Munich. The BMW Group is consistently driving its
electrification strategy forward and presents new plug-in hybrid
models for an especially popular and dynamically growing vehicle
category. In the new BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e,
the intelligently controlled interaction between a fuel combustion
engine and an electric motor as well as locally emissions-free travel
can be experienced in the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports
Activity Coupe (SAC) premium segment starting in 2020. A highly
efficient electric drive and a latest-generation lithium-ion battery
enable an electrically powered range of up to 57 kilometres* in the
two new plug-in hybrid models. With an average fuel consumption of 2.1
to 1.9 litres per 100 kilometres* and CO2 emissions between 48 and
43 grams per kilometre* for the BMW X1 xDrive25e and 2.1 to 1.9 litres
per 100 kilometres* and between 47 and 43 grams per kilometre* for the
BMW X2 xDrive25e, both models set a benchmark within their competitive
fields. Combined power consumption of the BMW X1 xDrive25e is 14.3 to
13.8 kWh per 100 kilometres*, the corresponding values of the
BMW X2 xDrive25e are 14.2 to 13.7 kWh per 100 kilometres*. The hybrid
specific all-wheel drive with its fast and precise distribution of
power between the front and rear wheels delivers a high level of
driving pleasure and thrilling agility.

The two plug-in models are an extension to the wide range of BMW
models in the premium compact segment of SAV and SAC vehicles. In
addition to numerous variants featuring extremely efficient petrol and
diesel engines, models with electrified drive will be on offer for the
first time. Thus, the portfolio will include in addition to economical
entry models with a 3-cylinder combustion engine also the new plug-in
hybrid models and the BMW X2 M35i (combined fuel consumption:
7.1 – 6.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 163 – 154 g/km*), the
extremely athletic top model with a maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp.
With the extension of its range in the premium compact segment the BMW
Group’s model offensive is gaining further momentum in the area of
plug-in hybrid models. The current selection comprises the
MINI Cooper SE Countryman (combined fuel consumption:
2.1 – 1.9 l/100 km; combined power consumption:
13.9 – 13.5 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 47 – 43 g/km*), the
BMW 225xe Active Tourer (combined fuel consumption: 1.9 l/100 km;
combined power consumption: 13.5 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions:
42 g/km*), BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series models and plug-in hybrid
luxury sedans of the BMW 7 Series. In future, four BMW X models with
plug-in hybrid drive will also be available. As a pioneer in electric
mobility BMW intends to have more than one million vehicles with
electrified drive on the road by the end of 2021. By 2021, 25 percent
of the vehicles sold by the BMW Group in Europe will feature an
electric drive. By 2025 this figure is scheduled to reach 33 percent
and 50 percent by 2030. The BMW Group plans to extend their portfolio
by additional 25 electrified vehicles by 2023.

The plug-in hybrid system of the new BMW X1 xDrive 25e and the new
BMW X2 xDrive25e consists of a 1.5 litre 3-cylinder petrol engine with
BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and an electric drive specially
developed for this model. It is taken from the eDrive technology
modular system of the BMW Group. The petrol engine mobilises a peak
output of 92 kW/125 hp and a maximum torque of 220 Newton metres. It
transfers its power to a 6-speed Steptronic transmission and drives
the front wheels. The electric motor generates an output of 70 kW/95
hp and delivers 165 Nm of torque to the rear wheels via a single-speed
transmission. This makes for a hybrid specific all-wheel drive, which
gives both models a unique level of agility in their competitive
fields delivering hallmark SAV and SAC driving pleasure. The highly
responsive power delivery of the electric motor, which delivers its
full torque spontaneously from standstill, enables the driver to react
extremely quickly to changing driving conditions. In addition, the
position of the electric motor above the rear axle contributes to the
harmoniously balanced axle load distribution of the new BMW X1
xDrive25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e. In conjunction with the
intelligently controlled interaction between the two power units, it
provides maximum driving stability, ride comfort and dynamic response.

Together the combustion engine and electric motor produce a system
output of 162 kW/220 hp. The maximum system torque of both drive units
is 385 Nm. The new BMW X1 xDrive25e accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in
6.9 seconds. The new BMW X2 xDrive25e does the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in
6.8 seconds. In addition, the electric boost provided by the drive
system ensures additional safety reserves and intense sporty flair
when overtaking on country roads, for example. The top speed of the
new BMW X1 xDrive25e is 193 km/h. Maximum speed of the new
BMW X2 xDrive25e is 195 km/h.

With the very latest high-voltage battery cell technology, the new
BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e possess generous
reserves of electrical energy enabling the driver to conduct the main
share of everyday travel locally emissions-free with the electric
motor alone. The latest-generation lithium-ion battery has a gross
energy content of 10 kWh. This allows for an electrically powered
range of between 54 and 57 kilometres* in the BMW X1 xDrive25e
(between 55 and 57 kilometres* in the new BMW X2 xDrive25e). The
high-voltage battery can be charged at conventional household sockets
using the standard-equipment charging cable. An empty battery can be
fully charged in around five hours in this way. It only takes 3.8
hours for the battery to reach 80 percent of its total capacity. Using
a BMW i Wallbox, the relevant charging operation from 0 to 100 percent
takes less than 3.2 hours. 80 percent of total capacity is already
reached after 2.4 hours. The charging socket is located under a
separate flap on the front left side wall of the car.

The driver can use the eDrive button on the centre console to
influence the drive system’s operating mode. In the AUTO eDRIVE
standard setting, the intelligent drive system ensures optimum
interaction between the two power units in all driving situations.
Navigation data is also used to manage the plug-in hybrid system to
increase both efficiency as well as driving pleasure. When navigation
guidance is activated, the anticipatory energy management can also
take into account the route profile for controlling the drive system.
The MAX eDrive mode can be activated for maximum use of the electric
drive. In this mode, the new BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new
BMW X2 xDrive25e reach a top speed of 135 km/h. In addition there is
also the SAVE BATTERY mode. It enables the driver to maintain the
charging state of the high-voltage battery while driving or to
increase it by means of recuperation. In this way battery capacity can
be saved for later use when driving in purely electric mode in the
city for example. The driving experience switch can be used
independent of the drive mode. In the new BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new
BMW X2 xDrive25e, the driver can use this to activate the COMFORT,
SPORT and ECO PRO modes in order to influence the drive and suspension
functions as well as to operate the electrically powered comfort systems.

Due to a long electric range and low CO2 emissions, the new
BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e (depending on equipment)
meet the criteria which have been stipulated for the classification as
an electric vehicle in Germany and the associated preferential
treatment in public road traffic. In addition, it also qualifies for
reduced company car taxation in Germany. Only half the gross list
price is used as a basis when calculating the monetary benefit from
private use of the company car.

The new BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e feature
acoustic pedestrian protection as standard. When driving electrically
at speeds of up to 30 km/h, an unmistakable sound designed
specifically for electrified BMW models is generated to alert other
road users to the approaching car without impairing the acoustic
comfort of the vehicle occupants. In addition, the standard equipment
of the two compact BMW X models with plug-in hybrid drive also
includes 17-inch light alloy wheels, 2-zone automatic air conditioning
as well as auxiliary air conditioning. The interior can be
pre-conditioned remotely via BMW Connected using a smartphone. As an
alternative to the basic version, the new BMW X1 xDrive25e is
available as a Sport Line, xLine and M Sport model. For the new
BMW X2 xDrive25e customers can choose from the following models:
Advantage, Advantage Plus, M Sport and M Sport X. In addition to the
respective equipment packages, virtually all options of the
conventionally powered BMW X1 or BMW X2 are available for the plug-in
hybrid models.

The positioning of the high-voltage battery underneath the rear seats
not only leads to a very low centre of gravity, which optimises the
agility of the BMW X1 xDrive25 and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e, but also
to a slightly reduced transport capacity compared to the
conventionally powered compact model variants. The luggage compartment
volume is fully available in primary use. In the new BMW X1 xDrive25e
luggage compartment capacity is 450 litres. With a standard split of
40: 20: 40, the folding backrests enable this to be increased to 1,470
litres. A trailer tow hitch with detachable ballhead is optionally
available for the new BMW X1 xDrive25e. The maximum trailer load is
750 kilograms.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

<pp:caseid>805387</pp:caseid><pp:summary>Model update raises desirability of BMW X1 another notch.</pp:summary>

Bold, sporty, visually striking, the new BMW X1 (fuel consumption
combined: 6.8 – 4.1 l/100 km [41.5 – 68.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions
combined: 155 – 107 g/km*) adds another chapter to the Sports Activity
Vehicle’s ongoing success story.

The new model update makes the BMW X1 an even more desirable
proposition. Key to its increased appeal are pronounced design
revisions, a high level of versatility and a host of cutting-edge
equipment features. Beneath the surface, meanwhile, powerful yet
extremely efficient three- and four-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo
engines and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive are indicative
of the driving pleasure on tap in the latest X1.

The design: eye-catching and sporty.
The current BMW X1 wasted no time post-launch in winning over
customers with its distinctive design. And the model update ensures
the compact Sports Activity Vehicle now cuts an even more handsome figure.

The X1’s new look is immediately clear, with the most prominent
revisions found at the front and rear. Each of the model variants –
from the base BMW X1 to xLine, Sport Line and M Sport – has been given
a standalone visual presence tailored precisely to its character
profile. The BMW X1 M Sport is a particularly athletic-looking option,
courtesy not least of lowered M Sport suspension, BMW Individual
High-gloss Shadow Line trim with extended features (est. available
from 11/19) and the M Aerodynamics package.

The new BMW X1 exudes a more dominant, imposing aura at the front
end, in particular. Here, a larger BMW grille – the kidneys now
merging in the centre – links up with new Adaptive LED headlights
including sharper light iconography and a bumper with integrated LED
foglamps and larger air intakes. The rear end of the X1 also houses
new stylistic features. For example, the new inlay in the body-colour
rear apron adopts the car’s main body colour. This new feature is
included as standard and lends the rear end of the BMW X1 an even
stronger sense of inherent class and coherence.

Another highlight can be found on the driver’s-side exterior mirror,
which projects a two-tone LED “X1” image when the car is unlocked.
This is far from just a visual trick; it also makes getting into and
out of the BMW X1 that much easier.

The attractive new design of the X1 is further enhanced by three new
exterior colours – Jucaro Beige metallic, Misano Blue metallic
(exclusively for the M Sport model) and the ultra-exclusive BMW
Individual Storm Bay metallic – and four new wheel designs.

The driving experience: powerful and efficient.
The model update is also an exercise in future-proofing for the
BMW X1. At launch in summer 2019, all the petrol and diesel engines
will meet the EU6d‑temp exhaust emissions standard; the BMW X1
sDrive16d and BMW X1 xDrive25d already fulfil the EU6d norm. The power
generated by the efficient yet sporty three- and four-cylinder engines
is translated – via BMW xDrive intelligent all‑wheel drive or a
cutting-edge front-wheel-drive configuration, depending on the model
variant – into dynamic performance on the road and supreme driving
pleasure over rough terrain.

The BMW X1 sDrive16d, available with either a manual six-speed
gearbox or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, is particularly
efficient. In manual guise, the combined fuel consumption of the 85 kW
(116 hp) model is just 4.4 – 4.1 l/100 km (64.2 – 68.9 mpg imp), while
CO2 emissions stand at a combined 116 – 107 g/km*. If the
seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is specified, the figures are 4.4
– 4.2 l/100 km (64.2 – 67.3 mpg imp) and 116 – 109 g CO2/km.*

Majoring on sports performance is the BMW X1 xDrive25d (fuel
consumption combined: 5.2 – 4.9 l/100 km [54.3 – 57.7 mpg imp];
CO2 emissions combined: 136 – 128 g/km*), which develops maximum
output of 170 kW (231 hp) and torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft).
Whatever the situation, the xDrive25d radiates BMW’s signature driving
pleasure. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a rapid 6.6 seconds.

The BMW X1 xDrive25i is one of the top-performing models in the range
in terms of dynamics. Its 170 kW (231 hp) engine teams up
with the precise eight-speed Steptronic transmission to propel the
car down the road with unbridled vigour. It epitomises the
multi-faceted sporting ability which distinguishes all BMW X1 models.
The xDrive25i races from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 6.5 seconds.
Combined fuel consumption comes in at 6.8 – 6.3 l/100 km (41.5 –
44.8 mpg imp), combined CO2 emissions are 155 – 144 g/km*.

The updated BMW X1 line-up now comprises 16 engine/transmission
combinations, ensuring all customers have a wealth of possibilities
from which to choose.

The suspension technology of the BMW X1 provides all models with the
fleet-footed agility familiar to customers, delivers precisely
controllable handling and imbues the car with sublime overall
dynamics. The xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system available for
many of the models in the range splits drive torque between the front
and rear axles to suit the situation at hand. The result is a
combination of supreme traction, excellent directional stability and
dynamic élan in all weather and road conditions.

Under starter’s orders: the BMW X1 xDrive25e.
The impressive efficiency of the petrol and diesel versions
offered for the new BMW X1 merely whets the appetite for the arrival
of the first BMW X1 with plug-in hybrid drive system. The debut of the
new model next year will see BMW stepping up the electrification of
its vehicle line-up once again. The BMW X1 xDrive25e (petrol
consumption combined: from 2.0 l/100 km [141.2 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions
combined: from 43 g/km**) – due to enter production in March 2020 – is
fitted with the latest, fourth-generation BMW battery technology,
which gives the battery a gross energy content of 9.7 kWh. As a
result, the plug-in-hybrid BMW X1 can cover more than 50 km** (31
miles) on electric power alone.

Equipment: versatility and connectivity.
So the driving qualities of the BMW X1 on the road are hugely
persuasive – and the same goes for the versatility of its interior.
Advanced technology joins forces with generous levels of space and
countless smart and functionally adept solutions.

The high quality standards of the BMW X1 are evident, for example, in
the new contrast stitching on the instrument panel, which is black on
its upper section and adopts the colour of the interior upholstery
lower down. The contrast stitching is available for the xLine, Sport
Line and M Sport models. In these variants of the X1, the floor mats
also gain coloured edging and contrast stitching for the edging. The
BMW X1 can also be ordered with a choice of three new upholstery variants.

One of the highlights of the BMW X1 interior is the Control Display.
A centrally mounted 6.5-inch screen is included as standard. If a
navigation system is specified, either an 8.8-inch or the new
10.25-inch Touch Control Display – which can be operated using the BMW
iDrive Controller, voice control or touchscreen technology – comes as
part of the package.

The Control Display represents the ideal platform on which to explore
the BMW X1’s richly varied infotainment offering and access the
digital services from BMW ConnectedDrive. The latest versions of these
are available as an option in the BMW X1.

The remarkable versatility of the BMW X1 is not confined to all
things digital; its interior can also be adapted to individual
requirements. For example, the rear seats can be folded down in three
sections (40:20:40) and, as an option, slide forward by up to 13 cm.
Options such as automatic tailgate operation and Comfort Access –
which team up to enable hands-free tailgate opening and closing –
raise convenience levels another notch.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

successful BMW X1, which has chalked up global sales exceeding the
800,000 mark. In China, the first generation was sold up to 200,000
times, including approx. 140,000 locally produced cars in BMW
Brilliance’s plant Tiexi. With a thorough understanding of the
consumers’ needs in this category in mind, the new-generation model
respects their requirements even further and is redefining its
segment. Accordingly, BMW has specially developed a long-wheelbase X1
for the Chinese market.

The long-wheelbase version of the new BMW X1 offers a particularly
high standard of spaciousness in the rear, at the same time as setting
the pace when it comes to versatility and quality as well. Boasting
significantly larger dimensions, a body design straight out of the
BMW X model mould, perfected functionality and a raised seating
position for driver and front passenger, it serves up an even more
intense blend of Sports Activity Vehicle DNA. A completely new
generation of engines featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and the
latest version of the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system
help to ensure outstanding driving pleasure and efficiency. A wealth
of innovative equipment features, intelligent connectivity and the
contemporary premium ambience of a cabin that also stands out for its
high-quality materials and excellent finish likewise all bear
testimony to the advances that have been made in the long-wheelbase
version of the new BMW X1 compared to its predecessor model.

The long-wheelbase version of the new BMW X1 is being built at BMW
Brilliance’s Tiexi plant in Shenyang.

The long-wheelbase version of the new BMW X1 (fuel consumption
combined: 7.3 – 6.1 l/100 km [38.7 – 46.3 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions
combined: 173 – 146 g/km) is being launched in China with a choice of
three power options. The BMW X1 sDrive18Li is powered by a
three-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 100 kW/136 hp. The
BMW X1 sDrive20Li and BMW X1 xDrive20Li models use a 141 kW/192 hp
four-cylinder petrol engine, with a further four-cylinder unit
generating a peak output of 170 kW/231 hp in the BMW X1 xDrive25Li.

All model variants deliver BMW’s trademark brand of sportiness,
together with fuel consumption and emissions figures that are
remarkably low in view of their performance. The three-cylinder engine
under the bonnet of the new BMW X1 sDrive18Li is coupled as standard
to a six-speed Steptronic transmission, while the remaining models
come equipped with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard.
The BMW X1 sDrive18Li and BMW X1 sDrive20Li models are fitted with a
front-wheel-drive system that has been tuned to produce the driving
dynamics for which the brand is renowned. In the case of the new
BMW X1 xDrive20Li and BMW X1 xDrive25Li, meanwhile, an intelligent
all-wheel-drive version designed for optimised efficiency ensures that
drive power is split between the front and rear wheels in line with
requirements at all times.

The long-wheelbase version of the new BMW X1 is available in xLine
and Sport Line models in conjunction with all engine variants and
drive configurations. Neatly coordinated equipment and design features
shine a particularly sharp spotlight on the car’s robust all-round
character or its sporting agility.

The new BMW X1 offers a variety of configurations, including a
panoramic sunroof, run-flat tyres, an outside rearview mirror assembly
integrated with electric folding, heating, parking assist and memory
functions, rear Park Distance Control alarm, keyless start,
electrically adjustable driver’s and front passenger’s seats with
memory function, Dual Zone automatic air conditioning with rear vents,
a 6.5-inch freestanding high-resolution colour display, the iDrive
operating system, a multifunction sports steering wheel, interior
lighting package, an electronic handbrake, Driving Experience Control
and Emergency Call. Another stand-out feature of the new BMW X1 Long
Wheelbase is its high level of interior comfort. The rear seat bench
with a tilt-adjustable backrest, a large panoramic glass sunroof and
the lighting package with switchable orange/white ambient lighting all
provide a particularly pleasant feeling of space.

One other optional configuration is the BMW Head-Up Display, which
projects driving-related information directly onto the windscreen and
is offered as part of the Navigation Plus package together with a
navigation system, an 8.8-inch display and a Touch Controller. Among
the other options available are Dynamic Damper Control, LED
headlights, the Driving Assistant package, the Harman Kardon surround
sound system, automatic tailgate operation, rear-view camera, front
seat heating, an automatic parking assist system, cruise control,
interconnected driving and real-time traffic information.

Commanding and versatile in the BMW X family
mould.
Its raised seating position, increased
space, stylish premium ambience and even greater interior variability
underline the status of the long-wheelbase version of the new BMW X1
as a supremely assured, multitalented addition to the segment. The
parallels with BMW Sports Activity Vehicles and Sports Activity Coupes
from higher vehicle classes are also evident in both the range of
optional driver assistance systems and the style of its interior design.

Measuring 4.56 metres long, 1.82 metres wide and 1.62 metres tall,
the proportions of the long-wheelbase version of the new BMW X1 follow
the Sports Activity Vehicle blueprint. The new model has grown in
length by some 8 centimetres compared to its predecessor, in width by
2 centimetres and in height by around 4 centimetres. These larger
dimensions, together with the new vehicle architecture, have paved the
way for the vast increase in interior spaciousness.

Excellent seating comfort and significantly more
spacious.
The long-wheelbase version of the new
BMW X1 features an exceptionally versatile interior. Compared to the
outgoing model, seating comfort has been greatly improved in the rear
in particular, where occupants are also able to enjoy considerably
more space. The amount of room passengers in the second row of seats
will find for their knees is particularly generous. Depending on the
position in which the rear seat bench is set – it can slide fore and
aft through 13 centimetres as standard – knee room is between 5 and
18 centimetres greater than that offered by the rear of the
first-generation BMW X1. The tilt-adjustable rear seat backrest
further enhances ride comfort. Also, there are lots of storage pockets
or door storage space available.

Beyond this, occupants will also find themselves immersed in a
luxurious premium ambience courtesy of the excellent quality of the
interior’s materials and finish as well as its beautifully precise
design. The arrangement of the cockpit and its controls creates the
driver-focused layout that is a BMW hallmark. The lines of the
interior trim and accent strips in the instrument panel continue into
the door panels, so that occupants in all seats are encircled by a
uniform material structure and colour scheme.

The long-wheelbase version of the new BMW X1 has a boot capacity of
between 465 and 675 litres, depending on the position of the rear seat
bench, or a capacity of 505 litres if measured based on the standard
seat position – an increase of at least 45 litres over the predecessor
model. Folding down the 40:20:40 rear seat backrest, which can also be
adjusted for angle, allows load capacity to be expanded to as much as
1,650 litres as required. Automatic tailgate operation (optional)
makes using the vehicle’s load-carrying capacity even easier, and the
Comfort Access option also includes a hands-free tailgate opening and
closing function.

Powerful presence, sturdy proportions, dynamic
lines.
Rugged proportions, a powerful presence
and dynamic lines lend the long-wheelbase version of the new BMW X1 a
commanding presence. The larger and more impactful BMW double-kidney
air inlet grille, three-section lower air intake and the
characteristic look formed by the twin circular headlights and fog
lamps below them are the stand-out features of the front end. The
stylistic underbody protection elements at the front and rear and the
square contour of the wheel cutouts all underline the solid stature of
the BMW X model. The athletic impression is complemented by the
roofline, eye-catching character lines and window
surfaces. At both rear windows, the black Air Blades further
add a distinctly sporty touch. The flat outline of the two-section,
L-shaped rear lights and the boldly flared wheel arches give added
impact to the wide track of the long-wheelbase version of the new BMW X1.

Personalised styles: cross-country xLine and sporty Sports
Line models.
The cross-country xLine model
can be identified from the side by roof rails and side window
surrounds in Aluminium satinated, coordinated side skirts in matt
Satin Silver and 18-inch bi-colour light-alloy wheels in Y-spoke
design. Its robust character is further emphasised by the underbody
protection at the front and rear in matt Satin Silver. The interior
trim comprises sports seats excellently upholstered in perforated
leather and with decorative stitching at the sides, blending perfectly
with the stitch design on the centre armrest. Also included are
contour lighting in the doors and an accent strip for the instrument
panel in Pearl Gloss Chrome. In addition, the original oak trims in
matt finish create a luxurious and comfortable interior.

Among the special features of the sporty Sports Line model’s exterior
is the specially designed BMW double-kidney air inlet grille, whose
bars – like the special air intakes, the side window surrounds and the
exterior mirror caps – come in high-gloss Black. The underbody
protection at the front and rear of the Sports Line model and its side
skirts are presented in body colour. 18-inch bi-colour light-alloy
wheels in double-spoke design round off the exterior’s sporting
appearance. Inside, the Sports Line model also comprises sports seats
excellently upholstered in perforated leather and with decorative
stitching at the sides, blending perfectly with the stitch design on
the centre armrest. Also specially provided are a combination of black
leather with red stitching and interior trim strips in high-gloss
Black with Coral Red, to create a sense of vibrant sportiness.

New generation of engines: sportiness and efficiency rooted
in BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.
The
long-wheelbase version of the new BMW X1 is available with an all-new
line-up of engines. The power units form part of the BMW Group’s new
generation of engines and distinguish themselves with instantaneous
power delivery and optimised efficiency. BMW TwinPower Turbo
technology combines with extensive BMW EfficientDynamics measures to
endow all variants of the compact BMW X model with an outstanding
balance between sportiness on the one hand and fuel efficiency on the other.

Flexible, quick to respond and more efficient than ever:
xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.
Whereas
the engine’s power is channelled to the road via a state-of-the-art
front-wheel-drive system in the new BMW X1 sDrive20Li and the new
BMW X1 sDrive18Li, the two other model variants utilise the latest
BMW xDrive smart all-wheel drive system. The remarkably optimised,
low-weight and fuel-efficient version of the smart system fitted in
the new BMW X1 xDrive20Li and BMW X1 xDrive25Li models distributes the
engine’s power between the front and rear wheels exactly as the
situation requires – at all times. Together with DSC (Dynamic
Stability Control), it allows the system to act pre-emptively to
counteract any incipient oversteer or understeer. It does this by
diverting power to the wheel or wheels where it can be transferred to
the road to maximum effect. The BMW xDrive system therefore ensures
supreme traction, optimised directional stability and enhanced
cornering dynamics in all weather and road conditions. Furthermore,
the combination of the DSC system and xDrive also includes Hill
Descent Control.

The xDrive smart system on the long-wheelbase version of the new
BMW X1 consists of a single-speed bevel gear in the front-axle drive
unit (a power take-off) and a rear-axle drive unit with an
electrohydraulically controlled hang-on multi-plate clutch. The two
are connected by a two-piece drive shaft. If necessary, the BMW xDrive
smart system is able to direct drive power to the wheels as
requirements dictate with split-second speed and without the driver noticing.

Sophisticated chassis technology – including Dynamic Damper Control.

The chassis technology of the original X1 has been
totally redeveloped for the long-wheelbase version of the new model
and now comprises a single-joint strut suspension at the front and a
multi-link rear axle. Intelligent lightweight design underpinned by a
high proportion of aluminium and high-strength steel has increased
rigidity at the same time as lowering weight. An innovative axle
mounting, model-specific elastokinematics and the sophisticated
three-way support mounts used to connect the dampers to the body
furthermore serve to enhance the car’s agility and ride comfort.

The long-wheelbase version of the new BMW X1 is equipped with
Servotronic speed-sensitive power steering and also includes Dynamic
Damper Control. The electronically controlled dampers improve the ride
comfort of the new BMW X model and sharpen its dynamic attributes. Two
damper control settings can be activated using the Driving Experience
Control switch.

Equipped with the Driving Experience Control system, DSC
dynamic stability control system and comprehensive occupant protection.

The Driving Experience Control system’s button on the
central console between the front seats allows the driver to give the
car’s set-up an even sportier, more comfort-oriented or
efficiency-optimised character by calling up COMFORT, SPORT or ECO PRO
mode at the touch of a button. Other than the Anti-lock Braking System
(ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Brake Assist system and
Start-Off Assistant, the DSC dynamic stability control system also
comes with the Active Differential Brake (ADB) and Performance Control
functions. Performance Control helps imbue the car with dynamic
cornering characteristics by distributing engine power and braking
force in a shrewdly measured way. Moving a higher proportion of drive
power to the outside wheels through corners, it counteracts any
tendency to understeer without waiting for stability to reach a
critical point. This ensures an agile and neutral cornering attitude.

The body structure of the long-wheelbase version of the new BMW X1
can be noted both for its improved torsional rigidity and for its
optimised weight – the result of an intelligent mix of body materials.
This has the effect of enhancing agility and efficiency at the same
time as providing outstanding occupant protection. The impact
generated in a collision is diverted and absorbed with the aid of
precisely defined load paths and generously sized deformation zones.
The interior comes with a full complement of safety features,
including front and side airbags, as well as head/curtain airbags at
the sides and three-point inertia-reel seatbelts for all seats. All
model variants ride on run-flat tyres as standard.

Innovative driver assistance systems: added driving pleasure
through intelligent connectivity.

The rich variety of assistance systems compared with
those already available for the original model underlines the
overwhelming superiority achieved by the long-wheelbase version of the
new BMW X1 in the research of intelligent connectivity. The Navigation
system assists route guidance by showing direction arrows and
high-quality multi-view map images on the 6.5-inch Control Display.
Another option is the Navigation Plus system, comprising an 8.8-inch
Control Display, an instrument cluster with extended features, a
split-screen function for the Control Display, an iDrive Touch
Controller button and the BMW Head-Up Display. This system allows High
Guidance instructions, including lane recommendations, to be shown on
the instrument cluster’s TFT display or projected onto the windscreen,
as desired. The BMW Head-Up Display projects information – including
the current speed in digits, Check Control messages and readouts from
the Speed Limit Info system – directly into the driver’s field of
view, allowing them to register the information without having to
divert their gaze away from the road ahead.

The rear-view camera, whose images are transferred onto the Control
Display, together with the Parking Assistant, which helps the driver
to find and make use of parallel parking spaces, facilitate precise
and easy manoeuvring. The Driving Assistant includes Lane Departure
Warning, Speed Limit Info with No Passing Info display, the
anti-dazzle High Beam Assistant, as well as Collision Warning and
Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function.

boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment
it first entered 30 years ago. Around one in three BMW cars sold
around the world is now equipped with the intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel-drive system. BMW’s success in this segment has been driven
not only by the ever-popular BMW X models but also by all-wheel-drive
models based on the other model series, from the BMW 1 Series to the
BMW 7 Series. Across these model series, a large choice of AWD models
is offered in a wide range of engine versions. At the same time, BMW
continues to refine this technology and take it in new directions. By
offering BMW xDrive in combination with a hybrid drive and with a
front-wheel-drive platform, the company has repeatedly demonstrated
its proficiency in the all-wheel-drive field, proficiency that will
secure BMW’s position at the forefront of this sector well into the
future. Today, BMW offers more than 110 models – of either
transmission type – with BMW xDrive in 12 different model series, as
well as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car and the compact BMW 225xe
with electrified all-wheel drive.

The focus from day one: traction and dynamics.

BMW’s first foray into the all-wheel-drive market came
with the unveiling of the BMW 325i “Allrad” at the Frankfurt Motor
Show (IAA) in 1985. From the outside, the newcomer didn’t immediately
reveal its inner qualities, so its performance when the journalists
took it out on the test track was even more of an eye-opener. This
very first BMW all-wheel-drive system not only improved traction away
from surfaced roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also made
for more dynamic handling through corners. “The new BMW is the new
champion when it comes to handling,” was the verdict of the testers
from German car magazine Auto Zeitung not long after the first unveiling.

Today, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system takes
typical BMW driving dynamics to new levels. The current generation of
this system is controlled by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM)
system, which ensures that xDrive always responds appropriately at the
earliest possible moment, based on reliable sensing and monitoring of
the current driving situation. The interventions may be performed
either entirely by BMW xDrive, or by xDrive in combination with
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Performance Control (DPC).
The resulting fast and precise control of drive power distribution
ensures typical BMW handling characteristics even under extremely
dynamic cornering.

The all-wheel-drive system is biased towards the typical BMW
rear-wheel-drive characteristics. That is to say, on the
all-wheel-drive models a greater share of the drive power is sent to
the rear wheels, even under normal driving conditions. This maintains
the typical BMW precise steering response, with virtually no torque
steer. For crisp turn-in and high tracking stability, the
latest-generation BMW xDrive system starts increasing the amount of
power sent to the rear wheels as soon as the vehicle enters a corner,
further enhancing the driving pleasure for which BMW is a byword.

BMW all-wheel-drive technology: continuous evolution since 1985.
The full-time all-wheel-drive system featured on the BMW 325i
“Allrad” of 1985 split the drive power in a ratio of 37 to 63 per cent
between the front and rear wheels. In response to wheel speed
differences, visco locks in the transfer case and rear differential
were capable of providing a virtually rigid connection between the
front and rear wheels, in order to improve traction and stability.
This model’s name was soon changed to BMW 325iX, and from 1988 it was
offered in a “touring” version as well (lower-case spelling up to and
including the E46 series).

1991: BMW 525iX.
Three years on, BMW introduced an all-wheel-drive model in the
BMW 5 Series too. For the first time, the power split was now
electronically controlled. The newly developed system featured
multi-plate clutches that allowed the default 36:64 front-to-rear
power split to be varied seamlessly and automatically in line with
driving conditions. Initially a hydraulically controlled multi-plate
clutch was used at the rear axle, but this was later replaced by
electronically controlled selective braking intervention. The system
monitored the driving situation using wheel speed signals from the
Anti-lock Braking System, supplemented by further information about
brake status, engine speed and throttle valve position.

From the outset the all-wheel-drive system of the BMW 525iX was a
class apart. The electronic control system delivered a very fast and
precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics
even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In
the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered
in both Sedan and touring versions.

1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.
In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle
concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first
Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving
dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the
time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in
this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of
38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic
control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X
(Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured
the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle
challenging conditions off the beaten track.

In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept,
there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at
BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s
all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation
of the BMW 3 Series.

2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.
Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up
the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle
segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered
even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only
premium model in its class for years to come.

The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was
introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon
extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely
fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive
worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to
continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving
situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the
electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability
Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position
and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s
first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike
conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least
one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of
oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively
corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.

In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent
all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on
the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring
models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced
in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold
worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its
second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.

2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid
drive.
With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly
established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to
present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the
Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical
dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For
the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined
with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power
split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled
agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on
overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further
perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile,
in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its
range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive
system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6
M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the
all-wheel-drive market.

2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many
years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of
its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also
combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes
the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing
engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and
taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.

BMW xDrive also available for other model series.
The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by
an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW
model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision,
BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal
combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time
before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7
Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive
Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6
Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5
Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe
models of the new BMW 4 Series.

Driving progress ever forward.
BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with
the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers
a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and
contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is
available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW
also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second
generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW
xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This
was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined
its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new
front-wheel-drive format.

With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step
in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system.
This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in
hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving
the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the
front wheels.

Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.
BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances
that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was
followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in
hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to
full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics
technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and
effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent
hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal
combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all
times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The
drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the
full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.
In September 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series
makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This high-end
BMW luxury model pioneers groundbreaking innovations on all fronts,
and will be available with BMW xDrive from its market launch in
October. The new luxury sedan will also be the first model to allow
intelligent all-wheel-drive to be combined with Integral Active
Steering – that is to say with passively steering rear wheels.

in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its
range of high-performance sports cars.
