Munich. The fine-dining restaurant THE CLOUD by Käfer
at BMW Welt has been awarded with two Michelin stars by the “Michelin
Guide”. Just one year after opening, this prestigious accolade
celebrates the culinary signature of chef de cuisine Jens Madsen,
restaurant manager Mona Röthig, sommelier Luigi Pecchia and the entire
team. With its concept of “CULINARY NOMADISM”, THE CLOUD by Käfer
brings together international influences, meticulous craftsmanship and
an exclusive dining experience under the roof of BMW Welt.

“The Michelin Guide” defines a two-star restaurant as “Table
excellente, mérite un détour”; in English: “excellent cooking, worth a
detour”. This definition now also officially applies to THE CLOUD by
Käfer at BMW Welt. Also winning the “Opening Of The Year” award, the
fine-dining restaurant demonstrates that its concept has struck
exactly the right note: “CULINARY NOMADISM” – a culinary journey.

“The two Michelin stars are a great honour for our entire team. We
are delighted by this recognition, yet we remain focused on what
matters most to us every day: working creatively and with
concentration, treating high-quality products with respect, and
creating a special experience for our guests,” commented Jens Madsen,
chef de cuisine of THE CLOUD by Käfer, following the announcement.

“We warmly congratulate Jens Madsen, Luigi Pecchia, Mona Röthig and
the entire team at THE CLOUD by Käfer on this very special honour. The
two Michelin stars recognise the team's outstanding culinary
achievement and confirms the high standards that have shaped an
exceptional fine-dining experience at BMW Welt in collaboration with
Käfer and Designworks. We are really looking forward to Season II, as
THE CLOUD by Käfer continues its culinary journey,” added Sandra
Wittemer, head of BMW Welt.

From 8 July 2026, THE CLOUD by Käfer at BMW Welt will embark on its
second culinary journey, entitled “SEASON II – WHISPERS OF THE
RAINFOREST”. The new menu draws inspiration from a journey supported
by the BMW Group, during which chef de cuisine Jens Madsen travelled
deep into the Amazon region. There, he immersed himself in ancestral
techniques, indigenous produce and a deeply respectful approach to
resources. At THE CLOUD by Käfer, he translates these impressions into
a distinctive culinary signature – characterised by local ingredients,
masterful execution and a profound respect for origins and context.

The fine-dining experience at THE CLOUD by Käfer is complemented by
exclusive services offered by BMW Welt – the so-called “BMW Welt
Signatures”. These include a private shuttle service in a BMW 7 Series
across the Munich area, valet parking and the opportunity to book an
exclusive guided tour of BMW Welt.

The team at THE CLOUD by Käfer has already received several
distinctions this year. Jens Madsen was recognised for his vision by
German-language restaurant guide “Der Große Guide” as Best Newcomer.
Culinary magazine “DER FEINSCHMECKER” also named sommelier Luigi
Pecchia among Germany’s most promising young talents in its "Top
30 Under 30” special. THE CLOUD by Käfer at BMW Welt also featured in
the “Condé Nast Traveller Hot List 2026” as part of a highly
international and creative selection of restaurants.

About Käfer

In October 2012, the world of Käfer arrived at BMW Welt, where it
operates the CooperS bistro, the Biker’s Lodge café, the Bavarie
restaurant, and the fine-dining restaurant THE CLOUD by Käfer. Käfer
developed a bespoke culinary concept for this new partnership,
designed to cater to the diverse visitor groups frequenting Bavaria’s
most popular attraction. From BMW Welt staff and customers collecting
their new cars to Munich families, international tourists, and
discerning gourmets, the various dining venues offer a wide range of
options to suit every taste. Particular emphasis was placed on
ensuring that regional and international elements—befitting the
Munich-based brands BMW and Käfer—go hand in hand to create a unified
concept rooted in sustainability.

About BMW Welt

With its iconic, award-winning architecture, BMW Welt is one of
Bavaria’s most visited attractions and symbolizes the BMW Group’s
innovative strength. Since its opening in 2007, it has welcomed over 2
million visitors annually. Together with the BMW Museum and BMW Group
Classic, it forms an important part of the brand experience in Munich.

BMW Welt unites all BMW Group brands – BMW, BMW M, MINI, Rolls-Royce
Motor Cars, and BMW Motorrad – under one roof. Visitors will find
exhibitions and brand presentations and can pick up new vehicles in a
unique setting. Since its opening, more than 280,000 vehicles have
been delivered.

The event program includes a year-round program of cultural,
artistic, sporting, and entertainment events. BMW Welt’s spaces are
also available for external events. The offerings are complemented by
guided tours, product consultations, and the educational program at
THE CAMPUS for children and families. Several restaurants, including
the fine-dining restaurant THE CLOUD by Käfer, provide culinary options.

Note: This press release is a 1:1 copy of the original issued
by BMW headquarters in Germany. No adaptions have been made to cater
to the UK market.

Munich. BMW Group Plant Munich is approaching the
biggest milestone in the transformation process: series production of
the BMW i3, the second model in the Neue Klasse range, gets underway
here in August. This marks the start of the rollout of the Neue Klasse
within the BMW Group’s global production network.

“We have been making rigorous preparations. With the BMW iFACTORY we
have devised a consistent, strategic framework for our production,”
explains Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management of BMW
AG, Production. “We have paved the way for the upcoming start-ups in
all our plants and have invested heavily in technologies,
digitalisation and AI.”

BMW Group Plant Munich has undergone extensive modernisation in
recent years. The result is a plant that now works even more
efficiently, flexibly and digitally, and is optimally positioned for
the requirements of electric mobility and the Neue Klasse.

But that’s not all: as of 2027, the Munich plant will exclusively
produce all‑electric vehicles and thereby achieve a further boost in
efficiency. This is assisted by proactive planning, close
collaboration with development teams and suppliers, as well as modern
production technology in the new structures. “We have considerably
reduced production costs over recent years. With the start of
production of the BMW i3, we will reduce overall production costs at
the Munich plant by a further 10 per cent, bringing them below the
level of the current vehicle generation,” says Peter Weber, Head of
BMW Group Plant Munich. In addition to optimised production processes
and targeted automation and digitalisation, the new vehicle
architecture of the Neue Klasse also ensures efficiency.

Plant Munich is investing around 650 million euros in its
transformation into a fully electric production site.

Highly efficient production at historic site

Plant Munich has been consistently reinventing itself for more than
100 years – from a location outside the city to today’s site
surrounded by it. The facility has undergone a fundamental process of
redevelopment for the Neue Klasse – with production of up to 1,000
vehicles a day continuing during this period. A new body shop and
state-of-the-art vehicle assembly including new logistics areas were
set up on an area spanning around a third of the plant’s footprint.
Extensive updates have also been made to existing technologies.

Plant manager Peter Weber highlights what the workforce has achieved:
“The people at the factory played an essential role in making this
transformation a success. With their high level of expertise,
enthusiasm and tremendous dedication, our employees have shown that
world-class industrial production is possible even under the toughest
conditions. The BMW i3 is just the beginning – several Neue Klasse
models will be manufactured in Munich in the future, including the BMW
i3 Touring.”

A vision for all technologies: the BMW iFACTORY

The BMW iFACTORY focuses on the areas of efficiency,
sustainability and digitalisation. Within this framework, the
company’s plants around the world are implementing site-specific
solutions and, in so doing, strengthening the company’s resilience as
well as its ability to deliver reliably at any time and worldwide.
This vision has now also been consistently implemented across
all technologies at BMW Group Plant Munich.

“We have rethought the entire value stream from supplier to finished
customer vehicle. We have looked at every single process in detail and
made optimisations. Now our plant is even more efficient, more
flexible and even more digitised than ever before. We are thereby
safeguarding the future viability of the plant,” adds Peter Weber.

In the press shop, steel and aluminium boards are
turned into tens of thousands of components on highly automated press
lines daily. Uniform press and tool standards across the global
production network result in efficiencies on many levels: installation
and integration of the systems are standardised, tools for the presses
can be swapped within the network, and employees can work at various
locations and help each other. An AI-assisted camera system supports
quality control before an underground transport system moves the parts
to the body shop. Output has increased significantly compared with
previous structures. Cuts of steel and aluminium are collected, sorted
and then used to manufacture new steel or aluminium coils.

Plant Munich has set up a new body shop for the Neue
Klasse featuring systems planned and realised using a virtual twin. A
total of 800 new industrial robots take care of the joining processes
here; decreasing the number of joining processes to five reduces
process complexity. With an automation rate of around 98 per cent,
robots perform the majority of standardised processes. Automated
surface inspection (ASI) assists with quality assurance.

In the paint shop at Plant Munich, digital and
AI-assisted systems control central quality processes. Automated
surface inspection (ASI) uses cameras and artificial intelligence to
detect even the most minor deviations on the surface and documents
them digitally. Automated surface processing (ASP) works on the
variations detected directly during the running process. To purify the
exhaust air, the paint shop uses the energy-efficient, electrically
powered eRTO process. This is complemented by heat and energy recovery
as well as water-saving cycles.

What once was the home of engine manufacturing at BMW Group Plant
Munich has become a new assembly
area for the Neue Klasse. The assembly area is set
up for end-to-end digital processes: vehicles, systems and tools are
interconnected and digital live tracking and automated inline quality
checks support employees in the assembly line process. During assembly
already, the BMW i3 digitally transmits the status of up to
20,000 features to the production system. Ergonomic workstations,
height-adjustable systems and simplified processes lighten the load
for employees, while targeted training supports new digital fields.

Aspart of the transformation, logistics at BMW Group
Plant Munich has focused squarely on efficiency and direct integration
of production. The logistics department at the Munich plant moves
around 2.5 million parts every day; in future around 70 per cent of
these parts will be delivered directly to the assembly workstations.
This will reduce internal transport distances, save space and
accelerate supply to the production lines. This is made possible by a
multi-storey building structure developed specially for the plant’s
city location. Delivery is at ground level and then conveyor
technology transports the parts to the right levels, where they are
distributed directly to the assembly workstations. This enables the
principle of direct delivery to be applied systematically even in a
multi-storey plant. At the same time, the level of automation in
logistics has been significantly increased. Automated supply systems,
smart transport robots and driverless transport systems will handle
around 60 per cent of supply tasks in the future. A digital logistics
control station manages all processes centrally, ensuring transparency
and data-driven optimisation.

Unique to Plant Munich is the in-house seat manufacturing
facility. It is a “plant inside a plant” and takes on a
central role for quality assurance and expert evaluation within the
production network. The seats for all versions of the models produced
in Munich are manufactured here and delivered to vehicle assembly
directly and “just in sequence”. The in‑house seat manufacturing
facility is regarded as the benchmark for quality assurance across the
BMW Group. Modern, largely automated processes ensure seamless quality
control. This is complemented by fully automated end-of-line checks,
including for safety-relevant components. The seat manufacturing
facility also systematically strengthens the BMW Group’s in-house
expertise. It serves as a competence centre and innovation hub, tests
new materials, technologies and manufacturing concepts, and supports
the evaluation of costs, quality and production processes – making an
impact far beyond the Munich location.

Global network, regional value creation: high-voltage batteries
and e-drive

With the new assembly plant for high-voltage batteries in
Irlbach‑Straßkirchen (Lower Bavaria, Germany) around 90 minutes away,
the BMW Group is significantly boosting value creation in the Bavaria
region. In keeping with the “local for local” approach,
Irlbach-Straßkirchen will deliver high-voltage Gen6 batteries to the
Munich plant as well as other German locations. Here, the batteries
will be installed in the BMW i3. Manufacture of the high-voltage
batteries combines a rigorous zero-defect approach with the latest
production technologies, which were developed at Bavarian pilot
plants. With seamless inline quality controls, digital twins and the
systematic use of artificial intelligence, the BMW Group is setting
new standards in battery production.

The Gen6 e-motor for the BMW i3 is produced at BMW Group Plant Steyr
in Austria – a location that has been manufacturing drivetrains for
over 40 years. With the first e-motor in the portfolio, the plant is
developing its role as a prime example of technology openness. All
core components of the highly integrated e-drive – from the rotor and
stator to the inverter and transmission – are produced on-site. New
production lines and state‑of‑the‑art clean room environments have
been set up for this. The aluminium foundry at BMW Group Plant
Landshut supplies the e-motor housing for Plant Steyr.

Munich. The BMW Group is consistently advancing the
digitalisation and use of artificial intelligence in production. A key
element in this effort is “Physical AI”, which combines digital
artificial intelligence (AI) with real machines and robots. This
enables intelligent systems such as humanoid robots to be integrated
into real-world production processes.

For the first time, the BMW Group is now bringing Physical AI to
Europe and launching a pilot project with humanoid robots at the
Leipzig plant. The project aims to integrate humanoid robotics into
existing series production of cars and to explore further applications
in the production of batteries and components.

“Digitalisation improves the competitiveness of our production –
here in Europe and worldwide. The symbiosis of engineering expertise
and artificial intelligence opens up entirely new possibilities in
production,” said Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management
of BMW AG, Production.

Last year, the BMW Group successfully implemented a pilot
project with humanoid robots at its Spartanburg plant in the United
States. The insights gained from this project are being leveraged to
further develop and scale Physical AI applications.

Unified IT and data model in the production
system
Artificial intelligence is already an integral
part of the BMW Group’s production system. From the virtual factory
with digital twins and AI‑enabled quality controls to intralogistics
with autonomous transport solutions, intelligent systems are used in
almost all production steps.

A prerequisite for the effective use of artificial intelligence
in production is a unified IT and data model across the entire
production system. The BMW Group has consistently transformed isolated
data silos into a unified data platform in its production system
meaning that all data is consistent, standardised, and available at
all times. This enables digital AI agents to take on increasingly
challenging tasks autonomously and in complex environments while
continuously learning and becoming available for additional areas of
application. The introduction of intelligent and autonomous
decision‑making agents marks a paradigm shift in production. In
combination with robots, these digital AI agents are what make up
Physical AI.

“Our aim is to be a technology leader and to integrate new
technologies into production at an early stage. Pilot projects help us
to test and further develop the use of Physical AI – that is,
AI‑enabled robots capable of learning – under real-world industrial
conditions,” said Michael Nikolaides, Senior Vice President Production
Network, Supply Chain Management at BMW Group.

Digitalisation and artificial intelligence are core elements of
BMW iFACTORY and are the foundation for future‑proof, flexible, and
competitive production.

Humanoid robotics complements existing
automation
The BMW Group is strategically expanding its
automation portfolio to include Physical AI and humanoid robotics.
Humanoid robots are viewed as a value‑adding complement to existing
automation. Particularly, they demonstrate potential in monotonous,
ergonomically demanding, or safety‑critical tasks. The goal is to
relieve employees and further improve working conditions.

Center of Competence for Physical AI in Production
consolidates expertise
Its consistent data platform in
production makes the BMW Group an attractive partner for technology
companies seeking to test the possibilities of Physical AI –
particularly humanoid robotics – in an industrial environment under
real-world conditions. By setting up the new “Center of Competence for
Physical AI in Production”, the BMW Group is taking the next step in
consolidating its expertise and ensuring that the full range of
knowledge can be leveraged across the organisation.

The BMW Group is following a clearly structured approach.
Technology partners are evaluated according to defined maturity and
industrialisation criteria and tested in pilot projects under
real-world production conditions. Following a theoretical assessment,
an evaluation is carried out at the manufacturer’s site in the
laboratory using real use cases from the BMW production system to test
integration capability. If this phase is successful, it is followed by
an initial test deployment under real-world production conditions at a
BMW Group plant and subsequently the actual pilot phase.

First pilot project with humanoid robots in
Europe
In collaboration with Hexagon, a long‑standing,
established partner of the BMW Group in the field of sensor technology
and software, the first pilot project in Europe is now underway.
Hexagon’s organisational unit located in Zürich, Hexagon Robotics,
specialises in Physical AI and presented its first humanoid robot,
AEON, in June 2025. Following an initial theoretical evaluation phase
and successful laboratory tests, there was an initial test deployment
at BMW Group Plant Leipzig in December 2025. A further test deployment
is planned from April 2026 to ensure full integration for the actual
pilot phase starting in summer 2026.

The deployment in Leipzig is focusing on testing a
multifunctional application of the robot. It is based on AEON’s
design, whose human‑like body allows a wide range of hand and gripper
elements or scanning tools to be flexibly attached and enables dynamic
use on wheels. During testing and later in the pilot phase, the robot
will be used in the assembly of high‑voltage batteries and in
component manufacturing.

Successful pilot at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg provides key
insights for use of humanoid robots in production
The
world’s first deployment of humanoid robots at a BMW Group plant took
place at the Spartanburg plant in the United States in 2025, in
collaboration with the technology company Figure AI. The results
demonstrated that Physical AI can deliver measurable added value under
real-world conditions. Within ten months, the robot Figure 02
supported the production of more than 30,000 BMW X3, working ten-hour
shifts daily from Monday to Friday. Figure 02 handled the precise
removal and positioning of sheet metal parts for the welding process –
a task that is particularly demanding in terms of speed and accuracy
while also being physically exhausting. In total, it moved more than
90,000 components and covered approximately 1.2 million steps in
around 1,250 operating hours.

The pilot confirmed that humanoid robots can safely perform
precise, repetitive work steps – such as positioning components with
millimetre precision – and provided important insights for the further
deployment of Physical AI in production.

During the initial test phases with Figure 02, it was essential
to involve all areas of the production IT infrastructure, occupational
safety, production process management, and shop floor logistics at an
early stage.

One key finding was that the transition from the laboratory to
the actual production environment was faster than expected. Motion
sequences trained in the laboratory could be quickly transferred into
stable shift operation. To ensure smooth coexistence with existing
systems, integration into the BMW Smart Robotics ecosystem was
implemented via standardised interfaces.

The body shop was deliberately selected for the test phase in
Spartanburg, as it already has a high degree of automation. BMW Group
employees in this area have extensive experience in integrating new
technologies and processes. For example, material supply on the line
is already carried out almost exclusively via automated smart
transport robots (STR). The project team’s early communication ensured
transparency from the outset and promoted acceptance. The deployment
of humanoid robots was met with great interest among employees and
quickly became a natural part of everyday work during the course of
the project.

The BMW Group and Figure are currently evaluating additional use
cases for deploying the Figure 03 robot.
Note: This press release is a 1:1 copy of the original issued
by BMW headquarters in Germany. No adaptions have been made to cater
to the UK market.

Munich. The BMW Group is building a Cell Recycling
Competence Centre (CRCC) for battery cells in Kirchroth, in the
Straubing-Bogen district of Lower Bavaria, where it will implement a
process referred to as “direct recycling”. This innovative procedure
enables residual materials from battery cell production, as well as
whole battery cells, to be mechanically dismantled into their valuable
components. The recovered raw materials are then directly reused in
pilot production of battery cells at the company’s own Battery Cell
Competence Centres.

“The new Cell Recycling Competence Centre brings another element to
our in-house expertise: From development and pilot production to
recycling, we are creating a closed loop for battery cells,” says
Markus Fallböhmer, SVP Battery Production at BMW AG, “taking advantage
of the short distances between our Competence Centres in Bavaria.” The
BMW Group is investing around 10 million euros in construction of the
new Competence Centre. Installation work at the building is already
scheduled to begin in the second half of 2025. Once completed,
validation of the recycling method in near-series processes will get underway.

Innovative direct recycling recovers valuable raw materials

Battery cell raw materials – primarily lithium and cobalt, but also
graphite, manganese, nickel and copper – are among the main cost
factors in cell production. Responsible use of these resources is
essential from both environmental and economic perspectives. “The
direct recycling will help reducing the costs for our battery cell
pilot line”, explains Fallböhmer. Unlike conventional methods, the
main characteristic of direct recycling is that raw materials from
battery cells are not reverted to their original state, but are
instead fed back “directly” into the cell production cycle. This
method dispenses with the previously common energy-intensive chemical
or thermal processing. The recycling method was developed by BMW Group
experts at the Competence Centres in Munich and Parsdorf. At the new
CRCC, it will be implemented on a larger scale and, once the processes
are finalised, battery cell material in the mid-double-digit tonne
range can be recycled per year.

Optimal location for new Competence Centre in Bavaria

The BMW Group consolidates its battery cell expertise at its
Competence Centres in Munich and Parsdorf. The Battery Cell Competence
Centre (BCCC) in the north of Munich offers state-of-the-art labs and
research facilities for developing the battery cells for
next-generation high-voltage batteries and producing them in small
quantities. The most promising battery cell from the BCCC will be
scaled up for series processes on a pilot line at the Cell
Manufacturing Competence Centre (CMCC) in Parsdorf. Once completed,
recycling of surplus material from pilot production in Parsdorf will
take place at the new Competence Centre in Kirchroth. The recovered
raw materials will then be reused in cell production in Parsdorf. This
ensures short distances between all Competence Centres and prevents
valuable raw materials from being lost. Following on from the BCCC and
CMCC, the CRCC thus represents the next step in the BMW Group’s
battery cell strategy on the road to the circular economy.

Joint venture operates Competence Center, intellectual
property at the BMW Group

The new CRCC, spanning an area of 2,200 m², will be integrated into
the expansion of an existing building in the Kirchroth-Nord industrial
park, near Straubing. Electrical energy from the discharged cells will
be captured in energy storage systems within the building and used to
operate the recycling systems. The energy concept will be rounded out
by photovoltaic systems installed on the roof of the building. While
the intellectual property for the recycling method is fully owned by
the BMW Group – the Competence Centre will be built and operated by
Encory GmbH. As a joint venture of the BMW Group and Interzero Group,
Encory develops and implements logistics and consulting solutions in
areas such as collection, recycling, and remanufacturing of vehicle
components. Both partners hold a 50% stake in the company. Around 20
people will be employed in the new Competence Center.

Circular economy at the BMW Group

The BMW Group views the circular economy as one of the key issues in
designing more resource-efficient vehicles. The premise is to optimize
the circularity of materials. This means resources are not lost, but
retain their value for long-term use. The BMW Group applies the
principles of Re:Think, Re:Duce, Re:Use and Re:Cycle. From vehicle
design and production, to recycling and reuse, everything is geared
towards ensuring cars can serve as a source of raw materials for new
vehicles at the end of their use phase. Recycling focuses, in
particular, on the use of innovative methods to recover high-voltage
batteries from electrified vehicles.

Press Contact: Chris Overall
Tel: +447815370990
E-mail: chris.overall@bmw.co.uk

Press Release,Research & Development,Sustainability,Locations,Drive Technologies,Production Plants,Production

Munich. The Neue Klasse will usher in a new era of
fully electric driving at the BMW Group – the success of which will
depend heavily on the production of powerful high-voltage batteries.
That’s why the BMW Group is expanding its production network for the
next generation of high-voltage batteries significantly. “We are
setting up five facilities on three continents to produce our
sixth-generation high-voltage batteries,” explained Milan Nedeljković,
Board Member for Production at BMW AG. Across the globe, the principle
of “local for local” will apply: "Close connection of battery
production with vehicle production is part of our strategy,"
explains Markus Fallböhmer, Senior Vice President of Battery
Production at BMW AG. This helps the BMW Group increase the resilience
of its production.

Battery and vehicle production closely connected

The Neue Klasse will be the first to incorporate the all-new
cylindrical cells. These represent a technological leap by the BMW
Group, offering vastly improved energy density, charging times and
range. They will be assembled in new facilities located as closely as
possible to vehicle plants, in keeping with the principle of “local
for local”. State-of-the-art assembly plants for sixth-generation
high-voltage batteries are currently under construction in
Irlbach-Strasskirchen (Lower Bavaria), Debrecen (Hungary), Woodruff
(near Plant Spartanburg in the US), Shenyang (China) and San Luis
Potosí, Mexico. With the “local for local” approach in place,
production will be able to continue even when unexpected political or
economic events occur. In addition, short distances between battery
and vehicle plants will reduce the carbon footprint of car production.
The BMW Group is also upgrading its existing sites and securing jobs.

Neue Klasse to launch first at Plant Debrecen in 2025

The first Neue Klasse vehicles will be produced at the BMW Group’s
new plant in Debrecen, starting in 2025. High-voltage battery and
vehicle manufacturing will launch in parallel. With the training
centre in Debrecen open since autumn 2023 and the communications
centre in use since February 2024, a large number of employees are
already at work in their offices at the site. The production team,
meanwhile, are preparing for their new jobs at various locations
across the BMW Group production network. This will ensure a smooth
start to pre-series production and a successful series launch in the
second half of 2025.

China to produce the Neue Klasse from 2026

From 2026 Neue Klasse vehicles will also be made by BMW Brilliance
Automotive (BBA) in Shenyang, China. Here, too, the sixth-generation
high-voltage batteries required for the cars will be manufactured
locally. The production hall was completed in November 2023, and the
installation of plant and machinery has been underway since March
2024. The first Chinese-made pre-series batteries will roll off the
production line at the end of this year. Preparing for the launch of
the Neue Klasse, the BMW Group has also set up its largest R&D
network outside Germany, with facilities in Beijing, Shanghai,
Shenyang and Nanjing.

Neue Klasse in Mexico from 2027

At San Luis Potosí in Mexico, additional production capacity is being
established for series production of the Neue Klasse to start in 2027.
Construction of the new high-voltage battery assembly plant started in
May 2024 and will comprise more than 80,000 square metres of
production space when completed. But the integration of battery
assembly is not all that’s changing at Plant San Luis Potosí: the
bodyshop is set to grow to more than 90,000 square metres in total,
while vehicle assembly and logistics spaces will expand by nearly
10,000 square metres. The BMW Group is the first premium OEM to
manufacture fully electric cars and high-voltage batteries in Mexico –
and a pioneer in the industry.

BMW Group Plant Woodruff: High-voltage batteries for Spartanburg

Electromobility is also advancing in South Carolina. BMW Group Plant
Woodruff will cover an area of about 93 hectares and consist of a
technology building, ancillary structures, an energy centre, a staff
restaurant and a fire department. It will create more than 300 new
jobs with the BMW Group. When construction reaches completion in 2026,
Woodruff will assemble high-voltage batteries for fully electric cars
made in nearby Plant Spartanburg. The ground-breaking ceremony for the
first building in Woodruff – the training centre – was in June 2023.

High-voltage batteries from Lower Bavaria

The BMW Group is also going to manufacture high-voltage batteries for
Neue Klasse models in Germany – specifically in Irlbach-Straßkirchen,
in Lower Bavaria. The new facility will supply sixth-generation
high-voltage batteries to German car plants. The BMW Group was granted
permission to build the new high-voltage battery assembly plant in
April 2024 and erected the first of more than 1,000 concrete pillars
for the production hall in late June 2024. The citizens of
Straßkirchen had previously voted in favour of the BMW Group coming to
their area, with a clear majority of over 75 percent in the referendum
of September 2023.

Battery expertise concentrated in Parsdorf and Munich

Prototype battery cells like the ones in the Neue Klasse, launching
in 2025, are already being made at the BMW Group’s Cell Manufacturing
Competence Centre (CMCC) in Parsdorf, just east of Munich. The CMCC
was built to complement the Battery Cell Competence Centre (BCCC) in
the north of the city, where development work is carried out. The CMCC
scales up the best product for series production. Product and process
are uniquely interlinked by the close collaboration across divisions,
between Development, Purchasing and Production. The BMW Group operates
further pre-series plants and pilot lines for future high-voltage
batteries in Munich and the nearby towns of Parsdorf and Hallbergmoos.

Press Contact: Chris Overall
Tel: +447815370990
E-mail: chris.overall@bmw.co.uk

Press Release,Research & Development,Locations,Drive Technologies,Production Plants,Production

Hams Hall, UK. A four-legged robot named ‘SpOTTO’ has
joined the team at BMW Group Plant Hams Hall in the UK. The autonomous
robotic dog scans the plant, supports maintenance and ensures
production processes run smoothly.

Equipped with visual, thermal and acoustic sensors, SpOTTO is
deployed in a number of unique use cases, including collecting
valuable data for the plant's digital twin and serving as a watchdog
and overseeing maintenance of production facilities.

“Virtualization, automation and artificial intelligence are
central pillars of the BMW iFACTORY,” explains Klaus von Moltke,
Senior Vice President of Engine Production at BMW AG. “Bold,
innovative application examples like those at Plant Hams Hall showcase
the full range of possibilities.”

Fully connected digital twin: Big data on three
levels
SpOTTO plays a pivotal role in creating and
refining the plants fully connected digital twin. The digital twin
operates on three levels; on the first, 3D representations of the
entire plant are generated. The second level comprises a large data
layer into which the autonomous robot dog, production facilities and
IT systems at the plant feed all relevant information and on the third
level – the application level – dedicated programmes sort the data
that’s been collected into comprehensible and traceable units.

It is the combination of these three levels that makes the fully
connected digital twin unique. Using apps, experts at Plant Hams Hall
then evaluate and utilise this data for quality assurance and
production planning.

Dirk Dreher, Director of BMW Group Plant Hams Hall, is
delighted, “Thanks to the digital twin we have an enormous quantity of
precise data and evaluations, as well as a real-time picture of
production processes. The project team at Plant Hams Hall has created
unique use cases for our four-legged friend and integrated him
perfectly into our processes.”

A reliable maintenance watchdog
Thanks to its
visual, thermal, and acoustic sensors, SpOTTO is able to perform
numerous maintenance tasks including monitoring the temperature of
manufacturing equipment and recognising if an installation is running
too hot – an early sign of potential component failure. At BMW Group
Plant Hams Hall, SpOTTO also specialises in identifying leaks in the
compressed-air lines used in production. Given that compressed air
requires a substantial amount of energy, detecting leaks quickly can
lower energy consumption.

SpOTTO was created by Boston Dynamics with the product name
‘Spot.’ It is a nimble robot small enough to use indoors, that can
climb stairs and traverse rough terrain with ease. The robot was
renamed SpOTTO by Plant Hams Hall, paying tribute to Gustav Otto - one
of the founders of BMW - and son of Nicolaus Otto, inventor of the
four-stroke internal combustion engine.

In 2023, more than 400,000 engines were produced at Plant Hams
Hall which, alongside SpOTTO, employs around 1,600 people. Before
SpOTTO’s introduction at the plant, a dedicated team tested which
activities the robot dog would be suitable for in a yearlong
development process.

Other potential uses are currently being trialled in the plant’s
Technical Basement, including reading analogue operating controls or
performing complex sequences of movements for accessing hard-to-reach
areas of production. In addition to Hams Hall, other BMW Group plants
are also currently testing the use of robotic dogs.

Working with trusted partners
Marco da Silva,
Head of Spot Product Development at Boston Dynamics explains: “The
working environment at Plant Hams Hall is well suited for industrial
inspections using a quadruped robot like SpOTTO. The robot can easily
take over the completion of numerous, repeatable monitoring tasks so
the plant’s maintenance team can focus on maintenance. We are proud of
the way the robot has been integrated into the plant.”

by BMW headquarters in Germany. No adaptations have been made to
cater for the UK market.

Leipzig. Electrification continues at BMW Group Plant
Leipzig: Four months after launching production of the
combustion-engined MINI Countryman, the all-electric version is now
rolling off the lines at Leipzig as well. After phasing out production
of the BMW i3, the birthplace of electric mobility at the BMW Group
has welcomed another fully electric car to its range. It now
manufactures four models with three drive types by two brands, all on
a single production line: the BMW 1 Series, the BMW 2 Series Active
Tourer (including the plug-in hybrid version), the BMW 2 Series Gran
Coupe and the MINI Countryman in both its fully electric and
combustion-powered versions.

The MINI Countryman Electric represents a major step in the MINI
brand’s transition to full electrification by 2030 and combines an
electrified go-kart feel with zero local emissions mobility. It comes
in two fully electric variants: the Countryman E (150 kW, 204 hp |
electricity consumption 17.4 – 15.7 kWh/62 miles | CO2 emissions 0
g/mile) and the more powerful all-wheel Countryman SE ALL4 (230 kW,
313 hp | electricity consumption 18.5 – 16.8 kWh/62 miles | CO2
emissions 0 g/mile).

Consistent plant upgrades and flexible production system

To enable production of up to 350,000 units a year – 100,000 more
than previously – Plant Leipzig has been continuously upgraded since
2018, with extensive additions and upgrades to the bodyshop,
paintshop, assembly and logistics. “Our cars and components are very
much in demand. In recent years the BMW Group has invested around 1.6
billion euros in the Leipzig site to produce additional vehicles and
electric components, and now we’re increasing vehicle volumes too –
which is great news for our plant,” said Petra Peterhänsel, Plant Director.

The main driver behind the volume increase is the MINI Countryman.
During the course of 2024, output will rise to almost 500 units a day
– on top of the 800 or so BMW vehicles the plant is producing. What’s
more, thanks to its flexible production system, Plant Leipzig is in a
position to respond quickly to customer demand, for example by
increasing the share of fully electric vehicles.

Flexible assembly structures also meant the MINI Countryman Electric
could be integrated seamlessly into production. The situation is
similar with the different drive units, which are all produced on one
and the same line in aggregate assembly and prepared for what’s known
as “marriage” with the body. The e-drives, transmissions and control
electronics (collectively known as the highly integrated electric
drive topology, or HEAT) for the two all-electric models are connected
directly in the plant. A new production line was required only for the
control electronics.

More staff and nightshifts for increased production volume

Higher production volume means secure employment and up to 900
additional employees in vehicle production alone. By the end of 2024,
Plant Leipzig will employ around 7,000 BMW staff. Working hours will
need to be adjusted in all technologies, with nightshifts in assembly
starting for the first time in September of this year and cars being
produced round the clock in three shifts.

“Plant Leipzig first went on stream in 2005 with about 2,600
employees in production. 19 years later there are over 7,000. Over the
years, the plant has grown steadily and considerably. The start of
nightshifts in assembly represents another important milestone in the
success story of our plant and is a clear show of confidence by our
company in our site here in Leipzig,” emphasised Works Council
Chairman Jens Köhler.

Made at Plant Leipzig: high-voltage batteries for the MINI
Countryman Electric

With the production launch of the MINI Countryman Electric, all three
stages of the Gen 5 high-voltage battery production process are now
represented at BMW Group Plant Leipzig: cell coating, module
production and battery assembly. Operations in all three are currently
ramping up, with five cell-coating, three module-production and two
high-voltage battery-production lines now in place.

“We are in the middle of the transformation to e-mobility,” said
Markus Fallböhmer, Head of Battery Production at the BMW Group.
“Starting this year, Plant Leipzig will carry out every stage of our
in-house high-voltage battery production process. It’s our next great
step forwards.”

Plant Leipzig’s e-component production capacity has been increasing
since 2021. It will now manufacture not just the high-voltage
batteries for the MINI Countryman Electric but also e-components for
the BMW iX1, BMW iX2, BMW i4, BMW i5 and BMW iX made at other sites.
The e-component production unit at Leipzig currently employs some
1,000 people.

To enable production of high-voltage batteries, spaces previously
used for the BMW i3 and BMW i8 have been converted and new buildings
added. One of them is a new hall with a footprint of about 61,000
m2. This houses two lines capable of producing up to
300,000 high-voltage batteries a year. The BMW Group has invested over
900 million euros in e-component production at Plant Leipzig to date.

Resource-saving painting processes

At launch, the fully electric MINI Countryman comes in three
additional body colours: British Racing Green, Chili Red and Blazing
Blue – and with MINI’s trademark contrast roof, if desired. This is
painted using a new overspray-free method that saves resources and is
currently being readied for series operation. The term “overspray”
refers to the mist of excess paint particles that forms when bodies
are painted the conventional way. With the new technique, this mist no
longer occurs. This makes it easier to paint in multiple colours as
the laborious process of masking is no longer required. Overspray-free
painting also helps save CO2 emissions, as exhaust from the
cabin requires less cleansing. In addition, it requires considerably
less conditioned air, i.e. air that is brought to the exact
temperature and humidity required for painting. As a result, less
energy is needed to temper air and treat exhaust.

The burner technology used to dry the paint on contrast roofs was
also converted for the start of MINI Countryman production and now
consists of a bivalent system. The fuel-flexible burners can run on
hydrogen (H2) as well as gas (methane, CH4) and even switch between
the two while in operation. Five such bivalent hydrogen-capable
burners are used to produce the contrast roofs for the MINI Countryman.

Further burners in the paintshop will also gradually switch to
bivalent operations, with the next six hydrogen-capable burners just
installed. This makes Leipzig a pioneer in the automotive industry and
takes it ever closer to lower CO2 emissions. “Our vision at
Plant Leipzig is to decarbonise production as far as possible
by replacing fossil fuels with green hydrogen,” said Petra
Peterhänsel, explaining the long-term focus of the facility. This will
require sufficient green hydrogen from a grid. A regional hydrogen
grid is currently in planning, with Plant Leipzig set to benefit.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

Munich. A new era is dawning for BMW Group Plant
Munich: from 2026, the iconic parent plant will produce the Neue
Klasse sedan. Just one year later, the factory will manufacture
nothing but all-electric models, making the Munich plant the first
location in the BMW Group’s existing production network to have
successfully completed the transformation to E-mobility from the end
of 2027.

“The Munich plant is an excellent example of our ability to adapt. We
are investing € 650 million here and will produce exclusively
all-electric vehicles in our parent plant from the end of 2027,” says
Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG,
Production. “Last year alone, six all-electric models went into
production. At the same time, we also set a production record, proving
that we are simultaneously able to both deliver and shape the future
in our production network.”

Peter Weber, Director BMW Group Plant Munich, adds: “Munich is the
beating heart of BMW. The plant in Munich is innovative and adaptable.
As in the 1960s, a Neue Klasse is again laying the foundation, on
which our plant is reinventing itself. The fact that this
comprehensive transformation is taking place at the same time as
roughly 1,000 vehicles per day are currently being manufactured is
common practice in Munich and is possible thanks to the outstanding
performance of all our employees. We are delighted to be guiding the
Munich plant into a fully-electric future – starting with the Neue
Klasse sedan.”

Smooth transition to electromobility, as the era of combustion
automobiles from Munich ends in 2027

BMW Group Plant Munich is a prime example of the fluent transition to
the era of electromobility. In 2015, the first plug-in hybrid models
from the BMW 3 Series were manufactured on the same production line as
combustion vehicles. In 2021, the BMW i4 became the first all-electric
vehicle to be produced on the same production line. Nowadays, every
second vehicle that rolls off the production line has an all-electric
drive system.

From 2026, production of the Neue Klasse in the Munich plant will
initially run parallel to production of current models. A good year
later, from the end of 2027, the BMW Group’s parent plant will be the
first existing site in the global production network to manufacture
exclusively all-electric vehicles, having been transformed
accordingly. As such, the era of vehicles with combustion engines in
Munich will draw to a close 75 years after the launch of the BMW 501
in 1952.

After the start in the new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, and in Munich,
the Neue Klasse vehicles will also be produced in Shenyang, China, and
San Luis Potosí in Mexico.

Extensive modifications offer long-term security for location

Over the course of a history stretching back more than 100 years, BMW
Group Plant Munich has undergone many changes and repeatedly
reinvented itself. Together with the conversion from manufacturing
aircraft engines to automobile construction, the successful
introduction of the Neue Klasse in the 1960s is a milestone in the
list of changes throughout the company’s history.

At the moment, multiple large construction sites are evidence of the
turnaround, as they pave the way for the arrival of the Neue Klasse
from 2026. The € 650 million of investment comprises four buildings,
including a new vehicle assembly line with logistics areas and a new
body shop.

In order to create the space within the limited floor space at the
plant in the heart of Munich, the traditional engine manufacturing has
been moved to Hams-Hall in Great Britain and Steyr in Austria after
roughly 70 years at the parent plant. 1,200 employees have been
trained for different production strategies in Munich or have taken up
employment at other locations in the production network.

As in the 1960s and all other changes since, the current
transformation of BMW Group Plant Munich is taking place whilst
production is still ongoing. Regardless of the construction work,
roughly 1,000 cars roll off the production line every day, including
BMW 3 Series and the BMW i4 – all on the same assembly line.

The extensive reorientation of the plant secures a long-term future
for the site in Munich, and is also a significant investment in
Bavaria as an industrial location.

Digitalisation at the Munich plant in accordance with the
principles of BMW iFACTORY

The principles of BMW iFACTORY guarantee the utmost flexibility,
excellent processes and outstanding integrability at all sites within
the BMW Group – from the completely new plant in Debrecen to the
parent plant in Munich, which is over 100 years old and at which the
transformation is in full swing. BMW iFACTORY is synonymous with the
superb production expertise throughout the entire production network.
One important aspect is a comprehensive digitalisation with a holistic
approach to the interaction between people, processes and systems. It
optimises processes and supports employees with their work. The
implementation takes place in three areas: data science, artificial
intelligence (AI) and virtualisation.

Press Contact: Kimberley Ragousis
Tel: +44-1793-551-500
E-mail: kimberley.ragousis@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Research & Development,Locations,Drive Technologies,Production Plants,Production,Munich

Oxford. BMW Group has announced today a new
investment of more than £600 million in the MINI factories at Oxford
and Swindon. “With this new investment we will develop the Oxford
plant for production of the new generation of electric MINIs and set
the path for purely electric car manufacturing in the future,” said
Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG
responsible for production.

The Oxford plant is gearing-up to build two new all-electric
MINI models from 2026, the 3-door MINI Cooper and the compact
crossover MINI Aceman. By 2030 production will be exclusively electric
and the BMW Group will have spent over £3bn on its Swindon, Hams Hall
and Oxford plants since 2000.

This development has been supported by the UK Government and
will help to secure jobs at the Oxford manufacturing plant and at the
body-pressing facility in Swindon.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said “BMW Group’s investment is
another shining example of how the UK is the best place to build cars
of the future. By backing our car manufacturing industry, we are
securing thousands of jobs and growing our economy right across the country.”

Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch said, “This decision
is a big vote of confidence in the UK economy and the work of this
Government to ensure the continued strength of our world-leading
automotive sector. We are proud to be able to support BMW Group’s
investment, which will secure high-quality jobs, strengthen our supply
chains, and boost Britain’s economic growth”.

Oxford to remain the Home of MINI
The Oxford plant celebrated its 110th anniversary this year and
has been successfully producing the current MINI Electric since 2019,
where it is fully integrated into the production line with the
conventional (ICE) models.

Stefanie Wurst, Head of the MINI brand, said, “MINI has always
been aware of its history – Oxford is and remains the heart of the
brand. I am delighted that the two new, fully electric MINI models –
the MINI Cooper and MINI Aceman – are also being produced in Oxford,
thereby confirming our path to a fully electric future. The continuing
high demand for our locally emission-free vehicles shows the openness
of the global MINI community to electromobility, which we will be able
to serve optimally in the future, also thanks to Oxford”.

MINI accelerates toward full electrification with new model
line-up and enhanced production network
The MINI Plant
Oxford currently produces the MINI 3-door, the MINI 5-door as well as
the MINI Clubman and the MINI Electric. From 2024 the plant will start
producing the next generation MINI 3-door and MINI 5-door with
combustion engines, as well as the new MINI Convertible, before they
are joined by the new all-electric vehicles in 2026 – the MINI Cooper
3-door and the MINI Aceman.

The factory will reach a production capacity of around 200,000
cars per year in the medium term, with ICE and battery electric
vehicles (BEVs) initially being built on the same production line.
From 2030, the Oxford Plant will produce all-electric MINI models exclusively.

In a few weeks, production of the new MINI Countryman will begin
at the BMW Group plant Leipzig. This larger crossover model in the
MINI line-up will be offered with both pure electric drive and
combustion engines.

Production of two next generation all-electric MINI Cooper
3-door and Aceman models will begin in China. The new manufacturing
plant in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu Province is part of a joint venture
with Great Wall Motor. Exports will begin in early 2024.

Development of UK plant sites
Today’s investment
announcement will impact all main production areas in Oxford. The
existing production lines will be developed further, with the key
changes being an extension of the current body shop and a new area for
battery installation. Additional logistics facilities will be built on
both the Oxford and Swindon sites.

“I am proud to say that our Oxford and Swindon plants will play
a central role in the BMW Group’s transition to electromobility. We
are determined to continue the historic success story of our plants,
producing the most loved British car brand”, said Markus Grüneisl, CEO
of Plants Oxford and Swindon.

Oxford and Swindon Plants facts and figures
Sustainability is deeply rooted in the BMW Group production
network and so plays a key role at Oxford. A holistic approach aimed
at reducing CO2 emissions and minimising resource consumption
underpins Plant Oxford’s sustainability credentials.

For example, the body shop has one of the largest, roof-mounted
solar farms in the UK. It has more than 11,500 photovoltaic panels and
covers 20,000 square metres, an area equivalent to five football
pitches. It generates enough electricity to power the equivalent of
850 households, over three megawatts, and reduces the plant’s
footprint by approximately 1,500 tonnes of CO2 per year.

MINI Plant Oxford has been at the heart of its community for 110
years and employs over 3,400 highly skilled employees and apprentices,
who together build up to 1,000 MINIs a day - one every 67 seconds. It
is the third biggest vehicle producer in the UK and by the end of this
year, the plant will have produced over 13 million cars bearing the
badges of 14 different brands. Over 500,000 people have worked at this
site over the years.

The Swindon plant was opened in 1955 by Pressed Steel as an
overflow from the Oxford site. Around 600 associates work on three
Blanking and 12 Press lines.

The BMW iFACTORY is the strategic plan overarching all BMW Group
production sites, with the strapline ‘Lean. Green. Digital’. With the
Oxford MINI Plant as a key facility in BMW Group’s transition to
electromobility, it is part of the global BMW iFACTORY approach.

The Oxford and Swindon plants already use digitalisation and
virtual planning tools to configure buildings and systems today,
streamlining the planning of logistics routes and material, traffic
flows and even the movement of employees. The whole of Plant Oxford
and Swindon will be 3D-scanned in minute detail this year to obtain a
full set of digital data of both the building and its systems.
Sokolov/Munich. The BMW Group celebrated the launch
of its new test site in Sokolov (Czechia), the Future Mobility
Development Center (FMDC). With Petr Očko, the Deputy Minister for
Industry and Trade in Czechia, and Petr Kulhánek, the Governor of the
Karlovy Vary region, in attendance, Ilka Hortsmeier, BMW Group’s Board
Member for People and Real Estate, and Frank Weber, BMW Group’s Board
Member for Development, officially opened the test site for fully
automated development and test drives.

As the first development location of its kind in central Europe,
the FMDC, in which 300 million euros have been invested, will play a
key role in the company’s future mobility development. The former
mining region has transformed into an innovation hub employing more
than one hundred skilled workers. The surrounding terrain offers the
best real-world conditions for testing of highly and fully automated
driving and parking to supplement the virtual simulation of driving
situations. Through this combination of virtual simulation and
real-world testing, the BMW Group meets the highest safety
requirements of its customers. The FMDC in Sokolov rounds out BMW’s
existing group of test sites in Aschheim near Munich, Miramas in
France, and Arjeplog in Sweden.

“With our new Future Mobility Development Center, we have
created a one-of-a-kind test site, designed exclusively for the highly
demanding testing of automated driving and parking up to level 4. On
600 hectares of land, we test all possible driving conditions with
maximum flexibility and tremendous efficiency: city, countryside,
freeway, as well as automated parking. The special thing: We can run
our test modules one after the other without stopping. This makes our
testing as realistic, reliable, and customer-oriented as possible,”
said Frank Weber, BMW Board Member for Development.

The new test site not only enables the testing and further
development of technological innovations, but also stands as an
example of how the highest environmental protection and sustainability
standards have been consistently integrated in concept and
implemented. Throughout the planning and establishment of the proving
ground, BMW worked in close cooperation with specialized ecological
construction monitoring.

“Making mobility electric, digital, and sustainable goes beyond
our vehicles at the BMW Group. We look at the entire value chain,
including our own sites. Together with our partners, we were able to
develop a former surface mine site here in Sokolov into a modern and
efficient test site and create new, attractive jobs,” said Ilka
Horstmeier, BMW Board Member for People and Real Estate. “The Future
Mobility Development Center and its charging infrastructure are
supplied with one hundred percent green electricity from renewable
energy sources. This is another step toward the decarbonization of our
sites globally.”

In addition to the use of green electricity, the site is
equipped with an innovative water management system that
systematically collects rainwater and uses it for track irrigation.
The protection and promotion of the local biodiversity were also
considered throughout the planning process: amphibian control systems
were installed throughout the site to ensure the safe crossing of
animals across the proving ground. 2.2 million cubic meters of soil
previously excavated by nearby mining were used to build the site.
Thus, no additional land was sealed, but rather an area that had lain
fallow was recycled for forward-looking technological development.

Press Contact: Dieter Falkensteiner
Tel: +49-89-382-51813
E-mail: dieter.falkensteiner@bmw.de

Press Release,Research & Development,Locations

E-drive trains for 500,000 electrified vehicles per year from 2022

Extensive in-house drive train expertise: Start of production for
fifth-generation high-voltage batteries in Germany

Successful transformation to e-drive train production

Munich/Dingolfing. Production of fifth-generation
high-voltage batteries and battery modules for use in the BMW iX* and
BMW i4 is now underway at the Competence Centre for E-Drive Production
in Dingolfing. At the same time, the company is also increasing
production capacity for its fifth-generation electric motor, which has
been built in Dingolfing for the BMW iX3* since 2020 and will also
power the BMW iX* and BMW i4. “We expect at least 50 percent of the
vehicles we deliver to our customers worldwide to be electrified by
2030. To achieve this, we are relying on our extensive in-house drive
train expertise: We are increasing capacity at existing drive train
production locations – like here in Dingolfing – and developing
capabilities at others – like recently in Regensburg and Leipzig,”
explained Dr Michael Nikolaides, Senior Vice President, Production
Engines and E-Drives, BMW Group.

The BMW Group is investing more than 500 million euros in expanding
production capacity for e-drives at its Dingolfing location alone
between 2020 and 2022. From 2022, it will produce e-drives for more
than half a million electrified vehicles. The BMW Group will invest a
total of around 790 million euros in expanding capacity for electric
powertrain components at its Dingolfing, Leipzig, Regensburg and Steyr
locations between 2020 and 2022.

Standard production of the BMW iX* will soon get underway at BMW
Group Plant Dingolfing, followed by production of the BMW i4 at Plant
Munich in the autumn. The highly integrated e-drives and high-voltage
batteries for these vehicles will all be manufactured at the
Competence Centre for E-Drive Production in Dingolfing. The BMW Group
already began producing battery components at Plants Regensburg and
Leipzig in April and May 2021. In line with growing demand for
e-drives, BMW Group Plants Landshut and Steyr are also stepping up
production of e-drive housings.

Production of fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology

The output and energy content of drive units and high-voltage
batteries with fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology can be flexibly
scaled. This means they can be optimally adjusted to suit different
model variants.

Each vehicle uses up to two highly integrated e-drives, which combine
the electric motor, power electronics and transmission in a single
housing. Based on the design principle of a current-excited rotor, the
fifth-generation e-drive does not require any materials classified as
rare-earth metals.

BMW eDrive technology also comprises a high-voltage battery with
state-of-the-art battery cell technology. The BMW Group agreed with
its suppliers that they will only use renewable green power for
producing fifth-generation battery cells. The entire high-voltage
battery boasts outstanding qualities in the areas of performance,
charging and discharging characteristics, durability and safety. The
technically standardised production process for battery modules has
been further developed in such a way that different module variants
can be produced on the same production line – in line with the growing
range of electrified vehicle models and performance levels. The
production systems are highly flexible and scalable. Battery modules
are produced from supplied prismatic battery cells at the respective
BMW Group production location. A modular system developed in-house
allows model-specific high-voltage batteries to be manufactured from
these modules in a flexible arrangement.

The company has outstanding expertise and experience, both in the
field of battery cell technology and in production of model-specific
high-voltage batteries. The BMW Group conducts basic research in the
fields of cell chemistry and cell design at its own Battery Cell
Competence Centre. The BMW Group also produces battery cell prototypes
itself. These battery cell prototypes are used in tests to validate
the development maturity of battery cells and to demonstrate the
effectiveness of the production processes. In addition, the prototype
production of the battery cells serves the identification of process
potentials as well as the optimization of the production processes. In
this way, the BMW Group gains a thorough understanding of the entire
battery cell value chain and the decisive competitive advantages its
chemical and technical properties offer. This enables battery cells to
be manufactured to precise specifications that are geared towards each
vehicle’s individual requirements.

Competence Centre for E-Drive Production

Following extensive expansion, the Competence Centre for E-Drive
Production now provides a usable area of 125,000 sq. m. This is where
the company manufactures electric motors and the components needed for
them, as well as high-voltage batteries and battery modules. A paint
coating is also applied to the battery cells at this location. The
coating increases mechanical robustness and thermal conductivity,
thereby improving insulation and cooling of the even more powerful
fifth-generation battery cells.

Plant Dingolfing has been manufacturing standard high-voltage
batteries and battery modules since 2013, when the BMW Group's first
all-electric vehicle, the BMW i3*, went into production. The first
production lines for electric motors and high-voltage batteries for
plug-in hybrids went on-stream there in 2014. The Competence Centre
for E-Drive Production has been steadily growing ever since. The plant
has also been producing high-voltage batteries for the fully electric
MINI Cooper SE* since 2019 and, since 2020, also the highly integrated
fifth-generation e-drive used for the first time in the BMW iX3*.
Production of the even more powerful high-voltage batteries for the
BMW iX* and BMW i4 is now getting underway. E-drives for future models
can also be produced on the flexible production lines.

Qualification for long-term, sustainable jobs

With the BMW Group systematically pursuing progress in
electromobility, the demands on employees and their areas of
responsibility are also constantly evolving. “We are growing our staff
for e-drive production almost exclusively through personnel
restructuring. We are actively shaping the transformation process and
leveraging our employees’ skills so we can develop long-term
sustainable jobs,” explains Nikolaides.

The Competence Centre for E-Drive Production in Dingolfing currently
has almost 1,400 employees. By the end of 2021, around 1,900 employees
are expected to work in e-drive production in Dingolfing.

Production employees receive further training at the in-house
learning centre, which uses innovative vocational training and further
education methods to provide employees with intensive preparation for
their new tasks. Employees’ knowledge and skills are being expanded
specifically to include new electromobility technologies, with a
training concept that is constantly updated. The training sessions are
held in the classroom, at practice workstations and directly on the
production lines. Digital methods and augmented reality play a bigger
role here than ever before. Thanks to these methods, the training
courses were also able to continue safely during the coronavirus
pandemic, in compliance with health and safety measures.

“The learning centre takes a holistic approach that supports
employees throughout their professional development and further
education, from their first day in production,” reports Dr Sven
Jochmann, head of Production E-Drives Dingolfing, Landshut,
Regensburg, Leipzig. “As well as trainers and managers, new colleagues
are also supported by trained mentors who help them quickly find their
way around their new working environment,” adds Jochmann.

Transformation of the Dingolfing location

The Dingolfing location is a prime example of the successful
transformation of the BMW Group plants towards e-mobility and
digitalisation. E-drive production, including electric motors and
high-voltage batteries, is located in an existing, roughly 50-year-old
building at the site, rather than using new space. The infrastructure
was adapted to the new requirements and expanded accordingly. A modern
staff restaurant seats 300 and there is also a new parking deck with
space for 800 vehicles. The structural measures are rounded out by a
25,000 sq. m. logistics hall, new office spaces and social rooms close
to the production area, as well as an additional plant gate in the
south for improved logistics flows.

On the issue of sustainability, the BMW Group takes a holistic
approach to reducing CO2 emissions and minimising resource
consumption that covers the entire value chain, including in-house
production, the supply chain and use phase. In Dingolfing, as at all
BMW Group locations, production uses only green power. In addition,
all BMW Group locations have been net carbon neutral since this year,
through corresponding offsets and certificates. The company is also
using many other levers: from building technology to energy-efficient
installations to increased use of renewable energies. Electric trucks
will be used for intra-company goods transport at the Competence
Centre for E-Drive Production from the autumn.

2030: At least 50 percent of global BMW Group sales will be
fully electric

The BMW Group continues its massive electromobility ramp-up: The
company will offer five fully-electric models by the end of this year:
the BMW i3*, the MINI Cooper SE* and the BMW iX3*, as well as the two
main innovation flagships, the BMW iX* and BMW i4.

Between now and 2025, the BMW Group will increase its sales of
fully-electric models by an average of well over 50 percent per year –
more than ten times the number of units sold in 2020. Based on its
current market forecast, the company also expects at least 50 percent
of its global sales to come from fully-electric vehicles in 2030. In
total, over the next ten years or so, the BMW Group will be releasing
about ten million fully-electric vehicles onto the roads.

Global e-drive production network with a focus in Germany

The high-voltage batteries and battery components needed for all BMW
and MINI electrified vehicles come from the company’s own battery
factories in Dingolfing, Leipzig and Regensburg in Germany, as well as
from Spartanburg (USA) and Shenyang (China). The BMW Group has also
localised production of high-voltage batteries in Thailand, at its
Rayong plant, and is working with the Dräxlmaier Group for this.
Munich is home to the e-drive pilot plant and the Battery Cell
Competence Centre, where the BMW Group is conducting a full analysis
of battery cell value creation processes and advancing technology for
its production processes.

The company produces electric motors at the Competence Centre for
E-Drive Production in Dingolfing and at BMW Group Plant Landshut. BMW
Group Plant Steyr builds the housing for the highly integrated
fifth-generation e-drive.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

Munich. The BMW Group is stepping up its activities
in the field of sustainability, becoming the first automotive
manufacturer worldwide to equip its cars with tyres using certified
sustainable natural rubber and rayon, a wood-based material used to
strengthen the tyres. The company will source 22-inch tyres in the
first instance exclusively from Pirelli and, from August of this year,
will use them in the BMW X5 xDrive45e Plug-in-Hybrid (fuel
consumption combined: 1.7-1.2 l/100km (WLTP), 2.1-1.6 l/100 km
(NEDC); power consumption combined: 27.7-24.3 kWh/100 km (WLTP),
25.2-23.5 kWh/100 km (NEDC); CO2 emissions combined: 39-27 g/km
(WLTP), 47-37 g/km (NEDC)). Certification of the rubber
plantations and the complex supply chain for natural rubber and rayon
takes place in accordance with the strict standards of the independent
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

“As a premium manufacturer, we aspire to lead the way in
sustainability and take responsibility,” said Dr Andreas Wendt, member
of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Purchasing and
Supplier Network. “We have been committed to improving cultivation of
natural rubber and increasing transparency in the supplier network
since 2015. The use of tyres made of certified natural rubber is a
pioneering achievement for our industry. In this way, we are helping
preserve biodiversity and forests to counteract climate change.”

Natural rubber is the basic material for many products we use in
our daily lives, such as boots and mattresses. About six million small
farmers worldwide are responsible for over 80% of the world’s natural
rubber cultivation. In the so-called rubber belt across the tropical
regions, they run farms of between one and two hectares in size under
a wide variety of different conditions. Agreeing uniform social and
environmental growing conditions with these millions of small
individual farms is therefore a major challenge.

By far the largest share of natural rubber grown worldwide goes
into tyre production. Natural rubber’s high elasticity and sturdiness
currently make it irreplaceable for tyre production.

Small label, big impact
As an independent
organisation, FSC has developed an internationally recognised and
demanding certification standard in recent years that is used
worldwide for environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and
economically viable management of the forests. The organisation, whose
well-known logo is already established in the wood and paper industry,
also applies this standard to products made of natural rubber.

The new 22-inch P ZERO ∗ tyre has now become the world's first
tyre to receive the coveted FSC label. To earn this certification,
Pirelli adapted its US plant in Rome, Georgia, to produce tyres using
FSC-certified natural rubber and rayon. From there, the tyres are
delivered to BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, around 370 km away, and
mounted on the BMW X5 Plug-in Hybrid. The star ∗ in the name indicates
that the new tyre meets the BMW Group’s strict performance
requirements, including particularly low rolling resistance and noise level.

Giovanni Tronchetti Provera, Pirelli’s Senior Vice President for
Sustainability and Future Mobility, said: “Before even reaching the
road, sustainable mobility begins with raw materials. With the world’s
first FSC-certified tyre, Pirelli once again demonstrates its
commitment to pursuing increasingly challenging goals in terms of
sustainability, a testament to the constant work on innovative
materials and increasingly cutting-edge production processes. We
continue to invest in sustainable growth for our planet, aware that
this is also essential for the future of our businesses.”

Jeremy Harrison, Chief Markets Officer, FSC International,
added: “The new FSC-certified Pirelli Tyre is a significant milestone
in the drive to deliver economic, social, and environmental benefits
across the natural rubber value chain. This is a major step forward in
the journey towards a more sustainable natural rubber value chain,
thereby helping to mitigate deforestation and support the fight
against climate change.”

Long-standing commitment to greater transparency and
sustainability in the natural rubber supplier
network
The use of the first tyres containing certified
sustainable natural rubber and rayon at the BMW Group is the result of
the company’s extensive commitment in this area. In 2019, the BMW
Group joined forces with well-known tyre manufacturers, NGOs, rubber
producers and consumers to create the Global Platform for Sustainable
Natural Rubber (GPSNR). Small farmers are also represented in this
initiative. The GPSNR is committed to improving social and
environmental conditions for cultivation of natural rubber and pushing
for more sustainability. It also implements measures to stop
deforestation and make supply chains more transparent. The GPSNR
currently has almost 100 members, who are responsible for about 50
percent of the global natural rubber market.

Through its activities in the GPSNR and close cooperation with
its suppliers, the BMW Group is constantly working to further improve
sustainability in the natural rubber supply chain. The BMW Group is
stepping up these activities and plans to steadily expand its sourcing
of tyres made from sustainably grown natural rubber.

The BMW Group has been working with the FSC organisation for
many years (Licence code FSC-N002012). The company decided to use
FSC-certified wood in the BMW i3, which was first launched onto the
market in 2013. The BMW iX for release later this year will also
feature FSC-certified wood. In 2017, the BMW Group and FSC advocated
for further development of FSC standards for cultivation of natural
rubber in Thailand.

Sustainability an integral part of all purchasing
activities
Independently of these measures, the BMW
Group has contractually obligated all its direct suppliers to respect
human rights, comply with expanded environmental and social standards
and to introduce management systems to promote occupational safety and
protect the environment since 2014. This also includes protecting
forests and biodiversity. These requirements must also be
contractually passed on to subcontractors. BMW Group Purchasing does
not rely on contractual obligations alone for this but is also
implementing a large number of additional measures in a transparent
process. A risk filter is used to evaluate potential supplier
locations worldwide even before the call for bids.

The next step is to require possible suppliers to outline their
sustainability activities in a detailed questionnaire. External
partners also work with internal appraisers to review selected
locations. Throughout the contract period, external partners work with
internal appraisers to verify compliance with sustainability
requirements through questionnaires and audits. In this way, BMW Group
Purchasing is able to monitor thousands of locations every year.

Sustainable mobility with the BMW X5
xDrive45e
The BMW Group has completed full lifecycle
CO2 certification for the BMW X5 xDrive45e – from raw
material procurement, through the supply chain, production and use
phase, all the way to recycling. If charged during the use phase with
the average European electricity mix, this gives it an advantage of
around 40 percent over the BMW X5 xDrive40i. If charged with green
power, the advantage is around 70 percent. The electric range amounts
to 77-88 kilometres (WLTP).

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

BMW X5 xDrive45e Plug-in-Hybrid:

Munich /
Dingolfing. The BMW Group will power production of
the new electric BMW iX* and BMW i4 at Plants Dingolfing and Munich
entirely with regional green hydroelectricity. Contracts have been
signed with Stadtwerke München and RWE Supply & Trading for energy
to be supplied by hydroelectricity from rivers Isar and Lech. Board
Member for Production Milan Nedeljković: “We take a holistic view of
sustainability. So rather than just minimising emissions from driving,
we are working to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of our
production processes.”

The BMW Group already powers its production facilities worldwide
entirely with green electricity today. “What’s new is the fact that in
the future, we will source our renewable electricity directly from
regional providers based close to our plants,” Nedeljković explains.
The green electricity needed for BMW iX* production will come from the
Isar hydroelectric power stations Uppenborn between Moosburg and
Landshut while production of the BMW i4 will be powered by the Lech
hydroelectric power stations in Gersthofen and Rain. The energy they
supply is also used to manufacture a wide range of components for the
two electric models, at BMW Group Plants Landshut, Dingolfing and Berlin.

“Our direct supply contracts add another major boost to the
eco-credentials of the green electricity we use in production,”
Nedeljković emphasises. But as well as implementing more and more such
contracts, the BMW Group is increasing the share of the renewable or
carbon-neutral electricity it generates itself. Since 2013, for
instance, the four wind turbines at Plant Leipzig have provided all
the electricity needed to manufacture the BMW i3*. Another of several
examples from the BMW Group production network is the newest plant, in
San Luis Potosí, Mexico, where production is largely powered using
energy from large solar arrays.

The energy goals the BMW Group has set itself are designed for the
longer term. Between 2006 and 2019, emissions from production fell by
more than 70 percent per car. Going forward Nedeljković explains: “We
want to cut CO2 emissions by another 80 percent by 2030, to
less than 10 percent of what they were in 2006.”

The BMW Group has a strong foundation to build on, having raised the
bar repeatedly over the last few decades in terms of sustainability.
Continuous improvement remains central to the strategy to cut
CO2 emissions and increase resource efficiency.

As well as sourcing 100 percent green energy, since 2020 the BMW
Group has been systematically investing in improving energy efficiency
– partly by capitalising on the opportunities of digitalisation. Data
analytics has already helped make production more efficient, for
instance with predictive machine maintenance and by minimising the
number of parts rejected from the bodyshop. As well as drastically
cutting actual CO2 emissions, the BMW Group will offset any
remaining emissions (Scope 1 + 2) in full via relevant certificates.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

Munich/Shenyang. The BMW Group is systematically
pursuing its electrification strategy and will release the new BMW iX3
onto the market by the end of 2020. Standard production of the BMW
core brand’s first pure electric model will get underway at the BMW
Brilliance Automotive joint venture (BBA) in China in late summer as
planned: BBA Plant Dadong will produce the first Sports Activity
Vehicle (SAV) with a pure electric drive train for the global market.
The first of these electric vehicles will be delivered to customers by
the end of the year.

The testing required for homologation of the new BMW iX3 has now been
successfully completed and the results submitted to the regulatory
authorities in key automotive markets. “This is the first time we have
completed the entire homologation process for a fully electric model
in China and Europe at the same time. The staff on our testing team
mastered this unique challenge with tremendous dedication and
efficiency,” said Arno Keller, head of Development BMW iX3. More than
340 hours of testing, including over 7700 kilometres of test drives,
had to be completed within four weeks.

Preparations for production of the BMW iX3 were stepped up in
Shenyang in parallel. BBA has been building BMW iX3 pre-production
vehicles at Plant Dadong in Shenyang since the middle of last year.
The 200th pre-production model recently came off the assembly line and
test drives on Chinese roads began – allowing development and test
engineers to make final adjustments.

“We are right on schedule with our BMW iX3 pre-production vehicles
and will launch standard production in late summer, using
state-of-the-art technologies such as custom installation of the new
high-voltage battery and artificial intelligence for monitoring
parts,” explained Robert Küssel, BBA Plant Director Dadong. “We are
also producing the fully-electric BMW iX3 and the BMW X3 with
combustion engine on the same production line. This enables us to
achieve high efficiency and flexibility in production,” Küssel continued.

With the new BMW iX3, the BMW Group is adding another fully-electric
vehicle to its portfolio that will not only tap into new customer
groups, but also arrives on the market at a time when demand for
electric vehicles is expanding significantly. The electric car is
based on the globally successful BMW X3 and combines the versatility
and robust functionality of a premium mid-size Sports Activity Vehicle
with ground-breaking drive technology for locally emission-free
driving pleasure. The BMW X3 is the brand’s first model available with
both conventional petrol and diesel engines, a plug-in hybrid system
or a pure electric drive train. This “Power of Choice” approach allows
the company to respond to the different needs and wants of its
customers worldwide and maximise its impact in reducing global CO2 emissions.

The BMW iX3 already comes with fifth-generation BMW eDrive
technology, including a drive unit with the electric engine, power
electronics and transmission highly integrated into a central housing.
This significantly reduces the installation space and mass of the
drive technology relative to output and offers added flexibility for
installing new electric powertrain components in different vehicle
derivatives. A further highlight is the electric motor, which no
longer requires the use of rare earths and ensures the BMW Group is
not depend on their availability.

The fifth-generation electric drive train also includes new and more
powerful high-voltage batteries. Thanks to their scalable, modular
design, these can be used flexibly in the respective vehicle
architecture and at the respective production locations.

With a range of around 440 kilometres in the WLTP test cycle
(preliminary data), the BMW iX3 paves the way for BMW eDrive
technology, which will also be used in BMW i4 and BMW iNEXT models
from 2021 on.

Munich / Spartanburg. Production of the first
pre-production models of the new BMW X7 Sports Activity Vehicle has
commenced at the BMW Group Spartanburg plant, USA. So the countdown
has started for the final twelve months leading up to the presentation
of the production car at the end of 2018. Prior to this, the vehicle
will undergo various tests under partially extreme conditions.

Knudt Flor, head of the BMW Group Spartanburg plant: “We are proud to
produce the BMW X7 here in Spartanburg, the home of our X models. This
is a very special vehicle and our employees are looking forward to yet
a further member of the X family. Together with the BMW X7, a total of
five BMW X models will be exported from Spartanburg to all four
corners of the globe.”

Camouflage wrap conceals final look.
At the plant, the
production of pre-series models serves to secure and optimise future
series production. Consequently, BMW X7 pre-production models already
use the same assembly line as the BMW X5 and BMW X6 production models.
An especially trained team realises the series production process for
new vehicle models at the plant and qualifies employees for future
series production.

The pre-production models built at the BMW Group Spartanburg plant
are handed over to development department specialists, who require
them for homologation, registration as well as for diverse testing
purposes such as endurance tests and test drives under extreme
conditions in the desert regions of Death Valley or on the ice and
snow covered slopes of Scandinavia.

The pre-production model is fitted with its camouflage wrap while
still at the plant. The conspicuous striped patterns are designed to
help conceal the new SAV’s final look as far as possible.

Fifth series from the BMW Group Spartanburg plant.
In Spartanburg, the BMW Group produces BMW X models for
the USA and the global market.
With record production figures of
more than 411,000 units in 2016, Spartanburg is currently the BMW
Group’s largest plant worldwide. Around 70 percent of the vehicles
produced in Spartanburg are exported to 140 countries throughout the
world. According to the US Ministry of Trade, the BMW Group is
therefore the largest vehicle exporter in the USA measured in export
value. Maximum annual production capacity stands at around 450,000 vehicles.

The BMW Group Spartanburg plant employs more than 9,000 people; a
further 1,000 jobs are to be added by the year 2021. Each day, 1,400
BMW X3, X4, X5 and X6 models come off the assembly line at the
Spartanburg plant; these will be complemented by a fifth series, the
BMW X7, for which the Spartanburg plant is currently preparing.

To date, the BMW Group has invested eight billion US dollars in the
production location and has built around 3.9 million vehicles since
being taken into operation on 8 September 1994.

*Due to the pre-series vehicle status, technical details like fuel
consumption, CO2 emissions, etc. will be communicated later next year.

made to cater for the UK market.

Munich. From trendsetter to bestseller. Within just
eleven years, one million BMW X5 models have been sold. The
anniversary edition, a sapphire black metallic BMW X5 xDrive35i
featuring cinnamon brown Nevada leather trim, came off the assembly
line at the American BMW plant in Spartanburg/South Carolina and is
currently on its way to a customer in China. Achieving the seven-digit
production figure is a further milestone in the success story of the
first Sports Activity Vehicle. When it premiered in 1999, the
four-wheel driven BMW X5 was the first vehicle of its kind. Since
then, the concept of combining superior dynamics on tarmac with
outstanding traction on off-road terrain, has been a show-stopper
worldwide, whilst also generating crucial impulses for the BMW model
portfolio. With the family of BMW X models, which has meanwhile
grown to comprise a total of four members, the company has recorded
steadily increasing sales figures unmatched by any other manufacturer
with comparable vehicles.

The BMW X5 remains the symbol and most crucial innovator for the
continuing success of the Sports Activity Vehicle concept. The
spacious five-door car offers up to seven seats, its intelligent
four-wheel drive system BMW xDrive guarantees awesome acceleration,
both on and off road. Permanent, electronically controlled four-wheel
drive technology distributes motive force to the front and rear wheels
variably and according to each specific situation. Furthermore, a
luxurious interior ambience and a wide choice of innovative driver
assistance systems contribute towards the characteristic manifestation
of driving pleasure so typical of a BMW.

Moreover, numerous awards document the outstanding product quality
with regard to design, driving pleasure, safety and reliability. In
2007, the BMW X5 received, inter alia, the design prize
“autonis” awarded by the trade journal “auto motor
und sport“ for the most attractive design, as well as a Gold
Award in the J.D. Power Study on customer satisfaction in North
America. The American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)
voted this Sports Activity Vehicle as the “Top Safety
Pick” for outstanding crash test behaviour both in 2007 and
2008. Current proof of the vehicle’s exceptional reliability is
given by the latest breakdown statistics issued by Europe’s
largest automobile club ADAC, in which the BMW X5 ranks second place
behind the BMW X3 in the all-terrain vehicle category.

Again in 2010, the BMW X5 is more than ever a role model and
benchmark in its class in terms of driving dynamics, efficiency,
variability, premium quality and safety. With a concisely modified
design, a thoroughly revised engine range and additional innovative
equipment features, it continues to extend its lead within the
competitive environment. Its trendsetting qualities include
outstanding efficiency unparalleled in this particular segment. A
prime example of this is the BMW X5 xDrive30d, which is
powered by a 180 kW/245 bhp straight six-cylinder diesel
engine and achieves an average fuel consumption of 7.4 litres/100 km
in the EU test cycle.

With its multitude of qualities the BMW X5 has become the most
significant innovator within the entire competitive environment of
four-wheel driven vehicles. At the same time, the premium car builder
has also repeatedly assumed the cutting edge in each respective
segment with the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe, the BMW
X6, and with the compact BMW X1.

The development of the BMW Spartanburg plant is also closely linked
with the success story of the BMW X5. The location, which has existed
for 15 years now, has become the most crucial centre of expertise for
BMW X models within the BMW Group’s global production network.
Built in Spartanburg, the BMW X5 is now exported to more than 120
countries, with the BMW X6 also being produced there for export to the
entire global market. Before the end of this year, production of the
latest BMW X3 generation will commence at this location.

The BMW Group sees further growth potential in the USA and will
therefore expand its activities in its largest single market. "We will expand
the production capacity of our US plant in Spartanburg in the medium term from
the current 140,000 to well over 200,000 vehicles per annum", stated Norbert
Reithofer, the Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG at the Annual
General Meeting held on Tuesday in Munich. "This is one element of our future
strategy. Taking this step will help to lower our US dollar currency risk", he
added. The adverse impact for the BMW Group from the weak US dollar and
Japanese yen in the last financial year alone totalled euro 666 million. The
group currently manufactures the Z4 and X5 in the USA. The X6, as well as a
possible successor to the X3, are to be built there in the future.

Earnings and sales volume outlook for 2007 reaffirmed

The BMW Group remains on course in terms of the targets it has set for the
current financial year: "Adjusted for the gain on the Rolls-Royce exchangeable
bond, we wish to improve on the record pre-tax profit result achieved in 2006",
Reithofer reaffirmed. All three brands are also forecast to achieve new sales
volume records. The BMW Group aims to increase sales volume for 2007 in the
high single-digit percentage range to over 1.4 million vehicles. The aim
remains to achieve an annual sales volume of approximately 1.6 million vehicles
by 2010.

Performance in the first quarter 2007 was influenced by adverse currency
factors, high raw material prices and high start-up costs for new models. The
change in reported earnings was also affected by a significant "base effect" of
euro 375 million, namely the one-off non-cash gain arising on the partial
settlement of the exchangeable bond on shares in the British aero engine
manufacturer, Rolls-Royce plc. that was recognised in the first quarter 2006.

Group revenues increased by 2.9% to euro 11,951 million (first quarter 2006:
euro 11,618 million). The pre-tax profit fell by 34.3% to euro 852 million
(first quarter 2006: euro 1,296 million). Excluding exceptional items, group
earnings fell by only 11.7%. The first-quarter profit after tax, at euro 587
million, was 38.1% lower than the previous year's figure of euro 948 million.
Despite model changes during the first three months of the year, the number of
BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brand cars sold edged up by 0.1% to 333,276 units
(first quarter 2006: 332,923 unit). The sales volume is expected to rise
noticeably in the coming months thanks to new models.

BMW Group achieved record earnings in 2006

Despite the difficult conditions facing the worldwide automobile industry, the
BMW Group can look back on a successful financial year 2006, achieving new high
levels for sales volume, revenues and earnings. The number of vehicles sold
increased by 3.5% to 1,373,970 units (2005: 1,327,992 units). All three brands
headed the market in their own segments. Thanks to sales volume growth, a more
favourable model sales mix and efficiency improvements, the BMW Group was again
able to a large extent to offset the impact of adverse exchange rates and high
raw material prices amounting to more than euro 1 billion.

The profit before tax rose by 25.5% to euro 4,124 million (2005: euro 3,287
million). This includes the one-time gain on the exchangeable bond referred to
above. At an operating level (i.e. excluding the exceptional gain), the pre-tax
profit improved by 3.0%. The net profit climbed by 28.4% to reach a new
all-time high level of euro 2,874 million (2005: euro 2,239 million). Earnings
per share rose to euro 4.38 (2005: euro 3.33) per share of common stock and to
euro 4.40 (2005: euro 3.35) per share of preferred stock. Group revenues
improved by 5.0% to euro 48,999 million (2005: euro 46,656 million) on the back
of a strong sales volume performance and continued strong growth in financial
services business.

Car sales volumes above previous year's level in virtually all markets

The USA continued to be the market with the largest sales volume for the BMW
Group, with a total of 313,921 cars sold in 2006, up by 2.1% on a year-on-year
basis. A total of 816,829 cars was sold in Europe, 1.7% more than in the
previous year. Germany remained by far the most important European market.
However, due partly to the restricted availability of the MINI, the sales
volume on this market was down by 2.8% to 287,715 vehicles. The BMW Group
recorded its largest growth rates in Asia. The sales volume there rose by 13.0%
to 142,084 units. Japan is the largest single market for the BMW Group in this
region, with the number of cars handed over to customers up by 5.6% to 62,115
units.

Sharp increase in dividend proposed

In the light of the high level of profitability and the positive outlook, the
Board of Management and the Supervisory Board are proposing a significant
dividend increase at the Annual General Meeting. BMW AG's unappropriated profit
available for distribution, totalling euro 458 million, will be used to pay a
dividend of euro 0.70 for each share of common stock (2005: euro 0.64) - an
increase of 9.4% over the previous year - and euro 0.72 for each share of
preferred stock (2005: euro 0.66) - an increase of 9.1% over the previous year.
Including the share buy-back, BMW AG's shareholders will therefore participate
in the success of the BMW Group by receiving an aggregate amount in excess of
euro 700 million.

New authorisation for share buy-back proposed

The Board of Management and the Supervisory Board of BMW AG are also proposing
a resolution at the Annual General Meeting to authorise the buy-back of up to
10% of the Company's share capital. The authorisation will again be valid for a
period of 18 months. The buy-back authorisation passed in the previous year is
valid until 15 November 2007. It has not yet been decided whether or to what
extent that authorisation will be applied to buy back further shares.

BMW Welt set to open in mid-October

The BMW Group will open its new delivery centre, BMW Welt, on 17 October. The
public will have the opportunity to visit this architecturally unique building
for the first time on open days on 20 and 21 October.

* * *
Norbert Reithofer's speech at the Annual General Meeting can be
downloaded from the BMW Group website at www. bmwgroup.com/ir.

Press Contact: Barbara Brailey
Tel: +44-1344-480-320
E-mail: barbara.brailey@bmw.co.uk

Press Release,Events,Locations,Sales & Finance

BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, USA, has been
proclaimed the Energy Partner of the Year by the US Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA). In May 2006 the plant converted the supply of energy at the paint
shop to methane gas. This saves about 60,000 tons of CO2 a year, equal to the
annual heat energy consumption of some 15,000 US households. At the same time
the plant's annual energy costs will be cut by a six-digit Euro figure.
The coveted award was presented to BMW Manufacturing Co. and the plant's
partner, Dürr Systems, which delivered the process technology for the paint
shop, on 24 January 2007. Through the award, the Environmental Protection
Agency specifically honours one of the most ambitious landfill gas projects in
North America. The gas for BMW Plant Spartanburg is generated by the biological
conversion of waste materials at the Palmetto Landfill Site 15 kilometres from
the plant. From there methane gas goes through a pipeline directly to the
turbines on the BMW plant premises, where it is then used in particular to
generate electric power and warm water for the paint shop.
"This is a very positive project that pays off for all parties involved. It
allows us to use a source of energy previously untapped, capitalising on this
supply of energy for generating electricity and heat at our plant. This enables
us to reduce emissions enormously and make a significant contribution to the
cause of environmental protection", states Briggs Hamilton, the Environmental
Spokesman for BMW Plant Spartanburg. In all, 63 per cent of the energy consumed
by the plant is now covered by methane gas.
Methane gas from the landfill was used to supply energy to the plant for the
first time in 2002. With the results of this pilot application being convincing
and satisfactory, this initial test set the foundation for the 100 per cent
supply of gas energy to the paint shop now becoming reality.
The Energy Partner of the Year award is presented each year as part of the
EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP). This program promotes the
partnership of communities and companies seeking to capitalise on the use of
landfill gases for the generation of energy.

Press Contact: Barbara Brailey
Tel: +44-1344-480-320
E-mail: barbara.brailey@bmw.co.uk

Press Release,Sustainability,Locations

Today the 500,000th BMW X5 is coming off the production
line at BMW Manufacturing Co. in South Carolina/USA - some 5 1/2 years after
the start of production in September 1999. This very special vehicle, a
3.0-litre X5 diesel in Midnight Blue and with BMW Individual equipment, is
going to BMW's Retail Outlet in Hamburg, Germany. BMW Manufacturing Co. in
Spartanburg is the exclusive manufacturing plant building the X5 for the world
market and exports this unique Sports Activity Vehicle to more than 120
countries the world over. The X5's main sales market, however, remains the USA.

The BMW X5 was the first vehicle to establish the new market segment of SAVs
and, to this day, sets the benchmark in this segment in terms of both driving
dynamics and safety. The unique story of success of this equally unique Sports
Activity Vehicle began right from the start upon its introduction into the
market, the 100,000th X5 coming off the production line within just two years
after the start of production on 23 August 2001.

BMW's strategy of success - production follows the market.
Production of the BMW X5 in the USA demonstrates the success of BMW's strategy
of "production following the market". Building the X5 in its main sales market,
BMW is not only setting off the currency risk, but also boosting national
sales: Ever since taking the decision in 1992 to build a new plant in South
Carolina, BMW has boosted sales in the USA from the original figure at the time
of 53,000 units to 260,079 units in 2004. "Without our commitment in South
Carolina these results would not have been possible, simply because our plant
in Spartanburg makes us a local player in the USA", states Dr. Norbert
Reithofer, Board Member Production of BMW AG.

Establishing and enlarging production capacities in the USA, the BMW Group has
helped to secure and create new jobs also in Germany, with a large share of the
BMWs sold in the USA coming from BMW's German plants in Munich, Dingolfing, and
Regensburg.

Press Contact: Angela Stangroom
Tel: +44-1252-92-1268
E-mail: angela.stangroom@bmw.co.uk

Press Release,X5,Locations,Product,BMW
