BMW UK welcomes the new year with outstanding success at the 2026 What Car? Car of the Year Awards as the all-new BMW iX3 is named overall Car of the Year after topping the Premium Electric SUV category. Alongside these awards, BMW collected four additional accolades across a variety of categories. The BMW M3 Touring was celebrated as three-time Performance Car of the Year, while the BMW 4 Series was announced as What Car?’s Coupé of choice for the sixth consecutive year. BMW continues to lead the Luxury Car category as the BMW X7 succeeds the BMW i7 in securing the 2026 accolade. Rounding off a triumphant night, the BMW X3 attained this year’s Safety Award.

BMW iX3 crowned overall Car of the Year.
Marking a true milestone moment for the brand, the BMW iX3 arrives as the first series-produced Neue Klasse model, introducing a broad spectrum of innovations and technologies that will soon be adopted across the entire BMW product portfolio. Since its unveiling last year, the trailblazing BMW iX3 has garnered widespread acclaim, and this momentum continues after securing the coveted overall Car of the Year title at this year’s What Car? awards.

The BMW iX3 thoroughly impressed judges, topping the Premium Electric SUV category before collecting the headline award. Handing over the trophy, Steve Huntingford, Editor of What Car?, said: "The premium electric SUV market is one of the most hotly contested, yet in so many respects the BMW iX3 offers a step change in capability. It combines a huge range with ultra-rapid charging; its new 'brain' improves everything from the infotainment system to safety; and despite being one of the most enjoyable SUVs of any kind to drive, it's also very comfortable. The new BMW iX3 will launch in the UK on 7 March, 2026 and can be preordered at retailers nationwide. Following its launch, BMW will introduce 40 new models and model updates between now and 2027, commencing with the BMW i3 Saloon – which begins production in the second half of 2026.

BMW M3 Touring celebrated as three-time Performance Car of the Year.
Since its launch in 2022, the BMW M3 Touring has remained a consistent favourite, impressing judges year after year with its unique combination of exhilarating performance and practical versatility. Its success continued at this year’s awards, after collecting the Performance Car of the Year accolade for the third consecutive year. "The BMW M3 Touring isn't a jack of all trades; it's a master of most that manages to combine everyday usability with a huge amount of fun,” said Huntingford. “The handling can feel as secure or playful as you wish. No matter where you are in the rev range, acceleration is savage when you put your foot down. And yet the M3 Touring is just as capable of playing the classy and practical family car,” he continued.

Coupé of the Year awarded to the BMW 4 Series for the sixth consecutive year.
The remarkable winning streak of the BMW 4 Series remains unbroken as it tops What Car?’s Coupé of the Year category for the sixth time since its 2020 launch. The judging panel commended its “precise steering,” “balanced feel through corners” and engine, which “loves to be revved…” “One of the best things about the BMW 4 Series is that even the entry-level 420i version is great to drive,” Huntingford added.

Luxury Car of the Year title retained as the BMW X7 takes this year’s top spot.
2026 begins as another successful year for BMW’s luxury division after the BMW X7 succeeded the BMW i7 in securing this year’s Luxury Car of the Year title – marking a third consecutive victory for the brand. Judges highlighted the seven-seater’s combination of “luxury and power” to deliver “effortless performance”. Additional tribute was paid to its serene driving experience – standing as one of the “quietest vehicles ever tested” by the publication – alongside abundant interior space and an “impressive ride,” which “gets even better” with the optional Executive Drive Suspension.

BMW X3 secures this year’s Safety Award.
The final award of the evening was presented to the BMW X3, which was unveiled as What Car?’s pick when it comes to safety. Commenting on the win, judges said: "As well as keeping its occupants safe in a crash, the BMW X3 is packed with active safety technology that can prevent accidents from happening in the first place. However, what really sets it apart is the way in which these systems work collaboratively with the driver, avoiding the unnecessary interventions that can lead to them being switched off."

The current generation BMW X3 will continue to be sold in the UK alongside the new BMW iX3, offering customers a choice of all-electric, petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains for maximum flexibility.

The success story at the Nürburgring continues. With a time of 7:29.490 minutes, the BMW M3 CS Touring (fuel consumption combined: 10.5 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 238 g/km according to WLTP, CO2 class: G)* is the fastest Touring of all time on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. Following the impressive record set by the BMW M2 CS (fuel consumption combined: 10.0 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 226 g/km according to WLTP, CO2 class G)* which now holds the top spot in the compact category, the BMW M3 CS Touring is now another representative of the fastest production vehicles from BMW M GmbH in the mid-size category.

The ultimate "One Car Solution."
The time of 7:29.490 minutes marks a new benchmark for the Touring in the mid-size category and is also the fastest ever recorded lap time for a Touring body style on the 20.823-kilometer-long track in the "Green Hell". In April of this year, Jörg Weidinger, BMW M development engineer and seasoned record driver, first broke the 7:30-minute barrier with a Touring Car. The previous fastest time for a Touring, set by the BMW M3 Touring in 2022, was 7:35.060 minutes. 

The mid-size category is currently dominated by the latest models from the BMW M3 and M4 family. The BMW M4 CSL holds the fastest time at 7:18.137 minutes, followed by the BMW M4 CS at 7:21.989 minutes and the BMW M3 CS at 7:28.760 minutes. The new time of the BMW M3 CS Touring, just over a second behind, showcases the vehicle's extraordinary performance, reinforcing its reputation as the perfect "One Car Solution."

BMW M is at home on the Nürburgring.
The origin and heart of BMW M's success story at the Nürburgring is the BMW M Test Centre. With its professional infrastructure and perfect location, it serves as the starting point for the successful development of new vehicle projects and testing under demanding conditions. BMW M vehicles have achieved numerous successes, including 21 overall victories at the 24-hour race. This year, ROWE Racing secured the latest victory. After a challenging start to the weekend, the team raced from 17th position. Kelvin van der Linde (RSA), Augusto Farfus (BRA), Jesse Krohn (FIN), and Raffaele Marciello (SUI) delivered an outstanding comeback to clinch victory for BMW M Motorsport.

The first-ever BMW M3 CS Touring: Maximum performance, typical M feeling, and absolute everyday usability.
The BMW M3 CS Touring combines unprecedented performance with maximum everyday usability, expanding the BMW M GmbH lineup with another special edition model in the high-performance sports car segment, now available for the first time as a Touring Car. The 405 kW/550 hp six-cylinder in-line engine propels the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds, reaching a top speed of 300 km/h. The vehicle features specially designed engine mounting and an M-specific exhaust system that delivers an emotionally charged driving sound. Power is transmitted through an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission including Drivelogic and the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, ensuring ultra-dynamic driving characteristics and supreme traction. The chassis technology is precisely tuned, with settings for the DSC stability control and M Dynamic Mode optimized for high-performance track use. The standard M Compound braking system guarantees powerful deceleration, while an optional M Carbon-ceramic brake system is available. The interior merges a performance-oriented sports car cockpit with digital technology, exclusive design features, and a versatile interior that expands storage capacity below the high-opening tailgate from 500 to 1,510 litres.

Almost two years after its initial launch, the eighth-generation BMW 5 Series recently garnered its 25th accolade across its diverse model lineup at the prestigious Top Gear Electric Awards 2025.

Standing as the epitome of driving pleasure, sporty elegance and modern functionality in a one compelling package, it was the BMW i5 Touring that took the top spot in the EV Estate category. With the first-ever BMW M3 CS Touring, BMW M GmbH adds another special-edition model to its high-performance vehicle line-up. This exclusive new derivative builds on the success of the BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive, further enhancing its unique combination of exhilarating performance and exceptional practicality.

Offering an increased engine power output, bespoke chassis tuning and minimised weight – helped by numerous components made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) – the new BMW M3 CS Touring (fuel consumption combined: 26.9 mpg; CO2 emissions combined: 240 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO2 class: G) provides the necessary ingredients for a truly compelling driving experience.

The six-cylinder in-line engine, delivering an impressive 550 hp, combined with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive all-wheel drive, enables the BMW M3 CS Touring to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 186 mph.

Priced from £120,600 RRP, this latest special-edition model will be produced in a limited run alongside all other variants of the BMW M3 Saloon and BMW M3 Touring at BMW Group Plant Munich, with first deliveries arriving in the UK from March 2025.

Six-cylinder in-line engine infused with motorsport technology.
Developed to deliver exceptional performance on track, the 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine in the BMW M3 CS Touring features an extremely rigid crankcase with a sleeve-free, closed-deck construction, a forged lightweight crankshaft and a cylinder head with a 3D-printed core. The cylinder bores – which also contribute towards weight reduction – have a wire-arc sprayed iron coating to minimise frictional losses, while the cooling system and oil supply are designed to handle the sustained heavy loads generated during harder driving on a track.

Upgraded M TwinTurbo technology ensures linear power delivery, raising the maximum charge pressure of the two mono-scroll turbochargers to 2.1 bar. Meanwhile, model-specific tweaks to the engine management system enable a maximum power output of 550 hp – a 20 hp increase over the current BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive. A peak torque of 650 Nm is available from just 2,750 rpm and up to 5,950 rpm, with the engine developing its maximum output at 6,250 rpm before reaching a 7,200 rpm red line.

A specially designed engine mounting with increased spring rates creates an extremely rigid connection between the power unit and the vehicle’s structure. This leads to a sharper engine response and an extremely direct transmission of power to the drivetrain. This instantaneous power delivery means the BMW M3 CS Touring can power from rest to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds, while 0 to 124 mph is achieved in 11.7 seconds. The mid-range sprint from 50 – 75 mph takes just 2.7 seconds in 4th gear and 3.5 seconds in 5th gear. The top speed of the special edition is 186 mph.

Standard on the BMW M3 CS Touring is an M-specific exhaust system featuring electrically controlled flaps, a titanium rear silencer with weight-minimising design and – in customary M fashion – two pairs of tailpipes painted in matt Black. The engine’s acoustic presence varies according to the engine profile selected by the driver from the M Setup menu, with SPORT or SPORT+ mode producing a particularly aggressive soundstage, especially through gear changes and the accompanying adjustments in rev speed.

Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, M xDrive and Active M Differential for dynamic power transfer.
The BMW M3 CS Touring features an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic technology. A Drivelogic button is integrated into the gear selector, making it possible to alter the transmission’s shift characteristics with a choice of three settings. Alongside comfort-focused and sporty options, drivers can also engage a setting optimised specially for track driving. Both the gear selector and carbon-fibre shift paddles on the steering wheel enable sequential interventions during the gear selection process.

Power is transferred to the road through the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which utilises an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case to ensure fully variable and super-smooth distribution of the engine’s power between the front and rear wheels. In tandem with the Active M Differential at the rear axle – where operation is also fully variable – the intelligent all-wheel-drive system’s rear-wheel bias enhances the M-typical handling dynamics. 4WD Sport mode can be selected via the M Setup menu to send an even greater proportion of the engine’s power to the rear wheels. Meanwhile, engaging 2WD mode delivers a driving experience for the ultimate purist, where all power is sent to the rear wheels and the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system is deactivated.

Bespoke chassis tuning and outstanding stopping power.
The BMW M3 CS Touring receives model-specific chassis tuning which accounts for its individual performance characteristics, profile and weight distribution. Similarly, settings for the DSC system and M Dynamic Mode are purposefully optimised for the specific demands of track driving. Also bespoke to this model are the electronically controlled adaptive M suspension dampers, M Servotronic steering and integrated braking system.

M Compound brakes provide outstanding stopping power with callipers painted in a choice of Red or Black, while customers opting for M Carbon ceramic brakes can choose between Red or matt Gold. Forged M light-alloy wheels are standard fit and are available in an exclusive double-spoke design with a matt Gold Bronze or matt Black finish. Measuring 19 inches in diameter at the front axle and 20 inches at the rear, the alloys are wrapped track tyres (275/35 ZR19 at the front, 285/30 ZR20 at the rear) as standard. Alternatively, customers can switch to sport tyres at no cost or specify ultra-track tyres from the options list.

Exclusive carbon-fibre components and optimised body rigidity underpin outstanding performance.
Intelligent lightweight construction plays a key role in achieving the individual performance characteristics of the BMW M3 CS Touring, with extensive use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) employed to minimise weight. CFRP components include the bonnet, front splitter, front air intakes, exterior mirror caps and rear diffuser. Moving inside, the M Carbon bucket seats and CFRP steering wheel shift paddles, interior trim strips and centre console also contribute towards weight reduction. These measures amount to a total weight saving of approximately 15 kilograms compared to the BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive.

Body rigidity is further increased by high-precision M front end strut braces – also engineered for lightness. The cast aluminium elements, connecting the spring strut towers to the front end, feature a weight-optimised geometry that has been precisely matched to the forces applied in various driving situations.

Balancing performance with everyday practicality – exclusive design features.
The BMW M3 CS Touring combines thrilling M performance with a versatile body concept, offering generous space, particularly in the rear where storage capacity can be expanded from 500 litres to a maximum of 1,510 litres.

As standard, the special edition is equipped with an array of exposed carbon fibre components, including the front splitter, front air intakes and M exterior mirror caps. All of which draw a visually striking contrast with four exterior paint options. Customers can choose from three BMW Individual colours: British Racing Green, Laguna Seca Blue or Frozen Solid White in addition to Black Sapphire metallic. The roof and model-specific roof spoiler are painted in Black high-gloss. Exclusive to the BMW M3 CS Touring, the roof spoiler is additionally topped with an eye-catching red contour.

The front-end design is characterised by a weight-minimised, stripped-back and frameless BMW M kidney grille, where black model lettering adorns the upper of the two horizontal grille slats. The kidney grille is also bordered by a CS-specific red contour line. The model badge at the front and its counterpart on the boot lid also have black surfaces with a red contour. Positioned either side of the kidney grille are LED icon headlights which glow yellow in a clear homage to motorsport.

Driver-focused cockpit with model-specific features.
The interior of the BMW M3 CS Touring blends a performance-focused cockpit with digital technology and exclusive design features. Electrically adjustable and heated M Carbon bucket seats are fitted as standard for the driver and front passenger. Each have integral head restraints, an illuminated “CS” model badge and surfaces in full Merino leather. Their exclusive Black/Red design is also adopted by the rear seats and all door panels are trimmed with black leather.

The standard M Alcantara steering wheel in three-spoke design – with its flat-bottomed rim and red centre marker in the 12 o’clock position – brings an authentic racing flair to the cabin. Further M-specific details include the red “CS” badge on the centre console, M seat belts and door sill plates which also bear the model designation.

Setup buttons for a customisable driving experience.
An M-specific Setup button on the centre console provides direct access to the settings for the engine, chassis, steering, brakes and M xDrive. In addition, two individually configurable setup variants can be stored permanently (and retrieved) using the M buttons on the steering wheel, offering drivers further customisation for the engine sound, DSC, Automatic Start/Stop function and the shift characteristics of the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.

The BMW M3 CS Touring also comes as standard with the M Drive Professional system with track-optimised functions such as the M Drift Analyser and M Laptimer. This system also includes 10-stage M Traction Control to provide a fully customisable driving experience on the track. Another feature of M Drive Professional is the M Mode button on the centre console, which can be used to configure the driver assistance systems and the content shown on both the information display and Head-Up Display. Drivers can choose between ROAD, SPORT and TRACK settings here.

BMW Curved Display with Operating System 8.5.
The BMW M3 CS Touring features the BMW Curved Display and BMW Operating System 8.5 to provide intuitive control over numerous vehicle functions and digital services, many of which can also be operated via the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. The M-specific view on the 12.3-inch information display features M Shift Lights at its upper edge, while the status of the driving stability systems, M xDrive and traction control can be found in the lower portion of the screen. Widgets for vehicle setup, tyre pressure and temperature are accessible via the home screen of the 14.9-inch control display.

A standard specification to enhance driving pleasure and comfort in everyday use.
Additional standard-specification features include BMW Live Cockpit Professional which, alongside the BMW Head-Up Display with M-specific content, brings the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps, smartphone integration, telephony with wireless charging and a WiFi interface.

The BMW M3 CS Touring is also equipped with Comfort Access, two-zone automatic climate control and the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System as standard. BMW Group UK has made a strong start to the new year, picking up four coveted category wins at the prestigious What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2025. BMW collected three headline awards – with the BMW M3 Touring, BMW 4 Series and BMW X7 continuing to lead their respective classes – and a further six subcategory wins. Meanwhile, MINI was named Most Reliable Manufacturer.

The BMW M3 Touring retains its Performance Car of the Year title for the second consecutive year. Commenting on the win, Steve Huntingford, Editor of What Car? said, “The M3 Touring is one of those cars that's built to handle every scenario you can throw at it – and it does so with devastating effectiveness. Relatively compact exterior dimensions allow it to dance through corners, while its twin-turbo straight-six engine hits all the right notes. Yet the M3 Touring is just as capable of playing the practical and classy family car when circumstances demand."

The BMW 4 Series celebrated its win as What Car? Coupé/Convertible of the Year, continuing its impressive streak in the convertible category, where it has been named ‘Best Convertible’ for five consecutive years. The second-generation 4 Series received an array of updates last year, including a refreshed exterior design, striking new headlights and a redesigned cockpit. On presenting the award, Huntingford said, "While many convertibles feel vague and ponderous compared with their coupé sisters, the 4 Series is great to drive whether you go for the hard-top or the soft-top. The 4 Series is also a full four-seater, with enough space in the back for a couple of six-footers. And its interior combines high-quality materials with a class-leading infotainment system”.

The BMW X7 garnered BMW’s third category win of the evening after being crowned Luxury Car of the Year. The latest variant of the BMW X7 was introduced in 2022, and  has since been widely recognised for its premium feel, exceptional level of standard equipment and spaciousness – with room for up to seven passengers thanks to three rows of seats. What Car? judges praised the model, stating, “The BMW X7 is the rolling embodiment of the sort of houses you see on TV's Grand Designs: spacious, striking and beautifully constructed. What's more, the optional Ultimate Pack makes the interior of this luxury SUV even more cosseting, and brings upgraded air suspension that delivers a more stable and luxurious ride than any rival can offer."

The MINI brand was also recognised on the night as What Car?’s Most Reliable Manufacturer. Highlighting the dependability of MINI’s product range, Huntingford commented, "MINI had the lowest fault rate of any brand featured in the 2024 What Car? Reliability Survey. What's more, on the rare occasions things did go wrong, all of the cars remained driveable and almost half of issues were resolved in a day or less. MINI even showed that going electric is no barrier to producing dependable models, with the MINI Electric achieving a hugely impressive 98.4% reliability score”.

Alongside the above overall category wins, a further six BMW models were recognised for their excellence within sub-categories.

Three vehicles within BMW’s fully electric portfolio were commended. The first was the BMW i7, which topped the Best Electric Luxury Car category, adding a further win to the flagship’s growing list of accolades. Meanwhile, the BMW iX won the Family SUV Best Interior award – a testament to its meticulously crafted and comfortable cabin. The BMW i5 also stood out for its interior, winning the Best Executive Car Interior for a second consecutive year.

In addition, the recently revised BMW 330e which now offers up to 63 miles (WLTP, combined) of all-electric range was recognised as the Best Plug-in Hybrid to Drive. The BMW M240i Coupe won Best Performance Car for Value, with judges commending the model’s comprehensive offering at its price point. Finally, the BMW 1 Series won the award for Best Family Car Interior, continuing its success in this category from the previous year. Launched last year, the fourth-generation BMW 1 Series boasts a premium and versatile cabin with class-leading interior technology.

The sculptural front end, prominently flared wheel arches, long roofline, dynamically stretched side window graphic and powerful rear end play a formative role in giving the new BMW M5 Touring its inimitable, motor racing-inspired aura. And the model-specific BMW M Performance Parts for the exterior enrich the car’s athletic appearance with exclusive details that turn heads from every angle.

The two-section M Performance rear diffuser carbon fibre adds a particularly prominent accent. With its strikingly cut bars, it shines an even more intense spotlight on the muscular appearance of the rear end. Paired with the M Performance tailpipe trims for the exhaust system, it has an extremely effective visual impact. These trims are made from a titanium/carbon fibre mix and send out a crystal clear message of uncompromising performance with their milled titanium end rings and embossed M5 logo. The M Performance rear fins carbon fibre set an understated seal on the aerodynamic overall concept and add another sporting ingredient to the new BMW M5 Touring.

Finely judged enhancements for the design and aerodynamics also feature at the front of the new BMW M5 Touring. The M Performance front splitter carbon fibre, for example, fits neatly into the overall structure and showcases the central air intake to even more eye-catching effect. When viewing the car from the side, the M Performance sill extensions carbon fibre create an attractive visual connection with the stretched roofline of the new BMW M5 Touring. They emphasise the athletic aesthetic of the body’s side frame, which has a model-specific design – especially when the M Performance side decals Frozen Black are also specified. Additional highlights of the side view are the M exterior mirror caps carbon fibre and the M Performance aerial cover aramid. A high-tech fibre composite material, aramid has similar properties to carbon fibre, while also offering high electromagnetic permeability.

Authentic racing-car aura inside and outside the cockpit.

The M Performance fuel tank cap carbon fibre turns every refuel into a small pit stop. It is made from high-quality carbon fibre and has M Performance badging in brushed aluminium. The interior of the new BMW M5 Touring already majors on sporting appeal as standard, but it too can be given a finishing touch in the form of the M Performance floor mats. The four-piece set brings together high-quality leather-look edging with decorative stitching in contrasting colours and a sewn-in ribbon in the colours of BMW M GmbH.

The M Performance key case also exudes a clear sense of racing passion. The high-quality cover – made from Alcantara and leather in carbon fibre look – protects the car key against scratches and can be attached by means of a leather tab on the key fob. Meanwhile, the M Performance tyre bags provide unbeatable protection for wheel sets during transportation and storage. These also follow the bold M Performance design approach, come with markings indicating the wheel position, and have a reinforced handle for easy transportation.

All the BMW M Performance Parts have been developed with the help of over five decades of expertise amassed by BMW M GmbH. The products offered for the new BMW M5 Touring have been tested according to the BMW Group’s stringent quality guidelines and have undergone homologation alongside the overall vehicle, which means separate registration with the vehicle licensing authorities is not required.

BMW M GmbH first introduced a Touring variant back in 1992 alongside the second generation of the BMW M5 Saloon. In 2007, the fourth generation of the high-performance saloon also gained a BMW M5 Touring sibling. And now the new edition ensures customers will be able to choose from two body variants of the BMW M5 for the third time in its 40-year history.

As such, the all-new BMW M5 Touring satisfies the wish list of demanding enthusiasts who value the hallmark dynamic prowess of an M machine and the refined performance of a BMW M5, but do not want to forego the additional load space, practicality and long-distance comfort of a Touring model. In fact, the new BMW M5 Touring has up to 1,630 litres of flexible load-carrying capacity for leisure activities and trips away.

With its fresh take on the traditional BMW M design playbook, the new BMW M5 Touring brings its racing-car-inspired character to the fore. Its M-specific design cues are focused on fulfilling their functional brief when it comes to cooling and aerodynamic balance. The pronounced roof spoiler and heavily raked, slim D-pillar underscore the car’s dynamic lines.

A high proportion of surfaces painted in body colour offer visual purity and references to the high-performance sports car’s top-class dynamics, while prominently flared wheel arches, side skirts and the M-specific design of the front and rear aprons distinguish the BMW M5 Touring clearly from the BMW 5 Series Touring.

The overall concept of the new BMW M5 Touring enables it to deliver an enthralling driving experience on the track as well as in everyday use and longer journeys. Alongside its long wheelbase, wide tracks, a low centre of gravity and almost perfect 50:50 weight distribution, the new BMW M5 Touring features a body with improved rigidity and enhanced aerodynamics, as well as chassis technology in a model-specific configuration that has been carefully tuned for the M HYBRID drive system.

As in the BMW M5 Saloon, the BMW M5 Touring’s M HYBRID system produces a maximum output of 727 hp and peak torque of 1,000 Nm to deliver intoxicating performance on road and track alike. At the same time, the partly electrified powertrain enables almost silent and locally emission-free driving with a range of up to 42 miles (WLTP), while the Combined Charging Unit allows AC charging at up to 11 kW.

The new BMW M5 Touring will be unveiled publicly at Monterey Car Week in California in mid-August 2024. It will be built at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing alongside the new BMW M5 Saloon starting in November, with first UK customer deliveries from early 2025.

Athletic silhouette with elegantly stretched Touring proportions.
Viewed from the side, the distinctive character of the new BMW M5 Touring is accentuated by the elegantly stretched roofline and a model-specific roof spoiler. The whole side frame of the body has been redesigned for the high-performance model with a confident, sporting aesthetic as the aim.

As a result, the new BMW M5 Touring is 75 mm wider at the front wheel arches than the BMW 5 Series Touring and 48 mm wider at the rear. With an exterior length of 5,096 mm and width of 1,970 mm (matching the dimensions of the BMW M5 Saloon), the high-performance model is 36 mm longer than the BMW 5 Series Touring and 70 mm wider. It stands 1,516 mm tall, which means it almost precisely mirrors it in height.

The side window graphic tapers in the rear section of the body, generating a powerful shoulder area highlighted by the prominent wheel arch extensions specific to the new BMW M5 Touring. In contrast to the BMW M5 Saloon, the character line above the flush door handles extends to the rear lights on the Touring model and brings an extra touch of elegance to the distinctive silhouette. Side skirts painted in body colour round off the muscular style. The hunkered-down body with front and rear aprons extending down almost to the road surface lend additional emphasis to the physically imposing proportions. The aerodynamically and aeroacoustically optimised M exterior mirror caps are painted in Black high-gloss and can be specified as an option in carbon fibre.

Broad, powerful rear end with monolithic surface treatment.
The new BMW M5 Touring cuts a muscular and visually striking figure at the rear. As at the front of the car, generously sized surfaces create a monolithic appearance and confidently showcase the expressive rear end. The flared rear wheel arches team up with the slim rear lights extending into the sides of the car and the vertical reflectors at the far outer edges of the rear to accentuate its width and powerful stature.

Along with the roof spoiler, an eye-catching two-section diffuser helps to optimise the car’s aerodynamics and increase traction. The diffuser’s vertical divider references the split in the centre of the front apron, introducing another design feature adapted from racing-car design. In addition, the familiar M twin exhaust tailpipes in Black Chrome are integrated into the left and right of the rear apron.

M HYBRID drive system with intoxicating performance and impressive electric range.
The third Touring variant in the history of the BMW M5, the new BMW M5 Touring now comes with an electrified drive system for the first time. The model-specific version of the M HYBRID system brings together a high-revving 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor integrated into the transmission. The combustion engine and electric motor generate a combined output of 727 hp and peak torque of 1,000 Nm.

The instantly available torque from the electric motor and the V8 engine’s appetite for revs pave the way for remarkable acceleration. The BMW M5 Touring sprints to 62 mph from rest in 3.6 seconds and reaches 124 mph in 11.1 seconds. The 1,000 Nm maximum system torque of the M HYBRID drive additionally provides outstanding mid-range acceleration, which is reflected in a 50 – 75 mph time of 3.1 seconds in fifth gear. The limited top speed of 155 mph can be raised to 189 mph by specifying the optional M Driver’s Package.

The high output of the electric motor also enables it to drive with zero tailpipe emissions in all-electric operating mode – not just in urban traffic, but also further afield. Top speed with electric power only is 87 mph and electric range in the WLTP test cycle is 38 – 42 miles.

Extremely stiff body structure with M-specific bracing elements.
A package of precisely interlinked M-specific bracing elements focused on enhancing driving dynamics increases the stiffness of the body structure. At the front, a shear panel connects the spring strut towers with the bulkhead, along with model-specific tower-to-front end struts. Further strengthening elements can be found in the centre and rear sections of the engine compartment.

In the rear body, the new BMW M5 Touring comes with model-specific underfloor bracing elements, including a cross-bar and a shear panel, as well as further stiffening elements for the luggage compartment. Added to which, the mountings connecting the chassis to the body and the steering to the front axle subframe also have exceptional torsional rigidity.

Custom-tuned chassis technology for maximum prowess and superb long-distance comfort.
The new BMW M5 Touring has exceptional dynamic handling thanks to the model-specific kinematic and elastokinematic properties of its sophisticated chassis. The double-wishbone front axle optimises longitudinal and lateral rigidity, while the selective use of aluminium components lowers the weight of the unsprung mass. Newly designed wheel carriers, bespoke axle kinematics with large castor and kingpin angles, a lowered roll centre and model-specific elastomer bearings produce a matchless combination of dynamic potency and finely balanced comfort; the perfect recipe for everyday driving and longer journeys.

M multifunction seats enhance racing-car feeling and comfort over longer journeys.
The driver and front passenger are welcomed as standard by M multifunction seats offering comfort for long journeys, along with seat heating, multi-way electric adjustment and a memory function. The integral head restraints with illuminated model lettering retract to their lowest position as the occupants leave the car. Active seat ventilation for the driver and front passenger and seat heating for the outer rear seats are available as options.

Optional panoramic glass sunroof.
The roof of the new BMW M5 Touring is painted in a Black solid finish as standard. There is also the option of a panoramic glass sunroof, which is designed as a body-mounted module and extends in a single section from just behind the windscreen deep into the rear of the vehicle. This floods the interior with light and gives the exterior an even more elegant appearance that is neatly set off by roof trim strips in Black high-gloss. An electrically operated roller blind, part of the Comfort or Ultimate Pack, is on hand to provide interior shading.

Modern functionality for everyday use, leisure and longer journeys.
The backrests of the rear seats can be split 40:20:40 and folded down as standard to expand load capacity from 500 litres to a maximum of 1,630. The new BMW M5 Touring is also equipped with a through-loading facility as standard, making it easier to transport larger items of luggage and long items of sports equipment. Automatic tailgate operation and Comfort Access are part of standard specification, enabling hands-free opening and closing of the tailgate. A trailer coupling that extends and retracts electrically is available as an option. The maximum trailer load of the new BMW M5 Touring is 2,000 kg.

Assistance systems for assured and comfortable driving.

The new BMW M5 Touring offers a wealth of standard and optional systems for assisted driving and parking, offering assurance and comfort in day-to-day driving. Standard specification includes features such as front collision warning, Lane Departure Warning including lane return with steering assistance, the Evasion Assistant, the Attentiveness Assistant and the Speed Limit Info system. The optional Driving Assistant Professional adds Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function together with tech including the Steering and Lane Control Assistant, traffic light detection, automatic Speed Limit Assist and Active Navigation.

The optionally available Parking Assistant Professional also enables automated parking and manoeuvring over distances of up to 200 metres, controllable either from inside the car or remotely via smartphone.

Greater flexibility to personalise the driving experience.

The control panel on the centre console of the new BMW M5 Touring houses an M5-specific composition of buttons, which can be used to tailor the driving experience to individual preferences in a variety of ways. The Setup button provides direct access to the configuration of the drive system, Drivelogic, chassis, steering, braking system and M xDrive, as well as the intensity of brake energy recuperation. Two overall vehicle setups can be stored and selected quickly using the M buttons on the steering wheel. The Launch Control function is available in all the M Setup configurations, except for the M xDrive system’s 2WD mode.

Pressing the DSC button activates M Dynamic Mode, increasing the DSC intervention thresholds for brake inputs and engine power reduction. Alternatively, DSC can be switched off completely. Another button allows the driver to select M Mode. When they switch from the default ROAD setting to SPORT, interventions from the driver assistance systems are restricted to just the essential functions required for sporty driving, as is the content shown in the information display. The standard-fit M Drive Professional, also enables the use of TRACK mode, with other features including the M Laptimer and the Boost Control function, which maximises longitudinal dynamics when executing mid-range sprints and overtaking manoeuvres.

The operating mode of the M HYBRID system can also be adjusted as desired. The new M Hybrid button allows the driver to choose between HYBRID mode – for intelligently controlled interplay between the combustion engine and electric motor to maximise either efficiency or performance, depending on the driving situation – and the ELECTRIC setting, in which the combustion engine is only brought into play by accelerator kickdown or using the gearshift paddles. eCONTROL mode is used for effective brake energy recuperation and maintaining battery charge at a constant level. In addition, DYNAMIC mode focuses on a balanced system power for consistent performance during track driving, while the DYNAMIC PLUS mode delivers full system power for maximum performance on the racetrack in short burst (e.g. qualifying).

Progressive sports car cockpit, M-specific displays on the BMW Curved Display, exclusive ambience.

In addition to the M-specific control panel on the centre console, the progressive sports car cockpit in the new BMW M5 Touring features the flat-bottomed M leather steering wheel with illuminated M buttons, M multifunction seats with extensive electric adjustment options, and the BMW Curved Display, which, like the standard BMW Head-Up Display, includes M-specific content. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional also brings the BMW Maps navigation system and the Augmented View function on the control display.

An upgraded version of BMW iDrive features as standard in the new BMW M5 Touring. It is based on BMW Operating System 8.5 and designed with touch control and natural speech in mind. The digital tech now also covers the controls for the climate control functions, with temperature selection, airflow intensity, seat heating and steering wheel heating now controlled by touch screen via permanent buttons in the lower section of the control display or by voice command.

Also playing their part in the exclusive interior ambience are the standard Merino leather trim, the BMW Interaction Bar, four-zone air conditioning, heated front seats, ambient lighting with M-specific interior lighting including Welcome and Goodbye Animation. Standard specification on the new BMW M5 also includes the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, a wireless charging tray, Comfort Access, automatic tailgate operation and the charging cable Professional for charging during a journey. The options list includes the M Carbon mirror caps, an Alcantara headliner, active seat ventilation, and a trailer tow hitch.

For almost 50 years, the BMW 3 Series has represented the core of the BMW brand. It epitomises sporty driving pleasure in the premium midsize class and has made significant contributions to design, driving dynamics and technological innovations in this segment time and again across seven model generations. The extensive design, powertrain, digitalisation and equipment revisions already introduced in 2022 will now be followed with a fresh package of updates that take the cars’ visual appeal and cutting-edge modernity to new levels. New high-voltage batteries increase the electric range of the plug-in-hybrid models to a maximum of 63 miles in the WLTP cycle. New chassis tuning further enhances the balance between sporting agility and comfort. The new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring will also now feature BMW Operating System 8.5 which provides the basis for intuitive and comfortable operation via the upgraded BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and new navigation functions including Augmented View.

These new technological advances are accompanied by precise design modifications for the exterior and interior. New exterior paint finishes and light-alloy wheels accentuate the sporting elegance exuded by the Saloon and Touring. Newly designed steering wheels and instrument panel and sophisticated optional features such as the Crafted Clarity glass applications further elevate the sophistication of the 3 Series interior.

The new BMW 3 Series Saloon is priced from £39,045 and BMW 3 Series Touring from £40,845. Both models will begin production from July 2024, with UK customer deliveries starting in the summer. BMW Group Plant Munich will be building both models, while the BMW 3 Series Saloon will also be produced at BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí in Mexico.

BMW 3 Series is the market leader in the premium segment of its class.

The most important sales markets for the new BMW 3 Series are China, Germany, the UK and other European countries, as well as the USA. This is especially true of the Saloon, while the Touring model is particularly in demand in Europe. Its distinctive design and increased practicality also means that it is also popular in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.

The BMW 3 Series embodies the brand's hallmark features of driving pleasure, elegantly sporty design and sustained technological progress ever since its debut in 1975. More than 20 million examples of the BMW 3 Series have been sold around the world to date, with the current, seventh model generation now accounting for almost three million of these. Recent figures showed the BMW 3 Series to be the market leader in the premium segment of the midsize class in China, Europe and the USA. As things stand, one in every eight vehicles delivered by the brand worldwide is a 3 Series and in some markets, 3 Series accounts for 25 – 35 per cent of total BMW sales. 

An unwavering commitment to carbon footprint reduction.

Highly efficient drive systems, intelligent lightweight design and optimised aerodynamic attributes are key contributors to the fine balance between driving pleasure and low fuel consumption and emissions struck by the new BMW 3 Series. The 48V mild hybrid technology used in certain models both sharpens power delivery and enhances efficiency. The bonnet, front side panels, engine subframe, front spring struts and numerous chassis components are all made from aluminium. The proportion of secondary raw materials used in cast aluminium parts for the BMW 3 Series is around 50 per cent. And the aluminium wheel rims offered for the Saloon and Touring are made up of as much as around 70 per cent recycled aluminium.

The externally procured electricity used in production of the new BMW 3 Series at BMW Group Plant Munich is generated from renewable sources. The BMW 3 Series also plays its part in helping the BMW Group to meet its exacting CO₂ targets by consistently increasing vehicle efficiency. The BMW Group has set itself the goal of cutting life-cycle CO₂ emissions per vehicle by at least 40 per cent by 2030 compared to 2019. By 2050 at the latest, the company is aiming for net zero in terms of CO₂e emissions throughout the value chain.

The BMW Group continued the ongoing reduction in its fleet CO₂ emissions across the European car markets in 2023. The company posted a provisional figure of 102.1 grams per kilometre in the WLTP cycle – 20 per cent below the target of 128.5 g/km set by the European Union.

 
Exterior design, interior and equipment. Progressive aura, refined ambience.

More than ever, sporting elegance and modernity define the design of the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring. Their driving pleasure-focused character is expressed in clear lines and generously sculpted surfaces, while the sophisticated design of the BMW kidney grille and twin circular headlights – both signature brand features – gives the front end an unmistakable appearance. Eye-catching front and rear aprons underscore the cars’ dynamic profile, which can be further accentuated by specifying choosing M Sport model trim or selecting the optional M Sport Pro package.

The BMW 3 Series can now also be ordered with new exterior paint finishes and light-alloy wheels to add an extra touch of individualisation. In the interior, the progressive cockpit design featuring the BMW Curved Display is further enhanced by new steering wheels, visual modifications for the instrument panel and modernised decorative elements. The new M Performtex seat surface is included as standard on M Sport models and above.

Fresh design updates enhance the sporting elegance of the exterior.

The new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring are available in two solid and seven metallic paint finishes, with Arctic Race Blue metallic and Fire Red metallic both new additions to the colour palette.

BMW 3 Series models ordered in M Sport will be available with new 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design, giving their side view an even more dynamic appearance. Customers can order these wheels in either a Jet Black finish or a bi-colour variant. Meanwhile, the BMW Individual range for the Saloon and Touring models also includes new 19-inch light-alloy wheels in Y-spoke design and a bi-colour finish. All the new light-alloy wheels are fitted with mixed-size tyres.

Progressive cockpit with new sports leather steering wheels.

Advanced new features have also been introduced in the interior of the Saloon and Touring models, giving the cockpit a clean and pared-back look. Newly designed steering wheels add further intensity to the driving experience, while the optional Luxury instrument panel in Sensatec has a further refined surface structure and decorative stitching in a contrasting colour.

The latest-generation steering wheels in the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring stand out with their modern and sporty design. Both models come as standard with a fundamentally redesigned sports leather steering wheel with a polygonal rim in two-spoke design. The M Sport models bring a new M leather steering wheel with three spokes, a flat-bottomed rim and a discreet centre marking in the 12 o’clock position. Both of the newly designed steering wheels have illuminated multifunction buttons and gearshift paddles. Fitted as standard, the paddles enable swift manual interventions in the gear selection process and underscore the sporting profile of the new BMW 3 Series.

Digital climate control, selectable light moods.

The introduction of the latest-generation BMW iDrive with QuickSelect based on BMW Operating System 8.5 in the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring also brings optimised operation of the ventilation and climate control functions. Temperature selection, intensity of ventilation, seat heating and – if specified – steering wheel heating can now be adjusted on the BMW Curved Display or by voice command with the help of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. New adjustment controls for the air vent grilles in the centre of the instrument panel and on the driver’s and front passenger side of the cockpit allow the intensity and direction of airflow to be adjusted using rotating and tilting movements.

The interior lighting now includes cascade lighting integrated into the trim around the central seam vents as standard. It can be adjusted for colour and brightness according to personal preference, with users able to select from nine colour worlds. Their choice of colour and brightness settings are stored as part of their profile. If the optional ambient lighting (standard in the M Performance models) is specified, the individually adjustable light mood also extends to the front footwells, the storage compartment in the front section of the centre console and the contour lines of the door panel trims. The functionality of the interior lighting also includes an atmospheric Welcome and Goodbye Animation and light signals indicating an incoming phone call and optionally also an open door.

New seat surfaces in M Performtex.

As an alternative to the black cloth seat surfaces fitted as standard in Sport models, the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring can also be ordered with sport seats in Sensatec perforated. These are available in Black, Tacora Red or Cognac. The optional Vernasca leather trim is now offered in four colour variants.

The black surfaces of the sport seats in new M Performtex trim embody progressive sporting appeal. They are included as standard for M Sport models and both M340i derivatives. This innovative covering combines high material quality and a sporty design with low weight and a sustainability-optimised production method. M Sport and M340i models can also be ordered with sport seats and M sport seats in Vernasca leather with black surfaces and blue contrast quilting.

New interior trim elements, exclusive accents with CraftedClarity. 

Extensive revisions have also been made to the range of interior trim elements. Dark Graphite matt comes as standard in the new BMW 3 Series, while Fineline Light open-pored and Grey Blue Ash open-pored fine-wood trim, plus the Carbon Fibre and Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite variants, can all be found on the options list.

Customers can now specify CraftedClarity glass applications – another new addition to the options list – which gives the gear selector lever, BMW iDrive Controller and Start/Stop button a particular air of exclusivity, both visually and in how they feel to the touch.

Extensive standard equipment, high-quality options.

Standard specification for the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring in Sport trim includes 17-inch (plug-in-hybrid models: 18-inch) light-alloy wheels, M High-gloss Shadow Line, a rear-view mirror with automatic anti-dazzle function and the Parking Assistant which includes Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors at the front and rear. Three-zone automatic climate control and BMW Live Cockpit Plus with the BMW Curved Display including BMW Maps navigation system are also fitted as standard.

The Touring model comes as standard with automatic tailgate operation and a 40 : 20 : 40 split/folding rear seat backrest, which is available as an option for the Saloon. Among the highlights on the list of individual options allowing customers to adapt the interior to their requirements and tastes are – alongside sport seats and ambient lighting – the Harman Kardon surround sound system, an electrically operated glass roof for the Saloon and a panoramic glass sunroof for the Touring model.

Powertrain and driving experience. Greater electric range for plug-in-hybrid models and improved ride comfort.

The BMW 3 Series Saloon and Touring models are each offered in the UK with a choice of three petrol engines featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology – including the exceptionally powerful six- cylinder in-line unit for the M340i models. All new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring models come equipped with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard, complete with shift paddles on the steering wheel for quick manual interventions in the gear selection process.

The engines available for the BMW 3 Series in the UK produce outputs ranging from 184 hp up to the range topping M340i xDrive, with its six-cylinder in-line petrol engine producing 374 hp. The six-cylinder in-line petrol unit comes with mild hybrid technology for more dynamic power delivery and greater efficiency, with the 48V starter generator putting an extra 11 hp on tap.

New high-voltage battery for plug-in-hybrid models.

The plug-in hybrid BMW 330e Saloon and BMW 330e Touring models take electrification a step further, with drive technology comprising a four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, which together generate a combined system output of 292 hp.

These latest plug-in-hybrid BMW 3 Series models boast even greater efficiency and a considerably longer electric range. This has been made possible by the switch to a new high- voltage battery with 19.5 kWh of usable energy. The product of fifth- generation BMW eDrive technology, it has a much higher energy density than the battery previously fitted in BMW 3 Series plug-in-hybrid models.

The new BMW Gen5 high-voltage battery represents a leap forward, bringing an improvement in all the relevant technical statistics. The high energy density at both cell and battery pack level combines with higher voltages to bring about a major increase in system efficiency. Although the high-voltage battery’s usable energy has nearly doubled, the amount of space in the interior and load compartment remains unchanged, as does fuel tank capacity.

These latest advances in battery technology open up greater scope for experiencing pure-electric driving pleasure in a BMW 3 Series, with the new BMW 330e Saloon offering electric range figures of 53 – 63 miles, and the new BMW 330e Touring offering 54 – 61 miles. This allows drivers to complete not only urban journeys and the daily commute with zero local emissions, but longer trips too.

More advanced charging technology is also on hand to help drivers use all-electric drive power as extensively as possible. The new charging unit supports three-phase AC charging at up to 11 kW, the first time that such a high rate has been available for a plug-in hybrid from BMW. This enables the high-voltage battery to be fully recharged from empty in 2 hours 15 minutes.

Chassis offers an even better blend of sportiness and comfort.

Both the BMW 3 Series Saloon and Touring have always set the standard for driving dynamics in their respective segments, and now the chassis technology found within the new BMW 3 Series range also benefits from further development work. The blend of sporting flair and ride comfort for which the 3 Series is renowned has been further refined across all model variants with a series of targeted updates. The stiffer mounting connecting the rear dampers to the body is just one of the measures used to achieve this.

Drivers will enjoy a notable increase in comfort across all driving situations – regardless of the road surface conditions and the selected driving mode – without any loss of the customary 3 Series dynamic prowess. This development work has also had a positive impact on acoustics when the car is handling peak forces triggered by the road surface. As a result, its handling has even greater overall precision, composure and controllability. The force needed to turn the steering wheel has been reduced in Comfort mode to achieve superior steering comfort in everyday driving.

The M Sport suspension is included as standard on M Sport models, with the Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers and variable sport steering is available as an option.

Advanced assistance systems for driving and parking.

A wide selection of assistance systems enhance comfort and safety when driving and parking in the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring. The front collision warning system with brake intervention, Cruise Control with brake function and the new Intelligent Speed Assistance function are some of the features that come as standard. The standout optional extra is Driving Assistant Professional, available as part of the Technology package and comprising the Steering and Lane Control Assistant and Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, plus automatic Speed Limit Assist, route speed control, traffic light recognition, the Evasion Assistant, Crossroads Warning with city braking function, Wrong-way Warning and Front Crossing Traffic Warning.

Besides Park Distance Control, the standard Parking Assistant also enables automated manoeuvring into and out of parking spaces, as well as featuring a Reversing Assist Camera and the Reversing Assistant. There is also the option of the Parking Assistant Plus with Surround View and Remote 3D View functions.

 
M340i models offer a powerful and distinctive character.

The sporting character of the new BMW 3 Series can be experienced in a highly concentrated format with the range-topping M340i models from BMW M GmbH. Featuring powerful six-cylinder in-line engines, a bespoke chassis set-up and signature M design cues both inside and out, the distinctive personality of these elite sporting models clearly shines through in both the driving experience and their looks. And there is now a new steering wheel and new seat upholstery to freshen up the cockpit.

M340i models feature a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine with 3.0 litre displacement and M-typical performance attributes. This engine’s healthy appetite for revs and instantaneous power delivery are the result of the latest M TwinPower Turbo technology and 48V mild hybrid technology, with an output of 11 hp which produces an electric boost effect. The straight-six power units are paired with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with an ultra-sharp shift action and the BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system is also on hand as standard to enhance agility and traction.

The six-cylinder in-line petrol engine in the BMW M340i xDrive Saloon and BMW M340i xDrive Touring generates maximum output of 374 hp and peak torque of 500 Nm. M Sport suspension with variable sport steering, the M Sport differential and M Sport brakes are also included as standard to deliver the blend of dynamic longitudinal and lateral performance, precision and exhilaration at the wheel for which M models are renowned.

Individual look with M-specific design features.

The performance capabilities of these top models are clearly flagged by M-specific design features crafted to meet technical requirements in terms of aerodynamics and cooling air supply. These include the large air intakes in the front apron, along with the M exterior mirror caps in Black high-gloss and the rear apron with its prominently styled diffuser. The BMW M340i xDrive Saloon also sports a body-coloured M rear spoiler.

A mesh-design BMW kidney grille, exclusive 18-inch M light-alloy wheels and trapezoidal exhaust tailpipe trim further add to the individual appearance of the range-topping models. The M Sport Pro pack is also available for these models.

Modern sports car ambience in the cabin.

Inside the M Performance models, M-specific equipment details help to deliver a focused driving experience in a modern sports car ambience. Black sport seats in the new M Performtex upholstery are now fitted as standard, while there is also the option of M Sport seats covered in Vernasca leather that come in Black with blue contrast quilting.

A new version of the M leather steering wheel dials up the intensity of the performance experience with its flat-bottomed rim, red centre marker and contrast stitching in BMW M GmbH colours. Interior trim strips in the new Aluminium fine-brushed finish, M door sill trim, M pedals, an M driver’s footrest and M-specific graphics for the BMW Curved Display are further standard features that help to imbue the flagship sporting models with their distinctive personality.

The new BMW Operating System 8.5 and innovative digital services.

The latest version of the BMW iDrive display and control/operation system with QuickSelect is fitted in the new edition of the BMW 3 Series Saloon and BMW 3 Series Touring, enabling vehicle functions to be controlled intuitively and providing access to digital services. It is now based on BMW Operating System 8.5 and features a new-look home screen and QuickSelect rapid-access tech, bringing an improved menu structure that takes its cue from consumer electronics devices.

Working in tandem with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Personal Assistant, the new BMW iDrive is geared towards touch and natural voice control. The climate control functions, including the seat heating and – if fitted – the steering wheel heating, are also now controlled digitally.

BMW iDrive with QuickSelect allows functions to be selected directly from the home screen with rapid-access tech.

The BMW iDrive home screen now continuously displays the navigation system’s map view in a large format or another individually selectable view. The system’s QuickSelect functionality also paves the way for a flatter menu structure, enabling the driver to select the desired function directly from the home screen without any need to enter submenus.

On the driver’s side of the control display, there is a bar of widgets for accessing numerous functions, including media or mobile phone, which can be navigated by swiping vertically. Swiping a widget horizontally displays additional related information and settings options. The widget bar can be customised by installing new widgets, removing existing ones or changing their arrangement.

The home icon at the lower edge of the control display makes it possible to return to the home screen from any application with a simple tap. Icons for direct access to the climate control menu, All Apps menu and, if activated, Apple CarPlay^® and Android Auto^TM can also now be found next to the home icon.

Enhanced navigation with BMW Maps and Augmented View.

The BMW Maps navigation system forming part of the standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus in the new 3 Series range makes it easier to input destinations and can offer additional information while driving. Further new features include better usability of filters, a flatter menu structure with touch buttons shown directly on the map view and proactive route recommendations.

The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional adds the BMW Head-Up Display and also the new Augmented View function. This supplements the navigation system’s map display by showing a live video stream of the driver’s view on the information display or control display and augmenting it with contextual real-time information. For example, at confusing junctions an animated directional arrow is integrated into the video image to help the driver take the correct turn-off for the planned route.

Individual user experience with the BMW ID and My BMW App.

The arrival of BMW Operating System 8.5 makes it even easier to personalise the user experience in the BMW 3 Series by simplifying the process for linking the vehicle with the driver’s BMW ID and My BMW App. Customers initially sign in to the vehicle with their BMW ID by scanning a QR code with their smartphone and the personal user profile is then imported automatically. Synchronisable settings are loaded and the key detected in the vehicle is associated with the BMW ID.

At the same time, the vehicle is added to the My BMW App – the universal interface that serves as a gateway to BMW’s digital ecosystem. It provides information on the vehicle’s status, its remaining range and any servicing and maintenance requirements. Depending on the car’s specification, it also enables access to various remote functions, such as locating the vehicle or locking and unlocking the doors. The optional Remote 3D View function gives drivers the ability to call up a three- dimensional live image of their vehicle’s immediate vicinity on their smartphone.

It is also possible to control the charging process for the plug-in-hybrid models from the My BMW App. This means that charging of the high- voltage battery can be started and stopped again either immediately or at a specified time and pre-conditioning can be activated remotely using a smartphone. The My BMW App also offers an overview of the charging history.

Drivers can also send destination addresses from their smartphone to the vehicle’s navigation system for route planning, or access the online BMW ConnectedDrive Store where upgrades and additional functions for the new BMW 3 Series can be initiated, purchased or extended over the air. The “My Trips” feature including Efficiency Trainer and monthly review provides the user with valuable data about distance travelled, consumption and average speed, as well as offering helpful tips for driving efficiently.

In addition to the vehicle’s built-in mobile SIM connectivity, customers can also use the Personal eSIM included in the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring as standard.

BMW M Performance Parts. Distinctive additions express the passion for motor sport.

In addition to the M Sport models and M Sport Pro package available from the factory, the BMW M Performance Parts range offer further scope for bringing even greater dynamic appeal to the appearance and driving properties of all the model variants.

These model-specific retrofit options from the Original BMW Accessories list were developed using the proven expertise of BMW M GmbH in motor sport. The aerodynamics and exterior components for the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring underscore the dynamic ability of the two models, as do the light-alloy wheels in the BMW M Performance Parts line-up.

They stand as custodians of a legendary badge and prime examples of the exhilarating performance and unrestricted everyday usability long established as a trademark of BMW M GmbH. Now the multi-faceted BMW M3 Saloon and BMW M3 Touring have further sharpened up their already impressive offerings, with a power hike of 20 hp for both model variants on sale in the UK, new design and equipment offerings and the latest in-car digital features.

The newly designed headlights and steering wheel bring fresh touches to the exterior and interior, which are joined by new forged light-alloy wheels, new interior trim elements and the introduction of BMW Operating System 8.5 to underpin the latest generation of BMW iDrive. This latest stage on their development curve takes the race-car character and long-distance poise and composure of the high-performance premium midsize models to another new level for the driver and up to four passengers.

The six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology fitted in the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 27.7 – 28.0 mpg; CO2 emissions, combined: 230 – 227 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO2 class: G) and new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 27.2 – 27.4 mpg; CO2 emissions, combined: 235 – 233 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO2 class: G), now produces an output of 530 hp, with the increased engine power channelled to all four wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive will continue to be built at BMW Group Plant Munich. With production beginning in July 2024, the models will launch worldwide from this summer. The most important sales regions for the BMW M3 Saloon are the USA, China, UK, Australia and Germany. The BMW M3 Touring is extremely popular above all in Germany, but also in the UK, other European countries and Australia.

Traditional race-car feeling, distinctive characters.

Now in its sixth model generation, the BMW M3 is more powerful, more poised and assured, more advanced and more versatile than ever. The saloon is continuing a high-performance sports car bloodline that stretches back almost 40 years. The first generation of the BMW M3, unveiled in 1986, went on to become the most successful model in touring car racing worldwide. Then, as now, a car’s success in motor sport was accompanied by steadily increasing popularity for the production model and rare levels of excitement for its owner out on the road.

The race-car feeling associated with the BMW M3 – present at the driver’s fingertips over every mile of a journey – can be experienced in totally different ways with this latest generation. The BMW M3 Saloon now lines up alongside a Touring model, the BMW M3 Touring fusing the performance attributes for which this model series is renowned with additional practicality and expanded load-carrying ability. Folding down the rear seat backrests increases load compartment capacity from 500 to a maximum 1,510 litres. In the UK, both models are available exclusively with the most powerful version of the six-cylinder in-line engine for the BMW M3/M4 and the M xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

With their distinct body concepts and specific qualities, the Saloon and Touring models occupy very different character spaces within the M3 range. One of their most important shared elements is their visually striking design with hallmark M features crafted precisely to meet the technical demands of cooling air supply and aerodynamic balance. The large, vertical BMW kidney grille with signature M double bars arranged horizontally, the powerfully sculpted wheel arches, the extended side skirts in contrasting Black high-gloss and the attachment parts for the front and rear aprons all provide clear pointers to the dynamic potential of the two models. The BMW M3 Saloon has a carbon-fibre roof as standard. The roof of the BMW M3 Touring, like its standard-fit roof rails, comes in black. It has a Gurney flap on the roof spoiler as an additional air-directing element.

Engine technology borrows from motor racing.

The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and the new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive feature a high-revving straight-six engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. The 3.0-litre unit stands out with its healthy appetite for revs into the highest reaches of the engine speed range and so produces the linear power delivery typical of high-performance models from BMW M GmbH.

Numerous elements adapted from race-car engine construction allow the power unit in the M3 to deliver an unmistakable performance experience on both road and track. The crankcase, with its sleeve-free, closed-deck construction, is extremely rigid and teams up with a forged crankshaft with lightweight design to unlock extremely high torque potential. The cylinder bores have a wire-arc sprayed iron coating. And the 3D-printed core for the cylinder head – another special M-specific feature – enables optimised routing of the coolant ducts that would be impossible to achieve using conventional metal casting methods.

Like the cooling system, the oil circuit is also designed to handle the particular challenges of track driving. A map-controlled oil pump ensures reliable oil supply even under extreme longitudinal and lateral acceleration.

The M TwinPower Turbo technology comprises of two mono-scroll turbochargers, each of which supplies compressed air to three cylinders. An indirect intercooler supplied by a low-temperature circuit plus specially designed compressors further enhance the turbocharger’s power output. The engine technology also includes High Precision Injection – which works at maximum pressure of 350 bar to ensure fine atomisation of fuel and therefore faster engine response – as well as VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing.

The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive develops an extra 20 hp verses the outgoing model thanks to optimised configuration of the digital engine control unit (DME). The six-cylinder in-line engine now generates maximum output of 530 hp (up from the previous 510 hp) at 6,250 rpm. The upgraded engine, which also serves as the basis for the unit powering the BMW M4 GT3, summons its peak torque of 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) between 2,750 and a now even higher 5,730 rpm. The result is even more ferocious, sustained power delivery that adds another layer of intensity to the performance experience – in particular when the driver is exploring the car’s dynamic limits on track – and enables impressive acceleration figures.

The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds, and the new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive completes the same sprint in 3.6 seconds – only a touch longer, despite its higher kerb weight. The increased output of the two all-wheel-drive models is reflected in 0 to 124 mph times that are 0.5 seconds quicker in each case - the saloon now records a time of 11.8 seconds, the Touring 12.4 seconds.

Both the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and the new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive have an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph as standard. However, if the optional M Driver’s Package is specified, this figure rises to 180 mph for the saloon and 174 mph for the Touring model, allowing drivers to utilise the full potential of the powerful engines.

Model-specific composition of engine, transmission and chassis.

The standard eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic is tuned to support the performance characteristics of the engine at hand. Drivers favouring a sporty driving style will enjoy the benefits of the standard-fit gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, which allow the driver to make spontaneous interventions in the automatic transmission’s gear selection process as and when they decide. The driving experience can be tailored even more precisely to individual tastes by adapting the shift characteristics of the transmission according to requirements and the situation at hand using the Drivelogic button.

The rear-biased setup of the intelligent all-wheel-drive system further enhances the agility of the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive. The system teams up with the Active M Differential at the rear axle – whose operation is also fully variable – to add to the signature M feeling when powering through corners. In addition to the default 4WD setting, the driver can also select 4WD Sport mode via the M Setup menu. When enabled, a higher proportion of drive power is sent to the rear wheels for even more agile handling. Switching off DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) also brings 2WD mode into play, which means power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels. This mode offers skilled drivers a pure-bred driving experience without interventions from the control systems.

The high torsional stiffness of the body structure and chassis mountings creates the ideal platform for impressive driving dynamics and instantaneous response to steering commands. As well as the bracing elements in the BMW M3 Saloon, the BMW M3 Touring has additional torsion struts in the rear. This extra strengthening measure gives the Touring body variant the tools it needs to display the combination of dynamism, agility and handling precision typically found in BMW M models.

The M-specific kinematics and elastokinematics of the double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle ensure a blend of extremely dynamic handling and finely judged comfort-focused qualities in everyday use and over longer journeys. The standard adaptive M suspension gives drivers the ability to adapt the responses of the electronically controlled dampers as they wish. Via the M Setup menu, drivers can select from three different settings to optimise the car’s handling in line with need and personal preference.

The package of chassis technology also includes M Servotronic steering and the integrated braking system, which works in conjunction with both the standard M Compound brakes and the optional M Carbon ceramic brakes. Both variants have six-piston fixed-calliper brakes at the front axle and single-piston floating-calliper brakes at the rear. As well as larger and more heat-resistant brake discs – which, thanks to their considerable ability to withstand fade, ensure uncompromising deceleration even under extreme conditions – the M Carbon ceramic brakes also stand out with their intelligent lightweight construction; they are around 14 kilograms lighter than the standard M Compound brakes. The reduction in unsprung mass plays a particularly significant role in delivering increased agility, enhanced handling, faster response and lower fuel consumption.

The M Compound system is fitted with blue brake callipers as standard, but these can also be specified in red or black as an option. The M Carbon ceramic brakes callipers have a Gold metallic painted finish. All variations feature a striking BMW M logo on the brake callipers at the front axle.

The DSC system ensures a form of driving pleasure unmatched by any rival. Indeed, with M Dynamic Mode it offers an ultra-sporty configuration that raises the system’s intervention thresholds when it comes to controlling braking inputs and delays the point at which it steps in to restrict engine output. This maximises the car’s performance dynamics with DSC switched on. The system can also be fully deactivated (DSC off).

M Traction Control function, a standard feature on both Saloon and Touring models, features slip control tech that can be adjusted through ten stages according to the driver’s preferences or the road conditions at hand. It allows the control system inputs to be reduced in stages so that the driver can approach the physical limits in race action on the track, for example. The M Laptimer and M Drift Analyser help experienced drivers improve their lap times and hone their drifting skills. The integrated application of all drivetrain and chassis systems was fine-tuned at locations including the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit, but it also ensures highly dynamic and at the same time precisely controllable handling in everyday driving.

Axle-specific wheel sizes, M forged light-alloy wheels with a new design.

All new BMW M3 model variants are fitted as standard with M forged light-alloy wheels in axle-specific rim sizes to the benefit of agility and handling. The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive feature Jetblack forged light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design, measuring 19-inches at the front axle and 20-inches at the rear axle. Plus, new forged M light-alloy wheels in 19-inch and 20-inch formats have been added to the extensive optional equipment roster for all model variants. These are now finished in the colour Silver for the first time, their bright, shiny surfaces ensuring a sporty yet also elegantly sophisticated appearance.

Extensive selection of assistance systems; M Mode button to call up personalised selection of functions.

The new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M3 Touring set new standards in their segment with their extensive range of standard and optional automated driving and parking systems. In order to provide a dynamic experience that is both appropriate for the situation at hand and fits the high-performance sports car brief, the interventions of the driver assistance systems can be adjusted using the M Mode button on the centre console. For example, in the optional TRACK setting conceived for use on race circuits, all comfort and safety systems are temporarily deactivated.

Standard specification for all model variants includes Park Distance Control with sensors at the front and rear, Cruise Control with brake function, front collision warning system with brake intervention, Lane Departure Warning including lane return with steering assistance, Speed Limit Info with no-overtaking indicator and Parking Assistant including Reversing Assistant. Among the items on the options list is Driving Assistant Professional, which adds functions such as the Steering and Lane Control Assistant with automatic Speed Limit Assist, Lane Keeping Assistant, traffic light detection and Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function.

Newly designed headlights and eye-catching details sharpen the cars’ visual character.

Newly designed LED headlights, which bring together low and high beam in a single module, bring fresh accents to the front end of the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M3 Touring. Two elegantly sculpted, subtly arrow-shaped and vertically arranged LED units in each module serve as both side lights/daytime driving lights and turn signal indicators. The focused impression created by the light sources, whose inner workings are now structured in a particularly striking design, ensures a progressive appearance which is also adopted by the slim LED rear lights with L-shaped taillights.

Adaptive LED Headlights with non-dazzling matrix high beam are available as an option, which also include the cornering light function, urban lights, and blue inlays inside the headlights, indicating the presence of this sophisticated light technology. M Shadowline lights with dark inner accents are also available for cars specified with the Adaptive LED Headlights. The model badge on the boot lid of the Competition models is now accented by an elegant silver-coloured surround.

New steering wheels and interior trim elements for the M-specific sports car cockpit.

Open the door to these new high-performance models and the stripped-back design of the interior will provide an instant hit of motor sport DNA. A new steering wheel and controls, plus sophisticated materials for the instrument panel and interior trim elements heighten the sense of exclusivity inside the M-specific sports car cockpit.

The newly designed three-spoke M leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons and red centre marker in the 12 o’clock position now has a flat-bottomed rim and precisely modified spokes. Two M buttons for selecting individually configured vehicle setups and the gearshift paddles are fitted as standard to enable rapid interventions in the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission’s gear selection process. An M Alcantara steering wheel in the same design and with the same functionality is available as an option for the first time, and a heating function is available as an option for both steering wheel variants.

The M-specific cockpit design also includes a control panel on the centre console. The Setup button and M Mode button are located here along with the gearshift lever / selector lever, the red Start/Stop button and the BMW iDrive Controller. These can be used by the driver to configure their desired vehicle setup and activate cockpit display and driver assistance system functions tailored to the driving situation at hand.

High-quality, carefully crafted materials and M-specific design features in the interior create a modern and premium ambience with sporting flair. The interior trim elements in the instrument panel, control panel and cup holder cover now come as standard in Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite, or optional M Carbon Fibre. M Carbon Fibre now additionally includes elements for the steering wheel and the gearshift paddles of the Competition models. The optional Sensatec instrument panel now has a further refined surface structure.

The standard M sport seats offer an array of electrically operated adjustment options to make it easier to find the perfect position behind the steering wheel. A memory function for the driver’s seat allows the driver to store their desired adjustment settings, while the head restraints feature illuminated model badging. Standard specification also includes seat heating for the driver and front passenger, while seat ventilation is available as an option. Available as alternatives to the standard Merino leather trim are Merino full-leather trim, BMW Individual Merino leather trim with extended features and BMW Individual Merino full-leather trim – each in a choice of four colours.

The optional M Carbon bucket seats provide an optimum, racing-car-like connection between driver and car. Fully electrically adjustable and heated, they fuse racing functionality with luxurious craftsmanship and excellent comfort over long distances. The use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the seat surface and backrest elements, plus cut-outs in the side bolsters and below the head restraints enable a weight saving of 9.6 kilograms over the standard M sport seats.

BMW Curved Display and new BMW Operating System 8.5.

The BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and the new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive also welcome the latest generation of the display and control/operation system BMW iDrive based on BMW Operating System 8.5. With the high-resolution BMW Curved Display angled towards the driver and upgraded BMW Personal Assistant, the interaction between driver and car is based squarely on operation using touch control and natural language. The fully digital screen grouping made up of a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display shows M-specific content. This includes additional information on the vehicle’s status and sharpens the driver’s focus on the road ahead. Also on the options list is the BMW Head-Up Display, which projects information relevant to driving – including a multi-coloured rpm dial, Shift Lights and M View – onto the windscreen, again in an M-specific style.

The M-specific graphics and content on the information display and control display are now joined by a new way of operating the standard-fitted automatic climate control system. The temperature and ventilation settings as well as the seat heating and – if specified – steering wheel heating can now be controlled either by touch using a special menu option in the lower area of the control display or by voice command. New adjustment controls for the air vent grilles in the centre of the instrument panel and on the driver’s and front passenger side of the cockpit allow the airflow direction to be adjusted using rotating and tilting movements.

In addition to the footwells, the storage compartment in the front section of the centre console and the door openers, the standard ambient lighting now also encompasses contour lighting integrated into the trim around the central seam vents. Nine colours in multiples grades of brightness allow customers to adjust the effect to their personal preferences. The functionality of the interior lighting also includes an atmospheric Welcome and Goodbye Animation and light signals indicating an open door or incoming phone call.

As well as the BMW Maps cloud-based navigation system, the standard-fitted BMW Live Cockpit Plus includes two USB ports for data transfer, a Wi-Fi interface and smartphone integration enabling the use of Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, while the optional telephony with wireless charging enables wireless charging of compatible smartphones. A HiFi speaker system with 10 speakers and a 205-watt amplifier is fitted as standard on both Saloon and Touring models.

Distinctive looks and higher-intensity performance with M Carbon exterior package, M Race Track package and BMW M Performance Parts.

An M Carbon exterior package specific to each of the new high-performance cars brings bespoke precision to their outward appeal. With inlays for the wide front air intakes and a rear diffuser with unique geometry for each model, plus exterior mirror caps and a rear spoiler made from CFRP for the BMW M3 Saloon, the M Carbon exterior package also brings fresh visual sharpness to the race-car character of the two models. The M Race Track package, which brings M Carbon ceramic brakes, M Carbon bucket seats for the driver and front passenger and Carbon Fibre interior trim elements, reduces vehicle weight by as much as 25 kilograms.

BMW M Performance Parts offer customers additional scope for tailoring the high-intensity driving experience and dynamic aura of the new high-performance sports cars to their personal tastes. The selection of model-specific retrofit options ranges from exterior components made from CFRP and M Performance forged wheels with centre lock to M Performance floor mats and M Performance steering wheel trim for customising the interior.

The BMW 5 Series Touring, the epitome of driving pleasure, sporty elegance and modern functionality in the premium upper mid-range segment, is entering a new era. The sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series Touring is more progressive than ever, featuring numerous digital innovations, pioneering systems for automated driving and parking, increased sustainability throughout the entire product life cycle and, for the first time, an all-electric drive in the form of the BMW i5 Touring. The new BMW 5 Series Touring is a sophisticated all-rounder for everyday driving and touring, offering stylish presence, superior sportiness, versatility and spacious comfort.

The exterior dimensions of the new BMW 5 Series Touring are slightly larger than those of its predecessor, emphasising its dynamically stretched proportions and increasing the amount of space available in both rows of seats. A flexible drive architecture allows model variants with highly efficient combustion engines, plug-in hybrid systems and purely electric drive systems to be produced on a single production line at the BMW Group's Dingolfing plant.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring will be available in four distinct trim levels in the UK, with the Sport Edition, M Sport, M Sport Pro and range-topping BMW i5 M60 models each providing a compelling offering unique to the segment. As one of the most important sales regions for the new BMW 5 Series Touring, the UK will be one of the first markets to launch the all-electric model in May 2024, with the plug-in hybrid offering coming later in the year.

Priced from £61,705, the first BMW 5 Series Touring customer deliveries in the UK will commence from 25 May 2024.

Stretched proportions, strong front, individual rear.
Dynamically stretched proportions and generously designed surfaces characterise the exterior of the new BMW 5 Series Touring. Compared to its predecessor, the new BMW 5 Series Touring is 97 millimetres longer (5,060 millimetres), 32 millimetres wider (1,900 millimetres) and 17 millimetres higher (1,515 millimetres). The new BMW 5 Series Touring has the longest wheelbase in its class, increasing by 20 millimetres to 2,995 millimetres.

The distinctive front end features a modern interpretation of the hallmark twin headlights and BMW grille. Two almost vertical LED elements serve as direction indicators and daytime running lights respectively. The BMW grille, which projects far forward, is available with BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting on the M Sport Pro model. In the side view, the flat window graphics and the long roof spoiler emphasise the sporty, elegant 2-box design. Powerfully sculpted rear wheel arches, together with the flat rear window, emphasise the car's wide stature. An L-shaped chrome bar divides the LED rear light elements, which extend well into the side sections.

Sport Edition available to order on both Saloon and Touring models in the UK. 
In the UK, the market launch of the BMW 5 Series Touring will also see the introduction of a Sport Edition across both the Saloon and Touring models. This new derivative provides an entry point into the BMW i5 range, which continues to boast a high-level of specification, with 19” light alloy wheels and Phytonic Blue Metallic paint as standard, alongside the comfort and sportiness expected of any BMW 5 Series model. The new edition offers unique exterior styling highlights, featuring satinated aluminium finishes, M Anthracite Headliner and Sun Protection Glass. The modern interior of the new model is finished to a high standard with a Veganza two-spoke steering wheel alongside the state-of-the-art Interaction Bar and Harmon Kardon sound system. Furthermore, the BMW i5 eDrive40 Sport edition is equipped with AC Professional Charging, allowing up to 22kW charging as standard.

High Level of Standard Equipment across the range: M Sport, M Sport Pro and i5 M60
The new BMW 5 Series Touring in M Sport trim includes a high level of equipment as standard, with a range of options also available to personalise the new model for the driver’s needs. The all-electric and the plug-in hybrid models come with 19-inch light alloy wheels as standard, with up to 21-inch alloy wheels are available as an option. The new BMW 5 Series Touring has vegan upholstery as standard and features Veganza seat surfaces with decorative perforation. Also included with the M Sport models as standard are horizontal slats and M logo, high-gloss black exterior mirror caps and 19-inch M light alloy wheels ensure a particularly striking appearance.

The dynamic character of the new BMW 5 Series Touring can be further emphasised through the M Sport Pro Model, which includes a M Rear spoiler, M high-gloss Shadowline and high-gloss black BMW Kidney Grille with Iconic Glow. Additionally, the M Sport Pro Model comes as standard with 20” M light alloy wheels and M Sport brakes in red high-gloss. Further optional equipment includes BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery in several bi-colour variants and the panoramic glass roof.

As the top model in the series, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring (combined power consumption: 20.8 - 18.3 kWh/62 miles according to WLTP) comes as standard with exterior components that clearly express its outstanding driving dynamics. A Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, with up to 18 loudspeakers, is fitted as standard on the BMW i5 M60, and can be added as option to the other BMW 5 Series Touring models. The performance model also comes with 20” M aerodynamic wheels and Adaptive suspension Professional as standard.

Optimised functionality for everyday use, leisure and travel.
The new BMW 5 Series Touring offers more space and noticeably more leg, shoulder and elbow room, especially in the rear, as well as optimised acoustic comfort. With its versatile interior and numerous intelligent functions, the new BMW 5 Series Touring is just as impressive on the road as it is in everyday use.

A wider luggage compartment opening combined with a low sill makes it easy to stow large items of luggage. Regardless of their drive technology, all variants of the new BMW 5 Series Touring have a luggage compartment volume that can be expanded from 570 to up to 1,700 litres. In addition to the automatic tailgate operation, remote unlocking of the 40:20:40 split rear seat backrest from the luggage compartment is also standard. Storage compartments under the load compartment floor provide space for the luggage compartment partition net, luggage compartment cover and charging cable for the all-electric and plug-in hybrid models.

All-electric BMW i5 Touring available in two variants from the start.
The new BMW i5 Touring is the first all-electric premium model in its competitive field. It will be available in two versions from the outset. In the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring, two highly integrated drive units on the front and rear axles together form an electric all-wheel drive with up to 601 hp. With M Launch Control or M Sport Boost activated, the system torque is increased to 820 Nm (605 ft-lb). The top model accelerates from a standstill to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds and its top speed is electronically limited to 143 mph. The electric motor of the BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring is located on the rear axle (combined power consumption according to WLTP: 19.3 to 16.5 kWh/62 miles) and generates a maximum output of 340 hp and a maximum torque of up to 430 Nm (317 ft-lb) with Sport Boost or Launch Control function. The BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 6.1 seconds.

In both models, the high-voltage battery located in the underbody provides a usable energy content of 81.2 kWh. In addition to the efficient electric motors, adaptive recuperation and heat pump technology for heating and cooling the interior, drive and high-voltage battery contribute to the long-distance capability of the BMW i5 Touring. The range determined in the WLTP test procedure is 277 to 314 miles for the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring and 300 to 348 miles for the BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring.

Innovative charging solutions from BMW Charging.
The battery can be charged with alternating current with an output of up to 22 kW as standard on both the Sport model and BMW i5 M60. This is available as an option on all other models. The high-voltage battery can be charged with direct current with a power of up to 205 kW. Anticipatory thermal management for the high-voltage battery optimises efficiency when using fast-charging stations. Connected Home Charging for the all-electric and plug-in hybrid models creates the conditions for solar and load-optimised as well as cost-optimised charging. The BMW i5 Touring is also suitable for the Plug & Charge Multi Contract function.

The ideal balance between sportiness and travelling comfort.
Driving pleasure in the new BMW 5 Series Touring is based on an ideal balance between sportiness and travelling comfort. With the longest wheelbase in the competitive segment, large track widths, an almost perfectly balanced 50:50 axle load distribution, intelligent lightweight construction and optimised rigidity of the body-chassis connection, it offers the ideal conditions for this. The extensively enhanced suspension technology includes sport steering, directly controlled wheel slip limitation and the latest version of the integrated braking system as standard. The BMW i5 Touring and the plug-in hybrid models also feature rear-axle air suspension including automatic self-levelling.

An M Sport Suspension, an M sport braking system and the Adaptive Chassis Professional (standard in the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring) with electronically controlled shock absorbers, Integral Active Steering and new lateral dynamics management are available as optional equipment. The Adaptive M Chassis Professional with Active Roll Stabilisation and Active Roll Comfort is also available for the top model.

Innovative systems for automated driving and parking.
The systems for semi-automated driving and parking available as standard or as an option for the new BMW 5 Series Touring set standards in the competitive environment with their range of functions, reliability and everyday benefits. The highlight of the range is the optional Driving Assistant Professional including Steering and Lane Control Assist and Distance Control with Stop & Go function. In the US, Canada and Germany, the Highway Assistant is available, which relieves the driver of steering tasks on highways with structurally separated directional lanes. At driving speeds of up to 85 mph it is possible to take your hands off the steering wheel and position them comfortably as long as you keep a close eye on the traffic. The system also includes the unique Active Lane Change Assistant with eye activation.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring features the Parking Assistant including start monitoring, Trailer Assistant and Reversing Assist Camera as standard. With the optional Parking Assistant Professional, automated parking and manoeuvring up to 200 metres can be controlled from outside the car using a smartphone.

Progressively designed cockpit
At the heart of the progressive, driver-oriented cockpit design is the BMW Curved Display. Its 12.3-inch Information Display and the Control Display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches form a fully digital display network. The modern premium ambience in the interior is further enhanced by the new sports seats fitted as standard, the steering wheel, which is now flatter at the bottom, and the BMW Interaction Bar.

BMW iDrive with "QuickSelect", video streaming, AirConsole games.
The enhanced BMW iDrive display and operating system based on BMW Operating System 8.5 offers a redesigned home screen and the "QuickSelect" quick access function. The combination of the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is consistently designed for touchscreen and natural language operation. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus includes the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps. The BMW Live Cockpit Professional option includes the BMW Head-Up Display and an augmented view on the Control Display or the instrument cluster.

The infotainment system in the new BMW 5 Series Touring is complemented by a range of attractive digital services. The Connected Package Professional offers a choice of YouTube and the Video app with international and country-specific content for streaming video on the Control Display. The new BMW iDrive also enables the use of an innovative form of in-car gaming with the AirConsole platform.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring is equipped with two 5G mobile phone antennas as standard and four as an option. This ensures optimum reception for telephony and online services. The standard equipment also includes optimised smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. The standard Personal eSIM fully integrates the vehicle into the customer's digital ecosystem. With the Remote Software Upgrades function, the new BMW 5 Series Touring always stays up to date with the latest software. It is also possible to test and rebook selected functions in the BMW ConnectedDrive Store.

Munich. The prototypes are carefully disguised, but they cannot conceal their character as high-performance cars. The future generation of the BMW M5 has entered the practical phase of its series development process. The new high-performance sedan from BMW M GmbH is now completing its test drives on public roads, BMW Group proving grounds and racetracks around the world.

Moreover, fans of the BMW M brand can look forward to a further result of the product offensive that will continue into the year 2024. BMW M GmbH has now officially confirmed that with the new edition of the BMW M5, it will be adding a Touring variant to its model range. The perfect symbiosis of M-typical performance, uncompromising long-distance comfort and impressive spaciousness will experience a renaissance in 2024 with the new BMW M5 Touring.

Just like the future BMW M5 Sedan, the Touring variant will also feature a completely newly developed partially electrified drive system. Its M-typical performance characteristics as well as the precisely tuned chassis technology refined with innovative systems facilitate driving dynamics and agility at a level unique in this vehicle class. Thus, BMW M GmbH is steadily progressing on its path to electrification. "We are now also installing a hybrid drive system with typical M performance in other high-performance cars," says Dirk Häcker, Head of Development at BMW M GmbH.

For almost 40 years now, the BMW M5 has been the benchmark for driving dynamics, agility and precision in the high-performance sedan segment. Evolutionary progress, development know-how from racing and pioneering innovations in the areas of drive, suspension, aerodynamics and lightweight construction have shaped the history of the BMW M5. Engines with six, eight and ten cylinders, M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving characteristics, the compound brake system with M Carbon ceramic brakes and M xDrive four-wheel drive are just some of the technological milestones with which this model has repeatedly redefined top performance in a sedan that is unconditionally suitable for everyday use. The seventh generation of the BMW M5 takes up on this – with fascinating innovations for an even more intense performance experience.

The first BMW M5 Touring was launched back in 1992 based on the second-generation BMW M5 Sedan and has since stood for a combination of high performance and everyday practicality on four wheels. In 2007, BMW M GmbH also added a Touring variant to the fourth-generation BMW M5. And currently, the successful launch of the first BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive* also underscores the high appeal of this special vehicle concept in the premium midrange segment of high-performance cars.

Testing of the first prototypes of the new BMW M5 Touring is to commence in the next few days in urban traffic as well as on country roads and motorways around Munich and at the BMW M GmbH headquarters in Garching. The integrated application of all drive and suspension systems will then also be carried out for the new BMW M5 Touring on the Nürburgring's Nordschleife, among other places, with the aim of ensuring the ideal balance of sporting performance on the racetrack and superior ride comfort in everyday driving and over long distances.

A refreshed exterior, an extensively modernised cabin and the latest advances in digitalisation and equipment ensure the new BMW 3 Series has all the tools necessary to continue its worldwide success story.

With a history of more than 45 years, the BMW 3 Series represents the core of the BMW brand. Since the original BMW 3 Series of 1975, more than 16 million units have been sold, with over 1.1 million customers since 2019 alone. In 2021 the BMW 3 Series was the market leader in its class in the UK, Germany and China, and accounts for around 14 per cent of the brand’s vehicle sales worldwide.

For the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and BMW 3 Series Touring, a newly designed cockpit with BMW Curved Display and the latest-generation BMW Operating System 8 bring ground-breaking modernity and digitalisation to the interior. All variants of the new BMW 3 Series now come as standard with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with gearshift paddles on the steering wheel and a newly designed selector lever.

Offered in a choice of Sport and M Sport specification in the UK, additions to the standard equipment increase the appeal of the new BMW 3 Series, while a restructured optional equipment line-up makes it easier for customers to individualise their car according to their preferences.

The new BMW 3 Series is available with a choice of four petrol engines, including one plug-in hybrid variant, and two diesel engines, both with mild-hybrid technology. At the top of each model line-up sits a pair of BMW Performance models from BMW M GmbH, meaning the new BMW 3 Series can be ordered with outputs from 184hp to 374hp. BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive comes as standard on the range-topping models, and is an option on selected variants.

Intelligent lightweight design, optimised aerodynamic attributes

The body structure of the BMW 3 Series combines a high level of solidity with minimised weight. As well as the bonnet and front side panels, the engine subframe, front spring struts and numerous other suspension components are made from aluminium.

Optimising the car’s aerodynamics has benefits for both efficiency and driving performance. An almost completely sealed underbody, aerodynamically optimised wheels, the use of air curtains at the front of the car, and latest-generation active air flap control for both the BMW kidney grille and the lower air intake result in exceptionally low drag.

BMW kidney grille and headlights redesigned

The revised front apron adds to the sporty appearance of the new BMW 3 Series. The standard full-LED headlights are now much slimmer, with clear contours and daytime driving lights arranged in an inverted L shape. The outer daytime driving lights serve as turn indicators. Adaptive LED Headlights are available as an option, and are identifiable by the blue strip around the daytime driving lights and a matching blue accent on the upper edge of the glass cover. Blue light effects below the headlight units also give the front end a striking appearance at night. The Adaptive LED Headlights’ range of functions includes the cornering light and non-dazzling matrix high beam as well as dynamic headlight range control and variable light distribution. The latter includes the urban lights with their particularly broad illumination of the roadside; motorway beam pattern with increased low beam range; and bad weather light, which illuminates the road according to the conditions and also functions as fog lights.

The modified contours and new double bars give the BMW kidney grille a more powerful look, while air intakes in Black high-gloss below the grille cool the braking system.

Powerful proportions and clearly structured surfaces at the rear

The new contours of the front and rear aprons add a striking flourish. Horizontal lines, slim light units, clearly structured surfaces and flared wheel arches accentuate the width and muscular stance. The powerful proportions exude clear sporting intent when viewed from this angle. A higher proportion of surfaces painted in the body colour and a clean-cut design lend the rear apron of the new BMW 3 Series a particularly sophisticated look.

The standard specification for all BMW 3 Series models now includes 17-inch light-alloy wheels. The M Sport model includes 18-inch light-alloy wheels as standard, while the BMW Performance models produced by BMW M GmbH feature a 19-inch light-alloy design. The range of exterior colours has been expanded to include Skyscraper Grey metallic and Brooklyn Grey metallic for M Sport models. The BMW Individual Frozen Pure Grey metallic and Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic special paint finishes have also been added to the range. The selection of around 150 additional BMW Individual special paint finishes is class leading.

M Sport model with new design featuresz

Chrome accents highlight the double bars on the BMW kidney grille on M Sport models, with a large central air intake that features hexagonal contours and a honeycomb pattern. Deeply recessed air curtains at the outer edges of the front end accentuate its width. On the M-specific rear apron, vertical reflectors at the outer edges and a large diffuser signal the car’s sporting instincts. M Sport models feature M Sport suspension (except plug-in hybrid variants) including variable sport steering (except plug-in hybrid variants) and newly designed 18-inch M light-alloy wheels with mixed tyres. The M Sport trim also includes bespoke interior touches, such as an anthracite-coloured headliner, M leather steering wheel, M-specific upholstery and interior trim finishers in the new Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite finish.

The M Sport Pro Pack has had some enhancements. Available only on M Sport models, this package includes now includes sprint mode as well as extended M High-gloss Shadowline trim that brings a Black kidney grille surround and tailpipes in Black Chrome, as well as M lights Shadowline, an M Sport braking system with red callipers bearing the M logo, a black M rear spoiler for the Saloon models, and seat belts with contrast stitching in the colours of BMW M GmbH.

Distinctive appearance for the BMW Performance models produced by BMW M GmbH

M-specific exterior features such as large air intakes and aerodynamically optimised details make the BMW Performance models in the new BMW 3 Series range even more dynamic. The BMW M340i xDrive and BMW M340d xDrive feature a mesh-design BMW kidney grille, exclusive 19-inch M light-alloy wheels, trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes and new M exterior mirror caps in Black high-gloss. The Saloon versions also feature a Black Sapphire M rear spoiler. Adaptive LED Headlights with blue accents also come as standard on both models.

Fully digital BMW Curved Display with intuitive touch control

The interior of the new BMW 3 Series has been treated to a comprehensive update, embodied by the large BMW Curved Display. A 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and a 14.9-inch control display merge into a single fully digital unit.

The central air vents positioned below the control display are now slimmer and more modern in design, with three-zone automatic climate control as standard, adjusted using voice or touch on the control display.

The control panel on the centre console of the new BMW 3 Series has additional touch-controlled surfaces, with the Start/Stop button, iDrive Controller, Driving Experience Control buttons, parking brake and other vehicle functions.

All new BMW 3 Series models come as standard with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, and all include the newly designed selector lever on the centre console. Gearshift paddles on the steering wheel also feature as standard.

Extensive additions to standard specification

Other new additions to standard specification for the new BMW 3 Series include an automatically dimming rear-view mirror and Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors at the front and rear. Plus, all models now also come with the BMW Live Cockpit Plus including BMW Maps navigation system.

Among the outstanding individual options are the Harman Kardon surround sound system and an electrically operated glass roof for the Saloon and panoramic glass sunroof for the Touring model. A carbon-fibre roof can be ordered exclusively for the BMW M340i xDrive Saloon and BMW M340d xDrive Saloon.

BMW 330i: four-cylinder petrol engine with integrated exhaust manifold

A comprehensive round of updates for BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology has brought improvements in power delivery for the most powerful of the four-cylinder petrol engines available for the new BMW 3 Series. With an exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head and an upgraded turbocharger system, it achieves highly effective exhaust gas cooling. The latest version of the 2.0-litre engine fitted in the BMW 330i develops 258hp between 5,000 and 6,500rpm. Peak torque of 400Nm is on tap between 1,550 and 4,400rpm.

48V mild hybrid technology for BMW 320d and BMW M340d

Mild hybrid technology gives the four-cylinder BMW 320d and six-cylinder BMW M340d exceptionally responsive power delivery and optimised efficiency. A 48V starter-generator acts likes an electric drive unit to assist the engine, while also offering an electric boost effect that can instantly deliver an extra 11hp when accelerating off the line.

The mild hybrid system collects power through Brake Energy Regeneration and stores it in an additional battery. This is used not only to provide the engine with its electric power boost, but also to supply power to the vehicle’s 12V electrical system.

Eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission now standard on all models

Gearshift paddles are included with the now standard eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, which stands out with its sharp shift dynamics, Launch Control function, and ultra-quick bursts of mid-range power via its Sprint function.

BMW xDrive is standard on the range-topping BMW M340i and BMW M340d models and optionally available on the BMW 320d, BMW 320i and BMW 330e, offering intelligent all-wheel drive which ensures optimal transmission of power to all four wheels.

Intelligent technology for automated driving and parking

When it comes to breadth of functionality and availability, the automated driving and parking systems are among the best on the market. They assist the driver and ease their workload in myriad situations. Camera images and the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar sensors are used to monitor the area around the car, warn the driver of possible dangers, minimise the risk of an accident, and carry out automated parking manoeuvres.

The standard Park Distance Control features sensors at both ends of the car. It also includes Front Collision Warning with brake intervention, which detects the presence of cyclists, vehicles and pedestrians, as well as the Speed Limit Display with no-overtaking indicator (including Manual Speed Limit Assist), plus Lane Departure Warning with lane return.

Level 2 automated driving: Driving Assistant Professional

The new BMW 3 Series has Cruise Control with brake function as standard. Even greater assistance is provided by the Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, part of the optional Driving Assistant Professional. As well as keeping to the desired speed (between 19 – 130mph) it also maintains a safe distance from vehicles travelling ahead. Automatic Speed Limit Assist factors in upcoming speed restrictions detected by the Speed Limit Info system or using data from the navigation system. In addition, the route monitoring function adapts the car’s speed to the situation at hand – e.g. through corners or approaching a roundabout.

Steering and Lane Control Assistant, meanwhile, helps the driver maintain their position on motorways where the lane narrows. The Active Navigation function detects when a lane change for a motorway exit is required and prepares to steer the car into that lane. The system also comprises Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection and the Evasion Assistant.

Providing the help required with parking and manoeuvring

Parking Assistant is included as standard on the new BMW 3 Series, and helps the driver to select and park in spaces either parallel or perpendicular to the road. When entering or exiting a space, this system carries out the necessary steering inputs as well as the required acceleration, braking and gear changes with the Steptronic transmission. Also included are the Reversing Assist Camera, Lateral Parking Aid, Active PDC function which uses brake inputs to reduce the risk of collisions, and Reversing Assistant, which reverses the car for distances of up to 50 metres along the same line it took when moving forward.

Park View, Panorama View and 3D View functions contained in the optional Parking Assistant Plus provide the driver with additional visual assistance. In addition, the driver can use the Remote 3D View function to view a live image of their car and its surroundings on their smartphone. The optional BMW Drive Recorder uses the driver assistance cameras to video the area around the car, to be played back later or exported using the USB interface.

The new BMW Operating System 8 and innovative digital services

The new BMW Operating System 8 offers many more options for drivers to enjoy intuitive control of vehicle, navigation, infotainment and communication functions. As evidenced by the BMW Curved Display and the continually expanding capabilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, it is geared squarely towards dialogue using touch and natural speech.

Standard in the new BMW 3 Series: BMW Live Cockpit Plus

The BMW Live Cockpit Plus fitted as standard in the new BMW 3 Series includes the cloud-based BMW Maps, with dynamic route calculation based on real-time traffic data. The arrival time is calculated using an anticipatory method to factor in typical traffic levels. With Connected Parking, BMW Maps is also able to provide assistance when searching for a parking space close to the destination. In the plug-in hybrid models, the system also works out a charge-optimised route and provides information on public charging stations both during the journey and at the destination.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with new skills

The BMW Operating System 8 also sees the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant gain new skills. Naturally formulated spoken instructions can now be used to adjust the air conditioning and open or close a window or the optional panoramic glass sunroof, while driver assistance systems can also now be controlled by voice command. When the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is in use, new graphics appear in the display which emphasise the system’s interactive character. The graphic appears in the right place to engage with the person speaking, visualising how the system is listening attentively.

Personalisation with the BMW ID

In the new BMW 3 Series, customers benefit from a personalised experience thanks to their BMW ID. Even more personalised settings can now be transferred between vehicles. When signing in to a vehicle for the first time, scanning a QR code is all it takes to create a new BMW ID on a smartphone. If the user already has the My BMW App and a BMW ID, this will be automatically imported into the car via the app. The driver will then receive a personal greeting while settings for seat position, exterior mirrors, navigation system, driver assistance functions, display layouts, shortcuts, favourites and infotainment settings will be imported automatically. Personalised suggestions from the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant are also stored in the BMW ID, together with individually selected wake words and privacy settings.

My BMW App: universal digital interface between driver and vehicle

The My BMW App acts as a universal digital interface, enabling remote vehicle locating, locking and unlocking the doors, monitoring the car’s immediate vicinity (Remote 3D View), and sending destination addresses to the vehicle’s navigation system. Plug-in hybrid BMW 3 Series owners can also charge the battery of their cars remotely via the My BMW App, allowing the user to set their desired charging window and the charge level they wish to achieve. The charging process can be started or interrupted at any time.

Smartphone connectivity and integration of third-party services

BMW Live Cockpit Plus brings optimised smartphone integration using Apple CarPlay® or Android Auto™. This allows customers to use a host of digital services such as Siri, Google Assistant and various third-party apps, with content integrated via a wireless connection.

Always up to the minute: BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades for over-the-air updates

The BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades function keeps the new BMW 3 Series up to date with the latest software, with upgrades ranging from new services to improved vehicle functions. Customers can use the BMW ConnectedDrive Store to purchase additional functions at any time such as Drive Recorder, Remote Engine Start function, High-beam Assistant, IconicSounds Sport and the Traffic Cam.

BMW M Performance Parts

The BMW M Performance Parts range offers more ways to bring greater dynamism to the new BMW 3 Series. Model-specific exterior components such as the M Performance carbon-fibre rear diffuser, the M Performance carbon-fibre rear wing for the Saloon and the M Performance rear spoiler ensure authentic motor sport looks. The BMW M Performance Parts light-alloy wheels give the new BMW 3 Series a distinctive appearance, and can be specified in up to 20-inch format – a wheel size not available from the factory.

Sustainability throughout the value cycle

The progressive character of the BMW 3 Series is reflected in its optimised sustainability that covers the whole of the value chain from raw materials and production through the use phase and recycling. Secondary raw materials account for around 50 percent of that used in the aluminium castings for the BMW 3 Series, while around 16 percent of all thermoplastics are recycled. Electricity from renewable sources is used in production of the new BMW 3 Series at BMW Group Plant Munich. Green power is sourced from hydroelectric plants in the region, while production at the other manufacturing locations is also carbon neutral.

The new BMW 5 Series reaffirms its leading position in the premium executive class thanks to a new look, an interior brimming with refinements, cutting-edge innovations and even greater efficiencies, as most models now feature mild-hybrid technology.

Like the new BMW 5 Series Saloon, the new BMW 5 Series Touring will also be available with a plug-in hybrid drive system from November 2020. The use of mild hybrid technology with a 48V starter-generator will be rolled out to all models with a four- or six-cylinder engine, except PHEV and M550i xDrive models.

Inside, new interior features include a larger 12.3” Central Information Display powered by the latest Operating System 7.0, including BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant and Smartphone Integration. The new 5 Series also benefits from the latest camera- and radar-based driving assistant systems, including features like steering and lane-control assistant and active cruise control to name just a few.

More than 600,000 units of the BMW 5 Series Saloon and Touring have been sold worldwide since the current generation was launched. The market introduction of the new BMW 5 Series is in July 2020 and both models will be produced at BMW Plant Dingolfing in Bavaria. The new BMW 5 Series Saloon will also be built by our production partner Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria.

Exterior design

The exterior design of the BMW 5 Series features precise modifications to heighten the car’s distinctive presence and sporting style.

The BMW kidney grille has extra width and height, dropping down further into the front apron and framed by a single-piece surround. The slimmer contouring of the headlights brings a modern twist to the focused look so familiar from BMWs past and present. The standard full LED headlights include two U-shaped daytime driving lights to create a precise and modern light graphic. With the Visibility pack, customers can upgrade to either Adaptive LED headlights with matrix technology or BMW Laserlights including High-beam Assistant – these headlight upgrades are characterised by two L-shaped daytime driving lights. The latest generation of BMW’s Laserlight technology increases the lighting range up to 600 metres and includes a blue laser effect within the eye-brow. On both Adaptive LED and Laserlight upgrades, customers can select the optional ‘BMW Individual Lights Shadow Line’ for an even sportier front profile aesthetic. The front apron of both SE and M Sport trim levels have also been redesigned with larger and more pronounced air inlets.

The LED taillights are now presented with an additional top overhang that transforms the L-motif into a C-shape. Blackened lenses frame the taillights for a more slender, high-tech look, with bold, stepped contours providing a modernised appearance. The rear apron has also been redesigned with trapezoidal tailpipe finishers and a sportier mounted diffuser on Saloon models.

M Sport package features new 19” and 20” Wheels whilst the new limited M Sport Edition comes with exclusive Individual metallic paint and unique 20” Air Performance wheels.

The M Sport package delivers a sportier look from both the front and rear profiles of the car. Typical of our most popular trim level, these models include the M aerodynamics package, M Sport steering wheel and all new 19” and 20” M Sport alloy wheels. A new M Sport Edition version will be available from launch in a limited worldwide production run of 1,000 units. Its exclusive specification includes the M Sport package, model-specific 20” Air Performance Wheels and a choice of two exclusive exterior paints including Donington Grey and Tanzanite Blue.

Interior: 12.3-inch Central Information Display

The Central Information Display has increased in size from 10.25” to 12.3” and is powered by BMW’s latest Operating System 7.0.

Trim levels
The new BMW 5 Series comes in a choice of three trim levels: SE, M Sport and M Sport Edition. For the very first time in the UK, we’ll also be introducing a range-topping M Performance M550i xDrive on Saloon models.

Standard features of the SE include a choice of 17”, 18” and 19” alloy wheels and Steptronic or Steptronic Sport transmission depending on the engine variant. The interior benefits from Dakota leather upholstery, Oxide Silver dark matt trim, Sport leather steering wheel and heated front seats. The SE Touring specification includes split folding rear seats and matt silver roof rails, with all body styles also having an electronic tailgate.

New for the SE are folding mirrors, front electric lumbar support and Parking Assistant. Comfort, convenience and connectivity are heightened with automatic air conditioning, DAB radio, Connected Package Professional and BMW Live Cockpit Professional.

The M Sport trim level adds new alloy wheel designs in 18”, 19” and 20”sizes, the M aerodynamics package and high gloss shadowline exterior trim, which now extends to the roof rails on the Touring. Inside, there is the M leather steering wheel, front sports seats, a distinctive instrument panel finished in Sensatec, anthracite headliner and Aluminium Rhombicle Grey trim details. M Sport suspension is standard except on 530e and 530e xDrive models.

Building on the M Sport, the M Sport Edition boasts exterior and interior enhancements. Finished in either Tanzanite Blue or exclusive Donington Grey, the M Sport Edition features 20-inch alloy wheels fitted with runflat tyres, shadowline adaptive LED headlights, all-new red M brake callipers, extended high-gloss shadowline exterior trim and sun protection glass. The M Sport Edition specification also includes an M rear spoiler and M multifunction seats on the Saloon model.

The range-topping M550i XDrive Saloon is  distinguished from the core 5 Series models with a 4.4 litre V8 TwinPower turbocharged powertrain, exclusive 20” wheels, cerium grey exterior detailing, Harman/Kardon Surround Sound System, an M Sport differential and adaptive M suspension.

Engines

A choice of plug-in hybrid models with the latest fourth-generation battery technology including an all new six-cylinder 545e xDrive Saloon and four-cylinder 530e sDrive/xDrive Touring from November 2020.

From November 2020, the latest-generation BMW eDrive technology will be combined with a four-cylinder petrol engine on the new BMW 530e Saloon and - for the very first time – the BMW 530e Touring.

5 Series Touring –

48V mild-hybrid technology for all four- and six-cylinder models

Mild-hybrid technology, first introduced in the BMW 520d and BMW 520d xDrive models in autumn 2019, will now offer enhanced performance combined with lower fuel consumption and improved driving comfort in all four- and six-cylinder variants of the new BMW 5 Series. Fitting a powerful 48V starter-generator and a second battery enables a significant increase in the amount of brake energy that can be regenerated and stored. This energy is used not just to supply the electrical system, but also to lighten the combustion engine’s workload and boost its power.

The starter-generator produces an electric boost that instantly makes an additional 8 kW/11 hp available, enhancing overtaking and off-the-line acceleration. The starter-generator also increases efficiency by assisting the engine when driving at constant speeds and improves comfort when the Auto Start-Stop and coasting functions are in use.

Further developed powertrain and chassis technology

Alongside the 530hp V8 found in the range-topping BMW M550i xDrive Saloon, the new BMW 5 Series comes with a choice of three additional petrol and three diesel engines producing between 184hp and 340hp. The direct injection system in the petrol units operates at increased pressure, meaning greater efficiency, while the two-stage turbocharging technology now fitted in all diesel variants makes for even sharper power delivery. All the engines are complemented with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard. BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive is also offered on select variants including the 520d, 530d, 530e, 540i, 545e and M550i models.

There is a choice of sophisticated chassis systems designed to enhance either agility and dynamism or driving comfort. M Sport suspension, Adaptive M suspension and Adaptive M suspension Professional including active roll-stabilisation can all be found on the options list. Red M callipers are now available as an alternative to blue with the M Sport Pro pack on M Sport models and are standard on M550i xDrive Saloon models.

Driver assistance systems offering additional functions

The driver assistance systems available for the new BMW 5 Series serve both to enhance driving comfort on long journeys and increase safety in situations where the driver does not have a clear view. As part of Driving Assistant Professional, updates to Steering and Lane Control Assistants are included, which in turn introduces Active Navigation. This system uses navigation data to spot in advance when a lane change will be required, and this can then be performed simply in advance notice, using the Lane Change Assistant. 

The newly standard Parking Assistant’s range of functions has been extended with the addition of the reversing assistant, which takes control of the steering while reversing for distances of up to 50 metres.

The new Drive Recorder option coupled with Parking Assistant Plus, uses in-built cameras to record video footage from different points around the vehicle, before storing the recordings so they can be either watched later on the control display or exported via the USB port.

Recordings can be up to 40 seconds in length, comprising the 20 seconds of video saved immediately prior to the Drive Recorder being activated and the next 20 seconds. In the event of a collision, the 20 seconds up to the moment of impact and the next 20 seconds are automatically recorded and saved.  

New digital services: BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, Smartphone Integration and Remote Software Upgrade

The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional brings in the latest BMW Operating System 7.0 and a host of digital services as standard.  

The new BMW 5 Series includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with the latest extended functionality. This technology learns routines, habits and preferences to help the driver get the best out of the in-car functionality. Smartphone Integration is offered as standard, without any runtime limitations, and is now compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Offered for the first time on the new BMW 5 Series the Remote Software Upgrade functionality keeps the vehicle up to date with the latest software. All updates can be imported over the air, either on a smartphone via BMW Connected or directly into the car using its built-in SIM card. Installation is much like a smartphone update. The content of the upgrades can vary, from new software services to improved vehicle functions and the possibility to purchase additional technology via the BMW ConnectedDrive online store.

Munich. Two extremely efficient high-performance models are joining the BMW M line-up in the premium midsize segment. The six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology fitted in the BMW M340d xDrive Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 5.7 – 5.3 l/100 km [49.6 – 53.3 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 149 – 139 g/km) and BMW M340d xDrive Touring (fuel consumption combined: 5.8 – 5.4 l/100 km [48.7 – 52.3 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 153 – 143 g/km) produces exceptional pulling power while attaining similarly impressive levels of efficiency. The 3.0-litre unit generates maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp and peak torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft). The inclusion of 48V mild hybrid technology, meanwhile, has led to a further reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. Thanks to their comprehensive arsenal of exhaust gas treatment technologies, including an SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue injection, the most powerful diesel variants of the new BMW 3 Series also comply with the future Euro 6d emissions standard.

The arrival of the new BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and BMW M340d xDrive Touring in April 2020 bring that inimitable M feeling to a diesel-fuelled BMW 3 Series for the first time. The potent engine in the new BMW M models teams up with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, bespoke chassis technology and intelligent all-wheel drive. M Sport suspension – including variable sport steering – and M Sport brakes are fitted as standard on both models, likewise the M Sport differential. M-specific exterior features with optimised aerodynamic properties are part of an overall package that leaves no stone unturned in the provision of supreme performance. The new BMW M340d xDrive Sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.6 seconds, while the new BMW M340d xDrive Touring completes the same sprint in 4.8 seconds. The combination of pulsating driving characteristics and a cockpit focusing squarely on the enjoyment of intense driving pleasure guarantees an enthralling experience of high performance at work.

Exceptional power delivery meets exemplary efficiency: the six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and 250 kW/340 hp.

The new M models in the BMW 3 Series line-up owe their unmistakable character in no small part to outstanding power delivery coupled with rock-bottom fuel consumption and emissions given the performance at hand. Their 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line diesel engine features a crankcase and cylinder head both made from aluminium. Frictional losses in the base engine are reduced by measures including a wire-arc sprayed steel coating for the cylinder bores.

The power unit’s BMW TwinPower Turbo technology comprises a two-stage turbocharging system with optimised thermodynamics and direct charge air cooling, along with common-rail direct injection using piezo injectors. To ensure exceptionally sharp turbocharger response, the system’s high-pressure and low-pressure stages both feature variable turbine geometry. The further developed direct injection system, whose injectors now operate at a maximum 2,700 bar, ensures a precisely metered supply of fuel and extremely clean combustion. Integral pressure sensors enable up to ten injections per stoke. Engine response and efficiency also benefit from an intake system with optimised air routing, whose upgraded design enhances the power unit’s acoustics as well. Extensive engine encapsulation measures ensure the straight-six is particularly easy on the ears – and at the same time helps to optimise warm-up behaviour. Specially developed for the new BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and BMW M340d xDrive Touring, the diesel unit’s peak torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) is on stream from just 1,750 rpm, while maximum output of 250 kW/340 hp arrives at 4,400 rpm.

Mild hybrid technology with a 48V starter-generator increases dynamism and efficiency.

The inclusion of mild hybrid technology allows the engine to build power with an even greater sense of urgency. The 48V starter-generator fitted in the new BMW M models creates an electric boost effect that instantly puts an additional 8 kW/11 hp on tap. This extra input augments power delivery under hard acceleration and increases efficiency at regular speeds. The electrical power required here is stored in a 48V battery that is charged by recuperating energy under braking or on the overrun. Plus, additional energy can be supplied to the 48V battery by raising the engine’s load point.

The power generated in this way assists the engine when travelling at a constant speed, too, meaning it can operate within an efficiency-optimised load range as often as possible. As a result, there are fewer spikes in fuel consumption. The mild hybrid technology has the additional benefit of improving the operation of the Auto Start Stop and coasting functions. The 48V generator allows the engine to be deactivated with very little vibration and restarted smoothly during brief stops at junctions or in traffic jams. When braking, the engine can be switched off at speeds below 15 km/h (9 mph) already. The coasting function available when the Driving Experience Control switch is set to ECO PRO or COMFORT mode also shuts the engine down completely, creating further potential for lowering fuel consumption.

M Sport exhaust system generates stirring soundtrack, exhaust gas treatment complies with the Euro 6d emissions standard.

The straight-six diesel engine in the new BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and BMW M340d xDrive Touring backs its exhilarating power delivery with a highly distinctive aural accompaniment. Both models are equipped as standard with an M Sport exhaust system whose rear silencer culminates in a pair of trapezoidal tailpipes.

With a view to minimising emissions, the diesel engine in the new BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and BMW M340d xDrive Touring includes an efficient low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation circuit and an extremely powerful three-way high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation circuit. Added to which, the two-stage NOX exhaust re-treatment system fitted as standard by BMW in diesel-engined models since 2012 has been further developed. The close-to-engine component of the exhaust gas treatment system with BMW BluePerformance technology comprises a diesel oxidation catalyst and an SCR coating in the diesel particulate filter. A second SCR catalyst has been integrated at the exit of the close-to-engine system to minimise nitrogen oxide emissions (NOX). The new BMW M models in the BMW 3 Series range therefore comply with the requirements of the Euro 6d emissions standard not due to come into force until 2021.

Sublime power transfer: eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, BMW xDrive and M Sport differential as standard.

The powerful straight-six diesel hooks up as standard with the latest-generation eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, whose ratio spacing is perfectly attuned to the power unit’s performance characteristics. As well as super-sharp gear shifts, the transmission stands out with its optimised hydraulic control system, low converter slip and effective damping of rotational irregularities. Shift paddles on the steering wheel enable lightning-fast manual interventions in the gear selection process. There is also a Launch Control function for accelerating off the line with full dynamic intent.

The intelligent all-wheel-drive system in the new BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and BMW M340d xDrive Touring enables fully variable distribution of drive power between the front and rear wheels using an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case. Working in tandem with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system, BMW xDrive reacts to changes in the driving situation with great precision and in a fraction of a second, maximising traction, agility and handling stability in all weather and road surface conditions, and when the driver explores the car’s sporting capabilities. The system’s rear-biased setup helps to produce the driving experience expected of an M car, and is especially pronounced with the Driving Experience Control switch set to SPORT or SPORT+ mode. Judicious apportioning of even more power to the rear wheels increases turn-in agility, in particular.

The M Sport differential for the rear axle – another standard feature linked with both DSC and the all-wheel-drive system – ensures power is transferred to the road with even greater precision. The fully variable locking function is able to limit speed equalisation between the inside and outside wheel through corners so that the car’s agility and cornering prowess rise to new levels under hard driving. This helps the driver to power out of bends with extra dynamic verve. In situations where the road surface offers differing levels of adhesion for the left and right rear wheels, the M Sport differential increases traction and handling stability by preventing slip at the wheel struggling for grip.

Standard: M Sport suspension and variable sport steering.

Like the engine and power transmission tech, the chassis systems on board the BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and BMW M340d xDrive Touring are designed to deliver supreme performance. Both models are equipped as standard with M Sport suspension, which extracts the full dynamic handling potential offered by the double-joint spring strut front axle / five-link rear axle combination on the new BMW 3 Series to exhilarating effect. The M Sport package brings a ten-millimetre drop in ride height, M-specific elastokinematics and lift-related dampers. The latter combine extra hydraulic damping on rebound at the front axle with a compression-limiting system at the rear, enabling continuously variable, progressive adjustment of damper firmness in response to spring travel. Vibrations experienced during dynamic cornering or on bumpy road surfaces can therefore be smoothed out with unruffled assurance.

Alternatively, customers can opt for Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers. This system of damper control offers extremely finely metered spring and damping responses and adapts constantly to both driving style and road surface conditions. The compression and rebound stages are tweaked independently of one another to match the situation at hand. The damping characteristics can be adjusted using the Driving Experience Control switch. SPORT and SPORT+ modes optimise dynamic driving and create a noticeable contrast to the more comfort-oriented damper responses in COMFORT and ECO PRO modes.

Both the standard M Sport suspension and optional Adaptive M suspension join forces with variable sport steering, whose Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance helps to give the cars unshakable straight-line poise and accurate turn-in through dynamically taken corners. The variable ratio adjusts to changes in the steering angle, further enhancing comfort. It allows drivers to perform low-speed manoeuvres with minimal steering wheel movement and without changing their grip on the wheel, at the same time as increasing agility on twisty sections of road.

M Sport brakes and M light-alloy wheels with mixed-size tyres.

Outstanding stopping power and a pointedly sporty setup – headlined by short pedal travel and a distinct pressure point – are the defining characteristics of the M Sport brakes (also standard). Four-piston fixed callipers and 348-millimetre discs at the front wheels and single-piston floating callipers with 345-millimetre discs at the rear form the basis for safe, supremely assured handling, while blue-painted callipers bearing the M logo add a visual flourish.

Rounding off the chassis highlights on the new BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and BMW M340d xDrive Touring are 18‑inch M light-alloy wheels with mixed-size tyres measuring 225/45 R 18 at the front and 255/40 R 18 at the rear. 19‑inch M light-alloy wheels in three designs can be found on the options list alongside 19‑inch BMW Individual light-alloy wheels, again with mixed-size tyres. The 19‑inch M light-alloy wheels are also available with high-performance tyres.

M‑specific design features for the exterior and interior.

Signature BMW M exterior design features help to give the new BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and BMW M340d xDrive Touring a distinctive look that re-asserts their outstanding performance capabilities. The front apron, side skirts and rear styling of both models have been crafted to fulfil functional requirements in terms of cooling air supply and aerodynamics. The new BMW M340d xDrive Sedan adds a body-coloured M rear spoiler to the mix. The bespoke design elements on both models also include a mesh-design BMW kidney grille and trapezoidal exhaust tailpipes. BMW Individual High-gloss Shadowline trim and a Cerium Grey metallic finish for the exterior mirror caps, the air intake trim in the front bumper, the surface of the BMW kidney grille mesh and its surround, the tailpipes, and the model badge add to the exclusive appearance of the BMW M duo.

The interior’s styling and equipment are focused entirely on maximising enjoyment of the intense driving experience served up by the car. The standard sports seats for the driver and front passenger are upholstered in an M-specific combination of Sensatec and Alcantara with contrast quilting in Blue, while an anthracite-coloured BMW Individual headliner, an M leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons and shift paddles, M pedals, M-specific floor mats and interior trim strips in Aluminium Tetragon with accent strips in Pearl-effect Chrome bring further touches of sporting flair to the interior.

As well as bespoke powertrain / chassis technology and M-specific design features, the standard equipment roster for the BMW M340d xDrive Sedan and BMW M340d xDrive Touring also includes three-zone automatic climate control (with separate operation of the temperature and ventilation settings both for the driver and front passenger side and the rear compartment), ambient lighting, extended storage and an automatically dimming rear-view mirror. Munich. The new BMW 3 Series range has taken on a more sporting flavour than ever before, as the presence of two top-class athletes at the sharp end of the line-up clearly illustrates. From November 2019, the BMW M340i xDrive Saloon (fuel consumption combined: 38.2 – 40.4 mpg imp; CO₂ emissions combined: 168 – 160 g/km) will be joined in the range by the BMW M340i xDrive Touring (fuel consumption combined: 37.2 – 39.2 mpg imp; CO₂ emissions combined: 172 – 163 g/km). Powertrain and chassis technology developed with race track expertise from BMW M GmbH, distinctive design cues, exclusive standard specification and a cockpit created for the enjoyment of driving pleasure at its most intense treat those on board to a performance experience head and shoulders above anything else in the midsize premium segment. From November 2019, the Saloon and Touring models will also be available in BMW M340i First Edition guise. Limited to 340 units in each case, the First Edition will include particularly enticing design and equipment features.

The new BMW M340i xDrive Saloon and BMW M340i xDrive Touring represent a highly concentrated distillation of the sporting essence that enshrines the 3 Series as the definitive BMW and has set it apart from the competition for over 40 years. The original BMW 3 Series made its mark at launch in 1975 with its strikingly agile handling qualities. And the Touring model – which took to the stage for the first time with the arrival of the second-generation “3” – combined its trailblazing versatility with signature BMW dynamics. Powerful engines (most notably of the six-cylinder in-line variety), consistently upgraded chassis technology and the all-wheel-drive system first introduced on the 3 Series have been serving up a matchless driving experience ever since.

In the model’s latest incarnation, BMW M adds extra depth to the dynamic potency at hand. A 374 hp straight-six unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology, an M Sport differential, M Sport suspension including variable sport steering and M Sport brakes, plus bespoke M exterior features with optimised aerodynamic properties form a flawlessly composed overall package designed to maximise performance. The new BMW M340i xDrive Saloon powers from 0 to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds, the new BMW M340i xDrive Touring in 4.5 seconds. This makes both models half a second quicker than the range-topping variants of the outgoing 3 Series.

Exceptional power: six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology develops 275 kW/374 hp.

The six-cylinder in-line engine developed exclusively for the new BMW M340i xDrive Saloon and BMW M340i xDrive Touring stands out with its instantaneous power delivery and appetite for revs, combined with the smoothness for which BMW engines are renowned and unrivalled levels of efficiency for its output class. The 3.0-litre power unit features an aluminium crankcase with a closed-deck construction and a likewise alloy cylinder head. Weight-minimised pistons and con rods and a crankshaft made from forged steel increase internal engine efficiency. Frictional losses are reduced through a process known as ‘form honing’ for the cylinder bores in the crankcase and by means of their wire-arc sprayed steel coating.

The new straight-six generates 374 hp, an increase of 48 hp on the engine powering the previous range-topping models, while peak torque is up by 50 Nm (37 lb-ft) to 500 Nm (369 lb-ft). Its M TwinPower Turbo technology includes a twin-scroll turbocharger with indirect charge air cooling integrated into the intake system, latest-generation High Precision Injection direct petrol injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing for the intake and exhaust sides. Integrating the turbocharging system into the cast-steel manifold results in a remarkably compact design and, at the same time, means the exhaust flow only has to travel a short distance, allowing charge pressure to develop rapidly from low revs. The turbine’s responsiveness is further enhanced by a reduction in the mass moment of inertia of some 25 per cent. And a wide-opening, electrically controlled wastegate helps to keep emissions down. The maximum operating pressure of the direct injection system, with its cantilevered injectors, has been increased from 200 to 350 bar. This optimises fuel metering and minimises the engine’s emissions. 

M Technic Package with optimised cooling system available as an option for the BMW M340i xDrive Saloon.

The highly efficient cooling system in the new BMW M340i xDrive Saloon and BMW M340i xDrive Touring keeps the engine, transmission and brakes at their ideal operating temperature not only in everyday driving, but also when the cars are pushed to their sporting extremes. It comprises a high-temperature and a low-temperature circuit, plus indirect charge air cooling. A split-cooling valve makes it possible to temporarily shut off crankcase cooling, thereby optimising warm-up behaviour. Also available as an option for the new BMW M340i xDrive Saloon is the M Technic Package, which adds two remote coolant radiators to meet the particularly high demands placed on temperature management at the outer limits of sporty driving – especially in high ambient temperatures.

Standard M Sport exhaust system generates emotionally rich soundtrack.

The new six-cylinder in-line engine delivers its prodigious power to a highly distinctive backing track afforded even greater resonance by the standard M Sport exhaust system. The flap-controlled system hits a particularly rich and thrilling note when SPORT or SPORT+ mode is engaged using the Driving Experience Control switch. The sound accompanying the burgeoning swell of engine power creates a spine-tingling acoustic experience for the occupants of the new BMW M340i xDrive Saloon and BMW M340i xDrive Touring. The dual-branch, twin-tailpipe exhaust system incorporates two petrol particulate filters, enabling the BMW M duo to satisfy the stipulations of the Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard.

Eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, intelligent all-wheel drive and M Sport differential as standard.

The new straight-six power unit teams up as standard with the latest-generation eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, standout features of which include an optimised hydraulic control system, low converter slip, effective damping of rotational irregularities and extremely sporty gear shifts. The ratio spacing is perfectly attuned to the engine’s performance characteristics, and so lends itself to pulsating bursts of speed, while enhancing both driving comfort and efficiency. The selector lever and standard shift paddles on the steering wheel can both be used to assume manual control of the gear selection process. There is also a Launch Control function for accelerating off the line with maximum dynamic intent.

The new BMW M340i xDrive Saloon and new BMW M340i xDrive Touring are also equipped with the M Sport differential as standard. The electronically controlled, fully variable locking function in the rear differential brings about an appreciable improvement in traction and cornering prowess and also boosts directional stability and agility. The locking effect generated by an electric motor limits speed equalisation between the inside and outside rear wheel when cornering, allowing the driver to power out of bends with extraordinary dynamic verve. Governed by the DSC system, the locking function for the rear differential also improves traction and power transmission when driving on road surfaces with differing levels of grip for the left and right rear wheels by preventing a wheel from spinning when it is struggling for purchase. Together with BMW xDrive all-wheel drive, this ensures power is channelled onto the road to maximum agility- and dynamism-enhancing effect.

M Sport suspension and variable sport steering.

The chassis technology developed for the new BMW 3 Series range has all the tools to deliver extremely sporty handling characteristics. With their minimised weight and maximised rigidity, the components of the double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle sharpen cornering dynamics and steering precision, as do the wide tracks and optimum wheel camber settings. The M Sport suspension included as standard on the new BMW M340i xDrive Saloon and new BMW M340i xDrive Touring lowers their ride height by ten millimetres, and features M-specific elastokinematic properties and lift-related dampers. The damper control configuration making its debut in the new BMW 3 Series reduces body movement perceptibly when smoothing out vibrations caused by bumpy road surfaces and dynamic cornering. The result is sporty, authoritative handling. This setup adds extra hydraulic damping on rebound at the front axle and a compression-limiting system at the rear. It is continuously variable and adjusts the damper firmness progressively according to changing spring travel.

Customers also have the option of Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers. These dampers respond adaptively to road surface conditions and driving style in order to eliminate undesired body movement. To this end, the compression and rebound stages are both adjusted continuously and independently of one another. This enables finely metered spring and damping responses, supplying the driver with only relevant information about the road surface. Damping characteristics can be adjusted via the Driving Experience Control switch. SPORT and SPORT+ modes optimise the cars’ ability to provide dynamic handling, creating a noticeable contrast to the more comfort-oriented damper responses in COMFORT and ECO PRO modes.

Variable sport steering is another element of the M Sport suspension and Adaptive M suspension packages. Combining Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance with a variable ratio that adjusts to changes in the steering angle, it helps to give the cars superb straightline poise while also lending itself to effortless low-speed turning and manoeuvring. BMW, one of the world’s most successful premium carmakers, also boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment it first entered 30 years ago. Around one in three BMW cars sold around the world is now equipped with the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system. BMW’s success in this segment has been driven not only by the ever-popular BMW X models but also by all-wheel-drive models based on the other model series, from the BMW 1 Series to the BMW 7 Series. Across these model series, a large choice of AWD models is offered in a wide range of engine versions. At the same time, BMW continues to refine this technology and take it in new directions. By offering BMW xDrive in combination with a hybrid drive and with a front-wheel-drive platform, the company has repeatedly demonstrated its proficiency in the all-wheel-drive field, proficiency that will secure BMW’s position at the forefront of this sector well into the future. Today, BMW offers more than 110 models – of either transmission type – with BMW xDrive in 12 different model series, as well as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car and the compact BMW 225xe with electrified all-wheel drive.

The focus from day one: traction and dynamics.
BMW’s first foray into the all-wheel-drive market came with the unveiling of the BMW 325i “Allrad” at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in 1985. From the outside, the newcomer didn’t immediately reveal its inner qualities, so its performance when the journalists took it out on the test track was even more of an eye-opener. This very first BMW all-wheel-drive system not only improved traction away from surfaced roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also made for more dynamic handling through corners. “The new BMW is the new champion when it comes to handling,” was the verdict of the testers from German car magazine Auto Zeitung not long after the first unveiling.

Today, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system takes typical BMW driving dynamics to new levels. The current generation of this system is controlled by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM) system, which ensures that xDrive always responds appropriately at the earliest possible moment, based on reliable sensing and monitoring of the current driving situation. The interventions may be performed either entirely by BMW xDrive, or by xDrive in combination with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Performance Control (DPC). The resulting fast and precise control of drive power distribution ensures typical BMW handling characteristics even under extremely dynamic cornering.

The all-wheel-drive system is biased towards the typical BMW rear-wheel-drive characteristics. That is to say, on the all-wheel-drive models a greater share of the drive power is sent to the rear wheels, even under normal driving conditions. This maintains the typical BMW precise steering response, with virtually no torque steer. For crisp turn-in and high tracking stability, the latest-generation BMW xDrive system starts increasing the amount of power sent to the rear wheels as soon as the vehicle enters a corner, further enhancing the driving pleasure for which BMW is a byword.

BMW all-wheel-drive technology: continuous evolution since 1985.
The full-time all-wheel-drive system featured on the BMW 325i “Allrad” of 1985 split the drive power in a ratio of 37 to 63 per cent between the front and rear wheels. In response to wheel speed differences, visco locks in the transfer case and rear differential were capable of providing a virtually rigid connection between the front and rear wheels, in order to improve traction and stability. This model’s name was soon changed to BMW 325iX, and from 1988 it was offered in a “touring” version as well (lower-case spelling up to and including the E46 series).

1991: BMW 525iX.
Three years on, BMW introduced an all-wheel-drive model in the BMW 5 Series too. For the first time, the power split was now electronically controlled. The newly developed system featured multi-plate clutches that allowed the default 36:64 front-to-rear power split to be varied seamlessly and automatically in line with driving conditions. Initially a hydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch was used at the rear axle, but this was later replaced by electronically controlled selective braking intervention. The system monitored the driving situation using wheel speed signals from the Anti-lock Braking System, supplemented by further information about brake status, engine speed and throttle valve position.

From the outset the all-wheel-drive system of the BMW 525iX was a class apart. The electronic control system delivered a very fast and precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered in both Sedan and touring versions.

1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.
In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of 38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X (Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle challenging conditions off the beaten track.

In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept, there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series.

2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.
Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only premium model in its class for years to come.

The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.

In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.

2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid drive.
With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile, in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the all-wheel-drive market.

2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.

BMW xDrive also available for other model series.
The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision, BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7 Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6 Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5 Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe models of the new BMW 4 Series.

Driving progress ever forward.
BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new front-wheel-drive format.

With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system. This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the front wheels.

Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.
BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.
In September 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This high-end BMW luxury model pioneers groundbreaking innovations on all fronts, and will be available with BMW xDrive from its market launch in October. The new luxury sedan will also be the first model to allow intelligent all-wheel-drive to be combined with Integral Active Steering – that is to say with passively steering rear wheels.

BMW has won three accolades at the Environmental Transport Association’s Green Car Awards 2010.  This year the Environmental Transport Association examined over 5,000 vehicles to establish the greenest cars on the market for the Green Car Awards 2010.  With class wins in the large family, off-road and luxury car categories, BMW’s EfficientDynamics programme was praised for offering customers outstanding fuel economy and low emissions without compromising driving enjoyment, across the BMW range.

The BMW 7 Series successfully combines efficiency and opulence to take the award for greenest luxury car.  With only 181g/km CO2 emissions and returning a combined 40.9 mpg, the BMW 740d demonstrates that being green doesn’t have to involve sacrificing luxury.

Emitting just 128 g/km CO2, whilst returning 58.9 mpg made the BMW 320d Touring this years winner of the greenest large family car category.  It’s industry leading economy and family friendly flexibility has cemented the 320d Touring as a firm favourite in the 3 Series range.

The final winner, the newest member of the X family, has walked away with the award for the greenest off-road car.  The combination of efficient diesel engines, together with Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Stop-Start and the choice of two or four-wheel-drive means that the X1 lives up to its title of the greenest off-road car.

All of the winning models benefit from BMW’s award-winning EfficientDynamics technologies, which have been offered as standard since 2007.  All the models receive a combination of innovative technologies involving a mixture of Auto Start / Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration, Active Aerodynamics, low rolling resistance tyres, Electric Power Steering, on-demand ancillary systems and optimum gearshift indicator features. 

Stephen Chater, BMW Group corporate operations manager, said: “To have three wins in the Green Car Awards is a phenomenal achievement.  It is a testament to the measures that we’ve implemented within our EfficientDynamics strategy into every BMW, meaning that we’re able to provide customers with the driving pleasure they expect from a BMW, while still meeting the stringent requirements for fuel-efficiency and low emissions.”

Andrew Davis, director at the Environmental Transport Association, said: “With the price of petrol at record levels and greater understanding about the threat to the environment there has never been a more important time to make fuel efficiency a deciding factor when choosing a car.”

1. Introduction

Launched in March 2007, the new BMW 5 Series resets the standard by which
executive cars will be judged for years to come. With its predecessor
achieving record UK sales in 2006 of 19,606 units, demand for the car is at an
all-time high. The addition of elements of BMW's EfficientDynamics programme,
together with subtle design enhancements, ensures that the new 5 Series will
appeal to an even broader audience and build on the success of the outgoing
car.

EfficientDynamics is an on-going BMW philosophy that brings together a host of
new, innovative technologies including visions of a zero-emission mobility
future.
The hydrogen-powered 7 Series shows how this might be possible while today's
innovative lightweight material constructions and a host of class-leading
engine technologies on the new 5 Series bring EfficientDynamics to the
mainstream.

The combination of today's EfficientDynamics technologies in the new 5 Series
delivers a car with all of the driving characteristics expected of a BMW but
with significantly better economy and less emissions. Better, in fact, than
many hybrid solutions.

EfficientDynamics technologies deliver significant financial benefits to retail
and corporate buyers. Based on a total annual mileage of 20,000 miles, 75 per
cent of which is business with prevailing fuel costs, the company driver of a
523i M Sport Saloon paying 40 per cent tax would be £1,678 better off per
year. A private buyer of a 530i M Sport Touring, again based on 20,000 miles
driving per annum, would be better off by £1,059 in fuel costs alone when
compared to the outgoing car.

BMW UK's managing director, Jim O'Donnell, said; "For the past 35 years, the
BMW 5 Series has been the Executive car that all competitors have aspired to
emulate and customers have aspired to own. Cutting-edge design, high levels of
performance and refinement, the lowest cost of ownership and rock-solid
residual values have created more than three decades of unprecedented
desirability in its class.

"The new 5 Series is the distillation of that combined experience. Noticeable
design improvements combine with EfficientDynamics technologies to provide
tangible performance improvements. Increases of up to 25 per cent in economy
and emissions results, in most cases, in hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds
of annual benefit to retail and corporate owners alike.

"We believe that customers prefer the driving experience of an ultra-efficient
internal combustion engine rather than a hybrid car, with all of the associated
weight of the battery and motors. To prove a point, compare the Lexus GS450h
hybrid to the new 535d. The BMW offers a better driving experience thanks, in
part, to its 200kgs weight advantage, lower emissions and superior fuel
efficiency, all for nearly £5,000 less.
"The stage is set for the new BMW 5 Series to remain the benchmark executive
car for the remainder of this decade, and many more to come."

BMW 5 Series ES launched:

Following January's successful launch of the 318i ES and 320d ES models, BMW
Great Britain has launched ES versions of the existing 5 Series range.
Offering customers exceptional value for money, specification levels are based
upon the respective 520i, 525i, 525d and SE models, with ES cars receiving up
to £4,440 worth of additional specification (depending on derivative) for the
nominal price of £500.00.

In addition to the ES 'package', the full range of normal options, accessories
and Individual colours and upholsteries can be specified.

The current 5 Series Saloon continues in production until June 2003, with the
Touring remaining in production into 2004. The all-new BMW 5 Series saloon is
on sale from 18 September 2003.

First price increase for X5 since launch:

BMW Great Britain has increased the price of the BMW X5 for the first time
since its 2000 launch. All models increase by 2.5 per cent. Option prices are
unaffected.

Launching a completely new category of high performance four-wheel drive cars,
the BMW X5 became the definitive Sports Activity Vehicle and set the benchmark
that others have aspired to. Its success continues and the X5 3.0d remains
forward sold until November 2003. A customer ordering other models would still
have to wait until October 2003 for delivery.

All orders received prior to the increase will be 'price protected', meaning
that the customer will pay the originally agreed price, and not the realigned
figure.

The increase is the first pricing action since the BMW X5 was introduced as a
4.4i and 4.4i Sport in October 2000. The 3.0i and 3.0d and their respective
Sport models were introduced in January and May 2001, with the range-topping,
high performance, 347 bhp X5 4.6iS launched in December 2001. BMW's
Spartanburg production facility in South Carolina, USA has built 272,000 X5's,
with nearly 16,000 already on UK roads. Registrations in the UK in 2002
totalled 6,665 and represented the car's best selling year to date.
