Beijing. The BMW Group’s exhibition stand at Auto China 2026 is dedicated entirely to the Neue Klasse. In Beijing, the new BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase, the new BMW i3 Long Wheelbase, and the new BMW 7 Series featuring Neue Klasse technologies are celebrating their world premieres. “With the introduction of the new BMW iX3 for China, the BMW i3 for China, and the new BMW 7 Series, we are marking an important milestone in the biggest future project in BMW’s history: the Neue Klasse. We are making a major leap – in technology, driving experience, and design,” said Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “With the new BMW 7 Series, we are demonstrating how we are scaling the new technology clusters and the new design language across our entire portfolio. The BMW Group’s presence at Auto China 2026 highlights its technological focus. The company is showcasing numerous forward-looking innovations in Beijing, including a digital experience featuring BMW Panoramic iDrive that is tailored entirely to the needs of customers in China, as well as driver assistance systems developed specifically for the demands of Chinese traffic conditions. The MINI brand is also present at Auto China 2026, attracting attention with two emotional concept cars.

The BMW iX3 and BMW i3: world premieres for the first two Neue Klasse models developed specifically for China.

The first Neue Klasse models developed in China for China are celebrating their world premieres at Auto China 2026: the new BMW iX3 and the new BMW i3. Both models embody the leap into a new era and reflect BMW’s ambition to lead innovation in China, the company’s largest single market, particularly in electrification, digitalisation, and software-defined vehicles.

With their distinctive Neue Klasse design language, the BMW iX3 and the new BMW i3 herald a new era in BMW design. Both models combine typical BMW proportions with a pared-back, more technical design language. Key features include a reinterpretation of the iconic BMW kidney grille, integrated light signatures, and forward-oriented lines.

Both the new BMW iX3 and the new BMW i3 are based on the sixth generation of BMW eDrive technology (Gen6). A key feature of Gen6 BMW eDrive technology is the cylindrical cell technology of the high-voltage battery. This enables a range of more than 900 kilometres on a single charge in the new BMW iX3, according to the CLTC cycle. In the new BMW i3, the maximum range, according to the CLTC cycle, exceeds 1,000 kilometres. Thanks to the Neue Klasse’s 800-volt architecture, both models can be charged at a fast-charging station with a peak charging power of 400 kW. According to the CLTC standard, this allows enough energy for up to 400 kilometres of driving to be added in ten minutes.

World premiere of the new BMW 7 Series – the first luxury sedan featuring Neue Klasse technologies.

The BMW Group is making a powerful statement with the new BMW 7 Series: as the most exclusive interpretation of sheer driving pleasure, it underlines its leadership in the luxury segment.

The new BMW 7 Series represents the most extensive model revision in the history of the BMW Group. In its seventh generation the BMW 7 Series once again makes a significant leap forward. As the brand’s flagship and image leader, the new BMW 7 Series assumes a pioneering role in introducing Neue Klasse technologies into existing models. This step also marks the beginning of a cross-segment and cross-powertrain technology roll-out that will benefit all future BMW models.

Design premiere of BMW’s luxury class.

The new BMW 7 Series embodies the specific interpretation of the new BMW design language for the luxury segment. A monolithic exterior, the new BMW Iconic Glow kidney grille, and minimalist crystal headlights create a striking presence and strong visual identity. The side profile impresses with reduced surfaces, a distinctive character line, and refined details, while the rear is defined by newly designed lights and clear, precise forms.

The clear design language featuring high-quality surfaces, such as leather, textiles, wood, crystal glass, and metal, together with an immersive lighting concept with an ambient light strip and new lighting elements, creates an exclusive yet welcoming atmosphere.

BMW Panoramic iDrive and the BMW Passenger Screen open up new dimensions in entertainment and information.

The new BMW 7 Series combines the strengths of a luxury sedan with innovative Neue Klasse technologies to deliver a comprehensive digital user experience that places both the driver and the passengers centre stage. Highlights include the new BMW Panoramic iDrive with optimal driver orientation and the first-ever BMW Passenger Screen, the enhanced BMW Theatre Screen for a cinematic experience or mobile working in the rear, as well as the Bowers & Wilkins sound system with Dolby Atmos support for an outstanding audio experience.

The multimodal operating logic of the BMW Panoramic iDrive combines touch-based, haptic, and voice interaction. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, featuring Amazon Alexa+ AI technology, plays a central role in this. ^[1]In China, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is enhanced with DeepSeek AI technology.

New driver assistance systems in the BMW 7 Series.

The comprehensively upgraded Level 2 driver assistance systems in the new BMW 7 Series enable hands-free driving on motorways at speeds of up to 130 km/h in many European countries, the United States, and Canada, including automated lane changes following eye confirmation and “Entry-to-Exit” assistance. The City Assistant offers navigation-guided “Address-to-Address” driver assistance through BMW Symbiotic Drive. ^[2] BMW Symbiotic Drive ensures seamless interaction between assistance systems and human driving behaviour. The driver’s intention to accelerate, brake, or steer merges intuitively with AI-supported software. The BMW 7 Series relies on driver assistance technologies that were specifically adapted for the Chinese market.

New “Address-to-Address” driver assistance system specifically for the Chinese market.

Beginning with the BMW iX3, BMW is introducing a new driver assistance system developed specifically for Chinese traffic conditions. By the end of 2027, it will be available in 12 BMW models in China, including the new BMW 7 Series and BMW i3. For more than 20 years, BMW has been a pioneer in the development of driver assistance systems, always placing safety and reliability under complex, real-world conditions at the forefront. For the new generation of intelligent BMW driver assistance in China, BMW combines decades of experience in functional integration and operational safety with the strengths of locally trained end-to-end AI, developed in partnership with the Chinese company Momenta. The result is a unique system for navigation-guided “Address-to-Address” driver assistance. The central computer for automated driving works in harmony with the “Heart of Joy”. In the new iX3 and i3, BMW Soft-Stop technology delivers the smoothest assisted driving experience to date.

Another highlight of these new driver assistance technologies is the unique cooperative braking system. When driver assistance is activated, it allows the driver to influence the system with light braking input without deactivating assistance. This function underlines BMW’s symbiotic philosophy for Level 2 driver assistance systems, including in China. As a result, the driver remains involved in a collaborative interaction between human and artificial intelligence. The entire user experience with BMW Panoramic iDrive is designed to ensure that the driver is always informed about the system’s status and remains intuitively attentive.

A digital leap forward: BMW Panoramic iDrive and the digital user experience for China.

With the start of the Neue Klasse, the display and control concept becomes a key driver of the in-vehicle digital user experience. At its heart is BMW Panoramic iDrive, which will be shown for the first time in China in models with Neue Klasse technologies presented at Auto China 2026. These cutting-edge technologies were adapted to meet local market needs.

It is based on BMW Operating System X. The system is designed to be scalable within the brand: core functions, architecture, and design principles are globally uniform, while content, services, and technologies can be adapted to specific markets and regions.

This scalability allows BMW to tailor digital functions to different usage habits and regulatory frameworks. One example is voice interaction: while BMW relies on Amazon technologies in Europe and the United States, in China, it uses a proprietary solution developed in collaboration with local technology partners such as DeepSeek. This way, BMW integrates different technological approaches within the same system architecture without compromising quality, safety, or user experience.

BMW has comprehensively enhanced the digital system for the Chinese market. This goes beyond localisation, representing a version designed for China. Around 70 per cent of the Chinese version of the BMW Operating System X is developed in local development centres. On-site teams contribute their expertise in Chinese user behaviour, for example, in voice interaction, navigation, personalisation, and the integration of digital ecosystems.

A key factor in this success is close collaboration with leading Chinese technology companies. Together with partners like Alibaba, DeepSeek, Amap, and Huawei, BMW develops digital functions and services that integrate deeply into the Chinese ecosystem. These collaborations support the integration of modern AI technologies, local services, and content into the in-car experience.

Navigation is also deeply integrated into the overall digital experience. In collaboration with Amap, BMW offers high-resolution, lane-accurate navigation in China that precisely visualises complex traffic situations and urban junctions. The content appears consistently across all relevant display levels for safe and intuitive navigation.

Furthermore, BMW Panoramic iDrive opens up new possibilities for personalisation. Configurable content, customisable widgets, and AI-powered functions allow the digital vehicle experience to adapt to different usage scenarios, from daily commuting and family journeys to business trips.

That is why China plays a key role in the BMW Group’s global digital strategy. The combination of scalable system architecture, local development expertise, and close partnerships with Chinese technology companies allows BMW to implement market-specific digital innovations while making them available worldwide.

The BMW iX3 Flow Edition demonstrates the production-ready status of BMW E Ink technology.

The world premiere of the new BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase at Auto China 2026 is accompanied by the BMW iX3 Flow Edition concept car. It offers a striking example of the transition from a static to a dynamic vehicle surface. Its E Ink technology, seamlessly integrated into the bonnet, allows the driver to choose among eight carefully selected animations at the touch of a button. The iconic Chinese buildings resemble modernity and progress. Ranging from subtle to expressive, the design makes innovation visible and conveys the driver’s style and mood in a personalised and context-sensitive way. By integrating this technology into the bonnet of the BMW iX3 Flow Edition, the BMW Group takes E Ink to a new level. Integrated into a large-scale bodywork element for the first time, the concept car demonstrates the technology’s readiness for series production.

Special editions and one-offs highlight the diversity of the MINI brand.

With its diverse vehicle portfolio, MINI underscores its commitment to individual design and a broad range of character at Auto China 2026. This includes several special editions highlighting the brand’s design and heritage, including the MINI Paul Smith Special Edition, as well as various models from the high-performance John Cooper Works sub-brand.

A highlight of the display is the one-off MINI x Vagabund. Based on the MINI Countryman, two unique vehicles were created in collaboration with the Austrian design studio Vagabund. With a bespoke sound system, striking graphic accents, and an expressive colour scheme, the MINI concept cars become a mobile soundstage, embodying a spirit of adventure, community culture, and festival lifestyle. One of the two MINI x Vagabund vehicles will be presented in Beijing.

MINI will also showcase the MINI JCW “The Skeg” at Auto China 2026. The model is the result of a collaboration with Deux ex Machina and combines influences from surf and motorsport culture to highlight the sporty, progressive side of the MINI brand.

A series production preview of BMW’s hydrogen fuel cell technology: the BMW iX5 Hydrogen prototype in ‘Flow Emergence’ design.

Another eye-catcher at the BMW Group’s exhibition stand at Auto China 2026 is the redesigned vehicle from the BMW Hydrogen Pilot Fleet, which has been in global operation since 2023. From 2028, the new BMW iX5 Hydrogen will become the first BMW series-production vehicle powered by a hydrogen fuel cell drive. In doing so, the BMW Group is bringing the benefits of this technology into everyday use: electric driving with long ranges and short refuelling stops.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen from the pilot fleet, presented at Auto China 2026, also draws attention with its design concept developed by Designworks Shanghai. Thematically aligned with BMW’s hydrogen fuel cell technology, the wrap concept, developed under the motto ‘Flow Emergence’, uses water as a metaphor to visualise the generation and transformation of energy in nature. Inspired by water landscapes and Far Eastern watercolour painting, it illustrates the condensation of time and energy. The flowing visual language, with gentle colour gradients, conveys the transition from stillness to movement and the unfolding from within. The design of the pilot fleet vehicle at Auto China 2026 symbolises the continuous transformation of energy for climate-friendly and sustainable mobility in the future.

Innovation and bespoke individuality across 4,400 square metres of exhibition space.

The BMW Group is exhibiting its BMW and MINI brands at Auto China 2026 across a record exhibition space of around 4,400 square metres. This space is almost three times larger than in 2024 and underscores the importance of the Chinese market to the company. The exhibition stand showcases a total of 42 vehicles, including 28 BMW vehicles and 14 MINI vehicles, with three world premieres and 14 vehicles that are individualised, customised, classic cars, or special edition cars. Two BMW motorcycles will also be featured at Auto China 2026.

The BMW Highlight Show, featuring a 300-square-metre LED wall, presents the new BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase and the new BMW 7 Series to visitors throughout the day. Through interactive exhibits, ten ‘Deep Dive’ stations invite visitors to explore the latest technologies and charging solutions, including robotics and bidirectional charging. The extensive BMW Individual range is illustrated through an exhibition of 164 paint samples and 36 leather samples. An immersive audio experience with Dolby Atmos and Bowers & Wilkins creates an exceptional sound environment.

Munich. The latest version of the BMW X3 is poised for market launch in China. The country’s most successful Sports Activity Vehicle will arrive at Chinese dealerships in just a few days and will go on sale later in February 2025.

Drive system: two petrol engines to choose from.

This exclusive version of the BMW X3 was developed and will be produced specifically for the Chinese market to meet the exacting expectations of customers in the high-growth SAV segment. The outgoing model was the strongest-selling BMW vehicle worldwide in 2023. 156,000 units were delivered in China alone – accounting for around 40 per cent of all BMW X model sales in the region.

The new BMW X3 will be launched in China with two engine variants. Customers can choose from a pair of four-cylinder petrol engines: the BMW X3 xDrive 25L Luxury develops 140 kW (190 hp) and maximum torque of 310 Nm (229 lb-ft). This is enough to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.7 seconds on the way to a top speed of 214 km/h (133 mph). The even more dynamic BMW X3 xDrive 30L – available in the equipment variants Pioneering MSP and Exclusive MSP – generates 190 kW (258 hp) and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), and sprints from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 6.5 seconds. Top speed is 239 km/h (148 mph).

Longer wheelbase, more space, more comfort.
Alongside its BMW-typical sporting ability, the new SAV for the premium midsize class majors on high quality and comfort. For the first time, the version of the BMW X3 produced in China for China has an extended wheelbase. Yet it also retains the 50:50 weight distribution for which BMW is renowned, which results in almost perfect balance and therefore top-class handling. In addition, the 111-millimetre-longer wheelbase ensures even smoother and even more stable driving characteristics. And once inside, passengers can enjoy a significantly enhanced feeling of space.

This extra spaciousness is particularly noticeable in the rear compartment. Here, kneeroom has increased by a full 96 millimetres and legroom to over a metre. The new BMW X3 with extended wheelbase is 126 millimetres longer than the predecessor model and 25 millimetres wider. Its exterior length of 4,865 millimetres and width of 1,920 millimetres also mean it has the largest dimensions of any vehicle in its segment. However, it still has the hallmark proportions of a BMW X model, complete with a long roofline flowing smoothly into the rear end and a dynamically stretched silhouette.

Generous and exclusive equipment with a host of highlights.
The luxurious driving experience is complemented by the high-quality and exclusive specification of the new BMW X3. Playing a prominent role here are the standard features enhanced by an array of market-specific details. Thanks to the new BMW iDrive based on BMW Operating System 9, customers in China benefit from a large number of exclusive digital services. The content of the BMW Digital Premium offering has been adapted precisely to the particular requirements and demands of customers in the Chinese market.

The exterior also stars with exclusive details for the Chinese market. Both model variants come as standard with BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting, which shows off the BMW kidney grille to eye-catching effect. The range of colour shades available comprises five exquisite metallic paint finishes, including a particularly striking Frozen variant that gives the car a visually impactful presence.

From China, for China: local production brings many benefits.
The two BMW X3 variants are tailored more keenly than ever to the preferences of discerning target groups in China. The vehicle concept, design, technology and equipment have all been adapted as required with no change to the prices asked for the predecessor model. BMW has also focused on its Shenyang base in China when it comes to development and production. The new BMW X3 models will be built at Plant Lydia, which BMW operates in tandem with its joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) and which employs cutting-edge, resource-conserving and efficient production methods. Local production also reduces transportation distances, optimises logistics and actively contributes to greater sustainability.

Munich. BMW is adding another Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) to its range of models developed exclusively for the Chinese automotive market. The new version of the BMW X3, built in China for China, features an extended wheelbase for the first time, offering more legroom and a particularly comfortable driving experience in the rear. The luxurious interior of the new SAV for the premium mid-range vehicle segment is further enhanced by an extensive range of standard equipment with market-specific details. The new BMW iDrive is based on the BMW Operating System 9. It enables the use of numerous digital services that are exclusively available in China. The content of the BMW Digital Premium range is also tailored to the needs and requirements of Chinese customers.

The vehicle concept, design, technology and equipment were precisely tailored to the preferences of discerning target groups in China. Both models are produced at the Shenyang site. The Lydia plant there is the latest production facility of the BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) joint venture. It offers ideal conditions for high-quality, efficient and resource-conserving production. 

Largest dimensions in term of length in the competitive environment, outstanding interior comfort.

The model variants of the new BMW X3 produced in Shenyang combine the clear, modern surface design of the brand's current design language with the typical proportions of BMW X models. The long roofline flows gently into the rear, creating a dynamically stretched silhouette. With an exterior length of 4,865 millimetres and a width of 1,920 millimetres, they have the most generous dimensions in the competitive environment. Both models come with BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting for the BMW radiator grille as standard. A choice of five metallic paint finishes is available for the exterior.

The wheelbase of the new BMW X3 has been increased by 110 millimetres to 2,975 millimetres compared with the globally available model variants of the new BMW X3. The BMW Curved Display, the BMW Interaction Bar, the steering wheel with a flattened lower rim and the colour-contrasting lighting elements in the centre console and door panels create a modern ambience in a new style for the BMW X models. The standard Veganza comfort seats with leather-like characteristics are available in three two-tone colours. The particularly high-quality "Crafted Clarity" glass applications for selected controls are available as an option. In addition to the extra legroom, the standard comfort cushions and centre armrest with integrated tray for wireless charging of suitable smartphones ensure exclusive comfort in the rear. Another highlight is the panoramic glass roof with optional skylounge lighting in several colours and modern graphic display, which complements the ambient lighting in the interior.

New BMW X3: Most successful SAV in China now even more attractive.

With its modern design, more space and advanced digitalisation based on the BMW Operating System 9, the new BMW X3 is ideally positioned to add a new chapter to the SAV success story in China. The predecessor model was the brand's best-selling vehicle worldwide in 2023. In China alone, around 156,000 units of the BMW X3 have been delivered to customers. This means that the premium mid-range SAV accounted for around 40 percent of all BMW X model sales in China.

Now in its fourth model generation, the BMW X3 produced in Shenyang is more than ever focused on the wishes of Chinese customers. Following in the footsteps of the locally produced BMW X1 and BMW X5, the new BMW X3 features an extended wheelbase and numerous market-specific equipment options. As a result, it is more attractive than ever and perfectly prepared for new successes in the world's largest automotive market.

Munich. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5, developed exclusively for China and produced in China, will hit the country's roads just a few weeks after their debut at the Auto Guangzhou 2023 motorshow. The new edition of the world's most successful business sedan will be available in China for the first time with both highly efficient combustion engines and all-electric drive.

The models, which have been specially tailored to the needs of the Chinese target groups, feature a 12 centimeter extended wheelbase and different proportions compared to the versions offered worldwide, as well as market-specific equipment features and digital services. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China thus offer a combination of sporty elegance, luxurious rear space and a progressive user experience which is unique in their segment. The new models will be produced exclusively for the Chinese market at the Dadong plant operated in Shenyang by the joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd.

Around two million units of the BMW 5 Series Sedan have been sold in China since the start of local production in 2003. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China are based on the eighth generation of the series. With their design and technology, they are ideally placed to continue the success story that recently saw the BMW 5 Series Sedan become the best-selling premium model in its segment on the Chinese car market.

Petrol engines with 48-volt mild hybrid system and BMW eDrive technology.

The drive portfolio of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan for China is characterised by consistent electrification. It includes four-cylinder petrol engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology and an output of 140 kW/190 hp for the new BMW 525Li Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 6.5 litres/100 km (62 miles); CO₂ emissions combined: 155 g/km according to CLTC) with 190 kW/258 hp for the BMW 530Li Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 6.8 litres/100 km (62 miles); CO₂ emissions combined: 163 g/km according to CLTC). The all-electric drive of the new BMW i5 eDrive35L Sedan (power consumption combined: 14.8 kWh/100 km (62 miles) according to CLTC) generates a maximum output of 210 kW/286 hp.

In addition, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Sedan model produced for the global market (power consumption combined: 16.3 kWh/ 100 km (62 miles) according to CLTC) is offered in China. Its drive system consists of one electric motor on the front axle and one on the rear axle, which generate a combined maximum output of 442 kW/601 hp in My Mode SPORT. The outstanding performance characteristics of this model are enhanced by a unique suspension technology and M specific design features.

Two equipment packages are available for all model variants produced exclusively for the Chinese automotive market. The M Sport Package emphasises the dynamic character of the sedan with unique design features. These include M specific versions of the front air intakes, the side sills and the rear apron as well as 19-inch M light alloy wheels. Alternatively, the Luxury Line option underlines the car's premium, elegant character with 19-inch bi-colour alloy wheels and interior trims in Ash Grey Blue veneer wood finish with silver accents.

Distinctive proportions, exclusive design features.

The individual proportions of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China are reflected not only in the extended wheelbase, but also in the roofline, which flows gently into the rear. Market-specific paint finishes and gold-coloured design accents on the exterior are specifically tailored to the style preferences of Chinese customers in the premium segment.

Another exclusive detail is the illuminated Chinese character for the number 5 in the area of the Hofmeister kink counter-swing on the C-pillar. In the new BMW i5, it emits blue light signals that pulsate discreetly and at a low frequency while the high-voltage battery is charging.

Progressive luxury in the interior: BMW Curved Display, BMW Theatre Screen.

The enhanced BMW iDrive with "QuickSelect", the BMW Curved Display and the functions of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which have been specially tailored to the needs of Chinese customers, enable convenient and intuitive interaction between driver and vehicle. In the rear of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China, model-specific seats and the BMW Theatre Screen ensure outstanding travel comfort. A wireless charging station for compatible smartphones in the rear and market-specific digital services for infotainment and online communication also contribute to the progressive luxury ambience.

The semi-automatic driving and parking systems offered for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 in China are characterised by exceptional functionality, availability and reliability. These systems have been specially adapted to suit Chinese traffic conditions and driver behaviour. The highlight of the range is the Active Lane Change Assistant with eye activation.

Uncompromising quality through artificial intelligence in production.

With the start of production of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China, the Dadong plant of the joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. is using innovative production processes. For example, artificial intelligence (AI) is used in the body shop and paint shop to optimise quality control.

In this way, the Shenyang plant is systematically continuing its transformation into the BMW iFACTORY based on the principles of "lean", "clean" and "digital". The use of 100 per cent renewable electricity in the production of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 ensures efficient and resource-conserving production. Other factors contributing to the reduced CO₂ footprint of the new model generation include the increased use of secondary raw materials and a completely vegan interior.

Munich. The new BMW X5 for the Chinese market is setting out to build on its success story to date with the help of fresh design flourishes and an extensive technological update. Having already enjoyed considerable popularity in China since their initial launch, the two variants of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) for the executive segment now have even greater appeal, thanks mainly to their increased sense of visual presence, the upgraded BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and their efficient, electrified engines. The new BMW X5 for China therefore has the ideal tools to further consolidate its position as the market leader in its segment. The new BMW X5 xDrive30Li (fuel consumption combined: 8.7 l/100 km [32.5 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 208 g/km in the WLTP cycle) and new BMW X5 xDrive40Li (fuel consumption combined: 8.9 l/100 km [31.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 213 g/km in the WLTP cycle) are making their public debut at the Chengdu Motor Show on 25 August 2023.

The overall concept of the BMW X5 xDrive30Li and BMW X5 xDrive40Li models caters specifically to the requirements of target groups in China. The extra 130 millimetres of wheelbase compared with the version of the BMW X5 available in other markets around the world means that passengers in the rear enjoy extremely generous legroom. The rear doors have likewise been widened, making it easier to get in and out. There are also specially designed seats and exclusive equipment features that serve to enhance long-distance comfort. The new editions of the BMW X5 models for China will be built at the Dadong plant of the BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. joint venture in Shenyang, and their launch is due to get underway in September 2023.

Visually powerful exterior design for greater presence.

The fresh interpretation of the headlights and kidney grille – both signature BMW design elements – gives the front end greater presence while emphasising the aura of supreme assurance around the new BMW X5 xDrive30Li and BMW X5 xDrive40Li. The outline of the new headlight units is 35 millimetres narrower than before. Their daytime driving light elements pointing outwards in the shape of an arrow also perform the role of turn signal indicators. Matrix LED headlights with adaptive control and BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling high beam come as standard on the new BMW X5 xDrive40Li and are available as an option for the new BMW X5 xDrive30Li. The rear light units have also been restyled and now feature sculptural fibre-optic light guide elements for the rear and brake lights with a particularly eye-catching arrangement that creates a uniformly illuminated X motif.

The BMW kidney grille Iconic Glow is fitted as standard on both model variants of the new BMW X5 for China. Its cascade lighting adds an unmistakable visual touch, especially in the dark, and is now combined with a chrome surface finish. The air curtains for the front apron and the air breathers on the front side panels have also been redesigned as part of the exterior styling modifications. The choice of body colours now includes a Frozen paint finish for the first time. The BMW Individual Frozen Pure Grey metallic option with its matt shimmer allows the clearly designed surfaces of the SAV to stand out to notably striking effect.

The new edition of the BMW X5 for China is available in two equipment lines. Both model variants come equipped as standard with an M Sport package, whose numerous design elements in Black high-gloss bring the SAV’s sense of sporting refinement to the fore. The optional M Sport package Luxury further embellishes the vehicle’s imposing looks by adding exclusive inlays in Pearl-effect Chrome for the front and rear aprons, the side skirts, the air breathers, the side window borders and the roof rails.

Progressive premium interior ambience including digital cockpit.

Inside, the surfaces of the instrument panel, door panels and model-specific comfort seats are trimmed in very fine-grained Sensafin, underlining the premium character of the new BMW X5 for China. The Travel & Comfort System that comes as standard includes USB-C ports on the front seat backs.

The new BMW X5 xDrive30Li and BMW X5 xDrive40Li both feature the latest-generation BMW iDrive display and control/operation system with QuickSelect. It is based on BMW Operating System 8.5 and offers brand new graphics including a home screen with an exceptionally clear layout. The improved menu structure that takes its cue from consumer electronics devices helps to deliver a focused, commanding driving experience by always showing the right information in the right place. The QuickSelect rapid-access tech makes selecting and operating vehicle functions and digital services remarkably simple and intuitive. This, together with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, means that the upgraded BMW iDrive has been carefully geared to operation using touch and voice control. The BMW Curved Display also provides the perfect stage for the new BMW iDrive in the Chinese version of the new BMW X5. It is composed of a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and a 14.9-inch control display that merge into a single high-resolution, fully digital unit. Adding to the appeal of the BMW Curved Display are its frameless design and glass surface angled slightly towards the driver.

Electroplated detailing on the steering wheel and the insides of the doors, a smartphone tray with inductive charging that has been designed exclusively for the Chinese market, metal grilles for the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System’s speakers, Crafted Clarity glass applications for selected controls, the new-look selector lever and the ambient light bar with its effective backlighting put the finishing touches to the progressive premium ambience inside the cabin. The panoramic glass sunroof fitted as standard, meanwhile, can be ordered in the Sky Lounge version as an option.

Choice of profiles for targeted customisation, innovative automated driving and parking systems.

Besides the two design and equipment lines M Sport package and M Sport package Luxury, there is also a choice of two profiles for the new BMW X5 xDrive30Li and BMW X5 xDrive40Li that add further top-quality comfort features and chassis and assistance systems to the already extensive standard specification. The profiles have been compiled specifically for each model variant, with highlights including adaptive two-axle air suspension, M Sport brakes,
21-inch light-alloy wheels, active seat ventilation and a Heat Comfort package.
A range of individual options are additionally available, such as an Anthracite-coloured M headliner, M seat belts, extended M High-gloss Shadowline trim,
22-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design and BMW Individual light-alloy wheels in V-spoke design that are also 22 inches in diameter.

There is a wider selection of automated driving and parking systems, too. BMW Driving Assistant Professional adds a number of features, including the Steering and Lane Control Assistant and Highway Assistant. An updated version of the Reversing Assistant is one of the functions forming part of the BMW Parking Assistant Professional package, along with the Manoeuvre Assistant that allows automated parking and manoeuvring to be controlled from outside the vehicle using a smartphone.

Engines with 48V mild hybrid technology, new eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.

The two petrol engines available for the new BMW X5 for the Chinese market are part of the new modular generation of BMW Group Efficient Dynamics engines and now come with 48V mild hybrid technology. Both channel their power through to the road via a new eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive as standard. Electrification of the power units results in extremely rapid response to the slightest movement of the accelerator, both when pulling away and when putting in a sudden burst of speed. And it has the additional effect of increasing engine efficiency, which is further helped by the refined BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder in-line petrol unit in the new BMW X5 xDrive30Li delivers an output of 190 kW/258 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft), enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.2 seconds. The straight-six petrol engine under the bonnet of the new BMW X5 xDrive40Li generates maximum output of 280 kW/380 hp from its 3.0-litre displacement with torque peaking at 520 Nm (383 lb-ft). This means the car can race to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in 5.5 seconds. The BMW X5 xDrive40Li is also capable of driving on pure electric power at very low speeds.

Munich. Sporty elegance, groundbreaking technology and luxurious space at the rear are combined in the model variants of the new ##BMW 5 Series Sedan## and the new BMW i5 which have been specially developed for the Chinese automotive market. Adapted in numerous details to the specific requirements of Chinese target groups, the versions of the new business sedan feature a 12 centimeter extended wheelbase and distinctive proportions. This results in particularly generous space and comfort in the rear, which is further enhanced by exclusive equipment features.

For the first time, the BMW 5 Series Sedan for China will be offered not just with highly efficient combustion engines but also with an all-electric model in the form of the BMW i5. The car’s progressive character is also reflected in the further developed BMW iDrive featuring “QuickSelect”: with its BMW ##Curved Display## and China-specific digital services, this enables an innovative form of interaction between human being and automobile.

The new ##BMW 5 Series Sedan## and the new ##BMW i5## for China are based on the eighth generation of the world’s most successful business sedan. More than 10 million BMW 5 Series vehicles have been produced since 1972. The BMW 5 Series continues to grow in popularity in China too, with some 530,000 vehicles of the series having been delivered to Chinese customers from 2020 to 2022 alone. This makes the BMW 5 Series Sedan the market leader in the premium upper mid-range vehicle segment. A total of around two million units have been sold since the start of local production in China.

The fourth generation of model variants specially developed for China is being launched in the form of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5. The new models will be produced exclusively for the Chinese market at the Dadong plant operated in Shenyang by the joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd.

Distinctive proportions, exclusive design features.

Right from the outset, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China have been designed with a clear focus on the needs of Chinese target groups. Its exterior design combines signature brand features with innovative elements, ensuring it is oriented towards the stylistic preferences of a young generation of customers in China who value inspiring charisma and individual flair. A characteristic combination of dynamic performance and elegance gives the new models a distinctive and emotional appearance.

The upright front section of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China signals a self-confident presence. It features a modern interpretation of BMW’s hallmark twin headlights and a BMW radiator grille that extends far forward with striking contour lighting. The side view is dominated by clear-cut, amply designed surfaces. Distinctive proportions are ensured by a roofline that slopes gently to the rear combined and a wheelbase that is extended compared to other variants of the new business sedan available worldwide. At the powerful rear of the new models slim LED lights divided by a chrome strip add a powerfully expressive accentuation.

An innovative lighting design likewise contributes to the inspiring appearance of the new models. The interior lighting, the LED headlights, the contour lighting of the BMW radiator grille and the light carpet in the entrance area create a carefully coordinated, five-stage welcome and goodbye scenario. One exclusive detail of the models designed for the Chinese market is the number “5" illuminated as standard in the area of the Hofmeister kink on the C-pillar. On the new BMW i5 its blue light pulsates discreetly and at a low frequency while the high-voltage battery is charging. With other engines the number lights up in white.

Luxurious ambience and intelligent technology in the interior.

The interior of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China is both modern and luxurious due to design features and technological innovations that were first presented in the new BMW 7 Series and the BMW iX. With the BMW Curved Display, the redesigned steering wheel, the BMW Interaction Bar and the further developed BMW iDrive with “QuickSelect”, intelligent interaction between human being and automobile is raised to a unique level in the BMW 5 Series segment. With Crafted Clarity glass applications for selected controls and a Titanium Bronze inlay for the passenger side instrument panel, the cockpit acquires an exclusive flair that is specifically oriented towards Chinese styling.

The ride experience at the rear is characterised by generous legroom and exclusive details. Another comfort feature adopted directly from the luxury sedans of the BMW 7 Series is the BMW Theatre Screen: with its 31.3-inch panoramic display, 8K resolution and 5G connectivity, it enables a high-quality video streaming experience during travel. In combination with the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, the BMW Theatre Screen transforms the rear of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 into a private cinema on wheels. Other features include 4-zone automatic climate control, a model logo embossed into the headrests, and seat surfaces with exclusive quilting and bicolour design.

Shenyang. After comprehensive construction work, the new extension to Plant #Dadong is ready to open. Owned by the joint venture ##BMW Brilliance## Automotive Ltd (BBA), the plant will simultaneously launch production of the ##BMW X5## with extended wheelbase in its new extension, exclusively for the Chinese market. A global success story, the X5 has so far only been made at the BMW Group’s US plant, in #Spartanburg. The new plant extension offers additional production capacity globally. With the completion of the construction, the #Dadong plant will follow the principles of the BMW iFACTORY. LEAN. GREEN. DIGITAL.

“Plant Dadong proves the strength of our team”, says Milan Nedeljković, BMW AG Board Member for Production: “Despite the challenges of the last three years, this complex construction project was completed fully on schedule. Our Chinese production sites are highly significant for the BMW Group. Last year almost one in every three BMW Group vehicles delivered around the world was manufactured in Shenyang.”

BMW Brilliance Plant Dadong is where the localisation of BMW vehicles in China first began. Today the plant is a pioneer of “Industry 4.0” car production and perfectly matches to BMW iFACTORY – the masterplan for the future of production. With the upgrade now complete, it offers fully flexible production of combustion-powered, plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles. This enhanced flexibility allows it to respond quickly to future market trends and the changing wishes of customers. Extending the plant, further focal points were digitalisation and sustainability, with innovative production technologies further reducing the plant’s environmental impact.

Besides the newly introduced BMW X5, Plant Dadong already produces the BMW 5 Series and X3 for the Chinese market. It is also the only facility to make the fully electric BMW iX3 for the world market. Together with BBA’s second facility, Plant Tiexi, it produced a combined total of more than 700,000 vehicles last year, making Shenyang not only the highest-volume manufacturing location of the BMW Group but also the largest premium manufacturer in China. Plant Tiexi produces the BMW 1 Series and 3 Series as well as the BMW X1 and X2. In the summer, the new plant, Plant Lydia will open, as the home of the new BMW i3, a fully electric 3 Series made exclusively for the Chinese market.

With the local Powertrain plant, which manufactures combustion engines as well as high-voltage batteries, Shenyang will be home to four production facilities. Extensive R&D work is also carried out there. Since 2010, the joint venture BBA has invested around 83 billion RMB in plants, facilities, projects and R&D activities in Shenyang.

Dadong – Plant extension with superlatives

In its upgraded form, Plant Dadong now has a footprint of 910,000 m² – the equivalent of about 125 football pitches. It accommodates a press shop, a bodyshop, a paintshop and a single roof integrated logistics and assembly building with two independent production lines. The bodyshop is equipped with the KUKA’s largest Titan robot with a loading capacity of 1.3 tonnes for underbody grabbing.

Further investments have also been made in sustainability. Nearly 80 percent of finished vehicles in Shenyang are wholly or partially transported by rail, hence with nine railway lines plant Dadong has the biggest railway station in all BMW Group plant structures. The press shop offers clean separation of scrap aluminium and steel for circularity, thereby making a major contribution to the further reduction of CO₂ emissions. The paintshop in Plant Dadong has already achieved zero fresh water consumption, and energy consumption efficiency is set to be increased even further.

Plant Dadong’s solar array has also been upgraded. This year, its 179,000m² of panels are expected to produce more than 21 MWh of energy from renewable sources. BBA Shenyang production base now owns 290,000 m² covered area of solar panel system, ranking No.1 in Liaoning Province. In addition, the plant has introduced further charging points in car parks for employees to charge their cars.

Digitalisation sets standards

Dadong has also received a digitalisation upgrade. Benefit-driven digital projects are implemented in five core areas: Digital Platform, Planning, Production, Logistics, and Campus. Data science, artificial intelligence and virtual planning are opening up new dimensions in automotive production, making it faster, more precise and more transparent and taking efficiency, flexibility, sustainability and quality to an entirely new level.

Process control and various parameter data are monitored and analysed in real-time throughout the entire production process chain, allowing potential problems to be detected quickly and resolved.

Munich. The BMW Group is stepping up its long-term involvement in China at the same time as continuing to expand production capacity for the globally successful BMW X5. An additional variant of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) developed and produced exclusively for the Chinese market will soon be rolling off the production line of the BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. Dadong plant in Shenyang following a major expansion of the joint venture’s facility. This will mark the first time that executive-segment BMW X models have been manufactured in China. Set to be available in China from April 2022, the BMW X5 xDrive30Li (fuel consumption combined: 8.9 l/100 km [31.7 mpg imp] as per WLTP; CO2 emissions combined: 213 g/km as per WLTP) and BMW X5 xDrive40Li (fuel consumption combined: 9.3 l/100 km [30.4 mpg imp] as per WLTP; CO2 emissions combined: 222 g/km as per WLTP) boast an exceptionally spacious rear passenger compartment and exclusive equipment features.

The BMW X5 will continue to be produced for the USA and export worldwide at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the US state of South Carolina, previously the sole manufacturing facility for the SAV. The capacity freed up as a result of the start of production in Shenyang will be immediately utilised to meet the high demand for the X models in the U.S. and across global markets. Plant Spartanburg is the largest facility in the BMW Group’s worldwide production network and the centre of competence for BMW X models. The plant produces the two best-selling BMW models in the US – the BMW X5 and X3 – among others and will also begin manufacture of the first high-performance hybrid electric model from BMW M GmbH, the BMW XM, towards the end of 2022.

With the introduction of the new models for China and production at theBMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. joint venture, the BMW Group is responding to the sustained growth in global demand for the BMW X5.

A team of engineers based at the BMW Group’s Munich HQ, as well as Spartanburg and Shenyang worked closely together on the development of the new BMW X5 xDrive30Li and BMW X5 xDrive40Li. Preparation for production was also a joint effort. The outcome is two variants of the SAV which combine the brand’s signature driving pleasure and the hallmark versatility of BMW X models with unrivalled space in the second row and commensurately high levels of passenger comfort.

In keeping with the motto “made in China, for China”, the BMW X5 model variants manufactured in Shenyang cater perfectly to the preferences of customers in the world’s largest car market. Their wheelbase has been extended by 130 millimetres compared to US-built BMW X5 models, all of this extra length is used to enhance seating comfort and legroom for second-row passengers. What is more, occupants in the rear are able to get in and out with exceptional ease thanks to the long rear doors. Standard specification for the new models has also been tailored precisely to the requirements of Chinese customers, comprising features such as specially designed comfort seats and four degrees of extra backrest tilt for the rear seats, a panoramic glass sunroof, ambient lighting as well as a bespoke M Aerodynamics package. Meanwhile, an electroplated finish for selected controls, speakers with perforated metal covers and a newly designed smartphone tray with inductive charging create a modern, premium ambience inside the cabin.

The specially tuned chassis technology, including electronically controlled dampers as standard and – optionally on the new BMW X5 xDrive40Li – two-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling, strikes the perfect balance between sportiness and comfort. There is a choice of two efficient petrol engines featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology (four-cylinder engine with new BMW X5 xDrive30Li, six-cylinder in-line engine with new BMW X5 xDrive40Li) whose power is directed to the road via an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

Munich. With the introduction of 48-volt mild hybrid technology in additional model series from summer 2020, BMW continues to consistently reduce fuel consumption and emissions in its current vehicle fleet. From July and August 2020, both efficiency and dynamic performance will be optimised in 51 models with the use of a particularly powerful starter generator and an additional battery. This also applies to the new in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines in the BMW 7 Series and in the BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7. Two additional engine variants are available for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé from July 2020 onwards. In numerous plug-in hybrid models, the new BMW eDrive Zone function will ensure an automatic switch to purely electric operating mode when entering inner city areas such as low emission zones.

The extension of the range of standard and optional equipment features in the areas of driver assistance systems, operation and networking contributes to an increase in driving pleasure. A new display and control system will be part of the standard trim in the new BMW 3 Series from July 2020. Among other things, BMW Operating System 7 enables use of the optional BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Furthermore, in the BMW 3 Series and other model series the range of functions of the optional Driving Assistant Professional is supplemented by Active Navigation Guidance and the Emergency Lane Assistant. With the optional smartphone integration, numerous current BMW models will enable use of Android Auto in addition to Apple CarPlay as of summer 2020.

Increased dynamic performance and reduced fuel consumption: 48-volt mild hybrid technology now in 51 BMW models.
From summer 2020 onwards, mild hybrid technology will be used in numerous additional BMW models to provide support and relief for the combustion engine. It consists of a 48-volt starter generator that enables particularly intensive braking energy recuperation along with an additional battery to store the electricity that is generated in this way. The 48-volt battery not only supplies the electrically operated vehicle functions, it also makes its energy available to generate additional drive power. For this purpose the current flows back to the starter generator, which now takes on the role of an electric drive. This reduces the load on the combustion engine, allowing it to run as often as possible in an efficiency-optimised load range. What is more, the generator creates an electric boost during acceleration. This instantly available additional output of 8 kW/11 hp supports dynamic power delivery during start and acceleration.

The 48-volt mild hybrid technology was first introduced in selected model variants of the BMW 5 Series in autumn 2019. This was followed by the BMW 3 Series models and several BMW X models. From July and August 2020, it will be available as standard in 37 further model variants of the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series and BMW 7 Series as well as the BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7. All in all it will ensure efficiency and dynamic performance in 51 current BMW models.

More power, less emissions: the new in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines with optimised BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology.
A new generation of in-line 6-cylinder engines will make its debut in numerous BMW model series in summer 2020. These highly efficient aluminium power units, each with a capacity of 3.0 litres, combine their extensively further developed BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology with the new 48-volt mild hybrid system, thereby achieving particularly significant progress within the context of BMW EfficientDynamics. In addition to optimised turbocharging systems, the latest version of common rail direct injection with piezo injectors ensures that both performance and efficiency are significantly increased in the new diesel engines. The injectors now transport fuel to the combustion chambers in up to ten injections per cycle and at a maximum pressure of 2,700 bar.

With maximum output increased by 15 kW/21 hp to 210 kW/286 hp, the new diesel engine for the models BMW 730d (combined fuel consumption: 4.9 – 4.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 128 – 123 g/km) and BMW 730d xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.2 – 5.0 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 138 – 133 g/km), BMW 730Ld (combined fuel consumption: 5.0 – 4.8 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 130 – 126 g/km), BMW 730Ld xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.3 – 5.1 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 139 – 133 g/km), BMW X3 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 5.6 – 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 147 – 137 g/km), BMW X4 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 5.6 – 5.1 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 146 – 136 g/km), BMW X5 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 – 5.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 164 – 150 g/km) und BMW X6 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 – 5.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 162 – 149 g/km) demonstrates a perceptibly enhanced temperament. Its particularly spontaneous power delivery is due to the multi-stage turbocharging used for the first time in this version of the in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine, along with variable turbine geometry for the low-pressure stage of the system. Increased by 30 to 650 Nm, the maximum torque of the new drive unit goes on stream at between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm – a power boost that especially results in enhanced sprint capacity. For example, the BMW 730d and the BMW 730d xDrive have improved their acceleration from zero to 100 km/h by 0.2 seconds each to 5.9 and 5.6 seconds respectively.

The new diesel engine now also used in the BMW 740d xDrive models BMW 740d xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.4 – 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 142 – 136 g/km), BMW 740Ld xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.4 – 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 143 – 137 g/km), BMW X3 M40d (combined fuel consumption: 6.0 – 5.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 157 – 148 g/km), BMW X4 M40d (combined fuel consumption: 5.9 – 5.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 156 – 147 g/km) und BMW X7 xDrive40d (combined fuel consumption: 6.6 – 6.4 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 173 – 167 g/km) generates even greater pulling power. Its multi-stage turbocharging system comprises a high-pressure and a low-pressure turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. As a result, a maximum torque of 700 Nm is delivered between 1,750 and 2,250 rpm. The engine reaches its peak output of 250 kW/340 hp at 4 400 rpm. In the BMW 740d xDrive, for example, this increased power helps achieve a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h that is also improved by 0.2 seconds to 5.0 seconds.

The two new engines are feature exhaust gas treatment technology with engine-related components consisting of a diesel oxidation catalytic converter and an SCR coating on the diesel particulate filter. For optimum reduction of nitrogen oxide (NO_X) emissions, a second dosage unit is additionally integrated at the outlet of the engine-related SCR system. As a result, the models powered by the new in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines meet the Euro 6d emissions standard.

Expansion of the model range for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé model range will be extended from July 2020 with the addition of two new engine variants. A new entry-level diesel engine and an additional all-wheel drive model variant are available for the sporty, elegant four-door model in the premium compact segment. The new BMW 218d Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 4.5 – 4.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 118 – 109 g/km) is powered by the latest version of a 4-cylinder diesel engine. The BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology in the 2.0-litre power unit now includes a two-stage turbocharging system as well as a likewise further developed common rail direct injection featuring solenoid valve injectors. The new engine delivers its maximum torque of 350 Nm between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm, reaching a maximum output of 110 kW/150 hp at 4,000 rpm. The new BMW 218d Gran Coupé accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual transmission and in 8.5 seconds with the optional 8-speed Steptronic transmission.

The second diesel engine available for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé delivers a maximum output of 140 kW/190 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. In the new BMW 220d xDrive Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 4.9 – 4.5 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 129 – 119 g/km) it is now combined with intelligent all-wheel drive and an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. This enables the new model variant to accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. Thanks to state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment including SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue injection, both new models meet the Euro 6d emissions standard.

Green light for BMW eDrive Zone: locally emissions-free travel in the city on an automated basis.
Innovative technology from the fields of electrification and digitalisation is combined in the new BMW eDrive Zone function available in the premium car manufacturer’s plug-in hybrid models. This globally unique digital service offers additional options for making optimum use of the capabilities of emissions-free driving. The BMW eDrive Zone function triggers an automatic switch to purely electric operating mode as soon as the vehicle enters selected urban areas such as low-emission zones.

BMW eDrive Zone will be a standard feature of all plug-in hybrid models of the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series and BMW 7 Series as well as the BMW X5. The digital service uses geo-fencing technology via GPS to identify designated areas. eDrive zones of this kind are currently designated in some 80 cities throughout Europe. When the service is activated, each available eDrive Zone on the navigation map is graphically highlighted in the Control Display: a message appears to inform the driver that the vehicle will automatically switch to electric driving mode as soon as it enters an eDrive Zone.

From summer 2020, the above-mentioned plug-in hybrid models will also be fitted with an integrated drive-ready sound for electric power as standard. This means that both starting and stopping the electric drive will be accompanied by a distinctive acoustic signal. In addition there has been an expansion of the range of preconditioning functions, which is also a standard feature. Depending on the equipment fitted, more functions will be available that can be activated remotely by smartphone, in addition to interior cooling and heating. In future it will also be possible to activate the seat climate control before the start of a journey, for example. In the same way it will be possible to include the seat, steering wheel, exterior mirror and rear window heating systems in the preconditioning for heating the interior, as well as heating of the cameras for the driver assistance systems.

BMW 3 Series Sedan and BMW 3 Series Touring now fitted with BMW Operating System 7 as standard.
In the new BMW 3 Series, the latest generation of the display and control system will be a standard feature as of summer 2020. Previously only used in conjunction with BMW Live Cockpit Professional, BMW Operating System 7 offers extensive individualisation and personalisation of the content shown on the Control Display. The standard BMW Live Cockpit now also includes a redesigned instrument cluster with a 5.1-inch digital display at its centre. BMW Live Cockpit Plus, like BMW Live Cockpit Professional, also includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. This digital companion enables intuitive operation of numerous vehicle functions via voice control (“Hey, BMW”). In the BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, BMW Operating System 7 will also be part of the optional BMW Live Cockpit Plus from July 2020.

The M sports seats are new to the range of optional extras for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan and the new BMW 3 Series Touring. They feature excellent lateral support, a wide range of adjustment options and headrests with embossed M logo. The M sports seats for driver and front passenger are available in conjunction with the Model M Sport equipment line as well as for the BMW M automobiles of the new BMW 3 Series. The choice of exterior colours for the new BMW 3 Series is supplemented by the variant Phytonic Blue metallic.

Increased comfort and safety: Driving Assistant Professional with additional functions.
The optional Driving Assistant Professional is a particularly comprehensive collection of driver assistance systems designed to optimise comfort and safety: it is being used by BMW to pave the way to automated driving in numerous current models. The focus is on the steering and lane guidance assistant, which will be enhanced with additional functions from summer 2020 in the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series and BMW 8 Series, in the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7, and in all variants of the BMW M5 and BMW M8.

The new Active Navigation Guidance indicates lane changes that are necessary in order to continue driving along the selected route when destination guidance is active. The driver can then carry out this operation conveniently with the aid of the lane change assistant. Emergency Lane Assistant is another new function: this automatically guides the vehicle to the ideal edge of its lane in congested situations on motorways. In addition, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function will in future include an adaptive distance control that adapts to the respective traffic situation and environmental conditions.

Further progress is also being made in the intelligent control of the Speed Limit Info system with No Passing Indicator. In all model variants of the BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series, BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, the BMW Z4, the BMW X5, the BMW X6 and the BMW X7 as well as the BMW M5, the BMW M8, the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M, road sign detection will in future additionally take into account speed limits that are restricted in time and only apply on certain days of the week. On days other, the speed limit derived from the navigation data is displayed.

Optimised smartphone integration: Android Auto can now also be used in the vehicle in addition to Apple CarPlay.
Depending on the model series, either standard or optional smartphone integration will enable use not just of Apple CarPlay but also of the digital services provided by Android Auto in numerous current BMW models as of summer 2020. This means that owners of a smartphone with the Android operating system can now access their familiar smartphone apps in the vehicle, just like users of an Apple iPhone. These include the digital voice assistant Google Assistant, the map service Google Maps, music streaming services such as Spotify and Amazon Music, and the messaging service WhatsApp.

The systems are integrated directly in the vehicle's display and control system via a wireless LAN connection between the respective smartphone and the vehicle. Here, the driver can view all the important information from the apps on the Control Display and also navigation directions in the instrument cluster and the optional Head-Up Display.

BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series with optimised Integral Active Steering.
Sporty flair and ride comfort in the BMW 7 Series luxury sedans and the luxury sports cars of the BMW 8 Series benefit from Integral Active Steering. The optional suspension system combines a variable rack and pinion ratio on the front axle with selective co-steering of the rear wheels. Even at particularly low speeds of less than 3 km/h, the rear wheels are now countersteered. This gives the models of the BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series additional manoeuvrability when moving slowly in and out of parking spaces or passing through narrow gaps.

In addition, the BMW 7 Series will be available from July 2020 in the new exterior paint finish Phytonic Blue metallic and the BMW Individual paint finish Frozen Bluestone metallic. A fresh touch of luxury ambience is added to the interior with the BMW Individual leather steering wheel as well as the new version of the BMW Individual Merino full leather trim in the colour combination Smoke White/Night Blue/Black.

Extended Business Package for the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer, new body finishes for the BMW i3 and numerous other models
The Business Package available for the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer provides enhanced comfort and driving pleasure in city traffic as well as on lengthier trips. From July 2020 onwards it also includes Real Time Traffic Information. Another new addition to the range is the body finish in Cashmere Silver metallic, which is also available for the BMW X1. The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer will also offered in Phytonic Blue metallic and Misano Blue metallic in future.

New body finishes are available for numerous other models, too. Phytonic Blue metallic and Sunset Orange metallic versions of the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé will be on offer from July 2020. The body finish Phytonic Blue metallic will also be available for the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7 as of August 2020. What is more, the BMW X5 and BMW X6 can be fitted with the new Carbon Fibre interior trim finishers and M Carbon exterior mirror caps in conjunction with the M sports package.

The purely electrically powered models BMW i3 (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) and BMW i3s (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 14.6 – 14.0 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) will be available from summer 2020 in the new body finish Blue Ridge Mountain with accentuations in Frozen Grey metallic.

Meanwhile new BMW Individual body finishes are available for the model variants of the high-performance sports car BMW M8. For the BMW M8 Series Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 10.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 242 g/km*) and the BMW M8 Convertible (combined fuel consumption: 10.8 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 246 g/km), the Ametrin metallic variant is now newly available. For both models and for the BMW M8 Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 10.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 244 g/km), the versions Bluestone metallic, Frozen Brands Hatch Grey metallic and Frozen Motegi Red metallic are likewise available.

* All new models available from start of production in July or August 2020

Shanghai. The BMW Group today celebrated the world premiere of the striking new BMW 7 Series in Shanghai, China. The choice of location for the event underlined the significance of the Chinese market for the company’s new flagship model: in 2018, 44% of global BMW 7 Series sales were made to customers in China (ca. 24,500 units). With the current ongoing launch of a whole range of new models, including the BMW 8 Series range and the BMW X7, today’s event was also an opportunity to showcase the BMW Group’s new luxury line-up. China will be a key market for these luxury vehicles.

Speaking at the event, Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG and his two colleagues Nicolas Peter, Board Member for Finance and Pieter Nota, Board Member for Sales and Brand BMW, also underlined the wide-ranging strategic importance of China for every aspect of the company. China has been the BMW Group’s biggest single sales market since 2013, and the country is also home to the company’s most extensive R&D and production operations anywhere outside Germany.

China accounts for a quarter of BMW & MINI sales

The Shenyang-built seventh-generation BMW 3 Series is set to be one of 25 new BMW Group models due to be launched in China in 2019. China accounted for a quarter of all BMW & MINI customer deliveries in 2018 and with total sales of 639,953 vehicles, last year achieved a 7.7% sales increase. Speaking at today’s event in Shanghai, Harald Krüger confirmed, “In 2019, we are aiming for further solid sales growth in China. The locally-produced BMW X3 will be our main growth driver, in addition to the many new models we will be introducing throughout the year. China is a very important strategic market for us, for sales, innovation and production, now and in the future.”

Seventh model to be localised in China

The Chinese city of Shenyang is home to the BMW Group’s biggest production base outside Germany, with two existing manufacturing plants and an engine plant. Construction work is underway at Plant Tiexi which will double the size of that facility. In Shanghai today, it was announced that the BMW X2 will later this year become the seventh BMW model to go into production in China. This decision was taken in response to demand for the BMW X2, increasing supply of this new Sports Activity Vehicle in addition to those built in Germany at Plant Regensburg. This move will further strengthen the competitiveness of the company’s SAV offering in China, following localisation last year of the BMW X3 and in addition to the locally produced BMW X1. From 2020, the fully-electric BMW iX3 will also roll off the production line at Plant Dadong, its sole production location, and be exported from China to markets worldwide. Both plants are currently undergoing extensive remodelling and expansion measures - once the upgrade and extension is completed, further models could be localised as the total capacity is increased gradually to 650,000 units, thereby creating 5,000 new jobs.

All these manufacturing plants, including the engine plant and battery assembly facility, are operated by the joint venture BMW Brilliance. Last year, the production of BMW vehicles in Shenyang grew by 24% to more than 490,000 units. The joint venture has been such a success, the contract is due to be extended until 2040. In this context, the BMW Group is planning to increase its share in the Joint Venture to 75 percent – a clear sign of the company’s belief in China’s continuing growth.

Crucial role in ACES development

In recent months, the BMW Group has opened two new R&D centres in Beijing and in Shanghai. They will play a crucial part in the company’s corporate strategy NUMBER ONE>NEXT, as they will make a significant contribution to innovations in the four major innovation fields know as ACES (Autonomous, Connected, Electrified, Services/Shared). “These four areas are at the centre of our strategy for future success,” said Harald Krüger. “With our two new research and development facilities in China, we want to tap even more into the huge potential of this market, developing technologies and products here which will be of real benefit to customers globally, as we strive to strengthen our position as the world’s leading premium automotive manufacturer,” Krüger continued.

BMW Group was the first non-Chinese automotive manufacturer to receive an autonomous driving road test license in China. Given the complexity of the Chinese road network, lessons learned in China will be invaluable in other markets as the BMW Group moves forward in developing key future autonomous technology. To date, BMW China has completed tens of thousands of kilometres of road tests and hundreds of thousands of kilometres in simulations. The company will also take a seat on the board of the Baidu Apollo automotive driving initiative.

Connectivity plays a major role in China, and the BMW Connected app is already used by over 1.5 million Chinese customers. Now, the app has been linked to the Chinese connected eco-system, thanks to a series of co-operations with Alibaba, Baidu and Tencent. In addition, the BMW Group will be the first premium carmaker to seamlessly integrate Alibaba Tmall Genie, the intelligent voice assistant from Alibaba A.I. Labs, into its cars, with the service becoming available later this year.

China is the world’s biggest market for electrified mobility and BMW is the country’s most popular premium New Energy Vehicle (NEV) brand. The company offers a total of six electrified models in China and sold over 23,000 battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in 2018. The BMW Group was the first premium automotive manufacturer to establish a high voltage battery assembly facility in China and is also the only premium manufacturer that has its own NEV dealer network, with over 330 sales and service outlets in more than 130 cities across China. To further support drivers of electrified vehicles, with its ChargeNow services the BMW Group offers more than 80,000 charging pillars in more than 150 cities.

In the increasingly important field of digitalised mobility services, at the end of last year the BMW Group was the first non-Chinese company to be awarded a Ride-Hailing licence. The service is based in Chengdu, one of the largest Ride-Hailing hubs in the world, and runs with a fleet of 200 BMW 5 Series, half of which are plug-in hybrids. The Ride-Hailing service will complement the BMW Group’s existing ReachNow Car-Sharing operation, run in partnership with the local mobility company EVCARD and using a fleet of 100 BMW i3 vehicles.

Munich. The BMW 7 Series has landed a major Hollywood role alongside Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence in Red Sparrow, the new spy thriller from 20th Century Fox Film, which will open in cinemas on 2 March.

Jennifer Lawrence plays Dominika Egorova, a prima ballerina with Russia’s world-renowned Bolshoi Ballet. When she suffers a career-ending injury, Dominika and her mother are facing a bleak and uncertain future. That is why she finds herself manipulated into becoming the newest recruit for Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people like her to use their bodies and minds as weapons. After the training process, she emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow the program has ever produced. Dominika must now reconcile the person she was with the power she now commands, with her own life and everyone she cares about at risk, including an American CIA agent (Joel Edgerton) who tries to convince her he is the only person she can trust.

The cast also includes British actor and Oscar-winner Jeremy Irons as a two-faced Russian general; Oscar-nominated actress Charlotte Rampling as chief instructor of the Sparrow School; Matthias Schoenaert as head of the Russian Secret Service and Mary-Louise Parker as a U.S. informant.

The BMW 7 Series accompanies Dominika on her journey from elegant and graceful prima ballerina to self-assured secret agent. The luxury sedan reappears at key moments in the plot, including the scene where Dominika is driven to the secret Sparrow School for the first time. The drive through the snow-covered Russian landscape, assisted by the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system, symbolises the transition from Dominikas’s past to her mysterious, but exciting future.

The BMW 7 Series Sedan has made numerous appearances in the glamorous world of secret agents and spy thrillers. Who could forget the legendary performance of the BMW 750iL in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, which caused a sensation back in 1997, with a range of new technology like a remote control via touchpad phone. In general, BMW vehicles have a long been featured on the big screen, including in iconic films like Mission: Impossible and the James Bond franchises. BMW is also a long-standing partner of the Directors’ Guild of America, whose annual DGA awards are highly respected in Hollywood and across the film industry.

As part of the cooperation with 20th Century Fox Film, BMW will be promoting Red Sparrow widely through its own digital channels and print campaign.

The film was shot on location in London, Budapest and Vienna between January and April 2017 and was directed by Francis Lawrence. Red Sparrow will debut in cinemas on 2 March.

Munich. From the spring of 2017, the new BMW 5 Series, the sportiest and most innovative business sedan in its segment, will also set new standards in terms of efficiency. The new BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition impresses with a combined fuel consumption level of 4.3 to 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres (combined CO2 emission level: 114 – 102 g/km). Also, from March 2017, groundbreaking innovations in the areas of networking and operating, now being presented for the first time in the BMW 5 Series, will find their way into further model series – the digital parking space search service On-Street Parking Information and the live tile arrangement of the menu on the Control Display.

With a further extended range of driver assistance systems, the BMW 7 Series is making further advancements on the way to automated driving. The spectrum now also includes, amongst other things, the Lane Departure Assistant, ActiveAssist Collision Avoidance, Cross-Traffic and Wrong-Way Driving Alert as well as the Remote 3D View function. From the spring of 2017, BMW 6 Series models will underpin their exclusive and sporty aura with attractive innovations included in the range of special equipment options. The Digital Charging Service, an innovative feature for convenient and economical charging of the high-voltage battery, will become available exclusively for BMW i and BMW iPerformance automobiles. From March 2017, new and exceedingly high-quality options will be added to the range of special equipment for the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 4 Series as well as for the models BMW X5 and BMW X6.

BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition: greater driving pleasure, less CO2. 
As from March 2017, the driving pleasure that is characteristic of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will be combined with the lowest fuel consumption and emission levels in this vehicle segment. The new BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition is powered by a 2-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, delivering a maximum power output of 140 kW/190 hp and a peak torque of 400 Newton metres available between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. The Sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and achieves a combined fuel consumption of between 4.3 and 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emission levels of between 114 and 102 grams per kilometres (figures as per EU test cycle, depending on selected tyre size). The power unit of the BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition features, inter alia, a turbo charger mounted on anti-friction bearings, high pressure exhaust gas recirculation, a map-controlled oil pump and further developed Common Rail direct injection technology, the solenoid injectors of which ensure precise fuel dosing with a maximum pressure of 2,000 bar.

In addition to the optimised efficiency of both the engine and the standard 8-speed Steptronic transmission, enhanced aerodynamic characteristics as well as the Sedan’s greatly reduced weight vs. its predecessor also contribute towards achieving the favourable fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels. Moreover, in order to optimise emission behaviour, the BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition is equipped with BMW BluePerformance technology, which in addition to the particulate filter, an oxidation catalyst and a NOX storage catalyst, also features an SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue injection technology reducing nitrogen oxide emissions even further.

On-Street Parking Information in further BMW models and available for additional towns and cities.
Starting in March 2017, thanks to intelligent networking, drivers will be provided in a large number of BMW models not only with real-time information on the traffic situation, but will also receive assistance in finding a parking space in major urban areas. The BMW ConnectedDrive Service Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI), which is available in conjunction with the navigation system Professional, will also be complemented by the unique On-Street Parking Information function. Similar to the RTTI feature, this digital service uses intelligent networking to assess the availability of free road-side parking spaces from both pre-stored and current data. The calculated probability of finding a free parking space at the destination is displayed to the driver by means of coloured markings on the navigation map depicted on the Control Display.

In future, the On-Street Parking Information service will make finding a parking space far easier in as many as ten German cities. In addition to Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt and Stuttgart, the availability of parking spaces will also be analysed in real time in Nuremberg, Bremen and Hanover as from March 2017. The function, which is being featured for the first time in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, is now available for all current models with the exception of the BMW X1, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer.

Even more intuitive: Navigation system Professional with animated buttons arranged as tiles.
The latest innovations for the display and control concept, which made their debut in the new BMW 5 Series, will be available for further series as from March 2017. In conjunction with the navigation system Professional, the Control Display of the iDrive system will, thanks to a new enhanced graphic representation, facilitate even more intuitive operation in the BMW 7 Series and BMW 6 Series as well as in all variants of the BMW M6. The on-board monitor displays menus in the form of horizontally arranged buttons with a tile structure. These six buttons, the order of which can be individually configured by the driver, are displayed in the main menu on two sides of the screen. This ensures more convenient and faster access to the desired content. A new menu option is “Messages”, allowing access to incoming text messages and e-mails as well as information on the vehicle’s operating condition.

These functions, which are available using the menu selection, are symbolised by animated graphics in live mode. For example, in the overview and by means of a displayed map section, the navigation menu button already displays the route the vehicle is currently travelling on, whilst the entertainment menu graphics show the title of the song currently playing, including album cover, or the name of the selected radio station.

BMW 7 Series with additional driver assistance systems and Remote 3D View.
From the spring of 2017, there will be an even broader choice of driver assistance systems to ensure even greater driving pleasure, comfort and safety in 7 Series models. From March 2017, the systems will be included in the optional equipment package Driving Assistant Plus. They offer the driver effective assistance in many different situations, leading the way to automated driving. For example, the Steering and Lane Guidance Assistant being presented in the luxury sedans for the first time will be complemented by the Lane Change Assistant, which can be used when driving on motorways and other roads with separated directional carriageways. At speeds of between 70 and 180 km/h, the driver can initiate a lane change by holding the indicator lever in the one-touch position. The system sensors then analyse the situation on the neighbouring carriageway. If they detect that this lane is clear and there are no vehicles approaching at a high speed, the steering assistant conveniently helps the driver to change lanes.  

A further addition to the range of Driving Assistant Plus functions is the ActiveAssist Collision Avoidance system. Should a rapid lane change become necessary in order to avoid a suddenly appearing obstacle, it provides steering assistance at speeds of up to 160 km/h. The Cross Traffic Alert function, also included in the equipment package as from March, provides visual and acoustic signals if the traffic signs identified by the stereo camera should indicate that the driver has overlooked a road with right of way. The new Driving Assistant Plus features are complemented by the Wrong-Way Driving Alert feature. This system analyses navigation data in order to provide information on hazardous situations. It intervenes when the vehicle is driving in the wrong direction into one-way streets, roundabouts or motorway entrances.

In conjunction with the Surround View system, a feature that provides assistance with a combination of camera images taken from several different perspectives when the vehicle is manoeuvring in tricky situations, drivers of a BMW 7 Series will in future also have access to the Remote 3D View feature, the Surround View system of which provides them with permanent access to a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its surroundings, this being transmitted to their smartphone via the BMW Connected feature.

New option for the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 4 Series: Multifunctional instrument display.
From March 2017, a novel feature in the field of display technology will also ensure an even more intensive driving experience in BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series models, for which the multifunctional instrument display will be optionally available. The fully digital TFT colour display featuring black panel technology for the cockpit provides driving-related information in an individually selectable design. The colour scheme, graphic representation and choice of contents vary according to the driving mode selected via the Driving Experience Control button.

In COMFORT mode, the display shows a conventional image of the four round instruments using the corresponding graphics. A zoom function highlights the respective driving speed and engine speed. In ECO PRO mode, additional information on current fuel efficiency replaces the rev counter. In SPORT mode, the current speed is displayed digitally in the form of a large central figure, whilst the selected gear is indicated in the centre of the rev counter.

BMW 6 Series with distinctive accents for the exterior and interior.
From the spring of 2017, new and attractive special equipment features will also be available for the BMW 6 Series. These options, which are on offer exclusively for the BMW 6 Series Coupe, the BMW 6 Series Convertible and the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe, underscore the sporting character of the three luxury class models. The choice of body colours will be complemented by the brand-new variant Sonic Speed Blue metallic. In conjunction with the M Sports package, new 20-inch, M bicolour light alloy wheels boasting an M-specific double spoke design will be available, including mixed tyres and emergency running characteristics as well as interior trims in a carbon fibre look.

Comfortable, eco-friendly, cost efficient: Digital Charging Service for BMW i and BMW iPerformance automobiles.
The BMW i brand has become a pioneer in the field of sustainable individual mobility, not only thanks to groundbreaking vehicle concepts and drive technologies, but also with numerous innovative services. The latest innovation in this area is the Digital Charging Service for intelligent charging of the high-voltage battery featured in BMW i and BMW iPerformance automobiles. So the BMW Group is the first carmaker to offer a system that conveniently helps the driver to make use of favourable electricity tariffs or a high proportion of self-generated solar energy during the charging process.

In order to achieve best possible charging cost efficiency, the BMW Digital Charging Service takes into account not only tariffs with a dynamically varying price in the daytime, but also those that include predetermined highest and lowest prices. As a result, it is possible, for example, to take maximum advantage of particularly favourable overnight rates.

In conjunction with the new BMW i Wallbox Connect, the Digital Charging Service can also optimise the use of electricity from a domestic photovoltaic system. In this case, the amount of locally generated solar electricity is predicted based on the system’s performance data and the current weather forecast. Using this data, it is also possible to determine the proportion of solar electricity that is not consumed in the home at the time of being produced and can, therefore, be used for completely emission-free mobility. As a result, fully electric and/or hybrid vehicles are integrated as best possible into the domestic environment and the customer’s individual energy concept.

The BMW Digital Charging Service automatically schedules the start and finish of each charging process with a view to best possible cost efficiency or maximum proportion of green electricity respectively. In the process, the charging schedule always ensures that the vehicle has the maximum battery capacity at the desired departure time and that the interior is also fully air-conditioned. The unique service is an integral part of BMW ConnectedDrive Services available for all BMW i and BMW iPerformance automobiles.

New light alloy wheels for the BMW X5 and the BMW X6.
In the spring of 2017, the range of optional equipment available ex factory for the models BMW X5 and BMW X6 will also include for the

first time 21-inch light alloy wheels previously only available exclusively from the Original BMW Accessory range. The M light alloy wheels boasting a double spoke design and bicolour look with burnished spokes come with mixed tyres with emergency running characteristics. They are available in conjunction with the M Sports Package for all model variants with the exception of the BMW X5 sDrive25d, BMW X5 xDrive25d and the BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance.

BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M now with the navigation package ConnectedDrive as standard.
As from the spring of 2017, the range of standard equipment for the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M will be supplemented by the navigation package ConnectedDrive, also featuring telephony with wireless charging. It includes among other options the navigation system Professional, a smartphone holder with which inductive charging of a mobile phone is possible, the RTTI service including On-Street Parking Information, a WiFi hotspot, ConnectedDrive Services, Concierge Services and Remote Services.

Munich. An impressive spread of innovations mark the new BMW 7 Series luxury sedan out from the crowd. The spread of new features runs from a Carbon Core body structure and BMW eDrive technology in the three BMW iPerformance models to BMW gesture control and Remote Control Parking. And now another new arrival has joined the fray. The world’s most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine is making its debut in the BMW 750d xDrive and BMW 750Ld xDrive (fuel consumption combined: 5.9 – 5.7 l/100 km [47.9 – 49.6 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 154 – 149 g/km), which come as standard with intelligent all-wheel drive. The new unit generates maximum output of 294 kW/400 hp and peak torque of 760 Newton metres (560 lb-ft).

The new 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine was developed on the basis of the BMW Group’s latest generation of power units. Its BMW TwinPower Turbo technology includes multi-stage turbocharging with four turbochargers and common-rail direct injection, the latest update of which generates maximum pressure in excess of 2,500 bar. These and other technological highlights allow significant improvements to the already exceptional power delivery, pulling power and efficiency achieved by the outgoing engine. The new BMW 750d xDrive accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h / 62 mph in 4.6 seconds (BMW 750Ld xDrive: 4.7 seconds) – an improvement of 0.3 seconds over its predecessor. Much credit for this even sharper dynamic edge can go to a new form of multi-stage turbocharging, which now brings together four turbochargers in place of the previous three. This enables boost pressure to be built up even more quickly at lower engine speeds and therefore prompts incredibly swift responses to throttle applications from idle.

Top-level efficiency: engine output up 5 per cent, average fuel consumption down 11 per cent.

The new generation of the world’s most sportingly gifted six-cylinder diesel engine develops its maximum output of 294 kW/400 hp at 4,400 rpm. Its optimised performance characteristics are reflected most prominently in torque development that gathers pace rapidly and from low engine speeds. Indeed, the engine serves up over 450 Newton metres (332 lb-ft) of torque at just 1,000 rpm and puts its maximum 760 Newton metres (560 lb-ft) on tap between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm. The engine’s large and sustained wave of thrust and the eight-speed Steptronic transmission tuned to make the most of it together ensure that instant and ferocious bursts of pace can also be achieved under throttle inputs at higher speeds. The BMW 750d xDrive and BMW 750Ld xDrive have an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

Added to which, the most powerful diesel engine ever offered by BMW also stands apart with a balance of brawn and fuel economy unmatched by any rival in this engine segment. A 14 kW/19 hp (i.e. 5 per cent) increase in output and peak torque up by 20 Newton metres (15 lb-ft) are accompanied by a 11 per cent reduction in average fuel consumption and emissions over the predecessor model. The new BMW 750d xDrive and new BMW 750Ld xDrive record combined fuel consumption of between 5.9 and 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres (47.9 – 49.6 mpg imp), while CO2 emissions are 154–149 grams per kilometre (figures based on the EU test cycle, may vary depending on the tyre format specified).

Performing at its best under high pressure: new top-of-the-line diesel features numerous technological highlights – from cylinder head to exhaust treatment.

The new sporting king in the diesel ranks represents a masterful example of the engineering art and further evidence of the BMW Group’s outstanding expertise in drive system development. A host of innovative features in the engine’s construction have enabled the signature benefits of diesel engines in terms of power delivery and efficiency – underpinned by the principle of combustion under extremely high pressure – to be showcased at the highest level. Essential foundations had already been put in place in the development of the base engine, a member of the BMW Group’s latest generation of drive systems. Specific detail solutions address both the thermal and mechanical loads that come with extremely high outputs and the increase in maximum combustion pressure – from the previous engine’s 200 bar to 210 bar.

As with the outgoing unit, the cylinder head and crankcase are manufactured in a special high-pressure compression process. Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) ensure the aluminium castings are particularly strong. The assembly of the main bearing caps and cylinder head is based on a tie rod concept, complete with a central screw to give extra strength. Other special features include the now five-layer cylinder head gasket, cylinder bores with a twin-wire arc-sprayed coating and pistons made from an aluminium/silicon alloy with remelted bowl rims, bronze liners in the pin eyes and centrally controlled cooling.

The latest generation of common-rail direct injection technology takes care of the fuel supply. The piezo injectors, whose maximum injection pressure has been increased to over 2,500 bar, ensure extremely precise metering and fine atomisation of the fuel. As a result, the engine’s efficiency has increased and its emissions have been reduced. The exhaust treatment technology at work in the BMW 750d xDrive and BMW 750Ld xDrive includes not only a diesel particulate filter and NOX storage catalytic converter, which are positioned in a combined housing close to the engine, but also an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system with AdBlue injection.

Treading new ground: four turbochargers working together as a precisely coordinated team to deliver enhanced driving pleasure.

The effectiveness and performance characteristics of the new engine are determined largely by the first ever use of a fourth turbocharger and, above all, the precisely coordinated interplay of all the components in the turbocharging system. As with the outgoing engine, the performance-boosting flow of compressed air into the combustion chambers is generated by multi-stage turbocharging. The high-pressure stage revolves around two compact turbos with variable turbine geometry integrated into a single housing, while a single, very large low-pressure turbocharger has been replaced by two smaller – and therefore faster-responding – units. The latest-generation Digital Diesel Electronics (DDE) responsible for engine management adopt a precisely defined deployment strategy to coordinate the activity of the individual turbos, the position of the high-pressure system’s variable vanes, and the regulation of the change-over and bypass flaps, the exhaust gas butterfly valve, the wastegate and the intercooler in response to the operating situation and throttle inputs.

Generally speaking, the two low-pressure turbochargers and one of the two high-pressure turbos are permanently in action. Only under hard acceleration from idle will the two low-pressure turbochargers be bypassed by means of a flap control system. This allows boost pressure to be built up even more quickly. The second high-pressure turbocharger is brought into play at an engine speed of about 2,500 rpm.

Another new feature not present in the outgoing engine is exhaust gas recirculation for the low-pressure stage of the turbocharging system as well as the high-pressure stage. This measure increases the effectiveness of the turbochargers and therefore of the engine as a whole. In this way, levels of nitrogen oxide emissions under high loads are also reduced. To enhance efficiency, the engine also employs an indirect system of charge air cooling with higher capacity than that used by the outgoing engine, as well as additional compressor backplate cooling for the low-pressure turbochargers. Key to the latter is a separate low-temperature circuit – independent of the engine’s cooling system – which includes heat exchangers and an electrically operated coolant pump.

The BMW 750d xDrive and BMW 750Ld xDrive will be available from July 2016.

The “BMW Individual 7 Series THE NEXT 100 YEARS” is produced at the BMW Dingolfing plant in a limited quantity of 100 units. The vehicles feature exclusive BMW Individual equipment details created by a manufacturing process that is defined by uncompromising quality standards, traditional style consciousness, and handcrafted precision. The anniversary model’s prominent status is recognisable at first glance by the BMW Individual exterior colour Centennial Blue metallic and the handcrafted signet. The colour variant available exclusively for the 100 centennial models is attained by a particularly elaborate painting process that accentuates the sedan’s expressive design through outstanding brilliance and an intensive depth effect. Technology and design at the highest level also merge together in the forged 20-inch BMW Individual light-alloy wheels in V-spoke design that come in a bi-colour Silver/Ferric Grey look and with mixed tyres.

An exclusive, handcrafted signet bearing the lettering “THE NEXT 100 YEARS” adorns the B pillars, the interior strips above the glove compartment on the passenger side as well as the front and rear seat headrests. The unmistakable Montblanc icon, the Montblanc Meisterstück, comes with BMW design elements of the new Individual series: The surface structure of the Meisterstück Skeleton Fountain Pen is reminiscent of the quilted seat surfaces in a woven look featured by the BMW 7 Series centennial model. The transparent elements of the fountain pen come in the BMW Individual colour Centennial Blue metallic also chosen as the automobile’s exterior colour. The choice of engine variants represents tradition, maximum performance and advancement in which the BMW Group’s worldwide unparalleled development skills in the field of drive technology is reflected. Moreover, the engines offered for the BMW 7 Series centennial models can be combined with the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive, whose electronically controlled, variable and constant on-demand power distribution between the front and rear wheels provide for supreme traction, optimized directional stability and enhanced dynamics when cornering at high speeds.

The new eight-cylinder engine featured in the “BMW Individual 750Li THE NEXT 100 YEARS” (with xDrive) combines the latest version of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with a construction principle that has a particularly long-standing tradition among power units designed for luxury sedans of the BMW brand. As early as in 1954, the BMW 502 was presented with a V8 power unit featuring a then revolutionary aluminium construction and a power output of 100 hp. The 4.4-litre engine delivers a maximum power output of 330 kW/450 hp and maximum torque of 650 Nm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h can be completed in 4.7 seconds (0–100 km/h: 4.5 s). As an epitome of supremacy, highest performance and prestige, the twelve-cylinder power unit of the “BMW Individual M760Li xDrive Model V12 Excellence THE NEXT 100 YEARS” completes the choice of engines for the BMW 7 Series centennial model. The V12 engine is also of historic significance for the BMW 7 Series. In 1987, the top-of-the-range version of the second-generation BMW 7 Series was the first twelve cylinder production model made in Germany during the post-war era. The 6.6-litre, V12 power unit of the latest generation, which also features BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, delivers a maximum power output of 448 kW/610 hp* and enables the BMW M760Li xDrive to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds*. The exclusive range of equipment features for the “BMW Individual 7 Series THE NEXT 100 YEARS” is designed for an unmatched level of luxury and driving pleasure in a premium automobile. The experience of driving a BMW 7 Series is defined by a characteristic balance between sportiness and ride comfort. The chassis technology comprises a 2-axle air suspension including automatic self-levelling and Dynamic Damper Control. A further enhancement of comfort, dynamics and supremacy is achieved with Integral Active Steering (optional extra on some models) and the Executive Drive Pro system with active roll stabilization as well as the data-based predictive function. In addition to the COMFORT, SPORT and ECO PRO settings, it is now also possible for the first time to activate the ADAPTIVE mode by means of the Driving Experience Control switch. In this setting, the set-up adapts to the current driving style and route characteristics. Unique composite material made of CFRP, aluminium and steel developed as part of BMW EfficientLightweight for the new generation of the luxury sedan receives the world's leading award for innovations in body construction with a new record score.

Automobile experts from all over the world are in agreement: the Carbon Core for the body structure of the new BMW 7 Series is currently the ultimate benchmark. At the 17th Global Car Body Benchmarking Conference, the construction created using an innovative composite consisting of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), aluminium and steel received the EuroCarBody Award 2015. The body of the new BMW luxury sedans was given a rating of 41.87 out of 50 possible points - the best score ever to be obtained in this competition. The EuroCarBody Award has been announced at the annual conference of experts every year since 2002 and is regarded as the world's most important award for innovations in car body construction.

The Carbon Core used for the body structure is the central element of the BMW EfficientLightweight Technology that was applied particularly consistently in the development of the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series. For the first time in a volume-production automobile, a composite of CFRP, aluminium and super high-strength steels was created which increases rigidity and stiffness in the passenger cell while at the same time significantly reducing the vehicle weight. CFRP is applied here in hybrid construction with super high-strength steels for the structural elements. This allows adaptation of the sheet metal parts in the area of the B columns, for example, thereby saving weight.

In designing the body with Carbon Core, expertise was used from the development of BMW i automobiles, whose passenger cells are made entirely of CFRP. The BMW Group has a level of know-how and experience in the industrial application of CFRP which is unique in the automotive sector. With this innovative composite construction, BMW has once again established an innovative use for CFRP in the large-scale serial production of motor vehicles.

In addition, not only is the engine compartment lid of the new BMW 7 Series made of aluminium but also the doors. All in all, these and other BMW EfficientLightweight measures make the luxury sedans of the new BMW 7 Series up to 130 kilograms lighter than their respective predecessor models, despite the fact that they are fitted with a considerably extended range of comfort and safety features. This puts their weight at the level of the third generation of the BMW 7 Series launched in 1994. Consistent lightweight construction enables an almost perfectly balanced 50 : 50 axle load distribution and also allows the centre of gravity to be lowered. This benefits the driving dynamics and ride comfort of the new BMW 7 Series as well as its efficiency.

The EuroCarBody 2015 conference in Bad Nauheim, Hesse, was attended by more than 550 car body construction experts from 24 countries, who discussed innovations and pioneering concepts in the areas of development and production. In addition to specialist talks and discussions, the event mainly focused on selecting the most important new developments in body construction. In its bid for the EuroCarBody Award 2015, the new BMW 7 Series was up against eight other recent innovations from the international automotive markets. In the combined assessment of the jury and auditorium, the Carbon Core body scored particularly well in the disciplines of material concept, development, construction design and customer benefit.

With the introduction of additional drive and equipment variants for the new BMW 7 Series, the new BMW X1 and the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer in the autumn of 2015, BMW is offering further enhanced diversity within its model range. Immediately following the start of its market launch, a second diesel engine will be on offer for the latest generation of the BMW 7 Series, with the V8 power unit now also available in conjunction with rear-wheel drive. Likewise, the model range for the new BMW X1 will be complemented directly after its market launch by the introduction of a three-cylinder petrol engine of the BMW Group’s latest engine generation and a further four-wheel drive variant. Starting in November 2015, two additional model variants of the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will also go on sale.

Parallel to the extension of the drive portfolio, the range of optional extras available for the BMW 7 Series will be supplemented by a further highlight. As from November 2015, it will be possible to equip the first model variants of the luxury sedan with the world’s first remote controlled parking feature. The new BMW X1 is – in addition to the basic model, the models Advantage, Sport Line and xLine – now also available in an M Sport version. Furthermore, an optimised version of the Parking Assistant, which thanks to additional sensors guarantees even more precise manoeuvring in parking spaces, will be on offer as from the autumn of 2015.

With the new BMW 7 Series, BMW has redefined what an exclusive, luxurious driving experience looks like in contemporary, pioneering form. Groundbreaking technologies in the areas of lightweight design, powertrains, chassis, operating systems, intelligent connectivity and interior ambience underline its mission to bring together unbeatable driving pleasure and long-distance comfort in a luxury sedan. The handing over of the baton from one generation to the next at the top end of BMW’s model line-up sees the brand presenting a raft of innovations unmatched by any of its rivals.

Key factors in enhancing dynamics, efficiency, comfort and safety while on the move are the use of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the body structure, engines from the BMW Group’s new generation of power units, the plug-in hybrid system in the new BMW 740e, the Executive Drive Pro active chassis system, the Driving Experience Control switch with ADAPTIVE mode and BMW Laserlight. Maximising well-being in the rear compartment, meanwhile, are the Executive Lounge feature with massage function and Vitality Programme, the Sky Lounge Panorama glass roof, the Welcome Light Carpet, the Ambient highlight and a smartphone holder with inductive charging station. The design of the new BMW 7 Series provides an authentic showcase for the car’s character. Harmonious proportions, a strongly controlled surface design and precise lines point to the stylistic confidence, assured dynamics and exclusive elegance at work here. The optimised balance of driving pleasure and long-distance comfort finds clear expression in the unmistakable aura of the luxury sedan, which is available in both standard and long wheelbase variants.

Characteristic features of the interior include generous levels of space accentuated by its horizontal surfaces and lines, the driver-focused cockpit design, the fusion of exquisite materials and precision craftsmanship and the sophisticated functionality of the control and display elements. The M Sport package, the design Pure Excellence package and a BMW Individual Design Composition will be available for the new BMW 7 Series from launch. They underline the car’s dynamic ability, exclusive elegance and luxurious ambience to great effect, and satisfy the diverse expectations of customers around the world.

BMW EfficientLightweight: Carbon Core reduces weight by as much as 130 kilograms.
BMW EfficientLightweight helps to reduce the weight of the new BMW 7 Series models by up to 130 kilograms compared to their previous-generation counterparts. At the centre of it all is the body structure with Carbon Core, a product of the transfer of technology from the development of BMW i cars. The new BMW 7 Series is the first car in its segment in which industrially manufactured CFRP combines with steel and aluminium. The intelligent body concept uses this mixed-materials approach to increase the strength and rigidity of the passenger cell while at the same time significantly reducing vehicle weight.

New-generation straight-six engines.
The new BMW 7 Series is available with an extensively updated V8 engine and six-cylinder in-line variants from the BMW Group’s latest generation of power units. All the engines link up as standard with the likewise further developed eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system, which can be specified as an option, also operates more effectively than ever.

Plug-in hybrid BMW 740e features BMW eDrive technology.
The addition to the model range of the BMW 740e sees the arrival in the luxury sedan segment of BMW eDrive technology which was first introduced in BMW i cars. The plug-in hybrid model, which will be launched in long-wheelbase BMW 740Le form and bear the BMW 740Le xDrive badge when specified with intelligent all-wheel drive, is powered by a four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor, which together generate total system output of 240 kW/326 hp. The BMW 740e records combined fuel consumption of 2.1 litres per 100 kilometres (134.5 mpg imp) as calculated in the EU test cycle for hybrid vehicles and a combined electric power consumption of 12.5 kWh per 100 kilometres. CO2 emissions stand at 49 grams per kilometre (provisional). The electric drive system, supplied with energy by a high-voltage lithium-ion battery, provides a noticeable boost for the combustion engines when dynamic acceleration is required. Moreover, the BMW eDrive technology enables all-electric and therefore locally emission-free driving at speeds of up to 120 km/h (75 mph) and with a range of up to 40 kilometres (25 miles).

Dynamics and ride comfort made to measure – and to the highest standard.
Sophisticated, precision-honed chassis technology and additional chassis control systems – fitted as standard or available as an option – enhance both the dynamics of the new BMW 7 Series and its ride quality. At the same time, the balance between these two facets of driving pleasure reaches a level without parallel in the luxury sedan segment. Standard specification includes 2-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling and Dynamic Damper Control.

Further enhancing comfort, dynamics, poise and assurance are the latest update of the Integral Active Steering system, which can now be specified in conjunction with BMW xDrive, and the Executive Drive Pro system with active roll stabilisation and data-based predictive function, which is available for the first time. Electromechanical anti-roll bars reduce body roll under dynamic cornering and the active chassis control system adapts the dampers’ responses to ruts and bumps in the road.

The latest wave of innovations offer drivers greater freedom when selecting the perfect set-up for their car; they can opt for even sportier handling or further improved ride comfort, or use the high-efficiency ECO PRO mode. ADAPTIVE mode can now also be activated via the newly designed Driving Experience Control switch. In this setting, the car set-up adapts to driving style and route characteristics.

Intuitive operation with touch display and BMW gesture control.
In the new BMW 7 Series the iDrive operating system’s monitor comes in touch display form for the first time. This means customers will also be able to operate the system in the same way as modern electronic devices. In addition to using the Controller to control the system in familiar style, its functions can also be selected and activated by touching the screen’s surface.

Another new addition to the iDrive system’s functionality is BMW gesture control, which is being introduced for the first time. Hand movements detected by a 3D sensor control infotainment functions in an extremely intuitive and user-friendly fashion. The gestures can be used for a number of functions, including controlling the volume in audio applications and accepting or rejecting incoming telephone calls. There is also the option of pairing a specific gesture with an individual choice of function. Also joining the fray is a new smartphone holder integrated into the centre console, which allows wireless, inductive charging for mobile phones for the first time in a car.

Luxury ambience with all the trimmings: Executive Lounge, Touch Command.
The BMW 750Li xDrive, BMW 740Li, BMW 730Ld and BMW 730Ld xDrive models specified with the optional Executive Lounge, which redefines personal well-being in a luxury car, offer levels of comfort a class apart. This equipment package includes Automatic air conditioning with 4-zone control, Electrically adjustable comfort seats with massage function in the rear and Active seat ventilation for all seats, plus the optional Executive Lounge Seating, Executive Lounge rear console and Rear-seat entertainment Experience with BMW Touch Command. The massage function now also includes the Vitality Programme, which allows rear passengers to engage in active physical exercise for recuperation purposes. The Executive Lounge Seating option increases comfort in the rear seat behind the front passenger seat, which can slide forward by an additional 90 millimetres and has an electrically extendable footrest integrated into its backrest. The rear passenger can unwind into an extremely relaxing position thanks to a backrest which can recline impressively close to the horizontal position.

The Executive Lounge rear console houses a fold-out table, additional cupholders and the Touch Command system. This removable 7-inch tablet computer allows the user to control the infotainment and comfort functions available in the rear of the new BMW 7 Series and can also be used to play back external audio and video files, as a games console or to surf the internet.

Atmospheric touches: Ambient light, Sky Lounge Panorama glass roof.
The exclusive ambience inside the new BMW 7 Series is also enhanced by a precisely arranged lighting design. The Ambient light option now includes the Welcome Light Carpet, which provides eye-catching illumination of the area around the car doors. Another unique feature is the Ambient highlight for the long-wheelbase versions of the new BMW 7 Series, which bathes the rear compartment in an atmospheric light from light sources positioned vertically on the B-pillars.

Long-wheelbase versions of the new BMW 7 Series will also be available with the Sky Lounge Panorama glass roof, which is likewise one of a kind in the luxury sedan segment. When it gets dark, the light emitted from side-mounted LED modules is directed evenly onto the glass surface, where it hits an imprinted graphic. This creates an atmospheric motif mimicking a starry sky.

Another option customers can select to increase the feeling of well-being on board is the Ambient Air package, which ionises the air and generates a selection of eight aromas. Outstanding sound quality, meanwhile, is the speciality of the likewise newly developed Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system, which has been specifically tuned to the interior of the new BMW 7 Series.

World premiere in the new BMW 7 Series: Remote Control Parking.
The new BMW 7 Series is the world’s first series-produced car that owners will be able to manoeuvre in or out of forward-parking spaces or garages without anyone at the wheel. As such, the Remote Control Parking option allows drivers to access tight parking spaces with ease. The driver initiates the car’s progress forwards into or in reverse out of a space using the likewise newly developed BMW Display Key. While the car is carrying out the semi-automated manoeuvre, the driver watches out for obstacles.

Unique in the luxury sedan segment: BMW Laserlight.
Another new feature in the luxury sedan segment is BMW Laserlight, familiar from the BMW i8. Thanks to BMW Selective Beam, this is dazzle-free and can be specified for the new BMW 7 Series as an alternative to the standard full-LED headlights. The laser headlights generate a particularly bright, pure white light as well as providing a high-beam range of 600 metres, double that of the LED headlights.

Innovative driver assistance systems from BMW ConnectedDrive enhance comfort and safety.
The Steering and lane control assistant, Lane keeping assistant with active side collision protection, Rear collision prevention and Crossing traffic warning functions have been added to the Driving Assistant Plus system. Meanwhile, the Traffic jam assistant – which involves semi-automated driving – can be used on any type of road. And the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function now only requires drivers to press a button to incorporate speed restrictions detected by the Speed Limit Info function. The new generation of the Surround View system now also includes a 3D View and Panorama Side View option in the Control Display.

Production at BMW Plant Dingolfing: globally unparalleled lightweight design expertise.
The new BMW 7 Series will be built, like all of its predecessors, at BMW Plant Dingolfing. The Dingolfing factory combines its many years of experience in building luxury sedans with globally unmatched expertise in the field of lightweight design. BMW Plant Dingolfing serves as the aluminium competence centre within the BMW Group’s worldwide production network and has now also become the world’s first automotive manufacturing facility in which CFRP is used in body construction as part of a hybrid technique.

BMW is using a technology and innovation workshop to present an initial selection of development highlights which the next generation of the BMW 7 Series model range will use to set new benchmarks in lightweight design, driving dynamics, comfort, intelligent connectivity and operation. The extensive use of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the structure of the passenger cell, the rigorous and detailed application of lightweight design and a new generation of engines combine to reduce the weight of the luxury sedan along with its fuel consumption and emissions figures. The comfort, safety and driving experience offered by the new BMW 7 Series benefit from new chassis technology, exceptional scope for interaction with the car’s infotainment technology and a wider selection of driver assistance systems from BMW ConnectedDrive.

BMW EfficientLightweight: Carbon Core helps to reduce weight by up to 130 kilograms.
Thanks to the BMW EfficientLightweight strategy, the new BMW 7 Series line-up will tip the scales up to 130 kilograms lighter than the outgoing generation of models. At its heart is a body structure with a Carbon Core based on the transfer of technology from the development of the BMW i models. The use of CFRP – whose material properties lend themselves to use in the passenger cell areas exposed to heavy loads – increases torsional rigidity and strength. The configuration of the sheet metal elements can be adjusted accordingly, allowing body weight to be significantly reduced.

Six-cylinder in-line engine from the new generation of power units.
The new BMW 7 Series model range will be powered by engines including a six-cylinder in-line variant from the BMW Group’s latest generation of power units. The new petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology links up with a likewise further developed eight-speed Steptronic gearbox.

Dynamics and ride comfort made to measure – and to the highest standard.
Sophisticated, precision-honed chassis technology and additional chassis control systems – fitted as standard or available as an option – enhance both the driving dynamics of the next-generation BMW 7 Series and its ride quality. At the same time, the balance between these two facets of driving pleasure reaches a level without parallel in the luxury sedan segment. The inclusion of two-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling as part of the standard specification leads to noticeably improved ride comfort. Dynamic Damper Control also features as standard. Its electronically controlled dampers improve the primary and secondary ride of the sedan and sharpen its dynamic attributes. The latest update of the Integral Active Steering system, along with the first electromechanically driven Dynamic Drive roll stabilisation system, contribute to a further boost in comfort, dynamic prowess and assurance on the road in the new BMW 7 Series.

Successor to 5 Series long wheelbase will launch in autumn

Company expands production capacity in China

Munich/Beijing. The BMW Group will also produce its X1 Sports Activity Vehicle in China in the future. “The BMW X1 could be one of the first products for our new plant in Tiexi in the Shenyang region. We are currently exploring this possibility together with the authorities here in China,” said Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG Norbert Reithofer in Beijing on Wednesday. The facility currently builds BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series models for the Chinese market.

Following the launch of the new 5 Series, a successor to the 5 Series Long Wheelbase version will also be produced and sold only in China. Production of the new vehicle will begin in autumn of this year. The Long Wheelbase version of the 5 Series has proved extremely successfully in China, with more than 70,000 vehicles sold since 2006.

In light of the promising opportunities for growth, the BMW Group will continue to expand its presence and its purchasing activities in China over the coming years. “We are confident that this market will continue to see strong growth over the next few years. Our goal is to participate in that growth over the long term,” Reithofer explained. “With our new plant in Tiexi, we will be increasing our production capacity in China to 100,000 vehicles a year from 2012 on. Over the long term, we anticipate the two plants having combined potential for as many as 300,000 vehicles a year – depending on market trends. We may realistically need this potential over the long term”.

The BMW Group announced that it would build a second production plant in China in November 2009. The investment volume for the new plant amounts to a total of 560 million euros; the BMW Group and its partner, Brilliance, will each defray half of this amount. Construction work is scheduled to begin in early June 2010, with the start of production slated for 2012. The expanded capacity in Shenyang will create a total of around 1,000 new jobs. 600 new employees have already been hired and are currently being prepared for their roles.

China is currently the BMW Group’s fourth largest market worldwide. Last year the BMW Group sold more than 90,000 vehicles in mainland China. In the first quarter of 2010, the company increased deliveries by 106% to reach a total of 34,179 vehicles. “China is, and will remain, one of the most attractive automobile markets in the world,” added Reithofer. In 2002 – before the plant in Shenyang was built and opened in 2003 – the BMW Group’s retail volume in mainland China was just under 6,700 vehicles.

According to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), a total of around 478,000 premium automobiles were sold in China last year. The Association estimates that the market for premium vehicles in China will grow to more than 1.5 million units a year by 2020.

Resource-efficient production plays an important part in the BMW Group’s sustainability strategy and at the Shenyang location also. Through rigorous optimisation of its production processes, the existing plant in Da Dong reduced energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions alone by 12 percent and water consumption by as much as 40 percent between 2008 and 2009.
