BMW M GmbH breidt zijn aanbod in het uiterst performante segment uit en zet tegelijkertijd de elektrificatie van zijn modellengamma door. De nieuwe BMW M5 Touring (energieverbruik, gewogen, gecombineerd: 2,0 – 1,7 l/100 km [141,2 – 166,2 mpg imp] en 27,5 – 25,8 kWh/100 km; CO₂-uitstoot, gewogen, gecombineerd: 46 – 39 g/km; brandstofverbruik met lege batterij: 10,9 – 10,4 l/100 km [25,9 – 27,2 mpg imp] in de WLTP-cyclus; CO₂-klassen, gewogen, gecombineerd: B, met lege batterij G) combineert een uitzonderlijke dynamiek op de weg en het circuit met een veelzijdige interieurruimte voor dagelijkse taken, vrijetijdsactiviteiten en uitstapjes. Dit is de derde huidige BMW M-auto die wordt aangedreven door een M HYBRID-aandrijfsysteem, waarbij een hoogtoerige V8-motor wordt versterkt door een elektromotor met een extreem snelle vermogensontplooiing. Samen leveren de motor en elektromotor een maximumvermogen van 535 kW/727 pk en een maximumkoppel van 1.000 Nm.

Het voertuig- en aandrijfconcept van de nieuwe BMW M5 Touring is gebaseerd op een uitzonderlijk veelzijdige rijervaring, die wordt gekenmerkt door een onbeperkt dagelijks gebruiksgemak en langeafstandscapaciteiten, fascinerende prestaties en de mogelijkheid om zowel in de stad als daarbuiten zuiver elektrisch te rijden. De vermogensoverdracht via de achtversnellingsbak M Steptronic, de vierwielaandrijving M xDrive, het actief M differentieel en de M-specifieke chassistechnologie zijn allemaal precies afgestemd op de prestatiekenmerken van het M HYBRID-aandrijfsysteem. De nieuwe BMW M5 Touring accelereert van 0 tot 100 km/u in 3,6 seconden en zorgt voor een glimlach op het gezicht met zijn uitstekende elasticiteit en ongeëvenaarde precisie in zeer dynamische rijsituaties.

De nieuwe BMW M5 Touring viert zijn wereldpremière op de Monterey Car Week in Californië (VS) midden augustus 2024. De marktlancering in november 2024 volgt op de start van de productie
bij de fabriek van de BMW Group in Dingolfing. De belangrijkste markten voor de nieuwe BMW M5 Touring zijn Duitsland en de VS, gevolgd door Groot-Brittannië, Canada en Zwitserland.

Koetswerkdesign: atletische vormen, typische Touring-proporties.

Met een frisse interpretatie van het typische M-design voor uiterst performante wagens drukt de nieuwe BMW M5 Touring zijn op een racewagen geïnspireerd karakter duidelijk uit. Een bijzonder groot deel van de oppervlakken in koetswerkkleur en een zwarte afwerking voor het dak creëren een puristische uitstraling die perfect aansluit bij de bekende proporties van een Touring-model. Een modelspecifiek zijframe met uitgesproken wielkasten in combinatie met gespierde schouders en een lange daklijn resulteert in de atletische uitstraling van de nieuwe BMW M5 Touring en onderscheidt hem nadrukkelijk van de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring.

De gebeitelde voorkant wordt gevormd door grote luchtinlaten en een nieuw ontworpen niervormig radiatorrooster van BMW M, dat standaard wordt verlicht door de BMW Iconic Glow contourverlichting. Aan de andere kant van de wagen accentueren slanke achterlichten die doorlopen tot in de flanken van de wagen, verticale reflectoren aan de buitenkant van de achterzijde en een tweedelige diffusor met twee links en rechts geïntegreerde uitlaatpijpen de breedte en krachtige uitstraling van de nieuwe BMW M5 Touring.

De M HYBRID-aandrijving combineert een V8-motor met een hoog toerental met een krachtige elektromotor.

Het M HYBRID-aandrijfsysteem van de nieuwe BMW M5 Touring brengt een 4,4-liter V8-motor en een elektromotor samen die geïntegreerd zijn in de achtversnellingsbak M Steptronic. Naast de nieuwste versie van de M TwinPower Turbo-technologie beschikt de verbrandingsmotor ook over een cilinderrij-overspannend uitlaatspruitstuk en een geoptimaliseerde oliescheiding. Hij levert een maximumvermogen van 430 kW/585 pk en een maximumkoppel van 750 Nm.

De elektromotor is afkomstig van de nieuwste, vijfde generatie van de BMW eDrive-technologie en levert een maximumvermogen van 145 kW/197 pk. Zijn nominaal koppel van 280 Nm stijgt tot het effectieve koppel bij de input van de transmissie van 450 Nm met behulp van de door BMW gepatenteerde voorschakelfase. Het door de elektromotor opgewekte vermogen, dat wordt geactiveerd zodra de bestuurder vertrekt, en het intelligent gestuurde samenspel tussen motor en elektromotor verzekeren een vertragingsvrije respons en een lineaire vermogensontplooiing in de hoogste vermogens- en toerentallengebieden. De standaard topsnelheid van 250 km/u kan verhoogd worden tot 305 km/u met het optionele M Driver’s Package.

Het sportuitlaatsysteem met elektrisch gestuurde kleppen wekt een emotioneel meeslepende klank van het aandrijfsysteem op. Afhankelijk van de gekozen configuratie en werkingsmodus krijgt de vermogensontplooiing van de elektromotor ook een akoestische ondersteuning dankzij BMW IconicSounds Electric. Alleen op elektriciteit rijden bij snelheden tot maximum 140 km/u is mogelijk. De hoogspanningsbatterij van de nieuwe BMW M5 Touring levert 18,6 kWh bruikbare energie. Daarmee is een elektrisch rijbereik van 61 – 67 kilometer haalbaar in de WLTP-testcyclus. De gecombineerde laadeenheid ondersteunt laden op wisselstroom tot 11 kW.

De vierwielaandrijving M xDrive is net als het elektronisch gestuurde actief M differentieel op de achteras speciaal afgestemd op de prestatiekenmerken van het M HYBRID-aandrijfsysteem. Naast de standaard 4WD-instelling kunnen bestuurders ook het M Setup-menu gebruiken om de 4WD Sport-modus te selecteren, waarin de achterwaarts gerichte setup van het M xDrive-systeem bijzonder uitgesproken is. En wanneer de 2WD-modus wordt gekozen en het DSC-systeem (Dynamic Stability Control) uitgeschakeld, kunnen ervaren bestuurders genieten van een uitzonderlijke zuiverheid.

M-specifieke chassistechnologie zorgt voor meeslepende dynamiek.

De nieuwe BMW M5 Touring legt de lat in zijn segment hoger met zijn opvallende dynamische kwaliteiten. Hierbij speelt een verbeterde koetswerkstijfheid een belangrijke rol, naast het aandrijfsysteem, de lange wielbasis en de brede sporen. Naast een verstevigingsplaat van de toren naar het schutbord, veerpoten van de toren naar de voorkant en andere verstevigingselementen in de voorbouw, beschikt de achterzijde over modelspecifieke ondervloerveerpoten, inclusief een dwarsbalk, een verstevigingsplaat en andere verstevigingselementen in de bagageruimte.

De geavanceerde chassistechnologie van de nieuwe BMW M5 Touring bestaat uit een vooras met dubbele A-armen en een achteras met vijf geleidingsarmen met modelspecifieke kinematica en elastokinematica. De standaarduitrusting omvat ook een adaptieve M-ophanging met elektronisch gestuurde schokdempers en Integral Active Steering. De M-specifieke afstelling, individueel instelbare systemen en de mogelijkheid om de schokdempers aan elk wiel afzonderlijk aan te passen optimaliseren de verbinding van het koetswerk met de weg en zorgen ervoor dat de talenten van de auto maximaal worden verdeeld tussen dynamische kracht en rijcomfort. De tractie, wendbaarheid en richtingsstabiliteit plukken de vruchten van de slipbeperking bij de inschakeling en de netwerking van alle controlesystemen binnen de afstelling van het geïntegreerde dwarsdynamiekbeheer.

De standaard gemonteerde M Compound-remmen bieden de nodige remkracht. Net als de als optie verkrijgbare M carbon-keramische remmen worden ze gecombineerd met een geïntegreerd remsysteem dat twee instellingen voor pedaalgevoel en -respons biedt. De lichtmetalen velgen M (voor: 20 inch; achter: 21 inch) zijn standaard voorzien van uiterst performante banden.

Brede waaier rijhulpsystemen voor geautomatiseerd rijden en parkeren.

De nieuwe BMW M5 Touring is standaard uitgerust met een groot aantal rijhulpsystemen, waarvan de functionaliteit nog verder verbeterd wordt door het geïntegreerde remsysteem en het genetwerkte dwarsdynamiekbeheer. De standaarduitrusting omvat functies zoals Front Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning inclusief terugkeer naar de rijstrook door tegensturen, de Evasion Assistant, de Attentiveness Assistant en Speed Limit Info.

Als optie kunnen klanten hun wagen ook bestellen met het Driving Assistant Professional-systeem met stuur- en rijstrookassistent, actieve snelheidsregelaar, automatische snelheidslimietassistent, verkeerslichtdetectie en actief navigatiesysteem. De eveneens optionele Parking Assistant Professional maakt het mogelijk om parkeren en manoeuvreren met een smartphone van buiten de auto te bedienen.

Configureerbare rijervaring voor dagelijkse ritten en circuitsessies.

Het M-specifieke bedieningspaneel op de middenconsole biedt bijkomende opties om de rijervaring te personaliseren. Met de knop Setup krijgt u bijvoorbeeld rechtstreeks toegang tot de instellingen voor het aandrijfsysteem, de Drivelogic-functie, het chassis, de stuurinrichting, het remsysteem, de M xDrive en de intensiteit van de energierecuperatie bij het remmen. Bestuurders kunnen de M-toetsen op het stuurwiel gebruiken om twee configuraties op te roepen die ze eerder hebben geprogrammeerd voor de voertuiginstelling.

Ook de M Dynamic-modus om de stabiliteitsregeling bij te regelen kan met een druk op de knop worden geactiveerd. DSC kan ook volledig uitgeschakeld worden. Bestuurders kunnen de configuratie van de displays en rijhulpsystemen aanpassen met de M-modusknop. In de SPORT-modus zijn de interventies van de rijhulpsystemen en de inhoud op het informatiedisplay en het BMW Head-Up Display beperkt tot de essentiële functies die nodig zijn voor een sportieve rijstijl. Als M Drive Professional is opgegeven, is ook de TRACK-modus beschikbaar. Deze optie omvat ook de M Laptimer en de Boost Control-functie voor wanneer de bestuurder een bijzonder dynamische snelheidsinjectie wil oproepen.

Met de M HYBRID-toets kunt u de bedrijfsmodus van het aandrijfsysteem naar wens instellen. Terwijl de basisinstelling Hybrid de wisselwerking tussen motor en elektromotor regelt, biedt de Electric-modus zuiver elektrisch rijden. De eControl-modus zorgt voor een doeltreffende recuperatie van remenergie of houdt de batterijlading op een constant niveau. Daarnaast zijn de modi Dynamic en Dynamic Plus ook beschikbaar als onderdeel van M Drive Professional, en regelen zij het koelsysteem en de aandrijving om de prestaties op een constant hoog niveau te houden of korte vermogensstoten op landwegen of circuits te genereren.

Vooruitstrevende sportwagencockpit met M-specifieke displays.

De op de bestuurder gerichte cockpit van de nieuwe BMW M5 Touring heeft de uitstraling van een authentieke raceauto met zijn nieuw ontworpen lederen M-stuur, multifunctionele M-zetels, M-specifieke gegevens op het BMW Curved Display en het standaard BMW Head-Up Display. Voor een exclusieve en luxueuze sfeer aan boord zorgen onder meer de lederen bekleding Merino, de BMW Interaction Bar, automatische airconditioning met vier zones, M-specifieke interieurverlichting met welkomstanimatie en een Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound-systeem. Op de optielijst staan onder meer stuurwielverwarming, actieve zetelventilatie en een panoramisch glazen zonnedak. Vanaf de lente van 2025 kunnen klanten hun wagen ook een extra luxueuze toets geven in de vorm van BMW Individual leder Metallic Merino.

Het laadvermogen van de nieuwe BMW M5 Touring kan uitgebreid worden van 500 tot maximaal 1.630 liter. De standaard gemonteerde comforttoegang en automatische achterklepbediening vergemakkelijken het in- en uitladen. De maximale aanhangwagenbelasting voor de optionele aanhangwagenkoppeling bedraagt 2.000 kg.

De nieuwste versie van BMW iDrive, gebaseerd op BMW Operating System 8.5, is speciaal ontworpen voor het bedienen van voertuigfuncties met behulp van een aanraakscherm en natuurlijke taal. Tot de standaarduitrusting behoort ook BMW Live Cockpit Professional, met het navigatiesysteem BMW Maps en de functie Augmented View. Een antenne die compatibel is met 5G garandeert een optimale connectiviteit voor het gebruik van digitale diensten zoals videostreaming en gaming in de wagen. En de smartphone-integratie via Apple CarPlay® en Android Auto™ verloopt naadloos. Daarnaast biedt de nieuwe BMW M5 Touring zowel de mogelijkheid om een Personal eSim te gebruiken als tal van personaliseringsopties die door de BMW ID en de My BMW App ontgrendeld worden.

De imposante krachtontplooiing en meeslepende prestatie-ervaring van de nieuwe BMW M5 gaan hand in hand met een nieuwe interpretatie van het prestatiegerichte design waarvoor M modellen bekendstaan. Prominente wielkasten en zijschorten, een gebeitelde voorschort en modelspecifieke oppervlakken rond de C-stijl – met onder meer een gebosseleerd ‘M5’-logo ter hoogte van de Hofmeister-knik – geven de wagen een atletische uitstraling die hem duidelijker dan ooit onderscheidt van de BMW 5 Reeks Berline. Als zodanig accentueert het exterieurdesign – net als de sfeer van het luxueuze interieur, dat met M specifieke voorzieningen werd getooid – het meerlagige karakter van de nieuwe BMW M5. Zijn evenwichtige en geruststellende karakter wordt ondersteund door enorme vermogensreserves die op elk moment kunnen worden opgeroepen. Die prestatiereserve, die discreet op de achtergrond blijft tijdens ontspannen, zuiver elektrische ritten, komt tot leven wanneer de BMW M5 over langere afstanden de sportieve kant van zijn persoonlijkheid onthult en wordt ten volle ontketend tijdens circuitsessies.

Het M HYBRID-systeem, de vermogensoverdracht en de chassistechnologie op maat van zijn specifieke prestatiekenmerken, geven de nieuwe BMW M5 een dwarse en overlangse dynamiek die hun gelijke niet kennen in dit segment. De nieuwe BMW M5 beleeft zijn wereldpremière op het Goodwood Festival of Speed in Engeland in juli 2024 en de productie gaat in dezelfde maand van start in de fabriek van de BMW Group in Dingolfing. De wereldwijde marktintroductie van de nieuwe BMW M5 start in november 2024 en gaat gepaard met de introductie van de nieuwe BMW M5 Touring. De belangrijkste verkoopregio’s voor de high-performance-berline zijn Noord-Amerika en Europa. De VS is met voorsprong de grootste individuele markt, gevolgd door Groot-Brittannië, Duitsland, Zuid-Korea, China, Japan en Canada.

De nieuwe BMW M5 met M HYBRID-aandrijving: bedwelmende prestaties, indrukwekkend elektrisch rijbereik.

Het M HYBRID-aandrijfsysteem van de nieuwe BMW M5 verenigt een klassieke, hoogtoerige 4.4 V8-motor met een elektromotor, waarvan de prestatiekenmerken speciaal op de BMW M5 zijn afgestemd en die in de achttraps M versnellingsbak Steptronic is geïntegreerd. De verbrandingsmotor beschikt over de geavanceerde M TwinPower Turbo-technologie, een dwarsgeplaatst uitlaatspruitstuk en een geoptimaliseerde oliescheiding. Hij levert een maximumvermogen van 430 kW/585 pk en een maximumkoppel van 750 Nm. Het maximumvermogen van de elektromotor bedraagt 145 kW/197 pk. Hij haalt een nominaal koppel van 280 Nm, maar dankzij de ‘pre-gearing’-functie kan het koppel aan de ingang van de transmissie worden verhoogd tot 450 Nm.

De combinatie van een verbrandingsmotor en elektromotor hanteert hetzelfde principe als het aandrijfsysteem in de BMW M Hybrid V8-endurancebolide. De elektromotor kan zijn vermogen onmiddellijk opwekken en de intelligent gestuurde wisselwerking tussen verbrandingsmotor en elektromotor zorgt ervoor dat het M HYBRID-systeem onmiddellijk reageert op elke beweging van het gaspedaal. De lineaire vermogensontplooiing die typisch is voor de BMW M modellen verschijnt hier in een bijzonder meeslepende vorm. De achtcilindermotor haalt toerentallen tot 7.200 t/min, terwijl de nieuwe BMW M5 zijn bestuurder trakteert op een gevoel van onophoudelijke vermogensontplooiing in de hoogste regionen van de belasting- en snelheidsbereiken. De topsnelheid is standaard begrensd tot 250 km/u, maar kan worden verhoogd tot 305 km/u met het M Driver’s Package.

Het sportuitlaatsysteem van de nieuwe BMW M5 onderstreept de prestatie-ervaring met een veelkleurige en meeslepende motorklank. Het is voorzien van elektrisch gestuurde, continu verstelbare kleppen en twee dubbele uitlaatpijpen zoals die ook op andere M modellen worden gebruikt, elk met een sierstuk van 100 millimeter in Schwarzchrom.

De vermogensontplooiing van de elektromotor wordt op akoestisch vlak ondersteund door BMW IconicSounds Electric. Deze M specifieke elektrische aandrijfsound levert authentieke reacties op bewegingen van het gaspedaal wanneer de wagen zuiver elektrisch rijdt. Met de relevante configuratie van het aandrijfsysteem genereert hij bovendien een meeslepende soundtrack om het bijkomende elektrisch vermogen bovenop het vermogen van de V8-motor te benadrukken.

In de zuiver elektrische bedrijfsmodus haalt de nieuwe BMW M5 snelheden tot 140 km/u. De hoogspanningsbatterij die laag in de bodem van de wagen zit, heeft 18,6 kWh aan bruikbare energie, goed voor een elektrisch rijbereik van 67 – 69 kilometer over de WLTP-cyclus, een waarde die door geen enkele concurrent wordt geëvenaard. Met de Combined Charging Unit kan de nieuwe BMW M5 worden opgeladen met wisselstroom van maximaal 7,4 kW.

Het vermogen van de verbrandingsmotor en elektromotor wordt overgebracht op de weg via het vierwielaandrijvingssysteem M xDrive, dat – zeker in de 4WD Sport-modus – het grootste deel van het vermogen naar de achterwielen stuurt. De bestuurder beschikt echter ook over een 2WD-modus, die het vermogen exclusief naar de achterwielen stuurt en Dynamic Stabiliy Control (DSC) uitschakelt. Dat zal beslist in de smaak vallen bij ervaren bestuurders die de voorkeur geven aan een uitgepuurde prestatiegerichte ervaring. Deze verder ontwikkelde versie van M xDrive is net als het elektronisch gestuurde actieve M differentieel op de achteras, speciaal afgestemd op de prestatiekenmerken van de M HYBRID-aandrijving.

Gesofistikeerde chassistechnologie met M specifieke afstelling.

Het chassisontwerp van de nieuwe BMW M5 bestaat uit een vooras met dubbele dwarsgeplaatste veerbenen en een achteras met vijf wielarmen en specifieke kinematica en elastokinematica, evenals diverse andere speciaal afgestelde componenten. De elektrisch bekrachtigde tandheugelstuurinrichting met M Servotronic en variabele stuurverhouding heeft een stijve verbinding met het subframe van de vooras om een optimale feedback van de weg en een hoge mate van richtingsnauwkeurigheid te garanderen. Samen met de brede sporen en de uitstekende torsiestijfheid van de koetswerk- en chassisbevestigingen levert deze combinatie de rijeigenschappen waarvoor BMW M modellen bekendstaan, gevormd door wendbaarheid, precisie en de lineaire opbouw van laterale krachten wanneer de bestuurder zijn wagen de sporen geeft.

Eveneens standaard zijn de adaptieve M sportophanging met elektronisch gestuurde schokdempers en Integral Active Steering, dat de achterwielen tot 1,5 graden laat meedraaien. M specifieke afstelling, individueel instelbare systemen en de mogelijkheid om de schokdempers aan elk wiel afzonderlijk aan te passen, optimaliseren de verbinding van het koetswerk met de weg en maximaliseren de talentontplooiing van de wagen – van het dagelijkse rijcomfort tot de circuitgerichte dynamische kwaliteiten. Wanneer de achterwielen meedraaien, bevordert dat de richtingsstabiliteit bij hoge snelheden of de wendbaarheid en het comfort bij manoeuvres.

De tractie, wendbaarheid en richtingsstabiliteit plukken de vruchten van de slipbeperking bij de inschakeling en de netwerking van alle controlesystemen binnen de afstelling van het geïntegreerde dwarsdynamiekbeheer. Zowel de standaard M Compound-remmen als de optionele M Carbon keramische remmen worden gecombineerd met een geïntegreerd remsysteem dat de bestuurder twee modi voor het pedaalgevoel biedt. BMW M lichtmetalen velgen (20" vooraan, 21" achteraan) zijn standaard en zijn geschoeid met high-performance-banden.

Rijhulpsystemen voor een geruststellend en comfortabel rijgedrag.

De veel bredere keuze aan standaard en optionele systemen voor geautomatiseerd rijden en parkeren dan bij het vorige model tilt de gemoedsrust en het comfort in dagelijkse omstandigheden naar ongekende hoogten. De standaarduitrusting van de nieuwe BMW M5 omvat functies zoals botswaarschuwing vooraan, Lane Departure Warning inclusief terugkeer naar de rijstrook door tegensturen, de Evasion Aid, Attention Assist en Speed Limit Info. Het optionele Driving Assistant Pack Professional combineert de Active Cruise Control met Stop&Go functie met systemen zoals de Steering & Lane Control Assistant, stoplichtherkenning, automatische Speed Limit Assist en actieve navigatie.

De nieuwe BMW M5 is standaard uitgerust met het Parking Assistant Pack met Reversing Assistant. Het optionele Parking Assistant Pack Professional maakt het bovendien mogelijk om over een afstand tot 200 meter automatisch te parkeren en manoeuvreren vanuit de wagen of via een smartphone van buitenaf.

Nieuwe mogelijkheden om de rijervaring aan te passen aan uw persoonlijke smaak.

Het bedieningspaneel op de middenconsole van de nieuwe BMW M5 bevat een modelspecifiek geheel van knoppen waarmee de rijervaring op verschillende manieren aan de individuele voorkeuren kan worden aangepast. De Setup-knop geeft rechtstreeks toegang tot de configuratie van het aandrijfsysteem, Drivelogic, het chassis, de stuurinrichting, het remsysteem en M xDrive, alsook tot de intensiteit van de energierecuperatie tijdens het remmen. Met de M toetsen op het stuur kunnen twee algemene voertuigconfiguraties worden opgeslagen en geselecteerd. De Launch Control-functie is beschikbaar in alle instellingen van het M Setup-menu, met uitzondering van de 2WD-modus van het M xDrive-systeem.

Door op de DSC-toets te drukken wordt de M Dynamic mode ingeschakeld, die de drempelwaarden voor de interventie van DSC verhoogt om de reminput te verhogen en het motorvermogen te verlagen. Het DSC-systeem kan ook volledig worden uitgeschakeld. Met een andere knop kan de bestuurder de M Mode selecteren. Wanneer de bestuurder overschakelt van de standaard ROAD-stand naar de SPORT-modus, worden de interventies van de rijhulpsystemen beperkt tot de essentiële functies die nodig zijn voor een sportieve rijstijl. Hetzelfde geldt voor de inhoud weergegeven op het Info Display. Met de standard M Drive Professional kan de klant ook gebruikmaken van de TRACK-modus. Andere kenmerken van M Drive Professional zijn de M Laptimer en de Boost Control-functie, die de overlangse dynamiek maximaliseert bij hernemingen en inhaalmanoeuvres.

Ook de bedrijfsmodus van het M HYBRID-systeem kan naar wens worden aangepast. Met de nieuwe M Hybrid-toets kan de bestuurder kiezen tussen de HYBRID-modus – voor een intelligent gestuurde wisselwerking tussen verbrandingsmotor en elektromotor om naargelang de rijsituatie het rendement dan wel de prestaties te maximaliseren – en de ELECTRIC-stand, waarin de verbrandingsmotor enkel wordt ingeschakeld bij een kick-down of bij gebruik van de schakelpaddles. De eCONTROL-modus wordt gebruikt voor een doeltreffende recuperatie van remenergie en om het batterijniveau constant te houden. M Drive Professional voegt tot slot de DYNAMIC- en DYNAMIC PLUS-modi toe, die het aandrijfsysteem en het koelsysteem voorbereiden om de output op een constant hoog niveau te houden of kortstondig de maximale output te genereren tijdens een gerichte circuitrit.

Vooruitstrevende sportwagencockpit, M specifieke aanduidingen op het BMW Curved Display, exclusieve sfeer.

Naast het M specifieke bedieningspaneel op de middenconsole omvat de vooruitstrevende sportwagencockpit van de nieuwe BMW M5 ook een nieuw ontworpen, afgeplat lederen M stuur met verlichte M toetsen, M multifunctionele zetels met een uitgebreide elektrische afstelling en het BMW Curved Display, dat net als het standaard Head-Up Display M specifieke inhoud omvat. De standaard BMW Live Cockpit Navigation Professional geeft ook het navigatiesysteem BMW Maps en de functie Augmented View weer op het Control Display.

Een opgewaardeerde versie van BMW iDrive is standaard in de nieuwe BMW M5. Het is gebaseerd op het BMW Operating System 8.5 en speciaal ontworpen voor gebruik via aanraakbediening en natuurlijke spraakcommando’s. De digitale technologie omvat nu ook de bedieningselementen voor de functies van de klimaatregeling. De temperatuurselectie, luchtstroomintensiteit, zetelverwarming en – indien besteld – de stuurverwarming kunnen nu worden bediend via een menu-item in het onderste deel van het Control Display of met gesproken commando’s.

Dragen eveneens bij tot de exclusieve interieursfeer: de standaardbekleding in leder Merino, de BMW Interaction Bar, de airconditioning met vier zones, de verwarmbare voorzetels, de sfeerverlichting met M specifieke interieurverlichting inclusief welkomstanimatie en het panoramisch doorschijnend schuifdak. Daarnaast omvat de standaarduitrusting van de nieuwe BMW M5 ook het Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, een Wireless Charging-houder, comforttoegang, een alarmsysteem, automatische bediening van de achterklep en de laadkabel Professional.

Op de optielijst staan onder meer het M Carbon exterieurpakket, de hemelbekleding in Alcantara, stuurverwarming, actieve zetelventilatie en een aanhangwagenkoppeling. Vanaf de lancering zullen ook modelspecifieke BMW M Performance Parts worden aangeboden voor de nieuwe BMW M5. De selectie omvat gesmede BMW M Performance lichtmetalen velgen en koetswerkonderdelen uit met koolstofvezel versterkte kunststof (CFRP).

De zevende generatie van de BMW M5 Berline onderging al een intensief testprogramma. BMW M GmbH zet zijn productoffensief voort in 2024 en bevestigt de uitbreiding van zijn modelgamma met een Touring-variant van het nieuwe high-performancemodel.

München . De prototypes zijn zorgvuldig gecamoufleerd, maar ze kunnen hun karakter als high-performancewagens niet verhullen. De toekomstige generatie van de BMW M5 is de praktische fase van zijn serieontwikkelingsproces ingegaan. De nieuwe high-performanceberline van BMW M GmbH rondt nu zijn testritten af op openbare wegen, testterreinen van de BMW Group en racecircuits over de hele wereld.

Bovendien kunnen fans van het merk BMW M uitkijken naar nog een resultaat van het productoffensief dat voortloopt tot in 2024. BMW M GmbH heeft nu officieel bevestigd dat het voor de nieuwe editie van de BMW M5 een Touring-variant aan zijn modellengamma zal toevoegen. De perfecte symbiose van typische M prestaties, compromisloos langeafstandscomfort en een indrukwekkend ruimtegevoel zal in 2024 herleven met de nieuwe BMW M5 Touring.

Net als de toekomstige BMW M5 Berline zal ook de Touring-variant beschikken over een volledig nieuw ontwikkeld, gedeeltelijk geëlektrificeerd aandrijfsysteem. Zijn typische M prestaties en de nauwkeurig afgestelde chassistechnologie, verfijnd met innovatieve systemen, brengen de rijdynamiek en wendbaarheid naar een uniek niveau in deze klasse. Zo zet BMW M GmbH gestaag zijn weg naar elektrificatie verder. "We installeren nu ook een hybride aandrijfsysteem met typische M prestaties in andere high-performancewagens", zegt Dirk Häcker, Head of Development bij BMW M GmbH.

Al bijna 40 jaar is de BMW M5 de referentie voor rijdynamiek, wendbaarheid en precisie in het segment van de high-performanceberlines. Evolutionaire vooruitgang, ontwikkelingsknowhow uit de racerij en baanbrekende innovaties op het gebied van aandrijving, ophanging, aerodynamica en lichtgewicht constructie hebben de geschiedenis van de BMW M5 gevormd. Motoren met zes, acht of tien cilinders, M TwinPower Turbo-technologie en een hoogtoerentalkarakter, het compound-remsysteem met M Carbon keramische remmen en vierwielaandrijving M xDrive zijn slechts enkele van de technologische mijlpalen waarmee dit model herhaaldelijk topprestaties heeft geherdefinieerd in een berline die onvoorwaardelijk geschikt is voor dagelijks gebruik. De eerste BMW M5 Touring werd in 1992 gelanceerd op basis van de BMW M5 Berline van de tweede generatie en staat sindsdien voor een combinatie van topprestaties en dagelijks gebruiksgemak op vier wielen. In 2007 voegde BMW M GmbH ook een Touring-variant toe aan de BMW M5 van de vierde generatie. En momenteel onderstreept de succesvolle lancering van de eerste BMW M3 Competition Touring met M xDrive* ook de grote aantrekkingskracht van dit bijzondere voertuigconcept in het premium middenklassesegment van de high-performancewagens.

De tests van de eerste prototypes van de nieuwe BMW M5 Touring gaan de komende dagen van start in het stadsverkeer en op landwegen en snelwegen rond München en aan het hoofdkwartier van BMW M GmbH in Garching. De nieuwe BMW M5 Touring zal dan ook profiteren van de geïntegreerde toepassing van alle aandrijf- en ophangingssystemen op onder meer de Nordschleife van de Nürburgring. BMW M GmbH is expanding its ranks of ultra-sporty CS models with the introduction of the BMW M5 CS (fuel consumption, combined: 11.3 – 11.1 l/100 km [25.0 – 25.5 mpg imp] correspond to NEDC; 11,3  - 10,9 l/100 km correspond to WLTP, CO₂ emissions, combined: 258 – 253 g/km correspond to NEDC, 257 – 248 g/km correspond to WLTP). The limited-run, exclusive special-edition model treats four people to an extraordinary driving experience and blends standout performance attributes with an exclusive and luxurious appearance.

The 4.4-litre V8 engine with 467 kW/635 hp makes the BMW M5 CS the most powerful car in the history of BMW M. Standard features include the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which also offers a 2WD mode for pure rear-wheel drive.

Rigorously applied lightweight design enables a weight saving of some 70 kilograms over the BMW M5 Competition (fuel consumption, combined: 11.3 – 11.1 l/100 km [26.7 – 26.9 mpg imp] correspond to NEDC; 11,3 -10,9 l/100 km correspond to WLTP; CO₂ emissions, combined: 259 – 254 g/km correspond to NEDC; 259 – 249 g/km correspond to WLTP). With retuned bearing springs at the front and rear axle and further refined damper control, the chassis has been adapted to the lower vehicle weight and the increased performance potential of the standard mixed-size Pirelli P Zero Corsa track tyres (front: 275/35 R 20, rear: 285/35 R 20).

The BMW M5 CS sprints from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.0 seconds, and from 0 – 200 km/h (124 mph) in 10.3 seconds. Top speed is an electronically governed 305 km/h (189 mph).

The exceptional driving experience on board the BMW M5 CS can be enjoyed by four people – the driver and front passenger in M Carbon seats and two other passengers in the individual rear seats. The black Merino leather covers (fine-grain for the front seats) also feature eye-catching contrasting panels and decorative stitching in Mugello Red. The integral head restraints – with illuminated M5 logos for the front seats – display an outline of the legendary Nürburgring circuit.

The centre marker perforation with red background on the M Alcantara steering wheel is a classical racing car touch; the gearshift paddles are made from carbon fibre and the steering wheel spokes have Black Chrome trim.

A fixed lightweight cover on the centre console replaces the usual armrest with opening lid. Its black Merino leather is complemented by red double stitching. The colour red is used again for the “CS” badging on the instrument panel and between the bucket-style seats in the rear.

The BMW kidney grille surround on the BMW M5 CS, the “M5 CS” badges on the kidney grille, the M gills on the front wings and the boot lid are finished in the bold colour shade Gold Bronze, as are the 20‑inch M forged wheels in Y-spoke design (front: 9.5 J x 20, rear: 10.5 J x 20). The door sill finishers come with illuminated “M5 CS” badges.

The L-shaped light tubes of the BMW Laser headlights illuminate yellow instead of white when low beam, high beam or the Welcome Light is switched on, bringing successful GT racing cars to mind.

The bonnet, front splitter, exterior mirror caps, rear spoiler, rear diffuser, M Power engine compartment cover and intake silencer are made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). Some elements feature exposed carbon fibre.

Standard specification for the M5 CS includes its stainless-steel sports exhaust system with four unadorned tailpipes and the M Carbon ceramic brakes, whose callipers are painted in Red as standard or Gold as an option.

Available alongside the Brands Hatch Grey metallic paint shade are the exclusive BMW Individual matt paint finishes Frozen Brands Hatch Grey metallic and Frozen Deep Green metallic.

The market launch of the new BMW M5 CS will get underway in spring 2021; in Germany it will be priced at 180,400 euros.

The fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions figures are determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany. The range shown considers the different sizes of the selected wheels/tyres and the selected items of optional equipment, and may vary during configuration.
The values are based on the new WLTP test cycle and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to ensure comparability between the vehicles. De BMW M5 Competition ligt zeven millimeter lager dan de BMW M5 en bevat andere doordachte aanpassingen aan de ophanging en veren. Deze set-up maakt het extra vermogen van de wagen mogelijk en komt echt tot zijn recht op het racecircuit.

• De BMW M5 sprint in slechts 3,4 seconden van 0 naar 100 km/u en in nauwelijks 11,1 seconden naar 200 km/u. De BMW M5 Competition haalt deze cijfers nog sneller: 100 km/u in 3,3 seconden, 200 km/u in 10,8 seconden.

• Net als bij de BMW 5 Reeks reiken de vernieuwde BMW-nieren verder naar beneden tot in de voorbumperschort. De chroomrand heeft nu een design uit één stuk dat beide nieren omhult, met M specifieke dubbele stangen en M-badge.

• De vernieuwde voorbumperschort heeft krachtigere contouren en grotere luchtinlaten aan de zijkanten, terwijl de grote centrale luchtinlaat een zeshoekige vorm heeft en de oliekoeler bevat in combinatie met de radarsensor voor de Active Cruise Control (ACC). Nieuwe L vormige lichtbuizen die in smalle strepen richting de nieren lopen, voegen een dynamische toets toe aan de nieuw ontworpen ledkoplampen. De nieuwe optie van BMW Individual Shadowline voegt een donkergetint accent toe aan de Adaptive LED Headlights en BMW Laserlight.

• De led-achterlichten zorgen nu voor een driedimensionaal gevoel en een frisse kijk op de vertrouwde BMW L-vorm met hun nauwkeurige lichtgrafiek.

• Het grotere centrale scherm van 12,3" maakt het eenvoudiger dan ooit om de talloze functies van de rijhulpsystemen en BMW M xDrive in het oog te houden.

• Het nieuwe bedieningsconcept met twee knoppen in de middenconsole is afgeleid van de BMW M8. Met de M Mode-knop kan de bestuurder snel schakelen tussen de ROAD- en SPORTinstellingen. De Setup-knop leidt rechtstreeks naar het menu van het centrale scherm, waar bestuurders een individuele configuratie voor de motor- en chassisopties kunnen kiezen. • De metaalkleuren Brands Hatch Grau en Motegi Rot zijn allebei nieuw, net als de afwerkingen Tansanitblau II metallic, Aventurinrot II metallic en Frozen Bluestone matt metallic van BMW Individual. Champagner Quarz metallic werd hernoemd naar Alvitgrau metallic.

• De 20” M-velgen met dubbele spaken in gepolijst Orbit Grey, bekend van de BMW M8, zijn nu als optie verkrijgbaar.

• De standaard M Compound-remmen zijn voortaan verkrijgbaar met remzadels in Schwarz hochglänzend of Rot hochglänzend als alternatief voor de bestaande blauwe afwerking.

• De prijzen in België en Luxemburg beginnen bij respectievelijk €123.000 (BE) en € 118.950 (LUX) voor de BMW M5 en €132.200 (BE) en € 127.850 (LUX) voor de BMW M5 Competition.

Munich. With the introduction of 48-volt mild hybrid technology in additional model series from summer 2020, BMW continues to consistently reduce fuel consumption and emissions in its current vehicle fleet. From July and August 2020, both efficiency and dynamic performance will be optimised in 51 models with the use of a particularly powerful starter generator and an additional battery. This also applies to the new in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines in the BMW 7 Series and in the BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7. Two additional engine variants are available for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé from July 2020 onwards. In numerous plug-in hybrid models, the new BMW eDrive Zone function will ensure an automatic switch to purely electric operating mode when entering inner city areas such as low emission zones.

The extension of the range of standard and optional equipment features in the areas of driver assistance systems, operation and networking contributes to an increase in driving pleasure. A new display and control system will be part of the standard trim in the new BMW 3 Series from July 2020. Among other things, BMW Operating System 7 enables use of the optional BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Furthermore, in the BMW 3 Series and other model series the range of functions of the optional Driving Assistant Professional is supplemented by Active Navigation Guidance and the Emergency Lane Assistant.

Increased dynamic performance and reduced fuel consumption: 48-volt mild hybrid technology now in 51 BMW models.
From summer 2020 onwards, mild hybrid technology will be used in numerous additional BMW models to provide support and relief for the combustion engine. It consists of a 48-volt starter generator that enables particularly intensive braking energy recuperation along with an additional battery to store the electricity that is generated in this way. The 48-volt battery not only supplies the electrically operated vehicle functions, it also makes its energy available to generate additional drive power. For this purpose the current flows back to the starter generator, which now takes on the role of an electric drive. This reduces the load on the combustion engine, allowing it to run as often as possible in an efficiency-optimised load range. What is more, the generator creates an electric boost during acceleration. This instantly available additional output of 8 kW/11 hp supports dynamic power delivery during start and acceleration.

The 48-volt mild hybrid technology was first introduced in selected model variants of the BMW 5 Series in autumn 2019. This was followed by the BMW 3 Series models and several BMW X models. From July and August 2020, it will be available as standard in 37 further model variants of the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series and BMW 7 Series as well as the BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7. All in all it will ensure efficiency and dynamic performance in 51 current BMW models.

More power, less emissions: the new in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines with optimised BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology.
A new generation of in-line 6-cylinder engines will make its debut in numerous BMW model series in summer 2020. These highly efficient aluminium power units, each with a capacity of 3.0 litres, combine their extensively further developed BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology with the new 48-volt mild hybrid system, thereby achieving particularly significant progress within the context of BMW EfficientDynamics. In addition to optimised turbocharging systems, the latest version of common rail direct injection with piezo injectors ensures that both performance and efficiency are significantly increased in the new diesel engines. The injectors now transport fuel to the combustion chambers in up to ten injections per cycle and at a maximum pressure of 2,700 bar.

With maximum output increased by 15 kW/21 hp to 210 kW/286 hp, the new diesel engine for the models BMW 730d (combined fuel consumption: 4.9 – 4.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 128 – 123 g/km) and BMW 730d xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.2 – 5.0 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 138 – 133 g/km), BMW 730Ld (combined fuel consumption: 5.0 – 4.8 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 130 – 126 g/km), BMW 730Ld xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.3 – 5.1 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 139 – 133 g/km), BMW X3 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 5.6 – 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 147 – 137 g/km), BMW X4 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 5.6 – 5.1 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 146 – 136 g/km), BMW X5 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 – 5.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 164 – 150 g/km) und BMW X6 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 – 5.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 162 – 149 g/km) demonstrates a perceptibly enhanced temperament. Its particularly spontaneous power delivery is due to the multi-stage turbocharging used for the first time in this version of the in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine, along with variable turbine geometry for the low-pressure stage of the system. Increased by 30 to 650 Nm, the maximum torque of the new drive unit goes on stream at between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm – a power boost that especially results in enhanced sprint capacity. For example, the BMW 730d and the BMW 730d xDrive have improved their acceleration from zero to 100 km/h by 0.2 seconds each to 5.9 and 5.6 seconds respectively.

The new diesel engine now also used in the BMW 740d xDrive models BMW 740d xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.4 – 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 142 – 136 g/km), BMW 740Ld xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.4 – 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 143 – 137 g/km), BMW X3 M40d (combined fuel consumption: 6.0 – 5.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 157 – 148 g/km), BMW X4 M40d (combined fuel consumption: 5.9 – 5.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 156 – 147 g/km) und BMW X7 xDrive40d (combined fuel consumption: 6.6 – 6.4 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 173 – 167 g/km) generates even greater pulling power. Its multi-stage turbocharging system comprises a high-pressure and a low-pressure turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. As a result, a maximum torque of 700 Nm is delivered between 1,750 and 2,250 rpm. The engine reaches its peak output of 250 kW/340 hp at 4 400 rpm. In the BMW 740d xDrive, for example, this increased power helps achieve a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h that is also improved by 0.2 seconds to 5.0 seconds.

The two new engines are feature exhaust gas treatment technology with engine-related components consisting of a diesel oxidation catalytic converter and an SCR coating on the diesel particulate filter. For optimum reduction of nitrogen oxide (NO_X) emissions, a second dosage unit is additionally integrated at the outlet of the engine-related SCR system. As a result, the models powered by the new in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines meet the Euro 6d emissions standard.

Expansion of the model range for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé model range will be extended from July 2020 with the addition of two new engine variants. A new entry-level diesel engine and an additional all-wheel drive model variant are available for the sporty, elegant four-door model in the premium compact segment. The new BMW 218d Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 4.5 – 4.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 118 – 109 g/km) is powered by the latest version of a 4-cylinder diesel engine. The BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology in the 2.0-litre power unit now includes a two-stage turbocharging system as well as a likewise further developed common rail direct injection featuring solenoid valve injectors. The new engine delivers its maximum torque of 350 Nm between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm, reaching a maximum output of 110 kW/150 hp at 4,000 rpm. The new BMW 218d Gran Coupé accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual transmission and in 8.5 seconds with the optional 8-speed Steptronic transmission.

The second diesel engine available for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé delivers a maximum output of 140 kW/190 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. In the new BMW 220d xDrive Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 4.9 – 4.5 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 129 – 119 g/km) it is now combined with intelligent all-wheel drive and an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. This enables the new model variant to accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. Thanks to state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment including SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue injection, both new models meet the Euro 6d emissions standard.

Green light for BMW eDrive Zone: locally emissions-free travel in the city on an automated basis.
Innovative technology from the fields of electrification and digitalisation is combined in the new BMW eDrive Zone function available in the premium car manufacturer’s plug-in hybrid models. This globally unique digital service offers additional options for making optimum use of the capabilities of emissions-free driving. The BMW eDrive Zone function triggers an automatic switch to purely electric operating mode as soon as the vehicle enters selected urban areas such as low-emission zones.

BMW eDrive Zone will be a standard feature of all plug-in hybrid models of the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series and BMW 7 Series as well as the BMW X5. The digital service uses geo-fencing technology via GPS to identify designated areas. eDrive zones of this kind are currently designated in some 80 cities throughout Europe. When the service is activated, each available eDrive Zone on the navigation map is graphically highlighted in the Control Display: a message appears to inform the driver that the vehicle will automatically switch to electric driving mode as soon as it enters an eDrive Zone.

From summer 2020, the above-mentioned plug-in hybrid models will also be fitted with an integrated drive-ready sound for electric power as standard. This means that both starting and stopping the electric drive will be accompanied by a distinctive acoustic signal. In addition there has been an expansion of the range of preconditioning functions, which is also a standard feature. Depending on the equipment fitted, more functions will be available that can be activated remotely by smartphone, in addition to interior cooling and heating. In future it will also be possible to activate the seat climate control before the start of a journey, for example. In the same way it will be possible to include the seat, steering wheel, exterior mirror and rear window heating systems in the preconditioning for heating the interior, as well as heating of the cameras for the driver assistance systems.

BMW 3 Series Sedan and BMW 3 Series Touring now fitted with BMW Operating System 7 as standard.
In the new BMW 3 Series, the latest generation of the display and control system will be a standard feature as of summer 2020. Previously only used in conjunction with BMW Live Cockpit Professional, BMW Operating System 7 offers extensive individualisation and personalisation of the content shown on the Control Display. The standard BMW Live Cockpit now also includes a redesigned instrument cluster with a 5.1-inch digital display at its centre. BMW Live Cockpit Plus, like BMW Live Cockpit Professional, also includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. This digital companion enables intuitive operation of numerous vehicle functions via voice control (“Hey, BMW”). In the BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, BMW Operating System 7 will also be part of the optional BMW Live Cockpit Plus from July 2020.

The M sports seats are new to the range of optional extras for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan and the new BMW 3 Series Touring. They feature excellent lateral support, a wide range of adjustment options and headrests with embossed M logo. The M sports seats for driver and front passenger are available in conjunction with the Model M Sport equipment line as well as for the BMW M automobiles of the new BMW 3 Series. The choice of exterior colours for the new BMW 3 Series is supplemented by the variant Phytonic Blue metallic.

Increased comfort and safety: Driving Assistant Professional with additional functions.
The optional Driving Assistant Professional is a particularly comprehensive collection of driver assistance systems designed to optimise comfort and safety: it is being used by BMW to pave the way to automated driving in numerous current models. The focus is on the steering and lane guidance assistant, which will be enhanced with additional functions from summer 2020 in the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series and BMW 8 Series, in the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7, and in all variants of the BMW M5 and BMW M8.

The new Active Navigation Guidance indicates lane changes that are necessary in order to continue driving along the selected route when destination guidance is active. The driver can then carry out this operation conveniently with the aid of the lane change assistant. In addition, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function will in future include an adaptive distance control that adapts to the respective traffic situation and environmental conditions.

Further progress is also being made in the intelligent control of the Speed Limit Info system with No Passing Indicator. In all model variants of the BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series, BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, the BMW Z4, the BMW X5, the BMW X6 and the BMW X7 as well as the BMW M5, the BMW M8, the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M, road sign detection will in future additionally take into account speed limits that are restricted in time and only apply on certain days of the week. On days other, the speed limit derived from the navigation data is displayed.

BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series with optimised Integral Active Steering.
Sporty flair and ride comfort in the BMW 7 Series luxury sedans and the luxury sports cars of the BMW 8 Series benefit from Integral Active Steering. The optional suspension system combines a variable rack and pinion ratio on the front axle with selective co-steering of the rear wheels. Even at particularly low speeds of less than 3 km/h, the rear wheels are now countersteered. This gives the models of the BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series additional manoeuvrability when moving slowly in and out of parking spaces or passing through narrow gaps.

In addition, the BMW 7 Series will be available from July 2020 in the new exterior paint finish Phytonic Blue metallic and the BMW Individual paint finish Frozen Bluestone metallic. A fresh touch of luxury ambience is added to the interior with the BMW Individual leather steering wheel as well as the new version of the BMW Individual Merino full leather trim in the colour combination Smoke White/Night Blue/Black.

New body finishes for the BMW i3 and numerous other models
Another new addition to the range is the body finish in Cashmere Silver metallic, which is also available for the BMW X1. The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer will also offered in Phytonic Blue metallic and Misano Blue metallic in future.

New body finishes are available for numerous other models, too. Phytonic Blue metallic and Sunset Orange metallic versions of the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé will be on offer from July 2020. The body finish Phytonic Blue metallic will also be available for the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7 as of August 2020. What is more, the BMW X5 and BMW X6 can be fitted with the new Carbon Fibre interior trim finishers and M Carbon exterior mirror caps in conjunction with the M sports package.

The purely electrically powered models BMW i3 (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) and BMW i3s (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 14.6 – 14.0 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) will be available from summer 2020 in the new body finish Blue Ridge Mountain with accentuations in Frozen Grey metallic.

Meanwhile new BMW Individual body finishes are available for the model variants of the high-performance sports car BMW M8. For the BMW M8 Series Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 10.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 242 g/km*) and the BMW M8 Convertible (combined fuel consumption: 10.8 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 246 g/km), the Ametrin metallic variant is now newly available. For both models and for the BMW M8 Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 10.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 244 g/km), the versions Bluestone metallic, Frozen Brands Hatch Grey metallic and Frozen Motegi Red metallic are likewise available.

Munich. BMW will also be injecting many of the models not affected by its ongoing model offensive with added variety and appeal during the summer of 2019. Following the successful launch of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan, its choice of power units has now been expanded. New engines are also fitted in the BMW 8 Series Coupe, BMW 8 Series Convertible and BMW 5 Series Sedan. Elsewhere, the BMW Z4 sDrive20i (fuel consumption combined: 6.9 – 6.8 l/100 km [40.9 – 41.5 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 157 – 155 g/km) will also be available with a six-speed manual gearbox from July 2019.

The portfolio of plug-in hybrid models is also set to grow in summer 2019, thanks to additions such as the BMW 530e xDrive Sedan (petrol consumption combined: 2.2 – 2.0 l/100 km [128.4 – 141.2 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 15.4 – 15.0 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 49 – 46 g/km) with intelligent all-wheel drive. All plug-in hybrid models will now come with new battery cell technology to boost their electric range and will also feature acoustic protection for pedestrians as standard. The BMW X2 will come with LED headlights and LED foglamps as standard from July 2019. Last but not least, new optional extras, exterior paint finishes, leather variants and interior trim strips will open up further scope for customisation in many model ranges.

BMW 3 Series Sedan: additional power units, new body colours and options.

The new BMW 3 Series Sedan will serve up its distinctive brand of driving pleasure in a number of new formats from July 2019, when an ultra-sporty representative with a straight-six petrol engine and BMW xDrive, another three all-wheel-drive variants and a plug-in hybrid model are added to the line-up. As a result, customers will now have a choice of three petrol and three diesel engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid drive system. Five of the power units will combine with all-wheel drive, either as standard or optionally.

Spearheading the model range is the new BMW M340i xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 7.5 l/100 km [37.7 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 172 g/km), which is powered by a new 275 kW/374 hp six-cylinder in-line petrol engine. An eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, intelligent all-wheel drive, an M Sport differential and bespoke chassis technology combine to keep the engine’s exceptional power planted firmly on the road and deliver a supremely assured and exhilarating drive. The likewise standard sports exhaust system produces a soundtrack to match. The new BMW M340i xDrive Sedan sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds.

From July 2019, intelligent all-wheel drive will be available in combination with another three engines. The trio of models benefiting from the superior traction, directional stability and agility this brings will be the BMW 320i xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 6.3 – 5.9 l/100 km [44.84 – 47.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 143 – 134 g/km), BMW 330i xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 6.5 – 6.2 l/100 km [43.5 – 45.6 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 147 – 141 g/km) and BMW 330d xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 5.4 – 5.1 l/100 km [52.3 – 55.4 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 140 – 134 g/km).

The new BMW 330e Sedan (petrol consumption combined: 1.9 – 1.6 l/100 km [148.7 – 176.6 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 15.4 – 14.8 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 43 – 37 g/km) delivers a particularly appealing blend of driving pleasure and efficiency. The plug-in hybrid model’s four-cylinder petrol engine and electric drive unit join forces to generate system output of up to 215 kW/292 hp when the newly developed XtraBoost mode is engaged. This enables the BMW 330e Sedan to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in 6.0 seconds. At the same time, it is capable of a maximum electric range from 59 to 66 kilometres (37 – 41 miles) courtesy of state-of-the-art battery technology.

M Sport suspension will also be available for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan (with the exception of the M Sport model) from July 2019, as will Adaptive M suspension. Both the optional suspension systems combine with Variable Sport Steering.

The new BMW Individual paint finishes Citrine Black metallic, Oxide Grey metallic, Frozen Dark Grey metallic and Brilliant White metallic create extra scope for customisation. Customers will also have the option of a BMW Individual leather steering wheel and three different BMW Individual interior trim strip designs from July 2019. BMW Individual extended leather upholstery Merino and BMW Individual Merino full leather trim – which wraps the upper section of the instrument panel and the door shoulders in black fulled leather, too – will also be added to the options list. The two leather trim variants are each available in a choice of five colours. BMW Individual extended leather upholstery Merino also features as part of the first BMW Individual Composition for the sports sedan. Other items in the Composition include 19-inch BMW Individual light-alloy wheels, a BMW Individual paint finish, sports seats, the BMW Individual leather steering wheel and an anthracite BMW Individual headliner. The M Sport Individual model is another new option combining the M Sport model’s equipment features with ultra-stylish details, such as 19-inch BMW Individual light-alloy wheels, a BMW Individual exterior paint finish, BMW Individual interior trim strips, BMW Individual extended leather upholstery Merino and the BMW Individual leather steering wheel.

BMW 5 Series: new V8 engine, plug-in hybrid model now also with all-wheel drive, attractive optional extras and packages.

A generation change for the V8 engine and another plug-in hybrid model make the range of drive systems available for the BMW 5 Series even more appealing. From July 2019 the BMW M550i xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 10.0 – 9.9 l/100 km [28.25 – 28.5 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 227 – 225 g/km) will be fitted with the latest update of the eight-cylinder engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology. The new V8 has an optimised crankcase and larger turbochargers positioned in the “V” between the cylinder banks, and develops maximum output of 390 kW/530 hp plus peak torque of 750 Nm (553 lb-ft). The eight-cylinder teams up with the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, intelligent all-wheel drive and model-specific chassis technology to generate standout dynamics.

From July 2019 the latest-generation high-voltage battery will give the BMW 530e Sedan (petrol consumption combined: 1.8 – 1.6 l/100 km [156.9 – 176.6 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 14.5 – 13.6 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 41 – 36 g/km) a longer all-electric operating range. The plug-in hybrid model will now also be available with intelligent all-wheel drive. The link-up of four-cylinder petrol engine and electric drive system endow the new BMW 530e xDrive Sedan with system output of 185 kW/252 hp.

A new BMW Individual Composition will be available for all BMW 5 Series Sedan and BMW 5 Series Touring model variants from July 2019. The precisely coordinated design and equipment features for the exterior and interior include a BMW Individual paint finish and 20-inch BMW Individual light-alloy wheels, BMW Individual Exterior Line Aluminium satinated, comfort seats with active seat ventilation, BMW Individual extended leather upholstery Merino, a BMW Individual leather steering wheel, an Anthracite-coloured BMW Individual headliner, ambient lighting, a BMW Individual instrument panel in black leather and BMW Individual interior trim strips in Piano Finish Black.

BMW 8 Series: new six-cylinder in-line petrol engine, optional M Sport seats, additional paint finishes and leather trim variants.

Another engine option and four new model variants inject extra variety into the line-up of power units for the new BMW 8 Series luxury sports car. From July 2019 the BMW 8 Series Coupe and BMW 8 Series Convertible will also be offered with a new six-cylinder in-line-petrol engine developing 250 kW/340 hp. It teams up with rear-wheel drive in the new BMW 840i Coupe (fuel consumption combined: 7.3 – 7.2 l/100 km [38.7 –39.2 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 167 – 164 g/km) and new BMW 840i Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 7.5 – 7.4 l/100 km [37.7 – 38.2 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 170 – 168 g/km), and with intelligent all-wheel drive in the new BMW 840i xDrive Coupe (fuel consumption combined: 7.7 – 7.5 l/100 km [36.7 – 37.7 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 174 – 172 g/km) and new BMW 840i xDrive Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 7.8 – 7.7 l/100 km [36.2 - 36.7 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 178 – 175 g/km).

The engine line-up for the BMW 8 Series also includes a V8 option and a six-cylinder in-line diesel unit. All model variants stand out with their captivating performance attributes, which can be enjoyed in even greater richness and depth in the M Sport seats now added to the options list. As well as attention-grabbing bucket-seat contours and safety belts with accent strips in BMW M GmbH colours, the M Sport seats also feature 3D quilting, perforated central sections and bespoke stitching. Added to which, BMW 8 Series customers will also be able to specify BMW Individual full-leather appointments in eight colour variants from July 2019, plus BMW Individual fine wood interior trim strips in Black Ash Silver Effect high-gloss and Carbon Fibre.

Ultra-classy exterior paint finishes have been added to the spectrum of options available. For example, customers can now also order their BMW 8 Series Coupe or BMW 8 Series Convertible in the BMW Individual paint finish Frozen Bluestone metallic. The BMW 8 Series Convertible can also be ordered with the BMW Individual finishes Frozen Brilliant White metallic, Frozen Dark Brown metallic, Frozen Arctic Grey metallic, Frozen Dark Silver, Frozen Cashmere Silver, Pure Metal Silver, Brilliant White metallic, Tanzanite Blue metallic, Aventurine Red metallic and Almandine Brown metallic.

BMW X2: LED headlights now standard, additional light-alloy wheels, optional M Sport braking system.

The BMW X2 will come as standard from July 2019 with LED headlights with extended features. Their adaptive light distribution ensures optimum road illumination in urban areas, when turning off a road and through corners. LED front foglamps will also be part of standard specification for the compact Sports Activity Coupe. Options will include five new light-alloy wheels in 18- and 19-inch formats and two new upholstery variants.

The M Sport braking system fitted as standard on the BMW X2 M35i (fuel consumption combined: 7.1 – 6.9 l/100 km [39.8 – 40.9 mpg imp], CO2 emissions combined: 161 – 158 g/km) will now be available as an option for all other variants of the BMW X2. The Navigation option will now include an 8.8 inch Control Display with touchscreen functionality in place of the previous 6.5-inch version. And if the Navigation Plus option is specified, the display will have a screen diagonal of 10.25 inches.

BMW X3 and BMW X4: M Sport seats, new M Sport Individual equipment line.

New optional extras will be added to the range for the BMW X3 and BMW X4 in summer 2019 to give the duo yet more appeal. The Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupe will be available with the option of M Sport seats with distinct bucket-seat styling and special design features for the M Sport model, BMW X3 M40i (fuel consumption combined: 9.1 – 9.1 l/100 km [31.0 – 31.0 mpg imp], CO2 emissions combined: 207 – 206 g/km), BMW X3 M40d (fuel consumption combined: 6.5 – 6.4 l/100 km [43.5 – 44.1 mpg imp], CO2 emissions combined: 172 – 169 g/km), BMW X4 M40i (fuel consumption combined: 9.1 – 9.0 l/100 km [31.0 – 31.4 mpg imp], CO2 emissions combined: 206 – 205 g/km) and BMW X4 M40d (fuel consumption combined: 6.6 – 6.4 l/100 km [42.8 – 44.1 mpg imp], CO2 emissions combined: 173 – 170 g/km), as well as with additional interior trim strip variants.

The new M Sport Individual model available for the BMW X3 and BMW X4 from August 2019 brings together a number of high-quality touches that add to their dynamic prowess, while also giving them an even more stylish and exclusive aura. The equipment features of the M Sport model are combined with highlights such as a BMW Individual paint finish, 21-inch BMW Individual light-alloy wheels, BMW Individual extended leather upholstery Merino and BMW Individual interior trim strips in Piano Finish Black.

BMW X5 and BMW X7: new power units, plus more exterior paint finishes, light-alloy wheels and leather trim variants.

The choice of power units for the new BMW X5 will be expanded with the addition of a new entry-level engine in the form of a four-cylinder diesel available for the Sports Activity Vehicle from August 2019. The two-litre engine in the new BMW X5 xDrive25d (fuel consumption combined: 6.2 – 5.7 l/100 km [45.6 – 49.6 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 162 – 150 g/km) develops maximum output of 170 kW/231 hp and peak torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) with the help of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology comprising multi-stage turbocharging and common-rail direct injection. The efficient diesel engine teams up with the eight-speed Steptronic transmission and xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system. The engine’s emission control system includes an SCR catalyst for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions, helping the new BMW X5 xDrive25d to satisfy the requirements of the Euro 6d-TEMP emissions norm.

The summer of 2019 will also see the launch of another exceptionally efficient version of the Sports Activity Vehicle in the form of the BMW X5 xDrive45e (petrol consumption combined: 2.0 – 1.7 l/100 km [141.2 – 166.2 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 23.5 – 20.3 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 47 – 39 g/km). This plug-in hybrid model is powered by a combination of a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine and an electric motor, which together generate system output of 290 kW/394 hp. The second-generation BMW X5 with electrified powertrain accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.6 seconds. The BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system is on hand to deliver sporty driving pleasure on the road and supremely assured performance off it by distributing the drive power from both engine and motor to all four wheels. The latest battery cell technology on board the new X5 xDrive45e helps it to cover distances of up to 80 kilometres (50 miles) on electric power alone.

Customers will also enjoy an even wider choice of optional extras. The body colour Manhattan metallic, 22-inch M light-alloy wheels in twin-spoke design, the BMW Individual Alcantara headliner in Anthracite or Ivory White and BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim with extended features will all be added to the BMW X5 options list from August 2019.

New options are being made available for the new BMW X7, too. From August 2019, it will be possible to upgrade the cabin of the luxury segment’s first ever Sports Activity Vehicle with BMW Individual Merino full leather trim in three different colours and a BMW Individual headliner in Anthracite or Ivory White Alcantara. The palette of colours for the exterior will now expand to include the Manhattan metallic shade and BMW Individual paint finishes Tanzanite Blue metallic and Ametrine metallic. And the BMW X7 can likewise now be specified with BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim with extended features.

BMW Z4: entry-level engine now also available with manual gearbox.

The 145 kW/197 hp four-cylinder petrol engine in the BMW Z4 sDrive20i (fuel consumption combined: 6.9 – 6.8 l/100 km [40.9 – 41.5 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 157 – 155 g/km) will be partnered by a six-speed manual gearbox as standard from July 2019. The entry-level version of the open-top sports car will also be optionally available with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission.

Plug-in hybrid models with new battery cell technology and acoustic protection for pedestrians.

From summer 2019, the new BMW 330e Sedan, new BMW 530e Sedan, new BMW 530e xDrive Sedan and new BMW X5 xDrive45e will be joined in the line-up of plug-in hybrid models boasting the very latest battery cell technology by the new BMW 225xe Active Tourer (petrol consumption combined: 2.1 – 1.9 l/100 km [134.5 – 148.7 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 14.2 – 13.5 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 47 – 42 g/km) and the BMW 7 Series luxury sedan models with electrified powertrains. The newly developed high-voltage batteries further increase efficiency at the same time as boosting the electric range.

From summer 2019, all plug-in hybrid models will be equipped with acoustic protection for pedestrians as standard. When driving on electric power, an unmistakable sound specially created for electrified BMW models is generated using a system of speakers. The sound produced at low speeds has been designed to announce the car’s presence acoustically without affecting acoustic comfort for its occupants.

New optional extra: BMW Drive Recorder - for the Belgian market only.

The BMW Drive Recorder is another new addition to the options list. It can be ordered in conjunction with Parking Assistant Plus and is available for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan, BMW 7 Series, BMW 8 Series, new BMW X5 and new BMW X7. The BMW Drive Recorder uses the cameras of the various driver assistance systems to record video footage from different points around the vehicle, before saving the recordings so they can be either watched later on the Control Display when the car is stationary or exported via the USB port.

Drivers can therefore shoot videos while driving through spectacular scenery, for example, or performing impressive manoeuvres on the race track, and then send them to their mobile device and share them. Recordings can be up to 40 seconds in length, comprising the 20 seconds of video saved immediately prior to the Drive Recorder being activated and the next 20 seconds. The Drive Recorder can be started at any time from the iDrive menu. Another benefit of the system is that, in the event of a collision, the 20 seconds before the accident and the 20 seconds following it are automatically recorded and saved, so they can be referred back to in any subsequent reconstruction of the incident.

Met de naam BMW M5 en aangedreven door de 6-cilinder-in-lijn benzinemotor van de BMW M1 begon het nieuwe model aan een indrukwekkende carrière. En daarin is nu de BMW M5 Competition (verbruik: 10,5l/100 km en CO₂-emissie van 238 g/km) het hoogtepunt.

De BMW M5 is ‘s werelds succesvolste high-performance sportsedan, die zijn onweerstaanbare aantrekkingskracht ontleent aan de expertise van BMW M GmbH, vergaard in de racerij. Ter ere van het 35-jarige jubileum van de BMW M5 presenteert BMW M GmbH een speciale uitvoering: de BMW M5 ‘Edition 35 Jahre’. Die is voorzien van de krachtigste motor uit de historie van het model, met een vermogen van 460 kW (625 pk), en talloze opwindende design- en uitrustingsdetails. Deze speciale uitvoering wordt geproduceerd in een beperkte oplage van wereldwijd 350 stuks en is vanaf juli dit jaar leverbaar. Twee voertuigen zijn bestemd voor de Belgische en Luxemburgse markt.

Jubileumuitvoering met exclusieve BMW Individual onderdelen.
Het M gevoel en het exclusieve karakter van de high-performance sedan komt met extra intensiteit tot leven in de BMW M5 ‘Edition 35 Jahre’. Het uitgangspunt voor deze uitvoering is de BMW M5 Competition, waarvan de raceauto-achtige prestaties een nieuwe dimensie geven aan de sedan. Dat is te danken aan de V8-motor met M TwinPower Turbo techniek, het vermogen van 460 kW (625 pk) en het maximumkoppel van 750 Nm, gecombineerd met de bijzonder snelle reacties van de motor op het gaspedaal, het extra sportief afgestemde onderstel, de vierwielaandrijving M xDrive en het actieve M differentieel achter.

Het rijplezier dat de BMW M5 Competition biedt, kenmerkt zich door een krachtige acceleratie, optimale tractie, uitzonderlijke stabiliteit en wegligging. De controle over de auto is te allen tijde volledig. De BMW M5 Competition accelereert vanuit stilstand in 3,3 seconden naar 100 km/u en in 10,8 seconden naar 200 km/u.

Uiterlijk en interieur van de BMW M5 ‘Edition 35 Jahre’ zijn even indrukwekkend als de prestaties. Vooral de hoogwaardige M designelementen die speciaal voor het jubileummodel zijn ontwikkeld en de BMW Individual onderdelen verlenen de auto de status van een exclusief collectors item. Zijn opvallende uiterlijk komt optimaal tot zijn recht in de speciale BMW Individual carrosseriekleur Frozen Dark Grey II metallic. Die kleur is voorzien van een speciale pigmentatie die zorgt voor een zijdematte uitstraling. Nieuwe 20 inch lichtmetalen M wielen in Y-spaak styling, uitgevoerd in de kleur Graphite Grey, zijn exclusief voor het jubileummodel. Verder zijn de remklauwen van het standaard M compound remsysteem uitgevoerd in hoogglans zwart. Het M carbon-keramische remsysteem is optioneel ook leverbaar met goudkleurige remklauwen.

Als aanvulling op de multifunctionele M stoelen en de BMW Individual Merino vollederuitrusting in zwart met beige contraststiksel krijgt het interieur extra flair met interieurlijsten in goud geanodiseerd aluminium met carbonstructuur – een nouveauté. De oppervlakken met een fijne structuur schitteren exclusief subtiel. De lijsten zijn te zien rond het instrumentenpaneel, op de portierbekleding en op de middenconsole. De instaplijsten met de inscriptie M5 ‘Edition 35 Jahre’ en een gelaserde gravure met de tekst “M5 ‘Edition 35 Jahre’ 1/350” op de deksel van de bekerhouder in de middenconsole zijn twee bijzondere kenmerken van de jubileumuitvoering.

De BMW M5: al 35 jaar toonaangevend in zijn segment.
Met zijn technologie en design belichaamt de BMW M5 ‘Edition 35 Jahre’ de filosofie achter het concept van de high-performance sedan. De motor, de transmissie, de wielophanging en het design van de BMW M5 vormen al vanaf het begin een perfect pakket. Een lineaire vermogensafgifte over een breed toerenbereik is evengoed een kenmerk van de M5. Dat geldt ook voor zijn wendbare, maar veilige weggedrag, zijn circuitwaardige rijdynamiek en zijn stijlvolle, subtiele uiterlijk.

De eerste generatie van de BMW M5 zag er onopvallend uit, uiterlijk week deze ultieme sportsedan nauwelijks af van de basisversie. De 6-cilinder-in-lijn benzinemotor, afkomstig uit de BMW M1 maar licht gemodificeerd, had een vermogen van 210 kW (286 pk) – 7 kW (9 pk) meer dan het vermogen van de legendarische BMW M1 sportauto met middenmotor – dankzij de geoptimaliseerde digitale motorelektronica.

“Het onderstel moet altijd meer snelheid aankunnen dan de motor levert”, was destijds het uitgangspunt voor de auto’s van BMW M. Daarom was de BMW M5 voorzien van een straffer sportonderstel en een krachtiger remsysteem, in combinatie met een versterkte vijfversnellingsbak en een achterdifferentieel met 25 procent spereffect.

De tweede generatie van de BMW M5 oogde stijlvol en bood een vermogen van 232 kW (315 pk); vanaf 1992 was het vermogen 250 kW (340 pk). De auto was nu voorzien van bijvoorbeeld niveauregeling op de achterwielophanging, ter versterking van de kenmerkende balans tussen een fenomenale wegligging als die van een raceauto en subliem comfort voor alledaags gebruik.

De derde generatie van de BMW M5 verscheen in 1998 en die was voorzien van de nu typerende twee dubbele uitlaten – de eerste subtiele indicatie van het hoge prestatieniveau van de motor in dit model. De V8-motor in deze BMW M5 - met 294 kW (400 pk) had veel koeling nodig en daarom was de voorzijde van de auto voorzien van grote luchtinlaten.

De vierde generatie van de BMW M5 had een indrukwekkende V10-motor. Deze krachtbron was afgeleid van een Formule 1-motor en leverde een vermogen van 373 kW (507 pk). De V10 gaf het hoogtoerige concept van de M motoren een nieuwe dimensie dankzij een maximum toerental van meer dan 8000 toeren per minuut en een bijzonder indrukwekkend geluid.

Met de terugkeer van de V8-motor in de vijfde generatie van de BMW M5, in 2011, introduceerde BMW ook turbotechniek. Twee turbo’s tussen de cilinderbanken en een cross-bank uitlaatspruitstuk zijn de hoogtepunten van deze hoogtoerige krachtbron met een vermogen van 412 kW (560 pk). Andere kenmerken waren een 7-traps transmissie met dubbele koppeling en een Active Differential Lock in de achterwielaandrijving.

Het zesde en nieuwste hoofdstuk in het succesverhaal van de BMW M5 gaat opnieuw uit van een V8-motor. Deze nieuwe krachtbron heeft nog meer vermogen: 441 kW (600 pk) en in de BMW M5 Competition – de basis voor de ‘Edition 35 Jahre’ - zelfs 460 kW (625 pk). Voor het eerst zorgt het intelligente vierwielaandrijvingssysteem BMW M xDrive er in de BMW M5 voor dat het motorvermogen met maximale efficiëntie wordt overgebracht op het wegdek. Daarmee biedt de BMW M5 een geheel nieuw niveau van rijdynamiek en kan de bestuurder de nieuwste en krachtigste BMW M5 eenvoudig onder controle houden – zelfs bij een sportieve rijstijl en met groot vermogen.

BMW presenteert de nieuwe generatie van de sportberline net als een hele reeks nieuwe modellen tijdens het autosalon in Parijs. Dit internationale autofestival opent de deuren op 2 oktober 2018.

The new BMW M5 Competition high-performance sedan (fuel consumption combined: 10.8 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 246 – 243 g/km)* brings together exceptional performance and a suitably rarefied aura with the unruffled ease in everyday use for which BMW M models are renowned. A 19 kW/25 hp hike in engine output over the standard version of the new BMW M5 (to 460 kW/625 hp), even more direct responses and bespoke chassis tuning ensure a race-inspired driving experience at all times.

The market launch of the new BMW M5 Competition heralds the creation of a new product category. In future, BMW M GmbH will offer the most powerful variants of its high-performance cars as standalone models.

The engine: more power and a distinctive brand of performance.

The performance-driving experience that defines the character of the new BMW M5 Competition has a deep emotional richness – and is rooted in the distinctive way its engine goes about its business. The 4.4-litre V8 unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology now produces maximum output of 460 kW/625 hp at 6,000 rpm. Peak torque is 750 Newton metres (553 lb-ft) and can be enjoyed across an extremely wide rev range – from 1,800 to 5,800 rpm (i.e. a 200-rpm wider band than in the standard version of the new BMW M5).

The high-revving instincts of the eight-cylinder engine are therefore harnessed to give the new BMW M5 Competition imposing levels of thrust. The car’s unique power delivery makes its presence felt in reducing the Competition’s 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time to 3.3 seconds. Furthermore,
0 – 200 km/h (124 mph) is over in 10.8 seconds – 0.3 seconds quicker than in the standard version of the new M5.

Standard specification for the new BMW M5 Competition includes a model-specific M Sport exhaust system with tailpipe embellishers in black chrome. This version of the twin-pipe, flap-controlled exhaust generates a strikingly prominent soundtrack. Meanwhile, the addition of a particulate filter to the Competition’s armoury enables a further reduction in emissions.

Specially designed engine mounts optimise responsiveness and cornering characteristics.

The new BMW M5 Competition features model-specific engine mounting, which also has a noticeable impact on its performance abilities. The engine mounts have modified characteristics and an increased spring rate, and the drive unit’s firmer connection to the vehicle’s structure results in even more direct engine response and immediate transmission of its power to the drivetrain. The car also turns into corners with noticeably greater directness and precision on account of the mounting’s stiffer characteristics.

Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive.

The task of relaying the new BMW M5 Competition’s engine power is again handled by the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. Three different modes offering a choice of efficient, sporty or ultra-dynamic driving can be activated using the Drivelogic rocker switch on the gear selector.

Having made its debut in the standard version of the new BMW M5, the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system now also feeds the further increased power of the BMW M5 Competition onto the road with poise, assurance and thrilling alacrity. It generates just enough extra traction to achieve acceleration times worthy of a super-sports car. The centrally controlled interaction between M xDrive and the Active M Differential is largely responsible for channelling the engine’s remarkable output to the car’s wheels without any loss of power en route. The rear-biased setup of the M xDrive system is another contributory factor in the tremendous agility of the high-performance sedan. Plus, a rear-wheel-drive-only setting (2WD) allows experienced and skilled drivers to revel in the experience offered by past generations of the BMW M5 – i.e. handling in its purest form, with no control systems holding the car back.

Individually tuned chassis for the ultimate in precision and performance.

Like every BMW M car, the new BMW M5 Competition is equipped with chassis technology matched perfectly to the performance characteristics of its engine. The associated modifications ensure precisely controllable handling at all times, even in extremely dynamic driving situations. As well as lowering the vehicle by seven millimetres, the model-specific chassis tuning also includes judicious tweaks to the wheel suspension, springs and dampers.

The increased camber at the front axle enhances the car’s ability to absorb lateral forces through high-speed corners. Fitting the toe links with ball joints instead of rubber mounts has resulted in even more precise wheel guidance at the rear axle. And the rear anti-roll bar also has a firmer spring rate. The front axle of the new BMW M5 Competition is equipped with a newly designed mounting for the anti-roll bar. Making the springs at the front and rear axles ten per cent stiffer than on the standard version of the new BMW M5 has produced a firmer ride, which also has a positive impact on steering response. Plus, shorter auxiliary springs reduce fluctuation in wheel loads, as does the unique tuning of the damper hydraulics. Consequently, the direct connection with the chassis can also be clearly felt in Comfort mode. Selecting Sport mode activates the damper settings perfected for testing on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit, while Sport Plus lends itself to ultra-dynamic driving on grand prix tracks.

Standard specification for the new BMW M5 Competition includes exclusive M light-alloy wheels sporting a Y-spoke design in a bi-colour finish. The 20-inch forged wheels are shod with mixed-size tyres measuring 275/35 R 20 at the front and 285/35 R 20 at the rear.

Exclusive and highly expressive design features.

The exclusive feel of the new BMW M5 Competition is further enhanced by a selection of other model-specific design features. BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim is complemented by the use of discreetly sporty high-gloss black for the kidney grille surround, the decorative mesh of the signature BMW M gills in the front side panels, the trim for the rear bumper covering and the exterior mirror caps. Another special feature are the door openers, which are painted fully in the body colour. The rear spoiler and “M5” boot lid badge – which gains “Competition” lettering – also come in high-gloss black.

Inside the car, an understated stripe design in BMW M GmbH colours for the seat belts, plus floor mats with special piping and “M5” logo, point to the exclusive character of the new BMW M5 Competition. A further identifying feature is the “M Competition” graphic that appears in the instrument cluster to greet the driver when it is starting up.

A special MotoGP season gets underway for BMW M GmbH at the “Losail International Circuit” in Qatar this weekend (16^th to 18^th March): it is BMW M’s 20^th season as “Official Car of MotoGP”. BMW and BMW M GmbH have been involved as partners of MotoGP organiser Dorna Sports since 1999. Activities are focussed on providing the safety car fleet. In the 2018 anniversary season, the fleet will be headed by the new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car. BMW M GmbH will provide a total of seven BMW M high-performance cars this year to ensure the safety of the race events.

The fleet of safety and official cars has always consisted of the latest BMW M models, optimised for use on the racetrack. Celebrating the 20^th anniversary, BMW M GmbH remains true with this philosophy and sets a real highlight with the new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car.

The new course car is based on the high-performance sedan BMW M5 (combined consumption: 10.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 241 g/km)*, which was showcased to the global public for the first time in August 2017. The BMW M5’s technical features ensure perfect handling, even at the limits of driving dynamics. These features include the newly-developed M-specific all-wheel drive M xDrive, which is being used in the BMW M5 for the first time. The 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology represents another significant increase in performance compared to previous models, with 441 kW/600 HP and maximum torque of 750 Nm in the production M5. Painstaking manual work at the BMW M Manufaktur in Garching converted the high-performance base car into the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car, preparing it to appear as the course car in MotoGP.

In the 2018 season, the fleet of official MotoGP vehicles includes a total of seven different BMW M high-performance cars. Alongside the new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car the BMW M3 Safety Car will also be in action. BMW M GmbH will provide the Safety Officer and the Race Director with a BMW M4 Coupé Safety Car with water injection and a BMW M2 Safety Car. In addition, the BMW X5 M Medical Car will take to the track this season and a BMW M6 Gran Coupé Safety Car also stands ready to be in action. Two BMW S 1000 RR, which BMW Motorrad provides as safety bikes, complete the 2018 safety car fleet.

Among the many other activities that make up BMW M GmbH’s commitment to MotoGP is the BMW M Award, which will be presented for the 16^th time in 2018. This award is presented at the end of each MotoGP season to the rider with the best overall result in qualifying.

The new BMW M5 (combined fuel consumption: 10.5 l/100 km*; combined CO2 emissions: 241 g/km*) is in record fever: on 11 December 2017, instructor Johan Schwartz performed a sustained drift at the BMW Performance Center in Greer, South Carolina, in the new BMW M5, covering exactly 232.5 miles (374.2 kilometres) on a so-called skid pad, thereby setting a new GUINESS WORLD RECORD for the longest drift in eight hours. Schwartz shattered the previous record by 143 miles (230.1 kilometres).

A custom-built refuelling system developed by BMW in collaboration with the North Carolina-based company Detroit Speed made it possible to drift continuously without a break for the full eight hours as required by the GUINESS WORLD RECORDS. This enabled the BMW M5 to be refuelled during the drift in the same way that fighter jets can refuel in mid-flight – though in this case the operation was performed by hand: a second BMW M5 driven by the Chief Driving Instructor of the BMW Performance Center, Matt Mullins, accompanied the record-breaking M5. Mullins adapted to Schwartz's drifting speed, allowing Matt Butts of Detroit Speed to carrying out the refuelling operation, secured by a safety tether that permitted him to straddle the space between the two moving vehicles by leaning out of the rear window of the second car.

“Although we practised the refuelling several times before the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title attempt, there was very little margin for error,” said Butts. “We’re very excited to have played a part in Johan and BMW recapturing this record.”

A second GUINESS WORLD RECORD was awarded for the longest twin vehicle water-assisted drift: Schwartz and Mullins drifted together for one hour, covering a total of 49.25 miles (79.3 kilometres).

Munich. The new BMW M5 (combined fuel consumption: 10.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 241 g/km*) demonstrated its outstanding driving properties and the perfect combination of luxury and sportiness at the “Shanghai International Circuit”. BMW works driver Bruno Spengler set a new lap record for a four-door production saloon, clocking a time of 2:22.828 minutes at the Formula 1 circuit on the outskirts of the Chinese metropolis.

Although Spengler was making his first appearance at the circuit, and the conditions were not ideal on the cold and damp track, the 2012 DTM champion smashed the previous record by five seconds. The BMW M5, which Spengler had at his disposal for his record-breaking drive, was a production model without any modifications for the racetrack. This underlines BMW M’s philosophy of producing road-going vehicles which you can take to the track at any time.

“Besides power and torque, I suppose the secret of this car is its excellent balance,” said Spengler, whose DTM career includes 15 race wins and 48 podiums so far. “It’s very agile and responsive, and the increased traction with the four wheel drive makes this car very easy to drive. It is also lighter than the previous generation, which plays an important role on a track like this.”

At the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, BMW is now presenting a further highlight: a comprehensive range of exclusive M Performance Parts for the BMW M5. All of these components from the M Performance Parts accessory range were developed using BMW M motorsport know-how and are perfectly harmonised with each other. They not only underscore the high-performance sedan’s sporty and luxurious appearance, but also fulfil functional requirements in terms of aerodynamics, cooling and lightweight construction. Most of these exclusive M Performance Parts for the BMW M5 will be available as retrofit components when the vehicle is launched to the market in March 2018, with further products following in July 2018.

Aerodynamics in perfection. The numerous highlights featured in the accessory range developed especially for the BMW M5 include the package comprising M Performance aerodynamics components. All of these parts are made from lightweight carbon fibre and are elaborately handcrafted.

The following aerodynamics components are available: a newly designed front attachment, side sill attachments, a carbon fibre rear spoiler, a carbon fibre rear spoiler Pro (**) and a rear diffuser. The new BMW M Performance sports exhaust system, which will be on sale exclusively in the USA and Canada, guarantees an emotional motorsport sound. Optimised exhaust gas routing with reduced counter-pressure enhances the beefy V8 TwinTurbo sound and underscores the sporty driving experience.

The M Performance Drive Analyser, also derived from motorsport, is an innovative tool for recording and evaluating all important vehicle dynamics data. The system offers comprehensive, professional possibilities to record and analyse, which can be evaluated and displayed on the smartphone. The Drive Analyser determines a variety of relevant indicators such as diverse engine data, speed and peak values, engaged gear, use of accelerator pedal and brakes as well as lateral acceleration. When established, the results can be directly shown on the smartphone as videos or graphic representations via the M Performance Drive Analyser App, which is available free of charge to BMW customers. Furthermore, customers also wishing to capture their drive on film, BMW M Performance Parts offers the Trackfix action camera holder, which can be mounted in the threaded bush of the towing lug either at the front or rear end of the vehicle.

Sporty, dynamic appearance down to the finest detail.

M Performance Parts for the BMW M5 M bring that true racetrack feeling to everyday life – also in terms of visual presence. These include motorsport stripes in typical M colours, which highlight the car’s sporty design even further and lend it its very own individual character. Hence, BMW and Electronic Arts presented the new BMW M5 for the first time at the Gamescom in Cologne, Europe’s largest fair for interactive games and entertainment. In “Need for Speed ^TM Payback” (release: 10 November 2017), gamers are, as in reality, able to refine their virtual BMW M5 with M Performance Parts that have been developed specifically for this car. The features in question include the newly-developed M-specific all-wheel drive M xDrive, which is being used in the BMW M5 for the first time. With precise handling and perfect traction, this guarantees optimised driving dynamics in all manner of situations. The heart of the BMW M5, the 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, has been completely overhauled by the M engineers. It represents another significant increase in performance compared to previous models, with 441 kW/600 HP and maximum torque of 750 Nm in the production M5. The new BMW M5 only needs 3.4 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. Transmission is provided by the new eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox with Drivelogic. The chassis contains M-specific kinematics and elastokinematics elements that contribute to optimised driving dynamics. The weight also plays an important role in performance. This has been reduced further through features such as the lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof.

Painstaking manual work at the BMW M Manufaktur in Garching converted the high-performance base car into the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car, preparing it to appear as the course car in the world’s fastest motorcycle racing series. This process included the addition of numerous BMW M Performance Parts, many of which are available as retrofit parts for the BMW M5 production model. These emphasise the sporty appearance of the Safety Car and meet all the functional requirements for aerodynamics, cooling and lightweight construction. These include various carbon components such as side sills, rear diffusor, rear spoiler, front kidney grille, door mirror caps and air breather slats. The BMW M Performance sport exhaust system is made of titanium, with carbon exhaust tips, and has been designed specially for use on the racetrack.

The transformation of the BMW M5 to a MotoGP Safety Car was completed by the inclusion of special racing features and the necessary safety equipment. The front splitter is a prototype developed specifically for the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car. The bonnet latches are taken directly from racing. The bucket seats from the BMW M4 GTS guarantee a combination of comfort and maximum security for their occupants when being in action on the racetrack. The flat light bar on the roof uses modern LED technology. It is controlled via a specially-developed cockpit panel. Another important signalling system is provided by the flashing front lights, consisting of blue LED lamps in the front grills and flashing corona rings for the headlamps.

The design of the new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Cars also makes a clear racing statement: it is inspired by the design of the new BMW M8 GTE race car, which will compete for BMW at the 24 Hours of Le Mans next year. Series developers from BMW M and the BMW Motorsport department worked hand in hand on development of the BMW M8 GTE. The design reflects this close cooperation.

The partnership between the BMW M GmbH and Dorna Sports dates back to 1999. The provision of the BMW M fleet is the core of the involvement as “Official Car of MotoGP”. De nieuwe BMW M5 (gecombineerd brandstofverbruik: 10,5 l/100 km*; gecombineerde CO2-uitstoot: 241 g/km*) brengt BMW M GmbH op nieuw terrein, met voor het eerst M xDrive vierwielaandrijving in de highperformance-berline. Met deze nieuwe aanpak verkent de M5 nieuwe dynamische dimensies en biedt hij in alle rijomstandigheden nog meer dagelijkse functionaliteit. De nieuwe wagen is een voortzetting van de traditie van een concept – de luxueuze vierdeurs businessberline met een voorliefde voor de racepiste – voor het eerst onthuld in 1984 met de originele BMW M5.

De nieuwe M xDrive die door BMW M GmbH werd ontwikkeld, is de meest imponerende vierwielaandrijving die ooit in het highperformance-segment werd aangeboden. Ze werkt met een centrale transferbak met meervoudige plaatkoppeling en verdeelt de aandrijfkracht naar behoefte volledig variabel tussen de voor- en achterwielen. Een ander onderdeel in de superieure tractie van de wagen in alle weg- en weersomstandigheden is het Actieve M Differentieel op de achteras, dat eveneens volledig variabel werkt en een grendeleffect tussen 0 en 100 procent heeft.

Het karakter van M xDrive kan naar wens worden ingesteld. De bestuurder heeft de keuze uit vijf verschillende configuraties op basis van de combinaties van de DSC-modi (DSC aan, MDM, DSC uit) en M xDrive-modi (4WD, 4WD Sport, 2WD). In de basisinstelling met DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) ingeschakeld en 4WD laat het systeem bij het versnellen uit bochten een lichte slip van de achterwielen toe – en draagt zo bij tot de sportieve wendbaarheid van de nieuwe BMW M5. In de M Dynamic mode (MDM, 4WD Sport) laat M xDrive ook gemakkelijk te controleren drifts toe. De drie M xDrive-modi met DSC uit werden ontworpen om enthousiaste chauffeurs op hun wenken te bedienen en zijn voornamelijk bedoeld voor gebruik op het circuit. Hier heeft de bestuurder de keuze uit drie configuraties tot en met pure achterwielaandrijving (2WD). In deze modus kan de bestuurder zijn eigen drifthoek kiezen en worden kenners verwend met rijdynamiek in haar puurste vorm.

Een V8 bi-turbomotor van 4,4 liter met M TwinPower Turbo-technologie biedt ruim voldoende vermogen voor de nieuwe BMW M5. De M ingenieurs hebben aanzienlijke vernieuwingen aan de krachtbron van het uitgaande model aangebracht. Zo zorgen bijvoorbeeld de nieuw ontwikkelde turbocompressoren, uiterst efficiënte laadluchtkoeling en een verhoogde brandstofinjectiedruk samen voor meer vermogen en vooral meer koppel. De motor levert een vermogen van 441 kW/600 pk bij 5.600 – 6.700 t/min, terwijl een monumentaal koppel van 750 Nm beschikbaar is van een lage 1.800 t/min, helemaal tot 5.600 t/min. Een kenveldgestuurde, volledig variabele oliepomp zorgt ervoor dat de nieuwe BMW M5 olie krijgt als en wanneer hij die nodig heeft, zelfs op de racepiste. De indrukwekkende prestatiecijfers van de wagen spreken voor zich: 0 tot 100 km/u in slechts 3,4 seconden, 0 tot 200 km/u in 11,1 seconden. De topsnelheid blijft echter elektronisch beperkt tot 250 km/u, maar het als optie verkrijgbare M Driver’s Package voert de pret op tot 305 km/u.

De nieuwe BMW M5 kanaliseert al die kracht door een speciaal afgestelde 8-traps M versnellingsbak Steptronic met Drivelogic. In de D-modus biedt hij alle comfort en gerieflijkheid van een volledige automatische versnellingsbak, maar kan hij ook op sequentieel manueel schakelen worden omgeschakeld. De bestuurder kan dit met ofwel de compacte keuzehendel op de middenconsole ofwel met de schakelpaddles aan het stuur. Met Drivelogic kan de bestuurder de karakteristieken van de transmissie op zijn eigen voorkeur afstemmen. Op de racepiste schakelt de 8-traps M versnellingsbak Steptronic bliksemsnel, wat de nieuwe BMW M5 zijn uitzonderlijke soepelheid en dynamische flair verleent. De ophanging van de nieuwe BMW M5 is al evenzeer ontworpen voor zowel maximale tractie in het dagelijks verkeer als extreme dynamische prestaties op het circuit. Net als de motor, de transmissie en het M xDrive-systeem werd ze door specialisten en racepiloten afgesteld op circuits waaronder het meest veeleisende testterrein ter wereld – het Nordschleife-circuit van de Nürburgring. Geavanceerde verstevigingselementen in de voor- en achterstructuren maken de koetswerkstructuur extreem stijf, waardoor de wagen ogenblikkelijk feedback geeft, vooral wanneer de bestuurder het gaspedaal diep indrukt op de weg of het circuit.

De bestuurder kan ook kiezen tussen de modi Comfort, Sport en Sport Plus voor de Variable Damper Control (VDC) – met specifieke M afstelling – en de M Servotronic stuurinrichting. En de karakteristieken van de motor kunnen ook naar wens van de bestuurder worden geconfigureerd via de modi Efficient, Sport en Sport Plus. Met de twee toetsen M1 en M2 op het lederen M stuur kunnen twee instellingen worden opgeslagen, met de gecombineerde voorkeur van de bestuurder voor motor, transmissie, ophanging en de M xDrive-modi, de DSC-modus en de instellingen van het Head-Up-Display. De bestuurder kan de instelling van zijn voorkeur dan inschakelen door op de overeenkomstige toets te drukken.

Ook het koetswerk van de BMW M5 werd herzien ten opzichte van de gewone BMW 5 Reeks om zijn uitdagende dynamische ambities waar te maken. De M ingenieurs hebben de bredere zijpanelen aan de voorkant en de bekleding van de voorbumper aangepast met grotere openingen voor de luchttoevoer naar de koelsystemen en de remmen. Ook nieuw is de achterdiffusor. De vier uitlaatpijpen van het uitlaatsysteem zijn een zichtbare verwijzing naar de kracht die de BMW M5 opwekt, en leveren ook een passend geluidsdecor, met dank aan de klepsturing. De bestuurder kan het motorgeluid met een toets naar wens aanpassen.

De motorkap, eveneens met een specifieke M vormgeving, is van aluminium gemaakt en getooid met opvallende sculptuurlijnen. Die lopen door tot in het uiterst lichte dak van met koolstofvezel versterkte kunststof (CFRP) – standaarduitrusting voor de nieuwe M5. De gewichtsbesparing door het dak van CFRP en andere componenten zoals het uitlaatsysteem dragen ertoe bij dat de nieuwe BMW M5 met M xDrive vierwielaandrijving lichter is dan zijn voorganger.

De nieuwe BMW M5 is standaard uitgerust met M compound-remmen, die lichter zijn dan de gebruikelijke remmen van grijs gietijzer en dus eveneens het gewicht van de wagen terugdringen. Met blauwgelakte vaste remklauwen met zes zuigers vooraan en zwevende remklauwen met enkele zuiger achteraan, plus geperforeerde, geventileerde remschijven rondom beschikken de M compound-remmen over een afremmend vermogen dat bij het dynamische potentieel van de wagen past. De als optie verkrijgbare carbon-keramische remmen, die herkenbaar zijn aan de goudgelakte remklauwen en nog eens 23 kilogram van het gewicht van de M5 afnemen, zijn tegen nog meer rijplezier bestand.

De nieuwe BMW M5 wordt standaard geleverd met gepolijste lichtmetalen velgen van 19" (vooraan: 9,5 x 19, achteraan: 10,5 x 19) in Orbit Grey en specifieke M banden (vooraan: 275/40 R 19, achteraan: 285/40 R 19). Velgen van 20" zijn als optie verkrijgbaar (vooraan: 275/35 R 20 banden op velgen van 9,5 x 20, achteraan: 285/35 R 20 banden op velgen van 10,5 x 20). Tot de standaarduitrusting van de nieuwe BMW M5 behoren ook leder Merino en elektrisch verstelbare M zetels. De optielijst omvat nieuw ontwikkelde multifunctionele M zetels, die uitmunten door hun kuipzetelconstructie en nog betere zijsteun.

De nieuwe BMW M5 kan vanaf september 2017 worden besteld met levering vanaf de lente van 2018. De basisprijs voor de Belux markt wordt later bekend gemaakt. De marktintroductie van de BMW M5 First Edition is gepland op dezelfde datum als voor de verkoopstart van de standaard M5. The new BMW M5 (fuel consumption combined: 10.5 l/100 km [26.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 241 g/km) is the most exciting and emotionally enthralling high-performance sedan from this model range ever released by BMW M. The sixth generation of this fantastically sporty machine will be launched in 2017 complete with the M xDrive system, whose all-wheel-drive technology enables the business sedan’s dynamic prowess to be experienced in even greater depth. Quite apart from its notably enhanced performance, the new BMW M5 also boasts far greater everyday practicality and supreme poise. It therefore constitutes another evolutionary step in every respect for an exceedingly successful vehicle concept that first emerged in 1984 with the launch of the original BMW M5.

A superior drivetrain: M xDrive.

High-performance driving dynamics on the one hand paired with the everyday practicality and qualities of a business sedan on the other: this neatly sums up M’s traditional approach to model development – one which strives to harmonise individual drive components into a flawless whole.

“The core component of M xDrive is a central intelligence unit with M-specific software delivering integrated control of longitudinal and lateral dynamics. The new drivetrain technology – making its debut on the new BMW M5 – therefore combines all of the agility and precision of standard rear-wheel drive with the supreme poise and traction of the all-wheel-drive system,” explains Frank van Meel, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW M GmbH. “As a result, the new BMW M5 can be piloted with the familiar blend of sportiness and unerring accuracy on both the race track and the open road – and in various weather conditions, too.”

The M xDrive system enables a wonderfully fleet-footed rear-biased set-up by only bringing the front wheels into play when the rear wheels aren’t able to transmit any more power to the road and additional tractive force is required. Even when it is being driven in a particularly sporty manner and unleashing high levels of power, the new BMW M5 with M xDrive behaves predictably and can be controlled with ease by the driver, paving the way for an even richer experience of the business sedan’s extraordinary performance capabilities.

The driver can choose from five different configurations based on combinations of the DSC modes (DSC on, MDM, DSC off) and M xDrive modes (4WD, 4WD Sport, 2WD).

The configurations allow the drive system’s characteristics to be tailored to both the driver’s personal preferences and the nature of the journey. Purists can opt for classical rear-wheel drive by completely deactivating the all-wheel-drive system.

All in all, the new drive system engenders class-beating handling dynamics accompanied by unrestricted everyday usability. This is made possible by a central intelligence unit with M-specific software for integrated control of longitudinal and lateral dynamics. The result is optimum performance in each of the different configurations. With the advent of M xDrive, the engineers have succeeded in fusing the classical qualities of standard rear-wheel drive with the benefits of the sports-focused BMW xDrive.

This all adds up to a sense of dynamic flair that astounds even seasoned DTM drivers: “I’m a big M5 fan,” explains BMW works driver Timo Glock, for example. “I often drive long distances and I need plenty of room for my family, but I wouldn’t wish to give up the chance to explore the car’s sporting character. With M xDrive, not only can the new BMW M5 be steered with the usual precision and agility, it also offers me something I really appreciate, living in Switzerland: a noticeable boost to traction and controllability – even when driving in particular environmental conditions, such as wet weather and snow, and in both everyday driving situations and when pushing the car to its performance limits.”

Sportiness and smoothness: eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

In the new BMW M5 the task of relaying the engine’s power falls to an extremely slick eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. Thanks to its incredibly short shift times and optimal ratio spacing, the transmission combines with the new M xDrive system and the further improved turbocharged V8 engine to form a perfectly orchestrated whole.

In addition, the transmission offers impressively smooth start-off characteristics, makes manoeuvring easier and has a wide ratio spread that helps to keep fuel consumption low. The driver has the usual choice of three shift programs, as well as the option of changing gear manually using shift paddles on the steering wheel and even performing sporty multiple downshifts. The eight-speed M Steptronic forms part of a new, finely honed overall package that turns the BMW M5 into a high-performance sedan offering genuine everyday practicality, and also resolves the apparent contradiction between sportiness and comfort.

More powerful and more efficient: the newly improved turbocharged V8 engine.

Lurking under the bonnet of the new BMW M5 is the latest version of the 4.4‑litre V8 engine featuring M TwinPower Turbo technology. The further improved high-revving engine outperforms its predecessor in terms of power output and torque. The enhancements implemented by the engineers include higher injection pressure, new turbochargers, more powerful lubrication and cooling systems, plus a modified, lighter exhaust system, which generates an even clearer rendition of the unmistakable M soundtrack. Thus equipped, the V8 propels the sedan to still greater feats of dynamic performance. However, it is the combination of engine, M xDrive and eight-speed M Steptronic, even more than the upgrading of engine’s technical specifications, that really sharpens the high-performance character of the new BMW M5; it takes the dynamic driving experience to a far higher level than the relatively moderate increase in power alone would allow.

Hardware and software with an M-specific set-up.

The principal hardware components of M xDrive are based on those of the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system and the Active M Differential, while the M-specific driving dynamics control software ensures innovative deployment. The drivetrain has been reinforced for greater rigidity and strength to factor in the high torque, rear-biased configuration and 2WD option. While the transfer case splits a portion of the engine’s drive between the front and rear wheels in a smoothly adjustable ratio (depending on requirements), the Active M Differential is responsible for then distributing the drive between the rear wheels. This active control element is part of the M xDrive system’s functionality and its locking effect can be varied between zero and 100 per cent, as the situation demands. This ensures enhanced traction, agility and handling stability when the car is being driven in a very sporty manner or on roads with differing levels of grip – i.e. exactly when it is needed. Since M xDrive includes M-specific dynamics control capability, stabilising interventions from the DSC system are only required in extreme situations. And so the engine’s huge power can be converted into propulsive force with virtually zero losses. The upshot of all this is that the new BMW M5 can be guided with even greater precision and directional accuracy, responds sensitively and directly to the driver’s inputs and thus requires few steering corrections when driving at the limit.

À la carte handling dynamics: 4WD, 4WD Sport or 2WD.

Every time the engine is started, the BMW M5 defaults to 4WD mode with DSC on. Even in this basic configuration, which initially allows a certain amount of slip at the rear wheels to produce the agility for which M models are renowned, M xDrive offers tangible benefits in situations such as accelerating out of bends. The sedan completes the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) or 200 km/h (124 mph) sprints in the sort of times that leave its predecessor trailing in its wake and will make fans of sporty driving everywhere instantly prick up their ears.

Drivers with an even greater thirst for sporty action can tap into the car’s full performance potential by engaging a second configuration: M Dynamic Mode (MDM) with the M xDrive system’s 4WD Sport mode has been configured for ultra-sporty and dynamic handling. As a result, the new BMW M5 becomes far more agile than in the standard configuration and channels even more drive to the rear wheels. At the same time, MDM permits far greater wheel slip, allowing the enthusiastic driver to send the sedan into a controlled drift and experience the remarkable agility of the new BMW M5 – a familiar trait of M models – to the full. The onset of oversteer is telegraphed in good time while the linear increase of sideslip angle makes it easily controllable, particularly as MDM aids stability at the limits of performance.

With DSC deactivated, there is a choice of three modes (4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD). In 4WD mode, M xDrive has a neutral set-up that lends itself to optimum controllability and outstanding traction. This is of particular benefit on roads that are in mediocre or poor condition. At the same time, 4WD mode also lets the driver explore the dynamic performance capabilities of the new BMW M5 with the DSC control system deactivated.

Engaging 4WD Sport mode alters the M xDrive configuration for even greater agility and sportiness. The blend of absolute precision, delightful handling and phenomenal traction it reveals is a sure-fire route to supreme driving pleasure. 4WD Sport mode’s set-up has been fine-tuned with the assistance of highly experienced specialists and is geared towards track use in dry conditions.

With 2WD mode activated, the new BMW M5 offers the keen driver the experience of driving a high-performance sedan with rear-wheel drive only, delivering a pure form of driving enjoyment that captivates in its own unique way. The combination of incredibly agile handling, terrific feel and exceptional controllability can be attributed to the Active M Differential.

The display and control concept.

The driver-focused cockpit of the new BMW M5 now has an even clearer layout courtesy of the lowered instrument panel with freestanding Control Display. The M-style instrument cluster featuring two classical circular dials and red needles also accommodates an additional digital speedometer on the left-hand side, while the rev counter on the right includes a variable rpm pre-warning field and sporty shift lights when the Head-Up Display is switched on. In the centre of the instrument cluster, the driver will find the readouts for the gear selection, Drivelogic shift program, M xDrive mode and M1/M2 set-up, plus the drive and suspension settings currently engaged. When the Head-Up Display is activated, key information can be projected onto the windscreen so it appears in the driver’s immediate field of view. The graphics of the M view option developed for dynamic driving have been completely revised and M view now also allows navigation information to be displayed, if desired. The projection area of the Head-Up Display in the new BMW M5 has increased in size by around 70 per cent.

On top of the redesigned gear selector can be found the three-position rocker switch for selecting the Drivelogic shift programs. The P button below it for the parking lock is also within easy reach. In typical M fashion, the gears of the new eight-speed M Steptronic transmission can be changed using both the selector lever and the shift paddles on the steering wheel, while drivers can also opt for the automated D mode. In the manual S mode, meanwhile, the M Steptronic allows multiple downshifts, resulting in a significant reduction in shift times when performing sporty driving manoeuvres, such as braking hard into corners.

As on the outgoing model, the M sports steering wheel includes two individually configurable M Drive buttons (M1, M2) that allow the driver to retrieve a previously stored set-up. The buttons have been completely redesigned and are prominently located. This ensures they are even easier to reach and, in customary M style, offer excellent speed of use. As well as the M xDrive mode and the Drivelogic shift program, the engine and damper mapping, Servotronic steering characteristics and readouts in the Head-Up Display can also be memorised. The desired settings can be stored via the iDrive menu. An icon in the instrument cluster indicates to the driver when a stored M1/M2 set-up is activated.

A short press of the DSC button in the centre console activates M Dynamic Mode (MDM) and a long press engages DSC off mode. When DSC off mode is activated, the M xDrive settings menu appears in the Control Display at the same time. Plus, it is now possible to select 4WD, 4WD Sport or 2WD mode using either the iDrive Controller or the touchscreen function. The mode activated is displayed in the instrument cluster and can also be saved as part of an M Drive set-up...

BMW M stelt de meest krachtige BMW M5 ooit voor om de 30ste verjaardag van deze krachtige sportberline te vieren.

Om de 30ste verjaardag van de BMW M5 - de grondlegger van het gamma sportberlines - te vieren, stelt BMW M een speciale en exclusieve editie van de huidige vijfde generatie voor die zich onderscheidt van zijn stalgenoten door zijn extra kracht. Deze BMW M5 "30 jaar M5" zal in slechts 300 exemplaren gebouwd worden en produceert 441 kW/600 pk met een koppel van 700 Nm. Dit speciale model (met een gecombineerd verbruik van 9,9 l/100km en gecombineerde CO2 uitstoot van 231 g/km) is niet enkel de meest krachtige BMW M5 van de BMW M productielijn ooit, maar ook de meest performante wagen uit de geschiedenis van het Beierse merk. De "30 jaar M5" sprint van 0 naar 100 km/h in een razendsnelle 3,9 seconden. Deze sportieve berline van BMW M GmbH is helemaal gericht op topprestaties en wordt gelanceerd in juli 2013. De wagen krijgt nieuwe designaccenten, een optioneel Competitie Pakket voor nog betere prestaties en meer uitgebreide BMW Individual en ConnectedDrive opties. Als BMW M GmbH een nieuwe M versie voorstelt, ligt de klemtoon traditioneel onder de motorkap.
