The new BMW X5 adds another chapter to its story of success. The fifth generation of the BMW X5 impresses with technical innovations, a stunning new design and the integration of future-oriented technologies from the Neue Klasse. This underlines its exceptional status and reinforces its leading position in a segment that it originally established.

First all-electric BMW X5.

As the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) from the brand and founding father of the eminently successful BMW X family, the trendsetting BMW X5 has been shaping the future in innovative style since its introduction in 1999. Embodying that very same aspiration, the new BMW X5 will come to market with a selection of drive system types.

In addition to variants with petrol or diesel combustion engines, including 48V mild hybrid technology, and plug-in hybrid models, the fifth generation of the successful model also encompasses the first all-electric BMW iX5. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is also set to celebrate its market launch – at a later stage in selected markets, not including South Africa – as the first hydrogen-powered BMW production vehicle.

On offer in South Africa, the new BMW iX5 is launching with the sixth generation of BMW’s eDrive technology. This means longer ranges of up to 845 kilometres in the BMW iX5 60 xDrive, fast charging, 800V technology and practical bidirectional charging. This is thanks to new cylindrical cells with a height of 120 millimetres, installed in the high-voltage battery and in use for the first time in the new BMW iX5.

The following models will be available in South Africa from market introduction: BMW X5 xDrive40d xDrive, BMW X5 50e xDrive PHEV, and the fully-electric BMW iX5 60 xDrive.

New design: unmistakeable presence from every perspective.

The new BMW X5 also takes a major leap forward in terms of design. Viewed from any perspective, the clear, monolithic and powerful appearance of the car embodies the confident presence that underlines its leading position in the segment, becoming one of the key faces of the brand. This is attributed to the effortless melding of classic SAV proportions with the forward-looking BMW design language of the Neue Klasse to produce a harmonious, distinct end result.

The next generation of the distinctive X exterior is characterised by the upright design of the front end, the vertically aligned BMW kidney Iconic Glow and the new “double-X” light icons, making their first appearance in a BMW. The clearly structured side view of the BMW X5 is particularly impressive, mainly due to the innovative door handles, the BMW Winglets. These combine progressive design with functional convenience: recessed handles require the lightest of touches to open the electrically powered doors (integrating Soft-Close as standard equipment). Automatic Doors will be also available on the new BMW X5, integrated in the local Pioneer Package.

Naturally, all models offer broad scope for tailoring the design, including eleven exterior paint colours and a precisely curated wheel range that now boasts 23-inch rims, while the M Sport package and the M Sport package Pro provide a range of distinctive features.

High-quality M Performance Parts available.

In addition, high-quality M Performance Parts are available for the BMW X5. Highlights of the range include striking exterior items such as the M Performance front splitter in carbon fibre, M Performance roof spoiler black high-gloss, and M Performance rear diffuser and M Performance exterior mirror caps featuring aramid. Also available are M Performance wheels in 21- and 23-inch formats. The cabin can likewise be given an even sportier look with items such as M Performance floor mats.

Spacious, natural and innovative: redesigned interior combines feel good atmosphere with digital user experience.

One glance at the redesigned interior immediately reveals the extremely high quality of the new BMW X5. The interior impresses with clear structures and uncluttered surfaces, producing a harmonious sense of space and calmly providing subtle support for classic BMW driver orientation. In South Africa, BMW Individual Merino Leather upholstery will be offered in the Deluxe Package, together with Alcantara headliner and door and dashboard trim, to ensure an additionally luxurious feeling in the cabin.

The outstanding visual and haptic quality of the interior is also underlined by the new decorative surfaces constructed from materials such as slate and glass that generate an atmosphere of elemental sophistication. BMW is the first carmaker worldwide to offer slate as a decorative surface, available as standard equipment in South Africa.

The BMW X5 incorporates core technologies from the Neue Klasse in the form of the new BMW Panoramic iDrive display and operating system, underpinned by BMW Operating System X. These include the Central Display in free-cut design, the BMW 3D Head-Up Display, the BMW Panoramic Vision with a projection surface extending across the full width of the windscreen, and the new multifunction steering wheel that are all listed as standard equipment for South African vehicles. The BMW Passenger Screen is available as an optional extra in the BMW X5 for the first time. This results in an all-encompassing digital user experience centred around both the driver and their passengers.

The BMW X5 combines fascinating new technologies with a genuinely feel-good interior atmosphere. This is expressed in the lighting animations provided by the ambient light strip, a central element that creates an inviting wrap-around effect from door to door to generate a harmonious atmosphere.

BMW X5 combines a high level of comfort with BMW typical driving dynamics and intelligent driver assistance systems.

As the sportiest SUV in its segment, the BMW X5 has long set standards in terms of driving dynamics – and the latest generation of the BMW X5 is equally impressive in its this respect. This is due in no small part to the adaptive suspension fitted as standard and axle load distribution close to 50:50. Extras included in the Pioneer Package include Adaptive Chassis Control, as well as the Adaptive Chassis Control Professional with roll stabilisation initially available for every all‑electric and plug‑in hybrid model. This system leads the way when it comes to blending BMW’s characteristic driving dynamics with maximum ride comfort.

BMW Symbiotic Drive provides intelligent support tailored to individual driving behaviour. The advanced Level 2 driver assistance systems and active safety functions are designed down to the smallest detail for seamless interaction between assistance and human driving, also delivered as standard equipment in South Africa. In the BMW iX5 models, and in the upcoming BMW iX5 Hydrogen, the Heart of Joy also enables a very special experience: BMW Soft-Stop, which executes the smoothest stopping action yet provided by BMW.

Production and premiere in Spartanburg.

In South Africa, the market launch of the new BMW X5 is scheduled from early 2027. Production of the new models will ramp up some months ahead of this, with BMW Group Plant Spartanburg (USA) initiating series production of the fifth-generation BMW X5 in August 2026.

Munich/Spartanburg (USA). The new BMW X5 has entered the finishing straight in its development programme. The fifth generation of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) is now completing final calibration drives around its production base at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the USA. The new BMW X5 will be the first BMW production model to be introduced onto the market with a choice of five different drive system technologies. The first fully electric BMW iX5 will be making its debut, and this will be followed in 2028 by the arrival of the first ever hydrogen-powered BMW to go into series production – the BMW iX5 Hydrogen. Also available will be petrol and diesel variants with 48V mild hybrid technology, and plug‑in hybrid models.

The fully electric BMW iX5: world premiere with new Gen6 eDrive technology.

The first battery-electric BMW iX5 is based on the sixth generation of BMW eDrive technology, which features a new high-voltage battery concept with cylindrical cells and 800V technology. With its usable energy content of 144 kWh in the USA and 141 kWh in the EU (net), the BMW iX5 60 xDrive boasts the largest high-voltage battery to be fitted in an all-electric BMW model to date. Propulsive power is provided by one electric motor at the front axle and another at the rear, working in tandem with BMW xDrive electric all-wheel drive.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen: hydrogen-powered production model from BMW due in 2028 with innovative Flat Storage system.
The first ever hydrogen-powered BMW production model, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, will hit the roads in 2028. Its powertrain comprises a fuel cell system, the new BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage system and an innovative high-voltage battery. The third generation of the fuel cell system forms the basis for a particularly compact design as well as high power and efficiency. The flat tank system consists of seven high-pressure tanks made of a carbon-fibre reinforced composite, which are connected with one another in parallel. These are integrated into a robust metal frame. This layout makes exceptionally efficient use of the space the system takes up in the vehicle; no room is lost inside the cabin. Another benefit is that models with fuel cell technology can be built on the same production line as other drive system types.

Pure driving pleasure thanks to the Heart of Joy.
The new BMW X5 will offer a new-dimension driving experience courtesy of technology from the Neue Klasse – the Heart of Joy featuring the BMW Dynamic Performance Control driving stack developed fully in-house. This high-performance control unit acts ten times faster than previous systems, meaning it is able to make adjustments to the powertrain, brakes, steering sub-functions, charging and recuperation in a matter of milliseconds. The result is remarkable agility, poise and precision. In the BMW iX5 and BMW iX5 Hydrogen, this technology also impresses with extremely smooth stopping manoeuvres while also increasing efficiency by recovering more energy under deceleration with regenerative braking. In combustion-engined or plug-in hybrid models, the latest digital and highly interconnected driving dynamics systems ensure the car always makes optimum use of the available traction and delivers composed handling at all times. These systems include the standard-fitted tenth-generation transverse dynamics management system and near-actuator wheel slip limitation, both supported by precisely tuned chassis components.

The wheels – larger rims with diameters of up to 23 inches can now be specified – and the standard mixed-size tyres further enhance comfort, stability and dynamism. The new BMW X5 comes as standard with adaptive suspension whose dampers are controlled electronically for each individual wheel, plus almost 50:50 weight distribution. The dampers can be continuously adjusted, enabling everything from a very comfortable ride through to sporty, dynamic handling. Adaptive Chassis Control Professional, which is available as an option for the all‑electric BMW iX5 and the plug-in hybrid models, maximises dynamic prowess. It includes two-axle air suspension with electronically controlled dampers, Integral Active Steering and active roll stabilisation.

Next-generation driver assistance systems.
The new BMW X5 features innovative SAE Level 2 driver assistance systems and active safety functions from the Neue Klasse technology clusters. Customers can therefore look forward to significant upgrades and extended functionality, as well as BMW Symbiotic Drive. One example of these innovations is the optional Motorway and City Assistant, which includes Entry-2-Exit assistance on motorways and Address‑2‑Address assistance in urban areas. The advanced Level 2 driver assistance systems from BMW are meticulously designed for seamless interaction between assistance tech and human driving habits. The aim here is not to attain the highest possible level of automation in every situation, but to provide a safe driver assistance experience that offers maximum benefit and remains controllable at all times. As a result, the driver always stays involved as human and artificial intelligence interact. With driver assistance systems active, this means the driver can accelerate, steer and brake as required, without instantly deactivating the assistance system in the process. The straightforward operating logic and clear displays of BMW Panoramic iDrive ensure that assisted driving is intuitive and controllable at all times, enabling safe use of the highest SAE Level 2 automation.

The symbiotic interaction between driver and vehicle can also be experienced with active safety functions that work unobtrusively in the background as silent companions. A good example is the Lane Keeping Assistant, which detects the driver’s intention based on steering behaviour and where they are looking. The system only assists with warnings and steering inputs when the driver really is drifting out of their lane unintentionally or an impending collision is detected. Other safety functions include automated evasive manoeuvring within the car’s own lane, Lane Change Warning, Side Collision Warning with steering intervention when there is a risk of a lateral collision, plus Crossing Traffic Warning and automatic braking when turning into a road or exiting a parking space.

BMW presents the extensively updated new editions of its successful Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) for the  luxury segment. The new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 emphasise their inherent poise and assurance with detailed design revisions and  additions to their standard specification. The refreshed drive system line up includes new combustion engines, a latest-generation plug-in hybrid  system for the BMW X5 xDrive50e, and 48V mild hybrid technology for all other models. Also leading the way are the new systems for automated driving and parking, and the fully digital iDrive control/operation system with BMW Curved  Display based on BMW Operating System 8.

The update will provide the BMW X5 with everything it needs to maintain worldwide market leadership in its segment and enable the BMW X6 to secure its position as number one ahead of competitors from other premium German manufacturers. The two models will be built at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the USA, the competence centre for BMW X models, and their global launch gets underway from April 2023. The new BMW X5 and the new BMW X6 will be available in South Africa from the third quarter of 2023. 

The new BMW X5: slim headlights, illuminated BMW kidney grille.

The inclusion of the xLine design elements as standard gives the BMW X5 significantly greater presence and visual robustness. Its front end is shaped by the fresh interpretation of the hallmark BMW headlights and kidney grille. The new headlight units now have a 35-millimetre slimmer outline. Their arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements point outwards and also serve as turn signal indicators. Matrix LED headlights with adaptive control and BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling high beam, plus M Shadowline lights, are included on the options list.

The BMW kidney Iconic Glow is now offered as an option for the six-cylinder variants of the new BMW X5, and its cascade lighting creates an extremely eye-catching and brand-typical look. The vertical air curtains and the lower air intake, complete with decorative trim detail in Pearl-effect Chrome and triangular apertures in its outer areas, also contribute to the cutting-edge aura.

The precisely updated design of the BMW X5 also spans newly designed air breathers in the front side panels and the standard inclusion of Exterior Line Satin Aluminium trim and roof rails in Satin Aluminium. The sculptural fibre-optic light guide elements for the rear lights and brake lights now have particularly striking contouring. The L shape familiar from other BMW models is reflected horizontally, creating a consistently illuminated X motif within the rear lights.

The new BMW X6: M Sport package now standard.

The new BMW X6 also has slim headlight units with arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements. As before, the BMW kidney Iconic Glow is offered as an option for the six-cylinder models. The dynamic character of the new BMW X6 is highlighted even more intently with the now standard M Sport package. Playing a key role here is the octagonal front-end signature below the BMW kidney grille, with its striking side apertures and generous use of black surfaces. In addition, the three-dimensional sculpting of the front apron underscores the car’s width and brawny stature.

M-specific side skirts and M High-gloss Shadowline trim are also part of the M Sport package. The rear apron of the SAC has an insert in Dark Shadow, while the new exhaust tailpipe trims are trapezoidal in shape.

Range-topping models with distinctive design features; M Sport package Pro makes its debut.

The M Sport package is available as an option for the new BMW X5 to convey the feeling of exclusive dynamism, as it does as standard in the design of the new BMW X6. These design features take on a model-specific form for the range-topping BMW X5 M60i xDrive. They include double bars and an M logo for the BMW kidney grille, M exterior mirror caps in Black high-gloss, exhaust system tailpipe trim in the hallmark M quad-pipe style and a rear spoiler in Black high-gloss for the BMW X6 M60i xDrive.

All model variants are now available with the M Sport package Pro. The new M Marina Bay Blue metallic (BMW X5 M60i xDrive) and M Isle of Man Green metallic (BMW X6 M60i xDrive) body paint finishes are available exclusively for the range-topping models. New additions for all models are Blue Ridge Mountain metallic, Brooklyn Grey metallic, Skyscraper Grey metallic, Frozen Pure Grey metallic and around 40 BMW Individual special paint finishes.

Modern cockpit design with all-digital BMW Curved Display.

Digital technology is the guiding force behind the advances brought to the interior of the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. The integration of BMW Operating System 8 and the latest generation of the iDrive control/operation system also heralds the arrival of the BMW Curved Display in the Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupé. It is made up of a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches – both located behind a single glass surface. The touch control functionality of the control display has brought about a significant reduction in the number of buttons and switches in favour of digital control for numerous functions. The innovative cockpit and associated updates to the instrument panel bring a particularly progressive feel to the modern premium ambience.

Standard specification for both models now includes an instrument panel with surfacing in leather-like Sensafin and an elegantly curving trim element in fine wood. Another new feature is the ambient light bar with highly effective LED backlighting integrated below the trim element in the front passenger area. The relevant model lettering – “X5” or “X6” – is added to the light bar’s graphic; in the two flagship models it displays the M logo. The control panel on the centre console includes additional touch-sensitive surfaces and a newly designed gear selector lever.

Comfort seats for the driver and front passenger can be specified as an alternative to the standard sport seats with Sensafin surfaces. Also available as an option are BMW Individual Merino extended leather upholstery, BMW Individual full Merino leather upholstery, active seat ventilation and a massage function.

Among the other highlights of the options list are the new Comfort Package with panel heating and a “thermo” function for the cup holders, the Sky Lounge panoramic glass sunroof illuminated by LED units, glass applications for selected controls, the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System and the newly designed Travel & Comfort System.

New engines, new eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and systematic electrification.*

The new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 can both be ordered with the choice of an eight-cylinder petrol engine, a six-cylinder in-line petrol and a six-cylinder in-line diesel engine – each from the latest generation of power units. All of the engines now link up with the likewise new eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, complete with gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. They send their power to the road – or indeed unpaved surfaces, as the need arises – via the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

All the drive units now feature 48V mild hybrid technology. This across-the-board application of electrification comes in the form of an electric motor integrated into the transmission. This motor generates an output boost of up to 9 kW and 200 Nm of torque, helping the combustion engine to deliver a smooth, dynamic drive along with high efficiency.

New plug-in hybrid BMW X5 xDrive50e offers more power, efficiency and electric range.

The drive system for the plug-in hybrid variant of the SAV has also been completely reworked, and the updated model carries the designation BMW X5 xDrive50e. A latest-generation six-cylinder in-line petrol engine and a similarly new electric motor team up to develop system output of 360 kW (including temporary boost effect) – an increase of 70 kW over the outgoing model – and combined torque of 700 Nm, which is a rise of 100 Nm. The petrol engine’s nominal output of 230 kW represents an increase of 20 kW on the unit it replaces. The compact electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission produces a nominal output of 145 kW (+62 kW). In addition, an innovative pre-gearing stage – used to increase the effective torque produced by the electric motor to a maximum 450 Nm at the transmission input for the motor – helps to provide even sharper power delivery. The BMW X5 xDrive50e accelerates from rest to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.

The amount of usable energy that can be stored by the high-voltage battery integrated into the underbody area has been increased by almost 25 per cent over the preceding generation, to 25.7 kWh. A new Combined Charging Unit doubles the maximum AC charging rate to 7.4 kW. The electric range of the new BMW X5 xDrive50e is 94 – 110 kilometres in the WLTP cycle.

New V8 petrol engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology.

Credit for the elite sporting prowess of the two range-topping models goes to a new 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine, derived from the power units in high-performance models from BMW M GmbH. M TwinPower Turbo technology and a cross-bank exhaust manifold imbue the 390 kW engine, which generates peak torque of 750 Nm, with impressively accomplished performance characteristics.

The latest version of the eight-cylinder engine powers both the new BMW X5 M60i xDrive and new BMW X6 M60i xDrive from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds.

Latest-generation six-cylinder in-line petrol engine.

Innovations affecting the combustion process, gas exchange, valve control, injection and ignition system mark out the latest-generation 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line petrol engine at work in the new BMW X5 xDrive40i.

The new engine develops maximum output increased by 35 kW over the outgoing models to 280 kW, plus peak torque up by 70 Nm to 520 Nm. This can be boosted to as much as 540 Nm with the input of the mild hybrid system. The engine accelerates both the new BMW X5 xDrive40i and new BMW X6 xDrive40i from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds.

Six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with detail improvements.

The six-cylinder in-line diesel engine in the new BMW X5 xDrive30d also brings upgrades to numerous details. The 3.0-litre unit now has steel pistons instead of aluminium items, an optimised oil separation process and a new common-rail direct injection system with solenoid valve injectors.

The new diesel engine joins forces with the mild hybrid system to produce maximum output of 219 kW and peak torque of 670 Nm. This enables both the new BMW X5 xDrive30d and new BMW X6 xDrive30d to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds.

Sophisticated chassis technology underpins sporting ability and long-distance comfort.

Fitting adaptive suspension as standard, modifying the anti-roll bars in response to changes in weight distribution and strengthening them accordingly gives the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 their signature blend of sporting versatility and excellent long-distance comfort. Adaptive M suspension, which comes as standard on both the range-topping models as well as the other variants of the new BMW X6, provides a particularly firm connection to the body. Adaptive two-axle air suspension and the xOffroad package are offered as options. The range-topping models are equipped as standard with Integral Active Steering. This is available as an option for all other models or as part of the adaptive M suspension Professional, which also includes an M Sport differential and an active roll stabilisation system.

The integrated braking system is another element of the advanced chassis technology at work here. And standard specification also includes 20-inch light-alloy wheels for the new BMW X5, 20-inch items for the new BMW X6 and 21-inch wheels for the range-topping variant of each model. Light-alloy wheels up to 22 inches in size can be specified as an option.

Additional systems for automated driving and parking.

Comfort and safety in the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 can be taken to another new level with a significantly expanded selection of automated driving and parking systems. Updates include enhanced capabilities for the standard front-collision warning system, which can now also reduce the risk of a collision with cyclists, pedestrians or oncoming traffic when turning off a road. Among the options now available are automatic Speed Limit Assist, exit warning, route speed control, Emergency Stop Assistant, and Lane Change Assistant.

As well as the Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing Assistant, the standard Parking Assistant now also comprises the drive-off monitoring and Trailer Assistant functions. And the new, optional Parking Assistant Professional enables automated parking into and out of spaces and complete manoeuvres over a distance of up to 200 metres to be controlled from outside the car using the My BMW App on an Apple iPhone.

Latest-generation BMW iDrive, new digital services.

The latest-generation BMW iDrive tech based on BMW Operating System 8 brings both the BMW Curved Display and an array of new digital services to the BMW X5 and BMW X6. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus also includes the cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps. And the optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional also treats customers to the BMW head-up display and Augmented View function. When the car is stationary, the driver and front passenger can also stream content from YouTube on the control display.

The optional BMW Digital Key Plus enables customers to lock and unlock their new BMW X5 or BMW X6 via security-enhanced ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology with compatible smartphones running the iOS or Android operating system. Optimised smartphone integration, the personalised BMW ID and a Personal eSIM designed to work with new 5G mobile technology are also on hand. The digital services from BMW Charging for the BMW X5 xDrive50e have now been integrated into the My BMW App.

Midrand, South Africa – M for Motorsport: BMW South Africa is celebrating the local premiere of its two latest M models. The new Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) BMW X5 M Competition and the Sports Activity Coupe (SAC), the new BMW X6 M Competition. The two flagships are the third generation of the high-performance BMW M models in the luxury SAV and SAC segments.

The overall concept reprises the classical M blueprint for dynamics, agility and precision, combining the versatility, extrovert design and modern luxury BMW X models have become renowned for.

Significant power hike

 Both powerhouses possess a high-revving 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, resulting in a  power increase over their respective predecessors of 37 kW for both the BMW X5 M Competition and the BMW X6 M Competition. This sees both the BMW X5 M Competition and the BMW X6 M Competition boasting 460 kW of power  (at 6 000 rpm) and a maximum torque of 750 Nm between 1800 – 5600 rpm.

Unmatched power delivery

Versatile power delivery is effortless, thanks in part to an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and the M xDrive all‑wheel-drive system with rear-biased setup, which can be adjusted in 4WD / 4WD Sport modes. The M xDrive teams up with Active M Differential to optimise traction and dynamics.

With an ultra-high rigidity engine mounting, cooling and oil supply systems tuned to top-level dynamic performance, the Sports exhaust system delivers an emotionally stirring soundtrack.

Both the BMW X5 M Competition and the BMW X6 M Competition accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds - up to 0.4 seconds faster than their predecessors.

A unique overall concept raises performance above that of any rival. Seamless interplay of the powertrain, chassis and body serve up sublimely controllable agility and dynamism.

When it comes to the BMW X5 M Competition and the BMW X6 M Competition, an extrovert body design represents visual expression.

Familiar SAV and SAC proportions combine with signature M features, optimising cooling air supply and aerodynamics.

BMW M in South Africa

Munich. With the latest generation of the security vehicle built on the basis of a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) for the luxury class segment, the premium carmaker BMW now meets the increased need for individual protection and superiority in any situation. The new BMW X5 Protection VR6 (combined fuel consumption: 13.0 l/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 298 g/km*) offers private individuals and persons at risk customised protection against violent attacks, kidnapping or organised crime. This is often a decisive criterion, especially in regions like South America, Africa or Russia.

The integration of series components and additional safety-related equipment of the BMW X5 Protection VR6 into the vehicle architecture was already taken account of during development. Production is carried out according to the stringent production standards defined by the BMW Group. Thus the BMW X5 Protection VR6 combines a standard range of integrated protective equipment with the driving dynamics, comfort and advanced technology of the BMW X5. This is complemented by the equally supreme and discreet appearance of the new security vehicle, which is almost identical to the production model in terms of driving characteristics, high-grade interior and design.

The new BMW X5 Protection VR6 fulfils the requirements of resistance class VR6 in accordance with the internationally recognised official test criteria of the VPAM (Prüfstellen für Angriffshemmende Materialien und Konstruktionen; Associations of Testing Institutes for Attack Resistant Materials and Constructions). The official certification was carried out according to the Guidelines for Bullet Resistant Vehicles (BRV 2009), Explosive Resistant Vehicles (ERV 2010) and PAS 300, which define the bullet and explosive force resistance of security vehicles.

Maximum protection thanks to a holistic safety concept.

The integration of the protective equipment rendering the new BMW X5 a security vehicle of the resistance class VR6 was already taken into account during the development of the SAV. In this way, it was possible to implement a holistic safety concept comprising all areas of passive and active passenger protection. The moulded armour-plating components and the security glazing were developed exclusively for each model. They blend in harmoniously with the overall vehicle concept in terms of function and design. Therefore, both outside and inside, the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 is barely distinguishable from a conventional production vehicle. The anonymity resulting from this constitutes an additional safety aspect.

In contrast to retro-fitted armouring, there are also decisive advantages with respect to the effectiveness of the protective equipment and handling characteristics. The holistic safety concept of the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 makes it possible to already identify during the development stage potential weaknesses such as body joints and transitions between metal and glazing and to integrate effective protective measures. Certification includes the complete vehicle and not just the materials used. This is the only way to make a realistic assessment of the effectiveness of the model-specific protective cell. Likewise, the suspension and brakes on the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 are aligned to the increased weight vs. the production vehicle in order to ensure hallmark BMW agility also in critical driving situations.

Protected space: armoured passenger compartment and security glazing. 

The interior of the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 offers passengers an extremely high level of protection against attacks with firearms and/or explosive devices. The key element of the protective equipment is the armoured passenger compartment of the SAV. Moulded components made from high-strength steel adapt perfectly to the contour of the body within the area of the doors, side frame, roof and front wall. Furthermore, an aluminium underbody splinter shield, the likewise armoured luggage compartment partition and security glazing are all standard and contribute towards a comprehensive protection of the interior. Multilayered safety glass with a thickness of approx. 33 mm for the windscreen, doors and luggage compartment partition wall also withstands attacks by impact weapons and is fitted with an internal polycarbonate layer as additional splinter protection.  Moreover, penetration by bullets or fragments is prevented by tightly sealed protection and overlapping amour-plating, e.g. within the sensitive areas of door gaps and bodywork joints as well as the transitions between body panels and glazing.

The combination of amour-plated bodywork and security glazing facilitates effective protection against attacks by handguns and long firearms using ammunition up to a calibre of 7.62 × 39 FeC or 7.62 × 39 SC respectively, as used in weapons of the type AK-47, a most commonly used weapon in the world. Furthermore, the armoured passenger compartment withstands lateral blasts of up to 15 kilograms of TNT from a distance of four metres. Innovative so-called Post Blast Protective Technology for the security glazing ensures particularly effective protection against secondary attacks. Even following a blast, all windows remain firmly in position, thus eliminating any formation of gaps between glazing and body.

The armour-plated floor offers protection against hand grenades of the type DM51. Enhanced underbody reinforcement comprising fibre composite materials, which also withstands attack by hand grenades of the type HG85, is optionally available. A particularly extensively armoured roof is available as a further special option. The additional reinforcement comprising security steel and fibre composite materials offers certified protection against drone attacks with explosive charges of the category DTG5, which, inter alia, includes up to 200 grams of C4 and over 500 fragments.

A further model-specific, integral component of the standard equipment for the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 is the self-sealing fuel tank. A special sheathing ensures that the tank closes automatically following an attack in order to prevent fuel spillage. Standard runflat tyres with reinforced sidewalls allow the driver to continue the journey even after a complete loss of tyre pressure. Optional model-specific post crash functions also serve to retain mobility in extreme situations. They ensure that the engine of the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 is not switched off after a collision and that the energy supply is not interrupted.

Superior engines, model-specific suspension.

Not only in terms of design is the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 almost indistinguishable from the corresponding production model. A high degree of agility on the road and impressive off-road performance provides perfect conditions for safely mastering any situation. The necessary power comes from an extremely efficient V8 petrol engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The technology package comprises two turbo chargers located within the V space between the cylinder banks, one operating at an increased maximum pressure of 350 bar and the latest versions of the fully variable valve control system VALVETRONIC as well as variable twin VANOS camshaft control.

Spontaneous response and superior power development characterise the new eight-cylinder in the engine portfolio for the BMW X5. From a 4.4-litre displacement it mobilises a maximum power output of 390 kW within a speed range of between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm. The power unit delivers a maximum torque of 750 Nm at 1,800 rpm, which remains available up to 4,600 rpm. Therefore, the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 is by far the most powerful vehicle within the competitive environment. The supreme pulling power of its V8 engine facilitates acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds. Top speed of the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 is electronically limited to 210 km/h.

Design and tuning of the suspension for the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 are both oriented towards the outstanding engine performance and the model-specific weight of the security vehicle. The components and systems, which have been precisely aligned and combined into a harmonious overall package, guarantee maximum agility as well as an outstanding level of comfort. The construction of the suspension comprises a double wishbone front axle and a five-arm rear axle as well as a specifically reinforced steel spring system and electronically controlled dampers with independent characteristic diagrams. 20-inch light alloy wheels with mixed tyres permit enhanced lateral acceleration and maximum track stability during dynamic cornering. The sports brake system also guarantees constantly high braking performance even under extreme conditions.

Active Roll Stabilisation contributes additionally to the supreme handling characteristics of the new BMW X5 Protection VR6. The vehicle’s electric swivel motors ensure fast and precise compensation of body roll during dynamic cornering. Furthermore, they actively counter the vibrations triggered by unevenness on one side of the road. As a result, the vehicle’s self-steering and load change behaviour are both noticeably optimised. Therefore, Active Roll Stabilisation enhances the comfort, agility and stability of the new BMW X5 Protection VR6.

Moreover, the standard equipment of the security vehicle also includes Integral Active Steering. The front and rear wheels steer in opposing directions or turn in the same direction depending on the current speed. Thus, agility during cornering and stability during lane change are enhanced, as are the manoeuvrability of the vehicle in city traffic and parking.  

Comprehensive comfort and safety features, individual options.

Thanks to its integrated safety concept, the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 is equipped to cope with every-day traffic conditions as well as those situations requiring special protection and flexible reactions. At the same time, it offers the degree of sportiness, versatility and comfort that is characteristic of the BMW X5. There are four seats available in the generously sized interior. Due to the holistic development concept, convenient entry and exit as well as all-round visibility offered by the production vehicle are fully retained.

The windscreen and front section of the side windows come as standard with heating function. The security glazing features electric windows on the driver’s side. Optionally, electric windows can also be installed at the passenger’s side. In addition, the opening height of the windows at the front can be limited to around ten centimetres to enable communication with the outside world and the exchange of documents while preventing larger objects from entering the vehicle.

Standard model-specific features of the BMW X5 Protection VR6 include an intercom and an attack alarm system. The intercom facilitates communication with persons outside the vehicle without the need to open doors or windows. For this purpose, exterior mirror-integrated microphones, an external loudspeaker and a hands-free microphone, which is installed in the roof liner, as well as additional internal loudspeakers, are used. The attack alarm function ensures at the push of a button that the doors are automatically locked and the windows on the driver’s and passenger’s side are closed. Furthermore, audible and visual alarms are activated. Control elements for the system as well as further model-specific functions are installed in an additional switch panel in front of the gear selector lever.

Standard equipment features include, inter alia, 4-zone automatic climate control, a hi-fi loudspeaker system, Ambient Light, Automatic Soft Close for the doors and the M leather steering wheel. Additional standard features are the BMW Live Cockpit Professional, the multi-display set-up of which comprises a fully digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch control display enabling the driver of the BMW X5 Protection VR6 to use the diverse online-based services from BMW Connected and BMW ConnectedDrive. This also includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, a system that facilitates the operation of numerous functions by means of natural voice commands.

The range of optional equipment also includes, inter alia, comfort seats, Active Seat Ventilation and a massage function, Rear Seat Entertainment Professional and glass applications for selected control elements. Furthermore, all exterior colours, seat upholsteries and interior trim strips available for the SAV can be chosen for individualising the BMW X5 Protection VR6. Additional ease of manoeuvrability is provided by a reversing camera and Surround View, including the Remote 3D View function, which transmits a live image of the vehicle and its surroundings to the customer’s smartphone. BMW Laser Light with Selective Beam, which increases the high beam range to more than 500 metres, is also available for the security vehicle as an alternative to the standard LED headlights.

Moreover, additional optional features designed to suit each model are available for each desired purpose. Therefore, the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 can be additionally equipped, for example, with LED front flashers in the radiator grille, rear flashers, roof-mounted light beacons including signal tone system, a roof antenna with additional receiver for digital radio as well as armour-plating for the vehicle batteries. A pennant holder is also available for representation purposes.

The new BMW X5 Protection VR6: a genuine BMW for customised protection.

Like all of the Bavarian brand’s security vehicles, the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 was subjected to a comprehensive testing regime. This includes test and calibration drives within the framework of the serial development process, which guarantee reliable performance and function also under extreme conditions.

The security vehicle is already fitted with its unique suspension technology at the BMW Spartanburg plant in the US federal state of South Carolina, where the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 is produced alongside the production model variants of the SAV. The subsequent integration of protective equipment and further model-specific safety features by highly qualified experts at the manufacturer’s special plant in Toluca, Mexico, offers uncompromising implementation of the holistic safety concept. As opposed to retro-fitted armoured vehicles, which may compromise security or have components subjected to excessive loads, production is carried out according to stringent BMW quality standards.

Ballistic testing is carried out by an independent state testing authority to verify the resistance effect of the armouring and security glazing in accordance with internationally recognised guidelines. However, the ballistic tests exceed by far the usual requirements. In addition to the required 90 and 45-degree ballistic tests, the test scenario is supplemented by gunfire from additional angles in order to best reflect realistic conditions. The official testing and certification of the entire vehicle provides evidence of the reliability of the safety concept as a whole.

Unique experience: the first BMW security vehicle was built more than 40 years ago.

All over the world, private individuals, officials and celebrities alike rely on security vehicles from BMW. The high reputation is built not least on a unique tradition. The BMW Group has more than 40 years of experience in the development and production of security vehicles with model-specific protective equipment. As early as in 1978, BMW presented the first security vehicle based on a BMW 7 Series sedan. Even then, the BMW 733i High Security offered a holistic security concept and hence considerable advantages compared to retro-fitted security vehicles. For each of the following generations, a high security version of the luxury sedan was also produced.

Further security vehicles were built based on the BMW 3 Series and the BMW 5 Series. In 2004, the BMW X5 Security was the first Sports Activity Vehicle with model-specific protective equipment to arrive on the market. In 2009, the BMW X5 Security Plus was the first vehicle of its kind to comply with the requirements of resistance class 6. With the new BMW X5 Protection VR6, the fourth generation of the SAV is now offered as a security vehicle. The equipment features designed to offer protection against attacks and other hazards have been consistently further developed during the course of time. Thus, once again, the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 sets benchmarks in the protection of persons at risk.

Munich. The two new top models in the BMW X family exude a supreme presence with a corresponding performance. Their concentrated power is generated by the new 8-cylinder petrol engine – based on BMW TwinPower Turbo technology with a maximum output of 390 kW – built into both the BMW X5 M50i (fuel consumption combined: 10,7 – 10,5 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 243 – 238 g/km) and the BMW X7 M50i (fuel consumption combined: 11,1 – 10,9 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 252 – 248 g/km) models. More than ever before, these new top-flight engines underline the sporty nature of the latest generation of the original Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) – and the first BMW X model in the luxury segment. Both models combine the V8 engine with the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system and a model-specific suspension technology, developed with expertise from BMW M GmbH.

Like the drive and suspension technology, the model-specific design features of the new BMW X5 M50i and the new BMW X7 M50i have passed through a consistent design process that has resulted in an absolutely breath-taking motoring experience. Moreover, the exclusive nature of the new 8-cylinder models is reflected in the extremely high quality of their standard equipment. The new BMW X5 M50i and the new BMW X7 M50i will be produced from August 2019 at the BMW plant in Spartanburg in the USA and will be available in South Africa from October 2019.

New V8 engine with outstanding power and characteristic sound.

The 4.4 litre drive unit of the new BMW X5 M50i and the new BMW X7 M50i emphasise the characteristic features of the 8-cylinder engines in terms of power development and torque to an outstanding degree. The new V8 engine turns in a very impressive level of performance – whether you prefer cruising calmly and confidently at low engine speeds or pulling out all the performance stops and laying down some sporty acceleration manoeuvres. Several components have been upgraded since the previous engine version; these include the crankcase, cylinder barrels, pistons, crankshaft and cylinder head – and above all, the freshly updated BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The turbochargers positioned between the cylinder banks in the V compartment have been enlarged, while the direct petrol injection performs at a new maximum pressure level of 350 bar. The technology package also includes the newest versions of the fully variable VALVETRONIC valve control and variable double VANOS camshaft control.

The new V8 engine responds with great sensitivity to every movement of the accelerator pedal. The engine already generates its maximum torque of 750 Nm at 1 800 rpm – and it remains available up to an engine speed of 4 600 rpm. Accordingly, the power output is as strident as you would expect it to be. The maximum value of 390 kW is activated between 5 500 and 6 000 rpm. As a result, the new BMW X5 M50i is able to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. The new BMW X7 M50i completes its standard sprint in 4.7 seconds.

This supreme power development is accompanied by an impressive sound progression that is generated by the standard M sport exhaust system. Using the driving experience control, the driver can choose between an extremely sporty or a more comfort-oriented mode. The sheer bandwidth of the engine’s character then becomes all the more obvious. In the SPORT and SPORT PLUS modes, not only is the characteristic curve of the accelerator pedal configured for a dynamic driving style, but the power development and remarkable sound characteristics of the V8 engine are too.

8-speed Steptronic sports transmission, BMW xDrive and M sports differential for thrilling performance.

The performance features of both of these thoroughly sports-oriented SAV models are supported by the rather specific nature of the power transmission. The new V8 engine is combined as standard with an 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission, characterised by highly dynamic gear shift properties. Shift paddles are mounted near the steering wheel for manual control of the choice of gear. The Launch Control function enables traction-optimised acceleration with maximum dynamic performance from standing.

The latest version of the BMW xDrive system distributes the engine torque between the front and rear wheels in a manner that enables it to adapt quickly and precisely to the road conditions. The intelligent all-wheel drive system increases the agility and supreme traction of the new BMW X5 M50i and the new BMW X7 M50i as much as it enhances the driving stability in all weather and road conditions. These sporty characteristics are also supported in highly dynamic driving situations by the rear-wheel emphasis of the system’s design. In addition, the standard equipment of the new BMW X5 M50i and the new BMW X7 M50i also includes an M sports differential. The electronically controlled differential lock in the rear bevel gears limits the rotational speed balancing between the wheel on the innermost side of a bend and that on the outermost side and enables highly dynamic acceleration when exiting a bend. In addition, the M sports differential, which is interconnected with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), optimises traction and power transmission when driving on loose terrain and when different road friction values exist between the right and left rear wheels. This serves to prevent wheel spinning arising due to insufficient grip, with the torque being redirected to the other wheel.

Model-specific suspension technology for a superior drive.

The model-specific suspension of the new BMW X5 M50i and the new BMW X7 M50i has been painstakingly tuned to extract maximum potential from the outstanding drive design based on the know-how of BMW M GmbH. Both models employ a construction principle comprising a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle combined with specific kinematics and elastokinematics for the wheel suspension, independent suspension and damping settings, and 21 inch M light alloy wheels complete with mixed tyres. The standard equipment also includes electromechanical steering with Servotronic function and an M sport brake system with blue-coated brake calipers complete with M logo. Also available as optional equipment are 22 inch light alloy wheels, again fitted with mixed tyres.

The new BMW X5 M50i is equipped with Adaptive M suspension. One of two sets of characteristics can be selected for the electronically controlled dampers, which can be activated using the driving experience switches, comprising COMFORT and SPORT modes. The new BMW X7 M50i is fitted with adaptive dual axle air suspension, which is also available optionally for the new BMW X5 M50i. In the SPORT driving mode, as well as at speeds of over 138 km/h, this automatically results in a reduced ride height of 20 millimetres. However, the driver is also able to adjust the height of the body by activating a button in the cockpit; two levels are available, raising the height up to 40 millimetres above the standard setting; this is useful when driving off-road, for example.

Optional integral active steering is available for both models, which serves to further enhance the vehicle’s agility. It also results in enhanced superiority when it comes to lane changing and manoeuvrability in urban traffic, by co-steering the rear wheels either in the same or in the opposite direction, depending on the driving speed. A further increase in superiority and dynamics of the drive characteristics is produced by the integral active steering, the active electronic anti roll stabilizers, which ensures very fast and precise balancing of lateral roll forces during dynamic cornering, by means of electric swivel motors fitted to the front and rear axles. Both are an integral part of the optional Adaptive M Suspension Professional package for the new BMW X5 M50i and the optional Executive Drive Pro equipment available for the new BMW X7 M50i.

Design and equipment: exclusive appearance with a luxurious atmosphere.

Model-specific designer features serve to emphasise the exclusive and sporty nature of the new BMW X5 M50i and the new BMW X7 M50i the moment you see it. The extra-large air inlets in the front apron are a clear indication of the V8 engine’s cooling requirements. The unique design of the side sills and rear apron, the BMW individual high-gloss Shadow Line, and selected design elements in Cerium Grey similarly serve to underline the outstanding status of the 8-cylinder models.

The interior of the two top models of the BMW X family features an M leather steering wheel, a gear selector lever displaying the M logo, Vernasca leather upholstery with contrast stitching and perforated surfaces and interior strips in Aluminium Tetragon (BMW X5 M50i) or Fineline Black precious wood finish with high-gloss metallic effect, together ensuring a luxurious feel with a sporty touch. And as if that wasn’t enough, the standard equipment also comprises illuminated entry sills displaying the ’M50i’ logo, a headliner in Anthracite (BMW X5 M50i) or Alcantara Anthracite (BMW X7 M50i) and a Hi-Fi loudspeaker system (BMW X5 M50i) or Harman Kardon surround sound system (BMW X7 M50i).

The year of the BMW X model is continuing to hit another highpoint. Following the market launch of the first BMW X2 earlier this year and the new BMW X4, a new edition of the original BMW X model is now ready for action. The fourth generation of the BMW X5 is now available in South Africa and impresses with its wealth of innovations and represents the most compelling embodiment yet of the familiar Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) blueprint: the ability to venture off road combined with a talent for dynamic driving pleasure on it. Like its predecessors, the BMW X5 will be built at BMW Plant Spartanburg in the US. Its worldwide market launch has begun (November 2018).

Two diesel engines are available from launch and a host of chassis systems making their debut in a BMW X model – such as two-axle air suspension, Integral Active Steering and the Off-Road package – enhance the car’s versatility, dynamic ability and comfort levels. The highlights of its significantly expanded suite of driver assistance systems, meanwhile, are the Driving Assist Professional and Parking Assist Plus with Reversing Assistant. In addition, the new BMW X5 hosts the unveiling of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional (fitted as standard), which allows the display and control system to be geared even more precisely to individual driver needs.

Like its predecessors and indeed the entire BMW X model family, the fourth generation of the BMW X5 (combined fuel consumption 11.6-6.0 l/100 km; combined CO₂emissions: 264–158 g/km; provisional figures*) combines impressive off-road performance with outstanding driving dynamics quality on the road. With an extensive range of M Performance Parts for the new premium SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle), BMW now in particular addresses those customers who wish to selectively refine the vehicle's sporty character and give this aspect further emphasise the character. The M Performance Parts available through the Original BMW Accessories programme will be available right on time for the worldwide market launch of the BMW X5 in March 2019.

Development of the full range of M Performance Parts has always drawn on the extensive motor racing expertise of BMW M GmbH. All components are perfectly matched – both with each other and with the specific properties of each model. In this way, they not only give the vehicle concerned a more striking, dynamic appearance but also serve a functional purpose. The features have a positive impact on the vehicle’s aerodynamic properties, for instance, or contribute additionally to the intelligent lightweight concept. 

The numerous exterior components in carbon fibre make for a more pronounced appearance. 
The M Performance exterior components in carbon fibre are especially effective in creating a particularly striking look in the BMW X5 that is clearly inspired by motor racing. They are all characterised by the honeycomb structure that is so typical of carbon fibre reinforced plastic. Finished by hand and sealed with a clear finish, the components are given a final high-gloss polish for an impressive depth effect. For example, the air intake trim element for the standard bumper and the front winglets not only visually enhance the front section, they also highlight the breadth of the SAV model. At the rear, the same applies to the rear winglets and the rear diffuser. The range of M exterior components in carbon fibre is rounded off with exterior mirror caps.

Finally, M Performance side sill foils in black matt are available for further enhancement of the vehicle’s sporty external look. They run from the front to the rear wheel arch along the entire lower sill and are branded with the M Performance inscription. 

All-terrain wheels available from BMW as M Performance Parts for the first time.

For customers who prefer to highlight and make use of the off-road capabilities of their BMW X5, the 20'' M light alloy wheel Star Spoke 748 M with all-terrain tyres is now available for the fourth generation of the BMW X5. The colour BMW M logo is especially eye-catching due to the fact that the rim is finished in sporty matt black. The specific rim design combined with the striking tread design of the all-terrain tyre reflects both robustness and stability. This new wheel/tyre combination also offers good rid comfort and is approved for use in winter.

Optional 22-inch tyres are also available for customers, that include a set of wheels from the M Performance Parts range. The 22" M Performance light alloy wheel Start Spoke 749 M with rolled rim well (flow forming) is about one kilogram lighter than a comparable wheel of the same size due to the special manufacturing technique used. All in all, the unsprung masses are reduced by approx. four kilograms as a result, which impacts positively on driving dynamics and turn-in response. 

Weight-optimised design also characterises the M Performance sports brake: the 4-piston fixed calipers on the front axle are made of aluminium, for example. Meanwhile the inner-vented and perforated M Performance brake discs – which are larger than in the serial brakes (19 inches) – ensure improved thermal resilience and therefore an increased braking effect even in extreme conditions. The brake calipers finished in red visually highlight the M Performance sports brake – and especially striking feature in conjunction with wheels that have an open rim design such as the M Performance light alloy wheel Star Spoke 749 M.

Carbon fibre look and motor racing functionality on the inside, too.
A wide selection of M Performance components derived from and inspired by motor racing is also available for the interior of the new BMW X5, once again providing both visual and functional enhancement. The M Performance steering wheel ensures the driver has secure control over the dynamic SAV at all times, for example. This is due to the extremely high-grip Alcantara handling area with large thumbrests and special underlining for excellent stability and a direct steering feel. In addition to standard details such as the red centre marking at the 12 o’clock position and the silver-grey, hand-sewn cross-stitch, the M Performance steering wheel is also available with M Performance steering wheel trim in carbon fibre with M Performance inscription and Alcantara insert. To match this, the shift paddles can also be selected in an M Performance finish featuring carbon fabric instead of the standard chrome surface.

It is also possible to give the driver’s workplace a motor racing look and feel in areas that are outside the direct field of vision in the new BMW X5. Contributing factors here are the M Performance floor mats with M Performance inscription, a pennant in the typical M colours and a surround in leather look including decorative seam in contrasting colours, as well as pedal pads and footrest in stainless steel. The asymmetrical profiles of the latter underscore the striking motor racing look.

Drive Analyser for comprehensive driving style analysis.
The M Performance Drive Analyser is available to those wanting to achieve motor racing optimisation not just in the BMW X5 itself but also in terms of their own driving style. It consists of an OBD stick, which is plugged into the on-board diagnosis socket, and a smartphone app. The Drive Analyser is derived directly from motor racing: it provides the driver with all the main driving dynamics data, offering extensive and professional logging and analysis options. It also enables trip recording on a smartphone video camera, driving data logging and route tracking based on GPS position data.

A love of motor racing in general and M Performance products in particular can also be expressed by means of features that are not directly connected with the driving experience in the new BMW X5 itself. The M Performance slide set for the BMW LED door projectors enables the BMW M logo or other motifs relating to M Performance to be projected onto the asphalt when getting in and out of the car, for example. The M Performance key wallet made of high-quality Alcantara with carbon fibre insert can by firmly attached to the vehicle key by means of a hexagon socket screw in M light blue, thereby protecting it from scratches and damage. Munich. Efficiency meets supremacy: the drive portfolio of the new BMW X5 is to be extended in the course of 2019 with the addition of a plug-in hybrid system. The new BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance combines a model-specific in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology with the very latest BMW eDrive technology. Consistent progress in the area of plug-hybrid drive has produced a system output now increased to 290 kW, a tangible enhancement in terms of electrically powered range and a significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO₂ levels as compared to the predecessor model.

More impressively than ever, the second generation of the plug-in hybrid model combines the purely electrically powered driving pleasure of a BMW iPerformance automobile with the versatility that is typical of a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). In doing so, the new BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance offers optimised qualities in terms of both driving dynamics and efficiency. It does the sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds – more than one second less than the predecessor model. The top speed when driving on electric power alone is increased from 120 to 140 km/h. Its electrically powered range is now approximately 80 kilometres*, almost three times that of its predecessor. The combined fuel consumption of the new BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance drops to 2.1 litres per 100 kilometres*, while the relevant CO₂ emissions figure is now 49 grams per kilometre*.

These improved levels are the result of a completely newly developed drive technology. It comprises a 3.0-litre and 210 kW in-line 6-cylinder engine from the current BMW EfficientDynamics drive family and the latest generation of BMW eDrive technology. An electrical system output of 82 kW, a lithium-ion battery with extended storage capacity and further developed power electronics for intelligent energy management give the plug-in hybrid system of the BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance unique performance characteristics as well as an impressive level of efficiency. Together, the two drive units generate a system output of 290 kW along with a maximum system torque of 600 Nm. The combustion engine and electric motor deliver their power to an 8-speed Steptronic transmission of the latest generation and the intelligent all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive. In this way, the drive torque is transferred to all four wheels when driving on electric power alone as well as when using the combustion engine or indeed both drive units: this ensures sporty driving pleasure on the road and supreme off-road performance over loose terrain at all times. The top speed of the BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance is 235 km/h.

Thanks to the high-voltage battery positioned in the underbody area of the vehicle, the centre of gravity is lower than in conventionally powered SAV model variants. The luggage compartment volume of the BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance is only some 150 litres less. When all seats are used, the storage volume is 500 litres; if the rear backrests are folded down, a volume of 1 716 litres is available. The volume of the fuel tank is 69 litres – suitable for long distances.

The new BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance is fitted as standard with a two-axle air suspension and electronically controlled dampers. The optional suspension systems available for the plug-in hybrid model include integral active steering. In addition to a comprehensive selection of features in the area of intelligent connectivity, new digital services are also offered that are geared specifically towards electromobility. In addition, all driver assistance systems developed for the Sports Activity Vehicle as well as high-quality options to enhance comfort and luxurious interior ambience are also available for the new BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance.

The intelligent hybrid powertrain control ensures that the engine and the electric motor act in unison in a way that optimises efficiency while also catering perfectly to the driver’s wishes. The eDrive button on the centre console allows the driver to adjust the hybrid drive’s operating mode. In the AUTO eDrive basic setting, the engine’s power is boosted to noticeable effect when accelerating or during quick bursts of speed by the electric drive, whose full torque of 250 Newton metres is on tap from standstill for instantaneous power delivery. Alternatively, the MAX eDrive mode can be engaged, enabling the BMW X5 xDrive40e to run purely on electric power – when driving in urban traffic for instance – resulting in zero local emissions. When the high-voltage battery is fully charged, the vehicle has a range of up to 31 kilometres in the all-electric drive mode with a limited maximum speed of 120 km/h. The SAVE Battery mode can also be activated at the touch of a button, causing the high-voltage battery’s state of charge to be maintained or allowing energy to be accumulated again, e.g. by means of recuperation, if capacity is low. In this way, electrical energy can be deliberately conserved for all-electric driving later in the journey.

Regardless of the setting chosen with the eDrive button, the power stemming from both drive sources is permanently transmitted to the road via the intelligent all-wheel-drive system, BMW xDrive. The various vehicle set-ups that can be selected with the Driving Experience Control switch – COMFORT, SPORT and ECO PRO – are also available in all drive modes.

Hybrid-specific products and services from BMW ConnectedDrive and BMW 360° ELECTRIC.All of the driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive offered as standard or as optional extras for the BMW X5 are also available to provide enhanced driving pleasure in the model variant with eDrive technology. An intelligent energy management function is also offered as a special model-specific feature that can be used in conjunction with the Navigation system Professional which is fitted as standard in the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Whenever route guidance is active, data on the route profile is factored into powertrain control along with real-time traffic information. When driving medium to long distances, the system can therefore ensure it is possible to drive purely on electric power on urban sections by using Brake Energy Regeneration and managing the high-voltage battery’s energy reserves in a targeted and efficient manner.

The hybrid-specific version of the BMW Remote app makes it possible to check the high-voltage battery’s state of charge, locate public charging stations or call up efficiency evaluations for the BMW X5 xDrive40e on a smartphone. The auxiliary heating and ventilation functions can also be activated remotely.

The BMW i Wallbox  including installation service, are available for home charging as part of the BMW 360° ELECTRIC concept, offering customers a particularly fast and convenient means of recharging the high-voltage battery while parked. Model-specific assistance services are also available. The ChargeNow service provides cash-free access to all BMW charging stations with the ChargeNow card.

Wide-ranging equipment options.
The comprehensive standard specification of the BMW X5 on the plug-in hybrid model is extended to include the Navigation system Professional as well as an auxiliary heating and ventilation system. This is powered by electricity from the high-voltage battery or from the mains supply while charging. The SAVE Battery mode can also be activated at the touch of a button, causing the high-voltage battery’s state of charge to be maintained or allowing energy to be accumulated again, e.g. by means of recuperation, if capacity is low. In this way, electrical energy can be deliberately conserved for all-electric driving later in the journey.

Regardless of the setting chosen with the eDrive button, the power stemming from both drive sources is permanently transmitted to the road via the intelligent all-wheel-drive system, BMW xDrive. The various vehicle set-ups that can be selected with the Driving Experience Control switch – COMFORT, SPORT and ECO PRO – are also available in all drive modes.

Hybrid-specific products and services from BMW ConnectedDrive and BMW 360° ELECTRIC.
All of the driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive offered as standard or as optional extras for the BMW X5 are also available to provide enhanced driving pleasure in the model variant with eDrive technology. An intelligent energy management function is also offered as a special model-specific feature that can be used in conjunction with the Navigation system Professional which is fitted as standard in the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Whenever route guidance is active, data on the route profile is factored into powertrain control along with real-time traffic information. When driving medium to long distances, the system can therefore ensure it is possible to drive purely on electric power on urban sections by using Brake Energy Regeneration and managing the high-voltage battery’s energy reserves in a targeted and efficient manner.

The hybrid-specific version of the BMW Remote app makes it possible to check the high-voltage battery’s state of charge, locate public charging stations or call up efficiency evaluations for the BMW X5 xDrive40e on a smartphone. The auxiliary heating and ventilation functions can also be activated remotely.

The BMW i Wallbox Pure and BMW i Wallbox Pro , including installation service, are available for home charging as part of the BMW 360° ELECTRIC concept, offering customers a particularly fast and convenient means of recharging the high-voltage battery while parked. Model-specific assistance services are also available. The ChargeNow service provides cash-free access to an extensive partner network of charging stations and billing of the charging costs with the ChargeNow card. The mobility service ParkNow Longterm, meanwhile, makes it easier to find a parking space or locate and book a parking spot with charging facilities.

Wide-ranging equipment options.
The comprehensive standard specification of the BMW X5 on the plug-in hybrid model is extended to include the Navigation system Professional as well as an auxiliary heating and ventilation system. This is powered by electricity from the high-voltage battery or from the mains supply while charging. The BMW X5 xDrive40e additionally comes equipped as standard with the Adaptive Suspension Package Comfort including rear air suspension and Dynamic Damper Control.

Beyond this, practically all the optional extras offered for the BMW X5 can also be specified for the plug-in hybrid model. The Design Pure Experience and Pure Excellence packages for the exterior and interior are also available for the BMW X5 xDrive40e, as are the M Sport package and the bespoke features from BMW Individual.

The BMW X5 – the founder of the Sports Activity Vehicle segment and globally best-selling car in its class, with more than 1.3 million units sold since the launch of the first generation – is entering a new chapter in its successful history. The third-generation X5 sees BMW once again setting the benchmark for powerful design, interior spaciousness and luxury, versatility, driving pleasure, efficiency and innovative equipment features. The new BMW X5 offers customers an assured all-round package equipped to meet the most exacting and varied demands.

Customers keen to make the configuration of the exterior and interior a little more individual can vary the car’s basic equipment with the M Sport package and Pure Experience and Pure Excellence “design worlds”. The defining features of the on-board experience of the new BMW X5 are an exclusive interior ambience with luxurious design, high-quality materials and innovative comfort-enhancing functions.

Standard BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive can be complemented by Dynamic Performance Control as part of the optional Dynamic and Professional adaptive suspension packages. The Dynamic adaptive suspension package also includes Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation for a targeted improvement of the car’s sporty handling attributes. There is also the option of the Comfort active suspension package, which provides further enhanced ride comfort thanks to air suspension at the rear axle and Dynamic Damper Control. Adaptive M suspension, available as part of the M Sport package, also includes Dynamic Damper Control and rear-axle air suspension as well as specifically sports-oriented suspension tuning. The Professional adaptive suspension package, meanwhile, combines the features of Comfort and Dynamic. This choice allows drivers to select noticeably enhanced comfort or hallmark BMW sporting capability, as desired.

The selection of engines available from launch comprises a V8 engine producing 330 kW for the BMW X5 xDrive50i and the 190 kW six-cylinder in-line diesel earmarked for the BMW X5 xDrive30d. They are joined by an M Performance Automobile in the shape of the BMW X5 M50d. All models fulfil the EU6 exhaust stipulations as standard.

BMW EfficientDynamics technology allows all variants of the Sports Activity Vehicle to combine raised performance with reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The increases in efficiency over the predecessor model have been achieved through measures including intelligent lightweight construction techniques and aerodynamic optimisations, which give the new BMW X5 xDrive30d, for example, a class-leading drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.31.

The range of BMW ConnectedDrive features is now also larger than ever, and includes innovative driver assistance systems, some of which are unique among the BMW X5’s rivals. The Sports Activity Vehicle also impresses with its outstanding practicality, headlined by its standard 40 : 20 : 40 split/folding rear seat backrest, load capacity rising from 650 to a maximum 1,870 litres and an optional third row of two additional seats.

Exterior design: an elegant blend of robust presence and dynamic flair.

Signature BMW design features combine with undeniable presence, robustness and versatility to lend BMW X models their distinctive appearance. And this design language has been given a modern and eye-catching update for the new BMW X5. The proportions of the third-generation Sports Activity Vehicle are once again defined by a short front overhang, long wheelbase, upright A-pillars and the short distance between the front axle and instrument panel. The particularly muscular design of the BMW kidney grille, set within the triangle of the twin circular headlights and front foglamps, and the bumper’s X-shaped contour lines also mark it out as a member of the BMW X model family.

The new BMW X5 has an extremely broad-set kidney grille extending all the way to the headlight units, and the hallmark BMW twin circular headlights, in turn, stretch well into the car’s side panels. Their light rings are each levelled off at the bottom and overlapped at their top edge by an LED accent light. Sweeping chrome inserts and the prominently three-dimensional design of the lights underline the car’s sophisticated character. LED front foglamps can be specified as an option, while the likewise optional Adaptive LED Headlights are identified by the horizontal light sources in the centre of the light rings. The BMW X5 xDrive50i and BMW X5 M50d are equipped with xenon headlights as standard.

The front apron, with side air intakes positioned far to its outer edges, draws further attention to the wide track and planted stance of the new BMW X5. And the car’s striking underbody protection elements provide a further nod to its robust and versatile character. Elsewhere, drag-reducing Air Curtains make their debut on a BMW X model. These vertical apertures guide the inflowing air around the wheel arches, where it creates a curtain of air over the wheels before making a controlled escape through the Air Breathers in the side panels.

The design of the BMW X5’s flanks shines a particularly clear spotlight on the car’s power and sporting ability. Precisely drawn lines rising up towards the rear end build a wedge shape exuding dynamic intent and break up the taut surfaces around the front side panels, doors and rear wheel arches. The resulting light and shadow effects bring out the athleticism and agility of the Sports Activity Vehicle.

The car’s upright front end, with its forward-thrusting BMW kidney grille, cuts an arresting figure from the side. The familiar BMW swage line, meanwhile, rises steadily from the headlight units, through the door pulls and into the rear lights. It combines with the character line extending from the upper edge of the Air Breathers and another, more obvious crease above the side skirts to stretch the figure-hugging surfaces of the car’s flanks powerfully to the rear.

The clear subdivision between the muscular body and a passenger compartment, whose large windows lend it a light and spacious feel, is clearly visible from the rear as well as from the side. Horizontal lines on the two-section tailgate and around the rear apron emphasise the width and robust stance of the new BMW X5. The thin, three-dimensional LED light strips of the two-section, L-shaped rear lights create a striking night-time look. Plus, the new BMW X5 is the brand’s first model to feature Aero Blades. These black air-channelling elements are contiguous with the roof spoiler and help it to optimise the car’s aerodynamic properties.

The exterior paintwork of the new BMW X5 can be ordered in a choice of 10 colours, among them the new metallic finish Sparkling Brown Brilliant Effect.

Interior design: high-quality materials, luxurious ambience, cutting-edge functionality.

The interior of the new BMW X5 is both elegant and generously sized. The horizontal structure of the layered surfaces underlines the broad sweep of the instrument panel and therefore also the impressive amount of space available on board. Plus, the three-dimensional design of the surfaces also generates vibrant contrasts.

The ambient lighting designs included in the lighting package lend extra emphasis to the visual unity between the instrument panel and door panels. LED units arranged in a wrap-around contour line and featuring in other areas of the interior create an alluring effect. Blue, white and orange light can be selected either individually or in nine pre-stored combinations via the iDrive system. The interior materials selected for the new BMW X5 also play a role in shaping the exclusive onboard ambience. The trim strip and accent strip extend into the front door panels and are picked up again in the rear door panels. Plus, the standard Oxide Silver dark matt (BMW X5 xDrive30d), Poplar Grain fine wood (BMW X5 xDrive50i) or Aluminium Hexagon (BMW X5 M50d) interior trim elements now sit atop a high-gloss black surface, which is bordered on its lower edge by an accent strip in Pearl Gloss Chrome.

The freestanding, up to 10.25-inch Control Display linked to the standard-fitted iDrive operating system adds further appeal. The displays for the climate control and ventilation systems – and, as an option, the instrument cluster – feature black panel technology.

The seat surfaces can be specified as an option in Dakota leather or – as part of the Pure Experience and Pure Excellence interior design lines – Exclusive Nappa leather with extended features. Customers can choose from seven upholstery colours.

Astute individualisation: Design Pure Experience and Design Pure Excellence for the exterior and interior.

Two new “design worlds” for the exterior and interior of the new BMW X5 can be ordered as an alternative to the standard specification, enabling an astutely judged level of personalisation. Each package represents a harmonious blend of design, colours and materials. The design worlds for the exterior and interior can be selected independently – i.e. customers can combine them both with one another and with standard specification, as desired. In addition, the two interior design packages are also available in combination with the M Sport package. The design worlds also encompass the new-look remote control key with operating buttons in an extremely high-quality design.

Design Pure Experience: presence and robustness

With stylistic underbody protection elements in brushed stainless steel, newly designed air intake bars in matt silver and a rear trim strip which, like the kidney grille bars, comes in matt silver, the Design Pure Experience package adds distinctive touches to the exterior and once again emphasises the SAV character of the BMW X5. This design world also includes exterior mirror bases and B-pillar and C-pillar trim in high-gloss black, as well as BMW Individual Exterior Line Aluminium satinated trim for the side windows. The exhaust tailpipe embellishers have a matt chrome finish.

The Design Pure Experience line uses a dark yet warm colour scheme to bring a classically stylish and luxurious ambience to the interior of the new BMW X5. It offers Exclusive Nappa leather trim, including extended features in Mocha/Black with contrast stitching, plus interior trim strips in textured Fineline Pure high-quality wood. The fulled leather surfaces of the instrument panel and upper-arm trim panels come in black with contrast stitching in Nut Brown. The lower section of the instrument panel is in Mocha.

Design Pure Excellence: modern and luxurious.

The Design Pure Excellence line for the exterior includes stylistic underbody protection elements and wheel arch surrounds painted in the respective body colour, black kidney grille bars with high-gloss chrome fronts, T-shaped bars for the outer air intakes and louvres for the lower aperture, plus a chrome trim strip for the rear apron and Chrome Line Exterior adornments for the side windows. The exterior mirror bases, B-pillars and C-pillars all feature high-gloss black trim.

The Design Pure Excellence package lends the interior an elegant and choice ambience through the use of Exclusive Nappa leather trim, including extended features in Ivory White with contrast stitching, fine wood interior trim elements in American Oak and a fulled leather surface for the instrument panel and door panels in Atlas Grey with contrast stitching. The lower section of the instrument panel comes in matching Ivory White.

Variable-usage interior, up to seven seats and even greater versatility.

With its luxurious ambience and enhanced ride comfort, spaciousness and seating comfort, the new BMW X5 offers noticeable advances over its predecessor. Added to which, the array of possible uses for its generously sized interior has grown once again. The newly designed seats for the driver and front passenger ensure a high level of long-distance comfort and impressive lateral hold through dynamically taken corners. Comfort seats and sports seats (standard in the BMW X5 M50d) are available as options.

Seat heating and comfort seats are both now also available for the rear compartment. The comfort seats come with bespoke upholstery, backrest adjustment through 10 degrees and 80 millimetres of fore/aft adjustment. The rear comfort seats can be specified either as an individual option or together with the optional third row of seats. The two additional seats are easy to access thanks to an Easy Entry function and a grip plate by the C-pillar. They can be lowered separately into the load compartment floor, are designed primarily for passengers measuring a maximum 1.50 metres in height and come with inertia-reel seat belts.

The folding backrest of the second-row seat bench can now be split 40 : 20 : 40, which allows load capacity to be increased in stages from 650 to as much as 1,870 litres – that’s 30 litres / 120 litres more than the predecessor model. Additional storage compartments and door pockets which can accommodate 1.5-litre bottles (front) and one-litre bottles (in the rear) also contribute to the car’s impressive functionality both in day-to-day use and on longer journeys.

The new BMW X5 also comes with a split two-section tailgate, the lower element of which can be folded down horizontally to form a single level with the load surface. Automatic tailgate operation for the upper section is a standard feature. And now, for the first time, the tailgate can be closed as well as opened using the remote control and, at the touch of a button, from the driver’s seat. An electrically pivoting trailer coupling can be ordered as an option, as can roof rails in three different design variants.

Engines: more driving enjoyment and efficiency with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.

As the first ever Sports Activity Vehicle, the BMW X5 continues to set the trends and standards in its segment, with the accent firmly on driving enjoyment and efficiency. The new-generation V8 engine, for example, fitted in the BMW X5 xDrive50i, now develops 10 per cent – or 30 kW – more power (330 kW) than its predecessor, and combines this with a 16 per cent reduction in average fuel consumption. The improvement is down to BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, which in addition to twin turbochargers and High Precision Injection direct petrol injection now also includes VALVETRONIC variable valve timing, resulting in improved response and efficiency. Maximum torque of this 4.4-litre engine is now 650 Newton metres (+ 50 Nm), which is delivered between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm. The new BMW X5 xDrive50i completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.0 seconds (– 0.5 seconds), and returns average fuel consumption of between 10.4 and 10.5 litres/100 km – that’s a 2.0 litre/100 km improvement. CO2 emissions are down 50 grams per kilometre, at 242/244 g/km (according to the EU test cycle and depending on tyre format).

The new BMW X5 xDrive30d too, with its six-cylinder in-line diesel engine, incorporates a range of detail improvements that offer an even better balance than before between performance and fuel consumption. The 3.0-litre engine, whose BMW TwinPower Turbo technology comprises VNT turbocharging and common rail direct injection, now develops maximum power of 190 kW (+ 10 kW), and maximum torque of 560 Newton metres (+ 20 Nm), which is delivered between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm. The new BMW X5 xDrive30d has a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 6.9 seconds (– 0.7 seconds). Average fuel economy in the EU test cycle has been improved by 16 per cent – or 1.2 litres per 100 kilometres – to 6.2 l/100 km, with CO2 emissions of between 162 and 164 g/km (– 31 g/km), depending on the tyre format.

The sporty temperament of the latest diesel engines finds even more potent expression in the BMW X5 M50d. This M Performance Automobile likewise gets a 3.0-litre straight-six unit, in this case featuring M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology with three-stage turbocharging. The three turbochargers work in harmony to maximise power output. Fuel is supplied via a common rail piezo injection system developing maximum pressure of 2,200 bar. This engine has a maximum output of 280 kW and develops its peak torque of 740 Newton metres between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm. The 0–100 km/h time of the BMW X5 M50d is 5.3 seconds (– 0.1 seconds), with average EU fuel consumption of 6.7 litres/100 km, an 11 per cent (0.8 l/100 km / 4.5 mpg imp) improvement on the predecessor model. CO2 emissions stand at 177 g/km (–22 g/km).

The BMW X5 line-up will expand further in February 2014. The BMW X5 xDrive35i (225 kW) has average fuel consumption of 8.5 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions of 199 grams per kilometre, while the BMW X5 xDrive40d (230 kW) posts average fuel consumption of 6.4 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions of 169 grams per kilometre.

All versions of the new BMW X5 are already compliant with the EU6 emissions standard, which will apply from September 2014. On the diesel models, the lower nitrogen oxide limits are met using a close-coupled NOX adsorber catalyst and an SCR catalyst with urea (AdBlue) injection.

BMW EfficientDynamics as standard: eight-speed automatic transmission and ECO PRO mode with new functions.

All engines in the new BMW X5 line-up are combined as standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission, whose high internal efficiency, precision and short shift times help to improve both efficiency and driving enjoyment. The extremely fast-shifting eight-speed sports automatic version used in the BMW X5 M50d comes with steering-wheel shift paddles, which are optionally available for the other new BMW X5 models as well. In vehicles with the eight-speed sports automatic transmission, the new “launch control” function is also available, a high-precision traction control system which allows engine power to be translated as efficiently as possible into road speed when accelerating from standstill.

In ECO PRO mode, the engine management, accelerator response and transmission characteristics are systematically tailored to support a particularly fuel-efficient, low-rpm driving style. At the same time, ECO PRO mode also programs electrically powered functions like the climate control, heated seats and heated exterior mirrors for extra-efficient energy management. In ECO PRO mode, a coasting function periodically decouples the engine from the rest of the powertrain whenever the driver eases off the accelerator at speeds between 50 and 160 km/h and does not apply the brakes at the same time. This allows the new BMW X5 to coast without engine braking, for maximised fuel efficiency. In conjunction with the optional Navigation system Professional, highly fuel-efficient ECO PRO navigation routes can be selected.

Along with the additional ECO PRO mode functions, the new BMW X5 also comes with many other BMW EfficientDynamics features. These include Brake Energy Regeneration, the Auto Start Stop function, on-demand operation of ancillary units, Electric Power Steering, low roll-resistance tyres and a variety of weight- and drag-reducing features. Along with other measures, use of ultra-high-tensile steels in the body structure, thermoplastics in the side panels, aluminium in the bonnet and magnesium in the instrument panel support make the new BMW X5 the lightest vehicle in its class. Intelligent lightweight design also means that the significantly increased standard specification compared with the previous model does not translate to increased vehicle weight. Indeed, depending on the model, the new BMW X5 actually tips the scales as much as 90 kg lighter than a comparably equipped corresponding model from the previous X5 generation.

The BMW X5 also offers best-in-class aerodynamic design. Active upper and lower front air flap control, Air Curtains, the Air Breather system, vertical aero blades at the rear window, air deflectors on the front wheel arches and a range of other detail improvements reduce the drag coefficient (Cd), depending on the model, to as low as 0.31 (BMW X5 xDrive30d).

Chassis: adjustable for customised driving enjoyment.

Sports Activity Vehicles are a vehicle segment first defined by BMW. Their combination of confident, sure-footed off-road traction and sporty but comfortable on-road driving has made them a global success. The new BMW X5 represents a further evolution of these qualities, incorporating refinements to the all-wheel-drive system and chassis technology.

Using the standard-fitted Driving Experience Control switch on the centre console, the drive settings can be matched to the requirements of the moment or to different driving situations. The COMFORT, SPORT, SPORT+ and ECO PRO modes, which can be selected at the press of a button, allow the driver to customise the accelerator response characteristics, the power steering characteristics, the characteristics of the automatic transmission and also, on vehicles fitted with the optional Comfort and Professional Adaptive Suspension packages, the characteristics of the Dynamic Damper Control. On vehicles with the optional Dynamic and Professional Adaptive Suspension packages, the characteristics of the active roll stabilisation system and the Dynamic Performance Control can also be customised.

The suspension packages available for the new BMW X5 cater to individual requirements in terms of comfortable or sporty driving styles. The Comfort Adaptive Suspension package comprises Dynamic Damper control and air suspension with automatic self-levelling rear suspension. The electronic control logic adapts the damping characteristics to changing road conditions and driving situations. Two different damping modes can be selected using the Driving Experience Control switch. The same functionality is also provided by the Adaptive M suspension, which is standard on the BMW X5 M50d and also part of the M Sport package for the other model versions. In this version, SPORT or SPORT+ modes offer extra-firm suspension and damping characteristics.

The various components of the Dynamic Adaptive Suspension package provide significantly sportier cornering dynamics. Dynamic Performance Control and the Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation optimise directional stability and reduce body roll. Finally, the Professional Adaptive Suspension package maximises both comfort and dynamics. This option combines the components of the Comfort and Dynamic Suspension packages into an integrated system offering highest levels of driving enjoyment in all situations.

All versions of the new BMW X5 are equipped as standard with Electric Power Steering. For the BMW X5 xDrive50i and the BMW X5 xDrive30d, active steering is optionally available which, in addition to varying the power assist, also adjusts the steering input required to turn the wheels in relation to vehicle speed. This reduces the steering effort required when parking and provides precise response and feedback at high speed. The electromechanical parking brake with Auto Hold function is standard specification on the new BMW X5. The BMW X5 xDrive30d and BMW X5 xDrive50 are supplied with 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels respectively, while the BMW X5 M50d comes as standard with 19-inch “M” alloy wheels with mixed tyre sizes. Optionally, other 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels are available. Run-flat tyres are standard or optional, depending on the model. A Tyre Defect Indicator is standard on all versions of the new BMW X5.

The powerful braking system offers stable and consistent braking performance even under heavy braking, assisted by Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). Among other functions, the DSC system includes the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) and the Automatic Differential Brake (ADB-X). Further functions include Brake Assist, Fading Compensation, the Brake Drying function, trailer stability control and Hill Descent Control (HDC).

BMW xDrive in the new BMW X5: intelligent all-wheel drive, with optional Dynamic Performance Control.

The new BMW X5 is also equipped with xDrive full-time intelligent all-wheel drive, which actively manages the drive power split between the front and rear wheels at all times. The latest version of the xDrive power divider boasts optimised efficiency and a 1.4 kg reduction in weight. xDrive’s control logic uses information about road speed, wheel speeds, steering angle and accelerator position to accurately interpret both the driver’s intentions and what the car is actually doing, and then adjusts the drive power split so as to apply as much power as possible to the road. In this way xDrive provides top-class traction and stability whatever the road and weather conditions, and also offers improved cornering dynamics, suppressing oversteer or understeer before the driver is even aware of the need.

If xDrive is combined with Dynamic Performance Control, the drive power split can be even more finely controlled. DPC, likewise electronically controlled, is integrated in the rear differential. In combination with xDrive it takes handling dynamics and directional stability to new levels. Dynamic Performance Control, which is available as part of the optional Dynamic or Professional Adaptive Suspension packages, seamlessly varies the drive power split between the rear wheels (torque vectoring), with significant benefits in terms of steering response and track-holding at all speeds. The stabilising action of Dynamic Performance Control is not affected if the driver lifts off the accelerator while cornering.

All-wheel-drive models come with a new xDrive status display in the control display boasting 3D graphics. This standard-fitted feature shows real-time information about body roll and pitch. Plus, on vehicles equipped with the optional Navigation system Professional, a compass display is also shown in the instrument cluster.

They improve active safety, convenience and the infotainment experience and offer best-in-class standards of intelligent interaction between the driver, vehicle and external environment.

Safety: Driving Assist and Driving Assist Plus.

The new Driving Assist safety package includes Lane Departure Warning, which alerts drivers to an imminent unintended lane departure, and a pedestrian and collision warning system with braking function, which detects preceding vehicles and, at speeds up to 60 km/h, also pedestrians who are on a potential collision course with the vehicle. Visual and audible warnings are given if a hazard is detected and at the same time the brake system is primed in order to reduce stopping distance. At speeds up to 60 km/h, moderate “hazard” braking is actuated to reduce vehicle speed and alert the driver to a critical situation.

The Driving Assist Plus package provides even more support. Here the Driving Assistant functions are combined with the Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function, which enhances comfort and safety in slow-moving and stop-and-go traffic. This system maintains a safe following distance at any speed up to 210 km/h. A combination of a front camera and full-range radar sensors registers preceding traffic or stationary vehicles. If the driver fails to react to a warning of an imminent frontal collision, Driving Assist Plus automatically brakes the vehicle, if necessary to a standstill. A further Driving Assistant Plus function, the Traffic Jam Assistant, is due to be incorporated in this package from July 2014. At speeds up to 40 km/h, this function not only controls following distance but also keeps the vehicle on track. The Traffic Jam Assistant keeps the vehicle in the centre of its lane by providing active steering input.

The new BMW X5 will now be offered with the optional Active Protection system, with extended functionality. This safety package takes numerous steps in critical situations to minimise the consequences of a potential accident. It closes the side windows and the sunroof (if fitted), pulls the front seatbelts tight and adjusts the backrest of the front passenger seat to an upright position. Active Protection now also includes an Attention Assist feature, which analyses driving behaviour and advises when it is time to take a break.

BMW ConnectedDrive technologies also enhance safety at night. In addition to Adaptive Headlights with turning lights, Adaptive LED Headlights and the dynamically controlled anti-dazzle High Beam Assistant, which automatically blocks a portion of the headlight beam, nocturnal safety can be further assisted by BMW Night Vision. This system now detects not only pedestrians but also animals, and also includes the Dynamic Light Spot. The system relays a real-time video image to the control display which shows people, sizeable animals and other heat-radiating objects even if they are outside the headlight beam, and provides a warning if there is a collision risk. The Dynamic Light Spot is generated by a special light function which “spotlights” any persons or animals detected by the system, thereby guiding the driver’s attention in the right direction in good time.

Comfort: innovative driving assistance systems and unique services.

In the new BMW X5, the BMW Head-Up Display, which projects important information in full colour onto the windscreen, now includes additional content. When required, telephone contact lists and entertainment programmes can also be projected into the driver’s direct field of view.

Also new, is the latest generation of the BMW Park Assist. This helps the driver look for suitable parallel parking spaces and precisely manoeuvres the vehicle into a parking space, not only by steering but also by operating the accelerator and brake pedal and selecting the appropriate gear. When the system has been activated at the press of a button, the new BMW X5 can therefore park itself automatically in a selected parking space. Ease of manoeuvring is further enhanced by the rear-view camera and the Surround View system, which now provides a 360-degree view of the vehicle and its surroundings on the control display. The Panorama View front and rear monitoring function, meanwhile, provides a better view of cross-traffic when emerging from an exit with poor visibility.

The new BMW X5, too, can now be supplied with the Speed Limit Info system, which shows any speed limits or overtaking restrictions for a particular road in the instrument cluster. The likewise optional Lane Change Warning system assesses the traffic situation on multi-lane roads in order to prevent critical situations when pulling out to overtake. When performing an intentional lane change at any speed upwards of 20 km/h, the driver is warned by a visual signal and a steering wheel vibration if another vehicle is hidden in the critical area behind or alongside the BMW X5.

The world-leading Concierge Services are a personal information service, which the BMW ConnectedDrive customer can use to make hotel reservations, search for addresses and telephone numbers or check opening times, to name just a few examples. On vehicles with the optional Navigation system Professional, the Real Time Traffic Information system is also available as an option, supplying drivers with extremely precise real-time traffic information and congestion reports. These options will be available in South Africa from July 2014.

Infotainment: perfect connectivity for office, entertainment and social media applications.

Based either on a comprehensively integrated smartphone or on a built-in SIM card (available in South Africa from July 2014), BMW ConnectedDrive offers access to a wide range of mobility services and web-based services for office, travel and infotainment applications. A hands-free system with USB port is standard specification on the new BMW X5. Also available are the Remote Functions, and in-car Internet access option. The BMW ConnectedDrive Office functions allow emails, appointments, contact lists, calendar entries and notes to be shown on the control display. It also includes a dictating function that converts spoken notes into text, which can then be forwarded as an SMS or email message (available in South Africa from July 2014)

The BMW Apps option includes a web radio function and offers a customised music programme compiled by the Aupeo service, as well as in-car Facebook and Twitter access. New apps are being added to this service all the time.

Extensive standard specification and high-end optional equipment for more driving enjoyment.

The exclusive driving experience in the new BMW X5 is reflected not only in the luxurious interior but also in the extensive standard specification and wide range of high-end optional extras. The standard equipment list now also includes a two-zone automatic climate control system, a Bluetooth hands-free system, an automatically dimming rear-view mirror and cruise control with braking function. The standard-fitted iDrive operating system can be ordered – in conjunction with the optional Navigation system Professional –with a Touch Controller, whose touch-sensitive surface allows the use of characters to program a destination into the navigation system, for example.

The Professional radio is also standard specification. Alternatively, a customised listening experience can be provided by a HiFi loudspeaker system, the Harman Kardon Surround Sound System or the Bang & Olufsen High End Surround Sound System with a 1,200-watt amplifier and 16 speakers. Digital radio (DAB) reception, a TV module and a newly developed rear-seat entertainment system with DVD drive and two tablet-style monitors.

Munich. As of March 2014 a large selection of BMW M Performance parts will be available for all model variants of the Sports Activity Vehicle, giving the new BMW X5 an even more athletic look as it lines up at the start. Its powerful appearance can be further highlighted by means of a black decorative grid for the BMW kidney grille, a front splitter and exterior mirror caps in carbon, air ducting elements, a diffuser insert for the rear apron and side sill foils with M Performance inscription. For individual flair with a sporty touch in the cockpit, there is the BMW M Performance sports steering wheel with red central marking, gear lever with carbon surface, accelerator, brake pedal and driver footrest in high-grade steel and BMW M Performance floor mats. The product range in the suspension area comprises an BMW M Performance brake system with brake calipers finished in blue and 21-inch BMW M Performance light alloy wheels in Bi-Color finish.

The BMW M Performance Power Kit available from spring 2014 for the BMW X5 xDrive35i provides an increase in output which does not affect fuel consumption. A precisely modified engine control system puts peak output up by 15 kW/20 bhp to 240 kW/326 bhp. Maximum torque is likewise raised by 50 Nm to 450 Nm. The spontaneous response of the engine can now be felt even more intensely due to an optimised accelerator pedal set-up. This optimised performance is noticeable both when accelerating from standing and in terms of elasticity, and when the driving experience switch is set to SPORT mode it is accompanied by a striking engine sound  Another option available for the BMW X5 xDrive35i is a BMW M Performance silencer system. All variants of the new BMW X5 can be fitted with M Performance tailpipe trim elements in chrome or carbon.

Munich. All good things come in threes: BMW picked up three titles at the "Auto Trophy 2013" - and did so for the third time in succession. This year's winning trio that impressed readers of the automobile magazine "Auto Zeitung" were the BMW 3 Series, the BMW i3 and the third generation of the BMW X5, all of which attracted the most votes in their respective category. The winners were announced yesterday at a festive award ceremony held at the "Classic Remise" in Düsseldorf. TV presenter Judith Rakers and "Auto Zeitung" editor-in-chief Volker Koerdt presented the three trophies to Dr. Ian Robertson, BMW AG Director of Sales and Marketing, and Dr. Herbert Diess, BMW AG Director of Development.

The BMW 3 Series was able to defend its title from last year, being voted once again by "Auto Zeitung" readers as the most popular mid-range automobile. Now available as a sedan, a Touring and a BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, this latest prize means the model continues its impressive series of prestigious distinctions and comparative test achievements. More than ever before, the BMW 3 Series has come to embody the very essence of driving pleasure, elegant design, comfort and innovative technology in the premium segment of its vehicle category.

The list of winners also featured two new models made by the premium Munich-based automobile manufacturer which were launched on the market just a few days ago. The BMW i3 was quick to assert itself in the "Electric cars" category, while the new BMW X5 won in the category "SUV over 30,000 euros" . Both models had already received distinctions just a few weeks beforehand at the "Golden Steering Wheel 2013" awards presented by "Bild am Sonntag" and "Auto Bild"

The BMW i3 has now also impressed "Auto Zeitung" readers with its revolutionary vehicle concept and visionary design. It is the first ever premium automobile in the world designed entirely to be run on electricity only. Munich. The new BMW X5 is due to arrive in international showrooms on 16 November 2013 and local showrooms in January 2014. The launch of this third generation of the most successful Sports Activity Vehicle in the world will also introduce the BMW M50d M Performance Automobile. Boasting the world’s most powerful six-in-line diesel engine, suspension technology with hallmark M precision-tuning and aerodynamically honed exterior features, the BMW X5 M50d combines superior dynamics on the road with unimpeachable traction off the beaten track. The other character facets of the new BMW X5, moreover, can be explicitly highlighted: model-specific options offered by BMW Individual provide exclusive elegant touches, while new products in the Original BMW Accessories range – likewise specifically designed for the Sports Activity Vehicle – serve to underline its versatility and practicality.

BMW X5 M50d: enthralling dynamics thanks to trademark M precision.
A compelling combination of sportiness, exclusivity and everyday utility distinguishes the new BMW X5 M50d. Its six-cylinder in-line diesel engine boasts detailed refinements and comes with three-stage turbocharging and common rail direct injection. From a 3.0-litre displacement it develops output of 280 kW and a peak torque of 740 Newton metres. BMW BluePerformance technology as standard means the M Performance Automobile is also EU6-compliant. The diesel unit’s power is transferred to the road by an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW xDrive all-wheel drive.

The new BMW X5 M50d comes as standard with Adaptive M suspension including Dynamic Damper Control and air suspension at the rear axle, as well as Electric Power Steering. The optional Dynamic adaptive suspension package comprises Dynamic Performance Control and Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation, while the exterior features standard 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design fitted with mixed tyres. Noticeably enhanced agility and a quicker time of 5.3 seconds for the 0 to 100 km/h sprint go hand in hand with fuel economy improved by more than ten per cent compared with the predecessor model. Average fuel consumption for the new BMW X5 M50d is 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres in the EU test cycle, with CO2 emissions of 177 g/km.

The BMW Individual range specifically created for the new BMW X5 turns an even brighter spotlight on its elegant design, luxurious ambience and exclusive character. Factory-fitted exterior and interior equipment options play their part in imbuing the Sports Activity Vehicle with a highly distinctive charisma. The manufacturing processes behind the BMW Individual products developed for the new BMW X5 are underpinned by precision craftsmanship and longstanding experience in working with choice materials. Original BMW Accessories: tailor-made for greater variability and comfort.
The versatility of the new BMW X5 has also been further enhanced thanks to products from the Original BMW Accessories range that are literally made-to-measure. Floor and luggage compartment mats, along with transport bags whose contours are precisely shaped to fit the interior dimensions of the Sports Activity Vehicle, serve as ideal accessories for everyday use and on longer journeys. The anniversary edition, a sapphire black metallic BMW X5 xDrive35i featuring cinnamon brown Nevada leather trim, came off the assembly line at the American BMW plant in Spartanburg/South Carolina today and is soon to be delivered to a customer in China. Achieving the seven-digit production figure is a further milestone in the success story of the first Sports Activity Vehicle. very significant increase in engine power, the new X5 4.4i consumes six
per cent less fuel than its predecessor in the ECE driving cycle. This
is also made possible, inter alia, by the new six-speed automatic
transmission fitted as standard in the X5 4.4i. Through its perfect
gear increments and intelligent shift logic, the transmission keeps
gearshifts virtually unnoticeable to the driver, who at the same time
always benefits from optimum power and performance reserves. The new
X5 3.0i comes with BMW's new six-speed manual gearbox and xDrive
all-wheel drive. With the output and torque of the three-litre
straight-six power unit remaining unchanged, the X5 3.0i thus offers a
far higher standard of performance on the road, accelerating from 0-100
km/h in just 8.3 seconds and now reaching a top speed of 210 km/h.
Composite fuel consumption, in turn, is a moderate 12.7 litres/100 km.
The successful synthesis of sporting performance and economic benefits
has already made the diesel-engined X5 3.0d one of the most popular
versions of this Sports Activity Vehicle in many markets. Now, to
enhance this popularity to an even higher level, this power unit has
been improved yet again most impressively, the updated straight-six
turbodiesel with second-generation common rail fuel injection now
developing maximum output of 150 kW in the new X5 3.0d. With this new
kind of power, the X5 3.0d accelerates to 100 km/h in just 8.8 seconds
and has a top speed of 210 km/h. And with impressive maximum torque of
480 Nm throughout an extremely wide speed range, this Sports Activity is
absolutely superior also off the beaten track and on steep mountain
roads. In the ECE driving cycle the new X5 3.0d, despite its superior
power, consumes only 8.6 litres of diesel fuel. This new common rail
diesel transmits its huge power to the wheels through six gears with
finely chosen gear increments, coming as standard with BMW's new
six-speed manual gearbox or, as an option, with the new six-speed
automatic transmission. Intelligent use of power: the unique xDrive
all-wheel-drive system as a world-first achievement. The technical
features of the X5 are at least as significant as the outstanding
performance of the new engines, conveying this superior power to the
road smoothly and consistently in all situations. This supremacy both
on- and off-road is ensured by the specially developed intelligent
xDrive all-wheel-drive system setting new standards in the traction and
agility of all-wheel drive vehicles, xDrive ensuring infinitely
variable distribution of drive forces between the front and rear axle
more quickly and efficiently than ever before. The system immediately
recognises the need for a change in power distribution and responds
extremely quickly to any demand of this kind, when driving on-road
usually even before the wheel about to slip has lost its grip on the
road. Action, not reaction: xDrive thinks with the driver and responds
even more quickly. xDrive acts more quickly than other systems, since
it is able to think ahead in every situation. To do so, it not only
uses information from the wheel sensors signalling that the wheels are
spinning, but also data collected by the DSC sensors, the yaw rate and
steering wheel lock sensors, for example, providing important
information on the vehicle's current driving conditions (in the former
case on the rotation of the vehicle around its vertical axis). As a
result, xDrive is able at any point in time to spread out drive power
perfectly between the two axles, thus significantly minimising the risk
of under- or oversteering. In practice this means not only a
significantly higher standard of agility and driving pleasure, but also
a lot more safety, suspension control systems such as DSC only being
required to cut in much later in most situations than with conventional
all-wheel drive. Through its fast response alone, the new system
offers enormous benefits in terms of traction. On rough tracks or
slippery surfaces, xDrive takes only a few milliseconds to respond to
loss of grip by one wheel, redistributing drive power to the other
wheels which have still retained their grip on the surface, the
electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch responding immediately
without losing any time. Setting off on snowbound surfaces or climbing
even the steepest gradients on loose rubble or gravel, therefore, is an
easy exercise in the new X5 thanks to BMW xDrive. Striking design
elements providing an even more distinctive profile. Taking the
outstanding qualities of the new X5, BMW's designers have decided to
turn wonderful looks into perfection. And so, updating the X5's design,
they have given the vehicle even more character, making the outstanding
technical features concealed from the observer's eye within the body
visible to the outside with that understatement so typical of BMW. The
front end of the X5, for example, has been fully revised all the way to
the A-pillar, emphasizing the sculptured shape of the engine
compartment lid characteristic of BMW's X models even more strongly and
bearing out BMW's new design language with interchanging convex and
concave surfaces for an even more dynamic appearance. The character
lines in the engine compartment are even wider and higher than before,
now extending all the way into the double kidney grille so typical of
BMW. The kidney-shaped air intakes have indeed been carefully
redesigned, now becoming larger than before and giving the new X5 even
greater presence. The slats in the kidney grille, again characterising
this BMW Sports Activity Vehicle, come with a robust and
sophisticated-looking wave-shaped profile. On the six-cylinder models
they are finished in black, on the 8-cylinders in titanium colour.
The dual headlights now come with an even more dynamic exterior contour,
forming a perfect match with the more rounded direction indicators to
reflect the new look of BMW's model range. And almost mystic night
design, finally, is ensured by the new, brilliant corona rings around
the four headlights. The front air dam is even more striking in its
design and now comes with larger air scoops split down the middle,
visually extending the character lines of the engine compartment lid to
the rear. The bumper, in turn, merges smoothly into the headlight area,
while at the rear the new tail lights in clear glass look harmoniously
round off the fresh appearance of the new BMW X5. Several new wheels
and new outer colours offer the customer a wide range of
personalisation options, with an equally wide choice of leather options
(including a new top-end Walknappa leather choice) as well as matching
colours and surfaces within the passenger compartment. Coming right
at the top: safety. The new BMW X5 also ranks right at the top in terms
of safety, benefiting from the wide range of improvements and
modifications introduced on the new model. The new xDrive
all-wheel-drive system raises active safety to a new level right from
the start, eliminating the risk of many critical situations to begin
with. And the X5 has only recently confirmed its qualities in terms of
passive safety in one of the toughest crash tests in the world, BMW's
Sports Activity becoming the first "Large Off-roader" in the
world to score the highest number of five stars in the Euro-NCAP test.
Numerous new and proven equipment features also contribute to superior
driving safety in the X5. As an example, new Adaptive Headlights
available as an option ensure optimum illumination of the road ahead in
all kinds of bends. This "intelligent" system uses the wide
range of data collected by the chassis and suspension control units in
order to guide the swivelling headlights in good time along the course
of the road. New bi-xenon headlights, in turn, ensure particularly
good and bright illumination, coming as standard on the 8-cylinder
models and optionally available on the six-cylinders. The enthusiast
using the superior power and performance of the new X5 to tow a trailer
will also benefit from another unique safety feature: the trailer
stability control offered on the new model. This control system prevents
the trailer from building up an increasing pendulum motion by
recognising dangerous movements of this kind with the help of the DSC
sensors and by intervening in the brakes, automatically reinstating a
safe and stable driving condition.

Rosslyn. Just a few months after the debut of the revised BMW X5, the
new top model of the bestselling range is going on the market: the BMW
X5 4.8iS has a unique power unit under the bonnet. The new 8-cylinder
was developed especially and exclusively for the Sports Activity
Vehicle (SAV) and delivers 265 kW at 6200 rpm. It rounds off the top of
the X5 range, consisting up to now of a 3-litre in-line 6-cylinder
diesel and petrol engine model and the 4.4 litre 8-cylinder. For the
connoisseur, the X5 4.8iS is immediately recognisable as the top
version of the BMW X5 series. Both the front and rear apron are
aerodynamically adapted and bear sporty design elements. The other
exclusive features are oval dual exhaust tailpipes and 20-inch
aluminium wheels with 275/40 W tyres at front and 315/35 W at rear.
Developed for maximum performance capacity: engine and brakes. The
heart of the new BMW X5 4.8iS is the very powerful 8-cylinder power unit
which puts a rated torque of 500 Nm on the crankshaft at 3500 rpm. The
basis for this development was the BMW V8 engine with VALVETRONIC valve
control, bi-vanos and fully variable intake system as used in the 7
Series, 6 Series and 5 Series. From this, the BMW engineers developed a
high-performance engine exclusively for the X5 with a larger cylinder
bore and new crankshaft with enlarged stroke. In order to provide
adequate gas exchange for the 4.8 litres capacity thus created, the
intake and exhaust system have been extensively modified and the engine
management system adapted. Fitted as standard with a modified 6-speed
automatic transmission, this power package gives the X5 4.8iS
performance figures similar to those of a sports car: the SAV flagship
accelerates in 6.1 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h and achieves a top speed
of 246 km/h. This kind of dynamic performance also places high demands
on the brake system. New, larger high-performance brake discs with 356
mm diameter at front and 324 mm at rear, both inner vented of course,
ensure safe deceleration from all speeds. As standard: dual axle
pneumatic suspension with self-levelling. With its sporty suspension
settings, the X5 4.8iS is already 15 mm lower than the other X5
variations as standard. This can particularly be noticed when the car
is driven in a sporty style due to its lower centre of gravity, the
reduced tendency to tilt on bends and the diminished brake squat,
resulting in excellent handling. In addition, the top model is fitted
as standard with dual axle pneumatic self-levelling suspension. This
system enables the driver to lower the X5 by an additional 20 mm or
else increase ground clearance by 40 mm when driving off-road.
Intelligent power: the all-wheel system xDrive. Just as important as
the impressive performance of the new engine is the drive technology
which is put on the road in optimum fashion in every situation. This is
ensured by the intelligent all-wheel drive system xDrive which sets new
standards in traction and agility amongst all-wheel drive vehicles.
xDrive enables the continuously variable and uniquely fast distribution
of drive forces between the front and rear axle. Together with the new
engines, xDrive is the technological highlight of the X5 revisions. The
system immediately identifies when a change of power distribution is
necessary and reacts extremely rapidly - in on-road mode usually even
before a wheel loses grip. Action rather than reaction: xDrive thinks
and acts faster. xDrive acts faster than other systems since it is
always able to "think ahead". To this end, it not only uses
the information from the wheel sensors which indicate imminent wheel
spin, but also the data collected by the sensors of the stabilisation
system DSC. For example, the yaw rate - information on vehicle rotation
movement - and the steering wheel angle provide important data on the
current driving condition. xDrive can thus provide optimum distribution
of drive force between the two axles at any time when taking bends
dynamically and thus significantly minimise understeering or
oversteering. In addition to a tangible increase in agility and driving
pleasure, xDrive also provides a considerable safety bonus. Chassis
regulation systems such as DSC often do not have to intervene until
much later than is the case with conventional all-wheel drive concepts.
With its speed of response, the new system offers enormous traction
benefits. On unsecured or slippery surfaces, only a few milliseconds
pass between the loss of grip in a wheel and the redistribution of
drive force to the wheels which still have grip. The electronically
controlled multi-plate clutch loses no time and reacts immediately.
With xDrive, starting on snow or climbing steep slopes with a loose
surface are thus easy exercises for an X5. Striking design elements
sharpen the profile. The discreet visual differentiation features of
the X5 4.8iS harmoniously highlight the revised design of the new X5.
For example, the front has been completely reworked up to the A column.
Here, the bonnet relief characteristic of the BMW X models has been
more strikingly emphasised, showing the greater dynamism of the new BMW
design style with alternating convex-concave surfaces. The
characteristic lines of the engine compartment lid now run broader and
higher into the characteristic BMW dual kidney grill. The kidney-shaped
intake vents have also been newly designed. They are now larger and
give the new X5 a greater presence. The kidney rods have a robust yet
elegant wave-like profile characteristic for the BMW Sports Activity
Vehicle. The dual headlamps in bi-xenon technology have been given a
more dynamic exterior contour and with the equally more strongly
rounded direction indicators are matched to the new appearance of the
BMW model range. A characteristic nocturnal appearance has been
achieved by the designers by means of the illuminated corona rings
around the four headlamps. The front apron has a more striking design
with larger air intake vents separated at the centre, creating the a
visual extension of the characteristic bonnet lines. The bumpers now
connect seamlessly with the headlamps. At the rear, the new rear lights
round off the fresh appearance of the new BMW X5 harmoniously in clear
glass visual style. Extensive equipment, exclusive paint finishes and
materials. The BMW X5 4.8iS is available in five paint finishes, two of
these - Imola Red and Le Mans Blue - are reserved exclusively for the
top model. The exterior is in Shadowline high gloss as standard. In the
interior, too, BMW X5 4.8iS provides new highlights: the standard sport
seats or optional comfort seats can be chosen in exclusive Crème
Beige, also only available for the high performance 8-cylinder model

New engines: more power, more driving pleasure, more economy. Together
with its update, the X5 is re-entering the market with no less than
three new engines: A new 4.4-litre V8 petrol unit, the new 3.0-litre
common rail diesel, and the new top-of-the-range 4.8-litre V8
high-performance engine. In its performance on- and offroad, the X5
3.0i furthermore benefits from the new six-speed manual gearbox and the
xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The new BMW 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine
with VALVETRONIC valve control, bi-VANOS and fully variable intake
manifold has already set the standard in terms of performance and
motoring refinement in the new BMW 7 Series. Now this engine, modified
to meet the requirements of a Sports Activity Vehicle, is presenting
its benefits also in the X5 4.4i. Developing maximum output of 235 kW,
the 4.4-litre V8 accelerates this outstanding model to 100 km/h in just
7.0 seconds. Top speed, in turn, is 240 km/h, provided the vehicle is
fitted with V-rated high-speed tyres standard in Germany. Fitted with
H-rated tyres, in turn, top speed is limited electronically to 210
km/h. The new V8 also offers an even higher standard of economy in every
respect: Despite the very significant increase in engine power, the new
X5 4.4i consumes six per cent less fuel than its predecessor in the ECE
driving cycle. This is also made possible, inter alia, by the new
six-speed automatic transmission fitted as standard in the X5 4.4i.
Through its perfect gear increments and intelligent shift logic, the
transmission keeps gearshifts virtually unnoticeable to the driver, who
at the same time always benefits from optimum power and performance
reserves. The new X5 3.0i comes with BMW's new six-speed manual gearbox
and xDrive all-wheel drive. With the output and torque of the
three-litre straight-six power unit remaining unchanged, the X5 3.0i
thus offers a far higher standard of performance on the road,
accelerating from 0 to100 km/h in just 8.3 seconds and now reaching a
top speed of 210 km/h. Composite fuel consumption, in turn, is a
moderate 12.7 litres/100 km. The successful synthesis of sporting
performance and economic benefits has already made the diesel-engined
X5 3.0d one of the most popular versions of this Sports Activity
Vehicle in many markets. Now, to enhance this popularity to an even
higher level, this power unit has been improved yet again most
impressively, the updated straight-six turbodiesel with
second-generation common rail fuel injection now developing maximum
output of 160 kW in the new X5 3.0d. With this new kind of power, the
X5 3.0d accelerates to 100 km/h in just 8.3 seconds and has a top speed
of 210 km/h. And with impressive maximum torque of 500 Nm throughout an
extremely wide speed range, this Sports Activity is absolutely superior
also off the beaten track and on steep mountain roads. In the ECE
driving cycle the new X5 3.0d, despite its superior power, consumes
only 8.6 litres of diesel fuel. This new common rail diesel transmits
its huge power to the wheels through six gears with finely chosen gear
increments, coming as standard with BMW's new six-speed manual gearbox
or, as an option, with the new six-speed automatic transmission. X5
4.8is - the new top model setting an entirely new benchmark in sports
motoring. The new X5 4.8is is the top-of-the-range model within the
revised X5 family. Starting in spring 2004, this high-performance
version of BMW's Sports Activity will be following in the footsteps of
the other three models, the V8 high-performance power unit receiving a
lot more power, with maximum output upon introduction of this new
vehicle of approximately 265 kW accelerating the X5 4.8is to 100 km/h
in a staggeringly quick time of only about six seconds. Top speed of
this new high-performance model will presumably be 246 km/h. The 'heart'
of this development is of course the new BMW V8 power unit featuring
VALVETRONIC valve management, bi-VANOS, and a fully variable intake
manifold. This high-performance engine developed exclusively for the X5
has been increased in capacity to 4.8 litres and features a wide range
of modifications on the intake and exhaust system as well as the engine
management itself. As in the past, the new top-of-the-range X5 4.8is
comes exclusively with the 'is' abbreviation proving that this X5 is
the absolute leader not only in terms of engine output and capacity,
but also through its very special equipment, exclusive colours and
materials, as well as discreet, sporting design features setting this
model aside from the other versions of the X5. One example is the front
air dam of the X5 4.8is - completely new in design and contributing to
the unmistakable, sporting character of this very special model.
Intelligent use of power: the unique xDrive all-wheel-drive system as a
world-first achievement. The technical features of the X5 are at least
as significant as the outstanding performance of the new engines,
conveying this superior power to the road smoothly and consistently in
all situations. This supremacy both on- and offroad is ensured by the
specially developed intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system setting
new standards in the traction and agility of all-wheel drive vehicles,
xDrive ensuring infinitely variable distribution of drive forces
between the front and rear axle more quickly and efficiently than ever
before. The system immediately recognises the need for a change in power
distribution and responds extremely quickly to any demand of this kind,
when driving onroad usually even before the wheel about to slip has
lost its grip on the road. Action, not reaction: xDrive thinks with
the driver and responds even more quickly. xDrive acts more quickly than
other systems, since it is able to think ahead in every situation. To
do so, it not only uses information from the wheel sensors signalling
that the wheels are spinning, but also data collected by the DSC
sensors, the yaw rate and steering wheel lock sensors, for example,
providing important information on the vehicle's current driving
conditions (in the former case on the rotation of the vehicle around
its vertical axis). As a result, xDrive is able at any point in time to
spread out drive power perfectly between the two axles, thus
significantly minimising the risk of under- or oversteering. In
practice this means not only a significantly higher standard of agility
and driving pleasure, but also a lot more safety, suspension control
systems such as DSC only being required to cut in much later in most
situations than with conventional all-wheel drive. Through its fast
response alone, the new system offers enormous benefits in terms of
traction. On rough tracks or slippery surfaces, xDrive takes only a few
milliseconds to respond to loss of grip by one wheel, redistributing
drive power to the other wheels which have still retained their grip on
the surface, the electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch
responding immediately without losing any time. Setting off on
snowbound surfaces or climbing even the steepest gradients on loose
rubble or gravel, therefore, is an easy exercise in the new X5 thanks
to BMW xDrive. Striking design elements providing an even more
distinctive profile. Taking the outstanding qualities of the new X5,
BMW's designers have decided to turn wonderful looks into perfection.
And so, updating the X5's design, they have given the vehicle even more
character, making the outstanding technical features concealed from the
observer's eye within the body visible to the outside with that
understatement so typical of BMW. The front end of the X5, for example,
has been fully revised all the way to the A-pillar, emphasizing the
sculptured shape of the engine compartment lid characteristic of BMW's
X models even more strongly and bearing out BMW's new design language
with interchanging convex and concave surfaces for an even more dynamic
appearance. The character lines in the engine compartment are even
wider and higher than before, now extending all the way into the double
kidney grille so typical of BMW. The kidney-shaped air intakes have
indeed been carefully redesigned, now becoming larger than before and
giving the new X5 even greater presence. The slats in the kidney grille,
again characterising this BMW Sports Activity Vehicle, come with a
robust and sophisticated-looking wave-shaped profile. On the
six-cylinder models they are finished in black, on the 8-cylinders in
titanium colour. The dual headlights now come with an even more dynamic
exterior contour, forming a perfect match with the more rounded
direction indicators to reflect the new look of BMW's model range. And
almost mystic night design, finally, is ensured by the new, brilliant
corona rings around the four headlights. The front air dam is even
more striking in its design and now comes with larger air scoops split
down the middle, visually extending the character lines of the engine
compartment lid to the rear. The bumper, in turn, merges smoothly into
the headlight area, while at the rear the new tail lights in clear glass
look harmoniously round off the fresh appearance of the new BMW X5.
Several new wheels and new outer colours offer the customer a wide range
of personalisation options, with an equally wide choice of new leather
and fabric upholstery as well as matching colours and surfaces within
the passenger compartment. Coming right at the top: safety. The new
BMW X5 also ranks right at the top in terms of safety, benefitting from
the wide range of improvements and modifications introduced on the new
model. The new xDrive all-wheel-drive system raises active safety to a
new level right from the start, eliminating the risk of many critical
situations to begin with. And the X5 has only recently confirmed its
qualities in terms of passive safety in one of the toughest crash tests
in the world, BMW's Sports Activity becoming the first 'Large
Offroader' in the world to score the highest number of five stars in
the Euro-NCAP test. Numerous new and proven equipment features also
contribute to superior driving safety in the X5. As an example, new
Adaptive Headlights available as an option ensure optimum illumination
of the road ahead in all kinds of bends (available overseas from spring
2004). This 'intelligent' system uses the wide range of data collected
by the chassis and suspension control units in order to guide the
swivelling headlights in good time along the course of the road. New
bi-xenon headlights, in turn, ensure particularly good and bright
illumination, coming as standard on the 8-cylinder models and optionally
available on the six-cylinders. The enthusiast using the superior power
and performance of the new X5 to tow a trailer will also benefit from
another unique safety feature: the trailer stability control offered on
the new model. This control system prevents the trailer from building
up an increasing pendulum motion by recognising dangerous movements of
this kind with the help of the DSC sensors and by intervening in the
brakes, automatically reinstating a safe and stable driving condition.
Yet another important safety feature is the adaptive Brake Force Display
'telling' motorists following from behind how hard you are applying the
brakes through the growing area covered by the brake lights as a
function of brake intensity. As a result of homologation and
legislation requirements, this safety feature is currently only
available in North America, where it is standard in the new BMW X5.
