Munich/Cannes. Now in its 79th year, the Cannes Film Festival is one of the most significant events in the social and cultural calendar. International actors, directors, producers and creative professionals from all over the world are flocking to the Côte d’Azur. Moving beyond the confines of the film industry, the festival has established itself as a showcase for luxury, design and contemporary lifestyle. For BMW, Cannes once again provides the ideal backdrop to present innovations and the latest luxury models to an international audience.

This year’s exclusive BMW shuttle fleet comprises more than 150 vehicles. These include, among others, the fully electric BMW i7 and BMW iX models, as well as the BMW XM plug-in hybrid. One of this year’s highlights is the comprehensively updated BMW 7 Series. The seventh generation of this luxury sedan is the brand’s flagship model and technology showcase. It will be presented to European audiences for the first time in Cannes. The BMW 7 Series plays a pioneering role in introducing Neue Klasse technologies to the existing range of BMW models. It also marks the start of a technology rollout across all powertrain types and vehicle segments from which all future BMW automobiles will benefit.

With the most extensive model update in the history of the BMW Group, the new BMW 7 Series sets new standards – particularly in the areas of design, digitalisation, comfort and electrified powertrain technology. Its monolithic exterior, the new BMW kidney Iconic Glow and the minimalist BMW Individual crystal headlights make for a striking presence. A world first is the BMW Individual Dual-Finish paintwork, which combines matt and metallic paint finishes in the same colour, with no visible transition where the two finishes meet. The interior of the BMW 7 Series combines luxurious materials and modern design with advanced technology. Highlights include the BMW Panoramic iDrive display and operating system introduced with the Neue Klasse, the first BMW Passenger Screen, the upgraded BMW Theatre Screen and an immersive lighting concept.

The new BMW 7 Series also underscores the brand’s equitable drive-type approach. The powertrain range extends from efficient internal combustion engines with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, through plug-in hybrid models, to fully electric variants with an electric range of over 720 kilometres according to WLTP. Sixth-generation BMW eDrive cylindrical cell technology is a key factor in this context.

Advanced assistance systems with BMW Symbiotic Drive and AI integration.
With advanced technologies and an increased use of artificial intelligence, the new BMW 7 Series Sedan sets new standards for comfort and safety in partially automated driving and parking. Innovative SAE Level 2 driver assistance systems and active safety features deliver tangible added value, while BMW Symbiotic Drive optimises the interaction between driver and vehicle.

The European premiere of the new BMW 7 Series will take place during the film festival (12–23 May) right on “La Croisette”, the busiest boulevard in Cannes. The worldwide market launch of the new BMW 7 Series will begin in July 2026.

The BMW 7 Series has demonstrated its qualities as a luxury sedan in numerous movie and TV productions such as “Stranger Things”, “Mission: Impossible” and “Red Sparrow”. These vehicles driven by stars are the focus of an exhibition during the film festival. The cars on display include an E38 BMW 7 Series – the original car from the James Bond film “Tomorrow Never Dies”.

Expansion of the “BMW Art Makers” programme to include film.
At the intersection of art, culture and mobility, BMW is expanding its successful “BMW Art Makers” programme to include film. From 2027, BMW will implement a targeted strategy to promote artistic excellence and support emerging talent in the film industry. The aim is to develop BMW Art Makers into a wide-ranging initiative as part of BMW cultural engagement. It builds on the established arts funding programme that sees BMW France annually supporting a curator-artist duo in the development of a new body of work, which is then presented at the Rencontres d’Arles and Paris Photo festivals. This year’s award winners are Lara Tabet and Yasmine Chemali. In addition to its partnership with the Cannes Film Festival, BMW supports other major industry events such as the Marrakech International Film Festival and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival as part of a cultural commitment spanning more than fifty years and involving hundreds of initiatives worldwide. BMW also supports young filmmakers in Malaysia with its “BMW Shorties” programme, for example.

In Beijing, the new BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase, the new BMW i3 Long Wheelbase, and the new BMW 7 Series featuring Neue Klasse technologies are celebrating their world premieres. “With the introduction of the new BMW iX3 for China, the BMW i3 for China, and the new BMW 7 Series, we are marking an important milestone in the biggest future project in BMW’s history: the Neue Klasse. We are making a major leap – in technology, driving experience, and design,” said Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “With the new BMW 7 Series, we are demonstrating how we are scaling the new technology clusters and the new design language across our entire portfolio. This is a powerful example of how every future model will benefit from the innovations of the Neue Klasse.”

The BMW Group’s presence at Auto China 2026 highlights its technological focus. The company is showcasing numerous forward-looking innovations in Beijing, including a digital experience featuring BMW Panoramic iDrive that is tailored entirely to the needs of customers in China, as well as driver assistance systems developed specifically for the demands of Chinese traffic conditions. The BMW iX3 and BMW i3: world premieres for the first two Neue Klasse models developed specifically for China.

The first Neue Klasse models developed in China for China are celebrating their world premieres at Auto China 2026: the new BMW iX3 and the new BMW i3. Both models embody the leap into a new era and reflect BMW’s ambition to lead innovation in China, the company’s largest single market, particularly in electrification, digitalisation, and software-defined vehicles.

With their distinctive Neue Klasse design language, the BMW iX3 and the new BMW i3 herald a new era in BMW design. Both models combine typical BMW proportions with a pared-back, more technical design language. Key features include a reinterpretation of the iconic BMW kidney grille, integrated light signatures, and forward-oriented lines.

Both the new BMW iX3 and the new BMW i3 are based on the sixth generation of BMW eDrive technology (Gen6). A key feature of Gen6 BMW eDrive technology is the cylindrical cell technology of the high-voltage battery. This enables a range of more than 900 kilometres on a single charge in the new BMW iX3, according to the CLTC cycle. In the new BMW i3, the maximum range, according to the CLTC cycle, exceeds 1,000 kilometres. Thanks to the Neue Klasse’s 800-volt architecture, both models can be charged at a fast-charging station with a peak charging power of 400 kW. According to the CLTC standard, this allows enough energy for up to 400 kilometres of driving to be added in ten minutes.

As the brand’s flagship and image leader, the new BMW 7 Series assumes a pioneering role in introducing Neue Klasse technologies into existing models. This step also marks the beginning of a cross-segment and cross-powertrain technology roll-out that will benefit all future BMW models.

The comprehensively upgraded Level 2 driver assistance systems in the new BMW 7 Series enable hands-free driving on motorways at speeds of up to 130 km/h in many European countries, the United States, and Canada, including automated lane changes following eye confirmation and “Entry-to-Exit” assistance. The City Assistant offers navigation-guided “Address-to-Address” driver assistance through BMW Symbiotic Drive. ^[2] BMW Symbiotic Drive ensures seamless interaction between assistance systems and human driving behaviour. The driver’s intention to accelerate, brake, or steer merges intuitively with AI-supported software. The BMW 7 Series relies on driver assistance technologies that were specifically adapted for the Chinese market.

New “Address-to-Address” driver assistance system specifically for the Chinese market.

Beginning with the BMW iX3, BMW is introducing a new driver assistance system developed specifically for Chinese traffic conditions. By the end of 2027, it will be available in 12 BMW models in China, including the new BMW 7 Series and BMW i3. For more than 20 years, BMW has been a pioneer in the development of driver assistance systems, always placing safety and reliability under complex, real-world conditions at the forefront. For the new generation of intelligent BMW driver assistance in China, BMW combines decades of experience in functional integration and operational safety with the strengths of locally trained end-to-end AI, developed in partnership with the Chinese company Momenta. The result is a unique system for navigation-guided “Address-to-Address” driver assistance. The central computer for automated driving works in harmony with the “Heart of Joy”. In the new iX3 and i3, BMW Soft-Stop technology delivers the smoothest assisted driving experience to date.

Another highlight of these new driver assistance technologies is the unique cooperative braking system. When driver assistance is activated, it allows the driver to influence the system with light braking input without deactivating assistance. This function underlines BMW’s symbiotic philosophy for Level 2 driver assistance systems, including in China. As a result, the driver remains involved in a collaborative interaction between human and artificial intelligence. The entire user experience with BMW Panoramic iDrive is designed to ensure that the driver is always informed about the system’s status and remains intuitively attentive.

A digital leap forward: BMW Panoramic iDrive and the digital user experience for China.

With the start of the Neue Klasse, the display and control concept becomes a key driver of the in-vehicle digital user experience. At its heart is BMW Panoramic iDrive, which will be shown for the first time in China in models with Neue Klasse technologies presented at Auto China 2026. These cutting-edge technologies were adapted to meet local market needs.

It is based on BMW Operating System X. The system is designed to be scalable within the brand: core functions, architecture, and design principles are globally uniform, while content, services, and technologies can be adapted to specific markets and regions.

This scalability allows BMW to tailor digital functions to different usage habits and regulatory frameworks. One example is voice interaction: while BMW relies on Amazon technologies in Europe and the United States, in China, it uses a proprietary solution developed in collaboration with local technology partners such as DeepSeek. This way, BMW integrates different technological approaches within the same system architecture without compromising quality, safety, or user experience.

BMW has comprehensively enhanced the digital system for the Chinese market. This goes beyond localisation, representing a version designed for China. Around 70 per cent of the Chinese version of the BMW Operating System X is developed in local development centres. On-site teams contribute their expertise in Chinese user behaviour, for example, in voice interaction, navigation, personalisation, and the integration of digital ecosystems.

A key factor in this success is close collaboration with leading Chinese technology companies. Together with partners like Alibaba, DeepSeek, Amap, and Huawei, BMW develops digital functions and services that integrate deeply into the Chinese ecosystem. These collaborations support the integration of modern AI technologies, local services, and content into the in-car experience.

Navigation is also deeply integrated into the overall digital experience. In collaboration with Amap, BMW offers high-resolution, lane-accurate navigation in China that precisely visualises complex traffic situations and urban junctions. The content appears consistently across all relevant display levels for safe and intuitive navigation.

Furthermore, BMW Panoramic iDrive opens up new possibilities for personalisation. Configurable content, customisable widgets, and AI-powered functions allow the digital vehicle experience to adapt to different usage scenarios, from daily commuting and family journeys to business trips.

That is why China plays a key role in the BMW Group’s global digital strategy. The combination of scalable system architecture, local development expertise, and close partnerships with Chinese technology companies allows BMW to implement market-specific digital innovations while making them available worldwide.

The BMW iX3 Flow Edition demonstrates the production-ready status of BMW E Ink technology.

The world premiere of the new BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase at Auto China 2026 is accompanied by the BMW iX3 Flow Edition concept car. It offers a striking example of the transition from a static to a dynamic vehicle surface. Its E Ink technology, seamlessly integrated into the bonnet, allows the driver to choose among eight carefully selected animations at the touch of a button. The iconic Chinese buildings resemble modernity and progress. Ranging from subtle to expressive, the design makes innovation visible and conveys the driver’s style and mood in a personalised and context-sensitive way. By integrating this technology into the bonnet of the BMW iX3 Flow Edition, the BMW Group takes E Ink to a new level. Integrated into a large-scale bodywork element for the first time, the concept car demonstrates the technology’s readiness for series production.

Special editions and one-offs highlight the diversity of the MINI brand.

With its diverse vehicle portfolio, MINI underscores its commitment to individual design and a broad range of character at Auto China 2026. This includes several special editions highlighting the brand’s design and heritage, including the MINI Paul Smith Special Edition, as well as various models from the high-performance John Cooper Works sub-brand.

A highlight of the display is the one-off MINI x Vagabund. Based on the MINI Countryman, two unique vehicles were created in collaboration with the Austrian design studio Vagabund. With a bespoke sound system, striking graphic accents, and an expressive colour scheme, the MINI concept cars become a mobile soundstage, embodying a spirit of adventure, community culture, and festival lifestyle. One of the two MINI x Vagabund vehicles will be presented in Beijing.

MINI will also showcase the MINI JCW “The Skeg” at Auto China 2026. The model is the result of a collaboration with Deux ex Machina and combines influences from surf and motorsport culture to highlight the sporty, progressive side of the MINI brand.

A series production preview of BMW’s hydrogen fuel cell technology: the BMW iX5 Hydrogen prototype in ‘Flow Emergence’ design.

Another eye-catcher at the BMW Group’s exhibition stand at Auto China 2026 is the redesigned vehicle from the BMW Hydrogen Pilot Fleet, which has been in global operation since 2023. From 2028, the new BMW iX5 Hydrogen will become the first BMW series-production vehicle powered by a hydrogen fuel cell drive. In doing so, the BMW Group is bringing the benefits of this technology into everyday use: electric driving with long ranges and short refuelling stops.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen from the pilot fleet, presented at Auto China 2026, also draws attention with its design concept developed by Designworks Shanghai. Thematically aligned with BMW’s hydrogen fuel cell technology, the wrap concept, developed under the motto ‘Flow Emergence’, uses water as a metaphor to visualise the generation and transformation of energy in nature. Inspired by water landscapes and Far Eastern watercolour painting, it illustrates the condensation of time and energy. The flowing visual language, with gentle colour gradients, conveys the transition from stillness to movement and the unfolding from within. The design of the pilot fleet vehicle at Auto China 2026 symbolises the continuous transformation of energy for climate-friendly and sustainable mobility in the future.

Innovation and bespoke individuality across 4,400 square metres of exhibition space.

The BMW Group is exhibiting its BMW and MINI brands at Auto China 2026 across a record exhibition space of around 4,400 square metres. This space is almost three times larger than in 2024 and underscores the importance of the Chinese market to the company. The exhibition stand showcases a total of 42 vehicles, including 28 BMW vehicles and 14 MINI vehicles, with three world premieres and 14 vehicles that are individualised, customised, classic cars, or special edition cars. Two BMW motorcycles will also be featured at Auto China 2026.

The BMW Highlight Show, featuring a 300-square-metre LED wall, presents the new BMW iX3 Long Wheelbase and the new BMW 7 Series to visitors throughout the day. Through interactive exhibits, ten ‘Deep Dive’ stations invite visitors to explore the latest technologies and charging solutions, including robotics and bidirectional charging. The extensive BMW Individual range is illustrated through an exhibition of 164 paint samples and 36 leather samples. An immersive audio experience with Dolby Atmos and Bowers & Wilkins creates an exceptional sound environment.

BMW has been setting standards in the development and production of special protection vehicles that combine the driving experience typical of the brand with the highest safety standards for more than four decades. Professional drivers need special knowledge and skills in order to be able to exploit the full potential of these armoured vehicles, which are equipped with special safety-relevant functions, in everyday use. These are taught in the BMW Security Vehicle Training courses. With the current portfolio of special protection vehicles and the intensive training courses for their drivers under the guidance of experienced instructors, BMW has created a comprehensive range of tailor-made security products from a single source.

The training programmes are designed for professional drivers who want to improve their skills in handling special-protection vehicles in order to be optimally prepared for extreme situations. As one of Europe's most renowned test and inspection centres for vehicle safety, the training centre in Groß Dölln near Berlin provides the ideal setting. The former military airfield, where the authorities also train their emergency services, was converted into a state-of-the-art driving centre in 2002 and is now the perfect venue for theory lessons and driving exercises for BMW Security Vehicle Training.

Driving techniques and escape manoeuvres: Driving safely in dangerous situations.

The two-stage BMW Security Vehicle Training course was developed for participants who, as professional drivers, are responsible for the safety of their passengers. The BMW instructors teach the basics of driving physics and driving technique as well as tactical knowledge that will help drivers to act safely and confidently even in extreme situations. Under the guidance of the instructors, they learn to test and improve their driving skills in realistic practice scenarios, even under challenging conditions - such as in escape situations. With a maximum of eight participants per group and two passengers per vehicle, an intensive and personalised learning experience is guaranteed.

The two-day basic training course focuses on basic driving techniques using special protection vehicles. Due to their armouring and the associated additional weight, special protection vehicles have a specific driving behaviour that must be taken into account when handling them. The first day's training includes various driving elements, including emergency braking and evasive manoeuvres, as well as exercises in the dark. The night training programme includes braking and evasive manoeuvres on a slalom course, alternating between high beam, dipped beam and parking lights. To simulate the ability to orientate and react to threat scenarios on an unfamiliar route, the participants are also confronted with explosions on a confusing forest road.

On the second day, in addition to high-speed handling and evasive manoeuvres in bends, the curriculum includes a real threat scenario with a simulated vehicle attack. The J-turn is an effective escape manoeuvre that involves turning the vehicle from reverse to forward without losing speed to escape a dangerous situation in the opposite direction. Other key components of the basic module include anticipatory driving and the ability to maintain a perfect overview even under stress.

Confident handling in authentically simulated extreme situations.

Building on this, the BMW Security Vehicle Training Level 2 completes and deepens the skills acquired in the basic course. The three-day advanced course also covers extreme situations such as escape manoeuvres under fire and driving exercises with vehicle contact.

Pyrotechnic effects, night-time ambushes and crash scenarios with significant bodywork damage also test the mental strength of the training participants. They learn how to control an armoured vehicle under extreme conditions during high-speed pace car laps on the race track. The BMW Security Vehicle Training provides professional drivers with all the skills they need to meet the highest security requirements and offer their passengers optimum protection.

The learning content is also supplemented by off-road training with the BMW X5 Protection VR6 (WLTP combined (preliminary data): Energy consumption 13.4 l/100km; CO2 emissions 305 g/km; CO2 class G). The training participants have to negotiate various inclines with the special protection vehicle, which is around one ton heavier than its base model due to its armouring, and drive at an angle just below the tipping angle. In addition, sand crossings and locking manoeuvres, where only two wheels touch the ground in rough terrain, are practised.

BMW 7 Series Protection and BMW i7 Protection: Integrated protection concept for maximum safety.

Together with the BMW 7 Series Protection (WLTP combined (preliminary data): Energy consumption 14.6 l/100km; CO2 emissions 328 g/km; CO2 class G), the all-electric BMW i7 (WLTP combined (preliminary data): Energy consumption 30.0 kWh/100km; CO2 emissions 0 g/km; CO2 class A) and the BMW X5 Protection VR6, the entire range of current BMW special protection vehicles is available to training participants. The BMW 7 Series Protection and the BMW i7 Protection combine their integrated protection concept with remarkable ride comfort and spaciousness, advanced equipment features and brand’s hallmark driving dynamics.

The globally unique protection concept includes the BMW Protection Core, which was already used in the development of the regular BMW 7 Series. It forms a self-supporting protection cell made of armour-plated steel, which is combined with protected doors, underbody armour and safety glass. The BMW 7 Series Protection and the BMW i7 Protection are classified in resistance class VR9 according to the internationally recognised official test criteria of the Association of Test Centres for Attack-Resistant Materials and Constructions (VPAM). The glass even meets the requirements of the highest resistance class for civilian special protection vehicles, VPAM 10. As an option, the new BMW 7 Series Protection is also available with partial protection in defined areas of the body against VPAM 10 ammunition.

Model-specific suspension technology, which is precisely matched to the weight of the special protection, ensures high agility and superior performance even in dangerous situations. Unique features include integral active steering as standard and 20-inch alloy wheels with PAX tyres, which allow the vehicle to continue driving even in the event of a complete loss of air pressure. Only a few details distinguish the special Protection models from the standard BMW 7 Series with M Sport Package. The BMW 7 Series Protection is powered by a 390 kW/530 hp V8 engine. The BMW i7 Protection is the world's first certified special protection sedan with a all-electric drive. Its two electric motors generate a system output of up to 400 kW/544 hp.

BMW X5 Protection VR6: Discreet, sporty appearance and added safety.

As the most powerful, dynamic and best-selling special protection vehicle of its kind in the world, the BMW X5 Protection VR6 also plays a special role in the brand's model range. Its design is almost indistinguishable from that of the standard model, giving it a discreet appearance with a sporty touch. Its integrated protective equipment was already taken into account during the series development of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). This includes body armour and safety glass, which are specially designed for each model. As a result, the BMW X5 Protection VR6 also meets the requirements of the Association of Test Centres for Attack-Resistant Materials and Constructions (VPAM) with regard to bullet and blast resistance.

The chassis technology of the BMW X5 Protection VR6 is precisely tuned to its high engine output and individual weight balance. It is equipped as standard with the Adaptive M Chassis Professional, which, in addition to the M Sport Differential, includes an integrated active steering system and active roll stabilisation. Its 390 kW/530 hp V8 engine delivers outstanding dynamics, while the standard sport brake system ensures consistently high stopping power, even under intensive use.

Munich. Additions to the line-up of drive systems and the range of optional extras are set to further increase the appeal and diversity of the BMW product range from spring 2024. The BMW i5 Sedan and BMW iX2 fully electric models will each be available from March 2024 with an additional drive system variant. The drive system offerings for the BMW X2 and BMW XM have also been expanded. The innovative Highway Assistant will bring increased comfort levels over longer journeys to more of the brand’s model series. And additional exterior paint finishes will be offered for the BMW 5 Series Sedan, BMW X2 and BMW iX2. Customers will also be able to order the business sedan with new variants of the BMW Individual Merino leather trim.

Attractive new features will also be introduced in spring 2024 in the area of digital services. These include easier use of the voice assistant Siri (as part of the integration of the Apple iPhone into cars specified with BMW Operating System 9), and the optimised display of ratings for charging stations for fully electric and plug-in hybrid BMW models. The steady expansion of the range of functions for the My BMW App also continues.

BMW i5 xDrive40: third fully electric variant of the business sedan.

A third fully electric variant will be added to the new BMW 5 Series Sedan line-up in March 2024. The new BMW i5 xDrive40 Sedan (electric power consumption, combined: 20.0 – 17.2 kWh/100 km in the WLTP cycle) has two highly integrated electric drive units at the front and rear axle which together develop a system output of up to 290 kW/394 hp and peak torque of 590 Nm (435 lb-ft). Underpinned by the resultant electric all-wheel drive, the BMW i5 xDrive40 Sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds. Its top speed is limited to 215 km/h (134 mph).

The third fully electric model variant of the new business sedan stores its energy in a high-voltage battery positioned deep in the vehicle floor. The battery delivers 81.2 kWh of usable energy. The car’s Combined Charging Unit enables AC charging at a rate of 11 kW as standard and 22 kW as an option. And it also allows DC charging at fast-charging stations at up to 205 kW. This means the range of the BMW i5 xDrive40 Sedan can be increased by 156 kilometres (97 miles) in the space of ten minutes. The likewise standard Plug & Charge Multi Contract function enables automatic authentication of the car at public charging points. The range of the new BMW i5 xDrive40 Sedan as calculated in the WLTP cycle is 463 – 538 kilometres (288 – 334 miles).

Additional exterior paint finishes can be specified for all model variants of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan from March 2024. The spectrum of colours will now also include the BMW Individual Frozen Portimao Blue metallic and BMW Individual Malachite Green metallic variants. At the same time, the business sedan will also be offered with extremely exclusive BMW Individual special paint finishes. BMW Individual has come up with around 150 eye-catching shades (solid, metallic and matt) for this product area. All BMW Individual special paint finishes stand out with their impressive depth of colour and exceptional lustre. Customers can unlock an overview of the variants for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan using the BMW Individual Visualizer, which can be accessed via a link in the vehicle configurator.

Added to which, extra variants of the seat and interior surfaces for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan are also available. If the optional comfort seats have been specified, the BMW Individual Merino leather trim can also be specified in the bi-colour variants Dark Violet/Atlas Grey and Taupe Grey/Atlas Grey from March 2024.

New entry-level variant for the BMW iX2; launch of the BMW X2 xDrive20d.

BMW’s current model offensive in the area of electric mobility also brings additional variety to the premium compact segment. A new entry-level variant of the fully electric BMW iX2 will go on sale in March 2024. The new BMW iX2 eDrive20 (electric power consumption, combined: 16.9 – 15.3 kWh/100 km in the WLTP cycle) takes a particularly economical route to delivering locally emission-free driving pleasure in a compact Sports Activity Coupé (SAC). Powered by a 150 kW/204 hp electric motor at the front axle, it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.6 seconds and posts a range of 439 – 478 kilometres (273 – 297 miles) in the WLTP cycle. Its top speed is limited to 170 km/h (106 mph).

The high-voltage battery in the new BMW iX2 eDrive20 serves up 64.78 kWh of usable energy and can be charged from AC sources at 11 kW as standard and up to 22 kW as an option. DC charging is possible at up to 130 kW. Thanks to extremely efficient charging software and predictive heat management capability, brief stops are enough to significantly increase the battery charge. In ten minutes hooked up to a fast-charging station, the BMW iX2 eDrive20 can take on sufficient energy to boost its range by 120 kilometres (75 miles). The BMW iX2 eDrive20 is also equipped for using the Plug & Charge Multi Contract function as standard.

Lining up alongside the new entry-level variant of the BMW iX2 is the new BMW X2 xDrive20d (fuel consumption, combined: 5.2 – 4.8 litres/100 km [54.3 – 58.9 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 136 – 125 g/km in the WLTP cycle). The second diesel variant of the compact SAC is distinguished by even more rapid power delivery and even greater efficiency courtesy of 48V mild hybrid technology. Its 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine links up with an electric motor integrated into the seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch. The motor serves as a crankshaft-driven starter generator and can both ease the load on the diesel engine and act in unison with it. The drive system develops maximum output of 120 kW/163 hp (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 110 kW/150 hp and the electric motor with up to 14 kW/19 hp) and peak torque of 400 Nm / 295 lb-ft (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 360 Nm / 265 lb-ft and the electric motor with up to 55 Nm / 41 lb-ft), all of which is channelled to the road via the intelligent all-wheel-drive system BMW xDrive. This allows the BMW X2 xDrive20d to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.6 seconds. Top speed is 207 km/h (129 mph).

From March 2024, all model variants of the new BMW X2 and new BMW iX2 will also be available with an expanded range of exterior paint finishes. Frozen Black metallic is a new addition to the selection.

BMW XM 50e: high performance with maximum efficiency.

As the latest offshoot of the first ever electrified high-performance model from BMW M GmbH, the new BMW XM 50e (fuel consumption, combined: 1.7 – 1.3 litres/100 km [166.2 – 217.3 mpg imp]; electric power consumption, combined: 32.2 – 31.5 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 37 – 30 g/km in the WLTP cycle) blends signature M dynamism, extrovert design and progressive interior luxury with maximum efficiency. Its M HYBRID drive system is composed of a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine and an electric motor integrated, together with its power electronics, into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. This combination produces system output of 350 kW/476 hp (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 230 kW/313 hp and the electric motor with up to 145 kW/197 hp) and maximum system torque of 700 Nm / 516 lb-ft (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 450 Nm / 332 lb-ft and the electric motor with up to 280 Nm / 206 lb-ft).

The latest version of the 3.0-litre combustion engine fitted in the BMW XM 50e owes its enhanced performance characteristics among other things to the Miller combustion cycle, dual injection, an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head and VANOS variable camshaft timing, which now works electrically. The electric motor has a pre-gearing stage patented by BMW, which allows the effective torque at the transmission input for the motor to be increased to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft). The top speed of the high-performance model – which is also equipped with the all-wheel-drive system M xDrive – is an electronically limited 250 km/h (155 mph). Thanks to an electric range of 77 – 83 kilometres (48 – 52 miles) in the WLTP cycle, the BMW XM 50e can cover much of its everyday mileage – e.g. in urban centres – with zero local emissions. And it can also be driven on electric power alone beyond the city limits at speeds of up to 140 km/h (87 mph).

The most efficient version of the new M HYBRID system comes together with the extraordinary presence of the unmistakable high-performance model in the Sports Activity Vehicle segment. The model-specific design features of the new variant include the black accent band along the sides of the car, plus a surround for the BMW kidney grille and trim detailing for the rear diffuser (both in Pearl-effect Chrome), exhaust tailpipe trim in Black high-gloss and silver-coloured bordering for the model badge. Customers wishing to bring an extra personal touch to the interior of their new BMW XM 50e – which also offers a unique combination of modern sports car flair and extravagant luxury with its M-specific cockpit, M multifunction seats, sculptural headliner and M Lounge in the rear compartment – can specify features including exclusive Vintage leather for the upper section of the instrument panel and door trim panels.

Highway Assistant: innovative Level 2 functionality for more models.

Relaxed travel over long distances and an impressive experience of semi-automated driving are the specialities of the Highway Assistant, which made its debut in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and is now also available for other current BMW models.

As an additional function of the Steering and Lane Control Assistant included in the optional Driving Assistant Professional, the Highway Assistant takes over the vehicle’s speed control, distance control and steering on motorways with structurally separated carriageways when travelling at up to 135 km/h (84 mph). The driver can take their hands off the steering wheel and put them in a comfortable position, provided they continue to pay attention to what is happening on the road and are able to take over the steering again at any time. This Level 2 – as determined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) – semi-automated driving function will also be available for the BMW 7 Series luxury sedan, BMW iX, BMW XM, BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7 from spring 2024.

The Active Lane Change Assistant with eye confirmation included as part of the new Highway Assistant adds another layer to the semi-automated driving experience. As soon as the traffic situation permits, it is capable of performing the necessary steering movements for an overtaking manoeuvre, for example, and adjusting the vehicle’s speed as required. Plus, for the first time, the driver is able to initiate a lane change suggested by this system by simply looking in the exterior mirror to confirm it.

New digital services, My BMW App with additional functions.

Among the digital services available for the first time from spring 2024 is the extended smartphone integration for vehicles equipped with BMW Operating System 9. This enables the Siri voice assistant for the Apple iPhone to be activated directly by voice command and without needing to also press the push-to-talk button. Elsewhere, the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps now boasts improved display of information on charging stations. The available images and ratings are shown both in the list of search results and in the detailed display. The charging station ratings will now be shown clearly on a scale of zero to five stars. 

Added to which, in numerous European countries the BMW iDrive display and control/operation system in many current models also enables digital payment of parking fees and – in Germany – also fuel top-ups from inside the car. As with payment of parking fees, this uses the credit card information pre-stored in the vehicle apps.

As a universal digital interface for data exchange between the customer and their car, the My BMW App offers an ever-expanding number of functions. From spring 2024, Comfort Access with the BMW Digital Key Plus will be integrated into the My BMW App in vehicles equipped with BMW Operating System 8, 8.5 or 9. In addition, the map view for selecting navigation destinations imported into the vehicle has been newly designed. This also improves the search function and the visibility of the most relevant content. Map and routing functions will in future be proposed based on current vehicle or user contexts.

Finally, the new E-mobility Analysis function will also be added to the My Trips menu item in the My BMW App. Based on the customer’s driving behaviour, this function proposes the BMW model with all-electric drive system most suited to them. These recommendations are intended to help spark interest among users of combustion-engined vehicles in switching to an electric vehicle.

Munich. At the IAA Mobility 2023 international motor show in Munich, the BMW Group will be presenting the most recent highlights of its ongoing transformation in the key action areas of electrification, digitalisation and circularity. The latest new models with electrified powertrains from the BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad brands, plus Vision Vehicles and concepts for individual mobility in tomorrow’s world all serve to underline the company’s innovative strength in these fields. As the dawn of a new era in personal mobility approaches, the BMW Group is set to unveil its latest highlight, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, which brings together the Group’s development expertise in the three crucial disciplines for the future of mobility.

The IAA Mobility show is being staged in Munich for the second time. For the BMW Group and its brands, this provides an excellent opportunity to enter into constructive dialogue on the future of individual mobility with local people, as well as with visitors to the show from outside Munich and other stakeholders. The IAA Mobility Summit at the exhibition centre and the BMW Group’s Open Space at Max-Joseph-Platz in the heart of Munich will be the main arenas where BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad present their new products on 5 – 10 September 2023. Among the models visitors can acquaint themselves with here alongside the BMW Vision Neue Klasse is the fully electric BMW i5. And they can also experience the world premieres of the new fully electric MINI Cooper, new fully electric MINI Countryman and BMW CE 02 eParkourer.

Electric, digital, circular – the focus areas of the BMW Group.

The BMW Group’s presence at IAA Mobility 2023 revolves around the company’s rigorous focus on electric, digital and circular mobility for the future and the latest progress it has made in these areas. The BMW Vision Neue Klasse is joined by a selection of new models from across the Group’s brands whose electrified powertrains, digital innovations and resource-efficient manufacturing illustrate the ongoing process of change in a variety of ways.

The new products poised for launch by the BMW brand include the plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 5 Series. The new BMW i7 Protection – the first ever all-electric protection vehicle in the luxury sedan segment – is also making its debut at IAA Mobility 2023.

MINI is unveiling the members of the brand’s new model family for the first time with the help of two world premieres: the new fully electric MINI Cooper and new fully electric MINI Countryman will both be on show at the Open Space site. A new model with all-electric drive also forms the centrepiece of BMW Motorrad’s line-up at Max-Joseph-Platz. Conceived as a compact eParkourer with a trailblazing design, the new BMW CE 02 injects fresh impetus into the urban mobility scene.

Locally emission-free mobility sets the theme for the models on show.

The IAA Mobility show will be officially opened on 5 September at Munich’s exhibition centre. The BMW Group will be represented at its stand in Hall A2, where the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will be unveiled to kick off the event. The BMW i7 Protection all-electric protection vehicle will also be presented for the first time at the IAA Mobility Summit.

The IAA Mobility Summit is taking place under the banner “Experience Connected Mobility” and is aimed primarily at trade visitors. It will showcase trends and technological innovations for future mobility over the course of numerous talks, presentations and panel discussions. One of the central topics is the use of hydrogen as an energy source for current and future vehicles. BMW is carrying out pioneering work in this field with its development and practical testing of a Sports Activity Vehicle with a hydrogen-powered fuel-cell drive system. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is also being exhibited at the Summit.

Locally emission-free mobility is also the dominant theme for the models awaiting visitors to the Open Space site. BMW has at least one purely electrically powered representative in all relevant model segments. The brand is presenting its entire line-up to the public, ranging from the BMW iX1 compact Sports Activity Vehicle via the BMW i4 and BMW i5 to the BMW iX and the BMW i7 luxury sedan.

The Open Space at Max-Joseph-Platz can be visited free of charge on 5 – 9 September from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday 10 September from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, BMW Welt will continue to provide an attractive destination for all automotive enthusiasts during IAA Mobility 2023. The current model portfolios of the BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad brands are presented here, along with the latest BMW and MINI Lifestyle collections. Plus, starting on 2 September 2023, BMW Lifestyle together with BMW M GmbH will be running a GOODS WITH FREUDE pop-up store in the Hofstatt shopping centre at No. 10 Sendlinger Straße. Located just a few minutes’ walk away from the Open Space, the store will feature both familiar lifestyle articles and the new BMW Lifestyle collection.

World premiere: the BMW Vision Neue Klasse.

At IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Group is offering visitors a preview of the Neue Klasse – the forthcoming generation of models from BMW. The BMW Vision Neue Klasse brings together innovations from the areas of electrification, digitalisation and circularity in signature BMW style. The Vision Vehicle takes design, control/operation, efficiency and sustainability into a whole new dimension – one that it will be possible to experience on the road before long.

During IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will be on show at both the Summit and the Open Space. The new Vision Vehicle incorporates the latest innovations in the BMW Group’s key future-focused fields. It therefore builds on the BMW i Vision Circular and the BMW i Vision Dee – which have already demonstrated the BMW Group’s development expertise in the areas of circular economy and digitalisation – and combines their qualities with further new developments in exterior and interior design, user experience and powertrain and battery technology.

World premiere: the plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan.

As well as the all-electric BMW i5, the brand is exhibiting two other model variants with electrified powertrains at IAA Mobility 2023. As early as spring 2024, two models featuring state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology will be added to the new BMW 5 Series Sedan range. Their six-cylinder and four-cylinder in-line petrol engines from the new modular generation of Efficient Dynamics units will each be combined with the latest BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid systems. This will result in a notable increase in output and much sharper power delivery, while also significantly improving efficiency and electric range compared to the outgoing model generation.

The electric motor purpose-developed for the new plug-in hybrid system is integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission together with its power electronics. The highly integrated drive unit contributes up to 145 kW/197 hp to the maximum combined output of 360 kW/489 hp in the case of the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 1.1 – 0.8 l/100 km [256.8 – 353.1 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 22.5 – 20.1 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 24 – 19 g/km in WLTP cycle, provisional figures) and 220 kW/299 hp for the new BMW 530e Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 0.8 – 0.6 l/100 km [353.1 – 470.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 21.4 – 18.9 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 19 – 14 g/km in WLTP cycle, provisional figures).

A BMW-patented innovation has been used to enhance the electric motor’s power delivery in the new plug-in hybrid models: a pre-gearing stage enables the nominal torque of 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) to be increased to effective torque of up to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) at the transmission input for the motor. The compact electric motor is therefore able to boost torque by an amount that would normally only be possible using a larger unit and makes a clear difference both when accelerating off the line and putting in a rapid burst of speed. Electric range is now up to 79 – 90 kilometres (49 – 56 miles) in the WLTP cycle for the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan and 87 – 101 kilometres (54 – 63 miles) in the WLTP cycle for the new BMW 530e Sedan.

The lithium-ion high-voltage battery’s space-saving positioning within the vehicle’s underbody has a beneficial effect on both the car’s centre of gravity and the capacity of its luggage compartment, which holds a total of 520 litres in the plug-in hybrid models – meaning it is just as large as that offered by their purely combustion-engined siblings. The usable energy provided by the high-voltage battery has climbed to 19.4 kWh. At the same time, maximum charging capacity has doubled compared to the outdoing models and now stands at 7.4 kW, enabling the high-voltage battery to be fully recharged from empty in 3.0 hours. When hooked up to a conventional domestic power socket, a full vehicle charge is completed in 9.8 hours.

BMW is presenting a new generation of protection vehicles in the luxury sedan segment at the IAA Mobility 2023 show. The new BMW i7 Protection (electric power consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 30.0 kWh/100 km, provisional figure) is absolutely unique in this segment, as it is the world’s first ever certified protection sedan with an all-electric drive system. Both models blend the integrated protection concept channelled into the development of the new BMW 7 Series range with outstanding levels of ride comfort and spaciousness, advanced equipment features and the unbeatable dynamic prowess for which BMW is renowned. The concept centres around the new and unique BMW Protection Core, which forms a self-supporting body structure made from armour steel. This is then combined with features such as additional armouring for the underbody and roof, plus armoured glass. The result is customised protection from attacks with firearms or explosives for at-risk individuals. The glass in the new protection vehicles even meets the requirements for the highest class of civilian protection, VPAM 10.

The all-electric BMW i7 Protection is equipped with one electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear. Together they generate a combined output of 400 kW/544 hp and maximum combined torque of 745 Nm (549 lb-ft), and create an electric all-wheel-drive system. The new BMW i7 Protection sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in 9.0 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 160 km/h (99 mph). The instantaneous, precisely orchestrated power delivery from the two motors guarantees exceptional traction and directional stability even when the car is being driven hard and performing challenging manoeuvres, such as when escaping from an attack.

Tuned and optimised specifically for this model, the chassis technology also makes allowance for the additional weight of its armouring, resulting in superbly assured performance in any situation. Another unique offering for this segment is the inclusion of Integral Active Steering as standard. This reduces the car’s turning circle, increases agility when cornering at speed and improves driving comfort for rear-seat passengers. The 20-inch light-alloy wheels are a further standout feature. The PAX tyres that also come as standard allow the car to continue its journey at up to 80 km/h (50 mph) even in the event of a total loss of pressure.

The latest generation of BMW iDrive based on BMW Operating System 8.5 is fitted, complete with the BMW Curved Display. The system is intuitive to use and operates in a way familiar to BMW drivers. The special functions relevant to occupant protection are also operated via BMW iDrive. The new protection vehicles can also be tailored precisely to any purpose, with items including a fresh-air supply system, a fire extinguishing system, flashing lights, radio transceivers and flag poles for when the car is on official duty, plus other special customer-specific options.

Trailblazing: the BMW iX5 Hydrogen.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen presented at IAA Mobility 2023 provides further evidence of the company’s superlative innovative strength in the field of drive technology. A pilot series of the Sports Activity Vehicle with hydrogen fuel-cell drive, developed on the basis of the current BMW X5, has entered service for demonstration and test purposes with various target groups around the world. This allows selected test groups who haven’t been involved in the development process to get behind the wheel of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen and gain a direct impression of its attributes for the first time.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is equipped with the latest, fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology. The highly integrated drive unit at the rear axle draws its energy from a high-performance battery with li-ion technology that was specially developed for the hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle and generates maximum output of 295 kW/401 hp. The electric motor also doubles as a generator that feeds energy back into the high-performance battery on the overrun or under braking.

The model’s two 700-bar tanks made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) together hold six kilograms of gaseous hydrogen and can be refilled in three to four minutes. A chemical reaction takes place in the fuel cell system between the hydrogen and oxygen from the air, through which the electric power for the electric motor is generated. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen achieves a range of 504 kilometres (313 miles) in the WLTP cycle without having to refill the tanks. The hydrogen-powered SAV completes the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in under six seconds and goes on to reach a top speed in excess of 180 km/h (112 mph).

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen combines long-distance capabilities and short refuelling stops with zero tailpipe emissions and hallmark BMW driving dynamics. Its hydrogen fuel-cell technology has the potential – provided the necessary basic conditions are in place – to serve as an additional pillar in the BMW Group’s future powertrain portfolio. As part of its ongoing transformation, the BMW Group is following an approach that embraces all technologies when it comes to drive systems. BMW unveils a new generation of protection vehicles in the luxury sedan segment.
The two models developed on the basis of the new BMW 7 Series succeed in blending an unrivalled protection concept with outstanding levels of ride comfort and spaciousness, exceptionally advanced equipment features and the class-beating dynamic prowess for which the brand is renowned. As the world’s first ever protection sedan with an all-electric drive system, the BMW i7 Protection (electric power consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 30.0 kWh/100 km, provisional figure) is a genuine trailblazer. Driven by two powerful electric motors, it meets all the requirements of class VR9 protection without any limitations, as does the new combustion-engine BMW 7 Series Protection (fuel consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 14.6 l/100 km [19.3 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions: 328 g/km, provisional figures). 

The integrated security concept of the new BMW i7 Protection and BMW 7 Series Protection was factored into the development of the new BMW 7 Series range. It centres around the new BMW Protection Core, which is unique worldwide and comprises the model-specific self-supporting body structure made from armour steel. This is then combined with features such as additional armouring for the underbody and roof and armoured glass. The new protection models offer customised protection from attacks with firearms or explosives for at-risk individuals. They have been classified as offering class VR9 protection based on the internationally recognised official test criteria of Germany’s Vereinigung der Prüfstellen für Angriffshemmende Materialien und Konstruktionen (Association of Test Laboratories for Attack-Resistant Materials and Constructions – VPAM, for short). The certification is based, among other things, on the third edition of the guidelines for Bullet Resistant Vehicles (VPAM BRV) with regard to ballistic resistance and the guidelines for Explosive Resistant Vehicles (VPAM ERV, third edition) and PAS 300 with regard to blast resistance. The glass for the two models even protects against fire from calibre 7.62x54 R ammunition — a threat from the highest civilian resistance class VPAM 10. A partial protection extension is also available as an option for the new BMW 7 Series Protection in defined bodywork areas against fire from VPAM 10 ammunition.

The first all-electric model in its protection category and offered exclusively in Europe, the BMW i7 Protection demonstrates how outstanding qualities in terms of security level, driving dynamics, ride comfort and interior comfort are perfectly compatible with a rigorous focus on sustainability. Its arrival sees the BMW Group once again acting as a pioneer in the field of locally emission-free mobility for individuals requiring special protection. At the IAA Mobility 2021 show, the company presented the BMW Concept iX5 Hydrogen Protection VR6, the first protection vehicle with a hydrogen-powered fuel-cell drive system to be certified anywhere in the world. This is largely thanks to the unique BMW Protection Core, which sees the entire supporting structure for a protection sedan’s body constructed from armour steel for the first time. Its three-dimensionally engineered elements are all made of exceptionally resistant, hot-formed steel alloys. The BMW Protection Core forms a self-supporting protective cell, which is then combined with protection-spec doors, armouring for the underbody and safety glass.

Special armouring designed to offer maximum protection against explosives in particular has been used for both the roof and underbody of the two protection sedans. This means the occupants are also protected from drone attacks with explosive charges, for example, and from fragments dispersed by hand grenades on detonation.

Also to be found on the list of standard security features for the BMW 7 Series Protection is a self-sealing fuel tank, with special casing that enables it to seal itself after being hit by a bullet to prevent any loss of fuel.

BMW 7 Series Protection: unwavering protection, superior dynamics.

The petrol-engined version of the new protection sedan has a latest-generation V8 unit under the bonnet. Its BMW TwinPower Turbo technology includes an upgraded turbocharging system with electrically operated blow-off valve and indirect charge air cooling, along with a cross-bank exhaust manifold. The new 4.4-litre eight-cylinder engine uses 48V mild hybrid technology to optimise power delivery and efficiency.

The new drive system generates maximum output of 390 kW/530 hp and peak torque of 750 Nm (553 lb-ft). The model-specific light-alloy wheels in star-spoke design are fitted with tyres – supplied by Michelin in the dimensions 255-740 R510 – that have been specifically developed for the protection sedans. The large diameter of these tyres and the extremely high volume of air they hold compared with rivals enhance ride comfort, while the larger contact area benefits traction and driving stability. The PAX tyres have a runflat ring positioned on the wheel rim which allows the car to continue its journey at up to 80 km/h (50 mph) even in the event of a total loss of pressure.

Driver assistance systems with information and warning function.

In keeping with their status as protection vehicles, the new BMW i7 Protection and new BMW 7 Series Protection are equipped with an extensive selection of driver assistance systems. The functionality of this tech is focused on supporting professional chauffeurs with information and warnings, but without actively intervening to control the vehicle.

The highly advanced sensors developed for the new BMW 7 Series range and all of the cameras available for the luxury sedan are also fitted on the protection vehicles. These provide precise and detailed information on the area around the vehicle in all situations. The requisite data and images are supplied by e.g. the parking view, Panorama View, Remote 3D View and BMW Drive Recorder functions included in the Parking Assistant Plus package. In order to optimise visibility out of the new BMW i7 Protection and new BMW 7 Series Protection in low ambient temperatures, an electric heating function for both the windscreen and the front sections of the side windows comes as standard. Model-specific pre-heating is available as an option.

Another item on the options list is a cool box integrated between the rear seats to ensure the on-board drinks supplies are kept cold. Its net capacity of eight litres offers sufficient space for two water bottles and two glasses, which can be cooled to 4 or 10 degrees Celsius as desired.

The standard-fitted Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, meanwhile, lays on a high-end audio experience. The 1,265-watt digital amplifier, individually adjustable equalizers and 28 speakers combine to deliver a full, even sound for all those on board. An exclusive convenience feature offered for the first time on a BMW model is motorised assistance for opening and closing the doors, which comes as standard. Also unique in this segment is a function that enables occupants to close the doors automatically at the touch of a button after climbing in.

Passengers in the second row of seats in the new BMW i7 Protection and new BMW 7 Series Protection benefit from electrically operated roller sunblinds for the windows on both sides. The blinds extend horizontally from the B-pillar towards the C-pillar and offer what is known as a spy position. Here, the sunblind opens by around ten centimetres at the touch of a button to allow a view outside. From this position, passengers have the option of opening or closing the sunblind fully. A model-specific roller sunblind for the rear window is also included as standard.

Broad range of options for individualising the exterior and interior.

The integrated protection concept of the protection sedans and production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing maximise the scope for customers to put their personal touch on the exterior and interior. Offered as an option alongside the standard illuminated BMW kidney Iconic Glow are the BMW crystal headlights Iconic Glow. The new BMW i7 Protection and new BMW 7 Series Protection can be specified in almost all of the body colours available for the new BMW 7 Series range. These include the BMW Individual paint finishes and BMW Individual special paint finishes. The appointments and design of the interior can likewise be adapted to personal needs and desires at a detail level. Multifunction seats, BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery, and heated and ventilated seats for the front and rear occupants are all part of standard specification. A massage function can be specified for all seats as an option. The optional Executive Lounge includes comfort seats with a reclining function for the rear seat behind the front passenger. The standard-fitted intercom system allows the car’s occupants to communicate with people on the outside without having to open doors or windows. Key features here are microphones integrated into the exterior mirrors, an outside speaker, the hands-free microphone embedded in the headliner and supplementary speakers in the interior. Following the launch of the BMW i4 M50 – BMW M GmbH’s best-selling model worldwide in 2022 – and the BMW iX M60, this is now the company’s third performance model to have an all-electric drive system. The success of electric propulsion among BMW M brand enthusiasts, the consistent expansion of the product offering and the repeated increases in drive system output clearly highlight the huge potential of electric tech to deliver performance that captures the imagination.

The new all-electric performance model from BMW M will make its global debut at the Auto Shanghai international motor show (18–27 April 2023) in China. It will be built at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, together with all other model variants of the luxury sedan. As well as being the lead plant for luxury models, the production facility in Lower Bavaria is also home to the competence centre for electric drive system production, which manufactures both the electric motors and the high-voltage batteries for all variants of the BMW i7 on site. The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology installed in the BMW i7 is being constantly developed in order to further improve both power output and efficiency. This applies not only to the powertrain and power electronics, but also to the high-voltage battery and charging technology.

The BMW i7 M70 xDrive is equipped with highly integrated drive units at the front and rear axles, which bring together the electric motor, power electronics and transmission within a single, very compact housing. The two motors work according to the principle of an electrically excited synchronous motor. This type of design makes it possible to completely avoid the use of rare earth metals (required for magnetic components) in the manufacture of the rotor.

The most powerful BMW electric motor.

An M-specific configuration of the drive system enables the BMW i7 M70 xDrive’s rear-axle motor, in particular, to achieve unprecedented levels of power density. The drive unit has a six-phase design with a dual inverter. This forms the basis for a very substantial increase in peak output that remains on tap up to high speeds, endowing the BMW i7 M70 xDrive with the power delivery characteristic of M models. The motor’s power density of 2.41 kW/kg represents an increase of 25.5 per cent over the unit that drives the rear axle of the BMW i7 xDrive60 and means that the BMW i7 M70 xDrive is fitted with what is currently the company’s most powerful electric motor.

This new standard-setting figure can be attributed to a BMW Group-patented innovation developed under the umbrella of BMW EfficientDynamics, which uses six excitation windings in the motor’s stator instead of the customary three. The resulting “double excitation” compared with conventional units allows the electric motor to generate an extremely high output, despite its exceptionally light and compact design, and to maintain it continuously into the higher echelons of the speed range. This solution is also far superior to a drive configuration using two motors at the rear axle in terms of both power density and efficiency.

Developing maximum power with the M Sport Boost function and M Launch Control.

The motor powering the rear axle generates peak output of 360 kW/489 hp. Its precisely coordinated interaction with the 190 kW/258 hp motor at the front axle creates an electric all-wheel-drive set-up generating system torque of 1,015 Nm (748 lb-ft) in Sport mode and as much as 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft) when M Launch Control or the M Sport Boost function is activated. The drive system in the BMW i7 M70 xDrive therefore offers outstanding pulling power. Capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in an impressive 3.7 seconds, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive is the fastest purely electrically powered BMW model. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). The performance characteristics of the drive system are also characterised by sustained power delivery, which ensures rapid speed increases even in higher speed ranges.

With the M Launch Control function, both drive and traction control are integrated into the engine control unit. This ensures the power generated by the electric motors is metered extremely precisely, allowing the drive system’s M-typical performance characteristics to be instantly converted into stunning acceleration without any loss of traction.

The M Sport Boost function is activated with the shift paddle on the left of the steering wheel and is visualised by Performance-specific graphics in the instrument cluster. At the same time, the standard BMW IconicSounds Electric by Hans Zimmer provides a fitting acoustic accompaniment by switching to a particularly exhilarating, M Performance-specific note.

The soundtrack’s character varies according to the vehicle setting selected, with a clearly perceptible acoustic distinction between the My Mode Personal and Sport. In Sport Mode, the spectrum of sound is particularly dominant and powerful. The drive sound composed specifically for fully electrically powered BMW M models therefore helps to give an even more intense experience of the performance characteristics.

Extremely dynamic performance, excellent long-distance capabilities.

The extremely dynamic performance of the BMW i7 M70 xDrive is allied to excellent long-distance capabilities. Credit here goes not just to the efficiency of the highly integrated drive units, but also a wealth of measures for reducing power consumption. These include adaptive recuperation of braking energy and the heat pump technology used in the integrated heating and cooling system for the cabin and powertrain. The BMW i7 M70 xDrive posts a combined electric power consumption of 23.8 – 20.8 kWh per 100 kilometres in the WLTP test cycle.

Another factor alongside this optimised efficiency is the high-voltage battery’s impressive energy density. Located in the vehicle’s underbody, the battery provides 101.7 kWh of usable energy. This gives the BMW i7 M70 xDrive a range of 488 – 560 kilometres (303 – 348 miles, WLTP cycle), making it eminently suitable for everyday use. The Combined Charging Unit features exceptionally advanced charging software designed for charging the high-voltage battery faster and more efficiently. The BMW i7 M70 xDrive is capable of AC charging at up to 22 kW as standard, while DC power can be taken on board at a rate of up to 195 kW. This means the range can be extended by as much as 170 kilometres (106 miles, WLTP) in just ten minutes during a mid-journey stop at a high-power charging station.

MAX RANGE operating mode: extra range at the push of a button.

The car’s range can be extended while on the move by activating a new drive system setting. The launch of the BMW i7 M70 xDrive marks the introduction of a MAX RANGE mode for the all-electric models in the new BMW 7 Series range. In this mode, drive power and top speed are carefully restricted and comfort functions scaled back, allowing range to be increased by some 15 to 25 per cent.

The MAX RANGE mode was mainly devised for situations where drivers are unable to recharge mid-journey as originally planned because, for example, the charging station they were heading for is out of service. Switching to the My Mode Efficient and activating the MAX RANGE setting extends the range by a comfortable margin for the journey to an alternative charging point for the high-voltage battery. To this end, the vehicle’s top speed is limited to 90 km/h (56 mph). At the same time, the climate control system for the cabin is deactivated and the rear window heating switches to a lower setting, while seat heating, seat ventilation and the steering wheel heating are all disabled too in MAX RANGE mode. A popup window appears in the control display indicating the resulting gain in range as a distance. The information display also blanks out the section of the speed gauge beyond 90 km/h (56 mph) and shows the extra range.

The MAX Range mode can be triggered using the control display’s touchscreen functionality, the Controller or voice commands to the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. It can also be deactivated by hard in-gear acceleration (kickdown), engaging the M Sport Boost function or switching windscreen ventilation to maximum.

Powertrain and chassis technology in an M-specific application.

In addition to the extreme power of the drive system, chassis technology tuned precisely to deliver M-specific performance characteristics contributes to a unique performance experience in the luxury segment.

The electric all-wheel drive, the steering, the dampers and the driving stability systems are each underpinned by the M-specific application of all control systems, ensuring superbly judged driving characteristics in all situations. The overall package of measures was fine-tuned during an exhaustive programme of testing and produces exceptionally sporty handling for a model in this class, accompanied by high comfort over long distances. Helped by the almost silent drive system, passengers in the rear seats, in particular, can enjoy sumptuous levels of comfort. On the other hand, when the driver is exploring their sportier side, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive unveils the blend of dynamism, agility and precision with which BMW M models are synonymous and which is without parallel in this class. The My Mode Sport activates powertrain and chassis settings that are all geared purely to dynamic performance for an exhilarating driving experience.

Standard specification for the BMW i7 M70 xDrive includes M‑specific adaptive two-axle air suspension with electronically controlled dampers and automatic self-levelling. M-specific air springs with reduced volume and an adapted rolling contour increase the number of vibrations on the front and rear axles by six in each case and provide a noticeably direct connection to the vehicle body. M-specific hydraulics are also used to optimise damper response.

An additional shear panel between the bulkhead and spring strut towers produces a substantial increase in body rigidity at the front end of the BMW i7 M70 xDrive. Also to be found on the standard equipment list are Integral Active Steering and the Executive Drive Pro chassis package including active roll stabilisation with Active Roll Comfort. As well as helping to increase comfort, these two systems – together with the stiffer body – hone the car’s handling dynamics. This translates into an appetite for corners, which are taken with sharp and precise turn-in characteristics.

The blue M Sport brakes with M logo fitted as standard come with large brake discs for increased stopping power. Brake callipers painted in black are available as part of the optional M Performance package. This is also the first time that sport tyres have been offered as an option for a purely electrically powered BMW 7 Series model. The standard 21-inch M light-alloy wheels on the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive feature an exclusive, aerodynamically optimised design with a Jet Black solid finish and high-gloss metal inserts.

The superior performance of the BMW i7 M70 xDrive, which results from the most powerful drive system ever developed with BMW eDrive technology and from M-specific chassis technology, is authentically reflected in its confident design. The new top-of-the-range-model of the BMW 7 Series brings extra sporting potency and the expressive aura of a BMW M model to the captivating visual presence of the latest model generation. In combination with the luxurious elegance generated by the sedan´s proportions, this creates a stylish individuality that corresponds to the exclusive character of the BMW i7 M70 xDrive.

Like all members of the new BMW 7 Series model line-up, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive embodies the outstanding innovative power of the brand. Helping the car set new standards in the luxury segment – alongside its pioneering drive system technology and revolutionary design – is an array of innovative equipment features. Among the highlights also bringing a sense of progressive luxury to the range-topping model and enhancing the feeling of wellbeing over long journeys are the BMW Interaction Bar in the cockpit and the Executive Lounge with optimised reclining function in the rear. The unique BMW Theatre Screen and Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System with optional in-seat exciters turn the rear compartment into an exclusive personal cinema on wheels. Comfort and safety are elevated another notch by advanced systems for automated driving and parking. For example, the Parking Assistant and Manoeuvre Assistant can now also be controlled remotely using the My BMW App. This allows customers to enter and exit tight parking spaces with significantly greater ease.

Opening and closing the doors automatically using the My BMW App and BMW Digital Key Plus.

Since March 2023 it has been possible in some countries to open and close the optional automatic doors of the new BMW 7 Series individually from outside the car and at a distance of up to six metres using the My BMW App – by pressing the relevant buttons on the smartphone display. The BMW Digital Key Plus, a smartphone-based digital vehicle key, ensures that getting into and out of the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive is now even more comfortable. Making the difference here is an extended lock/unlock function for the automatic unlocking of the doors when approaching the car and the automatic locking process when walking away. It now also includes a contact-free opening and closing function for the driver’s door.

The driver’s dooropens automatically when the smartphone on which the BMW Digital Key Plus is installed comes within a certain distance of the car. After getting into the car, the driver can close the door again by pressing the brake pedal. Additionally, the BMW Digital Key Plus links up with the integrated collision protection functions for the automatic doors in order to stop the movement of the door if an obstacle is detected. The extended BMW Digital Key Plus is expected to be available from summer 2023 for all new BMW 7 Series cars fitted with automatic doors.

Distinctive front-end design signals superlative dynamism.

Exclusive accents and M-typical design elements reflecting the technical requirements of a car when driven with sporting commitment ensure that the BMW i7 M70 xDrive stands apart from the other models in the 7 Series model line-up with its exterior looks. Its distinctive aura signals the cars dynamism and highlights at first glance the performance potential of the most powerful electrically powered model in the BMW Group product range.

At the heart of the front-end design for the new flagship model is the new interpretation of the hallmark BMW twin circular headlights and kidney grille. The light functions are divided into two separate areas. The extremely slim strip of lights set higher up in the front end brings together the daytime driving lights, sidelights and turn indicators. Available as an option, the BMW crystal headlights Iconic Glow create a unique light effect. The low-beam and high-beam headlights are positioned in the dark lower units chiselled deep into the front apron.

The imposing presence of the front end gains additional visual impact with the contour lighting for the BMW kidney grille. On cars specified with the optional M Performance package, it combines with a grille surround in Black high-gloss for the first time on the BMW i7 M70 xDrive. This creates an unmistakable light signature, and the front end of the car is additionally showcased to impressive effect by the richly contrasting visual interplay between the brightly illuminated contouring and the dark shimmer of the grille surround.

Another eye-catching feature of the performance model’s front-end design is the surfacing above the BMW kidney grille. The indented sweep running down the centre of the bonnet extends to the upper edge of the BMW kidney grille, providing an eye-catching border for the BMW badge.

The BMW kidney grille – which sports an M logo, underlining the range-topping model’s dynamic character – is bordered by Black high-gloss surfaces, giving it even greater visual prominence. Large air guide elements painted in body colour jut out from the outer sections of the front apron, framing the black centre section, and steer the onrushing air to the air curtains positioned at the extreme left- and right-hand edges of the apron.

Flanks and rear with M-specific design features.

M-specific design features along the flanks and at the rear of the BMW i7 M70 xDrive clearly showcase the performance character of the top-of-the-range model variant. Eye-catching M side skirts, M logos with embellished borders on the front side panels, M High-gloss Shadowline trim and black M exterior mirrors with twin-stalk design add sporting flourishes.

A model-specific rear apron with diffuser insert rounds off the expressive appearance of this fully electric M Performance model. Cars specified with the optional M Performance package feature a black M rear spoiler, a black accent strip between the rear lights and an inlay – also in black – for the rear apron.

New variants of the BMW Individual two-tone paint finish.

A large selection of exterior paint shades is available for the BMW i7 M70 xDrive, including variants of striking matt-sheen Frozen paint finishes. Owners can add an extra layer of visual extravagance with BMW Individual two-tone paintwork, which can now include BMW Individual special paintwork colours. Available from the launch of the BMW i7 M70 xDrive is the combination of BMW Individual Liquid Copper metallic for the lower section of the body and Saphire Black metallic for the upper section. An exquisite, precisely drawn coach line separates the two colour zones from one another like a delicate signature.

In addition, the range of exterior colours offers customers extra scope for giving their car a bespoke look. For example, eight two-tone variants and well over 100 BMW Individual special paintwork colours allow them to find a variant that precisely matches their tastes and therefore brings a very personal touch to the appearance of their BMW i7 M70 xDrive. All BMW Individual special paintwork colours are applied in a separate manufacturing process, with a higher proportion of the work carried out by hand.

Sustainably produced Frozen paint finishes based on biomass.

The BMW Group is the first automotive manufacturer worldwide to use matt paints made from biomass instead of crude oil at its European plants. The Frozen paint finishes available for the BMW i7 M70 xDrive are produced using this innovative process. Renewable raw materials such as bio-waste or waste from sewage treatment plants, which can replace the organic components of paint, serve as the starting material for these “biomass balance” paints.

The biomass balance process does not involve changing the formulation of the product; instead, it is about procuring the raw materials from carefully calculated sustainable sources. In fact, these sustainable paints are chemically identical to equivalents using fossil raw materials and meet the same high quality standards that the BMW Group applies for all the materials it uses. The use of sustainable paints made with biowaste not only reduces consumption of fossil resources, but also avoids the CO₂ emissions associated with the production, transport and processing of crude oil.

Sporting aura and maximum interior individualisation.

Customers wishing to customise the ambience inside the BMW i7 M70 xDrive as well as the looks of the outside can do so in a variety of ways. The i7 M70 xDrive comes as standard with M-specific equipment details that accentuate its sporting flair and enhance its concentrated sense of driving pleasure. These include illuminated M door sills, M Merino leather trim in Black/Atlas Grey, an M leather steering wheel, M-specific content on the BMW Curved Display and an M driver’s footrest.

Among the items on the options list are the BMW Individual interior with and without exclusives in a total of nine color variants as well as the BMW Individual leather merino/wool-cashmere combination with exclusive features in two variants, which is also offered in Black/Dark Grey. As an option for the i7 M70 xDrive a Carbon Fibre M interior trim with Silver Threads, in conjunction with surfaces in Piano Black is offered.

The BMW iDrive update also enables a broader offering of digital content for information and entertainment, shorter function update cycles, better information on charging points for electric vehicles and improved access to a host of specific online services. BMW iDrive with QuickSelect also teams up with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, and so focuses squarely on operation using the touchscreen and natural language.

BMW iDrive with QuickSelect is based on BMW Operating System 8.5, which is making its debut in a series-produced model. The BMW i7 M70 xDrive therefore not only represents a new dimension in driving pleasure with an all-electric drive system, it also ushers in the latest digital display and control/operation concept and infotainment.

Functions are shown on a single level and can be activated using rapid-access tech.

The new home screen displays the navigation system’s map view or other individually configurable graphics at all times. On the same level, function icons appearing in a vertical arrangement on the driver’s side of the user interface can be selected with a swipe of the finger. QuickSelect allows the associated functions to be accessed directly and without having to pass through a submenu. And once the relevant settings have been chosen, a quick tap on the home icon at the lower edge of the display is all it takes to return to the home screen.

The new menu structure makes activating functions and settings much faster and simpler. The on-board digital content – just like the hardware, in the form of the BMW Curved Display – is designed to enhance the driver focus for which BMW is renowned. BMW iDrive provides the right information in the right place and at the right time. To ensure intuitive operation while on the move, the graphical interface and menu structure feature a layout developed by BMW Group Design that is both consistent and characteristic of the brand.

The emotionally engaging performance experience on board the new BMW i7 M70 xDrive is further enhanced by M-specific content in the BMW Curved Display. In key areas, the typography and presentation of graphics reflect those in the cockpit of high-performance models from BMW M GmbH. The numbers in the speed read-out on the information display appear in a platinum/silver colour. Plus, activating the M Sport Boost function triggers a typically M visual accompaniment.

The BMW iDrive with QuickSelect is underpinned by an upgraded version of BMW Operating System 8, as employed in current BMW models with the BMW Curved Display. BMW Operating System 8.5 uses the latest generation of the infotainment head unit, which takes care of graphics processing, among other things.

BMW Maps with new charging-optimised route guidance.

Other highlights of the new BMW iDrive include the extended functionality of the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps. It now offers not only Augmented View on the information display behind the steering wheel, but also improved functions for even more precise charging-optimised route planning. This helps to make long journeys in the BMW i7 M70 xDrive particularly comfortable, efficient and swift.

Added to which, the services and apps already introduced in the new BMW 7 Series are also available with BMW Operating System 8.5. For example, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and other voice-controlled assistants, BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades, BMW Remote Software Upgrades, video streaming on the control display, smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay^® and Android Auto™, My Modes and the Personal eSIM can also be used in the BMW i7 M70 xDrive.

Prihodnji vodilni model serije BMW i7 M70 xDrive (kombinirana poraba električne energije po WLTP: 26A – 21,2 kWh/100 km; emisije CO2: 0 g/km; vrednosti po NEDC: -) s povsem električnim pogonskim sistemom in priključni hibrid BMW M760e xDrive (kombinirana poraba bencina: 1,2–1,1 litra/100 km; kombinirana poraba električne energije: 26,9 kWh–25,8 kWh/100 km; kombinirane emisije CO2: 28–25 g/km po WLTP, vrednosti po NEDC: -) bosta na voljo v začetku leta 2023/kasneje v 2023. Električni avtomobili BMW M zagotavljajo izvrstno učinkovitost in značilne lastnosti M performance.

Proizvodnja poteka v tovarni skupine BMW v Dingolfingu. Prvič doslej se model BMW z izborom različnih konvencionalnih motorjev, priključnih hibridnih sistemov in povsem električnega pogona proizvaja na isti proizvodni liniji. Sistematično zmanjšanje odtisa CO2 s pomočjo trajnostne strategije zajema tudi dobaviteljsko verigo, velik delež naravnih in recikliranih materialov ter uporabo zelene energije v proizvodnji.

Izrazita prisotnost, ki jo izžarevajo monolitne površine in nov videz sprednjega dela z ekskluzivnim slogom oblikovanja, je značilna za luksuzne modele znamke BMW. Žarometi so tokrat razdeljeni na dva dela, pri čemer je kot luči za dnevno vožnjo mogoče opcijsko naročiti kristalne žaromete BMW Iconic Glow. Različica karoserije z medosno razdaljo 3.215 milimetrov (pet milimetrov daljša od predhodnega modela z najdaljšo medosno razdaljo) je na voljo globalno. To prinaša izjemno prostornost zadnjega dela vozila. Značilna razmerja BMW zajemajo za 130 milimetrov večjo dolžino, 48 milimetrov večjo širino in 51 milimetrov večjo višino vozila. Del standardne opreme so vsaj 19-palčna lita aluminijasta platišča, odvisno od različice modela.

Nove modele BMW serije 7 je mogoče opcijsko naročiti z vrati, ki se samodejno odpirajo in zapirajo. Sodelovanje s podjetjema Huawei in lqiyi omogoča pretakanje vsebin glede na posamezne države in ponudbo razvedrila na Kitajskem. Antenski sistem, združljiv s 5G, zagotavlja optimizirano povezljivost.

Nova interpretacija znanega oblikovanja k vozniku usmerjenih BMW kabin z ukrivljenim zaslonom BMW. 12,3-palčna instrumentna plošča in 14,9-palčni nadzorni prikazovalnik pod enotnim steklom sta ukrivljena proti vozniku. Vizualno učinkovito sta nameščena na notranji okrasni okvir iz lesa z odprtoporno strukturo ali iz karbona, odvisno od različice modela. V edinstveni interakcijski vrstici BMW so združeni notranja razsvetljava, dekorativni elementi in funkcije za upravljanje ter skoraj nevidni zračniki v samo eno komponento, ki poteka po vsej širini instrumentne plošče vse do obloge vrat.

Subtilno osvetljena nadzorna plošča v sredinski konzoli ima novo oblikovano prestavno ročico. Opcijsko so nekatere krmilne funkcije na voljo zastekljene. Na novo oblikovane funkcijske tipke na volanu omogočajo aktiven taktilni vnos. Glede na različico modela je na voljo dvokraki ali trikraki volan z ravnim spodnjim delom.

Na novo so razvite sedežne prevleke iz veganza – usnju podobnega materiala, ki je standardno na voljo v štirih barvah. Opcije: notranjost BMW Individual z usnjem merino in notranjost BMW M Sport za modele BMW M in vozila s standardno vgrajenim paketom M Sport – obe sta na voljo v petih barvah. Novi BMW i7 xDrive60 s peto generacijo tehnologije BMW eDrive: izjemno integriran pogonski sistem, inteligentno upravljanje energije, nov postopek polnjenja, napredna tehnologija baterijskih celic. Učinkoviti elektromotorji, optimizirana prilagodljiva rekuperacija, izboljšano upravljanje klime in zelo velika gostota visokonapetostne baterije z uporabno kapaciteto 101,7 kWh zagotavljajo doseg 590–625 kilometrov po WLTP, kar omogoča dolge vožnje.

Polnjenje DC z močjo do 195 kW pomeni, da je mogoče doseg povečati za približno 170 kilometrov že z desetimi minutami polnjenja. Predvidljivo upravljanje toplote omogoča predpripravo baterije za optimalno polnjenje.

V začetku leta 2023 se bodo novi seriji pridružili tudi priključni hibridni modeli z električnim dosegom več kot 80 kilometrov po WLTP. Nova generacija priključne hibridne tehnologije združuje vrstni šestvaljni bencinski motor in elektromotor, vgrajen v menjalnik. Večja moč sistema, manjša poraba goriva, energijska vsebnost visokonapetostne baterije, ki je za več kot 50 odstotkov večja od prejšnjih modelov, in podvojena moč polnjenja.

Elektrifikacija različic modelov z motorji z notranjim izgorevanjem povečuje učinkovitost. Najnovejša generacija 48-voltnega blago hibridnega sistema z zagonskim generatorjem, nameščenim na ročično gred, ki je vgrajen v menjalnik.

Novi model BMW 760i xDrive (kombinirana poraba goriva po WLTP: 11,2 L/100 km; emisije CO2: 255 g/km; vrednosti po NEDC: -) z bencinskim motorjem V8 400 kW/544 KM bo na voljo od začetka prodaje v ZDA in drugih izbranih prodajnih regijah. Prva predstavitev nove generacije vrstnih šestvaljnih bencinskih motorjev v dveh modelih, ki bosta na voljo že od predstavitve: novi BMW 740i (poraba goriva po WLTP: 8,0–7,0 L/100 km; izpusti CO2: 183–159 g/km; vrednosti po NEDC: -) 280 kW/380 KM za ZDA in Kitajsko, BMW 735i (kombinirana poraba goriva po WLTP: 7,9 L/100 km; emisije CO2: 182 g/km; vrednosti po NEDC: -) z 210 kW/286 KM bo na voljo na kitajskem trgu in drugih izbranih prodajnih regijah. Novi model BMW 7 xDrive (kombinirana poraba goriva po WLTP: 6,9–5,9 L/100 km; izpusti CO2: 182–157 g/km; vrednosti po NEDC: -) z vrstnim šestvaljnim dizelskim motorjem, ki razvije do 220 kW/300 KM, bo serijo dopolnil v Evropi in drugih izbranih prodajnih regijah spomladi leta 2023.

Elektrificirani avtomobili BMW M, ki prihajajo na trg leta 2023, zagotavljajo izjemno kombinacijo zmogljivosti in trajnostnosti. Povsem električni BMW \7 M70 xDrive z močjo 485 kW/660 KM (predvidene vrednosti, ki temeljijo na trenutni stopnji razvoja avtomobila in vključujejo začasne pospeške). BMW M760e xDrive priključni hibridni model (kombinirana poraba bencina: 1,2– 1,1 litra/100 km; kombinirana poraba električne energije: 26,9 kWh– 25,8 kWh/100 km; kombinirane emisije CO2: 28–25 g/km po WLTP, vrednosti po NEDC: -) ima sistemsko moč 420 kW/571 KM.

Široko nadgrajena tehnologija podvozja optimizira mešanico užitkov v športni vožnji za volanom in prvovrstnega udobja na zadnjih sedežih. Dvoosno zračno vzmetenje in prilagodljivo podvozje sta vgrajena standardno. Opcijsko sta na voljo sistema integralnega aktivnega krmiljenja in Executive Drive Pro z optimizirano aktivno stabilizacijo nihanja okoli vzdolžne osi.

Na novo oblikovani paket M Sport s funkcijami, med katerimi je zavorni sistem M Sport, in 20-palčna aluminijasta platišča M. Hkrati je prvič doslej paket M Sport Pro na voljo tudi za modele BMW serije 7.

V avtomobilih BMW M, ki bodo na voljo v letu 2023, bodo na voljo oblikovalski elementi in sistemi podvozij, značilni za posamezne modele. Med standardno opremo so paket Executive Drive Pro in 21-palčna lita aluminijasta platišča M. Kot opcija so na voljo paket M Performance in 22-palčna lita aluminijasta platišča M, ki so na voljo v sklopu programa delov BMW M Performance.

Na voljo je inovativna tehnologija z novo generacijo senzorjev, novo programsko opremo in zmogljivo računalniško platformo z izjemnim potencialom za tretjo stopnjo samodejne vožnje in parkiranja. Kot del standardne opreme za novi BMW serijo 7 je na voljo: opozorilo pred čelnim trkom, ki zazna bližajoči se promet med zavijanjem levo (v državah, kjer vozila vozijo po desni) ter kolesarje in pešce in zavijanju desno. Hkrati je na voljo parkirni asistent z asistentom za vzvratno vožnjo. Med opcijsko opremo so asistent pri krmiljenju in ohranjanju vozila na voznem pasu, aktivna navigacija, samodejni sistem za omejevanje hitrosti Speed Limit Assist, funkcija nadzora poti, prepoznavanje semaforjev, asistent za menjavo voznega pasu in asistent za manevriranje.

Nova generacija operacijskega sistema BMW iDrive s številnimi funkcijami bo premierno na voljo v vozilih BMW serije 7: BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant z dodatnimi funkcijami je mogoče upravljati z zadnjih sedežev; ekskluzivni programi My Modes Expressive, Relax, Theatre Mode in Digital Art Mode (predvidoma na voljo od spomladi 2023); pretakanje videov YouTube na zahtevo na nadzornem prikazovalniku. 5,5-palčni krmilniki na dotik, vgrajeni v zadnja vrata, služijo kot upravljalne enote za razvedrilo v vozilu, telefoniranje na zadnjih sedežih, uravnavanje položaja sedeža in notranjo razsvetljavo. Projektor BMW Head-Up z novo grafično podobo. Navigacija z razširjenim prikazom Augmented View na nadzornem prikazovalniku. Večmodalno upravljanje BMW Natural Interaction.

Notranja kamera omogoča fotografiranje in prenos posnetkov notranjosti na pametni telefon uporabnika. Možnost integracije pametnih telefonov z Apple CarPlay in Android Auto. V vozilu je mogoče uporabljati osebno kartico eSIM. Individualizirana uporabniška izkušnja z aplikacijama BMW ID in My BMW. Digitalni ključ BMW Plus z ultraširokopasovno radijsko tehnologijo zagotavlja boljšo varnost. Posodabljanje programske opreme na daljavo in BMW ConnectedDrive Store za uvoz novih in izboljšanih funkcij vozila.

BMW, eden izmed svetovno najuspešnejših proizvajalcev premium avtomobilov se prav tako ponaša z izvrstnim položajem na trgu štirikolesnega pogona, segmentu, kamor je prvič vstopil pred 30 leti. Približno vsako tretje prodano vozilo BMW po vsem svetu je danes opremljeno z inteligentnim sistemom štirikolesnega pogona BMW xDrive. Uspešnost znamke BMW v tem segmentu ni le rezultat priljubljenih modelov BMW X, ampak tudi štirikolesnih modelov drugih modelnih serij, od BMW serije 1 do BMW serije 7. Vzdolž teh modelnih serij je na voljo široka izbira modelov s štirikolesnim pogonom za zelo različne verzije motorjev. Hkrati pa BMW nadaljuje z razvojem štirikolesne tehnologije in jo nenehno izpopolnjuje. Z nudenjem BMW xDrive v kombinaciji s hibridnim pogonom in platformo podvozja s sprednjim pogonom, proizvajalec vedno znova dokazuje svojo usposobljenost na tem področju, ki mu bo zagotovila vodilni položaj v tem segmentu tudi v prihodnje. BMW nudi danes več kot 110 modelov – s katerimkoli tipom menjalnika – z BMW xDrive v 12 različnih modelnih serijah, prav tako pa je ta oprema na voljo tudi pri priključnem hibridu BMW i8 in kompaktnem BMW 225xe z električnim pogonom.

Žarišče od prvega dne naprej: trakcija in dinamika.
Prvi naskok znamke BMW na trg štirikolesnega pogona se je zgodil z razkritjem BMW 325i “Allrad” na mednarodnem avtomobilskem salonu v Frankfurtu leta 1985. Novinec navzven ni takoj razkril svojih notranjih kvalitet, zato je imela njegova predstava, ko so ga novinarji odpeljali na testno vožnjo še toliko večji “vau” efekt. Prvi sistem štirikolesnega pogona BMW ni izboljšal le trakcije izven urejenih cest in v neugodnih vremenskih razmerah, ampak je omogočal tudi bolj dinamično vožnjo skozi zavoje. “Novi BMW je nov šampion, ko gre za obnašanje vozila med vožnjo,” se je glasila soglasna sodba testnih voznikov nemške avtomobilistične revije Auto Zeitung kmalu po prvem razkritju.

Današnji inteligentni sistem štirikolesnega pogona BMW xDrive pomika značilno vozno dinamiko BMW na novo raven. Aktualna generacija tega sistema je krmiljena s pomočjo integriranega upravljanja šasije (ICM), ki zagotavlja, da se xDrive vedno odzove ustrezno in v najbolj zgodnjem možnem trenutku, ki se določi na osnovi zanesljivega zaznavanja in nadzorovanja trenutne vozne situacije. Posegi se lahko izvajajo bodisi izključno z BMW xDrive bodisi z xDrive v kombinaciji z dinamičnim nadzorom stabilnosti (DSC) ali dinamičnim nadzorom zmogljivosti (DPC). Hiter in natančen nadzor porazdelitve pogonskega momenta zagotavlja značilne vozne lastnosti BMW tudi pri ekstremno dinamični vožnji skozi zavoj.

S tem je sistem štirikolesnega pogona natančno prilagojen tipičnim lastnostim pogona BMW na vsa štiri kolesa. To pomeni, da se pri modelih s štirikolesnim pogonom večji delež pogonskega momenta posreduje na zadnji kolesi, če vožnja poteka v normalnih voznih razmerah. Na ta način se ohrani natančna povratna informacija krmiljenja BMW, ki praktično odpravi navor krmiljenja. Za natančno zavijanje in visoko stabilnost ohranjanje smeri vožnje, najnovejša generacija sistema BMW xDrive povečuje količino moči na zadnji kolesni par, kakor hitro vozilo vstopi v zavoj, kar še izboljša užitek v vožnji, ki je sinonim za BMW.

Tehnologija štirikolesnega pogona BMW: neprekinjena evolucija od leta 1985.
Stalni sistem štirikolesnega pogona, ki je vgrajen v BMW 325i “Allrad” iz leta 1985, porazdeli pogonski moment med sprednjo in zadnjo premo v razmerju 37 : 63. Kot odgovor na razlike pri vrtilni frekvenci koles sta viskozna sklopka v razdelilnem gonilu in zadnji diferencial lahko zagotovila praktično togo povezavo med sprednjo in zadnjo premo, da bi se izboljšala trakcija in stabilnost. Ime modela se je kmalu preimenovalo v BMW 325iX, od leta 1988 pa je bil na voljo tudi v različici “touring” (mala začetnica v veljavi do in vključno s serijo E46).

1991: BMW 525iX.
Tri leta pozneje je BMW vpeljal štirikolesni pogon tudi v BMW serije 5. Prvič je bila porazdelitev moči uravnavana elektronsko. Prenovljen sistem je vključeval lamelne sklopke, ki so omogočale, da se je standardna porazdelitev moči med sprednjo in zadnjo premo v razmerju 36 : 64 spreminjala brezstopenjsko in avtomatsko v skladu z voznimi razmerami. Najprej se je hidravlično krmiljena lamelna sklopka uporabljala na zadnji premi, vendar je bila ta pozneje zamenjana z elektronsko krmiljenim selektivnim zavornim posegom. Sistem, ki je nadzoroval vozno situacijo prek signalov vrtilne frekvence koles iz ABS, je bil dopolnjen z dodatnimi informacijami o stanju zavor, vrtilni frekvenci motorja in položaju dušilne lopute.

Sistem štirikolesnega pogona v BMW 525iX je bil od vsega začetka razred zase. Elektronski nadzorni sistem je posredoval zelo hitro in natančno povratno informacijo, kar je pomenilo varno in nevtralno obnašanje vozila med vožnjo tudi v zahtevnih voznih razmerah, kot so mokre ali zasnežene ceste. Tudi pri BMW serije 5 so bili prvi modeli s štirikolesnim pogonom na voljo kot Limuzina ali Touring.

1999: Športno terensko vozilo (SAV) odpira novo poglavje.
Na uvodu v novo tisočletje je senzacionalno debitiral zelo inovativen koncept vozila znamke BMW. BMW X5, prvo športno terensko vozilo (SAV), je kupce navdušil z vozno dinamiko, ki je bila brez primere med ostalimi terenskimi vozili tistega časa. Izvrsten sistem štirikolesnega pogona je pri tem odigral pomembno vlogo. Planetno gonilo je porazdelilo pogonski moment med sprednjo in zadnjo premo v razmerju 38 : 62, medtem ko so elektronski nadzorni sistemi, kot npr. DSC (dinamični nadzor stabilnosti), ADB-X (avtomatska diferencialna zavora) in HDC (pomoč pri spuščanju po klancu), zagotavljali, da je bil novi BMW X5 športen na cesti in opremljen za premagovanje zahtevnih razmer izven utrjenih poti.

V letih, ki so sledila uspešnemu lansiranju koncepta SAV na trg, ni bilo pri BMW nobenega popuščanja v hitrem tempu razvoja štirikolesnega pogona. Leta 2000 je za model specifična različica tehnologije štirikolesnega pogona BMW X5 postala na voljo za četrto generacijo BMW serije 3.

2003: BMW xDrive debitira v BMW X3 in BMW X5.
Štiri leta od prihoda na trg BMW X5, je BMW nadaljeval s svojo dinamiko z lansiranjem koncepta SAV v novem segmentu vozil. Novi BMW X3 je bil kompaktnejši od BMW X5 in je nudil še bolj agilne vozne lastnosti. Postavil je nove mejnike in v naslednjih letih ostal edini premium model v svojem razredu.

Prenovljen sistem štirikolesnega pogona BMW xDrive, ki je bil istega leta vpeljan v BMW X3 in BMW X5, je kmalu povečal vodilni položaj znamke BMW v segmentu štirikolesnega pogona. Na osnovi ekstremno hitro delujoče elektronske lamelne sklopke v razdelilnem gonilu, je xDrive deloval v tandemu z dinamičnim nadzorom stabilnosti (DSC), ki sta porazdelitev pogonskega momenta stalno prilagajala aktualni vozni situaciji. Poleg vrtilne frekvence koles je elektronski nadzorni sistem prvič upošteval tudi podatke dinamičnega nadzora stabilnosti (DSC), kot so npr. krmilni kot, položaj pedala za plin in bočni pospešek. Zato je BMW xDrive prvi svetovni, in še vedno edini, “inteligentni” sistem štirikolesnega pogona. V nasprotju s konvencionalnimi sistemi štirikolesnega pogona, ki se odzovejo, ko se vsaj eno kolo že vrti v prazno, lahko xDrive zazna nevarnost prekrmiljenja ali podkrmiljenja že ob prvih znakih in proaktivno posreduje s preusmeritvijo toka pogonskega momenta.

Inteligentni sistem štirikolesnega pogona BMW xDrive v naslednjih letih ni bil vgrajen le v modele BMW X, ampak tudi v različice xDrive modelov BMW serije 3 in serije 5 obeh karoserijskih izvedb (Limuzina in Touring). Do prihoda na trg BMW X3 druge generacije v letu 2010, je bilo po vsem svetu prodanih več kot 600.000 vozil te serije. Nekoliko prej je prodaja BMW X5 – ki je s svojo drugo generacijo prišel na trg v letu 2006 – presegla znamko enega milijona.

2008: SAC z dinamičnim nadzorom zmogljivosti (DPC) in hibridnim pogonom.
Z dvema močno uveljavljenima karoserijskima izvedenkama SAV v svojih segmentih, je BMW leta 2007 javnosti predstavil prvo svetovno športno terensko vozilo s silhueto kupeja (SAC). Popolnoma novi BMW X6, ki je bil razkrit na mednarodnem avtomobilskem salonu v Frankfurtu, je dvignil značilen dinamičen značaj modelov BMW X na novo raven intenzivnosti. Inteligentni sistem štirikolesnega pogona je bil prvič kombiniran z dinamičnim nadzorom zmogljivosti (DPC), ki spreminja porazdelitev pogonskega momenta med zadnjima kolesoma pri vožnji skozi zavoj, kar zagotavlja neprekosljivo agilnost in stabilnost tudi pri nenadnih spremembah hitrosti ali prehitevanju. Leta 2009 je BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstriral naslednjo odlično kombinacijo – med BMW xDrive in hibridnim pogonom. Medtem je oddelek BMW M GmbH istega leta k svoji ponudbi športnih vozil z visoko zmogljivostjo dodal dva zelo posebna modela. Z M uglašenim sistemom BMW xDrive, vključno z dinamičnim nadzorom zmogljivosti (DPC), sta BMW X5 M in BMW X6 M pokazala zmogljivost, ki doslej v segmentu vsekolesnega pogona ni bila poznana.

Leto 2009 je bilo premierno še za en novi model z oznako X, to je BMW X1. V naslednjih letih je BMW X1 ostal edino vozilo svoje vrste v premium kompaktnem segmentu. Njegov inteligentni sistem štirikolesnega pogona BMW xDrive, enak kot v novem BMW X3 (2010), je bil prav tako združljiv z nadzorom zmogljivosti. Slednji selektivno zavira kolo na notranji strani zavoja, medtem ko sočasno povečuje moč motorja, kar zagotavlja hitro in precizno vožnjo skozi zavoje in dviguje agilne vozne lastnosti obeh modelov na novo raven.

BMW xDrive na voljo tudi za ostale modelne serije.
Nenehen napredek modelov BMW X je spremljala rast števila različic xDrive, ki so bile na voljo tudi pri ostalih modelnih serijah BMW. BMW xDrive, ki je bil konstruiran za izboljšanje agilnosti pri vožnji skozi zavoj in večjo natančnost, omogoča izpopolnjeno vozno doživetje in optimalno kombinacijo dinamike ter udobja. Zato je bilo le še vprašanje časa, kdaj bo ta inteligentna pogonska tehnologija doživela svoj prvenec tudi v BMW serije 7 (leta 2009). Spomladi leta 2012 sta bila prva modela Coupé in Cabrio s štirikolesnim pogonom na voljo tudi v športnem BMW serije 6. BMW xDrive se lahko naroči pri aktualnih BMW serije 3 in serije 5 ter, od leta 2013, v modelih Cabrio, Coupé in Gran Coupé novega BMW serije 4.

Nenehno spodbujanje napredka.
Z lansiranjem novega BMW X4 v letu 2014 je BMW naredil nov korak v premium segmentu srednje velikih vozil. Nova izvedenka SAC nudi edinstveno kombinacijo užitka v vožnji, prefinjenega sloga in moderne praktičnosti. Model X4 ima tehnologijo BMW xDrive na voljo že v osnovni opremi in je razpoložljiv s širokim spektrom različic motorjev. Istega leta je BMW prav tako predstavil modele BMW X5 tretje generacije, BMW X6 druge generacije in M športni različici obeh modelov. BMW xDrive je debitiral še v novem BMW serije 2 Active Tourer. To je bil nekoliko drugačen prvenec, saj je BMW svoj inteligentni sistem štirikolesnega pogona prvič kombiniral s popolnoma novo platformo podvozja s sprednjim pogonom.

Z BMW i8, ki je bil javnosti predstavljen leta 2014, je BMW Group pogumno zakorakal v novo smer, ki je vključevala tudi sistem štirikolesnega pogona. Ta športni model s konceptom sedežev 2 + 2 poganja zelo napreden priključni hibridni sistem, ki združuje motor z notranjim zgorevanjem na zadnji in elektromotor z visoko učinkovitostjo na sprednji premi.

Osredotočen na prihodnost: BMW xDrive sreča BMW eDrive.
Najnovejši modeli BMW s štirikolesnim pogonom prinašajo tehnološki napredek, ki je močno vpet v mobilnost prihodnosti. Vozilu BMW i8 je sledil mednarodni prihod na trg prvega proizvodnega priključnega hibrida iz jedrne blagovne znamke, in sicer BMW X5 xDrive40e. Po zaslugi stalnega sistema štirikolesnega pogona BMW xDrive in tehnologije eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics, združuje to športno terensko vozilo (SAV) vznemirljivo športno zmogljivost z izvrstno učinkovitostjo. Inteligentno upravljanje moči hibrida sinhronizira obratovanje motorja z notranjim zgorevanjem in elektromotorja, da v vsakem trenutku poveča učinkovitost, medtem ko se odlično odziva na voznikove zahteve. Pogonski moment iz obeh pogonskih enot se prenaša na cesto s pomočjo stalnega inteligentnega sistema štirikolesnega pogona BMW xDrive.

BMW serije 7: integralno aktivno krmiljenje združljivo z BMW xDrive.
V mesecu septembru 2015 je na mednarodnem avtomobilskem salonu v Frankfurtu svojo svetovno premiero doživela šesta generacija BMW serije 7. Najbolj luksuzna limuzina BMW, ki prinaša revolucionarne inovacije na vseh področjih, je z BMW xDrive na voljo od svojega prihoda na trg (oktober 2015). Nova luksuzna limuzina bo prav tako prvi model, ki bo omogočal kombinacijo inteligentnega sistema štirikolesnega pogona z integralnim aktivnim krmiljenjem, kar pomeni –pasivno krmiljenjem zadnjega kolesnega para.
