DTM Grand Prix, Nürburgring, 5th + 6th Round, 24-25 May 2003
Double Win for Maxi Goetz
The Nürburgring track produced two interesting races in the Formula BMW ADAC
Championship, with Maximilian Goetz winning both of them. "Two pole positions,
two victories - I had a brilliant weekend," the 17-year-old stated happily. The
Bavarian driver won the race on Saturday, Michael Devaney (IRL/Team Rosberg)
came second and Sebastian Vettel (Heppenheim/Eifelland Racing) third. On Sunday
Goetz dominated Vettel (2nd) and Robby Coleman (3rd) (IRL/HBR Motorsport).
"It is better to drink champagne. It only burns your eyes," said Goetz after he
was showered with sparkling wine while celebrating his victories on the podium.
He hurried off, wet but happy, for further celebrations with his team. Maxi
Goetz now leads the Championship with 96 points.
Goetz' greatest rival in the fight for the title, Sebastian Vettel, especially
enjoyed the race on Sunday. Vettel had a sleepy start and was positioned 5th on
the grid, but woke up after a while. "I started overtaking. It was fun, because
sometimes it was really close," said Vettel with a smile. The result of the
weekend places Vettel, the only 15-year-old competitor, 1st in the Rookie Cup
Championship and 2nd in the overall championship.
The international flair of the Formula BMW ADAC Championship was provided by
two Irishmen: Michael Devaney rode a furious race on Saturday and Robby Coleman
fought against the Brazilian Atila Abreu (Team Rosberg) and the Finn Aki Rask
(ADAC Berlin-Brandenburg) on Sunday.
Rounds seven and eight of the Formula BMW ADAC Championship will be held at the
EuroSpeedway Lausitz on May 7th to 8th.
