Euro NCAP safety rating: The new BMW X1 and BMW 2 Series
Active Tourer receive top 5-star rating.

European Consumer Protection Institute awards both premium compact
models the top rating. New centre airbag reduces the risk of injury to
the driver and front passenger in the event of a side impact. New
generation of front collision warning can also protect pedestrians and
cyclists when making turns.

Munich. The current new editions of the BMW X1 and
the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer are characterised by offering versatile
driving pleasure. The fact that the progress associated with the
generation change also leads to an increase in active and passive
safety has now been confirmed in the European New Car Assessment
Programme (Euro NCAP). The independent safety experts of the European
Consumer Protection Institute awarded both the Sports Activity Vehicle
(SAV) and the modern all-rounder in the premium compact segment the
highest rating of 5 stars. In the demanding test procedure, the new
BMW X1 and the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer stood out thanks to
their excellent occupant protection in collisions of various types,
effective protection for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as
effective accident avoidance systems.

The extensive standard equipment featuring safety-relevant driver
assistance systems decisively contributed to the 5-star rating. Above
all, the latest generation of front collision warning with braking
function provides an additional plus in safety in urban traffic. It
can now also detect pedestrians and cyclists approaching parallel to
the lane from behind or in front when turning right, effectively
helping to avoid a collision with weaker road users. In addition, the
new system warns of oncoming traffic when turning left. All of the
driver assistance systems used in the new BMW X1 and the new BMW 2
Series Active Tourer are among the best on the market and impressed
the Euro NCAP safety experts with their range of functions and
reliable level of response.

The new BMW X1 and the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer convinced the
experts with their innovative systems in the area of passive safety.
Both models feature a centre airbag between the driver and front
passenger seats as standard. This system, used for the first time in
BMW models in the compact segment, was rated to be extremely effective
in the test. It is the latest component of the BMW integrated safety
concept, which is being advanced constantly and which, in addition to
highly resilient support structures and precisely designed deformation
paths, also includes a model-specific combination of precisely
coordinated restraint systems.

In various collision tests, this integrated safety concept proved to
guarantee a high level of protection against injury at all times in
both models, regardless of the size and seating position of the
occupants. In both the front and rear seats, the headrests and seats
of the new BMW X1 and the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer effectively
protect against cervical injuries that can be triggered by a rear-end
collision, according to Euro NCAP. In addition, the test experts
highlighted the standard equipment featured by both models with the
intelligent emergency call and an emergency braking system for
avoiding secondary collisions.

To reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians and cyclists, the new BMW
X1 and new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer feature active engine
compartment lids. In the event of an impact, the engine compartment
lids are raised by means of pyrotechnic actuators to create additional
deformation space between them and the hard components underneath. The
system proved to be reliable and effective at different speeds in the
Euro NCAP safety test.

The ratings of the Euro NCAP testing institute are a benchmark for
accident safety recognised Europe-wide and the safety level is being
raised constantly. Only new vehicles that offer excellent impact
protection and are also well equipped with comprehensive and practical
technology for accident avoidance receive the highest rating of 5 stars.

All data on mileage, fuel and electricity consumption, CO2
emissions and electric range are provisional values.

Fuel consumption, CO2 emission figures and power
consumption were measured using the methods required according to
Regulation VO (EC) 2007/715 as amended. They refer to vehicles on the
German automotive market. For ranges, the WLTP figures take into
account the effects of any optional equipment.

All figures are already calculated on the basis of the new WLTP test
cycle. WLTP values are used as a basis for the assessment of taxes and
other vehicle-related levies that are (also) based on CO2
emissions and, where applicable, for the purposes of vehicle-specific
subsidies. Further information on the WLTP and NEDC measurement
procedures is also available at www.bmw.de/wltp.

BMW iX achieves highest possible
five-star rating in Euro NCAP safety assessment.

+++New technology flagship from the BMW Group impresses with
outstanding occupant protection for adults and children. +++ New
interactive airbag between driver and front passenger seats reduces
the risk of injury in the event of a side collision. +++ Advanced
driver assistance systems help to prevent collisions with pedestrians
and cyclists+++

Munich. With its purely electric drive and
comprehensive range of digital features, the BMW iX represents a new
era in individual mobility. In addition, it operates at the highest
level of safety. This is according to the experts of the European New
Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) – the consumer protection
institute specialising in automotive safety – who awarded the BMW iX
the highest possible rating of five stars in the Euro NCAP safety
assessment. During the course of the test programme, which was further
intensified in 2020, the BMW Group’s new technology flagship impressed
with both its outstanding occupant protection and its advanced driver
assistance systems, which are particularly effective in helping to
prevent accidents.

The BMW iX achieved five-star ratings in all test categories of the
Euro NCAP crash test. In the assessment of adult occupant protection,
the testers highlighted among other features the effectiveness of the
new interactive airbag between the driver and front passenger seats,
which provides additional protection against injury in the event of a
side collision. Child safety in the rear of the BMW iX was also given
the highest possible score for both frontal and side collisions.

Meanwhile, the integrated safety concept of the BMW iX ensures the
highest level of passenger protection. In addition to precisely
coordinated restraint systems, this includes highly resilient support
structures and precisely designed deformation zones that absorb the
impact of a collision and keep it away from the passenger compartment.
The body structure of the BMW iX combines an aluminium spaceframe
concept with a carbon cage for the passenger compartment. Particularly
torsion-resistant components made of carbon fibre reinforced polymer
(CFRP) are used in the roof, side and rear sections of the BMW iX.

“The BMW iX sets new standards in sustainability, and its top rating
of five stars in the Euro NCAP underlines the vehicle’s comprehensive
sustainability concept,” says Dominik Schuster, Head of Vehicle Safety
BMW. “The extremely stable body structure and the extended range of
restraint systems ensure an outstanding level of occupant protection.
In addition, the BMW iX scores highly both in the test programme and
in everyday driving with innovative driver assistance systems that
significantly reduce the risk of accidents in a wide array of
situations.” Among other features, the BMW iX has a front collision
warning system with brake intervention that can detect pedestrians and
cyclists as well as vehicles. In addition, the automatic emergency
braking system now also reacts in turning situations, helping to
minimise the risk to pedestrians when turning and the risk of
collision with oncoming traffic when turning left.

If a collision does occur, the risk of injury to vulnerable road
users is reduced by carefully designed body elements and flexible
structures at the front of the vehicle. The BMW iX also features an
active bonnet, which is raised by means of a pyrotechnical triggering
mechanism as soon as the data collected by sensors indicate a
corresponding collision. This creates a deformation zone that prevents
direct impact between the pedestrian or cyclist and hard components in
the engine compartment.

Other standard features of the BMW iX include an attention assistant,
lane departure warning and speed limit recognition, all of which
scored positively in the Euro NCAP crash test. The Driving Assistant
Professional package is offered as an option, which also includes
steering and lane guidance assistance. In a separate assessment, BMW’s
Driving Assistant Professional in the iX3 was also recently awarded
the top rating of “very good” by Euro NCAP.

The figures for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, power
consumption and range are measured using the methods required
according to Regulation (EC) 2007/715 as amended. They refer to
vehicles on the automotive market in Germany. For ranges, the WLTP
figures take into account the effects of any optional equipment.

All figures have already been determined on the basis of the new WLTP
test cycle. WLTP values are used as a basis for the assessment of
taxes and other vehicle-related levies that are (also) based on
CO2 emissions and, where applicable, for the purposes of
vehicle-specific subsidies. Further information on the WLTP and NEDC
measurement procedures can be found at www.bmw.de/wltp.

Munich. The BMW i3 sets standards worldwide for
driving pleasure in a purely electrically-driven vehicle. Key factors
here are not only the increased output of the motor in the new BMW
i3s, but also the innovative traction control system adapted
specifically to the instantaneous power deliver of the BMW eDrive
system. Presented for the first time in the new BMW i3s (270 Nm at 0
rpm, 135 kW / 184 HP, power consumption combined in European NEFZ
test-cycle*: 14.3 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 0 g/km), the
system improves traction and driving stability in adverse weather and
road conditions when pulling away, in active Brake Energy Regeneration
phases and when accelerating out of tight corners. At the heart of
this innovation is the control system’s 50-times-faster routine, made
possible because – unlike conventional driving stability systems – the
control process is now calculated directly in the powertrain instead
of in a remote unit requiring long signal paths. This development
provides further evidence of BMW i as a pioneer of innovative
technology within the BMW Group.

“With their high levels of torque and instantaneous responses to
every movement of the accelerator, electric motors already make
significantly higher demands on driving stability systems than
conventional power units,” explains Peter Langen, Head of Chassis
Development at BMW.

That’s why the BMW engineers developed a new type of system
geared squarely to the demands of electric mobility.
The
positive impact of these shorter control cycles is not reserved for
purely electrically driven cars; indeed, this innovative traction
control system also optimises traction, driving stability and driving
dynamics in vehicles with combustion engines. It will therefore be
fitted in BMW and MINI models with front-, rear- and all-wheel drive
to deliver noticeably greater assurance and driving pleasure when road
conditions make pulling away difficult.

Masterminded by the car's safety electronics,
these crash-activated headrests move up to 60 millimetres or 2.36"
forward and up to 40 millimetres or 1.57" upward within fractions
of a second in the event of a collision, reducing the gap between the
headrests and the occupant's head before his head can be thrown back by
the forces acting on the car. This enhances the stabilising safety
function of the headrest and minimises the risk of injury or
over-stretching the occupant's cervical vertebrae. The cervical
vertebra (CV) syndrome also referred to as the whiplash trauma is one
of the most common types of injury in traffic accidents and is caused by
sudden impacts from behind. Highly painful in many cases, such a
trauma may even result from a rear-end collision at low speeds in city
traffic. To avoid collisions of this kind, BMW introduced two-stage
brake lights back in 2003, the illuminated area of the brake lights
becoming larger whenever the driver applies the brakes particularly
hard, thus giving motorists following from behind an absolutely clear
and informative signal, telling them to brake hard too. And now the new
crash-activated headrests offer the occupant of a BMW additional
protection in such a situation, whenever a collision can no longer be
avoided. Comfortable, safe, individually adjustable. From outside the
crash-activated headrests can be clearly distinguished through their
modern, two-piece look formed by the headrest support and the impact
plate together with its padding moving variably as required to the
front. At the side, in turn, the padded section features a button for
manual adjustment of headrest depth in the interest of enhanced driving
comfort, enabling the user to vary the position of the padding within
three different levels by up to 30 millimetres or 1.18". In a
collision the impact plate together with the padding will
instantaneously move forward by up to 60 millimetres or 2.36",
reducing the gap between the headrest and the occupant's head. And at
the same time the impact plate and padding will move up by up to 40
millimetres or 1.57". A second variant of the crash-activated
headrest has been developed for BMW's comfort seats, in this case
featuring side supports stretching along the entire height of the
headrest padding. This new version replaces the former active headrests
on the comfort seats. Activated by the airbag control unit. The
interior of both types of crash-activated headrests comprises complex,
spring-driven mechanical operating units activated by a pyro-actuator.
As soon as the pyro-actuator ignites, it propels a release stick moving
a release plate and setting two adjustment springs free. These springs,
in turn, move the impact plate and the headrest padding both forward
and upward. The pyro-actuator receives its ignition signal from the
airbag control unit as soon as the sensors detect a relevant impact at
the rear of the car, this system developed by BMW thus acting very
quickly and efficiently in protecting the occupants from whiplash
trauma. The new crash-activated headrests enhance not only the
stabilising and safety functions of the headrest, but also the level of
comfort while motoring. Conventional headrests set to the right
position are often perceived as too close to the occupant's head and
therefore appear to limit his freedom of movement. The new
crash-activated headrests, in turn, provide not only enhanced safety,
but also an improved feeling of space, since they are not required to
rest directly on the occupant's head while driving. Once the safety
mechanism in the crash-activated headrests has been actuated, an
appropriate Check/Control message will appear in the instrument cluster,
reminding the driver to go to a BMW workshop in order to renew the
pyro-actuator in the release system.

Contato de imprensa: Sergio Gomes
Tel: +351-21-487-3006
endereço de e-mail: sergio.gomes@bmw.pt

Press Release,Safety, Security
