BMW enters an exciting new era of driving pleasure with its second Neue Klasse model, the new BMW i3. Since its unveiling in March, the trailblazing all-electric saloon has already generated strong customer demand and, from today, customers have an early opportunity to place an order with the new BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition (WLTP, combined [EnVKV]: energy consumption 16.1–13.5 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions: 0 g/mile; CO₂ class A) and offers a range of 758 – 906 km).

Building on the BMW i3 50 xDrive’s comprehensive standard specification, the First Edition adds further standard-fit equipment. Based on the M Sport model, it includes M Sport exterior and interior design elements alongside features such as BMW Iconic Glow, the BMW 3D Head-Up Display and AC Charging Professional – increasing the AC charging rate from 11 kW to 22 kW. The BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition is available to order from BMW retailers now, priced from €72,855 OTR.

At its official market launch in autumn 2026, the BMW i3 50 xDrive (WLTP, combined [EnVKV]: energy consumption 16.1 – 13.4 kWh/100 km; CO₂ emissions: 0 g/mile; CO₂ class A) will be priced from €66,685 OTR, offering a single-charge range of up to 912 km¹ (WLTP).

The BMW i3 exemplifies the new BMW design language: focused on the essentials in a modern, unmistakable style.

With its 2.5-box design, the new BMW i3 offers a modern take on hallmark BMW saloon proportions and is immediately recognisable as a BMW 3 Series. Its silhouette is characterised by a long wheelbase, glasshouse set well back and short overhangs. The BMW-typical four-eyed face receives a modern interpretation, while the Neue Klasse design language guides a fresh front end. The BMW kidney grille and twin headlights merge as an innovative light signature into a single stylistic piece. The horizontal rear lights feature an L-shaped design in a new, abstract form which extends far into the shoulder area. Prominently flared wheel arches amplify the model’s broad, sporty stance.

Taking BMW’s hallmark driver focus to a new level.

Inside, the new BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X offers a unique display and operating system optimised around the driver. At its heart is the BMW Panoramic Vision, which projects content across the entire width of the lower area of the windscreen. The multimodal operating logic of BMW Panoramic iDrive combines touch, haptic and voice-based interactions. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant plays a key role, enabling numerous vehicle functions, as well as navigation and media content, to be controlled using natural language. The introduction of large language model technology (LLM, Alexa+) results in a dialogue-based verbal interaction, enabling intuitive and intelligent exchanges.

BMW i3 takes a technological leap forward with sixth-generation electric drive system.

The BMW i3 50 xDrive is powered by two electric motors, one on each axel, resulting in a combined system output of 469 hp, a peak torque of 645 Nm and 0 to 100 kph acceleration in 4.7 seconds. The First Edition features identical motors and performance figures.

In the new BMW i3, highly efficient sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology teams with the Heart of Joy control computer and BMW Dynamic Performance Control software stack to provide precise, effortless and assured driving characteristics. The Heart of Joy responds ten times faster than previous systems and reduces the number of control interventions necessary. Meanwhile, the Soft Stop function ensures the smoothest stopping action in the history of BMW, bringing the vehicle to a complete stop without any jerking or braking noises through precise control of the electric motors. The result is a whole new level of Sheer Driving Pleasure.

The assisted driving experience also enters a new dimension in the BMW i3 with BMW Symbiotic Drive, enabling a seamless interaction between assistance functions and the driver. With driver assistance activated, drivers can respond to situations in their own style by accelerating, steering or braking without deactivating the active assistance system. The optional Motorway Assistant enables hands-free assisted driving on the motorway at speeds of up to 130 kph (or the national speed limit) with automated lane changes after confirmation by eye signal². Clear operating logic and displays ensure that assisted driving in the BMW i3 is always intuitive and controllable, enabling safe use of the highest SAE Level 2 automation.

Long range, shorter charging times and bidirectional charging.

The BMW i3 50 xDrive is powered by a high-voltage battery with new cylindrical cells and a net capacity of 108.7 kWh. The pack-to-open-body design of the battery housing turns it into a structural component of the new BMW i3. 800V technology significantly reduces charging times, enabling up to 423 km of range to be added in just 10 minutes when connected to a 400 kW DC rapid charger. Bidirectional charging is also supported. In First Edition specification, the BMW i3 50 xDrive offers a range of up to 906 km¹ (WLTP).

The First Edition brings additional standard features inside the cabin.

The interior of the BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition includes additional interior features, such as electrically adjustable front multifunction seats, three-zone automatic climate control, sun protection glazing and steering wheel heating.

The BMW 3D Head-Up Display is also standard fit. It is integrated above the BMW Panoramic Vision and projects selected content exclusively into the driver’s line of sight to enable precise spatial perception – especially useful when following navigation instructions. Further standard features include the Harman Kardon surround sound system, automatic tailgate operation and AC charging Professional – increasing the AC charging rate from 11 to 22 kW.

Optional equipment available for the BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition.

Customers can add further personal touches to the BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition via the options list, where rear seat heating, a panoramic glass sunroof with climate comfort glazing, and an electrically operated tow bar can be added. BMW Digital Premium can also be specified, bringing additional BMW Maps functionality, the Security Assistant and data for a wide range of entertainment. Additional driving and parking functions offered include Parking Assistant Plus, Parking Assistant Professional and the Motorway Assistant.

A wide range of exterior colours, alloy wheels, interior designs and steering wheels.
Six exterior paint finishes are available for the BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition, including M Le Castellet Blue. The alloy wheel portfolio comprises three aerodynamic options and a light-alloy variant with sizes of 19- and 20-inches available. Inside, customers can choose from Contemporary and BMW M themed interior designs in a variety of colours. A range of steering wheels offer further scope for customisation, including a white BMW Individual steering wheel (only in conjunction with the Contemporary interior design, Bicolour Digital White).

The new, seventh-generation BMW 7 Series represents the most extensive model update ever carried out by the BMW Group, as the brand’s flagship saloon spearheads the integration of Neue Klasse technologies into the existing BMW model portfolio.

With the new BMW 7 Series, BMW launches its Neue Klasse design language for the luxury segment. It features a monolithic exterior with precise lines, a new face with a reprofiled kidney grille and ultra-slim daytime running lights, as well as a sculpted rear, where redesigned taillights span the entire width of the vehicle. With BMW Individual, customers benefit from a broad spectrum of personalisation options, including new crystal headlights and a world-first dual-finish exterior paint. An expanded collection of BMW Individual paint choices – with over 500 colour combinations available for selection – comprehensive trim levels and a variety of alloy wheel designs in sizes up to 22 inches enable further customisation.

An exclusive experience is curated inside the cabin by merging a minimalist and contemporary design, luxury materials – such as leather, metal and crystal glass – and advanced Neue Klasse technologies. Interior highlights include the integration of BMW Panoramic iDrive with the first-ever BMW Passenger Screen – fitted as standard – an enhanced BMW Theatre Screen experience with the addition of Dolby Atmos audio and, for the first time, integrated video conferencing. With the new BMW 7 Series, sheer driving pleasure meets the pleasure of being driven, blending benchmark driving dynamics with the comfort levels expected from a luxury chauffeur-driven saloon. A highlight is its innovative chassis technology, including standard adaptive two-axle air suspension featuring four electronically controlled shock absorbers. Standard-fit Adaptive Chassis Control with Integral Active Steering delivers exceptional handling, while the optional Adaptive Chassis Control Professional package adds additional roll stabilisation, further raising the bar in terms of comfort and agility. The addition of cutting-edge functions such as AI-assisted digital tyre conditioning monitoring, the integrated braking system and near-actuator wheel slip limitation ensure exceptional handling and safety.

Through harnessing the power of Gen6 cylindrical cells, the new BMW i7 lineup offers significant improvements in all-electric range. Three derivatives of the BMW i7 will launch first in Ireland: the BMW i7 50 xDrive, delivering up to 727 km (WLTP) on a single charge; the BMW i7 60 xDrive and the flagship BMW i7 M70 xDrive, which produces a combined system power output of 680 hp, enabling ultra-fast acceleration – with 0-100 kph achievable in just 3.8 seconds. Two plug-in hybrid models will follow in November 2026: the BMW 750e xDrive and a second BMW M Performance model, the BMW M760e xDrive – also delivering outstanding levels of performance.

With the new BMW 7 Series, the BMW Group extends its sustainability strategy across all drive-system variants, focussing on resource-efficient product development, innovative technologies and measures applied throughout the car’s lifecycle – from the supply chain to production and throughout ownership. In the case of the BMW i7, CO₂e emissions have been significantly reduced with the help of secondary materials, renewable energies and optimised manufacturing processes, including the adoption of Gen6 battery cells and alloy wheels containing around 70 per cent recycled aluminium.

Exterior design.

With the Neue Klasse, BMW Group introduces a fresh, distinctive front-end design, ensuring a strong brand identity and high recognition across all models. The new BMW 7 Series showcases this design direction for the luxury segment, merging the model’s hallmark qualities – dynamism, comfort and luxury – with the Neue Klasse principles. Its exclusive front-end styling distinguishes it within BMW’s luxury model portfolio.

At the forefront is the updated illuminated BMW kidney grille with Iconic Glow as standard, now featuring slimmer, more vertical proportions. This is complemented by new two-section headlights and the newly designed BMW roundel in a matt finish, set between pronounced character lines on the bonnet. Large, body-coloured surfaces frame these elements, amplifying their visual impact and culminating in a powerful, monolithic appearance.

The kidney grille integrates technical features such as radar, camera, sensors, and washer nozzles discreetly, keeping the design clean and expansive. Contour lighting is now standard across the interior and exterior, initiating a distinctive light signature when the vehicle is started – a unique feature within its segment.

Headlights have been redesigned with a sophisticated, technical character. The upper, extremely slim light elements house the daytime running lights, sidelights, and indicators. BMW Individual crystal headlights can be specified with 12 crystal glass elements per unit, creating an exclusive, sparkling effect, especially when illuminated or in sunlight. Start-up animations and night-time driving further enhance this effect by backlighting the crystals alongside the kidney grille’s contour lighting.

Low and high-beam lights are positioned in the lower, vertically arranged section of the headlight unit, almost hidden near the air curtains at the outer edges. These only become visible when activated, further contributing to the front’s minimalist appearance. Adaptive LED Headlights – with cornering, matrix high beam up to 600 metres, and non-dazzling BMW Selective Beam assistant – are standard on the new 7 Series.

Special welcome and goodbye animations and dynamic light carpet.
A choreographed combination of light effects and projections creates a unique welcome sequence, with customisable animation modes – RELAXED, BALANCED, and EXCITED – and a similarly orchestrated goodbye as standard. The Ceremonial Light Carpet, available as an option, uses over 194,000 LED pixels embedded in the door sills to project dynamic light patterns near the doors, varying according to the animation mode, and further enhancing the entry and exit experience.

Side view: refined surfaces and high-quality details.
The side profile of the new BMW 7 Series is defined by flush-fitting door handles in classic recesses. Depending on the vehicle’s specification, handle trims are finished in Pearl-effect Chrome or Black high-gloss. When both doors on one side are open, a prominent ‘7’ is embossed on the B-pillar, reinforcing the model’s identity.

Rear end: newly designed lights and minimalist surfaces.
The rear adopts the same clear, reduced design as the front. All-new slim, elongated rear lights stretch across the bodywork, emphasising the car’s width and sporty stance. Chrome strips inside the units generate a precise light pattern, while a smoked glass finish exudes modern elegance. Functional elements, such as boot unlocking, rear-view camera, and washer nozzle, are discreetly integrated into the black area of the lights, maintaining the clean look. The new BMW badge at the rear, set in a recessed frame, echoes the jewel-like presentation at the front.

The sculpted rear apron features reduced forms and clean lines, with exhaust tailpipes (where fitted) hidden beneath the vehicle for consistent appearance, regardless of the selected powertrain. A sculpted diffuser-like element completes the exterior design.

M Sport, M Sport Pro and M Performance models deliver a striking appearance.
Drawing on BMW’s sporty heritage, the new BMW 7 Series asserts a more dynamic presence than ever before. This is most evident in the BMW M Performance models: the BMW i7 M70 xDrive and BMW M760e xDrive, where unique design details underline exceptional performance.

The front end makes a powerful statement thanks to a prominent front apron, with larger air curtains and a bigger central air intake than on other model variants. A subtle lower spoiler lip further visually lowers the centre of gravity and brings the car closer to the road.

BMW M Performance models also feature an exclusive grille graphic with the BMW M logo highlighted by the Iconic Glow. Additional M badges appear in the Hofmeister kink and on the outer edges of the rear lights. The Iconic Glow illumination has been darkened for a sportier appearance, while the BMW Individual crystal headlights incorporate smoke-black crystals for an especially distinctive look.

High-gloss black is used for the M exterior mirrors, finished with signature BMW M stripes, window surrounds and side skirts to sharpen the side profile. An M-specific Welcome Light Animation and dynamic light carpet continue to set the range-topping models apart.

At the rear of the BMW M760e xDrive, contoured twin tailpipes are framed by a unique sculpted rear diffuser. Meanwhile, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive has its own model-specific diffuser element, which spans almost the entire width of the vehicle for a sporty appearance. Vertical reflectors at the outer edges of the rear bumper continue to emphasise a wide stance, while a discreet Black Sapphire M rear spoiler completes the enhanced design.

Other highlights include new 21-inch M aerodynamic wheels in bi-colour Jet Black with mixed-size tyres, plus powerful M Sport brakes with Black high-gloss callipers.

M Sport and M Sport Pro trims enhance the appearance of all other model derivatives. Both bring model-specific M Sport exterior design features with more aggressive front and rear bumpers (predominantly in black), large air intakes, air curtains and a sculpted rear diffuser. These trim levels also comprise M-specific side skirts, M high-gloss Shadowline with high-gloss black window surrounds and mirror bases, 20-inch M aerodynamic wheels, M Sport brakes with blue callipers, BMW M door sill strips, and a special welcome/goodbye animation with M-specific dynamic light carpet.

The M Sport Pro trim builds on M Sport with additional details. It adds a dark BMW M kidney grille design, 21-inch M aerodynamic wheels and extended BMW M high-gloss Shadowline, including a darkened Iconic Glow and rear lights. This trim is rounded off by a black M rear spoiler and an M Sport braking system with black-painted callipers.

BMW Individual: 34 years of exclusive vehicle personalisation. More than 500 exterior colours and combinations available for the new BMW 7 Series.
Following iconic projects such as the BMW 750iL (E32) by Karl Lagerfeld, BMW Individual has evolved into a comprehensive programme for bespoke personalisation. When specifying their new BMW 7 Series, customers can select from an extensive list of BMW Individual options for maximum personalisation.

Beyond the traditional options list, a new Vancouver Green metallic exterior paint can be specified, alongside a new satin-finish aluminium exterior accent. Customers can additionally choose from 12 Individual upholstery options and around 130 Individual paint finishes, including the new Individual Frozen Space Silver. Two-tone combinations (solid, metallic, Frozen/Frozen and metallic/Frozen) enable more than 500 exterior colours and colour combinations for the new BMW 7 Series. For a truly unique vehicle, customers can commission exclusive special editions of the new BMW 7 Series – up to and including a tailor-made one-off from BMW Individual Manufaktur.

A world first: BMW Individual Dual-Finish.
BMW Individual Dual-Finish is a unique paint concept that pairs a matt finish on the lower body with a hand-applied metallic finish on the upper section. Combined with the hand-drawn Coach Line, the result is a discreet yet exceptionally elegant appearance.

A standout feature is the transition between the two finishes. Although matt and metallic paints differ greatly in composition, Dual-Finish creates an impressively seamless join with no visible break – showcasing both the innovation and the expertise of the team applying it.

BMW Individual Dual-Finish sets a new benchmark in paint technology. Developed over two-and-a-half years, the process is currently exclusive to BMW Group Plant Dingolfing and available only for the BMW 7 Series saloon. More than 20 specially trained employees carry out 12 carefully choreographed steps, preparing each car by hand, including taping and sanding the body for the manual application. Each Dual-Finish vehicle spends more than 75 hours (over three full days) in the paint shop – almost six times longer than those specified with a traditional paint finish. Around 50 per cent of this work is carried out by hand.

Interior design.

Inside the cabin, the new BMW 7 Series combines presence, elegance and premium materials with a clear, uncluttered design, while the implementation of Neue Klasse technologies sets the stage for an exceptional on-board entertainment experience for all passengers.

An extensive interior update introduces BMW Panoramic iDrive and a new front-passenger display: the BMW Passenger Screen.
Neue Klasse technologies, including BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X, enhance the BMW-typical driver-oriented interior experience while offering new ways to personalise the look and feel of the cabin. A newly designed instrument panel frames the “floating” free-cut Central Display, positioned ergonomically close to the steering wheel. Adjacent to it is the new front-passenger display, which becomes a key design element. Making its brand premiere in the BMW 7 Series, the BMW Passenger Screen is fitted as standard on all model variants. The BMW Panoramic Vision is also seen for the first time in the updated flagship saloon, alongside a new multifunction steering wheel, further sharpening the cutting-edge feel of the interior design.

From private cinema lounge to mobile workstation: the upgraded BMW Theatre Screen raises the bar once again.
A standout option for the new BMW 7 Series is the 31.3-inch Theatre Screen touchscreen with 8K resolution paired with the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos (also optional) for the ultimate cinema experience. An integrated camera enables video conferencing for the first time, while an HDMI connection allows the display to be used as an extended computer screen.

Even the deployment of the Theatre Screen is an experience: a sound animation accompanies the process as the sunblinds (side windows, rear window and panoramic glass roof) close and the rear ambient lighting dims. Passengers can then adjust the screen position to suit, using the updated BMW Touch Command modules in the rear doors to move it fore and aft to set the viewing angle.

Immersive lighting with a new ambient light strip and additional light elements.
A new interior lighting concept welcomes the driver with a harmonious, immersive experience tailored to their personal preference. The exterior welcome animation continues seamlessly inside, creating a carefully coordinated choreography of light and sound for rear passengers.

A range of light elements produce soft, evenly distributed, wrap-around illumination, creating a modern and distinctly premium ambience.

Central to the animation and the cockpit design is the new ambient light strip spanning the full width of the instrument panel. By day, its delicate alabaster structure is visible; at night, it adds a subtly dynamic light effect. Colour and brightness respond to the time of day and can be adjusted – like all light elements – via My Modes or voice command. A second defining feature is a pair of new light elements integrated seamlessly into the front seatbacks at head-restraint height.

The optional illuminated Sky Lounge panoramic glass roof is another highlight, where more than 40 LEDs light a graphic structure extending across the interior, echoing elements of the seat quilting. Light colours follow the selected My Mode but can also be chosen independently. Illuminated speaker grilles in the rear doors, new rear reading lights and further light features round off the concept.

Bowers & Wilkins sound systems with Dolby Atmos support deliver outstanding listening pleasure with enhanced interior acoustics.
As standard, the new BMW 7 Series features the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System with a seven-band equaliser, up to 18 speakers with metal covers and amplifier output of up to 655 watts.

The optional Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System delivers high-end audio with up to 35 speakers and amplifier output of up to 1,965 watts, setting the segment benchmark. The system includes a seven-band equaliser and seven curated sound profiles. Additional surround speakers are integrated into the head restraints of both front seats and the two outer rear seats. A 4D audio function uses exciters in the front and rear seat backrests to intensify bass perception, even at low volumes.

With the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, passengers can enjoy a rich Dolby Atmos experience, creating a three-dimensional soundscape for compatible formats, allowing sound objects to move freely around the cabin – enhancing streamed films and music with a new level of immersion.

Further improvements to interior acoustics create the ideal stage for premium sound. Measures include side windows sealed flush to the body, standard acoustic glazing, an elastic steering gear mounting on the front axle subframe, an additional model-specific motor mount for the BMW i7, tyres with internal foam absorbers for integrated soundproofing, plus further aeroacoustic optimisation of the exterior mirror caps and improved door insulation.

High-quality materials, refined appointments and innovative details maximise comfort – with around 700 interior combinations available.
Careful selection of materials across surfaces, textures and details give the cabin a distinctive sense of quality and exclusivity.

The instrument panel and centre console come as standard with Fineline Lime open-pored matt fine-wood trim. Optional alternatives include Mirror Oak fine-wood trim Grey metallic high-gloss, BMW Individual Ash Flowing Grey open-pored fine-wood trim strips and – for the first time – Alcantara trim strips in matching interior colours.

The instrument panel’s clean design continues seamlessly into the door trims. A new control panel groups frequently used functions in a sleek, practical layout, while crystal-glass seat controls for backrest, fore/aft position and height adjustment provide a premium look and feel.

BMW Individual Crafted Clarity glass applications also appear in the redesigned centre console – for the start/stop button, gear selector lever and volume control. The integrated cup holder is illuminated, while the inductive smartphone tray (up to 15 watts) is trimmed in soft Alcantara and uses a magnetic holder to secure the device.

New fully electric slot-type air vents are integrated almost invisibly into the instrument panel, reinforcing the clean interior look. Airflow is controlled precisely via the Central Display.

Seat surfaces are upholstered in Veganza as standard, offered in three colours. With leather-like qualities and an exceptionally soft feel, they provide high levels of comfort, with perforated surfaces and prominent quilting. Headlining is finished in Anthracite or Ivory White, depending on the chosen specification.

For M Sport, M Sport Pro and M Performance models, customers can opt for BMW Individual Merino Leather in Black/Atlas Grey with BMW M colour accents in place of Veganza. Optional BMW Individual upholsteries include Merino Leather in Black, Mocha, Smoke White or Tartufo with extensive quilting. Depending on specification, headlining is finished in Anthracite or Atlas Grey; a BMW M Anthracite Alcantara headlining is also available.

BMW Individual interior options also include Merino Leather trim in a new Adelaide Grey finish. The BMW Individual Alcantara headlining can be chosen in Anthracite with Black, Mocha or Adelaide Grey leather, and Atlas Grey with Smoke White or Tartufo. Bi-colour Merino leather variants can also be specified: Smoke White/Light Grey, Black/Dark Grey and Caramel/Atlas Grey.

Another premium BMW Individual interior choice is BMW Individual Merino Leather/cashmere wool in Smoke White/Atlas Grey or Black/Dark Grey. Leather on the upper seat sections contrasts with cashmere-rich cloth below, complemented by elaborate quilting, fine perforation and a symmetrically embroidered pattern. This cashmere wool combination is also available for the centre armrest and neck cushions.

Comfort seats as standard, with optional Executive Lounge for the rear compartment.
Standard specification includes multifunction seats with extensive electric adjustment, seat heating and lumbar support for the driver and front passenger. Adjustment is via the newly designed door-panel controls and the Central Display. The multifunction seats feature a massage function with sevenrogrammes and three intensity levels as standard. They can also be specified with Active Ventilation from the options list. These features can be specified for the rear compartment as well, controllable via BMW Touch Command panels in the rear doors.

The optional Executive Lounge for the rear compartment brings outstanding levels of comfort with an integrated leg rest behind the front-passenger seat, plus an optional quilted, heated armrest with a glass insert and an Alcantara-trimmed smartphone tray with inductive charging. Coordinated adjustment of the backrest (including its upper section), seat fore/aft position and seat angle enables a reclining posture with a torso angle of up to 43 degrees. The front-passenger seat can be moved fully forward and its backrest tilted forward to maximise legroom for the rear passenger. This mechanism has been optimised to maintain the driver’s view in the passenger-side exterior mirror.

Ergonomic, intuitive steering wheels with a new design and operating philosophy.
Five new steering wheels in up to three colours combine expressive design, excellent ergonomics and high-quality materials. The standard leather steering wheel features a flatter top and bottom, a vertical spoke, and forms an integral part of the BMW Panoramic iDrive operating concept. With haptic feedback, the multifunction wheel follows the shy-tech principle, where driver assistance controls illuminate only where relevant.

A unique option is the BMW Individual steering wheel clad in Smoke White with a Dark Silver bezel, available with all Smoke White upholstery variants.

The M leather steering wheel is standard fit for all M Performanceodel variants and selectable for M Sport. Exclusive to M Performance models is a red 12 o’clock marker, BMW M badge and tricolour stitching. Ergonomically positioned thumb controls activate Sport Boost and M Mode. In the BMW M760e xDrive, Sport Boost is selected via black/red paddles. A leather-free steering wheel can also be specified on M Sport and M Sport Pro models with Veganza upholsteries.

Updated automatic doors with Soft Close functionality offer exceptional ease of use.
The optional automatic doors have been further refined for the new BMW 7 Series. An electric open/close button sits ergonomically within each interior door handle, while a single-touch button on the exterior door handles opens or closes the doors, even with gloves or when handles are iced over. Additional control options include the My BMW App, voice commands or via the BMW Panoramic iDrive menu structure. With BMW Digital Key Plus, compatible smartphones or smartwatches can be used as a control device – including to define which doors open when approaching the car.

The new Soft Close mechanism closes each door smoothly, underscoring the luxurious ambience every time occupants enter or exit. A servo mode also allows manual opening and closing with minimal effort. Automatic doors now use radar sensors – integrated discreetly in the side skirts, front end and rear – enabling quicker operation than before. The sensors detect obstacles with high precision and recognise road users approaching the car, further enhancing collision protection.

New digital interior mirror.
An optional digital interior mirror lets the driver switch between a conventional mirror view and a digital display, depending on preference or situation. A camera integrated into the parcel shelf feeds the rear view to the mirror – particularly useful, for example, when the BMW Theatre Screen is in use. The digital interior mirror will be offered from November 2026 and will also be available as a retrofit for models built earlier.

Extensive standard equipment.
The BMW 7 Series comes as standard with a wide range of premium features, including a panoramic glass roof. It uses a single fixed glass surface framed by a steel surround and floods the interior with natural light. It is revealed and hidden via the electrically operated sliding headlining.

All model variants feature four-zone automatic climate control as standard. The BMW i7 includes a model-specific unit with highly efficient new heat pump technology. Rear passengers can set their own temperature preferences via separate controls, supported by an additional solar sensor that optimises rear temperature adjustment. The system also factors in seat heating and, where fitted, seat ventilation to meet the passengers’ selected settings.

The standard Travel & Comfort modular accessories system allows tablets, smartphones, clothes hangers or a folding table to be mounted to the back of the front seats.

Display, operating system and digital user experience.

BMW Panoramic iDrive with BMW Operating System X: clear driver focus, BMW-style.
BMW Panoramic iDrive marks the latest evolution of BMW’s display and operating concept. Built around the interaction between driver and vehicle, it reshapes how information is shown and how key functions are accessed. By seamlessly linking displays, controls and software, the system is intuitive and ergonomic, keeping relevant information in view at all times in accordance with BMW’s ‘hands on the wheel, eyes on the road principle’.

At its core is the BMW Panoramic Vision, which uses newly developed technology to project content across the full width of the lower windscreen. Always visible, it forms the visual foundation of the display concept: driving-related information appears clearly on the right-hand side within the driver’s field of vision, while the central and left-hand areas can be personalised. All information is clearly visible to all passengers.

Above the Panoramic Vision, the BMW 3D Head‑Up Display projects selected content directly into the driver’s line of sight. It delivers highly precise spatial cues – for example for navigation instructions or information from driver assistance systems. Its content is precisely coordinated with Panoramic Vision, creating a consistent, structured display experience.

The 17.9-inch free-cut Central Display is another key element of BMW Panoramic iDrive. Matrix backlight technology delivers brilliant graphics and excellent readability in all light conditions. Its shape is ergonomically optimised, enabling the driver to access key functions with ease, while the improved menu structure with QuickSelect enables simple, intuitive touch control.

Widgets on the Central Display can be dragged and dropped into BMW Panoramic Vision. Up to six can be arranged freely for fast access to frequently used functions. Additional widget content and submenus can be operated via the multifunction steering wheel. Following the shy-tech principle, steering-wheel controls illuminate only when needed. Driver assistance and parking functions sit on the left, while infotainment controls are on the right. A newly designed control panel with haptic feedback lets the driver operate key functions without taking their eyes off the road.

BMW Panoramic iDrive is powered by BMW Operating System X. Based on the Android Open-Source Project (AOSP), it offers extensive update and upgrade capabilities, keeping the system current over the long term and enabling new functions and digital services to be added continuously.

A key strength is extensive customisation. Content, widgets and displays can be configured to suit personal preferences, including colours, display schemes and background images. Users will also be able to set their own photos as the Central Display background via the My BMW App, with interface colours across all displays automatically adapting to the selected image. Personal mode adds further options for tailoring displays, interactions and vehicle settings, while My Modes such as SPORT, EFFICIENT and SILENT expand the range of selectable set-ups.

BMW ID enables a personalised experience with BMW Operating System X. Up to seven users can sign in and access their individual settings. Before departure, the Central Display automatically shows a greeting with the driver’s name and – if desired – their personal profile picture.

Together, BMW Panoramic Vision, BMW 3D Head‑Up Display, Central Display and the multifunction steering wheel – all coordinated by BMW Operating System X – form a coherent, clearly structured operating concept.

Intelligent voice control with the self-learning BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, enhanced by Amazon’s Alexa+¹ AI technology.
The enhanced BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant enables natural-language control of numerous vehicle functions, navigation destination entry and media content – without predefined commands.

It can be summoned with “Hey BMW” or via a steering-wheel button. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant can operate the windows, air conditioning, seating comfort, phone calls and in-car entertainment functions.

Adding Amazon’s Alexa+ AI technology¹ further expands its capabilities. The large language model (LLM) behind this technology enables more dialogue-based interaction as well as access to external knowledge bases, cloud-based services and media content – alongside vehicle-function control. When linked to an Amazon account, users can search for and stream music, listen to the latest news and access a wide range of other content. Availability will be expanded gradually, starting with Germany and the United States.

The new BMW Passenger Screen enhances front-passenger entertainment.
Making its debut in the new BMW 7 Series and fitted as standard, the 14.6-inch BMW Passenger Screen is a first for the BMW brand.

Designed specifically for the front passenger, the full‑HD display supports intuitive multi-touch operation and visually blends into the free-cut Central Display. It provides access to a wide range of infotainment options, including video streaming, gaming, music.

The interior camera enables video conferencing on the go. BMW Digital Premium – standard for the first four years – enables the necessary data allowance for this feature, which is compatible with all the vehicle’s displays. Alternatively, the system can use a mobile data connection of a smartphone via WiFi hotspot or tethering. An integrated shield function helps the driver stay focused: the interior camera detects distraction while on the move and automatically dims the display.

If the front passenger seat is unoccupied, the Passenger Screen automatically switches to a reduced mode and blends into the overall display landscape. Its background adapts to the active My Mode and the ambient lighting.

Top-class in-car entertainment – an expanded offering, including apps from popular third-party providers.
BMW Operating System X enables more entertainment options than ever before. With BMW Digital Premium, customers can use an extensive app, video and gaming portfolio with unlimited data. Alternatively, they can provide their own connection via a smartphone hotspot or a Wi‑Fi network. One connection per vehicle is all that’s required – then the content is available across the Central Display, BMW Passenger Screen and BMW Theatre Screen.

Customers can also use the Video app (powered by TiVo™), which offers an ever-growing selection of content such as news and live/on-demand streaming services. Video can be streamed on the Central Display, BMW Passenger Screen and BMW Theatre Screen when the vehicle is stationary. On the move, playback can continue on the BMW Passenger Screen and BMW Theatre Screen. By signing in with existing accounts, customers can continue films or series exactly where they left off at home. The Video app will be rolled out across all BMW ConnectedDrive markets over the course of 2026.

Further games and entertainment apps are available via the BMW ConnectedDrive Store. The store currently offers more than 60 apps worldwide across categories including music, entertainment, gaming, news, and travel.

BMW Digital Premium: entertainment, security functions and extended navigation features. Standard for the first four years.
BMW Digital Premium includes the Security Assistant, combining functions designed to add peace of mind. Attempted thefts and parking impacts, for example, trigger push notifications in the My BMW App. In the event of an accident, BMW Drive Recorder instantly provides exterior footage in the car and allows it to be exported to a mobile phone. The anti-theft and parking collision recorder can also create automatic video recordings. Optional Remote Inside and Remote 3D View functions let customers check the cabin and the vehicle’s immediate surroundings via the My BMW App.

BMW Digital Premium also expands BMW Maps with additional real-time traffic information, satellite views, 3D building models and proactive guidance tips for more accurate, anticipatory route planning. Parking facilities and points of interest are shown in greater detail, while realistic lane visualisation improves guidance through complex urban road layouts.

Drive systems.

The new BMW 7 Series will be offered in Ireland with a choice of two powertrain options: battery electric and plug-in hybrid. The all-electric models will launch first and plug-in hybrid derivatives will start production in November 2026. Two M Performance models will be offered: the BMW i7 M70 xDrive and the BMW M760e xDrive.

The new BMW i7: three fully electric variants with increased range.
From launch, the new BMW 7 Series will be offered in three all-electric variants: the BMW i7 50 xDrive, BMW i7 60 xDrive and the BMW i7 M70 xDrive. Each variant merges driving pleasure, long-distance comfort and a luxurious ambience with zero local emissions. All models utilise two sound-insulated electric motors for instant, near-silent power delivery, plus standard all-wheel drive for outstanding traction and directional stability. BMW HypersonX driving sounds, sound effects and acoustic signals enhance the experience in the BMW i7 50 xDrive and BMW i7 60 xDrive, while the BMW i7 M70 xDrive features an M-specific sound design.

The new BMW i7 50 xDrive is the entry-level model. Its two drive units generate a maximum system output of 455 hp and overall torque of 660 Nm, enabling 0–100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 210 km/h. It delivers a combined power consumption of 21.8 – 17.9 kWh per 100 km (WLTP), giving the BMW i7 50 xDrive a range of up to 727 km on the WLTP test cycle. Higher energy content and energy density in the new Gen6 BMW cylindrical cells, plus efficiency gains in the drive system, increase range by around 117 km versus its predecessor, the rear-wheel-drive BMW i7 eDrive50.

The BMW i7 60 xDrive produces a combined power output of 544 hp and maximum system torque of 745 Nm. It accelerates from 0–62 mph in 4.8 seconds before reaching an electronically limited 240 km/h. On the WLTP test cycle, combined power consumption is 21.9 – 18.2 kWh per 100 km and the maximum range is up to 726 km (WLTP).

At the top of the line-up is the BMW i7 M70 xDrive. In the BMW M Performance model, two electric motors deliver a system output of 680 hp and 1,015 Nm of torque in SPORT mode, rising to 1,100 Nm when Launch Control or the Sport Boost function is activated. This enables the range topper to complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 3.8 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 249 km/h. Combined WLTP power consumption is 22.9 – 19.7 kWh per 100km with a maximum range of up to 685 km WLTP.

Electrically excited synchronous motors.
Alongside the new high-voltage battery with the latest Gen6 cylindrical cells and upgraded charging technology, the BMW i7 benefits from updated BMW eDrive technology. This includes highly integrated drive units at the front and rear axles, optimised through the use of an SiC inverter and combining the electric motor, power electronics and transmission in a single, compact housing.

The BMW i7 uses electrically excited synchronous motors, in which a precisely controllable electrical feed sets the rotor in motion rather than fixed permanent magnets. This eliminates the need for critical rare earth metals used in magnetic rotor components.

User friendly, intelligent and efficient charging, with a significantly higher charging rate.
With an electric current strength of up to 630 amps – beyond any other model in its segment – and maximum charging power increased from 195 to 250 kW, the new BMW i7 can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 28 minutes at high-power charging stations. The BMW i7 50 xDrive and BMW i7 60 xDrive can add enough energy for up to 235 km of range in ten minutes, while the BMW i7 M70 xDrive can add up to 214 km in the same amount of time. On AC power, the BMW i7 charges as standard at up to 22 kW, allowing a full charge from empty in six hours. At 11 kW, charging takes 12 hours.

Charging-optimised route planning and predictive thermal management for faster DC charging.
For convenient and fast charging on the move, the BMW i7 offers charging-optimised route planning to individual criteria, including automatic battery preparation to accelerate DC charging, plus user-friendly charging stops with Plug & Charge for automatic authentication at charging stations. Custom charging settings can be saved for multiple locations and are applied automatically when the vehicle returns to plug in.

If a destination is outside of the current predicted range, BMW Maps calculates a charging-optimised route including charging stops. The driver defines a preferred minimum state of charge for arrival at charging points and at the destination, with the ability to prioritise specific charging operators along the way. Using AI, the system draws on past charging cycles to estimate realistic charging power, identify potential fault susceptibility and refine station location data, then selects the optimal stop for the route. Users also see occupancy status, the number of charging points and connector types, plus estimated charging costs in advance based on stored tariffs. The vehicle and My BMW App synchronise current information during the journey, enabling passengers to review and adjust the route if required.

Battery preparation brings the high-voltage battery to the ideal temperature before DC charging, increasing charging power as soon as the vehicle is plugged in and reducing overall charging time. When navigating to a DC charging station with BMW Maps, the BMW i7 automatically conditions the battery. This function can also be activated manually via the Central Display or the My BMW App. Battery temperature status and the remaining preparation time can be viewed at any time under Vehicle Status in the car or in the My BMW App.

An intelligent combination of heat pump technology – for the cabin’s integrated heating and cooling circuit, as well as heating and cooling of the drive system and high-voltage battery – ensures exceptionally efficient stationary operation across a wide range of driving situations and outside temperatures from -20 to +30 degrees Celsius. For example, waste heat from the electric motors can be used to warm both the interior and the high-voltage battery simultaneously via the heat pump and, if required, a central electric auxiliary heater.

Adaptive recuperation takes traffic lights into account and can automatically brake the car to a complete stop.
The BMW i7 features adaptive recuperation control that can automatically decelerate the vehicle to a standstill in response to traffic ahead or at traffic lights, improving comfort at near-stationary speeds. When approaching a junction, for example, recuperation intensity can be increased – even without active route guidance – feeding energy into the high-voltage battery while decelerating. On open roads, the coasting function can take over, allowing the car to operate with no drive power when the driver lifts off the accelerator.

Two plug-in hybrid models with a revised combustion engine.
Two plug-in hybrid variants will be introduced in November 2026: The BMW 750e xDrive and the BMW M760e xDrive. Both benefit from an updated straight-six petrol engine, equipped with a new turbocharger. Electric support comes from a permanently excited synchronous motor with an output of 197 hp. It is packaged within the eight-speed Steptronic transmission housing, together with the power electronics, without taking up extra space. Energy is supplied by a fifth-generation high-voltage lithium-ion battery integrated into the underbody, providing 18.7 kWh of usable capacity and an electric range of up to 82kms² (WLTP). AC charging capacity rises to 11 kW, allowing a full charge from empty in 2 hr 15 minutes. From a conventional domestic socket, a full charge takes around 10 hours and 45 minutes.

In the BMW 750e xDrive, the combustion engine and electric motor deliver a system output of 489 hp, with the straight-six contributing 313 hp, and maximum system torque of 700 Nm. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.8 seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 249 km/h. In all-electric mode, the vehicle can reach 140 km/h. WLTP combined consumption is 2.0 -1.7 l/100km, plus 17.7 – 16.2 kWh of electricity per 100 km, with combined CO₂ emissions of 138 – 113 grams per kilometre.

The plug-in hybrid BMW M Performance model, the BMW M760e xDrive, has an increased power output. The output of the combustion engine rises to 426 hp, taking the combined system output to 612 hp – an increase of 41 hp over the outgoing model. Peak torque is 800 Nm. Acceleration from rest to 100 km/h takes 4.2 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 249 km/h, or 140 km/h in all-electric mode. WLTP combined consumption is 2.3 – 1.9 l/100km, plus 18.2 – 16.7 kWh of electricity per 100 km. A model-specific exhaust system adds an M-specific soundtrack to match the car’s sporty character.

Driver assistance systems and driving dynamics.

SAE Level 2 driver assistance and active safety add tangible value.
The new BMW 7 Series features enhanced SAE Level 2 driver assistance systems and active safety functions from the Neue Klasse technology clusters, supported by BMW Symbiotic Drive. With the optional Motorway and City Assistant³, customers benefit from navigation-guided Entry‑2‑Exit assistance on motorways and Address‑2‑Address assistance in urban traffic.

BMW Symbiotic Drive: assistance that stays transparent and keeps the driver engaged.
BMW’s Level 2 systems are engineered for seamless cooperation between human driving behaviour and intelligent assistance. The goal is not maximum automation in every scenario, but a safe, high-benefit experience that remains intuitive and controllable at all times. Even with assistance active, the driver can continue to accelerate, steer or brake without immediately cancelling the function. Active safety functions work unobtrusively in the background – for example, Lane Keeping Assistant assesses steering behaviour and where the driver is looking and intervenes with warnings or steering inputs only if the vehicle is unintentionally drifting out of its lane or a collision risk is detected.

Motorway Assistant enables hands-free driving up to 130 km/h – now available in many European countries and beyond.
Motorway Assistant supports hands-free driving on motorways at speeds of up to 130 km/h (subject to local legislation) and enables BMW Maps-based, navigation-guided Entry‑2‑Exit driving. It performs assisted lane changes once the driver confirms with an eye signal and can also negotiate motorway junctions. (Date for market availability in Ireland subject to confirmation.)

Navigation-guided “Address-2-Address” assistance with the new City Assistant.
With BMW Maps route guidance active, City Assistant supports the driver when turning off, handling right-of-way situations, braking and pulling away at traffic lights (even with no vehicle ahead), negotiating roundabouts and changing lanes in urban areas – provided the system detects the driver is paying attention. It also offers extensive support without active route guidance. Like Motorway Assistant, City Assistant combines vehicle sensors with artificial intelligence and an accurate digital map to handle challenging situations naturally – for example, moving forward confidently when filtering into traffic. During an Address‑2‑Address journey, BMW Symbiotic Drive ensures the assistance follows the driver’s wishes, allowing natural inputs (braking, steering and acceleration) without deactivating the system for seamless driver-vehicle interaction.

Standard-fitted Driving Assistant Plus makes steering and braking easier.
Driving Assistant Plus is standard on the BMW 7 Series. On request, it can control the speed, distance to the vehicle ahead and helps the driver keep the vehicle centred in its lane. It can also adjust speed automatically to detected speed limits and proactively slow for corners, roundabouts and turns. The driver must remain alert and ready to take over whenever driver assistance systems are in use.

An enhanced range of standard active safety functions.
With BMW Symbiotic Drive, active safety functions intervene only when danger is detected, the driver is distracted or not fully in control. Standard features include Lane Keeping Assistant with active lane return, automatic evasion manoeuvres within the car’s own lane, lane change warning, and Side Collision Warning with steering intervention when there is a risk of lateral impact. Crossing Traffic Warning and automatic braking also support the driver when turning into a road or exiting a parking space. The Emergency Brake Assistant with Evasion Assistant can help prevent frontal collisions using maximum braking power if required, and now also responds to wildlife crossing the road. In addition, the exit warning function can delay door opening if an object is detected.

Parking assistance with AI integration.
Standard Park Assist enables assisted parking, and a newly designed surround-area visualisation makes selecting detected parking spaces more intuitive. Manoeuvres are now completed quicker and smoother. Optional Parking Assistant Plus adds a 360° all-round view. Manoeuvre Assistant can record and perform recurring manoeuvres over distances of up to 200 metres. Parking Assistant Professional adds further functionality, including remote parking and stored manoeuvres from up to six metres away via the My BMW app. Driver and parking assistance functions can be added at any time via the BMW ConnectedDrive Store.

Adaptive two-axle air suspension with electronically controlled dampers as standard.
All variants of the new BMW 7 Series feature adaptive two-axle air suspension with automatic self-levelling and electronically controlled dampers as standard. Air supply is managed individually at each wheel to balance uneven loads and maintain optimum ride height at all speeds. The system also adjusts body height to suit conditions, for example, in SPORT mode the body lowers by 10 millimetres. Ride height can be increased by 20 mm when navigating rough roads or steep ramps.

Electronically controlled dampers are regulated separately at each wheel, improving ride quality and handling. Damping adapts smoothly and continuously to the road surface and driving style. The base setting also changes in SPORT mode, tuning the damper response for dynamic driving.

Integral Active Steering.
Standard-fitntegral Active Steering makes manoeuvring easier, boosts agility at moderate speeds and increases stability when cornering or changing lanes at higher speeds. Depending on speed, the rear wheels steer by up to 3.5 degrees in the same or opposite direction to the front wheels. At low speeds, opposite-direction rear steering reduces the turning circle by around 0.8 metres. BMW M Performance models receive specific tuning for Adaptive Chassis Control.

With optional Adaptive Chassis Control Professional, ride comfort is further enhanced while also increasing agility and steering precision. It adds active roll stabilisation, using a centrally positioned 48V electric motor and active anti-roll bars to counter lateral forces and reduce body roll quickly and precisely when cornering. Adaptive Chassis Control Professional is standard fit on M Performance models.

Digital tyre diagnosis uses artificial intelligence to analyse pressure loss and wear.
In addition to a tyre pressure indicator for each wheel, the new BMW 7 Series includes digital tyre diagnosis as standard. Unique in this segment, an AI-supported, cloud-based algorithm can detect pressure loss much earlier than the vehicle’s Tyre Pressure Monitor. If pressure loss is detected, the driver receives a notification and recommended action via the My BMW App. Statistical data and AI methods can also be used to predict tyre wear and forecast remaining tyre life until the recommended minimum tread depth is reached.

Sustainability and production.

Secondary materials, renewable energy, and product and process innovations are key contributors to reducing supply-chain CO₂e. The Gen6 cells in the BMW i7 high‑voltage battery are produced largely using renewable electricity, including for anode and cathode materials. They also incorporate secondary lithium, cobalt and nickel. Together, these measures are expected to cut supply-chain CO₂e emissions by around 30 per cent versus the previous generation.

From 2026, newly designed allow wheels for the BMW i7 will contain 70 per cent secondary aluminium. Both aluminium electrolysis and alloy production utilise renewable energy.

All variants of the new BMW 7 Series will be produced at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in Lower Bavaria, the Group’s lead plant for luxury BMW models. The new flagship saloon celebrates its world premiere on 22 April 2026. The start of production and Irish market launch will follow in September 2026.

The BMW 3 Series is the very essence of the BMW brand and, for five decades, has stood for consistent progress, distinctive design and sheer driving pleasure. Arriving as the second model of the Neue Klasse, the new all-electric BMW i3 builds upon this legacy while taking a technological quantum leap into a new era.

Raising the benchmark for all-electric range, the new BMW i3 is capable of covering of up to 900 km¹ (in accordance with the WLTP test cycle) on a single charge thanks to the innovations of the Neue Klasse. Simultaneously, these technologies are harnessed to further elevate the class-leading driving dynamics that the BMW 3 Series is renowned for. Handling is precise, assured and effortless thanks to the Heart of Joy superbrain – responsible for all driving functions. It combines with three additional high-performance computers – covering automated driving, infotainment and comfort-enhancing functions – culminating in a new digital nervous system, developed completely in-house by BMW. These superbrains offer up to 20 times more processing power than those utilised by previous BMW models.

The BMW i3 launches with the 50 xDrive model variant, which is powered by two electric motors which drive the front and rear axle to develop a combined system output of 469 hp¹ and 645 Nm¹ of torque. Alongside its impressive range, the BMW i3 can be charged at speeds of up to 400 kW at an 800-volt DC charging station to drastically reduce charging times. The result is up to 400 km¹ in just 10 minutes. This capability is enabled by sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology, which teams highly efficient electric motors, 800-volt technology and new high-voltage batteries with energy-dense cylindrical cells.

Instantly recognisable as a 3 Series, the BMW i3 offers a modern interpretation of hallmark BMW Saloon design with its new 2.5-box silhouette. Reduced to the essentials, its design is characterised by a long wheelbase with short overhangs, precise lines and a sloping roofline. Below which sits expansive glass surfaces to flood the cabin with natural light. The front-end is sculpted in a sporty shark-nose design and centred around a reimagined horizontal kidney grille, where twin headlights merge with an innovative light signature for a powerful appearance. The side profile features pronounced wheel arches, retractable flush door handles that extend automatically, and bold lines that flow to the rear. Here, sweeping horizontal taillights in an L-shaped design flank the refreshed BMW roundel and extend far into the shoulder area to emphasise the vehicle’s wide stance. Eleven exterior paint finishes are available from launch, including new M Le Castellet Blue – exclusive to the BMW i3.

Inside, there is an immediate sense of space, thanks to the BMW i3’s purpose-built all-electric architecture. Sporty and contemporary, the cockpit is optimised around the driver. Positioned front and centre is the BMW Panoramic iDrive, which consists of four key components: the BMW Panoramic Vision display, the optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display, the driver-oriented Central Display and the new multi-function steering wheel – helping drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Stylish and sustainable materials are used for the upholstery, including Econeer seat covers, which consist of a recyclable textile composite made from 100 per cent recycled polyester. Customers will be able to customise the interior and exterior of their BMW i3 with different trim levels, including M Sport, following its success within the Irish market.

The new BMW i3 is equipped with a comprehensive portfolio of driver and parking assistance systems, which operate in synergy with the driver to provide increased safety and convenience for everyday driving. This includes Soft-Stop, offering the smoothest stopping process in BMW history.

With the new BMW i3, a holistic approach was implemented towards sustainability, with a focus on decarbonisation along the entire life cycle – from product development, supply chain to production and use phase. The result, depending on the drive variant, annual mileage and generation of the electricity used for charging, is an overall carbon footprint similar to a comparable model with an internal combustion engine² after just 1–2 years of use.

The new BMW i3 will be built at the home of BMW Group, Plant Munich, which has been producing premium vehicles for over a century. Over the last four years, the production plant has seen significant modernisation with the construction of a new body shop, cutting-edge assembly facility and logistics space. Now in its final stages of expansion, Plant Munich will commence BMW i3 production in August 2026, with first Irish customer deliveries expected in autumn. A year later, Munich’s production portfolio will switch exclusively to fully electric vehicles of the Neue Klasse.

The dimensions of the new BMW i3:

Exterior design. The core of the brand reinterpreted: modern timeless and unmistakable.
Following the BMW iX3, the new BMW i3 is the second model of the Neue Klasse to celebrate its premiere. In line with BMW's new design language, it embodies a contemporary take on the distinctive design elements synonymous with the BMW brand. The BMW i3 combines future-oriented dynamics with the hallmark proportions of a sporty BMW saloon. The DNA of the BMW 3 Series, which has been successful for decades, is immediately apparent in its modern 2.5-box design.

Precise lines and striking surfaces characterise the clear, reduced external appearance of the BMW i3. The modern interior has a sporty and inviting design. Advanced digitalisation shapes the user experiencejust as fundamentally as the hallmark BMW driver orientation. Maximum reduction ensures concentration on the essentials.

The silhouette of the new BMW i3 maintains the classic, sporty proportions typical of BMW in a contemporary 2.5-box design introduced with the Neue Klasse. Its appearance is characterised by a long wheelbase, striking surfaces and short overhangs. The shape is aerodynamically optimised with a modern dynamic appearance. Meanwhile, short overhangs and powerfully shaped wheel arches emphasise its sporty stance. A distinctive design feature is the greenhouse, set back from the main structure. In combination with the flared wheel arches, this creates a particularly athletic shoulder area. The low-positioned, precise character line brings the BMW i3's visual centre of gravity closer to the road.

Concealed seals ensure a direct, harmonious transition between the glass surfaces and the bodywork. When the BMW Digital Key Plus is near, the flush-mounted door handles automatically extend.

To increase efficiency and range, the four-door saloon has a completely closed, smooth underbody.

The new 21-inch M 1067 M Aerodynamic wheels emphasise the BMW i3's sporty appearance.

The front end of the new BMW i3 presents the face of the Neue Klasse in a distinctive, modern form. The iconic BMW radiator grille and twin headlights seamlessly integrate with the front sensors, creating a unified visual element that exemplifies the harmony of geometry and light. With meticulous precision, they effectively highlight the broad design of the vehicle.

The light signature, arranged horizontally, spans nearly the whole front. Two daytime driving lights on the left and right with integrated turn indicator function create a new, modern look for the hallmark BMW four-eye face. As an option, the Iconic Glow special equipment enhances the visual depth effect of the BMW radiator grille. Precise contour lighting emphasises the attractive look. Upon request, dynamic lighting effects can add unique highlights to the front section.

Occupying its spot in the "valley" of the sculptured bonnet, the redesigned BMW brand emblem sits above the BMW radiator grille. The front is dynamically inclined towards the road in a shark-nose design, thus emphasising the sporty character of the vehicle.

The new BMW i3 comes to life with its light animation as soon as the driver approaches the vehicle. The Welcome Light Animation begins on the exterior of the vehicle and continues in the interior. The Welcome and Goodbye Animations vary depending on the equipment level. The optional BMW Iconic Glow exterior package offers three impressive lighting animations. Balanced, Relaxed and Excited are available. Customers can individualise the Welcome Light Animation of their BMW i3 to their personal taste.

Similar to the front of the vehicle, the rear of the new BMW i3 features a contemporary and dynamic design language. The athletic shoulders with strongly inset greenhouse are a characteristic feature of the rear end. The prominently flared wheel arches signify sportiness. They powerfully emphasise the width of the saloon as well as its stance on the road. Located at the lower rear, a diffuser element emphasises the dynamic qualities of the BMW i3.

Horizontally aligned rear lights feature a new three-dimensional light signature. They extend far into the prominent shoulders and reflect precision and technological progress. Two light elements per side show the familiar L-shape of previous BMW rear lights in a new, abstract form. At the same time, they underline the width of the saloon and the distinctive character of the BMW 3 Series. The BMW emblem is again located in the "valley" between the rear lights.

A total of eleven different exterior colours will be available at the market launch of the new BMW i3. The new metallic colour M Le Castellet Blue is exclusive to the range. Solid paint, frozen and metallic finishes are also available.

The interior: An inviting experience space – driver-oriented, digital and modern.
The interior of the BMW i3 brings the design language of the Neue Klasse to life with particular intensity. The interior design is dynamic, airy and modern and stands for optimal driver orientation, redesigned user interaction and a harmonious interplay of geometry, light and sound. Digital and real content merge through the coordinated design of the ambient light and the graphics on the central display and the BMW Panoramic Vision.

Thanks to its exceptional interior comfort, the BMW i3 makes the most of the vehicle architecture, consistently focused on electromobility. The Free-Cut Design Central Display is angled towards the driver’s seat and positioned on the instrument panel. This embraces the sporty design of the BMW 3 Series. The lines of the instrument panel flow horizontally on both sides into the dynamically designed door panels. This creates an enveloping wrap-around effect for the passengers, which continues throughout the interior. The optional panoramic roof with climate comfort glass, in combination with the large window areas, creates a feeling of space flooded with light.

The BMW Panoramic iDrive provides a completely new experience of hallmark BMW driver orientation. Four central elements merge into a unique display and operating system in the new BMW i3. The BMW Panoramic Vision and the optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display project relevant information directly into the driver's line of sight, eliminating the need for cockpit displays behind the steering wheel. For the first time in a BMW 3 Series, it has a centre spoke in the upper section. In addition to distinctive thumb rests for improved ergonomics, it has multifunction buttons for particularly intuitive operation. This follows the hallmark BMW principle of "Hands on the Wheel, Eyes on the Road". An M Sport steering wheel with a flattened, dynamic design and spokes at the four and eight o'clock positions is also available as an alternative to the sports steering wheel.

The Free-Cut Design Central Display equipped with matrix backlight technology is also positioned right next to the steering wheel. It is angled at 3 degrees towards the driver for even more direct driver orientation.

The BMW i3 offers customers comprehensive options for personalisation in the areas of lighting, sound, displays and drives via My Modes.

The new BMW i3 comes with sporty and elegant seats with electrically operated adjustment options as well as a Travel & Comfort system as standard. They provide a high level of comfort and secure lateral support. Multifunction seats are available as an option. BMW M Sport seats are also available, which feature a sporty, expressive design and distinctive side sections for particularly secure lateral support. The seat adjustment control panels are each located in the door panels.

The BMW i3 features electrically operated door openers at the front and rear. The centre console between the driver and passenger seats includes a storage area with inductive charging function, the selector lever and physical buttons for parking brake and hazard warning lights.

The BMW i3 features precisely and effortlessly coordinated interior designs with its selection of materials and hues. In addition to the standard Essential interior design with Econeer surface material in Vivid Grey, the new BMW i3 offers three other options. The Contemporary version is available with the Veganza seat cover in the colours Agave Green, Digital White, Castanea and Black. The leather-like, high-quality material is also used in the seats of the BMW M Design World, here in Black combined with M Performtex. In the BMW Individual version, exclusive Merino leather provides luxurious seating comfort, available in black. Customers can also select BMW M Sport seats in Adelaide Grey.

Amongst other trim levels (to be announced in later this year) the BMW i3 will be available in the popular M Sport trim – a favourite for Irish customers.

Modern digital technology meets hallmark BMW driver orientation.
For many decades, BMW vehicles have been regarded as leaders in intuitive operation and perfect ergonomics. This also applies to the latest BMW Panoramic iDrive display and operating system with BMW Operating System X in the new BMW i3. The entire system adheres to the principle: The right information, in the right place at the right time. It is controlled by ergonomically optimised analogue and digital control elements. Many of the BMW i3's innovations in the area of display and control technology are protected by the BMW Group with patent applications.

The new BMW i3 features BMW Panoramic Vision with a projection of content across the entire lower section of the windscreen. This newly-developed display concept with information projection from A-pillar to A-pillar is complemented by the 17.9-inch Free Cut Design Central Display with touch control, the optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display and the multifunction steering wheel with Shy Tech controls. This creates a digital and modern user experience that is quintessentially BMW.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant offers numerous advantages for comfort, personalisation and voice control in the new BMW i3. The introduction of large language model technology(LLM, Alexa+)³ makes voice interaction for the driver even more natural than before. The BMW ID guarantees the best possible individualisation for up to seven users after registering in the BMW i3. The BMW Digital Key Plus becomes the preferred vehicle key on a smartphone or smartwatch.

BMW Panoramic iDrive: Visionary display and operating system and the latest generation of the BMW display and operating concept.
Focussed on the interactions between human and vehicle, BMW Panoramic iDrive redefines vehicle operation, information display and driver orientation. With its intelligent combination of displays, operating elements and software, it creates an integrated system that delivers optimal ergonomics, is intuitive and comfortable to use and provides the driver with the relevant information at all times.

BMW Panoramic Vision: Focus on driver orientation.
At the heart of the display and operating system is the BMW Panoramic Vision. This is a new display concept in which information is projected onto a specially coated area in the lower part of the windscreen that stretches from A-pillar to A-pillar. The content shown in this area is always visible and forms the visual basis of the entire display and operating concept. Key driving information is displayed on the right-hand side, clearly structured and in the driver’s line of sight, without restricting their view of the road ahead. The contents shown in the central and left-hand areas of the display can be personalised and are visible to all occupants.

BMW 3D Head-Up Display: Animations enable spatial perception.
The optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display integrated above the BMW Panoramic Vision projects selected content directly into the driver’s line of sight. This display enables particularly precise spatial perception – for example in the case of navigation instructions, or information from the driver assistance system. The contents of the BMW 3D Head-Up Display and the BMW Panoramic Vision are perfectly coordinated and complement each other, for a consistent, clearly structured display experience.

Free-Cut Design Central Display.
The 17.9-inch Central Display in Free-Cut Design is integrated into the BMW Panoramic iDrive as a further essential control element. It features advanced matrix backlight technology with a resolution of 3,340 x 1,440 pixels, for a brilliant display that is easy to read in all lighting conditions. Its specific shape allows for ergonomically optimal positioning, and thanks to the advanced menu structure with QuickSelect, it offers comfortable, simple and intuitive operation via touch. There is a menu on the Central Display containing widgets that can be moved to the BMW Panoramic Vision by drag and drop. Up to six widgets can be freely arranged in this way to enable quick access to frequently used functions. Using the multifunction steering wheel, further contents and submenus of the widgets can be displayed in the BMW Panoramic Vision.

New multifunction steering wheel with Shy Tech operating elements.
The multifunction steering wheel utilises Shy Tech technology, meaning buttons are only illuminated when the corresponding functions are available. The controls for driving assistance and parking functions are located on the left side, while controls for infotainment functions such as telephone or media player are on the right. These functions can be operated via a special control panel that provides haptic feedback. This enables drivers to control key functions safely and accurately without needing to take their eyes off the road.

Customisability as a key feature of the system.
Contents, widgets and displays are individually configurable, allowing them to be adapted to personal preferences. Users can select colours, display schemes and background images to create a personalised digital experience. There is a wealth of options enabling users to customise the user interface design in Personal Mode in line with their own preferences, enabling advanced individualisation of displays, interactions and vehicle-related settings. Further My Modes such as Sport, Efficient and Silent add to the range of personal setups available to customers.

The BMW ID opens the door to a customisable driving experience with BMW Panoramic iDrive. Up to seven users can sign in to the vehicle with their BMW ID, allowing them to enjoy every drive with their individual settings. The personalisation process begins with initial registration in the vehicle, which is completed by scanning a QR code in the Central Display using a smartphone. The personal BMW ID is then added to the vehicle and the user is guided through the main steps of initial setup, which can also be started prior to vehicle collection via the My BMW App if desired. In doing so, the vehicle is automatically stored in the My BMW App along with the corresponding profile. All personal vehicle settings, such as the configuration of the BMW Panoramic Vision, media favourites, recent destinations, seat settings with entry and exit configuration are now automatically available for every journey, providing the profile has been linked to a BMW Digital Key Plus or physical key. Before setting off, a message greeting the driver by name will automatically appear in the Central Display – along with their personal profile picture, if desired.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.
The multimodal operating logic of BMW Panoramic iDrive combines touch, haptic and voice-based interactions. A key role is played by the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, the operating concept in the new BMW i3. It enables the control of numerous vehicle functions, navigation destinations and media contents using natural language, without the need for defined voice commands. The self-learning voice assistant can be activated with the prompt “Hey BMW” or by pressing a button on the steering wheel’s right-hand control panel. Following initial setup, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is positioned in the centre of the BMW Panoramic Vision by default and is always ready to respond to commands. If desired, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant can make proactive suggestions based on routines and more. This intelligence is further enhanced by the BMW Operating System X, which considers significantly more contexts, such as driving situations, environmental analysis and interior recognition.

The addition of Amazon’s Alexa+ AI technology³ to the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant further enhances capability. The integration of Amazon Alexa+ into the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant marks a technological quantum leap focussed on added customer value.

The AI technology used is a Large Language Model (LLM), a generative AI that understands language and is capable of formulating its own responses. This makes for more dialogue-oriented voice interactions; it enables intuitive and intelligent exchanges and supports access to external knowledge bases, cloud-based services and media contents as well as the control of vehicle functions. Linking the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant to an Amazon account allows the user to search for and stream music, access the latest news and use a wide range of other content with ease. Availability will be gradually expanded, starting with the markets Germany and the USA.

BMW Panoramic iDrive is based on a scalable concept, and the underlying system architecture enables flexible integration of future digital services, additional display formats and new functions.

The BMW Digital Key Plus becomes the preferred vehicle key.
BMW Digital Key Plus enables smartphones and smartwatches from all leading manufacturers (incl. Apple, Samsung, Google) to be easily set up to function as a vehicle key. Ultra-wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth technology are used to enable the smartphone and vehicle to communicate with one another at close range. The UWB technology allows the user’s location to be pinpointed extremely precisely while also ensuring the highest possible vehicle access security (certified according to the Car Connectivity Consortium’s standard).

The BMW Digital Key Plus has further benefits to offer in addition to highly convenient vehicle access. Customers can share the digital key with others easily and securely using a messaging app, while defining individual roles and rights at the same time. It also enables the use of additional functions via the smartphone wallet, such as remote operation of the tailgate.

BMW Operating System X with high update and upgrade capability.
BMW Operating System X is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and offers a high level of update and upgrade capability. As a result, the system remains up to date in the long term and can be continuously expanded with new functions and digital services.

Four specialised superbrain high-performance computers.
At the heart of the new vehicle architecture are four superbrain high-performance computers. Each is assigned a core function in the new BMW i3: The Heart of Joy primarily manages driving dynamics, while separate computers are dedicated to automated driving and parking, infotainment, and essential and comfort functions like vehicle access and climate control. They offer up to 20 times higher computing power compared to previous BMW models.

Electronics in four zones: More efficiency, less weight.
The four-zone cabling reduces the complexity of the cable harnesses. In addition, the new BMW i3 uses Smart eFuses instead of classic fuses. This intelligent and flexible power protection combined with the zonal architecture enables shorter and thinner cables, saves weight, reduces energy consumption thanks to intelligent power distribution, and increases overall vehicle efficiency.

Over-the-air updates allow for continuous improvements.
The new BMW i3 will continue to receive new functions, optimised performance, or AI-supported features via software updates long after purchase. All future BMW models will feature the electronics and software architecture developed for the Neue Klasse.

Heart of Joy and BMW Symbiotic Drive.
For decades, the BMW 3 Series has been synonymous with sheer driving pleasure worldwide. In this iconic BMW model, sportiness, precise handling, and long-distance comfort are seamlessly merged to form an exceptional blend. The new BMW i3 brings these qualities into the age of the Neue Klasse and utilises previously unattainable potentials of electromobility. The Heart of Joy defines the brand- new driving experience – delivering greater accuracy, improved assurance and heightened agility. In combination with the advanced suspension technology of the BMW i3, this creates a completely new dimension of driving pleasure. Multiple driving and parking assistance systems, which operate in synergy and securely with the driver while maintaining the unique BMW character, provide increased safety and convenience for everyday driving.

Heart of Joy: Ten times faster than previous systems.

Control systems in vehicles have a long tradition at BMW. It began back in 1979 with the first use of an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) in the BMW 7 Series. The Heart of Joy controls driving, braking, some steering functions, charging and recuperation. It responds ten times faster than previous systems, resulting in effortless and assured handling. This enables the BMW i3 to navigate corners with precision and agility for maximum accuracy. The Heart of Joy reduces the number of necessary control interventions. The resulting cornering behaviour is more consistent and predictable, which contributes to an even greater feeling of safety.

Soft-Stop: The smoothest stopping process in BMW history.
The electric motors' precise control ensures the new BMW i3 decelerates smoothly without any jerks or braking noise. Soft-Stop ensures an unparalleled stopping process.

In everyday driving, the recuperation brake takes over almost all braking operations in the BMW i3. The friction brakes are only utilised during sporty driving or when emergency braking is required.

Suspension: Sporty and comfortable. Optional adaptive M suspension.

The new BMW i3 is distinguished by its hallmark high driving dynamics paired with long-distance comfort. It takes advantage of the architecture, which is uniformly designed for electric mobility. The new, flat high-voltage battery enables a low centre of gravity. As standard, the BMW i3 has a suspension with stroke-dependent shock absorbers. In addition to the two-joint spring strut front axle, it features a new five-link rear axle. Front and rear anti-roll bars with highly preloaded bearings are used for even more dynamic handling. An adaptive M suspension is available as an option in the all-wheel drive BMW i3. It boosts the dynamic sporty nature of the BMW i3 while maintaining ride comfort.

BMW Symbiotic Drive ensures seamless interaction between the driver and driver assistance systems.
The advanced Level 2 driver assistance systems in the BMW i3 are designed down to the smallest detail for seamless interaction between assistance and driving inputs. The aim is not attaining the highest possible level of automation in every situation, but a safe driver assistance experience that offers maximum benefit and is always controllable. As a result, the driver always remains involved in an interplay of human and artificial intelligence. This allows acceleration, steering or braking even when driver assistance is engaged, without instantly causing a deactivation of the assistance system. The clear operating logic and displays in the BMW Panoramic iDrive ensure that assisted driving behaviour is intuitive and can be influenced at any time. The symbiotic interplay of driver and vehicle can also be experienced with active safety functions such as Lane Departure Warning. The driver's intent is recorded based on steering behaviour and the direction of vision, so that the system assists with warning and steering intervention only when the driver unintentionally drifts off his own lane or an impending collision is detected.

Driving Assistant Plus takes the strain out of steering and braking.If desired, it controls the speed and distance from the vehicle in front and helps the driver to keep the vehicle comfortably in the lane. The system can automatically detect recognised speed limits and adjust the speed before bends, roundabouts and turns. All optional driver and parking assistance functions can also be activated digitally in the BMW ConnectedDrive Store at a later stage.

Sixth-generation electric drive with round cell high-voltage battery.
Sixth generation BMW eDrive technology (Gen6) features an all-new high-voltage battery concept and 800-volt technology. As one of the standout innovations of the Neue Klasse, it brings significant range improvements, faster charging, up to 400 kW DC charging capacity and bidirectional charging functionality.

In addition to advanced, highly efficient electric motors, it includes fundamentally new high-voltage batteries with cylindrical cells. Compared to Gen5, both range and charging speed are increased by 30 per cent. The new BMW i3 has a range of up to 900 kilometres¹ (according to the WLTP test cycle).

Newly developed lithium-ion cylindrical cells for higher energy density.
The cylindrical cells within the high-voltage storage system have a diameter of 46 millimetres and a height of 95 millimetres. Their optimal design brings a 20 per cent increase in volumetric energy density compared to prismatic cells used as part of Gen5 technology.

Cell-to-pack design enables high energy density at pack level.

The cells are integrated directly into the high-voltage battery without modular construction or structural elements. This cell-to-pack design enables high energy densities at pack level, reducing weight and costs. The combination of cell design and cell-to-pack construction is an in-house development and the result of the BMW Group's expertise in battery technology built up since 2008.

Pack-to-open-body construction allows for a flat battery design.

Thanks to the pack-to-open body concept, the battery housing in the new BMW i3 also functions as a structural component. The chassis has an open floor, which is closed by installing the high-voltage battery. The housing cover thus assumes the function of the vehicle underbody. This saves weight and enables a flat and aerodynamically efficient battery design. Another advantage: the torsional rigidity of the body also benefits from the pack-to-open-body construction, which has a positive effect on the driving dynamics of the new BMW i3.

Energy Master: The highly intelligent control centre.
The electrical and electronic components for the high-voltage battery can be found in the Energy Master. It is positioned on top of the high-voltage battery and developed in-house by the BMW Group. It provides electricity to the motors and the vehicle electrical system and manages all data from the high-voltage battery. It ensures intelligent, efficient and safe battery operation.

Two highly efficient electric motors with EESM and ASM technology.
The BMW i3 50 xDrive has an electric motor on both the front and rear axles. Together, they provide a system output of 469 hp¹ and a torque of 645 Nm¹.

An electrically excited synchronous motor (EESM) is integrated into the rear axle – the primary drive axle. It is based on a stator, which generates a rotating magnetic field by means of three-phase alternating current, and a rotor, which has electrically-excited electromagnets. This design makes the EESM fundamentally different from motors with permanent magnets, as the magnetic field in the rotor can be flexibly regulated. In turn, it is possible to reduce the magnetic field at low load and thus avoid losses. In addition, strong magnetic fields can be generated under high load. This results in high torque and constant power output up to maximum motor speed.

The entire system is controlled by an inverter, which converts the direct current of the battery into the required alternating current. It also ensures that the rotor is excited and is responsible for all control and monitoring processes. As a result, the EESM is always operated at optimum efficiency.

The EESM in the BMW i3 50 xDrive is supplemented by an asynchronous motor (ASM) on the front axle. The ASM works on the induction principle and is a compact and lightweight addition to the EESM. The ASM differs fundamentally in its rotor design: instead of magnets or electrical excitation, the rotor consists of aluminium rods that are connected via short-circuit rings. The necessary torque is generated by induced currents that occur when there is a difference in speed – known as slip – between the stator field and the rotor. The ASM is robust, resistant to heat and made from iron and aluminium. The combination of both types of motors enables a technological quantum leap: together, they reduce energy losses by 40 per cent, reduce the weight of the drive system by 10 per cent and reduce manufacturing costs by 20 percent compared to Gen5.

The EESM of the new BMW i3 is manufactured at the BMW Group plant in Steyr in Upper Austria, and the high-voltage battery at the BMW Group plant in Debrecen, Hungary. The BMW Group's Landshut plant is contributing the Energy Master.

BMW Charging.
For the Neue Klasse, the sixth generation of BMW eDrive technology used in the BMW i3 has undergone significant redevelopment in both its hardware and software. It represents a technological leap in energy density, charging power and range. This results in significantly shorter charging times. In just ten minutes, the BMW i3 50 xDrive charges up to 400 kilometres¹ of range at an 800-volt fast charging station via 400 kW directional current. A control unit with an integrated switching matrix also allows the continued use of 400-volt DC stations. Optionally, drivers can charge their BMW i3 using alternating current (AC) at speeds at up to 22 kW.

As a further innovation, the new BMW i3 – like all future Gen6 electric vehicles – will have bidirectional charging functionality. The energy stored in the battery can thus be used not only for the drive and the electrical consumers in the vehicle, but also as a mobile power bank that provides electricity directly from the high-voltage battery for many use cases.

Innovative charging products – for at home or on the go.
Innovative equipment optimises charging both at home and on the go. BMW products make charging flexible. New products for bidirectional charging complete the range. The charging cable (Mode 3) or the Multifunction Charger fits into the 31-litre storage compartment under the bonnet.

The BMW Multifunction Charger (MFC): The new all-purpose solution for charging at home and on the go also supports the functions of bidirectional charging. A new design with an ergonomically optimised charging plug, a cable length of six metres and suitable adapters for various purposes make the MFC more flexible than ever. For charging and discharging Gen6 electric vehicles, adapters are available in Europe for household and high-voltage current, public charging (Mode 3) with up to 11 kW and for the Vehicle-to-Load function (V2L).

Simple, convenient, digital: Charging becomes an experience.

The BMW i3 features many innovations for convenient and fast charging on the go. This includes route optimised charging planned according to individual criteria with automatic battery preparation for faster DC charging and an intelligent charging flap that opens automatically and Plug & Charge for automatic authentication at charging stations.

Route planning optimised for charging: The BMW Maps navigation system calculates a route optimised for charging, including charging stops, if the destination is outside the current range. The driver determines the charging status at which charging stations and the destination should preferably be reached and which charging station providers they wish to use. Utilising AI, the system learns from past charging processes. For example, the realistically expected charging power, the susceptibility to faults or the exact location data of individual charging stations and includes the optimal charging station in the planning of the route. For full transparency, the customer receives information about the current occupancy status, the number of charging stations and plug types. The expected duration and costs of charging stops are shown in advance based on the individually stored charging rates. The vehicle and the My BMW App synchronise current information while driving; this allows the passenger to check the route on the go and adjust it if necessary. The availability of restaurants, playgrounds, toilets or shopping facilities near the charging stop is also shown.

Battery preparation for faster DC charging: Battery preparation ensures that the high-voltage battery is brought to the optimal temperature before plugging in at a DC charging station. This increases charging capacity immediately after plugging in and shortens the charging time. When the driver actively routes to a DC charging station with BMW Maps, the BMW i3 automatically conditions (heats or cools) the battery. Alternatively, the function can be activated manually via the Central Display or the My BMW App. The current status of the battery temperature and the time remaining for battery preparation can be viewed at any time in the BMW i3 vehicle status and in the My BMW App.

Intelligent charging flap: The charging port is located on the rear right side of the vehicle It is possible to open the charging flap manually, but this is no longer necessary as the intelligent charging flap opens automatically as soon as the customer's charging request is detected. One of the triggers for opening is AI-supported: If the customer walks towards a known or learned charging point, the movement path reveals the charging intention and the flap opens. If no charging cable is connected, the charging flap closes automatically – as it does after the charging process is complete or when the vehicle is ready to drive.

Sustainability: a holistic concept for conserving resources and reducing CO₂e emissions.
As with the BMW iX3, the BMW Group is also taking a holistic approach to sustainability with the new BMW i3. The focus is on decarbonisation along the entire life cycle – from product development, supply chain to production and use phase.

The CO₂e advantage is already apparent after 1–2 years of use.
Depending on the model variant, annual mileage and type of electricity used for charging, the new BMW i3 50 xDrive achieves a CO₂e benefit over a comparable model with an internal combustion engine² after just 1–2 years of use.

Decarbonisation in the supply chain.
A key starting point for reducing CO₂e emissions is targeted decarbonisation throughout the supply chain. Renewable energy, increased use of secondary materials, and product and process innovations contribute to a significant reduction in emissions in the supply chain of all drive variants.

The result of this consistent approach can be proven by the emissions reductions achieved: CO₂e emissions in the supply chain were reduced by around 33 per cent even during the product development of the BMW i3².

Innovative materials and technologies in the interior and exterior.
The "Design for Circularity" principle is also systematically applied in the new BMW i3. This approach entails an enhanced utilisation of secondary materials, strategic selection of materials and the optimisation of dismantling capabilities.

In the front bumper of the BMW i3, 30 per cent recycled plastic is used in the trim. In addition, the variety of materials in the entire bumper without attachments has been reduced from 15 to 7 materials compared to its predecessor (BMW 3 Series). Thanks to the extensive use of a plastic particularly suitable for recycling, the proportion of recyclable plastics was increased from approximately 46 per cent in the predecessor model to approximately 85 per cent². This creates the basis for the recovery of high-quality recycled plastics from the vehicle.

Another example of the implementation of the “Design for Circularity” principle in the BMW i3 is the “Essential” Econeer seat covers, which consist of a recyclable textile composite. The base material of the outer material contains of 100 per cent recycled polyester. Utilising recycled PET as a raw material for the polyester yarn significantly cuts down CO₂e emissions and water usage in production when compared to using primary materials. In addition, the dismantling capacity of the seat cover has been improved to facilitate sorted separation at the end of the life cycle.

Use of secondary materials in the new BMW i3. 
The new BMW i3 consists of a total of around 30 per cent of secondary materials²: the proportion of secondary materials in the aluminium cast components of the swivel bearings and hub carriers is 80 per cent; the cast aluminium rims consist of 70 per cent secondary aluminium. The housing of the Gen6 motor on the rear axle also consists of approximately two-thirds recycled aluminium.

The Gen6 battery cells of the BMW i3 high-voltage battery pack use a proportion of secondary materials for cobalt, lithium and nickel. Energy from renewable sources is also used in the production of anode and cathode material as well as in cell production. Compared to a previous Gen5 cell in the BMW i4, the CO₂e footprint in the cell supply chain is reduced by around 33 per cent per Wh. Another example of the innovative use of materials and secondary materials is the engine compartment cover and the storage compartment under the front door of the BMW i3. The base material consists of 30 per cent recycled marine plastic. This is post-consumer material made from used fishing nets and ropes. The starting material of the yarn for the textile of the headliner and the A-pillar contains 100 per cent recycled material.

Improved efficiency in the usage phase.
The EfficientDynamics technology package optimises vehicle efficiency across all subsystems during the usage phase. It includes aerodynamics, lightweight construction, rolling resistance and overall energy management. The BMW Group has been using EfficientDynamics since 2007 and is independent of the drive technology.

In line with the sustainability goals of the BMW Group.
The BMW Group's commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement and to Net Zero by 2050 at the latest is an integral part of the holistic 360° sustainability approach, which is anchored in the corporate strategy. The company has set itself ambitious, scientifically derived CO₂e targets for the coming years. For example, the BMW Group intends to reduce its CO₂e emissions by a total of at least 40 million tonnes of CO₂e in 2030 and by around 60 million tonnes of CO₂e by 2035. This means an additional reduction of around 20 million tonnes of CO₂e in addition to the existing 2030 target.

Transparency thanks to the Product Carbon Footprint.
The BMW Group has long published the TÜV-certified greenhouse gas emissions (TÜV = Technical Inspection Association) of its vehicles as part of the Vehicle Footprint initiative. This report is publicly available here for all drives of the new BMW 3 Series at the start of production and can also be accessed in the My BMW App. This creates increased transparency regarding the proportions of secondary raw materials (SRQ) and CO₂e emissions over the entire life cycle of the vehicles.

The BMW M5 is powering into a new era. With 40 years of history under its belt, the legendary high-performance saloon from BMW M GmbH is entering its seventh model generation with an electrified drive system for the first time. The model-specific M HYBRID system gives the new BMW M5 (electric power and fuel consumption, weighted, combined: 1.41 – 1.33 l/100km and 25.5 – 25.0 kWh/ 100 km according to WLTP; CO2 emissions, weighted, combined: 39 – 37 g/km as per WLTP; fuel consumption with discharged battery: 8.58 – 8.49 l/100km; CO2 classes: weighted, combined B, with discharged battery G) a maximum output of 727 hp and a peak torque of 1,000 Nm. The combination of a high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an electric motor, plus power transfer courtesy of an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission and M xDrive all-wheel drive, enables acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds.

The imposing power delivery and emotionally engaging performance experience served up by the new BMW M5 are accompanied by a new interpretation of the high-performance car design for which M is renowned. Prominent wheel arch and side skirt extensions, the sculptural front apron and model-specific surfacing around the C-pillar – including an embossed “M5” logo for the Hofmeister kink – give the car an athletic appearance that helps to differentiate it more clearly than ever from the BMW 5 Series Saloon. At the same time, an unusually high proportion of surfaces painted in body colour create a sleek appearance with stylish references to its superior dynamic abilities.

The exterior design – like the ambience of the luxurious interior, which is enhanced with M-specific features – accentuates the multi-layered character of the new BMW M5. Its sense of poise and assurance is fuelled by vast reserves of power that can be summoned at any time. Kept discreetly in reserve during relaxed, electric-only cruises, this performance comes to the fore as the BMW M5 reveals the “sport saloon” side to its personality over longer distances – and is unleashed in full on the track.

The M HYBRID system, power transmission and chassis technology are tuned to give the M5 specific performance characteristics, ensuring transverse and longitudinal dynamics unparalleled in this market segment. Together with its similarly outstanding elasticity, the new BMW M5 takes M performance to a new level.

BMW Retailers across Ireland are taking orders for the new BMW M5 from today, with the first appearance and world premiere of the vehicle taking place at Goodwood Festival of Speed in July 2024. Production of the new BMW M5 will begin at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing in the same month, with the first Irish customer deliveries from November 2024, which will also be accompanied by the introduction of the new BMW M5 Touring. M HYBRID drive system in the new BMW M5: intoxicating performance, impressive electric range.

The M HYBRID drive system in the new BMW M5 brings a 4.4-litre V8 engine with classic high-revving character together with an electric motor, whose performance characteristics are tuned specifically for the M5 and which is integrated into the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. The combustion engine benefits from cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology, a cross-bank exhaust manifold and optimised oil separation. It develops maximum output of 585 hp and peak torque of 750 Nm. The electric motor delivers a maximum output of 197 hp and a nominal torque of 280 Nm. However, thanks to a pre-gearing stage, the effective torque at the transmission input is boosted to 450 Nm.

The combination of combustion engine and electric motor adheres to the same principle as the drive system in the BMW M Hybrid V8 endurance racing machine. The ability of the electric motor to generate its power instantly and the intelligently controlled interplay of the combustion engine and motor ensure the M HYBRID system responds without delay to every movement of the accelerator. The linear power delivery typical of BMW M models is found here in particularly compelling form. The eight-cylinder engine can spin to a maximum 7,200 rpm as the new BMW M5 treats its driver to the sensation of relentless power development into the upper reaches of the load and speed ranges. Top speed is limited to 249 km as standard, but the limiter can be raised to 304 km if the optional M Driver’s Package is specified.

The sports exhaust system fitted in the new BMW M5 underscores the performance experience with a multi-faceted and enthralling engine note. It features electrically controlled, continuously adjustable flaps and the two pairs of dual tailpipes familiar from other M models, each with 100-millimetre trims in Black Chrome.

Providing an acoustic accompaniment to the power delivery of the electric motor is BMW IconicSounds Electric. This M-specific electric drive sound provides authentic responses to movements of the accelerator when the car is operating in all-electric mode. With the relevant drive system configuration, it also generates an engaging boost track to highlight the arrival of extra electric power on top of the output from the V8 engine.

In all-electric operating mode, the new BMW M5 can hit speeds of up to 140 km. The high-voltage battery located low in the car’s underbody has 18.6 kWh of usable energy, enabling an electric range of 67 – 69 km (WLTP), which is unmatched by any rival. The Combined Charging Unit allows AC charging at up to 7.4 kW, and from November 2024 production, the maximum charging rate will go up to 11 kW.

The power generated by the combustion engine and electric motor is channelled to the road via the all-wheel-drive M xDrive system, with the rear-biased setup particularly pronounced in 4WD Sport mode. However, the driver can also select 2WD mode which sends power exclusively to the rear wheels with the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system switched off, which will appeal to experienced drivers who prefer a pure-bred performance experience. This further developed iteration of M xDrive – like the electronically controlled Active M Differential at the rear axle – is tailored specially to the performance characteristics of the M HYBRID drive system.

Sophisticated chassis technology with M-specific tuning.

The chassis design of the new BMW M5 comprises a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle with bespoke kinematics and elastokinematics, plus a host of other specially tuned components. The electrically assisted rack-and-pinion steering with M Servotronic and variable steering ratio has a rigid connection to the front axle subframe to ensure optimal feedback from the road and a high degree of directional accuracy. In conjunction with the wide tracks and the excellent torsional rigidity of the body and chassis mountings, this combination produces the handling attributes for which BMW M models are renowned, shaped by agility, precision and the linear build-up of lateral forces.

Also fitted as standard is Adaptive M Suspension with electronically controlled dampers and Integral Active Steering, which can steer the rear wheels by up to 1.5 degrees. M-specific tuning, individually selectable settings, and the ability to adjust the dampers at each wheel independently optimise the vehicle's connection to the road. This enhances the car's versatility, offering everything from everyday driving comfort to track-ready dynamic performance. The rear-wheel steering improves directional stability at high speeds, as well as agility and comfort when manoeuvring.

Traction, agility and directional stability all benefit from near-actuator wheel slip limitation and the networking of all control systems within the integrated transverse dynamics management setup. Both the standard M Compound brakes and optional M Carbon ceramic brakes combine with an integrated braking system that presents the driver with two pedal feel settings. M light-alloy wheels (20-inch at the front axle, 21-inch at the rear) are fitted as standard.

Assistance systems for assured and comfortable driving.

The new BMW M5 offers a significantly wider selection of standard and optional systems for automated driving and parking compared to its predecessor, increasing assurance and comfort in day-to-day driving. Standard specification for the new seventh generation BMW M5 brings features such as front collision warning, Lane Departure Warning including lane return with steering assistance, the Evasion Assistant, the Attentiveness Assistant and the Speed Limit Info system. The optional Driving Assistant Professional adds Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function together with tech including the Steering and Lane Control Assistant, traffic light detection, automatic Speed Limit Assist and Active Navigation.

The new BMW M5 is equipped as standard with Parking Assistant Professional, which enables automated parking and manoeuvring over distances of up to 200 metres, controllable either from inside the car or remotely via smartphone.

Greater flexibility to personalise the driving experience.

The control panel on the centre console of the new BMW M5 houses a model-specific composition of buttons, which can be used to tailor the driving experience to individual preferences in a variety of ways. The Setup button provides direct access to the configuration of the drive system, Drivelogic, chassis, steering, braking system and M xDrive, as well as the intensity of brake energy recuperation. Two overall vehicle setups can be stored and selected quickly using the M buttons on the steering wheel. The Launch Control function is available in all the M Setup configurations, except for the M xDrive system’s 2WD mode.

Pressing the DSC button activates M Dynamic Mode, increasing the DSC intervention thresholds for brake inputs and engine power reduction. Alternatively, DSC can be switched off completely. Another button allows the driver to select M Mode. When they switch from the default ROAD setting to SPORT, interventions from the driver assistance systems are restricted to just the essential functions required for sporty driving, as is the content shown in the information display. The standard-fit M Drive Professional, also enables the use of TRACK mode, with other features including the M Laptimer and the Boost Control function, which maximises longitudinal dynamics when executing mid-range sprints and overtaking manoeuvres.

The operating mode of the M HYBRID system can also be adjusted as desired. The new M Hybrid button allows the driver to choose between HYBRID mode – for intelligently controlled interplay between the combustion engine and electric motor to maximise either efficiency or performance, depending on the driving situation – and the ELECTRIC setting, in which the combustion engine is only brought into play by accelerator kickdown or using the gearshift paddles. eCONTROL mode is used for effective brake energy recuperation and maintaining battery charge at a constant level. In addition, DYNAMIC mode focuses on a balanced system power for consistent performance during track driving, while the DYNAMIC PLUS mode delivers full system power for maximum performance on the racetrack in short burst (e.g. qualifying).

Progressive sports car cockpit, M-specific displays on the BMW Curved Display, exclusive ambience.

In addition to the M-specific control panel on the centre console, the progressive sports car cockpit in the new BMW M5 features a newly designed, flat-bottomed M leather steering wheel with illuminated M buttons, M multifunction seats with extensive electric adjustment options, and the BMW Curved Display, which, like the standard BMW Head-Up Display, includes M-specific content. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional also brings the BMW Maps navigation system and the Augmented View function on the control display.

An upgraded version of BMW iDrive features as standard in the new BMW M5. It is based on BMW Operating System 8.5 and designed with touch control and natural speech in mind. The digital tech now also covers the controls for the climate control functions, with temperature selection, airflow intensity, seat heating and steering wheel heating now controlled by touch screen via permanent buttons in the lower section of the control display or by voice command.

Also playing their part in the exclusive interior ambience are the standard Merino leather trim, the BMW Interaction Bar, four-zone air conditioning, heated front seats, ambient lighting with M-specific interior lighting including Welcome and Goodbye Animation, and the panoramic glass sunroof. Standard specification on the new BMW M5 also includes ambient lighting, the Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, a wireless charging tray, Comfort Access, an alarm system, automatic tailgate operation and the charging cable Professional for charging during a journey.

The options list includes the M Carbon exterior package, an Alcantara headliner, active seat ventilation, and a trailer tow hitch. For almost 50 years, the BMW 3 Series has represented the core of the BMW brand. It epitomises sporty driving pleasure in the premium midsize class and has made significant contributions to design, driving dynamics and technological innovations in this segment time and again across seven model generations. The extensive design, powertrain, digitalisation and equipment revisions already introduced in 2022 will now be followed with a fresh package of updates that take the cars’ visual appeal and cutting-edge modernity to new levels. New high-voltage batteries increase the electric range of the plug-in-hybrid models to a maximum of 101km in the WLTP cycle. New chassis tuning further enhances the balance between sporting agility and comfort. The new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring will also now feature BMW Operating System 8.5 which provides the basis for intuitive and comfortable operation via the upgraded BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and new navigation functions including Augmented View.

These new technological advances are accompanied by precise design modifications for the exterior and interior. New exterior paint finishes and light-alloy wheels accentuate the sporting elegance exuded by the Saloon and Touring. Newly designed steering wheels and instrument panel and sophisticated optional features such as the Crafted Clarity glass applications further elevate the sophistication of the 3 Series interior.

The new BMW 3 Series Saloon is priced from €56,700 and BMW 3 Series Touring from €58,910. Both models will begin production from July 2024, with Ireland customer deliveries starting in the summer. BMW Group Plant Munich will be building both models, while the BMW 3 Series Saloon will also be produced at BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí in Mexico.

BMW 3 Series is the market leader in the premium segment of its class.

The most important sales markets for the new BMW 3 Series are China, Germany, the UK/Ireland and other European countries, as well as the USA. This is especially true of the Saloon, while the Touring model is particularly in demand in Europe. Its distinctive design and increased practicality also means that it is also popular in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.

The BMW 3 Series embodies the brands hallmark features of driving pleasure, elegantly sporty design and sustained technological progress ever since its debut in 1975. More than 20 million examples of the BMW 3 Series have been sold around the world to date, with the current, seventh model generation now accounting for almost three million of these. Recent figures showed the BMW 3 Series to be the market leader in the premium segment of the midsize class in China, Europe and the USA. As things stand, one in every eight vehicles delivered by the brand worldwide is a 3 Series and in some markets, 3 Series accounts for 25 – 35 per cent of total BMW sales. 

An unwavering commitment to carbon footprint reduction.

Highly efficient drive systems, intelligent lightweight design and optimised aerodynamic attributes are key contributors to the fine balance between driving pleasure and low fuel consumption and emissions struck by the new BMW 3 Series. The 48V mild hybrid technology used in certain models both sharpens power delivery and enhances efficiency. The bonnet, front side panels, engine subframe, front spring struts and numerous chassis components are all made from aluminium. The proportion of secondary raw materials used in cast aluminium parts for the BMW 3 Series is around 50 per cent. And the aluminium wheel rims offered for the Saloon and Touring are made up of as much as around 70 per cent recycled aluminium.

The externally procured electricity used in production of the new BMW 3 Series at BMW Group Plant Munich is generated from renewable sources. The BMW 3 Series also plays its part in helping the BMW Group to meet its exacting CO₂ targets by consistently increasing vehicle efficiency. The BMW Group has set itself the goal of cutting life-cycle CO₂ emissions per vehicle by at least 40 per cent by 2030 compared to 2019. By 2050 at the latest, the company is aiming for net zero in terms of CO₂e emissions throughout the value chain.

The BMW Group continued the ongoing reduction in its fleet CO₂ emissions across the European car markets in 2023. The company posted a provisional figure of 102.1 grams per kilometre in the WLTP cycle – 20 per cent below the target of 128.5 g/km set by the European Union.

 
Exterior design, interior and equipment. Progressive aura, refined ambience.

More than ever, sporting elegance and modernity define the design of the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring. Their driving pleasure-focused character is expressed in clear lines and generously sculpted surfaces, while the sophisticated design of the BMW kidney grille and twin circular headlights – both signature brand features – gives the front end an unmistakable appearance. Eye-catching front and rear aprons underscore the cars’ dynamic profile, which can be further accentuated by specifying choosing M Sport model trim or selecting the optional M Sport Pro package.

The BMW 3 Series can now also be ordered with new exterior paint finishes and light-alloy wheels to add an extra touch of individualisation. In the interior, the progressive cockpit design featuring the BMW Curved Display is further enhanced by new steering wheels, visual modifications for the instrument panel and modernised decorative elements. The new M Performtex seat surface is included as standard on M Sport models and above.

Fresh design updates enhance the sporting elegance of the exterior.

The new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring are available in two solid and seven metallic paint finishes, with Arctic Race Blue metallic and Fire Red metallic both new additions to the colour palette.

BMW 3 Series models ordered in M Sport will be available with new 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design, giving their side view an even more dynamic appearance. Customers can order these wheels in either a Jet Black finish or a bi-colour variant. Meanwhile, the BMW Individual range for the Saloon and Touring models also includes new 19-inch light-alloy wheels in Y-spoke design and a bi-colour finish. All the new light-alloy wheels are fitted with mixed-size tyres.

Progressive cockpit with new sports leather steering wheels.

Advanced new features have also been introduced in the interior of the Saloon and Touring models, giving the cockpit a clean and pared-back look. Newly designed steering wheels add further intensity to the driving experience, while the optional Luxury instrument panel in Sensatec has a further refined surface structure and decorative stitching in a contrasting colour.

The latest-generation steering wheels in the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring stand out with their modern and sporty design. Both models come as standard with a fundamentally redesigned sports leather steering wheel with a polygonal rim in two-spoke design. The M Sport models bring a new M leather steering wheel with three spokes, a flat-bottomed rim and a discreet centre marking in the 12 o’clock position. Both of the newly designed steering wheels have illuminated multifunction buttons and gearshift paddles. Fitted as standard, the paddles enable swift manual interventions in the gear selection process and underscore the sporting profile of the new BMW 3 Series.

Digital climate control, selectable light moods.

The introduction of the latest-generation BMW iDrive with QuickSelect based on BMW Operating System 8.5 in the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring also brings optimised operation of the ventilation and climate control functions. Temperature selection, intensity of ventilation, seat heating and – if specified – steering wheel heating can now be adjusted on the BMW Curved Display or by voice command with the help of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. New adjustment controls for the air vent grilles in the centre of the instrument panel and on the driver’s and front passenger side of the cockpit allow the intensity and direction of airflow to be adjusted using rotating and tilting movements.

The interior lighting now includes cascade lighting integrated into the trim around the central seam vents as standard. It can be adjusted for colour and brightness according to personal preference, with users able to select from nine colour worlds. Their choice of colour and brightness settings are stored as part of their profile. If the optional ambient lighting (standard in the M Performance models) is specified, the individually adjustable light mood also extends to the front footwells, the storage compartment in the front section of the centre console and the contour lines of the door panel trims. The functionality of the interior lighting also includes an atmospheric Welcome and Goodbye Animation and light signals indicating an incoming phone call and optionally also an open door.

New seat surfaces in M Performtex.

As an alternative to the black cloth seat surfaces fitted as standard in Sport models, the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring can also be ordered with sport seats in Sensatec perforated. These are available in Black, Tacora Red or Cognac. The optional Vernasca leather trim is now offered in four colour variants.

The black surfaces of the sport seats in new M Performtex trim embody progressive sporting appeal. They are included as standard for M Sport models and both M340i derivatives. This innovative covering combines high material quality and a sporty design with low weight and a sustainability-optimised production method. M Sport and M340i models can also be ordered with sport seats and M sport seats in Vernasca leather with black surfaces and blue contrast quilting.

New interior trim elements, exclusive accents with CraftedClarity.

Extensive revisions have also been made to the range of interior trim elements. Dark Graphite matt comes as standard in the new BMW 3 Series, while Fineline Light open-pored and Grey Blue Ash open-pored fine-wood trim, plus the Carbon Fibre and Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite variants, can all be found on the options list.

Customers can now specify CraftedClarity glass applications – another new addition to the options list – which gives the gear selector lever, BMW iDrive Controller and Start/Stop button a particular air of exclusivity, both visually and in how they feel to the touch.

Extensive standard equipment, high-quality options.

Standard specification for the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring in Sport trim includes 17-inch (plug-in-hybrid models: 18-inch) light-alloy wheels, M High-gloss Shadow Line, a rear-view mirror with automatic anti-dazzle function and the Parking Assistant which includes Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors at the front and rear. Three-zone automatic climate control and BMW Live Cockpit Plus with the BMW Curved Display including BMW Maps navigation system are also fitted as standard.

The Touring model comes as standard with automatic tailgate operation and a 40 : 20 : 40 split/folding rear seat backrest, which is available as an option for the Saloon. Among the highlights on the list of individual options allowing customers to adapt the interior to their requirements and tastes are – alongside sport seats and ambient lighting – the Harman Kardon surround sound system, an electrically operated glass roof for the Saloon and a panoramic glass sunroof for the Touring model.

Powertrain and driving experience. Greater electric range for plug-in-hybrid models and improved ride comfort.

The BMW 3 Series Saloon and Touring models are each offered in Ireland with a choice of three petrol engines featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology – including the exceptionally powerful six- cylinder in-line unit for the M340i models. All new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring models come equipped with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as standard, complete with shift paddles on the steering wheel for quick manual interventions in the gear selection process.

The engines available for the BMW 3 Series in Ireland produce outputs ranging from 184 hp up to the range topping M340i xDrive, with its six-cylinder in-line petrol engine producing 374 hp. The six-cylinder in-line petrol unit comes with mild hybrid technology for more dynamic power delivery and greater efficiency, with the 48V starter generator putting an extra 11 hp on tap.

New high-voltage battery for plug-in-hybrid models.

The plug-in hybrid BMW 330e Saloon and BMW 330e Touring models take electrification a step further, with drive technology comprising a four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, which together generate a combined system output of 292 hp.

These latest plug-in-hybrid BMW 3 Series models boast even greater efficiency and a considerably longer electric range. This has been made possible by the switch to a new high- voltage battery with 19.5 kWh of usable energy. The product of fifth- generation BMW eDrive technology, it has a much higher energy density than the battery previously fitted in BMW 3 Series plug-in-hybrid models.

The new BMW Gen5 high-voltage battery represents a leap forward, bringing an improvement in all the relevant technical statistics. The high energy density at both cell and battery pack level combines with higher voltages to bring about a major increase in system efficiency. Although the high-voltage battery’s usable energy has nearly doubled, the amount of space in the interior and load compartment remains unchanged, as does fuel tank capacity.

These latest advances in battery technology open up greater scope for experiencing pure-electric driving pleasure in a BMW 3 Series, with the new BMW 330e Saloon offering electric range figures of 85 – 101 km, and the new BMW 330e Touring offering 83 – 91 km. This allows drivers to complete not only urban journeys and the daily commute with zero local emissions, but longer trips too.

More advanced charging technology is also on hand to help drivers use all-electric drive power as extensively as possible. The new charging unit supports three-phase AC charging at up to 11 kW, the first time that such a high rate has been available for a plug-in hybrid from BMW. This enables the high-voltage battery to be fully recharged from empty in 2 hours 15 minutes.

Chassis offers an even better blend of sportiness and comfort.

Both the BMW 3 Series Saloon and Touring have always set the standard for driving dynamics in their respective segments, and now the chassis technology found within the new BMW 3 Series range also benefits from further development work. The blend of sporting flair and ride comfort for which the 3 Series is renowned has been further refined across all model variants with a series of targeted updates. The stiffer mounting connecting the rear dampers to the body is just one of the measures used to achieve this.

Drivers will enjoy a notable increase in comfort across all driving situations – regardless of the road surface conditions and the selected driving mode – without any loss of the customary 3 Series dynamic prowess. This development work has also had a positive impact on acoustics when the car is handling peak forces triggered by the road surface. As a result, its handling has even greater overall precision, composure and controllability. The force needed to turn the steering wheel has been reduced in Comfort mode to achieve superior steering comfort in everyday driving.

The M Sport suspension is included as standard on M Sport models, with the Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers and variable sport steering is available as an option.

Advanced assistance systems for driving and parking.

A wide selection of assistance systems enhance comfort and safety when driving and parking in the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring. The front collision warning system with brake intervention, Cruise Control with brake function and the new Intelligent Speed Assistance function are some of the features that come as standard. The standout optional extra is Driving Assistant Professional, available as part of the Technology package and comprising the Steering and Lane Control Assistant and Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, plus automatic Speed Limit Assist, route speed control, traffic light recognition, the Evasion Assistant, Crossroads Warning with city braking function, Wrong-way Warning and Front Crossing Traffic Warning.

Besides Park Distance Control, the standard Parking Assistant also enables automated manoeuvring into and out of parking spaces, as well as featuring a Reversing Assist Camera and the Reversing Assistant. There is also the option of the Parking Assistant Plus with Surround View and Remote 3D View functions.

 
M340i models offer a powerful and distinctive character.

The sporting character of the new BMW 3 Series can be experienced in a highly concentrated format with the range-topping M340i models from BMW M GmbH. Featuring powerful six-cylinder in-line engines, a bespoke chassis set-up and signature M design cues both inside and out, the distinctive personality of these elite sporting models clearly shines through in both the driving experience and their looks. And there is now a new steering wheel and new seat upholstery to freshen up the cockpit.

M340i models feature a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine with 3.0 litre displacement and M-typical performance attributes. This engine’s healthy appetite for revs and instantaneous power delivery are the result of the latest M TwinPower Turbo technology and 48V mild hybrid technology, with an output of 11 hp which produces an electric boost effect. The straight-six power units are paired with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with an ultra-sharp shift action and the BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system is also on hand as standard to enhance agility and traction.

The six-cylinder in-line petrol engine in the BMW M340i xDrive Saloon and BMW M340i xDrive Touring generates maximum output of 374 hp and peak torque of 500 Nm. M Sport suspension with variable sport steering, the M Sport differential and M Sport brakes are also included as standard to deliver the blend of dynamic longitudinal and lateral performance, precision and exhilaration at the wheel for which M models are renowned.

Individual look with M-specific design features.

The performance capabilities of these top models are clearly flagged by M-specific design features crafted to meet technical requirements in terms of aerodynamics and cooling air supply. These include the large air intakes in the front apron, along with the M exterior mirror caps in Black high-gloss and the rear apron with its prominently styled diffuser. The BMW M340i xDrive Saloon also sports a body-coloured M rear spoiler.

A mesh-design BMW kidney grille, exclusive 18-inch M light-alloy wheels and trapezoidal exhaust tailpipe trim further add to the individual appearance of the range-topping models. The M Sport Pro pack is also available for these models.

Modern sports car ambience in the cabin.

Inside the M Performance models, M-specific equipment details help to deliver a focused driving experience in a modern sports car ambience. Black sport seats in the new M Performtex upholstery are now fitted as standard, while there is also the option of M Sport seats covered in Vernasca leather that come in Black with blue contrast quilting.

A new version of the M leather steering wheel dials up the intensity of the performance experience with its flat-bottomed rim, red centre marker and contrast stitching in BMW M GmbH colours. Interior trim strips in the new Aluminium fine-brushed finish, M door sill trim, M pedals, an M driver’s footrest and M-specific graphics for the BMW Curved Display are further standard features that help to imbue the flagship sporting models with their distinctive personality.

The new BMW Operating System 8.5 and innovative digital services.

The latest version of the BMW iDrive display and control/operation system with QuickSelect is fitted in the new edition of the BMW 3 Series Saloon and BMW 3 Series Touring, enabling vehicle functions to be controlled intuitively and providing access to digital services. It is now based on BMW Operating System 8.5 and features a new-look home screen and QuickSelect rapid-access tech, bringing an improved menu structure that takes its cue from consumer electronics devices.

Working in tandem with the BMW Curved Display and BMW Personal Assistant, the new BMW iDrive is geared towards touch and natural voice control. The climate control functions, including the seat heating and – if fitted – the steering wheel heating, are also now controlled digitally.

BMW iDrive with QuickSelect allows functions to be selected directly from the home screen with rapid-access tech.

The BMW iDrive home screen now continuously displays the navigation system’s map view in a large format or another individually selectable view. The system’s QuickSelect functionality also paves the way for a flatter menu structure, enabling the driver to select the desired function directly from the home screen without any need to enter submenus.

On the driver’s side of the control display, there is a bar of widgets for accessing numerous functions, including media or mobile phone, which can be navigated by swiping vertically. Swiping a widget horizontally displays additional related information and settings options. The widget bar can be customised by installing new widgets, removing existing ones or changing their arrangement.

The home icon at the lower edge of the control display makes it possible to return to the home screen from any application with a simple tap. Icons for direct access to the climate control menu, All Apps menu and, if activated, Apple CarPlay^® and Android Auto^TM can also now be found next to the home icon.

Enhanced navigation with BMW Maps and Augmented View.

The BMW Maps navigation system forming part of the standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus in the new 3 Series range makes it easier to input destinations and can offer additional information while driving. Further new features include better usability of filters, a flatter menu structure with touch buttons shown directly on the map view and proactive route recommendations.

The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional adds the BMW Head-Up Display and also the new Augmented View function. This supplements the navigation system’s map display by showing a live video stream of the driver’s view on the information display or control display and augmenting it with contextual real-time information. For example, at confusing junctions an animated directional arrow is integrated into the video image to help the driver take the correct turn-off for the planned route.

Individual user experience with the BMW ID and My BMW App.

The arrival of BMW Operating System 8.5 makes it even easier to personalise the user experience in the BMW 3 Series by simplifying the process for linking the vehicle with the driver’s BMW ID and My BMW App. Customers initially sign in to the vehicle with their BMW ID by scanning a QR code with their smartphone and the personal user profile is then imported automatically. Synchronisable settings are loaded and the key detected in the vehicle is associated with the BMW ID.

At the same time, the vehicle is added to the My BMW App – the universal interface that serves as a gateway to BMW’s digital ecosystem. It provides information on the vehicle’s status, its remaining range and any servicing and maintenance requirements. Depending on the car’s specification, it also enables access to various remote functions, such as locating the vehicle or locking and unlocking the doors. The optional Remote 3D View function gives drivers the ability to call up a three- dimensional live image of their vehicle’s immediate vicinity on their smartphone.

It is also possible to control the charging process for the plug-in-hybrid models from the My BMW App. This means that charging of the high- voltage battery can be started and stopped again either immediately or at a specified time and pre-conditioning can be activated remotely using a smartphone. The My BMW App also offers an overview of the charging history.

Drivers can also send destination addresses from their smartphone to the vehicle’s navigation system for route planning, or access the online BMW ConnectedDrive Store where upgrades and additional functions for the new BMW 3 Series can be initiated, purchased or extended over the air. The “My Trips” feature including Efficiency Trainer and monthly review provides the user with valuable data about distance travelled, consumption and average speed, as well as offering helpful tips for driving efficiently.

In addition to the vehicle’s built-in mobile SIM connectivity, customers can also use the Personal eSIM included in the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring as standard.

BMW M Performance Parts. Distinctive additions express the passion for motor sport.

In addition to the M Sport models and M Sport Pro package available from the factory, the BMW M Performance Parts range offer further scope for bringing even greater dynamic appeal to the appearance and driving properties of all the model variants.

These model-specific retrofit options from the Original BMW Accessories list were developed using the proven expertise of BMW M GmbH in motor sport. The aerodynamics and exterior components for the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and new BMW 3 Series Touring underscore the dynamic ability of the two models, as do the light-alloy wheels in the BMW M Performance Parts line-up.

Now the multi-faceted BMW M3 Saloon and BMW M3 Touring have further sharpened up their already impressive offerings, with a power hike of 20 hp for both model variants on sale in Ireland, new design and equipment offerings and the latest in-car digital features.

The newly designed headlights and steering wheel bring fresh touches to the exterior and interior, which are joined by new forged light-alloy wheels, new interior trim elements and the introduction of BMW Operating System 8.5 to underpin the latest generation of BMW iDrive. This latest stage on their development curve takes the race-car character and long-distance poise and composure of the high-performance premium midsize models to another new level for the driver and up to four passengers.

The six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology fitted in the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 8.6 – 8.4 l/100km; CO2 emissions, combined: 230 – 227 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO2 class: G) and new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 8.6 – 8.5 l/100km; CO2 emissions, combined: 235 – 233 g/km in the WLTP cycle, CO2 class: G), now produces an output of 530 hp, with the increased engine power channelled to all four wheels via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive will continue to be built at BMW Group Plant Munich. With production beginning in July 2024, the models will launch worldwide from this summer.

Traditional race-car feeling, distinctive characters.

Now in its sixth model generation, the BMW M3 is more powerful, more poised and assured, more advanced and more versatile than ever. The saloon is continuing a high-performance sports car bloodline that stretches back almost 40 years. The first generation of the BMW M3, unveiled in 1986, went on to become the most successful model in touring car racing worldwide. Then, as now, a car’s success in motor sport was accompanied by steadily increasing popularity for the production model and rare levels of excitement for its owner out on the road.

The race-car feeling associated with the BMW M3 – present at the driver’s fingertips over every mile of a journey – can be experienced in totally different ways with this latest generation. The BMW M3 Saloon now lines up alongside a Touring model, the BMW M3 Touring fusing the performance attributes for which this model series is renowned with additional practicality and expanded load-carrying ability. Folding down the rear seat backrests increases load compartment capacity from 500 to a maximum 1,510 litres. In Ireland, both models are available exclusively with the most powerful version of the six-cylinder in-line engine for the BMW M3/M4 and the M xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

With their distinct body concepts and specific qualities, the Saloon and Touring models occupy very different character spaces within the M3 range. One of their most important shared elements is their visually striking design with hallmark M features crafted precisely to meet the technical demands of cooling air supply and aerodynamic balance. The large, vertical BMW kidney grille with signature M double bars arranged horizontally, the powerfully sculpted wheel arches, the extended side skirts in contrasting Black high-gloss and the attachment parts for the front and rear aprons all provide clear pointers to the dynamic potential of the two models. The BMW M3 Saloon has a carbon-fibre roof as standard. The roof of the BMW M3 Touring, like its standard-fit roof rails, comes in black. It has a Gurney flap on the roof spoiler as an additional air-directing element.

Engine technology borrows from motor racing.

The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and the new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive feature a high-revving straight-six engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. The 3.0-litre unit stands out with its healthy appetite for revs into the highest reaches of the engine speed range and so produces the linear power delivery typical of high-performance models from BMW M GmbH.

Numerous elements adapted from race-car engine construction allow the power unit in the M3 to deliver an unmistakable performance experience on both road and track. The crankcase, with its sleeve-free, closed-deck construction, is extremely rigid and teams up with a forged crankshaft with lightweight design to unlock extremely high torque potential. The cylinder bores have a wire-arc sprayed iron coating. And the 3D-printed core for the cylinder head – another special M-specific feature – enables optimised routing of the coolant ducts that would be impossible to achieve using conventional metal casting methods.

Like the cooling system, the oil circuit is also designed to handle the particular challenges of track driving. A map-controlled oil pump ensures reliable oil supply even under extreme longitudinal and lateral acceleration.

The M TwinPower Turbo technology comprises of two mono-scroll turbochargers, each of which supplies compressed air to three cylinders. An indirect intercooler supplied by a low-temperature circuit plus specially designed compressors further enhance the turbocharger’s power output. The engine technology also includes High Precision Injection – which works at maximum pressure of 350 bar to ensure fine atomisation of fuel and therefore faster engine response – as well as VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing.

The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive develops an extra 20 hp verses the outgoing model thanks to optimised configuration of the digital engine control unit (DME). The six-cylinder in-line engine now generates maximum output of 530 hp (up from the previous 510 hp) at 6,250 rpm. The upgraded engine, which also serves as the basis for the unit powering the BMW M4 GT3, summons its peak torque of 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) between 2,750 and a now even higher 5,730 rpm. The result is even more ferocious, sustained power delivery that adds another layer of intensity to the performance experience – in particular when the driver is exploring the car’s dynamic limits on track – and enables impressive acceleration figures.

The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, and the new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive completes the same sprint in 3.6 seconds – only a touch longer, despite its higher kerb weight. The increased output of the two all-wheel-drive models is reflected in 0 to 199 km/h times that are 0.5 seconds quicker in each case - the saloon now records a time of 11.8 seconds, the Touring 12.4 seconds.

Both the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and the new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive have an electronically limited top speed of 249 km/h as standard. However, if the optional M Driver’s Package is specified, this figure rises to 289 km/h for the saloon and 280 km/h for the Touring model, allowing drivers to utilise the full potential of the powerful engines.

Model-specific composition of engine, transmission and chassis.

The standard eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic is tuned to support the performance characteristics of the engine at hand. Drivers favouring a sporty driving style will enjoy the benefits of the standard-fit gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, which allow the driver to make spontaneous interventions in the automatic transmission’s gear selection process as and when they decide. The driving experience can be tailored even more precisely to individual tastes by adapting the shift characteristics of the transmission according to requirements and the situation at hand using the Drivelogic button.

The rear-biased setup of the intelligent all-wheel-drive system further enhances the agility of the new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive. The system teams up with the Active M Differential at the rear axle – whose operation is also fully variable – to add to the signature M feeling when powering through corners. In addition to the default 4WD setting, the driver can also select 4WD Sport mode via the M Setup menu. When enabled, a higher proportion of drive power is sent to the rear wheels for even more agile handling. Switching off DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) also brings 2WD mode into play, which means power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels. This mode offers skilled drivers a pure-bred driving experience without interventions from the control systems.

The high torsional stiffness of the body structure and chassis mountings creates the ideal platform for impressive driving dynamics and instantaneous response to steering commands. As well as the bracing elements in the BMW M3 Saloon, the BMW M3 Touring has additional torsion struts in the rear. This extra strengthening measure gives the Touring body variant the tools it needs to display the combination of dynamism, agility and handling precision typically found in BMW M models.

The M-specific kinematics and elastokinematics of the double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle ensure a blend of extremely dynamic handling and finely judged comfort-focused qualities in everyday use and over longer journeys. The standard adaptive M suspension gives drivers the ability to adapt the responses of the electronically controlled dampers as they wish. Via the M Setup menu, drivers can select from three different settings to optimise the car’s handling in line with need and personal preference.

The package of chassis technology also includes M Servotronic steering and the integrated braking system, which works in conjunction with both the standard M Compound brakes and the optional M Carbon ceramic brakes. Both variants have six-piston fixed-calliper brakes at the front axle and single-piston floating-calliper brakes at the rear. As well as larger and more heat-resistant brake discs – which, thanks to their considerable ability to withstand fade, ensure uncompromising deceleration even under extreme conditions – the M Carbon ceramic brakes also stand out with their intelligent lightweight construction; they are around 14 kilograms lighter than the standard M Compound brakes. The reduction in unsprung mass plays a particularly significant role in delivering increased agility, enhanced handling, faster response and lower fuel consumption.

The M Compound system is fitted with blue brake callipers as standard, but these can also be specified in red or black as an option. The M Carbon ceramic brakes callipers have a Gold metallic painted finish. All variations feature a striking BMW M logo on the brake callipers at the front axle.

The DSC system ensures a form of driving pleasure unmatched by any rival. Indeed, with M Dynamic Mode it offers an ultra-sporty configuration that raises the system’s intervention thresholds when it comes to controlling braking inputs and delays the point at which it steps in to restrict engine output. This maximises the car’s performance dynamics with DSC switched on. The system can also be fully deactivated (DSC off).

M Traction Control function, a standard feature on both Saloon and Touring models, features slip control tech that can be adjusted through ten stages according to the driver’s preferences or the road conditions at hand. It allows the control system inputs to be reduced in stages so that the driver can approach the physical limits in race action on the track, for example. The M Laptimer and M Drift Analyser help experienced drivers improve their lap times and hone their drifting skills. The integrated application of all drivetrain and chassis systems was fine-tuned at locations including the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit, but it also ensures highly dynamic and at the same time precisely controllable handling in everyday driving.

Axle-specific wheel sizes, M forged light-alloy wheels with a new design.

All new BMW M3 model variants are fitted as standard with M forged light-alloy wheels in axle-specific rim sizes to the benefit of agility and handling. The new BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive feature Jetblack forged light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design, measuring 19-inches at the front axle and 20-inches at the rear axle. Plus, new forged M light-alloy wheels in 19-inch and 20-inch formats have been added to the extensive optional equipment roster for all model variants. These are now finished in the colour Silver for the first time, their bright, shiny surfaces ensuring a sporty yet also elegantly sophisticated appearance.

Extensive selection of assistance systems; M Mode button to call up personalised selection of functions.

The new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M3 Touring set new standards in their segment with their extensive range of standard and optional automated driving and parking systems. In order to provide a dynamic experience that is both appropriate for the situation at hand and fits the high-performance sports car brief, the interventions of the driver assistance systems can be adjusted using the M Mode button on the centre console. For example, in the optional TRACK setting conceived for use on race circuits, all comfort and safety systems are temporarily deactivated.

Standard specification for all model variants includes Park Distance Control with sensors at the front and rear, Cruise Control with brake function, front collision warning system with brake intervention, Lane Departure Warning including lane return with steering assistance, Speed Limit Info with no-overtaking indicator and Parking Assistant including Reversing Assistant. Among the items on the options list is Driving Assistant Professional, which adds functions such as the Steering and Lane Control Assistant with automatic Speed Limit Assist, Lane Keeping Assistant, traffic light detection and Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function.

Newly designed headlights and eye-catching details sharpen the cars’ visual character.

Newly designed LED headlights, which bring together low and high beam in a single module, bring fresh accents to the front end of the new BMW M3 Saloon and new BMW M3 Touring. Two elegantly sculpted, subtly arrow-shaped and vertically arranged LED units in each module serve as both side lights/daytime driving lights and turn signal indicators. The focused impression created by the light sources, whose inner workings are now structured in a particularly striking design, ensures a progressive appearance which is also adopted by the slim LED rear lights with L-shaped taillights.

Adaptive LED Headlights with non-dazzling matrix high beam are available as an option, which also include the cornering light function, urban lights, and blue inlays inside the headlights, indicating the presence of this sophisticated light technology. M Shadowline lights with dark inner accents are also available for cars specified with the Adaptive LED Headlights. The model badge on the boot lid of the Competition models is now accented by an elegant silver-coloured surround.

New steering wheels and interior trim elements for the M-specific sports car cockpit.

Open the door to these new high-performance models and the stripped-back design of the interior will provide an instant hit of motor sport DNA. A new steering wheel and controls, plus sophisticated materials for the instrument panel and interior trim elements heighten the sense of exclusivity inside the M-specific sports car cockpit.

The newly designed three-spoke M leather steering wheel with multifunction buttons and red centre marker in the 12 o’clock position now has a flat-bottomed rim and precisely modified spokes. Two M buttons for selecting individually configured vehicle setups and the gearshift paddles are fitted as standard to enable rapid interventions in the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission’s gear selection process. An M Alcantara steering wheel in the same design and with the same functionality is available as an option for the first time, and a heating function is available as an option for both steering wheel variants.

The M-specific cockpit design also includes a control panel on the centre console. The Setup button and M Mode button are located here along with the gearshift lever / selector lever, the red Start/Stop button and the BMW iDrive Controller. These can be used by the driver to configure their desired vehicle setup and activate cockpit display and driver assistance system functions tailored to the driving situation at hand.

High-quality, carefully crafted materials and M-specific design features in the interior create a modern and premium ambience with sporting flair. The interior trim elements in the instrument panel, control panel and cup holder cover now come as standard in Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite. , or optional M Carbon Fibre. M Carbon Fibre now additionally includes elements for the steering wheel and the gearshift paddles of the Competition models. The optional Sensatec instrument panel now has a further refined surface structure.

The standard M sport seats offer an array of electrically operated adjustment options to make it easier to find the perfect position behind the steering wheel. A memory function for the driver’s seat allows the driver to store their desired adjustment settings, while the head restraints feature illuminated model badging. Standard specification also includes seat heating for the driver and front passenger, while seat ventilation is available as an option. Available as alternatives to the standard Merino leather trim are Merino full-leather trim, BMW Individual Merino leather trim with extended features and BMW Individual Merino full-leather trim – each in a choice of four colours.

The optional M Carbon bucket seats provide an optimum, racing-car-like connection between driver and car. Fully electrically adjustable and heated, they fuse racing functionality with luxurious craftsmanship and excellent comfort over long distances. The use of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) in the seat surface and backrest elements, plus cut-outs in the side bolsters and below the head restraints enable a weight saving of 9.6 kilograms over the standard M sport seats.

BMW Curved Display and new BMW Operating System 8.5.

The BMW M3 Competition Saloon with M xDrive and the new BMW M3 Competition Touring with M xDrive also welcome the latest generation of the display and control/operation system BMW iDrive based on BMW Operating System 8.5. With the high-resolution BMW Curved Display angled towards the driver and upgraded BMW Personal Assistant, the interaction between driver and car is based squarely on operation using touch control and natural language. The fully digital screen grouping made up of a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display shows M-specific content. This includes additional information on the vehicle’s status and sharpens the driver’s focus on the road ahead. Also on the options list is the BMW Head-Up Display, which projects information relevant to driving – including a multi-coloured rpm dial, Shift Lights and M View – onto the windscreen, again in an M-specific style.

The M-specific graphics and content on the information display and control display are now joined by a new way of operating the standard-fitted automatic climate control system. The temperature and ventilation settings as well as the seat heating and – if specified – steering wheel heating can now be controlled either by touch using a special menu option in the lower area of the control display or by voice command. New adjustment controls for the air vent grilles in the centre of the instrument panel and on the driver’s and front passenger side of the cockpit allow the airflow direction to be adjusted using rotating and tilting movements.

In addition to the footwells, the storage compartment in the front section of the centre console and the door openers, the standard ambient lighting now also encompasses contour lighting integrated into the trim around the central seam vents. Nine colours in multiples grades of brightness allow customers to adjust the effect to their personal preferences. The functionality of the interior lighting also includes an atmospheric Welcome and Goodbye Animation and light signals indicating an open door or incoming phone call.

As well as the BMW Maps cloud-based navigation system, the standard-fitted BMW Live Cockpit Plus includes two USB ports for data transfer, a Wi-Fi interface and smartphone integration enabling the use of Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, while the optional telephony with wireless charging enables wireless charging of compatible smartphones. A HiFi speaker system with 10 speakers and a 205-watt amplifier is fitted as standard on both Saloon and Touring models.

Distinctive looks and higher-intensity performance with M Carbon exterior package, M Race Track package and BMW M Performance Parts.

An M Carbon exterior package specific to each of the new high-performance cars brings bespoke precision to their outward appeal. With inlays for the wide front air intakes and a rear diffuser with unique geometry for each model, plus exterior mirror caps and a rear spoiler made from CFRP for the BMW M3 Saloon, the M Carbon exterior package also brings fresh visual sharpness to the race-car character of the two models. The M Race Track package, which brings M Carbon ceramic brakes, M Carbon bucket seats for the driver and front passenger and Carbon Fibre interior trim elements, reduces vehicle weight by as much as 25 kilograms.

BMW M Performance Parts offer customers additional scope for tailoring the high-intensity driving experience and dynamic aura of the new high-performance sports cars to their personal tastes. The selection of model-specific retrofit options ranges from exterior components made from CFRP and M Performance forged wheels with centre lock to M Performance floor mats and M Performance steering wheel trim for customising the interior.

More dynamic than ever, featuring a wealth of digital innovations and all-electric drive for the first time, the eighth generation of the BMW 5 Series Saloon continues to stand for advanced technology combined with sporty, elegant design and hallmark driving pleasure.
The new generation of the world's most successful business saloon also intensifies its commitment to sustainability, significantly reducing its carbon footprint by 20 to 25 per cent in the supply chain, and up to 58 per cent across its life cycle compared to its predecessor.

The exterior design of the latest generation reinterprets the sporty elegance of a BMW 5 Series Saloon in the brand’s current design language. Its proportions make the character of the dynamic business saloon instantly recognisable. As a performance model from BMW M GmbH, the all-electric BMW i5 M60 xDrive comes as standard with specific exterior features that visually underline its outstanding sporting potential.

The road presence of the new BMW 5 Series Saloon is enhanced by its athletic proportions and the larger exterior measurements compared to its predecessor. The eight generation vehicle has grown in length by 97mm to 5,06mm, in width by 32mm to 1,900mm and in height by 36mm to 1,515mm. The wheelbase has been increased by 20mm to 2,995mm for improved seating comfort, especially in the rear.

In addition to a pure-electric drivetrain, the latest generation BMW 5 Series debuts several firsts for the iconic saloon. It is the first BMW in Ireland to feature Veganza upholstery as standard from launch, encompassing the seats, dashboard and door panels while the striking BMW Interaction Bar first seen in the BMW 7 Series is now incorporated in the new BMW 5 Series. Furthermore, the saloon is now available with a panoramic roof – the first time in the model’s history – and the digital experience is taken to a new high with cutting-edge additions of AI-driven servicing notifications and the introduction of in-car gaming.

Like all previous model generations, the new BMW 5 Series Saloon is manufactured at the BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. In 1973, the first vehicle manufactured at the plant was a first-generation BMW 5 Series Saloon.

The BMW 5 Series Saloon range will further expand in early 2024 with the introduction of the BMW 530e and BMW 550e xDrive plug-in hybrid models, which are expected to offer an electric range of 78 – 90kms (WLTP) and 86 – 100kms (WLTP) respectively. Also set to join the model family in spring 2024 is the next generation of the BMW 5 Series Touring, which will also be available with all-electric drive for the first time, as well as with plug-in hybrid drive and pure combustion engine drive.

Modern interpretation of classic signature styling
The front view of the new BMW 5 Series Saloon is characterised by a modern interpretation of the brand’s signature twin headlights and BMW kidney grille. The LED headlights show the hallmark four-eye face in a modern and reduced form. Daytime driving lights and turn indicators are generated by two nearly vertical LED elements arranged on the outside. The Adaptive LED Headlights incorporate both the cornering light and the Matrix High Beam including the glare-free High Beam Assist BMW Selective Beam. M Shadow Line lights with black trim for the inside of the headlight housings are standard on M Sport Pro models.

The new BMW 5 Series Saloon offers customers an appealing welcome and goodbye display. Among other things, the headlights and the light carpet projected from the vehicle sill are atmospherically orchestrated.

The BMW kidney grille, inspired by the “Sharknose” and projecting far forward, functions as the visual centre. With its wide surround and BMW Iconic Glow standard on M Sport Pro and i5 M60 xDrive models, the BMW kidney grille gives the 5 Series a distinctively sporty appeal.

Flowing lines enhance the sporty side profile of the traditional saloon design
The clear and reduced design language is also expressed in the side view of the BMW 5 Series Saloon. Its elongated proportions, long bonnet and almost upright BMW kidney grille are clearly visible. The sporty character of the Saloon’s typical three-box design is also expressed in the steeply sloping A-pillar, the gently flowing roof line towards the rear and the slightly sloping luggage compartment line.

The side profile has a pronounced athletic look thanks to a high shoulder line, powerfully modelled surfaces and two precisely drawn character lines. Black side skirts provide a visual contrast to the rest of the bodywork, while the door openers are integrated flush with the surface. The counter-swing at the base of the C-pillar, known as the Hofmeister kink, is highlighted by a graphic element with the number 5 embossed on the side window surround.

At the rear, the shoulder and roof lines flow harmoniously into the contours of the lights. The flat rear lights interpret the brand’s hallmark L-shape with modern appeal. Inside, four narrow, horizontally aligned LED strips generate the lighting functions, divided by an L-shaped chrome strip. Similar to the headlight units, strikingly designed LED units also function as daytime running lights.

Exclusive design features for BMW i5 M60 xDrive and M Sport Pro models
Individual design features give the BMW i5 M60 xDrive a striking look and emphasise its dynamic performance. A front apron with black surfaces in its centre and large air intakes, a BMW kidney grille with contour line lighting, horizontal slats and M logo, side skirts and exterior mirror caps finished in high-gloss black, a unique 20-inch M light alloy wheels and a rear apron with a pronounced diffuser insert signal the top-of-the-range model's sporty character. An M rear spoiler lip is also standard on M Sport and i5 M60 xDrive models.

M Sport Pro variants of the BMW 5 Series Saloon stand out with the illuminated BMW kidney grille with black surround, the dynamic light carpet, high-gloss black exterior mirror caps and a black-painted M rear spoiler. In addition, there are also the M Shadow Line lights for the front and rear and red-painted brake calipers.

Optimised aerodynamics deliver real-world range improvements
Combined with EfficientDynamics measures such as air flap control, an AirCurtain in the front apron, aerodynamic wheels and a smooth underbody, the new BMW 5 Series Saloon achieves an outstanding Cd value of 0.23.

The air flap control can increase the electric range of the new BMW i5 by up to 25kms, by only opening the cooling air intakes in the BMW kidney grille, the lower cooling air intake, and brake cooling ducts as required. The Air Curtains, meanwhile, direct the airflow from the front apron past the front wheels, thereby reducing turbulence at the wheel arch, increasing range by up to 2kms.

The light alloy wheels with optimised inserts combine optimum aerodynamics with low weight. Their design makes a significant contribution to reducing air resistance and increases the electric range by up to 9kms.

In the new BMW 5 Series Saloon, the underbody is closed off as far as possible thanks to the optimised panelling and air control elements, reducing air resistance. At the rear, the rear axle cover and aerodynamically shaped diffuser contribute to optimising the underbody airflow. These efforts can achieve an additional reduction in CO₂ emissions and increase the electric range by up to 9kms.

New EfficiencyCoach generates suggestions for more efficient and sustainable driving
With EfficientDynamics, the BMW Group has been developing technologies to increase the efficiency of its vehicles and reduce their emissions for many years. However, the driver is still a significant factor influencing efficiency. By driving economically, up to 25 percent of fuel or electrical energy can be saved. The new EfficiencyCoach in the My BMW app provides tips to make driving more efficient and sustainable. The assistant analyses the current consumption and compares it with the previous month as well as that of the community and makes suggestions for driving more economically.

Driving pleasure and exceptional comfort combined with innovative style
Generous space, modern functionality, a high level of acoustic comfort as well as high-quality, precisely processed materials, fine workmanship and advanced digital services characterise the new BMW 5 Series Saloon. The fully digital BMW Curved Display represents the heart of the interior redesign. Other innovations include the BMW Interaction Bar in the instrument panel and door area, My Modes for a customisable driving and interior experience, and the new gear selector switch on the centre console.

Fully digital BMW Curved Display with new graphic display and optimised touch operation
With its frameless glass surface slightly inclined towards the driver, the BMW Curved Display consists of a 12.3-inch Information Display behind the steering wheel and a Control Display with 14.9-inch screen, which merge into a single fully digital high-resolution display unit. The BMW iDrive experience, based on BMW Operating System 8.5, offers a new graphic display with a particularly clear start screen and “QuickSelect” access for simple and intuitive touch operation. The latest-generation operating system introduces new functionalities, including video on demand via YouTube for the driver and front passenger when stationary (SIM card reader and separate data plan required).

The advances in digitalisation make it possible to reduce the number of buttons used in the cockpit. They continue to be used only where they are the ideal solution for fast and intuitive operation. A large interior trim strip for the instrument panel highlights the BMW Curved Display and the BMW Interaction Bar. With an Aluminium Rhombicle Dark Silver finish, it is also optionally available in the Carbon Fibre variant with high-gloss silver threads and in several fine wood finishes.

In-car gaming with AirConsole premieres in the new BMW 5 Series
In cooperation with gaming platform AirConsole, BMW presents a new form of in-car gaming in the new BMW 5 Series Saloon. The driver and passengers can play casual games while the vehicle is stationary, for example to bridge waiting times while charging the high-voltage battery of the BMW i5.

Setting up the experience with AirConsole is seamless. Players’ smartphones act as a controller, with the connection established by scanning a QR code on the Curved Display. With instant delivery of games over-the-air, players can start playing right away. The selection of games at launch includes racing, sports, quiz, simulation, strategy, jump-and-run and puzzle games. The portfolio of 20 or so titles is continuously expanding and includes "Go Kart Go", "Golazo", "Music Guess" and "Overcooked".

BMW Interaction Bar with touch function and lighting effects
The BMW Interaction Bar was first presented in the new BMW 7 Series and is now also available in the new BMW 5 Series Saloon. The backlit unit with crystalline surface extends below the trim strip across the width of the instrument panel far into the door panels and includes touch-sensitive control panels for controlling ventilation and air conditioning. Part of the standard Ambient Light, its lighting design is based on the selected My Modes and can be customised. Getting in and out of the car is accompanied by a welcome and farewell scenario, staged with lights on the BMW Interaction Bar. The BMW Interaction Bar interacts with the passengers in the form of dynamic light animation and indicates incoming telephone calls, among other things. It also indicates to the driver and front passenger when it is safe to get out the car thanks to the Safe Exit function.

Fresh designs for steering wheel and centre console control panel
The newly designed steering wheel has three spokes and a rim that is flattened in the lower section, with contrast stitching in BMW M GmbH colours. With BMW i5 M60 xDrive, a red centre marker on the steering wheel emphasises its sporty character. A steering wheel heating function is offered on all models as part of the Comfort Pack.

The control panel on the centre console has also been redesigned. The iDrive Controller, new gear selector switch, start/stop button, My Modes buttons, volume control and other buttons are clearly arranged on the centre panel. With the CraftedClarity option, crystal glass applications for selected controls add a luxurious touch. A wireless charging tray is included as standard on all models.

The first BMW to Veganza upholstery as standard from launch
As standard, the new BMW 5 Series Saloon is the first model in Ireland to feature Veganza upholstery from the initial launch. The new BMW 5 Series Saloon includes black seat surfaces in the leather­like Veganza finish, with the material also extending to the dashboard and door panels. Optionally, the leather-free surface material is also available with a decorative perforation and in three other colours. Further optional equipment includes BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery in several bicolour variants.

The newly designed seats offer increased comfort and optimised adjustment options. Sport seats are included as standard and incorporate electric height and inclination adjustment as well as a heating function. Active seat ventilation is available as part of the Comfort Plus Pack.

The backrests of the outer rear seats extend far into the door areas, increasing comfort. The rear seats can be heated as part of the Comfort Plus Pack. The entire rear seat backrest is now divided as standard in the ratio 40:20:40. The luggage compartment of the new BMW 5 Series Saloon has a total storage volume of up to 520 litres (490 litres on i5 models). Despite their drive units being integrated in the rear axle, the all-electric BMW i5 models have a luggage compartment volume that is almost equivalent to the other variants.

The Travel & Comfort System, available as part of the Comfort Pack, adds ambient lighting elements to the backs of the front seats to emphasise the atmospheric ambience.

The standard M Sport specification includes an anthracite-coloured roof lining, while M Sport Pro models also feature M seat belts.

Enhanced air conditioning with almost invisible seam vents, heat pump technology in the BMW i5
The standard equipment of the new BMW 5 Series Saloon includes automatic air conditioning with an extended range of features. In the instrument panel area, seam vents are used instead of conventional air vents, positioned at the height of the BMW Interaction Bar.

To maximise range, BMW i5 models have energy-efficient heat pump technology as standard. A 4-zone automatic air conditioning system with separate control panel in the rear, air vents in the B-pillars and nano particle filters is available as part of the Comfort Plus Pack. For the first time, the air conditioning makes it possible to separately regulate the temperature in the front footwells. A second solar sensor is used to regulate the temperature in the rear. Preheating is standard equipment in the BMW i5.

A first for the BMW 5 Series: panoramic glass roof now available
The optional panoramic glass roof is a first for the new BMW 5 Series Saloon. It covers almost the entire roof surface, extends without interruption from just behind the windscreen to almost the rear window. With a length of 841mm and a width of 818mm, the viewing area is almost 90 percent larger than the sunroof of the predecessor. An optional interior sunblind provides shading of the interior.

High payload and trailer load for all versions, strengthening suitability for long-distance travel
The long-distance capabilities of the new BMW 5 Series Saloon are underlined by the high payloads it can carry. For example, the total payload of the BMW i5 eDrive40 Saloon is 610kg. An electrically-deployed towbar is available as an option for all models, with a towing capacity up to 2,000kg.

Exceptional sound experience via high-quality audio systems and BMW IconicSounds Electric
The standard Harman Kardon Surround Sound System provides a high-level sound experience with 12 speakers and a 205 watt amplifier. With 18 speakers and amplifier output boosted to 655 watts, the optional Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System guarantees an outstanding acoustic experience. A seven-channel digital amplifier creates a clear sound experience in all seats. Illuminated metal panels for the loudspeakers in the doors emphasise the exclusive character of the sound system.

Two USB-C ports are fitted as standard in the front of the new BMW 5 Series Saloon and two further USB-C ports in the back. Optionally, a further USB-C port is available in the backrests of the front seats.

The Travel & Comfort System is also available to provide customised entertainment in the rear. With plug-in couplings installed in the backrests of the front seats for attaching multifunction holders from the Original BMW Accessories range, tablets and other devices can be attached to serve as entertainment screens. The system includes mounting options for clothes hangers and fold-out tables.

A special soundscape can be experienced in the new BMW i5. The BMW IconicSounds Electric accompany every movement of the accelerator pedal. Depending on the My Mode selected, the sound is staged in different ways, with SPORT mode particularly powerful. The BMW IconicSounds Electric were developed in collaboration with renowned film music composer Hans Zimmer.

Introduction of all-electric powertrains to the BMW 5 Series for the first time
The new BMW 5 Series Saloon is to be offered for the first time with the choice of all-electric models. The new BMW i5 is being launched with two model variants: the BMW i5 M60 xDrive performance model is positioned at the top of the model series. Both it and the BMW i5 eDrive40, are equipped with enhanced fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology.

BMW i5 eDrive40: Advanced BMW eDrive technology, traditional rear-wheel drive
The BMW i5 eDrive40 combines advanced BMW eDrive technology with traditional rear-wheel drive. The electric motor is located directly in the rear axle and generates maximum output of 340hp and maximum torque of 400Nm or 430Nm with the Sport Boost or Launch Control function. The zero-to-100km/h sprint is covered in 6.0 seconds, while maximum speed is electronically limited to 193km/h. Its combined power consumption is between 19.5 and 15.9kWh per 100kms.

BMW i5 M60 xDrive: All-electric driving pleasure at the top of the model range
The BMW i5 M60 xDrive is the new top model and combines a 601hp (with M Sport Boost or M Launch Control) electric drive with hallmark M performance and specific design features. Two highly integrated drive units on the front and rear axles form the electric all-wheel drive system. The rear motor generates 340hp, while the front motor produces 261hp. The system torque generated by both motors is 795Nm or 820Nm when M Sport Boost or M Launch Control is activated. This enables the new BMW i5 M60 to accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 3.8 seconds. The maximum speed is electronically limited to 230km/h. Its combined power consumption is 20.6 to 18.2kWh per 100kms.

The BMW i5 M60 xDrive and BMW i5 eDrive40 feature a shift paddle marked with "Boost" near the left steering wheel spoke. If the paddle is pulled for more than 0.8 seconds, a Sport Boost indicator appears on the Information Display, and maximum acceleration is triggered by the accelerator pedal. At the same time, the drive sound changes to that assigned to My Mode SPORT.

High-voltage battery with compact design and high energy content
The high-voltage battery used in the all-electric variants is derived from the latest fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology. It is composed of four modules with 72 battery cells each and three modules with 12 cells each. The battery has a particularly flat design and is fitted in the underbody of the BMW i5 to save space. It provides a usable energy content of 81.2 kWh. The BMW i5 M60 xDrive has a range of 455 – 516kms (WLTP), while the BMW i5 eDrive40 has a range of 477 - 582 kms.

The latest version of adaptive recuperation helps to conserve or recover energy. The system can use navigation data and information from the driver assistance systems to adjust how much power is recuperated according to traffic levels. The driver can also select high, medium or low braking energy recovery in the BMW iDrive menu. Low recuperation triggers the coasting function – the BMW i5 rolls along without drive torque as soon as the accelerator is released. Efficiency is further enhanced by combining the heat pump technology for the interior and the drive units and battery.

My Mode EFFICIENT with new MAX RANGE function
When driving in My Mode EFFICIENT, the range of the BMW i5 can be increased by up to 25 percent by limiting drive power and top speed, combined with reduced comfort functions.

The MAX RANGE mode was designed for situations where a planned charging stop is no longer possible. The maximum speed is limited to 90km/h; the air conditioning is deactivated; rear window heating is reduced; steering wheel and seat heating and ventilation are deactivated. The range gained in this way is shown on the Control Display, the speed and power scales are adjusted on the Information Display and the additional range is taken into account in the range forecast.

Combined Charging Unit and intelligent charging software minimise charging time
The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) of the BMW i5 enables AC charging up to 11kW as standard and optionally up to 22kW (standard on the i5 M60 xDrive). The battery can be charged with DC up to 205kW. This allows the charge level to be raised from 10 to 80 percent in around 30 minutes. In addition, the range can be increased by up to 156kms in 10 minutes at a DC fast-charging station when starting with a charge level of 10 percent.

Charging efficiency is optimised using the latest version of the charging software. The system continuously adjusts the charging power instead of delivering a "staircase curve" thereby making charging times even shorter. The waste heat generated by the electric motors is used to control the temperature of the battery in the BMW i5 for the first time, significantly reducing the energy required to preheat the battery on the way to a charging station.
 
When the navigation system is active, the battery is automatically pre-conditioned before a planned charging stop. Pre-conditioning can be manually activated at any time. In addition, it is possible to save charging settings for individual charging points. They are then automatically restored on the next visit. The cloud-based navigation system in the BMW i5 calculates charge-optimised routes and will become even more precise as time passes.

Four-cylinder petrol engine with 48-volt mild hybrid technology
The four-cylinder petrol engine is equipped with 48-volt mild hybrid technology that uses a crankshaft starter generator to produce a spontaneous response to every accelerator movement, both when starting off and during acceleration, and increases comfort when using the Auto Start Stop function. The energy required is stored in a 48-volt battery located under the luggage compartment. It is charged by means of recuperation during overrun and braking. In addition to the electric motor, the 48-volt battery also supplies the vehicle’s 12-volt electrical system via a voltage converter.

The four-cylinder petrol engine in the new BMW 5 Series Saloon comes from a new modular generation that uses the Miller combustion process, which shortens the opening times of the intake valves. It also features redesigned intake ducts and combustion chambers, as well as innovations in camshaft control, fuel injection, the ignition system and exhaust gas routing.

In addition, the latest version of the fully variable valve control VALVETRONIC is able to stop gas exchange when required, thus reducing the engine’s frictional torque in overrun phases by about two thirds. This leads to braking energy being more intensively recuperated.

In the new BMW 520i Saloon, this engine produces 190hp and 310 Nm of torque, increased to 208hp and 330Nm with the support of the 48-volt mild hybrid technology – 24hp and 40Nm more than its predecessor. The new BMW 520i Saloon takes 7.5 seconds to accelerate from zero to 100km/h.

New 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with Sport Boost function as standard
A new 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission is standard, with shift paddles on the steering wheel and a Sport Boost function activated by the left paddle. The new transmission includes the electric motor and the 48-volt mild hybrid power electronics in its housing. In addition, the internal efficiency of the transmission has been optimised, as have vibration damping and torsional irregularity decoupling. A new electric oil pump and a torsional damper system increase efficiency and shift comfort.

Chassis and steering honed for sporting precision and optimum refinement
Both the double-wishbone front axle and the five-link rear axle of the new BMW 5 Series Saloon have undergone extensive development. To optimise the acoustic properties, the front axle support received an elastic steering gear mount. In the BMW i5 M60 xDrive, noise from the electric drive is insulated by large powertrain mounts, while the all-wheel drive variants feature an aluminium stiffening plate under the front axle support. The rear axle support combines low weight with high rigidity. The vibration damping and acoustic insulation of the BMW i5’s electric drive unit are optimised by a large bearing and specific rubber mounts for the rear axle support.
 
All new BMW 5 Series Saloons are equipped with the latest electromechanical power steering as standard. The standard sport steering now includes a direct and steering angle-dependent ratio. Its range of functions also includes the Servotronic speed-related power assistance.

The advanced Integral Active Steering is also available for the new BMW 5 Series Saloon as part of the Adaptive Suspension Professional. Depending on vehicle speed, the rear wheels are turned either against the front wheels or in the same direction by up to 2.5°. At low speeds this aids manoeuvring in and out of parking spaces, while the turning circle is reduced by more than 0.6 metres to 11.7 metres.

Lowered M sport suspension as standard, stroke-dependent dampers for the BMW i5
The new BMW 5 Series Saloon is equipped with M sport suspension as standard. It includes a firmer tuning of the springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, combined with a lowering of the vehicle by 8mm.

The BMW i5 also features stroke-dependent control of the dampers on both axles. The additional hydraulic damping calms the body when compensating for vibrations caused by uneven road surfaces. The damping is spring-travel-dependent, so that vibrations are initially damped linearly and then additionally absorbed by a second piston in the event of greater deflection. This prevents excessive bouncing or rocking of the body when driving over large bumps.

The BMW i5 is also equipped with rear-axle self-levelling air suspension as standard. This ensures optimum vehicle height, even when heavily loaded. The air supply to the suspension is regulated individually for each wheel and can compensate for uneven loading.

Adaptive Suspension Professional
The Adaptive Suspension Professional with electronically controlled dampers is optionally available across the range. Infinitely adjustable valves enable wheel-specific regulation of the damper forces. The rebound and compression stages of the dampers are infinitely variable. Using My Modes, two different maps can be activated for the dampers. The damper control takes into account longitudinal and lateral acceleration, speed, steering angle, and body and front wheel acceleration, in order to activate the required damper force within a few milliseconds.

Adaptive M Suspension Professional with additional Active Roll Stabilisation offered exclusively on the BMW i5 M60 xDrive
The Adaptive M Suspension Professional with additional Active Roll Stabilisation is offered exclusively on the BMW i5 M60 xDrive as standard. This system uses the new control logic to optimise sportiness and comfort and the damper forces are controlled using M specific characteristics.

The Active Roll Stabilisation deploys 48-volt electric swivel motors to ensure particularly fast and precise compensation of lateral inclination forces. Active Roll Stabilisation benefits agility and driving precision, while at the same time enabling a dynamic steering response by providing better roll support. It also increases comfort when driving straight ahead by decoupling the anti-roll bar, reducing body roll caused by road unevenness. The Active Roll Comfort function ensures that the system not only reduces body roll, but also builds up a counter-torque to keep the body horizontal, especially when the road surface is uneven on one side. In this way, the driver and passengers hardly notice any bumps in the road.

Directly controlled wheel slip limitation for fast and precisely optimised traction
The new BMW 5 Series Saloon now features directly controlled wheel slip limitation to deliver maximum agility and control in demanding driving situations. With this system, the traction control is integrated into the engine control unit. This eliminates the long signal paths to the control unit of the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), so that the control interventions take place up to 10 times faster.

Larger light alloy wheels introduced across the range
The standard equipment of the new BMW 5 Series Saloon includes 19-inch light alloy wheels on M Sport models, while M Sport Pro models receive 20-inch light alloy wheels as standard. The enlarged diameter over its predecessor gives the vehicle an even more sporty presence. 20-inch and 21-inch light alloy wheels are available ex-works and in the genuine BMW accessories range. The range also includes the option of aerodynamic wheels, whose design and construction methods reduce both weight and air resistance.

In addition to the tyre pressure display, the new BMW 5 Series Saloon features a digital tyre condition monitoring system as standard, making it possible to detect tyre issues earlier. This is made possible by a diagnostic function using artificial intelligence (AI) in the BMW backend. A loss of pressure is reported to the driver by the My BMW app and, depending on the market, also in the vehicle, together with a recommendation for taking action. Predictions allow a forecast to be made of the remaining life of the tyres until the recommended minimum tread depth is reached.

Driving Assistant Professional
Driving Assistant Professional, available as part of the Tech Pack Plus, includes Distance Control with Stop & Go function and Steering and Lane Control Assistant. The combination of these two features enhances the level 2 automated driving experience.

Further components of the system are Side Collision Protection with active return, Road Priority Warning and Wrong-way Warning, the front and rear Crossing-traffic Warning with braking function as well as the Emergency Lane Assistant and Emergency Stop Assistant functions in selected countries.

The central area of the cockpit display is reserved for an augmented reality representation of the vehicle and its surroundings. Camera images are combined with additional graphics and information to provide the driver with a precise overview of the surroundings.

Launching initially in Germany, the United States and Canada, this package also includes the new version of the Active Lane Change Assistant, available for the first time in the new BMW 5 Series Saloon. This system can automatically carry out lane change manoeuvres with corresponding steering movements and speed adjustments. As a world first, the Active Lane Change Assistant can be controlled by eye activation. The vehicle suggests a lane change and this can be carried out by looking in the exterior mirror to confirm. The Active Lane Change Assistant makes the necessary steering movements automatically up to a speed of 136km/h. It is no longer necessary to confirm the lane change with the turn indicator. The launch timeframe for this functionality in the Irish market is not confirmed.

Driving Assistant with advanced front collision warning and Lane Departure Warning
The new BMW 5 Series Saloon offers a comprehensive safety package as standard equipment with the Driving Assistant. The scope of the front collision warning now includes detection of oncoming traffic when turning left and of pedestrians or cyclists when turning left. The Lane Departure Warning with active lane return now also reacts to oncoming traffic that poses a potential collision risk.

Active lane return has been added to the Lane Change Warning, and a braking function has been added to the rear Crossing-traffic Warning. Further components of the Driving Assistant are the rear collision warning, exit warning, Evasion Assistant and Crossroads Warning with brake intervention. Cruise control with brake function and manual Speed Limit Assist is also standard.

Parking Assistant including Reversing Assistant as standard
The standard Parking Assistant includes start monitoring and the Trailer Assistant, as well as a Reversing Assist Camera that creates panoramic images of the area behind the vehicle. Parking Assistant assists the driver in selecting parallel or perpendicular parking spaces. In addition to the steering tasks, it also takes over accelerating and braking as well as the necessary gear shifts.

The standard Reversing Assistant enables automated reversing in narrow environments such as multi-storey car parks. It stores the steering movements when driven forwards at up to 35km/h, which the system can then repeat in reverse for up to 50 metres.

Parking Assistant Plus, part of the Tech Pack, additionally includes the Parking View, Panorama View front and 3D View functions. This shows a 360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings on the Control Display. In addition, the Remote 3D View function allows the driver to view a live image on their smartphone (available for Apple iPhone from iOS 16.2). The BMW Drive Recorder and anti-theft recorder are also included.

Parking Assistant Professional: Control parking manoeuvres via smartphone
In conjunction with the optional Parking Assistant Professional (part of the Tech Pack Plus), the Reversing Assistant can take over steering for up to 200 metres. The system can now orient itself to marker lines and kerbs as well as other vehicles when parking automatically. In tight spaces, the driver can now control the manoeuvre outside of the vehicle using the My BMW app (available for Apple iPhone from iOS 16.2).

Also included is the BMW Manoeuvre Assistant which uses GPS and trajectory data to store and replay complex parking manoeuvres. Up to ten manoeuvres of up to 200 metres each can be recorded up to 600 metres in total. From the starting point, the BMW Manoeuvre Assistant takes over all steering, accelerating, braking, and gear shifting. Just like automated parking, the driver can control the BMW Manoeuvre Assistant either in the vehicle or from outside using the My BMW app on Apple iPhone.

BMW iDrive featuring “QuickSelect” for faster function selection
To make selecting the numerous functions more intuitive, the latest-generation BMW iDrive offers a redesigned start screen with “QuickSelect” access that allows functions to be called up directly without switching to a submenu. In addition to the Home symbol, there are now also the symbols for direct access to the Air conditioning menu, the All Apps menu, Navigation as well as Media, Telephony and Apple CarPlay^® and Andoid Auto^™, if activated.

BMW Maps with route guidance optimised for charging
The cloud-based navigation system BMW Maps is part of the standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus. It offers fast and dynamic route calculation based on real-time traffic data. In addition, the new BMW Maps system allows drivers to use improved route planning optimised for charging on long-distance journeys with the BMW i5, both in the vehicle and via the My BMW app. Charging stops are planned so that the destination is reached as quickly as possible. The driver's preferred final charging status can be set in five-percent increments and the system can give preference to charging stations from selected providers. Detailed information can be provided on charging stations en route. Availability, supported plug types and payment options are listed, as well as the availability of bathrooms, catering or playgrounds in the vicinity. How long the charging will take and estimated cost can also be shown.

Personalisation with BMW ID and My BMW app
Functioning as a universal digital interface, the My BMW app provides information on the vehicle's status, charge and available range. Via remote access, it enables vehicle location, door locking and unlocking and recording the vehicle's surroundings. The driver can view a live image of the vehicle's surroundings using Remote 3D View and Remote Inside View. In conjunction with the BMW Digital Key Plus, Remote Control Parking functions are also available when in the vicinity of the vehicle.

In addition, the My BMW app can be used to send destination addresses from the smartphone to the vehicle's navigation system and to initiate, purchase or extend ConnectedDrive upgrades. Charging for the BMW i5 can also be controlled via the My BMW app. The My Journeys function provides data and evaluation of distances travelled, consumption, average speed and the eDrive share on the smartphone and can even provide tips for more efficient driving.

Proactive Care: highlighting servicing needs via AI to offer prompt solutions to customers
With Proactive Care, BMW is creating a new platform for customer exchanges. The focus is on recognising the vehicle's service needs by using artificial intelligence to proactively offer solutions to the customer without them having to take action themselves.

From Condition Based Service to digital tyre diagnostics and Battery Guard to accident detection as part of the automatic emergency call, the new BMW 5 Series Saloon identifies servicing or assistance needs and reports them to BMW according to the customer’s preferences. BMW then contacts the customer and proposes a suitable solution. Should the vehicle need servicing urgently while on the road, the customer receives suggestions for a nearby dealership.

Communication takes place via different channels: an in-car message on the Control Display, a message in the My BMW app, by e-mail or – in the event of a collision or breakdown – a Roadside Assistance call. Remote diagnosis is possible with problem solving via software update or online appointment scheduling. In the event of a breakdown, BMW will activate Mobile Service or a tow truck and inform the customer when assistance will arrive.

BMW ID allows parking fees to be paid directly from the BMW 5 Series
Using the BMW ID, the driver can now pay parking fees directly from the vehicle. The new Park Payments function can initially be used in Germany and Austria, with other European countries following during 2023. The vehicle automatically detects whether the service is available and displays the payment function if the parking zone is covered by one of the connected providers. The parking stay can be paid for using the credit card stored in the My BMW app. When the vehicle leaves the parking space, the parking stay is automatically terminated.

Natural dialogue with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant
With the new generation of BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, naturally spoken instructions can now be used to adjust the seat position, start the Parking Assistant or activate the IconicSounds Electric in the BMW i5, among other things. A text overlay shows the customer the command the voice assistant has just understood. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant also now responds to instructions from rear-seat passengers. In addition, the digital companion can recognise user behaviour and make suggestions on how to use the vehicle.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is accompanied by new graphics on the displays that emphasise the system’s interactive character. The digital assistant is visualised so that it ‘leans’ towards the active speaker and shows that it is listening. In addition, the new BMW 5 Series Saloon offers the option of integrating with Amazon Alexa, , to for example, make shopping lists, play music or control your smart home remotely. At home, you can also check on the BMW i5's battery status or activate pre-conditioning using an Alexa capable device.

BMW Digital Key Plus as a fully-fledged vehicle key
The optional Comfort Access function also includes the BMW Digital Key Plus. It offers the option of unlocking and locking the new BMW 5 Series Saloon via security-optimised Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology using iOS or Android smartphones or the Apple Watch. Approaching or moving away from the vehicle triggers unlocking or locking. The smartphone can remain in the customer's pocket. The vehicle owner can also share access with up to five other users.

Smartphone integration as standard
The standard equipment of the new BMW 5 Series Saloon includes smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay^® and Android Auto^™. The services are integrated into the operating system via a Wi-Fi connection between the smartphone and the vehicle. The driver can view all important information from the apps on the Control Display, the instrument cluster and the optional Head-Up Display available as part of the Technology Pack.

Individual driving experience with My Modes
My Modes can be called up by voice command or via a button on the centre console, which takes the place of the previous Driving Experience Control button. The My Modes PERSONAL, SPORT, EFFICIENT as well as RELAX, EXPRESSIVE and DIGITAL ART are available in the new BMW 5 Series Saloon. They can be used to activate settings for the drive, suspension, displays, and interior lighting including the BMW Interaction Bar to suit personal preferences.

Interior camera for image and video recording
The Tech Pack includes an interior camera in the roof area that allows passengers to take photos and record video and sound to capture special moments and share them with friends or family. The recordings can be transferred by scanning a QR code in the control display. In addition, the customer can use the remote function in the My BMW app to request footage from the interior camera on their smartphone. The interior camera is also activated when the anti-theft recorder is triggered.

“Over-the-air” updates: Remote Software Upgrade and BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades
With more than 5 million vehicles on the road, the BMW Group has the world's largest over-the-air upgradeable vehicle fleet. With the Remote Software Upgrades function, the new BMW 5 Series Saloon always stays up to date with the latest software. Upgrades may include free quality improvements or even additional features and functions.

With BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades, customers can test selected functions free of charge for one month and then book them for a specific term. The BMW ConnectedDrive Store for the new BMW 5 Series includes Remote Engine Start, Parking Assistant Professional and Welcome Light projection.

Fixed kilowatt-hour prices for public charging
The main advantage of BMW Charging's public charging offer is the fixed and attractive kilowatt hour prices for AC and DC charging. For drivers of a BMW i5, the monthly fees for the IONITY Plus package are waived for the first twelve months in Ireland. These packages fix the cost of charging, for example IONITY high-power rates are currently 0.73EUR / kWh and (for stations up to 149 kW, under 90 minutes of charging). New BMW 5 Series Saloon meets premium standards of sustainability
The new BMW 5 Series Saloon makes a significant contribution to achieving the company's ambitious climate goals by reducing the carbon footprint in the supply chain by 20 to 25 per cent and by up to 58 percent across the entire life cycle compared to its predecessor. Innovative Frozen paints produced using the Biomass Balance process are now available. In the BMW i5, the waste heat from the electric drive can be used for the first time to warm the battery while the new MAX RANGE function, the range can be increased by up to 25 percent if required.

Munich. The first-ever BMW 5 Series with a fully electric drive system has yet to make its global debut, but it has already come through the ultimate endurance test. The new BMW i5 repeatedly demonstrated both the stability of its electric powertrain and its dynamic performance qualities over the course of arduous test drives in wintry conditions. The programme of testing on ice and snow lasted about a year in all, from the initial test runs to the final stages of fine-tuning. During the extensive testing on country roads, motorways and specially prepared test tracks, the development engineers mainly focused their attention on the car’s ability to drive at low temperatures and on surfaces offering little grip.

The innovative powertrain and chassis control systems on board the new BMW i5 do a great deal to optimise its traction, dynamism and driving stability, and nowhere is this more apparent than on a solid blanket of snow, icy mountain roads or frozen lakes. It was only right that the dynamic winter testing of the purely electrically powered sedan recently finished exactly where it began: in the biting cold of the BMW Group’s winter test centre at Arjeplog, northern Sweden.

Endurance test for BMW eDrive technology, operating continuously at extreme sub-zero temperatures.

As part of the production development process, the new BMW i5 first had to prove its mettle back in February 2022, when it completed a road trip from Munich to the BMW test centre at Arjeplog. A prototype model of the all-electric BMW 5 Series fully camouflaged with a special wrap, plastic attachments, grilles and provisional headlights and rear lights set off on a five-day test drive from the foothills of the Bavarian Alps up to Denmark, then on to the edge of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland.

The journey of around 3,000 kilometres (1,850 miles) provided an early opportunity for the motors, power electronics, high-voltage battery and integrated heating and cooling system for the cabin and battery pack to demonstrate their advanced level of readiness on a long-distance journey. Featuring cutting-edge battery cell technology and intelligently controlled thermal management, the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology – further upgraded for the new BMW i5 – forms the basis for long ranges and short charging times during breaks in the journey, even in extreme sub-zero ambient temperatures.

The final destination of Arjeplog provided the team of development and test engineers with the ideal venue for their test programme. The snow-covered roads and frozen lakes of northern Sweden, with their vast expanses of ice, create the perfect setting for exploring how the chassis components, steering and braking systems, and driving dynamic and driving stability systems all interact with one another in extreme outdoor conditions. As a result, the groundwork for the authoritative, assured and characteristically sporty handling of the new BMW i5 were already laid in the first test drives in Arjeplog.

Testing in everyday driving and on wintry roads in the foothills of the Alps.

This was followed by more testing over the course of 2022, both at other
BMW Group test facilities and in everyday driving in and around Munich as well as in the vicinity of BMW Group Plant Dingolfing. The task here was to continue refining the car’s chassis technology and acoustic properties under a wide variety of conditions, as well as honing the drive unit’s power delivery, in order to produce a well-resolved driving experience at all times.

Here again, part of the development work was deliberately carried out during the colder months on icy and snowy roads in the Alpine foothills. This last winter, BMW i5 prototypes – now sporting less camouflage and near-production headlights – were regularly sent out for testing to verify the functionality and reliability of their powertrain and chassis control systems in extremely demanding road and weather conditions. The BMW engineers involved in the vehicle project were able to directly inspect the current state of development through testing in the BMW brand’s native Bavaria before it was time to return to endurance testing near the Arctic Circle in February 2023.

BMW i5 thrills with its unrivalled handling on ice and snow.

The purpose of this second round of testing in Sweden was to fine-tune all powertrain and chassis control systems. Thanks to their low-grip surfaces, the test areas sited on frozen lakes around Arjeplog were particularly well suited for delicately adjusting the drive torque control system in the BMW i5 under precisely reproducible conditions. In the new BMW i5, the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system, the near-actuator wheel slip limitation function and the drive torque control system are interlinked so that they can interact and complement each other flexibly in any driving situation. As a result, the all-electric sedan performs at least as proficiently as any conventionally powered model on ice and snow.

The integrated application of all powertrain and chassis systems underpins the outstanding handling abilities displayed by the BMW i5 in winter testing. The more challenging the conditions, the more impressive were the speed and precision of the control systems in the fully electric version of the new BMW 5 Series Sedan. The BMW i5 serves up a harmonious blend of optimum traction when pulling away and supreme driving stability when cornering or braking, which is unique in the competitive environment.

Munich. With a ten-year plan for sustainability, the BMW Group is underscoring its commitment to the goals of the Paris climate agreement, the main focus being on the expansion of electric mobility. More than 500,000 electrified vehicles were sold by the end of 2019 and this figure will most likely rise to over 1 million by the end of 2021. The BMW 5 Series makes a substantial contribution towards achieving both past and future goals. With almost 50,000 units, BMW 5 Series plug-in hybrid models were the most successful electrified models in the BMW Group’s portfolio worldwide in 2019.

Extension of the BMW 5 Series to include five plug-in hybrid models.
With an increase from two to five models featuring innovative plug-in hybrid drive by November 2020, the new BMW 5 Series offers the largest range of PHEVs within one BMW Group model series.

The latest generation of BMW eDrive technology in conjunction with a four-cylinder petrol engine powers the BMW 530e plug-in hybrid models. July 2020 saw the launch of the new BMW 530e Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 1.8 – 1.7 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 14.8 – 13.7 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 42 – 39 g/km)* and the new BMW 530e xDrive Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 2.1 – 2.0 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.4 – 15.9 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 49 – 46 g/km)*.

In November 2020, the new BMW 530e Touring (combined fuel consumption: 2.1 – 1.9 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 15.9 – 14.9 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 47 – 43 g/km)* and the new BMW 530e xDrive Touring (combined fuel consumption: 2.3 – 2.1 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.9 – 15.9 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 52 – 49 g/km)* will be launched.

Top of the range model: The new BMW 545e xDrive Sedan.
The new BMW 545e xDrive Sedan (combined fuel consumption: 2.4 – 2.1 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 16.3 – 15.3 kWh/100 km; combined CO₂ emissions: 54 – 49 g/km)* features a synchronous electric motor delivering a maximum power output of 80 kW/109 hp, which is combined with an efficient straight six-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and 210 kW/286 hp, together generating an overall system output of 290 kW/394 hp. Power is distributed as required to all four wheels via an 8-speed Steptronic transmission and intelligent BMW xDrive four-wheel drive. Maximum system torque is 600 Nm and top speed is reached at 250 km/h, whilst a speed of 140 km/h is possible in purely electric operation. From a standstill, the new BMW 545e xDrive accelerates to a speed of 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds*. Thus, the BMW 545e xDrive clearly excels as the most dynamic of all BMW six-cylinder plug-in hybrids.

Thanks to intelligently controlled interaction between both drive systems, the new BMW 545e xDrive combines the best of two worlds. It facilitates not only purely electric driving in urban traffic and efficient commuting between home and the workplace, but also excels through dynamic performance and comfortable long-distance travel. With a purely electric range of 54–57 kilometres* and an average fuel consumption of 2.4–2.1 litres/100 km*, the new BMW 545e xDrive combines brand-typical driving dynamics and a high level of long-distance ride comfort with extremely efficient use of resources.

The latest plug-in hybrid model of the BMW 5 Series is fitted with a 400V lithium-ion battery which is positioned under the rear seat in order to save space. With a luggage volume of 410 litres, the transport capacity of the BMW 545e xDrive is only slightly smaller than of those model variants which are fitted with a conventional engine.

Different driving modes for maximum efficiency in accordance with the relevant driving style and situation.
In order to make optimum use of the combination of the straight six-cylinder engine featuring ultra-smooth running characteristics and eDrive technology in all driving situations, the BMW 545e xDrive supports the driver in numerous ways in terms of energy management. Various driving modes, some of which can be individualised in their operation, are simply selected by pressing the corresponding button on the centre console.

The HYBRID mode is the default setting, which ensures a balanced set-up and an intelligent interaction between combustion engine and electric motor. It is also possible to select ELECTRIC mode as the standard setting via the iDrive menu. In HYBRID mode, the electric motor is predominantly used. The combustion engine only kicks in at higher speeds or under intensive load conditions. Since the system is linked to the navigation system, the interaction between combustion engine and electric motor can be adapted more precisely to the route profile, topography and other driving situations in an anticipatory manner. The electric range is increased by recuperation in overrun and braking phases. The energy supply saved in this way can then be used specifically for locally emission-free driving through urban areas and the arrival at the defined destination.

By pressing the HYBRID button twice, an efficiency-optimised version of this operating mode (HYBRID ECO PRO) is activated.
The coasting function on the overrun, among other things, contributes to a further reduction in consumption. The navigation and sensor data-supported control system also optimises the effectiveness of braking energy recovery. When approaching a junction or a vehicle driving ahead, for example, infinitely adaptive recuperation can be put to particularly intensive use for the purpose of deceleration.

In SPORT mode, the electric motor supports the straight six-cylinder petrol engine when the overall system output of 290 kW/394 hp is fully needed. The set-up is designed for dynamic performance, and the gearshift program is sporty. The ELECTRIC mode, on the other hand, enables locally purely emission-free driving up to 57 kilometres* and up to 140 km/h.

S pecial sounds for a special driving experience.
The new “ready to drive sound” produced by the BMW 545e xDrive is the result of the collaboration with composer Hans Zimmer and is designed to trigger joyful anticipation of the electric drive when the driver enters the vehicle and presses the Start/Stop button.

A distinctive sound created especially for electrified BMW models is used for the purpose of acoustic pedestrian protection, emitted via a speaker system. The sound design in the low speed range of up to 30 km/h radiates a vibrant acoustic presence, though without impairing the acoustic comfort of vehicle occupants.

Likewise, via the vehicle audio system, “Active Sound Design” provides for an authentic and, in the SPORT mode of the Driving Experience Control Switch, for a particularly intense and pronounced sound.

Electric mobility meets digitalisation: Digital services for the plug-in hybrid models of the BMW 5 Series.
The BMW Group also offers innovative digital services that actively contribute towards increasing the attractiveness of electric driving even further.  

The BMW eDrive Zone service facilitates the automatic switching over of the drive system to purely electric mode when entering an urban low-emission zone and similar inner-city areas. In addition, local emission-free driving with a BMW plug-in hybrid model is rewarded through the globally unique loyalty programme BMW Points.

Apart from filling stations, the navigation system also displays public charging points. When selecting a charging station, the driver is also provided with a forecast on its occupation status as well as recommendations for nearby restaurants or cafés. Moreover, BMW enables BMW Charging customers to reserve an enabled charging station for a limited period of time.

Furthermore, other products from BMW Charging also offer the possibility of comfortable charging at home and when out and about. These also comprise various versions of the Wallbox, including installation service, individual offers for the purchase of electricity and access to the world’s largest network of public charging stations comprising more than 155,000 charging points in Europe alone.  

Preconditioning of the interior by means of auxiliary heating and air conditioning ensures optimised comfort during any season. If the preconditioning system is activated during the charging process after defining a specific departure time, the system also guarantees the full electric range in drive mode. The system is controlled either from inside the vehicle or conveniently via the My BMW app.

The BMW 530e iPerformance is the sixth member of a growing portfolio of iPerformance models that have proved a hit with customers. Its exemplary environmental credentials have been recognised in the form of ISO certification.

Power delivery on a par with a high-displacement combustion engine.

The BMW eDrive system’s state-of-the-art electric motor and combustion engine propels the BMW 5c30e iPerformance from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds and enable it to reach a top speed of 235 km/h. The BMW 530e iPerformance has a range of up to 650kms in real-world driving and is capable of covering distances of up to 50kms purely on electric power at a maximum speed of 140 km/h. The electric motor and combustion engine direct their power to the saloon’s rear wheels via the standard eight-speed Steptronic transmission. Positioning the electric motor upstream from the transmission allows the transmission’s ratios to be used in all-electric mode too. This dispenses with the need for a torque converter, something that goes a long way towards offsetting the weight penalty of the additional drive unit.

Unique charging innovations for the high-voltage battery: the BMW Digital Charging Service and BMW Wireless Charging.

The high-voltage battery pack consisting of lithium-ion cells with a total capacity of 9.2 kWh has been placed in a space-saving location underneath the rear seat and includes efficient refrigerant cooling with a highly integrated low-temperature circuit. Thanks to the battery’s clever installation, the BMW 530e iPerformance offers 410 litres of boot capacity and a flat load compartment floor. The high-voltage battery of the BMW 530e iPerformance can be fully charged in under five hours from a standard domestic power socket and in under three hours if it is hooked up to a BMW i Wallbox (3.7 kW charging capacity).

With its BMW Digital Charging Service, BMW is the world’s first car maker to offer a service providing cost-efficient charging. On each occasion, the charging process is managed so that the vehicle always has access to full battery capacity at the required departure time – and, if desired, allows the cabin temperature to be pre-conditioned.The BMW Digital Charging Service is based on two core functions: optimising battery charging in terms of both tariffs and the use of solar power. In addition, BMW Wireless Charging for the high-voltage battery will be made available as an option for the BMW 530e iPerformance from 2018.

Discreet visual differentiation inside and out.

In line with other iPerformance models, there are a number of tell-tale visual signs of the cutting-edge drive technology under the bonnet of the new BMW 530e iPerformance. Blue kidney grille slats, blue wheel hub covers, the charging socket located between the front wheel arch and the A-pillar on the driver’s side, the “eDrive” emblems on the C‑pillars and, of course, the “530e” badge on the boot lid are the most noticeable. When passengers open the doors, they are welcomed by illuminated sill panels bearing “eDrive” lettering and an interior that mirrors the sporty elegance of the exterior design, just as it does on all variants of the business saloon. The BMW 530e iPerformance additionally comes with an eDrive button on the centre console, along with specially designed displays for both the instrument cluster in front of the driver and the central information screen.

BMW eDrive adapts and anticipates.

As well as the Driving Experience Control switch, with its SPORT, COMFORT and ECO PRO settings, drivers will also find an eDrive button at their disposal, which lets them tailor the BMW eDrive system’s operation even more precisely to the journey ahead through three driving modes:

1. AUTO eDRIVE ensures that the engine and electric motor interact to optimum effect in all driving situations and allows an all-electric top speed of 90 km/h. This mode is automatically activated as the default setting every time the vehicle is started.
2. When MAX eDRIVE mode is selected, the BMW 530e iPerformance drives on electric power alone. However, if the accelerator is pressed through to kickdown the engine will cut in.
3. BATTERY CONTROL mode lets the driver set the charge level for the high-voltage battery manually. BATTERY CONTROL mode makes it possible to conserve or even increase the reserves of electric power while travelling on the motorway, for example, in order to ensure that an upcoming section through an urban area can be covered with zero local emissions.

Latest-generation iDrive for even more intuitive operation.

As in all the other models in the new BMW 5 Series line-up, the navigation, phone, entertainment and vehicle functions grouped within the optional high-resolution 10.25-inch display can be controlled not only using the iDrive Controller, but also by simply touching the buttons on the display or with the help of the Intelligent Voice Assistant. BMW gesture control, which reacts to simple movements of the hand or fingers, offers users another option when it comes to operating these functions.

All driver assistance systems and equipment features are available.

These systems comprise the evasion aid, crossing traffic warning, the Lane Change Assistant and active Lane Change Warning, which intervenes in the vehicle’s steering to avert an impending collision. The optional Active Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Keeping Assistant now come with speed limits relayed by Speed Limit Assist to the Active Cruise Control system, with the driver also having the option of setting a margin of variation of +/– 15 km/h. It brings the BMW 530e iPerformance a step closer to automated driving, as does the Steering and lane control assistant; with this system, the vehicle helps the driver maintain a safe distance, accelerate, brake and stay in lane when travelling at speeds up to 210 km/h.

BMW Connected Onboard: the personalised start screen.

BMW’s all-encompassing digital concept BMW Connected seamlessly integrates the vehicle into the user’s digital life via multiple touchpoints, such as an iPhone, Apple Watch, Android smartphone or smartwatch. Using a flexible platform called the Open Mobility Cloud BMW Connected Onboard, allows personalised information such as the next navigation destination, estimated arrival time and current weather conditions at the destination to be shown on the car’s display. BMW Connected is additionally able to transfer the user’s personal mobility agenda from their smartphone straight to their car.

Email access with Microsoft Exchange.

BMW is now the first carmaker to offer Microsoft Office 365 users a secure server connection for exchanging and editing emails, calendar entries and contact details thanks to the car’s built-in Microsoft Exchange function. This seamless integration enables users to stay productive while on the road. Addresses from appointments can be imported straight into the navigation system and telephone numbers can be dialled directly from a linked phone.

Sixth model to carry the iPerformance tag.

In the same way that M Performance is a nod to the link between the BMW core brand and BMW M, BMW highlights the transfer of know-how from BMW i to the core brand’s cars by adding the iPerformance tag to the designations of all plug-in hybrid BMWs. The list of ground-breaking models in whose tyre tracks the BMW 530e iPerformance will follow includes the BMW 225xe iPerformance, BMW 330e iPerformance, BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance and BMW 740e/740Le iPerformance.
