BMW i4: successful, trailblazing model with flexible drive
system architecture.
The world premiere of the BMW i4
in 2021 established purely electric mobility at the core of the BMW
brand. The i4 was the first premium model in the midsize class and
brought the brand’s signature design, material & build quality,
individualisation and intuitive operation together with locally
emission-free mobility.

In addition, the unmatched overall design coherence of the BMW i4
continues to elevate it above all its rivals. Its sophisticated
chassis technology – tuned precisely to the vehicle concept and the
performance characteristics of the all-electric drive system –
delivers an engaging driving experience in the unmistakable style of
the BMW brand. The BMW Group’s technological expertise and decades of
experience in the development of sporty premium cars come to the fore
in the integrated application of all powertrain and chassis control
systems – and instil the BMW i4 with sublime poise and assurance.
Extremely dynamic acceleration manoeuvres are executed with
exceptional traction and directional stability, while the car’s
precisely controllable handling up to the limit heightens its agility
and cornering dynamics. High levels of ride, vibration and acoustic
comfort enhance driving pleasure over long distances.

With its overall concept focused on delivering compelling
all-electric driving pleasure, the BMW i4 has spearheaded the BMW
Group’s electric offensive. It was the company’s most successful
electric vehicle in 2023, selling more than 83,000 units worldwide.
And most recently, the all-electric variants of the BMW 4 Series Gran
Coupé accounted for around two thirds of its overall sales. The BMW i4
has also acted as the driving force behind the transformation of BMW M
GmbH into a provider of electric mobility; the range-topping BMW i4
M50 xDrive was the highest-selling BMW M model in both 2022 and 2023.

The success of the BMW i4 in Europe also played a major role in
helping the BMW Group to lower its fleet CO2 emissions once
again in 2023. The company’s provisional figure of 102.1 g/km in the
WLTP cycle was well below the European Union’s target of 128.5 g/km.
This equates to a 2.8 per cent reduction in fleet CO2
emissions compared to 2022.

The popularity of the BMW i4 also represents an endorsement of the
BMW Group’s “technology-open” approach in the current ramp-up phase of
electric mobility. The all-electric gran coupé was developed on the
basis of a flexible drive system architecture. Similar vehicle
concepts now also enable BMW 7 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW X1, BMW X2
and BMW X3 model variants with combustion engines, plug-in hybrid
systems and all-electric drive to be offered alongside one another.

New design for the BMW kidney grille, headlights and rear
lights.
The BMW i4 and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé feature a
refreshed design that brings additional visual impact to the brand’s
signature brand features. The surround of the BMW kidney grille is now
finished in matt chrome. Due to the low cooling requirement of the
electric drive system, the BMW kidney grille of the new BMW i4 has a
fully enclosed upper section, which sits below a Black high-gloss
surface topped by a matt-silver honeycomb pattern. The air intakes on
the combustion-engine versions of the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé have
a mesh structure with surfaces now painted in matt Quartz Silver.

As well as a front apron with large side air intakes, BMW i4 and BMW
4 Series Gran Coupé models in M Sport specification also include a
diffuser element in the lower section of the rear bumper, which is now
painted in high-gloss Black. In addition, the exhaust tailpipes
integrated into the rear apron on the left and right of the
combustion-engine models have grown from 90 millimetres to 100
millimetres in diameter. Like the BMW kidney grille surround, if the
optional M high-gloss Shadowline is specified, they are finished in
Black high-gloss. Customers can also choose to order their cars with
the M Sport Pro pack and M Carbon exterior pack.

The visually and functionally upgraded headlights also play their
part in the modern appearance of the front end. The new structure of
their LED units creates a focused look, with the low and high beam
being generated from a single LED module. A pair of vertical and
subtly arrow-shaped LED units house the side light, daytime driving
light and turn signal indicator functions. If the optional Comfort
Access is fitted, the new headlights generate a Welcome Light
Animation once the driver and vehicle key come within three metres of
the car.

Options include Adaptive LED Headlights with blue inlays,
non-dazzling matrix high beam, urban lights and a cornering light
function. The prism structure of the LED units for the urban lights
provides a striking contrast against the uniform illumination of the
daytime driving light units.

Where customers choose the optional Adaptive LED Headlights on the
new BMW i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, their vehicle will also be
fitted with highly expressive Laserlight rear lights. This
model-specific version of an innovative lighting effect employs a
technology first seen in the BMW M4 CSL. Laser diodes each illuminate
a fibre optic bundle giving the rear units an intricate light graphic,
creating an exclusive light design at the rear of these newly revised models.

New exterior paint finishes and aerodynamic
wheels.
The selection of exterior paint finishes for the
BMW i4 and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé now also comprises the new Cape
York Green metallic and Fire Red metallic shades. A wide variety of
BMW Individual paint finishes and BMW Individual special paint
finishes are also offered.

The selection of optional light-alloy wheels available to customers
also features attractive new additions. 19-inch M aerodynamic wheels
in double-spoke design can be ordered on cars specified with the M
Sport package. Also new to the range are 20-inch BMW Individual
aerodynamic wheels in double-spoke design. The two new light-alloy
wheel variants each have a bi-colour finish and are fitted with
mixed-size tyres.

New interior accents target progressive sporting
appeal.
The modifications to the interior of the new BMW
i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé are focused on digitalisation and
achieving a sharper sporting profile. The upgraded BMW iDrive with
QuickSelect enables a further reduction in the number of buttons and
controls in the cockpit. The functions of the automatic climate
control system and – if fitted – seat and steering wheel heating can
now be operated by touch via the BMW Curved Display or by voice
command with the help of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. New
adjustment controls for the air vent grilles in the centre of the
instrument panel and on the driver’s and front passenger side of the
cockpit allow the airflow direction to be adjusted using rotating and
tilting movements.

M Sport and M Performance models see the black seat surfaces fitted
in new M Performtex. This innovative covering combines high material
quality and a sporty design with low weight and a
sustainability-optimised production approach. Sports derivatives of
the new BMW i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé are fitted as standard
with sport seats in Sensatec perforated. Vernasca leather trim with
decorative quilting is available as an option and is also newly
available in a bi-colour Black/Red variant. BMW Individual Merino
leather trim in three colours can also be specified as an option.

Newly designed steering wheels and gearshift paddles now
standard.
The new BMW i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran
Coupé come as standard with a two-spoke steering wheel with polygonal
rim and illuminated multifunction buttons in Sport trim. M Sport
models now brings an M leather steering wheel in three-spoke design
with a flat-bottomed rim and a discreet centre marking in the 12
o’clock position.

All steering wheel variants available for the combustion-engine BMW 4
Series Gran Coupé models are now equipped with gearshift paddles as
standard. The two paddles – on the left-hand and right-hand steering
wheel spokes – enable super-swift manual interventions in the gear
selection process of the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.

High-quality materials, adjustable ambient lighting.
New interior trim elements in Dark Graphite matt
feature as standard in Sport models on both BMW i4 and BMW 4 Series
Gran Coupé, helping to create a premium ambience of renewed
sophistication on board. M Sport models include interior trim strips
in Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite. Also on the options list alongside
M interior trim carbon fibre are the new Fineline Light open-pored and
Grey Blue Ash open-pored fine-wood trim variants.

The ambient lighting – standard across the range – includes contour
lighting integrated into the trim around the central seam vents. Like
the lighting for the footwells, the storage compartment in the front
section of the centre console and the door openers, this can be
adjusted for colour and brightness according to personal preference.
Users can choose from nine colours. The functionality of the interior
lighting also includes an atmospheric Welcome and Goodbye Animation
and light signals indicating an open door or incoming phone call.

The new additions to the options list also include the luxury
instrument panel in Sensatec with a further refined surface structure,
which features on the door shoulders too. And customers can now also
order their cars with CraftedClarity glass applications for the gear
selector, BMW iDrive Controller and Start/Stop button on the centre console.

Powertrain and charging technology.
The BMW i4
and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé are available in a wide spread of variants
powered by the latest BMW eDrive technology or petrol engines. The new
cars channel their power to the road via classical rear-wheel drive or
the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

Playing a key role in enhancing the sporty driving pleasure available
in the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is the eight-speed Steptronic Sport
transmission fitted as standard with the combustion engines. It offers
an ultra-sharp shift action and also enables swift manual
interventions in the gear selection process. All the petrolengined
models feature gearshift paddles on the steering wheel for this purpose.

Combustion engines with 48V mild hybrid technology
The highly efficient petrol engines available for the
new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, which feature BMW TwinPower Turbo
technology, and on the six-cylinder electrification in the form of 48V
mild hybrid technology, deliver an exceptional blend of sporting
driving pleasure and fuel economy. Customers in Ireland can choose
from the six-cylinder in-line engine with a peak output of 374 hp in
the M440i xDrive M Performance model or the BMW 420i Gran Coupé.

The auxiliary electric drive the six-cylinder petrol derivative takes
the form of a 48V starter generator and makes output of 11 hp
instantly available in response to the slightest movement of the
accelerator. This electric boost enhances the drive system’s dynamic
response when accelerating off the line and putting in mid-range
bursts of speed. The electric drive unit also assists the engine when
travelling at a constant speed, allowing it to operate within an
efficiency-optimised load range as often as possible.

Chassis technology and driver assistance systems.
Agility, dynamism and impressive long-distance comfort
are the defining driving qualities of the new BMW i4 and new BMW 4
Series Gran Coupé. Outstanding straight-line stability, precisely
controllable response to sudden movements of the accelerator and
steering wheel, as well as composed handling up to the limit – even
under high lateral forces – all help to produce the type of driving
experience for which BMW is renowned. The extremely rigid body and
chassis mountings, intelligent lightweight design, low centre of
gravity, almost perfect 50 : 50 weight distribution and optimised
aerodynamic properties provide all the necessary ingredients for a
well-rounded vehicle character.

The double-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle have
likewise been engineered to reduce weight while increasing rigidity.
Electromechanical steering with Servotronic function, an integrated
braking system, the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system and
near-actuator wheel slip limitation all come as standard too.

Model-specific chassis technology with a bespoke
set-up.
Sophisticated chassis technology combines with
the model-specific design and set-up of all components to ensure an
ideal blend of sporting flair and ride comfort in all powertrain
variants. In the all-electric BMW i4, for instance, the high-voltage
battery is firmly bolted to the floor assembly and its casing serves
as a load-bearing structural element to maximise torsional stiffness.
Like the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé range, the BMW i4 is fitted with
integral tower-to-front end struts, an aluminium shear panel at the
front end and underfloor bracing elements in the rear axle area.

The lift-related dampers are another factor influencing the handling
characteristics of the new BMW i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé.
Depending on the spring travel, these provide extra damping to control
body movement when driving over large bumps and inhibit excessive
dive. The system reacts to minor imperfections in the road surface
with low damping forces that produce high levels of comfort. The BMW
i4 is also equipped as standard with rear air suspension including
automatic self-levelling. M Sport suspension, adaptive M suspension
with variable sport steering and M Sport brakes can all be added to
models equipped with the M Sport package to customise their handling characteristics.

Wide variety of driver assistance systems.
An
array of advanced assistance systems are on hand to enhance comfort
and safety when driving and parking the new BMW i4 and new BMW 4
Series Gran Coupé. The front collision warning system with brake
intervention and Cruise Control with brake function are both fitted as
standard, along with Speed Limit Info with no-overtaking indicator,
manual Speed Limit Assist and Lane Departure Warning with lane return.
The standout optional extra is the Driving Assistant Professional
package comprising the Steering and Lane Control Assistant and Active
Cruise Control with Stop&Go function, plus automatic Speed Limit
Assist, route speed control, traffic light recognition, the Evasion
Assistant, Crossroads Warning with city braking function, Wrong-way
Warning and Front Crossing Traffic Warning.

Park Distance Control with sensors at both the front and rear comes
as standard, as does the Parking Assistant. This system enables
automated manoeuvring into and out of parking spaces, and also
features a Reversing Assist Camera and the Reversing Assistant. There
is also the option of the Parking Assistant Plus with Park View,
Panorama View and Remote 3D View functions.

Captivating dynamic flair with a distinctive
edge.
The two M Performance models spearheading the
range demonstrate impressively how the flexible drive system
architecture can package the inimitable feeling of M in both a
traditional and all-electric form. The BMW i4 M50 xDrive distils the
signature M performance in all-electric guise. Its peak output even
exceeds that of the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé, which has a
six-cylinder in-line petrol engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology
under its bonnet. The combustion-engine M Performance model also
benefits from BMW’s systematic approach to electrification with a 48V
mild hybrid system further sharpening its power delivery and
optimising efficiency.

Both models combine their extremely powerful drive system with
M-specific chassis technology and aerodynamically optimised body
features. The latest M Performance models feature fresh touches both
inside and out to give added emphasis to their highly exclusive form
of sporting flair. In this way, and more clearly than ever before, the
dynamism, agility and precision synonymous with the BMW M brand go
hand in hand with distinctive looks and a characteristic cockpit ambience.

All-electric BMW i4 M50 xDrive takes pole
position.
Two highly integrated drive units bringing
together an electric motor, power electronics and transmission within
a single housing help the BMW i4 M50 xDrive to top the output
rankings. The electric motor driving the rear wheels generates peak
output of 313 hp, while the unit at the front axle produces 258 hp.
Together they create an electric all-wheel-drive system which is
controlled quickly and precisely to ensure effortless progress in any
driving situation. The fully variable system means power can always be
distributed to optimum effect – from highly efficient pure rear-wheel
drive through to an all-wheel-drive set-up that maximises traction.

A specially designed boost function is available to the driver in
SPORT mode to initiate dynamic power delivery from both electric
motors. This increases maximum combined output by 68 hp to 544 hp for
over 10 seconds, at the same time as boosting maximum combined torque
by 65 Nm (48 lb-ft) to 795 Nm (586 lb-ft). Activating the Sport Boost
function enables the BMW i4 M50 xDrive to sprint from rest to 100km/h
in just 3.9 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 225km/h.

Powerful six-cylinder in-line engine in the BMW M440i xDrive
Gran Coupé.
Displaying the appetite for revs and
smooth running familiar from straight-six units made by BMW,
developing maximum output of 374 hp and generating peak torque of 500
Nm (369 lb-ft), the petrol engine powering the BMW M440i xDrive Gran
Coupé has all the tools to deliver a captivating performance
experience. 48V mild hybrid technology producing output of 11 hp is
also on hand for an electric boost effect.

The power unit teams up with the eight-speed Steptronic Sport
transmission and BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive to propel the
BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé from 0 – 62 km/h in 4.7 seconds. The
engine’s build-up of power is accompanied by an exhilarating
soundtrack from the M Sport exhaust system. Top speed is
electronically limited to 155 km/h.

M-specific chassis technology for smile-inducing
performance.
The two range-topping models are each
equipped with chassis technology tailored specifically to their
respective drive system’s performance characteristics. Both the M
Sport suspension on the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé and the adaptive M
suspension with electronically controlled dampers featured on the BMW
i4 M50 xDrive include variable sport steering. The duo’s stunning
performance capabilities are also partly down to their M Sport brakes.
The petrol model also features an M Sport differential at the rear axle.

Both models ride on 18-inch M light-alloy wheels as standard, with
further light-alloy wheel variants up to 20 inches in size available
as options together with sport tyres.

New BMW kidney grille, M specific touches in Black
high-gloss.
The BMW i4 M50 xDrive and BMW M440i xDrive
Gran Coupé underline their sporty character with M-specific design
features producing eye-catching visuals. Both models now feature a BMW
kidney grille with a Black high-gloss surround and horizontally
arranged bars adorned by a BMW M logo. And the front apron elements
that were previously finished in Cerium Grey also come in Black
high-gloss. As a result, the front-end styling is now even more
closely related to the design of the BMW M4 high-performance sports cars.

The distinctive trapezoidal tailpipe trim at the rear end of the new
BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé likewise sports a Black high-gloss finish.
The M Carbon exterior package available as an option for both
range-topping models comprises side air intake trim at the front end,
M specific exterior mirror caps, a diffuser insert in the rear apron
and a model-specific rear spoiler all made from carbon
fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).

Interior: M leather steering wheel and new seat
upholstery.
The new M leather steering wheel in
three-spoke design now comes with a flat-bottomed rim, decorative
stitching in BMW M colours and a red centre marker, further adding to
the performance experience in the cockpit of the top-of-the-range
models. In the BMW M440i xDrive Gran Coupé, the steering wheel also
features gearshift paddles for changing gear manually.

The sport seats in both models are finished in new M Performtex
upholstery with black surfaces and M piping as standard. Both the
standard seats and the optional M Sport seats can be optionally
specified in Vernasca leather upholstery, which now comes in a choice
of Black with blue contrast quilting or the new Black/Red bi-colour
finish. Also standard in the M Performance models are interior trim
elements in Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite, M door sill trim, M
pedals, an M driver’s footrest, an anthracite-coloured headliner and
M-specific graphics for the BMW Curved Display.

BMW Operating System 8.5
The latest generation
of the BMW iDrive display and control/operation system with
QuickSelect based on BMW Operating System 8.5 opens up a new way of
intuitively controlling vehicle functions and accessing digital
services in the BMW i4 and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé. With the digital
BMW Curved Display screen grouping and the expanded capabilities of
the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, the driver-centric cockpit has
been geared squarely to operation using touch control and natural language.

The climate control functions are also operated digitally in the new
BMW i4 and new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, enabling a further reduction
in the number of physical buttons and controls. The control/operation
system additionally comprises multifunction buttons on the steering
wheel, the BMW iDrive Controller and, as an option, the BMW Head-Up Display.

BMW iDrive with QuickSelect: key functions available with one
touch.
The system’s QuickSelect feature paves the way
for an improved menu structure that takes its cue from consumer
electronics devices. It allows the driver to navigate to functions
directly from the newly arranged home screen without having to enter
submenus. The new, flat menu structure makes it much easier to switch
between different functions and helps the driver to focus their
attention on what’s happening on the road.

The new home screen continuously displays the navigation system’s map
view or other individually configurable graphics on the control
display. On the same level, there is a vertical bar on the driver’s
side of the display containing widgets that can now be individually
selected and arranged. The BMW i4 also includes a widget for the
charging functions. Some of the widgets can also be swiped
horizontally to show additional content. The related functions can
then be called up directly with QuickSelect. Once the relevant
settings have been chosen, a quick tap on the home icon at the lower
edge of the control display is all it takes to return to the home
screen. Icons for direct access to the climate control menu, All Apps
menu and, if activated, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ can also now
be found next to the home icon.

BMW Maps navigation system with new charging-optimised route
guidance and Augmented View.
The cloud-based BMW Maps
navigation system forms part of the standard BMW Live Cockpit Plus.
Underpinned by BMW Operating System 8.5, the system now makes it even
easier to input destinations and can offer additional information
while driving. Further enhancements include better usability of
filters, a flatter menu structure with touch buttons shown directly on
the map view and proactive route recommendations.

The latest version of BMW Maps also gives BMW i4 drivers access –
both from the vehicle and via the My BMW App – to improved functions
that enable charging-optimised route planning over long journeys at a
level of precision no rival can match. The charging stops are planned
so that the selected destination is reached as quickly as possible.
The driver’s preferred minimum charge level when arriving at
mid-journey stops and the final destination can be adjusted in
increments of five per cent and incorporated into the route planning.
The system can also give preference to charging stations operated by
selected providers and exclude others from the route planning at the
driver’s request. The system will then propose the latter only if
there seems to be no alternative for an efficient route without any
large detours.

Additional information is provided for the selected charging
stations, such as supported connector types and payment options, as
well as the availability of sanitary, catering or shopping facilities
in the vicinity. The expected duration of the planned charging stop
and the resulting electricity costs can also be shown in advance. The
closer the vehicle gets to a scheduled mid-journey stop, the more
frequently the availability of the charging point is checked so that
an alternative route can be recommended in good time if necessary.
Regardless of the charging-optimised route given, a continuous stream
of alternative charging options are also displayed, e.g. for
spontaneous mid-journey breaks.

Specifying the optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional adds not only
the full-colour BMW Head-Up Display, but also the Augmented View
function. This offers contextual, real-time information to complement
the navigation system’s map display by showing a live video stream of
the driver’s view on the control display or instrument cluster and
augmenting it with information that is currently relevant. At
confusing junctions, for instance, an animated directional arrow is
integrated into the video image to help the driver take the best
turn-off for the planned route.

Personalisation and remote access with BMW ID and My BMW App.
BMW Operating System 8.5 also makes it even easier to
personalise the user experience in the BMW i4 and BMW 4 Series Gran
Coupé. Signing in to the vehicle by scanning a QR code with a
smartphone is all it takes to import the customer’s personal profile,
load synchronisable settings and automatically link the key detected
in the vehicle with the BMW ID.

The vehicle is also automatically added to the My BMW App. Available
free of charge from the app stores for both iOS and Android, the My
BMW App acts as a universal digital interface that provides
information on the vehicle’s condition, charging status or remaining
range at any time. Depending on the car’s specification, it also gives
the user access to various remote functions. For example, the vehicle
can be located remotely via the My BMW App and the doors locked and
unlocked. The Remote 3D View and Remote Inside View functions included
with the optional Parking Assistant Plus give drivers the ability to
call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle’s immediate
vicinity and its interior on their smartphone.

The My BMW App can also be used to send destination addresses from
the user’s smartphone to the vehicle’s navigation system for route
planning and to initiate, purchase or extend ConnectedDrive Upgrades.
It is also possible to control the charging process and
pre-conditioning for the BMW i4 from the My BMW App. The My Trips
feature including Efficiency Trainer and monthly review provides the
user with data and evaluations for distances travelled, consumption
and average speed, as well as offering helpful tips for driving more efficiently.

BMW Charging with fixed kWh prices for public
charging
The key benefit of the BMW Charging offering is
the attractive kWh prices offered for AC and DC charging in Europe
under the Active tariff, which are set for each country and remain the
same regardless of the operator or the price shown. The high-power
charging network run by the BMW Group’s joint venture IONITY – which
is compatible with the Plug & Charge functionality – also forms
part of the BMW Charging network. The basic monthly fee for the IONITY
Plus package and the BP Pulse package is waived for BMW i4 drivers for
the first 12 months.

Sustainability in product design and
manufacturing.
Sustainable business practices are an
integral part of the BMW Group’s corporate strategy. The company has
not only shown an unwavering commitment to pushing forward the
electrification of all its drive systems, but also worked tirelessly
to increase the efficiency of its entire product portfolio. Indeed, it
has achieved consistent reductions in the fuel consumption and
emissions of its models powered by combustion engines and raised the
energy efficiency and range of its all-electric vehicles, without
compromising on BMW’s hallmark driving pleasure.

Back in 2007, the company launched the BMW EfficientDynamics package
of measures and technology as part of the development process. It was
conceived to give the company’s vehicles the highest possible output
while minimising energy consumption. This overarching concept includes
everything from the further development of all drive systems to
improvements in energy and heat management, optimisation of
aerodynamics, weight reduction through intelligent lightweight design
and the integration of digital efficiency functions. It represents an
integrated approach to reducing a vehicle’s environmental footprint
that extends over its entire lifecycle – from development, the
procurement of raw materials and the use of secondary materials, to
the production, use and subsequent recycling of the vehicle according
to circular economy principles. For the BMW Group, sustainability and
premium characteristics are inextricably linked, rather than competing forces.

In addition, the BMW Group is committed to the Paris Climate
Agreement which means it is pursuing specifically defined CO2e reduction targets for its
supply chain, production and use phase. For example, the company is
aiming to cut CO2 emissions by 40 per cent per vehicle
across the entire value chain by 2030, compared with the figures from
2019. The BMW Group is pursuing the objective of full climate
neutrality throughout the value chain by 2050 at the latest.

CO2-optimised production with 100 per cent green
energy.
Since 2020 all the locations in the BMW Group’s
worldwide production network have been supplied exclusively with
electricity generated from renewable sources. Some of the green energy
is supplied via direct contracts with regional providers, which
further improves the environmental credentials of the electricity we
use due to the short supply distances involved. For example, the green
electricity needed for production of the BMW i4 and BMW 4 Series Gran
Coupé at BMW’s home plant in Munich will come from hydroelectric power
stations in the region.

Other measures aimed at increasing sustainability include
incrementally improving energy efficiency in the production processes,
optimised packaging planning and transport logistics, plus recycling
and water management.

With the aim of preventing waste, the BMW Group employs coordinated
recycling and processing concepts that are tailored to waste flows at
the individual plants, to the legal requirements in place in the
relevant region and to the disposal structures available at the site.
In 2023, 99.4 per cent  of the waste generated during production was
recycled or recovered. The quantity of waste for disposal per vehicle
produced fell by 22.6 per cent over the previous year to
2.12 kilograms – a significant drop. The high recycling and recovery
rate at the BMW Group should be maintained as the company navigates
the ongoing transition to electric mobility.

The ‘secondary first’ approach: step by step to a circular
economy.
The BMW Group’s exacting sustainability goals
include increasing the use of secondary raw materials in vehicle
production. The company is pursuing a circular economy vision in which
raw materials are kept in circulation for as long as possible. This
should then reduce the use of primary materials, the associated mining
of new raw materials and the energy- and CO2-intensive processing of those materials.

In line with its “secondary first” approach, the BMW Group is set to
expand the use of secondary materials, given the requisite market
availability and technical feasibility. The alloy wheel rims for BMW
vehicles are already made of 70 per cent recycled aluminium. And
bio-based colours are being used for matt paint finishes in an
increasing number of factories.

Similarly, using secondary materials and green electricity has also
cut CO2 emissions from the production of the battery cells
for fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology – by around 40 per cent
since 2021 compared with a conventional manufacturing method. Added to
which, during development of the battery cells now in use, the
proportion of the critical material cobalt contained in the cathode
material was reduced to ten per cent of the amount found in the
previous-generation battery. As with the light metal lithium also
needed for battery cell production, the cobalt is obtained under
transparent conditions that are monitored regularly by the BMW Group.
The company can therefore ensure that environmental and sustainability
guidelines are observed during the mining and processing of cobalt and
lithium and that there are no violations of human rights. The second
use and recycling of high-voltage batteries in initiator projects is
also already part of the BMW Group’s sustainability concept.

The current-excited synchronous motor design principle of the
electric motors in the BMW i4 also stand out, allowing the engineers
to avoid using the rare earths that would otherwise be required to
manufacture permanent magnets. Short transport routes and regionally
based suppliers play a decisive role, especially with regard to
sustainable supply chains. To ensure that purchasing takes place as
close as possible to the respective production site, the principle
guiding the BMW Group’s global sourcing strategy is ‘local for local’.

Efficiency Trainer helps to achieve a more efficient driving
style.
Alongside the BMW EfficientDynamics technology, a
key influencing factor in achieving low fuel consumption and
CO2 emissions during the use phase is an efficient driving
style. The Efficiency Trainer in the My BMW App assists the driver
with tips on how to adopt a sustainability-optimised driving style. To
this end, the digital assistant analyses completed journeys and
provides both tips for improvements and incentives by comparing the
driver’s fuel consumption with figures posted by other users in the
BMW community.

In addition, the high-voltage battery in the BMW i4 will be charged
using 100 per cent green energy when the customer is using the DC
fast-charging stations in Europe operated by the IONITY high-power
charging network co-founded by the BMW Group. Each time the customer
charges their car using one of these stations, they are therefore
helping to shrink the vehicle’s carbon footprint in the use phase.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ. BMW will debut a new 60-second
advertisement during the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 13, 2022, to
showcase its All-New, fully electric BMW iX Sports Activity Vehicle,
which arrives in the US next month. The star-studded spot features
legendary actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Academy Award nominee Salma
Hayek Pinault, and was directed by two-time Academy Award nominated
director Bryan Buckley. It will air during the third commercial break
of the first quarter of the game.

Schwarzenegger stars as Zeus, the Greek god of lightning, and Hayek
Pinault plays his wife, the goddess Hera, as they retire from Mt.
Olympus to a quiet life in Palm Springs, California. However, the
monotony of retirement quickly weighs on Zeus, who becomes frustrated
by his struggles with earthly electronics and his nagging mortal
neighbors’ constant requests to charge their electric golf carts and
hedge trimmers. Meanwhile, Hera, the hero of the story, has fully
acclimated and is thriving in retirement. In an effort to bring some
excitement back into Zeus’s life, she gifts him with an all-electric
BMW iX, which quickly helps reignite her husband’s electric mojo. The
spot closes with the happy couple rocking down the road in their new
BMW iX to Eddy Grant’s “Electric Avenue” while Zeus uses his electric
power to change the traffic lights to green.

“All-electric mobility is at the very heart of the BMW brand,” said
Jens Thiemer, senior vice president, customer and brand, BMW AG.
“There is no better place to make this statement than in front of one
of the largest television audiences in the world, where viewers tune
in as much for the commercials as they do for the game. With Arnold
and Salma, we are able show the world the new BMW iX in a memorable
and impactful way.”

“The humor lies in this legendary god of lightning, who is supposed
to be indestructible, battling with everyday electronics,” said
Schwarzenegger. “It is only when his brilliant wife presents him with
the gift of an all-electric BMW iX that Zeus is struck with the mighty
power of electricity and is completely rejuvenated.”

The spot was conceived by BMW’s lead U.S. creative agency, Goodby
Silverstein & Partners, and directed by two-time Academy Award
nominated director Bryan Buckley, highly acclaimed for his work on
more than 65 Super Bowl commercials. The ad also marks Hayek Pinault’s
debut in a Super Bowl spot and the first time she and Schwarzenegger
have costarred in a national ad.

“This is my first Super Bowl commercial—and the first time I’ve
played a Greek goddess,” said Hayek Pinault. “Seventy-five percent of
the decisions made in a marriage about where to spend the money are
made by women, and in this commercial, it is the woman who decides on
the right car to get her husband back on track. Of course, the
commercial is entertaining, but there is also a real human truth to it.”

“I’ve done 60-some-odd Super Bowl spots. I’ve never had more star
power than these two,” said director Bryan Buckley. “When I first saw
Schwarzenegger’s name on the script, I was in. And Salma—there is no
one greater as an actress. It’s a movie in 60 seconds, and it’s on the
biggest platform.”

“Transcending sports, this iconic annual event isn’t just a
championship game. It’s a cultural phenomenon where viewers pay even
more attention when the action on the field stops,” said Rich
Silverstein, co-founder and co-chairman of Goodby Silverstein &
Partners. “There’s only one person on the planet who could say he’s
Zeus, and that’s Arnold. And there’s only one brand worthy of being
called the Ultimate Electric Driving Machine, and that’s BMW. We
needed to showcase this in a big way, and that is what we’re doing on
February 13.”

Designed to provide more than just mortal mobility, the BMW iX brings
together the fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology with the
company’s latest developments in the fields of design, connectivity,
digital services and sustainability. With 516 hp and a 0–60 time of
only 4.6 seconds, the BMW iX offers an exhilarating driving experience
with an EPA estimate of up to 324 miles of all-electric range and the
latest in-vehicle technology, including 5G connectivity, a sweeping
curved display that unites the 12.3-inch information display with a
14.9-inch central control display, and the debut of BMW iDrive 8, the
company’s latest user-interface system. The BMW iX starts at $83,200
plus $995 destination and handling.

“This is a pinnacle event in the U.S. and the perfect stage on which
to introduce the BMW iX to our customers,” said Uwe Dreher, vice
president, marketing, BMW of North America. “We have already seen a
significant number of preorders for both the BMW iX and BMW i4, and a
huge amount of excitement for these two new electric vehicles.”

Alongside the BMW iX, BMW will also launch the fully electric BMW i4
four-door Gran Coupe in the U.S. next month as the company takes a
major step toward its stated goal of reaching global sales of 50%
electric vehicles by 2030.

BMW’s last Super Bowl had appeared in 2015 and featured Katie Couric
and Bryant Gumbel as they marveled over BMW’s first fully electric
production vehicle, the BMW i3. The BMW i3 was a pioneer of
electromobility and later became one of the best-selling premium
electric vehicles in the world.

Munich. Local emission-free driving pleasure has
never been greater than with the first-ever BMW iX and the first-ever
BMW i4. The fitting soundtrack for the debut of the latest
all-electric models is called "Higher Power" and comes from
the British band Coldplay. You can hear the quartet's latest single in
the TV commercials filmed for launching the joint worldwide
communication campaign for the two new models. It delivers the perfect
message with the lyric line "This joy is electric". The song
for a new era of individual mobility marks the beginning of a
long-term collaboration between BMW and Coldplay.

Back in 2014, Coldplay, made up of Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Will
Champion and Guy Berryman, performed before 1,500 fans at the end of
their "Ghost Stories Tour" at BMW Welt in Munich. On the
basis of the contact established at that time, a creative connection
has now been established between the premium car manufacturer and the
band, which has achieved worldwide success in the charts. This is
based in particular on a common interest in sustainability in various
areas of life.

"In the initial discussions we quickly realised: Coldplay and
BMW share many common goals that go far beyond marketing," says
Jens Thiemer, Senior Vice President Customer and Brand BMW.
"Based on this we developed a real co-creation in which the band
actively contributed their thoughts and attitude to the design of our
campaign for the BMW iX and the BMW i4." The shared awareness of
sustainability gave rise to an intensive creative process between BMW
and the British musicians and which will produce further co-created
elements later in the year.

For the BMW Group, the premiere of the BMW iX and the BMW i4 is an
important milestone in the current phase of its transformation towards
electric mobility. The company expects all-electric models to account
for at least 50 percent of its global vehicle sales as early as 2030.
The Coldplay musicians are looking for innovative ways to combine
their popularity and performances in front of thousands of
enthusiastic fans with a positive impact with regard to
sustainability. The band said "We are proud to partner with BMW
as part of our efforts to make everything we do as sustainable as
possible. The technology that BMW use for their electric cars can
power our live performances almost entirely from renewable energy."

For the premiere of their new song "Higher Power", Coldplay
already managed to overcome the usual boundaries of the music
business. Last month, Coldplay premiered "Higher Power” in space.
The song was played for the first time by French astronaut Thomas
Pesquet on the International Space Station. Shortly after, the band
played its first live set of 2021 for earthly audiences in a special
livestream from the site of Glastonbury Festival.

With the launch for the campaign film for the BMW iX and the BMW i4,
fans all over the world can now enjoy the sound of "Higher
Power". "And that's just the beginning," announces
Stefan Ponikva, Vice President BMW Brand Communication and Brand
Experience. "We are already looking forward to being able to
realise exciting projects with regard to sustainability in an
intensive and substantial collaboration with Coldplay."

The BMW i4 will be produced at BMW Group Plant Munich. Its
production, which is performed alongside petrol, diesel and
plug-in-hybrid models on the same line, marks the beginning of a new
era for the manufacturing facility. The BMW Group invested around
200 million Euros in the company’s home plant to cover the necessary
disassembly and conversion work for the production machinery. Both the
BMW i4 and its battery cells will be manufactured using 100 per cent
green energy.

Precisely coordinated premium drive and chassis technology
The
superb dynamic performance offered by the BMW i4 distinguishes it from
other electric vehicles in its segment. The standard chassis
technology’s extremely sophisticated features (some of which are
exclusive to BMW) include the lift-related dampers, rear air
suspension, electromechanical steering with Servotronic function,
integrated braking system, DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system and
near-actuator wheel slip limitation. The BMW i4 M50 boasts a bespoke
adaptive M suspension with individually configured springs and
dampers, specially designed anti-roll bars and an additional spring
strut tower brace in the front end, along with variable sport
steering, M Sport brakes and M light-alloy wheels up to 20 inches in
diameter with mixed-size tyres. Meanwhile, the fully electric
all-wheel-drive system helps it achieve outstanding levels of
traction, directional stability and agility.

An intensive testing programme ensures that the motor output, power
transmission, chassis set-up and body attributes work together to
deliver the familiar BMW driving pleasure. The result is highly
impressive driveability in all scenarios: from hard acceleration
through high-speed cornering to relaxed cruising. Even in adverse road
conditions, the car can effortlessly pick up speed.

The BMW i4 shows itself to be a cut above the rest when it comes
to driving comfort as well: its advanced chassis technology and
steering characteristics, plus high levels of ride, vibration and
acoustic comfort translate into easy, fatigue-free driving on long journeys.

Electric all-wheel drive, innovative damper technology and new
near-actuator wheel slip limitation including Launch Control

The top-class powertrain and chassis systems interact with great
precision to produce a driving experience that no competitor can
offer, particularly from a standing start. The electric
all-wheel-drive system in the BMW i4 M50 plays a particularly
effective role here, with the presence of an electric motor at both
the front and rear axle allowing drive power to be channelled to the
road to optimum effect. The electric all-wheel drive reacts with
extreme sensitivity to the speed of the wheels at each axle. If
necessary, it can optimise traction and handling stability by
adjusting the drive torque accordingly, without the traction control
even having to intervene.

The fully variable system can choose exactly the right form of power
transmission for the full range of requirements, from highly efficient
pure rear-wheel drive through to an all-wheel-drive set-up that
maximises traction. Normally, power is relayed solely to the rear
wheels of the BMW i4 M50 to increase its efficiency and range. At
higher levels of acceleration or in response to wheel slip, the motor
acting on the front wheels assumes just the right share of the drive
power to optimise driving dynamics and directional stability.

Near-actuator wheel slip limitation is fitted on both versions of the
rear-wheel-drive BMW i4 eDrive40 and the all-wheel-drive BMW i4 M50,
whose intelligent distribution of power between the front and rear
wheels also keeps the vehicle glued to the road under rapid
acceleration long before the traction limit is reached. The
near-actuator wheel slip limitation is designed to bring the
advantages of rear-wheel drive to the world of electric mobility in
BMW i4 eDrive40 variants, whereas in the BMW i4 M50 it is set up for
optimum, rear-biased distribution of drive torque between the two axles.

Weight-optimised bespoke chassis technology

Optimised for both weight and rigidity, the newly engineered chassis
technology for the BMW i4 provides an outstanding basis for combining
precisely controllable handling with impressive long-distance comfort.

The superb driving qualities of the BMW i4 are partly down to its
balanced weight distribution and its low centre of gravity. The
high-voltage battery is positioned low down in the vehicle floor,
bringing about a drop in the centre of gravity that has a positive
impact on the car’s agility. The centre of gravity is 34mm (BMW
i4 M50) or 53mm (BMW i4 eDrive40 Sport and M Sport) lower than on a
3 Series Saloon.

Standard specification for all model variants also includes rear air
suspension, whose automatic self-levelling feature keeps the car at
a constant ride-height even when carrying a heavy load.

Precisely controllable driving dynamics right up to the limits of performance

While the motor management’s integrated near-actuator wheel slip
limitation function mostly halts loss of traction while accelerating,
the DSC system is responsible for optimising directional stability and
steering capability in demanding situations by selectively applying
the brakes at individual wheels. Its primary functions include the
Anti-lock Braking System, traction control system and electronic
stability control. The easily activated Dynamic Traction Control (DTC)
mode allows a higher degree of wheel slip, helping the driver to
explore the car’s performance limits. It is also easy to engage the
DSC off mode for extremely sporty driving without any brake
intervention to stabilise handling.

Integrated braking system optimises stopping power and pedal feel

The BMW i4 is the only model in its segment to be fitted with an
integrated braking system that delivers outstanding stopping power and
reliable pedal feel. Unwanted pedal feedback is eliminated when
recuperation is being used to slow the car, with Brake Energy
Regeneration at a maximum rate of 195 kW (BMW i4 M50). The integrated
braking system enables the recuperation and brake pressure elements of
the overall stopping force to be combined with great precision.
Consequently, the driver enjoys superb pedal feel in all situations,
as applying the same pressure to the pedal will always generate the
same stopping power.

Adaptive recuperation of energy during a journey can be adjusted

Adaptive and individually regulated recuperation during overrun and
braking allows the efficiency of the drive system in the BMW i4 to be
further increased in a way that no other model in this segment can.
Intelligently connected drive management means the intensity of the
brake energy recuperation can be adapted to the road situation, as
detected by data from the navigation system and the sensors used by
the driver assistance systems.

Sustainability-enhancing advances: fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology

Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology – comprising the electric
motors, power electronics, charging technology and high-voltage
battery – forms the basis for driving pleasure with zero tailpipe
emissions in the BMW i4. Developed by the BMW Group, the standalone
design principle for the electric motors, and their compact
arrangement within a housing shared with the transmission and power
electronics, are key factors in the drive system’s outstanding power
delivery and efficiency. This highly integrated drive technology
results in an improvement in power density over the electric drive
system in the 2020 BMW i3 of around 30 per cent.

The high operating range of the BMW i4 can also be attributed to the
gravimetric energy density of its high-voltage battery, which has been
upped by 20 per cent in comparison to the BMW i3. At the same time,
maximum charging capacity for the latest-generation batteries has now
been increased to 210kW.

The drive units are – like the high-voltage batteries, power
electronics and charging technology – the product of fifth-generation
BMW eDrive technology. The electrically excited motor’s specific ESM
design principle enables typical BMW power delivery with locally
emission-free mobility. The drive system’s high efficiency and
cutting-edge NMC-811 battery cell technology give the car a long
operating range and exceptional everyday usability. Extremely powerful
charging technology with a maximum charging capacity of 200kW for
high-power DC charging means that only short mid-journey stops are
required to replenish the energy content of the high-voltage battery.

The electric motors developed in-house by the BMW Group have an
efficiency factor of 93 per cent in their latest version. They not
only better the figures achieved by current combustion engines (less
than 40 per cent), but also rank among the leading electric drive
units in their class.

The excellent range of the BMW i4 is underpinned by efficiency rather
than ever larger batteries. Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology
therefore resolves the dilemma that has confronted all electric
vehicles in the past and helps to create a blend of sporting
performance, energy efficiency and practical operating range that
clearly sets the BMW i4 apart from its competitors.

The BMW i4 M50 – the first ever fully-electric BMW M model – is
powered by a 190kW electric motor at the front axle and a 230kW
version at the rear, which combine to produce 544hp. The flagship
model’s electric all-wheel-drive system allows drive torque to be
adjusted with incredible speed and precision, thereby maximising
dynamic performance, traction and handling stability. The drive system
technology in the BMW i4 eDrive40 Sport and M Sport promises
sustainable driving pleasure in the way BMW is most famous for: the
power generated instantaneously by its 340hp electric motor is
channelled to the road via the rear wheels.

Enthralling performance with Sport Boost function in the BMW i4 M50

In the BMW i4 M50, the motor driving the rear wheels generates
maximum output of 313hp, while the unit at the front axle produces
258hp. Intelligently controlled interaction between the two electric
drive units ensures the car always makes effortless progress. The
fully variable system is matched exactly to the requirements at any
given moment, offering everything from highly efficient pure
rear-wheel drive through to an all-wheel-drive set-up that maximises traction.

A specially designed boost function that can be activated on demand
brings the BMW M model’s high-performance character even more to the
fore. The Sport Boost function increases the system’s combined drive
power by 68hp to its maximum of 544hp for over ten seconds. At the
same time, combined torque is upped by 65Nm to 795Nm. The burst of
speed is accompanied by an M-specific soundtrack which was composed in
collaboration with Hans Zimmer, to further intensify the performance
experience inside the BMW i4 M50.

Activating the Sport Boost function enables the BMW i4 M50 to race
from 0 to 10km/h in 3.9 seconds. The Sport Boost effect can also be
triggered several times in succession if the high-voltage battery has
sufficient charge. The BMW i4 M50 has an electronically governed top
speed of 225km/h.

Customary BMW sportiness and efficiency in the BMW i4 eDrive40

A lively electric motor teams up with classical rear-wheel drive in
both versions of the BMW i4 eDrive40. Its drive unit develops maximum
output of 340hp between 8,000 and 17,000rpm, placing it on an equal
footing with BMW’s most powerful current six-cylinder in-line diesel
engine. The other key factor in the electric motor’s performance
characteristics is its instantaneous peak torque of 430Nm.The BMW
i4 eDrive40 sprints from 0 to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds. Its top speed is
electronically limited to 190km/h.

Combined Charging Unit allows power to be taken on board at 200kW

New charging technology is also part of the fifth-generation BMW
eDrive toolkit. The Combined Charging Unit (CCU) in the BMW i4 enables
an extremely high level of flexibility when it comes to using charging
stations of different types.

Hooking up the high-voltage battery to a conventional domestic power
socket or a Wallbox allows it to be fed with AC power from both
single-phase and three-phase mains connections, at a charging rate of
up to 11kW. Using this method, the BMW i4 can recharge its battery
from totally empty to 100 per cent in under 8.5 hours.

A significantly higher charging output - and the shorter charging
times this enables - can be accessed by using a DC high-power charging
station. The BMW i4 can charge its high-voltage battery there at up to
200kW. So when hooked up to high-power charging stations of the type
mainly found on major transport routes, it can take enough energy on
board in just ten minutes to increase range by 165kms in the
BMW i4 eDrive40 and 140 kms in the case of the BMW i4 M50.

BMW i4 models in Ireland are supplied complete with the Flexible
Charger offering a charging rate of up to 11kW and a mode 3 charging
cable for public charging stations.

The new generation of the BMW iDrive / Operating System 8

The new BMW iDrive is an instrumental factor in the user experience
on board the BMW i4. The most recent incarnation of the display and
operating system takes the interaction between driver and vehicle into
the digital future. The new BMW Operating System 8 features a new
generation of displays, controls and software, plus extremely powerful
connectivity and data processing. The intuitive, multimodal operation
becomes a natural dialogue between the user and their car, precisely
tailoring all the functions controlled via BMW iDrive to the driver’s
needs and preferences.

The new BMW iDrive was designed with a clear focus on touch operation
and on dialogue-based interaction using natural language.
Consequently, new features available immediately include the expanded
capabilities of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which uses
a new graphic to communicate with the vehicle’s occupants, and the BMW
Curved Display – the all-new fully digital display grouping in the BMW
i4 formed by the information display and control display.

Natural dialogue with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant

The new generation of BMW iDrive also sees the BMW Intelligent
Personal Assistant gaining additional skills. In communication between
people, a lot of information is conveyed non-verbally. The Assistant’s
new visualisation approach, which features spheres of light in
different sizes and brightness levels, gives it more space and forms
of expression. These visuals provides the vehicle occupants with a
clearly visible focal point and recognisable states of activity. When
the user speaks to the Assistant, it appears in a fluid animation and
spreads out engagingly over the displays, without concealing relevant
information. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant can distinguish
who is talking to it and appears on the relevant screen area. A widget
designed specially for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant enables
rapid access to other settings and suggestions.

Advances have also been made in the functionality of the
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. An expanded pool of underlying
data and information has not only made the digital assistant more
intelligent, it has also enabled it to act proactively and according
to context. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant suggests functions
the customer has not yet tried out. For example, if the driver
regularly opens the window at a certain point, the Assistant
recognises the pattern and proactively suggests setting the relevant
GPS coordinates – e.g. the entrance to a car park – as an automatic
opening point.

Expanding functions and updating via Remote Software Upgrade

The new BMW Operating System 8 further enhances the options for
updating the in-car software and expanding its functions. New and
improved functions can be imported quickly and easily over the air,
either using the car’s built-in SIM card or via the My BMW App.
Installation is subsequently launched by the customer and seldom takes
longer than 20 minutes. Remote Software Upgrades are installed free of charge.

Personalisation using the BMW ID

When interacting with the new BMW iDrive, BMW i4 customers benefit
from increasing personalisation of the user experience based on their
BMW ID. This is used to securely store even more personalised settings
and to transfer them between vehicles. A PIN code can be created or
the BMW ID associated with a particular key to prevent other users of
the vehicle from accessing personal data.

When signing in to a vehicle for the first time, simply scanning a QR
code is all it takes to create a new BMW ID on a smartphone. If the
user uses the My BMW App and is therefore already in possession of a
BMW ID, this will be automatically imported into the car via the app,
when the QR code is scanned.

The BMW ID can be created and activated effortlessly and securely in
vehicles with BMW Operating System 8 or BMW Operating System 7. Once
the BMW ID has been imported personal settings for seat and steering
wheel position, exterior mirrors, navigation system, driver assistance
functions, display layouts, shortcuts, favourites and infotainment
system settings will be imported automatically.

Extensive range of circa 40 driver assistance functions

The BMW i4 is the new standard-bearer for driving pleasure in the
world of fully electric mobility. Its vehicle concept, drivetrain and
chassis technology have all been designed to deliver an involving
experience behind the wheel. At the same time, it offers an extensive
range of driver assistance systems that are among the best on the
market. The automated driving and parking systems at work in the BMW
i4 stand out with their wide-ranging functionality and high degree of
availability. The availability of around 40 assistance functions
offered for the i4 either as standard or optionally enhance safety and
comfort when driving and parking – in adverse weather conditions and
unclear road situations alike.

The primary mission of the chassis technology and now also automated
driving technology in BMW Group models is to generate a positive and
emotionally engaging experience for the customer. The focus is on the
pleasure of driving, and here the assistance systems play a key role
alongside the model-specific driving characteristics. The BMW i4
offers customers the best of both worlds: they can enjoy dynamic
driving pleasure by taking the controls themselves or use the
assistance functions to make certain driving situations and parking
safer and less stressful.

Gran coupé style with the comfort and practicality of a
four-door car
The first fully electric model
developed for the BMW brand’s core segment takes the form of a gran
coupé, with a sleek profile that has optimised aerodynamics with Cd of
only 0.24. The BMW i4 combines the hallmark sporting aesthetic of the
brand’s coupés with the comfort of a four-door car and a practical
appeal enhanced by features including a large tailgate. The stretched
proportions and clean lines bring fully-electric exclusivity and the
sporting prowess for which BMW is renowned to the premium midsize
segment. The centres of innovation in the BMW i4 – the blanked-off
kidney grille, the battery technology in the floor area of the car and
the sporty diffuser elements, which optimise the car’s aerodynamics –
are highlighted by accents in BMW i Blue.

Stretched proportions, flowing lines

The BMW i4 has a vehicle length of 4,785mm, width of 1,852mm, height
of 1,448mm with a 2,856mm wheelbase. The 1,600mm front track and
1,630mm rear track create the ideal foundations for a chassis set-up
tuned to enhance cornering performance and are central to the powerful
stance of the BMW i4. Short overhangs, slim pillars, doors with
frameless windows and a roofline that flows smoothly into the rear
underscore a silhouette that very much fits the BMW coupé mould.

Innovative interior with driver-focused cockpit design and BMW Curved Display

The interior of the BMW i4 fuses the clear design language and modern
premium ambience with an extremely driver-focused cockpit design. The
purely electric gran coupé comes as standard with a very slim and low
instrument panel, which provides the perfect stage for the latest
version of the fully-digital display grouping. The innovative BMW
Curved Display brings the information display behind the steering
wheel and the control display of the BMW iDrive control/operation
system together, into a frameless, single-piece glass surface angled
towards the driver. The 12.3-inch information display and 14.9-inch
control display effectively merge into a single driver-focused unit.

The BMW Curved Display in the BMW i4 is held in place by a supporting
structure that is concealed from the occupants’ view, so it appears to
be standing freely in the cockpit. The high-quality display technology
using anti-reflective glass also makes it possible to dispense with
the binnacle usually required to shield the readouts from sunlight.

The rest of the interior design is likewise geared towards providing
a highly involved driving experience. The BMW i4 is fitted as standard
with sport seats and a sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons.

The BMW Live Cockpit Plus fitted as standard in the BMW i4 includes
an audio system with DAB+ tuner, six speakers and an output of 100
watts. For those looking for the ultimate sound experience, there is
the Harman Kardon surround sound system, complete with 16 speakers and
a digital seven-channel amplifier delivering 464 watts of audio power
which is optional on the i4 eDrive40 and standard on the i4 M50.

Acoustic pedestrian protection and BMW IconicSounds Electric

The electric drive system powering the BMW i4 produces not only zero
local emissions but also almost nothing in the way of sound when
driving at low speeds. To alert other road users that the i4 is
approaching, it comes with an acoustic pedestrian protection system
as standard. Developed specially for electrified BMW vehicles, the
artificially generated sound is emitted through exterior speakers and
is active up to driving speeds of up to 13mph.

An unmistakable, model-specific acoustic experience can also be
enjoyed in the interior of the BMW i4. Pressing the Start/Stop button
sparks an inspiring acoustic accompaniment that builds anticipation
for the all-electric driving experience to come. This sound production
was created as part of a collaboration between film music composer and
Academy Award winner Hans Zimmer and Creative Director Sound at the
BMW Group Renzo Vitale.

BMW i4 M50 with performance-led styling cues

Model-specific design features give the BMW i4 M50 eye-catching looks
that clearly reference its sporting character. The front apron has the
signature U-shaped graphic of BMW M models. Additional side air
intakes optimise brake cooling. The BMW kidney grille surround and the
vertical trim around the air curtains come in Cerium Grey, likewise
the exterior mirror caps and the inlays in the outer edges of the rear
apron, while the air breathers, the side sill trim strips and rear
bumper trim are painted in High-gloss Black. An M-specific spoiler on
the tailgate and, for Irish customers, the free choice between either
18-inch M aerodynamic wheels or 19-inch M light double spoke alloy
wheels, round off the performance-oriented appearance of the BMW i4 M50.

The BMW i4 M50 also benefits from Vernasca leather upholstery, M
Adaptive Suspension, electric memory seats, M seatbelts, Driving
Assistant, wireless phone charging, Aluminium Rhombicle Anthracite
Trim and Live Cockpit Professional including Head-up display.

BMW i4 eDrive40: choice of Sport and M Sport trim
levels
The M Sport trim for the BMW i4 eDrive40 also
conveys the car’s dynamic ability. Standout features of its
specification include 18-inch M aerodynamic wheels with mixed tyres,
Live Cockpit Plus and Black Alcantara/Sensatec. It also shares the
same M Sport Exterior Styling, M Sport Spoiler and Aluminium Rhombicle
Anthracite Trim of the flagship BMW i4 M50.

BMW i4 eDrive40 Sport customers in Ireland can choose either 17-inch
aerodynamic alloy wheels or 18-inch alloy wheels with a double spoke
design within the standard specification. Live Cockpit Plus is also
included on all models and the interior is set off with a Sport
leather steering wheel, High-Gloss Black interior trim and Black Alcantara/Sensatec.

Equipment standard to all versions includes a reversing camera,
Parking Assistant, automatic air conditioning, ambient lighting and
LED lights front and back. A host of options are also available,
enabling customers to personalise their i4 to their own individual requirements.

Production at BMW Group Plant
Munich
using purely green power, monitored raw materials extraction,
high proportion of natural and recycled materials
The
BMW i4 will be produced at BMW Group Plant Munich. Following the
implementation of intensive structural and remodelling measures, the
cutting-edge manufacturing facility is now equipped to build the
all-electric BMW i4 alongside models with combustion engines and
plug-in hybrid drive systems.

Vehicle production and the manufacturing of battery cells is achieved
using 100 per cent green energy, while the specific design principle
for the electric motors allows the use of rare earth metals to be
avoided. For the high-voltage battery, controlled, transparent and
sustainable extraction of cobalt and lithium have been employed.
Elsewhere, production has also included extensive use of secondary raw
materials, natural materials and recycled materials.

Manufacture of the BMW i4 in Munich represents a case study in
flexible, efficient and intelligently integrated production processes.
These processes characterise the latest (second) phase in the
company’s transformation towards digitally networked, sustainable and
electrically powered mobility. It is underpinned by the intelligent
vehicle architectures designed from the outset for the integration of
BMW eDrive technology, and by highly flexible production. This unique
combination of factors ensures maximum flexibility and exchangeability
between the different drive forms, which will allow the plant to
respond to changes in customer demand at any time.

Munich. The future of driving pleasure is electric,
locally emission-free – and characterised by a typically BMW sporting
flair expressed not only in dynamic talent, but also through an
emotionally rich aural experience. BMW IconicSounds Electric brings an
unmistakable sound portfolio to BMW models powered by a fully electric
or plug-in hybrid drive system. The collaboration between composer and
curator Hans Zimmer and Renzo Vitale, Creative Director Sound at the
BMW Group, has produced a distinctive drive soundtrack which customers
will soon be able to experience in a version developed specially for
electric BMW M cars. “Every BMW has its own character, which is
reflected in the sound it makes,” says film music creator and Academy
Award winner Zimmer. “So for the electrically driven BMW M models we
have developed a drive system sound which accentuates their emotional
driving experience particularly vividly and ensures their performance
can be felt with even greater intensity.”

Hans Zimmer had previously been involved in the development of an
inspiring ready-to-drive sound for electrically powered BMWs which
instils a sense of excitement at the prospect of electric driving when
the Start/Stop button is pressed. The latest chapter in this
collaboration covers drive sounds for the BMW iX and BMW i4, including
a differentiated sound for the M-specification version of the BMW i4.

While the hush of electric driving offers an unprecedented level of
comfort, the driving experience loses a degree of emotionality. This
is where BMW IconicSounds Electric steps in to put smiles on the faces
of customers keen to experience Sheer Driving Pleasure with all the
senses. In the future, electric driving pleasure will be enhanced by
acoustic feedback to every movement of the accelerator. Like the
on-board driving modes selectable at the touch of a button, the drive
system sound also takes its cues from the driving situation at hand
and the driver’s personal preferences. In the basic setting, BMW
IconicSounds Electric employs a strikingly transparent timbre with
spherical components to convey the basic character of an electrically
driven BMW brand model. An immersive and pleasant atmosphere is
created initially in the BMW i4 in COMFORT mode. But when the driver
steps on the accelerator, the direct relationship between how the car
is being driven and the sounds it makes is immediately revealed: the
sound experience deepens as load and speed increase. In SPORT mode, in
particular, the car’s aural spectrum is more dominant and powerful,
the sound providing a constant commentary on the driving situation.
Drive system processes are registered within milliseconds and
acceleration, load changes or recuperation given a suitable acoustic
accompaniment. Only when the vehicle is travelling in ECO PRO mode is
the acoustic feedback reduced to nothing. Here, the silence of the
drive system underscores the driver’s decision to adopt an
ultra-efficient driving style.

In the version developed specifically for electrified BMW M models,
the drive sound of the BMW i4 is charged with extra energy. Added to
which, the differentiation between COMFORT and SPORT mode is
especially strong. Overall, the drive system note displays a less
harmonious but engagingly rousing and technical sonic profile.
Acceleration sparks a rich intensification of the soundtrack’s
development, authentically reflecting the car’s performance character.
“When you press the pedal of an M car, you suddenly get goosebumps all
over your body,” says sound designer Renzo Vitale. “We translated this
feeling into a drive sound that expresses a fusion of superior power
and flowing energy.”

Hans Zimmer and Renzo Vitale had already co-developed the drive
system sound for the BMW Vision M NEXT revealed in 2019 and the BMW
Concept i4 presented the following year. Numerous learnings from this
creative process have now been channelled into the design of the sound
for future series-produced vehicles.

The new drive sounds developed as part of the collaboration with Hans
Zimmer are expected to feature in the BMW i4 and BMW iX over the
course of 2022. IconicSounds Electric comes as standard in the BMW iX
and can be specified as an option for the BMW i4. In cars with earlier
build dates, the new sounds can be imported retrospectively via Remote
Software Upgrade, should the customer wish. The new spectrum includes
one ready-to-drive sound and one stop sound, plus a drive system sound
which will be made available in the relevant version for BMW models
and BMW M cars with electrified drive system.

Press Contact: Aisling Brogan
Tel: +353-1-8628-203
E-mail: aisling.brogan@bmw.ie

BMW i,Press Release,Research & Development,i20,G26,iX,i4,Acoustics, Aerodynamics,Product,BMW

Munich. Vehicles will need to be purely electric,
sustainable in every way, more intelligent than ever and capable of
conversing naturally with the driver to provide the driving pleasure
of the future, as showcased by BMW at the Auto Shanghai 2021 show. And
drivers will soon be able to experience this progressive form of
personal mobility on the road in the BMW iX. The new model will
celebrate its world premiere in real-life, series-produced form as the
centrepiece of BMW’s presence in Shanghai, and its market launch in
China will get underway over the course of 2021. The BMW Group’s new
technology flagship embodies the company’s innovative talents in the
areas of design, electric mobility, driving pleasure, sustainability,
luxury and connectivity.

The BMW iX is first model in the brand’s line-up to feature the new
Operating System 8 and the latest generation of BMW iDrive, which
turns the interaction between the driver and vehicle into an
intuitive, personal and emotionally engaging experience. At the same
time, Operating System 8 provides the basis for the seamless
integration of additional digital services. The enhanced possibilities
for using market-specific apps in China that this enables brings
another focal point to BMW’s presentation at Auto Shanghai 2021.
Additional highlights include the world premiere of the BMW 7 Series
Two-Tone special-edition model created exclusively for customers in
China and a look ahead to the fully electric BMW i4 in M Sport specification.

Auto Shanghai is one of the world’s largest and most significant
automotive shows and offers a fascinating overview of the latest
industry trends and innovations once again this year. On 21 – 28 April
2021, automotive manufacturers, suppliers and service providers from
around the world will flock to the halls of the National Exhibition
and Convention Center (NECC) in China’s commercial capital to show off
their new models, products and technologies. As an open-to-the-public
event, Auto Shanghai 2021 will be held in compliance with strict
hygiene regulations and feature extensive use of digital technology.

The BMW iX: opening the gates to a new era of personal
mobility.
The physical world premiere of the BMW iX
provides visitors to Auto Shanghai 2021 with a window into a new era
of personal mobility. Developed around the BMW Group’s new, modular
scalable toolkit as a modern Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), the new
model espouses a future-focused view of design, sustainability,
driving pleasure, versatility and luxury. The BMW iX is wrapped in a
clean-sheet design majoring on precision and minimalism. It combines
the locally emission-free driving pleasure and sporting agility
provided by electric all-wheel drive and a persuasive operating range
with a character profile dedicated to sustainability from the ground
up. This covers the whole lifecycle of the vehicle – from the sourcing
of raw materials through manufacturing and use to subsequent recycling.

The BMW iX will be offered in two model variants when it goes on sale
in late 2021. The electric motors fitted in the BMW iX xDrive50 and
BMW iX xDrive40 are – like the power electronics, charging technology
and high-voltage batteries – the product of fifth-generation BMW
eDrive technology. This means output, dynamism, long-range driving
ability and efficiency are all outstanding. The electric all-wheel
drive of the BMW iX xDrive50 channels maximum output of more than 370
kW/500 hp to the road, enabling acceleration of 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph)
in under 5.0 seconds, while also posting a range of more than 600
kilometres (373 miles) and power consumption below 21 kWh per 100
kilometres in the WLTP test cycle. The BMW iX xDrive40 has an output
of more than 240 kW/300 hp and completes the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h
(62 mph) in a shade over 6.0 seconds. Its range is in excess of 400
kilometres (249 miles) and consumption less than 20.0 kWh per 100
kilometres. (All figures relating to performance, energy consumption
and range are predicted values based on the car’s current stage of development.)

Like its electric all-wheel drive, the versatile interior of the new
car also fits the character of a modern SAV. The vehicle concept and
design of the BMW iX attaches a whole new level of focus to the needs
of those on board. The car has been developed from the inside out. Its
interior offers innovative options for using the time during a journey
– and enjoying relaxation, safety, security, and a new form of luxury
in the process.

The new technology toolkit, making its debut in the BMW iX, also
underpins significant advances in the areas of connectivity and
digital services. For example, the tech is designed to be able to
process 20 times more data than existing models. And that means many
times more sensor data can be processed. The sensor technology itself
is likewise more powerful than ever. The BMW iX is also 5G-capable,
enabling fast and reliable transfer of large quantities of data
between the vehicle and the BMW Cloud.

The new BMW iDrive with seamlessly integrated digital services
from Tencent.
The new generation of BMW iDrive lays on
an all-encompassing, intelligent, multi-sensory experience tailored to
the driver. A natural dialogue is created between the user and their
vehicle with the aim of precisely tailoring all the functions
controlled via BMW iDrive to the driver’s needs and preferences as the
situation demands.

For many years now, BMW has offered customers around the world
extensive integration of digital services from third-party providers
via its iDrive system. Market-specific applications and services have
also been integrated seamlessly into the vehicle’s operating system.
Display and operation here will be familiar to customers from their
smartphones. As well as the offerings from Apple and Google, apps
relevant to the Chinese market provided by local platforms are also
integrated. The introduction of BMW Operating System 8 and the latest
iDrive generation takes the integration of services from Chinese
platform Tencent, in particular, to a new level.

The Operating System 7 found in existing BMW models already enables
integration of applications from Tencent which are extremely popular
in China. The key ingredient here is the mini program platform from
Tencent, which allows digital services in the areas of communication,
travel, entertainment, infotainment, edutainment and gaming to be
integrated seamlessly into the vehicle’s operating system. New
features presented with the introduction of the latest-generation BMW
iDrive include the newly developed integration of digital
communication service WeChat.

Like the mini program platform as a whole, the WeChat application is
integrated natively into the BMW Operating System. This means the
functions included in the WeChat app can be operated in extremely
user-friendly fashion via the on-board iDrive system, and are viewed
on the BMW Curved Display in the familiar way. The various content is
shown according to need and context on the information display or
control display in the digital screen grouping. The individual
functions can be activated quickly and intuitively via the operating
system’s selectable apps menu.

The new integrated applications from Tencent will be available from
the launch of the BMW iX in China. The initial range of WeChat
functions that can be used comfortably, easily and safely in the
vehicle via these applications include WeChat phone calls, voice
messaging and sharing of location data, which can then be adopted
immediately as a navigation destination. Additional functions and apps
will also be integrated into the BMW Operating System and updated
using the Tencent mini program platform in the future. You can find
further information on the new generation of BMW iDrive here.

Stylish luxury for China: the BMW 7 Series Two-Tone
special-edition model.
A new special edition of the
BMW 7 Series embodying a unique combination of luxury, poise and
exclusivity is set to be unveiled for the first time at Auto Shanghai
2021. The BMW 7 Series Two-Tone exudes an exceptionally stylish allure
with its Cashmere Silver metallic/Aventurine Red metallic paintwork.
The luxury sedan is based on the 12-cylinder BMW M760Li xDrive and
will be produced in a limited run of just 25 examples exclusively for
customers in China.

As well as BMW’s market-specific interpretation of exclusive driving
enjoyment, visitors to Auto Shanghai 2021 will also be greeted by the
latest expression of race-car thrills for everyday use – as BMW M GmbH
presents its new high-performance sports cars for the premium midsize
segment. The BMW M3 Competition Sedan (fuel consumption combined: 9.8
– 9.6 l/100 km [28.8 – 29.4 mpg imp] in the WLTP cycle; CO2 emissions
combined: 224 – 219 g/km in WLTP) and BMW M4 Competition Coupé (fuel
consumption combined: 9.8 – 9.6 l/100 km [28.8 – 29.4 mpg imp] in
WLTP; CO2 emissions combined: 224 – 219 g/km in WLTP) will be launched
in China imminently. The signature M characteristics of the 375 kW/510
hp six-cylinder in-line engine powering the two models, chassis
technology optimised using racing car expertise and new setup
customisation options provide owners with an inimitable experience of
performance at work.

A look ahead to the BMW i4 in M Sport
specification.
At Auto Shanghai 2021 the BMW i4 will
offer a first impression of the BMW i4 with the M Sport equipment line
set to be made available in China and other markets.
The BMW i4
is a fully electric four-door gran coupé, whose market launch is
scheduled for 2021. Its perfect balance of customary BMW sporting
ability, long-distance comfort and sustainable performance is unique
in this segment. The BMW i4 model range will include a selection of
variants enabling a range of up to 590 km / 367 miles in the WLTP
cycle or up to 300 miles in EPA testing. The BMW i4 develops output of
up to 390 kW /530 hp, enabling it to accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h (62
mph) in four seconds.

Press Contact: Aisling Brogan
Tel: +353-1-8628-203
E-mail: aisling.brogan@bmw.ie

Press Release,M3,Coupé,iX,i4,Product,BMW,BMW M
