Munich. Autumn 2025 adds revised powertrains, new features and practical details to the current BMW model range. The entry-level models into the world of BMW M – the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé as well as the corresponding models in the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series – will in future have more powerful and fuel-efficient petrol engines. In the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé and the BMW i4, the optional Adaptive LED Headlights will now also include laser rear lights.

More power, reduced consumption for BMW M240i xDrive Coupé and the entry-level models into the world of BMW M in the BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series.

Autumn 2025 will see both the BMW M340i xDrive Sedan (WLTP combined (EnVKV): fuel consumption 7.5 litres/100 km; CO₂ emissions 172 g/km; CO₂ class F) and the BMW M340i xDrive Touring (WLTP combined (EnVKV): fuel consumption 7.9 litres/100 km; CO₂ emissions 181 g/km; CO₂ class G) fitted with a more powerful variant of the 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line petrol engine. It now has an output of 288 kW/392 hp, with the mild hybrid system contributing 9 kW/12 hp. The overall increase in power over the previous model is 13 kW/18 hp. Maximum torque has also increased by 40 Nm, to 540 Nm.

This revised powertrain will in future also be fitted in the BMW M440i xDrive Coupé (WLTP combined (EnVKV): fuel consumption 7.7 litres/100 km; CO₂ emissions 175 g/km; CO₂ class F), the BMW M440i xDrive Convertible (WLTP combined (EnVKV): fuel consumption 7.7 litres/100 km; CO₂ emissions 176 g/km; CO₂ class G) and the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé (WLTP combined (EnVKV): fuel consumption 7.8 litres/100 km; CO₂ emissions 179 g/km; CO₂ class G).

The output increase makes for even more dynamic performance in the BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series models mentioned above. It shaves 0.1 seconds off the time it takes each model to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. As a result, the BMW M340i xDrive Sedan can now perform this sprint in just 4.3 seconds. The BMW M240i xDrive Coupé (WLTP combined (EnVKV): fuel consumption 8.0 litres/100 km; CO₂ emissions 183 g/km; CO₂ class G) now also comes fitted with this more powerful engine.

In addition to the output boost, all models benefit from a significant increase in engine efficiency. As a result, the WLTP fuel consumption of the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé, for example, drops from 8.8–8.7 litres/100 km to 8.0 litres/100 km. CO₂ emissions were likewise reduced, from the previous 200–199 g/km to 183 g/km (see table below for all fuel consumption and emissions figures of the new powertrains).

New exterior colours for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, Adaptive LED headlights available for more BMW 4 Series models, practical addition for the BMW 5 Series family.
From autumn 2025, an additional exterior colour will be available as an option for all versions of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé with the M Sport design or the M Sport package. Cape York Green can be ordered for the first time in conjunction with these trim levels.

The optional Adaptive LED Headlights for the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé and BMW i4 will also benefit from a significant upgrade. In addition to headlights that will illuminate the road evenly in every situation, this option will now also include laser rear lights. Moreover, Adaptive LED Headlights are also available as an individual option without the M Sport package Pro for the BMW 420i, BMW 420d and BMW 420d xDrive.

In conjunction with Veganza and Merino upholstery, the comprehensive standard equipment in the BMW X3 now also includes rear headrests and side sections of the second row of seats in the upholstery colour. This further enhances the premium appeal of the BMW X3 interior.

All BMW 5 Series, BMW i5 and BMW M5 Sedan and Touring models will in future offer a very handy feature. A coat hook on the B-pillar trim, provided as standard, makes transporting jackets and coats particularly easy.

Improvements related to BMW Connected Drive.
From autumn 2025, the Charging Guide in the Explore tab of the My BMW app will offer relevant help on all aspects of charging – e.g., “How do I charge?”, or “How do I optimise charging?” This helps to make charging stops as convenient and efficient as possible.

BMW Maps charge-optimised route planning for all-electric vehicles is now also available in BMW vehicles with Operating System 8 and 8.5 in Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Romania, Serbia and Singapore.

Munich. Electric drivetrain upgrades, new engine variants, as well as additional standard and optional equipment features will make the current BMW model range even more attractive and versatile in spring 2025. The use of new components for the power electronics and other measures designed to optimise efficiency have resulted in a considerably increased range for the all-electric BMW i5. Standard equipment on all BMW 5 Series models will soon include ambient lighting complete with a BMW Interaction Bar featuring a crystalline surface, lumbar support for both front seats as well as the Harman Kardon HiFi loudspeaker system. 

Two new variants of the new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé will become available in April 2025. The BMW X3 model range will likewise be expanded, with a powerful six-cylinder in-line diesel engine. Almost 50 per cent higher charging rates – that’s the news for the plug-in hybrid variants of the BMW X1, BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, BMW 7 Series and the BMW XM models. With the BMW Digital Key Plus, owners can, depending on the type of mobile device, activate up to 18 digital vehicle keys with individually configured access permissions. The new tyre repair kit Plus will become part of the standard equipment for selected BMW models from March 2025. It enables owners to continue their journey even with a tyre puncture. Adaptive LED Headlights will become part of the standard equipment for the BMW X5 and BMW X6 models in spring 2025. 

BMW i5 and BMW i5 Touring now even more energy-efficient.

From March 2025 the all-electric models of the BMW 5 Series Sedan and BMW 5 Series Touring will benefit from a number of technical advances that reduce their energy consumption. The result is a noticeably greater range, with an increase of up to 47 kilometres (depending on the model and equipment installed as part of an individual vehicle configuration). This owes much to the first ever use of silicon carbide semiconductor components in the power electronics (SiC converter) of the BMW i5 and to particularly low-rolling-resistance tyres fitted to aerodynamic alloy wheels. The optimised wheel bearings will also help save power.

19" aerodynamic wheels 1056 bi-colour are available for the first time as an option for the BMW i5 eDrive40 (combined, WLTP (EnVKV): energy consumption 18.0–17.9 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions 0 g/km; CO₂ class A) and the BMW i5 xDrive40 (combined, WLTP (EnVKV): energy consumption 18.9–18.8 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions 0 g/km; CO₂ class A).

The optimisations for the new BMW i5 xDrive40 Touring (combined, WLTP (EnVKV): energy consumption 19.5–19.4 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions 0 g/km; CO₂ class A) lower WLTP energy consumption by up to 9 per cent (depending on model and equipment installed as part of an individual vehicle configuration), while the new BMW i5 eDrive40 saves up to 8 per cent. 

Standard equipment on the BMW i5 M60 xDrive (combined, WLTP (EnVKV): energy consumption 19.5 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions 0 g/km; CO₂ class A) now includes the M Sport package Pro. In addition, the BMW 5 Series models benefit from further interior upgrades. From now on, all models include the previously optional ambient lighting with the BMW Interaction Bar featuring a crystalline surface as standard. In addition, they now come with lumbar support for both front seats, as well as the Harman Kardon HiFi loudspeaker system. The switchgear in the doors has also been upgraded and is now finished in high-gloss Black. BMW Individual Merino Leather in Black/Dark Violet is available as a new option for customising the interior.

BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé: Two additional powertrain variants.
The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé model range available from March 2025 will include a new entry-level variant. The new BMW 216 Gran Coupé (combined, WLTP (EnVKV): fuel consumption 6.4 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions 145 g/km; CO₂ class E) offers a particularly attractive introduction to the world of hallmark BMW driving pleasure. Its 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine has 90 kW/122 hp of power and a peak torque of 230 Nm. The standard seven-speed double-clutch Steptronic transmission directs engine power to the front wheels. Accelerating the new BMW 216 Gran Coupé from 0 to 100 km/h takes 9.9 seconds.

The new BMW 223 xDrive Gran Coupé (combined, WLTP (EnVKV): fuel consumption 6.4–6.3 litres/100 km; CO₂ emissions 144 g/km; CO₂ class E) adds an all-wheel drive variant with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology to the range. Its four-cylinder petrol engine and integrated electric motor deliver a total system output of 160 kW/218 hp. This powertrain adds to the car’s efficiency and is capable of particularly fast responses. The new BMW 223 xDrive Gran Coupé accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds. Production of the two new
BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé models will start in March 2025 at the BMW Group plant in Leipzig, Germany. The BMW kidney Iconic Glow is available as part of the Innovation package and enables a purposeful customisation of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé’s exterior. It provides unique visuals, especially after dark. This option can also be ordered for the BMW 1 Series.

BMW X3 40d xDrive: Especially powerful six-cylinder diesel.
A 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line diesel from the latest BMW Group engine generation will complement the BMW X3 powertrain range from May 2025. It will make the new BMW X3 40d xDrive (combined, WLTP (EnVKV): fuel consumption 6.7 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions 177 g/km; CO₂ class G) the most powerful diesel variant of this premium executive Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). Its highly efficient powertrain offers 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, a combined output of 223 kW/303 hp and 670 Nm of peak torque. The system’s electric motor is integrated into the eight‑speed Steptronic transmission. The new BMW X3 40d xDrive takes 5.4 seconds to get to 100 km/h from a standing start; its top speed is 245 km/h. It is produced at the BMW Group Plant Rosslyn in South Africa.

Higher charging rates for everyday driving without generating local emissions.
A faster AC charging rate, increased from 7.4 kW to 11 kW, will result in significantly reduced charging times for various BMW plug-in hybrid models from March 2025. This will benefit the plug-in hybrid variants of the BMW X1, BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, BMW 7 Series and all BMW XM models.

BMW Digital Key Plus as standard in the new BMW iX.

In the new BMW iX, the BMW Digital Key Plus will become the driver’s first choice for vehicle access from March 2025. The package also includes a physical key, a Setup Card and a Service Card. The new Setup Card makes installing the Digital Key Plus on a smartphone easier than ever. Users can simply hold the card close to their mobile device or scan the QR code on the back. Once activated, drivers can safely share the Digital Key Plus with others, using a simple text message. Depending on the mobile device, up to 18 digital keys can be activated soon. Different roles and permissions can be set for the vehicle when sharing the keys. For example, the vehicle’s acceleration and top speed can be limited – a particularly useful feature for novice drivers. Moreover, the BMW Digital Key Plus enables additional control functions from the vehicle’s vicinity, such as having the BMW iX enter or exit a parking space via the My BMW app. And if there ever is a need to hand over a physical key, for example for service visits or in the event of a breakdown, the new Service Card can be activated as a full-fledged key with a single click.

Other digital improvements and enhancements.
The popular YouTube* video app has been available for vehicles with BMW Operating System 9 since January 2025, provided the customer has activated BMW Digital Premium. Furthermore, the Personal eSIM in BMW Operating System 9 can now be activated for improved telephony and a WiFi hotspot in the vehicle. Vehicles with BMW Operating System 8.5 benefit from a more intuitive BMW Maps interface.

Tyre repair kit Plus: Remaining mobile the easy way.

The new tyre repair kit Plus, part of the standard equipment for selected BMW models from March 2025, enables customers to continue their journey even with a tyre puncture. This requires just a few simple steps that are explained in the vehicle’s Integrated Owner’s Handbook. The one-piece tyre repair kit includes a magnet and connector pin to secure it to the hub of the affected wheel. A hose then fills the tyre with air and aerosol sealant using an integrated compressor. Once a sufficient tyre pressure above 1.5 bar has been achieved, the journey can be continued, with the device safely attached to the wheel hub. Drivers can now

cover a range of up to 200 kilometres at a top speed of 80 km/h. This should easily get them to the nearest service centre. From spring 2025 the BMW X1, BMW X2, BMW iX and various models of the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will come with this equipment feature. The tyre repair kit Plus is also included with the models of the BMW 5 Series Sedan (except for models with standard 19-inch light alloy wheels Triplex-spoke style 933 Silver).

BMW X5, BMW X6, BMW X7 and BMW M5: Added equipment.
The comprehensive standard equipment on the BMW X5 and BMW X6 will from spring 2025 include adaptive matrix LED headlights. The BMW X7 will always come with the Parking Assistant Professional. Standard equipment for the M60i xDrive powertrain version of all three model series will also include the M Sport package Pro, the Harman Kardon surround sound system and sun protection glazing.

The BMW M5 will also benefit from more comprehensive equipment. Two new upholstery options are available to add special accents to the interior. In addition to BMW Individual Taupe Grey/Deep Lagoon Merino Leather, BMW Individual Black/Dark Violet Merino Leather is available as a new colourway. In all BMW M5 variants, as well as in all BMW 5 Series Sedan and BMW 5 Series Touring models, the trim and switches for the power windows, mirror adjustment and tailgate button are finished in high-gloss Black with a 3D effect as standard.

New light alloy wheels for BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and BMW X1.

17-inch light alloy wheels Star-spoke style 875 will be available for various BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and BMW X1 models from March 2025.

Munich. The new BMW 5 Series Touring is now on the road. The first vehicles were delivered to customers in Europe and Japan a few days ago. Now in its sixth generation, the sporty all-rounder in the premium segment of the upper mid-range vehicle segment is being launched for the first time as the all-electric BMW i5 Touring. Two models with purely electric drive and two with highly efficient four-cylinder diesel engines are available for the market launch. By summer 2024, the range of the new BMW 5 Series Touring and Sedan will be extended to include additional models with plug-in hybrid drive and an in-line six-cylinder diesel engine.

The Bavarian premium car manufacturer is systematically continuing the electrification of its model range with the BMW i5 Touring and the soon-to-be-available plug-in hybrid versions of the new BMW 5 Series Touring. The top model of the new series is the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring (Power consumption combined: 20.9 – 18.4 kWh/100 km (62 miles) according to WLTP; CO2 emissions: 0 g/km according to WLTP;CO2 class(es): A; range: 441 - 503 (274 - 313 miles)) with up to 442 kW/601 hp. At its side is the new BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring (Power consumption combined: 19.3 - 16.5 kWh/100 km (62 miles) according to WLTP; CO2 emissions: 0 g/km according to WLTP;CO2 class(es): A; range: 483 - 560 (300 - 348 miles)) with an output of up to 250 kW/340 hp and a range of up to 560 kilometres (348 miles) determined in the WLTP test cycle.

In addition, the BMW 520d Touring (Fuel consumption combined: 5.9 - 5.3 l/100 km (62 miles) according to WLTP; CO2 emissions: 154 - 140 g/km according to WLTP;CO2 class(es): E) and BMW 520d xDrive Touring (Fuel consumption combined: 6.2 - 5.7 l/100 km (62 miles) according to WLTP; CO2 emissions: 163 - 149 g/km according to WLTP;CO2 class(es): F – E) models, which are particularly popular in Europe, are now available. Their four-cylinder diesel engine is combined with 48-volt mild hybrid technology and develops a maximum output of 145 kW/197 hp.

Plug-in hybrid drive and BMW xDrive for Sedan and Touring models.

Plug-in hybrid technology will be introduced in the new BMW 5 Series Touring in summer 2024. Two models will be available. The new BMW 530e Touring (Consumption combined, weighted: 22.6 - 20.6 kWh/100 km (62 miles) and 0.9 - 0.7 l/100 km; CO2 emissions weighted combined: 21 - 16 g/km according to WLTP; fuel consumption with discharged battery 7.6 - 7.0 l/100 km (62 miles) according to WLTP; CO2 classes: with discharged battery F; combined, weighted B; electric range: 83 - 95 (52 - 59 miles)) transmits the power of its two engines to the rear wheels via an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. In the new BMW 530e xDrive Touring (Consumption combined, weighted: 23.7 - 21.7 kWh/100 km (62 miles) and 1.0 - 0.8 l/100 km; CO2 emissions weighted combined: 22 - 18 g/km according to WLTP; fuel consumption with discharged battery 7.9 - 7.3 l/100 km (62 miles) according to WLTP; CO2 classes: with discharged battery - F; combined, weighted B; electric range: 82 - 89 (51 - 55 miles)), intelligent all-wheel drive ensures optimum traction, agility and driving stability in all road conditions. This drive technology combination will also be available in the BMW 5 Series Sedan from summer 2024. The new BMW 530e xDrive Sedan (Consumption combined, weighted: 23.3 - 21.6 kWh/100 km (62 miles) and 1.0 - 0.7 l/100 km; CO2 emissions weighted combined: 22 - 17 g/km according to WLTP; fuel consumption with discharged battery 7.8 - 7.2 l/100 km (62 miles) according to WLTP; CO2 classes: with discharged battery - F; combined, weighted B; electric range: 82 - 93 (51 - 58 miles)) will be the third model variant of the four-door model with plug-in hybrid system.

The drive system of the three new models consists of a four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission, which together generate a system output of 220 kW/299 hp. The high-voltage battery provides a usable energy content of 19.4 kWh and enables an electric range of 83 to 95 kilometres (51 to 59 miles) for the new BMW 530e Touring, 82 to 89 kilometres (50 to 55 miles) for the new BMW 530e xDrive Touring and 82 to 93 kilometres (50 to 58 miles) for the new BMW 530e xDrive Sedan.

In the new BMW 5 Series Touring, there is also no loss of transport capacity when choosing a plug-in hybrid model. Thanks to the space-saving arrangement of the high-voltage battery in the underbody of the vehicle, the length, width and height of the completely flat luggage compartment are the same as those of the models with combustion engine and all-electric drive. Luggage capacity is 570 litres with all seats occupied and can be increased to 1,700 litres if required.

Available from summer 2024: Six-cylinder in-line diesel engine in the BMW 5 Series.

The range of engines available for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and Touring models will be extended in summer 2024 to include a straight six-cylinder diesel engine. The drive unit of the BMW 540d xDrive Sedan (Fuel consumption combined: 6.3 - 5.8 l/100 km (62 miles) according to WLTP; CO2 emissions: 165 - 153 g/km according to WLTP;CO2 class(es): F – E) and BMW 540d xDrive Touring (Fuel consumption combined: 6.5 - 6.0 l/100 km (62 miles) according to WLTP; CO2 emissions: 171 - 157 g/km according to WLTP;CO2 class(es): F) from the BMW Group's latest modular generation is combined with 48-volt mild hybrid technology in the form of a crankshaft starter generator. Together, the combustion engine and the electric motor integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission generate a maximum output of 223 kW/303 hp and a maximum torque of 670 Nm (494 lb/ft).

Torque is distributed fully variably to all four wheels via the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system. The dynamic power delivery of the in-line six-cylinder diesel engine and the superior power transmission are reflected in the 5.2-second acceleration time from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph), which is the same for both the new BMW 540d xDrive Sedan and the new BMW 540d xDrive Touring.

Hallmark BMW driving pleasure, a sporty appearance and modern functionality have always helped the BMW 5 Series Touring to occupy a special position in the premium segment of the upper mid-range vehicle segment. The fully electric drive of the BMW i5 Touring in the sixth model generation makes this combination even more attractive. BMW M Performance Parts will also be available for all model variants from market launch in May 2024, underlining the dynamic character of the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the new BMW i5 Touring in everyday use and on journeys.

The model-specific aerodynamic, interior and suspension retrofit products offer ideal opportunities to individually optimise the dynamic potential and athletic appearance of the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the new BMW i5 Touring. Products from the Original BMW Accessories programme are already homologated with the complete vehicle, so no separate registration with the registration authorities is required.

The BMW M Performance Parts for the exterior set individual accents in appearance and at the same time fulfil functional requirements in terms of lightweight construction and aerodynamics. They have been specially developed for the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the new BMW i5 Touring with M Sport Package or M Sport Package Pro and are perfectly matched to the geometry and design of the vehicle. For a particularly exclusive look, the M Performance front splitter is also available in high-gloss black on the left and right.

In addition to the M Performance Carbon side sill attachments, which give the vehicle's profile even more visual length and depth, the new M Performance accent stripes in Frozen Black emphasise the dynamically flowing lines of the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the new BMW i5 Touring. The digitally printed accent stripes are in matt anthracite and feature the M Performance lettering. The M Performance side sill decals, which consist of a striking curved line in matt grey, highlight the vehicle’s profile even further. The decals are located below the doors and provide an elegant colour accent, especially on the black side sills. The exclusive M Performance Frozen Black accent stripes emphasise the sporty elegance and accentuate the shoulder area along the entire length of the vehicle. The high-quality film set is road wash resistant and optimised for the vehicle geometry of the BMW 5 Series Touring and the BMW i5 Touring.

The striking M Carbon exterior mirror caps and the M Performance Aramid aerial cover provide further accents for the individual and sporty profile of the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the new BMW i5 Touring. Aramid-reinforced plastic is very similar to CFRP, but has a high electromagnetic permeability.

The three-piece M Performance rear diffuser is also made from aramid. It emphasises the powerfully designed rear of the vehicle even more impressively and also enables the luggage compartment lid to be opened and closed without touching it. The M Performance high-gloss black roof spoiler and M Performance Carbon rear fins add a touch of sportiness and elegance.

High-quality interior options bring racing flair to the cockpit.

The M Performance Carbon door sill trims are an unmistakable sign of the dynamic orientation of the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the new BMW i5 Touring. With their M Performance lettering, they are an eye-catching feature when the doors are open. For a particularly elegant first impression, M aluminium door sill trims are also available. The M Performance floor mats with leather-look edging, contrasting stitching and a seam in BMW M colours add a sporty touch to the interior. 

The M Performance key case also makes a clear performance statement on any occasion. Made from Alcantara and high quality leather in a carbon fibre look, the perfectly-fitting protective cover protects the vehicle key from scratches and is a perfect addition to the range of BMW M Performance Parts. The M Performance Carbon fuel filler cap is also available for the combustion engine and plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 5 Series Touring. It is particularly easy to fit and features M Performance lettering on brushed aluminium.

Light alloy wheels and sport brake system for optimised performance.

The M Performance light alloy wheels available for the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the all-electric BMW i5 Touring are ideally suited to a sporty driving style and make for a highly distinctive look. Both summer wheel with tyre sets and winter wheel with tyre sets in the dimensions 19, 20 and 21 inches are available.

The summer wheel with tyre set with 21-inch M Performance Cross Spoke light alloy wheels is available for all drive types in either M Bicolor Jet Black gloss finish or M Frozen Midnight Grey. For all model variants the 19-inch M Performance light alloy wheels in Y-Spoke design in Matt Black are also available as a summer wheel with tyre set. The corresponding winter wheel with tyre set, which is also suitable for snow chains with the exception of the largest wheel dimension, are also available with an extra soft tyre compound or studded tyres.

Also available for the cold season: 20-inch M aerodynamic wheel with tyre set in burnished Bicolour Midnight Grey finish. They give all variants of the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the new BMW i5 Touring a particularly exclusive touch, even in winter. Additional wheel sets are ideally stowed in the M Performance tyre bags. A reinforced handle makes it easy to transport the wheels and protects both the driver and the vehicle from dirt.

The M Performance 20-inch brake system ensures a deceleration performance worthy of the name and short braking distances. Its red-painted brake calipers featuring the four-colour M logo look particularly distinctive in conjunction with the open rim design of the 21-inch light alloy wheels. The sport brake system is fitted with six-piston aluminium fixed calipers at the front and single-piston floating calipers at the rear to provide deceleration. The large-format, internally ventilated and perforated M Performance lightweight brake discs provide improved thermal load-bearing capacity and thus deliver even higher breaking power under extreme conditions.

Munich. More dynamic than ever, brimming with digital innovations, with a spacious interior exuding a premium feel and – in the shape of the BMW i5, with a fully electric drivetrain for the first time, the new BMW 5 Series reinforces its claim to leadership in the premium executive class. For the members of the World Car Awards expert jury, it was the standout new arrival among the field of luxury vehicles which celebrated their debuts in the world’s car markets over the past 12 months. The international panel of experts therefore handed the BMW 5 Series the crown of World Luxury Car 2024. The results were announced today at the start of the New York International Auto Show 2024 as part of a ceremony broadcast worldwide via streaming services.

The success of the BMW 5 Series was underpinned by assessments carried out during extensive test drives by the around 100 car journalists from 30 countries that made up the jury. These ratings were then recorded in detail by the World Car Awards organisers. The BMW 5 Series fended off competition from a field of 13 new luxury vehicles, winning over the jury not only with the majestic power delivery from its portfolio of electrified combustion engines as well as the electric drive system, but also with its high comfort levels over long-distance journeys and numerous digital innovations. “We are very pleased to receive this prestigious award. The verdict of the international jury shows that our strong-character products with their typical BMW qualities convince and inspire demanding target groups all over the world,” said Bernd Körber, Senior Vice President BMW Brand and Product Management, Connected Company.

BMW 5 Series: Consistent electrification and digital innovations.

The BMW 5 Series displays its progressive character with its powertrain technology, its innovative digital services as well as an elegantly sporty design, generous levels of cabin space, optimised acoustic comfort and a progressive premium ambience for the interior. Advanced assistance systems like the motorway assistant and active Lane Change Assistant with eye confirmation emphasise the long-distance qualities of the BMW 5 Series. With the display and control/operation system BMW iDrive with QuickSelect, the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with extended functionality all on board, the i5 is comprehensively set up for user-vehicle interaction via touch control and natural speech. When the car is stationary, BMW 5 Series occupants can explore the extensive video streaming offering on the control display and enjoy a new form of in-car gaming – e.g. to make use of the time when the high-voltage battery is charging.

As a fully integrated member of the new BMW 5 Series model range, the BMW i5 offers locally emission-free driving pleasure. The driving dynamics and efficiency of the BMW i5 have their roots in fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology. This comprises highly integrated drive units and high-voltage batteries with extremely high energy density. In addition, the latest evolution of adaptive recuperation and an intelligent combination of heat pump technology for heating and cooling the interior, drive system and high-voltage battery help the car to achieve a range of up to 582 kilometres (362 miles) in the WLTP cycle, depending on the model and specification. The Combined Charging Unit of the BMW i5 enables AC charging at a rate of up to 22 kW and DC charging at up to 205 kW. This means the car’s range can be boosted by up to 156 kilometres (97 miles) within just 10 minutes when plugged into a fast-charging station.

The entire combustion engine portfolio has also been electrified. A flexibly designed drive architecture that was open to different technologies from the outset enables the new BMW 5 Series Sedan to be offered for the first time as an all-electric model, with plug-in hybrid systems and with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines. The combustion engines from the new modular generation of BMW Group Efficient Dynamics engines all feature the latest version of 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

BMW wins title number nine in the World Car Awards.

The World Car Awards were created 20 years ago to stand alongside national and regional distinctions as an acknowledgement of outstanding innovations and new products in car markets worldwide. This year, the awards were presented in a total of five categories in addition to the overall prize.

Over the years, BMW has collected eight wins in the World Car Awards. One of the victors was the BMW 7 Series, which was crowned World Luxury Car in 2016 already. In 2018, the title of World Performance Car was presented to the BMW M5. This ninth title win for the Bavarian premium carmaker is the latest in a long line of distinctions amassed by the new BMW 5 Series over the past few months. For instance, the all-electric version alone adds to the trophy collection with a total of three „Car of the Year“ awards from Norway, Denmark and Italy.

Dingolfing. BMW Group Plant Dingolfing has today celebrated the official start of production for the new BMW 5 Series Touring. The newcomer is the first premium vehicle in its segment to feature not just a petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid drive but also a fully electric one. That makes the BMW i5 Touring the fourth all-electric model to enter series production at Plant Dingolfing in not even three years.

“Our BMW 5 Series Touring is especially important for Germany and the European market, and a lot of customers have been waiting for it,” said Plant Director Christoph Schröder. But at the end of May, the wait will be over, because that’s when the new Touring – now in its sixth generation – will reach dealers’ showrooms and the first cars are handed over to customers. The new model is already available to order now.

Since launching the first generation in 1991, Plant Dingolfing in Lower Bavaria has been the sole producer of the BMW 5 Series Touring, with more than 1.2 million rolling off its production lines over the years. Like its predecessor, the new BMW 5 Series Touring – irrespective of drive – is manufactured flexibly alongside the BMW 5 Series Sedan and BMW 4 Series and 6 Series models, all on a single production line. Investments in the plant for the new BMW 5 Series Touring amount to approx. 80 million euros.

“For us here in Dingolfing, the BMW 5 Series is part of our DNA,” explained Plant Director Christoph Schröder, “and the launch of the new Touring represents the next step in the renewal of our successful model series.” Last year BMW 5 Series vehicles accounted for about a third of output from Dingolfing. But with the Touring now available, numbers could rise significantly in 2024, potentially nearing the 50 percent mark.

BMW Group Plant Dingolfing

BMW Group Plant Dingolfing is the BMW Group’s largest European production facility. Every day it produces more than 1,500 vehicles, with the BMW 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, 8 Series and the all-new BMW iX rolling off the production lines. In 2023 output totalled some 292,000 units.

Currently the site employs over 18,500 people and has 900 trainees learning 15 professions. That makes it not just by far the largest employer in the region but also one of the largest industry and vocational training bases in Germany.

As well as producing vehicles, Dingolfing manufactures components such as pressed parts and chassis and drive systems. The component plant 02.20 is home to the BMW Group’s Centre of Excellence for e-drive production, which supplies BMW Group plants worldwide with the electric motors and high-voltage batteries they need to produce plug-in hybrid and fully electric models.

Plant Dingolfing also manufactures bodies-in-white for all the Rolls-Royce models. Its so-called Dynamics Centre, a huge warehouse and reloading point, is the heart of central aftersales logistics at the BMW Group and delivers original BMW parts and accessories to BMW and MINI trade organisations worldwide.

Munich. With a brace of victories in the “Best Cars” competition, BMW has backed up its successful end to 2023 with a similarly fruitful beginning to 2024. The BMW 2 Series Coupé wrapped up class victory in the compact segment for the third time in succession, while the BMW X1 led the way in the “compact SUV” category. The “Best Cars” award – voted on by readers of German motoring magazine “auto, motor und sport” and in its 48th edition this year – is one of the most prestigious in the European automotive industry. Almost 100,000 respondents took part in the survey, selecting one overall winner and one “imported car” champion from a field of 455 models across 13 vehicle categories.

The start of 2024 was also marked by class victory for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan in the “Large Car” category of the “Women's Worldwide Car of the Year” award. 75 female automotive journalists from 52 countries picked out their favourites from a total of 62 vehicles in five categories. Intended to showcase the influence of women in the automotive industry and presented for the 14th time this year, this prize takes into account factors such as safety, quality, price, design, ride comfort, everyday usability and environmental impact. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan won over the jury members with its electrified drive system line-up (including the fully electric BMW i5), as well as its spaciousness, advanced technology and now fully vegan interior.

This successful beginning to the year saw BMW building on its run of success in a large number of awards in 2023. Models from the premium brand’s current range claimed numerous prizes in both its home market of Germany and its most important sales regions internationally. The winners stretched across all the relevant categories, with compact models, luxury vehicles and high-performance sports cars from BMW M GmbH all making waves. As well as vehicles powered by combustion engines, the readers and juries also recognised a strikingly high number of representatives from BMW’s constantly expanding electric mobility range.

“We’re very proud that our various BMW vehicles have won awards in so many national and international competitions. This also shows that we have attractive models in all segments that excite people,” says Jochen Goller, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Customer, Brands, Sales. “The response to our models with all-electric drive systems is particularly pleasing. This ties in with the strong demand from customers and supports the BMW Group’s commitment to ramping up electric mobility in all areas.”

Newcomer to the ranks of high-performance models and a fully electric Sports Activity Vehicle both win a “Golden Steering Wheel”.

The “Golden Steering Wheel” presented by German publications “Auto Bild” and “Bild am Sonntag” is one of the most prestigious distinctions in the European car industry. BMW took two of these coveted trophies back to Munich in 2023. The BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 10.4 – 10.1 l/100 km [27.2 – 28.0 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 235 – 229 g/km in the WLTP cycle) ranked first in the “sports cars” category and the fully electric BMW iX1 topped the “compact class”.

Both models added a string of other international awards to their collections over the course of 2023. For example, the first ever BMW M3 Touring – which combines the dynamic prowess of a high-performance car with impressive levels of practicality – was elected sports car of the year in the category for vehicles costing up to 120,000 euros by readers of “Auto Bild Sportscars” magazine. And acclaimed British TV programme “Top Gear” honoured the BMW M GmbH newcomer with the title “All The Car You'll Ever Need” in its “Car of the Year” awards.

The BMW iX1 collected a trio of awards in China, including “All-Electric Premium SUV of the Year”. It also won the French “Automobile Award 2023” in the “Green Tech” category and the “autonis Award” bestowed by readers of “auto, motor und sport” to the year’s most attractive new design.

Fully electric BMW i5 enjoys immediate success around the world.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan and BMW i5 also claimed an “autonis” prize. Now also available with a fully electric drive system for the first time, the new edition of the world’s most successful business sedan was also named “Car of the Year” by Portuguese magazine “Frontline”. The BMW i5 was also presented with equivalent awards in Norway and Denmark, both particularly important markets for electric vehicles. Norwegian daily “Dagbladet” teamed up with online portals “DinSide” and “Elbi24” to celebrate the BMW i5. While in Denmark, the i5 fought off competition from six other models to gain the most votes for “Car of the Year” in a final round made up exclusively of fully electric models. The jury of 20 Danish motoring journalists chose the BMW i5 as their winner by a large margin.

Chinese publication “Auto World” crowned the BMW i5 as “Most Anticipated Premium Executive Sedan of the Year”, and the fully electric business sedan also collected three awards in Great Britain: “The Car Expert” put the BMW i5 in top spot in its “Best Large Car Award”, it was named “Premium Car of the Year” in the “2024 Electrifying.com Awards” and the “Comfortable Cruiser” topped its class in Carwow’s “Car of the Year Awards 2024”.

The awards underscore the ability of the new BMW i5 Sedan to win people over with numerous different qualities: from character-rich design, a unique balance between sportiness and comfort, innovative equipment features and progressive digital services to a drive system whose power is matched by its capability over long distances. And it also uses latest-generation BMW eDrive technology to transfer the brand’s signature dynamic ability to the road with zero local emissions. In addition, adaptive recuperation and an intelligent combination of heat pump technology for heating and cooling the interior, drive system and high-voltage battery help to give the BMW i5 eDrive40 Sedan (electric power consumption, combined: 18.9 – 15.9 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) a range of 498 – 582 kilometres (309 – 362 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

BMW’s electric mobility offensive is recognised with awards.

The BMW brand’s fully electric model line-up as a whole enjoyed a successful year worldwide in 2023. As well as the BMW iX1 and BMW i5, this was particularly true of the BMW i7 and BMW i4. In Great Britain alone, these two models were both among the winners in seven awards. Both won the “Auto Express New Car Award” in their respective vehicle classes. The BMW i4 also claimed the “Pocket-lint Award” and “Business Car Award”, and the BMW i7 celebrated success in both the “What Car? Electric Car Awards” and the “What Car? Car of the Year Awards”. The fully electric luxury sedan racked up five prizes in China, too, including the “Car of the Year” distinction from leading online magazine “sohu.com”.

There was also much to celebrate in France and the USA, where the BMW i7 was given the “Best Overall and Best Value” rating from “Money” magazine and praised by “wards auto” magazine for its standout luxury ambience and digital user experience with BMW Theatre Screen in the rear compartment. Renowned US magazine “car and driver” named both the BMW i4 M50 (electric power consumption, combined: 22.5 – 18.0 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) and BMW i4 eDrive40 M50 (electric power consumption, combined: 19.1 – 16.1 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) among the “Best 10” of 2023.

Top marks and distinctions for the BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series ranges, the BMW M2 and the BMW X3.

BMW set the seal on a successful year in Germany with a two-pronged triumph. The BMW 3 Series and BMW X3 closed out 2023 with class victory in the coveted “Auto Trophy”. The BMW 3 Series Sedan and BMW 3 Series Touring, for example, took clear victories in the hotly contested midsize segment of the readers’ survey conducted by German title “Auto Zeitung”, racking up 19.0 per cent of the vote. This was the seventh class win in a row for the 3 Series. Meanwhile, the rugged aura, interior spaciousness and commitment to electrification of the BMW X3 helped it account for 15.3 per cent of the votes cast and therefore the highest points total in the high-volume vehicle segment of “SUVs costing 30,000 – 60,000 euros”.

The BMW 3 Series was a particularly prolific award-winner in Great Britain. In the “Business Car Awards”, the 3 Series won the “Best Premium Car” prize, and it also gained entry to the “Hall of Fame” of “Fleet News” magazine as the “Most Reliable Company Car”. The BMW 3 Series won twice in the “What Car? Used Car Awards”, topping both the “Used Executive Car” category and overall “Used Car of the Year”. And then there was the “Best Used Hybrid Executive Car” distinction for the BMW 330e Sedan (fuel consumption, combined: 1.9 – 1.4 l/100 km [148.7 – 201.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption, combined 20.1 – 18.1 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 43 – 32 g/km in the WLTP cycle). The plug-in hybrid model also tasted success in the USA, where “Money” magazine described it as “Best for Handling”.

Adding to the wave of success enjoyed by the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 4 Series – with its standout sporting appeal – also enriched the brand’s glittering international reputation in the premium midsize segment. The best example of this came in the BMW 4 Series Coupé and BMW 4 Series Convertible’s showing in the “What Car? Car of the Year Awards” in Great Britain. The closed-roof two-door won the “Coupe of the Year” for the third year in succession in 2023. And this year its open-top sister model also won the “Convertible of the Year” award.

Two other British awards were claimed by the BMW M2. It was voted “Best Performance Car” in “The Car Expert Awards”, and the compact high-performance sports car also took the title of “Performance Car of the Year” in the “Auto Express New Car Awards”.

The BMW 5 Series Touring, the epitome of driving pleasure, sporty elegance and modern functionality in the premium upper mid-range segment, is entering a new era. The sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series Touring is more progressive than ever, featuring numerous digital innovations, pioneering systems for automated driving and parking, increased sustainability throughout the entire product life cycle and, for the first time, an all-electric drive in the form of the BMW i5 Touring. The new BMW 5 Series Touring is a sophisticated all-rounder for everyday driving and touring, offering stylish presence, superior sportiness, versatility and spacious comfort.

A flexible drive architecture allows model variants with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines, plug-in hybrid systems and purely electric drive systems to be produced on a single production line at the BMW Group's Dingolfing plant. The launch in Germany, many other European countries and Japan will begin in May 2024, with other markets to follow in June 2024.

Stretched proportions, strong front, individual rear.

Dynamically stretched proportions and generously designed surfaces characterise the exterior of the new BMW 5 Series Touring. Compared to its predecessor, the new BMW 5 Series Touring is 97 millimetres longer (5,060 millimetres), 32 millimetres wider (1,900 millimetres) and 17 millimetres higher (1,515 millimetres). The new BMW 5 Series Touring has the longest wheelbase in its class, increasing by 20 millimetres to 2,995 millimetres.

The distinctive front end features a modern interpretation of the hallmark twin headlights and BMW grille. Two almost vertical LED elements serve as direction indicators and daytime running lights respectively. The BMW grille, which projects far forward, features optional BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting. In the side view, the flat window graphics and the long roof spoiler emphasise the sporty, elegant 2-box design. Powerfully sculpted rear wheel arches, together with the flat rear window, emphasise the car's wide stature. An L-shaped chrome bar divides the LED rear light elements, which extend well into the side sections.

The range of paintwork includes three BMW Individual paint finishes. The standard equipment of the new includes light alloy wheels in 18-inch and 19-inch sizes for the all-electric and the plug-in hybrid models. Up to 21-inch alloy wheels are available as an option. The dynamic character of the new BMW 5 Series Touring can be further emphasised with the M Sport Package, M Sport Package Pro and M Carbon Exterior Package options. As the top model in the series, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring (combined power consumption: 20.8 - 18.3 kWh/100 km (62 miles) according to WLTP) comes as standard with exterior components that clearly express its outstanding driving dynamics.

Progressively designed cockpit, fully vegan interior.

At the heart of the progressive, driver-oriented cockpit design is the BMW Curved Display. Its 12.3-inch Information Display and the Control Display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches form a fully digital display network. The modern premium ambience in the interior is further enhanced by the new sports seats fitted as standard, the steering wheel, which is now flatter at the bottom, and the optional BMW Interaction Bar.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring has a completely vegan interior as standard. The seat surfaces in the Veganza version are also optionally available with a decorative perforation. Further optional equipment includes BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery in several bi-colour variants. Other highlights of the optional equipment programme include the panoramic glass roof and the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System with up to 18 loudspeakers.

Optimised functionality for everyday use, leisure and travel.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring offers more space and noticeably more leg, shoulder and elbow room, especially in the rear, as well as optimised acoustic comfort. With its versatile interior and numerous intelligent functions, the new BMW 5 Series Touring is just as impressive on the road as it is in everyday use.

A wider luggage compartment opening combined with a low sill makes it easy to stow large items of luggage. Regardless of their drive technology, all variants of the new BMW 5 Series Touring have a luggage compartment volume that can be expanded from 570 to up to 1,700 litres. In addition to the automatic tailgate operation, remote unlocking of the 40 : 20 : 40 split rear seat backrest from the luggage compartment is also standard. Storage compartments under the load compartment floor provide space for the luggage compartment partition net, luggage compartment cover and charging cable for the all-electric and plug-in hybrid models.

All-electric BMW i5 Touring available in two variants from the start.

The new BMW i5 Touring is the first all-electric premium model in its competitive field. It will be available in two versions from the outset. In the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring, two highly integrated drive units on the front and rear axles together form an electric all-wheel drive with up to 442 kW/601 hp. With M Launch Control or M Sport Boost activated, the system torque is increased to 820 Nm (605 ft-lb). The top model accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds and its top speed is electronically limited to 230 km/h (143 mph). The electric motor of the BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring is located on the rear axle (combined power consumption according to WLTP: 19.3 to 16.5 kWh/100 km (62 miles)) and generates a maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp and a maximum torque of up to 430 Nm (317 ft-lb) with Sport Boost or Launch Control function. The BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.1 seconds.

In both models, the high-voltage battery located in the underbody provides a usable energy content of 81.2 kWh. In addition to the efficient electric motors, adaptive recuperation and heat pump technology for heating and cooling the interior, drive and high-voltage battery contribute to the long-distance capability of the BMW i5 Touring. The range determined in the WLTP test procedure is 445 to 506 kilometres (277 to 314 miles) for the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring and 483 to 560 kilometres (300 to 348 miles) for the BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring.

Innovative charging solutions from BMW Charging.

The battery can be charged with alternating current with an output of up to 11 kW as standard and up to 22 kW as an option. The high-voltage battery can be charged with direct current with a power of up to 205 kW. Anticipatory thermal management for the high-voltage battery optimises efficiency when using fast-charging stations. Connected Home Charging for the all-electric and plug-in hybrid models creates the conditions for solar and load-optimised as well as cost-optimised charging. The BMW i5 Touring is also suitable for the Plug & Charge Multi Contract function.

New diesel engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

All diesel engines available for the new BMW 5 Series Touring are combined with 48-volt mild hybrid technology and an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. The four-cylinder engine of the BMW 520d Touring models available at market launch (combined fuel consumption: 5.9 - 5.3 l/ 100 km (62 miles); CO₂ emissions:
154 - 141 g/km according to WLTP) and BMW 520d xDrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 - 5.7 l/ 100 km (62 miles); CO₂ emissions: 163 - 149 g/ according to WLTP) generates a maximum output of 145 kW/197 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). The drive portfolio will be supplemented by an in-line six-cylinder diesel engine in summer 2024. At the same time, two model variants with the latest generation of plug-in hybrid drive will follow.

The ideal balance between sportiness and travelling comfort.

Driving pleasure in the new BMW 5 Series Touring is based on an ideal balance between sportiness and travelling comfort. With the longest wheelbase in the competitive segment, large track widths, an almost perfectly balanced 50 : 50 axle load distribution, intelligent lightweight construction and optimised rigidity of the body-chassis connection, it offers the ideal conditions for this. The extensively enhanced suspension technology includes sport steering, directly controlled wheel slip limitation and the latest version of the integrated braking system as standard. The BMW i5 Touring and the plug-in hybrid models also feature rear-axle air suspension including automatic self-levelling.

An M Sport Suspension, an M sport braking system and the Adaptive Chassis Professional (standard in the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring) with electronically controlled shock absorbers, Integral Active Steering and new lateral dynamics management are available as optional equipment. The Adaptive M Chassis Professional with Active Roll Stabilisation and Active Roll Comfort is also available for the top model.

Innovative systems for automated driving and parking.

The systems for semi-automated driving and parking available as standard or as an option for the new BMW 5 Series Touring set standards in the competitive environment with their range of functions reliability and everyday benefits. The highlight of the range is the optional Driving Assistant Professional including Steering and Lane Control Assist and Distance Control with Stop & Go function. In the US, Canada and Germany, the Highway Assistant is available, which relieves the driver of steering tasks on highways with structurally separated directional lanes. At driving speeds of up to 130 km/h (85 mph) it is possible to take your hands off the steering wheel and position them comfortably as long as you keep a close eye on the traffic. The system also includes the unique Active Lane Change Assistant with eye activation.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring features the Parking Assistant including start monitoring, Trailer Assistant and Reversing Assist Camera as standard. With the optional Parking Assistant Professional, automated parking and manoeuvring up to 200 metres can be controlled from outside the car using a smartphone.

BMW iDrive with "QuickSelect", video streaming, AirConsole games.

The enhanced BMW iDrive display and operating system based on BMW Operating System 8.5 offers a redesigned home screen and the "QuickSelect" quick access function. The combination of the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is consistently designed for touchscreen and natural language operation. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus includes the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps. The BMW Live Cockpit Professional option includes the BMW Head-Up Display and an augmented view on the Control Display or the instrument cluster.

The infotainment system in the new BMW 5 Series Touring is complemented by a range of attractive digital services. The Connected Package Professional offers a choice of YouTube and the Video app with international and country-specific content for streaming video on the Control Display. The new BMW iDrive also enables the use of an innovative form of in-car gaming with the AirConsole platform.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring is equipped with two 5G mobile phone antennas as standard and four as an option. This ensures optimum reception for telephony and online services. The standard equipment also includes optimised smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay^® and Android Auto™. The standard Personal eSIM fully integrates the vehicle into the customer's digital ecosystem. With the Remote Software Upgrades function, the new BMW 5 Series Touring always stays up to date with the latest software. It is also possible to test and rebook selected functions in the BMW ConnectedDrive Store.

Woodcliff Lake / Munich. BMW will return to the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 11, 2024 with a new 60-second advertisement for the all-new generation of the iconic BMW 5 Series, highlighted by the first-ever, 100%-electric BMW i5. The star-studded commercial entitled “Talkin’ Like Walken,” also features another icon –  Hollywood icon Christopher Walken – along with actress Ashley Park (Emily in Paris, Beef, Joy Ride), and GRAMMY^® Award Winning global superstar and Super Bowl LVIII halftime performer, USHER.

The 60-second spot plays off of Walken’s instantly recognizable voice and signature speech cadence, following the actor throughout a typical day as he encounters a never-ending stream of imitators – from his hotel valet, his tailor, makeup artist, and even his drive-through barista. Initially confused by the mimics, Walken grows increasingly frustrated. The spot culminates in a chance encounter with USHER, with Walken asking: “Don’t you got somewhere to be?” “Talkin’ Like Walken” is set to air during the first quarter of Super Bowl LVIII.

“I really enjoyed working with BMW, they are a wonderful company and electric cars are important,” said Walken. “I look forward to sharing the work we did together.”

“It’s an honor of a lifetime to perform at the Super Bowl and so great to work with BMW,” said USHER. “Making the commercial was a cool experience, and I hope you all enjoy it.”

BMW’s lead U.S. creative agency, Goodby Silverstein & Partners (GS&P), created the comical campaign. It was directed by two-time Academy Award–nominated director Bryan Buckley, who is acclaimed for his work on close to 70 Super Bowl commercials. Famed cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema (Oppenheimer and Interstellar) directed the photography.

“When you think about the perfect Super Bowl ad, you quickly realize that there’s a recipe for success,” said Marcus Casey, Chief Marketing Officer, BMW of North America. “Not that it’s easy, but if you start with an exciting new product, an A-List Hollywood star, a great script, and a talented team, and add to that mix, the multitalented Ashley Park, and a global superstar such as USHER, you have the makings of a hilarious, memorable spot.”

In the lead-up to the big game, BMW released two teasers for the spot. The first, “Agent,” poked fun at the tradition of Super Bowl ad teasers with Walken quizzically asking his agent, “So it’s an ad for an ad?” A second, follow-up teaser titled “Singing” featured Walken driving the electric BMW i5 while listening to USHER’s hit song, “Yeah!”, foreshadowing the singer’s surprise appearance.

“Christopher Walken is iconic, as is the BMW 5 Series. It’s one icon working with another, creating a synergy of two legendary figures. You wait your whole life to make a campaign like this,” added Rich Silverstein, Co-Chairman and Co-Founder of GS&P. “The reality is everyone has a Walken impression. But there’s only one original.”

The campaign will also involve social media extensions including a TikTok activation which challenges creators to give their own spin on a Walken impression to get all of social media #TalkinlikeWalken.

Munich. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5, developed exclusively for China and produced in China, will hit the country's roads just a few weeks after their debut at the Auto Guangzhou 2023 motorshow. The new edition of the world's most successful business sedan will be available in China for the first time with both highly efficient combustion engines and all-electric drive.

The models, which have been specially tailored to the needs of the Chinese target groups, feature a 12 centimeter extended wheelbase and different proportions compared to the versions offered worldwide, as well as market-specific equipment features and digital services. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China thus offer a combination of sporty elegance, luxurious rear space and a progressive user experience which is unique in their segment. The new models will be produced exclusively for the Chinese market at the Dadong plant operated in Shenyang by the joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd.

Around two million units of the BMW 5 Series Sedan have been sold in China since the start of local production in 2003. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China are based on the eighth generation of the series. With their design and technology, they are ideally placed to continue the success story that recently saw the BMW 5 Series Sedan become the best-selling premium model in its segment on the Chinese car market.

Petrol engines with 48-volt mild hybrid system and BMW eDrive technology.

The drive portfolio of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan for China is characterised by consistent electrification. It includes four-cylinder petrol engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology and an output of 140 kW/190 hp for the new BMW 525Li Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 6.5 litres/100 km (62 miles); CO₂ emissions combined: 155 g/km according to CLTC) with 190 kW/258 hp for the BMW 530Li Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 6.8 litres/100 km (62 miles); CO₂ emissions combined: 163 g/km according to CLTC). The all-electric drive of the new BMW i5 eDrive35L Sedan (power consumption combined: 14.8 kWh/100 km (62 miles) according to CLTC) generates a maximum output of 210 kW/286 hp.

In addition, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Sedan model produced for the global market (power consumption combined: 16.3 kWh/ 100 km (62 miles) according to CLTC) is offered in China. Its drive system consists of one electric motor on the front axle and one on the rear axle, which generate a combined maximum output of 442 kW/601 hp in My Mode SPORT. The outstanding performance characteristics of this model are enhanced by a unique suspension technology and M specific design features.

Two equipment packages are available for all model variants produced exclusively for the Chinese automotive market. The M Sport Package emphasises the dynamic character of the sedan with unique design features. These include M specific versions of the front air intakes, the side sills and the rear apron as well as 19-inch M light alloy wheels. Alternatively, the Luxury Line option underlines the car's premium, elegant character with 19-inch bi-colour alloy wheels and interior trims in Ash Grey Blue veneer wood finish with silver accents.

Distinctive proportions, exclusive design features.

The individual proportions of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China are reflected not only in the extended wheelbase, but also in the roofline, which flows gently into the rear. Market-specific paint finishes and gold-coloured design accents on the exterior are specifically tailored to the style preferences of Chinese customers in the premium segment.

Another exclusive detail is the illuminated Chinese character for the number 5 in the area of the Hofmeister kink counter-swing on the C-pillar. In the new BMW i5, it emits blue light signals that pulsate discreetly and at a low frequency while the high-voltage battery is charging.

Progressive luxury in the interior: BMW Curved Display, BMW Theatre Screen.

The enhanced BMW iDrive with "QuickSelect", the BMW Curved Display and the functions of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which have been specially tailored to the needs of Chinese customers, enable convenient and intuitive interaction between driver and vehicle. In the rear of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China, model-specific seats and the BMW Theatre Screen ensure outstanding travel comfort. A wireless charging station for compatible smartphones in the rear and market-specific digital services for infotainment and online communication also contribute to the progressive luxury ambience.

The semi-automatic driving and parking systems offered for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 in China are characterised by exceptional functionality, availability and reliability. These systems have been specially adapted to suit Chinese traffic conditions and driver behaviour. The highlight of the range is the Active Lane Change Assistant with eye activation.

Uncompromising quality through artificial intelligence in production.

With the start of production of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China, the Dadong plant of the joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd. is using innovative production processes. For example, artificial intelligence (AI) is used in the body shop and paint shop to optimise quality control.

In this way, the Shenyang plant is systematically continuing its transformation into the BMW iFACTORY based on the principles of "lean", "clean" and "digital". The use of 100 per cent renewable electricity in the production of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 ensures efficient and resource-conserving production. Other factors contributing to the reduced CO₂ footprint of the new model generation include the increased use of secondary raw materials and a completely vegan interior.

Munich. Digital, dynamic and, for the first time, fully electric as a BMW i5. The new generation of the BMW 5 Series sets standards, including when it comes to vehicle safety. Independent institutes in Europe, the USA and Korea each gave the BMW 5 Series Sedan top marks. The testers were impressed by both the active assistance systems and passive safety.

5-star rating at Euro NCAP.

The independent safety experts from the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) awarded the eighth generation of the BMW 5 Series Sedan the highest rating of five stars.

The extensive standard equipment with safety-relevant driver assistance systems makes a significant contribution to the 5-star rating. All driver assistance systems used in the new BMW 5 Series are among the best on the market and impressed Euro NCAP safety experts with their range of functions and reliable responses.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan also scored points in the area of passive safety with its innovative integrated safety concept, which was constantly being further developed by BMW. In addition to highly resilient support structures and precisely designed deformation paths, a model-specific combination of precisely coordinated restraint systems is used.

The Euro NCAP assessments are a Europe-wide recognized standard for accident safety and are constantly being further developed. An award with the highest rating of five stars goes exclusively to vehicles that have excellent impact protection and are also well equipped with comprehensive and practical technology to prevent accidents.

TOP SAFETY PICK+ Award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the USA.

The US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety also gave the best rating with a rating as TOP SAFETY PICK+. The standard assistance system for preventing frontal accidents was particularly convincing here, which achieved excellent ratings in both day and night tests. In combination with the lighting system, the “plus” in the TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating was decisive. It is the highest award that this institute awards.

In various collision tests, the integrated safety concept of the new BMW 5 Series also proved to guarantee that comprehensive protection against injuries is always guaranteed regardless of the size and sitting position of the occupants.

The test procedure of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is the standard for the comprehensive safety assessment of new vehicles on the American market, which is important for the BMW 5 Series, and an essential basis for decisions by fleet customers in the USA. 

“Safest Car of the Year” at KNCAP in South Korea

In the Republic of Korea, the Ministry of Transport awarded the BMW i5 the “Safest Car of the Year” award. Only the vehicle that scores the highest number of KNCAP points in the respective year receives this award. At the official presentation of the award in Korea, Dominik Schuster, Head of Vehicle Safety at the BMW Group, emphasized the importance of this award: “Top KNCAP ratings underline our safety-focused development process and prove the BMW Group's commitment to continuous improvement of vehicle safety.”

The independent testers were particularly impressed by the performance of passive safety. They saw 99.5% of these met. In Korea full points were still scored for emergency braking systems to protect pedestrians and cyclists. Some driver assistance systems also received the maximum rating.

The title “Safest Car of the Year” impressively demonstrates the BMW Group's pioneering role in one of the world's most important individual markets for the BMW 5 Series Sedan.

Munich. Following the initial sales launch in South Korea, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the first BMW i5 Sedan are now coming to dealers in numerous other markets. In Germany, the first vehicles will be delivered to customers from 21 October 2023. The market launch also begins in the other European countries on the same day. One week later, on 28 October 2023, the new edition of the BMW 5 Series will make its road debut in the USA. The other global markets will follow on 25 November 2023.

The eighth generation of the world's most successful business sedan will also be offered for the first time as an all-electric BMW i5. Even before sales have begun, incoming orders show that this model variant in particular is meeting with high customer demand and will thus further accelerate the ramp-up of electric mobility pushed by BMW. Right from the start, customers can choose from two variants of the BMW i5. The new BMW i5 eDrive40 Sedan (power consumption combined: 18.9 - 15.9 kWh/100 km according to WLTP) features an output of up to 250 kW/340 hp and a range of 498 to 582 kilometres determined in the WLTP test cycle. The top model of the entire series is the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Sedan with up to 442 kW/601 hp (power consumption combined: 20.6 – 18.2 kWh/100 km according to WLTP).

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan emphasises its progressive character not only with the two all-electric model variants, but also with innovative digital services for in-car gaming, audio and video streaming, among other things, as well as with particularly high-grade driver assistance systems. The highlight in the field of systems for automated driving and parking is the Highway Assistant, which now also enables drivers in Germany to take their hands off the steering wheel for a longer period of time at speeds of up to 130 km/h and place them in a comfortable position, provided they continue to keep a close eye on the traffic situation and are able to take over from the system again at any time if necessary.

The intensive experience of semi-automated driving is complemented by the Automatic Lane Change. With this globally unique function, a glance in the exterior mirror is enough to trigger a lane change, which is then carried out automatically by the system.

The new generation of the BMW 5 Series Touring will celebrate its world premiere in spring 2024. The second body variant of the new BMW 5 Series will be available with the same range of drives as the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. This means that the new BMW 5 Series Touring is the first premium car of its kind to be offered with highly efficient combustion engines including 48-volt mild hybrid technology, plug-in hybrid systems and, for the first time, an all-electric drive. The unique combination of sporty elegance, modern functionality and locally emission-free driving pleasure is developed specifically for the automotive markets in Europe as well as in Japan and Taiwan.

Munich. Alongside its elegantly sporty design and the new arrival of an electric drive system (in the BMW i5), the all-new BMW 5 Series Sedan captures the imagination most prominently with its wealth of digital innovations. The Bavarian premium carmaker is accompanying the market launch of the forward-looking business sedan – now in its eighth model generation – in Germany on 21 October 2023 with a similarly innovative launch campaign focusing on both a digital-first approach and the digital evolution of classical advertising media.

The new BMW 5 Series brings advanced, electrified drive technology together with pioneering driver assistance systems and digital services, which both enhance comfort and safety and drive forward cockpit digitalisation. In order to present these innovations, which will strike a chord with technophile target groups in particular, in an appealing and customer-oriented way, BMW has infused the campaign with both emotionally rich storytelling and editorial content examining visionary functions. A key element of this approach is the new brand innovation campaign centred around a genial group of guardian angels, whose job is made significantly easier by e.g. the new BMW Proactive Care service.

Trailblazing digital services and features inspire innovative launch campaign.

BMW Proactive Care is a revolutionary service set to be launched at the same time as the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. It detects the servicing requirements of BMW vehicles using artificial intelligence (AI), among other things, and proactively offers solutions to the customer without them having to take action themselves. From Condition Based Servicing to digital tyre diagnostics, from Battery Guard to accident detection as part of the automatic emergency call feature, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan is able to identify servicing requirements or a need for assistance in many different ways and report them to BMW via a suitable communication channel in line with the customer’s preferences.

The new service pledge is just one of many innovations with which BMW is once again breaking new ground in the use of digital technology. The new display and control/operation system BMW iDrive with QuickSelect – based on BMW Operating System 8.5 – offers features including hosting capability for broad-based audio & video streaming services and a totally new form of in-car gaming. Added to which, the new Highway Assistant with Active Lane Change Assistant enables extensive semi-automated driving. For example, the driver can take their hands off the steering wheel in certain situations and position them comfortably, provided they continue to monitor attentively what is happening on the road.

Awareness campaign with a wide reach via TV, out-of-home, print and radio.

The innovative orchestration of the Germany-wide launch communications, which major in video content, reflects the progressive character of the new business sedan in eye-catching style. While the storytelling approach highlights the new features of the BMW 5 Series Sedan, editorial advertising formats explore them in greater depth with the help of detailed information.

The campaign kicked off on 13 October with the “Guardian Angels” TV commercial enjoying premium placement on ARD. The prime slot immediately before the Tagesschau news magazine at 8.00 p.m. offers an excellent advertising environment and the potential to reach a particularly large and engaged target group. This strategy also comprises a 30-second commercial on all wide-coverage public and private channels. Placement on linear television is complemented by targeted programmatic actions on addressable TV (ATV). This is the first time ATV has been included as a campaign element and combines the benefits of TV and digital advertising. For instance, it appeals above all to people who have not previously been contacted by the campaign. As well as the TV commercial, all the other films in the “Guardian Angels” series will also be available from classical online media libraries such as Sky or SevenOne Media and via video portals like YouTube. An additional highlight in the pipeline are two ad integrations during UEFA Champions League football match broadcasts in the autumn.

Innovative orchestration opens up new channels and target groups for BMW.

By placing ads in a handpicked selection of high-reach business and automotive podcasts, BMW is also employing a new and tailored approach to contacting target groups: bringing in another suitable audio channel for the audience at hand to complement classical radio advertising.

The campaign also features out-of-home measures including head-turning digital advertising media, which create a modern and innovative presence in the public space across Germany. Added to which, prominent daily fixed placements with large-surface video integrations in a variety of relevant online magazines, such as Der Spiegel, T-Online and Manager Magazin, team up with an expansive social media campaign covering the market launch on 21 October 2023 to ensure a far-reaching digital media presence. An attention-grabbing print campaign including large-scale formats and advertorials in news, business & technology publications, as well as national daily newspapers, provides a further boost.

Munich. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan now offers the entire range of electrified drive technology. Just a few weeks after the market launch of the all-electric BMW i5 and the combustion engine variants equipped exclusively with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, two plug-in hybrid models will already be launched in November 2023. The BMW 530e Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 0.8 - 0.6 litres/100 km (62 miles); combined power consumption: 21.7 - 19.9 kWh/100 km (62 miles); combined CO₂ emissions: 17 - 13 g/km according to WLTP; data according to NEDC: -) The BMW 550e xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 1.0 - 0.8 litres/100 km (62 miles); combined power consumption: 23.2 - 21.6 kWh/100 km (62 miles); combined CO₂ emissions: 23 - 19 g/km according to WLTP; data according to NEDC: -) can be ordered as of now. They are available in Germany at the recommended retail price of 65,300 euros (incl. VAT) for the new BMW 530e Sedan and 77,300 euros (incl. VAT) for the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan.

In the eighth generation of the world's most successful business sedan, the plug-in hybrid models are characterised by extremely spontaneous power delivery, clearly increased efficiency and a significantly increased electric range. Both models feature the latest BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid systems, which is combined in the BMW 530e Sedan with a four-cylinder petrol engine and in the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan with an in-line six-cylinder petrol engine from the BMW Group's latest Efficient Dynamics modular generation.

Highly integrated drive unit with particularly high efficiency.

The electric motor, specially developed for the hybrid drive, is also integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission together with its power electronics. The highly integrated drive unit is particularly efficient and contributes up to 145 kW/197 hp (BMW 550e Sedan) or 135 kW/184 hp (BMW 530e Sedan) to the maximum system output of the two plug-in hybrid sedans.

In combination with the latest generation of BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid models, the 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol engine in the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan generates a system output of up to 360 kW/489 hp and a maximum system torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft). The plug-in hybrid system puts its power to the road by means of BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. It sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62 miles) in 4.3 seconds. The maximum speed of the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan is electronically cut off at 250 km/h (155 mph). A maximum speed of 140 km/h (87 mph) is possible in purely electric operating mode.

The new BMW 530e Sedan has a 2.0-litre in-line four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and, together with the highly integrated e-drive unit, generates a maximum system output of 220 kW/299 hp. With a maximum system torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft), the new BMW 530e Sedan accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62 miles) in 6.3 seconds. The top speed is 230 km/h (143 mph), and up to 140 km/h (87 mph) in fully electric mode.

Increased range and high agility thanks to innovative BMW technologies.

A patented BMW innovation is used in the new plug-in hybrid models to increase the power development of the electric motor: The nominal torque of up to 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) is increased to a torque of up to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) by a pre-transmission, which is effectively applied to the engine-side transmission input. In this way, the compact electric motor generates additional drive torque that would otherwise only be possible with a larger electric motor. The additional torque is clearly noticeable both when accelerating and during intermediate sprints.

The electric range is now 83 to 90 kilometres (49 - 56 miles) according to WLTP for the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan and 93 to 103 kilometres (54 to 62 miles) according to WLTP for the new BMW 530e Sedan. Longer commutes are therefore also possible without producing any local emissions. Both plug-in hybrid models also owe their excellent electric range to their aerodynamic properties. As in all other variants of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, special panelling and air deflection elements contribute to an optimised underbody structure that minimises air resistance. Special attention was also paid to aerodynamically optimising the underbody, in order to additionally reduce CO₂ emissions and increase the electric range by up to ten kilometres.

When driving, the latest version of adaptive recuperation helps to recover electrical energy during overrun and braking phases. Thanks to intelligent networking, the drive control system can use navigation data and information from sensors of the driver assistance systems to adjust how much power is recuperated according to the respective traffic situation.

The space-saving arrangement of the lithium-ion high-voltage battery in the vehicle underbody has a positive effect on both the vehicle's centre of gravity and the luggage compartment. With a total of 520 litres, the storage volume of the plug-in hybrid models is just as large as that of the purely combustion engine powered variants. The high-voltage battery provides an increased usable energy content of up to 19.4 kWh. The maximum charging power has been doubled compared to the previous models and is now 7.4 kW, so that the high-voltage battery can be charged from zero to 100 percent of its capacity within 3 hours and 15 minutes. At a conventional household socket, the charging process is completed within 11 hour and 45 minutes.

Extensive range of standard equipment and equipment highlights.

Both the new BMW 530e Sedan and the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan feature an extended range of standard equipment compared to the models with 48-volt mild hybrid technology. In addition to 19-inch light alloy wheels, it also includes BMW IconicSounds Electric. In purely electric operating mode, this system provides a very special soundscape: Every movement of the accelerator pedal is accompanied by authentic acoustic feedback. The transparent and spherical sounds were developed in a cooperation between the BMW Group and the renowned film music composer Hans Zimmer.

The BMW 550e xDrive Sedan also comes as standard with Adaptive Chassis Professional, which includes electronically controlled shock absorbers and a lowered suspension as well as Integral Active Steering. It makes manoeuvring more comfortable, enhances agility at medium speeds and conveys confidence when changing lanes and cornering at higher speeds. 

The BMW Interaction Bar combines modern functionality and fascinating design as part of the ambient lighting equipment. The strikingly backlit functional unit with crystalline surface structure extends across the entire width of the instrument panel far into the door panels and includes touch-sensitive control panels for controlling ventilation and air conditioning and for activating the hazard warning lights.

Munich. At the IAA Mobility 2023 international motor show in Munich, the BMW Group will be presenting the most recent highlights of its ongoing transformation in the key action areas of electrification, digitalisation and circularity. The latest new models with electrified powertrains from the BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad brands, plus Vision Vehicles and concepts for individual mobility in tomorrow’s world all serve to underline the company’s innovative strength in these fields. As the dawn of a new era in personal mobility approaches, the BMW Group is set to unveil its latest highlight, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, which brings together the Group’s development expertise in the three crucial disciplines for the future of mobility.

The IAA Mobility show is being staged in Munich for the second time. For the BMW Group and its brands, this provides an excellent opportunity to enter into constructive dialogue on the future of individual mobility with local people, as well as with visitors to the show from outside Munich and other stakeholders. The IAA Mobility Summit at the exhibition centre and the BMW Group’s Open Space at Max-Joseph-Platz in the heart of Munich will be the main arenas where BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad present their new products on 5 – 10 September 2023. Electric, digital, circular – the focus areas of the BMW Group.

The BMW Group’s presence at IAA Mobility 2023 revolves around the company’s rigorous focus on electric, digital and circular mobility for the future and the latest progress it has made in these areas. The BMW Vision Neue Klasse is joined by a selection of new models from across the Group’s brands whose electrified powertrains, digital innovations and resource-efficient manufacturing illustrate the ongoing process of change in a variety of ways.

The new products poised for launch by the BMW brand include the plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 5 Series. The new BMW i7 Protection – the first ever all-electric protection vehicle in the luxury sedan segment – is also making its debut at IAA Mobility 2023.

MINI is unveiling the members of the brand’s new model family for the first time with the help of two world premieres: the new fully electric MINI Cooper and new fully electric MINI Countryman will both be on show at the Open Space site. A new model with all-electric drive also forms the centrepiece of BMW Motorrad’s line-up at Max-Joseph-Platz. Conceived as a compact eParkourer with a trailblazing design, the new BMW CE 02 injects fresh impetus into the urban mobility scene.

Locally emission-free mobility sets the theme for the models on show.

The IAA Mobility show will be officially opened on 5 September at Munich’s exhibition centre. The BMW Group will be represented at its stand in Hall A2, where the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will be unveiled to kick off the event. The BMW i7 Protection all-electric protection vehicle will also be presented for the first time at the IAA Mobility Summit.

The IAA Mobility Summit is taking place under the banner “Experience Connected Mobility” and is aimed primarily at trade visitors. It will showcase trends and technological innovations for future mobility over the course of numerous talks, presentations and panel discussions. One of the central topics is the use of hydrogen as an energy source for current and future vehicles. BMW is carrying out pioneering work in this field with its development and practical testing of a Sports Activity Vehicle with a hydrogen-powered fuel-cell drive system. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is also being exhibited at the Summit.

Locally emission-free mobility is also the dominant theme for the models awaiting visitors to the Open Space site. BMW has at least one purely electrically powered representative in all relevant model segments. The brand is presenting its entire line-up to the public, ranging from the BMW iX1 compact Sports Activity Vehicle via the BMW i4 and BMW i5 to the BMW iX and the BMW i7 luxury sedan.

The Open Space at Max-Joseph-Platz can be visited free of charge on 5 – 9 September from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday 10 September from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, BMW Welt will continue to provide an attractive destination for all automotive enthusiasts during IAA Mobility 2023. The current model portfolios of the BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad brands are presented here, along with the latest BMW and MINI Lifestyle collections. World premiere: the BMW Vision Neue Klasse.

At IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Group is offering visitors a preview of the Neue Klasse – the forthcoming generation of models from BMW. The BMW Vision Neue Klasse brings together innovations from the areas of electrification, digitalisation and circularity in signature BMW style. The Vision Vehicle takes design, control/operation, efficiency and sustainability into a whole new dimension – one that it will be possible to experience on the road before long.

During IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will be on show at both the Summit and the Open Space. The new Vision Vehicle incorporates the latest innovations in the BMW Group’s key future-focused fields. It therefore builds on the BMW i Vision Circular and the BMW i Vision Dee – which have already demonstrated the BMW Group’s development expertise in the areas of circular economy and digitalisation – and combines their qualities with further new developments in exterior and interior design, user experience and powertrain and battery technology.

World premiere: the plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan.

As well as the all-electric BMW i5, the brand is exhibiting two other model variants with electrified powertrains at IAA Mobility 2023. As early as spring 2024, two models featuring state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology will be added to the new BMW 5 Series Sedan range. Their six-cylinder and four-cylinder in-line petrol engines from the new modular generation of Efficient Dynamics units will each be combined with the latest BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid systems. This will result in a notable increase in output and much sharper power delivery, while also significantly improving efficiency and electric range compared to the outgoing model generation.

The electric motor purpose-developed for the new plug-in hybrid system is integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission together with its power electronics. The highly integrated drive unit contributes up to 145 kW/197 hp to the maximum combined output of 360 kW/489 hp in the case of the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 1.1 – 0.8 l/100 km [256.8 – 353.1 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 22.5 – 20.1 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 24 – 19 g/km in WLTP cycle, provisional figures) and 220 kW/299 hp for the new BMW 530e Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 0.8 – 0.6 l/100 km [353.1 – 470.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 21.4 – 18.9 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 19 – 14 g/km in WLTP cycle, provisional figures).

A BMW-patented innovation has been used to enhance the electric motor’s power delivery in the new plug-in hybrid models: a pre-gearing stage enables the nominal torque of 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) to be increased to effective torque of up to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) at the transmission input for the motor. The compact electric motor is therefore able to boost torque by an amount that would normally only be possible using a larger unit and makes a clear difference both when accelerating off the line and putting in a rapid burst of speed. Electric range is now up to 79 – 90 kilometres (49 – 56 miles) in the WLTP cycle for the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan and 87 – 101 kilometres (54 – 63 miles) in the WLTP cycle for the new BMW 530e Sedan.

The lithium-ion high-voltage battery’s space-saving positioning within the vehicle’s underbody has a beneficial effect on both the car’s centre of gravity and the capacity of its luggage compartment, which holds a total of 520 litres in the plug-in hybrid models – meaning it is just as large as that offered by their purely combustion-engined siblings. The usable energy provided by the high-voltage battery has climbed to 19.4 kWh. At the same time, maximum charging capacity has doubled compared to the outdoing models and now stands at 7.4 kW, enabling the high-voltage battery to be fully recharged from empty in 3.0 hours. When hooked up to a conventional domestic power socket, a full vehicle charge is completed in 9.8 hours.

World premiere: the BMW i7 Protection.

BMW is presenting a new generation of protection vehicles in the luxury sedan segment at the IAA Mobility 2023 show. The new BMW i7 Protection (electric power consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 30.0 kWh/100 km, provisional figure) is absolutely unique in this segment, as it is the world’s first ever certified protection sedan with an all-electric drive system. Driven by two powerful electric motors, it meets all the requirements of class VR9 protection without any limitations, as does the new V8-engined BMW 7 Series Protection (fuel consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 14.6 l/100 km [19.3 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions: 328 g/km, provisional figures).

Both models blend the integrated protection concept channelled into the development of the new BMW 7 Series range with outstanding levels of ride comfort and spaciousness, advanced equipment features and the unbeatable dynamic prowess for which BMW is renowned. The concept centres around the new and unique BMW Protection Core, which forms a self-supporting body structure made from armour steel. This is then combined with features such as additional armouring for the underbody and roof, plus armoured glass. The result is customised protection from attacks with firearms or explosives for at-risk individuals. The glass in the new protection vehicles even meets the requirements for the highest class of civilian protection, VPAM 10.

The all-electric BMW i7 Protection is equipped with one electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear. Together they generate a combined output of 400 kW/544 hp and maximum combined torque of 745 Nm (549 lb-ft), and create an electric all-wheel-drive system. The new BMW i7 Protection sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in 9.0 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 160 km/h (99 mph). The instantaneous, precisely orchestrated power delivery from the two motors guarantees exceptional traction and directional stability even when the car is being driven hard and performing challenging manoeuvres, such as when escaping from an attack.

Tuned and optimised specifically for this model, the chassis technology also makes allowance for the additional weight of its armouring, resulting in superbly assured performance in any situation. Another unique offering for this segment is the inclusion of Integral Active Steering as standard. This reduces the car’s turning circle, increases agility when cornering at speed and improves driving comfort for rear-seat passengers. The 20-inch light-alloy wheels are a further standout feature. The PAX tyres that also come as standard allow the car to continue its journey at up to 80 km/h (50 mph) even in the event of a total loss of pressure.

The latest generation of BMW iDrive based on BMW Operating System 8.5 is fitted, complete with the BMW Curved Display. The system is intuitive to use and operates in a way familiar to BMW drivers. The special functions relevant to occupant protection are also operated via BMW iDrive. The new protection vehicles can also be tailored precisely to any purpose, with items including a fresh-air supply system, a fire extinguishing system, flashing lights, radio transceivers and flag poles for when the car is on official duty, plus other special customer-specific options.

Trailblazing: the BMW iX5 Hydrogen.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen presented at IAA Mobility 2023 provides further evidence of the company’s superlative innovative strength in the field of drive technology. A pilot series of the Sports Activity Vehicle with hydrogen fuel-cell drive, developed on the basis of the current BMW X5, has entered service for demonstration and test purposes with various target groups around the world. This allows selected test groups who haven’t been involved in the development process to get behind the wheel of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen and gain a direct impression of its attributes for the first time.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is equipped with the latest, fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology. The highly integrated drive unit at the rear axle draws its energy from a high-performance battery with li-ion technology that was specially developed for the hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle and generates maximum output of 295 kW/401 hp. The electric motor also doubles as a generator that feeds energy back into the high-performance battery on the overrun or under braking.

The model’s two 700-bar tanks made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) together hold six kilograms of gaseous hydrogen and can be refilled in three to four minutes. A chemical reaction takes place in the fuel cell system between the hydrogen and oxygen from the air, through which the electric power for the electric motor is generated. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen achieves a range of 504 kilometres (313 miles) in the WLTP cycle without having to refill the tanks. The hydrogen-powered SAV completes the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in under six seconds and goes on to reach a top speed in excess of 180 km/h (112 mph).

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen combines long-distance capabilities and short refuelling stops with zero tailpipe emissions and hallmark BMW driving dynamics. Its hydrogen fuel-cell technology has the potential – provided the necessary basic conditions are in place – to serve as an additional pillar in the BMW Group’s future powertrain portfolio. As part of its ongoing transformation, the BMW Group is following an approach that embraces all technologies when it comes to drive systems. The company is therefore readying itself for differing customer requirements, infrastructure standards and political and regulatory frameworks in the various regions of the world. This degree of flexibility puts the BMW Group in a position to react quickly to changing requirements in the markets in any situation and to present as many customers as possible with an appropriate model offering at all times.

Munich. Ever since the first model generation, the BMW 5 Series Sedan has been characterised by refined sportiness and high-level long-distance comfort. The new, eighth model generation of the world's most successful business sedan also highlights its dynamic performance character with its athletic proportions. The BMW M Performance Parts, which will be available in time for the market launch of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the all-electric BMW i5 in October 2023, specifically enhance its sporty appearance. The aerodynamic, interior and chassis parts range offers many options for high-performance customizing.

Perfectly coordinated: The M Performance Carbon parts.

The high-quality BMW M Performance aerodynamic and exterior components make the sporty, elegant business sedan look even more athletic. They have been specially developed for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 with
M Sports Package or M Sports Package Pro and suit the geometry and design of the vehicle perfectly. Original BMW M Performance aerodynamic and exterior parts are always tested and approved according to the strict BMW Group quality guidelines. As they have already been homologated with the complete vehicle, it is not necessary to register them with the regulatory authorities.

All Carbon components are made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP), sealed with clear lacquer to achieve a high-quality finish, and give the 5 Series models a sharp and sporty look from all angles. At the front and rear of the body, the four-part M Performance Carbon front attachment as well as the M Performance Carbon Pro rear spoiler and the three-part M Performance rear diffuser made of aramid fiber ensure a distinctive, racing-oriented look. A primed M Performance rear spoiler is also available as an option.

In addition to the M Performance Carbon side skirt attachments, which give the profile of the vehicle even more visual length and depth, the new M Performance accent stripes in Frozen Black emphasise the dynamically flowing lines of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5. The digitally printed accent stripes are in matt anthracite and feature the M Performance lettering.
The M Performance side skirt films, which consist of a striking curved line in matt grey, are also new to the range and highlight the vehicle’s profile even further. The films are located below the doors and provide an elegant touch of colour, especially on the black side skirts. The striking decorative stripe also harmonises perfectly with the M Performance accent stripe in Frozen Black and the
M Performance Carbon side skirt attachments.

The range of high-quality exterior parts is rounded off by the Carbon M exterior mirror caps and the M Performance Aramid antenna cover. The antenna cover made of aramid fiber-reinforced plastic is a visual and at the same time functional highlight on the vehicle roof. Aramid fiber has a similar surface appearance to carbon fiber but has a high electromagnetic permeability. The innovative material enables full functionality of the antenna in combination with a sporty look.

High-quality interior options add to the racing feel in the cockpit.

As soon as you open the doors, the M Performance Carbon door sill plates make a striking statement and show unmistakably that the new business sedan is oriented towards dynamic performance. In addition, the M Performance velours floor mats with their synthetic leather edging and decorative stitching in contrasting colours also add a sporty touch to the footwell. The two front mats of the four-piece set also feature embroidered M Performance lettering on the fabric insert and a flag in the hallmark M colours. The velours floor mats perfectly match the existing M Performance product range and round off the high-quality appearance.

The M Performance key case also makes a clear performance-oriented statement. The perfect-fit protective cover made of high-quality nappa leather is a pleasure to hold and features carbon fiber effect embossing combined with Alcantara. The function keys can be accessed freely so that the key does not have to be taken out of its case.

The M Performance Carbon fuel filler cap is also available for the combustion engine and plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. It has double-sided adhesive tape on the inside and can be attached to the existing fuel filler cap by the customer.

Light alloy wheels and sport brake system for optimised performance.

The M Performance light alloy wheels available for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the all-electric BMW i5 are ideally suited to a sporty driving style and make for a highly distinctive look. The range for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 includes 19 and 21-inch wheel sets. The summer wheel with tyre set with 21-inch M Performance Cross-spoke light alloy wheels is available for all drive types in either M Bicolor Jet Black gloss finish or M Frozen Midnight Grey.

For all model variants the 19-inch M Performance light alloy wheels in Y-Spoke design in matt black are also available as a summer wheel with tyre set. With the exception of the BMW i5 M60 xDrive, the corresponding winter wheel with tyre set, which is also suitable for snow chains (power consumption combined: 20.6 - 18.2 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km according to WLTP) is available for all drive variants of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. Additional wheel sets are stowed in style in the M Performance tyre bags. The four-piece set is suitable for wheels sized 17 to 22 inches and features M Performance lettering.

The M Performance 20-inch brake system delivers the deceleration power required for a sporty driving style. Its red-painted brake calipers featuring the four-colour M logo look particularly distinctive in conjunction with the open rim design of the 21-inch light alloy wheels. The sport brake system uses six-piston aluminium fixed-caliper brakes at the front and single-piston fist-caliper brakes at the rear. The large-format, internally ventilated and perforated M Performance lightweight brake discs provide improved thermal load-bearing capacity and thus deliver even higher breaking power under extreme conditions, for example on the race track.

Munich. Sporty elegance, groundbreaking technology and luxurious space at the rear are combined in the model variants of the new ##BMW 5 Series Sedan## and the new BMW i5 which have been specially developed for the Chinese automotive market. Adapted in numerous details to the specific requirements of Chinese target groups, the versions of the new business sedan feature a 12 centimeter extended wheelbase and distinctive proportions. This results in particularly generous space and comfort in the rear, which is further enhanced by exclusive equipment features.

For the first time, the BMW 5 Series Sedan for China will be offered not just with highly efficient combustion engines but also with an all-electric model in the form of the BMW i5. The car’s progressive character is also reflected in the further developed BMW iDrive featuring “QuickSelect”: with its BMW ##Curved Display## and China-specific digital services, this enables an innovative form of interaction between human being and automobile.

The new ##BMW 5 Series Sedan## and the new ##BMW i5## for China are based on the eighth generation of the world’s most successful business sedan. More than 10 million BMW 5 Series vehicles have been produced since 1972. The BMW 5 Series continues to grow in popularity in China too, with some 530,000 vehicles of the series having been delivered to Chinese customers from 2020 to 2022 alone. This makes the BMW 5 Series Sedan the market leader in the premium upper mid-range vehicle segment. A total of around two million units have been sold since the start of local production in China.

The fourth generation of model variants specially developed for China is being launched in the form of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5. The new models will be produced exclusively for the Chinese market at the Dadong plant operated in Shenyang by the joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd.

Distinctive proportions, exclusive design features.

Right from the outset, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China have been designed with a clear focus on the needs of Chinese target groups. Its exterior design combines signature brand features with innovative elements, ensuring it is oriented towards the stylistic preferences of a young generation of customers in China who value inspiring charisma and individual flair. A characteristic combination of dynamic performance and elegance gives the new models a distinctive and emotional appearance.

The upright front section of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China signals a self-confident presence. It features a modern interpretation of BMW’s hallmark twin headlights and a BMW radiator grille that extends far forward with striking contour lighting. The side view is dominated by clear-cut, amply designed surfaces. Distinctive proportions are ensured by a roofline that slopes gently to the rear combined and a wheelbase that is extended compared to other variants of the new business sedan available worldwide. At the powerful rear of the new models slim LED lights divided by a chrome strip add a powerfully expressive accentuation.

An innovative lighting design likewise contributes to the inspiring appearance of the new models. The interior lighting, the LED headlights, the contour lighting of the BMW radiator grille and the light carpet in the entrance area create a carefully coordinated, five-stage welcome and goodbye scenario. One exclusive detail of the models designed for the Chinese market is the number “5" illuminated as standard in the area of the Hofmeister kink on the C-pillar. On the new BMW i5 its blue light pulsates discreetly and at a low frequency while the high-voltage battery is charging. With other engines the number lights up in white.

Luxurious ambience and intelligent technology in the interior.

The interior of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 for China is both modern and luxurious due to design features and technological innovations that were first presented in the new BMW 7 Series and the BMW iX. With the BMW Curved Display, the redesigned steering wheel, the BMW Interaction Bar and the further developed BMW iDrive with “QuickSelect”, intelligent interaction between human being and automobile is raised to a unique level in the BMW 5 Series segment. With Crafted Clarity glass applications for selected controls and a Titanium Bronze inlay for the passenger side instrument panel, the cockpit acquires an exclusive flair that is specifically oriented towards Chinese styling.

The ride experience at the rear is characterised by generous legroom and exclusive details. Another comfort feature adopted directly from the luxury sedans of the BMW 7 Series is the BMW Theatre Screen: with its 31.3-inch panoramic display, 8K resolution and 5G connectivity, it enables a high-quality video streaming experience during travel. In combination with the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, the BMW Theatre Screen transforms the rear of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the new BMW i5 into a private cinema on wheels. Other features include 4-zone automatic climate control, a model logo embossed into the headrests, and seat surfaces with exclusive quilting and bicolour design.

The market launch of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will begin in October 2023. The new model generation will be offered worldwide with all-electric drive and, depending on the market region, also with plug-in hybrid systems as well as with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines including 48-volt mild hybrid technology. Like all previous model generations, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan is produced at the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, where the electric motors and high-voltage batteries for the BMW i5 are also manufactured.

Sporty elegance and striking presence with a new design language.

A clear and reduced design language emphasises the new 5 Series Sedan’s sporty elegance and presence. Compared to the predecessor model, the new edition has grown in length by 97 millimetres to 5,060 millimetres, in width by 32 millimetres to 1,900 millimetres and in height by 36 millimetres to 1,515 millimetres. Its wheelbase was lengthened by 20 millimetres to 2,995 millimetres.

The front view of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan is characterised by a modern interpretation of the twin headlights and BMW kidney grille. LED elements arranged almost vertically serve as turn indicators and daytime driving lights. The BMW kidney grille, which projects far forward, features a wide surround and optional BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting.

In the side view, the high shoulder line, powerfully designed surfaces and two precisely traced character lines shape the vehicle’s athletic body. Black side skirts, flush-mounted door openers and an embossed number 5 at the base of the C-pillar are further eye-catchers. The dynamically stretched proportions flow into a powerful rear end. Flat rear lights divided by a chrome strip interpret the hallmark L-shape expressively.

The dynamic character of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan can be further enhanced with the optional M Sport Package, the M Sport Package Pro and the M Carbon exterior package. The range of paintwork already includes three BMW Individual paint finishes at market launch.

Driving pleasure and travel comfort combined with innovative flair.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan offers ideal conditions for enjoying hallmark BMW driving pleasure in everyday traffic and a high level of comfort on long-distance journeys. Generous space, modern functionality, a high level of acoustic comfort as well as high-quality, precisely processed materials, fine workmanship and advanced digital services characterise the ambience in its interior.

The cockpit of the new BMW 5 Series has a significantly reduced number of buttons and controls compared to the predecessor model. This is achieved by consistently digitalising functions. The BMW Curved Display reinterprets the brand's hallmark idea of driver orientation. The fully digital display system consists of a 12.3-inch Information Display and a 14.9-inch Control Display. The steering wheel has also been redesigned with a flattened lower section and haptic feedback on the control panels, and the selector lever on the centre console. The optional BMW Interaction Bar is another highlight. The effectively backlit functional unit with crystalline surface structure extends across the entire width of the instrument panel far into the door panels and includes touch-sensitive control panels.

A first at BMW: Fully vegan interior.

Newly designed sports seats are standard equipment. The optional comfort seats offer a wide range of electrically operated adjustment options. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan is the brand's first model to feature a fully vegan interior as standard. This includes the surfaces of the seats, the dashboard and the door panels, as well as the steering wheel for the first time. The seat surfaces in the Veganza version with leather-like properties are also optionally available with a decorative perforation. Further optional equipment includes BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery in several bicolour variants.

All-electric BMW i5 M60 xDrive as the top model.

The all-electric BMW i5 is equipped with extensively enhanced fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology and is being launched in two variants. The BMW i5 M60 xDrive (combined power consumption according to WLTP: 20.6 - 18.2 kWh/100 km (62 miles)), which combines an up to 442 kW/601 hp drive with hallmark M performance and specific design features. Two highly integrated drive units on the front and rear axles make up an electric all-wheel drive. The system torque generated is up to 820 Nm (605 lb-ft) when M Sport Boost or the M Launch Control function is activated. This enables the BMW i5 M60 to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.8 seconds, its top speed is electrically limited to 230 km/h (143 mph).

The BMW i5 eDrive40 (combined power consumption according to WLTP: 18.9 - 15.9 kWh/100 km (62 mph)) is also available. Its electric motor drives the rear wheels and generates a maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp and a maximum torque of up to 430 Nm (317 lb-ft) with Sport Boost or Launch Control function. The BMW i5 eDrive40 accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds, its top speed is
193 km/h (120 mph).

The space-saving high-voltage battery is located in the underbody and provides a usable energy content of 81.2 kWh. In addition to the efficient electric motors, the latest version of adaptive recuperation and an intelligent combination of heat pump technology for heating and cooling the interior, drive and high-voltage battery contribute to the long range. The respective WLTP values are 455 - 516 kilometres (282 - 320 miles) for the BMW i5 M60 xDrive and 497 - 582 kilometres (309 - 361 miles) for the BMW i5 eDrive40. With the new MAX RANGE function, the range can be increased by up to 25 percent if required by limiting power and speed and deactivating comfort functions.

Innovative eCharging solutions from BMW Charging.

The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) of the BMW i5 enables AC charging with an output of up to 11 kW as standard and up to 22 kW as an option. The high-voltage battery can be charged with direct current with a power of up to 205 kW. For example, the battery charge level in the BMW i5 can be raised from 10 to 80 percent in around 30 minutes.

The new Connected Home Charging is offered for the BMW i5 as well as for the plug-in hybrid models. It creates the conditions for solar and load-optimised charging (stage 1) and for cost-optimised charging based on a dynamic electricity tariff contract (stage 2, from 2024). In addition, the offer of BMW Charging and its strategic cooperation partner E.ON lays the foundations for networking with the energy market through bidirectional charging in future generations of vehicles. The all-electric models in the new BMW 5 Series are also the first BMW vehicles of the brand to be suitable for use with the Plug & Charge function. This enables the vehicle to authenticate itself automatically at compatible public charging stations without having to use an app or charging card.
A unique feature is the Multi Contract Option, which allows customers to digitally store up to five individual Plug & Charge-enabled power contracts from different providers in the vehicle.

New petrol and diesel engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

Petrol and diesel engines from the new modular generation of BMW Group Efficient Dynamics engines will be offered in a market-specific selection. They now feature 48-volt mild hybrid technology throughout and are combined with a new 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission as standard.

In Europe, the market launch will see the four-cylinder BMW 520i Sedan models (fuel consumption combined: 6.4 - 5.7 l/100 km (62 miles); CO₂ emissions: 144 - 130 g/km according to WLTP) with 153 kW/208 hp, the BMW 520d Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 5.6 - 5.1 l/100 km (62 miles); CO₂ emissions: 147 - 133 g/km according to WLTP,) and the BMW 520d xDrive Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 6.0 - 5.5 l/ 100 km (62 miles); CO₂ emissions: 157 - 143 g/km according to WLTP) with 145 kW/197 hp each. Other petrol engines with four and six cylinders are available outside Europe. The model range will be supplemented in spring 2024 by two variants with plug-in hybrid drives of the latest generation. A new in-line six-cylinder diesel engine will be available for the BMW 5 Series Sedan from 2024. Another variant of the BMW i5 with electric all-wheel drive will also follow in the course of 2024.

Unique balance between driving dynamics and travel comfort.

The BMW 5 Series Sedan's characteristic balance between maximum sportiness and high-level long-distance comfort is enhanced once again in the new edition. The longest wheelbase in the upper mid-range vehicle segment, increased track widths at the front and rear axles, an almost perfectly balanced 50 : 50 ratio axle load distribution, intelligent lightweight construction and increased body and chassis connection rigidity contribute to this.

The extensively advanced chassis technology, like the control systems, has been model-specifically adapted to the weight balance associated with the respective drive technology. It includes directly controlled wheel slip limitation, integrated braking system and sport steering with variable steering ratio as standard. An M sport suspension, an M sport brake system and the Adaptive Suspension Professional (standard in the BMW i5 M60 xDrive) with electronically controlled shock absorbers, Integral Active Steering and new vertical dynamics management are available as options. The optional Adaptive M Suspension Professional also includes Active Roll Stabilisation with Active Roll Comfort. Light alloy wheels in 18-inch or 19-inch sizes (BMW i5 and plug-in hybrid models) are standard equipment. Light-alloy wheels up to a size of 21 inches and performance tyres are offered as options.

Intense partially automated driving experience: New Highway Assistant, unique Active Lane Change Assistant.

A significantly expanded range of systems for partially automated driving and parking is available as standard or as an option for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. An innovative technology kit creates the conditions for their outstanding functionality.

The highlight of the range is the optional Driving Assistant Professional including Steering and Lane Control Assist and Distance Control with Stop & Go function. In the automotive markets in the US and Canada, as well as in Germany, it includes the Highway Assistant, which relieves the driver of steering tasks on highways with structurally separated directional lanes. At driving speeds of up to 130 km/h (85 mph), it is possible to take your hands off the steering wheel and position them comfortably as long as you keep a close eye on the traffic. As a world first, the system in the new BMW 5 Series now also includes the Active Lane Change Assistant with eye confirmation. This comfort feature now achieves a new level of interaction between the driver and the vehicle. The vehicle suggests a lane change and this can be carried out for the first time by looking in the exterior mirror to confirm the lane change. The Active Lane Change Assistant takes over the necessary steering movements automatically, the traffic situation permitting.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan is equipped with Parking Assistant, including Reversing Assist, as standard. With the optional Parking Assistant Professional, automated parking and manoeuvring of up to 200 metres can be controlled in the vehicle or by smartphone outside the vehicle.

Intuitive operation and new digital experiences: BMW iDrive with "QuickSelect" and BMW Operating System 8.5.

The enhanced BMW Curved Display and control system with "QuickSelect" also contributes to the characteristic driving and travelling experience in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. It is based on the BMW Operating System 8.5 and features a redesigned home screen with vertically arranged function icons on the driver's side. "QuickSelect” enables functions to be accessed directly without having to switch to a submenu. This means that the system has received an improved menu structure, oriented towards devices from the consumer electronics sector.

The new BMW iDrive is also combined with the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. It is consistently designed to be operated by means of a touch display and natural language. In addition, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan also features steering wheel buttons and the BMW iDrive Controller on the centre console. The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional includes the BMW Head-Up Display and Augmented View on the Control Display or instrument cluster. The BMW Natural Interaction option is also available for controlling functions using gestures.

In-car gaming premieres in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan.

In addition, BMW Operating System 8.5 offers a wider range of digital content for information and entertainment, faster update cycles for functions, improved information on charging points for electric vehicles and optimised access to many specific online services. For video streaming on the Control Display, there is a choice of YouTube and the Bundesliga In-Car app in cooperation with Xperi, as well as numerous aggregated contents on the TiVo platform.

In addition, the new BMW iDrive enables the use of an innovative form of in-car gaming with the AirConsole platform, presented for the first time in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. Drivers and passengers can play so-called casual games while the vehicle is stationary, for example to bridge waiting times while charging the high-voltage battery of the BMW i5.

Optimised networking with up to four 5G mobile radio antennas.

Other innovations include the Welcome Scenario with light show and personal welcome, which optionally also includes the dynamic light carpet. The BMW Digital Key Plus is now available for suitable smartphones with the iOS or Android operating systems as well as for the Apple Watch. With two 5G mobile phone antennas as standard and four as an option, the new business sedan provides optimised connectivity and phone quality. The Personal eSIM fully integrates the vehicle into the customer's digital ecosystem. In selected countries, the BMW ID enables automatic payment of parking fees from the vehicle.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan offers a choice of up to six My Modes to deliver an all-immersive vehicle experience. The standard equipment also includes optimised smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. With the Remote Software Upgrades function, the vehicle always stays up to date with the latest software. With BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades, customers can also test selected functions free of charge for a period of one month and then book them for a specific term.

The market launch of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan marks the beginning of a new chapter in the field of customer service. With Proactive Care, BMW is creating a new platform for exchanges with customers when different types of car servicing is required. The focus is on recognising the vehicle's service needs also by using artificial intelligence and proactively offering solutions to the customer.

Munich. The first-ever BMW 5 Series with a fully electric drive system has yet to make its global debut, but it has already come through the ultimate endurance test. The new BMW i5 repeatedly demonstrated both the stability of its electric powertrain and its dynamic performance qualities over the course of arduous test drives in wintry conditions. The programme of testing on ice and snow lasted about a year in all, from the initial test runs to the final stages of fine-tuning. During the extensive testing on country roads, motorways and specially prepared test tracks, the development engineers mainly focused their attention on the car’s ability to drive at low temperatures and on surfaces offering little grip.

The innovative powertrain and chassis control systems on board the new BMW i5 do a great deal to optimise its traction, dynamism and driving stability, and nowhere is this more apparent than on a solid blanket of snow, icy mountain roads or frozen lakes. It was only right that the dynamic winter testing of the purely electrically powered sedan recently finished exactly where it began: in the biting cold of the BMW Group’s winter test centre at Arjeplog, northern Sweden.

Endurance test for BMW eDrive technology, operating continuously at extreme sub-zero temperatures.

As part of the production development process, the new BMW i5 first had to prove its mettle back in February 2022, when it completed a road trip from Munich to the BMW test centre at Arjeplog. A prototype model of the all-electric BMW 5 Series fully camouflaged with a special wrap, plastic attachments, grilles and provisional headlights and rear lights set off on a five-day test drive from the foothills of the Bavarian Alps up to Denmark, then on to the edge of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland.

The journey of around 3,000 kilometres (1,850 miles) provided an early opportunity for the motors, power electronics, high-voltage battery and integrated heating and cooling system for the cabin and battery pack to demonstrate their advanced level of readiness on a long-distance journey. Featuring cutting-edge battery cell technology and intelligently controlled thermal management, the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology – further upgraded for the new BMW i5 – forms the basis for long ranges and short charging times during breaks in the journey, even in extreme sub-zero ambient temperatures.

The final destination of Arjeplog provided the team of development and test engineers with the ideal venue for their test programme. The snow-covered roads and frozen lakes of northern Sweden, with their vast expanses of ice, create the perfect setting for exploring how the chassis components, steering and braking systems, and driving dynamic and driving stability systems all interact with one another in extreme outdoor conditions. As a result, the groundwork for the authoritative, assured and characteristically sporty handling of the new BMW i5 were already laid in the first test drives in Arjeplog.

Testing in everyday driving and on wintry roads in the foothills of the Alps.

This was followed by more testing over the course of 2022, both at other
BMW Group test facilities and in everyday driving in and around Munich as well as in the vicinity of BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. The task here was to continue refining the car’s chassis technology and acoustic properties under a wide variety of conditions, as well as honing the drive unit’s power delivery, in order to produce a well-resolved driving experience at all times.

Here again, part of the development work was deliberately carried out during the colder months on icy and snowy roads in the Alpine foothills. This last winter, BMW i5 prototypes – now sporting less camouflage and near-production headlights – were regularly sent out for testing to verify the functionality and reliability of their powertrain and chassis control systems in extremely demanding road and weather conditions. The BMW engineers involved in the vehicle project were able to directly inspect the current state of development through testing in the BMW brand’s native Bavaria before it was time to return to endurance testing near the Arctic Circle in February 2023.

BMW i5 thrills with its unrivalled handling on ice and snow.

The purpose of this second round of testing in Sweden was to fine-tune all powertrain and chassis control systems. Thanks to their low-grip surfaces, the test areas sited on frozen lakes around Arjeplog were particularly well suited for delicately adjusting the drive torque control system in the BMW i5 under precisely reproducible conditions. In the new BMW i5, the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system, the near-actuator wheel slip limitation function and the drive torque control system are interlinked so that they can interact and complement each other flexibly in any driving situation. As a result, the all-electric sedan performs at least as proficiently as any conventionally powered model on ice and snow.

The integrated application of all powertrain and chassis systems underpins the outstanding handling abilities displayed by the BMW i5 in winter testing. The more challenging the conditions, the more impressive were the speed and precision of the control systems in the fully electric version of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. The BMW i5 serves up a harmonious blend of optimum traction when pulling away and supreme driving stability when cornering or braking, which is unique in the competitive environment.

Munich. Pioneering energy efficiency, impressive economy and hallmark driving pleasure are combined in the new entry-level plug-in hybrid models of the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 5 Series. Both model series will be supplemented by two further models each with electrified drive from March 2021. The new model variants of the BMW 3 Series Sedan and BMW 3 Series Touring as well as the BMW 5 Series Sedan and BMW 5 Series Touring feature the fourth generation of BMW eDrive technology.

In this way the BMW Group is consistently continuing its model offensive in the field of vehicles with electrified drive systems. It is already quite clear that electromobility is increasingly becoming a key driver of sustainable growth for the company. For the financial year 2021, the BMW Group is aiming to increase sales of vehicles with electrified drive systems by around 50 per cent compared to the already very successful year 2020.

The new plug-in hybrid models of the BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series offer ideal prerequisites for inspiring additional target groups for electric mobility. In the BMW 3 Series alone, there will already be four plug-in hybrid models to choose from in future, three of which will also be optionally available with BMW xDrive. The BMW 5 Series will then comprise as many as five models that combine characteristic sportiness, everyday and travelling suitability with the option of locally emission-free driving. Three of them feature intelligent all-wheel drive as standard or as an option.

In total, the BMW Group will be offering 15 BMW models and one MINI model with plug-in hybrid drive from March 2021. The current expansion of the range represents the next logical step on the way to a model range that will already include 25 electrified vehicles by 2023.

Economic entry into the world of electrified driving pleasure.

The new additions to the range of plug-in hybrid models create the opportunity to combine the comprehensive qualities of the new BMW 3 Series and the new BMW 5 Series with the advanced character of an electrified drive in a particularly economical fashion. The model-specific plug-in hybrid system of the new entry-level variants consists of a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine with 120 kW/163 hp and an electric motor. Together they generate a system output of up to 150 kW/204 hp.

The intelligently controlled interaction of the combustion engine and electric motor delivers brand-typical hybrid-specific driving pleasure as well as outstanding efficiency. The two engines transmit their drive torque to the rear wheels via the 8-speed Steptronic transmission or, to all four wheels as required with the help of the xDrive system. In addition to 150 kW/204 hp of system output, the spontaneous power delivery of the plug-in hybrid drive and the maximum system torque of 350 Nm ensure high-level sprint capacity and sporty driving characteristics.

The new BMW 320e Sedan accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 225 km/h. The corresponding figures for the new BMW 320e Touring are 7.9 seconds and 220 km/h, while for the new BMW 320e xDrive Touring they are 8.2 seconds and 219 km/h. The new BMW 520e Sedan accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, and its top speed is 225 km/h. The new BMW 520e Touring completes the standard sprint in 8.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 218 km/h. In purely electric driving mode, the new plug-in hybrid models of both series can reach a top speed of 140 km/h.

High electric ranges thanks to state-of-the-art battery cell technology.

Due to the exemplary efficiency of their electric motor and the high storage capacity of their high-voltage battery, the new plug-in hybrid models are ideal for handling a large part of everyday driving, such as commuting between home and work, with pure e-drive and thus locally emission-free. Developed on the basis of most recent battery cell technology and manufactured by the BMW Group, the lithium-ion batteries offer a gross energy content of 12.0 kWh and a capacity of 34 Ah.

The values for the electric range according to the WLTP test cycle are 52 to 61 kilometres for the new BMW 320e Sedan, 50 to 59 kilometres for the new BMW 320e Touring, 46 to 57 kilometres for the new BMW 320e xDrive Touring, 53 to 61 kilometres for the new BMW 520e Sedan and 52 to 57 kilometres for the new BMW 520e Touring.

On the road, the high-voltage battery is particularly efficient thanks to brake energy recovery. Comprehensive charging equipment will be received by the customer in the scope of delivery of the vehicle: for charging at home and on the go, the charging cables are already included as well as the BMW Charging Card, which can be easily activated. BMW customers enjoy special conditions here, which also exempt from the monthly basic fee in the first year. Other products and services, such as wall boxes including professional installation, can also be selected from BMW Charging's wide range of products as required. The high-voltage battery can be charged with a maximum of 3,7kW from 0 to 80 per cent of its total capacity in 2.6 hours and from zero to 100 per cent in 3.6 hours.

Due to their long ranges and low CO2 emissions, the new plug-in BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series hybrid models meet the criteria which have been stipulated for the classification as an electric vehicle in Germany and the associated special rights on public roads. As a result, they are also subject to a 50% reduced company car taxation. In addition, the new models also meet the requirements for Euro 6.750 combined incentives in Germany for the BMW 320e versions and Euro 5.625 for the BMW 520e versions.

Digital services support locally emission-free driving.

BMW Live Cockpit Plus including Connected Package Professional, which is standard equipment in the new plug-in hybrid models, enables drivers to use numerous digital services, some of which are specially designed for electric mobility. With the BMW eDrive Zone and BMW Points digital services, drivers of plug-in hybrid BMW models are given additional incentives and opportunities to make particularly intensive use of the potential of locally emission-free mobility and thus contribute reducing CO2 and noise emissions in inner-city areas.

As soon as the vehicle enters an inner-city core area recognised as an eDrive Zone by means of geo-fencing via GPS, the control system of the plug-in hybrid drive automatically activates the purely electric driving mode. In addition to the official urban environmental zones in Germany, the eDrive Zones also include city areas in numerous other European countries. In total, the BMW eDrive Zone service can already be used in more than 80 European cities.

The increase in the distance covered electrically not only helps optimise efficiency and reduce emissions, it also reduces operating costs for the customer. This applies particularly to city traffic, where electric power consistently achieves a higher level of efficiency than a petrol or diesel engine.

Locally emission-free driving is also rewarded with BMW Points, the world's first rewards programme for drivers of BMW plug-in hybrid models. For each purely electric kilometre travelled, the driver is credited with one point. Within areas defined as a BMW eDrive Zone, using purely electric driving mode is even rewarded with double points. The points collected can then be converted into credit that can be redeemed when charging the high-voltage battery at public BMW Charging Stations. The BMW eDrive Zones and BMW Points services are also standard for the new new BMW 3 Series and the new BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid models.

Unrestricted everyday and travelling suitability, extensive level of standard equipment.

The high-voltage battery of all nwe BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid models is installed below the rear seat bench to save space. This means that the luggage compartment volume of the Sedan and Touring models is almost fully available. It is 375 litres in the new BMW 320e Sedan and 410 litres in the new BMW 520e Sedan. In the new BMW 320e Touring, storage space can be increased from 410 to 1 420 litres and from 430 to 1 560 litres in the new BMW 520e Touring. The maximum permissible trailer load is 1 500 kilograms for the BMW 3 Series models and 1 700 kilograms for the BMW 5 Series models.

The generous amount of space contributes to the attractive versatility of the plug-in hybrid models, as does the drive concept with two engines. Thanks to a fuel tank that holds 40 litres in the BMW 3 Series models and 46 litres in the BMW 5 Series models, a high range is ensured, emphasising the electric vehicles’ travelling suitability.

The BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid models are also equipped with active pedestrian protection as standard. When driving electrically at speeds of up to 30 km/h, an unmistakeable sound designed specifically for electrified BMW models is generated to alert other road users to the approaching car without impairing the acoustic comfort of the vehicle occupants.

The sporty characteristics of the new plug-in hybrid models are enhanced by model-specific tuning and targeted transmission of the drive sound via the audio system into the interior, a direct yet precise accelerator pedal characteristic and a specific 8-speed Steptronic transmission shift programme including brake downshifts.

Standard equipment also includes automatic air conditioning with extended features (BMW 520e Sedan, BMW 520e Touring) or automatic air conditioning (BMW 320e Sedan, BMW 320e Touring) and auxiliary heating and air conditioning. The interior of the vehicle can preheated or precooled as required. This ensures pleasant temperatures before starting off even if the battery has a low state of charge. The interior can be pre-conditioned remotely via the My BMW App using a smartphone.

Munich. Increased efficiency through consistent electrification, optimised emissions and innovations in the areas of driver assistance and digital services are the focus of the model revision measures for numerous BMW model series that will take effect in autumn 2020. From November 2020, all models of the premium brand will meet the requirements of the currently strictest exhaust emission standard Euro 6d. In the BMW 5 Series, the range of plug-in hybrid models has been extended by three new variants. New inline 6-cylinder diesel engines and 48-volt mild hybrid technology lower fuel consumption and emissions of selected models in the BMW 3 Series and BMW 8 Series. In addition, further engines will supplement the drive portfolio of the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé.

Active speed control with Stop&Go provides an added comfort and safety thanks to the new additional feature of traffic light recognition, which will be part of the Driving Assistant Professional option in numerous current models from November 2020.

The latest digital services for models equipped with BMW Operating System 7 increase driving pleasure even further. BMW News provides the driver with personalised audio news. New options when creating the driver profile make it easier to personalise the vehicle. The range of functions of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will also be expanded further. New body finishes and optional extras will be available for numerous models from November 2020.

Efficiency becomes more diverse: World premiere for five plug-in hybrid models in the BMW 5 Series.

The range of BMW models with electrified drive systems will also be consistently expanded in autumn 2020. The expanded range of the following electrified models is especially attractive: BMW 545e xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 2.3 – 2.2 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.3 – 15.8 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 53 – 49 g/km; electric range: 47 – 57 km), BMW 530e Touring (combined fuel consumption: 2.0 – 1.8 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.1 – 15.4 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 46 – 42 g/km; electric range: 52 – 57 km (WLTP)) and BMW 530e xDrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 2.4 – 2.2 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.7 – 16.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 54 – 50 g/km; electric range: 48 – 53 km (WLTP)). The BMW 5 Series model range now already includes five plug-in hybrid variants. In the upper mid-size class, BMW offers the largest selection of models with electrified drive.

In the new BMW 545e xDrive Sedan, an inline 6-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission deliver impressive driving dynamics in a particularly efficient manner. The power of the two drive units adds up to a maximum system output of 290 kW/394 hp and is distributed between the front and rear wheels as required by the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive. The brand’s hallmark combination of energy efficiency and sportiness also characterises the new Touring models, whose plug-in hybrid system consists of a 4-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive system also integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission. Together they generate a system output of up to 215 kW/292 hp in the XtraBoost mode when load requirements are particularly high.

Increased dynamic performance and reduced fuel consumption: New inline 6-cylinder diesel engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology in the BMW 3 Series and BMW 8 Series.

With the introduction of 48-volt mild hybrid technology in additional models, BMW continues to consistently reduce fuel consumption and emissions in its current vehicle fleet. This is linked to the introduction of a new generation of inline 6-cylinder diesel engines. As of autumn 2020, four mid-size models of the BMW 3 Series and three luxury sports cars of the BMW 8 Series will offer noticeably more dynamic performance and increased efficiency.

This twofold and BMW typical progress is achieved through further advanced BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and additionally with the aid of a particularly powerful starter generator and an additional battery. The dynamic power delivery when starting off and accelerating is enhanced by the additional power of 8 kW/11 hp spontaneously provided by the 48-volt starter generator. In other load ranges the electric drive can relieve the combustion engine and thus increase its efficiency. The power required for this is generated by intensive recuperation in braking and thrust phases and stored in a 48-volt battery, which also supplies the vehicle’s electrical system.

The 48-volt mild hybrid technology will be used in four further BMW 3 Series models from November 2020. In the new BMW 330d Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 4.7 – 4.4 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 125 – 116 g/km*) and the new BMW 330d Xdrive Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 5.0 – 4.7 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 132 – 123 g/km*) and the new BMW 330d Touring (combined fuel consumption: 4.8 – 4.5 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 128 – 119 g/km*) and the new BMW 330d Xdrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 5.2 – 4.8 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 136 – 127 g/km), it supports the new inline 6-cylinder diesel engine, which already provides additional driving pleasure with its maximum output increased by 15 kW/21 hp to 210 kW/286 hp. Thanks to a two-stage turbocharging system and an advanced common rail injection system whose piezo injectors now inject the fuel with up to ten injections per working cycle and a maximum pressure of 2 700 bar into the combustion chambers, engine response and efficiency of the 3.0 litre engine are optimised. The new diesel engine generates its maximum torque, which has been increased by 30 to 650 Nm, between 1 500 and 2 500 rpm. The increased power of the combustion engine and the additional electrical power noticeably improve the car’s sprint capacity. For example, the new BMW 330d Sedan improves its acceleration from zero to 100 km/h by 0.2 seconds to now 5.3 seconds.

In the BMW 8 Series, 48-volt mild hybrid technology is combined with an equally new and even more powerful 3.0-litre diesel engine. The BMW 840d xDrive Coupé models (fuel consumption combined: 5.8 – 5.6 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 154 - 146 g/km), BMW 840d xDrive Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 6.0 – 5.7 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 159 – 151 g/km) and BMW 840d xDrive Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 5.9 – 5.6 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 155 - 148 g/km) will be powered by a 250 kW/340 hp inline 6-cylinder engine in the future. The 15 kW/20 hp increase in top-level output also results from further advanced BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. It now includes a multi-stage turbocharger with variable turbine geometry for the high-pressure and low-pressure stages. The maximum torque of 700 Nm is generated alreadybetween 1 750 and 2 250 rpm. In the luxury sports car model range, the new drive technology enables the BMW 840d xDrive Coupé, for example, to improve its acceleration figure from a standing start to 100 km/h by 0.1 seconds to 4.8 seconds. The optimised performance characteristics of the diesel engine are accompanied by precisely adapted fine tuning of the chassis and its control systems.

The new diesel engines for the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 8 Series also represent the latest state of the art with regard to emissions. They feature exhaust gas treatment technology, whose engine-proximate components consist of a diesel oxidation catalytic converter and an SCR coating on the diesel particulate filter. In order to optimally reduce nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions, a second metering unit is additionally integrated at the outlet of the engine-proximate SCR system.

BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé: Additional engines and new optional extras.

New engines will be available from November 2020 for the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé. The new BMW 116i (combined fuel consumption: 5.8 – 5.4 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 133 – 124 g/km) is powered by a 3-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 80 kW/109 hp and a maximum torque of 190 Nm. It is equipped as standard with a manual 6-speed transmission and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 10.6 seconds. A 7-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch is optionally available. In addition, the model range will be expanded to include the new BMW 120i (fuel consumption combined: 5.8 – 5.5 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 134 – 126 g/km). Its 4-cylinder petrol engine generates a maximum output of 131 kW/178 hp and a maximum torque of 280 Nm and is combined as standard with a 7-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch. The new BMW 120i accelerates from a standing start to 100 km/h in 7.0 seconds.

Outstanding economy is the hallmark of the new entry-level diesel engine for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé. The 3-cylinder diesel engine of the new BMW 216d Gran Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 4.1 – 3.8 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 108 – 99 g/km) provides a maximum output of 85 kW/116 hp and a maximum torque of 270 Nm. It transmits its power to a 7-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch as standard and enables acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds.

The range of optional equipment for the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé is supplemented by the BMW Individual Shadow Line lights. With the black inserts at the upper edge of the headlamps they make the front view even more powerfully expressive.

Active speed control with Stop&Go: new with traffic light recognition: Increased comfort and optimised safety in urban traffic.

The comfort and safety gains that can be achieved by combined speed and distance control can be experienced from autumn 2020 in numerous current BMW models, including when driving in urban traffic. In combination with the optional Driving Assistant Professional and the optional BMW Head-Up Display, the BMW 3 Series, BMW 4 Series and BMW 5 Series Series, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo, the BMW 7 Series and 8 Series as well as the BMW iX3, BMW X5, BMW X6, BMW X7, BMW M3, BMW M4, BMW M5, BMW M8, BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M in Germany the function of active speed control with Stop&Go now also a traffic light recognition available. In addition to vehicles and traffic signs in front, the signals of light signals registered by the front camera are also taken into account.

In the case of simple traffic light systems, these are automatically transferred to the speed and distance control. If the traffic light shows a red light, the system delays the vehicle to a standstill, a green light signal leads to the continuation of the journey. In a more complex intersection situation, the driver is offered the traffic lights for manual transfer in the instrument combination.

The driver can now confirm the light signal shown and thus continue to use the automatic speed and distance control or take control of the speed himself. The start-up reminder provides additional comfort in city traffic. During a stop at simple traffic lights, the current traffic light phase is displayed in the instrument combo, and at the beginning of the green phase, the driver also receives a signal to restart.

The function of traffic light recognition can also be retrofitted into the vehicle via remote software upgrade. With the exception of the BMW 8 Series models, this option is available for vehicles of all mentioned series, which were produced from July 2020 and are equipped with the Driving Assistant Professional and Head Up Display. Vehicles of the BMW X5, BMW X6, BMW X7 series include this option from August 2020 production.

New digital services for more driving pleasure: BMW News, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with new functions, personal profile picture and simple log-in.

The latest generation of the display and control system makes it possible to use new digital services in numerous current BMW models. The BMW Operating System 7, which is available in conjunction with BMW Live Cockpit, BMW Live Cockpit Plus or BMW Live Cockpit Professional, allows the driver to customise what is displayed to a very high degree. From November 2020, audio content will also be tailored to the driver’s wishes and needs with BMW News. Based on the driver’s individual interests, current online news is selected from publisher offerings and broadcast in the form of naturally spoken language via the vehicle's audio system.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is one of the particularly innovative services that features in current models with BMW Operating System 7. The digital companion, which enables intuitive operation of numerous vehicle functions via voice control (“Hey, BMW”), is constantly gaining new capabilities. From autumn 2020, the operating modes MAX eDrive and AUTO eDrive or ELECTRIC and HYBRID can also be activated in the appropriately equipped plug-in hybrid models by means of a naturally spoken instruction. In addition, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will be able to play back the drive sounds of other BMW models via the audio system when asked a corresponding question such as ("What does a BMW M3 sound like?") in cars delivered to the German market.

Optimised options for creating a driver profile allow further customisation opportunities. From November 2020, the driver can no longer only login by entering the BMW ID manually, but also via the My BMW App as well, making the process very convenient. A QR code generated for this purpose can be displayed on the Control Display, which can be scanned using a smartphone. The personal driver profile data can then be transferred to the vehicle. Also new: The driver can add a photo of his choice to his individual profile.

BMW X1 and BMW X2: New headlamp variants and BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line with extended features.

Adaptive LED headlights will be available for the compact BMW X2 Sports Activity Coupé from November 2020. They optimise visibility when driving at night, among other things by means of a high beam matrix function. This feature is able to increase the range of vision while at the same time avoiding any dazzle effect on other road users. To achieve this, the high beam is divided into several LED segments that can be activated and deactivated independently of each other to adapt how the road is illuminated to the respective traffic situation.

In addition, the striking BMW Individual Shadow Line lights are available as a new option for the BMW X2 and the BMW X1. The sporty appearance of the BMW X2 can be further enhanced by the BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line with extended features. In addition to the high-gloss black side window surrounds, this option includes a black frame for the BMW kidney grille and tailpipe trims in chrome black.

New paint finishes allow for expressive individualisation.

New additions to the range of paint finishes for numerous models will be introduced in autumn 2020 allowing for even greater levels of individualisation. The new San Remo Green metallic paint finish will also be available for the new BMW 4 Series Coupé in future. For the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7, the colours Dravit Grey metallic and Sparkling Brown metallic have been added to the range. In addition, the BMW Individual special paintwork finishes Grigio Telesto metallic, Urban Green metallic, Frozen Black metallic, Petrol Mica metallic, Ruby Red metallic, Avus Blue metallic and British Racing Green metallic are also available for the large BMW X models. 

For the BMW i3 (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) and BMW i3s (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 14.6 – 14.0 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) new paint finishes will also be available from November 2020. The purely electrically driven models will be available with paint finishes in Cashmere Silver with accents in BMW i Blue and Galvanic Gold with accents in Frozen Grey metallic and Fluid Black with accents in Frozen Grey metallic.

Munich. With a ten-year plan for sustainability, the BMW Group is underscoring its commitment to the goals of the Paris climate agreement, the main focus being on the expansion of electric mobility. More than 500,000 electrified vehicles were sold by the end of 2019 and this figure will most likely rise to over 1 million by the end of 2021. The BMW 5 Series makes a substantial contribution towards achieving both past and future goals. With almost 50,000 units, BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid models were the most successful electrified models in the
BMW Group’s portfolio worldwide in 2019.

Extension of the BMW 5 Series to include five plug-in hybrid models.

With an increase from two to five models featuring innovative plug-in hybrid drive by November 2020, the new BMW 5 Series offers the largest range of PHEVs within one BMW Group model series.

The latest generation of BMW eDrive technology in conjunction with a four-cylinder petrol engine powers the BMW 530e plug-in hybrid models. July 2020 saw the launch of the new BMW 530e Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 1.9 – 1.7 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 14.9 – 13.8 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 43 – 39 g/km) and the new BMW 530e xDrive Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 2.1 – 2.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.5 – 15.9 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 49 – 46 g/km).

In November 2020, the new BMW 530e Touring (combined fuel consumption: 2.0 – 1.8 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.1 – 15.4 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 46 – 42 g/km) and the new BMW 530e xDrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 2.4 – 2.2 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.7 – 16.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 54 – 50 g/km) will be launched.

Top of the range model: The new BMW 545e xDrive Sedan.

The new BMW 545e xDrive Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 2.3 – 2.2 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.3 – 15.8 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 53 – 49 g/km) features a synchronous electric motor delivering a maximum power output of 80 kW/109 hp, which is combined with an efficient straight six-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and 210 kW/286 hp, together generating an overall system output of 290 kW/394 hp. Power is distributed as required to all four wheels via an 8-speed Steptronic transmission and intelligent BMW xDrive four-wheel drive. Maximum system torque is 600 Nm and top speed is reached at 250 km/h, whilst a speed of 140 km/h is possible in purely electric operation. From a standstill, the new BMW 545e xDrive accelerates to a speed of 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. Thus, the BMW 545e xDrive clearly excels as the most dynamic of all BMW six-cylinder plug-in hybrids.

Thanks to intelligently controlled interaction between both drive systems, the new BMW 545e xDrive combines the best of two worlds. It facilitates not only purely electric driving in urban traffic and efficient commuting between home and the workplace, but also excels through dynamic performance and comfortable long-distance travel. With a purely electric range of 49 – 57 kilometres* and an average fuel consumption of 2.3 – 2.2 litres/100 km, the new BMW 545e xDrive combines brand-typical driving dynamics and a high level of long-distance ride comfort with extremely efficient use of resources.

The latest plug-in hybrid model of the BMW 5 Series is fitted with a 400V lithium-ion battery which is positioned under the rear seat in order to save space. With a luggage volume of 410 litres, the transport capacity of the BMW 545e xDrive is only slightly smaller than of those model variants which are fitted with a conventional engine.

Different driving modes for maximum efficiency in accordance with the relevant driving style and situation.
In order to make optimum use of the combination of the straight six-cylinder engine featuring ultra-smooth running characteristics and eDrive technology in all driving situations, the BMW 545e xDrive supports the driver in numerous ways in terms of energy management. Various driving modes, some of which can be individualised in their operation, are simply selected by pressing the corresponding button on the centre console.

The HYBRID mode is the default setting, which ensures a balanced set-up and an intelligent interaction between combustion engine and electric motor. It is also possible to select ELECTRIC mode as the standard setting via the iDrive menu. In HYBRID mode, the electric motor is predominantly used. The combustion engine only kicks in at higher speeds or under intensive load conditions. Since the system is linked to the navigation system, the interaction between combustion engine and electric motor can be adapted more precisely to the route profile, topography and other driving situations in an anticipatory manner. The electric range is increased by recuperation in overrun and braking phases. The energy supply saved in this way can then be used specifically for locally emission-free driving through urban areas and the arrival at the defined destination.

By pressing the HYBRID button twice, an efficiency-optimised version of this operating mode (HYBRID ECO PRO) is activated.
The coasting function on the overrun, among other things, contributes to a further reduction in consumption. The navigation and sensor data-supported control system also optimises the effectiveness of braking energy recovery. When approaching a junction or a vehicle driving ahead, for example, infinitely adaptive recuperation can be put to particularly intensive use for the purpose of deceleration.

In SPORT mode, the electric motor supports the straight six-cylinder petrol engine when the overall system output of 290 kW/394 hp is fully needed. The set-up is designed for dynamic performance, and the gearshift program is sporty.

The ELECTRIC mode, on the other hand, enables locally purely emission-free driving up to 57 kilometres* and up to 140 km/h.

Special sounds for a special driving experience.
The new “ready to drive sound” produced by the BMW 545e xDrive is the result of the collaboration with composer Hans Zimmer and is designed to trigger joyful anticipation of the electric drive when the driver enters the vehicle and presses the Start/Stop button.

A distinctive sound created especially for electrified BMW models is used for the purpose of acoustic pedestrian protection, emitted via a speaker system. The sound design in the low speed range of up to 30 km/h radiates a vibrant acoustic presence, though without impairing the acoustic comfort of vehicle occupants.

Likewise, via the vehicle audio system, “Active Sound Design” provides for an authentic and, in the SPORT mode of the Driving Experience Control Switch, for a particularly intense and pronounced sound.

Electric mobility meets digitalisation: Digital services for the plug-in hybrid models of the BMW 5 Series.

The BMW Group also offers innovative digital services that actively contribute towards increasing the attractiveness of electric driving even further.  

The BMW eDrive Zone service facilitates the automatic switching over of the drive system to purely electric mode when entering an urban low-emission zone and similar inner-city areas. In addition, local emission-free driving with a
BMW plug-in hybrid model is rewarded through the globally unique loyalty programme BMW Points.

Apart from filling stations, the navigation system also displays public charging points. When selecting a charging station, the driver is also provided with a forecast on its occupation status as well as recommendations for nearby restaurants or cafés. Moreover, BMW enables BMW Charging customers to reserve an enabled charging station for a limited period of time.

Furthermore, other products from BMW Charging also offer the possibility of comfortable charging at home and when out and about. These also comprise various versions of the Wallbox, including installation service, individual offers for the purchase of electricity and access to the world’s largest network of public charging stations comprising more than 155,000 charging points in Europe alone.  

Preconditioning of the interior by means of auxiliary heating and air conditioning ensures optimised comfort during any season. If the preconditioning system is activated during the charging process after defining a specific departure time, the system also guarantees the full electric range in drive mode. The system is controlled either from inside the vehicle or conveniently via the My BMW app.

Concurrently with the market launch of the new BMW 5 Series, the BMW M5 (combined fuel consumption: 10.6 – 10.5 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 242 – 239 g/km*) and the BMW M5 Competition (combined fuel consumption: 10.6 – 10.5 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 242 – 239 g/km*), BMW is also offering in July 2020 an extensive range of BMW M Performance Parts for the new models. The accessories, which were developed using the comprehensive know-how of the BMW M GmbH, set additional sporty accents in terms of design, driving dynamics and performance and sharpen the particularly sporty character of both the BMW M5 and the BMW M5 Competition high-performance sedans even further. All components are aligned in the best tradition to the specific character of each model and, in addition to the sporty look, also fulfil the functional requirements as regards lightweight construction and aerodynamics.  Most of the M Performance Parts for the BMW 5 Series will be available directly after the market launch of the new models.

High quality exterior carbon parts.
Numerous BMW M Performance Parts made from high-quality carbon render BMW’s motorsport DNA permanently visible on the BMW 5 Series even off the racetrack. The M Performance front attachment on both sides and the M Performance front splitter made from the high-grade material provide for a sporty look at the front.  In addition to a variant of the kidney grille surround in high-gloss black, the M Performance front grille is also available in a carbon version. Likewise, the M Performance exterior mirror caps, M Performance Air Breather in the front fenders and M Performance side sill attachments are made from this high-quality material. The M Performance rear spoiler Carbon and the M Performance rear spoiler Pro Carbon are both available for the sedans, with the M Performance carbon rear diffusor providing for a sporty looking rear end.

M Performance steering wheel and carbon parts for the interior.
The M Performance steering wheel creates a particularly intense bond between driver and vehicle. With distinctively shaped Alcantara grip recesses, large thumb-rests and special lining it guarantees maximum grip and a direct steering feel at all times. Together with the Alcantara, silver-grey, hand-sewn cross-stitching and the red 12 o’clock marking provide for a genuine motor sports atmosphere. As an alternative to the standard leather-covered steering wheel trim, M Performance carbon/leather or carbon/Alcantara steering wheel trims are also optionally available. M Performance sports suspension for M5 models.
The outstanding driving dynamics of the BMW M5 and the BMW M5 Competition can be enhanced even further with the M Performance sports suspension without a change of the damper settings. The coilover suspension allows the vehicle to be lowered by between 5 and 20 millimetres, resulting in a lower centre of gravity, less roll tendency and higher cornering speeds. The optional M Performance sports brake system ensures corresponding deceleration values under maximum load. 20-inch M Performance forged wheels with Y-spoke design and 863 M Ferric Grey matt finish are also exclusively available for the two M5 models. These are manufactured using a sophisticated forging and milling process, offering a unique and patented three-dimensional spoke geometry, milled M Performance lettering as well as a coloured M Logo. Apertures in the spokes reduce air build-up in the wheel, so that less power is required to cut turbulence at high speeds. Further light alloy wheels comprising the M Performance 20-inch forged wheels in a multi-spoke 732 M bicoloured design are available for 5 Series vehicles. Munich. With the introduction of 48-volt mild hybrid technology in additional model series from summer 2020, BMW continues to consistently reduce fuel consumption and emissions in its current vehicle fleet. From July and August 2020, both efficiency and dynamic performance will be optimised in 51 models with the use of a particularly powerful starter generator and an additional battery. This also applies to the new in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines in the BMW 7 Series and in the BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7. Two additional engine variants are available for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé from July 2020 onwards. In numerous plug-in hybrid models, the new BMW eDrive Zone function will ensure an automatic switch to purely electric operating mode when entering inner city areas such as low emission zones.

The extension of the range of standard and optional equipment features in the areas of driver assistance systems, operation and networking contributes to an increase in driving pleasure. A new display and control system will be part of the standard trim in the new BMW 3 Series from July 2020. Among other things, BMW Operating System 7 enables use of the optional BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Furthermore, in the BMW 3 Series and other model series the range of functions of the optional Driving Assistant Professional is supplemented by Active Navigation Guidance and the Emergency Lane Assistant. With the optional smartphone integration, numerous current BMW models will enable use of Android Auto in addition to Apple CarPlay as of summer 2020.

Increased dynamic performance and reduced fuel consumption: 48-volt mild hybrid technology now in 51 BMW models.
From summer 2020 onwards, mild hybrid technology will be used in numerous additional BMW models to provide support and relief for the combustion engine. It consists of a 48-volt starter generator that enables particularly intensive braking energy recuperation along with an additional battery to store the electricity that is generated in this way. The 48-volt battery not only supplies the electrically operated vehicle functions, it also makes its energy available to generate additional drive power. For this purpose the current flows back to the starter generator, which now takes on the role of an electric drive. This reduces the load on the combustion engine, allowing it to run as often as possible in an efficiency-optimised load range. What is more, the generator creates an electric boost during acceleration. This instantly available additional output of 8 kW/11 hp supports dynamic power delivery during start and acceleration.

The 48-volt mild hybrid technology was first introduced in selected model variants of the BMW 5 Series in autumn 2019. This was followed by the BMW 3 Series models and several BMW X models. From July and August 2020, it will be available as standard in 37 further model variants of the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series and BMW 7 Series as well as the BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7. All in all it will ensure efficiency and dynamic performance in 51 current BMW models.

More power, less emissions: the new in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines with optimised BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology.
A new generation of in-line 6-cylinder engines will make its debut in numerous BMW model series in summer 2020. These highly efficient aluminium power units, each with a capacity of 3.0 litres, combine their extensively further developed BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology with the new 48-volt mild hybrid system, thereby achieving particularly significant progress within the context of BMW EfficientDynamics. In addition to optimised turbocharging systems, the latest version of common rail direct injection with piezo injectors ensures that both performance and efficiency are significantly increased in the new diesel engines. The injectors now transport fuel to the combustion chambers in up to ten injections per cycle and at a maximum pressure of 2,700 bar.

With maximum output increased by 15 kW/21 hp to 210 kW/286 hp, the new diesel engine for the models BMW 730d (combined fuel consumption: 4.9 – 4.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 128 – 123 g/km) and BMW 730d xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.2 – 5.0 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 138 – 133 g/km), BMW 730Ld (combined fuel consumption: 5.0 – 4.8 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 130 – 126 g/km), BMW 730Ld xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.3 – 5.1 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 139 – 133 g/km), BMW X3 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 5.6 – 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 147 – 137 g/km), BMW X4 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 5.6 – 5.1 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 146 – 136 g/km), BMW X5 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 – 5.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 164 – 150 g/km) und BMW X6 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 – 5.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 162 – 149 g/km) demonstrates a perceptibly enhanced temperament. Its particularly spontaneous power delivery is due to the multi-stage turbocharging used for the first time in this version of the in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine, along with variable turbine geometry for the low-pressure stage of the system. Increased by 30 to 650 Nm, the maximum torque of the new drive unit goes on stream at between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm – a power boost that especially results in enhanced sprint capacity. For example, the BMW 730d and the BMW 730d xDrive have improved their acceleration from zero to 100 km/h by 0.2 seconds each to 5.9 and 5.6 seconds respectively.

The new diesel engine now also used in the BMW 740d xDrive models BMW 740d xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.4 – 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 142 – 136 g/km), BMW 740Ld xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.4 – 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 143 – 137 g/km), BMW X3 M40d (combined fuel consumption: 6.0 – 5.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 157 – 148 g/km), BMW X4 M40d (combined fuel consumption: 5.9 – 5.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 156 – 147 g/km) und BMW X7 xDrive40d (combined fuel consumption: 6.6 – 6.4 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 173 – 167 g/km) generates even greater pulling power. Its multi-stage turbocharging system comprises a high-pressure and a low-pressure turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. As a result, a maximum torque of 700 Nm is delivered between 1,750 and 2,250 rpm. The engine reaches its peak output of 250 kW/340 hp at 4 400 rpm. In the BMW 740d xDrive, for example, this increased power helps achieve a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h that is also improved by 0.2 seconds to 5.0 seconds.

The two new engines are feature exhaust gas treatment technology with engine-related components consisting of a diesel oxidation catalytic converter and an SCR coating on the diesel particulate filter. For optimum reduction of nitrogen oxide (NO_X) emissions, a second dosage unit is additionally integrated at the outlet of the engine-related SCR system. As a result, the models powered by the new in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines meet the Euro 6d emissions standard.

Expansion of the model range for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé model range will be extended from July 2020 with the addition of two new engine variants. A new entry-level diesel engine and an additional all-wheel drive model variant are available for the sporty, elegant four-door model in the premium compact segment. The new BMW 218d Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 4.5 – 4.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 118 – 109 g/km) is powered by the latest version of a 4-cylinder diesel engine. The BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology in the 2.0-litre power unit now includes a two-stage turbocharging system as well as a likewise further developed common rail direct injection featuring solenoid valve injectors. The new engine delivers its maximum torque of 350 Nm between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm, reaching a maximum output of 110 kW/150 hp at 4,000 rpm. The new BMW 218d Gran Coupé accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual transmission and in 8.5 seconds with the optional 8-speed Steptronic transmission.

The second diesel engine available for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé delivers a maximum output of 140 kW/190 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. In the new BMW 220d xDrive Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 4.9 – 4.5 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 129 – 119 g/km) it is now combined with intelligent all-wheel drive and an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. This enables the new model variant to accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. Thanks to state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment including SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue injection, both new models meet the Euro 6d emissions standard.

Green light for BMW eDrive Zone: locally emissions-free travel in the city on an automated basis.
Innovative technology from the fields of electrification and digitalisation is combined in the new BMW eDrive Zone function available in the premium car manufacturer’s plug-in hybrid models. This globally unique digital service offers additional options for making optimum use of the capabilities of emissions-free driving. The BMW eDrive Zone function triggers an automatic switch to purely electric operating mode as soon as the vehicle enters selected urban areas such as low-emission zones.

BMW eDrive Zone will be a standard feature of all plug-in hybrid models of the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series and BMW 7 Series as well as the BMW X5. The digital service uses geo-fencing technology via GPS to identify designated areas. eDrive zones of this kind are currently designated in some 80 cities throughout Europe. When the service is activated, each available eDrive Zone on the navigation map is graphically highlighted in the Control Display: a message appears to inform the driver that the vehicle will automatically switch to electric driving mode as soon as it enters an eDrive Zone.

From summer 2020, the above-mentioned plug-in hybrid models will also be fitted with an integrated drive-ready sound for electric power as standard. This means that both starting and stopping the electric drive will be accompanied by a distinctive acoustic signal. In addition there has been an expansion of the range of preconditioning functions, which is also a standard feature. Depending on the equipment fitted, more functions will be available that can be activated remotely by smartphone, in addition to interior cooling and heating. In future it will also be possible to activate the seat climate control before the start of a journey, for example. In the same way it will be possible to include the seat, steering wheel, exterior mirror and rear window heating systems in the preconditioning for heating the interior, as well as heating of the cameras for the driver assistance systems.

BMW 3 Series Sedan and BMW 3 Series Touring now fitted with BMW Operating System 7 as standard.
In the new BMW 3 Series, the latest generation of the display and control system will be a standard feature as of summer 2020. Previously only used in conjunction with BMW Live Cockpit Professional, BMW Operating System 7 offers extensive individualisation and personalisation of the content shown on the Control Display. The standard BMW Live Cockpit now also includes a redesigned instrument cluster with a 5.1-inch digital display at its centre. BMW Live Cockpit Plus, like BMW Live Cockpit Professional, also includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. This digital companion enables intuitive operation of numerous vehicle functions via voice control (“Hey, BMW”). In the BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, BMW Operating System 7 will also be part of the optional BMW Live Cockpit Plus from July 2020.

The M sports seats are new to the range of optional extras for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan and the new BMW 3 Series Touring. They feature excellent lateral support, a wide range of adjustment options and headrests with embossed M logo. The M sports seats for driver and front passenger are available in conjunction with the Model M Sport equipment line as well as for the BMW M automobiles of the new BMW 3 Series. The choice of exterior colours for the new BMW 3 Series is supplemented by the variant Phytonic Blue metallic.

Increased comfort and safety: Driving Assistant Professional with additional functions.
The optional Driving Assistant Professional is a particularly comprehensive collection of driver assistance systems designed to optimise comfort and safety: it is being used by BMW to pave the way to automated driving in numerous current models. The focus is on the steering and lane guidance assistant, which will be enhanced with additional functions from summer 2020 in the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series and BMW 8 Series, in the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7, and in all variants of the BMW M5 and BMW M8.

The new Active Navigation Guidance indicates lane changes that are necessary in order to continue driving along the selected route when destination guidance is active. The driver can then carry out this operation conveniently with the aid of the lane change assistant. Emergency Lane Assistant is another new function: this automatically guides the vehicle to the ideal edge of its lane in congested situations on motorways. In addition, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function will in future include an adaptive distance control that adapts to the respective traffic situation and environmental conditions.

Further progress is also being made in the intelligent control of the Speed Limit Info system with No Passing Indicator. In all model variants of the BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series, BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, the BMW Z4, the BMW X5, the BMW X6 and the BMW X7 as well as the BMW M5, the BMW M8, the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M, road sign detection will in future additionally take into account speed limits that are restricted in time and only apply on certain days of the week. On days other, the speed limit derived from the navigation data is displayed.

Optimised smartphone integration: Android Auto can now also be used in the vehicle in addition to Apple CarPlay.
Depending on the model series, either standard or optional smartphone integration will enable use not just of Apple CarPlay but also of the digital services provided by Android Auto in numerous current BMW models as of summer 2020. This means that owners of a smartphone with the Android operating system can now access their familiar smartphone apps in the vehicle, just like users of an Apple iPhone. These include the digital voice assistant Google Assistant, the map service Google Maps, music streaming services such as Spotify and Amazon Music, and the messaging service WhatsApp.

The systems are integrated directly in the vehicle's display and control system via a wireless LAN connection between the respective smartphone and the vehicle. Here, the driver can view all the important information from the apps on the Control Display and also navigation directions in the instrument cluster and the optional Head-Up Display.

BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series with optimised Integral Active Steering.
Sporty flair and ride comfort in the BMW 7 Series luxury sedans and the luxury sports cars of the BMW 8 Series benefit from Integral Active Steering. The optional suspension system combines a variable rack and pinion ratio on the front axle with selective co-steering of the rear wheels. Even at particularly low speeds of less than 3 km/h, the rear wheels are now countersteered. This gives the models of the BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series additional manoeuvrability when moving slowly in and out of parking spaces or passing through narrow gaps.

In addition, the BMW 7 Series will be available from July 2020 in the new exterior paint finish Phytonic Blue metallic and the BMW Individual paint finish Frozen Bluestone metallic. A fresh touch of luxury ambience is added to the interior with the BMW Individual leather steering wheel as well as the new version of the BMW Individual Merino full leather trim in the colour combination Smoke White/Night Blue/Black.

Extended Business Package for the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer, new body finishes for the BMW i3 and numerous other models
The Business Package available for the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer provides enhanced comfort and driving pleasure in city traffic as well as on lengthier trips. From July 2020 onwards it also includes Real Time Traffic Information. Another new addition to the range is the body finish in Cashmere Silver metallic, which is also available for the BMW X1. The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer will also offered in Phytonic Blue metallic and Misano Blue metallic in future.

New body finishes are available for numerous other models, too. Phytonic Blue metallic and Sunset Orange metallic versions of the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé will be on offer from July 2020. The body finish Phytonic Blue metallic will also be available for the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7 as of August 2020. What is more, the BMW X5 and BMW X6 can be fitted with the new Carbon Fibre interior trim finishers and M Carbon exterior mirror caps in conjunction with the M sports package.

The purely electrically powered models BMW i3 (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) and BMW i3s (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 14.6 – 14.0 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) will be available from summer 2020 in the new body finish Blue Ridge Mountain with accentuations in Frozen Grey metallic.

Meanwhile new BMW Individual body finishes are available for the model variants of the high-performance sports car BMW M8. For the BMW M8 Series Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 10.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 242 g/km*) and the BMW M8 Convertible (combined fuel consumption: 10.8 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 246 g/km), the Ametrin metallic variant is now newly available. For both models and for the BMW M8 Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 10.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 244 g/km), the versions Bluestone metallic, Frozen Brands Hatch Grey metallic and Frozen Motegi Red metallic are likewise available.

* All new models available from start of production in July or August 2020

Munich. It is widely known that BMW cars have always been at home on the big screen. Now, BMW is also making an impressive debut in the world of video streaming. A whole range of BMW cars will be featured alongside legendary CIA analyst and agent Jack Ryan in the new Amazon series “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”. The first season will be available exclusively on Prime Video beginning 31 August 2018.

The character of Jack Ryan, created by author Tom Clancy, is a well-known pop-culture figure that has been around since the 1990s. In the new series, John Krasinski will play the role of Jack Ryan.

Jack Ryan is an up-and-coming CIA analyst with a unique talent for analysing communication patterns who is pulled from the safety of his desk job and thrust into pursuit of terrorists across Europe and the Middle East, trying to prevent a devastating terrorist attack against the US and its allies. Wendell Pierce and Abbie Cornish join Krasinski to complete the star-studded cast.

In their pursuits, Jack Ryan and his CIA colleagues rely on the strong support of several BMW vehicles. Driving the BMW 540i xDrive Sedan with its high-performance inline six-cylinder engine (combined fuel consumption: 7.9-7.7 l/100km; combined CO2 emissions: 179-174 g/km), which accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds, the CIA agents are always one step ahead of their foes. The proven all-wheel-drive system xDrive also provides Ryan with optimum traction in extreme conditions, as illustrated by a dramatic car chase through the snow. The BMW X5 and BMW X6 are also featured in the series. A special role is reserved for a legendary model from BMW’s past: the BMW 2002, widely admired for its dynamic performance and agility.

BMW not only supports Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan with a wide range of vehicles, but also through marketing across its own high-coverage channels. BMW was also present on site at the world’s largest Comic-Con in San Diego as the official automotive sponsor. BMW, with its long film tradition, is now embarking on its first major cooperation in the streaming world with Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.

Munich. BMW continues to consistently pursue the improvement of emissions in all combustion engines in summer 2018. As of July 2018, all petrol and plug-in hybrid models of the brand available in Germany will be fitted as standard with a petrol engine particulate filter and thus will already comply with the exhaust standard Euro 6d-TEMP. BluePerformance Technology including SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue injection has been a standard feature of all BMW diesel models since March 2018. This means they all offer highly efficient, multi-stage exhaust gas treatment consisting of NOx storage catalytic converter and SCR system (Selective Catalytic Reduction). Due to the particularly effective reduction of particulate emissions achieved, these comply with what will then be the most rigorous exhaust standard, namely Euro 6d-TEMP. In addition, another 39 diesel models will be going on the market with Euro 6d-TEMP rating.

Additional model variants of the BMW X3 and the BMW X4 will be available from August 2018 onwards. As early as July 2018 there will be an increase in the number of models in the BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series, BMW 4 Series and BMW 5 Series which are fitted as standard with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. Another newcomer to the model range is the BMW 1 Series Edition Metropolitan.

For the BMW 530e iPerformance Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 2.1 – 1.9 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 14.113.1 l/100 km*; combined CO2 emissions: 49 – 44 g/km), the optional equipment item BMW Wireless Charging will be available ex works from July 2018. The option BMW Connected eDrive Services available for the BMW i and BMW iPerformance automobiles will also include the BMW Digital Charging Service in future. What is more, an aerodynamics package is available for the BMW i8 Roadster (combined fuel consumption: 2.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption 14.5 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 46 g/km).

BMW X3 and BMW X4: new model variations with in-line 6-cylinder engines.

With the premiere of the BMW X3 M40d (combined fuel consumption: 6.5 – 6.4 l/100 km; combined CO2emissions 172 – 169 g/km*), the number of engines available to choose from for the Sports Activity Vehicle in the premium mid-range segment increases to seven. What is more, this newcomer is now the second BMW M Performance model in the series. In the BMW X3 M40d, an in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine generates a peak output of 240 kW/326 hp and a maximum torque of 680 N m already available at 1 750 rpm thanks to multi-stage turbocharging and common rail direct injection with piezo injectors, accelerating the car from zero to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.

A second in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine will be offered for the Sports Activity Coupé as of August 2018. The power unit in the new BMW X4 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 6.0 – 5.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 158 – 153 g/km*) generates a peak output of 195 kW/265 hp and a maximum torque of 620 Nm. It takes the car just 5.8 seconds to accelerate from standing to 100 km/h. All new model variants of the BMW X3 and the BMW X4 are fitted as standard with an 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission.

8-speed Steptronic transmission as standard in additional models.

Fast gearshifts, a high level of shift comfort and excellent efficiency are the benefits of the 8-speed Steptronic transmission, now to become a standard feature of numerous additional BMW models as of July 2018. In the premium compact segment, the BMW 120i 3 door and the BMW 120 i 5 door (combined fuel consumption: 6.1 – 5.9 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 139 – 134 g/km) will also feature automatic gear selection as standard in future. Meanwhile the further enhanced shift dynamics of the 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission can be experienced as standard in the BMW M140i 3 door and the BMW M140i 5 door (combined fuel consumption: 7.4 – 7.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 169 – 168 g/km).

In the BMW 3 Series, eight additional models will be fitted with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission as standard from July 2018 onwards. These are the BMW 320i Gran Turismo (combined fuel consumption: 6.3 – 6.2 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 143 – 141 g/km) and the BMW 320i xDrive Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 6.5 – 6.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 148 – 146 g/km), the BMW 320i xDrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 6.7 – 6.6 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 154 – 151 g/km) and the BMW 320i xDrive Gran Turismo (combined fuel consumption: 6.8 – 6.7 l/100 km; combined COCO2 emissions 156 – 152 g/km). The models BMW 330i Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 6.1 – 6.0 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 140 – 137 g/km) and BMW 330i Touring (combined fuel consumption: 6.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 145 g/km) and BMW 340i Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 7.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 168 g/km) and the BMW 340i xDrive Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 7.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 174 g/km) will also include an automatic transmission as a standard fitting in the future.

Six model variants of the BMW 4 Series will benefit from the new standard engine-transmission combination, too: the BMW 420i Convertible (combined fuel consumption: 6.4 – 6.2 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 146 – 143 g/km), the BMW 420i xDrive Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 6.6 – 6.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 151 – 148 g/km), the BMW 430i Convertible (combined fuel consumption: 6.5 – 6.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 148 – 144 g/km) and the BMW 430i Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 6.1 – 6.0 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 140 – 137 g/km) and the BMW 440i Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 7.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 170 g/km) and the BMW 440i xDrive Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 7.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 174 g/km).

The range of models fitted as standard with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission in future is rounded off with the BMW 520d Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 4.6 – 4.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 121 – 117 g/km) and the BMW 520d Touring (combined fuel consumption: 4.9 – 4.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 128 – 123 g/km).

Well equipped for the city: BMW 1 Series Edition Metropolitan.

Urban mobility in a premium compact model takes on an extra touch of style in the BMW 1 Series Edition Metropolitan. The Edition model, available as a BMW 1 Series 3 door and a BMW 1 Series 5, has numerous equipment features that are specifically designed to enhance comfort and driving pleasure in urban traffic. These include the navigation system Business, Park Distance Control with sensors at the front and rear of the vehicle, rear view camera, parking assistant, road sign detection, Speed Limit Info, Comfort Access and an instrument cluster with extended features. The Edition model is available in conjunction with the Urban Line model and all engine variants with the exception of the BMW M140i.

New paint finishes and interior design features for the BMW 5 Series and the BMW 6er Gran Turismo.

The selection of paint finishes for the BMW 5 Series Sedan and the BMW 5 Series Touring will be extended in summer 2018 to include the variant Frozen Dark Silver metallic, whose silken matt surface creates a particularly expressive look. This body finish will also be offered for the high-performance sedan BMW M5 (combined fuel consumption: 10.5 l/100km; combined CO2 emissions: 241 g/100km, provisional values), for which it is also possible to select the variant Frozen Marina Bay Blue metallic – likewise a new option.

From July 2018, the optionally available electroplating applications for selected controls will make for an exclusive sheen in the interior of the BMW 5 Series Sedan, the BMW 5 Series Touring and the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo. This high-quality surface refinement is applied to the steering wheel switches, the start/stop button, the volume control on the audio system, the air conditioning controls and the switch panels on the driver and front passenger doors.

BMW 7 Series: BMW Individual composition that can be combined with other exterior finishes.

The BMW Individual composition provides a highly exclusive ambience in the interior of the BMW 7 Series Sedan by means of exquisite materials and a subtly harmonised colour scheme. The option comprising BMW Individual full Merino fine-grain leather trim, BMW Individual interior trim finishers, a BMW Individual leather steering wheel and a BMW Individual roof liner can be combined with additional body finishes from July 2018 onwards. In future the selection will also include the variants Alpine White non-metallic, Sapphire Black metallic, Kashmir Silver metallic, Glacier Silver metallic, Imperial Blue Brilliant Effect metallic, Sophisto Grey Brilliant Effect metallic, Mineral White metallic, Jatoba metallic, Magellan Grey metallic, Arctic Grey Brilliant Effect metallic and Atlas Cedar metallic.

Aerodynamics package for the BMW i8 Roadster.

The plug-in hybrid drive of the BMW i8 Roadster (combined fuel consumption 2,0 l/100 km; combined electricity consumption 14,5 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 46 g/km) guarantees a particularly progressive combination of sporty dynamic performance and efficiency for open-top driving. The car's supreme driving properties can be further optimised by means of the new aerodynamics package. This is made up of a dual-section front splitter and a spoiler lip for the rear of the two-seater model.

Charging is simpler than fuelling: launch of BMW Wireless Charging.

The innovative option BMW Wireless Charging offers maximum comfort when charging the high-voltage battery of a plug-in hybrid model. BMW is the world's first automobile manufacturer to offer a system of inductive charging where a cable is no longer required to feed electric current into the vehicle's battery. From 2018, BMW Wireless Charging will be among the optional equipment items available for the BMW 530e iPerformance ex works: it comprises a "car pad" for the vehicle and an inductive charging station known as a "ground pad", which can be installed on the floor of a garage, for example.

The contactless transfer of energy is carried out via an electromagnetic field between the two components and can be initiated as soon as the vehicle has reached park position over the ground pad. This makes charging a high-voltage battery even easier than filling a fuel tank.

New for BMW i and BMW i Performance automobiles: BMW Connected eDrive Services with BMW Digital Charging Service.

In future, the option BMW Connected eDrive Services will cover all digital services that help optimise comfort, everyday practicality and efficiency in vehicles that are electrically powered. This new optional equipment feature will be available from July 2018 for the BMW i3 (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption 13.6 – 13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 0 g/km) and the BMW i3s (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: l/100 km; combined power consumption 14.3 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 0 g/km), the BMW i8 Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 1.8 l/100 km; combined power consumption 14.0 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 42 g/km) and the BMW i8 Roadster as well as for the BMW 225xe iPerformance (combined fuel consumption: 2.5 – 2.3 l/100 km; combined power consumption 13.7 – 13.4 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions 57 – 52 g/km) and the BMW 530e iPerformance. It includes Remote Services, which allows the doors to be remotely locked and unlocked, and also eDrive Services complete with charging station search, as well as enabling the range and charge status to be displayed on a smartphone.

What is more, the BMW Digital Charging Service can be used in the first three years after the car has been newly registered. This enables intelligent charging with optimised cost efficiency and preferential use of self-generated solar power.

Munich. BMW has performed extremely well once again in the latest readers’ polls conducted by German magazines “CHIP” and “auto, motor und sport” with a series of top placings. The infotainment and connectivity technology available in current BMW models earned the brand victory in four out of the eleven categories in the 2017 Car Connectivity Award jointly organised by the two magazines. These included the title of Connected Car of the Year for the new BMW 5 Series. As well as seamless connectivity, design is also a crucial factor in the popularity of new models. Victory for the BMW 2 Series Coupe and the BMW 4 Series Coupe/BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe in the 2017 Autonis design contest run by “auto, motor und sport” is further evidence of just how much the sporting elegance that characterises the brand’s latest models appeals to the public.

Connected with the digital world: four top spots in the Car Connectivity Award.

The new BMW 5 Series came out top in the Connected Car category of the 2017 Car Connectivity Award after scooping 35.4 per cent of the votes. The addition of new features to the extensive existing portfolio of BMW Connected and BMW ConnectedDrive services sees the sedan set new benchmarks for connectivity. Innovations such as the digital parking space search service On-Street Parking Information, the Remote 3D View function and hazard warnings using car-to-car communication were all introduced in the new 5 Series.

Infotainment and connectivity technologies from BMW picked up three more of the titles included in the fourth edition of the Car Connectivity Award. The readers of “CHIP” and “auto, motor und sport” identified the BMW Navigation system Professional (40.9 per cent of the votes) as their favourite. The system makes a winning impression with its intuitive operation, accurate map display and fast, reliable route guidance. The latest generation of the Navigation system Professional offers faster start-up, even quicker route calculation and more realistic 3D graphics in urban areas. The navigation system is adaptive, too, meaning that if the driver keeps diverting from a suggested route, the system will start to propose the new route as the default choice to the destination in question.

The list of options available in conjunction with the Navigation system Professional includes the WiFi hotspot, which offers a high-speed internet connection for up to ten mobile devices. This optional feature won the Entertainment/Multimedia category, with 28.0 per cent of the votes. Finally, a BMW system also prevailed in the Control Concepts/Displays category. The Control Display with touchscreen capability – which further enhances the iDrive operating system’s supremely intuitive, convenient and secure functionality – got the thumbs up from 23.7 per cent of readers.

2017 Autonis readers’ poll: double honours for sporting elegance.

BMW also excelled in the readers’ poll to find the most attractive new automotive designs, with wins in two classes. This was the 17th time that “auto, motor und sport” had staged this automotive beauty contest, and this time it asked its readership to choose the Autonis winners from 88 current models spanning eleven vehicle classes. In the compact class, the BMW 2 Series Coupe scored the highest number of votes. The two-door model is the latest in a long line of sporty and compact BMW models that extend back to the 02 and have lost none of their fascinating allure. The Autonis trophy for the most attractive design in the mid-size class, meanwhile, was shared by the BMW 4 Series Coupe and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. Despite their very distinct underlying concepts, the duo share a sporty, elegant design language that gives them both the dynamic and individual charisma for which the brand is renowned.

The victories in the Autonis poll extend two remarkable winning streaks. Shortly after their launch, both the BMW 2 Series Coupe and BMW 4 Series Coupe were presented with the iF Design Award and red dot award for outstanding product design by expert juries. They instantly won over the public, too, recording class victories in the 2014 edition of the Autonis survey. Following the latest model updates, they have now demonstrated the enduring appeal of their design to impressive effect with renewed success in the “auto, motor und sport” poll.

Munich. Parallel to the start of the largest model initiative in the history of the brand, BMW is also increasing the attractiveness and diversity within the range of existing series with a multitude of new features being introduced in the autumn of 2017. From November 2017, the new BMW M550d xDrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 6.7 – 6.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 176 – 168 g/km) and the new BMW 640d xDrive Gran Turismo (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 – 5.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 163 – 153 g/km) will become available, whilst as from December 2017, two new petrol engine variants will be offered for the new BMW X3. Furthermore, the choice of special equipment features for the new BMW X3 will be complemented by exclusive exterior and interior options by BMW Individual.

The BMW X1 xDrive20d (combined fuel consumption: 4.8 – 4.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 127 – 123 g/km) will in future come with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. Moreover, as from November 2017, the range of optional light alloy wheels for the compact Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) will be complemented by five new variants. In addition to the introduction of the BMW Connected Services Microsoft Office 365 with Skype for Business, the upgrade of BMW Connected+ with new personalised digital mobility services will ensure further advancement in the field of intelligent networking. Starting in the autumn of 2017, the number of cities in which the digital parking space search service On-Street Parking Information can be utilized will increase even further.

New BMW M Performance model: BMW M550d xDrive Touring featuring the most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine available worldwide.

From November 2017, the fleet of exceptionally sporty BMW M Performance automobiles will be complemented by a fascinatingly powerful but also impressively efficient model variant of the new BMW 5 Series Touring. The new BMW M550d xDrive Touring will feature the most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine available worldwide. The M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology used on the 3-litre, straight six-cylinder power unit comprises multi-stage charging with four turbochargers and Common Rail direct injection operating at a maximum pressure of more than 2,500 bar. A maximum power output of 294 kW/400 hp and a peak torque of 760 Nm available between 2, 000 and 3, 000 rpm ensure spontaneous response and constant power delivery across the entire speed range.

The BMW M550d xDrive Touring brings its exceptional engine performance to the tarmac via an 8-speed sports transmission and intelligent rear-wheel oriented four-wheel drive technology and accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. The sporty diesel engine convinces not only with highly responsive performance characteristics, but also with impressive fuel economy. Combined fuel consumption of the new BMW M550d xDrive Touring is between 6.7 and 6.4 litres per 100 km with CO2 emission levels of 176 to 168 grams per km (figures as per EU test cycle, depending on selected tyre size).

Included in the standard equipment range for the BMW M550d xDrive Touring are, inter alia, an M sports suspension, Integral Active Steering and model-specific exterior and interior features. Moreover, 19-inch M light alloy wheels with mixed tyres and the M sports brake system underscore the BMW M Performance model’s dynamic character.

Superior and efficient: The new BMW 640d xDrive Gran Turismo.

As from November 2017, the model range of the new BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo will be extended with the production start of a second diesel engine variant. The new BMW 640d xDrive Gran Turismo combines sporty performance and supreme ride comfort with a high level of efficiency. Its 3-litre straight six-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology features multi-stage charging with variable intake geometry for the high and low pressure chargers as well as Common Rail direct injection. It delivers 235 kW/320 hp and a maximum torque of 680 Nm.

In conjunction with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission and the intelligent four-wheel drive system xDrive, the powerful diesel engine allows the new BMW 640d xDrive Gran Turismo to accelerate from 0 to100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. Combined fuel consumption is between 6.2 and 5.8 litres per 100 km, with corresponding CO2 emission levels of 163 to 153 grams per km (figures as per EU test cycle, depending on selected tyre size).

The BMW X3: Starting with two additional engines and special equipment features by BMW Individual.

In December 2017, just a few weeks after the market launch of the new BMW X3, two four-cylinder petrol engines are to be added to the drive portfolio. In addition to BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with Twin Scroll turbo charger, High Precision Injection, fully variable valve control VALVETRONIC and variable camshaft control Double VANOS, both 2-litre power units also boast a weight-optimised design and a new engine encapsulation system for optimising acoustic characteristics and warm-up behaviour. They come as standard with the combination of an 8-speed Steptronic transmission and intelligent four-wheel drive technology BMW xDrive

The engine featured in the new BMW X3 xDrive20i delivers a maximum power output of 135 kW/184 hp and a peak torque of 290 Nm. The car’s sporty characteristics are reflected in an acceleration of 8.3 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h, an exceptionally economical average fuel consumption of between 7.3 and 7.1 litres per 100 km and CO2 emission levels of 168 to 163 grams per km. The second petrol engine delivers a power output of 185 kW/252 hp and 350 Nm of torque, allowing the new BMW X3 xDrive30i to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. Combined fuel consumption is between 7.3 and 7.2 litres per 100 km with CO2 emission levels of 168 to 164 grams per km (figures as per EU test cycle, depending on selected tyre size).

The extra dose of luxury and exclusiveness added to the new BMW X3’s character is also reflected in the extensive range of products offered by BMW Individual. The BMW Individual body colour variant Sun Stone metallic effectively accentuates the powerfully modelled surfaces of the Sports Activity Vehicle in a most impressive manner. The sophisticated interior ambience is created by the BMW Individual upgraded leather trim Merino in the colour combinations Fiona Red/Black, Ivory White and Tartufo, door sills bearing the BMW Individual lettering and BMW Individual interior trim strips in a black piano gloss finish.

BMW X1 xDrive20d now with 8-speed Steptronic transmission as standard, new light alloy wheels for the compact SAV.

Starting November 2017, the 140 kW/190 hp four-cylinder engine in the BMW X1 xDrive20d will come as standard in conjunction with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission, allowing the compact SAV to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. Average fuel consumption of the BMW X1 xDrive20d is between 4.8 and 4.7 litres per 100 km and CO2 emissions 127 to 123 grams per km (figures as per EU test cycle, depending on selected tyre size).

Furthermore, the range of light alloy wheels optionally available for the BMW X1 will be upgraded. The choice will comprise five new variants ranging from 17-inch wheels with aerodynamically optimised turbine styling to 19-inch M light alloy wheels in a double-spoke design and bicolour optics.

Enhanced networking and productivity inside the vehicle: Microsoft Office 365 with Skype for Business, On-Street Parking Information in further European cities.

With the integrated function Microsoft Office 365, BMW is the first manufacturer to offer a safe server connection for the exchange and processing of mails, calendar entries and contact data. This function allows direct transfer of addresses from calendar entries into the navigation system and selection of telephone numbers via the connected mobile telephone. Moreover, from the end of September 2017, it will be possible to use the Unified Communication solution Skype for Business from Microsoft inside the car. This service is also fully integrated into the onboard iDrive control system. Upcoming telephone conferences are automatically identified. It is possible to participate simply by pressing the controller. During the journey, the name of those taking part in the discussion can be shown on the Control Display. The new BMW ConnectedDrive service will first be available in Germany, Great Britain and France. Additional countries are to follow at the end of 2017.

From the autumn of 2017, the number of European cities in which the unique On-Street Parking Information service, which assists the driver in finding a free parking space at the roadside, will be extended even further. The digital parking space finder, which is available in conjunction with the Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) service for all current BMW models, can be also used in the Swedish cities of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö as well as in the French cities of Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Nantes and Toulouse. Moreover, the cities of London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol, Sheffield, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Belfast in the UK have been added to this list.

BMW Connected with new services.

The intelligent networking of the vehicle and the driver’s Smartphone will be further intensified with the service package BMW Connected+. Since July 2017 the extended range of digital services has been available for all current BMW models and BMW i models and comprises the highly personalised and simple display of Smartphone contents inside the car as well as new mobility services.

Munich. From the summer of 2017, greater diversity in the engine portfolio of the new BMW 5 Series, an extended range of standard equipment for many models as well as new functions and additional options in the areas of light technology, operation, comfort and connectivity will enhance the attractiveness of the BMW vehicle range. Starting in July, the Sedan and Touring models of the new BMW 5 Series will be available in a new entry-level variant featuring a four-cylinder petrol engine. Furthermore, there will be a choice of two additional diesel engines with four or six cylinders respectively.

The BMW 2 Series Tourer and the BMW X1 will be equipped with a further enhanced petrol engine with 3 cylinders. The extended range of standard equipment features will comprise, inter alia, further driver assistance systems and a multifunction instrument display for the BMW 7 Series and the ConnectedDrive navigation package for the BMW X5 and the BMW X6. All model variants of the BMW 3 Series Sedan and Touring will in future come with LED headlights and light alloy wheels as standard equipment. In keeping with their dynamic character, the most powerful diesel or petrol models will now be offered at least in the Sport Line equipment configuration.

As from July, the Control Display of the iDrive operating system will feature in many additional models a functional menu boasting a sophisticated tile arrangement with animated live graphics. Moreover, it will also be possible to use the central monitor as a touch screen if the vehicle is equipped with the navigation system Professional or with the option Navigation or Navigation Plus respectively. The functional range of the traffic situation display Real Time Traffic Information has also been further enhanced. The new hazard warning system is based on intelligent networking and car-to-car communication. The digital parking space search service On-Street Parking Information is now available in seven additional European cities.
