With its agile handling, M-typical performance and compact dimensions, the BMW M2 embodies unadulterated driving pleasure in its ultimate expression. The BMW M2 lineup today expands with the introduction of the first BMW M2 with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 27.2 – 27.4 mpg; CO₂ emissions, combined: 235 – 233 g/km according to WLTP, CO₂ class: G)^*.

The M xDrive all-wheel drive system splits the power developed by the 480 hp six-cylinder in-line engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology between the front and rear axles intuitively adapting to the driving situation at hand. Also in play is the Active M Differential, which distributes drive variably between the rear wheels as required, maximising traction and delivering the driving dynamics typically associated with a rear-wheel drive model.

These enhanced traction levels increase the car’s agility, dynamism and directional stability resulting in improved acceleration – 0 – 62 mph in 3.7 seconds. The new BMW M2 with M xDrive therefore offers drivers the inimitable M feeling through all four seasons of the year, in almost any road conditions and in all weathers – without any trade-off in performance. The car showcases its optimised traction (which is also the product of specially developed chassis tuning) with sublime assurance in fluctuating grip conditions such as ice and snow as well as on the track.

The UK market launch of the new BMW M2 with M xDrive will commence in late summer 2026, with pricing starting from £74,255 OTR.

Superior traction and further enhanced dynamics thanks to M xDrive and Active M Differential.
The M xDrive all-wheel-drive system employs an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the transfer case to ensure fully variable and super-smooth division of the engine’s power between the front and rear wheels of the new BMW M2 with M xDrive. The system’s rear-wheel bias fits the familiar M blueprint. In normal driving, power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels. Only when they cannot feed any more power to the road does the all-wheel-drive system bring the front wheels into play.

M xDrive links up with the Active M Differential including M-specific traction control and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control). Together, they adapt the car’s responses precisely to the situation in order to deliver a driving experience of unsurpassed dynamism with a noticeable increase in directional stability and traction.

The transfer case features a model-specific control unit and integrated wheel slip limitation. This allows it to compensate for any differences in rotational speed between the front and rear wheels. It can do this without having to involve the central DSC management, which makes the process extremely quick and further intensifies the M-typical sense of unshakable poise in highly dynamic driving situations.

The M xDrive system’s responses can be configured via the M Setup menu. This means the driver can adapt the characteristics and performance attributes of the all-wheel drive system to both the driving situation at hand and their personal preferences. One of the options the driver can select is 2WD mode with DSC deactivated, whereby torque is sent to the rear wheels only. This unlocks a driving experience of remarkable purity.

A development with roots in racing car design: pre-chamber combustion.
The 3.0-litre straight-six engine powering the new BMW M2 with M xDrive uses BMW M Ignite technology – a new pre-chamber combustion process patented by BMW. This innovation is an example of the successful transfer of technology from racing cars to production models and will be introduced into all straight-six engines from BMW M as of mid-2026. The pre-chamber combustion process significantly reduces fuel consumption under high loads. At the same time, this new engine technology helps to meet the requirements of the EU7 standard. As before, the engine in the BMW M2 with M xDrive offers the performance characteristics for which M models are renowned, such as instantaneous response and linear power development into the higher reaches of the rev range. And this spirited power delivery is accompanied by an emotionally stirring soundtrack. The lower fuel consumption under high loads made possible through BMW M Ignite technology will be particularly appreciated by customers who like to use their car on track days, allowing them to keep lapping for longer with the same amount of fuel.

The BMW M2 with M xDrive is fitted as standard with an M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, which ensures the engine’s power is harnessed to maximum dynamic effect. Standard-fit M light-alloy wheels (19-inch at the front axle, 20-inch at the rear) transfer the power onto the road surface. Track tyres can be specified as an option.

Optimum stopping power on road and track is provided by M Compound brakes with six-piston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston callipers at the rear.

The combination of the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and Active M Differential gives the new BMW M2 with M xDrive enables improved performance. Acceleration from 0 to 62 mph is possible in 3.7 seconds, 0.3 seconds faster than its sister model with pure rear-wheel drive. The BMW M2 with M xDrive reaches 124 mph from rest in 12.8 seconds. The sprint from 50 to 75 mph is covered in 3.7 seconds. The M2 with M xDrive has a limited top speed of 155 mph, rising to 177 mph if the optional M Driver’s Package is specified.

BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue available for the first time for a BMW M2.
The selection of exterior colours customers can choose from includes five metallic and three solid variants, plus six options from the BMW Individual range – including two frozen options. For example, the BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue special paint finish will be available for an M2 for the first time.

The BMW M2: a successful model, built in Mexico.
The BMW M2 Coupé (fuel consumption, combined: 27.7 – 29.1 mpg, CO₂ emissions, combined: 230 – 221 g/km according to WLTP, CO₂ class: G)^* was the best-selling high-performance model from BMW M GmbH in 2025. The new BMW M2 with M xDrive – like the other M2 models – will be built at BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí in Mexico. Production will commence in August 2026. The most important sales markets for the BMW M2 with M xDrive are the USA, Germany and China.

Munich. BMW M GmbH once again achieved outstanding sales growth in 2025. For no less than the 14th time in a row, the manufacturer of high-performance and performance vehicles reported record sales. And for the 7th time running, BMW M GmbH vehicles outsold their competitors by a considerable margin. A sales total of 213,457 vehicles surpassed the previous year’s excellent result (206,582 vehicles) by three per cent. Both the high-performance and performance models set new benchmarks. Keys to success in all markets are a state-of-the-art model range spanning many vehicle classes and an extensive portfolio of powertrain options. In 2025, nearly every tenth BMW sold was a BMW M model. This share of 9.8 per cent represents another milestone.

“Our 14th consecutive sales record validates our strategy. We will continue to offer performance and high-performance vehicles across the entire BMW model range. With fully electric, partly electric and all-ICE powertrains,” says Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH.

High-performance executive models drive growth.
The high-performance models from BMW M GmbH combine racetrack capabilities with unrestricted everyday usability. BMW M5 models became key growth drivers in 2025. The BMW M5 Sedan (energy consumption, weighted, combined: 17.6–17.2 kWh/100 km and 5.0–4.8 l/100 km (WLTP); CO₂ emissions, weighted, combined: 114–108 g/km (WLTP); CO₂ classes: with discharged battery G, weighted, combined C; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 10.7–10.5 l/100 km (WLTP))*^,1 and the BMW M5 Touring (energy consumption, weighted, combined: 18.1–17.6 kWh/100 km and 5.3–5.0 l/100 km (WLTP); CO₂ emissions, weighted, combined: 119–114 g/km (WLTP); CO₂ classes: with discharged battery G, weighted, combined D–C; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 10.9–10.7 l/100 km (WLTP))*^,1 saw enormous sales increases in their first full year on the markets, making them key contributors to the success of BMW M GmbH. Both vehicles offer a model-specific version of the M HYBRID system with a peak output of 535 kW/727 hp and a maximum system torque of 1,000 Nm. A high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor combine with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission to provide power to the M xDrive all-wheel drive system. The great appeal of the BMW M5 Touring was underscored by a “Golden Steering Wheel” award. This accolade is awarded by “Auto Bild” and “Bild am Sonntag”, both published by the German Axel Springer SE publishing house. The high-performance model achieved the highest points score of all finalists in the competition. Moreover, the distinguished jury rated the BMW M5 Touring ahead of the other class finalists in all driving disciplines, as well as in terms of efficiency and value for money.

The BMW M2 Coupé (fuel consumption, combined: 10.2–9.7 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 230–221 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)* was the best-selling high-performance vehicle of 2025. This model is also available with a manual transmission (fuel consumption, combined: 10.2–9.7 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 230–221 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)* and as an even more track-focused BMW M2 CS special model (fuel consumption, combined: 10.0 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 226 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)*. This delivers 390 kW/530 hp of power and recently set a new record time of 7:25.5 minutes on the Nürburgring.

Favourite among performance enthusiasts: the BMW M3 family.
The BMW M3 models are another family of high-performance best-sellers. The series impresses with perfectly tailored model variants and includes sedans with various output levels. The BMW M3 entry-level model is a particularly purist vehicle that comes with a six-speed manual transmission and 353 kW/480 hp of power (fuel consumption, combined: 10.1 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 230–229 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)*. Then there are the extremely popular Touring variants. 2025 also saw the launch of the BMW M3 CS Touring (fuel consumption, combined: 10.5 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 238 g/km (WLTP), CO₂ class: G)*, the most sporting exemplar with 405 kW/551 hp. The large number of BMW M3 family sales is a clear sign of the model series’ continued allure and represents a major contribution to the new record of almost 71,500 high-performance vehicles sold.

M Performance model is BMW M GmbH best-seller.
A particularly popular model and also the best-selling BMW M GmbH vehicle of 2025 was the BMW X3 M50 (fuel consumption, combined: 8.3 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined: 189 g/km (WLTP); CO₂ class: G)*. The top athlete in the premium mid-size SAV segment offers unique performance capabilities and a charismatic appearance. The M TwinPower Turbo engine, combined with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, delivers a maximum system output of 293 kW/398 hp. The power of the BMW X3 M50 is complemented by specific chassis technology and signature M design elements. With these attributes, it overtook the BMW i4 and its M60 Gran Coupé xDrive variant (energy consumption, combined (WLTP): 20.9 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions, combined (WLTP): 0 g/km, CO₂ class: A)*, which delivers an output of 442 kW/601 hp and a range of up to 551 km. The electric BMW i4 range-topper was the best-selling BMW M GmbH model from 2022 to 2024. 

In 2025, nearly every tenth BMW sold was a BMW M model, and the sales share of 9.8 per cent (9.4 per cent in the year prior) represents another new record. BMW M vehicles are especially popular in Switzerland, where nearly every fourth BMW ordered is a BMW M model. 

Exceptional sales total, top spots in the individual markets.
In the key markets, BMW M GmbH vehicles led the field, beating their competitors by a considerable margin. The models were particularly coveted in the U.S., the largest single market at over 72,000 units sold. But BMW M models also achieved top positions in markets such as Canada, Germany, Korea, South Africa and the United Kingdom. In China, BMW M GmbH achieved its largest absolute sales increase.

Focused model strategy to secure and expand top position.
The state-of-the-art model portfolio with its comprehensive range of ICE, plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles is at the heart of BMW M GmbH success. The development of models based on the Neue Klasse will provide further momentum. “Our strategy of being open towards new technologies once again paid off in 2025. BMW M GmbH stands for optimal performance, independently of the powertrain type. In all markets and across all vehicle classes. Motorsport remains a key pillar at BMW M GmbH.
The BMW M Motorsport race cars – the BMW M Hybrid V8, the BMW M4 GT3 EVO and the BMW M4 GT4 EVO – achieved a total of more than 180 victories in 2025. In works motorsport, the BMW M Hybrid V8 delivered a competitive performance in the first half of the FIA WEC season and the BMW M GmbH marks 14th consecutive record year. The best result of a season marked by highs and lows was the 1-2 finish at Road America. The BMW M4 GT3 EVO had a tremendous season. While the 1-2 victory at the Bathurst 12 Hour race in Australia was still won by the predecessor model, the EVO version seamlessly continued the series with top results. Triumphs at the Nürburgring 24 Hours (Germany), the Suzuka 1000 (Japan), the Indianapolis 8 Hour race and in the GTD Pro Class at the 6 Hours of the Glen and the Petit Le Mans (both U.S.) are among the highlights of a season that saw over 80 victories and 100 further podium finishes.

Teams driving the BMW M4 GT4 EVO achieved over 100 victories in the 2025 season. More than any other model, the BMW M4 GT4 is associated with customer racing. The victory in the SP10 at the Nürburgring 24 Hours was a particular high point. In the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) racing series, these vehicles came out on top in nine out of ten races. Moreover, the BMW M4 GT4 EVO triumphed in all classes at the GT4 America. The strong results of the GT4 teams helped BMW M Motorsport secure the SRO manufacturers’ title in the GT4 segment. The 2026 season will see the debut of the BMW M2 Racing as a new entry-level vehicle complementing the model portfolio for customer racing.

The new BMW M2 CS (fuel consumption combined: 10.0 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 226 g/km according to WLTP, CO2 class G)* sets a new benchmark on the legendary Nordschleife racetrack of the Nürburgring on 11 April 2025. Driven by BMW M development engineer Jörg Weidinger, it completed the 20.823-kilometre Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit in 7:25.5 minutes, beating the previous best time for compact cars by eight seconds. This record-setting BMW M2 CS not only raises the bar in the compact car class, but also further solidifies BMW M's reputation as a manufacturer of high-performance vehicles that excel both on the road and on the racetrack.

"The BMW M2 CS has achieved a significant milestone with its lap time of 7:25.5 minutes on the Nordschleife, showcasing the potential for combining performance, technology and exceptional driving dynamics into a single vehicle," stated Franciscus van Meel, the Managing Director of BMW M GmbH. 'We are proud that the M2 CS has once again set a new benchmark in the compact car class with this lap time.'

The continuation of a success story.

The previous best time for a BMW M2 model was set by Weidinger in April 2023, when he completed the course in 7:38.7 minutes. Two years later, he beat this time by 13 seconds, breaking the class record of 7:30 minutes for the first time. With the newly set best time of 7:25.5 minutes, the BMW M2 CS demonstrates its outstanding performance as well as the innovative power and engineering skills of BMW M GmbH.

Previous record runs on the Nordschleife by the BMW M4 CS, the BMW M4 CSL and the BMW M3 CS, all mid-range vehicles, achieved times under 7:30 minutes. The BMW M4 CSL also holds the best lap time ever recorded for a BMW Group production car. The official, notarised time is 7:18.137 minutes.

The "Green Hell" myth: The Nordschleife as a touchstone.

Often referred to as the 'Green Hell', the Nordschleife racetrack is considered one of the most demanding and challenging racetracks in the world. Measuring 20.832 kilometres in length with over 70 bends, it places the highest demands on drivers and vehicles alike. A fast lap on this track proves a vehicle's performance and handling capabilities. The Nordschleife lap times are the gold standard for measuring a vehicle's sporting performance and driving dynamics. Record runs are monitored by a neutral testing organisation, and the vehicles are checked to ensure they are in standard condition. This detailed inspection ensures that the record runs are carried out using production vehicles.

The Nürburgring - Home of BMW M.

BMW M and the Nürburgring have been in partnership for over a quarter of a century. From the BMW M Power Grandstand and BMW M Bridge to the BMW M Driving Experience and BMW M Test Centre, not to mention test drives on the Nordschleife for M vehicles en route to series production, the partnership between BMW M and the Nürburgring has been a resounding success for over 25 years. The Nordschleife serves as a test bench for every M model. The BMW M Test Centre is equipped with cutting-edge workshop facilities that allow BMW M to put vehicles through rigorous testing on the Nordschleife track even before they reach production, as well as to develop new models.

BMW M Motorsport racing cars have achieved numerous successes in various racing series, including 21 overall victories in the Nürburgring 24-hour race. The M Power showroom, which was redesigned in 2021, is another flagship of the cooperation. The Nürburgring's position as the home of BMW M has been further strengthened since then.

The new BMW M2 CS: More power, improved driving dynamics and consistent lightweight construction.

The new BMW M2 CS is a testament to BMW M GmbH's ongoing commitment to setting the standard in the compact high-performance sports car segment. Its combination of performance, lightweight construction and innovative technology makes the BMW M2 CS a vehicle that gets drivers and enthusiasts' hearts racing. The BMW M2 CS increases driving pleasure in the premium segment with its enhanced performance and outstanding agility. The advanced six-cylinder in-line engine featuring BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology delivers an impressive output of 390 kW/530 hp and a maximum torque of 650 Nm. Arriving as the latest special edition model from BMW M GmbH, it fuses thrilling performance, superior driving dynamics and a compelling design, whilst continuing a prestigious lineage that began with the legendary BMW 2002 Turbo over half a century ago.

With an increased engine power output, model-specific chassis tuning and a lightweight construction – comprising an array of carbon fibre reinforced plastic components (CFRP) – the second-generation BMW M2 CS (combined fuel consumption: 28.8 mpg; combined CO2 emissions: 226 g/km according to WLTP, CO2 class: G) is as proficient on the racetrack as it is on the road.

The six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology now delivers an impressive 530 hp – a 50 hp increase over the current-generation BMW M2 – and 650 Nm of torque. As a result, the new BMW M2 CS matches the performance capabilities of both the BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 27.7 mpg; CO2 emissions, combined: 230 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO2 class: G) and BMW M4 Coupé with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 28.0 mpg; CO2 emissions, combined: 229 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO2 class: G), powering from rest to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds.

A range of model-specific design elements give the BMW M2 CS an unmistakeable road presence. Most prominent is a ducktail spoiler which has been seamlessly integrated into the carbon fibre boot lid, alongside exclusive forged M light-alloy wheels finished in Golden Bronze, a unique stripped-back M kidney grille, a newly designed carbon rear diffuser and a matte black front splitter.

The new BMW M2 CS is priced from £86,800 RRP and will be produced in a limited run at BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí in Mexico. First customer deliveries are set to arrive in the UK in late summer 2025.

Noticeable weight reduction thanks to intelligent lightweight design.
The new BMW M2 CS weighs approximately 30 kilograms lighter than the standard model. This notable weight reduction has been achieved through intelligent lightweight construction – utilising an array of exterior and interior components made from CFRP – and standard-fit forged M light-alloy wheels. The result is the lightest BMW M2 of the current generation.

Six-cylinder in-line engine with significant increase in power output and torque.
The new BMW M2 CS is equipped with an upgraded version of the 3.0-litre, six-cylinder in-line petrol engine found in the current generation BMW M2. Especially noticeable in dynamic driving situations, the engine’s unmistakeable performance characteristics are sharper, and power delivery is linear, even into the higher rev ranges.

The engine’s power output rises to 530 hp – a 50 hp power increase over the current generation. Peak torque also sees a 50 Nm increase, with 650 Nm available across a broad rev range from 2,650 rpm and up to 5,730 rpm. The engine’s maximum power output is mobilised at 6,250 rpm before it reaches a 7,200-rpm red line. Performance is further enhanced through model-specific accelerator mapping across all drive modes selectable via the M Setup menu.

The engine’s M TwinPower Turbo technology comprises a pair of mono-scroll turbochargers, an indirect intercooler supplied by a low-temperature circuit, and an electronically controlled wastegate. The technology package also includes High Precision Injection, which operates with maximum pressure of 350 bar, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing.

Inspired by motorsport, the engine additionally features an extremely rigid crankcase with a sleeve-free, closed-deck construction, a forged crankshaft with lightweight design, cylinder bores with a wire-arc sprayed iron coating and a 3D-printed core for the cylinder head.

The M-specific cooling system ensures the powertrain components maintain an optimal operating temperature even under heavy loads, while the oil circuit is adequately equipped to handle highly dynamic driving situations. Additionally, a map-controlled oil pump ensures reliable oil supply even under extreme acceleration.

Power is delivered through an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic as standard. A Drivelogic button is integrated into the gear selector lever, making it possible to alter the transmission’s shift characteristics with a choice of three distinct levels. In addition to the gear selector lever, gearshift paddles on the steering wheel can be used for sequential interventions in the gear selection process at any time.

Exceptional performance: 0 to 62 mph in less than four seconds.
A specially designed engine mounting with increased spring rates establishes a highly rigid connection between the power unit and the vehicle's structure. This results in a sharper engine response and an extremely direct transmission of power to the drivetrain.

Thanks to its rapid power delivery, increased engine power output, and lightweight design, the new BMW M2 CS can accelerate from rest to 62 mph in just 3.8 seconds – 0.2 seconds faster than the current-generation BMW M2. 0 – 124 mph is dealt with in 11.7 seconds, while the mid-range sprint from 50 – 75 mph takes just 3.4 seconds. The top speed of the special edition – which is equipped with the M Driver’s Package as standard – is electronically limited to 188 mph.

This dynamic power delivery is complemented by a rich engine note, which is radiated via an M-specific exhaust system with electrically-controlled flaps and – in true M fashion – two pairs of tailpipes finished in matte black. For drivers seeking an even more aggressive soundscape, a lightweight titanium M Performance exhaust system – designed specifically for CS models – is available from the M Performance parts catalogue for the BMW M2 CS. The Active Sound Design inside the cabin also helps to convey the engine’s soundtrack authentically, with the intensity raised when SPORT or SPORT PLUS modes are selected.

Chassis and brakes optimised for increased performance.
The chassis technology and braking system for the BMW M2 CS are precisely tailored to the model’s improved performance characteristics and its unique weight distribution. Lowered by eight millimetres, the chassis benefits from model-specific adaptations, including bespoke tuning for the springs, dampers and chassis control systems. In addition, the settings for the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and M Dynamic Mode have been precisely optimised to meet the demands of driving on track. The M Servotronic steering, M Sport differential and integrated braking system also receive model-specific tuning.

An M Compound braking system with red brake callipers is fitted as standard. Driver’s seeking additional stopping power can choose the optional M Carbon ceramic brakes, which are also equipped with red brake callipers.

A bold exterior design featuring numerous carbon fibre components.
The exterior design of the BMW M2 CS comprises a variety of components made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and model-specific details. The front-end is characterised by a newly designed and stripped-back BMW M kidney grille with optimised air inlets, Shadow Line Adaptive LED headlights with high-beam assist and a matte black front splitter.

Most prominent at the rear is a large ducktail spoiler, which has been seamlessly integrated into the CFRP boot lid. The “M2 CS” badge finished in a red/black colourway sits beneath the pronounced spoiler. In addition to the M exterior mirror caps – familiar from the current-generation BMW M2 – the special edition gains a standard-fit M carbon roof and a unique rear diffuser, also made from CFRP.

BMW M2 CS customers can select from four exterior paint colours: Sapphire Black metallic, M Brooklyn Grey metallic, M Portimao Blue metallic and BMW Individual Velvet Blue metallic. Meanwhile, the CS-exclusive M light-alloy wheels in a double-spoke design are finished exclusively in matte Gold Bronze. They measure 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear (with the dimensions 275/35 ZR19 and 285/30 ZR20 respectively) and are fitted as standard with track tyres. Customers can specify sport tyres at no additional charge, while ultra-track tyres are available optionally and yield maximum performance on track.

Carbon and racing flair continues inside the cabin.
The interior of the BMW M2 CS combines a performance-oriented cockpit with advanced digital technology and further model-exclusive design elements. A standout feature is the centre console, which has been constructed entirely from CFRP. Similarly, the heated and weight-optimised bucket seats for the driver and front passenger are also made from carbon and can be electrically adjusted into a wide range of positions. Each has integral head restraints, an illuminated “CS” model badge and surfaces in full Merino leather.

Bringing authentic racing flair into the cockpit, a heated M Alcantara steering wheel in a three-spoke design is fitted as standard. It features a flat-bottomed rim, a red centre marker in the 12 o’clock position and two M buttons which provide quick access to individually configured vehicle setups. Elsewhere, “CS” lettering decorates the centre console, door sills and is illuminated within the door panels – a unique feature of the M2 CS. Rounding off the interior design is a standard-fit anthracite headliner.

M-specific setup buttons for a customisable driving experience.
The BMW M2 CS utilises the same cutting-edge operating concept for driving configuration as the BMW M2. At its heart is the Setup button on the centre console, which provides direct access to settings for the engine, chassis, steering and brakes. Offering further customisation capability, the special edition comes as standard with the M Drive Professional system with track-optimised functions such as the M Drift Analyser and M Laptimer. This system also includes a TRACK mode and ten-stage M Traction Control, where the wheel slip limiter intervention thresholds can be tailored to the driver’s individual preference.

BMW Curved Display with Operating System 8.5.
The new BMW M2 CS features a BMW Curved Display, comprising a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display with an M-specific interface based on BMW Operating System 8.5. The information display features M Shift Lights at its upper edge, while the status of the driving stability systems and traction control can be found in the lower portion of the screen. The home screen of the 14.9-inch control display provides access to widgets for vehicle setup, tyre pressure and temperature.

A compelling standard specification to enhance driving pleasure.
Further standard equipment for the BMW M2 CS includes three-zone automatic air conditioning, comfort access, a Harman Kardon Surround Sound System and BMW Live Cockpit Plus including BMW Maps navigation system. Alongside the head-up display, BMW Live Cockpit Professional also includes an augmented view mode on the control display. Smartphone integration enables both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™.

Providing partially automated driving and parking capabilities, the Driving Assistant, Parking Assistant, Front Collision Warning, Cruise Control with Braking Function, Speed Limit Info with blind-spot detection and Lane Departure Warning are also offered as standard. Meanwhile, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function is available optionally.

The new BMW M2 once again sets the benchmark for driving pleasure in a compact two-door form, featuring a straight-six engine, an optional six-speed manual gearbox, and rear-wheel drive. Combining compact dimensions, improved chassis technology, and state-of-the-art operating concept with the M Setup functionality, the new M2 is poised to write the next chapter in BMW M’s history of success in this segment.

The new BMW M2 _{(fuel consumption, combined: 28.8 – 29.4 mpg; CO2 emissions, combined: 223 – 218 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO2 class: G)} offers more power, new exterior design accents, a refreshed interior, and the introduction of BMW Operating System 8.5. With 20 hp added to its output, the high-revving six-cylinder in-line petrol engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology now tops out at 480 hp.

The new BMW M2 will be built alongside the new BMW 2 Series Coupé at BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí in Mexico with production starting in August 2024 and first UK customer deliveries in autumn 2024.  The new BMW M2 is priced from £63,360 RRP and available to order at BMW retailers across the UK from today.

Six-cylinder in-line engine with extra output and torque.

As well as raw power, the unique way in which the six-cylinder in-line engine delivers that power plays a key role in the performance experience offered by the new BMW M2. The upgraded version of the engine provides a stronger linear delivery of power, sustained into the higher reaches of the rev range - a hallmark feature of M models. Its maximum torque is on tap across a wide rev band between 2,650 and 6,130 rpm and the new BMW M2 with the optional six-speed manual gearbox, peak torque remains 550 Nm. When power is channelled via the standard eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, the figure rises to 600 Nm. The engine produces its increased maximum output of 480 hp at 6,250 rpm, with revs topping out at 7,200 rpm.

Further improvements have been made to the accelerator mapping and response in all drive modes selectable via the M Setup menu. As a result, the new BMW M2 offers noticeably more rapid reactions to the driver’s requests for acceleration – both when specified with the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and with the optional six-speed manual gearbox.

The ability of the new BMW M2 to offer improved power delivery is rooted in an exceptionally strong technological base - its 3.0-litre engine only slightly differs from the unit in the BMW M3/BMW M4 range.

Racing expertise delivers smile-inducing performance.

As well as its pair of mono-scroll turbochargers, an indirect intercooler and an electronically controlled wastegate, the M TwinPower Turbo technology of the straight-six engine also includes High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing. The engine has an array of details borrowed directly from racing car design including its lightning-fast response, appetite for revs and high-performance capability in track use. These details include an extremely rigid crankcase with a sleeve-free, closed-deck construction, a forged crankshaft with lightweight design, cylinder bores with a wire-arc sprayed iron coating and a 3D-printed core for the cylinder head.

The M-specific cooling system ensures the powertrain components maintain an optimal operating temperature even under heavy loads and the oil circuit is designed to handle extreme dynamic driving situations. A map-controlled oil pump ensures reliable oil supply even under extreme acceleration.

The engine sends its drive power through an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic as standard. The Drivelogic button integrated into the selector lever makes it possible to alter the transmission’s shift characteristics, with a choice of three clearly distinguishable settings. Both the selector lever in the latest M design and the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel enable sequential interventions in the gear selection process at any time.

Drivers keen to blend an intensely engaging performance experience with even more direct interaction with the powertrain can specify the six-speed manual gearbox as an option. This links up with the Gear Shift Assistant, which uses engagement speed control to ensure slip-free operation when downshifting under braking into corners.

Whichever transmission customers choose for their BMW M2, the increased engine output shaves 0.1 seconds off its 0 to 62 mph time: the new BMW M2 records a figure of 4.0 seconds with the standard transmission or 4.2 seconds if specified with the optional six-speed manual gearbox. The increase in power also makes its presence felt over the 0 to 124 mph sprint, delivering an improvement of 0.6 seconds in the case of the BMW M2 with eight-speed M Steptronic transmission (now 12.9 seconds), and lowering the time posted by cars with the optional manual gearbox by 0.6 seconds (to 13.7 seconds).

The top speed of the new BMW M2 is 155 mph but can be increased to 177 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package. The dynamic power delivery is backed by an emotionally rich engine note conjured by the M-specific exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps.

Visually impactful exterior design with strong accents.

Bold surfaces, compact dimensions, wide tracks, and athletic proportions highlight the performance character of the new BMW M2. M-specific design features geared to the functional requirements of cooling air routing and aerodynamic balance accentuate the eye-catching appearance of the two-door car.

A large, horizontal BMW kidney grille and the three-section split lower air intake optimise cooling of the powertrain components and brakes.

The model-specific LED headlights are positioned towards the outer edges of the front end and in tribute to the iconic BMW 02 models, they each have a single circular headlight that generates both low and high beam. U-shaped light guides at the lower edge of the headlights serve as both the daytime driving lights and turn indicators. Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling High Beam Assistant and M lights Shadowline with dark inlays are also standard.

The high-performance model’s profile is shaped by the elegant lines which have become a signature feature of the brand’s coupés. In combination with prominent side sill extensions and muscular wheel arches, this creates a compact two-door form with a richly sporting character. Optionally, the BMW M2 can also be ordered with a M Carbon roof that not only reduces the car’s weight by six kilograms, but also increases agility by lowering its centre of gravity.

The rear apron of the new BMW M2 features a powerfully sculpted diffuser while the exhaust system feeds into two pairs of exhaust tailpipes, which are positioned a significant distance from the edges of the rear end. The trims for the twin tailpipes are now finished in black as standard, alongside the model lettering on the boot lid and radiator grille.

Significantly expanded range of exterior paint finishes; light-alloy wheels with a new design.

Customers can order their new BMW M2 in a choice of three solid colours, five metallic shades and six BMW Individual paint finishes. The significantly expanded range includes new Sao Paulo Yellow solid, Fire Red metallic, Portimao Blue metallic and Skyscraper Grey metallic variants. Plus, the selection of BMW Individual paint finishes including Java Green, Voodoo Blue, Grigio Telesto and Twilight Purple.

The new BMW M2 is fitted as standard with front axle 19inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design with a Jet Black finish and 20 inches at the rear. Customers can optionally choose these alloys in Silver. They can be combined with track tyres, if the optional M Race Track package is specified.

New steering wheels and seat surfaces, M Carbon bucket seats now also available as an individual option.
A newly designed steering wheel brings a fresh look to the interior of the new BMW M2. Now with a flat-bottomed rim and precisely modified spokes, the M leather steering wheel also features a red centre marker, gearshift paddles and two M buttons for selecting individually configured vehicle setups. An M Alcantara steering wheel is also available optionally in the same design with steering wheel heating included as standard on the new BMW M2 for both steering wheel variants.

Weight-minimised M Carbon bucket seats are available as an individual option as well as part of the M Race Track package and the standard M Sport seats in Vernasca leather can be ordered in a red/black bi-colour variant. With surfaces in Merino leather, multi-way electric adjustment, and a facility for adding a multi-point harness, they optimise the cars comfort.  

BMW Operating System 8.5, digital control for the climate functions.

A 12.3-inch information display and 14.9-inch control display show the latest evolution of the BMW iDrive control system. Based on BMW Operating System 8.5, temperature, and ventilation settings as well as the seat heating and – if specified – steering wheel heating in the new BMW M2 can be controlled either by touch using a special menu option in the lower area of the control display or by voice command with the help of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

The interior trim elements in the instrument panel and centre console of the new BMW M2 come as standard in Dark Graphite matt. Interior trim elements in Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite, M Carbon Fibre or new Fine Brushed Aluminium are available optionally.

M-specific operating concept, extensive standard equipment.

At the heart of the M-specific operating concept is the Setup button on the centre console. This provides direct access to the settings options for the engine, standard adaptive M suspension, M Servotronic steering, integrated braking system working in conjunction with the M Compound brakes, and the M Traction Control function, which allows drivers to set individual intervention thresholds for wheel slip limitation. The Gear Shift Assistant of the optional manual gearbox is also activated and deactivated via the M Setup menu.

Standard equipment for the new BMW M2 also includes two-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, harman/Kardon loudspeaker system, a wireless charging tray and the BMW Live Cockpit Plus with BMW Maps navigation system. The likewise standard smartphone integration enables use of Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. As well as the BMW Head-Up Display, the  standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional in the new BMW M2 now includes Augmented View on the control display.

Semi-automated driving and parking systems come as standard, including front collision warning, Cruise Control with brake function, Speed Limit Info function with no-overtaking indicator, Lane Departure Warning and Park Distance Control with sensors at the front and rear of the car. Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go and an electrically operated slide/tilt sunroof can be added to the new BMW M2 from the optional equipment list to further enhance the interior ambience and driving experience.

BMW UK is pleased to be celebrating another successful year end, collecting a host of awards across the winter period, including accolades from Top Gear, Carwow, Electrifying.com, The Car Expert and GREENFLEET. The newly launched BMW i5 received the first awards since its market launch in October 2023, with three category wins.

2023 was another hugely successful year for BMW in the UK, with the brand achieving more than 50 major independent awards. The BMW i7 continued to impress judges following its launch last year, picking up nine prizes across the year, whilst the BMW UK was awarded ‘Fleet Manufacturer of the Year’ by three industry leading outlets.

Frank van Meel collects ‘All The Car You’ll Ever Need’ win at Top Gear Awards 2023
The Top Gear Awards celebrated the greatest cars of 2023 amongst a host of industry experts and leaders in November. Flying to London especially for the awards, BMW M CEO Frank van Meel took to the stage to accept the award ‘All The Car You’ll Ever Need’ for the BMW M3 Touring, a car first World Premiered in the UK at Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2022.

The first-ever BMW M3 Touring blends blistering performance with everyday practicality with Top Gear Editor-in-Chief Jack Rix adding: “The M3 Touring hits every base on the bullseye. It’s exquisitely trimmed and lavishly equipped, yet it’ll moisten your palms, dry your throat and griddle your backside between home and the tip.”

All-new BMW i5 wins at Carwow ‘Car of the year’ Awards 2024
The Carwow 2024 awards showcased the very best cars on the market, alongside an array of highly commended alternatives, whatever a customer’s budget.  The content team - who run Carwow’s YouTube channel with over 8 million subscribers - reviewed hundreds of vehicles over 2023 and decided on 12 category winners, recognising and celebrating the cream of the crop.

Launched in the UK in October 2023, the BMW i5 is the eighth generation 5 Series and the first all-electric iteration of the model. Fusing advanced technology with elegant and sporty style, the new i5 won the ‘Comfortable Cruiser’ award from Carwow for 2024. Mat Watson, Carwow Chief Content Officer, said: “The 5 Series is BMW’s legendary saloon, so updating it always comes with pressure. But the first electric i5? Nailed it! BMW has built a posh premium electric car that’s good for the family but also good to drive, has loads of tech, buckets of performance and is a brilliant long-distance cruiser.”

Alongside the category win for the new all-electric model, BMW picked up five commendations for a variety of its models. The BMW X7 was Highly Commended in the ‘Family Values’ award category, the BMW M3 Touring was Highly Commended in ‘Desirability’ award category and the BMW M5 was Highly Commended for ‘2024's Most Anticipated New Car’. The BMW M2 was Highly Commended in the ‘Pleasure of Driving’ award category and the BMW i7 rear screens were also Highly Commended in the ‘Tech Trailblazer’ award category.

The Electrifying.com Awards are given to the brands, fully electric vehicles and innovations that an expert panel of judges believe represent a significant achievement in the field. The judging panel consisted of a variety of experienced and trusted electric car reviewers including; Founder and CEO of Electrifying.com, Ginny Buckley; Associate Editor at Electrifying.com and Formula E presenter, Nicki Shields; and experienced automotive journalist, and EV advocate, Tom Barnard.

Three category wins for BMW at The Car Expert Awards 2024
Using the power of their exclusive Expert Rating Index, The Car Experts tracked new car reviews from 35 of the UK’s leading motoring websites over the last 12 months and compiled all of the scores awarded to each new model. These scores are then fed into a sophisticated algorithm that accounts for the various different scoring system that the different websites and magazines use, which then allows the awards to be given for the very best new cars customers can buy in 2023.

BMW has rounded out 2023 with not one but three category wins at The Car Expert Awards 2024, with the all-new BMW i5 being awarded Best Large Car on the night, alongside the BMW M2 receiving Best Performance Car and finally the BMW i7 being honoured with Best Luxury Car.

Stuart Masson, Editorial Director at The Car Expert, heralded the importance of the 5 Series model stating: “The arrival of any new 5 Series is a seminal moment for the car industry,” and further went on to praise the introduction of the new electric derivative “The i5 has moved straight to the top of the premium executive class, with a sublime mix of comfort, quality and advanced technology.”

For the third year running, BMW has been awarded the performance car award. Built on its predecessor with an increased performance and an enhanced specification the M2 takes the trophy for the Performance Car of the Year, Masson said: “Its performance will scare a few supercars, both in a straight line and through the trickiest of corners. A triumph.”

Finishing the year with a ninth accolade, the BMW i7 embodies luxury and technology, with the latest generation of the flagship saloon defining the luxury segment with Stuart Masson stating: “The BMW i7 has received near-universal praise from the UK media since its arrival, with its spacious and tech-laden cabin being earmarked as a particular highlight.”

BMW recognised as Fleet Car Manufacturer of the Year at 2023 GREENFLEET Awards
The 2023 GREENFLEET awards continued to celebrate environmental excellence within the fleet sector, taking a close look at organisation and individuals that have gone above and beyond to reduce transport emissions.

The event - which took place at the British Motor Museum and was attended by the BMW Corporate Sales team - saw BMW take the top spot as Fleet Car Manufacturer of the Year. Colin Boyton, GREENFLEET Event Manager, said “This was one of the most hotly-contested categories this year. A leading name on most UK fleet option lists, BMW is taking electrification seriously, with electric versions of its staple models at its core, and electric SUV models complimenting its line-up.”

GREENFLEET is the third major title to name BMW Fleet Manufacturer of the Year in 2023, following the Fleet News Awards and the Business Car Awards.

Munich. The retrofit products from the BMW M Performance Parts program not only enhance numerous current BMW models but also provide an additional touch of motorsport feeling to the high-performance sports cars of the BMW M GmbH. Among the particularly notable examples of technology transferred directly from the racetrack to the road are the centrelock wheels, available for selected high-performance automobiles. Design and functionality make these lightweight forged wheels absolute highlights in the diverse range of BMW M Performance Parts.

With their optimized weight, emotionally charged design, and technology adapted from motorsport connecting to the wheel bearing, the centrelock wheels emphasize the high-performance-oriented character of the vehicles equipped with them. In the case of the special edition BMW 3.0 CSL, presented on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of BMW M GmbH and sold in a limited edition of 50 units, they are part of the specifically tuned racetrack performance chassis technology. Currently, BMW M Performance centrelock wheels are offered in the Original BMW Accessories program for the BMW M2 (combined fuel consumption: 9.9 – 9.6 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 223 – 218 g/km according to WLTP), the BMW M3 Touring Competition with M xDrive (combined fuel consumption: 10.4 – 10.1 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 235 – 229 g/km according to WLTP), as well as for all model variants of the BMW M3 Sedan, BMW M4 Coupe, and BMW M4 Convertible.

BMW M Performance centrelock wheel: Wheel change like the pros.

Centrelock wheels were developed for motorsport, where they enable particularly fast wheel changes and, consequently, short pit stops. Instead of the usual five screws, each wheel is attached to the wheel hub with only one central screw. An extremely solid connection is ensured during the installation of the central locks by applying a torque of 930 Nm. This technology not only makes pure racetrack DNA tangible during wheel changes but also reduces rotating masses and optimizes the exclusive appearance through a distinctive design in the hub area.

The M Performance centrelock wheels for the models of the BMW M2, BMW M3, and BMW M4 are offered as a combined set in sizes 19 inches for the front axle and 20 inches for the rear axle. The lightweight forged wheels in Y-spoke design, in Jet Black matte color, feature a milled M Performance lettering and come equipped with tires in dimensions 275/35 ZR19 for the front and 285/30 ZR20 for the rear.

Individual motorsport characteristics for exterior and interior.

Like the centrelock wheels, other products from the BMW M Performance Parts program are based on the development know-how and more than five decades of motorsport experience of the BMW M GmbH. The diverse range includes retrofit options in the areas of suspension, drivetrain, aerodynamics, and cockpit, enabling a performance-oriented customization and providing a racetrack feeling in everyday traffic. For a targeted boost in dynamics and agility, options such as the M Performance suspension with height-adjustable spring perches and the M Performance sport brake system are available.

Additionally, the athletic appearance of a BMW M car can be enhanced with model-specific carbon components. The BMW M Performance Parts for the exterior are mostly made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), sealed with clear lacquer for a high-quality finish. Model-specific options such as the M Performance front attachment carbon, the M Performance rear diffuser, or the M Performance side sill insert carbon give the vehicle a characterful appearance in a racing-style.

The uncompromising quality and special aesthetics of the BMW M Performance Parts are also experienced in the interior. High-quality carbon and Alcantara elements convey the motorsport genes of BMW M into the cockpit. M Performance knee pads with Alcantara surface provide optimized grip during particularly dynamic cornering. And both the M Performance steering wheel Pro and the M Performance armrest Alcantara offer perfect conditions for an especially intense driving experience.

Maintaining the company’s award-winning reputation across the industry in 2023, BMW Group UK and its latest models continued to make waves, scooping up numerous prestigious awards in June and July, with battery electric models garnering significant attention. BMW Group UK takes home six awards at the Auto Express New Car Awards 2023

BMW Group UK proudly took home six awards from the Auto Express New Car Awards 2023, demonstrating its continued excellence across a variety of categories and reinforcing the breadth of its model portfolio. BMW secured five awards across numerous categories and MINI garnered an additional victory with the MINI Convertible.

The third-generation BMW X1, launched in the summer of 2022, led its class according to Auto Express by winning the Small Premium SUV of the Year award. With its distinctive design, increased interior space, premium ambience, and high-level standard specification.

Introduced in November 2021, the i4— the first fully-electric BMW Gran Coupé—continues to make an impression nearly two years post-launch, claiming the Premium Car of the Year award. Another of the BMW brand’s fully-electric models, the BMW iX, impressed judges with its luxurious and contemporary interior, earning the Best Large Company Car of the Year accolade.

The brand’s flagship model, the BMW i7, already boasting four major awards since its UK launch at the end of 2022, now adds Auto Express’ Luxury Car of the Year to its roster. Offering a cutting-edge digital experience with the BMW Theatre Screen and BMW Interaction Bar, the BMW i7 combines striking style with a luxurious interior to lead its segment.

The all-new BMW M2, which launched recently in the UK, received its first accolade in the UK at the Auto Express New Car Awards 2023, securing the Performance Car of the Year title. Building on its powerful predecessor, the latest M2 embodies the pure joy of driving by fusing classic high-performance sports car elements with cutting-edge technology.

Finally, the MINI Convertible emerged victorious in the Convertible of the Year category for the sixth time—a testament to the model's enduring appeal. Available in the UK with a high standard specification, and also offered as a BEV – a first for its kind.

BMW iX3 boasts Best Premium Electric Car at the Auto Trader New Car Awards 2023

At the seventh annual Auto Trader New Car Awards in June, the BMW iX3 clinched the award for the Best Premium Electric Car. The awards are decided by over 220,000 UK car owners who completed an online survey sharing exactly what they think of their car, with their thoughts and opinions determining the final category winners.

Erin Baker, Auto Trader’s Editorial Director, said: “The iX3 is all the electric SUV anyone needs, with a plush interior, spirited performance and that legendary BMW ride and handling. One owner summed it up perfectly by saying: ‘The driving experience is second to none, it’s comfortable, fast, smooth and quiet. Love it.’ Huge congrats, BMW.”

BMW i4 shines in the Autovista Group Residual Value Awards

In June, the BMW i4 secured the Compact and Large Battery-Electric Vehicle (BEV) category at the inaugural Autovista Group Residual Value Awards. The awards, which assess data from 17 different European markets, recognise the models with superior value retention. Judges chose i4 as the winner of this category due to its strong performance across all major markets, with the model's success attributed to its sleek silhouette, enjoyable driving experience, strong family identity, internal space on par with the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé and impressive range.

The Autovista24 team commended the i4's design, emphasising that it looks more like a conventional BMW than an exclusively battery-electric model, broadening its appeal to a wide range of drivers in both new and used car markets.

The new BMW M2 builds on its formidable predecessor’s strengths to deliver an even greater driving experience, taking the formula of a classic high-performance sports car and reproducing it in highly concentrated form with cutting-edge technology.

The new BMW M2 encapsulates the pure joy of driving: its compact dimensions, a six-cylinder in-line engine, a manual gearbox option, rear-wheel drive and an advanced control/operating concept – allowing the driver to adjust the vehicle setup as desired – are all central to its appeal. Surefooted agility on demand and handling that remains easily controllable even as the driver explores the coupé’s limits are at its core. The distinct character profile of the new BMW M2 is reflected in a powerful design that conveys its segment-leading power, even before it turns a wheel.

With a maximum output of 460hp – 90hp more than the original BMW M2 – and exhilarating driving dynamics that have been honed during in-depth testing on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit and other race tracks, the new BMW M2 represents another highlight in the model offensive celebrating the 50-year anniversary of BMW M GmbH.

The two-door machine embodies an unadulterated racing passion that owners can enjoy day in, day out, along with a comprehensive specification ensuring it is as comfortable tackling the city as it is the most demanding race circuits. The advances over the first-generation BMW M2, which became the largest-selling model in the BMW M line-up with almost 60,000 examples sold worldwide, are evident not just from the car’s sharper performance but also its far more extensive standard specification. A focused selection of options is available for enhancing driving comfort or adding even more visual excitement to both the exterior and interior. A standout optional extra is the bespoke M Race Track Package that is designed to maximise the performance experience, its benefits including raising the electronically limited top speed of 155mph to 177mph.

The new BMW M2 is built alongside the new BMW 2 Series Coupé at the BMW Group’s San Luis Potosí plant in Mexico, with prices in the UK starting from £64,890 OTR.

Advanced twin-turbo, high-revving 3.0-litre engine develops 460hp

The powertrain technology in the new BMW M2 brings elite performance to the premium compact segment. It is the only model in its segment to be offered with a six-cylinder in-line engine.

Developing a maximum 460hp from its advanced engine, the new BMW M2 outguns the base unit used by the original BMW M2 by 90hp. Indeed, its output is even 10hp higher than that of the special-edition BMW M2 CS from the previous model generation. The 3.0-litre unit differs only in a small number of details from the engine employed in the BMW M3/BMW M4 models.

The straight-six engine combines the latest M TwinPower Turbo technology with the high-revving characteristics of an M car. Peak torque of 550Nm is produced between 2,650 and 5,870rpm and maximum output arrives at 6,250rpm. The engine revs to a maximum 7,200rpm.

The design principle behind the engine and its technical details reflects the vast motorsport experience of BMW M GmbH. A rigid crankcase, friction-optimised cylinder bores, a crankshaft drive with high torsional rigidity and a forged crankshaft with lightweight design enhance the engine’s efficiency, power development and high-revving nature. The core of the cylinder head is 3D printed, enabling a weight reduction and optimised coolant duct routing.

Two mono-scroll turbochargers supply compressed air to the combustion chambers. The turbocharging system also features an indirect intercooler and an electronically controlled wastegate. Other elements of M TwinPower Turbo technology are High Precision Injection, which works with maximum pressure of 350 bar, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing.

Track-focused, M-specific cooling and oil supply systems

The M-specific cooling system ensures the powertrain components maintain an optimal operating temperature at all times – both in everyday use over short distances or in urban areas, and during high-speed track outings. The oil supply system is also designed to handle all driving situations. An oil sump with two separate chambers and an additional suction stage allows the map-controlled oil pump to keep lubricant flowing reliably even under extreme lateral and longitudinal acceleration.

The M-specific exhaust system with electrically controlled flaps generates an emotionally rich soundtrack. It terminates in a large silencer, from which the exhaust gases escape via a quartet of tailpipes in customary BMW M fashion.

Choice of an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic or a six-speed manual gearbox

The new BMW M2 comes as standard with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. However, a six-speed manual gearbox is optional, which creates a performance experience in the classical mould. The gear ratios and gear spread are perfectly matched to the performance characteristics of the engine. A precisely defined shift action enables rapid, easily executed gear changes. Plus, the Gear Shift Assistant uses engagement speed control to ensure slip-free operation when downshifting under braking into corners. It can be deactivated in the M Setup menu.

The eight-speed M Steptronic transmission is also distinguished by ratio spacing perfectly matched to the engine’s characteristics and offers sporty gear shifts. The broadly spread gears assist efficiency at low engine speeds while enabling an intense build-up of power from low road speeds.

As well as the new-look selector lever, there are shift paddles on the steering wheel for performing manual shifts with sequential gear selection. It is also possible to execute multiple downshifts to the lowest available gear in manual mode for a sudden burst of acceleration. M Steptronic does not force upshifts under acceleration in manual mode – even when the engine’s revs hit the limiter.

The transmission’s shift characteristics can be varied using the Drivelogic button integrated into the selector lever, with a choice of three clearly distinguishable settings available in both automated and manual mode. Besides a more comfort-oriented setup and a setting for sporty driving, drivers are also able to activate a track-optimised configuration for the shift characteristics.

Examples fitted with the optional six-speed manual gearbox accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 4.3 seconds, while cars with the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission cover the same sprint in 4.1 seconds. The new BMW M2 powers from 0 to 124mph in 14.3 seconds (automatic: 13.5 seconds). Top speed is electronically limited to 155mph, although this can be raised to 177mph with the optional M Driver’s Package.

Exceptional dynamics, optimal traction: rear-wheel drive and the Active M Differential

By sending its power to the rear wheels, the new BMW M2 is embracing the traditional recipe for converting engine output into dynamic performance.

Another contributor to the assured dynamics of the BMW M2 is its standard Active M Differential. It can halt rotational speed compensation between the rear wheels whenever required and generate a locking effect of up to 100 per cent. The Active M Differential is linked with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system to adapt its locking effect precisely to the driving situation.

Sophisticated chassis technology originally developed for the BMW M3/BMW M4 endows the new BMW M2 with all the tools required to convert the power of its straight-six engine into sublime straight-line and lateral performance. At the same time, the compact dimensions, short wheelbase, excellent longitudinal and torsional stiffness of the body and chassis mountings that is optimised by M-specific bracing, and the almost perfectly balanced 50:50 weight distribution, combine to deliver precisely controllable, fingertip handling. Add rear-wheel drive to the mix and the result is pure driving pleasure.

M Servotronic steering and adaptive M suspension as standard

The M Servotronic steering facilitates accurate turn-in when powering through bends on the one hand and effortless parking and manoeuvring on the other. It does so by combining the benefits of speed-sensitive power assistance and a variable steering ratio. There is a choice of two settings for steering response in the M Setup menu – Comfort and Sport.

The adaptive M suspension that also comes as standard features electronically controlled dampers designed to maximise road contact and traction in all driving situations. The dampers are controlled with the help of sensors that keep a constant eye on body movements, the condition of the road and steering adjustments. The basic damper characteristics can be varied as desired by selecting one of the three settings in the M Setup menu.

M specific integrated braking system with two settings for pedal feel

The M Compound brakes on the new BMW M2 – comprising six-piston, fixed-calliper brakes with 380mm discs at the front wheels and their single-piston, floating-calliper counterparts with integrated parking brake and 370mm discs at the rear – deliver outstanding stopping power. The callipers are painted in Red as standard, with a Blue finish available as an option, and bear the M logo.

The integrated braking system slows the car down with great precision. This system brings together the brake activation, brake booster and braking control functions within a compact module. The new BMW M2 has an M-specific version that presents the driver with two pedal feel settings, allowing them to choose between more comfort-oriented or very direct execution of brake pedal inputs.

The new BMW M2 comes as standard with exclusively designed double-spoke M light-alloy wheels that feature a black finish, but optionally available with a Bi-colour finish. Measuring 19-inch at the front and 20-inch at the rear, they are shod with tyres measuring 275/35 ZR19 and 285/30 ZR20 at the front and rear respectively. Track tyres are also available as an option, in conjunction with the M Race Track Package.

M Drive Professional with M Traction Control also fitted as standard

The inclusion of the integrated braking system enables the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system to act with even greater dynamism and precision. Its range of functions includes M Dynamic Mode, which allows extra wheel slip at the push of a button to induce an exceptionally sporty driving experience. The wheel slip limitation function has been integrated into the engine management on the new BMW M2. This eliminates the long signal paths to the DSC control unit, meaning that the corrective inputs are applied up to ten times faster than in conventional systems and with exceptional precision.

The M Traction Control function included as part of the M Drive Professional allows drivers of the new BMW M2 to set individual intervention thresholds for wheel slip limitation; they can choose from ten stages of precisely defined slip permitted at the driven wheels. During outings on the track, drivers can therefore carefully reduce the extent of control system inputs to configure a setup for controlled drifts that is tailored to the track and their personal preferences.

Compact dimensions fused with powerful proportions

The BMW M2’s sporty credentials are showcased by the two-door car’s compact dimensions. Measuring 4,575mm from nose to tail, 1,887mm wide and 1,403mm in height, it is 114mm longer than its predecessor, 16mm wider and 11mm lower. It is 219mm shorter than the BMW M4 Coupé models.

The 2,747mm wheelbase of the new BMW M2 makes a prominent contribution to its fingertip agility. It is 110mm shorter than that of the BMW M4 Coupé but 54mm longer than its predecessor, delivering more legroom in both rows of seats. Its track widths have increased by 38mm (to 1,617mm) at the front and 4mm (to 1,605mm) at the rear. This means they precisely match the figures for the BMW M4 Coupé, which further highlights the difference in dimensions compared with the BMW 2 Series Coupé: the high-performance model is 49mm wider, with a 44mm wider track at the front and 18mm wider rear track.

M-specific design features accentuate the performance-led character

The car’s powerfully sculpted form marks a clear differentiation from the BMW 2 Series Coupé, which is also emphasised by its wide stance and M-specific design features that optimise cooling air routing and aerodynamic balance.

The front end is headlined by its large, horizontal and frameless BMW kidney grille. The elements of the M-typical three-section lower air intake have almost rectangular contours and maximise cooling of the powertrain components and brakes. Adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling High-beam Assistant and M lights Shadow Line with dark inlays are standard.

Lightweight M Carbon roof as standard

Prominently flared side skirts team up with broad wheel arches to create an appearance that is characteristic of BMW M and inspired by racing cars. The car’s silhouette is shaped by its long bonnet, short overhangs and set-back passenger compartment. The roofline swooping down from the B-pillar, and the short boot lid culminating in a pronounced spoiler lip add to its distinctive style.

The new BMW M2 comes with a lightweight M Carbon roof as standard. With its dark colouring, the exposed structure of its carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), and a central cut-out, the M Carbon roof makes a stand-out visual impression as well as contributing to the car’s weight-saving measures.

Rear diffuser incorporating signature M exhaust tailpipes

Horizontally pronounced surfaces give the rear end of the new BMW M2 its structure. These surfaces get their M-specific looks from the vertically arranged reflectors set deep into the outer edges of the rear apron, and a rear spoiler lip designed to generate extra downforce at the rear axle. The most striking element is the pronounced diffuser insert. This air-directing element adopts a pared-back racing look and incorporates another signature M feature: the two pairs of exhaust tailpipes.

Five exterior paint finishes to choose from

The new BMW M2 is available in two solid and three metallic exterior paint shades. The selection comprises Alpine White solid, Sapphire Black metallic and Brooklyn Grey metallic, plus the Toronto Red metallic and finally the new colour Zandvoort Blue solid, available exclusively for the model.

Optional M Carbon bucket seats offer a weight saving of nearly 11kgs

The standard M Sport seats, heated and upholstered in Vernasca Black or Cognac leather, feature pronounced side bolsters and contour lines around the backrest and head restraint in BMW M GmbH colours. They come with electrical adjustment and their integral head restraints feature an illuminated M logo. M seat belts with a woven stripe pattern in BMW M GmbH colours are also standard.

The optional M Carbon bucket seats are also fully electric and heated, featuring integral head restraints and an illuminated model badge. The Merino leather seat covering optimises comfort, while removable head restraints and a facility for adding a multi-point harness underline the racing credentials of the M Carbon bucket seats. The use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the structural elements of the seat cushion and backrest together with the cut-outs in the side bolsters and below the head restraints saves 10.8kgs over the M Sport seats.

The Easy-Entry function makes it easier for passengers to access the two rear seats. The rear backrest also has a 40:20:40 split and, when the backrest is upright, there is 390 litres of boot space.

M interior trim strips in Carbon Fibre are standard, with the shift paddles and trim on the M leather steering wheel also having a CFRP finish.

Three-zone automatic climate control and ambient lighting as standard

Three-zone automatic climate control, acoustic glazing for the windscreen and a rain sensor with automatic headlight activation are standard on the BMW M2, along with ambient lighting, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, a Harman Kardon Surround Sound System, a Bluetooth interface and two USB ports. The optional wireless charging enables inductive charging of compatible smartphones.

Driver assistance systems for optimised comfort and safety

Cutting-edge driver assistance systems allow comfort over long journeys to be enhanced effectively and safety to be optimised. The new BMW M2 is equipped as standard with Parking Assistant with rear view camera and front and rear sensors, Cruise Control with brake function, Front Collision Warning with brake intervention, Lane Departure Warning including lane return, the Attentiveness Assistant and the Speed Limit Display with no-overtaking indicator and Manual Speed Limit Assist.

The optional Driving Assistant adds the Lane Change Warning, Rear Crossing Traffic Warning and Rear Collision Prevention functions. The Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function that can also be found on the options list maintains the chosen cruising speed while also automatically keeping a safe distance from vehicles travelling ahead, with a choice of four proximity settings.

Setup button for individual configuration of powertrain and chassis

A key feature of the M-specific control/operation concept is the Setup button in the centre console’s control panel, which provides direct access to the settings options for the engine, chassis, steering, braking system and ten-stage traction control. On models fitted with the manual transmission, the Gear Shift Assistant can also be activated and deactivated from the M Setup menu.

Two individually configured setup variants can be stored permanently, together with the preferred settings for the engine note, the DSC system, the Automatic Start/Stop function and the shift characteristics of the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, if specified.

M Mode button: unadulterated performance at the push of a button

Also located in the centre console’s control panel is the M Mode button, which opens the door to an incredible performance experience. SPORT mode, which can be activated as an alternative to the default ROAD setting, scales back the range of driver assistance system functions to a minimum. As the new BMW M2 is fitted with M Drive Professional as standard, drivers are also able to select the TRACK mode designed purely for driving on race circuits, which fully deactivates the assistance systems.

As well as M Traction Control and TRACK mode, M Drive Professional also includes the M Laptimer and M Drift Analyser functions for even more fun on the track.

M Race Track Package: reduced weight, increased dynamism

The optional M Race Track Package includes M Carbon bucket seats for the driver and front passenger, performance track tyres for the double-spoke 19-inch and 20-inch alloy wheels and the M Driver’s Package, which increases the car’s electronically limited top speed from 155mph to 177mph.

The new BMW M2 also features the BMW Live Cockpit Professional as standard. Based on BMW Operating System 8 and boasting new-generation software along with exceptionally powerful connectivity and data processing, it takes the interaction between the driver and vehicle into the digital future.

The new BMW iDrive system offers more ways for drivers to enjoy easy, intuitive, multimodal control of vehicle, navigation, infotainment and communication functions and also to use digital services.

BMW Curved Display with M-style content

The standard BMW Curved Display in the new BMW M2 cockpit is angled clearly towards the driver to good ergonomic effect, making the intuitive touch control even more straightforward. It is formed by a 12.3-inch information display and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches.

The information display’s graphical layout and the M‑style content shown there lend themselves to a focused, performance-led driving experience.

BMW Maps navigation system and M-specific Head-Up Display as standard.

The cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system forms part of the standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional. The latest generation of this navigation system enables extremely fast route calculation, carried out dynamically and based on precise real-time traffic data transmitted at short intervals. The BMW Head-Up Display features M‑specific readouts and graphics.

Also standard is smartphone integration for Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, whilst wireless charging for compatible smartphones is optionally available. The BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades functionality allows new and improved vehicle functions to be imported into the new BMW M2 over the air.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant with new skills

The control/operation system in the new BMW M2 also includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. BMW Operating System 8 unlocks additional skills for this digital companion. Naturally formulated spoken instructions can now be used to adjust the air conditioning, for instance, or open and close the windows. Driver assistance system functions can likewise be voice controlled.

Personalisation using the BMW ID and My BMW App

The user experience for the new BMW M2 customers is increasingly personalised thanks to their BMW ID. The BMW ID can now be used to store and share more personalised settings between vehicles, while the My BMW App acts as a universal digital interface, providing information on the vehicle’s status at any time, even permitting monitoring of the car’s immediate vicinity (Remote 3D View).

The BMW M Performance Parts for the car’s aerodynamics, powertrain, chassis and cockpit offer a wide variety of options for customising the new BMW M2 with maximum performance in mind. All the components were developed on the back of BMW M GmbH’s motor-racing expertise and the experienced it has garnered over five decades, and have been precisely tuned to match the two-door model’s specific characteristics. They reinforce the pure-bred performance credentials of the new BMW M2, whose compact dimensions, 338 kW/460 hp six-cylinder in-line engine, optionally available six-speed manual gearbox, sophisticated chassis technology and rear-wheel drive make the first step into the world of high-performance cars from BMW M GmbH a hugely enticing one.

Exclusive materials, enhanced aerodynamic properties: the BMW M Performance exterior components.

All the retrofit products in the BMW M Performance Parts portfolio stand out with their high-impact design, exclusive materials and top quality. The BMW M Performance exterior components for the new BMW M2 therefore match the two-door model’s styling and geometry to perfection. And they have already undergone homologation alongside the overall vehicle, meaning they comply with statutory safety regulations as well as the BMW Group’s own strict standards.

The carbon-fibre add-on parts for the front, sides and rear are made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic. They optimise the car’s aerodynamic properties while also accentuating its racing aura with a clear coat finish that exposes the composition of fibres beneath. The M Performance front splitter carbon fibre and M Performance air intake trim carbon fibre, for instance, ensure the new BMW M2 makes a particularly striking impression. Customers wishing to give the car’s side profile a sharper visual edge have a choice of M Performance side skirt attachments carbon fibre, M Performance side spats carbon fibre front and rear and M exterior mirror caps carbon fibre. Airflow around the vehicle can be optimised with the M Performance rear lip spoiler carbon fibre and M Performance rear diffuser carbon fibre. Meanwhile, the M Performance rear spoiler carbon fibre and M Performance roof-edge spoiler in high-gloss Black dial the racing flair up to the max. Further personal touches can be added to the vehicle exterior in the form of an M Performance tow strap and an M Performance antenna cover in aramid, another exclusive fibre composite material.

Less weight, more sound: titanium M Performance silencer system.

The titanium M Performance silencer system available for the new BMW M2 boasts reduced weight, an unmistakable look and distinct racing-car acoustics. Its front pipes are made from lightweight stainless steel while the rear silencer has an all-titanium construction. As a result, the titanium M Performance silencer system is some eight kilograms lighter than the standard item. The exhaust system with its electrically controlled flaps and centrally positioned quartet of tailpipes is offered in combination with a specially modified M Performance rear diffuser carbon fibre. The tailpipe trim module is also made from titanium and has a ceramic coating. Optimised routing of the exhaust gases creates an even sportier driving experience. The soundtrack can be adjusted using the powertrain settings in the M Setup menu and hits a particularly exhilarating note reminiscent of a racing car in Sport and Sport+ modes.

M Performance tailpipe trims in titanium/carbon fibre are available as an eye-catching addition to the standard exhaust system fitted on the new BMW M2. Their sophisticated mix of materials and perforated inner pipes lend the rear end a highly exclusive air.

M Performance suspension with height-adjustable spring cups.

The M Performance suspension available as a retrofit item for the new BMW M2 endows it with even sharper agility and cornering dynamics. Its coilover design with height-adjustable spring cups at the front and rear axle allows the ride height to be lowered by up to 10 millimetres as required. Specially tuned for the new BMW M2, not just on the track but on regular roads as well, the M Performance suspension results in a far more direct connection between the body and road surface. This allows drivers to experience track-inspired driving dynamics on everyday journeys.

The M Performance forged wheels offered for the new BMW M2 also provide the ideal ingredients for an extremely sporty driving style. Each sculpted from a single piece of aluminium, they represent a compelling proposition with their exceptional stability, perfectly true running and visually striking design. The items for the new BMW M2 have a cross-spoke design measuring 20 inches in diameter at the front axle and 21 inches at the rear, which can be ordered in a choice of M Frozen Gold Bronze or M Jet Black matt. The M Performance tyre bags bring motor sport feeling to the customer’s garage, too. They are printed with a logo in the BMW M GmbH colours and a graphic indicating the wheel position, and also have a reinforced handle for easy transportation.

Precision doses of extra racing flair for the interior.

The BMW M Performance Parts range also features high-grade components for the interior of the BMW M2 that bring targeted enhancements to its sports-car cockpit. The M Performance interior trim panels in carbon fibre/Alcantara offered in combination with Alcantara knee pads intensify the racing-car aura inside the cabin. The elaborately hand-crafted interior trim panels are made from open-pore, matt-coated carbon fibre and come with M Performance badging in brushed aluminium. Also available as an individual option, the Alcantara M Performance knee pads offer additional support under particularly hard cornering and set the seal on the sporting ambience. A matching M Performance armrest in Alcantara is also available for the centre console of the new BMW M2.

On models equipped with M Sport seats, the sense of sportiness and exclusivity can be turned up another notch with the M Performance backrest covers in carbon fibre/Alcantara. The hand-crafted head restraint trims are available in a choice of open-pore or high-gloss carbon fibre and carry an M Performance badge. The remainder of the rear panel for the driver’s and front passenger seats is trimmed in Alcantara.

The M Performance steering wheel Pro is ideal for cornering with supreme precision. It features a distinctly contoured grip area in Alcantara with large thumb rests and a special lining, while the rim’s upper section and slightly flattened lower section are wrapped in top-quality fulled leather. A centre marker and decorative stitching in the BMW M GmbH colours put the finishing touches to the steering wheel’s stunning looks. The M Performance steering wheel trims offer another route to increased driving pleasure with their high-quality materials and racing-car feel. Munich. With just a few months remaining until the world premiere of the new BMW M2*, the final test phase in the development of the new high-performance car is in full swing. The new BMW M2 offers thoroughbred racing technology for the roads. In keeping with its affinity with the racetrack, the car’s driving dynamics were subjected to an intensive test at the Salzburgring in Austria.

The tests focussed on the driving dynamics and chassis, and the new BMW M2 impressed with outstanding characteristics. The new production car boasts a similar performance level to the BMW M2 CS**, the exclusive, special-edition sports car from BMW M GmbH. It allows the driver to experience that pure racetrack feeling in any conditions – even at the limit.

The power under the bonnet of the BMW M2 is provided by the tried-and-tested engines from the M3 and M4 models. The two optional transmission types, the manual 6-speed gearbox and 8-speed M Steptronic gearbox, guarantee that the power is applied extremely dynamically, redefining sheer driving pleasure. The sporty driving characteristics are intensified by the adaptive M chassis and the rear-wheel drive on the new BMW M2. The powerful brake system comes from the M3 and M4 and ensures the power is controlled effortlessly.

The sporty appearance of the new BMW M2 is rounded off by a selection of special equipment options. For example, a carbon roof to reduce weight, among other benefits. M carbon bucket seats for the driver and passenger, also available as an option, emphasise the racing look of the new BMW M2.

Announced in November 2019, BMW M2 CS started production in early 2020 with the first customer deliveries in spring. This special edition was offered in limited numbers, positioned one rung up the performance ladder from the BMW M2 Competition. The arrival of the new BMW M2 CS is BMW M GmbH’s first CS model in the premium compact high-performance sector and will build on the success already achieved by the awe-inspiring BMW M3 CS and BMW M4 CS models.

A sports car for everyday use, this special edition will be offered in limited numbers and will form the basis for the BMW M2 CS Racing model, BMW M Motorsport’s new entry point to amateur racing and the new Clubsport segment from the 2020 season.

The exclusive BMW M2 CS is positioned one rung up the performance ladder from the BMW M2 Competition. It blends outstanding track performance with unrestricted everyday usability and sets new, class-leading standards for acceleration, handling dynamics, precision and agility designed to stir the emotions of a younger target audience.

BMW M GmbH has used an array of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) components to convey the sports pedigree of the BMW M2 CS, with power provided by a twin-turbocharged straight-six 450hp engine – up by 40hp from the BMW M2 Competition.

In order to achieve maximum agility, the M2 CS features Adaptive M suspension, Michelin Cup tyres and standard M Sport brakes with red-painted callipers, while M Carbon ceramic brakes are available as an option.

Lightweight carbon fibre bonnet and roof.
Both the bonnet and the roof on the BMW M2 CS are made entirely from carbon fibre. The bonnet, which includes a central air vent in High-gloss Black, has been designed to aid engine cooling and increase the car’s downforce over the front wheels. The bonnet’s weight has been halved, while the new roof makes the body more rigid and appears to have been cut from the same mould as the rest of the car; no trim strips are needed, meaning no visible joins either. This has the additional effect of enhancing acoustics, both inside and outside the car. Dispensing with the customary roof bows and insulation also saves weight and, together with the lighter bonnet, this serves to lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity, resulting in even better driving dynamics.

The new front splitter, the Gurney spoiler lip on the boot lid and the rear diffuser are all made from exposed carbon fibre and these three add-ons increase downforce and optimise aerodynamics; the iconic M wing mirrors are in matching carbon fibre. The M2 CS also features a redesigned dual-branch exhaust system with its quartet of stainless-steel tailpipes with M logo, and the car carries an M2 CS badge at the rear. The Misano Blue metallic paint finish is exclusive to the new BMW M2 CS, whilst three other colours from the M2 Competition are optionally available (Hockenheim Silver, Black Sapphire and Alpine White).

Adaptive M suspension and M Sport brakes fitted as standard.
The BMW M2 CS features standard-fitted Adaptive M suspension and M Sport brakes designed with motor racing know-how. The Adaptive M suspension gives drivers the choice of Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes, each of which alters the damper settings. Comfort mode is largely for everyday urban driving, while Sport lends itself to powering along country roads. Drivers taking their BMW M2 CS out on a track will want to select Sport+; which delivers the firmest chassis setup, minimises body movement and maximises dynamic performance.

Electric Power Steering with M-specific characteristics controls power assistance electronically according to the car’s speed and the Drivelogic settings selected. It allows the driver to adapt the level of power assistance to suit their personal preferences and is also adjusted in line with the three suspension modes.

The M Sport brakes also benefit from the motor racing experience of BMW M GmbH. Compared with the M compound brakes featured on the BMW M2 Competition, the brake discs are larger (front: diameter 400mm, rear: diameter 380mm) and the brake callipers – painted in a bold red colour – have also been upgraded (front: six-piston fixed callipers, rear: four-piston fixed callipers). The BMW M2 CS is also available with the option of M Carbon ceramic brakes with six-piston callipers at the front and four-piston units at the rear, with the callipers painted in gold.

Active M Differential and specially tuned DSC.
The BMW M2 CS features Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) which is aided by the Active M Differential to enhance traction and handling stability. The differential’s permanent and continuously variable control results in sharper agility, elimination of understeer at corner entry and superior directional stability during braking and load changes.

As part of DSC, the driver can select M Dynamic Mode (MDM) to allow a greater degree of wheel slip, which can be useful in certain situations such as high-speed track driving. The system pushes back the intervention points for the DSC system’s various stabilising measures, giving drivers extra leeway to explore the car’s dynamic limits. More significant oversteer and understeer are possible, as are moderate, controlled drifts. However, drivers can still depend on the array of DSC driving safety aids to intervene in critical situations.

19-inch wheels with Cup tyres.
The BMW M2 CS rides on 19-inch V-spoke Jet Black forged wheels that have been developed with M GmbH engineers applying the principles of systematic lightweight design. As a result, the front wheels weigh just 9kg while the rears add less than 10kg. The wheels can also be specified in an optional matt gold finish. The front wheels use 245/35 ZR 19 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres with 265/35 ZR 19 tyres at the rear. Customers intending to use their M2 CS mainly for everyday driving can select the no‑cost option of Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres, which generate more grip on wet roads than the Cup 2 tyres.

Engine and performance.
The twin-turbocharged six-cylinder in-line engine in the BMW M2 CS is derived from the unit fitted in the BMW M4 Competition Coupe. The engine uses BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and generates 450hp, which is 40hp more than the BMW M2 Competition. Peak torque of 550Nm is on tap between 2,350 and 5,500rpm and this enables the BMW M2 CS to race from zero to 62mph in just 4.0 seconds when equipped with the optional seven-speed M double-clutch transmission (M DCT). The same sprint takes 4.2 seconds with the six‑speed manual gearbox. Top speed of the special-edition model, which comes complete with the M Driver’s Package, is an electronically governed 174mph. Manual models achieve combined fuel consumption figures of 27.2-27.7mpg and combined CO2 emissions of 238-233g/km*. Cars fitted with the M DCT transmission return 29.4mpg-30.1mpg with CO2 emissions of 219-214g/km*.

Exterior design.
The BMW M2 CS features a number of design modifications over the BMW M2 Competition, such as a bonnet air vent that helps to dissipate hot air more effectively. The BMW M2 CS has retained its sibling’s large kidney grille and large air intakes in the front apron to optimise the flow of air through the car’s front end. The track-tested cooling system originates from the BMW M4 Competition and comprises a central radiator plus two radiators at the sides, along with an additional engine oil cooler. Models specified with the optional seven‑speed M DCT also benefit from a separate transmission oil cooler. This sophisticated system ensures that optimum operating temperatures are maintained at all times, not only in everyday road use and on short urban journeys, but also during track outings.

Dual-branch exhaust system.
The M2 CS also features a dual-branch design with a familiar quartet of tailpipes, each bearing the M logo. Two electrically controlled flaps ensure the BMW M2 CS emits a sound worthy of a BMW M model. The M Engine Dynamics Control function with direct selection buttons in the centre console which allows drivers to vary the engine note further through their driving mode selection.

Choice of two transmissions.
The BMW M2 CS is the first CS model from BMW to be fitted as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. Standout characteristics include its compact construction and low weight, while carbon friction linings for smoother shifting also feature. Shift comfort is further improved by the gearbox’s engagement speed control, which automatically blips the throttle when changing down and lowers the engine revs when changing up. This also gives the car extra stability when pushed hard on the track. Engagement speed control is deactivated when DSC is switched off.

M double-clutch transmission.
Customers can also specify the optional seven-speed M double-clutch transmission (M DCT) with Drivelogic. DCT consists of two sub-transmissions (each with its own clutch) that deliver extremely fast gear changes without any interruption in power flow. The gear changes can be performed either automatically or manually by the driver using the gearshift lever on the centre console or the shift paddles on the M leather steering wheel. In both automatic and manual modes, the Drivelogic function gives the driver the choice of three preconfigured settings: EFFICIENT, SPORT and SPORT+. In automatic mode these alter shift timing, shift speed and the automatic blip of the throttle on downshifts.

The manual mode settings only affect the speed of gear shifts, with the timing determined by the driver. The system can predict the driver’s next gear selection based on rev speed, accelerator pedal position, acceleration and the chosen setting, allowing it to engage the next gear before the shift paddle has even been operated. At this point, one clutch is simply disengaged and the other engaged to complete the gear change with lightning speed.

The interior.
The cabin of the BMW M2 CS blends fine Alcantara and innovative lightweight design. Its centre console is made entirely of lightweight carbon fibre, producing a weight saving of more than 50 per cent compared with the standard car. CFRP has also been used for the door handles and door panel trims.

Other features include a door sill plate with M2 CS badging and the lightweight M Sport driver’s seat fitted in the BMW M4 CS. The seat’s bucket-style design takes its inspiration directly from motor racing and guarantees optimum lateral support even when the driver is pushing the limits on the racetrack. The seat backrests are upholstered in Merino leather and Alcantara: they feature red contrast stitching which is carried through on the armrests, the centre console and the door and side panel trim. The front seats’ integral head restraints feature BMW M stripes, while the Merino rear seats sport CS badging and continue the CS-specific red contrast stitching.

M Sport steering wheel.
The standard M Sport steering wheel finished in black Alcantara, features a red centre marker at the 12 o’clock position to ensure racing drivers feel at home. The distinctive M2 CS badging in the instrument cluster can be seen clearly through the M Sport steering wheel, while Alcantara also adorns the centre-console armrest and an interior trim strip on the instrument panel. The trim strip’s large red CS logo clearly identifies this as the new range-topping car in the BMW M2 line-up.

Standard Specification.
The M2 CS also benefits from a high level of upgraded standard features over and above the M2 Competition. The BMW Icon Adaptive LED headlights with High Beam Assistant ensure a distinctive appearance on the road with hexagonal day time driving lights, whilst the harman/kardon sound system improves the interior audio experience. Sun Protection Glazing is included as standard, rounding off the sporting appearance of the M2 CS.

The BMW M2 CS is available to order today with first orders arriving in Spring 2020. Prices start from £75,320 OTR.

BMW M GmbH is setting an elevated benchmark in the compact high-performance sports car segment. The new BMW M2 Competition represents a complete reworking of a car that, in its original incarnation, was already a class-leading sports car. A new powerplant boasts a substantial jump in power compared to the previous engine, while changes to the steering, braking system, exhaust and suspension are all wrapped in a revised exterior design that has been enhanced for aerodynamic efficiency.

These alterations to the BMW M2 Competition means it can offer unrivalled all round performance in class and post some impressive headline statistics. It accelerates from zero to 62mph in 4.2 seconds (M DCT transmission, 4.4 seconds with manual gearbox), before going on to an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. Upgrade to the optional competition-focused M Driver’s Package and that top speed increases to 170mph. Revised chassis tuning and an upgraded brake system means it handles sharper than the original M2.

There are some visual differences that set the Competition model apart from the standard M2; a new front spoiler design and kidney grille finished in high-gloss Shadow Line black, which also feature on the side gills on the front wings, and for the redesigned quartet of tailpipes in the twin exhaust system. A dark M Competition badge graces the rear end of the car, while the race-inspired design of the new double-arm door mirrors improve the aerodynamics.

BMW’s M engineers have also adjusted the dynamics to take the increased performance into account, including a carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) high-precision strut from the BMW M3/M4 in the engine compartment. This improves front section rigidity and increases steering precision.

Engine and performance
The twin-turbocharged six-cylinder in-line engine, offers the best of both worlds: It guarantees a unique appetite for revs for a turbocharged engine, offers exceptionally linear power delivery across a broad rev range and possesses a distinctive engine sound.

M TwinPower Turbo technology also provides unbeatable torque, available across a wide rev band. The engine boasts outstanding efficiency, delivering 410hp between 5,250 and 7,000rpm, while peak torque of 550Nm is on tap between 2,350 and 5,200rpm. 

Such explosive power in a small package allows the M2 Competition to complete the zero to 62mph sprint in just 4.2 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 155mph, but can be increased to 170mph with the optional competition-based M Driver’s Package. In addition, fuel economy is very sensible, with 28.5mpg combined with a six-speed manual gearbox (CO2 225g/km), or 30.7mpg with the optional M DCT auto CO2 209g/km).

BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology consists of two rapid-response MonoScroll turbochargers, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing.

The valve and camshaft timing work in tandem for maximum variability of the control intake valve lift, resulting in razor-sharp responses and optimal power delivery.

Fuel consumption and exhaust emissions are also reduced. A ‘closed deck’ design increases crankcase rigidity for the six-cylinder engine and allows cylinder pressures to be increased for optimum power output. Brushless, LDS-coated cylinder bores also lead to a significant reduction in weight. LDS stands for lightbogendrahtspritzen and is a way of spraying a high temperature metal very thinly onto a surface so it is very strong  and durable but its thinness means it produces a lighter surface than previously possible.

Maintaining consistent levels of oil supply is particularly challenging, thanks to the dynamic performance of the BMW M2 Competition, but BMW’s extensive motor racing experience has the chance to shine through. For example, an additional oil sump cover helps to limit the movement of lubricants when the car suddenly changes direction. Under extreme acceleration and deceleration, an oil extraction pump and a sophisticated oil return system situated close to the turbocharger also help to maintain uninterrupted oil circulation. Oil is supplied continuously to all engine components in all driving situations – whether in everyday motoring or hard driving on the track.

The BMW M2 Competition features a range of measures designed to deal with the increased cooling requirements, compared with the engines in previous models. An enlarged BMW kidney and a new front skirt with modified air stream improve the flow for the front of the car.

The car also makes use of the race-tested cooling system of the BMW M4 with the Competition Package, consisting of one central radiator, two side radiators and an additional engine oil cooler. Cars making use of the optional seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) also feature a transmission oil cooler.

This sophisticated system ensures that ideal operating temperatures are maintained on short city journeys during everyday use, as well as out on the racetrack.

In addition to the new engine, the M2 Competition features a completely new exhaust system. The dual-branch design has a new silencer while the four tailpipes, finished in black chrome, mark it out as a BMW M model. Two electronically-controlled flaps ensure that the BMW M2 Competition delivers a distinctive BMW M Sound, which the driver can adjust by selecting a driving mode with M Dynamic Performance Control – by pressing a selector switch on the centre console.

The car comes as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, which stands out with its compact design and low weight. The use of a new type of carbon-fibre friction lining enhances shift comfort and an engagement speed control function, which blips the throttle on downshifts and lowers the engine’s revs on upshifts, makes gear changes even smoother. This also lends the car additional stability during hard driving on the track.

Switching off the DSC deactivates the engagement speed control function. Wet-sump lubrication prevents any sloshing of the transmission oil and ensures all components benefit from an efficient supply of oil.

The seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT with Drivelogic) is available as an option. This system effectively combines two gearboxes, each with its own clutch, and enables either extremely fast gear changes with no interruption in the flow of power or ultra-smooth shifts. The driver can change gear either in automated mode or manually using the gearshift lever on the centre console or shift paddles on the M leather steering wheel. In automatic and manual modes, Drivelogic provides the driver with a choice between preconfigured driving settings: COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+.

In automatic mode, the driver can then adjust the timing of the gearshift as well as its intensity, and the automatic throttle blipping function on downshifts.

Moving between the transmission’s manual modes alters the shift dynamics, but it is the driver who determines the timing of a gear change. The system detects which gear the driver will choose next on the basis of the engine revs, the accelerator position, the level of acceleration and the driving mode, and engages it before the driver has actually moved the shift paddle. As a result, the clutches now only need to open or close for the gear-change to complete. The change of gear is therefore executed in fractions of a second.

The BMW M2 Coupé has already set the standard in its class when it comes to agility, driving feel, directional stability, steering precision and controllability at the limit, without short-changing the driver in everyday use. These characteristics have been further refined for the M2 Competition and adjusted to take the increased engine performance into account.

The engine compartment conceals the most striking component: the CFRP high-precision strut from the BMW M3/M4. This one-piece component is made from extremely light, yet high-strength, carbon fibre and weighs in at just 1.5 kg. Together with the bulkhead strut from the M4, it significantly increases front section rigidity to improve steering behaviour and precision.

The high-performance chassis also draws from the lightweight aluminium construction of the front and rear axles from the BMW M3/M4. In order to ensure precise wheel location, play-free ball joints are used to transmit transverse forces. The longitudinal forces passing through the chassis are passed directly into the torque struts via elastomer bearings.

All the control arms and hubs of the new five-link rear axle are made from forged aluminium. In addition, a racing-derived rigid connection, dispensing with rubber bushes, is used to fix the lightweight steel grid-type rear subframe to the body. This further improves wheel location and tracking stability.

BMW M engineers have adjusted the characteristic curves of the electromechanical power steering to improve performance and increase front section rigidity. The integrated Servotronic function with M-specific characteristics controls the level of steering assistance electronically according to the car’s speed and the settings made with Drivelogic, which allow drivers to adjust power steering assistance at any time to their personal preferences.

The Dynamic Stability Control has been completely recalibrated for the M2 Competition. The electronics exercise even more delicate control, providing improved traction in wet and slippery conditions, and ensuring that traction is not interrupted during drifts.

Support is provided by the Active M Differential, an electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip diff that takes traction and directional stability to a new level of precision and speed. The locking effect can be varied between zero and 100 per cent according to the driving situation and reacts to the car’s steering angle, accelerator position, brake pressure, engine torque, wheel speed and yaw rate.

The control unit uses this analysis of the driving situation to detect the traction loss on one side of the car and calculates the required locking effect, engaged by an electric motor. Full locking power of 2,500Nm is available within 150 milliseconds. This allows the system to prevent a wheel from spinning in extreme conditions on slippery road surfaces or when the two rear wheels are experiencing significant friction differences.

In certain situations, the Active M Differential works actively. When pulling away on slippery surfaces, for example, the lock is closed by a defined percentage even before a wheel can start to spin, to ensure that both wheels develop equal slip at the same time. The lock is also closed by the required percentage through enthusiastically driven corners, according to the levels of lateral acceleration and power delivery.

This prevents the low-traction inside wheel from starting to turn too quickly. This permanent and infinitely variable differential control also increases agility, avoids understeer on the way into corners and improves directional stability under braking and load changes.

M Dynamic Mode (MDM) is a sub-function of Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), which can be activated automatically in SPORT+ mode, or engaged manually.

In track day circumstances, it allows a greater degree of wheel spin, letting the DSC intervene later, and increasing the freedom available to drivers at the dynamic limit. The extra wheel slip enhances traction and therefore propulsion. More significant oversteer and understeer are possible, as are moderate, controlled drifts, but the DSC can still be relied on to intervene in critical situations.

With such high performance, good stopping power is essential. The high-performance M Sport brakes provide maximum performance and are a product of our extensive motorsport experience. Compared to the standard M compound brakes, with brake calipers painted in a blue metallic and perforated inner-vented brake discs, the M Sport brakes have larger pads (front axles: 400mm in diameter, rear axle: 380mm in diameter) and brake calipers (front axles: 6-piston fixed caliper, rear axle: 4-piston fixed caliper), painted grey. These high-performance brakes guarantee excellent deceleration in all conditions and are fade and heat resistant.

The M2 Competition is also the first M2 to be equipped with selector switches on the centre console that allow instant control of the characteristics and settings for the engine, steering and, if M DCT is selected, Drivelogic functions. The various configurations can be combined with one another in whichever way the driver prefers and can be stored for easy access using the M1 and M2 buttons on the steering wheel.

The standard range of equipment now includes a bold red start/stop button front Park Distance Control (PDC).

Design
One of the most distinctive features of the M2 Competition is its new front skirt with modified air intake, which optimises the flow of fresh air to the cooling system, while simultaneously improving the visual presence of the car.

The enlarged BMW kidney grille is painted black, as are the side gills on the front wings. This colour is mirrored in the new design of the four tailpipes, making the M Competition models really stand out. A matching dark M Competition Badge graces the rear end of the car.

The motorsport-inspired double-arm design of the wing mirrors improves the aerodynamics and is a standout characteristic of the M2 Competition.

Two new colours have been added to the range, metallic Sunset Orange and Hockenheim Silver, which is only available on this model.

Inside, the new, M Sport seat is a real highlight in terms of function and form. The bucket-style shape borrows heavily from motorsport and provides drivers with full support, while the headrests are integrated into the seat back rest. The backrest also features an illuminated M2 logo at shoulder height.

The black perforated leather upholstery is available with either blue or orange highlights, while the standard sports seats are also available with black leather upholstery, featuring contrasting stitching in blue or orange. The new standard Y-Spoke 19-inch forged alloy wheels (front axle: 9J x 19, rear axle: 10J x 19) are also available optionally in Jet Black.

Equipment and options
There is no mistaking the M2 Competition, as it greets the driver with an exclusive ‘Competition’ kickplate as soon as they open the door. The dashboard is ergonomically laid out, and reminds the driver they’re in a special car by displaying the M2 Competition logo for a few seconds when the ignition is switched on.

A red start-stop button underlines the motorsport heritage of the car and the M1 and M2 buttons on the steering wheel also provide direct access to the range of driving modes. Drivers can save their own personal configurations chosen from the settings for stability control, engine characteristics and steering - control over the character of the M2 Competition is at their fingertips. The M1 and M2 steering wheel buttons are pre-programmed with a Comfort and a Sport program as standard and drivers can return to these settings at any time.

The evolution from M2 Coupé to M2 Competition also sees a few additional upgrades.

The high-performance coupé now boasts front Park Distance Control (PDC) which monitors the car’s surroundings and keeps an eye on what is in front of the car, as well as to the rear. Whilst the Professional Navigation offers an ultra-sharp map display and the iDrive Touch Controller ensures the various functions are even easier to use.

Electromechanical M Servotronic power steering and the M Dynamic Mode (MDM) for Dynamic Stability Control is available as standard, allowing aspiring racing drivers to easily enjoy controlled drifts on the circuit.

BMW M2 Competition customers can also make use of numerous driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive. The range of optional driver assistance systems includes the Driving Assistant, which comprises features such as Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking function, and Lane Departure Warning.

Speed Limit Info flashes up traffic signs and the permitted top speed, and the driver is warned if overtaking is not allowed. The rear-view camera teams up with rear Park Distance Control to assist drivers with reverse parking and manoeuvring. The Professional Navigation offers an ultra-sharp map display and the iDrive Touch Controller ensures the various functions are even easier to use.

The BMW M2 Competition is available to order from mid-May with prices starting from £49,285. The BMW M2 will sold in solus and not alongside the original M2.

The new BMW M2 is the latest compact sports coupé in a long line of legendary road and racing BMWs, such as the 2002 Turbo, E30 M3 and 1M Coupé.  Cast in a similar mould, it brings the concept right up to date with the latest in motor sport derived technology. The result is a powerful performer that delivers genuine driver satisfaction on the road, and extreme capability on the racing.

Powered by a new, specifically developed, 3.0-litre straight-six engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the latest product from BMW M GmbH produces a formidable 370hp, enabling an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. The BMW M engineers have worked tirelessly to reduce weight wherever possible, improve rigidity and hone the M2’s responses via sophisticated chassis technology and electronics to deliver a truly rewarding drive.

Engine: A true BMW M six-cylinder powerplant
The six-cylinder engine of the new BMW M2 is entirely in keeping with the finest BMW M tradition. It offers unbeatable driving fun on a racing circuit, yet remains completely civilised in everyday use. With an appetite for revs not normally associated with a turbocharged engine, it features an exceptionally linear power delivery and strong torque across a broad rev range, all delivered with a distinctive engine sound. Rapid responses and excellent efficiency are amongst the benefits of BMW’s innovative M TwinPower Turbo technology.

The new 3.0-litre engine possesses an output of 370hp at 6,500rpm and will rev to 7,000rpm, while peak torque of 465Nm is on tap between 1,400 and 5,560rpm. An overboost function raises this figure by 35Nm to 500 Nm between 1,450 and 4,750rpm. Despite this potent performance, the combined fuel consumption is 33.2mpg when fitted with a six-speed manual gearbox, and 35.8mpg with the optional M DCT. The CO2 emissions are 199g/km and 185g/km respectively.

With M DCT fitted and Launch Control activated, the new BMW M2 completes the sprint from rest to 62mph in just 4.3 seconds (4.5 sec with the six-speed manual gearbox). The top speed is electronically limited to 155mph.

This new, lightweight, thermodynamically optimised, all-aluminium unit is very rigid due to its closed-deck design. BMW’s advanced M TwinPower Turbo technology on the M2 comprises of a TwinScroll turbocharger, High Precision Injection, variable camshaft timing (Double-VANOS) and VALVETRONIC variable valve control. The M2’s turbocharger has been integrated into the exhaust manifold, reducing the warm-up phase after a cold start and thereby helping to cut internal friction and significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Components including the pistons were sourced from the BMW M3/M4 engine, as are the crankshaft main bearing shells. In order to ensure oil reaches all engine components at all times under the kind of extreme conditions encountered on a race track, the engine benefits from a modified lubrication system; an additional oil cooler for the transmission oil (on M DCT cars) and a further water cooler for the engine keep temperatures stable.

With its four tailpipes, the M2 is instantly recognisable as a BMW M model and the exhaust’s minimal exhaust back-pressure ensures efficient performance. Added to which, the electrically controlled flap delivers the distinctive BMW M engine soundtrack across the entire rev range without pushing volume levels to their stipulated limits.

Gearbox: Manual gearbox with automatic throttle blipping and M DCT
The new BMW M2 comes as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, featuring dry-sump lubrication and an engagement speed control function that blips the throttle on downshifts and lowers the engine’s revs on upshifts.

An option is the latest generation of the seven-speed M DCT. With this system the driver can change gear either in automated mode or manually using the M gearshift lever on the centre console or shift paddles on the M leather steering wheel. The Drivelogic function tuned to the M DCT offers a choice of six driving programs (three in automatic mode and three in manual mode). The COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+ settings can be activated using the Driving Experience Control switch. The integrated Launch Control function ensures the best possible acceleration off the line in all conditions.

M DCT with Drivelogic offers further specific M functions. For example, Stability Clutch Control (SCC) disengages the clutches when necessary to prevent oversteer and so stabilise the vehicle. The “creep on demand” function allows the driver to prompt the creep effect familiar from conventional automatic transmissions by nudging the accelerator while at a standstill – to manoeuvre out of tight parking spaces, for example. Another integrated feature is the Smokey Burnout function, which allows the driver to indulge in a degree of wheelspin. With DSC off, the system senses the speed of the accelerator pedal movement. Rapid movement will allow a rev increase and the clutch is closed very quickly, allowing a sustained burnout.

Chassis: optimised for the road and the racing circuit
For the new M2, the BMW M GmbH engineers have sought inspiration from the lightweight aluminium front and rear axles of the current BMW M3/M4 models. For example, just the control arms, wheel carriers, axle subframes and stiffening plate of the double-joint spring-strut front axle weigh five kilograms less than would be the case with a conventional steel construction. Further stiffening measures optimise rigidity throughout the car.

All the control arms and wheel carriers of the new BMW M2’s five-link rear axle are made from forged aluminium, which reduces the unsprung masses of the wheel-locating components by around three kilograms compared to a steel construction. In addition, a racing-derived rigid connection, dispensing with rubber bushings, is used to fix the lightweight steel grid-type rear axle subframe to the body.

The development of specific tyres for the new BMW M2 was integral to the project from the outset. The lightweight 19-inch forged wheels (front axle: 9J x 19, rear axle 10J x 19) substantially reduce rotating and unsprung masses. Together with 19-inch tyres (front axle: 245/35 ZR 19, rear axle: 265/35 ZR 19), they make a considerable contribution to the outstanding dynamic properties of the new BMW M2 and, at the same time, ensure impressive ride comfort.

The high-performance brakes of the new BMW M2 are also a product of motor sport and can be quickly identified by their brake callipers (front axle: four-piston fixed callipers, rear axle: two-piston fixed callipers), which are painted in a blue metallic finish and display the M logo at the front axle. In these M compound brakes, fitted as standard on the new BMW M2, the heavily loaded, perforated and inner-vented brake disc ring is made from grey-cast iron (front axle: 380mm in diameter, rear axle: 370mm in diameter), while the brake disc hub is manufactured from aluminium, thus saving weight.

The electrically power-assisted steering system features an integrated Servotronic function with M-specific characteristics that vary with road speed. Two settings – COMFORT and SPORT/SPORT+ allow drivers to adjust the steering’s power assistance at any time.

Meanwhile, an Active M Differential optimises traction and maximises directional stability. This electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip differential has a locking effect that can be varied between 0 and 100 per cent according to the driving situation. Sensors including those of the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system determine the car’s steering angle, accelerator position, brake pressure, engine torque, wheel speed and yaw rate. The control unit uses this analysis of the driving situation to detect the threat of traction loss on one side of the car and calculates the required locking effect, which is engaged by an electric motor. Full locking power is available within 150ms, and the system can even work proactively. An M Dynamic Mode allows more driver autonomy without removing the DSC altogether.

Design: form through function delivers a powerful presence
Characteristic M design elements define the front end of the new BMW M2, which features the signature BMW kidney grille with its BMW M logo. In fact, the large front apron with trapezoidal blades and the Air Curtains in the outer air intakes take inspiration from the iconic BMW 3.0 CSL touring car racer. Thanks to the careful channelling of the airflow around and through elements of the car, drag has been reduced by five per cent compared with the BMW 2 Series Coupé, despite the M2’s stronger cooling performance. The aerodynamic measures have also reduced lift by 35 per cent and significantly improved aerodynamic balance at higher speeds.

Viewed from the side, the compact dimensions and hallmark BMW proportions with classic BMW Hofmeister kink give the M2 an unmistakable profile. Sculptural wing extensions at the front and rear axle (front: 55mm, rear: 80mm) are not only a stylistic statement, but also necessary to accommodate the wider track and wheels.

The broad rear end of the new BMW M2 highlights its firm grip on the asphalt, a quality further reinforced by the horizontal lines in the boot lid and rear apron, the M rear spoiler on the boot lid, and the rear diffuser integrated into the rear apron.

Interior: the perfect driving environment
Sport seats, in black Dakota leather with blue contrast stitching and an M logo in the backrests, have adjustable side bolsters to give the driver and front passenger optimum support through fast corners. An M footrest and kneepad on the centre console for the driver continue the sporting theme. The Interior Comfort Package is also included as standard which includes extended storage, automatic two-zone climate control and extended lighting.

Instruments with BMW M2-specific dials and needles, a speedometer scale reaching round to 186mph and a rev counter reading up to 8,000rpm provide an indication of the car’s extraordinary performance potential as soon as you climb aboard. Familiar M equipment items in the new BMW M2 also include M logos on the rev counter, gearshift lever, door sill plates and an M leather steering wheel with shift paddles.

Equipment: fully performance capable with high tech options
The new BMW M2 comes with an extensive range of equipment from the factory including Professional Navigation system and Xenon headlights as standard. Customers can also add further individual touches to their car with a select range of options. The new BMW M2 is available in four exterior paint finishes at no extra cost (Long Beach Blue metallic, Alpine White, Black Sapphire metallic and Mineral Grey metallic).

Innovative driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive are also options. ConnectedDrive Services open up the world of vehicle connectivity to customers, revealing intelligent services and features as well as an extensive range of apps. The GoPro video app is a case in point, likewise the M Laptimer app from BMW M GmbH, which drivers can use to improve their driving style on the track precisely as required. Access to e-mail, weather information and news is possible via the car’s integrated SIM card. Online Entertainment opens up access to more than 22 million music titles and over 200 internet radio channels.

Heritage: The legends of BMW M GmbH
The new BMW M2 sees BMW M GmbH building on the success of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé. It continues the tradition of the legendary original BMW M3 – the E30 from 1986 – a car famed for its blend of agility and precision, as well as its supremacy on the racing circuit and rally stage. Looking further back, the M2 can also be seen as a close descendant of a car from 40 years ago: the BMW 2002 turbo.

First shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the BMW 2002 turbo was the first mass-produced turbocharged car offered for sale in Germany. The BMW engineers employed a Kugelfischer fuel injection system and KKK turbocharger to extract a tidy 170hp from the two-litre four-cylinder engine, enough to power the BMW 2002 turbo from zero to 62mph in 6.9 seconds.

With its large front spoiler, bolted-on plastic wing extensions and a spoiler lip on the boot lid signalled the impressive dynamic potential of the BMW 2002 turbo. The interior likewise upped its game to reflect the requirements of keen drivers.

The BMW 2002 turbo led the way in the 1970s in terms of driving dynamics with its cutting-edge suspension featuring a MacPherson front axle, a semi-trailing arm rear axle, anti-roll bars front and rear and inner-vented front disc brakes.

A total of 1,672 units of the BMW 2002 turbo were built between October 1973 and June 1975.

Another descendant of the M2 and most iconic racing BMW of all time is the original BMW M3 (E30), the sports version of the compact BMW 3 Series range. The 4.36-metre long, two-door car was conceived as a homologation model for the German Touring Car Championship and wore its ambitious sporting intentions proudly on its sleeve.

It won the World Touring Car Championship in its first season on the race track, while many more championship titles and countless individual wins mean the E30 BMW M3 Group A remains the world’s most successful touring car racer to this day. Four wins in a row at the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, for example, stand as testament to this. By mid-1991 around 18,000 units of the original BMW M3, which was also available in convertible form from 1988, had been built.

The closest brother to the BMW M2, the BMW 1 Series M Coupé arrived in 2011. It was the first M car based on the BMW 1 Series and was limited to 450 cars in the UK.

The BMW 1 Series M Coupé was powered by a three-litre six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and developed an output of 340hp and peak torque of 450Nm. The zero to 62 mph sprint was all over in just 4.9 seconds and top speed was an electronically-limited 155 mph.

The BMW 1 Series M Coupé came as standard with lightweight M Sport suspension, a mechanical differential lock with up to 100 per cent locking effect, M compound brakes and 19-inch aluminium wheels with mixed-size tyres. Track width was increased over the standard BMW 1 Series Coupé by 60mm at the front and 40mm at the rear.

Body style changes to the BMW 1 Series M Coupé included a new front apron with larger air intakes in response to the car’s increased cooling requirement, as well as wing extensions and a new rear apron. The interior was upgraded in familiar M style with leather-covered M sports seats, an M sports steering wheel, interior trim strips in Alcantara and BMW M logos.

Munich. The new BMW M2 Coupé (combined fuel consumption: 8.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 199 g/km)* sets the benchmark in the segment of compact high-performance sports cars when it comes to driving dynamics and performance. Its extrovert design further underscores the car’s highly dynamic character and outstanding suitability for the race track. From March 2016, the dynamic qualities and the visual appearance of the BMW M2 Coupé can be further enhanced with the newly presented range of BMW M Performance Parts. They comprise components derived from motor racing for the areas of aerodynamics, engine, cockpit and suspension which meet the very highest standards in terms of functionality and design.

Aerodynamic components for an improved appearance and driving response.
The M Performance Parts product portfolio features a particularly extensive range of aerodynamic components made of carbon-reinforced plastic (CFRP or carbon fibre). These include front and side sill attachments, rear diffuser and mirror caps that are perfectly harmonised in their aerodynamic effect and additionally emphasise the powerful exterior design of the compact high-performance sports car.

The front and side sill attachments in combination with the rear spoiler and diffuser from the BMW M Performance range optimize the airflow around the vehicle, for example, which in turn impacts positively on handling and driving performance. Matching these there are carbon fibre exterior mirror caps which stylishly round off the car’s enhanced sporty appearance with their striking look. The same applies to the M Performance radiator grille for the front and side in high-gloss black with integrated BMW M logo in the BMW M colours red, blue and light blue.

Options for engine, suspension and brakes that enhance dynamic performance.
The M Performance flap silencer system makes for more intense perception of the engine sound. Its two operating modes Sport and Track can be set by Bluetooth remote control. The Sport mode is intended for use on public roads and indulges the driver with a distinctive sporty sound that has been specially harmonised with the BMW M2. Meanwhile the Track setting further intensifies the volume and character of the exhaust sound, perceptibly enhancing its emotional flair. This creates a much more intense driving experience and makes the driver feel more closely connected to the car. The M Performance flap exhaust system further enhances the BMW M2 visually, too, with its high-gloss silencer unit including deep-embossed M Performance logo, tailpipes with a diameter of 80 millimetres and perforated inner pipe. As an alternative there are also carbon fibre tailpipe trim elements available for the M Performance exhaust system with a diameter of 93 millimetres and integrated BMW M logo.

The BMW M2 Coupé can be fitted with the BMW M Performance coil-spring suspension so as to optimise road holding and handling. This reduces ground clearance by at least five millimetres as compared to the standard suspension. And the coil-spring technology can be used to lower the vehicle by an additional 20 millimetres. What is more, the shock absorbers can be adjusted to 16 levels in the rebound stage and 12 in the compression stage. This means the driver can create his own suspension set-up according to personal preference. Whichever setting is selected, the tighter basic set-up as compared to the standard suspension reduces the pitch and roll movements of the vehicle superstructure, thereby ensuring a highly neutral driving response and maximum direct feedback to the driver.

The BMW M Performance sports brake pads offer increased suitability for the race track as well as enhanced active safety. Their composition is derived from the long-distance brake pads that have become well-established in motor racing. This means the BMW M Performance sports brake pads have a particularly high resistance to thermal stress and do not show any fading tendencies even when constantly subjected to extreme use. They also offer an improved, more direct response as compared to the standard brake system.

Options for the interior inspired by motor racing.
The interior of the BMW M2 Coupé can also be given a definite touch of personal sporty style with the addition of BMW M Performance Parts. For example, the BMW M Performance LED door sill cover strips for the driver and passenger side add a stylish and striking accentuation directly as the door is opened. The same applies to the M Performance floor mats, which are not only sporty in design but also offer optimum grip due to their non-slip surfaces made of rubber and textile fibre. The stainless steel pedal covers are a perfect match here: with their pronounced rubber profiles they effectively prevent the foot from slipping off the brake and clutch pedal.

BMW is one of very few automobile manufacturers in the world to offer its own steering wheels with Alcantara cover for retrofit purposes, and the BMW M Performance range actually includes two different models. The M Performance Pro steering wheel with grip areas covered in Alcantara is particularly marked in its shaping and generally has a harder foam body than the standard steering wheel, resulting in better grip and a more precise steering feel. It also has a light blue central marking at the 12 o’clock position. The three-colour M seam and the optional open-pore carbon fibre trim element with M Performance inscription give the M Performance Pro steering wheel an especially attractive visual appearance.

In addition, BMW offers the M Performance steering wheel with race display and carbon fibre trim as standard. With an integrated function display in the upper steering wheel rim, the driver always has a perfect view of information such as section and lap times, longitudinal and transverse acceleration. The functions are intuitively controlled by menu buttons integrated in the thumb recesses of the steering wheel. In addition to the race display there is also a gear shift indicator: two bi-colour LED light strips on the right and left that run towards each other.

The BMW Performance range for the interior is rounded off with the M Performance Interior Kit Carbon, featuring trim elements for the twin-clutch transmission gear selector level, centre console and handbrake handle and the M Performance interior trim finishers with their especially attractive blend of Alcantara and carbon fibre.

BMW, one of the world’s most successful premium carmakers, also boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment it first entered 30 years ago. Around one in three BMW cars sold around the world is now equipped with the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system. BMW’s success in this segment has been driven not only by the ever-popular BMW X models but also by all-wheel-drive models based on the other model series, from the BMW 1 Series to the BMW 7 Series. Across these model series, a large choice of AWD models is offered in a wide range of engine versions. At the same time, BMW continues to refine this technology and take it in new directions. By offering BMW xDrive in combination with a hybrid drive and with a front-wheel-drive platform, the company has repeatedly demonstrated its proficiency in the all-wheel-drive field, proficiency that will secure BMW’s position at the forefront of this sector well into the future. Today, BMW offers more than 110 models – of either transmission type – with BMW xDrive in 12 different model series, as well as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car and the compact BMW 225xe with electrified all-wheel drive.

The focus from day one: traction and dynamics.
BMW’s first foray into the all-wheel-drive market came with the unveiling of the BMW 325i “Allrad” at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in 1985. From the outside, the newcomer didn’t immediately reveal its inner qualities, so its performance when the journalists took it out on the test track was even more of an eye-opener. This very first BMW all-wheel-drive system not only improved traction away from surfaced roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also made for more dynamic handling through corners. “The new BMW is the new champion when it comes to handling,” was the verdict of the testers from German car magazine Auto Zeitung not long after the first unveiling.

Today, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system takes typical BMW driving dynamics to new levels. The current generation of this system is controlled by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM) system, which ensures that xDrive always responds appropriately at the earliest possible moment, based on reliable sensing and monitoring of the current driving situation. The interventions may be performed either entirely by BMW xDrive, or by xDrive in combination with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Performance Control (DPC). The resulting fast and precise control of drive power distribution ensures typical BMW handling characteristics even under extremely dynamic cornering.

The all-wheel-drive system is biased towards the typical BMW rear-wheel-drive characteristics. That is to say, on the all-wheel-drive models a greater share of the drive power is sent to the rear wheels, even under normal driving conditions. This maintains the typical BMW precise steering response, with virtually no torque steer. For crisp turn-in and high tracking stability, the latest-generation BMW xDrive system starts increasing the amount of power sent to the rear wheels as soon as the vehicle enters a corner, further enhancing the driving pleasure for which BMW is a byword.

BMW all-wheel-drive technology: continuous evolution since 1985.
The full-time all-wheel-drive system featured on the BMW 325i “Allrad” of 1985 split the drive power in a ratio of 37 to 63 per cent between the front and rear wheels. In response to wheel speed differences, visco locks in the transfer case and rear differential were capable of providing a virtually rigid connection between the front and rear wheels, in order to improve traction and stability. This model’s name was soon changed to BMW 325iX, and from 1988 it was offered in a “touring” version as well (lower-case spelling up to and including the E46 series).

1991: BMW 525iX.
Three years on, BMW introduced an all-wheel-drive model in the BMW 5 Series too. For the first time, the power split was now electronically controlled. The newly developed system featured multi-plate clutches that allowed the default 36:64 front-to-rear power split to be varied seamlessly and automatically in line with driving conditions. Initially a hydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch was used at the rear axle, but this was later replaced by electronically controlled selective braking intervention. The system monitored the driving situation using wheel speed signals from the Anti-lock Braking System, supplemented by further information about brake status, engine speed and throttle valve position.

From the outset the all-wheel-drive system of the BMW 525iX was a class apart. The electronic control system delivered a very fast and precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered in both Sedan and touring versions.

1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.
In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of 38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X (Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle challenging conditions off the beaten track.

In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept, there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series.

2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.
Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only premium model in its class for years to come.

The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.

In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.

2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid drive.
With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile, in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the all-wheel-drive market.

2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.

BMW xDrive also available for other model series.
The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision, BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7 Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6 Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5 Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe models of the new BMW 4 Series.

Driving progress ever forward.
BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new front-wheel-drive format.

With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system. This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the front wheels.

Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.
BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.
In September 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This high-end BMW luxury model pioneers groundbreaking innovations on all fronts, and will be available with BMW xDrive from its market launch in October. The new luxury sedan will also be the first model to allow intelligent all-wheel-drive to be combined with Integral Active Steering – that is to say with passively steering rear wheels.
