by BMW headquarters in Germany. No adaptions have been made to cater
to the UK market.

Munich/Las Vegas. The BMW Group presents the driving
and user experience of the future at the Consumer Electronics Show
(CES) 2025 in Las Vegas. BMW is providing the first opportunity to
experience the close-to-production version of the new BMW iDrive –
complete with its centrepiece, BMW Panoramic Vision – at the event.
The software underpinning it all is the new BMW Operating System X,
which acts as the intelligence hub behind the new display and
operating concept. The holistic system, with its modern, style-shaping
design, will be introduced in all new BMW models from the end of
2025.
“High tech meets highly intuitive operation – a quarter of
a century of pioneering work and technological leadership in operating
concepts has been channelled into the new BMW Panoramic iDrive,” says
Frank Weber, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG,
responsible for Development.
“The foundations are
provided by the new BMW Operating System X. With this advance, we are
giving one of the world’s best and most comprehensive infotainment
systems even greater capability and once again setting the industry
benchmark in multimodal interaction. Starting with the first
series-produced Neue Klasse model at the end of this year, the new BMW
Panoramic iDrive will form an integral part of all future BMW models.”

Four elements, one goal: consistent driver focus in
characteristic BMW style.
The new BMW iDrive merges
four central elements into a unique display and operating concept.

BMW Panoramic Vision – a Head-Up Display concept
newly developed by BMW for projecting content – reflects visible
information from A-pillar to A-pillar onto a black printed surface
in the lower section of the windscreen. This information is visible
to all occupants.
The most important driving information is
projected directly into the driver's line of sight on the left-hand
side of the BMW Panoramic Vision (in left-hand-drive cars), above
the steering wheel. The driver can personalise the content in the
central and right-hand areas of the BMW Panoramic Vision via the
central display. The integration of the BMW Panoramic Vision creates
a 3D effect for the driver and passengers.

The new and optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display above
the BMW Panoramic Vision now shows integrated navigation and
automated driving information directly in the driver’s field of
vision. The content in the BMW Panoramic Vision and BMW 3D Head-Up
Display is presented in a neatly coordinated way.
The level of
innovation achieved by the two Head-Up display technologies is
underlined by several patent applications from the BMW Group
resulting from the development of these projection technologies.

On the central display with matrix backlight
technology, the familiar, updated menu structure with QuickSelect
ensures optimal operation of the functions and content by touch.
Operation is very easy and convenient, as the free-cut-design
display is located close to the steering wheel in an ergonomically
ideal position. Selected content (widgets) can be carried over to
the BMW Panoramic Vision with a swipe on the central display. As
many as six widgets are possible and they can be arranged as desired
in the BMW Panoramic Vision.

The new multifunction steering wheel uses BMW’s
shy-tech approach, whereby the relevant buttons are illuminated to
highlight available functions. The steering wheel serves as the
primary physical control, and its buttons provide active haptic
feedback. The buttons have a well-judged, relief-like surface, which
makes them extremely easy to locate and means the driver can press
them without needing to divert their gaze away from the
road.
The arrangement of the buttons follows the familiar
principle of driver assistance functions being positioned on the
left-hand side of the steering wheel and content-controlling
functions on the right-hand side.

The combination of these four elements re-interprets BMW’s customary
“hands on the wheel, eyes on the road” approach, with which BMW sets
the benchmark for driver focus and presents a unique form of
intuitive, use-friendly and ergonomically optimised operation. The BMW
Panoramic iDrive always gives the driver the right information in the
right place and at the right time. The system continues the approach
of using an optimal combination of analogue and digital controls
through the use of switches, buttons, touch and voice control. There
are haptic switches for the windscreen wipers, turn signal indicators,
exterior mirrors, volume control, gear selectors and window de-icers.
Other functions are optimised for operation using touch/voice control
or via the multifunction steering wheel, such as telephone functions,
media control systems, navigation, assisted driving, personalisation
of displays, selection of MyModes and much more besides.

Alongside data-driven learnings on the use of BMW Operating Systems
across the global fleet of now more than 22 million connected BMW
vehicles, the development phase of the new BMW Panoramic iDrive also
included numerous studies conducted in the BMW Group’s usability labs,
in which around 3,000 customers were involved. Every decision on the
various aspects of the operating logic is therefore based on data and
made in a structured manner. Here, the user experience’s extended
scope for personalisation has also been aligned with customer
preferences and requirements.

BMW Operating System X: intelligent, versatile, fit for the
future.
The new BMW Operating System X represents an
update of the latest operating system, as used in many BMW models, and
is a wholly in-house development from BMW. Like BMW Operating System
9, it is based on an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software
stack. It offers even greater update and upgrade capability than the
predecessor system, making it both fit for the future and backwards
compatible. It is ready to accommodate additional functions and will
keep vehicles equipped with the new BMW Panoramic iDrive at the
cutting edge of technology over a long period of time.
“The
overall concept of the new BMW Panoramic iDrive with Operating System
X has been enabled by a large technological leap forward,”
says Stephan Durach Senior Vice President Connected Company
BMW Group. “It offers intuitive operation, emotionally
engaging experiences and specific personalisation. The new BMW iDrive
with Operating System X demonstrates the potential of a
software-defined vehicle.”

The expanded intelligence of BMW Operating System X makes it possible
to combine the BMW Panoramic Vision, optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display,
central display and multifunction steering wheel with one another in
such a way that physical and digital experiences merge. For example,
an incoming call initially brings up a graphic on the BMW Panoramic
Vision. At the same time, a symbol on the relevant steering wheel
button that was not previously visible is illuminated in green,
indicating the option of taking the call by pressing the button or
rejecting it with a swipe on the right-hand side of the steering
wheel.
When a navigation destination is entered by touch control
or voice command, route guidance alerts are shown on the BMW 3D
Head-Up Display and further information on roads and junctions on the
BMW Panoramic Vision. A whole map overview can be shown on the central
display at any time for broader-scale orientation.

The personalisation of content reaches a new level with BMW Operating
System X. The displays in the Panoramic Vision can be adapted to
personal preferences. In addition, drivers now also have the option of
choosing their own settings for driving attributes such as response
and steering characteristics in the My Mode “Personal”. Moreover,
pictures chosen by the user can be uploaded as backgrounds for the
Central Display and the colourway of the Ambient Lighting and user
interface design adjusted to their particular preferences, creating an
even more personalised driving experience.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant responds in the accustomed way
to the prompt “Hey BMW” or can be called up by pressing the respective
button on the multifunction steering wheel. The capabilities of the
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant are being constantly enhanced and
will be taken to a whole new level for the Neue Klasse through the
integration of Large Language Models (LLM). The use of this technology
is focused initially on navigation, allowing the customer to give more
extensive spoken commands using natural language: for example: “Take
me to a charging station which is close to a food store.” At
technology partner Amazon’s booth at CES 2025, visitors can get an
initial impression of these capabilities using a beta version of this
build of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant in a BMW X3.

As with the current infotainment systems from BMW, the BMW
Intelligent Personal Assistant can – if the driver desires – make
suggestions proactively based on user behaviour. This intelligence
expands further with BMW Operating System X. In relevant situations,
the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant highlights driver assistance
systems, which are rarely used by the driver. As a kind of reminder,
the system suggests activating Sport Mode on suitable routes if the
driver has already activated Sport Mode independently beforehand. If
the driver doesn’t respond to or ignores these proactive suggestions
several times, the system learns and refrains from making suggestions
from then on.

BMW Operating System X carries over the scope for integration of
third-party apps from the previous infotainment generation. As things
stand, the BMW ConnectedDrive Store offers more than 60 apps worldwide
for BMW Operating System 9. The selection will continue to grow, e.g.
with productivity apps such as video conferencing service Zoom.

Design and technology for a unique user and driving
experience.
The new BMW Panoramic iDrive is scalable and
will be integrated into all new BMW models – across all vehicle
segments and with all drive system technologies – from the end of 2025.

The driving experience takes centre stage. The driver should feel at
ease and have full control over the vehicle. This principle is
reflected in the design of the new BMW Panoramic iDrive. Particular
attention is paid to the details: the user interface has been designed
as intuitively and adaptively as possible to ensure seamless
interaction. The result is a holistic experience enhanced by a
harmonious combination of sound, light and innovative design. Every
journey becomes a special moment of connection between human and
vehicle.
“Technology and customer preferences are changing more
quickly than ever. The design of digital experiences and sound is
playing an ever more important role,” says Adrian van
Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “The new
BMW Panoramic iDrive not only makes our vehicles smarter and more
user-friendly, it also enables much more extensive personalisation,
which turns every new BMW into a car that is very much the user’s
own.”
Another element in the holistic experience provided by the
BMW Panoramic iDrive is the new HypersonX sound experience in the Neue
Klasse models. Developed by the BMW Group Sound Design Studio, it
comprises 43 sound signals and special driving sounds for Personal
Mode and Sport Mode. The multi-dimensional spectrum adapts the sounds
precisely to the driving situation at hand and, in so doing, creates
an emotional interaction between the driver and their BMW.

Press Contact: Chris Overall
Tel: +447815370990
E-mail: chris.overall@bmw.co.uk

Press Release,Research & Development,Drive Technologies,Mobility of the future,ConnectedDrive,Driver Assistance,Infotainment & Entertainment

Munich. The number of BMW Remote Software Upgrades
successfully installed by the BMW Group passed the 10 million mark at
the end of September. These upgrades are transmitted over the air to
the vehicles and then launched by the customer.

“Today, BMW is able to deliver over-the-air updates to more than
nine million vehicles worldwide. And we can update the entire vehicle
software in this way,” states Christoph Grote, Senior Vice President
Electronics and Software BMW Group. “This capability clearly
demonstrates our expertise in the field of software-defined vehicles.
The fact that ten million Remote Software Upgrades have now been
carried out in vehicles underlines how popular this form of innovation
is with our customers.”

BMW sent out its first over-the-air upgrade five years ago. This
functionality has since been extended to all brands, model series and
drive types. The arrival of the new Operating System 9 means that MINI
models can also be updated remotely, as can the Rolls-Royce Spectre.
“The Remote Software Upgrade facility allows us to keep improving our
vehicles without the need for a workshop visit,” Grote continues.
“This brings greater comfort and safety for our customers and also
offers them new features and functional improvements from time to time.”

Indeed, the BMW Remote Software Upgrade technology has enabled
numerous new functions and functional improvements to be rolled out to
customer vehicles. In addition to comfort and safety features, the
updates have also benefited infotainment, driving, drive system and
driver assistance capability. A recent customer study confirmed the
importance of regular updates for product enhancement.

The BMW Group is set to build on its leading position in this
area over the coming weeks and months with a series of further
upgrades including attractive model-specific features such as a Silent
Mode1) and a new Curve Ahead View2) in the
Head-Up Display for ‘seeing around bends’ virtually.

Connectivity is turning cars into smart mobility
partners.
The BMW Group is a pioneering force in the
field of connected driving. BMW has set the standard for the rest of
the industry with over 22 million connected vehicles worldwide to
date. Functions that have been purpose developed for electric vehicles
– such as "Max Range" for maximising operating range and
charging-optimised route planning – provide innovative solutions for
everyday driving. With the introduction of digital premium vehicle
features of this kind, the BMW Group proves time and again that
compelling digital innovation and customer centricity are firmly
embedded in the company’s DNA.
Munich. The feeling of an M car is unmistakable – and
now it can be tailored even more closely to the individual. BMW M GmbH
is unveiling a new display and control system for the configuration of
the powertrain, chassis and driver assistance systems on its
high-performance sports cars. As well as additional scope for adapting
the vehicle settings both to the situation at hand and to personal
preferences using the Setup button, drivers will also enjoy the
services of the new M Mode (activated at the touch of a button). The
Setup button can be used to adjust the vehicle settings, while M Mode
allows the displays and driver assistance systems to be tuned to the
driver’s requirements. This extra individualisation and even more
intuitive operation will be included for the first time in the new BMW
M8 Coupe and BMW M8 Competition Coupe (fuel consumption combined: 10.6
– 10.5 l/100 km [26.7 – 26.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 242 –
238 g/km; provisional figures), and the new BMW M8 Convertible and BMW
M8 Competition Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 10.8 – 10.6
l/100 km [26.2 – 26.7 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 246 – 241
g/km; provisional figures). With the help of these new features,
drivers of BMW’s high-performance models for the luxury segment can
enjoy their exceptional range of abilities – from supreme
long-distance comfort to alluring track dynamics – in even greater depth.

The control system developed for BMW M models traditionally enables
their powertrain and chassis technology to be configured in a wide
variety of ways according to personal tastes and needs. Indeed, the
driver can activate various settings for the engine, suspension and
steering independently of one another. In models specified with the M
xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the distribution of power between the
front and rear wheels can also be tweaked. And now the new BMW M8
Coupe and new BMW M8 Convertible offer the ability to configure the
braking system as required, too.

New Setup button enables intuitive operation with direct
access to all powertrain and chassis systems.

The new Setup button on the centre console of the new BMW M8 Coupe
and new BMW M8 Convertible enables direct access to all available
setup options for five vehicle parameters. Pressing the button brings
up a Setup menu in the Control Display, which offers an overview of
the vehicle settings currently engaged. The driver can then activate
their desired mode for the engine, suspension, steering, brakes and M
xDrive – in a single step in each case – via the touchscreen or the
iDrive Controller.

The engine characteristics can be adjusted by means of the EFFICIENT,
SPORT and SPORT PLUS settings, while the COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT PLUS
chassis options give access to the three profiles for the
electronically controlled dampers. The driver can also choose between
COMFORT and SPORT for both the M-specific electromechanical steering
and the new braking system. When DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) is
deactivated, the 4WD, 4WD SPORT and 2WD (for pure rear-wheel drive)
settings for the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system also come into play.
Two individually composed variants of this setup can be stored
permanently with the driver’s preferred settings for the engine sound,
gearshift characteristics, driving stability control and Auto Start
Stop function. The overall vehicle configuration can then be called up
instantly at any time by pressing one of the two M buttons on the
steering wheel.

Premiere in the BMW M8: integrated braking system with precise
pedal feel and M-specific configurability.

The M-specific version of a new braking technology paves the way for
the configuration of braking characteristics, a feature available for
the first time in the new BMW M8. The new system brings together the
brake activation, brake booster and braking control functions within a
compact module. The integrated braking system reduces weight by around
two kilograms and employs a vacuum-free brake booster to enhance the
car’s overall efficiency. The brake pressure required is triggered by
an electric actuator, which allows it to be generated more dynamically
and also ensures significantly faster and more precise interventions
from the driving stability control system.

The integrated braking system also does an excellent job of allowing
vehicle deceleration to be geared precisely to the driver’s
requirements and of generating sublime pedal feel in any situation.
Braking feedback to the driver is unimpaired by wet road surfaces,
significant lateral acceleration or high brake temperatures, and this
ensures precise metering of braking power at all times. The version of
the new braking system developed for BMW M models also presents the
driver with two pedal feel settings.

COMFORT and SPORT modes alter the amount of pressure on the brake
pedal required to slow the car. This allows the driver to choose
between a comfort-oriented perception of the braking process and a
particularly direct, instantaneous response to applications of the
pedal. The new BMW M8 teams this innovative system with both the
standard M compound brakes and optional M carbon-ceramic brakes.

Pure driving pleasure through innovation: the M Mode button.

In addition to the new configuration options opened up by the Setup
button, the new BMW M8 also allows the gearshift characteristics of
the eight-speed Steptronic transmission to be adjusted using the
Drivelogic button on the selector lever and the engine sound to be
varied via a separate button on the centre console. M Dynamic Mode –
which raises the intervention thresholds for the driving stability
control and allows controlled drifts – and DSC Off mode can also be
initiated at the touch of a button.

A fresh addition to the new flagship models from BMW M GmbH is the M
Mode button on the centre console. This can be used to alter the
responses of the driver assistance systems and the screens in the
all-digital instrument cluster and Head-Up Display. M Mode allows the
driver to activate ROAD and SPORT modes, while the new BMW M8
Competition Coupe and BMW M8 Competition Convertible also come with a
TRACK setting. These options enhance the hallmark M driving experience
according to the situation at hand. Changing the settings alters the
information presented to the driver on the screens, while the
safety-enhancing interventions by the driver assistance systems – such
as active braking or steering inputs – are reduced to a bare minimum
or deactivated altogether.

In the default ROAD setting, all the standard and optional driver
assistance systems are fully activated. A simple press of the M Mode
button engages the SPORT setting, in which the active driver
assistance systems (in the configuration set by the driver) now only
transmit alerts on speed limits and overtaking restrictions. This mode
disables all interventions in the braking and steering systems, aside
from those made by the Collision Warning with braking function and the
Evasion Assistant.

In SPORT mode, the driver benefits from M View in both the instrument
cluster and the Head-Up Display. Here, only relevant information for
sporty driving – i.e. an M-specific engine speed dial and the shift
lights (which indicate the ideal time to change gear), a digital speed
display and the gear currently engaged – is displayed in the cockpit.
Information on coolant temperature, charge pressure, tyre condition,
and longitudinal and lateral acceleration can be viewed in the right-
and left-hand areas of the instrument cluster. The Head-Up Display
read-out is concentrated around the engine revs and shift lights,
navigation instructions and distance warnings, the gear selected and
the vehicle speed, plus the speed limits and overtaking restrictions
detected by the Speed Limit Info system. Pressing the M Mode button
again returns the driver to the default ROAD mode.

An extended press of the M Mode button engages TRACK mode, which is
available in the Competition models and designed exclusively for use
on race circuits. The decision to activate this mode must be confirmed
using the iDrive Controller. In this setting, all the comfort and
safety functions of the driver assistance systems are deactivated. In
addition, the audio system and Control Display are both switched off
in order to focus the driver’s attention even more intently on the
road ahead. TRACK mode allows drivers of the new BMW M8 Competition
Coupe and new BMW M8 Competition Convertible to experience an
ultra-pure, racing-car-inspired distillation of M feeling. Added to
which, the instrument cluster and Head-Up Display also include M View,
although TRACK mode blanks out the road sign detection and distance
information. Pressing the M Mode button again takes the car out of the
TRACK setting and back into ROAD mode.

Vehicle with the new fourth-generation X5. Combining an elegant and
strong design with supreme on-and off-road ability, the new X5 has an
even greater blend of premium luxury performance and comfort. It’s a
winning formula with previous generations selling in excess of 2.2
million examples since the first X5 launched in 1999.

On sale in the UK from June 2018, the all-new X5 demonstrates
the latest BMW advances in technology, design and safety, with the
highest level of autonomous capability yet seen on a BMW X model. A
choice of TwinPower and M Performance petrol and diesel engines are
matched to a new eight-speed Steptronic gearbox and the latest version
of xDrive for maximum comfort, capability and performance.

Design.
With a wheelbase 42mm longer than its
predecessor, an increase in vehicle length of 36mm, an extra 66mm of
width and a 19mm increase in height, the new BMW X5 has both an
imposing appearance and generous levels of space for passengers and
their luggage.

Distinctive design features mark out the xLine and M Sport model
variants of the new X5. The xLine model adds kidney grille bars in
aluminium matt, roof rails and side window surrounds in satin
Aluminium, plus other accents in Pearl-effect Chrome. M Sport
specification, meanwhile, sees the wheel arch trim, bumper trim, rear
underguard and side skirts painted in body colour, plus extra-large
air intakes at the front end, aluminium matt kidney grille bars. The
roof rails, side window surrounds and other trim elements in
high-gloss black flag up the dynamic potential of the SAV.

The new BMW X5 comes as standard with 19-inch light-alloy wheels
on the xLine model, 20-inch M star-spoke light-alloy wheels on the M
Sport model and exclusive 22-inch V-spoke alloy wheels on the M
Performance model. Further variants in 20 to 22-inch formats are
available as options.

Powertrain and driving experience.
There will
be one petrol and two diesel units available from the latest
generation of engines. The BMW X5 M50d is powered by a six-cylinder
in-line diesel engine with four turbochargers. A six-cylinder inline
unit powers the BMW X5 xDrive40i and BMW X5 xDrive30d. All engines
channel their power through an eight-speed Steptronic transmission,
while BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive is on hand to ensure that
power is translated into secure progress – on or off road.

The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology package for the petrol
engines comprises turbochargers, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC
fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing.
On the diesel side, the raft of technological measures at work
includes turbochargers and common-rail direct injection with piezo
injectors. The result is instantaneous pulling power and sporty
performance credentials with exemplary fuel consumption and emissions.
All model variants comply with the requirements of the EU6d-TEMP
emissions standard. The system of emission control for the petrol
engines includes a gasoline particulate filter, while the diesel
models boast BMW BluePerformance technology comprising a particulate
filter, an oxidation catalyst, a NOx adsorption catalyst and an SCR
catalyst with AdBlue injection.

The power unit fitted in the new BMW X5 xDrive40i enjoys
free-revving ability and eager response. The 3.0-litre unit employs a
twin-scroll turbocharger and direct petrol injection technology with a
maximum pressure of 350 bar. The straight-six generates its maximum
output of 340hp, while the peak torque of 450Nm is available. The new
BMW X5 xDrive40i completes the zero to 62mph sprint in just 5.5
seconds. Fuel consumption averages 33.2mpg and CO2
emissions are 193g/km.

The performance of the new BMW X5 M50d is provided by the potent
engine at work under its bonnet. From its 3.0-litre displacement the
BMW M Performance model’s six-cylinder in-line unit delivers a peak
output of 400hp and generates maximum torque of 760Nm.

These figures are possible thanks to a multi-stage turbocharging
system composed of two high-pressure and two low-pressure
turbochargers delivering over 450Nm of torque. In normal driving
situations, both low-pressure turbochargers and one of the two
high-pressure units are permanently active. The second high-pressure
turbocharger only joins in when the engine speed tops 2,500rpm. Under
hard acceleration from idle, flaps are adjusted so the pair of
low-pressure turbochargers can be swiftly bypassed, thereby generating
maximum charge pressure with even less delay. To boost the
turbocharging system’s efficiency, exhaust gas recirculation is
employed for both the high-pressure and low-pressure stages and the
common-rail direct injection system capable of generating pressures in
excess of 2,500 bar. The new BMW X5 M50d darts to 62mph from rest in
5.2 seconds yet it succeeds in posting a combined fuel consumption of
41.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 179g/km.

The new BMW X5 xDrive30d is also powered by a straight-six
diesel engine, this time with displacement of 3.0 litres and featuring
a single turbocharger with variable inlet geometry. The common-rail
direct injection system propels fuel into the combustion chambers at
up to 2,500 bar. Maximum output of 265hp, while offering 620Nm of
torque. Capable of reaching the 62mph mark from rest in 6.5 seconds,
the new X5 xDrive30d returns combined fuel consumption of just
470mpg, equating to CO2 emissions of 158g/km*.

*Electronically limited

** All figures are provisional

All of the engines available for the new BMW X5 come with a new,
improved version of the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, whose
wider ratio spread and new control electronics help to increase the
powertrain’s overall efficiency. New torsion dampers reduce rotational
irregularities and converter slip for superior shift comfort, while
optimised hydraulic control enables even

Efficiency-enhanced xDrive all-wheel
drive.
The task of maximising traction, agility and
directional stability in the new BMW X5 falls to the latest generation
of the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system, which is now
able to split drive torque between the front and rear wheels with even
greater precision and speed on demand.

The new xDrive system also offers a rear-biased set-up for those
occasions when the driver adopts a particularly dynamic approach. The
electronically controlled rear differential lock (available on M
Performance models and/or in conjunction with the Off-Road package)
gives the handling an even sportier edge. Governed by the Driving
Stability Control (DSC) system, the locking function for the rear
differential improves traction and power transmission when driving
over loose ground or on road surfaces offering differing levels of
grip for the left-rear and right-rear wheels. The locking effect is
produced by means of an electric motor and allows as much as 1,500Nm
of drive torque to be redirected from the faster-turning wheel to the
slower-turning wheel.

New chassis systems.
The design principle
underpinning the chassis – based on a double-wishbone front axle and a
five-link rear axle – is complemented by the standard Dynamic Damper
Control system, whose electronically controlled dampers sharpen the
car’s handling dynamics at the same time as increasing ride and
suspension comfort. The driver can select from two performance maps
for a more comfort-oriented or sportier driving style, using the
Driving Experience Control switch. Standard specification for the new
BMW X5 M50d includes model-specific kinematics and elastokinematics
for the wheel suspension, individual spring and damper tuning, plus
22-inch M light-alloy wheels. This bespoke configuration increases the
BMW M Performance model’s agility and steering precision, enables
faster cornering and optimises its transitional responses.

An array of chassis systems available in a BMW X model make it
possible to boost the off-road performance, sportiness or comfort of
the new BMW X5. Adaptive M suspension Professional with active roll
stabilisation and Integral Active Steering endows the car with
exceptionally agile and dynamic driving qualities. The roll
stabilisation system employs electric swivel motors to enable
remarkably swift and precise compensation of body roll under dynamic
cornering. Integral Active Steering (also available as an individual
option) is also operated electromechanically. By turning the rear
wheels in either the same direction as the front wheels or the
opposite direction – depending on the vehicle speed – it optimises
cornering agility, ensures effortless lane changes and helps the
vehicle to dart through city traffic.

The two-axle air suspension system is standard on both the BMW
X5 xDrive30d and X5 xDrive40i models. It is controlled individually
for each wheel using an electrically driven compressor with pressure
reservoir, enabling it to balance out an unevenly loaded vehicle.
Working in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, the
vehicle load registered by its sensors can be factored into braking
calculations. When the SPORT driving mode is engaged or the vehicle’s
speed exceeds 86mph the ride height is automatically lowered by 20mm.
The driver can also adjust the body’s ground clearance for off-road
driving, for example by pushing a button in the cockpit. It can be
raised in two stages to a maximum of 40mm above the standard setting.
Another button in the luggage compartment activates a loading mode
that lowers the vehicle by 40mm. The desired vehicle ride height can
even be set with the engine switched off and the optional BMW Display
Key can also be used to access this function.

Customers can also specify an Off-Road package. Offered for the
first time in a BMW X model, the package includes underguard elements
at the front and rear of the vehicle, along with the two-axle air
suspension and electronically controlled rear differential lock. The
driver can activate the ideal settings for off-roading including the
vehicle’s ride height, the xDrive system, the accelerator response,
the transmission control, and the DSC system’s corrective inputs in
preparation for driving on a range of surfaces, such as sand, rock,
gravel or snow. Available for all model
variants apart from the BMW X5 M50d.

Interior and equipment.
The fully-digital
instrument cluster and the Control Display share the same graphics and
design, with the centre console hosting the Controller, the newly
designed transmission selector lever and all other driving-related
controls. A similarly new-look control panel for the heating and air
conditioning is also on hand and the light functions in the new X5 are
likewise operated using buttons.

The carefully selected materials in the interior include the new
Vernasca leather variant for the standard leather upholstery. Like the
optional BMW Individual extended Merino leather trim, it is available
in four colours. The new BMW X5 is fitted as standard with
electrically adjustable and heated sports seats. Customers can also
specify optional multifunctional front comfort seats, including
massage function and seat ventilation within the Comfort/Comfort Plus packages.

M Sport models also includes an M sports steering wheel, BMW
Individual headliner in Anthracite, M-specific pedals, driver’s
footrest and piping on the seats, plus exclusive interior trim in
Aluminium Tetragon.

Other new features on board the BMW X5 include optional
four-zone air conditioning system and Skylounge panoramic glass roof,
which includes 15,000 graphic patterns to generate a display
reminiscent of a starlit sky. The colour scheme of this atmospheric
light show can be adapted as desired. The optional ambient lighting
includes the Welcome Light Carpet – which illuminates the entry area
to the car when the doors are unlocked or opened – and Dynamic
Interior Light, which emits pulsating light signals in pre-defined
situations: they are activated in the lining of a door or doors opened
while the engine is running and in the instrument panel when a phone
call is incoming.

The Ambient Air package provides air ionisation and infuses the
interior with eight individually selectable scents, and a luxurious
audio experience is offered by the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond
Surround Sound System with 20 speakers and 1,500-watt output (expected
to be available from 12/2018).

The optional Rear-seat entertainment Professional system
comprises a pair of 10.2-inch full-HD 1080p touchscreen displays, a
Blu-ray-compatible DVD player, two USB ports, an HDMI socket and two
headphone jacks. The rear-seat passengers can use both their own media
sources and those available in the front compartment. A navigation map
and BMW ConnectedDrive services can also be accessed in the rear seats.

The new BMW X5 can now also be specified with heated and
cooledcupholders in the centre console , while the optional
CraftedClarity glass application for selected controls bring an
all-new flourish to the interior of the X5. This exclusive design
feature has been developed for the transmission selector lever, the
Controller, the start/stop button and the volume control button for
the audio system.

As well as increased levels of comfort and exclusivity, the new
BMW X5 now also offers enhanced functionality. Folding down the 40 :
20 : 40 split rear seat backrest increases boot capacity from 650
litres to a maximum of 1,870 litres. The new BMW X5 also has a
two-section tailgate for ease of loading. If the optional Comfort
Access is specified, both sections can be opened and closed
electronically and hands-free. In addition, the boot cover now lowers
electrically into the load compartment floor and anti-slip luggage
rails helps ensure cargo remains stationary whilst the car is in motion.

If the optional third row of seats is specified customers
benefit from electric fore-and-aft adjustment of the second row seats.
A control panel in the boot can be used to slide the second-row seats
forwards or backwards and fold down the backrests of the second and
third rows.

Driver assistance systems: Another significant step towards
automated driving.
Available as an option, the new
Driving Assistant Professional package comprises Active Cruise Control
(ACC) with Stop & Go function, which is capable of braking the
vehicle to a standstill and sending it on its way again automatically.
For greater convenience in stop-start traffic, the period between
stopping and automatically moving off has been extended up to 30
seconds. Speed restrictions identified by the Speed Limit Info system
with No Passing Info display can be incorporated into the automatic
cruise control system with variations of up to 9mph. This pack also
contains the Steering and lane control assistant as well as the Lane
Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection. Another
component of the system is the evasion aid, which can help avoid
collisions with vehicles or pedestrians suddenly appearing in the
driver’s path. As soon as an evasive manoeuvre corresponding to such a
scenario is detected, the system assists the driver with steering
inputs to direct the vehicle into a clear adjacent lane. Other
constituents of this pack includes:

Lane change warning

Crossing Traffic Warning rear

Rear-end collision warning

Speed Limit Information incl. no passing info and preview

The Parking Assistant is another standard feature within in the new
BMW X5. It enables automatic selection and use of parallel parking
spaces. These parking spaces are detected by ultrasonic sensors as the
vehicle passes them. The Parking Assistant function is activated at
the touch of a button on the centre console. The system then takes
care of the acceleration, braking, steering and gear changes necessary
to manoeuvre into the space. Parking assist also includes Reversing
Assistant - a further illustration of BMW’s ongoing progress towards
automated driving.

This function offers a level of assistance – for leaving a
parking space or manoeuvring in a confined area – currently unmatched
by other vehicles. The Reversing Assistant controls the steering to
manoeuvre the vehicle along a path recently negotiated forwards. This
system makes reversing for a distance of up to 50 metres a simple task
in the new BMW X5. The driver just has to operate the accelerator and
brakes and monitor the surrounding area. The steering movements made
during the vehicle’s last forward manoeuvre are stored by the system
and retained, even for longer periods. This means the Reversing
Assistant can be used to manoeuvre the new BMW X5 backwards out of a
parking position that it drove into forwards the preceding day.

The driver enjoys ideal all-round visibility, thanks to both the
rear-view camera and the Top View, Panorama View and 3D View functions
of Parking Assistant Plus, which create a 360-degree image of the
vehicle and its surroundings in the Control Display. In addition,
drivers can use the Remote 3D View feature to access a
three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and surroundings on a smartphone.

BMW Connected and ConnectedDrive: Cutting-edge, digital and
seamlessly integrated into modern life.
The BMW Live
Cockpit Professional in the new BMW X5 combines a new display and
control concept and the ultimate in connectivity to create a superb
all-round package. The latest-generation display and control concept
comprises a high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering
wheel with a 12.3-inch screen and a Control Display also measuring
12.3-inches across.

The system runs the latest BMW Operating System 7.0, and has a
cutting-edge, fully digital design. The new graphics display in the
instrument cluster now leaves enough room for a part-view of the
navigation map. The main menu in the Control Display is now spread
over up to ten pages, each showing two to four tiles with live
content. The intuitive multimodal interface has also been further
improved and allows the choice of touch control using the Control
Display, the familiar iDrive Touch Controller, controls on the
steering wheel, voice control or BMW gesture control. Also included in
BMW Live Cockpit Professional are an adaptive navigation system, a
hard-drive-based multimedia system with music file memory of up to
50GB and two USB ports, plus Bluetooth and WiFi interfaces.

For the first time, a selection of digital services will also be
combined together available under the guise of the Connected Package
Professional. This package offered as standard on all BMW X5 models
increases the levels of connectivity and makes it easier for customers
to take best advantage of digital services available on their car. The
Connected Package Professional includes Remote Services, Concierge
Services and Real Time Traffic Information and so much more. The
package provides a subscription for three years on all included
services – with the exception of Apple CarPlay which is included for
the first 12 months. Customers can also continue to download the
various digital services individually and retrospectively via the
ConnectedDrive Store.

BMW Connected: digital services for individual
mobility.
BMW Connected is the digital and personal
mobility assistant for BMW drivers and not just in the car; BMW
Connected is an all-embracing concept designed to seamlessly connect
the driver and their smartphone with their vehicle.

At the heart of it all is the Open Mobility Cloud, which allows
the personal mobility assistant to interface the car with the
customer’s digital devices. These could include an iPhone and Apple
Watch, smartphones and smartwatches running the Android operating
system, Alexa-compatible smart devices and Google Home.

Always up to date thanks to Remote Software
Upgrade.
The Remote Software Upgrade feature keeps the
vehicle up to date with the latest software. All updates can be loaded
over the air and upgrades can be loaded onto a smartphone via the BMW
Connected app when connected to a domestic WiFi network or imported
directly via the BMW’s built-in SIM card, which happens automatically
for important vehicle upgrades. The Remote Software Upgrade facility
therefore maximises flexibility while keeping BMW vehicles in tune
with the latest technological developments.

Mobile office: Microsoft Office 365 with Skype for
Business.
The integration of Microsoft Office 365 turns
the new BMW X5 into a mobile office. Users of a Business Essential or
Business Premium account with Exchange function are thereby able to
safely access their email account from their car and easily manage
appointments and contacts, so there is absolutely no need for them to
use their smartphone while driving. Drivers can have emails read out
to them and are able to use voice commands to dictate and send new
messages while on the move. In addition, calendar appointments can be
confirmed, cancelled or transferred straight to the navigation system,
as can contact addresses. Microsoft Office 365 users have also been

Munich. The BMW i3 sets standards worldwide for
driving pleasure in a purely electrically-driven vehicle. Key factors
here are not only the increased output of the motor in the new BMW
i3s, but also the innovative traction control system adapted
specifically to the instantaneous power deliver of the BMW eDrive
system. Presented for the first time in the new BMW i3s (270 Nm at 0
rpm, 135 kW / 184 HP, power consumption combined in European NEFZ
test-cycle*: 14.3 kWh/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 0 g/km), the
system improves traction and driving stability in adverse weather and
road conditions when pulling away, in active Brake Energy Regeneration
phases and when accelerating out of tight corners. At the heart of
this innovation is the control system’s 50-times-faster routine, made
possible because – unlike conventional driving stability systems – the
control process is now calculated directly in the powertrain instead
of in a remote unit requiring long signal paths. This development
provides further evidence of BMW i as a pioneer of innovative
technology within the BMW Group.

“With their high levels of torque and instantaneous responses to
every movement of the accelerator, electric motors already make
significantly higher demands on driving stability systems than
conventional power units,” explains Peter Langen, Head of Chassis
Development at BMW.

That’s why the BMW engineers developed a new type of system
geared squarely to the demands of electric mobility.
The
positive impact of these shorter control cycles is not reserved for
purely electrically driven cars; indeed, this innovative traction
control system also optimises traction, driving stability and driving
dynamics in vehicles with combustion engines. It will therefore be
fitted in BMW and MINI models with front-, rear- and all-wheel drive
to deliver noticeably greater assurance and driving pleasure when road
conditions make pulling away difficult.
