The
fifth generation of the BMW X5 impresses with technical innovations, a
stunning new design and the integration of future-oriented
technologies from the Neue Klasse. This underlines its exceptional
status and reinforces its leading position in a segment that it
originally established.

First model from the brand with
five different drive system types.
As the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) from the brand and
founding father of the eminently successful BMW X family, the
trendsetting BMW X5 has been shaping the future in innovative style
since its introduction in 1999. Embodying that very same aspiration,
the new BMW X5 is the first model from the brand to come to market
with a choice of five different drive system types.

In addition to variants with petrol or diesel combustion engines,
including 48V mild hybrid technology, and plug-in hybrid models, the
fifth generation of the successful model does not just encompass the
first all-electric BMW iX5. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is also set to
celebrate its market launch – at a later stage – as the first
hydrogen-powered BMW production vehicle. The powertrain encompasses
the fuel cell system, in-car hydrogen storage with the new BMW
Hydrogen Flat Storage technology and an innovative high-voltage
battery. The third generation of the fuel cell system enables
a particularly compact design within a high-performance, efficient
drive system with a range of up to 750 kilometres (466 miles)[1].

The new BMW iX5 – the first battery-electric BMW X5 – is launching
with the sixth generation of BMW’s eDrive technology. This means
longer ranges of up to 845 kilometres (525 miles) in the
BMW iX5 60 xDrive, fast charging, 800V technology and practical
bidirectional charging. This is thanks to new cylindrical cells with a
height of 120 millimetres, installed in the high-voltage battery and
in use for the first time in the new BMW iX5.

“With its imposing presence and flawless symbiosis of comfort and
driving pleasure, the BMW X5 became a global bestseller,” says
Dr. Joachim Post, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG
responsible for Development. “And now the latest generation also
benefits from the technologies in the Neue Klasse and the widest
possible range of drive systems. As a result, I’m sure the new BMW X5
will set the benchmark in its class once again and write the next
chapter in its success story.”

New design: unmistakeable presence from every perspective
.
The new BMW X5 also takes a major leap forward in terms of
design. Viewed from any perspective, the clear, monolithic and
powerful appearance of the car embodies the confident presence that
underlines its leading position in the segment, becoming one of the
key faces of the brand. This is in large part down to the effortless
melding of classic SAV proportions with the forward-looking BMW design
language of the Neue Klasse to produce a harmonious, distinct end result.

The next generation of the distinctive X exterior is characterised by
the upright design of the front end, the vertically aligned BMW kidney
Iconic Glow and the new “double-X” light icons, making their first
appearance in a BMW. The clearly structured side view of the BMW X5 is
particularly impressive, thanks in large part to the innovative door
handles, the BMW Winglets. These combine progressive design with
functional convenience: recessed handles requires the lightest of
touches to open the electrically powered doors.

Naturally, all models offer broad scope for tailoring the design,
including eleven exterior paint colours and a precisely curated wheel
range that now boasts 23-inch rims. The new BMW X5 M60e xDrive creates
visual highlights emphasising its role as the sporting flagship, while
the M Sport package and the M Sport package Pro provide a range of
distinctive features.

Spacious, natural and innovative: redesigned interior combines
feel good atmosphere with digital user experience.
One glance at the redesigned interior immediately reveals the
extremely high quality of the new BMW X5. The interior impresses with
clear structures and uncluttered surfaces, producing a harmonious
sense of space and calmly providing subtle support for classic BMW
driver orientation.

The outstanding visual and haptic quality of the interior is also
underlined by the new decorative surfaces constructed from materials
such as slate and glass that generate an atmosphere of elemental
sophistication. BMW is the first carmaker worldwide to offer slate as
an optional decorative surface.

The BMW X5 incorporates core technologies from the Neue Klasse in the
form of the new BMW Panoramic iDrive display and operating system,
underpinned by BMW Operating System X. These include the Central
Display in free-cut design, the BMW 3D Head-Up Display, the
BMW Passenger Screen available as an optional extra in the BMW X5 for
the first time, the BMW Panoramic Vision with a projection surface
extending across the full width of the windscreen and the new
multifunction steering wheel. This results in an all-encompassing
digital user experience centred around both the driver and their passengers.

The BMW X5 combines fascinating new technologies with a genuinely
feel-good interior atmosphere. This is expressed in the lighting
animations provided by the ambient light strip, a central element that
creates an inviting wrap-around effect from door to door to generate a
harmonious atmosphere.

BMW X5 combines a high level of comfort with BMW typical
driving dynamics and intelligent driver assistance systems.
As the sportiest SUV in its segment, the BMW X5 has long set
standards in terms of driving dynamics – and the latest generation
of the BMW X5 is equally impressive in its this respect. This is due
in no small part to the adaptive suspension fitted as standard and
axle load distribution close to 50:50. Optional extras include
Adaptive Chassis Control, as well as the Adaptive Chassis Control
Professional with roll stabilisation initially available for every
all‑electric and plug‑in hybrid model. This system leads the way
when it comes to blending BMW’s characteristic driving dynamics with
maximum ride comfort.

BMW Symbiotic Drive provides intelligent support tailored to
individual driving behaviour. The advanced Level 2 driver assistance
systems and active safety functions are designed down to the smallest
detail for seamless interaction between assistance and human driving.
In the BMW iX5 models, and in the upcoming BMW iX5 Hydrogen, the
Heart of Joy also enables a very special experience: BMW Soft-Stop,
which executes the smoothest stopping action every provided by BMW.

Production and premiere in Spartanburg.
The market launch of the first variants of the new BMW X5 is
scheduled for late November 2026, with the all-electric and
plug‑in hybrid versions to follow in early 2027. Production of the
new models will ramp up some months ahead of this, with
BMW Group Plant Spartanburg (USA) initiating series production of the
fifth-generation BMW X5 in August 2026.

Plant Spartanburg has been producing the X5 ever since it was
launched – founding a new market segment – in 1999. And now the
facility is celebrating a new premiere: the new BMW iX5 will be the
first all-electric vehicle to be manufactured there. The new factory
for sixth-generation high-voltage batteries built for this model
variant adjacent to BMW Group Plant Spartanburg requires no fossil
fuels for normal operations. This is just one of many examples of
the BMW Group’s rigorous approach to minimising CO2e
emissions during production.

Munich/Spartanburg (USA). The new BMW X5 has entered
the finishing straight in its development programme. The fifth
generation of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) is now completing
final calibration drives around its production base at BMW Group Plant
Spartanburg in the USA. The new BMW X5 will be the first
BMW production model to be introduced onto the market with a choice of
five different drive system technologies. The first fully electric
BMW iX5 will be making its debut, and this will be followed in 2028 by
the arrival of the first ever hydrogen-powered BMW to go into series
production – the BMW iX5 Hydrogen. Also available will be petrol and
diesel variants with 48V mild hybrid technology, and plug‑in hybrid
models. Media representatives from various countries took the chance
to sample the BMW X5 40 xDrive (294 kW/400 hp), BMW X5 50e xDrive
plug-in hybrid (360 kW/490 hp) and BMW iX5 60 xDrive (425 kW/578 hp)
in the concluding test drives before the start of production.

The fully electric BMW iX5: world premiere with new Gen6
eDrive technology.

The first battery-electric BMW iX5 is based on the sixth generation
of BMW eDrive technology, which features a new high-voltage battery
concept with cylindrical cells and 800V technology. With its usable
energy content of 144 kWh in the USA and 141 kWh in the EU (net), the
BMW iX5 60 xDrive boasts the largest high-voltage battery to be fitted
in an all-electric BMW model to date. Propulsive power is provided by
one electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear, working
in tandem with BMW xDrive electric all-wheel drive.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen: hydrogen-powered production model from
BMW due in 2028 with innovative Flat Storage system.
The first ever hydrogen-powered BMW production model, the BMW
iX5 Hydrogen, will hit the roads in 2028. Its powertrain comprises a
fuel cell system, the new BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage system and an
innovative high-voltage battery. The third generation of the fuel cell
system forms the basis for a particularly compact design as well as
high power and efficiency. The flat tank system consists of seven
high-pressure tanks made of a carbon-fibre reinforced composite, which
are connected with one another in parallel. These are integrated into
a robust metal frame. This layout makes exceptionally efficient use of
the space the system takes up in the vehicle; no room is lost inside
the cabin. Another benefit is that models with fuel cell technology
can be built on the same production line as other drive system types.

Pure driving pleasure thanks to the Heart of Joy.
The new BMW X5 will offer a new-dimension driving experience
courtesy of technology from the Neue Klasse – the Heart of Joy
featuring the BMW Dynamic Performance Control driving stack developed
fully in-house. This high-performance control unit acts ten times
faster than previous systems, meaning it is able to make adjustments
to the powertrain, brakes, steering sub-functions, charging and
recuperation in a matter of milliseconds. The result is remarkable
agility, poise and precision. In the BMW iX5 and BMW iX5 Hydrogen,
this technology also impresses with extremely smooth stopping
manoeuvres while also increasing efficiency by recovering more energy
under deceleration with regenerative braking. In combustion-engined or
plug-in hybrid models, the latest digital and highly interconnected
driving dynamics systems ensure the car always makes optimum use of
the available traction and delivers composed handling at all times.
These systems include the standard-fitted tenth-generation transverse
dynamics management system and near-actuator wheel slip limitation,
both supported by precisely tuned chassis components.

The wheels – larger rims with diameters of up to 23 inches can now be
specified – and the standard mixed-size tyres further enhance comfort,
stability and dynamism. The new BMW X5 comes as standard with adaptive
suspension whose dampers are controlled electronically for each
individual wheel, plus almost 50:50 weight distribution. The dampers
can be continuously adjusted, enabling everything from a very
comfortable ride through to sporty, dynamic handling. Adaptive Chassis
Control Professional, which is available as an option for the
all‑electric BMW iX5 and the plug-in hybrid models, maximises dynamic
prowess. It includes two-axle air suspension with electronically
controlled dampers, Integral Active Steering and active roll stabilisation.

Next-generation driver assistance systems.
The new BMW X5 features innovative SAE Level 2 driver
assistance systems and active safety functions from the Neue Klasse
technology clusters. Customers can therefore look forward to
significant upgrades and extended functionality, as well
as BMW Symbiotic Drive. One example of these innovations is the
optional Motorway and City Assistant, which includes Entry-2-Exit
assistance on motorways and Address‑2‑Address assistance in urban
areas. The advanced Level 2 driver assistance systems from BMW are
meticulously designed for seamless interaction between assistance tech
and human driving habits. The aim here is not to attain the highest
possible level of automation in every situation, but to provide a safe
driver assistance experience that offers maximum benefit and remains
controllable at all times. As a result, the driver always stays
involved as human and artificial intelligence interact. With driver
assistance systems active, this means the driver can accelerate, steer
and brake as required, without instantly deactivating the assistance
system in the process. The straightforward operating logic and clear
displays of BMW Panoramic iDrive ensure that assisted driving is
intuitive and controllable at all times, enabling safe use of the
highest SAE Level 2 automation.

The symbiotic interaction between driver and vehicle can also be
experienced with active safety functions that work unobtrusively in
the background as silent companions. A good example is the Lane
Keeping Assistant, which detects t. The driver’s intention based on
steering behaviour and where they are looking. The system only assists
with warnings and steering inputs when the driver really is drifting
out of their lane unintentionally or an impending collision is
detected. Other safety functions include automated evasive manoeuvring
within the car’s own lane, Lane Change Warning, Side Collision Warning
with steering intervention when there is a risk of a lateral
collision, plus Crossing Traffic Warning and automatic braking when
turning into a road or exiting a parking space.

* As this is a development-phase prototype, the figures given are
provisional. Energy consumption information as per WLTP is not yet available.

Contact presse: Fanny De Leenheer
Tél: 038905175
Adresse e-mail: fanny.de-leenheer@partner.bmw.be

Press Release,X5,iX5 Hydrogen,iX5,X5 50e xDrive,Product,BMW

Munich/Dubai. The vehicles in the BMW iX5 Hydrogen
pilot fleet, which launched in February this year, have completed an
intensive round of hot-weather testing in the United Arab Emirates
for the first time. The car’s fuel cell drive system performed
impressively in the face of temperatures rising to 45°C, as well as
sand and dust, varying gradients and significant fluctuations in humidity.

The highly efficient fuel cell system, the two hydrogen tanks,
the electric motor and the power battery teamed up with the central
vehicle control unit to demonstrate their outstanding performance
and state of readiness. The Munich-based development team examined
both the functionality of all the electric systems under the extreme
conditions and the provision of the cooling power to enable the full
performance of the vehicle. The vehicles were able to ensure the
driving dynamics for which BMW is renowned.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen goes around the
world
Vehicles from the pilot fleet are currently in
action in Europe, Japan, Korea, China, the USA and the Middle East.
The aim is to shine a spotlight on the everyday usability of
hydrogen-powered vehicles, and beyond that to gain important
knowledge for the development of a potential series-produced model.
The BMW Group is using the pilot fleet to provide support on a
regional level for the development of a refuelling infrastructure
which can be used with 700-bar refuelling technology across all
categories of vehicle – from passenger cars and small vans to buses
and heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Synergies between different
areas of application also offer important scope for developing a
strong network of suppliers in hydrogen technology and reducing costs.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen combines long-distance capability and
short refuelling stops with locally emission-free driving. Provided
the relevant framework is in place, the hydrogen fuel cell
technology has the potential to serve as another pillar in the BMW
Group’s future drive system portfolio.

As part of its ongoing transformation, the BMW Group is
applying a “technology-open” approach when it comes to drive
systems. The company is therefore adapting to different customer
requirements, infrastructure standards and political and regulatory
landscapes in the various regions of the world. This flexibility
puts the BMW Group in the position to respond quickly to changing
requirements in the markets in any situation and to present an
attractive offer for as many customers as possible at all times.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen has a fuel cell system generating output
of 125 kW/170 hp and a highly integrated drive unit using
fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology (the electric motor,
transmission and power electronics are grouped together in a compact
housing). The output of the overall drive system is 295 kW / 401 hp.
The hydrogen needed to power the fuel cell is stored in a pair of
700-bar tanks made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).
Together, these tanks can hold around six kilograms of hydrogen.
This storage capacity gives the BMW iX5 Hydrogen a range of 504 km
(313 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

Munich. At the IAA Mobility 2023 international motor
show in Munich, the BMW Group will be presenting the most recent
highlights of its ongoing transformation in the key action areas of
electrification, digitalisation and circularity. The latest new models
with electrified powertrains from the BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad
brands, plus Vision Vehicles and concepts for individual mobility in
tomorrow’s world all serve to underline the company’s innovative
strength in these fields. As the dawn of a new era in personal
mobility approaches, the BMW Group is set to unveil its latest
highlight, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, which brings together the
Group’s development expertise in the three crucial disciplines for the
future of mobility.

The IAA Mobility show is being staged in Munich for the second time.
For the BMW Group and its brands, this provides an excellent
opportunity to enter into constructive dialogue on the future of
individual mobility with local people, as well as with visitors to the
show from outside Munich and other stakeholders. The IAA Mobility
Summit at the exhibition centre and the BMW Group’s Open Space at
Max-Joseph-Platz in the heart of Munich will be the main arenas where
BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad present their new products on 5 –
10 September 2023. Among the models visitors can acquaint themselves
with here alongside the BMW Vision Neue Klasse is the fully electric
BMW i5. And they can also experience the world premieres of the new
fully electric MINI Cooper, new fully electric MINI Countryman and
BMW CE 02 eParkourer.

Electric, digital, circular – the focus areas of the BMW Group.

The BMW Group’s presence at IAA Mobility 2023 revolves around the
company’s rigorous focus on electric, digital and circular mobility
for the future and the latest progress it has made in these areas. The
BMW Vision Neue Klasse is joined by a selection of new models from
across the Group’s brands whose electrified powertrains, digital
innovations and resource-efficient manufacturing illustrate the
ongoing process of change in a variety of ways.

The new products poised for launch by the BMW brand include the
plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW 5 Series. The new
BMW i7 Protection – the first ever all-electric protection vehicle in
the luxury sedan segment – is also making its debut at IAA Mobility 2023.

MINI is unveiling the members of the brand’s new model family for the
first time with the help of two world premieres: the new fully
electric MINI Cooper and new fully electric MINI Countryman will both
be on show at the Open Space site. A new model with all-electric drive
also forms the centrepiece of BMW Motorrad’s line-up at
Max-Joseph-Platz. Conceived as a compact eParkourer with a
trailblazing design, the new BMW CE 02 injects fresh impetus into the
urban mobility scene.

Locally emission-free mobility sets the theme for the models
on show.

The IAA Mobility show will be officially opened on 5 September at
Munich’s exhibition centre. The BMW Group will be represented at its
stand in Hall A2, where the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will be unveiled to
kick off the event. The BMW i7 Protection all-electric protection
vehicle will also be presented for the first time at the IAA Mobility Summit.

The IAA Mobility Summit is taking place under the banner “Experience
Connected Mobility” and is aimed primarily at trade visitors. It will
showcase trends and technological innovations for future mobility over
the course of numerous talks, presentations and panel discussions. One
of the central topics is the use of hydrogen as an energy source for
current and future vehicles. BMW is carrying out pioneering work in
this field with its development and practical testing of a Sports
Activity Vehicle with a hydrogen-powered fuel-cell drive system. The
BMW iX5 Hydrogen is also being exhibited at the Summit.

Locally emission-free mobility is also the dominant theme for the
models awaiting visitors to the Open Space site. BMW has at least one
purely electrically powered representative in all relevant model
segments. The brand is presenting its entire line-up to the public,
ranging from the BMW iX1 compact Sports Activity Vehicle via the BMW
i4 and BMW i5 to the BMW iX and the BMW i7 luxury sedan.

The Open Space at Max-Joseph-Platz can be visited free of charge on 5
– 9 September from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday 10 September from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition, BMW Welt will continue to provide an
attractive destination for all automotive enthusiasts during IAA
Mobility 2023. The current model portfolios of the BMW, MINI,
Rolls-Royce and BMW Motorrad brands are presented here, along with the
latest BMW and MINI Lifestyle collections. Plus, starting on
2 September 2023, BMW Lifestyle together with BMW M GmbH will be
running a GOODS WITH FREUDE pop-up store in the Hofstatt shopping
centre at No. 10 Sendlinger Straße. Located just a few minutes’ walk
away from the Open Space, the store will feature both familiar
lifestyle articles and the new BMW Lifestyle collection.

World premiere: the BMW Vision Neue Klasse.

At IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Group is offering visitors a preview of
the Neue Klasse – the forthcoming generation of models from BMW. The
BMW Vision Neue Klasse brings together innovations from the areas of
electrification, digitalisation and circularity in signature BMW
style. The Vision Vehicle takes design, control/operation, efficiency
and sustainability into a whole new dimension – one that it will be
possible to experience on the road before long.

During IAA Mobility 2023, the BMW Vision Neue Klasse will be on show
at both the Summit and the Open Space. The new Vision Vehicle
incorporates the latest innovations in the BMW Group’s key
future-focused fields. It therefore builds on the BMW i Vision
Circular and the BMW i Vision Dee – which have already demonstrated
the BMW Group’s development expertise in the areas of circular economy
and digitalisation – and combines their qualities with further new
developments in exterior and interior design, user experience and
powertrain and battery technology.

World premiere: the plug-in hybrid variants of the new BMW
5 Series Sedan.

As well as the all-electric BMW i5, the brand is exhibiting two other
model variants with electrified powertrains at IAA Mobility 2023. As
early as spring 2024, two models featuring state-of-the-art plug-in
hybrid technology will be added to the new BMW 5 Series Sedan range.
Their six-cylinder and four-cylinder in-line petrol engines from the
new modular generation of Efficient Dynamics units will each be
combined with the latest BMW eDrive technology for plug-in hybrid
systems. This will result in a notable increase in output and much
sharper power delivery, while also significantly improving efficiency
and electric range compared to the outgoing model generation.

The electric motor purpose-developed for the new plug-in hybrid
system is integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport
transmission together with its power electronics. The highly
integrated drive unit contributes up to 145 kW/197 hp to the maximum
combined output of 360 kW/489 hp in the case of the new
BMW 550e xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 1.1 – 0.8 l/100 km
[256.8 – 353.1 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 22.5 –
20.1 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 24 – 19 g/km in
WLTP cycle, provisional figures) and 220 kW/299 hp for the new
BMW 530e Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 0.8 – 0.6 l/100 km [353.1 –
470.8 mpg imp]; electric power consumption combined: 21.4 –
18.9 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 19 – 14 g/km in
WLTP cycle, provisional figures).

A BMW-patented innovation has been used to enhance the electric
motor’s power delivery in the new plug-in hybrid models: a pre-gearing
stage enables the nominal torque of 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) to be increased
to effective torque of up to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) at the transmission
input for the motor. The compact electric motor is therefore able to
boost torque by an amount that would normally only be possible using a
larger unit and makes a clear difference both when accelerating off
the line and putting in a rapid burst of speed. Electric range is now
up to 79 – 90 kilometres (49 – 56 miles) in the WLTP cycle for the new
BMW 550e xDrive Sedan and 87 – 101 kilometres (54 – 63 miles) in the
WLTP cycle for the new BMW 530e Sedan.

The lithium-ion high-voltage battery’s space-saving positioning
within the vehicle’s underbody has a beneficial effect on both the
car’s centre of gravity and the capacity of its luggage compartment,
which holds a total of 520 litres in the plug-in hybrid models –
meaning it is just as large as that offered by their purely
combustion-engined siblings. The usable energy provided by the
high-voltage battery has climbed to 19.4 kWh. At the same time,
maximum charging capacity has doubled compared to the outdoing models
and now stands at 7.4 kW, enabling the high-voltage battery to be
fully recharged from empty in 3.0 hours. When hooked up to a
conventional domestic power socket, a full vehicle charge is completed
in 9.8 hours.

World premiere: the BMW i7 Protection.

BMW is presenting a new generation of protection vehicles in the
luxury sedan segment at the IAA Mobility 2023 show. The new BMW i7
Protection (electric power consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 30.0
kWh/100 km, provisional figure) is absolutely unique in this segment,
as it is the world’s first ever certified protection sedan with an
all-electric drive system. Driven by two powerful electric motors, it
meets all the requirements of class VR9 protection without any
limitations, as does the new V8-engined BMW 7 Series Protection (fuel
consumption combined in WLTP cycle: 14.6 l/100 km [19.3 mpg imp];
CO2 emissions: 328 g/km, provisional figures).

Both models blend the integrated protection concept channelled into
the development of the new BMW 7 Series range with outstanding levels
of ride comfort and spaciousness, advanced equipment features and the
unbeatable dynamic prowess for which BMW is renowned. The concept
centres around the new and unique BMW Protection Core, which forms a
self-supporting body structure made from armour steel. This is then
combined with features such as additional armouring for the underbody
and roof, plus armoured glass. The result is customised protection
from attacks with firearms or explosives for at-risk individuals. The
glass in the new protection vehicles even meets the requirements for
the highest class of civilian protection, VPAM 10.

The all-electric BMW i7 Protection is equipped with one electric
motor at the front axle and another at the rear. Together they
generate a combined output of 400 kW/544 hp and maximum combined
torque of 745 Nm (549 lb-ft), and create an electric all-wheel-drive
system. The new BMW i7 Protection sprints to 100 km/h (62 mph) from
rest in 9.0 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to
160 km/h (99 mph). The instantaneous, precisely orchestrated power
delivery from the two motors guarantees exceptional traction and
directional stability even when the car is being driven hard and
performing challenging manoeuvres, such as when escaping from an attack.

Tuned and optimised specifically for this model, the chassis
technology also makes allowance for the additional weight of its
armouring, resulting in superbly assured performance in any situation.
Another unique offering for this segment is the inclusion of Integral
Active Steering as standard. This reduces the car’s turning circle,
increases agility when cornering at speed and improves driving comfort
for rear-seat passengers. The 20-inch light-alloy wheels are a further
standout feature. The PAX tyres that also come as standard allow the
car to continue its journey at up to 80 km/h (50 mph) even in the
event of a total loss of pressure.

The latest generation of BMW iDrive based on BMW Operating System 8.5
is fitted, complete with the BMW Curved Display. The system is
intuitive to use and operates in a way familiar to BMW drivers. The
special functions relevant to occupant protection are also operated
via BMW iDrive. The new protection vehicles can also be tailored
precisely to any purpose, with items including a fresh-air supply
system, a fire extinguishing system, flashing lights, radio
transceivers and flag poles for when the car is on official duty, plus
other special customer-specific options.

Trailblazing: the BMW iX5 Hydrogen.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen presented at IAA Mobility 2023 provides further
evidence of the company’s superlative innovative strength in the field
of drive technology. A pilot series of the Sports Activity Vehicle
with hydrogen fuel-cell drive, developed on the basis of the current
BMW X5, has entered service for demonstration and test purposes with
various target groups around the world. This allows selected test
groups who haven’t been involved in the development process to get
behind the wheel of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen and gain a direct impression
of its attributes for the first time.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is equipped with the latest, fifth generation of
BMW eDrive technology. The highly integrated drive unit at the rear
axle draws its energy from a high-performance battery with li-ion
technology that was specially developed for the hydrogen fuel-cell
vehicle and generates maximum output of 295 kW/401 hp. The electric
motor also doubles as a generator that feeds energy back into the
high-performance battery on the overrun or under braking.

The model’s two 700-bar tanks made from carbon-fibre-reinforced
plastic (CFRP) together hold six kilograms of gaseous hydrogen and can
be refilled in three to four minutes. A chemical reaction takes place
in the fuel cell system between the hydrogen and oxygen from the air,
through which the electric power for the electric motor is generated.
The BMW iX5 Hydrogen achieves a range of 504 kilometres (313 miles) in
the WLTP cycle without having to refill the tanks. The
hydrogen-powered SAV completes the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in
under six seconds and goes on to reach a top speed in excess of
180 km/h (112 mph).

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen combines long-distance capabilities and short
refuelling stops with zero tailpipe emissions and hallmark BMW driving
dynamics. Its hydrogen fuel-cell technology has the potential –
provided the necessary basic conditions are in place – to serve as an
additional pillar in the BMW Group’s future powertrain portfolio. As
part of its ongoing transformation, the BMW Group is following an
approach that embraces all technologies when it comes to drive
systems. The company is therefore readying itself for differing
customer requirements, infrastructure standards and political and
regulatory frameworks in the various regions of the world. This degree
of flexibility puts the BMW Group in a position to react quickly to
changing requirements in the markets in any situation and to present
as many customers as possible with an appropriate model offering at
all times.

Contact presse: Jeroen Lissens
Tél: +32-3-890-9708
Adresse e-mail: jeroen.lissens@bmw.be

Press Release,Research & Development,Drive Technologies,BMW i,Mobility of the future,Sedan,7 Series,5 Series,G30,G05,Europe,530e,i7,G70,G60,i5,550e,Munich,iX5 Hydrogen,iX5,Product,BMW
