Farfus to make DTM debut in the Castrol EDGE BMW M3 DTM.
Munich, 12th April 2012. BMW Motorsport and technical partners Castrol EDGE, today unveiled Augusto Farfus (BR) as the driver of the Castrol EDGE BMW M3 DTM for the manufacturer’s first season in the series for twenty years. The 28-year-old Brazilian will be competing in the number 16 Castrol EDGE BMW M3 DTM for the year’s eleven race events.
As “Premier Technical Partner”, Castrol has been a member of the BMW Motorsport family for many years. Its high-performance lubricants have contributed significantly to the success of BMW cars on the racetrack.
“Since my debut as a BMW works driver in the 2007 season, I have always enjoyed working with Castrol,” said Farfus. “At the latest test, our engineers went into great detail to explain to me the cooperation between BMW and Castrol with regard to the engine and gearbox oil, and how the quality of the lubricant affects the car’s performance. It is very impressive. I would never have imagined that so much work could be involved in producing the right oil. That is why I am very pleased to be setting out on my first season in the DTM in the Castrol EDGE BMW M3 DTM.”
The newly developed engine oil Castrol EDGE FST™ will be used in the six BMW M3 DTM cars when BMW makes its DTM comeback in 2012. FST™ stands for “Fluid Strength Technology”. FST™ allows the oil to produce outstanding results. It constantly adapts to the pressure in the engine, making it both low-friction and significantly stronger than comparable lubricants.
Before they are deployed on the racetrack, the oils are put through their paces at the Castrol Technology Centre in Pangbourne (GB). In the “Extreme Maximum Power Test”, experts evaluate how the power output develops at full throttle over a simulated race distance. Only formulations that allow the highest performance values are even considered for use in motor racing. The “Durability Test” gives the oil another tough examination. The oils must prove they can maintain outstanding properties on the engine test bench for 60 hours.
