München/Dingolfing. Eén uit twee miljoen: een BMW i5 M60 xDrive Sedan in BMW Individual Tansanit metallic, geassembleerd in de BMW Group Fabriek Dingolfing, is het twee miljoenste volledig elektrische voertuig dat door de BMW Group is geproduceerd. Dit mijlpaalmodel gaat naar een klant in Spanje.

BMW Group Fabriek Dingolfing: thuisbasis van de meeste volledig elektrische modellen
In 2021 begon de BMW Group Fabriek Dingolfing met de serieproductie van volledig elektrische modellen, te starten met de BMW iX. Tegenwoordig bouwt deze locatie het grootste aanbod aan BEV-modellen binnen BMW Group: de BMW iX, de BMW i5 Sedan en Touring, en de BMW i7. Sinds 2021 zijn er al meer dan 320.000 volledig elektrische modellen geproduceerd op deze locatie in Neder-Beieren. Dat betekent dat bijna één op de zes van de in totaal twee miljoen volledig elektrische modellen van de BMW Group uit Dingolfing komt. In 2025 was meer dan een kwart van de voertuigen die in de BMW Group Fabriek Dingolfing werden geproduceerd volledig elektrisch.

Duidelijke strategie met maximale flexibiliteit
Als onderdeel van de BMW iFACTORY blijft BMW Group in haar fabrieken een technologie-open benadering hanteren: voertuigen met verschillende aandrijflijnen worden flexibel in een gemengde productie op één productielijn gebouwd. Al meerdere jaren wordt in elke Duitse BMW Group Fabriek minimaal één volledig elektrisch model geproduceerd. Elektromobiliteit is inmiddels de standaard binnen het productienetwerk van het bedrijf. Daarmee levert BMW Group een belangrijke bijdrage aan het feit dat Duitsland vandaag de dag de op één na grootste productielocatie ter wereld is voor elektrische auto’s. 

Shenyang. The BMW i5 that recently rolled off the production line at Plant Dadong in China was a milestone: the fully electric model in Frozen Pure Grey was the 6 millionth car to be made by the BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA) joint venture. It took just 15 months to produce the last million cars, with the five-million mark passed only in February of last year. The new milestone is evidence of the sheer dynamism and competitiveness of the plant network in Shenyang, where production volumes remain high even as the BBA plants prepare for the Neue Klasse.

“The 6 millionth car is a symbol of the outstanding achievements here in Shenyang,” said Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production. “Just like in all our other plants around the world, the focus here is on competitiveness and innovativeness.”

Artificial intelligence supports quality assurance

The landmark vehicle underwent all the usual rigorous quality checks that take place in Plant Shenyang, including Automatic Surface Inspection in the paint shop. Here, each car is photographed 100,000 times and artificial intelligence is used to identify impurities, fibres, scratches or other minor defects in the paintwork – reliably and precise to the millimetre. Any irregularities are marked on the surface by laser and remedied.

Preparations for the Neue Klasse forge ahead

Meanwhile Shenyang is also preparing to launch production of the Neue Klasse. The BMW Group is currently erecting five high-voltage battery assembly facilities on three continents around the world, one of them in Shenyang where, after an investment of 10 billion RMB, sixth-generation high-voltage batteries will be produced. The building for the new facility was completed last November, and the installation of plant and equipment has been underway since March of this year. The first pre-series batteries are expected to roll off the production line at the end of this year. At the same time, comprehensive tests and localisation certifications are starting at the local R&D centre.

The Neue Klasse is due for launch worldwide in 2025, with China making its first Neue Klasse models from 2026. All three BBA plants – Dadong, Tiexi and Lydia – can already make fully electric cars.

Rijswijk. Consistente elektrificatie en digitale innovaties.
De BMW 5 Serie toont zijn vooruitstrevende karakter met zijn aandrijflijntechnologie, zijn innovatieve digitale diensten, evenals een elegant sportief ontwerp, royale ruimte in de auto, geoptimaliseerd akoestisch comfort en een vooruitstrevende premium sfeer voor het interieur. Geavanceerde assistentiesystemen zoals de Highway Assistant met actieve Lane Change Assistant met oogbevestiging benadrukken de langeafstandskwaliteiten van de BMW 5 Serie. Tot op heden is de Lane Change Assistant met oogbevestiging alleen beschikbaar voor de Verenigde Staten, Canada en Duitsland. Met het display en het bedienings- en bedieningssysteem BMW iDrive met QuickSelect, het BMW Curved Display en de BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant met uitgebreide functionaliteit aan boord, is de i5 volledig ingesteld voor interactie tussen de gebruiker en de auto via aanraak- en spraakbediening. Als volledig geïntegreerd lid van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie modellengamma biedt de BMW i5 lokaal emissievrij rijplezier. De rijdynamiek en efficiëntie van de BMW i5 vinden hun oorsprong in de BMW eDrive-technologie van de vijfde generatie. Dit omvat sterk geïntegreerde aandrijfeenheden en hoogspanningsbatterijen met een hoge energiedichtheid. Bovendien helpen de nieuwste evolutie van adaptieve recuperatie en een intelligente combinatie van warmtepomptechnologie voor het verwarmen en koelen van het interieur, het aandrijfsysteem en de hoogspanningsbatterij de auto om in de WLTP-cyclus een actieradius van maximaal 579 kilometer te bereiken, afhankelijk van het model en de specificatie. De Combined Charging Unit van de BMW i5 maakt AC-opladen mogelijk met een snelheid van maximaal 22 kW en DC-opladen met maximaal 205 kW. Dit betekent dat men in slechts 10 minuten 156 kilometer kunnen bijladen wanneer de auto is aangesloten op een snellaadstation.

Het volledige portfolio van verbrandingsmotoren is ook geëlektrificeerd. Dankzij een flexibel ontworpen aandrijfarchitectuur die vanaf het begin openstond voor verschillende technologieën, kan de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan voor het eerst worden aangeboden als een volledig elektrisch model, met plug-in hybride systemen en met zeer efficiënte benzine- en dieselmotoren. De verbrandingsmotoren van de nieuwe modulaire generatie BMW Group Efficient Dynamics-motoren zijn allemaal voorzien van de nieuwste versie van 48-volt mild hybrid-technologie.

BMW wint haar negende titel bij de World Car Awards.
De World Car Awards werden 20 jaar geleden in het leven geroepen om, naast nationale en regionale onderscheidingen, te staan als erkenning voor uitmuntende innovaties en nieuwe producten op de automarkten wereldwijd. Dit jaar werden de awards in totaal in vijf categorieën uitgereikt, naast de hoofdprijs.

In de loop der jaren heeft BMW acht overwinningen behaald bij de World Car Awards. Een van de overwinnaars was de BMW 7 Serie, die in 2016 werd bekroond tot World Luxury Car. In 2018 werd de titel World Performance Car uitgereikt aan de BMW M5. Deze negende titeloverwinning is de laatste in een lange reeks onderscheidingen die de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie de afgelopen maanden heeft behaald. Alleen al de volledig elektrische versie heeft in totaal 3 “Auto van het Jaar”-prijzen (uit Noorwegen, Denemarken en Italië) weten te bemachtigen.

München/Los Angeles. BMW Group presenteert een samensmelting van kunst en innovatie op de kunstbeurs Frieze Los Angeles in de vorm van de BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA. Het unieke voertuig combineert door BMW ontwikkelde kleurveranderingstechnologie met de artistieke taal van de Zuid-Afrikaanse kunstenaar Esther Mahlangu. Het designstuk, met folie die elektronisch kunnen worden geanimeerd, belichaamt de nieuwste ontwikkeling op het gebied van kleurveranderingstechnologie voor voertuigoppervlakken in samenwerking met E Ink.
De BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA viert zijn wereldpremière tijdens de opening van de beurs op 29 februari. Dit hedendaagse eerbetoon doet denken aan de BMW Art Car die in 1991 is ontworpen door Mahlangu. “De BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA eert de geschiedenis van het merk BMW en vervolgt het verhaal van onze wereldwijde culturele betrokkenheid op een unieke manier. Het combineert kunst en design door middel van vooruitstrevende technologie. Hier wordt technologie zelf kunst”, zegt Adrian van Hooydonk, Hoofd van BMW Group Design.

In 1991 ontwierp Mahlangu de 12e BMW Art Car, gebaseerd op een BMW 525i — waarmee zij de eerste vrouw en eerste Afrikaanse kunstenaar werd die dat deed. “Haar kunst inspireerde me jaren geleden, toen het concept van kleurverandering op een auto nog maar een idee in mijn hoofd was”, zegt Stella Clarke, Research Engineer Open Innovations bij BMW Group. “Het is absoluut surrealistisch om dit idee te kunnen realiseren en met Esther Mahlangu te kunnen samenwerken.” De kenmerkende kleuren en geometrische patronen van de 88-jarige artiest zijn perfect om de innovatieve Flow-technologie tot leven te brengen op de BMW i5.


De veelzijdigheid van de elektroforetische kleurveranderingen maakt van de volledig elektrische sedan een dynamisch kunstwerk. “Ik vind het fascinerend om te zien hoe moderne technologie mijn kunst kan uitbreiden en toegankelijk kan maken voor een compleet nieuw publiek”, zegt Mahlangu.

Mahlangu's kunst ontmoet geavanceerde technologie.
In de BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA, die vernoemd is naar de eerste zoon van Mahlangu, is folie aangebracht die elektronisch kunnen worden geanimeerd, met twee strips over het dak, de motorkap en de achterkant, evenals over de zijkanten van het voertuig. Net als bij een e-book reader zitten er meerdere miljoenen microcapsules in elke E Ink-folie. De structuur en rangschikking van de kleurdeeltjes die ze bevatten kunnen worden gewijzigd door een elektrische spanning aan te leggen. Hierdoor kunnen de typische kleuren en patronen van Mahlangu's kunst worden gegenereerd in voortdurend veranderende composities.

De animaties worden ook begeleid door een even bijzonder geluid, speciaal gecomponeerd door Renzo Vitale, Creative Director Sound van BMW Group, voor de BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA. Om de soundscape van het merk BMW te combineren met die van de Zuid-Afrikaanse Ndebele-cultuur, gebruikte Vitale sequenties van Mahlangu's stem, evenals het geluid van de verenborstels die ze gebruikte om te schilderen. Deze werden gecombineerd met geluiden van de kleurpotloden die in de BMW-designstudio werden gebruikt en het akoestische signaal dat als feedback werd gehoord bij het bedienen van het aanraakscherm van de BMW i5. Dit creëerde een geluidsmix die zachtjes begint bij het begin van elke kleurverandering en in intensiteit toeneemt naarmate de animatie vordert.

Om elk detail van de complexe versiering nauwkeurig na te bootsen, is de BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA uitgerust met 1.349 foliedelen, die elk afzonderlijk kunnen worden bediend. Het lasersnijproces dat werd gebruikt om de folie te trimmen en het elektronische besturingsontwerp zijn ontwikkeld in samenwerking met E Ink. De aanpassing van de technologie voor gebogen oppervlakken, evenals de geprogrammeerde animaties, zijn allemaal interne ontwikkelingen van BMW Group.

Over het algemeen ontwikkelt de technologie voor kleurverandering zich snel. De in 2022 gepresenteerde BMW iX Flow met E Ink had de mogelijkheid om met een druk op de knop over te schakelen van wit naar zwart. Dit werd slechts een jaar later gevolgd door de eerste veelkleurige implementatie. De 240 foliedelen die op de BMW i Vision Dee zijn aangebracht, konden tot 32 kleuren weergeven. Deze laatste ontwikkelingsfase maakt nu nog meer kleuren en patronen mogelijk. Tegelijkertijd zijn de delen van de folie robuuster, wat de mogelijke toekomstige serieproductie zou kunnen vergemakkelijken. Voorlopig blijft de BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA uniek.

Eerbetoon aan een baanbrekende kunstenaar en haar werk.
Als wereldwijd gerespecteerde kunstenaar staat Esther Mahlangu bekend om haar Ndebele-schilderijen, waarvan de versiering oorspronkelijk symbool stond voor grote gebeurtenissen of feestelijke gelegenheden. Mahlangu scheidde de ontwerpen van hun oorspronkelijke betekenis en bracht ze voor het eerst over op canvas, tapijten en alledaagse voorwerpen, en bewaarde ze zo voor de toekomst. De BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA herinterpreteert deze artistieke taal nu.

Met de presentatie van deze designauto op Frieze Los Angeles zet BMW haar langdurige samenwerking met de gerenommeerde kunstbeurs voort. Tegelijkertijd zal de BMW Art Car die de basis vormde voor dit eerbetoon ook voor het eerst in meer dan 30 jaar te zien zijn in Zuid-Afrika als onderdeel van de tentoonstelling georganiseerd door de Iziko Museums of South Africa en BMW Group in Kaapstad: “Then I Knew I Was Good at Painting”: Esther Mahlangu. A Retrospective”. De tentoonstelling, die loopt tot 11 augustus 2024, eert het levenswerk van een van de meest invloedrijke kunstenaars en culturele ambassadeurs van Zuid-Afrika.

In Los Angeles presenteert BMW opnieuw Frieze Music in samenwerking met Frieze. Sinds 2019 heeft het gezamenlijke initiatief van de twee partners een grote groep muzikanten samengebracht op het snijvlak van muziek en kunst. De terugkeer van het evenement naar Los Angeles wordt op 29 februari gevierd met een live optreden van Sudan Archives in het Hammer Museum.

Rijswijk. De BMW 5 Serie Touring, het toonbeeld van rijplezier, sportieve elegantie en moderne functionaliteit in het premium hogere middensegment, gaat een nieuw tijdperk in. De zesde generatie van de BMW 5 Serie Touring is vooruitstrevender dan ooit, met talrijke digitale innovaties, baanbrekende systemen voor automatisch rijden en parkeren, duurzamer gedurende de hele levenscyclus van het product en, voor het eerst, volledig elektrisch in de vorm van de BMW i5 Touring. De nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Touring biedt een ideale combinatie van BMW typerend rijplezier en een hoge mate van comfort op lange reizen.

Dankzij een flexibele architectuur kunnen modelvarianten met zeer efficiënte benzine- en dieselmotoren, Plug-in Hybride en puur elektrische aandrijflijn worden geproduceerd op één productielijn in de BMW Group Fabriek Dingolfing. Dynamisch uitgestrekte proporties en royaal gevormde oppervlakken, de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Touring heeft een atletisch zijaanzicht dat wordt bepaald door een hoge schouderlijn, krachtig gevormde achterwielkasten en twee nauwkeurig geplaatste karakterlijnen. De opvallende voorzijde is voorzien van een moderne interpretatie van de kenmerkende dubbele koplampen en iconische BMW nierengrille. Twee verticale LED elementen dienen respectievelijk als richtingaanwijzer en dagrijverlichting. De BMW nierengrille, die ver naar voren uitsteekt, is voorzien van optionele BMW Iconic Glow nierengrilleverlichting. De achterlichten op de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Touring kenmerken zich door de bekende L-vorm. De zijdorpel en achterbumper hebben beide een donkere afwerking aan de onderzijde waardoor de gehele carrosserie lager oogt. Hierdoor krijgt de auto een sportief silhouette.

Het lakassortiment omvat vanaf het begin van de productie drie BMW Individual exterieurkleuren. De standaarduitrusting van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Touring omvat lichtmetalen wielen van 18 inch voor de Mild Hybrid benzine- en dieselmodellen en 19 inch voor de volledig elektrische en de Plug-in Hybride modellen. Optioneel zijn lichtmetalen wielen tot 21 inch verkrijgbaar. Het dynamische karakter van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Touring kan verder worden benadrukt met het M Sportpakket, M Sportpakket Pro en M Carbon Exterieur pakket. Als topmodel in de serie is de BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring standaard voorzien van exterieurcomponenten die de uitstekende rijdynamiek duidelijk tot uitdrukking brengen.

Progressief ontworpen dashboard, volledig veganistisch interieur.
Het hart van het vooruitstrevende, op de bestuurder gerichte interieurontwerp wordt gevormd door het BMW Curved Display. Het 12,3-inch informatiedisplay en het bedieningsdisplay met een schermdiagonaal van 14,9 inch vormen een volledig digitale cockpit. De moderne premium sfeer in het interieur wordt nog verder versterkt door de nieuwe sportstoelen met stoelverwarming die standaard zijn gemonteerd, het stuurwiel, dat nu platter is aan de onderkant, en de optionele BMW Interaction Bar. De BMW Interaction Bar is standaard op de elektrische varianten van de BMW 5 Serie Touring.

De nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Touring heeft standaard een volledig veganistisch interieur. De zitvlakken in Veganza zijn optioneel ook verkrijgbaar met een decoratieve perforatie. Daarnaast is er optioneel ook keuze uit BMW Individual Merino lederen bekleding in verschillende tweekleurige varianten. Andere hoogtepunten van het optionele uitrustingsprogramma zijn het glazen panoramadak, Crafted Clarity bedieningelementen en het Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System met maximaal 18 luidsprekers.

Geoptimaliseerde functionaliteit voor dagelijks gebruik, vrije tijd en reizen.
De nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Touring biedt meer ruimte dan zijn voorganger en merkbaar meer been-, schouder- en elleboogruimte, vooral achterin, en geoptimaliseerd akoestisch comfort. Met zijn veelzijdige interieur en talrijke intelligente functies is de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Touring op de weg net zo indrukwekkend als bij dagelijks gebruik.

Een bredere opening in de bagageruimte in combinatie met een lage dorpel maakt het gemakkelijk om grote bagagestukken op te bergen. Ongeacht hun aandrijflijntechnologie hebben alle varianten van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Touring een bagageruimtevolume dat kan worden uitgebreid van 570 tot 1.700 liter. Naast de automatische bediening van de achterklep is het ook standaard om de rugleuning van de 40:20:40 achterbank vanuit de bagageruimte naar voren te klappen. De opbergvakken onder de bagageruimtevloer bieden ruimte voor het scheidingsnet voor de bagageruimte, de bagageruimteafdekking en de oplaadkabel voor de volledig elektrische en Plug-in Hybride modellen.

Unieke propositie in het segment: De volledig elektrische BMW i5 Touring is vanaf het begin verkrijgbaar in twee varianten.
De nieuwe BMW i5 Touring is de eerste volledig elektrische premium stationwagen in zijn klasse. Vanaf het begin zijn twee versies beschikbaar. In de BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring vormen twee sterke elektromotoren op de voor- en achteras samen voor een systeemvermogen van maximaal 442 kW/601 pk. Als M Launch Control of M Sport Boost is geactiveerd, wordt het systeemkoppel tijdelijk verhoogd van 795 Nm tot 820 Nm. Het topmodel accelereert vanuit stilstand naar 100 km/u in 3,9 seconden en de topsnelheid is elektronisch begrensd op 230 km/h. De elektromotor van de BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring bevindt zich op de achteras en genereert een maximaal vermogen van 250 kW/340 pk en een maximumkoppel van maximaal 430 Nm met Sport Boost- of Launch Control-functie. De BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring accelereert in 6,1 seconden van 0 naar 100 km/u.

In beide modellen heeft het accupakket een bruikbare energie inhoud van 81,2 kWh. Naast de efficiënte elektromotoren dragen adaptieve recuperatie en warmtepomptechnologie voor het verwarmen en koelen van het interieur en de aandrijving bij aan de actieradius van de BMW i5 Touring. De actieradius op basis van de WLTP-testcyclus bedraagt tot 506 kilometer voor de BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring en tot 560 kilometer voor de BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring. 

Innovatieve laadoplossingen van BMW Charging.
De accu kan worden opgeladen met AC wisselstroom met een vermogen tot maximaal 11 kW als standaard en optioneel tot 22 kW (standaard voor BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring). De hoogspanningsbatterij kan worden opgeladen met DC gelijkstroom tot een vermogen van maximaal 205 kW. Anticiperend thermisch beheer voor de hoogspanningsbatterij optimaliseert de efficiëntie bij het gebruik van snellaadstations. De BMW i5 Touring is ook geschikt voor de Plug & Charge bij geschikte laadpalen.

Nieuwe dieselmotoren met 48-volt Mild Hybrid-technologie.
Alle dieselmotoren die beschikbaar zijn voor de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Touring worden gecombineerd met 48-volt Mild Hybrid systeem en een achttraps BMW Steptronic automatische sporttransmissie met schakelflippers achter het stuurwiel. De viercilinder-in-lijn dieselmotor van de BMW 520d Touring die beschikbaar is bij de marktintroductie genereert een maximaal vermogen van 145 kW/197 pk en een maximumkoppel van 400 Nm. Naar wens van de klant is dit model ook beschikbaar met BMW xDrive vierwielaandrijving in de vorm van de BMW 520d xDrive Touring. Uitbreiding van het aandrijflijnenportfolio volgt in de zomer van 2024 met een Plug-in Hybride variant en een zescilinder-in-lijn dieselmotor.

De ideale balans tussen sportiviteit en reiscomfort.
Het rijplezier in de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Touring is gebaseerd op een ideale balans tussen sportiviteit en reiscomfort. Met de langste wielbasis in zijn segment, grote spoorbreedtes, een bijna perfect uitgebalanceerde 50:50 gewichtsverdeling, intelligente lichtgewicht constructie en geoptimaliseerde stijfheid van de verbinding tussen carrosserie en chassis, is de BMW 5 Serie Touring de ideale allrounder. De sterk verbeterde ondersteltechnologie omvat standaard direct geregelde wielslipbegrenzing en de nieuwste versie van het geïntegreerde remsysteem. De BMW i5 Touring en de Plug-in Hybride modellen beschikken altijd standaard over luchtvering op de achteras, inclusief automatische niveauregeling.

Het M Sport onderstel, een M sportremsysteem en het Adaptieve Onderstel Professional (standaard in de BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring) met elektronisch geregelde schokdempers, geïntegreerde achterwielbesturing (tot 2,5 graden) en nieuwe onderstel dynamiek zijn als optionele uitrusting verkrijgbaar. Het M Adaptieve onderstel Professional met Active Roll Stabilization en Active Roll Comfort is optioneel beschikbaar voor de BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring.

Innovatieve systemen voor automatisch rijden en parkeren.
De systemen voor semi-automatisch rijden en parkeren die standaard of als optie beschikbaar zijn voor de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Touring, bepalen de norm in het segment met hun scala aan functies, betrouwbaarheid en dagelijkse voordelen. In de Verenigde Staten, Canada en Duitsland is voor het eerst de Highway Assistant beschikbaar waarmee de auto volledig het sturen op de snelweg kan overnemen. Een wereldprimeur daarbij is Active Lane Change Assistant met ‘oogbediening’. (deze functionaliteit is in Nederland niet beschikbaar) De BMW stelt voor om van rijstrook te wisselen indien de verkeerssituatie dit nodig maakt en voor het eerst is het voor de bestuurder voldoende om in de buitenspiegel te kijken om de manoeuvre te bevestigen alsmede te activeren.

De nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Touring is standaard uitgerust met de parkeerassistent inclusief trailerassistent en achteruitrijcamera. Met Parking Assistant Professional kunnen parkeer- en manoeuvreermanoeuvres van maximaal 200 meter buiten het voertuig via een smartphone bedient worden.

MW iDrive met “QuickSelect”, videostreaming, AirConsole-games.
Het verbeterde BMW iDrive display en besturingssysteem op basis van BMW Operating System 8.5 biedt een opnieuw ontworpen startscherm en de “QuickSelect” functionaliteit. De combinatie van het BMW Curved Display en de BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is ontworpen voor bediening via touchscreen en via spraaksturing. De standaard BMW Live Cockpit Plus bevat het cloudgebaseerde navigatiesysteem BMW Maps. De optionele BMW Live Cockpit Professional omvat onder andere het BMW Head-Up Display. De nieuwe BMW iDrive maakt onder andere ook het gebruik mogelijk van een innovatieve vorm van gamen in de auto met het gamingplatform AirConsole.

De nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Touring is standaard uitgerust met twee 5G-antennes voor mobiele telefoons en vier als optie. Dit zorgt voor een optimale ontvangst voor telefonie en online diensten. De standaarduitrusting omvat ook een geoptimaliseerde smartphone-integratie via Apple CarPlay® en Android Auto™. Met de functie Remote Software Upgrades blijft de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Touring altijd up-to-date met de nieuwste software. Het is ook mogelijk om geselecteerde functies te testen en opnieuw te boeken in de BMW ConnectedDrive Store.

Woodcliff Lake / Munich. BMW will return to the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 11, 2024 with a new 60-second advertisement for the all-new generation of the iconic BMW 5 Series, highlighted by the first-ever, 100%-electric BMW i5. The star-studded commercial entitled “Talkin’ Like Walken,” also features another icon –  Hollywood icon Christopher Walken – along with actress Ashley Park (Emily in Paris, Beef, Joy Ride), and GRAMMY^® Award Winning global superstar and Super Bowl LVIII halftime performer, USHER.

The 60-second spot plays off of Walken’s instantly recognizable voice and signature speech cadence, following the actor throughout a typical day as he encounters a never-ending stream of imitators – from his hotel valet, his tailor, makeup artist, and even his drive-through barista. Initially confused by the mimics, Walken grows increasingly frustrated. The spot culminates in a chance encounter with USHER, with Walken asking: “Don’t you got somewhere to be?” “Talkin’ Like Walken” is set to air during the first quarter of Super Bowl LVIII.

“I really enjoyed working with BMW, they are a wonderful company and electric cars are important,” said Walken. “I look forward to sharing the work we did together.”

“It’s an honor of a lifetime to perform at the Super Bowl and so great to work with BMW,” said USHER. “Making the commercial was a cool experience, and I hope you all enjoy it.”

BMW’s lead U.S. creative agency, Goodby Silverstein & Partners (GS&P), created the comical campaign. It was directed by two-time Academy Award–nominated director Bryan Buckley, who is acclaimed for his work on close to 70 Super Bowl commercials. Famed cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema (Oppenheimer and Interstellar) directed the photography.

“When you think about the perfect Super Bowl ad, you quickly realize that there’s a recipe for success,” said Marcus Casey, Chief Marketing Officer, BMW of North America. “Not that it’s easy, but if you start with an exciting new product, an A-List Hollywood star, a great script, and a talented team, and add to that mix, the multitalented Ashley Park, and a global superstar such as USHER, you have the makings of a hilarious, memorable spot.”

In the lead-up to the big game, BMW released two teasers for the spot. The first, “Agent,” poked fun at the tradition of Super Bowl ad teasers with Walken quizzically asking his agent, “So it’s an ad for an ad?” A second, follow-up teaser titled “Singing” featured Walken driving the electric BMW i5 while listening to USHER’s hit song, “Yeah!”, foreshadowing the singer’s surprise appearance.

“Christopher Walken is iconic, as is the BMW 5 Series. It’s one icon working with another, creating a synergy of two legendary figures. You wait your whole life to make a campaign like this,” added Rich Silverstein, Co-Chairman and Co-Founder of GS&P. “The reality is everyone has a Walken impression. But there’s only one original.”

The campaign will also involve social media extensions including a TikTok activation which challenges creators to give their own spin on a Walken impression to get all of social media #TalkinlikeWalken.

Rijswijk. Toevoegingen aan het modelgamma en het optieaanbod zullen vanaf het voorjaar van 2024 de aantrekkingskracht en diversiteit van het BMW portfolio verder vergroten. De BMW i5 eDrive40 Sedan is per direct beschikbaar als M Sport Edition. De volledig elektrische modellen BMW i5 Sedan en BMW iX2 zijn vanaf maart 2024 elk verkrijgbaar met een nieuwe aandrijflijn. Het aanbod van aandrijflijnen voor de reguliere BMW X2 en de BMW XM is ook uitgebreid. Nieuwe exterieurkleuren voor de BMW 5 Serie Sedan, BMW X2 en BMW iX2. Bij de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie wordt het aanbod van de interieurbekledingen verder uitgebreid.

In het voorjaar van 2024 zullen nieuwe functies worden geïntroduceerd op het gebied van digitale diensten. Deze omvatten een eenvoudiger gebruik van de spraakassistent Siri (als onderdeel van de integratie van de Apple CarPlay in auto's die zijn gespecificeerd met BMW Operating System 9) en de geoptimaliseerde weergave van beoordelingen voor laadstations voor volledig elektrische en Plug-in Hybride BMW modellen. BMW i5 eDrive40 Sedan M Sport Edition.
De BMW i5 eDrive40 Sedan is nu leverbaar als M Sport Edition vanaf €77.942, - consumentenadviesprijs. Met de M Sport Edition wordt het krachtige en sportieve design van de BMW i5 Sedan extra benadrukt door het M Sportpakket en een BMW metallic exterieurkleur uit het reguliere aanbod. Ander hoogtepunt is de Driving Assistant Plus die de standaard geleverde Driving Assistant verder uitbreidt met onder andere Active Cruise Control met Stop & Go functie en  Steering & Lane Control Assist.

BMW i5 xDrive40: derde volledig elektrische variant van de zakelijke sedan.
In maart 2024 wordt een derde volledig elektrische variant toegevoegd aan het portfolio van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan. De nieuwe BMW i5 xDrive40 Sedan (elektriciteitsverbruik, gecombineerd: 19,8 — 17,2 kWh/100 km in de WLTP-cyclus) heeft een krachtige elektrische motor op de voor- en achteras die samen een systeemvermogen van maximaal 290 kW/394 pk en een maximumkoppel van 590 Nm leveren. Geholpen door BMW xDrive vierwielaandrijving accelereert de BMW i5 xDrive40 Sedan in 5,4 seconden van 0 naar 100 km/u. De topsnelheid bedraagt een elektronisch begrensde snelheid van 215 km/h.

De derde volledig elektrische modelvariant van de nieuwe zakensedan haalt zijn energie uit een hoogspanningsbatterij die laag in de bodem van de auto geïntegreerd is. De batterij heeft 81,2 kWh bruikbare energie. De Combined Charging Unit van de auto maakt AC opladen mogelijk met een snelheid van 11 kW en optioneel 22 kW. Daarnaast is DC opladen mogelijk bij snellaadstations tot een snelheid van maximaal 205 kW. Dit betekent dat de actieradius van de BMW i5 xDrive40 Sedan in tien minuten met 156 kilometer kan worden vergroot. Plug & Charge maakt automatische authenticatie van de auto bij ondersteunende openbare laadpunten mogelijk. De actieradius van de nieuwe BMW i5 xDrive40 Sedan, zoals berekend in de WLTP-cyclus, bedraagt 467 — 538 kilometer.

Voor alle modelvarianten van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan zijn vanaf maart 2024 nieuwe exterieurkleuren beschikbaar. Het kleurenspectrum omvat nu ook BMW Individual Frozen Portimao Blau metallic en BMW Individual Malachite Green metallic. Tegelijkertijd zal de zakensedan ook worden aangeboden met uiterst exclusieve speciale BMW Individual Special Request exterieurkleuren. BMW Individual heeft ongeveer 150 opvallende kleuren (unilak, metallic en Frozen) ontwikkeld voor dit model. Alle speciale exterieurkleuren van BMW Individual onderscheiden zich door hun indrukwekkende kleurdiepte en uitzonderlijke glans. Klanten kunnen een overzicht van deze kleuren voor de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan openen met behulp van de BMW Individual Visualizer, die toegankelijk is via een link in de BMW Configurator op bmw.nl.

Daarnaast zijn er nieuwe interieurbekledingen voor de BMW 5 Serie Sedan beschikbaar vanaf productie maart 2024. De optionele comfortstoelen zijn nu ook te bestellen met BMW Individual Merino lederen bekleding in Dark Violet/Atlas Grau en in Taupe Grau/Atlas Grau.

Nieuwe instapvariant voor de BMW iX2; lancering van de BMW X2 xDrive20d.
Het huidige modeloffensief van BMW op het gebied van elektromobiliteit zorgt ook voor een breed en gevarieerd aanbod in het compacte premiumsegment. Een nieuwe instapvariant van de volledig elektrische BMW iX2 zal in maart 2024 in productie gaan. De nieuwe BMW iX2 eDrive20 (elektriciteitsverbruik, gecombineerd: 16,9 — 15,3 kWh/100 km in de WLTP-cyclus) aangedreven door een elektromotor op de vooras met 150 kW/204 pk, accelereert de iX2 eDrive20 in 8,6 seconden van 0 naar 100 km/u en heeft hij een range van 439 — 478 kilometer (in de WLTP-cyclus). De topsnelheid is elektronisch begrensd op 170 km//h. De hoogvoltage accu in de nieuwe BMW iX2 eDrive20 heeft een netto capaciteit van 64,8 kWh en kan worden opgeladen via driefase AC-opladen met standaard 11 kW en optioneel tot 22 kW. DC-snelladen is mogelijk tot 130 kW. Dankzij uiterst efficiënte laadsoftware en pre-conditioneren zijn korte laadstops voldoende om de acculading aanzienlijk te verhogen. In tien minuten DC snelladen kan de BMW iX2 eDrive20 zijn actieradius met 120 kilometer te vergroten.

Naast de nieuwe instapvariant van de BMW iX2 staat de nieuwe BMW X2 xDrive20d (brandstofverbruik gecombineerd: 5,2 — 4,8 liter/100 km CO2-uitstoot, gecombineerd: 137 — 125 g/km in de WLTP-cyclus). De tweede dieselvariant van de compacte SAC onderscheidt zich door een nog snellere vermogensafgifte en een nog grotere efficiëntie dankzij de milde hybride 48V-technologie. De 2,0-liter viercilindermotor is gekoppeld aan een elektromotor die geïntegreerd is in de zeventraps Steptronic-transmissie met dubbele koppeling. De motor dient als een door een krukas aangedreven startgenerator en kan zowel de belasting van de dieselmotor ontlasten als ermee samenwerken.

De aandrijflijn ontwikkelt een maximaal systeemvermogen van 120 kW/163 pk en een maximum koppel van 400 Nm dat via het intelligente BMW xDrive vierwielaandrijvingssysteem wordt verdeeld voor de beste grip onder alle omstandigheden. Hierdoor accelereert de BMW X2 xDrive20d in 8,6 seconden van 0 naar 100 km/u. De topsnelheid is 207 km/h.

Vanaf maart 2024 zijn alle modelvarianten van de nieuwe BMW X2 en de nieuwe BMW iX2 ook verkrijgbaar met de nieuwe exterieurkleuren Frozen Black en Frozen Pure Red.

BMW XM 50e: hoge prestaties met maximale efficiëntie.
De nieuwe BMW XM 50e (brandstofverbruik, gecombineerd: 1,7 — 1,3 liter/100 km) combineert kenmerkende M dynamiek, extravert design en vooruitstrevende luxe met maximale efficiëntie. De M HYBRID aandrijflijn bestaat uit een zescilinder-in-lijn benzinemotor en een elektromotor die is geïntegreerd in de Steptronic Sporttransmissie met acht versnellingen. Deze combinatie levert een systeemvermogen van 350 kW/476 pk (combinatie van de verbrandingsmotor met maximaal 230 kW/313 pk en de elektromotor met maximaal 145 kW/197 pk) en een maximaal systeemkoppel van 700 Nm.

De nieuwste versie van de 3,0-liter zescilinder-in-lijn verbrandingsmotor in de BMW XM 50e dankt zijn verbeterde prestaties onder andere verbeteringen aan de verbrandingscyclus, dubbele injectie, een in de cilinderkop geïntegreerd uitlaatspruitstuk en de variabele nokkenastiming VANOS, die nu volledig elektrisch wordt aangestuurd. De elektromotor heeft een door BMW gepatenteerde voorversnellingsfase, waardoor het effectieve koppel aan de transmissie-ingang voor de motor kortstondig kan worden verhoogd tot 450 Nm. De topsnelheid van het model — dat standaard is uitgerust met de M xDrive vierwielaandrijving — bedraagt een elektronisch begrensde snelheid van 250 km/u. Dankzij een elektrische actieradius van 78 — 83 kilometer volgens de WLTP-cyclus kan de BMW XM 50e een groot deel van zijn dagelijkse kilometers lokaal emissievrij afleggen in bijvoorbeeld stedelijke gebieden. En ook buiten de stadsgrenzen kan hij is volledig elektrisch rijden gemakkelijk mogelijk met snelheden tot 140 km/u.

Nieuwe digitale diensten, My BMW App met extra functies.
Een van de digitale diensten die vanaf het voorjaar van 2024 beschikbaar komt voor modellen met Operating System 9 is de Siri spraakassistent voor de Apple iPhone die rechtstreeks geactiveerd kan worden met een spraakopdracht, zonder dat de push-to-talk-knop ingedrukt hoeft te worden. Het cloudgebaseerde navigatiesysteem BMW Maps voor Operating System 9 biedt nu een verbeterde weergave van informatie over laadstations. De beschikbare afbeeldingen en beoordelingen worden zowel in de lijst met zoekresultaten als in de gedetailleerde weergave weergegeven. De beoordelingen van het laadstation worden nu duidelijk weergegeven op een schaal van nul tot vijf sterren.

Als ultieme reisgenoot biedt de My BMW App een steeds groter aantal functies. Vanaf het voorjaar van 2024 wordt Comfort Access met BMW Digital Key Plus geïntegreerd in de My BMW App in voertuigen die zijn uitgerust met het BMW-besturingssysteem 8, 8.5 of 9. Bovendien is de kaartweergave voor het selecteren van navigatiebestemmingen die in het voertuig zijn geïmporteerd, nieuw ontworpen. Dit verbetert ook de zoekfunctie en de zichtbaarheid van de meest relevante inhoud.

Ten slotte wordt de nieuwe functie voor e-mobiliteitsanalyse ook toegevoegd aan My Trips in de My BMW App. Op basis van het rijgedrag van de klant stelt deze functie het ideale BMW model voor met een volledig elektrisch aandrijfsysteem dat het meest geschikt is voor hen. Deze aanbevelingen zijn bedoeld om gebruikers van voertuigen met verbrandingsmotor te interesseren voor de overstap naar een elektrische auto.

Munich. Following the initial sales launch in South Korea, the new BMW 5 Series Sedan and the first BMW i5 Sedan are now coming to dealers in numerous other markets. In Germany, the first vehicles will be delivered to customers from 21 October 2023. The market launch also begins in the other European countries on the same day. One week later, on 28 October 2023, the new edition of the BMW 5 Series will make its road debut in the USA. The other global markets will follow on 25 November 2023.

The eighth generation of the world's most successful business sedan will also be offered for the first time as an all-electric BMW i5. Even before sales have begun, incoming orders show that this model variant in particular is meeting with high customer demand and will thus further accelerate the ramp-up of electric mobility pushed by BMW. Right from the start, customers can choose from two variants of the BMW i5. The new BMW i5 eDrive40 Sedan (power consumption combined: 18.9 - 15.9 kWh/100 km according to WLTP) features an output of up to 250 kW/340 hp and a range of 498 to 582 kilometres determined in the WLTP test cycle. The top model of the entire series is the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Sedan with up to 442 kW/601 hp (power consumption combined: 20.6 – 18.2 kWh/100 km according to WLTP).

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan emphasises its progressive character not only with the two all-electric model variants, but also with innovative digital services for in-car gaming, audio and video streaming, among other things, as well as with particularly high-grade driver assistance systems. The highlight in the field of systems for automated driving and parking is the Highway Assistant, which now also enables drivers in Germany to take their hands off the steering wheel for a longer period of time at speeds of up to 130 km/h and place them in a comfortable position, provided they continue to keep a close eye on the traffic situation and are able to take over from the system again at any time if necessary.

The intensive experience of semi-automated driving is complemented by the Automatic Lane Change. With this globally unique function, a glance in the exterior mirror is enough to trigger a lane change, which is then carried out automatically by the system.

The new generation of the BMW 5 Series Touring will celebrate its world premiere in spring 2024. The second body variant of the new BMW 5 Series will be available with the same range of drives as the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. This means that the new BMW 5 Series Touring is the first premium car of its kind to be offered with highly efficient combustion engines including 48-volt mild hybrid technology, plug-in hybrid systems and, for the first time, an all-electric drive. The unique combination of sporty elegance, modern functionality and locally emission-free driving pleasure is developed specifically for the automotive markets in Europe as well as in Japan and Taiwan.

Munich. The new features set to enhance the BMW model line-up from autumn 2023 centre on the latest advances in terms of digitalisation. The new BMW X1 and BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will both be equipped with the upgraded BMW iDrive featuring QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9 from November 2023. The BMW Digital Premium offering, with its highly customisable selection of online-based services, is also being introduced in both model series at the same time. Plus, extra digital services will be made available for a large number of current models via Remote Software Upgrade. Meanwhile, an extended range of functions will also add to the appeal of the My BMW App.

When it comes to automated driving systems, the highlight is without doubt the new Highway Assistant, which is also due to become available for models in the BMW 7 Series range from March 2024 following its premiere in the new 5 Series Sedan. Autumn 2023 will also bring additions to the choice of exterior colours and light-alloy wheels for selected models.

More intuitive and easier to use than ever: new BMW iDrive with QuickSelect.

From November 2023, the upgraded BMW iDrive with QuickSelect will be fitted as standard in all model variants of the new BMW X1, the all-electric BMW iX1 and the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, enabling numerous vehicle functions to be operated even more intuitively and easily. The latest incarnation of the display and control/operation system is based on BMW Operating System 9 and is packaged together with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

The new BMW iDrive features a redesigned home screen and the QuickSelect rapid-access tech, bringing an improved menu structure that takes its cue from consumer electronics devices. The new home screen displays the navigation system’s map view or other individually configurable graphics in the control display at all times. On the same level, function icons appear in a vertical arrangement on the driver’s side of the display. Drivers can switch between icons with a vertical swipe of the finger. The QuickSelect feature allows the function selected in this way to be activated directly without having to enter a submenu.

BMW Operating System 9 was developed in-house by the BMW Group and is based on an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack for the first time. It provides the basis for a broader offering of digital content that serves information and entertainment, shorter function update cycles and improved accessibility to a host of specific online services.

New BMW Digital Premium offering: customised selection of gaming, video & music streaming and other online services.

The new BMW Digital Premium offering will be brought out in Germany in November 2023 alongside the introduction of BMW Operating System 9. It will be available as an option for BMW X1, BMW iX1 and BMW 2 Series Active Tourer models and can be ordered from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store, which has now been expanded with the addition of further third-party apps. This means customers can enjoy in-car use of all the apps available in their country, e.g. for video and music streaming, news or gaming, as part of a package. In addition to this, BMW Digital Premium also includes enhanced navigation functions along with added customisation options thanks to extra My Modes, for instance.

As with all other ConnectedDrive Upgrades, BMW Digital Premium can be obtained from the ConnectedDrive Store either on the website, in the My BMW App or directly in the car. And, from November 2023, it will be even easier for customers to add ConnectedDrive Upgrades, as it will then be possible to not just select them directly from their vehicle, but to pay for them at the same time. In other words, instead of being redirected to the app or internet to complete their order, customers will be able to carry out the entire process, including payment, from the comfort of their car.

This new offering is designed to allow customers to put together a customised selection of digital services from the growing variety on offer – one that is perfectly suited to their personal requirements. BMW Digital Premium is available in Germany, for example, for €9.98 a month or from mid-2024 (provisionally) for an annual fee of €99 (both including VAT). The package also covers data usage for all digital services and the apps available from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store, including music and video streaming. Customers can take advantage of a free three-month trial period that will allow them to sample all the BMW Digital Premium services and content.

A new form of in-car gaming unique in the automotive sector is one of the highlights of BMW Digital Premium. BMW is presenting a wide selection of casual games that use a smartphone as the controller in collaboration with the AirConsole gaming platform. The games can be played in either solo or multiplayer mode when the vehicle is stationary as a way of passing the time while e.g. waiting for the high-voltage battery in the BMW iX1 or the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer plug-in hybrid models to recharge. About ten titles will initially be available to play, including racing, sport, quiz and skill games, and the range will continue to grow.

Besides audio streaming, BMW Digital Premium also lets the occupants enjoy a wide variety of video streaming services (powered by Xperi TiVo) on the control display while the car is stationary. This offers customers access to an ever-growing selection of aggregated video content, such as news and live or on-demand streaming of movies and series, for instance, along with country-specific content. Available with BMW Digital Premium in the USA, UK, South Korea, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, the Video App will feature, among other things, the Pluto, Bloomberg Television, Deutsche Welle, Al Jazeera and TED portals. In Germany, the package will additionally include the tagesschau news service app as well as the popular streaming service JOYN. Country-specific content will also be offered from the outset in Italy and the USA. The portfolio of video streaming platforms will keep evolving and will be gradually rolled out to other countries too.

Enhanced navigation functions, additional My Modes.

One of the key benefits of BMW Digital Premium is the enhanced functionality of the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps. For example, real-time traffic information (RTTI) with colour coding shows how freely traffic is flowing across the entire map area, even if route guidance is not activated. Other functions include 3D visualisation of buildings and surrounding elements in the map view and extended information on parking facilities. The driver is also proactively notified of the current traffic situation and estimated time of arrival when setting out to destinations they drive to regularly. If necessary, the system will even propose an alternative route. Turn-off instructions and lane recommendations are shown in realistic form in both the information display and the optional BMW Head-Up Display.

In Germany and other European countries, BMW Digital Premium offers the additional benefit of allowing drivers to pay parking fees directly from their vehicle in parking zones that support this payment method. And drivers in Germany also have the option of settling fuel bills digitally from their car after refuelling at participating filling stations. In both cases, payment is made using a credit card that is first registered with the partner company Parkopedia via the My BMW App.

In addition, BMW Digital Premium adds Expressive Mode, Relax Mode and Digital Art Mode to the choice of My Modes, opening up still greater scope for customising the driving experience. And it also brings new variants for both the Welcome Light sequence and the graphics visualising the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. 

Current Remote Software Upgrades for enhanced driving pleasure.

The Remote Software Upgrades bring existing digital functions right up to date. At the same time, new features and improvements to quality can also be imported into the car over the air. The latest in-car gaming and video-streaming services for BMW models will be made available in this way for the majority of vehicles with BMW Operating System 8.5 in autumn 2023.

Customers also receive notification of the Remote Software Upgrades in the My BMW App. Another option is for upgrades to be downloaded via the My BMW App and transferred to the vehicle before initiating the installation process there.

Extra functions for the My BMW App.

The My BMW App for smartphones provides customers with a direct link to their car and, depending on the vehicle configuration and country, offers them the benefit of numerous functions designed to make day-to-day mobility even more straightforward. This includes information transferred to the user’s smartphone on their vehicle’s status, servicing requirements, charging status and range, as well as remote access to functions for vehicle locating, locking and unlocking the doors, climate control and monitoring the car’s immediate vicinity. Charging-optimised routes can also be planned via the My BMW App and destination addresses sent from a smartphone to the vehicle’s navigation system. From autumn 2023, it will also be possible to enter mid-journey stops as part of the process.

And from March 2024, customers with compatible Android smartphones will also be able to use the My BMW App to operate the Remote Control Parking and Manoeuvre Assistant functions available with the optional Parking Assistant Professional and BMW Digital Key Plus. The My BMW App will also indicate the status of the alarm system on suitably equipped vehicles and show how it can be fully or partially activated.

New Highway Assistant also coming soon for the BMW 7 Series.

BMW has become the first carmaker to gain approval from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority for semi-automated driving at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph). As a result, the BMW Highway Assistant already available in the USA and Canada is now set to become an extremely innovative component of the optional Driving Assistant Professional package in Germany too. The new function lets the driver take their hands off the steering wheel and put them in a comfortable position while driving. First launched in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, it will also become available to use in the BMW 7 Series luxury sedan from spring 2024.

The BMW Highway Assistant can operate on multi-lane roads with structurally separated carriageways, with the function’s availability indicated to the driver in the information display. On suitably designated stretches of road, the driver is able to take their hands off the steering wheel for longer periods and position them comfortably, provided they continue to pay attention to what is happening on the road and are able to take over the steering again at any time. The Active Lane Change Assistant with eye confirmation included as part of the new BMW Highway Assistant adds another layer to the automated driving experience. As soon as the traffic situation permits, it is capable of performing the necessary steering movements for an overtaking manoeuvre, for example, and adjusting the vehicle’s speed as required. Plus, for the first time, the driver is able to initiate a lane change suggested by this system by simply looking in the exterior mirror to confirm it.

Additional exterior colour for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, new 21-inch light-alloy wheels for the 7 Series.

A new shade is already being added to the selection of exterior colours for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, just a short time after its launch. The Fire Red metallic paint finish will be made available for the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Sedan (electric power consumption combined: 20.6 – 18.2 kWh/100 km in the WLTP cycle) from November 2023, as well as for all other model variants of the new business sedan specified with the M Sport package.

A further highly exclusive design of light-alloy wheel will be added to the range of optional extras for the BMW 7 Series from November 2023. At the same time, 21-inch BMW Individual light-alloy wheels in multi-spoke design will also be available for all model variants of the luxury sedan. They have a bi-colour finish and are fitted with mixed-size tyres.

Just a few weeks after the market launch of the all-electric BMW i5 and the combustion engine variants equipped exclusively with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, two plug-in hybrid models will already be launched in November 2023. The BMW 530e Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 0.8 - 0.6 litres/100 km (62 miles); combined power consumption: 21.7 - 19.9 kWh/100 km (62 miles); combined CO₂ emissions: 17 - 13 g/km according to WLTP; data according to NEDC: -) The BMW 550e xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 1.0 - 0.8 litres/100 km (62 miles); combined power consumption: 23.2 - 21.6 kWh/100 km (62 miles); combined CO₂ emissions: 23 - 19 g/km according to WLTP; data according to NEDC: -) can be ordered as of now. In the eighth generation of the world's most successful business sedan, the plug-in hybrid models are characterised by extremely spontaneous power delivery, clearly increased efficiency and a significantly increased electric range. Both models feature the latest BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid systems, which is combined in the BMW 530e Sedan with a four-cylinder petrol engine and in the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan with an in-line six-cylinder petrol engine from the BMW Group's latest Efficient Dynamics modular generation.

Highly integrated drive unit with particularly high efficiency.
The electric motor, specially developed for the hybrid drive, is also integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission together with its power electronics. The highly integrated drive unit is particularly efficient and contributes up to 145 kW/197 hp (BMW 550e Sedan) or 135 kW/184 hp (BMW 530e Sedan) to the maximum system output of the two plug-in hybrid sedans.

In combination with the latest generation of BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid models, the 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder petrol engine in the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan generates a system output of up to 360 kW/489 hp and a maximum system torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft). The plug-in hybrid system puts its power to the road by means of BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. It sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62 miles) in 4.3 seconds. The maximum speed of the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan is electronically cut off at 250 km/h (155 mph). A maximum speed of 140 km/h (87 mph) is possible in purely electric operating mode.

The new BMW 530e Sedan has a 2.0-litre in-line four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and, together with the highly integrated e-drive unit, generates a maximum system output of 220 kW/299 hp. With a maximum system torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft), the new BMW 530e Sedan accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62 miles) in 6.3 seconds. The top speed is 230 km/h (143 mph), and up to 140 km/h (87 mph) in fully electric mode.

Increased range and high agility thanks to innovative BMW technologies.
A patented BMW innovation is used in the new plug-in hybrid models to increase the power development of the electric motor: The nominal torque of up to 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) is increased to a torque of up to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) by a pre-transmission, which is effectively applied to the engine-side transmission input. In this way, the compact electric motor generates additional drive torque that would otherwise only be possible with a larger electric motor. The additional torque is clearly noticeable both when accelerating and during intermediate sprints.

The electric range is now 83 to 90 kilometres (49 - 56 miles) according to WLTP for the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan and 93 to 103 kilometres (54 to 62 miles) according to WLTP for the new BMW 530e Sedan. Longer commutes are therefore also possible without producing any local emissions. Both plug-in hybrid models also owe their excellent electric range to their aerodynamic properties. As in all other variants of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, special panelling and air deflection elements contribute to an optimised underbody structure that minimises air resistance. Special attention was also paid to aerodynamically optimising the underbody, in order to additionally reduce CO₂ emissions and increase the electric range by up to ten kilometres.

When driving, the latest version of adaptive recuperation helps to recover electrical energy during overrun and braking phases. Thanks to intelligent networking, the drive control system can use navigation data and information from sensors of the driver assistance systems to adjust how much power is recuperated according to the respective traffic situation.

The space-saving arrangement of the lithium-ion high-voltage battery in the vehicle underbody has a positive effect on both the vehicle's centre of gravity and the luggage compartment. With a total of 520 litres, the storage volume of the plug-in hybrid models is just as large as that of the purely combustion engine powered variants. The high-voltage battery provides an increased usable energy content of up to 19.4 kWh. The maximum charging power has been doubled compared to the previous models and is now 7.4 kW, so that the high-voltage battery can be charged from zero to 100 percent of its capacity within 3 hours and 15 minutes. At a conventional household socket, the charging process is completed within 11 hour and 45 minutes.

Extensive range of standard equipment and equipment highlights.
Both the new BMW 530e Sedan and the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan feature an extended range of standard equipment compared to the models with 48-volt mild hybrid technology. In addition to 19-inch light alloy wheels, it also includes BMW IconicSounds Electric. In purely electric operating mode, this system provides a very special soundscape: Every movement of the accelerator pedal is accompanied by authentic acoustic feedback. The transparent and spherical sounds were developed in a cooperation between the BMW Group and the renowned film music composer Hans Zimmer.

The BMW 550e xDrive Sedan also comes as standard with Adaptive Chassis Professional, which includes electronically controlled shock absorbers and a lowered suspension as well as Integral Active Steering. It makes manoeuvring more comfortable, enhances agility at medium speeds and conveys confidence when changing lanes and cornering at higher speeds.

The BMW Interaction Bar combines modern functionality and fascinating design as part of the ambient lighting equipment. The strikingly backlit functional unit with crystalline surface structure extends across the entire width of the instrument panel far into the door panels and includes touch-sensitive control panels for controlling ventilation and air conditioning and for activating the hazard warning lights.

Electric, digital, circular – the focus areas of the BMW Group.

The BMW Group’s presence at IAA Mobility 2023 revolves around the company’s rigorous focus on electric, digital and circular mobility for the future and the latest progress it has made in these areas. The BMW Vision Neue Klasse is joined by a selection of new models from across the Group’s brands whose electrified powertrains, digital innovations and resource-efficient manufacturing illustrate the ongoing process of change in a variety of ways.

The new products poised for launch by the BMW brand include the plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 5 Series. The new BMW i7 Protection – the first ever all-electric protection vehicle in the luxury sedan segment – is also making its debut at IAA Mobility 2023.

MINI is unveiling the members of the brand’s new model family for the first time with the help of two world premieres: the new fully electric MINI Cooper and new fully electric MINI Countryman will both be on show at the Open Space site. A new model with all-electric drive also forms the centrepiece of BMW Motorrad’s line-up at Max-Joseph-Platz. Conceived as a compact eParkourer with a trailblazing design, the new BMW CE 02 injects fresh impetus into the urban mobility scene.

Locally emission-free mobility sets the theme for the models on show.

The IAA Mobility show will be officially opened on 5 September at Munich’s exhibition centre. The BMW Group will be represented at its stand in Hall A2, where the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will be unveiled to kick off the event. The BMW i7 Protection all-electric protection vehicle will also be presented for the first time at the IAA Mobility Summit.

The IAA Mobility Summit is taking place under the banner “Experience Connected Mobility” and is aimed primarily at trade visitors. It will showcase trends and technological innovations for future mobility over the course of numerous talks, presentations and panel discussions. One of the central topics is the use of hydrogen as an energy source for current and future vehicles. BMW is carrying out pioneering work in this field with its development and practical testing of a Sports Activity Vehicle with a hydrogen-powered fuel-cell drive system. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is also being exhibited at the Summit.

Locally emission-free mobility is also the dominant theme for the models awaiting visitors to the Open Space site. BMW has at least one purely electrically powered representative in all relevant model segments. The brand is presenting its entire line-up to the public, ranging from the BMW iX1 compact Sports Activity Vehicle via the BMW i4 and BMW i5 to the BMW iX and the BMW i7 luxury sedan.

The Open Space at Max-Joseph-Platz can be visited free of charge on 5 – 9 September from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday 10 September from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, BMW Welt will continue to provide an attractive destination for all automotive enthusiasts during IAA Mobility 2023. World premiere: the BMW Vision Neue Klasse.

At IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Group is offering visitors a preview of the Neue Klasse – the forthcoming generation of models from BMW. The BMW Vision Neue Klasse brings together innovations from the areas of electrification, digitalisation and circularity in signature BMW style. The Vision Vehicle takes design, control/operation, efficiency and sustainability into a whole new dimension – one that it will be possible to experience on the road before long.

During IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will be on show at both the Summit and the Open Space. The new Vision Vehicle incorporates the latest innovations in the BMW Group’s key future-focused fields. It therefore builds on the BMW i Vision Circular and the BMW i Vision Dee – which have already demonstrated the BMW Group’s development expertise in the areas of circular economy and digitalisation – and combines their qualities with further new developments in exterior and interior design, user experience and powertrain and battery technology.

World premiere: the plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan.

As well as the all-electric BMW i5, the brand is exhibiting two other model variants with electrified powertrains at IAA Mobility 2023. As early as spring 2024, two models featuring state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology will be added to the new BMW 5 Series Sedan range. Their six-cylinder and four-cylinder in-line petrol engines from the new modular generation of Efficient Dynamics units will each be combined with the latest BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid systems. This will result in a notable increase in output and much sharper power delivery, while also significantly improving efficiency and electric range compared to the outgoing model generation.

The electric motor purpose-developed for the new plug-in hybrid system is integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission together with its power electronics. The highly integrated drive unit contributes up to 145 kW/197 hp to the maximum combined output of 360 kW/489 hp in the case of the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 1.1 – 0.8 l/100 km [256.8 – 353.1 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 22.5 – 20.1 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 24 – 19 g/km in WLTP cycle, provisional figures) and 220 kW/299 hp for the new BMW 530e Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 0.8 – 0.6 l/100 km [353.1 – 470.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 21.4 – 18.9 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 19 – 14 g/km in WLTP cycle, provisional figures).

A BMW-patented innovation has been used to enhance the electric motor’s power delivery in the new plug-in hybrid models: a pre-gearing stage enables the nominal torque of 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) to be increased to effective torque of up to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) at the transmission input for the motor. The compact electric motor is therefore able to boost torque by an amount that would normally only be possible using a larger unit and makes a clear difference both when accelerating off the line and putting in a rapid burst of speed. Electric range is now up to 79 – 90 kilometres (49 – 56 miles) in the WLTP cycle for the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan and 87 – 101 kilometres (54 – 63 miles) in the WLTP cycle for the new BMW 530e Sedan.

The lithium-ion high-voltage battery’s space-saving positioning within the vehicle’s underbody has a beneficial effect on both the car’s centre of gravity and the capacity of its luggage compartment, which holds a total of 520 litres in the plug-in hybrid models – meaning it is just as large as that offered by their purely combustion-engined siblings. The usable energy provided by the high-voltage battery has climbed to 19.4 kWh. At the same time, maximum charging capacity has doubled compared to the outdoing models and now stands at 7.4 kW, enabling the high-voltage battery to be fully recharged from empty in 3.0 hours. When hooked up to a conventional domestic power socket, a full vehicle charge is completed in 9.8 hours.

World premiere: the BMW i7 Protection.

BMW is presenting a new generation of protection vehicles in the luxury sedan segment at the IAA Mobility 2023 show. The new BMW i7 Protection (electric power consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 30.0 kWh/100 km, provisional figure) is absolutely unique in this segment, as it is the world’s first ever certified protection sedan with an all-electric drive system. Driven by two powerful electric motors, it meets all the requirements of class VR9 protection without any limitations, as does the new V8-engined BMW 7 Series Protection (fuel consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 14.6 l/100 km [19.3 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions: 328 g/km, provisional figures).

Both models blend the integrated protection concept channelled into the development of the new BMW 7 Series range with outstanding levels of ride comfort and spaciousness, advanced equipment features and the unbeatable dynamic prowess for which BMW is renowned. The concept centres around the new and unique BMW Protection Core, which forms a self-supporting body structure made from armour steel. This is then combined with features such as additional armouring for the underbody and roof, plus armoured glass. The result is customised protection from attacks with firearms or explosives for at-risk individuals. The glass in the new protection vehicles even meets the requirements for the highest class of civilian protection, VPAM 10.

The all-electric BMW i7 Protection is equipped with one electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear. Together they generate a combined output of 400 kW/544 hp and maximum combined torque of 745 Nm (549 lb-ft), and create an electric all-wheel-drive system. The new BMW i7 Protection sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in 9.0 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 160 km/h (99 mph). The instantaneous, precisely orchestrated power delivery from the two motors guarantees exceptional traction and directional stability even when the car is being driven hard and performing challenging manoeuvres, such as when escaping from an attack.

Tuned and optimised specifically for this model, the chassis technology also makes allowance for the additional weight of its armouring, resulting in superbly assured performance in any situation. Another unique offering for this segment is the inclusion of Integral Active Steering as standard. This reduces the car’s turning circle, increases agility when cornering at speed and improves driving comfort for rear-seat passengers. The 20-inch light-alloy wheels are a further standout feature. The PAX tyres that also come as standard allow the car to continue its journey at up to 80 km/h (50 mph) even in the event of a total loss of pressure.

The latest generation of BMW iDrive based on BMW Operating System 8.5 is fitted, complete with the BMW Curved Display. The system is intuitive to use and operates in a way familiar to BMW drivers. The special functions relevant to occupant protection are also operated via BMW iDrive. The new protection vehicles can also be tailored precisely to any purpose, with items including a fresh-air supply system, a fire extinguishing system, flashing lights, radio transceivers and flag poles for when the car is on official duty, plus other special customer-specific options.

Trailblazing: the BMW iX5 Hydrogen.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen presented at IAA Mobility 2023 provides further evidence of the company’s superlative innovative strength in the field of drive technology. A pilot series of the Sports Activity Vehicle with hydrogen fuel-cell drive, developed on the basis of the current BMW X5, has entered service for demonstration and test purposes with various target groups around the world. This allows selected test groups who haven’t been involved in the development process to get behind the wheel of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen and gain a direct impression of its attributes for the first time.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is equipped with the latest, fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology. The highly integrated drive unit at the rear axle draws its energy from a high-performance battery with li-ion technology that was specially developed for the hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle and generates maximum output of 295 kW/401 hp. The electric motor also doubles as a generator that feeds energy back into the high-performance battery on the overrun or under braking.

The model’s two 700-bar tanks made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) together hold six kilograms of gaseous hydrogen and can be refilled in three to four minutes. A chemical reaction takes place in the fuel cell system between the hydrogen and oxygen from the air, through which the electric power for the electric motor is generated. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen achieves a range of 504 kilometres (313 miles) in the WLTP cycle without having to refill the tanks. The hydrogen-powered SAV completes the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in under six seconds and goes on to reach a top speed in excess of 180 km/h (112 mph).

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen combines long-distance capabilities and short refuelling stops with zero tailpipe emissions and hallmark BMW driving dynamics. Its hydrogen fuel-cell technology has the potential – provided the necessary basic conditions are in place – to serve as an additional pillar in the BMW Group’s future powertrain portfolio. As part of its ongoing transformation, the BMW Group is following an approach that embraces all technologies when it comes to drive systems. The company is therefore readying itself for differing customer requirements, infrastructure standards and political and regulatory frameworks in the various regions of the world. This degree of flexibility puts the BMW Group in a position to react quickly to changing requirements in the markets in any situation and to present as many customers as possible with an appropriate model offering at all times.

Dingolfing. De productie van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie, inclusief de volledig elektrisch aangedreven BMW i5, is vandaag van start gegaan in de BMW Group fabriek in Dingolfing. Dat gebeurde in aanwezigheid van de Beierse Minister-President Markus Söder. De productielocatie in Beieren viert in 2023 zijn 50-jarig bestaan. Een mijlpaal die tevens in het teken staat van elektrische mobiliteit. De nieuwe BMW i5 is namelijk al het derde volledig elektrische model in twee jaar tijd dat hier, in navolging van de BMW iX en BMW i7, van de band rolt. In de grootste Europese fabriek van BMW Group zal volgend jaar 40% van de totale productie voor rekening komen van de elektrische modellen.

Milan Nedeljković, die als lid van de Raad van Bestuur bij BMW AG verantwoordelijk is voor Productie, zei vandaag bij de productiestart in Dingolfing: “De BMW i5 en onze fabriek in Dingolfing zijn samen een perfect voorbeeld van de manier waarop BMW Group zichzelf transformeert richting elektrische mobiliteit en hoe onze productiefaciliteiten op weg zijn naar de BMW iFACTORY. E-mobility wordt het nieuwe normaal in onze fabrieken wereldwijd. Tussen 2021 en 2024 zullen wij in totaal 15 elektrische modellen in ons wereldwijde productienetwerk hebben geïntegreerd.”

Om dit te bereiken zet BMW Group in op platforms met een flexibele architectuur om een breed portfolio aan aandrijflijnen binnen de modellijnen te kunnen aanbieden. De BMW 5 Serie is, net als de BMW 7 Serie en de BMW X1, verkrijgbaar met een volledig elektrische aandrijflijn, met verbrandingsmotoren en als plug-in hybride. Dit vraagt om een hoge mate van flexibiliteit in de basisstructuur van de modellen, maar het biedt BMW Group tegelijk ook de mogelijkheid om de productiecapaciteit in zijn fabrieken efficiënt te benutten en de productie aan te passen aan de vraag. Nedeljković: “We volgen de markt. De vraag van de klant bepaalt de mix van de verschillende aandrijflijnen.” Dit is allemaal mogelijk door grote investeringen in het productienetwerk. BMW Group heeft meer dan een miljard euro geïnvesteerd voor de integratie van de BMW iX, BMW 7 Serie en BMW 5 Serie in de fabriek in Dingolfing.

BMW 5 Serie core business voor Dingolfing.
In de komende vijf jaar zal de introductie van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie voor een stevige productiegroei zorgen, verwacht Christoph Schröder, Plant Director in Dingolfing: “De BMW 5 Serie vormt van oudsher de kern van de productie en zal wederom van grote waarde blijken voor ons productievolume.” In 2022 zijn meer 280.000 modellen van de 5 Serie van de band gerold. In het komende jaar verwacht Schröder, mede dankzij de productiestart van de BMW 5 Serie Touring en de achtste generatie BMW M5 modellen, dat dat aantal de 300.000 zal passeren. Stefan Danner, vicevoorzitter van de ondernemingsraad in Dingolfing, vult aan: “Samen met de succesvolle transitie naar e-mobility speelt de BMW 5 Serie een centrale rol voor de maximale capaciteitsbenutting van onze fabriek en daarmee voor het behoud van werkgelegenheid."

50 jaar BMW productie in Dingolfing.
Van de grofweg 12 miljoen geproduceerde BMW modellen in Dingolfing in vijftig jaar tijd is de BMW 5 Serie goed voor een totaal aantal van 8 miljoen, dus voor twee derde van de productie. Exact 50 jaar geleden, in september 1973, rolde de eerste BMW hier van de productielijn, een BMW 520i van de eerste modelgeneratie in de kleur Tangerine. Sindsdien is de Beierse fabriek uitgegroeid tot een van de meest belangrijke en prominente productielocaties binnen de auto-industrie, en bovendien een economische motor voor de regio. De jaarlijkse salariskosten van de 18.000 BMW medewerkers in Dingolfing bedragen meer dan een miljard euro en de fabriek heeft contracten met zo’n 1.000 toeleverende bedrijven in Beieren. Bovenop de huidige investeringen in de fabriek in Dingolfing heeft BMW sinds 2015 al meer dan een miljard euro gestopt in de productie van componenten voor elektrische aandrijflijnen.

De visionaire BMW iFACTORY.
Net als het besluit tot de bouw van de fabriek in Dingolfing gedurende de oliecrisis begin jaren zeventig is de ondernemende visie van BMW Group ook vandaag de dag nog duidelijk waarneembaar in deze productielocatie. Door forse investeringen is de fabriek in Dingolfing uitermate goed uitgerust voor de toekomst en de transitie naar de BMW iFACTORY is tastbaar. Het beste voorbeeld voor deze ontwikkeling is het winnen van de gerenommeerde Automotive Lean Production Award in 2022 in de categorieën ‘lean’ en ‘digital’. De prijs van de Technology Assembly is toegekend voor de uitrol van intelligente camerasystemen voor kwaliteitsmonitoring (AIQX), en voor slimme logistieke oplossingen en het IT-platform IPS-i voor de identificatie en lokalisatie van objecten. Afgelopen jaar is in de fabriek ook een pilot gestart met Automated Driving In-Plant (AFW), waarmee de nieuwe BMW 7 Serie volledig autonoom van de assemblagehal naar de ruimte voor de eindcontrole rijdt. Dit systeem wordt nu op grotere schaal uitgerold voor de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie.

Op het vlak van duurzaamheid – het groene aspect van de BMW iFACTORY – zijn in deze fabriek in recente jaren de nodige activiteiten ontplooid: van het promoten van biodiversiteit op het fabrieksterrein tot aan het voorkomen en recyclen van afval. Per geproduceerd voertuig blijft er slechts 600 gram afval over. Ook zijn maatregelen genomen om de uitstoot van CO_2­ te verminderen. In navolging van de inkoop van groene stroom is voor de fabriek een verregaande overeenkomst gesloten voor de levering van regionaal geproduceerd biogas voor verwarmingsdoeleinden. Deze bron van energie zal binnen een jaar of twee voorzien in ongeveer de helft van het benodigde warme water in de fabriek, wat goed is voor een CO₂-reductie van tussen de 10 en 15%.

Belangrijke stappen voor de toekomst.
Nedeljković ziet de recente investeringen in de transformatie van Dingolfing en andere Beierse fabrieken als een stevige impuls van BMW Group in Beieren als productielocatie: “Negen van de tien geproduceerde BMW modellen worden vandaag de dag verkocht aan klanten buiten Duitsland. Ondanks dat is meer dan de helft van onze medewerkers hier, met name in Beieren, werkzaam en ondanks alle benodigde internationalisatie voor uitgebalanceerde wereldwijde groei blijft Beieren een belangrijke pijler voor BMW Group en zijn productienetwerk.”

Rijswijk. Dynamischer dan ooit, een veelvoud aan digitale innovaties en voor het eerst met volledig elektrische aandrijving – dat is de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan. Als BMW i5 neemt de nieuwste generatie van de meest succesvolle zakensedan ter wereld de leiding op weg naar duurzame premium mobiliteit in het hogere middensegment. Elektrificatie, een geavanceerde BMW iDrive Curved Display met ‘QuickSelect’, nieuwe digitale services en meer duurzaamheid in de gehele productlevenscyclus zijn de toekomstgerichte kenmerken die een grote rol spelen in de huidige transformatie van BMW Group.

Naast volledig elektrische variant, de BMW i5, komen er ook plug-in hybride modellen en zeer efficiënte benzine- en dieselmotoren met 48-volt Mild Hybrid technologie. Net als de voorgaande modelgeneraties vindt de productie van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan plaats in de BMW Group fabriek Dingolfing, waar ook de elektromotoren en hoogvoltage-accu’s voor de BMW i5 worden geproduceerd. De Nederlandse marktintroductie van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan is in oktober 2023. De nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan zal beschikbaar zijn vanaf een consumentenadviesprijs van € 65.379,- als BMW 520i Sedan. De volledig elektrische BMW i5 zal een consumentenadviesprijs hebben vanaf € 77.572,- in de vorm van de BMW i5 eDrive40. De volledig elektrische M Performance variant BMW i5 M60 xDrive zal beschikbaar zijn voor een consumentenadvies prijs vanaf € 108.427,-.

Sportieve elegantie en opvallende uitstraling met een nieuwe designtaal.
Een heldere en minimalistische designtaal benadrukt de sportieve elegantie en uitstraling van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan. Ten opzichte van het voorgaande model is de nieuwe generatie 97 mm langer geworden, met een lengte van 5.060 mm in totaal. De breedte nam met 32 mm toe tot 1.900 mm en de hoogte met 36 mm tot 1.515 mm. De wielbasis is met 20 mm toegenomen en meet nu 2.995 mm.

De voorzijde van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan valt op door een moderne interpretatie van de kenmerkende dubbele koplampen en de BMW nierengrille. Bijna verticaal geplaatste LED elementen doen dienst als richtingaanwijzers en dagrijverlichting. De BMW nierengrille zorgt voor een breed aanzicht en is optioneel ook te voorzien van BMW ‘Iconic Glow’ nierengrilleverlichting.

Het atletische zijaanzicht wordt bepaald door een hoge schouderlijn, krachtige oppervlakken en twee nauwkeurig geplaatste karakterlijnen. De zwarte dorpelverbreders, verzonken portiergrepen en het nummer 5 in reliëf onderaan de C-stijl zijn echte blikvangers. De dynamische en langgerekte proporties komen samen in een krachtige achterzijde. Een chromen strip scheidt de horizontale achterlichten, die opvallen door een nieuwe, expressieve interpretatie van de kenmerkende L-vorm.

Om het dynamische karakter van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan verder te versterken zijn er het optionele M Sportpakket en het M Sportpakket Pro. Het kleurenpallet bij de introductie is reeds beschikbaar met drie BMW Individual carrosseriekleuren.

Rijplezier en reiscomfort in combinatie met innovatieve flair.
De nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan biedt een ideale combinatie van BMW typerend rijplezier en een hoge mate van comfort op lange reizen. Genereuze ruimte, moderne functionaliteiten en een uitstekende geluidsisolatie voor akoestisch comfort komen samen met hoogwaardige en zorgvuldig bewerkte materialen, verfijnd vakmanschap en geavanceerde digitale services.

Het aantal knoppen in de cockpit van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie is aanzienlijk verminderd ten opzichte van het uitgaande model. Dat is te danken aan het verder digitaliseren van functies. Het BMW Curved Display is een nieuwe interpretatie van de voor BMW typerende focus om de cockpit op de bestuurder te richten. Het volledig digitale display bestaat uit een 12,3 inch Information Display en een 14,9 inch Touch Control Display.

Het nieuw ontworpen stuurwiel heeft een afgeplatte onderzijde en biedt haptische feedback voor de bedieningselementen. Daarnaast is ook de transmissiehendel volledig nieuw ontworpen. De BMW Interaction Bar - standaard op de elektrische varianten van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan - is een ander highlight. Deze is van binnenuit verlicht en heeft een kristalachtige oppervlaktestructuur. De BMW Interaction Bar strekt zich uit over het gehele dashboard tot in de portieren en is voorzien van aanrakingsgevoelige bedieningspanelen.

Een primeur bij BMW: volledig vegan interieur.
Nieuw ontworpen sportstoelen behoren tot de standaarduitrusting. De optionele comfortstoelen bieden een brede keuze aan elektrisch bedienbare instellingsmogelijkheden. De nieuwe
BMW 5 Serie Sedan is bovendien het eerste model van BMW met standaard een volledig vegan interieur. Naast dat de stoelen, het dashboard en de deurpanelen met het duurzame materiaal ‘Veganza’ zijn bekleed, is ook voor het eerst het stuurwiel hiermee uitgevoerd. De ‘Veganza’ bekleding met lederachtige eigenschappen is optioneel leverbaar in meerdere kleuren en met decoratieve stiksels. Ook optioneel leverbaar is BMW Individual Merino lederen bekleding in verschillende bicolor varianten.

Volledig elektrische BMW i5 M60 xDrive als topmodel.
De volledig elektrische BMW i5 is voorzien van de aanzienlijk verbeterde, vijfde generatie BMW eDrive technologie en leverbaar in twee varianten. De BMW i5 M60 xDrive combineert een 442 kW (601 pk) sterke aandrijving met typerende M prestaties en specifieke designkenmerken. Twee geïntegreerde aandrijfunits op de voor- en achteras zorgen voor volledig elektrische vierwielaandrijving. Het systeemkoppel bedraagt tot 820 Nm met ingeschakelde M Sport Boost of M Launch Control functie. Daarmee accelereert de BMW i5 M60 in 3,8 seconden van 0 naar 100 km/h. De topsnelheid is elektronisch begrensd op 230 km/h.

Bij de andere variant, de BMW i5 eDrive40 drijft een elektromotor de achterwielen aan en levert een maximaal vermogen van 250 kW (340 pk) en een maximaal koppel van 430 Nm met Sport Boost of Launch Control functie. De BMW i5 eDrive40 accelereert van 0 naar 100 km/h in 6,0 seconden en de topsnelheid bedraagt 193 km/h.

De hoogvoltage-accu bevindt zich in de bodemplaat van de BMW i5 en heeft een bruikbare netto capaciteit van 81,2 kWh. Samen met de efficiënte elektromotoren, de nieuwste versie van adaptieve regeneratie en een slimme toepassing van warmtepomptechnologie voor het verwarmen en koelen van het interieur zorgt dat voor een grote actieradius. De BMW i5 M60 xDrive heeft een WLTP actieradius van 455–516 km en de BMW i5 eDrive40 een WLTP actieradius van 477–582 km. Met de nieuwe MAX RANGE functie kan de actieradius met tot 25 procent worden vergroot door het vermogen en de topsnelheid te beperken en comfortfuncties uit te schakelen.

Innovatieve charging oplossingen van BMW Charging.
De Combined Charging Unit (CCU) van de BMW i5 eDrive40 maakt AC-laden met tot 11 kW mogelijk, met 22 kW als optie (standaard op BMW i5 M60 xDrive). De hoogvoltage-accu is met een DC-lader op te laden met tot 205 kW. Daarmee is de accu van de BMW i5 bijvoorbeeld van 10 tot 80 procent op te laden in zo’n 30 minuten.

De BMW i5 modellen zijn ook de eerste modellen van het merk die geschikt zijn voor de Plug & Charge functie. Daarmee kan de BMW zich zelfstandig aanmelden bij geschikte openbare laadstations, zonder gebruik van een app of laadpas. Uniek is de Multi Contract Option, die het mogelijk maakt om tot vijf verschillende individuele Plug & Charge contracten van verschillende aanbieders digitaal in de BMW op te slaan.

Nieuwe benzine- en dieselmotoren met 48-volt mild hybrid technologie.
Naast de volledig elektrische BMW i5 en de Plug-in Hybride modellen komen er ook benzine- en dieselmotoren van de nieuwe, modulaire generatie BMW Group Efficient Dynamics motoren beschikbaar. Deze zijn alle voorzien van 48-volt Mild Hybrid technologie en standaard gekoppeld aan een nieuwe 8-traps Steptronic Sport transmissie.

Het Nederlandse aanbod bestaat uit de viercilinder BMW 520i Sedan met 158 kW (208 pk), de BMW 520d Sedan en de BMW 520d xDrive Sedan met ieder 145 kW (197 pk). Aan het einde van dit jaar wordt het aanbod verder uitgebreid met twee Plug-in Hybride modellen van de nieuwste generatie. Ook komt in 2024 een nieuwe zes-in-lijn dieselmotor beschikbaar, net als een derde variant van de volledig elektrische BMW i5 met vierwielaandrijving.

Unieke balans tussen rijdynamiek en reiscomfort.
De BMW 5 Serie Sedan staat bekend om zijn balans tussen maximale sportiviteit en een hoge mate aan reiscomfort op lange afstanden. Bij de nieuwe generatie is deze balans nog eens verbeterd. Dat is te danken aan de langste wielbasis in dit segment, de toegenomen spoorbreedte en een bijna perfecte 50/50 gewichtsverdeling. Een intelligente lichtgewicht constructie en een toegenomen stijfheid van onderstel en carrosserie dragen eveneens bij aan de dynamische en comfortabele rijeigenschappen.

De zeer geavanceerde ondersteltechnologie is modelspecifiek aangepast op de verschillende aandrijftechnologieën. Direct aangestuurde tractiecontrole, een geïntegreerd remsysteem en Variable Sport Steering behoren tot de standaarduitrusting. Optioneel leverbaar zijn een M Sportonderstel, M Sportremsysteem en het Adaptieve Onderstel Professional (standaard voor BMW i5 M60 xDrive) met elektronisch aangestuurde schokdempers, Integral Active Steering en een nieuw dynamiekmanagement. Het optionele Adaptieve M Onderstel Professional omvat bovendien Active Roll Stabilisation met Active Roll Comfort. Lichtmetalen wielen in 18-inch of 19-inch (afhankelijk van de motorisatie) zijn standaard. Optioneel leverbaar is dit uit te breiden tot lichtmetalen wielen van 21-inch.

Intense, geautomatiseerde rijbeleving: nieuwe Highway Assistant, unieke Active Lane Change Assistant.
Het aantal standaard of optioneel leverbare systemen voor geautomatiseerd rijden en parkeren is voor de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan aanzienlijk uitgebreid. Een innovatief technologiepakket legt de basis voor een uitstekende werking van deze systemen.

Het hoogtepunt van het aanbod is de optionele Driving Assistant Professional met Steering and Lane Control Assist en Distance Control met Stop & Go functie. In enkele markten als de Verenigde Staten, Canada en Duitsland is ook de Highway Assistant daarbovenop beschikbaar (niet in de Nederlandse markt), die het sturen volledig kan overnemen op snelwegen met gescheiden rijbanen. Bij snelheden tot 130 km/h is het mogelijk om de handen van het stuur te halen. De bestuurder moet wel op de weg blijven letten en indien nodig kunnen ingrijpen. Een wereldprimeur: het systeem omvat de Active Lane Change Assistant met ‘oogbediening’. Daarmee bereikt de interactie tussen bestuurder en de auto een nieuw niveau. De BMW stelt voor om van rijstrook te wisselen indien de verkeerssituatie dit nodig maakt en voor het eerst is het voor de bestuurder voldoende om in de buitenspiegel te kijken om de manoeuvre te bevestigen alsmede te activeren. De Active Lane Change Assistant neemt automatisch de besturing over, zolang de verkeerssituatie dat toelaat.

De nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan is standaard uitgerust met de Parking Assistant inclusief achteruitrijassistent. Met de optionele Parking Assistant Professional is het mogelijk om manoeuvres tot 200 meter automatisch uit te voeren vanuit de BMW of op afstand via de smartphone.

Intuïtieve bediening en nieuwe digitale belevingen: BMW iDrive met ‘QuickSelect’ en BMW Operating System 8.5.
Het verder ontwikkelde BMW iDrive systeem met ‘QuickSelect’ draagt bij aan de kenmerkende rij- en reisbeleving in de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan. Het systeem is gebaseerd op het BMW Operating System 8.5 en voorzien van een nieuw ontworpen ‘home’ scherm met verticaal geplaatste functietoetsen aan de bestuurderskant. ‘QuickSelect’ maakt het mogelijk om functies snel te bedienen, zonder naar een submenu te moeten wisselen. Hiermee heeft het systeem een verbeterde menustructuur, dat sterk lijkt op dat van smartphones en tablets.

Het nieuwe BMW iDrive functioneert samen met het BMW Curved Display en de BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Het systeem is ontworpen om de bediening via aanraking en natuurlijke spraak te optimaliseren. Bovendien is de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan voorzien van de kenmerkende iDrive controller op de middenconsole. De optionele BMW Live Cockpit Professional omvat het BMW Head-Up Display en Augmented View met weergave op het Control Display of het instrumentenpaneel. Optioneel is BMW Natural Interaction voor het bedienen van functies door middel van gebaren.

In-car gaming debuteert in de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan.
BMW Operation System 8.5 biedt bovendien nog meer digitale content voor informatie of entertainment, snellere updates voor functies, verbeterde informatie over laadstations voor geëlektrificeerde modellen en een geoptimaliseerde toegang tot vele online services. Videostreaming is mogelijk via het Control Display, evenals een innovatieve vorm van in-car gaming. Dat is in de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan voor het eerst mogelijk via het AirConsole platform. Bestuurder en passagiers kunnen daardoor games spelen of video’s streamen terwijl de BMW stil staat, bijvoorbeeld tijdens de wachttijd van een laadsessie.

Een andere innovatie is het Welcome Scenario, met lichtshow en persoonlijke ontvangst. Optioneel omvat dit ook het dynamische Light Carpet (lichttapijt). De BMW Digital Key Plus is nu beschikbaar voor smartphones met iOS of Android besturingssystemen en voor de Apple Watch. Met de standaard 5G antennes biedt de nieuwe zakensedan optimale connectiviteit en telefoonverbinding. De Personal eSIM zorgt ervoor dat de BMW volledig is te integreren in de digitale wereld van de bestuurder. In geselecteerde markten waaronder Nederland is het ook mogelijk om vanuit de BMW automatisch te betalen voor parkeren.

De nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan biedt een keuze uit maximaal zes ‘My Modes’ om de rijbeleving te versterken en nog meeslepender te maken. De standaarduitrusting omvat ook geoptimaliseerde smartphone integratie via Apple CarPay^® en Android Auto^™. Met de functie Remote Software Upgrades is de BMW altijd up-to-date met de nieuwste software.

De marktintroductie van de nieuwe BMW 5 Serie Sedan betekent tevens het begin van een nieuw hoofdstuk op het gebied van customer service. Met Proactive Car creëert BMW een nieuw platform voor onderhoud aan de BMW. Munich. The series production development process for the first-ever BMW i5 is entering the home straight with the fine-tuning of its suspension control and driver assistance systems. Just a few weeks ahead of the car’s world premiere, it is clear the all-electric version of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan will deliver an outstanding driving experience – just like all the other variants. Innovative Vertical Dynamics Management elevates the balance of sporting potency and ride comfort for which the BMW 5 Series has always been renowned to an even higher level. And the car’s automated driving capability has also been taken into a new dimension with the Highway Assistant, which controls the distance to the vehicle ahead, carries out steering adjustments and carries out lane changes for the first time by means of eye activation.

Over the course of more than a year, the BMW i5 has negotiated a richly varied programme of testing – from the snow-covered and icy surfaces of the winter test centre at Arjeplog, Sweden to regions offering extreme heat and dry conditions, in city driving and on country roads, on motorways and hand-picked test tracks. The fine-tuning work for all the components involved in the driving experience was then carried out at the BMW Group’s proving grounds outside Miramas in southern France. This included ensuring the integral heating and cooling circuit with heat pump function for the drive system, the high-voltage battery and the interior of the BMW i5 can be controlled as required at all times. The predictive heat management capability of the high-voltage battery paves the way for rapid and efficient charging at DC fast-charging stations.

Specially tuned suspension systems maximise comfort and agility.

The flexible drive system technology offered by the new BMW 5 Series range – which now gives customers the choice between classical internal combustion engines, plug-in-hybrid solutions and fully electric drive systems – leads to wide variations in vehicle weight. With this in mind, model-specific, case-by-case chassis tuning and corresponding application of all control systems deliver signature BMW driving pleasure, regardless of the drive concept involved.

As the range-topping model variant, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive (electric power consumption combined: 21.2 – 17.9 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km in the WLTP cycle [provisional figures]) is fitted as standard with Adaptive Suspension Professional including electronically controlled dampers. This suspension system can also be specified as an option for the BMW i5 eDrive40 (electric power consumption combined: 19.7 – 16.0 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km in the WLTP cycle [provisional figures]). Thanks to an innovative form of BMW Vertical Dynamics Management, it offers a noticeable increase in sports performance combined with a level of ride comfort that also represents a clear step forward from that of its predecessor.

The latest version of BMW’s Vertical Dynamics Management, now in its ninth generation, is making its debut in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. This technology is based on a newly developed, extensively networked control logic, and factors in all the available input variables – such as wheel speeds, steering angle, yaw rate and acceleration – to establish the ideal damping forces. The system no longer calculates the required damping forces using mathematical models, but instead favours physical calculation of data on the current driving condition. This ensures clearly defined body control and precise suspension response in every driving situation. 

Adaptive Suspension Professional is offered for all variants of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan (either as standard or optionally, depending on the model), ensuring the customary driving pleasure of BMW. The new generation of the business sedan therefore blends ride comfort approaching BMW 7 Series levels with the sporting agility familiar from the BMW 3 Series.

A new experience of automated driving: Highway Assistant and automated lane change with eye activation.

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan also raises the bar in its segment with its extensive array of systems for automated driving and parking. High-resolution cameras, high-precision radar sensors and control units from the BMW Group’s latest technology toolkit, plus a software application refined over countless miles of testing, provide the ingredients for an automated driving experience featuring innovative highlights that further enhance safety and comfort.

In the USA and Canada, and now also in Germany, the Driving Assistant Professional available as an option for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan comprises Highway Assistant, which can be used at speeds of up to 130 km/h (81 mph). Once activated, the system takes care of distance control and the steering inputs required for lane control, so the driver can keep their hands in a comfortable position and focus fully on surveying the area around the vehicle and the traffic situation at hand.

An interior camera helps monitor the driver’s level of alertness and also enables another innovation: in a world first, the automated lane change – included as part of the Driving Assistant Professional and Highway Assistant – in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan can be controlled using eye activation. This convenience feature results in a new level of interaction between human and car. Looking in the exterior mirror prompts the car to initiate the lane change process and carry out the necessary steering movements and speed adjustments at speeds of up to 130 km/h (81 mph) once the driver has confirmed they want it to do so and the traffic situation allows. The purely visual gesture complements the previous use of the turn signal lever, which is also available as an alternative.

Production of the new, eighth-generation BMW 5 Series Sedan will begin in summer 2023 at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in Bavaria. The car’s market launch will get underway in October 2023.

Munich. The first-ever BMW 5 Series with a fully electric drive system has yet to make its global debut, but it has already come through the ultimate endurance test. The new BMW i5 repeatedly demonstrated both the stability of its electric powertrain and its dynamic performance qualities over the course of arduous test drives in wintry conditions. The programme of testing on ice and snow lasted about a year in all, from the initial test runs to the final stages of fine-tuning. During the extensive testing on country roads, motorways and specially prepared test tracks, the development engineers mainly focused their attention on the car’s ability to drive at low temperatures and on surfaces offering little grip.

The innovative powertrain and chassis control systems on board the new BMW i5 do a great deal to optimise its traction, dynamism and driving stability, and nowhere is this more apparent than on a solid blanket of snow, icy mountain roads or frozen lakes. It was only right that the dynamic winter testing of the purely electrically powered sedan recently finished exactly where it began: in the biting cold of the BMW Group’s winter test centre at Arjeplog, northern Sweden.

Endurance test for BMW eDrive technology, operating continuously at extreme sub-zero temperatures.

As part of the production development process, the new BMW i5 first had to prove its mettle back in February 2022, when it completed a road trip from Munich to the BMW test centre at Arjeplog. A prototype model of the all-electric BMW 5 Series fully camouflaged with a special wrap, plastic attachments, grilles and provisional headlights and rear lights set off on a five-day test drive from the foothills of the Bavarian Alps up to Denmark, then on to the edge of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland.

The journey of around 3,000 kilometres (1,850 miles) provided an early opportunity for the motors, power electronics, high-voltage battery and integrated heating and cooling system for the cabin and battery pack to demonstrate their advanced level of readiness on a long-distance journey. Featuring cutting-edge battery cell technology and intelligently controlled thermal management, the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology – further upgraded for the new BMW i5 – forms the basis for long ranges and short charging times during breaks in the journey, even in extreme sub-zero ambient temperatures.

The final destination of Arjeplog provided the team of development and test engineers with the ideal venue for their test programme. The snow-covered roads and frozen lakes of northern Sweden, with their vast expanses of ice, create the perfect setting for exploring how the chassis components, steering and braking systems, and driving dynamic and driving stability systems all interact with one another in extreme outdoor conditions. As a result, the groundwork for the authoritative, assured and characteristically sporty handling of the new BMW i5 were already laid in the first test drives in Arjeplog.

Testing in everyday driving and on wintry roads in the foothills of the Alps.

This was followed by more testing over the course of 2022, both at other
BMW Group test facilities and in everyday driving in and around Munich as well as in the vicinity of BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. The task here was to continue refining the car’s chassis technology and acoustic properties under a wide variety of conditions, as well as honing the drive unit’s power delivery, in order to produce a well-resolved driving experience at all times.

Here again, part of the development work was deliberately carried out during the colder months on icy and snowy roads in the Alpine foothills. This last winter, BMW i5 prototypes – now sporting less camouflage and near-production headlights – were regularly sent out for testing to verify the functionality and reliability of their powertrain and chassis control systems in extremely demanding road and weather conditions. The BMW engineers involved in the vehicle project were able to directly inspect the current state of development through testing in the BMW brand’s native Bavaria before it was time to return to endurance testing near the Arctic Circle in February 2023.

BMW i5 thrills with its unrivalled handling on ice and snow.

The purpose of this second round of testing in Sweden was to fine-tune all powertrain and chassis control systems. Thanks to their low-grip surfaces, the test areas sited on frozen lakes around Arjeplog were particularly well suited for delicately adjusting the drive torque control system in the BMW i5 under precisely reproducible conditions. In the new BMW i5, the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system, the near-actuator wheel slip limitation function and the drive torque control system are interlinked so that they can interact and complement each other flexibly in any driving situation. As a result, the all-electric sedan performs at least as proficiently as any conventionally powered model on ice and snow.

The integrated application of all powertrain and chassis systems underpins the outstanding handling abilities displayed by the BMW i5 in winter testing. The more challenging the conditions, the more impressive were the speed and precision of the control systems in the fully electric version of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. The BMW i5 serves up a harmonious blend of optimum traction when pulling away and supreme driving stability when cornering or braking, which is unique in the competitive environment.
