Munich. Comfortably rest your hands in your lap and initiate overtaking maneuvers with a glance in the wing mirror – BMW customers will soon be able to experience this in many more European countries with the Highway Assistant*. The BMW Group is the first car manufacturer in Germany to receive approval for driver assistance systems for the new BMW iX3 in accordance with UN Regulation No. 171 for Driver Control Assistance Systems (DCAS). The DCAS regulation provides an international legal framework for innovative Level 2 driver assistance systems with a focus on customer safety. The approval enables the BMW Group to offer the Highway Assistant* with Level 2 "hands-off" function in numerous other models and countries in the future, as well as with an extended range of functions. Further innovative assistance functions will also follow for urban driving scenarios. The current generation of the Highway Assistant has just been awarded the Tech Award in the "Comfort assistance systems" category by the German car magazine "auto motor und sport".

When the Highway Assistant is activated, drivers can take their hands off the steering wheel permanently at speeds of up to 130 km/h, but must remain attentive and ready to intervene. The system assists with vehicle guidance within its own lane and can also change lanes automatically if necessary - all the driver needs to do is confirm this with a glance. The new DCAS approval also enables even more extensive functions. With active BMW Maps route guidance, the system suggests a lane change in good time at Motorway junctions and exits, which can be confirmed with a glance in the wing mirror. The Highway Assistant remains active when driving through freeway junctions and until the end of freeway exits. This means that drivers of the BMW iX3 can enjoy Level 2 driver assistance in even more situations without touching the steering wheel.

The Highway Assistant of the previous technology generation celebrated its premiere in the current 5 Series Sedan in 2023. The BMW Group had received a limited exemption from the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Germany for the approval of the system. With DCAS approval, exemptions are no longer required, and the systems can be offered throughout Europe and in other ECE countries.

BMW Symbiotic Drive: next-generation symbiotic driver assistance.

In addition to the new possibilities offered by the DCAS regulation for driver assistance systems, the BMW Group continues to consistently design its systems so that driver and driver assistance work together symbiotically. BMW Symbiotic Drive creates a seamless transition between assistance and driver input and reaches the next level of development in the “Neue Klasse” vehicles. In addition to symbiotic steering, the BMW iX3 is the world's first model with symbiotic brakes. With active driver assistance, the driver can influence the system individually at any time according to their wishes by lightly intervening in steering and braking without switching off the driver assistance. The system remains active to provide support. München/Las Vegas. De BMW Group presenteert de rij- en gebruikerservaring van de toekomst op de Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025 in Las Vegas. Tijdens de beurs biedt BMW voor het eerst de mogelijkheid om de nagenoeg productierijpe nieuwe BMW iDrive te ervaren, compleet met BMW Panoramic Vision als middelpunt. De software die aan de basis ligt van dit alles is het nieuwe BMW Operating System X, dat fungeert als de intelligentiehub achter het nieuwe weergave- en bedieningsconcept. Het holistische systeem met zijn moderne, stijlbepalende design wordt vanaf eind 2025 in alle nieuwe BMW modellen geïntroduceerd.

“Toptechnologie en een uiterst intuïtieve bediening gaan hand in hand – de nieuwe BMW Panoramic iDrive verenigt een kwarteeuw pionierswerk en technologisch leiderschap in bedieningsconcepten”, zegt Frank Weber, lid van de Raad van Bestuur van BMW AG, verantwoordelijk voor Ontwikkeling.

“De basis wordt geleverd door het nieuwe BMW Operating System X. Vier onderdelen, één doel: consistente focus op de bestuurder in kenmerkende BMW stijl.

De nieuwe BMW iDrive verenigt vier centrale elementen in een uniek weergave- en bedieningsconcept.

• BMW Panoramic Vision, een nieuw ontworpen concept voor het Head-Up Display, dat BMW ontwikkelde om content te projecteren, reflecteert zichtbare informatie op een zwart geprint oppervlak in het onderste deel van de voorruit. Deze informatie is zichtbaar voor alle inzittenden.
  Het systeem projecteert de belangrijkste rijgegevens rechtstreeks in het gezichtsveld van de bestuurder, in het linkerdeel van het BMW Panoramic Vision-display (in wagens met het stuur links), boven het stuur. De bestuurder kan de inhoud van de centrale en rechtse delen van het BMW Panoramic Vision-display personaliseren via het centrale scherm. De integratie van BMW Panoramic Vision creëert een 3D-effect voor bestuurder en passagiers.
• Boven het BMW Panoramic Vision-display toont het nieuwe en optionele BMW 3D Head-Up Display geïntegreerde navigatie en geautomatiseerde rijgegevens rechtstreeks in het gezichtsveld van de bestuurder. De inhoud van BMW Panoramic Vision en het BMW 3D Head-Up Display wordt netjes op elkaar afgestemd.
  Het innovatieniveau van de twee Head-Up Display-technologieën wordt onderstreept door verscheidene patentaanvragen van de BMW Group, die voortvloeien uit de ontwikkeling van deze projectietechnologieën.
• Op het centrale scherm met matrix-achtergrondverlichting zorgt de vertrouwde, bijgewerkte menustructuur met QuickSelect voor een optimale bediening van de functies en inhoud door aanraking. Het geheel laat zich erg eenvoudig en vlot bedienen, omdat het display met vrij uitgesneden ontwerp zich in een ergonomisch ideale positie dicht bij het stuur bevindt. Geselecteerde inhoud (widgets) kan met een veegbeweging op het centrale scherm naar het BMW Panoramic Vision-display worden verplaatst. Er zijn maar liefst zes widgets, die naar wens kunnen worden gerangschikt op het BMW Panoramic Vision-display.
• Het nieuwe multifunctionele stuur maakt gebruik van de Shy-Tech-benadering van BMW, waarbij de relevante knoppen oplichten om de beschikbare functies te benadrukken. Het stuur dient als primaire fysieke bediening en de knoppen geven actieve gevoelsmatige feedback. Ze hebben een doordacht, reliëfachtig oppervlak, waardoor ze gemakkelijk te vinden zijn en de bestuurder ze kan indrukken zonder zijn blik van de weg af te wenden.
  De plaatsing van de knoppen volgt het bekende principe waarbij de rijhulpfuncties aan de linkerkant van het stuur zitten en de inhoudsbedieningsfuncties aan de rechterkant.

De combinatie van deze vier elementen herinterpreteert de gebruikelijke BMW benadering van ‘handen aan het stuur, ogen op de weg’, waarmee het merk normen vestigt op het vlak van bestuurdergerichtheid en een unieke vorm van intuïtieve, gebruiksvriendelijke en ergonomisch geoptimaliseerde bediening presenteert. BMW Panoramic iDrive bezorgt de bestuurder altijd de juiste informatie op de juiste plaats en op het juiste moment. Het systeem blijft gebruikmaken van een optimale combinatie van analoge en digitale bedieningselementen door schakelaars, knoppen, aanraakbediening en spraakbediening te combineren. Er zijn haptische schakelaars voor de ruitenwissers, richtingaanwijzers, buitenspiegels, volumeregeling, versnellingskeuzeschakelaars en ruitontdooiing. Andere functies zijn dan weer geoptimaliseerd voor aanraak- of spraakbediening of voor bediening via het multifunctionele stuur, zoals de telefoonfuncties, mediabedieningssystemen, navigatie, rijhulp, personalisering van schermen, selectie van MyModes en nog veel meer.

Naast de op data gebaseerde inzichten over het gebruik van BMW Operating Systems in het wereldwijde wagenpark van nu al meer dan 22 miljoen verbonden BMW’s omvatte de ontwikkelingsfase van de nieuwe BMW Panoramic iDrive ook talrijke onderzoeken in de gebruikerslabs van de BMW Group, waarbij ongeveer 3.000 klanten betrokken waren. Elke beslissing over de diverse aspecten van de besturingslogica is dan ook gebaseerd op gegevens en op een gestructureerde manier bepaald. Ook hier is de uitgebreide ruimte voor personalisering van de gebruikerservaring afgestemd op de voorkeuren en eisen van de klant.

BMW Operating System X: slim, veelzijdig, klaar voor de toekomst.
Het nieuwe BMW Operating System X is een update van het nieuwste besturingssysteem dat in veel BMW modellen wordt gebruikt, en werd volledig intern ontwikkeld door BMW. Net als het BMW Operating System 9 steunt het op een AOSP-softwarestack (Android Open Source Project). Het biedt nog meer mogelijkheden voor upgrades dan het vorige systeem, waardoor het enerzijds geschikt is voor de toekomst en anderzijds compatibel is met oudere softwareversies. Het biedt ook de mogelijkheid om extra functies te integreren, waardoor wagens met de nieuwe BMW Panoramic iDrive gedurende een lange periode technologisch toonaangevend zullen blijven.

“Het totaalconcept van de nieuwe BMW Panoramic iDrive met Operating System X is mogelijk gemaakt door een grote technologische sprong voorwaarts”, zegt Stephan Durach Senior Vice President Connected Company BMW Group. “Het verenigt een intuïtieve bediening, emotioneel aantrekkelijke ervaringen en specifieke personaliseringsmogelijkheden. De nieuwe BMW iDrive met Operating System X demonstreert het potentieel van een ‘software-defined vehicle’.”

De doorgedreven intelligentie van het BMW Operating System X maakt het mogelijk om BMW Panoramic Vision, het optionele BMW 3D Head-Up Display, het centrale display en het multifunctionele stuur zodanig met elkaar te laten samenwerken dat fysieke en digitale ervaringen samensmelten. Zo verschijnt er bij een inkomend gesprek eerst een afbeelding op het BMW Panoramic Vision-display. Tegelijkertijd licht een eerder verborgen symbool op de relevante stuurknop groen op om aan te geven dat de oproep kan worden aangenomen door op de knop te drukken of dat de oproep kan worden geweigerd door over de rechterkant van het stuur te vegen.
Wanneer een navigatiebestemming via aanraak- of spraakbediening wordt ingevoerd, verschijnen er waarschuwingen voor de routegeleiding op het BMW 3D Head-Up Display en meer informatie over wegen en kruispunten op het BMW Panoramic Vision-display. Voor oriëntatie op grotere schaal kan op elk moment een overzicht van de hele kaart worden weergegeven op het centrale display.

De personalisering van content bereikt een ongekend niveau met het BMW Operating System X. De displays in Panoramic Vision kunnen worden aangepast aan de persoonlijke voorkeuren. Daarnaast hebben bestuurders nu ook de optie om hun eigen instellingen te kiezen voor rijeigenschappen zoals respons en stuureigenschappen in de My Mode ‘Personal’. Bovendien kan de gebruiker foto’s uploaden als achtergrond voor het centrale display en kan hij de kleur van de sfeerverlichting en het design van de gebruikersinterface aanpassen aan zijn voorkeuren, voor een nog persoonlijkere rijervaring.

De BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant reageert zoals gebruikelijk op het commando ‘Hey BMW’ of kan worden opgeroepen door op de betreffende toets op het multifunctionele stuur te drukken. De mogelijkheden van de BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant worden voortdurend uitgebreid en zullen voor de Neue Klasse naar een geheel nieuw niveau worden getild door de integratie van Large Language Models (LLM). Het gebruik van deze technologie is in eerste instantie gericht op navigatie, waardoor de klant uitgebreidere gesproken commando’s kan geven met behulp van natuurlijke taal, bijvoorbeeld: “Breng me naar een laadstation dat dicht bij een voedingswinkel ligt.” Op de stand van technologiepartner Amazon op CES 2025 krijgen bezoekers een eerste indruk van deze mogelijkheden aan de hand van een bètaversie van deze versie van de BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant in een BMW X3. 

Net als de huidige infotainmentsystemen van BMW kan de BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant – als de bestuurder dat wil – proactief suggesties doen op basis van gebruikersgedrag. Deze intelligentie wordt verder uitgebreid met het BMW Operating System X. In relevante situaties wijst de BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant op rijhulpsystemen die de bestuurder zelden gebruikt. Als een soort geheugensteuntje stelt het systeem voor om de Sport Mode te activeren op geschikte routes als de bestuurder de Sport Mode eerder al zelfstandig heeft geactiveerd. Als de bestuurder deze proactieve suggesties meermaals negeert of er niet op reageert, leert het systeem hiervan en geeft het na een tijd geen suggesties meer. 

Het BMW Operating System X neemt de integratiemogelijkheden voor apps van derden over van de vorige infotainmentgeneratie. Op dit moment biedt de BMW ConnectedDrive Store wereldwijd meer dan zestig apps voor het BMW Operating System 9. Dat aanbod zal blijven groeien, bijvoorbeeld met productiviteitsapps zoals de videoconferentiedienst Zoom.

Design en technologie voor een unieke gebruiks- en rijervaring.
De nieuwe BMW Panoramic iDrive is schaalbaar en wordt vanaf eind 2025 geïntegreerd in alle nieuwe BMW modellen, ongeacht hun voertuigsegment en aandrijftechnologie.

De rijervaring staat centraal. De bestuurder moet zich op zijn gemak voelen en moet de volledige controle over de wagen hebben. Dat principe komt tot uiting in het design van de nieuwe BMW Panoramic iDrive. Er wordt bijzondere aandacht besteed aan de details: de gebruikersinterface werd zo intuïtief en adaptief mogelijk ontworpen om een naadloze interactie te garanderen. Dat resulteert in een holistische ervaring die wordt versterkt door een harmonieuze combinatie van geluid, licht en innovatief design. Elke reis wordt een uniek moment van verbinding tussen mens en wagen.

“Technologie en klantvoorkeuren veranderen sneller dan ooit. Het ontwerp van digitale ervaringen en geluid speelt een steeds belangrijkere rol”, zegt Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “De nieuwe BMW Panoramic iDrive maakt onze wagens niet alleen slimmer en gebruiksvriendelijker, maar maakt ook een veel uitgebreidere personalisering mogelijk, waardoor elke nieuwe BMW een wagen wordt die helemaal van de gebruiker is.”

Een ander aspect in de holistische ervaring van de BMW Panoramic iDrive is de nieuwe HypersonX-geluidservaring in de Neue Klasse-modellen. Die werd ontwikkeld door de BMW Group Sound Design Studio en omvat 43 geluidssignalen en speciale rijgeluiden voor de Personal Mode en Sport Mode. Het multidimensionale spectrum past de geluiden precies aan de rijsituatie aan en creëert zo een emotionele interactie tussen de bestuurder en zijn BMW.

+++ BMW Remote Software Upgrades voor 's werelds grootste wagenpark met over-the-air update mogelijkheid +++

Munich. The number of BMW Remote Software Upgrades successfully installed by the BMW Group passed the 10 million mark at the end of September. These upgrades are transmitted over the air to the vehicles and then launched by the customer.

“Today, BMW is able to deliver over-the-air updates to more than nine million vehicles worldwide. And we can update the entire vehicle software in this way,” states Christoph Grote, Senior Vice President Electronics and Software BMW Group. “This capability clearly demonstrates our expertise in the field of software-defined vehicles. The fact that ten million Remote Software Upgrades have now been carried out in vehicles underlines how popular this form of innovation is with our customers.”

BMW sent out its first over-the-air upgrade five years ago. This functionality has since been extended to all brands, model series and drive types. The arrival of the new Operating System 9 means that MINI models can also be updated remotely, as can the Rolls-Royce Spectre. “The Remote Software Upgrade facility allows us to keep improving our vehicles without the need for a workshop visit,” Grote continues. “This brings greater comfort and safety for our customers and also offers them new features and functional improvements from time to time.”

Indeed, the BMW Remote Software Upgrade technology has enabled numerous new functions and functional improvements to be rolled out to customer vehicles. In addition to comfort and safety features, the updates have also benefited infotainment, driving, drive system and driver assistance capability. A recent customer study confirmed the importance of regular updates for product enhancement.

The BMW Group is set to build on its leading position in this area over the coming weeks and months with a series of further upgrades including attractive model-specific features such as a Silent Mode¹⁾ and a new Curve Ahead View²⁾ in the Head-Up Display for ‘seeing around bends’ virtually.

Munich. BMW is the first carmaker in the world to receive approval for a combination of a Level 2 driving assistance system (the BMW Highway Assistant) and a Level 3 system in the form of the BMW Personal Pilot L3 in the same vehicle. The new BMW 7 Series therefore sets a milestone in the field of automated driving by offering a unique opportunity to enjoy the benefits of both systems in the same car.

BMW Highway Assistant (Level 2): greater comfort on long journeys.
This advanced Level 2 feature enhances comfort significantly on long-distance journeys especially thanks to its ability to operate at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph). The BMW Highway Assistant is an additional function of the Steering and Lane Control Assistant that can be used on motorways with structurally separated carriageways. On such stretches of road, the driver is able to take their hands off the steering wheel for longer periods and position them comfortably, provided they continue to pay attention to what is happening on the road and are able to take over the steering again at any time.

While driving in partially automated mode, the BMW 7 Series Sedan is also able to make lane changes without the driver having to take hold of the steering wheel again. This is made possible by the Active Lane Change Assistant, which performs the necessary steering movements for the overtaking manoeuvre and adjusts the vehicle’s speed as required as soon as the traffic situation permits. Plus, the driver is able to initiate a lane change suggested by this system by simply looking in the exterior mirror to confirm it.

BMW Personal Pilot (Level 3): allowing other in-car activities in traffic jams.
Highly automated Level 3 driving means drivers can take their hands off the steering wheel and temporarily turn their attention away from the road. The BMW Personal Pilot L3 feature in the 7 Series offers a whole new driving experience by enabling drivers to fully delegate the task of driving to their car under certain conditions at speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph) and look away from the road. Highly automated systems are capable of completely taking over the driving in specific situations, e.g. in traffic jams on the motorway. This even lets drivers carry out other in-car activities, such as making phone calls, reading, writing messages, working or streaming videos. However, the driver must always be prepared to reassume control within a few seconds when prompted by the car, for example when there are roadworks.

The combination of all these driving assistance systems within a single vehicle represents a significant advance and offers a comprehensive set of functionalities for a more comfortable, more relaxing drive over both long and short journeys. “We are setting new standards in the automotive industry by combining both technologies in the new BMW 7 Series,” says Dr. Mihiar Ayoubi, Senior Vice President Driving Experience BMW Group. “In the process, we are underlining our commitment to offering our customers a safe, comfortable and innovative driving experience.”

The BMW Highway Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional are both part of the optional BMW Personal Pilot L3, which is available exclusively in Germany priced at € 6,000 (incl. VAT). Drivers of cars equipped with the optional BMW Personal Pilot L3 that have already been delivered will be able to add the BMW Highway Assistant to its range of functions free of charge from 08/24.

Munich. Increased efficiency through consistent electrification, optimised emissions and innovations in the areas of driver assistance and digital services are the focus of the model revision measures for numerous BMW model series that will take effect in autumn 2020. From November 2020, all models of the premium brand will meet the requirements of the currently strictest exhaust emission standard Euro 6d. In the BMW 5 Series, the range of plug-in hybrid models has been extended by three new variants. New inline 6-cylinder diesel engines and 48-volt mild hybrid technology lower fuel consumption and emissions of selected models in the BMW 3 Series and BMW 8 Series. In addition, further engines will supplement the drive portfolio of the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé.

The expanded range of the following electrified models is especially attractive: BMW 545e xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 2.3 – 2.2 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.3 – 15.8 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 53 – 49 g/km; electric range: 47 – 57 km), BMW 530e Touring (combined fuel consumption: 2.0 – 1.8 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.1 – 15.4 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 46 – 42 g/km; electric range: 52 – 57 km (WLTP)) and BMW 530e xDrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 2.4 – 2.2 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.7 – 16.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 54 – 50 g/km; electric range: 48 – 53 km (WLTP)). The BMW 5 Series model range now already includes five plug-in hybrid variants. In the upper mid-size class, BMW offers the largest selection of models with electrified drive.

In the new BMW 545e xDrive Sedan, an inline 6-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission deliver impressive driving dynamics in a particularly efficient manner. The power of the two drive units adds up to a maximum system output of 290 kW/394 hp and is distributed between the front and rear wheels as required by the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive. The brand’s hallmark combination of energy efficiency and sportiness also characterises the new Touring models, whose plug-in hybrid system consists of a 4-cylinder petrol engine and an electric drive system also integrated into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission. Together they generate a system output of up to 215 kW/292 hp in the XtraBoost mode when load requirements are particularly high.

Increased dynamic performance and reduced fuel consumption: New inline 6-cylinder diesel engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology in the BMW 3 Series and BMW 8 Series.
With the introduction of 48-volt mild hybrid technology in additional models, BMW continues to consistently reduce fuel consumption and emissions in its current vehicle fleet. This is linked to the introduction of a new generation of inline 6-cylinder diesel engines. As of autumn 2020, four mid-size models of the BMW 3 Series and three luxury sports cars of the BMW 8 Series will offer noticeably more dynamic performance and increased efficiency.

This twofold and BMW typical progress is achieved through further advanced BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and additionally with the aid of a particularly powerful starter generator and an additional battery. The dynamic power delivery when starting off and accelerating is enhanced by the additional power of 8 kW/11 hp spontaneously provided by the 48-volt starter generator. In other load ranges the electric drive can relieve the combustion engine and thus increase its efficiency. The power required for this is generated by intensive recuperation in braking and thrust phases and stored in a 48-volt battery, which also supplies the vehicle’s electrical system.

The 48-volt mild hybrid technology will be used in four further BMW 3 Series models from November 2020. In the new BMW 330d Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 4.7 – 4.4 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 125 – 116 g/km*) and the new BMW 330d Xdrive Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 5.0 – 4.7 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 132 – 123 g/km*) and the new BMW 330d Touring (combined fuel consumption: 4.8 – 4.5 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 128 – 119 g/km*) and the new BMW 330d Xdrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 5.2 – 4.8 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 136 – 127 g/km), it supports the new inline 6-cylinder diesel engine, which already provides additional driving pleasure with its maximum output increased by 15 kW/21 hp to 210 kW/286 hp. Thanks to a two-stage turbocharging system and an advanced common rail injection system whose piezo injectors now inject the fuel with up to ten injections per working cycle and a maximum pressure of 2 700 bar into the combustion chambers, engine response and efficiency of the 3.0 litre engine are optimised. The new diesel engine generates its maximum torque, which has been increased by 30 to 650 Nm, between 1 500 and 2 500 rpm. The increased power of the combustion engine and the additional electrical power noticeably improve the car’s sprint capacity. For example, the new BMW 330d Sedan improves its acceleration from zero to 100 km/h by 0.2 seconds to now 5.3 seconds.

In the BMW 8 Series, 48-volt mild hybrid technology is combined with an equally new and even more powerful 3.0-litre diesel engine. The BMW 840d xDrive Coupé models (fuel consumption combined: 5.8 – 5.6 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 154 - 146 g/km), BMW 840d xDrive Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 6.0 – 5.7 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 159 – 151 g/km) and BMW 840d xDrive Gran Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 5.9 – 5.6 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 155 - 148 g/km) will be powered by a 250 kW/340 hp inline 6-cylinder engine in the future. The 15 kW/20 hp increase in top-level output also results from further advanced BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. It now includes a multi-stage turbocharger with variable turbine geometry for the high-pressure and low-pressure stages. The maximum torque of 700 Nm is generated alreadybetween 1 750 and 2 250 rpm. In the luxury sports car model range, the new drive technology enables the BMW 840d xDrive Coupé, for example, to improve its acceleration figure from a standing start to 100 km/h by 0.1 seconds to 4.8 seconds. The optimised performance characteristics of the diesel engine are accompanied by precisely adapted fine tuning of the chassis and its control systems.

The new diesel engines for the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 8 Series also represent the latest state of the art with regard to emissions. They feature exhaust gas treatment technology, whose engine-proximate components consist of a diesel oxidation catalytic converter and an SCR coating on the diesel particulate filter. In order to optimally reduce nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions, a second metering unit is additionally integrated at the outlet of the engine-proximate SCR system.

BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé: Additional engines and new optional extras.
New engines will be available from November 2020 for the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé. The new BMW 116i (combined fuel consumption: 5.8 – 5.4 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 133 – 124 g/km) is powered by a 3-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 80 kW/109 hp and a maximum torque of 190 Nm. It is equipped as standard with a manual 6-speed transmission and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 10.6 seconds. A 7-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch is optionally available. In addition, the model range will be expanded to include the new BMW 120i (fuel consumption combined: 5.8 – 5.5 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 134 – 126 g/km). Its 4-cylinder petrol engine generates a maximum output of 131 kW/178 hp and a maximum torque of 280 Nm and is combined as standard with a 7-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch. The new BMW 120i accelerates from a standing start to 100 km/h in 7.0 seconds.

Outstanding economy is the hallmark of the new entry-level diesel engine for the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé. The 3-cylinder diesel engine of the new BMW 216d Gran Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 4.1 – 3.8 l/100 km*; combined CO₂ emissions: 108 – 99 g/km) provides a maximum output of 85 kW/116 hp and a maximum torque of 270 Nm. It transmits its power to a 7-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch as standard and enables acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds.

The range of optional equipment for the BMW 1 Series and the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé is supplemented by the BMW Individual Shadow Line lights. With the black inserts at the upper edge of the headlamps they make the front view even more powerfully expressive.

Urban Cruise Control: Increased comfort and optimised safety when driving in urban traffic.
The increased level of comfort and safety achieved through combined speed and distance control will also be available in numerous current BMW models when driving in city traffic from autumn 2020 onwards. In conjunction with the optional Driving Assistant Professional, the Urban Cruise Control function is available in the BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series, the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo, the BMW 8 Series and the BMW X5, BMW X6, BMW X7, BMW M5, BMW M8, BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M model series. It extends the range of functions of the Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function by a traffic light recognition function. In addition to vehicles and traffic signs ahead, traffic lights registered by the stereo camera are also taken into account.

In the case of traffic light signals that are clearly related to the lane you are travelling, these are automatically registered by the speed and distance control system. If the traffic light is red, the system decelerates the vehicle to a standstill. A green light signals the continuation of the journey. In a more complex intersection situation where, for example, different light signals apply to different lanes, a traffic light symbol is displayed in the instrument cluster. The driver can then confirm the light signal shown there and continue to use the automatic speed and distance control or control the speed himself. For additional comfort in city traffic there is a drive reminder function. While stationary at a traffic light, the current traffic light phase is displayed in the instrument cluster; at the beginning of the green phase, the driver also receives a signal to start driving.

The Urban Cruise Control function can also be integrated into the car at a later date by means of a Remote Software Upgrade. With the exception of the BMW 8 Series models, this option is available for vehicles of all the above-mentioned series produced from July 2020 onwards and which are equipped with the Driving Assistant Professional.

New digital services for more driving pleasure: BMW News, BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with new functions, personal profile picture and simple log-in.
The latest generation of the display and control system makes it possible to use new digital services in numerous current BMW models. The BMW Operating System 7, which is available in conjunction with BMW Live Cockpit, BMW Live Cockpit Plus or BMW Live Cockpit Professional, allows the driver to customise what is displayed to a very high degree. From November 2020, audio content will also be tailored to the driver’s wishes and needs with BMW News. Based on the driver’s individual interests, current online news is selected from publisher offerings and broadcast in the form of naturally spoken language via the vehicle's audio system.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is one of the particularly innovative services that features in current models with BMW Operating System 7. The digital companion, which enables intuitive operation of numerous vehicle functions via voice control (“Hey, BMW”), is constantly gaining new capabilities. From autumn 2020, the operating modes MAX eDrive and AUTO eDrive or ELECTRIC and HYBRID can also be activated in the appropriately equipped plug-in hybrid models by means of a naturally spoken instruction.

Optimised options for creating a driver profile allow further customisation opportunities. From November 2020, the driver can no longer only login by entering the BMW ID manually, but also via the My BMW App as well, making the process very convenient. A QR code generated for this purpose can be displayed on the Control Display, which can be scanned using a smartphone. The personal driver profile data can then be transferred to the vehicle. Also new: The driver can add a photo of his choice to his individual profile.

BMW X1 and BMW X2: New headlamp variants and BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line with extended features.
Adaptive LED headlights will be available for the compact BMW X2 Sports Activity Coupé from November 2020. They optimise visibility when driving at night, among other things by means of a high beam matrix function. This feature is able to increase the range of vision while at the same time avoiding any dazzle effect on other road users. To achieve this, the high beam is divided into several LED segments that can be activated and deactivated independently of each other to adapt how the road is illuminated to the respective traffic situation.

In addition, the striking BMW Individual Shadow Line lights are available as a new option for the BMW X2 and the BMW X1. The sporty appearance of the BMW X2 can be further enhanced by the BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line with extended features. In addition to the high-gloss black side window surrounds, this option includes a black frame for the BMW kidney grille and tailpipe trims in chrome black.

New paint finishes allow for expressive individualisation.
New additions to the range of paint finishes for numerous models will be introduced in autumn 2020 allowing for even greater levels of individualisation. The new San Remo Green metallic paint finish will also be available for the new BMW 4 Series Coupé in future. For the BMW X5, BMW X6 and BMW X7, the colours Dravit Grey metallic and Sparkling Brown metallic have been added to the range. In addition, the BMW Individual special paintwork finishes Grigio Telesto metallic, Urban Green metallic, Frozen Black metallic, Petrol Mica metallic, Ruby Red metallic, Avus Blue metallic and British Racing Green metallic are also available for the large BMW X models. 

For the BMW i3 (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) and BMW i3s (combined fuel consumption: 0.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 14.6 – 14.0 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 0 g/km) new paint finishes will also be available from November 2020. The purely electrically driven models will be available with paint finishes in Cashmere Silver with accents in BMW i Blue and Galvanic Gold with accents in Frozen Grey metallic and Fluid Black with accents in Frozen Grey metallic.

Munich. The BMW Group has once again selected expert software development partners, further consolidating its partner network in the process. The aim of the collaboration with KPIT and TTTech is to press ahead with the scalable Autonomous Driving Platform and to work together on the development of Level 3 and Level 4/5 functions (Highway Pilot and Urban Pilot). This move bolsters the BMW Group’s development resources for automated driving and represents another step forward in its quest to expand the platform’s ecosystem and establish the technology in the automotive industry.

KPIT and TTTech will be well positioned to help roll out the software stack within the Autonomous Driving Platform to third parties. This will make it easier to integrate other OEMs and begin offering scalable software solutions across the industry.

Alle motoren zijn voorzien van de modernste uitlaatgasbehandelingstechnologie inclusief een benzinepartikelfilter of een SCR-katalysator en voldoen aan de laatste, striktste emissienorm EU6d-TEMP. De 8-traps Steptronic automaat is in alle versies standaard.
  • BMW xDrive intelligente vierwielaandrijving is eveneens standaard, met nieuwe, efficiëntere besturingstechniek en met nadruk op aandrijving op de achterwielen. Een sperdifferentieel dat de aandrijfkrachten ongelijk verdeelt over de achteras zorgt voor extra wendbaarheid, tractie en stabiliteit bij accelereren uit bochten en in andere dynamische situaties.

  • BMW Display Key toont voertuiginformatie en stelt gebruiker in staat om voertuigfuncties te gebruiken. Draadloos smartphone opladen.

  Brandstof- en stroomverbruik, CO2-emissie en actieradius zijn bepaald volgens de Europese Richtlijn (EC) 715/2007 in de van toepassing zijnde versie. De cijfers zijn die van een standaarduitvoering zoals die in Duitsland leverbaar is. Bij de actieradius is rekening gehouden met de uiteenlopende wiel- en bandenmaten en meeruitvoering en daardoor kan die bij het samenstellen van een specifieke auto afwijken.

   

  De met een * gemarkeerde cijfers zijn al gebaseerd op de nieuwe WLTP-testprocedure en zijn teruggerekend tot equivalente NEDC-cijfers om vergelijking tussen versies mogelijk te maken. Van deze versies kan de CO2-emissie op basis waarvan belasting en toeslagen worden berekend (in elk geval onderling) afwijken van de cijfers die hier zijn weergegeven (afhankelijk van mogelijk per land verschillende wetgeving).

   

  De CO2-emissiecijfers zijn bepaald volgens de Europese Richtlijn 1999/94/EC en de nieuwste versie van de Duitse Pkw-EnVKV en zijn voor classificatie gebaseerd op de verbruiks- en CO2-emissiecijfers volgens de NEDC-testcyclus.

Munich. The BMW i3 sets standards worldwide for driving pleasure in a purely electrically-driven vehicle. Key factors here are not only the increased output of the motor in the new BMW i3s, but also the innovative traction control system adapted specifically to the instantaneous power deliver of the BMW eDrive system. Presented for the first time in the new BMW i3s (270 Nm at 0 rpm, 135 kW / 184 HP, power consumption combined in European NEFZ test-cycle*: 14.3 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 0 g/km), the system improves traction and driving stability in adverse weather and road conditions when pulling away, in active Brake Energy Regeneration phases and when accelerating out of tight corners. At the heart of this innovation is the control system’s 50-times-faster routine, made possible because – unlike conventional driving stability systems – the control process is now calculated directly in the powertrain instead of in a remote unit requiring long signal paths. This development provides further evidence of BMW i as a pioneer of innovative technology within the BMW Group.

“With their high levels of torque and instantaneous responses to every movement of the accelerator, electric motors already make significantly higher demands on driving stability systems than conventional power units,” explains Peter Langen, Head of Chassis Development at BMW.

That’s why the BMW engineers developed a new type of system geared squarely to the demands of electric mobility.
The positive impact of these shorter control cycles is not reserved for purely electrically driven cars; indeed, this innovative traction control system also optimises traction, driving stability and driving dynamics in vehicles with combustion engines. It will therefore be fitted in BMW and MINI models with front-, rear- and all-wheel drive to deliver noticeably greater assurance and driving pleasure when road conditions make pulling away difficult.
