Pairing everyday useability with added adrenaline, the
high-performance BMW M5 Touring impresses with its monolithic design
and muscular body styling. Similarly, the interior features a driver
focussed cabin with M specific displays echoing a race car
atmosphere.

Renier Beneke, General Manager for Sales and Distribution, BMW South
Africa, said: “The BMW M5 Touring follows the successful market
introduction of the BMW M5 Sedan in South Africa last year. First
revealed at the popular BMW M Fest in October 2024, the Sedan was
bestowed Performance Car of the Year honours (and placed third
overall) in the 2025 Old Mutual Insure South African Car of the Year.
The addition of the Touring derivative to our arsenal speaks to the
overwhelming popularity of this model.”

The BMW M5 Touring shares its BMW M HYBRID V8 powertrain with the
proven BMW M5 sedan. The third generation of the BMW M5 Touring
combines a powerful V8 engine mated to a BMW eDrive motor to generate
a system output of 535 kW and 1,000 Nm of torque. The electric system
provides an all-electric range up to 70 km (WLTP) for the added
benefit of local emission-free mobility.

Other performance highlights include M Drive Professional, which
features Boost Control, M Laptimer and Track View, the M Drivers
Package for a top speed of 305 km/h, and the M sport exhaust system.
The Touring derivative rolls on M5-specific mixed 20- and 21-inch
wheels and tyres.

In South Africa, BMW M5 Touring owners can look forward to the
sensation of a newly designed M leather steering wheel and M
multifunction seats as part of a comprehensive standard specification
offer. M carbon mirror caps, Panorama Glass Roof and rear sunblinds
are standard additions compared with the Sedan. The only options on
offer are the deletion of the model designation, a trailer tow hitch,
M Carbon brakes and brake callipers finished in high gloss black.

Ten exterior colours, including the M5 range’s exclusive Isle of Man
Green and Marina Bay Blue, and Storm Bay and Frozen Deep Grey from the
BMW Individual palette, are offered. The cabin receives six upholstery
possibilities and the option of either M Carbon Fibre or BMW
Individual Fineline Dark Oak interior trims.

The recommended retail price for the BMW M5 Touring, including VAT
and Motorplan, is R2,795,000.00.

Press Contact: Hailey Philander
Tel: +27-71-666-2070
E-mail: hailey.philander@bmw.co.za

Press Release,M5,BMW M,G99,Touring,Product

BMW M5 powers into a new era.

With 40 years of history under its belt, the legendary
high-performance sedan enters its seventh model generation. The
executive model from BMW M GmbH now has an electrified drive system
for the first time. A model-specific version of the M HYBRID system
gives the new BMW M5 (energy consumption, weighted, combined: 1,7 –
1,6 l/100 km and 25,5 – 25,0 kWh/100 km according to WLTP; CO2
emissions, weighted, combined: 39 – 37 g/km according to WLTP; fuel
consumption with discharged battery: 10,3 – 10,2 l/100 km according to
WLTP) maximum output of 535 kW and peak system torque of 1,000 Nm. The
combination of a high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo
technology and an electric motor, plus power transfer courtesy of an
eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive all-wheel drive,
enables acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds.

BMW M3 Touring bolsters BMW’s midsize portfolio in South Africa.

And now the multi-faceted premium midsize portfolio for BMW has been
bolstered with the addition of the BMW M3 Touring to the company’s
local portfolio. The BMW M3 Touring Competition with M xDrive uses the
most powerful version of the six-cylinder in-line engine with M
TwinPower Turbo technology to produce 390 kW/650Nm. New design and
equipment features, and further advances in the area of digitalisation
pave the way for another new chapter in the M3/M4 models’ ongoing
success story. This latest stage on their development curve takes the
race-car character and long-distance poise and composure of the
high-performance premium midsize models to a new level of space and
versatility in the BMW M3 Touring.

Munich. From the launch of the new
BMW M5, the range of Original BMW Accessories will offer a wide
variety of options designed to shine an even brighter spotlight on the
dynamic character of the high-performance sedan. Model-specific BMW
M Performance Parts allow owners to hone both the athletic looks of
the latest BMW M model and, above all, its aerodynamic balance with
genuine precision.

With its M HYBRID drive system, which produces maximum output of 535
kW and peak system torque of 1,000 Nm, its bespoke chassis technology
and the M xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system, the new BMW M5
offers a performance experience beyond anything else in its class. Its
standout dynamic capability is complemented by a powerful, puristic
exterior design. Like the M Carbon exterior package available
ex-factory, a host of BMW M Performance Parts – also made from
weight-saving, high-tech carbon fibre and available from the launch of
the new BMW M5 – generate a rare and distinctive sporting allure.

Exterior components in carbon fibre accentuate the car’s
dynamic lines and optimise its aerodynamic balance.

The expressive appearance of the new BMW M5 is shaped by its
sculptural front apron and eye-catching BMW M kidney grille, as well
as by prominently flared wheel arches and side skirts. The BMW M
Performance Parts for the exterior fit neatly into the car’s geometry
and design, and bring added emphasis to both the sedan’s dynamic lines
and its powerful stature.

A highlight of the BMW M Performance Parts range for the new BMW M5
is the head-turning, two-section M Performance rear diffuser carbon
fibre. It teams up with the M Performance tailpipe trims carbon fibre
to bring a modern and extremely sporty look to the rear end of the
high-performance sedan. The M Performance tailpipe trims are made from
a titanium/carbon fibre mix. With their milled titanium end rings and
embossed M5 logo, they create a suitably powerful and imposing proposition.

The M Performance rear diffuser carbon fibre is offered either as an
addition to the rear spoiler included in the M Carbon exterior package
or in conjunction with the M Performance rear spoiler pro carbon fibre
also available as a retrofit option. This ensures precisely optimised
air routing in extremely dynamic driving situations.

The M Performance front splitter carbon fibre further enhances the
aerodynamic balance and visual impact of the new BMW M5. It too is
available in tandem with either of the two rear spoiler variants. The
two-section M Performance front splitter carbon fibre showcases the
central lower air intake – which, for the first time, is split into
two by a central partition – even more prominently.

Extremely wide tracks and a bespoke design for the side frame of the
body give the new BMW M5 muscular proportions. The M Performance sill
extensions carbon fibre lend additional emphasis to the athletic form
of the car’s side view. They can be combined with the M exterior
mirror caps carbon fibre to create a particularly cohesive overall
impression. All of the carbon fibre attachment parts are meticulously
hand-crafted from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) with a
high-quality clear coat finish.

M-typical racing feeling and detail customisation.

The dynamic profile of the new BMW M5 can be further accentuated by
the M Performance side decals in Frozen Black. These high-quality
decals can withstand commercial car washes and again integrate
seamlessly with the geometry of the M5. The M Performance aerial cover
aramid – likewise constructed from an exclusive fibre composite
material – brings a stylistic highlight to the car’s roof. Added to
which, M Performance light-alloy wheels will be offered for the new
BMW M5 from summer 2025.

The M Performance fuel tank cap carbon fibre extends the new
high-performance sedan’s aura of exclusivity to a detail level and can
be identified by its M Performance badging in brushed aluminium. The
quartet of M Performance floor mats – each of which features
decorative stitching in contrasting colours and M Performance badging
– add further sporting touches to the interior. The M Performance tyre
bags bring motorsport feeling to the customer’s garage, too. They are
printed with a logo in BMW M GmbH colours and a graphic indicating the
wheel position, and have a reinforced handle for easy transportation.
The M Performance key case also makes a distinctive statement. The
elegant, precisely fitting cover in black fine-grain nappa leather
protects the owner’s car key against scratches and rounds off the BMW
M Performance Parts line-up in stylish fashion.

The BMW M Performance Parts available for the new BMW M5 have been
developed on the back of BMW M GmbH’s established motor-racing
expertise and the experience it has garnered over more than five
decades – and are designed precisely to fit the particular
characteristics of the high-performance sports car. Plus, the retrofit
products have been tested according to the BMW Group’s stringent
quality guidelines and have already undergone homologation alongside
the overall vehicle, which means separate registration with the
vehicle licensing authorities is not required.

A model-specific version of the M HYBRID system gives the new BMW M5 (energy consumption, weighted, combined: 1,7 – 1,6 l/100 km and 25,5 – 25,0 kWh/100 km according to WLTP; CO2 emissions, weighted, combined: 39 – 37 g/km according to WLTP; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 10,3 – 10,2 l/100 km according to WLTP) maximum output of 535 kW and peak system torque of 1,000 Nm. The combination of a high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor, plus power transfer courtesy of an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive all-wheel drive, enables acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds.</pp:summary>

The imposing power delivery and emotionally engaging performance
experience served up by the new BMW M5 are accompanied by a new
interpretation of the high-performance car design for which M is
renowned. Prominent wheel arch and side skirt extensions, the
sculptural front apron and model-specific surfacing around the
C-pillar – including an embossed “M5” logo for the Hofmeister kink –
give the car an athletic appearance that helps to differentiate it
more clearly than ever from the BMW 5 Series Sedan. At the same time,
an unusually high proportion of surfaces painted in body colour create
a puristic appearance with stylish references to its superior dynamic talents.

As such, the exterior design – like the ambience of the luxurious
interior, which is enhanced with M-specific features – accentuates the
multi-layered character of the new BMW M5. Its sense of poise and
assurance is fuelled by vast reserves of power that can be summoned at
any time. Kept discreetly in reserve during relaxed, electric-only
cruises, this performance comes vividly to the fore as the BMW M5
reveals the “sporty sedan” side to its personality over longer
distances – and is unleashed in full during sessions on the track.

The M HYBRID system, plus power transmission and chassis technology
tuned to its specific performance characteristics, give the new BMW M5
transverse and longitudinal dynamics unparalleled in this market
segment. Together with its similarly outstanding elasticity, the new
BMW M5 takes M performance into a new dimension.

The world premiere of the new BMW M5 will take place at the Goodwood
Festival of Speed in England in July 2024, with production at BMW
Group Plant Dingolfing beginning the same month. The worldwide market
launch of the new BMW M5 -- including in South Africa -- will start in
the fourth quarter of 2024 .

M HYBRID drive system in the new BMW M5: intoxicating
performance, impressive electric range.

The M HYBRID drive system in the new BMW M5 brings a
4.4-litre
V8 engine with classical high-revving character
together with an electric motor, whose performance characteristics are
tuned specifically for the BMW M5 and which is integrated into the
eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. The combustion engine benefits
from cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology, a cross-bank exhaust
manifold and optimised oil separation. It develops maximum output of
430 kW and peak torque of 750 Nm. The maximum output of the electric
motor is 145 kW. It has nominal torque of 280 Nm, but a pre-gearing
stage allows effective torque at the transmission input to be
increased to 450 Nm.

The combination of combustion engine and electric motor adheres to
the same principle as the drive system in the BMW M Hybrid V8
endurance racing machine. The ability of the electric motor to
generate its power instantly and the intelligently controlled
interplay of the combustion engine and motor ensure the M HYBRID
system responds without delay to every movement of the accelerator.
The linear power delivery typical of BMW M models is found here in
particularly compelling form. The eight-cylinder engine can spin to a
maximum 7,200 rpm as the new BMW M5 treats its driver to the sensation
of relentless power development into the upper reaches of the load and
speed ranges. Top speed is limited to 250 km/h as standard. The
limiter is raised to 305 km/h on the M Driver’s Package, which is
standard for the South African market.

The sports exhaust system of the new BMW M5 underscores the
performance experience with a multi-faceted and emotionally
enthralling engine note. It features electrically controlled,
continuously adjustable flaps and the two pairs of dual tailpipes
familiar from other M models, each with 100-millimetre trims in Black Chrome.

Providing an acoustic accompaniment to the power delivery of the
electric motor is BMW IconicSounds Electric. This M-specific electric
drive sound provides authentic responses to movements of the
accelerator when the car is operating in all-electric mode. With the
relevant drive system configuration, it also generates an engaging
track to highlight the arrival of extra electric power on top of the
output from the V8 engine.

In all-electric operating mode, the new BMW M5 can hit speeds of up
to 140 km/h. The high-voltage battery located low in the car’s
underbody has 18.6 kWh of usable energy, enabling an electric range of
67 – 69 kilometres in the WLTP cycle, which is unmatched by any rival.
The Combined Charging Unit of the new BMW M5 allows AC charging at up
to 7.4 kW.

The power generated by the combustion engine and electric motor is
channelled to the road via the all-wheel-drive system M xDrive, whose
rear-biased setup is particularly pronounced in 4WD Sport mode.
However, the driver can also select 2WD mode. This sends drive
exclusively to the rear wheels with the DSC (Dynamic Stability
Control) system switched off, which will appeal to experienced drivers
who prefer a performance experience of the pure-bred variety. This
further developed iteration of M xDrive – like the electronically
controlled Active M Differential at the rear axle – is tailored
specially to the performance characteristics of the M HYBRID drive system.

Sophisticated chassis technology with M-specific tuning.

The chassis design of the new BMW M5 comprises a double-wishbone
front axle and a five-link rear axle with bespoke kinematics and
elastokinematics, plus a host of other specially tuned components. The
electrically assisted rack-and-pinion steering with M Servotronic and
variable steering ratio has a rigid connection to the front axle
subframe to ensure optimal feedback from the road and a high degree of
directional accuracy. In conjunction with the wide tracks and the
excellent torsional rigidity of the body and chassis mountings, this
combination produces the handling attributes for which BMW M models
are renowned, shaped by agility, precision and the linear build-up of
lateral forces when the driver is pushing on.

Also fitted as standard are adaptive M suspension with electronically
controlled dampers and Integral Active Steering, which steers the rear
wheels by up to 1.5 degrees. M-specific tuning, the individually
selectable settings and the ability to adjust the dampers at each
wheel individually optimise the body’s connection to the road and
maximise the car’s spread of talents – from everyday driving comfort
to race-ready dynamic prowess. Turning the rear wheels as required
improves directional stability at high speed, as well as agility and
comfort when manoeuvring.

Traction, agility and directional stability all benefit from
near-actuator wheel slip limitation and the networking of all control
systems within the integrated transverse dynamics management setup.
Both the standard M Compound brakes and optional M Carbon ceramic
brakes combine with an integrated braking system that presents the
driver with two pedal feel settings. M light-alloy wheels (20-inch at
the front axle, 21-inch at the rear) come as standard and are fitted
with high-performance tyres.

Assistance systems for assured and comfortable driving.

While the South African specification is yet to be confirmed, a much
wider selection of standard and optional systems for automated driving
and parking than was offered for the predecessor model takes assurance
and comfort in day-to-day driving to another new level. Standard
specification for the new BMW M5 brings features such as front
collision warning, Lane Departure Warning including lane return with
steering assistance, the Evasion Assistant, the Attentiveness
Assistant and the Speed Limit Info system. The optional Driving
Assistant Professional adds Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go
function together with tech including the Steering and Lane Control
Assistant, traffic light detection, automatic Speed Limit Assist and
Active Navigation.

The new BMW M5 is equipped as standard with the Parking Assistant
including Reversing Assistant. Meanwhile, the optional Parking
Assistant Professional allows automated parking and manoeuvring over a
distance of up to 200 metres to be controlled from inside the car or
by smartphone from outside the car.

Fresh scope for adjusting the driving experience to personal taste.

The control panel on the centre console of the new BMW M5 houses a
model-specific composition of buttons which can be used to tailor the
driving experience to individual preferences in a variety of ways. The
Setup button provides direct access to the configuration of the drive
system, Drivelogic, chassis, steering, braking system and M xDrive, as
well as the intensity of brake energy recuperation. Two overall
vehicle setups can be stored and selected using the M buttons on the
steering wheel. The Launch Control function is available in all the
M Setup menu settings with the exception of the M xDrive system’s 2WD mode.

Pushing the DSC button activates M Dynamic Mode, which raises the DSC
intervention thresholds when it comes to applying brake inputs and
reducing engine output. It is also possible to switch DSC off
completely. Another button allows the driver to select M Mode. When
they switch from the default ROAD setting to SPORT, interventions from
the driver assistance systems are restricted to just the essential
functions required for sporty driving, as is the content shown in the
information display. If the customer specifies the optional M Drive
Professional, they can also make use of TRACK mode. Other features of
M Drive Professional include the M Laptimer and the Boost Control
function, which maximises longitudinal dynamics when executing
mid-range sprints and overtaking manoeuvres.

The operating mode of the M HYBRID system can also be adjusted as
desired. The new M Hybrid button allows the driver to choose between
HYBRID mode – for intelligently controlled interplay between the
combustion engine and electric motor to maximise either efficiency or
performance, depending on the driving situation – and the ELECTRIC
setting, in which the combustion engine is only brought into play by
accelerator kickdown or using the gearshift paddles. eCONTROL mode is
used for effective brake energy recuperation and maintaining battery
charge at a constant level. And M Drive Professional adds DYNAMIC and
DYNAMIC PLUS modes to the mix, which prime the drive system and
cooling system to keep output at a constantly high level or generate
short bursts of maximum output during committed track driving.

Progressive sports car cockpit, M-specific displays on the
BMW Curved Display, exclusive ambience.

As well as the M-specific control panel on the centre console, the
progressive sports car cockpit of the new BMW M5 also contains a newly
designed, flat-bottomed M leather steering wheel with illuminated
M buttons, M multifunction seats with a wide range of electric
adjustment and the BMW Curved Display which, like the standard BMW
Head-Up Display, includes M-specific content. The standard BMW Live
Cockpit Professional also brings the BMW Maps navigation system and
the Augmented View function on the control display.

An upgraded version of BMW iDrive features as standard in the new BMW
M5. It is based on BMW Operating System 8.5 and designed squarely for
use via touch control and natural speech. The digital tech now also
covers the controls for the climate control functions. Temperature
selection, airflow intensity, seat heating and – if specified – the
steering wheel heating can now be controlled by touch via a menu item
in the lower section of the control display or by voice command.

Also playing their part in the exclusive interior ambience are the
standard Merino leather trim, the BMW Interaction Bar, four-zone air
conditioning, heated front seats, ambient lighting with M-specific
interior lighting including Welcome Animation, and the panoramic glass
sunroof. And standard specification for the new BMW M5 also provides
customers with the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, a
wireless charging tray, Comfort Access, an alarm system, automatic
tailgate operation and the charging cable Professional.

Among the items on the options list are the M Carbon exterior
package, an Alcantara headliner, steering wheel heating, active seat
ventilation and a trailer tow hitch. Model-specific BMW M Performance
Parts will also be offered for the new BMW M5 from launch. The
selection includes M Performance forged light-alloy wheels and
exterior components made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).

Press Contact: Hailey Philander
Tel: +27-71-666-2070
E-mail: hailey.philander@bmw.co.za

Press Kit,M5,Sedan,G90,Product,BMW M

BMW M GmbH to continue its product offensive in 2024 and confirms the extension of its model range to include a Touring variant of the new high-performance model.</pp:summary>

Munich. The prototypes are carefully disguised, but
they cannot conceal their character as high-performance cars. The
future generation of the BMW M5 has entered the practical phase of its
series development process. The new high-performance sedan from BMW M
GmbH is now completing its test drives on public roads, BMW Group
proving grounds and racetracks around the world.

Moreover, fans of the BMW M brand can look forward to a further
result of the product offensive that will continue into the year 2024.
BMW M GmbH has now officially confirmed that with the new edition of
the BMW M5, it will be adding a Touring variant to its model range.
The perfect symbiosis of M-typical performance, uncompromising
long-distance comfort and impressive spaciousness will experience a
renaissance in 2024 with the new BMW M5 Touring.

Just like the future BMW M5 Sedan, the Touring variant will also
feature a completely newly-developed, partially-electrified drive
system. Its M-typical performance characteristics as well as the
precisely tuned chassis technology refined with innovative systems
facilitate driving dynamics and agility at a level unique in this
vehicle class. Thus, BMW M GmbH is steadily progressing on its path to
electrification. "We are now also installing a hybrid drive
system with typical M performance in other high-performance
cars," says Dirk Häcker, Head of Development at BMW M GmbH.

For almost 40 years now, the BMW M5 has been the benchmark for
driving dynamics, agility and precision in the high-performance sedan
segment. Evolutionary progress, development know-how from racing and
pioneering innovations in the areas of drive, suspension, aerodynamics
and lightweight construction have shaped the history of the BMW M5.
Engines with six, eight and ten cylinders, M TwinPower Turbo
technology and high-revving characteristics, the compound brake system
with M Carbon ceramic brakes and M xDrive four-wheel drive are just
some of the technological milestones with which this model has
repeatedly redefined top performance in a sedan that is
unconditionally suitable for everyday use. The seventh generation of
the BMW M5 takes up on this – with fascinating innovations for an even
more intense performance experience.

The first BMW M5 Touring was launched back in 1992 based on the
second-generation BMW M5 Sedan and has since stood for a combination
of high performance and everyday practicality on four wheels. In 2007,
BMW M GmbH also added a Touring variant to the fourth-generation BMW
M5. And currently, the successful launch of the first BMW M3
Competition Touring with M xDrive* also underscores the high appeal of
this special vehicle concept in the premium midrange segment of
high-performance cars.

Testing of the first prototypes of the new BMW M5 Touring is to
commence in the next few days in urban traffic, as well as on country
roads and motorways around Munich, and at the BMW M GmbH headquarters
in Garching. The integrated application of all drive and suspension
systems will then also be carried out for the new BMW M5 Touring on
the Nürburgring's Nordschleife, among other places, with the aim of
ensuring the ideal balance of sporting performance on the racetrack
and superior ride comfort in everyday driving and over long distances.

Press Contact: Hailey Philander
Tel: +27-71-666-2070
E-mail: hailey.philander@bmw.co.za

Press Release,M5,Sedan,G90,G99,Touring,Product,BMW M

Munich. With effect from 1 November, Franciscus van
Meel will assume the position as chairman of the board of BMW M GmbH.
He succeeds Markus Flasch, who, after three years at the helm of the
BMW Group subsidiary responsible for particularly sporty automobiles,
will be changing to the Overall Vehicle Development division. Flasch
will assume the position within the BMW Group as head of the
production lines Rolls-Royce, BMW luxury and upper class, in future
also including the BMW midrange production line. During his term of
office in the executive board of BMW M GmbH, the company rose to
become the world’s leading provider of performance and high-performance-automobiles.

For Franciscus van Meel it is a return to the chief executive
position at the top of BMW M GmbH. Between 2015 and 2018, he had
already led the company, which bears the status of an independent
automobile manufacturer. In the meantime, van Meel has also been,
inter alia, responsible for the Rolls-Royce product line as well as
for the BMW luxury and upper class. Under his leadership, the BMW
Group’s new technology flagship, the BMW iX, was brought to
series-production readiness. Van Meel also headed development of the
forthcoming purely electrically powered model variants. With this
experience in hand, he brings along the ideal prerequisites to also
shape the next stages already commenced on the way to electrification
at the BMW M GmbH. The first highlight of van Meel’s second term of
office has already been fixed: 2022 will witness the celebrations
marking the 50th anniversary of the company - originally founded as
BMW Motorsport GmbH - during which many new high-performance
automobiles will be presented. These will also include the first BMW
M3 Touring, which is already in an advanced stage of its series
development process.

During the past three years, BMW M GmbH has been influenced by an
unparalleled model offensive. The list of innovations with which BMW M
GmbH was able to achieve new record sales figures and assume market
leadership ahead of competitors included the extended range of
performance automobiles and new versions of the model series BMW M3
and BMW M4, which represent the core of the BMW M brand, as well as
the absolute top-of-the-range models in their segment, the BMW M2 CS
and the BMW M5 CS. The latest new model, the purely
electrically-powered BMW M automobile, the BMW i4 M50, will be
available in South Africa in the first quarter of 2022.

At the same time, the BMW M company’s commitment as a car
manufacturer and in motorsport was recently again more closely
interlinked. This was accompanied by the realignment of motorsport
activities, new and particularly attractive customer sport offerings
and the decision on BMW’s comeback in international prototype racing,
which has been planned for 2023.

Press Contact: Hailey Philander
Tel: +27-71-666-2070
E-mail: hailey.philander@bmw.co.za

Press Release,M5,BMW i,M2,F87,F90,G26,i4,Product,BMW,BMW M

introduction of the BMW M5 CS (fuel consumption, combined: 11.3 – 11.1
l/100 km correspond to NEDC; 11,3 - 10,9 l/100 km correspond to WLTP,
CO2 emissions, combined: 258 – 253 g/km correspond to NEDC,
257 – 248 g/km correspond to WLTP). The limited-run, exclusive
special-edition model treats four people to an extraordinary driving
experience and blends standout performance attributes with an
exclusive and luxurious appearance.

The 4.4-litre V8 engine with 467 kW makes the BMW M5 CS the most
powerful car in the history of BMW M. Standard features include the
eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and the M xDrive
all-wheel-drive system, which also offers a 2WD mode for pure
rear-wheel drive.

Rigorously applied lightweight design enables a weight saving of some
70 kilograms over the BMW M5 Competition. With retuned bearing springs
at the front and rear axle and further refined damper control, the
chassis has been adapted to the lower vehicle weight and the increased
performance potential of the standard mixed-size Pirelli P Zero Corsa
track tyres (front: 275/35 R 20, rear: 285/35 R 20).

The BMW M5 CS sprints from 0 – 100 km/h in just 3.0 seconds, and from
0 – 200 km/h in 10.4 seconds. Top speed is an electronically governed
305 km/h.

The exceptional driving experience on board the BMW M5 CS can be
enjoyed by four people – the driver and front passenger in M Carbon
seats and two other passengers in the individual rear seats. The black
Merino leather covers (fine-grain for the front seats) also feature
eye-catching contrasting panels and decorative stitching in Mugello
Red. The integral head restraints – with illuminated M5 logos for the
front seats – display an outline of the legendary Nürburgring circuit.

The centre marker perforation with red background on the M Alcantara
steering wheel is a classical racing car touch; the gearshift paddles
are made from carbon fibre and the steering wheel spokes have Black
Chrome trim.

A fixed lightweight cover on the centre console replaces the usual
armrest with opening lid. Its black Merino leather is complemented
by red double stitching. The colour red is used again for the “CS”
badging on the instrument panel and between the bucket-style seats in
the rear.

The BMW kidney grille surround on the BMW M5 CS, the “M5 CS” badges
on the kidney grille, the M gills on the front wings and the boot lid
are finished in the bold colour shade Gold Bronze, as are the 20‑inch
M forged wheels in Y-spoke design (front: 9.5 J x 20, rear: 10.5 J x
20). The door sill finishers come with illuminated “M5 CS” badges.

The L-shaped light tubes of the BMW Laser headlights illuminate
yellow instead of white when low beam, high beam or the Welcome Light
is switched on, bringing successful GT racing cars to mind.

The bonnet, front splitter, exterior mirror caps, rear spoiler, rear
diffuser, M Power engine compartment cover and intake silencer are
made from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP). Some elements
feature exposed carbon fibre.

Standard specification for the M5 CS includes its stainless-steel
sports exhaust system with four unadorned tailpipes and the M Carbon
ceramic brakes, whose callipers are painted in Red as standard or Gold
as an option.

Available alongside the Brands Hatch Grey metallic paint shade are
the exclusive BMW Individual matt paint finishes Frozen Brands Hatch
Grey metallic and Frozen Deep Green metallic.

The market launch of the new BMW M5 CS will get underway in spring
2021. A limited number of units will be introduced in South Africa in
Q3 2021.

The fuel consumption and CO2 emissions figures are
determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the
version applicable. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic
configuration in Germany. The range shown considers the different
sizes of the selected wheels/tyres and the selected items of optional
equipment, and may vary during configuration.

The values are based on the new WLTP test cycle and
are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to ensure
comparability between the vehicles. With respect to these vehicles,
for vehicle-related taxes or other duties based (at least inter alia)
on CO2 emissions, the CO2 values may differ from
the values stated here (depending on national legislation).

Further information on official fuel consumption
figures and specific CO2 emission values of new passenger
cars is included in the following guideline: 'Leitfaden über den
Kraftstoffverbrauch, die CO2 Emissionen und den Stromverbrauch neuer

BMW M GmbH has made its BMW M5 (fuel consumption combined: 10.6 –
10.5 l/100 km [26.6 – 26.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions
combined: 242 – 239 g/km) and BMW M5 Competition (fuel consumption
combined: 10.6 – 10.5 l/100 km [26.6 – 26.9 mpg imp]; CO2
emissions combined: 242 – 239 g/km) high-performance sedans better
than ever with some stylistic fine-tuning and a skilfully honed
operating concept. The 4.4‑litre V8 engine with BMW M TwinPower
Turbo technology generates 441 kW/600 hp in the BMW M5 and 460
kW/625 hp in the BMW M5 Competition. The eight‑speed M Steptronic
transmission with Drivelogic comes as standard, as does M xDrive
all-wheel drive, which also includes a 2WD setting for pure
rear-wheel drive.

Featuring new shock absorbers from the BMW M8 Gran Coupé and
a retuned chassis, the BMW M5 Competition offers even better
driveability and handling at the limit, combined with superior
comfort levels. The BMW M5 Competition sits seven millimetres lower
than the BMW M5 and includes other well-conceived tweaks to the
suspension and springs. This setup makes allowance for the car’s
extra power and truly comes into its own on the race track.

The BMW M5 sprints from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in only 3.4 seconds
and passes 200 km/h (124 mph) with just 11.1 seconds on the clock.
The BMW M5 Competition reaches both marks a fraction more quickly:
100 km/h (62 mph) is up in 3.3 seconds, 200 km/h (124 mph) in 10.8 seconds.

As on the BMW 5 Series range, the updated BMW kidney grille drops
down further into the front apron; its chrome surround now has a
one-piece design framing both kidney elements, which sport
M‑specific double bars and an M badge.

The restyled front apron has bolder contouring and larger air
intakes at the sides, while the large central air intake is
hexagonal in shape and incorporates the oil cooler along with the
radar sensor for the Active Cruise Control (ACC) system.

New L‑shaped light tubes searing in narrow streaks towards the
kidney grille add a dynamic flourish to the newly designed LED
headlights. The new option of BMW Individual lights Shadowline adds
a dark-tinted accent to the Adaptive LED Headlights and BMW Laserlight.

The LED rear lights now have a three-dimensional feel to them and
provide a fresh take on the familiar BMW L shape with their precise
light graphic.

The larger central display with a diagonal of 12.3 inches makes
it easier than ever to keep a clear eye on the myriad functions of
the driving dynamics systems and BMW M xDrive.

The new two-button operating concept in the centre console
originates from the BMW M8. The M Mode button lets the driver toggle
swiftly between the ROAD and SPORT settings. The Setup button takes
them straight to the central display’s menu, where they can select
an individual configuration for the powertrain and chassis options.
The BMW M5 Competition also offers TRACK mode, for an undiluted M
feeling on race circuits.

The standard M Compound brakes can now be specified with callipers
painted in High-gloss Black or High-gloss Red as an alternative to
the existing blue finish.

Only the BMW M5 Competition will be made available in South
Africa, due to retail in Q4 of 2020.

The new BMW M5 Competition high-performance sedan (fuel consumption
combined: 10.8 - 10.7 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 246
– 243 g/km)* brings together exceptional performance and a suitably
rarefied aura with the unruffled ease in everyday use for which BMW M
models are renowned. A 19 kW hike in engine output over the standard
version of the new BMW M5 (to 460 kW), even more direct responses and
bespoke chassis tuning ensure a race-inspired driving experience at
all times.

The market launch of the new BMW M5 Competition heralds the creation
of a new product category. In future, BMW M GmbH will offer the most
powerful variants of its high-performance cars as standalone models.

The engine: more power and a distinctive brand of performance.

The performance-driving experience that defines the character of the
new BMW M5 Competition has a deep emotional richness – and is rooted
in the distinctive way its engine goes about its business. The
4.4-litre V8 unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology now produces
maximum output of 460 kW at 6,000 rpm. Peak torque is 750 Newton
metres and can be enjoyed across an extremely wide rev range – from
1,800 to 5,800 rpm (i.e. a 200-rpm wider band than in the standard
version of the new BMW M5).

The high-revving instincts of the eight-cylinder engine are therefore
harnessed to give the new BMW M5 Competition imposing levels of
thrust. The car’s unique power delivery makes its presence felt in
reducing the Competition’s 0 to 100 km/h time to 3.3 seconds.
Furthermore,
0 – 200 km/h is over in 10.8 seconds – 0.3 seconds
quicker than in the standard version of the new M5.

Standard specification for the new BMW M5 Competition includes a
model-specific M Sport exhaust system with tailpipe embellishers in
black chrome. This version of the twin-pipe, flap-controlled exhaust
generates a strikingly prominent soundtrack. Meanwhile, the addition
of a particulate filter to the Competition’s armoury enables a further
reduction in emissions.

Specially designed engine mounts optimise responsiveness and
cornering characteristics.

The new BMW M5 Competition features model-specific engine mounting,
which also has a noticeable impact on its performance abilities. The
engine mounts have modified characteristics and an increased spring
rate, and the drive unit’s firmer connection to the vehicle’s
structure results in even more direct engine response and immediate
transmission of its power to the drivetrain. The car also turns into
corners with noticeably greater directness and precision on account of
the mounting’s stiffer characteristics.

Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive.

The task of relaying the new BMW M5 Competition’s engine power is
again handled by the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. Three
different modes offering a choice of efficient, sporty or
ultra-dynamic driving can be activated using the Drivelogic rocker
switch on the gear selector.

Having made its debut in the standard version of the new BMW M5, the
M xDrive all-wheel-drive system now also feeds the further increased
power of the BMW M5 Competition onto the road with poise, assurance
and thrilling alacrity. It generates just enough extra traction to
achieve acceleration times worthy of a super-sports car. The centrally
controlled interaction between M xDrive and the Active M Differential
is largely responsible for channelling the engine’s remarkable output
to the car’s wheels without any loss of power en route. The
rear-biased setup of the M xDrive system is another contributory
factor in the tremendous agility of the high-performance sedan. Plus,
a rear-wheel-drive-only setting (2WD) allows experienced and skilled
drivers to revel in the experience offered by past generations of the
BMW M5 – i.e. handling in its purest form, with no control systems
holding the car back.

Individually tuned chassis for the ultimate in precision and performance.

Like every BMW M car, the new BMW M5 Competition is equipped with
chassis technology matched perfectly to the performance
characteristics of its engine. The associated modifications ensure
precisely controllable handling at all times, even in extremely
dynamic driving situations. As well as lowering the vehicle by
seven millimetres, the model-specific chassis tuning also includes
judicious tweaks to the wheel suspension, springs and dampers.

The increased camber at the front axle enhances the car’s ability to
absorb lateral forces through high-speed corners. Fitting the toe
links with ball joints instead of rubber mounts has resulted in even
more precise wheel guidance at the rear axle. And the rear anti-roll
bar also has a firmer spring rate. The front axle of the new BMW M5
Competition is equipped with a newly designed mounting for the
anti-roll bar. Making the springs at the front and rear axles ten per
cent stiffer than on the standard version of the new BMW M5 has
produced a firmer ride, which also has a positive impact on steering
response. Plus, shorter auxiliary springs reduce fluctuation in wheel
loads, as does the unique tuning of the damper hydraulics.
Consequently, the direct connection with the chassis can also be
clearly felt in Comfort mode. Selecting Sport mode activates the
damper settings perfected for testing on the Nürburgring’s
Nordschleife circuit, while Sport Plus lends itself to ultra-dynamic
driving on grand prix tracks.

Standard specification for the new BMW M5 Competition includes
exclusive M light-alloy wheels sporting a Y-spoke design in a
bi-colour finish. The 20-inch forged wheels are shod with mixed-size
tyres measuring 275/35 R 20 at the front and 285/35 R 20 at the rear.

Exclusive and highly expressive design features.

The exclusive feel of the new BMW M5 Competition is further enhanced
by a selection of other model-specific design features. BMW Individual
high-gloss Shadow Line trim is complemented by the use of discreetly
sporty high-gloss black for the kidney grille surround, the decorative
mesh of the signature BMW M gills in the front side panels, the trim
for the rear bumper covering and the exterior mirror caps. Another
special feature are the door openers, which are painted fully in the
body colour. The rear spoiler and “M5” boot lid badge – which gains
“Competition” lettering – also come in high-gloss black.

Inside the car, an understated stripe design in BMW M GmbH colours
for the seat belts, plus floor mats with special piping and “M5” logo,
point to the exclusive character of the new BMW M5 Competition. A
further identifying feature is the “M Competition” graphic that
appears in the instrument cluster to greet the driver when it is
starting up.

The new BMW M5 Competition will be available in South Africa in the
third quarter of this year.Pricing will be communicated in due course.

Munich. The BMW M5 (combined fuel consumption: 10.5
l/100km*; combined CO2 emissions: 241 g/100km*) has been
voted "World Performance Car 2018", making this the seventh
time BMW has received a World Car Award from the organisation
"World Car of the Year". The award ceremony was held on 28
March 2018 at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

There were a total of eleven vehicles in this category –
performance-oriented cars of which at least 2,000 units are produced
per year and which are available for purchase on at least two
continents from 1 January 2017 until 31 May 2018. Selection and voting
in all categories was carried out by an international jury made up of
82 leading automobile journalists from 24 countries.

The BMW M5 is fitted with the latest version of the 4.4-litre V8
engine with M Twin Power Turbo Technology. An output of 441kW and a
maximum torque of 750Nm guarantee supreme propulsion and phenomenal
driving performance: the V8 biturbo engine accelerates the M5 from 0
to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. The new M5 features the M specific
all-wheel drive system M xDrive. Power transmission is taken care of
by the new 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic: in
conjunction with M xDrive, this ensures the power of the high-revving
turbocharged engine is transferred to the road in perfect fashion.

The new BMW M5 has just become available in South Africa. For more
information visit www.bmw.co.za/m5

CO2 emissions combined: 241 g/km*) takes driving dynamics
into a new dimension. Making its local debut at BMW dealerships
nationwide from Thursday, 29 March 2018, the all-new sixth generation
BMW M5 sees the introduction of the new M-specific all-wheel-drive
system M xDrive. Not only does this drive system enable the M5 to
reach new heights of dynamic performance, it means that it excels in
terms of everyday practicality and delivers supreme poise in all
driving conditions as well.

Frank van Meel, Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW M GmbH,
explains the benefits of the pioneering drivetrain technology aboard
the new BMW M5: “Thanks to M xDrive, the new BMW M5 can be piloted
with the familiar blend of sportiness and unerring accuracy both on
the race track and out on the open road, while also delighting drivers
with its significantly enhanced directional stability and
controllability right up to the limits of performance when driving in
adverse conditions such as in the wet or snow.”

The car’s ability to juggle complete suitability for everyday use on
the one hand and sheer driving pleasure and superb track performance
on the other is down to the M xDrive system’s central intelligent
control capability. When the engine is first started, the new BMW M5
will be in all-wheel-drive mode (4WD) with Dynamic Stability Control
(DSC) switched on. The driver is then able to vary the handling
characteristics of the M5 by activating various driving dynamics
modes, including a rear-wheel-drive mode with no DSC. In this 2WD
mode, the new BMW M5 allows accomplished drivers to enjoy a pure-bred
form of driving pleasure.

Hard at work under the bonnet of the new BMW M5 is the latest and
most advanced version of the 4.4-litre V8 engine featuring
M TwinPower Turbo technology. Output of 441 kW and peak torque of 750
Nm promise supreme propulsive power and formidable performance. The
twin-turbo V8 unit propels the new M5 from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere
3.4 seconds, for instance. The task of relaying the drive power falls
to the new eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic,
which teams up with the M xDrive system to transfer the high-revving
engine’s turbocharged might to the road to optimum effect in all
driving conditions. The upshot of all this is that the new BMW M5 is
not just the fastest of all the M5 models built since 1984, but the
most nimble too.

Munich. A special MotoGP season gets underway for BMW
M GmbH at the “Losail International Circuit” in Qatar this weekend
(16th to 18th March): it is BMW M’s
20th season as “Official Car of MotoGP”. BMW and BMW M GmbH
have been involved as partners of MotoGP organiser Dorna Sports since
1999. Activities are focussed on providing the safety car fleet. In
the 2018 anniversary season, the fleet will be headed by the new BMW
M5 MotoGP Safety Car. BMW M GmbH will provide a total of seven BMW M
high-performance cars this year to ensure the safety of the race events.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dorna Sports for the
faith they have shown in us for what is now two decades. Rarely do you
come across such a long and successful partnership in sport, and we
are proud of this special anniversary,” said Frank van Meel, President
of BMW M GmbH. “When we partnered with MotoGP organiser Dorna Sports
in 1999, our aspiration was to use all our expertise, innovative
technology from motorsport and new ideas to serve safety in the
MotoGP. That remains the case today. 20 years down the road, Dorna
Sports still has a strong partner on board, in BMW M GmbH, for whom
the safety of the riders takes top priority.”

The fleet of safety and official cars has always consisted of the
latest BMW M models, optimised for use on the racetrack. Celebrating
the 20th anniversary, BMW M GmbH remains true with this
philosophy and sets a real highlight with the new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car.

The new course car is based on the high-performance sedan BMW M5
(combined consumption: 10.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions:
241 g/km)*, which was showcased to the global public for the first
time in August 2017. The BMW M5’s technical features ensure perfect
handling, even at the limits of driving dynamics. These features
include the newly-developed M-specific all-wheel drive M xDrive, which
is being used in the BMW M5 for the first time. The 4.4-litre V8
engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology represents another
significant increase in performance compared to previous models, with
441 kW/600 HP and maximum torque of 750 Nm in the production M5.
Painstaking manual work at the BMW M Manufaktur in Garching converted
the high-performance base car into the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car,
preparing it to appear as the course car in MotoGP.

In the 2018 season, the fleet of official MotoGP vehicles includes a
total of seven different BMW M high-performance cars. Alongside the
new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car the BMW M3 Safety Car will also be in
action. BMW M GmbH will provide the Safety Officer and the Race
Director with a BMW M4 Coupé Safety Car with water injection and a BMW
M2 Safety Car. In addition, the BMW X5 M Medical Car will take to the
track this season and a BMW M6 Gran Coupé Safety Car also stands ready
to be in action. Two BMW S 1000 RR, which BMW Motorrad provides as
safety bikes, complete the 2018 safety car fleet.

Among the many other activities that make up BMW M GmbH’s commitment
to MotoGP is the BMW M Award, which will be presented for the
16th time in 2018. This award is presented at the end of
each MotoGP season to the rider with the best overall result in qualifying.

The winner receives an exclusive BMW M car. The BMW M MotoGP
Experience sees guests of BMW M GmbH experience an unforgettable race
weekend. They are given an exclusive glimpse behind the scenes by BMW
M MotoGP experts Loris Capirossi and Alex Hofmann. Furthermore, BMW M
GmbH presents its latest models and products with on-site campaigns on
selected Grand Prix weekends.

MotoGP” involvement in the comprehensive media guide attached and

Munich. Millions of gamers worldwide can look forward
to an exciting new addition to “Need
for SpeedTM No Limits”. The new BMW M5 (fuel
consumption combined: 10.5 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 241 g/km)
is now available for the highly successful smartphone racing game. The
high-performance sedan is an exclusive feature of the latest “Xtreme
Racing Championship”; until 9 February, players can register for the
championship. After registration, they have seven days to drive the
BMW M5 in a series of competitive races to test their skills. Winners
will be able to permanently unlock the model.

“Need for SpeedTM No Limits” is the first adaptation of
the extremely popular racing game series “Need for SpeedTM”
for mobile devices. In the two-and-a-half years since its market
launch, it has become one of the most popular smartphone racing games
in the world, with several million downloads and a very active
community. The game offers a wide range of unlockable vehicles that
can be customised to individual preferences and then tested against
other players around the world in different racing modes. More than 11
billion races have already been completed.

BMW is already part of the game, with the BMW M3 Coupé (1999), the
BMW M4 Coupé (2014) and the BMW M2 Coupé (2015). The new BMW M5 Sedan
will now join this trio. It will be integrated into the game’s app
icon and also features in the game trailer. With the BMW M5, BMW has
the fastest model in the Sports category. By this, gaming enthusiast
around the globe can experience the new Sports Sedan even before its
market launch in March 2018.

Electronic Arts and the BMW M5 already share a history. The sedan
celebrated its world
premiere last year – not, as is customary, at a motor show, but at
Europe’s biggest trade show for interactive games and entertainment,
GamesCom in Cologne. Why? Even before the BMW M5 was available in
showrooms, gamers were already able to experience it in the action
racing game “Need for SpeedTM Payback” that had just been
released at GamesCom 2017. In the meantime, gamers worldwide had
already clocked up around 480,000 hours – equivalent to about 55 years
– in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan on the virtual racetracks of “Need for
SpeedTM Payback”.

The BMW M5 continues the long history of BMW models in the successful
“Need for SpeedTM” racing game series. The first BMW
featured in “Need for SpeedTM” back in 1997; the first BMW
M5 in 1999. These were followed by the BMW M3 in “Need for
SpeedTM Most Wanted” in 2005, the BMW M3 GTR in “Need for
SpeedTM Shift” in 2009 and many other appearances,
including the BMW M4, M6 and Z4 M. Just three years ago, in 2015, the
new BMW M2 made its big debut in the newest instalment of “Need for
SpeedTM” at that time.

New BMW M5 sets GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS for the longest
drift in eight hours and the longest twin-vehicle drift.

BMW instructor Johan Schwartz completed a sustained drift
of 232.5 miles (374.2 kilometres).

Schwartz and BMW Performance Center Chief Driving
Instructor Matt Mullins performed a twin vehicle drift over a
distance of 49.25 miles (79.3 kilometres) in one hour.

Custom refuelling system developed to allow mid-drift
refuelling during world record attempt.

The new BMW M5 (combined fuel consumption: 10.5 l/100 km*; combined
CO2 emissions: 241 g/km*) is in record fever: on 11 December 2017,
instructor Johan Schwartz performed a sustained drift at the BMW
Performance Center in Greer, South Carolina, in the new BMW M5,
covering exactly 232.5 miles (374.2 kilometres) on a so-called skid
pad, thereby setting a new GUINESS WORLD RECORD for the longest drift
in eight hours. Schwartz shattered the previous record by 143 miles
(230.1 kilometres).

A custom-built refuelling system developed by BMW in collaboration
with the North Carolina-based company Detroit Speed made it possible
to drift continuously without a break for the full eight hours as
required by the GUINESS WORLD RECORDS. This enabled the BMW M5 to be
refuelled during the drift in the same way that fighter jets can
refuel in mid-flight – though in this case the operation was performed
by hand: a second BMW M5 driven by the Chief Driving Instructor of the
BMW Performance Center, Matt Mullins, accompanied the record-breaking
M5. Mullins adapted to Schwartz's drifting speed, allowing Matt Butts
of Detroit Speed to carrying out the refuelling operation, secured by
a safety tether that permitted him to straddle the space between the
two moving vehicles by leaning out of the rear window of the second car.

“Although we practised the refuelling several times before the
GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title attempt, there was very little margin for
error,” said Butts. “We’re very excited to have played a part in Johan
and BMW recapturing this record.”

A second GUINESS WORLD RECORD was awarded for the longest twin
vehicle water-assisted drift: Schwartz and Mullins drifted together
for one hour, covering a total of 49.25 miles (79.3 kilometres).

emissions combined: 241 g/km*) takes BMW M GmbH into new territory,
with M xDrive all-wheel drive featuring in the high-performance sedan
for the first time. This change of tack sees the M5 exploring new
dynamic dimensions and offering greater everyday practicality in all
driving conditions. The new car is committed to building on the
tradition of a concept – the luxurious four-door business sedan with a
taste for the race track – first glimpsed in 1984 with the original BMW M5.

The new M xDrive developed by BMW M GmbH is the most emotionally
engaging all-wheel-drive system yet to grace the high-performance
segment. It works with a central transfer case with multi-plate clutch
and distributes drive fully variably between the front and rear axle,
as required. Another ingredient in the car’s supreme traction in all
road and weather conditions is the Active M Differential at the rear
axle, which also works fully variably and has a locking effect between
0 and 100 per cent.

The character of M xDrive can be adjusted as desired. The driver has
five different configurations to choose from based on combinations of
the DSC modes (DSC on, MDM, DSC off) and M xDrive modes (4WD, 4WD
Sport, 2WD). In the basic setting with DSC (Dynamic Stability Control)
activated and 4WD, the system permits slight slip through the rear
wheels when accelerating out of corners – and therefore plays its part
in giving the new BMW M5 its sporting agility. In M Dynamic mode (MDM,
4WD Sport) M xDrive allows easily controlled drifts. The three
M xDrive modes with DSC switched off have been conceived to sate the
appetites of keen drivers and primarily for use on the track. Here,
the driver can choose from three configurations up to and including
pure rear-wheel drive (2WD). This mode allows the driver to pick their
own drift angle and treats connoisseurs to driving dynamics in their
purest form.

Providing ample power for the new BMW M5 is a 4.4-litre V8 bi-turbo
engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. The M engineers have carried
out significant revisions to the outgoing model’s power unit. For
example, newly developed turbochargers, ultra-efficient indirect
charge air cooling and increased fuel injection pressure together help
to raise output and, above all, torque. The engine develops 441 kW at
5,600 – 6,700 rpm, while a monumental 750 Nm of torque is placed at
the driver’s disposal from as low down as 1,800 rpm and remains there
until 5,600 rpm. A map-controlled, fully variable oil pump ensures oil
is supplied as and when the new BMW M5 needs it, even on the track.
The car’s impressive performance figures speak for themselves: 0 to
100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in 11.1 seconds. Top
speed, meanwhile, is an electronically limited 250 km/h, but the
optional M Driver’s Package can keep the fun coming to 305 km/h.

The new BMW M5 channels all that power through a specially tuned
eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. In D mode it
provides all the comfort and convenience of fully automatic gear
changes, but can then also switch to sequential manual shifts. The
driver can do this using either the compact selector lever on the
centre console or the steering wheel-mounted paddles. Drivelogic
allows the driver to adjust the transmission’s characteristics to
their personal preferences. For track use, the
eight-speed M Steptronic unit serves up lightning-fast shift times,
helping to give the new BMW M5 its exceptional agility and dynamic flair.

The suspension of the new BMW M5 is likewise designed to deliver both
maximum traction for everyday use and supreme dynamic performance on
the track. Like the engine, transmission and M xDrive system, it has
been tuned by experts and racing drivers at venues including the
world’s most exacting test facility – the Nürburgring Nordschleife
circuit. Sophisticated stiffening elements in the front and rear
structures ensure the body structure is extremely rigid and therefore
that the car provides instantaneous feedback, in particular when the
driver is pushing hard on the road or track.

The driver can also choose from Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes
for the Variable Damper Control (VDC) system – which has M-specific
tuning – and the M Servotronic steering. And the engine’s
characteristics can also be configured to the driver’s tastes via the
Efficient, Sport and Sport Plus modes. The two M1 and M2 buttons on
the M leather steering wheel can be used to store two set-ups
combining the driver’s preference of engine, transmission, suspension
and M xDrive modes, the DSC mode and Head-Up-Display settings. The
driver can then activate their preferred set-up by pressing the
relevant button.

The new BMW M5 includes revisions to its bodywork over the regular
BMW 5 Series to satisfy its challenging dynamic brief. The M engineers
have redesigned the broader front side panels and front bumper trim to
include larger apertures for the air feeding the cooling systems and
brakes. Also new is the rear diffuser. The exhaust system’s quartet of
tailpipes are a visual pointer to the power generated by the BMW M5
and also lay on a suitably sporting soundtrack for the job in hand,
courtesy of their flap control system. The driver can use a button to
adjust the engine sound as desired.

The bonnet, which also has an M-specific design, is made from
aluminium and boasts eye-catching sculpture lines. These extend into
the extremely lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof
– a standard feature of the new M5. The weight savings contributed by
the CFRP roof and other components such as the exhaust system help to
ensure the new BMW M5 with M xDrive all-wheel drive is lighter than
its predecessor.

The new BMW M5 is fitted as standard with M compound brakes, which
are lighter than conventional grey cast iron items and therefore also
bring down the car’s weight. With blue-painted six-piston fixed
callipers at the front and single-piston floating callipers at the
rear, plus perforated, inner-vented brake discs all round, the M
compound brakes have the speed-shedding power to befit the car’s
dynamic potency. The optional M carbon ceramic brakes, which can be
identified by callipers painted in a gold colour and shave another
23 kilograms off the M5’s weight, can withstand even greater punishment.

The new BMW M5 comes as standard with polished 19-inch light-alloy
wheels (front: 9.5 x 19, rear: 10.5 x 19) in Orbit Grey and M-specific
tyres (front: 275/40 R 19, rear: 285/40 R 19). 20-inch items can be
specified as an option (front: 275/35 R 20 tyres on 9.5 x 20 rims,
rear: 285/35 R 20 tyres on 10.5 x 20 rims). Standard specification for
the new BMW M5 also features Merino leather and M seats with electric
adjustment. The options list includes newly developed M multifunction
seats, which stand out with their bucket-seat-style construction and
even better lateral support.

The new BMW M5 can be ordered from September 2017, priced at
€117,900, and deliveries will begin in spring 2018. In South Africa,
the new BMW M5 will be available in the first quarter of 2018. Local
pricing and specifications will be available before the end of 2017.

Scheduled for launch on the same sales start date as the standard M5
is the BMW M5 First Edition. This special-edition version – limited to
a run of 400 examples worldwide – has BMW Individual Frozen Dark Red
Metallic paintwork, is exclusively appointed and costs an extra
€19,500 over the standard model. The BMW M5 First Editon will also be
available in South Africa in very limited numbers.

Munich. The new BMW M5 (fuel consumption combined:
10.5 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 241 g/km) is the most exciting
and emotionally enthralling high-performance sedan from this model
range ever released by BMW M. The sixth generation of this
fantastically sporty machine will be launched in 2017 complete with
the M xDrive system, whose all-wheel-drive technology enables the
business sedan’s dynamic prowess to be experienced in even greater
depth. Quite apart from its notably enhanced performance, the new BMW
M5 also boasts far greater everyday practicality and supreme poise. It
therefore constitutes another evolutionary step in every respect for
an exceedingly successful vehicle concept that first emerged in 1984
with the launch of the original BMW M5.

A superior drivetrain: M xDrive.

High-performance driving dynamics on the one hand paired with the
everyday practicality and qualities of a business sedan on the other:
this neatly sums up M’s traditional approach to model development –
one which strives to harmonise individual drive components into a
flawless whole.

“The core component of M xDrive is a central intelligence unit with
M-specific software delivering integrated control of longitudinal and
lateral dynamics. The new drivetrain technology – making its debut on
the new BMW M5 – therefore combines all of the agility and precision
of standard rear-wheel drive with the supreme poise and traction of
the all-wheel-drive system,” explains Frank van Meel, Chairman of the
Board of Management of BMW M GmbH. “As a result, the new BMW M5 can be
piloted with the familiar blend of sportiness and unerring accuracy on
both the race track and the open road – and in various weather
conditions, too.”

The M xDrive system enables a wonderfully fleet-footed rear-biased
set-up by only bringing the front wheels into play when the rear
wheels aren’t able to transmit any more power to the road and
additional tractive force is required. Even when it is being driven in
a particularly sporty manner and unleashing high levels of power, the
new BMW M5 with M xDrive behaves predictably and can be controlled
with ease by the driver, paving the way for an even richer experience
of the business sedan’s extraordinary performance capabilities.

The driver can choose from five different configurations based on
combinations of the DSC modes (DSC on, MDM, DSC off) and M xDrive
modes (4WD, 4WD Sport, 2WD).

The configurations allow the drive system’s characteristics to be
tailored to both the driver’s personal preferences and the nature of
the journey. Purists can opt for classical rear-wheel drive by
completely deactivating the all-wheel-drive system.

All in all, the new drive system engenders class-beating handling
dynamics accompanied by unrestricted everyday usability. This is made
possible by a central intelligence unit with M-specific software for
integrated control of longitudinal and lateral dynamics. The result is
optimum performance in each of the different configurations. With the
advent of M xDrive, the engineers have succeeded in fusing the
classical qualities of standard rear-wheel drive with the benefits of
the sports-focused BMW xDrive.

This all adds up to a sense of dynamic flair that astounds even
seasoned DTM drivers: “I’m a big M5 fan,” explains BMW works driver
Timo Glock, for example. “I often drive long distances and I need
plenty of room for my family, but I wouldn’t wish to give up the
chance to explore the car’s sporting character. With M xDrive, not
only can the new BMW M5 be steered with the usual precision and
agility, it also offers me something I really appreciate, living in
Switzerland: a noticeable boost to traction and controllability – even
when driving in particular environmental conditions, such as wet
weather and snow, and in both everyday driving situations and when
pushing the car to its performance limits.”

Sportiness and smoothness: eight-speed M Steptronic
transmission with Drivelogic.

In the new BMW M5 the task of relaying the engine’s power falls to an
extremely slick eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.
Thanks to its incredibly short shift times and optimal ratio spacing,
the transmission combines with the new M xDrive system and the further
improved turbocharged V8 engine to form a perfectly orchestrated whole.

In addition, the transmission offers impressively smooth start-off
characteristics, makes manoeuvring easier and has a wide ratio spread
that helps to keep fuel consumption low. The driver has the usual
choice of three shift programs, as well as the option of changing gear
manually using shift paddles on the steering wheel and even performing
sporty multiple downshifts. The eight-speed M Steptronic forms part of
a new, finely honed overall package that turns the BMW M5 into a
high-performance sedan offering genuine everyday practicality, and
also resolves the apparent contradiction between sportiness and comfort.

More powerful and more efficient: the newly improved
turbocharged V8 engine.

Lurking under the bonnet of the new BMW M5 is the latest version of
the 4.4‑litre V8 engine featuring M TwinPower Turbo technology. The
further improved high-revving engine outperforms its predecessor in
terms of power output and torque. The enhancements implemented by the
engineers include higher injection pressure, new turbochargers, more
powerful lubrication and cooling systems, plus a modified, lighter
exhaust system, which generates an even clearer rendition of the
unmistakable M soundtrack. Thus equipped, the V8 propels the sedan to
still greater feats of dynamic performance. However, it is the
combination of engine, M xDrive and eight-speed M Steptronic, even
more than the upgrading of engine’s technical specifications, that
really sharpens the high-performance character of the new BMW M5; it
takes the dynamic driving experience to a far higher level than the
relatively moderate increase in power alone would allow.

Hardware and software with an M-specific set-up.

The principal hardware components of M xDrive are based on those of
the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system and the Active M
Differential, while the M-specific driving dynamics control software
ensures innovative deployment. The drivetrain has been reinforced for
greater rigidity and strength to factor in the high torque,
rear-biased configuration and 2WD option. While the transfer case
splits a portion of the engine’s drive between the front and rear
wheels in a smoothly adjustable ratio (depending on requirements), the
Active M Differential is responsible for then distributing the drive
between the rear wheels. This active control element is part of the M
xDrive system’s functionality and its locking effect can be varied
between zero and 100 per cent, as the situation demands. This ensures
enhanced traction, agility and handling stability when the car is
being driven in a very sporty manner or on roads with differing levels
of grip – i.e. exactly when it is needed. Since M xDrive includes
M-specific dynamics control capability, stabilising interventions from
the DSC system are only required in extreme situations. And so the
engine’s huge power can be converted into propulsive force with
virtually zero losses. The upshot of all this is that the new BMW M5
can be guided with even greater precision and directional accuracy,
responds sensitively and directly to the driver’s inputs and thus
requires few steering corrections when driving at the limit.

À la carte handling dynamics: 4WD, 4WD Sport or 2WD.

Every time the engine is started, the BMW M5 defaults to 4WD mode
with DSC on. Even in this basic configuration, which initially allows
a certain amount of slip at the rear wheels to produce the agility for
which M models are renowned, M xDrive offers tangible benefits in
situations such as accelerating out of bends. The sedan completes the
0 to 100 km/h or 200 km/h sprints in the sort of times that leave its
predecessor trailing in its wake and will make fans of sporty driving
everywhere instantly prick up their ears.

Drivers with an even greater thirst for sporty action can tap into
the car’s full performance potential by engaging a second
configuration: M Dynamic Mode (MDM) with the M xDrive system’s 4WD
Sport mode has been configured for ultra-sporty and dynamic handling.
As a result, the new BMW M5 becomes far more agile than in the
standard configuration and channels even more drive to the rear
wheels. At the same time, MDM permits far greater wheel slip, allowing
the enthusiastic driver to send the sedan into a controlled drift and
experience the remarkable agility of the new BMW M5 – a familiar trait
of M models – to the full. The onset of oversteer is telegraphed in
good time while the linear increase of sideslip angle makes it easily
controllable, particularly as MDM aids stability at the limits of performance.

With DSC deactivated, there is a choice of three modes (4WD, 4WD
Sport and 2WD). In 4WD mode, M xDrive has a neutral set-up that lends
itself to optimum controllability and outstanding traction. This is of
particular benefit on roads that are in mediocre or poor condition. At
the same time, 4WD mode also lets the driver explore the dynamic
performance capabilities of the new BMW M5 with the DSC control system deactivated.

Engaging 4WD Sport mode alters the M xDrive configuration for even
greater agility and sportiness. The blend of absolute precision,
delightful handling and phenomenal traction it reveals is a sure-fire
route to supreme driving pleasure. 4WD Sport mode’s set-up has been
fine-tuned with the assistance of highly experienced specialists and
is geared towards track use in dry conditions.

With 2WD mode activated, the new BMW M5 offers the keen driver the
experience of driving a high-performance sedan with rear-wheel drive
only, delivering a pure form of driving enjoyment that captivates in
its own unique way. The combination of incredibly agile handling,
terrific feel and exceptional controllability can be attributed to the Active M Differential.

The display and control concept.

The driver-focused cockpit of the new BMW M5 now has an even clearer
layout courtesy of the lowered instrument panel with freestanding
Control Display. The M-style instrument cluster featuring two
classical circular dials and red needles also accommodates an
additional digital speedometer on the left-hand side, while the rev
counter on the right includes a variable rpm pre-warning field and
sporty shift lights when the Head-Up Display is switched on. In the
centre of the instrument cluster, the driver will find the readouts
for the gear selection, Drivelogic shift program, M xDrive mode and
M1/M2 set-up, plus the drive and suspension settings currently
engaged. When the Head-Up Display is activated, key information can be
projected onto the windscreen so it appears in the driver’s immediate
field of view. The graphics of the M view option developed for dynamic
driving have been completely revised and M view now also allows
navigation information to be displayed, if desired. The projection
area of the Head-Up Display in the new BMW M5 has increased in size by
around 70 per cent.

On top of the redesigned gear selector can be found the
three-position rocker switch for selecting the Drivelogic shift
programs. The P button below it for the parking lock is also within
easy reach. In typical M fashion, the gears of the new eight-speed M
Steptronic transmission can be changed using both the selector lever
and the shift paddles on the steering wheel, while drivers can also
opt for the automated D mode. In the manual S mode, meanwhile, the M
Steptronic allows multiple downshifts, resulting in a significant
reduction in shift times when performing sporty driving manoeuvres,
such as braking hard into corners.

As on the outgoing model, the M sports steering wheel includes two
individually configurable M Drive buttons (M1, M2) that allow the
driver to retrieve a previously stored set-up. The buttons have been
completely redesigned and are prominently located. This ensures they
are even easier to reach and, in customary M style, offer excellent
speed of use. As well as the M xDrive mode and the Drivelogic shift
program, the engine and damper mapping, Servotronic steering
characteristics and readouts in the Head-Up Display can also be
memorised. The desired settings can be stored via the iDrive menu. An
icon in the instrument cluster indicates to the driver when a stored
M1/M2 set-up is activated.

A short press of the DSC button in the centre console activates M
Dynamic Mode (MDM) and a long press engages DSC off mode. When DSC off
mode is activated, the M xDrive settings menu appears in the Control
Display at the same time. Plus, it is now possible to select 4WD, 4WD
Sport or 2WD mode using either the iDrive Controller or the
touchscreen function. The mode activated is displayed in the
instrument cluster and can also be saved as part of an M Drive set-up...

Press Contact: Edward Makwana
Tel: +27-12-522-2227
E-mail: edward.makwana@bmw.co.za

Press Release,M5,Product,BMW M

Munich.
The BMW M Division has developed an exclusive special edition of
the world’s most successful high-performance business sedan, setting
yet another highlight in the current BMW M5 model range. With power
output increased to 441 kW and a maximum torque of 700 Newton
metres, the BMW M5 “Competition Edition” ranks among the most
powerful automobiles in the model history of the BMW brand
(combined fuel consumption: 9.9 l/100 km; combined CO2
emissions: 231 g/km)*. The BMW M5 “Competition Edition”, which
comes as standard with an M dual clutch transmission featuring
Drivelogic, sprints from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds. A
distinctive personalised look, the standard Competition Package and
a comprehensive range of optional features render the BMW M5
“Competition Edition”, the production of which is limited to 200, an
automobile of exceptionally high value. Only six units will be made
available in South Africa from November 2016.

More power and further enhanced handling characteristics.

The familiar 4.4‑litre, high-revving V8 engine featuring
path-breaking BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology is the powerful heart
of the BMW M5 “Competition Edition”. An increase in boost pressure
as well as targeted modifications to the engine management raise the
car’s performance vs. the production model by 29 kW to 441 kW. At
the same time, maximum torque has increased by 20 Newton metres to
700 Newton metres.

The increase in power output harmonises perfectly with the
Competition Package, which is supplied as standard on the BMW M5
“Competition Edition” and noticeably enhances the car’s handling
characteristics even further. The Competition Package includes,
inter alia, a lowering of the vehicle by 10 millimetres and a firmer
setup of spring and damper systems and stabilizers. In conjunction
with this modified setup, the specific control setting for the
Active M differential fitted as standard on all BMW M5 models
ensures further optimized traction. Furthermore, the steering system
with an M specific Servotronic function comes with a more direct
control map, providing the driver with more precise response and
further enhancing the car’s agility in bends. In addition, the M
Dynamic Mode of the stability control system DSC (Dynamic Stability
Control) has been further aligned to sporty handling
characteristics. As a result, the BMW M5 “Competition Edition”
guarantees typical M driving dynamics at the highest level both in
everyday traffic and on the racetrack, especially when combined with
the optional M carbon-ceramic brake system.

Exclusive sporty and dynamic look.

The BMW M5 “Competition Edition” signalises its extraordinary
potential even when at a standstill. The exclusive body colours –100
vehicles in Carbon Black metallic and 100 in Mineral White metallic
respectively – strongly emphasise the BMW M5’s sporty, elegant
lines. Only the Mineral White metallic will be available in South
Africa. And the 20-inch, forged and polished, double-spoke M light
alloy wheels in a Jet Black finish and with mixed tyres
(265/35 ZR20 at the front, 295/30 ZR20 at the rear) underscore
the car’s outstanding handling characteristics. M Performance parts in
carbon such as the rear diffuser, the gurney on the boot lid and the
mirror caps set further dynamic accents. The high gloss black kidney
grilles and side gills bearing the lettering ”M5 Competition” add the
finishing touches to the car's premium appearance.

High-quality ambience with sporty accents in the interior.

The interior also underscores the uniqueness of the BMW M5
“Competition Edition”. For example, carbon interior trim strips
bearing the logo “M5 Competition 1/200” indicate the model’s
high-performance qualities and the fact that the BMW M5 “Competition
Edition” is just one of the 200 that have been built. The

Midrand – BMW South Africa has created an exclusive,
special-edition of the current fifth-generation BMW M5 model boasting
performance that sets it apart from its stable mates. The BMW M5 Pure
Metal Edition will be available in a limited number of 20 vehicles
from this month (October 2015).

Developing 441kW and peak torque of 700Nm, this special-edition is
the most powerful BMW M5 ever to emerge from series production under
the auspices of BMW M GmbH. The M5 Pure Metal Edition sprints from 0
to 100km/h in 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 305km/h.

Its BMW Individual-inspired looks, as well as dynamic and
comfort-enhancing equipment, make this special edition BMW M5 a highly
desirable collector’s item.

Under the bonnet of the BMW M5 Pure Metal Edition is a 4.4-litre V8
engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an output of 441kW, which
is 29kW higher than the standard BMW M5 and 18kW higher than the
Competition Package. This power boost has been achieved through
carefully calculated modifications to the engine management system and
an increase in charge pressure.

The Competition Package comprises modifications including a revised
chassis set-up with firmer spring/damper tuning and a 10mm drop in
ride height. Added to which, the Active M Differential on the final
drive gains its own control unit to further improve traction. In
addition, the steering with M specific Servotronic function has more
direct mapping and the M Dynamic Mode of the Dynamic Stability Control
(DSC) system is focused even more on delivering sporty handling
characteristics. M Carbon Ceramic Brakes ensure the car is brought to
a standstill in a safe distance, yet offering superb braking on the
race track.

The foundation for these upgrades was provided by the Competition
Package – a package that already came with a power upgrade. Conceived
to appreciably enrich the handling characteristics of the BMW M5, it
can be ordered as an option for the regular model and is part of the
special edition’s standard specification along with the M Driver’s package.

The special-edition model has been given the BMW Individual
treatment. As a result, it cuts a more dynamic, head-turning figure
than its standard siblings. The striking BMW Individual Pure Metal
Silver Metallic paint and 20” M Double spoke alloy wheels accentuates
the elegantly muscular forms of this limited edition BMW M5.

A plaque bearing ‘PURE METAL M5’ and ‘1/20’ inscription is integrated
into the Dark Aluminium Trace interior trim.

Both the driver and front passenger in the M5 Pure Metal Edition can
settle into M Sport multifunction seats, upholstered in full leather
Merino Fine grain, black with contrast stitching in Silverstone.

In addition to the exclusive content, the BMW M5 Pure Metal Edition
also comes standard with the Comfort Access feature with smart opener,
Driving Assist and Lumbar support.

Pricing for this limited edition model will be R1, 948, 000 (incl.
VAT, excl. CO2 Tax).

Munich. They are high-performance sports cars, each
with an individual character and all sharing the claim of turning
superior performance attributes into an incomparable driving
experience. In the BMW M5 and in the BMW M6 Coupe, BMW M6 Convertible
and BMW M6 Gran Coupe models, race track technology is brought to the
road. The ensuing hallmark M driving characteristics now present
themselves in an even more intense, concentrated and impressive guise.
From July 2013 orders, BMW M GmbH will be offering the Competition
Package as an option for the four most powerful automobiles in the
model portfolio. Its features open up a new dimension of dynamics in
customary BMW M style.

The Competition Package was specifically conceived to enhance
handling properties, in adherence to the principle applied to the
development of all BMW M automobiles: fine-tuning the suspension
technology to the performance curve of the engine to bring maximum
performance in line with consistently superlative responses that are
precision-controllable even in highly dynamic driving situations.

The Competition Package boosts output by 11 kW to 423 kW in the
high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower turbo technology that powers
the BMW M5, BMW M6 Coupe, BMW M6 Convertible and BMW M6 Gran Coupe
models. At the same time, the developers at BMW M GmbH have applied
extensive modifications to the chassis set-up. Along with the
suspension and damping systems, the stabiliser bars have also been
more tautly tuned. In the BMW M5 this adjustment has resulted in a
lowering of the car by around 10 millimetres. The potential inherent
in the rear axle design – based on the race-derived principle of the
rear axle subframe being bolted to the body – and the even more
precisely calculated elastokinematics for the front axle are exploited
to the full in the models featuring the Competition Package, with the
aim of enhancing driving precision.

The Active M Differential on the final drive – standard on all models
– is also issued with its own control unit in conjunction with the
Competition Package. In combination with the modified set-up for the
suspension, damping and stabiliser bars, this results in further
improved traction. The new hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering with the
M-specific Servotronic function, moreover, has more direct mapping to
enable firm and secure contact with the road while further increasing
the agility of the vehicle during cornering.

Beyond this, the configuration of the chassis control systems has
been adapted to the specific suspension profile. With the Competition
Package, the M Dynamic mode of the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control)
system is even more acutely geared to sporty handling characteristics.
The package additionally includes exclusively designed 20-inch
M light-alloy wheels along with a sport exhaust system featuring
customary M twin tailpipes in black chrome that lend an unmistakable
sporty note to both the look and the sound of the car.

The further enhanced high-performance profile of the engine, chassis
and sound experience courtesy of the Competition Package also has a
positive impact on the vehicle set-up, which can be configured at the
press of a button by selecting the Comfort, Sport or Sport+ modes.
This makes for an even greater range between a supremely relaxed
driving style and emotion-laden sportiness in the overall set-up of
the relevant model. This more pronounced differentiation is most
noticeable when spontaneously switching the set-up with the help of
the M Drive buttons on the steering wheel.

The contents of the Competition Package make for optimised
performance characteristics in all models, as demonstrated for example
by 0.1 seconds being shaved off the standstill to 100 km/h sprint time
and 0.2 seconds when accelerating from zero to 200 km/h. Cornering
dynamics and elasticity are also enhanced – something that is
noticeable in everyday driving but most powerfully experienced on the
race track. In particular in conjunction with the optional M carbon
ceramic brakes, all the driving dynamics attributes associated with
BMW M automobiles are experienced at the highest level.

Local pricing for the new Competition Package will be confirmed at
the end of May 2013.

Press Contact: Edward Makwana
Tel: +27-12-522-2227
E-mail: edward.makwana@bmw.co.za

Press Release,M6,M5,Product,BMW M

Munich. Emphasisplaced judiciously on certain areas
of design enhances the enjoyment of the superior driving experience in
the BMW M5 high-performance sedan. In parallel with the launch of the
new BMW 5 Series Sedan, the new BMW 5 Series Touring and the new BMW 5
Series Gran Turismo, BMW M GmbH’s most successful model is also
undergoing a carefully devised revision. Fine-tuned design underscores
the hallmark M athleticism and challenging presence of the new BMW M5,
while the optional Competition Package, new equipment features and a
further extended range of BMW ConnectedDrive features emphasise its
innovative character.

The BMW M5 is driven by a 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo
technology and peak output of 412 kW. In combination with the
seven-speed M dual-clutch transmission, the Active M Differential at
the rear axle and model-specific suspension technology precisely tuned
to the performance curve with racing know-how, this high-revving power
unit guarantees outstanding dynamic driving performance. For a further
boost in performance, the Competition Package now comes as an optional
extra with features that tap into a new dimension of dynamics in
trademark BMW M style.

The Competition Package was specifically devised to boost the
handling properties of the BMW M5. With the Competition
Package, which will be available from July 2013 orders, the output of
the high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology is raised
by 11 kW to 423 kW. In addition, the newly developed M carbon ceramic
brakes have been available as an option since March 2013.

A particularly striking innovation in the appearance of the BMW M5 is
the M “kidney grille”, which now features the model designation and
whose slats cite the double-spoke design of the M light alloys. In
addition to standard xenon headlights, there is now the option of
Adaptive LED Headlights which emit a particularly bright white light
generated by a pair of LED units situated horizontally in the middle
of each light ring. A standard feature on the BMW M5 are the
new-design tail lights with strikingly thin LED light strips that
generate a high contrast and add to the unmistakable night-time look.

The hallmark M feeling is also conveyed by the M leather steering
wheel, whose new design likewise takes visual cues from the
double-spoke wheels. The interior of the sedan has also gained an
increase in volume of the storage compartment under the armrest in the
centre console area. The Control Display of the standard-fitted iDrive
operating system now features chrome trim on the sides. For the first
time, an optional Touch Controller is available with a touch-sensitive
surface allowing, for example, characters to be entered when
programming a destination for the navigation system.

As of July orders, BMW Individual will be offering a range of new
exterior colours for the BMW M5 (Pure Metal Silver, Pyrite Brown
metallic, Frozen Blue metallic and further BMW Individual matt
paintwork finishes), as well as exclusive leather shades (Cashmere
Beige and Nutmeg). With the BMW Individual paintwork Pure Metal
Silver, for example, the body takes on a deep, brilliant lustre. This
unique metallic gleam is down to the combination of a special-effect
pigment with a water-based paint system. The addition of ultra-thin
aluminium flakes guarantees a uniform and gleaming surface. Depending
on the angle of view, these flakes create a light-dark contrast and
accentuate the surfaces of the body. This paintwork showcases the
model’s lines and contours to even better effect and adds striking
touches to the vehicle’s design.

The further extended range of features from BMW ConnectedDrive also
ensures that the new BMW M5 is in pole position in its sector when it
comes to intelligent connectivity. Innovative driver assistance
systems and mobility services optimise safety and comfort while
driving as well as the use of infotainment programmes. The new Driving
Assistant system combines Lane Departure Warning with Collision
Warning including braking function. Its camera, mounted in the
windscreen area, registers vehicles and pedestrians and gives the
driver visual and acoustic warning signals if a potential collision is
detected. In critical situations, moderate hazard braking is actuated.
The glare-free High Beam Assistant is now also optionally available
for the BMW M5, while the Lane Change Warning system can now be used
from a speed of 20 km/h.

The new Online Entertainment option, meanwhile, makes for a
particularly varied audio programme. It allows online access to a
music database containing around 12 million tracks. In conjunction
with the Navigation System Professional and the ConnectedDrive
Services option, additional features are available, among them
Concierge Services, Remote Services and Real Time Traffic Information.
Some of the ConnectedDrive features will not be offered in South Africa.

Press Contact: Edward Makwana
Tel: +27-12-522-2227
E-mail: edward.makwana@bmw.co.za

Press Release,M5,Product,BMW M

The new BMW M5 is poised to build on the tradition of its predecessors and once again redefine the performance experience available in a four-door car. Displaying the conceptual harmony, state-of-the-art technology and astonishingly dynamic handling for which BMW M cars have become renowned, the fifth-generation BMW M5 stirs the passion of keen drivers for top performance and blends it, in inimitable style, with the universal qualities of a top-class premium saloon. The most powerful engine ever fitted in a series-produced model from BMW M GmbH, the innovative Active M Differential – which optimises power transfer to the rear wheels – and model-specific chassis technology developed on the back of extensive racing expertise all secure the BMW M5 a dominant position in the high-performance saloon market.</pp:summary>

The new BMW M5 is a high-performance sports car whose exceptional
dynamic potential is geared squarely to the demands of track use yet
which also sets a new benchmark in everyday driving with its supreme
touring comfort and innovative equipment features. It also sets the
pace in its class in terms of efficiency. The car’s history of success
in a segment founded more than 25 years ago by the original BMW M5 is
set to continue in thrillingly contemporary style.

Under the bonnet of the new BMW M5 lies a newly developed,
high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo (consisting of Twin
Scroll Twin Turbo technology, a cross-bank exhaust manifold, High
Precision Injection petrol direct injection and VALVETRONIC fully
variable valve control), maximum output of 412 kW at 6,000 – 7,000 rpm
and peak torque of 680 Newton metres between 1,500 and 5,750 rpm. The
instantaneous power delivery and sustained thrust familiar from M cars
are the key to acceleration of 0 – 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds (0 – 200
km/h in 13.0 seconds). Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle
stands at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres (CO2 emissions: 232 g/km).
While output has increased by around 10 per cent and maximum torque is
up by more than 30 per cent, the new BMW M5 burns over 30 per cent
less fuel than its predecessor.

The significantly improved balance between the performance-focused M
experience and the car’s fuel consumption stems from the exceptionally
impressive efficiency of the new V8 engine and from far-reaching
Efficient Dynamics technology including the Auto Start-Stop function
in conjunction with the standard seven-speed M Double Clutch
Transmission Drivelogic. In order to channel the engine’s imposing
power development into inspiring performance characteristics, the new
BMW M5 boasts chassis technology – including electronically controlled
dampers, M-specific Servotronic steering, a stability control system
with M Dynamic Mode and high-performance compound brakes – developed
on the back of racing expertise and tuned to the output profile of the powerplant.

This technology combines with model-specific design features – which
make a direct contribution to optimising the supply of cooling air and
enhancing aerodynamic characteristics – to create the conceptual
harmony typical of BMW M cars. The precise interplay of the drive
system, chassis and design has been refined in extensive and detailed
testing on the Nordschleife circuit at the Nürburgring, to ensure
unbeatable longitudinal and lateral acceleration, handling
characteristics and braking performance.

After being on sale on the global automotive market for five successful years, the BMW M5 has ended its production lifespan with a new record high. The BMW M GmbH produced a total of 20,548 of the charismatic high-performance sports car featuring a V
10-cylinder power unit. The BMW M5 Saloon is accountable for 19,523 of these, with the BMW M5 Touring, which was first launched in 2007, contributing a further 1025 units towards the overall result.</pp:summary>

This means that even the production figures of the predecessor model,
which was manufactured for a period of six years, have been surpassed.
The BMW M GmbH sees this record result as a further chapter in the
success story of a remarkable automobile, which

reaches back as far as the year 1984. 26 years ago we saw the launch
of the first BMW M5 – this also marking the birth of the high
performance saloon segment. Drive and suspension technology inspired
by motor sports combined with the spaciousness and travelling comfort
of a midrange saloon car: When the first BMW M5 was launched, this
concept brought about an entirely new vehicle category. With
M-specific aesthetics and thanks to uncompromising premium quality,
the new model was at the same time the first high-performance sports
car designed for use in everyday traffic conditions. With the fifth
generation of the BMW M5, this combination achieved a level of
fascination it had never reached before. A V10 high-revving 373 kW/507
bhp engine, sequential M transmission Drivelogic with seven gears and
Launch Control for maximum acceleration from a standstill, variable,
engine speed-dependent M differential lock as well as model-specific
suspension technology, including Electronic Damper Control (EDC) and a
compound brake unit, guarantee the BMW M5’s outstanding performance
characteristics. High-quality equipment features, which include
innovative driver assistance systems such as AdaptiveHeadlights and
M-specific Head-up Display, underline its premium character.

As an all-round athlete, dominating both the highly dynamic sprint
and longer distances, the latest generation, too, is capturing a
unique position within the competitive environment. In 2007, the
saloon, which was also dubbed by the media as a “businessman’s
express”, was joined by the BMW M5 Touring. This model offered a
second body variant that enriched the character of the sports car,
which was unrestrictedly suitable for everyday use, with additional
facets. The USA also proved to be the most crucial sales market for
the fifth generation of the BMW M Saloon. 8,800 vehicles were sold in
the United States. Ahead of the German market (1,647 units), Great
Britain and Ireland developed the greatest demand on the European
continent with 1,776 vehicles sold. Japan (1,357 units) takes fourth
place among the most significant markets for the BMW M5 Saloon,
followed by Italy (512). The BMW M5 Touring enjoyed the greatest
popularity in Germany (302 units), Great Britain and Ireland (208) and
in Italy (184).

A distinctive feature of both models is the 5-litre, ten-cylinder
engine with a high-revving concept. The power unit, which was
conceived using comprehensive expertise derived from motor sports,
develops maximum output at an engine speed of 7,750 rpm, disclosing its

unique character in particular through enormous pulling power that
remains available across a remarkably broad speed range. Its
exceptional position has been underlined by numerous awards. For
example, in the years 2005 and 2006, the V10 engine seized overall
victory twice in succession at the “Engine of the Year Awards” as well
as first place during each of the two following years in the engine
category exceeding a cubic capacity of 4 litres. Even after completion
of the BMW M5’s production lifespan, the 10-cylinder engine continues
to fascinate in a very special way.

The exceptional power unit with identical power output and
performance characteristics is currently featured in both the BMW M6
Coupe and the BMW M6 Convertible. The limited BMW M6 Competition
Edition offers a particularly elegant way of expressing the
high-performance coupe’s superior dynamics. A unique BMW Individual
Frozen Grey paint finish

and an individual interior design provide the coupe with an exclusive
high-quality ambience.

The BMW Individual full Merino leather trim is available either in
black with light grey contrast seams or in the bicolour version
Silverstone/Black with light grey and black contrast seams. In both
cases, the coupe’s individual character is underlined by doorsill
trims boasting the “M6 Competition” logo.

After all, it’s not everyday that you get a sports car with roof rails, a 373 kW engine combined with 1,650 litres of storage space, or a power-to-weight ratio of 198.4 kW per ton allied to a maximum trailer load of 1,800 kg.</pp:summary>

Yet the new BMW M5 Touring - with acceleration from 0–100 km/h in 4.8
seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited) – appeals
to both of these human senses, simply by uniting seemingly
incompatible contradictions to form one harmonious whole. Best of
all, this family rocket ship is now available in South Africa by
special order only.

As the only BMW 5 Series Touring on sale locally, the new BMW M5
Touring’s five-litre V10 engine with maximum output of 373 kW and peak
torque of 520 Newton-metres provides the kind of muscle and
performance otherwise only to be admired in a thoroughbred sports or
racing car. Indeed, the engine’s high-speed concept so typical of BMW
M comes directly from motorsport, with this multiple award winning
power unit reaching speeds of up to
8,250 rpm and converting
these impressive performance figures into a fascinating, truly
unmistakable driving experience.

Ever since the start of series production in 2005, the V10 has
received no less than seven prizes in the World Engine-of-the-Year Award.

One hundred per cent sports car, one hundred per cent Touring.

As a truly versatile business, family and leisure time car, the BMW
M5 Touring offers a fascinating symbiosis of features previously
regarded as incompatible –
a thoroughbred sports car on hand, a
practical five-door family saloon on the other. Perfect interaction of
the high-speed power unit and the Sequential M Gearbox (SMG) as well
as a chassis designed for supreme driving dynamics, turns the BMW M5
Touring into a truly unique estate car offering unparalleled
performance also on the race track. And at the same time the driver
of a BMW M5 Touring has every opportunity to enjoy the superior
potential of his or her sports car under practical conditions in
everyday motoring. So in a nutshell, the new BMW M5 Touring brings
together 100 per cent sports car and 100 per cent Touring to offer 100

With its performance figures, the fourth-generation M5 once again
sets the benchmark in the segment of powerful sports saloons, a niche
which the first M5 carved for itself back in 1984. During the last
20 years, this first M5
and all its successors have made their
mark, always setting the standard as a perfect symbiosis of a
comfortable, elegant saloon for everyday use,
abundant output
delivered by a powerful engine and ultimate sportiness.
With
sales figures exceeding 20,000, the M5 has proved to be an
economically successful concept which combines prodigious performance
with understatement, a basic feature of all M automobiles.

This principle reaches its culmination in the new M5: this “extreme
athlete” with its subtle appearance and the seemingly endless power of
its ten-cylinder high-revving engine, which interacts perfectly with
the seven-speed SMG gearbox, introduces the driver to completely new
dimensions of effortlessness. To put it in a nutshell: in its class,
which it shares with top-class competitors, the M5 excels due to the
most innovative drive concept, the best power-to-weight ratio, supreme
handling and excellent everyday driving qualities. It is a fully
roadworthy saloon with the heart of an athlete, a sports car which is
perfectly suited for everyday motoring. The new M5 skilfully combines
these two virtues.

First high-revving V10 engine to be featured in
a

The V10 is the only high-revving power unit to be featured in a

With superior dynamic performance on the road and outstanding traction on rough terrain, the BMW X5 has been on an unstoppable course for success for ten years. BMW presented the first generation of the all-wheel-drive five-door vehicle at the North American International Auto Show in 1999, thereby founding the segment of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). The world premiere marked the start of an unprecedented success story. Within one decade, over 845,000 units of the BMW X5 were sold. As a result of the consistent further development of the SAV concept, there are now three BMW X models to choose from, with a fourth ready for serial production in 2009. What is more, the BMW X5 became the key inspiration for the entire competitive field of all-wheel-drive vehicles. In its anniversary year, with the BMW X5 now in its second generation, the vehicle remains the role model and benchmark of its class in terms of driving dynamics, efficiency, versatility, premium quality and safety.</pp:summary>

From the very beginning, the key to the success of the BMW X5 lay in
its combination of two fascinating qualities which had never been
realised in any vehicle previously. The new model successfully
transferred characteristic BMW driving pleasure into a completely new
market segment. For the very first time, the spacious, permanently
four-wheel driven BMW X5 combined the driving dynamics of a BMW sedan
with supreme mobility away from asphalted road surfaces. Its integral
safety body and independent wheel suspension clearly set the BMW X5
apart from conventional off-road vehicles, with the driving stability
system DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) including automatic
differential brake ADB-X (Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill
Descent Control) ensuring supreme driving qualities both on and off
the road.

Dynamic performance and versatility were also expressed in the design
of the vehicle. Another striking feature was the raised seating
position which instantly gave the driver the same sense of supremacy
which was provided by the chassis technology. In addition, the
spacious, versatile and high-quality interior provided a whole new
driving experience for an all-wheel-drive automobile.

The second generation of the BMW X5 launched in autumn 2006 saw a
consistent further development of the Sports Activity Vehicle’s
characteristic features. With its increased space comfort, luxurious
ambience, even more supreme drivetrain technology and innovative
chassis along with driver assistance systems, the new BMW X5 once
again sets the benchmark throughout the extended competitive field of
BMW X models. Like its predecessor it is produced at BMW’s North
American plant in Spartanburg and is the first BMW to potentially
provide seating for up to seven occupants. Its further developed
intelligent all-wheel drive BMW xDrive uniquely enhances both driving
dynamics on the road and traction over rough terrain. The permanent,
electronically controlled all-wheel drive, which is also networked
with the drive stability system DSC, distributes drive power variably
between the front and rear wheels.

With the success of the BMW X5, the foundation stone was laid for the
current status of BMW as the world’s most successful manufacturer of
premium all-wheel drive vehicles. What is more, numerous reputable
awards for the vehicle’s design, quality and safety reflect the
increased appeal of the large SAV models made by BMW. In 2007 the BMW
X5 received the design award “autonis” of the automobile journal “auto
motor und sport” for the most attractive design and a gold award in
the J.D. Power customer satisfaction study in North America, as well
as securing class victory in the “auto 1” competition of the
international “Auto Bild” Group. These prizes were followed in 2008 by
class victory in the “auto, motor und sport” readers’ vote “The best
cars”. Twice in succession, the BMW X5 also won a place among the
three vehicles with the most stable value in the German automobile
market, causing the magazine “Auto Bild” to pronounce it “Value Master
of the Year” in both 2007 and 2008.

As long ago as 2000, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
(IIHS) in the US declared the BMW X5 of the first generation to be the
safest vehicle ever to be subjected to one of its crash tests. In 2003
the SAV achieved the highest possible score of 5 stars on the
Euro-NCAP crash test. The current BMW X5 received the “Top Safety Pick
Award” for outstanding crash test results from the IIHS in both 2007
and 2008.

The BMW X5 of model year 2009 also occupies a leading position in the
area of efficiency. State-of-the-art 8 and 6-cylinder petrol engines
and outstandingly economical 6-cylinder diesel engines in combination
with current BMW EfficientDynamics measures ensure that the BMW X5
combines its excellent qualities with fuel consumption and exhaust
emission levels which are exemplary in its vehicle and output
category. This is also evidence that the development strategy BMW
EfficientDynamics has taken impressive effect in the segment of the
BMW X models, too. After all, the fuel consumption of all engine types
of the BMW X5 has been considerably reduced in the course of its
ten-year history – despite a significant increase in power. The BMW X5
xDrive48i of model year 2009 achieves an average fuel consumption of
12.1 litres per 100 kilometres in the EU test cycle – 13 per cent
lower than the BMW X5 4.4i of the year 2000 which had almost 70 bhp
less output. The BMW X5 xDrive30i surpasses its predecessor models by
41 bhp, yet it has an average fuel consumption level of just
10.3 litres per 100 kilometres, i.e. around 20 per cent less. In the
BMW X5 xDrive30d, the output has been increased by 51 bhp, but fuel
consumption has been cut by over 15 per cent to 8.2 litres per 100 kilometres.

Press Contact: Edward Makwana
Tel: +27-12-522-2227
E-mail: edward.makwana@bmw.co.za

Press Release,M5,Product,BMW M

This finest 5
Series vehicle is the most powerful of all time: five litres of cubic
capacity, ten cylinders, a maximum output of 507 bhp (373 kW), a peak
torque of 520 Newton metres and engine speeds redlining at 8,000 rpm,
these are figures that speak for themselves. In an unprecedented way,
these figures blur the lines between a car for everyday use and a
vehicle for ambitious motor sport racing. A successful recipe for two
decades: power without overstatement. With its performance figures, the
fourth-generation M5 once again sets the benchmark in the segment of
powerful sports saloons, a niche which the first M5 carved for itself
back in 1984. During the last 20 years, this first M5 and all its
successors have made their mark, always setting the standard as a
perfect symbiosis of a comfortable, elegant saloon for everyday use,
abundant output delivered by a powerful engine and ultimate sportiness.
With sales figures exceeding 20,000, the M5 has proved to be an
economically successful concept which combines prodigious performance
with understatement, a basic feature of all M automobiles. This
principle reaches its culmination in the new M5: this "extreme
athlete" with its subtle appearance and the seemingly endless
power of its ten-cylinder high-revving engine, which interacts
perfectly with the seven-speed SMG gearbox, introduces the driver to
completely new dimensions of effortlessness. To put it in a nutshell:
in its class, which it shares with top-class competitors, the M5 excels
due to the most innovative drive concept, the best power-to-weight
ratio, supreme handling and excellent everyday driving qualities. It is
a fully roadworthy saloon with the heart of an athlete, a sports car
which is perfectly suited for everyday motoring. The new M5 skilfully
combines these two virtues. First high-revving V10 engine to be
featured in a regular-production saloon. The V10 is the only
high-revving power unit to be featured in a series-production car.
Featured in the most powerful production car within the BMW model
family, this new engine once again sets the benchmark in its class.
There is, however, more to it than pure performance. What is important
for M automobiles is acceleration and driving dynamics, the latter
which is dependent on the actual forward thrust and the vehicle's
weight. The drive forces at the driven wheels are significantly
influenced by the engine torque and the total ratio. The high-revving
concept caters for an optimum transmission and rear-axle ratio, thus
guaranteeing an impressive forward thrust. The perfect choice:
high-revving concept. For the BMW M engineers the compact, high-revving
normally aspirated engine was the ideal choice. With a red line of
8,250 rpm, the ten-cylinder engine has ventured into terrain which has
so far been reserved for red-blooded racing cars. Compared to the
previous M5 eight-cylinder engine, performance has increased by more
than 25 percent. The M5 has also surpassed the magical 100 bhp per
litre limit, its specific output being on par with that of racing cars.
A masterpiece in engine construction. The two five-cylinder banks of
the V10 are arranged at an angle of 90° to achieve a mass balance
of the crankshaft drive, which is optimised for low vibration and
increased comfort. For reasons of stiffness and due to the high loads
resulting from combustion pressure, engine speed and vibrations, a
bedplate design has been chosen for the crankcase, the first-ever
application in a production V engine by BMW. For an optimum alignment
of the crankshaft, grey-cast iron inserts have been integrated into the
aluminium bedplate, which also serve to enhance acoustics, increase
vibrational comfort and ensure a high oil supply rate. The extremely
stiff crankshaft is supported by six bearings. High-pressure bi-VANOS
and individual throttle butterflies. The bi-VANOS variable valve timing
featured in the new M5 engine ensures an optimum charge cycle, thus
helping to achieve extremely short adjustment times. This means in
practice: increased performance, an improved torque curve, optimum
responsiveness, lower consumption and fewer emissions. Each cylinder
has its own throttle, a feature typical of racing cars. Throttle control
is fully electronic and cylinder bank specific. Dual exhaust system
made of stainless steel. The exhaust system is made of seamless
stainless steel and has a dual-flow design all the way to the
silencers. The exhaust gases finally leave the system through four
tailpipes which are what make the rear end of the M vehicles so
unmistakable. The exhaust system complies with the European EU4 and the
US LEV2 emission standards. The engine control module: the first of
its kind in the world. The MS S65 engine management system is the
central factor behind the V10's outstanding performance and emission
data. This engine management system is unparalleled in its package
density. Its processors are the most powerful ones which are currently
approved for use in automobiles, as high engine speeds and
comprehensive management and control tasks demand the utmost from this
system. Highlight in engine management: ionic current technology. The
ionic current technology featured by the engine management unit is a
technological highlight which serves to detect engine knock, misfiring
and combustion misses. Utilising the spark plug in each cylinder, this
system helps to pinpoint engine knock, to check for correct ignition
and to detect any ignition misses. Thus, the spark plug has a dual
function - as an actuator for the ignition and as a sensor for
monitoring the combustion process. Seven-speed SMG gearbox conveys M
power to the tarmac. The high-revving concept only succeeds in
combination with a gearbox which translates the torque available to the
engine, by means of a short overall transmission ratio, into optimised
forward thrust. The seven-speed SMG gearbox is precisely the right
transmission to ideally convey the V10 engine's power via the drive
train to the wheels. BMW M is the first manufacturer worldwide to offer
a seven-speed sequential gearbox with drivelogic function. Even more
highly perfected than the previous six-speed transmission, the
seven-speed SMG gearbox enables manual gear selection with ultra-short
shifting times as well as comfortable cruising thanks to automated gear
selection. The purpose of the additional seventh gear is to reduce
engine speed and torque gaps. New SMG gearbox's speed up by 20
percent. With the seven-speed SMG gearbox, gears can be changed using
the gearshift lever on the centre console or the paddles on the
steering wheel. Compared to the previous SMG transmission, changing
gears is 20 percent faster with the new SMG generation. Never before
has it been quicker to change gears with a transmission of this kind.
The advantage for the M5 driver: Gear change is smooth and accomplished
at a speed impossible to reach even by the most proficient driver, thus
making the inevitable power flow interruptions when changing gears
hardly noticeable. The M5 delivers an almost jerk-free performance when
accelerating from a standstill to its top speed. Drivelogic: the
driver determines the SMG's characteristics for changing gears. Thanks
to the SMG's drivelogic function, the driver can choose from eleven gear
change options, which enable him to adapt the SMG's characteristics to
his very own style of motoring. Six of these programs can be
pre-selected in the sequential manual gearbox mode (S mode), the
spectrum ranging from balanced dynamic to very sporty. With the gearbox
in the S mode, the driver always shifts gears manually. Whenever the
driver activates the Launch Control function, the SMG Drivelogic shifts
gears shortly before the maximum engine speed is reached at precisely
the right moment and with optimum slip until the M5 reaches its top
speed. In the Drive (D mode) automatic gearshift mode, the transmission
shifts the seven gears automatically, depending on the program
selected, the driving situation, the road speed and the position of the
accelerator pedal. SMG for increased safety and comfort. The
seven-speed SMG gearbox not only supports the driver in achieving motor
sports performance, but also offers scores of safety features. In
critical situations, when the driver shifts down on a slippery surface,
for example, the gearbox opens the clutch in the fraction of a second
in order to prevent the M5 from swerving out of control in the event of
excessive drag torque at the driven wheels. Further functions are the
climbing, which prevents the car from rolling backwards during hill
starts as well as the hill detection, which adjusts the shift points on
gradients and descents. This prevents gear hunting when going uphill.
When driving downhill, the hill detection holds the lower gears for
longer in order to make effective use of the engine's braking power.
Maximum driving pleasure. The interaction of the V10 engine and the
seven-speed SMG gearbox results in a level of performance, which has so
far been inconceivable for series-production saloons. Above all, there
is one thing the M5 gives to its driver: driving pleasure at its best.
Compared to the previous M5, the current model comes up trumps in all
performance and fun disciplines: it accomplishes the 0 to 100Km/h
sprint in 4,7 seconds and reaches the 200 km/h mark after a mere 15
seconds to go on to the electronically limited top speed
of 250 km/h. A glance at the speedometer reveals where this power
package would head for if maximum speed was not electronically limited:
an awe-inspiring 330 km/h. M suspension based on the 5 Series: the
icing on the cake. The aforementioned lap time demonstrates that the M5
can be extremely sporty. Although the suspension of the basic 5 Series
model is undoubtedly very good, such a record performance with respect
to dynamics would not be possible. This is why the M5 is also totally
unique with regard to its suspension. Many detail solutions and
changes turn the 5 Series into an M5. Consequently, the suspension and
its electronic assistants have been either exclusively developed for
the new M5, undergone extensive modifications or adapted to the special
M performance. For example, the M5's running gear is by no means a
lowered 5 Series suspension. Instead, it is an optimised design created
from scratch. The suspension assisting systems, some of which have the
same name as those of the 5 Series, have been optimised for this
vehicle. On the one hand, this suspension contributes greatly to the M5
being the technological culmination of the successful BMW 5 Series. On
the other hand, it clearly demonstrates that the M5 is a unique model
with a distinctive appearance. Variable M differential lock. The M5
has a variable, torque-sensing differential lock bestowing the vehicle
with a high level of driving stability and optimum traction, above all
when accelerating out of bends. Even in extremely demanding driving
situations, i.e. when there are major differences in the coefficients
of friction at the driven wheels, it offers a decisive advantage in
terms of traction. A further advantage is that it instantly builds up
an increasing locking power if the speed difference between the driven
wheels rises, thus guaranteeing optimum forward progress at all times.
Only featured in the M5: DSC with two selectable driving dynamics
programs. A new generation of the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) has
been especially developed for the M5. The DSC system can be deactivated
by pressing a button on the selector lever cover. The driving dynamics
programs are pre-selected in the so-called MDrive and can be called up
using the MDrive button on the steering wheel. Whilst the first DSC
mode by and large corresponds to that of the 5 Series, the second mode
- the M Dynamic Mode - is highly appreciated by sports-minded drivers.
EDC: the spectrum ranges from sportingly firm to comfortable. The M5's
Electronic Damper Control (EDC) enables the driver to choose from three
programs (comfort, normal and sport), thereby adjusting the suspension
characteristics accordingly. The driver can operate the EDC function via
the MDrive button on the steering wheel or the push button next to the
SMG selector lever. Power button activates engine characteristics
"on demand". The driver often does not need the M5's full
performance and maximum agility, for example in city traffic. This is
why the markedly comfortable P400 performance program with an engine
output of 400 bhp is automatically activated whenever the engine is
started. At the push of a button (the so-called Power button on the
selector lever cover), the ten-cylinder powerplant's full power is at
the driver's disposal. The accelerator pedal kinematics adopt
spontaneous characteristics, giving free rein, in the P500 program, to
the sporty driver and eliciting, in the P500 sport program,
uncompromising racing pleasure. High-performance brakes derived from
motor sport. To complement its immense power output, the M5 is equipped
with a generously sized high-performance braking system with
perforated, weight-optimised compound brake discs. The aluminium
twin-piston sliding callipers (analogous to the BMW 7 Series), which
have been optimised for minimum weight and maximum stiffness, help the
M5 to achieve stopping distances similar to those of red-blooded sports
cars: deceleration from 100Km/h to 0 is accomplished in under 36
metres, the braking distance from 200Km/h to a standstill is less than
140 metres. The high-performance business express. A wolf in sheep's
clothing - this description would fit if the basic 5 Series, and
particularly the new M5, looked "tame" when viewed from
outside. In fact, the 5 Series already looks sporty, elegant and
athletic. It is no coincidence that this 5 Series represents BMW's
dynamic business class. The M5 is set apart from the basic model by a
host of striking and hidden details, which further add to its powerful,
sporty and dynamic looks. An athlete in business attire would be an apt
description of the new M5. Exterior with understatement. The
differences in design versus the basic 5 Series are discreet but
consistent, giving the M5 a surprisingly high level of uniqueness in
terms of looks, without questioning the common genes with the BMW model
series. The modified front and rear aprons are instant eye catchers.
Another difference is the modified side sills and the somewhat more
prominent wheel arches. Traditionally, the M differs from the
"normal" BMW in its exclusive exterior mirror design, the
four tailpipes, which have also become an unmistakable feature of all M
vehicles, and the exclusive wheel design. For the first time, the M5
sports very attractive gills which are incorporated into the front side
panel. An even sportier interior. The M5 comes with a leather
interior in three different colours, which makes it look even more
sophisticated than the lavishly equipped basic model or - for an extra
price - with a full leather interior, which looks absolutely stunning.
Further important differences versus the 5 Series are the instrument
cluster, the optional M-specific head-up display, the steering wheel
with MDrive buttons and the redesigned centre console. Business
express for everyday use. All vehicles made by BMW M GmbH are very
convenient for everyday motoring. This particularly applies to the M5:
despite its awe-inspiring performance which is reminiscent of that of a
racing car, it has remained an elegant and comfortable saloon perfectly
suitable for longer journeys, an integral characteristic of BMW 5
Series cars. Thus, one can say that the M5's racing ambitions neither
impair driving comfort, active and passive safety, nor do they reduce
the space available for passengers and luggage. Even in terms of
consumption and environmental compatibility, the M5 is a real paragon -
just like all BMW automobiles.

Press Contact: Guy Kilfoil
Tel: +27-12-522-2518
E-mail: guy.kilfoil@bmw.co.za

Press Release,M5,Product,BMW M
