For the first time ever, all teams and riders gathered in the Thai capital to launch the season alongside the fans. At the heart of it all: the new BMW M5 Touring MotoGP™ Safety Car, which will join the BMW M5 MotoGP™ Safety Car in 2025 to lead the safety fleet in the most exciting sport on earth.

The MotoGP™ Season Launch in the newly developed district One Bangkok provided the perfect stage for the official unveiling of the new Safety Car. The event began with a parade of all MotoGP™ riders, led by the BMW M5 Touring MotoGP™ Safety Car. Another highlight of the event was a spectacular stage show, streamed live to fans worldwide and free to attend for everyone on site.

BMW M has been the Official Car of MotoGP™ since 1999, supplying the series with a fleet of Safety Cars, Medical Cars, and Safety Bikes as part of this partnership. The new Safety Car is based on the BMW M5 Touring (combined fuel consumption: 2.0 l/100 km and 30.7 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 46 g/km; fuel consumption with depleted battery: 10.9 l/100 km according to WLTP; CO₂ classification: combined B, with depleted battery G)*, which was launched in November 2024. It is the third current BMW M model to feature an M HYBRID powertrain. Together, its two motors generate a peak output of 535 kW (727 hp) and a maximum torque of 1,000 Nm. To prepare it for racetrack use, the BMW M5 Touring MotoGP™ Safety Car has been modified accordingly.

The livery, like that of the BMW M5 MotoGP™ Safety Car, is inspired by the design of the BMW M Hybrid V8 race cars competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship and the IMSA series in North America. This connection perfectly embodies BMW M’s commitment to hybrid technology and its core philosophy: Born on the race track, made for the street.

The new BMW M5 Touring MotoGP™ Safety Car will remain on display in Bangkok until the start of the 2025 MotoGP™ season before making its on-track debut at the first race weekend from 28th February to 2nd March in Buriram, Thailand.

Dingolfing. Today, four months after the start of production for the BMW M5 Sedan, series production of the new BMW M5 Touring got underway at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing (consumption weighted, combined: 2.0 l/100 km and 30.7 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions weighted, combined: 46 g/km; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 10.9 l/100 km (WLTP); CO2 classes: weighted, combined B; with discharged battery G). The new model combines exceptional driving dynamics with versatile space for everyday life, leisure and travel.

It is the third current BMW M vehicle to feature an M HYBRID drive train in which a high-rpm V8 power train is complemented by an e-drive with extremely responsive power development. Together, the two engines deliver a peak performance of 535 kW/727 hp and a maximum torque of 1,000 Nm.

“With the BMW M5 Touring, the new BMW 5 Series family ‘made in Dingolfing’ is complete,” says Plant Director Christoph Schröder. “We can now offer customers of our core model series worldwide a unique variety of drive technologies and body variants.”

With the addition of the new model, the location also continues to expand its production of BMW M high-performance cars. Alongside the BMW M4 Coupé and Convertible, the BMW M8 Coupé, Convertible and Gran Coupé and the BMW M5 Sedan, the new BMW M5 Touring is the seventh
M derivative to come off the Dingolfing production line. BMW M models account for around six percent of Dingolfing's total production.

The M Performance fuel tank cap carbon fibre turns every refuel into a small pit stop. It is made from high-quality carbon fibre and has M Performance badging in brushed aluminium. The interior of the new BMW M5 Touring already majors on sporting appeal as standard, but it too can be given a finishing touch in the form of the M Performance floor mats. Since 1999, BMW M has provided the fleet of high-performance safety cars for motorcycle racing’s premier class as the “Official Car of MotoGP™.” The latest highlight in this fleet, the BMW M5 MotoGP™ Safety Car, will debut this weekend. It was unveiled on Thursday evening during a special customer event for the introduction of the new BMW M5 model range at the House of BMW in Milan, Italy, by Sylvia Neubauer, Vice President of Customer, Brand, and Sales at BMW M GmbH together with Massimiliano Di Silvestre, CEO of BMW Italia, that hosted the event. With this innovative lead car, BMW M GmbH continues to rely on cutting-edge hybrid technology, as it did with the BMW XM Label Red Safety Car. The BMW M5 Safety Car will make its racetrack debut on Saturday at the Grand Prix in Misano.

“We are in the midst of our 26th season of BMW M as the ‘Official Car of MotoGP.’ We are proud of our long-standing partnership with MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports, and we have always aimed to ensure safety with the most innovative high-performance automobiles when the world’s best motorcycle racers take to the track. The new safety car is based on the BMW M5 (energy consumption, weighted, combined: 1,7 – 1,6 l/100 km [166.2 – 176.6 mpg imp] and 25,5 – 25,0 kWh/100 km according to WLTP; CO2 emissions, weighted, combined: 39 – 37 g/km according to WLTP; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 10,3 – 10,2 l/100 km [27.4 – 27.7 mpg imp] according to WLTP; CO2 classes: weighted, combined B, with discharged battery G), which had its world premiere in July at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and will be launched globally in November. This top-class model with electrified drive is perfectly suited for use as a safety car. Under the bonnet, a model-specific version of the M HYBRID system combines a high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor to deliver a maximum output of 535 kW/727 hp. This M Power is transmitted to the road via an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive all-wheel drive. Numerous other M technologies ensure perfect driving dynamics in all situations.

The production model already impresses with its exterior. The M-typical design for high-performance automobiles has been reinterpreted, with wide wheel arches and side skirts, a sculpted front apron, and model-specific surface design in the C-pillar area giving the BMW M5 an athletic appearance. The BMW M5 Safety Car for MotoGP™ also features a special graffiti-design livery.

“This special livery is derived from the design of our BMW M Hybrid V8 race cars, which BMW M Motorsport competes with in the FIA World Endurance Championship with races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans and in the IMSA series in North America,” explained Sylvia Neubauer at the presentation. “This perfectly embodies our commitment to hybrid technology. As with all safety cars, BMW M GmbH has made specific modifications for racetrack use. Numerous BMW M Performance Parts have been installed, including carbon front attachments, an aramid rear diffuser, carbon side skirts, carbon-titanium tailpipe trims, and a carbon fuel filler cap.

Special features include the safety car roof bar, a front splitter, Recaro seats, 6-point racing harnesses, a fire extinguisher, and a fuel suction pump for overseas transport. On Saturday (7th September), the new BMW M5 MotoGP™ Safety Car will hit the track for the first time at the Gran Premio Red Bull di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini at Misano.

Among the numerous guests at the presentation in Milan was Valentino Rossi. As a nine-time motorcycle world champion, he is well acquainted with BMW M’s involvement in MotoGP™, and after switching to four wheels, he has been celebrating successes as a BMW M works driver in the BMW M4 GT3 since the 2023 season.

Since 2003, the BMW M Award has recognized the MotoGP™ rider with the best qualifying results. Riders earn points for their qualifying positions at each Grand Prix weekend, mirroring the points system used in the races. The rider who accumulates the most points by the end of the season wins the coveted BMW M Award. The record holder for the BMW M Award is Marc Márquez, who won the accolade seven times in a row from 2013 to 2019. In the past two years, Francesco Bagnaia has claimed the prestigious prize.

The new BMW M5 will be unveiled at BMW’s trackside stand on Thursday, 11 July 2024 as an early highlight of the four-day event. The new BMW X3 will also celebrate its world premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024. Now in its fourth model generation, the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) impresses not only with its visually striking design and innovative digital technology, but also with significantly enhanced agility and dynamic prowess. This increase in sporting appeal is embodied most prominently by the BMW X3 M50 xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 8.3 – 7.7 l/100 km [34.0 – 36.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 189 – 175 g/km in the WLTP cycle; CO₂ classes: G – F), which will be presented at the Festival of Speed. The Hill beckons: BMW lines up with new machinery, racing legends and famous drivers and riders.

The races up the famous hill in the Duke of Richmond’s Goodwood estate will provide the Festal of Speed programme with some spectacular highlights once again this year. Demo runs featuring cars and motorcycles from a wide range of eras bring to mind the private hill climb held for the first time in 1936 in the grounds of Goodwood House. Among the members of the current BMW M GmbH portfolio set to take the Hill by storm alongside the new BMW M5 are the special-edition BMW M4 CS and BMW XM Label Red (energy consumption weighted, combined: 2.0 – 1.6 l/100 km [141.2 – 176.6 mpg imp] and 33.5 – 32.5 kWh/100 km in the WLTP cycle; CO₂ emissions weighted, combined: 45 – 35 g/km in the WLTP cycle; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 12.9 – 12.3 l/100 km [21.9 – 23.0 mpg imp] in the WLTP cycle; CO₂ classes: weighted, combined B, with discharged battery: G). And the latest endurance racing car from BMW M Motorsport, the BMW M Hybrid V8, will also be let loose in the unfamiliar surroundings of a hill climb sprint.

BMW Group Classic’s historic motor sport department will also bring a host of legendary vehicles and well-known drivers and riders to the event. Leading the way will be the BMW V12 LMR, which celebrated overall victory in the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1999. Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, will get behind the wheel on the 25th anniversary of this famous win. 55 years have now passed since Dieter Quester was crowned European touring car champion in a BMW 2002 TIK. This was the first championship title claimed by a BMW with a turbocharged engine. Piloting the 2002 TIK in the hill climb at this year’s Festival of Speed will be BMW Group Classic brand ambassador Prince Leopold of Bavaria. And memories of great victories will also be rekindled for legendary BMW touring car driver Johnny Cecotto: 30 years on from winning the Super Touring Car Cup, he will be reunited with his BMW 318i STW at Goodwood.

BMW Group Classic will compete in the hill climb events for motorcycles with a pair of historic racing bikes. The BMW RS 54 from the 1950s will be joined by a meticulously restored replica of the BMW R 255/1 with supercharged engine. In 1939, Georg “Schorsch” Meier rode a R 255/1 to victory in the Senior Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man, becoming the first foreign rider to do so on a non-English bike. Among the riders lining up on these historic models will be Markus Flasch, Head of BMW Motorrad, who will also be piloting the BMW R20 concept through the twists and turns of the course. The latest concept bike from BMW Motorrad was unveiled to the public for the first time just a few weeks ago at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. Its design places the new 2.0-litre Big Boxer engine at centre stage, and the hill climb will now also provide it with the platform to showcase its power development and acoustic charms.

New models, one-off creations, concept cars and Vision Vehicles among the attractions at trackside.

Visitors to the Festival of Speed 2024 will be greeted by alluring examples of design, dynamism and innovation away from the track as well as on it. Among the models on show at the BMW M GmbH trackside stand will be the new BMW M135 xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 8.1 – 7.6 l/100 km [34.9 – 37.2 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 184 – 173 g/km in the WLTP cycle; CO₂ classes: G – F), the new BMW M2 (fuel consumption, combined: 10.2 – 9.6 l/100 km [27.7 – 29.4 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 231 – 218 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO₂ class: G) and the BMW M3 Touring (fuel consumption, combined: 10.4 – 10.3 l/100 km [27.2 – 27.4 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 235 – 233 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO₂ class: G).

In honour of designer Marcello Gandini, who passed away in spring this year, BMW Group Classic will also be presenting the BMW Garmisch. This coupé is a rebuild of a concept car that Gandini had designed for coachbuilder Bertone but that then vanished without trace following its premiere at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show.

The vehicles on display at the Stable Yard will also include the BMW Vision Neue Klasse – which offers a look ahead to the upcoming generation of fully electric models from BMW – and the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA, a one-off design whose exterior displays motifs from South African artist Esther Mahlangu using innovative colour-change technology. Also produced in just a single example so far, the BMW Concept Skytop has an exclusive blend of aesthetic appeal and dynamic potency. This design study is making only its second ever public appearance, following on from its world premiere at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. An open-top two-seater, the BMW Concept Skytop symbolises the joy of luxury travel. With design details recalling classic models like the BMW Z8 and BMW 503 and a super-powerful V8 from BMW’s current engine line-up, it bridges the past and the present in hallmark Festival of Speed style.

The fuel consumption, CO₂ emissions, electric power consumption and operating range figures are determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable. They refer to vehicles in the German market. Where a range is shown, the figures take into account the impact of any optional extras.

All values were calculated based on the new WLTP test cycle. WLTP values are taken as the basis for determining vehicle-related taxes or other duties based (at least inter alia) on CO₂ emissions as well as eligibility for any applicable vehicle-specific subsidies. Dingolfing. A few days ago, BMW M GmbH unveiled the new BMW M5 (Energy consumption, weighted, combined: 1,7 – 1,6 l/100 km [166.2 – 176.6 mpg imp] and 25,5 – 25,0 kWh/100 km according to WLTP; CO2 emissions, weighted, combined: 39 – 37 g/km according to WLTP; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 10,3 – 10,2 l/100 km [27.4 – 27.7 mpg imp] according to WLTP; CO2 classes: weighted, combined B, with discharged battery G) and released the first official pictures. Today, the new high-performance sedan celebrated its official start of production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. The seventh-generation BMW M5 is the first to come off the assembly line with an electrified drive train: The model-specific M HYBRID system combines a V8 engine with an e-drive to deliver a system output of 727 hp, enabling it to sprint from 0 to 100 in just 3.5 seconds. The vehicle’s high-voltage battery, with an available energy content of 18.6 kWh, offers an electric range of 67 to up to 69 kilometres (WLTP) that is unique among its competitors.

“We are proud to be building the latest generation of the iconic M5 here in Dingolfing,” says Plant Director Christoph Schröder. The site already delivered the pre-assembled bodies for the very first BMW M5 models, back in the 1980s, which were then completed by hand at M GmbH in Garching. Since the second generation – or, to be more exact, 1988 – the high-performance sports car has been built entirely at the plant in Lower Bavaria.

Central components for the new BMW M5 are also produced on site or supplied by nearby component plants. Schröder refers to this as an “under on roof production approach”. For example, the chassis of the BMW M5, specially tailored to the model, comes from Dingolfing component plant 02.10, while the high-voltage battery is assembled next door at plant 02.20, the Competence Centre for E-Drive Production. The carbon-fibre roof is supplied by the plant in Landshut, located 30 kilometres away.

A unique aspect of production at the vehicle plant is the modifications already made in the body shop. Based on the BMW 5 Series standard production body, the BMW M5 features additional measures to stiffen the body structure and a specially widened body with flared wheel arches, thus also enabling the integration of the M-specific rear axle.

In the paint shop, customers can choose between ten standard and 150 special-request finishes for their new BMW M5.

The new BMW M5, like its predecessor, is assembled alongside other BMW 5 Series, BMW 4 Series and BMW M4 models on the same production line, where it is completed with specific equipment options, such as the CFRP rear spoiler, M steering wheel and M multifunction seats.

Over the coming weeks, production at the plant will gradually ramp up to several dozen BMW M5 vehicles per day. The European market launch of the new model is scheduled to get underway from 2 November 2024. By then, another new model will already be celebrating its premiere at Plant Dingolfing: the new BMW M5 Touring, which expands the BMW M GmbH offering and completes the new BMW 5 Series range.

The imposing power delivery and emotionally engaging performance experience served up by the new BMW M5 are accompanied by a new interpretation of the high-performance car design for which M is renowned. Prominent wheel arch and side skirt extensions, the sculptural front apron and model-specific surfacing around the C-pillar – including an embossed “M5” logo for the Hofmeister kink – give the car an athletic appearance that helps to differentiate it more clearly than ever from the BMW 5 Series Sedan. At the same time, an unusually high proportion of surfaces painted in body colour create a puristic appearance with stylish references to its superior dynamic talents.

As such, the exterior design – like the ambience of the luxurious interior, which is enhanced with M-specific features – accentuates the multi-layered character of the new BMW M5. Its sense of poise and assurance is fuelled by vast reserves of power that can be summoned at any time. Kept discreetly in reserve during relaxed, electric-only cruises, this performance comes vividly to the fore as the BMW M5 reveals the “sporty sedan” side to its personality over longer distances – and is unleashed in full during sessions on the track.

The M HYBRID system, plus power transmission and chassis technology tuned to its specific performance characteristics, give the new BMW M5 transverse and longitudinal dynamics unparalleled in this market segment. Together with its similarly outstanding elasticity, the new BMW M5 takes M performance into a new dimension.

The world premiere of the new BMW M5 will take place at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in England in July 2024, with production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing beginning the same month. The worldwide market launch of the new BMW M5 will start in November 2024 and be accompanied by the introduction of the new BMW M5 Touring at the same time. The most important sales regions for the high-performance sedan are North America and Europe. The USA is the single biggest individual market by some distance, followed by Great Britain, Germany, South Korea, China, Japan and Canada.

M HYBRID drive system in the new BMW M5: intoxicating performance, impressive electric range.

The M HYBRID drive system in the new BMW M5 brings a 4.4-litre
V8 engine with classical high-revving character together with an electric motor, whose performance characteristics are tuned specifically for the BMW M5 and which is integrated into the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. The combustion engine benefits from cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology, a cross-bank exhaust manifold and optimised oil separation. It develops maximum output of 430 kW/585 hp and peak torque of 750 Nm (553 lb-ft). The maximum output of the electric motor is 145 kW/197 hp. It has nominal torque of 280 Nm (206 lb-ft), but a pre-gearing stage allows effective torque at the transmission input to be increased to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft).

The combination of combustion engine and electric motor adheres to the same principle as the drive system in the BMW M Hybrid V8 endurance racing machine. The ability of the electric motor to generate its power instantly and the intelligently controlled interplay of the combustion engine and motor ensure the M HYBRID system responds without delay to every movement of the accelerator. The linear power delivery typical of BMW M models is found here in particularly compelling form. The eight-cylinder engine can spin to a maximum 7,200 rpm as the new BMW M5 treats its driver to the sensation of relentless power development into the upper reaches of the load and speed ranges. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph) as standard, but the limiter can be raised to 305 km/h (189 mph) if the optional M Driver’s Package is specified.

The sports exhaust system of the new BMW M5 underscores the performance experience with a multi-faceted and emotionally enthralling engine note. It features electrically controlled, continuously adjustable flaps and the two pairs of dual tailpipes familiar from other M models, each with 100-millimetre trims in Black Chrome.

Providing an acoustic accompaniment to the power delivery of the electric motor is BMW IconicSounds Electric. This M-specific electric drive sound provides authentic responses to movements of the accelerator when the car is operating in all-electric mode. With the relevant drive system configuration, it also generates an engaging track to highlight the arrival of extra electric power on top of the output from the V8 engine.

In all-electric operating mode, the new BMW M5 can hit speeds of up to 140 km/h (87 mph). The high-voltage battery located low in the car’s underbody has 18.6 kWh of usable energy, enabling an electric range of 67 – 69 kilometres (42 – 43 miles) in the WLTP cycle, which is unmatched by any rival. The Combined Charging Unit of the new BMW M5 allows AC charging at up to 7.4 kW.

The power generated by the combustion engine and electric motor is channelled to the road via the all-wheel-drive system M xDrive, whose rear-biased setup is particularly pronounced in 4WD Sport mode. However, the driver can also select 2WD mode. This sends drive exclusively to the rear wheels with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system switched off, which will appeal to experienced drivers who prefer a performance experience of the pure-bred variety. This further developed iteration of M xDrive – like the electronically controlled Active M Differential at the rear axle – is tailored specially to the performance characteristics of the M HYBRID drive system.

Sophisticated chassis technology with M-specific tuning.

The chassis design of the new BMW M5 comprises a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle with bespoke kinematics and elastokinematics, plus a host of other specially tuned components. The electrically assisted rack-and-pinion steering with M Servotronic and variable steering ratio has a rigid connection to the front axle subframe to ensure optimal feedback from the road and a high degree of directional accuracy. In conjunction with the wide tracks and the excellent torsional rigidity of the body and chassis mountings, this combination produces the handling attributes for which BMW M models are renowned, shaped by agility, precision and the linear build-up of lateral forces when the driver is pushing on.

Also fitted as standard are adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers and Integral Active Steering, which steers the rear wheels by up to 1.5 degrees. M-specific tuning, the individually selectable settings and the ability to adjust the dampers at each wheel individually optimise the body’s connection to the road and maximise the car’s spread of talents – from everyday driving comfort to race-ready dynamic prowess. Turning the rear wheels as required improves directional stability at high speed, as well as agility and comfort when manoeuvring.

Traction, agility and directional stability all benefit from near-actuator wheel slip limitation and the networking of all control systems within the integrated transverse dynamics management setup. Both the standard M Compound brakes and optional M Carbon ceramic brakes combine with an integrated braking system that presents the driver with two pedal feel settings. M light-alloy wheels (20-inch at the front axle,
21-inch at the rear) come as standard and are fitted with high-performance tyres.

Assistance systems for assured and comfortable driving.

A much wider selection of standard and optional systems for automated driving and parking than was offered for the predecessor model takes assurance and comfort in day-to-day driving to another new level. Standard specification for the new BMW M5 brings features such as front collision warning, Lane Departure Warning including lane return with steering assistance, the Evasion Assistant, the Attentiveness Assistant and the Speed Limit Info system. The optional Driving Assistant Professional adds Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function together with tech including the Steering and Lane Control Assistant, traffic light detection, automatic Speed Limit Assist and Active Navigation.

The new BMW M5 is equipped as standard with the Parking Assistant including Reversing Assistant. Meanwhile, the optional Parking Assistant Professional allows automated parking and manoeuvring over a distance of up to 200 metres to be controlled from inside the car or by smartphone from outside the car.

Fresh scope for adjusting the driving experience to personal taste.

The control panel on the centre console of the new BMW M5 houses a model-specific composition of buttons which can be used to tailor the driving experience to individual preferences in a variety of ways. The Setup button provides direct access to the configuration of the drive system, Drivelogic, chassis, steering, braking system and M xDrive, as well as the intensity of brake energy recuperation. Two overall vehicle setups can be stored and selected using the M buttons on the steering wheel. The Launch Control function is available in all the M Setup menu settings with the exception of the M xDrive system’s 2WD mode.

Pushing the DSC button activates M Dynamic Mode, which raises the DSC intervention thresholds when it comes to applying brake inputs and reducing engine output. It is also possible to switch DSC off completely. Another button allows the driver to select M Mode. When they switch from the default ROAD setting to SPORT, interventions from the driver assistance systems are restricted to just the essential functions required for sporty driving, as is the content shown in the information display. If the customer specifies the optional M Drive Professional, they can also make use of TRACK mode. Other features of M Drive Professional include the M Laptimer and the Boost Control function, which maximises longitudinal dynamics when executing mid-range sprints and overtaking manoeuvres.

The operating mode of the M HYBRID system can also be adjusted as desired. The new M Hybrid button allows the driver to choose between HYBRID mode – for intelligently controlled interplay between the combustion engine and electric motor to maximise either efficiency or performance, depending on the driving situation – and the ELECTRIC setting, in which the combustion engine is only brought into play by accelerator kickdown or using the gearshift paddles. eCONTROL mode is used for effective brake energy recuperation and maintaining battery charge at a constant level. And M Drive Professional adds DYNAMIC and DYNAMIC PLUS modes to the mix, which prime the drive system and cooling system to keep output at a constantly high level or generate short bursts of maximum output during committed track driving.

Progressive sports car cockpit, M-specific displays on the BMW Curved Display, exclusive ambience.

As well as the M-specific control panel on the centre console, the progressive sports car cockpit of the new BMW M5 also contains a newly designed, flat-bottomed M leather steering wheel with illuminated M buttons, M multifunction seats with a wide range of electric adjustment and the BMW Curved Display which, like the standard BMW Head-Up Display, includes M-specific content. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional also brings the BMW Maps navigation system and the Augmented View function on the control display.

An upgraded version of BMW iDrive features as standard in the new BMW M5. It is based on BMW Operating System 8.5 and designed squarely for use via touch control and natural speech. The digital tech now also covers the controls for the climate control functions. Temperature selection, airflow intensity, seat heating and – if specified – the steering wheel heating can now be controlled by touch via a menu item in the lower section of the control display or by voice command.

Also playing their part in the exclusive interior ambience are the standard Merino leather trim, the BMW Interaction Bar, four-zone air conditioning, heated front seats, ambient lighting with M-specific interior lighting including Welcome Animation, and the panoramic glass sunroof. And standard specification for the new BMW M5 also provides customers with the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, a wireless charging tray, Comfort Access, an alarm system, automatic tailgate operation and the charging cable Professional.

Among the items on the options list are the M Carbon exterior package, an Alcantara headliner, steering wheel heating, active seat ventilation and a trailer tow hitch. Model-specific BMW M Performance Parts will also be offered for the new BMW M5 from launch. The selection includes M Performance forged light-alloy wheels and exterior components made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).

Munich. The prototypes are carefully disguised, but they cannot conceal their character as high-performance cars. The future generation of the BMW M5 has entered the practical phase of its series development process. The new high-performance sedan from BMW M GmbH is now completing its test drives on public roads, BMW Group proving grounds and racetracks around the world.

Moreover, fans of the BMW M brand can look forward to a further result of the product offensive that will continue into the year 2024. BMW M GmbH has now officially confirmed that with the new edition of the BMW M5, it will be adding a Touring variant to its model range. The perfect symbiosis of M-typical performance, uncompromising long-distance comfort and impressive spaciousness will experience a renaissance in 2024 with the new BMW M5 Touring.

Just like the future BMW M5 Sedan, the Touring variant will also feature a completely newly developed partially electrified drive system. Its M-typical performance characteristics as well as the precisely tuned chassis technology refined with innovative systems facilitate driving dynamics and agility at a level unique in this vehicle class. Thus, BMW M GmbH is steadily progressing on its path to electrification. "We are now also installing a hybrid drive system with typical M performance in other high-performance cars," says Dirk Häcker, Head of Development at BMW M GmbH.

For almost 40 years now, the BMW M5 has been the benchmark for driving dynamics, agility and precision in the high-performance sedan segment. Evolutionary progress, development know-how from racing and pioneering innovations in the areas of drive, suspension, aerodynamics and lightweight construction have shaped the history of the BMW M5. Engines with six, eight and ten cylinders, M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving characteristics, the compound brake system with M Carbon ceramic brakes and M xDrive four-wheel drive are just some of the technological milestones with which this model has repeatedly redefined top performance in a sedan that is unconditionally suitable for everyday use. The seventh generation of the BMW M5 takes up on this – with fascinating innovations for an even more intense performance experience.

The first BMW M5 Touring was launched back in 1992 based on the second-generation BMW M5 Sedan and has since stood for a combination of high performance and everyday practicality on four wheels. In 2007, BMW M GmbH also added a Touring variant to the fourth-generation BMW M5. And currently, the successful launch of the first BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive* also underscores the high appeal of this special vehicle concept in the premium midrange segment of high-performance cars.

Testing of the first prototypes of the new BMW M5 Touring is to commence in the next few days in urban traffic as well as on country roads and motorways around Munich and at the BMW M GmbH headquarters in Garching. The integrated application of all drive and suspension systems will then also be carried out for the new BMW M5 Touring on the Nürburgring's Nordschleife, among other places, with the aim of ensuring the ideal balance of sporting performance on the racetrack and superior ride comfort in everyday driving and over long distances.

BMW M GmbH is expanding its ranks of ultra-sporty CS models with the introduction of the BMW M5 CS (fuel consumption, combined: 11.3 – 11.1 l/100 km [25.0 – 25.5 mpg imp] correspond to NEDC; 11,3  - 10,9 l/100 km correspond to WLTP, CO₂ emissions, combined: 258 – 253 g/km correspond to NEDC, 257 – 248 g/km correspond to WLTP). The limited-run, exclusive special-edition model treats four people to an extraordinary driving experience and blends standout performance attributes with an exclusive and luxurious appearance.

The 4.4-litre V8 engine with 467 kW/635 hp makes the BMW M5 CS the most powerful car in the history of BMW M. Standard features include the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which also offers a 2WD mode for pure rear-wheel drive.

Rigorously applied lightweight design enables a weight saving of some 70 kilograms over the BMW M5 Competition (fuel consumption, combined: 11.3 – 11.1 l/100 km [26.7 – 26.9 mpg imp] correspond to NEDC; 11,3 -10,9 l/100 km correspond to WLTP; CO₂ emissions, combined: 259 – 254 g/km correspond to NEDC; 259 – 249 g/km correspond to WLTP). With retuned bearing springs at the front and rear axle and further refined damper control, the chassis has been adapted to the lower vehicle weight and the increased performance potential of the standard mixed-size Pirelli P Zero Corsa track tyres (front: 275/35 R 20, rear: 285/35 R 20).

The BMW M5 CS sprints from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.0 seconds, and from 0 – 200 km/h (124 mph) in 10.3 seconds. Top speed is an electronically governed 305 km/h (189 mph).

The exceptional driving experience on board the BMW M5 CS can be enjoyed by four people – the driver and front passenger in M Carbon seats and two other passengers in the individual rear seats. The black Merino leather covers (fine-grain for the front seats) also feature eye-catching contrasting panels and decorative stitching in Mugello Red. The integral head restraints – with illuminated M5 logos for the front seats – display an outline of the legendary Nürburgring circuit.

The centre marker perforation with red background on the M Alcantara steering wheel is a classical racing car touch; the gearshift paddles are made from carbon fibre and the steering wheel spokes have Black Chrome trim.

A fixed lightweight cover on the centre console replaces the usual armrest with opening lid. Its black Merino leather is complemented by red double stitching. The colour red is used again for the “CS” badging on the instrument panel and between the bucket-style seats in the rear.

The BMW kidney grille surround on the BMW M5 CS, the “M5 CS” badges on the kidney grille, the M gills on the front wings and the boot lid are finished in the bold colour shade Gold Bronze, as are the 20‑inch M forged wheels in Y-spoke design (front: 9.5 J x 20, rear: 10.5 J x 20). The door sill finishers come with illuminated “M5 CS” badges.

The L-shaped light tubes of the BMW Laser headlights illuminate yellow instead of white when low beam, high beam or the Welcome Light is switched on, bringing successful GT racing cars to mind.

The bonnet, front splitter, exterior mirror caps, rear spoiler, rear diffuser, M Power engine compartment cover and intake silencer are made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). Some elements feature exposed carbon fibre.

Standard specification for the M5 CS includes its stainless-steel sports exhaust system with four unadorned tailpipes and the M Carbon ceramic brakes, whose callipers are painted in Red as standard or Gold as an option.

Available alongside the Brands Hatch Grey metallic paint shade are the exclusive BMW Individual matt paint finishes Frozen Brands Hatch Grey metallic and Frozen Deep Green metallic.

The market launch of the new BMW M5 CS will get underway in spring 2021; in Germany it will be priced at 180,400 euros.

The fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions figures are determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany. The range shown considers the different sizes of the selected wheels/tyres and the selected items of optional equipment, and may vary during configuration.
The values are based on the new WLTP test cycle and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to ensure comparability between the vehicles. The M Performance steering wheel creates a particularly intense bond between driver and vehicle. M Performance sports suspension for M5 models.
The outstanding driving dynamics of the BMW M5 and the BMW M5 Competition can be enhanced even further with the M Performance sports suspension without a change of the damper settings. The coilover suspension allows the vehicle to be lowered by between 5 and 20 millimetres, resulting in a lower centre of gravity, less roll tendency and higher cornering speeds. The optional M Performance sports brake system ensures corresponding deceleration values under maximum load. 20-inch M Performance forged wheels with Y-spoke design and 863 M Ferric Grey matt finish are also exclusively available for the two M5 models. These are manufactured using a sophisticated forging and milling process, offering a unique and patented three-dimensional spoke geometry, milled M Performance lettering as well as a coloured M Logo. Apertures in the spokes reduce air build-up in the wheel, so that less power is required to cut turbulence at high speeds. The first high-performance sedan combined the driving dynamics of a sports car with the comfort and functionality of a top-of-the-range 4-door vehicle. Given the name of BMW M5 and powered by an in-line 6-cylinder engine from the mid-engine sports car BMW M1, the new model started an impressive career in which it is currently the BMW M5 Competition (combined fuel consumption: 10.6 – 10.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 241 – 238 g/km) that sets the pace. Today the BMW M5 is the world’s most successful high-performance sports sedan, continuing to draw its fascination from the racing expertise of the company that is known today as BMW M GmbH. To mark this anniversary, BMW M GmbH presents a special edition of the BMW M5 which has the most powerful engine in the model's history under the bonnet – with an output of 460 kW/625 hp – along with a range of thrilling design and equipment features. This is due to the V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo Technology, a maximum output of 460 kW/625 hp and a maximum torque of 750 Nm along with the particularly direct engine connection, the distinctively configured suspension technology, the all-wheel drive system M xDrive and the Active M Differential in the rear axle transmission. The driving experience offered by the BMW M5 Competition is defined by powerful thrust, optimum traction, outstanding ride stability and handling that can be controlled precisely at all times. It completes the sprint from standing to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds, passing the 200-km/h mark after 10.8 seconds.

The exterior and interior of the BMW M5 Edition 35 Years are as impressive as its driving performance figures. Particularly high-quality M design features developed especially for the Edition model and BMW Individual fittings give the vehicle the status of an exclusive collector’s item. Its striking appearance is particularly ensured by the BMW Individual special finish in Frozen Dark Grey II metallic which has a special pigmentation to create a silk matt surface impression Newly designed 20-inch M light alloy wheels in Y spoke design and the colour Graphite Grey were created exclusively for the Edition model. In addition, the calipers of the standard M compound brake system are finished in high-gloss black. The M carbon ceramic brake system is optionally available with brake calipers finished in gold.

In addition to M multifunction seats and the BMW Individual Merino full leather trim in black with beige contrast seams, particularly exclusive interior flair is created by the trim finishers in aluminium carbon structure gold anodized – which is presented here for the first time. These finely structured, exclusively shimmering surfaces are to be found in the area of the instrument panel, the door trim sections and the centre console. Door sill finishers bearing the inscription “M5 Edition 35 Jahre” and a lasing engraving with the inscription “M5 Edition 35 Jahre 1/350” on the cupholder cover in the centre console are further distinguishing marks of the Edition vehicles.

The BMW M5: at the top of its segment for 35 years.

With its technology and design, the BMW M5 Edition 35 Years provides a particularly authentic embodiment of the philosophy on which the concept of the high-performance sedan is based. The engine, power transmission, suspension and design of the BMW M5 have always formed a carefully harmonised package. Constant engine power delivery across a wide engine speed range is just as much a hallmark feature as the car's agile and safe handling properties on the road, its thrilling driving dynamics on the race track and its stylishly understated appearance.

Even the first generation of the BMW M5 was remarkably inconspicuous, with an appearance that seemed virtually identical to the basic model. This made its engine properties all the more spectacular. The in-line 6-cylinder engine, taken from the BMW M1 and slightly modified, delivered 210 kW/286 hp – 9 hp more than in the legendary mid-engine sports car due to optimised digital engine electronics. “The suspension must always be faster than the engine” – this was the guiding principle for BMW M automobiles at the time, which was why the BMW M5 was given a tightened sports suspension and a high-performance brake system in addition to a reinforced five-speed transmission and a differential lock in the rear axle transmission with a 25 per cent locking effect.

The second generation of the BMW M5 also featured a stylish look: it initially went on the road with an output of 232 kW/315 hp and from 1992 onwards with 250 kW/340 hp. It now included such features as a standard self-levelling suspension on the rear axle to ensure the characteristic balance between race track performance and supreme everyday comfort. In the third generation of the BMW M5 launched in 1998, the two now typical twin rear exhaust pipes first provided a discreet indication of the model’s outstanding engine performance. In addition, the V8 engine with 294 kW/400 hp now required considerably enlarged cooling air inlets at the front. The fourth edition of the BMW M5 featured an impressive engine that was even more spectacular than before: a 10-cylinder power unit derived from Formula 1 developed a maximum output of 373 kW/507 hp. In addition, the V10 took the high-revving concept of the M engines to a new extreme – with more than 8 000 rpm and a highly impressive sound.

With the return to the V8 engine in the fifth generation of the BMW M5, 2011 also saw the introduction of turbo technology. Two turbochargers arranged in the V space between the cylinder benches and a cross-cylinder-bench exhaust manifold were the highlights of the high-revving engine with an output of 412 kW/560 hp, whose power was tamed among other things by 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and an Active Differential Lock at the rear axle. The sixth and latest chapter of the BMW M5 success story is once again defined by a V8 engine. With the new power unit, output is increased to 441 kW/600 hp – in the BMW M5 Competition to as high as 460 kW/625 hp. For the first time, the intelligent all-wheel drive system M xDrive contributes to ensuring that engine power goes onto the road with maximum supremacy. It introduces a whole new level of driving dynamics and ensures that the latest and most powerful BMW M5 is easy for the driver to control – even when driven in sporty style and at high output levels.

The new BMW M5 Competition high-performance sedan (fuel consumption combined: 10.8 - 10.7 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 246 – 243 g/km)* brings together exceptional performance and a suitably rarefied aura with the unruffled ease in everyday use for which BMW M models are renowned. A 19 kW/25 hp hike in engine output over the standard version of the new BMW M5 (to 460 kW/625 hp), even more direct responses and bespoke chassis tuning ensure a race-inspired driving experience at all times.

The market launch of the new BMW M5 Competition heralds the creation of a new product category. In future, BMW M GmbH will offer the most powerful variants of its high-performance cars as standalone models.

The engine: more power and a distinctive brand of performance.

The performance-driving experience that defines the character of the new BMW M5 Competition has a deep emotional richness – and is rooted in the distinctive way its engine goes about its business. The 4.4-litre V8 unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology now produces maximum output of 460 kW/625 hp at 6,000 rpm. Peak torque is 750 Newton metres (553 lb-ft) and can be enjoyed across an extremely wide rev range – from 1,800 to 5,800 rpm (i.e. a 200-rpm wider band than in the standard version of the new BMW M5).

The high-revving instincts of the eight-cylinder engine are therefore harnessed to give the new BMW M5 Competition imposing levels of thrust. The car’s unique power delivery makes its presence felt in reducing the Competition’s 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time to 3.3 seconds. Furthermore,
0 – 200 km/h (124 mph) is over in 10.8 seconds – 0.3 seconds quicker than in the standard version of the new M5.

Standard specification for the new BMW M5 Competition includes a model-specific M Sport exhaust system with tailpipe embellishers in black chrome. This version of the twin-pipe, flap-controlled exhaust generates a strikingly prominent soundtrack. Meanwhile, the addition of a particulate filter to the Competition’s armoury enables a further reduction in emissions.

Specially designed engine mounts optimise responsiveness and cornering characteristics.

The new BMW M5 Competition features model-specific engine mounting, which also has a noticeable impact on its performance abilities. The engine mounts have modified characteristics and an increased spring rate, and the drive unit’s firmer connection to the vehicle’s structure results in even more direct engine response and immediate transmission of its power to the drivetrain. The car also turns into corners with noticeably greater directness and precision on account of the mounting’s stiffer characteristics.

Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive.

The task of relaying the new BMW M5 Competition’s engine power is again handled by the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. Three different modes offering a choice of efficient, sporty or ultra-dynamic driving can be activated using the Drivelogic rocker switch on the gear selector.

Having made its debut in the standard version of the new BMW M5, the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system now also feeds the further increased power of the BMW M5 Competition onto the road with poise, assurance and thrilling alacrity. It generates just enough extra traction to achieve acceleration times worthy of a super-sports car. The centrally controlled interaction between M xDrive and the Active M Differential is largely responsible for channelling the engine’s remarkable output to the car’s wheels without any loss of power en route. The rear-biased setup of the M xDrive system is another contributory factor in the tremendous agility of the high-performance sedan. Standard specification for the new BMW M5 Competition includes exclusive M light-alloy wheels sporting a Y-spoke design in a bi-colour finish. The 20-inch forged wheels are shod with mixed-size tyres measuring 275/35 R 20 at the front and 285/35 R 20 at the rear.

The market launch of the new BMW M5 Competition heralds the creation of a new product category. In future, BMW M GmbH will offer the most powerful variants of its high-performance cars as standalone models.

The engine: more power and a distinctive brand of performance.

The performance-driving experience that defines the character of the new BMW M5 Competition has a deep emotional richness – and is rooted in the distinctive way its engine goes about its business. The 4.4-litre V8 unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology now produces maximum output of 460 kW/625 hp at 6,000 rpm. Peak torque is 750 Newton metres (553 lb-ft) and can be enjoyed across an extremely wide rev range – from 1,800 to 5,800 rpm (i.e. a 200-rpm wider band than in the standard version of the new BMW M5).

The high-revving instincts of the eight-cylinder engine are therefore harnessed to give the new BMW M5 Competition imposing levels of thrust. The car’s unique power delivery makes its presence felt in reducing the Competition’s 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time to 3.3 seconds. Furthermore,
0 – 200 km/h (124 mph) is over in 10.8 seconds – 0.3 seconds quicker than in the standard version of the new M5.

Standard specification for the new BMW M5 Competition includes a model-specific M Sport exhaust system with tailpipe embellishers in black chrome. This version of the twin-pipe, flap-controlled exhaust generates a strikingly prominent soundtrack. Meanwhile, the addition of a particulate filter to the Competition’s armoury enables a further reduction in emissions.

Specially designed engine mounts optimise responsiveness and cornering characteristics.

The new BMW M5 Competition features model-specific engine mounting, which also has a noticeable impact on its performance abilities. The engine mounts have modified characteristics and an increased spring rate, and the drive unit’s firmer connection to the vehicle’s structure results in even more direct engine response and immediate transmission of its power to the drivetrain. The car also turns into corners with noticeably greater directness and precision on account of the mounting’s stiffer characteristics.

Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive.

The task of relaying the new BMW M5 Competition’s engine power is again handled by the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. Three different modes offering a choice of efficient, sporty or ultra-dynamic driving can be activated using the Drivelogic rocker switch on the gear selector.

Having made its debut in the standard version of the new BMW M5, the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system now also feeds the further increased power of the BMW M5 Competition onto the road with poise, assurance and thrilling alacrity. It generates just enough extra traction to achieve acceleration times worthy of a super-sports car. Munich. The BMW M5 (combined fuel consumption: 10.5 l/100km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 241 g/100km*) has been voted "World Performance Car 2018", making this the seventh time BMW has received a World Car Award from the organisation "World Car of the Year". The award ceremony was held on 28 March 2018 at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

There were a total of eleven vehicles in this category – performance-oriented cars of which at least 2,000 units are produced per year and which are available for purchase on at least two continents from 1 January 2017 until 31 May 2018. Selection and voting in all categories was carried out by an international jury made up of 82 leading automobile journalists from 24 countries.

The BMW M5 is fitted with the latest version of the 4.4-litre V8 engine with M Twin Power Turbo Technology. An output of 600 hp and a maximum torque of 750 Nm guarantee supreme propulsion and phenomenal driving performance: the V8 biturbo engine accelerates the M5 from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. The new M5 features the M specific all-wheel drive system M xDrive. Power transmission is taken care of by the new 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic: in conjunction with M xDrive, this ensures the power of the high-revving turbocharged engine is transferred to the road in perfect fashion.

The new BMW M5 (combined fuel consumption: 10.5 l/100 km*; combined CO2 emissions: 241 g/km*) is in record fever: on 11 December 2017, instructor Johan Schwartz performed a sustained drift at the BMW Performance Center in Greer, South Carolina, in the new BMW M5, covering exactly 232.5 miles (374.2 kilometres) on a so-called skid pad, thereby setting a new GUINESS WORLD RECORD for the longest drift in eight hours. Schwartz shattered the previous record by 143 miles (230.1 kilometres).

A custom-built refuelling system developed by BMW in collaboration with the North Carolina-based company Detroit Speed made it possible to drift continuously without a break for the full eight hours as required by the GUINESS WORLD RECORDS. This enabled the BMW M5 to be refuelled during the drift in the same way that fighter jets can refuel in mid-flight – though in this case the operation was performed by hand: a second BMW M5 driven by the Chief Driving Instructor of the BMW Performance Center, Matt Mullins, accompanied the record-breaking M5. Mullins adapted to Schwartz's drifting speed, allowing Matt Butts of Detroit Speed to carrying out the refuelling operation, secured by a safety tether that permitted him to straddle the space between the two moving vehicles by leaning out of the rear window of the second car.

“Although we practised the refuelling several times before the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title attempt, there was very little margin for error,” said Butts. “We’re very excited to have played a part in Johan and BMW recapturing this record.”

A second GUINESS WORLD RECORD was awarded for the longest twin vehicle water-assisted drift: Schwartz and Mullins drifted together for one hour, covering a total of 49.25 miles (79.3 kilometres).

At the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, BMW is now presenting a further highlight: a comprehensive range of exclusive M Performance Parts for the BMW M5. All of these components from the M Performance Parts accessory range were developed using BMW M motorsport know-how and are perfectly harmonised with each other. They not only underscore the high-performance sedan’s sporty and luxurious appearance, but also fulfil functional requirements in terms of aerodynamics, cooling and lightweight construction. Most of these exclusive M Performance Parts for the BMW M5 will be available as retrofit components when the vehicle is launched to the market in March 2018, with further products following in July 2018.

Aerodynamics in perfection. The numerous highlights featured in the accessory range developed especially for the BMW M5 include the package comprising M Performance aerodynamics components. All of these parts are made from lightweight carbon fibre and are elaborately handcrafted.

The following aerodynamics components are available: a newly designed front attachment, side sill attachments, a carbon fibre rear spoiler, a carbon fibre rear spoiler Pro (**) and a rear diffuser. The M Performance Drive Analyser, also derived from motorsport, is an innovative tool for recording and evaluating all important vehicle dynamics data. The system offers comprehensive, professional possibilities to record and analyse, which can be evaluated and displayed on the smartphone. The Drive Analyser determines a variety of relevant indicators such as diverse engine data, speed and peak values, engaged gear, use of accelerator pedal and brakes as well as lateral acceleration. When established, the results can be directly shown on the smartphone as videos or graphic representations via the M Performance Drive Analyser App, which is available free of charge to BMW customers. Furthermore, customers also wishing to capture their drive on film, BMW M Performance Parts offers the Trackfix action camera holder, which can be mounted in the threaded bush of the towing lug either at the front or rear end of the vehicle.

Sporty, dynamic appearance down to the finest detail.

M Performance Parts for the BMW M5 M bring that true racetrack feeling to everyday life – also in terms of visual presence. These include motorsport stripes in typical M colours, which highlight the car’s sporty design even further and lend it its very own individual character. M Performance Parts in use for the MotoGP^TM.

A unique model designed for racetrack use will shortly be celebrating its premiere – the BMW M5 MotoGP^TM Safety Car. Since 1999, BMW M has been the “official car of the MotoGP” and affiliate partner of MotoGP organizers Dorna Sports, deploying its fleet of safety cars to guarantee safety in the world’s fastest motorcycle racing series. Like the predecessor model, the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car is equipped with a multitude of BMW M Performance Parts so that it is able to fully meet the special demands on a lead vehicle in professional motorsport. BMW took innovative and spectacular paths at the presentation of the BMW M5: Thanks to the partnership with Electronic Arts, the world premiere took place for the first time in a video game – in “Need for SpeedTM Payback”. Hence, BMW and Electronic Arts presented the new BMW M5 for the first time at the Gamescom in Cologne, Europe’s largest fair for interactive games and entertainment. In “Need for SpeedTM Payback” (release: 10 November 2017), gamers are, as in reality, able to refine their virtual BMW M5 with M Performance Parts that have been developed specifically for this car. During missions and races gamers can generate virtual money with which they are then able to buy and fit their car with original BMW accessories from the range of M Performance Parts for the BMW M5. These original parts, including components made from high-tech carbon fibre material are, like those fitted to a real BMW M5, perfectly adapted to the vehicle and to each other. So they ensure a noticeable increase in performance and individuality in the virtual world as well.

World premiere: 2018 BMW M3 30 Years American Edition celebrates the 30^th Anniversary of the M3 in the US with a one of a kind design created by BMW Group Designworks, built through BMW Individual (available in USA only).

The BMW M3 (combined fuel consumption: 8.8 (8.3)/100 km; CO2 combined emissions: 204 (194) g/km) is one of the most recognized vehicles in the automotive industry, spanning a long history of success that seems to have no boundaries, today it is still considered as one of the purest high performance street sports cars. With the launch of the first generation BMW M3 in 1986, BMW M revolutionized the sports car as it was, built first and foremost for performance. Originally conceived as homologation special for Group A Touring car racing – as seen in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM), it became the most successful touring car in the history of BMW. Its arrival to the US market in 1987 signaled the birth of the legend in America and to celebrate its first 30 years on the road and track, BMW Group Designworks teamed up with BMW Individual to create a one of a kind design highlighting its Motorsport heritage through American iconography.

Exterior inspired by an original M color and the American flag motif.

With its finger on the pulse of the American experience, BMW Group Designworks has created an American color inspired theme for the 30^th Anniversary of the BMW M3 in the US. What better way to celebrate the US arrival of the M3 than a palette of red, white and blue. The 2018 BMW M3 30 Years American Edition design started life as a 6-speed manual transmission BMW M3 Competition Package but it was quickly transformed into a very special and unique vehicle as noted by its striking exterior color, Frozen Red II Metallic. Although the name of the exterior color is described as “frozen” for the low gloss finish, as if the car is coated with a layer of frost, the heat of the red pigment radiates from within, illuminating the muscular BMW M3 surfaces. Frozen Red II Metallic also speaks to the iconic BMW Henna Red of the original M3 from the 1980’s.

The gilded tone is making a comeback after its eighties hey-day and so complementing the exterior are a set of one-off M Performance Golden light alloy wheel (763M Style – 19-inch front, 20-inch rear), the color inspired by the M3 E30 Warsteiner DTM racing wheels. Also exclusive to the exterior are the M color roof stripes that emphasize the M identity on a premium material, carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), as well as a 30^th Anniversary graphic applied to the rear sunshade.

The exterior is complimented by an all-American, interior tri-tone color scheme.

The interior could not be less special and the designers quickly identified that there is nothing more American than red, white and blue. Open the driver’s door of the 2018 BMW M3 30 Years American Edition and its interior shines through with a continuation of the exterior theme through an expertly crafted tri-color Merino leather interior by BMW Individual. The BMW Individual Opal White Merino leather interior provides a base for red stripes and blocks of blue. The red stripes are expressed in Mugello Red Merino leather and the blue is Fjord Blue Merino leather. Red, white and blue contrast stitching provides a patriotic detail even at the smallest scale. Red stripes can be seen on the side bolster, lower instrument panel and the door panel. Blue is reflected in the seat insert. Opal White surfaces feature red contrast stitching on the seats, lower section of the instrument panel and center door panel, hile Mugello Red facades includes white contrast stitching on the seat bolster stripe, upper section of the lower instrument panel, and armrest upper and lower panels. Fjord Blue is present at the seat insert as well as the seat back shell insert. Black leather makes use of Blue/Red contrast stitching on upper instrument panel on driver’s side, door handle, center console knee bolster and gear shift bag. In addition, the American flag is adorned with a gold fringe when displayed in doors.

The 30^th Anniversary graphic was inspired by the 3 Series 40^th Anniversary graphic. The bold red, white and blue color scheme is tempered by a subtle motif inspired graphic inscribed on the headrest, decorative trim and the rear sun-shade. The achromatic graphic juxtaposes “30th” over the American flag symbolizing the thirty years Americans have been expressing their passion for the BMW M3 in the US.

BMW M Performance Parts round-up the BMW M3 30 Years American Edition. The shock absorbers with contrasting red coil springs featured on the 2018 BMW M3 30 Years American Edition are clearly distinctive features of the adjustable M Performance Sports suspension, allowing the driver to lower the vehicle’s ride height between 5 and 20 millimeters via the adjustable spring plate. The M Performance sports suspension, enables customers to experience racing-inspired driving dynamics in everyday use on the road.

The armrest has a striking appearance thanks to its noble materials and special look: Alcantara and Carbon trimmed with contrasting three-colored M-stitching. Visually, the seam traces a line all the way to the handbrake grip completing the overall M Performance look that extends over the center console and new M Performance shift knob.

One lucky customer will be able to get behind the wheel of this one of a kind 2018 BMW M3 30 Years American Edition as it is expected to be available for purchase after the show conclusion. Las Vegas/Munich. Since its world premiere in August, the new BMW M5 (combined fuel consumption: 10.5 l/100 km; CO2 combined emissions: 241 g/km*) has attracted attention around the globe. At the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, BMW is now presenting a further highlight: a comprehensive range of exclusive M Performance Parts for the BMW M5. All of these components from the M Performance Parts accessory range were developed using BMW M motorsport know-how and are perfectly harmonised with each other. They not only underscore the high-performance sedan’s sporty and luxurious appearance, but also fulfil functional requirements in terms of aerodynamics, cooling and lightweight construction. Most of these exclusive M Performance Parts for the BMW M5 will be available as retrofit components when the vehicle is launched to the market in March 2018, with further products following in July 2018.

Aerodynamics in perfection. The numerous highlights featured in the accessory range developed especially for the BMW M5 include the package comprising M Performance aerodynamics components. All of these parts are made from lightweight carbon fibre and are elaborately handcrafted.

The following aerodynamics components are available: a newly designed front attachment, side sill attachments, a carbon fibre rear spoiler, a carbon fibre rear spoiler Pro (**) and a rear diffuser. All of these components accentuate the BMW M5’s powerful and sporty appearance, whilst ensuring optimised aerodynamic characteristics plus even sportier handling.

Additional components from the M Performance Parts accessory range have been perfectly adapted to the aerodynamics package and now provide additional accents to the BMW M5. The visible carbon fibre front and air breather trim side grilles (**) bearing the M logo and M Performance carbon fibre mirror caps further enhance the carbon fibre look. The M Performance side sill foils accentuate the side sill attachments, optimally rounding off the distinctively sporty look provided by the aerodynamics package.

Latest technology from motorsport brings the BMW M5’s performance onto the road, whilst guaranteeing superior driving behaviour right up to the car’s limit. Thanks to an even sportier set-up, the new BMW M Performance coilover suspension developed specifically for the BMW M5 ensures excellent road-holding and increases driving dynamics resulting from a more direct connection of the vehicle body with the road. Moreover, red coil springs also add further visual highlights. The spring plates are adjustable.

Carbon-ceramic brakes guarantee superior braking characteristics. The sports disc pads are based on highly durable, motorsports-proven racing brake pads and offer advantages such as a shorter braking distances, better brake response as well as higher thermal resilience. Furthermore, the race-oriented interpretation of brake-force distribution provides for enhanced dynamic brake control.

The new BMW M Performance sports exhaust system, which will be on sale exclusively in the USA and Canada, guarantees an emotional motorsport sound. The end muffler is made from titanium with carbon fibre tailpipe trims additionally available. Optimised exhaust gas routing with reduced counter-pressure enhances the beefy V8 TwinTurbo sound and underscores the sporty driving experience.

The M Performance Drive Analyser, also derived from motorsport, is an innovative tool for recording and evaluating all important vehicle dynamics data. The system offers comprehensive, professional possibilities to record and analyse, which can be evaluated and displayed on the smartphone. The Drive Analyser determines a variety of relevant indicators such as diverse engine data, speed and peak values, engaged gear, use of accelerator pedal and brakes as well as lateral acceleration. When established, the results can be directly shown on the smartphone as videos or graphic representations via the M Performance Drive Analyser App, which is available free of charge to BMW customers. Furthermore, customers also wishing to capture their drive on film, BMW M Performance Parts offers the Trackfix action camera holder, which can be mounted in the threaded bush of the towing lug either at the front or rear end of the vehicle.

Sporty, dynamic appearance down to the finest detail.

M Performance Parts for the BMW M5 M bring that true racetrack feeling to everyday life – also in terms of visual presence. These include motorsport stripes in typical M colours, which highlight the car’s sporty design even further and lend it its very own individual character. The elaborately handcrafted M Performance carbon fibre engine cover extension kit is a real eye-catcher and also makes the car’s racing genes visible where its performance has its origins – in the engine compartment. 

This racing look has also been applied to the vehicle’s interior components.

The M Performance steering wheel (**) conveys genuine motorsport feeling thanks to its distinctive geometry and extremely pronounced Alcantara grip area and a carbon fibre steering wheel cover. This is further enhanced by newly designed carbon fibre shift paddles (**) and a carbon fibre gear shift lever cover (**). M Performance floor mats are a perfect complement to the car’s interior ambience. Finest details from the suspension to the interior reveal that the BMW M5 and M Performance Parts have their roots in motor racing, and this also includes the new key wallet for the BMW M5. It comprises a material mix of high-quality Alcantara and carbon fibre and offers a perfect combination of motorsport design and functionality. The M Performance LED logo projector, which completes the accessory range available for the BMW M5, is also a genuine statement.

M Performance Parts in use for the MotoGP^TM.

A unique model designed for racetrack use will shortly be celebrating its premiere – the BMW M5 MotoGP^TM Safety Car. Since 1999, BMW M has been the “official car of the MotoGP” and affiliate partner of MotoGP organizers Dorna Sports, deploying its fleet of safety cars to guarantee safety in the world’s fastest motorcycle racing series. Like the predecessor model, the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car is equipped with a multitude of BMW M Performance Parts so that it is able to fully meet the special demands on a lead vehicle in professional motorsport. These also include M Performance aerodynamics components as well as the BMW M Performance sports exhaust system made from titanium. The BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car will make its first racetrack appearance at the 2017 season final in Valencia, Spain, in November. During the 2018 season, it will be the spearhead of the BMW M MotoGP Safety Car fleet.

The BMW M5: the new high-performance sedan.

Thanks to numerous innovative features, the new BMW M5 offers perfect handling up to the vehicle’s dynamics limits – both on the road and on the racetrack. These include the newly designed M-specific four-wheel drive system M xDrive being employed in the BMW M5 for the first time. It guarantees optimised driving dynamics through precise handling and perfect traction. The heart of the BMW M5, the 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, has been extensively revised by our M engineers. It delivers 441 kW/600 hp and a maximum torque of 750 Nm, offering a significant increase in performance vs. the predecessor models. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h with the new 8-speed Steptronic transmission featuring Drivelogic is just 3.4 seconds. The suspension features M-specific kinematic and elastokinematic elements to help optimise driving dynamics. Weight is also a crucial factor in terms of performance: This has been further reduced, inter alia, by a roof made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic.

“Need for Speed^TM Payback”: Individualisation and high-tech carbon fibre also in the interactive video game.

BMW took innovative and spectacular paths at the presentation of the BMW M5: Thanks to the partnership with Electronic Arts, the world premiere took place for the first time in a video game – in “Need for Speed^TM Payback”. Hence, BMW and Electronic Arts presented the new BMW M5 for the first time at the Gamescom in Cologne, Europe’s largest fair for interactive games and entertainment. In “Need for Speed^TM Payback” (release: 10 November 2017), gamers are, as in reality, able to refine their virtual BMW M5 with M Performance Parts that have been developed specifically for this car. During missions and races gamers can generate virtual money with which they are then able to buy and fit their car with original BMW accessories from the range of M Performance Parts for the BMW M5. These original parts, including components made from high-tech carbon fibre material are, like those fitted to a real BMW M5, perfectly adapted to the vehicle and to each other. So they ensure a noticeable increase in performance and individuality in the virtual world as well.

Munich. Innovative high-performance cars for safety at the highest level of motorcycle racing: the BMW M GmbH has remained true to this principle throughout nearly 20 years of partnership with the MotoGP organizer Dorna Sports, and as the “Official Car of MotoGP”. That is especially true of the new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car, which the company from Munich is presenting as the next highlight in the Safety Car fleet. The new course car is based on the high-performance sedan BMW M5 (combined consumption: 10.5 l/100 km*; combined CO2 emissions: 241 g/km*), which was showcased to the global public for the first time in August. The new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car will debut at the MotoGP season finale in Valencia, Spain (10^th to 12^th November) and will speerhead the Safety Car fleet in the 2018 season.

The features in question include the newly-developed M-specific all-wheel drive M xDrive, which is being used in the BMW M5 for the first time. With precise handling and perfect traction, this guarantees optimised driving dynamics in all manner of situations. The heart of the BMW M5, the 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, has been completely overhauled by the M engineers. It represents another significant increase in performance compared to previous models, with 441 kW/600 HP and maximum torque of 750 Nm in the production M5. The new BMW M5 only needs 3.4 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. Transmission is provided by the new eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox with Drivelogic. The chassis contains M-specific kinematics and elastokinematics elements that contribute to optimised driving dynamics. The weight also plays an important role in performance. This has been reduced further through features such as the lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof.

Painstaking manual work at the BMW M Manufaktur in Garching converted the high-performance base car into the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car, preparing it to appear as the course car in the world’s fastest motorcycle racing series. This process included the addition of numerous BMW M Performance Parts, many of which are available as retrofit parts for the BMW M5 production model. These emphasise the sporty appearance of the Safety Car and meet all the functional requirements for aerodynamics, cooling and lightweight construction. These include various carbon components such as side sills, rear diffusor, rear spoiler, front kidney grille, door mirror caps and air breather slats. The BMW M Performance sport exhaust system is made of titanium, with carbon exhaust tips, and has been designed specially for use on the racetrack.

The transformation of the BMW M5 to a MotoGP Safety Car was completed by the inclusion of special racing features and the necessary safety equipment. The front splitter is a prototype developed specifically for the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car. The bonnet latches are taken directly from racing. The bucket seats from the BMW M4 GTS guarantee a combination of comfort and maximum security for their occupants when being in action on the racetrack. The flat light bar on the roof uses modern LED technology. It is controlled via a specially-developed cockpit panel. Another important signalling system is provided by the flashing front lights, consisting of blue LED lamps in the front grills and flashing corona rings for the headlamps.

The design of the new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Cars also makes a clear racing statement: it is inspired by the design of the new BMW M8 GTE race car, which will compete for BMW at the 24 Hours of Le Mans next year. Series developers from BMW M and the BMW Motorsport department worked hand in hand on development of the BMW M8 GTE. The design reflects this close cooperation.

The partnership between the BMW M GmbH and Dorna Sports dates back to 1999. The provision of the BMW M fleet is the core of the involvement as “Official Car of MotoGP”. There are also a host of other activities. The BMW M Award for the best MotoGP qualifier has been presented at the end of every season since 2003. The new BMW M5 (fuel consumption combined: 10.5 l/100 km [26.9 mpg imp]*; CO2 emissions combined: 241 g/km*) takes BMW M GmbH into new territory, with M xDrive all-wheel drive featuring in the high-performance sedan for the first time. This change of tack sees the M5 exploring new dynamic dimensions and offering greater everyday practicality in all driving conditions. The new car is committed to building on the tradition of a concept – the luxurious four-door business sedan with a taste for the race track – first glimpsed in 1984 with the original BMW M5.

The new M xDrive developed by BMW M GmbH is the most emotionally engaging all-wheel-drive system yet to grace the high-performance segment. It works with a central transfer case with multi-plate clutch and distributes drive fully variably between the front and rear axle, as required. Another ingredient in the car’s supreme traction in all road and weather conditions is the Active M Differential at the rear axle, which also works fully variably and has a locking effect between 0 and 100 per cent.

The character of M xDrive can be adjusted as desired. The driver has five different configurations to choose from based on combinations of the DSC modes (DSC on, MDM, DSC off) and M xDrive modes (4WD, 4WD Sport, 2WD). In the basic setting with DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) activated and 4WD, the system permits slight slip through the rear wheels when accelerating out of corners – and therefore plays its part in giving the new BMW M5 its sporting agility. In M Dynamic mode (MDM, 4WD Sport) M xDrive allows easily controlled drifts. The three M xDrive modes with DSC switched off have been conceived to sate the appetites of keen drivers and primarily for use on the track. Here, the driver can choose from three configurations up to and including pure rear-wheel drive (2WD). This mode allows the driver to pick their own drift angle and treats connoisseurs to driving dynamics in their purest form.

Providing ample power for the new BMW M5 is a 4.4-litre V8 bi-turbo engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. The M engineers have carried out significant revisions to the outgoing model’s power unit. For example, newly developed turbochargers, ultra-efficient indirect charge air cooling and increased fuel injection pressure together help to raise output and, above all, torque. The engine develops 441 kW/600 hp at 5,600 – 6,700 rpm, while a monumental 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque is placed at the driver’s disposal from as low down as 1,800 rpm and remains there until 5,600 rpm. A map-controlled, fully variable oil pump ensures oil is supplied as and when the new BMW M5 needs it, even on the track. The car’s impressive performance figures speak for themselves: 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.4 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in 11.1 seconds (124 mph). Top speed, meanwhile, is an electronically limited 250 km/h (155 mph), but the optional M Driver’s Package can keep the fun coming to 305 km/h (189 mph).

The new BMW M5 channels all that power through a specially tuned eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. In D mode it provides all the comfort and convenience of fully automatic gear changes, but can then also switch to sequential manual shifts. The driver can do this using either the compact selector lever on the centre console or the steering wheel-mounted paddles. Drivelogic allows the driver to adjust the transmission’s characteristics to their personal preferences. For track use, the eight-speed M Steptronic unit serves up lightning-fast shift times, helping to give the new BMW M5 its exceptional agility and dynamic flair.

The suspension of the new BMW M5 is likewise designed to deliver both maximum traction for everyday use and supreme dynamic performance on the track. Like the engine, transmission and M xDrive system, it has been tuned by experts and racing drivers at venues including the world’s most exacting test facility – the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit. Sophisticated stiffening elements in the front and rear structures ensure the body structure is extremely rigid and therefore that the car provides instantaneous feedback, in particular when the driver is pushing hard on the road or track.

The driver can also choose from Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes for the Variable Damper Control (VDC) system – which has M-specific tuning – and the M Servotronic steering. And the engine’s characteristics can also be configured to the driver’s tastes via the Efficient, Sport and Sport Plus modes. The two M1 and M2 buttons on the M leather steering wheel can be used to store two set-ups combining the driver’s preference of engine, transmission, suspension and M xDrive modes, the DSC mode and Head-Up-Display settings. The driver can then activate their preferred set-up by pressing the relevant button.

The new BMW M5 includes revisions to its bodywork over the regular BMW 5 Series to satisfy its challenging dynamic brief. The M engineers have redesigned the broader front side panels and front bumper trim to include larger apertures for the air feeding the cooling systems and brakes. Also new is the rear diffuser. The exhaust system’s quartet of tailpipes are a visual pointer to the power generated by the BMW M5 and also lay on a suitably sporting soundtrack for the job in hand, courtesy of their flap control system. The driver can use a button to adjust the engine sound as desired.

The bonnet, which also has an M-specific design, is made from aluminium and boasts eye-catching sculpture lines. These extend into the extremely lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof – a standard feature of the new M5. The weight savings contributed by the CFRP roof and other components such as the exhaust system help to ensure the new BMW M5 with M xDrive all-wheel drive is lighter than its predecessor.

The new BMW M5 is fitted as standard with M compound brakes, which are lighter than conventional grey cast iron items and therefore also bring down the car’s weight. With blue-painted six-piston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston floating callipers at the rear, plus perforated, inner-vented brake discs all round, the M compound brakes have the speed-shedding power to befit the car’s dynamic potency. The optional M carbon ceramic brakes, which can be identified by callipers painted in a gold colour and shave another 23 kilograms off the M5’s weight, can withstand even greater punishment.

The new BMW M5 comes as standard with polished 19-inch light-alloy wheels (front: 9.5 x 19, rear: 10.5 x 19) in Orbit Grey and M-specific tyres (front: 275/40 R 19, rear: 285/40 R 19). 20-inch items can be specified as an option (front: 275/35 R 20 tyres on 9.5 x 20 rims, rear: 285/35 R 20 tyres on 10.5 x 20 rims). Standard specification for the new BMW M5 also features Merino leather and M seats with electric adjustment. The options list includes newly developed M multifunction seats, which stand out with their bucket-seat-style construction and even better lateral support.

The new BMW M5 can be ordered from September 2017, priced at €117,900, and deliveries will begin in spring 2018. Scheduled for launch on the same sales start date as the standard M5 is the BMW M5 First Edition. This special-edition version – limited to a run of 400 examples worldwide – has BMW Individual Frozen Dark Red Metallic paintwork, is exclusively appointed and costs an extra €19,500 over the standard model.

The new BMW M5 (fuel consumption combined: 10.5 l/100 km [26.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 241 g/km) is the most exciting and emotionally enthralling high-performance sedan from this model range ever released by BMW M. The sixth generation of this fantastically sporty machine will be launched in 2017 complete with the M xDrive system, whose all-wheel-drive technology enables the business sedan’s dynamic prowess to be experienced in even greater depth. Quite apart from its notably enhanced performance, the new BMW M5 also boasts far greater everyday practicality and supreme poise. It therefore constitutes another evolutionary step in every respect for an exceedingly successful vehicle concept that first emerged in 1984 with the launch of the original BMW M5.

A superior drivetrain: M xDrive.

High-performance driving dynamics on the one hand paired with the everyday practicality and qualities of a business sedan on the other: this neatly sums up M’s traditional approach to model development – one which strives to harmonise individual drive components into a flawless whole.

“The core component of M xDrive is a central intelligence unit with M-specific software delivering integrated control of longitudinal and lateral dynamics. The new drivetrain technology – making its debut on the new BMW M5 – therefore combines all of the agility and precision of standard rear-wheel drive with the supreme poise and traction of the all-wheel-drive system,” explains Frank van Meel, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW M GmbH. “As a result, the new BMW M5 can be piloted with the familiar blend of sportiness and unerring accuracy on both the race track and the open road – and in various weather conditions, too.”

The M xDrive system enables a wonderfully fleet-footed rear-biased set-up by only bringing the front wheels into play when the rear wheels aren’t able to transmit any more power to the road and additional tractive force is required. Even when it is being driven in a particularly sporty manner and unleashing high levels of power, the new BMW M5 with M xDrive behaves predictably and can be controlled with ease by the driver, paving the way for an even richer experience of the business sedan’s extraordinary performance capabilities.

The driver can choose from five different configurations based on combinations of the DSC modes (DSC on, MDM, DSC off) and M xDrive modes (4WD, 4WD Sport, 2WD).

The configurations allow the drive system’s characteristics to be tailored to both the driver’s personal preferences and the nature of the journey. Purists can opt for classical rear-wheel drive by completely deactivating the all-wheel-drive system.

All in all, the new drive system engenders class-beating handling dynamics accompanied by unrestricted everyday usability. This is made possible by a central intelligence unit with M-specific software for integrated control of longitudinal and lateral dynamics. The result is optimum performance in each of the different configurations. With the advent of M xDrive, the engineers have succeeded in fusing the classical qualities of standard rear-wheel drive with the benefits of the sports-focused BMW xDrive.

This all adds up to a sense of dynamic flair that astounds even seasoned DTM drivers: “I’m a big M5 fan,” explains BMW works driver Timo Glock, for example. “I often drive long distances and I need plenty of room for my family, but I wouldn’t wish to give up the chance to explore the car’s sporting character. With M xDrive, not only can the new BMW M5 be steered with the usual precision and agility, it also offers me something I really appreciate, living in Switzerland: a noticeable boost to traction and controllability – even when driving in particular environmental conditions, such as wet weather and snow, and in both everyday driving situations and when pushing the car to its performance limits.”

Sportiness and smoothness: eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

In the new BMW M5 the task of relaying the engine’s power falls to an extremely slick eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. Thanks to its incredibly short shift times and optimal ratio spacing, the transmission combines with the new M xDrive system and the further improved turbocharged V8 engine to form a perfectly orchestrated whole.

In addition, the transmission offers impressively smooth start-off characteristics, makes manoeuvring easier and has a wide ratio spread that helps to keep fuel consumption low. The driver has the usual choice of three shift programs, as well as the option of changing gear manually using shift paddles on the steering wheel and even performing sporty multiple downshifts. The eight-speed M Steptronic forms part of a new, finely honed overall package that turns the BMW M5 into a high-performance sedan offering genuine everyday practicality, and also resolves the apparent contradiction between sportiness and comfort.

More powerful and more efficient: the newly improved turbocharged V8 engine.

Lurking under the bonnet of the new BMW M5 is the latest version of the 4.4‑litre V8 engine featuring M TwinPower Turbo technology. The further improved high-revving engine outperforms its predecessor in terms of power output and torque. The enhancements implemented by the engineers include higher injection pressure, new turbochargers, more powerful lubrication and cooling systems, plus a modified, lighter exhaust system, which generates an even clearer rendition of the unmistakable M soundtrack. Thus equipped, the V8 propels the sedan to still greater feats of dynamic performance. However, it is the combination of engine, M xDrive and eight-speed M Steptronic, even more than the upgrading of engine’s technical specifications, that really sharpens the high-performance character of the new BMW M5; it takes the dynamic driving experience to a far higher level than the relatively moderate increase in power alone would allow.

Hardware and software with an M-specific set-up.

The principal hardware components of M xDrive are based on those of the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system and the Active M Differential, while the M-specific driving dynamics control software ensures innovative deployment. The drivetrain has been reinforced for greater rigidity and strength to factor in the high torque, rear-biased configuration and 2WD option. While the transfer case splits a portion of the engine’s drive between the front and rear wheels in a smoothly adjustable ratio (depending on requirements), the Active M Differential is responsible for then distributing the drive between the rear wheels. This active control element is part of the M xDrive system’s functionality and its locking effect can be varied between zero and 100 per cent, as the situation demands. This ensures enhanced traction, agility and handling stability when the car is being driven in a very sporty manner or on roads with differing levels of grip – i.e. exactly when it is needed. Since M xDrive includes M-specific dynamics control capability, stabilising interventions from the DSC system are only required in extreme situations. And so the engine’s huge power can be converted into propulsive force with virtually zero losses. The upshot of all this is that the new BMW M5 can be guided with even greater precision and directional accuracy, responds sensitively and directly to the driver’s inputs and thus requires few steering corrections when driving at the limit.

À la carte handling dynamics: 4WD, 4WD Sport or 2WD.

Every time the engine is started, the BMW M5 defaults to 4WD mode with DSC on. Even in this basic configuration, which initially allows a certain amount of slip at the rear wheels to produce the agility for which M models are renowned, M xDrive offers tangible benefits in situations such as accelerating out of bends. The sedan completes the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) or 200 km/h (124 mph) sprints in the sort of times that leave its predecessor trailing in its wake and will make fans of sporty driving everywhere instantly prick up their ears.

Drivers with an even greater thirst for sporty action can tap into the car’s full performance potential by engaging a second configuration: M Dynamic Mode (MDM) with the M xDrive system’s 4WD Sport mode has been configured for ultra-sporty and dynamic handling. As a result, the new BMW M5 becomes far more agile than in the standard configuration and channels even more drive to the rear wheels. At the same time, MDM permits far greater wheel slip, allowing the enthusiastic driver to send the sedan into a controlled drift and experience the remarkable agility of the new BMW M5 – a familiar trait of M models – to the full. The onset of oversteer is telegraphed in good time while the linear increase of sideslip angle makes it easily controllable, particularly as MDM aids stability at the limits of performance.

With DSC deactivated, there is a choice of three modes (4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD). In 4WD mode, M xDrive has a neutral set-up that lends itself to optimum controllability and outstanding traction. This is of particular benefit on roads that are in mediocre or poor condition. At the same time, 4WD mode also lets the driver explore the dynamic performance capabilities of the new BMW M5 with the DSC control system deactivated.

Engaging 4WD Sport mode alters the M xDrive configuration for even greater agility and sportiness. The blend of absolute precision, delightful handling and phenomenal traction it reveals is a sure-fire route to supreme driving pleasure. 4WD Sport mode’s set-up has been fine-tuned with the assistance of highly experienced specialists and is geared towards track use in dry conditions.

With 2WD mode activated, the new BMW M5 offers the keen driver the experience of driving a high-performance sedan with rear-wheel drive only, delivering a pure form of driving enjoyment that captivates in its own unique way. The combination of incredibly agile handling, terrific feel and exceptional controllability can be attributed to the Active M Differential.

The display and control concept.

The driver-focused cockpit of the new BMW M5 now has an even clearer layout courtesy of the lowered instrument panel with freestanding Control Display. The M-style instrument cluster featuring two classical circular dials and red needles also accommodates an additional digital speedometer on the left-hand side, while the rev counter on the right includes a variable rpm pre-warning field and sporty shift lights when the Head-Up Display is switched on. In the centre of the instrument cluster, the driver will find the readouts for the gear selection, Drivelogic shift program, M xDrive mode and M1/M2 set-up, plus the drive and suspension settings currently engaged. When the Head-Up Display is activated, key information can be projected onto the windscreen so it appears in the driver’s immediate field of view. The graphics of the M view option developed for dynamic driving have been completely revised and M view now also allows navigation information to be displayed, if desired. The projection area of the Head-Up Display in the new BMW M5 has increased in size by around 70 per cent.

On top of the redesigned gear selector can be found the three-position rocker switch for selecting the Drivelogic shift programs. The P button below it for the parking lock is also within easy reach. In typical M fashion, the gears of the new eight-speed M Steptronic transmission can be changed using both the selector lever and the shift paddles on the steering wheel, while drivers can also opt for the automated D mode. In the manual S mode, meanwhile, the M Steptronic allows multiple downshifts, resulting in a significant reduction in shift times when performing sporty driving manoeuvres, such as braking hard into corners.

As on the outgoing model, the M sports steering wheel includes two individually configurable M Drive buttons (M1, M2) that allow the driver to retrieve a previously stored set-up. The buttons have been completely redesigned and are prominently located. This ensures they are even easier to reach and, in customary M style, offer excellent speed of use. As well as the M xDrive mode and the Drivelogic shift program, the engine and damper mapping, Servotronic steering characteristics and readouts in the Head-Up Display can also be memorised. The desired settings can be stored via the iDrive menu. An icon in the instrument cluster indicates to the driver when a stored M1/M2 set-up is activated.

A short press of the DSC button in the centre console activates M Dynamic Mode (MDM) and a long press engages DSC off mode. When DSC off mode is activated, the M xDrive settings menu appears in the Control Display at the same time. Plus, it is now possible to select 4WD, 4WD Sport or 2WD mode using either the iDrive Controller or the touchscreen function. An increase in boost pressure as well as targeted modifications to the engine management raise the car’s performance vs. the production model by 29 kW/40 hp to 441 kW/600 hp. Meanwhile a look ahead to future developments is provided by eye-catching concept cars that reflect the essence of the brand's pure DNA. The public response to both is reflected in the result of this year's readers' vote organised by the magazine "Auto Bild Sportscars". In two rating categories, readers voted BMW Group models "2015 Sports Car of the Year": the "Serial Production Coupés" class was won by new BMW M4 GTS, while in the "Concept Cars" category, the BMW 3.0 CSL Homage was able to attract the majority of votes.

BMW M4 GTS continues its winning streak.
By winning the "Serial Production Coupés" category, the BMW M4 GTS has built on the success of the BMW M4 Coupé and the BMW 435i Coupé, which were voted Sports Car of the Year in 2014 and 2013 respectively. The victory of the BMW 3.0 CSL Homage was a premiere: it attracted the most votes in the "Concept Cars" category which was offered for the first time - and it won by a very clear margin. This concept study was presented at this year's Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este as the BMW design team's tribute to the legendary BMW 3.0 CSL - the timeless, classic BMW coupé icon of the 1970s.

The BMW 3.0 CSL Homage translates the character of the original into the contemporary age, reinterpreting it in a new and exciting way. Cutting-edge materials were used to build this concept car, including carbon fibre (CFRP). The high-tech material is used extensively in the BMW 3.0 CSL Homage, moving the philosophy of lightweight construction forward to the current state of the art. As in the 1970s original, the lines of the BMW 3.0 CSL Homage express pure dynamic performance: striking air deflectors, powerful wheel arches and a prominent roof and rear spoiler frame an elongated body. The front air deflector serves to ventilate the engine compartment while the wings above the rear wheels ensure optimum air flow around the vehicle. The "Auto Bild Sports Cars of the Year" readers' vote was held this year for the 14th time. The title "Sports Car of the Year" is among the most important awards for sports-style vehicles in the automobile sector in Germany, and it is highly coveted among all vehicle manufacturers. There were 142 models to choose from for the readers' vote in 2015. Drawn from test and road reports of the last 12 months, the vehicles were classified in 18 categories – eight for serial production vehicles, eight for tuning vehicles and one category each for small-series vehicles and concept cars respectively. The BMW M5 is driven by a 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and peak output of 412 kW/560 hp. In combination with the seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission, the Active M Differential at the rear axle and model-specific suspension technology precisely tuned to the performance curve with racing know-how, this high-revving power unit guarantees outstanding dynamic driving performance. For a further boost in performance, the Competition Package now comes as an optional extra with features that tap into a new dimension of dynamics in trademark BMW M style.

The Competition Package was specifically devised to boost the handling properties of the BMW M5. With the Competition Package, the output of the high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology is raised by 11 kW to 423 kW/575 hp. In addition, the newly developed M carbon ceramic brakes have been available as an option since March 2013.

A particularly striking innovation in the appearance of the BMW M5 is the M “kidney grille”, which now features the model designation and whose slats cite the double-spoke design of the M light alloys. In addition to standard xenon headlights, there is now the option of Adaptive LED Headlights which emit a particularly bright white light generated by a pair of LED units situated horizontally in the middle of each light ring. A standard feature on the BMW M5 are the new-design tail lights with strikingly thin LED light strips that generate a high contrast and add to the unmistakable night-time look.

The hallmark M feeling is also conveyed by the M leather steering wheel, whose new design likewise takes visual cues from the double-spoke wheels. The interior of the sedan has also gained an increase in volume of the storage compartment under the armrest in the centre console area. The Control Display of the standard-fitted iDrive operating system now features chrome trim on the sides. For the first time, an optional Touch Controller is available with a touch-sensitive surface allowing, for example, characters to be entered when programming a destination for the navigation system.

As of July, BMW Individual will be offering a range of new exterior colours for the BMW M5 (Pure Metal Silver, Pyrite Brown metallic, Frozen Blue metallic and further BMW Individual matt paintwork finishes), as well as exclusive leather shades (Cashmere Beige and Nutmeg). With the BMW Individual paintwork Pure Metal Silver, for example, the body takes on a deep, brilliant lustre. This unique metallic gleam is down to the combination of a special-effect pigment with a water-based paint system. The addition of ultra-thin aluminium flakes guarantees a uniform and gleaming surface. Depending on the angle of view, these flakes create a light-dark contrast and accentuate the surfaces of the body. This paintwork showcases the model’s lines and contours to even better effect and adds striking touches to the vehicle’s design.

The further extended range of features from BMW ConnectedDrive also ensures that the new BMW M5 is in pole position in its sector when it comes to intelligent connectivity. Innovative driver assistance systems and mobility services optimise safety and comfort while driving as well as the use of infotainment programmes. The new Driving Assistant system combines Lane Departure Warning with Collision Warning including braking function. Its camera, mounted in the windscreen area, registers vehicles and pedestrians and gives the driver visual and acoustic warning signals if a potential collision is detected. In critical situations, moderate hazard braking is actuated. The glare-free High Beam Assistant is now also optionally available for the BMW M5, while the Lane Change Warning system can now be used from a speed of 20 km/h (12.4 mph).

The new Online Entertainment option, meanwhile, makes for a particularly varied audio programme. It allows online access to a music database containing around 12 million tracks. In conjunction with the Navigation System Professional and the ConnectedDrive Services option, additional features are available, among them Concierge Services, Remote Services and Real Time Traffic Information.

And now the Forza Motorsport 4 racing simulation game for the Xbox 360 console provides the perfect outlet for this excitement. Ahead of the car’s official road launch, ambitious gamers can now thread the high-performance sedan around the world’s most spectacular race circuits on their TV or computer screens. The Limited Collector’s Edition of the latest version of Forza Motorsport sees the new BMW M5 not only taking on the role of “hero car” but also featuring as the game’s cover star. On the same day as the game is released (14 October 2011), registration will open for the BMW M5 Forza Cup. The competition to set the fastest virtual laps in the new M5 will build to a climax in the finale at the BMW Welt. A few weeks after the car’s world premiere at the Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) – but ahead of its market launch in December 2011 – the Forza Motorsport community will have the chance to rack up the first virtual laps with the new BMW M5. The latest version of the globally popular racing game uses high-resolution HD graphics and state-of-the-art simulation technology to deliver an exceptionally realistic driving experience. Gamers can piece together their preferred race scenario from around 500 different cars and more than 100 circuits. The highlight is the new BMW M5, which will sample its first taste of virtual race action in Forza Motorsport 4. Gamers will compete to set the quickest times on circuits such as the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife track, where BMW M GmbH engineers have been fine-tuning the actual car over recent weeks and months. Forza Motorsport 4 offers a range of difficulty levels and driving aids, allowing both rookies and experienced gamers to experience the thrills and excitement of the game – and the new BMW M5 – straight off the start line.

For the first time, gamers will have the choice of using the controller or the innovative new Kinect control system for the Xbox 360 to pilot the car. Added to which, the game also features a garage mode, in which the selected car can be explored and configured.  Munich. After being on sale on the global automotive market for five successful years, the BMW M5 has ended its production lifespan with a new record high. The BMW M GmbH produced a total of 20,548 of the charismatic high-performance sports car featuring a V 10-cylinder power unit. The BMW M5 Saloon is accountable for 19,523 of these, with the BMW M5 Touring, which was first launched in 2007, contributing a further 1025 units towards the overall result. This means that even the production figures of the predecessor model, which was manufactured for a period of six years, have been surpassed. The BMW M GmbH sees this record result as a further chapter in the success story of a remarkable automobile, which reaches back as far as the year 1984. 26 years ago we saw the launch of the first BMW M5 – this also marking the birth of the high-performance saloon segment. 

Drive and suspension technology inspired by motor sports combined with the spaciousness and travelling comfort of a midrange saloon car: When the first BMW M5 was launched, this concept brought about an entirely new vehicle category. With M-specific aesthetics and thanks to uncompromising premium quality, the new model was at the same time the first high-performance sports car designed for use in everyday traffic conditions. With the fifth generation of the BMW M5, this combination achieved a level of fascination it had never reached before. A V10 high-revving 373 kW/507 bhp engine, sequential M transmission Drivelogic with seven gears and Launch Control for maximum acceleration from a standstill, variable, engine speed-dependent M differential lock as well as model-specific suspension technology, including Electronic Damper Control (EDC) and a compound brake unit, guarantee the BMW M5’s outstanding performance characteristics. As an all-round athlete, dominating both the highly dynamic sprint and longer distances, the latest generation, too, is capturing a unique position within the competitive environment. In 2007, the saloon, which was also dubbed by the media as a “businessman’s express”, was joined by the BMW M5 Touring. The USA also proved to be the most crucial sales market for the fifth generation of the BMW M Saloon. 8,800 vehicles were sold in the United States. Ahead of the German market (1,647 units), Great Britain and Ireland developed the greatest demand on the European continent with 1,776 vehicles sold. Japan (1,357 units) takes fourth place among the most significant markets for the BMW M5 Saloon, followed by Italy (512). The BMW M5 Touring enjoyed the greatest popularity in Germany (302 units), Great Britain and Ireland (208) and in Italy (184).

A distinctive feature of both models is the 5-litre, ten-cylinder engine with a high-revving concept. The power unit, which was conceived using comprehensive expertise derived from motor sports, develops maximum output at an engine speed of 7,750 rpm, disclosing its unique character in particular through enormous pulling power that remains available across a remarkably broad speed range. Its exceptional position has been underlined by numerous awards. For example, in the years 2005 and 2006, the V10 engine seized overall victory twice in succession at the “Engine of the Year Awards” as well as first place during each of the two following years in the engine category exceeding a cubic capacity of 4 litres. Even after completion of the BMW M5’s production lifespan, the 10-cylinder engine continues to fascinate in a very special way. The exceptional power unit with identical power output and performance characteristics is currently featured in both the BMW M6 Coupe and the BMW M6 Convertible. The limited BMW M6 Competition Edition offers a particularly elegant way of expressing the high-performance coupe’s superior dynamics. A unique BMW Individual Frozen Grey paint finish and an individual interior design provide the coupe with an exclusive high-quality ambience. The BMW Individual full Merino leather trim is available either in black with light grey contrast seams or in the bi-colour version Silverstone/Black with light grey and black contrast seams. Revised tuning of springs, dampers and stabilisers, lowering of the suspension by 12 mm at the front and 10 mm at the rear in conjunction with M forged alloy wheels featuring a double spoke design and a special combination of tyres, result in noticeably optimised lateral and longitudinal dynamics. Management of the suspension systems, the EDC Electronic Damper Control, the track and camber values as well as the characteristic map of the variable M differential lock have been perfectly adapted to match the suspension modifications.

dynamic BMW M5 Sports Saloon. And in a direct comparison on the race
track the Touring also remains very close to its Saloon counterpart,
thus offering all the agility and dynamism of a particularly powerful
sports car in every respect. Considering its performance, the BMW M5 is
also a most economical car: Average fuel consumption in the EU test
cycle is 15.0 litres/100 km, equal to 18.8 mpg Imp. And in extra-urban
traffic, the driver is able to enjoy this high-performance five-door on
just 10.6 litres/100 km, equal to 26.6 mpg Imp. The ideal combination:
high performance and supreme function. In everyday motoring the BMW M5
Touring offers the driver a new dimension of mobility combining supreme
sports car performance with all the benefits of BMW's Touring concept.
This is clearly borne out by the five full-size seats, flexible loading
space from 500-1,650 litres (17.5-57.8 cubic feet), as well as
excellent driving comfort and the proven function of the BMW 5 Series
Touring uniquely successful the world over. The two outer seats in
the spacious rear passenger area may be further upgraded by seat
heating and come as standard with ISOFIX child seat fastening. As long
as the centre seat remains free, the fold¬ing centre armrest offers
the additional benefits of a storage box and two cupholders. The
rear-seat backrest split in a 60 : 40 ratio folds down either completely
or individually on either side. As an option the luggage compartment
may be upgraded by a ski-bag and a special Storage Package complete
with individual subdivision of the floor in the luggage compartment,
folding partition panels, lashing belts in the side panels, and
multi-function supports. The semi-automatic roll-up cover, in turn,
keeps your luggage safely away from prying eyes, and the rear window
opens separately as a standard feature, with an automatic tailgate
opening/closing function coming as an optional extra. Discreet
design, perfect understatement. Distinguishing this new model from the
"regular" BMW 5 Series Touring, the exterior design boasts
discreet modifications clearly proving the exceptional potential of the
BMW M5 Touring at first sight: The front air dam, side-sills, air
intakes in the side panels, the rear air dam as well as four round
tailpipes leading out of the exhaust are clear signs of distinction
characterising the world's most dynamic production estate. Indeed, it is
fair to say that no other car from BMW M GmbH offers such a perfect
rendition of understatement in its looks and appearance. Beneath the
sheet metal, on the other hand, numerous details and improvements adapt
the "basic" model to the far higher standard of power and
performance offered by the M5 Touring. Particularly the suspension,
steering and DSC Dynamic Stability Control have been perfectly
optimised to match the power of the engine and the modified centre of
gravity. And to further enhance the torsional stiffness of the Touring
body, the reinforcements between the side-sills and the floor in the
luggage compartment have been specially modified in accordance with the
requirements of BMW M. Seven-speed SMG for a particularly precise
gearshift. The Sequential M Gearbox (SMG) with Drivelogic ensures
perfect transmission of engine power via the drivetrain to the rear
wheels in every situation: Seven-speed SMG enables the driver to shift
gears manually, as an option with extremely short gearshift times. In
addition, the automatic Drive function turns even fast cruising into a
truly blissful experience. SMG is operated either via the selector
lever or through toggles on the steering wheel. SMG Drivelogic, in
turn, offers the driver a choice of no less than 11 driving programs
enabling him to individually ad¬just the gearshift characteristics
of SMG to his personal style of motoring. Using the manual gearshift
function (S-mode), the driver is able to pre-select no less than six of
these eleven programs, shifting gears by hand in his own personal
style. The only exception is Launch Control for optimum acceleration
from a standstill. The gearshift function required for this purpose is
provided by the transmission independently at the ideal gearshift point
and with optimum slip control, and the six gears are supplemented by
five automatic driving programs in the D-mode. DSC Dynamic Stability
Control complete with the M Dynamic Mode. Rear-wheel drive and almost
perfect weight distribution from front to rear ensure optimum
conditions for particularly dynamic driving characteristics further
enhanced by the all-aluminium chassis and suspension of the BMW 5
Series Touring. To match the particularly outstanding performance of the
BMW M5 Touring, both the two-joint spring strut front axle and the
integral arm have been modified in a number of details, an aluminium
thrust panel on the front axle subframe, for example, ensuring
additional lateral stiffness. A further improvement is the modified
front axle kinematics reflecting the change in weight distribution and
the car's centre of gravity. And on the rear axle the air suspension
has been carefully geared to the new BMW 5 Series Touring to maintain
the car's sporting and dy¬namic performance also when carrying a
heavy load. The various functions and features of DSC Dynamic
Stability Control specially enhanced for BMW M Cars may also be
controlled by the driver in the BMW M5 Touring. Pressing the MDrive
button on the multifunction steering wheel, for example, the driver is
able to activate the M Dynamic Mode, with the DSC response thresholds
cutting in at the level specified in advance. This, in turn, enables
the driver to enjoy a controlled power slide in bends, gently
counter-steering in particularly dynamic driving manoeuvres, with DSC
cutting in only when the car reaches the limits to driving physics.
And as a further feature Dynamic Stability Control may be fully
deactivated on the BMW M5 Touring. Programmable EDC and Variable M
Differential Lock. EDC Electronic Damper Control offers the driver
superior freedom of choice, allowing him to adjust the particular
characteristics of the chassis and suspension to current driving
conditions in the BMW M5 Touring: Pressing the MDrive button on the
steering wheel or the button next to the SMG selector lever, the driver
is able to call up no less than three different suspension settings
ranging from comfortable through dynamic all the way to sporting and
firm. The Variable M Differential Lock allows optimum traction on all
kinds of surfaces, building up 100 per cent locking action when
required. This enables the BMW M5 Touring to accelerate even faster out
of bends and drive smoothly without problems on snow, gravel, and ice.
And whenever the driver prefers a sporting style of motoring, as well
as on roads with a higher frictional coefficient, the M Differential
Lock will enhance the positive characteristics of rear-wheel drive.
Since the driver does not always need the power and performance of the
V10 power unit in everyday traffic, the new BMW M5 Touring offers the
comfort-oriented P400 Performance Program, for example in city traffic.
This program is automatically activated every time the driver starts the
engine, providing maximum output of 400 hp. Then, pressing the Power
Button, the driver is able to activate full engine output of 507 hp
provided by either a sporting or race-like Dynamic Driving Program.
Interior: superior function in sporting style. Superior function and
the comfortable character of the BMW 5 Series Touring are also to be
admired and enjoyed within the world's most dynamic production estate.
But at the same time the BMW M5 Touring naturally boasts particularly
sophisticated features and amenities oriented even more than usual
towards the sporting driver. Enhanced leather upholstery featured as
standard, for example, conveys a superior touch of sporting class and
elegance right from the start. Full leather upholstery available as an
option, in turn, guarantees even more exclusive style. And at the same
time the wide range of options available from BMW Individual gives the
customer almost unlimited choice of exclusive upholstery and interior
colours, as well as exterior paintwork. Within the cockpit the
controls for all functions essential in modern motoring are grouped in
ergonomically perfect arrangement on or around the steering wheel. The
optional Head-Up Display enhances driver orientation, presenting
essential information directly in the driver's line of vision and thus
enabling the driver to take up this information without turning his
eyes away from the road. This information is supplemented by specific
M data such as the variable pre-warning field in the rev counter
complete with integrated Shift Lights. BMW iDrive control concept with
eight favourite buttons. The function buttons and controls grouped
together in the centre console are also within easy access from the
front passenger's seat. The BMW M5 Touring comes as standard with the
BMW iDrive control concept ensuring simple and ergonomically optimised
activation and management of numerous functions via the controller and
the central Control Display. Menu guidance has been enhanced in the
meantime by the addition of MDrive Management, and to further simplify
the process of controlling the system the driver and passengers have
the choice of eight freely available favourite buttons. So just
pressing one of those buttons, the user is able to conveniently
retrieve, say, a telephone number dialled particularly often, a regular
destination, or his favourite radio station. The M steering wheel is
the perfect interface between this high-performance Touring and its
driver, enabling him to operate important functions on the vehicle and
in motoring comfort without even taking his hands off the steering
wheel. Simply pressing the paddles on the steering wheel, for example,
the driver is able to shift gears in the SMG mode. Pressing the MDrive
button, on the other hand, the driver is able to retrieve specific
dynamic driving set-ups configured in advance. So simply by pressing a
button he is able to modify the characteristics of the engine, the SMG
gearshift, the DSC setting, the functions of EDC Electronic Damper
Control, and the data presented by the Head-Up Display. The controls
and switches finished in Pearl Gloss Chrome add a particularly
appealing visual touch. This high-class and highly attractive material
is featured on the paddles, the SMG trim, the door openers, the climate
control units, rotary knobs and slides for the air vents, as well as on
the Start/Stop button. The special iDrive Controller exclusive to BMW
M is made of solid aluminium tailored in its colour to the Pearl Gloss
Chrome design. The speedometer and rev counter, in turn, come in
ring-shaped surrounds also finished in Pearl Gloss Chrome for an
attractive look. The white numbers on black instrument dials, the
instrument needles in brilliant BMW M Red, and the permanent white
illumination all provide a purist and sophisticated touch. A special
feature is the variable pre-warning field on the rev counter: The
engine speed range available to the driver increases as a function of
the increase in engine oil temperature, while the yellow-marked
pre-warning and red warning areas become smaller. Supreme seating
comfort on five seats. Within the new BMW M5 Touring, body-hugging M
seats offer the driver and front passenger supreme side support under
all conditions. The seats are flexibly adjustable to numerous settings,
providing an ideal seating position in all cases and for all occupants.
Optionally available active adjustment of backrest width automatically
gears side support to the respective driving conditions and
requirements. The passengers sitting at the back of BMW's new
five-seater also enjoy highly comfortable seating conditions, the
two-piece Pano¬rama Roof made of sundim glass providing a truly
heavenly view of the sky above. A further advantage is that both panels
in the glass roof may be tilted up in their vent position for optimum
ventilation, and the front panel may be opened completely. As an
option the BMW M5 Touring is available with a particularly sophisticated
and technically demanding range of audio, communication and navigation
systems. Especially the newly developed BMW Individual High End Audio
System offers truly exceptional musical entertainment. The heart of
this unique system is the trendsetting DIRAC Dual Input Room Acoustics
Calculator, a digital nine-channel amplifier with DSP digital signal
processing offering maximum power of no less than 825 watts.
Supplemented by speed-related volume control and equalising, as well as
a total of 16 loudspeakers, the system sets new standards in sound
quality. Indeed, the brilliant reproduction of sound provided by this
trendsetting audio system guarantees supreme music pleasure on all
seats in the new BMW M5 Touring.

Munich. Riders with the fastest time on the racing circuit will be
rewarded with a fast car to take home with them. This year, BMW is
donating two awesome new M automobiles, the BMW M Award, as prizes for
the best MotoGP riders participating in the Motorcycle Road Racing
World Championship. The rider achieving fastest time in the MotoGP
tests being held in Barcelona/Spain on 5 March 2006 will win a BMW Z4 M
Roadster. A BMW Z4 M Coupe will go to the MotoGP rider with the fastest
overall time from all qualifying rounds at the last world championship
leg in Valencia/Spain on October 29. Moreover, BMW will again be
supplying the Safety Cars for the Motorcycle Road Racing World
Championship for the next four years, thereby continuing its commitment
which began in 1999. In addition to four further BMW automobiles, a BMW
M5 and an M6, both delivering 507 bhp and driven by professionals, will
constitute a fast-moving and eye-catching escort to the MotoGP, an event
comprising17 races seen by an average of more than 300 million

1.World premiere of the new BMW M5. (Short story) The ultimate in
sports saloon motoring has got a name: M5. This finest 5 Series vehicle
is the most powerful of all time: five litres of cubic capacity, ten
cylinders, a maximum output of 507 bhp (373 kW), a peak torque of 520
Newton metres and engine speeds redlining at 8,000 rpm, these are
figures that speak for themselves. In an unprecedented way, these
figures blur the lines between a car for everyday use and a vehicle for
ambitious motor sport racing. A successful recipe for two decades:
power without overstatement. With its performance figures, the
fourth-generation M5 once again sets the benchmark in the segment of
powerful sports saloons, a niche which the first M5 carved for itself
back in 1984. During the last 20 years, this first M5 and all its
successors have made their mark, always setting the standard as a
perfect symbiosis of a comfortable, elegant saloon for everyday use,
abundant output delivered by a powerful engine and ultimate sportiness.
With sales figures exceeding 20,000, the M5 has proved to be an
economically successful concept which combines prodigious performance
with understatement, a basic feature of all M automobiles. This
principle reaches its culmination in the new M5: this "extreme
athlete" with its subtle appearance and the seemingly endless
power of its ten-cylinder high-revving engine, which interacts
perfectly with the seven-speed SMG gearbox, introduces the driver to
completely new dimensions of effortlessness. To put it in a nutshell:
in its class, which it shares with top-class competitors, the M5 excels
due to the most innovative drive concept, the best power-to-weight
ratio, supreme handling and excellent everyday driving qualities. It is
a fully roadworthy saloon with the heart of an athlete, a sports car
which is perfectly suited for everyday motoring. The new M5 skilfully
combines these two virtues. First high-revving V10 engine to be
featured in a regular-production saloon. The V10 is the only
high-revving power unit to be featured in a series-production car.
Featured in the most powerful production car within the BMW model
family, this new engine once again sets the benchmark in its class.
There is, however, more to it than pure performance. What is important
for M automobiles is acceleration and driving dynamics, the latter
which is dependent on the actual forward thrust and the vehicle's
weight. The drive forces at the driven wheels are significantly
influenced by the engine torque and the total ratio. The high-revving
concept caters for an optimum transmission and rear-axle ratio, thus
guaranteeing an impressive forward thrust. The perfect choice:
high-revving concept. For the BMW M engineers the compact, high-revving
normally aspirated engine was the ideal choice. With a red line of
8,250 rpm, the ten-cylinder engine has ventured into terrain which has
so far been reserved for red-blooded racing cars. Compared to the
previous M5 eight-cylinder engine, performance has increased by more
than 25 percent. The M5 has also surpassed the magical 100 bhp per
litre limit, its specific output being on par with that of racing cars.
A masterpiece in engine construction. The two five-cylinder banks of the
V10 are arranged at an angle of 90° to achieve a mass balance of
the crankshaft drive, which is optimised for low vibration and
increased comfort. For reasons of stiffness and due to the high loads
resulting from combustion pressure, engine speed and vibrations, a
bedplate design has been chosen for the crankcase, the first-ever
application in a production V engine by BMW. For an optimum alignment of
the crankshaft, grey-cast iron inserts have been integrated into the
aluminium bedplate, which also serve to enhance acoustics, increase
vibrational comfort and ensure a high oil supply rate. The extremely
stiff crankshaft is supported by six bearings. High-pressure bi-VANOS
and individual throttle butterflies. The bi-VANOS variable valve timing
featured in the new M5 engine ensures an optimum charge cycle, thus
helping to achieve extremely short adjustment times. This means in
practice: increased performance, an improved torque curve, optimum
responsiveness, lower consumption and fewer emissions. Each cylinder
has its own throttle, a feature typical of racing cars. Throttle control
is fully electronic and cylinder bank specific. Dual exhaust system
made of stainless steel. The exhaust system is made of seamless
stainless steel and has a dual-flow design all the way to the
silencers. The exhaust gases finally leave the system through four
tailpipes which are what make the rear end of the M vehicles so
unmistakable. The exhaust system complies with the European EU4 and the
US LEV2 emission standards. The engine control module: the first of
its kind in the world. The MS S65 engine management system is the
central factor behind the V10's outstanding performance and emission
data. This engine management system is unparalleled in its package
density. Its processors are the most powerful ones which are currently
approved for use in automobiles, as high engine speeds and
comprehensive management and control tasks demand the utmost from this
system. Highlight in engine management: ionic current technology. The
ionic current technology featured by the engine management unit is a
technological highlight which serves to detect engine knock, misfiring
and combustion misses. Utilising the spark plug in each cylinder, this
system helps to pinpoint engine knock, to check for correct ignition
and to detect any ignition misses. Thus, the spark plug has a dual
function - as an actuator for the ignition and as a sensor for
monitoring the combustion process. Seven-speed SMG gearbox conveys M
power to the tarmac. The high-revving concept only succeeds in
combination with a gearbox which translates the torque available to the
engine, by means of a short overall transmission ratio, into optimised
forward thrust. The seven-speed SMG gearbox is precisely the right
transmission to ideally convey the V10 engine's power via the drive
train to the wheels. BMW M is the first manufacturer worldwide to offer
a seven-speed sequential gearbox with drivelogic function. Even more
highly perfected than the previous six-speed transmission, the
seven-speed SMG gearbox enables manual gear selection with ultra-short
shifting times as well as comfortable cruising thanks to automated gear
selection. The purpose of the additional seventh gear is to reduce
engine speed and torque gaps . New SMG gearbox's speed up by 20
percent. With the seven-speed SMG gearbox, gears can be changed using
the gearshift lever on the centre console or the paddles on the
steering wheel. Compared to the previous SMG transmission, changing
gears is 20 percent faster with the new SMG generation. Never before
has it been quicker to change gears with a transmission of this kind.
The advantage for the M5 driver: Gear change is smooth and accomplished
at a speed impossible to reach even by the most proficient driver, thus
making the inevitable power flow interruptions when changing gears
hardly noticeable. The M5 delivers an almost jerk-free performance when
accelerating from a standstill to its top speed. Drivelogic: the driver
determines the SMG's characteristics for changing gears. Thanks to the
SMG's drivelogic function, the driver can choose from eleven gear
change options, which enable him to adapt the SMG's characteristics to
his very own style of motoring. Six of these programs can be
pre-selected in the sequential manual gearbox mode (S mode), the
spectrum ranging from balanced dynamic to very sporty. With the gearbox
in the S mode, the driver always shifts gears manually. Whenever the
driver activates the Launch Control function, the SMG Drivelogic shifts
gears shortly before the maximum engine speed is reached at precisely
the right moment and with optimum slip until the M5 reaches its top
speed. In the Drive (D mode) automatic gearshift mode, the transmission
shifts the seven gears automatically, depending on the program
selected, the driving situation, the road speed and the position of the
accelerator pedal. SMG for increased safety and comfort. The
seven-speed SMG gearbox not only supports the driver in achieving motor
sports performance, but also offers scores of safety features. In
critical situations, when the driver shifts down on a slippery surface,
for example, the gearbox opens the clutch in the fraction of a second
in order to prevent the M5 from swerving out of control in the event of
excessive drag torque at the driven wheels. Further functions are the
climbing, which prevents the car from rolling backwards during hill
starts as well as the hill detection, which adjusts the shift points on
gradients and descents. This prevents gear hunting when going uphill.
When driving downhill, the hill detection holds the lower gears for
longer in order to make effective use of the engine's braking power.
Maximum driving pleasure. The interaction of the V10 engine and the
seven-speed SMG gearbox results in a level of performance, which has so
far been inconceivable for series-production saloons. Above all, there
is one thing the M5 gives to its driver: driving pleasure at its best.
Compared to the previous M5, the current model comes up trumps in all
performance and fun disciplines: it accomplishes the 0 to 62 mph sprint
in 4,7 seconds and reaches the 200 km/h (124 mph) mark after a mere 15
seconds to go on to the electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h
(155 mph). A glance at the speedometer reveals where this power package
would head for if maximum speed was not electronically limited: an
awe-inspiring 330 km/h (205 mph). The Nürburgring serves as a
test track. Compared to all direct competitors, the interaction of
actual forward thrust and a low vehicle weight is a strong argument in
favour of the new M5. Also in this respect, the M5 sets the benchmark
and leaves its competitors far behind. An undisputed gauge of driving
dynamics is the northern loop of the legendary Nürburgring race
track. For decades, the world's most demanding race track has been the
perfect place of separating the wheat from the chaff. There is no other
place where the interaction of vehicle components when taken to the
limits can be observed as well as on the Nürburgring's northern
loop. With lap times of approximately eight minutes, the M5 can hold
its own and is a worthy competitor of thoroughbred sports cars, leaving
its competitors far behind. By the way: traditionally, all M vehicles
are tested there. M suspension based on the 5 Series: the icing on the
cake. The aforementioned lap time demonstrates that the M5 can be
extremely sporty. Although the suspension of the basic 5 Series model
is undoubtedly very good, such a record performance with respect to
dynamics would not be possible. This is why the M5 is also totally
unique with regard to its suspension. Many detail solutions and changes
turn the 5 Series into an M5. Consequently, the suspension and its
electronic assistants have been either exclusively developed for the
new M5, undergone extensive modifications or adapted to the special M
performance. For example, the M5's running gear is by no means a
lowered 5 Series suspension. Instead, it is an optimised design created
from scratch. The suspension assisting systems, some of which have the
same name as those of the 5 Series, have been optimised for this
vehicle. On the one hand, this suspension contributes greatly to the M5
being the technological culmination of the successful BMW 5 Series. On
the other hand, it clearly demonstrates that the M5 is a unique model
with a distinctive appearance. Variable M differential lock. The M5
has a variable, torque-sensing differential lock bestowing the vehicle
with a high level of driving stability and optimum traction, above all
when accelerating out of bends. Even in extremely demanding driving
situations, i.e. when there are major differences in the coefficients
of friction at the driven wheels, it offers a decisive advantage in
terms of traction. A further advantage is that it instantly builds up
an increasing locking power if the speed difference between the driven
wheels rises, thus guaranteeing optimum forward progress at all times.
Only featured in the M5: DSC with two selectable driving dynamics
programs. A new generation of the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) has
been especially developed for the M5. The DSC system can be deactivated
by pressing a button on the selector lever cover. The driving dynamics
programs are pre-selected in the so-called MDrive and can be called up
using the MDrive button on the steering wheel. Whilst the first DSC
mode by and large corresponds to that of the 5 Series, the second mode
- the M Dynamic Mode - is highly appreciated by sports-minded drivers.
EDC: the spectrum ranges from sportingly firm to comfortable. The M5's
Electronic Damper Control (EDC) enables the driver to choose from three
programs (comfort, normal and sport), thereby adjusting the suspension
characteristics accordingly. The driver can operate the EDC function via
the MDrive button on the steering wheel or the push button next to the
SMG selector lever. Power button activates engine characteristics
"on demand". The driver often does not need the M5's full
performance and maximum agility, for example in city traffic. This is
why the markedly comfortable P400 performance program with an engine
output of 400 bhp is automatically activated whenever the engine is
started. At the push of a button (the so-called Power button on the
selector lever cover), the ten-cylinder powerplant's full power is at
the driver's disposal. The accelerator pedal kinematics adopt
spontaneous characteristics, giving free rein, in the P500 program, to
the sporty driver and eliciting, in the P500 sport program,
uncompromising racing pleasure. High-performance brakes derived from
motor sport. To complement its immense power output, the M5 is equipped
with a generously sized high-performance braking system with
perforated, weight-optimised compound brake discs. The aluminium
twin-piston sliding callipers (analogous to the BMW 7 Series), which
have been optimised for minimum weight and maximum stiffness, help the
M5 to achieve stopping distances similar to those of red-blooded sports
cars: deceleration from 62 mph to 0 is accomplished in under 36 metres,
the braking distance from 124 mph to a standstill is less than 140
metres. The high-performance business express. A wolf in sheep's
clothing - this description would fit if the basic 5 Series, and
particularly the new M5, looked "tame" when viewed from
outside. In fact, the 5 Series already looks sporty, elegant and
athletic. It is no coincidence that this 5 Series represents BMW's
dynamic business class. The M5 is set apart from the basic model by a
host of striking and hidden details, which further add to its powerful,
sporty and dynamic looks. An athlete in business attire would be an apt
description of the new M5. Exterior with understatement. The
differences in design versus the basic 5 Series are discreet but
consistent, giving the M5 a surprisingly high level of uniqueness in
terms of looks, without questioning the common genes with the BMW model
series. The modified front and rear aprons are instant eye catchers.
Another difference is the modified side sills and the somewhat more
prominent wheel arches. Traditionally, the M differs from the
"normal" BMW in its exclusive exterior mirror design, the
four tailpipes, which have also become an unmistakable feature of all M
vehicles, and the exclusive wheel design. For the first time, the M5
sports very attractive gills which are incorporated into the front side
panel. An even sportier interior. The M5 comes with a leather interior
in three different colours, which makes it look even more sophisticated
than the lavishly equipped basic model or - for an extra price - with a
full leather interior, which looks absolutely stunning. Further
important differences versus the 5 Series are the instrument cluster,
the optional M-specific head-up display, the steering wheel with MDrive

Whenever BMW M GmbH presents a new M automobile, the focus of attention
is traditionally on the power unit beneath the bonnet. This is
particularly the case with the new M5: across the world, its V10 engine
is considered to be one of the most fascinating drive concepts featured
in a production car. This technological masterpiece does not only sport
the same number of cylinders as its Formula 1 BMW WilliamsF1 racing
counterpart, but also shares its high-revving concept. As is the case
with all high-performance normally aspirated engines made by BMW M,
this power unit generates enormous pulling force over the entire speed
range. First high-revving V10 engine to be featured in a
regular-production saloon. The V10 is the only high-revving power unit
to be featured in a series-production car. The M5's engine has ten
cylinders, a cubic capacity of 5 litres and produces a maximum output
of 507 bhp and a maximum torque of 520 Newton metres, making the M5 the
most powerful final production model in the BMW line-up. The segment of
powerful sports saloons was introduced 20 years ago with the
presentation of the first M5 and this new engine once again sets the
benchmark in this particular segment. There is, however, more to it than
pure performance. What is important for M automobiles is acceleration
and driving dynamics, the latter which is dependent on the actual
forward thrust and the vehicle's weight. The drive forces at the driven
wheels are significantly influenced by the engine torque and the
transmission ratio. The high-revving concept caters for an optimum
transmission ratio, thus guaranteeing an impressive forward thrust.
The perfect choice: high-revving concept. For the BMW M engineers the
compact, high-revving normally aspirated engine was the ideal choice.
With a red line of 8,250 rpm, the ten-cylinder engine has ventured into
terrain which has so far been reserved for red-blooded racing cars.
Compared to the previous M5 eight-cylinder engine, performance has
increased by more than 25 per cent. The M5 has also surpassed the
magical 100 bhp per litre limit, its specific output being on par with
that of racing cars. A masterpiece in engine construction. BMW, one of
the leaders in engine construction, has made a name for itself
primarily as a manufacturer of inline engines. The two five-cylinder
banks of the V10 are arranged at an angle of 90¡ã to
achieve a mass balance of the crankshaft drive, which is optimized for
low vibration and increased comfort. For reasons of stiffness, that is
due to the high loads resulting from combustion pressure, engine speed
and vibrations, a bedplate design has been chosen for the crankcase.
For an optimum alignment of the crankshaft, grey-cast iron inserts have
been integrated into the aluminium bedplate, which also serve to
enhance acoustics, increase vibrational comfort and ensure a high oil
supply rate. The extremely stiff crankshaft is supported by six
bearings. In the new M5, it is the first time that BMW has used a
bedplate design for a production V engine. Every gram counts in
lightweight construction. The one-piece aluminium cylinder heads of the
V10 engine are arranged in banks. The V10 power unit features four
valves per cylinder, a layout which is typical of BMW engines. All
valve train components are of low mass. Thus, for example, the M
engines feature for the first time low-weight, flow-optimized 5 mm-shaft
valves, spherical valve tappets with hydraulic valve play compensation
and single valve springs. All this results in a considerable mass
reduction, which is a prerequisite for the realisation of the
high-revving concept. High-pressure bi-VANOS for an optimum charge
cycle. The bi-VANOS variable valve timing featured in the new M5 engine
ensures an optimum charge cycle, thus helping to achieve extremely
short adjustment times. This means in practice: increased performance,
an improved torque curve, optimum responsiveness, lower consumption and
fewer emissions. Thanks to the bi-VANOS technology, intake and outlet
valves are always opened and closed at precisely the right moment.
Individual throttle butterflies help the engine to breathe freely. The
naturally aspirated engine uses ten flow-optimized intake trumpets to
"breathe in" air from two intake plenums. Each cylinder has
its own throttle, a feature typical of racing cars. All throttles are
actuated simultaneously and are electronically controlled in order to
make the engine highly responsive in the lower speed range, as well as
to achieve an immediate response of the vehicle at the high end of the
performance spectrum. Dual exhaust system made of stainless steel. The
exhaust system of the new M5 engine is made of seamless stainless steel
and has a dual-flow design all the way to the silencers. The exhaust
gases finally leave the system through four tailpipes which are what
make the rear end of the M vehicles so unmistakable. The exhaust system
complies with the European EU4 and the US LEV2 emission standards. The
engine control module: the first of its kind in the world. The MS S65
engine management system is the central factor behind the V10's
outstanding performance and emission data. With more than 1,000
individual components, this engine management system is unparalleled in
its package density. Its processors are the most powerful ones which
are currently approved for use in automobiles, as high engine speeds
and comprehensive management and control tasks demand the utmost from
this system. Receiving more than 50 input signals, this system
calculates for each individual cylinder and for each individual cycle
the optimum ignition point, the ideal cylinder fill, the injection
quantity and the injection point. At the same time this system
calculates and makes the necessary adjustments for the optimum camshaft
angle and the optimum position of the ten individual throttles.
Highlight in engine management: ionic current technology. The ionic
current technology featured by the engine management unit is a
technological highlight which serves to detect engine knock, misfiring
and combustion misses. Utilizing the spark plug in each cylinder, this
system helps to pinpoint engine knock, to check for correct ignition
and to detect any ignition misses. Thus the spark plug has a dual
function - as an actuator for the ignition and as a sensor for
monitoring the combustion process. The ionic current measuring is done
directly during the combustion process. The so-called ionic current
satellite receives signals from the five spark plugs of each cylinder
bank. Dependent on the load, it amplifies these signals and transmits
them to the engine management system for analysis, which, for example,
perfectly adjusts the ignition point of each cylinder via knock control
to the combustion process. All this results in benefits for the driver
of the new M5 - lower fuel consumption, higher torque and enhanced
performance. Seven-speed SMG gearbox conveys M power to the tarmac. The
high-revving concept only succeeds in combination with a gearbox which
translates the torque available to the engine, by means of a short
overall transmission ratio, into optimized forward thrust. The
seven-speed SMG gearbox is precisely the right transmission to ideally
convey the V10 engine's power via the drive train to the wheels. BMW M
is the first manufacturer worldwide to offer a seven-speed sequential
gearbox with drivelogic function. Even more highly perfected than the
previous six-speed transmission, the seven-speed SMG gearbox enables
manual gear selection with ultra-short shifting times as well as
comfortable cruising thanks to automatic gear selection. The purpose of
the additional seventh gear is to reduce engine speed and torque gaps.
New SMG gearbox's speed up by 20 per cent. With the seven-speed SMG
gearbox, gears can be changed using the central gearshift lever or the
so-called paddles on the steering wheel. Compared to the previous SMG
transmission, changing gears is 20 per cent faster with the new SMG
generation. Never before has it been quicker to change gears with a
transmission of this kind. The advantage for the M5 driver: Gear change
is smooth and accomplished at a speed impossible to reach even by the
most proficient driver, thus making the inevitable power flow
interruptions when changing gears hardly noticeable. The M5 delivers an
almost jerk-free performance when accelerating from a standstill to its
top speed. Drivelogic: the driver determines the SMG's characteristics
for changing gears. Thanks to the SMG's drivelogic function, the driver
can choose from eleven gear change options, which enable him to adapt
the SMG's characteristics to his very own style of motoring. Six of
these programs can be preselected in the sequential manual gearbox mode
(S mode), the spectrum ranging from balanced dynamic to very sporty.
With the gearbox in the S mode, the driver always shifts gears
manually. Whenever the driver activates the Launch Control function,
the SMG Drivelogic shifts gears shortly before the maximum engine speed
is reached at precisely the right moment and with optimum slip until the
M5 reaches its top speed. In the D (Drive) automatic gearshift mode, the
transmission shifts the seven gears automatically, depending on the
program selected, the driving situation, the road speed and the
position of the accelerator pedal. SMG for increased safety and
comfort. The seven-speed SMG gearbox not only supports the driver in
achieving motor sports performance, but also offers scores of safety
features. In critical situations, when the driver shifts down on a
slippery surface, for example, the gearbox opens the clutch in the
fraction of a second in order to prevent the M5 from swerving out of
control in the event of excessive drag torque at the driven wheels.
Further functions are the climbing, which prevents the car from rolling
backwards during hill starts as well as the hill detection, which
adjusts the shift points on gradients and descents. This prevents gear
hunting when going uphill. When driving downhill, the hill detection
holds the lower gears for longer in order to make effective use of the
engine's braking power. Production of high-performance engines - engine
production at its best. The high-performance power unit featured in the
new BMW M5 reflects the engineering competence of the BMW engine
construction specialists. The most powerful production engine in the
company's history is manufactured along with other BMW special engines
on a highly flexible production line at the BMW plant in Munich. The
wide selection of products requires very agile processes and demandsthe
utmost flexibility, profound product knowledge and skilful craftsmanship
from the qualified staff. The most stringent quality standards are met
in the mechanical production and assembly of the high-revving
aggregate. As the materials and components of the high-revving engine
are exposed to heavy loads, extremely high demands are placed on
surface quality and production tolerances. Some parts and components
are processed at a precision of up to 1¨M1000 millimetres. The
coding of the core components enables the staff to keep track of each
individual component from goods receipt to processing and through to
installation. A storage medium is provided for each engine to ensure, by
data transfer to the assembly stations, that the right parts and tools
are used.
