Pretoria. BMW Group South Africa is celebrating 20
years of the BMW IT Hub, a milestone that recognises two decades of
investing in South African people, skills and digital capability.
Established in 2006 as a specialised support unit, the hub is one of
four business entities in South Africa and has transformed into a
cornerstone of the BMW Group’s global digital ecosystem. Today, it
stands as the largest BMW IT Hub outside of Germany, powered by more
than 2,500 technology professionals managing everything from
production line data to customer-facing platforms across more than 130
BMW locations worldwide.

A major player in the South African economy

This growth has fundamentally changed the IT Hub’s role within the
local economy. Over the past years, it has created more than 2,000 new
jobs through continued expansion, and in 2026, the hub is projected to
contribute more than R4 billion to South Africa’s economy. As South
Africa positions itself as a source of globally relevant technology
talent, the BMW IT Hub continues to play a strategic role. It
demonstrates what is possible when business, education and long‑term
commitment to people come together.

Reflecting on this journey, Peter van Binsbergen, CEO of BMW Group
South Africa, noted: “This 20-year milestone is a testament to the
world-class talent we have right here in South Africa. The hub has
evolved from a support centre into a global innovation powerhouse, and
as we lean further into AI and data-driven mobility, our Pretoria team
will be at the very heart of BMW Group’s digital future.”

Adding to this sentiment, Thorsten Achenbach, Director of the BMW IT
Hub remarked: "This milestone reflects our commitment to
transforming local potential into global innovation, ensuring South
Africa remains a key architect of the BMW Group’s digital journey."

More than just code: A focus on talent

Beyond the balance sheets, the IT Hub has dedicated the last two
decades to closing the digital skills gap. Coinciding with Youth
Month, the facility is emphasising its outreach programmes and
university partnerships, which have reached more than 40,000
individuals through mentorship and career exposure. The hub continues
to invest in these initiatives to broaden digital access and connect
young South Africans, including 134 Graduate Tech Academy (GTA)
participants in 2026, with high-growth career pathways in media and technology.

The BMW IT Hub South Africa celebrates its 20th anniversary with
strengthened partnerships across leading academic institutions,
including the University of Pretoria and the University of
Stellenbosch. Last year, on 15 and 16 October 2025, the inaugural
University of Stellenbosch Colloquium showcased research and services
developed by students participating in joint projects with the BMW IT
Hub. In 2026, coinciding with this milestone anniversary, the
Colloquium, in collaboration with the BMW IT Hub, is hosting a
week-long innovation programme for students from different South
African universities. This initiative aims to empower top students
with hands-on skills and exposure to cutting-edge technologies,
further cementing BMW Group’s commitment to fostering academic
excellence and industry innovation.

Celebrating the milestone

To celebrate these achievements, BMW Group South Africa hosted an
anniversary event at the IT Hub in Menlyn, Pretoria, bringing together
government officials, industry and media partners, and academia. The
proceedings were honoured by the presence of Gauteng Premier Panyaza
Lesufi, underscoring the strong partnership between BMW Group South
Africa and the provincial government in advancing digital skills and
innovation. Some students from the Graduate Tech Academy were also in
attendance, including members of the cohort of 134 students onboarded
in January 2026, showcasing the future of the hub. The day included
live showcases of South African-developed AI innovations, guided tours
of the hub’s state-of-the-art facilities and a fireside discussion
focused on the next generation of tech talent. The event served as
both a reflection on 20 years of success and a commitment to continued
investment in the region.

Twenty years after opening its doors in Pretoria, the BMW IT Hub
South Africa continues to play an important role in the BMW Group’s
global digital ecosystem. As the BMW Group accelerates its digital
transformation, the BMW IT Hub remains firmly focused on the future.
It continues to nurture talent, embrace new technologies and
contribute to the Group’s global success.

Pretoria. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn has reached a
significant production milestone with the completion of its
100,000th fourth-generation BMW X3, marking an
important moment for the South African manufacturing facility and the
people behind its success.

The milestone reflects the collective effort of associates across the
plant and the broader ecosystem of suppliers, logistics partners and
dealerships that support vehicle production. Together, these teams
contribute to delivering vehicles that meet BMW Group’s global
standards for quality and performance.

The 100,000th vehicle produced is a Fire Red BMW X3 plug-in
hybrid destined for Australia. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn is
the only production facility globally manufacturing the BMW X3 plug-in
hybrid for international markets, underscoring the plant’s strategic
role within BMW Group’s global production network. Located north of
Pretoria, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn continues to play an important role
in South Africa’s automotive industry. Since the plant’s inception,
more than 1.8 million vehicles have been produced at the facility,
including the previous third-generation BMW X3.

Behind every vehicle produced at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn is a team of
people. Production associates, technicians, engineers and support
teams work together across multiple production stages to ensure each
vehicle meets the high standards expected by customers.

“Producing 100,000 fourth-generation BMW X3 vehicles is a significant
milestone for BMW Group Plant Rosslyn and a testament to the
dedication and professionalism of our associates,” said Danny Bester,
Director of BMW Group Plant Rosslyn. “Every vehicle that leaves this
plant represents the skill, commitment and pride of the people who
build it. It also reflects the trust that customers place in the BMW
brand and in the quality delivered here in South Africa.”

The milestone also highlights the plant’s contribution to skills
development and talent cultivation. Apprentices, trainees and graduate
engineers gain hands-on experience in a real manufacturing
environment, helping to develop the next generation of technical and
engineering professionals in South Africa.

Each vehicle produced at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn moves through
multiple production stations where associates focus on precision,
teamwork and continuous improvement. For many employees, the milestone
represents years of dedication and a shared commitment on the
production floor.

While reaching this 100,000-vehicle milestone marks an important
moment, work at the plant continues every day as teams remain focused
on building vehicles with the same attention to quality, precision and
care that defines the BMW brand.

Midrand. BMW Group South Africa today outlined its
2025 performance and strategic direction for the year ahead during its
Start-of-Year Media Update, highlighting record premium segment
leadership, strong local production and continued recognition across
product excellence, people practices and corporate responsibility.

In 2025, the BMW brand achieved its highest-ever premium segment
share locally, exceeding 46,15%, despite ongoing affordability
pressures and intensifying competition in the South African automotive
market (based on Naamsa data). This performance reflects the continued
strength of BMW Group South Africa’s product portfolio, long-term
customer value proposition and disciplined execution across the business.

Momentum was strong across all brands. MINI closed the year with a
premium segment share of 5.67%. Combined, BMW and MINI captured 51.82%
of the premium segment. Despite a challenging market, BMW Motorrad
delivered a robust performance, maintaining a segment share above
39.3% (combined segment of >251cc).

Award-winning products, design leadership and portfolio strength

BMW Group South Africa’s strong commercial performance was reinforced
by significant recognition across South Africa’s leading automotive
awards programmes during 2025.

The locally produced BMW X3 was crowned South African Car of the
Year, while also securing the Premium category award under the same
programme. Further category wins included the BMW 5 Series Sedan in
the Executive category, and the BMW M5, which claimed the Performance
category, the Jurors’ Choice Award, and a third-place overall finish.

Additional recognition followed through the CAR Magazine Top 12 Best
Buys Awards 2025, where the BMW 7 Series was named Luxury Car of the
Year, and the BMW X3 secured the Premium Midsize SAV category. At the
Cars.co.za Consumer Awards 2025, BMW Group South Africa’s portfolio
was again strongly represented, with wins including MINI Countryman S
ALL4 in the Premium Crossover category and BMW X3 30e xDrive M Sport
in the Executive SUV category, among others.

Alongside awards recognition, 2025 also saw BMW Group South Africa
place a deliberate spotlight on design, heritage and emotional brand
connection through the introduction of BMW Homage Editions. These
limited-edition models celebrated BMW’s design legacy while offering
customers distinctive, locally relevant expressions of the brand’s identity.

This design focus was further reinforced through the BMW X3 20 Pure
Design, which showcased a refined, pared-back aesthetic aligned with
BMW’s global design language while resonating strongly with local
customer preferences.

Local manufacturing anchoring global relevance

A cornerstone of BMW Group South Africa’s presence in South Africa
remains BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, which produced more than 79,000
vehicles in 2025, supported by a full three-shift production schedule.
This output reflects sustained global demand and the plant’s ability
to maintain operational excellence amid supply-chain volatility and
market uncertainty.

Danny Bester, Director of BMW Group Plant Rosslyn,
said: “The plant’s 2025 performance reflects both operational
discipline and long-term investment. Operating at this scale, while
maintaining quality and efficiency, speaks to the capability,
resilience and commitment of our Rosslyn team. Our focus remains on
building a future-ready plant that can continue to serve global
markets with confidence, underpinned by skills development and
sustained investment in South Africa.”

The plant’s strategic role has been further strengthened by the
production of the fourth-generation BMW X3, which entered production
in late 2024. BMW Plant Rosslyn produces BMW X3 ICE and PHEV models
interchangeably on a single flexible production line. This allows
efficient switching between variants to meet global market demand for
both conventional and electrified vehicles.

Recognition for people, transformation and societal contribution

Alongside its commercial and operational performance, BMW Group South
Africa received continued recognition in 2025 for its people practices
and organisational culture. The company was re-certified as a Top
Employer, reflecting progress in digital enablement, employee
development, workplace flexibility and the effective translation of
employee feedback into meaningful action.

Additional recognition through platforms such as SAGEA and GradStar
further reinforced BMW Group South Africa’s standing as an employer of
choice, particularly in relation to youth development, graduate
employability and early-career talent support.

In parallel, BMW Group South Africa and BMW Group Financial Services
achieved Level 1 B-BBEE status in 2025, underscoring the Group’s
ongoing commitment to transformation, accessibility and meaningful
economic participation.

Premium leadership in a market in transition

South Africa’s automotive landscape continues to evolve rapidly, with
increased competition from new entrants and growing consumer focus on
affordability. Against this backdrop, BMW Group South Africa’s
sustained leadership reflects the value of long-term investment,
established manufacturing capability, strong dealer and service
networks, and a proven ownership proposition.

Beyond the point of sales, the Group continues to differentiate
itself through strong resale values, comprehensive aftersales support
and a customer-centric ownership experience designed to deliver value
and peace of mind throughout the vehicle lifecycle, under the motto
‘Relax. We care”.

Peter van Binsbergen, CEO of BMW Group South Africa,
said: “Our 2025 performance reflects consistency across the business,
from record segment leadership and strong production at Plant Rosslyn
to award-winning products, distinctive design initiatives and
recognised people practices. Together, these elements position BMW
Group South Africa to compete effectively while continuing to invest
in South Africa’s future.”

Continued momentum into 2026 and beyond

Looking ahead, BMW Group South Africa reaffirmed its focus on
disciplined growth, continued innovation and sustained investment in
local operations, aligned with the BMW Group’s broader strategy.

A key milestone outlined during the engagement is the planned
introduction of the BMW iX3 to the South African market, marking a new
chapter in BMW’s design, digitalisation and electrification journey.
The rollout will further strengthen BMW Group South Africa’s premium
positioning while offering customers access to the next generation of
BMW technology and design.

With a resilient manufacturing base, a highly recognised product
portfolio, strong people foundations and a clear innovation roadmap,
BMW Group South Africa is well positioned to navigate an increasingly
complex market while continuing to contribute meaningfully to South
Africa’s automotive sector and broader economy.

Relations Director and Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG,
responsible for People and Real Estate, as part of their broader
engagements in South Africa, highlighted the strong and active
partnership between the BMW Group and the South African government in
advancing industrial growth and economic empowerment.

“The achievements at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, especially its path
towards record production volumes and its crucial role in our global
BMW X3 production, are a source of great pride”, comments Milan
Nedeljković. “Our significant investment in electrification here
demonstrates our long-term belief in South Africa as a key
manufacturing hub within our global network, driving innovation,
skills and sustainable growth for the region.”

Showcasing local excellence and commitment.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to spotlight BMW Group
South Africa’s recent successes and plans. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn is
set to achieve its highest annual production volume in 52 years,
reflecting strong global demand and the BMW Group’s confidence in
local manufacturing capabilities. This performance is underpinned by
continuous investment, notably the R4.2 billion allocated for the
electrification of BMW Group Plant Rosslyn. The locally produced BMW
X3 recently earned critical acclaim, winning the Old Mutual Insure
2025 South African Car of the Year and the Premium category awards,
highlighting its strength and market appeal. BMW Group South Africa’s
strong Q2 performance indicates its leadership in the premium segment,
with customer demand and its electrification strategy continuing to
drive production of the new BMW X3 at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn. To
date, Plant Rosslyn is the only plant that produces the BMW X3 plug-in
hybrid (PHEV) for the entire world; a fact that the team of BMW Group
Plant Rosslyn takes pride in.

Advancing South Africa’s automotive sector, together.

The engagement at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn served as a pivotal
platform to reinforce the company’s position as a trusted corporate
citizen and contributor to national progress. During the visit,
President Ramaphosa interacted with the plant assembly staff on the
production line, gaining firsthand insight into daily operations, and
later addressed several hundred production staff, acknowledging their
dedication. Discussions during the visit highlighted BMW Group South
Africa’s industry leadership, showcasing its role as a premium
automotive manufacturer through innovative and sustainable practices,
and emphasising its substantial investment in South Africa’s economic development.

The dialogue focused on the tangible benefits of BMW Group Plant
Rosslyn, specifically its role in advancing job creation, driving
essential skills development, and facilitating technology transfer
within the local market. A reflection of its ongoing dedication to
national transformation, BMW Group South Africa and BMW Group
Financial Services South Africa both achieved Level 1 B-BBEE status in
the 2024 audit, highlighting the companies’ drive towards an inclusive
and equitable workplace, and reflecting continuous, focused efforts
and collaboration. Crucially, the visit has strengthened public and
private sector relations, deepening BMW Group South Africa’s
partnership with the local government and aligning its strategic goals
with the President’s vision for industrial growth, economic
empowerment and sustainable mobility.

“This engagement at Plant Rosslyn reaffirms the great partnership
between the BMW Group and South Africa”, states Daniel Bester,
Director of BMW Group Plant Rosslyn. “Our plant continues to be a
beacon of manufacturing excellence, setting new production records and
driving innovation. We remain committed to contributing to South
Africa’s economic growth, actively working towards a shared,
prosperous future.”

Beyond manufacturing, BMW Group South Africa’s partnership with the
Youth Employment Services (YES) programme continues to create
meaningful work opportunities for young South Africans, equipping them
with practical experience. The company has generated over 3,500 youth
work experiences since 2022. The 2025 cohort at BMW South Africa
includes 86 talented individuals gaining invaluable experience across
the four business entities.

Creating confidence for a shared future.

The successful gathering at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn solidifies BMW
Group South Africa’s industrial leadership and its function as an
integral collaborator in South Africa’s economic growth and enduring
prosperity. A key pillar supporting this confidence is the company’s
highly adaptive and capable manufacturing workforce. The advanced
requirements for producing the new BMW X3 at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn
have driven significant advancements in employee technical skills and
expertise. This continuous development of local capabilities not only
upholds manufacturing excellence but also reinforces South Africa’s
strategic importance within the global automotive industry.

Press Contact: Angela Konert
Tel: +49-89-382-50591
E-mail: angela.konert@bmw.co.za

Press Release,Drive Technologies,BMW,Human Resources,Research & Development,Production Plants,Locations,Sustainability

Midrand. BMW Group South Africa announces the
appointment of Daniel Bester as the new Director of BMW Group Plant
Rosslyn, effective 1 March 2025. Bester succeeds Dr Niklas
Fichtmüller, who will return to Munich/Germany to take up a leadership
position related to a future car project.

Bester brings nearly three decades of experience with the BMW Group
to this role. Beginning his career as a graduate trainee in 1996, he
has held senior leadership positions at various plants within the
global production network, including Plant Rosslyn, Plant Oxford in
the United Kingdom, and Plant Lydia in China.

Bringing a world of experience home for continued success.

As a South African native, Bester returns home with a wealth of
international expertise and a proven track record in operational
excellence. His experience spans key areas of automotive
manufacturing, including quality, production, and technology steering.
Most recently, before assuming his role as Technical Director, Daniel
served as the Head of Assembly at Plant Lydia in China. In this
capacity, Bester was instrumental in streamlining operations and
enhancing assembly processes for the production of the BMW i3.
Furthermore, he played a pivotal role in the successful launches of
key models, including BMW X3 long-wheelbase at Plant Lydia and the
third-generation BMW X3 at Plant Rosslyn, where the fourth-generation
BMW X3 is now manufactured for global export.

“I am honoured and excited to return to Plant Rosslyn, a place that
holds special significance in my career,” said Bester. “I am committed
to continuing the legacy of excellence and driving further success by
supporting a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous
improvement. I look forward to working with the talented team at
Rosslyn to achieve new heights.”

Peter van Binsbergen, CEO of BMW Group South Africa commented,
“Danny’s journey with the BMW Group, from graduate trainee to Plant
Director, exemplifies the talent and dedication we cultivate within
our organisation. His global perspective and deep understanding of our
operations, coupled with his forward-thinking approach, make him the
ideal leader to build on the strong foundation of Plant Rosslyn. We
are delighted to welcome him back to South Africa.”

BMW Group Plant Rosslyn’s success story continues.

The organisation also expressed its appreciation to Dr Fichtmüller
for his contributions to BMW Group Plant Rosslyn. During his tenure,
the plant achieved the successful launch and start of production of
the new BMW X3, a remarkable accomplishment for the BMW Group and
South Africa. Dr Fichtmüller’s leadership has been instrumental in
fostering innovation and securing increased production volumes for the plant.

Rosslyn, Pretoria. BMW Group South Africa hosted
media this week at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn for the national media
launch of the new BMW X3. The event, which will have a second media
rotation from 19–20 February, provided a firsthand look at the
state-of-the-art facility, the production process, and the plant’s
significant local footprint.

Since its start of production in October 2024, the new BMW X3 has
strongly resonated with South African customers, with all available
stock sold or on order. Impressively, approximately 10% of sales are
for the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) BMW X3 30e xDrive
model, underscoring growing interest in electrified vehicles and
reinforcing BMW’s leadership in the ‘New Energy Vehicles’ segment. The
BMW X3 30e xDrive has driven a remarkable 45% increase in the monthly
retail rate of PHEVs, demonstrating its significant market impact.

These achievements coincide with BMW Group Plant Rosslyn’s
reintroduction of a third production shift and expansion of its
production line to include internal combustion engine (ICE) variants.
“The new BMW X3 embodies our commitment to both innovation and
customer choice,” said Ernst Kohlmeyer, General Manager of Quality at
BMW Group South Africa. “Producing both PHEV and ICE models on the
same line demonstrates the flexibility and adaptability of Plant
Rosslyn, enabling us to effectively respond to global market demands.”

Driven by worldwide demand, the new BMW X3 plays a crucial role in
the BMW Group’s strategic electrification roadmap. Its production
launch is timely, showcasing BMW Group Plant Rosslyn’s capabilities
and commitment to delivering on allocated volume and quality in a
three-shift operation, reintroduced on 8 January 2025, to meet growing
demand. The plant is projected to produce an average of 110 units per shift.

“These production milestones represent the culmination of years of
planning and investment in Plant Rosslyn,” added Anuk Maharaj, Project
Lead for the new BMW X3 at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn. “We are immensely
proud to see the new BMW X3 come to life here, securing jobs and
contributing to the South African economy.”

In addition to the previously launched BMW X3 30e xDrive, BMW Group
Plant Rosslyn will now also produce the BMW X3 20 petrol and 20d
diesel variants, (started in January 2025), followed by the BMW X3 40d
xDrive in May 2025. Significantly, both the BMW X3 30e xDrive and the
BMW X3 40d xDrive will be exclusively produced at BMW Group Plant
Rosslyn for global markets. This strategic move reinforces the BMW
Group’s ‘technology openness’ philosophy, offering customers
powertrain options that best suit their individual needs.

This expansion follows a R4.2 billion investment in the
electrification and digitisation of the production facility,
demonstrating the BMW Group’s commitment to transformation, skills
development, and future-proofing the Rosslyn plant within its global
production network. A comprehensive plant-wide training programme
ensured the workforce was fully prepared for the new model’s production.

The production of the BMW X3, including PHEV and ICE variants,
secures jobs not only at BMW Group South Africa but also within its
supply chain and retail network across the country. This new
development reaffirms the BMW Group’s confidence in BMW Group Plant
Rosslyn and its employees, positioning the plant for continued success
in the evolving automotive landscape.

Press Contact: Angela Konert
Tel: +49-89-382-50591
E-mail: angela.konert@bmw.co.za

Press Release,X3,Production Plants,Locations,Environment,Sustainability,G45,Product,BMW

ever, the new BMW X3 assumes the mantle of talented all-rounder for
everyday use, leisure activities and trips away in the brand’s core
segment. A new design language gives the fourth generation of the
Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) for the premium midsize segment much
enhanced exterior presence and an aura of dynamic grace. High-quality
materials, a far more generous standard specification, advanced
digitalisation and the new BMW iDrive with QuickSelect based on BMW
Operating System 9 set the tone for the premium ambience inside the
progressively designed cabin. Driving pleasure, safety and
long-distance comfort in the new BMW X3 also all benefit from the
exceptionally precise tuning of the overall vehicle setup and a wide
selection of semi-automated driving and parking systems.

The new BMW X3 heralds major improvements in efficiency and dynamic
performance with its wide-ranging model line-up. The portfolio of
powertrains comprises not just highly efficient petrol and diesel
engines, but also a latest-generation plug-in hybrid system that
enables the new BMW X3 30e xDrive to achieve an electric range of 81 –
90 kilometres in the WLTP cycle. With a hike in drive power to 293 kW
and dynamic performance capabilities to eclipse its rivals, the new
BMW X3 M50 xDrive M Performance model offers a compelling proposition.

The new edition’s aura of modernity and enhanced product substance
provide the ideal basis for adding another chapter to the BMW X3
success story – one that first began 20 years ago. Since first
establishing the SAV segment in the premium midsize class, it has been
instrumental in the steady growth in popularity of the BMW X models
and, indeed, became the brand’s best-selling model in 2023. The new
BMW X3 will be built at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg (USA) and Plant
Rosslyn (South Africa) using a production process focussed on
conserving resources and circularity.

Rosslyn. BMW Group South Africa marks the dawn of a
new era with the start of production of the next-generation BMW X3.
Plant Rosslyn began manufacturing the new model for global export on 1
October 2024, and is the only facility in its global production
network to build the BMW X3 as a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV).

On 28 August 2024, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn ended the production of
the third-generation BMW X3, totalling the number of BMW X3 cars built
to 403,114 units. That milestone marked a graceful conclusion in the
organisation’s production history and signified the continuation of
the BMW X3 success story in South Africa. Following worldwide demand,
the fourth-generation BMW X3 plays a significant role in the BMW
Group’s strategic electrification roadmap. Its production comes at a
critical time to showcase the South African plant’s capabilities and
commitment to delivering on the allocated volume and quality in a
three-shift operation.

A world-class product for the future.

Gearing up BMW Group Plant Rosslyn to manufacture the electrified BMW
X3 is a significant step to future-proof the facility in the global
BMW Group production network. The plant’s modular production
technique, which allows multiple models and drivetrains to be built in
a single production line, means that it will be able to manufacture
electrified as well as internal combustion engine vehicles on a single line.

The production of the BMW X3 PHEV in Rosslyn is not only securing
jobs at BMW Group South Africa but also within its supply chain and
retail network across the country. Thus, the new BMW X3 is creating an
opportunity for over 50, 000 people in South Africa. With the BMW
Group’s R4.2 billion investment in the electrification and
digitisation of the production facility, BMW Group South Africa is
committed to transformation and skills development. BMW Group Plant
Rosslyn implemented a plant-wide training programme to produce the new model.

BMW Group South Africa Plant Director Dr Niklas Fichtmüller
commented: “We have finally arrived at the start of production of the
next-generation BMW X3. We have eagerly awaited and prepared for this,
and I am thrilled that we can begin this next chapter of the
successful BMW X3 story here in South Africa. Our teams have worked
tirelessly and diligently to meet every milestone to this point. This
moment encapsulates their commitment to providing a world-class
product from South Africa for world.”

An electrifying era.

The BMW Group follows a technology-open approach and will be
systematically pursuing its strategic goals by electrifying its lineup
to offer different drive variants flexibly in line with customer
demand. Its five-year-long investment into Plant Rosslyn demonstrates
its commitment to accelerating the transition to sustainable electric
mobility globally. Evidenced by its lead position in electromobility,
the BMW Group has already delivered more than two million electrified
vehicles to customers globally, including more than one million
battery electric vehicles. In South Africa, the
market offering has been expanded to include full-electric and plug-in
hybrid options across all segments.

Rosslyn. BMW Group South Africa hails the end of an
era as BMW Group Plant Rosslyn ended production of the
third-generation BMW X3. On 28 August, the last vehicle of this model
was produced, totalling the number of BMW X3 cars built to 403,114
units. This historic moment was celebrated by the organisation’s
members of management and employees. The last vehicle – a now
memorable Carbon Black BMW X3 – will be shipped to a customer in Germany.

At the heart of BMW Group South Africa’s operations since 1973, BMW
Group Plant Rosslyn is a cornerstone of its global production network
of more than 30 sites in 15 countries. It was the first plant
established outside of Germany, building more than 1.7 million cars
since its inception. In a key move, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn produced
the BMW 3 Series for 35 years until 2018, manufacturing more than 1
million units, and increasing production with each model.

The culmination of 6 years of hard work.

In 2015, the BMW Group announced a R6 billion investment into South
Africa by preparing BMW Group Plant Rosslyn for the production of the
BMW X3 in 2018. The investment upgraded the facility into one of the
most modern in the world, and placed it in line with the efficiency,
sustainability and flexibility of BMW Group plants across globally.

BMW Group Plant Rosslyn has been producing the BMW X3 in a
three-shift operation for South Africa and more than 50 African and
global markets. Approximately 96% of the units produced at the plant
are destined for export. With a planned maximum capacity of 76,000
units of the BMW X3, and additional investments, the plant can
flexibly match volumes to demand and build more cars.

Since the start of local BMW X3 production in 2018, BMW Group South
Africa has claimed segment leadership as the top-selling premium car
brand in South Africa. There is steady growth in the popularity of the
BMW X models, and the BMW X3 has become one the brand’s best-selling
models. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn has proven itself to be an essential
member of the BMW Group production network, consistently improving
quality and productivity, and fashioning success.

General Manager of Assembly at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, Tshepo Khoza
commented, “Having worked closely with the third-generation BMW X3,
the last of its kind rolling off the production line was a
particularly sentimental moment. While the BMW X3 has undergone
several generational updates, each model has unique strengths, with
the spirited driving dynamics of the BMW brand remaining consistent.
The third generation stood out with a new range of more powerful and
efficient engines. The new BMW X3 is yet another show of modernity and
enhanced product substance.”

As one chapter ends, another begins.

In 2023, BMW Group South Africa announced R4.2 billion in investment
to equip its Rosslyn plant to build the next-generation BMW X3 plug-in
hybrid vehicle (PHEV). The investment is in line with BMW’s iFACTORY
master plan for future production, marking a significant next-step in
advancing the development of efficient, digitalised and
resource-friendly production.

The new BMW X3 will be built at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg and Plant
Rosslyn using a production process that prioritises the conservation
of resources and circularity. Production will begin with the PHEV
model, exclusively manufactured in Rosslyn for the world.

As of October 2024, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn will build the
fourth-generation BMW X3, continuing the success story of the
production of this model in South Africa, and securing the future of
the plant for the next 50 years. This decision further ensures the
livelihoods of more than 20,000 people directly and indirectly
employed at BMW Group South Africa’s facilities and within its supply
chain. More recently, plant employees have been trained for new tasks
in a qualification programme for electromobility.

Dr Niklas Fichtmueller, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn Director remarked,
“The continuation of the BMW X3 story in South Africa demonstrates the
BMW Group’s commitment to South Africa – its people and communities –
after 50 years of operation. It follows on the sales success of a
model that has been a clear segment leader. Our achievements are
attributed to our workforce who have been dedicated to and persistent
in building a world-class product as well as servicing customers globally.”

Rosslyn/ Midrand. The highly anticipated
fourth-generation BMW X3 manufactured in South Africa affirms the BMW
Group’s commitment to electrification. Delivered also with a plug-in
hybrid powertrain, the global best-seller embarks on a new era. The
BMW X3 30e xDrive will be produced at the iconic BMW Group Plant
Rosslyn for worldwide export. Last year, BMW Group South Africa
announced the BMW Group’s R4.2 billion investment in the
electrification and digitalisation of the plant. The infrastructural
upgrade represents the largest in the plant’s history. It secures BMW
Group Plant Rosslyn’s future as well as the livelihoods of over 20,000
direct and indirect employees, reflecting the organisation’s long-term
commitment to the upliftment of South Africa and its people.

A thrilling drive to the future of electromobility.

The fourth generation of the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) in the
premium mid-range vehicle segment will be produced at the BMW Group
Plants Spartanburg (USA), Shenyang (China) and Rosslyn. BMW Group
Plant Rosslyn is the only market set to manufacture the plug-in hybrid
electric vehicle (PHEV) version for export to an expanding group of
electric vehicle customers worldwide.

The success of BMW is founded on its long-term thinking and
responsible action. Evidenced in its lead position in electromobility,
the BMW Group has already delivered globally more than two million
electrified vehicles to customers, including more than one million
battery electric vehicles (BEVs). In 2023, the BMW brand remained the
South African BEV market leader for the year with 57.2% of the BEV
premium segment. And in 2024, the BMW Group will have a BEV option in
almost all its main segments.

Plant Director at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, Dr Niklas Fichtmueller
commented, “We were excited to announce the production of the
next-generation BMW X3, and we remain thrilled by the expected debut
and start of production later on this year. This vehicle ensures that
BMW Group South Africa is positioned to be a major player in the South
African premium car market and underscores the BMW Group’s role as a
key player in the local automotive industry’s move towards a green economy.”

“I must also commend the efforts of all employees who have had a hand
in an already iconic production for the future,” Dr Fichtmueller
proudly ended.

Made in South Africa for the world for the future.

BMW Group Plant Rosslyn’s rich 50-year history makes it a vital
component of the BMW Group’s global production network. It has an
indelible mark in local automotive production, manufacturing over 1.6
million vehicles which have been exported globally. BMW Group South
Africa continues to play a critical role in the BMW Group’s global
operations and its commitment to the long-term development of South Africa.

BMW Group South Africa is an integral part of the growing global
success story of BMW X models. The new BMW X3 is another icon produced
in South Africa for the world. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn’s iconic
production portfolio of the past five decades includes the BMW 1800 SA
and 2000 SA, and the BMW 5 Series and BMW 7 Series vehicles. BMW 3
Series was manufactured at Plant Rosslyn from 1983 until 2018 before
transitioning to the production of the best-selling BMW X3.

BMW Group South Africa CEO, Peter van Binsbergen said, “With just
over 50 years of history, BMW Group South Africa has become an
intrinsic part of the social fibre of South Africa, and a pioneer of
corporate sustainability within the BMW Group. We are a leading
example of creating shared value through innovative sustainability
practices – our products and production, and corporate social
investment – our people and the communities in which we operate.”

“We are excited for the production of the fourth-generation BMW X3,
as it signals another era of passion and innovation. And we will
continue to honour our commitment to both people and planet with an
increased range of electrified – fully electric and plug-in hybrid –
vehicles,” van Binsbergen continued.

Leipzig. The start of MINI Countryman production
marks a number of firsts and milestones for BMW Group Plant Leipzig:
for the first time, a MINI model is being made in Germany – on the
same production line as the BMW 1 Series and 2 Series. It’s all made
possible by the plant’s flexible structures and development. Over the
last five years the BMW Group has invested €700 million to ready
Leipzig for increased vehicle volumes and adapt it for MINI-specific
requirements. By the end of 2024 the workforce in production will
increase by over 900. In addition, the new MINI Countryman is a
catalyst for innovations in sustainable production.

“By launching production of the MINI Countryman here in Leipzig, we
are introducing multibrand operations to our flexible production
system,” explained Milan Nedeljković, Board Member for Production.
“Plant Leipzig also offers a number of highlights in terms of resource
conservation in production, providing further evidence of the
successful rollout of our long-term masterplan: the BMW iFACTORY.”

Seamless integration through flexible structures

When it comes to production of the new MINI Countryman, the BMW Group
is building on the skills and extreme flexibility of Plant Leipzig to
forge new pathways in manufacturing. Seamlessly integrated into the
production process, the MINI Countryman now rolls off the same
assembly line as the BMW 1 Series, BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé and BMW 2
Series Active Tourer.

Thanks to its flexible assembly structures, Plant Leipzig is in a
position to produce two brands with three different drives –
combustion, plug-in-hybrid and fully electric – all on the same
production line. The third-generation MINI Countryman will be
available with a petrol, diesel or fully electric powertrain, with the
high-voltage batteries for the MINI Countryman Electric also being
made in Leipzig. It will reach dealerships on 17 February 2024.

Investments and recruitment to increase production volume

The BMW Group has invested some €500 million in Leipzig to increase
production volume for new models. Since 2018 the bodyshop, paintshop,
assembly and logistics have undergone extensive additions and
upgrades, taking production capacity up from 250,000 units previously,
to as much as 350,000 units a year at present.

To adapt the production system to MINI-specific requirements, the BMW
Group invested around €200 million. Initially approx. 100 MINI
Countryman cars a day will roll off the production lines, rising to
500 during the course of next year – in addition to the almost 1,000
BMW cars already coming out of the factory every day. This will not
only secure existing jobs, but also create up to 900 new ones in
vehicle production alone.

Electromobility and MINI production drive development

Another important milestone in the development and extension of Plant
Leipzig is its transition to electromobility. “Leipzig remains
electric,” says Petra Peterhänsel, Plant Director. “With the BMW i3
and i8, we were at the vanguard of e-mobility at the BMW Group, and
from 2024, we will be producing our next fully electric car: the MINI
Countryman Electric. We will manufacture the high-voltage batteries
for it in-house as well.”

Starting next year BMW Group Plant Leipzig will run the entire
production process for the current fifth generation of high-voltage
batteries. This consists of three stages: cell coating, module
production and battery assembly. The five cell coating lines, three
module production lines and the first high-voltage battery assembly
lines are all in the process of going into operation, with a second
high-voltage battery assembly line scheduled for launch in 2024.

Capacity for e-component production has also been increasing since
2021, making Plant Leipzig an important supplier across the BMW
production network. The parts are used in fully electric vehicles such
as the BMW iX1, BMW i4, BMW i5 and BMW iX. E-component production in
Leipzig currently employs over 800 people, and there are plans to
develop it further, with investments totalling more than €800 million.

Sustainable materials and production

The MINI Countryman Electric is a major step in the MINI brand’s
transition to full electrification by 2030 and combines an electrified
go-kart feel with a reduced environmental footprint. In developing the
new model, the MINI brand’s responsible attitude was very much in the
focus with regard to materials and production: chrome no longer
features anywhere in the interior or exterior, and the light-metal
alloy wheels are cast from up to 70 percent secondary aluminium. The
permanently electrically excited synchronous motors are highly
efficient and made entirely without rare earth minerals.

The interior is made purely from innovative, high-quality materials
that are easy on the environment. The dashboard, door facias, floor
covering and foot mats, for example, are made of recycled textiles. A
high-quality alternative to conventional materials such as plastics,
recycled textiles reduce CO2 emissions along the value
chain and require less water to manufacture.

Innovative painting method for contrast roof

One of the striking design features of the MINI exterior is the
contrast roof, which can be ordered in a different colour from the
rest of the body. In the MINI Countryman it will be painted using a
new, resource-friendly method known as overspray-free painting.
Currently being readied for series operation, overspray-free painting
does away with the excess paint – or overspray – generated by
conventional painting methods and makes surfaces with more than one
colour easier to produce, as they no longer require the laborious
process of masking. Overspray-free painting also helps save
CO2 emissions, as exhaust air from the cabin requires less
cleansing. Plus it requires considerably less conditioned air, i.e.
air that is brought to a set temperature and humidity. As a result,
less energy is needed to temper air and treat exhaust.

Another sustainable innovation operating at Plant Leipzig is the
burner technology used to dry the paint on contrast roofs. Last year
Leipzig became the first car plant in the world to pilot the new
technology, which can run on not only natural gas but also hydrogen.
The flexible burners can burn hydrogen (H2), natural gas (methane –
CH4) or a mixture of the two and can even switch between them without
having to halt operations. After successful tests, Plant Leipzig has
now installed five hydrogen-capable bivalent burners for series
operations, which are now being used for the contrast roof of the MINI
Countryman. Plans are in place to convert further burners in the
paintshop to bivalent operations.

Plant Leipzig – Built for sustainability

At Plant Leipzig, the focus has always been very much on efficient
processes and a long-term strategy for energy generation and
consumption, ever since planning began. “Sustainability is in the DNA
of BMW Group Plant Leipzig. There’s one example that everyone can see:
our four wind turbines, which generate electricity for the plant,”
Petra Peterhänsel explained. They were erected in 2013 and deliver 10
MW (generating approx. 25 GWh/year). The second milestone came in
2017, when the battery storage farm went on stream. Equipped with up
to 700 second-life high-voltage batteries from BMW i3 vehicles, it
offers interim electricity storage for energy from the wind turbines
and elsewhere, helping to optimise local energy management and
stabilise the grid.

“Our vision at Plant Leipzig is to decarbonise production as far as
possible by replacing fossil fuels with green hydrogen,” said Petra
Peterhänsel, explaining the long-term focus of the facility. This will
require sufficient green hydrogen from a grid. A regional hydrogen
grid is currently in planning, with Plant Leipzig set to benefit.

Press Contact: Hailey Philander
Tel: +27-71-666-2070
E-mail: hailey.philander@bmw.co.za

Press Release,Production Plants,Locations,Countryman,Sustainability,Leipzig,Product,MINI

Sokolov/Munich. The BMW Group celebrated the launch
of its new test site in Sokolov, Czechia (widely known as the Czech
Republic). With Petr Očko, the Deputy Minister for Industry and Trade
in Czechia, and Petr Kulhánek, the Governor of the Karlovy Vary
region, in attendance, Ilka Hortsmeier, BMW Group’s Board Member for
People and Real Estate, and Frank Weber, BMW Group’s Board Member for
Development, officially opened the Future Mobility Development Center
(FMDC) for fully automated development and test drives.

As the first development location of its kind in central Europe,
the FMDC, in which 300 million euros have been invested, will play a
key role in the company’s future mobility development. The former
mining region has transformed into an innovation hub employing more
than one hundred skilled workers. The surrounding terrain offers the
best real-world conditions for testing of highly and fully automated
driving and parking to supplement the virtual simulation of driving
situations. Through this combination of virtual simulation and
real-world testing, the BMW Group meets the highest safety
requirements of its customers. The FMDC in Sokolov rounds out BMW’s
existing group of test sites in Aschheim near Munich, Miramas in
France, and Arjeplog in Sweden.

“With our new Future Mobility Development Center, we have
created a one-of-a-kind test site, designed exclusively for the highly
demanding testing of automated driving and parking up to level 4. On
600 hectares of land, we test all possible driving conditions with
maximum flexibility and tremendous efficiency: city, countryside,
freeway, as well as automated parking. The special thing: We can run
our test modules one after the other without stopping. This makes our
testing as realistic, reliable, and customer-oriented as possible,”
said Frank Weber, BMW Board Member for Development.

The new test site not only enables the testing and further
development of technological innovations, but also stands as an
example of how the highest environmental protection and sustainability
standards have been consistently integrated in concept and
implemented. Throughout the planning and establishment of the test
track, BMW worked in close cooperation with specialised ecological
construction monitoring.

“Making mobility electric, digital, and sustainable goes beyond
our vehicles at the BMW Group. We look at the entire value chain,
including our own sites. Together with our partners, we were able to
develop a former surface mine site here in Sokolov into a modern and
efficient test site and create new, attractive jobs,” said Ilka
Horstmeier, BMW Board Member for People and Real Estate. “The Future
Mobility Development Center and its charging infrastructure are
supplied with one hundred percent green electricity from renewable
energy sources. This is another step toward the decarbonisation of our
sites globally.”

In addition to the use of green electricity, the site is
equipped with an innovative water management system that
systematically collects rainwater and uses it for track irrigation.
The protection and promotion of the local biodiversity were also
considered throughout the planning process: amphibian control systems
were installed throughout the site to ensure the safe crossing of
animals across the test track. 2.2 million cubic meters of soil
previously excavated by nearby mining were used to build the site.
Thus, no additional land was sealed, but rather an area that had lain
fallow was recycled for forward-looking technological development.

Press Contact: Hailey Philander
Tel: +27-71-666-2070
E-mail: hailey.philander@bmw.co.za

Press Release,Research & Development,Locations

Midrand. Fifty years ago, in March 1973, a key
automotive, economic, and societal player in South Africa was founded:
The newly established plant of BMW South Africa started to produce the
first BMW vehicles, laying the foundation for a South African icon.
Located in Rosslyn, outside the capital city of Pretoria, this was the
first BMW production site outside of Germany. Few would have imagined
the critical role the subsidiary on the tip of Africa would ultimately
play in developing products – and nurturing talent – for the Bavarian manufacturer.

Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of BMW AG for Production and
Chairman of the Board of Management, BMW Group South Africa, said: “As
the first plant outside Germany, the emotional link to South Africa is
very strong. It was our first step to internationalise BMW.

“Plant Rosslyn has over the past 50 years proven itself to be an
essential member of our production network, consistently improving
quality and productivity. The passion for the brand is clear, and the
right teams with the right spirit are in place to direct its growth
for the next 50 years.”

Five decades later, in addition to BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, the BMW
Group South Africa business includes a National Sales Company that
sells and distributes BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad; a Financial Services
company established in 1990; and a software company (or IT Hub)
servicing more than 50 countries.

Over 50 years, however, Plant Rosslyn has remained at the core of the
BMW Group’s South African operation. More than R12,6 billion has been
invested into the production facility by the BMW Group since 1995. To
date, more than 1,6 million cars have been produced at this plant,
which recently attained another significant milestone with the
300,000th BMW X3 rolling off its assembly line.

Peter van Binsbergen, CEO of BMW Group South Africa
and the first South African to occupy this seat, said: “BMW Group
Plant Rosslyn is an iconic production facility within the BMW Group,
and BMW Group South Africa is a global success story for the business!

“Plant Rosslyn represents a cornerstone of the BMW Group’s global
production network of more than 30 sites in 15 countries. We built BMW
3 Series here for more than 30 years; a period that included
production of the iconic 333i and the cherished 325iS ‘Gusheshe’. BMW
South Africa benefited from the successful adoption of a
government-endorsed export programme from 1995 before transitioning to
an “X” plant in 2018.

“Given our rich and colourful history, while we acknowledge our past,
our 50th celebration is an equally good time to look ahead.
I can only say thank you to the people of South Africa for allowing us
to serve you for the past 50 years. We are not only a corporate
citizen in South Africa, but through our people and our vehicles, we
are a part of the fabric of South African society. Wait until you see
what we intend for the next 50 years!”

Production at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn.

The clearest demonstration of the BMW Group’s long-term commitment to
South Africa, BMW Group Plant Rosslyn has over the years produced
iconic cars unique to South Africa. Products such as the BMW 2000 SA,
BMW 745i, BMW 530 MLE, BMW 333i, as well as the BMW 325iS have laid
the basis for the typical BMW brand DNA to become genuinely South African.

A Training Academy was established at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn in 1978
to equip craftspeople for the Plant. Even in the pre-democracy period,
it was distinctive for accepting learners irrespective of their
ethnicity. In 2018, the company opened a R73 million Training Academy
at Plant Rosslyn, and in April 2019, a brand-new R109 million Retailer
Training Centre was opened at the Midrand headquarter to support its
retailer partners.

The BMW Group has since 1995 invested more than R12.6 billion into
the production facility that, in 1999, became the first in the world
to achieve certification for its integrated quality, health and
safety, as well as environmental management system (ISO 9001, ISO
14001 and BS 8800). An award-winning production facility, BMW Group
Plant Rosslyn was bestowed Gold and Platinum honours in 2002 and 2015,
respectively, in the respected JD Power Initial Quality Study.

Plant Rosslyn would go on to produce 1,191,604 BMW 3 Series over five
generations, before changing to BMW X3 production in 2018. More than
300,000 BMW X3s have been produced at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn. The
bulk of these units are exported to more than 40 markets, including 14
African countries.

Sustainability and efficiency are central to BMW Group Plant
Rosslyn’s strategic direction, and it is a common thread throughout
the facility’s value chain. Several key projects support Plant
Rosslyn’s sustainability goals. They include, since 2015, the Bio2Watt
partnership in pursuit of a carbon-neutral electricity supply, and a
zero-waste-to-landfill project where waste is converted into bricks
used for low-cost housing.

A social and cultural beacon.

BMW Group South Africa’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
efforts are concentrated under the banner #WeBuildMoreThanJustCars.
The company prides itself on building communities, opportunities,
sustainable solutions, industry, and emotions. Sustainable educational
activities are focussed at the Ntšha-Peu and Lethabong schools in
Soshanguve, outside Pretoria, which is home to many BMW associates
employed at Plant Rosslyn. These primary and secondary schools benefit
from a close relationship with BMW Group South Africa that span
facilities and resources, to learner mentoring programmes.

Our cultural engagement.

For over five decades, the BMW Group has been supporting hundreds of
cultural initiatives worldwide. Unrestricted freedom of creative
potential is of the utmost importance, as it is equally as crucial for
the field of art as it is for ground-breaking innovations within a
successful business enterprise. BMW Group South Africa supports local
artists via its partnerships with The Southern Guild, and the BMW
Young Collectors Co, among others. The longest-standing relationship,
however, has been forged with Dr “Mam” Esther Mahlangu, a global icon
of traditional Ndebele art. In 1991, Dr Mahlangu became the first
African, and the first female, to adorn a BMW Art Car. Our
relationship with Dr Mahlangu continues as she embarks on her first
ever retrospective exhibition taking place in South Africa, the USA,
and Europe from 2024 to 2027.

Honouring the past, setting course for the future.

Celebrating its 50th year allows BMW Group South Africa to
look back at its unparalled history, its achievements, and its
successes. Looking to the future, its local operations will refine
their focus on sustainability (as an automotive manufacturer and a
responsible corporate citizen), and the further expansion of the
global BMW IT Hub situated in Pretoria’s Menlyn Maine.

As the fastest growing innovation hub in the BMW Group, this crucial
department provides IT services for core global BMW Group processes,
including production and logistics, finance, and sales. The hub
contributed R2.6 billion to the South African economy in 2022, with a
staff complement totalling more than 2,000.

In 2023, the BMW Group South Africa directly and indirectly employs
close to 23,000 people. This year, the company will reinforce its
commitment to South Africa and its people, highlighting its
benchmark-setting corporate responsibility partnerships and outlining
the future of its state-of-the-art Rosslyn production facility. The
company’s steadfast BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad fans are sure to be
kept on the edge of their seats throughout the year.

A 50 year of BMW Group South Africa logo has been created for the
commemorative year, inspired by a work of art crafted by Dr Esther
Mahlangu. This logo will be used in all communication of BMW Group

Leipzig. An era is coming to an end at the BMW Group
plant in Leipzig. The serial production of the BMW i3 is now to come
to an end, some eight and a half years after it was launched. A source
of inspiration, a driver of innovation, a pioneer of locally
emission-free driving pleasure: The list of attributes that have
accompanied the BMW Group's first large-series production automobile
with fully electric drive since its debut in 2013 is long. The BMW i3
started out as an exotic specimen on the still barely tapped market
for electric vehicles, developed into a classic with unmistakable
charisma already in the course of its production period and goes down
in the company's history as a pioneer of sustainable mobility.

For the BMW Group Plant Leipzig, the farewell to the BMW i3 is linked
to the start of a new chapter in electric mobility. In a seamless
transition, further e-drive components will be manufactured there with
immediate effect in addition to producing high-voltage battery
modules, which is already being done since May 2021. And already next
year, the next generation of the MINI Countryman will be manufactured
at the same location - with a fully electric drive, among other
things. In this way, the electric mobility expertise of the workforce,
which has been built up over the past years, will be used and advanced
further. At the same time, the BMW Group Plant Leipzig becomes the
first location in the company's global production network where BMW
and MINI models are manufactured together.

The final anniversary: 250
,
000 units of electric driving pleasure made in Leipzig.

The BMW i3 ends its production run with an impressive homerun. Just a
few days ago, the 250,000 unit of the compact e-vehicle was produced
in Leipzig. This makes the BMW i3 the world's most successful electric
vehicle in the premium compact segment. And contrary to what might be
expected for a model that is being phased out, its popularity did not
wane as it matured.

The BMW i3 has been sold in more than 74 countries around the world.
In many markets, it achieved a significantly higher market share in
the electric vehicle segment than the BMW brand in the area of
conventionally powered cars. It also succeeded in inspiring additional
target groups in the premium mobility offers from BMW. In the early
years, more than 80 per cent of all BMW i3 buyers were new customers
for the BMW Group.

The enduring appeal of the BMW i3, which is manufactured exclusively
at the Leipzig site for the entire global market, is also due to its
especially individualistic character. Its independent vehicle
architecture consists of a drive module as an aluminium chassis, which
carries the e-drive, the suspension and the high-voltage battery as
well as a passenger cell made of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic
(CFRP) called the life module. This design, developed from the outset
for pure e-mobility, made possible a particularly generous amount of
space in the interior and a cockpit and centre console design which is
both high-quality and very advanced. The same applies to the exterior
design, which is still groundbreaking in its ninth year of production,
and which is dedicated less to fashion or status than to technological avant-gardism.

Visionary technology standard-bearer with great symbolic power.

These characteristics have not only made the BMW i3 into a
trailblazer for the transformation to CO2-free mobility,
but are also proof of how innovative the BMW Group is in a wide range
of areas. "The BMW i3 has great symbolic power," says Oliver
Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. He describes the
development of the BMW i3 as a prime example of the "BMW
way". This is characterised in particular by the courage to
"pioneer topics, to do something different and not just follow
the mainstream". This mindset continues to endure, according to
Zipse, because "even the BMW iX, which is quite surprising in its
capabilities, has its origins in this corporate culture".

The employees involved in manufacturing the BMW i3 at the BMW Group
Plant Leipzig know all too well what this culture means in practice.
After all, the BMW i3 was a visionary technology standard-bearer from
day one, and not just because of its electric drive. With its
Life-Drive architecture, it also set new standards in the field of
intelligent lightweight construction. In Leipzig, innovative processes
unique in the automotive industry have been established for moulding
large-format car body parts from the particularly lightweight
high-tech material CFRP. Today, the BMW Group has unique expertise in
the industrial use of carbon fibre in body construction and aluminium
in designing chassis components.

"The BMW i3 is a true pioneer and the epitome of pioneering
spirit," says Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of
Management for Production at BMW AG. "Thanks to the BMW i3, the
Leipzig plant became the birthplace of e-mobility at BMW." With
the expansion of the production of e-drive components, the Leipzig
plant will remain "electric" in the future, says
Nedeljković. "It will become the hub for electric mobility and
supply our production network worldwide with components."

Innovation driver for e-mobility and multiple award winner.

Thanks to its model-specific technology developments, the BMW i3 has
also become an innovation driver for the BMW and MINI brands in
numerous other areas. The 135 kW electric motor of the BMW i3s has
been delivering urban driving fun and locally emission-free go-kart
feeling in MINI style since 2020. The purely electric MINI Cooper SE
has since become the most popular model variant of the British brand.

Originally developed for the BMW i3, the fifth generation of BMW
eDrive technology is now being produced. It is used in numerous purely
electric and plug-in hybrid models from BMW and MINI. The ramp-up of
electric mobility will continue in the coming years. By 2030, every
second BMW Group vehicle sold worldwide is to be fully electric.

The BMW i3 has received numerous awards during its production period.
In Germany, it was awarded the "Green Steering Wheel” already in
2013, followed three years later by the "Golden Steering
Wheel", also awarded by "Auto Bild" and "Bild am
Sonntag". The design, vehicle concept, interior, sustainability,
value retention and connectivity technology of the BMW i3 received
further national and international awards and public survey successes.
These include class victories in the competitions of the magazines
"Auto Zeitung" and "auto, motor und sport", awards
as "UK Car of the Year", "Green Car of the Year",
"Classic of the Future" and "Swiss Car of the
Year" as well as the "World Car Design Award", the
"iF gold product design award" and the French "Trophée
de l'argus".

Rethinking mobility: The holistic approach of the BMW i brand.

In addition to the all-electric drive, the BMW i3's outstanding
eco-balance also stems from the choice of materials, which is fully
geared towards sustainability and resource-conserving production. It
was the first BMW Group model to receive an ISO certificate issued by
independent auditors at the time of its market launch, confirming its
optimised environmental performance throughout its entire life cycle.

Partly recycled raw materials are used for its outer skin made of
thermoplastics. The plastic used in the interior is made up of 25
percent recycled material. The textiles used for the seat surfaces are
made entirely from recycled fibres. The door panels of the BMW i3 are
made of kenaf fibres. Eucalyptus wood from certified cultivation in
Europe serves as the raw material for parts of the instrument panel.

The holistic concept for sustainability also includes the extensive
use of renewable energy in the production of the BMW i3. Four wind
turbines on the site of the BMW Group plant in Leipzig supply the
electricity needed for its production. At an early stage, they made
the Saxon location a pioneer for CO2-neutral vehicle
production, which has been standard in all BMW Group plants around the
world since last year.

In addition, the BMW i brand has provided impetus for sustainable
driving pleasure and a comprehensive transformation to CO2-neutral
mobility in many ways and far beyond the development of electrically
powered vehicles. These activities include the urban car-sharing
service DriveNow (called SHARE NOW today) which for many users is the
ideal opportunity to come into contact with electric mobility for the
first time, as well as the services now known as BMW Charging and MINI
Charging for convenient charging at home and for easily accessing
public charging stations, and the BMW Group's participation in the
European fast-charging network Ionity.

The perfect introduction to the world of e-mobility - and a
reliable endurance runner.

For many customers, the BMW i3 became a constant companion early on
in urban settings, for the daily commute and often far beyond. The
frequent drivers among the "early adopters" above all praise
the low energy and maintenance costs, but also how reliable the
vehicle is and the cycle stability of its high-voltage battery. They
report on brake pads that have not had to be replaced even after more
than 250,000 kilometres, because a large part of the deceleration
power is provided by recuperation when driving the BMW i3, and of the
impressive long-term quality of the high-voltage battery, which leads
to only a negligible reduction in range even after similarly long
running times. The BMW Group took this positive experience as an
opportunity to increase the maximum mileage associated with the
eight-year warranty period for the battery from 100,000 to 160,000
kilometres at the beginning of 2020.

The BMW i3's high-voltage battery has undergone continuous
development since its market launch, doubling its storage capacity
while retaining the same installation space. With a cell capacity of
120 ampere hours (Ah) and a gross energy content of 42.2 kilowatt
hours (kWh), it now enables ranges of up to 307 kilometres (BMW i3)
according to WLTP.

The high-voltage batteries developed and produced by the BMW Group
are used in other areas as well. Examples of this are the
Streetscooter vans used by the German postal service and the city
buses of the Turkish manufacturer Karsan, as well as motorboats with
electric drives of the Torqeedo brand, for which they also serve as a
source of energy. In addition, BMW i high-voltage batteries are used
as stationary energy storage systems for electricity generated from
renewable sources such as wind or solar power. The BMW Group plant in
Leipzig also has such an energy storage farm. It consists of 700
interconnected BMW i3 high-voltage batteries in which the electricity
generated by the four wind turbines on the plant site can be stored.

Locally emission-free, elegant and exclusive: The HomeRun
Edition of the BMW i3s.

On its home stretch, the BMW i3 once again showcases the elegant and
extravagant side of its character that has already been the subject of
several limited special models. The BMW i3s HomeRun Edition, was
treated to a Frozen paint finish from BMW Individual for the first
time. This premiere is associated with a maximum of exclusivity: Only
ten units of the BMW i3s HomeRun Edition have been produced.

An an exclusive for the BMW i3s HomeRun Edition, two new BMW
Individual paint finishes have been added to the range: Frozen Dark
Grey and Frozen Red II. In addition the HomeRun Edition includes
20-inch light-alloy wheels in a double-spoke design, an electrically
operated glass roof, solar control glazing and Adaptive LED
headlights. The special models also come with the particularly
high-quality Suite interior design, which includes Vernasca Dark
Truffle leather upholstery, a leather instrument panel, a leather
steering wheel with galvanised trim, a Carum Grey roof lining, Ambient
lighting and the welcome light. Other options include heated seats,
comfort access, alarm system, Real Time Traffic Information, Concierge
Service, Park Distance Control and rear view camera. Also included are
the Comfort package and Driving Assistant Plus, the Professional
navigation system, telephony with wireless charging, the Harman Kardon
hi-fi speaker system and online entertainment with music flat rate.

The production of the ten special models was a final highlight not
only for the employees involved in its production at the BMW Group
Plant Leipzig. Customers of the special models were able to witness
the completion of the vehicles in the assembly hall for themselves.

Press Contact: Hailey Philander
Tel: +27-71-666-2070
E-mail: hailey.philander@bmw.co.za

Press Release,Drive Technologies,Research & Development,i3,Production,Production Plants,Locations,Sustainability,Product,BMW

Midrand. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, which builds the
BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) for South Africa and around 30
export markets, has added 16 African countries to its portfolio. BMW
Group Plant Rosslyn, situated outside Pretoria, has produced vehicles
since 1968 and was established as the first BMW Group production
facility outside Germany.

Plant Rosslyn first produced the BMW X3 in April 2018, after a R6.2bn
investment to prepare it for production after close to 35 years of BMW
3 Series production. The investment – one of the biggest in the local
automotive industry at the time – was used to upgrade the plant into
one of the world’s most modern production facilities. More than
300,000 BMW X3s have been produced at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn.

The continuation of the BMW X3 story in South Africa, from its
mid-lifecycle refresh in 2021, reaffirms the group’s commitment to
operations in the country and, with the story extending beyond
national borders, to the rest of Africa. The updated BMW X3 is being
produced for 16 sub-Saharan African markets, including Senegal,
Nigeria, Angola, Kenya, and Ethiopia. BMW X3s for these markets were
previously sourced from BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the United States.

Johan Mouton, Plant Director at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn, says: “The
BMW X3 remains a crucial vehicle in our global production network and
now, with exports to 16 African markets, it is also critical to our
success on our continent. Ours has been a long-term commitment to the
development of this company and the communities it has served for
close to 50 years. As such, we are honoured to have the opportunity to
build BMW X3s in Africa, for Africa, too.”

Peter van Binsbergen, CEO of BMW Group South Africa and sub-Saharan
Africa, comments: “The addition of 16 key export markets is further
evidence of the increased trade relations within the Southern African
Development Community (SADC) and the broader African Continental Free
Trade Agreement region. We all have a role to play in encouraging
stronger trade relations on the continent, and I am especially proud
of the BMW X3’s ambassador role – both for the BMW Group and South Africa.”

BMW Group Plant Rosslyn currently produces the third generation of
the BMW X3 SAV and is able to manufacture up to 75,000 units per year,
of which 96% is exported.

Press Contact: Deena Govender
Tel: +27-12-522-2017
E-mail: deena.govender@bmw.co.za

X3,Press Kit,Production Plants,Locations,G01,Product,BMW

Dingolfing. Standard production of the fully-electric
BMW iX began today in Dingolfing. The plant in Lower Bavaria now
produces vehicles with all drivetrain variants, i.e. combustion-engine
vehicles, plug-in hybrids and fully-electric models, on a single line.
Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG,
responsible for Production: “The launch of the BMW iX marks another
milestone in our expansion of electrification and demonstrates our
production network's successful transformation towards electromobility
and digitalisation.”

The BMW iX is being manufactured at the BMW Group’s largest European
production plant on an assembly line with the flexibility to build a
mix of BMW 5 Series, 7 Series and 8 Series models. To handle this
flexibility and variety of drivetrains, vehicle assembly in Dingolfing
has been expanded and refurbished. The BMW Group has invested a total
of more than 400 million euros in producing the BMW iX at the
Dingolfing vehicle plant. Many of the remodelling and structural
measures required for the BMW iX are already benefiting future
generations of the BMW 7 Series and 5 Series that will come off the
production line in Dingolfing in the coming years. Fully-electric
variants have also been announced for both model ranges.

Half of production volume already electrified by mid-decade

With the BMW iX and other PHEV models at Plant Dingolfing alone, the
BMW Group plans to double the percentage of electrified vehicles
produced this year compared to 2020. By the middle of the decade, half
the vehicles produced in Dingolfing will be electrified. The new model
will play an important part in this. “The BMW iX will already be one
of the highest-volume models at the location by next year,” according
to Nedeljković. The BMW iX will be followed in the (European) autumn
by the BMW i4, which will be built in Munich. At the end of next year,
all German plants will be producing at least one fully-electric vehicle.

Broad know-how: Vehicle and e-drive production on site

Production of the BMW iX in Dingolfing benefits from broad know-how
and expertise in the technologies located at the site. Close
interaction between these different areas enables a high level of
in-house activity and short lines of communication, as well as
ensuring optimum production technology overall. The fully-electric
heart of the BMW iX – the highly integrated e-drive and
fifth-generation battery, as well as the complete electric axle are
produced on site, together with the Dingolfing component plants.
Production capacity will be systematically expanded and, from 2022,
Dingolfing will be able to produce e-drives for more than half a
million electrified vehicles.

BMW iX as trailblazer

The BMW iX introduces a multitude of innovations to the product and
production processes at the plant – especially in the vehicle’s
electrical system architecture, software, digital services,
connectivity and automated driving functions. As a result, the vehicle
plays an important role as a trailblazer and is making Dingolfing
“e-car” and “smart-car ready” as the BMW Group’s primary plant for the
luxury class.

The BMW iX is also an important trailblazer in production, bringing
future technologies into the production system – such as digital
methods for employee training, automation of logistics processes,
virtual commissioning and validation of driver assistance systems.

Christoph Schröder, head of BMW Group Plant Dingolfing: “As the
primary plant for the luxury class, our location produces the BMW
Group’s technology flagship. It is once again proving itself as a
pioneer for the mobility of tomorrow and as the industry leader in key
future areas of automotive activity, such as electrification,
digitalisation and sustainability. In this way, the BMW iX is
continuing the successful transformation of the BMW Group location in
Dingolfing that began long ago.”

Special focus on sustainability

The topic of sustainability is firmly anchored throughout the
company. A particular focus is on improving our carbon footprint –
especially in production of electric vehicles. Independent auditors
have confirmed that the greenhouse gas potential of the BMW iX
xDrive40* is around 45 percent lower than that of a comparable Sports
Activity Vehicle with an internal combustion engine. “We are already
the sustainability benchmark for our industry. But we will continue to
invest in resource-saving technologies and set ourselves ambitious
goals for the most sustainable production,” underlined head of
Production Milan Nedeljković. The BMW Group takes a holistic approach
to reducing CO2 emissions and minimising resource
consumption that covers the entire value chain, including production
as well as the supply chain and use phase.

The BMW Group has already succeeded in lowering resource consumption
per vehicle produced by more than half between 2006 and 2020.
CO2 emissions have been reduced even more significantly –
by as much as 78 percent. The aim is to reduce CO2
emissions per vehicle produced by another 80 percent by 2030. “To
achieve this, we have made some changes at Plant Dingolfing and
implemented a series of new measures,” says plant director Christoph
Schröder. For example, the BMW iX is produced exclusively using
regional and directly-sourced green power from two hydroelectric power
plants located on the Isar and Lech rivers. The entire plant, like all
BMW Group locations, will also be net carbon neutral from this year,
through the use of corresponding offsets and certificates.

Other aspects of sustainability range from energy-efficient
installations to packaging planning, through transport logistics and
recycling, up to and including topics such as biodiversity and water
management. Plant Dingolfing is therefore able to achieve a recycling
rate of more than 90 percent and an even higher recoverability rate of
over 99 percent. The plant’s own wells meet over 40 percent of its
water needs, thereby helping conserve the region’s drinking water
reserves. The BMW Group has already reduced its water consumption by
more than 30 percent overall since 2006.

BMW iX as catalyst for change: Active shift in competence.

The BMW iX creates a need for additional training beyond the
extensive experience and expertise that is already available. It is
accelerating the shift in competence already taking place within the
production network and helping prepare the workforce for the demands
of a new era. In this way, employee development across the entire
company is being geared towards digitalisation and e-mobility. As part
of the biggest training offensive in the company’s history, 75,000
staff are being trained in future areas of activity.

In Dingolfing alone, more than 4,000 employees have moved to jobs
with strong future prospects since 2012. A current example of this is
the creation and expansion of the Competence Centre for E-Drive
Production at the location, which doubled its staff numbers last year
from 600 to 1,200. This number is likely to increase to over 1,900 by
the end of the year.

Munich. At BMW Group Plant Munich, everything is in
place for production of the fully electric BMW i4 to begin. After six
weeks of intensive conversion work, series production of vehicles has
resumed, with around 5,000 associates returning to the line. “We have
completed the comprehensive restructuring and conversion of the plant
successfully, on schedule and without complications,” said Plant
Director Robert Engelhorn. At the BMW Group’s home plant, a new era is
about to begin: “Our plant can now manufacture the fully electric BMW
i4 on the same line as diesel-, petrol- and hybrid-powered vehicles,”
Engelhorn added.

“Outstanding planning and preparation, and perfect collaboration
between the many in-house and external partners meant we were able to
ready BMW Group Plant Munich for the mobility concepts of the future
in the space of just six weeks,” Engelhorn reported. The entire
development and conversion of the plant came at an investment of
around €200 million. Approx. €700 million had already been invested
between 2015 and 2018 to install a new, resource-efficient paintshop
and extend the bodyshop for production of the BMW 3 Series.

In recent weeks, a particular challenge facing the team was the
confined space within the production halls, which made conversion and
installation work difficult. Previous systems had to be removed with
very little space to spare, and new ones installed and launched.
Before conversion work began, plans were made with the help of digital
tools that simulated the line sections, system designs and production
processes by virtual reality. “This allowed us to make the best
possible use of the limited space available in our plant, and to see
exactly which processes needed adjusting,” Engelhorn explained. Much
of the expertise for the upgrade came from production workers
themselves, who used VR goggles to obtain a clear picture of what
their stage of work would look like, and offered valuable feedback on
ergonomics and process optimisation.

The bodyshop at Plant Munich is a shining example of smart,
efficient integration, as the majority of production processes for the
BMW i4 can be carried out on existing bodyshop systems. Additional
systems were required merely for the floor assembly and rear section
of the BMW i4, as the electric drive and high-voltage battery mean
these are quite different from conventional architectures. The approx.
550-kilogram battery pack will be fitted to the body by a new, fully
automated battery assembly system, which uses camera systems to check
automatically if the battery pack is positioned correctly on the line.
The battery pack is also transported to the line and bolted to the
body fully automatically.

A new electric overhead conveyor has also been installed for BMW
i4 production, along with stronger conveyors in the vehicle finish
area. “This has been the most comprehensive overhaul of assembly in
the history of Plant Munich,” Robert Engelhorn pointed out.

As the number of driver assistance systems, safety equipment and
connectivity features steadily increases, function-testing of the
various in-car innovations and technologies during production is
becoming more and more complex. To meet the ever tougher quality
requirements, Plant Munich is making greater use of digitally
connected production and testing systems. Complex logistics and
production processes are also supported by myriad digitalisation
solutions and interconnected smart systems.

During the conversion of Plant Munich over recent weeks, the
focus was very much on integrating the BMW i4 into existing production
systems. But systems and processes were also prepared for series
production of the BMW M3, which will be manufactured on the same line
as well. Established back in 1922, the BMW Group’s home plant is now
set to deliver a wide-ranging product portfolio that includes not only
the BMW i4 but also the combustion- and hybrid-powered BMW 3 Series
Sedan and BMW 3 Series Touring, and the new BMW M3.

The tremendous flexibility of the plant and the extraordinary
skills of the team are impressive.

Munich/Shenyang. The BMW Group is systematically
pursuing its electrification strategy and will release the new BMW iX3
onto the global market by the end of 2020. Standard production of the
BMW core brand’s first pure electric model will get underway at the
BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture (BBA) in China in late summer
(in the northern hemisphere) as planned: BBA Plant Dadong will produce
the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) with a pure electric drive
train for the global market. The first of these electric vehicles will
be delivered to customers by the end of the year.

The testing required for homologation of the new BMW iX3 has now been
successfully completed and the results submitted to the regulatory
authorities in key automotive markets. “This is the first time we have
completed the entire homologation process for a fully electric model
in China and Europe at the same time. The staff on our testing team
mastered this unique challenge with tremendous dedication and
efficiency,” said Arno Keller, head of Development BMW iX3. More than
340 hours of testing, including over 7700 kilometres of test drives,
had to be completed within four weeks.

Preparations for production of the BMW iX3 were stepped up in
Shenyang in parallel. BBA has been building BMW iX3 pre-production
vehicles at Plant Dadong in Shenyang since the middle of last year.
The 200th pre-production model recently came off the assembly line and
test drives on Chinese roads began – allowing development and test
engineers to make final adjustments.

“We are right on schedule with our BMW iX3 pre-production vehicles
and will launch standard production in late summer, using
state-of-the-art technologies such as custom installation of the new
high-voltage battery and artificial intelligence for monitoring
parts,” explained Robert Küssel, BBA Plant Director Dadong. “We are
also producing the fully-electric BMW iX3 and the BMW X3 with
combustion engine on the same production line. This enables us to
achieve high efficiency and flexibility in production,” Küssel continued.

With the new BMW iX3, the BMW Group is adding another fully-electric
vehicle to its portfolio that will not only tap into new customer
groups, but also arrives on the market at a time when demand for
electric vehicles is expanding significantly. The electric car is
based on the globally successful BMW X3 and combines the versatility
and robust functionality of a premium mid-size Sports Activity Vehicle
with ground-breaking drive technology for locally emission-free
driving pleasure. The BMW X3 is the brand’s first model available with
both conventional petrol and diesel engines, a plug-in hybrid system
or a pure electric drive train. This “Power of Choice” approach allows
the company to respond to the different needs and wants of its
customers worldwide and maximise its impact in reducing global CO2 emissions.

The BMW iX3 already comes with fifth-generation BMW eDrive
technology, including a drive unit with the electric engine, power
electronics and transmission highly integrated into a central housing.
This significantly reduces the installation space and mass of the
drive technology relative to output and offers added flexibility for
installing new electric powertrain components in different vehicle
derivatives. A further highlight is the electric motor, which no
longer requires the use of rare earths and ensures the BMW Group is
not depend on their availability.

The fifth-generation electric drive train also includes new and more
powerful high-voltage batteries. Thanks to their scalable, modular
design, these can be used flexibly in the respective vehicle
architecture and at the respective production locations.

With a range of around 440 kilometres in the WLTP test cycle
(preliminary data), the BMW iX3 paves the way for BMW eDrive
technology, which will also be used in BMW i4 and BMW iNEXT models
from 2021 on.

Press Contact: Hailey Philander
Tel: +27-71-666-2070
E-mail: hailey.philander@bmw.co.za

Press Release,Drive Technologies,Research & Development,Efficient Dynamics,Production,Production Plants,Locations,G08,iX3,Industry 4.0,Product,BMW

Midrand, South Africa – BMW Group South Africa
despatched the first proudly South African BMW X3 cars for export on
Friday, transporting more than 100 units on 27 wagons via train to the
Port of Durban. This marked a significant day for BMW Group South
Africa as the company’s manufacturing plant at Rosslyn, Tshwane,
continues to ramp up production of the BMW X3.

Tim Abbott, CEO of BMW Group South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa said
it was “a big moment for us at BMW Group South Africa”.

“It’s the result of a R6.1bn investment into the country and the
culmination of three years of hard work and planning. It’s really
exciting to know that BMW Group Plant Rosslyn has joined the enormous
success story of BMW’s X models globally, and goes to show the power
of combining good industrial policy and foreign investment,” Mr Abbott added.

In terms of the Automotive Production and Development Programme
(APDP), BMW Group announced a R6.1bn investment to prepare the Rosslyn
facility, and the associates who work there, for X3 production. It is
one of the biggest single automotive investments in South African
history. In February 2018, Plant Rosslyn produced the last of 1 191
604 BMW 3 Series cars built over five model generations and 35 years.

Upgrading the plant for X3 production has represented the largest
infrastructure upgrade in the plant’s history, but it has gone ahead
on time and without any unplanned disruptions. On Friday, in the
culmination of these efforts, the first South Africa-built BMW X3s
were loaded onto a train bound for their European customers.

The BMW Vehicle Distribution Centre in Rosslyn can accommodate up to
three train despatches a week, with each transport capable of carrying
up to 160 cars.

BMW Group Plant Rosslyn is a state-of-the-art facility, with BMW X3
production initially planned with a maximum capacity of 71000 units a
year. However, BMW under-estimated the phenomenal demand for the new
BMW X3 and, after a further R160m investment to increase linespeed,
the maximum capacity of the plant was raised almost 10% to 76000 units
a year. Within this maximum capacity, BMW Group South Africa is
confident that the plant will produce record volumes next year. This
will add to the growing success of BMW’s X models across the world,
which now make up more than 30% of BMW’s global volume.

Midrand, South Africa – A new chapter in South
Africa’s automotive story began this week as BMW Group South Africa
started production of the new BMW X3 at its Rosslyn plant. With
customer vehicles now rolling off the line, BMW Group once again
demonstrates its commitment to its operations in South Africa.

In 2015, BMW Group announced a R6bn investment into South Africa in
order to prepare BMW Group Plant Rosslyn for the BMW X3 production.
This week, is the culmination of three years of hard work and planning
resulting in production starting on time in Rosslyn.

Ensuring that production follows demand

The BMW Group assigns production to its facilities around the world
on the basis of various factors. Demand for BMW’s X-derivative models
has grown to more than 30% of worldwide sales since the launch of the
first BMW X5 in 1999. BMW Group Plant Rosslyn was assigned production
of the new BMW X3 on the basis that demand exceeds the capacity of the
Group’s plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina. This change has secured
the future of Plant Rosslyn as well as the livelihoods of thousands of
people at facilities and in the supply chain.

BWM Group Plant Rosslyn was the first plant built by the BMW Group
outside of Germany. The plant built the BMW 3 Series for 35 years,
manufacturing a total of 1,191,604 units during the period, and
increasing production with every model. With a planned maximum
capacity of 71 000 units of the BMW X3, which was later increased
(with an additional R160m investment) to 76 000, BMW Group Plant
Rosslyn has the opportunity to flexibly match volumes to demand, and
to build more cars than ever before.

Tim Abbott, CEO of BMW Group South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa,
says the successful ramp-up of production of the BMW X3 at Rosslyn is
a vote of confidence in the country and in BMW Group South Africa’s associates.

“The allocation of production of such a crucial model to our plant is
about as big a vote of confidence as it gets,” Abbott says. “The
demand for the BMW X3 globally is powerful, and ramping up on time and
to the right standards is vital to the model’s success.”

“I have full confidence in our associates and plant management at
Rosslyn. This is the team that won the coveted JD Power Platinum award
in 2015, showing that a South African plant can lead the world in
terms of quality,” Abbott says.

A critical time for BMW Group South Africa

BMW Group’s investments in South Africa are made in terms of the
Automotive Production and Development Plan (APDP), which expires in
2020. Discussions about a replacement plan have been fruitful and are
ongoing, and are crucial for the long term outlook as well as the
stability of the automotive sector and BMW Group South Africa’s
commitment to the country.

BMW Group South Africa is proud of its progress in terms of
localising production of as many components as possible for the BMW
X3, which makes this model the most “local” vehicle it has ever built.
Equally, BMW Group is a leading participant in a proposed venture fund
to develop more black-owned suppliers in the South African automotive
supply chain. BMW’s contribution to ramping up automotive exports,
large-scale employment in dignified and safe jobs as well as other
factors make up the content of discussions with the government, labour
partners and component suppliers.

The BMW X3 was the car that launched the mid-size SAV (Sports
Activity Vehicle) segment in 2003. Since then, BMW has recorded more
than 1.5 million new registrations of the X3 across the two model
generations so far. Since the global launch in the last quarter of
2017, the new BMW X3 is set to write the next chapter in this success
story with an even more striking, dynamic design language, powerful
yet also efficient drive systems and luxurious appointments. Like all
members of the successful X family, it blends standout driving
qualities on any terrain with unrestricted everyday usability.

Rosslyn, Pretoria – Yesterday marked yet another
significant milestone for BMW Group South Africa when the last BMW 3
Series Sedan rolled off the production line at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn
in Pretoria. The plant has produced a total of 1,191,604 five
generations of the BMW 3 Series and will begin a new era of producing
the new BMW X3 in the coming months. The BMW 3 Series will continue
its current lifecycle and be produced by other plants within the BMW
Group production network. In addition, it will now be imported into
South Africa.

“We look back with great pride over an extraordinary career path of
the production of the five generations of the BMW 3 Series at Plant
Rosslyn. Over the years, the development of our production and export
programme has been the catalyst for our sustainable growth and
contribution to the South African economy. With the imminent
production of the new BMW X3, we remain a committed and engaged
corporate citizen dedicated to the upliftment of South Africa and its
people,” says Tim Abbott, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BMW Group
South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.

In November 2015, BMW Group South Africa reaffirmed its long term
commitment to South Africa by announcing that it will invest a total
of R6 billion at Plant Rosslyn. The investment – one of the biggest in
the local automotive industry – has enabled Plant Rosslyn to get ready
to produce the new BMW X3, which will be sold locally and exported to
Europe. In October 2017, an additional R160 million was pumped into
the Rosslyn manufacturing facility to enhance production line speed.

Stefan Hülsenberg, Director of BMW Plant Rosslyn, says that the
enhancement has raised the maximum production capacity by almost 10%,
from 71 000 units to 76 000 units, leaving the plant with excellent
potential in the future to produce the highest volume ever in its
45-year history. “Plans to create a center of production excellence at
our plant are well under way with the largest infrastructure upgrade
in the history of the facility now completed and staff upskilled in
state-of-the-art technologies. Supplier development and localisation
strategies are in progress, and we are confident that the new BMW X3
will be more localised than the BMW 3 Series we’ve produced. We are
continuing to build our future together,” Hülsenberg adds.

The BMW 3 Series Sedan is currently produced at BMW Group Plants in
Munich, Regensburg, Araquari (Brazil), Chennai (India), Rayong
(Thailand) and Mexico (from 2019). It is also produced at the BMW
Brilliance Automotive (BBA) Joint Venture in China as well as partner
plants in Russia, Malaysia, Indonesia and Egypt.

BMW 3 Series – the legacy of BMW Plant Rosslyn.

One of the key milestones of the BMW 3 Series has been the success in
founding the segment of the modern sports sedan, establishing itself
as the embodiment of driving pleasure in its segment and becoming the
world’s top-selling premium car. South Africans even nicknamed each
generation of the BMW 3 Series that was produced at Plant Rosslyn.
Limited edition models of the BMW 3 Series such as the BMW 333i and
325iS also emerged from the 45-year old plant.

In June 2015, BMW Plant Rosslyn was awarded the Platinum Plant
Quality Award in the J.D. Power 2015 Initial Quality Study (IQS) for
producing BMW 3 Series models with the fewest defects or malfunctions.
This award made Plant Rosslyn the best plant in the world in the
Initial Quality Study 2015 and the second time a BMW plant anywhere in
the world won a platinum award in the IQS Study.

The “Gusheshe” – second generation BMW 3 Series.

The second generation of the BMW 3 Series, affectionately known as
the “Gusheshe” or “Bhotsotso” in South Africa, was a worthy successor
to the trendsetting, bestselling original. Produced at Plant Rosslyn
from 1983 to 1992, the new model embodied progress and diversity. A
new design, optimised aerodynamics, more space and comfort, extra
power and additional body and engine variants were all part of the mix.

The new car’s lines were significantly tauter and smoother than those
of its predecessor, and its drag coefficient had been reduced by
almost 15 per cent. All model variants, regardless of engine size,
were now fitted with twin circular headlights as standard. Although
the second-generation 3 Series offered four centimetres of extra
legroom inside, its body was actually three centimetres shorter than
the previous model. The front indicator lights were relocated from the
wing tip into the bumper. The characteristic side view was given a
fresh interpretation, while a broader B-pillar painted matt black
provided a stronger-looking centre. The 35-millimetre-wider track,
meanwhile, gave the new car a muscular appearance. To top it all, the
BMW development engineers had shaved around 30 kilograms off the car’s
weight – despite its more generous equipment levels.

Two engine derivatives (BMW 333i and 325iS) were built exclusively
for the local market. A total of 98,003 third generation BMW 3 Series
models were produced at Plant Rosslyn while a total of 2,339,000 have
been sold worldwide.

The “Dolphin” – third generation BMW 3 Series.

The third-generation BMW 3 Series – nicknamed “The Dolphin” by South
Africans – took to the stage in 1990 with extremely elegant contours
and a thoroughly overhauled spread of technology. Produced at Plant
Rosslyn between 1992 and 1997, it was available from launch as a
four-door for the first time. The body had grown significantly in
terms of exterior dimensions to create an even more comfortable and
safer passenger compartment, and it offered occupants noticeably more
space. Those in the rear, for example, could look forward to 30
millimetres of extra knee room. Despite its increase in size, the
car’s basic form also displayed an undeniably sporty edge. The long
wheelbase, short overhangs, 1,418-millimetre front track and
1,431-millimetre rear track gave a strong hint of the new 3 Series’
outstanding driving attributes.

A total of 84,876 units were produced at Plant Rosslyn while
2,746,000 were sold worldwide. In 1993, the third generation BMW 316i
won the Wesbank / SA Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) Car of the
Year (COTY) competition.

The “G-String” – fourth generation BMW 3 Series.

In 1998 the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series set out on the road
to the next century riding a wave of stylish continuity and
unrelenting technical progress. Nicknamed “The G-String” by South
African’s because of the design of its steering wheel, its
proportions, lines and stylistic elements represented an expression of
sporting elegance and left no doubt that the BMW 3 Series had
established itself once and for all as the unmistakable original in
its segment. The fourth generation BMW 3 Series, which was produced at
Plant Rosslyn between 1997 and 2004, was once again launched in
four-door sedan form, and had grown by four centimetres in both length
as well as width compared to its predecessor. The BMW kidney grille
was now integrated into the bonnet and teamed up with twin circular
headlights behind clear covers to give the front end of the car a
striking character. The dynamic ability of the new Sedan was
accentuated by its stretched lines and more prominently arched
roofline. Another signature BMW design feature were the L-shaped rear
lights. The car’s interior had also grown to reflect its exterior
dimensions. Both the front and rear seats offered more room to move.
Knee room in the rear compartment had been increased by 20
millimetres, while 10 millimetres had been added to the available headroom.

The fourth-generation BMW 3 Series benefited more than ever from
expertise accumulated during the development of models in higher
segments. The interplay of the body and chassis, the car’s interior
appointments and its safety concept all took their cues from the BMW 7
Series. The newly designed instrument panel looked modern, well sized
and high in quality, and equipment features such as a multifunction
steering wheel, side airbags in the rear, rain-sensing wipers and a
navigation system set new benchmarks in the segment.

A total of 269,810 were produced at Plant Rosslyn while a total of
3,267,000 were sold worldwide. The fourth generation BMW 320d also won
the 2001 Wesbank / SAGMJ COTY competition.

The “Tweezer” – the fifth generation BMW 3 Series.

The fifth generation of the BMW 3 Series – affectionately known as
“The Tweezer” by South Africans – celebrated its world premiere at the
2005 Geneva International Motor Show. In what was now the regular
running order for model range launches, the four-door Sedan was the
first model variant to be introduced. Produced at Plant Rosslyn
between 2004 and 2011, its striking appearance – with short body
overhangs, dynamic lines and a progressive design language – imbued it
with an unmistakable character from day one. The new symbiosis of
powerful and efficient engines, dynamic yet refined driving
characteristics, eye-catching design (with the familiar BMW use of
forms), a spacious body with impressive torsional rigidity and
innovative equipment features met with enthusiastic approval around
the world. In its first year post-launch, the new BMW 3 Series was
awarded the title “World Car of the Year” in New York.

The far more imposing and powerful aura of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan
compared to its predecessor was the result of a more striking design
and larger dimensions. Indeed, the new car added 49 millimetres in
length, 78 millimetres in width and 10 millimetres in height. This
all-round growth was used to the benefit of occupant comfort and
safety. However, intelligent lightweight design meant that, despite
the car’s extra size and equipment, it was no heavier on the scales.

A total of 356,257 units were produced at Plant Rosslyn while
3,102,000 were sold worldwide.

The sixth generation BMW 3 Series

The current, sixth generation of the BMW 3 Series appeared on the
market in early 2012. Since then, the alluring array of individual
body variants has been extended yet further and, for the first time,
split into two model ranges. The BMW 3 Series Sedan was joined by the
BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, while the mid-size model portfolio now also
numbers the BMW 4 Series Coupe, BMW 4 Series Convertible and BMW 4
Series Gran Coupe.

Produced at Plant Rosslyn from 2012 to date, the market launch of the
new BMW 3 Series Sedan signalled yet another raft of innovations for
the mid-size segment in terms of drivetrain, chassis and safety as
well as driver assistance systems. The sixth-generation BMW 3 Series
Sedan was, for example, the first vehicle in this segment to offer an
8-speed Steptronic transmission. Likewise new and unique among the
competition was the BMW Head-Up Display, which projects
driving-related information onto the windscreen directly in the
driver’s field of view. Standard specifications for the BMW 3 Series
now also included the Driving Experience Control switch, air
conditioning, business navigation, TeleServices as well as Real Time
Traffic Information (RTTI) for added convenience. A hands-free
tailgate operation was also part of the package, among other features.
Enhanced safety came courtesy of the optional Active Protection and
Intelligent Emergency Call with automatic vehicle location.

To date a total of 382,658 sixth generation BMW 3 Series models have
been produced at Plant Rosslyn while over two million vehicles have
been sold worldwide – one in every four BMW 3 Series Sedan sold
globally was produced at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn. In 2013, the BMW
320i was a finalist in the Wesbank / SAGMJ Car of the Year Competition.

Plant Rosslyn
, the heart of the BMW Group in South Africa.

Production at BMW Group Plant Rosslyn dates back to 1968, when
Praetor Monteerders began assembling cars, utilising BMW engines and
drive-trains fitted to Hans Glass sheet metal pressed and shipped from
Dingolfing in Germany.

In 1973, BMW AG took over full shareholding and established BMW Group
South Africa (Pty) Ltd with BMW Group Plant Rosslyn becoming the BMW
Group’s first manufacturing facility outside of Germany.

Since then, the BMW Group has been a major investor in South Africa
and its people, with BMW Group Plant Rosslyn moving from a limited
vehicle-production plant that merely assembled vehicles with a few
customisation possibilities for the local market, to a world-class
plant, capable of producing highly customised cars for customers
across the globe.

For example, the BMW Group was the first original equipment
manufacturer (OEM) to adjust its production model to capitalise on
exports, before the finalisation of the Motor Industry Development
Plan (MIDP) in 1999. Similarly, the BMW Group was the first OEM to
announce a new investment in South Africa before the finalisation of
this plan’s replacement, the APDP in 2009.

During this period, Plant Rosslyn’s production of the BMW 3 Series
and the BMW Group’s investment in South Africa has increased
substantially with each new generation as well.

BMW Group South Africa directly and indirectly employs over 40,000
people (associates at the plant and at the national sales
organisation, dealer staff and first-tier supplier employees). The
company has in recent years been named the number one employer in the
automotive industry in the Universum Most Attractive Employer Awards.
In addition, the South African Graduate Employers Association
(SAGEA) Graduate Recruitment Awards, bestowed the honour
of Employer of Choice in the Automotive Industry to BMW Group
South Africa in June 2015. The company’s Graduate Development
Programme remains highly favoured among graduate trainees.

“Plant Rosslyn is an important part of the BMW Group’s international
production network. The success story of BMW Group South Africa
continues,” concludes Hülsenberg.

Munich / Spartanburg. Production of the first
pre-production models of the new BMW X7 Sports Activity Vehicle has
commenced at the BMW Group Spartanburg plant, USA. So the countdown
has started for the final twelve months leading up to the presentation
of the production car at the end of 2018. Prior to this, the vehicle
will undergo various tests under partially extreme conditions.

Knudt Flor, head of the BMW Group Spartanburg plant: “We are proud to
produce the BMW X7 here in Spartanburg, the home of our X models. This
is a very special vehicle and our employees are looking forward to yet
a further member of the X family. Together with the BMW X7, a total of
five BMW X models will be exported from Spartanburg to all four
corners of the globe.”

Camouflage wrap conceals final look.
At the plant, the
production of pre-series models serves to secure and optimise future
series production. Consequently, BMW X7 pre-production models already
use the same assembly line as the BMW X5 and BMW X6 production models.
An especially trained team realises the series production process for
new vehicle models at the plant and qualifies employees for future
series production.

The pre-production models built at the BMW Group Spartanburg plant
are handed over to development department specialists, who require
them for homologation, registration as well as for diverse testing
purposes such as endurance tests and test drives under extreme
conditions in the desert regions of Death Valley or on the ice and
snow covered slopes of Scandinavia.

The pre-production model is fitted with its camouflage wrap while
still at the plant. The conspicuous striped patterns are designed to
help conceal the new SAV’s final look as far as possible.

Fifth series from the BMW Group Spartanburg plant.
In Spartanburg, the BMW Group produces BMW X models for
the USA and the global market.
With record production figures of
more than 411,000 units in 2016, Spartanburg is currently the BMW
Group’s largest plant worldwide. Around 70 percent of the vehicles
produced in Spartanburg are exported to 140 countries throughout the
world. According to the US Ministry of Trade, the BMW Group is
therefore the largest vehicle exporter in the USA measured in export
value. Maximum annual production capacity stands at around 450,000 vehicles.

The BMW Group Spartanburg plant employs more than 9,000 people; a
further 1,000 jobs are to be added by the year 2021. Each day, 1,400
BMW X3, X4, X5 and X6 models come off the assembly line at the
Spartanburg plant; these will be complemented by a fifth series, the
BMW X7, for which the Spartanburg plant is currently preparing.

To date, the BMW Group has invested eight billion US dollars in the
production location and has built around 3.9 million vehicles since
being taken into operation on 8 September 1994.

*Due to the pre-series vehicle status, technical details like fuel
consumption, CO2 emissions, etc. will be communicated later next year.

Knudt Flor, President and CEO of BMW Manufacturing Co

Governor McMaster,

Senator Graham,

Ambassador Wittig,

Distinguished Guests,

BMW Associates,

Good morning and welcome to BMW Plant Spartanburg!

Each and every one of you here today is important to the United
States, the state of South Carolina and to Plant Spartanburg, so I
would like to begin by taking a moment to recognize all elected
officials. Please be kind enough to stand for us so you may be
acknowledged. On behalf of the BMW Group, I would like to thank you
for twenty-five years of continued support and personal commitment to
this plant’s success. Thank you!

Governor McMaster, thank you for your continued efforts in promoting
this partnership, as many governors – especially the late Governor
Carroll Campbell - before you have done. We’d also like to say a
special “thank you” to Bobby Hitt, the Secretary of Commerce, who has
been instrumental in the tremendous growth of Plant Spartanburg.

From the BMW Group, I would like to introduce Mr. Harald Krueger,
Chairman of the Board of Management, and Mr. Oliver Zipse, Member of
the Board of Management, responsible for Production worldwide. We
welcome the national and international press, as we celebrate 25 Years
Spartanburg and the All-New BMW X3!

Also, please join me in welcoming our valued dealers and suppliers
from the U.S., our managers from Munich, and last, but certainly not
least, I am delighted to welcome all of our associates here on site -
the heart and soul of Plant Spartanburg!

25 years ago, our company reached an historic agreement with local
government to build our first U.S. BMW plant in the great state of
South Carolina. It was the start of something very special - a
wonderful friendship and a new beginning. As BMW’s Chairman, Mr.
Eberhard von Kuenheim stated back in 1992: “Seldom in the history of
our company, has a community extended such a warm welcome to us as
here in Spartanburg, in the state of South Carolina, USA. We have felt
at home here from the first day on.”

In 1994, Spartanburg began operations with 570 associates, under the
motto of “Welcome to the Future”. Today, we are proud to have over
9,000 associates here! Spartanburg has grown to become the largest
plant in the BMW Group’s worldwide production network. That, in
itself, is a very strong statement about our commitment to South
Carolina and to the U.S.

It is our global competence center for our very successful BMW X
vehicles. Currently, the plant produces X3, X4, X5 and X6 models, as
well as M and hybrid variants. We are looking forward to starting
production of the BMW X7 in late 2018. Today, we are delighted to give
you an exclusive world premiere of the All-New BMW X3. The BMW X3 is
without a doubt, the best vehicle in its segment. More on that shortly!

Of course, the success story of Plant Spartanburg wouldn’t have been
possible without people. People have made and continue to make the difference.

We are proud of the people who work here – they are highly skilled
and dedicated to building premium quality vehicles for our customers.
I am proud to be the leader of such an incredible team at such a
remarkable time. World class products are built here every single day.
It’s thanks to you, our associates that BMW feels very much at home
here in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

We are honored to have so many friends here and immensely proud to
call South Carolina “our home away from home”. It is our goal, and our
commitment, to remain a strong and reliable partner for our
associates, our customers, South Carolina, and the United States.

Of course, a picture is worth a thousand words – here’s a film to
remind us of a few highlights from the past 25 years.

Thank you!

Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG

Governor McMaster,

Senator Graham,

Ambassador Wittig,

Honored guests,

It’s great to be back in Plant Spartanburg again!

The film we just saw underscores the BMW Group’s strong commitment

to the United States of America,

to South Carolina,

and to all our associates and partners here in the U.S.

All of this shows that the U.S. is clearly our home away from home.

We are proud to be responsible for around 70,000 jobs in this great
nation – including dealer network and suppliers. The effect of that
employment multiplies to a total of more than 120,000 jobs nationwide.
This is according to a new study from the Moore School of Business at
the University of South Carolina. Furthermore, our purchasing volume
in America is now at 5.7 billion US dollars.

25 years ago, we made a crucial and forward looking decision. We
decided to build our first full production plant outside of Germany in
the U.S. – right here, in South Carolina. The BMW Group’s success in
America would not be possible without the open arms and warm hearts of
the people and elected officials in the great state of South Carolina
and the surrounding region.

Senator Graham, it is an honor to have you with us here today. We
greatly appreciate your ongoing support over the years.

Our relationship with South Carolina has been built upon decades of
mutual trust and respect – and goes far beyond just building cars.
Governor McMaster, as you have kindly said – we have become part of
the very fabric of this great state. And David Britt, we were deeply
touched by your words when you said: “BMW is the gift that keeps on giving”.

I am extremely proud of the highly skilled people who work here for
the BMW Group. Their passion for excellence ensures that BMW vehicles
built in the U.S. excite and inspire customers all over the world.
Some of my fondest memories are from my time here at the plant as a
manager. Since then, one thing has never changed – the unique spirit
that makes BMW Plant Spartanburg so special: It’s all about People,
Performance, Passion and Pride.

Today, I would like to thank all of our associates here, at Plant
Spartanburg, for their strong commitment. You bring this plant to life
– with your work, every single day. Thank you for your outstanding
dedication! I am sure you all would agree that our associates deserve
a round of applause.

Governor McMaster,

Senator Graham,

World-class people build world-class products. Today, Spartanburg is
our largest plant worldwide. It is the global competence center for
our X family vehicles, including the BMW X3. The BMW X3 is the most
successful vehicle in its segment worldwide. Today, we are very proud
to present you the third generation – “Built by BMW in the U.S. for
the world”!

About 70% of our production from Spartanburg is exported to more than
140 countries. Thanks to our great, hardworking team here in the U.S.,
BMW was once again the leading U.S. automotive exporter by value in
2016 - a title we hold with pride.

Free trade has made our joint success story in South Carolina and the
U.S. possible. A story, we want to continue, together with all of you.
I firmly believe in free trade and open markets. It is essential for
global businesses and economies around the world to flourish.

Altogether, the BMW Group has invested eight billion US dollars in
Plant Spartanburg to date. I am delighted to say, we are investing a
further 600 million US dollars in our manufacturing infrastructure
here, up to 2021. This is for future generations of our X models. In
the next four years, we will also create 1,000 new jobs, taking our
workforce here to over 10,000.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Training and qualifying our associates is key to our future success.
We believe in education! That’s why the BMW Group will invest $200
million over the next five years – solely for the training and further
education of associates at Spartanburg. In addition to this, we will
begin to roll out a nationwide training program. We work together with
local universities and colleges to offer a combination of training on
the job and earning a degree. We will keep investing in our people and
in our business in the U.S. This underscores our enduring commitment
to the people of this great state and nation.

Therefore, I remain confident: Our footprint and commitment will
continue to grow – not only in the Great State of South Carolina but
also in the United States in the years to come.

(Unveiling of new BMW X3)

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The new BMW X3!

I can tell you, it’s really amazing to drive. Over two generations,
the BMW X3 has been delivered to more than 1.5 million customers
worldwide. I’m certain: This new generation will raise the bar even
higher! Thanks to the team in Spartanburg for your great contribution.
“Built by BMW in the U.S. for the world”!

Governor McMaster, Senator Graham, Ambassador Wittig, Oliver, Knudt,
dear Associates – please come and join me on stage.

Munich/Spartanburg. The BMW Group has been a
committed “local player” in the US market for a quarter-century: On 23
June 1992, the BMW Group announced its decision to build its US plant
in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Continuous expansion of the plant with
extensive additions and the decision to build the successful BMW X
models in Spartanburg have made the plant the largest manufacturing
facility in the BMW Group production network within the space of 25
years. During the ceremony to mark the anniversary, the all-new BMW X3
rolled off the production line in Spartanburg. More than 1.5 million
BMW X3 vehicles have been delivered to customers worldwide since it
was first launched at the end of 2003. The new BMW X3 will be launched
in fall 2017.

Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, stated
at the ceremony: “The BMW Group’s success story in the US would not
have been possible without the open arms and warm hearts of the people
and elected officials in the great state of South Carolina and the
surrounding region. Our relationship with South Carolina has been
built upon decades of professionalism, mutual trust and respect – and
goes far beyond just building great cars.”

The BMW Group has invested eight billion US dollars in the production
location to date and produced around 3.9 million vehicles since going
online on 8 September 1994. “From 2018 to 2021 we will invest further
600 million US dollars in manufacturing infrastructure for future
generations of the BMW X models,” said Harald Krüger. At present, the
plant is getting ready for production of the all-new BMW X7, which
will be launched onto the market in late 2018.

The BMW Group produces BMW X models in Spartanburg for the US and
global markets. With record production of more than 411,000 units in
2016, Spartanburg is the largest BMW Group plant worldwide. Around
1,400 BMW X3, X4, X5, and X6 vehicles come off the assembly line every
working day. Maximum production capacity is 450,000 vehicles per year.

Around 70 percent of the vehicles produced in Spartanburg are
exported to more than 140 countries worldwide. According to the US
Department of Commerce, the BMW Group is the largest vehicle exporter
from the US in terms of monetary value. In 2016, 287,700 BMW vehicles
with a total value of more than 10 billion US dollars were exported
from Spartanburg: 86 percent were shipped from the Port of Charleston,
with the remaining 14 percent dispatched from five other ports in the
Southeastern United States.

The BMW Group has 235 local suppliers in the US. In 2016, 80 percent
of the BMW Group’s purchasing volume in the NAFTA area originated in
the US. The US is the company’s second-largest purchasing market,
after Germany, and accounts for 5.2 billion euros.

Harald Krüger: “Free trade has made this success story in the US
possible. I firmly believe in free trade and open markets. It is
essential for global businesses and economies around the world to
flourish. We will keep investing in our people and in our business in
the US. Therefore, I remain confident that our footprint and
commitment will continue to grow not only in the great state of South
Carolina, but also in the United States in the years to come.”

The Spartanburg plant employs more than 9,000 people. “By 2021we will
create further 1,000 jobs,” stated Harald Krüger. “Training and
qualifying our associates is key to our future success.” Training at
the plant is based on the German dual apprenticeship training system
that combines classroom learning with practical experience. In the
past ten years, the BMW Group has invested more than 220 million US
dollars in vocational and continued training at its Spartanburg
facility, with another 200 million US dollars planned over the next
five years. The training programs are run in cooperation with local
colleges. The “BMW Scholars” apprenticeship program launched in 2011
is currently preparing around 100 apprentices for their careers within
the plant.

According to an independent study of University of South Carolina
(Moore School of Business), the nationwide economic impact of BMW
Group Plant Spartanburg is 38.5 billion US dollars annually.

US sales market

In the first five months of 2017, the BMW Group delivered 137,916 BMW
and MINI vehicles to customers in the US (-4.8%). Sales of Sports
Activity Vehicles rose 13.8% and accounted for 46.8% of total US sales
in the year to the end of May (56,233 vehicles). 37.1% of the vehicles
sold in the US over the same period were produced at BMW Group Plant
Spartanburg. The BMW Group retail network in the USA comprises 657
dealerships. In total, the company supports approximately 70,000
direct and indirect jobs in the US. According to an independent study
of University of South Carolina (Moore School of Business), the
multiplier effect results in even more than 120,000 jobs, if further
50,000 jobs outside the automotive industry are also taken into account.

Rijswijk/Munich. As of August 2017, VDL Nedcar in
Born in the Netherlands will begin production of the BMW X1. The move
was jointly announced today by the BMW Group and the VDL Group. VDL
Nedcar will share production of the BMW X1 for the world market with
BMW Group Plant Regensburg. VDL Nedcar has built three MINI models in
Born since 2014.The BMW X1 will be the fourth BMW Group model to roll
off the production lines at VDL Nedcar.

Strong global demand for the BMW X1 requires additional capacity to
supplement production at the BMW Group plant in Regensburg, where the
second generation of this successful model has been manufactured since
July 2015. With eight different models built on a single line,
production volumes at BMW Group Plant Regensburg have risen
significantly in recent years. As a consequence of this successful
growth, the plant will share BMW X1 production with VDL Nedcar. Over
its lifecycle, the main volume of the BMW X1 will still be produced in
Regensburg, however.

BMW Group Plant Regensburg and VDL Nedcar are partner plants since
early 2014 and have established a close and successful collaboration.
VDL Nedcar has many years of experience manufacturing high-quality
cars and is a trusted and reliable partner for the BMW Group
production network. The involvement of VDL Nedcar as a contract
manufacturer gives the BMW Group the flexibility to respond quickly to
market demand for the BMW X1.

Peter Haug, Marketing Director of BMW Group Netherlands: “In the
Netherlands, demand for BMW X models has been very strong, especially
for the BMW X1. Last year, a total of 1,946 units were registered,
making it the best sales result since the first generation was
launched in 2009. In 2016, no less than 62.2 percent of all X models
sold in the Netherlands (3,131 in total) were BMW X1s, which means
that one in six BMW models sold was a BMW X1.”

Strong cooperation

Since 2014, VDL Nedcar has produced various MINI models, starting
with the three-door MINI in split production with BMW Group Plant
Oxford. The second model, the MINI Convertible, is exclusively built
in Born. On 2 November 2016, VDL Nedcar also began exclusive
production of the new MINI Countryman. In March 2017, VDL Nedcar will
start production of the new MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4, MINI’s
first plug-in hybrid, and the sporty MINI John Cooper Works Countryman
with 170 kW (231 hp).

BMW X models popular worldwide

In 2016, BMW sold a total of 2,003,359 vehicles (an increase of 5.2
per cent compared to 2015), of which 644,922 were X models (an
increase of 22.3 per cent compared to 2015). One in three BMW models
sold in 2016 was an X model.

Press Contact: Edward Makwana
Tel: +27-12-522-2227
E-mail: edward.makwana@bmw.co.za

Press Release,X1,Research & Development,Production,Production Plants,Locations,F48,Product,BMW

Munich/Oxford. MINI Plant Oxford is celebrating 100
years of production. And to mark the occasion, a centenary
exhibition was opened at the plant’s new Visitor Centre on 28 March
2013 by Britain’s Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin and Member
of the Board of Management at BMW Harald Krüger. 100 years ago to
the day, the plant’s first car – a “Bullnose” Morris Oxford – was
built just a stone’s throw away from where the current MINI
production facility stands.

Back in 1913 weekly production stood at 20 vehicles, but over the
years that followed the factory’s output was to grow rapidly. To
date, the plant has produced over 11.65 million cars bearing the
badges of 14 different brands. Some 500,000 people have worked here
over the years, the workforce peaking at 28,000 in the early 1960s.
Today, Plant Oxford employs 3,700 associates and builds up to 900
MINI cars every day. More than 2.25 million MINIs have rolled off
the assembly line since production began.

This historic occasion also elicited congratulations and best
wishes from arguably England’s most famous address: 10 Downing
Street. “The substantial contribution which the Oxford plant has
made to the British economy over the last 100 years is something all
involved should be proud of,” said Prime Minister David Cameron.
“MINI’s worldwide success has gone hand-in-hand with a rejuvenation
of the production facility. Indeed, the state-of-the-art production
equipment here provides an excellent example of how intelligent
investment and British manufacturing can come together to great effect.”

A helping hand from a British philanthropist.
It was the plant’s founder William Morris, later Lord
Nuffield, who got the ball rolling. Morris was one of the country’s
most respected philanthropists – in a sense, the Bill Gates of his
time. In total he gave away around £11 billion (€13 billion) in
today’s money. Other legacies of his work include three wings of the
University of Oxford that bear his assumed title and the iron lungs
he manufactured and subsequently donated to local hospitals.

These ventilators did not represent the factory’s only foray into
unfamiliar territory. Far from it: Tiger Moth aircraft, ambulances
and parachutes were all manufactured here at various times. However,
its main business was always automotive production, and a large
number of important models have rolled off the assembly line in
Oxford over the course of its history – cars such as the Morris
Minor, Morris Marina and Austin Maestro, as well as the classic
Mini, of course.

Today, the Oxford plant is home to the core of MINI production. The
MINI Hatchback, Convertible, Clubman, Clubvan, Roadster and Coupé
are all built here. Plus, major new investment is making its
presence felt, funding the installation of around 1,000 new robots
in a new bodyshop and other existing areas of the plant. This
accounts for the lion’s share of the £750 million investment
programme that came on stream last year with the aim of preparing
the production facility for the next generation of MINI models.

A significant contributor to the future of British industry.
The prospects for the future also formed a major part of the
address by Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin: “The automotive
sector has a key role to play in the government’s strategy of
creating growth and jobs through the export of products ‘Made in
Britain’ to markets around the world. And so, as well as offering us
a moment to indulge in a little nostalgia for the achievements of
the past, these celebrations also represent a great opportunity to
highlight the immense contribution of this production facility to
the future of British industry.”

His words reflect a commitment to extending a long and successful
tradition which has already earned the United Kingdom several
billions of pounds in export earnings. In the mid-1930s Morris
products made up almost 30 per cent of all British exports. And the
Oxford plant continues to generate impressive export figures to this
day, having shipped no fewer than 1.7 million MINI cars to over 100
countries since 2001.

Member of the Board of Management of BMW Harald Krüger added his
voice to the celebrations: “We have ambitious plans for growth and
are currently preparing for the launch of the next-generation MINI
family. The BMW Group will expand the MINI range from seven models
at present to 10 in 2014. Our sales expectations for the medium term
are considerably above MINI’s current level of 300,000 cars per year worldwide.”

Among the special guests attending the opening of the exhibition
was former employee Eric Lord, who celebrated his 93rd birthday the
same day. Eric joined the factory in 1940 at the age of 20 and
remained a loyal servant of the plant until his retirement in 1979.
He therefore made an active contribution to 20 years of MINI history
from the founding of the brand in 1959.

MINI Europe Tour recalls the continent’s industrial history.
The celebrations in Oxford followed the final chapter in
another automotive journey: the MINI Europe Tour. It was fitting
that Oxford – the home of the brand past and present – would be the
final destination of a transcontinental voyage that ran from 13 – 27
March. However, the Tour’s main goal was to bring back to mind the
cross-border nature of Mini production. Up to the early 1990s, the
classic Mini and its off-shoots were also assembled in other
locations from CKD (Completely Knocked Down) sets. The MINI Europe
Tour took in all eight of the brand’s former assembly facilities,
covering a total of 10,500 kilometres (over 6,500 miles) in the
process; the convoy stopped by in Novo Mesto (Slovenia), the Italian
city of Milan, the former production plant in Malta, the Portuguese
town of Vendas Novas, Pamplona in Spain, Seneffe in Belgium,
Amersfoort in Holland and the Irish capital Dublin. Only three of
these eight locations are still home to car production today. But
all of them count the Mini as an important part of their local
industrial history, one that roared back into the public
consciousness as the MINI Europe Tour rolled into town.

A classic Mini built at the Longbridge plant led the convoy on the
final leg of its journey from Longbridge to Oxford. Longbridge
produced the classic Mini up to 1999 and can itself look back on
decades of history, having produced its first cars back in 1905.

Press Contact: Andreas Lampka
Tel: +491754381050
E-mail: andreas.lampka@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Heritage,Locations,MINI
