Beijing. The BMW Group’s exhibition stand at Auto China 2026 is dedicated entirely to the Neue Klasse. In Beijing, the new BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase, the new BMW i3 Long Wheelbase, and the new BMW 7 Series featuring Neue Klasse technologies are celebrating their world premieres. “With the introduction of the new BMW iX3 for China, the BMW i3 for China, and the new BMW 7 Series, we are marking an important milestone in the biggest future project in BMW’s history: the Neue Klasse. The BMW iX3 and BMW i3: world premieres for the first two Neue Klasse models developed specifically for China.

The first Neue Klasse models developed in China for China are celebrating their world premieres at Auto China 2026: the new BMW iX3 and the new BMW i3. Both models embody the leap into a new era and reflect BMW’s ambition to lead innovation in China, the company’s largest single market, particularly in electrification, digitalisation, and software-defined vehicles.

With their distinctive Neue Klasse design language, the BMW iX3 and the new BMW i3 herald a new era in BMW design. Both models combine typical BMW proportions with a pared-back, more technical design language. Key features include a reinterpretation of the iconic BMW kidney grille, integrated light signatures, and forward-oriented lines.

Both the new BMW iX3 and the new BMW i3 are based on the sixth generation of BMW eDrive technology (Gen6). A key feature of Gen6 BMW eDrive technology is the cylindrical cell technology of the high-voltage battery. This enables a range of more than 900 kilometres on a single charge in the new BMW iX3, according to the CLTC cycle. In the new BMW i3, the maximum range, according to the CLTC cycle, exceeds 1,000 kilometres. Thanks to the Neue Klasse’s 800-volt architecture, both models can be charged at a fast-charging station with a peak charging power of 400 kW. According to the CLTC standard, this allows enough energy for up to 400 kilometres of driving to be added in ten minutes.

This step also marks the beginning of a cross-segment and cross-powertrain technology roll-out that will benefit all future BMW models.

The new BMW 7 Series combines the strengths of a luxury sedan with innovative Neue Klasse technologies to deliver a comprehensive digital user experience that places both the driver and the passengers centre stage. New driver assistance systems in the BMW 7 Series.

The comprehensively upgraded Level 2 driver assistance systems in the new BMW 7 Series enable hands-free driving on motorways at speeds of up to 130 km/h in many European countries, the United States, and Canada, including automated lane changes following eye confirmation and “Entry-to-Exit” assistance. The City Assistant offers navigation-guided “Address-to-Address” driver assistance through BMW Symbiotic Drive. ^[2] BMW Symbiotic Drive ensures seamless interaction between assistance systems and human driving behaviour. The driver’s intention to accelerate, brake, or steer merges intuitively with AI-supported software. The BMW 7 Series relies on driver assistance technologies that were specifically adapted for the Chinese market.

New “Address-to-Address” driver assistance system specifically for the Chinese market.

Beginning with the BMW iX3, BMW is introducing a new driver assistance system developed specifically for Chinese traffic conditions. By the end of 2027, it will be available in 12 BMW models in China, including the new BMW 7 Series and BMW i3. For more than 20 years, BMW has been a pioneer in the development of driver assistance systems, always placing safety and reliability under complex, real-world conditions at the forefront. For the new generation of intelligent BMW driver assistance in China, BMW combines decades of experience in functional integration and operational safety with the strengths of locally trained end-to-end AI, developed in partnership with the Chinese company Momenta. The result is a unique system for navigation-guided “Address-to-Address” driver assistance. The central computer for automated driving works in harmony with the “Heart of Joy”. In the new iX3 and i3, BMW Soft-Stop technology delivers the smoothest assisted driving experience to date.

Another highlight of these new driver assistance technologies is the unique cooperative braking system. When driver assistance is activated, it allows the driver to influence the system with light braking input without deactivating assistance. This function underlines BMW’s symbiotic philosophy for Level 2 driver assistance systems, including in China. As a result, the driver remains involved in a collaborative interaction between human and artificial intelligence. The entire user experience with BMW Panoramic iDrive is designed to ensure that the driver is always informed about the system’s status and remains intuitively attentive.

A digital leap forward: BMW Panoramic iDrive and the digital user experience for China.

With the start of the Neue Klasse, the display and control concept becomes a key driver of the in-vehicle digital user experience. At its heart is BMW Panoramic iDrive, which will be shown for the first time in China in models with Neue Klasse technologies presented at Auto China 2026. These cutting-edge technologies were adapted to meet local market needs.

It is based on BMW Operating System X. The system is designed to be scalable within the brand: core functions, architecture, and design principles are globally uniform, while content, services, and technologies can be adapted to specific markets and regions.

This scalability allows BMW to tailor digital functions to different usage habits and regulatory frameworks. One example is voice interaction: while BMW relies on Amazon technologies in Europe and the United States, in China, it uses a proprietary solution developed in collaboration with local technology partners such as DeepSeek. This way, BMW integrates different technological approaches within the same system architecture without compromising quality, safety, or user experience.

BMW has comprehensively enhanced the digital system for the Chinese market. This goes beyond localisation, representing a version designed for China. Around 70 per cent of the Chinese version of the BMW Operating System X is developed in local development centres. On-site teams contribute their expertise in Chinese user behaviour, for example, in voice interaction, navigation, personalisation, and the integration of digital ecosystems.

A key factor in this success is close collaboration with leading Chinese technology companies. Together with partners like Alibaba, DeepSeek, Amap, and Huawei, BMW develops digital functions and services that integrate deeply into the Chinese ecosystem. These collaborations support the integration of modern AI technologies, local services, and content into the in-car experience.

Navigation is also deeply integrated into the overall digital experience. In collaboration with Amap, BMW offers high-resolution, lane-accurate navigation in China that precisely visualises complex traffic situations and urban junctions. The content appears consistently across all relevant display levels for safe and intuitive navigation.

Furthermore, BMW Panoramic iDrive opens up new possibilities for personalisation. Configurable content, customisable widgets, and AI-powered functions allow the digital vehicle experience to adapt to different usage scenarios, from daily commuting and family journeys to business trips.

That is why China plays a key role in the BMW Group’s global digital strategy. The combination of scalable system architecture, local development expertise, and close partnerships with Chinese technology companies allows BMW to implement market-specific digital innovations while making them available worldwide.

The BMW iX3 Flow Edition demonstrates the production-ready status of BMW E Ink technology.

The world premiere of the new BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase at Auto China 2026 is accompanied by the BMW iX3 Flow Edition concept car. It offers a striking example of the transition from a static to a dynamic vehicle surface. Its E Ink technology, seamlessly integrated into the bonnet, allows the driver to choose among eight carefully selected animations at the touch of a button. Integrated into a large-scale bodywork element for the first time, the concept car demonstrates the technology’s readiness for series production.

Special editions and one-offs highlight the diversity of the MINI brand.

With its diverse vehicle portfolio, MINI underscores its commitment to individual design and a broad range of character at Auto China 2026. This includes several special editions highlighting the brand’s design and heritage, including the MINI Paul Smith Special Edition, as well as various models from the high-performance John Cooper Works sub-brand.

A highlight of the display is the one-off MINI x Vagabund. Based on the MINI Countryman, two unique vehicles were created in collaboration with the Austrian design studio Vagabund. With a bespoke sound system, striking graphic accents, and an expressive colour scheme, the MINI concept cars become a mobile soundstage, embodying a spirit of adventure, community culture, and festival lifestyle. One of the two MINI x Vagabund vehicles will be presented in Beijing.

MINI will also showcase the MINI JCW “The Skeg” at Auto China 2026. The model is the result of a collaboration with Deux ex Machina and combines influences from surf and motorsport culture to highlight the sporty, progressive side of the MINI brand.

A series production preview of BMW’s hydrogen fuel cell technology: the BMW iX5 Hydrogen prototype in ‘Flow Emergence’ design.

Another eye-catcher at the BMW Group’s exhibition stand at Auto China 2026 is the redesigned vehicle from the BMW Hydrogen Pilot Fleet, which has been in global operation since 2023. From 2028, the new BMW iX5 Hydrogen will become the first BMW series-production vehicle powered by a hydrogen fuel cell drive. In doing so, the BMW Group is bringing the benefits of this technology into everyday use: electric driving with long ranges and short refuelling stops.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen from the pilot fleet, presented at Auto China 2026, also draws attention with its design concept developed by Designworks Shanghai. Thematically aligned with BMW’s hydrogen fuel cell technology, the wrap concept, developed under the motto ‘Flow Emergence’, uses water as a metaphor to visualise the generation and transformation of energy in nature. Inspired by water landscapes and Far Eastern watercolour painting, it illustrates the condensation of time and energy. The flowing visual language, with gentle colour gradients, conveys the transition from stillness to movement and the unfolding from within. The design of the pilot fleet vehicle at Auto China 2026 symbolises the continuous transformation of energy for climate-friendly and sustainable mobility in the future.

Innovation and bespoke individuality across 4,400 square metres of exhibition space.

The BMW Group is exhibiting its BMW and MINI brands at Auto China 2026 across a record exhibition space of around 4,400 square metres. This space is almost three times larger than in 2024 and underscores the importance of the Chinese market to the company. The exhibition stand showcases a total of 42 vehicles, including 28 BMW vehicles and 14 MINI vehicles, with three world premieres and 14 vehicles that are individualised, customised, classic cars, or special edition cars. Two BMW motorcycles will also be featured at Auto China 2026.

The BMW Highlight Show, featuring a 300-square-metre LED wall, presents the new BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase and the new BMW 7 Series to visitors throughout the day. Through interactive exhibits, ten ‘Deep Dive’ stations invite visitors to explore the latest technologies and charging solutions, including robotics and bidirectional charging. The extensive BMW Individual range is illustrated through an exhibition of 164 paint samples and 36 leather samples. An immersive audio experience with Dolby Atmos and Bowers & Wilkins creates an exceptional sound environment.

Novi BMW iX3 40 (kombinirana poraba električne energije: 14,6 kWh/100 km; razred CO₂: A; električni doseg: do 635 km; po WLTP)¹ se v ponudbo uvršča kot vstopni model.

Novi BMW iX3 40 je opremljen s povsem novo, šesto generacijo tehnologije BMW eDrive (Gen6), ki je bila razvita posebej za družino Neue Klasse in pomeni velik tehnološki preskok. Vse komponente so zasnovane za 800‑voltno tehnologijo. Izpopolnjen pogonski sistem EESM z izjemno visoko učinkovitostjo je nameščen na zadnji osi in poganja zadnja kolesa. Litij-ionske cilindrične celice imajo 20 % večjo energijsko gostoto kot prizmatične celice prejšnje (Gen5) generacije in so neposredno integrirane v baterijo po principu cell‑to‑pack. Konstrukcija pack‑to‑open‑body pomeni, da baterija deluje kot nosilni del vozila, kar zmanjšuje količino materiala in maso vozila.

Novi BMW iX3 40 po WLTP doseže do 635 km dosega¹. Največja polnilna moč znaša 300 kW¹. By 2027, the technologies of the Neue Klasse will be integrated into a total of 40 new models and model updates from BMW.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant expanded with Amazon Alexa+.
One year after the world premiere of the new BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X at CES 2025, visitors to this year’s CES can experience the revolutionary user-interaction concept firsthand in the BMW iX3. With a balanced combination of digital functions and physical elements, it elevates intuitive operation according to BMW’s guiding principle ‘Hands on the Wheel, Eyes on the Road’ to a new level of driver orientation. Built on the technological foundation of a software-defined vehicle, the customer experience in the BMW iX3 continues to evolve. For the first time, BMW presents the next generation AI-powered BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. BMW is the first manufacturer to expand its voice assistant with the AI assistant Amazon Alexa+. This enables intuitive and intelligent interaction between passengers and the vehicle in a natural dialogue. The interaction includes the operation of vehicle functions as well as access to information and knowledge beyond the vehicle. For the first time, passengers can ask multiple questions in a single sentence—covering both your vehicle’s features and e.g. general knowledge topics.

The integration of Amazon Alexa+ into the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant represents a technological leap forward that focuses on added value for the customer. The AI technology used in the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is a Large Language Model (LLM), a generative AI that understands language and is capable of formulating its own responses. Starting in the second half of 2026 at the latest, this further development will be gradually rolled out in Germany and the USA across all BMW models equipped with BMW Operating System 9 and X. BMW iX3 transforms waiting time into entertainment: stream a movie, play a video game or make a video call.^[1]
The BMW booth at CES also focuses on the wide range of entertainment options in BMW Operating System X. It offers an extensive selection of apps, videos, and games. In addition to the popular streaming service Disney+, customers in the BMW iX3 have access to the Video App (powered by TiVo™). This app enables video streaming on the central display when the vehicle is stationary, with a continuously growing selection of content such as news, live, and on-demand streaming. The portfolio of the video streaming platform will continue to evolve.

The BMW ConnectedDrive Store will also soon include the YouTube Music app for the first time, joining the more than 85 apps worldwide in categories such as Music & Audio, Entertainment, Gaming, News, Travel & Local. YouTube Music gives customers access to an extensive catalog with over 300 million tracks, including the official studio recordings, remixes, live performances, and hard-to-find covers. Zoom now allows video calls on the iX3’s central display for the first time when the vehicle is stationary. As soon as the vehicle starts moving, the video transmission stops, and the conversation seamlessly continues via audio.

In-car gaming via AirConsole, as introduced for the first time with the BMW Operating System 8.5, is also available in the new BMW iX3, featuring world-renowned titles like UNO^®️ Car Party!
A new highlight in AirConsole’s extensive game library is Hot Wheels: Xtreme Overdrive™️ from Mattel, available exclusively to BMW customers. AirConsole allows users to use their own smartphones as controllers, so all passengers can play together or compete against each other. Additional games and apps for in-car entertainment can be accessed through the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. Selected games in the BMW iX3 can also be controlled using Bluetooth controllers from conventional gaming consoles.

Sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology: higher efficiency, more range, faster charging.
The sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology developed for the Neue Klasse comprises highly efficient electric motors, fundamentally new high-voltage batteries with cylindrical cells, and 800V technology. The BMW iX3 50 xDrive is powered by two electric motors, which together generate output of 345 kW/469 hp and 645 Nm (475 lb-ft) of torque. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 210 km/h (130 mph). Its electric all-wheel-drive configuration consists of an extensively upgraded electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) with particularly high levels of efficiency at the rear axle and, at the front axle, a new asynchronous motor (ASM) distinguished by its compact design and high cost efficiency. The combination of EESM and ASM is evidence of the BMW Group’s commitment to technological neutrality within electric mobility as well. The drive technology developed for the Neue Klasse reduces energy losses by 40 per cent compared to fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, weight by 10 per cent and manufacturing costs by 20 per cent.

The new high-voltage battery concept with cylindrical cells for the Neue Klasse also achieves significant advances. The energy density on a cell level is 20 per cent higher than with fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, and the new concept also paves the way for a 30 per cent increase in charging speed. The cylindrical cells are integrated directly into the high-voltage battery (“cell to pack”), which benefits energy density and cost efficiency. Added to which, the high-voltage battery is integrated into the vehicle architecture as a structural component to minimise weight (“pack to open body”). The high-voltage battery in the BMW iX3 50 xDrive has a usable energy content of 108.7 kWh, enabling a range of up to 805 kilometres (500 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

BMW Charging: short charging times, premiere for bidirectional charging.
The advances brought by sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology have a significant influence on the charging experience, too. A maximum charging rate of 400 kW enables users to fill their new BMW iX3 with enough energy at an 800V direct current (DC) rapid charging station to add up to 372 kilometres (231 miles) ^[2] of range in just ten minutes. The high-voltage battery can charge from 10 to 80 per cent capacity in 21 minutes. Thanks to the battery management tech with integrated switching matrix developed completely in-house by the BMW Group, the new BMW iX3 can also be charged from 400V DC stations. Upgrades to the battery preparation also help to shorten charging times. The new BMW iX3 50 xDrive can top up on alternating current (AC) at 11 kW as standard or 22 kW ^[3] as an option.

Extensive bidirectional charging functions ^[3] are also available for the new BMW iX3, meaning that it can be used as an energy supply source for a variety of applications. The Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function turns the new BMW iX3 into a mobile powerbank, which can supply electric devices with power while on the move. Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) hands it the role of storage unit for solar energy generated by home-fitted photovoltaic systems. And customers can also hook their car up to the energy market via the Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) application and earn some money in the process.

The selection of standard-fitted and optional charging accessories has been significantly expanded. For flexible charging during a journey, customers can make use of the new Multifunction Charger, which comes with several adapters for charging and discharging the high-voltage battery. The new BMW Wallbox Professional (DC) enables bidirectional charging at home or work. And BMW Charging offers the option of cost-optimised /solar-power-optimised home charging.

In order to give owners the best possible charging experience, the new BMW iX3 will be fitted as standard with an NACS (North American Charging Standard) compatible charging port. This will provide iX3 owners access to the vast Supercharger network, while a standard CCS (Combined Charging System) adapter will preserve access to other providers from coast to coast, thus ensuring that iX3 owners are never far from a provider no matter where the journey is taking them.

Heart of Joy: The Ultimate Driving Machine reaches a new level.
One of four superbrains in the electronics architecture of the Neue Klasse, the Heart of Joy looks after drivetrain and driving dynamics management. This high-performance control unit is responsible for the drivetrain, brakes, energy recuperation, and steering functions, and processes information up to ten times faster than conventional control units. In this way, the potential of electric mobility in terms of instantaneous power delivery, smooth power transfer, agility, stability, and efficiency is fully realized.

Together with the BMW Dynamic Performance Control software stack developed fully in-house, the Heart of Joy calculates all the driving dynamics parameters with a new level of speed and precision. The driver and passengers in the new BMW iX3 experience a uniquely harmonious and BMW-typical driving sensation whatever the situation. Every movement of the accelerator, brake pedal, and steering is executed directly and with assurance and precision. Supreme traction and – thanks to the unique Soft Stop function – the smoothest stopping process ever achieved by a BMW are among its other attributes. In addition, the efficiency of the new BMW iX3 is optimized by the integrated management of drivetrain, braking system, and energy recuperation. In everyday driving, 98% of braking maneuvers are carried out using recuperation only, without application of the friction brakes. The only occasions these are called upon are under emergency braking and during extremely sporty driving.

“Superbrain of automated driving” for the driver assistance systems with of the next technology generation.
Another high-performance computer brings together all the automated driving and parking functions in the BMW iX3. With 20 times greater processing power than in the previous vehicle generation, the watercooled “superbrain of automated driving” enables a significant technological advance with the Neue Klasse in this area as well.

BMW Symbiotic Drive provides seamless support.
The BMW iX3 uses its Symbiotic Drive capability combined with driver assistance to create a completely new driving experience. Whenever the driver wants to accelerate, brake or steer, their inputs merge seamlessly and intuitively with AI-enabled software.The result is a whole new form of Sheer Driving Pleasure. For example, the automatic cruise control system is not deactivated with only a light press of the brake pedal; instead, it is only switched off when the driver brakes harder. In the same way, the lane control assistance remains active even after light steering inputs by the driver.

With the optional BMW Highway / Motorway Assistant ^[4], drivers can take their hands off the steering wheel permanently at speeds of up to 85 mph / 130 km/h, while remaining attentive and ready to intervene. The system assists with vehicle guidance within the lane and can also perform automated lane changes when needed – a simple glance confirmation by the driver is sufficient. With active BMW Maps route guidance, the system proactively suggests lane changes at highway interchanges and exits, which can be confirmed with a quick glance in the wing mirror. The Highway Assistant remains active while passing through interchanges and until the end of highway exits. This allows BMW iX3 drivers to enjoy Level 2 driver assistance without touching the steering wheel in even more situations.

The new Highway and City Assistant ^[4] also offers innovative functions for urban environments, such as stopping and automatically restarting at traffic lights. Additional driver assistance features for complex urban driving situations will be rolled out later via over-the-air software updates.

Munich. The new BMW iX3 and its trailblazing innovations will be shown at the CES 2026. Having won multiple innovation- and car-of-the-year awards* even before hitting the streets, the first vehicle of BMW’s Neue Klasse is set to impress the visitors of the most influential technology trade show.

At the BMW booth in the Silver Lot in front of the South Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center, visitors can experience the BMW Panoramic iDrive with the new AI-powered BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant in the BMW iX3. Through its collaboration with Amazon, BMW becomes the first automaker to integrate Alexa+ technology into its vehicles—a major step forward for in-vehicle conversational AI. With natural dialogue and intelligent capabilities, the system moves beyond simple voice commands to deliver a context-aware, personalized experience that helps drivers stay focused on the road. This new level of voice interaction can also be experienced at Amazon’s Devices & Services Exhibit in the Venetian Hotel, Ballrooms G-J.

The new BMW iX3 represents a leap forward in development that extends well beyond the reaches of a conventional model renewal. The advances made in terms of design and technology create the impression that a complete vehicle generation has been skipped. For the BMW Group, the launch of the new BMW iX3 also represents a milestone in the transformation process when it comes to electrification, digitalization and circularity. Spearheading the arrival of the Neue Klasse, it offers customers the latest design and technological innovations, which will shape the brand’s entire model range moving forwards. Debrecen. With an impressive ceremony that artistically combined Hungarian culture and modern automotive production, Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, today officially opened the BMW Group plant in Debrecen. The BMW Group’s newest and most innovative production site marks the beginning of a new era for the company. In late October, the new BMW iX3 will enter series production in the Hungarian university town of Debrecen as the first vehicle of the Neue Klasse. Plant Debrecen was planned virtually and realised in practice fully in line with the principles of the BMW iFACTORY, becoming the first BMW Group car plant to rely entirely on electricity from renewable energy during normal operation.

In addition to Oliver Zipse, high-ranking representatives from Hungarian politics, such as Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and the Mayor of Debrecen, László Papp, as well as Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management for Production, Ilka Horstmeier, Member of the Board of Management for Human Resources and Real Estate, and Hans-Peter Kemser, President and CEO BMW Manufacturing Hungary Kft., attended the grand opening.

“In our global production network, our new plant in Debrecen is a pioneer: It is our first fully-electric plant, the first production site to operate entirely without fossil fuels – and the first to build vehicles for the Neue Klasse. This makes our plant in Debrecen a decisive factor in the BMW Group's future success,” said Oliver Zipse. “The opening also sends a strong signal: We are expanding our footprint on our home continent and reaffirming our commitment to Europe as a strong and competitive location for industry.”

Hans-Peter Kemser added at the ceremony: “This is not only a new BMW Group plant – it is a cornerstone of progress. We are a partner to culture, to education and to the University of Debrecen, where together we foster the talents that will shape the future. And above all, it is a community – deeply embedded in the life of Debrecen and Hungary.”

Strengthening the industrial base and expanding training

The official opening ceremony began with a look back at the plant’s construction, following a 2018 decision that launched one of Hungary’s largest greenfield investments. The BMW Group’s first Central European location has firmly placed Debrecen on the region's automotive map, creating more than 2,000 direct jobs – and many more along the supply chain, at regional suppliers and service providers that have recently established themselves in Debrecen, alongside national and international companies. The new plant has also strengthened the industrial park and driven additional investment in transport and infrastructure.

At the same time, through collaborations with institutions such as the local university and the Vocational Training Centre of Debrecen, DSZC, Plant Debrecen has also become one of the largest training hubs for dual education programmes in Hungary.

Only the best of the best for Debrecen

Plant Debrecen is the first BMW Group production site not tied to a specific primary plant. Instead, it serves as a network plant, combining best practices from different locations worldwide. For example, the press shop is modelled on the systems used in Spartanburg (USA) and Swindon (Great Britain), with their know-how and technologies further refined for Debrecen. In the body shop, the positioning of nearly 1,000 industrial robots, along with their processes, was digitally simulated in detail beforehand. The number of joining methods was also significantly reduced, with further streamlining allowing design features for the Neue Klasse to be integrated early in development.

Paint shop key to largest reduction in CO₂e emissions

At BMW Group Plant Debrecen, the paint shop plays a critical role in significantly reducing the BMW iX3’s CO₂e footprint. Production of the new BMW iX3 will generate a total of about 80kg CO₂e (scope 1/2 emissions). This figure covers CO₂e emissions from Plant Debrecen, as well as in-house parts production at other BMW Group facilities, including components manufactured in Landshut, for example. This represents a reduction of approx. two-thirds compared to production of existing BMW derivatives. For Plant Debrecen alone, this approach will reduce CO₂e emissions from the manufacture of a vehicle, including its high-voltage battery, by around 90% – to about 34 kg CO₂e (when operating at full capacity, compared with other BMW Group facilities).

About a quarter of the plant's annual power needs will be supplied by the 50‑hectare on-site photovoltaic system, one of the largest in Hungary. Surplus solar energy, such as that generated on non-working days, is stored in a 1,800 m³ thermal storage system with a capacity of 130 MWh.

Digitalised assembly processes and smart “finger structure”

Complete digitalisation of production processes further boosts assembly efficiency – for example, sensors and camera systems along the production line are used to automate quality processes. AI evaluates the data and provides real-time feedback to employees on the assembly line. The building's “finger structure” – an optimised version of BMW Group Plant Leipzig – allows 80% of parts to be delivered directly to the correct point of assembly on the line. In-house logistics are fully electric.

High-voltage battery assembly in line with “local for local” principle

High-voltage batteries are assembled directly on site, allowing for short distances in line with the “local for local” principle. Plant Debrecen will be the first of five plants worldwide to begin series production of Gen6 high-voltage batteries at this location. Seamless in-line quality inspections and 100% end‑of‑line monitoring enable a consistent zero-defect approach.

The opening ceremony concluded with a music and dance performance celebrating Hungarian culture and traditions, which the BMW Group also supports through local events and organisations. To wrap up, numerous employees joined Viktor Orbán and Oliver Zipse on stage, alongside two new BMW iX3s.

Debrecen. The BMW Group has entered the final phase before the first Neue Klasse model rolls off the assembly line. Series production of the new BMW iX3 will get underway in late October at the BMW Group plant in Debrecen, Hungary, as the newest, most innovative manufacturing facility in the company’s global production network officially begins work.

“The start of series production for the BMW iX3 signals a new era of automotive manufacturing. Our new plant in Debrecen has been designed and built fully in line with our strategic vision of the iFACTORY. Digital from the very beginning, the plant will offer a new dimension in efficient production without fossil fuels,” says Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production.

The BMW iFACTORY represents a strategic vision of production, built on streamlined, efficient structures, responsible resource management, economical use of cutting-edge digital innovations and a strong focus on employees. The BMW Group has also registered new patents for a large number of innovative systems and processes at Plant Debrecen.

“We have taken on the challenge of building a completely new vehicle as the first job at an entirely new plant – and doing so in the leanest, most efficient way possible. We have simplified processes, reduced complexity, digitally validated each individual operation and systematically leveraged expertise across our global network. The result is this plant, with its efficient production, innovative processes and the flexibility to integrate additional models,” says Hans-Peter Kemser, head of BMW Group Plant Debrecen.

As with any new model, capacity for the new BMW iX3 will be gradually ramped up in stages after the start of production. Spearheading the arrival of the Neue Klasse, the iX3 showcases the latest design and technology innovations that will define the brand's entire model range in the future. Between now and 2027, the technologies in the Neue Klasse will be integrated into 40 new models and model updates.

From virtual factory to reality

The guiding principles of the BMW iFACTORY have been fully implemented in the technologies employed at the new BMW Group plant in Debrecen. For example, Plant Debrecen was planned and built digitally from the outset, and celebrated its virtual start of production back in March 2023 in the BMW Group’s Virtual Factory. This approach allowed every operation to be tested virtually in advance, enabling production lines to be installed in the buildings exactly as in the digital twin.

Optimal processes for all plant technologies

With an optimised value stream and efficient systems, the press shop guarantees a high level of productivity. The BMW Group continues to follow its proven strategy of using the same tools and presses throughout its global network. This optimises capacity utilisation within the network by allowing press tools to be deployed at multiple locations and enabling staff to be trained in-network.

The body shop, in particular, benefits from prior digital planning and validation. Every process detail was digitally simulated in advance to determine the ideal value stream and ensure that each of the nearly 1,000 robots was optimally positioned. From the outset, close collaboration between development and production teams led to high production efficiency and maximum customer benefit. For example, the number of joining methods was significantly reduced, lowering overall complexity. Design features integrated early in development are also evident in the details of the Neue Klasse, such as the invisible door seal. This creates a visual connection between the window and the door, resulting in a unique look. In addition, maximising the space available for the battery in the body structure – and thus the size and performance of the battery – directly benefits the customer.

Paint shops typically rely on gas to reach the high temperatures (up to 180 degrees Celsius) required. Plant Debrecen will be the BMW Group's first car plant supplied exclusively with electricity from renewable energy sources during normal operation, i.e. without using fossil fuels such as oil or gas. Because of its high energy demands, the paint shop is the most important factor in significantly lowering Plant Debrecen’s CO₂e emissions. In the paint shop alone, using electricity from renewable sources reduces annual CO₂e emissions by up to 12,000 tonnes. About a quarter of the plant's annual power needs will be supplied by the 50‑hectare on-site photovoltaic system. Surplus solar energy, such as that generated on non‑working days, is stored in a 1,800 m³ thermal storage system with a capacity of 130 MWh.

The paint shop also uses an energy recovery system. A heat grid was successfully implemented in the design of the new paint shop, delivering additional energy savings of up to 10%. This innovative concept combines multiple measures for efficient energy recovery from the compressed air supply, drying ovens and cooling systems. The recovered waste heat is then used to preheat the water circuit.

In addition, a thermal storage system – holding 1,800 m³ of water, with a capacity of 130 MWh – stores surplus energy from the photovoltaic system during off-peak periods and supplies it as heat during peak demand.

Full digitalisation of production processes further boosts assembly efficiency. The AIQX (Artificial Intelligence Quality Next) IT platform developed in-house at the BMW Group is a key component of the BMW iFACTORY. AIQX uses sensors and camera systems along the production line to automate quality processes. AI evaluates the data and provides real-time feedback to employees on the line. Looking ahead, vehicles on the line will also become active, connected participants in the industrial IoT (Internet of Things) ecosystem. They will conduct self-analysis, interact with plant employees in real time and automatically share and document relevant messages, using tools such as on-board cameras and IT systems. The equipment, tools, components and every BMW in the assembly halls are already digitally connected to the BMW production system.

The building's “finger structure” – an optimised version of the design employed at BMW Group Plant Leipzig – allows 80% of parts to be delivered directly to the correct point of assembly on the line. All-electric in-house logistics also benefit from autonomous tugger trains, which transport high-voltage batteries directly from production to installation points, as well as Smart Transport Robots that autonomously deliver smaller components to the assembly line. By linking all internal and external databases, the entire logistics process achieves unprecedented digital depth, automating many previously manual, interconnected analysis tasks. Well-structured information is therefore available at any time and can be analysed instantly “at the push of a button”.

The BMW Group has created highly intelligent production processes for its new high-voltage batteries developed in-house. Plant Debrecen will be the first of five plants worldwide to begin series production of Gen6 high-voltage batteries. The production processes were initially developed and tested at pilot plants. Artificial intelligence, data analytics and constant knowledge sharing within the production network also play a key role in the ramp-up of production. Digital twins of production and comprehensive AI databases ensure optimisation of processes and employee training. A consistent zero-defect approach enables seamless in-line quality inspections and 100% end‑of-line monitoring. In line keeping with the “local for local” principle, high‑voltage battery assembly takes place directly on site, allowing the production teams to take advantage of infrastructure efficiencies and short distances.

Plant Debrecen benefits from expertise at all production sites worldwide

BMW Group Plant Debrecen is the first production site in the company's network not tied to a specific primary plant. Instead, it serves as a network plant, combining best practices from various locations worldwide. A major advantage of this approach is that the plant’s current workforce of more than 2,000 employees can be trained within the network, allowing employee know-how from different locations, such as China, South Africa, Mexico, the US and, of course, Germany, to be shared. At the same time, employees throughout the global network gain the opportunity to share their technology insights in Debrecen and bring expertise in production of the Neue Klasse models back to their own location – creating a win-win situation for all the plants.

The focal point of the campaign is a brand film, which, following the premiere of the BMW iX3 at the IAA Mobility 2025 (9 to 14 September 2025), will be used in all global markets – on TV as well as the brand’s digital channels.

The film recalls the unique history of BMW using legendary models such as the BMW 1800, the BMW M1, the BMW 3 Series, the BMW X5 and the electrified BMW i8. These vehicles are literally “coming home” to the BMW Headquarters so they can witness the birth of the new BMW iX3. As a new milestone, this vehicle provides a bridge between a past steeped in tradition and an electric, digital and sustainable future. The film was produced by Tempomedia.

It is accompanied by ten product short films, one product launch film, and content optimised for social media. Illustrating the hallmark BMW driving enjoyment for the digital age, these can be deployed globally.

With its new BMW iX3, BMW also puts the focus on key Neue Klasse innovations, such as the new BMW Panoramic iDrive, the high-performance control unit known as the “Heart of Joy” and the new, consciously minimalist design language. The BMW iX3 has an all-electric range of up to 805 kilometres (BMW iX3 50 xDrive WLTP combined (EnVKV): energy consumption 17.9 – 15.1 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km; CO₂ class A; range 678 – 805 km)*, which underlines how BMW combines progress and driving pleasure.

Munich/Miramas. The development of the first Neue Klasse series production model is on the finishing straight: prototypes of the next-generation BMW iX3 are currently undergoing extensive testing in Miramas, southern France. The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) will celebrate its world premiere at the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich in September and roll off the production line at the new BMW Group plant in Debrecen (Hungary) starting at the end of the year. “Longer range, faster charging, an all-new display and operating concept, and the intelligence of four superbrains are the distinguishing features of the Neue Klasse. With the upcoming BMW iX3 – the first model of the new car generation – we are introducing fundamental technology upgrades with the clear aim of raising the typical BMW driving pleasure to a whole new level,” says Mike Reichelt, Head of Neue Klasse BMW. “With the all-new BMW iX3, we bring our revolutionary technologyies into series production for the first time, and we can hardly wait to see it in action on the road. The new technologies at a glance:

• The revolutionary display and operating concept BMW Panoramic iDrive provides perfect driver orientation and sets yet another new benchmark.
• Charge faster, drive further: the all-electric 6th generation powertrain (Gen6) sets standards in performance and efficiency. The new BMW iX3 50 xDrive has an electric range of up to 800km (WLTP)*(CLTC: 900km* / EPA 400 mls*) and can be charged to provide a range of more than 350km maximum in just 10 minutes*.
• The Heart of Joy control computer and the BMW Dynamic Performance Control software stack raise the dynamic potential of electric powertrains to a new level.

BMW Panoramic iDrive: “Hands on the Wheel, Eyes on the Road”.

The BMW Panoramic iDrive shows all relevant driving information in the driver’s ideal line of sight and maximizes ergonomic efficiency and safety. Four elements come together to make a unique user experience:

• BMW Panoramic Vision: information is projected onto a black printed surface in the windscreen from A-pillar to A-pillar.
• 3D Head-Up Display: the optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display projects information for navigation and automated driving into the driver’s direct field of vision above the BMW Panoramic Vision Display.
• Central Display with matrix backlight technology: the free-cut-design display is in an ergonomically ideal position near the steering wheel.
• Shy-tech multifunction steering wheel: buttons are illuminated when functions are available; relief-like structure and active haptic feedback enable intuitive operation without the driver having to take his or her eyes off the road.

The BMW Panoramic iDrive runs under the BMW Operating System X, also a new development. It offers extensive customizability, intelligent support for the driver and extensive software updates. BMW’s motto “Hands on the Wheel, Eyes on the Road” is redefined with a well-balanced mix of physical controls and digital functions. BMW Panoramic iDrive will ensure user-friendly and intuitive operation in every vehicle segment and with every powertrain concept.

Next generation of electric powertrains. The high-voltage battery concept for the 6th generation of BMW eDrive technology (Gen6) is fundamentally new, and together with the revised electric drive system portfolio, offers an optimum solution for all vehicle segments. The Gen6 system will be making its debut in the BMW iX3 and will then be rolled out across all vehicle segments.
The centerpiece of the high-voltage battery – the BMW cylindrical battery cell – has an energy density of 20 per cent greater that the prismatic cells previously used. The cells are integrated directly into the high-voltage battery, which plays an important role in the body structure of Neue Klasse models.

Charge faster, drive further.
The Gen6 introduces a major leap forward for our customers and the BMW iX3 is the first to benefit. With 400kW maximum charging, our customers can add over 350km* maximum (WLTP) to their vehicle’s range in just 10 minutes. Gen6 technology allows users to monitor the charging performance and curve live via the My BMW App. 800V technology is paving the way for rapid charging. Charging at 400V DC charging stations will, of course, still be possible.
The high energy content of the high-voltage battery, together with the efficient design of the powertrain and the overall vehicle, enables a range of up to 800km (WLTP). 

Further charging-related innovations.
Making the charging process even more user friendly is the intelligent charging flap, which detects when the driver is intending to stop to charge the car and opens (and then closes) automatically. One of the triggers for opening the flap is AI-assisted: if the customer approaches a familiar or learned charging point, the progress towards it reveals an intention to charge and the flap opens.

The SoP of the new BMW iX3 will also introduce extensive bidirectional charging functions – to-Load, to-Home and to-Grid:
Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) turns the vehicle into a powerful mobile powerbank (up to 3.7kW in Europe) and supplies energy for one or several consumers, wherever customers need it. Bidirectional charging capability turns the BMW iX3 into an at-home energy storage unit. Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) helps customers to reduce costs. Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) sets new standards for the integration of the vehicle into the energy market. Both functions contribute to lowering emissions and increasing the use of regenerative energy sources. In this way, the BMW Group demonstrates that it is part of the solution as we work towards energy transformation.

Providing the key to bidirectional charging alongside the technology involved, the new BMW Wallbox (DC) offers 19.2kW charging and discharging depending on the market. The BMW charging equipment has been redesigned and is now easier to use, and now also includes selected adapters e.g. for vehicle-to-load (V2L) use cases.

The BMW driving experience with the Heart of Joy. The level in sheer driving pleasure.
The "superbrain" Heart of Joy in the Neue Klasse raises driving dynamics to a new level. Together with the BMW Dynamic Performance Control software stack, the Heart of Joy is pivotal to powertrain, brakes, recuperation and sub-functions of the steering system. It processes information ten times faster* than previous systems and therefore responds more directly than ever to the driver’s command.

Fewer control inputs are required, directional stability is more precise and stable. As a result, the vehicle develops consistent and reproducible cornering characteristics and can be steered intuitively.

Powertrain and braking functions also work together harmoniously to decelerate the vehicle. Recuperation can be used across the whole speed range down to a standstill. Indeed, in 98 percent of cases, the vehicle can be brought to a standstill without applying the friction brakes – without noise or jolts.

The Heart of Joy and BMW Dynamic Performance Control raise the BMW driving experience to a new level – from standstill to dynamic limits.

Further development of driver assistance systems using the intelligent high-performance computer “Superbrain of Automated Driving”
BMW Group’s latest driver assistance systems are among the world’s best. The new BMW iX3 ushers in the rollout of the next technology generation. This is in keeping with BMW’s ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) philosophy: “Always smart, symbiotic, and safe”.

The BMW Group merges the proven, rule-based assistance system with a new system based on AI. In an optimum symbiosis, this combination supports the driver even more precisely and reliably in challenging situations on the road. The Superbrain of Automated Driving pools all customer functions for automated driving and has a 20 times faster processing speed than the previous system. The new automated driving and parking functions are based on cutting-edge sensor, software, processor, and mobile communications technology.

The basic model of the BMW iX3 offers functions like lane change warning, road priority warning, safe exit, and assisted view. Safe exit uses side-mounted radars to monitor traffic next to the car while stopping and warns the driver of approaching objects. The new Assisted View shows the latest driving situation precisely and in detail alternatively in the Central Display, the Panoramic Vision, or 3D Head-Up Display. The motorway assistant with automatic lane change will be available with extended features in the BMW iX3. Upon request, it can assist drivers from when they join a motorway to when they leave it and allow drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel for long periods. This assistant remains active even during automated motorway changes along an active navigation route. The new Motorway & City Assistant helps the driver in complex driving situations in urban areas, e.g. through tight corners or roundabouts. It brakes automatically at red traffic lights and moves off again or sounds an audible signal when lights turn green.

Symbiotic driver assistance, as it is known, enables perfect interaction between tech and driver regarding both comfort and safety functions, and creates a seamless transition between cooperative steering and – a world first – cooperative braking.

When the function is active, the driver can influence the system at any time without causing the assistant to be switched off by turning the steering wheel or applying brakes just a little in order to adjust the responses of the system.

The parking functions can be activated intuitively and offer an AI-based selection of parking assistance services, parking space recognition, maneuver planning, and an improved parking experience. Extended monitoring functions help the driver to avoid damage to the vehicle while parking the car.

Neue Klasse innovations are AI-based, smart and update-compatible. Thanks to the all-new electronics and software architecture with four superbrains (high-performance computers), the new BMW iX3 is now noticeably more intelligent in everyday situations – e.g. with the advanced driver assistance systems and improved voice assistant BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Due to the powerful BMW Cloud, the new electronics and software architecture of the new vehicle generation is ready for numerous smart features, which customers can benefit from via over-the-air updates after the market launch.

A large number of the patent applications filed by BMW in recent years have come about as part of the development of technologies for the Neue Klasse – e.g. in the projection technology for the BMW Panoramic Vision, in the innovative control functions of the Heart of Joy, in the battery management and cell contacting system of the high-voltage battery, in the new electric motor, and in the new, zonal vehicle electrical system.

Debrecen. The future BMW Group plant in the Hungarian city of Debrecen is on the finish straight as the ramp-up of the assembly line sees the heart of the plant come to life. This is the beating heart of all the technologies in the plant, and also where the most employees work. The assembly launch thus marks the reaching of another milestone.

“Our highly efficient and ergonomic assembly line immediately started running without any issues,” said Hans-Peter Kemser, Managing Director BMW Group Plant Debrecen. “We achieved this thanks to virtual planning and tests, as well as the outstanding collaboration between our new, highly motivated employees in Debrecen and our experts within the BMW Group’s global production network.”

In assembly, the individual components and systems are installed in the painted body – at the end of the process, a car ready to drive rolls off the production line. The innovative vehicle architecture of the Neue Klasse opens totally new possibilities with regard to assembly: greater efficiency thanks to modularisation, fewer different connecting elements, and a simplified installation of the wiring harness. An innovative cockpit assembly also accelerates the process.

The BMW Group Plant Debrecen is already producing test vehicles for the first model of the Neue Klasse: the new BMW iX3.* Thus, the new plant is gradually ramping up for series production.

Neue Klasse allows simple, fast assembly process

A number of features of the Neue Klasse are new territory for everyone. Unlike in previous models, the cable harness is divided into multiple parts, making it easier and more ergonomic to install. The zonal wiring harness architecture requires 600 fewer metres of wiring and weighs 30 percent less than the previous generation.

On the other hand, some components are modularised when one module is formed from many small individual parts. The variation of connecting elements has also been radically reduced for the Neue Klasse. This in turn reduces the number of different plugs, screws and clips. All of this makes assembly significantly more simple. 

Furthermore, with the Neue Klasse, a wide range of quality checks can be performed digitally whilst still on the production line. This procedure will also be implemented at other sites after its initial use in Debrecen. The next point of use will be the home plant in Munich, which will produce the sedan model of the Neue Klasse as of 2026.

The innovative cockpit assembly accelerates processes at Plant Debrecen. It is one of the most compact in the BMW Group’s production network, yet still allows full flexibility and variety. As at Plant Lydia in China, cockpit pre-assembly is located right next to the main line. Once the cockpit has been pre-assembled, it is then installed directly in the vehicle just a few metres ahead.

Assembly in Debrecen adopts innovations from existing plants

When planning the new production site in Hungary, the BMW Group used a completely virtual design process. In line with the principles of the BMW iFACTORY, the tried-and-tested standards and high-tech solutions from existing plants were referred to many times. For example, many ideas and proven structures from Plant Lydia in China and Plant Leipzig can be found in the assembly in Debrecen.

Further development of the finger structure from Leipzig

These structures include the so-called finger structure, or comb structure, which the BMW Group developed specifically for Plant Leipzig, which opened in 2005. This structure allows supply parts and preassembled modules to be transported directly to the assembly lines. A record proportion of parts, up to 80%, can be delivered directly in Debrecen, as the fingers will enjoy logistics supply from both sides for the first time. This is the highest ratio in the BMW Group’s production network. The finger structure allows subsequent extension and the integration of further assembly steps – flexibility is a characteristic of production at the BMW Group.

Production processes, as at Plant Lydia in China

Plant Lydia in China was also an inspiration for many structures and processes in the assembly. The plant opened in 2022 and was the first BMW Group site to be completely planned and simulated in the virtual world from the outset. The shop floor for the assembly line and complete conveyor system in Debrecen are set up identically. Therefore, the technology was available quickly and had already been tried and tested, simplifying the commissioning of a completely new production line.

Series production of the new BMW iX3 set to start at the BMW Group Plant Debrecen in late 2025. The Hungarian plant has been designed specifically for the production of all-electric vehicles. As with the start of any new model or new plant, production capacities are increased gradually after start of production. The site in Debrecen will be the first automobile plant in the BMW Group to operate entirely without the use of fossil fuels.

*Since this is a pre-production model, consumption data for the new BMW iX3 is not available at this time.

Munich. Electric mobility by BMW i is conquering the third dimension. Within the framework of the #NEXTGen 2020, the BMW Group will present the first electric drive system for a wingsuit with which the centuries-old dream of flying can be realised in a completely novel way. The innovative drive module and the likewise entirely newly designed wingsuit were developed in a cooperation between BMW i, Designworks and the professional wingsuit pilot Peter Salzmann from Austria. His maiden flight with the Electrified Wingsuit by BMW i was visually captured in an elaborately staged video documentation. The spectacular film, which will be seen for the first time in the run-up to the #NEXTGen 2020, shows impressively how BMW eDrive technology is able to make a lasting change to the individual mobility experience – not only on the road. 

At the #NEXTGen 2020, the BMW Group will be showing in a variety of ways how the company is pressing ahead with the change in the global automotive sector. Initiatives and commitments will be presented, in which a close exchange with pacesetters from other sectors lead to new perspectives. In addition, the BMW Group will present the latest new products as well as innovative technological developments and vehicle concepts for the future of individual mobility.

The main focus is on the technological field of electric mobility, in which the BMW Group with its development and production know-how and the largest choice of electrically powered drive systems is one of the world’s leading suppliers. Since the market launch of the all-electric BMW i3 (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) in 2013, the components comprising electric motor, power electronics, charging technology and high-voltage batteries have undergone continued further development. The new BMW iX3 (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 17.8 – 17.5 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km), features the meanwhile fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology, which is characterised by optimised energy efficiency and power density as well as an exceptionally compact design.

Compact drive system, optimised design, unique flying experience.

The long-term experience and the BMW i brand’s pooled development competence have now been utilised in a completely innovative way. The result is an extremely powerful, compact and light drive and energy storage package for a unique flying experience with the Electrified Wingsuit by BMW i. The fly unit of the Electrified Wingsuit by BMW i comprises two encased carbon propellers, so-called impellers, each delivering a power output of 7.5 kW, a speed of around 25,000 rpm and a total output of 15 kW, which is available for approximately 5 minutes. The design of the drive unit and the likewise exclusively developed wingsuit is the result of a cooperation between Peter Salzmann and the creative team from Designworks. The BMW Group subsidiary has strongly influenced the BMW i brand’s design from the outset, applying its creative capabilities not only in the automotive sector, but also on behalf of numerous international clients from other branches of industry.

Around 3 years passed from the idea of a wingsuit flight with electric extra boost to the premiere in the Austrian alps. During this time the air sports pioneer Peter Salzmann and his partners at BMW i and Designworks worked jointly on the details of the suit and the drive system. The electric twin-propeller drive system including an energy storage unit were perfectly integrated into the front of the wing suit. The tests in the wind tunnel at the BMW Group Aerodynamics Testing Centre in Munich were a significant part of the development programme for the project.

The project Electrified Wingsuit by BMW i was triggered by Peter Salzmann’s aspiration to raise wingsuit sport to a new level. The 33-year-old Austrian is a skydiving instructor and has meanwhile also made base jumping and skydiving his profession. In addition to skydiving training and wingsuit flying, his repertoire includes film stunts and show appearances.  When jumping from cliffs or out of an aircraft, Salzmann uses the textile layer stretched between the arms and legs of his wingsuit as a paraglider that allows him to generate a horizontal flight movement from the fall velocity and the airflow. With each metre of descent, up to three metres of horizontal flight can be achieved. Wingsuit skydivers can reach speeds of more than 100 km/h.

The aim of the electric drive system is to increase the performance of the wingsuit in order to achieve a better constant glide flight, thus allowing longer distances to be covered. Upon activation, Salzmann explains, the pilot experiences immediate acceleration, allowing them to fly at speeds of more than 300 km/h. For the maiden flight with the Electrified Wingsuit by BMW i Salzmann was flown by helicopter together with two other wingsuit pilots over the mountain tops of his Austrian homeland. Directly after the jump from an altitude of 3,000 metres, all three flew in formation in the direction of a mountain massif. With the aid of the electric drive Salzmann accelerated faster than his colleagues and was able to fly across the peak in steep flight. After flying a further curve, he met up with the other two pilots who had flown in glide flight around the mountain. The three wingsuit pilots finally opened their parachutes and landed at the agreed destination.

Following the successful premiere, Peter Salzmann and the experts at BMW i and Designworks continued their development work on the world’s first electrically powered wingsuit. The Austrian is firmly convinced that electric drive technology will shape the future, not only on the road but also in the air. To him, the project Electrified Wingsuit by BMW i demonstrates perfectly which previously undreamt-of possibilities can become reality with the help of electric mobility.

Hello everyone! A very warm welcome to the world premiere of the BMW iX3.

At BMW, we have always been at the forefront of sustainable mobility. We continue to push forward at a fast pace – always focusing on the needs of our customers.

Already back in 2007, we began a new era of sheer electric driving pleasure with “project i”. And around 180,000 customers of the fully electric BMW i3 are proof of this. Today, with our broad range of plug-in hybrids, customers can enjoy electrified driving in all of our model segments.

Now we are rapidly expanding our line-up of pure electric vehicles: Just think of the very cool MINI Electric – and now our first pure electric Sports Activity Vehicle, the BMW iX3. Next year you can look forward to the BMW i4 and the iNEXT. And I promise you, there will be many more to come.

Our timing is perfect, because customer demand is rising.

And with convenient charging solutions at home or at work, we will boost demand even more.

At BMW, we think well beyond the vehicle itself. For us, it's all about making a true difference. And that's why we have decided to implement a completely new and even more comprehensive strategy for sustainability.

We will focus on three areas:

1. To further strengthen our position as a role model when it comes to sustainable, resource-saving production.
2. Creating a sustainable, CO₂ neutral supply chain.
3. The utilization phase of our vehicles concerning CO₂ emissions. We will further reduce our CO₂ emissions, even beyond the EU target.

All of this shows: We consistently take a sustainable approach across the entire value chain. This is what sets us apart.

Here are a few examples which underline this:

In production, we reduced our CO₂ emissions per vehicle by 25 percent last year, compared to 2018. We are sourcing all of our external power from renewable energy.

And we are working hand in hand with our suppliers to reduce our CO₂ footprint in the supply chain. For example, the production of high-voltage batteries is very energy-intensive. We have signed contracts with all our cell suppliers: They will only use renewable energy to produce our fifth-generation battery cells. This will save around ten million tons of CO₂ within the next ten years. This is roughly the amount of CO₂ that a city like Munich - with almost one and a half million people – emits each year.

We are strongly committed to climate protection. And we put words into action: We have greatly reduced the CO₂ footprint of our vehicle fleet. In 2020 alone, we will cut it by more than twenty percent. We are achieving this by offering a wider range of electric models, and also by increasing the efficiency of our conventional engines.

In Europe we are making excellent progress: Next year, 25 percent of our fleet will be electrified. In 2025, we will reach 33 percent. And in 2030, 50 percent of our sales will be electrified.

Ultimately, it's all about the Power of Choice. Our customers will always be able to choose the right drivetrain for their particular needs.

The BMW X3 clearly embodies our strategy of intelligent and flexible vehicle platforms. We can fit this model with any drivetrain we need – and produce them on the same production line. Whatever our customers demand, we deliver. And I promise you: All variants will have the same high level of functionality, comfort and quality.

Customers can choose from a range of drivetrains, such as highly efficient diesel engines with 48 Volt Mild Hybrid support. This is an important technology for customers who drive long distances. And of course they fulfill the highest regulatory standards of real-driving emissions.

We also offer the X3 with petrol engines in four different performance levels, right up to the sporty X3 M. With the new particle filters and 48 Volt support, they are the cleanest conventional engines we have ever built.

The X3 is also available as a plug-in hybrid, making it a great choice for commuters who desire a very low CO₂ footprint.

Today we are presenting the BMW iX3, our first fully electric Sports Activity Vehicle. It is also our first model to feature our self-developed and self-produced Gen5 electric drivetrain. It is highly integrated, without any rare earth materials, and extremely efficient. The Cobalt and Lithium we use originates from only trusted suppliers.

This car has taken Efficient Dynamics to the next level. When we engineered this vehicle, our focus was on achieving an attractive range. At the same time, we are setting the benchmark in terms of efficiency.

The iX3 offers a range of more than 500 km in the New European Driving Cycle. And 460 km according to WLTP. And of course it drives like a BMW.

We have also included a new App that recommends charging stops on long routes – showing the estimated charging time required. BMW Charging is one of the many digital innovations that we have developed for our customers.

The BMW iX3 features our latest BMW Operating System 7. This enables secure and convenient over-the-air updates. This means your system is always up to date.

• Novi BMW iX3 utira pot tehnologiji BMW eDrive pete generacije. Znaten napredek je bil dosežen v smislu gostote moči, dosega delovanja, mase, prostorske zahteve namestitve in prilagodljivosti. Gostota moči električnega pogonskega sistema se je povečala za 30 odstotkov v primerjavi z obstoječimi popolnoma električnimi vozili BMW Group; gravimetrična energijska gostota (shranjena energija na gram baterije) visokonapetostne baterije na ravni celic se je izboljšala za 20 odstotkov. Najnovejše različice elektromotorja, močnostne elektronike, tehnologije polnjenja in visokonapetostne baterije (vsi sestavni deli so rezultat internega razvoja) bodo od leta 2021 vgrajene tudi v modelih BMW iNEXT in BMW i4.
  
  
• Zaradi visoko integrirane tehnologije pogonskega sistema se je učinkovitost bistveno izboljšala v primerjavi z BMW i3. Elektromotor, močnostna elektronika in menjalnik so prvič razporejeni v sredinsko nameščenem aluminijastem ohišju. Visokonapetostna baterija BMW eDrive pete generacije z najnovejšo tehnologijo baterijskih celic in bruto energijsko vsebnostjo 80 kWh omogoča doseg delovanja do 460 kilometrov v skladu s predpisanim novim preskusnim postopkom WLTP. BMW Group stalno spremlja upoštevanje skladnosti z okoljskimi in socialnimi standardi v postopku oddaje javnih naročil za litij in kobalt, ki se uporabljata v baterijskih celicah.
  
  
• Na novo zasnovan elektromotor BMW eDrive pete generacije proizvede največjo moč 210 kW/286 KM in 400 Nm največjega navora. Od 0 do 100 km/h pospeši v 6,8 sekunde (za primerjavo ima BMW X3 30i: 6,4 sekunde), njegova največja hitrost (elektronsko omejena) pa je 180 km/h. Princip zasnove sinhronskega motorja z vzbujalnim tokom zagotavlja optimiziran razvoj moči, inženirjem pa omogoča, da se izognejo uporabi redkozemeljskih elementov.
  
  
• Obseg uporabe različnih stopenj rekuperacije omogoča izbiro med zelo očitnim občutkom vožnje z enim pedalom (one-pedal feeling) z obsežno rekuperacijo energije v potisnem pogonu in med zaviranjem v položaju izbirne ročice B ter prilagodljivo rekuperacijo, vključno s funkcijo jadranja v položaju vožnje D. Stopnjo rekuperacije je mogoče prilagajati v treh fazah. Prilagodljiva rekuperacija izboljšuje udobje vožnje in učinkovitost s prilagajanjem regeneracije zavorne energije in funkcije jadranja neposrednim voznim razmeram.
  
  
• Prenos moči na zadnji kolesi prinaša klasično vozno izkušnjo BMW. Edinstvena kombinacija nizke porabe električne energije in visoke zmogljivosti polnjenja omogoča potovanja na dolge razdalje pri velikih povprečnih hitrostih. Prilagodljivo podvozje (standardna oprema) optimizira športno odzivnost in udobje.
  
  
• BMW IconicSounds Electric. Na novo razvita zvokovna sled električno gnanih modelov BMW doživlja svoj prvenec v BMW iX3 in dodaja novo čustveno globino vozni izkušnji. Zmogljiv zvok pogona je na voljo v avtomobilih z izvedbo opreme "Impressive". Nezamenljiva kompozicija ob zagonu in deaktiviranju električnega pogonskega sistema, razvita v sodelovanju s Hansom Zimmerjem.
  
  
• Izdelki in storitve za polnjenje po meri: kartica BMW Charging omogoča preprost in udoben dostop do trenutno več kot 450.000 javnih polnilnih postaj po vsem svetu; novi prilagodljivi hitri polnilnik, ki omogoča uporabo različnih tipov vtičnic, in zasebne stenske polnilne postaje (BMW Wallbox) visoke zmogljivosti so na voljo kot dodatna oprema. Individualne paketne ponudbe zagotavljajo optimalno rešitev polnjenja za vse potrebe strank.
  
  
• Nove digitalne storitve iz BMW Connected Charging* v avtomobilu in prek aplikacije spodbujajo uporabniku prijazno električno mobilnost in izboljšajo načrtovanje navigacije, vključno s priporočili za postanke, da lahko uporabniki napolnijo baterije svojih avtomobilov. Stranke BMW iX3 uživajo posebej ugodne tarife odjema električne energije na hitrih polnilnih postajah IONITY s postavkami, odvisnimi od porabe (npr. 0,29 EUR za kWh v Nemčiji).
  
  
• Značilna sorazmerja modela BMW X se združijo s posebnimi oblikovnimi značilnostmi vozila z električnim pogonom. Inovativna aerodinamična platišča BMW: 19-palčna aluminijasta platišča nove oblike za zmanjšanje zračnega upora so del standardne opreme.
  
  
• Premijski ambient v notranjosti s posebnimi poudarki modela. Uporabniku prijazen potniški prostor s spremenljivimi možnostmi uporabe in visoko stopnjo udobja za pet oseb je odlična rešitev za vsakodnevne vožnje in daljše razdalje; prostornino za nakladanje je s 510 litrov mogoče razširiti na kar 1.560 litrov.
  
  

• Daljnosežna standardna specifikacija (oprema "Inspiring") vključuje kovinsko barvo zunanjosti, LED-žaromete, avtomatsko klimatsko napravo s tripodročnim upravljanjem ter funkcijama predgrevanja in predkondicioniranja, avtomatsko delovanje vrat prtljažnika, panoramsko stekleno streho, Driving Assistant Professional in ambientalno razsvetljavo. Opcijska izvedba opreme "Impressive" prinaša tudi 20-palčna aluminijasta platišča, akustično zasteklitev, športne sedeže, oblazinjenje iz usnja Vernasca, projektor BMW Head-Up, parkirnega asistenta Plus in sistem za prostorski zvok Harman Kardon.

• BMW Live Cockpit Professional z BMW Maps, navigacijskim sistemom v oblaku, in BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant sta na voljo standardno. Integracija pametnih telefonov s predpripravo Apple CarPlay in Android Auto*, Remote Software Upgrade in digitalne storitve iz BMW Connected Charging* so prav tako del standardne ponudbe.

Munich. The BMW iX3, the production of which will commence in 2020, facilitates locally emission-free driving in a novel and efficient form, whilst also being suitable for everyday use. A range of more than 440 km* within the legislative WLTP test cycle will be achieved with a net-battery size of 74 kWh*. The first purely electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) is the trailblazer for BMW eDrive technology of the fifth generation, which, starting 2021, will also be deployed in the BMW i4 and the BMW iNEXT. For this purpose, both the drive system and the high-voltage battery unit featuring pioneering battery cell technology have been completely redeveloped. In the BMW iX3, the related advancement ensures brand-typical driving experience combined with outstanding efficiency and a novel balance of weight and range.

The BMW iX3 is yet a further milestone in the consistent realisation of the BMW Group’s electrification strategy. In 2020 the BMW X3 will become the brand’s first model available both with conventional petrol and diesel engines as well as plug-in hybrid and purely electric drive. With this “power of choice” offer, the globally operating company is taking into account the various different requirements and needs of their worldwide customers worldwide as well as maximum effectiveness in the reduction of CO2 emissions. The BMW iX3 is produced for the world market by the joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive in Shenyang, China.

The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology is the key to future-oriented sustainability for vehicles with electrified drive systems. It is the result of consistent development work within the framework of BMW EfficientDynamics and the experience gained by the BMW Group in the field of electric mobility spanning more than 10 years. All powertrain components used for BMW eDrive technology were developed solely by the BMW Group. Moreover, the electric motor and the high-voltage batteries are produced in corporately owned manufacturing facilities. In this way, the BMW Group ensures it has a decisive influence on the product properties and the quality of each component. Furthermore, the drive unit and the high-voltage battery unit are flexibly scalable in terms of power and energy content and can thus be used in various different vehicle concepts and segments.

EfficientDynamics at its best: New drive component with high efficiency and brand-typical power characteristics.  
In the BMW iX3, EfficientDynamics reaches a new level. The vehicle’s fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology comprises a drive unit in which electric motor, system electronics and transmission are brought together into a central housing. As a result, the required installation space of the drive technology and its weight are considerably reduced. The ratio between motor output and weight of the drive system improves around 30 percent compared to the previous generation.
The electric motor featured in the BMW iX3 delivers a maximum power output of 210 kW/286 hp*. The torque of 400 Nm* allows for high initial acceleration and keeps a high level even at the upper motor speeds because of exclusive BMW design measures.

A further special feature of the electric motor being deployed in the BMW iX3 for the first time is a construction method that eliminates the need for rare earth materials.

The electric motor used in the BMW iX3 transfers power to the rear wheels. This effectuates a further increase in drive system efficiency. Moreover, the range of the BMW iX3 benefits from the drive design conveying the traditional BMW rear-wheel drive experience.

High-voltage batteries with significant higher energy density and responsible use of raw materials.

The high-voltage battery unit of the BMW iX3 is integral part of BMW’s fifth eDrive generation and is based on the latest evolution in NMC-811 technology in BMW typical prismatic design. The BMW Group has outstanding development capabilities in this field. This know-how flows into precise specifications with regard to the use of materials and battery design, according to which the battery cells are produced. Consistent research and development work not only raises energy density but also constantly improves all battery cell characteristics, in particular also durability and safety. In total, the BMW high-voltage battery shows the optimum of what is possible nowadays.
At the same time the BMW engineers were able to reduce the share of cobalt contained in the battery by another two thirds. Compared to former technology used by BMW Group, the gravimetric energy density on cell level in the BMW iX3 is around 20 percent higher.

With the BMW iX3 the raw materials Cobalt and Lithium for the first time are purchased by BMW directly and then handed over to the producer of the battery cells.

In addition, scalability and the compact design of the high-voltage battery unit have been further optimised. The battery cells are grouped into modules at specialised BMW production locations and finally assembled as high-voltage battery packs aligned to each model. The high-voltage battery unit in the BMW iX3 is installed in an extremely flat position in the vehicle floor. Thanks to this arrangement, there is no loss of space for passengers and the luggage compartment compared to the conventionally powered versions of the BMW X3.

Greater range thanks to high efficiency rather than a bigger battery

With a net energy content of 74 kWh*, the high-voltage battery unit installed in the BMW iX3 achieves a range of more than 440 km* in the legislative WLTP test cycle. Within its segment, the BMW iX3 boasts not only a unique low power consumption of less than 20 kWh/100km* accordingly to the WLTP test cycle, but also stands for a novel ratio between battery size and range.
Thanks to the favourable efficiency rating of the drive components and the high energy density of the high-voltage battery unit, the BMW iX3 achieves a range that is only possible for common electric vehicles with larger and thus heavier batteries.

Positive environmental impact secured.
The “real” ecological footprint of electric vehicles is sometimes questioned, particularly in markets still having a low percentage of green electricity in the public power grid. At the BMW Group every electrified model has to proof that for the entire cycle, comprising raw material procurement, supply chain, production and usage phase as well as recycling, its CO2 balance is substantially better than the one of a conventionally powered sibling.  For the BMW iX3 the related advantage is more than 30 percent compared to a BMW X3 sDrive 20d when average European power supply is used during the car’s usage phase. If the vehicle is charged with green electricity the advantage is around 60 percent.

Furthermore, in analogy with the BMW i3 Plug&Play technology, the high-voltage battery featured in the BMW iX3 is planned for a second life as a stationary battery pack for the period following the first long life in the car. This way the already positive CO2 balance of the BMW iX3 can be further improved.
