Munich/Arjeplog. The BMW 3 Series has been the embodiment of driving pleasure in the premium midsize class for five decades. All over the world, this icon of the BMW brand is renowned for its superior sportiness, precise handling and effortless agility, combined with long-distance driving comfort. As the latest generation BMW 3 Series is getting ready for launch, so is the first sedan model of the Neue Klasse: the fully electric BMW i3. Prototypes are currently undergoing a comprehensive test programme at the BMW Group winter test centre in Arjeplog, Sweden.

The BMW i3 will have its design premiere on 18 March 2026. The new fully electric model generation features a sixth-generation eDrive (Gen6). “The BMW i3 applies the sporty sedan’s typical characteristics to a completely new vehicle concept defined by the BMW 3 Series DNA. At the same time, pushing the conventional boundaries of electric mobility into new territory, thanks to the potential of our Neue Klasse,” says Mike Reichelt, Head of Neue Klasse BMW. The control unit consisting of the “superbrain” Heart of Joy and the BMW Dynamic Performance Control driving stack takes driving dynamics to an entirely new level. As the BMW i3 approaches series-production readiness, the test and development team is performing the final fine-tuning of driving dynamics components on the snow-covered roads and frozen lakes of Sweden.

Test drives for fine-tuning in extremely cold weather are a key part of vehicle testing. 
Endurance tests in freezing temperatures and wintry road conditions in Sweden’s extreme north are a long-standing BMW tradition. The snow-covered roads around Arjeplog and the specially prepared surfaces of frozen lakes provide the ideal environment for evaluating and fine-tuning drive and suspension systems Electronic control systems are a good example – the low friction coefficients of surfaces covered by snow and ice enable engineers to test, analyse and optimise the interactions of these systems under precisely reproducible conditions. This provides the foundation of the hallmark BMW driving pleasure. 

Highly innovative overall concept is key to an outstanding driving experience.
The Heart of Joy is one of four “superbrains” in the Neue Klasse. Complemented by the BMW Dynamic Performance Control software developed in-house, it forms the powerful new driving and dynamics control unit in the BMW i3, controlling the powertrain, brakes and some steering functions along with recuperation. Its responses are ten times faster than with previous systems. The result of this technological quantum leap is evident in the particularly effortless and exceptionally precise handling of the new BMW i3.

Even on slippery surfaces like those in Arjeplog, the Heart of Joy ensures agile propulsion. In addition, the extremely fast control of the two electric motors ensures superior driving stability. Only electric motors are capable of processing and executing the lightning-fast commands. This enables the BMW i3 to deliver a light-footed and comfortable drive in every situation. And with typical BMW 3 Series characteristics, it sets new standards in driving dynamics.

Even at the limits, the BMW i3 offers an extremely safe driving experience.
The new BMW i3 can be controlled with maximum precision. It responds instantly to steering inputs and creates a feeling of effortlessness. The Heart of Joy reduces the number of control interventions required – for example by the DSC system. The resulting cornering behaviour is more consistent and reproducible, giving the driver an even greater sense of assurance. In addition, the BMW i3 remains easy to control even when approaching the limits. The Soft-Stop function of the new BMW i3 is exceptional: precise control of the electric motors enables the smoothest stopping process in the history of the BMW 3 Series, without jerks and brake noise. The exceptional stability that the Heart of Joy provides, even on slippery surfaces like those found in Arjeplog, also improves efficiency. The precise control processes of the Heart of Joy allow the BMW i3 to recuperate energy as often and as intensely as possible, even when cornering, without compromising driving stability. “Sheer driving pleasure” redefined.

Munich. The sales launch of the BMW iX and the BMW i4 in November 2021 marks the beginning of a new era of purely electric premium mobility. In addition to sustainable driving pleasure, the two new models also offer the latest innovations in the field of driver assistance systems and, with the new generation of the BMW iDrive operating system, represent the future of intuitive interaction between driver and vehicle. Parallel to this, the BMW model range will also undergo targeted further development in autumn 2021. Additional drive variants and innovations in the areas of design and digital services increase the diversity and attractiveness of the current range.

The model range of the new BMW 4 Series Convertible will be expanded by three new drive variants from November 2021. In future, an 8-speed Steptronic transmission will be standard equipment for one additional model variant each of the BMW X1 and the BMW X2. New paint finishes are available for the BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, BMW X2, BMW X3 and BMW X4 models. The functional scope of the My BMW App is complemented by further digital services. The BMW i brand is not only setting trends with its two new models. The pioneer of all-electric premium mobility, the BMW i3, will be offered in a limited Unique Forever Edition from November 2021. And in the BMW iX3, a predictive battery heat management system will optimise the way in which DC fast charging stations will be used in the future.

BMW 4 Series Convertible: Two additional BMW M automobiles and a further all-wheel drive model.
The combination of sporty performance and open-air pleasure in a BMW 4 Series model will be enriched even further in autumn 2021. In the new BMW M 440i Convertible (combined fuel consumption: 8.3 – 7.7 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂ emissions: 190 - 175 g/km according to WLTP), a 275 kW/374 hp inline 6-cylinder petrol engine with 48-volt mild hybrid technology ensures particularly purist driving pleasure by transferring its power to the rear wheels. An 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission and an M sports differential in the final drive also contribute to the thrilling driving dynamics as standard. This is reflected, among other things, by accerlation from 0 - 100 km/h from standstill in 5.2 seconds.

An inline 6-cylinder diesel engine and the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system make the second new BMW M automobile a thrilling open-top drive. With a peak output of 250 kW/340 hp, a maximum torque of 700 Nm and 48-volt mild hybrid technology, the new BMW M440d xDrive Convertible (combined fuel consumption: 6.6 – 6.0 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂ emissions: 172 - 157 g/km according to WLTP) has impressive pulling power. 5.0 seconds are sufficient for the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h. An 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission and an M sports differential are also standard equipment in this model variant.

In addition, the model range for the open-top four-seater in the premium mid-size segment is expanded to include the new BMW 430i xDrive Convertible (combined fuel consumption: 8.1 – 7.3 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂ emissions: 183 - 166 g/km according to WLTP). With its 180 kW/245 hp 4-cylinder petrol engine, an 8-speed Steptronic transmission and intelligent all-wheel drive, it accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. The 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission and the M sports differential are optionally available for this model.

BMW X1 xDrive18d and BMW X2 xDrive18d now feature 8-speed Steptronic transmission as standard.
Driving pleasure and comfort will be enhanced in autumn 2021 as the 8-speed Steptronic transmission is included in further model variants of the BMW X1 and BMW X2 as standard. The fast and efficient automatic transmission is characterised by a high level of shifting comfort and a particularly favourable internal efficiency. In future, it will also be available as standard with the 110 kW/150 hp 4-cylinder diesel engine of the BMW X1 xDrive18d models (combined fuel consumption: 6.1 – 5.4 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂ emissions: 159 – 142 g/km according to WLTP) and the BMW X2 xDrive18d (combined fuel consumption: 6.1 – 5.4 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO₂ emissions: 160 - 142 g/km according to WLTP).

With the new drive combination, both models accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 9.4 seconds. An optional 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission is also available, operated by paddle shifts on the steering wheel.

New paint finishes for numerous model series.
New paint finishes for numerous current BMW models allow for additional customisation opportunities. The Skyscraper Grey metallic variant will be available for the BMW 1 Series, the BMW X2 and the BMW X3 from November 2021. Also new to the range are the BMW Individual paint finishes Frozen Pure Grey metallic for the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, as well as Aventurine Red metallic for the BMW X3 and the BMW X4.

My BMW App with extended range of functions.
Planning travel routes and transferring them to the car, receiving information about the car’ status and live images from its surroundings, arranging service appointments or receiving news from the brand - the My BMW app makes all this possible on the customer's smartphone. It serves as a universal interface for communication between car and customer, the BMW brand and the BMW dealer. The range of functions of the My BMW App will be expanded again in autumn 2021. In future, for example, the images transmitted by the Remote 3D View service will be stored in a gallery, including information about the location and time of the shots. The status of the vehicle's air conditioning and ventilation is now also clearly displayed in the My BMW app.

In addition, the My BMW app now also provides drivers with comprehensive information on the condition of the vehicle's tyres on their smartphone. This new feature helps to minimise the risk of breakdowns and is available for the BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series models, the new BMW 2 Series Coupé, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, the BMW Z4 as well as the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7. The My BMW app displays the wheel-specific values as measured by the tyre pressure system. In addition, the digital tyre diagnosis, which is unique in the competitive environment, can also transmit information about a defect or wear of the tyres via the My BMW app. In the BMW backend, the data from the tyre pressure control system is processed together with the values for temperature and wheel speeds to create a forecast of the remaining life of the tyres. As a supplement to tyre pressure control, indications of tyre damage are also registered.

Intelligent battery heat management for the BMW iX3.
To ensure the fastest and most efficient power feed at DC fast-charging stations, regardless of operating and outside temperatures, the BMW iX3 (combined power consumption: 19.0 - 18.6 L/100 km according to WLTP, 18.5 - 18.9 L/100 km according to NEDC) will be equipped with intelligent thermal management for the high-voltage battery as in the BMW i4 / BMW iX from November 2021. As soon as the active route guidance of the navigation system foresees a stopover at a High Power Charging Station, it already ensures that the battery is automatically preconditioned before arrival.

The appropriate heating or cooling ensures that the high-voltage battery is at the ideal temperature for charging at maximum power on arrival. The thermal management takes into account, among other things, the battery temperature, the remaining range, the predicted charging power and the planned scope of the charging process as part of the overall route calculation.

BMW i3 and BMW i3s in the Unique Forever Edition.
From November 2021, the BMW i3 models (combined electricity consumption: 16.3 - 15.3 L/100 km according to WLTP, 13.1 L/100 km according to NEDC and BMW i3s (combined electricity consumption: 16.6 - 16.3 L/100 km according to WLTP, 14.6 - 14.0 L/100 km according to NEDC) in the Unique Forever Edition. The naming of the new special edition refers to the unique character of the world's first premium automobile designed from the outset for purely electric mobility. The BMW i3 represents a holistic understanding of sustainability not only with its drive system, but also with its particularly lightweight passenger cell made of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and extensive use of natural and recycled materials in its interior. Eight years after being launched on the market, it is still a globally recognised symbol of locally emission-free urban mobility.

The edition vehicles are characterised by particularly high-grade and exclusive design and equipment features. The two BMW Individual paint finishes, available for the first time for the BMW i3, ensure a stylish appearance. The Aventurine Red metallic variant is combined with an accent in Frozen Grey metallic and the Storm Bay metallic paint finish with an accent in Frozen E-Copper. The interior surfaces of the BMW grille are also finished in the respective accent colour. Other special features include the omission of the trim strip and model lettering on the luggage compartment lid and a black insert for the rear bumper. In the interior of the edition vehicles, the contents of the Suite equipment world - including the Vernasca Dark Truffle leather combination, the leather instrument panel, the fine wood surface in dark matt oak, the leather steering wheel, the Carum grey roof lining and the ambient lighting - are supplemented by specific design elements. The front headrests are embroidered with the words "Unique Forever", the door trim panels in the area of the exterior mirrors bear the inscription "One of 2,000“.

The Unique Forever Edition models are produced in a limited edition of 2,000 units at the BMW plant in Leipzig. Only electricity generated by the wind turbines on the factory premises is used.

Increased efficiency through consistent electrification, optimised emissions and innovations in the areas of driver assistance and digital services are the focus of the model revision measures for numerous BMW model series that will take effect in autumn 2020. From November 2020, all models of the premium brand will meet the requirements of the currently strictest exhaust emission standard Euro 6d. In the BMW 5 Series, the range of plug-in hybrid models has been extended by three new variants. New inline 6-cylinder diesel engines and 48-volt mild hybrid technology lower fuel consumption and emissions of selected models in the BMW 3 Series and BMW 8 Series. In addition, further engines will supplement the drive portfolio of the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé.

Efficiency becomes more diverse: World premiere for five plug-in hybrid models in the BMW 5 Series.
The range of BMW models with electrified drive systems will also be consistently expanded in autumn 2020. The expanded range of the following electrified models is especially attractive: BMW 545e xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 2.3 – 2.2 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.3 – 15.8 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 53 – 49 g/km; electric range: 47 – 57 km), BMW 530e Touring (combined fuel consumption: 2.0 – 1.8 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.1 – 15.4 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 46 – 42 g/km; electric range: 52 – 57 km (WLTP)) and BMW 530e xDrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 2.4 – 2.2 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.7 – 16.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 54 – 50 g/km; electric range: 48 – 53 km (WLTP)). The BMW 5 Series model range now already includes five plug-in hybrid variants. In the upper mid-size class, BMW offers the largest selection of models with electrified drive.

In the new BMW 545e xDrive Sedan, an inline 6-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission deliver impressive driving dynamics in a particularly efficient manner. The power of the two drive units adds up to a maximum system output of 290 kW/394 hp and is distributed between the front and rear wheels as required by the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive. The brand’s hallmark combination of energy efficiency and sportiness also characterises the new Touring models, whose plug-in hybrid system consists of a 4-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive system also integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission. Together they generate a system output of up to 215 kW/292 hp in the XtraBoost mode when load requirements are particularly high.

Increased dynamic performance and reduced fuel consumption: New inline 6-cylinder diesel engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology in the BMW 3 Series and BMW 8 Series.
With the introduction of 48-volt mild hybrid technology in additional models, BMW continues to consistently reduce fuel consumption and emissions in its current vehicle fleet. This is linked to the introduction of a new generation of inline 6-cylinder diesel engines. As of autumn 2020, four mid-size models of the BMW 3 Series and three luxury sports cars of the BMW 8 Series will offer noticeably more dynamic performance and increased efficiency.

This twofold and BMW typical progress is achieved through further advanced BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and additionally with the aid of a particularly powerful starter generator and an additional battery. The dynamic power delivery when starting off and accelerating is enhanced by the additional power of 8 kW/11 hp spontaneously provided by the 48-volt starter generator. In other load ranges the electric drive can relieve the combustion engine and thus increase its efficiency. The power required for this is generated by intensive recuperation in braking and thrust phases and stored in a 48-volt battery, which also supplies the vehicle’s electrical system.

The 48-volt mild hybrid technology will be used in four further BMW 3 Series models from November 2020. In the new BMW 330d Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 4.7 – 4.4 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 125 – 116 g/km*) and the new BMW 330d Xdrive Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 5.0 – 4.7 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 132 – 123 g/km*) and the new BMW 330d Touring (combined fuel consumption: 4.8 – 4.5 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 128 – 119 g/km*) and the new BMW 330d Xdrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 5.2 – 4.8 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 136 – 127 g/km), it supports the new inline 6-cylinder diesel engine, which already provides additional driving pleasure with its maximum output increased by 15 kW/21 hp to 210 kW/286 hp. Thanks to a two-stage turbocharging system and an advanced common rail injection system whose piezo injectors now inject the fuel with up to ten injections per working cycle and a maximum pressure of 2 700 bar into the combustion chambers, engine response and efficiency of the 3.0 litre engine are optimised. The new diesel engine generates its maximum torque, which has been increased by 30 to 650 Nm, between 1 500 and 2 500 rpm. The increased power of the combustion engine and the additional electrical power noticeably improve the car’s sprint capacity. For example, the new BMW 330d Sedan improves its acceleration from zero to 100 km/h by 0.2 seconds to now 5.3 seconds.

In the BMW 8 Series, 48-volt mild hybrid technology is combined with an equally new and even more powerful 3.0-litre diesel engine. The BMW 840d xDrive Coupé models (fuel consumption combined: 5.8 – 5.6 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 154 - 146 g/km), BMW 840d xDrive Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 6.0 – 5.7 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 159 – 151 g/km) and BMW 840d xDrive Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 5.9 – 5.6 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 155 - 148 g/km) will be powered by a 250 kW/340 hp inline 6-cylinder engine in the future. The 15 kW/20 hp increase in top-level output also results from further advanced BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. It now includes a multi-stage turbocharger with variable turbine geometry for the high-pressure and low-pressure stages. The maximum torque of 700 Nm is generated alreadybetween 1 750 and 2 250 rpm. In the luxury sports car model range, the new drive technology enables the BMW 840d xDrive Coupé, for example, to improve its acceleration figure from a standing start to 100 km/h by 0.1 seconds to 4.8 seconds. The optimised performance characteristics of the diesel engine are accompanied by precisely adapted fine tuning of the chassis and its control systems.

The new diesel engines for the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 8 Series also represent the latest state of the art with regard to emissions. They feature exhaust gas treatment technology, whose engine-proximate components consist of a diesel oxidation catalytic converter and an SCR coating on the diesel particulate filter. In order to optimally reduce nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions, a second metering unit is additionally integrated at the outlet of the engine-proximate SCR system.

BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé: Additional engines and new optional extras.
New engines will be available from November 2020 for the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé. The new BMW 116i (combined fuel consumption: 5.8 – 5.4 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 133 – 124 g/km) is powered by a 3-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 80 kW/109 hp and a maximum torque of 190 Nm. It is equipped as standard with a manual 6-speed transmission and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 10.6 seconds. A 7-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch is optionally available. In addition, the model range will be expanded to include the new BMW 120i (fuel consumption combined: 5.8 – 5.5 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 134 – 126 g/km). Its 4-cylinder petrol engine generates a maximum output of 131 kW/178 hp and a maximum torque of 280 Nm and is combined as standard with a 7-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch. The new BMW 120i accelerates from a standing start to 100 km/h in 7.0 seconds.

Outstanding economy is the hallmark of the new entry-level diesel engine for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé. The 3-cylinder diesel engine of the new BMW 216d Gran Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 4.1 – 3.8 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 108 – 99 g/km) provides a maximum output of 85 kW/116 hp and a maximum torque of 270 Nm. It transmits its power to a 7-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch as standard and enables acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds.

The range of optional equipment for the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé is supplemented by the BMW Individual Shadow Line lights. With the black inserts at the upper edge of the headlamps they make the front view even more powerfully expressive.

Urban Cruise Control: Increased comfort and optimised safety when driving in urban traffic.
The increased level of comfort and safety achieved through combined speed and distance control will also be available in numerous current BMW models when driving in city traffic from autumn 2020 onwards. In conjunction with the optional Driving Assistant Professional, the Urban Cruise Control function is available in the BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo, the BMW 8 Series and the BMW X5, BMW X6, BMW X7, BMW M5, BMW M8, BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M model series. It extends the range of functions of the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function by a traffic light recognition function. In addition to vehicles and traffic signs ahead, traffic lights registered by the stereo camera are also taken into account.

In the case of traffic light signals that are clearly related to the lane you are travelling, these are automatically registered by the speed and distance control system. If the traffic light is red, the system decelerates the vehicle to a standstill. A green light signals the continuation of the journey. In a more complex intersection situation where, for example, different light signals apply to different lanes, a traffic light symbol is displayed in the instrument cluster. The driver can then confirm the light signal shown there and continue to use the automatic speed and distance control or control the speed himself. For additional comfort in city traffic there is a drive reminder function. While stationary at a traffic light, the current traffic light phase is displayed in the instrument cluster; at the beginning of the green phase, the driver also receives a signal to start driving.

The Urban Cruise Control function can also be integrated into the car at a later date by means of a Remote Software Upgrade. With the exception of the BMW 8 Series models, this option is available for vehicles of all the above-mentioned series produced from July 2020 onwards and which are equipped with the Driving Assistant Professional.

New digital services for more driving pleasure: BMW News, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with new functions, personal profile picture and simple log-in.
The latest generation of the display and control system makes it possible to use new digital services in numerous current BMW models. The BMW Operating System 7, which is available in conjunction with BMW Live Cockpit, BMW Live Cockpit Plus or BMW Live Cockpit Professional, allows the driver to customise what is displayed to a very high degree. From November 2020, audio content will also be tailored to the driver’s wishes and needs with BMW News. Based on the driver’s individual interests, current online news is selected from publisher offerings and broadcast in the form of naturally spoken language via the vehicle's audio system.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is one of the particularly innovative services that features in current models with BMW Operating System 7. The digital companion, which enables intuitive operation of numerous vehicle functions via voice control (“Hey, BMW”), is constantly gaining new capabilities. From autumn 2020, the operating modes MAX eDrive and AUTO eDrive or ELECTRIC and HYBRID can also be activated in the appropriately equipped plug-in hybrid models by means of a naturally spoken instruction.

Optimised options for creating a driver profile allow further customisation opportunities. From November 2020, the driver can no longer only login by entering the BMW ID manually, but also via the My BMW App as well, making the process very convenient. A QR code generated for this purpose can be displayed on the Control Display, which can be scanned using a smartphone. The personal driver profile data can then be transferred to the vehicle. Also new: The driver can add a photo of his choice to his individual profile.

BMW X1 and BMW X2: New headlamp variants and BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line with extended features.
Adaptive LED headlights will be available for the compact BMW X2 Sports Activity Coupé from November 2020. They optimise visibility when driving at night, among other things by means of a high beam matrix function. This feature is able to increase the range of vision while at the same time avoiding any dazzle effect on other road users. To achieve this, the high beam is divided into several LED segments that can be activated and deactivated independently of each other to adapt how the road is illuminated to the respective traffic situation.

In addition, the striking BMW Individual Shadow Line lights are available as a new option for the BMW X2 and the BMW X1. The sporty appearance of the BMW X2 can be further enhanced by the BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line with extended features. In addition to the high-gloss black side window surrounds, this option includes a black frame for the BMW kidney grille and tailpipe trims in chrome black.

New paint finishes allow for expressive individualisation.
New additions to the range of paint finishes for numerous models will be introduced in autumn 2020 allowing for even greater levels of individualisation. The new San Remo Green metallic paint finish will also be available for the new BMW 4 Series Coupé in future. For the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7, the colours Dravit Grey metallic and Sparkling Brown metallic have been added to the range. In addition, the BMW Individual special paintwork finishes Grigio Telesto metallic, Urban Green metallic, Frozen Black metallic, Petrol Mica metallic, Ruby Red metallic, Avus Blue metallic and British Racing Green metallic are also available for the large BMW X models. 

For the BMW i3 (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) and BMW i3s (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 14.6 – 14.0 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) new paint finishes will also be available from November 2020. The purely electrically driven models will be available with paint finishes in Cashmere Silver with accents in BMW i Blue and Galvanic Gold with accents in Frozen Grey metallic and Fluid Black with accents in Frozen Grey metallic.

With the introduction of 48-volt mild hybrid technology in additional model series from summer 2020, BMW continues to consistently reduce fuel consumption and emissions in its current vehicle fleet. From July and August 2020, both efficiency and dynamic performance will be optimised in 51 models with the use of a particularly powerful starter generator and an additional battery. This also applies to the new in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines in the BMW 7 Series and in the BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7. Two additional engine variants are available for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé from July 2020 onwards. In numerous plug-in hybrid models, the new BMW eDrive Zone function will ensure an automatic switch to purely electric operating mode when entering inner city areas such as low emission zones.

The extension of the range of standard and optional equipment features in the areas of driver assistance systems, operation and networking contributes to an increase in driving pleasure. A new display and control system will be part of the standard trim in the new BMW 3 Series from July 2020. Among other things, BMW Operating System 7 enables use of the optional BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Furthermore, in the BMW 3 Series and other model series the range of functions of the optional Driving Assistant Professional is supplemented by Active Navigation Guidance and the Emergency Lane Assistant.

Increased dynamic performance and reduced fuel consumption: 48-volt mild hybrid technology now in 51 BMW models.
From summer 2020 onwards, mild hybrid technology will be used in numerous additional BMW models to provide support and relief for the combustion engine. It consists of a 48-volt starter generator that enables particularly intensive braking energy recuperation along with an additional battery to store the electricity that is generated in this way. The 48-volt battery not only supplies the electrically operated vehicle functions, it also makes its energy available to generate additional drive power. For this purpose the current flows back to the starter generator, which now takes on the role of an electric drive. This reduces the load on the combustion engine, allowing it to run as often as possible in an efficiency-optimised load range. What is more, the generator creates an electric boost during acceleration. This instantly available additional output of 8 kW/11 hp supports dynamic power delivery during start and acceleration.

The 48-volt mild hybrid technology was first introduced in selected model variants of the BMW 5 Series in autumn 2019. This was followed by the BMW 3 Series models and several BMW X models. From July and August 2020, it will be available as standard in 37 further model variants of the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series and BMW 7 Series as well as the BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7. All in all it will ensure efficiency and dynamic performance in 51 current BMW models.

More power, less emissions: the new in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines with optimised BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology.
A new generation of in-line 6-cylinder engines will make its debut in numerous BMW model series in summer 2020. These highly efficient aluminium power units, each with a capacity of 3.0 litres, combine their extensively further developed BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology with the new 48-volt mild hybrid system, thereby achieving particularly significant progress within the context of BMW EfficientDynamics. In addition to optimised turbocharging systems, the latest version of common rail direct injection with piezo injectors ensures that both performance and efficiency are significantly increased in the new diesel engines. The injectors now transport fuel to the combustion chambers in up to ten injections per cycle and at a maximum pressure of 2,700 bar.

With maximum output increased by 15 kW/21 hp to 210 kW/286 hp, the new diesel engine for the models BMW 730d (combined fuel consumption: 4.9 – 4.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 128 – 123 g/km) and BMW 730d xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.2 – 5.0 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 138 – 133 g/km), BMW 730Ld (combined fuel consumption: 5.0 – 4.8 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 130 – 126 g/km), BMW 730Ld xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.3 – 5.1 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 139 – 133 g/km), BMW X3 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 5.6 – 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 147 – 137 g/km), BMW X4 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 5.6 – 5.1 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 146 – 136 g/km), BMW X5 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 – 5.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 164 – 150 g/km) und BMW X6 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 6.2 – 5.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 162 – 149 g/km) demonstrates a perceptibly enhanced temperament. Its particularly spontaneous power delivery is due to the multi-stage turbocharging used for the first time in this version of the in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine, along with variable turbine geometry for the low-pressure stage of the system. Increased by 30 to 650 Nm, the maximum torque of the new drive unit goes on stream at between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm – a power boost that especially results in enhanced sprint capacity. For example, the BMW 730d and the BMW 730d xDrive have improved their acceleration from zero to 100 km/h by 0.2 seconds each to 5.9 and 5.6 seconds respectively.

The new diesel engine now also used in the BMW 740d xDrive models BMW 740d xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.4 – 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 142 – 136 g/km), BMW 740Ld xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 5.4 – 5.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 143 – 137 g/km), BMW X3 M40d (combined fuel consumption: 6.0 – 5.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 157 – 148 g/km), BMW X4 M40d (combined fuel consumption: 5.9 – 5.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 156 – 147 g/km) und BMW X7 xDrive40d (combined fuel consumption: 6.6 – 6.4 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 173 – 167 g/km) generates even greater pulling power. Its multi-stage turbocharging system comprises a high-pressure and a low-pressure turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. As a result, a maximum torque of 700 Nm is delivered between 1,750 and 2,250 rpm. The engine reaches its peak output of 250 kW/340 hp at 4 400 rpm. In the BMW 740d xDrive, for example, this increased power helps achieve a sprint from standstill to 100 km/h that is also improved by 0.2 seconds to 5.0 seconds.

The two new engines are feature exhaust gas treatment technology with engine-related components consisting of a diesel oxidation catalytic converter and an SCR coating on the diesel particulate filter. For optimum reduction of nitrogen oxide (NO_X) emissions, a second dosage unit is additionally integrated at the outlet of the engine-related SCR system. As a result, the models powered by the new in-line 6-cylinder diesel engines meet the Euro 6d emissions standard.

Expansion of the model range for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé model range will be extended from July 2020 with the addition of two new engine variants. A new entry-level diesel engine and an additional all-wheel drive model variant are available for the sporty, elegant four-door model in the premium compact segment. The new BMW 218d Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 4.5 – 4.2 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 118 – 109 g/km) is powered by the latest version of a 4-cylinder diesel engine. The BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology in the 2.0-litre power unit now includes a two-stage turbocharging system as well as a likewise further developed common rail direct injection featuring solenoid valve injectors. The new engine delivers its maximum torque of 350 Nm between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm, reaching a maximum output of 110 kW/150 hp at 4,000 rpm. The new BMW 218d Gran Coupé accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual transmission and in 8.5 seconds with the optional 8-speed Steptronic transmission.

The second diesel engine available for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé delivers a maximum output of 140 kW/190 hp and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. In the new BMW 220d xDrive Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 4.9 – 4.5 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 129 – 119 g/km) it is now combined with intelligent all-wheel drive and an 8-speed Steptronic transmission. This enables the new model variant to accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. Thanks to state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment including SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue injection, both new models meet the Euro 6d emissions standard.

Green light for BMW eDrive Zone: locally emissions-free travel in the city on an automated basis.
Innovative technology from the fields of electrification and digitalisation is combined in the new BMW eDrive Zone function available in the premium car manufacturer’s plug-in hybrid models. This globally unique digital service offers additional options for making optimum use of the capabilities of emissions-free driving. The BMW eDrive Zone function triggers an automatic switch to purely electric operating mode as soon as the vehicle enters selected urban areas such as low-emission zones.

BMW eDrive Zone will be a standard feature of all plug-in hybrid models of the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series and BMW 7 Series as well as the BMW X5. The digital service uses geo-fencing technology via GPS to identify designated areas. eDrive zones of this kind are currently designated in some 80 cities throughout Europe. When the service is activated, each available eDrive Zone on the navigation map is graphically highlighted in the Control Display: a message appears to inform the driver that the vehicle will automatically switch to electric driving mode as soon as it enters an eDrive Zone.

From summer 2020, the above-mentioned plug-in hybrid models will also be fitted with an integrated drive-ready sound for electric power as standard. This means that both starting and stopping the electric drive will be accompanied by a distinctive acoustic signal. In addition there has been an expansion of the range of preconditioning functions, which is also a standard feature. Depending on the equipment fitted, more functions will be available that can be activated remotely by smartphone, in addition to interior cooling and heating. In future it will also be possible to activate the seat climate control before the start of a journey, for example. In the same way it will be possible to include the seat, steering wheel, exterior mirror and rear window heating systems in the preconditioning for heating the interior, as well as heating of the cameras for the driver assistance systems.

BMW 3 Series Sedan and BMW 3 Series Touring now fitted with BMW Operating System 7 as standard.
In the new BMW 3 Series, the latest generation of the display and control system will be a standard feature as of summer 2020. Previously only used in conjunction with BMW Live Cockpit Professional, BMW Operating System 7 offers extensive individualisation and personalisation of the content shown on the Control Display. The standard BMW Live Cockpit now also includes a redesigned instrument cluster with a 5.1-inch digital display at its centre. BMW Live Cockpit Plus, like BMW Live Cockpit Professional, also includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. This digital companion enables intuitive operation of numerous vehicle functions via voice control (“Hey, BMW”). In the BMW 1 Series and BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, BMW Operating System 7 will also be part of the optional BMW Live Cockpit Plus from July 2020.

The M sports seats are new to the range of optional extras for the new BMW 3 Series Sedan and the new BMW 3 Series Touring. They feature excellent lateral support, a wide range of adjustment options and headrests with embossed M logo. The M sports seats for driver and front passenger are available in conjunction with the Model M Sport equipment line as well as for the BMW M automobiles of the new BMW 3 Series. The choice of exterior colours for the new BMW 3 Series is supplemented by the variant Phytonic Blue metallic.

Increased comfort and safety: Driving Assistant Professional with additional functions.
The optional Driving Assistant Professional is a particularly comprehensive collection of driver assistance systems designed to optimise comfort and safety: it is being used by BMW to pave the way to automated driving in numerous current models. The focus is on the steering and lane guidance assistant, which will be enhanced with additional functions from summer 2020 in the BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series and BMW 8 Series, in the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7, and in all variants of the BMW M5 and BMW M8.

The new Active Navigation Guidance indicates lane changes that are necessary in order to continue driving along the selected route when destination guidance is active. The driver can then carry out this operation conveniently with the aid of the lane change assistant. In addition, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function will in future include an adaptive distance control that adapts to the respective traffic situation and environmental conditions.

Further progress is also being made in the intelligent control of the Speed Limit Info system with No Passing Indicator. In all model variants of the BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 6 Series, BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé, the BMW Z4, the BMW X5, the BMW X6 and the BMW X7 as well as the BMW M5, the BMW M8, the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M, road sign detection will in future additionally take into account speed limits that are restricted in time and only apply on certain days of the week. On days other, the speed limit derived from the navigation data is displayed.

BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series with optimised Integral Active Steering.
Sporty flair and ride comfort in the BMW 7 Series luxury sedans and the luxury sports cars of the BMW 8 Series benefit from Integral Active Steering. The optional suspension system combines a variable rack and pinion ratio on the front axle with selective co-steering of the rear wheels. Even at particularly low speeds of less than 3 km/h, the rear wheels are now countersteered. This gives the models of the BMW 7 Series and BMW 8 Series additional manoeuvrability when moving slowly in and out of parking spaces or passing through narrow gaps.

In addition, the BMW 7 Series will be available from July 2020 in the new exterior paint finish Phytonic Blue metallic and the BMW Individual paint finish Frozen Bluestone metallic. A fresh touch of luxury ambience is added to the interior with the BMW Individual leather steering wheel as well as the new version of the BMW Individual Merino full leather trim in the colour combination Smoke White/Night Blue/Black.

New body finishes for the BMW i3 and numerous other models
Another new addition to the range is the body finish in Cashmere Silver metallic, which is also available for the BMW X1. The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer will also offered in Phytonic Blue metallic and Misano Blue metallic in future.

New body finishes are available for numerous other models, too. Phytonic Blue metallic and Sunset Orange metallic versions of the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé will be on offer from July 2020. The body finish Phytonic Blue metallic will also be available for the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7 as of August 2020. What is more, the BMW X5 and BMW X6 can be fitted with the new Carbon Fibre interior trim finishers and M Carbon exterior mirror caps in conjunction with the M sports package.

The purely electrically powered models BMW i3 (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) and BMW i3s (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 14.6 – 14.0 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) will be available from summer 2020 in the new body finish Blue Ridge Mountain with accentuations in Frozen Grey metallic.

Meanwhile new BMW Individual body finishes are available for the model variants of the high-performance sports car BMW M8. For the BMW M8 Series Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 10.6 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 242 g/km*) and the BMW M8 Convertible (combined fuel consumption: 10.8 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 246 g/km), the Ametrin metallic variant is now newly available. For both models and for the BMW M8 Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 10.7 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 244 g/km), the versions Bluestone metallic, Frozen Brands Hatch Grey metallic and Frozen Motegi Red metallic are likewise available.

Munchen/Genève: BMW gaat in sneltempo verder met de elektrificatie van zijn gamma en presenteert de nieuwste plug-in hybride modellen op het komende Autosalon van Genève (7 tot en met 17 maart). Tegelijk presenteert BMW een nieuwe sports activity vehicle (SAV) met elektrische aandrijving: de BMW X3 wordt vanaf december 2019 ook als plug-in hybride geproduceerd. Daarmee is de BMW X3 de eerste SAV die BMW aanbiedt met zowel een conventionele verbrandingsmotor als met een plug-in hybride aandrijflijn – en in 2020 volgt ook nog een volledig elektrisch aangedreven versie.

In 2018 verstevigde BMW Group opnieuw zijn positie als pionier en marktleider op het gebied van auto’s met een vorm van elektrische aandrijving (bron: IHS Markit New Registrations 2018 Report 04.01. 2019). Met een marktaandeel wereldwijd van meer dan 9% is BMW Group de grootste van de premium aanbieders van auto’s met puur elektrische en plug-in hybride aandrijving. In 2018 was de BMW Group in Duitsland, China én België de marktleider in het premium segment van auto’s met elektrische aandrijving. Met een marktaandeel van meer dan 16% stond BMW Group opnieuw ook in Europa op de eerste plaats in de verkoopranglijst van auto’s met elektrische aandrijving. BMW Group noteerde in 2018 een wereldwijd verkooprecord met meer dan 140.000 puur elektrische en plug-in hybride auto’s. Dat is een toename van 38,4% ten opzichte van 2017.

Als één van de vier toekomstgerichte onderwerpen van ACES (Autonomous, Connected, Electrified and Services/Shared – ofwel autonoom, verbonden, geëlektrificeerd en diensten/delen), is elektrische mobiliteit een van de belangrijkste aspecten van BMW’s strategie NUMBER ONE > NEXT. BMW Group wil tegen eind dit jaar meer dan een half miljoen auto’s met elektrische aandrijving op de weg hebben.

En dan zijn er nog de plug-in hybride varianten van de BMW X5, de BMW X3, de BMW 2 Reeks, de BMW 3 Reeks, de BMW 5 Reeks, de BMW 7 Reeks en de BMW X1 xDrive25Le die in China wordt geproduceerd voor de lokale markt. De MINI Cooper SE Countryman ALL4 (gecombineerd brandstofverbruik: 2,4-2,5 l/100 km; gecombineerd energieverbruik 13,4-13,7 kWh/100 km; gecombineerde CO2-emissie: 55-56 g/km*) en de volledig elektrische MINI completeren het twaalftal geëlektrificeerde modellen. Niet alleen dat grote aantal is uniek, ook de variëteit is dat – van het premium compacte segment via het (hogere) middensegment tot in het segment van de luxe, sportieve auto’s én in de segmenten van de sportauto’s en de SAV’s. BMW Group verwacht dat in 2025 het aanbod van elektrische modellen van de merken in de groep is toegenomen tot minimaal 25.

Wereldpremière: de BMW X3 xDrive30e met plug-in hybride aandrijving.

BMW start in december 2019 met de productie van een SAV met plug-in hybride aandrijving en breidt daarmee zijn gamma van auto’s met elektrische aandrijving verder uit. De BMW X3 xDrive30e maakt zijn werelddebuut op de komende Autosalon van Genève. De auto combineert de veelzijdigheid van een premium middelgrote SAV met de vooruitstrevende BMW eDrive technologie. Zijn robuuste karakter, sportieve prestaties en BMW xDrive vierwielaandrijving – ook actief als alleen de elektromotor de auto aandrijft – zijn gecombineerd met een bijzonder laag brandstofverbruik en bijzonder lage emissie. Met de allernieuwste accutechnologie heeft de BMW X3 xDrive30e een puur elektrische actieradius van tot wel 50 kilometer*. Dankzij BMW eDrive technologie is het gecombineerde brandstofverbruik beperkt tot minder dan 2,4 l/100 km*, met een CO2-emissie van hooguit 56 g/km*.

Het plug-in hybride systeem in de BMW X3 xDrive30e bestaat uit een 4-cilinder benzinemotor met BMW TwinPower Turbo techniek en een elektromotor. Beide krachtbronnen drijven de wielen aan via een 8-traps Steptronic transmissie en de intelligente vierwielaandrijving. Het systeemvermogen bedraagt 185 kW (252 pk) en kan tijdelijk worden verhoogd met 30 kW (41 pk) door gebruikmaking van het piekvermogen van de elektromotor. De BMW X3 xDrive30e accelereert in slechts 6,5 seconden (onder voorbehoud) vanuit stilstand naar 100 km/u.

Het nieuwste plug-in hybride model van BMW is uitgerust met een lithium-ion-accu die ruimtebesparend onder de achterbank is gemonteerd. Met een bagageruimte van 450 liter doet de BMW X3 xDrive30e niet onder voor de modelvarianten met conventionele aandrijflijn.

Andere wereldpremières in Genève: BMW 330e Berline, BMW X5 xDrive45e en de plug-in hybride versies van de nieuwe BMW 7 Reeks.

De leidende rol van BMW Group op het gebied van elektrische aandrijving komt ook tot uitdrukking in het huidige motorengamma. Op de Autosalon van Genève van dit jaar presenteert BMW de tweede generatie van plug-in hybride modellen in drie segmenten.

De nieuwe BMW 330e Berline is bijzonder indrukwekkend, niet alleen vanwege de elektrische actieradius van 60 kilometer – ten opzichte van die van zijn voorganger een toename van maar liefst 50%. Maar ook vanwege de reductie van het brandstofverbruik tot maximaal 1,7 l/100 km* en van de CO2-emissie tot 39 g/km*. En dat alles gecombineerd met het kenmerkende rijplezier dat de sportberline biedt. Het systeemvermogen van de plug-in hybride aandrijflijn bedraagt 185 kW (252 pk) – met de mogelijkheid om dat met de standaard XtraBoost tijdelijk met nog eens 30 kW (41 pk) te verhogen. Daarmee accelereert de nieuwe BMW 330e Berline vanuit stilstand naar 100 km/u in 6,0 seconden (onder voorbehoud).

Ook de nieuwste versie van de BMW X5 met plug-in hybride aandrijving biedt meer vermogen, verbeterde efficiency en een grotere elektrische actieradius. De nieuwe BMW X5 xDrive45e is nu uitgerust met een aangepaste 6-cilinder-in-lijn benzinemotor en een elektromotor – met een systeemvermogen dat is toegenomen tot 290 kW (394 pk). Het kost deze SAV slechts 5,6 seconden (onder voorbehoud) om vanuit stilstand naar 100 km/u te accelereren. De elektrische actieradius bedraagt ongeveer 80 kilometer*, bijna drie keer zo veel als die van zijn voorganger. Daardoor zijn de dagelijkse ritten naar het werk en naar huis gemakkelijk puur elektrisch aangedreven af te leggen, zodat de lokale CO2-emissie wordt gereduceerd tot 0 g/km. Maar met zijn 69 liter brandstoftank is de BMW X5 xDrive45e ook perfect geschikt voor lange ritten. De vooruitstrevende plug-in hybride aandrijftechnologie reduceert het gecombineerde brandstofverbruik tot maximaal 2,1 l/100 km* en de CO2-emissie uit brandstof tot maximaal 49 g/km*. De kwaliteiten als reisauto blijken ook uit de veelzijdige bagageruimte. De inhoud van 500 tot 1.716 liter is slechts weinig minder dan die van de modelvarianten met conventionele aandrijving.

De grensverleggende, veelzijdige kwaliteiten van de BMW X5 xDrive45e worden perfect aangevuld door de intelligente vierwielaandrijving BMWxDrive. Die brengt de power van beide krachtbronnen over naar alle vier wielen en zorgt voor sportief rijplezier op de weg en uitmuntende tractie en prestaties op onverhard terrein.

In de plug-in hybride varianten van de nieuwe BMW 7 Reeks zijn de sportieve flair, het reiscomfort en de aangename ambiance van een luxueuze berline gecombineerd met de mogelijkheid om lokaal emissievrij en vrijwel geluidloos te rijden. De elektrische actieradius is met ongeveer 30% uitgebreid ten opzichte van de actieradius van de voorgangers en bedraagt nu 50 tot 58 kilometer*. Het gamma omvat de BMW 745e (gecombineerd brandstofverbruik: 2,1-2,3 l/100 km; gecombineerd energieverbruik 15,1-15,6 kWh/100 km; gecombineerde CO2-emissie: 48-52 g/km*), de langere BMW 745Le (gecombineerd brandstofverbruik: 2,2-2,3 l/100 km; gecombineerd energieverbruik: 15,6-15,7 kWh/100 km; gecombineerde CO2-emissie: 50-53 g/km) en de BMW 745Le xDrive (gecombineerd brandstofverbruik: 2,3-2,6 l/100 km; gecombineerd energieverbruik: 15,8-16,3 kWh/100 km; gecombineerde CO2-emissie: 52-59 g/km*) met verlengde wielbasis en vierwielaandrijving. De aandrijflijn bestaat nu uit een speciaal voor deze versie aangepaste 6-cilinder-in-lijn benzinemotor in combinatie met een elektromotor. Als de bestuurder met de Driving Experience Control de SPORT-modus kiest, kan hij beschikken over een systeemvermogen van 290 kW (394 pk). De nieuwe BMW 745e accelereert in 5,2 seconden vanuit stilstand naar 100 km/u, de nieuwe BMW 745Le doet dat in 5,3 seconden en de nieuwe BMW 745Le xDrive in slechts 5,1 seconden.

BMW 530e Berline en BMW 225xe Active Tourer met doorontwikkelde lithium-ion-accu’s en een grotere elektrische actieradius.

Nieuwe ontwikkelingen op het gebied van batterijceltechnologie leidden ook tot een uitbreiding van de mogelijkheden om lokaal emissievrij te rijden in de plug-in hybride varianten van de BMW 5 Reeks en BMW 2 Reeks. Hoewel de afmetingen niet zijn veranderd, is de brutocapaciteit van de nieuwe lithium-ion-accu voor de plug-in hybride versie van de BMW 5 Reeks Berline nu toegenomen van 9,2 tot 12,0 kWh. Dat betekent dat de puur elektrische actieradius met meer dan 30% is gegroeid tot 64 kilometer*. De BMW 530e Berline heeft nu een gecombineerd brandstofverbruik van 1,7 l/100 km* en een CO2-emissie van 38 g/km*. Als extra modelvariant verschijnt vanaf juli 2019 de vierwielaangedreven BMW 530e xDrive Berline. Die heeft een puur elektrische actieradius van maximaal 57 kilometer*. Het gecombineerde brandstofverbruik bedraagt 1,9 l/100 km* met een CO2-emissie van 44 g/km*.

In de BMW 225xe Active Tourer plaveit state-of-the-art batterijceltechnologie de weg voor nog lagere verbruikscijfers en een toename van 25% van de puur elektrische actieradius tot 47 kilometer*. Ook hier zijn de afmetingen gelijk gebleven, maar is de brutocapaciteit van de lithium-ion-accu toegenomen van 7,7 tot 9,7 kWh. Het gecombineerde brandstofverbruik van de BMW 225xe Active Tourer is 1,9 l/100 km*, het gecombineerde energieverbruik 14,7 kWh/100 km en de CO2-emissie 43 g/km*. De speciaal voor de hybrideversie ontwikkelde vierwielaandrijving draagt bij aan de sportieve en veelzijdige rijeigenschappen van de BMW 225xe ActiveTourer. De standaarduitrusting en de opties omvatten talloze moderne rijdersassistentiesystemen en de nieuwste innovaties op het gebied van intelligente connectiviteit en digitale diensten – voor extra gemak bij het opladen van de hoogvoltage-accu en een nog intensere beleving van elektrisch rijden.

De modernste accutechnologie, nieuw bedieningssysteem en innovatieve digitale diensten voor een optimale elektrische rijervaring.

Behalve de nieuwste accutechnologie zijn de plug-in hybride varianten van de nieuwe BMW 3 Reeks Berline, BMW X5 en BMW 7 Reeks ook voorzien van een nieuw display- en bedieningssysteem en innovatieve digitale diensten voor een nog intensere beleving van elektrisch rijden. De standaarduitrusting omvat de BMW Live Cockpit Professional met nieuw vormgegeven schermen in het instrumentenpaneel en de Control Display, die heldere informatie geeft over de laadtoestand van de accu, de resterende elektrische actieradius en de ingestelde modus van de plug-in hybride aandrijving. De knoppen voor het selecteren van de rijmodus zijn nu geïntegreerd in de Driving Experience Control. Daarmee is met een simpele druk op de knop de SPORT-modus in te schakelen voor extra dynamische instellingen en de ADAPTIVE-modus voor instellingen die zijn aangepast aan de rijstijl van de bestuurder en de situatie. Ook zijn er nog drie aandrijfmodi te kiezen – HYBRID, ELECTRIC en BATTERY CONTROL. De HYBRID-modus is de standaardinstelling die zorgt voor balans en optimale samenwerking van de verbrandingsmotor en de elektromotor. Het is ook mogelijk om via het iDrive menu de ELECTRIC-modus te kiezen als standaardmodus. De HYBRID-knop moet twee keer worden ingedrukt om de extra efficiënte HYBRID ECO PRO-modus te activeren. De coasting-functie draagt eveneens bij aan een nog verdere reductie van het brandstofverbruik.

Het intelligente energiemanagementsysteem is ook geoptimaliseerd. Door de koppeling aan het navigatiesysteem is de samenwerking van de verbrandings- en de elektromotor nog preciezer aangepast aan de route en de situatie op de weg. In de BMW 330e Berline en de BMW X5 xDrive45e maakt het energiemanagementsysteem gebruik van gegevens van de navigatie en van sensors om optimaal remenergie terug te winnen in de HYBRID ECO PRO-modus. Als de auto een kruising of een voorligger nadert, kan de terugwinning van de remenergie worden geïntensiveerd om de auto af te remmen.

Tijdens het laadproces geeft het volledig digitale instrumentenpaneel grafisch informatie weer over de actuele laadstatus van de accu en dus de resterende elektrische actieradius. De grafische weergave – voor elke auto specifiek ontworpen – toont ook het beschikbare ampèrage bij het laadstation dat gebruikt wordt, en geeft aan wanneer de accu volledig is opgeladen.

Nieuwe digitale diensten maken het aantrekkelijker en gemakkelijker om de hoogvoltage-accu onderweg op te laden. Het navigatiesysteem toont bijvoorbeeld de hotels, restaurants, cafés, bezienswaardigheden en culturele attracties in de nabijheid van het geselecteerde openbare oplaadpunt. Klanten ontvangen ook een verwachting van de beschikbaarheid/bezetting van het laadstation. Verder biedt BMW gebruikers van ChargeNow de mogelijkheid om een laadpunt voor een beperkte tijd de reserveren vanuit de auto (onder voorbehoud van lancering in Belux).

BMW heeft een kenmerkend geluid ontwikkeld voor de modellen met elektrische aandrijving, waarmee voetgangers worden gewaarschuwd voor de aanwezigheid van de verder geluidloze auto. Het geluid is via een speakersysteem hoorbaar als de auto langzaam en elektrisch rijdt. Overigens heeft het geluid geen nadelige invloed op het geluidscomfort van de inzittenden van de BMW.

Alle verbruiks-, emissie-, prestatie- en actieradiuscijfers onder voorbehoud.

Gegevens over brandstofverbruik, CO2-uitstoot, elektriciteitsverbruik en bereik zijn vastgesteld in overeenstemming met de voorgeschreven meetprocedure Verordening (EU) 2007/715. De cijfers hebben betrekking op een voertuig met basisuitrusting in Duitsland, de uiteenlopende waarden houden rekening met verschillen in de geselecteerde wiel- en bandenmaat en optionele uitrusting.

De met een * gemarkeerde gegevens zijn berekend op basis van de nieuwe WLTP-testcyclus en voor vergelijkingsdoeleinden omgerekend naar NEDC. Voor deze auto’s kunnen andere getallen dan hier vermeld van toepassing zijn voor de berekening van belastingen en andere autogerelateerde toeslagen die (ook) zijn gebaseerd op de CO2-emissie.

Munich. Consistent further development of BMW eDrive technology once again ensures enhanced driving pleasure in the purely electrically powered models of the BMW i brand. With cell capacity increased to 120 ampere hours (Ah) and a gross energy content of 42.2 kilowatt hours (kWh), a new generation of high-voltage batteries enables the BMW i3 (120 Ah) (combined power consumption: 13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km)* and the BMW i3s (120 Ah) (combined power consumption: 14.6 – 14.0 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km)* to achieve a significantly further enhanced range as of November 2018. In everyday use, the two models are now able to cover a distance of 260 kilometres*** – an increase of almost 30 per cent.

In this way, BMW i is consolidating its position as an innovation leader and trendsetter in the field of pioneering electromobility with hallmark brand driving pleasure and excellent everyday practicality. Since the market launch of the BMW i3, the storage capacity of its high-voltage battery has been doubled, thereby increasing the car's range as well. At the same time as the introduction of the new battery, a new body finish, a new colour for the optional interior design Loft and adaptive LED headlights with matrix function for the high beam are also available for the BMW i3 and BMW i3s. In future, a sports package will be available for the BMW i3 that includes black wheel arch surrounds and a sports suspension with specific dampers, springs and stabilisers, lowered suspension, a widened track and 20-inch light alloy wheels. The optimised guidance system in the tile design of the iDrive operating system is now available in conjunction with the optional navigation system Business. In future, the options telephony with wireless charging and wireless LAN hotspot will also be available for the BMW i3 and BMW i3s.

Ongoing progress in battery development: increased energy content while dimensions remain the same.

Like the electric motors and power electronics, the high-voltage batteries are an integral part of the BMW eDrive technology used in BMW i automobiles and developed independently by the BMW Group. Its lithium-ion cells are produced exclusively based on specifications defined by the BMW Group. Based on sound research and development work conducted in close cooperation with the manufacturer of the battery cells, consistent optimisation of the storage units is achieved in terms of power output, range, safety and durability. Installed deep in the floor of the vehicle, the high-voltage battery is produced at the BMW plant in Dingolfing and consists of eight modules, each with twelve storage cells: the latest advancements have resulted in a capacity of 120 Ah along with a gross energy content of 42.2 kWh – while the size remains unchanged. This is yet another major step towards increased range. For comparison: at the market launch of the BMW i3 in 2013, the equivalent figures were 60 Ah and 22.6 kWh, while the second-generation battery introduced in 2016 reaches a level of 94 Ah and 33 kWh.

In addition to vehicle weight and the installation space taken up by the high-voltage battery, driving performance and energy consumption likewise remain virtually unaltered by the increased range achieved by the latest advancements. The BMW i3, powered by a 125 kW/170 hp electric motor, accelerates in 7.3 seconds from zero to 100 km/h, while the BMW i3s with 135 kW/184 hp completes the standard sprint in 6.9 seconds. This means that the two models both set the benchmark for sporty performance within their vehicle segment. Thanks to spontaneous power delivery as is typical of electric motors, the BMW i3 and BMW i3s even reach the level of sports cars that have a considerably more powerful combustion engine: here the figures are 5.1 and 4.3 seconds respectively for the sprint from 80 to 120 km/h.

The combined power consumption of the BMW i3 (120 Ah) is 13.1 kWh per 100 kilometres*, while the BMW i3s (120 Ah) has a power consumption of 14.6 kWh to 14.0 kWh per 100 kilometres*. The high efficiency of the electric motor and the enhanced battery capacity result in a range that is nearly 30 per cent higher than that of the predecessor models. The range of the BMW i3 (120 Ah) is 359 kilometres* (previously 290 to 300 km) according to NEDC, and 285 to 310 kilometres** (previously 235 – 255 km) according to WLTP. For the BMW i3s (120 Ah), a range of 330 to 345 kilometres* (previously 280 km) has been calculated according to NEDC, and a range of 270 to 285 kilometres** (previously 235 –245 km) according to WLTP. In everyday conditions, both models now achieve a range of 260 kilometres*** (previously 200 km).

The high-quality charging electronics of the BMW i3 and BMW i3s allows fast and flexible refreshment of the energy reserves. The standard charging cable is designed to be plugged into a conventional household socket. Here the battery can be charged to up to 80 per cent of its full power in approximately 15 hours with a charging capacity of 2.4 kW. Connection to the BMW i Wallbox enables rapid three-phase charging with a capacity of 11 kW. Here the time required to achieve an 80 per cent charge of the large-capacity high-voltage battery is 3.2 hours. The power electronics and high-voltage battery in the BMW i3 and BMW i3s can also be used in conjunction with quick-charging stations that run on DC power. Here the charging capacity is 50 kW and the high-voltage battery reaches 80 per cent of its total power in just 42 minutes.

With its battery capacity increased to 42.2 kWh, the latest version of the BMW i3 also follows the brand's holistic concept, applicable since market launch and geared towards responsible use of resources: this includes not just locally emissions-free power but also material selection and production techniques as well as mobility services. The BMW i3 (120 Ah) and the BMW i3s (120 Ah) have a much more favourable CO₂ footprint across the entire vehicle lifecycle – from raw material extraction and manufacture through to use and recycling – and this makes for significantly lower global warming potential than is the case with comparable, conventionally powered automobiles.

Sports package as a new option for the BMW i3.

In future, the new sports package will enable additional emphasis of brand-based driving pleasure derived from locally emissions-free mobility in the BMW i3. The key element of the new option is the sports suspension, which is a standard feature in the BMW i3s and includes specific dampers, springs and stabilisers, a suspension lowered by 10 millimetres, a widened track and 20-inch light alloy wheels in Jet Black or Bicolor finish with mixed tyres. This increase in driving dynamics is visually underscored by means of black wheel arch surrounds, which also form part of the BMW i sports package.

New body finishes, adaptive LED headlights, optimised controls and connectivity.

Since 2014 the BMW i3 has been the world's best-selling electrically powered vehicle in the premium compact segment. On the streets of urban conurbations it has come to stand as a symbol of pioneering mobility. Its characteristic shaping is closely linked to the LifeDrive vehicle architecture, which combines an aluminium chassis with a passenger cell made carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). With the introduction of the new battery generation, the design of the BMW i3 and the BMW i3s has been enriched with fresh accentuations. The choice of body finish for the two models has been extended to include the new variant Jucaro Beige metallic with accentuations in Frozen Grey. Meanwhile the exterior paint finishes Mineral Grey metallic, Imperial Blue metallic, Melbourne Red metallic, Capparis White and Fluid Black are still available. To match the new body finish, the optional interior design Loft now includes upholstery in the fabric/Sensatec combination "Electronic" – in Carum Grey with accentuations in brown and interior surfaces in Electronic Brown.

As an alternative to the standard LED headlights, adaptive LED headlights are now available with an automatic, selective dip function for the high beam. The innovative matrix technology for the high beam increases visibility range while at the same avoiding any dazzle effect on other road users. For this purpose it is divided into four horizontally arranged segments which can be activated and deactivated independently of each other at speeds of over 70 km/h. The high beam segments are controlled based on the traffic situation. As soon as the front camera registers an oncoming vehicle or a vehicle travelling ahead in the same direction, the space in which this vehicle is located is illuminated using the low beam only. This is effected by deactivation of the matrix high beam segments that are responsible for this area. The remaining areas of the road continue to be illuminated by the high beam. Adaptive LED headlight functions also include the cornering light and the high beam assistant.

The optimised menu display for the iDrive operating system with buttons in tile structure and in live mode is now also available in conjunction with the optional navigation system Business. This means that the desired content is now available even more quickly and conveniently. What is more, the program of optional equipment items now also includes the option of telephony with wireless charging, which allows compatible mobile phones to be recharged without use of a cable. The wireless LAN hotspot, likewise newly available for the BMW i3 and the BMW i3s, provides a fast online connection for up to ten end devices inside the vehicle.

San Francisco/ Munich. At theGovernor’s Global Climate Action Summit (12–14September 2018) in San Francisco, the BMW Groupand PG&E present the results of their ChargeForward project in favour of maximizing the use of electricity from renewable resources to charge electric cars.

The main findings are:

•  Electric vehicles can help stabilizing the public grid and maximizing the portion of renewables.
•  Drivers are willing to change their charging habits in order to align with renewables, given the right messaging and incentives.
•  Energy companies can help increase daytime charging with renewables by supporting companies in adding workplace charging.
•  Sharing data with other drivers is a motivator for many participants.
•  Programmes like ChargeForward improve customers’ understanding of how the grid works, which helps them become more educated energy consumers.
  
  

The bottom line is that owners of all electrified cars could be able to make their high-voltage batteries available as a flexibility buffer for power generated from renewable sources. At the same time, they could receive bonuses by charging their vehicle at the best possible time of day – and therefore maximising the proportion of solar energy they use – whether they are at home or out and about and using a public charging facility.

ChargeForward brings CO2-neutral electric mobilityand efficient, environment-friendly electricitysupplyanother step closer together. The innovation project launched byBMW iand power supplier Pacific Gas&Electric (PG&E) in theSan Francisco Bay AreainCalifornia has been running since 2015. Currently,350 owners of electrified vehicles from the BMW and MINI brands who also have aPG&E supply contract are taking part in the pioneering fleet trial.

TheChargeForward pilot projectin Californiais stepping up the ways in which electric mobilitycan link with eco-friendly changes inenergy use. The project is bridging the gap between electric vehicles and the public gridwith at echnology that hasthe potential to make electric driving emission-free not only locally but across the board. Key elements here include daily forecasts from energy providers on when and how much electricity from renewable sources will be available on thegrid. Customer requirements and preferences regarding vehicle usage periods and parking times are also taken into account. The ConnectedDrive telematics unit fitted in all BMW vehicles and the BMW Connected app play a crucial role here.

When the ChargeForward project was launched in 2015, around 100 BMWi3 drivers downloaded a ChargeForward app which allowed flexible vehicle charging from the electricity grid. This meant the charging process could be paused when the grid enjoyed particularly high demand and then restarted when the peak had tailed off again. Drivers would be informed of any charging pauses by a message to their smartphone. As a customer only rarely needs to use the whole time their vehicle is parked for charging, in many cases they would be able to benefit from periods when electric isavailable at lower cost. This would also present an easy way for the energy company to avoid grid overloads and ensure consistent and therefore efficient supply.

Since2017, the results of the second phase of the project have shown how a flexible charging strategycan contribute not only to stabilising the energy grid but also increasing the proportion of green energy sourced forel ectric mobility. Around EarthDay earlier this year, carefully managed charging in sunny California enabled greater use of electricity generated from renewable sources. Around 350 BMW i car drivers participating in the ChargeForward project were prompted to charge their vehicles’ high-voltage batteries during the day. In this way, they prioritised those periods when solar energy was available in particularly large quantities. This meant approximately 56 per cent of the power they fed into their vehicles during the test period could ultimately be sourced renewably – and more than half of the project participants’mileage in their BMW i3carsduring the test was therefore completely CO2-neutral. By comparison, the average percentage of renewable energy for the US stood at just 22 per cent.

The Governor’s Global ClimateAction Summit in San Francisco brings together international representatives from politics and government, environmental associations, business and industry to discuss the impact of climate change and possible measures to counteract it. The event shines the spotlight on ways to reduce CO2emissions generated by humans. TheBMW Group is contributing to the summit in various ways –e.g. witha run-downof the conclusions from the phases of the ChargeForward project completed so far and a presentation of further initiatives aimed at integrating electric mobility into a sustainable and largely CO2-neutral energy supply system.

By pressing ahead with the ChargeForward project, BMW iand PG&E are showing their commitment to further incentivising intelligent charging and to incorporating electric vehicles into the public energy grid even more efficiently.In the near future, high-voltage batteries from electrified BMW and MINI cars should be able to not only take on as much renewably sourced electricity as possible, but also feed it back into the grid, when there is a shortage of electricity from renewable resources. By acting as temporary energy storage facilities, they can help to stabilise energy supply. “Ecologie is zeer belangrijk in onze gemeentes. Doordat we deze elektrische wagens nu veel in het straatbeeld zullen zien rijden hopen we dat ook andere mensen gaan nadenken om de overstap naar een elektrische of hybride wagen te maken”, aldus Bart Somers. “We willen inderdaad verder inzetten op ecologie in onze gemeentes, en nu kunnen we deze visie ook in het straatbeeld brengen. Daarnaast kunnen we zo ook de werkomstandigheden in de wijk verbeteren, veiligheid blijft zowel voor Willebroek als Mechelen de prioriteit”, vult Eddy Bevers aan.

Emissievrij op interventie

De 100% elektrische BMW i3 kan zonder problemen 200 km afleggen met een volgeladen batterij, wat meer dan voldoende is voor interventies in de stad. Zijn bijzonder korte draaicirkel en de combinatie met zijn lichtheid maakt het mogelijk om zich makkelijk te verplaatsen tijdens interventies in de stad.

“We zien dat naast gewone consumenten ook steeds meer bedrijfsvloten BMW i3’s gebruiken voor hun verplaatsingen. Als u weet dat de gemiddelde auto in Europa maximaal 40 km aflegt per dag, dan is een rijbereik van 200 km méér dan voldoende. Niet alleen is de BMW i3 zelf volledig emissievrij, ook de fabriek in Leipzig (Duitsland) waar de wagen wordt geproduceerd, wordt uitsluitend aangedreven door elektriciteit uit windturbines. Zo blijft de hele keten zo neutraal mogelijk voor het milieu”, legt Thomas Heyens, BMW i manager bij BMW Belux, uit.

De politievoertuigen voor de zones Willebroek en Mechelen werden omgebouwd tot volwaardige politievoertuigen en werden afgeleverd via BMW Concessie Juma in Mechelen.  

Het Gentse bedrijf Planet Group kiest op 29 maart resoluut voor de mobiliteit van de toekomst. Zij nemen België’s grootste vloot elektrische bedrijfswagens in dienst. Dit kadert in hun pragmatische aanpak van duurzaamheid. De wagens zullen onder meer gebruikt worden door verpleegkundigen bij X-Care en helpdeskmedewerkers en programmeurs bij IT-Planet. BMW concessie Peter Daeninck, KBC Autolease en BMW i Belux zetten samen met Planet Group hun schouders onder dit ambitieus project.

Planet Group kiest met zijn bedrijven HR-Planet, IT-Planet en X-Care voluit voor de duurzame investering. CEO Sam Baro licht hun engagement toe: “Wij vinden het belangrijk om pionier te zijn, zowel in onze HR, IT en zorgactiviteiten áls in een duurzame mobiliteit. Ik wil tonen aan andere bedrijven dat het wel kan, nú al, om met volledig elektrische wagens te rijden. De BMW i3 past perfect bij onze visie.”

De BMW i3 haalt vandaag een range van 300 km volgens de NEDC-cyclus en minstens 200 km in reële rij-omstandigheden. Dankzij het innovatieve, lichtgewicht koetswerk uit carbon (CFRP) biedt de wagen veel binnenruimte. Ook de overige gebruikte materialen dragen bij aan de duurzaamheid van deze 100% elektrische premiumwagen. Zo is een deel van het dashboard en de deurpanelen van Kenaf. Dit plantaardig materiaal wordt in Bangladesh op duurzame wijze geteeld.

Sam Baro vult aan: “We verwachten dat onze medewerkers bewuster zullen omgaan met hun wagen. Anders gaan tanken, daar komt het op neer. Ondertussen engageren wij onszelf ook als bedrijf naar ons team toe: we installeren massaal laadpalen op kantoor, we zijn aan het onderhandelen met onze belangrijkste, vaste klanten om - op onze kosten uiteraard – snellere laadpunten bij hen te mogen plaatsen én we bekijken de mogelijkheid om bij de medewerkers thuis snellere laadpunten te installeren.”

De 50 wagens worden gradueel in dienst gezet. Nu gaat het om minstens 25 elektrische BMW i3’s, de resterende wagens zullen bij het einde van de overige, lopende leasingcontracten in dienst genomen worden. Tegen eind 2018 moet alles afgerond zijn. Dan zal zowat één derde van het park van Planet Group 100% elektrisch zijn.

Planet Group wil verder blijven investeren in milieuvriendelijk rijden. “Aangezien de levensduur van de batterijen alleen maar verder zal evolueren o.w.v. technologische ontwikkelingen, hebben we als doel op om een termijn van twee tot drie jaar het wagenpark 80% elektrisch te maken en op middellange termijn zelfs volledig elektrisch” stelt CEO van Planet Group Sam Baro.

Munich. The BMW i3 sets standards worldwide for driving pleasure in a purely electrically-driven vehicle. Key factors here are not only the increased output of the motor in the new BMW i3s, but also the innovative traction control system adapted specifically to the instantaneous power deliver of the BMW eDrive system. Presented for the first time in the new BMW i3s (270 Nm at 0 rpm, 135 kW / 184 HP, power consumption combined in European NEFZ test-cycle*: 14.3 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 0 g/km), the system improves traction and driving stability in adverse weather and road conditions when pulling away, in active Brake Energy Regeneration phases and when accelerating out of tight corners. At the heart of this innovation is the control system’s 50-times-faster routine, made possible because – unlike conventional driving stability systems – the control process is now calculated directly in the powertrain instead of in a remote unit requiring long signal paths. This development provides further evidence of BMW i as a pioneer of innovative technology within the BMW Group.

“With their high levels of torque and instantaneous responses to every movement of the accelerator, electric motors already make significantly higher demands on driving stability systems than conventional power units,” explains Peter Langen, Head of Chassis Development at BMW.

That’s why the BMW engineers developed a new type of system geared squarely to the demands of electric mobility.
The positive impact of these shorter control cycles is not reserved for purely electrically driven cars; indeed, this innovative traction control system also optimises traction, driving stability and driving dynamics in vehicles with combustion engines. It will therefore be fitted in BMW and MINI models with front-, rear- and all-wheel drive to deliver noticeably greater assurance and driving pleasure when road conditions make pulling away difficult.

Leipzig. The BMW Group continues to build on its leading international role in the field of electro-mobility, as the 100,000th BMW i3 rolled off the production line at the company’s Leipzig plant today. The BMW i3 has played a major part in making the BMW Group one of the most successful suppliers of electrified vehicles worldwide. Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, and Plant Director Hans-Peter Kemser celebrated this milestone with Saxony’s Minister-President Stanislaw Tillich, other guests and plant employees. At the event, Krüger and Kemser also presented the next member of the BMW i family, the BMW i8 Roadster, as a camouflaged prototype; series production of the BMW i8 Roadster will begin in 2018. A further highlight was today’s official commissioning of the BMW Battery Storage Farm Leipzig, which will connect up to 700 BMW i3 high-capacity batteries. The large-scale battery storage system at the Leipzig plant will give batteries previously installed in BMW i3 cars a second life and put them to profitable use in a sustainable, energy-based business model.

“We are proud of the 100,000th BMW i3 built by our plant in Leipzig. The BMW i3 is the original, a true technological pioneer. With BMW i as our spearhead, we intend to remain the leading premium supplier of electro-mobility going forward. We are now looking ahead to the next member of the BMW i family, the i8 Roadster, which will expand our leading position in the field of electro-mobility. In 2025, we will offer our customers a total of 25 models with electrified drive trains,” said Krüger. “In the interests of sustainability, today we are also presenting a concept for the second use of BMW i3 high-voltage batteries. With our Strategy NUMBER ONE > NEXT, we are looking far beyond the car itself and driving change in our industry with totally new approaches and business models.”

Saxony’s Minister-President Stanislaw Tillich continued to be impressed with the development of BMW’s Leipzig plant: “Two days after I was elected minister-president for the first time, I came to Leipzig to attend the topping out ceremony for the new BMW press shop. I have followed developments very closely ever since and had conversations with the Board of Management of BMW on a regular basis. The plant began building electric cars in 2013 and, by the end of my term of office, the Leipzig plant will have produced over 100,000 electric cars – now, with its battery farm, BMW is beginning a new chapter in its innovative history. I would like to thank the BMW Group for choosing to make Leipzig the leading production location for premium electric vehicles in Germany. I hope that the BMW Group, with its concentrated innovative power and Leipzig production expertise, will continue to spearhead the automotive revolution of the 21st century. 100,000th BMW i3 from Leipzig

Series production of the BMW i3 began in September 2013. The BMW Group has invested a total of 400 million euros in production of BMW i models at the Leipzig location and created more than 800 jobs. Current daily production of the BMW i3 stands at more than 120 units, with an annual production volume in 2016 of 26,631 vehicles. “We are proud of our team performance, which enables us to celebrate production of the 100,000th BMW i3 today – all with the same premium quality and efficiency as our more conventional models. I would like to thank all our associates for this tremendous achievement,” said Plant Director, Hans-Peter Kemser. Production in Leipzig includes making carbon-fibre parts and painted plastic parts for outer skin panels, the BMW i body shop and BMW i assembly hall.

Series production of the BMW i8 got underway in May 2014 and a total of 2,783 BMW i8s were shipped from the plant in 2016. Production of the most successful hybrid sports car worldwide currently stands at eight to ten vehicles per day.

The next member of the BMW i family, the BMW i8 Roadster, an open-topped version of the sports car, will be released onto the market in 2018.

“Battery2ndLife”: Innovative second use of BMW i3 high-voltage batteries for new business model: BMW Group opens large-scale battery storage in Leipzig

The official commissioning of the battery storage farm on the grounds of BMW Plant Leipzig demonstrates innovative, sustainable and profitable second use of BMW i3 batteries after a vehicle reaches the end of its lifecycle. The battery storage unit in Leipzig can house up to 700 used BMW i3 high-capacity batteries. There are currently 500 new and used batteries integrated, because today – four years after the BMW i3 market launch – most battery packs are still in cars on the road. “The capacity of 700 high-voltage batteries is the equivalent of an electric range of 100,000 km in a BMW i3. The scalable approach means that the storage unit could be further expanded to accommodate more batteries. It is also already compatible with upcoming battery generations and therefore future-proof,” underlined Joachim Kolling, Head of Energy Services at the BMW Group. “We are demonstrating once again that the concept of sustainability at BMW i goes far beyond the car.” With wind turbines located on the grounds of the plant, the BMW Battery Storage Farm Leipzig links decentralised captive production from renewable energies with local energy storage and an industrial consumer in a completely unique way. The stationary battery storage farm is also integrated with the public power grid, which enables its electricity to be marketed as primary balancing power. In this way, the BMW Group is making a contri-bution to the stability of the public power grid and performing a valuable function for the wider community. When there is a surplus of power from renewable energies, large-scale battery storage can relieve the grid by absorbing electricity. When there is not enough power in the electricity grid, the facility can release electricity to help stabilise the grid.

The battery storage farm at BMW Group Plant Leipzig will open up new potential for cost and energy efficiency, as well as CO2 reduction in the energy sector. It is yet another example of practical steps the BMW Group is taking in its aspiration to become the most sustainable automotive company in the world.

The BMW Battery Storage Farm project in Leipzig is part of the WindNODE initiative, dedicated to promoting intelligent usage and storage systems for renewable energies. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy provides funding for the venture through its "Smart Energy Showcases – Digital Agenda for the Energy Transition" (SINTEG) programme.

BMW Group Plant Leipzig

BMW Group Plant Leipzig is one of the most modern and sustainable car plants in the world. Series production began in March 2005. Today, more than 860 vehicles roll off the assembly line every day from classic production: Currently, these are the BMW 1 Series five-door version, the BMW 2 Series Coupé and Convertible, the BMW 2 Series M Coupé and the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. In addition, the plant also builds more than 120 BMW i3s and BMW i8s per day – two ground-breaking vehicles with alternative drive trains and innovative lightweight bodies.

Total investment in Leipzig to date exceeds two billion euros. The plant currently employs a permanent staff of more than 5,300 associates.  

About WindNode

A total of 70 partners from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Berlin, Saxony and Thuringia work together on the WindNODE project to connect energy producers, electricity grid operators, suppliers and consumers through an ICT platform. The goal is to organise supply and demand in such a way that large quantities of renewable energy can be introduced to the grid without causing major voltage fluctuations. A further aim is to develop innovative business models for suppliers, as well as consumer protection and data security standards, market designs and systems architecture. The driving experience in the BMW i models has played no small part in the growing appeal and popularity of electric mobility. Following systematic refinement, the BMW eDrive technology aboard the new BMW i3 and new BMW i3s enables drivers to enjoy locally emission-free mobility with wonderfully instantaneous power delivery, efficient use of energy and an optimised range for a level of everyday practicality that even extends beyond the demands of purely urban travel. Both models draw their energy from the lithium-ion high-voltage battery developed by the BMW Group with a capacity of 94 ampere hours (Ah) or 33 kilowatt hours (kWh). A range extender engine can be ordered as an option for both the new BMW i3 and the new BMW i3s.

The new BMW i3 and new BMW i3s will celebrate their world premieres at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt/Main in September 2017. The global market launch will begin in November 2017.

Design: sporty look.

The new BMW i3 and new BMW i3s have a remarkably dynamic character by premium compact electric car standards, and a number of design tweaks have been included to express this to particularly striking effect in their visual appearance too. The unmistakable, avant-garde exterior styling has already picked up the iF gold award for product design and the World Car Design of the Year award along with other accolades, and it has now been enhanced by a number of deft design touches that clearly convey the sporty and stirring driving experience on offer.

The trademark BMW i Black Belt running from the bonnet over the roof to the car’s rear end is now complemented by A-pillars and roof lines that also sport a black finish. The range of paint finishes for the remaining body elements has been extended to include Melbourne Red metallic and Imperial Blue metallic. Besides these two new additions, customers can also choose from the non-metallic shades Capparis White and Fluid Black as well as Protonic Blue metallic and Mineral Grey metallic.

The restyling of the front and rear aprons places particular emphasis on the car’s width, which has the effect of signalling just how sporty both models are to drive and how sure their handling is. A chrome-design trim strip running across the full width of the rear and the positioning of the model and eDrive badges on the outer edges of the boot lid serves to reinforce this impression.

The new BMW i3 and new BMW i3s come equipped with all-LED headlights as standard, which employ LED bulb units for dipped beam and high beam as well as the daytime running lights. The new turn signal indicators also feature LED technology and are integrated into the front apron in the form of horizontal strips. This means that LEDs are now used for all lighting functions at the front of the vehicle too, as was already the case with the glass-covered rear light assemblies.

The new BMW i3: new styling accents for a sense of sporty elegance.

The thoughtful evolution of the exterior design not only helps to bring the sporting credentials of the new BMW i3 more to the fore, but highlights its sophisticated elegance too. The front bumper is completely painted in the body colour and has a black U-shaped surround that reinforces the car’s presence when viewed from the front. Moving round to the rear end, the powerfully moulded contours and the contrast in colour between the black surround and the body-coloured inlay again create an energetic and expressive appearance.

The new silver-coloured roof line accent for the new BMW i3 adds a further touch of elegance and dynamism. It widens towards the rear, thereby accentuating the stream flow, as the distinctive outline of the side windows is known.

The new BMW i3s: a thoroughly dynamic performer.

The new BMW i3s incorporates a number of design elements all of its own that underscore its particularly dynamic character. Both the front and rear aprons are notable for their model-specific, powerfully shaped contours. At the front, the bumper inlay as well as the U-shaped surround encircling it have a black finish. The front apron’s side sections are bordered on their lower edge by accent strips in BMW i Blue or Frozen Grey that further emphasise the width of the car. The accent in the closed BMW kidney grille is also painted in high-gloss black on the BMW i3s to give the grille a larger and more prominent appearance. The rear apron of the new BMW i3s is likewise composed of individually styled contours, while the black surround frames an extra-wide, body-coloured inlay. On the new BMW i3s, the roof line accent also sports the same high-gloss black finish as the A-pillars.

The new BMW i3s comes equipped as standard with sports suspension that includes a 10-millimetre drop in ride height. The additional 40 millimetres of track width compared to the BMW i3 is given added impact by the black wheel arch borders. The new BMW i3s is available with exclusive 20-inch light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design that are 20 millimetres wider than the previously available versions. They can be ordered in the Bicolour and Jet Black colour variants.

Interior: great sense of roominess, sustainable materials.

Like the exterior design, the interior styling of the new BMW i3 and new BMW i3s is rooted in the novel LifeDrive vehicle architecture. The carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell has a wonderfully spacious feel about it and is dominated by a sense of lightness. The design principle of the two four-seater models means there is no need for either fixed B-pillars or a transmission tunnel. Doors that open in opposite directions allow the occupants to get in and out with the greatest of ease.

The Loft, Lodge and Suite equipment lines are available for the new BMW i3 and new BMW i3s as alternatives to the standard Atelier version. The Lodge interior design option includes a new covering for the seat surfaces in Solaric Brown that combines natural leather tanned using an olive leaf extract with a wool-based textile material. The fact that the BMW i3 and BMW i3s also count sustainability among their premium characteristics shines through in the rest of the materials selected for them too, including recycled plastics, renewable raw materials, natural fibres and open-pored, unbleached eucalyptus wood. Over 80 percent of the surfaces visible to the passengers are made from recycled materials or renewable resources. The new blue seat belt option provides a splash of colour in the interior in typical brand style. The BMW i3s supplements all this with special model lettering on the front floor mats as standard.

Emission-free fun at the wheel: a more intense experience than ever, now with two power options.

The synchronous electric motor powering the new BMW i3 generates a maximum output of 125 kW/170 hp. Its peak torque is 250 Nm (184 lb-ft), all of which is available instantly from a standstill, as is usual with electric motors. This means that stepping on the accelerator pedal immediately unleashes a thrilling burst of speed. The motor smoothly delivers the kind of performance that drivers expect from a BMW via a single-speed automatic transmission, with continuous power delivery that builds up the car’s tempo in a characteristically dynamic fashion. 0-100 km/h (62 mph) is achieved by the new BMW i3 in 7.3 seconds. Its top speed is limited to 150 km/h (93 mph).

Located low in the vehicle floor, the lithium-ion high-voltage battery provides a range of 290 to 300 kilometres (180-186 miles)* based on the NEDC cycle, 235 to 255 kilometres (146 to 158 miles)** as per WLTP and up to 200 kilometres (124 miles)*** in everyday use. The combined electric power consumption of the new BMW i3 on the NEDC cycle varies between 13.6 and 13.1 kWh for every 100 kilometres*.

Bringing outstanding driving dynamics to the electric vehicle segment, with instantaneous torque, superb traction and precisely controllable drifts.

The agile handling characteristics of the BMW i3 are improved still further by the optimised Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system. This comprehensively revised, faster responding traction control system guarantees confident handling under all driving conditions. The BMW i3 now features a globally unique form of wheel speed limiting that ensures increased directional stability, both under dynamic acceleration and on the overrun with strong regenerative braking. Traction during pull-away on snow and wet roads has also been noticeably improved. DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) mode now boosts agility at higher speeds and during sporty cornering, even allowing mild and safely controllable drifts when grip levels are reduced.

The new BMW i3s provides an even sportier interpretation of silent mobility with zero local emissions and features a high-performance 135 kW/184 hp electric motor that generates peak torque of 270 Nm (199 lb-ft). Its updated drive system includes modified motor control and specific taper roller bearings, which have been utilised to further optimise power delivery and the performance curve at higher rpm. At the limits of the motor speed range, the power and torque of the further developed drive system represent an improvement of up to 40% for the BMW i3.

What’s more, the new BMW i3s boasts sports suspension with specially developed springs, dampers and anti-roll bars. Drivers can also select SPORT mode using the Driving Experience Control switch. This initiates more direct accelerator response and tighter steering characteristics to further accentuate the car’s sporting edge.

Just 6.9 seconds is enough to see the new BMW i3s burst past 100 km/h (62 mph) on its way to a top speed of 160 km/h (99 mph). It returns a combined electric power consumption of 14.3 kWh per 100 kilometres* on the NEDC cycle. Its electric range runs to 280 kilometres (174 miles)* based on the NEDC cycle, 235 to 245 kilometres (146 to 152 miles)** as per WLTP and up to 200 kilometres (124 miles)*** in everyday use.

A 28 kW/38 hp two-cylinder range extender petrol engine is available as an option for both the new BMW i3 and the new BMW i3s. The engine drives a generator that produces power as required while driving to maintain a constant level of charge in the high-voltage battery. This extends the car’s overall range in everyday use by 150 kilometres (93 miles), increasing it from around 180 kilometres (112 miles) to a maximum of 330 kilometres (205 miles)***. The all-electric range of the new BMW i3 with range extender is 225 to 235 kilometres (140 – 146 miles)* as per NEDC and 190 to 200 kilometres (118 – 124 miles)** as per WLTP. The corresponding figures for the new BMW i3s with range extender come in at 220 kilometres (137 miles)* on the NEDC and 185 to 195 kilometres (115 to 121 miles)** on the WLTP cycle.

On the NEDC cycle, the new BMW i3 with range extender returns combined consumption figures per 100 kilometres of 11.9 to 11.5 kWh of electric power and 0.6 litres of fuel (fuel consumption of 470.8 mpg imp; CO2 emissions: 14 –13 g/km)*. On the same combined NEDC cycle, the new BMW i3s with range extender consumes 12.5 kWh of electric power per 100 kilometres and 0.7 litres of fuel (fuel consumption of 403.5 mpg imp; CO2 emissions: 14 g/km)*.

Extensive range of driver assistance systems: Parking Assistant and Traffic Jam Assistant take over control of steering.

The driver assistance systems available for the new BMW i3 and BMW i3s ease the driver’s workload and provide support in various traffic situations, as well as helping with longitudinal and lateral vehicle control. The optional Parking Assistance package includes Park Distance Control, a reversing camera and the Parking Assistant. Once a suitable parking space parallel to the road has been selected, the Parking Assistant takes control of acceleration, braking, gear selection and steering.

Driving Assistant Plus, also available as an option, incorporates Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function, Speed Limit Info, Proactive Driving Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, and the Traffic Jam assistant, which not only maintains a safe distance to the car in front in stop-start traffic at up to 60 km/h (37 mph), but also keeps the car in lane. The system takes its cues from lane markings, the width of the road and vehicles travelling ahead.

Further developed iDrive system, BMW i ConnectedDrive with navigation features and On-Street Parking Information specially developed for electric mobility.

Both the new BMW i3 and new BMW i3s come with an updated version of the iDrive operating system, which provides an intuitive interface for controlling numerous vehicle, infotainment, communications and navigation functions. In vehicles equipped with the Navigation system Professional, the Control Display has a diagonal of 10.25 inches and an increased resolution of 1,440 × 540 pixels. The main menu is also presented in the form of horizontally arranged tiles with a live mode. The voice recognition system has also been further optimised. With the aid of Natural Language Understanding, spoken instructions can now be executed more quickly and precisely, e.g. when searching for music and phone numbers or dictating e-mails and SMS messages. New to the options list is Apple CarPlay preparation. This allows additional smartphone apps to be integrated seamlessly with the vehicle’s operating system.

The further expanded BMW i ConnectedDrive offering – unmatched by any rival – ensures intelligent connectivity through services specially tailored to electric mobility. The digital On-Street Parking Information search service, now available for the first time in the BMW i3 (but unfortunately not available in Belgium nor Luxembourg), can also be used alongside the Real Time Traffic Information system if the Navigation system Professional is specified. Public charging stations and information about their availability can also be displayed on the navigation system’s map. When route guidance is activated, data about the route is also used to calculate the range shown in the instrument cluster as accurately as possible. The range map provides a visual representation of the current operating radius. It is also possible to display the different ranges achievable in each of the Driving Experience Control modes. BMW i-specific navigation features also include intermodal route guidance. This helps users to quickly and efficiently reach their destination by factoring in local public transport timetables and connections. Regular, automatic updates of the navigation data are now also provided “over the air” in the BMW i3, using a mobile network connection (Not available in Belgium nor Luxembourg).

A package of new services were introduced in July 2017 under the BMW Connected+ banner which enable a highly personalised and more straightforward display of information inside the car. All of the digital services related to BMW Connected and BMW Connected+ will be available in the BMW i3 and BMW i3s. These span intelligent route planning, including stop-offs at charging stations or petrol stations (Send my Routes to Car), sharing of the car’s current location via SMS and live link (Share Live Trip Status), personalised display of relevant in-car information (BMW Onboard), seamless transfer of route instructions to the customer’s smartphone or smartwatch once the car is parked (Navigate Door-to-Door) and direct syncing of contacts and addresses to the navigation system (My Destinations).

BMW Digital Charging Service enables intelligent charging.

The BMW Digital Charging Service brings customers the future of charging, today. BMW ConnectedDrive and the BMW ConnectedDrive Portal turn charging into a digital experience. As a result, the BMW i3 and BMW i3s are integrated perfectly into the customer’s smart ecosystem. This allows BMW customers to optimise charging costs, make best use of self-generated solar energy for charging and even earn money through integration into the smart grid. The service’s ease of use – from a smartphone via BMW Connected or from PCs and tablets via the BMW ConnectedDrive Portal – also facilitates fully transparent, sustainable use of renewable energy. With the introduction of its unique BMW Digital Charging Service, BMW becomes the world’s first carmaker to integrate electric mobility with its customers’ digital worlds.

360° ELECTRIC: new charging cable, BMW i Wallbox Connect.

360° ELECTRIC is a range of products and services that help make electric mobility a convenient, everyday experience. The functionality of the standard charging cable supplied with the new BMW i3s has been optimised and includes a temperature sensor. Charging at home is extremely user-friendly thanks to the BMW i Wallbox which, in its most recent incarnation, can supply 11 kW of power to charge the high-voltage battery. This allows enough energy for an electric range of around 180 kilometres (112 miles) to be transferred in under three hours – five times quicker than with the standard charging cable. The new BMW i Wallbox Connect also extends the functionality of the globally unique Digital Charging Service to provide intelligent charging for optimal cost efficiency, and allows customers to make best use of self-generated solar energy. In addition, it is also possible to control the charging process using a smartphone app and manage usage by means of an access card. Drivers with a registered ChargeNow card have unrestricted access to the world’s largest network of public charging stations.

In de jaren ’80 creëerde een Italiaanse groep kunstenaars en architecten onder de naam Memphis Design Group een opvallende visuele stijl met felle kleuren, originele grafische patronen en geometrische vormen. Hiermee ging de groep in tegen het functionalisme en de commerciële logica van die tijd én tegen het minimalisme van de jaren 70. Premium autobouwer BMW stak een futuristische BMW i3 en BMW i8 in een Memphis Design-jasje en brengt deze wagens nu voor het eerst naar ons land.

BMW i8 Mythic Editions in grootste BMW i8 showroom ter wereld.

In de BMW Brand Store aan de Brusselse Louisalaan kan je nog tot en met donderdag 17 augustus terecht om deze kunstwerken te bewonderen. Wie zelfs nog vóór 10 augustus gaat, zal er ook vijf BMW i8’en in mythische koetswerkkleuren kunnen ontdekken: Avusblau, British Racing Green, Carbonschwarz, Frozen Silver en Pure Black. Deze wagens zullen aansluitend van 14 tot 26 augustus samen met onder andere een BMW i8 CrossFade Edition in het BMW Driving Center te Bornem tentoon gesteld worden in de grootste BMW i8 showroom ter wereld.

MemphisStyle Edition BMW i3 en BMW i8.

De MemphisStyle Edition BMW i3 en BMW i8 zijn vormgegeven door Lapo Elkann, Chairman en Creative Director van Garage Italia Customs. Elkann is gespecialiseerd in het ontwerpen van designs op maat voor diverse voertuigen. “Ik deel de visie van BMW, waarbij een blik op de toekomst en technologische innovatie in ieder project de belangrijkste elementen vormen”, zegt Elkann. “Creativiteit, stijl en innovatie hebben altijd een sleutelrol gespeeld in al het designwerk van mijn team. Deze samenwerking heeft mij de kans gegeven om mijn grote passie voor Memphis-artiesten te vieren. Ik verzamel al enige tijd diverse topstukken van deze kunstbeweging die mij elke dag inspireren. Ik kan niet anders dan trots zijn op het resultaat van mijn bedrijf. Opnieuw hebben mijn designers de verwachtingen overtroffen: ze hebben de ware essentie van Memphis Design overgebracht op deze futuristische one-offs.”

De Memphis Group en BMW i.

De Memphis Group werd in 1981 opgericht door Ettore Sottsass en was een absolute tegenstelling tot functionalisme en commerciële logica. De groep werkte vernieuwend en daagde mainstream design uit door gebruik van ongewone materialen en originele grafische patronen. De stijl was duidelijk provocatief en geïnspireerd op de opvallende geometrische vormen van Art Deco, de felle kleuren van Pop Art en Kitsch om los te komen van het minimalistische design van de jaren zeventig.

Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President van BMW Group Design: “Tijdens de jaren tachtig en negentig trok de Memphis Group de formele ernst en klassieke functionaliteit van designartefacten in twijfel, zowel op een enigszins provocerende als grappige manier. Op deze manier werd Memphis een symbool van hedendaags design. Memphis Groep daagde met zijn ontwerpen bestaande dogma's uit, maakte emoties los maar creëerde ook ontwerpen met een hoge herkenningswaarde.”

Van Hooydonk vervolgt: “De BMW Group heeft een soortgelijke benadering toegepast met het ontwerpen van de BMW i modellen, door typisch autodesign in twijfel te trekken, nieuwe terreinen te ontdekken en auto’s compleet nieuw te ontwerpen. Vroegere elektrische voertuigen waren voornamelijk bedoeld om op te vallen. BMW paste eveneens een nieuwe benadering toe wat betreft materiaalgebruik. BMW was bijvoorbeeld de eerste autofabrikant ter wereld die op grote schaal met koolstofvezel versterkt kunststof (CFRP) toepaste in serieproductie. We bedanken Lapo Elkann van Garage Italia Customs voor de creatieve en inspirerende samenwerking, maar zijn ook erg trots op de nauwe betrokkenheid van Michele de Lucchi, een van de oprichters van de Memphis Design Group, bij dit project.”

Michele de Lucchi herinnert zich de eerste jaren van de Memphis Group nog goed, net als zijn motivatie om de groep te helpen oprichten.

“Memphis brengt mij terug naar mijn jeugdjaren, de beginjaren in Milaan en vooral naar de vriendschap met oprichter Ettore Sottsass”, zegt De Lucchi. “Ik was 28 jaar oud. Het leven zag er toen heel anders uit. We wilden de grote stijltradities doorbreken, revolutionair zijn en bewijzen dat revolutie ook mogelijk was door het ontwerpen van objecten en de aanwezigheid daarvan. We waren op zoek naar een nieuwe definitie van de reden van ons bestaan. In die jaren waren hedendaagse onderwerpen als minder duurzame leefgewoontes, post-postmoderne waarden en ongewenste politieke verschuivingen niet aan de orde. Hoewel, we hadden al wel het verlangen om het ongebreidelde consumentisme te stoppen en meer diepgang te vinden. Niet met negativiteit, maar met optimisme: het vieren van vormgeving en met een kleurrijk vleugje van echte betrokkenheid. Op deze manier is de kern van Memphis, van wat wij deden en verlangden, tijdloos.”

BMW i MemphisStyle: hypnotische patronen en felle kleuren.

Schuine, horizontale en verticale lijnen maar ook hypnotische patronen en levendige kleuren zijn de belangrijkste kenmerken van deze nieuwe liveries, ontworpen door Garage Italia Customs. Opvallend is dat elk element perfect aansluit en dat de geometrische vormen moeiteloos de rondingen van het koetswerk van beide auto’s volgen. De realisatie gebeurde extreem nauwkeurig en nam vijf weken in beslag. Nog voor de diverse spuitprocessen werden er verschillende maskers aangebracht om bepaalde patronen te creëren. Er zijn niet minder dan acht kleurlagen op het koetswerk aangebracht, wat de complexiteit van dit project benadrukt. Ook in het interieur van zowel de BMW i3 als BMW i8 keert het typische Memphis Design terug. De diverse materialen, waaronder technische stoffen, Alcantara® en Foglizzo leder, zorgen voor groot contrast. Felle kleuren, zoals oranje, paars, groen en geel, zijn de hoofdkleuren in de grafische patronen in het interieur. Elk element in de cabine is onderdeel van de artistieke designtaal die in de jaren tachtig als schokkend werd ervaren en die in de jaren daarna van grote invloed was op design en inrichting.

De MemphisStyle Edition BMW i3 en BMW i8 zijn one-offs. Garage Italia Customs levert de speciale livery echter wel aan BMW i-klanten die interesse hebben.

De twee BMW DTM piloten Marco Wittmann (GER) en Bruno Spengler (CAN) namen het op donderdag tegen elkaar op in een speciale “opwarmingsrace”. De DTM kampioenen van 2012 (Spengler), 2014 en 2016 (Wittmann) gingen een efficiëntie-uitdaging aan in twee BMW i3s, om op die manier hun trip van Garching (bij München) naar de Norisring te maken.

Both racing drivers were aiming to use as little energy as possible on the way to the fourth DTM race weekend of the season, driving the two cars.

The route first took Wittmann and Spengler along minor roads from Garching to Ingolstadt (GER). They then continued the journey to Nuremberg (GER) on the motorway. Wittmann arrived at the Dutzendteich with a range of 133 kilometres remaining, while Spengler’s on-board computer still showed 121 kilometres. Victory in the efficiency challenge therefore went to the BMW Team RMG driver.

“Challenging Bruno with the BMW i3 was great fun,” said Wittmann, who will enjoy home advantage at the Norisring. “We stayed in the slipstream of the lorries on the motorway to save as much energy as possible. We made it easily – and now we are looking forward to racing at the weekend.”

“It was rather unusual for us as racing drivers to be driving as efficiently as possible, instead of as fast as possible,” said Spengler. “But the challenge was great fun. The BMW i3 is an excellent car and the remaining range shows that longer journeys are no problem at all.” The BMW i3 has a battery capacity of 94 ampere hours, greatly increasing the range when compared to the previous model.

This coming weekend, Wittmann and Spengler will leave the BMW i3 and return to the cockpits of their BMW M4 DTMs at the Norisring. The seventh and eighth DTM races of the season then will be all about pure performance.

Hannover. Op de Hannover Messe 2017, de grootste industriële beurs ter wereld die plaats vindt van 24 tot 28 april, zal BMW Group samen met partners enkele concepten en nieuwe technologieën voorstellen onder de noemer “NewEnergy-4-Mobibility2050”. Dit initiatief richt zich op energievoorziening voor emissievrije elektrische mobiliteit en kijkt vooruit naar 2050.

Well-founded calculations carried out in tandem with the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE will show visitors to the Hannover Messe how a progressive transition to renewable energy sources can allow the German government to meet its greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets by 2050. At a series of interconnected stands, partners involved in the initiative from the electricity generating and energy supply sectors and from industry will be demonstrating technologies which can enable this transformation, as well as new areas of business which might emerge.

The BMW Group can be found at Stand B59 in Hall 27 and will be showcasing the zero-emission vehicles BMW i3 and a hydrogen fuel-cell demonstration vehicle based on the BMW 5 Series GT. At the same stand, Shell will be showing a hydrogen fuelling pump which the energy company has developed in partnership with Designworks, a BMW subsidiary. This innovative fuel pump dispenser illustrates how quickly and easily drivers can fill up their cars with hydrogen, while simultaneously providing a glimpse of future mobility.

‘Vision Zero’ in electric mobility.

In its actions and business practices, the BMW Group has always followed an integrated approach centred around the application of sustainability throughout the value chain. For example, the CO2 emissions generated by the BMW i3 in the supply chain, through production, as part of everyday use and in the recycling process are at least a third lower than for a conventional vehicle of a comparable type. The BMW i3 is the only vehicle worldwide whose product concept is geared squarely towards avoiding emissions of CO2. At the same time, the success of the BMW i3 as the best-selling electric vehicle in its segment is proof that sustainability need not mean compromising on driving pleasure or desirability.

A pioneering combination: BMW eDrive and hydrogen fuel-cell technology.

The hydrogen fuel-cell demonstration vehicle based on the BMW 5 Series GT on show at the Hannover Messe combines locally emission-free mobility with sporty handling, a high level of energy efficiency, everyday usability thanks to fast refuelling times and an appetite for covering long distances. The fuel cell converts the hydrogen gas carried in its storage tank into electricity and water vapour, generating 180 kW/245 hp to drive the electric motor. With a net capacity of around one kilowatt hour, the vehicle’s high-voltage battery acts as a temporary storage mechanism and can therefore be considerably smaller than in battery-electric concepts. The strategic alliance agreed between the BMW Group and the Toyota Motor Company in 2013 provides additional impetus and increases the companies’ capacity to turn hydrogen fuel-cell technology into reality.

It is the aim of the BMW Group to establish hydrogen fuel-cell electric drive systems as a long-term second source of locally emission-free mobility alongside battery-electric drive systems. The result is a versatile potential portfolio of drive systems which can be adapted flexibly to different vehicle concepts, customer requirements and legislative circumstances.

BMW i will debut as the exclusive transportation partner at the Coachella Valley Music & Art Festival in 2017, providing VIP shuttle service and hospitality during the weekends of April 14-16 and 21-23. A stand-out feature of the BMW i3 fleet at Coachella is a unique wrap that was created especially for the occasion, its design reflecting the creative and unconventional character of the event. A social media campaign entitled “Road to Coachella” kicked-off the partnership on March 14. The campaign offers festival goers the chance to be entered into a drawing to win a festival pass by documenting their preparation for the festival and their own journey to Coachella Valley via social media using the hashtag #RoadToCoachella. 

Renowned composer and music producer Hans Zimmer (“Inception”, “Pearl Harbor”, “The Dark Knight” and “The Lion King”) has provided the soundtrack for a video promoting “Road to Coachella.

The three-minute piece, which debuted on April 9 on BMW’s YouTube Channel, is set to a Zimmer’s music and features the BMW i8 hybrid electric sports car, while providing a look at his preparations as he and his orchestra ready for their first-ever Coachella performance. Also featured in the video are fellow Coachella performers including Marshmello, Galantis, Ryan Rabin of Grouplove, Warpaint and Broods.

Furthermore, BMW i will invite visitors during the festival to visit the innovative BMW i Brand Lounge in the VIP Area, where they can experience up close the allure of BMW i and the unique Coachella design, co-developed with Garage Italia Customs.

Tussen 1995 en 2010 nam Martial Chouvel deel aan meer dan 200 races op Belgische circuits en die van onze buurlanden. Het leverde hem de titel van Europees kampioen en Vicekampioen van België op, alsook tal van trofeeën.

Gouden kans van BMW.

Het was zijn streven naar uitmuntendheid en naar dat tiende van een seconde dat het team BMW Juma overtuigde om hem achter het stuur te zetten van een BMW M3 tijdens de 24 Uur van Spa-Francorchamps in 1997. Een testrit die hij met glans doorstond, want het team eindigde dat jaar als eerste en tweede in zijn klasse.

M3 wordt i3.

Vandaag volgt Martial Chouvel nog altijd de evolutie in de autowereld op de voet, al heeft hij zijn raceoverall ondertussen ingeruild voor een maatpak om zijn functie als bedrijfsleider te vervullen. Ook de M3 is ondertussen een i3 geworden, maar het rijplezier is er niet minder om: “Ik vind het fantastisch om de technologie aan boord - en wat ze me elke dag opnieuw te bieden heeft - te analyseren. We zijn dan wel niet meer op het circuit, maar de zoektocht naar uitmuntendheid is nog lang niet voorbij. Wat de ingenieurs van BMW in 10 jaar tijd bereikt hebben, is gewoonweg ongelooflijk.”

Mmm... lekker.

BMW trakteerde Martial op een namiddag vol nostalgie achter het stuur van zijn M3. Een uitnodiging waar de man gretig op inging. Het duurde dan ook niet lang voor hij de rijsensaties herontdekte die eigenlijk nooit echt vergeten waren: “Deze wagen was gewoon geweldig. Ik herinner me alles nog alsof het gisteren was.”

De BMW i3 en BMW i8 Garage Italia CrossFade Editions onderscheiden zich niet enkel langs buiten van de futuristische BWM i3 en BMW i8. Zo zorgt onder meer een aangepaste binnenbekleding in Alcantara en Foglizzo leder in pointillistisch design voor een artistieke toets.

Om het geheel in de kijker te zetten zal kersverse BMW i Friend en Brusselaar dj Henri PFR op 21 december een unieke dj-set spelen in eigen stad. Kunst en BMW.

BMW brengt al sinds 1975 kunst naar zijn meest sportieve wagens dankzij de BMW Art Cars. De voorbije week werd BMW Art Car nummer 19 door Amerikaans kunstenaar John Baldessari uitgebreid voorgesteld aan het grote publiek. Deze BMW M6 GTLM zal in het voorjaar van 2017 zijn kleuren verdedigen op het circuit.

“Net zoals het pointilisme in zijn tijd heel vooruitstrevend en vernieuwend was, is dat vandaag het geval voor de BMW i3 en BMW i8. Door gebruik te maken van nieuwe technieken brengen zowel BMW als het pointillisme elk in zijn tijd een ongeziene ervaring. Drie jaar na de lancering van BMW i zijn er wereldwijd al meer dan 60.000 BMW i3’s verkocht. Hierdoor is de wagen de meest verkochte elektrische wagen in zijn segment. Verschillende Belgische bedrijven zijn reeds een samenwerking met BMW i aangegaan door hun werknemers te voorzien van een BMW i3. Schréder is als Belgisch bedrijf al meer dan een eeuw dé markleider op gebied van publieke en professionele verlichting. Met de nieuwe kolom Shuffle kijkt Schréder naar de toekomst door zich te concentreren op diensten zoals verlichting, beveiliging, infotainment, draadloze connectiviteit en e-mobility.

Het R&D centrum van Schréder in Luik werd reeds voorzien van dergelijke faciliteiten. In het centrum kan Schréder alle laatste ontwikkelingen en innovaties samen met de technologie van vandaag laten zien aan hun meer dan 500 bezoekers per jaar uit de hele wereld. In deze context en met de elektrische oplaadfunctie in het achterhoofd heeft Schréder dan ook gekozen voor de BMW i3, een model dat volledig ontwikkeld werd in functie van elektrische mobiliteit. De specialist in verlichting koos voor de kleur Protonic Blue omdat die kleur doet denken aan de lichtgevende ring die geïntegreerd is in de kolom Shuffle, en oplicht wanneer de wagen wordt opgeladen.

De BMW i3’s van Schréder zullen ook gebruikt worden tijdens verplaatsingen met bezoekers. En, ze kunnen uiteraard ook dagelijks gebruikt worden door de werknemers van Schréder, zo kunnen ook zij de elektrische mobiliteit van een BMW i3 ervaren.

Sinds de komst van de nieuwe batterij biedt de BMW i3 een nog grotere autonomie, met 300 km rijbereik (NEDC). De aanpak van Schréder is net als die van SWIFT het resultaat van hun verlangen om alternatieve bedrijfsmobiliteit op te zetten. Met deze concrete aanpak zetten bedrijven in op stedelijke mobiliteit. Het Belgische marktonderzoeksbureau InSites behoort tot de drie meest innovatieve researchbureau’s van de wereld. Daar bovenop kiezen ze voor een duurzame groei, zowel op vlak van strategie voor klanten als voor zichzelf. In dat kader neemt het bedrijf vandaag elf BMW i3’s op in zijn wagenpark én voorziet het laadpalen bij zowel zijn personeel als op het werk. Zo worden ze na SWIFT in één klap het grootste BMW i3-park van België.

De BMW i3 biedt sinds deze zomer een rijbereik van 300km volgens de NEDC-cyclus, en dus ruim meer dan 200km in dagdagelijkse rijomstandigheden. Door de keuze voor de BMW i3 Advanced (omvat o.a. navigatie en uitgebreide smartphone-connectiviteitsmogelijkheden) en toevoeging van zetelverwarming en snellaadmogelijkheden te voorzien, komt de wagen tegemoet aan de mobiliteitsnoden van de moderne professional. Dat was doorslaggevend voor InSites, wiens consultants regelmatig afspraken hebben over het hele land.

Hele organisatie draagt de keuze voor elektrisch rijden.

Voor InSites is het belangrijk dat de hele organisatie betrokken wordt bij deze duurzaamheidskeuze. Om de elf medewerkers toch de kans te geven met een eigen wagen op een verre vakantie te gaan, bouwt het onderzoeksbureau samen met EV-Point, die ook de laadinfrastructuur voorziet, een interne digitale marktplaats waar quasi alle wagens van hun medewerkers in beschikbaar zijn. Zo kunnen de elektrische rijders tot 30 dagen per jaar beroep doen op een wagen met verbrandingsmotor én kunnen de andere collega’s proeven van het elektrisch rijplezier van een BMW i3.

Om de elektrificatie van zijn vloot te ondersteunen, voorziet InSites in een parking die de elektrische chauffeurs bevoordeeld met een VIP-plaats: het dichtst bij de ingang, gereserveerd voor e-rijders én overdekt. In totaal voorziet het bedrijf méér van dergelijke VIP-parkeergelegenheden dan dat er vandaag BMW i3’s zijn. Zo is het bedrijf ook klaar om in de toekomst verdere stappen te zetten.

“InSites wil zowel voor zijn klanten als voor zichzelf de best mogelijke keuzes maken. Voor ons wagenpark vertaalt zich dit naar een engagement vanuit de hele organisatie richting elektrisch rijden met de BMW i3. Zo hebben onze medewerkers één van de meest ecologische wagens vandaag op de markt, die tegelijk hoogtechnologisch is – net zoals wij zelf zijn”, zegt InSites’ fleetmanager Gunter Van de Velde.

Duurzaamheid in de hele vloot.

De wagens van BMW zijn trouwens ook het voorkeursmerk voor de andere wagens bij InSites. Ook die keuze is ingefluisterd door hun milieubewustzijn: het bedrijf kiest steeds voor de laagste CO2-uitstoot qua motorisatie en daar scoort BMW ook sterk met zijn wagens met verbrandingsmotoren dankzij het BMW EfficientDynamics-programma.

Het geheel wordt gerealiseerd in samenwerking met BMW Verstraeten, BMW Belux, Leaseplan en EV-point.

Naar aanleiding van de overhandiging van de eerste BMW i3 in Protonic Blue aan de Dodentocht-organisatie, stelt BMW Group Belux extra foto's ter beschikking van de BMW i3 in het Belgische verkeer en aan lokale oplaadpunten. In de bijlage vindt u de basisinformatie over deze nieuwe BMW i3.

De Dodentocht is een sportieve uithoudingstocht bij uitstek, die wandelaars in 24 uur een afstand van 100 km laat afleggen. Om de tocht goed voor te bereiden, kan de organisatie de komende periode rekenen op de nieuwe BMW i3. Deze elektrische stadswagen is sinds deze maand beschikbaar met 50% extra batterijcapaciteit, waardoor bij dagelijks gebruik tot 200 kilometer kan worden afgelegd – oftewel twee keer het parcours van de Dodentocht na elkaar.

BMW ondersteunt de Dodentochtorganisatie al zo’n twintig jaar, steeds met verschillende wagens. Zo is er steeds een BMW X3 of BMW X5 bij om onmiddellijke assistentie te kunnen bieden langsheen het hele parcours, waarvan sommige paadjes midden tussen de velden lopen.

“Met de nieuwe, krachtigere batterij van de BMW i3 beschikt de organisatie van de Dodentocht enerzijds over een krachtige wagen die altijd direct inzetbaar is en anderzijds kunnen ze hun ecologische impact verkleinen”, zegt Thomas Heyens, verantwoordelijke van BMW i.

“Voor de Dodentocht is onze ecologische voetafdruk belangrijk en hebben we reeds verschillende initiatieven genomen. Zo is er een MEP ploeg die instaat voor het plaatsen en ophalen van vuilbakken over een afstand van +/- 20 km én het sorteren van afval, een milieucharter waar we de sponsors / leveranciers vragen om zo veel mogelijk in bulk te leveren, met zo weinig mogelijk verpakking, het gebruik van herbruikbare drinkbekers in het centrum én de lancering van de biologisch afbreekbare drinkbussen voor wandelaars. We maken dan ook graag gebruik van de nieuwe BMW i3, want dankzij de grotere elektrische range kunnen we onze mobiliteitsnood op een groene manier invullen. " zegt Gunter Vergauwen, hoofd-coördinator 100 km Dodentocht.

BMW i3 voortaan met krachtigere batterij.

De BMW i3 (94 Ah) heeft een bruto capaciteit van 33 kilowattuur (kWh), dankzij de hogere opslagdichtheid van de lithium-ioncellen. De afmetingen van de accu blijven ongewijzigd, met een toename van meer dan 50 procent in de standaard NEDC-cyclus, die nu 300 kilometer bedraagt in plaats van 190 kilometer.

Zelfs bij dagelijks gebruik, in slechte weersomstandigheden en met de airconditioning of verwarming ingeschakeld kan met een volledige acculading 200 kilometer worden afgelegd. De rijprestaties van de hybride synchrone elektromotor van 125 kW/170 pk blijven vrijwel ongewijzigd. De motor laat de BMW i3 in 7,3 seconden van 0 tot 100 km/u accelereren. Dat maakt van de BMW i3 zowel de sportiefste als de zuinigste elektrische wagen in zijn segment, met een stroomverbruik van 12,6 kWh/100 km (NEDC).

BMW i3 met Range Extender biedt méér dan 300km autonomie.

De uitvoering met Range Extender krijgt deze upgrade naar 94 Ah ook. In dit geval houdt een 2-cilinder benzinemotor de lading van de accu constant tijdens het rijden en die verlengt op die manier het rijbereik met nog eens 100 tot maximum 150 kilometer (BMW i3 (94 Ah): 11,3 kWh/100 km; gecombineerde CO2-emissie: 12g/km).

De aanbevolen verkoopprijs is € 37.200,00 inclusief BTW voor de BMW i3 (94 Ah) en €41.690,00 voor de BMW i3 (94 Ah) met Range Extender.

Met de introductie van de BMW i3 (94 Ah) biedt BMW i ook nieuwe en krachtigere laadstations voor thuisgarages en nieuwe uitrustingsopties aan. Ook kunnen klanten hun accu van de eerste generatie in het kader van een speciaal vervangprogramma laten vervangen door een accu van het nieuwe type – dit is mogelijk dankzij het modulaire en flexibele ontwerp van de BMW i3. De aanbevolen verkoopprijs is € 37.200,00 inclusief BTW voor de BMW i3 (94 Ah) en €41.690,00 voor de BMW i3 (94 Ah) met Range Extender. De aanbevolen prijs voor de een upgrade zal later via de concessiehouders beschikbaar zijn voor de geïnteresseerde klanten. Higher storage density of the the battery cells.
The BMW i3 (94 Ah) sets a new benchmark in its segment with 94 ampere hours (Ah) cell capacity, approx. 33 kWh battery energy and an electric range of 300 kilometres according to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) in combination with hallmark BMW driving performance.

Consuming only 12.6 kWh/100 km (NEDC), it is the most efficient car with the lowest electricity consumption costs of 3.15 EUR/100 km**, or even lower. The range of the new BMW i3 (94 Ah), on a full battery charge with the air conditioning or the heating on has been significantly increased to 200 km in everyday use. This is achieved with no subjective loss of driving performance and agility: in spite of the considerably higher battery density, the BMW i3 (94 Ah) almost reaches the record figures held by the BMW i3 (60 Ah) in the segment of compact electric vehicles. Both BMW i models strike the ideal balance between efficiency, performance and range. From standstill to country-road speeds, the BMW i3 (94 Ah) is on par with sporty, conventionally combustion engine powered cars.

The high-voltage battery of the BMW i3 consists of eight modules with twelve storage cells each and its capacity has increased significantly without any changes in exterior dimensions. By optimising the cell-internal packages with more electrolyte and adapting the active material, BMW and Samsung SDI have succeeded in increasing cell capacity to 94 Ah and overall battery energy to 33 kWh of which 29 kWh can be effectively used. The battery of the BMW i3 (60 Ah) produces 22 kWh (gross)/19 kWh (net).

A benchmark also in terms of sustainability.
The BMW i engineers only had to undertake minor modifications to integrate the new battery. Already in the development phase of the BMW i3, the entire architecture of the electric drivetrain was designed with the next technological steps in mind. Now that the battery modules need to be climatised, no structural changes are necessary. This highlights how universal and forward thinking the vehicle concept really is. As before it is also possible to exchange a single battery module instead of the entire battery if required in the BMW i3. This is a stand-alone feature within the competitive field and represents an integral component of the holistic BMW i concept of sustainability. The BMW i3 continues to score significantly better than a modern diesel or petrol engined car in the overall CO2 balance consisting of supply chain, production, service life and recycling.

When the BMW i3 was launched in 2013, it was the first car with a TÜV-certified life cycle assessment, which was at least one third better than reached by any conventional car. This is achieved to a large extent through the CO2 free electricity supply of the BMW i production sites in Leipzig (assembly) and Moses Lake (CFRP production) as well as through the use of 70 per cent less water in the production process compared to conventional automobiles.

The lithium ion cells used, set themselves apart in the competitive field by achieving a special balance between high energy density, cycle stability and safety in the case of a crash. The coolant of the air conditioning system is responsible for cooling the high-voltage battery very effectively. An optional heating system can also be used to heat the battery to ensure the optimum operating temperature of 20 degrees Celsius before starting off. The battery has been designed to last for the car’s entire service life. Customers receive an 8-year or 100,000 kilometre warranty on the battery.

Retrofit programme: the battery can be exchanged optionally.
The main focus at BMW i is on sustainability. The customer is given the assurance that his BMW i3 can be adapted to the latest technical developments in a resource-saving way. This is safe-guarded by the flexible LifeDrive vehicle architecture. The BMW i3 is the first automobile in the premium compact segment in the world to have been designed from scratch as a purely electrically powered vehicle. This design also includes retrofitting new battery technologies.

With the introduction of the new 94 Ah battery, BMW gives BMW i customers the opportunity of retrofitting their purely electric BMW i3 (60 Ah) with the new 33 kWh battery as part of a high-voltage retrofit programme. This programme is available in selected markets. The 22 kWh batteries traded-in by customers are used to build stationary storage battery modules thus starting their second life. This effectively proves how sustainable BMW i technology is across its entire production and service life cycle.

Optimised performance delivery, more efficient drive.
The BMW i3 is by far the lightest car in its segment. Despite of the weight increase to now 1,245 kilograms, the BMW i3 (94 Ah) is characterised by driving performance, which is subjectively as agile as the 60 Ah model variant. This has been achieved by modifying power electronics and systems management and results in an optimised performance curve. In addition, there is the physically related improvement of the voltage curve under load for the new 94 Ah battery. 

The BMW i3 (94 Ah) is also powered by the hybrid synchronous electric motor especially developed by the BMW Group. The power unit generates an output of 125 kW/170 hp and delivers 250 Newton metres of torque which is available from standstill. The BMW i3 (94 Ah) completes the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. It reaches a speed of 60 km/h within a mere 3.8 seconds.

The sporty elasticity performance figure of 5.1 seconds for accelerating from 80 to 120 km/h, a decisive factor for enabling fast and safe passing manoeuvres, is normally only achieved by combustion engine powered cars with considerably higher outputs. In this domain the BMW i3 (94 Ah) is on a level with cars such as the 240 kW (326 hp) BMW 440i Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 7.7–7.4 l/100; combined CO2 emissions: 179/–172 g/km)*. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via the single-speed transmission which the BMW i3 uses to accelerate without torque interruption to 150 km/h (limited top speed for reasons of efficiency). This applies to both battery variants.

The electricity consumption of the BMW i3 (94 Ah) has also been reduced by a large number of detail improvements including revised electric motor management as well as advanced low-resistance tyres. In the NEDC it consumes 12.6 kWh/100 km. This is the best value in the competitive field. The BMW i3 (60 Ah) consumes 12.9 kWh/100 km.

New, faster charging electronics: three-phase charging up to 11 kW.
In principle, a 50 percent higher battery capacity would also mean longer charging times – if the charging technology had not been adapted to the new requirements. In order to keep up with the increased battery capacity when charging with alternating current (AC), the AC fast charging system was developed. With the new 94 Ah battery, multi-phase AC charging is extended to 11 kW charging capacity and thus is in line with the charging capacity standards widely used in the public charging infrastructure.

The new, higher-performance charging electronics of the BMW i3 (94 Ah) can use three-phase charging currents with 11 kW.

This represents a 50 percent increase compared to the BMW i3 (60 Ah). The 60 Ah model can be charged using single-phase alternating current at 7.4 kW. This means the charging time for the BMW i3 (94 Ah) is less than three hours, in spite of the significantly larger battery capacity – which is the same time it takes for today’s 60 Ah battery at 7.4 kW charging current.

The BMW i3 is equipped with a charging cable as standard for connecting it to a domestic power socket. The BMW i3 (94 Ah) can be recharged in less than ten hours at a charging current of 2.8 kW. The BMW i3 (60 Ah) battery requires approximately eight hours for this. Core elements such as range, hallmark BMW agility thanks to low weight and overnight battery charging remain in place.

Today, the BMW i3 is equipped with the future-proof 50 kW direct current (DC) fast charging technology. When the BMW i3 (94 Ah) is connected to a DC fast charging station, the battery cells are charged up to a minimum of 80 percent of their capacity within less than 40 minutes. In the BMW i3 (60 Ah) this takes 25 minutes. This means that the BMW i3 (94 Ah) achieves a charging speed of 4 km/min which corresponds to 24 minutes charging time per 100 kilometres of range.

Range Extender for even greater range.
BMW i also offers a Range Extender for the BMW i3 (94 Ah).The range of the BMW i3 is extended by a 650 cubic centimetre 2-cylinder petrol engine which is located in direct proximity to the electric drive above the rear axle. The Range Extender delivers a maximum output of 28 kW/38 hp and powers a generator in order to produce electricity. It operates on a needs-based and highly efficient principle. As soon as the charging level of the lithium ion batteries drops to a certain level, the Range Extender kicks in to keep the charging level constant thus extending the range by 150 kilometres under everyday conditions. Fitting the car with the Range Extender has no influence on the available luggage volume: the nine-litre fuel tank is installed in the front section. The luggage compartment volume remains unchanged at 260 litres and can be extended to 1,100 litres with the rear seats folded down.

The BMW i3 (94 Ah) with Range Extender may weigh in with an extra 120 kilograms of weight but is also characterised by a high level of agility and offers impressive performance figures. It accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds. The emissions of the BMW i3 (94 Ah) with Range Extender amounts to 12 g/km CO2 (NEDC) while the exclusively electrically powered BMW i3 produces zero emissions locally. This puts the BMW i3 (94 Ah) at the top of its segment with regard to performance figures and efficiency – whether as a purely electric vehicle or equipped with Range Extender.

New equipment.
The BMW i3 (94 Ah) will be instantly recognisable in the colour Protonic Blue metallic, which is available exclusively for this model version. Up until now this was reserved for the BMW i8 hybrid sports car, but is now also available for the BMW i3. When configuring a BMW i3 (94 Ah), the customer can choose from two non-metallic paintwork colours (Capparis White and Fluid Black) and in addition to Protonic Blue, from three additional metallic paintwork colours (Mineral Grey, Platin Silver and Ionic Silver).

Four different interior designs are available for the BMW i3. Apart from the Atelier basic line: Loft, Lodge and Suite. In the future more combinations of the interior designs will be available for the BMW i3. The new elegant dark oak trim is a standard equipment in the Suite interior design. In all other interior designs the Dark Oak wood trim and the eucalyptus wood trim are available as options. The materials used are a mix of naturally treated leather, wood and wool as well as other renewable raw materials. These make the sustainable premium character of the BMW i3 both visible and tangible.

The Driving Assistant Plus equipment package is also available in the Atelier equipment line at sales start. Driving Assistant Plus consists of camera-based cruise control with Stop&Go function, traffic jam assistant, speed limit info, pedestrian and collision warning with city brake function and proactive driving assistant.

Most successful electric vehicle in its segment worldwide.
The BMW Group took on a pioneering role when it founded the BMW i brand and decided to develop an independent vehicle structure and passenger cells made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) as well as BMW eDrive technology for purely electric drive. The BMW i3, which was designed for local emissions-free urban mobility, as well as the trail-blazing BMW i8 Plug-in-Hybrid sports car both deliver sheer driving pleasure combined with sustainability-oriented premium character. Within two years after its launch in November 2013, the BMW i3 has already established itself at the top of its segment. In Germany it is the best-selling electric vehicle on the market and in Norway it is the BMW model with the most new registrations (source: Polk/IHS 2014- 3/2016). The most important single market for the purely electric five door BMW i3 is the U.S. More than 80 per cent of buyers deciding on a BMW i3 worldwide are new customers for the BMW Group. The BMW i3 and the BMW i8 received a large number of awards for innovations in the areas of light-weight construction, drive, sustainability, driving performance and design. This makes BMW i the brand to win the most awards in the world during its market launch phase.

Comfortable home charging: the new BMW i Wallboxes.
With the introduction of the BMW i3 (94 Ah) in summer 2016, BMW i will be offering a new BMW i Wallbox worldwide for comfortable and fast home garage charging or charging on a private parking space. This Wallbox has been adapted to the new charging technology and in addition to single-phase operation now also offers a charging capacity of up to 22 kW in three-phase operation.

The new Wallbox is not characterised by a flatter and more compact design compared to its predecessor, but thanks to its increased performance can now charge the battery of the BMW i3 (94 Ah) in two hours and 45 minutes. The charging process starts automatically as soon as the car and charging cable are connected. The BMW i Wallbox is operated using an LED interface.

At the end of 2016 two additional Wallboxes will be available offering additional comfort and connected functions. This permits private or fleet customers to adapt the Wallboxes precisely to the needs of their different number of vehicles. Among other things the BMW i Wallbox Plus automatically detects the connected vehicles and associates the relevant charge data using a local smartphone app. The BMW i Wallbox Connect which features WiFi as standard provides full connectivity. It offers all the functions of the BMW i Wallbox Plus and features innovative charging services which can be controlled online. Different amounts of electricity are not only recorded for different vehicles but the data can also be e-mailed instantly after completion of the charging operation and thus used for accounting purposes.

Both the BMW i Wallbox Plus as well as the BMW i Wallbox Connect can be integrated into an intelligently connected house and it are currently compatible with MyGEKKO and Loxone control systems. This allows the BMW i3 to be charged using clean electricity generated directly by the solar system on the roof of your house.

In addition, the BMW i Wallboxes help save battery electricity as they can precondition the vehicle battery when connected up. During this preconditioning process, the air conditioning in the car and the heating of the high-voltage battery can be activated via smartphone. Prewarming the battery ensures optimum battery conditions even at low outside temperatures. This ensures highest-level battery performance, range and longevity. If the preconditioning is carried out using the BMW i Wallbox, the required electricity is not taken from the car battery, but from the energy supplier’s mains system thereby not cutting down on the car’s range.

BMW i, however, not only offers a wide selection of Wallboxes, but also provides a unique installation service including onsite installation assessment at the customer’s, the supply and installation of the charging station as well as maintenance, consulting and other services.

On the go at home and abroad: comfortable charging thanks to ChargeNow.
With more that 40,000 charging points run by different operators in currently 25 countries, ChargeNow by BMW i offers the largest network of publicly accessible charging points for electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles worldwide. The ChargeNow card and the app of the same name give the customer comfortable access to all operators in the international network including cashless payment and billing. The complicated and time-consuming registration process with different providers is thus done away with completely. The driver is supported in finding and selecting one of the charging stations of the ChargeNow network by the service integrated into the navigation system as well as the related apps.

ConnectedDrive: Setting standards through Connectivity.
The optionally available Navigation System Professional provides BMW ConnectedDrive Services especially developed for BMW i. The range assistant follows the planned and currently driven route. If the destination selected in the navigation system is beyond the car’s range, the driver receives the suggestion to shift to the ECO PRO or ECO PRO+ mode. Additionally, the system calculates a more efficient alternative route. Should it be necessary to recharge at a public charging station, the driver is shown all the available stations along the planned route.

A dynamic range map is another central element of the connected navigation unit. Apart from the current charging status of the battery, the driving style, the activated electric comfort functions and the selected driving mode, the topographic features, the current traffic situation and the outside temperature are all taken into consideration. The Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) data is used for this purpose. The data is provided by the BMW ConnectedDrive Server.

The BMW i3 also sets standards when it comes connecting driver and car. The BMW i Remote App provides useful vehicle-related mobility planning data available on the customer’s smartphone, too. Apart from pedestrian navigation for finding your way to your destination from the parking space and back, BMW ConnectedDrive offers a so-called intermodal routing system for the first time in combination with the Navigation System Professional. This also incorporates public transport connections if this means you can reach your destination more quickly. From the actual trip in the BMW i3, looking for a parking space, changing on to a bus or underground line to the last stage covered on foot, the BMW i ConnectedDrive services take the customer to his destination precisely and efficiently.

As before, the comprehensive range of standard equipment of the BMW i3 (94 Ah) and the BMW i3 (60 Ah) includes: the iDrive operation system, the BMW i RemoteApp functionalities, auxiliary heating, Driving Experience switch, Radio Professional, hands-free telephone operation, air conditioning, leather steering wheel, LED daytime driving lights, Park Distance Control (PDC) with rear sensors and the charging cable for connecting to a domestic power socket.

EVORA brengt missing links in kaart om de installatie van laadinfrastructuur voor elektrische wagens te realiseren in vijf Vlaamse steden.

Elektrische wagens zijn bij uitstek geschikt voor stadsgebruik. EVORA, het Vlaams platform voor publiek toegankelijke laadpunten, werkte het voorbije jaar drie gemeenschappelijk pijlers uit waarmee vijf Vlaamse steden in samenwerking met autofabrikanten en netbeheerders de e-rijder in de toekomst lokaal willen ondersteunen. Deze drie pijlers zijn ‘Laadpaal volgt wagen’, ‘Ladder van laden’ en ‘Uniformiteit in laadpunten’. Dit werd toegelicht op het slotevent in Antwerpen, waar de EVORA-partners en Viceminister-President Annemie Turtelboom hun visie op de toekomst van de laadinfrastructuur voor elektrische voertuigen voorstelden.

Jean-Philippe Parain, CEO en President BMW Group Belux verklaart de deelname van het Duitse premiummerk: “BMW staat met zijn ‘BMW i’ afdeling voor visionaire elektrische premiumwagens en mobiliteitsdiensten. Het EVORA platform werd in 2014 opgericht als initiatief van de automerken Audi, BMW, Nissan, Renault en Volkswagen, de steden Antwerpen, Hasselt, Leuven, Mechelen en Sint-Truiden, de netbeheerders Eandis en Infrax, Blue Mobility/Olympus Mobility en The New Drive. Naast deze initiatiefnemers zijn er nog verschillende partijen die een rol hebben in het aanbod van publiek toegankelijke laadpalen, bijvoorbeeld de energieleveranciers, laadpaalleveranciers, … Binnen het EVORA platform werd de kennis en expertise van al deze partijen gebundeld om samen een antwoord te bieden op de vraag hoe men in de steden zijn of haar auto kan opladen wanneer men niet over een eigen parkeerplaats beschikt. Twee jaar na de lancering behoort de BMW i3 wereldwijd tot de top van het segment. In België vertegenwoordigt de verkoop van de BMW i3 48% van alle verkochte elektrische stadsvoertuigen. München. Krachtig, wendbaar, geconnecteerd en vooral zonder uitstoot: Dankzij deze troeven doet de BMW i3 nu ook dienst als interventievoertuig voor reddingsdiensten en politie- en brandweerkorpsen. BMW biedt als eerste een volledig elektrisch voertuig met elektrische mobiliteit als doel en uitgerust met een uitgebreid gamma aan opties die speciaal ontworpen werden voor interventieteams. Hiermee opent BMW deuren voor de toepassingsmogelijkheden van elektrische mobiliteit in een stedelijke omgeving. Beieren, Milaan, Los Angeles en Londen voegden de i3 reeds toe aan hun interventievloot. Bovendien nam het bestuur van de Poolse hoofdstad Warschau in het kader van emissievrij transport een speciale versie van de i3 in dienst.

 The BMW i3 features a vehicle architecture that was specifically developed for electric and plug-in models. The key elements are the carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cabin and an aluminium chassis comprising all drive and suspension components. This construction method helps to provide the four-metre-long, five-door car not only with a remarkably spacious and variable interior, but also a small turning circle as well as agile and safe handling characteristics. A high seating position and excellent all-round visibility offer the ideal prerequisites for use in urban traffic conditions. The 125 kW/170 hp electric motor accelerates the standard BMW i3 (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 12.9 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km) from 0-100 km/h in just 7.2 seconds. The car’s lithium-ion high voltage battery permits a vehicle range of up to 160 kilometres in day-to-day operation.

The specific equipment featured in the BMW i3 is the result of more than 50 years of experience in the field of emergency vehicle development. Thus BMW is the only car manufacturer that is able to offer police, rescue and fire service task forces a range of equipment ex works that is exclusively aligned to each individual requirement. Depending on the area of use, the vehicles are provided with the corresponding design foils and roof bars. A special signalling system, front and rear flashers as well as pressure-chamber loudspeakers ensure that other road users are warned in good time when the BMW i3 is on an emergency assignment. The range of equipment also includes a preliminary setup for digital radio.

Moreover, thanks to a permanently installed SIM card, it is possible to make use of intelligent networking technology inside the BMW i3 to make work easier for emergency personnel. The ConnectedRescue system, which is based on BMW Connected Drive, offers the optional possibility of transmitting from the control centre to the vehicle all important information – including address, reason for assignment and contact person – clearly and intuitively operable and readable. The transmitted target coordinates or addresses can directly serve the navigation system’s route guidance, meaning that manual input of the navigation destination is no longer required. In this way, transmission errors are eliminated. The driver can concentrate fully on the traffic whilst the team prepares directly for the assignment. This enhances both safety and efficiency of rescue forces.

The BMW i3 is also conquering unusual business areas. The latest example is the Polish Idea Bank, which uses the BMW i3 in Warsaw for a pick-up service that is uncommon in the banking business. Shop owners are able to request via an app the BMW i3 in use as a security car to pay in their daily takings conveniently, directly and in front of their own shop door.

Het delen van elektrische wagens is een belangrijke steunpaal van de inspanningen van BMW Group om een duurzaam model voor stedelijke mobiliteit te helpen creëren, het verkeersvolume te doen dalen en de levenskwaliteit in steden te verbeteren. München. Met de titel Green Car of the Year Award 2015 heeft de BMW i3 opnieuw een trofee toegevoegd aan de indrukwekkende reeks van onderscheidingen in zijn eerste jaar op de markt. De wagen verkreeg deze prijs, utigereikt door Green Car Journal op de Auto Show in Los Angeles, als eerste, volledig elektrisch voertuig uit het premium segment. BMW Group start met een pilootproject in België. Het bedrijf lanceert een online winkel in België, zodat klanten een BMW i3 kunnen kopen via internet. De burgemeester van Knokke-Heist, Léopold Lippens, heeft op 2 juni een BMW i3 in ontvangst genomen. Op die manier wordt Knokke-Heist de eerste Belgische stad die beschikt over deze nieuwe BMW die volledig is ontwikkeld voor elektrische mobiliteit. Ter gelegenheid van de opendeurdag van het Hoger Technisch Instituut Sint-Antonius Gent (HTISA), stelt BMW Belux twee BMW i3’s ter beschikking van de leerlingen en de bezoekers. De leerlingen van de technische school hebben een opleiding gekregen vanuit het nieuwe BMW Belux Training Centre in Bornem. Zij zullen op hun beurt deze revolutionaire stadswagen voorstellen aan de bezoekers van de opendeurdag van de Gentse school op 23 mei. De jonge leerlingen, gepassioneerd door technologie, de autosector en duurzame mobiliteit, beschikken over niet minder dan twee BMW i3’s die op het HTISA worden tentoongesteld. De BMW i3 wint de prijs voor meest propere stadswagen 2014 die reeds voor het vierde jaar georganiseerd werd op het circuit van Zolder in het kader van de « Clean Week ». In bijlage vindt u het Nederlandstalige persbericht.

De BMW i3 verkreeg de hoogste score van 5 sterren wat betreft de bescherming van inzittenden en van kinderen in de Euro NCAP crash test, die werd uitgevoerd naar aanleiding van de marktintroductie. Op het vlak van passieve veiligheid bevindt de wagen zich zoals verwacht op het niveau van de beste conventionele wagens van het segment. Het integrale veiligheidsconcept reikt van het vermijden van ongevallen tot de intelligente Emergency Call en voldoet aan vereisten die deze van de Euro NCAP overstijgen. Met het begin van de serieproductie van de BMW i3 treedt de BMW Group vandaag binnen in een nieuw tijdperk voor de productie van wagens. De eerste elektrische premiumwagen die van bij het begin werd ontwikkeld voor een elektrische aandrijving, is het resultaat van een al omvattend ontwikkelingsproces met als doel het reduceren van verbruik en uitstoot in de stedelijke omgeving.
