BMW has enhanced its product portfolio with the introduction of the new BMW iX1 and BMW iX2 Shadow Edition alongside an expanded range of exterior paint colours for the BMW X3 M50 xDrive and BMW Z4 M40i with Handschalter Pack. Meanwhile, BMW Group UK continues its winning streak, with both BMW and MINI receiving multiple accolades from T3, Professional Driver and Company Car & Van.

New Shadow Edition available for BMW iX1 and BMW iX2.
The most compact models within the all-electric BMW SAV lineup can now be further personalised with the introduction of the BMW iX1 and BMW iX2 Shadow Edition. This new trim option packages an expanded list of standard equipment and sporty styling features at a compelling price. Over and above the M Sport trim, customers opting for the Shadow Edition receive 19-inch alloy wheels (for BMW iX1/already standard for BMW iX2), red M Sport brake callipers, Shadow Line Adaptive LED headlights and M Sport Pro Package styling features.

Increased personalisation for the BMW X3 M50 xDrive and BMW Z4 M40i with Handschalter Pack.
First introduced last summer, the BMW X3 M50 xDrive is equipped with the most powerful six-cylinder in-line petrol engine ever fitted in an M Performance model, delivering dynamic performance capabilities which set a new benchmark for driving pleasure in its class. From launch, customers opting for the range topper could choose from eight exterior paint finishes, however from April production, the colour palette will be expanded with the addition of 490 BMW Individual paint colours, including Sao Paulo Yellow, Daytona Violet and Frozen Black.

Also benefiting from an expanded range of exterior paints is BMW Z4 M40i with Handschalter Pack. Previously finished exclusively in Frozen Deep Green with Cognac upholstery, the six-speed manual roadster can now be specified in seven exterior paint options including Skycraper Grey, Thundernight Purple and San Francisco Red. Increased personalisation continues inside the cockpit with a choice of four new interior upholsteries. 

T3 presents the Best Car Tech award to the BMW Panoramic Vision.
Following the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), T3 has compiled its list of standout technologies from the Las Vegas event, with BMW’s revolutionary Panoramic Vision emerging as the title’s top pick for in-car innovation.

The BMW Panoramic Vision is the focal point of the next-generation BMW iDrive system, which will include the latest BMW Operating System X. Rolling out on all-new BMW models launched from the end of 2025, this industry-leading head-up display concept projects content across the entire lower portion of the windscreen, with the most important driving information available directly in the driver’s line of sight.

On presenting the award T3’s Editor-in-Chief Mat Gallagher said, “In-car tech is one of the most forward-thinking platforms right now and none more so than the new BMW iDrive system. Ready to feature in the next generation of electric vehicles – known as the Neue Klasse – the iDrive OSX system combines four elements to deliver optimum driver communication.

“The highlight is the Panoramic Vision, a thin projected screen that sits under the windscreen, providing a wealth of information. The contents are customisable, allowing you to drag and drop different widgets from the specially angled centre screen. It's super futuristic and really useful for keeping all those features in your eyeline. We can't wait to see it in the upcoming iX3 later this year.”

Double success for BMW at the 2025 Professional Driver Car of the Year awards.
Two of BMW’s flagship all-electric models collected category awards at the 2025 Professional Driver Car of the Year awards. With six categories in total, the annual awards are judged by Professional Driver readers, who evaluate more than 60 cars as part of the selection process.

The BMW i5 Touring was named Estate Car of the Year with Editor Mark Bursa commenting, “The estate Car category was test, with several strong contenders for the prize. But our judges went with an electric car – and one of the newest on the market. The BMW i5 Touring is not just a refined car that’s ideal for executive chauffeuring – it’s a joy to drive too.”

Following the success of the BMW M760e xDrive at last year’s awards, the BMW 7 Series continues to lead Professional Driver’s Chauffeur Car category, with the all-electric BMW i7 taking the 2025 top spot. “The new 7-series has become a game-changer in the chauffeur market, giving drivers and operators a practical and supremely luxurious electric limousine,” said Bursa.

BMW Group triumphs at the 2025 Company Car & Van Awards.
Company Car & Van (CC&V) offers expert advice to individuals who directly influence the make-up of their company’s fleet. Each year at the CC&V Awards, the title shortlists the best vehicles for the fleet market and crowns their overall Fleet Manufacturer of the Year. For 2025, this headline award was presented to the BMW Group.

CC&V Editor Andrew Walker praised BMW Group’s comprehensive product portfolio: “With a vast choice of electric & plug-in hybrid's BMW & MINI really came of age in 2024, cementing their position as the most forward thinking premium brand across all car sizes. Two further wins were garnered across both brands, with the BMW 5 Series and MINI Countryman each topping their respective category.

Named a “worthy” winner of the Executive Car of the Year 2025 award, the BMW 5 Series was commended for its “brilliant” drive and intuitive on-board technology. “The interior has the wow factor & in electric form, the i5 is probably the best all around electric saloon out there. If we had to choose one executive car, then the 5 Series would be it”, Walker added.

Meanwhile, the all-new MINI Countryman claimed the award for Medium Car of the Year, with judges applauding its nostalgia-infused yet technologically-advanced cabin. “It's the largest MINI yet, but don't let that worry you because both petrol & electric versions are best in class to drive, whilst offering decent interior space & a useful boot… A car we’d happily drive every day.”

For the first time, the range topping BMW Z4 M40i (fuel consumption combined: 34.0 – 35.3 mpg; CO2 emissions combined: 198 – 191 g/km in WLTP cycle) will be available with a six-speed manual gearbox.

The new engine/transmission pairing forms the core element of an enticing equipment package designed to place greater emphasis than ever on the two-seater’s unwavering focus on delivering an exhilarating open-top driving experience. The Handschalter Pack brings retuned chassis technology and mixed-size M light-alloy wheels measuring 19 inches in diameter at the front axle and 20 inches at the rear. Fresh impetus for the global market leader in the premium roadster segment. 
This new offering at the top of the model range pairs the most powerful variant of the roadster with the ideal tools to further increase its popularity. To date, nearly half of all customers in Germany have opted for the flagship version of the BMW Z4, whose straight-six engine gives it a unique selling point in a fiercely competitive segment occupied solely by German premium brands. The BMW M model has accounted for over 30 per cent of the roadster’s global sales volume in recent times.

The current, third generation of the BMW Z4 has been the leader in the premium roadster segment since launch with this model line-up and has seen its market shares grow continuously. The main sales region for the open-top two-seater is Germany, followed by the USA, China, the UK and Japan. The BMW Z4 M40i Handschalter will be launched with a production phase-in from March 2024. The roadster will continue to be built at the BMW Group’s manufacturing partner Magna Steyr Fahrzeugtechnik in the Austrian city of Graz.

The BMW roadster: giving a successful tradition a modern twist.
The history of roadsters from BMW is closely intertwined with a passion for sporty driving pleasure and abundant success on the racetrack. It stretches all the way back to the company’s early days as a carmaker and sits in its modern form in the shape of the BMW Z4.

A six-cylinder in-line engine, manual gearbox and rear-wheel drive also defined the driving experience in the BMW 328, which capped its debut public appearance in 1936 with victory in the Eifelrennen race at the Nürburgring. In more recent times, updated versions of this same powertrain arrangement have also made frequent appearances in the brand’s roadsters. This is true of both the BMW Z1, which was unveiled in 1987 after being developed as an innovation testbed by BMW Technik, and the BMW Z3 presented in 1995. And the first two model generations of the BMW Z4 also embraced the same recipe for delivering exhilarating driving pleasure under open skies.

Exclusive combination: six cylinders and a six-speed manual gearbox. 
The pairing of a straight-six engine with a six-speed manual gearbox means the new BMW Z4 M40i represents a unique proposition in this segment – and also a highly exclusive set-up within the BMW product portfolio. In fact, the only models in the current range available with this drive configuration are high-performance sports cars from BMW M GmbH. But now a BMW M Performance model is set to join them with the arrival of the BMW Z4 M40i Handschalter.

The 3.0-litre unit in the BMW Z4 M40i owes its familiar free-revving performance, instantaneous power delivery and silky smoothness to the latest M TwinPower Turbo technology. The engine’s special characteristics include a forged crankshaft, weight-optimised pistons and a water-cooled exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head. A twin-scroll turbocharger supplies the six combustion chambers with compressed air, whose temperature is regulated by means of an indirect intercooler. The package of drive unit technologies also comprises High Precision Injection operating at pressures up to 350 bar, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing.

With peak torque of 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) that can be summoned between 1,600 and 4,500 rpm, the engine generates compelling pulling power. Its maximum output of hp is on tap from 5,000 – 6,500 rpm.

In this special model, the task of transmitting power to the road is handled by a six-speed manual gearbox developed exclusively for the BMW Z4 M40i. It is a BMW modular transmission incorporating M-specific components for the gear set and shafts that has been modified for the straight-six engine’s output. The outer shift mechanism, comprising the shift lever, its guide and the connection to the transmission, has likewise been custom made for the BMW Z4 M40i Handschalter Pack – and delivers the unrivalled shift feel for which BMW models are renowned. The direct flow of power between engine and transmission combined with the driver’s central involvement in gear changes reinforces the emotional bond between driver and vehicle. A precisely defined shift action enables the gears to be changed swiftly and intuitively.

When power is relayed via the six-speed manual gearbox, the six-cylinder in-line engine propels the BMW Z4 M40i to 62 mph from rest in 4.6 seconds. The sprint from 0 to 62 mph takes 4.5 seconds on models with the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. Although by default the Steptronic Sport transmission will select the gears automatically, it also lets the driver control gear selection manually if desired. The shift paddles on the steering wheel are designed to allow spontaneous interaction with the drive system.

Refined chassis tuning, mixed-size wheels for the first time on the BMW Z4. 
Compact proportions, minimised weight, a low centre of gravity and virtually perfect 50:50 weight distribution are the defining elements of a BMW Z4 vehicle concept honed precisely to deliver agility and dynamic performance. The extremely rigid body and chassis structure and excellent aerodynamic attributes also help to mould the sports car character of the Z4. The roadster’s chassis design, combining a double-joint spring strut front axle with a five-link rear axle, produces a compelling and harmonious blend of dynamism and ride comfort.

The standard equipment roster for the BMW Z4 M40i includes variable sport steering, M Sport brakes and an M Sport differential at the rear axle along with adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, whose software has undergone extra fine-tuning for the Handschalter Pack. The exclusive chassis technology aboard the special model features bespoke auxiliary springs at the front and rear axles. A specially reinforced anti-roll bar clamp is also fitted at the front, while both the mapping for electronic control of the rear dampers and the software for the variable sport steering have been newly adjusted. In order to achieve sharper handling characteristics that will be appreciated by driving purists, the development team also equipped the traction control and M Sport differential with model-specific control logic.

Another new feature on the chassis side relates to the wheel sizes, as different-size wheels are being fitted to the model year 2024 BMW Z4 M40i for the first time. The new M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design with a Black high-gloss finish measure 19 inches in diameter at the front axle and 20 inches at the rear. Previously reserved for high-performance models from BMW M GmbH, this pairing enables optimum transfer of drive power to the road – especially in conjunction with rear-wheel drive – together with highly effective transmission of lateral control forces when cornering hard.

Handschalter Pack with individual exterior features. 
In addition to the six-speed manual gearbox, the refined chassis tuning and the combination of 19-inch and 20-inch M light-alloy wheels, the Handschalter Pack also adds individual design features to the exterior of the BMW Z4 M40i. These give the roadster a sharper look that underlines its more rounded sports car character, while also complementing the familiar M exterior features for optimising airflow and aerodynamic balance. They include the M High-gloss Shadowline trim with extended features – which also incorporates the model badging on the front side panels and the vehicle’s rear end – as well as the exterior mirror caps painted in Black high-gloss, specially designed flaps for streamlining the airflow in the area around the rear wheel arches and red brake callipers for the M Sport brakes.

A new exterior colour also forms part of the Handschalter Pack’s specification, Frozen Deep Green metallic finish, exclusively available in the Z4 family on this model.

The soft-top roof of the BMW Z4 is also available in an Anthracite Silver effect finish as an alternative to the standard black colour for all model variants. It is electrically operated and can be opened or closed in the space of ten seconds at the touch of a button, even while travelling at speeds up to 31 mph. A wind deflector, seat heating and two-zone automatic climate control also form part of standard specification on all variants of the roadster. The standard storage package.

Exclusive interior appointments for the Handschalter Pack . 
The interior of the BMW Z4 has been crafted for the enjoyment of unfettered driving pleasure in a space with a modern and sophisticated sports car feel. The driver-centric cockpit design and model-specific sport seats with integral head restraints both help to achieve this goal. The cabin combines clean lines that seem to surge forward with trim surfaces concentrated in just a few areas.

The Handschalter Pack includes M-specific design features for the interior supplemented by a number of exclusive details. For instance, there is an M gearshift lever with model-specific sleeve on the centre console that is used to control the special model’s six-speed manual gearbox. The Vernasca leather trim in Cognac with black M piping – also exclusive to the BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse – exudes a blend of sumptuous elegance and sporting flair. It is complemented by interior trim strips in Black high-gloss.

Pure driving pleasure meets intuitive operation and state-of-the-art driver assistance systems. 
The familiar driver focus of BMW models and the ergonomically enhanced interior design aimed at providing an engaging driving experience also come together with the BMW iDrive display and control/operation system in the BMW Z4. This system combines with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional fitted as standard in all BMW Z4 model variants to ensure intuitive vehicle operation and intelligent connectivity. It comprises a fully digital instrument cluster with customisable graphics and a control display with touchscreen operation – both with a screen diagonal of 10.25 inches – as well as the Controller on the centre console and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. The BMW Maps navigation system, a hard-drive-based multimedia system, smartphone integration and a WiFi hotspot are also part of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional package. The Hi-Fi speaker system, a hands-free facility with USB interface and an alarm system are also fitted as standard, while the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System with 12 speakers can be added as an option.

The BMW Z4 additionally offers customers a selection of driver assistance systems that are carefully geared to the enjoyment of pure driving pleasure. Front collision warning with brake intervention, Lane Departure Warning with lane return and the Speed Limit Info function with no-overtaking indicator all come as standard. Features to be found on the options list include Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, the Lane Change Warning system, Rear Collision Prevention and Crossing Traffic Warning, along with the Parking Assistant, Reversing Assist Camera and the Reversing Assistant. The BMW Head-Up Display – also available as an option – projects driving-related information onto the roadster’s windscreen.

BMW’s Z4 roadster has been updated to include fresh design accents to the exterior, with enhanced standard equipment and a wider range of options to choose from. The new features not only underscore the sporting character of the BMW Z4 but also build on its success in the Bavarian carmaker’s line-up and its important role in the company’s long history of open-top sports cars.

The BMW Z4 brings the traditional roadster experience to the modern era. With powerful engines, rear-wheel drive and a classical fabric soft-top roof, the BMW Z4 is engineered with a focus on maximum agility, dynamism and steering precision. It features a contemporary high-class interior with a driver-focused cockpit layout. Its external appearance exudes sporting potency, particularly with the M Sport package which is now included as standard for the four-cylinder models.

The third generation: six-cylinder in-line engine sets it apart.
For 20 years, the BMW Z4 has been an important part of BMW’s open top story. The third generation of went on sale in 2018 and is built by BMW Group production partner Magna Steyr Fahrzeugtechnik in Graz, Austria. The latest model launches in November 2022.

The engine line-up in the UK comprises of a four-cylinder option and a six-cylinder in-line unit that gives the BMW Z4 M40i (fuel consumption combined: 34.9 – 35.8 mpg; CO2 emissions combined: 184 – 179 g/km in the WLTP cycle) a genuinely unique selling point in its segment. The BMW M model has accounted for more than 30 per cent of worldwide sales of the roadster in recent times; in Germany the BMW Z4 M40i has posted a figure as high as 48 per cent.

Over 55,000 units of the third-generation BMW Z4 have been sold worldwide to date. The most important individual market is Germany, where approximately 26 per cent of all cars from the current model generation have been sold. Following Germany is the USA (with 17 per cent), then China, the United Kingdom and Japan.

In a generally diminishing vehicle segment, the BMW Z4 has maintained extraordinarily consistent sales volumes since it went on sale. From day one, it has been by far the highest-selling model in a hotly contested class populated exclusively by German premium brands. And it has consistently increased its market share ever since.

More dynamic than ever: M Sport as standard, BMW kidney grille with a new design.
With muscular proportions, an aesthetic guided by BMW’s current design language and a host of individual details, the exterior design of the BMW Z4 encapsulates the modern interpretation of the classical open-top sports car.

Hallmark features of the front end include the large air intakes, the LED headlights with vertically arranged light sources positioned to the outer edges, and the long bonnet, which stretches over the wheel arches. The latest design modifications shine an even brighter spotlight on the roadster’s width and powerful stance.

Playing a particularly prominent role are the exterior features of the M Sport trim level, which are is now the entry point into the Z4 range. The exterior design includes the three-section air intakes in the front apron familiar from other M models, distinctive side-sill contouring and a rear apron with bold edging at either side. The side air intakes – which guide the onrushing air to the air curtains, reducing turbulence in the wheel arches – have been remodelled.

And detail updates have been made to the design of the BMW kidney grille, which has gained significantly in visual impact. The kidneys now have a horizontal inner structure, reinforcing the impression of a wide front end. The performance-centric character of the BMW Z4 M40i is underscored by features including exterior mirror caps in Cerium Grey and trapezoidal tailpipe trims for the exhaust system.

Also contributing to the sporting authenticity of the BMW Z4’s exterior appearance are the clear surfaces of the car’s flanks (with two dynamically flowing character lines bringing structure), the large air breathers rearwards of the front wheel arches, the spoiler integrated into the boot lid, the slim, L-shaped rear lights and the eye-catching diffuser element in the rear apron. The roadster’s classical fabric soft-top is electrically operated and can also be opened or closed – within the space of 10 seconds – at the touch of a button while the car is moving at speeds of up to 31 mph.

Exclusive 19-inch M light-alloy wheels, three new exterior colours.
New additions to standard equipment include 18-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design. These bi-colour wheels are fitted with mixed-size tyres: 225/45 R18 at the front axle and 255/40 R18 at the rear.

Options now available to customers include M light-alloy wheels in 19-inch format designed exclusively for the BMW Z4. The V-spoke design, Jet Black matt finish and diamond polished rim edges bring an extremely striking and sophisticated aura to the roadster’s side view. The 19-inch M light-alloy wheels are shod with tyres in 255/35 ZR19 format at the front axle and 275/35 ZR19 at the rear.

The range of exterior paint finishes for the BMW Z4 has been carefully revised, with new and boldly expressive variants added. As well as the body colours Thundernight metallic, Portimao Blue metallic and Skyscraper Grey metallic available for the roadster for the first time, the selection also includes four other variants spanning a broad spectrum between white, black, red and grey – including the shimmering matt BMW Individual paint finish Frozen Grey metallic. The fabric soft-top of the BMW Z4 will continue to be offered in Anthracite Silver effect as an alternative to the standard black.

Also new to the options list are the M lights Shadow Line, which can be ordered in conjunction with the likewise optional Adaptive LED Headlights. The headlights’ dark inserts help imbue the front end of the car with a discreetly sporting aura. And they form a neatly judged composition with the M high-gloss Shadowline exterior trim with extended elements.

Classical sports car cockpit with M-specific touches.
The design of the BMW Z4 interior is led by a driver-focused cockpit layout, sport seats with integral head restraints, clear, forward-facing lines and the limiting of decorative surfaces to a small number of areas. The BMW Z4 sDrive20i (fuel consumption combined: 38.2 – 40.9 mpg; CO2 emissions combined: 166 – 157 g/km in the WLTP cycle) comes as standard with Vernasca leather, which can be specified in Black, Ivory White, Cognac or Magma Red.

Added to which, the classical sports car cockpit is combined with an instrument panel in Sensatec. Seat heating, the wind deflector, extended storage, the through-loading system, Park Distance Control with sensors at the front and rear, the automatically dimming rear-view mirror and two-zone automatic climate control are included as standard in all model variants. The BMW Z4 M40i is also fitted as standard with ambient lighting and M door sill finishers.

High-revving engines, sophisticated chassis technology.
Instantaneous power delivery, an enthusiastic appetite for revs, exemplary efficiency and the smoothness for which BMW is renowned are the signature characteristics of the three petrol engines also available for the new edition of the BMW Z4. The four-cylinder engine powering the BMW Z4 sDrive20i teams up as standard with a eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. The Steptronic Sport transmission comes with shift paddles on the steering wheel and a Launch Control function for traction-optimised acceleration off the line.

The exceptional status of the BMW Z4 when it comes to powertrain technology is embodied most prominently by the top-of-the-range model, whose six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology is unmatched by any rival and displays outstanding performance attributes. The 3.0-litre 340 hp unit develops peak torque of 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) and powers the BMW Z4 M40i from 0 to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds. The four-cylinder engine, with a displacement of 2.0 litres and BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, stands out with its lively performance characteristics. With maximum output of 197 hp and peak torque of 320 Nm (236 lb-ft), the BMW Z4 sDrive20i sprints from rest to 62 mph in 6.6 seconds.

Together with its compact proportions, minimised weight, low centre of gravity and almost perfect 50 : 50 weight distribution, the immense rigidity of the body and chassis structure and highly effective aerodynamics of the BMW Z4 provides the ideal platform for sporty handling that will enthuse and delight. Unlocking a compelling blend of agility and ride comfort is chassis technology which brings together a two-joint spring strut front axle and a five-link rear axle. Standard specification for all model variants also includes variable sport steering.

The M Sport suspension, now part of standard equipment, optimises driving dynamics with its firm damper and spring tuning. The BMW Z4 M40i has adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers M Sport brakes with a choice of blue- or red-painted callipers. The range-topping model is also fitted with an M Sport differential at the rear axle.

Cutting-edge driver assistance systems, intelligent connectivity.
The BMW Z4 offers customers a host of state-of-the-art driver assistance systems to enhance levels of both comfort and safety. Standard specification includes Front Collision Warning with brake intervention, Lane Departure Warning including lane return, and the Speed Limit Info function with no-overtaking indicator. Among the items on the options list are the Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, Lane Change Warning, rear collision warning, crossing traffic warning, the Parking Assistant and the Reversing Assist Camera. Also available is the BMW Head-Up Display, which projects driving information onto the windscreen.

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional ensures intuitive operation and intelligent connectivity. It brings customisable screens for the fully digital instrument cluster and control display, both of which have a diagonal of 10.25 inches. Its functionality also includes the BMW Maps navigation system, a hard-drive-based multimedia system, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, smartphone integration, a Wi-Fi hotspot and an alarm system.

Roadsters have played an important role in BMW's history and the all-new 2019 BMW Z4 is set to write another chapter in the open-top story. Since the birth of the first example, the famous BMW 328, all BMW roadsters have shared common proportions and design principles - long bonnet, low, set-back driving position, long wheelbase and short overhangs. The new BMW Z4 is no different. It shares all of those traditional principles, but takes the roadster experience to the next level with a focus on agility, dynamic performance and precise handling thanks to the high rigidity of the body structure and chassis mountings, the intelligent lightweight design and optimised aerodynamic properties. The new BMW Z4 combines its pure sporting pedigree with a wealth of highly advanced, top class equipment features on the driver assistance, operation and connectivity fronts.

The new BMW Z4 will be built at the BMW Group’s Austrian manufacturing partner, Magna Steyr Fahrzeugtechnik in Graz. Production will take place on an assembly line installed and operated to the BMW Group’s strict standards.

Exterior design
The new BMW Z4 has a low-slung, sporty, compact appearance when viewed from any angle. It is 85mm longer than its predecessor (at 4,324mm), 74mm wider (now 1,864mm) and 13mm taller (1,304mm). The shortening of the wheelbase by 26mm to 2,470mm serves to sharpen agility, as do the notably wider tracks – 1,609mm at the front (+ 98 mm) and 1,616mm at the rear (+ 57 mm).

A powerfully sculpted front apron with large air intakes, a low, broad BMW kidney grille and headlights positioned at the outer edges ensure there is no mistaking the car from the front. The new-look mesh-design BMW kidney grille combines a track-inspired honeycomb pattern with a three-dimensional structure, whose elements have a vertical arrangement reminiscent of traditional kidney grille bars.

The headlight units are another first, with the two light sources positioned one above the other for the first time. The vertical design is intercepted at the top by a diagonal accent strip with integral direction indicator.

The new BMW Z4 is equipped with LED headlights as standard, while the optional Adaptive LED headlights add a matrix function for the non-dazzling high beam and cornering lights.

The elongated bonnet with arrow-shaped contour lines directed at the kidney grille straddles the wheel arches in the “clamshell” style characteristic of classical sports cars. The joins at the bonnet’s sides merge into the flanks’ upper character line, which runs back to the tail lights. A second character line emerges from the large Air Breathers behind the front wheel arches. The spoiler and the slender, horizontally arranged light assemblies in the brand’s customary L-shape help to give the tail of the new BMW Z4 a wide, sporty appearance.

Scope for individuality: nine body and two soft-top colours.
There is a choice of one non-metallic and eight metallic shades for the car’s exterior paintwork. The soft-top roof comes in Black as standard and Anthracite with silver effect as an option. It is electrically operated and can be opened or closed in the space of ten seconds, even while travelling at speeds up to 31mph.

There will be two trim levels for the BMW Z4 in the UK, Sport and M Sport in addition to the M Performance M40i model. The Sport model features design elements in High-gloss Black on the front crossbar and the rear apron’s insert, along with 18-inch light-alloy wheels.

The highlights of the M Sport model, meanwhile, include a three section air intake for the front apron, prominent side skirt contouring, a rear apron with highly distinctive side surrounds and 18-inch M light-alloy wheels.

The new BMW Z4 M40i has a particularly sporty character with a Cerium Grey finish for the surround and front face of the mesh-design BMW kidney grille, the exterior mirror caps and other design features, plus trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes and 19-inch M light alloy wheels.

Interior: keen driver focus and an aura of class.
The cabin of the new BMW Z4 has been improved to reflect the new driving dynamics and comfort from within the car. Electroplated detailing adds to the roadster’s ambience, while the clearly structured arrangement of the controls focuses the attention even more on the driving experience.

Both driver and passenger settle into model-specific sports seats with integral head restraints. The BMW Z4 is upholstered in Vernasca leather as standard on all models and comes in a choice of four colours (Black, Magma Red, Ivory White or Cognac). Heated seats are also fitted to all BMW Z4s for the ultimate open-top driving comfort.

The optional wind deflector fits flush between the fixed rollover bars. The storage space behind the seats, the cup holders under the centre armrest and the large door pockets add further practical features. Boot capacity is 281 litres whether the soft-top is open or closed – an increase of more than 50 per cent compared to the outgoing model.

BMW M Performance model with straight-six engine.
Powering the new Z4 will be a choice of BMW's latest turbocharged petrol engines. The new BMW Z4 M40i features a straight-six unit with M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology. Its standout features include a water-cooled exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head, sharper turbocharger response and superior acceleration, and direct injection technology, which now works at increased maximum pressure of 350 bar. Drivers have a maximum output of 340hp at their disposal, plus 500Nm of peak torque.

Variable sport steering comes as standard on all model variants, while the electronically controlled dampers, M Sport brakes and electronically controlled M Sport rear differential fitted as standard to the BMW Z4 M40i make the car even nimbler on the road.

The new BMW Z4 M40i can sprint from zero to 62mph in 4.6 seconds and has a combined fuel consumption of 33.2mpg, equating to CO2 emissions of 165g/km*. The straight six engine now runs more cleanly, too, thanks to a system of emission control that comprises an enlarged, close-coupled catalytic converter and a gasoline particulate filter, and enables the new Z4 M40i to meet the extremely stringent Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard.

More power with lower emissions – the new four-cylinder engines.
The choice of engines for the new BMW Z4 is rounded off by a pair of new four-cylinder units. Both have a capacity of 2.0 litres and likewise set new standards in terms of power delivery, efficiency and emissions. The output of both engines has been increased by 13hp over their predecessors.

The engine under the bonnet of the new BMW Z4 sDrive30i delivers its maximum output of 258hp, while peak torque of 400Nm is available. The result is a zero to 62mph sprint time of 5.4 seconds. Combined fuel consumption of 37.7-38.7mpg and CO2 emissions of 138g/km* is proof of the model’s outstanding efficiency.

The maximum output of 197hp developed by the new BMW Z4 sDrive20i between 4,500 and 6,500rpm and peak torque propels the car to 62mph from rest in 6.6 seconds. The new BMW Z4 sDrive20i burns an average of 38.7-39.8mpg and produces CO2 emissions of 138g/km*.

Eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with optimised  efficiency.
All model variants of the new BMW Z4 come equipped with the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission as standard. Besides a wider ratio spread, the latest version of the automatic transmission also offers even sportier gear shifts.

The transmission also features a Launch Control function for accelerating hard from a standing start with optimised traction. The eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission fitted in the BMW Z4 M40i has been configured with M specific shift characteristics very much in tune with the straight-six engine’s power delivery.

New chassis design enhances both agility and comfort.
The chassis technology in the new BMW Z4 comprises a newly designed double-joint spring strut axle at the front and a five-link rear axle making its debut in a BMW roadster. This combination strikes just the right balance between sportiness and ride comfort. The front axle subframe and control arm mountings are extremely rigid, which lends itself to precise cornering characteristics and has a beneficial effect on the drivetrain’s acoustics. The sports car tuning of the front axle elastokinematics aids the new Z4’s steering precision at the same time as making its lateral handling characteristics more dynamic. Fitting aluminium control arms and swivel bearings has reduced unsprung masses, resulting in superior agility and efficiency.

The new rear axle likewise employs a lightweight aluminium/steel design that saves weight. The large supporting base and very rigid structure of the rear axle subframe as well as the shear panels used for connecting it to the body result in extremely precise wheel guidance. All of which makes it possible to blend agile handling with a high level of ride comfort.

The car’s impressively sporty handling characteristics are further aided by a powerful lightweight braking system and the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, whose wealth of features includes the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) and Start-Off Assistant.

The Performance Control function also included as standard gives the new BMW Z4 even nimbler handling by varying the distribution of drive torque to the rear wheels according to the situation at hand.

M Sport differential, Adaptive M Sport suspension, M Sport brakes and high-performance tyres.
The Adaptive M Sport suspension, M Sport brakes and M Sport differential (all part of standard specification for the new BMW Z4 M40i, together with high-performance tyres) elevate the car’s sporty handling abilities to even greater heights. They are only available on M Sport models (with M Sport differential only available on sDrive30i M sport) as part of the M Sport Plus package. With these chassis systems on board, the differences in the car’s responses when moving between the COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ modes with the Driving Experience Control switch are particularly noticeable.

As well as lowering the car’s ride height by ten millimetres, the Adaptive M Sport suspension also adds electronically controlled dampers, whose operating characteristics can assume a more comfortable or more dynamic bias depending on the mode selected with the Driving Experience Control switch.

The electronically controlled M Sport rear differential gives the handling of the new BMW Z4 an even sharper sporting edge. An electric motor generates a locking effect that limits speed equalisation between the inside and outside rear wheel when cornering, making it possible to power out of bends with remarkable dynamic verve.

The active differential lock also gives the car greater assurance when darting through corners, and aids ride comfort and traction, too. The variable distribution of drive torque between the left and right-hand rear wheels nips any understeer or oversteer in the bud without the need to brake.

Innovations to enhance driving pleasure, comfort and safety.
The options list contains all sorts of different ways to customise the new BMW Z4 so that it reflects the owner’s personal style. The list of options includes Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Driving Assistant systems, as well as a Parking Assistant including Reversing Assistant. The new BMW Z4 is also the first roadster to be made available (as an option) with the BMW Head-Up Display.

Safety can be given a further boost by opting for the Adaptive LED headlights, whose pioneering matrix technology for the high beam allows range to be increased while preventing other road users from being dazzled. The high beam is divided into four LED segments, which can be activated and deactivated independently of one another as the traffic situation demands, and when travelling at speeds above 44mph. The instant the front mounted camera on the new BMW Z4 detects an oncoming vehicle or a vehicle in front, low beam only will be used to illuminate the area around the vehicle. The other features of the Adaptive LED headlights include the adaptive and cornering light functions, which use an additional LED module. Finally, the low-beam range is increased in motorway driving to optimise illumination of the road ahead.

With the optional Comfort or Comfort Plus packages fitted, the soft-top can be operated using the car key. The ambient lighting, fitted as standard, brings a particularly atmospheric mood to the cabin. LED fibre-optic guides light up the instrument panel’s accent strips on either side of the steering wheel and provide indirect illumination of the centre console’s edging, accentuating the areas of the cockpit of most importance for focused driving. The colour and brightness of the lighting effect are adjusted in the iDrive menu.

The BMW Z4 is fitted as standard with an advanced hi-fi speaker system which includes a total of ten speakers and output of 205 watts. For an even more impressive aural experience, there is the harman/kardon surround sound system complete with digital amplifier, 12 speakers and 464-watt total output which is available as part of the Technology package.

The new BMW Z4 comes as standard with bespoke M Sport seats including integral head restraints. The seat rails have been extended in length by 23mm over those in the predecessor model, allowing the seats to be adjusted to the ideal fore/aft position. Electric seat adjustment with memory function is optionally available for both seats (standard on M40i), allowing their fore/aft position, height and tilt as well as the backrest angle to be altered and stored using a control pad on the outer edge of the seat cushion. The M sports seats also include electro-pneumatic backrest width adjustment to optimise lateral support through high-speed corners.

The practicality of the new BMW Z4 has been increased by features such as a storage space behind the seats with a retaining net, large cup holders under the centre armrest cover (which folds open in two sections with a longitudinal split) and roomy door pockets.

The boot capacity is 281 litres (with the soft-top open or closed), an increase of more than 50 per cent compared to the previous Z4. An optional through-loading system extends the possibilities for handling various transportation tasks during everyday use and when going away on trips.

Innovative systems to help drivers stay in lane, park and reverse.
The highly advanced nature of the new BMW Z4 is further underlined by the class-leading variety of driver assistance systems on offer. Collision Warning and the Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function come as standard, as does the Lane Departure Warning system.

The list of options includes Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, the Speed Limit Info system with No Passing Info display, distance information, the Lane Change Warning System, plus Rear Collision Prevention and Cross-Traffic Alert. These functions can be purchased together in a Driving Assistant Package.

Elsewhere, the BMW Head-Up Display, which projects driving-related information onto the windscreen and therefore straight into the driver’s field of view, is available for a roadster for the first time. The only system of its kind in this segment, it shows the driver the car’s speed in figures, along with status indicators from the driver assistance systems, route guidance instructions and lane recommendations from the navigation system, Check Control messages, and in-car entertainment details, such as the radio station or track title. Full¬ colour graphics are used to convey the relevant information.

Active Park Distance Control and the rear view camera come to the driver’s aid when manoeuvring or parking. These two systems both form part of the Parking Assistant, which takes care of steering, accelerating and braking during parking manoeuvres, and includes a reversing camera. The range of functions also includes the Reversing Assistant, which offers the highly convenient option of automated reversing in situations where there is little margin for error or the driver does not have a clear view. To do this, the system stores the steering movements for the section of road the car has just driven forward along. It then traces these last forward movements when reversing and keeps the car on exactly the same path for a distance of up to 50 metres. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedals and keep an eye on the area around the car.

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional offered as standard for the new BMW Z4 brings a new display & operating system and the ultimate in connectivity together into a superb all-round package. Its ensemble of fully digital displays consists of a high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and the Control Display in the centre console, each of which has a screen diagonal of 10.25-inches. The BMW Live Cockpit Professional also features an adaptive navigation system, a hard-drive-based multimedia system, two USB ports, plus Bluetooth and Wi-Fi interfaces.

The inclusion of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional means that the car benefits from the most recent incarnation of the display & operating system, powered by the brand new BMW Operating System 7.0. Its displays are digital and geared even more closely to the driver’s personal needs to optimise attention levels. The main menu of the Control Display allows the driver to configure up to ten pages, each showing two to four pads (tiles) with live content. Both the content and the visuals are personalised to an even greater degree, as illustrated by vehicle graphics that match the actual model colour and equipment line. The Control Display graphics adapt depending on the operating method, and the voice control system based on natural language understanding reaches new heights.

Always up to date thanks to Remote Software Upgrade.
The Remote Software Upgrade feature keeps the new BMW Z4 up to date with the latest software. All updates will occur either via the BMW Connected app on a smartphone or for smaller updates directly into the car over the air using its built-in SIM card. Installation is every bit as simple as a smartphone update. The contents of the upgrades vary, from security and quality enhancements to new software services and improved vehicle functions.

Connected Navigation with new digital services.
“Connected Navigation” encompasses a number of digital services designed to turn seamless and contextual route planning both inside and outside the BMW into an even more sophisticated experience. Drivers of the new BMW Z4 will be able to send destinations from various apps straight to their car’s navigation system. The most important destinations will be stored in BMW Connected and synchronised with the car, so that key addresses can be accessed from any device at any time. One particularly helpful new feature is the Parking Space Assistant, which proposes various parking options to the driver in good time before the destination is reached. This service includes providing information on the nearest multi-storey car park as well as proposing routes offering a particularly good chance of finding a parking spot close to the destination. The existing On-Street Parking Information has been intelligently incorporated into the new assistant’s range of functions.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant
Within the new BMW Z4, drivers and passengers will be joined by the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, an intelligent, digital character that responds to the prompt “Hey BMW”. This will mark the start of a new era for the BMW Group in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate their car and access its functions and information simply by speaking.

BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant learns routines and habits, and is subsequently able to apply them in the appropriate context. The system helps the driver, learns their preferences and is familiar with their favoured settings – e.g. for the seat heating or the places they drive to frequently using the navigation system (“Take me home”). One unique feature over other digital assistants is that drivers can give the Intelligent Personal Assistant a name to create even greater individuality and personality. Familiarisation with the vehicle’s functions will be learnt and the ability to operate them as required. Saying “Hey BMW, I’m cold” will prompt the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant to adjust the temperature inside the car accordingly.

The arrival of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant gives the ability to explain all sorts of different functions (“How does the High Beam Assistant work?”), provide current status information (“Is the oil level okay?”) and help answer questions (“What messages do I have?”).

The Intelligent Personal Assistant comes in particularly useful during every day driving (“Hey BMW, look for the nearest fuel station on our route”). To make navigation particularly easy, drivers can give allow access to their calendar and contacts, which will enable the assistant to find parking spaces at the destination, provide information on traffic jams along the route and remind the driver when they need to set off.

The assistant will benefit from constant technical upgrades and be able to learn more and more preferences and favoured settings. The assistant takes further strides forward with every command given, every question asked and every setting made.

BMW Digital Key: turning a smartphone into a car key.
As part of the Comfort Access option, the BMW Digital Key employs Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to allow the new BMW Z4 to be locked and unlocked from a smartphone, dispensing with the need for a conventional car key. The smartphone simply has to be held up to the door handle to open the vehicle and, once inside, the engine can be started as soon as it has been placed in the Wireless Charging or smartphone tray. Munich/Paris. The BMW 3 Series Sedan is the Munich-based premium carmaker’s most successful model range worldwide and embodies the core of the BMW brand. The world premiere of the seventh-generation sports sedan is the highlight of the Mondial de l’Automobile 2018 show in Paris. And it will celebrate its global debut alongside an array of other new models at the press conference taking place at 9.00 a.m. CET on Tuesday, 2 October 2018. The venue for the press conference will be BMW’s stand upstairs in Hall 5.

At 4.00 p.m. CET the same day, also at the BMW stand, media representatives will be given exclusive insights into the design highlights, new technological features and innovations in the field of connectivity which shape the character of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan. BMW has a long and illustrious history of building two seat sports cars and now, more than 80 years since the first BMW roadster went on sale, the latest has been unveiled, the BMW Z4 M40i First Edition.

Based on the BMW Concept Z4 presented at Concours d’Elegance 2017 in Pebble Beach, the new edition of the roadster inspires not only with the agility, precision and dynamic handling characteristics that are typical of BMW M Performance models, but also with particularly sophisticated design and equipment features, including a body paintwork in Frozen Orange metallic.

The central sitting position for the driver, the low centre of gravity, perfectly balanced 50:50 axle load distribution, wide tracks and a compact wheelbase form the ideal prerequisites for a dynamic drive.

The BMW Z4 M40i First Edition comes with a powerful 340hp, straight six-cylinder engine and a sports suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Sport braking system and an electronically controlled M Sport differential in the rear axle transmission. The BMW M Performance automobile takes a mere 4.6 seconds to sprint from a standstill to 62mph.

Vertically aligned headlights, the BMW kidney grille sporting a mesh design, the bonnet stretching sports car-like over the wheels, large air breathers on the front wheel arches and the distinctive spoiler integrated into the rear lid all contribute towards the characteristic look of the new BMW Z4. The design of the interior also places the focus on the sportiness of the new BMW Z4. Forward-oriented lines underscore the driver-oriented cockpit styling. Likewise, the clearly structured arrangement of all control elements enhances the focus on the driving experience inside the new BMW Z4.

Moreover, for a perfect start into a new roadster era, the new BMW Z4 M40i First Edition offers specific design and equipment features that add exclusive accents to the car’s sporty flair. The expressive body paintwork in Frozen Orange metallic is combined with an electrically operated textile soft top in anthracite with silver effect, the BMW Individual High Gloss Shadow Line, black exterior mirror caps and 19-inch light alloy wheels boasting a bicolour, double spoke design.

The interior of the edition model comprises the Vernasca black leather trim with decorative stitching, electrically adjustable seats with memory function, the option ambient light and the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System. The world premiere of the BMW Z4 M40i First Edition in Pebble Beach is a taster of the forthcoming on-road debut of the new roadster generation. BMW will announce all details of further engine variants, technical innovations and the diverse equipment features of the two-seater on 19 September 2018. This will be followed a short time later by the trade fair premiere of the new BMW Z4 at the Mondial de l’Automobile (4 – 14 October 2018) in Paris. The worldwide market launch will commence in the spring of 2019.

The interplay of classical proportions and state-of-the-art technology defines the unmistakable character of the BMW Z4 – and now an updated version of the Roadster is ready for action, armed with a raft of additional powertrain and equipment innovations. The new BMW Z4 represents a time-honoured and yet alluringly contemporary interpretation of the traditional roadster concept. New exterior features, detailed interior refinements, the new Design Pure Traction equipment package, the new entry-level sDrive18i model and the latest additions to the range of BMW ConnectedDrive features all provide fresh impetus and lend the BMW Roadster even greater appeal and individuality.

The new BMW Z4 takes to the stage 25 years after the legendary BMW Z1. That Roadster turned heads when it was unveiled at the 1987 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt – not only on account of its revolutionary door concept, but also thanks to its agile and precisely controllable handling. With the BMW Z1 began the latest chapter in the history of BMW Roadsters – a tradition which stretches back to the 1930s and reached the first of many high points with the BMW 328 (winner of the 1940 Mille Miglia) and BMW 507 from 1955. The BMW Z3 and BMW Z8 triggered a fresh wave of excitement for the classical open-top two-seater concept in the 1990s. And they also paved the way for the first-generation BMW Z4 and its successor, the brand’s first Roadster fitted with a retractable hardtop roof.

Design: classical proportions infused with modern character.

The success of modern-day BMW Roadsters is rooted in the rigorous execution of a concept, a process which has left its mark on both the design and the driving properties of each car and is clearly recognisable in the new BMW Z4. The sweeping bonnet, long wheelbase, low beltline and low-slung rear end play a more vivid and uncompromising part in shaping its appearance than is evident with any of its segment rivals. The low seating position just ahead of the rear axle gives the driver and passenger a particularly intense experience of the longitudinal and lateral forces working on the rear wheels. This sense of being “part of the car” also allows the driver to grade the amount of power he’s feeding through the rear axle with sensitivity and precision. That’s the recipe for roadster feeling, BMW-style. 

The hardtop roof also blends seamlessly into the car’s form. As it closes, it seals a smoothly flowing roofline, while large window surfaces optimise
all-round visibility and the feeling of space inside the car. Once opened, the two roof elements are accommodated, one on top of the other, in a compact package inside the Roadster’s road-hugging rear. The A-pillars – painted an understated black – also underline the low-slung silhouette of the new BMW Z4, especially when the roof is open. The optional BMW Individual hardtop – available in the two contrast colours Black non-metallic and Glacier Silver metallic – provides a feast for the eyes when the roof is closed. The hardtop can be opened at the touch of a button while the car is moving at up to 40 km/h (25 mph) in an automated process lasting 19 seconds.

The distinctive twin circular headlights team up with the broad BMW kidney grille to form a roadster-specific interpretation of the brand’s signature front-end look. The standard bi-xenon headlights of the new BMW Z4 have an extremely slim design and extend well into the front wheel arches. They feature LED light rings which emit daytime driving light in the brand’s hallmark style. Added to which, the light sources now have a strikingly three-dimensional design which accentuates the intricate technology of the headlights. Cutting across the tops of the headlights are LED accent lights, whose metal insert bears BMW lettering. The integrated turn signal indicators have chrome-coloured surrounds, which lend further emphasis to the sophisticated character of the light units. Plus, a newly designed, tapered surround for the side indicators adds a dynamic sweep to the gills on the front side sections of the car.

Striking touches: new paint finishes, Design Pure Traction equipment package, additional light-alloy wheels and the M Sport package.

A total of 11 external paint finishes are available for the new BMW Z4, including the new Mineral Grey metallic, Glacier Silver metallic and Valencia Orange metallic, which can only be ordered together with the Design Pure Traction option. This new equipment package lends the Roadster an extremely lively aura; the interior, for example, boasts an energy-charged contrast of black and orange. The bespoke Alcantara door panel trim, like the lower section of the instrument panel, comes in orange. The black leather seats have contrast stitching in Valencia Orange and an accent stripe running down the central section of the backrests and seat cushions. This stripe is likewise orange and is flanked by two thin white lines. The door panel trim and lower section of the instrument panel can also be specified in black as an option. Another exclusive element of the Design Pure Traction package is the metal weave trim strip, which can be combined with further decorative elements in high-gloss black for the door openers and the gearshift or selector lever. This new equipment package replaces the previously available Design Pure Impulse and is also available in combination with other exterior paint colours as an option.  

New interior additions to standard specification include high-gloss black surrounds for the central air vents and the iDrive control system’s folding Control Display, which comes as part of the optional Professional navigation system. Elsewhere, exquisite Fineline Anthracite wood has been added to the selection of interior trim strips available as an option for the new BMW Z4. The BMW Z4 sDrive28i, BMW Z4 sDrive35i and BMW Z4 sDrive35is are offered with Kansas leather trim, which is available as an option for the two other models.

New variants have been added to the range of optional light-alloy wheels as well, including newly designed 17-inch and 18-inch wheels in V-spoke design, both of which will be combined with mixed tyres.

The engaging character of the Roadster as a driver’s tool is given particular emphasis by the likewise optional M Sport package, which contributes M Sport suspension, 18-inch M light-alloy wheels and an M aerodynamics package with large air intakes in the front wing and a rear bumper inlay painted Anthracite metallic. Bringing an extra dose of sporting flair into the interior, meanwhile, are features such as sports seats, an M leather steering wheel, M driver’s footrest, M door sill finishers and an anthracite-coloured roof liner. The Aluminium Carbon trim strip, leather M gear lever knob and grey dials for the instrument cluster lend the finishing touches to the interior ambience. The new BMW Z4 sDrive35is comes as standard with a model-specific version of the M Sport package.

Engines: BMW TwinPower Turbo technology at five output levels.

The BMW Z4 will be available with a larger, five-strong line-up of petrol engines from launch, and customers will be able to choose from three four-cylinder and two six-cylinder powerplants. Their most significant shared feature is BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, which ensures an exceptionally effective balance between driving pleasure and fuel consumption throughout the output range. All variants of the new BMW Z4 already meet – as standard – the stipulations of the EU6 exhaust emissions standard due to come into force in 2014. 

The BMW Z4 sDrive18i takes to the stage as the new entry-level model. It is powered by a 2.0-litre engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology which develops maximum output of 115 kW/156 hp at 5,000 rpm. The new variant of the four-cylinder unit delivers peak torque of 240 Newton metres (177 lb-ft) between 1,250 and 4,400 rpm. The BMW Z4 sDrive18i is fitted as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, but an eight-speed sports automatic can also be ordered as an option. The new model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.9 seconds (automatic: 8.1 seconds) and hits a top speed of 221 km/h / 137 mph (220 km/h / 136.5 mph). Average fuel consumption for the BMW Z4 sDrive18i in the EU test cycle is 6.8 litres per 100 kilometres (41.5 mpg imp) with both the manual and automatic gearbox. CO2 emissions stand at 159 grams per kilometre.

The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology package for the new BMW Z4 sDrive18i includes twin-scroll turbocharging, High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control and Double-Vanos continuously variable camshaft control. An identical version of this technology package is also used in the engines – likewise 2.0-litre units – under the bonnet of the BMW Z4 sDrive20i and BMW Z4 sDrive28i. These engines can also be ordered with an eight-speed sports automatic gearbox with shift paddles on the steering wheel as an alternative to the standard-fitted six-speed manual. The automatic has been optimised to deliver even better acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph).

The existing engine variants – the sDrive20i, sDrive28i, sDrive35i and sDrive35is – retain their places in the range.

Extensive comfort-enhancing equipment.

The new BMW Z4 delivers the driving pleasure customers have come to expect from the brand, fulfilling the desire for both sporting ability and comfort. Drivers can use the standard-fitted Driving Experience Control switch to select a configuration to suit the situation at hand and satisfy personal preferences. COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ modes can all be called up using the rocker switch on the centre console. As well as adjusting the responses of the engine and DSC stability system, the different modes also alter the shift characteristics of the automatic gearbox, the responses of the Servotronic function and the mapping of the electronically controlled dampers, if these items are specified. These modes allow the driver to choose from a selection of distinctive and clearly differentiated set-ups for the car. 

Other items of equipment fitted as standard are xenon headlights, air conditioning, a heated glass rear window, the Soft Close Automatic function for the boot lid and runflat tyres with a run-flat indicator. The BMW Business radio – including CD player, AUX-IN socket and six loudspeakers – is a standard feature in all the variants of the Roadster, while customers can also choose from options including the BMW Professional radio and the Professional hi-fi-system with 14 loudspeakers. The similarly optional Professional navigation system enables high-resolution map graphics – complete with 3D view – on the 8.8-inch iDrive monitor. The navigation data for the system is stored on an in-car hard disk, which also provides 12 GB of capacity for personal music collections.

The range of driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive has also expanded once again. The new BMW Z4 can be equipped with features such as a rain sensor, Adaptive Headlights and High Beam Assistant. Cruise control with braking function and Park Distance Control with sensors at the front and rear of the car are also available. If the Professional navigation system is specified, the ConnectedDrive Services option allows use of internet-based information and entertainment services inside the car. This system must be fitted to enable access to the BMW Online portal and apps using the Control Display and iDrive Controller. The Real Time Traffic Information function is also on hand, supplying the driver with congestion warnings and diversion recommendations in real time. Apple iPhone owners can use BMW apps, for example, to receive web radio stations, display Facebook and Twitter posts on the monitor and ask for them to be read out. The range of BMW ConnectedDrive features available for the new BMW Z4 also includes BMW TeleServices, BMW Remote Services, Concierge Services and Intelligent Emergency Call with automatic vehicle location and accident severity detection.

January pricelist - BMW Z4

BMW has revealed a new version of the popular Z4 roadster which will go on sale in March, 2013 – 80 years after we first offered such an exciting concept. Currently BMW’s only two seat drop-top to be offered, the BMW Z4 now comes with a new entry-level sDrive18i, while at the same time the Pure Traction Design package boasts a level of sophistication and high specification not seen on a Z4 before.

The new BMW Z4 sDrive18i engine heralds a new entry point into BMW Z4 ownership. Priced from £27,610 OTR this new derivative uses a de-tuned version of an existing 2.0-litre four-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged engine. Producing 156hp at 5,000rpm from its 1,997cc powerplant the car is capable of zero to 62mph time of 7.9 seconds before going on to a top speed of 137mph. It manages to do this while still recording 41.5mpg and emissions of just 159g/km.

Some of the existing engines have also received enhancements to improve their overall performance. The BMW Z4 sDrive20i comes with a 184hp engine that achieves 41.5mpg and 159g/km CO2. The model is the most popular derivative of Z4 currently accounting for 80 per cent of sales.

Further up the range and the four-cylinder twin-scroll turbocharged sDrive28i, and the six-cylinder twin-turbocharged sDrive35i and the sDrive35is offer customers greater performance courtesy of their respective 245hp, 306hp and 340hp power outputs. All cars are rated at an electronically-limited 155mph top speed. 

Transmitting the power to the road is a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. Customers can also specify an eight-speed automatic with gear shift paddles located on the steering wheel, while buyers of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is have a seven-speed Double Clutch Transmission, again with gear shift paddles, as standard. 

EfficientDynamics
All of the latest BMW Z4s come as standard with facets of BMW’s award-winning EfficientDynamics programme. Technologies that improve engine performance while enhancing economy and cutting emissions include Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering with Servotronic, Reduced Rolling Resistance Tyres, on-demand control of the engine’s ancillaries and Optimum Shift Indicator on manual transmission cars. The BMW Z4 also adheres to a philosophy of lightweight construction with the front suspension and subframe being largely made from aluminium.

A new look
Design wise the winning formula of the BMW Z4 styling has only had minor enhancements mid-life. The headlights now include white LED corona rings and a white ‘eyebrow’ with additional chrome detailing, while in profile the side gill features chrome detailing and LED side repeater lights.

Building on the striking looks of the BMW Z4 is the introduction of the Pure Traction Design package. Available exclusively in Valencia Orange with an optional black contrast roof the model also comes with Sport seats in Alcantara and leather with contrast stitching, Anthracite headlining and a unique metal weave interior trim. Should a customer wish to have another exterior colour this can be offered though. The Pure Traction Design package costs from £550 up to £2,240 depending on the model within the Z4 range it is order on. SE and M Sport derivatives will continue to be offered.

Standard equipment across all models now includes DAB radio, Xenon headlights, Bluetooth, USB connectivity and Sport multi-function steering wheel. All models apart from the new entry-level sDrive18i SE come with Kansas leather upholstery as standard. Three new colours of Mineral Grey, Glacier Silver and Valencia Orange are offered while two new styles of alloy wheel, 17-inch and an 18-inch V-spoke styling wheel are available.

These enhancements build on an already strong offering. The BMW Z4 was the first roadster in BMW’s history to come with a two-piece, electro-hydraulically operated Retractable Hard-Top roof that can be raised or lowered in 20 seconds at speeds of up to 20mph. The new roadster was also the first vehicle to be offered with Adaptive M Suspension. Electronically controlled dampers offer three different configurations while the ride height is lowered by 10mm for a more dynamic drive.

The standard Drive Performance Control function was another first and this allows the driver to alter, depending on model specification, the throttle and steering response, level of ride comfort, Dynamic Stability Control response and, on automatic or Double Clutch Transmission cars, gear change times.

The new BMW Z4 goes on sale March, 2013 with prices starting from £27,610 OTR rising to £45,795 OTR.

Munich. With its athletic design, agile handling and powerful engine, the BMW Z4 has achieved outstanding success in the class of premium roadsters, having been the worldwide segment leader in 2009 and 2010. Towards the end of the year, the BMW Z4 is to feature another technological highlight: a completely newly developed 2-litre engine with TwinPower Turbo technology and an output of 176 kW/240 bhp. Its name is BMW Z4sDrive28i.

Thanks to TwinPower Turbo technology, the new supercharged 4-cylinder petrol engine with all-aluminium crankcase, already available in the BMW X1 xDrive28i, provides increased torque, improved performance and much reduced fuel consumption  and emission levels as compared to the existing 6-cylinder induction engine model BMW Z4 sDrive30. The absolute figures, including those for the driving performance of the new BMW Roadster, are expected to be finalised mid-year.

This newly developed engine in the BMW Z4 sDrive 28i uses the globally unique BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. In other words it is fitted with High Precision Injection as well as a turbocharger powered via two exhaust ducts. Other elements of this progressive engine package include the variable camshaft control system double VANOS and the fully variable valve control system VALVETRONIC.

The new 2-litre petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology in the BMW Z4 sDrive28i thus sets a further milestone in the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy.

Nearly 80 years after the first BMW roadster went on sale, the latest and most powerful of the current generation Z4 has been launched in the UK. The new BMW Z4 sDrive35is features a host of innovations including a two-piece, electro-hydraulically operated Retractable Hard-Top roof that can be raised or lowered in 20 seconds. It also has Adaptive M Sport Suspension as standard.  This system offers electronically controlled dampers that offer three different configurations from Normal to Sport+ so a driver can fine tune the car’s set-up. The adaptive system features a ride height 10mm lower than the standard car for a more dynamic drive.

The standard Drive Dynamic Control function is another feature on the new range flagship and allows the driver to alter the chassis configuration to suit their needs.  Now the vehicle has the capability to morph between comfortable yet sporty cruiser through to outright performance car.  The throttle and steering response, level of ride comfort, Dynamic Stability Control Plus response and, on automatic or Double Clutch Transmission cars, gear change times can all be altered.

Drivetrain
To underscore the potency of the latest BMW Z4 the model comes powered by an advanced version of an International Engine of the Year winner in the shape of the 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged engine.  The 340hp BMW Z4 sDrive35is powers its way from zero to 62mph in 4.8 seconds before going on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph.  This strong performance credentials are matched in terms of economy and emissions.  The Z4 sDrive35is records a combined consumption figure of 31.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 210g/km.  

Transmitting the power to the road is a seven-speed Double Clutch Transmission, again with gear shift paddles located on the steering wheel. The gearshift response times have been accelerated on the new Z4 flagship for a more sporting gear change compared to the existing transmission. This gearbox is teamed with a launch control system which allows drivers to experience the maximum acceleration performance of the car with ease.

Increased comfort and practicality
BMW’s roadster is larger than its E85 predecessor (built 2002 to 2008) measuring 148mm longer at 4,239mm and 9mm wider at 1,790mm, and this results in greater interior space and luggage capacity.  With the roof up, headroom has been increased by 44mm while the greater car width and design enhancements have led to 20mm more shoulder room and 43mm more elbow room.

Driver visibility in the BMW Z4 has also been improved.  All round visibility is up by 14 per cent while, courtesy of the four electric windows creating a larger glasshouse, side visibility is up 40 per cent.  The Retractable Hard-Top roof features a glass rear window and this too improves visibility by 52 per cent.

The most recent incarnation of iDrive is showcased on the Z4 sDrive35is.  The optional BMW Professional Multimedia Navigation system features a hard disc drive capable of 12Gb of audio file storage and BMW ConnectedDrive functionality.  A vehicle specified with this system also comes with eight programmable Favourite buttons as system shortcuts.

Market
The latest BMW Z4 was introduced last year to compete head-on with the two big biggest sellers in the UK premium roadster market – the Mercedes SLK and the Audi TT Roadster.  According to BMW’s own market research one of the key reasons for selecting the Mercedes over the previous BMW Z4 was the added benefit of a folding metal roof.  The majority of buyers in this segment also craved a degree more comfort and practicality.  The designers and engineers of the new BMW Z4 took these considerations on board so that it should now appeal to a broader church, while at the same time not diluting the range’s previous excellent driving dynamics.

For the fifth year in a row the BMW 3 Series has been awarded the What Car? ‘Best Compact Executive’ crown beating off stiff competition from…..other members of the BMW 3 Series range.  It was a clean sweep in the Compact Executive category with the 316d ES, 320d SE and the 330d SE Saloons all winning their price category, but in the end it was the 320d that reigned victorious, winning the overall title.

The BMW 3 Series dominated the Compact Executive category in recognition of it leading the pack and remaining miles ahead of the competition.  With its EfficientDynamics package making the 3 Series the most economical car in its class it appeals to both business and personal customers.   However, it was not just the BMW 3 Series’ outstanding economy that stood out for the judges; it was commended for being smooth and refined whilst still offering sparkling performance, setting the standard for sheer driving pleasure.

BMW has announced today that the Z4 sDrive35i is to be offered with an extra ‘s’.  This range-topper sharpens the roadster’s sporting pedigree by offering an even higher level of performance and adds to its sleek, sporty looks with some extra styling touches.

Premiering at the Detroit Motor Show in January and on sale in the UK in March 2010, the new BMW Z4 sDrive35is gains an extra 34hp over the standard car, taking output to 340hp. The 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine with its twin turbocharger technology and High Precision Direct Injection increases maximum torque to 450Nm with an extra 50Nm of torque available in the upper gears for extra power when overtaking.  This is achieved by an extra short-time boost in turbo pressure.

All of this extra power results in an improved zero to 62mph time of 4.8 seconds, down 0.3 seconds from the current Z4 sDrive35i, while top speed is electronically-limited to 155mph. The implementation of BMW’s award-winning EfficientDynamics technologies, such as Brake Energy Regeneration, newly revised Electric Power Steering and on-demand use of ancillary systems, has meant consumption and emissions figures have remained unchanged, from the current twin turbo model, at 31.4mpg and 210g/km CO2.

The BMW Z4 sDrive35is comes with BMW’s seven-speed Double Clutch Transmission as standard, allowing customers to take maximum advantage of this exceptional power plant.  The gearshift response times have been accelerated for a more sporting gear change compared to the existing transmission. This gearbox is teamed with a launch control system which allows drivers to experience the maximum acceleration performance of the car with ease.

A Sports exhaust for enhanced engine breathing and tuned to make an exhilarating sound also features. The new exhaust system was specifically developed for the flagship Z4 and has special acoustic flaps and a modified silencer to ensure a lusty performance car sound.

Adaptive M Sport suspension is standard for the BMW Z4 sDrive35is, giving a 10mm lower ride height than the standard Z4 and comes with variable damper control for enhanced ride characteristics. However, the most distinctive feature to the casual observer will be the new Z4’s bespoke M aerodynamic body styling package. A revised front spoiler configuration with contrasting matt aluminium trim in the side air intakes, gives a more aggressive look to the car. This aggression flows to the side of the vehicle where specially designed18-inch light alloy wheels come as standard. At the rear a dual section diffuser with an Anthracite insert differentiates the car from standard Z4s.

Inside, Sport seats, door sill finishers with M designation, Anthracite headlining, Aluminium carbon interior trim and an M Sport multi-function leather steering wheel with shift paddles complete the package.

The BMW Z4 sDrive35is costs £43,885 OTR (based on March 2010, 17.5 per cent VAT).

M Sport specification for the BMW Z4
The launch of the flagship Z4 coincides with the introduction of the M Sport models. Customers can now choose to have any Z4 engine paired with the M aerodynamic body styling,18-inch M light alloy wheels, Anthracite head lining, M leather gearknob and M designation door sills. For added support Sport seats, featuring part electric adjustment, are also fitted, whilst all Z4 M Sport models come with leather upholstery as standard.

M Sport specification is available on all models within the BMW Z4 range. It will go on sale from March, 2010 and pricing will be confirmed in the new year.

BMW has won two accolades at the Scottish Car of the Year Awards 2009, voted for by the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers (ASMW).  The Z4 picked up the award for Scottish Drop Top of the Year 2009, whilst BMW has been crowned the winner in the Eco category for its EfficientDynamics programme.*

With its sleek lines and incredible performance the BMW Z4 fiercely beat off its competitors to scoop its award.  Its combination of striking looks and innovative technologies, together with an electro-hydraulically operated Retractable Hard-Top roof and a starting price of £28,650 OTR, made it clear to see why the Z4 was such an appealing choice.

1. The new BMW Z4: Introduction

BMW has a long and illustrious history of building two seat sports cars. From the very first 3/15 PA Wartburg Roadster in 1930, BMW has produced highly distinctive roadsters. With their long bonnet, setback glasshouse, front engine rear-wheel-drive configuration and with the two seats positioned close to the rear axle, every BMW roadster lives up to the ultimate driving machine promise.

Now, nearly 80 years after the first BMW roadster went on sale, the latest has been launched in the UK. Featuring a host of innovations never before featured on a BMW of this type, the new BMW Z4 is the first to come with a two-piece, electro-hydraulically operated Retractable Hard-Top roof that can be raised or lowered in
20 seconds. The new BMW Z4 is also the first roadster to be offered with Adaptive M Sport Suspension. This system features a ride height 10mm lower than the standard car for a more dynamic drive. Adaptive M Sport Suspension also comes with electronically controlled dampers that offer three different configurations from Normal to Sport+ so a driver can fine tune the car’s set-up.

The standard Drive Dynamic Control function is another BMW roadster first and allows the driver to alter the chassis configuration to suit their needs. Now the vehicle has the capability to morph between comfortable yet sporty cruiser through to outright performance car. Depending on model specification, the throttle and steering response, level of ride comfort, Dynamic Stability Control response and, on automatic or Double Clutch Transmission cars, gear change times can all be altered.

The strong performance credentials are matched in terms of economy and emissions.

The Z4 sDrive35i records a combined consumption figure of 30.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 219g/km. It is worth nothing that the sDrive35i can be specified with a Double Clutch Transmission and a vehicle so equipped records a faster zero to 62mph time of 5.1 seconds, 31.4mpg consumption and lower CO2 emissions at 210g/km.

Joining this model in the launch line-up are the Z4 sDrive23i and the Z4 sDrive30i. Both use the same magnesium aluminium alloy engine with Double VANOS and VALVETRONIC technology, but with varying capacities. The 2.5-litre entry-level
Z4 sDrive23i produces 204hp to achieve its zero to 62mph time of 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 151mph. In contrast the Z4 sDrive23i is capable of a combined 33.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 199g/km.

The BMW Z4 sDrive30i comes with a 3.0-litre powerplant producing 258hp. The six-cylinder engine records a zero to 62mph time of 5.8 seconds before going on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. Like the Z4 sDrive23i, the
Z4 sDrive30i posts impressive combined consumption and CO2 emission figures, recording 33.2mpg and 199g/km.

Customers of the Z4 sDrive23i and the Z4 sDrive30i who prefer the characteristics of an automatic can specify a six-speed Sport Automatic transmission featuring gear change paddles on the steering wheel. The latest BMW ‘art car’
The new BMW Z4 has been launched worldwide with the assistance of South African-born artist Robin Rhode. He used a specially prepared version of the new BMW Z4 as a paint brush to help create a 1,800m2 piece of installation art that formed the basis of the worldwide advertising and marketing campaign. The latest in BMW's long and successful roadster family has been revealed. The
all-new BMW Z4 will go on sale in May 2009 and features a host of innovations
never before showcased during BMW's 75 years of roadster heritage.


The BMW Z4 is the first to come with a two-piece, electro-hydraulically
operated Retractable Hard-Top roof that can be raised or lowered in 20 seconds.
The new roadster is also the first vehicle to be offered with Adaptive M
Suspension. Electronically controlled dampers offer three different
configurations and lower the ride height by up to 10mm for a more dynamic
drive. By way of comparison, the Sport+ setting of the new car is comparable to
the outgoing Z4's standard ride comfort level.


The standard Drive Dynamic Control function is another first and allows the
driver to alter, depending on model specification, the throttle and steering
response, level of ride comfort, Dynamic Stability Control response and, on
automatic or Double Clutch Transmission cars, gear change times.

Powering the new BMW Z4 is a choice of three six-cylinder powerplants. The
range flagship is the current International Engine of the Year winning
3.0-litre twin-turbocharged engine. Producing 306hp at 5,800rpm, the BMW Z4
sDrive35i powers its way from zero to 62mph in 5.2 seconds (5.1 seconds for a
Double Clutch Transmission-equipped car) and on to an electronically-limited
top speed of 155mph. The twin-turbocharged 2,979cc engine with high-precision
direct injection technology produces 400Nm of torque from just 1,300rpm for
effortless in-gear acceleration. The strong performance credentials are matched
in terms of economy and emissions. The Z4 sDrive35i records a combined
consumption figure of 30.1mpg (31.4mpg) and CO2 emissions of 219g/km (210g/km).


Joining this model in the launch line-up are the Z4 sDrive23i and the Z4
sDrive30i. Both use the same magnesium aluminium alloy engine with Double VANOS
and VALVETRONIC technology, but with varying capacities. The 2,497cc
entry-level Z4 sDrive23i produces 204hp at 6,400rpm and 250Nm of torque from
2,750rpm. This equates to a zero to 62mph time of 6.6 seconds (7.3 seconds for
the Sport Automatic) and a top speed of 151mph (149mph). In contrast the Z4
sDrive23i is capable of 33.2mpg (34.4mpg) on the combined cycle and CO2
emissions of 199g/km (192g/km) respectively.


All three six-cylinder powerplants surpass the latest strict EU5 emissions
standards.


The BMW Z4 sDrive30i comes with a 2,996cc powerplant offering 258hp at 6,600rpm
and 310Nm of torque from 2,600rpm. The six-cylinder engine records a zero to
62mph time of 5.8 seconds (6.1 Seconds for the Sports Automatic) and an
electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. Like the Z4 sDrive23i, the Z4
sDrive30i posts impressive combined consumption and CO2 emissions figures,
recording 33.2mpg (34.0mpg) and 199g/km (195g/km).

EfficientDynamics
All of the latest BMW Z4s come as standard with facets of BMW's award-winning
EfficientDynamics programme. Technologies that improve engine performance while
enhancing economy and cutting emissions include Brake Energy Regeneration,
Electric Power Steering with Servotronic, Reduced Rolling Resistance Tyres,
on-demand control of the engine's ancillaries and Optimum Shift Indicator on
manual transmission cars. The BMW Z4 also adheres to a philosophy of
lightweight construction with the front suspension and subframe being largely
made from aluminium.


Enhanced packaging
The new BMW Z4 is larger than its predecessor measuring 148mm longer at 4,239mm
and 9mm wider at 1,790mm, and this results in greater interior space and
luggage capacity. With the roof up, headroom has been increased by 44mm while
the greater car width and design enhancements have led to 20mm more shoulder

For the first time on a BMW Z4 there is a bespoke storage facility located
behind the driver and passenger seats. This approximate 15.5-litre single
compartment stretches the width of the car's interior and features netting to
hold the contents in place. It can be complemented by an optional Storage
Package that adds further stowage capacity. BMW's latest generation of iDrive
makes its first appearance on a Z4. The BMW Professional Multimedia Navigation
system features a hard disc drive capable of 12Gb of audio file storage and BMW
ConnectedDrive functionality. The system also comes with eight programmable
Favourite buttons as system shortcuts.


The unique roof construction of the BMW Z4 creates a boot that varies in
capacity from 180 to 310 litres - large enough to stow a full set of golf
clubs. For the first time on a BMW Z4 customers can specify a through-loading
system for additional storage capability. A hatch between the two seats permits
a second full set of golf clubs to be carried.


Driver visibility in the BMW Z4 has also been improved. All round visibility is
up by 14 per cent while, courtesy of the four electric windows creating a
larger glasshouse, side visibility is up 40 per cent. The Retractable Hard-Top
roof features a glass rear window and this too improves visibility by 52 per
cent.

Hot on the heels of a record sales year in the UK, BMW has launched a new
specification tier on BMW 1, 3, 5 Series and Z4 models, offering even greater
value for money and personalisation. Edition models feature a range of
specific colour choices and interior options as well as specification
enhancements on four-cylinder cars.


BMW 1 Series Edition ES models
The line up of BMW 1 Series 3- and 5-door Sports Hatch derivatives has been
extended to offer even more customer choice. BMW 1 Series Edition ES models
are available in 116i and 118d guises and, for a nominal price increase of £250
over the current ES model, offer substantial added value.


All 1 Series Edition ES models feature a 17-inch star-spoke alloy wheel, sport
seats covered in upgraded cloth upholstery, three-spoke multi-function leather
steering wheel and front fog lights. This package of additional equipment
would normally add up to £1,340 to the cost of a standard ES model. The £250
upgrade benefits residual values too. CAP and Glass's have indicated that
Edition ES models are set to boost the BMW 1 Series' already strong residual
values.


BMW 3 Series Edition ES, Edition SE and Edition M Sport models
BMW 3 Series Edition models offer an even broader range of models and customer
choice, with 24 new models available. All four-cylinder petrol- and
diesel-powered 3 Series Saloon and Touring models are available in Edition ES,
Edition SE or Edition M Sport models. These models will add further driver
appeal and offer even higher levels of standard equipment to the compact
executive car of choice for retail and corporate buyers alike.

Edition ES and SE models come as standard in a choice of Carbon Black, Titanium
Silver or Sparkling Graphite colours. To complement the exterior colour, these
models also feature Dakota leather upholstery and Brushed Aluminium interior
trims. In addition, they are all equipped with a 17-inch V-spoke alloy wheel
(currently standard on 335i/d Coupé and Convertible models) and a three-spoke M
multi-function leather steering wheel.

Both the Edition ES and Edition SE models add £750 to the price of the existing
car but, at retail prices, add around £3,000 of equipment value to the car.

For those drivers who appreciate the sporting credentials of the 3 Series,
Edition M Sport Saloon and Touring models are available. Building on the
sporting pedigree of the 3 Series, the Edition M Sport models come as standard
in Carbon Black, Titanium Silver or Sparkling Graphite. Like the Edition ES
and SE models, Dakota leather seat coverings are standard.

The Edition M Sport also recognises BMW's continued success in the World
Touring Car Championship. It features the same 18-inch WTCC-style alloy wheel
as is fitted to the triple championship-winning BMW 320si.

In addition, the Edition M Sport models feature Business Navigation system,
complete with map guidance, Bluetooth mobile telephone connectivity and BMW's
new ConnectedDrive Online and Assist telematics package as standard.

With a nominal cost of £1,000 on top of the cost of the 'standard' M Sport
models, the Edition M Sport derivatives add up to £3,100 of additional customer
value to the car.

BMW 520d Business Navigation offer
2007 was a record sales year for 5 Series Saloon and Touring models in the UK
with nearly 20,000 cars sold and 520d models being the most popular
derivative. BMW is now adding even more value to the class-leading executive
car. For a nominal £350 contribution, buyers of 520d Saloon and Touring models
will receive BMW's Business navigation system, complete with map and arrow
view, normally valued at £1,365. In addition, a six-CD changer, usually
costing £295, is added to the package, representing a total customer saving of
£1,310.

BMW Z4 Roadster 2.0i Edition Exclusive and Edition Sport models
Four-cylinder open-topped Z4 customers also benefit from the same added value
and financial benefits of an Edition model. Buyers are able to choose between
the Z4 2.0i Edition Exclusive and Edition Sport models. Uniquely, Z4 Edition
models will be produced in limited numbers, with less than 300 planned in 2008.

Z4 Edition Exclusive models are offered in a range of metallic colour choices;
Sapphire Black, Stratus Grey, Space Grey, Titan Silver or Montego Blue. This
is complemented by BMW's Individual upholstery in full Soft Nappa leather. BMW
Individual interior trim in high-gloss Piano Black and an upgraded 17-inch
Star-spoke alloy wheel round off the offering. The Z4 Edition Exclusive model
costs an additional £1,045 representing a customer saving of £1,835.

Customers who enjoy more sports-oriented roof-down driving will select the Z4
2.0i Edition Sport. The Edition Sport is available in a choice of metallic
colours; Carbon Black, Black Sapphire, Space Grey, Titanium Silver and Montego
Blue. And the sporting exterior design of the Z4 matches the interior with the
Edition Sport models featuring BMW Individual Bi-colour New England leather
covering the sports seats as well as Individual Bi-colour interior trim. The
model is rounded off by visually-dynamic 18-inch Composite Star-spoke
light-alloy wheels. The Z4 2.0i Edition Sport models costs just £775 more than
the 'standard' Sport model but adds nearly £2,500 of options to the car.

All Edition models will start production in March 2008.

All Edition models feature BMW's EfficientDynamics programme, offering
increases in performance alongside reductions in emissions and improvements in

Short Story
Design - a 'Pocket GT'

"The new BMW Z4 Coupé is best described as a Pocket GT," said Adrian van
Hooydonk, Head of BMW Brand Design. "The Z4 Coupé should be considered as a
fully fledged GT car that has been shrink-wrapped around two people. It
represents the smallest possible package that can accommodate the occupants and
enough luggage for a long journey while still retaining the strong, muscular
stance of the cutting-edge Z4 Roadster."

"In common with the outgoing Z3, when designing the new Z4 family, we were
designing a Roadster for those who appreciate open-topped motoring and the
Coupé for customers who want a compact long-distance GT car," he continued.
"Interestingly, the new Coupé was actually designed at the same time as the
original Z4 Roadster in the late 1990s. BMW's hugely successful launch of new
models in recent years left some of the more niche models on the drawing
board. But my design team and I pushed for this car and an opportune time to
engineer the car for production. Designing the two Z4 models simultaneously
ensured that both share a common design theme and a cohesive appearance," he
concluded.

Front, back and sides:
From the front, the only visual difference from the Roadster is the 'double
bubble' contoured roof. This serves as an aerodynamic aid as well as offering
additional headroom to taller occupants. The side view is identical to the
profile of the Roadster from the front bumper back to the A-pillar and for the
full length of the car below the shoulder line. Above this, the gently sloping
Coupé roofline culminates at the rear of the car with a subtle aerodynamic lip
spoiler.

From the rear, the Coupé shares the same new rear lamp clusters as those
introduced on the Roadster in early 2006. Light conductor rods are fitted,
which illuminate a split-second earlier than conventional bulbs. The light
units sit on each side of the large clamshell hatchback lid that covers the
340-litre boot - easily enough to stow the luggage for a weekend away.

BMW Motorsport's Z4 M Coupé takes the Pocket GT design and adds a distinctive
sporting edge. A lower front valance with large air intakes dominates the
frontal view. The power bulge in the bonnet, created by two sharp
front-to-rear crease lines, also highlights the potential of the
high-performance M variant. From the rear, similar high performance traits are
exhibited. BMW M's trademark four exhaust tailpipes protrude from an
aerodynamic rear diffuser that ensures the car stays firmly planted on the
road. In profile, the Z4 M Coupé shares the lightweight five-spoke alloy wheel
design with the Roadster and they clearly display the M3 CSL braking system
behind (only on the M derivative).

High-performance Drivetrain:
The launch of the new Z4 Coupé offers UK customers a new BMW engine / model
definition. It is the first time that a roadster-based Coupé has been offered
with a 3.0-litre engine alongside the high-performance M Coupé derivative.
Drivers now have the choice of the lightest production six-cylinder engine in
the world powering their Coupé or the seven-times International Engine of the
Year category-winning BMW Motorsport powerplant - a focused high-performance
model line-up that will whet the appetites of motoring enthusiasts.

Z4 M Coupé:
The new BMW Z4 M Coupé is powered by BMW's familiar 3,246cc Motorsport engine.
Delivering 343hp at 7,900rpm, it easily surpasses the magical 100hp per litre
benchmark for naturally-aspirated high performance engines. Maximum torque of
365Nm is achieved at 4,900rpm and, highlighting the powerplant's flexibility,
80 per cent is available below 2,000rpm.

Such sporting statistics translate into scintillating performance, with the new
Z4 M Coupé posting a zero to 62mph time of 5.0 seconds before going on to an
electronically limited top speed of 155mph. These commendable figures do not
compromise the economy of the car, with the Coupé delivering a combined fuel
consumption of 23.3mpg and recording a CO2 output of 292g/km.

Variable M differential:
The high levels of power and torque are translated onto the road via a
six-speed manual gearbox and BMW's Variable M differential. Unlike a standard
fixed-ratio 'limited-slip diff', the Variable M differential delivers a fully
variable zero to 100 per cent of available power to the wheel that can most use
it in any given situation. It works by using a pump to generate internal
pressure when a wheel starts to spin. This pressure is applied to a clutch
that transfers power across the rear axle to the wheel with most grip. The
result? Lateral cornering acceleration that is higher than is permitted by a
conventional differential, a limited slip differential or any form of traction
control system.

Z4 3.0si Coupé - fast and frugal:
The 'entry-level' Z4 3.0si Coupé offers 265hp at 6,600rpm and peak torque of
315Nm at a relatively low 2,750rpm. These maximum performance levels are
assisted by pressing the Sport button located in the centre console. One touch
of the button quickens the throttle response as the car accelerates from zero
to 62mph in 5.7 seconds and, if left unchecked, travel on to an electronically
limited top speed of 155mph. However, this performance is not delivered at the
expense of economy - the 3.0si model delivers a combined fuel consumption of
31.7mpg while emitting 213g/km of CO2.

Sport automatic gearbox:
The new BMW Z4 3.0si comes with a six-speed close-ratio manual gearbox as
standard. Those drivers preferring the choice of automatic transmission
convenience and manual gearbox involvement will choose BMW's new Sport
automatic transmission. Based on a conventional automatic gearbox, a new
torque converter and software installation offers a 40 per cent improvement in
the gearbox response time compared to a conventional automatic gearbox and a
gear change time that is twice as fast.

The Sport automatic system features steering wheel-mounted paddles as a dynamic
accompaniment to BMW's traditional Steptronic gear lever. Finally, in common
with the sporting pedigree of the new Coupé, this automatic gearbox will blip
the throttle on down changes.

Rigid yet lightweight body and CSL suspension:
A key aim for the Z4 engineers was to develop a roadster with the stiffest body
structure of any open-topped car. Successfully achieved, the Coupé's
foundations were immediately in place and the addition of a fixed roof
increased the structural rigidity still further to 32,000Nm/degree. The Z4
Coupé features one of the stiffest body structures of any production car.

And this has not been achieved by the addition of extra weighty bracing. As a
consequence, the new Z4 3.0si Coupé weighs just 1,395kgs and the
high-performance 3.2-litre M Coupé 1,495kgs - only 10 kilograms more than the
Z4 M Roadster.

CSL inspiration:
When the Z4 design team were charged with creating a more sports-oriented car
than the Z3, they did have one serious advantage - access to componentry and
technology from the inspirational M3 CSL. The new Z4 M Coupé uses the CSL's
345 x 28mm front and 328 x 20mm rear drilled and vented brake discs and
high-performance callipers. Suspension components from the M3 CSL, such as the
single-joint front axle with McPherson spring struts, forged aluminium track
control arms and separate mountings for the springs and dampers, are also used
in the Z4 to offer the highest levels of agility and traction.

Steering:
The BMW Z4 3.0si Coupé features the electrically assisted Servotronic steering
from the Roadster. With its electrical assistance, engine power normally
needed to drive a hydraulic steering pump is reduced, equating to a reduction
in fuel consumption of one litre per 250 miles. The M division rightly ploughs
its own furrow and following many thousands of miles of evaluation on the
Nürburgring, engineers from BMW M decided to equip their car with conventional
hydraulic assistance. In their expert opinion it offered an even firmer
steering feel - perfect for the M experience.

Class-leading safety systems:
Keeping the high levels of performance firmly connected to the road is the
responsibility of the most advanced traction control and stability system
available - Dynamic Stability Control +. BMW's 'standard' DSC system maintains
traction by reducing engine power, applying the brakes where necessary and
monitoring the yaw angle of the car, bringing it back into line whenever
needed. DSC+ has five additional features to provide yet further safeguards
and comfort for the driver.

... Brake Pre-tensioning shortens stopping distances by priming the brakes the
instant the driver snaps off the accelerator in preparation for an emergency
stop.
... Brake Drying improves braking performance in the wet by periodically
applying the brakes to wipe off moisture.
... Hill Start Assistant allows a manual transmission car to pull away
smoothly on a gradient without rolling backwards.
... Fade Compensation recognises when the brakes are getting excessively hot
and 'fading', and applies additional hydraulic braking pressure to compensate,
without any extra effort from the driver.
... Soft Stop prepares the car for a perfectly smooth stop by releasing a
small proportion of braking pressure as the car comes to a standstill.

However, the laws of physics still apply and should the worst happen, the
occupants of the Z4 Coupé are well protected.

BMW's Advanced Safety Electronics (ASE) system uses remote satellite sensors
around the car to control the two front and two side airbags. In the event of
an accident, ASE will also separate the battery terminal, deactivate the
alternator and switch off the fuel pump to minimise the risk of fire. In
addition, the system will open the central locking and illuminate the interior
lights and hazard warning lights to warn approaching traffic of the problem.

Customers of cars fitted with BMW's innovative BMW Assist system (in
conjunction with Navigation) benefit from additional peace of mind. In the
event of an emergency, occupants can select the Assist feature in the on-board
monitor. This opens a telephone call that connects them to the Emergency
Services call centre who can dispatch assistance as necessary. Should the car
be involved in an accident where the airbags deploy, the car will automatically
connect to the call centre. If the call centre receives no response, they will
dispatch help to the co-ordinates supplied by the navigation system.

Another safety feature now widely used on BMW cars is Run-flat tyres. Since
their introduction, thousands of customers have realised the benefits of these
unique tyres. In 2005 alone, it is estimated that approximately 3,000 drivers
of Run-flat tyre-equipped BMWs and MINIs in the UK who suffered a puncture were
able to get home, or to a dealer, without having to perform a potentially
dangerous wheel-change.

The new Z4 3.0si Coupé is equipped with Run-flat tyres that, in the event of a
slow puncture or a high-speed blow-out, can continue to be driven for 150 miles
at 50mph, while still retaining the benefits of the DSC+ traction control
system and ABS brakes. This not only minimises the possibility of loss of
control of the car but also reduces weight and removes the inconvenience and
danger associated with changing a wheel at the side of the road.

The removal of the spare wheel and associated jacks and tools eliminates
approximately 20 kilograms from the rear of the car, lowering the centre of
gravity and improving still further the handling characteristics.

During the development of the Z4 M Coupé, engineers from BMW M evaluated the
Run-flat and conventional tyres around the infamous Nürburgring. They
concluded that the high levels of performance from the M car necessitated the
fitment of 'conventional' tyres as standard on all Z4 M Coupés. However, to
maintain the highest safety levels, the wheels of the Z4 M Coupé are designed
to prevent the tyre coming off the wheel, even in the event of a high-speed
blow out. Punctures can be sealed using the M Mobility System and, without a
spare wheel, the same weight benefit as the Run-flat tyre solution is achieved.

Enthusiasts' market:
The recent launch of the new Z4 Roadster marked the first time that Z4 had been
offered with Sport models. Having proved successful in other BMW model series
- 65 per cent of six-cylinder 3 Series and up to 95 per cent of all X5 vehicles
being bought as Sport models - the take up of Z4 3.0si Coupé Sport is expected
to be approximately 80 per cent. In addition to the SE specification, Sport

Inclusive pre-paid servicing packages. Owners can select from a three-year /
36,000 miles or five-year / 60,000 mile Service package that covers the cost of
all service items, from £430. 'Service and Maintenance' coverage can also be
purchased for the same periods. In addition to the Service package, this
covers costs associated with replacement brake pads, brake discs, brake
sensors, brake fluid, clutch assembly (if worn) and wiper blade rubbers. This
level of cover starts at £720.

A niche market for exclusive customers:
The new BMW Z4 is sure to have a wide emotional appeal for both sports car and
BMW fans. But with only two seats, the car is unlikely to be on the shopping
list of the majority of car buyers. It is, quite naturally, a niche model and
will be an exclusive sight on British roads. As a result, BMW UK expects to
sell approximately 1,000 Z4 Coupés in 2006, of which approximately 200 are
expected to be the high-performance M variant.

between 35 and 45 years. Irrespective of these expectations, the owner of a Z4
Coupé will be a driving enthusiast who enjoys the thrill of driving exclusive,
high-performance sports cars.

"Most cars in the sporting coupé sector try to be a jack of all trades.....and
end up being the master of none,' said Jim O'Donnell, Managing Director of BMW
(UK) Ltd. "The Z4 Coupé is different - it is a focused sports car aimed fairly

The Z4 M Coupé, in particular, is an unashamed performance car as much at home

Limited history:
Very few roadster-based Coupés have been produced in BMW's history. Each car
that has made it to production has been produced in very small numbers. The
first, the 1940 BMW 328 Mille Miglia Coupé, is arguably BMWs most exclusive car
with only two examples ever built, and both of these were for racing. The
open-topped 328 was a limited production, high-performance sports car that was
adapted for racing. Clothed in aluminium, each racing Coupé weighed less than
650kgs and developed 135bhp at 5,500rpm from the two-litre engine. This made
the cars capable of speeds exceeding 130mph - a speed many modern day two-litre
cars struggle to attain.

Nearly 60 years passed before a car adopting the same principle arrived for a
wider audience in the form of the BMW Z3 Coupé. The Z3 Roadster evolved into a
coupé in 1998 and was launched in the UK with BMW M's 321hp powerplant.

Many European markets offered 2.8i and 3.0i derivatives but, in the UK, M
models satisfied purists' requirements. Combining an engine that delivered
over 100bhp per litre with a very rigid yet compliant chassis, the Z3 M Coupé
was considered an out-and-out driver's car. Its rarity and unusual styling
gave it a unique place in the hearts' of sports car aficionados. It was a car
many considered to be for those 'in the know'. In total, 17,815 cars were
built before it ceased production in 2002.

BMW Concept Coupé Mille Miglia:
The BMW Concept Coupé Mille Miglia connects the success of the 1940 328 Mille
Miglia Coupé with the new Z4 Coupé. Unveiled prior to the 2006 Mille Miglia,
the concept took pride of place as the entrants were scrutineered before to the
event in Brescia, Italy on May 10 2006.

While the styling unashamedly looks to the past, the modern, multi-award
winning BMW six-cylinder engine from the Z4 M Coupé powered the car.
Modifications were made to the inlet and exhaust systems of the 343 hp unit to
give the concept car more of a 'racing' sound at both idle and full throttle.

The concept car's hinged hardtop roof was a reference to the relaxation of the
racing car rules when closed vehicles became eligible to race. Similarly, the
new Z4 Coupé is derived from the Z4 Roadster soft-top. The concept also
benefits from an extremely lightweight chassis, with the aluminium and
carbon-fibre reinforced plastic body 'stretched' over a lattice frame and
painted in 'fine silver', a full-gloss paint with extremely fine pigments that
recall classic silver race colours.

Engine:

The Z4 is powered by some of the smoothest, most refined engines currently
available. The line-up offers five powerplants starting with a 150hp 2.0-litre
four-cylinder petrol engine and rising to a 343hp 3.2-litre straight-six
ensuring a spread of performance to suit all tastes. All engines offer VANOS
variable valve timing technology with VALVETRONIC variable valve opening
technology featuring on all 'standard' cars (except the Z4 M Roadster).

Using the 3.2-litre engine that has won category honours five times in a row at
the Engine of the Year awards, the all-new BMW Z4 M Roadster is the new
flagship model of the range. With 63hp more than a Porsche Boxster S, on-road
performance is breathtaking. Capable of a zero to 62mph time of just 5.0
seconds, the Z4 M Roadster goes on to an electronically-limited155mph.

But it is not just the BMW Z4 M Roadster powerplant that has a story to tell.
Featuring the world's lightest production six-cylinder engine made of aluminium
and magnesium, the BMW Z4 3.0si uses VANOS and VALVETRONIC variable valve
technology to help it achieve 265hp and 315Nm of torque - figures which also
better the output of a Porsche Boxster. On the road this results in a zero to
62mph time of 5.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.

The Z4 2.5si and Z4 2.5i Roadsters offer two outputs from the same six-cylinder
engine. The 2.5si delivers 218hp and 250Nm of torque and records a zero to
62mph time of 6.5 seconds before going on to a top speed of 149mph. Meanwhile,
the Z4 2.5i with its 177hp and 230Nm engine achieves a zero to 62mph
acceleration time of 7.1 seconds and a top speed of 142mph.

Representing the entry point to BMW Z4 ownership, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder
petrol model is powered by an engine built at BMW's Hams Hall production
facility in the Midlands. Using both VANOS and VALVETRONIC technology to
develop 150hp and a peak torque of 200Nm, the car is capable of a zero to 62mph
time of 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 137mph.

So smooth was this 2.0-litre powerplant in the first generation Z4 that testers
from Evo magazine were moved to comment that the car felt the same behind the
wheel as a six-cylinder engine. Top Gear magazine was similarly enamoured,
referring to the model as a car that made a lot of sense with buyers who get
the looks, dynamics and open air motoring of the rest of the Z4 line-up, but
with savings on the initial outlay, economy and even on insurance.

The Z4 2.0-litre is also a tax efficient proposition for the company car user
courtesy of CO2 emissions of just 181g/km that sees it slip into a lower
Vehicle Excise Duty tax banding than other Z4's. An award from Fleet Week and
Fleet Management publications, which voted the Z4 their Car of the Year, only
serves to back-up the roadster as a credible company car choice.

Transmission:

All the new Z4's come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox and this
short-shifting 'box is the sole transmission available on the M Roadster. A
new 'Sport Automatic' gearbox, optional on 2.5si and 3.0si six-cylinder Z4's,
offers a full auto mode or the option to change gear using the gear stick or
paddles located behind the steering wheel. A 'Sport Automatic'-equipped car
not only changes gear faster compared to the previous automatic gearbox offered
on the original Z4 but blips the throttle on down-changes for a smoother
transition between gears.

This is the first use of paddles on a BMW automatic transmission system. All
previous Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) systems, as the name suggests, were
based on a manual 'box. Drivers of the Z4 2.5i can also specify the same
automatic transmission offered previously in the original Z4.

Chassis:

One of the stiffest chassis in its class provides the Z4 with the perfect basis
on which to engineer a sportscar with supreme on-road dynamics. With kerb
weights in the range between 1,295kgs and 1,485kgs - lighter than comparable
cars from Audi, and Mercedes - and a low centre of gravity, the Z4 range offers
true driving pleasure.

The Z4 Roadster's front suspension is a spring strut structure with forged
aluminium track control arms and twin-sleeve gas-pressure spring struts. The
rear suspension features reinforcement bars and thrust plates in the
underfloor, connecting the front of the rear bulkhead onto the body under sills
on both sides. The central arm rear axle also features twin-sleeve gas
pressure dampers for optimum road holding and comfort.

An optional Sport Suspension package lowers the ride height of the car by 15mm
and offers more focused ride characteristics for the enthusiast. The same
suspension arrangement is part of the standard equipment for Sport models.

The Z4 M Roadster has its own unique suspension ride height with spring and
damper compliance based on the 'standard' car. It also uses the same powerful
braking system of drilled and vented discs from the legendary BMW M3 CSL.

Safety and Technology:

The Z4 has the most advanced form of traction control system currently
available in the world - Dynamic Stability Control+ (DSC+). Building on the
already accomplished DSC system, DSC+ offers five further safety enhancements:

... Brake Pre-tensioning shortens stopping distances by priming the brakes if
the driver instinctively lifts off the accelerator in preparation for an
emergency stop.
... Brake Drying improves braking performance in the wet by periodically
gently applying the pads to the discs. In wet weather conditions, a film of
water can build up on the disc hindering stopping power but this slight braking
action removes this film and ensures optimum retardation.
... Hill Start Assistant allows the driver of a manual transmission car to
pull away smoothly on a gradient without having to balance the clutch and the
throttle. Brake pressure is maintained for the time it takes to move the foot
from brake to accelerator, preventing the car from rolling backwards.
... Fade Compensation can apply additional braking without any extra effort
from the driver. Following very spirited driving the brakes may experience
some fade due to excessive heat build up. However, Fade Compensation means the
pads still bite the disc for optimum stopping power.
... Soft Stop contributes to a smoother journey for all occupants. A small
proportion of braking pressure is released as the car comes to a standstill,
minimising the potential for a sharp, halting stop.

Other safety and technology benefits fitted as standard to the new (non-M) Z4
include Run-flat tyres and a Tyre Puncture Warning System (TPWS). The Z4 M
Roadster uses a combination of TPWS and M Mobility system. BMW's M division
remains committed to 'standard' tyres that contribute to the extreme
performance levels preferred by its customers.

BMW Assist comes as standard for a BMW Z4 specified with the optional
Professional navigation system and Bluetooth phone preparation. In the event
of an accident, the driver can use BMW Assist to make contact with the
emergency services. The system also broadcasts a pinpoint map location via
satellite to aid recovery. In the unfortunate event of an accident resulting
in airbag deployment, BMW Assist automatically contacts the emergency services.
BMW Assist also provides a similar level of assistance with regards to
breakdown cover courtesy of the automatic vehicle locator function.

Market and Marketing:

Research into Z4 owners shows the car is enjoyed as more of a performance
roadster than the Z3 it replaced. BMW's own customer research, based on buyers
of the original Z4, has shown that the two main purchasing drivers were style
and on-road performance.

To underscore the more masculine nature of the Z4, men account for more than
two thirds of buyers, while the biggest age group of Z4 owners falls into the
30-39-year-old category. The average annual income of a Z4 owner's household
is £72,000.

Sport models are also available for the first time on a Z4 and feature 18-inch
M Double spoke or optional 18-inch composite alloy wheels, M Sports seats,
Active Sports part leather/cloth upholstery seats (leather upholstery for 3.0si
models), three-spoke M leather steering wheel and M Sports Suspension.

Design:

The Z4 follows the classic design traits displayed by much-loved BMW roadsters
of the past such as the 328, 507, Z1, Z3 and Z8. With its rear-wheel-drive,
50:50 weight distribution, long bonnet and a driver seated towards the rear of
the car, the new Z4 is every inch a typical BMW roadster.

Subtle differences make the new Z4 stand out from the car it replaces. A
revised front spoiler and air intake enhance its distinctive look while also
improving the car's aerodynamic efficiency. The front bumper replicates the
sharp Z motifs found on the side profile of the car. The headlights have been
redesigned and now include corona light rings as standard when cars are
specified with Xenon lamps.

The front wheel arches incorporate side reflectors for improved on-road
visibility while, at the rear, all-new tail lamps feature BMW Z8-style
horizontal light conductor rods. The rear bumper has also been reprofiled.
The Z4 Roadster comes with a revised range of light alloy wheels and retains
its crown of still having the world's fastest electronically-operated hood.
Open-top driving can be enjoyed in just 10 seconds.

The Z4 M Roadster comes with an even more distinctive front spoiler arrangement
than the standard car. A larger air intake and two smaller ducts, one to each
side in place of foglights, play a key role in brake cooling and induction.
Two crease lines in the bonnet are manufactured through a new 'rapid-forming'
process introduced on the Spartanburg production line and visually emphasise
the power of the engine below. Four chrome exhaust pipes - a BMW 'M' hallmark
- leave no doubt about the car's performance. The Z4 M Roadster comes with
unique 18-inch light alloy wheels running on 225/45 tyres at the front and
255/40 tyres at the rear.

Spartanburg:

BMW's manufacturing philosophy is one of production following the market. With
the US as BMW's biggest market for sales, the Spartanburg plant was established
in 1994 to build the Z3. The X5 followed in 1999 and the Z4 in 2002. The
state-of-the-art facility in South Carolina is the sole worldwide production
centre of the Z4 Roadster, the Z4 M Roadster and also the forthcoming Z4
Coupé. It also continues to be the production home of the BMW X5.

Since opening in July 1994, BMW Spartanburg has produced more than 500,000 BMW
X5's, 300,000 Z3 and 100,000 Z4's. More than US$2.48 billion (approximately
£1.4 billion) has been invested in the 1,150-acre plant.

Not only does the plant provide a huge boost to South Carolina's economy - it
currently employs 4,500 associates - but it has also been designed to minimise
environmental impact. For example, recycled methane gas drawn from the
Palmetto Landfill site nearby now provides 25 per cent of the factory's power
needs. In fact, the project recovers sufficient energy to heat the equivalent
of 15,000 homes per year.

The use of this methane reduces carbon dioxide emissions across the plant by
the equivalent of driving 105 million miles per year or more than 4,000 times
around the earth.

In addition to this, the BMW Information Technology Research Centre based at
Clemson University in Greenville, South Carolina, opened in Summer 2005. The
84,000 sq. ft. building is equipped with six secure research zones and is used
by the technicians and engineers of the future to look at a host of ways of
streamlining manufacturing and car design processes.

3.0si Coupé and the new BMW Z4 M Coupé. The new Z4 Coupé is due to start
production at BMW's manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA

BMW Z4 M Coupé:

The new high-performance BMW Z4 M Coupé generates 343hp and 365Nm of torque
from its 3.2-litre straight-six cylinder engine. Maximum power is generated at
7,900rpm while 80 per cent of the maximum torque is available from 2,000rpm.

The renowned power and flexibility of the 'M' engine contributes to a zero to
62mph time of 5.0 seconds and propels the car to an electronically limited top
speed of 155mph. Power is transferred to the road via a six-speed short-shift
manual transmission.

Key to the purity of driving dynamics and handling characteristics of the Z4
Coupé is its exceptionally stiff body structure of 32,000Nm/degree. The
suspension of the new Z4 M Coupé is largely the same as the recently announced
BMW Z4 M Roadster, apart from the spring and damper settings that take account
of the different weight distribution of the fixed head car. The chassis and
suspension also share many common features from the benchmark BMW M3 Coupé,
such as the M variable differential and compound brake system taken directly
from the M3 CSL. Also in common with the forthcoming Roadster, the new Z4 M
Coupé rides on unique, lightweight Z4 M alloy wheels shod with 225/45 ZR18
tyres on the front and 255/40 ZR18 tyres on the rear.

From the outside, there is no mistaking the new BMW Z4 M Coupé with its
purposeful stance. The roof of the two seater is contoured for added
headroom. From the sides, the long bonnet accentuates the dramatic styling
with occupants set back in true sports car style. Owners can personalise their
new BMW Z4 M Coupé with a choice of three exclusive M colours and five
'standard' colours.

From the front, a deep front air-dam with distinct x-shaped lines
differentiates the 'M' car from the 3.0si. Large air scoops in the valance and
two precision lines running along the bonnet signal the car's performance
credentials. Xenon headlamps and BMW's unique corona light rings also
accentuate the dynamism of the front view.

From the rear, the car's wide rear wheel arches combined with horizontal

BMW Z4 3.0si Coupé SE / Sport:

Powered by BMW's innovative magnesium-alloy 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, the
new BMW Z4 3.0si Coupé develops 265hp at 6,600rpm and peak torque of 315Nm at
2,750rpm. This powers the car from zero to 62mph in 5.7 seconds and on to an
electronically limited top speed of 155mph. These high levels of performance
are not, however, at the expense of fuel consumption with the 3.0si models
delivering a combined fuel consumption of 31.7mpg.

This lightweight engine is mated to a six-speed, close ratio manual
transmission as standard, ensuring that the driver can select the exact ratio
for any given situation. Customers preferring an automatic can opt for BMW's
six-speed Sports automatic gearbox that, like the open-top Z4, allows the
driver to select gears using paddles on the steering wheel and features
blip-throttle down changes.

Like the Z4 M Coupé, the 3.0si benefits from BMW's tradition of near perfect
50:50 axle weight distribution, a low centre of gravity and rear-wheel-drive.
All of these traits combine in the new Z4 Coupé to deliver a dynamic, sporting
drive. The new Z4 Coupé can also be used as a cross-continent cruiser, with

All the Performance of a Thoroughbred Sports Car.

The glazed part of the passenger cell referred to by experts as the
"greenhouse" visibly tapers out into the rear end, accentuating the rear wheel
arches in a powerful and muscular look. The spoiler designed into the rear lid,
in turn, ensures optimum aerodynamics and streamlining, with the third brake
light integrated beneath the spoiler in the rear lid. A further effect of the
spoiler and brake light is the additional emphasis they give to the sheer width
of the car's rear end.

The seam around the rear lid extends discreetly along the rear side windows,

gives this unique Coupé the silky-matt glossiness of a sculpture made of

dimensions and finished intentionally in a dark colour contrasting with the
paint of the car underline the highly focused and powerful expression conveyed
by the Z4 Coupé. Made exclusively for this Concept Car, the wheels are a
product of the most elaborate casting technology.

Giving great attention - and, indeed, love - to detail, BMW's colour and trim
designers have created a unique interior tailored in every respect to the BMW
Z4 Coupé Concept. The most modern materials in first-class quality are combined
with one another exclusively for this Concept Car, offering features and

the future of interior design with all its potentials.

Like the exterior, the interior of the Z4 Coupé Concept uses contrasts instead
of compromises to generate the sensation of dynamism and excitement. The use
and combination of materials and colours harmonises the technical and sporting
features of the exterior with soft and harmonious elements within the interior,
thus creating a world of peacefulness and tranquillity.

Matt and glossy surfaces form intentional contrasts intermingling with the
numerous solid aluminium units inside the car, extending the technical features
and fortes of the Z4 Coupé visibly far into the interior. And at the same time
soft, top-quality leather in warm brown colours exudes the feeling of being
cocooned within this Ultimate Driving Machine. "Cold" high technology and
"warm" osiness - in this case this is not a contradiction in terms, but rather
a harmonious blend of supreme qualities.

Light and Dark Surfaces Interacting with One Another.
Black and coloured surfaces clearly distinguish the various function levels
from one another, the driver perceiving the black surfaces along the car's
upper sill line as a clear delineation from the exterior at the same time
creating a feeling of pleasant safety.

The contrasts and brightness of the interior convey a clear signal of
open-mindedness and grandeur. An expression of space further enhanced by the
arrangement of colours on the dashboard and the interior trim.

High-Gloss and Woven Leather as Clear Signs of Tradition and Progress.

Silky high-gloss leather and classic, timeless woven leather form an
intentional contrast to the almost silky Nubuk leather inside the car. The
aluminium pedals and the footwells come complete with inserts made of robust
burr leather. And we find the same combinations of top-quality materials within
the luggage compartment and in the travel baggage integrated therein.

Aluminium - an Experience in Looks and Touch.
Over and above sumptuous leather, the interior is characterised throughout by
polished and brushed aluminium components in the trim around the door closing
handle, with the rotary knob for the air conditioning, the pedals and the
loading sill on the luggage compartment all milled out of one single block of
aluminium. So that these massive aluminium components are a genuine experience
not only in their looks, but also in their touch.

all the demands of even the most discerning coupé customer. And last but
certainly not least, the Z4 Coupé Concept offers adequate space and all the
motoring comfort and convenience even the enthusiastic aficionado of a
thoroughbred sports car would not like to miss these days in a sporting
two-seater of this calibre.

The BMW for sun worshippers puts all others in the shade. In the EuroNCAP test
from May 2004, the open-topped BMW Z4 Roadster turned in the best test results
ever seen in the Roadster segment.

'The BMW Z4 is as safe as it is exciting. Ever since it was launched, it has
remained the top car of its class. And now it has been shown to be the safest
of its class too, for drivers and passengers alike,' says Martin Klanner, Z4
project manager of the BMW Group in Munich.

With more than 19.000 cars sold this year worldwide by May the Z4 is the most
successful roadster in its segment also for 2004. It is keeping this position
ever since market introduction in October 2002.

BMW Z4 Roadster demonstrates just what is possible nowadays:
Passenger stress is even lower than in solid-top vehicles

The EuroNCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) assesses the level of risk
of driver and passenger injury on a sixteen-point scale. The Z4's numbers were
15.64 for a frontal impact and 16.00 for a crash from the side. These are the
best results ever recorded by this test procedure.

Exciting design, calming safety.
Stability comes from within

Although the Z4 does not have a fixed roof construction, the level of passenger
stress in the event of an accident is even lower than in most modern vehicles
with a solid roof.

'This is a milestone for the development of vehicle safety and at the same time
an impressive demonstration of the strength of innovation shown by BMW
engineers,' comments Martin Klanner.

But not only has the Z4 won the top score for safety, it is at the same time
extremely deformation resistant, an important factor of the BMW Roadster's
sporting performance.

These superior test results are also confirmed by the virtual crash tests,
which BMW applied in the development of the Z4's bodyshell structure up to its
current level. The Z4 obtains its high level of stability from the central Y
support in the floor pan section, in association with the frame construction in
the side panels, which extend from the front wheel arch via the sill to the
rear section, and are made of high-strength steel material. They are connected
to the safety cage via the rollover protector in the A column/windscreen frame,
the foot-rest surfaces, with optimised intrusion properties, and the traverse
body sills with the integrated rollover protectors behind the seats.

BMW Z4 pace setter with further innovative safety features:
Run-flat tyres, tyre puncture indicator and two-level brake light.

The Z4 is also a trend setter in terms of safety in many other areas. The
sport-style, open-top two-seater is available exclusively with run-flat tyres.
The tyre faces make it considerably easier to control vehicle reactions in the
event of a sudden puncture and it is even possible to continue driving for up
to 150 km even following a complete loss of tyre pressure. Since eighty percent
of all punctures are preceded by a slow pressure drop, a puncture warning
indicator is fitted as standard. This warns the driver well in advance, should
a drop in pressure occur in any of the tyres, before any serious damage occurs.
Another BMW innovation with which the Z4 is fitted as standard is the two-level
brake light. In the event of an emergency stop, additional LEDs are activated
in the brake lights, which have the effect of enhancing the warning signal to
any vehicles to the rear.

The Advanced Safety Electronic (ASE) system constitutes the mastermind for a
number of further, standard safety features, all included in the Z4. It is
responsible for triggering off the airbags in appropriate situations - of
course only the ones that are actually required in the given circumstances -
and activates the seat-belt tightening mechanism. It also disconnects the
battery, switches off the generator and fuel pump, releases the central lock
and activates the interior light and hazard warning lamps. If either the
'Professional' or 'Business' telephone - available as an optional extra - is
fitted, an emergency call is placed automatically via the 'BMW Assist'
telematic service, and the location of the vehicle stated. A voice connection
to the emergency switchboard is also set up.

The new BMW Z4 2.2i

BMW's latest addition to its highly respected roadster pedigree, the Z4, has
become more accessible with the addition of the new 2.2-litre model to the
current 2.5i and 3.0i line up. Following the Z4's June UK debut, production of
the third Z4 roadster variant started in October 2003, priced at £24,255 on-the
road.

Engine
The familiar straight-six, 2.2-litre engine from the 3 and 5 Series ranges lies
under the bonnet, powering the Z4 2.2i from rest to 62 mph in 7.7 seconds. With
the engine also developing 210 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm, the car is no slouch
on twisting, mountainous roads or the highway. The car is capable of a
wind-in-the-hair top speed of 140 mph.

Developing maximum power output of 170 bhp at 6,100 rpm, its engine is
controlled by a drive-by-wire throttle butterfly. Engine and gearbox
electronics 'know' which gear is selected and adapt the throttle butterfly
response offering supreme flexibility and maximum performance whatever the
circumstances.

Gearbox
As on the 2.5-litre model, the Z4 2.2i offers drivers a manual five-speed
gearbox as standard with the option of a five-speed automatic priced at £1,350.
Carried over the from the 3 Series range, the automatic gearbox includes BMW's
Steptronic system with manual shift; drivers simply pull back the lever to
change up and push forwards to down shift.

Chassis and Body
Using lightweight components such as an aluminium bonnet and roll bars
integrated into the basic body structure, the Z4 2.2i weighs in at a svelte
1,325kgs - that's 30kgs lighter than its predecessor, the Z3 2.2i and lighter
than the 2.5i and 3.0i models too.

However, the car is remarkably strong and scuttle shake is now a thing of the
past. Boasting torsional rigidity of 14,500 Nm/degree, the Z4 is almost three
times as stiff as its predecessor Z3 (5,600Nm/degree) an unprecedented figure
for the roadster segment.

Electric Power Steering (EPS) is an electro-mechanical system, which made its
debut in both 2.5i and 3.0i Z4 launch models and is also standard on the 2.2i.
EPS consigns the weighty power steering pump to the parts bin and replaces it
with a torque sensor and electric motor. The sensor measures the driver's
steering input and translates it into a turning angle using an electric motor
connected to the steering spindle. Steering feel and feedback can therefore be
controlled by software, which provides a precise steering damper effect,
optimising the driving experience whatever the road surface.

Safety
Drivers of the Z4 will naturally feel safe, cosseted in a cockpit with high
waistlines and permanent rollover protection. Moreover, both active and
passive safety is of primary concern on all BMWs and occupant protection is
assured in the Z4 thanks to the Advanced Safety Electronics system. This
features a control module linked to satellite sensors located in the left and
right B pillars, which detect the nature of any impact and activate relevant
airbags should they be required. The module also deactivates the fuel pump and
alternator as well as breaking the safety terminal on the battery, reducing the
risk of fire.

Standard Equipment
Not only is the new Z4 2.2i an exceptionally well-specified roadster, it also
holds a world record - it has the fastest retracting fully automatic
convertible roof on the market. One push of the button on the centre console
releases latches on the windscreen surround, and the roof glides into its
lowered position. In less than 10 seconds the roof is down, with the front
section acting as a tonneau cover. A simple push of the button returns it to
its fully closed position.

Drivers who want roof-down motoring but also need to maximise storage space
will benefit from the innovative Variable Soft Top Compartment. With the roof
up, an additional 20 litres of boot space is available (up from 220 to 240
litres) by collapsing the roof storage box in the boot, normally used to store
the roof.

The Z4 2.2i also comes as standard with air-conditioning, single CD player,
Sports seats and Sports steering wheel. Additionally, the 16" Cross Spoke
alloy wheels fitted as standard on the Z4 2.2i are fitted with Run-flat tyres -
which come with optional wheels across the Z4 range too. Driven carefully at
50 mph, the car can travel for up to 90 miles with one or more punctured tyres,
signalling the end of road side wheel changes or the wait for breakdown
assistance. In the absence of a spare wheel, the car also benefits from less
weight and more boot space.

Optional Equipment
As well as high levels of standard specification, a myriad optional equipment
is available for the Z4 2.2i. Five different alloy wheel options are available,
from a 16" through to a Composite 18" wheel.

Creature comforts normally associated with Executive saloons are also
available, with the option of Business or Professional navigation systems. The
Business system is integrated into the dashboard facia, while the Professional
system features an 8.8 inch (22.5cm) monitor which rises from the dashboard at
the push of a button, with the screen doubling as a television where
specified. All navigation systems for BMW cars now include a DVD disc that
provides quick access to detailed maps covering the whole of Europe.

Drivers are able to keep in touch on the move by specifying either the
Professional car telephone, or Bluetooth phone preparation. Compatible Nokia
and Sony telephones can be paired with the car, where the Bluetooth wireless
connection provide hands-free functionality. Additionally, Voice Control can
be specified to direct a number of telephone and navigation functions without
needing to remove your hands from the steering wheel.

For the ultra-hardy Z4 driver, seat heating makes roof down motoring in the
winter even more comfortable.

Market
The new BMW Z4 was launched on 19 June 2003 to instant accolades. Autocar
rated the new car as better than the Porsche Boxster, commenting that the
difference was "the accumulation of small advantages such as the car's superior
bottom-end performance, its slicker gear change, its price advantage and more
contemporary looks."

The dynamic appeal of a genuine sports car is complemented by strong economy
figures. Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 32.1 mpg with C02 emissions
at 214g/km, placing it in the 28 per cent band for company car tax.

Figures to the end of October confirm that a total of 3,800 cars have left BMW
showrooms around the UK, with 55 per cent being the Z4 2.5i. Customers wishing
to order a car should act quickly if they want a Z4 roadster for next summer.
Waiting lists for the 2.5i and 3.0i launch models already stretch into June
2004, with the 2.2i variant bound to follow suit.

1. The BMW Z4 roadster - Short Story

Roadsters have played a key role in BMW's history, and the Z4 is set to write
another chapter in the open-top story. Since the birth of the first example in
1936, the famous BMW 328, all roadsters have shared common proportions and
design principles - long bonnet; low, set back driving position; long wheelbase
with short overhangs and a fabric soft top. The new BMW Z4 is no different.
It shares all of those traditional principles, but takes the roadster
experience full throttle into the 21st century.

Design:
A real head turner, the Z4's principal styling feature is its bold double
waistline. The upper waistline extends from the headlamp across the top edge
of the bonnet, dipping through the door handle before rising to create the
muscular rear wheel arch. By contrast, the lower waistline extends under the
door before rising up at the rear of the door. Joining the two waistlines is a
near-45 degree crease in the front wing that displays an innovative combined
side repeater and BMW roundel.

The dramatic styling and a choice of four non-metallic and six metallic colours
compliment the car's proportions, offering a purposeful and visually impressive
car. The long wheelbase of 2,495 mm (98.2 inches), and overhangs that are 33
mm longer at the front and 2 mm longer at the rear than the outgoing Z3,
stretch the Z4 to 4,091 mm (161.1 inches), with a width of 1,781 mm (70.1
inches).

But it is not just the exterior that commands attention; the interior is a
triumph of ergonomics and is designed to balance its comfortable and roomy
cabin with a driving position that feels cocooned and low to the ground. There
is a real 'connectedness' to the Z4.

From the driver's perspective, the dashboard combines design purity and
traditional roadster practicality. The dash binnacle housing a circular
speedometer, rev counter, fuel and temperature gauges dominates the view, with
robust but elegant switchgear falling easily to hand.

Both the dashboard and low-slung seating position ensure the driver feels
connected to the Z4, with the seat location 20 mm nearer the tarmac and 40 mm
further back in the wheelbase than for a Z3 driver. The standard Sports seats
envelop the occupants and are available in four different cloth and leather
combinations, with an angle and reach adjustable steering column also fitted as
standard.

Whilst enjoying a sports car persona, the Z4 also offers practicality, with
large door pockets, a ten-litre capacity storage box between the seats and a
260-litre boot - enough for two sets of golf clubs. The capacious boot size
owes much to BMW's innovative variable soft-top storage compartment. With the
roof down, 20 litres of storage space is taken up by the convertible roof.
When the roof is raised, a lever in the boot collapses the soft-top compartment
leaving the roof storage space to be used as boot space.

The BMW Z4 also holds a world record - the fastest retracting fully automatic
convertible roof in the world. Proving handy for the UK's occasional
downpours, it retracts fully in less than 10 seconds with a simple push of a
button and comes standard on both the 2.5i and 3.0i cars. It also features an
inventive convertible roof mechanism. The roof structure is made of
weight-saving magnesium and aluminium and the reinforced front panel of the
fully lined fabric roof folds flat, which means no need for a tonneau cover
with the added benefit of reduced wind noise in the cabin.

By the end of 2003, a hard top will also be available, featuring an integral
roof spoiler. This makes the car look more coupe-like, and increases down
force, improving aerodynamics.

Engine:
At launch, the Z4 features either 2.5i and 3.0i power plants carried over from
the 3 Series range - the best 2.5-litre petrol engine in the world, according
to this year's International Engine of the Year awards. The 2.5i (2,494 cc)
roadster produces 141 kW / 192 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 245 Nm of torque at 3,500
rpm. It sprints to 62 mph in a more than respectable 7.0 seconds before
topping out at 146 mph.

Its larger brother, the 3.0i, displaces 2,979 cc, producing 170 kW / 231 bhp at
5,900 rpm and 300 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. That's enough to blast the car
from 0-62 mph in 5.9 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 155 mph.

Although the engines may be reassuringly familiar, much of the technology is
brand new.

Introduced as a world first, Engine Sound System (MSS) is fitted as standard to
the Z4 3.0i. BMW acoustic engineers have worked on a system that delivers
enhanced engine intake noise directly from the intake manifold into the
cockpit, making the driver feel more connected to the car's lightning
performance.

Adding to this connectedness is the Z4's all-electronic throttle butterfly,
which delivers maximum engine power spontaneously as the throttle butterfly
adapts itself to any given driving situation.

The Z4 also benefits from Driving Dynamics Control (DDC), previously only seen
on cars from BMW Motorsport. DDC is operated using the Sport button on the
centre console and once activated, alters the throttle pedal mapping for faster
accelerator reaction times, and the power steering response for a more direct
and dynamic steering response. It also positively recalibrates the point of
gear change if the car is fitted with the optional automatic or Sequential
Manual Gearboxes.

Keeping the Z4 on the straight and narrow is BMW's Dynamic Stability Control
(DSC). Activated when the car begins to lose grip and threatens to slide, it
reduces power to the driving wheels at a 5 per cent loss of traction. In
extreme circumstances, the system applies the brakes to get the car, and
driver, out of difficulty. The Z4 also features Dynamic Traction Control
(DTC), maintaining driver involvement in tricky conditions. Activated by
turning DSC off, DTC provides the same fundamental reassurance as DSC, but with
a greater threshold of 10 per cent loss of traction. The combination of the
two gives the driver the safety and security provided by DSC with the same
nimble agility of a car equipped with a conventional limited-slip differential.

Transmission:
Every driving style is catered for, as the Z4 is available with four gearbox
combinations. The 2.5i roadster comes as standard with a five-speed manual
gearbox, whilst the 3.0i has the new six-speed manual gearbox introduced
recently on 3 Series Coupe and Convertible models.

Customers can also specify the optional five-speed automatic gearbox featuring
Steptronic manual shifting, carried over from the 3 Series range, or BMW's
latest six-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG). Featuring shift-by-wire
technology, the driver can change gear seamlessly either using steering wheel
mounted F1-style paddles or the reassuringly stubby gear lever. Gear change
and clutch actuation are controlled by gearbox electronics and a hydraulic
system, allowing the driver to 'flat change' in lightning gearshift times of
150 milliseconds, with absolute precision and consistency. Flattering those
who haven't quite perfected the art of 'heel and toe', the system will blip the
throttle to deliver perfect down changes, matching engine speed with the
selected gear ratio.

The SMG system also has a full-power acceleration mode in its armoury. With
DDC activated by pressing the Sport button and subsequently deactivating DSC,
the engine's full power is unleashed when the revs reach 4,000 rpm and the
system 'dumps' the clutch, guaranteeing the Z4's 0-62mph sprint in 5.9
seconds. For those appreciating the system's full flexibility, SMG also has a
Drive mode, acting effectively as an automatic.

Chassis and Body:
The bedrock of the Z4's impressive performance and agility is its high degree
of body stiffness and almost perfect 50-50 weight distribution. The new car
boasts a torsional stiffness of 14,500 Nm / degree - almost three times as
stiff as the outgoing Z3 (5,600 Nm / degree). This is achieved by a number of
innovative techniques. For the first time on any BMW, the visible outer
A-pillar panel is a load-bearing component, with a reinforced tube sandwiched
between it and the inner plate. Additionally, the body shell incorporates a V
strut brace within the engine compartment, connecting the two suspension
turrets and the engine bulkhead below the windscreen. As a result, the Z4
requires no further vibration damping.

Being a pure driver's roadster, handling has been optimised by reducing the
car's unsprung masses, with the share of light alloys on the suspension now
amounting to approximately 60 kilos, or 20 per cent of the overall weight. In
addition, the rear track has been widened by 40mm. The Z4 3.0i is also fitted
with BMW's M Technic sports suspension as standard (optional on 2.5i), lowering
the body by 15 mm (0.6 inches). In terms of design, the front and rear axle is
a spring strut structure with twin-sleeve gas pressure struts.

A reduction in suspension weight also assists the overall mass. The Z4 2.5i
weighs in at a svelte 1,335kgs, with the 3.0i tipping the scales at 1,365kgs.
This is 25kgs less than the outgoing Z3 3.0i despite larger dimensions, larger
wheels and a six-speed gearbox.

Steering:
Introduced as another first is BMW's new Electric Power Steering (EPS). With
no need for weighty hydraulic steering components, the new system adopts an
electric motor connected to the one-piece steering column for steering
assistance. Using a torque sensor to measure the driver steering input,
information is transmitted to the electric motor that in turn provides the
desired steering angle to the tie bars. Software is used to optimise steering
damper effect and feedback, and when the Sport button is pressed activating
DDC, the level of steering assistance is reduced, giving a more direct steering
feel. Unlike hydraulic systems, EPS uses no engine power and owners can save
up to one litre of fuel per 250 miles (400kms).

Safety:
Occupant safety is controlled by BMW's Advanced Safety Electronics (ASE), with
a centrally-mounted safety and information module linked to two 'satellite'
sensors located in the left and right B pillar. Each module independently
detects and measures any impact and with the choice of four airbags, deploys
the appropriate restraint. Information is passed by a 'byteflight' optical
network, giving a faster data transfer and consequent reaction time, causing
the following:

... Deactivation of the electric fuel pump
... Activation of cabin lighting and hazard warning lights
... Deactivating the alternator
... Pyrotechnically breaking the safety battery terminal

Protection of all occupants is important, and should the driver wish to carry a
roadster prodigy in a child seat on the passenger seat, the passenger airbag
can be deactivated using the ignition key and switch located in the side of the
dashboard. Occupants are notified of the deactivation by a light on the
transmission tunnel.

Punctures are less of a problem for the Z4 owner as 'run flat' tyres are
standard across the range of 16", 17" or optional 18" wheels. Using a
reinforced sidewall and a more temperature-resistant rubber compound, the car
can be driven safely for up to 90 miles (150 kms) at a reduced speed of 50 mph
(80 km/h).

The Market:
Launched on 19 June 2003, the new Z4 2.5i will be priced at £26,655.00, with
the 3.0i available at £30,855.00, and benefit from insurance ratings of 18A for
the Z4 2.5i, with the 3.0i coming in at 19A. Many BMW dealers are already
reporting sales of the Z4 well into 2004. Interestingly, residual values of
the outgoing Z3 remain strong - a 1 year-old, 10,000 mile Z3 1.8i recently sold
at auction for 114 per cent of its 'book' price.

Alongside the traditional dealer and media marketing, BMW has supported the Z4
through a second series of innovative internet-based short films, under the

actor Clive Owen stars as the un-named Z4 driver alongside such household names
as Gary Oldman and James Brown.

The BMW Z4 certainly means business: This is exactly what a BMW roadster must
look like, this is exactly how it must drive. The Z4 is a breathtaking
experience on the road appealing to all your senses as a purist automobile for
the connoisseur. It not only represents one side of BMW's new design language,
but also sets new roadster standards in many areas: Self-confident, powerful,
sporting and aesthetic, the Z4 offers extremely precise and safe handling
ensuring driving pleasure of the most supreme calibre beyond comparison in the
market.

BMW's new two-seater is making its debut as the Z4 3.0i with a 170 kW/231 bhp
powerful straight-six and six-speed manual gearbox and as the Z4 2.5i featuring
a 141 kW/192 bhp straight-six combined with a five-speed manual gearbox. Both
models will be entering the US market in autumn 2002, arriving in Europe in
spring 2003.

Design: unique proportions in an interplay of different shapes:

Through its proportions alone, the Z4 is a truly remarkable car: The long,
sleek and stretched-out engine compartment, the snug cockpit wrapped around the
driver and passenger, and the short, muscular rear end - there is hardly any
other roadster these days with comparable dimensions. Wheelbase measuring 2,495
millimetres or 98.2 inches and overall width of 1,781 millimetres or 70.1
inches set a new standard in this class, while the overall length of 4,091
millimetres or 161.1 inches is both sporting and compact. The result is a
genuine athlete resting firmly on the road with short overhangs front and rear
and without one single gram of fat.

The Z4 has two waistlines. The lower waistline extends from the engine
compartment lid across the door, first moving down and then up again towards
the rear. This creates an impression of powerful self-confidence and at the
same time is reminiscent of the classic, door-less roadster of the past, giving
this two-seater its unmistakable character. The upper waistline, by contrast,
extends in a powerful arch from the beginning of the compartment lid all the
way to the rear. And the door line extending upwards to the rear at a slight
angle is equally exciting and fascinating in its look.

This design is truly unique: Particularly striking features are the surfaces,
edges, rounded corners and drawn-in areas plastically visible and interacting
among themselves, creating a rapid interplay of concave and convex design. The
result is exceptional lines, shadows and reflections again emphasizing the
particular proportions of the BMW Z4.

The roof has a special folding mechanism:

The Z4 is the first open-air BMW to feature a folding roof with a special
folding mechanism. This folding mechanism takes up very little space and allows
the frontmost part of the roof to extend like a cover over the soft top,
merging flush with the body of the car. As a result, the Z4 requires neither a
tonneau cover nor a roof lid. And as an option BMW?s new two-seater is
available as the only roadster in the world with fully automatic operation of
the roof.

The drivetrain: prize-winning six-cylinders:

The Z4 is entering the market with prize-winning power units, BMW's
straight-six once again winning the highest awards this year in international
engine contests. Appropriately, this two-seater comes with the two
top-of-the-range engines, the 2.5-litre developing maximum output of 141 kW/192
bhp at 6,000 rpm and the 3.0-litre offering maximum output of 170 kW/231 bhp at
5,900 rpm. On the road this means performance justifying the term sports car in
every respect: Acceleration from 0?100 km/h comes in 7.0 and, respectively, 5.9
seconds, top speed is 235 km/h (146 mph) and, respectively, 250 km/h (155 mph).

The power button: DDC Dynamic Drive Control:

The BMW Z4 comes with a very special button for the particularly dedicated
driver, giving the engine even more 'kick' at the command of the driver:
Available as an optional extra, DDC Dynamic Drive Control calls up maximum
engine power even earlier than usual in the Sports mode, engine management
following an even more dynamic and sporting gas pedal control line. To reflect
this enhanced response of the engine, the steering also becomes even more
direct and sporting, speed-related servo assistance offered by the Electric
Power Steering (EPS) following an even more sporting and dynamic control map.
And if the car is fitted with SMG or automatic transmission as an option, DDC
revs up the gears even higher and makes the gearshift even faster.

New: EPS Electric Power Steering:

The Z4 is the first BMW with electric instead of hydraulic power steering. With
the steering being controlled by software, EPS offers a much higher standard of
flexibility in its steering characteristics and ensures optimum harmony of the
steering damper effect and feedback to the driver. Contrary to conventional
hydraulic steering, EPS has the further advantage of not requiring any energy
when driving straight ahead without any movement of the steering wheel. In
practice, this saves up to one litre on every 400 kilometres or 250 miles as
compared with conventional hydraulic steering.

Five- and six-gear manual gearbox featured as standard - SMG or automatic
transmission as an option:

The Z4 2.5i comes as standard with a five-speed manual gearbox, the Z4 3.0i
features six-speed manual transmission. Both engines are available as an option
with six-speed SMG. Featuring shift-by-wire technology, SMG allows the driver
to shift gears either with the conventional shift lever or by means of two
paddles on the steering wheel, enabling him to concentrate full on the actual
process of motoring. SMG appeals in particular to the sporting and ambitious
driver, allowing him to shift gears in just 0.15 seconds and conducting the
operation time and again with utmost precision, since the driver is not
required to press or release the clutch.

The suspension: handling at its best:

The superior dynamics, agility and sportiness of the Z4 are also the result of
the very stiff bodyshell and the supreme suspension. Whilst the latter has been
carried over in its basic configuration from the 3 Series, the suspension has
been modified in its set-up, focusing on even more dynamic handling than, say,
the suspension of the 3 Series coupé. As the starting point, the perfect
balance of weight on the two axles provides all the ingredients for harmonious
behaviour on the road. A further factor is rear-wheel drive offering decisive
benefits particularly in a sports car - for example by keeping the steering
absolutely free of drive forces, ensuring superb steering precision and
providing absolutely clear feedback.

DSC with DTC: even safer driving pleasure all the way to the limit:

The BMW Z4 comes as standard with DSC Dynamic Stability Control, even though
the suspension of this outstanding roadster offers safety reserves so
sufficient that this safety system is only required in really dangerous
situations and not as some kind of enhancement for the suspension.

A further important point is that the new DTC Dynamic Traction Control allows
the driver of the Z4 to adjust DSC even more individually to his personal
dynamic driving requirements: At the touch of a button, DTC provides an
increase in slip on the rear wheels geared to actual driving conditions. Fitted
with DTC, the Z4 offers the same agility as a sports car featuring a 'classic'
limited-slip differential, without forfeiting the usual DSC functions under
extreme conditions.

The bodyshell: extra-strong and extra-light all in one:

The Z4 was designed from the outset as a genuine roadster. And this you
will feel from the start, torsional stiffness of 14,500 Nm/degree exceeding the
torsional stiffness of the former Z3 (5,600 Nm/degree) more than twice.
Never before has a convertible or roadster offered torsional stiffness of this
standard brilliantly solving the conflict of interests between saloon-like
smoothness and vibration control, on the one hand, and a dynamic, sporting
suspension set-up, on the other.

Passive safety: interacting protection systems:

Quite literally, the backbone for the high standard of passive safety offered
to the driver and passenger is the extremely stable body structure using
high-strength steel wherever appropriate. The A-pillars form a rollbar at the
front supplemented by two steel rollbars behind the seats. The driver and
passenger are protect-ed in the Z4 by four airbags fitted as standard, with a
two additional knee air-bags on the US model. The airbags are masterminded by
the new Advanced Safety Electronics (ASE) incorporating lightwave conductors
for the first time and allowing BMW to once again set the standard in safety
technology.

No more dangerous stops: runflat tyres featured as standard:

The Z4 is fitted as standard with runflat tyres avoiding the risk of forcing
the driver to stop somewhere on the road: Even after a puncture, the driver is
generally able to proceed to a service station without having to stop his car
at a dangerous spot on the road and change the wheel. A further advantage is
that all control systems remain fully functional even in the case of a
breakdown. These runflat tyres are monitored by an air pressure warning system
featured as standard, quickly recognising changes in air pressure in one or
several tyres by checking out the speed of rotation and giving the driver an
optical warning.

Optional extras: from bi-xenon headlights all the way to the navigation system:

The BMW Z4 is available with a whole range of optional extras. Examples are
bi-xenon headlights as well as a choice of two HiFi systems developed and
optimised especially for the Z4 to provide individual musical enjoyment of the
highest standard. The top-end HiFi audio system available as an option even
introduces carver technology into the automobile, a special technical system
generating extremely high sound pressure from the volume available.

The radio navigation system integrated in the instrument panel uses DVD data
for the first time in a BMW, this very dense memory system allowing a longer
geographic range. The Professional navigation system comes additionally with a
retracting colour monitor excellent to read thanks to the latest display
technology. Both navigation systems may be combined with a firmly installed
telephone also available as an option.

World Debut of the BMW Z4, BMW 730d and BMW 740d Diesels at the Paris Motor

on the BMW stand, intelligent Adaptive Light Control (ALC) revolutionising

The world debut of the BMW Z4 marks the highlight of BMW's appearance at the
Paris Motor Show. This open two-seater designed for dynamic driving pleasure
without the slightest compromise offers pure enjoyment on the road. Through its
design alone, bearing out and accentuating BMW's new design language, the Z4 is
truly outstanding also in its looks.
With the market launch of the BMW Z4 3.0i (170 kW/231 bhp) and the
BMW Z4 2.5i (141 kW/192 bhp) commencing in autumn of this year in the USA and
in spring 2003 in Europe, this roadster absolutely thrilling in every respect
underlines BMW's special competence and position in the sports car segment. And

The BMW 730d and 740d - setting a new standard in diesel engine technology.
BMW has been the leader in diesel engine technology for almost two decades, an
achievement clearly confirmed by some 1,500,000 units of the 3, 5 and
7 Series BMW diesels sold throughout this period.
In Paris BMW's new six- and 8-cylinder diesel engines in the 730d and 740d are
now opening up a new dimension in diesel motoring, offering unprecedented
performance and agility combined with supreme comfort and almost sensational
economy. The latest common rail technology injects fuel with a pressure now
increased to 1600 bar, fuel thus entering the system and being atomised even
faster than before in the interest of extra power and fuel economy.
The six-cylinder power unit in the BMW 730d develops maximum output of 160
kW/218 bhp, with maximum torque of 500 Newton-metres or 369 lb-ft between 2000
and 2750 rpm. Fuel consumption, in turn, is a mere 8.5 litres or 33.2 mpg Imp
in the EU combined cycle.
The 8-cylinder in the BMW 740d develops maximum output of 190 kW/258 bhp and
maximum torque of 600 Newton-metres or 442 lb-ft between 1900 and 2500 rpm,
with average fuel consumption in the EU cycle of 9.7 litres/100 km or 29.1 mpg
Imp.
Both engines easily outperform the EU3 emission standard and they are the first
diesel engines in the world to be combined with six-speed automatic
transmission. And it almost goes without saying that the two diesel models come
with all the innovative technologies and features to be admired in the
petrol-engined models of the still young BMW 7 Series, including Dynamic Drive
active suspension, Electronic Damper Control (EDC-C), the ISIS airbag safety
system and the iDrive driver control concept, to mention just the most
outstanding features.

Adaptive Light Control (ALC) - BMW revolutionises the world of light.
With BMW's appearance in Paris clearly demonstrating the benchmark in
technology in the world of motoring today, BMW at the same time is presenting a
revolution for the car of tomorrow: Creating intelligent Adaptive Light Control
(ALC), BMW's engineers have succeeded in illuminating the road ahead for the
BMW driver taking a bend and following winding roads. This BMW innovation about
to enter production standard improves the recognition of objects and obstacles
in the dark by up to 34 per cent, thus ensuring a significant enhancement of
traffic safety.
This anticipative illumination of the road ahead is made possible by sensors
recognising changes in the car's direction before they even happen. In the
first phase of development, anticipation of the road ahead is based on data
covering the car's current speed, its steering angle and the yaw rate. In a
further stage of development, additional information such as the course of the
road will be provided through the GPS navigation system.

BMW has revealed the first official pictures of the new BMW Z4 roadster. The
new car will be shown for the first time at the Paris motor show in September
of this year. The Z4 will be on sale in the UK in the summer of 2003.

Design
Characterised by convex and concave surfaces, hard edges and gentle curvature,
the Z4 displays BMW's new design language. It has all the classic hallmarks of
a roadster - a long and sleek bonnet, a long wheelbase with short overhangs,
wide track and a low centre of gravity, all of which create a purposeful,
sporting impression. Luggage space has been increased to provide the new Z4
with a boot capacity of up to 260 litres, enough space for two golf bags.

Performance
The Z4 will be available with two six-cylinder engines. The 3.0i has 231 bhp
and a top speed of 155 mph and the 2.5i, 192 bhp and a maximum speed of 146
mph. The Z4 3.0i features a new six speed manual gearbox. SSG, BMW's
sequential manual gearbox will be available as an option on both engine
models. This second generation system features a modified six-speed
transmission and enables the driver to make instant gearshifts via paddles on
the steering wheel or with the gear selector.

Engineered to set new standards in its class, the BMW Z4 has been designed with
a focus on agility and handling. Featuring the modified rear axle of the BMW 3
Series the new Z4 has 50:50 front : rear weight distribution, fade-free high
performance brakes, run-flat tyres and DSC III as standard.

New for the Z4 is Dynamic Drive Control or DDC which is activated by pressing
the 'sport' button on the centre console. DDC allows the Z4 engine management
system to deliver an even sportier accelerator pedal response curve and change
the steering weight to a more direct feel.

Specification
The new Z4 will be available with an extensive list of options including a
satellite navigation system that retracts fully into the instrument panel, car
telephone and state of the art hi-fi equipment. Standard features include
leather sports steering wheel, a rollover safety system and Z folding fully
automatic roof with heated glass rear window.
