Munich. More dynamic than ever, brimming with digital innovations, with a spacious interior exuding a premium feel and – in the shape of the BMW i5, with a fully electric drivetrain for the first time, the new BMW 5 Series reinforces its claim to leadership in the premium executive class. For the members of the World Car Awards expert jury, it was the standout new arrival among the field of luxury vehicles which celebrated their debuts in the world’s car markets over the past 12 months. The international panel of experts therefore handed the BMW 5 Series the crown of World Luxury Car 2024. The results were announced today at the start of the New York International Auto Show 2024 as part of a ceremony broadcast worldwide via streaming services.

The success of the BMW 5 Series was underpinned by assessments carried out during extensive test drives by the around 100 car journalists from 30 countries that made up the jury. These ratings were then recorded in detail by the World Car Awards organisers. The BMW 5 Series fended off competition from a field of 13 new luxury vehicles, winning over the jury not only with the majestic power delivery from its portfolio of electrified combustion engines as well as the electric drive system, but also with its high comfort levels over long-distance journeys and numerous digital innovations. “We are very pleased to receive this prestigious award. The verdict of the international jury shows that our strong-character products with their typical BMW qualities convince and inspire demanding target groups all over the world,” said Bernd Körber, Senior Vice President BMW Brand and Product Management, Connected Company.

BMW 5 Series: Consistent electrification and digital innovations.

The BMW 5 Series displays its progressive character with its powertrain technology, its innovative digital services as well as an elegantly sporty design, generous levels of cabin space, optimised acoustic comfort and a progressive premium ambience for the interior. Advanced assistance systems like the motorway assistant and active Lane Change Assistant with eye confirmation emphasise the long-distance qualities of the BMW 5 Series. With the display and control/operation system BMW iDrive with QuickSelect, the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with extended functionality all on board, the i5 is comprehensively set up for user-vehicle interaction via touch control and natural speech. When the car is stationary, BMW 5 Series occupants can explore the extensive video streaming offering on the control display and enjoy a new form of in-car gaming – e.g. to make use of the time when the high-voltage battery is charging.

As a fully integrated member of the new BMW 5 Series model range, the BMW i5 offers locally emission-free driving pleasure. The driving dynamics and efficiency of the BMW i5 have their roots in fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology. This comprises highly integrated drive units and high-voltage batteries with extremely high energy density. In addition, the latest evolution of adaptive recuperation and an intelligent combination of heat pump technology for heating and cooling the interior, drive system and high-voltage battery help the car to achieve a range of up to 582 kilometres (362 miles) in the WLTP cycle, depending on the model and specification. The Combined Charging Unit of the BMW i5 enables AC charging at a rate of up to 22 kW and DC charging at up to 205 kW. This means the car’s range can be boosted by up to 156 kilometres (97 miles) within just 10 minutes when plugged into a fast-charging station.

The entire combustion engine portfolio has also been electrified. A flexibly designed drive architecture that was open to different technologies from the outset enables the new BMW 5 Series Sedan to be offered for the first time as an all-electric model, with plug-in hybrid systems and with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines. The combustion engines from the new modular generation of BMW Group Efficient Dynamics engines all feature the latest version of 48-volt mild hybrid technology.

BMW wins title number nine in the World Car Awards.

The World Car Awards were created 20 years ago to stand alongside national and regional distinctions as an acknowledgement of outstanding innovations and new products in car markets worldwide. This year, the awards were presented in a total of five categories in addition to the overall prize.

Over the years, BMW has collected eight wins in the World Car Awards. One of the victors was the BMW 7 Series, which was crowned World Luxury Car in 2016 already. In 2018, the title of World Performance Car was presented to the BMW M5. This ninth title win for the Bavarian premium carmaker is the latest in a long line of distinctions amassed by the new BMW 5 Series over the past few months. For instance, the all-electric version alone adds to the trophy collection with a total of three „Car of the Year“ awards from Norway, Denmark and Italy.

De BMW 5 Reeks Touring, het summum van rijplezier, sportieve elegantie en moderne functionaliteit in het hogere middenklassesegment, gaat een nieuw tijdperk in. De zesde generatie van de BMW 5 Reeks Touring is vooruitstrevender dan ooit, met tal van digitale innovaties, baanbrekende systemen voor geautomatiseerd rijden en parkeren, meer duurzaamheid over zijn volledige levenscyclus en voor het eerst een zuiver elektrische aandrijving als BMW i5 Touring. De nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring werpt zich op als een geraffineerde allrounder voor dagelijkse ritten en lange reizen en verenigt een stijlvolle uitstraling met een superieure sportiviteit, een veelzijdig karakter en een comfortabel plaatsaanbod.

Dankzij zijn flexibele aandrijfarchitectuur kunnen modelvarianten met uiterst efficiënte benzine- en dieselmotoren, plug-in-hybridesystemen en zuiver elektrische aandrijvingen op één enkele productielijn worden geassembleerd in de fabriek van de BMW Group in Dingolfing. De lancering in Duitsland, diverse andere Europese landen en Japan gaat in mei 2024 van start. Andere markten volgen in juni 2024.

Langgerekte proporties, krachtige voorkant, unieke achterkant.

Dynamisch langgerekte proporties en royaal vormgegeven oppervlakken kenmerken het exterieur van de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring. In vergelijking met zijn voorganger is de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring 97 millimeter langer (5.060 millimeter), 32 millimeter breder (1.900 millimeter) en 17 millimeter hoger (1.515 millimeter). De nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring heeft ook de langste wielbasis in zijn klasse: die groeide met 20 millimeter tot 2.995 millimeter.

De opvallende voorkant kreeg een moderne interpretatie van de typische dubbele koplampen en het BMW radiatorrooster. Twee bijna verticale led-elementen fungeren respectievelijk als richtingaanwijzers en dagrijlichten. Het BMW radiatorrooster, dat ver naar voren werd geschoven, kan als optie worden uitgerust met de BMW Iconic Glow-contourverlichting. In zijaanzicht benadrukken de vlakke raamlijnen en de lange dakspoiler het sportieve, elegante tweevolumedesign. De krachtig vormgegeven wielkasten achteraan en de vlakke achterruit benadrukken samen de brede uitstraling van de wagen. Een L-vormige chroombies verdeelt de led-achterlichtelementen, die tot ver in de flanken doorlopen.

Het kleurenpalet omvat drie BMW Individual-kleuren. Het nieuwe model staat standaard op lichtmetalen velgen van 18" en 19" voor de zuiver elektrische en plug-in-hybridemodellen. Als optie zijn lichtmetalen velgen tot 21" verkrijgbaar. Het dynamische karakter van de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring kan nog extra worden benadrukt met het M Sportpakket, het M Sport Pack Pro en het M Carbon exterieurpakket. Als topmodel van de 5 Reeks Touring wordt de BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring (energieverbruik: 20,8 - 18,3 kWh/100 km over de gecombineerde WLTP-cyclus) standaard geleverd met koetswerkcomponenten die geen twijfel laten bestaan over zijn uitstekende rijdynamiek.

Vooruitstrevend ontworpen cockpit, volledig veganistisch interieur.

Centraal in het vooruitstrevende, bestuurdergerichte cockpitdesign staat het BMW Curved Display. Het 12,3" grote Info Display en het Control Display met een diagonaal van 14,9" vormen een volledig digitaal weergavenetwerk. De moderne premiumsfeer in het interieur wordt nog versterkt door de nieuwe standaard gemonteerde sportzetels, het stuur, dat nu onderaan vlakker is, en de BMW Interaction Bar.

De nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring beschikt standaard over een volledig veganistisch interieur. De zeteloppervlakken in de Veganza-versie zijn als optie ook verkrijgbaar met een decoratieve perforatie. Andere opties zijn onder meer de bekleding in BMW Individual leder Merino in verschillende tweekleurige uitvoeringen. Ook het panoramisch doorschijnend schuifdak en het Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System met maar liefst achttien luidsprekers behoren tot de hoogtepunten van de optionele uitrusting.

Geoptimaliseerde functionaliteit voor dagelijks gebruik, vrije tijd en reizen.

De nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring toont zich ruimer en biedt – zeker achterin – merkbaar meer plaats voor de benen, schouders en ellebogen. Ook werd het akoestisch comfort geoptimaliseerd. Met zijn veelzijdige interieur en talrijke intelligente functies toont de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring zich op de weg even indrukwekkend als bij dagelijks gebruik.

Dankzij de bredere kofferopening en de lage laaddrempel kunt u grote voorwerpen gemakkelijk opbergen. Alle varianten van de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring hebben ongeacht hun aandrijftechnologie een koffervolume dat kan worden uitgebreid van 570 tot 1.700 liter. Naast de automatisch bediende achterklep biedt het nieuwe model ook standaard een in drie delen neerklapbare achterbankleuning (40:20:40), die vanuit de bagageruimte kan worden neergeklapt. De opbergvakken onder de koffervloer bieden plaats aan het scheidingsnet, de bagageafdekking en de laadkabel voor de zuiver elektrische en plug-in-hybridemodellen.

De zuiver elektrische BMW i5 Touring is vanaf de lancering in twee varianten verkrijgbaar.

De nieuwe BMW i5 Touring is het eerste zuiver elektrische premiummodel in zijn segment. Hij is vanaf de lancering leverbaar in twee versies. In de BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring vormen twee sterk geïntegreerde aandrijfeenheden op de voor- en achteras samen een elektrische vierwielaandrijving met een vermogen tot 442 kW/601 pk. Wanneer de functie M Launch Control of M Sport Boost actief is, wordt het systeemkoppel verhoogd tot 820 Nm. Het topmodel accelereert in 3,9 seconden vanuit stilstand naar 100 km/u en zijn topsnelheid is elektronisch begrensd op 230 km/u. De elektromotor van de BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring bevindt zich op de achteras (energieverbruik: 19,3 - 16,5 kWh/100 km over de gecombineerde WLTP-cyclus) en levert een maximumvermogen van 250 kW/340 pk en een maximumkoppel tot 430 Nm met de functie Sport Boost of Launch Control. De BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring accelereert van nul naar 100 km/u in 6,1 seconden.

In beide modellen levert de hoogspanningsaccu in de bodem een bruikbare energie-inhoud van 81,2 kWh. Naast de efficiënte elektromotoren dragen ook de adaptieve recuperatie en warmtepomptechnologie voor de verwarming en koeling van het interieur, de aandrijving en de hoogspanningsaccu bij aan het grote rijbereik van de BMW i5 Touring. Het rijbereik bepaald in de WLTP-testprocedure bedraagt 445 tot 506 kilometer voor de BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring en 483 tot 560 kilometer voor de BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring.

Innovatieve oplaadoplossingen van BMW Charging.

De accu kan worden opgeladen met wisselstroom met een vermogen tot 11 kW (standaard) of 22 kW (optioneel). De hoogspanningsaccu kan opladen met gelijkstroom met een vermogen tot 205 kW. Het anticiperend thermisch beheer van de hoogspanningsaccu optimaliseert de efficiëntie bij het gebruik van snellaadstations.

Nieuwe dieselmotoren met Mild Hybrid-technologie met 48V-accu.

Alle dieselmotoren waarmee de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring beschikbaar is, worden gekoppeld aan Mild Hybrid-technologie met 48V-accu en een achtversnellingsbak Steptronic. De viercilindermotor van de BMW 520d Touring (brandstofverbruik: 5,9 – 5,3 l/100 km; CO2-uitstoot:
154 – 141 g/km over de gecombineerde WLTP-cyclus) en de BMW 520d xDrive Touring (brandstofverbruik: 6,2 – 5,7 l/100 km; CO2-uitstoot: 163 – 149 g/km over de gecombineerde WLTP-cyclus) is vanaf de marktlancering verkrijgbaar en levert een maximumvermogen van 145 kW/197 pk en een maximumkoppel van 400 Nm. In de zomer van 2024 wordt het motorgamma nog aangevuld met een zescilinder-in-lijn diesel. Tegelijkertijd volgen twee modelvarianten met de nieuwste generatie van de plug-in-hybrideaandrijving.

De ideale balans tussen sportiviteit en reiscomfort.

De nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring dankt zijn rijplezier aan een ideaal evenwicht tussen sportiviteit en reiscomfort. Met de langste wielbasis in dit competitieve segment, grote spoorbreedtes, een bijna perfect evenwichtige 50: 50-verdeling van de asbelasting, een intelligente lichtgewicht constructie en een koetswerk-chassisverbinding met geoptimaliseerde stijfheid, heeft hij alle troeven in huis.

De sterk verbeterde ophangingstechnologie omvat een Sport Steering, een direct gestuurde wielslipbeperking en standaard de jongste versie van het geïntegreerde remsysteem. De BMW i5 Touring en de plug-in-hybridemodellen beschikken ook over een luchtgeveerde achteras, inclusief automatische niveauregeling.

Als optie zijn een M sportophanging, M sportremmen en de adaptieve ophanging Professional (standaard op de BMW i5 M60 xDrive) met elektronisch gestuurde schokdempers, Integral Active Steering en nieuw Lateral Dynamics Management verkrijgbaar. De adaptieve M sportophanging Professional met actieve rolstabilisatie en actief rolcomfort is eveneens verkrijgbaar voor het topmodel.

Innovatieve systemen voor geautomatiseerd rijden en parkeren.

De systemen voor semiautonoom rijden en parkeren die standaard of als optie worden aangeboden op de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring, vestigen nieuwe normen in dit segment met hun uitgebreide functionaliteit en betrouwbaarheid en hun dagdagelijkse voordelen. Het hoogtepunt van het gamma is het optionele Driving Assistant Pack Professional met Steering & Lane Control Assistant en Distance Control met Stop&Go functie.

De nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring beschikt standaard over het Parking Assistant Pack met startcontrole, de aanhangwagenassistent en een achteruitrijcamera. Met het optionele Parking Assistant Pack Professional kunt u de automatische parkeer- en manoeuvreerfuncties vanop een afstand tot 200 meter bedienen met behulp van een smartphone.

BMW iDrive met 'QuickSelect', videostreaming, AirConsole-games.

Het verbeterde weergave- en bedieningssysteem BMW iDrive, dat steunt op het BMW Operating System 8.5, biedt een nieuw ontworpen startscherm en de snelle toegangsfunctie 'QuickSelect'. De combinatie van het BMW Curved Display en de BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant werd consequent ontworpen voor bediening via het aanraakscherm of met natuurlijke spraakcommando's.

De standaard BMW Live Cockpit Navigation Plus omvat het cloudgebaseerde navigatiesysteem BMW Maps. De optionele BMW Live Cockpit Navigation Professional omvat het BMW Head-Up Display en Augmented View op het Control Display of de instrumentencombi.

Het infotainmentsysteem van de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring wordt aangevuld met een reeks aantrekkelijke digitale diensten. Zo biedt het Connected Package Professional YouTube om internationale en landspecifieke videocontent te streamen op het Control Display. Ook maakt de nieuwe BMW iDrive het mogelijk om met het AirConsole-platform een innovatieve vorm van gaming in de wagen te gebruiken.

De nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring is standaard uitgerust met twee 5G-gsm-antennes en als optie kunnen er zelfs vier worden geïnstalleerd. Dat garandeert een optimale ontvangst voor telefonie en online diensten.

De standaarduitrusting omvat ook een geoptimaliseerde smartphone-integratie via Apple CarPlay® en Android Auto™. De standaard Personal eSIM integreert de wagen volledig in het digitale ecosysteem van de klant. Met de functie Remote Software Upgrades blijft de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Touring altijd up-to-date met de nieuwste software. Daarnaast is het mogelijk om bepaalde functies in de BMW ConnectedDrive Store te testen en bij te boeken.

Munich. Additions to the line-up of drive systems and the range of optional extras are set to further increase the appeal and diversity of the BMW product range from spring 2024. The BMW i5 Berline and BMW iX2 fully electric models will each be available from March 2024 with an additional drive system variant. The drive system offerings for the BMW X2 and BMW XM have also been expanded. And additional exterior paint finishes will be offered for the BMW 5 Series Berline, BMW X2 and BMW iX2. Customers will also be able to order the business berline with new variants of the BMW Individual Merino leather trim.

Attractive new features will also be introduced in spring 2024 in the area of digital services. These include easier use of the voice assistant Siri (as part of the integration of the Apple iPhone into cars specified with BMW Operating System 9), and the optimised display of ratings for charging stations for fully electric and plug-in hybrid BMW models. The steady expansion of the range of functions for the My BMW App also continues.

BMW i5 xDrive40: third fully electric variant of the business berline.

A third fully electric variant will be added to the new BMW 5 Series Berline line-up in March 2024. The new BMW i5 xDrive40 Berline (electric power consumption, combined: 20.0 – 17.2 kWh/100 km in the WLTP cycle) has two highly integrated electric drive units at the front and rear axle which together develop a system output of up to 290 kW/394 hp and peak torque of 590 Nm (435 lb-ft). Underpinned by the resultant electric all-wheel drive, the BMW i5 xDrive40 Berline accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds. Its top speed is limited to 215 km/h (134 mph).

The third fully electric model variant of the new business berline stores its energy in a high-voltage battery positioned deep in the vehicle floor. The battery delivers 81.2 kWh of usable energy. The car’s Combined Charging Unit enables AC charging at a rate of 11 kW as standard and 22 kW as an option. And it also allows DC charging at fast-charging stations at up to 205 kW. This means the range of the BMW i5 xDrive40 Berline can be increased by 156 kilometres (97 miles) in the space of ten minutes. The likewise standard Plug & Charge Multi Contract function enables automatic authentication of the car at public charging points. The range of the new BMW i5 xDrive40 Berline as calculated in the WLTP cycle is 463 – 538 kilometres (288 – 334 miles).

Additional exterior paint finishes can be specified for all model variants of the new BMW 5 Series Berline from March 2024. The spectrum of colours will now also include the BMW Individual Frozen Portimao Blue metallic. At the same time, the business berline will also be offered with extremely exclusive BMW Individual special paint finishes. BMW Individual has come up with around 150 eye-catching shades (solid, metallic and matt) for this product area. All BMW Individual special paint finishes stand out with their impressive depth of colour and exceptional lustre. Customers can unlock an overview of the variants for the new BMW 5 Series Berline using the BMW Individual Visualizer, which can be accessed via a link in the vehicle configurator.

Added to which, extra variants of the seat and interior surfaces for the new BMW 5 Series Berline are also available. If the optional comfort seats have been specified, the BMW Individual Merino leather trim can also be specified in the bi-colour variants Dark Violet/Atlas Grey and Taupe Grey/Atlas Grey from March 2024.

New entry-level variant for the BMW iX2; launch of the BMW X2 xDrive20d.

BMW’s current model offensive in the area of electric mobility also brings additional variety to the premium compact segment. A new entry-level variant of the fully electric BMW iX2 will go on sale in March 2024. The new BMW iX2 eDrive20 (electric power consumption, combined: 16.9 – 15.3 kWh/100 km in the WLTP cycle) takes a particularly economical route to delivering locally emission-free driving pleasure in a compact Sports Activity Coupé (SAC). Powered by a 150 kW/204 hp electric motor at the front axle, it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.6 seconds and posts a range of 439 – 478 kilometres (273 – 297 miles) in the WLTP cycle. Its top speed is limited to 170 km/h (106 mph).

The high-voltage battery in the new BMW iX2 eDrive20 serves up 64.78 kWh of usable energy and can be charged from AC sources at 11 kW as standard and up to 22 kW as an option. DC charging is possible at up to 130 kW. Thanks to extremely efficient charging software and predictive heat management capability, brief stops are enough to significantly increase the battery charge. In ten minutes hooked up to a fast-charging station, the BMW iX2 eDrive20 can take on sufficient energy to boost its range by 120 kilometres (75 miles). The BMW iX2 eDrive20 is also equipped for using the Plug & Charge Multi Contract function as standard.

Lining up alongside the new entry-level variant of the BMW iX2 is the new BMW X2 xDrive20d (fuel consumption, combined: 5.2 – 4.8 litres/100 km [54.3 – 58.9 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions, combined: 136 – 125 g/km in the WLTP cycle). The second diesel variant of the compact SAC is distinguished by even more rapid power delivery and even greater efficiency courtesy of 48V mild hybrid technology. Its 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine links up with an electric motor integrated into the seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch. The motor serves as a crankshaft-driven starter generator and can both ease the load on the diesel engine and act in unison with it. The drive system develops maximum output of 120 kW/163 hp (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 110 kW/150 hp and the electric motor with up to 14 kW/19 hp) and peak torque of 400 Nm / 295 lb-ft (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 360 Nm / 265 lb-ft and the electric motor with up to 55 Nm / 41 lb-ft), all of which is channelled to the road via the intelligent all-wheel-drive system BMW xDrive. This allows the BMW X2 xDrive20d to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.6 seconds. Top speed is 207 km/h (129 mph).

From March 2024, all model variants of the new BMW X2 and new BMW iX2 will also be available with an expanded range of exterior paint finishes (BMW Individual Special Request). Frozen Black metallic is a new addition to the selection.

BMW XM 50e: high performance with maximum efficiency.

As the latest offshoot of the first ever electrified high-performance model from BMW M GmbH, the new BMW XM 50e (fuel consumption, combined: 1.7 – 1.3 litres/100 km [166.2 – 217.3 mpg imp]; electric power consumption, combined: 32.2 – 31.5 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 37 – 30 g/km in the WLTP cycle) blends signature M dynamism, extrovert design and progressive interior luxury with maximum efficiency. Its M HYBRID drive system is composed of a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine and an electric motor integrated, together with its power electronics, into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. This combination produces system output of 350 kW/476 hp (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 230 kW/313 hp and the electric motor with up to 145 kW/197 hp) and maximum system torque of 700 Nm / 516 lb-ft (developed by the combination of the combustion engine with up to 450 Nm / 332 lb-ft and the electric motor with up to 280 Nm / 206 lb-ft).

The latest version of the 3.0-litre combustion engine fitted in the BMW XM 50e owes its enhanced performance characteristics among other things to the Miller combustion cycle, dual injection, an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head and VANOS variable camshaft timing, which now works electrically. The electric motor has a pre-gearing stage patented by BMW, which allows the effective torque at the transmission input for the motor to be increased to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft). The top speed of the high-performance model – which is also equipped with the all-wheel-drive system M xDrive – is an electronically limited 250 km/h (155 mph). Thanks to an electric range of 77 – 83 kilometres (48 – 52 miles) in the WLTP cycle, the BMW XM 50e can cover much of its everyday mileage – e.g. in urban centres – with zero local emissions. And it can also be driven on electric power alone beyond the city limits at speeds of up to 140 km/h (87 mph).

The most efficient version of the new M HYBRID system comes together with the extraordinary presence of the unmistakable high-performance model in the Sports Activity Vehicle segment. The model-specific design features of the new variant include the black accent band along the sides of the car, plus a surround for the BMW kidney grille and trim detailing for the rear diffuser (both in Pearl-effect Chrome), exhaust tailpipe trim in Black high-gloss and silver-coloured bordering for the model badge. Customers wishing to bring an extra personal touch to the interior of their new BMW XM 50e – which also offers a unique combination of modern sports car flair and extravagant luxury with its M-specific cockpit, M multifunction seats, sculptural headliner and M Lounge in the rear compartment – can specify features including exclusive Vintage leather for the upper section of the instrument panel and door trim panels.

New digital services, My BMW App with additional functions.

Among the digital services available for the first time from spring 2024 is the extended smartphone integration for vehicles equipped with BMW Operating System 9. This enables the Siri voice assistant for the Apple iPhone to be activated directly by voice command and without needing to also press the push-to-talk button. Elsewhere, the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps now boasts improved display of information on charging stations. The available images and ratings are shown both in the list of search results and in the detailed display. The charging station ratings will now be shown clearly on a scale of zero to five stars. 

Added to which, in numerous European countries the BMW iDrive display and control/operation system in many current models also enables digital payment of parking fees and – in Germany – also fuel top-ups from inside the car. As with payment of parking fees, this uses the credit card information pre-stored in the vehicle apps.

As a universal digital interface for data exchange between the customer and their car, the My BMW App offers an ever-expanding number of functions. From spring 2024, Comfort Access with the BMW Digital Key Plus will be integrated into the My BMW App in vehicles equipped with BMW Operating System 8, 8.5 or 9. In addition, the map view for selecting navigation destinations imported into the vehicle has been newly designed. This also improves the search function and the visibility of the most relevant content. Map and routing functions will in future be proposed based on current vehicle or user contexts.

Finally, the new E-mobility Analysis function will also be added to the My Trips menu item in the My BMW App. Based on the customer’s driving behaviour, this function proposes the BMW model with all-electric drive system most suited to them. These recommendations are intended to help spark interest among users of combustion-engined vehicles in switching to an electric vehicle.

Munich. Following the initial sales launch in South Korea, the new BMW 5 Series Berline and the first BMW i5 Berline are now coming to dealers in numerous other markets. In Germany, the first vehicles will be delivered to customers from 21 October 2023. The market launch also begins in the other European countries on the same day. One week later, on 28 October 2023, the new edition of the BMW 5 Series will make its road debut in the USA. The other global markets will follow on 25 November 2023.

The eighth generation of the world's most successful business sedan will also be offered for the first time as an all-electric BMW i5. Even before sales have begun, incoming orders show that this model variant in particular is meeting with high customer demand and will thus further accelerate the ramp-up of electric mobility pushed by BMW. Right from the start, customers can choose from two variants of the BMW i5. The new BMW i5 eDrive40 Berline (power consumption combined: 18.9 - 15.9 kWh/100 km according to WLTP) features an output of up to 250 kW/340 hp and a range of 498 to 582 kilometres determined in the WLTP test cycle. The top model of the entire series is the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Berline with up to 442 kW/601 hp (power consumption combined: 20.6 – 18.2 kWh/100 km according to WLTP).

The new BMW 5 Series Berline emphasises its progressive character not only with the two all-electric model variants, but also with innovative digital services for in-car gaming, audio and video streaming, among other things, as well as with particularly high-grade driver assistance systems. The highlight in the field of systems for automated driving and parking is the Highway Assistant, which now also enables drivers in Germany to take their hands off the steering wheel for a longer period of time at speeds of up to 130 km/h and place them in a comfortable position, provided they continue to keep a close eye on the traffic situation and are able to take over from the system again at any time if necessary.

The intensive experience of semi-automated driving is complemented by the Automatic Lane Change. With this globally unique function, a glance in the exterior mirror is enough to trigger a lane change, which is then carried out automatically by the system.

The new generation of the BMW 5 Series Touring will celebrate its world premiere in spring 2024. The second body variant of the new BMW 5 Series will be available with the same range of drives as the new BMW 5 Series Berline. This means that the new BMW 5 Series Touring is the first premium car of its kind to be offered with highly efficient combustion engines including 48-volt mild hybrid technology, plug-in hybrid systems and, for the first time, an all-electric drive. The unique combination of sporty elegance, modern functionality and locally emission-free driving pleasure is developed specifically for the automotive markets in Europe as well as in Japan and Taiwan.

München. De nieuwe voorzieningen zullen het BMW-gamma vanaf dit najaar naar een nog hoger niveau tillen op het vlak van digitalisering. De nieuwe BMW X1 en BMW 2 Reeks Active Tourer worden vanaf november 2023 uitgerust met de opgewaardeerde BMW iDrive met QuickSelect en het BMW Operating System 9. Tegelijkertijd wordt het aanbod van BMW Digital Premium, met zijn uiterst personaliseerbare selectie van online services, in beide modelreeksen geïntroduceerd. Via Remote Software Upgrade zullen bovendien extra digitale diensten beschikbaar worden voor een groot aantal huidige modellen. Daarnaast zal een uitgebreide waaier van functies ook de aantrekkingskracht van de My BMW-app versterken.

Intuïtiever en gebruiksvriendelijker dan ooit: nieuwe BMW iDrive met QuickSelect.

Vanaf november 2023 wordt de opgewaardeerde BMW iDrive met QuickSelect standaard gemonteerd in alle modelvarianten van de nieuwe BMW X1, de zuiver elektrische BMW iX1 en de nieuwe BMW 2 Reeks Active Tourer, waardoor tal van voertuigfuncties nog intuïtiever en eenvoudiger kunnen worden bediend. De nieuwste versie van het weergave- en bedienings-/besturingssysteem is gebaseerd op het BMW Operating System 9 en maakt samen met het BMW Curved Display en de BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant deel uit van een pakket.

De nieuwe BMW iDrive beschikt over een nieuw ontworpen startscherm en de QuickSelect-sneltoegang met verbeterde menustructuur die voortbouwt op de kenmerken van consumentenelektronica. Het nieuwe startscherm toont op elk moment de kaartweergave van het navigatiesysteem of andere individueel configureerbare grafische elementen op het controlescherm. Op hetzelfde niveau verschijnen functiepictogrammen in een verticale opstelling aan de bestuurderszijde van het display. Zo kunnen bestuurders met een verticale veegbeweging van de vinger overschakelen tussen pictogrammen. Met de QuickSelect-functie kan de op deze manier geselecteerde functie rechtstreeks worden geactiveerd zonder een submenu in te voeren.

Het BMW Operating System 9 werd intern ontwikkeld door de BMW Group en is voor het eerst gebaseerd op een AOSP-softwarestack (Android Open Source Project). Het legt de basis voor een breder aanbod van digitale inhoud voor informatie en entertainment, aangevuld met kortere updatecycli voor functies en een betere toegankelijkheid voor diverse specifieke online diensten.

Nieuw aanbod van BMW Digital Premium: gepersonaliseerde selectie van gaming, video & muziekstreaming, evenals andere online diensten.

Het nieuwe BMW Digital Premium-aanbod wordt in november 2023 gelanceerd in Duitsland, samen met de introductie van het BMW Operating System 9. Het wordt als optie verkrijgbaar op de BMW X1, BMW iX1 en BMW 2 Reeks Active Tourer en kan worden besteld in de BMW ConnectedDrive Store, die nu werd uitgebreid met bijkomende apps van derden. Zo kunnen klanten in hun wagen genieten van alle apps die in hun land beschikbaar zijn als onderdeel van een pakket, bv. video- en muziekstreaming, nieuws of gaming. Daarnaast omvat BMW Digital Premium ook verbeterde navigatiefuncties en extra personaliseringsmogelijkheden dankzij onder meer extra My Modes.

Net als alle andere ConnectedDrive Upgrades is BMW Digital Premium verkrijgbaar in de ConnectedDrive Store, en dat via de website, in de My BMW-app of rechtstreeks in de wagen. En vanaf november 2023 wordt het voor klanten nog eenvoudiger om ConnectedDrive Upgrades toe te voegen, omdat het dan mogelijk wordt om ze niet alleen rechtstreeks in hun wagen te selecteren, maar er tegelijk voor te betalen. Met andere woorden, in plaats van doorgestuurd te worden naar de app of het internet om hun bestelling te voltooien, zullen klanten het volledige proces, inclusief betaling, kunnen uitvoeren vanuit het comfort van hun wagen.

Dit nieuwe aanbod biedt klanten de mogelijk om een gepersonaliseerde selectie uit het groeiende aanbod van digitale diensten samen te stellen – een aanbod dat perfect aansluit bij hun persoonlijke behoeften. BMW Digital Premium is bijvoorbeeld in Duitsland verkrijgbaar voor 9,98 euro per maand of vanaf medio 2024 (voorlopig) tegen een jaarlijkse vergoeding van 99 euro (beide inclusief btw). Het pakket omvat ook het datagebruik voor alle digitale diensten en apps uit de BMW ConnectedDrive Store, inclusief muziek- en videostreaming. Klanten kunnen genieten van een gratis proefperiode van drie maanden waarmee ze alle diensten en inhoud van BMW Digital Premium kunnen uitproberen.

Een nieuwe vorm van in-car gaming, die haar gelijke niet kent in de autosector, is een van de hoogtepunten van BMW Digital Premium. BMW presenteert in samenwerking met gameplatform AirConsole een uitgebreide selectie van casual games die een smartphone als controller gebruiken. De games kunnen worden gespeeld in de solo- of multiplayermodus wanneer de wagen stilstaat, bijvoorbeeld om de tijd te doden terwijl de hoogspanningsbatterij van de BMW iX1 of de BMW 2 Reeks Active Tourer plug-in hybrid wordt opgeladen. In eerste instantie zullen er ongeveer tien titels beschikbaar zijn om te spelen, waaronder racen, sport, quiz en skill games, en het assortiment zal verder blijven groeien.

Naast audiostreaming biedt BMW Digital Premium de inzittenden ook toegang tot een brede waaier van videostreamingdiensten (powered by Xperi TiVo) op het controlescherm terwijl de wagen stilstaat. Die geven klanten een steeds grotere selectie aan geaggregeerde video-inhoud, zoals nieuws en live of on-demand streaming van films en series, in combinatie met landspecifieke inhoud. De Video App, die met BMW Digital Premium verkrijgbaar is in de VS, het VK, Zuid-Korea, Frankrijk, Italië, Duitsland en Spanje, omvat onder meer de portalen Pluto, Bloomberg Television, Deutsche Welle, Al Jazeera en TED. In Duitsland zal het pakket bovendien de nieuws-app van Tagesschau en de populaire streamingdienst JOYN omvatten. Ook in Italië en de VS zal vanaf het begin landspecifieke content worden aangeboden. De portfolio van videostreamingplatformen zal blijven evolueren en zal ook geleidelijk aan worden uitgerold naar andere landen.

Verbeterde navigatiefuncties, bijkomende My Modes.

Een van de belangrijkste voordelen van BMW Digital Premium is de verbeterde functionaliteit van het cloudondersteunde navigatiesysteem BMW Maps. Zo geeft de realtime verkeersinformatie (RTTI) met kleurcodering aan hoe het verkeer over de volledige kaartzone verloopt, zelfs wanneer de routegeleiding niet is geactiveerd. Andere functies zijn 3D-visualisatie van gebouwen en omliggende elementen in de kaartweergave en uitgebreide informatie over parkeerfaciliteiten. De bestuurder wordt ook proactief op de hoogte gebracht van de huidige verkeerssituatie en de geschatte aankomsttijd wanneer hij/zij naar vaak voorkomende bestemmingen rijdt. Indien nodig zal het systeem zelfs een alternatieve route voorstellen. De uitschakelinstructies en rijstrookaanbevelingen worden in realistische vorm weergegeven op het informatiedisplay en het optionele Head-Up Display.

In Duitsland en andere Europese landen biedt BMW Digital Premium het bijkomende voordeel dat het bestuurders toelaat om parkeerkosten rechtstreeks vanuit hun wagen te betalen in parkeerzones die deze betaalmethode ondersteunen. Bovendien kunnen Duitse bestuurders de brandstofrekeningen van hun auto ook digitaal betalen na het tanken bij deelnemende tankstations. In beide gevallen wordt betaald met een creditkaart die eerder via de My BMW-app werd geregistreerd bij partnerbedrijf Parkopedia.

Daarnaast voegt BMW Digital Premium de Expressive Mode, Relax Mode en Digital Art Mode toe aan de keuze van My Modes. Zo krijgen klanten nog meer mogelijkheden om de rijervaring te personaliseren. Het introduceert ook nieuwe varianten voor zowel de welkomstverlichting als de grafische weergave van de BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Huidige software-upgrades op afstand voor nog meer rijplezier.

De Remote Software Upgrades brengen bestaande digitale functies up-to-date. Tegelijkertijd kunnen nieuwe functies en kwaliteitsverbeteringen ook via de lucht in de auto worden geïmporteerd. De nieuwste gaming- en videostreamingdiensten voor BMW-modellen zullen in de herfst van 2023 op deze manier beschikbaar worden gesteld voor de meeste wagens met het BMW Operating System 8.5.

Klanten krijgen ook een melding van de Remote Software Upgrades in de My BMW-app. Een andere mogelijkheid bestaat erin om upgrades via de My BMW-app te downloaden en naar de wagen over te brengen alvorens daar het installatieproces te starten.

Extra functies voor de My BMW-app.

De My BMW-app voor smartphones biedt klanten een directe link met hun wagen en, naargelang de voertuigconfiguratie en het land, het voordeel van talloze functies die de dagelijkse mobiliteit nog eenvoudiger maken. Een voorbeeld daarvan zijn de gegevens die naar de smartphone van de gebruiker worden doorgestuurd en betrekking hebben op de status van zijn wagen, de onderhoudsvereisten, de laadstatus en het rijbereik, alsook toegang vanop afstand tot functies om de wagen te lokaliseren, de deuren te vergrendelen en ontgrendelen, de klimaatregeling te bedienen en de onmiddellijke omgeving van de wagen te controleren. Ook kan men laadroutes plannen via de My BMW-app en bestemmingsadressen van de smartphone naar het navigatiesysteem van de wagen verzenden. Vanaf de herfst van 2023 wordt het ook mogelijk om tussenstops in te voeren als onderdeel van het proces.

Vanaf maart 2024 kunnen klanten met compatibele Android-smartphones de My BMW-app ook gebruiken om de functies Remote Control Parking en Manoeuvre Assistant te bedienen die beschikbaar zijn in combinatie met het optionele Parking Assistant Professional en BMW Digital Key Plus. De My BMW-app geeft op geschikte voertuigen ook de status van het alarmsysteem aan en toont hoe het geheel of gedeeltelijk kan worden geactiveerd.

Bijkomende koetswerkkleur voor de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline, nieuwe 21" lichtmetalen velgen voor de 7 Reeks.

Kort na zijn lancering wordt al een nieuwe tint toegevoegd aan de koetswerkkleuren van de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline. De metaalkleur Fire Red zal vanaf november 2023 beschikbaar zijn voor de BMW i5 M60 xDrive Berline (elektriciteitsverbruik over de gemengde WLTP-cyclus: 20,6 – 18,2 kWh/100 km), alsook voor alle andere modelvarianten van de nieuwe zakenberline met het M-Sportpakket.

Vanaf november 2023 wordt een uiterst exclusief design van lichtmetalen velgen toegevoegd aan het optiegamma voor de BMW 7 Reeks. Tegelijkertijd worden ook 21" lichtmetalen velgen met multispakendesign van BMW Individual verkrijgbaar voor alle modelvarianten van de luxeberline. Ze hebben een tweekleurige afwerking en zijn voorzien van gemengde banden.

Munich. At the IAA Mobility 2023 international motor show in Munich, the BMW Group will be presenting the most recent highlights of its ongoing transformation in the key action areas of electrification, digitalisation and circularity. The latest new models with electrified powertrains from the BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad brands, plus Vision Vehicles and concepts for individual mobility in tomorrow’s world all serve to underline the company’s innovative strength in these fields. As the dawn of a new era in personal mobility approaches, the BMW Group is set to unveil its latest highlight, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, which brings together the Group’s development expertise in the three crucial disciplines for the future of mobility.

The IAA Mobility show is being staged in Munich for the second time. For the BMW Group and its brands, this provides an excellent opportunity to enter into constructive dialogue on the future of individual mobility with local people, as well as with visitors to the show from outside Munich and other stakeholders. The IAA Mobility Summit at the exhibition centre and the BMW Group’s Open Space at Max-Joseph-Platz in the heart of Munich will be the main arenas where BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad present their new products on 5 – 10 September 2023. Among the models visitors can acquaint themselves with here alongside the BMW Vision Neue Klasse is the fully electric BMW i5. And they can also experience the world premieres of the new fully electric MINI Cooper, new fully electric MINI Countryman and BMW CE 02 eParkourer.

Electric, digital, circular – the focus areas of the BMW Group.

The BMW Group’s presence at IAA Mobility 2023 revolves around the company’s rigorous focus on electric, digital and circular mobility for the future and the latest progress it has made in these areas. The BMW Vision Neue Klasse is joined by a selection of new models from across the Group’s brands whose electrified powertrains, digital innovations and resource-efficient manufacturing illustrate the ongoing process of change in a variety of ways.

The new products poised for launch by the BMW brand include the plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 5 Series. The new BMW i7 Protection – the first ever all-electric protection vehicle in the luxury sedan segment – is also making its debut at IAA Mobility 2023.

MINI is unveiling the members of the brand’s new model family for the first time with the help of two world premieres: the new fully electric MINI Cooper and new fully electric MINI Countryman will both be on show at the Open Space site. A new model with all-electric drive also forms the centrepiece of BMW Motorrad’s line-up at Max-Joseph-Platz. Conceived as a compact eParkourer with a trailblazing design, the new BMW CE 02 injects fresh impetus into the urban mobility scene.

Locally emission-free mobility sets the theme for the models on show.

The IAA Mobility show will be officially opened on 5 September at Munich’s exhibition centre. The BMW Group will be represented at its stand in Hall A2, where the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will be unveiled to kick off the event. The BMW i7 Protection all-electric protection vehicle will also be presented for the first time at the IAA Mobility Summit.

The IAA Mobility Summit is taking place under the banner “Experience Connected Mobility” and is aimed primarily at trade visitors. It will showcase trends and technological innovations for future mobility over the course of numerous talks, presentations and panel discussions. One of the central topics is the use of hydrogen as an energy source for current and future vehicles. BMW is carrying out pioneering work in this field with its development and practical testing of a Sports Activity Vehicle with a hydrogen-powered fuel-cell drive system. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is also being exhibited at the Summit.

Locally emission-free mobility is also the dominant theme for the models awaiting visitors to the Open Space site. BMW has at least one purely electrically powered representative in all relevant model segments. The brand is presenting its entire line-up to the public, ranging from the BMW iX1 compact Sports Activity Vehicle via the BMW i4 and BMW i5 to the BMW iX and the BMW i7 luxury sedan.

The Open Space at Max-Joseph-Platz can be visited free of charge on 5 – 9 September from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday 10 September from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, BMW Welt will continue to provide an attractive destination for all automotive enthusiasts during IAA Mobility 2023. The current model portfolios of the BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad brands are presented here, along with the latest BMW and MINI Lifestyle collections. Plus, starting on 2 September 2023, BMW Lifestyle together with BMW M GmbH will be running a GOODS WITH FREUDE pop-up store in the Hofstatt shopping centre at No. 10 Sendlinger Straße. Located just a few minutes’ walk away from the Open Space, the store will feature both familiar lifestyle articles and the new BMW Lifestyle collection.

World premiere: the BMW Vision Neue Klasse.

At IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Group is offering visitors a preview of the Neue Klasse – the forthcoming generation of models from BMW. The BMW Vision Neue Klasse brings together innovations from the areas of electrification, digitalisation and circularity in signature BMW style. The Vision Vehicle takes design, control/operation, efficiency and sustainability into a whole new dimension – one that it will be possible to experience on the road before long.

During IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will be on show at both the Summit and the Open Space. The new Vision Vehicle incorporates the latest innovations in the BMW Group’s key future-focused fields. It therefore builds on the BMW i Vision Circular and the BMW i Vision Dee – which have already demonstrated the BMW Group’s development expertise in the areas of circular economy and digitalisation – and combines their qualities with further new developments in exterior and interior design, user experience and powertrain and battery technology.

World premiere: the plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan.

As well as the all-electric BMW i5, the brand is exhibiting two other model variants with electrified powertrains at IAA Mobility 2023. As early as spring 2024, two models featuring state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid technology will be added to the new BMW 5 Series Sedan range. Their six-cylinder and four-cylinder in-line petrol engines from the new modular generation of Efficient Dynamics units will each be combined with the latest BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid systems. This will result in a notable increase in output and much sharper power delivery, while also significantly improving efficiency and electric range compared to the outgoing model generation.

The electric motor purpose-developed for the new plug-in hybrid system is integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission together with its power electronics. The highly integrated drive unit contributes up to 145 kW/197 hp to the maximum combined output of 360 kW/489 hp in the case of the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 1.1 – 0.8 l/100 km [256.8 – 353.1 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 22.5 – 20.1 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 24 – 19 g/km in WLTP cycle, provisional figures) and 220 kW/299 hp for the new BMW 530e Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 0.8 – 0.6 l/100 km [353.1 – 470.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 21.4 – 18.9 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 19 – 14 g/km in WLTP cycle, provisional figures).

A BMW-patented innovation has been used to enhance the electric motor’s power delivery in the new plug-in hybrid models: a pre-gearing stage enables the nominal torque of 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) to be increased to effective torque of up to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) at the transmission input for the motor. The compact electric motor is therefore able to boost torque by an amount that would normally only be possible using a larger unit and makes a clear difference both when accelerating off the line and putting in a rapid burst of speed. Electric range is now up to 79 – 90 kilometres (49 – 56 miles) in the WLTP cycle for the new BMW 550e xDrive Sedan and 87 – 101 kilometres (54 – 63 miles) in the WLTP cycle for the new BMW 530e Sedan.

The lithium-ion high-voltage battery’s space-saving positioning within the vehicle’s underbody has a beneficial effect on both the car’s centre of gravity and the capacity of its luggage compartment, which holds a total of 520 litres in the plug-in hybrid models – meaning it is just as large as that offered by their purely combustion-engined siblings. The usable energy provided by the high-voltage battery has climbed to 19.4 kWh. At the same time, maximum charging capacity has doubled compared to the outdoing models and now stands at 7.4 kW, enabling the high-voltage battery to be fully recharged from empty in 3.0 hours. When hooked up to a conventional domestic power socket, a full vehicle charge is completed in 9.8 hours.

World premiere: the BMW i7 Protection.

BMW is presenting a new generation of protection vehicles in the luxury sedan segment at the IAA Mobility 2023 show. The new BMW i7 Protection (electric power consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 30.0 kWh/100 km, provisional figure) is absolutely unique in this segment, as it is the world’s first ever certified protection sedan with an all-electric drive system. Driven by two powerful electric motors, it meets all the requirements of class VR9 protection without any limitations, as does the new V8-engined BMW 7 Series Protection (fuel consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 14.6 l/100 km [19.3 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions: 328 g/km, provisional figures).

Both models blend the integrated protection concept channelled into the development of the new BMW 7 Series range with outstanding levels of ride comfort and spaciousness, advanced equipment features and the unbeatable dynamic prowess for which BMW is renowned. The concept centres around the new and unique BMW Protection Core, which forms a self-supporting body structure made from armour steel. This is then combined with features such as additional armouring for the underbody and roof, plus armoured glass. The result is customised protection from attacks with firearms or explosives for at-risk individuals. The glass in the new protection vehicles even meets the requirements for the highest class of civilian protection, VPAM 10.

The all-electric BMW i7 Protection is equipped with one electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear. Together they generate a combined output of 400 kW/544 hp and maximum combined torque of 745 Nm (549 lb-ft), and create an electric all-wheel-drive system. The new BMW i7 Protection sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in 9.0 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 160 km/h (99 mph). The instantaneous, precisely orchestrated power delivery from the two motors guarantees exceptional traction and directional stability even when the car is being driven hard and performing challenging manoeuvres, such as when escaping from an attack.

Tuned and optimised specifically for this model, the chassis technology also makes allowance for the additional weight of its armouring, resulting in superbly assured performance in any situation. Another unique offering for this segment is the inclusion of Integral Active Steering as standard. This reduces the car’s turning circle, increases agility when cornering at speed and improves driving comfort for rear-seat passengers. The 20-inch light-alloy wheels are a further standout feature. The PAX tyres that also come as standard allow the car to continue its journey at up to 80 km/h (50 mph) even in the event of a total loss of pressure.

The latest generation of BMW iDrive based on BMW Operating System 8.5 is fitted, complete with the BMW Curved Display. The system is intuitive to use and operates in a way familiar to BMW drivers. The special functions relevant to occupant protection are also operated via BMW iDrive. The new protection vehicles can also be tailored precisely to any purpose, with items including a fresh-air supply system, a fire extinguishing system, flashing lights, radio transceivers and flag poles for when the car is on official duty, plus other special customer-specific options.

Trailblazing: the BMW iX5 Hydrogen.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen presented at IAA Mobility 2023 provides further evidence of the company’s superlative innovative strength in the field of drive technology. A pilot series of the Sports Activity Vehicle with hydrogen fuel-cell drive, developed on the basis of the current BMW X5, has entered service for demonstration and test purposes with various target groups around the world. This allows selected test groups who haven’t been involved in the development process to get behind the wheel of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen and gain a direct impression of its attributes for the first time.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is equipped with the latest, fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology. The highly integrated drive unit at the rear axle draws its energy from a high-performance battery with li-ion technology that was specially developed for the hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle and generates maximum output of 295 kW/401 hp. The electric motor also doubles as a generator that feeds energy back into the high-performance battery on the overrun or under braking.

The model’s two 700-bar tanks made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) together hold six kilograms of gaseous hydrogen and can be refilled in three to four minutes. A chemical reaction takes place in the fuel cell system between the hydrogen and oxygen from the air, through which the electric power for the electric motor is generated. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen achieves a range of 504 kilometres (313 miles) in the WLTP cycle without having to refill the tanks. The hydrogen-powered SAV completes the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in under six seconds and goes on to reach a top speed in excess of 180 km/h (112 mph).

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen combines long-distance capabilities and short refuelling stops with zero tailpipe emissions and hallmark BMW driving dynamics. Its hydrogen fuel-cell technology has the potential – provided the necessary basic conditions are in place – to serve as an additional pillar in the BMW Group’s future powertrain portfolio. As part of its ongoing transformation, the BMW Group is following an approach that embraces all technologies when it comes to drive systems. The company is therefore readying itself for differing customer requirements, infrastructure standards and political and regulatory frameworks in the various regions of the world. This degree of flexibility puts the BMW Group in a position to react quickly to changing requirements in the markets in any situation and to present as many customers as possible with an appropriate model offering at all times.

De marktlancering van de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline gaat in oktober 2023 van start. De nieuwe modelgeneratie zal wereldwijd worden aangeboden met een volledig elektrische aandrijving en, naargelang de marktregio, ook met plug-in-hybridesystemen en uiterst efficiënte benzine- en dieselmotoren met Mild Hybrid-technologie van 48 volt. Net als alle vorige modelgeneraties wordt de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline geproduceerd in de fabriek van de BMW Group in Dingolfing, waar ook de elektromotoren en hoogspanningsaccu’s voor de BMW i5 worden gemaakt.

Sportieve elegantie en opvallende présence met een nieuwe designtaal.

Een duidelijke en gereduceerde designtaal benadrukt de sportieve elegantie en présence van de nieuwe 5 Reeks Berline. In vergelijking met het vorige model is de nieuwe editie met 97 millimeter in de lengte gegroeid tot 5.060 millimeter, met 32 millimeter in de breedte tot 1.900 millimeter en met 36 millimeter in de hoogte tot 1.515 millimeter. De wielbasis groeide met 20 millimeter in de lengte tot 2.995 millimeter.

Vooraan wordt de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline gekenmerkt door een moderne interpretatie van de dubbele koplampen en de BMW nieren. Bijna verticaal geplaatste LED-elementen dienen als richtingaanwijzers en dagrijlichten. De ver naar voren uitspringende BMW nieren zijn voorzien van een brede rand en als optie verkrijgbare BMW Iconic Glow contourverlichting.

In zijaanzicht geven de hoge schouderlijn, krachtig vormgegeven oppervlakken en twee nauwkeurig getrokken karakterlijnen vorm aan het atletische koetswerk van de wagen. Andere blikvangers zijn de zwarte zijschorten, de verzonken deuropeners en het nummer 5 in reliëf onderaan de C-stijl. De dynamisch gerekte proporties vloeien over in een krachtige achterzijde. De vlakke achterlichten, gescheiden door een chroomstrip, zijn een expressieve interpretatie van de typische L-vorm.

Het dynamische karakter van de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline kan nog worden versterkt met het optionele M Sportpakket en het M Sport Pack Pro. Het assortiment koetswerkkleuren omvat bij de marktintroductie al drie BMW Individual lakkleuren.

Rijplezier en reiscomfort gecombineerd met innovatieve flair.

De nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline biedt de ideale omstandigheden om van het typische BMW rijplezier te genieten in het dagelijkse verkeer en van een hoog comfortpeil tijdens lange ritten. Een royale binnenruimte, moderne functionaliteit, een hoog akoestisch comfort en hoogwaardige, zorgvuldig verwerkte materialen, fijn vakmanschap en geavanceerde digitale diensten kenmerken de sfeer in het interieur.

De cockpit van de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks telt veel minder knoppen en bedieningselementen in vergelijking met het vorige model. Dat werd mogelijk gemaakt door de functies consequent te digitaliseren. Het BMW Curved Display herinterpreteert het merktypische idee van bestuurdergerichtheid. Het volledig digitale weergavesysteem bestaat uit een 12,3" Info Display en een 14,9" Control Display. Het stuur werd ook hertekend; het is nu afgeplat onderaan en heeft haptische feedback op de bedieningspanelen en de keuzehendel op de middenconsole. Een ander hoogtepunt is de BMW Interaction Bar. Deze functionele eenheid met achtergrondverlichting en kristallijne oppervlaktestructuur loopt over de hele breedte van het instrumentenbord tot ver in de deurpanelen en omvat aanraakgevoelige bedieningspanelen. De BMW Interaction Bar is standaard inbegrepen op de BMW i5 maar is niet beschikbaar op alle andere motorisaties.

Een primeur bij BMW: volledig vegan interieur.

Nieuw ontworpen sportzetels zijn standaard. De optionele comfortzetels bieden een brede waaier aan elektrisch bediende verstelmogelijkheden. De nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline is het eerste model van het merk dat standaard over een volledig vegan interieur beschikt. Dat omvat voor het eerst de oppervlakken van de zetels, het dashboard en de deurpanelen, alsook het stuur. De zeteloppervlakken in de Veganza-uitvoering met lederachtige eigenschappen zijn als optie ook verkrijgbaar met een decoratieve perforatie. Andere opties zijn onder meer de bekleding in BMW Individual leder Merino in verschillende tweekleurige uitvoeringen.

De volledig elektrische BMW i5 M60 xDrive als topmodel.

De volledig elektrische BMW i5 is uitgerust met de sterk verbeterde BMW eDrive-technologie van de vijfde generatie en wordt in twee varianten gelanceerd. De BMW i5 M60 xDrive (gecombineerd energieverbruik volgens de WLTP-cyclus: 20,6 - 18,2 kWh/100 km), die een vermogen van 442 kW/601 pk* combineert met de typische M prestaties en specifieke designkenmerken. Twee sterk geïntegreerde aandrijfeenheden op de voor- en achteras zorgen voor een elektrische vierwielaandrijving. Tot 820 Nm* systeemkoppel wordt gegenereerd wanneer de functie M Sport Boost of M Launch Control wordt geactiveerd. Daarmee kan de BMW i5 M60 in 3,8 seconden van nul naar 100 km/u accelereren. Zijn topsnelheid is elektrisch begrensd op 230 km/u.

De BMW i5 eDrive40 (gecombineerd energieverbruik volgens de WLTP-cyclus: 19,5 - 15,9 kWh/100 km) is ook beschikbaar. De elektromotor drijft de achterwielen aan en genereert een maximumvermogen van 250 kW/340 pk en een maximumkoppel tot 430 Nm met de functie Sport Boost of Launch Control. De BMW i5 eDrive40 accelereert van nul naar 100 km/u in 6,0 seconden. Zijn topsnelheid bedraagt 193 km/u.

De plaatsbesparende hoogspanningsaccu is ingebouwd in de bodemplaat en levert een bruikbare energie-inhoud van 81,2 kWh. Naast de efficiënte elektromotoren dragen ook de nieuwste versie van adaptieve recuperatie en een intelligente combinatie van warmtepomptechnologie voor de verwarming en koeling van het interieur, de aandrijving en de hoogspanningsaccu bij aan het grote rijbereik. De respectieve WLTP-waarden bedragen 455 - 516 kilometer voor de BMW i5 M60 xDrive en 477 - 582 kilometer voor de BMW i5 eDrive40. De nieuwe MAX RANGE-functie kan het rijbereik indien nodig tot 25 procent vergroten door het vermogen en de snelheid te beperken en de comfortfuncties uit te schakelen.

De Combined Charging Unit (CCU) van de BMW i5 maakt het mogelijk om op te laden met wisselstroom met een vermogen tot 11 kW standaard en tot 22 kW als optie. De hoogspanningsaccu kan opladen met gelijkstroom met een vermogen tot 205 kW. Zo kan het laadniveau van de accu in de BMW i5 in ongeveer 30 minuten van 10 naar 80 procent worden verhoogd.

Het nieuwe Connected Home Charging wordt aangeboden voor de BMW i5 en de plug-in-hybridemodellen. Het schept de voorwaarden voor geoptimaliseerd opladen voor zonne-energie en voor belasting (fase 1) en voor kostengeoptimaliseerd opladen op basis van een contract met een dynamisch elektriciteitstarief (fase 2, vanaf 2024). Daarnaast legt het aanbod van BMW Charging en zijn strategische partner E.ON de basis voor netwerken met de energiemarkt via bidirectioneel opladen in toekomstige voertuiggeneraties. De volledig elektrische modellen van de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks zijn ook de eerste wagens van het merk die geschikt zijn voor gebruik met de Plug & Charge-functie. Zo kan de wagen zich automatisch authenticeren aan compatibele openbare laadstations zonder een app of laadkaart te moeten gebruiken. Uniek is de ‘Multi Contract’-optie, waarmee klanten tot vijf individuele Plug & Charge-contracten van verschillende aanbieders digitaal kunnen opslaan in de wagen.

Nieuwe benzine- en dieselmotoren met Mild Hybrid-technologie van 48 volt.

Benzine- en dieselmotoren van de nieuwe modulaire generatie van de BMW Group Efficient Dynamics motoren zullen worden aangeboden als marktspecifieke selectie. Ze beschikken voortaan over de Mild Hybrid-technologie met 48V-accu en worden standaard gekoppeld aan de nieuwe 8-traps sportversnellingsbak Steptronic.

In Europa worden de viercilinder modellen BMW 520i Berline (gecombineerd brandstofverbruik: 6,4 – 5,7 l/100 km; CO₂-uitstoot: 144 – 130 g/km volgens WLTP-cyclus) met 153 kW/208 pk, de BMW 520d Berline (gecombineerd brandstofverbruik: 5,6 – 5,1 l/100 km; CO₂-uitstoot: 147 – 133 g/km volgens de WLTP-cyclus) en de BMW 520d xDrive Berline (gecombineerd brandstofverbruik: 6,0 – 5,5 l/100 km; CO₂-uitstoot: 157 – 143 g/km volgens de WLTP-cyclus), elk met 145 kW/197 pk, op de markt gebracht. Buiten Europa zijn andere benzinemotoren met vier en zes cilinders verkrijgbaar. Het modellengamma wordt in de lente van 2024 aangevuld met twee varianten met plug-in-hybrideaandrijvingen van de nieuwste generatie. Een nieuwe zescilinder-in-lijn dieselmotor zal vanaf 2024 beschikbaar zijn voor de BMW 5 Reeks Berline. In de loop van 2024 volgt nog een andere variant van de BMW i5 met elektrische vierwielaandrijving.

Uniek evenwicht tussen rijdynamiek en reiscomfort.

Het kenmerkende evenwicht tussen maximale sportiviteit en een hoog langeafstandscomfort van de BMW 5 Reeks Berline wordt in de nieuwe editie nog maar eens versterkt. De langste wielbasis in het hogere middenklassesegment, grotere spoorbreedte vooraan en achteraan, bijna perfect uitgebalanceerde gewichtsverdeling van 50: 50 tussen voor- en achteras, intelligente lichtgewicht constructie en hogere stijfheid van de verbinding tussen koetswerk en chassis dragen hiertoe bij.

De uiterst geavanceerde chassistechnologie werd net als de controlesystemen specifiek aangepast aan de gewichtsverdeling van de respectieve aandrijftechnologie. Het omvat standaard een direct gestuurde wielslipbeperking, een geïntegreerd remsysteem en Sport Steering met variabele stuurverhouding. Als optie zijn een M sportophanging, M sportremmen en de adaptieve ophanging Professional (standaard op de BMW i5 M60 xDrive en BMW 550e xDrive, standaard op de BMW i5 eDrive40) met elektronisch gestuurde schokdempers, Integral Active Steering (standaard op de BMW i5 M60 xDrive en BMW 550e xDrive, standaard op de BMW i5 eDrive40) en nieuw Vertical Dynamics Management verkrijgbaar. De adaptieve M ophanging Professional (optioneel op de BMW 550e xDrive en BMW i5 M60 xDrive) omvat ook actieve rolstabilisatie met actief rolcomfort. Lichtmetalen velgen van 18" of 19" (BMW i5 en plug-in-hybridemodellen) behoren tot de standaarduitrusting. Als optie zijn lichtmetalen velgen tot 21" en sportbanden verkrijgbaar.

Intens geautomatiseerd rijden: nieuwe snelwegassistent, unieke Active Lange Change Assistant.

Een aanzienlijk uitgebreid gamma systemen voor geautomatiseerd rijden en parkeren is standaard of als optie verkrijgbaar op de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline. Een innovatieve technologiekit schept de voorwaarden voor hun uitstekende functionaliteit.

Het hoogtepunt van het gamma is het optionele Driving Assistant Pack Professional met Steering & Lane Control Assistant en Distance Control met Stop&Go functie. Op de automarkten in de VS, Canada en Duitsland omvat het de snelwegassistent, die de bestuurder ontlast van stuurtaken op snelwegen met structureel gescheiden rijstroken. Bij snelheden tot 130 km/u kunt u comfortabel de handen van het stuur nemen zolang u het verkeer in de gaten houdt. Als wereldprimeur omvat het systeem in de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks nu ook de Active Lane Change Assistant met oogactivering. Deze comfortfunctie tilt de interactie tussen de bestuurder en de wagen naar een hoger niveau. De wagen stelt een verandering van rijstrook voor en die kan voor het eerst worden uitgevoerd door in de buitenspiegel te kijken om de verandering van rijstrook te bevestigen. De Active Lane Change Assistant neemt automatisch de nodige stuurbewegingen over, afhankelijk van de verkeerssituatie. Deze functie is niet beschikbaar voor de Belgische en Luxemburgse markt.

De nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline is standaard uitgerust met Parking Assistant Pack, inclusief Reversing Assistant. Met het optionele Parking Assistant Pack Professional kan de bestuurder automatisch parkeren en manoeuvreren vanuit de wagen of tot op 200 meter afstand via een smartphone buiten de wagen.

Intuïtieve bediening en nieuwe digitale ervaringen: BMW iDrive met "QuickSelect" en BMW Operating System 8.5.

Het verbeterde BMW iDrive display en bedieningssysteem met "QuickSelect" draagt ook bij tot de kenmerkende rij- en reiservaring in de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline. Het is gebaseerd op het BMW Operating System 8.5 en omvat een hertekend startscherm met verticaal opgestelde functiepictogrammen aan bestuurderszijde. "QuickSelect" maakt het mogelijk om functies rechtstreeks te openen zonder naar een submenu te moeten gaan. Dit betekent dat het systeem een verbeterde menustructuur heeft gekregen, gericht op apparaten uit de sector van de consumentenelektronica.

De nieuwe BMW iDrive wordt ook gecombineerd met het BMW Curved Display en de BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Het is consequent ontworpen om te worden bediend door middel van een aanraakscherm en natuurlijke taal. Daarnaast beschikt de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline ook over toetsen op het stuur en de BMW iDrive Controller op de middenconsole. De optionele BMW Live Cockpit Navigation Professional omvat het BMW Head-Up Display en Augmented View op het Control Display of de instrumentencombi. De optie BMW Natural Interaction is ook beschikbaar om functies te bedienen door middel van gebaren.

Gaming in de wagen maakt zijn debuut in de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline.

Daarnaast biedt het BMW Operating System 8.5 een breder scala aan digitale inhoud voor informatie en entertainment, snellere updatecycli voor functies, verbeterde informatie over oplaadpunten voor elektrische wagens en geoptimaliseerde toegang tot tal van specifieke online diensten. Videostreaming is mogelijk op het Control Display, net als een innovatieve vorm van gaming in de wagen die voor het eerst wordt voorgesteld in de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline met het AirConsole-platform. Bestuurder en passagiers kunnen zogenaamde casual games spelen terwijl de wagen stilstaat, bijvoorbeeld om wachttijden te overbruggen tijdens het opladen van de hoogspanningsaccu van de BMW i5.

Optimaal netwerken met maximaal vier mobiele 5G-antennes.

Andere innovaties zijn onder meer het welkomstscenario met lichtshow en persoonlijke verwelkoming, dat optioneel ook het dynamische lichttapijt omvat. De BMW Digital Key Plus is nu beschikbaar voor compatibele smartphones met het iOS- of Android-besturingssysteem en voor de Apple Watch. Met twee standaard 5G-antennes voor mobiele telefoons en vier als optie biedt de nieuwe businessberline een geoptimaliseerde connectiviteit en telefoonkwaliteit. De Personal eSIM integreert de wagen volledig in het digitale ecosysteem van de klant. In bepaalde landen maakt de BMW ID het mogelijk om parkeerkosten automatisch te betalen vanuit de wagen.

De nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline biedt de keuze uit maximaal zes My Modes om in de wagen een totaalervaring te bieden. De standaarduitrusting omvat ook een geoptimaliseerde smartphone-integratie via Apple CarPlay® en Android Auto™. Met de functie Remote Software Upgrades blijft de wagen altijd up-to-date met de nieuwste software. Met BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades kunnen klanten bepaalde functies ook gratis uittesten voor een periode van een maand en ze vervolgens voor een specifieke periode boeken.

De marktlancering van de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline luidt een nieuw hoofdstuk in op het gebied van klantenservice. Met Proactive Care creëert BMW een nieuw platform voor uitwisselingen met klanten wanneer verschillende soorten onderhoud vereist zijn. De focus ligt ook op het herkennen van de onderhoudsbehoeften van de wagen door het gebruik van artificiële intelligentie en het proactief aanbieden van oplossingen aan de klant.

München. Het ontwikkelingsproces van de eerste BMW i5 in serieproductie gaat de eerste rechte lijn in met de verfijning van de ophanging en de rijhulpsystemen. Slechts enkele weken voor de wereldpremière van de auto is duidelijk dat de volledig elektrische versie van de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline een uitstekende rijervaring zal bieden - net als alle andere varianten. Het innovatieve Vertical Dynamics Management tilt de balans tussen sportiviteit en rijcomfort, waar de BMW 5 Reeks altijd al bekend om stond, naar een nog hoger niveau. En ook de geautomatiseerde rijcapaciteiten van de auto krijgen een nieuwe dimensie met de Highway Assistant, die voor het eerst de afstand tot de voorligger regelt, de besturing aanpast en van rijstrook wisselt door middel van oogactivering.

In de loop van meer dan een jaar heeft de BMW i5 een zeer gevarieerd testprogramma doorlopen - van de besneeuwde en beijzelde oppervlakken van het wintertestcentrum in Arjeplog, Zweden tot regio's met extreme hitte en droge omstandigheden, in de stad en op landwegen, op snelwegen en zorgvuldig uitgekozen testcircuits. De fijnafstelling van alle componenten die bij de rijervaring betrokken zijn, werd vervolgens uitgevoerd op het testterrein van BMW Group buiten Miramas in Zuid-Frankrijk. Daarbij werd er onder meer voor gezorgd dat het integrale verwarmings- en koelcircuit met warmtepompfunctie voor de aandrijving, de hoogspanningsaccu en het interieur van de BMW i5 te allen tijde naar wens kan worden geregeld. Het voorspellende warmtebeheer van de hoogspanningsaccu maakt de weg vrij voor snel en efficiënt laden bij gelijkstroom-snellaadstations.

Speciaal afgestemde veersystemen zorgen voor maximaal comfort en wendbaarheid.

De flexibele aandrijftechniek van de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks - die de klant nu de keuze biedt tussen klassieke verbrandingsmotoren, plug-in hybride oplossingen en volledig elektrische aandrijvingen - leidt tot grote variaties in het voertuiggewicht. De modelspecifieke, individuele onderstelafstemming en de overeenkomstige toepassing van alle regelsystemen zorgen dan ook voor typisch BMW rijplezier, ongeacht het aandrijfconcept.

Als topmodel is de BMW i5 M60 xDrive (gecombineerd elektriciteitsverbruik: 21,2 - 17,9 kWh/100 km; CO2 uitstoot: 0 g/km in de WLTP-cyclus [voorlopige cijfers]) is standaard uitgerust met Adaptive Suspension Professional inclusief elektronisch gestuurde dempers. Dit veersysteem kan ook als optie worden geleverd voor de BMW i5 eDrive40 (gecombineerd elektriciteitsverbruik: 19,7 - 16,0 kWh/100 km; CO2 uitstoot: 0 g/km in de WLTP-cyclus [voorlopige cijfers]). Dankzij een innovatieve vorm van BMW Vertical Dynamics Management biedt hij een merkbare toename van de sportieve prestaties in combinatie met een niveau van rijcomfort dat ook een duidelijke stap voorwaarts betekent ten opzichte van dat van zijn voorganger.

De nieuwste versie van BMW's Vertical Dynamics Management, nu in zijn negende generatie, maakt zijn debuut in de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline. Deze technologie is gebaseerd op een nieuw ontwikkelde, uitgebreid genetwerkte besturingslogica en houdt rekening met alle beschikbare inputvariabelen - zoals wielsnelheden, stuurhoek, giersnelheid en acceleratie - om de ideale dempingskrachten te bepalen. Het systeem berekent de vereiste dempingskrachten niet langer aan de hand van wiskundige modellen, maar geeft de voorkeur aan fysieke berekening van gegevens over de actuele rijomstandigheden. Dit zorgt in elke rijsituatie voor een duidelijk gedefinieerde carrosseriecontrole en een nauwkeurige respons van de vering.

Adaptive Suspension Professional wordt aangeboden voor alle varianten van de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline (standaard of optioneel, afhankelijk van het model) en zorgt voor het gebruikelijke rijplezier van BMW. De nieuwe generatie van de zakenBerline combineert dus rijcomfort dat het niveau van de BMW 7 Reeks benadert met de sportieve wendbaarheid die we kennen van de BMW 3 Reeks.

Een nieuwe ervaring van geautomatiseerd rijden: Snelwegassistent en automatische rijstrookverandering met oogactivering.

Ook de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline legt de lat in zijn segment hoger met een uitgebreide reeks systemen voor automatisch rijden en parkeren. Camera's met hoge resolutie, uiterst precieze radarsensoren en controle-eenheden uit de nieuwste technologische toolkit van de BMW Group, plus een softwaretoepassing die na ontelbare testkilometers is verfijnd, vormen de ingrediënten voor een geautomatiseerde rijervaring met innovatieve highlights die de veiligheid en het comfort verder verhogen.

In de Verenigde Staten en Canada, en nu ook in Duitsland, omvat de Driving Assistant Professional die als optie verkrijgbaar is voor de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline Highway Assistant, die gebruikt kan worden bij snelheden tot 130 km/u (81 mph). Na activering zorgt het systeem voor de afstandscontrole en de stuurcommando's voor de rijstrookcontrole, zodat de bestuurder zijn handen in een comfortabele positie kan houden en zich volledig kan concentreren op het overzien van de omgeving en de verkeerssituatie.

Een interieurcamera helpt het alertheidsniveau van de bestuurder te controleren en maakt ook een andere innovatie mogelijk: als wereldprimeur kan de automatische rijstrookverandering - als onderdeel van de Driving Assistant Professional en Highway Assistant - in de nieuwe BMW 5 Reeks Berline bediend worden met behulp van oogactivering. Deze gemaksfunctie resulteert in een nieuw niveau van interactie tussen mens en auto. Door in de buitenspiegel te kijken, kan de auto de rijstrookverandering starten en de nodige stuurbewegingen en snelheidsaanpassingen uitvoeren bij snelheden tot 130 km/u (81 mph), zodra de bestuurder heeft bevestigd dat hij dat wil en de verkeerssituatie dat toelaat. Het puur visuele gebaar vormt een aanvulling op het eerdere gebruik van de richtingaanwijzerhendel, die ook als alternatief beschikbaar is.

De productie van de nieuwe, achtste generatie BMW 5 Serie Berline begint in de zomer van 2023 in de BMW Group fabriek Dingolfing in Beieren. De marktintroductie van de auto begint in oktober 2023.

Munich. The first-ever BMW 5 Series with a fully electric drive system has yet to make its global debut, but it has already come through the ultimate endurance test. The new BMW i5 repeatedly demonstrated both the stability of its electric powertrain and its dynamic performance qualities over the course of arduous test drives in wintry conditions. The programme of testing on ice and snow lasted about a year in all, from the initial test runs to the final stages of fine-tuning. During the extensive testing on country roads, motorways and specially prepared test tracks, the development engineers mainly focused their attention on the car’s ability to drive at low temperatures and on surfaces offering little grip.

The innovative powertrain and chassis control systems on board the new BMW i5 do a great deal to optimise its traction, dynamism and driving stability, and nowhere is this more apparent than on a solid blanket of snow, icy mountain roads or frozen lakes. It was only right that the dynamic winter testing of the purely electrically powered sedan recently finished exactly where it began: in the biting cold of the BMW Group’s winter test centre at Arjeplog, northern Sweden.

As part of the production development process, the new BMW i5 first had to prove its mettle back in February 2022, when it completed a road trip from Munich to the BMW test centre at Arjeplog. A prototype model of the all-electric BMW 5 Series fully camouflaged with a special wrap, plastic attachments, grilles and provisional headlights and rear lights set off on a five-day test drive from the foothills of the Bavarian Alps up to Denmark, then on to the edge of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland.

The journey of around 3,000 kilometres (1,850 miles) provided an early opportunity for the motors, power electronics, high-voltage battery and integrated heating and cooling system for the cabin and battery pack to demonstrate their advanced level of readiness on a long-distance journey. Featuring cutting-edge battery cell technology and intelligently controlled thermal management, the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology – further upgraded for the new BMW i5 – forms the basis for long ranges and short charging times during breaks in the journey, even in extreme sub-zero ambient temperatures.

The final destination of Arjeplog provided the team of development and test engineers with the ideal venue for their test programme. The snow-covered roads and frozen lakes of northern Sweden, with their vast expanses of ice, create the perfect setting for exploring how the chassis components, steering and braking systems, and driving dynamic and driving stability systems all interact with one another in extreme outdoor conditions. As a result, the groundwork for the authoritative, assured and characteristically sporty handling of the new BMW i5 were already laid in the first test drives in Arjeplog.

Testing in everyday driving and on wintry roads in the foothills of the Alps.

This was followed by more testing over the course of 2022, both at other
BMW Group test facilities and in everyday driving in and around Munich as well as in the vicinity of BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. The task here was to continue refining the car’s chassis technology and acoustic properties under a wide variety of conditions, as well as honing the drive unit’s power delivery, in order to produce a well-resolved driving experience at all times.

Here again, part of the development work was deliberately carried out during the colder months on icy and snowy roads in the Alpine foothills. This last winter, BMW i5 prototypes – now sporting less camouflage and near-production headlights – were regularly sent out for testing to verify the functionality and reliability of their powertrain and chassis control systems in extremely demanding road and weather conditions. The BMW engineers involved in the vehicle project were able to directly inspect the current state of development through testing in the BMW brand’s native Bavaria before it was time to return to endurance testing near the Arctic Circle in February 2023.

BMW i5 thrills with its unrivalled handling on ice and snow.

The purpose of this second round of testing in Sweden was to fine-tune all powertrain and chassis control systems. Thanks to their low-grip surfaces, the test areas sited on frozen lakes around Arjeplog were particularly well suited for delicately adjusting the drive torque control system in the BMW i5 under precisely reproducible conditions. In the new BMW i5, the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system, the near-actuator wheel slip limitation function and the drive torque control system are interlinked so that they can interact and complement each other flexibly in any driving situation. As a result, the all-electric sedan performs at least as proficiently as any conventionally powered model on ice and snow.

The integrated application of all powertrain and chassis systems underpins the outstanding handling abilities displayed by the BMW i5 in winter testing. The more challenging the conditions, the more impressive were the speed and precision of the control systems in the fully electric version of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. The BMW i5 serves up a harmonious blend of optimum traction when pulling away and supreme driving stability when cornering or braking, which is unique in the competitive environment.
