The function is used daily by customers in several model ranges, including the 5 Series and 7 Series, iX, X5, X6, X7 and XM, as well as the new BMW iX3.

The BMW Highway Assistant enables hands-free driving on highways at speeds of up to 130 km/h. The system takes over longitudinal and lateral control and supports the driver with automated lane changes confirmed with a glance.

Dr Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President Driving Experience Development: “The symbiotic interplay between driver and driver assistance during hands-free driving with our Highway Assistant, and the underlying safety concept, are unique in the industry. Over 200 million kilometres of hands-free highway driving in real-world customer use demonstrate just how reliable and relevant this system is in everyday life.”

With the new generation of BMW driver assistance systems, the availability of the Highway Assistant in Europe is being significantly expanded from just one country to over 20. In addition, the system now provides support from the motorway entrance to the exit (entry-2-exit) when navigation is active using BMW Maps. Whilst the previous generation was available in Germany, the USA and Canada, in the new BMW iX3 and subsequent models such as the BMW i3 and BMW 7 Series, customers can now enjoy hands-free assisted driving on suitable routes across borders in numerous European countries thanks to DCAS approval*. These already include Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Further countries such as the UK, Ireland, Spain and Portugal will follow shortly. In Northern, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe the function will be available at a later date.

Special safety concept for hands-free assisted driving on highways, motorways and the autobahn.

Hands-free assisted driving with the BMW Highway Assistant is based on a comprehensive safety concept. This includes redundant systems for lane detection and vehicle positioning via cameras and high-resolution maps. Using information from the side cameras, the system continuously checks whether the vehicle is centred in the lane. A safety chip on the ADAS computer constantly monitors that everything is functioning correctly.

At the same time, the driver always remains responsible. A driver camera ensures that the driver stays alert and ready to take over at all times. To this end, the driver’s line of sight, eye status and head movements are analysed. The system is designed to ensure that hands-free driving is restricted exclusively to suitable conditions. When the system detects that the driver needs to place their hands back on the steering wheel, it prompts them to do so – for example, when approaching a highway exit.

For the new generation of vehicles, starting with the BMW iX3, the Motorway Assistant has been further developed with BMW Symbiotic Drive. The function is designed to enable seamless interaction between driver assistance systems and human driving behaviour. When driver assistance is activated, the driver can accelerate, steer and brake as required without immediately triggering a deactivation of the longitudinal and lateral guidance. The intuitive operating logic and clear displays in the BMW Panoramic iDrive ensure that assisted driving is intuitive and can be controlled at any time – for the safe use of the highest level of automation in SAE Level 2.

* Function naming in USA/Canada: BMW Highway Assistant; Function naming in UK: BMW Motorway Assistant

** Approval of driver assistance systems in accordance with UN Regulation No. 171 for Driver Control Assistance Systems (DCAS)

Press Contact: Martin Tholund
Tel: +49-151-601-77126
E-mail: martin.tholund@bmwgroup.com

Automated Driving,Research & Development,Top_News,Focus_News

Munich. The BMW Group is the first automotive
manufacturer to launch a completely newly developed digital nervous
system for all drivetrain variants and vehicle segments. It is more
intelligent, more powerful and more efficient and will be rolled out
for the first time in the models of the ##Neue Klasse##. Four
high-performance computers, also called
"Superbrains", consolidate the computing power for the most
important customer functions: infotainment, automated driving, driving
dynamics, and basic functions such as vehicle access, climate control,
and comfort. The four #Superbrains provide more than 20 times the
computing power compared to the current vehicle generation and are
already designed for upcoming software and function updates, including
AI-powered customer experiences.

"Technology openness is the key to BMW's success. Starting with
the first model of the Neue Klasse, we will roll out the technologies
of the Neue Klasse across the entire future model portfolio – across
all segments and all drivetrains. This also applies to our completely
newly developed electronic architecture made up of powerful
'Superbrains' and highly interconnected software platforms. This
architecture allows us to decouple the development of the vehicle and
software from each other. The advantage: More than ever before, all
future BMW models will remain digitally up to date via over-the-air
upgrades and will receive updates even from the next and subsequent
vehicle generations," says Frank Weber, Board Member for
Development at BMW AG.

A fundamental component of the digital nervous system is the
radically simplified wiring harness. It is based on a so-called
zonal wiring harness architecture, which uses 600
meters less wiring and brings 30% weight savings
compared to the previous generation. The wiring harness is divided
into four zones: front end, center, rear and roof. The Superbrains are
connected via high-speed data connections to smaller control units,
the zonal controllers, which manage and consolidate the data flow of
the electronics in and out of the zones. The wiring in the vehicle is
therefore zone-related and can thus be shorter, thinner, and lighter.

A crucial prerequisite for thinner and lighter wiring are the
so-called "Smart eFuses".
These are digital fuses that replace up to 150 traditional fuses.
##Smart eFuses## can be intelligently programmed for digitally
controlled energy distribution to components. The selective activation
of components allows for the design of intelligent power
modes for various vehicle states such as driving, parking,
charging, and upgrading, in which unnecessary consumers can be
identified and switched off. Thus, the eFuses make a significant
contribution to the 20% improved energy efficiency.

The completely newly developed electronic architecture forms the
basis for the next generation SDV. From the launch of the Neue Klasse,
the upcoming BMW model generation will benefit from it. The first
fully electric derivative of the Neue Klasse will go into series
production later this year at the Debrecen plant (Hungary).

The advanced software architecture of the BMW Group
builds on this new electronic architecture. With the multitude of
digital functions in SDVs, it is crucial that functions can be
continuously developed on stable software platforms rather than being
newly developed for every new generation. This is precisely what is
achieved with the Neue Klasse. In the vehicle the software platforms
run on the respective Superbrains, and the vehicle functions run on
top of them. The "Shared Service Layer" acts as a connecting
element (middleware) and provides, among other things,
state-of-the-art cybersecurity and flexible over-the-air updates. It
also enables customer-relevant AI functions thanks to intelligent
networking of cross-domain data sources.

"With the introduction of the Neue Klasse, we are entering a
mode of software development where we achieve software continuity.
This means we continuously develop software rather than starting from
scratch each time," says Christoph Grote, Senior Vice
President BMW Group Electronics and Software. "Based
on our advanced software architecture and the fact that today our
global development teams generate 130 times more software than ten
years ago, we see ourselves in an excellent competitive position. More
than ever, our software developers can focus on product innovations."

For the Neue Klasse, the development teams are working on well over
1,000 software modules, around 40 GB of software, and over 500 million
lines of code, which will ultimately be integrated into the
Superbrains and the rest of the electronic architecture in the
vehicle. To achieve this, the BMW Group has established a solid
foundation for future-proof and highly effective vehicle software
development in recent years. Innovative methods and tools have been
anchored in the continuously growing global developer network. At the
heart of vehicle software development is the integrated developer
environment: a tailored tool-chain called "CodeCraft." The
speed and quality of development have been enhanced with the use of a
variety of tools that support the software developer with generative
AI. CodeCraft runs in the cloud on up to 75,000 virtual CPUs, supports
the simultaneous work of well over 10,000 software developers, and
records up to 200,000 software builds per day at peak times. This
corresponds to a productivity increase of more than 130 times compared
to ten years ago.

Munich, Dingolfing, Leipzig. The BMW Group is
systematically advancing the digitalisation and automation of its
production processes within the BMW iFACTORY framework. Since 2022,
the company has been testing Automated Driving In-Plant (AFW) for new
vehicles at its largest European plant in Dingolfing. Following
successful CE certification, the pilot project is now transitioning
into series operation.
In addition to Dingolfing, Leipzig is
also currently being enabled to implement the AFW project in series
operation. Other facilities in the BMW Group production network are
set to follow in stages.

“Automated Driving In-Plant optimises our production process and
delivers significant efficiency gains for our logistics,” explains
Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG
responsible for Production. “That is why we will be swiftly rolling
out this technology throughout our production network.”

In addition to the BMW 5 Series and 7 Series in Dingolfing, this
technology is now also being used for the MINI Countryman and other
BMW models in Leipzig. In Dingolfing the new vehicles drive fully
autonomously – without a driver – along a route of more than one
kilometre, from the two assembly halls, through the “short test
course”, to the plant’s finishing area. This is made possible by
sensors installed along the route – creating the largest LIDAR
infrastructure in Europe – and relying on an externally generated
environment model and an external movement planner. Regardless of the
vehicle's equipment options, this system controls its automated
movements, using state-of-the-art cloud architecture. Parts of the
technology were provided by the young Swiss company Embotech AG, which
the BMW Group already cooperated with in the early stages through its
venture client unit, the BMW START-UP Garage.

Plant Leipzig plans to introduce automated driving for around 90
percent of the BMW and MINI models built there, with Plants Regensburg
and Oxford set to follow in 2025. The new site in Debrecen, Hungary,
will also implement this technology from the official launch of series production.

Going forward, the BMW Group plans to expand its use of Automated
Driving In-Plant to other areas of production, such as for driving
through the testing zone and in outdoor distribution areas. Production
and development experts are also working closely together to refine
the technology in-house. Another key factor in expanding the
technology is the increasing use of on-board technology, which will
support the external sensors in the long term.

“Over the next ten years, we will log several million test kilometres
with Automated Driving In-Plant in our production network alone,” says
Nedeljković. “In this way, the BMW Group is once again setting a new
benchmark for automation and digitalisation of its production
processes – while paving the way for future applications in the field
of autonomous driving.”

Press Contact: Benedikt Torka
Tel: +49-151-601-32455
E-mail: benedikt.torka@bmwgroup.com

Locations,Automated Driving,Production Plants,Research & Development,ConnectedDrive,Production,Intelligent Connected Vehicles

Munich. BMW is the first carmaker in the world to
receive approval for a combination of a Level 2 driving assistance
system (the BMW Highway Assistant) and a Level 3 system in the form of
the BMW Personal Pilot L3 in the same vehicle. The new BMW 7 Series
therefore sets a milestone in the field of automated driving by
offering a unique opportunity to enjoy the benefits of both systems in
the same car.

BMW Highway Assistant (Level 2): greater comfort on long
journeys.
This advanced Level 2 feature enhances comfort
significantly on long-distance journeys especially thanks to its
ability to operate at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph). The BMW Highway
Assistant is an additional function of the Steering and Lane Control
Assistant that can be used on motorways with structurally separated
carriageways. On such stretches of road, the driver is able to take
their hands off the steering wheel for longer periods and position
them comfortably, provided they continue to pay attention to what is
happening on the road and are able to take over the steering again at
any time.

While driving in partially automated mode, the BMW 7 Series
Sedan is also able to make lane changes without the driver having to
take hold of the steering wheel again. This is made possible by the
Active Lane Change Assistant, which performs the necessary steering
movements for the overtaking manoeuvre and adjusts the vehicle’s speed
as required as soon as the traffic situation permits. Plus, the driver
is able to initiate a lane change suggested by this system by simply
looking in the exterior mirror to confirm it.

BMW Personal Pilot (Level 3): allowing other in-car activities
in traffic jams.
Highly automated Level 3 driving
means drivers can take their hands off the steering wheel and
temporarily turn their attention away from the road. The BMW Personal
Pilot L3 feature in the 7 Series offers a whole new driving experience
by enabling drivers to fully delegate the task of driving to their car
under certain conditions at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph) and look
away from the road. Highly automated systems are capable of completely
taking over the driving in specific situations, e.g. in traffic jams
on the motorway. This even lets drivers carry out other in-car
activities, such as making phone calls, reading, writing messages,
working or streaming videos. However, the driver must always be
prepared to reassume control within a few seconds when prompted by the
car, for example when there are roadworks.

The combination of all these driving assistance systems within a
single vehicle represents a significant advance and offers a
comprehensive set of functionalities for a more comfortable, more
relaxing drive over both long and short journeys. “We are setting new
standards in the automotive industry by combining both technologies in
the new BMW 7 Series,” says Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President
Driving Experience BMW Group. “In the process, we are underlining our
commitment to offering our customers a safe, comfortable and
innovative driving experience.”

The BMW Highway Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional are
both part of the optional BMW Personal Pilot L3, which is available
exclusively in Germany priced at € 6,000 (incl. VAT). Drivers of cars
equipped with the optional BMW Personal Pilot L3 that have already
been delivered will be able to add the BMW Highway Assistant to its
range of functions free of charge from 08/24.

Press Contact: Christophe Koenig
Tel: +49-89-382-56097
E-mail: christophe.koenig@bmw.de

Automated Driving,Driver Assistance,Research & Development,ConnectedDrive,Innovation,Intelligent Connected Vehicles

Las Vegas. The in-car digital experience of both
the present day and the future is the dominant theme of the BMW
Group’s presence at CES 2024. New infotainment products for the
current BMW model portfolio will be shown at the event. At the same
time, the BMW Group is demonstrating innovative development projects
that offer a glimpse into the future. Visitors can teleoperate a BMW
iX and guide it around the Silver Lot on the exhibition site,
discover as a passenger the potential offered by augmented reality
glasses during a journey and experience a new generative AI
capability of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant powered by the
Alexa large language model (LLM), enabling quick answers and how-to
responses on vehicle features.

“BMW is synonymous with both the ultimate driving machine and
the ultimate digital experience,” says Frank Weber, Member of the
Board of Management responsible for BMW Group Development. “At the
CES we are showing more content, more customisation and more gaming.
This is all underpinned by our powerful, in-house developed BMW
Operating System. And we will take a look to the future, of course,
with perfectly integrated augmented reality and strong, reliable
artificial intelligence at the interaction between human and machine.”

BMW Operating System 9 makes it possible: new gaming
experiences from the ConnectedDrive Store in 2024.

The optional “BMW Digital Premium” offering allows
BMW customers with BMW Operating System 9 to access an extended
range of products from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. As well as
on-demand functions for the vehicle, the store also offers an
ever-evolving selection of third-party apps in the categories music
& audio, news & magazines and gaming for the infotainment
system. More games are now being made available via this channel for
in-car enjoyment. And occupants will also be able to play using
proper gaming controllers in future. BMW is
presenting this new form of gaming experience for the first time at
CES 2024. For example, “Beach Buggy Racing 2” offers customers an
action-packed racing game that evokes memories of the great console
classics. Two players in the vehicle can compete against one another
in split-screen mode using their gaming controllers. Any standard
gaming controller with Bluetooth capability can be connected to the
infotainment system in just a few steps. The controller link-up will
be made available over the air for BMW Operating System 9 during 2024.

The AirConsole App already lets BMW customers play single and
multiplayer games in their car. The “casual games” offered are easy
to pick up for anyone; the user’s smartphone serves as a controller,
allowing simple control of gameplay that is quick to learn.
Additions are constantly being made to the choice of games in the
in-car AirConsole App.

BMW Digital Premium is optionally available for models with
BMW Operating System 9 and can be obtained from the ConnectedDrive
Store either online, in the MyBMW App or directly from the car. BMW
Digital Premium allows customers to enjoy in-car use of all the apps
available in their country as well as covering the necessary data
usage. And the package offers more besides, including enhanced
navigation functions and added customisation options.

Top entertainment – with the Video App in BMW Operating
Systems 8.5 and 9.

In addition to the BMW Theatre Screen with Amazon
Fire TV built-in in the rear compartment of the BMW 7 Series, BMW
customers are now able to watch a variety of video content on the
central display too*. The already very succesful TiVo operating
system for smart TVs was optimised for in-car video streaming in the
space of just a few months by developers from the BMW Group working
together with XPERI Inc. The result is the integration of the DTS
AutoStage Video Service powered by TiVo. The entertainment programme
comprises both live channels and on-demand media libraries covering
the categories news, sport, entertainment for kids, movies and TV series.

First launched in the new BMW 5 Series, the platform will now be
rolled out to further executive and luxury models over the air**.
Since the end of 2023, customers driving compact models with BMW
Operating System 9 have also been able to access the Video App with
BMW Digital Premium. These will be followed by further models over
the course of 2024, such as the BMW X2 and all models in the new
MINI family.

The Video App is currently accessible in the USA, UK, South
Korea, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, and will soon be coming to
Japan. A number of portals are available internationally, including
Pluto TV, Bloomberg, TED, Yahoo! and Chili. These are accompanied by
market-specific streaming services:

Germany: JOYN, ZDF, tagesschau, Deutsche Welle.

Italy: RaiPlay

France: TF1

USA: Tubi, Gusto TV, Journy

Japan: Hulu Japan, NHK Plus, NTV NEWS NNN, TVer, WOWOW

The portfolio of video streaming platforms will keep expanding and
will be gradually rolled out to other countries.

Ready for the wearables of the future – enhanced driving
experience with XREAL Air 2 augmented reality glasses.

The CES show also sees the BMW Group demonstrate
for the first time how augmented reality (AR) glasses are set to
enrich the driving experience in future. Visitors can test the
possible uses of AR glasses for themselves on a drive through Las
Vegas. Wearing the glasses, they can see how navigation
instructions, hazard warnings, entertainment content, information on
charging stations and supporting visualisations in parking
situations are embedded perfectly into the real-world environment by
the “XREAL Air 2”. AR and mixed reality (MR) devices will become
increasingly popular in the next few years, thanks to technological
advances and entry-level models that are more affordable for
customers. In future, AR and MR devices will be able to offer both
drivers and passengers enhanced information and enjoyable
experiences to complement the displays fitted in the vehicle.

The BMW Group has been working on the development of AR/MR
technology since 2008 and investigating possible applications for
head-mounted displays in research projects. The BMW engineers,
together with their development partners, have now succeeded in
showing stable augmented reality and mixed reality content to
passengers in a dynamically moving vehicle for the first time. The
displayed image remains securely embedded in the environment even in
challenging driving situations, such as when turning, driving over
large bumps or accelerating. To achieve this, the tracking system of
the AR/MR device in question has to be linked to the vehicle’s
sensor data.

The BMW Group has consistently built up its pool of experience
with AR/MR devices over the years and presented the results to the
public. These include the initial MINI
Augmented Vision project (2015), the collaboration with Meta
Reality Labs (2022 & 2023), the ConnectedRide
Smartglasses from BMW Motorrad and the M
Mixed Reality Driving Experience. The Augmented View function
in current BMW and MINI models shows drivers a live video stream on
the display that is augmented with additional information for
optimum guidance when using the navigation system. In the area of
highly innovative, vehicle-related XR applications, the BMW Group
has filed patents for almost 70 inventions from its developers in
recent years.

“Thanks to the recent research collaborations with Meta
Reality Labs and XREAL, we have made considerable progress in our
preparations for integrating external XR devices into our driving
experience in production models. We are proud to be leading the way
here and are well prepared to offer our customers breathtaking XR
experiences in the future,” says Peter Lehnert, Vice President
Research, New Technologies and Innovations Digital Car at the BMW Group.

“We are thrilled at the prospect of being able to digitally
embellish the real world by combining car tech with AR tech,”
comments Peng Jin, co-founder of XREAL. "And this could lead to
entirely new experiences while travelling by car and open up new
potential for AR tech.”

The BMW Group has successfully carried out pioneering work on
digital technologies in the past – such as vehicle access using the
BMW Digital Key – and has been a driving force behind the
industry-wide standardisation of such innovations. The company is
open to collaboration with further partners in the area of AR/MR
too. The goal here is to establish an industry standard for
connecting the CE industry’s XR devices with vehicles.

Development demo: BMW voice assistant becomes the ultimate
vehicle expert with the help of the Alexa Large Language Model (LLM).

At CES, the BMW Group and Amazon showcase voice
assistant LLM capabilities based on a current development
project that the companies are working on in preparation for a
potential series rollout. This makes the BMW
Intelligent Personal Assistant the ultimate vehicle expert thanks to
generative AI that is powered by the Alexa LLM. At CES, visitors
experience how the voice assistant provides quick instructions and
answers about vehicle functions in a much more human,
conversation-like manner, while at the same time being able to
control some vehicle functions.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant has been using
artificial intelligence for speech processing for a long time and
this demo is the latest proof point of the continued innovation BMW
and its partners are bringing to customers. Complex processing
capabilities, which enable human-like interactions and dialogs, have
not yet been integrated into BMW series vehicles. Such capabilities
are now made possible by LLMs, which are AI models that are designed
to process human language at a high level and generate responses
accordingly. The BMW Group is also taking careful steps to build a
safe and trusted experience for customers, and continues to test and
iterate these LLM capabilities over time with its partners.

Since the introduction of the first BMW Intelligent Personal
Assistant in 2018, language interaction has been an essential part
of BMW iDrive. Today, the voice assistant gives customers control
over many vehicle functions so that they can keep their hands on the
wheel and their eyes on the road. Leveraging Amazon’s Alexa Custom
Assistant — a solution that is based on Alexa technology and enables
companies to create their own customized voice assistant — the
next-generation of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will soon
become more powerful over the course of the year in vehicles with
BMW Operating System 9.

Joint development project with Valeo paves the way for
teleoperated valet parking.

The BMW Group and Valeo have entered a strategic
partnership to work on the joint development of next-generation
automated Level 4 parking solutions. This includes the development
of solutions for automated valet parking (AVP). Here, the customer
leaves their vehicle in a designated drop-off area. The vehicle then
searches for a vacant parking space itself, manoeuvres into the
space and later exits it again, and can even drive back to the
pick-up area for collection by the driver. Either an autonomous
driving system or a teleoperated valet system can be used as the
underlying technology for this.

CES 2024 visitors will have the opportunity to try out
teleoperated valet parking for themselves. Teleoperation offers
complete control in situations that could be very challenging for
fully autonomous systems, such as in complex or unfamiliar environments.

The teleoperator uses sophisticated technology and live camera
images to guide and move the vehicle so that it can be parked and
retrieved again in a carefully controlled manner. Possible future
applications for this technology could include parking at events, at
airports or in the logistics sector.
Munich. Level 3 highly automated driving, which
allows drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel and
temporarily divert their attention away from the road, will soon be
available in the new BMW 7 Series. BMW Personal Pilot
L3 is the name of the new function that relieves the
person at the wheel of the task of driving in certain situations and
controls the car’s speed, distance to the vehicle ahead and lane
positioning for them. This new option can be ordered for the
new BMW 7 Series (excluding the i7 eDrive50 and i7 M70
xDrive)* from December to be fitted in vehicles from next March.

Designed to assume the entire task of driving with Level 3
capability as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers
(SAE), thehighly automated driving function will be offered
exclusively in Germany priced at 6,000 euros (incl. VAT).

This innovative technology allows drivers to redirect their focus to
other in-vehicle activities when travelling at up to 60 km/h (37 mph)
on motorways with structurally separated carriageways. Thanks to its
particularly sophisticated sensors, this is the first system of its
kind that can also be used in the dark.

The introduction of Level 3 functionality in BMW 7 Series models will
make the BMW Group the first carmaker to offer both an
advanced Level 2 driving function in its product portfolio where the
hands can be taken off the steering wheel and
positioned comfortably and a Level 3 system. The
BMW Highway Assistant already offers a highly
innovative SAE Level 2 partially automated driving
function in all new BMW 5 Series models. The package
also includes a unique feature in the form of the Active Lane Change
Assistant with eye confirmation. This function is primarily designed
for use over long-distance journeys in the new BMW
5 Series, allowing the driver to adopt an extremely relaxed
posture behind the steering wheel. When travelling at up to 130 km/h
(81 mph), this additional function of the Steering and Lane Control
Assistant can take control over the car’s speed, the distance to the
vehicle in front and the car’s steering.

The crucial difference between Level 2 and Level 3 is that with Level
2 (partially automated driving) responsibility continues to lie with
the driver at all times. Whenever the BMW Highway Assistant
is in use, drivers must watch what is happening on the road
and be able to take over the task of driving again at all times. This
is continuously monitored using an intelligent attentiveness camera.

The BMW Personal Pilot L3 for Level 3 highly
automated driving in the BMW 7 Series gives drivers the option of
concentrating on secondary in-vehicle activities away
from what is happening on the road. In a BMW 7 Series with the BMW
Personal Pilot L3 activated, customers will be able to edit
e-mails, for example, or engage more deeply in telephone
calls while travelling at up to 60 km/h (37 mph). They can also use
digital services for e.g. streaming videos from various
providers on the central display during a journey. This makes
the new BMW Personal Pilot L3 the ideal solution for making good use
of time spent in slow-moving traffic or tailbacks during daily
motorway commutes.

Symbols appear on the display behind the steering wheel as
appropriate to indicate whether the BMW Personal Pilot
L3 is available. It is activated and deactivated by a button
on the steering wheel. When the function is being used, the customer
still has to be ready to reassume the task of driving at any time –
i.e. as soon as the situation on the road requires them to or the
stretch of road suitable for using the BMW Personal Pilot L3 comes to
an end. Visual and acoustic signals let the driver know they have to
take over control once more. If the driver does not respond as
required, the vehicle is brought to a controlled standstill.

The live HD map with precise routes is permanently aligned with
extremely accurate GPS location-finding and works with 360° sensors to
ensure exact positioning and monitoring of the area around the
vehicle. The live HD map is always up to the minute thanks to regular
updates. In the new BMW 7 Series, this functionality is underpinned
technologically by a new software stack, a powerful computing platform
and a 5G link-up to the BMW Cloud. Besides the cameras, vehicles
specified with the BMW Personal Pilot L3 are also fitted with
latest-generation ultrasonic sensors and radar sensors and a
highly sensitive 3D lidar sensor for monitoring the
area around the vehicle and the situation on the road.

This package of technology means that the BMW Personal Pilot
L3 works very reliably even in the dark. These various
qualities are unmatched by any rival. SAE Level 3 automated driving
helps improve both comfort and safety on public roads.

*The BMW Personal Pilot L3 is only available in conjunction with the
relevant BMW Connected Drive services. The period of validity for
these services is two years.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

Munich. The BMW Group is increasingly relying on
innovations from the fields of digitalisation and Industry 4.0 in
production logistics. This will ensure the company’s global production
network continues to receive the parts it needs in a timely and
reliable manner in the future. The focus is on applications such as
logistics robots, autonomous transport systems at plants and
digitalisation projects for an end-to-end supply chain. Staff can
control logistics processes from mobile devices such as smartphones
and tablets and use virtual reality applications to plan future
logistics. Innovations coming out of many pilot projects are being
implemented worldwide in logistics at BMW Group plants.

“Logistics is the heart of our production system. Our broad spectrum
of ground-breaking projects helps us run increasingly complex
logistics processes efficiently and transparently,” according to
Jürgen Maidl, head of Logistics for the BMW Group production network.
“We are taking advantage of the wide range of available technological
innovations and working closely with universities and start-ups. We
are already working with tomorrow’s Industry 4.0 technologies today.”

Around 1,800 suppliers at more than 4,000 locations deliver over 31
million parts to the 30 BMW Group production sites worldwide every
day. Digitalisation and innovations help the company organise
logistics more flexibly and more efficiently. At the same time, almost
10,000 vehicles coming off the production line daily must be delivered
to customers around the globe. Digitally connected delivery, so-called
Connected Distribution, ensures that these transport routes are also
more transparent.

Connected Supply Chain: Full data transparency in the supply chain

The BMW Group supply chain relies on a global supply network and
close cooperation with numerous logistics service providers. The
Connected Supply Chain (CSC) programme significantly increases supply
chain transparency. It updates the plants’ material controllers and
logistics specialists on the goods’ location and delivery time every
15 minutes. This transparency enables them to respond immediately if
delays appear likely and take appropriate steps early to avoid costly
extra runs.

Autonomous transport systems both inside and outside

Autonomous transport systems such as tugger trains or Smart Transport
Robots are increasingly used to transport goods within production halls.

To allow tugger trains to now also be used for the sophisticated
process of supplying assembly lines, as part of a pilot project, BMW
Group Plant Dingolfing has developed an automation
kit, which enables conventional tugger trains of any brand
already on hand to be upgraded to autonomous tugger trains. The
capabilities of these driverless tugger trains go beyond automation of
earlier solutions.

Another future technology is also being piloted alongside autonomous
tugger trains at the Dingolfing plant. A Smart Watch
supports logistics staff during the container change process and
announces approaching tugger trains via a vibration alarm. The
employee can also read which containers should be unloaded and send
the tugger train on to its next destination by tapping the display.

The BMW Group is also pioneering the use of autonomous transport
systems outdoors. As part of a pilot project, the BMW Group is using
an autonomous outdoor transport robot for the first time at its
Leipzig plant to bring truck trailers from where they are parked to
the unloading and loading bay on their own. A mobile platform drives
underneath the trailer, connects it and steers it through the plant.
The so-called AutoTrailer, with a payload of up to 30
tons, navigates by laser, without additional guidelines or markings,
through the plant’s outdoor areas. Sensors and cameras provide a 360°
all-round view, which forms the basis of the safety concept.

The huge potential of this transport system is particularly evident
at the BMW Group’s largest plant in Spartanburg, where about 1,200 of
these trailer-shunting manoeuvres take place every day.

Back in 2015, the BMW Group joined forces with the Fraunhofer
Institute IML to develop the first self-driving Smart
Transport Robots (STR) for transporting roll containers
through logistics areas within production halls. The second generation
is now in operation at BMW Group Plant Regensburg. The flat robots
carry roll containers weighing up to one ton and transport them
autonomously to where the goods need to be. They calculate the ideal
route independently and move freely through space. A built-in battery
module from the BMW i3 powers the STR for a whole work shift.

Loading and unloading of goods containers:
Robots take
over arduous tasks and relieve staff

After delivery to the plant, the goods are transported to the
assembly line in containers and parts containers of various sizes. For
the tiring job of reloading containers from pallets onto conveyor
belts or into storage, employees will be assisted in the future by
logistics robots specially developed for this purpose. Four different
types of robots, referred to as "Bots" by logistics experts,
are currently being tested or have already been integrated into series production.

The lightweight robots take on different jobs: they can take full
plastic boxes from the pallet in the incoming goods area and place
them on a conveyor system, they do unload tugger trains and place
boxes loaded with goods on a shelf, they collect various small parts
from appropriate supply racks and they stack empty containers on
pallets before they re-enter circulation.

Using artificial intelligence, the robots can detect and process
various different containers and determine the ideal grip point.

Smart devices support logistics staff in paperless logistics

Gloves with integrated scanners and displays, data glasses and smart
watches are increasingly used to support logistics employees. The
transition to paperless logistics, with digitally labelled containers
and shelves, opens up new areas of application for mobile devices.
Glove scanners read the electronic label and indicate the exact
contents of the small load carrier on a small display that can be worn
on the arm.

Virtual reality and artificial intelligence

The use of virtual reality already plays an important role in
planning logistics spaces. In a virtual environment, planners can
quickly and efficiently lay out future logistics areas completely and
assess how much space is needed, for instance. Planning is based on 3D
data representing the real structures of a logistics hall. For the
past several years, the BMW Group has been capturing its plants in
digital form with millimetre accuracy, using special 3D scanners and
high-resolution cameras. This creates a three-dimensional image of the
structures, so that manual recording on site is no longer needed. When
planning future logistics areas, BMW Group experts can now combine
existing data with a virtual "library" of shelves, lattice
boxes, small load carriers and around 50 other widely-used operating resources.

Connected Distribution:
Vehicle delivery transparency
from plant to showroom
Like delivery of parts to
plants, the transport of vehicles to the dealership is now also
digitally and transparently traceable. The former Connected
Distribution pilot project was fully integrated into series production
this year. The system uses the same IT built into BMW Group vehicles
to track the location of finished vehicles once they are ready to
leave the plant. The vehicle transmits its current geolocation and
status to the logistics centre via a mobile connection every time it
is switched off.

Focus on sustainability: Natural gas, electric and future
hydrogen trucks will reduce CO2 emissions

Logistics can help the BMW Group achieve its sustainability goals.
The focus here is on continuous expansion of CO2-efficient modes of
transport. More than 60 percent of all new vehicles now leave
production plants by rail.
Nevertheless, it is still necessary to
use trucks on certain in- and outbound logistics routes. To reduce
emissions from these truck journeys, the BMW Group is already using
natural gas and electric trucks in cooperation with logistics service
providers. The aim is to reduce truck emissions by 40% by 2030 and to
be completely emission-free by 2050.

Press Contact: Hanns Huber
Tel: +49-89-382-31181
E-mail: hanns.ha.huber@bmw.de

Locations,Automated Driving,Production Plants,Research & Development,ConnectedDrive,Production,Intelligent Connected Vehicles,Logistics

Shanghai. On May 14th 2018, BMW Group
officially obtained the Shanghai Intelligent Connected Autonomous
Driving Test License, issued by the Intelligent Connected Vehicle Road
Test Promotion Team - consisting of Shanghai Municipal Commission of
Economy and Informatization, Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau
and Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission.

Thus, the BMW Group has become the first international
auto maker
to obtain the Autonomous Driving road test license in
China, marking a big step on its path to Autonomous Driving.
This achievement underlines BMW Group’s leading role in the
development of autonomous driving in the Chinese automotive industry.

BMW Group implements its Strategy NUMBER ONE >
NEXT worldwide, and continues to carry out the layout in
"A.C.E.S.", namely, Autonomous Driving, Connectivity,
E-Mobility and Shared services, to create exciting solutions and
innovative mobility experiences for customers - and by doing so -
speeding up its transformation into a technology company. Autonomous
Driving, an important part of the "A.C.E.S." layout, will
change the future of individual mobility in a revolutionary way,
significantly improving the safety and convenience of premium
individual mobility.

China is promoting Autonomous Driving as a part of boosting
intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs) and its recent “smart city,
smart China” initiative, giving China a vital role in BMW Group´s
Autonomous Driving development program. BMW anticipated this
development - and was first to demonstrate and publish L3 highly
Autonomous Driving on a designated highway under government
supervision in Chengdu as early as 2016.

To carry out road tests for the preparation of L4 Autonomous Driving
R&D in China, Shanghai is an attractive, innovative city, matching
perfectly with BMW Group's vision of future mobility. The BMW Group
has set up a strong local team in Shanghai, including over 60 experts
in Autonomous Driving.

Using the license, the R&D team will gather several Petabyte of
data based on actual traffic, covering its full complexity. This data
will be used to train machine learning algorithms performing adequate
L4 Autonomous Driving behaviour.

The test sites in Shanghai currently cover a total length of about
5.6 kilometers planned to grow quickly over time. The test fleet is
based on the latest BMW 7 Series models, starting with two operating
vehicles in May and adding up to seven vehicles by December in China.
“Safety first” is the primary premise for the development of
Autonomous Driving at BMW Group. Until now, the accumulated mileage
reaches nearly 30,000 kilometers of road test in China, and more than
200,000 kilometers of computer simulation.

Dr. Martin Sautter, Senior Vice President, R&D Center BMW Group,
BMW China Services Ltd., said: “The BMW Group has always followed its
R&D strategy ‘In China, For China’. We have developed a complete,
customer-oriented and prospective R&D system, through the R&D
