Munich/Zagreb. The BMW Group and the Croatian
University of Zagreb’s Regional Centre of Excellence for Robotic
Technology (CRTA) continue to advance joint research in battery cell
production. The “Insight” research project will develop and implement
practical AI models to optimise battery cell production at the BMW
Group. The research project covers the entire battery cell value
chain: from electrode production to end-of-line testing and in-house
developed direct recycling.

How the research project saves raw materials, costs and time

At the Battery Cell Competence Centre (BCCC) in Munich, the BMW Group
is developing battery cells for future generations of high-voltage
batteries. As part of this process, numerous test series are
conducted, which by their very nature require significant time and
material investment. At the same time, these tests tie up
manufacturing equipment and laboratory capacity. This is where the
“Insight” research project comes in: Its artificial intelligence
network uses existing test data, as well as real-time data from
ongoing production, to accurately predict battery cell process
parameters and performance data. As a result, the duration and number
of test series can be significantly reduced, while maintaining or
improving quality. In this way, the newly developed AI systems reduce
the material and time required in individual process steps by more
than 50 percent.

Other cell production use cases

The research project’s prediction models not only reduce the number
of test series but also support final approval of battery cells.
Following initial charging at the end of production, the cells must be
stored for a defined period at precisely specified temperatures before
they can be installed in a battery housing. This phase, also referred
to as the “quarantine”, requires corresponding storage capacity.
However, the research project’s AI systems are able to conduct a full
analysis of the battery cells in advance, potentially eliminating this
process step in the future.

Research collaboration combines theory and practice

Since the project was launched in 2024, the BMW Group and the
University of Zagreb have been developing joint solutions using
artificial intelligence to improve battery cell production. To this
end, doctoral candidates and students at the University of Zagreb are
collating and structuring available production data and using it to
create AI models that can identify specific patterns. These AI models
then make predictions that further optimise production performance,
quality and costs. “We are working on scaling the newly developed AI
models from the prototype environment,” explains Christian
Siedelhofer, head of Technology Development Lithium-Ion Battery Cells
at the BMW Group. One option would be to enable cell manufacturers.
“We are also examining to what extent these models are suitable for
additional use cases within our production network.”

Win-win through knowledge sharing

The University of Zagreb contributes expertise in mechanical
engineering, electrical engineering and computer science to the
project. Ongoing knowledge sharing benefits both partners: The
University of Zagreb provides the BMW Group with access to the latest
research findings, while its doctoral candidates and students have the
opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice.

Development of young talent

Another aspect of the cooperation is the development of young talent.
“Our joint project gets doctoral candidates and students interested in
AI and battery cells and the exciting work we do at our Battery Cell
Competence Centres,” says Stefan Kerscher, head of Technology
Development Battery Cells at the BMW Group. “We are delighted when
young talents decide to embark on a career with our company.” The
cooperation offers students intensive mentoring and the opportunity to
expand their professional network across the industry, enhancing their
attractiveness on the job market and opening up outstanding career
opportunities. The cooperation between the BMW Group and the
University of Zagreb strengthens the innovation capability and
competitiveness of both partners.

Battery cell expertise along the entire value chain

The BMW Group consolidates its battery cell know-how at its
Competence Centres in Munich, Parsdorf and Salching. The Battery Cell
Competence Centre (BCCC) in Munich houses research and development for
the battery cells of the future. The best battery concept from the
BCCC will be produced under near-series conditions at the Cell
Manufacturing Competence Centre (CMCC) in Parsdorf. Close
cross-divisional collaboration between Development, Purchasing and
Production integrates product and process in a unique way. In addition
to producing sample cells, the BMW Group is also focusing its efforts
on the reuse of materials. As part of this process, the company has
put into service a Cell Recycling Competence Centre (CRCC) in
Salching, Lower Bavaria, together with Encory GmbH, which will
implement the innovative direct recycling concept. The intellectual
property for the recycling method is owned by the BMW Group.

Contato de imprensa: Joao Trincheiras
Tel: +351-21-487-3080
endereço de e-mail: joao.trincheiras@bmw.pt

Press Release,Sustainability,Drive Technologies,Locations,Research & Development,Production,Production Plants,Mobility of the future,Munich,Artificial Intelligence,Battery Cells

Munich. The BMW Museum opened its doors to more than
847,000 guests last year – a new record. Highlights included the
arrival of the exhibition “Belle
Macchine. Italian Automotive Design at BMW” and the “50
Years of BMW Art Cars and the BMW 3 Series” special exhibition,
which was replaced by a 50th anniversary celebration for the BMW 6
Series. Since the market launch of its founding father in spring 1976,
the 6 Series has grown into a trailblazing design classic. And the
original car can still claim the longest production run of any BMW
model series – at 13 years. The new exhibition, which explores every
aspect of the car fondly known as the “sharknose”, will be open to
visitors in the BMW Museum’s Rotunda until the end of January 2027. It
is accompanied by a “floating” body-only model of the 6 Series outside
the Museum building and by a selection of cars in the Art Car Gallery
and the permanent exhibition’s “car tower”.

One of the BMW greats, then as now.
The BMW
Museum is recalling 50 years of BMW 6 Series history through a
selection of hand-picked exhibits. BMW set new standards in automotive
construction with the introduction of the 6 Series in the mid-1970s.
“For five decades now, the BMW 6 Series has been a paragon of
elegance, sporting potency and long-distance comfort,” says
Helmut Käs, Head of BMW Group Classic and BMW
Museum. “This iconic design has established itself as one of
the most influential in BMW history and is highly valued by fans and
collectors around the world.”

From 1976 to 1989, the original BMW 6 Series was produced exclusively
in coupé form. The new model borrowed its technical underpinnings from
the BMW 5 Series and took its cues stylistically from the sumptuous
luxury coupés of the 1960s. Its bodies were initially made by Karmann,
then produced at BMW Plant Dingolfing from 1982. The line-up featured
five engine variants and a US-specific model. Chief designer Paul
Bracq oversaw the creation of a dynamic, timeless shape: the pointy
“sharknose”, eye-catching side profile and generously sized windows
come together into an unmistakable visual whole. It took a while for a
successor to the original 6 Series to emerge. The BMW 8 Series
occupied the “large coupé” slot in the range from 1989, and it wasn’t
until 2003 that a new generation of the BMW 6 Series – the E63 –
arrived. The 6 Series also made a name for itself in motor sport. In
1983, BMW joined the fray in close-to-series Group A touring car
racing with the 635CSi – and duly won the European Touring Car
Championship in 1984 and 1986 and the German Production Car
Championship in 1984.

The BMW 6 Series becomes a movie star.
As they
approach the entrance to the Museum, visitors are greeted by an
apparently floating BMW 6 Series, inspired by the
“Flying Cars” series by French photographer Sylvain Viau. The
aesthetic employed here recalls the futuristic visual language of
classic science fiction films and previews the special exhibition in
the Rotunda, where the role of the BMW 6 Series in
movie and TV history is highlighted. Indeed, the BMW 6 Series Coupé
carved out a space for itself on screens big and small, featuring in
international productions such as Dallas and Back to the Future II, as
well as German TV shows including Tatort and Der Bulle von Tölz.

“The BMW 6 Series remains a popular movie car to this day, especially
in more avant-garde productions,” explain the curators of the special
exhibition, Anna Schleypen and Klaus-Anton Altenbuchner. “It is no
‘off-the-peg’ solution, and neither could it be described as a typical
action machine or pure luxury cruiser. Rather, the 6 Series is a car
rich in character. The special exhibition pays tribute to its
show-business side with a film set lifted straight from the 1970s
against the Munich skyline. As such, it quite literally shines the
spotlight on the movie star BMW 6 Series’ iconic connection to the
silver screen.” The BMW 628CSi (1982) and BMW
M635CSi (1985) strike a dynamic pose against this
atmospheric film backdrop, while fictional movie posters showcase the
car from different angles on the way up through the Rotunda.

The BMW 628CSi is one of the most successful of all 6 Series
variants. Its 2.8-litre fuel-injected engine represented a high-tech
upgrade on its arrival in 1979, replacing its carburettor predecessor.
The 628CSi was in production until 1987, winning over drivers with its
masterful blend of grace, sportiness and high comfort. The BMW
M635CSi, available from 1984 with the 286 hp engine from the M1 and
capable of a top speed in excess of 250 km/h (155 mph), was considered
the fastest four-seater in the world at the time. 5,655 examples were
built up to 1989, making this rare M model a modern BMW legend.

Two iconic 6 Series: the BMW 635CSi and BMW
633CSi
As well as the cinematic history of the BMW 6
Series, the special exhibition also focuses on the model’s cultural
significance. The BMW Museum’s Art Car Gallery is
(alternately) presenting two examples of the BMW
635CSi from the BMW Art Car Collection, which has been
celebrating its 50-year anniversary since last year with the BMW
Art Car World Tour. In 1982, Austrian artist Ernst
Fuchs created the fifth BMW Art Car in the collection – the
first based on a series-produced model. Fuchs’ Art Car, which he
called “Firefox on Harehunt”, is a homage to mythology, speed and
spiritual symbolism. Four years later, pop-art luminary Robert
Rauschenberg added a sixth car to the collection,
transforming the 635CSi into a black-and-white collage of art history,
photography and everyday culture.

With the BMW 633CSi, the BMW Museum is showing
another key member of the 6 Series family in its “car
tower”. Unveiled at the same time as the 630CS, the 633CSi
was initially fitted with the then state-of-the-art Bosch L-Jetronic
fuel injection system. In September 1979, it then gained DME digital
engine electronics, which brought further reductions in pollutant
emissions and fuel consumption. However, the engine did experience a
slight dip in output – from 200 hp to 197 hp.

Munich. BMW Group Plant Munich is entering the next
phase, as the plant launches production of the first near-series test
vehicles for the new BMW i3*. This marks the beginning of the final
preparation phase for the start of series production in the second
half of 2026.

“Production of pre-series vehicles is an important milestone for our
plant,” says Peter Weber, Head of BMW Group Plant Munich. “For the
first time, we have built a BMW i3 entirely at our plant – using
state-of-the-art manufacturing technology and digitally connected
processes. With production now close to series maturity, our logistics
and production processes are performing under real-world conditions
across all technologies: in our modernised press shop, the new body
shop, the state-of-the-art paint shop and the new assembly area, as
well as the innovative logistics structures. Over the coming months,
we will apply the lessons learned from the ramp-up to further refine
the processes for series production and ensure a smooth series launch.”

On the road to series production

Integration of new models begins with pre-series vehicles – a crucial
step in gearing up for future series production.

What makes Plant Munich unique is that a team from the facility has
so far worked alongside a team from the nearby pilot plant to assemble
the first vehicles at the Research and Innovation Centre. With the
completion of Plant Munich’s new manufacturing and logistics areas,
vehicles now pass through all production steps on site. This means
that all logistics processes, manufacturing equipment and operations
must already run smoothly. Although quantities are still small, all
parts are supplied via the designated material flows and processed on
the production line. Every part and every production step is closely
scrutinised. A particular focus is on the approval inspection for
cutting-edge production equipment and tools, and on how these are
digitally integrated with existing systems.

Running system tests for the future vehicle model helps identify
further potential for optimisation. In the coming months, efforts will
be directed towards refining processes, based on the insights gained.

Employee training – first virtually, then in the real world

During this phase, employees will also undergo intensive training:
until recently, using augmented reality and now, on the new
installations and machinery. Close cooperation across all areas of
production will ensure operations are seamlessly integrated for a
smooth and successful series launch.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

* Since this is a pre-production model, fuel consumption data for the

Munich. BMW Group Plant Munich is ready for the
production of the next vehicle generation. The manufacturing equipment
has been installed in the new body shop and assembly line, and
functional checks have been successfully completed. During this
so-called "Common Function Test," every system undergoes dry
runs, in which production planners and plant technicians put the
machinery through its paces. All production steps are executed without
any parts in the system. Cycle by cycle, an invisible vehicle takes
shape. Although no actual car is produced, this process provides the
certainty that everything operates seamlessly and as planned.

Peter Weber, head of BMW Group Plant Munich, is delighted: “Just in
time for the holidays, we have reached an important milestone: All

However, plant employees will have to remain patient a little longer
until then. BMW i3 assembly, which has so far been carried out at the
nearby Research and Innovation Centre, will be relocating to Plant
Munich in January. With this move, all technologies at Plant Munich
are then in place to continue rigorous testing of the complete
production system. Series production of the new BMW i3 will then ramp
up in summer 2026.

Typical iFACTORY: digitally planned and tested

Plant Munich is consistently aligned with the guiding principles of
the BMW iFACTORY. Both the new body shop and new assembly line were
digitally planned and built from the outset. Existing installations in
the press shop and paint shop are also integrated into the BMW Group’s
Virtual Factory. This made it possible to conduct functional testing
of all technologies for the new vehicle generation virtually and well
in advance.

Extensive remodelling completed in just 18 months

In just 18 months, about a third of the plant grounds has undergone
extensive remodelling. Old halls were dismantled, and a new assembly,
logistics centre and body shop were built – all while still
manufacturing up to 1,000 BMW 3 Series and 4 Series vehicles per day.
Series production of the new BMW i3 is scheduled to begin in the
second half of 2026.

Munich/Salching. The new Cell Recycling Competence
Center (CRCC) in Salching in Lower Bavaria has now been officially
commissioned – marking a major step forward in implementing innovative
direct recycling as a joint project between the BMW Group and Encory
GmbH. For construction and operation of the new Competence Center, the
BMW Group and Encory are relying on regional partners.

Innovative direct recycling enables reuse of battery raw materials

Direct recycling allows residual materials from battery cell
production, including complete battery cells, to be mechanically
dismantled. The raw materials are not entirely reverted to their
original state, but are instead “directly” fed back into the cell
production cycle. This direct recycling methodology, developed by
experts from the BMW Group, therefore eliminates the conventional,
energy-intensive chemical or thermal processing previously required.
At the new CRCC, direct recycling will be scaled up and introduced in
stages until, once fully operational, the annual volume of battery
cell material recycled will be in the mid-double-digit tonne range.
Going forward, the recovered raw materials will be directly reused in
pilot production of battery cells at the company’s own Cell
Manufacturing Competence Center (CMCC) in Parsdorf.

Direct recycling: A process for the future

“Our direct recycling process puts us at the forefront of the
industry,” explains Markus Fallböhmer, SVP of Battery Production at
BMW AG. “This technology has tremendous potential to further optimise
battery cell production.” It is also conceivable that, for the first
time, cell manufacturers could be enabled to use direct recycling in
series production.

Joint venture runs Competence Center – IP remains with BMW Group

An existing hall in Salching in Lower Bavaria (Straubing-Bogen
district) will be used for the new Competence Center. In addition to
the production area and warehouse space of around 2,100 m², the
building also offers just under 350 m² of offices and break rooms, as
well as photovoltaic systems on the roof. While the Competence Center
will be built and operated by Encory GmbH, the intellectual property
for the recycling method is fully owned by the BMW Group. As a joint
venture between the BMW Group and the Interzero Group, Encory will
develop and implement logistics and consulting solutions, including
for recovery, recycling and reconditioning of vehicle components. Both
partners hold a 50-percent stake in the company. The new Competence
Center will employ about 20 people.

Strong partners from the region

With the exception of one Swiss company, only German firms were
contracted for the construction and operation of the Competence
Center. Nearly half of these companies are located within a
100-kilometer radius of Salching.

Optimal location for new Competence Center in Bavaria

The BMW Group consolidates its battery cell expertise at its
Competence Centers in Munich, Parsdorf and Salching. The Battery Cell
Competence Center (BCCC) in the north of Munich offers
state-of-the-art labs and research facilities for developing the
battery cells for next-generation high-voltage batteries and producing
them in small quantities. The best battery cell from the BCCC will be
scaled up for series processes on a pilot line at the Cell
Manufacturing Competence Center (CMCC) in Parsdorf. Recycling of
surplus material from pilot production in Parsdorf will take place at
the new Cell Recycling Competence Center (CRCC) in Salching. The
recovered raw materials will then be reused in cell production,
ensuring short distances between all Competence Centers and preventing
valuable raw materials from being lost. Following on from the BCCC and
CMCC, the CRCC thus represents the next step in the BMW Group’s
battery cell strategy on the road to the circular economy.

Circular economy at the BMW Group

The BMW Group views the circular economy as one of the key issues in
shaping more resource-efficient mobility. Its approach is aimed at
finding the best ways to keep materials in the cycle – ensuring that
resources are not lost, but retain their value for long-term use. The
BMW Group applies the principles of Re:Think, Re:Duce, Re:Use and
Re:Cycle. From vehicle design and production, to recycling and reuse,
everything is geared towards ensuring that vehicles can serve as a
source of raw vehicles at the end of their use phase. The BMW Group is
taking steps to increase the percentage of recycled materials. It
returns selected production residues to the material supplier or
material processor, enabling their recovery and reintroduction into a
new manufacturing process. In this way, recycled and reused materials
are already making their way into BMW Group vehicles today. The
circular economy requires holistic thinking – from product design, all
the way through to vehicle recycling.

Contato de imprensa: Joao Trincheiras
Tel: +351-21-487-3080
endereço de e-mail: joao.trincheiras@bmw.pt

Press Release,Sustainability,Drive Technologies,Research & Development,Production,Environment,Mobility of the future,Munich,Circular Economy,Innovation,Battery Cells

BMW Museum.

The BMW Museum in Munich takes its visitors on an impressive
journey through more than 100 years of car and motorcycle history
shaped by wonderment, innovation, dynamism and the joy of the open
road on two wheels and four. It charts a course from the early days to
the present day, and in so doing paints a comprehensive picture of the
BMW brand’s talent for innovation. Good news about the Museum has
travelled fast: with over 840,000 visitors in the past year, it is one
of Munich’s most popular. The BMW Museum is part of BMW Group Classic
– the wing of the company charged with nurturing the history of BMW
and everything that involves.

History and Architecture.

Summary.

The Rotunda, popularly known as the “Bowl”, is the signature
feature of the BMW Museum and houses the temporary exhibition. Its
roof is adorned with the BMW logo.

The BMW Museum opened its doors on 18 May 1973.

In 2004 the Museum closed temporarily to allow a comprehensive
redesign and significant expansion of the building. In June 2008,
the BMW Museum re-opened with five times the exhibition space.

In Detail.

BMW has always demonstrated a keen awareness of its history. A
factory museum was opened at the Munich plant back in 1966, and in the
late 1960s the BMW Board of Management decided to build a museum to
reflect the company as a whole. Viennese architect Karl Schwanzer won
the competition to design the building, and the Museum was duly
created according to his plans. His was the inspiration behind the
Rotunda, also known informally as the “Bowl” on account of its
distinctive appearance. The Museum concept was presented in 1973 under
the heading “Streets and urban squares in the renovated exhibition
space”. A central ramp within the Rotunda connects a system of
apparently floating platforms.

Design firm Atelier Brückner took the concept to the next stage with
the renovation and expansion of the Museum from 2004 to 2008, since
when the low-rise section of the building has been part of the overall
complex together with the “Bowl”. “Bridges and houses” have been added
to the architectural concept, which has expanded the surface area of
the Museum to five times its original size. A system of ramps shapes
the inner structure of the Museum. It reaches dynamically into the
space and appears to be almost weightless. The modern facades of the
seven exhibition houses, unusual lines of sight through the interior,
asphalt floors and upward-spiralling pathways through the exhibition
areas create a lively urban setting.

Exhibition and Experiences.

Summary.

The BMW Museum has 5,000 square metres of exhibition space.

A tour through the 25 areas of the permanent exhibition extends
for around one kilometre.

A particular highlight of the exhibition are the renowned BMW Art
Cars. Alternating examples from the collection are shown in the BMW
Museum at varying intervals.

At least three guided tours through the permanent exhibition are
offered per day in German and English.

Tickets can be purchased online or at the Museum. An online ticket
gives visitors entry to the exhibition area without having to wait.

Refreshments during a visit to the BMW Museum can be enjoyed at
the “M1” bistro. Operated by acclaimed caterers Feinkost Käfer, “M1”
welcomes guests with a wide variety of lunch options.

In Detail.

The permanent exhibition represents the core of the BMW Museum and
takes visitors on a themed journey from the past into the future. The
route leads guests through seven exhibition houses. The “House of
Design” is all about the design process and charts the progression
from idea brainstorming to style-defining product; the “House of the
Company” explores the history and company culture of BMW; and the
“House of the Motorcycle” studies the development of motorcycle design
and engineering at BMW. The “House of Technology” displays the
technical innovations BMW has employed to meet the evergrowing demands
of car and motorcycle design. In the “House of Motorsport”, the
history of BMW in race competition commands the spotlight. Here, we
showcase the full spectrum of technical possibilities, turned into
reality with no effort or endeavour spared.

The “House of the Series” details the development of individual model
ranges, such as the BMW 5 Series. BMW’s lines of communication with
the people who use its vehicles is the theme for the “House of the
Brand”, which looks at customers’ personal experiences with BMW cars.
This house also examines the subject of sustainability at BMW. In
addition, the temporary exhibitions in the “Bowl” each have their own
theme and are dedicated to particular subject areas at the company.
Examples have included the BMW i brand and the overall sphere of
electric mobility. Since the BMW Museum re-opened in 2008, it has used
special exhibitions like these to present topics in which the BMW
brand is deeply engaged.

The hour-long guided tour through the permanent exhibition gives
visitors the chance to immerse themselves in the Museum’s wealth of
exhibits and gain some fascinating background insights into the
development of the BMW brand. The tours are led by recognised experts,
who are more than happy to incorporate specific topics or areas of
interest on request. The BMW Museum can also be explored digitally via
accompanying content on smartphones or tablets. Here, visitors can
find out more about the history of the BMW brand and have a lot of fun
in the process. The BMW Museum uses cashless purchase options only –
i.e. credit card, contactless methods or mobile wallet – for entry
tickets, Museum tours and souvenirs. Entry tickets can be paid for
online, using the ticket payment machines or at the cash desk. Guided
tours, kids’ birthday parties and school holiday activities can also
be booked online – up to six months in advance.

Speech Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of
BMW AG

Ladies and gentlemen,

This year’s IAA MOBILITY impressively demonstrates
that the desire for individual mobility has never been stronger.
Today, more than ever, global success depends on the ability to master
new technologies and to anticipate what customers around the world want.

It also takes courage to make bold leaps. A pioneering spirit – to
explore new paths. Confidence in your own abilities. And resilience –
to stay the course, even in the face of headwinds. And on top it
requires a team of nearly 160,000 employees who are passionate about
shaping the future of mobility. Then evolution becomes revolution.
Vision becomes reality.

You’ll remember that, back in 2021, I promised we would lead BMW into
a new era. With the NEUE KLASSE. Today, we deliver on
that promise.

Early this decade, we recognized an opportunity; a chance to set new
benchmarks across all relevant technologies in the car. It was an
opportunity that only comes once in a lifetime. The perfect BMW moment.

The NEUE KLASSE is much more than just a new vehicle. It marks a
completely new model generation. A massive leap that redefines the
entire brand.

The new BMW iX3 will be followed by more than 40 new
or updated BMW models by 2027. Each will have the NEUE KLASSE genes –
regardless of the drivetrain. More than any other project, the NEUE
KLASSE represents the innovative spirit of all our associates. Across
all our brands.

On behalf of the entire company, it is my great honor to unveil:

The new BMW iX3!

Ladies and gentlemen,

I’ve been with the BMW Group for 34 years. I’ve witnessed many world
premieres and bold technological innovations. But a vehicle like this
is something you experience only once. All of us at the BMW Group have
been working tirelessly towards this moment.

With the NEUE KLASSE, we’ve created an unprecedented interplay of
multiple, ground-breaking technologies. Now, we are taking
Sheer Driving Pleasure to a whole new level. In
short: The NEUE KLASSE is more BMW than ever.

And the next highlight is already waiting in the wings. Early next
year, we will unveil the second model of the NEUE KLASSE – a sporty
sedan at the very core of the brand:

the new all-electric BMW i3.

Ladies and gentlemen,

From the drivetrain to battery technology and driving dynamics, from
the operating system to the digital user experience: We’ve elevated
every single aspect to the next level for the NEUE KLASSE.

With this new design language, we’ve even skipped a
whole generation. And there's no one better to explain how our
customers will experience this with all their senses than Adrian van Hooydonk.

Speech Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design

Welcome ladies and gentlemen!

Yes, the big moment has finally come. As Oliver mentioned, with the
Neue Klasse we are taking very big steps in technology. These bigger
steps in technology can only become meaningful hand in hand with big
steps in design. The BMW iX3 has a much bigger range
helped by a very clean shape with excellent aerodynamics.

In the interior you will find a new display concept
that allowed us to clean-up the dashboard and completely redefine the
driving experience.

But let‘s look at the exterior design first: We have
typical solid BMW SAV proportions with a lot of presence and emphasis
on all four wheels. The surfaces are very clean with only a few
precise lines. The front-end shows a new interpretation of the BMW
typical face in which we replace chrome with light. Vertically
oriented kidneys match the more upright overall appearance of our SAV.
This new light signature is part of the daytime running light and it
will make the new BMW iX3 very recognizable by day and by night.
Overall, the car has a very solid stance and strong shoulders and, in
the rear, again a new light signature that emphasizes the width of the car.

In the interior you will find that the driving
experience is and will remain our focus, putting the driver at ease
and in control! The key element to this is our all-new BMW
Panoramic Vision which projects in the bottom of the
windscreen and builds upon our years of experience with head-up
displays. This new display is visible for all passengers on board and
will allow you to quickly check the information you want and need
while keeping your hands on the wheel and your focus on the road
ahead. Together with our new free cut central display and iconic
steering wheel these elements are the corner stones of our new
Panoramic

iDrive system, a whole new driving experience that
you will find in all our future BMW models from now on!

This new user experience already starts when you approach the car and
continues as you get in and set the car up to your personal
preferences. With My Modes you can do that very
easily and select a perfectly curated driving experience – from screen
content or colors to light and sound and even driving characteristics.

So, our new Operating System X focuses on the best
driving experience but will also allow you a much higher level of
personalization making your new BMW truly yours! Overall, the new
digital aspects of our cars will make them more intelligent and easier
to use.

At the same time, this has allowed us to design much cleaner and
warmer interiors, creating very personal living environments on four
wheels. The interior trim “Digital White” is spacious
and modern.

So, starting with the BMW iX3 we are introducing a new form
language that will lead to a new look and feel for the
entire BMW brand. Our designs will be very clean and at the same time
very strong in character, but above all: more BMW than ever!

Thank you very much!

Speech Jochen Goller, Member of the Board of Management of BMW
AG, Customer, Brands, Sales

Thank you, Adrian!

Ladies and gentlemen,

Let’s now move on to MINI, which celebrated its very
own game-changing moment already last year with the introduction of a
completely new product range.

The “New MINI Family”, covering the most desirable
and broad product portfolio in the brand's history, now features four
very distinct models - Convertible, Cooper, Aceman and
Countryman. And regarding the drivetrain, MINI customers of
course have the choice between all-electric or highly efficient
combustion engines.

Clever use of space, wheels at the corner, go-cart feeling, combined
with true Britishness and maximum individuality. That's how MINI
became the world's most successful premium small car brand. Driving a
MINI has always been a confident personal statement. In this way, MINI
has inspired numerous celebrities and designers throughout its
66-years long history.

And today, we are writing the next exciting chapter in this
tradition. Partnering with a brand that stands for customization and
thinking out of the box like few others. I am talking about
Deus Ex Machina!

The outcome of this inspiring and exceptional partnership are two
stunning John Cooper Works models – fraternal twins
with very different styles, yet united by a shared enthusiasm.

I brought one of them with me today, so, let’s have a look.

Ladies and gentlemen,

“The Skeg.” A distinctive and contemporary re-interpretation of
MINI's racing history. Pure. Bold. Innovative. This artwork on four
wheels is based on the MINI John Cooper Works
Electric. Inspired by the world of surfing, it offers pure
electric freedom to enjoy the MINI go-cart feeling on coastal roads.

His twin – “The Machina” – is forged on the
racetrack. Lean, fast and powered by a combustion engine, it embodies
raw racing technology and authentic functionality.

Together, they stand for individual lifestyle and maximum driving
excitement, regardless of the respective drive train.

Similar to what our customers can experience with the New
MINI Family, which is winning over new and old customers worldwide.

That is especially true for our fully electric models. Today, already
one in three MINIs has an electric heart. And the trend continues to rise.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Collaborations like the one with Deus Ex Machina are just one example
for unique customization – the way only MINI can do.

And now, ladies and gentlemen, to something completely different.

Speech Markus Flasch, CEO BMW Motorrad

Ladies and gentlemen,

It is a great pleasure for me to present the BMW Motorrad
Vision CE. It offers the most spectacular insight into our
vision of future of urban

e-mobility that we have ever developed. For me, the Vision CE is a
clear proof to our ambition to shape the future of emission-free
mobility with courage and a pioneering spirit.

Highly innovative single-track urban mobility has been strongly
anchored in the history of BMW Motorrad for decades. We revolutionized
urban mobility already 25 years ago with the unique BMW
C1. In 2014, we were the first manufacturer to combine
outstanding design with an e-drive in the BMW C
evolution. In 2022, we launched the CE 04, a
design & technology masterpiece of emission-free mobility which
remains the global market leader in its segment to this day.

At BMW Motorrad, the development of single-track e-mobility clearly
stands for visionary concepts, innovation leadership and
groundbreaking design. With the Vision CE's special self-balancing
system, we are looking to the future and setting again new standards:
Urban riding fun on two wheels without having to wear a helmet or
motorcycle clothing, thanks to the unique structural bracket design.

The Vision CE – one like no other: Exciting and
inspiring - just like BMW Motorrad!

Speech Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of
BMW AG

Ladies and gentlemen,

At the BMW Group, we are constantly reshaping mobility – just as we
have for nearly 110 years. Our customers’ individual needs, wishes –
and, yes, their dreams – are always at the heart of all our brands.

All of our customers benefit from our innovative approaches and the
latest technologies. At the same time, we are steering the company on
a long-term path that is in line with the Paris Agreement.

This is the spirit that drives us at the BMW Group.

Thank you.

Contato de imprensa: Joao Trincheiras
Tel: +351-21-487-3080
endereço de e-mail: joao.trincheiras@bmw.pt

BMW,BMW Motorrad,Events,Speech,MINI,Europe,Munich

Munich. At the IAA Mobility in Munich from 9 to 14
September, MINI will transform the city into its own stage at two
well-known locations: an impressive Open Space at Max-Joseph-Platz,
and a central brand appearance in the MINI Pavillion at Lenbachplatz,
presenting MINI’s brand DNA at the world's largest mobility event. The
highlight is the world premiere of two exclusive JCW showcars, created
as part of an exciting collaboration.

MINI Pavillion: MINI unveils exclusive JCW
showcars.
MINI's racing background is not only evident
from its recent success at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring:
motorsport has been part of the brand's essence from the very
beginning. As part of the IAA, two unique MINI John Cooper Works
showcars are celebrating their world premiere, the result of an
inspiring collaboration.
For the duration of the IAA, the MINI
Pavillion puts the models centre stage in a spectacular display. The
showcars, which combine the brand's unmistakable racing enthusiasm
with the spirit of a world-famous lifestyle brand, can be admired at
Lenbachplatz. For this, the MINI Pavillion will be extensively
remodeled, and dedicated entirely to the John Cooper Works brand.

MINI at Open Space: Heritage and humour at
Max-Joseph-Platz.
A metropolis within a metropolis: With
its appearance at the Open Space, MINI brings the vibrant city centre
of London to the noble Max-Joseph-Platz in Munich's old town. An
elaborately staged backdrop recreates the heart of the city and
presents the brand’s British identity, including its humour in many details.

With the Bayerische Staatsoper and the Residenztheater in the
background, the focus of Open Space is the all-electric models of the
new MINI family, the high-performance MINI John Cooper Works Electric,
MINI Service and MINI Experience Modes.
With the MINI John
Cooper Works Electric, MINI Aceman SE and MINI Countryman SE ALL 4,
visitors will be able to experience three all-electric MINI models up
close. Max-Joseph-Platz is also the starting point for test drives in
cooperation with SIXT: true to the motto "Only MINI Can Do",
visitors can take all-electric MINIs from the new MINI family out onto
the city's streets from here.

MINI at the IAA: Community Day unites fans of the
brand.
Fans of MINI can also become part of the IAA
Mobility this year: at the "Community Day" on 13 September,
MINI clubs will come together for a drive with their personal MINIs.
Starting at Gut Kaltenbrunn on Lake Tegernsee, the route leads through
Munich and ends with an inspiring get-together with music, BBQ and
dialogue with the community in the MINI Pavillion.

The IAA: a platform for experts and enthusiasts.
As one of the largest and most important international
automotive trade fairs, the International Motor Show (IAA) offers
manufacturers, journalists and other enthusiasts a platform for
dialogue on the topics of mobility, innovation and technology every
two years. The IAA Mobility 2025 is organised under the slogan
"It's All About Mobility". As part of the event, innovations
and concepts will be presented in four formats - at the IAA Summit,
the IAA Conference, the IAA Open Space and the IAA Experience - as
well as at MINI in the MINI Pavillion at Lenbachplatz. Over half a
million visitors were counted at the last IAA 2023 in Munich.

Munich. The BMW Museum in Munich is using a special
exhibition taking place as part of the international BMW Art Car World
Tour to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of both the legendary BMW
Art Car Collection and the iconic BMW 3 Series. The exhibition will
open its doors to visitors from 17 June, hot on the heels of the Le
Mans 24 Hours race weekend. Fittingly, it was at Le Mans in 1975 that
the first BMW Art Car – created by Alexander Calder – staged its
glittering premiere. The exhibition, which runs until 1 February 2026,
will see the BMW Museum present a trio of Art Cars based on the BMW 3
Series: Sandro Chia’s BMW M3 GTR and the BMW M3 (Group A) cars
designed by Michael Jagamara Nelson and Ken Done respectively.

The exhibition at the BMW Museum – the home of the BMW Art Cars
when they are not on display at destinations around the globe – is one
of the attractions of the ongoing BMW Art Car World Tour, the largest
exhibition project yet in the 50-year history of the collection. The
Tour has so far visited 12 markets on five continents, and will
continue to showcase the legendary BMW Art Cars across numerous art
and car platforms, and at institutes worldwide, over the coming year.
The BMW Museum will use the special exhibition to provide insights
into the artistic brilliance and history of the BMW Art Car
Collection, as well as inviting visitors to explore the technical
excellence of the 3 Series and the innovative power of the BMW brand.

50 years of driving pleasure: the BMW 3
Series
Since it first hit the roads in 1975, the BMW 3
Series has served as a byword for driving pleasure and a cornerstone
for the success of BMW. Across five decades, it has reimagined the
concept of the sports sedan, set new standards for performance and put
smiles on the faces of millions of drivers around the world. From the
groundbreaking first generation to today’s innovative models, the 3
Series has been an enduring, style-defining feature of the automotive landscape.

50 years of “rolling sculptures”: the BMW Art Car
Collection
Since 1975, renowned artists from countries
the world over have gone to work creating BMW Art Cars. The idea was
the brainchild of French racing driver and art lover Hervé Poulain,
who teamed up with BMW’s then Head of Motorsport Jochen Neerpasch to
invite friend and artist Alexander Calder to paint a design onto a
car. The result was a BMW 3.0 CSL that competed in the 24 Hours of Le
Mans in 1975, becoming a darling of the crowd – and marking the birth
of the BMW Art Car Collection. Famous names including Frank Stella,
Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Esther Mahlangu,
David Hockney, Jenny Holzer and Ólafur Elíasson have since added
further BMW Art Cars bearing their own individual style to the
collection. More recently, the American John Baldessari and Chinese
multimedia artist Cao Fei used the BMW M6 GTLM and BMW M6 GT3
respectively as a canvas for their takes on the BMW Art Car concept in
2016 and 2017. They therefore joined Jeff Koons and Julie Mehretu in
applying their creativity to dynamic racing cars in the last 15 years.

BMW Art Cars at the BMW Museum from 17 June

BMW M3 Group A by Ken Done (1989):
Australian artist Ken Done created a vibrant and richly coloured
design that captures the energy and dynamism of motor racing. His work
represents a homage to the speed and power of the BMW M3.

“It was a great honour to be asked to be part of this fabulous
Art Car collection. I wanted to express the joy of speed and the
brilliance of the machine itself.” Ken Done

BMW M3 Group A by Michael Jagamara Nelson
(1989):
Michael Jagamara Nelson, also from Australia,
brought the traditions of Aboriginal art to the bodywork of the BMW
M3. His complex motifs using dot painting techniques tell Dreaming
stories that are deeply rooted in the culture of his people.

“A car is a landscape as it would be seen from a plane – I have
included water, the kangaroo and the opossum.” Michael Jagamara Nelson

BMW M3 GTR by Sandro Chia (1992):
Italian artist Sandro Chia transformed a BMW M3 GTR into a
painting on wheels that depicts human figures and emotions in vivid
colours. His work symbolises the connection between man and machine,
and invites us to reflect on the role of the car in modern society.

“I have created both a picture and a world. Everything that is
looked at closely turns into a face. A face is a focus, a focus of
life and the world.” Sandro Chia

The 10th BMW Art Car, a BMW 730i designed by Spanish artist
César Manrique in 1990, is also on show at the BMW Museum as part of
its permanent exhibition.
Munich. The BMW Group sees design as a transformative
force that contributes to dialogue and enables new forms of
cooperation. The motto of this year’s munich creative business week
(mcbw) “How to design a vibrant community” reflects this view. In
these times of increasing polarisation, design plays a key role in
encouraging community and developing innovative solutions. Claudia
Fräßdorf, Head of BMW Group Color & Material Design, artist Morag
Myerscough, and sociologist Prof. Dr. Armin Nassehi will use the New
Modes VI Talk to highlight the role of design in social structures.
Since the first mcbw in 2012, the BMW Group has been a dedicated
partner of the event, underscoring its ongoing commitment to a
sustainable and inclusive future. The 14th edition of mcbw – taking
place on 10 – 18 May 2025 – will see creatives, companies and students
of design, architecture and business meet up in Munich to share ideas
on current issues. “Design brings people together and creates
innovative ways for us to interact with one other,” emphasises Adrian
van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design. “It opens up a wide variety of
perspectives and crafts sustainable solutions.”

New Modes VI / “Me in a bigger We”

BMW Group Design is teaming up with Die Neue Sammlung – The Design
Museum to host the sixth New Modes event, which explores the unifying
quality of design. The members of this year’s panel for “Me in a
bigger We” – Claudia Fräßdorf, Head of BMW Group Colour & Material
Design, artist Morag Myerscough and sociologist Prof. Dr. Armin
Nassehi – will examine the role of the individual within the
collective and the transformative power of design. The event will take
place on 18 May 2025 in the X-D-E-P-O-T space at the Pinakothek der
Moderne (a contemporary art, architecture and design venue in Munich)
and provide a platform for discussing innovative design approaches.
The talk will be chaired by Sonja Pham, freelance journalist and
Deputy Editor-in-Chief of creative publication Grafikmagazin.

Panel members:

Prof. Dr. Armin Nassehi: The renowned sociologist is
Chairman of the Senate at LMU München and Deputy Chairman of the
University Council, and has been a Member of the Bavarian Ethics
Council since October 2024. His work focuses on analysis of societal
transformation processes and the idea of a “society of the present”.

Morag Myerscough: With her boldly colourful
installations, the London-based artist creates places where people can
meet and feel a sense of belonging. On 26 June, her project FLUX will
open up a “third place” in Munich’s Kunstareal cultural hub. Running
for five years, FLUX will offer visitors an interactive public space
“where your imagination can run wild, filling your heart with joy” –
and provide an inviting location for people to gather together.

Claudia Fräßdorf: As Head of BMW Group Colour &
Material Design, Claudia Fräßdorf uses a holistic approach to develop
tailored design concepts that bring together innovative materials,
pioneering technologies and sustainable values. In this way, she
shapes the tactile and aesthetic identity of the brand’s models with a
keen sense for our constantly changing world.

BMW Group x munich creative business week

mcbw will be staging a multitude of events focusing on the challenges
and possibilities of contemporary design. The BMW Group is using this
platform to share its vision of a sustainable and inclusive future and
to showcase innovative approaches to design.

Munich. BMW Group Plant Munich is gearing up to
launch the NEUE KLASSE in summer 2026. During ongoing series
operation, three new production halls are currently being built for
the body shop, assembly and associated production logistics. “For the
production start of the NEUE KLASSE, we will have a state-of-the-art
plant in Munich that is characterised by flexibility, innovation and,
above all, efficiency,” says Plant Director Peter Weber.

Starting in 2027, the plant in Munich will exclusively produce
fully-electric vehicles, further enhancing efficiency boost. Forward
planning, close cooperation with development teams and suppliers, and
the integration of modern production technology within new structures
will all play a key role. “With the NEUE KLASSE, we will significantly
reduce manufacturing costs at the Munich Plant,” says Weber. In
addition to optimised production processes and targeted automation,
the NEUE KLASSE’s new vehicle architecture will also leverage further
efficiencies. Focusing on a single drive train variant reduces
production steps and the number of parts – for example, for wiring
harnesses, which previously varied according to engine type and can be
complex to install.

Unusual process: Pre-series production at pilot plant
The timeline for the ramp-up in Munich is carefully
synchronised – in part due to the plant’s refurbishment. The first
pre-series vehicles will be built at the pilot plant of the BMW Group
Research and Innovation Centre (FIZ), with support from Plant Munich’s
production team, before the end of the year. “Alongside the pilot
plant at the FIZ, we are also using virtual simulations to ensure a
smooth ramp-up,” says Weber, describing the unusual situation in the
decisive year ahead of the launch. He adds that Plant Munich’s
experienced launch team is also working closely with colleagues at the
new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, where the first NEUE KLASSE model will
enter production late this year.

International production network: Cooperation, flexibility and
innovative processes
BMW Group plants are capable of
producing different model variants and drive train types on a single
line. Since the ramp-up of electromobility is not linear and will
progress at varying speeds, the company has relied on “flex-plants”,
which can manufacture vehicles with both internal combustion engines
and electric drive trains. “In this way, we can ensure our delivery
capabilities in different market situations and maintain good capacity
utilisation at our locations,” explains Milan Nedeljković, member of
the Board of Management responsible for Production.

By the end of the decade, the BMW Group expects a significant
increase in the market shares of fully-electric vehicles. For this
reason, the plants in Debrecen and, later, Munich will be the first
facilities dedicated exclusively to fully-electric vehicles, enhancing
electrification capacities throughout the network.

The German plants lead the way on e-mobility in the BMW Group’s
production network: Alongside traditional drive technologies, each of
them builds at least one fully-electric model for the global market.
Even in a volatile environment, the BMW Group continues to grow its
domestic locations, manufacturing over a million vehicles there last
year – accounting for a quarter of Germany's total automotive production.

At the same time, the company’s production also depends on a balanced
global distribution of value creation. “The strategic and flexible
structure of our production network strengthens our resilience and
makes us more competitive,” adds Nedeljković.

Focus on employees: Developing skills for e-mobility
The shift towards electrified vehicles also brings
changes to employee roles and required skills. With the flexible
ramp-up of e-mobility at BMW Group plants, employees can gradually be
prepared for new job content.

“Despite technical and structural innovations, our focus is always on
people. We take pride in our employees’ expertise and experience, and
their dedication to continuous improvement. It is thanks to their
commitment that we are able to consistently deliver premium-quality
vehicles,” emphasises Weber. Additional expertise will be developed
and retained at the company through extensive further training and
workforce flexibility. Last year alone, nearly 25,000 employees
completed e-mobility training. Plant Munich is currently holding its
third industrial electrician qualification course, conducted in
cooperation with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK).

In recent years, around 5,500 jobs have been created across the BMW
Group production network for the current and upcoming generation of
e-drives. More than three quarters of these positions were filled
through internal reorganisation.

Munich. A new era is dawning for BMW Group Plant
Munich: from 2026, the iconic parent plant will produce the Neue
Klasse sedan. Just one year later, the factory will manufacture
nothing but all-electric models, making the Munich plant the first
location in the BMW Group’s existing production network to have
successfully completed the transformation to E-mobility from the end
of 2027.

“The Munich plant is an excellent example of our ability to adapt. We
are investing € 650 million here and will produce exclusively
all-electric vehicles in our parent plant from the end of 2027,” says
Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG,
Production. “Last year alone, six all-electric models went into
production. At the same time, we also set a production record, proving
that we are simultaneously able to both deliver and shape the future
in our production network.”

Peter Weber, Director BMW Group Plant Munich, adds: “Munich is the
beating heart of BMW. The plant in Munich is innovative and adaptable.
As in the 1960s, a Neue Klasse is again laying the foundation, on
which our plant is reinventing itself. The fact that this
comprehensive transformation is taking place at the same time as
roughly 1,000 vehicles per day are currently being manufactured is
common practice in Munich and is possible thanks to the outstanding
performance of all our employees. We are delighted to be guiding the
Munich plant into a fully-electric future – starting with the Neue
Klasse sedan.”

Smooth transition to electromobility, as the era of combustion
automobiles from Munich ends in 2027

BMW Group Plant Munich is a prime example of the fluent transition to
the era of electromobility. In 2015, the first plug-in hybrid models
from the BMW 3 Series were manufactured on the same production line as
combustion vehicles. In 2021, the BMW i4 became the first all-electric
vehicle to be produced on the same production line. Nowadays, every
second vehicle that rolls off the production line has an all-electric
drive system.

From 2026, production of the Neue Klasse in the Munich plant will
initially run parallel to production of current models. A good year
later, from the end of 2027, the BMW Group’s parent plant will be the
first existing site in the global production network to manufacture
exclusively all-electric vehicles, having been transformed
accordingly. As such, the era of vehicles with combustion engines in
Munich will draw to a close 75 years after the launch of the BMW 501
in 1952.

After the start in the new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, and in Munich,
the Neue Klasse vehicles will also be produced in Shenyang, China, and
San Luis Potosí in Mexico.

Extensive modifications offer long-term security for location

Over the course of a history stretching back more than 100 years, BMW
Group Plant Munich has undergone many changes and repeatedly
reinvented itself. Together with the conversion from manufacturing
aircraft engines to automobile construction, the successful
introduction of the Neue Klasse in the 1960s is a milestone in the
list of changes throughout the company’s history.

At the moment, multiple large construction sites are evidence of the
turnaround, as they pave the way for the arrival of the Neue Klasse
from 2026. The € 650 million of investment comprises four buildings,
including a new vehicle assembly line with logistics areas and a new
body shop.

In order to create the space within the limited floor space at the
plant in the heart of Munich, the traditional engine manufacturing has
been moved to Hams-Hall in Great Britain and Steyr in Austria after
roughly 70 years at the parent plant. 1,200 employees have been
trained for different production strategies in Munich or have taken up
employment at other locations in the production network.

As in the 1960s and all other changes since, the current
transformation of BMW Group Plant Munich is taking place whilst
production is still ongoing. Regardless of the construction work,
roughly 1,000 cars roll off the production line every day, including
BMW 3 Series and the BMW i4 – all on the same assembly line.

The extensive reorientation of the plant secures a long-term future
for the site in Munich, and is also a significant investment in
Bavaria as an industrial location.

Digitalisation at the Munich plant in accordance with the
principles of BMW iFACTORY

The principles of BMW iFACTORY guarantee the utmost flexibility,
excellent processes and outstanding integrability at all sites within
the BMW Group – from the completely new plant in Debrecen to the
parent plant in Munich, which is over 100 years old and at which the
transformation is in full swing. BMW iFACTORY is synonymous with the
superb production expertise throughout the entire production network.
One important aspect is a comprehensive digitalisation with a holistic
approach to the interaction between people, processes and systems. It
optimises processes and supports employees with their work. The
implementation takes place in three areas: data science, artificial
intelligence (AI) and virtualisation.

Contato de imprensa: Joao Trincheiras
Tel: +351-21-487-3080
endereço de e-mail: joao.trincheiras@bmw.pt

Press Release,Drive Technologies,Locations,Research & Development,Production,Production Plants,Munich

Munich. At the IAA Mobility 2023 international motor
show in Munich, the BMW Group will be presenting the most recent
highlights of its ongoing transformation in the key action areas of
electrification, digitalisation and circularity. The latest new models
with electrified powertrains from the BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad
brands, plus Vision Vehicles and concepts for individual mobility in
tomorrow’s world all serve to underline the company’s innovative
strength in these fields. As the dawn of a new era in personal
mobility approaches, the BMW Group is set to unveil its latest
highlight, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, which brings together the
Group’s development expertise in the three crucial disciplines for the
future of mobility.

The IAA Mobility show is being staged in Munich for the second time.
For the BMW Group and its brands, this provides an excellent
opportunity to enter into constructive dialogue on the future of
individual mobility with local people, as well as with visitors to the
show from outside Munich and other stakeholders. The IAA Mobility
Summit at the exhibition centre and the BMW Group’s Open Space at
Max-Joseph-Platz in the heart of Munich will be the main arenas where
BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad present their new products on 5 –
10 September 2023. Among the models visitors can acquaint themselves
with here alongside the BMW Vision Neue Klasse is the fully electric
BMW i5. And they can also experience the world premieres of the new
fully electric MINI Cooper, new fully electric MINI Countryman and
BMW CE 02 eParkourer.

Electric, digital, circular – the focus areas of the BMW Group.

The BMW Group’s presence at IAA Mobility 2023 revolves around the
company’s rigorous focus on electric, digital and circular mobility
for the future and the latest progress it has made in these areas. The
BMW Vision Neue Klasse is joined by a selection of new models from
across the Group’s brands whose electrified powertrains, digital
innovations and resource-efficient manufacturing illustrate the
ongoing process of change in a variety of ways.

The new products poised for launch by the BMW brand include the
plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 5 Series. The new
BMW i7 Protection – the first ever all-electric protection vehicle in
the luxury sedan segment – is also making its debut at IAA Mobility 2023.

MINI is unveiling the members of the brand’s new model family for the
first time with the help of two world premieres: the new fully
electric MINI Cooper and new fully electric MINI Countryman will both
be on show at the Open Space site. A new model with all-electric drive
also forms the centrepiece of BMW Motorrad’s line-up at
Max-Joseph-Platz. Conceived as a compact eParkourer with a
trailblazing design, the new BMW CE 02 injects fresh impetus into the
urban mobility scene.

Locally emission-free mobility sets the theme for the models
on show.

The IAA Mobility show will be officially opened on 5 September at
Munich’s exhibition centre. The BMW Group will be represented at its
stand in Hall A2, where the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will be unveiled to
kick off the event. The BMW i7 Protection all-electric protection
vehicle will also be presented for the first time at the IAA Mobility Summit.

The IAA Mobility Summit is taking place under the banner “Experience
Connected Mobility” and is aimed primarily at trade visitors. It will
showcase trends and technological innovations for future mobility over
the course of numerous talks, presentations and panel discussions. One
of the central topics is the use of hydrogen as an energy source for
current and future vehicles. BMW is carrying out pioneering work in
this field with its development and practical testing of a Sports
Activity Vehicle with a hydrogen-powered fuel-cell drive system. The
BMW iX5 Hydrogen is also being exhibited at the Summit.

Locally emission-free mobility is also the dominant theme for the
models awaiting visitors to the Open Space site. BMW has at least one
purely electrically powered representative in all relevant model
segments. The brand is presenting its entire line-up to the public,
ranging from the BMW iX1 compact Sports Activity Vehicle via the BMW
i4 and BMW i5 to the BMW iX and the BMW i7 luxury sedan.

The Open Space at Max-Joseph-Platz can be visited free of charge on 5
– 9 September from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday 10 September from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, BMW Welt will continue to provide an
attractive destination for all automotive enthusiasts during IAA
Mobility 2023. The current model portfolios of the BMW, MINI,
Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad brands are presented here, along with the
latest BMW and MINI Lifestyle collections. Plus, starting on
2 September 2023, BMW Lifestyle together with BMW M GmbH will be
running a GOODS WITH FREUDE pop-up store in the Hofstatt shopping
centre at No. 10 Sendlinger Straße. Located just a few minutes’ walk
away from the Open Space, the store will feature both familiar
lifestyle articles and the new BMW Lifestyle collection.

World premiere: the BMW Vision Neue Klasse.

At IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Group is offering visitors a preview of
the Neue Klasse – the forthcoming generation of models from BMW. The
BMW Vision Neue Klasse brings together innovations from the areas of
electrification, digitalisation and circularity in signature BMW
style. The Vision Vehicle takes design, control/operation, efficiency
and sustainability into a whole new dimension – one that it will be
possible to experience on the road before long.

During IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will be on show
at both the Summit and the Open Space. The new Vision Vehicle
incorporates the latest innovations in the BMW Group’s key
future-focused fields. It therefore builds on the BMW i Vision
Circular and the BMW i Vision Dee – which have already demonstrated
the BMW Group’s development expertise in the areas of circular economy
and digitalisation – and combines their qualities with further new
developments in exterior and interior design, user experience and
powertrain and battery technology.

World premiere: the plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW
5 Series Sedan.

As well as the all-electric BMW i5, the brand is exhibiting two other
model variants with electrified powertrains at IAA Mobility 2023. As
early as spring 2024, two models featuring state-of-the-art plug-in
hybrid technology will be added to the new BMW 5 Series Sedan range.
Their six-cylinder and four-cylinder in-line petrol engines from the
new modular generation of Efficient Dynamics units will each be
combined with the latest BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid
systems. This will result in a notable increase in output and much
sharper power delivery, while also significantly improving efficiency
and electric range compared to the outgoing model generation.

The electric motor purpose-developed for the new plug-in hybrid
system is integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport
transmission together with its power electronics. The highly
integrated drive unit contributes up to 145 kW/197 hp to the maximum
combined output of 360 kW/489 hp in the case of the new
BMW 550e xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 1.1 – 0.8 l/100 km
[256.8 – 353.1 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 22.5 –
20.1 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 24 – 19 g/km in
WLTP cycle, provisional figures) and 220 kW/299 hp for the new
BMW 530e Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 0.8 – 0.6 l/100 km [353.1 –
470.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 21.4 –
18.9 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 19 – 14 g/km in
WLTP cycle, provisional figures).

A BMW-patented innovation has been used to enhance the electric
motor’s power delivery in the new plug-in hybrid models: a pre-gearing
stage enables the nominal torque of 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) to be increased
to effective torque of up to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) at the transmission
input for the motor. The compact electric motor is therefore able to
boost torque by an amount that would normally only be possible using a
larger unit and makes a clear difference both when accelerating off
the line and putting in a rapid burst of speed. Electric range is now
up to 79 – 90 kilometres (49 – 56 miles) in the WLTP cycle for the new
BMW 550e xDrive Sedan and 87 – 101 kilometres (54 – 63 miles) in the
WLTP cycle for the new BMW 530e Sedan.

The lithium-ion high-voltage battery’s space-saving positioning
within the vehicle’s underbody has a beneficial effect on both the
car’s centre of gravity and the capacity of its luggage compartment,
which holds a total of 520 litres in the plug-in hybrid models –
meaning it is just as large as that offered by their purely
combustion-engined siblings. The usable energy provided by the
high-voltage battery has climbed to 19.4 kWh. At the same time,
maximum charging capacity has doubled compared to the outdoing models
and now stands at 7.4 kW, enabling the high-voltage battery to be
fully recharged from empty in 3.0 hours. When hooked up to a
conventional domestic power socket, a full vehicle charge is completed
in 9.8 hours.

World premiere: the BMW i7 Protection.

BMW is presenting a new generation of protection vehicles in the
luxury sedan segment at the IAA Mobility 2023 show. The new BMW i7
Protection (electric power consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 30.0
kWh/100 km, provisional figure) is absolutely unique in this segment,
as it is the world’s first ever certified protection sedan with an
all-electric drive system. Driven by two powerful electric motors, it
meets all the requirements of class VR9 protection without any
limitations, as does the new V8-engined BMW 7 Series Protection (fuel
consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 14.6 l/100 km [19.3 mpg imp];
CO2 emissions: 328 g/km, provisional figures).

Both models blend the integrated protection concept channelled into
the development of the new BMW 7 Series range with outstanding levels
of ride comfort and spaciousness, advanced equipment features and the
unbeatable dynamic prowess for which BMW is renowned. The concept
centres around the new and unique BMW Protection Core, which forms a
self-supporting body structure made from armour steel. This is then
combined with features such as additional armouring for the underbody
and roof, plus armoured glass. The result is customised protection
from attacks with firearms or explosives for at-risk individuals. The
glass in the new protection vehicles even meets the requirements for
the highest class of civilian protection, VPAM 10.

The all-electric BMW i7 Protection is equipped with one electric
motor at the front axle and another at the rear. Together they
generate a combined output of 400 kW/544 hp and maximum combined
torque of 745 Nm (549 lb-ft), and create an electric all-wheel-drive
system. The new BMW i7 Protection sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) from
rest in 9.0 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to
160 km/h (99 mph). The instantaneous, precisely orchestrated power
delivery from the two motors guarantees exceptional traction and
directional stability even when the car is being driven hard and
performing challenging manoeuvres, such as when escaping from an attack.

Tuned and optimised specifically for this model, the chassis
technology also makes allowance for the additional weight of its
armouring, resulting in superbly assured performance in any situation.
Another unique offering for this segment is the inclusion of Integral
Active Steering as standard. This reduces the car’s turning circle,
increases agility when cornering at speed and improves driving comfort
for rear-seat passengers. The 20-inch light-alloy wheels are a further
standout feature. The PAX tyres that also come as standard allow the
car to continue its journey at up to 80 km/h (50 mph) even in the
event of a total loss of pressure.

The latest generation of BMW iDrive based on BMW Operating System 8.5
is fitted, complete with the BMW Curved Display. The system is
intuitive to use and operates in a way familiar to BMW drivers. The
special functions relevant to occupant protection are also operated
via BMW iDrive. The new protection vehicles can also be tailored
precisely to any purpose, with items including a fresh-air supply
system, a fire extinguishing system, flashing lights, radio
transceivers and flag poles for when the car is on official duty, plus
other special customer-specific options.

Trailblazing: the BMW iX5 Hydrogen.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen presented at IAA Mobility 2023 provides further
evidence of the company’s superlative innovative strength in the field
of drive technology. A pilot series of the Sports Activity Vehicle
with hydrogen fuel-cell drive, developed on the basis of the current
BMW X5, has entered service for demonstration and test purposes with
various target groups around the world. This allows selected test
groups who haven’t been involved in the development process to get
behind the wheel of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen and gain a direct impression
of its attributes for the first time.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is equipped with the latest, fifth generation of
BMW eDrive technology. The highly integrated drive unit at the rear
axle draws its energy from a high-performance battery with li-ion
technology that was specially developed for the hydrogen fuel-cell
vehicle and generates maximum output of 295 kW/401 hp. The electric
motor also doubles as a generator that feeds energy back into the
high-performance battery on the overrun or under braking.

The model’s two 700-bar tanks made from carbon-fibre-reinforced
plastic (CFRP) together hold six kilograms of gaseous hydrogen and can
be refilled in three to four minutes. A chemical reaction takes place
in the fuel cell system between the hydrogen and oxygen from the air,
through which the electric power for the electric motor is generated.
The BMW iX5 Hydrogen achieves a range of 504 kilometres (313 miles) in
the WLTP cycle without having to refill the tanks. The
hydrogen-powered SAV completes the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in
under six seconds and goes on to reach a top speed in excess of
180 km/h (112 mph).

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen combines long-distance capabilities and short
refuelling stops with zero tailpipe emissions and hallmark BMW driving
dynamics. Its hydrogen fuel-cell technology has the potential –
provided the necessary basic conditions are in place – to serve as an
additional pillar in the BMW Group’s future powertrain portfolio. As
part of its ongoing transformation, the BMW Group is following an
approach that embraces all technologies when it comes to drive
systems. The company is therefore readying itself for differing
customer requirements, infrastructure standards and political and
regulatory frameworks in the various regions of the world. This degree
of flexibility puts the BMW Group in a position to react quickly to
changing requirements in the markets in any situation and to present
as many customers as possible with an appropriate model offering at
all times.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

Munich. BMW Group Plant Munich has had two busy days,
and that despite the fact that not a single car has been built! To
mark the 100th anniversary of the Munich parent plant, the
BMW Group invited all employees from the Munich site to the
anniversary celebrations along with their friends and family. Over the
course of Saturday and Sunday, around 70,000 people came and enjoyed
an exciting stage program, spectacular driving events and special
insights into production.

“Together we can make history! In the past, it is you who have always
kept our home plant firmly on the road to success and it is you who
will now lead it into the future together,” said Milan Nedeljković,
Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Production. Plant Munich
is currently undergoing major renovations for the start of production
for the Neue Klasse in 2026, including the construction of three new
buildings for the body shop and assembly complete with logistics
areas. The head of Production made sure to emphasize: “We are quite
literally leaving no stone unturned here, and yet you are keeping the
plant up and running smoothly. This ambidexterity is exactly what
makes the plant so special.”

Clocking up hours worked for charity donations

Ilka Horstmeier, Member of the Board of Management
of BMW AG, People and Real Estate, also took the time to highlight the
great dedication of the BMW workforce as she thanked the more than one
thousand volunteers from all BMW locations across Munich who ensured
the anniversary went off without a hitch and with such a great
atmosphere. The hours the employees put in across both days were not
remunerated but were instead donated in cash to five Munich charities.

“The dedication shown by our employees is extraordinary. After all,
we not only celebrated our plant anniversary, but also gave a helping
hand to many Munich residents in need, raising a total of 150,000
euros for social causes. This reaffirms that we are a responsible
employer that also takes responsibility for society. That’s just the
BMW way,” added Horstmeier. Representatives from the Münchner Tafel,
the Arche, Verein Zivilcourage für Alle, Horizont e.V. and the crisis
intervention team at ASB München all accepted the donation vouchers in
person from Ilka Horstmeier, Plant Manager Peter Weber and Martin
Kimmich, Chairman of the General Works Council.

To symbolize the structural and technological transformation of Plant
Munich, the Member of the Board for Production, Plant Manager and
Works Council Chair filled a time capsule that will be integrated into
the construction area of the new body shop. Construction of the new
hall is set to begin imminently. “Despite the new work underway, we
will continue to produce more than 900 premium quality BMWs every day
at Plant Munich. We all have to show great flexibility and commitment
to achieve this, but we see this challenge as an opportunity to shape
a successful future for our plant. And there’s no doubt in my mind
that, with such a motivated and highly qualified team, the plant’s
transformation to e-mobility and the iFACTORY can only succeed,” said
plant manager Peter Weber.

By employees for employees

BMW employees not only handled most of the
organization of the BMW anniversary celebrations themselves, but they
also designed a diverse program over more than 25 different stations.
Whether blues, rock, pop, cabaret or classical music – talent from
various BMW locations performed on the two event stages. Plant Munich
employees also gave tours of the production halls, presented their
workplaces, introduced innovations, and informed guests about ongoing
structural changes at the plant.

A former Plant Munich employee treated guests to another highlight:
comedian and composer Willy Astor, who in his youth completed his
training as a toolmaker at the plant, took to the BMW anniversary
stage to delight visitors with his latest show.

Also popular were the shows from the “RedBull Driftbrothers”, the
children’s motorcycle course and the driving sessions from the BMW
Driving Academy. Plus, guests were able to tuck into a variety of
culinary delights at around 30 food trucks as well as in the plant’s
very own restaurant.

“It’s just incredible what the workforce has put together for these
two days,” says Martin Kimmich, Chairman of the BMW General Works
Council. “This reflects the one-of-a-kind BMW team spirit as well as
our colleagues’ keen interest in social responsibility. As an
important employer for the city located right in the heart of Munich,
we were delighted to provide an insight into the transformation of our
main plant for the future.”

A good neighbor

As a production site right at the heart of the Bavarian state capital
of Munich, the plant also plays an important role as a neighbor.
Alongside supporting local associations and organizations in the north
of Munich, the company places a great deal of value on maintaining
personal dialogue with the plant’s immediate neighborhood. Around 80
neighbors accepted the invitation to attend the BMW anniversary
celebrations and were given a guided tour of the plant site.

The “BMW Munich – Urban Production” architectural competition, which
was successfully completed last year, also serves to promote good
relations and a livable environment. The designs from the two winning
firms take the plant’s unique location at the heart of the city into
account and aim to make the entire complex visibly more accessible and
open to the neighborhood. This vision for the future of the Munich
production site lays the groundwork for the development of a
big-picture plan beyond 2026.

Both the big-picture plan and the structural optimizations already
planned to produce the Neue Klasse help align Plant Munich with the
principles of the BMW iFactory for the future: “LEAN. GREEN. DIGITAL.”
Together, they guarantee maximum flexibility, outstanding processes,
and top integration potential over the coming decades for this special
location – the BMW Group’s 100-year-old parent plant.

(Editorial note: The BMW anniversary celebrations were actually held
in Plant Munich’s 101st year. When planning started back in
2021, the organizational team were unable to predict whether an event
for the originally planned date of fall 2022 would be possible due to
potential Covid restrictions.)

Contato de imprensa: Joao Trincheiras
Tel: +351-21-487-3080
endereço de e-mail: joao.trincheiras@bmw.pt

Press Release,Locations,Events,Research & Development,Production,Production Plants,Munich
