Midrand . BMW South Africa proudly announces the introduction of the BMW X3 20 Pure Design, the new entry point to the local BMW X3 line-up.

Complementing the existing BMW X3 20d, BMW X3 30e and BMW X3 M50 xDrive offerings, the Rosslyn-built BMW X3 20 Pure Design showcases the mid-sized Sports Activity Vehicle’s (SAV) now-signature monolithic design paired with a cutting-edge four-cylinder petrol engine.

Positioned alongside the highly sought-after 20d variant, the 2.0-litre petrol engine (aided by 48V mild-hybrid technology) produces 148kW between 4,400 and 6,500 rpm, and 335Nm of torque from 1,500 – 4,000 rpm. The top speed is rated at 218km/h, and the average fuel consumption is 7.5 l/100km.

With a starting price of R1,107,760.40 (incl. VAT and CO₂ tax), the BMW X3 20 Pure Design is meticulously specified to deliver luxury, practicality and performance to the value-conscious customer. Building on the BMW X3 xLine specification, standard features include the BMW Iconic Glow kidney grille, 19-inch wheels with run-flat tyres, electric seats, comfort access, LED headlights, a panorama glass roof, and aluminium satin-finished accents that enhance the SAV’s confident presence.

Inside, drivers and passengers are greeted by a wraparound cabin design with electrically adjustable sport seats, black or espresso brown Veganza synthetic leather, and ambient interior lighting from the BMW Interaction Bar. Comfort, connectivity and confidence are guaranteed on every trip thanks to the curved touchscreen running BMW Operating System 9, wireless charging, Harman/Kardon surround sound, and driver assistance technologies such as Park Assist and Driving Assist. Now in its 39th year, the South African Car of the Year Awards are hosted by the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists (SAGMJ) and sponsored by Old Mutual Insure. The awards recognise vehicles that set new benchmarks across key segments, with additional honours including the Jurors’ Choice Award and the Motor Enthusiast’s Choice.

Local hero

Produced at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn since October 2024, the BMW X3 continues to play a strategic role in both local and global markets. Rosslyn, Pretoria. BMW Group South Africa hosted media this week at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn for the national media launch of the new BMW X3. The event, which will have a second media rotation from 19–20 February, provided a firsthand look at the state-of-the-art facility, the production process, and the plant’s significant local footprint.

Since its start of production in October 2024, the new BMW X3 has strongly resonated with South African customers, with all available stock sold or on order. Impressively, approximately 10% of sales are for the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) BMW X3 30e xDrive model, underscoring growing interest in electrified vehicles and reinforcing BMW’s leadership in the ‘New Energy Vehicles’ segment. The BMW X3 30e xDrive has driven a remarkable 45% increase in the monthly retail rate of PHEVs, demonstrating its significant market impact.

These achievements coincide with BMW Group Plant Rosslyn’s reintroduction of a third production shift and expansion of its production line to include internal combustion engine (ICE) variants. “The new BMW X3 embodies our commitment to both innovation and customer choice,” said Ernst Kohlmeyer, General Manager of Quality at BMW Group South Africa. “Producing both PHEV and ICE models on the same line demonstrates the flexibility and adaptability of Plant Rosslyn, enabling us to effectively respond to global market demands.”

Driven by worldwide demand, the new BMW X3 plays a crucial role in the BMW Group’s strategic electrification roadmap. Its production launch is timely, showcasing BMW Group Plant Rosslyn’s capabilities and commitment to delivering on allocated volume and quality in a three-shift operation, reintroduced on 8 January 2025, to meet growing demand. The plant is projected to produce an average of 110 units per shift.

“These production milestones represent the culmination of years of planning and investment in Plant Rosslyn,” added Anuk Maharaj, Project Lead for the new BMW X3 at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn. “We are immensely proud to see the new BMW X3 come to life here, securing jobs and contributing to the South African economy.”

In addition to the previously launched BMW X3 30e xDrive, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn will now also produce the BMW X3 20 petrol and 20d diesel variants, (started in January 2025), followed by the BMW X3 40d xDrive in May 2025. Significantly, both the BMW X3 30e xDrive and the BMW X3 40d xDrive will be exclusively produced at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn for global markets. This strategic move reinforces the BMW Group’s ‘technology openness’ philosophy, offering customers powertrain options that best suit their individual needs.

This expansion follows a R4.2 billion investment in the electrification and digitisation of the production facility, demonstrating the BMW Group’s commitment to transformation, skills development, and future-proofing the Rosslyn plant within its global production network. A comprehensive plant-wide training programme ensured the workforce was fully prepared for the new model’s production.

The production of the BMW X3, including PHEV and ICE variants, secures jobs not only at BMW Group South Africa but also within its supply chain and retail network across the country. This new development reaffirms the BMW Group’s confidence in BMW Group Plant Rosslyn and its employees, positioning the plant for continued success in the evolving automotive landscape.

Boasting greater sporting appeal, visual impact and versatility than ever, the new BMW X3 assumes the mantle of talented all-rounder for everyday use, leisure activities and trips away in the brand’s core segment. A new design language gives the fourth generation of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) for the premium midsize segment much enhanced exterior presence and an aura of dynamic grace. Rosslyn. BMW Group South Africa hails the end of an era as BMW Group Plant Rosslyn ended production of the third-generation BMW X3. On 28 August, the last vehicle of this model was produced, totalling the number of BMW X3 cars built to 403,114 units. This historic moment was celebrated by the organisation’s members of management and employees. The last vehicle – a now memorable Carbon Black BMW X3 – will be shipped to a customer in Germany.

At the heart of BMW Group South Africa’s operations since 1973, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn is a cornerstone of its global production network of more than 30 sites in 15 countries. It was the first plant established outside of Germany, building more than 1.7 million cars since its inception. In a key move, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn produced the BMW 3 Series for 35 years until 2018, manufacturing more than 1 million units, and increasing production with each model.

The culmination of 6 years of hard work.

In 2015, the BMW Group announced a R6 billion investment into South Africa by preparing BMW Group Plant Rosslyn for the production of the BMW X3 in 2018. The investment upgraded the facility into one of the most modern in the world, and placed it in line with the efficiency, sustainability and flexibility of BMW Group plants across globally.

BMW Group Plant Rosslyn has been producing the BMW X3 in a three-shift operation for South Africa and more than 50 African and global markets. Approximately 96% of the units produced at the plant are destined for export. With a planned maximum capacity of 76,000 units of the BMW X3, and additional investments, the plant can flexibly match volumes to demand and build more cars.

Since the start of local BMW X3 production in 2018, BMW Group South Africa has claimed segment leadership as the top-selling premium car brand in South Africa. There is steady growth in the popularity of the BMW X models, and the BMW X3 has become one the brand’s best-selling models. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn has proven itself to be an essential member of the BMW Group production network, consistently improving quality and productivity, and fashioning success.

General Manager of Assembly at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, Tshepo Khoza commented, “Having worked closely with the third-generation BMW X3, the last of its kind rolling off the production line was a particularly sentimental moment. As one chapter ends, another begins.

In 2023, BMW Group South Africa announced R4.2 billion in investment to equip its Rosslyn plant to build the next-generation BMW X3 plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV). The investment is in line with BMW’s iFACTORY master plan for future production, marking a significant next-step in advancing the development of efficient, digitalised and resource-friendly production.

The new BMW X3 will be built at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg and Plant Rosslyn using a production process that prioritises the conservation of resources and circularity. Production will begin with the PHEV model, exclusively manufactured in Rosslyn for the world.

As of October 2024, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn will build the fourth-generation BMW X3, continuing the success story of the production of this model in South Africa, and securing the future of the plant for the next 50 years. This decision further ensures the livelihoods of more than 20,000 people directly and indirectly employed at BMW Group South Africa’s facilities and within its supply chain. More recently, plant employees have been trained for new tasks in a qualification programme for electromobility.

Munich. The new BMW X3 is sportier and more versatile than ever as an all-rounder for everyday use, leisure and travel. In its fourth model generation, a new design language gives it a significantly enhanced presence. The M Sport Package and the M Sport Package Pro are available ex works for an even more elegant and sporty appearance. In addition, the distinctive profile of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) can be further customised with the BMW M Performance Parts, which will be available for the new BMW X3.

The model-specific retrofit products for the new BMW X3 are manufactured in a complex process from carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), high-strength aramid or high-gloss polyurethane and are perfectly matched to one another. All add-on parts from the original BMW accessories range perfectly match the geometry and monolithic appearance of the new BMW X3.

Confident appearance and optimised aerodynamic properties: M Performance front splitter.

The exterior components, which are precisely tailored to the new BMW X3, not only set individual accents of elegant sportiness, but also fulfil functional requirements in terms of lightweight construction and aerodynamics. In the fourth model generation, an M Performance front splitter is now available for the first time for the SAV. It complements the exterior features of the M Sport Package and emphasises the striking lines of the front apron. Finished in high-gloss black, the three-part front splitter gives the SAV a decidedly distinctive appearance, especially when combined with the M Performance front ornamental grille painted in the same colour.

The exclusive M Performance side decals in Frozen Black also emphasise the sporty character of the new BMW X3 from the side. The light-, weather- and wash-resistant decal set is perfectly adapted to the vehicle's geometry and makes a clear reference to motorsport. The M Performance Carbon fuel filler cap with M Performance lettering on brushed aluminium makes an unmistakable statement at the fuel station.

The striking M Carbon exterior mirror caps and the M Performance aerial cover in aramid are further accents that lend the profile of the new BMW X3 an individual and sporty touch. The aramid-reinforced plastic is very similar to carbon fibre, but offers greater electromagnetic permeability, ensuring unrestricted reception when making calls and using the many digital services available.

Striking sportiness: M Performance rear diffuser, M Performance roof edge spoiler and M Performance tailpipe trims.

The M Performance rear diffuser is also made from this high-tech material. It gives an even more striking appearance to the rear of the car, which is already characterised by its generous surfaces, and, in conjunction with the Comfort Access system, allows the luggage compartment lid to be opened and closed without the need for physical contact. An optional M Performance rear diffuser in high-gloss black polyurethane is also available for the new BMW X3. Both versions of the rear diffuser are combined with the M Performance rear bumper trim in high-gloss black.

The M Performance roof edge spoiler is also made of polyurethane and is finished in high-gloss black. Perfectly tailored to the design of the vehicle, it not only optimises the aerodynamic properties of the new BMW X3, but also adds a particularly dynamic touch to the rear of the vehicle. If desired, it can be painted in the colour of the vehicle.

The M Performance Carbon tailpipe trims integrated into the rear apron, which are available exclusively for the M Performance model BMW X3 M50 xDrive, give the SAV an especially powerful look. They were specially designed for the two pairs of tailpipes, which unmistakably identify the new BMW X3 M50 xDrive as the most powerful model in the series and bear an embossed M logo. Their CFRP coating, stainless steel inner tailpipes and thermal decoupling of the tailpipe are a testament to the highest quality standards.

The M model badge "X3" in high-gloss black on the rear of the new BMW X3 also sets an exclusive visual accent. The M model badge "M50" is also available in a high-gloss black finish for the M Performance model.

Up to 22-inch light alloy wheels are available for an even more exclusive look.

A further highlight in the range of accessories for the new BMW X3 are the weight-optimised 22-inch M Performance light-alloy wheels. The wheel set is available exclusively in Bicolour Jetblack matt finish. The Y-spoke light alloy wheels feature polished elements on the outer rim and centre for a particularly exclusive look.

In addition, 20-inch M Performance Y-spoke wheels in Jet Black Matt are available. Additional wheel sets are ideally stowed in the M Performance tyre bags. Reinforced bag handles make it easy to transport the wheels.

Precisely honed racing flair also for the interior.

As soon as the doors are opened, the M Performance Carbon door sills unmistakably signal the new BMW X3's dynamic orientation. Authentic motorsport flair can also be found in the footwell of the new BMW X3 with the stainless steel M Performance pedal cover. The M Performance floor mats are the ideal complement. New design language shines the spotlight on distinctive proportions.

A new design language for the exterior helps to give the fourth generation of the BMW X3 an almost monolithic overall appearance with distinctive BMW X model proportions. Generously proportioned surfaces combine with just a few, crisply defined lines to produce a clearly structured exterior that has been reduced to the essentials. The new BMW X3 is 34 millimetres longer than its predecessor at 4,755 millimetres, while width has increased by 29 millimetres to 1,920 millimetres. Together with the 25‑millimetre drop in vehicle height to 1,660 millimetres and the wider tracks, this produces a very powerful and sporty look.

The large BMW kidney grille in the upright front end of the new BMW X3 gives off an air of assured presence. A new structure for the grille interior, comprising vertically and diagonally arranged bars, adds a fresh touch. The optional BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting forms a continuous line around each element of the grille. The daytime driving lights, side lights and turn signal indicators in the LED headlights are now all produced by L-shaped, overlapping light sources. Adaptive LED Headlights with non-dazzling matrix high beam, urban light and cornering light functions, plus blue design detailing are standard.

Bold side skirts and a roofline extending deep into the rear end are the distinguishing features of the new model’s sporty silhouette. The prominently flared wheel arches create the impression of considerable width at the rear. The flush-mounted rear window is bordered by a long roof spoiler and the adjoining side air deflectors. All model variants aside from the BMW X3 M50 xDrive come with exhaust tailpipes integrated out of sight in the rear apron. The fresh interpretation of the characteristic T-shaped graphic and a satinated horizontal bar with integral turn signal indicators help to give the rear lights a very modern appearance.

There is a choice of one solid and eight metallic shades for the exterior paintwork of the new BMW X3, including the new Dune Grey metallic finish. Models produced at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg will additionally be available with BMW Individual paint finishes, including two matt shimmering Frozen options, as well as over 15 BMW Individual special paint finishes.

The new BMW X3 is equipped as standard with light-alloy wheels measuring 19 inches in size for the BMW X3 20d and 30e xDrive models, and 20 inches for the BMW X3 M50 xDrive M Performance model. A selection of 20- and 21-inch items are also available as factory-fitted options. The optional M Sport package creates an exceptionally dynamic look with features such as 19-inch M light-alloy wheels and bespoke design cues for optimising airflow and aerodynamic balance. The M Sport package Pro builds on this content by adding, among other things, the Iconic Glow contour lighting and M Sport brakes with red-painted callipers.

Sporty premium ambience and generous amounts of space.

The cabin of the new BMW X3 blends robust SAV functionality with ample spaciousness and a premium ambience full of individual style. The BMW Curved Display, BMW Interaction Bar, steering wheels with a flat-bottomed rim and the new-look gear selector lever are the defining elements of the cockpit’s modern take on hallmark BMW driver-focused design. Other model-specific highlights include light elements in a contrasting colour in the centre console and door trims. This new design feature is located towards the front of the driver’s and front passenger doors, where it forms a border around function buttons, ventilation controllers, air vents and the robust door openers typically found on BMW X models.

The interior’s individual ambience goes hand in hand with generous amounts of space and modern versatility. Load space can be increased from 570 to a maximum 1,700 litres (BMW X3 30e xDrive: 460 – 1,600 litres). A trailer coupling that extends and retracts again electrically can be specified as an option. The maximum permitted trailer load is 2,500 kilograms, depending on the model variant.

The new BMW X3 is fitted as standard with newly designed electrically adjustable and heated sport seats upholstered in Econeer, with surfaces and cushioning made from secondary material. Veganza and BMW Individual Merino leather upholsteries are both available as an option; Veganza at no additional cost. Making its debut for a BMW model is the optional Luxury instrument panel made from recycled polyester with a high-class knitted texture.

Plug-in hybrid with significantly longer electric range.

The drive system in the BMW X3 30e xDrive plug-in hybrid is made up of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine partnered with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. These join forces to generate system output of up to 220 kW.

Helped by latest-generation BMW eDrive technology and adaptive recuperation, the new BMW X3 30e xDrive achieves an electric range of 81 – 90 kilometres in the WLTP cycle. Its Combined Charging Unit enables AC charging at 11 kW as standard. The plug-in-hybrid model also comes prepared for smart charging with the Connected Home Charging option.

BMW X3 M50 xDrive with standout performance qualities.

The range-topping model, the new BMW X3 M50 xDrive, features the most powerful six-cylinder in-line petrol engine yet fitted in an M Performance model. The 3.0-litre M TwinPower Turbo unit links up with 48V mild hybrid technology. Its maximum output of 293 kW is channelled to the road via an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. The BMW X3 M50 xDrive powers to 100 km/h from rest in 4.6 seconds.

This stunningly potent powertrain combines with the bespoke chassis technology to deliver a compelling blend of agility, dynamism and handling precision. M Sport suspension with variable sport steering, M Sport brakes, 20-inch M light-alloy wheels and an M Sport differential integrated into the rear axle all come as standard, along with adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers. M-specific design features, the M kidney grille with horizontal bars and BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting, and the quartet of exhaust tailpipes all serve to underline the status of the BMW M model as the most powerful version of the new BMW X3.

Systematic electrification for petrol and diesel engines, eight-speed Steptronic transmission and BMW xDrive all-wheel drive as standard.

48V mild hybrid technology also endows the BMW X3 20d xDrive and the BMW X3 M50 xDrive with enhanced efficiency and rapid power delivery. 

The four-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 2.0 litres in the new BMW X3 20d xDrive posts a maximum output of 145 kW. The diesel model completes the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 7.7 seconds. 

All the power units link up with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission including shift paddles on the steering wheel as standard. There is also a Sport Boost function for exceptionally rapid bursts of speed in models specified with the M Sport package and in the new BMW X3 M50 xDrive. All model variants also benefit from fully variable distribution of drive power via the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system as standard.

Agility and ride comfort up their game.

All model variants of the new BMW X3 boast driving qualities offering a clearly noticeable increase in agility, cornering stability and long-distance comfort over the outgoing model. A body with lower weight but increased rigidity and the wider rear track both play a role here, as do the high-quality chassis components and control systems tuned for this specific model. Modifications to the kinematic and elastokinematic properties of the double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle have increased precision when turning into corners, while the 19 per cent increase in the caster offset of the steering axle is a boon for straight-line stability. Near-actuator wheel slip limitation and the integrated braking system likewise form part of the standard package of chassis technology.

Customers looking for even more dynamic prowess can choose the optional M Sport suspension including sport steering and M Sport brakes (both standard for the new BMW X3 M50 xDrive). Adaptive suspension – also to be found on the options list – sharpens the agility of the new BMW X3 at the same time as increasing ride comfort.

Driving Assistant and Parking Assistant as standard.

The new BMW X3 offers a far more extensive range of standard and optional systems for semi-automated driving and parking. It is equipped as standard with front collision warning, Lane Departure Warning and Speed Limit Info, along with the Driving Assistant including Lane Change Warning and manual Speed Limit Assist. The Parking Assistant (also standard) incorporates features such as the Reversing Assistant and a Reversing Assist Camera.

Among the highlights on the list of optional systems are the Steering and Lane Control Assistant, as well as automatic Speed Limit Assist and route speed control when using Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function. The optional Parking Assistant Professional allows parking and general manoeuvres to be controlled from outside the car using a smartphone.

More generous standard specification for greater comfort and driving pleasure.

Besides the extra assistance systems, the far more generous standard specification compared to the outgoing model offers a wealth of other features that help boost comfort and driving pleasure in the new BMW X3. These include three-zone automatic climate control, acoustic glazing, Comfort Access, automatic tailgate operation, an electric folding mechanism for the exterior mirrors, an alarm system and BMW Live Cockpit Plus complete with the cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system. The new BMW X3 also comes as standard with ambient lighting featuring a Welcome and Goodbye Animation, a tray including wireless charging function for compatible smartphones, a Bluetooth interface, four USB-C ports, a 12V power socket in the centre console and another in the luggage compartment.

The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional adds not only the BMW Head-Up Display, but also the Augmented View function in the control display. Also to be found on the options list are a fixed panoramic glass sunroof featuring a large transparent surface without any cross struts to break it up, steering wheel heating, sun protection glass in the rear and a pre-heating function. The new BMW X3 30e xDrive, meanwhile, comes with the BMW IconicSounds Electric as standard for special sound effects.

BMW Operating System 9, BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Digital Premium.

The new BMW X3 comes with the latest version of BMW iDrive with QuickSelect to provide intuitive, easy control. Its new home screen shows vertically arranged function icons on the same level. The QuickSelect feature allows functions to be activated directly without having to enter a submenu. The new BMW iDrive is geared squarely to touch and voice control. It is based on BMW Operating System 9, which also paves the way for a customisable selection of additional digital services. These can be made available over the air, both via the BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades facility and thanks to an ever-expanding variety of third-party apps offered as part of the optional BMW Digital Premium package.

BMW Digital Premium allows in-car use of the specific apps available in each country on a subscription basis. Besides music streaming, the range of in-car gaming with the AirConsole game platform also includes the popular quiz “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”. BMW Digital Premium additionally covers the necessary data usage for the featured digital services. This option also expands the functions of the navigation system and the selection of both My Modes and lighting effects for the Welcome and Goodbye Animation.

Smartphone integration using Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ is available as standard. The BMW ID and My BMW App make it easy to personalise the user experience in the new BMW X3. There is also the option of using the My BMW App to set up the BMW Digital Key Plus with ultra-wideband radio technology for compatible smartphones running iOS or Android or for an Apple Watch.

Midrand. Fifty years ago, in March 1973, a key automotive, economic, and societal player in South Africa was founded: The newly established plant of BMW South Africa started to produce the first BMW vehicles, laying the foundation for a South African icon. Located in Rosslyn, outside the capital city of Pretoria, this was the first BMW production site outside of Germany. Few would have imagined the critical role the subsidiary on the tip of Africa would ultimately play in developing products – and nurturing talent – for the Bavarian manufacturer.

Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of BMW AG for Production and Chairman of the Board of Management, BMW Group South Africa, said: “As the first plant outside Germany, the emotional link to South Africa is very strong. It was our first step to internationalise BMW.

“Plant Rosslyn has over the past 50 years proven itself to be an essential member of our production network, consistently improving quality and productivity. The passion for the brand is clear, and the right teams with the right spirit are in place to direct its growth for the next 50 years.”

Five decades later, in addition to BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, the BMW Group South Africa business includes a National Sales Company that sells and distributes BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad; a Financial Services company established in 1990; and a software company (or IT Hub) servicing more than 50 countries.

Over 50 years, however, Plant Rosslyn has remained at the core of the BMW Group’s South African operation. More than R12,6 billion has been invested into the production facility by the BMW Group since 1995. To date, more than 1,6 million cars have been produced at this plant, which recently attained another significant milestone with the 300,000^th BMW X3 rolling off its assembly line.

Peter van Binsbergen, CEO of BMW Group South Africa and the first South African to occupy this seat, said: “BMW Group Plant Rosslyn is an iconic production facility within the BMW Group, and BMW Group South Africa is a global success story for the business!

“Plant Rosslyn represents a cornerstone of the BMW Group’s global production network of more than 30 sites in 15 countries. We built BMW 3 Series here for more than 30 years; a period that included production of the iconic 333i and the cherished 325iS ‘Gusheshe’. BMW South Africa benefited from the successful adoption of a government-endorsed export programme from 1995 before transitioning to an “X” plant in 2018.

“Given our rich and colourful history, while we acknowledge our past, our 50^th celebration is an equally good time to look ahead. I can only say thank you to the people of South Africa for allowing us to serve you for the past 50 years. We are not only a corporate citizen in South Africa, but through our people and our vehicles, we are a part of the fabric of South African society. Wait until you see what we intend for the next 50 years!”

Production at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn.

The clearest demonstration of the BMW Group’s long-term commitment to South Africa, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn has over the years produced iconic cars unique to South Africa. Products such as the BMW 2000 SA, BMW 745i, BMW 530 MLE, BMW 333i, as well as the BMW 325iS have laid the basis for the typical BMW brand DNA to become genuinely South African.

A Training Academy was established at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn in 1978 to equip craftspeople for the Plant. Even in the pre-democracy period, it was distinctive for accepting learners irrespective of their ethnicity. In 2018, the company opened a R73 million Training Academy at Plant Rosslyn, and in April 2019, a brand-new R109 million Retailer Training Centre was opened at the Midrand headquarter to support its retailer partners.

The BMW Group has since 1995 invested more than R12.6 billion into the production facility that, in 1999, became the first in the world to achieve certification for its integrated quality, health and safety, as well as environmental management system (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and BS 8800). An award-winning production facility, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn was bestowed Gold and Platinum honours in 2002 and 2015, respectively, in the respected JD Power Initial Quality Study.

Plant Rosslyn would go on to produce 1,191,604 BMW 3 Series over five generations, before changing to BMW X3 production in 2018. More than 300,000 BMW X3s have been produced at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn. The bulk of these units are exported to more than 40 markets, including 14 African countries.

Sustainability and efficiency are central to BMW Group Plant Rosslyn’s strategic direction, and it is a common thread throughout the facility’s value chain. Several key projects support Plant Rosslyn’s sustainability goals. They include, since 2015, the Bio2Watt partnership in pursuit of a carbon-neutral electricity supply, and a zero-waste-to-landfill project where waste is converted into bricks used for low-cost housing.

A social and cultural beacon.

BMW Group South Africa’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts are concentrated under the banner #WeBuildMoreThanJustCars. The company prides itself on building communities, opportunities, sustainable solutions, industry, and emotions. Sustainable educational activities are focussed at the Ntšha-Peu and Lethabong schools in Soshanguve, outside Pretoria, which is home to many BMW associates employed at Plant Rosslyn. These primary and secondary schools benefit from a close relationship with BMW Group South Africa that span facilities and resources, to learner mentoring programmes.

Our cultural engagement.

For over five decades, the BMW Group has been supporting hundreds of cultural initiatives worldwide. Unrestricted freedom of creative potential is of the utmost importance, as it is equally as crucial for the field of art as it is for ground-breaking innovations within a successful business enterprise. BMW Group South Africa supports local artists via its partnerships with The Southern Guild, and the BMW Young Collectors Co, among others. The longest-standing relationship, however, has been forged with Dr “Mam” Esther Mahlangu, a global icon of traditional Ndebele art. In 1991, Dr Mahlangu became the first African, and the first female, to adorn a BMW Art Car. Our relationship with Dr Mahlangu continues as she embarks on her first ever retrospective exhibition taking place in South Africa, the USA, and Europe from 2024 to 2027. 

Honouring the past, setting course for the future.

Celebrating its 50^th year allows BMW Group South Africa to look back at its unparalled history, its achievements, and its successes. Looking to the future, its local operations will refine their focus on sustainability (as an automotive manufacturer and a responsible corporate citizen), and the further expansion of the global BMW IT Hub situated in Pretoria’s Menlyn Maine.   

As the fastest growing innovation hub in the BMW Group, this crucial department provides IT services for core global BMW Group processes, including production and logistics, finance, and sales. The hub contributed R2.6 billion to the South African economy in 2022, with a staff complement totalling more than 2,000.

In 2023, the BMW Group South Africa directly and indirectly employs close to 23,000 people. This year, the company will reinforce its commitment to South Africa and its people, highlighting its benchmark-setting corporate responsibility partnerships and outlining the future of its state-of-the-art Rosslyn production facility. Midrand. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, which builds the BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) for South Africa and around 30 export markets, has added 16 African countries to its portfolio. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, situated outside Pretoria, has produced vehicles since 1968 and was established as the first BMW Group production facility outside Germany.

Plant Rosslyn first produced the BMW X3 in April 2018, after a R6.2bn investment to prepare it for production after close to 35 years of BMW 3 Series production. The investment – one of the biggest in the local automotive industry at the time – was used to upgrade the plant into one of the world’s most modern production facilities. More than 300,000 BMW X3s have been produced at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn.

The continuation of the BMW X3 story in South Africa, from its mid-lifecycle refresh in 2021, reaffirms the group’s commitment to operations in the country and, with the story extending beyond national borders, to the rest of Africa. The updated BMW X3 is being produced for 16 sub-Saharan African markets, including Senegal, Nigeria, Angola, Kenya, and Ethiopia. BMW X3s for these markets were previously sourced from BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the United States.

Johan Mouton, Plant Director at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, says: “The BMW X3 remains a crucial vehicle in our global production network and now, with exports to 16 African markets, it is also critical to our success on our continent. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn currently produces the third generation of the BMW X3 SAV and is able to manufacture up to 75,000 units per year, of which 96% is exported.

Munich. For the third time in a row, BMW M GmbH ended the financial year as the global market leader in the performance and high-performance car segment. Indeed, the company posted record sales once again in 2021. A total of 163,542 BMW M cars were delivered to customers worldwide last year, a 13 percent increase on 2020.

This growth was spread equally between the High-Performance sports cars and Performance cars made by BMW M GmbH, with both product categories raising their sales figures to a new level. “This success is the perfect start to our anniversary year,” says Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH. “M is in a stronger position than ever as it celebrates its 50th birthday.”

New BMW M3 and new BMW M4 enjoy immediate success.

The biggest drivers of growth among the High-Performance sports cars were the new BMW M3 and BMW M4 models introduced in spring 2021. Fuelled by a vehicle concept focused squarely on emotionally charged dynamism and unprecedented diversity in the model range, the new BMW M3 Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 10.2 – 10.0 l/100 km [27.7 – 28.3 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 231 – 227 g/km as per WLTP), new BMW M4 Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 10.1 – 9.9 l/100 km [28.0 – 28.5 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 230 – 226 g/km as per WLTP) and new BMW M4 Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 10.2 l/100 km [27.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 233 – 231 g/km as per WLTP) got off to an extremely successful start. The latest model generation is the first to offer customers two output levels topping out at 375 kW, the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and a choice of either a six-speed manual gearbox or the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission.

“The response to the new generation of the BMW M3 and BMW M4 has been simply overwhelming,” reports Timo Resch, Vice President Customer, Brand and Sales at BMW M GmbH. “We can therefore expect demand for these iconic sports cars to continue on an upward curve in 2022.”

Also making a powerful contribution to the latest rise in High-Performance model sales at BMW M GmbH were the BMW X5 M Competition (fuel consumption combined: 13.6 – 13.3 l/100 km [20.8 – 21,2 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 308 – 303 g/km as per WLTP) and BMW X6 M Competition (fuel consumption combined: 13.4 – 13.1 l/100 km [21.1 – 21.6 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 305 – 299 g/km as per WLTP). Following the successful market launch of the latest model generation the previous year, the charismatic High-Performance sports cars in the Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupé segment – both powered by a 460 kW V8 engine – increased their sales figures once again in 2021.

Alluring and in demand: the BMW M models in the BMW 4 Series range.

The dynamic excellence, agility and precision for which M is renowned also enabled the brand’s Performance models to delight and excite a wide range of customers over the past year. Credit for the latest boost to sales goes above all to the M models based on the new BMW 4 Series. Particularly popular were the variants of the new BMW 4 Series Coupé, whose line-up includes the BMW M440i Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 8.1 – 7.4 l/100 km [34.8 – 38.2 mpg imp].

The latest BMW X models within the ranks of M’s Performance cars also proved extremely desirable. Indeed, the BMW X3 M40i powered by a six-cylinder in-line engine with 285 kW and the BMW X7 M50i (fuel consumption combined: 12.8 – 12.3 l/100 km [22.1 – 23.0 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 292 – 280 g/km as per WLTP) with its 390 kW V8 unit both posted an increase in new registrations.

Looking ahead to an anniversary year brimming with highlights.

BMW M GmbH will continue its product offensive in this anniversary year with the addition of new High-Performance and Performance models. Highlights include the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé (fuel consumption combined: 8.8 – 8.1 l/100 km [32.1 – 34.9 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 200 – 185 g/km as per WLTP) and the arrival later in the year of the first BMW M3 Touring and an exclusive special-edition model based on the new BMW M4 Coupé.

In addition, the BMW Group subsidiary – which was founded as BMW Motorsport GmbH in May 1972 and enjoys the status of an independent manufacturer – will also drive the transformation to electric mobility. Following in the tyre tracks of the BMW i4 M50 (electric power consumption combined: 22.5 – 18.0 kWh/100 km as per WLTP; CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km) in the first half of 2022 will be the likewise fully electric BMW iX M60 (projected electric power consumption combined: 24.7 – 21.7 kWh/100 km as per WLTP; CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km).

The most powerful BMW M model ever made points the way to the future of the brand.

The anniversary year will be crowned by the start of production of the BMW XM. The most powerful BMW M car ever to go into series production is also the brand’s first High-Performance model to employ a plug-in hybrid drive system. Its newly developed M Hybrid technology brings together a V8 engine and a high-performance electric motor to develop maximum output of 550 kW and peak torque of 1,000 Nm. The design of the BMW XM majors on presence and extrovert appeal and in so doing sends out a clear statement in the luxury segment.

“Our first standalone model since the legendary BMW M1 represents a complete re-imagining of the high-performance car segment,” says van Meel. “The BMW XM blends expressive design and progressive interior luxury with an incomparable driving experience that serves up both sublime performance and the ability to glide along in near silence in all-electric mode. In so doing, it provides an inimitable expression of poise and assurance, and at the same time points the way to the future of our brand.”

Midrand – Sportier, more modern and more digital. BMW has refreshed its successful Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) with a new look, improved equipment and a range structure which has been optimised for customers. The redesigned front end and revised rear section lend even clearer emphasis to the robust off-road look and sporty appearance of the third-generation BMW X3. The refresh is rounded off with a modern interior with new equipment features and updated infotainment.

Modern, clearer product structure.

A new range structure ensures a greater focus on sportiness and “X-ness” as well as enhanced clarity through deliberate reduction. The M sports package and the familiar M variants are available as an alternative to the standard equipment enriched with high-quality X elements.

BMW X3 with classic X elements and sporty genes.

The new BMW X3 has a more modern appearance that conveys a more powerful presence, with design changes to the front and rear and an emphasis on classic X‑elements. The BMW kidney grille and headlights have been redesigned along with the front apron and rear bumper, while new graphics have been applied to the rear lights. High-quality X elements such as underbody protection and specific side skirts in the style of the previous X Line are already standard. The sporty genes of the Sports Activity Vehicle are underlined by the M sports package and the BMW X3 M40i.

New BMW kidney grille and flatter headlights.

With the redesigned BMW kidney grille, headlights that are around ten millimetres flatter and the new front apron, the BMW X3 looks almost like a new vehicle. More strikingly shaped, especially in the upper area, the BMW kidney grille is larger than before and now comprises a single-piece frame. A black bar in which the iCam is positioned if fitted ensures visual separation of the grille. The front headlights feature adaptive LED headlights with Matrix function, where the adverse weather light takes on the function of the previously separate fog lights. The BMW Laser Light with a range of up to 650 metres is now also available as an optional extra.

Front apron and rear apron redesigned.

Below the headlights, vertical air intakes arranged in a triangular interpretation frame the front bumper. In the new front apron, taut and amply-sized surfaces in body colour and the robust underbody protection reinforce the presence and high-quality aura of the SAV. The rear section of the new BMW X3 offers greater clarity as a result of various measures. A black border gives the full LED rear lights a more precise appearance, while the narrower light graphic now includes a three-dimensionally modelled pincer contour and horizontal turn signals integrated in filigree style. The emphasis on horizontal lines, for example in the concave area at the lower end of the tailgate, contributes to the tidy impression of the rear. The newly designed and elaborately painted underbody protection provides a powerful finish to the road. The new, flush-fitting free-form tailpipe trims are larger and sportier, conveying a more powerful presence.

M sports package with specific exterior details.

The M sports package gives the BMW X3 a sportier orientation. The specific front apron features significantly larger air inlets and inserts finished in high-gloss black, as well as more pronounced air curtains. The window graphics, roof rails and BMW kidney frame and bars are optionally available in high-gloss black. The sportier rear bumper includes a more striking diffuser finished in Dark Shadow along with two additional side air‑curtain‑panels in high-gloss black. The standard trim includes the new 20-inch Double‑Spoke 699 M alloy wheel in Midnight Grey Bicolor with 245/50 R20 tyres, as well as the M sports brake with blue or red brake calipers.

Further visual differentiation is offered by the BMW X3 M40i, that shows its affiliation to the BMW M GmbH portfolio with a specific BMW M kidney. In addition to a chrome frame, it bears the typical M double grille bars in high-gloss black and with an M logo. While the same aprons as in the M sports package are to be found at the front and rear, the aerodynamically optimised M exterior mirrors in high-gloss black, the free-form tailpipe trims in black chrome and the striking “Two Teeth” design ensure a distinctive look. The BMW X3 M40i is fitted as standard with the exclusive 21-inch M light alloy wheels double spoke 718M in Jet Black burnished.

Eight paint finishes for the BMW X3.

Following the redesign of the BMW X3, BMW offers a total of eight paint finishes in the regular range. The metallic paint finish Skyscraper Grey is new, and as is M Brooklyn Grey metallic from the M sports package upwards. The range of special finishes available is to be further expanded in the future.

Significantly revised interior.

The new BMW X3 adopts the centre console of the current BMW 4 Series. The free-standing, central Control Display with touch function now offers a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches as standard in all vehicles. A 12.3-inch version of the touch display is also available as an option. The significantly improved standard equipment now also includes sports seats with covers from a new Sensatec generation in the new Ray grain and with perforated main seat surfaces, as well as automatic climate control with 3-zone control.

To make the vehicle configuration process clearer and more straightforward for customers, not least reducing the number of conflicts, the complexity of the equipment lines and optional extras has deliberately been reduced by 30 per cent. In addition to the cupholder and a model-specific emblem, the centre console accommodates the newly designed control island with the gear selector lever, buttons for the start/stop system, the electric parking brake, hill descent control and various driving experience functions as well as the BMW Controller. The engine start button is positioned here, too. New electroplated trim elements on the air vents add a touch of elegance while emphasising the horizontal lines in the interior. Additional functions are offered by the optional extra Ambient Light, which features contour lighting above the decorative trim in the dashboard and ambient lighting that shines gently downwards below the accent trim to create a particularly high-quality, relaxing atmosphere in the interior.

Three diesel and two petrol engines on offer.

Five engine options will be available in South Africa for the new BMW X3. These include three diesel engines: with 110 kW in the BMW X3 sDrive18d, the 140-kW BMW X3 xDrive20d, and 195 kW in the BMW X3 xDrive30d.

The petrol engine models are the BMW X3 sDrive20i with 135 kW, and the BMW X3 M40i with 285 kW.

8-speed Steptronic transmission as standard.

All engine versions are combined with eight-speed Steptronic gearboxes specifically matched to the respective engine characteristics. The BMW X3 M40i features an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, including paddle shifts and Launch Control, as standard. BMW xDrive all-wheel drive makes a significant contribution to the versatile sporty flair of the BMW X3. Its precise electronic control ensures especially sporty power distribution that is typical of the brand. Its rear-wheel orientation makes dynamic cornering an especially intense experience. In addition, BMW xDrive optimises both driving stability and traction over rough terrain.

Driving Assistant Professional available for the first time.

In refreshing the BMW X3, BMW has reorganised and once again significantly expanded the range of modern driver assistance systems to enhance both comfort and safety. The Driving Assistant Professional, available for the first time as an option in this model series, offers the driver comfortable relief and increased safety in driving situations where there is a conscious desire for assistance. In addition to the Driving Assistant, which is also optional, functions include Active Cruise Control with improved functionality in the city, junction warning with additional city brake function, emergency lane assistant and improved steering/lane guidance assistant. The 3D environment visualisation Assisted View in the instrument cluster provides an overview of which Driving Assistant Professional assistance systems are activated and what functions they offer. Parking Assistant Plus now also includes the reverse assistant, which helps retrace a completed line in reverse. Another new feature in the BMW X3 is the optional BMW Drive Recorder, which takes videos around the vehicle.

BMW Live Cockpit Professional with 12.3-inch display as standard.

BMW Live Cockpit Professional offers a fully digital display network: the high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and the Control Display each have a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches. With BMW Live Cockpit Professional as standard and intelligent networking including innovative digital services based on BMW Operating System 7, the BMW X3 now offers particularly close interaction between driver and vehicle. BMW Live Cockpit Professional includes the iDrive operating system with a Touch Controller. BMW Head-Up Display is standard on the M40i model.

New generation of navigation with BMW Maps.

One of the most important innovations in digital services is BMW Maps. The cloud-based system enables significant performance improvement, a high degree of accuracy and simplified destination entry. The new-generation navigation system offers extremely fast and dynamic route calculation based on precise real-time traffic data delivered at short intervals.

Smartphone connectivity and integration of third-party services.

BMW Live Cockpit Professional offers optimised, wireless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay. Here, the driver can view all the important information from the apps on the Control Display and also – in intelligently processed form – in the instrument cluster and the optional BMW Head-Up Display.

With Android Auto™, the BMW Group has added another customer-relevant service to its range of seamless in-vehicle connectivity, offering easy and safe use of smartphone functions such as music, media or messaging apps while driving. Highlights of the interaction between Android Auto and BMW include convenient and wireless networking and the intelligent integration of Google MapsTM navigation instructions in the BMW Head-up Display.

Enhanced functionality for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is also constantly gaining additional capabilities in the BMW X3, creating an even more intensive bond between driver and vehicle. With the digital companion, naturally spoken instructions can now be used to regulate the air conditioning, open and close the windows or change the driving experience switch modes, for instance. It can also access the new News app, which reads out the latest news to passengers, and learn routines that increase comfort and driving pleasure in certain situations.

Remote Software Upgrade updates “over-the-air”.

Since 2018 and the introduction of BMW Operating System 7, it has been possible for drivers of BMW models to keep their vehicle constantly up to date with the latest software status using Remote Software Upgrade. In the BMW X3, upgrades can include different content from new services to improved vehicle features and can be loaded "over‑the-air". Furthermore, intelligent networking offers the option to integrate additional functions into the vehicle at a later date. The options that can be retrofitted digitally include the high beam assistant and BMW Drive Recorder.

The next chapter in South Africa’s automotive story gets underway this week as BMW Group South Africa starts production of the new BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) at its Rosslyn plant, outside Pretoria.  Building on the success of its predecessor, this occasion once again demonstrates the BMW Group’s commitment to its operations in South Africa.

The X3 was first produced at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn in April 2018 after a R6.2bn investment in the plant to prepare it for production. This was the biggest investment of its kind at the time for BMW Group South Africa. Following the assembly of the 200,000^th BMW X3 at Plant Rosslyn on Friday, 6 August 2021, today the BMW Group South Africa is proud to reach another production milestone.

Success of the X3 to date

The continuation of the BMW X3 story in South Africa demonstrates BMW’s commitment to operations in the country, and follows on the sales success of the model that has been established as a clear leader in the segment in 2020.

With strong numbers achieved in the first half of 2021, the vehicle has not only been a success locally but also abroad with 95% of the cars produced at Plant Rosslyn destined for export to close to 30 markets.

For the last three years in a row, BMW Group South Africa claimed segment leadership as the top-selling luxury car brand in the country.

Protecting livelihoods and securing the future of the plant

This continuous trend further secures the future of Plant Rosslyn, as well as the livelihoods of more than 40 000 people directly and indirectly employed at BMW Group South Africa’s facilities and within the supply chain.

BMW’s factories are famous for their flexibility, and Plant Rosslyn is no different. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn was the first plant built by the BMW Group outside of Germany. The plant built the BMW 3 Series for 35 years, manufacturing 1,191,604 units during the period and increasing production with each new model.

Sportier, more modern and more digital. For the second phase of the model cycle, BMW has refreshed its successful Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) BMW and the Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) BMW with a new look, improved equipment and a range structure which has been optimised for customers. The redesigned front end and revised rear section lend even clearer emphasis to the robust off-road look and sporty appearance of the third-generation BMW X3. Its coupé counterpart, the second-generation BMW X4, adopts the new front end, adds its own accentuation with the exclusive BMW mesh kidney grille and offers a particularly dynamic rear end. The refresh is rounded off with a modern interior with new equipment features and updated infotainment. BMW M GmbH is also upgrading the M models of the BMW X3 and BMW X4 at the same time.

Modern drive technology and a clearer product structure.
The introduction of mild hybrid technology with 48-volt‑starter generator now also with all petrol engines ensures a broad drive portfolio at the cutting edge of technology. A new range structure ensures a greater focus on sportiness and “X-ness” as well as enhanced clarity through deliberate reduction. The M sports package and the familiar M variants are available as an alternative to the standard equipment enriched with high-quality X elements. The new BMW X3 and the new BMW X4 are due to see their world premiere at the Chengdu Motor Show in China (27 August to 5 September), while the European premiere will take place at the IAA in Munich (7 to 12 September).

The new BMW X3 has a more modern appearance that conveys a more powerful presence, with design changes to the front and rear and an emphasis on classic X‑elements. The BMW kidney grille and headlights have been redesigned along with the front apron and rear bumper, while new graphics have been applied to the rear lights. High-quality X elements such as underbody protection and specific side skirts in the style of the previous X Line are already standard. The sporty genes of the Sports Activity Vehicle are underlined by the M sports package and the BMW X3 M40i.

New BMW kidney grille and flatter headlights.
With the redesigned BMW kidney grille, headlights that are around ten millimetres flatter and the new front apron, the BMW X3 looks almost like a new vehicle. More strikingly shaped, especially in the upper area, the BMW kidney grille is larger than before and now comprises a single-piece frame. A black bar in which the iCam is positioned if fitted ensures visual separation of the grille. The front headlights feature adaptive LED headlights with Matrix function, where the adverse weather light takes on the function of the previously separate fog lights. The BMW Laser Light with a range of up to 650 metres is now also available as an optional extra.

Front apron and rear apron redesigned.
Below the headlights, vertical air intakes arranged in a triangular interpretation frame the front bumper. In the new front apron, taut and amply-sized surfaces in body colour and the robust underbody protection reinforce the presence and high-quality aura of the SAV. The rear section of the new BMW X3 offers greater clarity as a result of various measures. A black border gives the full LED rear lights a more precise appearance, while the narrower light graphic now includes a three-dimensionally modelled pincer contour and horizontal turn signals integrated in filigree style. The BMW X4 adopts the new front end of the BMW X3, but adds an exclusive distinguishing feature in the form of the mesh kidney familiar from other sporty BMW models. Compared to the BMW X3, the adaptive LED headlights with Matrix function are already standard, while the BMW Laser Light, which is particularly light-intensive and has a long range, is also available as an option for the BMW X4. Featuring flat full LED rear lights that emphasise the vehicle width and protrude strikingly from the vehicle body in their three-dimensional design, the rear section now has an even more clear-cut shape in the BMW X4 revision. The new rear apron has a tidier appearance, with an increased proportion of painted surface and reflectors now placed vertically and lower in the bumper. The wide free-form tailpipe trims echo the horizontal lines of the upper section.

M sports package with striking rear apron in the BMW X4.
From the M sports package onwards, the BMW X4 features the BMW mesh kidney, the frame and inserts of which are painted in high‑gloss black on request, as well as a new rear apron with a wide, offset insert in the shape of an anvil. Like the side air‑curtain‑panels, this is finished in high-gloss black and gives a powerful overall impression that is distinctly road-oriented. As with the BMW X3, the M sports package includes the new 19-inch alloy wheel Y‑-Spoke 887M in Midnight Grey Bicolor with 245/50 R19 tyres as standard. Additional 20-inch and 21-inch wheels and the M sports brake are available as options.

BMW M insignia for the BMW X4 M40i.
The BMW X4 M40i is based on the appearance and standard equipment of the corresponding X3 models and, like these, bear typical BMW M insignia such as the specific BMW M kidney with chrome frame, double kidney bars in high‑gloss black and M logo as well as the aerodynamically optimised M exterior mirrors in high-gloss black. The rear apron with its anvil-shaped insert is complemented by air curtain trim in high-gloss black. Analogous to the BMW X3 M40i is the free-form tailpipe trims in black chrome with the two "teeth" and the tyres.

Hybrid technology for petrol engines.
The new BMW X3 and the new BMW X4 demonstrate increasing electrification with modern hybrid technology. The two petrol engines are now also being fitted with this technology including a 48‑-volt‑starter generator, ensuring even better driving performance with lower fuel consumption and increased driving comfort. The energy obtained by means of recuperation and stored in the 48-volt battery can also be used for an electric boost of 8 kW in addition to supplying the 12‑volt on-board network.

It offers information on the state of the vehicle at all times and, depending on the options fitted, enables remote access functions such as vehicle location, locking and unlocking the doors or recording the vehicle’s surroundings (Remote 3D View).

Midrand – The BMW X3 might be perfectly at home on rough terrain and winding gravel tracks, but the Mzansi Edition of this locally-built hero displays another, more athletic dimension to the SAV with a range of sportier features.

While the BMW X3 Mzansi Edition remains rugged to its core – it is, after all equipped with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive as standard – it shows off its street smarts with a range of accessories, including:

Midrand, South Africa – Following BMW Group South Africa’s R6,1 billion investment announced in the past three years for the production of the BMW X3 and customer vehicles rolling off the production line since April 2018 at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, the locally produced BMW X3 is currently embarking on a tour to explore its new home turf.

The tour, which is called the “BMW X3 xPlore Tour”, will see local and international media visiting BMW Group South Africa’s completed state-of-the-art production plant in Rosslyn, north of Pretoria, exploring the first-ever BMW X Lifestyle Park (XLP) as well as the Bio2Watt biogas plant – Plant Rosslyn’s renewable energy supplier – and Mpumalanga as well as Limpopo’s top attractions.

Exploring the fruits of infrastructure investment at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn.

The BMW X3 xPlore Tour at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn includes the viewing of the largest infrastructure upgrades in the plant’s 45-year history. The upgrades included a new body shop housing almost 300 robots that lend a hand to the plant’s production line employees to begin the process of building the BMW X3. The paint shop, the next chain in the BMW X3 production process, received major modifications in new paint technology and body storage. On the other hand, the assembly line, the last chain in the production process also received significant adjustments – the biggest being the elevation of the roof height and body carriers given the size of the BMW X3 compared to the BMW 3 Series that was produced at the plant. All these infrastructure upgrades have raised the maximum production capacity of the BMW X3 by almost 10% to 76,000 units, leaving the plant with excellent potential in the future to produce the highest volume ever in its 45-year history!

Key to the progress of BMW Group Plant Rosslyn is people. It is for this reason that BMW Group South Africa has taken training and development to the next level by investing R73 million for a new Training Academy at its Rosslyn plant. With this academy, the company is able to host a staggering 300 apprentices per year and conduct training for its employees and managers. More than 2,000 people have moved from the BMW Group Training Academy to Plant Rosslyn since the inception of the academy and history of the Plant.

Unleashing the inner strength of the BMW X3 at the first-ever BMW X Lifestyle Park – to open to the public in November 2018.

With more than 30% of BMW’s global sales being made up of BMW X models, the BMW X3 xPlore Tour will make a turn at the newly developed BMW X Lifestyle Park in Waterfall, Midrand. Scheduled to be open to the public in November 2018, the BMW XLP is a 1,3km off-road track that has been developed to showcase the capability of the BMW xDrive system within all BMW X models via twelve off-road modules. The cost for off-road BMW Driving Experience courses will start from R2,750 when the facility opens. The BMW XLP will also offer various family-orientated lifestyle experiences such as abseiling, zip-lining and park runs. Additional features will include a BMW Lifestyle store with BMW accessories, a coffee shop and food stalls as well as fitness activations.

Witnessing how more than 25,000 cows power BMW Group Plant Rosslyn’s electricity needs.

Demonstrating BMW Group Plant Rosslyn’s green credentials, the BMW X3 xPlore Tour will go through the Bio2Watt Biogas Plant in Bronkhorstspruit. The plant is located on the premises of one of South Africa’s larger feedlots, run by Beefcor and provides the facility with proximity to key fuel supplies, grid access and sufficient water.

About 40,000 tons of cattle manure and 20,000 tons of mixed organic waste per annum is fed into two anaerobic digesters in which biogas is produced. This then goes into a gas engine to produce electricity, which is distributed into the grid for uptake by power purchasers such as BMW. The City of Tshwane is also a key supplier of waste to the project.

By the end of 2018, 100% of BMW Group Plant Rosslyn’s electricity supply will be obtained from renewable sources – in line with the BMW Group’s 2020 deadline for all group production locations to transition to fully renewable electricity supplies.

The third generation BMW X3 – uncompromising dynamics on every terrain.

The BMW X3 was the car that launched the mid-size SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) segment in 2003. Since then, BMW has recorded more than 1.5 million new registrations of the X3 across the two model generations so far. And now the third generation BMW X3 – which was launched in South Africa in November 2017 – is writing the next chapter in this success story with an even more striking, dynamic design language, powerful yet also efficient drive systems and luxurious arrangements.

Like all members of the successful X family, it blends standout driving qualities on any terrain with unrestricted everyday usability.

On the BMW X3 xPlore Tour, the first BMW X3 (xDrive30d) that was produced by BMW Group Plant Rosslyn will be among the convoy of other locally produced BMW X3s (xDrive20ds and xDrive30ds) to explore the top attractions of the Mpumalanga and Limpopo province.

The BMW X3 xDrive30d: mightier and cleaner than ever before.

The BMW X3 xDrive30d features a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel engine under the bonnet and delivers maximum output of 195 kW (fuel consumption combined: 6.1 – 5.7 l/100 km]; CO₂ emissions: 162g/km; predecessor: 190 kW) and peak torque has been increased by an impressive 80 Nm to 620 Nm between 2,000 and 2,500 rpm.

As a result, the new BMW X3 xDrive30d storms from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds and goes on to reach a top speed of 240 km/h. It returns average fuel consumption of 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres, while emissions have also been cut once again: the average CO₂ figure works out at 149 grams per kilometre (a reduction of 7 g/km).

The BMW X3 xDrive20d: reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

With an output of 140 kW (fuel consumption combined: 5.5 – 5.0 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions: 146g/km) and torque peaking at 400 Nm between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm, the vital statistics of the diesel engine in the new BMW X3 xDrive20d are unchanged from the predecessor model. The BMW X3 xDrive20d completes the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 8.0 seconds and posts a top speed of 213 km/h.

The cutting-edge BMW TwinPower Turbo technology at the heart of the BMW X3 petrol engines comprises TwinScroll turbocharging, High Precision Injection, Double-VANOS variable camshaft control and Valvetronic fully variable valve timing. The diesel units, meanwhile, employ a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry as well as a common-rail direct injection system generating injection pressures of up to 2,500 bar.

From September 2018, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn will begin producing the entry level petrol engine (BMW X3 xDrive20i) to join the current BMW X3 engine line up.

The BMW X3 xDrive20i is as dynamic as ever to drive and yet more efficient than comparable rivals. In this power variant, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine musters 135 kW (fuel consumption combined: 7.4 – 7.2 l/100 km; CO₂ emissions combined: 169 – 165 g/km) and transmits its peak torque of 290 Nm (predecessor: 270 Nm) to the crankshaft between 1,350 and 4,600 rpm. The dash from 0 to 100 km/h takes just 8.3 seconds in the new BMW X3 xDrive20i, while top speed is 215 km/h. Average fuel consumption is now 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres equating to CO₂ emissions of 165 grams per kilometre.

Midrand, South Africa – BMW Group South Africa despatched the first proudly South African BMW X3 cars for export on Friday, transporting more than 100 units on 27 wagons via train to the Port of Durban. This marked a significant day for BMW Group South Africa as the company’s manufacturing plant at Rosslyn, Tshwane, continues to ramp up production of the BMW X3.

Tim Abbott, CEO of BMW Group South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa said it was “a big moment for us at BMW Group South Africa”.

“It’s the result of a R6.1bn investment into the country and the culmination of three years of hard work and planning. It’s really exciting to know that BMW Group Plant Rosslyn has joined the enormous success story of BMW’s X models globally, and goes to show the power of combining good industrial policy and foreign investment,” Mr Abbott added.

In terms of the Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP), BMW Group announced a R6.1bn investment to prepare the Rosslyn facility, and the associates who work there, for X3 production. It is one of the biggest single automotive investments in South African history. In February 2018, Plant Rosslyn produced the last of 1 191 604 BMW 3 Series cars built over five model generations and 35 years.

Upgrading the plant for X3 production has represented the largest infrastructure upgrade in the plant’s history, but it has gone ahead on time and without any unplanned disruptions. On Friday, in the culmination of these efforts, the first South Africa-built BMW X3s were loaded onto a train bound for their European customers.

The BMW Vehicle Distribution Centre in Rosslyn can accommodate up to three train despatches a week, with each transport capable of carrying up to 160 cars.

BMW Group Plant Rosslyn is a state-of-the-art facility, with BMW X3 production initially planned with a maximum capacity of 71000 units a year. However, BMW under-estimated the phenomenal demand for the new BMW X3 and, after a further R160m investment to increase linespeed, the maximum capacity of the plant was raised almost 10% to 76000 units a year. Within this maximum capacity, BMW Group South Africa is confident that the plant will produce record volumes next year. This will add to the growing success of BMW’s X models across the world, which now make up more than 30% of BMW’s global volume.

Midrand, South Africa – A new chapter in South Africa’s automotive story began this week as BMW Group South Africa started production of the new BMW X3 at its Rosslyn plant. With customer vehicles now rolling off the line, BMW Group once again demonstrates its commitment to its operations in South Africa.

In 2015, BMW Group announced a R6bn investment into South Africa in order to prepare BMW Group Plant Rosslyn for the BMW X3 production. This week, is the culmination of three years of hard work and planning resulting in production starting on time in Rosslyn.

Ensuring that production follows demand

The BMW Group assigns production to its facilities around the world on the basis of various factors. Demand for BMW’s X-derivative models has grown to more than 30% of worldwide sales since the launch of the first BMW X5 in 1999. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn was assigned production of the new BMW X3 on the basis that demand exceeds the capacity of the Group’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. This change has secured the future of Plant Rosslyn as well as the livelihoods of thousands of people at facilities and in the supply chain.

BWM Group Plant Rosslyn was the first plant built by the BMW Group outside of Germany. The plant built the BMW 3 Series for 35 years, manufacturing a total of 1,191,604 units during the period, and increasing production with every model. With a planned maximum capacity of 71 000 units of the BMW X3, which was later increased (with an additional R160m investment) to 76 000, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn has the opportunity to flexibly match volumes to demand, and to build more cars than ever before.

Tim Abbott, CEO of BMW Group South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, says the successful ramp-up of production of the BMW X3 at Rosslyn is a vote of confidence in the country and in BMW Group South Africa’s associates.

“The allocation of production of such a crucial model to our plant is about as big a vote of confidence as it gets,” Abbott says. “The demand for the BMW X3 globally is powerful, and ramping up on time and to the right standards is vital to the model’s success.”

Munich/Arjeplog. Driving dynamic and reliability are just two of the major characteristics of any BMW automobile. To ensure that a BMW functions in all conditions and that the customer is able to enjoy unrestricted access to that brand-typical “driving pleasure” at any time, BMW invests a great deal of time and know-how in both the construction and the testing of new automobiles. Long before a new model series arrives on the market, it will have had to withstand possibly the most severe endurance tests. This includes, for example, testing under extreme climatic conditions such as those prevailing in scorching hot deserts or freezing cold winter landscapes.

Fine tuning for optimal safety and maximum driving enjoyment.

Moreover, the extensive ice surfaces of frozen lakes and the numerous remote roads with their firmly packed layers of snow offer excellent conditions for fine tuning of the settings activated via the Driving Experience Control function – and hence for the application of maximum driving pleasure and best possible driving safety. As a result, engineers are in a position to sense the vehicle’s dynamic behaviour much more accurately and synchronize the control of driver assistant systems such as Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) even more precisely and to attune it to the vehicle as a whole. It is this painstaking development work that later provides the customer with a competently tuned chassis for that typical BMW driving pleasure.

Ideal preconditions for testing the BMW X3 in the polar region.

Within the framework of the final winter trials, a BMW testing team completed a fastidious testing programme in wintery North Sweden. In the landscape around the small town of Arjeplog, pre-series models of the new BMW X3 had to prove that they are also able to withstand cold, ice and snow. Located in the historic province of Lapland barely 56 kilometres south of the polar circle, Arjeplog offers the ideal conditions for this. An abundant amount of snow and temperatures of minus 20 degrees and below cause the many lakes in the surrounding area to freeze over. The resulting vast, even surfaces serve as proving grounds on which steering, suspension and drive characteristics can be meticulously tested and various different technical solutions compared against one another. In the process, the intelligent four-wheel technology xDrive is able to demonstrate its advantages by not only ensuring best possible traction on icy surfaces but, thanks to fully variable distribution of torque, also by optimizing handling agility, this in turn resulting in enhanced driving dynamics and active driving safety.

Highlights. It was back in 2003 that BMW founded the new mid-size Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment with the launch of the X3. That means the BMW X3 has been a paragon of sporty dynamics, premium ambience and robust agility, coupled with low fuel consumption and emissions, for over 10 years now – racking up sales figures of more than one million units in the process. The second generation of the successful BMW X3 has made a compelling case for itself since its introduction in 2010, boasting the best interior and boot measurements and the greatest versatility in its class.

And now the new BMW X3 (fuel consumption combined: 8.3–4.7* l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 193–124* g/km) is set to build inexorably on its segment leadership. A pair of new-generation diesel engines, producing more power but once again burning less fuel, serve to improve dynamic performance and reduce pollutant emissions. The exterior and interior design of the new BMW X3 reveal stylistic revisions and also add further depth to the car’s practicality with detail solutions responding to customer requirements.

Dynamic appearance and exclusive ambience.
The new BMW X3 cuts a visually more powerful figure with its new, modified twin circular headlights (LED headlights are optional), a more eye-catching kidney grille, new front and rear bumpers, and exterior mirrors with integrated turn signal indicators – shining an even brighter spotlight on signature BMW X model design features. A high level of perceived quality and exclusivity also defines the interior of the new BMW X3. Chrome applications, a centre console with optional automatic climate control system in high-gloss black-panel look, and new cupholders with a sliding cover for the centre console underline the car’s premium appearance. New exterior colours, upholstery designs, interior trim strips and light-alloy wheels enable even more refined individualisation. The new xLine equipment package, meanwhile, allows owners to lend greater emphasis still to the dynamic and robust SAV character of the BMW X3. And the Smart Opener for the automatic tailgate and storage package (both optional) further enhance the already impressive functionality of the BMW X3.

World premiere for the new 2.0-litre diesel unit with 140 kW.
The new BMW X3 is available from launch with a choice of four diesel and three petrol engines, with outputs ranging from 110 kW to 230 kW. The state-of-the-art units with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology guarantee outstanding performance combined with low fuel consumption, and all meet the EU6 exhaust gas standard. At the same time, the output of the X3 xDrive20d (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 5.8–5.4*/5.1–4.8*/5.4–5.0* l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 141–131* g/km), for example, rises from 135 kW to 140 kW, while the fuel consumption of the automatic version is 7.1 per cent lower than that of its predecessor. The BMW X3 xDrive20d, which gives this new 2.0-litre turbodiesel its global premiere, therefore sets the benchmark in its class. It is an achievement matched by the new 110 kW BMW X3 sDrive18d (not for SA - fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 5.8–5.4*/4.7–4.3*/5.1–4.7* l/100 km]; CO2 emissions combined: 134–124* g/km with classical rear-wheel drive and a six-speed manual gearbox. Likewise leading the way in their segments are the BMW X3 xDrive28i (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 9.3–8.7*/6.3–5.9*/7.4–7.0* l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 172–162* g/km) with 180 kW and the BMW X3 xDrive35i (fuel consumption urban/extra-urban/combined: 10.7/6.9/8.3 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 193 g/km) with 225 kW.

BMW EfficientDynamics: driving pleasure and low fuel consumption.
The trailblazing BMW EfficientDynamics package of technology brings the Auto Start Stop function, coasting function, Brake Energy Regeneration and on-demand operation of ancillary units to the new BMW X3, resulting in the lowest fuel consumption and emissions in the segment. In addition, fourth-generation low-rolling-resistance tyres make a significant contribution to the excellent environmental performance of the new BMW X3 by reducing CO2 emissions by 7 g/km.

BMW ConnectedDrive: driver assistance and infotainment.
The new BMW X3 advances the company’s commitment to the link-up of driver, vehicle and outside world, an area in which BMW is an undisputed leader. Among the outstanding new features from BMW ConnectedDrive on board the BMW X3 are the iDrive Controller with integrated touchpad (for text input using finger movements), Parking Assistant, the full-colour BMW Head-Up Display, the anti-dazzle High Beam Assistant and Driving Assistant Plus, including Lane Departure Warning, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function and preventive pedestrian protection.

Also available under the BMW ConnectedDrive umbrella are Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI), Concierge Services and the Intelligent Emergency Call function - available to order in South Africa from July 2014. Achieving the best rating in the Euro NCAP crash test is proof of the very high level of the safety concept developed for the BMW X models. The new BMW X3 boasts an extremely stable body structure, and the forces exerted on the vehicle in a collision are deflected along precisely defined load paths and absorbed by generous deformation zones. Consequently, the passenger cell fulfils its function as a survival space even in serious collisions. Standard safety equipment inside the new BMW X3 includes front, side and curtain head airbags that protect both the driver and the passengers from injury. Also standard are belt latch tensioners and belt force limiters for the front seats and ISOFIX systems in the rear for attaching child seats, as well as the option of deactivating the front passenger airbag. The restraint systems are controlled by the central safety electronics, which take into account the type and severity of an accident to trigger the most effective protective features in each case.

In their evaluation of the crash test results, the assessors concluded that the new BMW X3 provides a high degree of occupant safety in all seats. Its stable passenger cell provides comprehensive injury protection in a front-end collision for both the driver and the passengers, regardless of a person’s size and the position of their seat. Here the Sports Activity Vehicle was awarded outstanding ratings for the protection of children aged around three years or 18 months in the relevant-sized child seats. For its side impact protection, the BMW X3 likewise achieved the maximum available points.

From October 2011, the new BMW X3 will come with a choice of three petrol engines and three diesel units spanning an output range of 135 kW to 230 kW. In South Africa, the BMW X3 will only be offered with a choice of two petrol engines and two diesel units. An exceptionally diverse portfolio of power units thus joins forces with the SAV’s outstanding agility – with intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive as standard – and enhanced ride comfort. Thanks to a comprehensive range of BMW EfficientDynamics technology, including the Auto Start-Stop function that can be combined with both the six-speed manual and the eight-speed automatic transmission, the BMW X3 also achieves top ratings in its segment for fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

In October 2011 the BMW X3 Drive20i will be available as the new entry-level model among the petrol variants. Its newly developed 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit blends a hallmark BMW sporty power curve with exceptionally high efficiency. The new engine’s BMW TwinPower Turbo technology includes a turbocharging system based on the twin-scroll principle; along with High Precision Injection direct petrol injection, Double-Vanos variable camshaft control and VALVETRONIC variable valve control. Here the new powerplant takes its lead from the technology package of the 225 kW multi-award-winning six-in-line unit of the BMW X3 xDrive35i.

Thanks to the use of aluminium, the powerplant of the BMW X3 xDrive20i is particularly light in weight and reaches its peak output of 135 kW at 4,800 rpm. Maximum torque of 270 Newton metres is already available at 1,250 rpm. The new BMW X3 xDrive20i features an eight-speed automatic transmission. In both versions, the standard range of BMW EfficientDynamics technology includes, among other features, the Auto Start-Stop function, which automatically switches the engine off when the car is stationary at traffic lights or in congestion in order to avoid unnecessary fuel consumption when idling.

Top athlete with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology: new six-cylinder diesels in the BMW X3 xDrive30d and BMWxDrive35d.

A new edition of the world’s sportiest six-cylinder diesel engines will deliver a particularly enthralling experience of driving pleasure in the new BMW X3 xDrive35d and BMW X3 xDrive30d. The 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology drums up peak output of 230 kW, reached at 4,400 rpm, making the BMW X3 xDrive35d the most powerful variant in the SAV’s model range. With maximum torque of 630 Newton metres on tap from as low as 1,500 to 2,500 rpm, the new diesel engine also ensures impressive pulling power. On the other hand, the BMW X3 xDrive30d generates maximum output of 190kW, reached at 4, 000 rpm, and a maximum torque of 560Nm from 2,000 to 2,750 rpm.

The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology of the new all-aluminium unit comprises further advanced two-stage turbocharging (Variable Twin Turbo) and latest-generation common-rail direct injection. At low engine speeds the small turbocharger is deployed. The air it compresses is first fed past the larger turbocharger to the combustion chambers, ensuring limitless development of charge pressure. During heavier throttle application, an electronic controller of the bypass unit engages the larger turbocharger. Extremely spontaneous response is thus ensured by a power curve to match the relevant requirement. The injection system features precision solenoid injectors and maximum pressure of 1,800 bar to guarantee particularly efficient and clean combustion. The BMW X3 xDrive35d comes equipped as standard with the eight-speed automatic transmission including Auto Start-Stop.

For the eleventh time now, readers of “Auto Bild Allrad” were asked to name their favourite models from those available on the German car market. In nine categories, there were more than 130 four-wheel drive vehicles to choose from. The new BMW X3 promptly secured first place in the category “Off-road vehicles and SUVs ranging from 25,000 to 40,000 Euros”. The associated title of “Four-Wheel Drive Car of the Year 2011” was awarded during a festive ceremony in Frankfurt on 24 March 2011.

With a captivating design, a unique combination of sportiness and efficiency as well as the largest and most variable luggage compartment in the competitive environment, the BMW X3, which has been on sale in Germany since November 2010, yet again sets standards in driving pleasure, versatility and premium quality.

Compared to the predecessor model, with which BMW established the concept of the Sports Activity Vehicle in this segment, it offers a noticeable increase in space, even more efficient engines, optimum motoring comfort and a widened choice of innovative equipment features. Both at the front and at the rear the new BMW X3 convinces through outstanding travel comfort and a high-class ambience. With a 550-litre loading capacity, which can be increased to 1,600 litres, and 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats, the vehicle’s

carrying capacities also set new benchmarks for the segment.

In the spring of 2011, the engine portfolio for the new BMW X3 will comprise two petrol engines and two diesel engines with a power output ranging from 135 kW/184 bhp to 225 kW/306 bhp. Depending on the engine variant, the new BMW X3 features an eight-speed automatic transmission either as standard or as an option. The still unique, intelligent four-wheel drive system xDrive has been optimised even further. Electronically controlled power

distribution ensures not only supreme traction and maximum road stability on slippery surfaces, but also superior dynamics on the road, thus providing that unmistakable driving pleasure that is so typical of BMW. The design of the new BMW X3 combines the typical BMW X character with a dynamically stretched silhouette. BMW xDrive four wheel drive technology not only optimises traction, but has also been specifically harmonised to ensure enhanced driving dynamics. The new BMW X3 offers state-of-the-art qualities with uncompromising diversity, combining both driving pleasure and efficiency with comfort and functionality, durability and elegance.

The new BMW X3 offers a choice of two ultra-modern power units at the launch. The four cylinder xDrive20d develops a maximum power output of 135 kW, exceeding that of its predecessor by 5 kW.  At the same time, average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle has dropped by 14 percent to 5.6 litres/100 km. The new BMW X3 xDrive35i is powered by a 225 kW straight six-cylinder petrol engine.

The design:

Urban elegance, dynamically flowing lines and the characteristic features of a BMW X model.

The body design of the new BMW X3 conveys urban elegance, durability and agility. The combination of a flat front end and a high rear end produces, when viewed from the side, a dynamically formed wedge shape, indicating the vehicle’s sporting characteristics. Convex and concave surfaces are accentuated with distinctively structured lines, giving the car body the appearance of a meticulously modelled sculpture.

The BMW X-specific black bordering on the lower edge of the car body of the new BMW X3 has an exceptionally discreet design.

The X3 combines the characteristic proportions of a Sports Activity with both classic and new BMW design elements. The modern design language with that unique interplay of concave and convex surfaces gives the X3 a youthful, fresh appearance. Numerous characteristic details, particularly the                 re-interpretation of the classic “Hofmeister kick” in the rear side windows, the newly designed double kidney grille, as well as the front and rear lights underline the unique position of this special model within the BMW range. Long wheelbase with short overhangs and the roof line slowly dropping
to the rear accentuate the dynamic character of this Sports Activity even at a standstill. Powerfully bulged wheel arches and the striking front end, finally, give this newcomer a strong character full of self-confidence, emphasizing its superior stance in every situation.

A new dimension in the BMW model range.

The basic facts and figures alone clearly show that this is an all-new, absolutely unique model series: Measuring 4,565 millimetres in length, the X3 is 87 millimetres longer than the 3 Series Touring, but almost 30 centimetres shorter than the new 5 Series Saloon. And measuring 4,667 mm from bumper to bumper, the X5, in turn, is clearly the X3’s bigger brother.

We find the same relative figures when considering the wheelbase of the X3 measuring 2,795 millimetres, versus 2,725 millimetres on the 3 Series Touring and 2,820 millimetres on the X5. In terms of height, on the other hand, the X3, measuring 1,674 millimetres, is clearly higher than both the 3 Series Touring (1429 mm) and the 5 Series Saloon (1,468 mm), only the X5 leaving an even longer shadow with its height of 1,715 mm. And with only the driver
sitting at the wheel, ground clearance of the X3 measuring exactly
201 millimetres is absolutely sufficient even on rough terrain.

Muscular straight-six power units for sporting performance.

BMW’s straight-six petrol engines famous for their supreme refinement and performance ensure dynamic motoring wherever you go. (Diesel engines will follow.) Developing maximum output of 170 kW, the agile X3 3.0i reaches a top speed in standard trim of 210 km/h, the optional high-speed set-up available with the Sports Package allowing an even higher top speed of 224 km/h. The power unit featured in the X3 2.5i, in turn, develops maximum output of 141 kW.

Revving smoothly even up to high speeds, the 3.0-litre six-cylinder also allows the driver to accelerate quickly and dynamically from 0–100 km/h in just
8,1 seconds. And despite this performance the ultra-modern 3.0-litre engine outperforms even the strict EU 4 emission standard, consuming
just 11.4 litres (100 kilometres).

At launch the X3 3.0i comes as standard with a five-speed automatic transmission. The 2.5i variant is kitted with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, while the five-speed automatic transmission is available as an option.

The new xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

The all-new, intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system setting a new standard in the agility of all-wheel-drive vehicles is a particular highlight of the BMW X3: xDrive allows infinite, fully variable distribution of drive forces between the front and rear axle, the system immediately recognising the need for a change
in power distribution and responding extremely quickly to such a change, in usual road-going situations generally before the wheel even loses its grip.
This enables xDrive to transmit optimum drive power to the respective axle at all times even when taking a bend at speed, significantly reducing over- and understeer in the process.

With its wide range of features and new technologies, the new BMW X3 has everything it takes to further extend its exceptional position as the premium offer in the segment. Specific modifications at the front, rear and side give the
new BMW X3 even more dynamic character, while the interior is dominated by particularly sophisticated materials, flowing lines, and stylish colour schemes.

Even more significantly, additional driving dynamics on country roads, in city traffic and off the beaten track have been guaranteed by new power units delivering their muscle smoothly by way of BMW xDrive permanent all-wheel drive with variable power distribution.

The top petrol engines featured in the new BMW X3 are new generation straight-six petrol engines displacing 3.0 and 2.5 litres, respectively. Boasting a composite magnesium/aluminium crankcase, VALVETRONIC and bi-VANOS, these engines deliver respective maximum outputs of 200 kW (+ 30 kW over the previous engine) and 160 kW (+ 19 kW). Two diesel models, the X3 2.0d (110kW) and the X3 3.0d (160kW) are also available.

Even more effective and faster interaction of BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive with DSC Dynamic Stability Control and engine management is
ensured on all engine variants by Integrated Chassis Managements (ICM) with its optimised computer technology.

BMW’s optimally enhanced xDrive intelligent four-wheel drive technology ensures superior dynamics both on and off-road. An extended choice of driver assistance systems underlines the innovative character of the new BMW X5. With these versatile qualities, it presents itself as a modern,  further updated development of the Sports Activity Vehicle concept, which was established in 1999 with the launch of the first-generation BMW X5.

The design: Clear focus on enhanced sporting characteristics.

The BMW X5’s bodywork design is characterised by harmonious proportions, expressing both the powerful elegance and agility of the vehicle. The newly interpreted design vocabulary typical of BMW X models comprises above all the structure of the front apron and the position of the standard fog lamps, as well as a redesigned rear apron adopting the structure of the front end.

An increase in the percentage of front and rear end surfaces painted in body colour emphasises the on-road characteristics of the BMW X5, thereby reflecting the vehicle’s higher level of sportiness.

The engine range: Increased power output, optimised efficiency.

A completely revised engine range ensures that the BMW X5 will continue
to strengthen its leading role as the most dynamic vehicle in its segment.
The range comprises a V8 and a straight six-cylinder petrol power unit featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo and direct injection, as well as two versions of the latest generation of BMW six-cylinder diesel engines. Power output ranges from 180 kW to 300 kW.

In spite of significantly improved performance, fuel consumption and emission levels have been reduced by up to 10 percent, compared to their predecessors.

An eight-speed automatic transmission also contributes towards enhancing the efficiency, dynamics and motoring comfort of the new BMW X5.

new top-end diesel model to the extremely popular BMW X3 range. At
the same time, the new BMW X3 3.0d heralds not only the introduction of
a high-performance diesel power plant to the range, but also the
addition of colour-coded bumpers to the entire line-up. BMW X3 3.0d:
More Power, more performance. The BMW X3 3.0d is not only the most
powerful diesel-powered Sports Activity Vehicle in the BMW line-up in
terms of power to weight ratio, but also leads the entire class in
terms of both power and torque. Maximum output of the 3.0-litre
straight-six diesel is an impressive 160 kW. Peak torque, in turn, is
even more significant in a vehicle such as this, with a peak level of
480 Nm maintained consistently all the way from 1,750-2,750 rpm. This
impressive power is conveyed to the wheels in each case by six finely
tuned gears - via the only gearbox available in this derivative, a
six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic manual shift function.
Diesel engine with the second-generation common rail system. An
ultra-strong and economical alternative to the agile petrol engines in
the BMW X3 is the direct-injection diesel engine which has already made
a great name for itself as a genuine sports diesel in BMW saloons.
Perhaps the most important factor contributing to the engine's superior
power, dynamism and economy is BMW's second-generation common rail
system with significantly higher injection pressure and volume control:
Maximum system pressure is up from 1,350 to 1,600 bar, injecting fuel
even faster and ensuring an even better process of atomisation, in the
interest of extra power and greater fuel economy. A further point is
that this sophisticated injection process does not always compress the
entire amount of fuel delivered to maximum pressure, but only, thanks
to volume control, as much fuel as the engine needs at any given point
in time. The reduction in energy required by the high-pressure pump
achieved in this way makes a significant contribution in reducing fuel
consumption. The option to inject fuel up to four times in each
operating cycle solves the conflict of interests between output and
noise management: Double-pilot, main and post-injection improve the
entire process, the double-pilot phase making combustion even softer
and more harmonious while post-injection improves the oxidation of
particles and reduces the emission of harmful substances accordingly.
As a result, the X3 3.0d easily outperforms the EU 3 emission
standards, optimised blade geometry and the use of high-strength
materials improving turbine and compressor efficiency of the
turbo-charger once again.

Sani Pass. The new BMW X3, the world's first Sports Activity Vehicle
(SAV) in the midrange segment, is now available with a new entry-level
engine: Introducing the X3 2.0d, BMW is for the first time offering a
four-cylinder power unit in its SAVs suitable for offroad driving, thus
appealing to an even larger group of customers now able to enjoy the
special experience of driving an SAV. Displacing 2.0 litres, the
direct-injection common rail diesel of the latest generation develops
maximum output of 110 kW at 4000 rpm in the X3 and ensures dynamic
driving pleasure with maximum torque of 330 Nm available from just 2000
rpm. The superior fuel economy offered by the new model proves that
agility and economy are not a contradiction in terms on an
all-wheel-drive vehicle: The X3 2.0d consumes just 7.2 litres of diesel
fuel on 100 km in the European driving cycle. Upgraded once again, the
straight-four power unit in the new BMW X3 2.0d offers a level of
flexibility most impressive for a diesel. The latest generation of
common rail technology with injection pressure of up to 1600 bar serves
to provide the engine's high maximum torque of 330 Nm from a low speed
of just 2000 rpm, allowing the X3 to impressively convert the
particular benefits and strengths of BMW's new X3 all-wheel-drive
system into dynamic performance the driver really feels under all
conditions. The electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch
distributes drive power within fractions of a second between the two
axles, thus ensuring not only excellent traction, but also a fast
response coupled with a standard of all-wheel-drive agility never seen
before. Perfect harmony: driving dynamics, agility, and economy all in
one. The new BMW X3 2.0d is equally impressive in its performance:
Acceleration to 100 km/h is in 10.2 seconds, and in 4th gear the X3
2.0d accelerates from 80-120 km/h in a mere 8.3 seconds. Together with
top speed of 198 km/h, the new X3 2.0d thus offers all the merits of a
genuine BMW Sports Activity Vehicle. And the great news in this context
is that the economic engine and drivetrain allows this new SAV to cover
a staggering 875 km on just one tank in the EU combined cycle.
Six-speed gearbox featured as standard. Harmonising perfectly with the
two-litre power unit, the six-speed manual gearbox featured as standard
also helps to ensure efficient use of fuel combined with excellent
performance. First gear is conceived for maximum traction and pulling
power, which obviously benefits acceleration from a standstill and - a
particularly important feature in a vehicle of this class - ensures
superior qualities when setting off on a gradient or with a trailer.
The remaining five gears - with top speed coming in sixth gear - always
give the driver exactly the right gear ratio at all road and engine
speeds, the driver thus benefiting from superior torque and powerful
acceleration in every situation. And at the same time he - or she - can
drive the X3 in a relaxed, almost "lazy" style, without
foregoing too much agility. Again in that unique style typical of BMW,
the six-speed gearbox provides a very smooth and comfortable gearshift
with short and precise shift travel, further enhancing the dynamic

comes as standard running on 17-inch light-alloy rims in new design.
Like all BMW X3s, it is naturally fitted from the start with BMW's
"intelligent" xDrive all-wheel-drive system with an
electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch. Other features fitted
as standard are DSC Dynamic Stability Control, DBC Dynamic Brake

audio system, for example, is now able to play CDs with MP3 files.
Also, a child seat based on the ISOFIX standard can be fitted on the
front passenger's seat, with the airbag function being deactivated in
the process. The X3 2.0d carries a basic price tag of R345 000. The

side in an infinite adjustment process geared to the steering angle of
the vehicle. This adjusts the two bi-xenon headlight units as required
as a function of the steering angle, yaw rate and road speed, thus
illuminating bends ahead of the driver clearly and brightly. BMW
offers the particularly performance-minded purchaser of the X3 a special
Sports Package which, thanks to its specific suspension set-up, gives

will be available in Europe and North America from the beginning of
