The aim is to improve quality, accuracy and speed in complex engineering tasks. The collaboration marks a first step towards scaling domain-specific AI across further areas of vehicle development and the BMW Group value chain.

“For the BMW Group, the use of industrial data is a key factor in translating artificial intelligence into value creation,” said Dr. Franz Decker, CIO and Senior Vice President of the BMW Group. “By combining our engineering datasets with Mistral AI’s model training capabilities, we are building specialized AI which supports complex development tasks.”

Complexity and Data Volume in Crash Simulation

The scale and complexity of crash simulation at the BMW Group underline the need for domain-specific AI. Each week, the company runs thousands of virtual crash simulations, generating vast amounts of engineering data. Over time, this has resulted in a historical dataset of over one petabyte of crash simulation data. It provides highly detailed insights into vehicle structures and material behaviour, forming a unique foundation for training an industrial AI model.

“As Industrial AI becomes the new frontier for AI, we are proud to partner with the BMW Group” said Marjorie Janiewicz, Chief Revenue Officer of Mistral AI. “This collaboration shows how industry specific AI models can help solve complex engineering challenges such as crash simulation.”

Large Industry Model as technical foundation

To scale this approach, the BMW Group is focusing on so-called Large Industry Models (LIM). These are AI systems trained on industry specific engineering and simulation data from vehicle development and safety testing. Unlike general‑purpose AI systems, LIMs embed domain‑specific knowledge directly into the AI model. This requires not only industrial data, but also deep domain expertise and technical environments that allow AI systems to learn directly from BMW’s development processes.

The partnership highlights the importance of industrial data for the next phase of data‑driven value creation and strengthens the BMW Group’s AI and innovation ecosystem.

Press Contact: Benedikt Fischer
Tel: +49-89-382-66887
E-mail: benedikt.fischer@bmwgroup.com

Research & Development,Innovation,Digitalisation,Software Development,Artificial Intelligence,Focus_News

Munich. The BMW Group is further simplifying public
charging of its electric vehicles and setting a new standard for
  convenience and user-friendliness.

Since March 16th, customers in Germany have been able to
charge their all-electric BMW or MINI directly at public DC charging
points using Plug & Charge - without the need for a prior charging contract.

The credit card on file with BMW or MINI is used for this: After
logging in with the corresponding customer ID in the vehicle, it
automatically authenticates itself at the charging station when
plugged in and the charging process starts immediately.

An additional app, charging card or manual steps at the charging
station are therefore no longer necessary.

The new function can be set up in just a few steps via the Plug &
Charge menu in the customer's my BMW or MINI app.

Billing is transparent and based on the provider's current ad hoc
charging price - this price is also displayed in the vehicle and the
  app for supported charging stations.

The costs are paid directly via the stored credit card, so that
drivers retain full cost control and transparency at all times.

The new offer is available to all Plug & Charge-capable BMW and
MINI vehicles and, for the first time, also opens up Plug & Charge
to customer groups without an existing charging contract - including
tourists or fleet- and company-car drivers who only temporarily log
into their vehicle with their BMW or MINI account.

The service launches with Mer Germany across over 1,400 charging
points in Germany and Austria, enabled by Hubject's Plug&Charge
ecosystem and payment facilitation. Further charging point operators
and additional markets will gradually follow in the course of 2026.

With this offer, the BMW Group is emphasising its claim to make
electric mobility not only sustainable, but also as simple and
suitable for everyday use as possible.

Press Contact: Bernhard Ederer
Tel: +49-89-382-28556
E-mail: bernhard.ederer@bmwgroup.com

Research & Development,Innovation,Software Development

Munich. The BMW Group is now offering customers even
broader scope for personalising analysis of their driving stats in the
My BMW App and MINI App. The latest update allows drivers to view
their personal carbon footprint for the first time.

“Our usage research shows: The information in My Trips is one of the
most popular features in the app,” says Dirk Wiedmann, Senior Vice
President Sales Steering and Strategy, Digitalization. “We are now
expanding this successful function with carbon footprint calculation,
giving our customers simple and straightforward access to
sustainability-related information via a popular and widely used channel.”

Emissions from vehicle production and use: two sets of figures
make up the driver’s personal footprint.
The personal carbon footprint function has been designed with a
technology-open approach and is available for vehicles with combustion
engines, as well as plug-in hybrid and fully electric models. At
launch, this feature will be rolled out across selected models in
various European countries*. Calculation of the personal footprint is
based on two central sets of figures.

Emissions from vehicle use: My Trips analyses the
routes the driver has completed and uses the energy consumed in the
process to work out the CO2 emitted. To this end,
CO2 equivalents are calculated using data from the
International Energy Agency (IEA). For vehicles with combustion
engines, the app calculates the amount of CO2 emitted
based on the fuel consumed. For battery-electric vehicles, it shows
the emissions generated when using the average national energy mix –
and also tells the driver how high emissions would be by comparison
    if green energy was used.

Emissions from vehicle production: These are
emissions generated during the manufacturing process. Emissions are
recorded from the processing of raw materials, procurement of
materials, transport logistics and the production of the model at
hand. The BMW Group already sets out the emissions figures for
numerous models in the form of Vehicle Footprint Reports. These are
calculated according to recognised standards for life cycle
assessments and certified by the TÜV Rheinland agency. They can also
    be downloaded
    from the BMW Group website.

Ready for electric mobility: My BMW App helps with the transition.

The My BMW App also includes the Electric Vehicle Analysis introduced
last summer. This function allows customers whose BMW is powered by a
combustion engine to simulate how well a fully electric BMW fits their
personal driving profile. Here, the customer selects an electric BMW
model as an alternative vehicle in the app. Once the
combustion-engined model has made at least 200 journeys and covered a
distance of 2,000 kilometres (over 1,240 miles), the analysis shows
the journeys the user could have completed on a single charge with the
electric vehicle selected, and also flags up charging stations close
to frequently visited destinations. More than 100,000 customers had
used this analysis by May 2025.

Over 14 million customers around the world use the My BMW App and
MINI App. The My Trips function is available in more than 90 countries
and is actively used by 1.9 million users.

* The new function is available to users of vehicles for which a
TÜV-certified carbon footprint has been calculated. The feature will
launch in Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, Luxemburg and
Switzerland, and be available in the BMW 1 Series (code 81GE), BMW 2
  Series (31GH), BMW X2 (71GM, 21GM), BMW X3 (11GR, 31GP, 65GP), BMW 5
  Series (31FK, 11JF, 71FJ), BMW 5 Series Touring (11HH, 11GW, 21GV),
BMW M5 (81FK) and BMW iX (41CF) and MINI Cooper (11GC), MINI Cooper C
  (11GD), MINI Aceman (31GC) and MINI Countryman (41GA, 11GA).

Munich/Spartanburg, USA. The BMW Group is exploring
the use of humanoid robots in production for the first time. During a
trial run lasting several weeks at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, the
latest humanoid robot Figure 02 from California company Figure
successfully inserted sheet metal parts into specific fixtures, which
were then assembled as part of the chassis. The robot must be
particularly dexterous to complete this production step.

At the same time, using a robot can save employees from having to
perform ergonomically awkward and tiring tasks. Together with Figure,
the BMW Group is currently testing and evaluating how humanoid robots
can be used safely in automobile production. This video shows the
trial run in the body shop at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg: https://b.mw/Figure_02

“The developments in the field of robotics are very promising. With
an early test operation, we are now determining possible applications
for humanoid robots in production. We want to accompany this
technology from development to industrialization,” says Milan
Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management for Production at BMW AG.

With the BMW iFACTORY, the vision for the production of the future,
the BMW Group is always on the lookout for new technologies.
Efficiency, digitalisation and sustainability are central to this
vision to realisation. During the trial run, the BMW Group gained
valuable knowledge of what requirements must be met in order to be
able to integrate so-called multi-purpose robots in an existing
production system. This includes how humanoid robots communicate with
the system under real conditions. After the first use in automobile
production, the experts at the BMW Group and Figure are collaborating
to prepare Figure for future applications in production and continuing
to develop the robots, based on the findings.

Figure 02 embodies the latest technological advances in robotics

“We are excited to unveil Figure 02, our second-generation humanoid
robot, which recently completed successful testing at the BMW Group
Plant Spartanburg. Figure 02 has significant technical advancements,
which enable the robot to perform a wide range of complex tasks fully
autonomously,” says Brett Adcock, Founder and CEO of Figure.

According to the California company, Figure 02 is the world’s most
advanced humanoid robot currently available on the market. The
combination of two-legged mobility and advanced dexterity means that
the Figure 02 is ideally suited for use in areas with physically
demanding, unsafe, or repetitive processes, thereby improving
ergonomics and safety for associates. Figure 02 boasts three times the
processing power of its predecessor, improved voice communication,
better cameras, microphones, and sensors, a high-performance battery,
and fourth-generation human-scale hands with 16 degrees of freedom per
  hand and human-equivalent strength.

The robot is capable of fully autonomous execution of human-like and
two-handed tasks requiring varied and dynamic manipulation, complex
grasping, and coordination of both hands in unison. It is able place
various complex parts with accuracy measured in millimetres and can
walk dynamically leveraging efficienties of the robot’s design.

Currently, there are no Figure AI robots at BMW Group Plant
Spartanburg, and there is no definite timetable established for
bringing Figure robots to the plant. BMW Group will continue to work
with Figure for data capturing and training capabilities for the
  Figure02 robots.

Press Contact: Benedikt Torka
Tel: +49-151-601-32455
E-mail: benedikt.torka@bmwgroup.com

Research & Development,Production,Logistics,Digitalisation,Information Technology,Software Development
