BMW continues to forge ahead.
BMW WilliamsF1 Team is World Championship runner-up in its third year.
Munich. BMW has achieved its next intermediate target: second place in the FIA
Formula One Constructors? World Championship in the third year after its
comeback. This season, the ten-cylinder powerplant from Munich propelled the
BMW WilliamsF1 Team and its drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and
Ralf Schumacher to a one-two victory and a further eleven podium places.
In the 16th of 17 Grands Prix, the team laid an early claim to second place in
the World Championship. In the reliability rankings the BMW WilliamsF1 Team
even finished the 2002 season in first place: no other team had logged so many
racing laps ?1,963 out of a possible 2,180.
There were three more records that nobody could equal: best engine performance,
highest rev count, and the earliest test outing for the new 2003 engine. The
final evolution of the P82, in action since Monza, delivered
900 bhp and clocked over 19,000 revolutions a minute. At Monza it helped
Montoya to set the fastest qualifying lap in the history of Formula One.
The P83, the engine lined up for the 2003 season, made its debut in test drives
at Barcelona on 18 September 2002.
In the period from 7 January 2002 to the season?s final race, the
BMW WilliamsF1 Team logged 48,605 test kilometres on nine different circuits in
five countries (Barcelona/ESP, Danielson/FRA, Estoril/PRT, Jerez/ESP,
Ladaux/FRA, Miramas/FRA, Monza/ITA, Silverstone/GBR and Valencia/ESP). The
greatest number of laps by far were claimed by the
team?s official test drivers, Spaniard Marc Gené and Antonio Pizzonia of
Brazil. Ricardo Sperafico (BRA), Olivier Beretta (FRA) and Matthew Gilmore
(GBR) also took part in brief test outings.
