The BMW X2 in South Africa

The BMW X2 is the car that first introduced the vehicle concept of a Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) for the premium compact segment. And now the even more distinctive, even sportier and even more forward-looking second generation is taking to the stage. Significantly larger dimensions and a pronounced coupé silhouette clearly showcase in its exterior design the development leap taken by the new BMW X2. The progressive character of the new model is also evident in the large spread of systems enabling automated driving and parking, and in the innovative digital services laid on by the new BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9.

The worldwide market launch will get underway in March 2024 with the BMW X2 M35i xDrive performance model (fuel consumption combined: 8.0 – 7.7 l/ 100 km [35.3 – 36.7 mpg imp]; CO₂ emissions combined: 181 – 174 g/km in the WLTP cycle; figures in NEDC cycle: – ), one other petrol option (the BMW X2 sDrive18i for South Africa) and one diesel model. The BMW iX2 will not be offered in South Africa. In the third quarter of 2024 a second fully electric variant and another diesel-engined example will be added to the line-up.

The new BMW X2 and new BMW iX2 will be produced flexibly on a single assembly line at BMW Group Plant Regensburg. The high-voltage batteries for the fully electric model variant are also made at the Regensburg site. The new BMW iX2 sees the BMW Group further accelerating the ramp-up of electric mobility. Added to which, the progressive premium character profile of the compact SAC is underscored by further advances in sustainability encompassing the complete vehicle lifecycle – from resource-preserving production through the use phase to subsequent recycling.

Exterior design: authentic Sports Activity Coupé with dynamic lines and a confident presence.

The new BMW X2 has a distinctive, visually expressive design showing clear differentiation from the brand’s compact Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), the BMW X1. As such, it is instantly identifiable as a pure-bred Sports Activity Coupé (SAC). Also characteristic of the new model are its dynamically stretched lines and a generous surface treatment. The new BMW X2 has grown by 194 millimetres in length over its predecessor to 4,554 millimetres, by 21 millimetres in width to 1,845 millimetres and by 64 millimetres in height to 1,590 millimetres. Plus, its increased wheelbase and wider tracks benefit space in both the five seats and the boot. The new X2 has a maximum load capacity of 560 – 1,470 litres, depending on the model variant. 

The model-specific, upright front end of the new BMW X2 exudes confidence and presence. Its defining elements are striking LED headlights and an almost hexagonal BMW kidney grille, which – in a first for the premium compact segment – can be specified as an option with BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting. Also on the options list are Adaptive LED Headlights with non-dazzling matrix high beam.

The roofline, which flows along an unbroken path into the rear end, creates a slim, coupé-shaped silhouette and proportions in the signature style of an SAC from BMW. At the rear, the prominently flared wheel arches and muscular shoulders come to the fore. The horizontal contours of the model-specific rear light design further enrich the sporting flavour, as do a Gurney-style spoiler and an eye-catching rear apron.

M-specific design features such as the two pairs of exhaust tailpipes integrated into the rear apron give the BMW X2 M35i xDrive a particularly dynamic aura. An M Sport package will be standard on the 18i variant in South Africa and likewise brings aerodynamically optimised exterior details. Also on the options list is the M Sport package Pro, which adds extended M High-gloss Shadowline exterior trim, M lights Shadowline, an M rear spoiler and an M Sport braking system with red-painted callipers, among other features.

Customers can choose from two solid and eleven metallic paint finishes for the exterior of their new BMW X2, including the new Fire Red metallic variant. Two Frozen shades from BMW Individual and a broad spectrum of BMW Individual special paint finishes are also available.

Premium ambience with a sporting flavour; impressive functionality.

The interior of the new BMW X2 has a modern premium ambience with sporting touches. The slender instrument panel, housing the BMW Curved Display, is joined in the cabin by a “floating” armrest with integral control panel. In the front section of the centre console are two cup holders and a smartphone tray with indirect illumination and wireless charging.

The newly developed seats are also offered in the Veganza perforated variant and Vernasca leather with attractive quilting as alternatives to the standard cloth upholstery. Customers can also specify sport seats, electric seat adjustment with memory function, lumbar support and a massage function. Further improvements have been made to both acoustic comfort and occupant protection. Standard equipment now includes an interaction airbag between the driver’s seat and front passenger seat.

Expanded standard equipment, targeted individualisation.

Two-zone automatic climate control, the navigation system BMW Maps and a Sport leather steering wheel all come as standard in the new BMW X2, as do automatic tailgate operation, four USB-C ports and a 12V power socket in both the centre console and the boot. The number of driver assistance systems and digital services available has also increased significantly over the predecessor model.

Newly structured equipment packages enable targeted individualisation of the car. Among the options available to enhance its premium character are a mirror package, steering wheel heating and the Harman Kardon Sound System. A highlight of the options list is the panoramic glass sunroof, whose dark-tinted glass surface extends right up to the windscreen and the roof frame on either side, and a long way back in a single section into the rear part of the roof. An electrically operated trailer tow hitch can also be ordered as an option.

BMW X2 M35i xDrive performance model available from launch.

A performance model available from the launch of the new BMW X2 is set to bring the compact SAC’s dynamic nature even more prominently to the fore. The new BMW X2 M35i xDrive, with its hallmark M design and handling characteristics, is an alluring proposition. Its 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine produces maximum output 233 kW.

The new BMW X2 M35i xDrive sprints to 100 km/h from rest in 5.4 seconds. M-specific chassis tuning teams up with BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive to deliver sublime performance characteristics. Its standard adaptive M suspension enhances both agility and long-distance comfort. M Compound brakes are offered as an option.

Efficient petrol and diesel engines, seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch as standard.

All of the combustion engines available for the new BMW X2 link up as standard with a seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch.

Optimum blend of agility and ride comfort, 21-inch light-alloy wheels available for a compact BMW model for the first time.

The compact SAC’s sophisticated chassis technology produces a perfectly harmonious balance between sporty, agile handling on the one hand and long-distance comfort on the other. All the tools required here are provided by a body construction that reduces weight while increasing rigidity, a long wheelbase, wider tracks than the predecessor model, and targeted upgrades to the single-joint spring strut axle at the front and the three-link rear axle. Near-actuator wheel slip limitation is fitted as standard in the new BMW X2, benefiting both traction and directional stability. Other new features include the integrated braking system and the extra, lift-related damping at the front axle. The optional adaptive M suspension features frequency-selective damping, sport steering and a 15‑millimetre drop in ride height. Light-alloy wheels range in size from 18 to 21 inches.

State-of-the-art driver assistance systems for greater comfort and safety.

The standard and optional assistance systems for automated driving and parking available in the new BMW X2 increase comfort and safety both in everyday driving and on longer journeys. Standard features include the latest version of the front collision warning system, Cruise Control with brake function, Speed Limit Info and Lane Departure Warning with lane return. The Parking Assistant including Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing Assistant also forms part of the standard equipment roster.

The line-up of optional features, meanwhile, includes the Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Active Navigation, the exit warning function and the BMW Head-Up Display, as well as the Surround View, Remote 3D View, BMW Drive Recorder and Remote Theft Recorder functions. Existing functions can be upgraded by means of the Remote Software Upgrades facility, which also makes it possible to add new functions.

The new BMW Operating System 9 and BMW Digital Premium.

The latest version of the BMW iDrive display and control/operation system featuring QuickSelect rapid-access tech is fitted in the new BMW X2. Based on BMW Operating System 9, it is packaged together with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, meaning it has been carefully geared to operation using the touchscreen and natural language. BMW Operating System 9 also paves the way for a highly customisable selection of additional digital services. With BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades, customers can enjoy a free one-month trial of selected functions, after which they are able to add them for a specific period of time. The new BMW Digital Premium offering can also be obtained from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store for the new BMW X2.

The optional BMW Digital Premium means customers can enjoy in-car use of all the apps available in their country, e.g. for music streaming, news or gaming, on a subscription basis, and the apps available from the BMW ConnectedDrive Store, including music streaming.

The Augmented View function is available as an optional add-on for the cloud-based BMW Maps navigation system. In addition to this, a Personal eSIM designed for 5G mobile technology, the BMW Digital Key Plus, the BMW ID functionality and standard smartphone integration using both Apple CarPlay^® and Android Auto™ are also all available in the new BMW X2.

The Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) fuses individual lifestyle attributes with modern functionality and the driving pleasure for which BMW is renowned. Its powerfully expressive front end, the flowing lines of its flanks and the BMW logo on each C-pillar recalling classical BMW coupés from years past also bring visual uniqueness to the BMW X model family. And from the end of the second quarter of 2022, the new BMW X2 Edition GoldPlay will introduce a heightened sense of extrovert appeal to urban areas and beyond. The new special edition underscores the singular character of the BMW X2 and combines equipment highlights, such as the extended M High-gloss Shadow Line, the “X2” logo projection from the driver’s side mirror or the optionally available Adaptive LED Headlights including a four-segment matrix high-beam headlight function, turning lights and adaptive light distribution, with exclusive exterior details and special interior appointments that add an extra layer to an already richly engaging driving experience.

The new BMW X2 Edition GoldPlay will be offered in the super-sporting BMW X2 M35i in South Africa.

Stylish extravagance with accents in Galvanic Gold.
The new BMW X2 Edition GoldPlay combines its exclusive exterior and interior appointments with the design and equipment features found in X2 variants with M Sport specification. M Sport suspension with a 10-millimetre lower ride height and M Sport steering optimise the dynamic potential of the compact SAC. Added to which, a large, three-section lower air intake in the front apron, front and rear bumper panels with inserts in Dark Shadow, wheel arch trim and lower door edging in body colour, M High-gloss Shadow Line trim and the M Aerodynamics package give the car a muscular appearance. The surrounds for the side windows, window recess covers, B-pillar trim and embellisher surrounds on the C-pillar, mirror cover panels and mirror frames (incl. mirror triangle) are finished in High-gloss Black on the special-edition car, as are the exhaust tailpipe finishers and border for the BMW logo on the tailgate.

Adorning the front of the car is the M Mesh kidney grille in High-gloss Black whose mesh structure is inspired by racing cars. The styling extravagance that marks out this special-edition X2 is headlined by the use of the exclusive colour shade Galvanic Gold for the kidney grille surround and exterior mirror caps. Eye-catching inserts in Galvanic Gold also adorn the 19-inch M aerodynamic wheels of the special-edition car. 20-inch M aerodynamic wheels are available as an option, and likewise come with Galvanic Gold inserts.

New exterior colours, striking foliation.
The exterior colour San Remo Green metallic is reserved exclusively for the GoldPlay Edition. This is the first time this colour shade has been available for the BMW X2. Customers can also specify their cars in Alpine White non-metallic, M Misano Blue metallic, Sapphire Black metallic, Skyscraper Grey metallic and the BMW Individual paint finishes Storm Bay metallic, Frozen Black metallic and Frozen Pure Grey metallic. The Galvanic Gold side foliation on the doors and the front and rear side panels are another exclusive addition.

On cars ordered with either of the two matt Frozen paint finishes, both the foliation and the Galvanic Gold accents for the BMW kidney grille and exterior mirror caps are deleted. The grille surround is instead finished in Black and the mirror caps are painted in body colour. This design variant can also be chosen with the other exterior colour shades.

The interior: sporting ambience with innovative details.
M-specific equipment features combine with innovative details to create a sporty and exclusive ambience inside the BMW X2 Edition GoldPlay. The M leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons, anthracite-coloured headliner, M stainless steel pedals, M driver’s footrest and car key with distinctive M identifier underscore the sporting instincts of the special edition. Judiciously placed accents create a stylistic connection with the exterior design. These include door sill strips which have a surface structure derived from the BMW kidney grille’s mesh design and bear “Edition” lettering in Galvanic Gold. Around the instrument panel on the front passenger side of the cabin, the Dark Graphite matt trim strips – likewise a bespoke design for the GoldPlay Edition – display a graphic referencing the exterior foliation. For the first time, a laser engraving technique is used, which applies the graphic in the colour Golden Mica metallic on the surface of the strip and seals it with clear varnish.

Another highlight of the bespoke interior appointments for the special-edition model are the M sport seats with particularly prominent side bolsters and integral head restraints for the driver and front passenger. These are trimmed in an exclusive Dakota leather trim variant. The black leather surfaces of the driver’s seat and front passenger seat are perforated through the centre section of the backrests. Contrast stitching and piping in Giallo Oro – a golden yellow colour shade – add a distinctive flourish. Plus, the M sport seats also feature a High-gloss Black border for the cut-out below the head restraints and a BMW M GmbH logo flag label on the backrest piping.

The special-edition model also comes with gold-coloured contrast stitching for the instrument panel, centre console, and outer and centre armrests of the front seats. The edge binding for the anthracite-coloured floor mats is likewise in Giallo Oro. 

Extensive standard equipment.
The ultra-sporty BMW X2 M35i employs a 225 kW four-cylinder engine with TwinPower Turbo technology, an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, a mechanical M Sport differential at the front axle and the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system to deliver standout performance.

The specific design and equipment features of the BMW X2 Edition GoldPlay enhance the premium character of the compact SAC to visually stunning effect. Its extensive standard equipment comprises items such as LED headlights with integral bad weather light, automatic tailgate operation, two-zone automatic climate control and a lighting package (including outside door handle light, ground lighting, exterior mirror lighting and door entry light, plus an “X2” logo projection from the driver’s side exterior mirror). This begins at the front with full HD technology for the main headlights and fog lights and continues with the double kidney grille in Cerium Grey and the newly designed side air intakes of the same colour at the front for best possible cooling of brakes and engine. The exterior mirrors have been upgraded by special caps, likewise in Cerium Grey. At the rear, the X2 M35i boasts a distinctive M rear spoiler and demonstrates its fascinating sovereignty with an M Sport exhaust system with two tailpipes (each 100 mm in diameter). An exceptionally sporty look also dominates the interior. As with the exterior design, the basis is again the M Sport Package. Moreover, the X2 M35i features as standard an M Sport leather steering wheel with shift paddles and door entry trims at the front bearing the lettering “M35i”. The optional M sports seats at the front are a novelty. They offer not only perfect lateral support for both driver and front passenger in sharp bends, but also the highest level of comfort and safety through integrated headrests. The M sports seats are available in the following three different designs:  FabricTrigon/Alcantara combination in black with blue accents, Leather Dakota Magmared, perforated with black accents and Leather Dakota black perforated. For the first time Exclusive M sports seats ensure perfect seating comfort and lateral support.

An exceptionally sporty look also dominates the interior. As with the exterior design, the basis is again the M Sport Package. Moreover, the X2 M35i features as standard an M Sport leather steering wheel with shift paddles and door entry trims at the front bearing the lettering “M35i”. The optional M sports seats at the front are a novelty. They offer not only perfect lateral support for both driver and front passenger in sharp bends, but also the highest level of comfort and safety through integrated headrests. The M sports seats are available in the following three different designs:  FabricTrigon/Alcantara combination in black with blue accents, Leather Dakota Magmared, perforated with black accents and Leather Dakota black perforated. Matching seatbelts in an M design are also on offer.

Trend-setting digital competence for state-of-the-art technologies.

In addition to the uncompromisingly sporty orientation of both drive system and design, the BMW X2 M35i also demonstrates BMW’s trend-setting digital competence in the areas of operation and networking. For instance, the full-colour BMW Head-Up Display is among the optionally available features. It offers a display range that is unprecedented in this vehicle segment. If desired, the latest generation of BMW ConnectedDrive and the new BMW Connected App can be fitted. Optional functions such as the wireless use of Apple CarPlay set further highlights. Driver assistant systems include, for example, camera-based technologies such as the traffic jam assistant for less tiring driving in dense stop-and-go traffic or the optional parking assistant.

Start of production is November 2018, which means that the BMW X2 M35i will be available in South Africa in the first quarter of 2019.

Highlights.

• The new BMW X2 will celebrate its market premiere in March 2018.
• The new BMW X2 appeals primarily to a young and young-at-heart, urban and active target group who are keen to see their personal character reflected on the road through an emotionally-engaging car.
• The Sports Activity Coupe is a BMW with a standalone character. Its head-turning design combines the discreet robustness of a BMW X model with the athletic potency of a coupe.
• Local customers can choose from the BMW X2 M Sport and M Sport X models. The latter brings together design elements from BMW M and the BMW X family. Separate lines are not available for the BMW X2.
• A host of design details underscore the distinctive character of the BMW X2. These include the BMW roundel on the C-pillars and the styling of the kidney grille, whose outline is wider at its base than at its top (for the first time on a modern BMW).
• Available for the first time on a BMW are the exterior colour shades Galvanic Gold metallic and Misano Blue metallic, plus perforated Dakota leather in Magma Red and the Micro Hexagon fabric Anthracite/Alcantara combination in Black with M piping and yellow contrast stitching.
• Two engine/transmission variants will be offered from launch: the BMW X2 sDrive20i petrol model with 141 kW (fuel consumption combined: 5.9 – 5.5 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 134 – 126 g/km)*, plus the X2 xDrive20d diesel variant with 140 kW (fuel consumption combined: 4.8 – 4.6 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 126 – 121 g/km)* The diesel car comes as standard with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive and the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The petrol model is fitted with the sporty seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission.
• The options list for the BMW X2 includes the latest generation of BMW ConnectedDrive and the most recent update of the BMW Connected App. Optional functions such as Apple CarPlay and an array of driver assistance systems serve up a connected driving experience. Among the optional equipment features offered exclusively by the BMW X2 in this segment is the full-colour BMW Head-Up Display.

The fuel consumption and CO2 emissions figures shown were determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable at the time of type approval. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers the different size of the selected wheels and tires. The values of the vehicles labelled with (**) are already based on the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to ensure the comparison between the vehicles. With respect to these vehicles, for vehicle-related taxes or other duties based (at least inter alia) on CO2 emissions, the CO2 values may differ to the values stated here (depending on national legislation).

The CO2 efficiency specifications are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the Pkw-EnVKV, and based (for classification) on the fuel consumption and CO2 values as per the NEDC cycle.
