BMW Group UK finishes January in a strong position, announcing several model updates to further enhance its already-compelling product portfolio. BMW iX1 and BMW iX2 benefit from an increased range thanks to technological refinements, while BMW 2, 3 and 4 Series model derivatives receive an elevated M Sport Pro offering. Building on a successful month of accolades, the BMW i7 was named overall winner at the Professional Driver Car of the Year awards. Meanwhile, BMW and MINI retained Company Car and Van’s overall Fleet Manufacturer of the Year title for a second consecutive year. Furthermore, a raft of BMW M5 models, finished in BMW Individual exterior paint, join the UK press fleet and will soon be available for testing.

Introducing a range of BMW model updates from March 2026.
From March 2026 onwards, BMW iX1 and BMW iX2 models will benefit from an increased all-electric range thanks to the implementation of silicon-carbide semiconductor components in the power electronics (SiC inverter). This technology enables greater efficiency and reduced consumption, resulting in a single-charge range of up to 320 miles (WLTP¹) in the case of the BMW iX1 eDrive20, while xDrive30 models will be able to cover a maximum of 290 miles¹ between charge stops. BMW iX2 models will deliver comparable efficiency, with up to 320 miles¹ and up to 297 miles¹ achievable in eDrive20 and xDrive30 variants respectively.

Also arriving in spring are new elevated M Sport Pro models for BMW 2, 3 and 4 Series derivatives. Previously packaged as a standalone option in conjunction with the M Sport trim level, the new standalone M Sport Pro models bring an increased level of standard equipment, including 19-inch M Sport alloy wheels, red-painted brake callipers, Adaptive LED Headlights and darkened exterior design features. Available to order from retailers nationwide, first deliveries of the new M Sport Pro models will take place in April 2026.

In addition to these model updates, from February 2026 production, all BMW models will be adorned with the new BMW roundel – first showcased on the all-new BMW iX3. A revised BMW M logo will be introduced at the same time. 

BMW triumphs at the 2026 Professional Driver Car of the Year awards.
BMW UK celebrated a successful evening at the 2026 Professional Driver Car of the Year awards after the BMW i7 was crowned overall Car of the Year. Alongside the headline award, the flagship saloon topped the Chauffeur Car category, while the BMW 550e xDrive was selected by Professional Driver readers as Executive Car of the Year.

Commenting on the success of the BMW i7, Professional Driver Editor, Mark Bursa said, “The new 7-series has become a game-changer in the chauffeur market, giving drivers and operators a practical and supremely luxurious electric limousine. In London especially, TfL insists that new licensed cars have to be electric, and the i7 is the only really suitable option.”

The Professional Driver Awards are judged by the publication’s readership, who test and score more than 50 cars during an intensive single-day judging event held in August. The awards were announced at the Professional Driver awards dinner at the Brighton Metropole Hotel yesterday evening.

Double success for BMW Group at the 2026 Company Car and Van Awards.
The annual Company Car and Van Awards provide expert guidance to those responsible for shaping company fleets across the UK, recognising the best manufacturers and vehicles for specific fleet use cases.

At this year’s awards, BMW and MINI were named as the overall Fleet Manufacturer of the Year for the second consecutive year. Commenting on the win, Andrew Walker, Editor of Company Car and Van said, “They’ve cemented their position again as the most forward-thinking premium brands across all car sizes. A worthy winner. Every company car sector is covered from the MINI Cooper Electric to the updated BMW iX”.

In addition to the leading award, the recently revised BMW iX was presented the award for Premium Car of the Year. Judges praised its “amazing” drive and highlighted its “class-leading” interior. “Not one to stand still, BMW took a very good car in the iX and in 2025 made it even better, simplifying the model line-up and tweaking it here and there to make it drive and handle even better than before,” Walker added.

A raft of BMW M5 models finished in BMW Individual paint join the UK press fleet.
BMW UK recently added six new BMW M5 models in a range of special BMW Individual exterior paint finishes to its press fleet. The six cars include both Saloon and Touring body styles enveloped in Le-Mans Blue, Wildberry, Malachite Green, Chalk Grey, Anglesey Green and Fashion Grey paint finishes.

From legendary classics to innovative new shades, the BMW Individual paint programme comprises over 150 exclusive colours, offering BMW’s most discerning customers the opportunity to uniquely personalise their vehicle over and above the core options list.

The shades carefully selected for the new range of BMW M5 press cars gently nod to the brand’s rich heritage. For example, the Le-Mans-Blue-painted BMW M5 Saloon is a homage to the iconic 24-hours of Le Mans race – where BMW last took overall victory with the V12 LMR in 1999 – and matches the E39 BMW M5 from BMW UK’s heritage fleet.

Munich. BMW M GmbH once again achieved outstanding sales growth in 2025. For no less than the 14th time in a row, the manufacturer of high-performance and performance vehicles reported record sales. And for the 7th time running, BMW M GmbH vehicles outsold their competitors by a considerable margin. A sales total of 213,457 vehicles surpassed the previous year’s excellent result (206,582 vehicles) by three per cent. Both the high-performance and performance models set new benchmarks. Keys to success in all markets are a state-of-the-art model range spanning many vehicle classes and an extensive portfolio of powertrain options. In 2025, nearly every tenth BMW sold was a BMW M model. This share of 9.8 per cent represents another milestone.

“Our 14th consecutive sales record validates our strategy. We will continue to offer performance and high-performance vehicles across the entire BMW model range. With fully electric, partly electric and all-ICE powertrains,” says Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH.

High-performance executive models drive growth.
The high-performance models from BMW M GmbH combine racetrack capabilities with unrestricted everyday usability. BMW M5 models became key growth drivers in 2025. The BMW M5 Sedan (energy consumption, weighted, combined: 17.6–17.2 kWh/100 km and 5.0–4.8 l/100 km (WLTP); CO₂ emissions, weighted, combined: 114–108 g/km (WLTP); CO₂ classes: with discharged battery G, weighted, combined C; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 10.7–10.5 l/100 km (WLTP))*^,1 and the BMW M5 Touring (energy consumption, weighted, combined: 18.1–17.6 kWh/100 km and 5.3–5.0 l/100 km (WLTP); CO₂ emissions, weighted, combined: 119–114 g/km (WLTP); CO₂ classes: with discharged battery G, weighted, combined D–C; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 10.9–10.7 l/100 km (WLTP))*^,1 saw enormous sales increases in their first full year on the markets, making them key contributors to the success of BMW M GmbH. Both vehicles offer a model-specific version of the M HYBRID system with a peak output of 535 kW/727 hp and a maximum system torque of 1,000 Nm. A high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor combine with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission to provide power to the M xDrive all-wheel drive system. The great appeal of the BMW M5 Touring was underscored by a “Golden Steering Wheel” award. This accolade is awarded by “Auto Bild” and “Bild am Sonntag”, both published by the German Axel Springer SE publishing house. The high-performance model achieved the highest points score of all finalists in the competition. Moreover, the distinguished jury rated the BMW M5 Touring ahead of the other class finalists in all driving disciplines, as well as in terms of efficiency and value for money.

The BMW M2 Coupé (fuel consumption, combined: 10.2–9.7 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 230–221 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)* was the best-selling high-performance vehicle of 2025. This model is also available with a manual transmission (fuel consumption, combined: 10.2–9.7 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 230–221 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)* and as an even more track-focused BMW M2 CS special model (fuel consumption, combined: 10.0 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 226 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)*. This delivers 390 kW/530 hp of power and recently set a new record time of 7:25.5 minutes on the Nürburgring.

Favourite among performance enthusiasts: the BMW M3 family.
The BMW M3 models are another family of high-performance best-sellers. The series impresses with perfectly tailored model variants and includes sedans with various output levels. The BMW M3 entry-level model is a particularly purist vehicle that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and 353 kW/480 hp of power (fuel consumption, combined: 10.1 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 230–229 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)*. Then there are the extremely popular Touring variants. 2025 also saw the launch of the BMW M3 CS Touring (fuel consumption, combined: 10.5 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 238 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)*, the most sporting exemplar with 405 kW/551 hp. The large number of BMW M3 family sales is a clear sign of the model series’ continued allure and represents a major contribution to the new record of almost 71,500 high-performance vehicles sold.

M Performance model is BMW M GmbH best-seller.
A particularly popular model and also the best-selling BMW M GmbH vehicle of 2025 was the BMW X3 M50 (fuel consumption, combined: 8.3 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 189 g/km (WLTP); CO₂ class: G)*. The top athlete in the premium mid-size SAV segment offers unique performance capabilities and a charismatic appearance. The M TwinPower Turbo engine, combined with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, delivers a maximum system output of 293 kW/398 hp. The power of the BMW X3 M50 is complemented by specific chassis technology and signature M design elements. With these attributes, it overtook the BMW i4 and its M60 Gran Coupé xDrive variant (energy consumption, combined (WLTP): 20.9 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined (WLTP): 0 g/km, CO₂ class: A)*, which delivers an output of 442 kW/601 hp and a range of up to 551 km. The electric BMW i4 range-topper was the best-selling BMW M GmbH model from 2022 to 2024. 

In 2025, nearly every tenth BMW sold was a BMW M model, and the sales share of 9.8 per cent (9.4 per cent in the year prior) represents another new record. BMW M vehicles are especially popular in Switzerland, where nearly every fourth BMW ordered is a BMW M model. 

Exceptional sales total, top spots in the individual markets.
In the key markets, BMW M GmbH vehicles led the field, beating their competitors by a considerable margin. The models were particularly coveted in the U.S., the largest single market at over 72,000 units sold. But BMW M models also achieved top positions in markets such as Canada, Germany, Korea, South Africa and the United Kingdom. In China, BMW M GmbH achieved its largest absolute sales increase.

Focused model strategy to secure and expand top position.
The state-of-the-art model portfolio with its comprehensive range of ICE, plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles is at the heart of BMW M GmbH success. The development of models based on the Neue Klasse will provide further momentum. “Our strategy of being open towards new technologies once again paid off in 2025. BMW M GmbH stands for optimal performance, independently of the powertrain type. In all markets and across all vehicle classes. Motorsport remains a key pillar at BMW M GmbH.
The BMW M Motorsport race cars – the BMW M Hybrid V8, the BMW M4 GT3 EVO and the BMW M4 GT4 EVO – achieved a total of more than 180 victories in 2025. In works motorsport, the BMW M Hybrid V8 delivered a competitive performance in the first half of the FIA WEC season and the BMW M GmbH marks 14th consecutive record year. The best result of a season marked by highs and lows was the 1-2 finish at Road America. The BMW M4 GT3 EVO had a tremendous season. While the 1-2 victory at the Bathurst 12 Hour race in Australia was still won by the predecessor model, the EVO version seamlessly continued the series with top results. Triumphs at the Nürburgring 24 Hours (Germany), the Suzuka 1000 (Japan), the Indianapolis 8 Hour race and in the GTD Pro Class at the 6 Hours of the Glen and the Petit Le Mans (both U.S.) are among the highlights of a season that saw over 80 victories and 100 further podium finishes.

Teams driving the BMW M4 GT4 EVO achieved over 100 victories in the 2025 season. More than any other model, the BMW M4 GT4 is associated with customer racing. The victory in the SP10 at the Nürburgring 24 Hours was a particular high point. In the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) racing series, these vehicles came out on top in nine out of ten races. Moreover, the BMW M4 GT4 EVO triumphed in all classes at the GT4 America. The strong results of the GT4 teams helped BMW M Motorsport secure the SRO manufacturers’ title in the GT4 segment. The 2026 season will see the debut of the BMW M2 Racing as a new entry-level vehicle complementing the model portfolio for customer racing.

BMW UK is celebrating another successful year at the annual Business Car Awards, after retaining the prestigious Fleet Manufacturer of the Year title for a fourth consecutive year. In addition to the headline accolade, BMW secured three further category wins across its diverse product portfolio, with the BMW i4, BMW M5 and the recently unveiled BMW iX3 each receiving recognition.

On presenting the title award, Martyn Collins, Editor of Business Car said, “With its product portfolio, BMW continues to make significant strides with electrification. It now offers an extensive and class-leading range of all-electric and plug-in hybrid models to cater to diverse customer needs. The BMW i4 retains its status as Best Premium Car.
Updated last year with a refreshed exterior design and an elevated interior, the BMW i4 added a 26^th accolade to its cabinet last night, after it was named Business Car’s Best Premium Car for the second consecutive year.

“The BMW i4’s reign at the Business Car Awards seems unassailable,” judges commented, as the Gran Coupé secured its third Business Car award in the last three years. “Following a recent facelift, newer electric and ICE-powered rivals still can’t topple this EV, which offers an enviable package of competitive and trustworthy electric range, the expected BMW driver appeal, and a practical hatchback design,” they continued.

Business Car’s Driver’s Choice award presented to the BMW M5.
Now a viable choice for corporate customers and fleets thanks to its new electrified powertrain, the BMW M5 received its first-ever Business Car award, claiming the top spot as ‘Driver’s Choice’ for 2025. Not only a “performance icon” but “an innovator too,” the seventh-generation BMW M5 “moves the model on significantly and is now a plug-in hybrid,” said Collins. “Don’t think it has gone soft, however, as the saloon and Touring estate models are still a very complete way to go very fast. Despite having more than 700hp, the M5 is also easy and involving to drive,” he added. This recognition is testament to the BMW M5’s exceptional versatility, offering a unique combination of devastating performance and a usable all-electric range of up to 43 miles (WLTP¹).

The all-new BMW iX3 stands out as Business Car’s ‘One to Watch’.
Recently unveiled at the IAA Mobility and ushering a new era for the brand, the all-new BMW iX3 stood out as Business Car’s ‘One to Watch’. Predicted to “attract the attention of fleet buyers thanks to its all-new Neue Klasse underpinnings,” the SAV impressed judges with its “slimmer batteries, more efficient motors and clever technology.” With a single-charge range of up to 500 miles (WLTP²), the BMW iX3 is the UK’s longest-range battery electric vehicle, bringing a compelling offering for business customers with its exceptional driving dynamics and trailblazing technology.

Reflecting on BMW Group’s success, Andrew Jago, General Manager, Corporate Sales at BMW Group UK, said, “We are delighted to retain Business Car’s Fleet Manufacturer of the Year title for a fourth consecutive year. The sculptural front end, prominently flared wheel arches, long roofline, dynamically stretched side window graphic and powerful rear end play a formative role in giving the new BMW M5 Touring its inimitable, motor racing-inspired aura. And the model-specific BMW M Performance Parts for the exterior enrich the car’s athletic appearance with exclusive details that turn heads from every angle.

The two-section M Performance rear diffuser carbon fibre adds a particularly prominent accent. With its strikingly cut bars, it shines an even more intense spotlight on the muscular appearance of the rear end. Paired with the M Performance tailpipe trims for the exhaust system, it has an extremely effective visual impact. These trims are made from a titanium/carbon fibre mix and send out a crystal clear message of uncompromising performance with their milled titanium end rings and embossed M5 logo. The M Performance rear fins carbon fibre set an understated seal on the aerodynamic overall concept and add another sporting ingredient to the new BMW M5 Touring.

Finely judged enhancements for the design and aerodynamics also feature at the front of the new BMW M5 Touring. The M Performance front splitter carbon fibre, for example, fits neatly into the overall structure and showcases the central air intake to even more eye-catching effect. When viewing the car from the side, the M Performance sill extensions carbon fibre create an attractive visual connection with the stretched roofline of the new BMW M5 Touring. They emphasise the athletic aesthetic of the body’s side frame, which has a model-specific design – especially when the M Performance side decals Frozen Black are also specified. Additional highlights of the side view are the M exterior mirror caps carbon fibre and the M Performance aerial cover aramid. A high-tech fibre composite material, aramid has similar properties to carbon fibre, while also offering high electromagnetic permeability.

Authentic racing-car aura inside and outside the cockpit.

The M Performance fuel tank cap carbon fibre turns every refuel into a small pit stop. It is made from high-quality carbon fibre and has M Performance badging in brushed aluminium. The interior of the new BMW M5 Touring already majors on sporting appeal as standard, but it too can be given a finishing touch in the form of the M Performance floor mats. The four-piece set brings together high-quality leather-look edging with decorative stitching in contrasting colours and a sewn-in ribbon in the colours of BMW M GmbH.

The M Performance key case also exudes a clear sense of racing passion. The high-quality cover – made from Alcantara and leather in carbon fibre look – protects the car key against scratches and can be attached by means of a leather tab on the key fob. Meanwhile, the M Performance tyre bags provide unbeatable protection for wheel sets during transportation and storage. These also follow the bold M Performance design approach, come with markings indicating the wheel position, and have a reinforced handle for easy transportation.

All the BMW M Performance Parts have been developed with the help of over five decades of expertise amassed by BMW M GmbH. The products offered for the new BMW M5 Touring have been tested according to the BMW Group’s stringent quality guidelines and have undergone homologation alongside the overall vehicle, which means separate registration with the vehicle licensing authorities is not required.

The all-new BMW M5 Touring ^{(energy consumption, weighted, combined: 141.2 – 166.2 mpg and 27.5 – 25.8 kWh/62 miles; CO2 emissions, weighted, combined: 46 – 39 g/km; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 25.9 – 27.2 mpg in the WLTP cycle; CO2 classes, weighted, combined: B, with discharged battery G),} the third Touring variant in the history of the BMW M5, builds on both past and current successes. BMW M GmbH first introduced a Touring variant back in 1992 alongside the second generation of the BMW M5 Saloon. In 2007, the fourth generation of the high-performance saloon also gained a BMW M5 Touring sibling. And now the new edition ensures customers will be able to choose from two body variants of the BMW M5 for the third time in its 40-year history.

As such, the all-new BMW M5 Touring satisfies the wish list of demanding enthusiasts who value the hallmark dynamic prowess of an M machine and the refined performance of a BMW M5, but do not want to forego the additional load space, practicality and long-distance comfort of a Touring model. In fact, the new BMW M5 Touring has up to 1,630 litres of flexible load-carrying capacity for leisure activities and trips away.

With its fresh take on the traditional BMW M design playbook, the new BMW M5 Touring brings its racing-car-inspired character to the fore. Its M-specific design cues are focused on fulfilling their functional brief when it comes to cooling and aerodynamic balance. The pronounced roof spoiler and heavily raked, slim D-pillar underscore the car’s dynamic lines.

A high proportion of surfaces painted in body colour offer visual purity and references to the high-performance sports car’s top-class dynamics, while prominently flared wheel arches, side skirts and the M-specific design of the front and rear aprons distinguish the BMW M5 Touring clearly from the BMW 5 Series Touring.

The overall concept of the new BMW M5 Touring enables it to deliver an enthralling driving experience on the track as well as in everyday use and longer journeys. Alongside its long wheelbase, wide tracks, a low centre of gravity and almost perfect 50:50 weight distribution, the new BMW M5 Touring features a body with improved rigidity and enhanced aerodynamics, as well as chassis technology in a model-specific configuration that has been carefully tuned for the M HYBRID drive system.

As in the BMW M5 Saloon, the BMW M5 Touring’s M HYBRID system produces a maximum output of 727 hp and peak torque of 1,000 Nm to deliver intoxicating performance on road and track alike. At the same time, the partly electrified powertrain enables almost silent and locally emission-free driving with a range of up to 42 miles (WLTP), while the Combined Charging Unit allows AC charging at up to 11 kW.

The new BMW M5 Touring will be unveiled publicly at Monterey Car Week in California in mid-August 2024. It will be built at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing alongside the new BMW M5 Saloon starting in November, with first UK customer deliveries from early 2025.

Athletic silhouette with elegantly stretched Touring proportions.
Viewed from the side, the distinctive character of the new BMW M5 Touring is accentuated by the elegantly stretched roofline and a model-specific roof spoiler. The whole side frame of the body has been redesigned for the high-performance model with a confident, sporting aesthetic as the aim.

As a result, the new BMW M5 Touring is 75 mm wider at the front wheel arches than the BMW 5 Series Touring and 48 mm wider at the rear. With an exterior length of 5,096 mm and width of 1,970 mm (matching the dimensions of the BMW M5 Saloon), the high-performance model is 36 mm longer than the BMW 5 Series Touring and 70 mm wider. It stands 1,516 mm tall, which means it almost precisely mirrors it in height.

The side window graphic tapers in the rear section of the body, generating a powerful shoulder area highlighted by the prominent wheel arch extensions specific to the new BMW M5 Touring. In contrast to the BMW M5 Saloon, the character line above the flush door handles extends to the rear lights on the Touring model and brings an extra touch of elegance to the distinctive silhouette. Side skirts painted in body colour round off the muscular style. The hunkered-down body with front and rear aprons extending down almost to the road surface lend additional emphasis to the physically imposing proportions. The aerodynamically and aeroacoustically optimised M exterior mirror caps are painted in Black high-gloss and can be specified as an option in carbon fibre.

Broad, powerful rear end with monolithic surface treatment.
The new BMW M5 Touring cuts a muscular and visually striking figure at the rear. As at the front of the car, generously sized surfaces create a monolithic appearance and confidently showcase the expressive rear end. The flared rear wheel arches team up with the slim rear lights extending into the sides of the car and the vertical reflectors at the far outer edges of the rear to accentuate its width and powerful stature.

Along with the roof spoiler, an eye-catching two-section diffuser helps to optimise the car’s aerodynamics and increase traction. The diffuser’s vertical divider references the split in the centre of the front apron, introducing another design feature adapted from racing-car design. In addition, the familiar M twin exhaust tailpipes in Black Chrome are integrated into the left and right of the rear apron.

M HYBRID drive system with intoxicating performance and impressive electric range.
The third Touring variant in the history of the BMW M5, the new BMW M5 Touring now comes with an electrified drive system for the first time. The model-specific version of the M HYBRID system brings together a high-revving 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor integrated into the transmission. The combustion engine and electric motor generate a combined output of 727 hp and peak torque of 1,000 Nm.

The instantly available torque from the electric motor and the V8 engine’s appetite for revs pave the way for remarkable acceleration. The BMW M5 Touring sprints to 62 mph from rest in 3.6 seconds and reaches 124 mph in 11.1 seconds. The 1,000 Nm maximum system torque of the M HYBRID drive additionally provides outstanding mid-range acceleration, which is reflected in a 50 – 75 mph time of 3.1 seconds in fifth gear. The limited top speed of 155 mph can be raised to 189 mph by specifying the optional M Driver’s Package.

The high output of the electric motor also enables it to drive with zero tailpipe emissions in all-electric operating mode – not just in urban traffic, but also further afield. Top speed with electric power only is 87 mph and electric range in the WLTP test cycle is 38 – 42 miles.

Extremely stiff body structure with M-specific bracing elements.
A package of precisely interlinked M-specific bracing elements focused on enhancing driving dynamics increases the stiffness of the body structure. At the front, a shear panel connects the spring strut towers with the bulkhead, along with model-specific tower-to-front end struts. Further strengthening elements can be found in the centre and rear sections of the engine compartment.

In the rear body, the new BMW M5 Touring comes with model-specific underfloor bracing elements, including a cross-bar and a shear panel, as well as further stiffening elements for the luggage compartment. Added to which, the mountings connecting the chassis to the body and the steering to the front axle subframe also have exceptional torsional rigidity.

Custom-tuned chassis technology for maximum prowess and superb long-distance comfort.
The new BMW M5 Touring has exceptional dynamic handling thanks to the model-specific kinematic and elastokinematic properties of its sophisticated chassis. The double-wishbone front axle optimises longitudinal and lateral rigidity, while the selective use of aluminium components lowers the weight of the unsprung mass. Newly designed wheel carriers, bespoke axle kinematics with large castor and kingpin angles, a lowered roll centre and model-specific elastomer bearings produce a matchless combination of dynamic potency and finely balanced comfort; the perfect recipe for everyday driving and longer journeys.

M multifunction seats enhance racing-car feeling and comfort over longer journeys.
The driver and front passenger are welcomed as standard by M multifunction seats offering comfort for long journeys, along with seat heating, multi-way electric adjustment and a memory function. The integral head restraints with illuminated model lettering retract to their lowest position as the occupants leave the car. Active seat ventilation for the driver and front passenger and seat heating for the outer rear seats are available as options.

Optional panoramic glass sunroof.
The roof of the new BMW M5 Touring is painted in a Black solid finish as standard. There is also the option of a panoramic glass sunroof, which is designed as a body-mounted module and extends in a single section from just behind the windscreen deep into the rear of the vehicle. This floods the interior with light and gives the exterior an even more elegant appearance that is neatly set off by roof trim strips in Black high-gloss. An electrically operated roller blind, part of the Comfort or Ultimate Pack, is on hand to provide interior shading.

Modern functionality for everyday use, leisure and longer journeys.
The backrests of the rear seats can be split 40:20:40 and folded down as standard to expand load capacity from 500 litres to a maximum of 1,630. The new BMW M5 Touring is also equipped with a through-loading facility as standard, making it easier to transport larger items of luggage and long items of sports equipment. Automatic tailgate operation and Comfort Access are part of standard specification, enabling hands-free opening and closing of the tailgate. A trailer coupling that extends and retracts electrically is available as an option. The maximum trailer load of the new BMW M5 Touring is 2,000 kg.

Assistance systems for assured and comfortable driving.

The new BMW M5 Touring offers a wealth of standard and optional systems for assisted driving and parking, offering assurance and comfort in day-to-day driving. Standard specification includes features such as front collision warning, Lane Departure Warning including lane return with steering assistance, the Evasion Assistant, the Attentiveness Assistant and the Speed Limit Info system. The optional Driving Assistant Professional adds Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function together with tech including the Steering and Lane Control Assistant, traffic light detection, automatic Speed Limit Assist and Active Navigation.

The optionally available Parking Assistant Professional also enables automated parking and manoeuvring over distances of up to 200 metres, controllable either from inside the car or remotely via smartphone.

Greater flexibility to personalise the driving experience.

The control panel on the centre console of the new BMW M5 Touring houses an M5-specific composition of buttons, which can be used to tailor the driving experience to individual preferences in a variety of ways. The Setup button provides direct access to the configuration of the drive system, Drivelogic, chassis, steering, braking system and M xDrive, as well as the intensity of brake energy recuperation. Two overall vehicle setups can be stored and selected quickly using the M buttons on the steering wheel. The Launch Control function is available in all the M Setup configurations, except for the M xDrive system’s 2WD mode.

Pressing the DSC button activates M Dynamic Mode, increasing the DSC intervention thresholds for brake inputs and engine power reduction. Alternatively, DSC can be switched off completely. Another button allows the driver to select M Mode. When they switch from the default ROAD setting to SPORT, interventions from the driver assistance systems are restricted to just the essential functions required for sporty driving, as is the content shown in the information display. The standard-fit M Drive Professional, also enables the use of TRACK mode, with other features including the M Laptimer and the Boost Control function, which maximises longitudinal dynamics when executing mid-range sprints and overtaking manoeuvres.

The operating mode of the M HYBRID system can also be adjusted as desired. The new M Hybrid button allows the driver to choose between HYBRID mode – for intelligently controlled interplay between the combustion engine and electric motor to maximise either efficiency or performance, depending on the driving situation – and the ELECTRIC setting, in which the combustion engine is only brought into play by accelerator kickdown or using the gearshift paddles. eCONTROL mode is used for effective brake energy recuperation and maintaining battery charge at a constant level. In addition, DYNAMIC mode focuses on a balanced system power for consistent performance during track driving, while the DYNAMIC PLUS mode delivers full system power for maximum performance on the racetrack in short burst (e.g. qualifying).

Progressive sports car cockpit, M-specific displays on the BMW Curved Display, exclusive ambience.

In addition to the M-specific control panel on the centre console, the progressive sports car cockpit in the new BMW M5 Touring features the flat-bottomed M leather steering wheel with illuminated M buttons, M multifunction seats with extensive electric adjustment options, and the BMW Curved Display, which, like the standard BMW Head-Up Display, includes M-specific content. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional also brings the BMW Maps navigation system and the Augmented View function on the control display.

An upgraded version of BMW iDrive features as standard in the new BMW M5 Touring. It is based on BMW Operating System 8.5 and designed with touch control and natural speech in mind. The digital tech now also covers the controls for the climate control functions, with temperature selection, airflow intensity, seat heating and steering wheel heating now controlled by touch screen via permanent buttons in the lower section of the control display or by voice command.

Also playing their part in the exclusive interior ambience are the standard Merino leather trim, the BMW Interaction Bar, four-zone air conditioning, heated front seats, ambient lighting with M-specific interior lighting including Welcome and Goodbye Animation. Standard specification on the new BMW M5 also includes the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, a wireless charging tray, Comfort Access, automatic tailgate operation and the charging cable Professional for charging during a journey. The options list includes the M Carbon mirror caps, an Alcantara headliner, active seat ventilation, and a trailer tow hitch.

Exterior components in carbon fibre accentuate the car’s dynamic lines and optimise its aerodynamic balance.

The expressive appearance of the new BMW M5 is shaped by its sculptural front apron and eye-catching BMW M kidney grille, as well as by prominently flared wheel arches and side skirts. The BMW M Performance Parts for the exterior fit neatly into the car’s geometry and design, and bring added emphasis to both the sedan’s dynamic lines and its powerful stature.

A highlight of the BMW M Performance Parts range for the new BMW M5 is the head-turning, two-section M Performance rear diffuser carbon fibre. It teams up with the M Performance tailpipe trims carbon fibre to bring a modern and extremely sporty look to the rear end of the high-performance sedan. The M Performance tailpipe trims are made from a titanium/carbon fibre mix. With their milled titanium end rings and embossed M5 logo, they create a suitably powerful and imposing proposition.

The M Performance rear diffuser carbon fibre is offered either as an addition to the rear spoiler included in the M Carbon exterior package or in conjunction with the M Performance rear spoiler pro carbon fibre also available as a retrofit option. This ensures precisely optimised air routing in extremely dynamic driving situations.

The M Performance front splitter carbon fibre further enhances the aerodynamic balance and visual impact of the new BMW M5. It too is available in tandem with either of the two rear spoiler variants. The two-section M Performance front splitter carbon fibre showcases the central lower air intake – which, for the first time, is split into two by a central partition – even more prominently.

Extremely wide tracks and a bespoke design for the side frame of the body give the new BMW M5 muscular proportions. The M Performance sill extensions carbon fibre lend additional emphasis to the athletic form of the car’s side view. They can be combined with the M exterior mirror caps carbon fibre to create a particularly cohesive overall impression. All of the carbon fibre attachment parts are meticulously hand-crafted from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) with a high-quality clear coat finish.

M-typical racing feeling and detail customisation.

The dynamic profile of the new BMW M5 can be further accentuated by the M Performance side decals in Frozen Black. These high-quality decals can withstand commercial car washes and again integrate seamlessly with the geometry of the M5. The M Performance aerial cover aramid – likewise constructed from an exclusive fibre composite material – brings a stylistic highlight to the car’s roof. Added to which, M Performance light-alloy wheels will be offered for the new BMW M5 from summer 2025.

The M Performance fuel tank cap carbon fibre extends the new high-performance sedan’s aura of exclusivity to a detail level and can be identified by its M Performance badging in brushed aluminium. The quartet of M Performance floor mats – each of which features decorative stitching in contrasting colours and M Performance badging – add further sporting touches to the interior. The M Performance tyre bags bring motor sport feeling to the customer’s garage, too. They are printed with a logo in BMW M GmbH colours and a graphic indicating the wheel position, and have a reinforced handle for easy transportation. The M Performance key case also makes a distinctive statement. The elegant, precisely fitting cover in black fine-grain nappa leather protects the owner’s car key against scratches and rounds off the BMW M Performance Parts line-up in stylish fashion.

The BMW M Performance Parts available for the new BMW M5 have been developed on the back of BMW M GmbH’s established motor-racing expertise and the experience it has garnered over more than five decades – and are designed precisely to fit the particular characteristics of the high-performance sports car. Plus, the retrofit products have been tested according to the BMW Group’s stringent quality guidelines and have already undergone homologation alongside the overall vehicle, which means separate registration with the vehicle licensing authorities is not required.

M HYBRID drive system in the new BMW M5: intoxicating performance, impressive electric range.

The M HYBRID drive system in the new BMW M5 brings a 4.4-litre V8 engine with classic high-revving character together with an electric motor, whose performance characteristics are tuned specifically for the M5 and which is integrated into the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. The combustion engine benefits from cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology, a cross-bank exhaust manifold and optimised oil separation. It develops maximum output of 585 hp and peak torque of 750 Nm. The electric motor delivers a maximum output of 197 hp and a nominal torque of 280 Nm. However, thanks to a pre-gearing stage, the effective torque at the transmission input is boosted to 450 Nm.

The combination of combustion engine and electric motor adheres to the same principle as the drive system in the BMW M Hybrid V8 endurance racing machine. The ability of the electric motor to generate its power instantly and the intelligently controlled interplay of the combustion engine and motor ensure the M HYBRID system responds without delay to every movement of the accelerator. The linear power delivery typical of BMW M models is found here in particularly compelling form. The eight-cylinder engine can spin to a maximum 7,200 rpm as the new BMW M5 treats its driver to the sensation of relentless power development into the upper reaches of the load and speed ranges. Top speed is limited to 155 mph as standard, but the limiter can be raised to 189 mph if the optional M Driver’s Package is specified.

The sports exhaust system fitted in the new BMW M5 underscores the performance experience with a multi-faceted and enthralling engine note. It features electrically controlled, continuously adjustable flaps and the two pairs of dual tailpipes familiar from other M models, each with 100-millimetre trims in Black Chrome.

Providing an acoustic accompaniment to the power delivery of the electric motor is BMW IconicSounds Electric. This M-specific electric drive sound provides authentic responses to movements of the accelerator when the car is operating in all-electric mode. With the relevant drive system configuration, it also generates an engaging boost track to highlight the arrival of extra electric power on top of the output from the V8 engine.

In all-electric operating mode, the new BMW M5 can hit speeds of up to 87 mph. The high-voltage battery located low in the car’s underbody has 18.6 kWh of usable energy, enabling an electric range of 42 – 43 miles (WLTP), which is unmatched by any rival. The Combined Charging Unit allows AC charging at up to 7.4 kW, and from November 2024 production, the maximum charging rate will go up to 11 kW.

The power generated by the combustion engine and electric motor is channelled to the road via the all-wheel-drive M xDrive system, with the rear-biased setup particularly pronounced in 4WD Sport mode. However, the driver can also select 2WD mode which sends power exclusively to the rear wheels with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system switched off, which will appeal to experienced drivers who prefer a pure-bred performance experience. This further developed iteration of M xDrive – like the electronically controlled Active M Differential at the rear axle – is tailored specially to the performance characteristics of the M HYBRID drive system.

Sophisticated chassis technology with M-specific tuning.

The chassis design of the new BMW M5 comprises a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle with bespoke kinematics and elastokinematics, plus a host of other specially tuned components. The electrically assisted rack-and-pinion steering with M Servotronic and variable steering ratio has a rigid connection to the front axle subframe to ensure optimal feedback from the road and a high degree of directional accuracy. In conjunction with the wide tracks and the excellent torsional rigidity of the body and chassis mountings, this combination produces the handling attributes for which BMW M models are renowned, shaped by agility, precision and the linear build-up of lateral forces.

Also fitted as standard is Adaptive M Suspension with electronically controlled dampers and Integral Active Steering, which can steer the rear wheels by up to 1.5 degrees. M-specific tuning, individually selectable settings, and the ability to adjust the dampers at each wheel independently optimise the vehicle's connection to the road. This enhances the car's versatility, offering everything from everyday driving comfort to track-ready dynamic performance. The rear-wheel steering improves directional stability at high speeds, as well as agility and comfort when manoeuvring.

Traction, agility and directional stability all benefit from near-actuator wheel slip limitation and the networking of all control systems within the integrated transverse dynamics management setup. Both the standard M Compound brakes and optional M Carbon ceramic brakes combine with an integrated braking system that presents the driver with two pedal feel settings. M light-alloy wheels (20-inch at the front axle, 21-inch at the rear) are fitted as standard.

Assistance systems for assured and comfortable driving.

The new BMW M5 offers a significantly wider selection of standard and optional systems for automated driving and parking compared to its predecessor, increasing assurance and comfort in day-to-day driving. Standard specification for the new seventh generation BMW M5 brings features such as front collision warning, Lane Departure Warning including lane return with steering assistance, the Evasion Assistant, the Attentiveness Assistant and the Speed Limit Info system. The optional Driving Assistant Professional adds Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function together with tech including the Steering and Lane Control Assistant, traffic light detection, automatic Speed Limit Assist and Active Navigation.

The new BMW M5 is equipped as standard with Parking Assistant Professional, which enables automated parking and manoeuvring over distances of up to 200 metres, controllable either from inside the car or remotely via smartphone.

Greater flexibility to personalise the driving experience.

The control panel on the centre console of the new BMW M5 houses a model-specific composition of buttons, which can be used to tailor the driving experience to individual preferences in a variety of ways. The Setup button provides direct access to the configuration of the drive system, Drivelogic, chassis, steering, braking system and M xDrive, as well as the intensity of brake energy recuperation. Two overall vehicle setups can be stored and selected quickly using the M buttons on the steering wheel. The Launch Control function is available in all the M Setup configurations, except for the M xDrive system’s 2WD mode.

Pressing the DSC button activates M Dynamic Mode, increasing the DSC intervention thresholds for brake inputs and engine power reduction. Alternatively, DSC can be switched off completely. Another button allows the driver to select M Mode. When they switch from the default ROAD setting to SPORT, interventions from the driver assistance systems are restricted to just the essential functions required for sporty driving, as is the content shown in the information display. The standard-fit M Drive Professional, also enables the use of TRACK mode, with other features including the M Laptimer and the Boost Control function, which maximises longitudinal dynamics when executing mid-range sprints and overtaking manoeuvres.

The operating mode of the M HYBRID system can also be adjusted as desired. The new M Hybrid button allows the driver to choose between HYBRID mode – for intelligently controlled interplay between the combustion engine and electric motor to maximise either efficiency or performance, depending on the driving situation – and the ELECTRIC setting, in which the combustion engine is only brought into play by accelerator kickdown or using the gearshift paddles. eCONTROL mode is used for effective brake energy recuperation and maintaining battery charge at a constant level. In addition, DYNAMIC mode focuses on a balanced system power for consistent performance during track driving, while the DYNAMIC PLUS mode delivers full system power for maximum performance on the racetrack in short burst (e.g. qualifying).

Progressive sports car cockpit, M-specific displays on the BMW Curved Display, exclusive ambience.

In addition to the M-specific control panel on the centre console, the progressive sports car cockpit in the new BMW M5 features a newly designed, flat-bottomed M leather steering wheel with illuminated M buttons, M multifunction seats with extensive electric adjustment options, and the BMW Curved Display, which, like the standard BMW Head-Up Display, includes M-specific content. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional also brings the BMW Maps navigation system and the Augmented View function on the control display.

An upgraded version of BMW iDrive features as standard in the new BMW M5. It is based on BMW Operating System 8.5 and designed with touch control and natural speech in mind. The digital tech now also covers the controls for the climate control functions, with temperature selection, airflow intensity, seat heating and steering wheel heating now controlled by touch screen via permanent buttons in the lower section of the control display or by voice command.

Also playing their part in the exclusive interior ambience are the standard Merino leather trim, the BMW Interaction Bar, four-zone air conditioning, heated front seats, ambient lighting with M-specific interior lighting including Welcome and Goodbye Animation, and the panoramic glass sunroof. Standard specification on the new BMW M5 also includes ambient lighting, the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, a wireless charging tray, Comfort Access, an alarm system, automatic tailgate operation and the charging cable Professional for charging during a journey.

The options list includes the M Carbon exterior package, an Alcantara headliner, active seat ventilation, and a trailer tow hitch. Model-specific BMW M Performance Parts will be available for the new BMW M5 from launch, with the selection to include M Performance forged light-alloy wheels and exterior components made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).

Munich. The prototypes are carefully disguised, but they cannot conceal their character as high-performance cars. The future generation of the BMW M5 has entered the practical phase of its series development process. The new high-performance sedan from BMW M GmbH is now completing its test drives on public roads, BMW Group proving grounds and racetracks around the world.

Moreover, fans of the BMW M brand can look forward to a further result of the product offensive that will continue into the year 2024. BMW M GmbH has now officially confirmed that with the new edition of the BMW M5, it will be adding a Touring variant to its model range. The perfect symbiosis of M-typical performance, uncompromising long-distance comfort and impressive spaciousness will experience a renaissance in 2024 with the new BMW M5 Touring.

Just like the future BMW M5 Sedan, the Touring variant will also feature a completely newly developed partially electrified drive system. Its M-typical performance characteristics as well as the precisely tuned chassis technology refined with innovative systems facilitate driving dynamics and agility at a level unique in this vehicle class. Thus, BMW M GmbH is steadily progressing on its path to electrification. "We are now also installing a hybrid drive system with typical M performance in other high-performance cars," says Dirk Häcker, Head of Development at BMW M GmbH.

For almost 40 years now, the BMW M5 has been the benchmark for driving dynamics, agility and precision in the high-performance sedan segment. Evolutionary progress, development know-how from racing and pioneering innovations in the areas of drive, suspension, aerodynamics and lightweight construction have shaped the history of the BMW M5. Engines with six, eight and ten cylinders, M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving characteristics, the compound brake system with M Carbon ceramic brakes and M xDrive four-wheel drive are just some of the technological milestones with which this model has repeatedly redefined top performance in a sedan that is unconditionally suitable for everyday use. The seventh generation of the BMW M5 takes up on this – with fascinating innovations for an even more intense performance experience.

The first BMW M5 Touring was launched back in 1992 based on the second-generation BMW M5 Sedan and has since stood for a combination of high performance and everyday practicality on four wheels. In 2007, BMW M GmbH also added a Touring variant to the fourth-generation BMW M5. And currently, the successful launch of the first BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive* also underscores the high appeal of this special vehicle concept in the premium midrange segment of high-performance cars.

Testing of the first prototypes of the new BMW M5 Touring is to commence in the next few days in urban traffic as well as on country roads and motorways around Munich and at the BMW M GmbH headquarters in Garching. The integrated application of all drive and suspension systems will then also be carried out for the new BMW M5 Touring on the Nürburgring's Nordschleife, among other places, with the aim of ensuring the ideal balance of sporting performance on the racetrack and superior ride comfort in everyday driving and over long distances.

BMW will celebrate the return of the Festival of Speed in 2021 with its first ever world premiere at Goodwood. The all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé will make its global debut on 8 July 2021 on the famous 1.16-mile course. Taking to the hill too will be the fastest and most powerful BMW M production car ever, the new BMW M5 CS, whilst the Festival will also provide the stage for two exciting UK premieres for the brand: the new fully electric BMW iX and BMW i4.

The all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé will continue the long tradition of BMW’s driver-oriented, compact and powerful two-door models and represents the most modern interpretation of the legendary BMW 2002. The combination of its compact dimensions, outstanding driving dynamics, optional 6-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive, as well as extrovert design will make the BMW 2 Series Coupé unique in the market. Festival goers will be able to see the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé unveiled at ‘BMW M Town’ at 09:00 and seen on the hill for the first time in the ‘First Glance’ category from 09:40.

Alongside the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé will be the BMW M5 CS, the ultimate incarnation of the BMW M5, and the most powerful production car in the history of the company. Taking BMW M performance to an unprecedented level, the 635hp 4.4-litre V8 engine powers the M5 CS from 0-62 mph in just 3.0 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 189mph.

Visitors to the Stable Yard, once again dedicated to BMW and themed as an ‘Electric Boulevard’, will see the new BMW iX in the UK for the first time. Representing the pinnacle of BMW Group’s electrification strategy, the company’s flagship electric model will launch in November 2021 and ushers in an exciting new chapter for the brand. Conceived from the outset for purely electric mobility and sustainable manufacturing techniques, the BMW iX combines locally emission-free driving pleasure and sporting agility with a highly usable operating range and luxurious spaciousness. It is also the first model to feature the new generation BMW iDrive, powered by Operating System 8.

The ‘Electric Boulevard’ will also showcase the first-ever BMW i4. This striking gran coupé introduces all-electric mobility to the heart of the BMW brand and offers a range of up to 367 miles (WLTP). The BMW i4 is a statement vehicle, which combines style, agility and comfort with zero tailpipe emissions. Due for launch in the UK in November 2021, the i4 is the first all-electric premium car from the BMW Group aimed at the traditional core of the midsize segment.

The home of the marque during the festival will be ‘BMW M Town’ – offering an unparalleled array of BMW product and experiences. Alongside the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé, the star of the stand will be the BMW M4 Competition x KITH. Limited to just 150 units worldwide and featuring unique exterior and interior design detail, this very special edition model was created in collaboration with New York lifestyle brand KITH.

Visitors to the stand, which once again is positioned trackside, will be able to see the BMW M 1000 RR, the first M model from BMW Motorrad with its genes coming directly from professional racing. Stunning iterations of new BMW R 18, including the Spirit of Passion by Kingston Custom and custom bikes from Bernhard Naumann and the Custom Works ZON team from Japan, will also be on display.

Visitors will be able to have some fun too -racing virtually, under hyper-realistic conditions, with a sim racing simulator.

Even sportier, even more luxurious, even more exclusive: BMW M GmbH is expanding its ranks of specialised performance-focused CS models with the introduction of the BMW M5 CS (fuel consumption, combined: 25.0 mpg, CO₂ emissions, combined: 256 g/km) - the most powerful production car in the history of the company.

Searingly fast yet eminently usable, the BMW M5 CS is the ultimate incarnation of the BMW M5 and it is the first time there has been a special edition of the iconic model. It blends the kind of performance you might expect of a supercar – 0-62mph achieved in only 3.0 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 189mph – with everyday usability. It is a luxury saloon equally at home on the road as it is on the racetrack.

The BMW M5 CS builds on the established presence of the BMW M3 CS, BMW M4 CS and BMW M2 CS. As the flagship model in the range, the BMW M5 CS represents the highest rung of the BMW M ladder and sets new standards, combining standout performance attributes with an exclusive and luxurious appearance.

Power is provided by a 4.4-litre V8 engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology that develops 635hp – 10hp more than in the BMW M5 Competition. Its track suitability is elevated by its lightweight design, bespoke chassis tuning and the M xDrive system, with its centralised intelligent control approach for the Active M Differential.

The M5 CS is priced at £140,780 on-the-road. Deliveries will begin in spring 2021.

The most powerful engine fitted by BMW M GmbH
The BMW M5 CS sports the most powerful engine fitted by BMW M GmbH. The 4.4-litre V8 with M TwinPower Turbo technology develops 635hp at 6,000rpm, and peak torque of 750Nm is produced from 1,800 – 5,950rpm. The high-revving nature of the eight-cylinder unit – it tops out at 7,200rpm – and strong power delivery are derived from motorsport. The engine’s characteristics can be altered at the touch of a button from the basic EFFICIENT mode to SPORT and SPORT+, the latter two further quickening the engine’s response to accelerator movements.

Equipped with the M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, the BMW M5 CS accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 3.0 seconds. The special edition needs just 10.4 seconds to reach 124mph from rest and is electronically limited to a top speed of 189mph.

**Electronically governed

Optimised chassis designed to work with track tyres
The new BMW M5 CS builds on the chassis of the BMW M5 Competition and features a seven-millimetre drop in ride-height plus shock absorbers developed for the BMW M8 Gran Coupé. As well as bringing added comfort to the driving experience, these dampers also reduce fluctuation in wheel loads, greatly improving on-the-limit handling. The bearing springs at the front and rear axle of the BMW M5 CS have been retuned and damper control has also been refined to consider the lower vehicle weight and the tyres’ increased performance potential.

The BMW M5 CS rides as standard on Pirelli P Zero Corsa track tyres measuring 275/35 R 20 at the front and 285/35 R 20 at the rear, which are fitted to 20‑inch M forged wheels in Y‑spoke design (front: 9.5 J x 20, rear: 10.5 J x 20) with a Gold Bronze finish.

Bespoke engine mounts and track-ready oil supply
The BMW M5 CS is fitted with engine mounts that have a spring rating of 900N/mm. The engine’s firm connection to the car’s structure results in rapid engine response and immediate transmission of its power to the drivetrain. The V8 engine – featuring a bespoke BMW M Power cover made from exposed carbon fibre and bearing a full-colour M logo – works with optimised turbochargers and has maximum injection pressure of 350 bar for shorter injection times and improved atomisation of fuel. Improvements have also been made to lubrication and cooling, including an oil pan with a small front sump and an indirect charge air cooling system, which is extremely effective despite taking up little space. The oil supply system uses a fully variable, map-controlled pump and has been designed for outings on the racetrack, where it can handle very high levels of longitudinal and lateral acceleration.

Distinctive M-specific soundtrack and M Sound Control button
The sports exhaust system of the M5 CS delivers a distinctive M‑specific sound that accentuates the engine’s strong production of power and appetite for revs. The dual-branch, flap-controlled system has been designed to amplify the engine note and offer sportier and clearer feedback, while ensuring it remains suitable for everyday conditions. The sound produced by the BMW M5 CS changes depending on which of the various modes affecting engine characteristics – EFFICIENT, SPORT or SPORT+ – is selected. The character of the engine note is particularly powerful in SPORT+. The driver can use the M Sound Control button at any time to soften the car’s acoustic presence – for example when driving through a residential area.

M Carbon ceramic brakes as standard
The M Carbon ceramic brakes for the BMW M5 CS deliver superb stopping power and are fitted as standard. The six-piston fixed-calliper units at the front and single-piston floating callipers at the rear sport the M logo and are painted in Red with a Gold finish available as an option. The M Carbon ceramic brakes are 23kg lighter than the M Compound brakes on the BMW M5 Competition. These brakes offer even better performance, further improved fade resistance and still higher thermal stability, combined with excellent durability.

Carbon-fibre parts contribute to significant weight saving
The bonnet of the BMW M5 CS is made entirely from lightweight CFRP. The front splitter and the exterior mirror caps - taken from the BMW M8 – together with the additional rear spoiler on the bootlid and the rear diffuser are also made from CFRP. In addition to aiding aerodynamics, these parts also contribute to a near 70kg weight reduction over the BMW M5 Competition.

The M5 CS sports exhaust system’s quartet of stainless-steel tailpipes and Gold Bronze accents add to the special edition’s exclusive exterior details. The kidney grille surround on the BMW M5 CS is finished in Gold Bronze, as are the M gills on the front wings and “M5 CS” badges on the kidney grille and bootlid. The special-edition model exclusively adds a Gold Bronze finish to the 20-inch M forged wheels in Y-spoke design. The door sill finishers come with illuminated “M5 CS” badges, while extended high-gloss Shadowline trim features on the exterior mirrors, window frame surrounds and B-pillar.

BMW Laserlights with exclusive yellow tone
The BMW M5 CS is equipped as standard with BMW Laserlight, and its light graphic has a new look. While the BMW Individual Shadowline trim with additional black shading adds a dark-tinted accent to the headlights, the L-shaped light tubes are unexpectedly versatile: as daytime driving lights and side lights, they shine in the familiar white, but when low or high beam is activated, they switch to a distinctive yellow tone that BMW M5 CS drivers can also see from the outside, when they unlock the car remotely, triggering the Welcome Light.

Duo of exclusive individual matt paint finishes
The BMW M5 CS is available in three different paint shades – Brands Hatch Grey metallic or exclusive BMW Individual matt paint finishes Frozen Deep Green metallic and Frozen Brands Hatch Grey metallic.

Race-inspired interior layout
The BMW M5 CS is both a luxurious saloon and a high-performance sports car with room for four. The interior layout – comprising four individual M Carbon bucket-style seats – is exclusive to the special-edition model.

The M Carbon seats in the front with integral head restraints and illuminated M5 logos help to reduce the car’s weight, with the contoured side bolsters for the seat cushion and backrest also providing firm lateral support. The fine-grain Merino leather covers for the front seats and their Merino leather counterparts on the exclusive individual seats in the rear come in black with eye-catching contrasting panels and decorative stitching in Mugello Red. The outline of the legendary Nürburgring circuit imprinted on the head restraints is a reminder of the car’s sporting potential. The M Carbon seats in the front are electrically adjustable for height, tilt, seat cushion length and backrest angle, while the backrest width can be altered pneumatically. They are heated as standard and the driver’s seat also comes with a memory function.

M Alcantara steering wheel and bespoke CS detailing
Further interior details hint at the sporting intent of the BMW M5 CS. The rim of the M Alcantara steering wheel is wrapped in the race-derived material from which it takes its name, while its centre-marker perforation with red background is another classic race car influence. The gearshift paddles are made from carbon fibre and the steering wheel spokes have Black Chrome trim. Elsewhere, Alcantara is also used for the headliner. A fixed lightweight cover sits atop the centre console where an armrest with opening lid can usually be found. Its black Merino leather is complemented by red double stitching. This cover, together with the absence of an oddments tray, brings about a significant weight reduction. Red “CS” badging features on the instrument panel and between the bucket-style seats in the rear. The M seat belts feature red and blue contrast stitching that pay homage to the BMW M colours. The colours also appear in an “M5” badge on the velour M floor mats with bespoke piping and in the illuminated “M5 CS” badge on the door sill finishers.

12.3-inch central display provides access to driving dynamic systems
The new operating concept for the BMW M5 featuring a 12.3-inch central display makes it easy for the driver of the BMW M5 CS to keep a clear eye on the myriad functions of the driving dynamic systems and BMW M xDrive all-wheel drive. The driver can switch swiftly between the ROAD and SPORT settings using the M Mode button. Keeping the M Mode button pressed, then confirming the prompt in the central display engages TRACK mode.

M View in the instrument cluster and Head-Up Display
Activating SPORT mode in the BMW M5 CS brings up M View in both the instrument cluster and the Head-Up Display. Here, only relevant information for performance driving – i.e. an M-specific rev dial, the shift lights, a digital speed readout and the gear currently engaged – is shown in the 12.3‑inch instrument display. Drivers can also choose to view additional information including coolant temperature, charge pressure, tyre condition and longitudinal/lateral acceleration in the instrument cluster. When M View is active, a rev counter with colour-coded warning zones appears in the Head-Up Display, while shift lights indicate the ideal time to change gear. Navigation instructions, distance warnings, current gear, vehicle speed and any speed limits or overtaking restrictions detected by the Speed Limit Info system are also displayed here.

Setup button takes drivers straight to the configuration menu
Pressing the Setup button positioned above the M Mode button takes the driver straight to the central display’s menu for programming an individual configuration for the powertrain and chassis options. This allows drivers to tailor the car’s setup to the driving situation at hand and their personal preferences. Simplified operation using the touchscreen display or iDrive Controller makes it easy to choose different settings for the engine, suspension, steering and M xDrive system. The two red-painted M1 and M2 buttons next to the gearshift paddles on the M Alcantara steering wheel make it possible to change quickly between setups. Drivers can use these buttons to compose two individual setups with their choice of M xDrive, DSC, engine, transmission, damper and steering characteristics, as well as their desired M View configuration in the Head-Up Display.

M xDrive and driving dynamics components are individually configurable
The driver can individually configure both the M xDrive system and all the driving dynamics components to tailor the BMW M5 CS handling characteristics to their preference. The M xDrive system’s rear-wheel-biased setup gives the car exceptional agility. In addition, the driver can vary the distribution of power between front and rear wheels, and also adjust the responses of the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system. As well as 4WD and 4WD Sport, drivers have the choice of 2WD mode for pure rear-wheel drive. This allows skilled owners to enjoy the driving experience offered by past generations of the BMW M5.

The Variable Damper Control (VDC) system offers the COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ driving modes. COMFORT focuses on broad-based everyday usability and familiar M comfort, combined with standout dynamics. SPORT mode reduces wheel and body movements to create more direct contact with the road, but still has sufficient comfort dialled in. This setting is suited perfectly to sporty driving on country roads and offers the ideal handling profile for laps of the Nürburgring. SPORT+ mode maximises performance on smooth asphalt, such as dedicated race circuits, with wheel and body movements minimised.

Advanced digital services: BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, Smartphone Integration and Remote Software Upgrade
The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional brings in the latest BMW Operating System 7 and a host of digital services as standard.  
The M5 CS includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with the latest extended functionality. This technology learns routines, habits and preferences to help the driver get the best out of the in-car functionality. Smartphone Integration is offered as standard, without any runtime limitations, and is now compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Also offered on the M5 CS is the Remote Software Upgrade functionality that keeps the vehicle up to date with the latest software. All updates can be imported over the air, either on a smartphone via BMW Connected or directly into the car using its built-in SIM card. Installation is much like a smartphone update. The content of the upgrades can vary, from new software services to improved vehicle functions and the possibility to purchase additional technology via the BMW ConnectedDrive online store.

The arrival of the new BMW M5 Competition sees the high-performance saloon from BMW M GmbH returning to the stage in its sharpest and most performance-focused form to date.

Fusing a high-revving, 625hp 4.4-litre V8 turbocharged engine with a finely-tuned chassis that incorporates new dampers, the BMW M5 Competition delivers the everyday usability and comfort of an executive saloon twinned with driving pleasure and exceptional on-track ability.

With its unrivalled package including newly introduced features such as M Mode and a central information display enlarged to 12.3 inches, the BMW M5 Competition is a more compelling proposition than ever.

The BMW M5 Competition is priced from £102,325 OTR.

High-revving engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology
At the heart of the BMW M5 Competition is a 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. The high-revving, eight-cylinder unit develops 625hp at 6,000rpm. Peak torque of 750Nm is on tap between 1,800 and 5,860rpm. The characteristics of the V8 can be altered at the touch of a button from the EFFICIENT mode to SPORT and SPORT+, the latter two further enhancing the engine’s response to movements of the accelerator. The BMW M5 Competition sprints from 0-62mph in 3.3 seconds, with 0-124mph achieved in 10.8 seconds.

Top speed is 155mph – or 189mph with the optional M Driver’s Package specified.

Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic
The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission enables short shift times and fast, precise responses to every nudge of the accelerator. The Drivelogic switch on the gear selector allows three modes for efficient, sporty or dynamically intense track driving with rapid gearshifts. The driver can use both the selector lever and the shift paddles on the steering wheel to take control of gear changes manually. In manual mode, they can also execute multiple downshifts to the lowest available gear, for instance when braking into tight corners. Additionally, there are no automatic upshifts when the engine is revved to the limit.

M xDrive with rear-wheel bias ensures exceptional agility
The centrally controlled interaction between the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and the Active M Differential helps to effectively channel the engine’s output to the car’s wheels and generates enough extra traction to achieve acceleration times worthy of a super-sports car.

The engine’s torque is variably distributed between the front and rear wheels via the transfer case’s electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, before the Active M Differential splits it again between the two rear wheels, as appropriate. The rear-wheel-biased setup of M xDrive provides the BMW M5 Competition with standout agility. In addition, the driver can vary the distribution of power between front and rear wheels themselves, and also adjust the responses of the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system.

M Dynamic Mode (MDM) holds the key to controlled drifts and entertaining handling, and offers another three modes (with DSC deactivated) which have been optimised for track driving: as well as 4WD and 4WD Sport, drivers also have the choice of 2WD mode (also automatically disabling DSC) for the traditional BMW M5 rear-wheel drive experience.

New suspension dampers
The BMW M5 Competition has a specially tuned chassis, which includes double-wishbone front suspension and five-link rear suspension. It benefits from experience gained in the development of the new BMW M8 Competition Gran Coupé.

The electronically-controlled Variable Damper Control (VDC) system offers three driving modes – COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+. COMFORT mode focuses on everyday usability and familiar M comfort, combined with standout dynamics. SPORT mode, meanwhile, reduces wheel and body movements to create more direct contact with the road, but still has sufficient comfort dialled in. SPORT+ mode maximises dynamic performance on smooth asphalt such as race tracks, with wheel and body movements minimised.

The M Servotronic steering gives drivers the choice of COMFORT mode for greater ease of use and lightness – in town driving and on short journeys, for example – and SPORT mode, where greater steering force is required and feedback through the wheel increases noticeably.

The amount of camber at the front axle enhances the car’s ability to absorb lateral forces through high-speed corners, while fitting the toe links with ball joints instead of rubber mounts has resulted in highly precise wheel guidance at the rear axle. The high spring rate of the rear anti-roll bar allows the body roll that occurs through high-speed corners to be distributed with a pronounced rear bias.

The BMW M5 Competition is fitted with forged, bi-colour, 20-inch M light-alloy wheels in Y-spoke design (front: 9.5J x 20, rear: 10.5J x 20) and mixed-size tyres (front: 275/35R 20, rear: 285/35R 20).

M Performance Parts include coilover suspension and carbon-fibre components
The M Performance chassis from the extensive M Performance Parts range brings the BMW M5 Competition an even sportier and more individual setup. The drop in ride height of between 5 and 20 millimetres enabled by the coilover suspension results in a lower centre of gravity, which reduces body roll and enables higher cornering speeds. Damper adjustment is independent for compression and rebound. Among the other items available from the M Performance Parts range are exclusive aerodynamic components produced from high-quality carbon fibre.

Bespoke engine mounts
Another notable feature of the BMW M5 Competition is its bespoke engine mounts, which have a spring rate of 900N/mm. The engine’s firm connection to the vehicle’s structure is clearly noticeable, resulting in extremely fast engine response and immediate transmission of its power to the drivetrain. The stiffness of the mounts also helps the car turn into corners with greater precision.

Oil supply system designed for track driving
The V8 engine utilises optimised turbochargers and maximum injection pressure of 350 bar. This allows shorter injection times and improved atomisation of fuel, for faster engine response as well as more efficient mixture preparation. Improvements have also been made to lubrication and cooling, including an oil pan with a small front sump and an indirect charge air cooling system. The oil supply system uses a fully variable, map-controlled pump and has been designed for the demands of track use.

Flap-controlled exhaust system delivers a high-impact soundtrack
The BMW M5 Competition is fitted with the M Sport dual-branch and flap-controlled M Sport exhaust system, which develops a highly distinctive and sporty note. Its sound can be varied via the different engine modes, with the soundtrack of SPORT+ mode being particularly powerful, although a much more understated engine note can also be implemented at a touch of the M Sound Control button in the centre console.

M Compound brakes fitted as standard
The BMW M5 Competition is equipped with M Compound brakes, which are significantly lighter than conventional cast iron items. At the front, there are perforated, inner-vented brake discs with six-piston fixed callipers featuring the M logo. The rear brakes feature single-piston callipers with an integrated parking brake. For the very first time, the standard callipers are finished in a high-gloss red finish – customers can opt to switch to a blue or black finish at no additional cost. Whereas the optional M Carbon ceramic brakes are recognisable from the gold-coloured callipers with M logo (six-piston fixed callipers at the front, single-piston floating callipers at the rear) and are 23kgs lighter than the standard items. These uprated brakes provide even better braking performance, blending high fade resistance and thermal stability with hardwearing durability.

Purposeful exterior design embellished with the BMW M insignia
A host of BMW M-specific design features distinguish the high performance version from other BMW 5 Series models. The bonnet hewn from aluminium, the front side panels with the signature M gills and the roof made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) create a striking look while also producing substantial weight savings.

The newly designed BMW kidney grille featured on the BMW 5 Series has a more upright appearance and drops down further into the front apron. On the BMW M5 Competition, it features a black surround, M-specific double fins and a black M5 Competition badge.

The front apron has been revised with bolder contouring and larger air intakes at the sides, with a large central, hexagonal-shaped intake incorporating the oil cooler together with the radar sensor for the Active Cruise Control (ACC) system. The front end is completed with new Adaptive LED headlights coupled with high-beam assist as standard, which feature distinctive L-shaped light tubes searing in narrow streaks towards the kidney grille. The new BMW Individual lights Shadowline, which is also standard, adds a dark-tinted accent to the Adaptive LED Headlights or optional BMW Laserlights.

M gills on the sides and the streamlined M exterior mirrors, both also finished in High-gloss black, add to the car’s exclusive design features. At the rear, there’s a new apron with a large diffuser and black inserts, while restyled LED lights provide a fresh take on the familiar BMW L shape with their precise light graphic and three-dimensional feel. The boot also has a High-gloss Black finish spoiler and black M5 Competition badging. Completing the exterior are M-specific twin tailpipes, now with thinner, more precise sidewalls, in striking Black Chrome.

New colours and a new wheel design
BMW M5 Competition customers can choose from several new paint finishes. The new high-performance saloon is now also available in the standard Brands Hatch Grey, Bluestone and Motegi Red metallic finishes. The BMW Individual selection of paint finishes adds new Tanzanite Blue metallic and Aventurine Red metallic shades. Finally, the Champagne Quartz metallic finish has been renamed Alvit Grey metallic. Meanwhile, light-alloy wheel options now also include the 20-inch M double-spoke items in polished Orbit Grey.

M Multifunction seats in Merino leather upholstery
Both the driver and front passenger in the BMW M5 Competition enjoy standard M Multifunction seats with illuminated M5 logos in the head restraints and are finished in the highest quality Merino leather. The heated seats offer electric adjustment of various settings, including the seat cushion depth, plus pneumatic backrest width adjustment to provide optimum lateral support under hard driving and a memory function for the driver’s seat. 

Larger display and new operating concept
The introduction of a new operating concept and a larger central display with a diagonal of 12.3 inches makes it even easier to keep a clear eye on the myriad functions associated with the driving dynamic systems and BMW M xDrive all-wheel drive. Two new buttons on the centre console – like those found in the BMW M8 – provide more direct access to system settings and the various readouts in the instrument cluster and Head‑Up Display.

At the press of the M Mode button, the driver can switch swiftly between the ROAD and SPORT settings. Keeping the M Mode button pressed, then confirming the prompt in the central display, engages TRACK mode.

From ROAD to SPORT at the touch of a button
In the default ROAD setting, all the standard and optional driver assistance systems are fully activated. With the SPORT setting engaged, the active driver assistance systems only transmit alerts on speed limits and overtaking restrictions, for example. This mode allows all interventions in the braking and steering systems to be disabled, aside from those made by the collision warning with braking function and the Evasion Assistant. SPORT mode also switches both the instrument cluster and the Head-Up Display to M View. Here, only relevant information for sporty driving is shown in the 12.3‑inch instrument display. Drivers can also choose to view additional information on coolant temperature, charge pressure, tyre condition and longitudinal/lateral acceleration in the right- and left-hand areas of the instrument cluster.

The BMW M5 Competition’s TRACK mode is designed exclusively for use on race circuits and deactivates all the comfort and safety functions of the driver assistance systems. The audio system is also muted and the central display switched off, while the instrument cluster switches to M View and the Head‑Up Display dispenses with readouts from the driver assistance systems. Automatic activation of the hazard warning lights in response to emergency braking is suppressed and the collision warning system is also deactivated.

Two viewing modes in the Head-Up Display
When M View is active in Sport mode, a prominently positioned rev counter with coloured warning zones appears in the Head-Up Display, while shift lights indicate the ideal time to change gear. Navigation instructions, distance warnings, the current gear, the vehicle speed, and any speed limits or overtaking restrictions detected by the Speed Limit Info system are also shown here. In the default ROAD mode, the Head‑Up Display then reverts to the normal BMW 5 Series layout with M-specific typography, and the instrument display shows a new-look standard view.

New setup button takes drivers straight to the configuration menu

Wide choice of driver assistance systems
All of the driver assistance systems from the BMW 5 Series are also available for the BMW M5 Competition. The Driving Assistant system is included as standard, as is Parking Assistant Plus, which enables the driver to create a 360° image of the vehicle and its surroundings from different perspectives in the Control Display.  As part of optional Driving Assistant Professional system, updates to Steering and Lane Control Assistants are included, which in turn introduces Active Navigation. This system uses navigation data to spot in advance when a lane change will be required, and this can then be performed simply in advance notice, using the Lane Change Assistant. 

The newly standard Parking Assistant Plus’s range of functions has been extended with the addition of the reversing assistant, which takes control of the steering while reversing for distances of up to 50 metres.

The new Drive Recorder feature is also standard on the BMW M5 Competition for the first time, which when coupled with Parking Assistant Plus, uses its in-built cameras to record video footage from different points around the vehicle, before storing the recordings so they can be either watched later on the control display or exported via the USB port.

Harman/Kardon, Head-Up Display and adaptive LED headlights are also offered as standard as well as M seat belts, full Merino leather, Anthracite Alcantara headliner and seat heating for both front seats.

Extensive options list includes the Ultimate Package
Customers of the BMW M5 Competition can tailor the car to their own individual tastes with a host of option packages that add even more refinement, convenience, style, safety and performance.

Technology Plus, offering Driving Assistant Professional and Comfort Plus, which includes front and rear seat heating, steering wheel heating, soft close doors and massage functionality are both available optionally. M Drivers pack which offers customers M Carbon ceramic brakes and M Drivers Package is also available optionally.

At the top of the list is the aptly named Ultimate Pack, which consists of a multitude of upgrades that combine to enhance the BMW M5 Competition in every area. The Ultimate Package adds 14 options that span the exclusive M Carbon engine cover to the M Driver’s Package and the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System to soft closed doors.

Munich. 35 years ago, BMW Motorsport GmbH created a new vehicle category. The first high-performance sedan combined the driving dynamics of a sports car with the comfort and functionality of a top-of-the-range 4-door vehicle. Given the name of BMW M5 and powered by an in-line 6-cylinder engine from the mid-engine sports car BMW M1, the new model started an impressive career in which it is currently the BMW M5 Competition (combined fuel consumption: 10.6 – 10.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 241 – 238 g/km) that sets the pace. Today the BMW M5 is the world’s most successful high-performance sports sedan, continuing to draw its fascination from the racing expertise of the company that is known today as BMW M GmbH. To mark this anniversary, BMW M GmbH presents a special edition of the BMW M5 which has the most powerful engine in the model's history under the bonnet – with an output of 460 kW/625 hp – along with a range of thrilling design and equipment features. The BMW M5 Edition 35 Years will be produced in a limited series of 350 units and will be available worldwide from July 2019.

Over six generations, the driving dynamics potential of the BMW M5 has continuously increased, but the high-performance sedan has constantly remained faithful to its character. As an independent model based on the BMW 5 Series, it offers that crucial extra in terms of performance that authentically expresses a passion for racing. The high-revving concept of the engine, the distinctive suspension technology harmonised perfectly with the high level of engine power and the M specific design features to optimise cooling air intake and aerodynamic properties guarantee driving properties that are defined by maximum dynamic performance, agility and precision – as is typical of the BMW M5.

Anniversary edition with exclusive BMW Individual fittings.

The resulting M feeling and the exclusive character of the high-performance sports sedan come to life with particular intensity in the BMW M5 Edition 35 Years. The point of departure for the configuration of the Edition model is provided by the BMW M5 Competition, in which racing-inspired performance reaches a whole new dimension in a sedan. This is due to the V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo Technology, a maximum output of 460 kW/625 hp and a maximum torque of 750 Nm along with the particularly direct engine connection, the distinctively configured suspension technology, the all-wheel drive system M xDrive and the Active M Differential in the rear axle transmission. The driving experience offered by the BMW M5 Competition is defined by powerful thrust, optimum traction, outstanding ride stability and handling that can be controlled precisely at all times. It completes the sprint from standing to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds, passing the 200-km/h mark after 10.8 seconds.

The exterior and interior of the BMW M5 Edition 35 Years are as impressive as its driving performance figures. Particularly high-quality M design features developed especially for the Edition model and BMW Individual fittings give the vehicle the status of an exclusive collector’s item. Its striking appearance is particularly ensured by the BMW Individual special finish in Frozen Dark Grey metallic which has a special pigmentation to create a silk matt surface impression Newly designed 20-inch M light alloy wheels in Y spoke design and the colour Graphite Grey were created exclusively for the Edition model. In addition, the calipers of the standard M compound brake system are finished in high-gloss black. The M carbon ceramic brake system is optionally available with brake calipers finished in gold.

In addition to M multifunction seats and the BMW Individual Merino full leather trim in black with beige contrast seams, particularly exclusive interior flair is created by the trim finishers in aluminium carbon structure gold anodized – which is presented here for the first time. These finely structured, exclusively shimmering surfaces are to be found in the area of the instrument panel, the door trim sections and the centre console. Door sill finishers bearing the inscription “M5 Edition 35 Jahre” and a lasing engraving with the inscription “M5 Edition 35 Jahre 1/350” on the cupholder cover in the centre console are further distinguishing marks of the Edition vehicles.

The BMW M5: at the top of its segment for 35 years.

With its technology and design, the BMW M5 Edition 35 Years provides a particularly authentic embodiment of the philosophy on which the concept of the high-performance sedan is based. The engine, power transmission, suspension and design of the BMW M5 have always formed a carefully harmonised package. Constant engine power delivery across a wide engine speed range is just as much a hallmark feature as the car's agile and safe handling properties on the road, its thrilling driving dynamics on the race track and its stylishly understated appearance.

Even the first generation of the BMW M5 was remarkably inconspicuous, with an appearance that seemed virtually identical to the basic model. This made its engine properties all the more spectacular. The in-line 6-cylinder engine, taken from the BMW M1 and slightly modified, delivered 210 kW/286 hp – 9 hp more than in the legendary mid-engine sports car due to optimised digital engine electronics. “The suspension must always be faster than the engine” – this was the guiding principle for BMW M automobiles at the time, which was why the BMW M5 was given a tightened sports suspension and a high-performance brake system in addition to a reinforced five-speed transmission and a differential lock in the rear axle transmission with a 25 per cent locking effect.

The second generation of the BMW M5 also featured a stylish look: it initially went on the road with an output of 232 kW/315 hp and from 1992 onwards with 250 kW/340 hp. It now included such features as a standard self-levelling suspension on the rear axle to ensure the characteristic balance between race track performance and supreme everyday comfort. In the third generation of the BMW M5 launched in 1998, the two now typical twin rear exhaust pipes first provided a discreet indication of the model’s outstanding engine performance. In addition, the V8 engine with 294 kW/400 hp now required considerably enlarged cooling air inlets at the front. The fourth edition of the BMW M5 featured an impressive engine that was even more spectacular than before: a 10-cylinder power unit derived from Formula 1 developed a maximum output of 373 kW/507 hp. In addition, the V10 took the high-revving concept of the M engines to a new extreme – with more than 8 000 rpm and a highly impressive sound.

With the return to the V8 engine in the fifth generation of the BMW M5, 2011 also saw the introduction of turbo technology. Two turbochargers arranged in the V space between the cylinder benches and a cross-cylinder-bench exhaust manifold were the highlights of the high-revving engine with an output of 412 kW/560 hp, whose power was tamed among other things by 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and an Active Differential Lock at the rear axle. The sixth and latest chapter of the BMW M5 success story is once again defined by a V8 engine. With the new power unit, output is increased to 441 kW/600 hp – in the BMW M5 Competition to as high as 460 kW/625 hp. For the first time, the intelligent all-wheel drive system M xDrive contributes to ensuring that engine power goes onto the road with maximum supremacy. It introduces a whole new level of driving dynamics and ensures that the latest and most powerful BMW M5 is easy for the driver to control – even when driven in sporty style and at high output levels.

Munich/Paris. The BMW 3 Series Sedan is the Munich-based premium carmaker’s most successful model range worldwide and embodies the core of the BMW brand. The world premiere of the seventh-generation sports sedan is the highlight of the Mondial de l’Automobile 2018 show in Paris. And it will celebrate its global debut alongside an array of other new models at the press conference taking place at 9.00 a.m. CET on Tuesday, 2 October 2018. The venue for the press conference will be BMW’s stand upstairs in Hall 5.

At 4.00 p.m. CET the same day, also at the BMW stand, media representatives will be given exclusive insights into the design highlights, new technological features and innovations in the field of connectivity which shape the character of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan. Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW AG Harald Krüger, Board members Pieter Nota (Sales and Brand BMW), Klaus Fröhlich (Development) and Dr Nicolas Peter (Finance), plus a host of experts from various Development departments will be available for in-depth discussions about the new BMW 3 Series Sedan under the banner “Get Together – Get Your Story”.

The Mondial de l’Automobile 2018 is also hosting the show premieres of the new BMW Z4 and new BMW 8 Series Coupe, and the world premieres of the fourth-generation BMW X5 and new BMW M5 Competition (fuel consumption combined: 10.8 – 10.7 l/100 km [26.2 – 26.4 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 246 – 243 g/km).

 The BMW M5 is the original model that started the high performance super saloon genre. Now an all-new sixth generation of the BMW M5 Saloon, will launch in February 2018 equipped with an enhanced V8 engine, a new M-specific, all-wheel drive system known as M xDrive and performance statistics that surpass all previous incarnations.

Key to this heightened level of performance is the introduction of M xDrive and its adaptability thanks to a central control module and the variety of different dynamic modes that can be selected. When first started, the car is in four-wheel-drive mode with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) switched on. But it comes with various driving dynamics modes, up to a track-friendly pure rear-wheel drive without DSC.

Power comes from the latest 4.4-litre V8 engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology. It delivers a maximum torque of 750Nm, accelerating the new M5 from zero to 62mph in just 3.4 seconds, making it the fastest M5 yet. Power is transferred to the road via a new eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

All of this performance is wrapped in a design that adheres to the form follows function mantra of all BMWs. The front design serves to splice the oncoming air in the most aerodynamic fashion while at the same time providing the breathing and cooling requirements for a 600hp engine and its braking system, and the downforce required of a high performance saloon.

Engines and Transmission 
Thanks to various tuning enhancements, the latest BMW M5’s 4.4-litre V8 M TwinPower Turbo is more powerful than ever. It develops a maximum torque of 750Nm from just 1,800rpm through to 5,600rpm – a 70Nm increase over the previous M5.

The engine characteristics can be changed by pushing the Drive Performance from the basic setting ‘Efficient’ to ‘Sport’ and ‘Sport Plus’, both of which provide a faster turbo response.

BMW’s M engineers have developed new turbochargers and a higher injection pressure of up to 350bar. This allows shorter injection times and better fuel atomisation, making it both faster and more efficient.

Improved lubrication and cooling systems include an oil pan with a small front silencer and an indirect charge air cooler, which is more powerful than its predecessor, despite its smaller size. The oil supply, which is operated by a variable pump, is designed for racing track applications and allows high G acceleration with no risk of oil starvation.

The exhaust manifolds have also been modified to ensure the best transfer of exhaust gas energy into the two turbochargers. Through the use of a resonator between the two rear silencers, the M engineers have also reduced the car’s mass. The exhaust note is flap-controlled and is influenced by the different driving modes to enhance the driving experience further. An M Sound Control button allows the driver to reduce noise levels at the push of a button.

Power is transmitted to the road via the newly developed M xDrive all-wheel drive system. M xDrive brings the front wheels into play only when the rear wheels reach their limits of adhesion.

The main components of M xDrive are based on the intelligent all-wheel drive BMW xDrive system and Active M differential, controlled by a central M-specific vehicle dynamics control system. The drivetrain is stiffer and stronger than the previous model, while the transfer case constantly controls the torque distribution between the front and rear axles. The Active M differential splits distribution of the drive between the rear wheels. With M xDrive, the DSC intervenes only when necessary in extreme situations, so that the high engine power can be converted almost without power loss.

Enthusiastic drivers can configure M xDrive at any time according to their needs. In the default setting with DSC and 4WD switched on, the new M5 is similar to the typical M rear-wheel drive dynamic characteristics when accelerating out of a corner. At the same time, the car remains forgiving. The superior traction of the all-wheel drive system also provides impressive acceleration values from zero to 62mph in just 3.4 seconds and zero to 124mph in just 11.1 seconds.

If the driver switches to M Dynamic mode (MDM, 4WD Sport), the M5 becomes sharper and more agile. More torque is fed to the rear axle and the rear wheels give more wheel slippage. This allows controlled drifts and playful handling, but with controlled oversteer.

The pure rear-wheel-drive 2WD mode is designed for track use by experienced drivers and is dedicated entirely to pure driving pleasure without restrictive control systems.

The new eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic has extremely quick shift times and optimises change points to deliver the best performance. Thanks to a higher final drive ratio, the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission also delivers reduced fuel consumption.

It allows fully automatic shifting in “D” mode and sequential switching in “S” mode. This is possible both with the new short gear selection switch on the centre console as well as via M-shift paddles on the steering wheel.

The shift characteristics of the gearbox can be changed via the Drivelogic gear shift lever on the gear selector. Drivelogic Mode 1 stands for efficient driving with comfort shift times. Mode 2 supports fast driving with shortened shift times. Mode 3 is optimised for track driving with extremely short shift times. Those who prefer manual shifting in “S” mode can also make multiple downshifts to the lowest possible gear, for example when braking into tight corners. An integrated oil cooler ensures the gearbox is protected even when used on the racetrack.

Superior chassis technology - A new era of driving dynamics.
BMW’s M engineers made great driving dynamics and the best possible stability their goal in the chassis development of the new M5. Much of the testing took place on the in-house race track in Miramas in France, as well as on the toughest chassis test track in the world, the Nordschleife of the famous Nürburgring.

The precision and agility of previous M5 generations have been further developed for the new M5. Features include M xDrive, eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, M-specific variable damper control (three driving modes: Comfort, Sport, SportPlus) with electronically controlled shock absorbers and M Servotronic steering (three driving modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus).

The electromechanical M Servotronic steering system provides the right steering torque for every driving situation. The new M5 has incredible turn-in, coupled to excellent steering feedback, yet in city and short-distance traffic it adapts to offer low steering forces during manoeuvring and parking.

The double crossbar axle, seen on the BMW 5 Series Saloon, was significantly revised for use in the M5. BMW M engineers have re-designed all components leading to even greater driving stability.

The five-bar rear axle has also been adapted to M-specific requirements. New steering systems with stiffer rubber pads also meet the increased demands on driving dynamics and steering precision, such as harder stabilisers and lower, stiffer anti-roll bars. The rear axle has an elastomer bearing, specially developed for the M5. An additional steel cross strut and an aluminium cross brace increase the stiffness of the rear axle and improve its response.

Also not visible from the outside, but still critical to the car’s handling, are other bodywork measures. For example, a domed aluminium front panel reinforces the front of the vehicle as well as the two front struts.

The tyres were developed especially for the M5 too, with 275/435 R20s at the front and 285/30 R20s at the rear. They are mounted on light-metal cast Double-spoke bicolour wheels. These wheels are also optionally available in Jet black.

Brake pads have been developed using a special M compound, characterised by significantly lower weight compared to conventional cast iron brakes. At the front and rear, perforated and internally ventilated brake discs are mounted within blue-painted six-piston callipers with a distinctive M logo designation.

M Carbon ceramic brakes are also available as an option, distinguished by matt Gold-coloured callipers with M logo designation. These are 23kg, increasing driving dynamics and suspension comfort, among other things. BMW M Carbon ceramic brakes have even better performance, less fade and improved thermal stability.

Sporty design where form follows function.
The design of the new BMW M5 is specific to M. For example, the completely redesigned front bumper with its enlarged air openings has the task of supplying the cooling systems and brakes with sufficient cooling even in race track applications. The track width is greater than the car’s predecessor, the front wings are aluminium for weight reduction and carry characteristic M-sport cooling gills.

The bonnet is also made of aluminium, while the roof consists of a very light and stable carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) - the first time such an innovation has been used in a BMW M5.

The rear diffuser was also redesigned, while the M-specific rear apron and the M rear spoiler, coupled to purposeful sill panels, all enhance the sporty and powerful appearance of the M5. The exterior mirrors are also M-specific and designed dynamically. The hexagonal, central air intake is not only separate from the side air intakes, but also integrates the oil cooler – a beautiful combination of form and function.

The interior focuses entirely on the driver. Absolute control under all driving conditions is the maxim. At the same time, the new M5 offers space for up to four passengers, a large boot and high levels of comfort akin to those of the 5-Series saloon, combining the best of both worlds as a high-performance sports car and business vehicle.

Equipment without compromise - The driver is the focus.
The M5 enjoys tremendous levels of standard equipment, all geared towards driving dynamics. The focal point is the driver's seat, from which all switches and buttons can be operated in an ergonomically designed way.

All vehicle functions are located directly in the driver's field of vision. The large digital display from the BMW 5-Series was reconfigured specifically for M. It informs the driver about dynamic modes, the all-wheel drive M xDrive and the Drivelogic setting. The speed warning alarm is adjustable and shift lights inform the driver when it is the optimal time to change gear in manual shift mode. The data can also be reflected in the head-up display.

Almost all of the dynamics systems can be configured via the central touch-screen display, centre console button and M-Sport steering wheel. The central information display also has a gesture control.

The M5 is now started with a red start button, marking out its sporting intentions, while two red lacquered buttons M1 and M2 next to the shift paddles on the M multifunction steering wheel control the driving settings, including xDrive and DSC, as well as engine, transmission, damper and steering characteristics, plus the head-up display.

The M multifunctional seats are now offered as standard and provide better support in the shoulder area. With its racing cup shape and the more pronounced side edges of seat and backrest, the M multifunctional seat offers even greater lateral support for keen drivers, with an illuminated M5 logo, finished in Fine grain Merino leather. The seats feature electric adjustment, seat heating, and a memory function. The seat depth can be electrically adjusted, along with the seat backrest width to offer the best lateral support to all shapes and sizes of driver.

The new M5 is available in a variety of exterior colours, some of which are exclusively reserved for the model. A brand new shade is Marina Bay blue metallic, an intense blue colour. Also available on request are matt colours such as Frozen Dark Silver or Frozen Arctic Grey.

The M Driver’s Package is offered as an option and increases the top speed of the BMW M5 Saloon from 155mph to 190mph. In addition to this, owners are invited to participate in BMW M Intensive Training, a course offered through the BMW Driving Experience Centre. This can be facilitated in the UK or in Germany at several different race circuits.

In the best tradition.
For more than 30 years, the M5 has been the epitome of the ultimate sports saloon. Launched in 1984, it was always a car that hid its amazing sporting capabilities behind a discreet yet powerful exterior. The latest model embodies that spirit and takes it yet further.

1984: BMW M5 E28S.
The first generation M5 (Type E28S) was introduced in the autumn of 1984. It was powered by a 24-valve six-cylinder 3.5-litre engine with 286PS, from the mid-engined M1 sports car. The engine was equipped with a single-butterfly valve system and accelerated the first M5 from a standstill to 62mph in just 6.5 seconds with a top speed of 152mph. It was the fastest four-door production saloon of its time.

1988: BMW M5 E34S / E34 / 5S.
With the second generation M5, launched in 1988, BMW Motorsport GmbH once again created a hero. Its 3.6-litre engine developed 315PS and for the first time reached 155mph. In the second generation E34, the displacement increased to 3.8-litres and the output to 340PS. From 1992, a Touring version appeared, of which only 900 were made.

1998: BMW M5 E39S.
The third generation M5, the E39S, was as discreet as its predecessors. Underneath the bonnet, though, it packed a 5.0-litre 32-valve V8 engine, with an incredible 400PS sent through the rear wheels and 500Nm of torque. Top speed was limited to 155mph, with zero to 62mph in just 5.3 seconds.

2005: BMW M5 E60 / E61.
With the fourth generation M5, the E60, BMW developed a new 5.0-litre V10 engine with 507PS, delivered at an astonishing 7,750rpm. It did the zero to 62mph sprint in just 4.7 seconds and again was limited to 155mph. In some markets, the M5 driver was able to cancel the maximum speed limit with the new M Drivers Package - so the M5 went as fast as 189mph. Also new was the automated Sequential M Transmission (SMG) with seven gears and Launch Control for maximum acceleration.

2010: BMW M5 F10M.
The fifth generation BMW M5 came under the F10M type designation in 2011 and had the first generation of the current 4.4-litre V8-Biturbo. With 560PS, the performance had almost doubled that of the first M5. The 680Nm maximum torque also represented almost double (E28S: 340Nm). Thanks to M TwinPower Turbo technology, the M5 sprinted to 62mph in 4.3 seconds, via a new 7-speed M twin-clutch transmission. Its unrestricted top speed was 189mph.
In 2013 came the M5 with Competition Package, a variant with 575PS. In 2014, the special 30th anniversary model with 600PS came along, of which only 300 were built.

2017: BMW M5 F90.
With the new BMW M5 (Type F90), BMW M is continuing a success story that began over 30 years ago and is based on a seemingly simple recipe: luxury through the highest level of performance and comfort.

Munich. Innovative high-performance cars for safety at the highest level of motorcycle racing: the BMW M GmbH has remained true to this principle throughout nearly 20 years of partnership with the MotoGP organizer Dorna Sports, and as the “Official Car of MotoGP”. That is especially true of the new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car, which the company from Munich is presenting as the next highlight in the Safety Car fleet. The new course car is based on the high-performance sedan BMW M5 (combined consumption: 10.5 l/100 km*; combined CO2 emissions: 241 g/km*), which was showcased to the global public for the first time in August. The new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car will debut at the MotoGP season finale in Valencia, Spain (10^th to 12^th November) and will speerhead the Safety Car fleet in the 2018 season.

“A MotoGP Safety Car faces enormous challenges. It is vital to lead a field of unique, high-performance race prototypes safely through all sorts of conditions,” said Frank van Meel, President of BMW M GmbH. “Innovative motorsport technology is an essential part of this. The new BMW M5 forms the perfect basis for a safety car, as its technical features ensure perfect handling, even at the limits of driving dynamics - on the road and on the racetrack. The features in question include the newly-developed M-specific all-wheel drive M xDrive, which is being used in the BMW M5 for the first time. With precise handling and perfect traction, this guarantees optimised driving dynamics in all manner of situations. The heart of the BMW M5, the 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, has been completely overhauled by the M engineers. It represents another significant increase in performance compared to previous models, with 441 kW/600 HP and maximum torque of 750 Nm in the production M5. The new BMW M5 only needs 3.4 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. Transmission is provided by the new eight-speed M Steptronic gearbox with Drivelogic. The chassis contains M-specific kinematics and elastokinematics elements that contribute to optimised driving dynamics. The weight also plays an important role in performance. This has been reduced further through features such as the lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof.

Painstaking manual work at the BMW M Manufaktur in Garching converted the high-performance base car into the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car, preparing it to appear as the course car in the world’s fastest motorcycle racing series. This process included the addition of numerous BMW M Performance Parts, many of which are available as retrofit parts for the BMW M5 production model. These emphasise the sporty appearance of the Safety Car and meet all the functional requirements for aerodynamics, cooling and lightweight construction. These include various carbon components such as side sills, rear diffusor, rear spoiler, front kidney grille, door mirror caps and air breather slats. The BMW M Performance sport exhaust system is made of titanium, with carbon exhaust tips, and has been designed specially for use on the racetrack.

The transformation of the BMW M5 to a MotoGP Safety Car was completed by the inclusion of special racing features and the necessary safety equipment. The front splitter is a prototype developed specifically for the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car. The bonnet latches are taken directly from racing. The bucket seats from the BMW M4 GTS guarantee a combination of comfort and maximum security for their occupants when being in action on the racetrack. The flat light bar on the roof uses modern LED technology. It is controlled via a specially-developed cockpit panel. Another important signalling system is provided by the flashing front lights, consisting of blue LED lamps in the front grills and flashing corona rings for the headlamps.

The design of the new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Cars also makes a clear racing statement: it is inspired by the design of the new BMW M8 GTE race car, which will compete for BMW at the 24 Hours of Le Mans next year. Series developers from BMW M and the BMW Motorsport department worked hand in hand on development of the BMW M8 GTE. The design reflects this close cooperation.

This active control element is part of the M xDrive system’s functionality and its locking effect can be varied between zero and 100 per cent, as the situation demands. This ensures enhanced traction, agility and handling stability when the car is being driven in a very sporty manner or on roads with differing levels of grip – i.e. exactly when it is needed. Since M xDrive includes M-specific dynamics control capability, stabilising interventions from the DSC system are only required in extreme situations. And so the engine’s huge power can be converted into propulsive force with virtually zero losses. The upshot of all this is that the new BMW M5 can be guided with even greater precision and directional accuracy, responds sensitively and directly to the driver’s inputs and thus requires few steering corrections when driving at the limit.

À la carte handling dynamics: 4WD, 4WD Sport or 2WD.

Every time the engine is started, the BMW M5 defaults to 4WD mode with DSC on. Even in this basic configuration, which initially allows a certain amount of slip at the rear wheels to produce the agility for which M models are renowned, M xDrive offers tangible benefits in situations such as accelerating out of bends. The sedan completes the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) or 200 km/h (124 mph) sprints in the sort of times that leave its predecessor trailing in its wake and will make fans of sporty driving everywhere instantly prick up their ears.

Drivers with an even greater thirst for sporty action can tap into the car’s full performance potential by engaging a second configuration: M Dynamic Mode (MDM) with the M xDrive system’s 4WD Sport mode has been configured for ultra-sporty and dynamic handling. As a result, the new BMW M5 becomes far more agile than in the standard configuration and channels even more drive to the rear wheels. At the same time, MDM permits far greater wheel slip, allowing the enthusiastic driver to send the sedan into a controlled drift and experience the remarkable agility of the new BMW M5 – a familiar trait of M models – to the full. The onset of oversteer is telegraphed in good time while the linear increase of sideslip angle makes it easily controllable, particularly as MDM aids stability at the limits of performance.

With DSC deactivated, there is a choice of three modes (4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD). In 4WD mode, M xDrive has a neutral set-up that lends itself to optimum controllability and outstanding traction. This is of particular benefit on roads that are in mediocre or poor condition. At the same time, 4WD mode also lets the driver explore the dynamic performance capabilities of the new BMW M5 with the DSC control system deactivated.

Engaging 4WD Sport mode alters the M xDrive configuration for even greater agility and sportiness. The blend of absolute precision, delightful handling and phenomenal traction it reveals is a sure-fire route to supreme driving pleasure. 4WD Sport mode’s set-up has been fine-tuned with the assistance of highly experienced specialists and is geared towards track use in dry conditions.

With 2WD mode activated, the new BMW M5 offers the keen driver the experience of driving a high-performance sedan with rear-wheel drive only, delivering a pure form of driving enjoyment that captivates in its own unique way. The combination of incredibly agile handling, terrific feel and exceptional controllability can be attributed to the Active M Differential.

The display and control concept.

The driver-focused cockpit of the new BMW M5 now has an even clearer layout courtesy of the lowered instrument panel with freestanding Control Display. The M-style instrument cluster featuring two classical circular dials and red needles also accommodates an additional digital speedometer on the left-hand side, while the rev counter on the right includes a variable rpm pre-warning field and sporty shift lights when the Head-Up Display is switched on. In the centre of the instrument cluster, the driver will find the readouts for the gear selection, Drivelogic shift program, M xDrive mode and M1/M2 set-up, plus the drive and suspension settings currently engaged. When the Head-Up Display is activated, key information can be projected onto the windscreen so it appears in the driver’s immediate field of view. The graphics of the M view option developed for dynamic driving have been completely revised and M view now also allows navigation information to be displayed, if desired. The projection area of the Head-Up Display in the new BMW M5 has increased in size by around 70 per cent.

On top of the redesigned gear selector can be found the three-position rocker switch for selecting the Drivelogic shift programs. The P button below it for the parking lock is also within easy reach. In typical M fashion, the gears of the new eight-speed M Steptronic transmission can be changed using both the selector lever and the shift paddles on the steering wheel, while drivers can also opt for the automated D mode. In the manual S mode, meanwhile, the M Steptronic allows multiple downshifts, resulting in a significant reduction in shift times when performing sporty driving manoeuvres, such as braking hard into corners.

As on the outgoing model, the M sports steering wheel includes two individually configurable M Drive buttons (M1, M2) that allow the driver to retrieve a previously stored set-up. The drivetrain has been reinforced for greater rigidity and strength to factor in the high torque, rear-biased configuration and 2WD option. While the transfer case splits a portion of the engine’s drive between the front and rear wheels in a smoothly adjustable ratio (depending on requirements), the Active M Differential is responsible for then distributing the drive between the rear wheels. This active control element is part of the M xDrive system’s functionality and its locking effect can be varied between zero and 100 per cent, as the situation demands. This ensures enhanced traction, agility and handling stability when the car is being driven in a very sporty manner or on roads with differing levels of grip – i.e. exactly when it is needed. Since M xDrive includes M-specific dynamics control capability, stabilising interventions from the DSC system are only required in extreme situations. And so the engine’s huge power can be converted into propulsive force with virtually zero losses. The upshot of all this is that the new BMW M5 can be guided with even greater precision and directional accuracy, responds sensitively and directly to the driver’s inputs and thus requires few steering corrections when driving at the limit.

À la carte handling dynamics: 4WD, 4WD Sport or 2WD.

Every time the engine is started, the BMW M5 defaults to 4WD mode with DSC on. Even in this basic configuration, which initially allows a certain amount of slip at the rear wheels to produce the agility for which M models are renowned, M xDrive offers tangible benefits in situations such as accelerating out of bends. The sedan completes the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) or 200 km/h (124 mph) sprints in the sort of times that leave its predecessor trailing in its wake and will make fans of sporty driving everywhere instantly prick up their ears.

Drivers with an even greater thirst for sporty action can tap into the car’s full performance potential by engaging a second configuration: M Dynamic Mode (MDM) with the M xDrive system’s 4WD Sport mode has been configured for ultra-sporty and dynamic handling. As a result, the new BMW M5 becomes far more agile than in the standard configuration and channels even more drive to the rear wheels. At the same time, MDM permits far greater wheel slip, allowing the enthusiastic driver to send the sedan into a controlled drift and experience the remarkable agility of the new BMW M5 – a familiar trait of M models – to the full. The onset of oversteer is telegraphed in good time while the linear increase of sideslip angle makes it easily controllable, particularly as MDM aids stability at the limits of performance.

With DSC deactivated, there is a choice of three modes (4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD). In 4WD mode, M xDrive has a neutral set-up that lends itself to optimum controllability and outstanding traction. This is of particular benefit on roads that are in mediocre or poor condition. At the same time, 4WD mode also lets the driver explore the dynamic performance capabilities of the new BMW M5 with the DSC control system deactivated.

Engaging 4WD Sport mode alters the M xDrive configuration for even greater agility and sportiness. The blend of absolute precision, delightful handling and phenomenal traction it reveals is a sure-fire route to supreme driving pleasure. 4WD Sport mode’s set-up has been fine-tuned with the assistance of highly experienced specialists and is geared towards track use in dry conditions.

With 2WD mode activated, the new BMW M5 offers the keen driver the experience of driving a high-performance sedan with rear-wheel drive only, delivering a pure form of driving enjoyment that captivates in its own unique way. The combination of incredibly agile handling, terrific feel and exceptional controllability can be attributed to the Active M Differential.

The display and control concept.

The driver-focused cockpit of the new BMW M5 now has an even clearer layout courtesy of the lowered instrument panel with freestanding Control Display. The M-style instrument cluster featuring two classical circular dials and red needles also accommodates an additional digital speedometer on the left-hand side, while the rev counter on the right includes a variable rpm pre-warning field and sporty shift lights when the Head-Up Display is switched on. In the centre of the instrument cluster, the driver will find the readouts for the gear selection, Drivelogic shift program, M xDrive mode and M1/M2 set-up, plus the drive and suspension settings currently engaged. When the Head-Up Display is activated, key information can be projected onto the windscreen so it appears in the driver’s immediate field of view. The graphics of the M view option developed for dynamic driving have been completely revised and M view now also allows navigation information to be displayed, if desired. The projection area of the Head-Up Display in the new BMW M5 has increased in size by around 70 per cent.

On top of the redesigned gear selector can be found the three-position rocker switch for selecting the Drivelogic shift programs. The P button below it for the parking lock is also within easy reach. In typical M fashion, the gears of the new eight-speed M Steptronic transmission can be changed using both the selector lever and the shift paddles on the steering wheel, while drivers can also opt for the automated D mode. In the manual S mode, meanwhile, the M Steptronic allows multiple downshifts, resulting in a significant reduction in shift times when performing sporty driving manoeuvres, such as braking hard into corners.

As on the outgoing model, the M sports steering wheel includes two individually configurable M Drive buttons (M1, M2) that allow the driver to retrieve a previously stored set-up. The buttons have been completely redesigned and are prominently located. This ensures they are even easier to reach and, in customary M style, offer excellent speed of use. As well as the M xDrive mode and the Drivelogic shift program, the engine and damper mapping, Servotronic steering characteristics and readouts in the Head-Up Display can also be memorised. The desired settings can be stored via the iDrive menu. An icon in the instrument cluster indicates to the driver when a stored M1/M2 set-up is activated.

A short press of the DSC button in the centre console activates M Dynamic Mode (MDM) and a long press engages DSC off mode. When DSC off mode is activated, the M xDrive settings menu appears in the Control Display at the same time. Plus, it is now possible to select 4WD, 4WD Sport or 2WD mode using either the iDrive Controller or the touchscreen function. The mode activated is displayed in the instrument cluster and can also be saved as part of an M Drive set-up...

The BMW M5 Competition Edition celebrates the production life of the F10-generation M5, with just 200 M5 Competition Editions offered for sale worldwide.  Both power and torque have been increased, making the Competition Edition one of the most potent cars ever produced by BMW. The peak power output now stands at 600hp, while the torque output reaches a maximum of 700Nm, equating to a 0-62mph time of just 3.9 seconds. The standard fitment of the Competition Package, with its even more sportingly focused chassis, ensures the additional power is put to effective use.

The BMW M5 Competition Edition is readily identifiable by the fitment of carbon fibre BMW M Performance Parts and a black kidney grille. The 20-inch alloy wheels are painted Jet Black, and just two exterior colours are available: Mineral White and Carbon Black.

Inside, occupants benefit from Full Black Merino leather upholstery with Opal White contrast stitching, along with further selected details including the unique “1/200” engraving to the interior trim.

Even more power for the BMW M masterpiece.
The BMW M5 Competition Edition uses an even more powerful version of the twin-turbo V8 found in the standard BMW M5. While retaining the M TwinPower Turbo technology, twin-scroll turbochargers, high-precision direct fuel injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and the cross-bank exhaust manifold of the standard car, the Competition Edition runs more boost courtesy of a recalibrated ECU. Maximum power is up from 560hp to 600hp, with the peak torque of the V8 rising from 680Nm to 700Nm. As a result, the M5 Competition Edition can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 3.9 seconds, compared to 4.4 seconds for the standard car. Top speed is electronically limited to 155mph. With BMW’s seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission Drivelogic and Efficient Dynamics technology, including engine Auto Start-Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration, the M5’s fuel consumption remains at an impressive 28.5mpg, given its extreme performance, while CO2 emissions are 231g/km.

The M Competition Package fitted as standard for race-bred chassis dynamics.
The renowned sporting qualities of the BMW M5 have been further honed on the Competition Edition with the adoption of the M Competition Package as standard equipment. This consists of stiffer responses from the springs and electronically controlled dampers, along with thicker anti-roll bars. The Active M electronically controlled multi-plate limited slip differential, which intervenes rapidly and precisely at an early stage to control wheelspin and keep the car stable, is re-calibrated for an even more sporty response. Once again, there are three Drive Control settings to choose from: Comfort for normal road use, Sport when a more dynamic driving style is preferred and Sport Plus for the most extreme driving, such as on a race track. Six-piston caliper brakes are mounted within 20-inch M Double-spoke 601M light alloy wheels, finished in high gloss Jet Black.

The unmistakeable look of a pure sports saloon.
The familiar yet powerful presence of the BMW M5 is further emphasised on the M5 Competition Edition thanks to the use of BMW M Performance Parts. These consist of a rear spoiler, rear diffuser and mirror caps all manufactured from carbon fibre, and a gloss black kidney grille. Just two colours are available – Mineral White and Carbon Black – with the ‘M5 Competition’ logo appearing on the famous side ‘gills’.

High level of standard specification and a driver-focused ambience for the ultimate M5. 
The BMW M5 Competition Edition comes with an extensive range of equipment including Adaptive LED headlights, Reversing Assist camera, powered bootlid operation, Comfort Access and sun protection glass. The BMW M5 Competition Edition also benefits from full Black Merino leather upholstery with Opal White contrast stitching. Opal White is also used for the ‘M5’ logo that now appears on the head restraints of the M Sport multi-function seats, and for the piping of the anthracite floor mats. To celebrate 30 years of the BMW M5 – the founder member of the high-performance business Saloon segment – BMW has created an exclusive, special-edition of the current, fifth-generation model boasting performance that sets it apart from its stablemates. The BMW M5 30 Jahre Edition (30 years of the M5) will be produced in a limited run of just 300 vehicles worldwide. Only 30 cars will come to the UK.

Further increased performance.

Under the bonnet of the BMW M5 30 Jahre Edition is a 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an output of 600hp, 40hp more than the standard model. This power boost has been achieved through carefully calculated tweaks to the engine management and an increase in charge pressure.

The foundation for these upgrades was provided by the Competition package – itself a car that already came with a power upgrade. Conceived to appreciably enrich the handling characteristics of the BMW M5, it can be ordered as an option for the regular model and is part of the special edition’s standard specification. The Competition package comprises modifications including a revised chassis set-up with firmer spring/damper tuning and a 10mm drop in ride height. Added to which, the Active M Differential on the final drive gains its own control unit to further improve traction. Elsewhere, the steering with M-specific Servotronic function has more direct mapping and the M Dynamic Mode of the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system is focused even more keenly on delivering sporty handling.

Exclusive design exudes dynamic performance.

In keeping with the anniversary celebrations which have inspired its creation, the special-edition model has been given the BMW Individual treatment. As a result, it cuts a more dynamic, head-turning figure than its standard siblings. The striking BMW Individual Frozen Dark Silver metallic paint accentuates the elegantly muscular forms of the BMW M5. The kidney grille surround, gills with ‘30 Jahre M5’ badge on the front wing, door handle inserts and twin exhaust tailpipes all come in black chrome. The same is true of the 20-inch bi-colour M light-alloy wheels.

The interior of the BMW M5 30 Jahre Edition includes exclusive touches to highlight the anniversary. The driver and front passenger will be greeted by ‘30 Jahre M5’ lettering on the front door sill finishers, while a plaque bearing ‘30 Jahre M5’ and ‘1/300’ inscription is integrated into the Dark Aluminium Trace interior trim. The ‘30 Jahre M5’ logo is also embroidered into the backrests of all four of the high-performance Saloon’s seats.

Both the driver and front passenger in the M5 30 Jahre Editon can settle into M Sport multifunction seats upholstered in Individual Black Alcantara and Full Merino leather. Alcantara Anthracite trims the centre console and door panels as well as the M Sport multifunction steering wheel. A harman/kardon surround-sound system with a total of 16 speakers is also included as standard and a 1,200-watt Bang & Olufsen Advanced audio system is available as an option. In addition to the exclusive content this car it also features as standard such equipment as Adaptive LED Headlights, Comfort Access with smart opener, Driving Assistant, lumbar support and split folding rear seats with additional 12 volt power sockets.

For more than 25 years the BMW M5 Saloon has defined the high-performance saloon segment, in the process becoming the most successful car of its type in the world. Now a new fifth-generation model raises the concept of the premium executive saloon combining track-car dynamics and supreme touring comfort to an even higher level.

It features the most potent engine ever devised by BMW’s high-performance M division, here making its world premiere, along with race-bred chassis technology that includes, for the first time, an Active M differential and electronic damping control. For more than 25 years the BMW M5 Saloon has defined the high-performance saloon, in the process becoming the most successful car of its type in the world. Now a new fifth-generation model raises the concept of the premium executive saloon combining track-car dynamics and supreme touring comfort to an even higher level.     

It features the most potent engine ever devised by BMW’s high-performance M division, here making its world premiere, along with race-bred chassis technology that includes, for the first time, an Active M differential and electronic damping control. The unique exterior design has been dictated by the technical requirements of the car, while the luxurious sports car-like cockpit offers an extensive range of innovative driver assistance systems and mobility services.

The new M5 Saloon will be available in the UK in November 2011, priced at £73,040 on-the-road.   

Most powerful series production engine ever for a BMW
The heart of any BMW M car is its engine, and never more so than with the new M5. For the first time an M5 features a turbocharged power unit ­– a high-revving 4.4-litre (4395cc) V8, here making its world premiere. Developing 560hp from 5750-7000rpm, it is the most potent series-production engine ever to emerge from BMW’s high-performance M division. Incorporating the company’s M TwinPower Turbo technology, twin-scroll turbochargers, high-precision direct fuel injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and a cross-bank exhaust manifold, it guarantees the legendary BMW M-car thrust with seamless lag-free delivery from little more than tickover speed thanks to 680Nm of torque from only 1500rpm.   

Compared with the previous V10-engined M5, maximum power is up by around 10 per cent and peak torque by more than 30 per cent. As a result, the latest M5 can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 4.4 seconds, and 0-124mph in only 13 seconds. The voluntarily limited top speed is 155mph. 

In any BMW, performance goes hand-in-hand with efficiency, and the new M5 Saloon is no exception. With BMW’s seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission Drivelogic and Efficient Dynamics technology, including engine Auto Start-Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration, the M5’s fuel consumption has been reduced by more than 30 per cent to 28.5mpg, while CO2 emissions tumble to 232g/km. 

The transmission offers manual (S) and fully automated (D) shift options, with three programmes in each, allowing the driver to select the most sporty, relaxed or efficient driving style at will via a rocker switch. There is also a low speed assistance function to keep the car moving smoothly through heavy traffic with only a light touch on the accelerator. At the same time the engine characteristics can be switched from Efficient to Sport or Sport Plus through another button in the centre console.   
The two banks of the V8 engine are arranged at 90 degrees, leaving space to accommodate the two turbochargers and catalytic converters in their midst. This ensures that the engine is not only extremely compact, but that the catalytic converters reach operating temperature more quickly to boost efficiency, while the short length of the unique intake and exhaust ducts minimises pressure losses. BMW’s patented cross-bank exhaust manifold optimises gas flow to the twin-scroll turbochargers, which have been specially developed for the M5 Saloon to deliver a maximum charge pressure of 1.5 bar. The construction principle of the M TwinPower Turbo technology also helps give the M5 Saloon its distinctive V8 soundtrack.    

Solenoid injectors positioned centrally between the valves, within immediate range of the spark plugs, deliver multiple sprays of fuel directly into the cylinders at a maximum pressure of 200 bar. The cooling effect of direct injection allows an extraordinarily high compression ratio of  10:1, a further aid to efficiency. VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control adjusts the lift of the intake valves to minimise throttle losses in the gas cycle, while Double-Vanos fully variable camshaft control helps the engine achieve its outstanding level of torque at low rpm.  

Track-car dynamics with supreme touring comfort: Hallmark M
The driving dynamics of the new M5 Saloon are grouped under an umbrella which BMW calls Hallmark M. They include a further advancement of the specially developed differential that allows M drivers to enjoy the benefits of high-powered rear-wheel-drive cars with maximum safety. Called Active M, it is an electronically controlled multi-plate limited slip diff that intervenes rapidly and precisely at an early stage to control wheelspin and keep the car stable. Its control unit is connected via FlexRay high-speed data transfer to the Dynamic Stability (DSC) control system to calculate the locking force needed – anywhere between 0% and 100%. It also takes into account the position of the accelerator, the rotational speed of the wheels and the car’s yaw rate.        

As a result, the BMW M5 Saloon driver not only has the safety net of a sophisticated and responsive traction control system in slippery conditions and tightening corners, but is also able to enjoy to the full the agility which is an essential part of the make-up of all M cars.

The DSC system is linked to the anti-lock brakes (ABS), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Brake Assistant, brake fade compensation, Brake Drying function and Start-off Assistant.  By pressing the DSC button the driver can override the basic settings and select M Dynamic Mode (MDM), which raises the intervention thresholds or turns them off completely.

The new M5’s Saloon agility owes as much to its perfect front-to-rear weight balance and excellent power-to-weight ratio (3.3kg per bhp) as it does to the chassis dynamics which, like the engine, have benefited from BMW’s participation in top-level motorsport.

The M5 Saloon has bespoke M-specific suspension with specially developed axle kinematics honed not only on the race track but also through extensive testing at the Nurburgring. As a result, the chassis components are both light and strong. The new M5 comes as standard with electronically controlled dampers that allow drivers to select from three settings – Comfort for normal road use, Sport when a more dynamic driving style is preferred and Sport Plus for the most extreme driving, such as on a race track.

The driver can also choose between three settings for the M-tuned Servotronic power assisted steering. Comfort requires only a small amount of steering effort when manoeuvring or parking, but still allows the instant changes of direction expected of an M car at higher speeds. Sport delivers more intensive feedback while Sport Plus requires greater force on the wheel so that the driver gets precisely the response that is intended from every steering input.

The new M5 has six-piston caliper brakes featuring a further development of BMW’s remarkable compound construction so that they resist fade even under repeated heavy loads and deliver an exceptional degree of feel. They are mounted within 19-inch M light alloy wheels with 265/40 R19 tyres at the front and 295/35 R19 tyres at the rear. Forged 20-inch alloys can be specified as an option. 

Form follows function
The dynamic appearance and authoritative stance of the regular 5 Series saloon have been lifted by M-specific design features at the front, rear and sides.

These have been almost entirely dictated by the technical demands of an ultra-high-performance car.

The wide-spread M black slats in the grille and the three air intakes in the low front apron are there to satisfy the cooling requirements of the twin-turbo V8 engine, for example, while the air channelling flaps at the lower edge of the front end were developed on the race track and are designed to optimise the aerodynamics of the car.    

The contours of the bonnet converge into a V shape to meet the customary BMW double-kidney grille, which sits above a forward projecting central aperture between two curving side intakes which collectively emphasise the width of the new M5 Saloon. Standard bi-xenon front light clusters contain visually unique LED light rings and indicator lights which consist of 10 LED units. LED accent lights cut across the top of the familiar BMW twin round headlamps.

A long wheelbase, set-back passenger compartment and high-gloss black side window surround accentuate the stretched profile of the new M5 Saloon. Flared wheel arches, flush 19- or 20-inch wheels and lowered M suspension ensure the car’s sporting characteristics do not go unmistaken. The wheels give a clear view of the six-piston fixed calipers of the high-performance braking system.

The front side sections have a fresh interpretation of the hallmark M gills within a chrome frame adorned with the BMW M logo, while the mirror casings – in body colour with high-gloss black lower edges and bases ­ – are aerodynamically shaped, emphasised by their horizontal crease line. The side skirts feature a powerful bulge and a rising crease which draws attention to the driven wheels and re-emphasises that this is the performance flagship of the 5 Series range.

At the rear, horizontal lines give the M5 a wide, sporty stance, and a diffuser is incorporated in the lower edge of the apron to allow sufficient airflow through the underfloor section. A signature feature of the new M5 is the twin-tailpipe exhaust system, positioned wide on either side of the diffuser.

A subtle Gurney flap on the rear edge of the boot lid provides additional downforce at high speed. L-shaped rear light units contain LED strips, indicators and brake lamps and are clearly identifiable at night as belonging to a BMW.     

Innovation in a luxurious sports-car cockpit
The interior of the M5 fuses the intimacy of a sports-car cockpit, the spaciousness of a prestige saloon and the luxury of a premium car. It features bespoke M Sports seats, Merino leather upholstery, Aluminium Trace interior trim strips and the BMW Individual roof liner in Anthracite, plus the BMW iDrive control system with a 10.2-inch Control Display. M5 lettering on the sill is standard.

The instrument cluster with black-panel technology includes classic BMW M circular dials with red needles and white illumination. The multifunction buttons on the M leather steering wheel operate the cruise control, radio and telephone. On the left-hand side the driver will now find two M Drive buttons which can call up a pre-configured setting for the car – for example, a sports or a more comfort-orientated set of driving characteristics.

The driver can adjust no fewer than six parameters: engine management, the Servotronic power steering, the M DCT Drivelogic gearshift programme, DSC mode, the electronically variable Dynamic Damper Control and the information relayed in the standard driver Head-up Display. These can be re-configured at any time via the iDrive menu. 

The new BMW M5 offers an extensive range of standard and optional innovative driver assistance systems and mobility services in a sports car-like cockpit that meets every requirement of a premium high-performance saloon.

Standard equipment in the UK includes Head-up Display, DAB digital radio, front and rear Park Distance Control, four-zone air-conditioning, Xenon headlights, Adaptive Headlights and front seat heating. With Professional Multimedia Navigation system and BMW Assist, a new real-time traffic information service provides accurate traffic bulletins and diversion suggestions. Furthermore, with Bluetooth and USB audio interface as standard, the integration of Smartphones and music players keep occupants entertained and informed.

Optional equipment including a rear-view camera, High-Beam Assistant, Speed Limit information, Lane Change and Lane Departure warnings, Surround View and BMW Night Vision ensure the driver is aware of anything and everything happening within the vicinity of the car.  A Mobile Application preparation allows iPhone owners to receive web radio stations and display Facebook and Twitter posts on the Control Display.

1. Introduction

Launched in March 2007, the new BMW 5 Series resets the standard by which
executive cars will be judged for years to come. With its predecessor
achieving record UK sales in 2006 of 19,606 units, demand for the car is at an
all-time high. The addition of elements of BMW's EfficientDynamics programme,
together with subtle design enhancements, ensures that the new 5 Series will
appeal to an even broader audience and build on the success of the outgoing
car.

EfficientDynamics is an on-going BMW philosophy that brings together a host of
new, innovative technologies including visions of a zero-emission mobility
future.
The hydrogen-powered 7 Series shows how this might be possible while today's
innovative lightweight material constructions and a host of class-leading
engine technologies on the new 5 Series bring EfficientDynamics to the
mainstream.

The combination of today's EfficientDynamics technologies in the new 5 Series
delivers a car with all of the driving characteristics expected of a BMW but
with significantly better economy and less emissions. Better, in fact, than

EfficientDynamics technologies deliver significant financial benefits to retail
and corporate buyers. Based on a total annual mileage of 20,000 miles, 75 per
cent of which is business with prevailing fuel costs, the company driver of a

1. The new BMW M5: The car with a heart of pure gold
(short story)

The anticipated arrival of a new M car from BMW is always an exciting time for
aficionados. And though the M6 has already been unveiled, the M5,
traditionally the flagship of the M range, is a particular cause for
celebration.

The M5 pioneered its small and exclusive market sector back in 1985. The idea
of an executive car, with all its attendant practicality and comfort, married
to a high-powered engine to give super car performance was without precedent.
Subsequent generations with six and eight-cylinder engines have acquired an
increasing following, not only from eager customers but also from competitors
trying to keep up.

Loyal M5 drivers have had to wait almost two years for the E60-based fourth
generation and they won't be disappointed. Now BMW is opening a new chapter in
this very special segment. The new M5 is the first volume production saloon
car to offer a high revving V10 engine and a seven speed sequential gearbox
allied, of course, to a chassis delivering fluid responses and poised handling.

BMW have won more accolades in the Engine Technology International Awards - 20
in all - than any other manufacturer and M engines have featured particularly
well. Let's take a closer look at the new V10.

Power through sophistication:

The V10 engine configuration has so far been the preserve of racing cars and
exotic low volume sports cars. BMW is, therefore, breaking the mould with this
new five-litre unit: it produces 507bhp, thereby achieving a specific power
output of no less than 101.4bhp per litre - a remarkable result from such a
large capacity engine.

Producing a 25 per cent power increase over its predecessor's similarly-sized
engine required both brilliant design and novel thinking. To increase power by
this margin there are three possible routes. Increasing engine capacity is one
but this leads to higher weight in the nose of the car and a need for more
under-bonnet space to accommodate the engine. A second way is to add forced
induction devices - super - or turbochargers but here, again, there is a
penalty: rarely do such engines excel at conserving fuel and they lack
spontaneity in response.

The high revving solution:

BMW chose the third way - a high revving normally aspirated engine. This was
by no means the easiest route but it demonstrates BMW M engineers' quest to
offer only the purest solution for purist M5 customers.

The result is an engine that reaches maximum power at 7,750rpm (1,150 more than
the last M5) and goes on to reach maximum revs of 8,250.

High revs + power + torque + gearing = thrust:

High power outputs and engine revs are not, however, an objective in
themselves. To produce the driving response required by M5 drivers these
characteristics must be melded with high torque and gearing throughout the
driveline that blend to produce thrust.

Acceleration characteristics and driving dynamics depend on the balance of
forward thrust and vehicle weight and this has been the main focus for M
engineers.

The new M5 engine produces 520Nm at 6,100rpm and 450Nm is available from only
3,500rpm thus providing a wide engine range from which to produce thrust.

F1 technology takes to the road:

It will not escape the notice of aficionados that the new M5 engine shares its
V10 configuration with the BMW F1 engine in the BMW Williams F1 car. It is
not, of course, directly related - it has 5.0 litres and the F1 engine is 3.0
litres - but apart from sharing the V10 layout it is a high revving engine,
like the F1 unit, and much of the inspiration for the electronics and engine
design was drawn from F1 experience.

The high speed nature of the engine is a case in point. The new 'ten cylinder'
has broken the 8,000rpm barrier and reaches a maximum of 8,250rpm. At 8,000rpm
each piston covers 20 metres a second. At 18,000rpm the pistons of the F1
engine move at 25 metres a second. The difference is that the M engine must
last for a 'lifetime' while the F1 engine only has to travel 800kms or so.

Same birthplace:

So it is abundantly clear that the M5 engine has technological principles,
production methods and materials in common with the F1 engine. It is the
product of technological transfer. The M5 blocks are cast at the BMW light
alloy foundry in Landshut - the same place as the F1 engines - before they
journey to the special engine plant in Munch for assembly.

Weight-watcher - every gram counts:

This masterpiece of an engine weighs in at just 240kgs, almost exactly the same
as its 400bhp forefather. There are a host of super-light components inside the
engine - for example the forged steel crankshaft, carried in six bearings,
weighs only 21.8kgs while each piston weighs a mere 481.7 grams. Overall
moving masses in the valve train have been reduced by 17.5 per cent when
compared with its predecessor.

Each small contribution to weight reduction helps to ensure that the goal of
perfect 50/50 front to rear weight distribution is achieved.

Breathing and exhaling:

BMW's familiar Bi-VANOS infinitely variable camshaft control has been developed
to suit the new high-speed engine. The system enables increased performance,
an improved torque curve and lower fuel consumption and exhaust emissions.

Stainless steel five-into-one tubular exhaust manifolds, with a wall thickness
of just 0.8mm, feed exhaust gases into two dual flow exhaust pipes equipped
with four trimetal-coated catalytic converters. These reach optimum
temperature quickly and enable the M5 to meet European EU4 and American LEV2
emission standards with ease.

The brain behind the brawn:

A high speed engine requires high speed electronic management to ensure that
every last ounce of performance can be extracted. To achieve this objective,
BMW has developed one of the world's most advanced engine management systems,
MS S65, designed and built entirely in-house using know-how from BMW's F1
programme.

Made up of more than 1,000 individual components it coordinates and controls
all engine and gearbox functions by using three 32-bit processors that can
perform more than 200 million individual calculations each second ..... yes,
200 million. This represents a performance increase by a factor of eight when
compared with the M3 unit launched four years ago and MS S65 has ten times the
memory capacity too.

A host of technical jewels:

The technical details of this new V10 engine could fill a book (see engine
section) but to highlight just three items:

... There are ten individual throttle butterflies, each individually
electronically controlled, which read the position of the throttle pedal 200
times a second.
... A clever transverse lubrication system ensures that the two cylinder heads
receive oil even when 1g cornering forces are experienced and a quasi-dry sump
system keeps the bottom end lubricated even under extreme 1.3g braking.
... The spark plugs use ionic current technology to act as a sensor and inform
the MS S65 unit about combustion conditions and control engine knock, as well
as igniting the fuel / air mixture.

7 speed SMG transmission (SMG III):

To extract the best from this gem of a V10 engine BMW has developed a seven
speed Sequential M Gearbox (SMG). This manual gearbox is an all-new
transmission designed to handle up to 550Nm of torque and engine speeds of up
to 8,500rpm, giving capacity to spare. Naturally, seven gears allows shorter
steps from one gear to the next than a five or six-speed 'box so this gearbox
matches torque to the prodigious power output and translates it into maximum
forward thrust.

Drivelogic - bespoke gear changes:

BMW is the first manufacturer to offer such a seven-speed sequential gearbox in
a saloon car. Another first is Drivelogic - eleven gear change programmes to
suit every driver and all driving conditions.

The selection of programmes is made by pressing a button next to the gear lever
or by choosing a preferred default mode programmed via MDrive Manager in the
iDrive menu and activated by the MDrive button on the steering wheel.

Six programmes in S mode are manual changes that must be determined by the
driver - either using the gear lever (forward for down changes, back for up) or
the paddles behind the steering wheel (left for down changes right for up).
The remaining five in D mode are automated changes.

Each programme differs in gear change time - the higher the programme the
shorter and faster the shift times. In the automated modes use of the throttle
can influence the change: for example releasing the throttle encourages an
up-shift while pressing it harder calls up a down change.

Warp speed shifting:

The SMG system in the current M3 (SMG II) is already very fast but the new
seven-speed SMG in the M5 (SMG III) is 20 per cent quicker still. To put this
in perspective the new gearbox can make changes in 50 milliseconds while a
seasoned driver will take around half a second with a normal manual gearbox.

Other features of the new SMG gearbox include:

... Gearchange lights and engine revolutions graphic in the Head-up Display
(HUD).
... SMG includes a launch control system that gives perfect F1-style starts
from zero to maximum speed.
... Hill start assistant prevents roll back when stopping on a gradient after
releasing the brake.
... Hill recognition allows SMG to change gear points on gradients eg holding
lower gears on downhill stretches and vice versa.

Agility and poise:

An outstanding drivetrain cries out for a chassis that can exploit its
potential. To harness 507bhp effectively M engineers were presented with a
considerable challenge.

They did, of course, already have a head start. The chassis of the 'normal' 5
Series Saloon is widely recognised as the most able in the executive segment.
The high torsional rigidity of the bodyshell, well-balanced 50/50 weight
distribution, long wheelbase, wide track, aluminium suspension and, of course,
rear wheel drive all coalesce into a fine springboard.

Starting at this high level the engineers made a number of detailed changes to
meet the extra demands made by the M5's potential. They stiffened the front
subframe and changed the bearings at the front while at the rear additional
supports, links and joints ensure greater precision for poised handling. The
suspension bushes have also been tuned with high performance in mind. The final
drive casing is made of aluminium and finned to reduce weight and improve
cooling. Lightweight but stiff tubular drive shafts keep moving masses low.

Nurburgring ding a ding:

Extensively tested on the 'Nordschliefe' at the Nurburgring, BMW test drivers
have proved the M5's sporting aspirations by lapping in under 8 minute 15
seconds.

Steering:

M Servotronic power steering is both road- and engine-speed related which
resolves the dilemma of the need for lighter steering at parking speeds and
firmer, 'heavier' steering to provide driver feedback at speed.

The M5's Servotronic mapping offers two alternatives to the standard default
setting and both relate to the prevailing Electronic Damper Control (EDC)
mode. In the sporty EDC mode steering is more direct giving the driver an
immediate, precise response while in Comfort EDC mode a higher ratio gives an
easier, more comfortable steering reaction.

Electronic Damper Control (EDC):

EDC provides continuous and infinitely variable shock absorber control. In
normal mode the damping is adjusted to achieve the optimum balance for normal
conditions while 'Sport' and 'Comfort' provide firmer and softer reactions
respectively.

Variable M Differential Lock:

Like the M3 the new M5 has a variable, torque-sensing differential developed by
BMW M GmbH. Unlike a normal limited slip differential the M differential lock
can provide between zero and 100 per cent of the drive forces to either driven
wheel. This ensures maximum stability and optimum traction.

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with MDynamic mode:

A new generation of DSC was developed exclusively for the new M5 and can be
programmed to act in one of three stages. The first corresponds to a standard,
DSC fully operational mode of the M5, while the second, MDynamic mode, and
third, DSC completely disengaged, will appeal to the sporting driver. The
desired programme is initially selected using the MDrive Manager programme (see
page 10) but is then subsequently activated by simply pressing the MDrive
button on the steering wheel.

MDynamic mode is a development of BMW's Dynamic Traction Control system and
allows the driver to really 'push the envelope' of the M5's performance
capabilities. DSC set at this stage will not intervene to save things until
the last possible moment. Therefore the M5 can reach amazing slip angles and
still recover. Understandably, this should not be practised on the public
road. In addition the driver can also switch between DSC fully operational or
completely disengaged via a button on the centre console.

Brakes:

Large, drilled compound disc brakes with aluminium twin-piston sliding
callipers provide braking to match the M5's performance. Whether wet or dry
the M5 stopping capability is matched only by the most accomplished sports cars.

Braking from 62mph the M5 is stationary after just 26 metres. From 124mph the
braking distance is less than 140 metres.

Wheels and tyres:

To accommodate the huge brake discs the M5 is equipped with 19-inch M Light
Alloy double spoke wheels of unique design (8.5 inches at the front and 9.5
inches at the rear).

Specially developed tyres were designed and tuned on the Nordschliefe to
deliver both comfort and feedback to the driver. Tyre sizes are 255/40 ZR 19
at the front and 285/35 ZR 19 at the rear.

A tyre defect system warns if pressure drops below a certain threshold and the
familiar M Mobility System allows tyre damage of up to 6mm to be sealed
effectively by the roadside.

Hence there is no need for a spare wheel and tyre saving 20kgs, bringing the
benefits of a power-to-weight reduction and better driving dynamics.

Body beautiful:

The 5 Series styling is already familiar since it is the best selling executive
car in the UK. The M5 benefits from the standard car's intelligent lightweight
engineering (aluminium front section and suspension) but has specific styling
changes to distinguish it from the rest of the range.

A front air dam with large air intakes feed cooling air into the engine bay
while smaller intakes cool the brakes. Small spoiler lips on the apron reduce
lift coefficients to improve stability.

From the side the shape of the front wings has been modified to accommodate the
large wheels and finned gills with M5 logos displayed behind each front wheel.

Low, wide side sills emphasise the length of the M5 and serve to route air
along the underbody to enhance dynamics. New door mirrors were honed in the
wind tunnel and make a contribution towards reducing lift on the front axle.

At the rear a new apron incorporates a wide diffuser flanked by two pairs of
large, round tailpipes - a feature typical of all M cars. The diffuser itself
plays an important role in underbody air routing and differential cooling,
together with the small bootlid spoiler, it helps the car to achieve a low drag
coefficient of 0.31.

Overall, the M5 continues its tradition of appearing both discreet and muscular.

Colours:

Four exclusive exterior colours - Sepang Bronze, Silverstone II, Indianapolis
Red and Interlagos Blue - join the range of three existing colours - Black
Sapphire, Silver Grey and Alpine White. Additionally, BMW Individual offers a
much wider colour palette for the car.

Interior:

Inside the M5 has all the comfort expected of a popular executive car. Five
seats clad in Merino leather, available in four colour choices plus an
extensive list from the Individual programme, cosset the occupants. Full
leather upholstery is available as an option in two further colours and a
Climate leather option features active ventilation of the two front seats.

At the 'business' end, the contoured 'M' driver and front passenger seats have
passive backrest width adjustment for perfect side support. These seats offer
seat memory, seat heating and lumbar support plus a wide range of adjustments.

A special M5 seat option is the M multi-function seat featuring active backrest
width adjustment. When the seat senses lateral movement and a change of
steering angle the side support and backrest width move in to meet the body,
thus holding the occupants firmly in position.

These active characteristics of the seat can be selected in three modes -
Comfort, Normal or Sport - and can be programmed to become active as part of
the one-touch MDrive steering wheel button. The driver can set this up via the
MDrive Manager programme and then subsequently simply use the steering wheel
button. Alternatively the settings for each seat can also be changed between
the three settings courtesy of two buttons on the centre console.

Storage:

The luggage compartment offers 500 litres of clear space - enough to hold two
large and three small hard cases or four golf bags. A 60:40 split rear seat
allows increased carrying space and a ski bag is available as an option.

Head-up Display:

The new Head-up Display (HUD) is standard on the new M5 giving driving
information directly in the driver's line of sight - ie it appears to be at the
end of the bonnet. The driver can choose to have the normal HUD display
including navigation information or specific M information.

The M-specific display shows engine revs in a coloured map image, gear change
lights, gear in mesh and vehicle speed. In either display any of the check
control messages such as 'door open' or 'low fuel' are still shown.

At the wheel:

The newly designed M leather multi-function steering wheel is ergonomically
designed with the SMG shift paddles (down on the left, up on the right) within
fingertip reach.

The M5 has a new speedometer and rev counter in the style of a round black dial
with white numerals and the typical M red needles to provide essential
information. Yellow and red warning fields indicate rev limits while the
engine is warming. An oil gauge and odometer complete the instruments while a
display between the speedo and tacho shows the SMG gear selected and Drivelogic
programme operation. It can also display the engine's oil level.

MDrive Manager:

MDrive is a new function activated by the M button on the steering wheel. It
enables the driver to change the comfortable and sober executive saloon into a
thoroughbred sports car at the touch of a button.

It activates the following functions (after they have been pre-selected by the
driver from the MDrive Manager menu):

... The power button - P400, P500 or P500 Sport programmes
... SMG Drivelogic - which of the 11 programmes is preferred
... DSC - on, MDynamic mode or off

In short, MDrive Manager and the subsequent use of the MDrive button tailors
the M5 to the driver's exact requirements - just like slipping on a Saville Row
suit.

Safety:

The passive safety features of the new M5 are comprehensive. They include:

The market:

Customers for the M5 are choosing to buy in one of the most exclusive sectors
of the market. The unique blend of a thoroughbred sporting car clothed in a
relatively discreet saloon body is an enticing and unique attraction to
connoisseurs.

Typically, buyers are predominantly male and married with two further cars in
their household. They are usually senior executives in large companies,
successful professionals or entrepreneurs. At an average age of 45 they are
younger than owners of other 5 Series and have a higher level of training and
income. They pursue prestige and active lifestyles which include golf, sailing
and exclusive travel.

Happily, the typical M5 driver uses his (or her) car everyday and often on long
business journeys.

Sales history:

The first M5 (E28 1985-87) sold 210 examples in the UK. The second (E34
1990-95) sold 694 with a peak year of 189 cars and the most recent model (E39
1999-2003) sold 1,510 examples and a peak year 484.

BMW UK expects to sell similar numbers of the new M5 to those of its
predecessor - around 450 per year. Production of the Dingolfing built V10 M5
is limited and current order banks indicate a two to three year waiting list.

"If one could bottle the essence of BMW, this M5 would be it", said Jim
O'Donnell, managing director of BMW (UK) Ltd.

"Our engineers have strained every sinew to bring to the market a car with the
technological repertoire, countless innovations and level of sophistication
never before matched in a production saloon.

"Our competitors have tried to follow the lead set by M and each time they get
close, BMW M simply blows them away. No wonder they shiver when a new M car
arrives.

"If we could obtain more production I am confident that we could easily outsell
our record with the last M5, itself a great BMW. It appears, however, that we
will be unable to get enough and the waiting list will continue to be a long
one.

"With this 'essence' I feel sure that 2005 will be a vintage year for the BMW
M5," O'Donnell concluded.

The new M5 goes on sale at BMW UK's dealers on May 19, 2005 priced at £61,760
on-the-road.

1. World premiere of the new BMW M5 - (Short story)

The ultimate in sports saloon motoring has got a name: M5. This finest 5 Series
vehicle is the most powerful of all time: five litres of cubic capacity, ten
cylinders, a maximum output of 507 bhp (373 kW), a peak torque of 520 Newton
metres and engine speeds redlining at 8,000 rpm, these are figures that speak
for themselves. In an unprecedented way, these figures blur the lines between a
car for everyday use and a vehicle for ambitious motor sport racing.

A successful recipe for two decades: power without overstatement.

With its performance figures, the fourth-generation M5 once again sets the
benchmark in the segment of powerful sports saloons, a niche which the first M5
carved for itself back in 1984. During the last 20 years, this first M5 and all
its successors have made their mark, always setting the standard as a perfect
symbiosis of a comfortable, elegant saloon for everyday use, abundant output
delivered by a powerful engine and ultimate sportiness. With sales figures
exceeding 20,000, the M5 has proved to be an economically successful concept
which combines prodigious performance with understatement, a basic feature of
all M automobiles.

First high-revving V10 engine to be featured in
a regular-production saloon.

The V10 is the only high-revving power unit to be featured in a
series-production car. Featured in the most powerful production car within the
BMW model family, this new engine once again sets the benchmark in its class.
There is, however, more to it than pure performance. What is important for M
automobiles is acceleration and driving dynamics, the latter which is dependent
on the actual forward thrust and the vehicle's weight. The drive forces at the
driven wheels are significantly influenced by the engine torque and the total
ratio. The high-revving concept caters for an optimum transmission and
rear-axle ratio, thus guaranteeing an impressive forward thrust.

The perfect choice: high-revving concept.

For the BMW M engineers the compact, high-revving normally aspirated engine was
the ideal choice. With a red line of 8,250 rpm, the ten-cylinder engine has
ventured into terrain which has so far been reserved for red-blooded racing
cars. Compared to the previous M5 eight-cylinder engine, performance has
increased by more than 25 percent. The M5 has also surpassed the magical 100
bhp per litre limit, its specific output being on par with that of racing cars.

A masterpiece in engine construction.

The two five-cylinder banks of the V10 are arranged at an angle of 90° to
achieve a mass balance of the crankshaft drive, which is optimised for low
vibration and increased comfort. For reasons of stiffness and due to the high
loads resulting from combustion pressure, engine speed and vibrations, a
bedplate design has been chosen for the crankcase, the first-ever application
in a production V engine by BMW. For an optimum alignment of the crankshaft,
grey-cast iron inserts have been integrated into the aluminium bedplate, which
also serve to enhance acoustics, increase vibrational comfort and ensure a high
oil supply rate. The extremely stiff crankshaft is supported by six bearings.

High-pressure bi-VANOS and individual throttle butterflies.

The bi-VANOS variable valve timing featured in the new M5 engine ensures an
optimum charge cycle, thus helping to achieve extremely short adjustment times.
This means in practice: increased performance, an improved torque curve,
optimum responsiveness, lower consumption and fewer emissions. Each cylinder
has its own throttle, a feature typical of racing cars. Throttle control is
fully electronic and cylinder bank specific.

Dual exhaust system made of stainless steel.

The exhaust system is made of seamless stainless steel and has a dual-flow
design all the way to the silencers. The exhaust gases finally leave the system
through four tailpipes which are what make the rear end of the M vehicles so
unmistakable. The exhaust system complies with the European EU4 and the US LEV2
emission standards.

The engine control module: the first of its kind in the world.
The MS S65 engine management system is the central factor behind the V10's
outstanding performance and emission data. This engine management system is
unparalleled in its package density. Its processors are the most powerful ones
which are currently approved for use in automobiles, as high engine speeds and
comprehensive management and control tasks demand the utmost from this system.

Highlight in engine management: ionic current technology.

The ionic current technology featured by the engine management unit is a
technological highlight which serves to detect engine knock, misfiring and
combustion misses. Utilising the spark plug in each cylinder, this system helps
to pinpoint engine knock, to check for correct ignition and to detect any
ignition misses. Thus, the spark plug has a dual function - as an actuator for
the ignition and as a sensor for monitoring the combustion process.

Seven-speed SMG gearbox conveys M power to the tarmac.

The high-revving concept only succeeds in combination with a gearbox which
translates the torque available to the engine, by means of a short overall
transmission ratio, into optimised forward thrust.

The seven-speed SMG gearbox is precisely the right transmission to ideally
convey the V10 engine's power via the drive train to the wheels. BMW M is the
first manufacturer worldwide to offer a seven-speed sequential gearbox with
drivelogic function. Even more highly perfected than the previous six-speed
transmission, the seven-speed SMG gearbox enables manual gear selection with
ultra-short shifting times as well as comfortable cruising thanks to automated
gear selection. The purpose of the additional seventh gear is to reduce engine
speed and torque gaps.

New SMG gearbox's speed up by 20 percent.

With the seven-speed SMG gearbox, gears can be changed using the gearshift
lever on the centre console or the paddles on the steering wheel. Compared to
the previous SMG transmission, changing gears is 20 percent faster with the new
SMG generation. Never before has it been quicker to change gears with a
transmission of this kind. The advantage for the M5 driver: Gear change is
smooth and accomplished at a speed impossible to reach even by the most
proficient driver, thus making the inevitable power flow interruptions when
changing gears hardly noticeable. The M5 delivers an almost jerk-free
performance when accelerating from a standstill to its top speed.

Drivelogic: the driver determines
the SMG's characteristics for changing gears:

Thanks to the SMG's drivelogic function, the driver can choose from eleven gear
change options, which enable him to adapt the SMG's characteristics to his very
own style of motoring.

Six of these programs can be pre-selected in the sequential manual gearbox mode
(S mode), the spectrum ranging from balanced dynamic to very sporty. With the
gearbox in the S mode, the driver always shifts gears manually. Whenever the
driver activates the Launch Control function, the SMG Drivelogic shifts gears
shortly before the maximum engine speed is reached at precisely the right
moment and with optimum slip until the M5 reaches its top speed.

In the Drive (D mode) automatic gearshift mode, the transmission shifts the
seven gears automatically, depending on the program selected, the driving
situation, the road speed and the position of the accelerator pedal.

SMG for increased safety and comfort.

The seven-speed SMG gearbox not only supports the driver in achieving motor
sports performance, but also offers scores of safety features. In critical
situations, when the driver shifts down on a slippery surface, for example, the
gearbox opens the clutch in the fraction of a second in order to prevent the M5
from swerving out of control in the event of excessive drag torque at the
driven wheels. Further functions are the climbing, which prevents the car from
rolling backwards during hill starts as well as the hill detection, which
adjusts the shift points on gradients and descents. This prevents gear hunting
when going uphill. When driving downhill, the hill detection holds the lower
gears for longer in order to make effective use of the engine's braking power.

Maximum driving pleasure.

The interaction of the V10 engine and the seven-speed SMG gearbox results in a
level of performance, which has so far been inconceivable for series-production
saloons. Above all, there is one thing the M5 gives to its driver: driving
pleasure at its best. Compared to the previous M5, the current model comes up
trumps in all performance and fun disciplines: it accomplishes the 0 to 62 mph
sprint in 4,7 seconds and reaches the 200 km/h (124 mph) mark after a mere 15
seconds to go on to the electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).
A glance at the speedometer reveals where this power package would head for if
maximum speed was not electronically limited: an awe-inspiring 330 km/h (205
mph).

The Nürburgring serves as a test track.

Compared to all direct competitors, the interaction of actual forward thrust
and a low vehicle weight is a strong argument in favour of the new M5. Also in
this respect, the M5 sets the benchmark and leaves its competitors far behind.

An undisputed gauge of driving dynamics is the northern loop of the legendary
Nürburgring race track. For decades, the world's most demanding race track has
been the perfect place of separating the wheat from the chaff. There is no
other place where the interaction of vehicle components when taken to the
limits can be observed as well as on the Nürburgring's northern loop. With lap
times of approximately eight minutes, the M5 can hold its own and is a worthy
competitor of thoroughbred sports cars, leaving its competitors far behind. By
the way: traditionally, all M vehicles are tested there.

M suspension based on the 5 Series: the icing on the cake.

The aforementioned lap time demonstrates that the M5 can be extremely sporty.
Although the suspension of the basic 5 Series model is undoubtedly very good,
such a record performance with respect to dynamics would not be possible. This
is why the M5 is also totally unique with regard to its suspension.

Many detail solutions and changes turn the 5 Series into an M5.

Consequently, the suspension and its electronic assistants have been either
exclusively developed for the new M5, undergone extensive modifications or
adapted to the special M performance. For example, the M5's running gear is by
no means a lowered 5 Series suspension. Instead, it is an optimised design
created from scratch. The suspension assisting systems, some of which have the
same name as those of the 5 Series, have been optimised for this vehicle. On
the one hand, this suspension contributes greatly to the M5 being the
technological culmination of the successful BMW 5 Series. On the other hand, it
clearly demonstrates that the M5 is a unique model with a distinctive
appearance.

Variable M differential lock.

The M5 has a variable, torque-sensing differential lock bestowing the vehicle
with a high level of driving stability and optimum traction, above all when
accelerating out of bends. Even in extremely demanding driving situations, i.e.
when there are major differences in the coefficients of friction at the driven
wheels, it offers a decisive advantage in terms of traction. A further
advantage is that it instantly builds up an increasing locking power if the
speed difference between the driven wheels rises, thus guaranteeing optimum
forward progress at all times.

Only featured in the M5:
DSC with two selectable driving dynamics programs.

A new generation of the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) has been especially
developed for the M5. The DSC system can be deactivated by pressing a button on
the selector lever cover. The driving dynamics programs are pre-selected in the
so-called MDrive and can be called up using the MDrive button on the steering
wheel. Whilst the first DSC mode by and large corresponds to that of the 5
Series, the second mode - the M Dynamic Mode - is highly appreciated by
sports-minded drivers.

EDC: the spectrum ranges from sportingly firm to comfortable.

The M5's Electronic Damper Control (EDC) enables the driver to choose from
three programs (comfort, normal and sport), thereby adjusting the suspension
characteristics accordingly. The driver can operate the EDC function via the
MDrive button on the steering wheel or the push button next to the SMG selector
lever.

Power button activates engine characteristics 'on demand'.

The driver often does not need the M5's full performance and maximum agility,
for example in city traffic. This is why the markedly comfortable P400
performance program with an engine output of 400 bhp is automatically activated
whenever the engine is started. At the push of a button (the so-called Power
button on the selector lever cover), the ten-cylinder powerplant's full power
is at the driver's disposal. The accelerator pedal kinematics adopt spontaneous
characteristics, giving free rein, in the P500 program, to the sporty driver
and eliciting, in the P500 sport program, uncompromising racing pleasure.

High-performance brakes derived from motor sport.

To complement its immense power output, the M5 is equipped with a generously
sized high-performance braking system with perforated, weight-optimised
compound brake discs. The aluminium twin-piston sliding callipers (analogous to
the BMW 7 Series), which have been optimised for minimum weight and maximum
stiffness, help the M5 to achieve stopping distances similar to those of
red-blooded sports cars: deceleration from 62 mph to 0 is accomplished in under
36 metres, the braking distance from 124 mph to a standstill is less than 140
metres.

The high-performance business express.

A wolf in sheep-s clothing - this description would fit if the basic 5 Series,
and particularly the new M5, looked 'tame' when viewed from outside. In fact,
the 5 Series already looks sporty, elegant and athletic. It is no coincidence
that this 5 Series represents BMW's dynamic business class. The M5 is set apart
from the basic model by a host of striking and hidden details, which further
add to its powerful, sporty and dynamic looks. An athlete in business attire
would be an apt description of the new M5.

Exterior with understatement.

The differences in design versus the basic 5 Series are discreet but
consistent, giving the M5 a surprisingly high level of uniqueness in terms of
looks, without questioning the common genes with the BMW model series. The
modified front and rear aprons are instant eye catchers. Another difference is
the modified side sills and the somewhat more prominent wheel arches.
Traditionally, the M differs from the 'normal' BMW in its exclusive exterior
mirror design, the four tailpipes, which have also become an unmistakable
feature of all M vehicles, and the exclusive wheel design. For the first time,
the M5 sports very attractive gills which are incorporated into the front side
panel.

An even sportier interior.

The M5 comes with a leather interior in three different colours, which makes
it look even more sophisticated than the lavishly equipped basic model or - for
an extra price - with a full leather interior, which looks absolutely stunning.
Further important differences versus the 5 Series are the instrument cluster,
the optional M-specific head-up display, the steering wheel with MDrive buttons
and the redesigned centre console.

Business express for everyday use.

All vehicles made by BMW M GmbH are very convenient for everyday motoring. This
particularly applies to the M5: despite its awe-inspiring performance which is
reminiscent of that of a racing car, it has remained an elegant and comfortable
saloon perfectly suitable for longer journeys, an integral characteristic of
BMW 5 Series cars. Thus, one can say that the M5's racing ambitions neither
impair driving comfort, active and passive safety, nor do they reduce the space
available for passengers and luggage. Even in terms of consumption and
environmental compatibility, the M5 is a real paragon - just like all BMW
automobiles.

BMW Great Britain has announced first details of the forthcoming BMW M5.
Faithfully resembling the Concept M5 revealed at the Geneva Motorshow in March
2004, the fourth generation of 'businessman's express' will be the most
powerful BMW road car ever built, generating 507bhp and surpassing the magical
100bhp per litre mark.

Translating BMW's Formula 1 experience directly into a road car, the new BMW M5
is powered by a normally aspirated five-litre V10 engine - a first for BMW -
with the two five-cylinder banks arranged at a 90-degree angle. Redlined at
8,250rpm, the 507bhp and 520Nm of torque propels the car from zero to 62mph in
4.7seconds and to 124mph in 15 seconds before reaching an electronically
limited top speed of 155mph. Without the limiter, the new M5 would be capable
of an awe-inspiring 205mph. These levels of performance, when combined with
the lightweight aluminium chassis and body panels from the 5 Series, ensure the
new M5 can lap the infamous 'Nordschleife' at the Nürburgring in approximately
eight minutes - a time rarely achieved even by high performance sports cars.

The new BMW M5 produces over 25 per cent more power than the outgoing M5 that
itself set the benchmark as the ultimate sports saloon. This is made possible,
in part, by the bi-VANOS variable valve timing and individual throttle
butterflies fitted to the new car. Ensuring an optimum charge from every
combustion cycle these features increase performance, flexibility and
responsiveness, offer inspired fuel consumption and emissions figures and
ensure the car exceeds EU4 standards.

Power is transmitted through the world's first production car seven-speed
sequential gearbox with Drivelogic, changing gears 20 per cent faster than the
previous generation SMG transmission. The gearbox offers eleven different
change patterns, six of which allow the drive to vary the speed and response of
gear change in the manual selection mode and five in the automatic mode. The
sixth pattern in manual is reserved for the Launch Control function, giving the
driver the fastest possible acceleration from standstill.

The new M5 also features a new DSC traction control system specifically
developed for the car. Offering three settings, the default mode offers
drivers the high levels of performance and stability you would expect of a car
wearing the 'M' badge. But by pressing the DSC button once the car reverts to M
Dynamic Mode to allow an enthusiastic driver the ability to push the M5 to the
absolute limits of traction, even permitting some sideslip and countersteering.
If the DSC button is pressed again and held down DSC is completely disengaged.

on the steering wheel, offering a one-touch function that changes the settings
on the car to an enhanced sporting character. This set-up is formatted via
iDrive with the owner choosing the preferred SMG, Electronic Damper Control and
DSC modes and, if specified, the rate of support the Active Seat Control side
bolsters offer. Once programmed, the driver just presses the MDrive button on
the steering wheel to transform the character of the M5.

The function of the standard fit Head-up Display is also altered when the
MDrive button is activated. The default setting sees speed, navigation
instructions, check control messages and cruise control settings projected onto
the windscreen in the driver's line of sight. However, if MDrive is activated
the display changes to a rev counter including vehicle speed that both flash at
the driver when the next gear needs to be selected.

While the chassis, suspension and steering of the M5 are based on the design of
the 5 Series, almost all components are new. The M5 also features a variable M
differential lock that offers a high level of driving stability and traction,
especially when accelerating out of high-speed corners. Stopping power in the
M5 is also enhanced courtesy of a high performance braking system with
cross-drilled ventilated discs and twin-piston callipers. This braking system,
in combination with the lightweight materials incorporated in the 1,755kgs car,
ensures that the M5 decelerates from 62mph to zero in just 36 metres or 124mph
to zero is reached in 140 metres.

Visually, the new M5 takes the distinctive looks of the 5 Series to another
level, with modified front and rear aprons and side sills. For the first time
on an M5, the front wings now incorporate an air duct, which helps keep the
engine bay cool during operation, and a new door mirror design. Wider
wheelarches house the exclusive 19-inch M5 wheel design while BMW M's signature
four tailpipes alert drivers behind to the potential of the car in front.

The BMW M5 will be launched in Europe in January 2005, while deliveries of
right-hand-drive models in the UK start in Spring 2005.

World premiere of the new BMW M5's drive system.

Whenever BMW M GmbH presents a new M automobile, the focus of attention is
traditionally on the power unit beneath the bonnet. This is particularly the
case with the new M5: across the world, its V10 engine is considered to be one
of the most fascinating drive concepts featured in a production car.
This technological masterpiece does not only sport the same number of cylinders
as its Formula 1 BMW WilliamsF1 racing counterpart, but also shares its
high-revving concept. As is the case with all high-performance normally
aspirated engines made by BMW M, this power unit generates enormous pulling
force over the entire speed range.

First high-revving V10 engine to be featured in a regular-production saloon.
The V10 is the only high-revving power unit to be featured in a
series-production car. The M5's engine has ten cylinders, a cubic capacity of 5
litres and produces a maximum output of 507 bhp and a maximum torque of 520
Newton metres, making the M5 the most powerful final production model in the
BMW line-up. The segment of powerful sports saloons was introduced 20 years ago
with the presentation of the first M5 and this new engine once again sets the
benchmark in this particular segment.
There is, however, more to it than pure performance. What is important for M
automobiles is acceleration and driving dynamics, the latter which is dependent
on the actual forward thrust and the vehicle's weight. The drive forces at the
driven wheels are significantly influenced by the engine torque and the
transmission ratio. The high-revving concept caters for an
optimum transmission ratio, thus guaranteeing an impressive forward thrust.

The perfect choice: high-revving concept.
For the BMW M engineers the compact, high-revving normally aspirated engine was
the ideal choice. With a red line of 8,250 rpm, the ten-cylinder engine has
ventured into terrain which has so far been reserved for red-blooded racing
cars. Compared to the previous M5 eight-cylinder engine, performance has
increased by more than 25 per cent. The M5 has also surpassed the magical 100
bhp per litre limit, its specific output being on par with that of racing cars.

A masterpiece in engine construction.
BMW, one of the leaders in engine construction, has made a name for itself
primarily as a manufacturer of inline engines. The two five-cylinder banks of
the V10 are arranged at an angle of 90¡ã to achieve a mass balance of the
crankshaft drive, which is optimized for low vibration and increased comfort.
For reasons of stiffness, that is due to the high loads resulting from
combustion pressure, engine speed and vibrations, a bedplate design has been
chosen for the crankcase. For an optimum alignment of the crankshaft, grey-cast
iron inserts have been integrated into the aluminium bedplate, which also serve
to enhance acoustics, increase vibrational comfort and ensure a high oil supply
rate. The extremely stiff crankshaft is supported by six bearings. In the new
M5, it is the first time that BMW has used a bedplate design for a production V
engine.

Every gram counts in lightweight construction.
The one-piece aluminium cylinder heads of the V10 engine are arranged in banks.
The V10 power unit features four valves per cylinder, a layout which is typical
of BMW engines. All valve train components are of low mass. Thus, for example,
the M engines feature for the first time low-weight, flow-optimized 5 mm-shaft
valves, spherical valve tappets with hydraulic valve
play compensation and single valve springs. All this results in a considerable
mass reduction, which is a prerequisite for the realisation of the high-revving
concept.

High-pressure bi-VANOS for an optimum charge cycle.
The bi-VANOS variable valve timing featured in the new M5 engine ensures
an optimum charge cycle, thus helping to achieve extremely short adjustment
times. This means in practice: increased performance, an improved torque curve,
optimum responsiveness, lower consumption and fewer emissions. Thanks to the
bi-VANOS technology, intake and outlet valves are always opened and closed at
precisely the right moment.

Individual throttle butterflies help the engine to breathe freely.
The naturally aspirated engine uses ten flow-optimized intake trumpets to
"breathe in" air from two intake plenums. Each cylinder has its own throttle, a
feature typical of racing cars. All throttles are actuated simultaneously and
are electronically controlled in order to make the engine highly responsive in
the lower speed range, as well as to achieve an immediate response of the
vehicle at the high end of the performance spectrum.

Dual exhaust system made of stainless steel.
The exhaust system of the new M5 engine is made of seamless stainless steel and
has a dual-flow design all the way to the silencers. The exhaust gases finally
leave the system through four tailpipes which are what make the rear end of the
M vehicles so unmistakable. The exhaust system complies with the European EU4
and the US LEV2 emission standards.

The engine control module: the first of its kind in the world.
The MS S65 engine management system is the central factor behind the V10's
outstanding performance and emission data. With more than 1,000 individual
components, this engine management system is unparalleled in its package
density. Its processors are the most powerful ones which are currently approved
for use in automobiles, as high engine speeds and comprehensive management and
control tasks demand the utmost from this system. Receiving more than 50 input
signals, this system calculates for each individual cylinder and for each
individual cycle the optimum ignition point, the ideal cylinder fill, the
injection quantity and the injection point. At the same time this system
calculates and makes the necessary adjustments for the optimum camshaft angle
and the optimum position of the ten individual throttles.

Highlight in engine management: ionic current technology.
The ionic current technology featured by the engine management unit is a
technological highlight which serves to detect engine knock, misfiring and
combustion misses. Utilizing the spark plug in each cylinder, this system helps
to pinpoint engine knock, to check for correct ignition and to detect any
ignition misses. Thus the spark plug has a dual function - as an actuator for
the ignition and as a sensor for monitoring the combustion process. The ionic
current measuring is done directly during the combustion process. The so-called
ionic current satellite receives signals from the five spark plugs of each
cylinder bank. Dependent on the load, it amplifies these signals and transmits
them to the engine management system for analysis, which, for example,
perfectly adjusts the ignition point of each cylinder via knock
control to the combustion process. All this results in benefits for the driver
of the new M5 - lower fuel consumption, higher torque and enhanced performance.

Seven-speed SMG gearbox conveys M power to the tarmac.
The high-revving concept only succeeds in combination with a gearbox which
translates the torque available to the engine, by means of a short overall
transmission ratio, into optimized forward thrust.
The seven-speed SMG gearbox is precisely the right transmission to ideally
convey the V10 engine's power via the drive train to the wheels. BMW M is the
first manufacturer worldwide to offer a seven-speed sequential gearbox with
drivelogic function. Even more highly perfected than the previous six-speed
transmission, the seven-speed SMG gearbox enables manual gear selection with
ultra-short shifting times as well as comfortable cruising thanks to automatic
gear selection. The purpose of the additional seventh gear is to reduce engine
speed and torque gaps.

New SMG gearbox's speed up by 20 per cent.
With the seven-speed SMG gearbox, gears can be changed using the central
gearshift lever or the so-called paddles on the steering wheel. Compared to the
previous SMG transmission, changing gears is 20 per cent faster with the new
SMG generation. Never before has it been quicker to change gears with a
transmission of this kind. The advantage for the M5 driver: Gear change is
smooth and accomplished at a speed impossible to reach even by the
most proficient driver, thus making the inevitable power flow interruptions
when changing gears hardly noticeable. The M5 delivers an almost jerk-free
performance when accelerating from a standstill to its top speed.

Drivelogic: the driver determines the SMG's characteristics for changing gears.
Thanks to the SMG's drivelogic function, the driver can choose from eleven gear
change options, which enable him to adapt the SMG's characteristics to his very
own style of motoring. Six of these programs can be preselected in the
sequential manual gearbox mode (S mode), the spectrum ranging from balanced
dynamic to very sporty. With the gearbox in the S mode, the driver always
shifts gears manually. Whenever the driver activates the Launch Control
function, the SMG Drivelogic shifts gears shortly before the maximum engine
speed is reached at precisely the right moment and with optimum slip until the
M5 reaches its top speed.
In the D (Drive) automatic gearshift mode, the transmission shifts the seven
gears automatically, depending on the program selected, the driving situation,
the road speed and the position of the accelerator pedal.

SMG for increased safety and comfort.
The seven-speed SMG gearbox not only supports the driver in achieving motor
sports performance, but also offers scores of safety features. In critical
situations, when the driver shifts down on a slippery surface, for example, the
gearbox opens the clutch in the fraction of a second in order to prevent the M5
from swerving out of control in the event of excessive drag torque at the
driven wheels. Further functions are the climbing, which prevents the car from
rolling backwards during hill starts as well as the hill detection, which
adjusts the shift points on gradients and descents. This prevents gear hunting
when going uphill. When driving downhill, the hill detection holds the lower
gears for longer in order to make effective use of the engine's braking power.

Production of high-performance engines - engine production at its best.
The high-performance power unit featured in the new BMW M5 reflects the
engineering competence of the BMW engine construction specialists.
The most powerful production engine in the company's history is manufactured
along with other BMW special engines on a highly flexible production line at
the BMW plant in Munich.
The wide selection of products requires very agile processes and demandsthe
utmost flexibility, profound product knowledge and skilful craftsmanship from
the qualified staff.
The most stringent quality standards are met in the mechanical production and
assembly of the high-revving aggregate. As the materials and components of the
high-revving engine are exposed to heavy loads, extremely high demands are
placed on surface quality and production tolerances.
Some parts and components are processed at a precision of up to 1¨M1000
millimetres.
The coding of the core components enables the staff to keep track of each
individual component from goods receipt to processing and through to
installation. A storage medium is provided for each engine to ensure, by data
transfer to the assembly stations, that the right parts and tools are used.

Following 20 years production and three generations of the 'businessman's
express', BMW has shed a little light on the next generation M5 with the
unveiling of the BMW Concept M5 at the Geneva Motorshow (March 2, 2004).

Translating Formula 1 technology directly into a road car, the BMW Concept M5
is powered by a V10 engine - a BMW first. Delivering around 500bhp and 500Nm
of torque, the Concept M5 is capable of completing the zero to 62mph sprint in
well under five seconds.

Such impressive levels of performance are made possible by specially modified
Bi-VANOS camshaft timing, individual throttle butterflies and engine
electronics derived from the BMW Williams F1 car. These are linked to an
enhanced DSC traction control system, a variable limited slip differential and
adapted brakes to ensure that the Concept M5 offers an exhilarating, yet safe,
driving experience.

Alongside the engine developments, Formula 1 technology is carried over to the
gearbox. The Concept M5 is equipped with a seven-speed Sequential Manual
Gearbox - another first for BMW.

Under the skin, the BMW Concept M5 is based on the 5 Series saloon launched in
2003, both cars benefiting from an aluminium chassis and lightweight aluminium
front body panels. Visually, the BMW Concept M5 stands apart from its
'standard' 5 Series brethren by the addition of modified front and rear air
dams, side sills, side air vents and four exhaust tailpipes. Additionally, it
has M alloy wheels of an exclusive design measuring 8.5J x 19 on the
front and 9.5J x 19 on the rear, with 255 / 40 ZR 19 and 285 / 35 ZR 19 tyres
respectively.

While the BMW Concept M5 is strictly a concept car, a production version of the
car could be available within a year.
