Munich. The BMW M GmbH is currently preparing the
generation change for the iconic sports cars. With driving dynamics
tests performed under racetrack conditions, the series development
process for the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupé (fuel
consumption combined: 10.9 – 10.5 l/100 km [25.9 – 26.9 mpg imp];
CO2 emissions combined: 249 – 239 g/km, preliminary data)
is entering its crucial phase. With a significant increase in
performance vs. the predecessor models and an M-specific suspension
setup, newly developed straight six-cylinder engines once again set
benchmarks in the segment of high-performance sedans and coupés of the
premium midrange class. Comprehensive innovations in the areas of
drive, wheel suspension, springs, dampers and braking technology
require thorough testing on public roads at the BMW Group testing
centres in Miramas, Southern France, in the Swedish town of Arjeplog
as well as on a number of different racetracks.

Traditionally, the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring sets the yardstick
for the perfect interaction between drive and suspension technology in
every situation. However, because the performance characteristics of a
BMW M automobile have to convince not only there but also on the most
varied racetrack profiles, the test engineers always expand the test
programme to include further circuits such as the current test drives
with camouflaged prototypes of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4
Coupé at the Sachsenring.

A few months before their world premiere mid-September 2020, the
dynamic potential of the new BMW M3 Sedan and the new BMW M4 Coupé is
already clearly perceptible. Inspiring agility, outstanding dynamics
and precisely controllable handling even in extreme sporting
situations characterise their driving behaviour. The balance between
superior performance and unrestricted everyday suitability so typical
of an M attains a new level. “With each BMW M automobile, we put
motorsport technology on the road,” says Markus Flasch, CEO BMW M
GmbH. “The new BMW M3 Sedan and the new BMW M4 Coupé embody this
principle in a particularly intensive way, because both models stand
unmistakably in the tradition of the most successful touring car
worldwide. And results of the test drives show us that the new model
generation is significantly superior to that of its predecessors in
terms of performance.”

Like all current high-performance-automobiles from the BMW M GmbH,
the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupé are offered in two
performance levels: Besides a 353 kW/480 hp variant with a 6-speed
manual shift, there is also the choice of a Competition model with
375 kW/510 hp and an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with
Drivelogic. “For customers who prefer a puristic performance
experience and particularly intense interaction with their vehicle,
the model variants with a manual transmission constitute an offer that
is unique in this segment,” explains Dirk Häcker, head of Development
M Automobiles and BMW Individual. “On the other hand, with the
Competition versions of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupé, we
are addressing maximum dynamics in regards power development and
transfer – initially with classic rear-wheel drive and, at a later
date, also in conjunction with the latest version of our four-wheel
drive system M xDrive.”

Compared with the predecessor models, the straight six-cylinder
engines featured by the new high-performance sports cars deliver a
maximum output increase of 36 kW/49 hp and 44 kW/60 hp (Competition
models) and a maximum torque of up to 650 Nm. Moreover, thanks to
M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving concept, the power plant
impresses with performance characteristics derived from motor racing.
The power unit excels through extraordinarily spontaneous response in
every speed range and is also deployed in the BMW M4 GT3, which will
become the new top-of-the-rage model from the BMW M GmbH in the
customer sport segment as from the 2022 season.

With a meticulously operated testing programme, development and
testing engineers at the BMW M GmbH are currently making sure that the
M-specific suspension components are tuned to the engine’s performance
characteristics to such an extent that they guarantee the new BMW M3
Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupé places in the first row of the starting
grid in their vehicle segment. The around 3,670-metre stretch at the
tradition-steeped Sachsenring, which is known as the long-standing
venue of the German Touring Car Masters (DTM) racing series, also
offers the ideal prerequisites for this purpose. With its challenging
profile comprising hairpin bends, long straights and the downhill
passage before the Queckenberg bend, it is possible lap after lap to
achieve targeted optimisation of the longitudinal and lateral driving
dynamics of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupé.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

Munich. Two extremely efficient high-performance
models are joining the BMW M line-up in the premium midsize segment.
The six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo
technology fitted in the BMW M340d xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption
combined: 5.7 – 5.3 l/100 km [49.6 – 53.3 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions
combined: 149 – 139 g/km) and BMW M340d xDrive Touring (fuel
consumption combined: 5.8 – 5.4 l/100 km [48.7 – 52.3 mpg imp]; CO2
emissions combined: 153 – 143 g/km) produces exceptional pulling power
while attaining similarly impressive levels of efficiency. The
3.0-litre unit generates maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp and peak
torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft). The inclusion of 48V mild hybrid
technology, meanwhile, has led to a further reduction in fuel
consumption and emissions. Thanks to their comprehensive arsenal of
exhaust gas treatment technologies, including an SCR catalytic
converter with AdBlue injection, the most powerful diesel variants of
the new BMW 3 Series also comply with the future Euro 6d emissions standard.

The arrival of the new BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and
BMW M340d xDrive Touring in April 2020 bring that inimitable M feeling
to a diesel-fuelled BMW 3 Series for the first time. The potent engine
in the new BMW M models teams up with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport
transmission, bespoke chassis technology and intelligent all-wheel
drive. M Sport suspension – including variable sport steering – and
M Sport brakes are fitted as standard on both models, likewise the
M Sport differential. M-specific exterior features with optimised
aerodynamic properties are part of an overall package that leaves no
stone unturned in the provision of supreme performance. The new
BMW M340d xDrive Sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just
4.6 seconds, while the new BMW M340d xDrive Touring completes the same
sprint in 4.8 seconds. The combination of pulsating driving
characteristics and a cockpit focusing squarely on the enjoyment of
intense driving pleasure guarantees an enthralling experience of high
performance at work.

Exceptional power delivery meets exemplary efficiency: the
six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo
technology and 250 kW/340 hp.

The new M models in the BMW 3 Series line-up owe their unmistakable
character in no small part to outstanding power delivery coupled with
rock-bottom fuel consumption and emissions given the performance at
hand. Their 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line diesel engine features a
crankcase and cylinder head both made from aluminium. Frictional
losses in the base engine are reduced by measures including a wire-arc
sprayed steel coating for the cylinder bores.

The power unit’s BMW TwinPower Turbo technology comprises a two-stage
turbocharging system with optimised thermodynamics and direct charge
air cooling, along with common-rail direct injection using piezo
injectors. To ensure exceptionally sharp turbocharger response, the
system’s high-pressure and low-pressure stages both feature variable
turbine geometry. The further developed direct injection system, whose
injectors now operate at a maximum 2,700 bar, ensures a precisely
metered supply of fuel and extremely clean combustion. Integral
pressure sensors enable up to ten injections per stoke. Engine
response and efficiency also benefit from an intake system with
optimised air routing, whose upgraded design enhances the power unit’s
acoustics as well. Extensive engine encapsulation measures ensure the
straight-six is particularly easy on the ears – and at the same time
helps to optimise warm-up behaviour. Specially developed for the new
BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and BMW M340d xDrive Touring, the diesel unit’s
peak torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) is on stream from just 1,750 rpm,
while maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp arrives at 4,400 rpm.

Mild hybrid technology with a 48V starter-generator increases
dynamism and efficiency.

The inclusion of mild hybrid technology allows the engine to build
power with an even greater sense of urgency. The 48V starter-generator
fitted in the new BMW M models creates an electric boost effect that
instantly puts an additional 8 kW/11 hp on tap. This extra input
augments power delivery under hard acceleration and increases
efficiency at regular speeds. The electrical power required here is
stored in a 48V battery that is charged by recuperating energy under
braking or on the overrun. Plus, additional energy can be supplied to
the 48V battery by raising the engine’s load point.

The power generated in this way assists the engine when travelling at
a constant speed, too, meaning it can operate within an
efficiency-optimised load range as often as possible. As a result,
there are fewer spikes in fuel consumption. The mild hybrid technology
has the additional benefit of improving the operation of the Auto
Start Stop and coasting functions. The 48V generator allows the engine
to be deactivated with very little vibration and restarted smoothly
during brief stops at junctions or in traffic jams. When braking, the
engine can be switched off at speeds below 15 km/h (9 mph) already.
The coasting function available when the Driving Experience Control
switch is set to ECO PRO or COMFORT mode also shuts the engine down
completely, creating further potential for lowering fuel consumption.

M Sport exhaust system generates stirring soundtrack, exhaust
gas treatment complies with the Euro 6d emissions standard.

The straight-six diesel engine in the new BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and
BMW M340d xDrive Touring backs its exhilarating power delivery with a
highly distinctive aural accompaniment. Both models are equipped as
standard with an M Sport exhaust system whose rear silencer culminates
in a pair of trapezoidal tailpipes.

With a view to minimising emissions, the diesel engine in the new
BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and BMW M340d xDrive Touring includes an
efficient low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation circuit and an
extremely powerful three-way high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation
circuit. Added to which, the two-stage NOX exhaust re-treatment system
fitted as standard by BMW in diesel-engined models since 2012 has been
further developed. The close-to-engine component of the exhaust gas
treatment system with BMW BluePerformance technology comprises a
diesel oxidation catalyst and an SCR coating in the diesel particulate
filter. A second SCR catalyst has been integrated at the exit of the
close-to-engine system to minimise nitrogen oxide emissions (NOX). The
new BMW M models in the BMW 3 Series range therefore comply with the
requirements of the Euro 6d emissions standard not due to come into
force until 2021.

Sublime power transfer: eight-speed Steptronic Sport
transmission, BMW xDrive and M Sport differential as standard.

The powerful straight-six diesel hooks up as standard with the
latest-generation eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, whose
ratio spacing is perfectly attuned to the power unit’s performance
characteristics. As well as super-sharp gear shifts, the transmission
stands out with its optimised hydraulic control system, low converter
slip and effective damping of rotational irregularities. Shift paddles
on the steering wheel enable lightning-fast manual interventions in
the gear selection process. There is also a Launch Control function
for accelerating off the line with full dynamic intent.

The intelligent all-wheel-drive system in the new
BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and BMW M340d xDrive Touring enables fully
variable distribution of drive power between the front and rear wheels
using an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer
case. Working in tandem with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control)
system, BMW xDrive reacts to changes in the driving situation with
great precision and in a fraction of a second, maximising traction,
agility and handling stability in all weather and road surface
conditions, and when the driver explores the car’s sporting
capabilities. The system’s rear-biased setup helps to produce the
driving experience expected of an M car, and is especially pronounced
with the Driving Experience Control switch set to SPORT or SPORT+
mode. Judicious apportioning of even more power to the rear wheels
increases turn-in agility, in particular.

The M Sport differential for the rear axle – another standard feature
linked with both DSC and the all-wheel-drive system – ensures power is
transferred to the road with even greater precision. The fully
variable locking function is able to limit speed equalisation between
the inside and outside wheel through corners so that the car’s agility
and cornering prowess rise to new levels under hard driving. This
helps the driver to power out of bends with extra dynamic verve. In
situations where the road surface offers differing levels of adhesion
for the left and right rear wheels, the M Sport differential increases
traction and handling stability by preventing slip at the wheel
struggling for grip.

Standard: M Sport suspension and variable sport steering.

Like the engine and power transmission tech, the chassis systems on
board the BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and BMW M340d xDrive Touring are
designed to deliver supreme performance. Both models are equipped as
standard with M Sport suspension, which extracts the full dynamic
handling potential offered by the double-joint spring strut front axle
/ five-link rear axle combination on the new BMW 3 Series to
exhilarating effect. The M Sport package brings a ten-millimetre drop
in ride height, M-specific elastokinematics and lift-related dampers.
The latter combine extra hydraulic damping on rebound at the front
axle with a compression-limiting system at the rear, enabling
continuously variable, progressive adjustment of damper firmness in
response to spring travel. Vibrations experienced during dynamic
cornering or on bumpy road surfaces can therefore be smoothed out with
unruffled assurance.

Alternatively, customers can opt for Adaptive M suspension with
electronically controlled dampers. This system of damper control
offers extremely finely metered spring and damping responses and
adapts constantly to both driving style and road surface conditions.
The compression and rebound stages are tweaked independently of one
another to match the situation at hand. The damping characteristics
can be adjusted using the Driving Experience Control switch. SPORT and
SPORT+ modes optimise dynamic driving and create a noticeable contrast
to the more comfort-oriented damper responses in COMFORT and ECO PRO modes.

Both the standard M Sport suspension and optional Adaptive
M suspension join forces with variable sport steering, whose
Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance helps to give the cars
unshakable straight-line poise and accurate turn-in through
dynamically taken corners. The variable ratio adjusts to changes in
the steering angle, further enhancing comfort. It allows drivers to
perform low-speed manoeuvres with minimal steering wheel movement and
without changing their grip on the wheel, at the same time as
increasing agility on twisty sections of road.

M Sport brakes and M light-alloy wheels with mixed-size tyres.

Outstanding stopping power and a pointedly sporty setup – headlined
by short pedal travel and a distinct pressure point – are the defining
characteristics of the M Sport brakes (also standard). Four-piston
fixed callipers and 348-millimetre discs at the front wheels and
single-piston floating callipers with 345-millimetre discs at the rear
form the basis for safe, supremely assured handling, while
blue-painted callipers bearing the M logo add a visual flourish.

Rounding off the chassis highlights on the new BMW M340d xDrive Sedan
and BMW M340d xDrive Touring are 18‑inch M light-alloy wheels with
mixed-size tyres measuring 225/45 R 18 at the front and 255/40 R 18 at
the rear. 19‑inch M light-alloy wheels in three designs can be found
on the options list alongside 19‑inch BMW Individual light-alloy
wheels, again with mixed-size tyres. The 19‑inch M light-alloy wheels
are also available with high-performance tyres.

M‑specific design features for the exterior and interior.

Signature BMW M exterior design features help to give the new
BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and BMW M340d xDrive Touring a distinctive look
that re-asserts their outstanding performance capabilities. The front
apron, side skirts and rear styling of both models have been crafted
to fulfil functional requirements in terms of cooling air supply and
aerodynamics. The new BMW M340d xDrive Sedan adds a body-coloured
M rear spoiler to the mix. The bespoke design elements on both models
also include a mesh-design BMW kidney grille and trapezoidal exhaust
tailpipes. BMW Individual High-gloss Shadowline trim and a Cerium Grey
metallic finish for the exterior mirror caps, the air intake trim in
the front bumper, the surface of the BMW kidney grille mesh and its
surround, the tailpipes, and the model badge add to the exclusive
appearance of the BMW M duo.

The interior’s styling and equipment are focused entirely on
maximising enjoyment of the intense driving experience served up by
the car. The standard sports seats for the driver and front passenger
are upholstered in an M-specific combination of Sensatec and Alcantara
with contrast quilting in Blue, while an anthracite-coloured BMW
Individual headliner, an M leather steering wheel with multifunction
buttons and shift paddles, M pedals, M-specific floor mats and
interior trim strips in Aluminium Tetragon with accent strips in
Pearl-effect Chrome bring further touches of sporting flair to the interior.

As well as bespoke powertrain / chassis technology and M-specific
design features, the standard equipment roster for the
BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and BMW M340d xDrive Touring also includes
three-zone automatic climate control (with separate operation of the
temperature and ventilation settings both for the driver and front
passenger side and the rear compartment), ambient lighting, extended
storage and an automatically dimming rear-view mirror. Also featured
as standard in the new BMW M models are Park Distance Control with
sensors at the front and rear, BMW Live Cockpit Plus complete with
navigation system and 8.8-inch Control Display, and the Connected
Package Plus including Real Time Traffic Information, Remote Services,
Concierge Services and Apple CarPlay preparation.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

special-edition model in the shape of the new BMW M3 CS (fuel
consumption combined: 8.5 l/100 km [34.0 mpg imp]*; CO2 emissions
combined: 198 g/km*). With its accentuated sporting presence, the new
M3 CS continues the decades-long tradition of successful M special
editions which began in 1988 with the E30 BMW M3 Evolution. At the
same time, the four-door high-performance sedan serves up a perfect
blend of dynamism and everyday practicality.

The 3.0-litre high-performance engine exceeds the output of the M3
with Competition Package by 10 horsepower, raising it to 460 hp.
State-of-the-art M TwinPower Turbo technology propels the M3 CS from 0
to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds. The top speed of the new
special edition, which comes as standard with the M Driver’s Package,
is electronically limited to 280 km/h (174 mph). With its two
mono-scroll turbochargers, charge air cooler,
High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and
Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing, the six-cylinder in-line
engine takes a clear and consistent aim at the higher echelons of
performance, but is equally committed to developing significant torque
from low engine speeds and achieving high levels of efficiency (fuel
consumption combined: 8.5 l/100 km [34.0 mpg imp]*; CO2 emissions
combined: 198 g/km*). Pushing the new red start/stop button fires up
the engine, and the distinctive sound produced by the specially tuned
sports exhaust system of the new BMW M3 CS – with its quartet of
tailpipes – proceeds to lay on a feast for the ears.

The new BMW M3 CS is equipped as standard with the seven-speed
M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) with Drivelogic. This
cutting-edge transmission has a separate oil cooler and enables both
automated gear changes and manual interventions using the shift
paddles on the steering wheel. It changes gears in fractions of a
second with no interruption in the flow of power, but employs a long
seventh gear to keep revs low and minimise fuel consumption over
longer motorway journeys.

The suspension of the new BMW M3 CS largely mirrors that of the
M3 with Competition Package. The links and wheel carriers at both the
front and rear axles are made from forged aluminium and are therefore
extremely light. That keeps the unsprung masses low and benefits
driving dynamics. The M3 CS is fitted as standard with Adaptive M
suspension, whose geometry has been tuned to deliver optimised
performance on both the road and track. Ensuring the best possible
grip in all driving conditions are the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control)
system – which includes M Dynamic Mode – and the Active M
Differential. The control systems for the Adaptive M suspension, DSC
and Active M Differential have been modified to suit the dynamic
requirements of the BMW M3 CS, as has the set-up of the
electromechanical steering. The driver has the option of adjusting the
steering and suspension settings to their personal preferences or the
demands of the route at hand. The special edition’s light-alloy wheels
(front: 9 J x 19, rear: 10 J x 20) are very much at home on the race
track, fitted as they are (as standard) with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup
2 tyres (front: 265/35 R 19, rear: 285/30 R 20). These semi-slick cup
tyres, which are also road-legal, provide unbeatable grip and supreme
lateral stability at high track speeds. The M3 CS can also be ordered
with Michelin Sport road tyres.

Moving inside the new BMW M3 CS, the generous use of two-tone full
leather in Silverstone/Black and Alcantara creates a compelling and
well-resolved ambience brimming with sporting allure and undeniable
class. No M3 CS driver will need to compromise on the nicer things in
life. Indeed, among the standard features on board are automatic
climate control, a Harman Kardon surround sound system and the
Navigation system Professional. True to form, the BMW M GmbH designers
have given the new M3 CS looks that reflect the car’s sporting intent.
The signature feature of its prominent front end, complete with
cutting-edge twin LED headlights, is the front apron with large,
three-section air intakes. The Gurney spoiler lip on the boot lid has
been newly designed specifically for the new M3 CS, and teams up with
the front splitter and the rear diffuser to help minimise dynamic
lift. These components are made from the lightweight and extremely
rigid high-tech material carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), as
are the bonnet and roof of the new BMW M3 CS.

Orders for the new BMW M3 CS can be placed from January 2018. The
special-edition model – which will be limited to a run of
approximately 1,200 units due to production factors – will be built
from March 2018.

* Fuel consumption and CO2 figures are provisional, based on the EU
test cycle and may vary depending on the tyre format specified.

Further information on official fuel consumption figures, specific
CO2 emission values and the electric power consumption of new
passenger cars is included in the following guideline: “Leitfaden über

Jerez de la Frontera. 2018 is the 20th
season with BMW M as the “Official Car of MotoGP” – and in keeping,
BMW M GmbH presents a real highlight in the BMW M Award in their
anniversary year. The best qualifier in the MotoGP can look forward to
an exclusive BMW M3 CS in Frozen Dark Blue at the end of the season.
This year’s winner’s car is particularly special since the BMW M3 CS
is a special edition limited to 1,200 units worldwide. The BMW M Award
winner’s car for 2018 was officially unveiled at the Spanish Grand
Prix in Jerez de la Frontera this Saturday.

The BMW M Award has long been an integral part of the BMW M GmbH
commitment to the MotoGP, and it will be presented for the
16th time in 2018. Since 2003, the MotoGP rider with the
best results in qualifying has been rewarded with an exclusive,
individually designed BMW M car at the end of the season. As with the
scoring system for the race, the riders receive points for their
positions in qualifying at each Grand Prix weekend. The rider who has
picked up the most points at the end of the season wins the coveted
BMW M Award.

“BMW M GmbH has outdone itself once again with the selection of the
BMW M Award winner’s car in its anniversary season,” said Pau
Serracanta, Managing Director of the Commercial Department of Dorna
Sports, at the unveiling. “The new BMW M3 CS is an impressive
high-performance car, and I am confident that the prospect of this
fantastic prize will provide our riders with even more motivation to
give it their all in qualifying. We are excited to see who will claim
this car as their own at the end of the season. The 20th
season as ‘Official Car of MotoGP’ and already the 16th BMW
M Award: We are delighted with the long-standing and successful
partnership with BMW M.”

“It goes without saying that 2018, as our anniversary season in the
MotoGP, is something very special to us,” added Vladimir Bistrivoda,
head of MotoGP collaboration at BMW M GmbH. “Which is why we are
excited, in our exclusive high-performance limousine BMW M3 CS, to be
able to present another very special model from our range of products
as the BMW M Award winner’s car. It makes us proud that the BMW M
Award has been a coveted award for many years among the MotoGP family
– and we want to say thank you for this appreciation by choosing
highlights such as the BMW M3 CS as winner’s cars.”

The new BMW M3 CS is the most powerful production vehicle ever in the
M3 series. It takes just 3.9 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h.
Its powerful M TwinPower turbo inline-six-cylinder engine delivers a
performance of 460 hp and a torque of 600 Nm. A 7-speed M dual clutch
transmission with Drivelogic takes care of the power transmission in
the BMW M Award winner’s car. The adaptive M suspension of the BMW M3
CS guarantees the highest dynamic handling in every situation. The
already sporty appearance of the car is highlighted by the paintwork
in Frozen Dark Blue, the full leather, fine-grain Merino bicolour
upholstery, as well as further fittings highlights such as the M
steering wheel in Alcantara.

The BMW M Award is one of the many BMW M activities as the “Official
Car of MotoGP”. The record holder is Marc Márquez, who has already
claimed the BMW M Award five times in a row. Valentino Rossi and Casey
Stoner each have three wins to their name. Jorge Lorenzo has been
honoured as the best qualifier twice to date while Sete Gibernau and
Nicky Hayden have each won the award once.

World premiere: BMW M Performance Parts for the all-new 2018
BMW M5.

Since its world premiere in August, the new BMW M5 (combined fuel
consumption: 10.5 l/100 km; CO2 combined emissions: 241 g/km*) has
attracted attention around the globe. At the SEMA Show in Las Vegas,
BMW is now presenting a further highlight: a comprehensive range of
exclusive M Performance Parts for the BMW M5. All of these components
from the M Performance Parts accessory range were developed using BMW
M motorsport know-how and are perfectly harmonised with each other.
They not only underscore the high-performance sedan’s sporty and
luxurious appearance, but also fulfil functional requirements in terms
of aerodynamics, cooling and lightweight construction. Most of these
exclusive M Performance Parts for the BMW M5 will be available as
retrofit components when the vehicle is launched to the market in
March 2018, with further products following in July 2018.

Aerodynamics in perfection. The numerous highlights
featured in the accessory range developed especially for the BMW M5
include the package comprising M Performance aerodynamics components.
All of these parts are made from lightweight carbon fibre and are
elaborately handcrafted.

The following aerodynamics components are available: a newly designed
front attachment, side sill attachments, a carbon fibre rear spoiler,
a carbon fibre rear spoiler Pro (**) and a rear diffuser. All of these
components accentuate the BMW M5’s powerful and sporty appearance,
whilst ensuring optimised aerodynamic characteristics plus even
sportier handling.

Additional components from the M Performance Parts accessory range
have been perfectly adapted to the aerodynamics package and now
provide additional accents to the BMW M5. The visible carbon fibre
front and air breather trim side grilles (**) bearing the M logo and M
Performance carbon fibre mirror caps further enhance the carbon fibre
look. The M Performance side sill foils accentuate the side sill
attachments, optimally rounding off the distinctively sporty look
provided by the aerodynamics package.

Latest technology from motorsport brings the BMW M5’s performance
onto the road, whilst guaranteeing superior driving behaviour right up
to the car’s limit. Thanks to an even sportier set-up, the new BMW M
Performance coilover suspension developed specifically for the BMW M5
ensures excellent road-holding and increases driving dynamics
resulting from a more direct connection of the vehicle body with the
road. Moreover, red coil springs also add further visual highlights.
The spring plates are adjustable.

Carbon-ceramic brakes guarantee superior braking characteristics. The
sports disc pads are based on highly durable, motorsports-proven
racing brake pads and offer advantages such as a shorter braking
distances, better brake response as well as higher thermal resilience.
Furthermore, the race-oriented interpretation of brake-force
distribution provides for enhanced dynamic brake control.

The new BMW M Performance sports exhaust system, which will be on
sale exclusively in the USA and Canada, guarantees an emotional
motorsport sound. The end muffler is made from titanium with carbon
fibre tailpipe trims additionally available. Optimised exhaust gas
routing with reduced counter-pressure enhances the beefy V8 TwinTurbo
sound and underscores the sporty driving experience.

The M Performance Drive Analyser, also derived from motorsport, is an
innovative tool for recording and evaluating all important vehicle
dynamics data. The system offers comprehensive, professional
possibilities to record and analyse, which can be evaluated and
displayed on the smartphone. The Drive Analyser determines a variety
of relevant indicators such as diverse engine data, speed and peak
values, engaged gear, use of accelerator pedal and brakes as well as
lateral acceleration. When established, the results can be directly
shown on the smartphone as videos or graphic representations via the M
Performance Drive Analyser App, which is available free of charge to
BMW customers. Furthermore, customers also wishing to capture their
drive on film, BMW M Performance Parts offers the Trackfix action
camera holder, which can be mounted in the threaded bush of the towing
lug either at the front or rear end of the vehicle.

Sporty, dynamic appearance down to the finest detail.

M Performance Parts for the BMW M5 M bring that true racetrack
feeling to everyday life – also in terms of visual presence. These
include motorsport stripes in typical M colours, which highlight the
car’s sporty design even further and lend it its very own individual
character. The elaborately handcrafted M Performance carbon fibre
engine cover extension kit is a real eye-catcher and also makes the
car’s racing genes visible where its performance has its origins – in
the engine compartment.

This racing look has also been applied to the vehicle’s interior components.

The M Performance steering wheel (**) conveys genuine motorsport
feeling thanks to its distinctive geometry and extremely pronounced
Alcantara grip area and a carbon fibre steering wheel cover. This is
further enhanced by newly designed carbon fibre shift paddles (**) and
a carbon fibre gear shift lever cover (**). M Performance floor mats
are a perfect complement to the car’s interior ambience. Finest
details from the suspension to the interior reveal that the BMW M5 and
M Performance Parts have their roots in motor racing, and this also
includes the new key wallet for the BMW M5. It comprises a material
mix of high-quality Alcantara and carbon fibre and offers a perfect
combination of motorsport design and functionality. The M Performance
LED logo projector, which completes the accessory range available for
the BMW M5, is also a genuine statement.

M Performance Parts in use for the MotoGPTM.

A unique model designed for racetrack use will shortly be celebrating
its premiere – the BMW M5 MotoGPTM Safety Car. Since 1999,
BMW M has been the “official car of the MotoGP” and affiliate partner
of MotoGP organizers Dorna Sports, deploying its fleet of safety cars
to guarantee safety in the world’s fastest motorcycle racing series.
Like the predecessor model, the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car is equipped
with a multitude of BMW M Performance Parts so that it is able to
fully meet the special demands on a lead vehicle in professional
motorsport. These also include M Performance aerodynamics components
as well as the BMW M Performance sports exhaust system made from
titanium. The BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car will make its first racetrack
appearance at the 2017 season final in Valencia, Spain, in November.
During the 2018 season, it will be the spearhead of the BMW M MotoGP
Safety Car fleet.

The BMW M5: the new high-performance sedan.

Thanks to numerous innovative features, the new BMW M5 offers perfect
handling up to the vehicle’s dynamics limits – both on the road and on
the racetrack. These include the newly designed M-specific four-wheel
drive system M xDrive being employed in the BMW M5 for the first time.
It guarantees optimised driving dynamics through precise handling and
perfect traction. The heart of the BMW M5, the 4.4-litre V8 engine
with M TwinPower Turbo technology, has been extensively revised by our
M engineers. It delivers 441 kW/600 hp and a maximum torque of 750 Nm,
offering a significant increase in performance vs. the predecessor
models. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h with the new 8-speed
Steptronic transmission featuring Drivelogic is just 3.4 seconds. The
suspension features M-specific kinematic and elastokinematic elements
to help optimise driving dynamics. Weight is also a crucial factor in
terms of performance: This has been further reduced, inter alia, by a
roof made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic.

“Need for SpeedTM Payback”: Individualisation and
high-tech carbon fibre also in the interactive video game.

BMW took innovative and spectacular paths at the presentation of the
BMW M5: Thanks to the partnership with Electronic Arts, the world
premiere took place for the first time in a video game – in “Need for
SpeedTM Payback”. Hence, BMW and Electronic Arts presented the new BMW
M5 for the first time at the Gamescom in Cologne, Europe’s largest
fair for interactive games and entertainment. In “Need for
SpeedTM Payback” (release: 10 November 2017), gamers are, as in
reality, able to refine their virtual BMW M5 with M Performance Parts
that have been developed specifically for this car. During missions
and races gamers can generate virtual money with which they are then
able to buy and fit their car with original BMW accessories from the
range of M Performance Parts for the BMW M5. These original parts,
including components made from high-tech carbon fibre material are,
like those fitted to a real BMW M5, perfectly adapted to the vehicle
and to each other. So they ensure a noticeable increase in performance
and individuality in the virtual world as well.

World premiere: 2018 BMW M3 30 Years American Edition
celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the M3 in the US with
a one of a kind design created by BMW Group Designworks, built
through BMW Individual (available in USA only).

The BMW M3 (combined fuel consumption: 8.8 (8.3)/100 km; CO2 combined
emissions: 204 (194) g/km) is one of the most recognized vehicles in
the automotive industry, spanning a long history of success that seems
to have no boundaries, today it is still considered as one of the
purest high performance street sports cars. With the launch of the
first generation BMW M3 in 1986, BMW M revolutionized the sports car
as it was, built first and foremost for performance. Originally
conceived as homologation special for Group A Touring car racing – as
seen in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM), it became the most
successful touring car in the history of BMW. Its arrival to the US
market in 1987 signaled the birth of the legend in America and to
celebrate its first 30 years on the road and track, BMW Group
Designworks teamed up with BMW Individual to create a one of a kind
design highlighting its Motorsport heritage through American iconography.

Exterior inspired by an original M color and the American flag motif.

With its finger on the pulse of the American experience, BMW Group
Designworks has created an American color inspired theme for the
30th Anniversary of the BMW M3 in the US. What better way
to celebrate the US arrival of the M3 than a palette of red, white and
blue. The 2018 BMW M3 30 Years American Edition design started life as
a 6-speed manual transmission BMW M3 Competition Package but it was
quickly transformed into a very special and unique vehicle as noted by
its striking exterior color, Frozen Red II Metallic. Although the name
of the exterior color is described as “frozen” for the low gloss
finish, as if the car is coated with a layer of frost, the heat of the
red pigment radiates from within, illuminating the muscular BMW M3
surfaces. Frozen Red II Metallic also speaks to the iconic BMW Henna
Red of the original M3 from the 1980’s.

The gilded tone is making a comeback after its eighties hey-day and
so complementing the exterior are a set of one-off M Performance
Golden light alloy wheel (763M Style – 19-inch front, 20-inch rear),
the color inspired by the M3 E30 Warsteiner DTM racing wheels. Also
exclusive to the exterior are the M color roof stripes that emphasize
the M identity on a premium material, carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic
(CFRP), as well as a 30th Anniversary graphic applied to
the rear sunshade.

The exterior is complimented by an all-American, interior
tri-tone color scheme.

The interior could not be less special and the designers quickly
identified that there is nothing more American than red, white and
blue. Open the driver’s door of the 2018 BMW M3 30 Years American
Edition and its interior shines through with a continuation of the
exterior theme through an expertly crafted tri-color Merino leather
interior by BMW Individual. The BMW Individual Opal White Merino
leather interior provides a base for red stripes and blocks of blue.
The red stripes are expressed in Mugello Red Merino leather and the
blue is Fjord Blue Merino leather. Red, white and blue contrast
stitching provides a patriotic detail even at the smallest scale. Red
stripes can be seen on the side bolster, lower instrument panel and
the door panel. Blue is reflected in the seat insert. Opal White
surfaces feature red contrast stitching on the seats, lower section of
the instrument panel and center door panel, hile Mugello Red facades
includes white contrast stitching on the seat bolster stripe, upper
section of the lower instrument panel, and armrest upper and lower
panels. Fjord Blue is present at the seat insert as well as the seat
back shell insert. Black leather makes use of Blue/Red contrast
stitching on upper instrument panel on driver’s side, door handle,
center console knee bolster and gear shift bag. In addition, the
American flag is adorned with a gold fringe when displayed in doors.

The 30th Anniversary graphic was inspired by the 3 Series
40th Anniversary graphic. The bold red, white and blue
color scheme is tempered by a subtle motif inspired graphic inscribed
on the headrest, decorative trim and the rear sun-shade. The
achromatic graphic juxtaposes “30th” over the American flag
symbolizing the thirty years Americans have been expressing their
passion for the BMW M3 in the US.

BMW M Performance Parts round-up the BMW M3 30 Years American
Edition. The shock absorbers with contrasting red coil
springs featured on the 2018 BMW M3 30 Years American Edition are
clearly distinctive features of the adjustable M Performance Sports
suspension, allowing the driver to lower the vehicle’s ride height
between 5 and 20 millimeters via the adjustable spring plate. The M
Performance sports suspension, enables customers to experience
racing-inspired driving dynamics in everyday use on the road.

Motorsports aerodynamics are present in this one of a kind M3 through
the BMW M Performance rear wing. This aerodynamic component is
handmade completely from carbon fiber (wing, side sections, support
brackets) and is accentuated with racing stripes, bringing motorsport
know-how to the streets and tracks.

Derived directly from motor racing, the one-off golden M Performance
wheels, which are milled and weight-optimized entirely from a forged
blank, contribute towards even better steering behavior, resulting in
a further increase in driving dynamics. The wheels are matched with
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires for maximum grip and performance.

The lightweight valve controlled M Performance exhaust system with
titanium rear silencer generates a highly emotive sound reminiscent of
sports car racing and adds two 93 mm dual tailpipe finishers made from
carbon with the M logo to create a striking and unmistakable appearance.

In the interior, the M Performance armrest, door handles and shift
knob complete the tri-tone color scheme look and ensures an all-round,
high quality touch and feel. The armrest has a striking appearance
thanks to its noble materials and special look: Alcantara and Carbon
trimmed with contrasting three-colored M-stitching. Visually, the seam
traces a line all the way to the handbrake grip completing the overall
M Performance look that extends over the center console and new M
Performance shift knob.

One lucky customer will be able to get behind the wheel of this one
of a kind 2018 BMW M3 30 Years American Edition as it
is expected to be available for purchase after the show conclusion.
Details will be provided to interested parties at the BMW Booth
(68000) outside the South Hall on the Performance Pavilion area.

Munich. From November 2017 onwards, the CFRP
driveshaft in the BMW M3 Sedan, BMW M4 Coupe and BMW M4 Convertible
high-performance sports cars (fuel consumption combined: 9.5 – 8.3
l/100 km [29.7 – 34.0 mpg imp], CO2 emissions combined: 218 –194 g/km)
will be gradually replaced by an M specific high-performance
driveshaft made of steel. This measure will create the necessary
technical basis for meeting future statutory emissions requirements.
At a later point in time, a petrol particulate filter (PPF) will be
incorporated into the existing installation space in these models in
major markets.

The newly developed steel driveshaft has been designed to ensure the

Munich. 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of a motoring
icon, one which revolutionised the mid-size sports car segment when
its production started in 1986. The very first BMW M3 set a new
standard by which other carmakers would be measured – and, five model
generations later, are still judged today. BMW Motorsport Division,
the precursor to BMW M Division, was incredibly rigorous in its
deployment of undiluted motor racing technology in the development of
the first-generation BMW M3. Its endeavours produced a thoroughbred
high-performance sports car – based on the series-produced BMW
3 Series – that was perfectly suited to daily use. Over the three
decades that have followed, BMW M has gently refined its trailblazing
and highly successful creation from one generation to the next, while
always taking great care to preserve the original character of the M3.
The upshot is that there is arguably still no other car that blends
such prominently honed motor sport genes and uncompromised everyday
practicality into such an emotionally stirring overall package.

The 30th anniversary of the BMW M3 provides an ideal opportunity to
look back at four highly intriguing model variants that, for various
reasons, never made it past the prototype stage. Four surprise guests
will therefore be attending their progenitor’s birthday party: the BMW
M3 Pickup from 1986, the BMW M3 Compact from 1996, the BMW M3 Touring
from 2000 and the second incarnation of the BMW M3 Pickup unveiled in 2011.

Use in touring car racing was the overriding development
objective for the first-generation BMW M3.
The BMW M3 was not an attempt to produce a sporting
flagship for a volume-produced model range; instead it originated from
the idea of developing a racing car for motor sport that would also be
available in a road-going version. The selected category of racing was
Group A production touring cars – as seen in the German Touring Car
Championship (DTM) that had succeeded the German Racing Championship
(DRM). The Group A regulations stated that for a racing car to be
homologated, at least 5,000 road-legal units had to be sold within 12 months.

Having the chance to develop the production and race versions of the
car alongside one another presented the development team with a
tremendous opportunity, which they duly capitalised on. The axle
kinematics, suspension and damping were all perfectly tailored to the
future demands of motor racing, as was the braking system, which
combined the standard ABS with inner-vented brake discs at the front
and an engine-driven high-pressure pump. Details such as the
transmission’s shift pattern with first gear at the bottom left also
gave a clear indication of the vehicle’s singular focus on racing.

On top of this came extensive weight-saving measures. While the body
with broad wheel arches was manufactured from sheet metal in the
traditional manner, the front and rear bumpers along with the side
skirts, boot lid and spoiler were made of plastic, reflecting the
engineers’ commitment to intelligent lightweight construction. The BMW
Motorsport experts tweaked the car’s aerodynamics too, with the
C-pillar of the BMW M3 following a slightly shallower angle than the
standard body and having a broader base. This allowed the airflow to
be directed towards the distinctive rear spoiler more effectively.

Extensive use of high tech in the powertrain, too.
The experts at the Motorsport department used the
two-litre four-cylinder engine fitted in series-production models as
the basis for the M3’s unit, as the low weight of its construction and
its high-revving capabilities meant it had exactly the right
ingredients for a racing engine. To transform the well-mannered
everyday engine into an athletic performer with sports car
credentials, however, they had to subject it to some intensive power therapy.

First, they increased its displacement to 2.3 litres and converted it
to a four-valve arrangement. For this purpose, the team employed a
suitably modified cylinder head taken from the six-cylinder engine
featured in the BMW M1, whose combustion chambers were – conveniently
enough – spaced exactly the same distance apart as the four-cylinder
unit’s. The crank drive on the BMW M3 was designed to be so rigid that
it could handle 10,000 revolutions per minute and more. The standard
production car’s rated engine speed of 6,750 rpm therefore left plenty
of margin for further evolutions of the motor sport off-shoot.

From sporting machine to heavy-duty transporter: the BMW M3
Pickup (1986).
When the first generation of the BMW M3 was brought
out, it wasn’t just customers who were enthralled by its exceptional
dynamic abilities. It also caused quite a stir within the BMW
Motorsport department responsible for its development, who saw it as
the perfect means of transporting work equipment and parts around the
premises of what is now BMW M Division in Garching near Munich. The
only problem was that goods transport didn’t figure very highly on the
list of the first BMW M3’s many talents.

It didn’t take long to remedy the situation, the body of a BMW 3
Series Convertible being transformed into a BMW M3 Pickup. “The
convertible bodyshell was chosen as the basis for two reasons,”
recalls Jakob Polschak, head of vehicle prototype building and
workshops at BMW M Division and an employee at the company for more
than 40 years. “Firstly, we happened to have such a model at our
disposal and in perfect condition. And secondly, the convertible’s
built-in bracing made it the ideal choice for a pickup conversion.”

The first BMW M3 Pickup did not sport the original’s boldly flared
wings, as it was equipped with the narrower body of its regular,
volume-produced sibling. At first it was powered by the engine fitted
in the so-called “Italian M3”, which had a reduced two-litre
displacement due to tax regulations there and an output of 192 hp.
“Later we switched to the original 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine with
200 horsepower,” reveals Polschak. The BMW M3 Pickup went about its
work around the factory premises reliably for over 26 years before
finally being retired four years ago.

The BMW M3 Pickup’s long service life alone is clear evidence that
the one-off versions being presented here are not mere gimmicks or
engineering exercises. On the contrary, they are high-performance cars
that have been optimised to perfectly match their intended task or
field of use. As such, they epitomise the philosophy of BMW M. Plus,
they also fulfilled another important purpose: “Our apprentices,
graduate trainees and placement students assisted in the construction
of all of these prototypes,” explains Polschak. “This allowed them to
gain invaluable hands-on experience at the same time as freeing up
resources for us – a classic win-win situation.”

A starter model for young target groups: the BMW M3 Compact (1996).
The same was also true of the 1996 BMW M3 Compact,
of course. The idea behind this model was to present younger
customers, in particular, with an entry point into the world of BMW M
cars. “To a certain extent, the M3 Compact can be regarded as the
forefather of today’s BMW M2,” remarks the BMW M workshop chief with a
twinkle in the eye, and it’s easy to see why he draws the comparison.
If it had gone into production, the M3 engine’s power would in all
likelihood have been lowered somewhat. In the prototype, however, it
was allowed to unleash its full 321 hp, which made easy work of
propelling a lightweight car (it tipped the scales at just 1.3
tonnes). “It is 150 kilograms lighter, more agile, firmer and even
more uncompromising,” enthused German motoring magazine “auto motor
und sport” (issue no. 13/1996) after testing it.

A feasibility study under real-world conditions: the BMW M3
Touring (2000).
The BMW M3 Touring prototype likewise materialised
because a production model was under consideration. The M3 Compact was
made available to journalists for testing in order to both project an
image and sound out customer interest. But the M3 Touring served
entirely in-house purposes. “This prototype allowed us to show that,
from a purely technical standpoint at least, it was possible to
integrate an M3 Touring into the ongoing production of the standard
BMW 3 Series Touring with very little difficulty,” explains Jakob
Polschak. “One important thing we needed to demonstrate was that the
rear doors of the standard production model could be reworked to adapt
them to the rear wheel arches without the need for new and expensive
tools.” Once it had passed through the assembly line, the M3 Touring
required only minimal manual follow-up work to fit the M-specific
add-on parts and interior details, for example.

History repeats itself: the BMW M3 Pickup (2011).
Once the first-generation BMW M3 Pickup described
above eventually started to show the first serious signs of wear after
around a quarter of a century of service, it was time for a successor.
As with the original, those responsible for its creation again opted
for a convertible body due to the existing strengthening elements.
“The conversion work had initially proceeded in the usual, largely
unspectacular manner during the spring of 2011. But then someone came
up with the idea of marketing the vehicle as an April Fools’ joke, as
April 1 was just around the corner,” recounts Polschak. To prime the
public, spy shots of calibration runs on the Nürburgring’s
Nordschleife circuit emerged in the run-up to the day, which served to
fuel speculation about plans to build a production model.

And it worked. Reports from the time show that a good many
journalists and bloggers took the bait and believed the rumours. Even
the official press release published on 1 April 2011 did not
immediately set matters straight, first presenting the BMW M3 Pickup
as the “fourth body variant” following the Sedan, Coupe and
Convertible, before going on to say: “309 kW/420 hp under the bonnet
and a payload capacity of 450 kilograms over the rear axle take the
BMW M models’ hallmark blend of racing-style driving pleasure and
everyday practicality to a whole new level.” It also pointed out that
the Cd was only marginally higher than that of the BMW M3 Coupe, the
car was 50 kilograms lighter than the Convertible and the 20-kilogram
targa roof could be removed to further lower the centre of gravity and
therefore deliver even sharper handling dynamics.

It wasn’t until the final paragraph that the press release discreetly
revealed the model in question was actually a one-off built for use as
a workshop transport vehicle. Unlike its predecessor, however, it had
also been licensed for road use.

The BMW M3: a sporting icon and dynamic benchmark for five
generations.
30 years ago almost to the
day production began of the first series-produced BMW M3s. This
represented the opening chapter in a story of success which has no
equal in the automotive world. The 2.3-litre four-cylinder unit with
four-valve technology produced 147 kW/200 hp and accelerated the M3,
which weighed just 1,200 kilograms, from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in
just 6.7 seconds. Top speed was 235 km/h (146 mph). In 1988 the Evo
version was unveiled, with power increased once again to 220 hp and
its top speed to 243 km/h (151 mph). And this was followed in 1990 by
the final development stage of the first-generation M3: the BMW M3
Sport Evolution with 238 hp 2.5-litre engine, produced in a limited
run of 600 examples.

The second generation of the BMW M3 – not developed specifically for
use in motor sport this time – was a much more understated affair.
Unveiled in 1992, its six-cylinder engine developed 210 kW/286 hp from
three-litre displacement and peak torque of 320 Newton metres (236
lb-ft). It also featured the innovative new camshaft control system
VANOS. The new model set two world records – for the highest output
per litre (97 hp/l) and the highest specific torque (108 Nm (80
lb-ft)/l) produced by a volume-produced naturally-aspirated engine.

An extensive facelift in 1995 saw the displacement of the
six-cylinder in-line engine increased from 2,990 to 3,201cc, with
output rising to 236 kW/321 hp. Added to which, the new engine also
employed Double-VANOS, which brings fully variable camshaft control on
both the intake and exhaust sides. In summer 1996 the BMW M3 became
the first series-produced car to be offered with the option of an SMG
automated manual gearbox.

Featuring an aluminium bonnet with powerdome, prominently flared
wheel arches, an aerodynamically optimised boot lid with rear spoiler
lip and four tailpipes exiting the dual-flow exhaust system, the
third-generation BMW M3 unveiled in 2000 cut an extremely eye-catching
figure once more. Power again came courtesy of a naturally-aspirated
six-cylinder in-line engine. The completely newly developed unit
developed output of 252 kW/343 hp from its 3,246 cc and peak torque of
365 Newton metres (269 lb-ft).

Instead of being equipped with a straight-six engine, like the two
previous generations of the car, the fourth incarnation of the BMW M3
presented in 2007 was powered by a high-revving, naturally-aspirated
V8 developing 309 kW/420 hp. Among the extensive intelligent
lightweight design measures employed were the carbon fibre-reinforced
plastic (CFRP) roof fitted as standard and a front axle made almost
entirely from aluminium.

The current (fifth) generation of the BMW M3 was introduced in spring
2014. In keeping with the change in nomenclature for BMW’s
series-produced models, only the four-door sedan is badged “M3”, while
the coupe and the convertible variants were given the model
designation M4. In all three body variants, a free-revving
straight-six engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and
317 kW/431 hp provides the power. Rigorously applied intelligent
lightweight design elements include the extensive use of lightweight
materials such as CFRP and aluminium for many chassis and body
components. All of which has shaved around 80 kilograms off the weight
of its predecessor.

This summer, BMW M Division released an exclusive special-edition
model – limited to 500 units worldwide – as a special tribute to the
successful 30-year history of the BMW M3. With its Macao Blue metallic
exterior paint finish, the BMW M3 “30 Jahre M3” harks back to the
first generation of car, for which this colour shade was first
offered. The Competition Package, which is included as standard and
comprises extensive powertrain and suspension modifications, pushes
the engine output of the anniversary model up by 14 kW/19 hp to 331
kW/450 hp.

Press Contact: Lisa Aigner
Tel: +49-151-601-30526
E-mail: lisa.aigner@bmw.de

Motorsport,Sports,Corporate Heritage,Heritage,M3,F80,F81,Product,BMW M

Munich. With the launch of the first generation of
the BMW M3 in 1986, the BMW M GmbH, at that time operating under the
name BMW Motorsport GmbH, revolutionized the sporty mid-range segment.
No other manufacturer had previously ever deployed genuine motorsports
technology so consistently in order to transform a high-volume
production model like the BMW 3 Series into a thoroughbred
high-performance sports car that is also fully suitable for everyday
use. The first BMW M3 set the standard by which other manufacturers
were measured.

Meanwhile, BMW M has continuously refined its automotive icon across
five model generations. And over all these years the BMW M3 has
retained its original character. Probably no other automobile combines
distinct racing genes and unrestricted day-to-day suitability into
such a highly emotional overall concept. To mark the 30th anniversary
of this automotive icon this summer, BMW M is launching the exclusive
special edition of the BMW M3 “30 Years M3”, which is limited to 500
cars worldwide.

Edition “30 Years M3” in the legendary colour Macao Blue metallic.
As a tribute to the first generation of the BMW M3, the
anniversary edition “30 Years M3” is painted in the exclusive exterior
colour Macao Blue metallic, which once celebrated its premiere in
BMW’s colour range as a special option for the first generation of the
BMW M3.

The edition “30 Years M3” builds on the Competition Package, which is
optionally available for the BMW M3 series production model. It
comprises an increase in engine output by 14 kW/19 hp to 331 kW/450 hp
(BMW M3 “30 Years M3”: combined fuel consumption: 8.8–8.3 l/100 km,
combined CO2 emissions: 204–194 g/km). Also included in the
Competition Package is the Adaptive M suspension, which has been
comprehensively aligned to the increased performance. Optimised
features also include new springs, dampers and stabilisers, modified
characteristic curves of the three modes Comfort, Sport and Sport+ as
well as a correspondingly modified standard Active M differential on
the rear axle and Dynamic Stability Control feature (DSC). Moreover,
the Competition Package of the edition model includes forged 20-inch M
light-alloy wheels with 666 M star spoke design and mixed tyres
(front: 265/30 R20, rear: 285/30 R20).

All of these measures lead to a noticeable increase in dynamic
performance, which is not least also reflected in enhanced
acceleration. The BMW M3 “30 Years M3” with optional 7-speed M double
clutch transmission sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4 seconds,
which is 0.1 seconds faster than the series production model. Even
with the standard 6-speed manual transmission, the car completes this
sprint 0.1 seconds faster than the production model.

In terms of exterior design, the Competition Package also includes
the BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line with enhanced features,
including a black chrome tailpipe trim for the M sports exhaust
system, the characteristic and potent sound of which contributes
significantly towards the highly emotional driving experience. The
edition model also features exclusively designed M gills in the front
wings bearing the logo “30 Years M3”.

Sporty, functional interior with an exceptionally high-class ambience.
The Competition Package upgrades the interior of the
edition “30 Years M3” with specific M sports seats in a skeletal
design that combine perfect support with distinct travel comfort over
long-distances. Seatbelts with woven-in BMW M strips also enhance the
sporty interior ambience.

The logo “30 Years M3” on the front doorsills reminds both driver and
front passenger of the BMW M company icon’s unique history. The
wording “30 Years M3 1/500” on the carbon fibre interior trim strip of
the instrument panel gives indication of the exclusiveness of the BMW
M3 “30 Years M3”, which is limited to 500 cars worldwide. “30 Years
M3” is embroidered into the front headrests.

The BMW M3 “30 Years M3” features an exclusive full leather Merino
trim in bi-colour Black/Fjord Blue or optionally in Black/Silverstone
with colour-matching contrast seams that effectively underscore the
anniversary model’s sporty and sophisticated character.

Compared with the BMW M3 with Competition Package, the additional
cost of the anniversary model is €10,000 in Germany. Market launch is
scheduled for the summer of 2016 – this being exactly 30 years after
the signing of the first contract for the purchase of a BMW M3.

1986 – a 3 Series with flared arches and impressive power.
Around six months after BMW had stunned experts with
the world premiere of the new BMW M3 at the International Motor Show
in Frankfurt in the autumn of 1985, the time had finally come: In the
spring of 1986, the first automotive journalists were given the
opportunity on the racetrack in Mugello to test the “3 Series
supercar”, which looked extremely spectacular not just because of its
distinctively flared wheel arches. The 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine
featuring four-valve technology delivered 147 kW/200 hp. This power
unit was an ideal match for the two-door car, which weighed in at only
1,200 kilograms thanks to lightweight construction – the front and
rear bumpers, the side sills and the boot lid including spoiler as
well as other features were made of plastic. Acceleration from 0 to
100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 235 km/h are still
impressive figures even today.

1988 saw the presentation of the Evo version of the BMW M3, which
reached a top speed of 243 km/h thanks to a further enhanced power
output of 220 hp. And in 1990, the highest upgrade version of the
first model generation was launched to the market – the BMW M3 Sport
Evolution, which had a 238 hp, 2.5-litre power unit under the bonnet
and was limited to 600 cars.

Impressive proof of engineering skills in the development of the BMW
M3 was delivered as early as in 1986 by the catalytic converter
versions of the sports car. As the technicians had also given
consideration to the use of exhaust gas purification technology right
from the beginning of the development phase, each model version lost
only 3 kW/5 hp in engine power as a result of being fitted with a
catalyst; the effect on driving performance was only marginal.

1992 – from a thoroughbred racing car to an elegant coupe.
Unlike the predecessor, the second generation of the
BMW M3, which celebrated its debut in 1992, had not been specifically
developed for deployment in motor sports. The significantly more
discreet and elegant coupe featured a three-litre, six-cylinder engine
with 210 kW/286 hp and a maximum torque of 320 Nm. As a result, the
power unit, which was fitted with innovative VANOS camshaft control
technology, delivered impressive proof of top-notch engineering
skills. With its litre performance (97 hp/l) and specific torque
(108 Nm/l), it set two world records for high-volume, naturally
aspirated engines. The BMW M3 Coupe sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in
exactly six seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

The new BMW M3 stood out through the shape of its exterior mirrors.
The aerodynamically optimized, double bridged mirror casings boasting
a wing-shaped profile immediately distinguished the car from the
series production versions of the BMW 3 Series Coupe. Even today, the
distinctively shaped M exterior mirrors serve as one of the most
characteristic identifying features of most M models.

In 1994, BMW M supplemented the BMW M3 range with two body variants
at the same time. In addition to a convertible, the BMW M3 was also
available for the first time as a four-door sedan. Customers were
particularly pleased by the fact that the Sedan’s performance equalled
that of the Coupe.

In 1995, within the framework of a comprehensive model upgrade, cubic
capacity of the straight six-cylinder engine increased from 2,990 to
3,201 cubic centimeters and power output to 236 kW/321 hp. The new
engine featured double VANOS, so in addition to a variably adjustable
intake camshaft, it also had a synchronously operating exhaust
camshaft. The result: In spite of increased power reserves and
noticeably improved performance (e.g. 0–100 km/h in 5.5 seconds), the
modified BMW M3 was extremely fuel-efficient.

From the summer of 1996, the BMW M3 became the world’s first
high-volume production car to feature an automated manual
transmission. The function of the sequential M transmission was
racing-oriented: To shift gears up, the driver pulled the shift lever
back, and to shift gears down, he or she simply pushed it forward. The
system was extremely popular with customers, with almost every second
BMW M3 that rolled off the production line at the BMW Regensburg plant
at that time being fitted with this SMG transmission.

2000 –

thoroughbred athlete with a self-confident appearance.
The third generation of the BMW M3 sported a bolder
look than its predecessor. Thanks to the aluminium bonnet with power
dome, the distinctly wider wheel arches, the aerodynamically optimized
boot lid including rear spoiler lip as well as the four tailpipes of
the dual-flow exhaust system, the Coupe left no room for doubt about
its power reserves and dynamics.

The car was also powered by a straight six-cylinder, naturally
aspirated engine. The entirely redeveloped power unit delivered an
output of 252 kW/343 hp from a displacement of 3,246 cubic centimetres
and a maximum torque of 365 Nm. 5.2 seconds for the sprint to 100 km/h
and just 5.4 seconds to accelerate from 80 to 120 km/h in fourth gear
– these figures reflect this BMW M3’s performance potential. In the
spring of 2001, just a few months after the Coupe, the Convertible
made its debut, looking even more muscular with its low, concise waistline.

The BMW M3 CSL on sale from 2003 assumed an exceptional status. On
this special model, which was consistently trimmed for lightweight
construction – the abbreviation CSL has always been the term used by
BMW for Coupe, Sport and Lightweight – an output of 265 kW/360 hp
combined with an unladen weight of just 1,385 kilograms, which
corresponds to a power-to-weight ratio of 3.85 kg/hp. The weight
reduction was achieved not simply by omitting supposedly unnecessary
(comfort-related) components, but through the principle of intelligent
lightweight construction, i.e. by using the most suitable material in
the right place. This included for example the roof made from carbon
reinforced plastic (CRP) and the rear window fitted with thin glass.
This paid off, as acceleration testifies: 0–100 km/h in 4.9 seconds,
0–200 km/h in 16.8 seconds.

2007 –

fourth generation with V8 engine and CRP roof as standard.
Instead of a straight six-cylinder engine featured by
the two previous generations, the fourth edition of the BMW M3 had a
naturally aspirated V8 engine under its bonnet. The high-revving,
four-litre power unit delivered 309 kW/420 hp, weighed only 202
kilograms and was therefore 15 kg lighter than the previously deployed
engine. Use of the intelligent lightweight construction concept was
also further pursued in other areas. For instance, the BMW M3 Coupe
featured as standard a CRP roof, the fibre structure of which remains
visible beneath a clear coat. The front axle of the car was made
almost entirely of aluminium.

The autumn of 2007 saw the market launch of the four-door version of
the BMW M3, which sprinted from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and was
therefore only a tenth of a second slower than the Coupe. The
Convertible completed the model range just a few months later in the
spring of 2008.

2014 –

innovative engine technology and consistent lightweight construction.
With the launch of the fifth generation of their top
athlete in the spring of 2014, the BMW M GmbH not only presented both
the Sedan and the Coupe simultaneously for the first time, but also
brought the model designation into line with the new nomenclature of
the series models. Thus, the Sedan bears the name BMW M3, the Coupe
BMW M4 – like the Convertible that has been available since the autumn
of 2014.

The entirely redeveloped straight six-cylinder engine featuring M
TwinPower Turbo technology and a high-revving concept delivers a
maximum output of
317 kW/431 hp and maximum torque of 550 Nm
available across a broad engine speed range, thus exceeding the
highest amount of torque offered by the previous BMW M3 by almost 40
percent. Fuel consumption and emissions are around 25 percent lower.
Both the BMW M3 Sedan and the BMW M4 Convertible complete the sprint
from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds (with optional 7-speed dual clutch transmission).

In order to attain the highest level of driving dynamics coupled with
exceptional fuel efficiency, vehicle weight (with standard equipment)
was reduced by around 80 kilograms vs. the previous model. This again
was made possible through the consistent implementation of intelligent
lightweight construction measures. These include, among others,
increased use of lightweight materials such as carbon fibre reinforced
plastic as well as aluminium for numerous suspension and body components.

“Happy birthday, BMW M3” – friends and companions
congratulate on the car’s 30th birthday.

“I will always have a very special connection to the BMW M3. My
father used to drive a black BMW M3. I myself became DTM champion in
2012 driving a matt black BMW Bank M3. All BMW M3 production models
have this very special racing character – similar to the new BMW M4.
The BMW M GmbH has managed to bring a racetrack feel onto the road. It
is not really easy to make such a powerful car so compact and
roadworthy like BMW has done with the M3. The BMW M3 is sportiness in
its purest form. And it will always stand out in my memories.”
Bruno Spengler, professional racing driver, competing for the
BMW Team MTEK in the DTM 2016, DTM champion 2012 in a BMW M3 DTM

“The BMW M3 is a fascinating car – today just as it was 30 years ago.
I myself drove the M3 of that time around the racetrack. And compared
to our racing cars of today, it was really hard work behind the wheel.
During my very first DTM year of 2013, I celebrated victory in a BMW
M3 DTM of the modern era. That was a very special moment. And I think
the BMW M3 is simply made for creating such special moments.”
Timo Glock, professional racing driver, competing for the BMW
Team RMG in the DTM 2016, 91 Formula 1 Grand Prix races between 2004
and 2012

“For very many people – and for me, too – the BMW M3 is a synonym for
success on the racetrack. Its motorsport genes were already evident in
1986 and still are to this very day. For me as a racing driver it
feels great to also be able to drive such a sporty car off the
racetrack. The BMW M3 a legend for good reason.”
Martin Tomczyk, professional racing driver, competing for the
BMW Team Schnitzer in the DTM

“The BMW M3 is undoubtedly the most important car in my long career
as a racing driver. With this car I won the World Touring Car
Championship, the DTM title, the Italian Touring Car Championship and
celebrated numerous racing victories all over Europe. From the very
first day, the BMW M3 was a winner and it retained this position for
decades. Fans love the BMW M3 – and I love it too!”
Roberto Ravaglia, ex professional racing driver, first touring
car champion in history (1987), founder of the Team ROAL Motorsport

“The BMW M3 is a true icon. When the car made its racing debut in
1987, it was a winner right from the start, becoming the most
successful touring car of all time. Driving this car was always a lot
of fun. I experienced so many great moments and celebrated many
victories with this car. I developed a really close bond with the BMW M3.”
Johnny Cecotto, ex professional racing driver, 1989 – 1992 10
DTM race victories in a BMW M3, 1990 winner of “24-hour race Spa” in
a BMW M3, 1992 winner of “24-hour race on the Nürburgring” in a BMW
M3, 1993 ADAC GT Cup winner in a BMW M3 GTR, twice World Motorcycle
Champion (1975/1978)

“For me the BMW M3 is simply the best. I believe
everybody immediately associates the BMW M3 with the BMW M GmbH, even
more than the M1 and the M5. A major part of its fascination is
undoubtedly the result of its motor racing career. After all, to this
day, the BMW M3 is the world’s most successful touring car. I myself
own four BMW M3s from different years, my favourite still being the
BMW M3 of the first generation – and this is not only because classic
BMWs are my passion, but because I personally think the car’s design
is simply the best.”
is likewise 0.1 seconds faster in all cases than without the package.

The Competition Package also includes Adaptive M Suspension, which
has been extensively tuned to the enhanced performance and handling,
and which features new springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, along with
reconfigured driving modes (Comfort, Sport and Sport+). The standard
Active M Differential on the rear axle and DSC Dynamic Stability
Control have likewise been configured to match the upgraded dynamics.
Exclusive forged, machine-polished, weight- and rigidity-optimised
20-inch M alloy wheels – front 9J × 20; rear 10 J × 20 – with
exclusive multi-spoke 666 M styling and mixed tyres (front: 265/30
R20, rear: 285/30 R20) complete the list of chassis upgrades.

For the BMW M3 and BMW M4 Coupe, the Competition Package includes
special lightweight M sports seats that combine perfect support under
extremely hard driving with exceptional comfort on long journeys.
Seatbelts with woven-in BMW M stripes cap off an extremely sporty
interior ambience.

Eye-catching exterior highlights of the Competition Package include
the M sports exhaust system with black chrome tailpipes. Even more
than its good looks, the most distinctive feature of the M sports
exhaust system is its potent sound, which brings added emotional
resonance to the driving experience. The starting rumble and the
distinctive burble on overrun never fail to get under the skin of
dedicated drivers time and again.

The Competition Package for the BMW M3 and BMW M4 is topped off by
extended BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line exterior trim. The
high-gloss Black finish has been applied not only to the side window
trim, window recess finishers and exterior mirror frames and bases,
but also to the BMW kidney grille, the side gills and the model badge
on the tail.

classes. The fact that customers and fans also agree with this
summation is once again confirmed by the readers’ poll conducted by
German motoring magazine “sport auto”. Cars from the BMW Group
received the top scores in four classes. The BMW 335i was voted the
best sedan car up to € 50,000 for the third time in three years. The
BMW M3 Sedan was the favorite among readers for the second year in a
row in the sedans/estates up to € 100,000 class.

Also for the second time in a row, the BMW M235i took pole position
in the category for coupés up to € 50,000. In the compact cars class,
the BMW M135i easily succeeded in fighting off the competition. As in
the previous year, the BMW M550d xDrive took second place in the
diesel class, once again underlining the leading role of the BMW Group
as a supplier of vehicles that combine sporty performance with maximum efficiency.

Double victory for M Performance automobiles.
In the compact class and in the coupés up to € 50,000, the BMW
M135i (26.7 percent of the votes cast) and the BMW M235i Coupé (38.3
percent of the votes cast) once again beat off the competition. Both
vehicles have a six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower turbo technology,
ensuring spontaneous responsiveness, an exceptional thirst for revs
and outstanding refinement (fuel consumption combined BMW M235i: 8.1
l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 189 g/km; BMW M135i: 8.0 l/100 km;
CO2 emissions combined: 188 g/km*).

Triple win for the BMW 335i Sedan.
For the third time in a row, the readers of “sport auto” put the
BMW 335i in top place in the sedans up to € 50,000 category. The key
factor for the continuing success of the sports sedan is its in-line
six-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower turbo technology. The 225
kW/306 hp in-line six-cylinder engine makes particularly impressive
play with the typical BMW virtues of instantaneous responses, an
exceptional thirst for revs and outstanding refinement. The
combination of a turbocharger that operates according to the twin
scroll principle with direct high precision injection and VALVETRONIC
guarantees an unbeatably efficient balance between driving pleasure
and fuel consumption (fuel consumption combined BMW 335i: 7.9 l/100
km; CO2 emissions combined: 186 g/km*).

The defending title-holder BMW M3.

Garnering 39.4% of reader votes, the BMW M3 had no difficulty
defending its title as best sedan up to € 100,000, actually managing
to increase its share of the vote in its second year on the market.
The fifth generation of the BMW M3 (fuel consumption combined: 8.8
l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 204 g/km*) is powered by a newly
developed six-cylinder in-line engine. The high-revving unit with M
TwinPower Turbo technology offers maximum output of 317 kW/431 hp.
Peak torque of 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) is available across a broad rev band
and exceeds the maximum offered by the previous BMW M3 by almost 40
percent. A rigorously applied lightweight design concept has brought
about a weight reduction of around 80 kilograms. Fuel consumption and
emissions are down by 25 percent. The BMW M3 Sedan takes just 4.1
seconds to sprint from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) – when fitted with the
optional seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission – and also catches
the eye as a strong performer out on the track as well as in everyday use.

The “sport auto Award” has been presented by German
motoring magazine “sport auto” since 1980. It is one of the leading
German awards for sporting cars and is highly coveted by
manufacturers. In 2015 a total of 230 models were nominated in 30
series-production categories and a further 10 tuning classes. In this,
the 23rd year of the awards, 13,601 readers took part in the poll via
survey postcard, online survey or one of the “sport auto” digital channels.

Munich. BMW M GmbH is set to unveil a BMW M3 in
“Münchner Wirte” livery to coincide with this year’s Oktoberfest in
Munich (19 September – 4 October). The one-off car will underscore the
company’s ties with motor sport in general and the city of Munich in
particular. The livery design of the BMW M3 “Münchner Wirte” harks
back to that of the legendary BMW M1 Procar from 1981, complete with
Bavarian-style façade painting and blue and white twisted cords, along
with depictions of Munich landmarks (such as the Olympic Stadium,
Siegestor, Frauenkirche church and BMW’s headquarters – the
“four-cylinder” building), a roast chestnut seller and the
Wiesn-Schänke beer tent at the Oktoberfest.

Walter Maurer is responsible for bringing the design back to life on
the current BMW M3. The designer, whose close relationship with BMW
dates back several decades, created the livery for the
BMW M1 Procar “Münchner Wirte” and painted it on by hand 34 years ago.
“Although the two cars are very different, it was surprisingly
straightforward to carry over the design from the two-door BMW M1
racer to the four-door BMW M3 Sedan,” reports Maurer.

More in common than you might think.
The new BMW M3 “Münchner Wirte” and BMW M1 Procar “Münchner
Wirte” have more in common than just their eye-catching exteriors:
both cars offer the benefits of a six-cylinder in-line engine with
four-valve technology, rear-wheel drive and the vast pool of racing
expertise amassed by BMW M GmbH. The engine powering the BMW M1 Procar
racing machine developed 345 kW/470 hp, enabled acceleration from 0 to
100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.5 seconds and powered the car to a top speed of
310 km/h (193 mph). The cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo engine in the
BMW M3 comes close in terms of power, producing 317 kW/431 hp to
propel the sports sedan to a maximum 280 km/h (174 mph) when the M
Driver’s Package is specified and teaming up with the M Double Clutch
Transmission with Drivelogic to deliver a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time
of just 4.1 seconds (fuel consumption combined: 8.3 l/100 km [34.0 mpg
imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 194 g/km)*.

The BMW M3 “Münchner Wirte” will be on display at BMW Welt during the Oktoberfest.

So how did the idea come about in the first place? “I hatched the
plan to turn this very special artwork into reality in 1981, together
with my good friends and long-established Munich restaurateurs Putzi
Holenia and Karl Heckl, and the then head of the BMW press department,
Dirk Henning Strassl,” explains Maurer. A few weeks later the
BMW M1 Procar “Münchner Wirte” was lining up in the GT class at the Le
Mans 24-hour race, where driving duties were shared by the
three-strong line-up of Prince Leopold of Bavaria, Christian Danner
and Peter Oberndorfer. The car’s special design attracted a great deal
of attention and captured the imagination of many who saw it, as
reflected in the number of pictures now posted online.

Historical background.
The BMW Procar championship represented arguably the world’s
fastest and most spectacular single-make race series in 1979 and 1980.
The races were held on the undercard of the Formula One grands prix in
Europe. As well as its exploits in the Procar series, the
BMW M1 Procar also saw action in the Le Mans 24-hour race and various
national championships, including the DRM series (German Racing
Championship) between 1979 and 1986.

Press Contact: Benjamin Titz
Tel: +43-662-8383-5310
E-mail: benjamin.titz@bmwgroup.com

BMW,Concept Vehicles & Design,M3,BMW M,F80,Product

Munich. Coinciding with the market launch of new
models in the spring of 2015, BMW will guarantee enhanced diversity
and driving pleasure through the deployment of additional engines and
equipment options in already familiar series. Across the BMW 2 Series,
the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 4 Series, the number of models featuring
power units with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology from the new family of
BMW Group engines will improve the efficiency edge even further. Above
all, the new BMW 214d Active Tourer, the new BMW 316d Sedan and the
new BMW 316d Touring, the new BMW 418d Coupe as well
as the models BMW 218i Coupe and
BMW 218i Convertible score
particularly well thanks to the exceptionally low fuel consumption and
emission levels achieved by their three and four-cylinder engines.

Moreover, March 2015 will see the launch of the BMW 5 Series Edition
Sport. At the same time, the models Advantage, Sport Line, Luxury Line
and M Sport will be available for the BMW 2 Series Coupe as
alternatives to the basic version. Furthermore, the latest generation
of the navigation system Professional will be offered henceforth as an
option for the compact two-door car. Thanks to an extended range of
BMW Individual options, it will be possible to configure the exterior
and interior of the BMW M3 Sedan, BMW M4 Coupe and BMW M4 Convertible
in a particularly exclusive way. The standard equipment options for
the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car will be supplemented by the Pure
Impulse Experience programme.

BMW 2 Series Coupe, BMW 2 Series Convertible: New model
diversity for enhanced driving pleasure and optimised efficiency.

All model variants being introduced in the spring of 2015 will
feature power units of the latest generation with BMW TwinPower Turbo
technology that ensure a further optimised relation between driving
pleasure and fuel consumption. The models BMW 218i Coupe and BMW 218i
Convertible feature a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine with a
maximum power output of 100 kW/136 hp and a maximum torque of 220 Nm.
The new engine can be optionally combined with an 8-speed Steptronic
transmission. The BMW 218i Coupe
accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.8 seconds (automatic:
8.9 seconds), the BMW 218i Convertible in 9.4 seconds (automatic:
9.6 seconds). Fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels are 5.6 to
5.1 litres/100 km and 130 to 119 grams per km (automatic:
5.5 – 5.1 litres/100 km, 129 – 118 g/km) for the Coupe and 6.0 to
5.5 litres/100 km and 139 to 129 g/km (5.8 – 5.3 litres/100 km,
134 – 124 g/km) for the Convertible respectively (figures as per EU
test cycle depending on selected tyre size).

Furthermore, from March 2015, the BMW 220d Coupe powered by a
140 kW/190 hp, four-cylinder diesel engine can also be equipped with
the intelligent four-wheel drive system xDrive. The BMW 220d xDrive
Coupe comes as standard with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission and
accelerates from 0-100/km in 6.9 seconds. Average fuel consumption is
between 4.7 and 4.3 litres per 100 km and CO2 emissions between 124
and 113 g/km (figures as per EU test cycle depending on selected tyre size).

In addition to the extended engine portfolio, new equipment lines
create further possibilities for individualization of the BMW 2 Series
Coupe. The equipment range available as an alternative to the basic
version will in future comprise – analogous to the BMW 2 Series
Convertible – the model Advantage as well as the models Luxury Line,
Sport Line and M Sport. Thanks to their precisely aligned design and
equipment features, they offer additional comfort and accentuate the
vehicle’s high quality and elegance or its sporting character respectively.

As from March 2015, new light alloy wheels will be available both for
the closed and the open versions of the two-door car. The latest
generation of the navigation system Professional, which excels through
an optimised graphic display and offers, among other features, the
possibility to update maps via a mobile phone connection, is now also
available for the BMW 2 Series Coupe. For this version and the
navigation system Business, both models feature an 8.8/6.5-inch
control display respectively with a new exceptionally high-quality,
narrow surround. The onboard monitor of the BMW 2 Series Coupe now
features the sport indicator, which provides information on current
engine performance and torque. Moreover, the instrument cluster in
both models will be supplemented by a “current fuel consumption”
display function.

BMW 2 Series Active Tourer with new entry-level diesel engine
and extended range of equipment.

Starting March 2015, the model range for the BMW 2 Series Active
Tourer will be supplemented by a new entry-level diesel power unit.
The new BMW 214d Active Tourer is powered by a 70 kW/95 hp,
three-cylinder engine with a maximum torque of 220 Nm and accelerates
from 0-100 km/h in 12.9 seconds. Average fuel consumption is between
3.9 and 3.8 litres/100 km and CO2 emission levels are between 104 and
99 g/ km (figures as per EU test cycle depending on selected tyre size).

The Travel Package is a supplement within the range of optional
equipment available for the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and is ideally
suited to the vehicle’s character. It comprises longitudinal rear seat
adjustment, roof rails, tables attached to the backrests of driver
seat and front-seat passenger seat as well as a luggage compartment net.

Generation change under the bonnet of the BMW 316d.

The BMW 316d Sedan and the BMW 316d Touring will be powered in future
by a four-cylinder diesel power unit from the current BMW Group engine
family. The generation change comes with an increase in power and
efficiency. The new 2-litre engine delivers a maximum output of
85 kW/116 hp, a 10 Nm increase in maximum torque to 270 Nm and can be
optionally combined with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission. This
engine allows the Sedan to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in
10.7 seconds (automatic: 10.6 seconds) and the Touring model in
11.2 seconds (11.1 seconds). In conjunction with the manual
transmission or the 8-speed Steptronic transmission, fuel consumption
and emission levels have been lowered to between 4.3 and 3.9 litres
per 100 km and between 113 and 102 g/km for the BMW 316d Sedan and to
between 4.6 and 4.1 litres/100 km and 120 to 109 grams per km for the
BMW 316d Touring respectively (figures as per EU test cycle depending
on selected tyre size).

Premiere of the BMW 418d Coupe, greater power and efficiency
for the BMW 420d Coupe and the BMW 420d Gran Coupe.

The introduction of additional engines of the latest generation
brings added driving pleasure and further optimised efficiency also to
the BMW 4 Series. March 2015 will witness the market launch of the
entry-level version of the BMW 418d Coupe, the four-cylinder engine of
which will be the fifth diesel power plant to be offered for the BMW 4
Series. The 2-litre engine delivers a maximum power output of
110 kW/150 hp and a maximum torque of 320 Nm. The new BMW 418d Coupe
sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds with either the standard
6-speed manual transmission or the optional 8-speed transmission. In
spite of the car’s sporty character, average fuel consumption is
between 4.5 and 4.2 litres/100 km (automatic: 4.4 – 4.1 litres/100 km)
and CO2 emission levels range from 118 to 110 g/km (117 – 109 g/km;
figures as per EU test cycle depending on selected tyre size).

A further new 2-litre diesel engine with more power and optimised
efficiency will in future drive the models BMW 420d Coupe, BMW
420d xDrive Coupe, BMW 420d Gran Coupe and BMW 420d xDrive Gran Coupe.
It generates an output of 140 kW/190 hp, an increase of 5 kW, delivers
a maximum torque of 400 Nm (+20 Nm) and can be optionally combined
with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission. As a result, the relation
between sportiness and efficiency reaches an even higher level. The
BMW 420d Coupe sprints from a standstill to 100 km in 7.3 seconds
(automatic: 7.1 seconds), the BMW 420d xDrive Coupe in just
7.4 seconds (7.2 seconds). Fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels
are now between 4.5 and 4.2 litres/100 km and between 119 and 111 g/km
for the BMW 420d Coupe (automatic: 4.3 – 4.0 litres/100 km,
114 – 106 g/km) and between 4.7 and 4.4 litres/100 km and between 125
and 117 grams per km for the BMW 420d xDrive Coupe (automatic:
4.7 – 4.4 litres/100 km, 125 – 117 g/km; figures as per EU test cycle
depending on selected tyre size).

The BMW 420d Gran Coupe now accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in
7.5 seconds (automatic: 7.3 seconds). In conjunction with the
intelligent four-wheel drive system xDrive this figure is 7.6 seconds
(7.4 seconds). Resulting from the new engine’s optimised level of
efficiency, the BMW 420d Gran Coupe has an average fuel consumption of
4.5 to 4.2 litres/100 km (automatic: 4.3 – 4.0 litres/100 km) and CO2
emissions ranging from 119 to 111 g/km (114 – 106 g/km). The
corresponding values for the BMW 420d xDrive Gran Coupe are 4.9 to
4.6 litres/100 km (automatic: 4.8 – 4.5 litres/100 km) and 129 to
121 g/km (126 – 118 g/km; figures as per EU test cycle depending on
selected tyre size).

In addition to the revised engines, new exhaust systems featuring
redesigned tailpipes are also being introduced to the BMW 4 Series.
The cross section of the exhaust tailpipe for the BMW 418d Coupe is
75 mm. The models of the BMW 4 Series are powered by a 140 kW/190 hp
diesel engine and are equipped with twin-flow tailpipes, each with a
diameter of 70 mm.

BMW 5 Series: Edition Sport provides new accents in terms of
dynamics.

Consistent optimisation has led to a further increase in the
efficiency of BMW 5 Series models featuring a four-cylinder diesel
engine of the latest generation and xDrive. The combination of a
140 kW/190 hp power unit, the standard 8-speed Steptronic transmission
and the intelligent four-wheel drive system available for the BMW
520d xDrive Sedan and the BMW 520d xDrive Touring ensures ultimate
driving pleasure and fuel consumption levels of between 4.9 and
4.5 litres (Sedan) and 5.2 to 4.8 litres (Touring) per 100 km
respectively. Corresponding CO2 emission levels are between 129 and
119 g/km for the Sedan and 137 to 127 g/km for the Touring model.

From March 2015, the Edition Sport will be available as an attractive
supplement for the BMW 5 Series Sedan and the BMW 5 Series Touring. It
comprises selected exterior and interior options, which effectively
underscore the dynamic character of the upper midrange bestseller. The
Edition Sport is available for all model variants, excluding the BMW M
Performance automobiles BMW M550d xDrive Sedan and BMW M550d xDrive
Touring, and includes a leather-covered sports steering wheel, LED fog
lamps, the BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line as well as redesigned
18-inch, double spoke light alloy wheels.

The range of optional exterior colours available for the BMW 5 Series
Sedan and the BMW 5 Series Touring will now include the variants
Mediterranean Blue metallic and Mineral Grey metallic. These can also
be chosen in combination with the M Sport Package. In future, the BMW
5 Series Gran Turismo will also be available in Kashmir Silver metallic

New BMW Individual options for the BMW M3 Sedan, the
BMW M4 Coupe and the BMW M4 Convertible.

The extended range of BMW Individual equipment options available ex
factory offers additional possibilities of combining the outstanding
performance of the BMW M3 Sedan, BMW M4 Coupe and BMW M4 Convertible
with a particularly exclusive charisma. From March 2015, there will be
a choice of new BMW Individual body colours that emphasise these
models’ athletically modelled body surfaces in a particularly
intensive way with a matt de luxe shimmer. The range of matt colours,
which are applied in an elaborate process, comprises the variants
Frozen Black metallic, Frozen Silver metallic, Frozen Red metallic and
Frozen Brilliant White metallic.

Moreover, the range of model-specific equipment for the BMW M4 Coupe
is being complemented by exceptionally high-quality options for the
interior. For example, in future, the Coupe will also be available
with enhanced BMW Individual leather upholstery Merino fine grain in
the colours Opal White, Amaro Brown, Golden Brown, Cohiba Brown and
Nutmeg as well as with BMW Individual all-leather black upholstery
with contrasting seam in Sakhir Orange, Yellow, Blue or Silverstone.
Furthermore, this model can now also be ordered with a colour-matched
leather-covered BMW Individual instrument panel.

BMW i8 with extended range of standard equipment and new
options.

Starting in March 2015, the exclusive character of the BMW i8 plug-in
hybrid sports car will be underlined by an extended range of standard
equipment and new interior design options. The Pure Impulse Experience
programme is now included in the range of features available for the
BMW i8. It comprises lifestyle products in the areas of culture,
design, travel and gastronomy, which are aligned to the progressive
and sustainable “next-premium” orientation of the BMW i brand.

As from March 2015, the Carpo Carum Grey interior design impresses
with innovative aesthetics and a high-quality appearance. Natural
leather elements are combined with partially perforated leather
surfaces in the light colour Carum Grey and specific BMW i Blue
accents, such as those on the seatbelt straps or the double stitching
on the seats and floor mats. Amido metallic surfaces on the instrument
panel, centre console and doors round off the overall look. Further
special equipment options available in future are a leather engine
cover and black-painted brake callipers.

Munich. Just a few months after their market launch,
the new BMW M3 and the new BMW M4 Coupé have received the "Auto
Bild Sports Cars of the Year" award. The readers’ vote organised
by the automobile magazine "Auto Bild Sportscars" saw the
BMW M3 Sedan win the "Serial Production Sedan Models" class,
attracting 30.21 per cent of the votes cast. Meanwhile the BMW M4
Coupé (16.67 per cent) came out on top in the category "Serial
Production Coupé Models".

Top performance, driving pleasure and efficiency.
With their votes, magazine readers have impressively underscored
the outstanding position of the new M models. The BMW M3 Sedan and the
BMW M4 Coupé (combined fuel consumption of each: 8.8 l/100 km,
combined CO2 emissions: 204 g/km)* set the benchmark in the segment of
high-performance sports cars when it comes to overall concept,
precision and agility. They are powered by a newly developed
6-cylinder in-line engine. Fitted with M TwinPower Turbo Technology
and high-revving concept, the power unit provides a peak output of 317
kW/431 hp. The maximum torque of 550 Nm is available across a wide
engine speed range, exceeding the top level of the predecessor BMW M3
by almost 40 per cent. The weight was reduced by around 80 kilograms
by means of a consistent lightweight construction concept, achieving
the very highest level of driving dynamics as well as outstanding
efficiency. This gives the BMW M4 Coupé a DIN unladen weight of 1,497
kilograms. Fuel consumption and emissions have been reduced by 25 per
cent. The BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupé with the optional 7-speed dual
clutch transmission take 4.1 seconds for the sprint from zero to 100
km/h as well as offering impressively robust race track capability.

"Auto Bild Sportscars" belongs to the Auto Bild Group, the
largest magazine group in the automobile segment in Europe. Readers
were able to vote online at "autobild.de" and were given a
choice of 143 automobiles in 17 categories. The title "Auto Bild
Sports Cars of the Year" was awarded for the 13th time in 2014
and is one of the most important awards for sports-style automobiles
in Germany. The award ceremony took place at the "Race
Night" as part of the 2014 Essen Motor Show.

* Fuel consumption figures were calculated based on the ECE test
cycle, dependent on tyre format.

Munich. BMW is expanding its line-up of M
Performance Parts from the Original BMW Accessories range in time for
the Essen Motor Show 2014 (29.11–07.12. 2014). The new BMW M
Performance Parts for the BMW X3 and BMW X4, BMW M3, BMW M4 Coupe and
BMW M4 Convertible lend these models an even sharper sporting edge. As
well as attractive design upgrades for the interior and exterior, the
range also includes functional accessories which boost the performance
of classical BMW models, for example, and inject more emotional appeal
into the engine’s soundtrack. The new accessories bring the total
number of BMW M Performance Parts designed to raise sporty driving
pleasure another notch to over 1,200 – from a starter kit all the way
to exhaust systems.

These model-specific BMW M Performance products from the accessories
range, which are also available for other BMW model series, have been
developed using the decades of racing experience and innovative power
of BMW M GmbH. Thanks to the company’s deep reserves of expertise,
customers can rest assured that the retrofit components have been
adapted precisely to the character and qualities of the individual
models. They also meet the uncompromising quality standards of the BMW
Group as far as materials selection, design and quality of workmanship
are concerned. All the products belong to the Original BMW Accessories
range. When retrofitted, they do not in any way affect the warranty
terms for the relevant vehicle.

Sporty new accents for the exterior of the BMW X3 and BMW X4.
The new BMW M Performance Parts shine an even brighter spotlight
on the cars’ sporting ability and dynamic aura. Examples include a
black version of the BMW kidney grille for the BMW X3 and BMW X4, as
well as exterior mirror caps and a rear spoiler (BMW X4 only) in
high-tech carbon. The carbon components have been elaborately
manufactured by hand. Elsewhere, BMW M Performance accent strips in
Black/Silver can be ordered for the BMW X3 and BMW X4 to highlight the
two X models’ dynamic lines to pleasing effect. And the BMW M
Performance light-alloy wheels available for both the BMW X3 and the
BMW X4 add further sporting emphasis to both the exterior design of
the two cars and their driving characteristics. The high-quality
forged wheels stand out with their distinctive design and low weight.
They make an effective contribution to the reduction in the unsprung
mass of the two cars, enhancing agility and steering responses in the
process. The BMW M Performance light-alloy wheels come in 21-inch
format and with mixed tyres. The two models each get their own take on
a double-spoke design, complete with the now familiar BMW M
Performance bi-colour finish in Orbit Grey with polished spoke fronts.

New aerodynamic components for the BMW M3, BMW M4 Coupe and
BMW M4 Convertible.
As well as further enhancing the muscular athleticism of the BMW
M3 and BMW M4, the main benefit of the BMW M Performance aerodynamic
components for these high-performance sports cars can be found in
further improvements to airflow at high speed. Customers can choose
from a selection of items including add-on parts in carbon for the
side sections of the front bumper, a front attachment made from
polyurethane (PUR), a carbon rear diffuser and a carbon rear spoiler.
PUR is also used for the side skirt attachments and a rear spoiler for
the BMW M3. In addition, tri-colour side decals with “M Performance”
lettering are available for the Sedan, Coupe and Convertible.

Even sportier interior featuring new M Performance Parts.
The new BMW M Performance Parts also include a host of
attractive and sporting details for the interior of the BMW X3 and BMW
X4. The LED door sill plates in brushed stainless-steel look with
illuminated BMW M Performance lettering draw attention the moment you
open the front doors. Battery power means they are extremely easy to
retrofit, with no need for laying cables. The BMW M Performance
interior trim strips in carbon or an Alcantara/carbon combination with
M Performance lettering mark out the interior clearly from that of the
standard cars and, like the Steptronic or Steptronic sport
transmission’s carbon gearshift lever with BMW M logo, add a sporty
and exclusive accent to the cockpit. Another highlight in the new
range of accessories for the interior of the BMW X3 and BMW X4 is the
BMW M Performance steering wheel in Alcantara with attractive carbon
trim. It is beautifully grippy, even in extreme driving situations,
and remains equally pleasant to the touch in all temperatures. The BMW
M Performance stainless-steel pedal covers and the driver’s footrest,
meanwhile, provide a visually appealing and functional complement to
the other M Performance Parts for the interior. The new M Performance
key case continues the theme. With its sophisticated Alcantara/carbon
material combination, M Light Blue accents and high-quality blue hex
bolt, it blends in perfectly with the sporty and dynamic design of the
new BMW M Performance Parts. The easy-care BMW M Performance floor
mats, meanwhile, are a perfect fit and set the seal on the sporting
looks of the interior. All four mats come with eye-catching M
Performance lettering.

M Performance steering wheel with Race Display for the BMW M3
and BMW M4.
The BMW M Performance steering wheel with Alcantara covering,
carbon trim and Race Display does its bit to ensure the BMW M3 and BMW
M4 deliver a particularly full-blooded driving experience. The painted
carbon steering wheel trim carries “M Performance” lettering. The
Alcantara covering for the steering wheel rim has contrast stitching
in the three BMW M colours. And the thumb rests feature a pair of
embedded buttons used to activate Efficient Dynamics mode, Sport mode
and Race mode. The driver can use the integrated display at the top of
the steering wheel rim to view gear change signals and
lateral/longitudinal acceleration figures, among other things. Sport
mode gives the driver access to a stopwatch function with displays for
hours, minutes and seconds. Lateral/longitudinal acceleration figures
are also shown. During committed track sessions, Race mode allows lap
times to be displayed and stored in minutes, seconds and hundredths of
seconds. The top speeds and maximum lateral/longitudinal acceleration
figures for the most recent 50 laps completed can also be stored.

Power Kits boost the performance of the BMW X3 and BMW X4.

The BMW M Performance Power Kit developed for the BMW X3 xDrive30d
(fuel consumption combined: 6.1–l/100 km [46.3–47.9 mpg imp]; CO2
emissions combined: 159–156 g/km)* and BMW X4 xDrive30d (fuel
consumption combined: 5.6–5.2 l/100 km [50.4–54.3 mpg imp]; CO2
emissions combined: 146–138 g/km)* summons up a significant increase
in performance. Among its components is a control unit for the engine
electronics which has been tuned specially to the 3.0-litre
six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo
technology. This helps to induce significantly more sporting
performance characteristics with no change in fuel consumption and
emissions. The BMW M Performance Power Kit raises the engine’s maximum
output by 20 kW to 210 kW and peak torque – depending on the gear
engaged – to as much as 600 Newton metres (442 lb-ft). The most
important result of this increase in performance is a noticeable
improvement in sprinting power. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62
mph) is up to 0.3 seconds faster, the BMW X3 xDrive30d recording an
impressively fast time of approximately 5.6 seconds (down from 5.9)
and the BMW X4 xDrive30d reaching the same speed from rest in an even
quicker 5.5 seconds (down from 5.8). The boost in power goes
hand-in-hand with sportier accelerator characteristics headlined by
faster responses and an optimised engine and exhaust note. Remarkably,
these two Power Kits match the fuel consumption and emissions values
of the standard models in the ECE driving cycle despite delivering the
extra power.

M Performance silencer systems enhance visual and aural
appeal.
A BMW M Performance valve silencer, whose
operating mode can be adjusted remotely via Bluetooth, is available
exclusively for the BMW X4 xDrive35i. As well as Sport mode –
distinguished by a strikingly emotion-rich soundtrack – drivers can
also select the Track mode conceived for use exclusively on the race
track, which specialises in even more hardcore and performance-focused
sound development. The stainless-steel silencer system also comes with
trapezoidal chrome tailpipe embellishers in the style favoured by
eight-cylinder BMWs. Twin-pipe BMW M Performance embellishers in
chrome are also available for the BMW X4 xDrive20d, BMW X3 sDrive18d
and BMW X3 xDrive20d.

Striking engine soundtrack for the BMW M3 and BMW M4.
The BMW M Performance silencer system developed specially for
the BMW M3 and BMW M4 uses optimised exhaust gas channelling to
generate an emotion-rich engine soundtrack that underlines the
performance characteristics of the biturbo straight-six engine in
stirring fashion. The lightweight flap control exhaust system
comprises a stainless-steel exhaust system and a silencer made
completely from titanium and displaying M Performance lettering when
viewed from the rear. A distinctive stylistic highlight are the classy
tailpipe embellishers, in either titanium or carbon, with M logo. The
use of titanium ensures the BMW M Performance silencer system is
exceptionally heat-resistant, corrosion-resistant and lightweight.
Indeed, it weighs around eight kilograms less than the standard item.
The driver can choose from two settings for the sound characteristics
of the BMW M Performance silencer system, both of which are linked to
an engine performance profile that can be activated at the touch of a
button. In Standard mode, the sound development is already much more
dramatic than that of a regular model, has a defined sporting edge and
is also suitable for everyday use. In SPORT and SPORT+ modes the
development of power is accompanied by a stunningly powerful,
emotionally rich soundtrack, which gives the driver extremely clear
feedback on engine load.

Take a closer look with the BMW M Performance Drive Analyser.
The BMW M Performance Drive Analyser – available for all BMW
models from model year 2011 – allows owners to examine their driving
style with impressive precision. Whether the owner is pursuing lap
times on the race track or simply driving from A to B on the road,
this new tool records driving dynamics data with professional
efficiency. The BMW M Performance Drive Analyser consists of an
On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) stick, which is plugged into the relevant
socket in the car, as well as software in the form of an app for
Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. The connection between the
car and OBD stick is via Bluetooth. The car’s Click & Drive
holder, meanwhile, enables easy attachment of the smartphone to the
windscreen. All the measurements, such as the car’s speed, the gear
currently engaged, accelerator and brake usage, a range of other
engine data, and even lateral acceleration, are stored straight onto
the smartphone/tablet and can be accessed at any time. Drivers can
study the results directly on their smartphone after every journey.

Munich. BMW combines high performance with a
time-honoured brand of driving pleasure and consummate everyday
usability – that was the confirmation provided once again by the
readers’ poll conducted by German motoring magazine “sport auto”. Five
class wins and a second place represented an outstanding return for
the BMW Group’s brands in the “sport auto Award 2014”. The BMW M3
Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe were among the biggest voter favourites, with
the two BMW M Division models asserting their superiority in the
classes for “Saloons/Estates up to €100,000” and “Coupés up to
€100,000” respectively. The winners in the “Coupés up to €50,000” and
“Compact Cars” categories also carry an “M” in their model designation
– the BMW M235i Coupe and BMW M135i. Elsewhere in the competition, the
BMW 335i held sway in the “Saloons/Estates up to €50,000” class,
reprising its success from the previous year in impressive style. And
second place for the BMW M550d xDrive in the “Diesel Cars” class
highlights the BMW Group’s leading status across all classes as a
maker of sporting cars boasting exceptional efficiency.

BMW M3 and BMW M4 reinforce their elite status.
From the moment they went on sale, the BMW M3 (37.1 percent of
the vote) and BMW M4 (18.5 percent) have put forward a persuasive case
for themselves – and just a few months after their launch both were
voted top of their class by respondents in the “sport auto Award 2014”
readers’ survey. The result underlines in resounding fashion the
stand-out status of the two new models. Like its predecessors, the
fifth-generation BMW M3 encapsulates the combination of motor sport
genes and unrestricted everyday usability within an emotionally rich
overall concept. The BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe embody a new take
on the high-performance sports car theme and uphold the commitment to
implementing the BMW M philosophy espoused by their predecessors. The
BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe (fuel consumption combined for both
models: 8.8 l/100 km [32.1 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined:
204 g/km)* are powered by a newly developed six-cylinder in-line
engine. The high-revving unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology offers
maximum output of 317 kW/431 hp. Peak torque of 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) is
available across a broad rev band and exceeds the maximum offered by
the previous BMW M3 by almost 40 percent. A rigorously applied
lightweight design concept has brought about a weight reduction of
around 80 kilograms, giving the BMW M4 Coupe a DIN kerb weight of
1,497 kilograms and ensuring top-class driving dynamics and excellent
efficiency. Fuel consumption and emissions, meanwhile, are down by 25
percent. The BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe need just 4.1 seconds to
sprint from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) – when fitted with the optional
seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission – and also catch the eye as
strong performers out on the track.

A good showing for M Performance Automobiles
The BMW M235i Coupe (fuel consumption combined: 8.1 l/100 km
[34.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 189 g/km)* with 240 kW/326 hp
– likewise launched this year – also impressed the readers. A 36.5
percent share of the vote and first place in the category for coupés
up to €50,000 represented a dream start for the new model series. The
BMW M135i rounded off an excellent showing by the M Performance
Automobiles with victory in the “Compact Cars” class (27.1 percent of
the votes). Like the BMW M235i, the BMW M135i (fuel consumption
combined: 8.0 l/100 km [35.3 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 188
g/km)* is also powered by a six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo
technology that displays instantaneous responses, an exceptional
thirst for revs and outstanding refinement.

The BMW 335i staged a repeat of its success from last year in the
class for saloons/estates up to €50,000. This year 31.7 percent of
readers voted the 335i top of the pile, allowing it to continue the
tradition established by its predecessor – which was voted the most
sporting car in its class three years in succession.

The “sport auto Award” is presented annually by German motoring
magazine “sport auto”. It is one of the leading German awards for
sporting cars and is highly coveted by manufacturers. 2014 marked the
34th year that the magazine’s readers have been called on to vote,
with 234 models nominated in 15 series-production categories and 10
tuning classes. A total of 15,551 readers took part in the poll (which
ran from 17 April to 18 July) via survey postcard, online survey or
one of the “sport auto” digital channels.

Further information on official fuel consumption figures, specific
CO2 emission values and the electric power consumption of new
passenger cars is included in the following guideline: “Leitfaden über
Kraftstoffverbrauch, die CO2 emissions und den Stromverbrauch neuer
Personenkraftwagen” (Guideline for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and
electric power consumption of new passenger cars), which can be
obtained from all dealerships, from Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH

BMW M GmbH revealing a new interpretation of the high-performance
sports car – and carrying the BMW M philosophy over into the fifth
generation of the M3. More than 40,000 examples of the
fourth-generation BMW M3 Coupe were built, and now the BMW M4 Coupe is
poised to continue this success story. The “M4” badge is a reference
to the model series that provides the basis for the new M model – and,
for the first time, the Coupe will be introduced at the same time as
the four-door variant. Logic dictates the latter will be christened
the BMW M3 Sedan.

“Four generations of the BMW M3 have blended motor sport genes and
uncompromised everyday usability within an emotionally rich overall
concept,” explains Dr Friedrich Nitschke, President BMW M GmbH. “The
BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe represent an ongoing commitment to this
philosophy. The engine is the heart of every M model, and the new
turbocharged six-cylinder unit fitted in the two new cars combines the
virtues of a high-revving naturally aspirated unit with the strengths

produces a weight saving of around 80 kilograms over the outgoing M3.
The BMW M3 and BMW M4 take motor sport technology from the track to
the road, and thousands of laps of the legendary Nürburgring
Nordschleife – the world’s most exacting race track – have readied the
new models for that transition. Meticulous and passion-fuelled
development work has underpinned the creation of two high-performance
sports cars that set new standards in terms of overall concept,
precision and agility.”

The high-revving six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo
technology newly developed for the new BMW M3 Sedan and new
BMW M4 Coupe produces a maximum output of 431 hp. Its peak torque of
550 Newton metres (406 lb-ft) is available across a wide rev band and
outstrips the figure recorded by the outgoing BMW M3 by roughly
40 per cent. And yet the engine also achieves a reduction in fuel
consumption and emissions of around 25 per cent. Both the BMW M3 Sedan
and BMW M4 Coupe cover the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h / 62 mph in
4.1 seconds (with the optional seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission).

In the interests of maximising dynamic ability and ensuring excellent
efficiency, weight savings of around 80 kilograms have been achieved
over a comparably equipped predecessor model. The BMW M4 Coupe, for
example, has a DIN kerb weight of 1,497 kilograms, thanks to the
rigorous application of intelligent lightweight design measures. These
include the increased use of lightweight materials such as
carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and aluminium for a number of
chassis and body components. Indeed, both models feature a carbon roof.

One of the primary objectives in the development of the BMW M3 Sedan
and BMW M4 Coupe was to ensure the new cars offered impressive race
track capability. Hence the presence of a track-specification cooling
system, which ensures that the optimum temperature balance for the
engine, turbochargers and transmission is maintained at all times.

In order to accentuate the racing character of the two models in
terms of both their technical composition and the fine-tuning of the
cars, the engineers worked closely with BMW Motorsport’s professional
racing drivers during the development phase. For example, DTM drivers
Bruno Spengler and Timo Glock took part in the extensive testing and
set-up work carried out at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit.

Press Contact: Benjamin Titz
Tel: +43-662-8383-5310
E-mail: benjamin.titz@bmwgroup.com

Coupé,M3,BMW M,F80,F82,M4,Product
