Neue Klasse model, the new BMW i3. Since its unveiling in March, the
trailblazing all-electric saloon has already generated strong customer
demand and, from today, customers have an early opportunity to place
an order with the new BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition (WLTP, combined
[EnVKV]: energy consumption 16.1–13.5 kWh/62 miles; CO₂ emissions: 0
g/mile; CO₂ class A) and offers a range of 471 – 563 miles1).

Jochen Goller, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG,
Customer, Brands, Sales, said: “The new BMW i3 is a
groundbreaking car for us. As a fully electric model, it will be
competing in a high-volume segment and is therefore extremely
significant for the BMW Group. At the same time, we can already tell
from the high level of interest in this model that it will be very
well received by our customers. The start of orders on 18 June in
First Edition form – ahead of the official market launch – is an
important next step here.”

Building on the BMW i3 50 xDrive’s comprehensive standard
specification, the First Edition adds further standard-fit equipment.
Based on the M Sport model, it includes M Sport exterior and interior
design elements alongside features such as BMW Iconic Glow, the BMW 3D
Head-Up Display and AC Charging Professional – increasing the AC
charging rate from 11 kW to 22 kW. The BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition
is available to order now, priced from £57,905 OTR.

At its official market launch in autumn 2026, the BMW i3 50
xDrive (WLTP, combined [EnVKV]: energy consumption 16.1 – 13.4 kWh/62
miles; CO₂ emissions: 0 g/mile; CO₂ class A) will be priced from
£53,005 OTR, offering a single-charge range of up to 567
miles1 (WLTP).

Mike Reichelt, Head of Neue Klasse BMW, explains:
“The BMW 3 Series has been an icon of our brand for seven generations
and therefore more than five decades. It encapsulates pure driving
pleasure, innovation and timeless design. With the Neue Klasse and its
technology clusters, we are literally skipping a vehicle generation.
This is the DNA of our sporting saloon in a completely new vehicle
concept as we write the next chapter in the BMW 3 Series success story.

The BMW i3 exemplifies the new BMW design language: focused on
the essentials in a modern, unmistakable style.
With its 2.5-box design, the new BMW i3 offers a modern take
on hallmark BMW saloon proportions and is immediately recognisable as
a BMW 3 Series. Its silhouette is characterised by a long wheelbase,
glasshouse set well back and short overhangs. The BMW-typical
four-eyed face receives a modern interpretation, while the Neue Klasse
design language guides a fresh front end. The BMW kidney grille and
twin headlights merge as an innovative light signature into a single
stylistic piece. The horizontal rear lights feature an L-shaped design
in a new, abstract form which extends far into the shoulder area.
Prominently flared wheel arches amplify the model’s broad, sporty stance.

Taking BMW’s hallmark driver focus to a new level.
Inside, the new BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating
System X offers a unique display and operating system optimised around
the driver. At its heart is the BMW Panoramic Vision, which projects
content across the entire width of the lower area of the windscreen.
The multimodal operating logic of BMW Panoramic iDrive combines touch,
haptic and voice-based interactions. The BMW Intelligent Personal
Assistant plays a key role, enabling numerous vehicle functions, as
well as navigation and media content, to be controlled using natural
language. The introduction of large language model technology (LLM,
Alexa+) results in a dialogue-based verbal interaction, enabling
intuitive and intelligent exchanges.

BMW i3 takes a technological leap forward with
sixth-generation electric drive system.
The BMW i3 50 xDrive is powered by two electric motors, one
on each axel, resulting in a combined system output of 469 hp, a peak
torque of 645 Nm and 0-to-62-mph acceleration in 4.7 seconds. The
First Edition features identical motors and performance figures.

In the new BMW i3, highly efficient sixth-generation BMW eDrive
technology teams with the Heart of Joy control computer and BMW
Dynamic Performance Control software stack to provide precise,
effortless and assured driving characteristics. The Heart of Joy
responds ten times faster than previous systems and reduces the number
of control interventions necessary. Meanwhile, the Soft Stop function
ensures the smoothest stopping action in the history of BMW, bringing
the vehicle to a complete halt without any jerking or braking noises
through precise control of the electric motors. The result is a whole
new level of Sheer Driving Pleasure.

The assisted driving experience also reaches new heights with BMW
Symbiotic Drive, enabling a seamless interaction between assistance
functions and the driver. With driver assistance activated, drivers
can respond to situations in their own style by accelerating, steering
or braking without deactivating the active assistance system. The
optional Motorway Assistant enables hands-free assisted driving on the
motorway at speeds of up to 81 mph (or the national speed limit) with
automated lane changes after confirmation by eye signal2.
Clear operating logic and displays ensure that assisted driving in the
BMW i3 is always intuitive and controllable, enabling safe use of the
highest SAE Level 2 automation.

Long range, shorter charging times and bidirectional charging.
The BMW i3 50 xDrive is powered by a high-voltage battery
with new cylindrical cells and a net capacity of 108.7 kWh. The
pack-to-open-body design of the battery housing turns it into a
structural component. 800V technology significantly reduces charging
times, enabling up to 263 miles of range to be added in just 10
minutes when connected to a 400 kW DC rapid charger3.
Bidirectional charging is also supported. In First Edition
specification, the BMW i3 50 xDrive offers a range of up to 563
miles1 (WLTP).

The First Edition brings additional standard features inside
the cabin.
The interior of the BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition includes
additional standard features, such as electrically adjustable front
multifunction seats, three-zone automatic climate control, sun
protection glazing and steering wheel heating. The BMW 3D Head-Up
Display is also standard fit. It is integrated above the BMW Panoramic
Vision and projects selected content exclusively into the driver’s
line of sight to enable precise spatial perception – especially useful
when following navigation instructions. Further standard features
include the Harman Kardon surround sound system, automatic tailgate
operation and AC charging Professional – increasing the AC charging
rate from 11 to 22 kW.

Optional equipment available for the BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition.
Customers can add further personal touches to the BMW i3 50
xDrive First Edition via the options list, where rear seat heating, a
panoramic glass sunroof with climate comfort glazing, and an
electrically operated tow bar can be added. BMW Digital Premium can
also be specified, bringing additional BMW Maps functionality, the
Security Assistant and data for a wide range of entertainment.
Additional driving and parking functions offered include Parking
Assistant Plus, Parking Assistant Professional and the Motorway Assistant.

A wide range of exterior colours, alloy wheels, interior
designs and steering wheels.
Six exterior paint finishes are available for the BMW i3 50
xDrive First Edition, including new M Le Castellet Blue. The alloy
wheel portfolio comprises three aerodynamic options and a light-alloy
variant – with sizes of 19- and 20-inches available. Inside, customers
can choose from Contemporary and BMW M-themed interior designs in a
variety of colours. A range of steering wheels offer further scope for
customisation, including a white BMW Individual steering wheel (only
in conjunction with the Contemporary interior design, Bicolour Digital White).
In a compelling second interview featuring breakout pop and

insight into their ascent as a breakthrough act, the pivotal
connections they’ve forged, and their experience sharing the stage
with Coldplay

The acclaimed hit music discovery podcast, BMW Play
Next, hosted by Edith Bowman is making an exciting return. Renowned
for its reputation as a space for pioneering artistry and
ground-breaking music from the next generation of talent, the latest
episode, set to air on 20 September, brings together British rock
sensation Coldplay and genre-splicing Manchester fourpiece, Porij and
a hand-picked playlist of emerging hot-off-the-press tracks.

Bowman leads an insightful conversation with Will Champion and
Guy Berryman around the ever-evolving industry landscape and the
modern-day challenges confronting artists, uncovering the core
principles of their approach - environmental impact and generation
accessibility. Talking about their proudest achievements to date,
Champion says, "We're running shows completely from a battery
now, so we're not using any outside power. They're re-purposed BMW car
batteries, it's something that's not been done before."

In 2021, BMW contributed to the creation of the world’s
first-ever mobile, rechargeable show battery for the band’s ‘Music of
The Spheres World Tour’. Supporting the British band with its ambition
to become more sustainable - a game-changing cooperation that is
setting new industry benchmarks and blueprint for the entire live
industry - recyclable BMW i3 batteries now provide the necessary super
low-emission, electric power to replace the usual diesel and petrol
generators. This results in a significant reduction of the carbon
footprint of many of the band’s live performances, contributing to one
of the greenest tours in music history.

“The power is recharged using a range of renewable sources
including solar installations, a kinetic stadium floor and power
bikes, that harness the collective power of the fans themselves,” adds
Champion. The BMW i3 batteries were the first in the worldwide
automotive industry suitable for second-life use without additional
processing; a technology that is an essential part of the BMW Group’s
vision of sustainability and circular economy.

With an unyielding commitment to sustainability and approaching
a 50% reduction in carbon production on their tour, Berryman
highlights the in-person role longstanding team members play in the
band's vision and innovation, adding “Misty Buckley and Phil Harvey
are instrumental in the design and shape, and Chris as well –
certainly when it comes to the physical structure’. Accessibility and
innovation have remained paramount since the band’s inception in 1997.
Steps include giving deaf and hard-of-hearing fans the chance to
experience their music at live gigs by giving out Subpacs at shows.
Subpacs are wearable bass-responsive amp and speaker systems.

Speaking of sparking nostalgia and championing breakthrough
talent, Berryman reflects “There’s a nice part of the show where we
play on what we call the C-stage. It’s just bass, guitar and a piano –
and we always talk as a band before we perform a song about how this
is how we started in Jonny’s bedroom.” This reality has truly
materialised for emerging pop and rock Manchester four-piece, Porij.

In a second long-form interview, Bowman explores Porij’s unique
perspective on dancefloor culture. Vocalists, Eggy and Tommy, openly
express the need for a transformative shift in the music industry's
infrastructure to enable emerging artists to adopt more
environmentally friendly practices and be seen. Eggy candidly
addresses the challenges their band has encountered, and she offers
insights into the intriguing blend of "jazz, post-punk"
sounds that define their upcoming album.

From being chosen to support Coldplay in 2022 to touring the UK,
they expand on the diverse genre influences and experiences that have
shaped them as musicians today, Tommy adding "Manchester offers a
rich tapestry of musical inspiration, especially when you're finding
your feet and meeting with others starting out. It’s been a priceless network.”
Car Grant
• Prices starts from £33,805 OTR for the BMW i3 and
£34,805 OTR for the BMW i3s
• BMW i3 continues to play a
pioneering role in the BMW brand’s electrification strategy

BMW UK has announced a pricing realignment for the BMW i3 and
BMW i3s to ensure that customers can continue to benefit from the UK
Government Plug In Car Grant (PiCG) following the redefinition of the
grant on 18 March 2021.

On the road pricing before grant for the BMW i3 120Ah now starts
at £33,805 and £34,805 for the sporty BMW i3s 120Ah. There have been
no changes to the high levels of standard specification offered on
either model.

The PiCG
offers consumers up to £2,500 off the retail price of vehicles that
have CO2 emissions of less than 50g/km and can travel at least 70
miles without any tailpipe emissions and a retail price of £35,000 or
less. The all-electric BMW i3 has a range of 182-190 miles (WLTP)
(173-150 miles WLTP for the BMW i3s).

The BMW i3 has been a runaway success since its UK market launch
in 2013. With sales growing exponentially, over 22,000 examples are
now on British roads. That upwards sales trend continued in 2020 – a
year where the UK car market shrunk by almost 30% overall. Since 2013,
over 200,000 models have been manufactured and sold worldwide making
BMW i3 the world’s most successful electric vehicle in the premium
compact segment.

Built with sustainability in mind, the BMW i3 is an innovation
driver for electric mobility and lightweight manufacturing techniques
at BMW Group. This knowhow has been incorporated into the fifth
generation of BMW eDrive technology that makes its UK debut in the BMW
iX3 from July 2021. BMW iX and BMW i4 will also come to market in the
UK before the end of 2021.

BMW Group will have 13 all-electric models on the road from 2023
when at least one all-electric model will be offered in approximately
90 percent of the company’s current market segments. Sales of the
company’s fully-electric models are expected to grow by over 50
percent per year in the coming years and the company will deliver
around two million all-electric vehicles globally by the end of 2025.
families and switched-on drivers looking to reduce emissions without
having to compromise on driving pleasure. Staying true to the BMW i
ethos of combining emissions-free travel with dynamic handling and
performance, the new, all-electric BMW i3 and i3s are once again
leading the charge with a larger battery cell capacity and an
increased range.

Doubling in size, the new battery on the all-electric BMW i3 and
i3s now has a capacity of 120Ah and a gross energy content of 42.2kWh.

The new i3 and i3s are about innovation and cutting-edge
technology, but they are also about style, comfort and practicality.
The introduction of the new battery also brings a new exterior colour
and a new colour for the optional interior world ‘Loft’ as well as
optional Adaptive LED headlights featuring anti-dazzle functionality.

Optional telephony with wireless charging and wireless LAN hotspot
will also be available for the BMW i3 and BMW i3s.

Larger battery capacity with no increase in battery size.
Designed and developed independently by the BMW Group as an
integral part of the eDrive technology, the batteries within the i3
and i3s are installed deep in the floor. The lithium-ion high
performance cells are combined with a cooling system that constantly
keeps the battery at optimum operating temperature, thus increasing
output and service life. The latest range of high-voltage batteries on
the new BMW i3 and i3s have increased in capacity without any increase
in size.

In real terms, this enables the BMW and the BMW i3s to achieve a
significantly further enhanced all-electric range. The official range
of the BMW i3 is 223 miles (previously 180 to 186 miles) according to
NEDC. For the BMW i3s, a range of 214 miles (previously 174 miles)
according to NEDC. This means 192 miles of driving range according to WLTP.

During everyday use, the two models are now able to cover a
distance of 160 miles – an increase of almost 30 per cent from the
previous 94Ah models. The combined power consumption of the BMW i3 is
13.1kWh per 62 miles, while the BMW i3s has a power consumption of
14.6kWh per 62 miles.

Charging
Maintaining reserves and charging the BMW i3 and i3s is fed
through high-quality electronics to allow fast and flexible charging
of the lithium-ion cells compatible with rapid-charging stations,
public charging as well as charging at home. Using rapid-charging
stations that run on DC power, the charging capacity is 50kW and this
way the high voltage battery will reach 80 per cent of its total power
in just 42 minutes.

Charging via the BMW i Wallbox enables fast charging with a
capacity of 7.4 kW. Here the time required to achieve an 80 per cent
charge of the large-capacity high-voltage battery is 4.9 hours. The
BMW i Wallbox Connect also extends the functionality of the globally
unique BMW Digital Charging Service to provide intelligent charging
for optimal cost efficiency and allows customers to make best use of
self-generated solar energy. In addition, it is also possible to
control the charging process using a smartphone app and manage usage
by means of an access card. Drivers with a registered ChargeNow card
have simple access to the UK’s largest network of public charging stations.

Meanwhile, the standard charging cable, which is designed to be
plugged into a conventional household socket, can be used to charge a
BMW i3 to up to 80 per cent of its full power in approximately 15
hours with a charging capacity of 2.3 kW

Retaining sheer driving pleasure with BMW eDrive technology.
Consistent further development of BMW’s eDrive technology has
improved the performance of both BMW i3 and i3s. The BMW i3, powered
by a 170hp electric motor, completes zero to 62mph benchmark in 7.3
seconds, while the BMW i3s with its 184hp power completes the standard
sprint in 6.9 seconds. This means that the two models both set the
benchmark for sporty performance within their segment. Both the i3 and
i3s continue with the strong performance as they approach motorway
speeds, accelerating from 50mph to 75mph in 5.1 and 4.3 seconds respectively.

BMW eDrive, the electrical drive component of BMW iPerformance
models, delivers maximum driving pleasure almost silently and without
local emissions. Three parts form the core of eDrive: the electric
motor, the lithium-ion high performance battery and intelligent energy management.

Exterior design and new packages.
The unmistakable exterior of the BMW i3 styling has already
picked up the Gold iF award for product design and the World Car
Design of the Year award along with other accolades, but new design
touches have been introduced to convey the sporty and stirring driving
experience on offer.

The trademark BMW i Black Belt running from the bonnet over the
roof to the car’s rear end is now complemented by A-pillars and roof
lines that also sport a black finish. Its characteristic shaping is
closely linked to the LifeDrive vehicle architecture, which combines
an aluminium chassis with a passenger cell made carbon fibre
reinforced plastic (CFRP). The range of paint finishes has been
extended to include Jucaro metallic with accentuations in Frozen Grey.
Mineral Grey metallic, Imperial Blue metallic, Melbourne Red metallic,
Capparis White and Fluid Black paint finishes are still available.

LED headlights are standard, while Adaptive LED headlights are
now optionally available with an automatic selective dip function for
the high beam. Innovative design and technology mean that the high
beam will give the driver increased visibility range without dazzling
other road users. This technology splits the front light cluster into
four horizontally arranged sections that can be activated and
deactivated independently of each other at speeds of over 50mph. The
high beam segments are controlled based on the traffic situation. As
soon as the front camera registers an oncoming vehicle or a vehicle
travelling ahead in the same direction, the space in which this
vehicle is located is illuminated using the low beam only. The
remaining areas of the road continue to be illuminated by the high
beam. Adaptive LED headlight functions also include the cornering
light and the high beam assistant.

Connected and environmentally friendly interior design and technology
Optional equipment now also includes telephony with wireless
charging, which allows compatible smartphones to be recharged without
use of a cable. The wireless LAN hotspot, also newly available for the
BMW i3 and the BMW i3s, provides a fast online connection for up to
ten devices inside the vehicle.

The BMW i3 and i3s go on sale from December 2018, with prices
starting from £35,180 OTR.

Munich. The BMW i3 sets standards worldwide for
driving pleasure in a purely electrically-driven vehicle. Key factors
here are not only the increased output of the motor in the new BMW
i3s, but also the innovative traction control system adapted
specifically to the instantaneous power deliver of the BMW eDrive
system. Presented for the first time in the new BMW i3s (270 Nm at 0
rpm, 135 kW / 184 HP, power consumption combined in European NEFZ
test-cycle*: 14.3 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 0 g/km), the
system improves traction and driving stability in adverse weather and
road conditions when pulling away, in active Brake Energy Regeneration
phases and when accelerating out of tight corners. At the heart of
this innovation is the control system’s 50-times-faster routine, made
possible because – unlike conventional driving stability systems – the
control process is now calculated directly in the powertrain instead
of in a remote unit requiring long signal paths. This development
provides further evidence of BMW i as a pioneer of innovative
technology within the BMW Group.

“With their high levels of torque and instantaneous responses to
every movement of the accelerator, electric motors already make
significantly higher demands on driving stability systems than
conventional power units,” explains Peter Langen, Head of Chassis
Development at BMW.

That’s why the BMW engineers developed a new type of system
geared squarely to the demands of electric mobility.
The
positive impact of these shorter control cycles is not reserved for
purely electrically driven cars; indeed, this innovative traction
control system also optimises traction, driving stability and driving
dynamics in vehicles with combustion engines. It will therefore be
fitted in BMW and MINI models with front-, rear- and all-wheel drive
to deliver noticeably greater assurance and driving pleasure when road
conditions make pulling away difficult.

the best-selling electric car in the premium compact segment. Now, the
success story is set to continue with a major refresh, new technology
and the addition of a new, sportier variant, the BMW i3s.

With a higher output, model-specific chassis technology,
enhanced handling and design features, the i3s offers driving pleasure
along with zero local emissions, premium quality and a new level of
connectivity technology.

The new BMW i3 and new BMW i3s will celebrate their world
premieres at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt/Main in
September 2017. The global market launch will begin in November 2017.

Two power outputs and optional range extender
engine
Following systematic refinement, the BMW eDrive
technology aboard the new BMW i3 and new BMW i3s offers emission-free
driving with instantaneous power delivery, efficient use of energy and
increased range. Both models draw their energy from the lithium-ion
high-voltage battery with a capacity of 94Ah (33kWh). A range-extender
engine can be ordered as an option for both models.

Emission-free fun at the wheel: two power options
The synchronous electric motor powering the new BMW i3 generates
a maximum output of 170hp and reaches a peak torque of 250Nm, all of
which is available instantly from a standstill. This means that
stepping on the accelerator pedal immediately unleashes a burst of
speed. The power is transferred via a single-speed automatic
transmission meaning the zero to 62mph benchmark sprint can be
achieved in 7.3 seconds. Top speed is limited to 93mph.

Located low in the vehicle floor, the lithium-ion high-voltage
battery provides a range of 180-186 miles* based on the NEDC cycle,
146 to 158 miles** as per WLTP and up to 125 miles*** in everyday use.
The combined electric power consumption of the new BMW i3 on the NEDC
cycle varies between 13.1 and 13.6kWh for every 62 miles*.

Outstanding driving dynamics: instantaneous torque, superb
traction and controlled drifting
The agile handling characteristics of the BMW i3 have been
improved still further by the optimised Dynamic Stability Control
(DSC) system. This faster responding traction control system
guarantees confident handling under all driving conditions. The BMW i3
now features a unique form of wheel speed limiting that ensures
increased directional stability both under acceleration and on the
overrun with strong regenerative braking. Traction during pull-away on
snow and wet roads has also been noticeably improved. DTC (Dynamic
Traction Control) mode now boosts agility at higher speeds even
allowing mild and safely controllable drifts on cornering.

A new sportier BMW - the i3s
The new BMW i3s is powered by a high-performance 184hp electric
motor that generates peak torque of 270Nm. Its updated drive system
includes modified motor control and specific taper roller bearings,
which have been utilised to further optimise power delivery and the
performance curve at higher rpm. At the limits of the motor speed
range, the power and torque of the further developed drive system
represent an improvement of up to 40 per cent for the BMW i3.

What’s more, the new BMW i3s boasts sports suspension with
specially developed springs, dampers and anti-roll bars. Drivers can
also select SPORT mode using the Driving Experience Control switch
which delivers a more direct accelerator response and tighter steering characteristics.

The new BMW i3s utilises sports suspension that includes a 10mm
drop in ride height. The additional 40mm of track width compared to
the BMW i3 is given added impact by the black wheel arch borders. The
new BMW i3s comes as standard with exclusive 20-inch light-alloy
wheels in double-spoke design that are 20mm wider than the previously
available versions. They come as standard in Bicolour and are
optionally available in Jet Black.

The BMW i3s is capable of get from zero to 62mph in 6.9 seconds
on its way to a top speed of 99mph. It returns a combined electric
power consumption of 14.3kWh per 62 miles* on the NEDC cycle. Its
electric range runs to 174 miles* based on the NEDC cycle, 146 to 152
miles** as per WLTP and up to 125 miles*** in everyday use.

A 38hp two-cylinder range extender petrol engine is available as
an option for both the new BMW i3 and the new BMW i3s. The engine
drives a generator that produces power as required while driving to
maintain a constant level of charge in the high-voltage battery. This
extends the car’s overall range in everyday use by 93 miles,
increasing it from around 112 miles to a maximum of 205 miles***. The
all-electric range of the new BMW i3 with range extender is 140 – 146
miles* as per NEDC and 118 – 124 miles** as per WLTP. The
corresponding figures for the new BMW i3s with range extender come in
at 137 miles* on the NEDC and 115 to 121 miles** on the WLTP cycle.

On the NEDC cycle, the new BMW i3 with range extender returns
combined consumption figures per 62 miles of 11.9kWh to 11.5kWh of
electric power and 0.6 litres of fuel (CO2 emissions: 14 –13 g/km)*.
On the same combined NEDC cycle, the new BMW i3s with range extender
consumes 12.5kWh of electric power per 62 miles and 0.7 litres of fuel
(fuel consumption of 403.5mpg imp; CO2 emissions: 14 g/km)*.

Design: sporty look.
The unmistakable exterior of the BMW i3 styling has already
picked up the Gold iF award for product design and the World Car
Design of the Year award along with other accolades, but new deft
design touches have been introduced to convey the sporty and stirring
driving experience on offer.

The trademark BMW i Black Belt running from the bonnet over the
roof to the car’s rear end is now complemented by A-pillars and roof
lines that also sport a black finish. The range of paint finishes for
the remaining body elements has been extended to include Melbourne Red
metallic and Imperial Blue metallic. Customers can also choose from
the non-metallic shades Capparis White and Fluid Black as well as
Protonic Blue metallic and Mineral Grey metallic.

The restyling of the front and rear aprons place particular
emphasis on the car’s width to give a sportier look and a
chrome-design strip running across the full width of the rear and the
positioning of the model and eDrive badges on the outer edges of the
boot lid serves to reinforce this impression.

The new BMW i3 and new BMW i3s come equipped with all-LED
headlights as standard, which employ LED bulb units for dipped beam
and high beam as well as the daytime running lights. The new turn
signal indicators also feature LED technology and are integrated into
the front apron in the form of horizontal strips. This means that LEDs
are now used for all lighting functions at the front of the vehicle
too, as was already the case with the glass-covered rear light
assemblies.

At the front the sporty theme continues. The front bumper is
painted in the body colour and has a black U-shaped surround. Moving
round to the rear end, the moulded contours and the contrast in colour
between the black surround and the body-coloured inlay again create an
energetic appearance. The new silver-coloured roof line accent for the
new BMW i3 adds a further touch of elegance and dynamism. It widens
towards the rear, thereby accentuating the stream flow.

Both the front and rear aprons are notable for their
model-specific, powerfully shaped contours. At the front, the bumper
inlay, as well as the U-shaped surround that encircles it, has a black
finish. The front apron’s side sections are bordered on their lower
edge by accent strips in BMW i Blue or Frozen Grey to further
emphasise the width of the car. The accent in the closed BMW kidney
grille is painted in high-gloss black on the BMW i3s to give the
grille a larger and more prominent appearance. The rear apron of the
new BMW i3s is likewise composed of individually styled contours,
while the black surround frames an extra-wide, body-coloured inlay. On
the new BMW i3s, the roof line accent also sports the same high-gloss
black finish as the A-pillars.

Interior: a sense of roominess with sustainable materials.
Like the exterior design, the interior styling of the new BMW i3
and new BMW i3s is rooted in the novel LifeDrive vehicle architecture.
The carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell has a light
and spacious feel. The design principle of the two four-seater models
means there is no need for either fixed B-pillars or a transmission
tunnel. Doors that open in opposite directions allow the occupants to
get in and out with ease.

The Loft, Lodge and Suite equipment lines are available for the
new BMW i3 and new BMW i3s as alternatives to the standard Atelier
version. The Lodge interior design option includes a new covering for
the seat surfaces in Solaric Brown that combines natural leather
tanned using an olive leaf extract with a wool-based textile material.
The i3 and i3s feature recycled plastics, renewable raw materials,
natural fibres and open-pored, unbleached eucalyptus wood. More than
80 per cent of the surfaces visible to the passengers are made from
recycled materials or renewable resources. The new blue seat belt
option provides a splash of colour while BMW i3s offers front floor
mats with unique badging as standard.

Extensive range of driver assistance systems
Both Parking Assistant and Traffic Jam Assistant are available
for the new BMW i3. The optional Parking Assistance package includes
Park Distance Control, a reversing camera and the Parking Assistant.
Once a suitable parking space parallel to the road has been selected,
the Parking Assistant takes control of acceleration, braking, gear
selection and steering.

Driving Assistant Plus, also available as an option,
incorporates Collision and Pedestrian Warning with City Braking
function, Speed Limit Info, Proactive Driving Assistant, Active Cruise
Control with Stop & Go function, and the Traffic Jam assistant,
which not only maintains a safe distance to the car in front in
stop-start traffic at up to 37mph, but also keeps the car in lane. The
system takes its cues from lane markings, the width of the road and
vehicles travelling ahead.

Updated iDrive system, BMW i ConnectedDrive with navigation
features and On-Street Parking Information specially developed for
electric mobility.
Both the new BMW i3 and new BMW
i3s come with an updated version of the iDrive operating system for
infotainment, communications and navigation functions. All vehicles
are now equipped with the Navigation system Professional, where the
Control Display has a diagonal of 10.25-inches and an increased
resolution of 1,440 × 540 pixels. The main menu is also presented in
the form of horizontally arranged tiles with a live mode. The voice
recognition system has also been further optimised. With the aid of
Natural Language Understanding, spoken instructions can now be
executed more quickly and precisely, e.g. when searching for music and
phone numbers or dictating e-mails and SMS messages. New to the
options list is Apple CarPlay preparation. This allows additional
smartphone apps to be integrated seamlessly with the vehicle’s
operating system.

The further expanded BMW i ConnectedDrive ensures intelligent
connectivity through services specially tailored to electric mobility.
The digital On-Street Parking Information search service, now
available for the first time in the BMW i3, can also be used alongside
the Real Time Traffic Information. Public charging stations and
information about their availability can also be displayed on the
navigation system’s map. When route guidance is activated, data about
the route is also used to calculate the range shown in the instrument
cluster. The range map provides a visual representation of the current
operating radius. It is also possible to display the different ranges
achievable in each of the Driving Experience Control modes. BMW
i-specific navigation features also include intermodal route guidance.
This helps users to quickly and efficiently reach their destination by
factoring in local public transport timetables and connections.
Regular, automatic updates of the navigation data are now also
provided “over the air” in the BMW i3, using a mobile network connection.

A package of new services were introduced in July 2017 under the
BMW Connected+ banner which enable a highly personalised and more
straightforward display of information inside the car. All of the
digital services related to BMW Connected and BMW Connected+ will be
available in the BMW i3 and BMW i3s. These span intelligent route
planning, including breaks at charging stations or petrol stations
(Send my Routes to Car), sharing of the car’s current location via SMS
and live link (Share Live Trip Status), personalised display of
relevant in-car information (BMW Onboard), seamless transfer of route
instructions to the customer’s smartphone or smartwatch once the car
is parked (Navigate Door-to-Door) and direct syncing of contacts and
addresses to the navigation system (My Destinations).

BMW Digital Charging Service enables intelligent charging. BMW
ConnectedDrive and the BMW ConnectedDrive Portal turns charging into a
digital experience. As a result, the BMW i3 and BMW i3s are integrated
perfectly into the customer’s smart ecosystem. This allows BMW
customers to optimise charging costs, make best use of self-generated
solar energy for charging and even earn money through integration into
the smart grid. The service’s ease of use – from a smartphone via BMW
Connected or from desktop and tablets via the BMW ConnectedDrive
Portal – also facilitates fully transparent, sustainable use of
renewable energy.

360° ELECTRIC: new charging cable, BMW i Wallbox

360° ELECTRIC is a range of products and services that help make
electric mobility a convenient, everyday experience. The functionality
of the standard charging cable supplied with the new BMW i3s has been
optimised and includes a temperature sensor. Charging at home using
the BMW i Wallbox can supply 11kW of power to charge the high-voltage
battery. This allows enough energy for an electric range of around 112
miles to be transferred in under three hours – five times quicker than
with the standard charging cable. The new BMW i Wallbox Connect also
extends the functionality of the globally unique BMW Digital Charging
Service to provide intelligent charging for optimal cost efficiency,
and allows customers to make best use of self-generated solar energy.
In addition, it is also possible to control the charging process using
a smartphone app and manage usage by means of an access card. Drivers
with a registered ChargeNow card have unrestricted access to the
world’s largest network of public charging stations.

Car award at the New York International Auto Show.

“We are delighted and honoured that the BMW i3 has been
recognized as the World Urban Car of the Year,” said Ludwig Willisch,
Head of BMW Group Region Americas. “This award highlights BMW Group’s
commitment to sustainable mobility through BMW’s first all-electric
vehicle made primarily of carbon fibre. The design brief for the BMW
i3 was to create a Mega City Vehicle for the cities of the future.
Today, the new 2017 BMW i3 94Ah provides more range, paired with a
high-level of dynamic performance, making it the perfect urban vehicle
for people around the world.” Launched in 2014, the born electric BMW
i3 represents a new era of electro mobility offering a visionary
design, a ground-breaking vehicle architecture, dynamic performance
and innovative connectivity. No other car represents such a holistic
approach to sustainability throughout the value chain.

World Car vice-chairman, Mike Rutherford, commented: “It's an
award whose time has come. Everyday cars in many - perhaps most -
parts of the world will have to become smaller if road and parking
space is to be found for them in increasingly packed towns and cities
whose populations are swelling annually. This year's winner in our
inaugural World Urban Car category proves that these small vehicles
don't have to be cheap, undesirable and unpleasant to drive. Quite the
opposite. It is among the best value-for-money products on the market”.

The BMW i3 94Ah offers 50 per cent increased battery capacity
(33kWh) thanks to the higher energy density of the lithium ion cells.
The BMW i team have worked to ensure that the battery dimensions
remain unchanged while still offering a significant range increase.
The driving performance figures of the 170hp AC synchronous electric
motor remain virtually unchanged. The motor propels the BMW i3 from
zero to 62mph in just 7.3 seconds making the BMW i3 the sportiest and
most efficient electric vehicle in the premium segment.

Over 100,000 BMW purely electric-powered cars and plug-in hybrids sold to customers worldwide.</pp:summary>

On Saturday 5 November, BMW will be making an appearance as part of
the Go Ultra Low stand at the Regent Street Motor Show. The stand will
showcase the latest electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles including the
BMW i3 Battery Electric Vehicle and BMW’s most advanced sports car,
the BMW i8.

More than 100,000 BMW purely electric-powered cars and plug-in
hybrids have been sold to customers worldwide with the BMW i3
accounting for more than 60,000 units. This makes the BMW i3 the most
successful electric vehicle in the premium compact segment. In the UK,
close to 6,000 units of the BMW i3 have been sold since its launch in
2013. The BMW i3 with Range Extender remains the volume model however
since the launch of the BMW i3 94Ah, the pure electric model has
increased in popularity.

Meanwhile, the BMW i8 ranks first among electrified sports cars, with
more than 10,000 delivered worldwide since the middle of 2014, of
which 17 per cent are UK sales. Additionally, there are the
approximately 30,000 plug-in hybrids sold to date; known today under
the label BMW iPerformance. These reflect the successful broad-based
transfer of BMW i technology.

The Regent Street Motor Show is a free motor show in central London.
The street is fully pedestrianised from Piccadilly Circus to Oxford
Circus. Displaying over 300 cars spanning 125 years of motoring, from
the earliest 19th Century veterans to the cars of the future.

BMW’s presence at The Regent Street Motor Show comes as part of our
continued commitment to the Go Ultra Low campaign, which exists to
help motorists understand the benefits, cost savings and capabilities
of the raft of electric vehicles on the market. The collaborative
campaign is the first of its kind, bringing together a consortium of
vehicle manufacturers, government and the Society of Motor
Manufacturers and Traders.
