Defined design revisions, enhanced standard equipment and progressive
digital technology identify the latest generation of the BMW X5 and
BMW X6.

Together, the finely-honed changes further strengthen the success of
the firmly established BMW model pairing in the luxury Sports Activity
Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupé segments.

The smoothly assured character of the new BMW X5 is now emphasised by
particularly robust design features and the optional illuminated BMW
Iconic Glow kidney grille. The dynamic nature of the new BMW X6,
meanwhile, is underscored by features included in the optimised M
Sport specification.

The line-up of power units has undergone a comprehensive overhaul,
leading to a significant increase in the electric range of the BMW X5
xDrive50e with plug-in hybrid drive system and the introduction of 48V
mild-hybrid technology across all other models. Also pointing the way
into the future are the latest driving assistant systems, plus the
addition of the BMW Curved Display and BMW Operating System 8.

These extensive revisions represent all the ingredients required to
strengthen the position of the BMW X5 as the global market leader in
its segment and underpin the leading status of the BMW X6. Both models
will continue to be built at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg

The new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 are available to order now, priced from
€96,500 and €123,640 respectively and the Irish market launch will get
underway in April 2023.

The new BMW X5: slim headlights, illuminated BMW kidney
grille
The new BMW X5 and BMW X6 proudly adopt the new
design for the BMW kidney grille and narrower signature BMW
headlights, with arrow-shaped daytime driving lights that serve as
turn signal indicators. Equipped with Adaptive LED headlights and high
beam assist as standard, they can also be specified with M Shadowline
lights with black inlays.

The BMW kidney grille has a surround and bars in Pearl-effect Chrome
while the BMW Iconic Glow is introduced as part of the M Sport Pro
pack. The Iconic Glow illumination is activated when one of the doors
is opened and can be switched on or off manually by the driver.
Vertical air curtains positioned to the outer edges emphasise the
width of the car. The lower air intake has a horizontal trim detail in
Pearl-effect Chrome and triangular apertures in its outer areas.

Newly designed air breathers, LED rear lights with X
motif
The air breathers in the front side panels of the
BMW X5 sport a striking curving element at the front (finished in
Pearl-effect Chrome as standard or in Black on M Sport and M60i
models), and three horizontal blades at their trailing edge. The BMW
X5 xDrive50e also has “electrified by i” badging here and the BMW X5
M60i xDrive features its model designation.

The new BMW X5 now comes as standard with Satin Aluminium roof rails
and Exterior Line trim, as well as underride protection in Glacier
Silver and new geometry for the rear apron. The redesigned rear lights
turn heads with their striking sculptural fibre-optic light guide
elements. The familiar L shape is reflected horizontally, creating a
visually powerful X motif. Pulsating turn signal indicators at the
rear round off the impressive lighting.

The new BMW X6: expressive front end with large air
intakes
The new BMW X6 again features slim headlight
units with arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements, optionally
specified as M Shadowline lights. The BMW Iconic Glow kidney grille is
available as part of the M Sport Pro pack, while M Sport models
feature an octagonal front-end signature below the BMW kidney grille,
with striking side apertures and black surfaces.

Powerful rear end styling with slim lights extending into the
tailgate
M-specific side skirts and M High-gloss
Shadowline trim reflect the agile character of the new BMW X6. The
rear apron has an insert in Dark Shadow, while the exhaust tailpipe
trims are trapezoidal in shape. The slim rear lights reach far into
the tailgate, their light signature echoing the familiar L shape.

M Sport and flagship M60i models with distinctive design
features
M Sport models bring an extra sense of
excitement, with their M-specific front apron design, roof rails in
Black high-gloss, M High-gloss Shadowline trim, plus rear apron with
Dark Shadow inlay and trapezoidal exhaust trims.

The range-topping BMW X5 M60i xDrive and BMW X6 M60i xDrive feature
bespoke double bars and an M logo for the BMW kidney grille, M
exterior mirror caps in Black high-gloss and M quad-pipe style exhaust
tailpipe trim. The new BMW X6 M60i xDrive also has a rear spoiler in
Black high-gloss.

The optional M Sport Pro pack features the BMW Iconic Glow kidney
grille, Shadowline headlights, Extended Shadowline trim, an M Sport
braking system with red brake callipers, M Sport exhaust (standard on
eight-cylinder models, not available for the BMW X5 xDrive50e) and M
Sport seat belts.

The new M Marina Bay Blue metallic and M Isle of Man Green metallic
are exclusive to the BMW X5 M60i xDrive and BMW X6 M60i xDrive
respectively. All models can be ordered in one solid and seven
metallic colours, with the latter including new Blue Ridge Mountain,
Brooklyn Grey, Skyscraper Grey and Frozen Pure Grey shades. There’s
also a choice of four BMW Individual paint finishes.

Customers can also choose from around 40 BMW Individual special
paintwork shades, including metallic variants such as Atlantis and
Velvet Blue, as well as solid or matt finishes. These exclusive paint
options are meticulously applied by hand with the spectrum of colours
expanding all the time.

Exceptional comfort twinned with optimum
practicality
The new BMW X5 combines outstanding
travelling comfort over long distances with a high level of
versatility. The BMW X5 xDrive30d can be specified with a third row of
seats as an option. The capacity of the load area can be expanded from
650 litres to a maximum 1,870 litres (BMW X5 xDrive50e: 500 – 1,720
litres). A two-section split tailgate enables easy loading of items
into the boot. Rear-seat passengers of the BMW X6 also enjoy excellent
long-distance comfort. With all five seats occupied, the boot still
offers 580 litres of load capacity behind the high-opening tailgate.
By utilising the 40 : 20 : 40 split/folding rear-seat backrest, the
load compartment can be expanded to 1,530 litres.

Fully digital BMW Curved Display with intuitive touch
control
The BMW Curved Display is at the heart of the
interior redesign for the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. It is made up of
a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and a
14.9-inch control display, both located behind a single glass surface.
The touch control functionality of the BMW control display offers a
significant reduction in the number of buttons and controls. The
automatic climate system is now operated via permanently displayed
control graphics on the BMW Curved Display.

Instrument panel now as standard with Sensafin surfacing and
highly effective light bar
The newly designed
instrument panel with surfacing in leather-like Sensafin (now
standard) highlights the interior’s premium feel. The central air
vents are extremely slim and integrated into the instrument panel
almost out of sight. BMW X5 M60i xDrive and BMW X6 M60i xDrive models
add an extra touch of elegance with a broad, curving trim element in
standard fine wood or Fineline Black metal effect.

Also new is the ambient light bar with crystalline surface structure
and LED backlighting integrated below the trim element in the front
passenger area. The relevant model lettering – “X5” or “X6” – is added
to the light bar’s graphic; in the two flagship models it displays the
M logo.

The light distribution, brightness and colour for the interior
illumination can be configured via the iDrive menu with a choice of 15
colours. The light bar now steers the brightening of the interior
illumination as the driver approaches the car, dimming from back to
front in a flowing movement when they lock it. It also signals an
incoming telephone call with a dynamic chaser light. The ambient
lighting system’s range of functions also includes the Welcome Light
Carpet – which projects an eye-catching image onto the ground when the
doors are unlocked or opened – and pulsating light signals on the
inner panelling of an open door when the engine is running.

Control panel in the centre console with new selector
lever
With additional touch-sensitive surfaces, the new
centre console control panel includes the iDrive Controller,
Start/Stop button, electric parking brake, and settings for optional
air suspension and off-road modes. Also here are the Driving
Experience Control buttons and the new gear selector lever.

Standard sport seats in new Sensafin trim
The
standard front sport seats in the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 offer
outstanding lateral support. They are heated, feature lumbar support
and offer electric adjustment options for height, seat angle, backrest
angle and backrest width, including a memory function on the driver’s
side. Cushioned knee pads on the sides of the centre console bring
additional sporting appeal to the interior of the BMW X6.

The seat surfaces in standard Sensafin trim can be ordered in a
choice of three colours. With their high-quality, vegan material
properties, bold quilting and decorative perforation, they offer
enhanced seating comfort. Four BMW Individual Merino extended leather
upholstery and three BMW Individual full Merino leather upholstery
variants are optional. Active seat ventilation and massage functions
are available as part of the Comfort Plus Pack.

Standard Comfort Pack, standout options
The new
Comfort Pack includes seat heating for the outer rear seats and a Heat
Comfort package, which brings heating for the steering wheel,
driver/front passenger door armrests and centre console. The “thermo”
function for the cup holders keeps drinks cool or warm as required.

The optional Sky Lounge panoramic glass sunroof generates an
exclusive aura when darkness falls, with LED light spreading evenly
across the glass surfaces to illuminate more than 15,000 graphic
patterns and generate a display reminiscent of a starlit sky.

With its 16 speakers and 415-watt amplifier, the optional Harman
Kardon surround sound system further enhances the on-board acoustic
experience. Meanwhile, the optional Bowers & Wilkins Diamond
Surround Sound System with 20 speakers and 1,500-watt amplifier lays
on a particularly impressive listening experience.

More power, more electric range: BMW X5 xDrive50e with new
plug-in hybrid drive system
A straight-six petrol
engine joins forces with an electric drive unit in the new BMW X5
xDrive50e to produce 490hp (including temporary boost effect) – an
increase of 96hp over the outgoing model – and combined torque of
700Nm (+100Nm).

The latest incarnation of the 3.0-litre straight-six engine with BMW
TwinPower Turbo technology uses the Miller cycle, shortening the
opening time of the intake valves. This unit also features redesigned
combustion chambers and intake ports, a new dual injection system, an
ignition system with active coil and a cylinder head with integrated
exhaust manifold. The petrol engine’s nominal output of 313hp
represents an increase of 27hp on the unit it replaces, with torque
peaking at 450Nm.

The electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport
transmission on the new BMW X5 xDrive50e boasts an increased power
density in excess of 5.0kW/kg. The new synchronous motor produces
197hp (+84hp) while the upper rev limit has been raised to 11,500rpm.
Off the line, the new BMW X5 xDrive50e takes just 4.8 seconds to reach
62mph from rest.

The motor draws its energy from a high-voltage lithium-ion battery
integrated into the underbody, a product of fifth-generation BMW
eDrive technology. The battery can store 25.7kWh of usable energy, an
increase of almost 25 per cent compared with the preceding generation.
A new Combined Charging Unit supports both single-phase and
three-phase charging, doubling the maximum AC charging rate to 7.4kW.
The electric motor’s efficiency and the system of intelligent energy
management, including adaptive recuperation, results in an electric
range of 94 – 110 kilometres * in the WLTP cycle.

Latest-generation 48V mild-hybrid technology for all petrol
and diesel engines
48V mild-hybrid technology enhances
the power delivery in all petrol and diesel variants of the new BMW X5
and BMW X6. All combustion engines are now combined with a new
eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission featuring an electric motor
in its compact housing, generating a boost of up to 12hp and 200Nm of
torque. The mild-hybrid system can be used for driving purely on
electric power at very low speeds in the BMW X6 xDrive40i.

The energy required for the electric power boost is stored in a 48V
battery located in the engine compartment. It is charged during
overrun and braking by means of adaptive recuperation.

Newly developed 530hp 4.4-litre V8 engine for the two BMW M
models
The range-topping BMW X5 M60i xDrive and BMW X6
M60i xDrive are powered by a newly developed V8 petrol engine. The
4.4-litre power unit can trace its genes to renowned BMW M and racing
machines and utilises the thermodynamic benefits of a cross-bank
exhaust manifold, bank-symmetrical turbochargers and external engine
oil cooling. The engine teams up with the 48V mild-hybrid technology
to generate 530hp and 750Nm, allowing the new BMW M models to sprint
from 0 to 62mph in 4.3 seconds. The standard M Sport exhaust system
provides a rich, sporting soundtrack.

More power, lower emissions: new six-cylinder in-line petrol
engine for the BMW X6 xDrive40i
The power unit of the
new BMW X6 xDrive40i is part of a new generation of six-cylinder
in-line engines. The 3.0-litre unit’s 380hp is up by 47hp compared
with its predecessor, while peak torque rises by 70Nm to 520Nm – and
can be boosted to 540Nm with the mild hybrid system. It enables the
new BMW X6 xDrive40i to sprint from 0 to 62mph in 5.4 seconds.

This engine also benefits from innovations in the combustion process,
camshaft control, injection, ignition system and exhaust gas routing,
plus the latest VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control.

BMW X5 xDrive30d and BMW X6 xDrive30d with updated
six-cylinder in-line diesel engine
Upgrades to the
six-cylinder in-line diesel engine in the new BMW X5 xDrive30d and BMW
X6 xDrive30d have also yielded improvements to fuel economy and
emissions. New steel pistons enable higher combustion pressures, while
the oil separation process and common-rail direct injection system
have also been enhanced. These innovations combine with the 48V mild
hybrid technology to develop a maximum 298hp and peak torque of 670Nm,
enabling 0 to 62mph in 6.1 seconds.

New eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission with Launch
Control and Sprint function
The latest-generation eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission
fitted as standard in the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 comes with a host of
innovations over and above the electric motor integrated into its
housing. The unit’s internal efficiency, vibration damping and shift
timing have all been optimised, while shift characteristics are now
adapted to the Driving Experience Control switch setting.

As well as gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, the eight-speed
Steptronic Sport transmission also adds a Launch Control function. In
eight-cylinder and M Sport models, drivers will also be able to make
use of the Sprint function for a quick burst of speed.

BMW xDrive with rear-wheel-drive bias
BMW xDrive
intelligent all-wheel drive maximises traction, agility and
directional stability in the new BMW X5 and BMW X6. The rear-biased
approach preferred by the xDrive system underscores the sporty driving
attributes of both models. In the new BMW X5 M60i xDrive and BMW X6
M60i xDrive, this set-up and the M Sport rear differential combine to
deliver exceptional performance.

Adaptive M suspension standard on M Sport versions
Adaptive M suspension is fitted as standard on all M
Sport models. Electronically controlled dampers refine handling
dynamics as well as primary ride comfort. The dampers respond
adaptively both to road surface conditions and to driving style. The
driver can choose between a comfort-focused mode and a stiffer damper
setting for a sportier experience.

Ride height adjustment at the touch of a button or by
smartphone
For off-road driving, the optional air
suspension (standard on BMW X5 xDrive50e) allows the vehicle body to
be raised by 20 or 40mm (depending on vehicle speed) at the press of a
button, or lowered by up to 40mm when stationary for easier loading.
This can be activated from the driver’s seat, a button built into the
tailgate or, for the first time, via the My BMW App.

The optional xOffroad package for straight-six models includes
adaptive two-axle air suspension, the M Sport differential and four
driving modes tailored to the conditions: xSnow, xSand, xGravel and xRocks.

Integral Active Steering for greater agility, comfort and
manoeuvrability
Integral Active Steering is standard on
the eight-cylinder models and an option for all others. With the
system, the rear wheels are turned in either the same or opposite
direction to the front wheels, depending on road speed. The rear
wheels can now be turned by up to three degrees almost until the car
is at a standstill, further reducing its turning circle.

Adaptive M suspension Pro with active roll
stabilisation
Another option available for all variants
except the BMW X5 xDrive50e is the adaptive M suspension Pro. This
package comprises not just M-specific dampers, Integral Active
Steering and the M Sport differential, but also an active roll

Stop Assistant, Active Lane Change and Merging Assistant complete the package.

Parking Assistant Pro: enter and exit spaces by
smartphone
Standard specification includes the Reversing
Assist Camera and Parking Assistant, upgraded to include drive-off
monitoring and the Trailer Assistant. The Parking Assistant helps the

to the road. The system is now able to take its bearings from any road
markings and the kerb, and can carry out acceleration, braking and
gear changes required.

The standard Reversing Assistant offers the option of automated
reversing in confined spaces or situations where the driver does not
have a clear view.

The Parking Assistant Pro’s Manoeuvre Assistant can store far more
complex manoeuvres using GPS and trajectory data, and can remember as
many as ten manoeuvres at different locations. Drivers can control the
functionality from inside the vehicle or using their Apple iPhone.

Natural dialogue with the BMW Intelligent Personal
Assistant
The new BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant has
gained additional skills. Naturally formulated spoken instructions can
now be used to adjust the air conditioning, open a window or operate
the panoramic glass roof. Various functions of the driver assistance
systems can likewise be voice controlled.

Precision navigating with Augmented View in the information
display
The new Augmented View function is included
as part of the optional BMW Live Cockpit Pro functionality offered in
the Technology pack. It enables exceptionally accurate guidance by
supplementing the navigation system’s map view. A live video stream
from the driver’s perspective can be shown on either the control or
information display, augmented by supplementary information.

BMW Digital Key Plus: a full-functionality car key
The now standard Comfort Access feature includes the
BMW Digital Key Plus, enabling customers to lock and unlock their car
via ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology from a compatible
smartphone. There is no need to even remove the smartphone from their
pocket as they approach the car. The BMW Digital Key Plus can be set
up using the My BMW App and can be shared with up to five others.

BMW IconicSounds Electric for the BMW X5
xDrive50e
With BMW IconicSounds Electric included as
standard on the BMW X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid, the joy of driving
while generating zero local emissions is accompanied by a special
sound design inside the car that provides feedback on every movement
of the accelerator pedal. The car’s soundtrack was developed in
collaboration with film score composer Hans Zimmer. Different versions
of the drive sound are created depending on the mode selected with the
Driving Experience Control switch.

Innovative functions for fully electric driving and
user-friendly charging with the BMW X5 xDrive50e
The
BMW eDrive Zone function included as standard in the BMW X5 xDrive50e
can automatically initiate the switch to pure-electric driving mode
when entering city centres, making the most of the plug-in hybrid’s
potential for locally emission-free mobility. This function is already
available in 138 European cities, with the help of geofencing
technology and GPS.

The new BMW X5 xDrive50e is supplied to customers in Europe with a
BMW Charging Card, a charging cable (mode 3) for use at public
charging stations and the Flexible Fast Charger. As well as the latest

Streaming on the control display
The new BMW X5
and BMW X6 allow the front passengers to watch video-on-demand
services on the control display. Starting with YouTube, the range of
available services is set to expand as the BMW Group adds further
third-party apps.

The power of BMW ID and My BMW App
The My BMW
App acts as a universal digital interface, providing details on the
vehicle’s status and available range at any time. Amongst its many
functions, it enables customers to book service appointments, send
destination addresses to the car’s navigation system and initiate BMW
ConnectedDrive Upgrades.

Smartphone integration with wireless WiFi connection

of armoured vehicles. Now, for the first time in its history, the
company has granted TV cameras access inside its secretive Protection
Vehicle division. Secrets
of the Supercars will take viewers behind the scenes for an
exclusive look at manufacturing and testing of the BMW X5 Protection
VR6 – an SAV capable of withstanding attack from automatic weapons
like the AK-47.

The next episode of Secrets of the Supercars, to be broadcast
this Sunday evening in the UK & Ireland, will lift the lid on the
BMW X5 Protection VR6. It will take viewers behind the scenes at the
BMW Protection facility in Munich, Germany, to see how the company
designs and builds a car that can withstand sustained enemy attack
whilst keeping occupants safe. The vehicle will also be put to the
test on track and at the shooting range, providing viewers with unique
insight into how it achieves its industry-leading safety certification.

Barely distinguishable from the series-production model both in
terms of its appearance and driving dynamics, the BMW X5 Protection
VR6 shields occupants with approximately 30 mm thick multi-layer
safety glass that features an internal polycarbonate splinter
protection layer. Combined with the armoured passenger compartment,
post-blast-protection, leak-resistant fuel tank and run-flat tyres,
the BMW X5 Protection VR6 can safeguard against attacks from
short-range and long-range weapons.

The Secrets of the Supercars series provides an inside look at
some of the most exclusive car companies on earth, putting vehicles
through their paces on the track, discovering game-changing supercars
of the past and revealing what happens when engineers push supercar
design to the extremes.

Secrets of the Supercars BMW X5 Protection VR6 episode will
broadcast on Dave on Sunday 2 May at 19:00 BST. International

Awards 2021 • 3 Series, 4 Series & 5 Series all successful, alongside BMW X5 and X6 • Nine ‘Best Buy’ category wins for BMW and a further two for MINI</pp:summary>

BMW has kicked off 2021 by scooping an impressive number of wins at
the 43rd annual What Car? Awards.

The BMW 3 Series, 4 Series and 5 Series were all recognised, as
were the BMW X5 and X6, with a further nine awards for a range of
models across the Best Buy categories, where MINI also snapped up two awards.

The BMW 330e secured the highly coveted Executive Car of the
Year award, to add to the seven industry awards already collected in 2020.

Steve Huntingford, Editor, What Car?, said “The latest 3 Series
has been our favourite executive car ever since it went on sale, but
the specific magic of the plug-in hybrid 330e is in being all things
to all drivers. It can run for up to 36 miles on electric power alone,
which is enough for most commutes, but it's also great at shrugging
off long motorway trips and displays an agility and sense of fun in
corners that no rival can match”.

The recently launched BMW 4 Series won Coupé of the Year, with
Huntingford praising the vehicle’s “perfectly balanced take on the
dual nature that makes for a world-class sports coupé”, while the BMW
530e was named the title’s Luxury Car of the Year.

The BMW X5 xDrive 45e and X6 xDrive 30d were also successful,
winning Luxury SUV of the Year and Coupé SUV of the Year respectively.
Impressed with the X5 for its hybrid credentials, Huntingford
commented, “When choosing a plug-in hybrid, it goes without saying
that you want economy and cost-effectiveness, but if you don’t want to
compromise on the finer things in life, the X5 xDrive45e is right up
your street”.

Huntingford also praised the BMW X6 for being class leading,
writing “without the X6, it’s doubtful the coupé SUV class would even
exist, and the latest version moves the game on again”.

The honours continued with BMW securing nine Best Buy wins
across its range of models, including Best Family Car Interior for the
BMW 1 Series, Best Plug-in Hybrid to Drive for the BMW 330e and Best
Estate Car to Drive for the BMW 3 Series Touring. The BMW 5 Series
Touring was recognised as Best Estate Car Interior, BMW 4 Series took
home Best Performance Car for Value and the BMW iX3, the brand’s first
fully electric SUV, took home Best Large Electric SUV.

Numerous BMW SAV models were also recognised, with the BMW X7
winning Best Luxury SUV for big families, Best Plug-in Hybrid interior
for the BMW X5 and the X3 winning Best Sports SUV for families.

MINI also enjoyed another successful year, securing two Best Buy
wins: Best Small Car Interior and Best Convertible for Value for the
MINI 3-Door Hatch and MINI Convertible.

Remarking on the win, Huntingford said “The latest MINI
Convertible is one of the most affordable drop-tops you can buy but,
crucially, it still feels every inch the premium product. Its interior
is a particular highlight, because it’s packed with fashionable
touches and there are quality materials everywhere you look. What's
more, with the roof down but the windows up, you’re well isolated from
wind bluster”.

The MINI Convertible remains the number one selling Convertible
in the UK, with 3,416 sold in 2020.

strong design with supreme on- and off-road ability, the new X5 has an
even greater blend of premium luxury performance and comfort. It’s a
winning formula with previous generations selling in excess of 2.2
million examples since the first X5 launched in 1999.

Available to order now in Ireland, the all-new X5 demonstrates the
latest BMW advances in technology, design and safety, with the highest
level of autonomous capability yet seen on a BMW X model. A choice of
TwinPower and M Performance petrol and diesel engines are matched to a
new eight-speed Steptronic gearbox and the latest version of xDrive
for maximum comfort, capability and performance.

Design.

The latest X5 retains the hallmark proportions of an SAV, but the
pared-back design language – clean surfacing and precise lines
providing elegant poise and muscular authority – is new. With a
wheelbase 42mm longer than its predecessor, an increase in vehicle
length of 36mm, an extra 66mm of width and a 19mm increase in height,
the new BMW X5 has both an imposing appearance and generous levels of
space for passengers and their luggage.

Distinctive design features mark out the xLine and M Sport model
variants of the new X5. The xLine model adds kidney grille bars in
aluminium matt, roof rails and side window surrounds in satin
Aluminium, plus other accents in Pearl-effect Chrome. M Sport
specification, meanwhile, sees the wheel arch trim, bumper trim, rear
underguard and side skirts painted in body colour, plus extra-large
air intakes at the front end, aluminium matt kidney grille bars. The
roof rails, side window surrounds and other trim elements in
high-gloss black flag up the dynamic potential of the SAV.

The new BMW X5 comes as standard with 19-inch light-alloy wheels on
the xLine model, 20-inch M star-spoke light-alloy wheels on the M
Sport model and 22-inch V-spoke alloy wheels on the M Performance
model. Further variants in 20 to 22-inch formats are available as
options.

Powertrain and driving experience.
There will be one petrol and two diesel units available from
the latest generation of engines. The BMW X5 M50d is powered by a
six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with a quartet of turbochargers,
with a six-cylinder inline unit in the BMW X5 xDrive40i and BMW X5
xDrive30d. All engines channel their power through an eight-speed
Steptronic transmission, while BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive
is on hand to ensure that power is translated into secure progress –
on or off road.

The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology package for the petrol
engines comprises turbochargers, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC
fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing.
On the diesel side, the raft of technological measures at work
includes turbochargers and common-rail direct injection with piezo
injectors. The result is instantaneous pulling power and sporty
performance credentials with exemplary fuel consumption and emissions.
All model variants comply with the requirements of the EU6d-TEMP
emissions standard. The system of emission control for the petrol
engines includes a gasoline particulate filter, while the diesel
models boast BMW BluePerformance technology comprising a particulate
filter, an oxidation catalyst, a NOx adsorption catalyst and an SCR
catalyst with AdBlue injection.

The power unit fitted in the new BMW X5 xDrive40i enjoys free-revving
ability and eager response. The 3.0-litre unit employs a twin-scroll
turbocharger and direct petrol injection technology with a maximum
pressure of 350 bar. The straight-six generates its maximum output of
340hp, while the peak torque of 450Nm is available. The new BMW X5
xDrive40i completes the zero to 100km sprint in just 5.5 seconds. Fuel
consumption averages 33.2mpg and CO2 emissions are 193g/km.

The performance of the new BMW X5 M50d is provided by the potent
engine at work under its bonnet. From its 3.0-litre displacement the
BMW M Performance model’s six-cylinder in-line unit delivers a peak
output of 400hp and generates maximum torque of 760Nm.

These figures are possible thanks to a multi-stage turbocharging
system composed of two high-pressure and two low-pressure
turbochargers delivering over 450Nm of torque. In normal driving
situations, both low-pressure turbochargers and one of the two
high-pressure units are permanently active. The second high-pressure
turbocharger only joins in when the engine speed tops 2,500rpm. Under
hard acceleration from idle, flaps are adjusted so the pair of
low-pressure turbochargers can be swiftly bypassed, thereby generating
maximum charge pressure with even less delay. To boost the
turbocharging system’s efficiency, exhaust gas recirculation is
employed for both the high-pressure and low-pressure stages and the
common-rail direct injection system capable of generating pressures in
excess of 2,500 bar. The new BMW X5 M50d darts to 100km/h from rest in
5.2 seconds yet it succeeds in posting a combined fuel consumption of
41.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 179g/km.

The new BMW X5 xDrive30d is also powered by a straight-six
diesel engine, this time with displacement of 3.0 litres and featuring
a single turbocharger with variable inlet geometry. The common-rail
direct injection system propels fuel into the combustion chambers at
up to 2,500 bar. Maximum output of 265hp, while offering 620Nm of
torque. Capable of reaching the 100km/h mark from rest in 6.5
seconds, the new X5 xDrive30d returns combined fuel consumption of
just 470mpg, equating to CO2 emissions of 158g/km*.

*Electronically limited

** All figures are provisional

All of the engines available for the new BMW X5 come with a new,
improved version of the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, whose
wider ratio spread and new control electronics help to increase the
powertrain’s overall efficiency. New torsion dampers reduce rotational
irregularities and converter slip for superior shift comfort, while
optimised hydraulic control enables even sportier gear shifts.

Efficiency-enhanced xDrive all-wheel drive.
The task of maximising traction, agility and
directional stability in the new BMW X5 falls to the latest generation
of the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system, which is now
able to split drive torque between the front and rear wheels with even
greater precision and speed on demand.

The new xDrive system also offers a rear-biased
set-up for those occasions when the driver adopts a particularly
dynamic approach. The electronically controlled rear differential lock
(available on M Performance models and/or in conjunction with the
Off-Road package) gives the handling an even sportier edge. Governed
by the Driving Stability Control (DSC) system, the locking function
for the rear differential improves traction and power transmission
when driving over loose ground or on road surfaces offering differing
levels of grip for the left-rear and right-rear wheels. The locking
effect is produced by means of an electric motor and allows as much as
1,500Nm of drive torque to be redirected from the faster-turning wheel
to the slower-turning wheel.

New chassis systems.

The design principle underpinning the chassis – based on a
double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle – is complemented
by the standard Dynamic Damper Control system, whose electronically
controlled dampers sharpen the car’s handling dynamics at the same
time as increasing ride and suspension comfort. The driver can select
from two performance maps for a more comfort-oriented or sportier
driving style, using the Driving Experience Control switch. Standard
specification for the new BMW X5 M50d includes model-specific
kinematics and elastokinematics for the wheel suspension, individual
spring and damper tuning, plus 22-inch M light-alloy wheels. This
bespoke configuration increases the BMW M Performance model’s agility
and steering precision, enables faster cornering and optimises its
transitional responses.

An array of chassis systems available in a BMW X model make it
possible to boost the off-road performance, sportiness or comfort of
the new BMW X5. Adaptive M suspension Professional with active roll
stabilisation and Integral Active Steering endows the car with
exceptionally agile and dynamic driving qualities. The roll
stabilisation system employs electric swivel motors to enable
remarkably swift and precise compensation of body roll under dynamic
cornering. Integral Active Steering (also available as an individual
option) is also operated electromechanically. By turning the rear
wheels in either the same direction as the front wheels or the
opposite direction – depending on the vehicle speed – it optimises
cornering agility, ensures effortless lane changes and helps the
vehicle to dart through city traffic.

The two-axle air suspension system is standard on both the BMW X5
xDrive30d and X5 xDrive40i models. It is controlled individually for
each wheel using an electrically driven compressor with pressure
reservoir, enabling it to balance out an unevenly loaded vehicle.
Working in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, the
vehicle load registered by its sensors can be factored into braking
calculations. When the SPORT driving mode is engaged or the vehicle’s
speed exceeds 18km/h the ride height is automatically lowered by 20mm.
The driver can also adjust the body’s ground clearance for off-road
driving, for example by pushing a button in the cockpit. It can be
raised in two stages to a maximum of 40mm above the standard setting.
Another button in the luggage compartment activates a loading mode
that lowers the vehicle by 40mm. The desired vehicle ride height can
even be set with the engine switched off and the optional BMW Display
Key can also be used to access this function.

Customers can also specify an Off-Road package. Offered for the first
time in a BMW X model, the package includes underguard elements at the
front and rear of the vehicle, along with the two-axle air suspension
and electronically controlled rear differential lock. The driver can
activate the ideal settings for off-roading including the vehicle’s
ride height, the xDrive system, the accelerator response, the
transmission control, and the DSC system’s corrective inputs in
preparation for driving on a range of surfaces, such as sand, rock,
gravel or snow. Available for all model
variants apart from the BMW X5 M50d.

Interior and equipment.
The fully-digital instrument cluster and the Control Display
share the same graphics and design, with the centre console hosting
the Controller, the newly designed transmission selector lever and all
other driving-related controls. A similarly new-look control panel for
the heating and air conditioning is also on hand and the light
functions in the new X5 are likewise operated using buttons.

The carefully selected materials in the interior include the
new Vernasca leather variant for the standard leather upholstery. Like
the optional BMW Individual extended Merino leather trim, it is
available in four colours. The new BMW X5 is fitted as standard with
electrically adjustable and heated sports seats. Customers can also
specify optional multifunctional front comfort seats, including
massage function and seat ventilation within the Comfort/Comfort Plus packages.

M Sport models also includes an M sports steering wheel, BMW
Individual headliner in Anthracite, M-specific pedals, driver’s
footrest and piping on the seats, plus exclusive interior trim strips
in Aluminium Tetragon.

Other new features on board the BMW X5 include the four-zone air
conditioning system and the panoramic glass roof, whose clear surface
is 30 per cent larger than on the outgoing car. The Panorama glass
roof Sky Lounge, meanwhile, provides LED light spread evenly across
the glass surface to illuminate more than 15,000 graphic patterns and
generate a display reminiscent of a starlit sky. The colour scheme of
this atmospheric light show can be adapted as desired. The optional
ambient lighting includes the Welcome Light Carpet – which illuminates
the entry area to the car when the doors are unlocked or opened – and
Dynamic Interior Light, which emits pulsating light signals in
pre-defined situations: they are activated in the lining of a door or
doors opened while the engine is running and in the instrument panel
when a phone call is incoming.

The Ambient Air package provides air ionisation and infuses the
interior with eight individually selectable scents, and a luxurious
audio experience is offered by the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond
Surround Sound System with 20 speakers and 1,500-watt output (expected
to be available from 12/2018).

The optional Rear-seat entertainment Professional system comprises a
pair of 10.2-inch full-HD touchscreen displays, a Blu-ray-compatible
DVD player, two USB ports, an HDMI socket and two headphone jacks. The
rear-seat passengers can use both their own media sources and those
available in the front compartment. A navigation map and BMW
ConnectedDrive services can also be accessed in the rear seats.

The new BMW X5 can now also be specified with thermo-cupholders
foremost in the centre console which can be kept cool or warm, while
the optional CraftedClarity glass application for selected controls
bring an all-new flourish to the interior of the X5. This exclusive
design feature has been developed for the transmission selector lever,
the Controller, the start/stop button and the volume control button
for the audio system.

As well as increased levels of comfort and exclusivity, the new BMW
X5 now also offers enhanced functionality. Folding down the 40 : 20 :
40 split rear seat backrest increases boot capacity from 645 litres to
a maximum of 1,860 litres. The new BMW X5 also has a two-section
tailgate for ease of loading. If the optional Comfort Access is
specified, both sections can be opened and closed automatically and
hands-free. In addition the boot cover now lowers electrically into
the load compartment floor

If the optional third row of seats is specified customers may also
order the rear seats with electric fore-and-aft adjustment. A control
panel in the boot can be used to slide the second-row seats forwards
or backwards and fold down the backrests of the second and third rows.

Driver assistance systems: Another significant step towards
automated driving.
Available as an option, the new
Driving Assistant Professional package comprises Active Cruise Control
(ACC) with Stop & Go function, which is capable of braking the
vehicle to a standstill and sending it on its way again automatically.
For greater convenience in stop-start traffic, the period between
stopping and automatically moving off has been extended up to 30
seconds. Speed restrictions identified by the Speed Limit Info system
with No Passing Info display can be incorporated into the automatic
cruise control system with variations of up to 15km/h. This pack also
contains the Steering and lane control assistant including Traffic Jam
Assist as well as the Lane Keeping Assistant with active side
collision protection. The Lane Change Assistant can be used on
motorways and dual carriageways when the Steering and lane control
assistant is active. Holding the direction indicator in the required
direction is all it takes
to initiate a lane change. Another
component of the system is the evasion aid, which can help avoid
collisions with vehicles or pedestrians suddenly appearing in the
driver’s path. As soon as an evasive manoeuvre corresponding to such a
scenario is detected, the system assists the driver with steering
inputs to direct the vehicle into a clear adjacent lane. Other
constituents of this pack includes:

Lane change warning

Crossing Traffic Warning rear

Rear-end collision warning

Speed Limit Information incl. no passing info and preview

The Parking Assistant is another standard feature within in the
new BMW X5. It enables automatic selection and use of parallel
parking spaces. These parking spaces are detected by ultrasonic
sensors as the vehicle passes them. The Parking Assistant function
is activated at the touch of a button on the centre console. The
system then takes care of the acceleration, braking, steering and
gear changes necessary to manoeuvre into the space. Parking
assist also includes Reversing Assistant - a further illustration
of BMW’s ongoing progress towards automated driving

This function offers a level of assistance – for leaving a
parking space or manoeuvring in a confined area – currently
unmatched by other vehicles. The Reversing Assistant controls the
steering to manoeuvre the vehicle along a path recently negotiated
forwards. This system makes reversing for a distance of up to 50
metres a simple task in the new BMW X5. The driver just has to
operate the accelerator and brakes and monitor the surrounding
area. The steering movements made during the vehicle’s last
forward manoeuvre are stored by the system and retained, even for
longer periods. This means the Reversing Assistant can be used to
manoeuvre the new BMW X5 backwards out of a parking position that
it drove into forwards the preceding day.

The driver enjoys ideal all-round visibility, thanks to both the
rear-view camera and the Top View, Panorama View and 3D View
functions of Parking Assistant Plus, which create a 360-degree
image of the vehicle and its surroundings in the Control Display.
In addition, drivers can use the Remote 3D View feature to access
a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and surroundings
on a smartphone.

BMW Connected and ConnectedDrive:
Cutting-edge, digital and seamlessly integrated into modern life.

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional in the new BMW X5 combines a new
display and control concept and the ultimate in connectivity to create
a superb all-round package. The latest-generation display and control
concept comprises a high-resolution instrument cluster behind the
steering wheel with a 12.3-inch screen and a Control Display also
measuring 12.3 inches across.

The system runs the latest BMW Operating System 7.0, and has a
cutting-edge, fully digital design. The new graphics display in the
instrument cluster now leaves enough room for a part-view of the
navigation map. The main menu in the Control Display is now spread
over up to ten pages, each showing two to four tiles with live
content. The intuitive multimodal interface has also been further
improved and allows the choice of touch control using the Control
Display, the familiar iDrive Touch Controller, controls on the
steering wheel, voice control or BMW gesture control. Also included in
BMW Live Cockpit Professional are an adaptive navigation system, a
hard-drive-based multimedia system with 20GB of memory and two USB
ports, plus Bluetooth and WiFi interfaces.

For the first time, a selection of digital services will also be
combined together available under the guise of the Connected Package
Professional. This package offered as standard on all BMW X5 models
increases the levels of connectivity and makes it easier for customers
to take best advantage of digital services available on their car. The
Connected Package Professional includes Remote Services, Concierge
Services and Real Time Traffic Information and so much more. The
package provides a subscription for three years on all included
services – with the exception of Apple CarPlay which is included for
the first 12 months. Customers can also continue to download the
various digital services individually and retrospectively via the
ConnectedDrive Store.

BMW Connected: digital services for individual mobility.
BMW Connected is the digital and personal mobility assistant
for BMW drivers and not just in the car; BMW Connected is an
all-embracing concept designed to seamlessly connect the driver and
their smartphone with their vehicle.

At the heart of it all is the Open Mobility Cloud, which allows
the personal mobility assistant to interface the car with the
customer’s digital devices. These could include an iPhone and Apple
Watch, smartphones and smartwatches running the Android operating
system, Alexa-compatible smart devices and Google Home.

Always up to date thanks to Remote Software Upgrade.

The Remote Software Upgrade feature keeps the vehicle up to date with
the latest software. All updates can be loaded over the air and
upgrades can be loaded onto a smartphone via the BMW Connected app
when connected to a domestic WiFi network or imported directly via the
BMW’s built-in SIM card, which happens automatically for important
vehicle upgrades. The Remote Software Upgrade facility therefore
maximises flexibility while keeping BMW vehicles in tune with the
latest technological developments.

Mobile office: Microsoft Office 365 with Skype for Business.
The integration of Microsoft Office 365 turns the new
BMW X5 into a mobile office. Users of a Business Essential or Business
Premium account with Exchange function are thereby able to safely
access their email account from their car and easily manage
appointments and contacts, so there is absolutely no need for them to
use their smartphone while driving. Drivers can have emails read out
to them and are able to use voice commands to dictate and send new
messages while on the move. In addition, calendar appointments can be
confirmed, cancelled or transferred straight to the navigation system,
as can contact addresses. Microsoft Office 365 users have also been
able to use Skype for Business from Microsoft in their car since
autumn 2017.
