The common feature of the twoconcept cars is a surface
structure that emphasises the groundbreaking design and the
innovativecharacter of the modelsBMW i3and BMW i8in a fascinating
way. The focus here is on a specific colour designthat was
developed on the basis ofa common paintinggenreduring the late 19

disciplines of fashion, automobileand design. As a designer, I
find this comprehensive approach particularly exciting,"says
Adrian van Hooydonk, head ofBMW Group Design. "WithBMW i,we
have been successful in overcoming previous restrictions in
automotive design through the use of entirely new materials. So

InJune2016, Garage Italia Customs had alreadypresented the BMW
i8 Futurism Edition. Thisvehicle alsofeatured a body surface concept
thatwas inspired by the art of painting. The design of theBMW i8
Futurism Edition, which was created on the occasion of the 50
th
anniversary of BMW Italia, is based on the painting"Lampada
ad Arco"by the futuristic artistGiacomo Balla.
"Technological development and constant search for innovation
are common key values to both Garage Italia Customs and BMW,"
adds Lapo Elkann, Chairman and Founder of Garage Italia Customs.
"BMW i automobiles provideour designers with ideal
opportunities for an artistic exploration of the future of
mobility. The CrossFade project was a great opportunity to
create something beyond the traditional idea of car painting,
generating amazing effectswith a unique geometrical pattern."

The design of the concept cars now being shown in Paris was
inspired byoptical colour mixing, a technique already used in
Pointillism ofthe late 19
th
century. Thispaintingtechniqueinvolves the creation of motifs
using small and evenly distributed dashes of colour. Because the
neighbouring colours are not intermixed, but only blend together in
the perception of the viewer, a particularly intensive radiance is
created. The selective variation of size and spacing of the
individual dashes permits the creation of both precise and
harmonious colour gradients.

On the body surface of the

BMW i8 Garage ItaliaCrossFade
, the accurately definedcolour changes between Protonic Blue
metallic andProtonic Dark Silver metallic are used to intensively
underscore the lines and surface contours. Moreover, the applied
dashes of paint are triangular. Resulting from this geometrical
shape, both the overall impression as well as the plug-in hybrid
sports car’s dynamicsalready symbolised inthe design are accentuated
even further. The colour designwas realised using a complex painting
process in which the car finished inProtonic Blue metallic was
initially covered with a stencilfilm. In this way,it was possible to
create the desired geometrical pattern withexceptionally
highprecision when the second layer of paint in Protonic Dark
Silvermetallic was finally applied. Moreover, the interior follows
the

BMW i8 Garage Italia CrossFade
’s exterior design with the smooth transition from the dark
silver ofthe front end of the car to the pure blue of the rear end
printed on Alcantara textile that now covers the central tunnel, the
side panels and the headliner. The surface structure of the interior
andthe seats in Foglizzo leather, and Protonic Blue and
perforatedAlcantarais effectively accentuated by the contrasting colours.

In the case ofthe BMW i3 Garage Italia CrossFade, the colour
transition on the front end and the side panels flows in a vertical
direction. The amount of bluedecreases as it risesupwards to merge
with the black roof and bonnet. The smooth transition is createdby a
transparentfoilingwith imprinted circular dashes of
colourthatsymbolise the driving pleasure offered by the electrically
powered five door car and become larger with increasing height. The
distinctive colour designis also to be found in the interior, where
high-quality textile and Alcantarasurfaces additionally emphasise the
premiumcharacter of the car.Base colourin each case is Protonic Blue,
which is now also optionally available for the BMW i3 and exclusively
in conjunction with the 94Ah high-voltage battery.

Paris.

Depuis novembre 2015, BMW propose trois
autres modèles hybrides rechargeables, regroupés sous l’appellation
BMW i Performance :

gratuitement (« My BMW Remote » pour les modèles BMW i Performance /
« BMW i Remote » pour les modèles BMW i), permettant :

alternative : mode ECO PRO +, recalcul d’itinéraire, localisation

Contact presse: Olivier Wodetzki
Tél: +33-130-031-918
Adresse e-mail: olivier.wodetzki@bmw.fr

X5,Press Kit,BMW,Sedan,BMW i,i3,Coupé,F15,2 Series,3 Series,I01,I12,F30 PHEV,F45,F30 LCI,i8,Active Tourer,330e,Product

permet ainsi une autonomie supplémentaire de 150 kilomètres;
consommation de carburant en cycle mixte 0,6 l /100 km ;
consommation d’électricité en cycle mixte 11,3 kWh /100 km ;

BMW will be lining up for the FIA Formula E Championship once
again in
2015/16
.
The second season of the race series got underway in
Beijing on 17 October 2015, and BMW has been on hand as
the Official Vehicle Partner. The next session will take place
in Paris on 23 April 2016.

The futuristic BMW i8 sports car (fuel consumption combined:
2.1 l/100 km / 134.5 mpg imp; CO2 emissions combined: 49 g/km) will
once again see action as the Safety Car in the trailblazing race
series for electrically-powered formula machines. And the all-electric
(and therefore emission-free) BMW i3 (energy consumption combined:
12.9 kWh; CO2 emissions combined: 0 g/km) will perform the role of
Medical Car, as it did in the series’ inaugural season. Added to
which, a pair of BMW C evolution electric scooters and a
BMW X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid (fuel consumption combined:
3.4–3.3 l/100 km / 83.1–85.6 mpg imp; CO2 emissions combined:
78–77 g/km; figures based on the EU test cycle, may vary depending on
the tyre format specified) will be making their Formula E
debuts, as models from other BMW Group brands join the BMW i cars in
the eDrive family
.

“BMW i and Formula E make a great match,” said Jörg Reimann, Vice
President BMW Brand Experience. “The world governing body
of motor sport, the FIA, is branching out in a new and extremely
interesting direction with the FIA Formula E Championship – and we
have been on board from the outset. The series got off to a highly
successful start in its first year on the calendar, with its
all-electric formula racing cars, tight street circuits running
through the heart of major world cities and innovative ideas engaging
fans via social networks. BMW has been involved in Formula E from the
word go. It signed up as the Official Vehicle Partner to supply the
BMW i8 Safety Car and BMW i3 Medical Car. And this commitment has
given the company a platform on which to press its claim as a leader
in electric mobility. We’ve succeeded in bringing the
driving pleasure for which BMW is renowned to the attention of
millions of people in major cities around the world. The ball is very
much rolling now; in 2014 and 2015 we laid the
foundations for a successful partnership, and it’s one which will
continue into the second season of the championship in 2015/2016.”

Formula E has become an “open” championship in its second
season. Compared with the inaugural edition of the series, in which
all the cars were technically identical, eight of the ten teams has
line up for the new season with their own technology. The technical
changes are concentrated on the powertrain – specifically the
electric motor, the inverter, the transmission and the cooling
system – and see the cars differing in terms of speeds, soundtrack
and, above all, efficiency levels over the race distance.

The
2014/15
Formula E calendar featured e
leven races in ten countries
on three continents.
Ten teams took their places on the grid for that opening season,
each with two drivers at the wheel of standardised cars
. Nelson Piquet Jr. wrapped up the title in the final race in
London – and duly took his place in the history books as the first
ever champion in this new series.

The new season has began on 17 October 2015 and again took in
eleven races in ten countries.

BMW i8.

The BMW i8 is the most progressive sports car of our times and,
by combining the performance and appeal of a sports car with small
car fuel economy, created a new segment as the first sustainable
sports car. It offers zero-emission driving in town (eDrive) and
efficient sports car performance out of town, where a highly
turbocharged and efficient 1.5-litre petrol engine with BMW
TwinPower Turbo technology also comes into play.

With its revolutionary vehicle concept – which brings together a
carbon-fibre passenger cell, aluminium chassis and benchmark
aerodynamics for its segment (Cd: 0.26) – the BMW i8 represents the
company’s technological cutting edge.

The BMW i8 continues as the Official FIA Formula E Qualcomm
Safety Car through the second season of Formula E. The modifications
to the two new Safety Cars are far more performance-oriented and
they have been adapted to meet the FIA’s technical regulations ahead
of the new season, which got underway in Beijing on 17 October.
