Midrand. With its robust appearance and functional
versatility, the new BMW X1 embodies an authentic experience of
freedom and independence in day-to-day driving and on longer journeys.
The interior’s progressive design and sophisticated ambience, and the
much broader selection of standard equipment compared to the outgoing
model, serve to underline its deeply embedded premium character.

Initially available in a choice of one petrol and one diesel engine,
these models will be followed in early 2023 by the all-electric BMW
iX1 xDrive30e.* The X1 sDrive18i and sDrive18d are linked to a
seven-speed Steptronic transmission with double clutch as standard,
and their drive power channelled to the road via the front wheels.

Design: modern surface treatment, increased visual presence
and robust looks in unmistakable BMW X model style.

The surface treatment, lines and classy exterior design details of
the BMW X1 display its Sports Activity Vehicle identity more clearly
than ever in its third model generation. Distinctive design features
include the powerful proportions, almost square wheel arch contours
and the signature BMW X model styling of the front and rear ends.

The upright front end of the new BMW X1 gives it a much greater sense
of presence, with slim LED headlights, a large, almost square BMW
kidney grille, X-shaped lines radiating out to the sides and
eye-catching chrome strips in the lower air intake serving as its
defining elements. Adaptive LED headlights with matrix high beam,
pulsating turn indicators and variable light distribution are
available as an option.

Expressively sculpted surfaces and a long roofline are the
distinguishing features of the new model’s dynamically stretched
silhouette. When viewed from the rear, the slim tailgate window,
horizontal lines, striking LED lights and flared wheel arches produce
the typical SAV look.

The robust aura of the new BMW X1 can be intensified to great effect
with the specific design elements of the standard xLine model, which
include stylish underbody protection. The M Sport model also offered
as an alternative to base specification places the focus firmly on
dynamic driving pleasure with features such as its large cooling air inlets.

All model variants come as standard with 18-inch light-alloy wheels
as fitted on xLine and M Sport cars, although these models are also
available with 19-inch and – in a first for the BMW X1 – 20‑inch
wheels. Customers can choose from two solid and ten metallic shades
for the exterior paint finish – including a Frozen paint option from
BMW Individual for the first time.

Interior: progressive ambience, versatile space.

A raised seating position and a progressive premium ambience styled
on the BMW iX help to create a distinctive driving experience inside
the compact SAV. The key elements of the cabin’s redesign are the
slender instrument panel, the BMW Curved Display, the “floating”
armrest with integral control panel and the smartphone tray with
indirect illumination at the front of the centre console.

The newly developed seats are available with the option of the
standard Sensatec perforated or Vernasca leather upholstery. Also
found on the options list are sport seats, electric seat adjustment
with memory function and lumbar support including massage function.
Improvements have been made to both acoustic comfort and occupant
protection. The integrated passive safety concept now includes a new
interaction airbag between the front seats.

The rear compartment of the new BMW X1 includes three full-sized
seats offering a notable improvement in seating comfort. The 40:20:40
split rear seat backrests can be folded down or adjusted to a
different angle to expand the boot capacity. The fore-and-aft
adjustment of the rear seats available as an option for the purely
combustion-engined models provides even greater versatility. Boot
capacity can be increased from 540 to a maximum of 1,600 litres. The
trailer tow hitch available to order as an option for the new BMW X1
is now operated electrically at the touch of a button.

Two-zone automatic climate control, Sport leather steering
wheel and BMW Maps as standard.

The BMW Maps navigation system, a Sport leather steering wheel,
intelligent two-zone automatic climate control and a rain sensor with
automatic headlight activation all come as standard in the new
generation of the BMW X1, as do four USB-C ports, two 12V power
sockets and a far greater number of driver assistance systems compared
with the outgoing model.

Restructured equipment packages enable targeted individualisation of
the car. The premium character can be turned up another notch by
optional features such as the mirror package, ambient lighting,
panoramic glass sunroof and Harman Kardon Sound System.

All-rounder offering optimum blend of agility and ride comfort.

The market launch line-up comprises the new BMW X1 sDrive18i (fuel
consumption combined: 6.5 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 148 g/km
in WLTP cycle) powered by a 115 kW three-cylinder engine, and the BMW
X1 sDrive18d (fuel consumption combined: 5.0 l/100 km; CO2 emissions
combined: 132 g/km in WLTP cycle) whose four-cylinder diesel unit
generates 110 kW.

Irrespective of the drive system fitted, all new BMW X1 models offer
well-resolved handling characteristics in any situation and deliver
the driving experience for which the brand is renowned. The compact
all-rounder’s sophisticated chassis technology produces a perfectly
harmonious balance between sporty, agile handling on the one hand and
long-distance comfort on the other. All the tools required here are
provided by a body construction that reduces weight while increasing
rigidity, a long wheelbase, wider tracks than the predecessor model,
and targeted upgrades to the single-joint spring strut axle at the
front and the three-link rear axle.

Near-actuator wheel slip limitation is fitted as standard in the new
BMW X1, benefiting both traction and directional stability. Other new
features include the integrated braking system and the extra,
lift-related damping at the front axle. The optional adaptive
M suspension features frequency-selective damping, sport steering and
a 15-millimetre drop in ride height.

Wide variety of systems for automated driving and parking.

The technological advances made in the new BMW X1 compared with the
outgoing model are also evident in the far greater variety of
automated driving and parking systems available to use. Standard
features include Cruise Control with brake function and the
front-collision warning system. The Parking Assistant including
Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing Assistant also forms part of the
standard equipment roster.

The list of optional features, meanwhile, includes the Steering and
Lane Control Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go
function, exit warning function and BMW Head-Up Display, as well as
the Surround View, Remote 3D View, BMW Drive Recorder and Remote Theft
Recorder functions.

Standard: BMW Operating System 8 and the new BMW iDrive.

The new BMW X1 also treats its occupants to the latest-generation BMW
iDrive multi-sensory vehicle experience in the form of the
standard-fit BMW Live Cockpit Professional Plus. Based on BMW
Operating System 8, it comprises the BMW Curved Display with its
state-of-the-art graphics and menu structure along with the BMW
Intelligent Personal Assistant that has now gained additional skills.
The fully digital screen grouping is formed by the 10.25-inch
information display and the control display with a screen diagonal of
10.7 inches. The new BMW iDrive is geared purposefully to providing
intuitive touch and voice control. The broad-based digitalisation of
the interior enables the number of physical buttons, controls and
switches required for operation to be significantly reduced.

The new My Modes combine individually selectable vehicle settings
with matching experience worlds for the interior. The Augmented View
function is available as an optional add-on for the cloud-based BMW
Maps navigation system. An interior camera makes it possible to take
snapshots of the occupants or have images of the interior sent to the
customer’s smartphone. In addition to this, a Personal eSIM designed
for 5G mobile technology, the BMW Digital Key Plus, the BMW ID
functionality and smartphone integration using both Apple CarPlay® and
Android Auto™ are also all available in the new BMW X1.

Munich. The countdown for one of the most magical
festivals is over. The first of the three festival weekends kicked off
on 15 July. After an absence of almost two years, Tomorrowland is
finally back – bigger and better than ever.

BMW AG has been pushing an international expansion of its music
strategy since 2019, with music being one of the most important
pillars in the global marketing mix of BMW. “Music inspires, shapes
memories, and encourages people to come together. It speaks one
global, emotional language,” says Stefan Ponikva, Head of Brand
Communication and Experience. “As a relationship brand with 'joy' at
its core, Tomorrowland is a perfect match for us as a brand engagement.”

The partnership between BMW Belux and Tomorrowland, up to now
only a local one, will be expanded to the European level, creating
unique opportunities for even more activation campaigns. The musical
journey began at Brussels Airport in mid-June with the extraordinary
theme “The Magical Forest of Joy” by BMW. A large-scale call-to-action
campaign with a staggering reach of more than 15 million followers was
also launched via the Tomorrowland platform.

A message of joy and sustainability for “Tomorrow People”.

A unique design for a unique car and a unique festival! What makes
the new all-electric BMW iX1 x Steve Aoki particularly special is that
it carries with it all the wishes and aspirations of festival
visitors. A dedicated website was set up just for this purpose, where
a personal “Message of Joy” – a message, a feeling or a positive
thought about the future – can be shared with the world: #UNITEDINJOY.

Steve Aoki, two-time Grammy-nominated music producer, artist,
fashion designer, entrepreneur, and NFT visionary was the co-creator
of the fancy car wrap for the BMW iX1, based on these “Messages of Joy”.

The unique design of the new BMW iX1 x Steve Aoki will be on
display in “The Magical Forest of Joy” by BMW during the three
weekends of the festival. The BMW stand is open to all visitors where
they can pose for photos and videos with the all-electric BMW iX1.

Press Contact: Hailey Philander
Tel: +27-71-666-2070
E-mail: hailey.philander@bmw.co.za

Press Release,X1,U11,Product,BMW

Munich.

At launch in October 2022, there will initially be a choice of one
petrol and one diesel engine. These will link up with a seven-speed
Steptronic transmission with double clutch as standard, and their
drive power will be channelled to the road via the front wheels. This
starting duo will be followed by the all-electric BMW iX1 xDrive30.
The new BMW X1 will be built at BMW Group Plant Regensburg, where
models with combustion engines, plug-in hybrid systems and
all-electric drive will all roll off a single assembly line for the
first time.

The BMW iX1 will bring the experience of locally emission-free
driving pleasure to a vehicle segment enjoying worldwide growth,
making it accessible to a very wide target audience. The compact SAV
powered by the latest BMW eDrive technology will therefore give a
major boost to the accelerated ramp-up of electric mobility. The
improvements in sustainability compared to the predecessor model can
be partly attributed not just to the wide-ranging electrification
measures, but also the increased use of green energy, both for
production and in the supply chain, and the greater quantities of
secondary raw materials and natural materials used.

intelligent two-zone automatic climate control and a rain sensor with
automatic headlight activation all come as standard in the new
generation of the BMW X1, as do four USB-C ports, two 12V power
sockets and a far greater number of driver assistance systems compared
with the outgoing model.

Restructured equipment packages enable targeted individualisation of
the car. The premium character can be turned up another notch by
optional features such as the mirror package, ambient lighting,
panoramic glass sunroof and Harman Kardon Sound System.

BMW iX1: a new era of driving pleasure in the compact SAV begins.

The BMW iX1 xDrive30 is the first all-wheel-drive electric car
introduced by the brand in the premium compact segment. Two highly
integrated drive units at the front and rear axles deliver a combined
output of 230 kW (taking the temporary boost effect into account), and
post overall torque of 494 Nm. The electric all-wheel-drive system
ensures supreme traction and directional stability in all situations.
The BMW iX1 xDrive30 completes the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 5.7 seconds.

The fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology additionally comprises the
car’s highly efficient charging technology, including the improved
charging software also found in the BMW i7, and a high-voltage battery
positioned flat within the vehicle’s underbody, whose high energy
density gives the car a range of 413 – 438 kilometres. (The figures
relating to output, performance, energy consumption and range for the
BMW iX1 xDrive30 are predicted values based on the car’s current stage
of development.)

In the launch line-up is the new BMW X1 sDrive18i
(fuel consumption combined: 6.5 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 148
g/km in WLTP cycle; NEDC cycle: – ) powered by a 115 kW three-cylinder engine.

The four-cylinder diesel unit in the new BMW X1 sDrive18d (fuel
consumption combined: 5.0 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 132 g/km
in WLTP cycle; NEDC cycle: – ) generates 110 kW.

All-rounder offering optimum blend of agility and ride comfort.

Standard
features include Cruise Control with brake function and the
front-collision warning system, which is now also capable of detecting
oncoming traffic when turning left (in countries where vehicles drive
on the right) and pedestrians and cyclists when turning right. The
Parking Assistant including Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing
Assistant also forms part of the standard equipment roster.

The list of optional features, meanwhile, includes the Steering and
Lane Control Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go
function, Active Navigation, exit warning function and BMW Head-Up
Display, as well as the Surround View, Remote 3D View, BMW Drive
Recorder and Remote Theft Recorder functions. Existing functions can
be upgraded by means of the Remote Software Upgrades facility, which
also makes it possible to add new functions (availability depends on
the hardware fitted in the vehicle and the market conditions).

Standard: BMW Operating System 8 and the new BMW iDrive.

The new BMW X1 also treats its occupants to the latest-generation BMW
iDrive multi-sensory vehicle experience in the form of the
standard-fit BMW Live Cockpit Professional. Based on BMW Operating
System 8, it comprises the BMW Curved Display with its
state-of-the-art graphics and menu structure along with the BMW

The new BMW X1.

<pp:caseid>812426</pp:caseid><pp:summary>Model update raises desirability of BMW X1 another notch.</pp:summary>

Bold, sporty, visually striking, the new BMW X1 (fuel consumption
combined: 6.8 – 4.1 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 155 – 107 g/km*)
adds another chapter to the Sports Activity Vehicle’s ongoing success story.

The new model update makes the BMW X1 an even more desirable
proposition. Key to its increased appeal are pronounced design
revisions, a high level of versatility and a host of cutting-edge
equipment features. Beneath the surface, meanwhile, powerful yet
extremely efficient three- and four-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo
engines and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive are indicative
of the driving pleasure on tap in the latest X1.

The design: eye-catching and sporty.
The current BMW X1 wasted no time post-launch in winning over
customers with its distinctive design. And the model update ensures
the compact Sports Activity Vehicle now cuts an even more handsome figure.

The X1’s new look is immediately clear, with the most prominent
revisions found at the front and rear. Each of the model variants –
from the base BMW X1 to xLine, Sport Line and M Sport – has been given
a standalone visual presence tailored precisely to its character
profile. The BMW X1 M Sport is a particularly athletic-looking option,
courtesy not least of lowered M Sport suspension, BMW Individual
High-gloss Shadow Line trim with extended features and the M
Aerodynamics package.

The new BMW X1 exudes a more dominant, imposing aura at the front
end, in particular. Here, a larger BMW grille – the kidneys now
merging in the centre – links up with new Adaptive LED headlights
including sharper light iconography and a bumper with integrated LED
foglamps and larger air intakes. The rear end of the X1 also houses
new stylistic features. For example, the new inlay in the body-colour
rear apron adopts the car’s main body colour. This new feature is
included as standard and lends the rear end of the BMW X1 an even
stronger sense of inherent class and coherence.

Another highlight can be found on the driver’s-side exterior mirror,
which projects a two-tone LED “X1” image when the car is unlocked.
This is far from just a visual trick; it also makes getting into and
out of the BMW X1 that much easier.

The attractive new design of the X1 is further enhanced by three new
exterior colours – Jucaro Beige metallic, Misano Blue metallic
(exclusively for the M Sport model) and the ultra-exclusive BMW
Individual Storm Bay metallic – and four new wheel designs.

The driving experience: powerful and efficient.
The model update is also an exercise in future-proofing for the
BMW X1. At launch, all the petrol and diesel engines will meet the
EU6d‑temp exhaust emissions standard; the BMW X1 sDrive16d and BMW X1
xDrive25d already fulfil the EU6d norm. The power generated by
the efficient yet sporty three- and four-cylinder engines is
translated – via BMW xDrive intelligent all‑wheel drive or a
cutting-edge front-wheel-drive configuration, depending on the model
variant – into dynamic performance on the road and supreme driving
pleasure over rough terrain.

The BMW X1 sDrive16d, available with either a manual six-speed
gearbox or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, is particularly
efficient. In manual guise, the combined fuel consumption of the 85 kW
model is just 4.4 – 4.1 l/100 km, while CO2 emissions stand
at a combined 116 – 107 g/km*. If the seven-speed dual-clutch
transmission is specified, the figures are 4.4 – 4.2 l/100 km and 116 – 109 g CO2/km.*

Majoring on sports performance is the BMW X1 xDrive25d (fuel
consumption combined: 5.2 – 4.9 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 136
– 128 g/km*), which develops maximum output of 170 kW and torque of
450 Nm. Whatever the situation, the xDrive25d radiates BMW’s signature
driving pleasure. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a rapid 6.6 seconds.

The BMW X1 xDrive25i is one of the top-performing models in the range
in terms of dynamics. Its 170 kW engine teams up with the precise
eight-speed Steptronic transmission to propel the car down the road
with unbridled vigour. It epitomises the
multi-faceted sporting ability which distinguishes all BMW X1 models.
The xDrive25i races from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds.
Combined fuel consumption comes in at 6.8 – 6.3 l/100 km,
combined CO2 emissions are 155 – 144 g/km*.

The updated BMW X1 line-up now comprises 16 engine/transmission
combinations, ensuring all customers have a wealth of possibilities
from which to choose.

The suspension technology of the BMW X1 provides all models with the
fleet-footed agility familiar to customers, delivers precisely
controllable handling and imbues the car with sublime overall
dynamics. The xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system available for
many of the models in the range splits drive torque between the front
and rear axles to suit the situation at hand. The result is a
combination of supreme traction, excellent directional stability and
dynamic élan in all weather and road conditions.

Under starter’s orders: the BMW X1 xDrive25e.
The impressive efficiency of the petrol and diesel versions
offered for the new BMW X1 merely whets the appetite for the arrival
of the first BMW X1 with plug-in hybrid drive system. The debut of the
new model next year will see BMW stepping up the electrification of
its vehicle line-up once again. The BMW X1 xDrive25e (petrol
consumption combined: from 2.0 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: from
43 g/km**) – due to enter production in March 2020 – is fitted with
the latest, fourth-generation BMW battery technology, which gives the
battery a gross energy content of 9.7 kWh. As a result, the
plug-in-hybrid BMW X1 can cover more than 50 km** on electric power alone.

Equipment: versatility and connectivity.
So the driving qualities of the BMW X1 on the road are hugely
persuasive – and the same goes for the versatility of its interior.
Advanced technology joins forces with generous levels of space and
countless smart and functionally adept solutions.

The high quality standards of the BMW X1 are evident, for example, in
the new contrast stitching on the instrument panel, which is black on
its upper section and adopts the colour of the interior upholstery
lower down. The contrast stitching is available for the xLine, Sport
Line and M Sport models. In these variants of the X1, the floor mats
also gain coloured edging and contrast stitching for the edging. The
BMW X1 can also be ordered with a choice of three new upholstery variants.

One of the highlights of the BMW X1 interior is the Control Display.
A centrally mounted 6.5-inch screen is included as standard. If a
navigation system is specified, either an 8.8-inch or the new
10.25-inch Touch Control Display – which can be operated using the BMW
iDrive Controller, voice control or touchscreen technology – comes as
part of the package.

The Control Display represents the ideal platform on which to explore
the BMW X1’s richly varied infotainment offering and access the
digital services from BMW ConnectedDrive. The latest versions of these
are available as an option in the BMW X1.

The remarkable versatility of the BMW X1 is not confined to all
things digital; its interior can also be adapted to individual
requirements. For example, the rear seats can be folded down in three
sections (40:20:40) and, as an option, slide forward by up to 13 cm.
Options such as automatic tailgate operation and Comfort Access –
which team up to enable hands-free tailgate opening and closing –
raise convenience levels another notch.

Local availability

The new X1 will be available in South Africa from September
2019. Local engines, specifications and pricing will be confirmed in
due course.

Rijswijk/Munich. As of August 2017, VDL Nedcar in
Born in the Netherlands will begin production of the BMW X1. The move
was jointly announced today by the BMW Group and the VDL Group. VDL
Nedcar will share production of the BMW X1 for the world market with
BMW Group Plant Regensburg. VDL Nedcar has built three MINI models in
Born since 2014.The BMW X1 will be the fourth BMW Group model to roll
off the production lines at VDL Nedcar.

Strong global demand for the BMW X1 requires additional capacity to
supplement production at the BMW Group plant in Regensburg, where the
second generation of this successful model has been manufactured since
July 2015. With eight different models built on a single line,
production volumes at BMW Group Plant Regensburg have risen
significantly in recent years. As a consequence of this successful
growth, the plant will share BMW X1 production with VDL Nedcar. Over
its lifecycle, the main volume of the BMW X1 will still be produced in
Regensburg, however.

BMW Group Plant Regensburg and VDL Nedcar are partner plants since
early 2014 and have established a close and successful collaboration.
VDL Nedcar has many years of experience manufacturing high-quality
cars and is a trusted and reliable partner for the BMW Group
production network. The involvement of VDL Nedcar as a contract
manufacturer gives the BMW Group the flexibility to respond quickly to
market demand for the BMW X1.

Peter Haug, Marketing Director of BMW Group Netherlands: “In the
Netherlands, demand for BMW X models has been very strong, especially
for the BMW X1. Last year, a total of 1,946 units were registered,
making it the best sales result since the first generation was
launched in 2009. In 2016, no less than 62.2 percent of all X models
sold in the Netherlands (3,131 in total) were BMW X1s, which means
that one in six BMW models sold was a BMW X1.”

Strong cooperation

Since 2014, VDL Nedcar has produced various MINI models, starting
with the three-door MINI in split production with BMW Group Plant
Oxford. The second model, the MINI Convertible, is exclusively built
in Born. On 2 November 2016, VDL Nedcar also began exclusive
production of the new MINI Countryman. In March 2017, VDL Nedcar will
start production of the new MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4, MINI’s
first plug-in hybrid, and the sporty MINI John Cooper Works Countryman
with 170 kW (231 hp).

BMW X models popular worldwide

In 2016, BMW sold a total of 2,003,359 vehicles (an increase of 5.2
per cent compared to 2015), of which 644,922 were X models (an
increase of 22.3 per cent compared to 2015). One in three BMW models
sold in 2016 was an X model.

Press Contact: Edward Makwana
Tel: +27-12-522-2227
E-mail: edward.makwana@bmw.co.za

Press Release,X1,Research & Development,Production,Production Plants,Locations,F48,Product,BMW

this class of car – treats the premium compact segment to an even more
potent shot of Sports Activity Vehicle DNA. The second generation of
this successful model, more than 730,000 units of which have now been
sold, takes to the stage with a body design straight out of the BMW X
model mould. The interior of the new BMW X1, meanwhile, offers
significantly more space for passengers and luggage, a cutting-edge
premium ambience and functionality grounded in solid engineering.
Four-cylinder engines from the BMW Group’s latest generation of power
units, an efficiency-optimised version of the BMW xDrive intelligent
all-wheel-drive system and newly developed chassis technology all help
to palpably enhance sporting ability and ride comfort compared to the
outgoing model – with fuel consumption and emissions reduced by up to
17 per cent, model-on-model.

Alongside its market-leading dynamics and efficiency, a host of
innovative equipment features also help to secure the new BMW X1 its
stand-out position in the segment. Among the items on the options list
are full-LED headlights, Dynamic Damper Control, the BMW Head-Up
Display and the Driving Assist Plus system.

A typical BMW X model: sturdy proportions, impressive
variability and established premium characteristics.
Rugged proportions, a powerful presence and dynamic
lines lend the new BMW X1 a commanding appearance and highlight its
status as the youngest member of the BMW X model family. The new model
has grown in height compared to its predecessor (+53 millimetres),
which has helped increase the spaciousness of the interior. And its
significantly raised seating position (+36 millimetres at the front,
+64 millimetres at the rear) optimises the driver’s view out over the road.

Knee room in the rear has increased by 37 millimetres in standard
specification and by up to 66 millimetres with the optionally
adjustable rear seat, while the 505-litre boot capacity is 85 litres
larger than that of its predecessor. Folding down the standard-fitted
40:20:40 rear seat backrest, which can also be specified in
angle-adjustable form as an option, allows load capacity to be
expanded to as much as 1,550 litres. The optional folding front
passenger seat backrest and a rear seat bench which can slide
13 centimetres fore and aft offer additional variability.

The interior design of the new BMW X1 combines the driver-focused
cockpit design that has become a hallmark of the brand’s models with
touches promoting authoritative, SAV-style driving pleasure and a
contemporary premium ambience. Standard equipment includes air
conditioning, an audio system with USB and AUX-in sockets, and the
iDrive operating system, whose 6.5-inch display is integrated into the
instrument panel in freestanding monitor form. Meanwhile, the Sport
Line, xLine and M Sport packages available as an alternative to
standard specification open the door for targeted individualisation.

New generation of engines, efficiency-optimised xDrive
all-wheel-drive system.
The second-generation BMW X1
(fuel consumption combined: 6.4–4.1 litres/100 km; CO2 emissions
combined: 149–109 g/km) lines up with an all-new selection of engines.
Two petrol and one diesel unit will be available from launch, all of
which have four cylinders and are members of the BMW Group’s new
engine family. Outputs range from 100 kW to 170 kW. The engines link
up with either a six-speed manual (sDrive 18i and sDrive20d only) or
an eight-speed Steptronic unit (standard in all xDrive models and
six-speed Steptronic unit in sDrive18i only), both of which are new developments.

The xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system also takes its place in
the new BMW X1 in a further developed form. The weight-saving, compact
and efficient system uses an electro-hydraulically controlled
multi-plate clutch to distribute drive between the front and rear axle
just as required for the situation at hand. Joining the fray in the
BMW X1 sDrive20i, meanwhile, is a front-wheel-drive construction which
has been developed to deliver the driving dynamics typical of the
brand and has already proved its mettle in the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer.

Premiere in the BMW X1: Head-Up Display and Driving Assist
Plus.
The change of BMW X1 generations also brings
significant advances in the field of intelligent connectivity. A new
addition to the range of BMW ConnectedDrive features is a BMW Head-Up
Display which, as in the larger BMW X models, projects driving-related
information directly onto the windscreen. The BMW X1 can now also be
specified with the Driving Assist Plus line-up of the Active Cruise
Control system with Stop & Go function, Lane Departure Warning,
Traffic Jam Assistant, Collision Warning and Approach Control Warning
with City Braking function. These systems are complemented by an
up-to-the-minute selection of apps allowing customers to add to the
car’s comfort, navigation and infotainment functionality, as desired.

Munich. The BMW X1 is known as a pioneer and global
market leader in the premium Sports Activity Vehicle and SUV segment –
it is a prime example of sheer driving pleasure, bold design and
premium character that is unrivalled in its class. In the second
quarter of 2014, the compact BMW X is raising the standard for this
segment even higher with eye-catching exterior accents, a more refined
interior ambience and innovative equipment features. The very latest
Internet-based services are being added to the range of
BMW ConnectedDrive features in order to provide those drivers with
modern “connectivity lifestyles” with the best mobility services available.

The stylish and bold air intake vents in the front apron underline
the sporty and powerful look of the BMW X1. Standard equipment now
also includes daytime driving lights. Also new for this model are the
attractively styled 17-inch light-alloy wheels with V-spoke design.
Sparkling Brown metallic has also been added to the range of exterior
paint finishes available for the BMW X1.

When ordered with the BMW xLine, BMW Sport Line or the M Sport
package, the surface of the instrument cluster visor is covered with
soft-touch material highlighted by lapfolded seams to add to the
premium elegance. The optional interior trims also embellish the
interior with a choice of exclusive accents in high-gloss Black, matt
Coral Red or pearl-gloss Chrome. The stainless steel sill finisher
protecting the bottom tailgate edge is another refinement that
distinguishes the BMW X1.

The expanded range of BMW ConnectedDrive services available in the
second quarter of 2014 will enable the BMW X1 to strengthen its
pioneering role in terms of intelligent connectivity in its vehicle
segment. When ordered with a navigation system and the Connected Drive
Services option, a steadily growing range of mobility services are
available – owners can subscribe to them at any time, even after the
vehicle purchase. The innovative functions can be integrated in the
car’s operating system via apps, using the smartphone or the SIM card
that is installed in the vehicle. The selected apps will be compatible
with the Apple iPhone and with smartphones that run the Android
operating system. Among the new services offered for the BMW X1 are
Online Entertainment and the ECO PRO Analyser. Some of these new
ConnectedDrive services are still to be confirmed for availability in
South Africa.

After some two-and-a-half years, sales of the compact BMW X model built at BMW Plant in Leipzig and in Tiexi, China have already exceeded 275 000 units. Now this all-round talent emerges with renewed vigour to meet a raft of new challenges. With its specially modified body design, meticulously upgraded interior, comprehensively revised engine portfolio, the new range of BMW Lines and further innovative equipment features, the new BMW X1 delivers an even more intensive experience of the hallmark driving pleasure for which the brand is known.</pp:summary>

In parallel with the launch of the new BMW X1, preparations are under
way for its US market launch. Further growth impulses emanate from
production in China: the new BMW X1 models destined for the Chinese
market are being built in the newly opened plant at Tiexi in Shenyang Province.

The successful concept of transferring familiar BMW X features to the
compact segment has since led to increased competition in the vehicle
class spawned by the BMW X1. What remains uncontested is the BMW X1’s
leadership position in terms of sportiness and efficiency. This lead
is now being extended: the relationship between performance and fuel
consumption has been further optimised thanks to engines with BMW
TwinPower Turbo technology, an eight-speed automatic transmission that
is unique in this segment, the Auto Start-Stop function, Brake Energy
Regeneration,
ECO PRO mode and a wider range of BMW
EfficientDynamics technology. Setting a particularly impressive
example here is the BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition with
average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 4.5 litres per
100 kilometres and CO2 figures of 119 grams per kilometre.

The range of engines for the new BMW X1 comprises three petrol and
five diesel units spanning an output range of 85 kW to 180 kW. Leading
the way in the new generation of four-cylinder diesel engines is the
160 kW powerplant of the new BMW X1 xDrive25d, featuring
BMW
TwinPower Turbo technology comprising latest-generation variable
sequential turbocharging. Depending on the model variant, power is
transferred via brand-typical rear-wheel drive or via the
intelligent
BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Either option is
available to three
of the engine variants of the new BMW X1.

The new BMW X1 also offers innovative individualisation possibilities
for the exterior and the interior. Available for the first time, as an
alternative to the basic trim level, are the BMW Lines with their
exclusive, harmoniously matched design and equipment features. The BMW
xLine particularly emphasises the robust versatility of the new BMW X1
while the
BMW Sport Line accentuates its agility and dynamics.

Design: new touches highlight its elegance, versatility and sportiness.

Typical BMW proportions, expressive, vibrant surfaces and
signature
BMW X model design cues shape the appearance of the BMW
X1.
A sweeping bonnet, long wheelbase and set-back passenger
compartment emphasise the car’s dynamic talent, while attractive light
and shade effects hint at its inherent agility. The versatility and
sturdiness of a BMW X model are reflected in elements such as the
black bordering at the lower edge of the body and the muscular wheel arches.

Above all, the new BMW X1 conveys even more strikingly the powerful
stance that also distinguishes BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicles. In
addition to the inserts in the front and rear apron – reminiscent of
an underguard –
and the special side skirt covers, the circular
foglamps positioned under the headlights add to the hallmark features
of a BMW X. Beyond this, the new BMW X1 boasts attractive touches of
sporting elegance. At both front and rear, the surfaces painted in
body colour now take up a larger area, while the choice of exterior
paintwork colours has been augmented by four new variants.

Front view: even more details in the style of a BMW X model.

When viewed from the front, the powerful stance of the new BMW X1 on
the road and its aura of quality are now accentuated with even greater
intensity. The path of the car’s lines, which converge on the licence
plate mount from either side of the BMW kidney grille, follows the
V-shaped contours of the bonnet, forging downwards and outwards in the
lower section of the bumper to create the sweeping “X” familiar from
the BMW X models in higher vehicle segments. The new tripartite air
intake is likewise a feature shared by all
BMW X models.

The car’s striking lines go hand in hand with a detailed execution of
the body’s surface styling, signalling a vivacious sporty character
and lending the front apron a particularly premium appearance. The
foglamps are now level with an extra crease line that forms a discreet
scoop along the upper edge of the lights and continues into the side
walls. The increased surface area painted in body colour similarly
adds to the car’s elegance.

The new-design headlights afford a detailed view of the car’s
advanced light technology. In the upper area, a chrome-coated accent
strip now cuts across the top of the twin circular headlights, while
an LED accent light – included as part of the optional xenon light
package, complete with LED light rings for the daytime driving lights
– ensures the classic BMW focused look.

Side view: characteristic proportions, new exterior mirrors.

The swage line that rises steadily to the rear of the car, a further
character line extending the contours of the side glass graphic as it
runs rearwards, and powerfully flared wheel arches allow the BMW X1 to
project a very distinctive figure side-on. The pronounced side skirts
are a signature feature of the
BMW X models, while the side
direction indicators are now integrated into the new-design exterior mirrors.

Press Contact: Edward Makwana
Tel: +27-12-522-2227
E-mail: edward.makwana@bmw.co.za

Press Release,X1,Product,BMW

in the premium compact segment in terms of driving pleasure. Yet again premium carmaker BMW has successfully transplanted the BMW X model concept to a new vehicle segment to create a unique product. Now the
BMW X1 is breaking new ground, this time in terms of the
BMW EfficientDynamics programme. The new BMW X1 xDrive28i is the brand’s first four-cylinder petrol model with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, which comprises High Precision Injection direct petrol injection,
a charge system based on the twin-scroll principle, double-VANOS variable camshaft timing and VALVETRONIC variable valve control.</pp:summary>

BMW has timed the introduction of this technology package in the new
BMW X1 xDrive28i to coincide with the launch of a new generation
of BMW 2.0-litre petrol engines. The new 180 kW/245 hp powerplant
combines a power and torque upgrade over the previous engine with
substantially reduced fuel consumption and emissions. This twofold
improvement is reflected in some impressive performance
specifications. The 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 6.1 seconds
(automatic: 6.5 seconds), an improvement of
0.7 seconds
(automatic: 0.3 seconds) over the previous model, which was only
available as an automatic. At the same time, average fuel consumption
in the EU test cycle has been cut by 16 per cent to 7.9 litres/100 km
(35.7 mpg imp), with CO2 emissions of 183 grams per kilometre.

The new BMW X1 xDrive28i comes with a six-speed manual transmission
as standard. The standard-fitted BMW EfficientDynamics technology
includes – amongst other features – Brake Energy Regeneration, an
Optimum Shift Indicator, the Auto Start-Stop function and on-demand
control of auxiliary units. An optional eight-speed automatic version
is also available. Thanks to
its exceptionally high internal
efficiency, models with this transmission offer identical fuel
consumption and emissions performance to those with the manual version.

As standard specification, the new BMW X1 xDrive28i is equipped with
the BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, whose electronically controlled
multi-plate clutch continuously varies the drive power split
between the front and rear axles. The intelligent all-wheel-drive
system is integrated with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and responds
quickly to the first signs
of oversteer or understeer. The
result is improved traction in slippery conditions or away from
surfaced roads, and improved cornering dynamics. xDrive is calibrated
for optimised driving dynamics, which results in precise steering
response when cornering. Additionally, the optional Performance
Control system can be specified, which matches the drive torque at the
rear wheels to driving conditions for even more agile performance.

To add to the agile driving qualities, from spring 2011 the BMW X1
will for
the first time be available with an M Sports package.
This option, which is available ex works for all engine versions,
comprises a range of suspension, exterior and interior components
which have been developed specifically for this compact BMW X model.

The engine: new benchmark in efficiency and dynamism.

BMW X models offer their own distinctive interpretation of typical
BMW driving pleasure. The BMW X1 xDrive28i combines this special
driving experience with efficiency that is unrivalled in this power
class. As a result, this new
BMW X1 model offers sporty power
delivery of a kind that was previously confined to six-cylinder
engines – but combines it with outstanding fuel consumption and
emissions performance.

It’s all down to the latest-generation 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol
engine, which sets new standards with its various innovative
technologies.
The BMW X1 xDrive28i’s powerplant achieves the
twofold goal of BMW EfficientDynamics in impressive style: it
continuously raises the bar on driving pleasure, while at the same
time reducing fuel consumption and emissions. With a displacement of
1,997 cc and world-exclusive BMW TwinPower Turbo technology,
incorporating twin-scroll turbocharging, High Precision Injection,
double-VANOS and VALVETRONIC, it delivers maximum power of
180 kW/245 hp at 5,000 rpm – 55 kW more than the previous top-powered
BMW 2.0-litre petrol engine.

Debut: first application of BMW TwinPower Turbo in a four-cylinder engine.

BMW TwinPower Turbo technology gives the new four-cylinder engine
the sort of power which naturally aspirated engines can only
achieve through more cylinders and substantially larger displacement.
The four-cylinder engine with its all-aluminium crankcase, including a
motor sport-derived bedplate, is lighter and more compact than a
six-cylinder engine of equivalent power.
This has direct
benefits for the efficiency of the BMW X1 xDrive28i and also, thanks
to the reduced front axle load, for agility.

Press Contact: Edward Makwana
Tel: +27-12-522-2227
E-mail: edward.makwana@bmw.co.za

Press Release,X1,Product,BMW

latter, equipped with rear-wheel drive, offering average fuel
consumption in the EU test cycle of only 5.2 litres/100 kilometres and
a CO2 rating of 136 grams per kilometre as the most efficient and
economical option for spontaneous driving pleasure.

Body design: versatile sportiness, self-confident elegance.
The
driving characteristics of the BMW X1 combine superior agility with
versatile sportiness – and precisely these features also come out in
the design of the new model. At the same time the self-confident
elegance so typical of the BMW X1 forms a perfect match with modern
function all round. The front end, the side and the rear end flow
smoothly into one another, striking and powerful lines creating a
sleek and stylish connection between the various body elements.

Measuring 4.45 metres in length, this unique five-door stands out
clearly from every angle as a fully-fledged BMW X model, despite its
body dimensions smaller than on the BMW X6, the BMW X5, and the BMW
X3. Square-contoured wheel arches, greater ground clearance, the
slender protection cover on the lower part and the upright BMW kidney
grille clearly symbolise the robust qualities of the new model, while
long wheelbase of 2.76 metres and the low-slung rear window create
sleek and stretched proportions testifying to the sporting character
of the BMW X1. This sporting character is also borne out by the
excellent aerodynamic qualities of the new model resulting, not least,
in a drag coefficient of 0.32 on the BMW X1 sDrive20d, the BMW X1
xDrive18d, and the BMW X1 sDrive18d.

Through its strong and muscular bumper and the BMW kidney grille
merging smoothly with all surrounding elements, the front end spells
out powerful presence right from the start. The widely flared wheel
arches and the strongly contoured engine lid with its contour lines
stretching towards the kidney grille give the BMW X1 a particularly
powerful and muscular appearance.

Press Contact: Edward Makwana
Tel: +27-12-522-2227
E-mail: edward.makwana@bmw.co.za

Press Release,X1,Product,BMW
