BMW Group South Africa ends production of the third-generation BMW X3 as over 400,000 vehicles roll off assembly line.

Rosslyn. BMW Group South Africa hails the end of an era as BMW Group Plant Rosslyn ended production of the third-generation BMW X3. On 28 August, the last vehicle of this model was produced, totalling the number of BMW X3 cars built to 403,114 units. This historic moment was celebrated by the organisation’s members of management and employees. The last vehicle – a now memorable Carbon Black BMW X3 – will be shipped to a customer in Germany.

At the heart of BMW Group South Africa’s operations since 1973, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn is a cornerstone of its global production network of more than 30 sites in 15 countries. It was the first plant established outside of Germany, building more than 1.7 million cars since its inception. In a key move, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn produced the BMW 3 Series for 35 years until 2018, manufacturing more than 1 million units, and increasing production with each model.

The culmination of 6 years of hard work.

In 2015, the BMW Group announced a R6 billion investment into South Africa by preparing BMW Group Plant Rosslyn for the production of the BMW X3 in 2018. The investment upgraded the facility into one of the most modern in the world, and placed it in line with the efficiency, sustainability and flexibility of BMW Group plants across globally.

BMW Group Plant Rosslyn has been producing the BMW X3 in a three-shift operation for South Africa and more than 50 African and global markets. Approximately 96% of the units produced at the plant are destined for export. With a planned maximum capacity of 76,000 units of the BMW X3, and additional investments, the plant can flexibly match volumes to demand and build more cars.

Since the start of local BMW X3 production in 2018, BMW Group South Africa has claimed segment leadership as the top-selling premium car brand in South Africa. There is steady growth in the popularity of the BMW X models, and the BMW X3 has become one the brand’s best-selling models. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn has proven itself to be an essential member of the BMW Group production network, consistently improving quality and productivity, and fashioning success.

General Manager of Assembly at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, Tshepo Khoza commented, “Having worked closely with the third-generation BMW X3, the last of its kind rolling off the production line was a particularly sentimental moment. While the BMW X3 has undergone several generational updates, each model has unique strengths, with the spirited driving dynamics of the BMW brand remaining consistent. The third generation stood out with a new range of more powerful and efficient engines. The new BMW X3 is yet another show of modernity and enhanced product substance.”

As one chapter ends, another begins.

In 2023, BMW Group South Africa announced R4.2 billion in investment to equip its Rosslyn plant to build the next-generation BMW X3 plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV). The investment is in line with BMW’s iFACTORY master plan for future production, marking a significant next-step in advancing the development of efficient, digitalised and resource-friendly production.

The new BMW X3 will be built at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg and Plant Rosslyn using a production process that prioritises the conservation of resources and circularity. Production will begin with the PHEV model, exclusively manufactured in Rosslyn for the world.

As of October 2024, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn will build the fourth-generation BMW X3, continuing the success story of the production of this model in South Africa, and securing the future of the plant for the next 50 years. This decision further ensures the livelihoods of more than 20,000 people directly and indirectly employed at BMW Group South Africa’s facilities and within its supply chain. More recently, plant employees have been trained for new tasks in a qualification programme for electromobility.

Authentic racing flair down to the last detail: BMW M Performance Parts for the new BMW X3.

Munich. The new BMW X3 is sportier and more versatile than ever as an all-rounder for everyday use, leisure and travel. In its fourth model generation, a new design language gives it a significantly enhanced presence. The M Sport Package and the M Sport Package Pro are available ex works for an even more elegant and sporty appearance. In addition, the distinctive profile of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) can be further customised with the BMW M Performance Parts, which will be available for the new BMW X3.

The model-specific retrofit products for the new BMW X3 are manufactured in a complex process from carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), high-strength aramid or high-gloss polyurethane and are perfectly matched to one another. All add-on parts from the original BMW accessories range perfectly match the geometry and monolithic appearance of the new BMW X3.

Confident appearance and optimised aerodynamic properties: M Performance front splitter.

The exterior components, which are precisely tailored to the new BMW X3, not only set individual accents of elegant sportiness, but also fulfil functional requirements in terms of lightweight construction and aerodynamics. In the fourth model generation, an M Performance front splitter is now available for the first time for the SAV. It complements the exterior features of the M Sport Package and emphasises the striking lines of the front apron. Finished in high-gloss black, the three-part front splitter gives the SAV a decidedly distinctive appearance, especially when combined with the M Performance front ornamental grille painted in the same colour.

The exclusive M Performance side decals in Frozen Black also emphasise the sporty character of the new BMW X3 from the side. The light-, weather- and wash-resistant decal set is perfectly adapted to the vehicle's geometry and makes a clear reference to motorsport. The M Performance Carbon fuel filler cap with M Performance lettering on brushed aluminium makes an unmistakable statement at the fuel station.

The striking M Carbon exterior mirror caps and the M Performance aerial cover in aramid are further accents that lend the profile of the new BMW X3 an individual and sporty touch. The aramid-reinforced plastic is very similar to carbon fibre, but offers greater electromagnetic permeability, ensuring unrestricted reception when making calls and using the many digital services available.

Striking sportiness: M Performance rear diffuser, M Performance roof edge spoiler and M Performance tailpipe trims.

The M Performance rear diffuser is also made from this high-tech material. It gives an even more striking appearance to the rear of the car, which is already characterised by its generous surfaces, and, in conjunction with the Comfort Access system, allows the luggage compartment lid to be opened and closed without the need for physical contact. An optional M Performance rear diffuser in high-gloss black polyurethane is also available for the new BMW X3. Both versions of the rear diffuser are combined with the M Performance rear bumper trim in high-gloss black.

The M Performance roof edge spoiler is also made of polyurethane and is finished in high-gloss black. Perfectly tailored to the design of the vehicle, it not only optimises the aerodynamic properties of the new BMW X3, but also adds a particularly dynamic touch to the rear of the vehicle. If desired, it can be painted in the colour of the vehicle.

The M Performance Carbon tailpipe trims integrated into the rear apron, which are available exclusively for the M Performance model BMW X3 M50 xDrive, give the SAV an especially powerful look (fuel consumption combined: 8.3 – 7.7 l/100 km (62 miles); CO₂ emissions combined: 189 – 175 g/km according to WLTP; CO₂ class(es) G-F). They were specially designed for the two pairs of tailpipes, which unmistakably identify the new BMW X3 M50 xDrive as the most powerful model in the series and bear an embossed M logo. Their CFRP coating, stainless steel inner tailpipes and thermal decoupling of the tailpipe are a testament to the highest quality standards.

The M model badge "X3" in high-gloss black on the rear of the new BMW X3 also sets an exclusive visual accent. The M model badge "M50" is also available in a high-gloss black finish for the M Performance model.

Up to 22-inch light alloy wheels are available for an even more exclusive look.

A further highlight in the range of accessories for the new BMW X3 are the weight-optimised 22-inch M Performance light-alloy wheels. The complete summer wheel set is available exclusively in Bicolour Jetblack matt finish. The Y-spoke light alloy wheels feature polished elements on the outer rim and centre for a particularly exclusive look.

In addition, 20-inch M Performance Y-spoke wheels in Jet Black Matt are available as both a summer and winter complete wheel set. Additional wheel sets are ideally stowed in the M Performance tyre bags. Reinforced bag handles make it easy to transport the wheels.

Precisely honed racing flair also for the interior.

As soon as the doors are opened, the M Performance Carbon door sills unmistakably signal the new BMW X3's dynamic orientation. With their distinctive M Performance lettering, they are an individual eye-catcher. Alternatively, M aluminium door sill trims are also available for the new edition of the SAV.

Authentic motorsport flair can also be found in the footwell of the new BMW X3 with the stainless steel M Performance pedal cover. The M Performance floor mats are the ideal complement. The four-piece set features embroidered M Performance lettering, leather-look edging, contrasting stitching and a stitched-in ribbon in BMW M colours. The M Performance locking button in black anodised aluminium with a coloured M logo ensures a harmonious style in the interior down to the last detail.

The M Performance key case, with its mix of Alcantara and carbon-look leather, also conveys a subtle hint of performance passion outside the vehicle. The custom-fit case protects the car key from scratches and has convenient cut-outs for all the function buttons.

Advanced, luxurious and for the first time available with an extended wheelbase: The new BMW X3 – exclusively from China for China.

Munich. BMW is adding another Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) to its range of models developed exclusively for the Chinese automotive market. The new version of the BMW X3, built in China for China, features an extended wheelbase for the first time, offering more legroom and a particularly comfortable driving experience in the rear. The luxurious interior of the new SAV for the premium mid-range vehicle segment is further enhanced by an extensive range of standard equipment with market-specific details. The new BMW iDrive is based on the BMW Operating System 9. It enables the use of numerous digital services that are exclusively available in China. The content of the BMW Digital Premium range is also tailored to the needs and requirements of Chinese customers.

The vehicle concept, design, technology and equipment were precisely tailored to the preferences of discerning target groups in China. Both models are produced at the Shenyang site. The Lydia plant there is the latest production facility of the BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) joint venture. It offers ideal conditions for high-quality, efficient and resource-conserving production.

Largest dimensions in the competitive environment, outstanding interior comfort.

The model variants of the new BMW X3 produced in Shenyang combine the clear, modern surface design of the brand's current design language with the typical proportions of BMW X models. The long roofline flows gently into the rear, creating a dynamically stretched silhouette. With an exterior length of 4,865 millimetres and a width of 1,920 millimetres, they have the most generous dimensions in the competitive environment. The new BMW X3 30L xDrive emphasises its sporty appearance with a higher proportion of black surfaces. Both models come with BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting for the BMW radiator grille as standard. A choice of six metallic paint finishes is available for the exterior, including the expressive Frozen finish.

The wheelbase of the new BMW X3 has been increased by 110 millimetres to 2,975 millimetres compared with the globally available model variants of the new BMW X3. The BMW Curved Display, the BMW Interaction Bar, the steering wheel with a flattened lower rim and the colour-contrasting lighting elements in the centre console and door panels create a modern ambience in a new style for the BMW X models. The standard Veganza sports seats with leather-like characteristics are available in three two-tone colours. The particularly high-quality "Crafted Clarity" glass applications for selected controls are available as an option. In addition to the extra legroom, the standard comfort cushions and centre armrest with integrated tray for wireless charging of suitable smartphones ensure exclusive comfort in the rear. Another highlight is the panoramic glass roof with optional skylounge lighting in several colours and modern graphic display, which complements the ambient lighting in the interior.

New BMW X3: Most successful SAV in China now even more attractive.

With its modern design, more space and advanced digitalisation based on the BMW Operating System 9, the new BMW X3 is ideally positioned to add a new chapter to the SAV success story in China. The predecessor model was the brand's best-selling vehicle worldwide in 2023. In China alone, around 156,000 units of the BMW X3 have been delivered to customers. This means that the premium mid-range SAV accounted for around 40 percent of all BMW X model sales in China.

Now in its fourth model generation, the BMW X3 produced in Shenyang is more than ever focused on the wishes of Chinese customers. Following in the footsteps of the locally produced BMW X1 and BMW X5, the new BMW X3 features an extended wheelbase and numerous market-specific equipment options. As a result, it is more attractive than ever and perfectly prepared for new successes in the world's largest automotive market.

BMW celebrates world premieres and motor sport anniversaries at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024.

Munich / Goodwood. The new BMW M5 (energy consumption weighted, combined: 1.7 – 1.6 l/100 km [166.2 – 176.6 mpg imp] and 25.5 – 25.0 kWh/100 km in the WLTP cycle; CO₂ emissions weighted, combined: 39 – 37 g/km in the WLTP cycle; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 10.3 – 10.2 l/100 km [27.4 – 27.7 mpg imp] in the WLTP cycle; CO₂ classes: weighted, combined B, with discharged battery: G) is ready to race, as it will demonstrate in the legendary hill climb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024. This storied event taking place in the English county of West Sussex is therefore the ideal occasion for the world premiere of the high-performance sedan in its seventh generation. The new BMW M5 will be making its first public appearance as part of a spectacular line-up of vehicles that also includes the BMW M Hybrid V8 prototype endurance racer, the new BMW M4 CS (fuel consumption, combined: 10.2 l/100 km [27.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 232 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO₂ class: G) and an array of classic machines from the motor sport history of BMW and BMW Motorrad.

With its M HYBRID system, the new BMW M5 is ideally equipped to post an impressive performance over the 1.86-kilometre (1.16-mile) hill climb. For the first time in the 40-year history of the high-performance sedan, an electrified drive system is on hand to provide instantaneous power development and imposing muscularity. The combination of a high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and the latest-generation electric motor generates system output of 535 kW/727 hp and peak torque of 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft). This fresh approach to delivering the performance profile for which M cars are renowned teams up with bespoke chassis technology and the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system to deliver a performance experience of rare magnetism and allure.

The new BMW M5 will be unveiled at BMW’s trackside stand on Thursday, 11 July 2024 as an early highlight of the four-day event. The new BMW X3 will also celebrate its world premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024. Now in its fourth model generation, the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) impresses not only with its visually striking design and innovative digital technology, but also with significantly enhanced agility and dynamic prowess. This increase in sporting appeal is embodied most prominently by the BMW X3 M50 xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 8.3 – 7.7 l/100 km [34.0 – 36.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 189 – 175 g/km in the WLTP cycle; CO₂ classes: G – F), which will be presented at the Festival of Speed. The new range-topping variant of the X3 – a model series first launched 20 years ago – is fitted with the most powerful six-cylinder in-line petrol engine ever assigned to an M Performance model. The 3.0-litre unit joins forces with 48V mild hybrid technology to produce maximum output of 293 kW/398 hp.

The Hill beckons: BMW lines up with new machinery, racing legends and famous drivers and riders.

The races up the famous hill in the Duke of Richmond’s Goodwood estate will provide the Festal of Speed programme with some spectacular highlights once again this year. Demo runs featuring cars and motorcycles from a wide range of eras bring to mind the private hill climb held for the first time in 1936 in the grounds of Goodwood House. Among the members of the current BMW M GmbH portfolio set to take the Hill by storm alongside the new BMW M5 are the special-edition BMW M4 CS and BMW XM Label Red (energy consumption weighted, combined: 2.0 – 1.6 l/100 km [141.2 – 176.6 mpg imp] and 33.5 – 32.5 kWh/100 km in the WLTP cycle; CO₂ emissions weighted, combined: 45 – 35 g/km in the WLTP cycle; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 12.9 – 12.3 l/100 km [21.9 – 23.0 mpg imp] in the WLTP cycle; CO₂ classes: weighted, combined B, with discharged battery: G). And the latest endurance racing car from BMW M Motorsport, the BMW M Hybrid V8, will also be let loose in the unfamiliar surroundings of a hill climb sprint.

BMW Group Classic’s historic motor sport department will also bring a host of legendary vehicles and well-known drivers and riders to the event. Leading the way will be the BMW V12 LMR, which celebrated overall victory in the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1999. Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, will get behind the wheel on the 25th anniversary of this famous win. 55 years have now passed since Dieter Quester was crowned European touring car champion in a BMW 2002 TIK. This was the first championship title claimed by a BMW with a turbocharged engine. Piloting the 2002 TIK in the hill climb at this year’s Festival of Speed will be BMW Group Classic brand ambassador Prince Leopold of Bavaria. And memories of great victories will also be rekindled for legendary BMW touring car driver Johnny Cecotto: 30 years on from winning the Super Touring Car Cup, he will be reunited with his BMW 318i STW at Goodwood.

BMW Group Classic will compete in the hill climb events for motorcycles with a pair of historic racing bikes. The BMW RS 54 from the 1950s will be joined by a meticulously restored replica of the BMW R 255/1 with supercharged engine. In 1939, Georg “Schorsch” Meier rode a R 255/1 to victory in the Senior Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man, becoming the first foreign rider to do so on a non-English bike. Among the riders lining up on these historic models will be Markus Flasch, Head of BMW Motorrad, who will also be piloting the BMW R20 concept through the twists and turns of the course. The latest concept bike from BMW Motorrad was unveiled to the public for the first time just a few weeks ago at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. Its design places the new 2.0-litre Big Boxer engine at centre stage, and the hill climb will now also provide it with the platform to showcase its power development and acoustic charms.

New models, one-off creations, concept cars and Vision Vehicles among the attractions at trackside.

Visitors to the Festival of Speed 2024 will be greeted by alluring examples of design, dynamism and innovation away from the track as well as on it. Among the models on show at the BMW M GmbH trackside stand will be the new BMW M135 xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 8.1 – 7.6 l/100 km [34.9 – 37.2 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 184 – 173 g/km in the WLTP cycle; CO₂ classes: G – F), the new BMW M2 (fuel consumption, combined: 10.2 – 9.6 l/100 km [27.7 – 29.4 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 231 – 218 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO₂ class: G) and the BMW M3 Touring (fuel consumption, combined: 10.4 – 10.3 l/100 km [27.2 – 27.4 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 235 – 233 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO₂ class: G).

In honour of designer Marcello Gandini, who passed away in spring this year, BMW Group Classic will also be presenting the BMW Garmisch. This coupé is a rebuild of a concept car that Gandini had designed for coachbuilder Bertone but that then vanished without trace following its premiere at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show.

The vehicles on display at the Stable Yard will also include the BMW Vision Neue Klasse – which offers a look ahead to the upcoming generation of fully electric models from BMW – and the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA, a one-off design whose exterior displays motifs from South African artist Esther Mahlangu using innovative colour-change technology. Also produced in just a single example so far, the BMW Concept Skytop has an exclusive blend of aesthetic appeal and dynamic potency. This design study is making only its second ever public appearance, following on from its world premiere at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. An open-top two-seater, the BMW Concept Skytop symbolises the joy of luxury travel. With design details recalling classic models like the BMW Z8 and BMW 503 and a super-powerful V8 from BMW’s current engine line-up, it bridges the past and the present in hallmark Festival of Speed style.

The fuel consumption, CO₂ emissions, electric power consumption and operating range figures are determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable. They refer to vehicles in the German market. Where a range is shown, the figures take into account the impact of any optional extras.

All values were calculated based on the new WLTP test cycle. WLTP values are taken as the basis for determining vehicle-related taxes or other duties based (at least inter alia) on CO₂ emissions as well as eligibility for any applicable vehicle-specific subsidies. O novo BMW X3 está mais versátil – e chega a Portugal no final do ano

A quarta geração do Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) na classe premium midsize aposta num novo design cuja presença exterior é agora mais arrojada. No interior, o uso de materiais de alta qualidade, equipamento de série aprimorado, digitalização avançada e o novo BMW iDrive com QuickSelect baseado no BMW Operating System 9, estabelecem um ambiente no habitáculo que combina conforto e elegância.

O design exterior do novo BMW X3 exibe proporções marcantes e superfícies generosas, com um aumento nas dimensões: comprimento de 4.755 mm, largura de 1.920 mm e uma altura reduzida para 1.660 mm, resultando numa aparência forte e desportiva. A nova grelha dianteira BMW, faróis LED adaptativos opcionais e acabamentos M Sport adicionais realçam ainda mais o seu visual arrojado.

Boasting greater sporting appeal, visual impact and versatility than ever, the new BMW X3 assumes the mantle of talented all-rounder for everyday use, leisure activities and trips away in the brand’s core segment. A new design language gives the fourth generation of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) for the premium midsize segment much enhanced exterior presence and an aura of dynamic grace. High-quality materials, a far more generous standard specification, advanced digitalisation and the new BMW iDrive with QuickSelect based on BMW Operating System 9 set the tone for the premium ambience inside the progressively designed cabin. Driving pleasure, safety and long-distance comfort in the new BMW X3 also all benefit from the exceptionally precise tuning of the overall vehicle setup and a wide selection of semi-automated driving and parking systems.

The new BMW X3 heralds major improvements in efficiency and dynamic performance with its wide-ranging model line-up. The portfolio of powertrains comprises not just highly efficient petrol and diesel engines, but also a latest-generation plug-in hybrid system that enables the new BMW X3 30e xDrive (consumption, weighted and combined: 24.0 – 22.3 kWh/100 km and 1.1 – 0.9 l/100 km [256.8 – 313.9 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, weighted and combined: 26 – 21 g/km in WLTP cycle; fuel consumption with battery empty: 7.9 – 7.2 l/100 km [35.8 – 39.2 mpg imp] in WLTP cycle; CO₂ classes: with battery empty G – F; weighted and combined B) to achieve an electric range of 81 – 90 kilometres (50 – 56 miles) in the WLTP cycle. With a hike in drive power to 293 kW/398 hp and dynamic performance capabilities to eclipse its rivals, the new BMW X3 M50 xDrive M Performance model (fuel consumption, combined: 8.3 – 7.7 l/ 100 km [34.0 – 36.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 189 – 175 g/km in WLTP cycle; CO₂ class(es) G – F) offers a compelling proposition.

The new edition’s aura of modernity and enhanced product substance provide the ideal basis for adding another chapter to the BMW X3 success story – one that first began 20 years ago. Since first establishing the SAV segment in the premium midsize class, it has been instrumental in the steady growth in popularity of the BMW X models and, indeed, became the brand’s best-selling model in 2023. The new BMW X3 will be built at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg (USA) and Plant Rosslyn (South Africa) using a production process focused on conserving resources and circularity. Its market launch will get underway in Europe and the USA in the fourth quarter of 2024, progressing across numerous other markets from January 2025.

New design language shines the spotlight on distinctive proportions.

A new design language for the exterior helps to give the fourth generation of the BMW X3 an almost monolithic overall appearance with distinctive BMW X model proportions. Generously proportioned surfaces combine with just a few, crisply defined lines to produce a clearly structured exterior that has been reduced to the essentials. The new BMW X3 is 34 millimetres longer than its predecessor at 4,755 millimetres, while width has increased by 29 millimetres to 1,920 millimetres. Together with the 25‑millimetre drop in vehicle height to 1,660 millimetres and the wider tracks, this produces a very powerful and sporty look.

The large BMW kidney grille in the upright front end of the new BMW X3 gives off an air of assured presence. A new structure for the grille interior, comprising vertically and diagonally arranged bars, adds a fresh touch. The optional BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting forms a continuous line around each element of the grille. The daytime driving lights, side lights and turn signal indicators in the LED headlights are now all produced by L-shaped, overlapping light sources. Adaptive LED Headlights with non-dazzling matrix high beam, urban light and cornering light functions, plus blue design detailing are optionally available, as are M Shadowline lights.

Bold side skirts and a roofline extending deep into the rear end are the distinguishing features of the new model’s sporty silhouette. The prominently flared wheel arches create the impression of considerable width at the rear. The flush-mounted rear window is bordered by a long roof spoiler and the adjoining side air deflectors. All model variants aside from the BMW X3 M50 xDrive come with exhaust tailpipes integrated out of sight in the rear apron. The fresh interpretation of the characteristic T-shaped graphic and a satinated horizontal bar with integral turn signal indicators help to give the rear lights a very modern appearance.

There is a choice of one solid and eight metallic shades for the exterior paintwork of the new BMW X3, including the new Dune Grey metallic finish. Models produced at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg will additionally be available with BMW Individual paint finishes, including two matt shimmering Frozen options, as well as over 15 BMW Individual special paint finishes.

The new BMW X3 is equipped as standard with light-alloy wheels measuring 18 inches in size (BMW X3 30e xDrive: 19 inches), with a selection of 20-inch and 21-inch items also available as factory-fitted options. The optional M Sport package creates an exceptionally dynamic look with features such as 19-inch M light-alloy wheels and bespoke design cues for optimising airflow and aerodynamic balance. The M Sport package Pro builds on this content by adding, among other things, the Iconic Glow contour lighting and M Sport brakes with red-painted callipers.

Sporty premium ambience and generous amounts of space.

The cabin of the new BMW X3 blends robust SAV functionality with ample spaciousness and a premium ambience full of individual style. The BMW Curved Display, BMW Interaction Bar, steering wheels with a flat-bottomed rim and the new-look gear selector lever are the defining elements of the cockpit’s modern take on hallmark BMW driver-focused design. Other model-specific highlights include light elements in a contrasting colour in the centre console and door trims. This new design feature is located towards the front of the driver’s and front passenger doors, where it forms a border around function buttons, ventilation controllers, air vents and the robust door openers typically found on BMW X models.

The interior’s individual ambience goes hand in hand with generous amounts of space and modern versatility. Load space can be increased from 570 to a maximum 1,700 litres (BMW X3 30e xDrive: 460 – 1,600 litres). A trailer coupling that extends and retracts again electrically can be specified as an option. The maximum permitted trailer load is 2,500 kilograms, depending on the model variant.

The new BMW X3 is fitted as standard with newly designed electrically adjustable and heated sport seats upholstered in Econeer, with surfaces and cushioning made from secondary material. Veganza and BMW Individual Merino leather upholsteries are both available as an option. Making its debut for a BMW model is the optional Luxury instrument panel made from recycled polyester with a high-class knitted texture.

Plug-in hybrid with significantly longer electric range.

The drive system in the BMW X3 30e xDrive plug-in hybrid is made up of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine partnered with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. These join forces to generate system output of up to 220 kW/299 hp.

Helped by latest-generation BMW eDrive technology and adaptive recuperation, the new BMW X3 30e xDrive achieves an electric range of 81 – 90 kilometres (50 – 56 miles) in the WLTP cycle, which is considerably longer than its predecessor could offer. Its Combined Charging Unit enables AC charging at 11 kW as standard. The plug-in-hybrid model also comes prepared for smart charging with the Connected Home Charging option.

BMW X3 M50 xDrive with standout performance qualities.

The range-topping model, the new BMW X3 M50 xDrive, features the most powerful six-cylinder in-line petrol engine yet fitted in an M Performance model. The 3.0-litre M TwinPower Turbo unit links up with 48V mild hybrid technology. Its maximum output of 293 kW/398 hp is channelled to the road via an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. The BMW X3 M50 xDrive powers to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in 4.6 seconds.

This stunningly potent powertrain combines with the bespoke chassis technology to deliver a compelling blend of agility, dynamism and handling precision. M Sport suspension with variable sport steering, M Sport brakes, 20-inch M light-alloy wheels and an M Sport differential integrated into the rear axle all come as standard. There is also the option of adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers. M-specific design features, the M kidney grille with horizontal bars and BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting, and the quartet of exhaust tailpipes all serve to underline the status of the BMW M model as the most powerful version of the new BMW X3.

Systematic electrification for petrol and diesel engines, eight-speed Steptronic transmission and BMW xDrive all-wheel drive as standard.

48V mild hybrid technology also endows all other variants of the new BMW X3 with enhanced efficiency and rapid power delivery. It enables the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit in the new BMW X3 20 xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 7.6 – 6.9 l/100 km [37.2 – 40.9 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 172 – 156 g/km in WLTP cycle; CO₂ class: F) to generate maximum output of 153 kW/208 hp. This translates into a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of 7.8 seconds.

The four-cylinder diesel engine, also with a displacement of 2.0 litres, under the bonnet of the new BMW X3 20d xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 6.5 – 5.8 l/100 km [43.5 – 48.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 171 – 153 g/km in WLTP cycle; CO₂ classes: F – E) posts maximum output of 145 kW/197 hp. The diesel model completes the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in 7.7 seconds. A six-cylinder in-line diesel engine will be added to the line-up for the new BMW X3 in summer 2025.

All the power units link up with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission including shift paddles on the steering wheel as standard. There is also a Sport Boost function for exceptionally rapid bursts of speed in models specified with the M Sport package and in the new BMW X3 M50 xDrive. All model variants also benefit from fully variable distribution of drive power via the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system as standard.

Agility and ride comfort up their game.

All model variants of the new BMW X3 boast driving qualities offering a clearly noticeable increase in agility, cornering stability and long-distance comfort over the outgoing model. A body with lower weight but increased rigidity and the wider rear track both play a role here, as do the high-quality chassis components and control systems tuned for this specific model. Modifications to the kinematic and elastokinematic properties of the double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle have increased precision when turning into corners, while the 19 per cent increase in the caster offset of the steering axle is a boon for straight-line stability. Near-actuator wheel slip limitation and the integrated braking system likewise form part of the standard package of chassis technology.

Customers looking for even more dynamic prowess can choose the optional M Sport suspension including sport steering and M Sport brakes (both standard for the new BMW X3 M50 xDrive). Adaptive suspension – also to be found on the options list – sharpens the agility of the new BMW X3 at the same time as increasing ride comfort.

Driving Assistant and Parking Assistant as standard.

The new BMW X3 offers a far more extensive range of standard and optional systems for semi-automated driving and parking. It is equipped as standard with front collision warning, Lane Departure Warning and Speed Limit Info, along with the Driving Assistant including Lane Change Warning and manual Speed Limit Assist. The Parking Assistant (also standard) incorporates features such as the Reversing Assistant and a Reversing Assist Camera.

Among the highlights on the list of optional systems are the Steering and Lane Control Assistant, as well as automatic Speed Limit Assist and route speed control when using Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function. The optional Parking Assistant Professional allows parking and general manoeuvres to be controlled from outside the car using a smartphone.

More generous standard specification for greater comfort and driving pleasure.

Besides the extra assistance systems, the far more generous standard specification compared to the outgoing model offers a wealth of other features that help boost comfort and driving pleasure in the new BMW X3. These include three-zone automatic climate control, acoustic glazing, Comfort Access, automatic tailgate operation, an electric folding mechanism for the exterior mirrors, an alarm system and BMW Live Cockpit Plus complete with the cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system. The new BMW X3 also comes as standard with ambient lighting featuring a Welcome and Goodbye Animation, a tray including wireless charging function for compatible smartphones, a Bluetooth interface, four USB-C ports, a 12V power socket in the centre console and another in the luggage compartment.

The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional adds not only the BMW Head-Up Display, but also the Augmented View function in the control display. In addition to this, new equipment packages are available for targeted customisation of the car. The Premium Package features lumbar support, the Harman Kardon surround sound system, the Travel & Comfort System and Adaptive LED Headlights. And the Comfort Package adds sun blinds for the rear side windows, active seat ventilation in the front and seat heating in the rear. Also to be found on the options list are a fixed panoramic glass sunroof featuring a large transparent surface without any cross struts to break it up, steering wheel heating, sun protection glass in the rear and a pre-heating function. The new BMW X3 30e xDrive, meanwhile, comes with the BMW IconicSounds Electric for special sound effects.

BMW Operating System 9, BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Digital Premium.

The new BMW X3 comes with the latest version of BMW iDrive with QuickSelect to provide intuitive, easy control. Its new home screen shows vertically arranged function icons on the same level. The QuickSelect feature allows functions to be activated directly without having to enter a submenu. The new BMW iDrive is geared squarely to touch and voice control. It is based on BMW Operating System 9, which also paves the way for a customisable selection of additional digital services. These can be made available over the air, both via the BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades facility and thanks to an ever-expanding variety of third-party apps offered as part of the optional BMW Digital Premium package.

BMW Digital Premium allows in-car use of the specific apps available in each country on a subscription basis. Besides music streaming, the portfolio includes a wide choice of video streaming options (DTS AutoStage Video Service powered by TiVo™) on the control display too. The video app in the new BMW X3 therefore offers customers a large number of media libraries and streaming services. The range of in-car gaming with the AirConsole game platform also includes the popular quiz “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”. BMW Digital Premium additionally covers the necessary data usage for the featured digital services. This option also expands the functions of the navigation system and the selection of both My Modes and lighting effects for the Welcome and Goodbye Animation. In certain countries, BMW Digital Premium also allows digital payment of parking fees from the comfort of the vehicle.

Smartphone integration using Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ is available as standard. The BMW ID and My BMW App make it easy to personalise the user experience in the new BMW X3. There is also the option of using the My BMW App to set up the BMW Digital Key Plus with ultra-wideband radio technology for compatible smartphones running iOS or Android or for an Apple Watch.

Munich/Miramas. At the end of series development, the new BMW X3 undergoes final tuning of all chassis control and driver assistance systems at the BMW Group test centre in Miramas, southern France. The fourth generation of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) in the premium mid-range vehicle segment will be presented in a few weeks' time with both highly efficient combustion engines and an advanced plug-in hybrid drive. The development and test engineers ensure that all model variants of the new BMW X3, regardless of drive concept and weight, demonstrate superior handling in every situation with an intensive tuning programme. The well-coordinated functionality of all automated driving and parking systems in the new BMW X3 also contributes to a harmonious customer experience.

The new BMW X3 has already undergone extensive testing on snow and ice, in extremely hot regions and off-road on its way to series production. The SAV's suitability for everyday use and travelling was tested and refined in urban stop-and-go traffic as well as on winding country roads, highways and selected race tracks.

Perfectly coordinated systems for a typical BMW driving experience.

The development engineers use the versatile test track in Miramas to put the finishing touches to the driving experience of the new BMW X3. In addition to an asphalt oval and a highway ring, there are also slalom, serpentine and circular tracks as well as off-road courses and handling courses with different road surfaces. This allows the longitudinal and lateral acceleration, suspension and damping, steering precision and braking behaviour of the new BMW X3 to be analysed and optimised down to the last detail.

The driving dynamics and efficiency of the new BMW X3 benefit from intelligent lightweight construction and optimised aerodynamic properties. With a drag coefficient (C_d) of 0.27, it sets new standards in its competitive environment.

Compared to its predecessor, the new BMW X3 also has a wider track and reduced lift at the rear axle. In addition, the rigidity of the body and the chassis connection has been increased. Targeted improvements to the kinematics and elastokinematics of both axles, combined with a 19 per cent increase in the caster of the front wheels, ensure noticeably improved directional stability. A more direct steering ratio enhances steering comfort, while extensively modified anti-roll bars improve cornering dynamics without compromising ride comfort.

An Adaptive Chassis with electronically controlled shock absorbers is available as an option for the new BMW X3. The final tuning is part of the driving dynamics test at Miramas and offers two maps that can be selected via My Modes. In addition, the new version of the SAV comes as standard with the latest version of BMW Lateral Dynamics Management, which ensures precise control of the required steering torques, the actuator-based wheel slip limitation and the yaw torque distribution of Performance Control, adapted to the driving situation at all times.

Thanks to BMW's unique development expertise, all components and systems of the drive and chassis technology are perfectly matched. The result is the characteristic combination of precision, sovereignty and versatility that characterises the driving experience in a BMW SAV.

Automated driving is also optimised by BMW's typical level of integration.

The new BMW X3 features the latest BMW iDrive based on the BMW Operating System 9 including BMW iDrive Controller and offers a significantly expanded selection of systems for automated driving and parking compared to the predecessor model. With its standard equipment, it clearly exceeds the requirements of the Euro NCAP safety test. The particularly sensitive braking and steering interventions of the assistance systems compared to the competition are another example of the unique integration performance of BMW riving dynamics development. They enable harmonious interaction between driver and vehicle in every situation.

The outstanding functionality of all assistance systems is based on state-of-the-art sensor technology as well as software, processor and network technology. Highlights in the new BMW X3 include the Active Lane Change Assistant and the Parking and Manoeuvre Assistant, which allows the driver to control manoeuvres from outside the vehicle using a smartphone.

BMW continues run of success, taking top spot in numerous international competitions once again in 2023.

Munich. With a brace of victories in the “Best Cars” competition, BMW has backed up its successful end to 2023 with a similarly fruitful beginning to 2024. The BMW 2 Series Coupé wrapped up class victory in the compact segment for the third time in succession, while the BMW X1 led the way in the “compact SUV” category. The “Best Cars” award – voted on by readers of German motoring magazine “auto, motor und sport” and in its 48th edition this year – is one of the most prestigious in the European automotive industry. Almost 100,000 respondents took part in the survey, selecting one overall winner and one “imported car” champion from a field of 455 models across 13 vehicle categories.

The start of 2024 was also marked by class victory for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan in the “Large Car” category of the “Women's Worldwide Car of the Year” award. 75 female automotive journalists from 52 countries picked out their favourites from a total of 62 vehicles in five categories. Intended to showcase the influence of women in the automotive industry and presented for the 14th time this year, this prize takes into account factors such as safety, quality, price, design, ride comfort, everyday usability and environmental impact. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan won over the jury members with its electrified drive system line-up (including the fully electric BMW i5), as well as its spaciousness, advanced technology and now fully vegan interior.

This successful beginning to the year saw BMW building on its run of success in a large number of awards in 2023. Models from the premium brand’s current range claimed numerous prizes in both its home market of Germany and its most important sales regions internationally. The winners stretched across all the relevant categories, with compact models, luxury vehicles and high-performance sports cars from BMW M GmbH all making waves. As well as vehicles powered by combustion engines, the readers and juries also recognised a strikingly high number of representatives from BMW’s constantly expanding electric mobility range.

“We’re very proud that our various BMW vehicles have won awards in so many national and international competitions. This also shows that we have attractive models in all segments that excite people,” says Jochen Goller, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Customer, Brands, Sales. “The response to our models with all-electric drive systems is particularly pleasing. Newcomer to the ranks of high-performance models and a fully electric Sports Activity Vehicle both win a “Golden Steering Wheel”.

The “Golden Steering Wheel” presented by German publications “Auto Bild” and “Bild am Sonntag” is one of the most prestigious distinctions in the European car industry. BMW took two of these coveted trophies back to Munich in 2023. The BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 10.4 – 10.1 l/100 km [27.2 – 28.0 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 235 – 229 g/km in the WLTP cycle) ranked first in the “sports cars” category and the fully electric BMW iX1 topped the “compact class”.

Both models added a string of other international awards to their collections over the course of 2023. For example, the first ever BMW M3 Touring – which combines the dynamic prowess of a high-performance car with impressive levels of practicality – was elected sports car of the year in the category for vehicles costing up to 120,000 euros by readers of “Auto Bild Sportscars” magazine. And acclaimed British TV programme “Top Gear” honoured the BMW M GmbH newcomer with the title “All The Car You'll Ever Need” in its “Car of the Year” awards.

The BMW iX1 collected a trio of awards in China, including “All-Electric Premium SUV of the Year”. It also won the French “Automobile Award 2023” in the “Green Tech” category and the “autonis Award” bestowed by readers of “auto, motor und sport” to the year’s most attractive new design.

Fully electric BMW i5 enjoys immediate success around the world.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan and BMW i5 also claimed an “autonis” prize. Now also available with a fully electric drive system for the first time, the new edition of the world’s most successful business sedan was also named “Car of the Year” by Portuguese magazine “Frontline”. The BMW i5 was also presented with equivalent awards in Norway and Denmark, both particularly important markets for electric vehicles. Norwegian daily “Dagbladet” teamed up with online portals “DinSide” and “Elbi24” to celebrate the BMW i5. While in Denmark, the i5 fought off competition from six other models to gain the most votes for “Car of the Year” in a final round made up exclusively of fully electric models. The jury of 20 Danish motoring journalists chose the BMW i5 as their winner by a large margin.

Chinese publication “Auto World” crowned the BMW i5 as “Most Anticipated Premium Executive Sedan of the Year”, and the fully electric business sedan also collected three awards in Great Britain: “The Car Expert” put the BMW i5 in top spot in its “Best Large Car Award”, it was named “Premium Car of the Year” in the “2024 Electrifying.com Awards” and the “Comfortable Cruiser” topped its class in Carwow’s “Car of the Year Awards 2024”.

The awards underscore the ability of the new BMW i5 Sedan to win people over with numerous different qualities: from character-rich design, a unique balance between sportiness and comfort, innovative equipment features and progressive digital services to a drive system whose power is matched by its capability over long distances. And it also uses latest-generation BMW eDrive technology to transfer the brand’s signature dynamic ability to the road with zero local emissions. In addition, adaptive recuperation and an intelligent combination of heat pump technology for heating and cooling the interior, drive system and high-voltage battery help to give the BMW i5 eDrive40 Sedan (electric power consumption, combined: 18.9 – 15.9 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) a range of 498 – 582 kilometres (309 – 362 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

BMW’s electric mobility offensive is recognised with awards.

The BMW brand’s fully electric model line-up as a whole enjoyed a successful year worldwide in 2023. As well as the BMW iX1 and BMW i5, this was particularly true of the BMW i7 and BMW i4. In Great Britain alone, these two models were both among the winners in seven awards. Both won the “Auto Express New Car Award” in their respective vehicle classes. The BMW i4 also claimed the “Pocket-lint Award” and “Business Car Award”, and the BMW i7 celebrated success in both the “What Car? Electric Car Awards” and the “What Car? Car of the Year Awards”. The fully electric luxury sedan racked up five prizes in China, too, including the “Car of the Year” distinction from leading online magazine “sohu.com”.

There was also much to celebrate in France and the USA, where the BMW i7 was given the “Best Overall and Best Value” rating from “Money” magazine and praised by “wards auto” magazine for its standout luxury ambience and digital user experience with BMW Theatre Screen in the rear compartment. Renowned US magazine “car and driver” named both the BMW i4 M50 (electric power consumption, combined: 22.5 – 18.0 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) and BMW i4 eDrive40 M50 (electric power consumption, combined: 19.1 – 16.1 kWh/ 100 km in the WLTP cycle) among the “Best 10” of 2023.

Top marks and distinctions for the BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series ranges, the BMW M2 and the BMW X3.

BMW set the seal on a successful year in Germany with a two-pronged triumph. The BMW 3 Series and BMW X3 closed out 2023 with class victory in the coveted “Auto Trophy”. The BMW 3 Series Sedan and BMW 3 Series Touring, for example, took clear victories in the hotly contested midsize segment of the readers’ survey conducted by German title “Auto Zeitung”, racking up 19.0 per cent of the vote. This was the seventh class win in a row for the 3 Series. Meanwhile, the rugged aura, interior spaciousness and commitment to electrification of the BMW X3 helped it account for 15.3 per cent of the votes cast and therefore the highest points total in the high-volume vehicle segment of “SUVs costing 30,000 – 60,000 euros”.

The BMW 3 Series was a particularly prolific award-winner in Great Britain. In the “Business Car Awards”, the 3 Series won the “Best Premium Car” prize, and it also gained entry to the “Hall of Fame” of “Fleet News” magazine as the “Most Reliable Company Car”. The BMW 3 Series won twice in the “What Car? Used Car Awards”, topping both the “Used Executive Car” category and overall “Used Car of the Year”. And then there was the “Best Used Hybrid Executive Car” distinction for the BMW 330e Sedan (fuel consumption, combined: 1.9 – 1.4 l/100 km [148.7 – 201.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption, combined 20.1 – 18.1 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 43 – 32 g/km in the WLTP cycle). The plug-in hybrid model also tasted success in the USA, where “Money” magazine described it as “Best for Handling”.

Adding to the wave of success enjoyed by the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 4 Series – with its standout sporting appeal – also enriched the brand’s glittering international reputation in the premium midsize segment. The best example of this came in the BMW 4 Series Coupé and BMW 4 Series Convertible’s showing in the “What Car? Car of the Year Awards” in Great Britain. The closed-roof two-door won the “Coupe of the Year” for the third year in succession in 2023. And this year its open-top sister model also won the “Convertible of the Year” award.

Two other British awards were claimed by the BMW M2. It was voted “Best Performance Car” in “The Car Expert Awards”, and the compact high-performance sports car also took the title of “Performance Car of the Year” in the “Auto Express New Car Awards”.

BMW M GmbH enters its anniversary year with a new sales high.

Munich. For the third time in a row, BMW M GmbH ended the financial year as the global market leader in the performance and high-performance car segment. Indeed, the company posted record sales once again in 2021. A total of 163,542 BMW M cars were delivered to customers worldwide last year, a 13 percent increase on 2020.

This growth was spread equally between the High-Performance sports cars and Performance cars made by BMW M GmbH, with both product categories raising their sales figures to a new level. “This success is the perfect start to our anniversary year,” says Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH. “M is in a stronger position than ever as it celebrates its 50th birthday.”

New BMW M3 and new BMW M4 enjoy immediate success.

The biggest drivers of growth among the High-Performance sports cars were the new BMW M3 and BMW M4 models introduced in spring 2021. Fuelled by a vehicle concept focused squarely on emotionally charged dynamism and unprecedented diversity in the model range, the new BMW M3 Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 10.2 – 10.0 l/100 km [27.7 – 28.3 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 231 – 227 g/km as per WLTP), new BMW M4 Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 10.1 – 9.9 l/100 km [28.0 – 28.5 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 230 – 226 g/km as per WLTP) and new BMW M4 Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 10.2 l/100 km [27.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 233 – 231 g/km as per WLTP) got off to an extremely successful start. The latest model generation is the first to offer customers two output levels topping out at 375 kW/510 hp, the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and a choice of either a six-speed manual gearbox or the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.

“The response to the new generation of the BMW M3 and BMW M4 has been simply overwhelming,” reports Timo Resch, Vice President Customer, Brand and Sales at BMW M GmbH. “We can therefore expect demand for these iconic sports cars to continue on an upward curve in 2022.”

Also making a powerful contribution to the latest rise in High-Performance model sales at BMW M GmbH were the BMW X5 M Competition (fuel consumption combined: 13.6 – 13.3 l/100 km [20.8 – 21,2 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 308 – 303 g/km as per WLTP) and BMW X6 M Competition (fuel consumption combined: 13.4 – 13.1 l/100 km [21.1 – 21.6 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 305 – 299 g/km as per WLTP). Following the successful market launch of the latest model generation the previous year, the charismatic High-Performance sports cars in the Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupé segment – both powered by a 460 kW/625 hp V8 engine – increased their sales figures once again in 2021.

Alluring and in demand: the BMW M models in the BMW 4 Series range.

The dynamic excellence, agility and precision for which M is renowned also enabled the brand’s Performance models to delight and excite a wide range of customers over the past year. Credit for the latest boost to sales goes above all to the M models based on the new BMW 4 Series. Particularly popular were the variants of the new BMW 4 Series Coupé, whose line-up consists of the BMW M440i Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 8.1 – 7.4 l/100 km [34.8 – 38.2 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 184 – 167 g/km as per WLTP) and BMW M440i xDrive Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 8.2 – 7.5 l/100 km [34.5 – 37.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 186 – 170 g/km as per WLTP) powered by a 275 kW/374 hp six-cylinder in-line petrol engine, and the BMW M440d xDrive Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 6.3 – 5.7 l/100 km [44.8 – 49.6 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 165 – 150 g/km as per WLTP), whose six-cylinder in-line diesel unit produces 250 kW/340 hp.

The latest BMW X models within the ranks of M’s Performance cars also proved extremely desirable. Indeed, the BMW X3 M40i powered by a six-cylinder in-line engine with 265 kW/360 hp (fuel consumption combined: 9.5 – 8.8 l/100 km [29.7 – 32.1 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 216 – 199 g/km as per WLTP) and the BMW X7 M50i (fuel consumption combined: 12.8 – 12.3 l/100 km [22.1 – 23.0 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 292 – 280 g/km as per WLTP) with its 390 kW/530 hp V8 unit both posted an increase in new registrations.

Looking ahead to an anniversary year brimming with highlights.

BMW M GmbH will continue its product offensive in this anniversary year with the addition of new High-Performance and Performance models. Highlights include the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 8.8 – 8.1 l/100 km [32.1 – 34.9 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 200 – 185 g/km as per WLTP) and the arrival later in the year of the first BMW M3 Touring and an exclusive special-edition model based on the new BMW M4 Coupé.

In addition, the BMW Group subsidiary – which was founded as BMW Motorsport GmbH in May 1972 and enjoys the status of an independent manufacturer – will also drive the transformation to electric mobility. Following in the tyre tracks of the BMW i4 M50 (electric power consumption combined: 22.5 – 18.0 kWh/100 km as per WLTP; CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km) in the first half of 2022 will be the likewise fully electric BMW iX M60 (projected electric power consumption combined: 24.7 – 21.7 kWh/100 km as per WLTP; CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km).

The most powerful BMW M model ever made points the way to the future of the brand.

The anniversary year will be crowned by the start of production of the BMW XM. The most powerful BMW M car ever to go into series production is also the brand’s first High-Performance model to employ a plug-in hybrid drive system. Its newly developed M Hybrid technology brings together a V8 engine and a high-performance electric motor to develop maximum output of 550 kW/750 hp and peak torque of 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft). The design of the BMW XM majors on presence and extrovert appeal and in so doing sends out a clear statement in the luxury segment.

The new BMW X3 and the new BMW X4.

Sportier, more modern and more digital. For the second phase of the model cycle, BMW has refreshed its successful Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) BMW and the Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) BMW with a new look, improved equipment and a range structure which has been optimised for customers. The redesigned front end and revised rear section lend even clearer emphasis to the robust off-road look and sporty appearance of the third-generation BMW X3. Its coupé counterpart, the second-generation BMW X4, adopts the new front end, adds its own accentuation with the exclusive BMW mesh kidney grille and offers a particularly dynamic rear end. The refresh is rounded off with a modern interior with new equipment features and updated infotainment. BMW M GmbH is also upgrading the M models of the BMW X3 and BMW X4 at the same time (see here).

Modern drive technology and a clearer product structure.
The introduction of mild hybrid technology with 48-‑volt‑starter generator now also with all petrol engines ensures a broad drive portfolio at the cutting edge of technology. These include the BMW X3 xDrive30e (combined fuel consumption, weighted: 2.6 – 2.0 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined power consumption, weighted: 20.5 – 18.9 kWh/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂ emissions, weighted: 59 – 45 g/km according to WLTP) and, at the top of the range, particularly high-performance petrol and diesel models from BMW M GmbH. In Germany, all BMW X3 and BMW X4 are fitted with the all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive as standard. A new range structure ensures a greater focus on sportiness and “X-ness” as well as enhanced clarity through deliberate reduction. The M sports package and the familiar M variants are available as an alternative to the standard equipment enriched with high-quality X elements. The market launch will get underway in summer 2021, following the start of production at the Spartanburg plant (USA) in August 2021. The new BMW X3 and the new BMW X4 are due to see their world premiere at the Chengdu Motor Show in China (27 August to 5 September), while the European premiere will take place at the IAA in Munich (7 to 12 September).

BMW X3 with classic X elements and sporty genes.
The new BMW X3 has a more modern appearance that conveys a more powerful presence, with design changes to the front and rear and an emphasis on classic X‑elements. The BMW kidney grille and headlights have been redesigned along with the front apron and rear bumper, while new graphics have been applied to the rear lights. High-quality X elements such as underbody protection and specific side skirts in the style of the previous X Line are already standard. The sporty genes of the Sports Activity Vehicle are underlined by the M sports package and the BMW X3 M40i (combined fuel consumption: 9.5 – 8.8 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂‑emissions: 216 – 199 g/km according to WLTP) and the BMW X3 M40d (combined fuel consumption: 7.3 – 6.6 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂‑emissions: 192 – 173 g/km according to WLTP).

New BMW kidney grille and flatter headlights.
With the redesigned BMW kidney grille, headlights that are around ten millimetres flatter and the new front apron, the BMW X3 looks almost like a new vehicle. More strikingly shaped, especially in the upper area, the BMW kidney grille is larger than before and now comprises a single-piece frame. A black bar in which the iCam is positioned if fitted ensures visual separation of the grille. The front headlights feature full LED technology as standard. In addition to the optional adaptive LED headlights with Matrix function, where the adverse weather light takes on the function of the previously separate fog lights, the BMW Laser Light with a range of up to 650 metres is now also available as an optional extra.

Front apron and rear apron redesigned.
Below the headlights, vertical air intakes arranged in a triangular interpretation frame the front bumper. In the new front apron, taut and amply-sized surfaces in body colour and the robust underbody protection reinforce the presence and high-quality aura of the SAV. The BMW X3 xDrive30e with plug-in hybrid drive also bears an “electrified by i” emblem on the front wing, while an additional blue ring adorns all BMW logos on this engine version, including those on the wheel hub covers. The rear section of the new BMW X3 offers greater clarity as a result of various measures. A black border gives the full LED rear lights a more precise appearance, while the narrower light graphic now includes a three-dimensionally modelled pincer contour and horizontal turn signals integrated in filigree style. The emphasis on horizontal lines, for example in the concave area at the lower end of the tailgate, contributes to the tidy impression of the rear. The newly designed and elaborately painted underbody protection provides a powerful finish to the road. The new, flush-fitting free-form tailpipe trims are larger and sportier, conveying a more powerful presence.

M sports package with specific exterior details.
The M sports package gives the BMW X3 a sportier orientation. The specific front apron features significantly larger air inlets and inserts finished in high-gloss black, as well as more pronounced air curtains. The window graphics, roof rails and BMW kidney frame and bars are optionally available in high-gloss black. The sportier rear bumper includes a more striking diffuser finished in Dark Shadow along with two additional side air‑curtain‑panels in high-gloss black. The standard trim includes the new 19-inch Y‑Spoke 887M alloy wheel in Midnight Grey Bicolor with 245/50 R19 tyres. Additional wheels in 20 inch and 21 inch are available as an option, as well as the M sports brake with blue or red brake calipers.

Further visual differentiation is offered by the BMW X3 M40i and the BMW X3 M40d, which show their affiliation to the BMW M GmbH portfolio with a specific BMW M kidney. In addition to a chrome frame, it bears the typical M double grille bars in high-gloss black and with an M logo. While the same aprons as in the M sports package are to be found at the front and rear, the aerodynamically optimised M exterior mirrors in high-gloss black, the free-form tailpipe trims in black chrome and the striking “Two Teeth” design ensure a distinctive look. The BMW X3 M40i and BMW X3 M40d are fitted as standard with 20‑inch M light alloy wheels double-spoke 699M in Orbit Grey with the mixed tyres 245/45 R20 at the front and 275/40 R20 at the rear. As an optional extra, these wheels are available in Jet Black, while other exclusive options include the 21-inch M light alloy wheels double spoke 718M in Jet Black burnished.

BMW mesh kidney grille as an exclusive distinguishing feature of the BMW X4.
The BMW X4 adopts the new front end of the BMW X3, but adds an exclusive distinguishing feature in the form of the mesh kidney familiar from other sporty BMW models. Compared to the BMW X3, the adaptive LED headlights with Matrix function are already standard, while the BMW Laser Light, which is particularly light-intensive and has a long range, is also available as an option for the BMW X4. Featuring flat full LED rear lights that emphasise the vehicle width and protrude strikingly from the vehicle body in their three-dimensional design, the rear section now has an even more clear-cut shape in the BMW X4 revision. The new rear apron has a tidier appearance, with an increased proportion of painted surface and reflectors now placed vertically and lower in the bumper. The wide free-form tailpipe trims echo the horizontal lines of the upper section.

M sports package with striking rear apron in the BMW X4.
From the M sports package onwards, the BMW X4 features the BMW mesh kidney, the frame and inserts of which are painted in high‑gloss black on request, as well as a new rear apron with a wide, offset insert in the shape of an anvil. Like the side air‑curtain‑panels, this is finished in high-gloss black and gives a powerful overall impression that is distinctly road-oriented. As with the BMW X3, the M sports package includes the new 19-inch alloy wheel Y‑-Spoke 887M in Midnight Grey Bicolor with 245/50 R19 tyres as standard. Additional 20-inch and 21-inch wheels and the M sports brake are available as options.

BMW M insignia for the BMW X4 M40i and BMW X4 M40d.
The BMW X4 M40i (combined fuel consumption: 9.5 – 8.7 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂‑emissions: 215 – 198 g/km according to WLTP) and the BMW X4 M40d (combined fuel consumption: 7.3 – 6.6 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂‑emissions: 190 – 171 g/km according to WLTP) are based on the appearance and standard equipment of the corresponding X3 models and, like these, bear typical BMW M insignia such as the specific BMW M kidney with chrome frame, double kidney bars in high‑gloss black and M logo as well as the aerodynamically optimised M exterior mirrors in high-gloss black. The rear apron with its anvil-shaped insert is complemented by air curtain trim in high-gloss black. Analogous to the BMW X3 M40i and BMW X3 M40d are the free-form tailpipe trims in black chrome with the two "teeth" and the tyres.

Eleven paint finishes for the BMW X3 and one exclusively for the BMW X4.
Following the redesign of the BMW X3, BMW offers a total of eleven paint finishes in the regular range. The metallic paint finish Skyscraper Grey (from 12/21) is new, and as is M Brooklyn Grey metallic from the M sports package upwards, along with the two BMW Individual paint finishes Aventurine Red and Tanzanite Blue. The new metallic finish Piedmont Red is available exclusively for the BMW X4. For the first time there is also a choice of numerous special BMW Individual paint finishes for the two models, including matt finishes such as Frozen Deep Grey. The range of special finishes available is to be further expanded in the future.

Significantly revised interior.
The new BMW X3 and the new BMW X4 adopt the centre console of the current BMW 4 Series. The free-standing, central Control Display with touch function now offers a screen diagonal of 10.25 inches as standard in all vehicles. A 12.3-inch version of the touch display is also available as an option. The significantly improved standard equipment now also includes sports seats with covers from a new Sensatec generation in the new Ray grain and with perforated main seat surfaces, as well as automatic climate control with 3-zone control. In order to make the vehicle configuration process clearer and more straightforward for customers, not least reducing the number of conflicts, the complexity of the equipment lines and optional extras has deliberately been reduced by 30 per cent. In addition to the cupholder and a model-specific emblem, the centre console accommodates the newly designed control island with the gear selector lever, buttons for the start/stop system, the electric parking brake, hill descent control and various driving experience functions as well as the BMW Controller. The engine start button is positioned here, too. New electroplated trim elements on the air vents add a touch of elegance while emphasising the horizontal lines in the interior. Additional functions are offered by the optional extra Ambient Light, which features contour lighting above the decorative trim in the dashboard and ambient lighting that shines gently downwards below the accent trim to create a particularly high-quality, relaxing atmosphere in the interior.

Hybrid technology for all engines.
The new BMW X3 and the new BMW X4 demonstrate increasing electrification with modern hybrid technology in connection with all seven drive systems available in Germany. In addition to the BMW X3 xDrive30e with plug-in hybrid drive, which has been in production since December 2019, all 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines in the two model series now use 48-volt mild hybrid technology. After the three available diesel engines were converted to the mild‑hybrid‑system in the course of 2020, the three petrol engines are now also being fitted with this technology including a 48‑-volt‑starter generator, ensuring even better driving performance with lower fuel consumption and increased driving comfort. The energy obtained by means of recuperation and stored in the 48-volt battery can also be used for an electric boost of 8 kW/11 hp in addition to supplying the 12‑volt on-board network.

Three diesel and three petrol engines on offer.
Seven drive options are available in Germany for the new BMW X3 and the new BMW X4, covering a power range from 135 kW/184 hp to 265 kW/360 hp. These include three diesel engines: with 140 kW/190 hp in the BMW X3 xDrive20d (fuel consumption combined: 6.5 – 5.8 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂‑emissions: 171 – 151 g/km according to WLTP) and the BMW X4 xDrive20d (combined fuel consumption: 6.5 – 5.7 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂‑emissions: 170 – 149 g/km according to WLTP), with 210 kW/286 hp in the BMW X3 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 7.0 – 6.2 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂‑emissions: 183 – 162 g/km according to WLTP,) and the BMW X4 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 7.0 – 6.1 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂‑emissions: 182 – 161 g/km according to WLTP) and with 250 kW/340 hp in the BMW X3 M40d and BMW X4 M40d.

The petrol engine models are the BMW X3 xDrive20i (combined fuel consumption: 8.4 – 7.6 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂‑emissions: 192 – 172 g/km according to WLTP) and the BMW X4 xDrive20i (combined fuel consumption: 8.4 – 7.5 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂‑emissions: 190 – 170 g/km according to WLTP) with 135 kW/184 hp, the BMW X3 xDrive30i (combine fuel consumption: 8.5 – 7.6 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂‑emissions: 194 – 173 g/km according to WLTP) and the BMW X4 xDrive30i (combined fuel consumption: 8.5 – 7.5 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂‑emissions: 192 – 171 g/km according to WLTP) with 180 kW/245 hp and the BMW X3 M40i and BMW X4 M40i with 265 kW/360 hp.

Plug-in hybrid with an electric range of up to 50 kilometres.
The BMW X3 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid model is reserved for the Sports Activity Vehicle. Its system consists of a 4-cylinder petrol engine combined with an electric motor whose power is transmitted to all four wheels. Their joint system output of 215 kW/292 hp can be increased by up to 30 kW/41 hp by temporary use of the electric motor’s peak output. It has a lithium-ion high-voltage battery that enables a range of up to 50 kilometres.

8-speed Steptronic transmission and BMW xDrive as standard.
All engine versions are combined with 8-speed Steptronic gearboxes specifically matched to the respective engine characteristics. The BMW X3 M40i, BMW X3 M40d and all BMW X4 models feature the otherwise optional 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission including paddle shifts and Launch Control as standard. BMW xDrive all-wheel drive makes a significant contribution to the versatile sporty flair of the BMW X3 and BMW X4. Its precise electronic control ensures especially sporty power distribution that is typical of the brand. Its rear-wheel orientation makes dynamic cornering in particular an especially intense experience. In addition, BMW xDrive optimises both driving stability and traction over rough terrain.

Driving Assistant Professional available for the first time.
In refreshing the BMW X3 and BMW X4, BMW has reorganised and once again significantly expanded the range of modern driver assistance systems to enhance both comfort and safety. The Driving Assistant Professional*, available for the first time as an option in these model series, offers the driver comfortable relief and increased safety in driving situations where there is a conscious desire for assistance. In addition to the Driving Assistant, which is also optional, functions include Active Cruise Control with improved functionality in the city, junction warning with additional city brake function, emergency lane assistant and improved steering/lane guidance assistant. The 3D environment visualisation Assisted View in the instrument cluster provides an overview of which Driving Assistant Professional assistance systems are activated and what functions they offer. Parking Assistant Plus now also includes the reverse assistant, which helps retrace a completed line in reverse. Another new feature in the BMW X3 and BMW X4 is the optional BMW Drive Recorder, which takes videos around the vehicle.

BMW Live Cockpit Plus with 10.25-inch display as standard.
With BMW Live Cockpit Plus as standard and intelligent networking including innovative digital services based on BMW Operating System 7, the BMW X3 and BMW X4 now offer particularly close interaction between driver and vehicle. BMW Live Cockpit Plus includes the iDrive operating system with a Control Display which is now at least 10.25 inches in size and a Touch Controller, as well as an instrument cluster in Black Panel look with a 5.1-inch colour display at the centre. The BMW Live Cockpit Plus can be supplemented by the optional BMW Head-Up Display. As an optional extra, BMW Live Cockpit Professional offers a fully digital display network: the high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and the Control Display each have a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches.

New generation of navigation with BMW Maps.
One of the most important innovations in the area of digital services is BMW Maps. The cloud-based system enables significant performance improvement, a high degree of accuracy and simplified destination entry. The new-generation navigation system offers extremely fast and dynamic route calculation based on precise real-time traffic data delivered at short intervals. In addition, BMW Maps with Connected Parking provides drivers with even more detailed support in the search for a vacant parking space near their destination.

Smartphone connectivity and integration of 3rd party services.
BMW Live Cockpit Plus and BMW Live Cockpit Professional offer optimised. wireless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay. Here, the driver can view all the important information from the apps on the Control Display and also – in intelligently processed form – in the instrument cluster and the optional BMW Head-Up Display.

With Android Auto™, the BMW Group has added another customer-relevant service to its range of seamless in-vehicle connectivity, offering easy and safe use of smartphone functions such as music, media or messaging apps while driving. Highlights of the interaction between Android Auto and BMW include convenient and wireless networking and the intelligent integration of Google MapsTM navigation instructions in the BMW Head-up Display.

Deep integration of Amazon Alexa makes it possible to use Amazon’s voice service inside the vehicle in the same way as the customer is already used to doing at home. With the help of the My BMW app, which is available in over 40 countries for both iOS and Android operating systems, Amazon Alexa can be installed in the vehicle in just a few steps. In addition, the My BMW App is a universal interface to the vehicle. It offers information on the state of the vehicle at all times and, depending on the options fitted, enables remote access functions such as vehicle location, locking and unlocking the doors or recording the vehicle’s surroundings (Remote 3D View).

Enhanced functionality for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is also constantly gaining additional capabilities in the BMW X3 and BMW X4, creating an even more intensive bond between driver and vehicle. With the digital companion, naturally spoken instructions can now be used to regulate the air conditioning, open and close the windows or change the driving experience switch modes, for instance. It can also access the new News app, which reads out the latest news to passengers, and learn routines that increase comfort and driving pleasure in certain situations.

Remote Software Upgrade updates “over-the-air”.
Since 2018 and the introduction of BMW Operating System 7, it has been possible for drivers of BMW models to keep their vehicle constantly up to date with the latest software status using Remote Software Upgrade. In the BMW X3 and BMW X4, too, upgrades can include different content from new services to improved vehicle features and can be loaded "over‑the-air". Furthermore, intelligent networking offers the option to integrate additional functions into the vehicle at a later date. The options that can be retrofitted digitally include the high beam assistant and BMW Drive Recorder.

“A mobilidade elétrica é uma moda”. “Os elétricos não têm potência”. “Os elétricos não têm autonomia”. O BMW iX3 derruba todos os mitos em estereótipos da mobilidade elétrica.

O primeiro modelo X da marca 100% elétrico, representa um importante passo no percurso do BMW Group no desenvolvimento do veículo do futuro, suportado pela estratégia de eletrificação NUMBER ONE >> NEXT. A estratégia visa consolidar a marca como o principal fornecedor de mobilidade premium individual.

O BMW iX3 responde com bastante sucesso a dois dos principais desafios da mobilidade elétrica: a potência e a autonomia. O novo SAV da marca atinge os 180 km/h, graças a uma potência de 282 CV, e um binário de 400 NM. A capacidade de aceleração do iX3 dos 0 aos 100km/h é de 6,8 segundos.

No que à autonomia diz respeito, a bateria de 80 kWh garante uma autonomia de cerca de 460 km. Com 34 minutos de carregamento, é possível chegar a 80% da carga total do veículo. Um carregamento de apenas 10 minutos, garantirá pelo menos 100 km de autonomia.

O BMW iX3 é o primeiro modelo a recorrer à tecnologia eDrive de quinta geração, que numa só unidade consegue juntar um motor elétrico e um bloco eletrónico de transmissão e gestão. Esta tecnologia é o culminar de um longo processo iniciado em 2013, ano em que foi lançado o primeiro veículo premium 100% elétrico, o BMW i3.

BMW Group Plant Spartanburg doubles battery production capacity

Spartanburg/ Munich. BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the US state of South Carolina has doubled its capacity for production of high-voltage batteries. The plant’s own battery facility now produces the new fourth-generation batteries. These are intended for the plug-in hybrid models of the new BMW X5 and the future BMW X3, also produced in Spartanburg.

“We have invested around ten million US dollars in a new battery assembly line and expanded the area to more than 8,000 square metres. This means we could double the number of batteries produced if needed to meet market demand,” explains Michael Nikolaides, Senior Vice President Engines and Electrified Drivetrains, BMW Group.

The new assembly line will be able to produce different types of fourth-generation batteries to serve the growing range of electrified vehicles locally. These batteries are based on a new technology concept that further enhances their performance.

More than 120 people will be employed in battery production at Plant Spartanburg by the end of the year, having completed a comprehensive training programme to acquire the technological know-how needed for battery production.

“We have produced batteries on site at Plant Spartanburg since 2015 – making the BMW Group a pioneer for electromobility in the US,” says Knudt Flor, President and CEO, BMW Manufacturing, Co., LLC. In the past four years, the plant’s battery assembly team has produced a total of more than 45,000 batteries.

Further investment in production of BMW X5 and BMW X3 plug-in hybrids

Between 2015 and 2018, BMW Group Plant Spartanburg built the first series produced plug-in hybrid vehicle, the BMW X5 xDrive40e (combined fuel consumption: 3,3 l/100km; combined power consumption: 15,3 kWh/100km ; combined CO2-emission: 77 g/km), for the core BMW brand. The start of production for the new BMW X5 xDrive45e (combined fuel consumption: 2,0-1,7 l/100km*; combined power consumption: 23,5-20,3 kWh/100km*; combined CO2-emission: 47-39 g/km*) will be in August 2019; production of the BMW X3 xDrive30e (combined fuel consumption: from 2,4 l/100 km*; combined power consumption: from 22,7 kWh/100 km*; combined CO2-emission: from 56 g/km*; provisional figures) will get underway in December.

“The BMW X5 and BMW X3 are currently among the top-selling BMW models in the US. We expect their plug-in hybrid variants to be just as popular with customers,” adds Flor.

Since the start of the year, the BMW Group has invested a further ten million US dollars in production of plug-in hybrid models. An additional 225 vehicle assembly workers received training in the production of electrified vehicles, adding to the Plant’s already skilled staff.

International production network for batteries

The BMW Group currently has three battery facilities: at the Competence Centre for E-drive Production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in Germany, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the US and at Plant Powertrain of its joint venture, BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA). The BMW Group also produces batteries for local car production in cooperation with a partner in Thailand. The BMW Group’s battery research and pilot plant are located in Munich.

Varied range of M Performance Parts for the new members of the BMW X model family.

Munich. The three latest additions to the BMW X model family, the BMW X2 (combined fuel consumption: 6.2-4.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 142–119 g/km)*, the BMW X3 (combined fuel consumption: 8.4-5.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 193–140 g/km)* and the BMW X4 (combined fuel consumption: 7.3-5.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 173–142 g/km)*, combine a sporty, elegant appearance with outstanding driving dynamics properties. Thanks to the extensive range of M Performance Parts from the program of Original BMW Accessories, each of these product features can be adapted to the owner's personal taste and given greater emphasis.

Development of M Performance Parts always draws on the vast racing expertise of BMW M GmbH. All components are perfectly matched – both with each other and with the specific properties of each model. In addition to accentuating interior and exterior design, many of the M Performance Parts also meet functional criteria and enhance lightweight construction, for example.

Refined looks based on details inspired by motor racing.
M Performance lettering is one particularly effective way of creating a visual highlight. Designed to ensure an ideal match with the model in question, the side lettering in Frozen Black underscores the sporty character of the vehicle, in particular emphasising the dynamic proportions of the body. In addition to the side lettering, the appearance of the BMW X3 and BMW X4 can be further refined with the front lettering in high-gloss black – matching the other front attachment parts for these two models, which also feature a high-gloss finish. M Performance front radiator grilles in high-gloss black are available for the BMW X2. These have the same geometry as the standard grilles but are much more visually striking, thereby underscoring the vehicle's sporty flair and dynamic performance.

The M Performance exterior mirror caps in carbon fibre are another eye-catcher available for all three series. They are crafted elaborately by hand from carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). With several coating layers and finished with a high-gloss polish, the carbon fibre caps have a depth effect which gives them a compelling appearance.

Sporty, elegant refinement on the inside.
The interior of the BMW X2, BMW X3 and BMW X4 can also be enhanced for additional sporty flair by means of select details, while at the same time increasing feel-good comfort on board. The M Performance floor mats are a potential contributing factor here. They are made of velour velvet with a leather-look surround and contrasting decorative seams. Their soft material makes them especially gentle on shoe heels. The front mats for driver and passenger bear the M Performance branding.

The M Performance steering wheel ensures the driver of a BMW X2, BMW X3 or BMW X4 retains a perfect grip on everything. It has distinct, specially lined grip areas which are covered with Alcantara. This microfibre fabric similar to suede is exceptionally pleasant to the touch in all temperatures and provides an optimum hold. The upper and lower part of the steering wheel are also covered in high-quality leather, as is the accompanying steering wheel trim panel. A red motorsports marking in the 12 o'clock position emphasises the car's dynamic qualities, as does the silver-grey, hand-sewn cross-stitch seam. Steering wheel trim panels are also optionally available for the BMW X3 and BMW X4 in carbon fibre/leather, with central clasp in either open-pore or high-gloss carbon fibre.

Shift paddles at the steering wheel enable the driver to change gear without taking their hands off the steering wheel, thereby facilitating vehicle control even when driving in dynamic style. For the BMW X3 and BMW X4 with this feature on board, the shift paddles are available in high-gloss carbon fibre. They are covered in an extremely fine carbon mesh, enhanced with a PUR finish and a high-gloss polish, and also feature plus and minus symbols in anodised red.

Extensive range of attractive summer complete wheel sets.
Much of a vehicle's design is perceptibly dominated by its wheel/tyre combination. This is why adaptations in this area have traditionally been among the most popular customisation measures in the automotive sector. This also accounts for the wide range available as part of the BMW M Performance Parts program. The 20-inch summer complete wheel set Styling 717 M is available for the BMW X2, for example. The matt black finish of this light alloy wheel, weight-optimised by means of flowforming technology (rolled rim well) adds a particularly striking touch of sporty flair. The 19-inch M Performance light alloy wheel Double Spoke 698 M in Orbit Grey is available as a summer complete wheel set for the BMW X3 and BMW X4. The exclusive finish and visible wheel bolts are key contributing factors to an impressive appearance here. The 21-inch forged wheel Y Spoke 701 M Bicolor is currently the largest wheel in the program of Original BMW Accessories for the BMW X3 and BMW X4. It also has a rolled rim well, and it weighs some two kilograms less than a similarly designed cast wheel in the same format: this is because of the special manufacturing process used. The Bicolor look with black as the background colour and the burnished finish on the visible side make for a very eye-catching impression, especially due to the high-quality clear finish.

Light installations for a highly effective appearance.
One discreet customisation option that also adds a definite touch of exclusivity at the same time are the BMW LED door projectors. They replace the standard entry light and project a graphic onto the ground when the door is opened. The selection of motifs include the BMW M logo as well as various motifs from an M Performance slide set.

“On a Mission”: BMW X3 goes to Mars. Global campaign for new BMW X3 uses innovative virtual reality to showcase passion and dedication.

Munich. The new BMW X3 will be released in November, shortly after its world premiere at the IAA International Motor Show in Frankfurt. An extensive global campaign entitled “On a Mission” will accompany the launch of this successful model. Campaign highlights include a rousing TV spot with extreme athletes and a 360° virtual reality test drive on Mars, with continuation of the campaign in digital channels.

The “On a Mission” campaign presents the BMW X3 as free-spirited and independent, always ready to push the boundaries. The theme of venturing off the beaten track and discovering new horizons is underlined by the off-road character of the SAV and its ground-breaking innovations. A key idea is the passion that transforms a job or a hobby into a mission. This appeal to the emotions is a common thread throughout the campaign: BMW celebrates people who pursue their dreams with relentless passion – people who are on a mission.

“‘On a Mission’ pays tribute to a life full of passion, inner drive and true dedication. The BMW X3 brings this dynamic to the automotive world and guarantees a thrilling driving experience, no matter where your passion takes you,” explains Hildegard Wortmann, Senior Vice President Brand BMW.

From idea to media: Big data supports campaign development.

Campaign development started out with a widescale interdisciplinary big data analysis that gathered and evaluated information about different BMW X3 buyer groups. This allowed BMW to consider the interests and media use of its future customers already in the creative phase of the campaign. As a result, the BMW X3 campaign delivers highly-relevant content that appeals to a young and dynamic digital target audience and fits perfectly into their world of experience. However, rollout through the appropriate channels is just as important as the content itself. Social media and the brand’s own online presence will therefore be a priority for “On a Mission”.

On a mission to Mars.

The communications highlight of the campaign is clearly a very special test drive: Using virtual reality, the BMW X3 takes customers and fans on the world’s first test drive through the breath-taking scenery of Mars – quite literally pushing the boundaries. Spectacular images and evocative sounds transform the trip to Mars into an immersive experience. During a virtual reality drive across the atmospheric and ever-changing surface of the planet – reminiscent of a Hollywood film – different features of the BMW X3 are presented as part of the “BMW Personal Co-Pilot”.

The 360° experience can be enjoyed on all widely-available smartphones through YouTube or using VR glasses, and will be integrated into the BMW brand’s own online channels. The Mars mission will also be shown at selected BMW dealers and branches and integrated into brand events and mailings using Google Cardboard.

TV spot and launch film with real-life extreme athletes.

The TV commercial features protagonists who live for their mission: The BMW X3 accompanies Swede Freddie Meadows as he ice-surfs in the Arctic; free mountain rider Martin Söderström on his daredevil ride across rocky ridges; and extreme campers Fatima Gil and Vicky Vega perched on the slopes of steep rock walls. The stunning natural surroundings showcase the off-road character and dynamic performance of the new BMW X3. That the TV spot uses only real-life extreme athletes, not actors, underlines the authenticity and passion of the powerful SAV.

The launch film, which will primarily be used for online communications, shows photographer Pablo Durana on a tour through the Chilean Andes with extreme mountain-biker Trond Hansen. As well as highlighting many aspects of the new BMW X3, it also features the SPECIALIZED for BMW Turbo Levo FSR 6Fattie mountain bike, an exclusive cooperation between BMW and premium bike manufacturer SPECIALIZED.

The TV commercial and launch film also provide the basis for a series of short clips that will run in all BMW-brand social media channels and digital advertising spaces. In this way, the activities “surfing”, “mountain biking”, “camping” and “art” can be targeted towards users with those interests to amplify the reach of the BMW X3.

The films’ protagonists are an integral part of all elements of the campaign and also appear in the print motifs. In this way, “On a Mission” creates a consistent presence with high recognition value across all channels. The campaign will also make use of the many protagonists’ own social media channels and their vast fan communities.

Unique vehicle configurator for Facebook.

Based on the Facebook Canvas ad, BMW has developed an extensive interactive vehicle visualiser, with a level of detail and range of functions not previously seen on this platform. Users have fun creating their own individual BMW X3 directly in the Facebook app, choosing their preferred design line, paint colour, wheel rims and interior configuration.

The visualiser consists of 64 nested individual Canvas ads. This was a major challenge for both planning and realisation. The visualiser will be rolled out through the international BMW Facebook account and local BMW markets. The interactive experience ends with an invitation to test-drive the new BMW X3.

“The visualiser on Facebook represents a totally new way for us to generate leads through social media,” explains Uwer Dreher. “Implementation with so many individual Canvas ads was definitely complex and challenging. But we are very proud to be able to offer our fans this unique feature.”

Mountain bikes and expeditions.

Exciting product collaborations and the BMW brand’s popular winter-sports activities, under the name “BMW Mountains”, will further enrich the campaign.

BMW Lifestyle and premium bike manufacturer SPECIALIZED will be presenting an exceptional mountain bike: a limited special edition of the Specialized Turbo Levo, the SPECIALIZED for BMW Turbo Levo FSR 6Fattie. The two premium brands share a unique passion for sporty dynamics, a love of innovative design and technologies, and constantly strive to reinvent themselves.

Under the “BMW Mountains” banner, the BMW X3 is supporting the “No Man’s Land” expedition of extreme skiers Matthias Mayr and Matthias Haunholder, as they attempt to become the first to ski down Mount Tyree in the Antarctic. The BMW X3 will be their trusty companion on the journey from Buenos Aires to Punta Arenas. Once they reach Antarctica, they will cover several hundred more kilometres on skis and by kite. BMW will follow the expedition with live feeds and stories in its own digital channels. A film about the adventures of the two extreme skiers will be released to the general public in 2018.

Successful member of the X family.

BMW created the mid-sized SAV (Sports Activity Vehicles) segment in 2003 with the BMW X3. More than 1.5 million units of the first two model generations have since been sold worldwide. The new BMW X3 is now set to continue this success story, with even more striking and dynamic styling and a luxurious interior. Like all members of the successful X family, it combines outstanding ride quality in all terrains with unlimited everyday practicality. The new BMW X3 also offers the highest level of connectivity and driver assistance systems. Ground-breaking innovations, which BMW combines under the name “BMW Personal CoPilot” and which are usually reserved for the business and luxury segments, are available in the mid-size class for the first time in the new BMW X3. The interior finish has also been significantly upgraded. Inside, the new X3 boasts nearly all the features of the new 5 Series and impresses with the high level of workmanship more familiar from the BMW 7 Series.

BMW X2 Digital Camouflage @Milan.

Munich. The new BMW X2 is still far from being ready for its market debut. Nevertheless, the newest Sports Activity Coupé in the BMW X family is beginning to get out and about in its most congenial environment – the urban jungle.

As a matter of fact, it was noted during Fashion Week, which is being held in Milan from 20 to 25 September, wearing an outfit perfect for the occasion. The athletic silhouette of the new BMW X2 was attired in a spectacular camouflage effect, with tones of yellow, gray, and black that highlight its sporty and stylish qualities. The unusual underlying design is based on a digital model and expresses the innovative spirit and the orientation towards the future of the BMW Group.

Therefore it is not surprising that the new BMW X2 wearing Camouflage Digital is at the center of attention in the most characteristic and cool locations in Milan. Anyone who encountered it during its excursion into city life was able to recognize it immediately for its extravagant, contemporary, and sporty design. The outing offered a good opportunity to see first hand the new interpretation of BMW X design aimed at young people who are extroverted and active.
