The update will provide the BMW X5 with everything it needs to maintain worldwide market leadership in its segment and enable the BMW X6 to secure its position as number one ahead of competitors from other premium German manufacturers. The two models will be built at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the USA, the competence centre for BMW X models, and their global launch gets underway in April 2023.

The new BMW X5: slim headlights, illuminated BMW kidney grille.

The inclusion of the xLine design elements as standard gives the BMW X5 significantly greater presence and visual robustness. Its front end is shaped by the fresh interpretation of the hallmark BMW headlights and kidney grille. The new headlight units now have a 35-millimetre slimmer outline. Their arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements point outwards and also serve as turn signal indicators. Matrix LED headlights with adaptive control and BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling high beam, plus M Shadowline lights, are included on the options list.

The BMW kidney Iconic Glow is now offered as an option for the six-cylinder variants of the new BMW X5, and its cascade lighting creates an extremely eye-catching and brand-typical look. The vertical air curtains and the lower air intake, complete with decorative trim detail in Pearl-effect Chrome and triangular apertures in its outer areas, also contribute to the cutting-edge aura.

The precisely updated design of the BMW X5 also spans newly designed air breathers in the front side panels and the standard inclusion of Exterior Line Satin Aluminium trim and roof rails in Satin Aluminium. The sculptural fibre-optic light guide elements for the rear lights and brake lights now have particularly striking contouring. The L shape familiar from other BMW models is reflected horizontally, creating a consistently illuminated X motif within the rear lights.

The new BMW X6: M Sport package now standard.

The new BMW X6 also has slim headlight units with arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements. As before, the BMW kidney Iconic Glow is offered as an option for the six-cylinder models. The dynamic character of the new BMW X6 is highlighted even more intently with the now standard M Sport package.

Range-topping models with distinctive design features; M Sport package Pro makes its debut.

The M Sport package is available as an option for the new BMW X5 to convey the feeling of exclusive dynamism, as it does as standard in the design of the new BMW X6. They include double bars and an M logo for the BMW kidney grille, M exterior mirror caps in Black high-gloss, exhaust system tailpipe trim in the hallmark M quad-pipe style.

All model variants are now available with the M Sport package Pro. New additions for all models are Blue Ridge Mountain metallic, Brooklyn Grey metallic, Skyscraper Grey metallic, Frozen Pure Grey metallic and around 40 BMW Individual special paint finishes.

Modern cockpit design with all-digital BMW Curved Display.

Digital technology is the guiding force behind the advances brought to the interior of the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. The integration of BMW Operating System 8 and the latest generation of the iDrive control/operation system also heralds the arrival of the BMW Curved Display in the Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupé.

It is made up of a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches – both located behind a single glass surface. The touch control functionality of the control display has brought about a significant reduction in the number of buttons and switches in favour of digital control for numerous functions. The innovative cockpit and associated updates to the instrument panel bring a particularly progressive feel to the modern premium ambience.

Standard specification for both models now includes an instrument panel with surfacing in leather-like Sensafin and an elegantly curving trim element in fine wood. Another new feature is the ambient light bar with highly effective LED backlighting integrated below the trim element in the front passenger area. The relevant model lettering – “X5” or “X6” – is added to the light bar’s graphic; in the two flagship models it displays the M logo. The control panel on the centre console includes additional touch-sensitive surfaces and a newly designed gear selector lever.

Comfort seats for the driver and front passenger can be specified as an alternative to the standard sport seats with Sensafin surfaces. Also available as an option are BMW Individual Merino extended leather upholstery, BMW Individual full Merino leather upholstery, active seat ventilation and a massage function.

Among the other highlights of the options list are the new Comfort Package with panel heating and a “thermo” function for the cup holders, the Sky Lounge panoramic glass sunroof illuminated by LED units, glass applications for selected controls, the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System and the newly designed Travel & Comfort System.

New engines, new eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and systematic electrification.

The new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 can both be ordered with the choice of an eight-cylinder petrol engine, and a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine – each from the latest generation of power units. All of the engines now link up with the likewise new eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, complete with gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. They send their power to the road – or indeed unpaved surfaces, as the need arises – via the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

New plug-in hybrid BMW X5 xDrive50e offers more power, efficiency and electric range.

The drive system for the plug-in hybrid variant of the SAV has also been completely reworked, and the updated model carries the designation BMW X5 xDrive50e. A latest-generation six-cylinder in-line petrol engine and a similarly new electric motor team up to develop system output of 360 kW/489 hp (including temporary boost effect) – an increase of 70 kW/96 hp over the outgoing model – and combined torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft), which is a rise of 100 Nm (74 lb-ft). The petrol engine’s nominal output of 230 kW/313 hp represents an increase of 20 kW/27 hp on the unit it replaces. The compact electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission produces a nominal output of 145 kW/197 hp (+62 kW/84 hp). In addition, an innovative pre-gearing stage – used to increase the effective torque produced by the electric motor to a maximum 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) at the transmission input for the motor – helps to provide even sharper power delivery. The BMW X5 xDrive50e accelerates from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds.

The amount of usable energy that can be stored by the high-voltage battery integrated into the underbody area has been increased by almost 25 per cent over the preceding generation, to 25.7 kWh. A new Combined Charging Unit doubles the maximum AC charging rate to 7.4 kW. The electric range of the new BMW X5 xDrive50e is 94 – 110 kilometres (58 – 68 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

New V8 petrol engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology.

Credit for the elite sporting prowess of the two range-topping models goes to a new 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine, derived from the power units in high-performance models from BMW M GmbH. M TwinPower Turbo technology and a cross-bank exhaust manifold imbue the 390 kW/530 hp engine, which generates peak torque of 750 Nm (553 lb-ft), with impressively accomplished performance characteristics.

Sophisticated chassis technology underpins sporting ability and long-distance comfort.

Fitting adaptive suspension as standard, modifying the anti-roll bars in response to changes in weight distribution and strengthening them accordingly gives the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 their signature blend of sporting versatility and excellent long-distance comfort. Adaptive M suspension, which comes as standard on both the range-topping models as well as the other variants of the new BMW X6, provides a particularly firm connection to the body. Adaptive two-axle air suspension and the xOffroad package are offered as options. The range-topping models are equipped as standard with Integral Active Steering. This is available as an option for all other models or as part of the adaptive M suspension Professional, which also includes an M Sport differential and an active roll stabilisation system.

The integrated braking system is another element of the advanced chassis technology at work here. And standard specification also includes 19-inch light-alloy wheels for the new BMW X5, 20-inch items for the new BMW X6 and 21-inch wheels for the range-topping variant of each model. Light-alloy wheels up to 22 inches in size can be specified as an option.

Additional systems for automated driving and parking.

Comfort and safety in the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 can be taken to another new level with a significantly expanded selection of automated driving and parking systems. Updates include enhanced capabilities for the standard front-collision warning system, which can now also reduce the risk of a collision with cyclists, pedestrians or oncoming traffic when turning off a road. Among the options now available are automatic Speed Limit Assist, exit warning, Active Navigation, route speed control, traffic light recognition (depending on the market), Emergency Stop Assistant, Lane Change Assistant and Merging Assistant.

As well as the Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing Assistant, the standard Parking Assistant now also comprises the drive-off monitoring and Trailer Assistant functions. And the new, optional Parking Assistant Professional enables automated parking into and out of spaces and complete manoeuvres over a distance of up to 200 metres to be controlled from outside the car using the My BMW App on an Apple iPhone.

This can be interpreted by the brain as staring into a hole or even a void, making Vantablack a rather unsuitable vehicle paint finish, as it blots out virtually all the design details and highlights. For this reason, the BMW X6 was coated in the VBx2 variant initially developed for use in architectural and scientific applications. This coating can be sprayed on and has a one-per-cent total hemispherical reflectance (THR), meaning it is still considered “super black” while enabling a small amount of reflection from every angle. Thus, materials painted with it seem to lose their three-dimensional appearance – as demonstrated impressively on the BMW X6.

Vantablack: the “blackest black”, developed for aerospace applications.
The name Vantablack has already become synonymous with an entire range of extremely black coatings and paints such as VBx2. It contains an acronym of the technology enabling this superior black in its first two syllables, which stand for Vertically Aligned Nano Tube Array, a matrix made out of carbon. Each of these carbon nanotubes has a length of 14 to 50 micrometres, with a diameter of 20 nanometres, making it around 5,000 times thinner than a human hair. As a result, around a billion of these vertically aligned carbon nanotubes fit into one square centimetre. Any light striking this surface is almost completely absorbed rather than reflected, and effectively converted into heat.

This technology was initially developed for coating space-borne components. As Vantablack can be applied at temperatures from as low as 430 degrees Celsius, it is suitable for delicate materials such as aluminium, and optical components coated in Vantablack enable observation of faint stars and distant galaxies that stray light from the sun makes difficult to detect. The first generation of Vantablack introduced by Surrey NanoSystems in 2014 absorbed up to 99.965 per cent of light, almost completely eliminating reflectance and stray light.

An interview with Ben Jensen, Vantablack inventor and founder of Surrey NanoSystems.

What was your first thought when you were approached with the idea of providing the BMW X6 with a Vantablack paint finish?
Ben Jensen: To be honest, we received inquiries from most of the big-name automotive manufacturers, almost from the day we launched the original material in 2014, but we’d always said no. This was also due to the fact that we only had a suitable material once we came up with VBx2. When we were approached by BMW, we were still quite hesitant to begin with. But the new X6 looked so incredibly different that it just felt like a really good fit.

Have your expectations been met?
Jensen: I think it went beyond all our expectations. The BMW X6 in Vantablack looks absolutely fantastic. We also realised that it wouldn’t have worked if we’d put on the original material, as the viewer would have lost all sense of three-dimensionality. VBx2 with its one-per-cent reflectance provides just enough of a hint of shape. Add to that the contrast between the matt black surface and details such as the Iconic Glow kidney grille, the headlights and the windows – everything is just set off beautifully.

Hypothetically speaking, could you imagine Vantablack VBx2 becoming a regular paint finish option for people buying a car in the future?
Jensen: I think it worked really well on the BMW X6, because of the size of the car, its distinctive shape, and how imposing it is. But putting a paint like that on a conventional car lacking a distinctive design would probably detract from it in some way. In addition, developing a Vantablack VBx2 car paint durable enough for daily use is a huge technological challenge.

However, Vantablack already has an important role in advanced automotive technology …
Jensen: Indeed, the material is now being used more and more in various types of, laser-based sensor equipment for driver assistance systems and technologies for autonomous driving, for instance. That is because incident sunlight can cause a degradation of performance in these systems as well. A Vantablack coating eliminates these issues and results in increased safety.

An interview with Hussein Al Attar, Creative Director Automotive Design at Designworks and the designer responsible for the new BMW X6.

What does it mean to you that “your” BMW X6 is the first car in the world to have been chosen for such a project by the makers of Vantablack?
Al Attar: I first heard about Vantablack a few years ago – and I’ve been absolutely fascinated with the technology ever since. So, for me personally, this is a big deal. When my colleagues told me about a possible collaboration some months ago, I was very excited.

What makes the BMW X6 the perfect car for this project?
Al Attar: Internally, we often refer to the BMW X6 as “The Beast.” I think that says it all. The Vantablack VBx2 finish emphasises this aspect and makes the BMW X6 look particularly menacing. Moreover, the BMW X6 has always been the most provocative and in-your-face model in our portfolio. So why not emphasise this even further, with a finish that simply captivates the viewer’s attention? After all, that’s what the BMW X6 has always been about.

But a Vantablack finish makes objects appear two-dimensional. Doesn’t that render it supremely unsuitable as a car paint, especially for a car with a design as expressive as the BMW X6?
Al Attar: Yes, there is a certain inherent contradiction. But that’s exactly what makes this interesting and explains why the BMW X6 is the perfect car for this project. In addition, Vantablack VBx2 opens up new possibilities for us as designers. We often prefer to talk about silhouettes and proportions rather than surfaces and lines. The Vantablack VBx2 coating foregrounds these fundamental aspects of automotive design, without any distraction from light and reflections. I am very proud of how beautiful the new BMW X6 has turned out, including its bold and expressive surfaces. But the most remarkable evolution over the predecessor concerns its proportions. And that is precisely what Vantablack underscores, albeit in a rather unexpected fashion.

Hypothetically speaking, could you imagine Vantablack VBx2 becoming a regular paint finish option for people buying a car in the future?
Al Attar: Absolutely. BMW X6 drivers are among our most extrovert and free-spirited customers. If anyone were to opt for a Vantablack paint option, it would definitely be a BMW X6 driver.

Third-generation BMW X6 to start in November 2019.
The latest incarnation of the car that established the innovative and distinctive Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) segment will have its world premiere at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, from 12 to 22 September. The showroom launch will begin shortly afterwards, in November 2019. The third-generation BMW X6 employs a precise and exclusive design language to underscore its confident, dominant appearance. In addition, its advanced powertrain and chassis technology combines with numerous innovations to provide a uniquely sporty yet luxurious driving experience. Like its predecessors, the new BMW X6 is produced at the BMW plant in Spartanburg in the United States.

Munich. A confident presence in any situation and boundless driving pleasure on any terrain are among the shared strengths of the BMW X5 (fuel consumption combined: 9.6 – 3.3 l/100 km [29.4 – 85.6 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 224 – 77 g/km) and BMW X6 (fuel consumption combined: 9.7 – 6.9 l/100 km [29.1 – 40.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 225 – 183 g/km). And the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) are now set to welcome attractive special-edition models which underscore their exclusive and sporting character extremely effectively. The BMW X5 Special Edition and BMW X6 M Sport Edition both capture the imagination with their high-class equipment features. The two special-edition models will be available from December 2017.

The BMW X5 Special Edition brings together the M Sport package with Dakota leather trim, including heated seats for the driver and front passenger. The Alcantara/leather upholstery combination in Anthracite/Black and with M badging on the seat leather is available as an alternative at no extra cost. BMW Individual extended leather upholstery Merino in five colour variants can be specified as an option. Added to which, the BMW X5 Special Edition also comes with sun protection glass and the Multifunctional Instrument Display (not available for the BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance). All variants of the BMW X5 are available in Special Edition guise, with the exception of the BMW X5 M50d and limited to the German market. 

The Long Beach Blue metallic exterior paint shade and Carbon Fibre interior trim strips are the exclusive elements of the M Sport Edition package for the BMW X6. The Carbon Black and Mineral White metallic paint finishes are available as alternatives. The M Sport Edition also adds the equipment features of the M Sport package and 20-inch M light-alloy wheels (also exclusive) in double-spoke design with mixed-size runflat tyres. 21-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design with mixed-size runflat tyres can be ordered as an option for the special-edition model. All engine variants of the Sports Activity Coupe are available in M Sport Edition specification, with the exception of the BMW X6 M50d.

Bucharest/ Munich. The toughest days of the Romanian winter this year: over 50 cm of snow in only 24 hours and temperatures of -20 °C and below. These were also some of the most spectacular moments for filming. The Stanislav Cociorva and Ecaterina Cernei creative couple, known as “neat.graphics” or simply Stanly & Katya, tackled these challenges, exploring the unique frozen landscapes of the Romanian mountains. The hero of the project was the BMW X6 M50d xDrive. It faced down the extreme winter conditions and snow covered mountain roads taking the team to the perfect shooting locations. The result is a stunning short movie about the wild, snow covered mountains of Romania.

“As we already had acquired experience filming Romania in the summer, we were tempted to make another movie in winter. Using the knowledge we had gained during our previous trips we chose locations which offered a rich diversity of natural landscapes and cultural landmarks”, explained Katya.

The project was filmed in 10 locations, and extended over 2 weeks covering a distance of 2500 km. It included high-altitude mountain roads winding their way up to 2000 m. Among them, the famous and wild “Transfăgărăşan” which Jeremy Clarkson called “the most beautiful road in the world”, now almost completely covered in snow. The remote mountain castles also feature spectacularly in the film. The (in)famous Dracula Castle, Bran, probably received the most elaborate shoot.

“The greatest challenge we faced during our trip was the weather. Specifically mountain hairpin turns covered with snow and ice. The BMW X 6 M50d is not only an epic presence in the film, but also got us to remote locations uncompromisingly and helped realise our project on time. Regardless of the extreme winter conditions and rough state of the mountain roads, we always managed to reach our destination”, continues Stanly.

About the BMW X6 M50d.
Since its launch, the BMW X6 M50d has been the most powerful three litre diesel in its segment. It delivers a maximum output of 280 kW/381 hp and a peak torque of 740 Newton metres. The key here is an innovative turbocharging system; two relatively small turbochargers and one large turbo dovetail precisely to deliver the amount of power required. The low moment of inertia of the small turbochargers is exploited to the full to deliver razor-sharp responses. The link-up with the large turbo is maximised to generate as much charge pressure as possible – just as the driving situation demands.

CO2 emissions come in at 174 grams per kilometre. The BMW X6 M50d thus displays a genuine commitment to delivering impressive efficiency at this extremely high level of performance.

BMW, one of the world’s most successful premium carmakers, also boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment it first entered 30 years ago. Around one in three BMW cars sold around the world is now equipped with the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system. BMW’s success in this segment has been driven not only by the ever-popular BMW X models but also by all-wheel-drive models based on the other model series, from the BMW 1 Series to the BMW 7 Series. Across these model series, a large choice of AWD models is offered in a wide range of engine versions. At the same time, BMW continues to refine this technology and take it in new directions. By offering BMW xDrive in combination with a hybrid drive and with a front-wheel-drive platform, the company has repeatedly demonstrated its proficiency in the all-wheel-drive field, proficiency that will secure BMW’s position at the forefront of this sector well into the future. Today, BMW offers more than 110 models – of either transmission type – with BMW xDrive in 12 different model series, as well as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car and the compact BMW 225xe with electrified all-wheel drive.

The focus from day one: traction and dynamics.
BMW’s first foray into the all-wheel-drive market came with the unveiling of the BMW 325i “Allrad” at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in 1985. From the outside, the newcomer didn’t immediately reveal its inner qualities, so its performance when the journalists took it out on the test track was even more of an eye-opener. This very first BMW all-wheel-drive system not only improved traction away from surfaced roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also made for more dynamic handling through corners. “The new BMW is the new champion when it comes to handling,” was the verdict of the testers from German car magazine Auto Zeitung not long after the first unveiling.

Today, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system takes typical BMW driving dynamics to new levels. The current generation of this system is controlled by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM) system, which ensures that xDrive always responds appropriately at the earliest possible moment, based on reliable sensing and monitoring of the current driving situation. The interventions may be performed either entirely by BMW xDrive, or by xDrive in combination with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Performance Control (DPC). The resulting fast and precise control of drive power distribution ensures typical BMW handling characteristics even under extremely dynamic cornering.

The all-wheel-drive system is biased towards the typical BMW rear-wheel-drive characteristics. That is to say, on the all-wheel-drive models a greater share of the drive power is sent to the rear wheels, even under normal driving conditions. This maintains the typical BMW precise steering response, with virtually no torque steer. For crisp turn-in and high tracking stability, the latest-generation BMW xDrive system starts increasing the amount of power sent to the rear wheels as soon as the vehicle enters a corner, further enhancing the driving pleasure for which BMW is a byword.

BMW all-wheel-drive technology: continuous evolution since 1985.
The full-time all-wheel-drive system featured on the BMW 325i “Allrad” of 1985 split the drive power in a ratio of 37 to 63 per cent between the front and rear wheels. In response to wheel speed differences, visco locks in the transfer case and rear differential were capable of providing a virtually rigid connection between the front and rear wheels, in order to improve traction and stability. This model’s name was soon changed to BMW 325iX, and from 1988 it was offered in a “touring” version as well (lower-case spelling up to and including the E46 series).

1991: BMW 525iX.
Three years on, BMW introduced an all-wheel-drive model in the BMW 5 Series too. For the first time, the power split was now electronically controlled. The newly developed system featured multi-plate clutches that allowed the default 36:64 front-to-rear power split to be varied seamlessly and automatically in line with driving conditions. Initially a hydraulically controlled multi-plate clutch was used at the rear axle, but this was later replaced by electronically controlled selective braking intervention. The system monitored the driving situation using wheel speed signals from the Anti-lock Braking System, supplemented by further information about brake status, engine speed and throttle valve position.

From the outset the all-wheel-drive system of the BMW 525iX was a class apart. The electronic control system delivered a very fast and precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered in both Sedan and touring versions.

1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.
In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of 38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X (Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle challenging conditions off the beaten track.

In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept, there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series.

2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.
Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only premium model in its class for years to come.

The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.

In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.

2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid drive.
With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile, in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the all-wheel-drive market.

2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.

BMW xDrive also available for other model series.
The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision, BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7 Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6 Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5 Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe models of the new BMW 4 Series.

Driving progress ever forward.
BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new front-wheel-drive format.

With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system. This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the front wheels.

Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.
BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.

The electronic control system delivered a very fast and precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered in both Sedan and touring versions.

1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.
In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of 38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X (Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle challenging conditions off the beaten track.

In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept, there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series.

2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.
Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only premium model in its class for years to come.

The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.

In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.

2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid drive.
With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile, in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the all-wheel-drive market.

2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.

BMW xDrive also available for other model series.
The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision, BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7 Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6 Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5 Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe models of the new BMW 4 Series.

Driving progress ever forward.
BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new front-wheel-drive format.

With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system. This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the front wheels.

Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.
BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.
In September 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This high-end BMW luxury model pioneers groundbreaking innovations on all fronts, and will be available with BMW xDrive from its market launch in October. The new luxury sedan will also be the first model to allow intelligent all-wheel-drive to be combined with Integral Active Steering – that is to say with passively steering rear wheels.

A wide selection of new BMW M Performance Parts available for the BMW X6 from the Accessories range allows owners to give the character of their large Sports Activity Coupe an even sharper sporting edge. As well as attractive design enhancements for the interior and exterior, the line-up also includes functional accessories which increase the engine’s power, for example, and lace its soundtrack with a stronger emotional appeal. In so doing, the new BMW M Performance Parts add further panache to the sporting driving pleasure available on board the BMW X6.

Sporting accents for the exterior.
The Aerodynamics Package lends the BMW X6 an instantly more sporting and masculine appearance. It includes a carbon front splitter, rear diffuser and rear spoiler, as well as rear fins and rear side flaps in an elegant yet sporty high-gloss black. These features are complemented by lavishly hand-built carbon BMW M Performance exterior mirror caps, whose high-tech character shines an even brighter spotlight on the individuality and sporting credentials of the BMW X6. A radiator grille with black slats and frame offers a further personalisation option for the X6. The high-gloss black rear fins, meanwhile, lend the car a particularly dynamic and elegant appearance and help to further improve its aerodynamics.

A more dynamic ambience for the interior, too.
The new BMW M Performance Parts also include a host of attractive and sporting details for the interior of the BMW X6. The LED door sill plates in brushed stainless steel look with illuminated BMW M Performance lettering grab the attention the moment you open the front doors. Battery power means they are extremely easy to retrofit, with no need for laying cables. The BMW M Performance carbon interior trim strips mark out the interior clearly from the standard car’s and, like the Steptronic sport transmission’s carbon gearshift lever with BMW M logo, add a sporty and exclusive accent to the cockpit.

Another highlight in the new range of Accessories for the BMW X6 interior is the BMW M Performance steering wheel in Alcantara with attractive carbon trim. BMW X6 gets a performance boost.
In keeping with the overtly sporty design of the BMW X6, the new range of BMW M Performance Parts also includes two performance-boosting Power Kits. The Power Kit for the BMW X6 xDrive30d (fuel consumption combined: 6.0 l/100 km [47.1 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 159–157 g/km)* ramps up the car’s output and torque from 190 kW (258 hp) and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) to 204 kW (277 hp) and 585 Nm (431 lb-ft), and shaves 0.2 seconds off the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) time set by the standard model. The key modifications here include a new control unit with revised engine data and additional hardware components, such as an upgraded intercooler. The Power Kit also comes with larger 18-inch front brake discs, which deliver improved stopping power. The Power Kit for the BMW X6 xDrive35i (fuel consumption combined: 8.6–8.5 l/100 km [32.9–33.2 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 200–198 g/km)* raises output and torque from 225 kW (306 hp) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) to 240 kW (326 hp) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft), improving 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration by as much as 0.5 seconds over the standard model. The increase in power is accompanied by a sportier accelerator set-up delivering faster responses, along with an optimised engine and exhaust soundtrack. Remarkably, both Power Kits give the X6 the same low fuel consumption and emissions in the ECE driving cycle as on the standard-spec version, despite the increases in performance.

The BMW M Performance sport brake retrofit kit enables even sportier braking performance. Larger, inner-vented 19-inch BMW M Performance lightweight brake discs increase the heat resistance and therefore the effectiveness of the brakes under extreme conditions. The blue painted brake callipers, with imprinted BMW M logo at the front, are showcased particularly effectively by open wheel rim designs, giving them clear sporting prowess in terms of style as well as function.

Take a closer look with the BMW M Performance Drive Analyser.
The BMW M Performance Drive Analyser allows owners to examine their driving style with impressive precision. Whether the owner is pursuing lap times on the race track or simply driving from A to B on the road, this new tool records driving dynamic data with professional efficiency. The BMW M Performance Drive Analyser consists of an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) stick, which is plugged into the relevant socket in the car, as well as software in the form of an app for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. The connection between the car and OBD stick is via Bluetooth. The car’s Click & Drive holder, meanwhile, enables easy attachment of the smartphone to the windscreen. All the measurements, such as a range of engine data, the car’s speed and peak values, the gear currently engaged, accelerator and brake usage and even lateral acceleration, are stored straight onto the smartphone/tablet and can be accessed at any time. The driver can study the results directly on their smartphone after every journey.

The BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupé defined a new market segment when it was launched in 2008, and the second generation model is set to take centre stage at the 2014 Paris Motor Show, one of the most important automotive shows taking place from the 4–19 October.

This unique Sports Activity Coupé that combines the versatile character of the BMW X models with the elegance and performance of a sporty BMW Coupé has exceeded all expectations with global sales surpassing a quarter million.  In the Middle East, the BMW X6 consistently ranks amongst the top four best-selling BMW cars with 17,789 vehicles sold since its launch.

Set to go on sale in the Middle East early this December, the all-new BMW X6 has a new exterior design that gives the car a sportier and stronger road presence and a more sophisticated and spacious interior with added comfort that features rear seat entertainment with double screens for the first time.

The line-up of engines available from the December 2014 launch of the new BMW X6 (fuel consumption combined: 9.7 – 6.0 l/100 km [29.1 – 47.1 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 225 – 157 g/km) consists of the latest-generation V8 developing 330 kW/450 hp for the BMW X6 xDrive50i, a 190 kW/258 hp six-cylinder in-line diesel engine for the BMW X6 xDrive30d and another straight-six diesel with three turbochargers and 280 kW/381 hp in the BMW X6 M50d. Ensuring that the noticeably increased performance of the new BMW X6 is accompanied by an up to 22 per cent reduction in average fuel consumption are BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the standard-fitted eight-speed Steptronic sport transmission, extensive BMW EfficientDynamics technology, weight-saving optimisations and enhanced aerodynamics. In spring 2015 the BMW X6 xDrive35i (225 kW/306 hp) and BMW X6 xDrive40d (230 kW/313 hp) will be added to the model range.

The standard – and permanently active – intelligent all-wheel-drive system BMW xDrive optimises traction, directional stability and cornering dynamics, as the situation requires. For improved dynamics, xDrive can optionally link up with adaptive suspension packages, including Dynamic Performance Control.

Chassis packages raise levels of sportiness and comfort, as desired.
Dynamic Performance Control is offered together with Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation as part of the Dynamic adaptive suspension package to deliver a targeted improvement in the car’s sporty handling attributes. Further enhanced ride comfort can be achieved courtesy of air suspension at the rear axle and Dynamic Damper Control, which are included in both the Comfort adaptive suspension package and Adaptive M suspension (standard on the BMW X6 M50d and part of the M Sport package for the other model variants), which also offers bespoke, sports-oriented suspension tuning. The Professional adaptive suspension package, meanwhile, combines the features of Comfort and Dynamic.

Innovative options and BMW ConnectedDrive features.
Adaptive LED headlights, Comfort Access (including hands-free tailgate opening and closing) and other high-class options underline the innovative character of the new BMW X6. Driving pleasure and long-distance comfort, meanwhile, can be further enhanced by features including the Navigation System Professional with Touch Controller, Bang & Olufsen high-end surround-sound system and new Rear Entertainment System Professional.

The world’s first ever Sports Activity Coupé refreshed for 2012

The BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupé defined a new market segment when it was launched in 2008, and has now been upgraded with the new model arriving in the Middle East this June.  More than 150,000 X6 vehicles have been sold worldwide in just three years – far exceeding original plans for the model.  In the Middle East, the X6 is consistently amongst the top three best selling BMW cars with 10,213 vehicles sold since its launch, confirming the popularity of this unique vehicle.

Selective modifications in design and innovative equipment features distinguish the new BMW X6 from its competitors within the premium segment of all-wheel-drive automobiles. A number of exterior changes include a new kidney grille with a wider chrome frame and revised bars, repositioned fog lights, new Adaptive LED headlights and revised red light light cluster on the rear lights.   With its newly designed rear lights with LED technology, the powerfully shaped rear section of the new BMW X6 also features more intense styling.  In addition,  a raised powerdome bonnet appears on the new X6 giving the car a more aggressive and sportier look.   

A host of attractive colour and trim options are available including three new metallic paint colours: Marrakech Brown, Orion Silver and Midnight Blue – and two new upholstery trims:  Ivory White Exclusive Nappa Leather and Vermillion Red Nevada leather.  This new look BMW X6 is completed with bi-colour double spoke design 19 or 20 inch alloy wheels.

The new BMW X6 is offered as standard as a four-seater model. A three-seater rear bench is optionally available. The luggage compartment volume of the Sports Activity Coupé is 570 litres and can be extended to up to 1,450 litres by folding down the rear backrests.

With the market launch of the new BMW X6, the combination of sporty elegance of a large BMW Coupe with the powerful presence of an X model is raised to a new level.  All new BMW X6 models also make use of BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology innovations that reduce fuel consumption and CO² emissions. The petrol engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology available for the BMW X6 deliver impressive pulling power and exemplary low fuel consumption figures. The V8 engine of the BMW X6 xDrive50i delivers 407 hp, while in the BMW X6 xDrive35i an in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine with 306 hp.  Engine power in both models is transferred by means of a standard 8-speed sports transmission including shift paddles on the wheel.

Offering even greater performance, BMW M GmbH, the specialists for high-performance sports cars, will introduced the BMW X6M. Powered by a V8 engine, the new BMW X6M delivers 555 hp and also benefits from detailed refinements in the area of design and equipment. The BMW X6 M is fitted with a 6-speed M Sport automatic transmission, also highlighting its individual status with such features as separately developed suspension technology.

Dynamic Performance Control is a standard feature in all versions of the BMW X6 as an element of the intelligent all-wheel drive system xDrive. This gives greater precision to the electronically controlled power distribution to optimise driving stability, traction and dynamic performance.

There are also numerous BMW ConnectedDrive optional driver assistance technology features for enhanced comfort and safety in the new BMW X6, including: rear-view camera; Surround View; Lane Departure warning and BMW Park Assistant. In addition, the new BMW X6 comes with a full colour Head-Up Display which projects driving-related information onto the windscreen within the driver’s direct field of view.

BMW’s X range of vehicles come with a proven track record of success that was created by the X5 model – launched in 2000 – which established a new segment for premium Sports Activity Vehicles. The X5 has made a significant contribution to over 1.3 million BMW X range vehicles sold in the world to date. Due to the model’s success, the X model family has expanded to include four distinctive models:  BMW X6, X5, X3 and the X1.

 Munich. Superior handling, commanding traction and characteristic styling are key contributors to the stand-out position the BMW X5 and BMW X6 models enjoy among the premium all-wheel-drive vehicles of their segment. Spring 2011 sees the introduction of specific additions to the range of special options to ratchet up the appeal even further. Among other features, new 20-inch light-alloy wheel rims are available for both models, while the choice of BMW ConnectedDrive technology has been augmented by the innovative BMW Apps feature. Meanwhile, a three-seater rear seat option making its debut in April 2011 adds greater flexibility to the usage of the interior of the BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupé, which started out as a four-seater model.

The new rear-seat variant is available for all BMW X6 models with the exception of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, and can also be ordered for the BMW X6 M. The extra seat replaces the storage unit in the rear centre of the four-seater model. The five-seater Sports Activity Coupé is also optionally available in Nevada and Exclusive Nappa leather as well as BMW Individual Merino leather, encompassing the entire colour range. Another novelty is the operation of the standard eight-speed Sport automatic transmission. In future, the BMW X6 will feature shift paddles on the steering wheel whose operating logic follows the principle familiar from BMW M cars: for manual shifting of the eight-speed Sport automatic transmission, the right paddle is used for upshifts and the left for downshifts.

For the BMW X5 and BMW X6 alike, the choice of alloy wheels has been extended by a further option that positively enhances both the car’s dynamic cornering behaviour and its appearance. The 20-inch wheels in Y-spoke design and with a Black high gloss finish are combined with mixed tyres measuring 275/40 R 20 at the front and 315/35 R 20 at the rear. From spring 2011, Comfort Access – likewise available for both models – will include vicinity lighting integrated in the exterior door handles. In addition to automatic unlocking and activation of the ignition, this feature provides effective illumination of the car’s surroundings as soon as the electronic control of Comfort Access has recognised the car key carried by the driver.

Following directly on from the market launch, the extended range of BMW ConnectedDrive services also becomes available for the BMW X5 and the BMW X6. In future both models will be able to avail themselves of the BMW Apps special option. This feature enables owners of an Apple iPhone to stay in touch with the online services Facebook and Twitter while in the car, as well as receive radio stations from all over the world, irrespective of the car’s location, thanks to a web radio function. In addition to the current BMW ConnectedDrive application, customers will have a range of functions and apps available for free download at the Apple App Store.

With these latest innovations, BMW is systematically pursuing its ongoing product optimisation for these two models built at its US plant in Spartanburg. Most recently, last year’s market launch of the new BMW X5 and the comprehensive upgrading of the BMW X6’s drive technology gave a further boost to BMW’s success in this competitive environment. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is the world’s first Sports Activity Coupé
with full hybrid drive offering a driving experience quite unique both in
the segment of BMW X models and in the hybrid segment as a whole. Through its combination of a V8 gasoline engine and electric drive,
the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 offers a significant increase in dynamic performance together with a reduction of fuel consumption and emissions by approximately 20 per cent. This joint enhancement of driving pleasure and efficiency clearly proves that the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is a typical BMW in the hybrid segment.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology offers the driver three significant options: to drive under electric power alone, to use the power of the combustion engine, or to benefit form the combination of both drive modes. Driving completely free of CO2 in the electric mode is possible up to a speed of 60 km/h or 37 mph. The combustion engine then cuts in as required
(as a function of load conditions) and is automatically switched off when driving in overrun at a speed of less than 65 km/h or 40 mph.

The drive system featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 consists of a 300 kW/407 hp V8 power unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and two electric motors developing 67 kW/91 hp and, respectively, 63 kW/86 hp. Maximum system output is 357 kW/485 hp, peak torque is 780 Newton-metres/575 lb-ft. This makes the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 the most powerful hybrid vehicle in the world.

Through its unique balance of performance and fuel economy the
BMW ActiveHybrid X6 sets new standards both in the hybrid vehicle segment and in the overall market of BMW X models. Acceleration from
a standstill to 100 km/h comes in 5.6 seconds. Average fuel consumption in the EU5 test cycle is 9.9 litres/100 km (equivalent to 28.5 mpg imp),
the CO2 emission rating is 231 grams/kilometre.

Integration of the two electric motors in the two-mode active transmission of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 allows two self-sufficient modes of operation. One mode is for setting off in particularly dynamic style and for driving at low speeds, the second is for driving at a higher speeds under optimum conditions. This ensures all the benefits of BMW ActiveHybrid technology, with maximum efficiency under all loads and at all speeds. At the same time the seven-speed automatic transmission provided by the electric motors together with three planetary gearsets and four multiple-plate clutches ensures all the supreme driving behaviour, smoothness and performance so typical of BMW.

When applying the brakes or taking back the gas pedal kinetic energy
is converted into electrical energy and stored in the high-performance battery. To provide this benefit either one or both electric motors act as
a generator, depending on driving conditions. The recuperation efficiency and output achieved by the system is 25 times greater than with Brake Energy Regeneration featured so far in BMW’s production models.
 

Electrical energy is stored in an NiMH high-performance battery with
a capacity of 2.4 kWh. The temperature of the high-voltage battery is controlled as required and with maximum efficiency by liquid cooling interacting with the air conditioning and an external heat exchanger.

The central electronic control unit ensures appropriate interaction
of the combustion engine and electric drive crucial to the outstanding efficiency and unique qualities of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. It converts high-voltage direct current from the high-performance battery into
three-phase alternating current for the two electric motors in the hybrid transmission. It also coordinates all functions of the hybrid system including the distribution of torque and power between the combustion engine and the electric motors as well as the selection of gears.

Over and above the electric motors, the high-performance battery
also supplies electrical energy to the power-consuming items linked to
the 12-volt on-board network. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is equipped with electromechanical power steering and an electrical climate compressor both remaining fully functional also when the combustion engine is switched off and enhancing the overall efficiency of the vehicle to an even higher standard through their on-demand consumption and uptake of energy.

While braking the generator builds up stopping forces in the electric motors acting efficiently on all four wheels and precisely coordinated
with the hydraulic brake effect in accordance with the driver’s stopping and deceleration requirements. This provides not only optimum stopping power, but also the brake feeling so typical of BMW under all driving conditions including the all-electric mode. A further point is that like the BMW X6, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes with Dynamic Stability
control incorporating an enhanced range of functions such as Dry Braking and Fading Compensation as well as an electromechanical and hydraulic parking brake complete with an Auto-Hold function.

In its driving behaviour and motoring comfort, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 offers all the standards provided by BMW’s latest X models, without
the slightest difference between the electrical and the combustion drive mode. Intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive technology with permanent, variable power distribution front-to-rear enhances the unique driving dynamics of the vehicle to an even higher standard.

The current operating mode and function of the drive system is clearly presented by appropriate displays in the instrument cluster and in the Control Display itself. The charge level of the high-performance battery
at the disposal of the driver and the current operating mode are shown
by appropriate gauges beneath the rev counter. Being informed of the power uptake when driving in the electric mode, the driver may if he
wish maintain that mode longer in the interest of extra efficiency. And if

Unique efficiency ensured by two-mode active transmission.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology has been developed specifically for use in a particularly dynamic vehicle in this segment and for a broad range of practical use going far beyond city traffic as such. The big advantage, therefore, is the overall optimisation of drivetrain efficiency in all speed ranges and under all conditions.

The two-mode active transmission is based on an ECVT (electric continuously variable transmission) operating in two separate modes. One mode is for setting off with particular power and for driving at low speeds, the second is for motoring at high speeds.

When setting off only one of the two electric motors is activated. Then,
as soon as the driver requires more power, the second electric motor automatically activates the combustion engine and subsequently serves
as a generator providing a permanent supply of electric power.

When driving steadily at a higher speed most of the power required is delivered by the combustion engine in a largely mechanical process. Here again, one of the two electric motors acts as a generator.

Together with the mechanical components, the electric motors form a joint transmission unit providing the optimum transmission ratio at all times as a function of driving conditions. The mechanical link within the two-mode
active transmission is provided by three planetary gearsets in a configuration dividing the drive power generated by the combustion engine and the two electric motors into two transmission modes and therefore ensuring a degree of variability in combining the two power sources conventional hybrid drive would not be able to provide.

The two operating modes of the electric motors are supplemented and enhanced by fixed transmission ratios providing a total of seven gears for full use of the highly efficient hybrid function throughout the vehicle’s complete range of operation and at the same time maintaining the driving performance so typical of BMW.

Conventional but unique all in one: V8 gasoline engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and High Precision Injection.

The combustion engine is a technically unique eight-cylinder featured for
the first time in the BMW X6 xDrive50i. The world’s first V8 gasoline engine with two turbochargers in the V-section between the two rows of cylinders excels in particular through its smooth development of power setting in
from the start and continuing in an ongoing surge throughout the entire speed range. The exceptionally spontaneous and direct response of this V8 with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology results directly from the compact configuration of the engine allowing short manifolds as well as large cross-sections on the intake and exhaust side.

Displacing 4.4 litres, this outstanding eight-cylinder delivers maximum output of 300 kW/407 hp consistently maintained between 5,500 and 6,400 rpm. Superior torque of 600 Newton-metres/442 lb-ft is maintained all the way from 1,750 to 4 ,500 rpm, with High Precision Injection ensuring precise supply of fuel at all times.

Piezo-injectors positioned in the middle between the valves ensure a
smooth, efficient and clean combustion process, the V8 naturally fulfilling both the European EU5 standard as well as the ULEV II limits in the USA.

Compared with the power unit featured in the BMW X6 xDrive50i, this
new engine has been modified in numerous respects to the specific requirements of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. The first point is that there is
no starter, no alternator and belt drive for the climate compressor and hydraulic pump on the power steering. The main and low-temperature circuits in the cooling system have been modified for all-electric operation,
the low-temperature circuit already serving to cool the charge air in the combustion engine being used additionally to cool the power electronics.

A specifically designed hybrid engine cover, finally, marks a clear difference versus the power unit in the BMW X6 xDrive50i.

Electric motors for enhanced performance on no extra fuel.

When accelerating the eight-cylinder power unit of the
BMW ActiveHybrid X6, joining forces with the electric motors, ensures optimum efficiency and dynamic performance. As soon as the driver
requires more power the two electric motors fed by the high-voltage energy battery supply additional torque for enhanced performance. This boost
effect significantly increases the overall output of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, without any increase in fuel consumption.

While the two electric motors have almost the same output, they have
been modified in their performance characteristics to meet individual requirements. The power delivered is 67 kW/91 hp and. respectively, 63 kW/86 hp, with peak torque of 260 Newton-metres/192 lb-ft and 280 Newton-metres/206 lb-ft.

The electric motors support the combustion engine effectively throughout the entire speed range, the additional electrically generated drive power serving to reduce the power output required on the combustion engine when driving steadily at a higher speed. This shift in load is perfectly controlled
at all times to give the overall system enhanced efficiency and its maximum effect under practical driving conditions.

The electronic control unit is also able to provide a consistent, ongoing
surge of power, maximum power being generated when shifting gears through the so-called response boost effect. When kicking down the accelerator for maximum acceleration, the control unit generates stationary boost right from the start in the initial downshift phase, interaction of response boost and stationary boost ensuring a very spontaneous and direct response to every movement of the gas pedal.

Maximum system output is 357 kW/485 hp, with peak torque of 780 Newton-metres/575 lb-ft. This makes the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 the most powerful hybrid vehicle in the world, with acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds and top speed is limited electronically to 236 km/h or 146 mph (or, respectively, 250 km/h or 155 mph with the optional Sports Package).

The unique positon of BMW ActiveHybrid X6 within the BMW X segment
as a whole follows very clearly and convincingly from the comparison of these performance figures, on the one hand, with the vehicle’s fuel consumption
and emission ratings, on the other. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 combines its supreme dynamism with equally fascinating efficiency, with fuel average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of just 9.9 ltr/100 km (equal to 28.5 mpg imp) and a CO2 rating of 231 grams per kilometre.

All-electrical driving mode reducing emissions to zero.

With its combination of two-mode active transmission and high-performance battery, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is able to run on its electric motors alone. This makes it a zero emission vehicle under such conditions, fulfilling even the strictest requirements foreseen for the future and ensuring the highest conceivable level of mobility.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 may run on electric power alone regardless of the ambient temperature, minimum operating temperatures being required only for the engine coolant, transmission fluid and high-voltage battery. A further requirement is that the high-performance battery is adequately charged.

Top speed in the electric mode is 60 km/h or 37 mph, maximum range is
2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles).

While driving electrically, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 retains all its safety
and comfort functions. The brakes remain fully operative thanks to electronic vacuum supply, not requiring the combustion engine to develop their full effect. The same applies to the EPS Electronic Power Steering, with steering assistance being generated as required and with maximum efficiency by
an electric motor.

Even the air conditioning remains fully available without any restrictions, running efficiently on an electrical climate compressor. And since the high-performance battery supplies electric power to the complete 12-volt on-board network through a voltage converter regardless of the driving mode, all other power-consuming items such as the lights and the on-board entertainment system remain fully functional at their usual, consistent level.

Recuperation: electric power generated without additional fuel consumption.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 features an enhanced version of Brake Energy Regeneration already used in BMW’s current models running on a combustion engine alone, generating the electric power saved in the high-performance battery. In this case the electric motors act as generators in overrun and when applying the brakes in order to feed electric power into the high-voltage battery unit, again in the interest of maximum efficiency.

This uses energy otherwise simply lost in conventional vehicles as heat escaping through the brakes – and depending on road speed, one or both
of the electric motors may perform this function.

The power delivered by the generator is approximately 50 kW, about 25 times as much as the power provided so far by Brake Energy Regeneration.

Generator delivering electrical brake power.

In the generator mode the two electric motors supply a lot of the energy required to slow down the vehicle whenever necessary. Indeed, the stopping power generated in this way is up to 3 metres/sec2 or, respectively, 0.3 g in a purely recuperative process, significantly reducing the load acting on the mechanical brake system.

Sensotronic Brake Actuation (SBA) in the BMW Active Hybrid X6 may be used at any time without a direct mechanical connection between the brake pedal and the hydraulic circuit. Pedal movement is recorded by sensors and split up by a control unit into brake power generated in a regenerating and
in a hydraulic process. At the same time an integrated pedal force simulator generates the usual brake feeling for the driver as an additional factor in this brake-by-wire solution.

The active brake servo builds up brake pressure with electrical control according to the signals emitted by the control unit. To ensure brake power assistance also in the all-electric mode, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes furthermore with an electrical under-pressure pump replacing the vacuum pressure in the intake system of the combustion engine on a conventional vehicle. A mechanical fallback function, in turn, guarantees full operation of the brake system in the event of a failure or deficiency in the electrical system, in which case the stopping power required is generated by the hydraulic system alone, like on a conventional vehicle.

The primary task of the SBA system is to split up the brake power required
by the driver into a regenerating and a hydraulic brake factor. Via the xDrive powertrain, the hybrid system in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is able to
transmit brake forces to all four wheels generated by the stopping power of the recuperative electric motors. And whenever the stopping power required exceeds the level of 3 metres/sec2, the control unit builds up additional brake force through the mechanical brake by means of the active brake servo.

In braking situations critical to driving stability the control unit receives additional signals from the DSC Dynamic Stability Control, intervening in the brakes and engine management to keep the vehicle safely on course. This ensures safe braking manoeuvres under all conditions, with all driving stability systems developing their complete effect when required regardless of whether the stopping power needed is generated electrically or hydraulically.

A further point is that all driving stability systems are tailored in their
operation to the dynamic character of the Sports Activity Coupé also on
the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. DTC Dynamic Traction Control selected at the touch of a button, for example, provides maximum traction and drive power
on loose surfaces such as snow or sand thanks to its higher slip thresholds. And with the DTC mode activated, the driver may opt for a particularly
sporting style of motoring all the way to a controlled power slide in bends.

BMW xDrive: intelligent all-wheel drive for extra performance, optimum driving stability and supreme traction.

The sports-oriented driving behaviour of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is
also attributable to xDrive all-wheel-drive technology. Permanent all-wheel drive with electronically controlled, variable distribution of drive power front-to-rear gives the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, like all BMW X models, not only superior traction, but also enhanced driving dynamics.

BMW xDrive qualifies as an intelligent all-wheel-drive system in particular through the smooth division of drive power ensured by a power divider with an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch feeding the appropriate level of power to the right axle with optimum wheel contact and grip on the road.

Under normal conditions BMW xDrive spreads out drive power to the front and rear axle in a 40:60 split, sensors consistently measuring wheel slip
both front and rear. The system is able to vary the balance of drive power within fractions of a second, BMW xDrive, unlike conventional all-wheel-drive systems, thus looking ahead and not only responding when a wheel is already spinning.

Benefiting from these abilities, BMW xDrive raises the driving dynamics of
the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 to an even higher level by recognising even the slightest tendency to over- or understeer right from the start and taking appropriate counter-action.

EPS Electronic Power Steering for even greater driving comfort.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is the first BMW X model to feature EPS Electronic Power Steering. This allows active steering assistance both
when driving with the combustion engine and in the all-electric mode.

EPS provides optimum steering assistance under all conditions to give the driver that special feeling so typical of the BMW brand. Another advantage
is the further reduction of fuel consumption, EPS significantly reducing the energy required for steering assistance compared with conventional, hydraulic power steering, since Electronic Power Steering only becomes active when steering assistance is actually required or desired by the driver. So when driving straight ahead in a straight line, for example, the electric motor does not consume any energy whatsoever.

Electronic Power Steering on the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes complete with fully integrated speed-related Servotronic steering assistance, the reduction of assistance at high speeds ensuring not only safe directional stability but also extremely precise steering behaviour in bends as well as
the safe feeling at high speeds again so characteristic of a BMW. At low speeds, on the other hand, for example when parking, extra power
assistance significantly reduces the steering forces required.

Liquid cooling for even greater performance on the
high-performance battery.

The high-voltage battery featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes
in nickel-metal hydrid technology (NiMH). Capacity is 2.4 kWh, with 1.4 kWh available actively for practical use. Maximum output, in turn, is 57 kW, with
the battery’s control unit permanently determining the output level currently available as well as the charge status of the battery.

The high-performance battery comes with its own liquid cooling system incorporating a heat exchanger to cool the battery through the flow of
air from the outside and, additionally, through the cooling circuit in the air conditioning. These two circuits are activated either individually or
in combination with one another, depending on current requirements,
the control unit selecting the most effective and efficient cooling option
as a function of ambient temperature and the temperature of the
high-voltage storage unit.

Cooling by the air conditioning is activated by an appropriate switch valve, with the electrical climate compressor being switched on automatically whenever required. The interior and the high-voltage battery being cooled separately of one another, cooling is far more efficient than with a system using air cooling only, raising the energy storage medium to a far higher level of performance and retaining the hybrid functions longer in extreme weather and whenever the driver prefers a very sporting style of motoring. Ultimately, this gives BMW ActiveHybrid X6 an outstanding potential in driving dynamics far superior to other hybrid vehicles in the market.

Power electronics developed especially for BMW ActiveHybrid technology ensures energy management on board the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 both
very efficient and flexible in use. The electronic control system consistently controls the distribution of energy as a function of ambient conditions, the status of the vehicle, and the demands made by the driver. The most important incoming and control factor for the operating strategy chosen
is the charge status of the high-performance battery saving the electrical energy generated through recuperation.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 naturally complies in full with the integral
safety concepts developed for hybrid vehicles by BMW. With central
control functions being integrated both in the power electronics and the energy battery, the system has the ideal starting point for fulfilling all
kinds of international crash test standards as well as the demanding internal standards of the BMW Group, in particular guaranteeing the highest level of operating safety on all components in the high-voltage on-board network.

Some of the features of this safety concept are the different colours of
cables to avoid any confusion, the presentation of clear safety warnings
and the all-round cover on the entire system using extra-large insulation panels and newly developed connectors.

The high-voltage battery is housed in a high load-resistant steel casing and
is fitted firmly inside the car, just above the rear axle at an extremely safe point for the event of a collision. The status of the storage modules is constantly supervised by integrated safety electronics, the driver being informed immediately of any malfunction and, wherever necessary, the entire system being automatically discharged and deactivated.

In the event of a collision, the system is switched off automatically within fractions of a second, the car’s central safety electronics assessing the severity of an accident and ensuring a safe operating mode as a function
of current, individual requirements.

Special hybrid drive Auto Start Stop function.

In city traffic the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 can be run in the all-electric mode without using the combustion engine. A further advantage is that the vehicle comes with a new generation of Auto Start Stop technology featured here
for the first time. Tailored specifically to the requirements of a hybrid car,
this new Auto Start Stop function allows a much higher standard of comfort and is available more often than the conventional system. Automatic deactivation of the combustion engine at a road junction or at the traffic lights does not in any way impair the driving experience, just as the V8 power unit will start again immediately as soon as the driver presses down the gas pedal.

BMW ActiveHybrid X6 provides the Auto Start Stop function consistently
at all outside temperatures, no matter how cold or how hot.

As long as the engine is switched off, the electric climate compressor automatically maintains the climate and temperature desired within the passenger compartment. All other electrically operated functions are
also maintained, with the on-board network being consistently supplied
with power from the high-voltage storage unit. The only way to deactivate
the special hybrid Auto Start Stop function is by choosing the manual gearshift mode on the automatic transmission.

Additional displays informing the driver of the operating status and efficiency of the hybrid system.

Operation of the hybrid system and current operating conditions are presented clearly and understandably in the displays. The most important information is shown in the central instrument cluster, clearly separated according to the various operating modes. Further information and technical explanations, in turn, are shown in the Info Display in the centre console.

The drive displays are split up into a conventional rev counter for the combustion engine and special displays for electric drive in the lower part of the instrument cluster. Clear visual presentation of these functions shows
the driver that the vehicle is ready to go. The electric drive displays relevant
to the driver are the charge status of the high-voltage storage unit, the recuperation display, the support provided by the electric motors when accelerating through their boost function, as well as the driving stages in the all-electric mode. In the Control Display this information is supplemented by additional data on current operating conditions and the current flow of energy.

Specific set-up of the suspension and the lightweight brakes.

The chassis and suspension of the BMW Active Hybrid X6 is largely the
same as the technology already featured on the BMW X6 xDrive50i. The front axle is a double track arm configuration ensuring excellent driving dynamics, superior motoring comfort and smooth directional stability. The Integral IV rear axle has been modified to reflect the specific characteristics of the hybrid model in terms of weight distribution and drive power, guaranteeing absolute supremacy on the road also ensured by self-levelling with air suspension providing a consistent ride height also when carrying a heavy load.

Lightweight brakes decelerate the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 by means of
swing-calliper brake discs incorporating covers and pistons made of aluminium. Brake disc diameter is 385 millimetres or 15.2” up front and
345 millimetres or 13.6” at the rear. The entire brake system ensures a high standard of comfort in applying the brakes and extreme resistance to fading.

Consistent lightweight engineering serves to reduce unsprung masses and improve the vehicle’s driving comfort and agility.

Very attractive 19-inch light-alloy rims in V-spoke design come as standard, and 20-inch light-alloy rims in aerodynamically optimised Streamline design have been developed exclusively for the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 as an option. In each case the tyres are runflat tyres enabling the driver to continue to the workshop even after a complete loss of pressure. And it almost goes without saying that the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes as standard with a Tyre Defect Indicator incorporating individual tyre pressure control.

Bodyshell and safety: intelligent lightweight construction, optimised occupant safety.

Intelligent lightweight construction and a special structure for maximum solidity also characterise the bodyshell of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. Apart from frontal and hip thorax airbags, curtain head airbags at the side are also standard within the interior.

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes with three-point inertia-reel seat belts
on all seats featuring belt force limiters and belt latch tensioners on the front seats. To protect the occupants from cervical spine injury in the event of a collision at the rear, the front seats feature crash-activated headrests, the
rear seats come as standard with ISOFIX child seat fastenings.

All restraint systems are masterminded by central safety electronics, rollover sensors serving to activate the curtain airbags and belt latch tensioners in
the event of an impending rollover.

Featured as standard, dual bi-xenon headlights not only ensure optimum illumination of the road ahead in the dark, but also provide a daytime light function through their corona rings. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 furthermore comes as standard with a light and rain sensor automatically controlling the vehicle’s lights and screenwipers as required. Additional comfort at night
is provided by the High Beam Assistant featured as part of
BMW ConnectedDrive.

Another feature available as an option is Adaptive Headlights following the
 road ahead in providing exact the right illumination. This option comes complete with Bending Lights and variable light distribution broadening

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes as standard with the BMW Professional navigation system masterminded via iDrive likewise featured as standard or, respectively, with enhanced voice control. Using BMW Routes, in turn,

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is the world's first Sports Activity
Coupé with full hybrid drive offering a driving experience quite
unique both in the segment of BMW X models and in the hybrid segment as
a whole. Through its combination of a V8 gasoline engine and electric
drive, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 offers a significant increase in dynamic
performance together with a reduction of fuel consumption and emissions
by approximately 20 per cent. This joint enhancement of driving
pleasure and efficiency clearly proves that the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is
a typical BMW in the hybrid segment. BMW ActiveHybrid technology
offers the driver three significant options: to drive under electric
power alone, to use the power of the combustion engine, or to benefit
form the combination of both drive modes. Driving completely free of
CO2 in the electric mode is possible up to a speed of 60 km/h or 37
mph. The combustion engine then cuts in as required (as a function of
load conditions) and is automatically switched off when driving in

brakes or taking back the gas pedal kinetic energy is converted into
electrical energy and stored in the high-performance battery. To

Energy Regeneration featured so far in BMW's production models.
Electrical energy is stored in an NiMH high-performance battery with a
capacity of 2.4 kWh. The temperature of the high-voltage battery is
controlled as required and with maximum efficiency by liquid cooling
interacting with the air conditioning and an external heat exchanger.
The central electronic control unit ensures appropriate interaction of
the combustion engine and electric drive crucial to the outstanding
efficiency and unique qualities of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. It converts
high-voltage direct current from the high-performance battery into
three-phase alternating current for the two electric motors in the
hybrid transmission. It also coordinates all functions of the hybrid
system including the distribution of torque and power between the
combustion engine and the electric motors as well as the selection of
gears. Over and above the electric motors, the high-performance
battery also supplies electrical energy to the power-consuming items
linked to the 12-volt on-board network. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is
equipped with electromechanical power steering and an electrical
climate compressor both remaining fully functional also when the
combustion engine is switched off and enhancing the overall efficiency
of the vehicle to an even higher standard through their on-demand
consumption and uptake of energy. While braking the generator builds

by two-mode active transmission. BMW ActiveHybrid technology has been
developed specifically for use in a particularly dynamic vehicle in
this segment and for a broad range of practical use going far beyond
city traffic as such. The big advantage, therefore, is the overall
optimisation of drivetrain efficiency in all speed ranges and under all
conditions. The two-mode active transmission is based on an ECVT
(electric continuously variable transmission) operating in two separate
modes. One mode is for setting off with particular power and for
driving at low speeds, the second is for motoring at high speeds.
When setting off only one of the two electric motors is activated.

motor automatically activates the combustion engine and subsequently

Together with the mechanical components, the electric motors form a
joint transmission unit providing the optimum transmission ratio at all
times as a function of driving conditions. The mechanical link within
the two-mode active transmission is provided by three planetary
gearsets in a configuration dividing the drive power generated by the
combustion engine and the two electric motors into two transmission
modes and therefore ensuring a degree of variability in combining the
two power sources conventional hybrid drive would not be able to
provide. The two operating modes of the electric motors are
supplemented and enhanced by fixed transmission ratios providing a
total of seven gears for full use of the highly efficient hybrid
function throughout the vehicle's complete range of operation and at
the same time maintaining the driving performance so typical of BMW.
Conventional but unique all in one: V8 gasoline engine with BMW
TwinPower Turbo Technology and High Precision Injection. The
combustion engine is a technically unique eight-cylinder featured for
the first time in the BMW X6 xDrive50i. The world's first V8 gasoline
engine with two turbochargers in the V-section between the two rows of
cylinders excels in particular through its smooth development of power
setting in from the start and continuing in an ongoing surge throughout
the entire speed range. The exceptionally spontaneous and direct
response of this V8 with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology results
directly from the compact configuration of the engine allowing short
manifolds as well as large cross-sections on the intake and exhaust
side. Displacing 4.4 litres, this outstanding eight-cylinder delivers
maximum output of 300 kW/407 hp consistently maintained between 5,500
and 6,400 rpm. Superior torque of 600 Newton-metres/442 lb-ft is
maintained all the way from 1,750 to 4 ,500 rpm, with High Precision
Injection ensuring precise supply of fuel at all times.
Piezo-injectors positioned in the middle between the valves ensure a
smooth, efficient and clean combustion process, the V8 naturally
fulfilling both the European EU5 standard as well as the ULEV II limits
in the USA. Compared with the power unit featured in the BMW X6
xDrive50i, this new engine has been modified in numerous respects to
the specific requirements of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6. The first point
is that there is no starter, no alternator and belt drive for the
climate compressor and hydraulic pump on the power steering. The main
and low-temperature circuits in the cooling system have been modified
for all-electric operation, the low-temperature circuit already serving
to cool the charge air in the combustion engine being used additionally
to cool the power electronics. A specifically designed hybrid engine
cover, finally, marks a clear difference versus the power unit in the
BMW X6 xDrive50i. Electric motors for enhanced performance on no extra
fuel. When accelerating the eight-cylinder power unit of the BMW
ActiveHybrid X6, joining forces with the electric motors, ensures
optimum efficiency and dynamic performance. As soon as the driver
requires more power the two electric motors fed by the high-voltage
energy battery supply additional torque for enhanced performance. This
boost effect significantly increases the overall output of the BMW
ActiveHybrid X6, without any increase in fuel consumption. While the
two electric motors have almost the same output, they have been
modified in their performance characteristics to meet individual
requirements. The power delivered is 67 kW/91 hp and. respectively, 63
kW/86 hp, with peak torque of 260 Newton-metres/192 lb-ft and 280
Newton-metres/206 lb-ft. The electric motors support the combustion
engine effectively throughout the entire speed range, the additional
electrically generated drive power serving to reduce the power output
required on the combustion engine when driving steadily at a higher
speed. This shift in load is perfectly controlled at all times to give
the overall system enhanced efficiency and its maximum effect under
practical driving conditions. The electronic control unit is also able
to provide a consistent, ongoing surge of power, maximum power being
generated when shifting gears through the so-called response boost
effect. When kicking down the accelerator for maximum acceleration, the
control unit generates stationary boost right from the start in the
initial downshift phase, interaction of response boost and stationary
boost ensuring a very spontaneous and direct response to every movement
of the gas pedal. Maximum system output is 357 kW/485 hp, with peak
torque of 780 Newton-metres/575 lb-ft. This makes the BMW ActiveHybrid
X6 the most powerful hybrid vehicle in the world, with acceleration
from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds and top speed is
limited electronically to 236 km/h or 146 mph (or, respectively, 250
km/h or 155 mph with the optional Sports Package). The unique positon

battery, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is able to run on its electric motors
alone. This makes it a zero emission vehicle under such conditions,
fulfilling even the strictest requirements foreseen for the future and
ensuring the highest conceivable level of mobility. The BMW
ActiveHybrid X6 may run on electric power alone regardless of the
ambient temperature, minimum operating temperatures being required only
for the engine coolant, transmission fluid and high-voltage battery. A

range is 2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles). While driving electrically, the
BMW ActiveHybrid X6 retains all its safety and comfort functions. The
brakes remain fully operative thanks to electronic vacuum supply, not
requiring the combustion engine to develop their full effect. The same
applies to the EPS Electronic Power Steering, with steering assistance
being generated as required and with maximum efficiency by an electric
motor. Even the air conditioning remains fully available without any
restrictions, running efficiently on an electrical climate compressor.
And since the high-performance battery supplies electric power to the
complete 12-volt on-board network through a voltage converter
regardless of the driving mode, all other power-consuming items such as
the lights and the on-board entertainment system remain fully
functional at their usual, consistent level. Recuperation: electric
power generated without additional fuel consumption. The BMW
ActiveHybrid X6 features an enhanced version of Brake Energy
Regeneration already used in BMW's current models running on a
combustion engine alone, generating the electric power saved in the
high-performance battery. In this case the electric motors act as
generators in overrun and when applying the brakes in order to feed
electric power into the high-voltage battery unit, again in the
interest of maximum efficiency. This uses energy otherwise simply lost
in conventional vehicles as heat escaping through the brakes - and
depending on road speed, one or both of the electric motors may perform
this function. The power delivered by the generator is approximately
50 kW, about 25 times as much as the power provided so far by Brake
Energy Regeneration. Generator delivering electrical brake power. In
the generator mode the two electric motors supply a lot of the energy
required to slow down the vehicle whenever necessary. Indeed, the
stopping power generated in this way is up to 3 metres/sec2 or,
respectively, 0.3 g in a purely recuperative process, significantly
reducing the load acting on the mechanical brake system. Sensotronic
Brake Actuation (SBA) in the BMW Active Hybrid X6 may be used at any
time without a direct mechanical connection between the brake pedal and
the hydraulic circuit. Pedal movement is recorded by sensors and split
up by a control unit into brake power generated in a regenerating and
in a hydraulic process. At the same time an integrated pedal force
simulator generates the usual brake feeling for the driver as an
additional factor in this brake-by-wire solution. The active brake
servo builds up brake pressure with electrical control according to the
signals emitted by the control unit. To ensure brake power assistance
also in the all-electric mode, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes
furthermore with an electrical under-pressure pump replacing the vacuum
pressure in the intake system of the combustion engine on a
conventional vehicle. A mechanical fallback function, in turn,
guarantees full operation of the brake system in the event of a failure
or deficiency in the electrical system, in which case the stopping
power required is generated by the hydraulic system alone, like on a
conventional vehicle. The primary task of the SBA system is to split
up the brake power required by the driver into a regenerating and a
hydraulic brake factor. Via the xDrive powertrain, the hybrid system in
the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is able to transmit brake forces to all four
wheels generated by the stopping power of the recuperative electric
motors. And whenever the stopping power required exceeds the level of 3
metres/sec2, the control unit builds up additional brake force through
the mechanical brake by means of the active brake servo. In braking
situations critical to driving stability the control unit receives
additional signals from the DSC Dynamic Stability Control, intervening
in the brakes and engine management to keep the vehicle safely on
course. This ensures safe braking manoeuvres under all conditions, with
all driving stability systems developing their complete effect when
required regardless of whether the stopping power needed is generated
electrically or hydraulically. A further point is that all driving
stability systems are tailored in their operation to the dynamic
character of the Sports Activity Coupé also on the BMW
ActiveHybrid X6. DTC Dynamic Traction Control selected at the touch of
a button, for example, provides maximum traction and drive power on
loose surfaces such as snow or sand thanks to its higher slip
thresholds. And with the DTC mode activated, the driver may opt for a
particularly sporting style of motoring all the way to a controlled
power slide in bends. BMW xDrive: intelligent all-wheel drive for
extra performance, optimum driving stability and supreme traction.
The sports-oriented driving behaviour of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is
also attributable to xDrive all-wheel-drive technology. Permanent
all-wheel drive with electronically controlled, variable distribution
of drive power front-to-rear gives the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, like all
BMW X models, not only superior traction, but also enhanced driving
dynamics. BMW xDrive qualifies as an intelligent all-wheel-drive
system in particular through the smooth division of drive power ensured
by a power divider with an electronically controlled multiple-plate
clutch feeding the appropriate level of power to the right axle with
optimum wheel contact and grip on the road. Under normal conditions
BMW xDrive spreads out drive power to the front and rear axle in a
40:60 split, sensors consistently measuring wheel slip both front and
rear. The system is able to vary the balance of drive power within
fractions of a second, BMW xDrive, unlike conventional all-wheel-drive
systems, thus looking ahead and not only responding when a wheel is
already spinning. Benefiting from these abilities, BMW xDrive raises
the driving dynamics of the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 to an even higher level
by recognising even the slightest tendency to over- or understeer right
from the start and taking appropriate counter-action. EPS Electronic
Power Steering for even greater driving comfort. The BMW ActiveHybrid
X6 is the first BMW X model to feature EPS Electronic Power Steering.
This allows active steering assistance both when driving with the
combustion engine and in the all-electric mode. EPS provides optimum
steering assistance under all conditions to give the driver that
special feeling so typical of the BMW brand. Another advantage is the
further reduction of fuel consumption, EPS significantly reducing the
energy required for steering assistance compared with conventional,
hydraulic power steering, since Electronic Power Steering only becomes
active when steering assistance is actually required or desired by the
driver. So when driving straight ahead in a straight line, for example,
the electric motor does not consume any energy whatsoever. Electronic
Power Steering on the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 comes complete with fully
integrated speed-related Servotronic steering assistance, the reduction
of assistance at high speeds ensuring not only safe directional
stability but also extremely precise steering behaviour in bends as
well as the safe feeling at high speeds again so characteristic of a
BMW. At low speeds, on the other hand, for example when parking, extra
power assistance significantly reduces the steering forces required.
Liquid cooling for even greater performance on the high-performance
battery. The high-voltage battery featured in the BMW ActiveHybrid X6
comes in nickel-metal hydrid technology (NiMH). Capacity is 2.4 kWh,
with 1.4 kWh available actively for practical use. Maximum output, in
turn, is 57 kW, with the battery's control unit permanently determining
the output level currently available as well as the charge status of
the battery. The high-performance battery comes with its own liquid
cooling system incorporating a heat exchanger to cool the battery
through the flow of air from the outside and, additionally, through the
cooling circuit in the air conditioning. These two circuits are
activated either individually or in combination with one another,
depending on current requirements, the control unit selecting the most
effective and efficient cooling option as a function of ambient
temperature and the temperature of the high-voltage storage unit.
Cooling by the air conditioning is activated by an appropriate switch
valve, with the electrical climate compressor being switched on
automatically whenever required. The interior and the high-voltage
battery being cooled separately of one another, cooling is far more
efficient than with a system using air cooling only, raising the energy
storage medium to a far higher level of performance and retaining the
hybrid functions longer in extreme weather and whenever the driver
prefers a very sporting style of motoring. Ultimately, this gives BMW
ActiveHybrid X6 an outstanding potential in driving dynamics far
superior to other hybrid vehicles in the market. Intelligent energy
management and integral safety concept. Power electronics developed
especially for BMW ActiveHybrid technology ensures energy management on
board the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 both very efficient and flexible in use.
The electronic control system consistently controls the distribution of
energy as a function of ambient conditions, the status of the vehicle,
and the demands made by the driver. The most important incoming and
control factor for the operating strategy chosen is the charge status
of the high-performance battery saving the electrical energy generated
through recuperation. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 naturally complies in
full with the integral safety concepts developed for hybrid vehicles by
BMW. With central control functions being integrated both in the power
electronics and the energy battery, the system has the ideal starting
point for fulfilling all kinds of international crash test standards as
well as the demanding internal standards of the BMW Group, in
particular guaranteeing the highest level of operating safety on all
components in the high-voltage on-board network. Some of the features
of this safety concept are the different colours of cables to avoid any
confusion, the presentation of clear safety warnings and the all-round
cover on the entire system using extra-large insulation panels and
newly developed connectors. The high-voltage battery is housed in a
high load-resistant steel casing and is fitted firmly inside the car,
just above the rear axle at an extremely safe point for the event of a
collision. The status of the storage modules is constantly supervised
by integrated safety electronics, the driver being informed immediately
of any malfunction and, wherever necessary, the entire system being
automatically discharged and deactivated. In the event of a collision,
the system is switched off automatically within fractions of a second,
the car's central safety electronics assessing the severity of an
accident and ensuring a safe operating mode as a function of current,

The BMW X6, the world's first Sport Activity Coupé, has extended
its product range to include a more powerful X6 xDrive50i variant that
features a new 4.4-litre V8 engine with Twin Turbo technology. The
latest model joins the highly successful BMW X6 xDrive35i that was

Activity Coupe to Reach Target Consumers in Financial Community
Woodcliff Lake, NJ - April 29, 2008... BMW of North America and its
advertising agency GSD&M Idea City are rolling out a 3-D virtual
vehicle tour to herald the arrival of the first-ever BMW X6. Going
direct to target consumers with a hologram of the vehicle, the world's
first sports activity coupe will be featured in prominent buildings in
New York City's financial district over a four-week period. Employing
patented technology from Dutch advertising company viZoo, the 2008 BMW
X6 will be projected in three dimensions, appearing as a hologram,
inside a ten-foot square, BMW-branded enclosure. Inside the
light-controlled space, an animation suggesting the vehicle's unique
combination of coupe agility and sports activity vehicle versatility
runs on a loop. "Busy finance executives represent an important
sampling of the target consumers for the new BMW X6," said Jack
Pitney, Vice President, Marketing, BMW of North America. "Since
these prospective buyers rarely have time to visit a dealer showroom,
our virtual tour allows them to 'experience' the performance, agility
and utility of the X6 by bringing the showroom to them." An
interactive touch-screen inside the enclosure will allow people to

interior, explore the vehicle features, and get a sense of the generous

driving dynamics and outstanding supremacy. The exterior design of the
BMW X6 sports a striking front end, stretched side lines and expresses

BMW's intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive technology and Dynamic

character requires innovative technology. The objective to combine
that Sheer Driving Pleasure so typical of BMW with a significant
reduction of fuel consumption and emissions in BMW's first full hybrid,
called for the development of innovative technology offering a
synthesis of the combustion engine and the electric motor. To make this
process of development as efficient as possible, the BMW Group has
joined forces with General Motors and DaimlerChrysler to form the Global
Hybrid Cooperation, serving to develop the next generation of hybrid
drive systems. These three equal partners pool their know-how and
resources in the GM, Daimler, Chrysler and BMW Hybrid Development
Center in Troy (Michigan, USA), concentrating in the process on a
flexible system concept allowing each of the companies involved to
integrate the particular concept, design and construction of their cars
in the new technology, focusing on the specific features of each brand.
This is precisely why the technology of the two-mode active
transmission, created through this cooperation, is part of the BMW
ActiveHybrid modular development system. Optimized use of energy and
superior power in every situation. The innovative active transmission
featured by the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid combines two compact,
high-performance electric motors with a transmission using fixed
transmission ratios. These drive systems are connected to one another
by three planetary gearsets allowing a power split covering the drive
forces of the combustion engine and the electric motors in two
transmission modes. Thus, a level of variability that is quite
impossible to achieve on a conventional hybrid drivetrain is ensured
thanks to the combination of the two drive sources, which are able to
provide optimum power and maximum efficiency under all driving
conditions and power requirements from the driver. The system, referred
to as the two-mode active transmission on account of its two operating
modes, also consists of a high-performance battery, power electronics
with an integrated inverter module and the required cables. The
two-mode active transmission is based on an electrical continuously
variable transmission mode (ECVT). The two operating modes-one of which
has been optimized for low-, the other for high-speeds-are supplemented
by fixed transmission ratios. The two power-split ECVT sections allow
the drivetrain to run at continuously variable speeds and ensure full,
highly efficient hybrid functions throughout the complete operating
range of the vehicleperformance typical to a BMW. As a result, the
innovative system in the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid serves to reduce
fuel consumption by up to 20 percent in relation to a comparable BMW
running on a combustion engine alone. Furthermore, with the two-mode
system, the electric motors are very compact in size-facilitating
integration into the overall vehicle and minimizing an increase in
weight, which in the case of the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, is lower
than conventional hybrid cars offering comparable power. The BMW
Concept X6 ActiveHybrid can be driven on electric power only, on the
combustion engine alone or with a combination of both power units.
Depending on driving conditions, the electric motors may also be used
for both accelerating and regenerative application of the brakes, in
which case the brake forces generated when coasting and when applying
the brakes flow to the high-volt energy storage unit to provide an
increase in electric power. This energy, subsequently available for
further use, need not be generated by the combustion engine and is
therefore available virtually free of charge. Already using this
principle in a similar manner on production cars featuring Brake Energy
Regeneration, BMW is able to ensure efficient energy management and
maintain the battery at a high charge level. On the road, the support
provided by the electric motors in this way, referred to as
"boosting," serves first to give the vehicle incomparable
spontaneity and a direct response; and second, to significantly reduce
fuel consumption. BMW ActiveHybrid comes in where conventional hybrid
drive reaches its limit. Conventional hybrid systems allow efficient
motoring only in relatively small or medium-sized vehicles at
relatively low speeds. This is because most of the power coming from
the combustion engine has to be conveyed most of the time via the
electrical path of the transmission and because of the use of a high
level of electric power. A car with enhanced dynamics, performance and
running speeds would therefore require a larger combustion engine
calling for less efficient, larger and heavier electric motors. In the
power split drive mode, also referred to as the output branched concept,
one of the two electric motors acts as a generator, converting some of
the engine's power into electrical current, subsequently fed to the
battery or the second electric motor. The second electric motor then
converts such power coming from the first electric motor or from the
battery back into mechanical power for the output drive shaft on the
transmission. Two-mode technology varies the balance of electrical and
mechanical energy on the respective paths for optimum efficiency.
Conventional hybrid drive systems do not come with fixed mechanical
transmission ratios, which would serve to optimize fuel consumption.
Instead, to their disadvantage, they use a continuously variable
transmission which actually requires that performance and load feedback
from the car are separated from one another, thus failing to provide a
dynamic driving impression. The two-mode active transmission, by
contrast, overcomes and eliminates the disadvantages of a conventional
hybrid drivetrain. It reduces the share of power flowing through the
electrical branch of the transmission throughout a broad range of
transmission ratios. Through its power split in two transmission modes,
the two-mode active transmission provides the energy of both electric
motors in an ideal form tailored to current driving conditions. BMW
ActiveHybrid: the result of years of research. The principle of the
two-mode active transmission in the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid forms a
significant milestone in BMW's ActiveHybrid strategy, fulfilling the
demands made by a broad range of customers looking for a dynamic,
economical and responsible form of motoring. To reach this goal BMW
pursues a clear-cut "Best of Hybrid" strategy, enabling use
of the optimum components under a modular principle within a wide range
of different vehicle concepts planned for the future. Parallel to the
Global Hybrid Cooperation, the BMW Group has therefore entered into yet
another joint venture with the Mercedes Car Group of Daimler,
developing components for hybrid drive in the luxury performance sedan.
BMW started to develop hybrid drives many years ago, long before the
foundation of the Global Hybrid Cooperation. Indeed, BMW tested the
electric drivetrain as early as in the late 1980s, for example in the
BMW E1. And the BMW Group has been conducting research on hybrid
technology and its various options for more than 15 years, making this
technology and the results already obtained a firm part of the BMW X5
EfficientDynamics development strategy. In the meantime, the BMW Group
has presented several hybrid vehicle concepts, starting with a hybrid
car in 1995 based on the BMW 518i. In particular, the outstanding
potential of this drive technology has been proven in the BMW X5
EfficientDynamics presented in 2003 and the BMW Concept X3
EfficientDynamics shown to the world in 2005. With the introduction of
the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid, BMW is proudly presenting the highest
degree of maturity in hybrid technology seen so far. Indeed, this
technology offers everything it takes to combine extremely efficient
motoring with that Sheer Driving Pleasure so typical of BMW. A clear
sign of the special status of the BMW ActiveHybrid concept is the
presentation of this technology in combination with a brand new type of
vehicle: The BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is the unusually attractive

graphics. The roofline flows down gently to the contour lip at the
rear, finally merging into a slight upward swing perfecting the Coupe
line and at the same time optimizing the vehicle's streamlining. The
rear look of the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is split by horizontal
lines, making the vehicle look wider and emphasizing its road
stability. A muscular bumper and the protective cover for the
underfloor are further classic design elements characteristic of a BMW
X vehicle. And last but not least, the proportions so typical of a
coupe are exhibited here in particular style typical of a BMW X model,
among other elements, through the muscular and elegant shoulders. A
typical BMW also in design. The BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid is clearly
recognizable as a BMW from every angle. All design features clearly
exhibit classic BMW design, with the focus primarily on those
sculptural lines so characteristic of all BMW X models. The front, side
and rear body sections flow smoothly and directly into one another,
with additional highlighting design elements typical of the brand,
ranging from the BMW kidney grill through the dual round headlights with
their cut contour and the powerful contour line at the side all the way
to the horizontal lines at the rear. Following the usual philosophy of
a BMW X vehicle, the wheel arches show slightly square contours
offering space for 21-inch light-alloy wheels in Y-spoke design created
especially for the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid. This is indeed a
brand-new rendition of such three-dimensional rims with the individual
spokes showing recessed surfaces not only at the top, but also further
down towards the inner sections of the wheel. The exterior mirrors on
the BMW Concept X6 ActiveHybrid are likewise brand-new in their
design-a white, shimmering row of lights standing out between the lower
element, finished in body color and the upper section of the mirror cap
made of aluminum. Supplementing the corona rings in the headlights so
typical of BMW, these additional lights also provide a daytime light

also exhibited in the design of the rear lights, where the L-shape so
typical of a BMW X model is re-interpreted in a particularly dynamic,

Since the underfloor protection panel, made of brushed aluminum, both

system-as long as they are not required for their normal purpose. The
