Munich. Additions to the line-up of drive systems and the range of optional extras are set to further increase the appeal and diversity of the BMW product range from spring 2024. The BMW i5 Sedan and BMW iX2 fully electric models will each be available from March 2024 with an additional drive system variant. The drive system offerings for the BMW X2 and BMW XM have also been expanded. The innovative Highway Assistant will bring increased comfort levels over longer journeys to more of the brand’s model series. And additional exterior paint finishes will be offered for the BMW 5 Series Sedan, BMW X2 and BMW iX2. Customers will also be able to order the business sedan with new variants of the BMW Individual Merino leather trim.

Attractive new features will also be introduced in spring 2024 in the area of digital services. These include easier use of the voice assistant Siri (as part of the integration of the Apple iPhone into cars specified with BMW Operating System 9), and the optimised display of ratings for charging stations for fully electric and plug-in hybrid BMW models. The steady expansion of the range of functions for the My BMW App also continues.

BMW i5 xDrive40: third fully electric variant of the business sedan.

A third fully electric variant will be added to the new BMW 5 Series Sedan line-up in March 2024. The new BMW i5 xDrive40 Sedan (electric power consumption, combined: 20.0 – 17.2 kWh/100 km in the WLTP cycle) has two highly integrated electric drive units at the front and rear axle which together develop a system output of up to 290 kW/394 hp and peak torque of 590 Nm (435 lb-ft). Underpinned by the resultant electric all-wheel drive, the BMW i5 xDrive40 Sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds. Its top speed is limited to 215 km/h (134 mph).

The third fully electric model variant of the new business sedan stores its energy in a high-voltage battery positioned deep in the vehicle floor. The battery delivers 81.2 kWh of usable energy. The car’s Combined Charging Unit enables AC charging at a rate of 11 kW as standard and 22 kW as an option. And it also allows DC charging at fast-charging stations at up to 205 kW. This means the range of the BMW i5 xDrive40 Sedan can be increased by 156 kilometres (97 miles) in the space of ten minutes. The likewise standard Plug & Charge Multi Contract function enables automatic authentication of the car at public charging points. The range of the new BMW i5 xDrive40 Sedan as calculated in the WLTP cycle is 463 – 538 kilometres (288 – 334 miles).

Additional exterior paint finishes can be specified for all model variants of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan from March 2024. The spectrum of colours will now also include the BMW Individual Frozen Portimao Blue metallic and BMW Individual Malachite Green metallic variants. At the same time, the business sedan will also be offered with extremely exclusive BMW Individual special paint finishes. BMW Individual has come up with around 150 eye-catching shades (solid, metallic and matt) for this product area. All BMW Individual special paint finishes stand out with their impressive depth of colour and exceptional lustre. Customers can unlock an overview of the variants for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan using the BMW Individual Visualizer, which can be accessed via a link in the vehicle configurator.

Added to which, extra variants of the seat and interior surfaces for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan are also available. If the optional comfort seats have been specified, the BMW Individual Merino leather trim can also be specified in the bi-colour variants Dark Violet/Atlas Grey and Taupe Grey/Atlas Grey from March 2024.

New entry-level variant for the BMW iX2; launch of the BMW X2 xDrive20d.

BMW’s current model offensive in the area of electric mobility also brings additional variety to the premium compact segment. A new entry-level variant of the fully electric BMW iX2 will go on sale in March 2024. The new BMW iX2 eDrive20 (electric power consumption, combined: 16.9 – 15.3 kWh/100 km in the WLTP cycle) takes a particularly economical route to delivering locally emission-free driving pleasure in a compact Sports Activity Coupé (SAC). Powered by a 150 kW/204 hp electric motor at the front axle, it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.6 seconds and posts a range of 439 – 478 kilometres (273 – 297 miles) in the WLTP cycle. Its top speed is limited to 170 km/h (106 mph).

The high-voltage battery in the new BMW iX2 eDrive20 serves up 64.78 kWh of usable energy and can be charged from AC sources at 11 kW as standard and up to 22 kW as an option. DC charging is possible at up to 130 kW. Thanks to extremely efficient charging software and predictive heat management capability, brief stops are enough to significantly increase the battery charge. In ten minutes hooked up to a fast-charging station, the BMW iX2 eDrive20 can take on sufficient energy to boost its range by 120 kilometres (75 miles). The BMW iX2 eDrive20 is also equipped for using the Plug & Charge Multi Contract function as standard.

Lining up alongside the new entry-level variant of the BMW iX2 is the new BMW X2 xDrive20d (fuel consumption, combined: 5.2 – 4.8 litres/100 km [54.3 – 58.9 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 136 – 125 g/km in the WLTP cycle). The second diesel variant of the compact SAC is distinguished by even more rapid power delivery and even greater efficiency courtesy of 48V mild hybrid technology. Its 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine links up with an electric motor integrated into the seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch. The motor serves as a crankshaft-driven starter generator and can both ease the load on the diesel engine and act in unison with it. The drive system develops maximum output of 120 kW/163 hp (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 110 kW/150 hp and the electric motor with up to 14 kW/19 hp) and peak torque of 400 Nm / 295 lb-ft (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 360 Nm / 265 lb-ft and the electric motor with up to 55 Nm / 41 lb-ft), all of which is channelled to the road via the intelligent all-wheel-drive system BMW xDrive. This allows the BMW X2 xDrive20d to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.6 seconds. Top speed is 207 km/h (129 mph).

From March 2024, all model variants of the new BMW X2 and new BMW iX2 will also be available with an expanded range of exterior paint finishes. Frozen Black metallic is a new addition to the selection.

BMW XM 50e: high performance with maximum efficiency.

As the latest offshoot of the first ever electrified high-performance model from BMW M GmbH, the new BMW XM 50e (fuel consumption, combined: 1.7 – 1.3 litres/100 km [166.2 – 217.3 mpg imp]; electric power consumption, combined: 32.2 – 31.5 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 37 – 30 g/km in the WLTP cycle) blends signature M dynamism, extrovert design and progressive interior luxury with maximum efficiency. Its M HYBRID drive system is composed of a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine and an electric motor integrated, together with its power electronics, into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. This combination produces system output of 350 kW/476 hp (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 230 kW/313 hp and the electric motor with up to 145 kW/197 hp) and maximum system torque of 700 Nm / 516 lb-ft (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 450 Nm / 332 lb-ft and the electric motor with up to 280 Nm / 206 lb-ft).

The latest version of the 3.0-litre combustion engine fitted in the BMW XM 50e owes its enhanced performance characteristics among other things to the Miller combustion cycle, dual injection, an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head and VANOS variable camshaft timing, which now works electrically. The electric motor has a pre-gearing stage patented by BMW, which allows the effective torque at the transmission input for the motor to be increased to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft). The top speed of the high-performance model – which is also equipped with the all-wheel-drive system M xDrive – is an electronically limited 250 km/h (155 mph). Thanks to an electric range of 77 – 83 kilometres (48 – 52 miles) in the WLTP cycle, the BMW XM 50e can cover much of its everyday mileage – e.g. in urban centres – with zero local emissions. And it can also be driven on electric power alone beyond the city limits at speeds of up to 140 km/h (87 mph).

The most efficient version of the new M HYBRID system comes together with the extraordinary presence of the unmistakable high-performance model in the Sports Activity Vehicle segment. The model-specific design features of the new variant include the black accent band along the sides of the car, plus a surround for the BMW kidney grille and trim detailing for the rear diffuser (both in Pearl-effect Chrome), exhaust tailpipe trim in Black high-gloss and silver-coloured bordering for the model badge. Customers wishing to bring an extra personal touch to the interior of their new BMW XM 50e – which also offers a unique combination of modern sports car flair and extravagant luxury with its M-specific cockpit, M multifunction seats, sculptural headliner and M Lounge in the rear compartment – can specify features including exclusive Vintage leather for the upper section of the instrument panel and door trim panels.

Highway Assistant: innovative Level 2 functionality for more models.

Relaxed travel over long distances and an impressive experience of semi-automated driving are the specialities of the Highway Assistant, which made its debut in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and is now also available for other current BMW models.

As an additional function of the Steering and Lane Control Assistant included in the optional Driving Assistant Professional, the Highway Assistant takes over the vehicle’s speed control, distance control and steering on motorways with structurally separated carriageways when travelling at up to 135 km/h (84 mph). The driver can take their hands off the steering wheel and put them in a comfortable position, provided they continue to pay attention to what is happening on the road and are able to take over the steering again at any time. This Level 2 – as determined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) – semi-automated driving function will also be available for the BMW 7 Series luxury sedan, BMW iX, BMW XM, BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7 from spring 2024.

The Active Lane Change Assistant with eye confirmation included as part of the new Highway Assistant adds another layer to the semi-automated driving experience. As soon as the traffic situation permits, it is capable of performing the necessary steering movements for an overtaking manoeuvre, for example, and adjusting the vehicle’s speed as required. Plus, for the first time, the driver is able to initiate a lane change suggested by this system by simply looking in the exterior mirror to confirm it.

New digital services, My BMW App with additional functions.

Among the digital services available for the first time from spring 2024 is the extended smartphone integration for vehicles equipped with BMW Operating System 9. This enables the Siri voice assistant for the Apple iPhone to be activated directly by voice command and without needing to also press the push-to-talk button. Elsewhere, the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps now boasts improved display of information on charging stations. The available images and ratings are shown both in the list of search results and in the detailed display. The charging station ratings will now be shown clearly on a scale of zero to five stars. 

Added to which, in numerous European countries the BMW iDrive display and control/operation system in many current models also enables digital payment of parking fees and – in Germany – also fuel top-ups from inside the car. As with payment of parking fees, this uses the credit card information pre-stored in the vehicle apps.

As a universal digital interface for data exchange between the customer and their car, the My BMW App offers an ever-expanding number of functions. From spring 2024, Comfort Access with the BMW Digital Key Plus will be integrated into the My BMW App in vehicles equipped with BMW Operating System 8, 8.5 or 9. In addition, the map view for selecting navigation destinations imported into the vehicle has been newly designed. This also improves the search function and the visibility of the most relevant content. Map and routing functions will in future be proposed based on current vehicle or user contexts.

Finally, the new E-mobility Analysis function will also be added to the My Trips menu item in the My BMW App. Based on the customer’s driving behaviour, this function proposes the BMW model with all-electric drive system most suited to them. These recommendations are intended to help spark interest among users of combustion-engined vehicles in switching to an electric vehicle.

Munich. New model variants and innovations in the areas of electrification and digitalisation are set to further increase the appeal and diversity of the BMW product range from summer 2023. At the pinnacle of the model portfolio, the arrival of a third variant of the all-electric BMW i7 expands the brand’s offering in the luxury segment. At the same time, the Multi-Contract Plug & Charge and MAX RANGE functions will now be available for all BMW i7 and BMW iX model variants, making electric mobility even more convenient. And from August 2023, customers will have the choice of a second, extremely powerful six-cylinder in-line diesel engine for the new BMW X5 and BMW X6.

The highlight as far as digitalisation is concerned is the introduction of the upgraded BMW iDrive featuring QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 8.5 for a large number of current models. The capabilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will also be enhanced once again for these models in summer 2023. The new exterior colours and upholstery variants for several of the current models will offer additional scope for customisation. Meanwhile, the M Sport package Pro will be added to the choice of optional extras for the BMW X1 and BMW iX1.

BMW i7 eDrive50: an extra boost for electric mobility in the luxury segment.

It has taken just a few months for the all-electric BMW i7 to establish itself as the epitome of progressive drive technology in the luxury segment worldwide. From July 2023, the new BMW i7 eDrive50 (electric power consumption combined: 20.3 – 19.1 kWh/100 km in the WLTP cycle) will offer customers another way to enjoy supreme long-distance comfort combined with trailblazing innovations and emission-free driving pleasure. The third model variant in the BMW i7 line-up comes with the latest BMW eDrive technology in the form of a highly integrated electric drive unit delivering maximum output of 335 kW/455 hp and peak torque of 650 Nm (479 lb-ft).

This enables the new BMW i7 eDrive50 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 205 km/h (127 mph). Thanks to its highly efficient electric motor and the outstanding energy density of its high-voltage battery, the new BMW i7 eDrive50 achieves a WLTP-calculated range of 575 – 611 kilometres (357 – 380 miles).

Multi-Contract Plug & Charge and MAX RANGE: new functions for making electric mobility even more convenient.

To coincide with the ongoing expansion of the all-electric model line-up, new functions are being made available for all BMW i7 and BMW iX variants in summer 2023 that will make enjoying locally emission-free driving pleasure even easier and more convenient. The Multi-Contract Plug & Charge function will be added to the BMW Charging portfolio, enabling automatic vehicle authentication at public charging points. The exchange of data between vehicle and charging point does away with the need for a charging card or app. As the amount of electricity fed into the high-voltage battery is also billed automatically, Plug & Charge makes recharging even more straightforward than refuelling conventionally powered vehicles. The BMW Group is the first carmaker in the world to incorporate multi-contract functionality into this new feature. Customers are able to store their individual vehicle electricity contracts from multiple suppliers in digital form in their car, allowing them to use the charging points of these operators with the greatest of ease. The new Multi-Contract Plug & Charge function can be made available via Remote Software Upgrade for all BMW i7 models manufactured since July 2022 and all BMW iX models built since March 2023.

The MAX RANGE function for the electric drive system in the BMW i7 and BMW iX is also new and gives drivers greater flexibility when looking for a public charging station. It is operational in the My Mode Efficient and can be used to increase range by up to 25 per cent by both limiting drive power and top speed and scaling back comfort functions. The MAX RANGE function was mainly devised for situations where drivers are unable to recharge mid-journey as originally planned because, for example, the charging station they were heading for is out of service. Activating the MAX RANGE function extends the range by a comfortable margin for the journey to an alternative charging point for the high-voltage battery. This is achieved by, among other things, limiting the vehicle’s top speed to 90 km/h (56 mph) at the same time as disabling features such as the climate control, seat heating and steering wheel heating. The new MAX RANGE function can be made available via Remote Software Upgrade for all BMW i7 models manufactured since July 2022 and all BMW iX models built since March 2023.

The high-voltage battery in the BMW iX can now also be charged more efficiently thanks to the same upgraded charging software already used in the BMW i7. Here, careful control of the charging rate results in shorter charging times. The new charging software can also be imported into all BMW iX models manufactured since March 2023 via Remote Software Upgrade.

In addition to this, the various digital services offered for charging the high-voltage battery will be enhanced for all electrified BMW models in summer 2023. When searching for charging points in the navigation system, for instance, the entries for several stations within a single charging park will now be combined. In the future, the charging history will also show the total costs for a month and allow charging operations to be filtered by location.

The BMW Maps navigation system will also offer improved functions for calculating a charging-optimised route in the all-electric BMW i7, BMW iX, BMW i4 and BMW iX1 models. The driver’s preferred minimum charge level for when the vehicle reaches mid-journey stops and the final destination can now be adjusted in increments of five per cent and incorporated into the route planning. In the future, the system will also be able to give preference to charging stations operated by selected providers and exclude others from the route planning at the customer’s request. In addition, the user is given even more detailed information on their selected charging stations, including availability at that moment in time, the connector types supported and payment options, plus the presence of sanitary facilities, food outlets or playgrounds in their vicinity. The new charging-optimised route planning functions can also be retrofitted via Remote Software Upgrade.

Highly efficient and big on torque: the new six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with 48V mild hybrid technology for the BMW X5 and BMW X6.

A second six-cylinder in-line diesel engine will be added to the line-up of drive systems for the BMW X5 and BMW X6 in August 2023. The unit in the new BMW X5 xDrive40d (fuel consumption, combined: 8.4 – 7.3 litres/100 km [33.6 – 38.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 221 – 190 g/km in the WLTP cycle) and new BMW X6 xDrive40d (fuel consumption, combined: 8.2 – 7.3 litres/100 km [34.5 – 38.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 214 – 191 g/km in the WLTP cycle) is the most powerful diesel variant in the new modular generation of Efficient Dynamics engines.

New steel pistons enable a higher combustion pressure, and the effectiveness of the oil separation process has also been enhanced. The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology comprises a two-stage turbocharging system and a common-rail direct injection system with new solenoid valve injectors. These send the fuel into the combustion chambers with up to 12 injections per power stroke and maximum pressure of 2,500 bar. 48V mild hybrid technology in the form of a crankshaft-driven starter generator integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission gives the 3.0-litre engine even sharper power delivery and increases its efficiency.

The drive system generates maximum output of 259 kW/352 hp and peak torque of 720 Nm (531 lb-ft). The impressive pulling power of the new six-cylinder in-line diesel engine, the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and the intelligent all-wheel-drive system join forces to produce potent sprinting ability. The new BMW X5 xDrive40d and new BMW X6 xDrive40d both accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.5 seconds.

BMW iDrive with QuickSelect for further BMW models.

The upgraded BMW iDrive with QuickSelect is being rolled out with BMW Operating System 8.5 across additional models*. The latest generation of BMW iDrive brings a newly designed home screen and QuickSelect functionality to make selecting and operating numerous functions and digital services even more intuitive and comfortable. This also brings an improved menu structure that takes its cues from consumer electronics devices plus a range of new digital services and apps.

By showing the right information in the right place, the new BMW iDrive helps to deliver a focused, assured driving experience. BMW iDrive with QuickSelect also teams up with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, and so focuses squarely on operation using the touchscreen and natural language.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with additional skills.

In all BMW models that are equipped with BMW Operating System 8.5 or can be upgraded with the system*, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will gain additional skills from summer 2023. Depending on the vehicle specification and the driving situation, the digital companion will be able to suggest deactivating the speed limiting function, switching to Sport mode or activating the Assisted Driving Modes. Naturally formulated spoken instructions can also be used to adjust the seat position. In fully electric models with the relevant specification, the MAX RANGE function can be activated and the BMW IconicSounds Electric controlled with just a single spoken command.

Added to which, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will now be able to proactively explain previously unused functions to the driver, including storing favourite radio stations and using spoken commands to adjust the air conditioning or the brightness of the BMW Curved Display. The graphic depicting the digital companion during exchanges with the car’s occupants now gains ten additional transformation symbols.

M Sport package Pro now also available for the new BMW X1 and new BMW iX1.

From July 2023, the range of optional equipment available for the new BMW X1 and new BMW iX1 will now include a model-specific M Sport package Pro. This option will be offered as an extension of the M Sport package and helps to shine an even brighter spotlight on the dynamic character of the compact Sports Activity Vehicle.

This new option includes extended M High-gloss Shadowline trim, the M rear spoiler, the M Sport braking system with red or – if desired – dark blue callipers, plus M seat belts. Specifying the optional Adaptive LED Headlights also brings M lights Shadowline.

New for the BMW X1, BMW iX1 and BMW 2 Series Active Tourer: seat surfaces in Veganza perforated.

New upholstery variants available from July 2023 will underscore the premium character inside the new BMW X1, new BMW iX1 and new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. Seat surfaces in Veganza perforated trim can be ordered as an option for these models.

This vegan surface material with leather-like properties can be specified in Black, Mocha or Oyster. The M Alcantara/Veganza combination in Black with blue contrast stitching is also available for cars with the M Sport package.

New exterior colours for the BMW 3 Series Sedan, BMW 2 Series Coupé and BMW M2.

The introduction of new exterior colours for current BMW models gives customers additional scope for individualising the exterior of their car. The BMW Individual paint finishes Frozen Pure Grey metallic and Frozen Portimao Blue metallic will be available for the BMW 3 Series Sedan, BMW 2 Series Coupé and high-performance BMW M2 (fuel consumption, combined: 9.8 – 9.6 litres/100 km [28.8 – 29.4 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 222 – 218 g/km in the WLTP cycle) from July 2023.

Munich. For classic car fans in North America, the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance has long been the perfect season-opening event. And the 28th running of the spring get-together shone the spotlight on exquisite rarities from days gone by, as well new models from Bavaria. BMW and BMW M GmbH joined forces to present the new editions of their Sports Activity Vehicles and Sports Activity Coupés – produced at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. Introduced to the public for first time were the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6, plus the BMW X5 M Competition (fuel consumption, combined: 13.1 – 12.9 l/100 km [21.6 – 21.9 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 295 – 291 g/km in the WLTP cycle) and BMW X6 M Competition (fuel consumption, combined: 12.9 – 12.7 l/100 km [21.9 – 22.2 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 292 – 287 g/km in the WLTP cycle) high-performance models, with their extensively upgraded design and technology.

Precise design modifications, including new headlights and the latest version of the fully digital control/operation system BMW iDrive with BMW Curved Display, bring fresh cutting-edge appeal to the exterior and interior of the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. And taking driving pleasure to new heights are the new and more powerful drive system for the BMW X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid model (fuel consumption, combined: 1.1 – 0.8 l/100 km [256.8 – 353.1 mpg imp]; electric power consumption, combined: 27.0 – 22.9 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions: 26 – 18 g/km in the WLTP cycle) and the likewise new engines with 48V mild hybrid technology fitted in all other model variants. The new BMW X5 M Competition and new BMW X6 M Competition have a visibly honed exterior and, for the first time, a shared front-end design. The cabins of both vehicles feature state-of-the-art technology in the form of the BMW Curved Display including the BMW iDrive control/operation system with M-specific screen content. Their extensively modified V8 engines now also work with 48V technology and deliver their maximum output of 460 kW/625 hp with even greater urgency and in even more impressive style.

All four models handed their world premieres at Amelia Island also benefit from a significantly expanded portfolio of systems for automated driving and parking. For example, the cars can now be parked and complete manoeuvres carried out from outside the vehicle using an Apple iPhone.

BMW Group Classic glitters with racing legends and design icons.

Joining the fray alongside the sporty new arrivals from BMW and BMW M at Amelia Island was a true legend of motor sport – the BMW 3.0 CSL. BMW Group Classic brought the fabled racer to the show to mark a very special anniversary. Exactly 50 years ago, Toine Hezemans (NL) and Dieter Quester (AT) drove the 3.0 CSL to victory in the touring car (“Tourisme Spéciale”) class at the Le Mans 24 Hours race. The reliability of the 3.3-litre engine in the number 51 car played a key role here, as the pairing also finished 11th in the overall standings at the prestigious endurance classic.

At Amelia Island, the 3.0 CSL racing coupé took turns on display in the BMW Group Classic space with the series-produced version of the two-door car also known as the “Batmobile” (on account of its spectacular rear wing). This final development stage of the BMW 3.0 CSL with 3.2-litre engine producing 206 hp, of which only 167 examples were made, is also celebrating its 50th birthday this year. Adding the cherry to the cake of the BMW Group Classic line-up was the BMW 507. The roadster’s reputation as one of the most iconic BMW cars of all time endures to this day.

BMW Z3 and BMW Z4: hallmark BMW roadster feeling across four generations.

The run-up to the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance saw almost three decades of roadster history reunited. A road trip through Florida brought together a handful of BMW Z3 and BMW Z4 models from four generations. The line-up of cars selected for the tour from southern Florida to the venue for the classic car event in the north-east of the Sunshine State ranged from the BMW Z3 to the latest BMW Z4, which recently gained a fresh round of design and equipment updates.

The BMW Z3 was the first model built for the global market at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the US state of South Carolina. The roadster was unveiled in 1995 and made its first public appearance in the blockbuster James Bond movie GoldenEye. It remained on sale until 2002, when it was replaced by the first BMW Z4. With its eye-catching lines and cutting-edge equipment details, the Z4 put clear ground between itself and its predecessor. Seven years further on, the second-generation BMW Z4 provided a fresh interpretation of the roadster art – with its elegantly sweeping lines and, most notably, a retractable metal hardtop which could be lowered and raised again electrohydraulically at the touch of a button. The third generation of the Z4 has been putting smiles on the faces of open-top driving pleasure aficionados since 2018. Crisp proportions, a classical – and electrically powered – soft-top roof and a new level of dynamic talent set it apart from the crowd, as does the unique-in-its-segment straight-six engine of the range-topping model.

The update will provide the BMW X5 with everything it needs to maintain worldwide market leadership in its segment and enable the BMW X6 to secure its position as number one ahead of competitors from other premium German manufacturers. The two models will be built at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the USA, the competence centre for BMW X models, and their global launch gets underway in April 2023.

The new BMW X5: slim headlights, illuminated BMW kidney grille.

The inclusion of the xLine design elements as standard gives the BMW X5 significantly greater presence and visual robustness. Its front end is shaped by the fresh interpretation of the hallmark BMW headlights and kidney grille. The new headlight units now have a 35-millimetre slimmer outline. Their arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements point outwards and also serve as turn signal indicators. Matrix LED headlights with adaptive control and BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling high beam, plus M Shadowline lights, are included on the options list.

The BMW kidney Iconic Glow is now offered as an option for the six-cylinder variants of the new BMW X5, and its cascade lighting creates an extremely eye-catching and brand-typical look. The vertical air curtains and the lower air intake, complete with decorative trim detail in Pearl-effect Chrome and triangular apertures in its outer areas, also contribute to the cutting-edge aura.

The precisely updated design of the BMW X5 also spans newly designed air breathers in the front side panels and the standard inclusion of Exterior Line Satin Aluminium trim and roof rails in Satin Aluminium. The sculptural fibre-optic light guide elements for the rear lights and brake lights now have particularly striking contouring. The L shape familiar from other BMW models is reflected horizontally, creating a consistently illuminated X motif within the rear lights.

The new BMW X6: M Sport package now standard.

The new BMW X6 also has slim headlight units with arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements. As before, the BMW kidney Iconic Glow is offered as an option for the six-cylinder models. The dynamic character of the new BMW X6 is highlighted even more intently with the now standard M Sport package. Playing a key role here is the octagonal front-end signature below the BMW kidney grille, with its striking side apertures and generous use of black surfaces. In addition, the three-dimensional sculpting of the front apron underscores the car’s width and brawny stature.

M-specific side skirts and M High-gloss Shadowline trim are also part of the M Sport package. The rear apron of the SAC has an insert in Dark Shadow, while the new exhaust tailpipe trims are trapezoidal in shape.

Range-topping models with distinctive design features; M Sport package Pro makes its debut.

The M Sport package is available as an option for the new BMW X5 to convey the feeling of exclusive dynamism, as it does as standard in the design of the new BMW X6. These design features take on a model-specific form for the range-topping BMW X5 M60i xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 12.5 – 11.5 l/100 km [22.6 – 24.6 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions: 283 – 261 g/km in the WLTP cycle) and BMW X6 M60i xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 12.3 – 11.4 l/ 100 km [23.0 – 24.8 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions: 279 – 258 g/km in the WLTP cycle). They include double bars and an M logo for the BMW kidney grille, M exterior mirror caps in Black high-gloss, exhaust system tailpipe trim in the hallmark M quad-pipe style and a rear spoiler in Black high-gloss for the BMW X6 M60i xDrive.

All model variants are now available with the M Sport package Pro. The new M Marina Bay Blue metallic (BMW X5 M60i xDrive) and M Isle of Man Green metallic (BMW X6 M60i xDrive) body paint finishes are available exclusively for the range-topping models. New additions for all models are Blue Ridge Mountain metallic, Brooklyn Grey metallic, Skyscraper Grey metallic, Frozen Pure Grey metallic and around 40 BMW Individual special paint finishes.

Modern cockpit design with all-digital BMW Curved Display.

Digital technology is the guiding force behind the advances brought to the interior of the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. The integration of BMW Operating System 8 and the latest generation of the iDrive control/operation system also heralds the arrival of the BMW Curved Display in the Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupé. It is made up of a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches – both located behind a single glass surface. The touch control functionality of the control display has brought about a significant reduction in the number of buttons and switches in favour of digital control for numerous functions. The innovative cockpit and associated updates to the instrument panel bring a particularly progressive feel to the modern premium ambience.

Standard specification for both models now includes an instrument panel with surfacing in leather-like Sensafin and an elegantly curving trim element in fine wood. Another new feature is the ambient light bar with highly effective LED backlighting integrated below the trim element in the front passenger area. The relevant model lettering – “X5” or “X6” – is added to the light bar’s graphic; in the two flagship models it displays the M logo. The control panel on the centre console includes additional touch-sensitive surfaces and a newly designed gear selector lever.

Comfort seats for the driver and front passenger can be specified as an alternative to the standard sport seats with Sensafin surfaces. Also available as an option are BMW Individual Merino extended leather upholstery, BMW Individual full Merino leather upholstery, active seat ventilation and a massage function.

Among the other highlights of the options list are the new Comfort Package with panel heating and a “thermo” function for the cup holders, the Sky Lounge panoramic glass sunroof illuminated by LED units, glass applications for selected controls, the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System and the newly designed Travel & Comfort System.

New engines, new eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and systematic electrification.

The new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 can both be ordered with the choice of an eight-cylinder petrol engine, a six-cylinder in-line petrol and a six-cylinder in-line diesel engine – each from the latest generation of power units. All of the engines now link up with the likewise new eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, complete with gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. They send their power to the road – or indeed unpaved surfaces, as the need arises – via the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

All the drive units now feature 48V mild hybrid technology. This across-the-board application of electrification comes in the form of an electric motor integrated into the transmission. This motor generates an output boost of up to 9 kW/12 hp and 200 Nm (147 lb-ft) of torque, helping the combustion engine to deliver a smooth, dynamic drive along with high efficiency.

New plug-in hybrid BMW X5 xDrive50e offers more power, efficiency and electric range.

The drive system for the plug-in hybrid variant of the SAV has also been completely reworked, and the updated model carries the designation BMW X5 xDrive50e. A latest-generation six-cylinder in-line petrol engine and a similarly new electric motor team up to develop system output of 360 kW/489 hp (including temporary boost effect) – an increase of 70 kW/96 hp over the outgoing model – and combined torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft), which is a rise of 100 Nm (74 lb-ft). The petrol engine’s nominal output of 230 kW/313 hp represents an increase of 20 kW/27 hp on the unit it replaces. The compact electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission produces a nominal output of 145 kW/197 hp (+62 kW/84 hp). In addition, an innovative pre-gearing stage – used to increase the effective torque produced by the electric motor to a maximum 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) at the transmission input for the motor – helps to provide even sharper power delivery. The BMW X5 xDrive50e accelerates from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds.

The amount of usable energy that can be stored by the high-voltage battery integrated into the underbody area has been increased by almost 25 per cent over the preceding generation, to 25.7 kWh. A new Combined Charging Unit doubles the maximum AC charging rate to 7.4 kW. The electric range of the new BMW X5 xDrive50e is 94 – 110 kilometres (58 – 68 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

New V8 petrol engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology.

Credit for the elite sporting prowess of the two range-topping models goes to a new 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine, derived from the power units in high-performance models from BMW M GmbH. M TwinPower Turbo technology and a cross-bank exhaust manifold imbue the 390 kW/530 hp engine, which generates peak torque of 750 Nm (553 lb-ft), with impressively accomplished performance characteristics.

The latest version of the eight-cylinder engine powers both the new BMW X5 M60i xDrive and new BMW X6 M60i xDrive from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.3 seconds.

Innovations affecting the combustion process, gas exchange, valve control, injection and ignition system mark out the latest-generation
3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line petrol engine at work in the new BMW X5 xDrive40i (fuel consumption, combined: 9.9 – 8.5 l/100 km [28.5 – 33.2 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions: 224 – 193 g/km in the WLTP cycle) and new BMW X6 xDrive40i (fuel consumption, combined:
9.6 – 8.5 l/100 km [29.4 – 33.2 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions:
218 – 192 g/km in the WLTP cycle).

The new engine develops maximum output increased by 35 kW/47 hp over the outgoing models to 280 kW/381 hp, plus peak torque up by 70 Nm (52 lb-ft) to 520 Nm (383 lb-ft). This can be boosted to as much as 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) with the input of the mild hybrid system. The engine accelerates both the new BMW X5 xDrive40i and new BMW X6 xDrive40i from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds.

Six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with detail improvements.

The six-cylinder in-line diesel engine in the new BMW X5 xDrive30d (fuel consumption, combined: 8.2 – 7.1 l/100 km [34.5 – 39.8 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions: 215 – 186 g/km in the WLTP cycle) and new BMW X6 xDrive30d (fuel consumption, combined: 7.9 – 7.0 l/100 km [35.8 – 40.4 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions: 208 – 184 g/km in the WLTP cycle) also brings upgrades to numerous details. The 3.0-litre unit now has steel pistons instead of aluminium items, an optimised oil separation process and a new common-rail direct injection system with solenoid valve injectors.

The new diesel engine joins forces with the mild hybrid system to produce maximum output of 219 kW/298 hp and peak torque of 670 Nm (494 lb-ft). This enables both the new BMW X5 xDrive30d and new BMW X6 xDrive30d to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.1 seconds.

Sophisticated chassis technology underpins sporting ability and long-distance comfort.

Fitting adaptive suspension as standard, modifying the anti-roll bars in response to changes in weight distribution and strengthening them accordingly gives the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 their signature blend of sporting versatility and excellent long-distance comfort. Adaptive M suspension, which comes as standard on both the range-topping models as well as the other variants of the new BMW X6, provides a particularly firm connection to the body. Adaptive two-axle air suspension and the xOffroad package are offered as options. The range-topping models are equipped as standard with Integral Active Steering. This is available as an option for all other models or as part of the adaptive M suspension Professional, which also includes an M Sport differential and an active roll stabilisation system.

The integrated braking system is another element of the advanced chassis technology at work here. And standard specification also includes 19-inch light-alloy wheels for the new BMW X5, 20-inch items for the new BMW X6 and 21-inch wheels for the range-topping variant of each model. Light-alloy wheels up to 22 inches in size can be specified as an option.

Additional systems for automated driving and parking.

Comfort and safety in the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 can be taken to another new level with a significantly expanded selection of automated driving and parking systems. Updates include enhanced capabilities for the standard front-collision warning system, which can now also reduce the risk of a collision with cyclists, pedestrians or oncoming traffic when turning off a road. Among the options now available are automatic Speed Limit Assist, exit warning, Active Navigation, route speed control, traffic light recognition (depending on the market), Emergency Stop Assistant, Lane Change Assistant and Merging Assistant.

As well as the Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing Assistant, the standard Parking Assistant now also comprises the drive-off monitoring and Trailer Assistant functions. And the new, optional Parking Assistant Professional enables automated parking into and out of spaces and complete manoeuvres over a distance of up to 200 metres to be controlled from outside the car using the My BMW App on an Apple iPhone.

Latest-generation BMW iDrive, new digital services.

The latest-generation BMW iDrive tech based on BMW Operating System 8 brings both the BMW Curved Display and an array of new digital services to the BMW X5 and BMW X6. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus also includes the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps. And the optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional also treats customers to the BMW head-up display and Augmented View function. When the car is stationary, the driver and front passenger can also stream content from YouTube and access the Bundesliga in-car app (for content from Germany’s top football league) on the control display.

The optional BMW Digital Key Plus enables customers to lock and unlock their new BMW X5 or BMW X6 via security-enhanced ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology with compatible smartphones running the iOS or Android operating system. Optimised smartphone integration, the personalised BMW ID and a Personal eSIM designed to work with new 5G mobile technology are also on hand. The digital services from BMW Charging for the BMW X5 xDrive50e have now been integrated into the My BMW App.

Munich. As spearheads of the BMW X model range, the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7 impress with a high level of comfort and luxury, supreme performance and pronounced dynamic handling capabilities. The two Sports Activity Vehicles (SAV) and the Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) combine these attributes with an equally dynamic, elegant and unmistakably distinctive design. New highlights are the BMW X5 and BMW X6 Black Vermilion editions featuring exclusive equipment details. The BMW X7 edition in Frozen Black metallic combines impressive options into an exclusive package.

In 2020 alone and with almost 250,000 units sold worldwide, the SAV/SAC trio from Spartanburg, USA, contributed decisively towards the success of the BMW brand. Around every eighth newly delivered BMW model was a BMW X5, X6 or X7.

All three edition models go on sale with all engines available for each of their original models. They can be ordered with immediate effect, with the market launch beginning in August 2021. Prices in Germany start at 93,200 Euros for the BMW X5 Black Vermilion, 100,700 Euros for the BMW X6 Black Vermilion and 108,700 Euros for the BMW X7 in Frozen Black metallic (each including 19% sales tax).

Particularly striking: BMW X5 and X6 Black Vermilion edition.
The central focus of the Black Vermilion edition is the interplay between the colours black and red. For example, the BMW double kidney grille with model-specific red bars creates an effective contrast to the BMW Individual special paint finish Frozen Black metallic. On the BMW X6 Black Vermilion this visual highlight is expressed in a particularly impressive way in combination with its kidney grille Iconic Glow. The M headlights Shadow Line with BMW laser light, including accented lighting with blue X signature, complete the distinctive look of the front end. Moreover, on the exterior, the M Sport Package emphasises the dynamic character of the BMW X5 and X6 Black Vermilion editions. It comprises, among other things, specific front and rear aprons as well as the M high-gloss Shadow Line with extended options. Behind the Orbit Grey matt, 22-inch, double-spoke 742 M light alloy wheels with mixed tyres designed exclusively for these edition models, red high-gloss M Sport brake callipers stand out as a striking visual highlight.

In the interior of the BMW X5 and BMW X6 Black Vermilion editions the M Alcantara Anthracite roof liner provides for an exceptionally sophisticated ambience. A finely crafted Edition logo on the cupholder cover in BMW Individual black piano finish emphasises the limited model’s exclusiveness. The glass application Crafted Clarity on the iDrive Controller, the automatic gear selector and Start/Stop button, as well as the BMW Individual precious wood interior trim Fineline Black with aluminium inlays provide additional sophisticated accents. Driver and front seat passenger travel in comfort seats offering a multitude of adjustment options. The BMW Individual full leather trim Merino Black is additionally enhanced by edition-specific red contrast stitching for both the driver’s seat and front passenger seat. Inside the BMW X5 Black Vermilion, the red accents are also to be found on the rear seats. Likewise, the edging on both the front and rear floor mats is finished in red. Sun-protective glass with more deeply tinted rear windows beyond the B-pillar enhances passenger privacy whilst blending in harmoniously with the sporty and dynamic exterior design.

BMW X7 edition in Frozen Black metallic – individual and expressive.
Like the Black Vermilion editions, the new BMW X7 edition also has the BMW Individual special paint finish Frozen Black metallic, dispensing, however, with details in contrasting colour. The BMW M Sport brake callipers of the edition-specific, 22-inch BMW Individual Y-spoke 758 I alloy wheels in Orbit Grey matt are finished in high gloss black. Combined with the M Sport Package and the M High Gloss Shadow Line with extended options, it is this colour restraint in particular that make the 5.15-metre long and over 2-metre wide seven-seater look even more impressive. The interior of the BMW X7 edition in Frozen Black metallic provides for an elegantly discreet atmosphere thanks to the M Alcantara Anthracite roof liner, the glass application Crafted Clarity and sun-protection glass.

Munich. The market launch of the BMW M5 CS is the absolute highlight among the innovations that will enrich the BMW model range in spring 2021. The first special model based on the BMW M5 Competition takes on the top position in the BMW M GmbH range in terms of engine power, performance and exclusivity, underlining the brand's close ties with racing. Model diversity in the premium segment of the compact and mid-size class will be expanded from March 2021 with additional drive variants for the BMW 4 Series Coupé and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé. What is more, attractive additions to the standard or optionally available equipment in numerous BMW model series enhance driving pleasure, comfort, individuality and safety.

A feature previously only available for high-performance BMW M GmbH automobiles will also be featured on the most powerful variants of the BMW 3 Series Sedan and BMW 4 Series Coupé from March 2021. For the first time, an M carbon fibre roof will be offered for the top models of both model series. Exclusive lightweight components also optimise the driving experience in the BMW M8. Newly developed M Carbon bucket seats will be available as an optional extra for the three high-performance models in the luxury segment from March 2021. The luxury sedans of the BMW 7 Series will be equipped with Integral Active Steering as standard. In addition, a nanoparticle filter will now be a new component of the standard or optional 4-zone automatic air conditioning in the BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series as well as in the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7 models. BMW Individual Shadow Line lights complement the equipment range for the BMW X5 and BMW X6. The BMW News app will be added to the range of digital services for selected BMW models from April 2021.

High-performance sedan with exclusive racing characteristics: The BMW M5 CS.
Following the BMW M3 CS, the BMW M4 CS and the BMW M2 CS, a special model of the BMW M5 will be launched for the first time in March 2021. The most powerful and exclusive version of the high-performance sedan bears the name BMW M5 CS (combined fuel consumption: 11.3 - 10.9 l/100 km (WLTP), 11.3 - 11. 1 l/100 km (NEDC); combined CO2 emissions: 257 - 248 g/km (WLTP), 258 - 253 g/km (NEDC).

The special model is powered by the most powerful engine ever to be used in a BMW M GmbH production vehicle. The V8 engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology generates a maximum output of 467 kW/635 hp and is thus 7 kW/10 hp more powerful than the drive unit in the BMW M5 Competition. Weighing in with 70 kilograms less weight, the BMW M5 CS completes the sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h in 3.0 seconds, beating the BMW M5 Competition by 0.3 seconds.

The racetrack potential of the BMW M5 CS also goes hand in hand with unrestricted suitability for everyday use. In addition to design elements for the exterior in Gold Bronze, standard equipment also features M Carbon seats for the driver and front passenger. In the rear of the BMW M5 CS, two passengers can be seated on individual seats and enjoy the outstanding driving experience.

New in the BMW 4 Series: Inline 6-cylinder diesel engines and exclusive optional extras.
The sporty character of the new BMW 4 Series Coupé will be underlined by an additional BMW M automobile and a further model variant with a particularly powerful engine from March 2021. In both cases, an inline 6-cylinder diesel engine and intelligent all-wheel drive provide efficient driving pleasure. The new BMW M440d xDrive Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 6.3 – 5.7 l/100 km (WLTP), 5.7 - 5.3 l/100 km (NEDC); combined CO2 emissions: 164 - 150 g/km (WLTP), 149 - 140 g/km (NEDC), with its 250 kW/340 hp drive featuring BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology is also combined with an 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, an M sports package and an M sports differential. Thanks to the outstanding performance of the 3.0-litre engine and its maximum torque of 700 Nm, the new BMW M440d xDrive Coupé accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds.

With a maximum output of 210 kW/286 hp generated from a 3.0 litres of capacity and a maximum torque of 650 Nm, the powerplant of the new BMW 430d xDrive Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 5.9 – 5.2 l/100 km (WLTP), 5.1 - 4.8 l/100 km (NEDC); combined CO2 emissions: 155 - 137 g/km (WLTP), 134 - 126 g/km (NEDC) also enables dynamic acceleration manoeuvres. It takes just 5.1 seconds to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h.

In both inline 6-cylinder diesel models, mild hybrid technology with a 48-volt starter generator provides a further increase in dynamics and efficiency. The system enables particularly intensive energy recovery in braking and thrust phases. The energy is stored in a 48-volt battery and used both for the onboard network and to generate additional drive power. The dynamic power delivery when starting off and accelerating is enhanced by the additional power of 8 kW/11 hp spontaneously provided by the 48-volt starter generator. In other load ranges the electric drive can relieve the combustion engine and thus increase its efficiency.

For both the new BMW 4 Series Coupé and the new BMW 4 Series Convertible, the BMW Individual Brilliant White metallic, BMW Individual Frozen Portimao Blue metallic and BMW Individual Frozen Deep Grey metallic exterior paint finishes will also be available from March 2021. The extended BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery or the BMW Individual Merino full leather upholstery will be available in six or four colour variants respectively to ensure exclusive flair in the interior.

Dynamic charisma increased, centre of gravity lowered: M Carbon roof in the BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series.
The new BMW M440d xDrive Coupé, just like the BMW M440i xDrive Coupé and the two corresponding top models of the BMW 3 Series Sedan, will add further touches of sporty flair by means of an exclusive lightweight construction feature. The M Carbon roof, available for these four models from March 2021, emphasises dynamic charisma and at the same time lowers the vehicle's centre of gravity further to make it even more agile.

In future, the new interior trims will be available in the M Carbon Fibre version to match. They will also be available for the BMW M440i xDrive Convertible and for all other model variants of the new BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series, in each case in conjunction with the M Sport Model equipment.

Additional all-wheel drive model variant for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé.
The added traction, driving stability and sportiness associated with intelligent all-wheel drive can be experienced in a further model variant of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé from March 2021. The new BMW 220i xDrive Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 7.3 - 6.5 l/100 km (WLTP), 6.4 - 6.1 l/100 km (NEDC); combined CO2 emissions: 165 - 149 g/km (WLTP, 147 - 139 g/km (NEDC), generates 131 kW/178 hp from a 4-cylinder petrol engine, the power being distributed between the front and rear wheels as required. The 7-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch is in charge of power transmission. With this drive technology, the new BMW 220i xDrive Gran Coupé accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds.

The range of optional extras for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé will be supplemented by additional light-alloy wheels in spring 2021. 18-inch M light-alloy wheels in Y-spoke design and bicolour finish are new to the range.

BMW 7 Series now features Integral Active Steering as standard.
The superior ride comfort, cornering dynamics and agility of the BMW 7 Series luxury sedans will be enhanced from March 2021 with the help of Integral Active Steering as standard. This system optimises both agility and superior handling at higher speeds as well as comfort when manoeuvring through precisely controlled steering of the rear wheels. The latest version of the Integral Active Steering system triggers counter-steering of the rear wheels even at a particularly low speed of less than 3 km/h. This further enhances the manoeuvrability of the luxury sedans when parking and backing out, as well as when passing slowly through narrow spaces.

Nanoparticle filter as a new component of the 4-zone automatic air conditioning.
In many current BMW models, a nanoparticle filter will be part of the range of functions of the 4-zone automatic air conditioning. The system, which is unique in the competitive environment, is able to remove tiny impurities from the air flowing into the interior. The 4-zone automatic air conditioning with nanoparticle filter is part of the standard equipment in the BMW X7 and is offered as an option for the BMW 7 Series luxury sedans, the BMW 8 Series luxury sports cars and the BMW X5 and BMW X6 models.

BMW Individual Shadow Line lights for the BMW X5 and BMW X6.
The range of optional equipment for the BMW X5 and BMW X6 models is supplemented by the BMW Individual Shadow Line lights. They are available in conjunction with the optional BMW laser light and feature black inlays on the upper edge of the headlights ensuring a particularly expressive front view.

Pure race-track feeling: M Carbon bucket seats in the BMW M8.
A particularly attractive addition to the range of optional extras for the BMW M8 models allows customers to experience the fascinating performance characteristics of the high-performance sports cars even more intensively. M Carbon bucket seats will be available for the BMW M8 Competition Coupé, the BMW M8 Competition Convertible and the BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupé from March 2021. With their novel, structure-based design, visible carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) surfaces, integrated headrests, openings in the backrests and side sections as well as guides for multi-point seat belts, they combine racing functionality with long-distance comfort and luxurious quality of workmanship.

The M Carbon bucket seats for the driver and front passenger are electrically adjustable for height, tilt and forward/back positioning. In addition, the inclination and width of their backrests can be adjusted at the touch of a button. They feature leather and alcantara seat surfaces and are also heated. Illuminated "M8" lettering on the headrests and a memory function on the driver's side are also part of the equipment package of the M Carbon bucket seats. Their lightweight construction concept leads to a significant weight reduction compared to the standard M sports seats.

Exclusive special equipment for other BMW M automobiles.
The range of optional extras available for numerous other BMW M automobiles will also be expanded in spring 2021. For the BMW M3 Sedan and the BMW M4 Coupé, the new Skyscraper Grey metallic exterior paint finish and the extended BMW Merino leather upholstery are available in a choice of five additional colour variants.

The BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition models can also be equipped with BMW Individual Shadow Line lights in conjunction with the optional BMW laser light from April 2021. In addition, the optional 4-zone automatic air conditioning will also include a nanoparticle filter in the BMW M8 models.

New addition to the range of digital services: BMW News app.
The BMW Operating System 7, which is available in conjunction with BMW Live Cockpit, BMW Live Cockpit Plus or BMW Live Cockpit Professional in numerous current BMW models, enables the use of a growing number of digital services. The latest innovations in this area include the BMW News app, which will be available from April 2021 as part of BMW Connected and provides the driver with selected audio content. This is precisely tailored to the wishes and needs of the driver. Based on the driver’s individual interests, current online news is selected from publisher offerings and broadcast in the form of naturally spoken language via the vehicle's audio system.

Munich. Increased efficiency through consistent electrification, optimised emissions and innovations in the areas of driver assistance and digital services are the focus of the model revision measures for numerous BMW model series that will take effect in autumn 2020. From November 2020, all models of the premium brand will meet the requirements of the currently strictest exhaust emission standard Euro 6d. In the BMW 5 Series, the range of plug-in hybrid models has been extended by three new variants. New inline 6-cylinder diesel engines and 48-volt mild hybrid technology lower fuel consumption and emissions of selected models in the BMW 3 Series and BMW 8 Series. In addition, further engines will supplement the drive portfolio of the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé.

Active speed control with Stop&Go provides an added comfort and safety thanks to the new additional feature of traffic light recognition, which will be part of the Driving Assistant Professional option in numerous current models from November 2020.

The latest digital services for models equipped with BMW Operating System 7 increase driving pleasure even further. BMW News provides the driver with personalised audio news. New options when creating the driver profile make it easier to personalise the vehicle. The range of functions of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will also be expanded further. New body finishes and optional extras will be available for numerous models from November 2020.

Efficiency becomes more diverse: World premiere for five plug-in hybrid models in the BMW 5 Series.

The range of BMW models with electrified drive systems will also be consistently expanded in autumn 2020. The expanded range of the following electrified models is especially attractive: BMW 545e xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 2.3 – 2.2 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.3 – 15.8 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 53 – 49 g/km; electric range: 47 – 57 km), BMW 530e Touring (combined fuel consumption: 2.0 – 1.8 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.1 – 15.4 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 46 – 42 g/km; electric range: 52 – 57 km (WLTP)) and BMW 530e xDrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 2.4 – 2.2 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.7 – 16.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 54 – 50 g/km; electric range: 48 – 53 km (WLTP)). The BMW 5 Series model range now already includes five plug-in hybrid variants. In the upper mid-size class, BMW offers the largest selection of models with electrified drive.

In the new BMW 545e xDrive Sedan, an inline 6-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission deliver impressive driving dynamics in a particularly efficient manner. The power of the two drive units adds up to a maximum system output of 290 kW/394 hp and is distributed between the front and rear wheels as required by the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive. The brand’s hallmark combination of energy efficiency and sportiness also characterises the new Touring models, whose plug-in hybrid system consists of a 4-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive system also integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission. Together they generate a system output of up to 215 kW/292 hp in the XtraBoost mode when load requirements are particularly high.

Increased dynamic performance and reduced fuel consumption: New inline 6-cylinder diesel engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology in the BMW 3 Series and BMW 8 Series.

With the introduction of 48-volt mild hybrid technology in additional models, BMW continues to consistently reduce fuel consumption and emissions in its current vehicle fleet. This is linked to the introduction of a new generation of inline 6-cylinder diesel engines. As of autumn 2020, four mid-size models of the BMW 3 Series and three luxury sports cars of the BMW 8 Series will offer noticeably more dynamic performance and increased efficiency.

This twofold and BMW typical progress is achieved through further advanced BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and additionally with the aid of a particularly powerful starter generator and an additional battery. The dynamic power delivery when starting off and accelerating is enhanced by the additional power of 8 kW/11 hp spontaneously provided by the 48-volt starter generator. In other load ranges the electric drive can relieve the combustion engine and thus increase its efficiency. The power required for this is generated by intensive recuperation in braking and thrust phases and stored in a 48-volt battery, which also supplies the vehicle’s electrical system.

The 48-volt mild hybrid technology will be used in four further BMW 3 Series models from November 2020. In the new BMW 330d Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 4.7 – 4.4 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 125 – 116 g/km*) and the new BMW 330d Xdrive Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 5.0 – 4.7 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 132 – 123 g/km*) and the new BMW 330d Touring (combined fuel consumption: 4.8 – 4.5 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 128 – 119 g/km*) and the new BMW 330d Xdrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 5.2 – 4.8 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 136 – 127 g/km), it supports the new inline 6-cylinder diesel engine, which already provides additional driving pleasure with its maximum output increased by 15 kW/21 hp to 210 kW/286 hp. Thanks to a two-stage turbocharging system and an advanced common rail injection system whose piezo injectors now inject the fuel with up to ten injections per working cycle and a maximum pressure of 2 700 bar into the combustion chambers, engine response and efficiency of the 3.0 litre engine are optimised. The new diesel engine generates its maximum torque, which has been increased by 30 to 650 Nm, between 1 500 and 2 500 rpm. The increased power of the combustion engine and the additional electrical power noticeably improve the car’s sprint capacity. For example, the new BMW 330d Sedan improves its acceleration from zero to 100 km/h by 0.2 seconds to now 5.3 seconds.

In the BMW 8 Series, 48-volt mild hybrid technology is combined with an equally new and even more powerful 3.0-litre diesel engine. The BMW 840d xDrive Coupé models (fuel consumption combined: 5.8 – 5.6 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 154 - 146 g/km), BMW 840d xDrive Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 6.0 – 5.7 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 159 – 151 g/km) and BMW 840d xDrive Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 5.9 – 5.6 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 155 - 148 g/km) will be powered by a 250 kW/340 hp inline 6-cylinder engine in the future. The 15 kW/20 hp increase in top-level output also results from further advanced BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. It now includes a multi-stage turbocharger with variable turbine geometry for the high-pressure and low-pressure stages. The maximum torque of 700 Nm is generated alreadybetween 1 750 and 2 250 rpm. In the luxury sports car model range, the new drive technology enables the BMW 840d xDrive Coupé, for example, to improve its acceleration figure from a standing start to 100 km/h by 0.1 seconds to 4.8 seconds. The optimised performance characteristics of the diesel engine are accompanied by precisely adapted fine tuning of the chassis and its control systems.

The new diesel engines for the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 8 Series also represent the latest state of the art with regard to emissions. They feature exhaust gas treatment technology, whose engine-proximate components consist of a diesel oxidation catalytic converter and an SCR coating on the diesel particulate filter. In order to optimally reduce nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions, a second metering unit is additionally integrated at the outlet of the engine-proximate SCR system.

BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé: Additional engines and new optional extras.

New engines will be available from November 2020 for the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé. The new BMW 116i (combined fuel consumption: 5.8 – 5.4 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 133 – 124 g/km) is powered by a 3-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 80 kW/109 hp and a maximum torque of 190 Nm. It is equipped as standard with a manual 6-speed transmission and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 10.6 seconds. A 7-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch is optionally available. In addition, the model range will be expanded to include the new BMW 120i (fuel consumption combined: 5.8 – 5.5 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 134 – 126 g/km). Its 4-cylinder petrol engine generates a maximum output of 131 kW/178 hp and a maximum torque of 280 Nm and is combined as standard with a 7-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch. The new BMW 120i accelerates from a standing start to 100 km/h in 7.0 seconds.

Outstanding economy is the hallmark of the new entry-level diesel engine for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé. The 3-cylinder diesel engine of the new BMW 216d Gran Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 4.1 – 3.8 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 108 – 99 g/km) provides a maximum output of 85 kW/116 hp and a maximum torque of 270 Nm. It transmits its power to a 7-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch as standard and enables acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds.

The range of optional equipment for the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé is supplemented by the BMW Individual Shadow Line lights. With the black inserts at the upper edge of the headlamps they make the front view even more powerfully expressive.

Active speed control with Stop&Go: new with traffic light recognition: Increased comfort and optimised safety in urban traffic.

The comfort and safety gains that can be achieved by combined speed and distance control can be experienced from autumn 2020 in numerous current BMW models, including when driving in urban traffic. In combination with the optional Driving Assistant Professional and the optional BMW Head-Up Display, the BMW 3 Series, BMW 4 Series and BMW 5 Series Series, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo, the BMW 7 Series and 8 Series as well as the BMW iX3, BMW X5, BMW X6, BMW X7, BMW M3, BMW M4, BMW M5, BMW M8, BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M in Germany the function of active speed control with Stop&Go now also a traffic light recognition available. In addition to vehicles and traffic signs in front, the signals of light signals registered by the front camera are also taken into account.

In the case of simple traffic light systems, these are automatically transferred to the speed and distance control. If the traffic light shows a red light, the system delays the vehicle to a standstill, a green light signal leads to the continuation of the journey. In a more complex intersection situation, the driver is offered the traffic lights for manual transfer in the instrument combination.

The driver can now confirm the light signal shown and thus continue to use the automatic speed and distance control or take control of the speed himself. The start-up reminder provides additional comfort in city traffic. During a stop at simple traffic lights, the current traffic light phase is displayed in the instrument combo, and at the beginning of the green phase, the driver also receives a signal to restart.

The function of traffic light recognition can also be retrofitted into the vehicle via remote software upgrade. With the exception of the BMW 8 Series models, this option is available for vehicles of all mentioned series, which were produced from July 2020 and are equipped with the Driving Assistant Professional and Head Up Display. Vehicles of the BMW X5, BMW X6, BMW X7 series include this option from August 2020 production.

New digital services for more driving pleasure: BMW News, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with new functions, personal profile picture and simple log-in.

The latest generation of the display and control system makes it possible to use new digital services in numerous current BMW models. The BMW Operating System 7, which is available in conjunction with BMW Live Cockpit, BMW Live Cockpit Plus or BMW Live Cockpit Professional, allows the driver to customise what is displayed to a very high degree. From November 2020, audio content will also be tailored to the driver’s wishes and needs with BMW News. Based on the driver’s individual interests, current online news is selected from publisher offerings and broadcast in the form of naturally spoken language via the vehicle's audio system.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is one of the particularly innovative services that features in current models with BMW Operating System 7. The digital companion, which enables intuitive operation of numerous vehicle functions via voice control (“Hey, BMW”), is constantly gaining new capabilities. From autumn 2020, the operating modes MAX eDrive and AUTO eDrive or ELECTRIC and HYBRID can also be activated in the appropriately equipped plug-in hybrid models by means of a naturally spoken instruction. In addition, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will be able to play back the drive sounds of other BMW models via the audio system when asked a corresponding question such as ("What does a BMW M3 sound like?") in cars delivered to the German market.

Optimised options for creating a driver profile allow further customisation opportunities. From November 2020, the driver can no longer only login by entering the BMW ID manually, but also via the My BMW App as well, making the process very convenient. A QR code generated for this purpose can be displayed on the Control Display, which can be scanned using a smartphone. The personal driver profile data can then be transferred to the vehicle. Also new: The driver can add a photo of his choice to his individual profile.

BMW X1 and BMW X2: New headlamp variants and BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line with extended features.

Adaptive LED headlights will be available for the compact BMW X2 Sports Activity Coupé from November 2020. They optimise visibility when driving at night, among other things by means of a high beam matrix function. This feature is able to increase the range of vision while at the same time avoiding any dazzle effect on other road users. To achieve this, the high beam is divided into several LED segments that can be activated and deactivated independently of each other to adapt how the road is illuminated to the respective traffic situation.

In addition, the striking BMW Individual Shadow Line lights are available as a new option for the BMW X2 and the BMW X1. The sporty appearance of the BMW X2 can be further enhanced by the BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line with extended features. In addition to the high-gloss black side window surrounds, this option includes a black frame for the BMW kidney grille and tailpipe trims in chrome black.

New paint finishes allow for expressive individualisation.

New additions to the range of paint finishes for numerous models will be introduced in autumn 2020 allowing for even greater levels of individualisation. The new San Remo Green metallic paint finish will also be available for the new BMW 4 Series Coupé in future. For the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7, the colours Dravit Grey metallic and Sparkling Brown metallic have been added to the range. In addition, the BMW Individual special paintwork finishes Grigio Telesto metallic, Urban Green metallic, Frozen Black metallic, Petrol Mica metallic, Ruby Red metallic, Avus Blue metallic and British Racing Green metallic are also available for the large BMW X models. 

For the BMW i3 (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) and BMW i3s (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 14.6 – 14.0 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) new paint finishes will also be available from November 2020. The purely electrically driven models will be available with paint finishes in Cashmere Silver with accents in BMW i Blue and Galvanic Gold with accents in Frozen Grey metallic and Fluid Black with accents in Frozen Grey metallic.

With the introduction of 48-volt mild hybrid technology in additional model series from summer 2020, BMW continues to consistently reduce fuel consumption and emissions in its current vehicle fleet. From July and August 2020, both efficiency and dynamic performance will be optimised in 51 models with the use of a particularly powerful starter generator and an additional battery. This also applies to the new in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines in the BMW 7 Series and in the BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7. Two additional engine variants are available for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé from July 2020 onwards. In numerous plug-in hybrid models, the new BMW eDrive Zone function will ensure an automatic switch to purely electric operating mode when entering inner city areas such as low emission zones.

The extension of the range of standard and optional equipment features in the areas of driver assistance systems, operation and networking contributes to an increase in driving pleasure. A new display and control system will be part of the standard trim in the new BMW 3 Series from July 2020. Among other things, BMW Operating System 7 enables use of the optional BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Furthermore, in the BMW 3 Series and other model series the range of functions of the optional Driving Assistant Professional is supplemented by Active Navigation Guidance and the Emergency Lane Assistant. With the optional smartphone integration, numerous current BMW models will enable use of Android Auto in addition to Apple CarPlay as of summer 2020.

Increased dynamic performance and reduced fuel consumption: 48-volt mild hybrid technology now in 51 BMW models.
From summer 2020 onwards, mild hybrid technology will be used in numerous additional BMW models to provide support and relief for the combustion engine. It consists of a 48-volt starter generator that enables particularly intensive braking energy recuperation along with an additional battery to store the electricity that is generated in this way. The 48-volt battery not only supplies the electrically operated vehicle functions, it also makes its energy available to generate additional drive power. For this purpose the current flows back to the starter generator, which now takes on the role of an electric drive. This reduces the load on the combustion engine, allowing it to run as often as possible in an efficiency-optimised load range. What is more, the generator creates an electric boost during acceleration. This instantly available additional output of 8 kW/11 hp supports dynamic power delivery during start and acceleration.

The 48-volt mild hybrid technology was first introduced in selected model variants of the BMW 5 Series in autumn 2019. This was followed by the BMW 3 Series models and several BMW X models. From July and August 2020, it will be available as standard in 37 further model variants of the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series and BMW 7 Series as well as the BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7. All in all it will ensure efficiency and dynamic performance in 51 current BMW models.

More power, less emissions: the new in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines with optimised BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology.
A new generation of in-line 6-cylinder engines will make its debut in numerous BMW model series in summer 2020. These highly efficient aluminium power units, each with a capacity of 3.0 litres, combine their extensively further developed BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology with the new 48-volt mild hybrid system, thereby achieving particularly significant progress within the context of BMW EfficientDynamics. In addition to optimised turbocharging systems, the latest version of common rail direct injection with piezo injectors ensures that both performance and efficiency are significantly increased in the new diesel engines. The injectors now transport fuel to the combustion chambers in up to ten injections per cycle and at a maximum pressure of 2,700 bar.

With maximum output increased by 15 kW/21 hp to 210 kW/286 hp, the new diesel engine for the models BMW 730d (combined fuel consumption: 4.9 – 4.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 128 – 123 g/km) and BMW 730d xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.2 – 5.0 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 138 – 133 g/km), BMW 730Ld (combined fuel consumption: 5.0 – 4.8 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 130 – 126 g/km), BMW 730Ld xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.3 – 5.1 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 139 – 133 g/km), BMW X3 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 5.6 – 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 147 – 137 g/km), BMW X4 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 5.6 – 5.1 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 146 – 136 g/km), BMW X5 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 – 5.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 164 – 150 g/km) und BMW X6 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 – 5.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 162 – 149 g/km) demonstrates a perceptibly enhanced temperament. Its particularly spontaneous power delivery is due to the multi-stage turbocharging used for the first time in this version of the in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine, along with variable turbine geometry for the low-pressure stage of the system. Increased by 30 to 650 Nm, the maximum torque of the new drive unit goes on stream at between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm – a power boost that especially results in enhanced sprint capacity. For example, the BMW 730d and the BMW 730d xDrive have improved their acceleration from zero to 100 km/h by 0.2 seconds each to 5.9 and 5.6 seconds respectively.

The new diesel engine now also used in the BMW 740d xDrive models BMW 740d xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.4 – 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 142 – 136 g/km), BMW 740Ld xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.4 – 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 143 – 137 g/km), BMW X3 M40d (combined fuel consumption: 6.0 – 5.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 157 – 148 g/km), BMW X4 M40d (combined fuel consumption: 5.9 – 5.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 156 – 147 g/km) und BMW X7 xDrive40d (combined fuel consumption: 6.6 – 6.4 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 173 – 167 g/km) generates even greater pulling power. Its multi-stage turbocharging system comprises a high-pressure and a low-pressure turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. As a result, a maximum torque of 700 Nm is delivered between 1,750 and 2,250 rpm. The engine reaches its peak output of 250 kW/340 hp at 4 400 rpm. In the BMW 740d xDrive, for example, this increased power helps achieve a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h that is also improved by 0.2 seconds to 5.0 seconds.

The two new engines are feature exhaust gas treatment technology with engine-related components consisting of a diesel oxidation catalytic converter and an SCR coating on the diesel particulate filter. For optimum reduction of nitrogen oxide (NO_X) emissions, a second dosage unit is additionally integrated at the outlet of the engine-related SCR system. As a result, the models powered by the new in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines meet the Euro 6d emissions standard.

Expansion of the model range for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé model range will be extended from July 2020 with the addition of two new engine variants. A new entry-level diesel engine and an additional all-wheel drive model variant are available for the sporty, elegant four-door model in the premium compact segment. The new BMW 218d Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 4.5 – 4.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 118 – 109 g/km) is powered by the latest version of a 4-cylinder diesel engine. The BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology in the 2.0-litre power unit now includes a two-stage turbocharging system as well as a likewise further developed common rail direct injection featuring solenoid valve injectors. The new engine delivers its maximum torque of 350 Nm between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm, reaching a maximum output of 110 kW/150 hp at 4,000 rpm. The new BMW 218d Gran Coupé accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual transmission and in 8.5 seconds with the optional 8-speed Steptronic transmission.

The second diesel engine available for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé delivers a maximum output of 140 kW/190 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. In the new BMW 220d xDrive Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 4.9 – 4.5 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 129 – 119 g/km) it is now combined with intelligent all-wheel drive and an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. This enables the new model variant to accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. Thanks to state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment including SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue injection, both new models meet the Euro 6d emissions standard.

Green light for BMW eDrive Zone: locally emissions-free travel in the city on an automated basis.
Innovative technology from the fields of electrification and digitalisation is combined in the new BMW eDrive Zone function available in the premium car manufacturer’s plug-in hybrid models. This globally unique digital service offers additional options for making optimum use of the capabilities of emissions-free driving. The BMW eDrive Zone function triggers an automatic switch to purely electric operating mode as soon as the vehicle enters selected urban areas such as low-emission zones.

BMW eDrive Zone will be a standard feature of all plug-in hybrid models of the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series and BMW 7 Series as well as the BMW X5. The digital service uses geo-fencing technology via GPS to identify designated areas. eDrive zones of this kind are currently designated in some 80 cities throughout Europe. When the service is activated, each available eDrive Zone on the navigation map is graphically highlighted in the Control Display: a message appears to inform the driver that the vehicle will automatically switch to electric driving mode as soon as it enters an eDrive Zone.

From summer 2020, the above-mentioned plug-in hybrid models will also be fitted with an integrated drive-ready sound for electric power as standard. This means that both starting and stopping the electric drive will be accompanied by a distinctive acoustic signal. In addition there has been an expansion of the range of preconditioning functions, which is also a standard feature. Depending on the equipment fitted, more functions will be available that can be activated remotely by smartphone, in addition to interior cooling and heating. In future it will also be possible to activate the seat climate control before the start of a journey, for example. In the same way it will be possible to include the seat, steering wheel, exterior mirror and rear window heating systems in the preconditioning for heating the interior, as well as heating of the cameras for the driver assistance systems.

BMW 3 Series Sedan and BMW 3 Series Touring now fitted with BMW Operating System 7 as standard.
In the new BMW 3 Series, the latest generation of the display and control system will be a standard feature as of summer 2020. Previously only used in conjunction with BMW Live Cockpit Professional, BMW Operating System 7 offers extensive individualisation and personalisation of the content shown on the Control Display. The standard BMW Live Cockpit now also includes a redesigned instrument cluster with a 5.1-inch digital display at its centre. BMW Live Cockpit Plus, like BMW Live Cockpit Professional, also includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. This digital companion enables intuitive operation of numerous vehicle functions via voice control (“Hey, BMW”). In the BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, BMW Operating System 7 will also be part of the optional BMW Live Cockpit Plus from July 2020.

The M sports seats are new to the range of optional extras for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan and the new BMW 3 Series Touring. They feature excellent lateral support, a wide range of adjustment options and headrests with embossed M logo. The M sports seats for driver and front passenger are available in conjunction with the Model M Sport equipment line as well as for the BMW M automobiles of the new BMW 3 Series. The choice of exterior colours for the new BMW 3 Series is supplemented by the variant Phytonic Blue metallic.

Increased comfort and safety: Driving Assistant Professional with additional functions.
The optional Driving Assistant Professional is a particularly comprehensive collection of driver assistance systems designed to optimise comfort and safety: it is being used by BMW to pave the way to automated driving in numerous current models. The focus is on the steering and lane guidance assistant, which will be enhanced with additional functions from summer 2020 in the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series and BMW 8 Series, in the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7, and in all variants of the BMW M5 and BMW M8.

The new Active Navigation Guidance indicates lane changes that are necessary in order to continue driving along the selected route when destination guidance is active. The driver can then carry out this operation conveniently with the aid of the lane change assistant. Emergency Lane Assistant is another new function: this automatically guides the vehicle to the ideal edge of its lane in congested situations on motorways. In addition, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function will in future include an adaptive distance control that adapts to the respective traffic situation and environmental conditions.

Further progress is also being made in the intelligent control of the Speed Limit Info system with No Passing Indicator. In all model variants of the BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series, BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, the BMW Z4, the BMW X5, the BMW X6 and the BMW X7 as well as the BMW M5, the BMW M8, the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M, road sign detection will in future additionally take into account speed limits that are restricted in time and only apply on certain days of the week. On days other, the speed limit derived from the navigation data is displayed.

Optimised smartphone integration: Android Auto can now also be used in the vehicle in addition to Apple CarPlay.
Depending on the model series, either standard or optional smartphone integration will enable use not just of Apple CarPlay but also of the digital services provided by Android Auto in numerous current BMW models as of summer 2020. This means that owners of a smartphone with the Android operating system can now access their familiar smartphone apps in the vehicle, just like users of an Apple iPhone. These include the digital voice assistant Google Assistant, the map service Google Maps, music streaming services such as Spotify and Amazon Music, and the messaging service WhatsApp.

The systems are integrated directly in the vehicle's display and control system via a wireless LAN connection between the respective smartphone and the vehicle. Here, the driver can view all the important information from the apps on the Control Display and also navigation directions in the instrument cluster and the optional Head-Up Display.

BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series with optimised Integral Active Steering.
Sporty flair and ride comfort in the BMW 7 Series luxury sedans and the luxury sports cars of the BMW 8 Series benefit from Integral Active Steering. The optional suspension system combines a variable rack and pinion ratio on the front axle with selective co-steering of the rear wheels. Even at particularly low speeds of less than 3 km/h, the rear wheels are now countersteered. This gives the models of the BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series additional manoeuvrability when moving slowly in and out of parking spaces or passing through narrow gaps.

In addition, the BMW 7 Series will be available from July 2020 in the new exterior paint finish Phytonic Blue metallic and the BMW Individual paint finish Frozen Bluestone metallic. A fresh touch of luxury ambience is added to the interior with the BMW Individual leather steering wheel as well as the new version of the BMW Individual Merino full leather trim in the colour combination Smoke White/Night Blue/Black.

Extended Business Package for the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer, new body finishes for the BMW i3 and numerous other models
The Business Package available for the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer provides enhanced comfort and driving pleasure in city traffic as well as on lengthier trips. From July 2020 onwards it also includes Real Time Traffic Information. Another new addition to the range is the body finish in Cashmere Silver metallic, which is also available for the BMW X1. The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer will also offered in Phytonic Blue metallic and Misano Blue metallic in future.

New body finishes are available for numerous other models, too. Phytonic Blue metallic and Sunset Orange metallic versions of the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé will be on offer from July 2020. The body finish Phytonic Blue metallic will also be available for the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7 as of August 2020. What is more, the BMW X5 and BMW X6 can be fitted with the new Carbon Fibre interior trim finishers and M Carbon exterior mirror caps in conjunction with the M sports package.

The purely electrically powered models BMW i3 (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) and BMW i3s (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 14.6 – 14.0 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) will be available from summer 2020 in the new body finish Blue Ridge Mountain with accentuations in Frozen Grey metallic.

Meanwhile new BMW Individual body finishes are available for the model variants of the high-performance sports car BMW M8. For the BMW M8 Series Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 10.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 242 g/km*) and the BMW M8 Convertible (combined fuel consumption: 10.8 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 246 g/km), the Ametrin metallic variant is now newly available. For both models and for the BMW M8 Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 10.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 244 g/km), the versions Bluestone metallic, Frozen Brands Hatch Grey metallic and Frozen Motegi Red metallic are likewise available.

Munich. The BMW X5 and the BMW X6 now also feature highly efficient mild hybrid technology to optimise the spontaneous power delivery and effectiveness of the drive system. As from May 2020, the new BMW X5 xDrive40d (combined fuel consumption: 6.4 – 5.9 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 167 – 154 g/km) and the new BMW X6 xDrive40d (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 – 5.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 164 – 153 g/km) will boast a newly developed straight six-cylinder diesel engine with a 48-volt starter generator. Thanks to the power output of the combustion engine being increased to 250 kW/340 hp, and the electrically assisted mild hybrid system, the superior forward thrust of the luxury-class Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) is experienced even more intensively.

Sporty and agile handling on the road as well as robust off-road versatility are hallmarks of the driving characteristics of the BMW X5 and the BMW X6. With the strong presence of its powerful and elegant design and a luxurious interior ambience also in the current model generation, the two founders of each of their segments make an impressive statement. Moreover, high-quality comfort features and advanced technology in the areas of operation and digitalisation contribute towards the driving pleasure experienced in the two BMW X models. The latest innovations in the field of drive technology now complement the engine portfolio of the SAV and the SAC with a diesel engine combining pulling power and efficiency in a particularly convincing manner. 

Straight six-cylinder diesel engine with multi-stage turbocharging and optimised direct fuel injection.
The BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology featured by the new 3-litre straight six-cylinder power plant comprises a two-stage turbocharging system and Common Rail piezo direct fuel injection. The spontaneous response characteristics of the supercharging system are enhanced by variable turbo geometry for the high and low pressure stages. With up to 10 injections per cycle, the injectors feed fuel to the combustion chamber at a pressure of up to 2,700 bar. The new pressure sensor integrated into the injector ensures exceptionally precise dosing as well as favourable fuel economy and clean combustion.

The new diesel engine develops a maximum torque of 700 Nm becoming available between 1,750 and 2,250 rpm. The engine achieves a maximum power output of 250 kW/340 hp at 4,400 rpm. Whether on the road or on off-road terrain, power is transferred in the new BMW X5 xDrive40d and the new BMW X6 xDrive40d via an 8-speed Steptronic transmission and intelligent BMW xDrive four-wheel technology, which – thanks to a rear-wheel accentuated set-up – enhances agility during dynamic cornering.  

Two-stage NOX exhaust gas treatment, which was introduced as a standard feature on diesel models in 2012, has been further developed. This component, which is close to the engine, now comprises an oxidation catalyst converter and an SCR coating on the particulate filter. For optimum reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions a second dosage unit has been integrated at the outlet of the SCR system. Therefore, the new BMW X5 xDrive40d and the new BMW X6 xDrive40d now already comply with the mandatory regulations of the Euro 6d emission standard, which will not take effect until the beginning of 2021.

Mild hybrid technology: Additional electric output of 8 kW/11 hp increases sprinting power whilst reducing consumption.
The new diesel engine is assisted by the 48-volt starter generator of the mild hybrid system. The additional electric output of 8 kW/11 hp promotes both spontaneous power delivery and effectiveness of the drive system. Electric boost enhances dynamics when starting and accelerating. Therefore, the new BMW X5 xDrive40d and the new BMW X6 xDrive40d are each able to sprint from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.5 seconds. Thanks to the additional electric output,
the combustion engine is able at constant speeds to run particularly frequently within an efficiency-optimised load range, thus reducing consumption peaks.

The starter generator obtains the necessary energy from the 48-volt battery, which also supplies all electric driving functions with power via the 12-volt vehicle electrical system. It is charged by means of recuperation during acceleration and braking phases and also through a targeted combustion engine load point increase. Ride comfort also benefits significantly from the mild hybrid technology featured in the new BMW X5 xDrive40d and the new BMW X6 xDrive40d. The supportive effect of the 48-volt starter generator facilitates extremely fast and comfortable load change responses. Moreover, the powerful generator provides for spontaneous and low-vibration starting and re-starting of the combustion engine when using the Auto Start Stop and “sailing” functions. As a result, it is also possible to not only disconnect the engine during the sailing phases, but also to switch it off entirely. In order to make use of the economising effect as frequently as possible, the comfort-optimised sailing function is now no longer only available in the ECO-PRO mode, but also in the COMFORT mode of the Driving Experience Control feature.

Munich. From the spring of 2020, BMW will contribute towards a further reduction of consumption levels and the optimisation of the emission performance of current models through the use of systematically evolved drive technology. In parallel with the expansion of the range of models featuring all-electric and plug-in hybrid drive scheduled to follow during the course of the year, both the efficiency and the exhaust emission quality of petrol-driven vehicles will be significantly increased.  This is ensured, inter alia, by innovative mild hybrid technology which, following the BMW 5 Series, will as from March/April also be deployed in the BMW 3 Series as well as the model series BMW X3 and BMW X4. At the same time, in the spring of 2020, 33 further BMW models will already comply with the Euro 6d emission standard, which will not become obligatory until 2021.

A further drive variant for the BMW 1 Series as well as additional engines for the BMW 3 Series Sedan and the BMW 3 Series Touring will enhance the diversity of available options in the premium compact and premium midrange segment. Additional options for interior design provide for greater individuality in the BMW X5, the BMW X6 and the BMW X7.

Electric pulling power for efficiency and dynamics: Mild hybrid technology with 48-volt starter generator for further models. 

BMW is extending the use of mild hybrid technology to further models. This innovation, first introduced in the autumn of 2019 for the four model variants of the BMW 520d (combined fuel consumption: 4.9 – 4.1 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 112 – 108 g/km), comprises an extremely powerful 48-volt starter generator as well as an additional battery, and enhances both efficiency and dynamics of vehicles equipped with this technology. As from the spring of 2020, mild hybrid technology will also be featured as standard in the models BMW 320d Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 4.1 – 4.0 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 107 – 105 g/km), the BMW 320d Touring (combined fuel consumption: 4.3 – 4.2 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 112 – 109 g/km), the BMW 320d xDrive Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 4.4 – 4.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 117 – 114 g/km), the BMW 320d xDrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 4.5 – 4.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 119 – 117 g/km), the BMW X3 xDrive20d (combined fuel consumption: 5.1 – 4.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 134 – 126 g/km) and the BMW X4 xDrive20d (combined fuel consumption: 5.1 – 4.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 133 – 125 g/km).

Mild hybrid technology provides significantly greater possibilities to make use of brake energy recuperation. The energy recuperated when accelerating and braking is not only used to provide electrically powered vehicle functions with energy but also to generate additional drive power. The 48-volt starter generator delivers an additional power output of up to 8 kW/11 hp. The electric over-boost is made available very spontaneously, thus enhancing dynamics when starting off and accelerating from a standstill.  During the journey, the electric over-boost can be used to support the combustion engine, enabling it to run as frequently as possible within an efficiency-optimised load range and to reduce consumption peaks. Moreover, when driving within inefficient operational ranges, it is possible to supply the 48-volt battery with additional energy from the starter generator by raising the load point when required.

Furthermore, the 48-volt starter generator provides for exceptionally smooth switching off as well as a faster and thus more comfortable re-starting of the combustion engine when the Auto Start Stop function is used at road junctions or in traffic jams. When the vehicle decelerates, the combustion engine can be disconnected at a speed of less than 15 km/h. The kinetic energy gained when decelerating further to a standstill is then used for recuperation. The efficiency-enhancing effect of the “coasting” function has also been optimised. At a speed of up to 160 km/h, the combustion engine is no longer switched into idle mode but is completely disconnected. During the journey, engine re-start is also fast and comfortable. The optimised “coasting” function is available both in the COMFORT and ECO-PRO modes of the Driving Experience Switch.

Optimised emission performance: 40 BMW models now already fulfil the future Euro 6d emission standard.

With yet a further optimisation of the emission performance of numerous models, BMW is preparing well in advance for future legal requirements governing exhaust emissions. As from the spring of 2020, 33 further models from various model series will fulfil the Euro 6d exhaust emission standard. Consequently, 40 BMW models comply with the demands specified by the more stringent standard a year prior to the new emission regulation coming into force.

The vehicles that will already comply with the Euro 6d emission standard as from the spring of 2020 include model variants of the BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series and BMW 3 Series as well as the BMW X1, BMW X2, BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X5 and the BMW X6.

New drive variants for the BMW 1 Series, the BMW 3 Series Sedan and the BMW 3 Series Touring.

Starting in March 2020, additional drive variants will increase the diversity of the BMW 1 Series and BMW 3 Series model range. The BMW 120d (combined fuel consumption: 4.6 – 4.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 121 – 112 g/km) will be added to the model range in the premium compact segment. The power generated by the car’s 2-litre, 140 kW/190 hp four-cylinder diesel power unit featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology is transferred to the front wheels via a standard 8-speed Steptronic transmission, allowing the new BMW 120d to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds and to reach a top speed of 231 km/h. The new BMW 120d is one of the models that already fulfil the Euro 6d emission standard.

A new four-cylinder petrol engine with a displacement of 2 litres and BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology complements the drive portfolio for the new BMW 3 Series. The power unit for the new BMW 318i Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 5.7 – 5.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 130 – 120 g/km) and the new BMW 318i Touring (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 – 5.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 140 – 130 g/km) delivers a maximum power output of 115 kW/156 hp and a peak torque of 250 Nm. The standard equipment range for the new BMW 3 Series entry model includes an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/ is 8.4 seconds for the Sedan and 8.7 seconds for the Touring model. Top speed is 223 km/h (BMW 318i Sedan) and 220 km/h (BMW 318i Touring) respectively.

BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series with extended standard configuration, additional offer of leather options and interior trims for the BMW X5, the BMW X6 and the BMW X7.

From March 2020, a broader range of standard features will enhance comfort in the luxury-class models of the BMW 7 Series and the BMW 8 Series. In future, BMW 7 Series luxury sedans, BMW 8 Series luxury sports cars as well as the high-performance models BMW M8 Competition Coupe (combined fuel consumption: 10.6 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 242 g/km), BMW M8 Competition Convertible (combined fuel consumption: 10.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 246 g/km) and BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupe (combined fuel consumption: 10.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 244 g/km) will be equipped with an automatic soft-close function for the doors.

Thanks to a wider selection of leather options and interior trims, there are now new possibilities to individualise the models BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7. As from April, the leather trim perforated Vernasca in the colour Canberra Beige is additionally available for these three models. In the future, the BMW X6 can be ordered with the leather trim perforated Vernasca in the colour Cognac. Likewise available for the Sports Activity Coupe are the extended BMW Individual leather options Merino in the colours Tartufo and Ivory White and the colour combination Ivory White/Night Blue as well as the BMW Individual all-leather interior trim Merino in the colours Coffee and Tartufo. Also new in the range of options for the BMW X6: High-grade Poplar Grain, Anthracite-Brown, open-pored.

Fuel consumption, CO2 emission figures and power consumption were measured using the methods required according to Regulation (EC) 2007/715 as amended. The figures are calculated using a vehicle fitted with basic equipment in Germany, the ranges stated take into account differences in selected wheel and tyre sizes as well as the optional equipment. They may change during configuration.

The figures have already been calculated based on the new WLTP test cycle and adapted to NEDC for comparison purposes. In these vehicles, different figures than those published here may apply for the assessment of taxes and other vehicle-related duties which are (also) based on CO2 emissions.

From November the third generation of the BMW X6 (combined fuel consumption: 10.7-6.1 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 243–172 g/km*) will enrich the segment of Sports Activity Coupés (SAC) with its extroverted looks, outstanding performance and provocative design. Only a few months later, the new BMW X5 M (fuel consumption combined: 13.0-12.8 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 296-291 g/km*) and the new BMW X6 M (combined fuel consumption: 12.7-12.5 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 289–284 g/km*) will set new standards in the high performance SAV/SAC segment from spring 2020. Powered by potent 4.4 litre V8 petrol engines with BMW M TwinPower Turbo Technology and 441 kW/600 hp and 460 kW/625 hp in the respective Competition variants, the new M models stand for thrilling driving dynamics. A wide range of M Performance Parts for enhancing the sporty character and customising the visual appeal even further will be available for this trio of luxurious power models as well as for the BMW X7 (fuel consumption combined: 11.1-6.5 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 252–171 g/km*).

These high-grade accessories developed by BMW M GmbH, are the result of extensive motorsport expertise gained on the world’s racetracks. All components are perfectly matched to the specific characters of the BMW X6, BMW X7 as well as BMW X6 M and BMW X5 M. With these parts customers can further enhance the visual appeal and sporty characteristics of their car and customise it according to their personal tastes. The M Performance Parts do not only affect the car’s looks of course. They also meet the highest functional requirements with regard to lightweight construction and aerodynamics.

Exterior: Carbon fibre for striking looks and improved aerodynamics.
The athletic character of the BMW X6 and X6 M as well as BMW X5 M can be impressively enhanced with a large number of M Performance Exterior Carbon Fibre components. Manufactured by hand and sealed with a clear finish, the components are given a high-gloss polish for an impressive depth effect. The honeycomb structure, which is so characteristic for this material, makes these carbon-fibre reinforced plastic components so thrilling to look at. The carbon fibre M Performance ornamental grille for the radiator grille and the carbon fibre M Performance side sill inserts as well as the carbon fibre rear diffuser, which will be available shortly afterwards, give the car purebred racing flair. The diffuser also optimises the air stream at the rear of the car together with the M Performance high-gloss black rear fins and the M Performance high-gloss black roof edge spoiler for the BMW X5 M. These parts also positively affect directional stability and straight-running capability.

M Performance Frozen Black Wrapping is another visual highlight for the BMW X6. This consists of a matt black and grey strip with M Performance inscription, which stretches along the side of the car and effectively emphasises the design features of the SAC. The perfectly matching front high-gloss black wrapping upgrades the front of the BMW X6 while the high-gloss black model inscription enhances the rear looks of the BMW X7. The M Performance carbon fibre exterior mirror caps add another stylish and sporty touch to the striking looks of the BMW X7.

Sports brake system and wheel sets for improved handling.
The M Performance brake system installed in the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M as standard is optionally available for the BMW X6. Thanks to its larger, inner-vented and perforated lightweight construction brake discs, it offers further improved braking response, optimised deceleration even under extreme conditions as well as maximum resilience. The brake calipers finished in red are also a visual highlight which stand out especially in combination with open wheel designs, For all four models a number of these are available in sizes ranging up to 22 inches for summer wheel sets and up to 21 inches for winter wheel sets.

The 22 inch M Performance light alloy wheel Star Spoke Styling 749 M, available in either burnished Jet Black and matt black for the BMW X6 for example, combines physical lightness with extraordinary design and sporty performance. Thanks to a special manufacturing process, the wheel weighs approximately one kilogram less than a comparable cast wheel. This optimises steering behaviour and improves driving dynamics overall. The weight-optimised 22 inch M Performance matt/burnished Jet Black forged wheel Y-Spoke Styling 785 M for the BMW X7 in extravagant bicolor look also emphasises the luxurious character of the vehicle. The M Performance light alloy wheel Double Spoke Styling 809 M with mixed tyres (front: 295/35 ZR21 107Y XL; rear: 315/30 ZR22 107Y XL) for BMW X5 M, BMW X6 M and its Competition models in matt Jet Black with colour M Performance print on the other hand radiate unfiltered motorsport ambience.

High performance atmosphere in the luxurious interior.
The already striking motorsport character of the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M and the respective Competition models can be enhanced even further. With the M Performance steering wheel the driver has a perfect grip on the action even under dynamic driving conditions. This is due to the extremely high-grip alcantara handling area with large thumbrests and special underlining for excellent stability and a direct steering feel. In addition to standard details such as the red centre marking and the silver-grey, hand-sewn cross-stitch, the M Performance steering wheel is also available with M Performance steering wheel trim in carbon fibre with M Performance inscription and alcantara insert. To match this, the shift paddles can also be selected in an M Performance finish featuring carbon fabric instead of the standard chrome surface. For example there are the M Performance floor mats with M Performance inscription, a pennant in the hallmark M colours and a surround in leather look including decorative seam in contrasting colours. A very stylish motorsport-inspired extra for the BMW X6 and BMW X7, which is standard in the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M, are the optionally available set of stainless steel pedal rests and the stainless steel footrest.

Experience the M Performance spirit even when the car is stationary.
The four BMW X models radiate the thrill of motorsport and of M Performance in particular even at a standstill. For example the M Performance slide set for the BMW LED door projectors is a very eye-catching option. When the doors are opened, it projects the BMW M logo or other M Performance motifs onto the asphalt. The M Performance key holder made of high-quality alcantara with carbon fibre insert makes the look and feel of the the M performance idea come alive. Thanks to internal hex screw in M Light Blue, the car key is firmly connected to the holder and therefore effectively protected from being scratched or damaged. The M Performance tyre bags made of high-quality and resilient plastic protect wheels sized up to 22 inches. They not only make storing and transporting the wheels a clean and safe affair, but also bring a racing feel to your garage thanks to their distinctive M Performance design. And each bag is clearly marked so allocating tyres is easy.

Munich. This September, the Frankfurt Motor Show will provide the backdrop for the world premiere of the third-generation BMW X6 (fuel consumption combined: 10.7–6.1 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 243–159 g/km)*, the car that established the Sports Activity Coupé segment a good ten years ago. At the event, BMW will also present a spectacular one-off vehicle with a Vantablack^® VBx2 nanostructure paint finish that highlights the expressive design language and confident, dominant and muscular appearance of the new BMW X6 to perfection. This exclusive show car is the result of a collaboration between BMW and Surrey NanoSystems, the inventors of the Vantablack technology.

The BMW X6 is the first and only vehicle in the world to feature a Vantablack VBx2 paint finish. “We turned down numerous requests from various automobile manufacturers in the past,” explains Ben Jensen, founder and Chief Technical Officer of Surrey NanoSystems. “It took the BMW X6 and its unique, expressive design for us to entertain the idea.” With design highlights like the optional Iconic Glow kidney grille, distinctive twin headlights and striking taillights, the new BMW X6 provides fascinating contrasts to offset the Vantablack VBx2 paint finish, which changes the viewer’s visual perception of an object’s three-dimensional shape.

The human eye perceives Vantablack as two-dimensional.
A surface coated in Vantablack loses its defining features to the human eye, with objects appearing two-dimensional. This can be interpreted by the brain as staring into a hole or even a void, making Vantablack a rather unsuitable vehicle paint finish, as it blots out virtually all the design details and highlights. For this reason, the BMW X6 was coated in the VBx2 variant initially developed for use in architectural and scientific applications. This coating can be sprayed on and has a one-per-cent total hemispherical reflectance (THR), meaning it is still considered “super black” while enabling a small amount of reflection from every angle. Thus, materials painted with it seem to lose their three-dimensional appearance – as demonstrated impressively on the BMW X6.

Vantablack: the “blackest black”, developed for aerospace applications.
The name Vantablack has already become synonymous with an entire range of extremely black coatings and paints such as VBx2. It contains an acronym of the technology enabling this superior black in its first two syllables, which stand for Vertically Aligned Nano Tube Array, a matrix made out of carbon. Each of these carbon nanotubes has a length of 14 to 50 micrometres, with a diameter of 20 nanometres, making it around 5,000 times thinner than a human hair. As a result, around a billion of these vertically aligned carbon nanotubes fit into one square centimetre. Any light striking this surface is almost completely absorbed rather than reflected, and effectively converted into heat.

This technology was initially developed for coating space-borne components. As Vantablack can be applied at temperatures from as low as 430 degrees Celsius, it is suitable for delicate materials such as aluminium, and optical components coated in Vantablack enable observation of faint stars and distant galaxies that stray light from the sun makes difficult to detect. The first generation of Vantablack introduced by Surrey NanoSystems in 2014 absorbed up to 99.965 per cent of light, almost completely eliminating reflectance and stray light.

An interview with Ben Jensen, Vantablack inventor and founder of Surrey NanoSystems.

What was your first thought when you were approached with the idea of providing the BMW X6 with a Vantablack paint finish?
Ben Jensen: To be honest, we received inquiries from most of the big-name automotive manufacturers, almost from the day we launched the original material in 2014, but we’d always said no. This was also due to the fact that we only had a suitable material once we came up with VBx2. When we were approached by BMW, we were still quite hesitant to begin with. But the new X6 looked so incredibly different that it just felt like a really good fit.

Have your expectations been met?
Jensen: I think it went beyond all our expectations. The BMW X6 in Vantablack looks absolutely fantastic. We also realised that it wouldn’t have worked if we’d put on the original material, as the viewer would have lost all sense of three-dimensionality. VBx2 with its one-per-cent reflectance provides just enough of a hint of shape. Add to that the contrast between the matt black surface and details such as the Iconic Glow kidney grille, the headlights and the windows – everything is just set off beautifully.

Hypothetically speaking, could you imagine Vantablack VBx2 becoming a regular paint finish option for people buying a car in the future?
Jensen: I think it worked really well on the BMW X6, because of the size of the car, its distinctive shape, and how imposing it is. But putting a paint like that on a conventional car lacking a distinctive design would probably detract from it in some way. In addition, developing a Vantablack VBx2 car paint durable enough for daily use is a huge technological challenge.

However, Vantablack already has an important role in advanced automotive technology …
Jensen: Indeed, the material is now being used more and more in various types of, laser-based sensor equipment for driver assistance systems and technologies for autonomous driving, for instance. That is because incident sunlight can cause a degradation of performance in these systems as well. A Vantablack coating eliminates these issues and results in increased safety.

An interview with Hussein Al Attar, Creative Director Automotive Design at Designworks and the designer responsible for the new BMW X6.

What does it mean to you that “your” BMW X6 is the first car in the world to have been chosen for such a project by the makers of Vantablack?
Al Attar: I first heard about Vantablack a few years ago – and I’ve been absolutely fascinated with the technology ever since. So, for me personally, this is a big deal. When my colleagues told me about a possible collaboration some months ago, I was very excited.

What makes the BMW X6 the perfect car for this project?
Al Attar: Internally, we often refer to the BMW X6 as “The Beast.” I think that says it all. The Vantablack VBx2 finish emphasises this aspect and makes the BMW X6 look particularly menacing. Moreover, the BMW X6 has always been the most provocative and in-your-face model in our portfolio. So why not emphasise this even further, with a finish that simply captivates the viewer’s attention? After all, that’s what the BMW X6 has always been about.

But a Vantablack finish makes objects appear two-dimensional. Doesn’t that render it supremely unsuitable as a car paint, especially for a car with a design as expressive as the BMW X6?
Al Attar: Yes, there is a certain inherent contradiction. But that’s exactly what makes this interesting and explains why the BMW X6 is the perfect car for this project. In addition, Vantablack VBx2 opens up new possibilities for us as designers. We often prefer to talk about silhouettes and proportions rather than surfaces and lines. The Vantablack VBx2 coating foregrounds these fundamental aspects of automotive design, without any distraction from light and reflections. I am very proud of how beautiful the new BMW X6 has turned out, including its bold and expressive surfaces. But the most remarkable evolution over the predecessor concerns its proportions. And that is precisely what Vantablack underscores, albeit in a rather unexpected fashion.

Hypothetically speaking, could you imagine Vantablack VBx2 becoming a regular paint finish option for people buying a car in the future?
Al Attar: Absolutely. BMW X6 drivers are among our most extrovert and free-spirited customers. If anyone were to opt for a Vantablack paint option, it would definitely be a BMW X6 driver.

Third-generation BMW X6 to start in November 2019.
The latest incarnation of the car that established the innovative and distinctive Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) segment will have its world premiere at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, from 12 to 22 September. The showroom launch will begin shortly afterwards, in November 2019. The third-generation BMW X6 employs a precise and exclusive design language to underscore its confident, dominant appearance. In addition, its advanced powertrain and chassis technology combines with numerous innovations to provide a uniquely sporty yet luxurious driving experience. Like its predecessors, the new BMW X6 is produced at the BMW plant in Spartanburg in the United States.

Munich. The new BMW X6 blends the agile and versatile driving properties of a Sports Activity Vehicle with the head-turning looks of a coupe. The third-generation X6 employs a clean, exclusive design language to underscore its confident and commanding appearance. And advanced powertrain and chassis technology teams up with a wealth of innovations to deliver a uniquely sporting yet also luxurious driving experience. Like its predecessor, the new BMW X6 will be produced in the US at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. The market launch will begin in November 2019.

Dynamically stretched proportions exude sporting prowess.
The new BMW X6 has grown by 26 millimetres in exterior length over the outgoing model (to 4,935 mm) and by 15 mm in width (to 2,004 mm). It now stands 6 mm lower (at 1,696 mm) and combines dynamically stretched proportions with exceptional visual muscularity. The car’s wheelbase has increased by 42 mm to 2,975 millimetres.

The large, single-frame BMW kidney grille is the most striking feature of the front end, the outer edges of the kidney grille now approaching the headlights at a clearly defined angle. The new BMW X6 is available for the first time as an option with an illuminated BMW kidney grille, which adds an exclusive flourish to the exterior design. The illumination is activated by opening or closing the car, but the driver can switch it on and off manually too. This lighting function for the kidney grille is also available while driving.

If the optional BMW Laserlight with Adaptive LED headlights is specified, a BMW Laserlight spotlight with Selective Beam optimises the non-dazzling high beam function, whose range increases to around 500 metres. BMW Laserlight can be identified by the blue x-shaped elements inside the signature BMW twin headlights. The flanks of the new X6 are defined by familiar BMW proportions, a crisply drawn character line and the dynamic roofline. 19-inch light-alloy wheels are fitted as standard, with other wheel variants ranging in size from 20 to 22 inches available as an option. The BMW X6 M50i and BMW X6 M50d come with 21-inch light-alloy wheels as standard.

The new BMW X6 is available from launch in xLine and M Sport model variants as an alternative to standard specification. The two equipment lines each have their own distinctive design cues.

Interior: an exclusive ambience imbued with sporting flair.
The interior of the new BMW X6 is geared squarely to delivering an exclusive and dynamic driving experience. Clear structures lend the cabin a modern and sporty appearance. The design of the cockpit, complete with the new arrangement and design of the control elements, represents a progressive re‑interpretation of the driver focus for which BMW is renowned. The new BMW X6 comes as standard with Vernasca leather upholstery.

The interior offers a high degree of variability, thanks to 40:20:40 split rear seat backrests that can be folded down to increase boot capacity from 580 to 1,530 litres. Highlight equipment features from the list of optional extras include multifunction seats with massage function for the driver and front passenger, four-zone automatic climate control, thermoelectric cup holders, glass applications for selected controls, the Panorama glass roof Sky Lounge, the Ambient Air interior fragrancing package and the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond+ 3D Surround Sound System.

Four powerful engines and an M duo from launch.
The line-up of engines available for the new BMW X6 from launch includes two petrol units and a pair of diesel variants from the latest generation. The model line-up is spearheaded by a BMW M model with a newly developed 390 kW/530 hp V8 petrol engine. The BMW X6 M50i (fuel consumption combined: 10.7–10.4 l/100 km [26.4–27.2 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 243–237 g/km)* is joined in the range by the BMW X6 M50d (fuel consumption combined: 7.2–6.9 l/100 km [39.2‑40.9 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 190–181 g/km)* with 294 kW/400 hp six-cylinder in‑line diesel engine and a quartet of turbochargers. A straight-six petrol unit with output of 250 kW/340 hp sees action in the BMW X6 xDrive40i (fuel consumption combined: 8.6–8.0 l/100 km [32.8–35.3 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 197–181 g/km)*, and the BMW X6 xDrive30d (fuel consumption combined: 6.6–6.1 l/100 km [42.8–46.3 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 172–159 g/km)* employs a six-cylinder in-line diesel with 195 kW/265 hp. All variants of the new BMW X6 fulfil the requirements of the EU6d-TEMP emissions standard. The M Sport exhaust system fitted as standard on both M models is also available as an option for the other versions of the BMW X6 or as part of the M Sport package, and gives the car an unmistakable and emotionally rich aural presence.

All new BMW X6 models come as standard with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, while intelligent all-wheel drive maximises traction, agility and directional stability. The latest generation of the BMW xDrive system once again splits drive torque between the front and rear wheels variably and as the situation demands – only now with even greater precision and speed. In situations which do not require all-wheel drive, drive can be channelled entirely to the rear wheels in the interests of efficiency. The xDrive system also maintains a rear-wheel bias in particularly dynamic driving situations. The car’s sporting attributes are aided by the electronically controlled M differential lock at the rear axle available as part of M Sport specification or in conjunction with the optional xOffroad package.

Perfectly tuned chassis systems enhance sporting responses, comfort levels and off-road prowess.
A double-wishbone front axle and five-link rear axle give the new BMW X6 the ideal suspension tools to deliver dynamism and ride comfort on the road, plus unshakable traction off the beaten track. Dynamic Damper Control is included as standard, the Adaptive M suspension Professional with active roll stabilisation and Integral Active Steering endows the car with exceptionally agile and dynamic driving qualities, and the new BMW X6 is also available with two-axle air suspension including automatic self-levelling. The car’s height can be altered at the touch of a button in the cockpit through a maximum 80 millimetres. An off-road package is available for all model variants with the exception of the BMW X6 M50i and BMW X6 M50d, allowing the driver to choose from four modes that optimise progress over snow, sand, gravel or rocks respectively. And at the press of a button, they can also activate the ideal settings for the vehicle’s ride height, the xDrive system, accelerator response, transmission control and the DSC system’s corrective inputs.

Innovative driver assistance systems offering new functions.
An extensive selection of standard and optional driver assistance systems mark out the new BMW X6 as an exceptionally innovative Sports Activity Coupe. Fresh from the addition of myriad new functions, the systems do an extremely effective job in enhancing comfort and safety. Standard specification for the new BMW X6 includes Cruise Control with braking function and the Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function, which also alerts the driver when a cyclist is detected. The Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function is available as an option. The Driving Assistant Professional can also be found on the options list for the new BMW X6. This complete package of safety- and comfort-enhancing tech includes both the steering and lane control assistant with Traffic jam assistant and lane keeping assistant with active side collision protection. The Evasion Assistant is another component of the Driving Assistant Professional, as are the rear collision warning, road priority warning and wrong-way driving warning systems, crossing traffic warning, Lane Change Warning and the Emergency Stop Assistant. The innovative reversing assistant, which helps the driver when exiting parking spaces and manoeuvring within a confined space, represents another step en route to automated driving.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is on hand to help the driver.
The BMW Live Cockpit Professional in the new BMW X6 combines a new display and operating concept with unbeatable connectivity. It includes a high-resolution instrument cluster and a Control Display, both with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches. The new BMW X6 comes with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, an intelligent digital character who responds to the prompt “Hey BMW”. One unique feature over other digital assistants is that drivers can choose their own name for him. The arrival of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant ensures there is always a genuine BMW professional on board. He is able to explain all sorts of different functions, provide up-to-date information and assist the driver. The range of functions and skills available will be constantly expanded as part of regular updates, which can be carried out seamlessly on a smartphone and in‑car via Remote Software Upgrade.

Update of the technical data of all BMW series :

The values are already based on the test cycle according to the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to allow a comparison between vehicles.

The BMW X5 Special Edition and BMW X6 M Sport Edition both capture the imagination with their high-class equipment features. The two special-edition models will be available from December 2017.

The BMW X5 Special Edition brings together the M Sport package with Dakota leather trim, including heated seats for the driver and front passenger. The Alcantara/leather upholstery combination in Anthracite/Black and with M badging on the seat leather is available as an alternative at no extra cost. BMW Individual extended leather upholstery Merino in five colour variants can be specified as an option. Added to which, the BMW X5 Special Edition also comes with sun protection glass and the Multifunctional Instrument Display (not available for the BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance). All variants of the BMW X5 are available in Special Edition guise, with the exception of the BMW X5 M50d and limited to the German market. 

The Long Beach Blue metallic exterior paint shade and Carbon Fibre interior trim strips are the exclusive elements of the M Sport Edition package for the BMW X6. The Carbon Black and Mineral White metallic paint finishes are available as alternatives. The M Sport Edition also adds the equipment features of the M Sport package and 20-inch M light-alloy wheels (also exclusive) in double-spoke design with mixed-size runflat tyres. 21-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design with mixed-size runflat tyres can be ordered as an option for the special-edition model. All engine variants of the Sports Activity Coupe are available in M Sport Edition specification, with the exception of the BMW X6 M50d.

Munich. From the summer of 2017, greater diversity in the engine portfolio of the new BMW 5 Series, an extended range of standard equipment for many models as well as new functions and additional options in the areas of light technology, operation, comfort and connectivity will enhance the attractiveness of the BMW vehicle range. Starting in July, the Sedan and Touring models of the new BMW 5 Series will be available in a new entry-level variant featuring a four-cylinder petrol engine. Furthermore, there will be a choice of two additional diesel engines with four or six cylinders respectively.

The BMW 2 Series Tourer and the BMW X1 will be equipped with a further enhanced petrol engine with 3 cylinders. The extended range of standard equipment features will comprise, inter alia, further driver assistance systems and a multifunction instrument display for the BMW 7 Series and the ConnectedDrive navigation package for the BMW X5 and the BMW X6. All model variants of the BMW 3 Series Sedan and Touring will in future come with LED headlights and light alloy wheels as standard equipment. In keeping with their dynamic character, the most powerful diesel or petrol models will now be offered at least in the Sport Line equipment configuration.

As from July, the Control Display of the iDrive operating system will feature in many additional models a functional menu boasting a sophisticated tile arrangement with animated live graphics. Moreover, it will also be possible to use the central monitor as a touch screen if the vehicle is equipped with the navigation system Professional or with the option Navigation or Navigation Plus respectively. The functional range of the traffic situation display Real Time Traffic Information has also been further enhanced. The new hazard warning system is based on intelligent networking and car-to-car communication. The digital parking space search service On-Street Parking Information is now available in seven additional European cities.

Bucharest/ Munich. The toughest days of the Romanian winter this year: over 50 cm of snow in only 24 hours and temperatures of -20 °C and below. These were also some of the most spectacular moments for filming. The Stanislav Cociorva and Ecaterina Cernei creative couple, known as “neat.graphics” or simply Stanly & Katya, tackled these challenges, exploring the unique frozen landscapes of the Romanian mountains. The hero of the project was the BMW X6 M50d xDrive. It faced down the extreme winter conditions and snow covered mountain roads taking the team to the perfect shooting locations. The result is a stunning short movie about the wild, snow covered mountains of Romania.

“As we already had acquired experience filming Romania in the summer, we were tempted to make another movie in winter. Using the knowledge we had gained during our previous trips we chose locations which offered a rich diversity of natural landscapes and cultural landmarks”, explained Katya.

The project was filmed in 10 locations, and extended over 2 weeks covering a distance of 2500 km. It included high-altitude mountain roads winding their way up to 2000 m. Among them, the famous and wild “Transfăgărăşan” which Jeremy Clarkson called “the most beautiful road in the world”, now almost completely covered in snow. The remote mountain castles also feature spectacularly in the film. The (in)famous Dracula Castle, Bran, probably received the most elaborate shoot.

“The greatest challenge we faced during our trip was the weather. Specifically mountain hairpin turns covered with snow and ice. The BMW X 6 M50d is not only an epic presence in the film, but also got us to remote locations uncompromisingly and helped realise our project on time. Regardless of the extreme winter conditions and rough state of the mountain roads, we always managed to reach our destination”, continues Stanly.

About the BMW X6 M50d.

Since its launch, the BMW X6 M50d has been the most powerful three litre diesel in its segment. It delivers a maximum output of 280 kW/381 hp and a peak torque of 740 Newton metres. The key here is an innovative turbocharging system; two relatively small turbochargers and one large turbo dovetail precisely to deliver the amount of power required. The low moment of inertia of the small turbochargers is exploited to the full to deliver razor-sharp responses. The link-up with the large turbo is maximised to generate as much charge pressure as possible – just as the driving situation demands.

The BMW X6 M50d accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.2 seconds and boasts impressive power reserves for sporty mid-range sprints, even at higher speeds. At the same time, the average fuel consumption of the BMW M Performance Automobile has been reduced by 14 per cent and now stands at just 6.6 litres per 100 kilometres (42.8 mpg imp). CO2 emissions come in at 174 grams per kilometre. The BMW X6 M50d thus displays a genuine commitment to delivering impressive efficiency at this extremely high level of performance.

Munich. From the spring of 2017, the new BMW 5 Series, the sportiest and most innovative business sedan in its segment, will also set new standards in terms of efficiency. The new BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition impresses with a combined fuel consumption level of 4.3 to 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres (combined CO2 emission level: 114 – 102 g/km). Also, from March 2017, groundbreaking innovations in the areas of networking and operating, now being presented for the first time in the BMW 5 Series, will find their way into further model series – the digital parking space search service On-Street Parking Information and the live tile arrangement of the menu on the Control Display.

With a further extended range of driver assistance systems, the BMW 7 Series is making further advancements on the way to automated driving. The spectrum now also includes, amongst other things, the Lane Departure Assistant, ActiveAssist Collision Avoidance, Cross-Traffic and Wrong-Way Driving Alert as well as the Remote 3D View function. From the spring of 2017, BMW 6 Series models will underpin their exclusive and sporty aura with attractive innovations included in the range of special equipment options. The Digital Charging Service, an innovative feature for convenient and economical charging of the high-voltage battery, will become available exclusively for BMW i and BMW iPerformance automobiles. From March 2017, new and exceedingly high-quality options will be added to the range of special equipment for the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 4 Series as well as for the models BMW X5 and BMW X6.

BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition: greater driving pleasure, less CO2. 
As from March 2017, the driving pleasure that is characteristic of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will be combined with the lowest fuel consumption and emission levels in this vehicle segment. The new BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition is powered by a 2-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, delivering a maximum power output of 140 kW/190 hp and a peak torque of 400 Newton metres available between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. The Sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and achieves a combined fuel consumption of between 4.3 and 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emission levels of between 114 and 102 grams per kilometres (figures as per EU test cycle, depending on selected tyre size). The power unit of the BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition features, inter alia, a turbo charger mounted on anti-friction bearings, high pressure exhaust gas recirculation, a map-controlled oil pump and further developed Common Rail direct injection technology, the solenoid injectors of which ensure precise fuel dosing with a maximum pressure of 2,000 bar.

In addition to the optimised efficiency of both the engine and the standard 8-speed Steptronic transmission, enhanced aerodynamic characteristics as well as the Sedan’s greatly reduced weight vs. its predecessor also contribute towards achieving the favourable fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels. Moreover, in order to optimise emission behaviour, the BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition is equipped with BMW BluePerformance technology, which in addition to the particulate filter, an oxidation catalyst and a NOX storage catalyst, also features an SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue injection technology reducing nitrogen oxide emissions even further.

On-Street Parking Information in further BMW models and available for additional towns and cities.
Starting in March 2017, thanks to intelligent networking, drivers will be provided in a large number of BMW models not only with real-time information on the traffic situation, but will also receive assistance in finding a parking space in major urban areas. The BMW ConnectedDrive Service Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI), which is available in conjunction with the navigation system Professional, will also be complemented by the unique On-Street Parking Information function. Similar to the RTTI feature, this digital service uses intelligent networking to assess the availability of free road-side parking spaces from both pre-stored and current data. The calculated probability of finding a free parking space at the destination is displayed to the driver by means of coloured markings on the navigation map depicted on the Control Display.

In future, the On-Street Parking Information service will make finding a parking space far easier in as many as ten German cities. In addition to Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Stuttgart, the availability of parking spaces will also be analysed in real time in Nuremberg, Bremen and Hanover as from March 2017. The function, which is being featured for the first time in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, is now available for all current models with the exception of the BMW X1, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer.

Even more intuitive: Navigation system Professional with animated buttons arranged as tiles.
The latest innovations for the display and control concept, which made their debut in the new BMW 5 Series, will be available for further series as from March 2017. In conjunction with the navigation system Professional, the Control Display of the iDrive system will, thanks to a new enhanced graphic representation, facilitate even more intuitive operation in the BMW 7 Series and BMW 6 Series as well as in all variants of the BMW M6. The on-board monitor displays menus in the form of horizontally arranged buttons with a tile structure. These six buttons, the order of which can be individually configured by the driver, are displayed in the main menu on two sides of the screen. This ensures more convenient and faster access to the desired content. A new menu option is “Messages”, allowing access to incoming text messages and e-mails as well as information on the vehicle’s operating condition.

These functions, which are available using the menu selection, are symbolised by animated graphics in live mode. For example, in the overview and by means of a displayed map section, the navigation menu button already displays the route the vehicle is currently travelling on, whilst the entertainment menu graphics show the title of the song currently playing, including album cover, or the name of the selected radio station.

BMW 7 Series with additional driver assistance systems and Remote 3D View.
From the spring of 2017, there will be an even broader choice of driver assistance systems to ensure even greater driving pleasure, comfort and safety in 7 Series models. From March 2017, the systems will be included in the optional equipment package Driving Assistant Plus. They offer the driver effective assistance in many different situations, leading the way to automated driving. For example, the Steering and Lane Guidance Assistant being presented in the luxury sedans for the first time will be complemented by the Lane Change Assistant, which can be used when driving on motorways and other roads with separated directional carriageways. At speeds of between 70 and 180 km/h, the driver can initiate a lane change by holding the indicator lever in the one-touch position. The system sensors then analyse the situation on the neighbouring carriageway. If they detect that this lane is clear and there are no vehicles approaching at a high speed, the steering assistant conveniently helps the driver to change lanes.  

A further addition to the range of Driving Assistant Plus functions is the ActiveAssist Collision Avoidance system. Should a rapid lane change become necessary in order to avoid a suddenly appearing obstacle, it provides steering assistance at speeds of up to 160 km/h. The Cross Traffic Alert function, also included in the equipment package as from March, provides visual and acoustic signals if the traffic signs identified by the stereo camera should indicate that the driver has overlooked a road with right of way. The new Driving Assistant Plus features are complemented by the Wrong-Way Driving Alert feature. This system analyses navigation data in order to provide information on hazardous situations. It intervenes when the vehicle is driving in the wrong direction into one-way streets, roundabouts or motorway entrances.

In conjunction with the Surround View system, a feature that provides assistance with a combination of camera images taken from several different perspectives when the vehicle is manoeuvring in tricky situations, drivers of a BMW 7 Series will in future also have access to the Remote 3D View feature, the Surround View system of which provides them with permanent access to a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its surroundings, this being transmitted to their smartphone via the BMW Connected feature.

New option for the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 4 Series: Multifunctional instrument display.
From March 2017, a novel feature in the field of display technology will also ensure an even more intensive driving experience in BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series models, for which the multifunctional instrument display will be optionally available. The fully digital TFT colour display featuring black panel technology for the cockpit provides driving-related information in an individually selectable design. The colour scheme, graphic representation and choice of contents vary according to the driving mode selected via the Driving Experience Control button.

In COMFORT mode, the display shows a conventional image of the four round instruments using the corresponding graphics. A zoom function highlights the respective driving speed and engine speed. In ECO PRO mode, additional information on current fuel efficiency replaces the rev counter. In SPORT mode, the current speed is displayed digitally in the form of a large central figure, whilst the selected gear is indicated in the centre of the rev counter.

BMW 6 Series with distinctive accents for the exterior and interior.
From the spring of 2017, new and attractive special equipment features will also be available for the BMW 6 Series. These options, which are on offer exclusively for the BMW 6 Series Coupe, the BMW 6 Series Convertible and the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, underscore the sporting character of the three luxury class models. The choice of body colours will be complemented by the brand-new variant Sonic Speed Blue metallic. In conjunction with the M Sports package, new 20-inch, M bicolour light alloy wheels boasting an M-specific double spoke design will be available, including mixed tyres and emergency running characteristics as well as interior trims in a carbon fibre look.

Comfortable, eco-friendly, cost efficient: Digital Charging Service for BMW i and BMW iPerformance automobiles.
The BMW i brand has become a pioneer in the field of sustainable individual mobility, not only thanks to groundbreaking vehicle concepts and drive technologies, but also with numerous innovative services. The latest innovation in this area is the Digital Charging Service for intelligent charging of the high-voltage battery featured in BMW i and BMW iPerformance automobiles. So the BMW Group is the first carmaker to offer a system that conveniently helps the driver to make use of favourable electricity tariffs or a high proportion of self-generated solar energy during the charging process.

In order to achieve best possible charging cost efficiency, the BMW Digital Charging Service takes into account not only tariffs with a dynamically varying price in the daytime, but also those that include predetermined highest and lowest prices. As a result, it is possible, for example, to take maximum advantage of particularly favourable overnight rates.

In conjunction with the new BMW i Wallbox Connect, the Digital Charging Service can also optimise the use of electricity from a domestic photovoltaic system. In this case, the amount of locally generated solar electricity is predicted based on the system’s performance data and the current weather forecast. Using this data, it is also possible to determine the proportion of solar electricity that is not consumed in the home at the time of being produced and can, therefore, be used for completely emission-free mobility. As a result, fully electric and/or hybrid vehicles are integrated as best possible into the domestic environment and the customer’s individual energy concept.

The BMW Digital Charging Service automatically schedules the start and finish of each charging process with a view to best possible cost efficiency or maximum proportion of green electricity respectively. In the process, the charging schedule always ensures that the vehicle has the maximum battery capacity at the desired departure time and that the interior is also fully air-conditioned. The unique service is an integral part of BMW ConnectedDrive Services available for all BMW i and BMW iPerformance automobiles.

New light alloy wheels for the BMW X5 and the BMW X6.
In the spring of 2017, the range of optional equipment available ex factory for the models BMW X5 and BMW X6 will also include for the

first time 21-inch light alloy wheels previously only available exclusively from the Original BMW Accessory range. The M light alloy wheels boasting a double spoke design and bicolour look with burnished spokes come with mixed tyres with emergency running characteristics. They are available in conjunction with the M Sports Package for all model variants with the exception of the BMW X5 sDrive25d, BMW X5 xDrive25d and the BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance.

BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M now with the navigation package ConnectedDrive as standard.
As from the spring of 2017, the range of standard equipment for the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M will be supplemented by the navigation package ConnectedDrive, also featuring telephony with wireless charging. It includes among other options the navigation system Professional, a smartphone holder with which inductive charging of a mobile phone is possible, the RTTI service including On-Street Parking Information, a WiFi hotspot, ConnectedDrive Services, Concierge Services and Remote Services.

Extensively updated engine line-up for the BMW 4 Series model range – Further model variants with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive available for the new BMW 7 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer –Additional equipment options for the BMW 6 Series and BMW 7 Series – BMW X6 now fitted as standard with a rear view camera.

Munich. An all-new selection of petrol engines and an additional latest-generation diesel unit are set to enhance both the sportiness and efficiency of the BMW 4 Series models in spring 2016. The BMW 325d Sedan and BMW 325d Touring will also be available with a new four-cylinder diesel engine from March 2016. And additional variants of the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer and new BMW 7 Series equipped with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive will also be added to the brand’s model portfolio.

New additions will also be made to the standard and optional equipment of numerous models in spring 2016. For example, the new Open Air package, which will be offered for the BMW 2 Series Convertible, BMW 4 Series Convertible and BMW M4 Convertible, provides extra driving pleasure with the roof down. The globally unique Remote Control Parking option is now available for all variants of the new BMW 7 Series model range. And the luxury sedan can also be specified with additional exterior paint finishes, upholstery colours and BMW Individual interior trim strips. Elsewhere in the model portfolio, the ConnectedDrive navigation package fitted as standard on the BMW 6 Series will include a new menu display for the iDrive operating system from March 2016, as well as the telephony with wireless charging and wi-fi hotspot functions. These new features will be written into the options list for the BMW X3 and BMW X4 from April 2016. Customers will be able to order an Advantage variant of these models as an alternative to standard specification. From April 2016 the standard equipment of the BMW X6. BMW X5M and BMW X6M will also include a rear view camera. And the BMW X5 and BMW X6 will now feature Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors in the front and rear apron as standard.

BMW, one of the world’s most successful premium carmakers, also boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment it first entered 30 years ago. Around one in three BMW cars sold around the world is now equipped with the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system. BMW’s success in this segment has been driven not only by the ever-popular BMW X models but also by all-wheel-drive models based on the other model series, from the BMW 1 Series to the BMW 7 Series. Across these model series, a large choice of AWD models is offered in a wide range of engine versions. At the same time, BMW continues to refine this technology and take it in new directions. By offering BMW xDrive in combination with a hybrid drive and with a front-wheel-drive platform, the company has repeatedly demonstrated its proficiency in the all-wheel-drive field, proficiency that will secure BMW’s position at the forefront of this sector well into the future. Today, BMW offers more than 110 models – of either transmission type – with BMW xDrive in 12 different model series, as well as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car and the compact BMW 225xe with electrified all-wheel drive.

The focus from day one: traction and dynamics.
BMW’s first foray into the all-wheel-drive market came with the unveiling of the BMW 325i “Allrad” at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in 1985. From the outside, the newcomer didn’t immediately reveal its inner qualities, so its performance when the journalists took it out on the test track was even more of an eye-opener. This very first BMW all-wheel-drive system not only improved traction away from surfaced roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also made for more dynamic handling through corners. “The new BMW is the new champion when it comes to handling,” was the verdict of the testers from German car magazine Auto Zeitung not long after the first unveiling.

Today, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system takes typical BMW driving dynamics to new levels. The current generation of this system is controlled by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM) system, which ensures that xDrive always responds appropriately at the earliest possible moment, based on reliable sensing and monitoring of the current driving situation. The interventions may be performed either entirely by BMW xDrive, or by xDrive in combination with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Performance Control (DPC). The resulting fast and precise control of drive power distribution ensures typical BMW handling characteristics even under extremely dynamic cornering.

The all-wheel-drive system is biased towards the typical BMW rear-wheel-drive characteristics. That is to say, on the all-wheel-drive models a greater share of the drive power is sent to the rear wheels, even under normal driving conditions. This maintains the typical BMW precise steering response, with virtually no torque steer. For crisp turn-in and high tracking stability, the latest-generation BMW xDrive system starts increasing the amount of power sent to the rear wheels as soon as the vehicle enters a corner, further enhancing the driving pleasure for which BMW is a byword.

BMW all-wheel-drive technology: continuous evolution since 1985.
The full-time all-wheel-drive system featured on the BMW 325i “Allrad” of 1985 split the drive power in a ratio of 37 to 63 per cent between the front and rear wheels. In response to wheel speed differences, visco locks in the transfer case and rear differential were capable of providing a virtually rigid connection between the front and rear wheels, in order to improve traction and stability. This model’s name was soon changed to BMW 325iX, and from 1988 it was offered in a “touring” version as well (lower-case spelling up to and including the E46 series).

1991: BMW 525iX.
Three years on, BMW introduced an all-wheel-drive model in the BMW 5 Series too. For the first time, the power split was now electronically controlled. The newly developed system featured multi-plate clutches that allowed the default 36:64 front-to-rear power split to be varied seamlessly and automatically in line with driving conditions. Initially a hydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch was used at the rear axle, but this was later replaced by electronically controlled selective braking intervention. The system monitored the driving situation using wheel speed signals from the Anti-lock Braking System, supplemented by further information about brake status, engine speed and throttle valve position.

From the outset the all-wheel-drive system of the BMW 525iX was a class apart. The electronic control system delivered a very fast and precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered in both Sedan and touring versions.

1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.
In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of 38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X (Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle challenging conditions off the beaten track.

In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept, there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series.

2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.
Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only premium model in its class for years to come.

The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.

In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.

2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid drive.
With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile, in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the all-wheel-drive market.

2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.

BMW xDrive also available for other model series.
The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision, BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7 Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6 Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5 Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe models of the new BMW 4 Series.

Driving progress ever forward.
BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new front-wheel-drive format.

With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system. This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the front wheels.

Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.
BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.
In September 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This high-end BMW luxury model pioneers groundbreaking innovations on all fronts, and will be available with BMW xDrive from its market launch in October. The new luxury sedan will also be the first model to allow intelligent all-wheel-drive to be combined with Integral Active Steering – that is to say with passively steering rear wheels.

Sporting accents for the exterior.
The Aerodynamics Package lends the BMW X6 an instantly more sporting and masculine appearance. The new BMW M Performance Parts also include a host of attractive and sporting details for the interior of the BMW X6. The LED door sill plates in brushed stainless steel look with illuminated BMW M Performance lettering grab the attention the moment you open the front doors. Battery power means they are extremely easy to retrofit, with no need for laying cables. The BMW M Performance carbon interior trim strips mark out the interior clearly from the standard car’s and, like the Steptronic sport transmission’s carbon gearshift lever with BMW M logo, add a sporty and exclusive accent to the cockpit.

BMW X6 gets a performance boost.
In keeping with the overtly sporty design of the BMW X6, the new range of BMW M Performance Parts also includes two performance-boosting Power Kits. The Power Kit for the BMW X6 xDrive30d (fuel consumption combined: 6.0 l/100 km [47.1 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 159–157 g/km)* ramps up the car’s output and torque from 190 kW (258 hp) and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) to 204 kW (277 hp) and 585 Nm (431 lb-ft), and shaves 0.2 seconds off the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time set by the standard model. The key modifications here include a new control unit with revised engine data and additional hardware components, such as an upgraded intercooler. The Power Kit also comes with larger 18-inch front brake discs, which deliver improved stopping power. The Power Kit for the BMW X6 xDrive35i (fuel consumption combined: 8.6–8.5 l/100 km [32.9–33.2 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 200–198 g/km)* raises output and torque from 225 kW (306 hp) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) to 240 kW (326 hp) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft), improving 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration by as much as 0.5 seconds over the standard model. The increase in power is accompanied by a sportier accelerator set-up delivering faster responses, along with an optimised engine and exhaust soundtrack. Remarkably, both Power Kits give the X6 the same low fuel consumption and emissions in the ECE driving cycle as on the standard-spec version, despite the increases in performance.

The BMW M Performance sport brake retrofit kit enables even sportier braking performance. Larger, inner-vented 19-inch BMW M Performance lightweight brake discs increase the heat resistance and therefore the effectiveness of the brakes under extreme conditions. The blue painted brake callipers, with imprinted BMW M logo at the front, are showcased particularly effectively by open wheel rim designs, giving them clear sporting prowess in terms of style as well as function.

Take a closer look with the BMW M Performance Drive Analyser.
The BMW M Performance Drive Analyser allows owners to examine their driving style with impressive precision. Whether the owner is pursuing lap times on the race track or simply driving from A to B on the road, this new tool records driving dynamic data with professional efficiency. The BMW M Performance Drive Analyser consists of an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) stick, which is plugged into the relevant socket in the car, as well as software in the form of an app for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. The connection between the car and OBD stick is via Bluetooth. The car’s Click & Drive holder, meanwhile, enables easy attachment of the smartphone to the windscreen. All the measurements, such as a range of engine data, the car’s speed and peak values, the gear currently engaged, accelerator and brake usage and even lateral acceleration, are stored straight onto the smartphone/tablet and can be accessed at any time. The driver can study the results directly on their smartphone after every journey.

The exclusive BMW X6 M Design Edition boasts particularly sporty and visually striking elements both inside and out. The upgraded interior of the BMW X6 M Design Edition comes with full Merino leather, including a bicolour instrument panel in Black/Mugello Red with Mugello Red contrast stitching. Another beguiling feature fitted exclusively in the BMW X6 M Design Edition is the BMW Individual interior trim in Piano Black with an edition-specific badge. From the outside, the BMW X6 M Design Edition stands apart with its 21-inch M Performance light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design and carbon elements. Striking accentuations at the front and rear, adaptive LED headlamps as a new option.

Precisely modified details in the front view give the new BMW X6 an appearance characterised by exclusive athleticism and supremacy. The standard fog lights are now set in matt finish surrounds in the upper area of the outer air inlets. Their higher and more lateral position emphasises the width of the vehicle. The striking three-dimensional modelling of the frame and newly designed bars, angled in the lower section, make the BMW kidney grille stand out especially conspicuously within the vehicle front section. The angle of the grille bars is flush with the bottom of the headlamp units, thereby creating an additional horizontal line which likewise highlights the wide track and stable road-holding of the new BMW X6.

As an alternative to the standard bi-xenon light, the new BMW X6 is the first vehicle in its segment to be fitted optionally with adaptive LED headlamps. Their bright white light ensures optimum visibility, while their high-quality appearance represents a new interpretation of the brand's hallmark twin circular headlamps. The three-dimensionally shaped luminous rings of the adaptive LED headlamps are strikingly levelled off both at the top and bottom and are overlaid at the upper edge by an LED-fed accent light. The light sources for low and high beam light are LED units positioned on a horizontal bar at its centre, feeding their light into the reflectors in front. In the new BMW X6 M, adaptive LED headlights are fitted as standard.

With its newly designed rear lights with LED technology, the powerfully shaped rear section of the new BMW X6 also features more intense styling. The rear lights are now two LED-fed light banks which create the brand's hallmark night design as a harmoniously glowing light mass. The fact that they are horizontally aligned and stretch far out to the sides emphasises both the width of the vehicle and the flowing transition between the side section and rear.

Attractive supplements to the program of external paint finishes, light alloy wheel and leather trim.

The program of external paint finishes for the new BMW X6 consists of two non-metallic and eight metallic colours, including Marrakech Brown metallic, Orion Silver metallic and Midnight Blue metallic. The standard equipment range of the new BMW X6 also includes 19-inch light alloy wheels. In the 8-cylinder model BMW X6 xDrive 50i these now feature a new double spoke design in bi-colour. The selection of light alloy wheels available as an option is supplemented with a 20-inch version in Y-spoke, bi-colour design. An optional feature for the BMW X6 is an engine compartment lid with strikingly shaped powerdome which additionally highlights the powerful appearance of the Sports Activity Coupé (not available in Germany).

The standard leather trim Nevada is now also available in the colour Vermilion Red. The exclusive nappa leather option with extended features now includes a choice between the colours Black and Ebony White. The new BMW X6 is offered as standard as a four-seater model. A three-seater rear bench is optionally available. The luggage compartment volume of the Sports Activity Coupé is 570 litres and can be extended to up to 1,450 litres by folding down the rear backrests.

As an additional option, the M Sport Edition is offered for the new BMW X6 in Germany. This attractive equipment package includes 20-inch M light alloy wheels in double spoke design and bi-colour finish with mixed tyres, adaptive LED headlamps, BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line, black surrounds for the fog lights and M door sill cover strips. The striking accentuations for the exterior are supplemented with a sporty interior ambience. Features here include the sports seats with electrical adjustment and memory function, M-specific Alcantara/Nappa leather combination in black with M-style welt and contrast stitching, M leather steering wheel with shift paddles, M driver footrest, stainless steel pedals, interior strips in Aluminium Flywheel black and the BMW Individual roof liner in anthracite.

With the market launch of the new BMW X6, the combination of supreme appearance, agile driving properties and hallmark brand efficiency so characteristic of the Sports Activity Coupé is raised to a new level. The petrol and diesel engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology available for the BMW X6 deliver impressive pulling power and exemplary low fuel consumption figures. The V8 engine of the BMW X6 xDrive50i delivers 300 kW/407 bhp, while in the BMW X6 xDrive35i an in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine with 225 kW/306 bhp ensures supreme athletic performance. Both offer not only impressively sporty power delivery but also emission figures based on the EU test cycle of 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres for the BMW X6 xDrive40d and 7.4 litres for the BMW X6 xDrive30d.

For further reduction of nitrogen oxide (NOx) in the exhaust gas, the BMW X6 xDrive30d can also be fitted with optional BMW BluePerformance Technology as of spring 2012. Here, in addition to the standard components of diesel particulate filter and oxidation catalytic converter, the AdBlue system is used, with urea injection and an NOX catalyst storage which eliminates sulphur dioxide as well as nitrogen oxides. This means that the vehicle already meets the requirements for the EU6 emission standard which comes into effect from 2014.

An additional model version based on the new BMW X6 also lines up for the start at the same as the market launch of the latter. The BMW M Performance Automobile BMW X6 M50d sets a new benchmark for pulling power and efficiency with a newly developed 280 kW/381 bhp in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine. Its unique triple turbocharging gives the world's most powerful standard in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine a thrust which sets in early on and is maintained right through to the high engine speed range. Its maximum torque is 740 Newton metres. One of the factors contributing to its exceptional efficiency - especially in relation to its output - is the new version of the common rail direct injection, whose piezo injectors apply a maximum pressure of 2,200 bar. With an acceleration rate of 5.3 seconds for the sprint from zero to 100 km/h, the BMW X6 M50d even outdoes 8-cylinder models, while its average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is still only 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres. Its drivetrain, suspension technology and aerodynamic properties have been harmonised with the precision so characteristic of M.

As an additional product offer from BMW M GmbH, the specialists for high-performance sports cars, the BMW X6M with its V8 engine delivering 408 kW/555 bhp also benefits from detailed refinements in the area of design and equipment. The BMW X6 M is fitted with a 6-speed M Sport automatic transmission, also highlighting its individual status with such features as separately developed suspension technology.

In all other models, engine power is transferred by means of a standard 8-speed sports transmission including shift paddles at the steering wheel. Dynamic Performance Control is a standard feature in all versions of the BMW X6 as an element of the intelligent all-wheel drive system xDrive. This gives greater precision to the electronically controlled power distribution so as to optimise driving stability, traction and dynamic performance. It particularly comes to bear when taking bends in sporty style. Even as the car enters the bend, xDrive feeds additional power to the rear wheels so as to support an agile turn-in response. By means of continuously variable distribution of drive torque between the rear wheels, Dynamic Performance Control also optimises tracking stability under high transverse acceleration forces as well as traction when accelerating out of a bend. For additional enhancement of agility and supremacy, the systems Active Steering (not available for the BMW X6 M50d and the BMW X6 M) and Adaptive Drive (as standard in the BMW X6 M50d and the BMW X6 M) are offered with electronically controlled dampers and roll stabilisation.

The progressive character of the new BMW X6 is also underscored by the extensive range of driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive. In addition to BMW Head-Up-Display, features available for the Sports Activity Coupé include the systems Lane Departure Warning (not for the BMW X6 M50d and the BMW X6 M), Speed Limit Info, Side View and Rear View camera with Top View. The new BMW X6 is also optimised by means of intelligent networking with the integration of smartphones and music players in the vehicle and the use of innovative infotainment functions.

Appealing refinements in the exterior and interior design of both models will be possible due to the enhanced range of options offered by the BMW Individual programme. In addition, both the Sports Activity Vehicle and the Sports Activity Coupe will be available as Exclusive Edition models, offering customers an exclusive choice of unique options and materials enabling them to configure their BMW with an unmistakable personal touch. Also in the autumn of 2011, both the BMW X5 and BMW X6 will be available as Exclusive Edition models for the first time. These models feature the unmistakable combination of sport and luxury that is reflected in the premium character of the design, technology and features that intensify the unique driving experience of the BMW X Series. The distinctive look of the BMW X5 and BMW X6 Exclusive Edition is immediately apparent in the exterior finishes Platinum Bronze Metallic (BMW X5) and Mineral Silver Metallic (BMW X6), plus the front door sill finishers featuring the BMW Edition designation and the rear sills bearing the BMW lettering on the BMW X5. The exclusive ambience of the interior is further enhanced with the BMW Individual headliner in Anthracite, the fine wood trim in dark Bamboo grain, plus black floor mats with oyster-coloured edging. The optimized emission technology does not impact the performance of the BMW X5 xDrive30d, and its average fuel consumption is a respectable 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres (CO2 emission: 198 g/km).

Superior handling, commanding traction and characteristic styling are key contributors to the stand-out position the BMW X5 and BMW X6 models enjoy among the premium all-wheel-drive vehicles of their segment. Spring 2011 sees the introduction of specific additions to the range of special options to ratchet up the appeal even further. Among other features, new 20-inch light-alloy wheel rims are available for both models, while the choice of BMW ConnectedDrive technology has been augmented by the innovative BMW Apps feature. Meanwhile, a three-seater rear seat option making its debut in April 2011 adds greater flexibility to the usage of the interior of the BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupé, which started out as a four-seater model.

The new rear-seat variant is available for all BMW X6 models with the exception of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, and can also be ordered for the BMW X6 M. The extra seat replaces the storage unit in the rear centre of the four-seater model. The five-seater Sports Activity Coupé is also optionally available in Nevada and Exclusive Nappa leather as well as BMW Individual Merino leather, encompassing the entire colour range. Another novelty is the operation of the standard eight-speed Sport automatic transmission. In future, the BMW X6 will feature shift paddles on the steering wheel whose operating logic follows the principle familiar from BMW M cars: for manual shifting of the eight-speed Sport automatic transmission, the right paddle is used for upshifts and the left for downshifts.

For the BMW X5 and BMW X6 alike, the choice of alloy wheels has been extended by a further option that positively enhances both the car’s dynamic cornering behaviour and its appearance. The 20-inch wheels in Y-spoke design and with a Black high gloss finish are combined with mixed tyres measuring 275/40 R 20 at the front and 315/35 R 20 at the rear. From spring 2011, Comfort Access – likewise available for both models – will include vicinity lighting integrated in the exterior door handles. In addition to automatic unlocking and activation of the ignition, this feature provides effective illumination of the car’s surroundings as soon as the electronic control of Comfort Access has recognised the car key carried by the driver.

Following directly on from the market launch, the extended range of BMW ConnectedDrive services also becomes available for the BMW X5 and the BMW X6. In future both models will be able to avail themselves of the BMW Apps special option. This feature enables owners of an Apple iPhone to stay in touch with the online services Facebook and Twitter while in the car, as well as receive radio stations from all over the world, irrespective of the car’s location, thanks to a web radio function. In addition to the current BMW ConnectedDrive application, customers will have a range of functions and apps available for free download at the Apple App Store.

With these latest innovations, BMW is systematically pursuing its ongoing product optimisation for these two models built at its US plant in Spartanburg. Most recently, last year’s market launch of the new BMW X5 and the comprehensive upgrading of the BMW X6’s drive technology gave a further boost to BMW’s success in this competitive environment. As well as the continued rise in BMW X5 sales in 2010, global growth in demand for the BMW X6 is also feeding the exceptional market success of the BMW X models. In just three years, more than 110,000 units of these Sports Activity Coupés have already been sold, 46,404 of them in 2010 alone. The BMW X5 posted worldwide sales of 102,178 units in the last business year.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is the world’s first Sports Activity Coupé
with full hybrid drive offering a driving experience quite unique both in
the segment of BMW X models and in the hybrid segment as a whole. Through its combination of a V8 gasoline engine and electric drive,
the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 offers a significant increase in dynamic performance together with a reduction of fuel consumption and emissions by approximately 20 per cent. This joint enhancement of driving pleasure and efficiency clearly proves that the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is a typical BMW in the hybrid segment.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology offers the driver three significant options: to drive under electric power alone, to use the power of the combustion engine, or to benefit form the combination of both drive modes. Driving completely free of CO2 in the electric mode is possible up to a speed of 60 km/h or 37 mph. The combustion engine then cuts in as required
(as a function of load conditions) and is automatically switched off when driving in overrun at a speed of less than 65 km/h or 40 mph.

The drive system featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 consists of a 300 kW/407 hp V8 power unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and two electric motors developing 67 kW/91 hp and, respectively, 63 kW/86 hp. Maximum system output is 357 kW/485 hp, peak torque is 780 Newton-metres/575 lb-ft. This makes the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 the most powerful hybrid vehicle in the world.

Through its unique balance of performance and fuel economy the
BMW ActiveHybrid X6 sets new standards both in the hybrid vehicle segment and in the overall market of BMW X models. Acceleration from
a standstill to 100 km/h comes in 5.6 seconds. Average fuel consumption in the EU5 test cycle is 9.9 litres/100 km (equivalent to 28.5 mpg imp),
the CO2 emission rating is 231 grams/kilometre.

Integration of the two electric motors in the two-mode active transmission of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 allows two self-sufficient modes of operation. One mode is for setting off in particularly dynamic style and for driving at low speeds, the second is for driving at a higher speeds under optimum conditions. This ensures all the benefits of BMW ActiveHybrid technology, with maximum efficiency under all loads and at all speeds. At the same time the seven-speed automatic transmission provided by the electric motors together with three planetary gearsets and four multiple-plate clutches ensures all the supreme driving behaviour, smoothness and performance so typical of BMW.

When applying the brakes or taking back the gas pedal kinetic energy
is converted into electrical energy and stored in the high-performance battery. To provide this benefit either one or both electric motors act as
a generator, depending on driving conditions. The recuperation efficiency and output achieved by the system is 25 times greater than with Brake Energy Regeneration featured so far in BMW’s production models.
 

Electrical energy is stored in an NiMH high-performance battery with
a capacity of 2.4 kWh. The temperature of the high-voltage battery is controlled as required and with maximum efficiency by liquid cooling interacting with the air conditioning and an external heat exchanger.

The central electronic control unit ensures appropriate interaction
of the combustion engine and electric drive crucial to the outstanding efficiency and unique qualities of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. It converts high-voltage direct current from the high-performance battery into
three-phase alternating current for the two electric motors in the hybrid transmission. It also coordinates all functions of the hybrid system including the distribution of torque and power between the combustion engine and the electric motors as well as the selection of gears.

Over and above the electric motors, the high-performance battery
also supplies electrical energy to the power-consuming items linked to
the 12-volt on-board network. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is equipped with electromechanical power steering and an electrical climate compressor both remaining fully functional also when the combustion engine is switched off and enhancing the overall efficiency of the vehicle to an even higher standard through their on-demand consumption and uptake of energy.

While braking the generator builds up stopping forces in the electric motors acting efficiently on all four wheels and precisely coordinated
with the hydraulic brake effect in accordance with the driver’s stopping and deceleration requirements. This provides not only optimum stopping power, but also the brake feeling so typical of BMW under all driving conditions including the all-electric mode. A further point is that like the BMW X6, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes with Dynamic Stability
control incorporating an enhanced range of functions such as Dry Braking and Fading Compensation as well as an electromechanical and hydraulic parking brake complete with an Auto-Hold function.

In its driving behaviour and motoring comfort, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 offers all the standards provided by BMW’s latest X models, without
the slightest difference between the electrical and the combustion drive mode. Intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology with permanent, variable power distribution front-to-rear enhances the unique driving dynamics of the vehicle to an even higher standard.

The current operating mode and function of the drive system is clearly presented by appropriate displays in the instrument cluster and in the Control Display itself. The charge level of the high-performance battery
at the disposal of the driver and the current operating mode are shown
by appropriate gauges beneath the rev counter. Being informed of the power uptake when driving in the electric mode, the driver may if he
wish maintain that mode longer in the interest of extra efficiency. And if
he wishes the driver may also call up information on the current flow of energy in the Control Display.

The particularly prominent Powerdome on the engine lid gives the
BMW ActiveHybrid X6 a very distinctive look versus the “regular”
BMW X6 as a significant visual highlight. “ActiveHybrid” model designations on the tailgate trim bar and on the front doors, the designation “BMW ActiveHybrid” on the door entry covers on either
side, 19-inch light-alloy wheels (or, as an option, 20-inch light-alloy
wheels in aerodynamically optimised Streamline design), as well
as exterior paintwork in exclusive Bluewater metallic for the first time
on a BMW X6 serve furthermore to highlight the particular character
of this unique car.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 combines innovative drive technology with
the unique concept of a Sports Activity Coupé. The very progressive
and exclusive character of this outstanding vehicle is further underlined
by a particularly wide range of standard features as well as attractive options. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes as standard with features
such as comfort seats, automatic air conditioning, cruise control, the
BMW Professional navigation system and Park Distance Control.

The result is even greater Sheer Driving Pleasure combined with enhanced fuel economy and CO2 management providing the kind of progress to make the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 a typical BMW in the hybrid market.

The overall drive system featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 consists of a 300 kW/407 hpV8 gasoline engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and two electric synchronous motors delivering 67 kW/91 hp and, respectively, 63 kW/86 hp. Maximum system output is 357 kW/485 hp, peak torque is 780 Newton-metres/575 lb-ft.

Precisely controlled interaction of the three power units optimises the
overall efficiency of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 at all speeds, with
acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. Top speed of
the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is limited electronically to 236 km/h or 146 mph (250 km/h or 155 mph with the optional Sports Package, with average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 9.9 litres/100 km (equal to 28.5 mpg imp) and a CO2 emission rating of 231 grams per kilometre.

BMW’s first full hybrid model is able to run exclusively on electric power
– and that is entirely free of CO2 – up to a speed of 60 km/h or 37 mph, with
the combustion engine being activated automatically whenever required.

Ideal variation of the two drive modes for enhanced efficiency and
dynamism is ensured by The two-mode active transmission provides the
ideal combination of the two power modes for enhanced efficiency and dynamic performance at all times. With the two electric motors, three planetary gearsets and four multiple-plate clutches, drive power is transmitted through a seven-gear automatic transmission operated by the driver of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 via an electronic gear selector lever and, respectively, shift paddles on the steering wheel.

BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system spreads out engine power variably between the front and rear wheels.

The electric motors receive their energy from an NiMH high-performance battery positioned beneath the floor of the luggage compartment and
feeding electric power also to the car’s on-board network. Luggage compartment capacity is therefore the same as on the “regular” BMW X6
with its combustion engine. When applying the brakes or taking back the
gas pedal kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy and is stored in the high-performance battery. To provide this function either one or both of the electric motors acts as a generator, feeding electric power generated without the slightest increase in fuel consumption directly into the high-voltage battery. Subsequent use of this energy to provide extra drive power

significantly reduces the consumption of fuel.

Now the introduction of this innovative technology in such an exceptional vehicle concept adds a particularly fascinating motoring experience through the efficiency achieved in this way. Unique efficiency ensured by two-mode active transmission.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology has been developed specifically for use in a particularly dynamic vehicle in this segment and for a broad range of practical use going far beyond city traffic as such. The big advantage, therefore, is the overall optimisation of drivetrain efficiency in all speed ranges and under all conditions.

The two-mode active transmission is based on an ECVT (electric continuously variable transmission) operating in two separate modes. One mode is for setting off with particular power and for driving at low speeds, the second is for motoring at high speeds.

When setting off only one of the two electric motors is activated. Then,
as soon as the driver requires more power, the second electric motor automatically activates the combustion engine and subsequently serves
as a generator providing a permanent supply of electric power.

When driving steadily at a higher speed most of the power required is delivered by the combustion engine in a largely mechanical process. Here again, one of the two electric motors acts as a generator.

Together with the mechanical components, the electric motors form a joint transmission unit providing the optimum transmission ratio at all times as a function of driving conditions. The mechanical link within the two-mode
active transmission is provided by three planetary gearsets in a configuration dividing the drive power generated by the combustion engine and the two electric motors into two transmission modes and therefore ensuring a degree of variability in combining the two power sources conventional hybrid drive would not be able to provide.

The two operating modes of the electric motors are supplemented and enhanced by fixed transmission ratios providing a total of seven gears for full use of the highly efficient hybrid function throughout the vehicle’s complete range of operation and at the same time maintaining the driving performance so typical of BMW.

Conventional but unique all in one: V8 gasoline engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and High Precision Injection.

The combustion engine is a technically unique eight-cylinder featured for
the first time in the BMW X6 xDrive50i. The world’s first V8 gasoline engine with two turbochargers in the V-section between the two rows of cylinders excels in particular through its smooth development of power setting in
from the start and continuing in an ongoing surge throughout the entire speed range. The exceptionally spontaneous and direct response of this V8 with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology results directly from the compact configuration of the engine allowing short manifolds as well as large cross-sections on the intake and exhaust side.

Displacing 4.4 litres, this outstanding eight-cylinder delivers maximum output of 300 kW/407 hp consistently maintained between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm. Superior torque of 600 Newton-metres/442 lb-ft is maintained all the way from 1,750 to 4 ,500 rpm, with High Precision Injection ensuring precise supply of fuel at all times.

Piezo-injectors positioned in the middle between the valves ensure a
smooth, efficient and clean combustion process, the V8 naturally fulfilling both the European EU5 standard as well as the ULEV II limits in the USA.

Compared with the power unit featured in the BMW X6 xDrive50i, this
new engine has been modified in numerous respects to the specific requirements of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. The first point is that there is
no starter, no alternator and belt drive for the climate compressor and hydraulic pump on the power steering. The main and low-temperature circuits in the cooling system have been modified for all-electric operation,
the low-temperature circuit already serving to cool the charge air in the combustion engine being used additionally to cool the power electronics.

A specifically designed hybrid engine cover, finally, marks a clear difference versus the power unit in the BMW X6 xDrive50i.

Electric motors for enhanced performance on no extra fuel.

When accelerating the eight-cylinder power unit of the
BMW ActiveHybrid X6, joining forces with the electric motors, ensures optimum efficiency and dynamic performance. As soon as the driver
requires more power the two electric motors fed by the high-voltage energy battery supply additional torque for enhanced performance. This boost
effect significantly increases the overall output of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, without any increase in fuel consumption.

While the two electric motors have almost the same output, they have
been modified in their performance characteristics to meet individual requirements. The power delivered is 67 kW/91 hp and. respectively, 63 kW/86 hp, with peak torque of 260 Newton-metres/192 lb-ft and 280 Newton-metres/206 lb-ft.

The electric motors support the combustion engine effectively throughout the entire speed range, the additional electrically generated drive power serving to reduce the power output required on the combustion engine when driving steadily at a higher speed. This shift in load is perfectly controlled
at all times to give the overall system enhanced efficiency and its maximum effect under practical driving conditions.

The electronic control unit is also able to provide a consistent, ongoing
surge of power, maximum power being generated when shifting gears through the so-called response boost effect. When kicking down the accelerator for maximum acceleration, the control unit generates stationary boost right from the start in the initial downshift phase, interaction of response boost and stationary boost ensuring a very spontaneous and direct response to every movement of the gas pedal.

Maximum system output is 357 kW/485 hp, with peak torque of 780 Newton-metres/575 lb-ft. This makes the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 the most powerful hybrid vehicle in the world, with acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds and top speed is limited electronically to 236 km/h or 146 mph (or, respectively, 250 km/h or 155 mph with the optional Sports Package).

The unique positon of BMW ActiveHybrid X6 within the BMW X segment
as a whole follows very clearly and convincingly from the comparison of these performance figures, on the one hand, with the vehicle’s fuel consumption
and emission ratings, on the other. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 combines its supreme dynamism with equally fascinating efficiency, with fuel average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of just 9.9 ltr/100 km (equal to 28.5 mpg imp) and a CO2 rating of 231 grams per kilometre.

All-electrical driving mode reducing emissions to zero.

With its combination of two-mode active transmission and high-performance battery, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is able to run on its electric motors alone. This makes it a zero emission vehicle under such conditions, fulfilling even the strictest requirements foreseen for the future and ensuring the highest conceivable level of mobility.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 may run on electric power alone regardless of the ambient temperature, minimum operating temperatures being required only for the engine coolant, transmission fluid and high-voltage battery. A further requirement is that the high-performance battery is adequately charged.

Top speed in the electric mode is 60 km/h or 37 mph, maximum range is
2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles).

While driving electrically, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 retains all its safety
and comfort functions. The brakes remain fully operative thanks to electronic vacuum supply, not requiring the combustion engine to develop their full effect. The same applies to the EPS Electronic Power Steering, with steering assistance being generated as required and with maximum efficiency by
an electric motor.

Even the air conditioning remains fully available without any restrictions, running efficiently on an electrical climate compressor. And since the high-performance battery supplies electric power to the complete 12-volt on-board network through a voltage converter regardless of the driving mode, all other power-consuming items such as the lights and the on-board entertainment system remain fully functional at their usual, consistent level.

Recuperation: electric power generated without additional fuel consumption.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 features an enhanced version of Brake Energy Regeneration already used in BMW’s current models running on a combustion engine alone, generating the electric power saved in the high-performance battery. In this case the electric motors act as generators in overrun and when applying the brakes in order to feed electric power into the high-voltage battery unit, again in the interest of maximum efficiency.

This uses energy otherwise simply lost in conventional vehicles as heat escaping through the brakes – and depending on road speed, one or both
of the electric motors may perform this function.

The power delivered by the generator is approximately 50 kW, about 25 times as much as the power provided so far by Brake Energy Regeneration.

Generator delivering electrical brake power.

In the generator mode the two electric motors supply a lot of the energy required to slow down the vehicle whenever necessary. Indeed, the stopping power generated in this way is up to 3 metres/sec2 or, respectively, 0.3 g in a purely recuperative process, significantly reducing the load acting on the mechanical brake system.

Sensotronic Brake Actuation (SBA) in the BMW Active Hybrid X6 may be used at any time without a direct mechanical connection between the brake pedal and the hydraulic circuit. Pedal movement is recorded by sensors and split up by a control unit into brake power generated in a regenerating and
in a hydraulic process. At the same time an integrated pedal force simulator generates the usual brake feeling for the driver as an additional factor in this brake-by-wire solution.

The active brake servo builds up brake pressure with electrical control according to the signals emitted by the control unit. To ensure brake power assistance also in the all-electric mode, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes furthermore with an electrical under-pressure pump replacing the vacuum pressure in the intake system of the combustion engine on a conventional vehicle. A mechanical fallback function, in turn, guarantees full operation of the brake system in the event of a failure or deficiency in the electrical system, in which case the stopping power required is generated by the hydraulic system alone, like on a conventional vehicle.

The primary task of the SBA system is to split up the brake power required
by the driver into a regenerating and a hydraulic brake factor. Via the xDrive powertrain, the hybrid system in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is able to
transmit brake forces to all four wheels generated by the stopping power of the recuperative electric motors. And whenever the stopping power required exceeds the level of 3 metres/sec2, the control unit builds up additional brake force through the mechanical brake by means of the active brake servo.

In braking situations critical to driving stability the control unit receives additional signals from the DSC Dynamic Stability Control, intervening in the brakes and engine management to keep the vehicle safely on course. This ensures safe braking manoeuvres under all conditions, with all driving stability systems developing their complete effect when required regardless of whether the stopping power needed is generated electrically or hydraulically.

A further point is that all driving stability systems are tailored in their
operation to the dynamic character of the Sports Activity Coupé also on
the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. DTC Dynamic Traction Control selected at the touch of a button, for example, provides maximum traction and drive power
on loose surfaces such as snow or sand thanks to its higher slip thresholds. And with the DTC mode activated, the driver may opt for a particularly
sporting style of motoring all the way to a controlled power slide in bends.

BMW xDrive: intelligent all-wheel drive for extra performance, optimum driving stability and supreme traction.

The sports-oriented driving behaviour of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is
also attributable to xDrive all-wheel-drive technology. Permanent all-wheel drive with electronically controlled, variable distribution of drive power front-to-rear gives the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, like all BMW X models, not only superior traction, but also enhanced driving dynamics.

BMW xDrive qualifies as an intelligent all-wheel-drive system in particular through the smooth division of drive power ensured by a power divider with an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch feeding the appropriate level of power to the right axle with optimum wheel contact and grip on the road.

Under normal conditions BMW xDrive spreads out drive power to the front and rear axle in a 40:60 split, sensors consistently measuring wheel slip
both front and rear. The system is able to vary the balance of drive power within fractions of a second, BMW xDrive, unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, thus looking ahead and not only responding when a wheel is already spinning.

Benefiting from these abilities, BMW xDrive raises the driving dynamics of
the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 to an even higher level by recognising even the slightest tendency to over- or understeer right from the start and taking appropriate counter-action.

EPS Electronic Power Steering for even greater driving comfort.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is the first BMW X model to feature EPS Electronic Power Steering. This allows active steering assistance both
when driving with the combustion engine and in the all-electric mode.

EPS provides optimum steering assistance under all conditions to give the driver that special feeling so typical of the BMW brand. Another advantage
is the further reduction of fuel consumption, EPS significantly reducing the energy required for steering assistance compared with conventional, hydraulic power steering, since Electronic Power Steering only becomes active when steering assistance is actually required or desired by the driver. So when driving straight ahead in a straight line, for example, the electric motor does not consume any energy whatsoever.

Electronic Power Steering on the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes complete with fully integrated speed-related Servotronic steering assistance, the reduction of assistance at high speeds ensuring not only safe directional stability but also extremely precise steering behaviour in bends as well as
the safe feeling at high speeds again so characteristic of a BMW. At low speeds, on the other hand, for example when parking, extra power
assistance significantly reduces the steering forces required.

Liquid cooling for even greater performance on the
high-performance battery.

The high-voltage battery featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes
in nickel-metal hydrid technology (NiMH). Capacity is 2.4 kWh, with 1.4 kWh available actively for practical use. Maximum output, in turn, is 57 kW, with
the battery’s control unit permanently determining the output level currently available as well as the charge status of the battery.

The high-performance battery comes with its own liquid cooling system incorporating a heat exchanger to cool the battery through the flow of
air from the outside and, additionally, through the cooling circuit in the air conditioning. These two circuits are activated either individually or
in combination with one another, depending on current requirements,
the control unit selecting the most effective and efficient cooling option
as a function of ambient temperature and the temperature of the
high-voltage storage unit.

Cooling by the air conditioning is activated by an appropriate switch valve, with the electrical climate compressor being switched on automatically whenever required. The interior and the high-voltage battery being cooled separately of one another, cooling is far more efficient than with a system using air cooling only, raising the energy storage medium to a far higher level of performance and retaining the hybrid functions longer in extreme weather and whenever the driver prefers a very sporting style of motoring. Ultimately, this gives BMW ActiveHybrid X6 an outstanding potential in driving dynamics far superior to other hybrid vehicles in the market.

Intelligent energy management and integral safety concept.

Power electronics developed especially for BMW ActiveHybrid technology ensures energy management on board the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 both
very efficient and flexible in use. The electronic control system consistently controls the distribution of energy as a function of ambient conditions, the status of the vehicle, and the demands made by the driver. The most important incoming and control factor for the operating strategy chosen
is the charge status of the high-performance battery saving the electrical energy generated through recuperation.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 naturally complies in full with the integral
safety concepts developed for hybrid vehicles by BMW. With central
control functions being integrated both in the power electronics and the energy battery, the system has the ideal starting point for fulfilling all
kinds of international crash test standards as well as the demanding internal standards of the BMW Group, in particular guaranteeing the highest level of operating safety on all components in the high-voltage on-board network.

Some of the features of this safety concept are the different colours of
cables to avoid any confusion, the presentation of clear safety warnings
and the all-round cover on the entire system using extra-large insulation panels and newly developed connectors.

The high-voltage battery is housed in a high load-resistant steel casing and
is fitted firmly inside the car, just above the rear axle at an extremely safe point for the event of a collision. The status of the storage modules is constantly supervised by integrated safety electronics, the driver being informed immediately of any malfunction and, wherever necessary, the entire system being automatically discharged and deactivated.

In the event of a collision, the system is switched off automatically within fractions of a second, the car’s central safety electronics assessing the severity of an accident and ensuring a safe operating mode as a function
of current, individual requirements.

Special hybrid drive Auto Start Stop function.

In city traffic the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 can be run in the all-electric mode without using the combustion engine. A further advantage is that the vehicle comes with a new generation of Auto Start Stop technology featured here
for the first time. Tailored specifically to the requirements of a hybrid car,
this new Auto Start Stop function allows a much higher standard of comfort and is available more often than the conventional system. Automatic deactivation of the combustion engine at a road junction or at the traffic lights does not in any way impair the driving experience, just as the V8 power unit will start again immediately as soon as the driver presses down the gas pedal.

BMW ActiveHybrid X6 provides the Auto Start Stop function consistently
at all outside temperatures, no matter how cold or how hot.

As long as the engine is switched off, the electric climate compressor automatically maintains the climate and temperature desired within the passenger compartment. All other electrically operated functions are
also maintained, with the on-board network being consistently supplied
with power from the high-voltage storage unit. The only way to deactivate
the special hybrid Auto Start Stop function is by choosing the manual gearshift mode on the automatic transmission.

Additional displays informing the driver of the operating status and efficiency of the hybrid system.

Operation of the hybrid system and current operating conditions are presented clearly and understandably in the displays. The most important information is shown in the central instrument cluster, clearly separated according to the various operating modes. Further information and technical explanations, in turn, are shown in the Info Display in the centre console.

The drive displays are split up into a conventional rev counter for the combustion engine and special displays for electric drive in the lower part of the instrument cluster. Clear visual presentation of these functions shows
the driver that the vehicle is ready to go. The electric drive displays relevant
to the driver are the charge status of the high-voltage storage unit, the recuperation display, the support provided by the electric motors when accelerating through their boost function, as well as the driving stages in the all-electric mode. In the Control Display this information is supplemented by additional data on current operating conditions and the current flow of energy.

Specific set-up of the suspension and the lightweight brakes.

The chassis and suspension of the BMW Active Hybrid X6 is largely the
same as the technology already featured on the BMW X6 xDrive50i. The front axle is a double track arm configuration ensuring excellent driving dynamics, superior motoring comfort and smooth directional stability. The Integral IV rear axle has been modified to reflect the specific characteristics of the hybrid model in terms of weight distribution and drive power, guaranteeing absolute supremacy on the road also ensured by self-levelling with air suspension providing a consistent ride height also when carrying a heavy load.

Lightweight brakes decelerate the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 by means of
swing-calliper brake discs incorporating covers and pistons made of aluminium. Brake disc diameter is 385 millimetres or 15.2” up front and
345 millimetres or 13.6” at the rear. The entire brake system ensures a high standard of comfort in applying the brakes and extreme resistance to fading.

Consistent lightweight engineering serves to reduce unsprung masses and improve the vehicle’s driving comfort and agility.

Very attractive 19-inch light-alloy rims in V-spoke design come as standard, and 20-inch light-alloy rims in aerodynamically optimised Streamline design have been developed exclusively for the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 as an option. In each case the tyres are runflat tyres enabling the driver to continue to the workshop even after a complete loss of pressure. And it almost goes without saying that the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes as standard with a Tyre Defect Indicator incorporating individual tyre pressure control.

Bodyshell and safety: intelligent lightweight construction, optimised occupant safety.

Intelligent lightweight construction and a special structure for maximum solidity also characterise the bodyshell of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. Apart from frontal and hip thorax airbags, curtain head airbags at the side are also standard within the interior.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes with three-point inertia-reel seat belts
on all seats featuring belt force limiters and belt latch tensioners on the front seats. To protect the occupants from cervical spine injury in the event of a collision at the rear, the front seats feature crash-activated headrests, the
rear seats come as standard with ISOFIX child seat fastenings.

All restraint systems are masterminded by central safety electronics, rollover sensors serving to activate the curtain airbags and belt latch tensioners in
the event of an impending rollover.

Featured as standard, dual bi-xenon headlights not only ensure optimum illumination of the road ahead in the dark, but also provide a daytime light function through their corona rings. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 furthermore comes as standard with a light and rain sensor automatically controlling the vehicle’s lights and screenwipers as required. Additional comfort at night
is provided by the High Beam Assistant featured as part of
BMW ConnectedDrive.

Another feature available as an option is Adaptive Headlights following the
 road ahead in providing exact the right illumination. This option comes complete with Bending Lights and variable light distribution broadening
the light beam to provide a wider range of vision as a function of road speed. As an option, finally, information relevant to the driver may be projected on to the windscreen via the Head-Up Display in a particularly ergonomic position.

Over and above safety-relevant driver assistance systems,
BMW ConnectedDrive offers a range of further services enhancing driver comfort and allowing optimised use of the infotainment systems in the
BMW ActiveHybrid X6. This range of mobility services comprises features such as BMW Assist with a telephone enquiry service and an Enhanced Emergency Call function including automatic detection of the vehicle’s location, BMW Online, BMW TeleServices as well as unrestricted use of
the internet in the vehicle.

Supreme level of standard equipment including the Professional navigation system and comfort seats.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes as standard with the BMW Professional navigation system masterminded via iDrive likewise featured as standard or, respectively, with enhanced voice control. Using BMW Routes, in turn,
BMW ConnectedDrive customers are able to retrieve the most beautiful routes directly in the car via BMW Online at the touch of a button. And
apart from navigation data, the user is also able to save his personal music collection on a hard disc within the car offering a capacity of no less than
80 GB.

Other features coming as standard are electrically adjustable comfort
seats with a memory function, cruise control and Park Distance Control.
A further feature likewise coming as standard is an electrical opening and closing function on the tailgate.

+++ BMW presents the X6 in a dynamic online Visualiser +++

Munich. On the road in the new BMW X6: Customers will be able to share in a
completely new vehicle experience when they visit the online Visualiser at the
BMW X6 microsite. For the first time, customers will not only be able to
configure their vehicles in their dream colours with their favourite wheel
rims; they will also be able to watch the vehicle driving through the city, in
a setting they have chosen, with personalised film clips. The trip starts in
the middle of the Double Cone at BMW Welt and continues through ultra-modern
virtual architectural landscapes. Before the trip starts, the special shapes of
the BMW X6 will be highlighted in a 360° rotation. Its design combines the
sporting elegance of the larger BMW coupés with the powerful presence of a BMW
X model. No other automobile can offer anything like the combination of
fascinating features and capabilities provided by the world's first
SportsActivity Coupé. The BMW X6 is getting ready to change traditional
perceptions. The X6 will be available from German dealers from 31 May 2008.
The Visualiser will be available for around three years on the national BMW web
sites. The microsite was developed by OgilvOne from Frankfurt and
Mackevision/Polychrom. To open the Visualiser click on
