Markus Flasch is soon to head the product lines Rolls-Royce, BMW luxury and upper class as well as the BMW midrange class.</pp:summary>

Munich. With effect from 1 November, Franciscus van
Meel will assume the position as chairman of the board of BMW M GmbH.
He succeeds Markus Flasch, who, after three years at the helm of the
BMW Group subsidiary responsible for particularly sporty automobiles,
will be changing to the Overall Vehicle Development division. Flasch
will assume the position within the BMW Group as head of the
production lines Rolls-Royce, BMW luxury and upper class, in future
also including the BMW midrange production line. During his term of
office in the executive board of BMW M GmbH, the company rose to
become the world’s leading provider of performance and high-performance-automobiles.

For Franciscus van Meel it is a return to the chief executive
position at the top of BMW M GmbH. Between 2015 and 2018, he had
already led the company, which bears the status of an independent
automobile manufacturer. In the meantime, van Meel has also been,
inter alia, responsible for the Rolls-Royce product line as well as
for the BMW luxury and upper class. Under his leadership, the BMW
Group’s new technology flagship, the BMW iX, was brought to
series-production readiness. Van Meel also headed development of the
forthcoming purely electrically powered model variants. With this
experience in hand, he brings along the ideal prerequisites to also
shape the next stages already commenced on the way to electrification
at the BMW M GmbH. The first highlight of van Meel’s second term of
office has already been fixed: 2022 will witness the celebrations
marking the 50th anniversary of the company - originally founded as
BMW Motorsport GmbH - during which many new high-performance
automobiles will be presented. These will also include the first BMW
M3 Touring, which is already in an advanced stage of its series
development process.

During the past three years, BMW M GmbH has been influenced by an
unparalleled model offensive. The list of innovations with which BMW M
GmbH was able to achieve new record sales figures and assume market
leadership ahead of competitors included the extended range of
performance automobiles and new versions of the model series BMW M3
and BMW M4, which represent the core of the BMW M brand, as well as
the absolute top-of-the-range models in their segment, the BMW M2 CS
and the BMW M5 CS. The latest new model, the purely
electrically-powered BMW M automobile, the BMW i4 M50, will be
available in South Africa in the first quarter of 2022.

At the same time, the BMW M company’s commitment as a car
manufacturer and in motorsport was recently again more closely
interlinked. This was accompanied by the realignment of motorsport
activities, new and particularly attractive customer sport offerings
and the decision on BMW’s comeback in international prototype racing,
which has been planned for 2023.

Press Contact: Hailey Philander
Tel: +27-71-666-2070
E-mail: hailey.philander@bmw.co.za

Press Release,M5,BMW i,M2,F87,F90,G26,i4,Product,BMW,BMW M

BMW M GmbH has made its BMW M5 (fuel consumption combined: 10.6 –
10.5 l/100 km [26.6 – 26.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions
combined: 242 – 239 g/km) and BMW M5 Competition (fuel consumption
combined: 10.6 – 10.5 l/100 km [26.6 – 26.9 mpg imp]; CO2
emissions combined: 242 – 239 g/km) high-performance sedans better
than ever with some stylistic fine-tuning and a skilfully honed
operating concept. The 4.4‑litre V8 engine with BMW M TwinPower
Turbo technology generates 441 kW/600 hp in the BMW M5 and 460
kW/625 hp in the BMW M5 Competition. The eight‑speed M Steptronic
transmission with Drivelogic comes as standard, as does M xDrive
all-wheel drive, which also includes a 2WD setting for pure
rear-wheel drive.

Featuring new shock absorbers from the BMW M8 Gran Coupé and
a retuned chassis, the BMW M5 Competition offers even better
driveability and handling at the limit, combined with superior
comfort levels. The BMW M5 Competition sits seven millimetres lower
than the BMW M5 and includes other well-conceived tweaks to the
suspension and springs. This setup makes allowance for the car’s
extra power and truly comes into its own on the race track.

The BMW M5 sprints from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in only 3.4 seconds
and passes 200 km/h (124 mph) with just 11.1 seconds on the clock.
The BMW M5 Competition reaches both marks a fraction more quickly:
100 km/h (62 mph) is up in 3.3 seconds, 200 km/h (124 mph) in 10.8 seconds.

As on the BMW 5 Series range, the updated BMW kidney grille drops
down further into the front apron; its chrome surround now has a
one-piece design framing both kidney elements, which sport
M‑specific double bars and an M badge.

The restyled front apron has bolder contouring and larger air
intakes at the sides, while the large central air intake is
hexagonal in shape and incorporates the oil cooler along with the
radar sensor for the Active Cruise Control (ACC) system.

New L‑shaped light tubes searing in narrow streaks towards the
kidney grille add a dynamic flourish to the newly designed LED
headlights. The new option of BMW Individual lights Shadowline adds
a dark-tinted accent to the Adaptive LED Headlights and BMW Laserlight.

The LED rear lights now have a three-dimensional feel to them and
provide a fresh take on the familiar BMW L shape with their precise
light graphic.

The larger central display with a diagonal of 12.3 inches makes
it easier than ever to keep a clear eye on the myriad functions of
the driving dynamics systems and BMW M xDrive.

The new two-button operating concept in the centre console
originates from the BMW M8. The M Mode button lets the driver toggle
swiftly between the ROAD and SPORT settings. The Setup button takes
them straight to the central display’s menu, where they can select
an individual configuration for the powertrain and chassis options.
The BMW M5 Competition also offers TRACK mode, for an undiluted M
feeling on race circuits.

The standard M Compound brakes can now be specified with callipers
painted in High-gloss Black or High-gloss Red as an alternative to
the existing blue finish.

Only the BMW M5 Competition will be made available in South
Africa, due to retail in Q4 of 2020.

The new BMW M5 Competition high-performance sedan (fuel consumption
combined: 10.8 - 10.7 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 246
– 243 g/km)* brings together exceptional performance and a suitably
rarefied aura with the unruffled ease in everyday use for which BMW M
models are renowned. A 19 kW hike in engine output over the standard
version of the new BMW M5 (to 460 kW), even more direct responses and
bespoke chassis tuning ensure a race-inspired driving experience at
all times.

The market launch of the new BMW M5 Competition heralds the creation
of a new product category. In future, BMW M GmbH will offer the most
powerful variants of its high-performance cars as standalone models.

The engine: more power and a distinctive brand of performance.

The performance-driving experience that defines the character of the
new BMW M5 Competition has a deep emotional richness – and is rooted
in the distinctive way its engine goes about its business. The
4.4-litre V8 unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology now produces
maximum output of 460 kW at 6,000 rpm. Peak torque is 750 Newton
metres and can be enjoyed across an extremely wide rev range – from
1,800 to 5,800 rpm (i.e. a 200-rpm wider band than in the standard
version of the new BMW M5).

The high-revving instincts of the eight-cylinder engine are therefore
harnessed to give the new BMW M5 Competition imposing levels of
thrust. The car’s unique power delivery makes its presence felt in
reducing the Competition’s 0 to 100 km/h time to 3.3 seconds.
Furthermore,
0 – 200 km/h is over in 10.8 seconds – 0.3 seconds
quicker than in the standard version of the new M5.

Standard specification for the new BMW M5 Competition includes a
model-specific M Sport exhaust system with tailpipe embellishers in
black chrome. This version of the twin-pipe, flap-controlled exhaust
generates a strikingly prominent soundtrack. Meanwhile, the addition
of a particulate filter to the Competition’s armoury enables a further
reduction in emissions.

Specially designed engine mounts optimise responsiveness and
cornering characteristics.

The new BMW M5 Competition features model-specific engine mounting,
which also has a noticeable impact on its performance abilities. The
engine mounts have modified characteristics and an increased spring
rate, and the drive unit’s firmer connection to the vehicle’s
structure results in even more direct engine response and immediate
transmission of its power to the drivetrain. The car also turns into
corners with noticeably greater directness and precision on account of
the mounting’s stiffer characteristics.

Eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive.

The task of relaying the new BMW M5 Competition’s engine power is
again handled by the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. Three
different modes offering a choice of efficient, sporty or
ultra-dynamic driving can be activated using the Drivelogic rocker
switch on the gear selector.

Having made its debut in the standard version of the new BMW M5, the
M xDrive all-wheel-drive system now also feeds the further increased
power of the BMW M5 Competition onto the road with poise, assurance
and thrilling alacrity. It generates just enough extra traction to
achieve acceleration times worthy of a super-sports car. The centrally
controlled interaction between M xDrive and the Active M Differential
is largely responsible for channelling the engine’s remarkable output
to the car’s wheels without any loss of power en route. The
rear-biased setup of the M xDrive system is another contributory
factor in the tremendous agility of the high-performance sedan. Plus,
a rear-wheel-drive-only setting (2WD) allows experienced and skilled
drivers to revel in the experience offered by past generations of the
BMW M5 – i.e. handling in its purest form, with no control systems
holding the car back.

Individually tuned chassis for the ultimate in precision and performance.

Like every BMW M car, the new BMW M5 Competition is equipped with
chassis technology matched perfectly to the performance
characteristics of its engine. The associated modifications ensure
precisely controllable handling at all times, even in extremely
dynamic driving situations. As well as lowering the vehicle by
seven millimetres, the model-specific chassis tuning also includes
judicious tweaks to the wheel suspension, springs and dampers.

The increased camber at the front axle enhances the car’s ability to
absorb lateral forces through high-speed corners. Fitting the toe
links with ball joints instead of rubber mounts has resulted in even
more precise wheel guidance at the rear axle. And the rear anti-roll
bar also has a firmer spring rate. The front axle of the new BMW M5
Competition is equipped with a newly designed mounting for the
anti-roll bar. Making the springs at the front and rear axles ten per
cent stiffer than on the standard version of the new BMW M5 has
produced a firmer ride, which also has a positive impact on steering
response. Plus, shorter auxiliary springs reduce fluctuation in wheel
loads, as does the unique tuning of the damper hydraulics.
Consequently, the direct connection with the chassis can also be
clearly felt in Comfort mode. Selecting Sport mode activates the
damper settings perfected for testing on the Nürburgring’s
Nordschleife circuit, while Sport Plus lends itself to ultra-dynamic
driving on grand prix tracks.

Standard specification for the new BMW M5 Competition includes
exclusive M light-alloy wheels sporting a Y-spoke design in a
bi-colour finish. The 20-inch forged wheels are shod with mixed-size
tyres measuring 275/35 R 20 at the front and 285/35 R 20 at the rear.

Exclusive and highly expressive design features.

The exclusive feel of the new BMW M5 Competition is further enhanced
by a selection of other model-specific design features. BMW Individual
high-gloss Shadow Line trim is complemented by the use of discreetly
sporty high-gloss black for the kidney grille surround, the decorative
mesh of the signature BMW M gills in the front side panels, the trim
for the rear bumper covering and the exterior mirror caps. Another
special feature are the door openers, which are painted fully in the
body colour. The rear spoiler and “M5” boot lid badge – which gains
“Competition” lettering – also come in high-gloss black.

Inside the car, an understated stripe design in BMW M GmbH colours
for the seat belts, plus floor mats with special piping and “M5” logo,
point to the exclusive character of the new BMW M5 Competition. A
further identifying feature is the “M Competition” graphic that
appears in the instrument cluster to greet the driver when it is
starting up.

The new BMW M5 Competition will be available in South Africa in the
third quarter of this year.Pricing will be communicated in due course.

Munich. The BMW M5 (combined fuel consumption: 10.5
l/100km*; combined CO2 emissions: 241 g/100km*) has been
voted "World Performance Car 2018", making this the seventh
time BMW has received a World Car Award from the organisation
"World Car of the Year". The award ceremony was held on 28
March 2018 at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

There were a total of eleven vehicles in this category –
performance-oriented cars of which at least 2,000 units are produced
per year and which are available for purchase on at least two
continents from 1 January 2017 until 31 May 2018. Selection and voting
in all categories was carried out by an international jury made up of
82 leading automobile journalists from 24 countries.

The BMW M5 is fitted with the latest version of the 4.4-litre V8
engine with M Twin Power Turbo Technology. An output of 441kW and a
maximum torque of 750Nm guarantee supreme propulsion and phenomenal
driving performance: the V8 biturbo engine accelerates the M5 from 0
to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. The new M5 features the M specific
all-wheel drive system M xDrive. Power transmission is taken care of
by the new 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic: in
conjunction with M xDrive, this ensures the power of the high-revving
turbocharged engine is transferred to the road in perfect fashion.

The new BMW M5 has just become available in South Africa. For more

CO2 emissions combined: 241 g/km*) takes driving dynamics
into a new dimension. Making its local debut at BMW dealerships
nationwide from Thursday, 29 March 2018, the all-new sixth generation
BMW M5 sees the introduction of the new M-specific all-wheel-drive
system M xDrive. Not only does this drive system enable the M5 to
reach new heights of dynamic performance, it means that it excels in
terms of everyday practicality and delivers supreme poise in all
driving conditions as well.

Frank van Meel, Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW M GmbH,
explains the benefits of the pioneering drivetrain technology aboard
the new BMW M5: “Thanks to M xDrive, the new BMW M5 can be piloted
with the familiar blend of sportiness and unerring accuracy both on
the race track and out on the open road, while also delighting drivers
with its significantly enhanced directional stability and
controllability right up to the limits of performance when driving in
adverse conditions such as in the wet or snow.”

The car’s ability to juggle complete suitability for everyday use on
the one hand and sheer driving pleasure and superb track performance
on the other is down to the M xDrive system’s central intelligent
control capability. When the engine is first started, the new BMW M5
will be in all-wheel-drive mode (4WD) with Dynamic Stability Control
(DSC) switched on. The driver is then able to vary the handling
characteristics of the M5 by activating various driving dynamics
modes, including a rear-wheel-drive mode with no DSC. In this 2WD
mode, the new BMW M5 allows accomplished drivers to enjoy a pure-bred
form of driving pleasure.

Hard at work under the bonnet of the new BMW M5 is the latest and
most advanced version of the 4.4-litre V8 engine featuring
M TwinPower Turbo technology. Output of 441 kW and peak torque of 750
Nm promise supreme propulsive power and formidable performance. The
twin-turbo V8 unit propels the new M5 from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere
3.4 seconds, for instance. The task of relaying the drive power falls
to the new eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic,
which teams up with the M xDrive system to transfer the high-revving
engine’s turbocharged might to the road to optimum effect in all
driving conditions. The upshot of all this is that the new BMW M5 is
not just the fastest of all the M5 models built since 1984, but the
most nimble too.

Munich. A special MotoGP season gets underway for BMW
M GmbH at the “Losail International Circuit” in Qatar this weekend
(16th to 18th March): it is BMW M’s
20th season as “Official Car of MotoGP”. BMW and BMW M GmbH
have been involved as partners of MotoGP organiser Dorna Sports since
1999. Activities are focussed on providing the safety car fleet. In
the 2018 anniversary season, the fleet will be headed by the new BMW
M5 MotoGP Safety Car. BMW M GmbH will provide a total of seven BMW M
high-performance cars this year to ensure the safety of the race events.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dorna Sports for the
faith they have shown in us for what is now two decades. Rarely do you
come across such a long and successful partnership in sport, and we
are proud of this special anniversary,” said Frank van Meel, President
of BMW M GmbH. “When we partnered with MotoGP organiser Dorna Sports
in 1999, our aspiration was to use all our expertise, innovative
technology from motorsport and new ideas to serve safety in the
MotoGP. That remains the case today. 20 years down the road, Dorna
Sports still has a strong partner on board, in BMW M GmbH, for whom
the safety of the riders takes top priority.”

The fleet of safety and official cars has always consisted of the
latest BMW M models, optimised for use on the racetrack. Celebrating
the 20th anniversary, BMW M GmbH remains true with this
philosophy and sets a real highlight with the new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car.

The new course car is based on the high-performance sedan BMW M5
(combined consumption: 10.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions:
241 g/km)*, which was showcased to the global public for the first
time in August 2017. The BMW M5’s technical features ensure perfect
handling, even at the limits of driving dynamics. These features
include the newly-developed M-specific all-wheel drive M xDrive, which
is being used in the BMW M5 for the first time. The 4.4-litre V8
engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology represents another
significant increase in performance compared to previous models, with
441 kW/600 HP and maximum torque of 750 Nm in the production M5.
Painstaking manual work at the BMW M Manufaktur in Garching converted
the high-performance base car into the BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car,
preparing it to appear as the course car in MotoGP.

In the 2018 season, the fleet of official MotoGP vehicles includes a
total of seven different BMW M high-performance cars. Alongside the
new BMW M5 MotoGP Safety Car the BMW M3 Safety Car will also be in
action. BMW M GmbH will provide the Safety Officer and the Race
Director with a BMW M4 Coupé Safety Car with water injection and a BMW
M2 Safety Car. In addition, the BMW X5 M Medical Car will take to the
track this season and a BMW M6 Gran Coupé Safety Car also stands ready
to be in action. Two BMW S 1000 RR, which BMW Motorrad provides as
safety bikes, complete the 2018 safety car fleet.

Among the many other activities that make up BMW M GmbH’s commitment
to MotoGP is the BMW M Award, which will be presented for the
16th time in 2018. This award is presented at the end of
each MotoGP season to the rider with the best overall result in qualifying.

The winner receives an exclusive BMW M car. The BMW M MotoGP
Experience sees guests of BMW M GmbH experience an unforgettable race
weekend. They are given an exclusive glimpse behind the scenes by BMW
M MotoGP experts Loris Capirossi and Alex Hofmann. Furthermore, BMW M
GmbH presents its latest models and products with on-site campaigns on
selected Grand Prix weekends.

Munich. Millions of gamers worldwide can look forward
to an exciting new addition to “Need
for SpeedTM No Limits”. The new BMW M5 (fuel
consumption combined: 10.5 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 241 g/km)
is now available for the highly successful smartphone racing game. The
high-performance sedan is an exclusive feature of the latest “Xtreme
Racing Championship”; until 9 February, players can register for the
championship. After registration, they have seven days to drive the
BMW M5 in a series of competitive races to test their skills. Winners
will be able to permanently unlock the model.

“Need for SpeedTM No Limits” is the first adaptation of
the extremely popular racing game series “Need for SpeedTM”
for mobile devices. In the two-and-a-half years since its market
launch, it has become one of the most popular smartphone racing games
in the world, with several million downloads and a very active
community. The game offers a wide range of unlockable vehicles that
can be customised to individual preferences and then tested against
other players around the world in different racing modes. More than 11
billion races have already been completed.

BMW is already part of the game, with the BMW M3 Coupé (1999), the
BMW M4 Coupé (2014) and the BMW M2 Coupé (2015). The new BMW M5 Sedan
will now join this trio. It will be integrated into the game’s app
icon and also features in the game trailer. With the BMW M5, BMW has
the fastest model in the Sports category. By this, gaming enthusiast
around the globe can experience the new Sports Sedan even before its
market launch in March 2018.

Electronic Arts and the BMW M5 already share a history. The sedan
celebrated its world
premiere last year – not, as is customary, at a motor show, but at
Europe’s biggest trade show for interactive games and entertainment,
GamesCom in Cologne. Why? Even before the BMW M5 was available in
showrooms, gamers were already able to experience it in the action
racing game “Need for SpeedTM Payback” that had just been
released at GamesCom 2017. In the meantime, gamers worldwide had
already clocked up around 480,000 hours – equivalent to about 55 years
– in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan on the virtual racetracks of “Need for
SpeedTM Payback”.

The BMW M5 continues the long history of BMW models in the successful
“Need for SpeedTM” racing game series. The first BMW
featured in “Need for SpeedTM” back in 1997; the first BMW
M5 in 1999. These were followed by the BMW M3 in “Need for
SpeedTM Most Wanted” in 2005, the BMW M3 GTR in “Need for
SpeedTM Shift” in 2009 and many other appearances,
including the BMW M4, M6 and Z4 M. Just three years ago, in 2015, the
new BMW M2 made its big debut in the newest instalment of “Need for
SpeedTM” at that time.

New BMW M5 sets GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS for the longest
drift in eight hours and the longest twin-vehicle drift.

BMW instructor Johan Schwartz completed a sustained drift
of 232.5 miles (374.2 kilometres).

Schwartz and BMW Performance Center Chief Driving
Instructor Matt Mullins performed a twin vehicle drift over a
distance of 49.25 miles (79.3 kilometres) in one hour.

Custom refuelling system developed to allow mid-drift
refuelling during world record attempt.

The new BMW M5 (combined fuel consumption: 10.5 l/100 km*; combined
CO2 emissions: 241 g/km*) is in record fever: on 11 December 2017,
instructor Johan Schwartz performed a sustained drift at the BMW
Performance Center in Greer, South Carolina, in the new BMW M5,
covering exactly 232.5 miles (374.2 kilometres) on a so-called skid
pad, thereby setting a new GUINESS WORLD RECORD for the longest drift
in eight hours. Schwartz shattered the previous record by 143 miles
(230.1 kilometres).

A custom-built refuelling system developed by BMW in collaboration
with the North Carolina-based company Detroit Speed made it possible
to drift continuously without a break for the full eight hours as
required by the GUINESS WORLD RECORDS. This enabled the BMW M5 to be
refuelled during the drift in the same way that fighter jets can
refuel in mid-flight – though in this case the operation was performed
by hand: a second BMW M5 driven by the Chief Driving Instructor of the
BMW Performance Center, Matt Mullins, accompanied the record-breaking
M5. Mullins adapted to Schwartz's drifting speed, allowing Matt Butts
of Detroit Speed to carrying out the refuelling operation, secured by
a safety tether that permitted him to straddle the space between the
two moving vehicles by leaning out of the rear window of the second car.

“Although we practised the refuelling several times before the
GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title attempt, there was very little margin for
error,” said Butts. “We’re very excited to have played a part in Johan
and BMW recapturing this record.”

A second GUINESS WORLD RECORD was awarded for the longest twin
vehicle water-assisted drift: Schwartz and Mullins drifted together
for one hour, covering a total of 49.25 miles (79.3 kilometres).

emissions combined: 241 g/km*) takes BMW M GmbH into new territory,
with M xDrive all-wheel drive featuring in the high-performance sedan
for the first time. This change of tack sees the M5 exploring new
dynamic dimensions and offering greater everyday practicality in all
driving conditions. The new car is committed to building on the
tradition of a concept – the luxurious four-door business sedan with a
taste for the race track – first glimpsed in 1984 with the original BMW M5.

The new M xDrive developed by BMW M GmbH is the most emotionally
engaging all-wheel-drive system yet to grace the high-performance
segment. It works with a central transfer case with multi-plate clutch
and distributes drive fully variably between the front and rear axle,
as required. Another ingredient in the car’s supreme traction in all
road and weather conditions is the Active M Differential at the rear
axle, which also works fully variably and has a locking effect between
0 and 100 per cent.

The character of M xDrive can be adjusted as desired. The driver has
five different configurations to choose from based on combinations of
the DSC modes (DSC on, MDM, DSC off) and M xDrive modes (4WD, 4WD
Sport, 2WD). In the basic setting with DSC (Dynamic Stability Control)
activated and 4WD, the system permits slight slip through the rear
wheels when accelerating out of corners – and therefore plays its part
in giving the new BMW M5 its sporting agility. In M Dynamic mode (MDM,
4WD Sport) M xDrive allows easily controlled drifts. The three
M xDrive modes with DSC switched off have been conceived to sate the
appetites of keen drivers and primarily for use on the track. Here,
the driver can choose from three configurations up to and including
pure rear-wheel drive (2WD). This mode allows the driver to pick their
own drift angle and treats connoisseurs to driving dynamics in their
purest form.

Providing ample power for the new BMW M5 is a 4.4-litre V8 bi-turbo
engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. The M engineers have carried
out significant revisions to the outgoing model’s power unit. For
example, newly developed turbochargers, ultra-efficient indirect
charge air cooling and increased fuel injection pressure together help
to raise output and, above all, torque. The engine develops 441 kW at
5,600 – 6,700 rpm, while a monumental 750 Nm of torque is placed at
the driver’s disposal from as low down as 1,800 rpm and remains there
until 5,600 rpm. A map-controlled, fully variable oil pump ensures oil
is supplied as and when the new BMW M5 needs it, even on the track.
The car’s impressive performance figures speak for themselves: 0 to
100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in 11.1 seconds. Top
speed, meanwhile, is an electronically limited 250 km/h, but the
optional M Driver’s Package can keep the fun coming to 305 km/h.

The new BMW M5 channels all that power through a specially tuned
eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. In D mode it
provides all the comfort and convenience of fully automatic gear
changes, but can then also switch to sequential manual shifts. The
driver can do this using either the compact selector lever on the
centre console or the steering wheel-mounted paddles. Drivelogic
allows the driver to adjust the transmission’s characteristics to
their personal preferences. For track use, the
eight-speed M Steptronic unit serves up lightning-fast shift times,
helping to give the new BMW M5 its exceptional agility and dynamic flair.

The suspension of the new BMW M5 is likewise designed to deliver both
maximum traction for everyday use and supreme dynamic performance on
the track. Like the engine, transmission and M xDrive system, it has
been tuned by experts and racing drivers at venues including the
world’s most exacting test facility – the Nürburgring Nordschleife
circuit. Sophisticated stiffening elements in the front and rear
structures ensure the body structure is extremely rigid and therefore
that the car provides instantaneous feedback, in particular when the
driver is pushing hard on the road or track.

The driver can also choose from Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus modes
for the Variable Damper Control (VDC) system – which has M-specific
tuning – and the M Servotronic steering. And the engine’s
characteristics can also be configured to the driver’s tastes via the
Efficient, Sport and Sport Plus modes. The two M1 and M2 buttons on
the M leather steering wheel can be used to store two set-ups
combining the driver’s preference of engine, transmission, suspension
and M xDrive modes, the DSC mode and Head-Up-Display settings. The
driver can then activate their preferred set-up by pressing the
relevant button.

The new BMW M5 includes revisions to its bodywork over the regular
BMW 5 Series to satisfy its challenging dynamic brief. The M engineers
have redesigned the broader front side panels and front bumper trim to
include larger apertures for the air feeding the cooling systems and
brakes. Also new is the rear diffuser. The exhaust system’s quartet of
tailpipes are a visual pointer to the power generated by the BMW M5
and also lay on a suitably sporting soundtrack for the job in hand,
courtesy of their flap control system. The driver can use a button to
adjust the engine sound as desired.

The bonnet, which also has an M-specific design, is made from
aluminium and boasts eye-catching sculpture lines. These extend into
the extremely lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) roof
– a standard feature of the new M5. The weight savings contributed by
the CFRP roof and other components such as the exhaust system help to
ensure the new BMW M5 with M xDrive all-wheel drive is lighter than
its predecessor.

The new BMW M5 is fitted as standard with M compound brakes, which
are lighter than conventional grey cast iron items and therefore also
bring down the car’s weight. With blue-painted six-piston fixed
callipers at the front and single-piston floating callipers at the
rear, plus perforated, inner-vented brake discs all round, the M
compound brakes have the speed-shedding power to befit the car’s
dynamic potency. The optional M carbon ceramic brakes, which can be
identified by callipers painted in a gold colour and shave another
23 kilograms off the M5’s weight, can withstand even greater punishment.

The new BMW M5 comes as standard with polished 19-inch light-alloy
wheels (front: 9.5 x 19, rear: 10.5 x 19) in Orbit Grey and M-specific
tyres (front: 275/40 R 19, rear: 285/40 R 19). 20-inch items can be
specified as an option (front: 275/35 R 20 tyres on 9.5 x 20 rims,
rear: 285/35 R 20 tyres on 10.5 x 20 rims). Standard specification for
the new BMW M5 also features Merino leather and M seats with electric
adjustment. The options list includes newly developed M multifunction
seats, which stand out with their bucket-seat-style construction and
even better lateral support.

The new BMW M5 can be ordered from September 2017, priced at
€117,900, and deliveries will begin in spring 2018. In South Africa,
the new BMW M5 will be available in the first quarter of 2018. Local
pricing and specifications will be available before the end of 2017.

Scheduled for launch on the same sales start date as the standard M5
is the BMW M5 First Edition. This special-edition version – limited to
a run of 400 examples worldwide – has BMW Individual Frozen Dark Red
Metallic paintwork, is exclusively appointed and costs an extra
€19,500 over the standard model. The BMW M5 First Editon will also be
available in South Africa in very limited numbers.

Cologne. Today, Electronic Arts and the BMW Group
debuted the all-new BMW M5 (fuel consumption combined: 10.5 l/100 km
[26.9 mpg imp]*; CO2 emissions combined: 241 g/km*) in Need for
SpeedTM Payback, the action driving blockbuster releasing
this fall. This marks first time BMW has revealed a car through a
videogame partnership, unveiling the new BMW M5 at gamescom, Europe’s
biggest trade fair for interactive games and entertainment. The new
BMW M5 builds on the traditional concept of a luxurious four-door
business sedan by appealing to drivers with a taste for high speed and
adrenaline. Need for SpeedTM Payback players will be among
the first to experience the new M xDrive all-wheel drive as they tear
through the city streets and diverse landscape of Fortune Valley this fall.

Trailer: https://youtu.be/PAlqelMXJ6U (Release
21 August 2017, 7.30 p.m.)

“The new BMW M5 is a stunning car,” said Marcus Nilsson, Executive
Producer at Ghost Games. “With immense horsepower and torque combined
with gorgeous design, our players are going to love getting behind the
wheel of the new M5. Whether it’s pulling off intense heist missions,
or outrunning cops in epic pursuits or just cruising the open world,
this car embodies performance, speed and desire, making it one of the
pinnacle rides in Need for SpeedTM Payback.”

The M5 takes the BMW M-series into new territory, with 441 kW, peak
torque of 750 Nm and 10.5 l/100 km fuel consumption combined/ 241 g/km
CO2 emissions combined, which promise supreme propulsive power and
formidable performance. The new M xDrive developed by BMW M GmbH is
the most engaging all-wheel-drive system yet to grace the
high-performance segment and will be on display across various
terrains in Need for SpeedTM Payback.

“The M is not only synonymous for the world’s most powerful letter,
but has also become a synonym worldwide for the prototype of the
Ultimate Driving Machine. Take a look at the new BMW M5: its power
output, torque and acceleration, the M specific all-wheel drive system
M xDrive and its stunning design make our all-new toy the perfect
feature for Need for Speed,” said Frank van Meel, President BMW M
Division. “While the M5 won’t be officially released until next
spring, Need for Speed players can drive it first and exclusively in
Need for SpeedTM Payback. We at BMW M are really proud of
this collaboration.”

“Young, enthusiastic and 100% devoted to their passion: This is not
only true for BMW M fans but also for millions of gamers around the
globe, who love Need for SpeedTM. BMW is joy and excitement
for cars, whether it is in real life or digital,” said Hildegard
Wortmann, Senior Vice President Brand BMW. “With this cooperation BMW
can reach out to a new audience that is truly digital. This is a
perfect example for a fruitful cooperation in modern marketing with
benefits for everyone and a new milestone after the BMW M2’s debut in
2015’s Need for SpeedTM.”

BMW and Need for SpeedTM share a long tradition together.
Already in 1999 the BMW M5 was part of the first Need for
SpeedTM. BMW was part of the history of Need for
SpeedTM ever since: Whether it was the BMW M3 in 2005’s
Need for SpeedTM Most Wanted, the BMW M3 GTR in Need for
SpeedTM Shift in 2009, and many other appearances of BMW
M4, M6 and many alike. Just recently the new BMW M2 entered the stage
in 2015’s Need for SpeedTM.

Need for SpeedTM is one of the world’s bestselling video
game franchises.
