Munich. The new features set to enhance the BMW model line-up from autumn 2023 centre on the latest advances in terms of digitalisation. The new BMW X1 and BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will both be equipped with the upgraded BMW iDrive featuring QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9 from November 2023. The BMW Digital Premium offering, with its highly customisable selection of online-based services, is also being introduced in both model series at the same time. Plus, extra digital services will be made available for a large number of current models via Remote Software Upgrade. Meanwhile, an extended range of functions will also add to the appeal of the My BMW App.

When it comes to automated driving systems, the highlight is without doubt the new Highway Assistant, which is also due to become available for models in the BMW 7 Series range from March 2024 following its premiere in the new 5 Series Sedan. Autumn 2023 will also bring additions to the choice of exterior colours and light-alloy wheels for selected models.

More intuitive and easier to use than ever: new BMW iDrive with QuickSelect.

From November 2023, the upgraded BMW iDrive with QuickSelect will be fitted as standard in all model variants of the new BMW X1, the all-electric BMW iX1 and the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, enabling numerous vehicle functions to be operated even more intuitively and easily. The latest incarnation of the display and control/operation system is based on BMW Operating System 9 and is packaged together with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

The new BMW iDrive features a redesigned home screen and the QuickSelect rapid-access tech, bringing an improved menu structure that takes its cue from consumer electronics devices. The new home screen displays the navigation system’s map view or other individually configurable graphics in the control display at all times. On the same level, function icons appear in a vertical arrangement on the driver’s side of the display. Drivers can switch between icons with a vertical swipe of the finger. The QuickSelect feature allows the function selected in this way to be activated directly without having to enter a submenu.

BMW Operating System 9 was developed in-house by the BMW Group and is based on an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack for the first time. It provides the basis for a broader offering of digital content that serves information and entertainment, shorter function update cycles and improved accessibility to a host of specific online services.

New BMW Digital Premium offering: customised selection of gaming, video & music streaming and other online services.

The new BMW Digital Premium offering will be brought out in Germany in November 2023 alongside the introduction of BMW Operating System 9. It will be available as an option for BMW X1, BMW iX1 and BMW 2 Series Active Tourer models and can be ordered from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store, which has now been expanded with the addition of further third-party apps. This means customers can enjoy in-car use of all the apps available in their country, e.g. for video and music streaming, news or gaming, as part of a package. In addition to this, BMW Digital Premium also includes enhanced navigation functions along with added customisation options thanks to extra My Modes, for instance.

As with all other ConnectedDrive Upgrades, BMW Digital Premium can be obtained from the ConnectedDrive Store either on the website, in the My BMW App or directly in the car. And, from November 2023, it will be even easier for customers to add ConnectedDrive Upgrades, as it will then be possible to not just select them directly from their vehicle, but to pay for them at the same time. In other words, instead of being redirected to the app or internet to complete their order, customers will be able to carry out the entire process, including payment, from the comfort of their car.

This new offering is designed to allow customers to put together a customised selection of digital services from the growing variety on offer – one that is perfectly suited to their personal requirements. BMW Digital Premium is available in Germany, for example, for €9.98 a month or from mid-2024 (provisionally) for an annual fee of €99 (both including VAT). The package also covers data usage for all digital services and the apps available from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store, including music and video streaming. Customers can take advantage of a free three-month trial period that will allow them to sample all the BMW Digital Premium services and content.

A new form of in-car gaming unique in the automotive sector is one of the highlights of BMW Digital Premium. BMW is presenting a wide selection of casual games that use a smartphone as the controller in collaboration with the AirConsole gaming platform. The games can be played in either solo or multiplayer mode when the vehicle is stationary as a way of passing the time while e.g. waiting for the high-voltage battery in the BMW iX1 or the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer plug-in hybrid models to recharge. About ten titles will initially be available to play, including racing, sport, quiz and skill games, and the range will continue to grow.

Besides audio streaming, BMW Digital Premium also lets the occupants enjoy a wide variety of video streaming services (powered by Xperi TiVo) on the control display while the car is stationary. This offers customers access to an ever-growing selection of aggregated video content, such as news and live or on-demand streaming of movies and series, for instance, along with country-specific content. Available with BMW Digital Premium in the USA, UK, South Korea, France, Italy, Germany and Spain, the Video App will feature, among other things, the Pluto, Bloomberg Television, Deutsche Welle, Al Jazeera and TED portals. In Germany, the package will additionally include the tagesschau news service app as well as the popular streaming service JOYN. Country-specific content will also be offered from the outset in Italy and the USA. The portfolio of video streaming platforms will keep evolving and will be gradually rolled out to other countries too.

Enhanced navigation functions, additional My Modes.

One of the key benefits of BMW Digital Premium is the enhanced functionality of the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps. For example, real-time traffic information (RTTI) with colour coding shows how freely traffic is flowing across the entire map area, even if route guidance is not activated. Other functions include 3D visualisation of buildings and surrounding elements in the map view and extended information on parking facilities. The driver is also proactively notified of the current traffic situation and estimated time of arrival when setting out to destinations they drive to regularly. If necessary, the system will even propose an alternative route. Turn-off instructions and lane recommendations are shown in realistic form in both the information display and the optional BMW Head-Up Display.

In Germany and other European countries, BMW Digital Premium offers the additional benefit of allowing drivers to pay parking fees directly from their vehicle in parking zones that support this payment method. And drivers in Germany also have the option of settling fuel bills digitally from their car after refuelling at participating filling stations. In both cases, payment is made using a credit card that is first registered with the partner company Parkopedia via the My BMW App.

In addition, BMW Digital Premium adds Expressive Mode, Relax Mode and Digital Art Mode to the choice of My Modes, opening up still greater scope for customising the driving experience. And it also brings new variants for both the Welcome Light sequence and the graphics visualising the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. 

Current Remote Software Upgrades for enhanced driving pleasure.

The Remote Software Upgrades bring existing digital functions right up to date. At the same time, new features and improvements to quality can also be imported into the car over the air. The latest in-car gaming and video-streaming services for BMW models will be made available in this way for the majority of vehicles with BMW Operating System 8.5 in autumn 2023.

Customers also receive notification of the Remote Software Upgrades in the My BMW App. Another option is for upgrades to be downloaded via the My BMW App and transferred to the vehicle before initiating the installation process there.

Extra functions for the My BMW App.

The My BMW App for smartphones provides customers with a direct link to their car and, depending on the vehicle configuration and country, offers them the benefit of numerous functions designed to make day-to-day mobility even more straightforward. This includes information transferred to the user’s smartphone on their vehicle’s status, servicing requirements, charging status and range, as well as remote access to functions for vehicle locating, locking and unlocking the doors, climate control and monitoring the car’s immediate vicinity. Charging-optimised routes can also be planned via the My BMW App and destination addresses sent from a smartphone to the vehicle’s navigation system. From autumn 2023, it will also be possible to enter mid-journey stops as part of the process.

And from March 2024, customers with compatible Android smartphones will also be able to use the My BMW App to operate the Remote Control Parking and Manoeuvre Assistant functions available with the optional Parking Assistant Professional and BMW Digital Key Plus. The My BMW App will also indicate the status of the alarm system on suitably equipped vehicles and show how it can be fully or partially activated.

New Highway Assistant also coming soon for the BMW 7 Series.

BMW has become the first carmaker to gain approval from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority for semi-automated driving at speeds up to 130 km/h (81 mph). As a result, the BMW Highway Assistant already available in the USA and Canada is now set to become an extremely innovative component of the optional Driving Assistant Professional package in Germany too. The new function lets the driver take their hands off the steering wheel and put them in a comfortable position while driving. First launched in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, it will also become available to use in the BMW 7 Series luxury sedan from spring 2024.

The BMW Highway Assistant can operate on multi-lane roads with structurally separated carriageways, with the function’s availability indicated to the driver in the information display. On suitably designated stretches of road, the driver is able to take their hands off the steering wheel for longer periods and position them comfortably, provided they continue to pay attention to what is happening on the road and are able to take over the steering again at any time. The Active Lane Change Assistant with eye confirmation included as part of the new BMW Highway Assistant adds another layer to the automated driving experience. As soon as the traffic situation permits, it is capable of performing the necessary steering movements for an overtaking manoeuvre, for example, and adjusting the vehicle’s speed as required. Plus, for the first time, the driver is able to initiate a lane change suggested by this system by simply looking in the exterior mirror to confirm it.

Additional exterior colour for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, new 21-inch light-alloy wheels for the 7 Series.

A new shade is already being added to the selection of exterior colours for the new BMW 5 Series Sedan, just a short time after its launch. The Fire Red metallic paint finish will be made available for the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Sedan (electric power consumption combined: 20.6 – 18.2 kWh/100 km in the WLTP cycle) from November 2023, as well as for all other model variants of the new business sedan specified with the M Sport package.

A further highly exclusive design of light-alloy wheel will be added to the range of optional extras for the BMW 7 Series from November 2023. At the same time, 21-inch BMW Individual light-alloy wheels in multi-spoke design will also be available for all model variants of the luxury sedan. They have a bi-colour finish and are fitted with mixed-size tyres.

All of the stated model variants, equipment features, technical data and fuel/electric power consumption and emissions figures relate to the offering in the German market.

BMW has added five more awards to its impressive tally for 2023, including the coveted Fleet Manufacturer of the Year for a second consecutive year at the Business Car Awards. Further to the headline award, the BMW X1, 3 Series, i4 and 5 Series were each recognised as best in their respective classes.

Martyn Collins, Editor, Business Car Magazine presented BMW with Fleet Manufacturer of the Year, and commented, “We continue to be impressed by BMW’s choice of models, that continue to build on their strong fleet record – particularly with the choice of EVs that continues to grow at pace. Then there’s support for company car drivers, with innovations for the ‘Inside Edge’ rewards programme, and the launch of ‘Corporate Certified’ this year, which is all about improving the retailer experience.”

Launched in 2022, the third generation of BMW X1 offers fully electric models for the first time and features the latest in connectivity. Walking away with the Best Premium Medium SUV, judges stated “The latest X1 impresses with its extra practicality, its performance, plus the electric range for EV and plug-in hybrid models. On top of the added space, all X1’s are well-equipped and good to drive.”

The BMW i4 claims its sixth award for 2023, taking the win for the Best Electric Car over £40,000 for the second year running at the Business Car Awards. Judges said that “despite the choice of models in this class growing massively over the last year, we felt none of them could match the i4’s reliable electric range, driver appeal and practical hatchback design.” Collins also added that the lower entry price of the eDrive35 model will allow more drivers to experience the BMW i4 moving forward.

The BMW 3 Series continues to impress with the model retaining its Best Premium Car title for the fifth consecutive year. Business Car said, “the BMW 3 Series remains head and shoulders above the competition in the premium class.”

For the fourth consecutive year, the BMW 5 Series has also been named Best Executive Car by Business Car, with judges believing the current model “is still the best car in its class.”

Maintaining the company’s award-winning reputation across the industry in 2023, BMW Group UK and its latest models continued to make waves, scooping up numerous prestigious awards in June and July, with battery electric models garnering significant attention. BMW Group UK takes home six awards at the Auto Express New Car Awards 2023

BMW Group UK proudly took home six awards from the Auto Express New Car Awards 2023, demonstrating its continued excellence across a variety of categories and reinforcing the breadth of its model portfolio. BMW secured five awards across numerous categories and MINI garnered an additional victory with the MINI Convertible.

The third-generation BMW X1, launched in the summer of 2022, led its class according to Auto Express by winning the Small Premium SUV of the Year award. With its distinctive design, increased interior space, premium ambience, and high-level standard specification.

Introduced in November 2021, the i4— the first fully-electric BMW Gran Coupé—continues to make an impression nearly two years post-launch, claiming the Premium Car of the Year award. Another of the BMW brand’s fully-electric models, the BMW iX, impressed judges with its luxurious and contemporary interior, earning the Best Large Company Car of the Year accolade.

The brand’s flagship model, the BMW i7, already boasting four major awards since its UK launch at the end of 2022, now adds Auto Express’ Luxury Car of the Year to its roster. Offering a cutting-edge digital experience with the BMW Theatre Screen and BMW Interaction Bar, the BMW i7 combines striking style with a luxurious interior to lead its segment.

The all-new BMW M2, which launched recently in the UK, received its first accolade in the UK at the Auto Express New Car Awards 2023, securing the Performance Car of the Year title. Building on its powerful predecessor, the latest M2 embodies the pure joy of driving by fusing classic high-performance sports car elements with cutting-edge technology.

Finally, the MINI Convertible emerged victorious in the Convertible of the Year category for the sixth time—a testament to the model's enduring appeal. Available in the UK with a high standard specification, and also offered as a BEV – a first for its kind.

BMW iX3 boasts Best Premium Electric Car at the Auto Trader New Car Awards 2023

At the seventh annual Auto Trader New Car Awards in June, the BMW iX3 clinched the award for the Best Premium Electric Car. The awards are decided by over 220,000 UK car owners who completed an online survey sharing exactly what they think of their car, with their thoughts and opinions determining the final category winners.

Erin Baker, Auto Trader’s Editorial Director, said: “The iX3 is all the electric SUV anyone needs, with a plush interior, spirited performance and that legendary BMW ride and handling. One owner summed it up perfectly by saying: ‘The driving experience is second to none, it’s comfortable, fast, smooth and quiet. Love it.’ Huge congrats, BMW.”

BMW i4 shines in the Autovista Group Residual Value Awards

In June, the BMW i4 secured the Compact and Large Battery-Electric Vehicle (BEV) category at the inaugural Autovista Group Residual Value Awards. The awards, which assess data from 17 different European markets, recognise the models with superior value retention. Judges chose i4 as the winner of this category due to its strong performance across all major markets, with the model's success attributed to its sleek silhouette, enjoyable driving experience, strong family identity, internal space on par with the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé and impressive range.

The Autovista24 team commended the i4's design, emphasising that it looks more like a conventional BMW than an exclusively battery-electric model, broadening its appeal to a wide range of drivers in both new and used car markets.

Powertrain and driving experience. Most powerful four-cylinder unit from the latest generation of engines, M-specific chassis technology, BMW xDrive.

A performance model with unmistakable M character is taking its place at the top of the new BMW X1 range. The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive builds on the spontaneous driving pleasure that lies at the heart of the compact Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) concept with an injection of the dynamism, agility and precision for which M models are renowned. Its four-cylinder unit is part of the new modular generation of BMW Group Efficient Dynamics engines and uses M TwinPower Turbo technology to record maximum output of 221 kW/300 hp in Europe and an even higher figure of 233 kW/317 hp in the USA and other selected markets.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive races to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in 5.4 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). M-specific chassis technology – including the option of M Compound brakes for the first time on a performance model – teams up with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive to deliver sublime performance characteristics. The sharper character of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is clearly apparent both inside and out. The new range-topping model comes with the type of exclusive design and equipment features originally reserved for high-performance cars from BMW M GmbH. These include the two pairs of exhaust tailpipes and the optional M Sport seats with illuminated M logo.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive also blazes a trail when it comes to digital technology: it is among the first models to feature the new BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9. The market launch of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive will get underway in October 2023 in the USA. Deliveries in Europe will commence in November 2023. The flagship model will be built at BMW Group Plant Regensburg, together with all other variants of the new BMW X1, including the all-electric BMW iX1.

New four-cylinder engine with extra power.

The most potent incarnation of the four-cylinder petrol unit from the latest modular generation of engines delivers the raw power that the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive turns into captivating performance. Various innovations set these new engines apart from the preceding generation. They include the adoption of the Miller cycle, redesigned intake ports and combustion chambers, and changes to the camshaft timing, injection, ignition system and exhaust gas routing.

Among the 2.0-litre unit’s M-specific highlights are a new, extremely robust crankshaft drive, an optimised system of oil supply for the pistons with cooling channels, and main bearing shells and caps carried over from the latest-generation six-cylinder in-line petrol engine. Its M TwinPower Turbo technology has been upgraded by increasing the performance of the turbocharging system and indirect charge air cooling at the same time as introducing dual injection for mixture preparation as a function of load point. It is also equipped with VANOS variable camshaft timing with optimised oil supply for the actuator and VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing. The engine generates its maximum output between 5,750 and 6,500 rpm, while peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) is on tap from 2,000 up to 4,500 rpm.

The new four-cylinder unit’s spirited power delivery is accompanied by an emotionally rich soundtrack from the M-specific exhaust system. The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is the first performance model from BMW M GmbH whose exhaust gases are channelled via two pairs of twin tailpipes. Nestled neatly into the left and right of the rear apron, they are a signature feature of high-performance models from BMW M and have now been adopted by the most powerful member of the compact SAV range.

Seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch and M Sport Boost.

The seven-speed Steptronic transmission fitted in the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive stands out with its ultra-sharp shift action. Shift paddles on the steering wheel allow quick manual interventions in the gear selection process.

The M Sport Boost function is also available for exceptionally rapid bursts of speed. Here, all the powertrain and chassis systems are switched to their sportiest setting when the driver pulls on the left-hand shift paddle for at least one second.

Supreme traction and agility: BMW xDrive all-wheel drive, mechanical limited-slip differential at the front axle.

The BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system ensures that drive power is distributed between the front and rear wheels as required in any situation. The system is interlinked with the chassis control tech at all times. A hang-on clutch with electro-hydraulic control allows drive torque to be directed to the rear wheels as well in a matter of a few milliseconds, providing significantly greater traction, directional stability and sporting prowess in the BMW mould.

The all-wheel-drive system is assisted in its task by the mechanical limited-slip differential built into the seven-speed Steptronic transmission of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive. This serves to limit the difference in speed between the front wheels. With a locking factor of up to 26 percent, it increases traction over loose terrain or in adverse weather conditions at the same time as boosting agility and handling dynamics when taking corners at speed.

Adaptive M suspension and sport steering as standard.

Standard specification for the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive includes adaptive M suspension, whose mechanically controlled adjustable and frequency-selective dampers benefit both agility and long-distance comfort. Pressure peaks inside the dampers are smoothed out with the help of additional valves that are active on the rebound side. As a result, the system offers comfortable response when absorbing minor bumps in the road surface combined with sporty damper characteristics in dynamic driving situations.

The M-specific chassis technology on the performance model additionally brings about a 15-millimetre drop in ride height compared with other BMW X1 model variants. The sport steering that likewise comes as standard pairs Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance with a very direct rack ratio.

Integrated braking system with the option of M Compound brakes.

The integrated braking system fitted in the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive generates a degree of stopping power that is matched exactly to the driver’s inputs, while also providing excellent feedback via the brake pedal. It brings together the brake activation, brake booster and braking control functions within a compact module, while an electric actuator is used to trigger the required brake pressure.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is the first performance model from BMW M GmbH to be offered with the option of M Compound brakes, comprising four-piston, fixed-calliper brakes with 385-millimetre drilled discs at the front wheels and single-piston, floating-calliper units with integrated parking brake and 330-millimetre discs at the rear. The inner-vented brake discs are composed of a grey cast iron ring and an aluminium chamber. The M Compound brakes offer very comfortable braking, superb feel and stable stopping power even under high loads. In addition to this, weight has been minimised and unsprung masses are substantially lower compared with conventional braking systems. The brake callipers are painted grey and bear the M logo.

Near-actuator wheel slip limitation for sharper agility.

A particularly prominent contributor – alongside the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system – to the BMW X1 M35i xDrive’s ever-present combination of unshakable handling poise and supreme agility is near-actuator wheel slip limitation technology. Here, the traction control function is integrated into the engine management. This eliminates the long signal paths to the DSC control unit, meaning that the corrective inputs are applied up to ten times faster than in conventional systems and with exceptional precision. Near-actuator wheel slip limitation thereby ensures optimum traction (even on slippery roads), unwavering straight-line composure under hard acceleration, and excellent directional stability in corners.

19-inch M light-alloy wheels as standard.

The standard light-alloy wheels are fitted with tyres that are 20 millimetres wider than on the outgoing model to give the range-topper even greater dynamic handling potential. 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in an exclusive twin-spoke design and sport tyres can both be found on the options list.

Design and equipment. An exclusive window into signature M performance.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive stands apart from its stablemates in the compact SAV line-up not only on account of its superior performance attributes, but also with its distinctive design. M-specific design cues reflect the elite sporting character of the new range-topping model with an intensity unmatched in any previous performance model from BMW M GmbH.

The interior of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive already offers an arrestingly sporting ambience in its standard specification, and its distinctive aura can be enhanced further still with exclusive options such as M Sport seats. The M-specific content on the BMW Curved Display – a fully digital screen grouping formed by the 10.25-inch information display and the control display with a screen diagonal of 10.7 inches – sharpens the driver’s focus on the sporty driving experience. Added to which, the most powerful variant of the compact SAV can also be specified with almost the full range of options offered for the BMW X1 when it comes to optimising driving pleasure, comfort and individuality.

Standalone design with familiar M details: M kidney grille with horizontal double bars, M exterior mirror caps, quartet of exhaust tailpipes.

The M-specific design cues of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive are testimony to the technical requirements of an exceptionally sporty car in terms of cooling air provision and aerodynamic balance. A front apron with particularly large air intakes ensures the engine, transmission and brakes can continue to work within their optimum temperature windows at all times, even under hard driving. Prominent side skirt extensions, a model-specific roof spoiler and a rear apron with diffuser inlay vividly showcase the performance-led character of the new flagship model.

The BMW M kidney grille of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive bears the M logo. The grille also sports horizontal double bars – a detail previously only found on high-performance models from BMW M GmbH. When viewing the range-topping model from the side, black M exterior mirror caps with twin-stalk design indicate its elevated status. Another identifying feature comes in the form of the four exhaust tailpipes – each with a diameter of 80 millimetres – integrated into the model-specific rear apron. As on the high-performance models referred to above, these pairs of tailpipes positioned to the far left and right of the BMW X1 M35i xDrive’s rear end signal with unmistakable clarity the presence of the finest engine in that particular model range.

M-specific interior, optionally with M Sport seats.

The likewise M-specific cockpit design also plays its part in creating a high-intensity performance experience inside the cabin. Highlights include an Alcantara-covered instrument panel, Aluminium Hexacube Dark interior trim elements, an anthracite-coloured headliner, M door sill trim, M pedals, the M-specific graphics of the BMW Curved Display – and, optionally, the BMW Head-Up Display – and an M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles.

Standard equipment for the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive also brings black Veganza/Alcantara sport seats with blue contrast stitching. These can alternatively be ordered as an option trimmed in Vernasca leather with special diamond quilting. Also on the options list are M Sport seats. These offer a wide range of electrical adjustment (including memory function for the driver’s seat), have integral head restraints and feature an illuminated M logo in the upper section of the backrests.

The intensely sporty interior ambience goes hand in hand with unrestricted functionality. The rear seat backrest of the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive splits and folds 40 : 20 : 40, and the tilt angle of each section can also be adjusted individually. The optional forward/back adjustment for the rear seats brings even greater variability. The boot capacity can be increased from 540 litres to a maximum 1,600 litres.

Sophisticated options enable precise individualisation.

A model-specific M Sport package Pro is available as an option for the BMW X1 M35i xDrive. It adds M high-gloss Shadowline exterior trim with extended elements and M lights Shadowline to the car’s already expressive exterior design. Also included are the M Sport braking system with red callipers, plus M Sport seats and M seat belts.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive comes as standard with two-zone automatic climate control, BMW Live Cockpit Plus including the BMW Maps navigation system, M roof rails in Black high-gloss, automatic tailgate operation, and a rain sensor with automatic headlight activation, plus four USB-C ports and two 12V power sockets. Among the other options available for customers to lift the car’s premium character to an even higher level are an interior and exterior mirror package, ambient lighting, a panoramic glass roof and the Harman Kardon sound system.

A wide array of cutting-edge systems enabling automated driving and parking can also be specified for the performance model. Already fitted as standard are the front-collision warning system, Cruise Control with brake function and the Parking Assistant including Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing Assistant. The list of optional features, meanwhile, includes the Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, Active Navigation and the exit warning function, as well as the Surround View, Remote 3D View, BMW Drive Recorder and Remote Theft Recorder functions. Existing functions can be upgraded by means of the Remote Software Upgrades facility, which also makes it possible to add new functions (availability depends on the hardware fitted in the vehicle and the market conditions).

Display and control/operation system, connectivity. Updated BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9.

The new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is one of the brand’s first models to feature the updated version of the control/operation system BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9. In order to make selecting and operating numerous functions and digital services even more intuitive and comfortable, the latest generation of BMW iDrive offers a newly designed home screen and QuickSelect functionality. This brings an improved menu structure that takes its cues from consumer electronics devices. By showing the right information in the right place, the new BMW iDrive enhances the car’s focused, assured driving experience.

The updated BMW iDrive system with QuickSelect in the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is underpinned by BMW Operating System 9. This technology enables a broader offering of digital content for information and entertainment, shorter function update cycles and improved access to a host of specific online services. BMW iDrive with QuickSelect also teams up with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, and is therefore geared squarely to operation using the touchscreen and natural language.

The new home screen of BMW Operating System 9 displays the navigation system’s map view or other individually configurable graphics at all times. On the same level, function icons appear in a vertical arrangement on the driver’s side of the control display. The driver can then move between them with a vertical swipe of the finger. QuickSelect rapid-access tech allows the requested function to be accessed directly and without having to pass through a submenu. And once the relevant settings have been chosen, a quick tap on the home icon at the lower edge of the display is all it takes to return to the home screen. Alongside the home symbol now are the symbols for direct access to the climate control menu, the All Apps menu, and Apple CarPlay^® / Android Auto™, if activated.

The new, flat menu structure makes activating functions and settings much more convenient. The on-board digital content – just like the hardware, in the form of the BMW Curved Display – is designed to enhance the driver focus for which BMW is renowned. To ensure intuitive operation while on the move, the graphical interface and menu structure feature a layout developed by BMW Group Design that is both consistent and characteristic of the brand.

Range of digital services can be expanded as desired.

Among the standard features of the updated BMW iDrive in the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive is the latest generation of the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps. Added to which, the services and apps already introduced in the new BMW X1 are also available with BMW Operating System 9. For example, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and other voice-controlled assistants, the BMW ConnectedDrive Store, BMW Remote Software Upgrades, smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay^® / Android Auto™, and My Modes can also be used in the new BMW X1 M35i xDrive. Specifying the optional Personal e-SIM also ensures the car’s antenna system is set up to work with 5G mobile technology.

BMW Operating System 9 also lays the groundwork for a highly customisable selection of additional digital services. The new BMW Digital Premium offering gives customers access to an expanded BMW ConnectedDrive Store. This means they can use all the apps available in their country, for e.g. music streaming, news or gaming, on a subscription basis. BMW Digital Premium also features enhanced BMW Maps navigation functions and extended functionality for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, plus additional My Modes. Optional benefits include data usage for all digital services and the apps available from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store, including music streaming. BMW Digital Premium can be downloaded in the car from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store, via the My BMW App or on the web. Customers can choose from monthly or annual payment plans, both of which provide maximum flexibility when putting together a selection of digital services tailored to their personal requirements.

Munich. The independent safety experts at the European consumer protection institute Euro NCAP awarded both the BMW X1 Sports Activity Vehicle and the modern all-rounder in the premium compact segment, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, the highest rating of five stars. In the demanding test procedure, both vehicles impressed with outstanding occupant protection in collisions of various types, effective protection for pedestrians and cyclists, and effective accident avoidance systems.

The extensive standard equipment featuring safety-relevant driver assistance systems decisively contributed to the 5-star rating. Above all, the latest generation of front collision warning with braking function provides an additional plus in safety in urban traffic. It can now also detect pedestrians and cyclists approaching parallel to the lane from behind or in front when turning right, effectively helping to avoid a collision with weaker road users. In addition, the new system warns of oncoming traffic when turning left. All of the driver assistance systems used in the new BMW X1 and the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer are among the best on the market and impressed the Euro NCAP safety experts with their range of functions and reliable level of response.

The new BMW X1 and the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer convinced the experts with their innovative systems in the area of passive safety. Both models feature a centre airbag between the driver and front passenger seats as standard. This system, used for the first time in BMW models in the compact segment, was rated to be extremely effective in the test. It is the latest component of the BMW integrated safety concept, which is being advanced constantly and which, in addition to highly resilient support structures and precisely designed deformation paths, also includes a model-specific combination of precisely coordinated restraint systems.

In various collision tests, this integrated safety concept proved to guarantee a high level of protection against injury at all times in both models, regardless of the size and seating position of the occupants.  In both the front and rear seats, the headrests and seats of the new BMW X1 and the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer effectively protect against cervical injuries that can be triggered by a rear-end collision, according to Euro NCAP. In addition, the test experts highlighted the standard equipment featured by both models with the intelligent emergency call and an emergency braking system for avoiding secondary collisions.

To reduce the risk of injury to pedestrians and cyclists, the new BMW X1 and new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer feature active engine compartment lids. In the event of an impact, the engine compartment lids are raised by means of pyrotechnic actuators to create additional deformation space between them and the hard components underneath. The system proved to be reliable and effective at different speeds in the Euro NCAP safety test.

The ratings of the Euro NCAP testing institute are a benchmark for accident safety recognised Europe-wide and the safety level is being raised constantly. Only new vehicles that offer excellent impact protection and are also well equipped with comprehensive and practical technology for accident avoidance receive the highest rating of 5 stars.

Fuel consumption, CO₂ emission figures and power consumption were measured using the methods required according to Regulation VO (EC) 2007/715 as amended. They refer to vehicles on the German automotive market. For ranges, the WLTP figures take into account the effects of any optional equipment.

Featuring a new distinctive design, a high level of electrification across the range and the latest in connectivity, the new BMW X1 builds on the concept of a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) for the premium compact segment.

An expanded standard specification, increased interior spaciousness with a premium ambience, new BMW Operating System 8 and BMW Curved Display, and a large selection of automated driving and parking systems ensure the new BMW X1 stands out against its rivals.

In its third model generation, the BMW X1 offers fully electric driving for the first time. This new addition to a rapidly growing vehicle segment will complement the brand’s existing battery-electric models and make driving an all-electric BMW accessible to an even wider audience.

In the UK, the new BMW X1 is available with two petrol engine options, two diesel engines and two plug-in hybrid options. The range is completed by the new BMW iX1 xDrive30, the BMW Group’s first premium compact model based on a flexible vehicle architecture to feature an all-electric drive system.

Customers can choose between three carefully curated models, which offer generous levels of technology and equipment across the board. Sport, xLine and M Sport choices are available in combination with most engine variants, while the X1 xDrive23i, X1 xDrive30e and iX1 xDrive30 are available exclusively in xLine or M Sport.

All BMW X1 are built at BMW Group Plant Regensburg, along with the high-voltage batteries for the BMW iX1 xDrive30. The new BMW X1 sees the BMW Group take another step towards its target of establishing the most sustainable supply chain within the automotive industry, with a focus on renewable energy during manufacturing processes and the increased use of secondary and renewable materials compared with its predecessor.

Increased proportions set-off by striking new front end design

The new BMW X1 is larger than its predecessor – by 53mm in length to 4,500mm, 24mm in width to 1,845mm and 44mm in height to 1,642mm. Its wheelbase is 2,692mm, 22mm longer than before, while its track widths have increased by 31mm to 1,592mm at the front and 1,593mm at the rear.

At the centre of the new front end design stands the large, almost square BMW kidney grille, its contouring highlighted by the three-dimensional chrome surround. The grille bars are finished in Black high-gloss as standard. In the outer areas of the lower air intake, large chrome strips accentuate the classy design of the front end.

The new BMW X1 comes as standard with slim LED headlights for low and high beam that extend into the sides of the car. A distinctive graphic splits the headlights into three units for the low beam, high beam and daytime driving lights, the latter including the indicators.

Dynamically stretched silhouette, powerful rear section

Crisply sculpted surfaces for the wheel arches, doors and shoulders of the body generate an expressive interplay of light and shadow. A dynamically rising character line connects the front and rear wheel arches, while the long roofline flows into a spoiler extending out to the rear. Together with the shoulder-line above the flush door openers, extending from the front wheel arches into the rear lights, this gives the silhouette a stretched feel.

At the rear, horizontal lines, the narrow rear window and flared wheel arches emphasise the body’s width. Chrome side details and a prominent underride protection element in the rear apron reprise styling cues from the front end. All functions of the rear lights work using LED technology as standard. If the Adaptive LED Headlights are specified, the rear lights also illuminate in a striking “L” shape. These optional rear lights are also recognisable from the distinctive patterning in the sections extending into the sides of the body.

Athletic and self-assured: the Sport model

The Sport model includes: 17-inch alloy wheels with a lightning grey finish, Quartz Silver matt interior elements, High-gloss Shadowline exterior detailing, High-gloss Shadowline M Roof Rails, Front Sport seats and Cloth Anthracite seat upholstery throughout the vehicle.

Robust looks and an air of sophistication: the xLine model

The specific design elements of the xLine model include exclusive 18-inch light-alloy wheels, dark grey body edging, BMW Individual Exterior Line Satin Aluminium and exterior mirror caps in dark grey. The BMW kidney grille is finished in Pearl-effect Chrome, as are the side trim pieces and stylistic underride protection. xLine specification also includes aluminium door sill covers, Sensatec perforated seat surfaces, illuminated interior trim strips in Black high-gloss and Sensatec surfaces for the door shoulders and upper instrument panel.

M Sport model adds a dynamic edge

Large cooling air inlets in the sides of the front bumper and a striking rear apron with diffuser mark out the M Sport model, together with exclusive 19-inch M light-alloy wheels, adaptive M suspension and M High-gloss Shadowline trim. Interior appointments include sport seats, anthracite-coloured headliner and M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles.

Large selection of exterior colour shades and 20-inch light-alloy wheels available for the first time

Customers can choose from two solid and eight metallic paint finishes for the new BMW X1, as well as a Frozen paint option with shimmering matt surface from BMW Individual, not to mention a wide variety of BMW Individual special paint finishes.

Sport variants of the new BMW X1 come as standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, with 18-inch light-alloy wheels as standard on xLine cars. M Sport models feature 19-inch light-alloy wheels in a bi-colour finish, although both xLine and M Sport can be optionally specified with wheels up to 20 inches – a first for the BMW X1.

More interior space combined with cutting-edge digital technology

The raised seating position, generous amounts of space, and cutting-edge functionality mark out the new BMW X1. The geometry of the interior and a large number of details take their cues from the interior concept of the BMW iX. Key features include the slender instrument panel, a stage for the BMW Curved Display, and a “floating” armrest with integral controls.

The BMW Curved Display is framed by solid-looking trim pieces which extend out to the doors. Four interior trim variants, including the new open-pore fine eucalyptus wood and Aluminium Hexacube for the M Sport model, allow owners to individualise the design.

In the front section of the centre console is space for two cup holders and an optional illuminated smartphone tray (standard for M Sport models). Secured by a movable clasp, phones can be placed upright and visible to the driver and front passenger, and charged wirelessly.

The new BMW Operating System 8 and innovative digital services

The user experience on board the new BMW X1 is underpinned by the seamless interaction between the BMW Curved Display, voice control, the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel and the BMW Head-Up Display (offered as part of the Technology Plus Pack). At the heart of the new BMW X1 is the standard BMW Curved Display formed by a 10.25-inch information display and a 10.7-inch control display. The screens merge into a single unit behind a continuous glass surface curved towards the driver. The state-of-the-art graphics have been designed with a smartphone-style appearance, making them perfect for intuitive touch control.

Newly developed seats offer even better comfort

The newly developed seats offer optimised comfort over long distances and extended functionality, with their prominent bolsters and adjustability of seat angle and depth. The optional Electric seat adjustment with memory function is available for the front seats as part of the Comfort Pack.

The rear compartment of the new BMW X1 includes three full-sized seats with increased comfort. ISOFIX anchor points are integrated into the outer seats, and the 40:20:40 split backrests can be folded down to expand boot capacity. The fore-and-aft adjustment of the rear seat bench is optionally available, providing even greater versatility by sliding the read seats up to 13cm allowing boot capacity to expand from 540 litres to 1,600 litres (on combustion-engine models).

A trailer tow hitch is optionally available on all models and is now operated electrically at the touch of a button. The maximum permitted trailer load is as much as 2,000kg, depending on the model variant (BMW iX1: 1,200kg – provisional value).

Premium interior ambience with room for extensive individualisation

The standard Sport leather steering wheel has high-quality accent trim in Pearl-effect Chrome, large thumb rests and multifunction buttons. An M leather steering wheel with three-spoke design and shift paddles is standard on M Sport models.

The surfaces of the instrument panel and front door shoulders come as standard in Sensatec with eye-catching contrast stitching on all xLine and M Sport models. The mirror package adds light projections from the exterior mirrors, an electric folding function for the exterior mirrors and an automatic dimming function for the interior and driver’s side exterior mirror (Standard for M Sport models or available as part of the Technology Pack).

The standard interior lighting incorporates the footwells, door openers, centre console storage compartments, reading lights, ambient light from the headliner and the door courtesy lights. The ambient lighting’s distribution, brightness and colour scheme can be configured in the iDrive menu, while the Dynamic interior light function indicates an incoming phone call or an open door with pulsating light signals.

With a glass surface measuring around one square metre, the optional panoramic glass sunroof floods the interior of the new BMW X1 with light and fresh air. The roller blind cover for the glass roof now has a multi-layer design and is also electrically operated.

The standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus includes the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps and a six-speaker audio system with a 100 watt amplifier. The optional Harman Kardon Sound System raises the number of speakers to 12 and the amplifier output to 205 watts.

BMW Operating System 8 unlocks additional skills for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Naturally formulated spoken instructions can now be used to adjust the air conditioning, open a window or operate the optional panoramic glass roof. Selected functions of the driver assistance systems in the new BMW X1 can likewise be voice controlled.

The cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system included in the standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus offers enhanced performance and accuracy along with simplified destination entry. In the BMW iX1, as soon as the destination has been entered, a charging-optimised route will be calculated if the vehicle’s current range is not enough to reach the destination.

Newly-orchestrated Welcome Scenario

The engaging user experience starts before the driver has even reached the vehicle thanks to a newly devised Welcome Scenario. It starts with an orchestrated lighting effect using the exterior and interior lights, with the vehicle automatically unlocking when the driver is about 1.5 metres away (feature standard with M Sport models and available as part of Comfort Access within the Technology pack for Sport and xLine models). As they get into the car, the BMW Curved Display plays a choreographed start-up animation and shows a customised personal greeting as well as useful information. In addition to this, the BMW ID settings are loaded and the smartphone connected.

Introducing the BMW iX1: the first pure-electric compact SAV

The all-electric BMW iX1 xDrive30 is powered by one electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear, each combined with power electronics and transmission in a single, compact housing. The drive units deliver a combined output of 313hp (including temporary boost) and overall torque of 494Nm.

The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology also comprises the car’s charging technology and the 64.7kWh high-voltage battery positioned flat within the vehicle’s underbody. The battery’s high energy density and the drive system’s efficiency achieve combined power consumption of 18.1 – 17.0kWh per 100km (WLTP) and a driving range of 259 – 270 miles.

Combined Charging Unit and improved charging software

The Combined Charging Unit in the BMW iX1 xDrive30 enables single- and three-phase AC charging up to 11kW, optionally increased to 22kW (three-phase AC). This allows the battery to be fully recharged from empty in 6.5 hours as standard and just 3 hours 45 minutes as an option. DC recharging at up to 130kW makes it possible to boost the battery level from 10 to 80 per cent in 29 minutes, or increase range by 75 miles in just 10 minutes.

As in the BMW i7, the charging software has been further refined. Once the battery reaches a higher charge level, the new process drops the charging rate smoothly instead of the previous “stepped” curve, resulting in even shorter charging times.

An optimised cooling strategy for DC charging improves the durability of the battery. Alternating phases of full and partial cooling power are used to prevent cell temperatures dropping too low during fast charging, shortening charging times and reducing ageing. Customised settings for individual charge points can be stored and automatically recalled on the next visit, while preheating can be started manually on approach to a DC charging station.

Two plug-in hybrid models

Two plug-in hybrids have joined the new BMW X1 model line-up, with their electric drive components the product of fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology. The BMW X1 xDrive30e and BMW X1 xDrive25e both feature an integrated electric drive unit powering the rear wheels, combined with a three-cylinder petrol engine that drives the front wheels via the seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch.

Now positioned flat in the vehicle floor, the fifth-generation lithium-ion batteries have an increased usable content of 14.2kWh. Maximum charging capacity has climbed from 3.7kW to 7.4kW, enabling the high-voltage battery to be fully recharged from empty in 2.5 hours. When hooked up to a conventional domestic power socket, a full vehicle charge is completed within eight hours. Electric range is now up to 50 – 56 miles in the WLTP cycle.

BMW Charging included as standard for BMW iX1 and plug-in hybrid variants

The key benefit of the BMW Charging offering for public charging stations is the attractive kilowatt hour tariffs for AC and DC charging throughout the UK and Europe. The network run by the BMW Group’s joint venture IONITY also forms part of the BMW Charging network. Almost 16,000 charging points are included in the UK and Ireland, with the monthly fee for BMW Charging and IONITY waived for the first 12 months for retail customers. BMW iX1 and BMW X1 plug-in hybrid models in Europe are supplied with a BMW Charging Card, a charging cable (mode 3) and the Flexible Fast Charger. In addition to a third-generation BMW Wallbox, other home charging products are also offered in cooperation with expert partners.

Efficiency through electrification: 48V mild hybrid technology

Second-generation 48V mild hybrid technology in the new BMW X1 sDrive20i, BMW X1 xDrive23i and BMW X1 xDrive23d comprises a 19hp electric motor integrated into the transmission. It acts as a starter generator, enabling more comfortable operation of the Start/Stop and coasting functions, but can also deliver additional drive power when pulling away or overtaking.

Adaptive recuperation with intelligent control

The 48V battery located under the luggage compartment is charged by adaptive recuperation in overrun and braking phases. As well as the electric motor, it also supplies the car’s 12V electrical system via a voltage transformer. The system uses data from the navigation system – even when route guidance is not activated – and driver assistance system sensors to adapt deceleration to the prevailing situation.

The drive system of the fully electric BMW iX1 can also use adaptive recuperation to recover kinetic energy during a journey and feed it into the high-voltage battery. Recuperation of up to 120kW can be generated via the brake pedal.

Petrol engines with greater fuel efficiency and lower emissions

Powered by a 3-cylinder petrol engine, the BMW X1 sDrive20i benefits from a higher level of efficiency and a sporty power delivery thanks to the 48V mild hybrid technology. The mild hybrid system consists of an electric motor integrated into the 7-speed Steptronic transmission with dual clutch, which acts as a starter generator and can both relieve and support the combustion engine.

The BMW X1 xDrive23i is powered by a four-cylinder petrol engine from the BMW Group Efficient Dynamics engine family. Innovations include the Miller cycle (shortening the opening time of the intake valves), redesigned intake ports and combustion chambers, and an ignition system featuring an active coil with integrated electronics. Mixture preparation is optimised using a new dual injection system. In addition to the existing high-pressure injection system, some of the fuel is now injected into the combustion chambers via a low-pressure system. The effectiveness of the turbocharging system and intercooler has also been increased.

Enhanced diesel engines with improved efficiency

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel units fitted in the new BMW X1 xDrive23d and BMW X1 sDrive18d have also undergone an extensive upgrade, with low-friction pistons made from tempered steel, a graphite coating for the piston skirts and an active oil separator with map-regulated electric drive. Improvements have also been made to the efficiency of the two-stage turbocharging and to the common-rail injection and exhaust gas recirculation systems.

Seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch as standard

All petrol and diesel engines for the new BMW X1 are mated to a seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch as standard. This latest generation automatic transmission features fully electric actuation, widened gear ratio spread and greater internal efficiency, while also tailoring the shift strategy to the route topography and enabling the coasting function to be used in all My Modes except Sport Mode in the transmission position S. The transmission automatically shifts into P when the engine is switched off and, if the car is parked on a slope, the electric parking brake is automatically applied.

M Sport models come with gearshift paddles on the steering wheel which enable rapid manual gear changes and include the Sport Boost function – when the driver pulls the left-hand shift paddle for at least a second, all powertrain and chassis settings are primed to maximise response.

BMW xDrive: assured power transfer for all types of drive system

The BMW xDrive system intelligently controls the distribution of power to all four wheels to maximise traction, agility and directional stability in all weather and road conditions. The two electric motors acting on the front and rear axles in the BMW iX1 xDrive30 create an electric all-wheel-drive system. Interaction between the two motors is enhanced by a unique drive torque control system integrated into the Combined Charging Unit, which is interlinked with the DSC and the AWD-specific version of the near-actuator wheel slip limitation function.

The all-wheel drive in the BMW X1 xDrive23i and BMW X1 xDrive23d is linked with the chassis control systems. A power take-off bevel gear on the front axle, a dual-section propeller shaft and a rear axle differential with an electro-hydraulically controlled hang-on clutch are used to split drive torque front to rear as the situation demands.

Newly developed componentry for front and rear axle

All components of the single-joint spring strut axle at the front have been redeveloped almost from scratch. The new set-up delivers agile turn-in response and steering feel that is largely unaffected by torque steer. The supports for the hydromounts are now made from aluminium, saving around 3kg, while the caster offset has been increased by 15 per cent, with a positive effect on both steering feedback and straight-line stability.

The modular three-link rear axle on all model variants features a bespoke design with high rigidity. It is partnered by a rear-axle subframe with a rigid mounting for precise wheel guidance even under high lateral acceleration. The springs and dampers take up less space thanks to their separate arrangement, freeing up room for rear passengers and luggage. Anti-roll bar mounts with high preload on both axles improves not just roll stabilisation, but also steering precision during cornering, while a new wheel bearing design minimises friction.

The rear-axle subframe’s flexible construction enables the new BMW X1 to accommodate various drive systems.

Consequently, the rear-axle subframe on the BMW iX1 and plug-in hybrid models features bespoke mounts for the electric drive unit powering the rear wheels. The suspension and damping systems in the new BMW X1 have also undergone an extensive upgrade to enhance long-distance comfort. For the first time, the front axle has been equipped with extra, lift-related damping using an additional sleeve on the dampers, reducing body movement over small bumps and ensuring excellent behaviour in corners.

Adaptive M suspension with frequency-selective damping

Adaptive M suspension is standard for all M Sport models, including the plug-in hybrids and iX1, and is fitted as standard on the BMW iX1 xDrive30 xLine. Agility and comfort benefit from mechanically controlled adjustable and frequency-selective dampers. Pressure peaks inside the dampers are smoothed out by additional valves active on the rebound side. The specially designed damper system also brings about a 15mm drop in ride height.

Sport steering is part of the adaptive M suspension specification on all variants, with a more direct rack ratio, along with the Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance included with the standard steering.

Near-actuator wheel slip limitation for extremely quick, precise response
The new BMW X1 also now comes with near-actuator wheel slip limitation to maximise the car’s agility and composure in challenging driving situations. Integrated into the engine management to eliminate the long signal paths to the DSC control unit, corrective inputs can be applied up to ten times faster than in conventional systems.

In addition to ABS and Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), the DSC system includes a variety of stabilising functions and the drive-off assistant. The Performance Control function gives the car even more agile handling by varying the distribution of drive torque to the front wheels according to the situation at hand. Directional stability is optimised during heavy braking on challenging surfaces by applying a steering impulse to help the driver correct the car’s line.

Intelligent lightweight design enhances agility and efficiency
An intelligent mix of materials minimises vehicle weight while enhancing the body’s rigidity and crash safety. Hot-stamped steels and aluminium alloys used for the passenger safety cell are supplemented by multi-phase steels for extra reinforcement. In the front of the BMW iX1 and plug-in hybrid models, an additional shear panel and a stiff connection with the high-voltage battery’s housing, which is designed as a load-bearing component, increase body rigidity. In addition, the all-electric model has a special brace between the spring strut towers, enhancing turn-in response. The aluminium bonnet cuts weight at the front, while lightweight plastic supports for the front and rear doors bring further weight savings.

Segment-leading aerodynamics

The new BMW X1 includes targeted aerodynamic measures to enhance efficiency. The BMW iX1 benefits from reduced drag from a closed-off BMW kidney grille, while all other X1 variants have an active air flap system for the kidney grille and lower intake in the front apron, which adapts its responses to the need for cooling and ambient temperatures.

The flow of air around the car is guided by air curtains in the outer sections of the front apron, flush-fitting door handles, aerodynamically optimised exterior mirrors and light-alloy wheels, a combination of a roof spoiler and side air deflectors around the rear window, a diffuser in the lower section of the rear apron and a virtually fully sealed underbody with precisely defined air guides and exhaust tailpipes integrated out of sight. Together, these features bring the car’s drag coefficient (Cd) down as far as 0.26.

Also reduced is the wind noise created by the body. An optimised sealing concept around the doors and tailgate, new exterior mirrors, and acoustically optimised tyres increase interior comfort, while improved engine and transmission mounts improve vibration isolation.

Model-specific mounting for the electric motor, power electronics and transmission – arranged in a single housing – increase the acoustic comfort of the BMW iX1 and plug-in hybrid models, along with a soundproofed and double-decoupled refrigerant compressor.

Integrated braking system improves stopping distances

The new BMW X1 is equipped with an integrated braking system that brings together the brake activation, brake booster and braking control functions within a compact module. The use of an electric actuator means braking requests from the driver assistance systems are translated into extremely short stopping distances for improved active safety.

The braking system in the new X1 employs single-piston floating-calliper disc brakes at the front and rear. A brake pad wear indicator is included as standard and provides information on remaining service in the operating system’s relevant menu.

State-of-the-art driver assistance systems include front-collision warning as standard

The new BMW X1 is fitted as standard with the latest version of the front-collision warning system with brake intervention. It comprises features such as Collision Warning, pedestrian and cyclist warning with braking function, and Crossroads Warning. Cruise Control with brake function, Speed Limit Info with no-overtaking indicator and pre-warning, manual Speed Limit Assist and the Evasion Assistant are likewise all fitted as standard. Lane Departure Warning with lane return also comes as standard and is capable of suppressing course correction on narrow roads to allow the driver to move over for an oncoming vehicle.

The standard Active Park Distance Control (PDC) issues alerts and automatic brake inputs to help avoid collisions with obstacles to the front, sides and rear of the vehicle. Also standard are a Reversing Assist Camera and the Reversing Assistant. The latest Parking Assistant is also standard and helps select and park in spaces parallel or perpendicular to the road, with the system now also able to take bearings from the kerb.

My BMW App enables remote control charging for BMW iX1 and BMW X1 plug-in hybrids
Extending the features available in the My BMW App, BMW iX1 and BMW X1 plug-in hybrid owners are able to remotely control charging of the battery. The preferred departure time can be entered to display the anticipated charge level at that point. If the vehicle is plugged-in, charging can be started or halted at any time from the app, regardless of the charge level.

Standard specification for the new BMW X1 also comprises wireless smartphone integration via both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades function keeps the BMW X1 up to date with the latest software, with upgrades ranging from new services to improved vehicle functions.

The BMW Digital Key Plus, as part of Comfort Access, enables customers to automatically lock and unlock their new BMW X1 with their Apple iPhone when close to the vehicle. Using the My BMW App, the owner can also share it – and therefore access to the vehicle – with up to five other users.

Emotionally rich sound experience with BMW IconicSounds Electric

BMW IconicSounds Electric treats customers to soundscapes developed as part of a collaboration between the BMW Group and two-time Academy Award-winning film score composer Hans Zimmer. The character of the sound alters according to the vehicle setting chosen with the My Modes button. A drive sound emitted externally at low speeds helps to protect pedestrians by making them aware that the car is approaching.

A model-specific sound experience is also available inside the new BMW X1 xDrive23i. Its drive note is transmitted into the interior via the speaker system in a way that reflects the driving situation and the driving mode selected.

Fully electric BMW iX1 has an exemplary carbon footprint

A rigorous approach is taken to reducing the CO₂ emissions released during production of the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology employed in the new BMW iX1 and BMW X1 plug-in hybrid variants. In the supply chain, green electricity for battery cell production and increased use of secondary raw materials cuts CO₂ emissions by around 20 per cent compared.

Increased use of secondary materials and renewable raw materials

Among other sustainability goals set out by the BMW Group is the increased use of secondary raw materials. At present, vehicles are manufactured using nearly 30 per cent recycled and reused material on average. The ‘secondary first’ approach is intended to gradually increase this figure to 50 per cent. In fact, the proportion of secondary aluminium used in manufacturing the castings for the new BMW X1 is already up to as much as 70 per cent.

High-quality recycled plastics are used for many components in the new BMW X1, with around 20 per cent of the plastic parts made from mono-material, including underbody panelling, wheel arch covers, mounting elements for trim parts and a host of unlaminated elements in the interior. The floor mats are 100 per cent polyester, with 55 per cent recycled material. The floor coverings feature a synthetic yarn produced from recycled nylon waste – Econyl – made from fishing nets recovered from the sea along with worn flooring and residual waste from plastics manufacturing.

Electricity from renewable resources used in component and vehicle manufacture

CO₂ emissions from vehicle production have been lowered by over 70 per cent since 2006. All plants in the BMW Group’s international production network have been operating a net carbon-neutral policy since 2021. Starting in 2024, the new BMW X1 will also benefit from the switch to cast aluminium wheels manufactured entirely using green electricity. This will see the BMW Group take another step towards its target of establishing the most sustainable supply chain in the entire automotive industry.

The BMW Group’s ongoing commitment to electrified technology is exemplified in its continuous development of electrified powertrains. Thanks to recent advances in battery cell technology, new BMW plug-in hybrid models are extending the possibilities of locally emissions-free driving – both in the city and beyond. With the introduction of the new BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e**, which both take full advantage of the latest-generation lithium-ion battery technology, BMW customers now have even more choice in the premium compact segment

A highly efficient electric drive and a latest-generation lithium-ion battery enable an electrically powered range of up to 35 miles in the two new plug-in hybrid models. With average fuel consumption of 134.5 – 148.7 mpg* and CO2 emissions between 43 and 48 grams per kilometre*, both models set a benchmark within their competitive fields. The hybrid-specific all-wheel drive system delivers fast and precise distribution of power between the front and rear wheels, ensuring a high level of driving agility.

The plug-in hybrid system of the new BMW X1 xDrive 25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e consists of a 1.5 litre 3-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and an electric drive specially developed for this model, derived from the BMW Group eDrive modular technology. The petrol engine mobilises a peak output of 125hp and a maximum torque of 220Nm. It transfers its power to a 6-speed Steptronic transmission and drives the front wheels. The electric motor generates an output of 95hp and delivers 165Nm of torque to the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission. This makes for a hybrid specific all-wheel drive, which gives these models a unique level of agility in their class. The electric motor’s highly responsive power delivery provides maximum torque spontaneously from standstill, enabling the driver to react extremely quickly to changing driving conditions. In addition, the position of the electric motor above the rear axle contributes to the balanced axle load distribution. The intelligently controlled interaction between the two power units provide maximum driving stability, ride comfort and dynamic response.

Together, the combustion engine and electric motor produce a system output of 220 hp. The maximum system torque of both drive units is 385Nm. The new BMW X1 xDrive25e accelerates from 0 to 63mph in 6.9 seconds, whilst the BMW X2 xDrive25e does the same in 6.8 seconds. In addition, the electric boost provided by the drive system ensures intense sporty flair when required. The top speed of the new BMW X1 xDrive25e is 120 mph, and 121mph for the BMW X2 xDrive25e.

With the very latest high-voltage battery cell technology, the new BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e possess generous reserves of electrical energy enabling the driver to conduct most of their everyday travel locally emissions-free. The latest-generation lithium-ion battery has a gross energy content of 10 kWh. This allows for an electrically powered range of between 33 and 35 miles in both the BMW X1 xDrive25e and BMW X2 xDrive25e. The high-voltage battery can be charged at conventional household sockets using the standard-equipment charging cable. An empty battery can be fully charged in around five hours in this way. It only takes 3.8 hours for the battery to reach 80 percent of its total capacity. Using a BMW i Wallbox, the relevant charging operation from 0 to 100 percent takes less than 3.2 hours. Eighty percent of total capacity is already reached after 2.4 hours. The charging socket is located under a separate flap on the front left side wall of the car.

The driver can use the eDrive button on the centre console to influence the drive system’s operating mode. In the AUTO eDRIVE standard setting, the intelligent drive system ensures optimum interaction between the two power units in all driving situations. Navigation data is also used to manage the plug-in hybrid system to increase the efficiency as well as driving pleasure. When navigation guidance is activated, the anticipatory energy management can also take into account the route profile for controlling the drive system. The MAX eDrive mode can be activated for maximum use of the electric drive.  In this mode, the new BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e reach a top speed of 84 mph. In addition there is also the SAVE BATTERY mode which enables the driver to maintain the charging state of the high-voltage battery while driving or to increase it by means of recuperation. Using this mode, battery capacity can be saved for later use, for example when arriving at your destination in purely electric mode.

The new BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e feature acoustic pedestrian protection as standard. When driving electrically at speeds of up to 19 mph, an unmistakable sound designed specifically for electrified BMW models is generated to alert other road users to the approaching car without impairing the acoustic comfort of the vehicle occupants.

The standard equipment of the two compact BMW X models with plug-in hybrid drive also includes 17-inch light alloy wheels, 2-zone automatic air conditioning as well Sports Seats and LED headlights in the UK market. The interior can be pre-conditioned remotely via BMW Connected using a smartphone. The new BMW X1 xDrive25e is available in Sport Line, xLine and M Sport in the UK. Virtually all options available on the conventionally powered BMW X1 are available for the plug-in hybrid models.

The positioning of the high-voltage battery underneath the rear seats leads to a very low centre of gravity, which optimises the agility of the BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e. In the new BMW X1 xDrive25e luggage compartment capacity is 450 litres, with standard 40:20:40 split folding backrests enabling the capacity to be increased to 1,470 litres. A trailer tow hitch with detachable ball is optionally available for the new BMW X1 xDrive25e, with a maximum trailer load of 750 kilograms.

With the extension of the range in the premium compact segment the BMW Group’s model offensive is gaining further momentum in the area of plug-in hybrid models. The current selection comprises the MINI Countryman Plug-in Hybrid, the BMW 225xe Active Tourer, BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 7 Series, BMW X3 xDrive30e and BMW X5 xDrive45e.

As a pioneer in electric mobility, BMW intends to have more than one million vehicles with electrified drive on the road by the end of 2021, by which point 25 percent of the vehicles sold by the BMW Group in Europe are expected to feature an electric drive. By 2025 this figure is scheduled to reach 33 percent and 50 percent by 2030. The BMW Group plans to extend its portfolio to 25 electrified vehicles by 2023.

The X1 has proved to be a huge success and this latest version builds on that with bold styling, exceptional handling and the introduction of an all-new plug-in hybrid model.

Since it was launched in 2015 the current-generation model has gone from strength to strength. In 2018, not only the highest-selling BMW X model worldwide, it also led the way in its segment as a whole over the same time period.

The new BMW X1 will underscore its leading position in the market with three- and four-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo engines, standout driving characteristics, BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, extensive infotainment options and an updated range of BMW ConnectedDrive Services.

There is more to come, however. Next year the petrol and diesel models will be joined for the first time by the xDrive25e plug-in hybrid model.

Exterior design
The design of the new BMW X1 strikes a more imposing chord when compared with the outgoing model as evidenced by the new, larger BMW kidney grille – where the two intakes now merge in the middle – and the sharper light iconography of the new standard LED headlights. The front bumper now boasts integral LED foglamps and all model variants feature larger air intakes.

Another highlight can be found at the driver’s-side exterior mirror, which projects a two-tone LED ‘X1’ image when the car is unlocked. This also includes illumination of the door handle recess in order to make getting into and out of the BMW X1 that much simpler by making it easier to spot obstacles such as bumps or puddles. This function is standard on xLine and M Sport models and optional on SE and Sport models.

At the rear, redesigned inlays on the apron are a standard feature and adopt the body colour of the BMW X1, while on Sport models the rear apron’s underbody protection is now finished in High-gloss Black.

Eye-catching LED rear lights and tailpipes
The LED rear lights of the BMW X1 have also been redesigned with a single LED bar drawing the familiar L signature from side to side. Another head-turning feature of the BMW X1 is the new exhaust tailpipes. Their diameter has increased from 70mm to 90mm. The four-cylinder variants get twin tailpipes.

Three new exterior colours, four new wheel designs
There are four model variants: SE, Sport, xLine and M Sport and each stands apart with its own unique looks and equipment to match. Newly available for the BMW X1 are the exterior colour shades Jucaro metallic. Exclusively for xLine and M Sport models are the new  Misano Blue metallic  and BMW Individual Storm Bay metallic.

The BMW X1 SE comes as standard with 17-inch wheels, while the model update adds four new wheel designs to the options list. Sport adds 18-inch double-spoke light-alloy wheels, xLine has standard-fit 18-inch bi-colour light alloy wheels in Y-spoke style, while M Sport models come with 18-inch bi-colour M double-spoke light alloy wheels. 19-inch light alloy wheels are optionally available on Sport and xLine models. For M Sport models, for the first time on the X1, there is an M Sport Plus pack available as an option which includes unique 19-inch light alloy wheels, M Sport brakes, Sun Protection Glass, M Sport Steering, M Sport Seat Belts and Harman Kardon upgraded speaker system.

New look for the M Sport model
The M Sport version, comes equipped with upgraded M Sport suspension and the M Aerodynamics package. It also features Heated Front Seats, Folding Exterior Mirrors, Extended Lighting as well as Dakota Leather upholstery as standard. The front apron, side skirts, wheel arch trim, diffuser and cladding on the BMW X1 M Sport come in body colour.

Particularly eye-catching are features such as air intakes for the newly designed bumper (with Air Curtain Technology) that are even larger than on the other model variants.

Engine line-up
The new X1 is powered by a range of  three and four-cylinder Twin-Power Turbo engines offering the perfect combination of driving performance and fuel economy, using either a front-wheel drive configuration or BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.

There are two petrol and two diesel engines in the range. The petrol range starts with the 140hp 1.5-litre sDrive18i that has a peak torque of 220Nm. It will accelerate from zero to 62mph in 9.7s and then go on to a top speed of 127mph with optional automatic gearbox. It comes with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual clutch auto, while CO2 emissions are 125g/km* and combined fuel consumption 37.7-56.5mpg**.

The more powerful 2.0-litre X1 sDrive20i delivers a total power output of 192hp with a maximum torque of 280Nm. The sDrive20i can be specified with a seven-speed Sport dual-clutch automatic, which will enable the car to complete the benchmark zero to 62mph sprint in 7.7s. Top speed is 140mph, while CO2 emissions are 129g/km with a combined fuel consumption of 47.9-52.3 mpg. The X1 xDrive20i improves zero to 62mph time to 7.4s with a top speed of 138mph while CO2 emissions are 143g/km with a combined fuel consumption of 38.7-51.4mpg.

The diesel range utilises a 2.0-litre power-plant and both the sDrive and the all-wheel drive xDrive18d models deliver 150hp and a peak torque of 350Nm. The benchmark zero to 62mph sprint is achieved in 9.3-9.4s while emitting 113-1145g/km of CO2. The X1 sDrive18d is offered with a six-speed manual or an optional eight-speed Sport automatic transmission. Combined fuel consumption is 36.7-53.3 mpg for the sDrive and 36.7-55.4mpg for the xDrive.

The 190hp all-wheel-drive xDrive 20d is at the top of the X1 range delivering a maximum torque of 400Nm while emitting just 123g/km of CO2 with a combined fuel consumption of 39.8-55.4mpg. Like the 18dxDrive it uses the eight-speed Sport automatic transmission that enables it to accelerate from zero to 62mph in 7.8s and go on to a top speed of 136mph.

Optimum balance of dynamics and comfort
The new X1 continues to offer excellent handling across the range. Together with the car’s low centre of gravity, wide track, short overhangs and high level of body and chassis rigidity, the suspension of the X1 provides optimum agility and driving pleasure. The xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system, notably, is linked with BMW’s DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) to keep oversteer or understeer in check, while the M Sport models add M Sport suspension for sportier driving.

The latest PHEV technology
The debut of the new model next year will see the BMW Group stepping up the electrification of its vehicle line-up once again and, by the end of 2019, it will offer 12 electrified models in its product range.

The new BMW X1 xDrive25e will be one of those models. Due to enter production in March 2020, it will be fitted with the latest, fourth-generation BMW PHEV technology used in the BMW i8. The high-voltage batteries used in these models are developed and produced independently by the BMW Group, using lithium-ion cells based on specifications defined by the company.

The battery in the xDrive25e has a gross energy content of 9.7 kWh, and its benefits include a longer operating range. The BMW X1 xDrive25e will be able to cover more than 31 miles on electric power alone. The BMW TwinPower Turbo engine, which generates 125hp and peak torque of 220Nm, will power the front wheels, while the electric drive system with rated output of 95hp and torque of 165Nm will channel its power to the rear wheels. The interplay of the two power sources produces an intelligent, part-electric version of BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive technology.

Drivers can select from three drive modes to suit the situation at hand. The default AUTO eDRIVE strikes a balance of electric/non-electric operation, while MAX eDRIVE maximises electric driving and SAVE BATTERY conserves the high-voltage battery’s charge for later in the journey. The plug-in hybrid system can be charged easily from a conventional plug socket or more rapidly using a BMW Wallbox. The electric charging flap for the BMW X1 xDrive25e is sited on the side panel.

Focusing on functionality and comfort
The BMW X1 offers comfort as well as a feeling of spaciousness. The driver and front passenger enjoy freedom of movement, but so too do those in the rear seats. These can be folded down in three sections (40:20:40) as standard, enabling considerable scope for variability – e.g. when it comes to stowing and transporting sports equipment. The rear seats can be adjusted fore and aft, the two sections of the 60:40 split seat surface sliding forward independently by up to 13cm, with the Sliding Rear Seat Bench option. The backrest angle of the rear seats can also be varied through six stages.

The BMW X1 comes with the  automatic tailgate operation as standard, which allows it to be opened and closed electrically. Hands-free tailgate opening and closing is also available, courtesy of the Comfort Access option. This allows shopping bags, for example, to be loaded directly into the 505 – 1,550-litre boot without having to open the tailgate using a key or release handle.

Interior
The updated interior details include  contrast stitching on the instrument panel, which is black on its upper section and adopts the car’s individual upholstery colour lower down. This contrast stitching is available for xLine, Sport and M Sport variants of the X1, which also feature coloured edging for the floor mats, plus contrast stitching for the edging.

The BMW X1 is offered with three new upholstery variants. New for cars with the SE and optional sports seats. New for Sport models is the Cloth/Sensatec combination in Anthracite with Grey accenting or as an option with Orange accenting. The BMW X1 M Sport now comes as standard with Dakota Leather in Black with M piping. M safety belts in customary M design are available as an option in the M Sport Plus pack and add a particularly classy detail to the mix. The front and rear seats also stand out with their M-specific and decidedly sporty seam pattern.

The standard  lighting package on xLine and M Sport (optional SE and Sport) includes freely selectable colour tones (Orange, Violet, Green, Bronze, Blue and White). The LED illumination rings the interior through to the rear.

New Control Display with voice control and touchscreen operation
The BMW X1 features an updated Navigation system with either an 8.8-inch or the optional 10.25-inch Touch Control Display. This tiling display gives the driver a quick overview of the most important information of the moment.

This latest model incorporates the sixth generation of BMW’s iDrive that introduces touchscreen control for the Control Display alongside the iDrive Controller and optional intelligent voice control. Modern black-panel technology is included as standard in every BMW X1 for the instrument cluster and it comes with a 5.7-inch TFT Info Display.

A further highlight is the optionally available full-colour Head-up Display, which projects all important driving information and navigation/assistance system readouts onto the windscreen and therefore into the driver’s field of view – in high resolution. The BMW X1 is the only vehicle in its segment to offer a system of this kind.

Intelligent connectivity with BMW ConnectedDrive
The BMW Connected App and BMW ConnectedDrive Services offer convenience-enhancing functions to assist the person at the wheel with the task of driving and much more besides.

BMW Connected App creates a digital bridge between the user’s smartphone and their car. It represents the next stage of in-car personalisation and enables the transfer of smartphone content onto the Control Display in the BMW X1, resulting in easier display and operation when inside the car. Coupled with the standard Remote Services, drivers can remotely lock/unlock their vehicle, check the status and locate the last known location through the convenience of their smartphone.

In addition, the BMW Connected app makes it possible to send destinations directly from a smartphone to the X1’s navigation system. Once route guidance has been activated, the standard Real Time Traffic Information shows the traffic situation in real time and helps the driver to react to possible obstructions.

The new BMW X1 goes on sale from 29 May 2019 with Customer deliveries from mid-July 2019,  prices starting from £28,795 OTR.

BMW, one of the world’s most successful premium carmakers, also boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment it first entered 30 years ago. Around one in three BMW cars sold around the world is now equipped with the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system. BMW’s success in this segment has been driven not only by the ever-popular BMW X models but also by all-wheel-drive models based on the other model series, from the BMW 1 Series to the BMW 7 Series. Across these model series, a large choice of AWD models is offered in a wide range of engine versions. At the same time, BMW continues to refine this technology and take it in new directions. By offering BMW xDrive in combination with a hybrid drive and with a front-wheel-drive platform, the company has repeatedly demonstrated its proficiency in the all-wheel-drive field, proficiency that will secure BMW’s position at the forefront of this sector well into the future. Today, BMW offers more than 110 models – of either transmission type – with BMW xDrive in 12 different model series, as well as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car and the compact BMW 225xe with electrified all-wheel drive.

The focus from day one: traction and dynamics.
BMW’s first foray into the all-wheel-drive market came with the unveiling of the BMW 325i “Allrad” at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in 1985. From the outside, the newcomer didn’t immediately reveal its inner qualities, so its performance when the journalists took it out on the test track was even more of an eye-opener. This very first BMW all-wheel-drive system not only improved traction away from surfaced roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also made for more dynamic handling through corners. “The new BMW is the new champion when it comes to handling,” was the verdict of the testers from German car magazine Auto Zeitung not long after the first unveiling.

Today, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system takes typical BMW driving dynamics to new levels. The current generation of this system is controlled by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM) system, which ensures that xDrive always responds appropriately at the earliest possible moment, based on reliable sensing and monitoring of the current driving situation. The interventions may be performed either entirely by BMW xDrive, or by xDrive in combination with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Performance Control (DPC). The resulting fast and precise control of drive power distribution ensures typical BMW handling characteristics even under extremely dynamic cornering.

The all-wheel-drive system is biased towards the typical BMW rear-wheel-drive characteristics. That is to say, on the all-wheel-drive models a greater share of the drive power is sent to the rear wheels, even under normal driving conditions. This maintains the typical BMW precise steering response, with virtually no torque steer. For crisp turn-in and high tracking stability, the latest-generation BMW xDrive system starts increasing the amount of power sent to the rear wheels as soon as the vehicle enters a corner, further enhancing the driving pleasure for which BMW is a byword.

BMW all-wheel-drive technology: continuous evolution since 1985.
The full-time all-wheel-drive system featured on the BMW 325i “Allrad” of 1985 split the drive power in a ratio of 37 to 63 per cent between the front and rear wheels. In response to wheel speed differences, visco locks in the transfer case and rear differential were capable of providing a virtually rigid connection between the front and rear wheels, in order to improve traction and stability. This model’s name was soon changed to BMW 325iX, and from 1988 it was offered in a “touring” version as well (lower-case spelling up to and including the E46 series).

1991: BMW 525iX.
Three years on, BMW introduced an all-wheel-drive model in the BMW 5 Series too. For the first time, the power split was now electronically controlled. The newly developed system featured multi-plate clutches that allowed the default 36:64 front-to-rear power split to be varied seamlessly and automatically in line with driving conditions. Initially a hydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch was used at the rear axle, but this was later replaced by electronically controlled selective braking intervention. The system monitored the driving situation using wheel speed signals from the Anti-lock Braking System, supplemented by further information about brake status, engine speed and throttle valve position.

From the outset the all-wheel-drive system of the BMW 525iX was a class apart. The electronic control system delivered a very fast and precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered in both Sedan and touring versions.

1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.
In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of 38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X (Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle challenging conditions off the beaten track.

In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept, there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series.

2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.
Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only premium model in its class for years to come.

The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.

In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.

2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid drive.
With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile, in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the all-wheel-drive market.

2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.

BMW xDrive also available for other model series.
The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision, BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7 Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6 Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5 Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe models of the new BMW 4 Series.

Driving progress ever forward.
BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new front-wheel-drive format.

With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system. This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the front wheels.

Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.
BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.
In September 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This high-end BMW luxury model pioneers groundbreaking innovations on all fronts, and will be available with BMW xDrive from its market launch in October. The new luxury sedan will also be the first model to allow intelligent all-wheel-drive to be combined with Integral Active Steering – that is to say with passively steering rear wheels.

BMW’s compact Sports Activity Vehicle, the X1, has been a huge success since its launch in 2009. More than 730,000 were sold globally of that first generation with nearly 40,000 new owners of X1 in the UK over the same period. Now an all-new BMW X1 has been unveiled and features dynamic BMW X styling, a sporting character blended with outstanding efficiency, and an array of innovative equipment features in comfort, safety and infotainment.

Featuring an all-new range of engines and gearboxes, not to mention the latest, ultra-efficient version of the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the second generation of the BMW X1 exemplifies BMW’s EfficientDynamics philosophy. At market launch, one petrol engine and three diesel options are offered.

  Design: Commanding presence, robust proportions and dynamic lines

Robust proportions, sculpted surfaces and genre-specific design features clearly mark the X1 out as a member of the BMW X model family. The front is defined by the large, upright BMW kidney grille, three-section lower air intake and characteristic “four-eyed” look formed by the twin circular head lights and fog lamps. Standard specification for the new BMW X1 includes LED daytime driving lights and for xLine and M Sport models full-LED headlights for low and high beam. This is optional for SE and Sport models.

The new car has grown most notably in height compared to its predecessor (+53mm), which helps to create extra space in the interior. When viewed from the side, the window surfaces taper towards the rear creating a particularly dynamic impression. At the rear, the central section of the rear apron rises up significantly, mimicking the frontal styling. Customers can choose from two non-metallic and 11 metallic exterior paint finishes for their new BMW X1, while the Estoril Blue metallic shade is also offered exclusively for the M Sport model.

The versatility typical of this new BMW X model is expressed not only in the driving characteristics of the X1 on various types of terrain and the sporting exterior looks, but also in the way its interior can be used, with more space for passengers and luggage.

On the inside, the new X1 strikes a fine balance between driver focus and practical elegance. The flat surfaces of the instrument panel and centre console controls are angled towards the driver, while the controls located in the lower section are surrounded by high-quality surfaces and are separated from the front passenger side by a newly designed bar. The instrument cluster, consisting of two circular instruments and framed by a small binnacle, also helps the driver to focus on the driving experience. Meanwhile, the iDrive operating system’s Control Display comes in the form of a 6.5-inch or, optionally, 8.8-inch freestanding monitor. Navigation is standard on the new X1, as it is on all BMWs from September onwards.  The rear seat bench comes as standard with a three-section split/folding backrest and is available as an option with the ability to slide forwards and backwards by 13cm.

Standard specification in the UK for the new BMW X1 includes cloth seat surfaces in the colour combination Anthracite/Black, and interior trim strips in Oxide, Silver dark matt with accent strips in high-gloss Black. Dakota leather trim in Black or Canberra Beige can be ordered as an option, as can interior trim strips in fine- wood matt Oak Grain and Fineline Stream. Beyond that, three further model lines can be selected:

The Sport Line model features black BMW kidney grille bars, air intakes with accents in high-gloss Black and underbody protection in Black Silver with an inlay painted – like the side skirts – in body colour. The interior of the Sport Line model features black sports seats with either red or grey accents, and interior trim strips in high-gloss Black or aluminium with accent strips in matt Coral Red.

The xLine model features a BMW kidney grille with bars that are matt aluminium at the front, with matt silver accents for the air intakes, side skirts and underbody protection. The interior trim comprises Dakota leather with perforated  and contrast stitching, available in Mocha, Oyster,  Black or Canberra beige with black accents and interior trim strips in high-gloss Black with accent strips in Pearl Gloss Chrome. This trim level also benefits from LED headlights and heated front seats.

M Sport models are fitted with a model-specific M aerodynamic package and 18-inch or optionally 19-inch M light-alloy wheels. This pack also benefits from LED headlights. The interior features heated front sports seats in anthracite-coloured cloth/Alcantara with blue accents, and Aluminium Hexagon interior trim strips with accent strips in matt Estoril Blue. An M leather steering wheel and a BMW Individual headliner in Anthracite are also specified.

Dakota leather trim with perforation in several colours is also available as an option exclusively for the Sport Line, xLine and M Sport models, and a selection of other interior trim strip variants can be specified. Added to which, all trim levels lines include 18-inch light-alloy wheels in their own specific design, exclusive door sill plates and an (LED lighting package with vicinity and door handle lights, ambient lighting with variable use of colours and LED optical fibres in the door panel trim). Powertrain and driving experience: Innovative technology for ability across any terrain
The new BMW X1 uses completely new powertrain and chassis technology: front/transverse-mounted four-cylinder engines from the BMW Group’s latest generation, and a newly developed BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system or an advanced front-wheel-drive configuration, depending on the model variant.

Agility has been enhanced by the new chassis, which ensures not only precisely controllable handling but also noticeably improved ride comfort. Together with the car’s low centre of gravity, virtually perfect 50:50 weight distribution, a wide track, short overhangs, optimised weight and the impressive rigidity of the body and chassis, this lays the foundation for a typically sporty BMW driving experience.

The new BMW X1 will be available from launch with one petrol and three diesel units, each with 2.0-litre displacement and BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.

The BMW X1 xDrive20i is powered by a 192hp version of the same, new, four-cylinder petrol engine, whose peak torque of 280Nm can also be accessed from just 1,250rpm. This power unit also combines as standard with the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The new BMW X1 xDrive20i sprints from 0 to 62mph in 7.4 seconds, with an average fuel consumption is 44.8mpg and, while CO2 emissions come in at 146g/km.

The maximum output has been increased by 7hp for sDrive 18d and by13hp for the xDrive20d on their predecessors, standing at 190hp and 150hp respectively. The peak torque outputs of 400 and 330Nm ensure outstanding flexibility. The new BMW X1 xDrive20d, which is fitted as standard with the eight-speed Steptronic transmission (manual transmission available from November 2015), accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 7.6 seconds, while the new BMW X1 sDrive18d completes the same sprint in 9.2seconds. This increased performance is combined with lower fuel consumption and emissions. The new BMW X1 xDrive20d, for example, posts figures of 57.6mpg and 128g/km (when combined with the automatic gearbox), while the new BMW X1 sDrive18d records 68.9mpg (65.7mpg) and 109g/km (114g/km).

The new BMW X1 sDrive18d is fitted as standard with a new six-speed manual gearbox. An eight-speed Steptronic transmission is also available, which is fitted as standard on all other models – auto is only standard on 25d. It features improved internal efficiency, increased smoothness and more dynamic gear changes. The BMW X1 xDrive18d models and xDrive20d will be launched November 2015 and feature a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, with the option of an eight-speed Steptronic transmission.

The xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system is also available in updated form for the second generation of the BMW X1. The compact, low-weight and efficient all-wheel-drive system distributes the engine’s power between the front and rear axle exactly as the situation requires – at all times. Linking up with DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) allows the system to act pre-emptively to counteract any imminent oversteer or understeer by diverting power to the wheel or wheels where it can be transferred to the road to maximum effect. The system consists of a single-speed bevel gear in the front-axle drive unit (a power take-off), and a rear-axle drive unit with an electro-hydraulically controlled hang-on multi-plate clutch. The DSC system keeps the control unit constantly supplied with important data for analysing the driving situation including the car’s speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, steering lock, wheel speed, pitch, accelerator position and the Driving Experience Control and DSC settings.

The chassis technology of the original X1 has been totally redeveloped for the new model and now comprises single-joint strut suspension at the front and a multi-link rear axle. Aluminium swivel bearings, as well as axle carriers and control arms made from high-strength steel, reduce weight and increase the rigidity of the front axle. The rear axle also employs a high proportion of high-strength steels. Tube-shaped anti-roll bars at the front and rear axle, innovative axle mounting and specially tuned elastokinematics contribute to agility and ride comfort, as do the connection of the dampers to the body via sophisticated three-way support mounts.

The new BMW X1 is equipped as standard with Servotronic speed-sensitive steering assistance, while a new item on the options list is Variable Sports Steering. This system allows parking and turning-off manoeuvres to be completed safely and comfortably with little steering effort, with very precise steering at higher speeds. M Sport suspension is also available as an option (standard on M Sport models), featuring firmer spring and damper settings and a 10mm lower ride height. Moreover, the BMW X1 will be offered for the first time with the option of BMW’s Dynamic Damper Control system. The electronically controlled dampers improve the primary and secondary ride of the new BMW X models while sharpening further their dynamic performance: two damper control settings can be activated using the Driving Experience Control switch.

The Driving Experience Control switch on the centre console is available as standard equipment allowing the driver to select either COMFORT, SPORT or ECO PRO modes at the touch of a button, adapting the responses of the accelerator pedal, gearbox, damper settings and steering.

The DSC stability system includes features such as the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Brake Assist system, Fading Compensation, a Dry Braking function and a Start-Off Assistant. Other technology available to customers includes the trailer stabilisation function, Active Differential Brake (ADB) function and Performance Control. When DSC is deactivated, an electronic locking function for the front axle differential – known as Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC) – comes into play. In tight corners it brakes a spinning wheel as required and ensures power is diverted to the other wheel.

BMW EfficientDynamics in the new BMW X1: Complete package ensures exceptional efficiency.

The enhanced functional effectiveness of all powertrain components, intelligent energy management, the rigorous application of BMW lightweight technology and far-reaching measures designed to optimise aerodynamics all play a role in ensuring the BMW X1 generation change has brought with it significant advances in efficiency. The innovations developed under the BMW EfficientDynamics banner form an overall package that delivers greater driving pleasure combined with up to 17 per cent lower fuel consumption and emissions, depending on the model, plus lower weight yet extra rigidity for the body and chassis.

Systematic improvements have also been made to the aerodynamics of the new BMW X1. Air flaps in the BMW kidney grille and the front apron’s lower intake can be actively shut off when the cooling requirement is low, reducing drag at the front of the car. The Air Curtains integrated into the outer air intakes channel the onrushing air precisely behind the front side panels, causing it to hang over the wheels like a curtain and thus reduce turbulence.

The new BMW X1 also has smooth under-body panelling, air deflectors on the front wheel arches and vertical aeroblades, which form a unit with the roof spoiler to channel the airflow around the rear of the car to best effect. With the drag coefficient (Cd) of the X1 now as low as 0.29, depending on the model variant, the new model cuts efficiently through the air.

All the engines in the BMW Group’s new generation of power units work with the latest incarnation of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. This contains elements such as turbochargers integrated into the exhaust manifold, plus the most recently updated generation of VALVETRONIC for the petrol engines and a common-rail direct injection system working at even higher pressure for the diesel units. The impressive functional effectiveness of the new power units is also assisted by an aluminium crankcase and cylinder heads, forged steel crankshafts with an integrated balancer shaft drive, low-weight pistons, forged connecting rods, friction-reduced cylinder coatings and map-controlled oil pumps.

With their reduced weight and enhanced internal efficiency, the new six-speed manual and eight-speed Steptronic transmission also help to optimise efficiency. The manual gearbox has a centrifugal pendulum absorber in the dual-mass flywheel, smoothing out rotational oscillations occurring at low engine speeds. This increases comfort when the driver is keeping revs low to enhance economy. Meanwhile, the reduced converter slip of the new automatic transmission cuts energy losses, and its wider gear spread keeps revs lower at higher vehicle speeds.

The latest version of the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system is considerably lighter than before. Furthermore, the powertrain’s torque losses in normal driving situations are reduced by around 30 per cent thanks to the new hang-on multi-plate clutch.

The BMW EfficientDynamics technology employed in the new BMW X1 includes intelligent energy management. Brake Energy Regeneration enables extremely efficient power generation for the on-board power supply. The Electric Power Steering and on-demand fuel and coolant pumps work with maximum efficiency, while shorter glow phases reduce the amount of energy required when starting the diesel engines.

The Optimum Shift Indicator and Auto Start Stop function are also part of the standard specification. ECO PRO mode – activated via the Driving Experience Control switch – also allows drivers of new BMW X1 models with eight-speed Steptronic transmission to make use of the coasting function. At speeds between 31–99mph the powertrain is disengaged as soon as the driver takes his or her foot off the accelerator. Further efficiency gains have been achieved with items including reduced-friction wheel bearings and tyres with lower rolling resistance.

Finally, an intelligent mix of materials for the body structure and chassis components of the new BMW X1 allows increased agility, lower vibrations and enhanced safety to be combined with optimised vehicle weight.

Body and equipment: More space and comfort.

The new BMW X1 offers more space for passengers and luggage and new options for varying its load-carrying capacity. The raised seating position (by 36mm in the front and 64mm in the rear compared to the predecessor model), the increased headroom, shoulder room and elbow room available to all occupants, along with the horizontal surface design in the interior, create generous levels of space and an ambience typical of a Sports Activity Vehicle. Knee room at the rear has increased by 36mm in standard specification and by up to 66mm  with the optionally adjustable rear seat, while boot capacity of 505 litres represents an 85-litre improvement on the first-generation X1 and can be increased further to as much as 1,550 litres by folding down the standard 40:20:40-split rear seat.

A 60:40-split rear bench is optionally available with individual elements that can slide forward or back by up to 13cms, allowing seating comfort and storage capacity to be adjusted to any given situation. The folding process for the backrests can be initiated electrically from the boot area at the touch of a button. As an option, the front passenger seat backrest can also be folded down, further increasing variability.

The standard automatic tailgate makes using the X1’s load-carrying capacity even easier and the Comfort Access option also includes a hands- free tailgate opening and closing function. In addition, the new BMW X1 is offered from the factory with a trailer coupling including removable ball head, as well as preparation for a rear luggage carrier rack.

The passenger compartment of the new BMW X1 has large door pockets offering space for items such as one-litre bottles, plus a selection of other storage areas including armrest for the driver and front passenger with integrated storage compartments and a storage packages. The latter includes features such as compartments under the front seats, nets in the backrests of the driver’s and front passenger seat, a central armrest with cupholders for the rear, additional 12-volt sockets and a strap and net for securing smaller items of luggage in the boot area.

The new BMW X1 is fitted as standard with the iDrive operating system with high-resolution 6.5-inch colour display, business navigation, an audio system with six loudspeakers and an AUX-in socket. A USB interface hands-free facility for telephones, the Driving Experience Control switch and air conditioning are included too. The UK’s high standard specification sees automatic tailgate, front fog lamps, remote- controlled central locking and keyless engine ignition, electric window controls, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, a leather steering wheel adjustable for height and reach, a rain sensor including automatic headlight control, extended storage and front and rear isofix attachments

Among the items on the options list is a Panoramic glass roof covering a 1,200mm x 847mm area, a CD player, a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) receiver and Harman Kardon HiFi system, complete with 12 loudspeakers and a digital amplifier with 360-watt output.

From a safety aspect, the X1 provides active guard as standard which includes: Forward vehicle collision warning with audible and visual warnings to the driver. Brake preconditioning, when driving over 30mph an urgent warning activates brake preconditioning to prepare brakes ahead of driver use. And City collision mitigation, proactively engages braking (up to 30 mph) for rapid reaction to potential vehicle collisions. 

BMW ConnectedDrive in the new BMW X1: Progress through intelligent connectivity.

Once again, BMW ConnectedDrive is leading the way in offering innovative solutions to today’s drivers. The navigation option assists route guidance on the standard-fitted Control Display with direction arrows and sophisticated map graphics, including views from various angles. A further option is BMW’s Navigation Plus system, which comprises a bigger, now 8.8-inch, Control Display, an instrument cluster with extended features, a split-screen function for the Control Display as well as the BMW Head-Up Display.

The camera-based assistance systems available include the Driving Assistant with Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info with No Passing Info display, the BMW Selective Beam anti-dazzle High Beam Assistant, as well as Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function. In addition to these functions, the Driving Assistant Plus line- up also features the Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function – which maintains both a desired speed between 19–87mph as entered by the driver and the safety distance to vehicles travelling ahead – and the Traffic Jam Assistant.

Park Distance Control and the rear-view camera, plus Parking Assistant are also available.

The ConnectedDrive Services option enables the use of the BMW Online internet portal via the SIM card embedded in the vehicle, as well as the integration of smartphone apps into the car. Standard features also include the Intelligent Emergency Call and BMW Teleservices.

BMW UK expects to sell 10,500 BMW X1s in its first full year of sales. The BMW X1 goes on sale 24 October, 2015.

The chassis technology of the original X1 has been totally redeveloped for the new model and now comprises single-joint strut suspension at the front and a multi-link rear axle. Aluminium swivel bearings, as well as axle carriers and control arms made from high-strength steel, reduce weight and increase the rigidity of the front axle. The rear axle also employs a high proportion of high-strength steels. Tube-shaped anti-roll bars at the front and rear axle, innovative axle mounting and specially tuned elastokinematics contribute to agility and ride comfort, as do the connection of the dampers to the body via sophisticated three-way support mounts.

The new BMW X1 is equipped as standard with Servotronic speed-sensitive steering assistance, while a new item on the options list is Variable Sports Steering. This system allows parking and turning-off manoeuvres to be completed safely and comfortably with little steering effort, with very precise steering at higher speeds. M Sport suspension is also available as an option, featuring firmer spring and damper settings and a 10mm lower ride height. Moreover, the BMW X1 will be offered for the first time with the option of BMW’s Dynamic Damper Control system. The electronically controlled dampers improve the primary and secondary ride of the new BMW X models while sharpening further their dynamic performance: two damper control settings can be activated using the Driving Experience Control switch.

The Driving Experience Control switch on the centre console is available as standard equipment allowing the driver to select either COMFORT, SPORT or ECO PRO modes at the touch of a button, adapting the responses of the accelerator pedal, gearbox, damper settings and steering.

The DSC stability system includes features such as the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Brake Assist system, Fading Compensation, a Dry Braking function and a Start-Off Assistant. Other technology available to customers includes the trailer stabilisation function, Active Differential Brake (ADB) function and Performance Control. When DSC is deactivated, an electronic locking function for the front axle differential – known as Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC) – comes into play. In tight corners it brakes a spinning wheel as required and ensures power is diverted to the other wheel.

BMW EfficientDynamics in the new BMW X1: Complete package ensures exceptional efficiency.
The enhanced functional effectiveness of all powertrain components, intelligent energy management, the rigorous application of BMW lightweight technology and far-reaching measures designed to optimise aerodynamics all play a role in ensuring the BMW X1 generation change has brought with it significant advances in efficiency. The innovations developed under the BMW EfficientDynamics banner form an overall package that delivers greater driving pleasure combined with up to 17 per cent lower fuel consumption and emissions, depending on the model, plus lower weight yet extra rigidity for the body and chassis.

Systematic improvements have also been made to the aerodynamics of the new BMW X1. Air flaps in the BMW kidney grille and the front apron’s lower intake can be actively shut off when the cooling requirement is low, reducing drag at the front of the car. The Air Curtains integrated into the outer air intakes channel the onrushing air precisely behind the front side panels, causing it to hang over the wheels like a curtain and thus reduce turbulence,

The new BMW X1 also has smooth under-body panelling, air deflectors on the front wheel arches and vertical aeroblades, which form a unit with the roof spoiler to channel the airflow around the rear of the car to best effect. With the drag coefficient (Cd) of the X1 now as low as 0.29, depending on the model variant, the new model cuts efficiently through the air.

All the engines in the BMW Group’s new generation of power units work with the latest incarnation of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. This contains elements such as turbochargers integrated into the exhaust manifold, plus the most recently updated generation of VALVETRONIC for the petrol engines and a common-rail direct injection system working at even higher pressure for the diesel units. The impressive functional effectiveness of the new power units is also assisted by an aluminium crankcase and cylinder heads, forged steel crankshafts with an integrated balancer shaft drive, low-weight pistons, forged connecting rods, friction-reduced cylinder coatings and map-controlled oil pumps.

With their reduced weight and enhanced internal efficiency, the new six-speed manual and eight-speed Steptronic transmission also help to optimise efficiency. The manual gearbox has a centrifugal pendulum absorber in the dual-mass flywheel, smoothing out rotational oscillations occurring at low engine speeds. This increases comfort when the driver is keeping revs low to enhance economy. Meanwhile, the reduced converter slip of the new automatic transmission cuts energy losses, and its wider gear spread keeps revs lower at higher vehicle speeds.

The latest version of the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system is considerably lighter than before. Furthermore, the powertrain’s torque losses in normal driving situations are reduced by around 30 per cent thanks to the new hang-on multi-plate clutch.

The BMW EfficientDynamics technology employed in the new BMW X1 includes intelligent energy management. Brake Energy Regeneration enables extremely efficient power generation for the on-board power supply. The Electric Power Steering and on-demand fuel and coolant pumps work with maximum efficiency, while shorter glow phases reduce the amount of energy required when starting the diesel engines.

The Optimum Shift Indicator and Auto Start Stop function are also part of the standard specification. ECO PRO mode – activated via the Driving Experience Control switch – also allows drivers of new BMW X1 models with eight-speed Steptronic transmission to make use of the coasting function. At speeds between 31–99mph the powertrain is disengaged as soon as the driver takes his or her foot off the accelerator. Further efficiency gains have been achieved with items including reduced-friction wheel bearings and tyres with lower rolling resistance.

Finally, an intelligent mix of materials for the body structure and chassis components of the new BMW X1 allows increased agility, lower vibrations and enhanced safety to be combined with optimised vehicle weight.

Body and equipment: More space and comfort.
The new BMW X1 offers more space for passengers and luggage and new options for varying its load-carrying capacity. The raised seating position (by 36mm in the front and 64mm in the rear compared to the predecessor model), the increased headroom, shoulder room and elbow room available to all occupants, along with the horizontal surface design in the interior, create generous levels of space and an ambience typical of a Sports Activity Vehicle. Knee room at the rear has increased by 36mm in standard specification and by up to 66mm with the optionally adjustable rear seat, while boot capacity of 505 litres represents an 85-litre improvement on the first-generation X1 and can be increased further to as much as 1,550 litres by folding down the standard 40:20:40-split rear seat.

A 60:40-split rear bench is optionally available with individual elements that can slide forward or back by up to 13cms, allowing seating comfort and storage capacity to be adjusted to any given situation. The folding process for the backrests can be initiated electrically from the boot area at the touch of a button. As an option, the front passenger seat backrest can also be folded down, further increasing variability.

The standard automatic tailgate makes using the X1’s load-carrying capacity even easier and the Comfort Access option also includes a hands- free tailgate opening and closing function. In addition, the new BMW X1 is offered from the factory with a trailer coupling including removable ball head, as well as preparation for a rear luggage carrier rack.

The passenger compartment of the new BMW X1 has large door pockets offering space for items such as one-litre bottles, plus a selection of other storage areas including armrest for the driver and front passenger with integrated storage compartments and a storage packages. The latter includes features such as compartments under the front seats, nets in the backrests of the driver’s and front passenger seat, a central armrest with cupholders for the rear, additional 12-volt sockets and a strap and net for securing smaller items of luggage in the boot area.

The new BMW X1 is fitted as standard with the iDrive operating system with high-resolution 6.5-inch colour display, business navigation, an audio system with six loudspeakers and an AUX-in socket. A USB interface hands-free facility for telephones, the Driving Experience Control switch and air conditioning are included too. The UK’s high standard specification sees automatic tailgate, front foglamps, remote- controlled central locking and keyless engine ignition, electric window controls, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, a leather steering wheel adjustable for height and reach, a rain sensor including automatic headlight control, extended storage and front and rear isofix attachments.

Among the items on the options list is a Panorama glass roof covering a 1,200mm x 847mm area, a CD player, a Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) receiver and Harman Kardon HiFi system, complete with 12 loudspeakers and a digital amplifier with 360-watt output.

From a safety aspect, the X1 provides active guard as standard which includes: Forward vehicle collision warning with audible and visual warnings to the driver. Brake preconditioning, when driving over 30mph an urgent warning activates brake preconditioning to prepare brakes ahead of driver use. And City collision mitigation, proactively engages braking (up to 30 mph) for rapid reaction to potential vehicle collisions.

BMW ConnectedDrive in the new BMW X1: Progress through intelligent connectivity.
Once again, BMW ConnectedDrive is leading the way in offering innovative solutions to today’s drivers. The navigation option assists route guidance on the standard-fitted Control Display with direction arrows and sophisticated map graphics, including views from various angles. A further option is BMW’s Navigation Plus system, which comprises a bigger, now 8.8-inch, Control Display, an instrument cluster with extended features, a split-screen function for the Control Display as well as the BMW Head-Up Display.

The camera-based assistance systems available include the Driving Assistant with Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info with No Passing Info display, the BMW Selective Beam anti-dazzle High Beam Assistant, as well as Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function. In addition to these functions, the Driving Assistant Plus line- up also features the Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function – which maintains both a desired speed between 19–87mph as entered by the driver and the safety distance to vehicles travelling ahead – and the Traffic Jam Assistant. Park Distance Control and the rear-view camera, plus Parking Assistant are also available.

The ConnectedDrive Services option enables the use of the BMW Online internet portal via the SIM card embedded in the vehicle, as well as the integration of smartphone apps into the car. Standard features also include the Intelligent Emergency Call and BMW Teleservices.

The talented all-rounder of the premium compact segment will make its US market debut armed with state-of-the-art powertrain technology, innovative equipment features, selective design modifications and extensive interior refinements. The new BMW X1 will celebrate its US premiere at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) on 6 – 15 April 2012, with its market launch stateside following in September 2012.

The NYIAS can look back on a history unmatched by any other car show in the USA. It was held for the first time in 1900, and around one million visitors are expected to attend this year’s event in the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

The BMW X model – produced at BMW Plant Leipzig – will take the leap across the pond with a renewed spring in its step, the result of a carefully judged honing of its core qualities. The design of the BMW X1 body now provides an even more intense expression of the car’s muscular presence, contemporary allure and versatile sporting capability. Design: new touches to sharpen its contemporary looks and enhance its versatility and sporting flair.
Typical BMW proportions, expressive, vibrant surfaces and signature BMW X model design cues shape the appearance of the BMW X1. A sweeping bonnet, long wheelbase and set-back passenger compartment emphasise the car’s dynamic talent, while attractive light and shade effects hint at its inherent agility. The versatility and robustness of a BMW X model are reflected in elements such as the black edging at the lower edge of the body and wide wheel arches.

When viewed from the front, the powerful stance of the new BMW X1 on the road and its aura of quality are now accentuated with even greater intensity. A larger number of surfaces painted in body colour highlight the car’s enhanced elegance. The path of the car’s lines, which converge on the license plate mount from either side of the BMW kidney and forge outwards in the lower section of the bumper, is borrowed from BMW X models in higher vehicle segments. The newly designed headlights allow a detailed view of the advanced light technology within. And a chrome-coated accent strip now cuts across the top of the twin circular headlights. Meanwhile, an LED accent light – included as part of the optional xenon light package, complete with LED light rings for the daytime driving lights – provides the classic BMW focused look.

The swage line rising steadily to the rear of the car, another character line extending the contours of the side window surrounds as it heads towards the rear, and powerfully bulging wheel arches allow the BMW X1 to cut a very distinctive figure side-on. The pronounced side skirts are a signature feature of BMW X models, while the side direction indicators are now integrated into the newly designed exterior mirrors.

The premium feel of the new BMW X1 is also underlined at the rear by the new subdivision of apron, bumper and underguard, with the repositioned reflectors now also bordered by surfaces painted in body colour. As a result, the black plastic elements are slimmer, while the silver-coloured underguard has a more striking surface structure.

The modifications to the design of the new BMW X1 interior create an even more vivid showcase of the sporty driving pleasure, cutting-edge versatility and premium feel this car provides. The side of the centre console angled towards the driver is now shallower, spotlighting the driver-focused nature of the cockpit design.

High-quality electroplated surrounds for the gearshift lever and centre console cupholder, a chrome strip for the headlight switch and chrome touches for the side edging of the Control Display – when the optional navigation system is specified – add the finishing touches to the interior’s cloak of exclusivity. The BMW X1: more sporting and efficient than ever.
The variants of the BMW X1 offered in the US market are powered by BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engines. This package of technology consists of twin-scroll turbocharging, High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-Vanos variable camshaft control. In both the award-winning six-cylinder in-line engine under the bonnet of the BMW X1 xDrive35i – developing 225 kW/306 hp – and the 180 kW/245 hp four-cylinder unit powering the BMW X1 sDrive28i and BMW X1 xDrive28i it ensures instantaneous power delivery, impressive pulling power and exceptional efficiency.

Both engines link up as standard with an automatic gearbox and extensive BMW EfficientDynamics technology. Features including the Auto Start-Stop function (28i only), Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering, the need-based operation of ancillary units and tyres with low rolling resistance all help to achieve a blend of performance and fuel economy unmatched by any rival.

The BMW X1 sDrive28i with customary BMW rear-wheel drive and the all-wheel-drive xDrive35i will be offered exclusively in the US market. The intelligent all-wheel drive of the BMW X1 xDrive35i and BMW X1 xDrive28i varies the distribution of drive between the front and rear wheels, as required. This electronically controlled power distribution ensures optimum traction and unbeatable directional stability in all weather and road conditions, as well as noticeably sportier responses through dynamically taken corners.

Successor to 5 Series long wheelbase will launch in autumn

Company expands production capacity in China

Munich/Beijing. The BMW Group will also produce its X1 Sports Activity Vehicle in China in the future. “The BMW X1 could be one of the first products for our new plant in Tiexi in the Shenyang region. We are currently exploring this possibility together with the authorities here in China,” said Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG Norbert Reithofer in Beijing on Wednesday. The facility currently builds BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series models for the Chinese market.

Following the launch of the new 5 Series, a successor to the 5 Series Long Wheelbase version will also be produced and sold only in China. Production of the new vehicle will begin in autumn of this year. The Long Wheelbase version of the 5 Series has proved extremely successfully in China, with more than 70,000 vehicles sold since 2006.

In light of the promising opportunities for growth, the BMW Group will continue to expand its presence and its purchasing activities in China over the coming years. “We are confident that this market will continue to see strong growth over the next few years. Our goal is to participate in that growth over the long term,” Reithofer explained. “With our new plant in Tiexi, we will be increasing our production capacity in China to 100,000 vehicles a year from 2012 on. Over the long term, we anticipate the two plants having combined potential for as many as 300,000 vehicles a year – depending on market trends. We may realistically need this potential over the long term”.

The BMW Group announced that it would build a second production plant in China in November 2009. The investment volume for the new plant amounts to a total of 560 million euros; the BMW Group and its partner, Brilliance, will each defray half of this amount. Construction work is scheduled to begin in early June 2010, with the start of production slated for 2012. The expanded capacity in Shenyang will create a total of around 1,000 new jobs. 600 new employees have already been hired and are currently being prepared for their roles.

China is currently the BMW Group’s fourth largest market worldwide. Last year the BMW Group sold more than 90,000 vehicles in mainland China. In the first quarter of 2010, the company increased deliveries by 106% to reach a total of 34,179 vehicles. “China is, and will remain, one of the most attractive automobile markets in the world,” added Reithofer. In 2002 – before the plant in Shenyang was built and opened in 2003 – the BMW Group’s retail volume in mainland China was just under 6,700 vehicles.

According to the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), a total of around 478,000 premium automobiles were sold in China last year. The Association estimates that the market for premium vehicles in China will grow to more than 1.5 million units a year by 2020.

Resource-efficient production plays an important part in the BMW Group’s sustainability strategy and at the Shenyang location also. Through rigorous optimisation of its production processes, the existing plant in Da Dong reduced energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions alone by 12 percent and water consumption by as much as 40 percent between 2008 and 2009.

Munich . As the first premium vehicle in its segment, the BMW X1 makes a striking impression with its unique driving pleasure, versatility and efficiency. Now the compact BMW X model moves into the lead in the area of safety, too. On the current Euro NCAP crash test the BMW X1achieved the highest score of 5 stars. Subjected to a testing procedure which was supplemented with additional criteria at the beginning of this year, the new model put on an impressive showing with its comprehensive standard safety features and an effective system of vehicle occupant protection which covers different types of collision. Of the 12 vehicles which have just gone through the NCAP test, the BMW X1 also has by far the highest level of pedestrian protection.

With the maximum score on the most important crash test procedure in Europe, the BMW X1 confirms the high standard of the safety concept developed for the BMW X models. Its extremely stable body structure provides an ideal basis for ensuring that the passenger cell is subject to maximum protection even in the event of a forceful impact. The forces acting on the vehicle are diverted along the clearly defined load paths of the support structures and absorbed by means of amply sized deformation zones.

In the interior of the BMW X1, front, side and curtain head airbags protect both the driver and other travellers from injury. Likewise part of the range of standard equipment are the belt tensioners and belt force limiters for the front seats as well as the ISOFIX systems for attaching children's seats at the rear. The restraint systems are controlled by a central electronic safety system which triggers the most effective protection elements taking into account the type and intensity of the accident.

In order to optimise active safety, the BMW X1 is fitted with the driving stability system DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) which is networked with the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive. The precise regulation and extremely wide range of functions offered by the system, including brake assistant, cornering brake assistant and traction mode DTC (Dynamic Traction Control), ensure easily controllable and safe handling even in demanding situations on the road. This makes a significant contribution towards reducing accident risk. The standard equipment of the BMW X1 also includes a tyre damage display function which warns the driver early on when there is pressure loss in an individual tyre.

The test procedure of the NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) is regarded as one of the most demanding tests required for new vehicles worldwide. The Euro NCAP test is a recognised benchmark of crash safety by governments, automobile clubs and consumer protection organisations throughout Europe. The test scenario covers such accident types as the head-on collision, the side crash and the side impact against a steel post. At the beginning of this year more stringent testing conditions were introduced which also address a vehicle’s electronic safety features as well as looking at additional injury risks in a wide range of different collision types.

After analysing the test results, the Euro NCAP testers confirmed that the BMW X1 has an extremely stable passenger cell which provides extensive protection from injury for both the driver and fellow travellers, regardless of their height and seating position. The BMW X1 received a particularly high score in relation to occupant protection for children. The vehicle was confirmed as offering an excellent standard of safety in the use of seating systems for children aged one and a half and three. The vehicle achieved the highest possible score for the protection provided by a seat facing opposite the direction of travel in both a head-on and a side collision.

The NCAP crash test now also attaches high importance to pedestrian protection. The BMW X1 impressed the inspectors in this discipline with by far the most effective precautions of all the vehicles being tested in the current cycle. Here again, the BMW X1 achieved its lead by means of a consistently applied safety concept. In the design of the bumpers and engine compartment lid, yielding structures ensure that the risk of injury to pedestrians and cyclists is minimised in the event of a collision. The test report makes particular mention of the material quality of the engine compartment lid which significantly reduces the risk of head injury, especially to children.

The dominance of diesel engines in other BMW SAVs, led BMW UK to decide only to offer diesel in the UK. The BMW sDrive18d and the xDrive18d feature four-cylinder powerplants with an all-aluminium crankcase and a single turbocharger with variable intake geometry. Third generation common-rail diesel technology ensures optimum combustion.

The 1,995cc engine produces 143hp while peak torque is 320Nm from 1,750rpm through to 2,500rpm. This equates to a zero to 62mph time of 9.6 seconds and a top speed of 124mph for the rear-wheel-drive X1 sDrive18d SE. The X1 xDrive18d SE posts figures of 10.1 seconds and a 121mph top speed. Both models are exceptionally fuel efficient, capable of 54.3mpg and 49.6mpg on the combined cycle respectively. The engine is EU5 rated and records 136g/km and 150g/km CO2 emissions.

Offering a higher outright performance, the BMW sDrive20d SE and xDrive20d SE are also offered. Powered by the same 1,995cc engine but in a higher state of tune, these two models up the ante offering 177hp and 350Nm from 1,750rpm to 3,000rpm. This results in improved performance figures with zero to 62mph attained in 8.1 seconds (8.4 for the xDrive20d) and a top speed of 127mph.

As the flagship model the BMW xDrive23d SE is offered only as a four-wheel-drive variant. Still using a 2.0-litre engine, albeit with twin-turbocharger technology, this International Engine of the Year category winner provides rapid performance that defies the model’s Sports Activity Vehicle position. The 204hp engine accelerates the X1 to 62mph in just 7.3 seconds. The near flat torque curve with a peak output of 400Nm from 2,000rpm to 2,250rpm permits effortless overtaking. The xDrive23d SE is an EU5 rated vehicle that records 44.8mpg on the combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 167g/km.

Most BMW X1s come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. However, buyers of the xDrive23d have a six-speed Sport automatic gearbox with gear change paddles located a finger tip away from the steering wheel for sporty changes.

Auto Start-Stop for greater fuel efficiency
EfficientDynamics plays a part in the BMW X1 story with the introduction of Auto Start-Stop technology on an X product for the first time. Available on all manual transmission cars the system improves fuel consumption figures. The BMW X1 also has the full suite of EfficientDynmamics technologies including Brake Energy Regeneration, optimised aerodynamics, optimum shift indicator and on-demand use of ancillary units to name a few.

The design of the new BMW X1 is stylish and sporting yet practical. Sleek lines blend into flared wheel arches to underscore the car’s dynamic capabilities as does the tapered roof line and wide track. Short overhangs front and rear, typical of every BMW, ensure the best basis for optimum handling. The profile of the car belies an interior space that sees five adults seated comfortably along with their luggage.

Inside, and all the main controls and dashboard displays are angled towards the driver. A range of storage compartments, trays and large door pockets provides a variety of places to keep personal effects. An owner that specifies one of the two available satellite navigation systems featuring the latest iDrive display, controller and Favourite Buttons gains a slightly revised interior layout to accommodate the system. The interior of the BMW X1 can be further enhanced by opting for the new Design package. This sees Sport seats in Oyster Nevada leather, Anthracite headlining and Fineline Wave wood trim. The Oyster theme continuing to the lower part of the dashboard, all of the centre console and leather piping on the floor mats.

The BMW X1 goes on sale in the UK on 24 October, 2009 with the sDrive18d and xDrive18d variants following in December.
