The #46 is now 46 – and BMW M has the perfect present to mark the birthday of nine-time motorcycle world champion and current BMW M works driver Valentino Rossi (ITA): the BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 (fuel consumption combined: 10.2 l/100 km [27.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 232 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO₂ class: G)*. This exclusive edition, produced at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, is available in two distinctive design variants: Sport and Style. “The Doctor” himself was personally involved in the design process for the two versions, both of which will be built in a limited run of 46 cars. The world-famous number, which is Rossi’s trademark, features prominently in several places on and inside the BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 – for example, on the doors and the roof, which is made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).

Purchasing a BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 also comes with a once-in-a-lifetime experience comprising an exclusive, personal meeting with Valentino Rossi at his home – the VR46 Motor Ranch in Tavullia (ITA) – and a BMW M Driving Experience at the Misano race circuit (ITA).

Exclusive BMW Individual paint finishes and special exterior and interior details
One way in which the BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 differs from the BMW M4 CS (fuel consumption combined: 10.2 l/100 km [27.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 232 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO₂ class: G)* is its two exclusive BMW Individual paint finishes, which blend perfectly with the many exposed carbon surfaces, such as the indents in the bonnet. Other distinctive features include a host of exclusive exterior and interior details. The overall colour concept of the two design versions is inspired by Valentino Rossi’s preferred tones and expressive visual style. For example, the “Sport” has a finish in Marina Bay Blue metallic, while both sides of the car display an outsized “46” in the darker Tanzanite Blue metallic. In the “Style” design variant, the bodywork comes in matt Frozen Tanzanite Blue metallic, with the “46” this time in Frozen Marina Bay Blue metallic on both sides. In a nod to Rossi's favoured colour scheme, the BMW M kidney grille outline and one of the V spokes in the forged M light-alloy wheels – which, as on racing cars, indicates the position of the tyre valve – are painted in bright yellow, as are the brake callipers with M logo and an accent strip over the door frames of the “Sport” variant. The carbon-fibre roof – like the sides of the car, painted by hand – is adorned with a large VR46 logo (also in yellow, of course) and Rossi’s signature. The tailgate features VR46 lettering.

The yellow accents continue in the interior of the BMW M4 CS Edition VR46, which is predominantly Night Blue. The M Carbon bucket seats come with Merino leather upholstery in the Black/Night Blue colour combination. The Sao Paulo Yellow of the Alcantara shoulder area creates an exclusive contrast. The head restraints, like the door sill trims, feature a prominent yellow VR46 logo. Furthermore, the M Alcantara steering wheel with three-spoke design and flat-bottomed rim comes with yellow contrast stitching and a yellow centre marker. On the carbon-fibre centre console of all examples of the Edition VR46 is a badge stating “1/46”, identifying each Sport or Style car as one of the limited run.

Six-cylinder in-line engine with 405 kW/550 hp
The beating heart of the BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 is a high-revving 3.0-litre, six‑cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. This power unit has had track performance as its raison d’être from day one of its development. The increase in the maximum charge pressure of the two mono-scroll turbochargers to 2.1 bar and model-specific tweaks to the engine management mean the edition model’s engine now generates 405 kW/550 hp, which is relayed to the road via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, the M xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system and the Active M Differential. Lightning-fast power development and optimised traction enable the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, and from 0 to 200 km/h in 11.1 seconds. When applying the “1-foot rollout” method**, the figures read 3.1 seconds for the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h and 10.8 seconds for 0 to 200 km/h. Acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h takes 2.6 seconds in fourth gear and 3.3 seconds in fifth. The top speed of the edition model, which comes with the M Driver’s Package as standard, is electronically limited to 302 km/h.

Contributing to the excellent engine response is a model-specific engine mounting with increased spring rates. The rigid connection between the power unit and the vehicle’s structure enables particularly direct transmission of its power to the drivetrain every time the driver presses the accelerator. The oil supply system – like the cooling system – is designed to handle the specific challenges of track use, including consistently high revs and extreme lateral acceleration. The engine’s power delivery is accompanied by the emotionally stirring soundtrack generated by the dual-branch exhaust system, which features electrically controlled flaps, a titanium rear silencer with weight-minimising design and – in customary M fashion – two pairs of tailpipes painted in matt black.

Model-specific tuning for chassis technology and control systems
The chassis technology for the new BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 has been tuned precisely to the performance characteristics of the engine, the overall vehicle concept and its weight distribution. The individually tuned axle kinematics and bespoke wheel camber settings, dampers, auxiliary springs and anti-roll bars serve to optimise steering precision, transmission of lateral control forces when cornering, spring and damping response, and wheel location. The electronically controlled dampers of the adaptive M suspension likewise come in a model-specific set-up, as do the electromechanical M Servotronic steering with variable ratio, and the integrated braking system.

46 – the trademark of an exceptional racer
The number 46 has accompanied Valentino Rossi throughout his extraordinary career as a motorcycle racer and racing driver, and has become even more of a trademark than his nickname “The Doctor” or “Il Dottore”. Having seen his father Graziano Rossi race motorcycles with number 46, Valentino also opted for 46 from the start of his career – and never even swapped it for number 1 when he became world champion, as would have been his right.

Valentino Rossi claimed his first world title in the 125cc class in 1997. Two years later, he added the title in the 250cc class. In 2000, he took the step up to what was the top Grand Prix category, the 500cc class, in which he was crowned world champion in 2001. The following year, this category was replaced by the MotoGP class, and Rossi remained the dominant force. By 2005 he had added a further four world titles, and numbers eight and nine were to follow in 2008 and 2009. With these nine world championships and no fewer than 115 Grand Prix victories to his name, he is one of the three most successful motorcycle racers in history and a global motor sport and style icon. VR46 has become a worldwide trademark – and Rossi’s home town of Tavullia has even reduced its speed limit from the usual 50 km/h to 46 km/h in his honour.

BMW M works driver since the start of 2023
When the curtain fell on his motorcycle career at the finale to the 2021 season, Valentino Rossi turned his attention solely to car racing, having already attended multiple tests in Formula 1 race cars and made guest appearances in rallies and endurance races. Since the start of the 2023 season, he has been a BMW M works driver, plying his trade at the wheel of a BMW M4 GT3 for BMW M Team WRT in series including the GT World Challenge Europe and the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) – which includes the 24 Hours of Le Mans (FRA). At the start of February 2025, he finished runner-up in a BMW M4 GT3 at the Bathurst 12 Hour (AUS), the opening round of this season’s Intercontinental GT Challenge (IGTC).

Filling the space between the racetrack experience and soul-stirring road performance, the new BMW M4 CS celebrates racing passion with lightweight design elements for every day driving comfort.

With an increased engine output of 550 hp, model-specific chassis tuning and minimised weight – helped by numerous components made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) – the BMW M4 CS (fuel consumption, combined 27.7 mpg; CO2 emissions combined: 232 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO2 class: G) bring an extra edge to the BMW M4 Coupé vehicle concept of four seats, everyday practicality, advanced equipment and exclusive design features.

Production of the new BMW M4 CS will start in July 2024 at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, with order books opening in late May. The BMW M4 CS is priced from £117,100 RRP with first deliveries in the UK arriving in Autumn 2024.

The new BMW M4 CS invites owners to experience the iconic M feeling in all its depth and breadth. Its distinctive character profile places it exactly midway between the new BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined 28.0 – 28.3 mpg; CO2 emissions, combined: 229 – 226 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO2 class: G) – complete with its recently introduced performance, design and equipment upgrades – and the 1,000-unit limited-run BMW M4 CSL special edition (fuel consumption, combined 28.0 – 28.5 mpg; CO2 emissions, combined: 227 – 224 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO2 class: G). The performance of the new BMW M4 CS is the product of M-typical racing genes, which offer constant reminders of their presence in everyday driving on the road and enjoy full expression out on the track.

The model-specific performance characteristics of the six-cylinder in-line engine in the BMW M4 CS, an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive infuse the new model with dynamic poise and assurance. Instantaneous power delivery and optimised traction enable acceleration of 0 to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds. In testing at the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit – the ultimate barometer for all BMW M cars – the new BMW M4 CS recorded an official time of 7 min. 21.989 sec. for the full 20.832-kilometre (12.943-mile) lap.

Six-cylinder in-line engine developed for motor sport.

The race-focused character of the new BMW M4 CS is immediately recognisable. Powered by a high-revving six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, the 3.0-litre has track performance from day one of its development. With a rigid crankcase featuring sleeve-free, closed-deck construction and a forged lightweight crankshaft which displays exceptional torsional resistance, both giving the engine its rapid power delivery. The wire-arc sprayed iron coating of the likewise weight-saving cylinder bores reduces frictional losses and the cylinder head has a 3D-printed core. This additive manufacturing process allows the coolant ducts to be routed in an optimum arrangement for temperature management that would be impossible to achieve using conventional metal casting methods. And the system of oil supply – like the cooling system – is designed to handle the specific challenges of track use, including consistently high revs and extreme lateral acceleration.

Bespoke performance characteristics, distinctive sound.

Racing technology provides the foundations for the extraordinary potential of the six-cylinder in-line engine, which produces maximum output of 550 hp from under the bonnet of the new BMW M4 CS.

Representing a 20 hp increase from the BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive, the power boost was achieved through targeted revisions to the engine’s M TwinPower Turbo technology and required no concessions in stability or durability. The adjustments focused on raising the maximum charge pressure of the two mono-scroll turbochargers to 2.1 bar and making model-specific tweaks to the engine management.

The upgrades also produce a specific take on familiar M performance characteristics, with instantaneous power delivery that continues unabated through to the upper echelons of the rev range a particularly dominant theme. The engine in the new BMW M4 CS puts its peak torque of 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) on tap from just 2,750 rpm up to 5,950 rpm and develops maximum output at 6,250 rpm and has a 7,200 rpm red line. Contributing to the excellent engine response is a model-specific engine mounting with increased spring rates; the rigid connection between the power unit and the vehicle’s structure enables direct transmission of its power to the drivetrain every time the driver presses the accelerator.

The instantly available power and high-revving character of the engine pave the way for imposing acceleration figures. The new BMW M4 CS dashes from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds, while 0 to 124 mph takes 11.1 seconds. The mid-range sprint from 50 – 75 mph is dealt with in 2.6 seconds in 4th gear and 3.3 seconds in 5th gear. The top speed of the special edition is electronically limited to 188 mph.

The engine’s power delivery is accompanied by an emotionally stirring soundtrack generated by the dual-branch exhaust system, which features electrically controlled flaps, a titanium rear silencer with weight-minimising design and – in customary M fashion – two pairs of tailpipes painted in matt Black.

The engine’s acoustic presence adjusts to the powertrain setting selected via the M Setup menu. In SPORT and SPORT+ modes, the engine note gains unmissable racing car undertones, injecting aural drama during gear changes and the accompanying adjustments in rev speed.

Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, M xDrive and active M differential convert outstanding power into imposing performance.

The engine’s drive torque is relayed to all four wheels of the new BMW M4 CS via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, operated using either the M-specific gear selector lever on the centre console or the carbon-fibre shift paddles on the steering wheel. The Drivelogic button integrated into the selector lever allows the driver to alter the transmission’s shift characteristics as desired, with a choice of settings available: one comfort-oriented, one for sports performance and one optimised specifically for track use.

The engine’s power is channelled onto the road by the M xDrive system. This intelligent all-wheel-drive technology uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case to distribute the engine’s power smoothly between the front and rear wheels – and to maximise traction, agility, and directional stability in any situation. The multi-plate clutch’s oil supply has been optimised to ensure the all-wheel-drive system continues to perform effectively even during ultra-intense track sessions.

The M xDrive system’s rear-wheel bias and the way it teams up with the Active M Differential at the rear axle – whose operation is also fully variable – add to the signature M feeling when accelerating or powering through corners. Furthermore, the M Setup menu allows 4WD Sport mode to be selected, which directs an even greater proportion of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels. Drivers can switch off the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system altogether and engage pure rear-wheel drive via 2WD mode.

Model-specific tuning for the chassis technology and control systems.

The chassis technology for the new BMW M4 CS has been tuned precisely to the performance characteristics of the engine, the overall vehicle concept, and its weight distribution.

The individually tuned axle kinematics and bespoke wheel camber settings, dampers, auxiliary springs and anti-roll bars serve to optimise steering precision, transmission of lateral control forces when cornering, spring and damping response and wheel location.

The electronically controlled dampers of the adaptive M suspension on the new BMW M4 CS likewise come in a model-specific setup, as do its electromechanical M Servotronic steering with variable ratio and its integrated braking system. The settings for the DSC system and M Dynamic Mode have also been purposefully geared to the demands of dynamic circuit driving. M Dynamic Mode gives drivers extra leeway to explore the car’s dynamic limits by pushing back the intervention points for the DSC system’s various stabilising measures. When the driver adopts a sporty driving style, the resultant wheel slip ensures even better power transmission and helps to propel the car down the road with extra assurance.

Exclusive forged light-alloy wheels and track tyres fitted as standard.

The special-edition model is equipped as standard with M Compound brakes with callipers painted in a choice of Red or Black while the callipers for the optional M Carbon ceramic brakes can be specified in a Red or matt Gold painted finish. The new BMW M4 CS comes as standard with forged M light-alloy wheels in an exclusive V-spoke design – available in either in matt Gold Bronze or matt Black.

The lightweight wheels (19-inch at the front axle and 20-inch at the rear) are fitted as standard with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres or optionally with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R, to maximise the performance experience on track. Offering outstanding lateral control and directional stability, precise steering feel and optimum traction, these track tyres – in the dimensions 275/35 ZR19 (front) and 285/30 ZR20 (rear) – represent a compelling proposition – while customers intending to use their BMW M4 CS for day-to-day driving can select high-performance tyres in the same size as a no-cost option.

Intensive application of lightweight design with generous use of CFRP.

Extensive lightweight design measures play a major part in moulding the performance qualities and exclusive character of the new BMW M4 CS. The use of components made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) is of key importance here – the carbon-fibre roofs low weight brings the car’s centre of gravity closer to the road and therefore enhancing agility and cornering dynamics. The bonnet, front splitter, front air intakes, exterior mirror caps, rear diffuser and Gurney-style rear spoiler are also made from this lightweight, high-tech material.

Intelligent lightweight design is also evident in the interior, with the centre console, shift paddles on the steering wheel and other interior trim elements made from CFRP. The special-edition model comes as standard with M Carbon bucket seats, whose weight-minimising construction is highlighted by the use of CFRP in the structural elements of the seat cushion and backrest, as well as in the eye-catching cut-outs in the side bolsters and below the head restraints. Added to which, the exhaust system on the new BMW M4 CS is more than four kilograms lighter, thanks to the use of a titanium rear silencer. These lightweight design measures bring the car’s weight down by 20 kilograms compared to the BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive.

M front end strut brace maximises torsional rigidity.

The M front end strut brace – also engineered for lightness – increases torsional rigidity and improve handling through dynamically taken corners. The cast aluminium elements connecting the spring strut towers to the front end feature a weight-optimised geometry that has been precisely matched – with the help of numerical models – to the forces applied in various driving situations.

Exclusive design features promise thrilling performance.

The new BMW M4 CS is offered in two new BMW Individual paint finishes; Riviera Blue solid and Frozen Isle of Man Green metallic, while exposed carbon fibre for the roof, bonnet indents, front splitter, front air intakes, M exterior mirror caps, rear spoiler and rear apron highlight the models distinctive character. Together with the Black side skirts and M gills, the CFRP elements provide a stunning contrast against the bold new paint finishes. The new BMW M4 CS can also be specified in M Brooklyn Grey metallic and Sapphire Black metallic.

The vehicle’s front-end sports a weight-saving, frameless BMW kidney grille that was designed especially for this mode, including red contour lines and the “M4 CS” badging on the upper of the two horizontal grille bars. Both model badge at the front and its counterpart on the boot lid have black surfaces with a red border.

Eye-catching headlights add another flourish to the front end of the new BMW M4 CS. Their sculptural light icons illuminate yellow instead of white – both during the Welcome Light Animation and while low beam or high beam is switched on – while the rear lights of the BMW M4 CS make a visual statement with their striking appearance during the hours of darkness. As well as generating a powerful radiance, their Laserlight technology is marked out by intricate fibre optic bundles inside the light units, which have a “free-floating” appearance and are illuminated by a laser diode. The result is a prominent 3D effect which was first seen in the BMW M4 CSL high-performance special edition and now brings an exclusive aesthetic to the BMW M4 CS.

Racing flair in the cockpit: M Carbon bucket seats with exclusive design cues.

The cockpit of the BMW M4 CS focuses solely on delivering an exhilarating driving experience, by blending its distinct racing aura with comfort features for everyday driving. The standard M Alcantara steering wheel in three-spoke design with a flat-bottomed rim offers a perfect combination of secure grip for dynamic driving manoeuvres and impressive comfort on longer journeys. Its red centre marker and CFRP shift paddles add an authentic racing flavour to the cockpit. The standard M Carbon bucket seats in a model-specific design also fuse racing-car feel and long-distance comfort to exceptional effect. Fully electric and heated, they feature integral head restraints and an illuminated model badge.

The M Carbon bucket seats in the BMW M4 CS are upholstered in Merino leather and come in an exclusive design with a Black/Red colour scheme and distinctive contrast stitching. This bi-colour finish is carried over into the rear compartment of the high-performance sports car and both the door panels in the front and the rear side panelling are trimmed entirely in Black leather. Red “CS” lettering on the centre console, M seat belts with contrast stitching in the BMW M GmbH colours, an Anthracite-coloured headliner, interior trim strips in Carbon Fibre finish and door sill plates with the inscription “M4 CS” all add to the exclusive ambience inside the car.

BMW Curved Display with M-specific readouts, new BMW iDrive.

The latest version of the BMW iDrive display and control/operation system based on BMW Operating System 8.5 provides intuitive control of numerous vehicle functions and digital services. The BMW Curved Display features M-specific readouts and is angled towards the driver, helping them to focus on the road ahead. The fully digital screen grouping is formed by a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches. The familiar M Shift Lights appear at the top of the information display, while the driving stability system, M xDrive and traction control modes are all indicated in the lower area. Special widgets containing information on the current vehicle setup, as well as tyre pressures and temperature can be added to the control display’s home screen.

The upgraded BMW iDrive also comprises the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and has been designed with particular emphasis on touch and voice control. Besides the M-specific graphics, the system also now features a new way of operating the automatic climate control: the temperature and ventilation settings as well as the seat heating can be controlled either by touch using a special menu option in the lower area of the control display or by voice command.

Setup button for customising vehicle configuration, M Drive Professional with M Drift Analyser and M Laptimer as standard.

The M-specific Setup button on the centre console enables direct access to the settings options for the engine, chassis, steering, braking system and M xDrive. Two individually configurable setup variants can be stored permanently, together with the preferred settings for the engine note, the DSC system, the Automatic Start/Stop function and the shift characteristics of the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, and then retrieved using one of the two M buttons on the steering wheel.

Also fitted as standard in the new BMW M4 CS is the M Drive Professional system. This includes track-optimised functions such as the M Drift Analyser, which evaluates and records purposefully executed cornering slides, and the M Laptimer, which provides detailed data on laps of the track and allows sporty-minded drivers to share their exploits with the community. It additionally comes with M Traction Control, whose ten stages also play their part in helping drivers enjoy the pleasure of driving the car enthusiastically on the track.

The M Mode button on the centre console is another tool in the M Drive Professional package and can be used to adjust both driver assistance system responses and the content shown in the information display and Head-Up Display. As well as the ROAD and SPORT settings, the BMW M4 CS also offers a TRACK mode designed exclusively for use on race circuits.

Top-class options for added pleasure and comfort in everyday driving.

The specification of the standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional includes the BMW Head-Up Display with M-specific graphics, the cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system, smartphone integration, telephony with wireless charging and a WiFi interface. The BMW Drive Recorder is available optionally.

The new BMW M4 CS additionally offers customers a select choice of comfort features and driver assistance systems. Comfort Access, an alarm system, two-zone automatic climate control, the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System, Park Distance Control, the Parking Assistant, Front Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning and the Speed Limit Info system are all included as standard, while automatic boot lid operation and the Driving Assistant system can be added as options.

Munich. With a new season in motor sport just around the corner,the collaboration between BMW M Motorsport and toymaker LEGO^® has produced a new Speed Champions set that is destined to capture the imagination. The new arrival will fuel excitement among younger motor sport fans from nine years of age, as well as laying on an authentic build-and-play experience for more mature collectors. With 676 pieces in total, this detailed set enables builders to recreate not one but two current competition racing cars from BMW M Motorsport: the BMW M Hybrid V8 and the BMW M4 GT3. These two racers will front BMW M Motorsport’s bid for glory at events including the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 15/16 June 2024.

The new miniature members of the Speed Champions series stand out as carefully constructed replicas of the original cars. Authentic design features include the characteristic BMW M Motorsport paintwork, prominent diffuser elements, visually striking exhaust tailpipes and eye-catching spoilers, as well as an interior crafted with fine attention to detail. Plus, the roofs of the two miniatures can be taken off to allow the racing driver figures supplied as part of the set to be inserted into their respective cockpits. The stage is set for thrilling wheel-to-wheel racing in kids’ bedrooms far and wide.

Detailed replicas for racing fans young and old.
Driven by the vision of reproducing iconic racing cars with LEGO^® bricks, the LEGO^® Speed Champions series has been bringing smiles to the faces of car fans and collectors of all ages for almost ten years now. The new model set bringing together the BMW M Hybrid V8 and BMW M4 GT3 fits in with this tradition and enables additional target groups to experience the allure of motor sport and the engineering expertise of BMW M.

BMW M Motorsport: back on the big stage.
BMW M Motorsport is celebrating a long-awaited comeback to international prototype racing with the BMW M Hybrid V8. The electrified V8 racer passed its first test of strength last season in the prestigious GTP category of the IMSA series, and this year it will also compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC). Exactly 25 years on from the BMW V12 LMR famously claiming overall victory at Le Mans, the launch of the BMW M Hybrid V8 at the legendary endurance classic opens a new chapter in the BMW brand’s prototype racing history.

BMW M Team WRT is also entering the BMW M4 GT3 in the FIA WEC races over the upcoming season. This means BMW M Motorsport will also be represented in another class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans: While the two BMW M Hybrid V8 cars will do battle in the hypercar category at Le Mans, a pair of BMW M4 GT3 racers will line up in the LMGT3 class.

The success of BMW M GmbH’s bestsellers in the premium midsize segment continues with the introduction of the newly revised BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive and the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive. Boasting more power, sharpened design features, new customisation options and digital innovations, the latest BMW M4 models remain true to their motorsport DNA.

The straight six-cylinder engine featuring M TwinPower Turbo Technology in the new BMW M4 Competition with M xDrive is still unparalleled in the competitive environment as it delivers a maximum power output of 530 hp, transferring power to the road via an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

The USA has become the largest sales market for the BMW M4 Coupé, followed by China, Germany and the UK.  Much like its Coupé counterpart, the BMW M4 Convertible enjoys great popularity in the USA, Germany and the UK. On a global scale, the BMW M4 Series is the clear market leader in each of their respective competitive segments.

The latest BMW M4 Coupé and the BMW M4 Convertible models continue to be produced at BMW Group Dingolfing plant, with production starting in March 2024. The UK market launch will follow at the same time, with the BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive priced from £84,250 and the BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive priced from £88,255.

Bespoke vehicles, M-typical performance. 
Uncompromising dynamics both in everyday driving and on the racetrack are characteristic of BMW M4 Series models, this also being reflected in their design. Powerful proportions and M-specific design features for optimising the cooling air supply and the aerodynamic balance underpin their status as high-performance sports cars. The large, vertical BMW kidney grille sporting M-typical and horizontally arranged double slats, powerfully modelled wheel arches and prominently flared side sills with a contrasting high-gloss black finish as well as attachments for the front and rear aprons provide clear reference to the dynamic potential of both the Coupé and the Convertible.

While a carbon reinforced plastic (CRP) roof is standard on the BMW M4 Coupé, the BMW M4 Convertible offers a particularly unique opportunity to enjoy M-typical performance along with an extraordinary open-air driving experience. The car’s sophisticated panel bow soft-top roof combines the benefits of a retractable hardtop with the look of a classic fabric roof. The electric drive mechanism allows it to be opened or closed while on the move.

Straight six-cylinder engine with motor racing technology and new performance specification. 
The straight six-cylinder power units used in the new BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive and the new M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive combine the typical high-revving characteristics offered by engines from BMW M GmbH with the current version of M TwinPower Turbo Technology. The 3-litre engine impresses with responsive power delivery and high-torque characteristics up into the highest load ranges. These attributes are responsible for those unmistakable, linear performance characteristics, which have always been the hallmark of BMW M automobiles.

The engine‘s design features directly derive from motor racing and include the extremely stiff crankcase, which is manufactured in a sleeveless closed-deck design, the weight-reduced forged crankshaft and the iron coating, which is applied to the cylinder liners in an arc wire spraying process (AWSP). Manufactured in a 3-D printing process, the cylinder head core features an optimised routing of the coolant ducts, something that cannot be realised using conventional metal casting technology. In this way, both weight and temperature management are optimised. Like the cooling system, the oil supply is also aligned to the special demands of racetrack use.

M TwinPower Turbo Technology comprises two mono scroll turbochargers, each of them supplying three cylinders with compressed air. Indirect intercooling facilitated by a low-temperature circuit and specific compressors optimise the power output of the charging unit. Moreover, the technology package includes the petrol injection system High Precision Injection operating at a maximum pressure of 350 bar, variable valve control VALVETRONIC and infinitely variable camshaft control Double VANOS.

Maximum power output of the straight six-cylinder power unit variant featured in both the new BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive and the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive has been increased from the previous 510 hp to 530 hp, this being reached at an engine speed of 6,250 rpm. The further developed engine retrieves maximum torque of 650 Nm within an extended engine speed range of between 2,750 and 5,730 rpm. This results in even more superior and continuous power delivery, thus further enhancing the performance experience above all in highly dynamic driving situations. This exclusive performance specification is realised through a modification of the engine control system, providing further proof of the outstanding potential of the straight six-cylinder engine developed by BMW M GmbH and which serves as the basis for the power plant featured in the BMW M4 GT3 long-distance vehicle.

The new BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive accelerates from 0-62 mph in 3.5 seconds, while the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive takes 3.7 seconds to reach the same speed from a standstill. The top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph, although this can be increased to 174 mph (BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive) or 180 mph (BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive) when the optional M Driver’s Package is selected.

Honed on the Nürburgring: M-typical overall package comprising engine, power transmission and suspension technology. 
The new BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive and the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive feature outstanding traction, an attribute that is clear from their impressive acceleration values. Thanks to a rear-wheel biased system and in conjunction with a fully variable Active M differential in the rear wheel transmission, the M xDrive system also enhances that typical M feeling during dynamic cornering. Via the set-up menu the driver is able to select, in addition to the default setting 4WD, the 4WD Sport mode, in which greater percentage of torque is directed to the rear axle. Moreover, when DSC is deactivated, the 2WD mode becomes available for exclusive transmission of power to the rear wheels.

High torsional stiffness of the body structure and the suspension connections create the ideal prerequisites for inspiring agility and spontaneous response to steering commands. Model-specific body struts also help the high-performance model provide that BMW M typical combination of dynamic, agile and precise handling.

M-specific kinematics and elasto-kinematics of the double-joint spring strut front axle and the five-link rear axle guarantee the harmony between extreme driving dynamics and balanced comfort features on all models of the series, both in everyday use and on longer journeys. Three characteristic maps are available via the M Setup menu for individual adjustments of the Adaptive M suspension, which comes as standard. Further components of the suspension technology include M Servotronic steering and the integrated braking system, which is utilised in conjunction both with the standard M compound brakes and the optional M carbon-ceramic brakes.

The integrated application of all drive and suspension systems, which was tested, inter alia, on the northern loop of the Nürburgring, guarantees, also in everyday traffic, highly dynamic and precisely controllable handling. A form of driving pleasure that is unique within the competitive environment is provided by the stability control system DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), which in addition to the M Dynamic Mode comprises ten-stage adjustable wheel slip limitation. With the standard-fit M Traction Control function, the driver is able to reduce system interventions in stages in order to cautiously approach the physical limits of driving when the car is used on the racetrack, for instance. The M Lap Timer and the M Drift Analyser provide functions that emphasise the character of these high-performance models as ultimate driving machines for use on closed-off roads.

Wheel sizes aligned to each axle, M forged light-alloy wheels boasting a new design. 
Axle-specific wheel sizes ensure a particularly comprehensive transfer of lateral forces during dynamic cornering. M forged light alloys are fitted as standard, with 19” wheels at the front and 20” at the rear fitted on both the BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive and the BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive.

New M forged light-alloy wheels feature a double-spoke design and, for the first time, with a silver finish. Their brightly shining surfaces provide for a sporty, sophisticated and elegant look.

Assistance systems with a configurable range of functions. 
The ongoing further development of the range of systems for automated driving and parking also contribute towards an unmistakable driving experience.  The driver assistance systems can be controlled via the M Mode button located on the centre console in order to guarantee the typically exhilarating experience of driving a high-performance sportscar. For instance, in the TRACK mode, which is designed for racetrack use, all comfort and safety systems are temporarily deactivated.  Park Distance Control with sensors at the front and rear and Cruise Control with braking function are both standard features on the new BMW M4 Coupé and the new BMW M4 Convertible.

The optional Driving Assistant package also includes Front Collision Warning with brake intervention and Lane Departure Warning including Lane Return function with steering assistance. Additional optional features offered with the Driving Assistant Professional package are, Steering and Lane Guidance Assistant with Automatic Speed Limit Assist, Lane Keeping Assistant, as well as Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function. The Parking Assistant facilitates automatic parking (entering/leaving spaces) and also includes the Reversing Assistant.

Modern design accents: New headlight design, taillights featuring laser technology.
The redesigned headlights give the front end of both the new BMW M4 Coupé and the new BMW M4 Convertible a modern look. The inside of the LED headlights is even more distinctively structured. They also feature further developments in their functionality as both the low and high beam are now produced by the same LED module. Two vertical LED units, each aligned in an arrowhead shape, assume the function of position and daytime running lights as well as direction indicators. The technology-oriented design of these new light sources provides for a sophisticated and progressive look.

Adaptive LED headlights with anti-glare matrix high beam are available as an optional feature. They are recognisable by the blue inserts and feature an urban light and cornering light function. Using the urban light function ensures optimised illumination of the roadside areas when travelling at low speeds on roads identified by the navigation data as built-up areas. The low beam function, however, is only activated when a speed of 22 mph has been reached. Furthermore, in conjunction with the adaptive LED headlights M Shadow Line lights featuring dark accents inside are also available.

The adaptive LED headlights, available as part of the Technology Pack, are combined with a both visually and technologically impressive design of the LED taillights, which are available for all new versions of all models of the BMW M4 Series and feature laser technology and a fascinating light design. Inside, laser diodes produce an even illumination of glass fibre bundles, the filigree, 3-dimensional light graphics of which complement the taillight clusters. The model-specific version of this innovative light scenario utilises a technology presented for the first time on the limited edition of the special high-performance model BMW M4 CSL, a model limited to 1,000 units worldwide.

A new design of the surrounding surface of the both the BMW logo and the M logo at the rear of the Competition models add further subtle accents for sophisticated elegance. The base of the BMW logo is now finished in High Gloss Black. The BMW M GmbH brand logo situated on the rear boot lid has been complemented by a silver surround.

A special feature designed exclusively for the model variants of the new BMW M4 Coupé for customisation of the external appearance are optional M design graphics for the bonnet and the rear boot lid. This contrasting colour emphasises the sporting characteristics of the two-door model and is available either in High Gloss Black or High Gloss Red. The optional steel roof available at no extra cost, which includes an electrically operated glass sliding roof, offers an additional design accent: The sheet metal part of the roof is finished in High Gloss Black instead of the body colour.

M-specific sportscar cockpit with new steering wheel designs and interior trims.
The modern motor racing environment inside the new versions of the high-performance models has also undergone further development. New steering wheel designs and control elements as well as high-class materials for the instrument panel and interior trims enhance the exclusive ambience inside the M-specific sportscar cockpits.

The standard M leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons, two M buttons and shift paddles now convey to the driver an even more intensive racetrack feel. The new design comprises a flattened lower section of the steering wheel rim and concisely modified spokes. A red centre marking in the 12 o’clock position underscores the sporty orientation of the steering wheel design. Moreover, for the first time, an M Alcantara steering wheel is available as an option with the same design and range of functions. In addition, a heating function is optionally available for both steering wheel variants.

The M-specific cockpit arrangement also includes a control panel on the centre console, on which the shift lever or gear selector switch, the red Start/Stop button, the BMW iDrive Controller, the Setup and M Mode buttons are situated. These can be activated for individual vehicle configuration as well as for the range of functions of cockpit displays and driver assistance systems, which can be adapted to suit the driving situation at hand.

The combination of sporty flair and premium ambience inside the vehicle highlights the characteristics of M. This is, amongst other things, the result of high-quality design and finishing of the materials used for the interior. The interior trims around the dashboard, the control panel and the cupholder cover now come as standard in Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite M Interior trim, as well as a Carbon Fibre finish available to order as an option. The optional Luxury Instrument Panel features Sensatec material with black-grey contrast stitching.

The electrically adjustable M sports seats come as standard and offer , with integrated headrests and illuminated model logos. The ideal position behind the wheel can be stored using the memory function. Heated seats for both driver and front passenger are also standard, with seat ventilation as an option. The standard leather trim Merino, the all-leather trim Merino, the extended BMW Individual leather trim Merino and the BMW Individual all-leather trim Merino are all available in four different colours.

The optional and also fully electrically adjustable and heated M Carbon bucket seats provide for an optimised connection between driver and vehicle. They combine motor racing functionality with lightweight design, cutting-edge workmanship and a high level of long-distance comfort. The use of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic for the structural elements of the seat and backrest, as well as cut-outs within the area of the side bolsters and beneath the headrests result in a weight reduction of 9.6 kilos compared with the standard sports seats.

In addition, an Air Collar system can be ordered as an exclusive option for the BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive. It generates a three-stage adjustable airflow, providing pleasant warmth from behind to both driver and front passenger, also during open-top driving and regardless of the outside temperature.

BMW Curved Display and new BMW Operating System 8.5.
More than ever before, the new BMW M4 Coupé and the new BMW M4 Convertible combine exclusive sportscar flair with advanced digitalisation. M-specific information on the high-resolution BMW Curved Display, which is inclined towards the driver, helps the driver to focus fully on the task at hand. The fully digital display combination comprises a 12.3-inch display behind the steering wheel and a control monitor with a 14.9-inch screen diagonal.

The BMW Curved Display serves as a platform for the current BMW iDrive system used in the new BMW M4 Coupé and the new BMW M4 Convertible. The display and operating system, which also includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and is therefore actively designed for touch and voice control, is now based on the BMW Operating System 8.5. The M-specific graphics and contents on the information screen and on the control monitor have been complemented by a new form of operation for the standard 3-zone automatic climate control. Temperature setting, ventilation intensity, heating of both seat and steering wheel can now, depending on how the vehicle is equipped, either be controlled per touch control via a special menu option in the lower part of the control display or by means of voice control.

There has been further refinement in the number of buttons and controls in the cockpit, and the latest models benefit from the introduction of a redesigned instrument panel. New control buttons for the fresh air vents in the centre of the dashboard and on the driver’s and front passenger’s side enable the setting of the desired direction of airflow by rotating and tilting. The standard feature Ambient Lighting now also includes contour lighting integrated into the cover of the central air vents. Like with the illumination of the footwells and the storage compartments by the centre console and door openers, colour and brightness can be adapted according to individual preferences. There is a choice of nine different colours.  The range of interior lighting also includes an atmospheric Welcome and Goodbye scenario as well as light signals that indicate an open door and incoming telephone calls.

The standard feature BMW Live Cockpit Professional also includes the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps. Another standard option is the BMW Head-up Display, which projects in an M-specific style driving-related information onto the windscreen, including multi-coloured rev range representation, shift lights and M View.

Furthermore, the standard feature BMW Live Cockpit Professional includes two USB ports for data transfer, a wireless network interface as well as Smartphone integration, which enables the use of Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. In addition, telephony with wireless charging of compatible Smartphones and a hi-fi loudspeaker system with 10 sound sources and a 250 W power amplifier are all included in the standard equipment range for the new BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive and the new M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive.

Targeted customisation with M Carbon exterior package, M Race Track package and BMW M Performance Parts.
A model-specific M Carbon exterior package is available for precise customisation of these high-performance automobiles, bringing to the fore the racing character of both models even more intensively. The M Carbon exterior package includes inserts for the wide-open front air intakes and a rear diffuser, each featuring its own geometry, exterior mirror caps and – exclusively for the BMW M4 Coupé – a CFP rear spoiler. Vehicle weight has been reduced by up to 25 kilos thanks to the likewise optionally available M Race Track package, which also includes, in addition to M Carbon ceramic brakes, M Carbon bucket seats for both driver and front passenger as well as interior trim strips in High Gloss Carbon Fibre.

BMW Performance Parts provide additional options for adapting the intensive driving experience and the dynamic aura of the new high-performance sportscars to suit the driver’s very own preferences. The spectrum of model-specific retrofit options encompasses exterior CFP components, M Performance forged wheels with centre lock, M Performance floor mats and M Performance steering wheel trims for individualisation of the interior.

All eyes will be on BMW M GmbH at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, as BMW’s legendary Motorsport division celebrates five decades of success. Festivalgoers will witness the world premiere of the first-ever BMW M3 Touring and the UK premiere of the new BMW M4 CSL, as both take to the hill throughout the world-famous four-day event. All this against the backdrop of a striking central feature sculpture on the lawn of Goodwood House, designed as a homage to 50 years of motorsport excellence as it showcases some of the most iconic models from BMW M. Elsewhere, visitors will be able to see – and in some cases, drive – the latest models from BMW’s exciting range, including the new BMW iX1, i7, i4 and iX M60.

For the first time in its history, the BMW M range will be complemented by a BMW M3 Touring which is a distillation of the technological prowess and know-how from the BMW M3 and M4 family, combined with the practicality of a five-door touring model. This latest BMW M model will be unveiled at BMW M at Trackside at 10:00 am (BST) on Thursday 23 June, alongside a high-performance M3 Touring with Performance Parts, and can then be seen on the Hillclimb in the ‘First Glance’ category every day of the Festival.

Alongside the M3 Touring and BMW M3 Touring MotoGP Safety Car on the hill will be the new BMW M4 CSL, celebrating its UK premiere. This ultimate, track-honed, two-seater coupe is defined by a 40hp power hike over the current BMW M4 Competition Coupé to 550hp, while meticulous weight-saving measures – including the use of carbon-fibre for the roof, bonnet and boot lid – achieve a 100kg reduction in overall weight (in standard specification in the German market). As a result, the new BMW M4 CSL has recorded the best-ever lap-time for a BMW road car at the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit.

With BMW M GmbH as the honoured marque, the Central Feature in front of Goodwood House will present an eye-catching display of BMW M cars past, present and future. BMW UK will add its legendary BMW 3.0 CSL to the Central Feature, while BMW Group Classic is providing three further examples: the BMW M1 Procar from the late 1970s; a WTCC BMW 3 Series E90; the Le Mans winning 1999 BMW V12 LMR. The display is completed by the BMW M LMDh racecar, that will debut next year.

Besides providing historic BMW M cars for the Central Feature, BMW Group Classic will bring four additional famous race cars to Goodwood’s Hillclimb. Pedro Piquet (BRA), son of three-time F1 World Champion Nelson Piquet, will drive the world’s first turbo-charged F1 World Champion car, the 1983 Brabham BMW BT52.

Steve Soper (UK) will climb the hill in the BMW V12 LMR on Thursday. He is followed by Markus Flasch (CEO of BMW M GmbH, 2018-2021), who will be in the driver’s seat on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

HRH Leopold Prince of Bavaria (GER) will drive the sharknose BMW 635CSi and Bruno Spengler (CAN) will drive his famous BMW Z4 GTR which features the Michel Vaillant Design from the 2015 Spa-Francorchamps 24h race.

For many, BMW M at Trackside will form the focal point for the long weekend’s celebrations. Crowned by an original BMW M1, the stand will host iconic models from BMW M’s illustrious past, from the legendary BMW M3 E30 to the revered BMW M3 CSL E46. They will take their place alongside a thrilling line-up of modern-day BMW M greats, from the ultimate 635hp BMW M5 CS and track-honed BMW M4 GT3 to the exclusive new BMW M850i Convertible and innovative electric BMW i4 M50. Visitors will be able to catch a glimpse of the future for BMW M, with the innovative BMW Concept XM, a vision of uncompromising high performance and extravagant luxury.

The Stable Yard – once again dedicated to BMW’s latest range of all-electric and electrified models – will offer the chance to see the stunning BMW i Vision Circular, a concept which illustrates the company’s determination to become the most sustainable manufacturer. Optimised for the circular economy and with the goal of achieving 100% recycled and recyclable material use, the BMW i Vision Circular offers a view of a compact yet luxurious fully-electric vehicle with a focus on sustainability for the year 2040.

BMW’s sustainability focus is equally apparent in the new BMW i7, on display in The Stable Yard following its recent unveiling. The latest version of the brand’s flagship saloon is set to redefine the luxury segment with new levels of electrification and digitalisation. Its state-of-the-art all-electric drivetrain is complemented by a blend of luxurious interior design and an astonishing entertainment experience, with the multi-sensory BMW iDrive and unique 31.3-inch 8K BMW Theatre Screen. These attributes are further displayed in the powerful new BMW M760e, a plug-in hybrid with 571hp that delivers scintillating performance yet achieves remarkable efficiency.

The recently revealed BMW iX1 will make its UK debut at Goodwood Festival of Speed, representing another first at the Stable Yard. The third-generation BMW X1 features a sharper design, across-the-board sustainability and cutting-edge digital innovations. Available for the first time with an all-electric drive system, the BMW iX1 xDrive30 is set to offer an electric driving range between 257 – 272 miles (WLTP, provisional figures).

These models will also be joined by the company’s technology flagship, the new BMW iX M60, a fully-electric Sports Activity Vehicle that combines emissions-free driving pleasure and sporting agility with lounge-style luxury and comfort. Powered by two BMW M eDrive electric motors to provide intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive capability, the BMW iX M60 can accelerate from 0-62 mph in a seamless 3.8 seconds, yet still achieve up to 348 miles (WLTP) of driving range on a single charge.

Members of the public will be able to experience the BMW iX M60’s searing performance for themselves during Friday’s ‘Electric Only’ Motor Circuit Test Drives, where they’ll also be able to take to the circuit behind the wheel of the new BMW i4, the brand’s first-ever fully-electric Gran Coupé, and the practical BMW iX3.

As its 50th birthday celebrations gather pace, BMW M GmbH is unveiling a new BMW M4 CSL, fusing old-school racing passion with innovative technology to create the ultimate performance experience. Its character is defined by a power hike of 40hp over the current BMW M4 Competition Coupé to 550hp and a host of meticulous weight-saving measures.

With years of experience in working with carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) for body, chassis and interior components, BMW M engineers have managed to restrict the special edition’s kerb weight to 1,625kg (in standard specification in the German market). As a result, the new BMW M4 CSL is 100kg lighter than the BMW M4 Competition Coupé (in standard specification in the German market), sprinting from 0 to 62mph in 3.7 seconds, and 124mph in just 10.7 seconds – 1.8 seconds quicker than the BMW M4 Competition Coupé. Top speed is an electronically limited 190mph.

The new BMW M4 CSL has track driving as its raison d’être, its two-seater configuration and chassis set-up sharing the genes of its competition-spec sibling, the BMW M4 GT3. In tests on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit, it posted a lap time of 7:15.677 on the 12.8-mile track, with an official notarised time for the 12.943-mile circuit (the complete lap) of 7:20.207 – the best figures ever for a series-produced BMW car. Lap times aside, the new BMW M4 CSL allows drivers to enjoy an intense racing-car feeling on the road as well as on the track.

Production will begin at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in July 2022 and is strictly limited to 1,000 units globally, with only 100 models allocated to the UK, priced from £128,820 OTR.

Fundamental and detailed: intelligent lightweight design in the BMW M4 CSL

Lightweight design has played a central role at BMW M GmbH from day one. In 1973 the BMW 3.0 CSL won the European Touring Car Championship at the first attempt. Today, the CSL designation stands for “Competition, Sport, Lightweight” and marks out high-performance models with particularly high output, rigorously reduced weight and a character honed purposefully for driving on the track.

Conventional components for the exterior, interior, powertrain and chassis were replaced with lightweight model-specific alternatives. M Carbon full bucket seats reduced weight by 24kg, while 21kg was saved by removing the rear seats and belts. Chassis changes such as the use of lightweight M Carbon ceramic brakes and special light-alloy wheels, springs and struts saved 21kg. Switching to ultra-lightweight sound insulation saved around 15kg. The use of CFRP in the body deducts 11kg, a titanium rear silencer cuts more than 4kg, and a further 4kg was saved from the BMW kidney grille, rear lights, floor mats and climate control.

Roof, bonnet and boot lid in carbon-fibre

The BMW M4 Competition Coupé already features a roof made from CFRP, cutting weight and lowering its centre of gravity, which in turn enhances agility. The body of the BMW M4 CSL also includes the use of carbon-fibre for the bonnet and boot lid.

The CFRP bonnet is approximately 1.2kg lighter than the BMW M4 Competition Coupé’s aluminium item. Its carbon-fibre structure is revealed by two unpainted, red-outlined indents extending in line with the BMW kidney grille to the edge of the bonnet. Red accent lines also emphasise the two fins on the CFRP roof and the contours of the extended side sills.

The Frozen Brooklyn Grey metallic exterior paint finish is exclusive to the BMW M4 CSL, with Alpine White and Sapphire Black also available. Classic “BMW Motorsport” emblems for the bonnet, boot lid and wheel centres are also available, recalling the 1973 originals.

Also in CFRP are the splitters fitted to the lower edge of the front apron to generate additional downforce and the inserts in the air curtains. The splitters have red accents and “CSL” lettering. The bespoke BMW kidney grille has a stripped-back design and features red contour lines and “M4 CSL” badging, with the central air inlet subdivided by just two horizontal grille bars, saving 0.5kg.

The CFRP boot lid of the BMW M4 CSL provides a 6.7kg weight saving over the BMW M4 Competition Coupé, its carbon-fibre structure visible inside through the unpainted clearcoat. The boot lid sports a pronounced spoiler, referencing a similar feature of the 2003 BMW M3 CSL. The diffuser integrated into the rear apron and the exterior mirror caps are also made from CFRP.

BMW Laserlight: yellow headlights and innovative rear lights fitted as standard

Both in the welcome effect triggered when unlocking the doors and when the low and high beam are switched on, the BMW Laserlight headlights illuminate in yellow rather than white, bringing to mind the look of successful GT racing cars.

The rear lights of the new BMW M4 CSL use an innovative technology making its debut in a series-produced car. All light functions use LED units, while the covers have intricate light threads woven into them, illuminated using laser technology. The threads run parallel to one another before crossing over at the outer edges to create a stunning interpretation of the hallmark BMW L-shaped rear light contour. Illuminated “BMW Laser” lettering on the light covers hints at the innovative technology below the surface.

The model badges on the rear, front side panels and BMW kidney grille also have a new design, with black surfaces and red outline.

Strut brace in the engine compartment, titanium rear silencer

In the engine compartment, an intricate cast aluminium strut brace takes the body rigidity of the new BMW M4 CSL to another level, with agility and steering precision optimised to maximum effect while minimising material use and weight.

The new BMW M4 CSL’s rear silencer is made from titanium, cutting weight of a conventional steel equivalent by 4.3kg. The twin tailpipes have matt black trim with a stripe-patterned perforation on its inner surface. The model-specific exhaust system comes with electronically controlled flaps, generating an intense racing aura both outside and inside the car. Gear changes are accompanied by precisely defined engine speed overshoot, while distinctive, low-frequency sound sequences can be heard on the overrun. The M Sound Control button on the centre console lets the driver switch to a more restrained soundtrack when needed.

Model-specific light-alloy wheels and M Carbon ceramic brakes as standard

The forged cross-spoke M light-alloy wheels have been designed exclusively for the new BMW M4 CSL, and are fitted with track-focused 275/35 ZR19 tyres at the front and 285/30 ZR20 at the rear. Alternative, more road-focused tyres are available as a no-cost option.

The new BMW M4 CSL is fitted as standard with M Carbon ceramic brakes that are around 14.3kg lighter than the brakes on the BMW M4 Competition Coupé. Their red-painted callipers team up with 400mm x 38mm discs at the front and 380mm x 28mm discs at the rear. Two pedal feel settings can be selected from the M Setup menu.

Two very special seats

The lightweight coupé only has seats for the driver and front passenger, but these are no ordinary seats. The M Carbon racing bucket seats were developed exclusively for the BMW M4 CSL with the focus firmly on track driving. Their carbon-fibre structure and deliberate lack of comfort features such as heating and lumbar adjustment allowed weight to be reduced by 24kg. Their pronounced contours offer an extremely high level of lateral support and an integrated side airbag, while cut-outs enable the use of a six-point harness. The seats have a fixed backrest angle, while the seat height can only be adjusted in a workshop using a three-stage screw linkage. The forward/back adjustments can be made manually using a lever on the front edge of the seat. The head restraints can be disassembled for track use to avoid interfering with a helmet.

Trimmed in black leather with red Alcantara inserts for the outer backrest surfaces and head restraints, contrast stitching in the colours of BMW M GmbH adorn both the seat bolsters and the seat belts.

M Carbon bucket seats with enhanced comfort are available as an alternative option, and are still 9.6kg lighter than the seats in the BMW M4 Competition Coupé. These optional seats combine racing functionality and lightweight design with a higher level of comfort, with electrically operated adjustment, seat heating and an Easy-Entry function allowing easy access to the rear, where a stowage area behind the seats provides space for two helmets. Removing the rear seat cuts weight by around 21kg.

Carbon-fibre centre console: reduced weight, unrestricted functionality

The centre console of the new BMW M4 CSL is made entirely from CFRP, the material’s distinctive structure clearly visible around the gear selector and iDrive Controller. The use of carbon-fibre more than halves the weight of the centre console, a saving of around 4kg.

The new special-edition model shares the BMW M4 Competition Coupé’s signature interior design, focused entirely on performance. M-specific displays, ergonomically optimised controls with red accents, the M-specific gear selector and the anthracite-coloured headliner create a racing aura even before the car has turned a wheel. Putting the finishing touches to the cockpit are the carbon-fibre interior trim strip and “CSL” badging below the head restraints, on the centre console and the rear panel. The M Alcantara steering wheel features a red 12 o’clock marker, carbon-fibre inlays on the three spokes and CFRP shift paddles.

Modified six-cylinder engine, eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and rear-wheel drive for the ultimate performance experience

Modifications for the new BMW M4 CSL contribute to a maximum output of 550hp when the rev counter hits 6,250rpm – an increase of 40hp over the BMW M4 Competition Coupé. Peak torque of 650Nm is on tap from just 2,750rpm and sustained all the way up to 5,950rpm. A bespoke engine mounting and rigorous application of lightweight design principles ensure the new BMW M4 CSL achieves an even bigger gain in dynamic prowess than this extra dose of M power would suggest.

Power was boosted by increasing charge pressure at the same time as making model-specific tweaks to the engine management. Yet this potent version of the 3.0-litre engine is also extremely efficient, with WLTP-calculated fuel consumption of 28.0 – 28.8mpg and CO₂ emissions of 227 – 222g/km.

A design principle focused on extracting maximum power

The straight-six engine has been adapted from racing car machinery and is focused squarely on high rev speeds and maximum power delivery. The crankcase’s sleeve-free, closed-deck construction helps to make it extremely rigid, paving the way for very high combustion pressures that optimise power output. The free-revving performance is aided by a twin-wire-arc-sprayed iron coating for the cylinder bores and the forged lightweight crankshaft, while its torsional resistance enables it to handle extremely high levels of torque.

The M-specific components also include the cylinder head with 3D-printed core. This additive manufacturing process enables geometric forms to be created that are beyond the capability of conventional metal casting techniques. As a result, the coolant duct routing could be optimised while also reducing weight.

Two mono-scroll turbochargers supply compressed air to cylinders 1 – 3 and 4 – 6 respectively while an indirect intercooler is supplied by a low-temperature circuit and specially-designed compressors. The system operates at a maximum charge pressure upped from 1.7 to 2.1 bar. Engine management has been modified accordingly to guarantee the constant power delivery up to the top end of the rev range.

Operating at a maximum pressure of 350 bar, the High Precision Injection system ensures efficient mixture preparation and clean combustion. VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing likewise form part of the M TwinPower Turbo technology. The straight-six engine is also fitted with a particulate filter to improve emissions.

The cooling system aboard the new BMW M4 CSL comprises a high-temperature and a low-temperature circuit. The indirect intercooler works using an electric coolant pump in the low-temperature system. The main module in the high-temperature circuit and two remote coolers in the wheel arches supply coolant to the engine block and turbochargers with the help of a mechanical water pump. An electric water pump and an electric fan can also cut in when required. The large openings in the front apron additionally channel the oncoming air to an engine oil cooler and transmission oil cooler.

The oil sump has two separate chambers and an integrated suction channel. An extra suction stage allows the map-controlled oil pump to draw lubricant from the smaller chamber, which steps in when extra capacity is needed. This ensures a consistent supply of oil at all times, even under extreme lateral and longitudinal acceleration on the track.

A firmer engine mounting produces an exhilarating, highly precise sensation that is reminiscent of a racing car. The transmission mounting has also been modified.

Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic

The M-specific version of the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic features ratio spacing attuned to the engine’s characteristics and an extremely sharp shift action. Each gear change is clearly communicated to the driver, even when the transmission is operating in automated mode. Manual shifts with sequential gear selection can be performed using either the selector lever or the carbon-fibre shift paddles. Multiple downshifts to the lowest available gear can be executed in manual mode by pulling the left shift paddle while pressing the accelerator to the floor. M Steptronic does not force upshifts under acceleration in manual mode, even when the engine’s revs hit the limiter. In automated mode, automatic engine blipping reduces engine braking when downshifting. The driver can use the Drivelogic button integrated into the selector lever to alter the shift characteristics with a choice of three clearly distinguishable modes, including a special track-optimised setting.

Chassis precision at its finest

Providing the basis for the new BMW M4 CSL’s chassis is the pairing of a double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle. Standard equipment includes adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, electromechanical M Servotronic steering with variable ratio and an M-specific version of the integrated braking system.

Eight-millimetre drop in ride height, auxiliary springs and bespoke dampers

The model-specific suspension features an 8mm reduction in ride height compared with the BMW M4 Competition Coupé, lowering the centre of gravity. Auxiliary springs are also fitted at both the front and rear axle and improve road contact in dynamic situations. The anti-roll bars at both axles and their mountings have likewise been specially engineered.

The front axle’s forged swivel bearing has more camber, increasing the ability to put down power through high-speed corners. On the rear axle, four additional ball joints with zero play take the place of the rubber mounts for the control arms on both the axle subframe and wheel carrier sides, lowering the secondary spring rates and optimising wheel location, camber stiffness, and damper response. The rear-axle subframe has a rigid bolted connection to the body without any flexible rubber elements, improving directional stability.

Damping forces for each wheel are adjusted in a few milliseconds using electromagnetic valves to suit the changing conditions. There are three modes in the M Setup menu: SPORT was fine-tuned during exhaustive testing at the Nordschleife. SPORT PLUS is designed for perfectly surfaced race tracks, while COMFORT is ideal for everyday driving.

M Traction Control honed for the track

The inclusion of the integrated braking system enables the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system to intervene more swiftly and precisely than ever. Traction control duties have also been relocated from the DSC control unit to the engine management, allowing the engine’s power to be adjusted with exceptional sensitivity when accelerating on slippery surfaces.

The new BMW M4 CSL lets the driver set individual intervention thresholds for wheel slip in ten different stages, with the option of deactivating DSC by engaging M Dynamic Mode. M Traction Control stages 1 to 5 are the same as in the BMW M4 Competition Coupé, while stages 6 to 10 have been devised for track conditions and are geared towards optimising traction to deliver quick lap times.

Two-seater with exclusive sports car cockpit

The M Carbon full bucket seats, M Alcantara steering wheel and M-specific control panel on a centre console hewn from CFRP create the perfect setting for driving pleasure. Standard equipment includes Merino leather with extended features and M seat belts with contrast stitching in the colours of BMW M GmbH.

The CSL model badge is displayed in the information display of the standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional, comprising a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 10.25-inch control display. The interaction between the driver and vehicle can take place via touch control on the control display, the iDrive Controller, the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel or voice control. BMW Live Cockpit Professional also includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps, telephony with wireless charging, smartphone integration enabling the use of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, two USB ports for data transfer, a Wi-Fi interface, and numerous advanced digital services. Standard equipment also includes a 10-speaker HiFi system with a 205-watt amplifier.

The BMW Head-Up Display is available as an option for the new BMW M4 CSL as part of the Ultimate Road Pack, supporting the driver to focus on the task at hand by projecting relevant information onto the windscreen. It includes M-specific elements such as a colour rev counter, Shift Lights and M View. In addition, the Ultimate Road Pack for the M4 CSL also includes Comfort Access, Driving Assistant, Parking Assistant, Folding Wing Mirrors with automatic dimming and Wireless mobile phone charging.

Comfort-enhancing features and assistance systems focused on the essentials

The lightweight design of the new BMW M4 CSL means the on board systems are focused on the essentials for track driving. Driving Assistant, which includes Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info and Front Collision Warning with brake intervention can be selected via the optional Ultimate Road Pack.

Individually configurable vehicle settings

The Setup button on the centre console provides direct access to the configuration options for the engine, shock absorbers, steering and braking system. Two individually composed variants of the M Setup can be stored with the driver’s settings for the engine sound, M Traction Control, Automatic Start/Stop function and the gearshift characteristics. The configuration can then be recalled by pressing one of the two red M buttons on the steering wheel.

M Drive Professional and M Mode button

The standard M Drive Professional helps the driver to make improvements in their pursuit of the ideal line and faster lap times. For example, dramatic use of oversteer and opposite lock is recorded by the M Drift Analyser, while a steering-on-the-throttle performance rating comprises a mark between one and five stars with a comparison against the driver’s previous best. An overall view also displays the number of drifts recorded, the distance covered while sideways and other facts and figures.

The M Laptimer, meanwhile, sends a variety of information to both the instrument cluster and the BMW Head-Up Display. This allows the driver to keep an eye on how much quicker they are than their current fastest lap. The display shows the number of laps completed so far, distance covered and the duration of the current stint. Drivers can also analyse the data in detail with the BMW M Laptimer iPhone app and share it with the online community.

The M Mode button can be used to adjust the responses of the various systems, with the usual ROAD and SPORT modes joined by a TRACK mode. In SPORT mode, the instrument cluster and Head-Up Display switch to M View, which only presents information relevant to sporty driving such as an M-specific rev dial and Shift Lights, digital speed read-out and gear indication. Data including coolant temperature, charge pressure, tyre condition and lateral and longitudinal acceleration can be displayed in the side areas of the instrument cluster.

TRACK mode is activated by an extended press of the M Mode button and confirmed using the iDrive Controller. This setting deactivates all comfort and safety functions of the driver assistance systems, the control display is switched off to focus the driver’s attention, and the instrument cluster and Head-Up Display switch to M View, with road sign detection also hidden.

BMW will celebrate the return of the Festival of Speed in 2021 with its first ever world premiere at Goodwood. The all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé will make its global debut on 8 July 2021 on the famous 1.16-mile course. Taking to the hill too will be the fastest and most powerful BMW M production car ever, the new BMW M5 CS, whilst the Festival will also provide the stage for two exciting UK premieres for the brand: the new fully electric BMW iX and BMW i4.

The all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé will continue the long tradition of BMW’s driver-oriented, compact and powerful two-door models and represents the most modern interpretation of the legendary BMW 2002. The combination of its compact dimensions, outstanding driving dynamics, optional 6-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive, as well as extrovert design will make the BMW 2 Series Coupé unique in the market. Festival goers will be able to see the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé unveiled at ‘BMW M Town’ at 09:00 and seen on the hill for the first time in the ‘First Glance’ category from 09:40.

Alongside the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé will be the BMW M5 CS, the ultimate incarnation of the BMW M5, and the most powerful production car in the history of the company. Taking BMW M performance to an unprecedented level, the 635hp 4.4-litre V8 engine powers the M5 CS from 0-62 mph in just 3.0 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 189mph.

Visitors to the Stable Yard, once again dedicated to BMW and themed as an ‘Electric Boulevard’, will see the new BMW iX in the UK for the first time. Representing the pinnacle of BMW Group’s electrification strategy, the company’s flagship electric model will launch in November 2021 and ushers in an exciting new chapter for the brand. Conceived from the outset for purely electric mobility and sustainable manufacturing techniques, the BMW iX combines locally emission-free driving pleasure and sporting agility with a highly usable operating range and luxurious spaciousness. It is also the first model to feature the new generation BMW iDrive, powered by Operating System 8.

The ‘Electric Boulevard’ will also showcase the first-ever BMW i4. This striking gran coupé introduces all-electric mobility to the heart of the BMW brand and offers a range of up to 367 miles (WLTP). The BMW i4 is a statement vehicle, which combines style, agility and comfort with zero tailpipe emissions. Due for launch in the UK in November 2021, the i4 is the first all-electric premium car from the BMW Group aimed at the traditional core of the midsize segment.

The home of the marque during the festival will be ‘BMW M Town’ – offering an unparalleled array of BMW product and experiences. Alongside the all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé, the star of the stand will be the BMW M4 Competition x KITH. Limited to just 150 units worldwide and featuring unique exterior and interior design detail, this very special edition model was created in collaboration with New York lifestyle brand KITH.

Visitors to the stand, which once again is positioned trackside, will be able to see the BMW M 1000 RR, the first M model from BMW Motorrad with its genes coming directly from professional racing. Stunning iterations of new BMW R 18, including the Spirit of Passion by Kingston Custom and custom bikes from Bernhard Naumann and the Custom Works ZON team from Japan, will also be on display.

Visitors will be able to have some fun too -racing virtually, under hyper-realistic conditions, with a sim racing simulator.

BMW M GmbH has revealed its most exclusive M car in the premium midsize segment with the debut of the BMW M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive.

Blending convertible style with a 510hp six‑cylinder in‑line engine and the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the new arrival complements track-focused M performance with an exhilarating open-air driving experience.

With the M xDrive system delivering optimum traction, the BMW M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive can sprint from 0-62mph in only 3.7 seconds. The M xDrive system also enhances handling, but a rear-biased setup means the classic M-style driving experience is always available. 

Signature M design features and a new panel bow softtop roof create a standout appearance that is accentuated when the roof is open. The BMW M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive provides room for four people to experience the exciting drive, with front seat occupants benefitting from the standard-fit Air Collar system. This directs warm air to the back of the neck and head, ensuring the interior is always comfortable, even when the roof’s down.

The new BMW M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive follows the recent UK launch of the BMW M3 Competition Saloon and BMW M4 Competition Coupé. M xDrive versions of both models will start production in the summer, completing the M high performance sports car offering in the premium midsize segment.

Production of the BMW M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive will begin in July 2021.

Elegant profile enhanced with innovative new panel bow softtop roof
The new BMW M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive instantly shows an uncompromising commitment to sheer driving pleasure and racing-inspired characteristics. Its new panel bow softtop roof complements crisp body lines to generate a distinctive, powerful profile. The roof delivers the best of both worlds, fusing the practical benefits of a retractable hardtop with the classic style of a fabric hood. It is also around 40 per cent lighter than its predecessor’s retractable hardtop.

The softtop’s electric drive mechanism allows it to be opened or closed, while on the move, at speeds up to 31 mph. The process takes just 18 seconds. When driving with the top down, the boot can hold 300 litres of luggage, an increase of 80 litres over its predecessor. When it’s closed, the variable softtop compartment increases load capacity to 385 litres.

With the roof either open or closed, the vehicle’s profile accentuates the M-specific design features. The front-end lines of the car converge on the vertical BMW kidney grille and, together with the large apertures to either side, the kidney grille ensures sufficient cooling air is always channelled through to the powertrain and braking. The slim headlights use LED units as standard to generate both low and high beam. Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Laserlight can be ordered as an option.

Other unmistakeable design elements of the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive include flared wheel arches, M Side Gills integrated into the front side panels and prominently extended side sills that combine with the attachment parts for the front and rear aprons to form a black band around the whole of the car. The black rear diffusor frames the exhaust system’s two pairs of tailpipes. An M Carbon exterior package is available as an option, while the retrofit options from the BMW M Performance Parts range provide further scope for individualisation.

Six-cylinder in-line engine with a high-revving character
The 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine in the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive combines the hallmark high-revving character of engines developed by BMW M GmbH with the latest version of M TwinPower Turbo technology. The engine delivers throughout the rev range, generating peak torque of 650Nm between 2,750 and 5,500rpm, while maximum output is reached at 5,510rpm and then maintained up to the 7,200rpm redline.

The engine channels its power via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and, combined with the enhanced traction offered by M xDrive, contributes to stunning acceleration times. The new BMW M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive takes just 3.7 seconds to power from 0 to 62mph and only 13.1 seconds to reach 124mph from standstill. Midrange acceleration from 50-75mph takes only 2.8 seconds (in 4th gear) or 3.7 seconds (in 5th gear). Specifying the optional M Driver’s Package increases the electronically limited top speed from 155mph to 174mph.

Like the cooling system, the oil supply system has been designed to handle track driving. The M-specific exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps delivers a distinctive engine note that enhances the overall performance experience, particularly when the car’s roof is open.

M xDrive: precise power distribution, supreme performance
The M xDrive all-wheel-drive system deployed in the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case to ensure fully variable and super-smooth distribution of the engine’s power between the front and rear wheels. Its rear-wheel bias adds to the signature M feeling while significantly enhancing both traction and agility. The multi-plate clutch’s oil supply has been optimised to enable sustained all-wheel-drive performance even in hard track driving. The M xDrive teams up with the Active M Differential at the rear axle to deliver optimum handling capabilities.

The Setup menu allows the driver to change the default 4WD setting to 4WD Sport mode, which directs a greater proportion of the engine’s drive to the rear wheels. Drivers can also switch off the DSC system altogether and engage 2WD mode. In this setting, drive power is relayed solely to the rear wheels and there is no intervention from the chassis control systems to stabilise the vehicle. This allows skilled drivers to enjoy a highly engaging driving experience.

Model-specific body stiffening and chassis technology
The handling qualities of the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive are characterised by its supreme steering precision. The high torsional stiffness of the body structure and chassis mountings creates the perfect basis for precisely controllable handling. Key features include bracing elements focused on enhancing driving dynamics and an aluminium shear panel in the front-end structure, underfloor bracing elements and a rear axle subframe with a rigid connection to the body. The convertible also benefits from unique torsion struts at the rear of the body.

A bespoke version of the double-joint spring strut front axle also factors in the specific demands connected with all-wheel drive, featuring specially adapted axle geometry and an individually tuned steering ratio. The five-link rear axle on the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive boasts meticulously refined kinematics and elastokinematics.

The convertible puts its power down via forged M light-alloy wheels measuring 19 inches in diameter at the front and 20 inches at the rear.

The M Servotronic steering enables accurate turn-in when powering through bends on the one hand and effortless parking and manoeuvring on the other. It does so by combining the benefits of speed‑sensitive power assistance and a variable steering ratio. The new BMW M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive also features adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers.

The range of functions of the DSC stability control system includes M Dynamic Mode that allows extra wheel slip at the push of a button to induce an exceptionally sporty driving experience. Drivers also benefit from the new M Traction Control function as standard, which allows them to set individual intervention thresholds for wheel slip limitation through ten stages.

M Carbon bucket seats and M-specific control/operation system
The interior of the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive blends a contemporary feel with performance-focused M highlights, such as the M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles, M-specific gearshift lever and red colour accents. Electrically adjustable and heated M Sport seats and Extended Merino leather trim come as standard, as does the innovative Air Collar system that enhances comfort for occupants when the roof is down by directing warm air around their necks.
A highlight of the options list are the new heated M Carbon bucket seats. Their structure-based design fuses racing functionality with a lightweight construction and excellent comfort over long distances.

The M-specific control/operation system of the BMW M4 Competition Convertible M xDrive includes the Setup button on the centre console. This provides direct access to the settings options for the engine, chassis, steering, braking system and M xDrive. Two overall vehicle setups can be stored and called up by pressing one of the M buttons on the steering wheel. The control panel on the centre console also houses the M Mode button as standard. This can be used to adjust the responses and characteristics of the driver assistance systems and the displays in the instrument cluster and Head-Up Display to deliver a driving experience suited to the situation at hand.

Extensive standard equipment and enhanced driving assistance systems
Standard equipment including three-zone automatic climate control, LED interior lighting with ambient lighting and Harman Kardon HiFi system enhance comfort in everyday driving and over longer journeys. The BMW Live Cockpit Professional with a fully digital display grouping, the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant also come as standard in the new BMW M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive.

The technological progress made since the predecessor model is also reflected in the significantly expanded availability of driving assistance systems. New additions include the Steering and Lane Control Assistant complete with Active Navigation function – which are part of the optional Driving Assistant Professional – and the standard-fit Reversing Assistant.

Customers can choose from a variety of optional Packages – Comfort, M Carbon, Visibility, Technology Plus, M Pro and Ultimate. Each has been compiled to further elevate the M experience and tailor it to the customer’s preference, the individual components perfectly complementing each other.

Only weeks after launching the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and BMW M4 Competition Coupé in the UK, BMW M GmbH is set to add another two variants to the model line-up by offering the M xDrive all-wheel drive system for the high-performance sports cars in the premium midsize segment for the first time.

With more driven wheels, the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon M xDrive and BMW M4 Competition Coupé M xDrive take the exclusive M feeling to an even higher level. The improvements in traction, handling stability and agility enable both models to reach 62mph from standstill in only 3.5 seconds, making them 0.4 seconds quicker on the sprint than their rear-wheel drive counterparts.

The power from the 510hp straight-six engine fitted in the new models is directed via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. The M-specific all-wheel drive system then divides it between the front and rear wheels as required to enhance agility, directional stability, traction and track-focused dynamics. The all-wheel drive system has a rear-biased setup in classic M style. This system allows the driver to experience even more of the hallmark M performance characteristics reflected, among other things, in even quicker acceleration.

By introducing the M xDrive versions to the range, BMW M GmbH now offers an unrivalled variety of high-performance midsize models. All four versions of the latest model generation provide their own individual recipe for an exhilarating high-performance sports car that offers unrestricted everyday usability.

The production of the BMW M3 Competition Saloon M xDrive and BMW M4 Competition Coupé M xDrive will get underway in July 2021.

Customers will enjoy even more choice later in the year when these new models will be joined by the latest version of the BMW M4 Convertible.

M xDrive and Active M Differential for superior handling dynamics

The M xDrive system’s specially tuned power transmission control already provides an entertaining alternative to rear-wheel drive for a host of high-performance models from BMW M GmbH. Teaming up with the all-wheel drive system is the Active M Differential that also ensures fully variable distribution of drive torque between the rear wheels as the situation demands. This helps to transfer the torque to the road without any loss of power, especially when the car is being pushed hard or has less grip on one side. The M xDrive system and the Active M Differential – complete with its integrated M-specific traction control – link up with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system to ensure precisely judged interaction for the driving situation at hand. The clear aim is to produce a supremely dynamic driving experience that blends the customary M feeling with noticeably enhanced traction and directional stability.

The M xDrive system uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case for smoothly adjustable, fully variable distribution of drive torque between the front and rear wheels. The multi-plate clutch’s oil supply has been optimised to keep the variable power splitting mechanism performing effectively even under hard driving on the track. The task of transmitting power to the front and rear differentials is handled by driveshafts engineered specifically for the BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and BMW M4 Competition Coupé with M xDrive.

The output shafts that relay the drive torque to the wheels are likewise bespoke items. The all-wheel drive system has a rear-biased set-up in classic M style. Normally, the drive power is channelled entirely to the rear wheels, with the front wheels only being brought into play when the rears cannot feed any more power to the road.

The transfer case features a bespoke control unit and integrated wheel slip limitation. This enables it to compensate for any differences in rotational speed between the front and rear wheels exceptionally quickly without having to involve the central DSC management. This results in enhanced all-wheel drive performance and supreme handling for which M models are renowned in dynamic driving situations, such as powering through corners in a controlled drift.

Both models put their power down via standard M light-alloy wheels measuring 19 inches in diameter at the front and 20 inches at the rear. The forged wheels in twin-spoke design with a Bicolour Jet Black finish are fitted with 275/35 R19 tyres at the front and 285/30 R20s at the rear. Specially designed track tyres with the same dimensions are also available as an option.

Major technical modifications optimise performance characteristics

The all-wheel-drive technology in the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon M xDrive and BMW M4 Competition Coupé M xDrive is complemented by a double-joint spring strut front axle redesigned for these models and it features specially adapted front axle geometry and an individually tuned steering ratio. These extensive bespoke modifications for the all-wheel drive system ensure that both the existing pure rear-wheel drive variants and their new M xDrive counterparts stand out with their engineered-without-compromise, signature M steering characteristics. The all-wheel drive models additionally benefit from a specially adapted version of the engine oil supply system designed to handle extremely dynamic performance.

Three M xDrive modes enable an individualised M feeling

M xDrive also allows the driver to tailor the all-wheel-drive system’s characteristics and performance to the driving situation and their individual preferences. The desired setting can be selected directly from the Setup menu of the M-specific operating system, where there is a choice of three different power transmission modes. In the default 4WD setting, the all-wheel drive system offers maximum traction and precision handling while always maintaining a distinctly rear-biased power split. Activating 4WD Sport mode directs an even greater proportion of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels. The linear build-up of lateral forces so characteristic of M models now also makes it possible to execute controlled drifts. Drivers can also switch off the DSC system altogether and engage 2WD mode, where drive power is relayed solely to the rear wheels.

With the standard-fit M Traction Control on UK models, traction can be finely adjusted through ten stages in this setting in the same way as on the rear-wheel drive models. This form of power transmission without any intervention from the chassis control systems to stabilise the vehicle allows seasoned drivers to enjoy a pure driving experience and hone their skills with the help of the M Drift Analyser.

Drivers can set and store their preferred M xDrive mode as part of the two individual M1 and M2 configurations, together with the settings for engine characteristics, damper response, steering characteristics, braking system and other parameters. Either configuration can then be called up instantly at any time by pressing one of the two M buttons on the steering wheel.

Thirty five years after the debut of the first BMW M3, BMW is presenting the latest generation of its high-performance models that fuse track-focused performance with everyday usability.

The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé occupy very different territory - one a saloon with space for five occupants, the other a four-seater coupé - but they both achieve their common goal of delivering pure driving pleasure.

Class-leading levels of standard equipment plus options that take individualisation to new heights, especially for racetrack outings, ensure both models will continue the success of their formidable predecessors.

Optional equipment is offered in six main packages – Comfort, Technology Plus, Visibility, M Carbon, M Pro and Ultimate. Beyond these packages, there will be a select number of optional items including M Brakes in red, blue or black, M Carbon exterior, M Carbon seats and Park Assistant Plus with Drive Recorder.

Under the bonnet of the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé lies a 510hp high-revving straight-six engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, which teams up with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission as it sends its power to the rear wheels.

Both models will also be available (from summer 2021) with M xDrive, which offers even greater directional stability and supreme traction without compromising on agility.

The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon is built at BMW Plant Munich, while the new BMW M4 Competition Coupé is produced at BMW Plant Dingolfing. The market launch for both models is Saturday 13 March, 2021.

Straight-six engine delivers high performance in signature M high-revving style
The engine powering the new high-performance models sets a new high point in terms of output and torque for six-cylinder in-line petrol units from BMW. The power unit offers 60hp more than the maximum output of its predecessor models and increases its peak torque by 100Nm.

The new 3.0-litre straight-six engine combines the hallmark high-revving character of BMW M engines with the latest version of M TwinPower Turbo technology. The engine maintains peak torque up to the moment where maximum output is reached: 650Nm is on tap between 2,700 and 5,500rpm, from when maximum output of 510hp is sustained up to the 7,200rpm red line.

The M3 Competition Saloon and M4 Competition Coupé accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 3.9 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155mph, rising to 180mph if the optional M Pro Package is specified.

Bespoke M TwinPower Turbo technology
A bespoke version of M TwinPower Turbo technology includes two mono-scroll turbochargers that supply compressed air to cylinders 1–3 and 4–6 respectively. An indirect intercooler optimises the power output of the charger and its electronically controlled wastegate supports the turbochargers’ instantaneous responsiveness and heightens the effectiveness of the catalytic converters.

Other elements of M TwinPower Turbo technology include VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. Both models meet the Euro 6d exhaust emissions standard.

Cooling system and oil supply designed for track use
The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé use a bespoke cooling system to ensure an optimal operating temperature in all conditions. It includes a low-temperature system that contributes to cooling the intercooler and a high-temperature system that cools the engine block and the two turbochargers.

Meanwhile, the oil supply system has also been designed to meet the challenges of dynamic track driving. The engine’s weight-minimised oil sump has two separate chambers and an integrated suction channel, while the additional suction stage allows the map-controlled oil pump to draw lubricant from the smaller chamber when extra capacity is needed.

Exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps delivers a distinctive soundtrack
A dual-branch exhaust system reduces back pressure, but also produces a fantastic soundtrack. It leads into a high-capacity rear silencer with a quartet of tailpipes finished in Black Chrome.

Electrically controlled, fully adjustable flaps suppress intrusive frequency ranges, increasing comfort levels while the sound is also influenced by the engine mode selected - the driver can choose either SPORT or SPORT+ mode using the relevant button on the centre console. It is also possible to alter the engine’s aural impact using the M Sound Control button on the centre console.

Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic as standard
Both models use a specially tuned eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. The M Steptronic transmission enables both fully automatic gear changes and manual shifts with sequential gear selection. Fitted as standard along with the newly designed selector lever are carbon gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. With a simple tap of a paddle the driver can switch from automatic to manual mode.

The transmission’s shift characteristics are adjusted using the Drivelogic button integrated into the selector lever. The driver can access three clearly distinct setups – comfort oriented, sports focused or track optimised.

M xDrive all-wheel-drive system optimises traction and performance
For the first time in the history of the BMW M3 and BMW M4, customers will be able to specify an all-wheel-drive system – expected from summer 2021 – as an alternative to traditional rear-wheel drive.

The engine’s power is distributed between the front and rear wheels via the transfer case’s electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, before the Active M Differential splits it again between the two rear wheels.

The specially developed system significantly enhances acceleration from standstill and the driver can configure the distribution of power as required via the Setup menu. In the default 4WD setting, signature M rear-biased power transmission goes hand-in-hand with unshakable traction and precisely controllable handling. 4WD Sport mode directs a greater proportion of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels to optimise track performance. Switching off DSC brings 2WD mode into the equation, with no intervention from the control systems.

Chassis delivers hallmark M precision and scope for individualisation
Both new models also include advances in body rigidity and aerodynamic efficiency, plus optimised, tuned chassis technology. A long wheelbase and wide tracks, a low centre of gravity and virtually 50:50 weight distribution, plus stiffer, stronger and M-specific body and chassis mountings contribute to excellent driving dynamics.

Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers
The electronically controlled shock absorbers in the standard adaptive M suspension optimise road contact and traction in every situation with the use of electromagnetically controlled valves that act in just a few milliseconds to generate the required damping force. It is infinitely variable, and for each individual wheel.

Basic damper characteristics can be adjusted via the M Setup menu. The driver can select from three modes – COMFORT, SPORT and the track-focused SPORT PLUS.

Integrated braking system with two pedal feel settings
In standard form, the newly developed M Compound brakes comprise six-piston fixed-calliper brakes with 380mm discs at the front and single-piston floating-calliper brakes (including parking brake) with 370mm discs at the rear. The callipers are available for the first time in either black or red in addition to the blue callipers known from the predecessor models; all bear the M logo.

The optional M Carbon ceramic brakes, available as part of the M Pro Package, offer even stronger braking power and durability. Their callipers – painted in Gold metallic – engage with 400mm discs at the front and 380mm items at the rear.

A shared feature of both brake variants is the integrated braking system, where the brake actuation, braking force assistance and braking control functions are brought together within a compact module. The integrated braking system allows vehicle deceleration to be geared precisely to the driver’s requirements.

The M-specific version of the integrated braking system additionally presents the driver with two pedal feel settings – COMFORT and SPORT, which can be selected via the M Setup menu.

DSC with M Dynamic Mode and ten-stage traction control
The DSC functions in the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé work even more effectively with the integrated braking system.

Along with the M-specific Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Cornering Brake Control (CBC), the integrated braking system also benefits the stability control function, as well as the Automatic Differential Brake (ADB-X), Brake Assist, Dry Braking and Start-Off Assistant functions. Competition models add the Automatic Hold function.

The new integrated wheel-slip limitation function provides more sensitive acceleration control on wet, snow-covered or icy surfaces or on uneven roads.

The driver can also activate M Dynamic Mode using a button on the centre console. This mode allows a greater degree of wheel slip, enabling controlled drifts to be achieved. Also selectable at the push of a button is DSC Off mode.

With M Drive Professional, drivers also benefit from the new M Traction Control function. Making its debut in the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé, this new form of traction control allows the driver to set the intervention thresholds for wheel-slip limitation.

With different stages of precisely defined slip at the driven wheels, the driver can find the perfect balance of racing-car performance and directional stability.

M Drive Professional: unbeatable performance on the race track
The latest generation of the M-specific control/operation system contains a host of new features. Making its debut is M Drive Professional, which has been developed specifically for track driving. Included as standard, this allows the driver to make consistent progress in their pursuit of the ideal line and the perfect lap. For example, the driver’s ability to pilot the car through corners with plenty of oversteer and opposite lock is recorded by the M Drift Analyser, activated via the iDrive menu.

Other functions of M Drive Professional include the M Laptimer, also accessed via the iDrive menu, which delivers a far-reaching race performance analysis. The driver can also analyse the data recorded during their track outing in detail using the BMW M Laptimer app on their Apple iPhone – and share selected information with the online community if they wish.

Enhanced individualisation of the powertrain and chassis via the Setup button
As in the predecessor models, drivers of the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé can activate various settings for the engine, chassis and steering independently of one another. In addition, the braking system and traction control can now also be configured as required.

The new Setup button on the centre console provides direct access to the settings options for the seven powertrain and chassis parameters. Depending on the model variant and the car’s specification, the Gear Shift Assistant, M xDrive and traction can also be controlled via the button in just a single step.

Two individually configured M Setup variants can be stored permanently, together with the preferred settings for the engine noise, the driving stability control system, the Auto Start-Stop function and the shift characteristics of the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.

Pure driving pleasure at your fingertips: the M Mode button
The control panel on the centre console of the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé also houses the M Mode button.

This can be used to adjust the responses and characteristics of the driver assistance systems and the displays in the instrument cluster and Head-Up Display. The driver can choose from ROAD, SPORT and TRACK settings.

In the basic ROAD setting, all the standard and optional driver assistance systems are fully activated. In the SPORT setting, the driver assistance systems activated through the driver’s chosen configuration limit themselves to warnings of speed limits and overtaking restrictions, for example.

Utilising M Drive Professional, drivers can also select TRACK mode, which is developed exclusively for driving on race circuits and includes the deactivation of all the comfort and safety functions of the driver assistance systems.

Driver assistance systems: comfort and safety as desired
Both models come as standard with Parking Assistant, Cruise control with braking function and Front Collision Warning with brake intervention, the Lane Departure Warning system including lane return with steering assistance, the Attentiveness Assistant and the Speed Limit Info system.

Also standard is Driving Assistant, which brings the Lane Change Warning, rear crossing traffic warning and Rear Collision Prevention into play. Customers can also add the Driving Assistant Professional as part of the optional Technology Plus Pack, which includes the Steering and Lane Control Assistant with new Active Navigation function. The new Emergency Lane Assistant, meanwhile, guides the car automatically to the most appropriate side of its lane in tailbacks on the motorway.

The Parking Assistant comprises functions such as the Reversing Assistant, while Parking Assistant Plus, available individually or as part of the optional Technology Plus Package, adds Surround View and Remote 3D View.

Also included in this package is the BMW Drive Recorder which uses the driver assistance systems’ cameras to record video sequences outside the car of up to 40 seconds in length.

Standout styling from the M-specific kidney grille to the standard carbon roof
The distinctive, aerodynamically optimised exteriors of both new models perfectly convey their motorsport-inspired character. The BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé add 122mm to the length of their predecessors and are 26mm and 17mm wider respectively.

Both models have a deep, frameless and all-black BMW kidney grille. The hallmark M double bars – now horizontally arranged – bear a model badge; either side of the grille are additional cooling intakes with honeycomb mesh covers.

Shadowline LED headlights, with darkened inlays adorning their upper edges are also standard. Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Laserlight including BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling high beam assistant are available as the optional Visibility Package.

The most striking design feature alongside the prominently flared wheel arches are the extended side sills. Together with the attachment parts for the front and rear aprons, they form a High-gloss Black band around the whole of the car. The traditional M gills are integrated neatly into the front side panels and the M-specific High-gloss Black exterior mirrors have aerodynamically optimised contouring. The roof of both models is made from high-tech carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).

Two fins running longitudinally over the CFRP roof optimise airflow, as does the rear spoiler, which is painted in High-gloss Black and has a central notch. The rear diffuser, finished in black and with eye-catching fins, frames the exhaust system’s pairs of tailpipes (each measuring 100mm in diameter). Darkened, full-LED rear light clusters with L-shaped taillights complete the rear end.

Exclusive exterior paint shades and optional M Carbon exterior package
Customers can now also specify their BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé in the new and exclusive exterior paint shades Sao Paulo Yellow non-metallic, Toronto Red metallic and Isle of Man Green metallic.

A model-specific M Carbon exterior package is also available, comprising of inlays for the newly designed wide front air intakes and a rear diffuser, exterior mirror caps and a rear spoiler all made from CFRP. It is available individually or as part of the optional M Carbon Package, which also includes the M Carbon bucket seats.

New M light-alloy wheels with larger diameter at the rear
The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and BMW M4 Competition Coupé come as standard with a new M light-alloy design using 19-inch wheels at the front and 20-inch wheels at the and, for the first time, with M brakes available in Blue, Red or Black.

Interior: ergonomic design intensifies M feeling
The latest interior design language introduced in the new BMW 3 Series and new BMW 4 Series Coupé has been taken to its sporting extreme in these two high-performance models.

Signature M details include red accents for the M buttons on the M leather steering wheel and the start/stop button on the centre console. The selector lever with-Drivelogic switch is leather surfaced with an embedded M logo and stitching in M colours.

An anthracite-coloured BMW Individual headliner and interior trim strips in Carbon Fibre High-gloss are standard. Fine-grain Merino black leather trim is standard as are M sport seats, which are electrically adjustable and heated. These seats have pronounced side bolsters, integrated head restraints and an illuminated model badge.

A highlight of the options list is the new M Carbon bucket seats for the driver and front passenger, which include CFRP in their construction and save 9.6kg over the standard M sport seats. These can be specified on their own or within the M Carbon Package.

An array of new additions to the standard and optional equipment lists ensure that comfort and functionality are also taken to new highs. The BMW Live Cockpit Professional with a fully digital display grouping, the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant are all standard.

The fully digital display grouping – made up of a high-resolution instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch screen behind the steering wheel and a 10.25-inch Control Display – is part of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional, which is fitted as standard.

BMW Maps and optimised smartphone integration
BMW Live Cockpit Professional also includes a multimedia system, the cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system, two USB ports for data transfer and a WiFi interface, plus a built-in SIM card with 4G LTE connectivity. This enables use of numerous other digital services including BMW TeleServices and Intelligent Emergency Call, Real Time Traffic Information with hazard warning, Remote Services and Concierge Services. Wireless charging for compatible smartphones is also part of the standard specification.

Optimised smartphone integration also features as standard. Alongside Apple CarPlay, Android Auto can now also be used via the car’s operating system. Meanwhile, the Remote Software Upgrade function enables improved vehicle functions and additional digital services to be imported into the car over the air.

Wide variety of option packages for enhancing comfort and individuality
The significant additions to the standard specification of the predecessor models and an attractive selection of option packages also help to enhance driving comfort. The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé are equipped as standard with three-zone automatic climate control, and configurable LED interior lighting with ambient lighting.  The BMW Head-Up Display, along with the 16 speaker Harman Kardon HiFi and BMW Gesture Control are added to the list of standard features, whilst on the outside Sun Protection glazing and new Shadowline Headlights feature for the first time.

Customers can choose from a variety of optional Packages – Comfort, M Carbon, Visibility, Technology Plus, M Pro and Ultimate. Each has been compiled to further elevate the M experience and tailor it to the customer’s preference, the individual components perfectly complementing each other.

M Pro Package: reduced weight, increased performance
The M Pro Package – offered for the first time for the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé – combines M Carbon ceramics with the M Driver package for customers who are focused on using their vehicle on the race circuit.

Improved choice and customisation
Customers of the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé are being offered more choice than ever before. Alongside the choice of three standard brake callipers and the M Carbon ceramics, customers are able to choose any exterior paint colour from BMW Individual Paints – giving customers more bespoke paint options that any other model in the BMW range.

For the first time on the M3 and M4, customers will also have a choice between two wheel designs available in four colours. Available in 19” or 20” M Forged alloys, customers can chose between Double Spoke 826M in Bicolour Black or Jet Black or Double Spoke 825M in either Bicolour Black or Orbit Grey Matt.

Just a few weeks on from its world premiere, BMW M introduces a very special edition model of the new BMW M4 Competition Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 10.2 l/100 km [27.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 234 g/km). Created in collaboration with New York lifestyle brand Kith, the BMW M4 Competition x KITH is limited to just 150 units and features unique exterior and interior design details. BMW M GmbH has picked up the vibe from the youthful and influential fashion scene and replicated its partnership with contemporary artist FUTURA 2000 by breaking into an expanding market. For Kith founder and BMW enthusiast Ronnie Fieg, the collaboration brings an emotional journey full circle. The BMW M4 Competition x KITH can be pre-ordered from 23 October. At the same time, Kith will be offering a 96‑piece collection of exclusively designed apparel and accessories in all its stores and online.

“Everything we work on at Kith has to come from an authentic place,” says Kith founder Ronnie Fieg. “Some of my favourite memories from growing up are going to visit my grandfather and riding around in his BMWs in the 1980s. I remember he had an E21 320i and that his prized possession was an E30 M3. These moments in my life really shaped my passion for BMW, so working on this project with them has brought everything full circle.”

Fieg recently acquired his own example of the legendary BMW E30 M3. And BMW M GmbH lined up this consummately prepared first-generation M3 for the official presentation of the collaboration at the Kith pop‑up store in Brooklyn on 23 October. Alongside it was the unique new representative of the latest, sixth-generation version of the high-performance model. Like Fieg’s car, the BMW M4 Design Study by KITH is painted in the Cinnabar Red shade originally used for the E30 M3. This paint finish is no longer available for the regular BMW range, but was selected here specially for the BMW M4 Design Study by KITH to emphasise the connection between the two cars.

The M4 Competition badge on the model’s boot lid has been replaced by a black Kith logo with BMW M stripes in the same style. This logo also appears in illuminated form below the head restraints in the M Carbon bucket seats, and Kith lettering is embossed into the black leather of the head restraints and centre console.

The leather with embossed lettering selected for this very individual model was also used for the seat covers in Fieg’s BMW E30 M3. Here, the Kith logo with BMW M stripes has silver lettering, while a special version of the period BMW logo adorns the bonnet, boot lid and steering wheel, with “Kith” replacing “BMW”.

Merging logos is a hallmark of the many partnerships Kith has forged with other globally renowned companies. But this is the first time BMW has altered its badge for a collaboration partner. The fusion logo created for the 150 units of the BMW M4 Competition x KITH adds an extra ring around the BMW roundel in the BMW M colours light blue, dark blue and red. Plus, there are details in bright lettering focusing on Kith and the collaboration. The rear of the BMW M4 Competition x KITH also has the black Kith logo with BMW M stripes. The special-edition models are available exclusively with the matte paint finishes Frozen Black, Frozen Dark Silver and Frozen Brilliant White in homage to the three most popular colours for the BMW E30 M3 back in the day.

One of the main highlights of the special-edition models is the Kith carbon-fibre roof design. For this optional extra, grey Kith lettering with BMW M stripes is woven into the roof surface. M Compound brakes with red callipers bearing the M logo come as standard. These are clearly visible through the double spokes of the M forged wheels 826M bi-colour / Jet Black, high-gloss (front: 19-inch, rear: 20-inch).

Inside the BMW M4 Competition x KITH the tri-colour M Carbon bucket seats feature the BMW M colours light blue and red which add striking flourishes to the Merino full-leather trim in Black. As in Ronnie Fieg’s BMW E30 M3, Kith lettering is embossed into the black leather of the front and rear head restraints and centre armrest of the BMW M4 Competition x KITH. The centre console features an exclusive badge with the Kith logo and BMW M stripes. The illuminated M badge below the front head restraints also has Kith lettering.

The special-edition model has the same technical profile as the BMW M4 Competition Coupé. The new six-cylinder in-line engine is cut from the high-revving BMW M GmbH mould and uses the latest version of M TwinPower Turbo technology to produce 375 kW (510 hp), while torque peaks at 650 Nm (479 lb-ft). The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission Drivelogic is fitted as standard. The sprint from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) takes just 3.9 seconds, while 200 km/h (124 mph) is reached in 12.5 seconds. As well as classical rear-wheel drive, the BMW M4 Competition x KITH can – like the BMW M4 Competition Coupé – be specified as an option with M xDrive all-wheel drive.

In addition to the standard equipment of the BMW M4 Competition Coupé and the bespoke Kith collaboration features, the special-edition model can also be ordered with a selection of other extras. Like the M Compound brakes, M forged wheels and M Carbon bucket seats, the M Carbon exterior package, BMW Laserlight and BMW Individual lights Shadowline are standard. Plus, the cabin features Carbon Fibre interior trim strips and controls with electroplated applications. Deliveries of the limited-edition BMW M4 Competition x KITH will begin in summer 2021.

Thirty five years after the debut of the first BMW M3, BMW is presenting the latest generation of its high-performance models that fuse track-focused performance with everyday usability.

The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé occupy very different territory - one a saloon with space for five occupants, the other a four-seater coupé - but they both achieve their common goal of delivering pure driving pleasure.

Class-leading levels of standard equipment plus options that take individualisation to new heights, especially for racetrack outings, ensure both models will continue the success of their formidable predecessors.

Optional equipment is offered in six main packages – Comfort, Technology Plus, Visibility, M Carbon, M Pro and Ultimate. Beyond these packages, there will be a select number of optional items including M Brakes in red, blue or black, M Carbon exterior, M Carbon seats and Park Assistant Plus with Drive Recorder.

Under the bonnet of the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé lies a 510hp high-revving straight-six engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, which teams up with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission as it sends its power to the rear wheels.

Both models will also be available (expected from summer 2021) with M xDrive, which offers even greater directional stability and supreme traction without compromising on agility.

The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon will be built at BMW Plant Munich, while the new BMW M4 Competition Coupé will be produced at BMW Plant Dingolfing with the market launch for both models in March 2021.

Straight-six engine delivers high performance in signature M high-revving style

The engine powering the new high-performance models sets a new high point in terms of output and torque for six-cylinder in-line petrol units from BMW. The power unit offers 60hp more than the maximum output of its predecessor models and increases its peak torque by 100Nm.

The new 3.0-litre straight-six engine combines the hallmark high-revving character of BMW M engines with the latest version of M TwinPower Turbo technology. The engine maintains peak torque up to the moment where maximum output is reached: 650Nm is on tap between 2,700 and 5,500rpm, from when maximum output of 510hp is sustained up to the 7,200rpm red line.

The M3 Competition Saloon and M4 Competition Coupé accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 3.9 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155mph, rising to 180mph if the optional M Pro Package is specified.

Bespoke M TwinPower Turbo technology

A bespoke version of M TwinPower Turbo technology includes two mono-scroll turbochargers that supply compressed air to cylinders 1–3 and 4–6 respectively. An indirect intercooler optimises the power output of the charger and its electronically controlled wastegate supports the turbochargers’ instantaneous responsiveness and heightens the effectiveness of the catalytic converters.

Other elements of M TwinPower Turbo technology include VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing. Both models meet the Euro 6d exhaust emissions standard.

 
Cooling system and oil supply designed for track use
The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé use a bespoke cooling system to ensure an optimal operating temperature in all conditions. It includes a low-temperature system that contributes to cooling the intercooler and a high-temperature system that cools the engine block and the two turbochargers.

Meanwhile, the oil supply system has also been designed to meet the challenges of dynamic track driving. The engine’s weight-minimised oil sump has two separate chambers and an integrated suction channel, while the additional suction stage allows the map-controlled oil pump to draw lubricant from the smaller chamber when extra capacity is needed.

Exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps delivers a distinctive soundtrack
A dual-branch exhaust system reduces back pressure, but also produces a fantastic soundtrack. It leads into a high-capacity rear silencer with a quartet of tailpipes finished in Black Chrome.

Electrically controlled, fully adjustable flaps suppress intrusive frequency ranges, increasing comfort levels while the sound is also influenced by the engine mode selected - the driver can choose either SPORT or SPORT+ mode using the relevant button on the centre console. It is also possible to alter the engine’s aural impact using the M Sound Control button on the centre console.

Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic as standard

Both models use a specially tuned eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. The M Steptronic transmission enables both fully automatic gear changes and manual shifts with sequential gear selection. Fitted as standard along with the newly designed selector lever are carbon gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. With a simple tap of a paddle the driver can switch from automatic to manual mode.

The transmission’s shift characteristics are adjusted using the Drivelogic button integrated into the selector lever. The driver can access three clearly distinct setups – comfort oriented, sports focused or track optimised.

M xDrive all-wheel-drive system optimises traction and performance
For the first time in the history of the BMW M3 and BMW M4, customers will be able to specify an all-wheel-drive system – expected from summer 2021 – as an alternative to traditional rear-wheel drive.

The engine’s power is distributed between the front and rear wheels via the transfer case’s electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, before the Active M Differential splits it again between the two rear wheels.

The specially developed system significantly enhances acceleration from standstill and the driver can configure the distribution of power as required via the Setup menu. In the default 4WD setting, signature M rear-biased power transmission goes hand-in-hand with unshakable traction and precisely controllable handling. 4WD Sport mode directs a greater proportion of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels to optimise track performance. Switching off DSC brings 2WD mode into the equation, with no intervention from the control systems.

Chassis delivers hallmark M precision and scope for individualisation
Both new models also include advances in body rigidity and aerodynamic efficiency, plus optimised, tuned chassis technology. A long wheelbase and wide tracks, a low centre of gravity and virtually 50:50 weight distribution, plus stiffer, stronger and M-specific body and chassis mountings contribute to excellent driving dynamics.

Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers
The electronically controlled shock absorbers in the standard adaptive M suspension optimise road contact and traction in every situation with the use of electromagnetically controlled valves that act in just a few milliseconds to generate the required damping force. It is infinitely variable, and for each individual wheel.

Basic damper characteristics can be adjusted via the M Setup menu. The driver can select from three modes – COMFORT, SPORT and the track-focused SPORT PLUS.

Integrated braking system with two pedal feel settings
In standard form, the newly developed M Compound brakes comprise six-piston fixed-calliper brakes with 380mm discs at the front and single-piston floating-calliper brakes (including parking brake) with 370mm discs at the rear. The callipers are available for the first time in either black or red in addition to the blue callipers known from the predecessor models; all bear the M logo.

The optional M Carbon ceramic brakes, available as part of the M Pro Package, offer even stronger braking power and durability. Their callipers – painted in Gold metallic – engage with 400mm discs at the front and 380mm items at the rear.

A shared feature of both brake variants is the integrated braking system, where the brake actuation, braking force assistance and braking control functions are brought together within a compact module. The integrated braking system allows vehicle deceleration to be geared precisely to the driver’s requirements.

The M-specific version of the integrated braking system additionally presents the driver with two pedal feel settings – COMFORT and SPORT, which can be selected via the M Setup menu.

DSC with M Dynamic Mode and ten-stage traction control
The DSC functions in the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé work even more effectively with the integrated braking system.

Along with the M-specific Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Cornering Brake Control (CBC), the integrated braking system also benefits the stability control function, as well as the Automatic Differential Brake (ADB-X), Brake Assist, Dry Braking and Start-Off Assistant functions. Competition models add the Automatic Hold function.

The new integrated wheel-slip limitation function provides more sensitive acceleration control on wet, snow-covered or icy surfaces or on uneven roads.

The driver can also activate M Dynamic Mode using a button on the centre console. This mode allows a greater degree of wheel slip, enabling controlled drifts to be achieved. Also selectable at the push of a button is DSC Off mode.

With M Drive Professional, drivers also benefit from the new M Traction Control function. Making its debut in the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé, this new form of traction control allows the driver to set the intervention thresholds for wheel-slip limitation.

With different stages of precisely defined slip at the driven wheels, the driver can find the perfect balance of racing-car performance and directional stability.

M Drive Professional: unbeatable performance on the race track
The latest generation of the M-specific control/operation system contains a host of new features. Making its debut is M Drive Professional, which has been developed specifically for track driving. Included as standard, this allows the driver to make consistent progress in their pursuit of the ideal line and the perfect lap. For example, the driver’s ability to pilot the car through corners with plenty of oversteer and opposite lock is recorded by the M Drift Analyser, activated via the iDrive menu.

Other functions of M Drive Professional include the M Laptimer, also accessed via the iDrive menu, which delivers a far-reaching race performance analysis. The driver can also analyse the data recorded during their track outing in detail using the BMW M Laptimer app on their Apple iPhone – and share selected information with the online community if they wish.

Enhanced individualisation of the powertrain and chassis via the Setup button

 As in the predecessor models, drivers of the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé can activate various settings for the engine, chassis and steering independently of one another. In addition, the braking system and traction control can now also be configured as required.

The new Setup button on the centre console provides direct access to the settings options for the seven powertrain and chassis parameters. Depending on the model variant and the car’s specification, the Gear Shift Assistant, M xDrive and traction can also be controlled via the button in just a single step.

Two individually configured M Setup variants can be stored permanently, together with the preferred settings for the engine noise, the driving stability control system, the Auto Start-Stop function and the shift characteristics of the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.

Pure driving pleasure at your fingertips: the M Mode button

The control panel on the centre console of the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé also houses the M Mode button.

This can be used to adjust the responses and characteristics of the driver assistance systems and the displays in the instrument cluster and Head-Up Display. The driver can choose from ROAD, SPORT and TRACK settings.

In the basic ROAD setting, all the standard and optional driver assistance systems are fully activated. In the SPORT setting, the driver assistance systems activated through the driver’s chosen configuration limit themselves to warnings of speed limits and overtaking restrictions, for example.

Utilising M Drive Professional, drivers can also select TRACK mode, which is developed exclusively for driving on race circuits and includes the deactivation of all the comfort and safety functions of the driver assistance systems.

Driver assistance systems: comfort and safety as desired
Both models come as standard with Parking Assistant, Cruise control with braking function and Front Collision Warning with brake intervention, the Lane Departure Warning system including lane return with steering assistance, the Attentiveness Assistant and the Speed Limit Info system.

Also standard is Driving Assistant, which brings the Lane Change Warning, rear crossing traffic warning and Rear Collision Prevention into play. Customers can also add the Driving Assistant Professional as part of the optional Technology Plus Pack, which includes the Steering and Lane Control Assistant with new Active Navigation function. The new Emergency Lane Assistant, meanwhile, guides the car automatically to the most appropriate side of its lane in tailbacks on the motorway.

The Parking Assistant comprises functions such as the Reversing Assistant, while Parking Assistant Plus, available individually or as part of the optional Technology Plus Package, adds Surround View and Remote 3D View.

Also included in this package is the BMW Drive Recorder which uses the driver assistance systems’ cameras to record video sequences outside the car of up to 40 seconds in length.

Standout styling from the M-specific kidney grille to the standard carbon roof

The distinctive, aerodynamically optimised exteriors of both new models perfectly convey their motorsport-inspired character. The BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé add 122mm to the length of their predecessors and are 26mm and 17mm wider respectively.

Both models have a deep, frameless and all-black BMW kidney grille. The hallmark M double bars – now horizontally arranged – bear a model badge; either side of the grille are additional cooling intakes with honeycomb mesh covers.

Shadowline LED headlights, with darkened inlays adorning their upper edges are also standard. Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Laserlight including BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling high beam assistant are available as the optional Visibility Package.

The most striking design feature alongside the prominently flared wheel arches are the extended side sills. Together with the attachment parts for the front and rear aprons, they form a High-gloss Black band around the whole of the car. The traditional M gills are integrated neatly into the front side panels and the M-specific High-gloss Black exterior mirrors have aerodynamically optimised contouring. The roof of both models is made from high-tech carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).

Two fins running longitudinally over the CFRP roof optimise airflow, as does the rear spoiler, which is painted in High-gloss Black and has a central notch. The rear diffuser, finished in black and with eye-catching fins, frames the exhaust system’s pairs of tailpipes (each measuring 100mm in diameter). Darkened, full-LED rear light clusters with L-shaped taillights complete the rear end.

Exclusive exterior paint shades and optional M Carbon exterior package
Customers can now also specify their BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé in the new and exclusive exterior paint shades Sao Paulo Yellow non-metallic, Toronto Red metallic and Isle of Man Green metallic.

A model-specific M Carbon exterior package is also available, comprising of inlays for the newly designed wide front air intakes and a rear diffuser, exterior mirror caps and a rear spoiler all made from CFRP. It is available individually or as part of the optional M Carbon Package, which also includes the M Carbon bucket seats.

New M light-alloy wheels with larger diameter at the rear
The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and BMW M4 Competition Coupé come as standard with a new M light-alloy design using 19-inch wheels at the front and 20-inch wheels at the and, for the first time, with M brakes available in Blue, Red or Black.

Interior: ergonomic design intensifies M feeling
The latest interior design language introduced in the new BMW 3 Series and new BMW 4 Series Coupé has been taken to its sporting extreme in these two high-performance models.

Signature M details include red accents for the M buttons on the M leather steering wheel and the start/stop button on the centre console. The selector lever with-Drivelogic switch is leather surfaced with an embedded M logo and stitching in M colours.

An anthracite-coloured BMW Individual headliner and interior trim strips in Carbon Fibre High-gloss are standard. Fine-grain Merino black leather trim is standard as are M sport seats, which are electrically adjustable and heated. These seats have pronounced side bolsters, integrated head restraints and an illuminated model badge.

A highlight of the options list is the new M Carbon bucket seats for the driver and front passenger, which include CFRP in their construction and save 9.6kg over the standard M sport seats. These can be specified on their own or within the M Carbon Package.

An array of new additions to the standard and optional equipment lists ensure that comfort and functionality are also taken to new highs. The BMW Live Cockpit Professional with a fully digital display grouping, the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant are all standard.

The fully digital display grouping – made up of a high-resolution instrument cluster with a 12.3-inch screen behind the steering wheel and a 10.25-inch Control Display – is part of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional, which is fitted as standard.

BMW Maps and optimised smartphone integration
BMW Live Cockpit Professional also includes a multimedia system, the cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system, two USB ports for data transfer and a WiFi interface, plus a built-in SIM card with 4G LTE connectivity. This enables use of numerous other digital services including BMW TeleServices and Intelligent Emergency Call, Real Time Traffic Information with hazard warning, Remote Services and Concierge Services. Wireless charging for compatible smartphones is also part of the standard specification.

Optimised smartphone integration also features as standard. Alongside Apple CarPlay, Android Auto can now also be used via the car’s operating system. Meanwhile, the Remote Software Upgrade function enables improved vehicle functions and additional digital services to be imported into the car over the air.

Wide variety of option packages for enhancing comfort and individuality
The significant additions to the standard specification of the predecessor models and an attractive selection of option packages also help to enhance driving comfort. The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé are equipped as standard with three-zone automatic climate control, and configurable LED interior lighting with ambient lighting.  The BMW Head-Up Display, along with the 16 speaker Harman Kardon HiFi and BMW Gesture Control are added to the list of standard features, whilst on the outside Sun Protection glazing and new Shadowline Headlights feature for the first time.

Customers can choose from a variety of optional Packages – Comfort, M Carbon, Visibility, Technology Plus, M Pro and Ultimate. Each has been compiled to further elevate the M experience and tailor it to the customer’s preference, the individual components perfectly complementing each other.

M Pro Package: reduced weight, increased performance
The M Pro Package – offered for the first time for the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé – combines M Carbon ceramics with the M Driver package for customers who are focused on using their vehicle on the race circuit.

Improved choice and customisation
Customers of the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon and new BMW M4 Competition Coupé are being offered more choice than ever before. Alongside the choice of three standard brake callipers and the M Carbon ceramics, customers are able to choose any exterior paint colour from BMW Individual Paints – giving customers more bespoke paint options that any other model in the BMW range.

For the first time on the M3 and M4, customers will also have a choice between two wheel designs available in four colours. Available in 19” or 20” M Forged alloys, customers can chose between Double Spoke 826M in Bicolour Black or Jet Black or Double Spoke 825M in either Bicolour Black or Orbit Grey Matt.

Munich. BMW M GmbH is currently preparing the generation change for the iconic sports cars. With driving dynamics tests performed under racetrack conditions, the series development process for the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 25.9 – 26.9 mpg; CO₂ emissions combined: 249 – 239 g/km, preliminary data) is entering its crucial phase. With a significant increase in performance vs. predecessor models and an M-specific suspension setup, newly developed straight six-cylinder engines once again set benchmarks in the segment of high-performance saloons and coupés of the premium midrange class. Comprehensive innovations in the areas of drive, wheel suspension, springs, dampers and braking technology require thorough testing on public roads at the BMW Group testing centres in Miramas, Southern France, in the Swedish town of Arjeplog as well as on a number of different racetracks.

Traditionally, the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring sets the yardstick for the perfect interaction between drive and suspension technology in every situation. However, because the performance characteristics of a BMW M automobile have to convince not only there but also on the most varied racetrack profiles, the test engineers always expand the test programme to include further circuits such as the current test drives with camouflaged prototypes of the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé at the Sachsenring.

A few months before their world premiere mid-September 2020, the dynamic potential of the new BMW M3 Saloon and the new BMW M4 Coupé is already clearly perceptible. Inspiring agility, outstanding dynamics and precisely controllable handling even in extreme sporting situations characterise their driving behaviour. The balance between superior performance and unrestricted everyday suitability so typical of an M attains a new level. “With each BMW M automobile, we put motorsport technology on the road,” says Markus Flasch, chairman of the board of the BMW M GmbH. “The new BMW M3 Saloon and the new BMW M4 Coupé embody this principle in a particularly intensive way, because both models stand unmistakably in the tradition of the most successful touring car worldwide. And results of the test drives show us that the new model generation is significantly superior to that of its predecessors in terms of performance.”

Like all current high-performance-automobiles from the BMW M GmbH, the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé are offered in two performance levels: Besides a 480 hp variant with a 6-speed manual shift, there is also the choice of a Competition model with 510 hp and an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. “For customers who prefer a puristic performance experience and particularly intense interaction with their vehicle, the model variants with a manual transmission constitute an offer that is unique in this segment,” explains Dirk Häcker, head of Development M Automobiles and BMW Individual. “On the other hand, with the Competition versions of the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé, we are addressing maximum dynamics in regards power development and transfer – initially with classic rear-wheel drive and, at a later date, also in conjunction with the latest version of our four-wheel drive system M xDrive.”

Compared with the predecessor models, the straight six-cylinder engines featured by the new high-performance sports cars deliver a maximum output increase of 49 hp and 60 hp (Competition models) and a maximum torque of up to 650 Nm. Moreover, thanks to M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving concept, the power plant impresses with performance characteristics derived from motor racing. The power unit excels through extraordinarily spontaneous response in every speed range and is also deployed in the BMW M4 GT3, which will become the new top-of-the-rage model from the BMW M GmbH in the customer sport segment as from the 2022 season. 

With a meticulously operated testing programme, development and testing engineers at the BMW M GmbH are currently making sure that the M-specific suspension components are tuned to the engine’s performance characteristics to such an extent that they guarantee the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé places in the first row of the starting grid in their vehicle segment. The around 3,670-metre stretch at the tradition-steeped Sachsenring, which is known as the long-standing venue of the German Touring Car Masters (DTM) racing series, also offers the ideal prerequisites for this purpose. With its challenging profile comprising hairpin bends, long straights and the downhill passage before the Queckenberg bend, it is possible lap after lap to achieve targeted optimisation of the longitudinal and lateral driving dynamics of the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé.

An exclusive new BMW M4 ///M Heritage Edition will make its world debut on the legendary racetrack in the Eifel on 13 September. Based on the BMW M4 DTM developed by BMW M Motorsport, the special edition BMW M4 Coupe is available to UK customers in three striking colour combinations: Laguna Seca Blue, Velvet Blue metallic and Imola Red, replicating the colours of the BMW M GmbH logo. Originally seen on the track with racing cars such as the BMW 3.0 CSL, now the distinctive stripes stand for exhilarating performance and exclusive design, also on the road.

The high performance coupe, powered by a 450hp straight six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology will be produced and sold worldwide between November 2019 and April 2020 as an edition model and is limited to 75 units in the UK.

Furthermore, the carbon-fibre reinforced plastic roof boasts a striking decorative strip in the BMW M colours, which is integrated into the CFRP composite at the factory using a special manufacturing process. Likewise unique are the forged, 20-inch M light alloy wheels in a star spoke design finished in Orbit Grey matt and fitted with mixed tyres.

The interior of the edition model is also characterised by an exclusive selection of colours and materials. The spectrum of equipment includes model-specific Full Merino M leather seats in a bicolour design and with prominent openings within the area of the seatbacks. Each seat colour is oriented towards the exterior paint and is complemented by partly bicoloured contrast stitching. In conjunction with the unique exterior colours, the seats come in Silverstone/Black with turquoise stitching when the car is finished in Laguna Seca Blue or Velvet Blue and Orange when the car is finished in Velvet Blue. The Imola Red Edition models feature a Bicolour Red and Black interior which is complemented by exclusive red and yellow contrast stitching.

The appealing and exclusive colour scheme continues with a unique carbon fibre interior trim designed exclusively for the BMW M4 ///M Heritage Edition. The CFRP structure of the trim incorporates the stripe design featuring the three characteristic M colours. Both the interior trim and the door sills bear emblems with the imprints “Edition ///M Heritage” and “1/750” as an indication of the limited run of this model. The lettering “///M Heritage” – in turquoise, orange or red respectively – is also embossed on the front driver and passenger seat headrests.

The BMW M4 ///M Heritage Edition is on sale from 3 September 2019 with full pricing details to follow. Deliveries are expected to commence from November 2019.

To celebrate the success of Marco Wittmann securing yet another DTM driver’s title at the season finale at the Hockenheimring, BMW M is launching the BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition. The new edition model consists of top-class motor racing technology for drive and suspension as well as a specific design that mimics the DTM racing cars built by BMW Motorsport and delivers a power output of 500hp and a maximum torque of 600Nm.

The BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition completes the sprint from zero to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds and has a top speed is limited to 190mph* thanks to the innovative water injection technology featured in the straight six-cylinder power unit, previously seen on the BMW M4 GTS. This innovative technology enables cooling of the combustion chambers, significantly raising the engine’s thermally-related performance limits by 16 per cent in power output compared to the production model.

Distinctive exterior design inspired by DTM racing cars.
The BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition 2016 is exclusively available in Alpine White. Design and shaping of the additional foiling is reminiscent of the look of DTM racing cars produced by BMW Motorsport. Various aerodynamics components finished in visible carbon also give the car that distinctive racing car look. These include the front splitter, the aero flicks positioned in front of the front wheel arches, exterior mirror caps, side skirt attachments, and a rear diffuser as well as the large rear wing firmly mounted on the boot lid.

Pure motor sports atmosphere in a classy, reduced interior.
Inside the two-seater BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition 2016, both driver and co-driver sit in M Carbon bucket seats covered in exclusive Alcantara/Leather Merino. The entire interior is lined with exceptionally high-quality covering material Alcantara, also used on the M Sports steering wheel featuring a grey “12 o’clock” marker. Behind the front bucket seats of the BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition, a white rollover bar replaces the rear seat system.

In terms of comfort and safety, the new edition is by no means sparsely equipped. Features include the BMW Professional Navigation system, air conditioning, adaptive LED headlights with BMW Selective Beam (glare-free high beam assistant), OLED taillights, Park Distance Control (PDC) at the front and rear as well as automatically dimming interior and exterior mirrors. Full UK specification will be announced in due course.

Extensive measures to enhance driving dynamics.
In comparison to the production version of the BMW M4, the DTM Champion Edition impresses not only with enhanced performance, but also with further optimized dynamic handling qualities. This is also the result of even more consistent implementation of the lightweight construction concept. In addition to other components, the bonnet, roof, instrument panel support and rear diffuser are made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). The end silencer of the double-flow sports exhaust system featuring two pairs of tailpipes is made of exceptionally lightweight titanium.

Optimal contact with the road is ensured by Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 high-performance tyres size 265/35 R19 at the front and 285/30 R20 at the rear designed specifically for use on the racetrack and mounted on light alloys boasting a star spoke design 666 M in Orbit Grey matt. M carbon-ceramic brakes guarantee fade-free braking even in tough racing conditions. The individually adjustable 3-way coilover suspension is mechanically adjustable both for rebound and damping, thus allowing the car’s handling characteristics to be adapted according to personal taste.

Ultra-desirable, lightweight performance models have always been part of the BMW philosophy. These limited-edition M-badged cars always deliver the ultimate in sports-oriented design, power with efficiency and precise driving dynamics. Today, that family lineage welcomes its latest member – the all-new BMW M4 GTS.

Quite simply, it is the fastest production road car the brand has ever offered to customers. Developed and tested extensively at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, it has recorded a lap time of 7mins 28 secs – almost 30 seconds quicker than a standard M4.

Unique exterior design elements demonstrate the performance credentials of the car, and include the world premiere of BMW’s Organic Light with LED (OLED) lighting technology on a series-production model. Inside, the rear bench has been completely removed to save weight, leaving two carbon-fibre sports seats.

Under the bonnet is an enhanced version of the 3.0-litre six-cylinder twin-turbo petrol engine, tuned to deliver 500hp. The result is a car which accelerates from zero to 62mph in only 3.8 seconds, and has a top speed limited to 190mph.


With its intelligent lightweight design, the new BMW M4 GTS has a kerb weight of only 1,510kg. It has been engineered to provide a truly authentic motorsport-derived driving experience, agile and potent in every way. With precision handling and unprecedented levels of feedback, it is focused on track use, but meets all global regulations for use on public roads.

The car’s one-year production run will see just 700 examples built worldwide, with UK sales of 30 units. That equates to four per cent of the total, making Britain the fourth-largest market.

The M4 GTS will make its world debut at the Tokyo Motor Show on 28 October. Production will begin in March 2016 with launch scheduled for June 2016. The UK price is £121,770 OTR .

M Cars: Setting the pace in the sports car class over five decades
Founded in 1972 under its original name of BMW Motorsport GmbH, BMW’s performance-oriented M division has a proud and successful history of limited-edition models. That began in 1988 with the launch of M3 Evolution, and continued with the BMW M3 Sport Evolution (1990), the BMW M3 GT (1995), the BMW M3 CSL (2003), the BMW M3 GTS (2010) and the BMW M3 CRT (2011).

With a new naming strategy in place for the mid-size coupé, the lineage continues with the new BMW M4 GTS. It is a car for passionate and enthusiastic drivers, a state-of-the-art showcase of the engineering expertise of the M team. Boasting powerful, motor sport-inspired looks and high-performance innovations in powertrain, chassis and lightweight construction the M4 GTS has its sights set squarely on the race track. A lap time of 7 mins 28 secs minutes around the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife is a clear statement of its exceptional abilities.

Limited to 700 units, the largest market will be the USA, accounting for 43 per cent of production. This car marks the first time that a high-performance special edition in the M3/M4 model range has made available in the important North American market.

It allows us to demonstrate what is possible today with a road-legal car.”

The engine: the beating heart of every BMW M car

The BMW M4 GTS uses the award-winning six-cylinder in-line M TwinPower turbo engine from the BMW M4 Coupé. However, innovative water injection technology has been utilised to give the 3.0-litre unit a substantial power boost. It relaxes the thermal constraints on power and torque, and has already proved itself on race tracks around the world this season, on board the BMW M4 MotoGP Safety Car.

Water is injected as a fine spray into the intake manifold plenum chamber where it evaporates, significantly lowering the temperature of the intake air. This reduces the final compression temperature in the combustion chamber, which also reduces the risk of unburnt fuel and ‘engine knock’. Consequently, it allows the turbocharged engine to operate with higher boost pressure and earlier spark timing. The result is increased power and torque, and a substantial improvement in efficiency.

Water for the system is housed in a 5-litre tank in the car’s boot. Under hard track driving, it would need to be topped up every time the vehicle is refuelled, but under normal operating conditions the intervals are much longer. Even with fast motorway driving, it will only need attention every fifth refuelling stop. Otherwise the system is maintenance-free, for maximum everyday practicality.

The BMW M4 GTS is the first production road car to be fitted with such innovative technology. It raises the engine’s output significantly from 431hp in the standard car to 500hp, and increases torque from 550Nm to 600Nm. The zero to 62mph time drops from 4.1 seconds to 3.8 seconds. Fuel economy remains unchanged at 34mpg, CO2 emissions increase marginally to 199g/km and the BMW M4 GTS complies with the EU6 emissions standard.

Capable of 7,600rpm and with peak power at 6,250rpm, the engine offers linear power delivery over a wide engine speed range. The M TwinPower Turbo package comprises two fast-responding mono-scroll turbochargers, high-precision injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and Double-VANOS continuously variable camshaft timing. The valve and camshaft timing work in tandem to seamlessly control intake valve lift. The result is smooth and efficient power delivery, very sharp response and reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

The engine is mated to a seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT), which selects the optimum ratio for every driving situation. It means no interruption to the flow of power to the rear wheels. The driver can also select gears manually using either shift paddles on the steering wheel or the selector lever. Equipped with three Drivelogic shift programs – engaged using the Drivelogic button on the centre console – each offers a different gear-change speed and alters the rpm points at which the shifts take place. Both DriveLogic and the car’s Launch Control technology have been re-tuned to complement the engine’s increased output.

Lightweight design at every opportunity

Intelligent lightweight construction has allowed BMW’s M engineers to limit the car’s DIN kerb weight to just 1,510kg. That means an outstanding weight-to-power ratio of 3.0kg/hp, creating the perfect platform for a highly dynamic driving experience. The rigorous weight-saving measures extend through both the interior and exterior. For example, changes include carbon-fibre bucket seats; a lightweight centre console, rear seat panelling and boot partition; and special lightweight door and side panel trim, which includes M striped door pull loops in place of solid handles.

The same commitment extends to details which are out of view. For example, the instrument panel bracing tube is made from carbon fibre, while the bonnet, roof and front splitter are constructed from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). All lightweight components play an important role in lowering the centre of gravity and further improving axle load distribution.

Exterior design

With its muscular contours, prominent three-dimensional styling and dramatic splitter – complete with Acid Orange and exposed carbon fibre detailing – there is no mistaking the BMW M4 GTS. It paints a picture of uncompromising sports performance and highlights the car’s superior performance.

The splitter divides the air, channelling part of it deliberately under the car to optimise aerodynamics. It can be set in two different positions, for road and track. Other characteristic design elements, such as the familiar twin circular Adaptive LED headlights, and the eye-catching front grille with M double slat bars in black, have been reworked to create real presence on the road.

Hallmarks such as the striking M division exterior mirrors with twin-stalks and the powerdome bonnet are there. Made from CFRP, it weighs 25 per cent less than an aluminium equivalent and features a large air vent for cooling and reduction in front-end lift.

The flanks feature many M car signatures. The long bonnet, long wheelbase, set-back greenhouse and short overhangs are emphasised by contemporary design elements such as the muscular wheel arches and dramatic surfacing. Also present are the M gills, finished in high-gloss black like the kidney grille surround, which house breathers to optimise airflow. Viewed in profile, the dark-coloured, clear-coated CFRP roof and sweeping roofline gives the BMW M4 GTS an aggressive and low-to-the-road look.

Unmissable at the rear is the striking spoiler. It’s attached to the boot lid by two intricate aluminium struts, for high stiffness and low weight. It can be adjusted through three positions, one for road driving and two others that can be selected according to individual preference on the track.

The car features a titanium quad-pipe exhaust system. Each pipe has a diameter of 80mm and a laser-engraved M emblem. Key to the appeal of any performance car is its exhaust note, and the BMW M4 GTS is no different. An emotionally charged and unmistakable BMW M sound is audible over the entire engine speed range.

The exhaust pipes are framed by a rear apron and flank the exposed carbon-fibre diffuser. It works with the car’s other aerodynamic features to optimise airflow, improving downforce and road-holding.

The wheels are another visible treat which set the M4 GTS apart. The forged M light-alloy wheels (19-inch at the front, 20-inch at the rear), feature a distinctive star-spoke design in Acid Orange and polished surfacing. They’re fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres (265/35 R19 at the front, 285/30 R20 at the rear). Developed specifically for the BMW M4 GTS and integrated into the design of the suspension right from the drawing board, they play a role in the car’s outstanding mechanical traction and feedback through corners.

The interior

The flawless ergonomics and clear driver focus of the BMW M4 GTS interior are evidence of the car’s design brief to deliver top-class driver enjoyment. The interior architecture takes its cues from motorsport and includes two carbon-fibre bucket seats as standard, providing excellent lateral support and comfort over long distances. They also weigh 50 per cent less than those in the standard M4.

Seat covers are finished in Merino leather with contrast stitching, anthracite-coloured Alcantara and M stripes on the backrests. The M sports steering wheel, also covered in anthracite-coloured Alcantara, has a perforated stripe in contrasting Acid Orange at the top to mark the central position.

The new centre console of the BMW M4 GTS is asymmetric in design and lightweight in construction. Like the handbrake lever gaiter, it’s covered in anthracite-coloured Alcantara with edging in dark grey contrast stitching. The interior door panels and rear side panels include lightweight design elements produced specially for the BMW M4 GTS. Door handles have been replaced by pull loops to save weight.

The rear seats have been replaced by an innovative glass-fibre-reinforced plastic (GFRP) shelf, combined with a rear panel made from a carbon-fibre sandwich construction both covered in anthracite-coloured Alcantara. Lowering the car’s weight and centre of gravity, they ensure exceptional rigidity.

Chassis and driving dynamics: unbeatable precision and feedback

The BMW M division specialises in developing cars that combine precise steering, excellent controllability even in extreme driving situations, and outstanding agility. The new M4 GTS continues the brand’s commitment to cars which offer a refined driving experience, combined with superb traction and stability.

First and foremost, dynamic driving depends on mechanical systems which combine low weight with high stiffness. Specially designed for the BMW M4 GTS, the three-way M coilover suspension features adjustable compression and rebound settings, with independent adjustment of low-speed and high-speed compression. This allows the suspension to be customised to the characteristics of different tracks. Moreover, the anti-roll bars and support mounts are closely matched to the significantly increased engine power, producing exceptional control and predictable handling.

Like the BMW M3/M4, the BMW M4 GTS is equipped with lightweight aluminium control arms, wheel carriers and axle subframes. Just on the front axle, this cuts weight by 5kg compared with using conventional steel components. Play-free ball joints and specially developed elastomer bearings provide optimal, direct transmission of longitudinal and transverse forces. The aluminium stiffening plate, CFRP front strut tower brace and additional bolted connections between the axle subframe and body structure all make for a stiffer front end.

At the rear, all control arms and wheel carriers on the five-link axle are of forged aluminium, which reduces the unsprung mass of the wheel-locating components by around three kilograms compared with a conventional design. The racing-derived rigid connection between the rear axle subframe and the body – dispensing with rubber bushings – improves wheel location and tracking stability.

 Outstanding performance from personalised driving dynamics

Drivers of the BMW M4 GTS can choose their own personal combination of drive settings, focusing on an extreme track performance set-up or a more tempered approach for road use.

The three-way M coilover suspension – specially tuned for this model – can be adjusted to individual tastes and therefore also to the demands of different race circuits. The electro-mechanical steering system was developed in-house by the BMW M division. It electronically adjusts the level of power-assist according to road speed, providing optimal steering characteristics at all speeds. The Servotronic button on the centre console offers three different settings, each with its own specific profile: COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+.

Characteristics of the electronic accelerator pedal can be customised using the M Motordynamic Control system. For track use, priority can be given to instantaneous and explosive power delivery, while on the road, a more measured response is possible. Different shift characteristics for the seven-speed M double-clutch transmission can be selected using the Drivelogic button on the centre console.

Via the M Drive menu, two sets of preferred personal configurations can be programmed into the M1 or M2 steering wheel buttons for instant access. These personalised settings for all the relevant systems can then be activated while driving at a single touch.

In keeping with its outstanding performance potential, the BMW M4 GTS is equipped as standard with lightweight, optimised, ultra-high-performance M carbon ceramic brakes. These are designed for an enhanced track capability and longer life.

Visually, they can be distinguished by their gold-painted six-piston (front) or four-piston (rear) brake callipers with coloured M logo. They boast excellent controllability, outstanding deceleration and stable, fade-resistant performance. Being much lighter than a conventional brake system, they also contribute to the all-round reduction in weight.

Other features helping to add an extra edge to the driving dynamics include the rear differential’s hollow lightweight output shafts and the Active M Differential. To optimise traction and stability, the latter uses an electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip system, adapted to the enhanced performance capability of the BMW M4 GTS. The differential is proactively controlled with extremely high precision and speed. Its control unit is linked to the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system and takes into account accelerator pedal position, wheel speeds and vehicle yaw.

M Dynamic Mode (MDM), a special DSC setting, can be activated whenever drivers want an extra-sporty driving experience. Whereas DSC focuses on correcting understeer or oversteer, MDM allows more wheel slip for controlled drifting. This mode caters to the more skilled drivers, although – unlike DSC OFF mode – the system still intervenes if the vehicle reaches a critical stability threshold. The DSC system and the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) have been configured to take account of the BMW M4 GTS’s increased performance and its newly developed three-way coilover suspension.

World-first lighting technology

The rear lights of the BMW M4 GTS are the first of any series-produced vehicle to feature BMW Organic Light with OLED technology. OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes) generate their light using wafer-thin layers of semi-conducting organic materials. Unlike LEDs, which emit their light in the form of points, OLEDs light up over their full surface with a homogeneous effect. The L-shaped flat design measures just 1.4mm in height, and has the ability to trigger individual light modules separately. This opens up fresh possibilities for a characteristic and distinctive BMW lighting design, both in daylight and during the hours of darkness.

At the front of the car are the familiar twin circular Adaptive LED headlights with corona rings to ensure the best possible illumination of the road surface. They combine cutting-edge LED technology with dazzle-free high beam assistant called BMW Selective Beam allowing the beam to follow corners and part around cars in front to provide optimum visibility in all conditions.

 Standard equipment 

The BMW M4 GTS underlines its impressive dynamic calibre with a range of carefully selected and exclusive equipment fitted at the factory. As well as the high-quality Alcantara/Merino leather interior trim, the car comes with BMW Navigation Professional, air conditioning, Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Selective Beam, Park Distance Control (PDC) at the front and rear, automatically dimming rear-view and exterior mirrors and BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim.

A selection of signature BMW M equipment is fitted as standard. This includes M door sill finishers, M footrest, M gearshift lever, M-specific circular instruments with white graphics, plus an M sports steering wheel with chrome-finish gearshift paddles.

Three colours are available for the exterior paintwork. As well as the exclusive Frozen Dark Grey metallic, customers can also choose from Sapphire Black metallic and Alpine White.

Optional extras

Owners who want to further enhance the race track credentials of their M4 GTS can fit the optional Clubsport package. It includes a roll cage in Acid Orange behind the front seats, race-specification six-point harness and a fire extinguisher. It is available at no cost.

Further individual touches can be added as optional extras. These include BMW Head-Up Display with M-specific display, BMW Online Entertainment and Internet to allow in car connection to online music streaming and internet access. 

Meanwhile, the M Lap-timer app is the perfect tool for the
BMW M4 GTS at its principal hunting ground – the race track. It records driving data for precise analysis and to help drivers improve their performance. The data can be shared with friends or acquaintances via social media.

Finally for UK vehicles, the optional Carbon Fibre Interior Performance Package can be specified which adds the unique BMW M Performance Alcantara steering wheel with OLED race display and carbon trim as well as the additional Carbon Fibre trim around the DCT Gear Selector. The OLED race display is the perfect complement for the BMW M4 GTS with two-toned LED gear-shift displays to the left and right of the wheel accompanied by the central OLED display which displays Race, Sport or EfficientDynamic mode controlled by wheel mounted buttons. Features such as a stop watch and g-meter are included and up to 50 lap times can be stored as well as the driver’s best score for speed and lateral and forward acceleration. The Carbon Fibre Interior Performance Package is available for £1,090.

Pebble Beach/Munich. A year on from the launch of the BMW M4 Coupe, BMW M Division is presenting an initial preview of a high-performance model for use on the road and, above all, on the race track: the BMW Concept M4 GTS.

The move sees BMW M Division once again returning to its roots. The BMW offshoot, founded in 1972 as BMW Motorsport GmbH, not only caused a sensation with its iconic BMW M1 racing car, but developed the first turbocharged engine to win the Formula One World Championship and was the force behind what remains the world’s most successful racing touring car – the Group A BMW M3.

And so the new BMW Concept M4 GTS continues the tradition of BMW M3 special models already illuminated by the BMW M3 Evolution (1988), BMW M3 Sport Evolution (1990), BMW M3 GT (1995), BMW M3 CSL (2003), BMW M3 GTS (2010) and BMW M3 CRT (2011). Technology honed in race competition, a hike in power, a commitment to lightweight design and limited production numbers have ensured these sharpest examples of their type offer unbeatable performance coupled with an emotionally powerful and exclusive driving experience.

“While the BMW M4 Coupe embodies the ideal combination of motor sport genes and unrestricted everyday usability, the BMW Concept M4 GTS previews an emotionally powerful and exclusive special model conceived with an eye for trailblazing technology and a keen focus on the race track,” explains Frank van Meel, President BMW M Division. “Despite its outstanding track ability, it is still fully road-legal. The BMW Concept M4 GTS showcases new technologies destined to make their series production debut in a new model to be unveiled at a later date. For example, the BMW Concept M4 GTS features the innovative water injection system that has already provided a significant output and torque boost in the BMW M4 MotoGP Safety Car. In addition, the BMW Concept M4 GTS has rear lights with OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology that give the high-performance model a whole new look when darkness falls.

The world premiere of the BMW Concept M4 GTS will take place over the course of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance weekend in California on 13 August 2015, in the company of prize-winning sports cars from years gone by.

Optimised down to the finest detail.
The BMW Concept M4 GTS builds on the BMW M4 Coupe’s dynamic and emotional use of forms. Yet its character as a high-performance special model, in which every detail has been developed to fulfil its purpose as a successful track machine, also comes immediately to the fore. The manually adjustable front splitter and rear wing – both in exposed carbon – ensure perfect aerodynamic balance and allow the BMW Concept M4 GTS to be adapted for both individual race tracks and for use on the road. Another example of the engineers’ rigorous adherence to lightweight design is the CFRP (carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic) bonnet, which lowers the car’s weight and centre of gravity further still. A wide front air intake optimises airflow and minimises front axle lift.

The dynamic and exclusive presence of the BMW Concept M4 GTS is accentuated by the exterior paint shade Frozen Dark Grey Metallic, with the Acid Orange accent on the front splitter creating an effective contrast. The lightweight, forged and polished light-alloy wheels in 666 M styling also feature an Acid Orange accent. The 9.5 J x 19 (front) and 10.5 J x 20 (rear) wheels are fitted with Michelin Sport Cup 2 tyres (265/35 R19 at the front, 285/30 R20 at the rear). The mixed-size tyres provide the ideal conduit for the stand-out dynamic attributes of the BMW Concept M4 GTS.

Water injection: power up, full-load fuel consumption down.
The engine powering the BMW Concept M4 GTS is equipped with the same innovative water injection system that has endowed the BMW M4 MotoGP Safety Car with a noticeable increase in output and torque.

The water injection system introduced by BMW M Division sees the engineers using the physical effect of water when vaporising to draw the required energy from the ambient medium. The water is injected into the plenums of the intake manifold as a fine spray. When the water vaporises, the intake air cools significantly. As a result, the final compression temperature in the combustion chamber – and therefore the engine’s tendency to “knock” – is reduced, enabling the turbocharged engine to use higher boost pressure and earlier injection timing.

This technology ensures an increase in output and torque, while at the same time reducing the thermal stress on performance-relevant components. All of which also enhances the stability and durability of the turbocharged engine. The BMW Concept M4 GTS therefore brings high-performance technology directly from the race track to the road.

The strong performance potential of the turbocharged six-cylinder in-line engine already demands an exceptionally sophisticated thermal management system for the engine and ancillary units. To ensure optimal operating temperatures in all situations, the M Division engineers have developed a highly innovative and effective cooling system. It comprises a main radiator plus additional radiators for the high- and low-temperature circuits, transmission and turbocharger in order to keep temperatures stable. The turbochargers are cooled by means of an indirect intercooler, assisted by an additional electric water pump.

OLED rear lights radiate ultra-high precision.
The BMW Concept M4 GTS is fitted with innovative rear lights featuring OLED technology. OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes) are a new type of light source producing full-surface and homogenous illumination – in contrast to LEDs, which emit light to a single point. Their low installation height of just 1.4 millimetres and the ability to actuate individual light modules separately create fresh design scope in lighting concepts. OLED technology enables extra flexibility and forges an unmistakable appearance that signals exceptional precision.

OLED technology heralds a new era in light design and lighting concepts, and opens up new possibilities when it comes to a characteristic and distinctive light signature for BMW models – both for their daytime driving lights and during the hours of darkness.

Hot on the heels of the latest BMW M3 Saloon and M4 Coupé, both of which were revealed at Detroit at the start of the year, details of the M4 Convertible are now released, the fifth-generation high-performance open-top car of its kind from the company’s M division.          

Powered by the same 431hp in-line six-cylinder engine as the M3 Saloon and M4 Coupé, the Convertible offers the option of a six-speed manual or seven-speed M Double Clutch transmission. The M4 Convertible exhibits all the hallmarks of a car created by BMW’s high-performance specialists – lightweight engineering, carefully honed aerodynamics, advanced race-derived chassis tuning and electronic driver assistance technologies and a sporty elegant profile, open or closed.

The heart of the M4 Convertible: a high-performance TwinPower Turbo engine
The BMW M4 Convertible derives its firepower from a high-revving six-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine which benefits from technologies developed on the race track. This 2,979cc in-line six-cylinder powerhouse, developed by BMW M, features two mono-scroll turbochargers, high-precision direct injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft control. This technical prowess allows the M4 Convertible to switch seamlessly from an undemanding everyday road car to one which feels totally at home on the race track.    

Huge reserves of torque peaking at 550Nm are available from just 1,850rpm – exactly the point at which maximum power of 431hp is attained. This is then maintained until 7,300rpm. Maximum engine revolutions are 7,600rpm. All of this means the M4 Convertible delivers a seemingly never-ending surge from little more than engine tickover to the electronically restricted top speed of 155mph. The zero to 62mph sprint is achieved in 4.6 seconds with the six-speed manual gearbox, or 4.4 seconds with the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission.

Such impressive performance calls for advanced, race-derived technologies, including special cooling systems. An indirect intercooler maximises charge pressure and engine output, while the main radiator is supplemented by other coolers located in the sides of the engine bay for the high and low-temperature water circuits as well as for the engine and transmission oil (with the M DCT gearbox). An additional electric coolant pump helps to cool the turbocharger bearing mounts when the car comes to rest.    

The lightweight magnesium sump has a special cover to minimise the movement of oil during high-G cornering, and an additional pump and sophisticated oil return system maintain stable oil circulation under hard acceleration and braking.

The iconic quad exhaust system contains electronically controlled flaps which minimise back-pressure and ensure that the M4 Convertible has an unmistakable BMW M sound.

The £2,645 optional seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission effectively combines two gearboxes, each with its own clutch. Shifts are therefore completed with no interference to the power delivery, enhancing both performance and efficiency. Gear shifting can be fully automatic or via the selector lever or steering column-mounted paddles. Drivelogic allows the driver to choose more sporting or more comfort-oriented shifting programmes while in automatic mode, and the seven-speed M DCT transmission also incorporates Launch Control to ensure the fastest-possible acceleration from standstill.

Lightweight engineering aids performance, agility and efficiency
BMW’s M cars do not achieve their exceptional performance simply through brute power. Advanced weight-saving technologies and carefully honed aerodynamics also play a major part while assisting agility and efficiency.

The M4 Convertible is around 60kg lighter than the outgoing M3 Convertible, despite being more lavishly equipped. A low kerb weight of 1,750kg, has been achieved through extensive use of aluminium for the bonnet, front wings and many of the chassis components, while carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) is used for the propeller shaft and strut brace in the engine compartment. CFRP is light but extremely strong: the single-piece propeller shaft is 40 percent lighter than the steel one in the M3 Convertible, reducing rotating masses and improving powertrain response. The engine compartment strut brace weighs just 1.5kg, yet aids more superior body control than with an aluminium strut.

The M4 Convertible has a number of special aerodynamic measures to achieve the downforce required of a high-performance car while adding to the comfort of its four occupants and overall efficiency during everyday road use. The dynamically shaped front apron, a smooth underbody and special airflow channelling through the front end all help to counter lift at speed. Meanwhile, the Aero Curtains and M side gills with integral Air Breathers behind the front wheels are instrumental in reducing drag. Even the twin-stalk door mirrors help the M4 Convertible cut through the air better.

As a result, the M4 Convertible’s high performance is balanced by its low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. In manual form the new model is capable of 31mpg with CO2 emissions of 213g/km, while with the quick-shifting seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission these improve to 32.5mpg and 203g/km CO2.

Like all BMWs, the M4 Convertible is equipped with a suite of EfficientDynamics fuel-saving technologies, including Auto Start-Stop, Optimum Shift Indicator (in manual mode only with the M DCT transmission), Brake Energy Regeneration, on-demand operation of ancillary units, a map-controlled oil pump and a final drive with optimised warm-up behaviour. 

Sports-tuned chassis and electronic driver assistance systems
The race-derived know-how of BMW’s M division also comes to the fore in the tuning of the chassis and its electronic driver assistance features. The result is a car which feels equally at home on road and track.

It begins with the M-specific set-up of the double-joint spring strut suspension at the front and the aluminium five-link axle at the rear. A variable electro-mechanical rack and pinion steering system delivers the seemingly impossible combination of maximum steering precision, response, assistance and fuel efficiency. The integrated M Servotronic system moderates the degree of assistance according to speed, and the driver is able to select COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ modes at the touch of a button for even greater personalisation. The M4 Convertible is fitted as standard with BMW M Compound brakes for maximum stopping power, fade resistance and low weight.

The mechanical elements of the chassis are supported by advanced driver assistance systems tuned specifically for the M4 Convertible. A standard feature is the Active M Differential to enhance traction and directional stability, particularly when accelerating hard out of corners. An electronically controlled multi-plate limited slip differential linked to the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system assesses accelerator position, wheel rotational speed and car yaw rate to decide how much rear axle lock, up to 100 percent, to introduce.

The DSC system includes anti-lock brakes (ABS) and M Dynamic Mode. Other standard stability support features include Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Brake drying and Hill-start Assistant. In the UK the M4 Convertible will also be fitted as standard with Adaptive M suspension with COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ modes.

An added sense of style with greater space and refinement
The dynamic lines of the M4 Convertible instantly mark it out as the high-performance flagship of the new BMW 4 Series Convertible range, while occupants are now treated to greater interior and luggage space and superior refinement.

The wheelbase and width have been increased compared with the M3 Convertible, without disturbing the balanced proportions of a long bonnet, short overhangs and set-back glasshouse – all BMW essentials. Stand-out M design touches include a powerdome in the bonnet, a sculpted front apron with three air intakes and a black double-slat kidney grille. Standard 19-inch M double-spoke light alloy wheels in the UK, flared front and rear wheel arches, M side gills and Air Breathers behind the front wheels and polished slanting quad exhaust tailpipes, make the BMW M4 Convertible a striking M car.

The three-part metal roof now provides significantly improved noise insulation – up to 2dB quieter – as a result of a new headlining which also contributes towards higher levels of winter warmth and comfort. The M4 Convertible switches from a stylish coupé, unencumbered by B-pillars, to an elegant convertible free of obstructive roll-over protection or aerials in 20 seconds. Making all-weather top-down driving a greater pleasure than ever, a wider wind deflector and new three-stage neck-warming Air Collar in the front seats are also available.

The roll-over hoops for the two rear seats are now neatly hidden behind the headrests. In the event of a sudden shower the roof can be raised at speeds of up to 8mph. An innovative new Loading-aid raises the folded roof when it is stowed in the boot to give owners access to their belongings in just 6 seconds. The luggage capacity has also increased to 370litres when the roof is closed and 220litres when it is stowed.

The interior features a number of M division highlights, led by electrically-adjustable, heated and contoured leather M seats with recessed head restraints and integrated seatbelt. The front head restraints incorporate an illuminated BMW M logo. Interior highlights also include an M steering wheel, chrome trim and three-colour M stitching. The individual rear seats offer a combination of comfort and lateral support befitting the car-for-all-conditions character of the M4 Convertible.

The BMW M4 Convertible in the UK
The BMW M4 Convertible will be offered with an extensive specification in the UK. Standard equipment, in addition to Adaptive M suspension and 19-inch M light alloy wheels, will include the BMW Professional media package, upgraded Bluetooth and USB, front and rear Park Distance Control, Folding exterior mirrors and heated front seats. The BMW M4 Convertible goes on sale in the UK on 6 September 2014, priced at £60,745 OTR.

The launch of the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé heralds the arrival of the fifth-generation of the iconic high-performance sports car from BMW M. For the first time the Coupé and Saloon models receive individual model names, in deference to the different model series that provide their basis.

Another first is the adoption of a turbocharged engine for this BMW M model: the high-revving, 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology has been specifically developed for this purpose, and produces a maximum output of 431hp. Its peak torque of 550Nm is available across a very wide rev range starting at just 1,850rpm, and exceeds the figure recorded by the outgoing BMW M3 by roughly 40 per cent. In spite of this, the new engine also achieves a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of around 25 per cent.

To maximise dynamic ability and ensure excellent efficiency, a weight loss of over 80kgs has been achieved compared to a comparably equipped predecessor model. Specific weight-saving measures include the increased use of lightweight materials: both models now feature a carbon-fibre reinforced plastic roof.

BMW M engineers have paid particular attention to the car’s aerodynamic performance, and incorporated the latest Active M Differential amongst numerous other technical highlights. During the development process the engineers worked closely with BMW Motorsport’s professional racing drivers, with extensive testing and set-up work carried out on the Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit.

The balance of the overall concept: high power, low weight, driving pleasure.
The new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé are formed from a host of finely blended elements, all working in perfect harmony to deliver outstanding performance, precision and agility on road and track.

With the new BMW M3 Saloon and M4 Coupé, the engineers sought to optimally channel the air around the car in the quest for ultimate performance, while also ensuring the engine, powertrain and brakes receive the requisite cooling. Even when operating under heavy loads on the racing circuit. The aggressively styled front apron, smooth under-body and the clearly defined lip spoiler at the rear of the M3 Saloon (or integrated bootlid spoiler at the rear of the BMW M4 Coupé) reduce lift by an equal amount at the front and rear axle, to the benefit of handling.

Albert Biermann, Head of Development at BMW M GmbH, said: “The way in which we channel the inflowing air through the engine oil cooler creates a venturi efect, which reduces front axle lift and, in so doing, improves the steering.”

The Aero Curtain and M side gills, the latter with integrated Air Breathers minimise turbulence in the front wheel arches. These elements, together with the aerodynamically optimised side mirrors in familiar M twin-stalk style, are not only distinctive design features, they also help to reduce drag.

The new six-cylinder in-line engine: high-revving, turbocharged unit combines the best of both worlds.
The new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé mark a return to the classic six-cylinder in-line engine configuration, as used on the second and third-generatios of this iconic sports car.

The new engine sees a slight power upgrade over the previous V8 to 431hp, now delivered between 5,500 and 7,300rpm, with maximum revolutions set at an unusually high figure for a turbocharged engine: 7,600rpm. Peak torque has been increased by roughly 40 per cent to 550Nm, and is maintained over a very wide rev range (1,850–5,500rpm). The standard sprint from 0-62mph takes both cars just 4.3 seconds with manual transmission, or just 4.1 seconds with the optional M DCT, while the top speed is 155mph (electronically limited). The new powerplant also boasts excellent fuel economy: the combined consumption in the EU cycle is as high as 34mpg and CO2 emissions are as low as 194g/km, an improvement of more than 25 per cent over the previous model’s figures. Regulated pollutant emissions are EU6-compliant.

The M Twin Power Turbo technology comprises two fast-responding mono- scroll turbochargers, High-precision direct injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS continuously variable camshaft timing. VALVETRONIC and Double-VANOS work in tandem to seamlessly control intake valve lift. The result is a smooth and efficient power delivery, with very sharp response and reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

The six-cylinder engine features a closed-deck crankcase design, which is very rigid and allows cylinder pressures to be increased for improved power output. And instead of liners, the cylinder bores feature a twin-wire arc- sprayed coating, which results in a significant reduction in engine weight.

A further technical highlight is the forged, torsionally rigid crankshaft which, as well as providing increased torque-carrying capacity, is also lighter in weight. This significantly reduces rotating masses, resulting in improved throttle response and acceleration.

A sporting engine sound, in keeping with BMW M tradition, is ensured thanks to the lofty rev range of the new engine and an innovative flap arrangement in the twin-pipe exhaust system. The electrically-controlled flaps just before the rear silencer minimise exhaust backpressure and produce a sound that is striking and unmistakable over the entire engine speed range, as well as giving precise feedback on engine load.

The different selectable drive modes, programmable with the MDrive Manager and activated via the iconic steering wheel ‘M’ buttons, offer drivers a choice of preconfigured, perfectly balanced vehicle set-ups which also feature different engine sound profiles.

Track-ready engine oil supply system for outstanding performance
On the track, the exceptional driving dynamics of the BMW M3 Saloon and BMW M4 Coupé place extra demands on the engine oil supply system, the design of which reflects the extensive motorsport experience of BMW M. The low-weight magnesium oil sump, for example, features a special cover to limit movement of the oil under the effects of strong lateral acceleration. Under extreme longitudinal acceleration and deceleration, an oil extraction pump and sophisticated oil return system situated close to the turbocharger also help to maintain stable oil circulation. Oil is therefore supplied continuously to all engine components in all driving situations – whether in everyday motoring or during hard driving on the track.

Sophisticated cooling concept for maximum performance
The exceptional performance potential of the BMW M3 Saloon and BMW M4 Coupé places exacting demands on temperature management, in not only the engine but also the peripheral assemblies. In order to ensure optimum operating temperatures across all types of usage, BMW M engineers have developed an extremely effective cooling system.

For example, alongside the two sophisticated turbocharger units, the air intake system of the six-cylinder engine also includes an indirect intercooler, maximising charge pressure and engine output. Moreover, as well as a main radiator, the cooling system also comprises a water cooler repositioned to the side for the high and low temperature water circuits, and the engine and transmission oil (if the M Double Clutch Transmission is specified). An additional electric coolant pump cools the turbocharger bearing mounts when the car is stationary.

Six-speed manual gearbox with new throttle blipping function:
The standard transmission specified is a six-speed manual gearbox with a robust double-plate clutch. This unit is considerably more compact than its predecessor and also 12kgs lighter. To increase shift comfort, the manual gearbox uses innovative new carbon friction linings in its synchroniser rings. The gearbox blips the throttle on downshifts - previously a feature reserved for the M Double Clutch Transmission - improving the smoothness of the driving experience and helping to enhance stability.

Seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic and Launch Control
The optional transmission for the new BMW M3 Saloon and M4 Coupé is the third-generation M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT). As well as changing gear automatically, in manual mode it enables ultra-fast gear changes with no interruption in the flow of power. The integrated Launch Control function ensures optimum sprinting performance off the line, producing acceleration figures that would be simply unattainable with the manual gearbox. In addition, the system allows for a range of extra features, including Stability Clutch Control, which opens the clutch when the car is understeering to bring it back into line, and also the selectable Drivelogic modes that give the BMW M3 and BMW M4 more comfortable, more economy-focused or even sportier characteristics depending on driver choice. The additional seventh gear over the manual gearbox allows longer gear ratios – and delivers the efficiency gains you would expect as a result.

Taking advantage of the extremely light yet impressively durable properties of CFRP (carbon-fibre reinforced plastic), the engineers have been able to construct the driveshaft from this material.

“The impressive stiffness and low weight of the CFRP tubing allow the driveshaft to be constructed as a single-piece unit with no centre bearing. As well as a weight-saving of 40 per cent over its predecessor, we have achieved a reduction in rotating masses and therefore improved drivetrain dynamics.” explains Albert Biermann.

The rear-wheel drive chassis with Active M Differential
The Active M Differential makes a considerable contribution to the superb dynamics of the new BMW M3 Saloon and BMW M4 Coupé. With further weight-savings thanks to hollow, and hence lighter, output shafts, the Active M Differential uses an electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip differential to optimise traction and directional stability. Working precisely and rapidly, the control unit links up with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system and also takes into account the position of the accelerator pedal, the rotational speed of the wheels and the car’s yaw rate.

Every driving situation is therefore precisely analysed and an impending loss of traction on one side of the car identified at an early stage. The degree of differential lock – which may be anywhere between 0 and 100 per cent – is adjusted as required within a fraction of a second, enabling wheel spin to be prevented on slippery surfaces, in instances where the right and left rear wheel have widely differing friction coefficients or in tight bends and when changing direction with particular vigour.

The M Dynamic Mode – a sub-function of the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system – allows enthusiastic drivers to probe the limits of the new cars while retaining an electronic safety net at all times. The system tolerates greater wheel slip and therefore easy drifting, although DSC will still step in if the car ventures over the limits – unless it is switched off completely.

Aluminium suspension elements ensure sharper dynamics
The core expertise of BMW M resides in developing cars that offer superb driving dynamics and real driver satisfaction, yet not at the expense of everyday usability. In order to achieve these aims with the significantly increased performance capability of the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé, the suspension of the outgoing BMW M3 has been redesigned with painstaking attention to detail.

In the front suspension the use of lightweight aluminium construction for components such as control arms, wheel carriers and axle subframes saves 5kgs over a conventional steel design. Play-free ball joints and elastomer bearings developed specially for the cars ensure an optimum and direct transfer of forces both laterally and longitudinally, while an aluminium stiffening plate, CFRP engine strut brace and additional bolted joints between the axle subframe and the body structure all help to increase the rigidity of the front end.

Also lighter is the new five-link rear axle. All the control arms and wheel carriers are manufactured using forged aluminium, which reduces the unsprung masses of the wheel-locating components by around 3kgs compared with the previous model generation. The rigid connection between the rear axle subframe and the body – without the use of elastic rubber elements – is borrowed from motorsport and serves to further improve wheel location and therefore directional stability.

Tyre development was critical from the outset, and both cars feature 19-inch wheels as standard for the UK market, in either Ferric Grey or optionally Jet Black. These specially developed forged wheels make a significant contribution to the reduction in the cars’ unsprung masses. BMW M engineers have taken great care to ensure all the components between the steering wheel and tyres work together harmoniously and therefore provide maximum driving precision and lateral stability, while retaining good ride comfort.

Electric Power Steering with three settings
The electromechanical steering system in the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé represents a new development from BMW M. The integrated M Servotronic function electronically adjusts the level of steering assistance according to the car’s speed. The system offers the driver three settings as standard, which can be selected at the touch of a button: COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ modes allow the level of steering assistance to be adapted to suit any given situation and the driver’s personal tastes.

The Adaptive M suspension, fitted as standard for the UK market, also provides COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ modes, enabling the driver to choose between a more comfortable damper setting for urban driving, for example, or a stiffer set-up for dynamic driving on country roads. A third option minimises body movements and maximises dynamic performance for use on the track.

The standard new BMW M Compound brakes boast impressive feel, outstanding stopping power and a high resistance to fade. Far lighter than conventional equivalents, they contribute to a substantial reduction in unsprung masses. Even lighter BMW M Carbon ceramic brakes can be specified as an option - gold callipers denote their fitment.

Lightweight engineering: shedding weight in all the right places.
Intelligent lightweight design was a top priority in the development of the BMW M3 Saloon and BMW M4 Coupé. The goal was to minimise kerb weight in order to give both models outstanding driving dynamics and exemplary efficiency. These measures have delivered impressive results, with the BMW M4 Coupé (manual transmission) weighing 1,497kgs, around 80kgs lighter than a comparably equipped predecessor model – with all the benefits that reduction brings.

On the outgoing models, the CFRP roof was confined to the Coupé version. Now, for the first time, the four-door BMW M3 Saloon gets this striking design and functional feature as standard. The CFRP roof brings weight-savings of 5kgs in the case of the BMW M3 Saloon and more than 6kgs in the case of the BMW M4 Coupé. It also lowers the vehicle’s centre of gravity, which has a positive impact on driving dynamics.

Aluminium is used for the front wings and the bonnet, as opposed to conventional steel, and makes an important contribution to the low overall weight, while at the same time improving axle load distribution.

On the M4 Coupé, the shape of the new bootlid has been optimised for aerodynamic performance, while the use of a carbon-fibre and plastic compound saves additional weight.

The new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé also feature a CFRP driveshaft. The high rigidity and low weight of the CFRP tube mean that the driveshaft can be produced as a single-piece component, without a centre bearing. This achieves weight-savings of 40 per cent over the previous model and a reduction in rotating masses, which in turn results in more dynamic powertrain response.

A further use of CFRP can be found in the engine compartment for the engine strut brace. Weighing only 1.5kgs it offers superior rigidity to a comparable aluminium component, and at the same time plays a key part in the excellent steering response and precision of both vehicles. The use of carbon-fibre in these models is a reminder that BMW is a global leader in high-strength, lightweight CFRP construction, and that it was BMW who brought out the first mass-production vehicle with a body consisting entirely of this material – the innovative BMW i3.

Design: striking use of forms underlines standout performance capability.
“The superior performance of the BMW M3 Saloon and BMW M4 Coupé should be obvious at first glance,” explains Karim Habib, Head of Design at BMW Automobiles. “Indeed, the exterior design has a visual impact that elevates the BMW M design language to a new level of expression, highlighted by a purposeful character, emotional appeal and dynamic verve.”

Viewed from the front, the BMW M3 Saloon and BMW M4 Coupé have a powerfully expressive ‘face’, with a modern take on the twin headlight arrangement and a distinctive double-slat kidney grille with M designation. The aggressive front apron, with its trio of large intakes, supplies cooling air to the engine and brakes. Among the other hallmark BMW M design features is the characteristic powerdome on the bonnet, which hints at the potential of the muscular M TwinPower Turbo engine and creates space for the intercooler. The twin-stalk side mirrors are another classic BMW M design feature.

The sides of both cars clearly show the hallmark BMW proportions of a long bonnet, long wheelbase, set back glasshouse and short front overhang, further emphasised by familiar M design elements. The new M side gills perform both a stylistic and a functional role: integrated into them are Air Breathers, which team up with the Aero Curtains in the front apron to help optimise the airflow around the wheel arches and therefore improve aerodynamics.

The dark colour of the CFRP roof (with its contoured roofline) gives both models a lower-slung and more compact appearance, as the eye perceives the roof pillars – painted in body colour – to be the uppermost point of the car. A flowing roofline then gains in momentum once again as it heads rearwards, increasing aerodynamic downforce and giving the rear a more muscular look at the same time.

At the rear, there are greater differences in the two models. The BMW M3 Saloon is fitted with a lip spoiler to reduce lift, while the tailgate of the BMW M4 Coupé features an integrated rear spoiler and is made from a carbon-fibre compound.

Both models feature prominently flared rear wheel arches, which, in combination with the wide track, give the cars a very purposeful stance. The high-gloss pair of twin exhaust tailpipes are framed by the sculptural rear apron with its integrated diffuser.

Interior design: flawless ergonomics in a sporting ambience.
Inside, drivers will be greeted by the interior architecture prioritising unimpeachable ergonomics and a clear driver focus. However, the emphasis has naturally been put on an even more sporting ambience. There are a host of traditional BMW M equipment details, including M door sill finishers, M gearshift lever, M design circular instruments with white graphics, M leather steering wheel (with M logo, chrome trim and iconic triple-colour contrast stitching) and metallic shift paddles (if the M DCT gearbox is specified). The BMW Individual headlining is finished in Anthracite.

The bespoke front seats take inspiration from the bucket seats fitted in racing cars, and feature a full-size single-piece back panel. This means the construction of the seats is very flat, while the high, width-adjustable side bolsters and low-set seat surface allow an ideal seating position and provide excellent support. Despite this, these BMW M seats also include electric adjustment and heating as standard. On the seat surface, the stitching, upholstery segmentation and perforation lend the seats a slim-fitting feel, whilst the BMW M logo on the seat is illuminated for the first time.

Like the front seats, the distinctively contoured backrests of the rear seats also offer exceptional lateral support: they are made from a lightweight composite material and can be folded in a 60:40 split. This gives the BMW M3 and BMW M4 a level of everyday usability that is well beyond the norm for high-performance sports cars.

Equipment: extensive standard equipment joined by a host of options that enhance dynamics and comfort.
The new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M4 Coupé possess an extensive list of standard equipment, which reflects their performance-oriented character but also their excellent everyday usability. The UK specification has been enhanced substantially from the predecessor model with a number of additions; these include technical features such as Adaptive M suspension, 19-inch M light alloy wheels and front and rear PDC; comfort items such as the heated and electric BMW M seats and exterior-folding mirrors; aesthetic features such as High-gloss Shadowline exterior trim and finally the full BMW Professional Media package with upgraded Bluetooth system.

In addition, customers can choose from a broad range of optional equipment to give the cars either an additional sporting edge, or boost comfort levels further still. For those buyers wishing to personalise their cars yet further, the wide-reaching spectrum of BMW Individual – including BMW Individual paint finishes, BMW Individual Merino leather and BMW Individual interior trim elements – will be available later in 2014.

Further options for comprehensive driver information
For track drivers BMW M has developed a free BMW M Laptimer app, which allows owners to analyse their personal driving style. Once their smartphone is hooked up to the car – via USB cable or the car’s snap-in adapter – customers can operate the BMW M Laptimer app easily using the iDrive Touch Controller. The app then records speed, longitudinal and lateral acceleration, engine revs, the gear engaged, steering angle, accelerator position and fuel consumption. The data can subsequently be analysed via graphic displays on the customer’s smartphone, including the driver’s reactions. Another feature allows two recordings on the same circuit to be compared corner-by-corner: the readings can be either the driver’s own or data shared via email.

Naturally, the BMW M3 Saloon and BMW M4 Coupé are also available with the wide variety of driver assistance systems and mobility services introduced under the BMW ConnectedDrive banner, some of which will already be familiar from the BMW 3 Series and BMW 4 Series. Among the highlights are the latest-generation of the Professional Navigation system, offering extra capability, sharper graphics and 3D elements for the map display; Driving Assistant Plus, which warns the driver of a looming collision with a pedestrian; Adaptive full LED headlights with an intelligent anti-dazzle High-beam Assistant and a further developed version of Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function.

The optional M Head-up Display comes with additional, M-specific functions such as a gear display, rev counter and Optimum Shift Indicator.

Production: return to the birthplace of the BMW M3.
It was at the Preußenstraße headquarters of BMW Motorsport GmbH in Munich, 28 years ago, that the company’s then managing director Paul Rosche developed the idea for the BMW M3. Production began just a few months later at the original BMW plant next door. And now, almost 23 years later, production is returning to BMW Plant Munich with the build of the new BMW M4 Coupé. The BMW M3 Saloon will continue to be built at BMW Plant Regensburg where 222,293 units of the second, third and fourth-generations of the BMW M3 combined have been produced since 1992.

The first-generation.
In spring 1985, the BMW Motorsport department began development of a new machine to compete in touring car racing. The road-going version required for homologation – 5,000 examples of which had to be built to satisfy the sporting regulations – was conceived from the outset as a race-ready Group A machine. The model made its debut in the summer of 1986. Its naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine developed 195hp (or 200hp without catalytic converter) from a 2.3-litre engine; accelerated from 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds (6.7 seconds) and had a top speed of 143mph (146mph).

The first-generation BMW M3 exceeded all sales expectations: including the Convertible variant, the various evolution stages of the car and the special-edition models, BMW sold a total of 17,970 M3s worldwide by the time production ceased in 1991.

The second-generation.
The successor to the original M3 was not designed as the basis for a racing car. However, it was developed from the outset in three body variants: the two-door Coupé, which made its debut in 1992, was followed onto the market in 1994 by a Convertible and – for the first time – a four-door Saloon. A six-cylinder 3.0-litre engine developing 286hp powered all three models to 62mph from a standstill in less than six seconds; top speed was electronically limited to 155mph. A low-run M3 GT variant was added to the range in 1994, with 295hp, and then in 1995 the displacement was increased to 3.2-litres, with engine output rising to 321hp.

In 1997 the BMW M3 became the world’s first volume-produced car to be available with a Sequential M Gearbox (SMG). This transmission was based on the conventional gearbox for the M3, but with a clutch that was activated electro-hydraulically. 71,242 units of the Coupé, Convertible and Saloon combined were produced at Plant Regensburg.

The third-generation.
The third-generation of the BMW M3 arrived in 2000, available in Coupé or Convertible form only. Its six-cylinder in-line engine still displaced 3.2-litres, but now developed 343hp, and that meant the M3 could accelerate from 0 to 62mph in just 5.2 seconds – or 5.5 seconds for the Convertible model. New also was a variable differential lock at the rear axle, allowing anywhere between 0 and 100 per cent lock. Added to which, the second-generation of the Sequential M Gearbox (SMG II) now also allowed the driver to change gear using paddles on the steering wheel.

The pinnacle of this generation was the BMW M3 CSL, introduced in 2003. The suffix stood for “Coupé Sport Lightweight”, justified by elements such as a carbon-fibre roof, centre console and door panels, a lighter rear window and the omission of numerous comfort-oriented features. With a kerb weight of just 1,385kgs, it weighed 110kgs below the standard M3. All 1,383 units of the 360hp vehicle were sold within just a few months.

The fourth-generation.
In 2007 the fourth-generation BMW M3 was launched with an all-new V8 engine – the first time an M3 had appeared without the now classic six-cylinder powerplant. Built in Coupé, Saloon and Convertible form (the latter joined the range in 2008) the new 3,999cc engine developed 420hp and some 85 per cent of its maximum 400Nm of torque was available across a huge 6,500rpm rev range. Weight-saving gained increasing importance, and BMW M engineers responded with the Coupé in particular. As with the previous CSL model, the roof was now made from CFRP; the bonnet with its characteristic powerdome was made from aluminium, as were large sections of the newly developed lightweight chassis.

Highlights during the production run included the BMW M3 GTS, which contained a larger 4.4-litre V8 to produce a peak output of 450hp. The GTS featured specially developed chassis components and aerodynamic measures, plus a two-seat cockpit conceived for track use. Only available with Fire Orange paintwork, the GTS was aimed specifically at circuit driving as well as road use. Just 135 examples of this model were delivered to customers, with just 15 coming to the UK.
