For the second phase of the
model cycle, BMW has refreshed its successful Sports Activity Vehicle
(SAV) BMW and the Sports Activity Coupé (SAC) BMW with a new look,
improved equipment and a range structure which has been optimised for
customers. The redesigned front end and revised rear section lend even
clearer emphasis to the robust off-road look and sporty appearance of
the third-generation BMW X3. Its coupé counterpart, the
second-generation BMW X4, adopts the new front end, adds its own
accentuation with the exclusive BMW mesh kidney grille and offers a
particularly dynamic rear end. The refresh is rounded off with a
modern interior with new equipment features and updated infotainment.
BMW M GmbH is also upgrading the M models of the BMW X3 and BMW X4 at
the same time (see here).

Modern drive technology and a clearer product structure.

The introduction of mild hybrid technology with 48-‑volt‑starter
generator now also with all petrol engines ensures a broad drive
portfolio at the cutting edge of technology. These include the BMW X3
xDrive30e (combined fuel consumption, weighted: 2.6 – 2.0 l/100 km
according to WLTP; combined power consumption, weighted: 20.5 – 18.9
kWh/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO2 emissions,
weighted: 59 – 45 g/km according to WLTP) and, at the top of the
range, particularly high-performance petrol and diesel models from
BMW M GmbH. In Germany, all BMW X3 and BMW X4 are fitted with the
all-wheel drive system BMW xDrive as standard. A new range structure
ensures a greater focus on sportiness and “X-ness” as well as enhanced
clarity through deliberate reduction. The M sports package and the
familiar M variants are available as an alternative to the standard
equipment enriched with high-quality X elements. The market launch
will get underway in summer 2021, following the start of production
at the Spartanburg plant (USA) in August 2021. The new BMW X3 and the
new BMW X4 are due to see their world premiere at the Chengdu Motor
Show in China (27 August to 5 September), while the European premiere
will take place at the IAA in Munich (7 to 12 September).

BMW X3 with classic X elements and sporty genes.

The new BMW X3 has a more modern appearance that conveys a more
powerful presence, with design changes to the front and rear and an
emphasis on classic X‑elements. The BMW kidney grille and headlights
have been redesigned along with the front apron and rear bumper, while
new graphics have been applied to the rear lights. High-quality X
elements such as underbody protection and specific side skirts in the
style of the previous X Line are already standard. The sporty genes
of the Sports Activity Vehicle are underlined by the M sports package
and the BMW X3 M40i (combined fuel consumption: 9.5 – 8.8 l/100 km
according to WLTP; combined CO2‑emissions: 216 – 199 g/km
according to WLTP) and the BMW X3 M40d (combined fuel consumption:
7.3 – 6.6 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined
CO2‑emissions: 192 – 173 g/km according to WLTP).

New BMW kidney grille and flatter
headlights.
With the redesigned BMW kidney grille,
headlights that are around ten millimetres flatter and the new front
apron, the BMW X3 looks almost like a new vehicle. More strikingly
shaped, especially in the upper area, the BMW kidney grille is larger
than before and now comprises a single-piece frame. A black bar in
which the iCam is positioned if fitted ensures visual separation of
the grille. The front headlights feature full LED technology as
standard. In addition to the optional adaptive LED headlights with
Matrix function, where the adverse weather light takes on the function
of the previously separate fog lights, the BMW Laser Light with a
range of up to 650 metres is now also available as an optional extra.

Front apron and rear apron redesigned.

Below the headlights, vertical air intakes arranged in a triangular
interpretation frame the front bumper. In the new front apron, taut
and amply-sized surfaces in body colour and the robust underbody
protection reinforce the presence and high-quality aura of the SAV.
The BMW X3 xDrive30e with plug-in hybrid drive also bears an
“electrified by i” emblem on the front wing, while an additional blue
ring adorns all BMW logos on this engine version, including those on
the wheel hub covers. The rear section of the new BMW X3 offers
greater clarity as a result of various measures. A black border gives
the full LED rear lights a more precise appearance, while the narrower
light graphic now includes a three-dimensionally modelled pincer
contour and horizontal turn signals integrated in filigree style. The
emphasis on horizontal lines, for example in the concave area at the
lower end of the tailgate, contributes to the tidy impression of the
rear. The newly designed and elaborately painted underbody protection
provides a powerful finish to the road. The new, flush-fitting
free-form tailpipe trims are larger and sportier, conveying a more
powerful presence.

M sports package with specific exterior details.

The M sports package gives the BMW X3 a sportier orientation.
The specific front apron features significantly larger air inlets and
inserts finished in high-gloss black, as well as more pronounced air
curtains. The window graphics, roof rails and BMW kidney frame and
bars are optionally available in high-gloss black. The sportier rear
bumper includes a more striking diffuser finished in Dark Shadow along
with two additional side air‑curtain‑panels in high-gloss black. The
standard trim includes the new 19-inch Y‑Spoke 887M alloy wheel in
Midnight Grey Bicolor with 245/50 R19 tyres. Additional wheels in 20
inch and 21 inch are available as an option, as well as the M sports
brake with blue or red brake calipers.

Further M insignia in the M Performance cars.

Further visual differentiation is offered by the BMW X3 M40i and the
BMW X3 M40d, which show their affiliation to the BMW M GmbH portfolio
with a specific BMW M kidney. In addition to a chrome frame, it bears
the typical M double grille bars in high-gloss black and with an
M logo. While the same aprons as in the M sports package are to be
found at the front and rear, the aerodynamically optimised M exterior
mirrors in high-gloss black, the free-form tailpipe trims in black
chrome and the striking “Two Teeth” design ensure a distinctive look.
The BMW X3 M40i and BMW X3 M40d are fitted as standard with 20‑inch M
light alloy wheels double-spoke 699M in Orbit Grey with the mixed
tyres 245/45 R20 at the front and 275/40 R20 at the rear. As an
optional extra, these wheels are available in Jet Black, while other
exclusive options include the 21-inch M light alloy wheels double
spoke 718M in Jet Black burnished.

BMW mesh kidney grille as an exclusive distinguishing feature
of the BMW X4.

The BMW X4 adopts the new front end of the BMW X3, but adds an
exclusive distinguishing feature in the form of the mesh kidney
familiar from other sporty BMW models. Compared to the BMW X3, the
adaptive LED headlights with Matrix function are already standard,
while the BMW Laser Light, which is particularly light-intensive and
has a long range, is also available as an option for the BMW X4.
Featuring flat full LED rear lights that emphasise the vehicle width
and protrude strikingly from the vehicle body in their
three-dimensional design, the rear section now has an even more
clear-cut shape in the BMW X4 revision. The new rear apron has a
tidier appearance, with an increased proportion of painted surface and
reflectors now placed vertically and lower in the bumper. The wide
free-form tailpipe trims echo the horizontal lines of the upper section.

M sports package with striking rear apron in the BMW X4.

From the M sports package onwards, the BMW X4 features the BMW mesh
kidney, the frame and inserts of which are painted in high‑gloss black
on request, as well as a new rear apron with a wide, offset insert in
the shape of an anvil. Like the side air‑curtain‑panels, this is
finished in high-gloss black and gives a powerful overall impression
that is distinctly road-oriented. As with the BMW X3, the M sports
package includes the new 19-inch alloy wheel Y‑-Spoke 887M in Midnight
Grey Bicolor with 245/50 R19 tyres as standard. Additional 20-inch and
21-inch wheels and the M sports brake are available as options.

BMW M insignia for the BMW X4 M40i and BMW X4 M40d.

The BMW X4 M40i (combined fuel consumption: 9.5 – 8.7 l/100 km
according to WLTP; combined CO2‑emissions: 215 – 198 g/km
according to WLTP) and the BMW X4 M40d (combined fuel
consumption: 7.3 – 6.6 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined
CO2‑emissions: 190 – 171 g/km according to WLTP) are based
on the appearance and standard equipment of the corresponding
X3 models and, like these, bear typical BMW M insignia such as
the specific BMW M kidney with chrome frame, double kidney bars in
high‑gloss black and M logo as well as the aerodynamically optimised
M exterior mirrors in high-gloss black. The rear apron with its
anvil-shaped insert is complemented by air curtain trim in high-gloss
black. Analogous to the BMW X3 M40i and BMW X3 M40d are the free-form
tailpipe trims in black chrome with the two "teeth" and the tyres.

Eleven paint finishes for the BMW X3 and one exclusively for the BMW X4.

Following the redesign of the BMW X3, BMW offers a total of eleven
paint finishes in the regular range. The metallic paint finish
Skyscraper Grey (from 12/21) is new, and as is M Brooklyn Grey
metallic from the M sports package upwards, along with the two BMW
Individual paint finishes Aventurine Red and Tanzanite Blue. The new
metallic finish Piedmont Red is available exclusively for the BMW X4.
For the first time there is also a choice of numerous special BMW
Individual paint finishes for the two models, including matt finishes
such as Frozen Deep Grey. The range of special finishes available is
to be further expanded in the future.

Significantly revised interior.

The new BMW X3 and the new BMW X4 adopt the centre console
of the current BMW 4 Series. The free-standing, central Control
Display with touch function now offers a screen diagonal of 10.25
inches as standard in all vehicles. A 12.3-inch version of the touch
display is also available as an option. The significantly improved
standard equipment now also includes sports seats with covers from a
new Sensatec generation in the new Ray grain and with perforated main
seat surfaces, as well as automatic climate control with 3-zone
control. In order to make the vehicle configuration process clearer
and more straightforward for customers, not least reducing the number
of conflicts, the complexity of the equipment lines and optional
extras has deliberately been reduced by 30 per cent. In addition to
the cupholder and a model-specific emblem, the centre console
accommodates the newly designed control island with the gear selector
lever, buttons for the start/stop system, the electric parking brake,
hill descent control and various driving experience functions as well
as the BMW Controller. The engine start button is positioned here,
too. New electroplated trim elements on the air vents add a touch of
elegance while emphasising the horizontal lines in the interior.
Additional functions are offered by the optional extra Ambient Light,
which features contour lighting above the decorative trim in the
dashboard and ambient lighting that shines gently downwards below the
accent trim to create a particularly high-quality, relaxing atmosphere
in the interior.

Hybrid technology for all engines.

The new BMW X3 and the new BMW X4 demonstrate increasing
electrification with modern hybrid technology in connection with
all seven drive systems available in Germany. In addition to the
BMW X3 xDrive30e with plug-in hybrid drive, which has been in
production since December 2019, all 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines
in the two model series now use 48-volt mild hybrid technology.
After the three available diesel engines were converted to the
mild‑hybrid‑system in the course of 2020, the three petrol engines are
now also being fitted with this technology including a
48‑-volt‑starter generator, ensuring even better driving performance
with lower fuel consumption and increased driving comfort. The energy
obtained by means of recuperation and stored in the 48-volt battery
can also be used for an electric boost of 8 kW/11 hp in addition to
supplying the 12‑volt on-board network.

Three diesel and three petrol engines on offer.

Seven drive options are available in Germany for the new BMW X3
and the new BMW X4, covering a power range from 135 kW/184 hp
to 265 kW/360 hp. These include three diesel engines: with
140 kW/190 hp in the BMW X3 xDrive20d (fuel consumption combined:
6.5 – 5.8 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined
CO2‑emissions: 171 – 151 g/km according to WLTP) and the
BMW X4 xDrive20d (combined fuel consumption: 6.5 – 5.7 l/100 km
according to WLTP; combined CO2‑emissions: 170 – 149 g/km
according to WLTP), with 210 kW/286 hp in the BMW X3 xDrive30d
(combined fuel consumption: 7.0 – 6.2 l/100 km according to WLTP;
combined CO2‑emissions: 183 – 162 g/km according to WLTP,)
and the BMW X4 xDrive30d (combined fuel consumption: 7.0 – 6.1 l/100
km according to WLTP; combined CO2‑emissions:
182 – 161 g/km according to WLTP) and with 250 kW/340 hp in the BMW X3
M40d and BMW X4 M40d.

The petrol engine models are the BMW X3 xDrive20i (combined
fuel consumption: 8.4 – 7.6 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined
CO2‑emissions: 192 – 172 g/km according to WLTP) and the
BMW X4 xDrive20i (combined fuel consumption: 8.4 – 7.5 l/100 km
according to WLTP; combined CO2‑emissions: 190 – 170 g/km
according to WLTP) with 135 kW/184 hp, the BMW X3 xDrive30i (combine
fuel consumption: 8.5 – 7.6 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined
CO2‑emissions: 194 – 173 g/km according to WLTP) and the
BMW X4 xDrive30i (combined fuel consumption: 8.5 – 7.5 l/100 km
according to WLTP; combined CO2‑emissions: 192 – 171 g/km
according to WLTP) with 180 kW/245 hp and the BMW X3 M40i and
BMW X4 M40i with 265 kW/360 hp.

Plug-in hybrid with an electric range of up to 50 kilometres.

The BMW X3 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid model is reserved for the Sports
Activity Vehicle. Its system consists of a 4-cylinder petrol engine
combined with an electric motor whose power is transmitted to all four
wheels. Their joint system output of 215 kW/292 hp can be increased by
up to 30 kW/41 hp by temporary use of the electric motor’s peak
output. It has a lithium-ion high-voltage battery that enables a range
of up to 50 kilometres.

8-speed Steptronic transmission and BMW xDrive as standard.

All engine versions are combined with 8-speed Steptronic gearboxes
specifically matched to the respective engine characteristics.
The BMW X3 M40i, BMW X3 M40d and all BMW X4 models feature
the otherwise optional 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission including
paddle shifts and Launch Control as standard. BMW xDrive all-wheel
drive makes a significant contribution to the versatile sporty flair
of the BMW X3 and BMW X4. Its precise electronic control ensures
especially sporty power distribution that is typical of the brand. Its
rear-wheel orientation makes dynamic cornering in particular an
especially intense experience. In addition, BMW xDrive optimises both
driving stability and traction over rough terrain.

Driving Assistant Professional available for the first time.

In refreshing the BMW X3 and BMW X4, BMW has reorganised and
once again significantly expanded the range of modern driver
assistance systems to enhance both comfort and safety. The Driving
Assistant Professional*, available for the first time as an option in
these model series, offers the driver comfortable relief and increased
safety in driving situations where there is a conscious desire for
assistance. In addition to the Driving Assistant, which is also
optional, functions include Active Cruise Control with improved
functionality in the city, junction warning with additional city brake
function, emergency lane assistant and improved steering/lane guidance
assistant. The 3D environment visualisation Assisted View in the
instrument cluster provides an overview of which Driving Assistant
Professional assistance systems are activated and what functions they
offer. Parking Assistant Plus now also includes the reverse assistant,
which helps retrace a completed line in reverse. Another new feature
in the BMW X3 and BMW X4 is the optional BMW Drive Recorder, which
takes videos around the vehicle.

* available first for BMW X3/X4 M40i, M40d

BMW Live Cockpit Plus with 10.25-inch display as standard.

With BMW Live Cockpit Plus as standard and intelligent networking
including innovative digital services based on BMW Operating System 7,
the BMW X3 and BMW X4 now offer particularly close interaction between
driver and vehicle. BMW Live Cockpit Plus includes the iDrive
operating system with a Control Display which is now at least 10.25
inches in size and a Touch Controller, as well as an instrument
cluster in Black Panel look with a 5.1-inch colour display at the
centre. The BMW Live Cockpit Plus can be supplemented by the optional
BMW Head-Up Display. As an optional extra, BMW Live Cockpit
Professional offers a fully digital display network: the
high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and the
Control Display each have a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches.

New generation of navigation with BMW Maps.

One of the most important innovations in the area of digital services
is BMW Maps. The cloud-based system enables significant performance
improvement, a high degree of accuracy and simplified destination
entry. The new-generation navigation system offers extremely fast and
dynamic route calculation based on precise real-time traffic data
delivered at short intervals. In addition, BMW Maps with Connected
Parking provides drivers with even more detailed support in the search
for a vacant parking space near their destination.

Smartphone connectivity and integration of 3rd party services.

BMW Live Cockpit Plus and BMW Live Cockpit Professional offer
optimised. wireless smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay. Here,
the driver can view all the important information from the apps on the
Control Display and also – in intelligently processed form – in the
instrument cluster and the optional BMW Head-Up Display.

With Android Auto™, the BMW Group has added another customer-relevant
service to its range of seamless in-vehicle connectivity, offering
easy and safe use of smartphone functions such as music, media or
messaging apps while driving. Highlights of the interaction between
Android Auto and BMW include convenient and wireless networking
and the intelligent integration of Google MapsTM navigation
instructions in the BMW Head-up Display.

Deep integration of Amazon Alexa makes it possible to use Amazon’s
voice service inside the vehicle in the same way as the customer is
already used to doing at home. With the help of the My BMW app, which
is available in over 40 countries for both iOS and Android operating
systems, Amazon Alexa can be installed in the vehicle in just a few
steps. In addition, the My BMW App is a universal interface to the
vehicle. It offers information on the state of the vehicle at all
times and, depending on the options fitted, enables remote access
functions such as vehicle location, locking and unlocking the doors or
recording the vehicle’s surroundings (Remote 3D View).

Enhanced functionality for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is also constantly gaining
additional capabilities in the BMW X3 and BMW X4, creating an even
more intensive bond between driver and vehicle. With the digital
companion, naturally spoken instructions can now be used to regulate
the air conditioning, open and close the windows or change the driving
experience switch modes, for instance. It can also access the new News
app, which reads out the latest news to passengers, and learn routines
that increase comfort and driving pleasure in certain situations.

Remote Software Upgrade updates “over-the-air”.

Since 2018 and the introduction of BMW Operating System 7, it has
been possible for drivers of BMW models to keep their vehicle
constantly up to date with the latest software status using Remote
Software Upgrade. In the BMW X3 and BMW X4, too, upgrades can include
different content from new services to improved vehicle features and
can be loaded "over‑the-air". Furthermore, intelligent
networking offers the option to integrate additional functions into
the vehicle at a later date. The options that can be retrofitted
digitally include the high beam assistant and BMW Drive Recorder.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

Munich. The unique combination of intelligent
all-wheel drive BMW xDrive and cutting-edge BMW eDrive technology
makes for sustainable driving pleasure in another BMW model. The new
BMW X3 xDrive30e is already the third Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) in
the brand's current model range to feature a plug-in hybrid drive and
power transmission to all four wheels, offering exciting versatility
and a purely electric driving experience as well as outstandingly low
fuel consumption and emissions. Together, the 4-cylinder combustion
engine and the electric motor of the plug-in hybrid model generate a
maximum system output of 215 kW/292 hp. The unique combination of the
intelligent 4-wheel drive system BMW xDrive and state-of-the-art BMW
eDrive technology reduces average fuel consumption to levels between
2.4 and 2.1 litres per 100 kilometres*. The relevant CO2
emissions amount to 54 to 49 grams per kilometre*. The combined power
consumption of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is between 17.2 and 16.4 kWh
per 100 kilometres*. Its lithium-ion high-voltage battery equipped
with the very latest battery cell technology enables purely electric
mobility with a range of 51 to 55 kilometres*.

The new BMW X3 xDrive30e will be produced from December 2019 onwards
at the BMW plant in Spartanburg, USA – alongside the conventionally
powered model variants of the BMW X3. The worldwide market launch is
due to start in spring 2020. In this way, the BMW Group is
consistently pursuing not only the electrification of its drive
portfolio but also a product strategy geared towards the diverse needs
of its customers. The globally popular SAV model in the premium
mid-range segment is the first model of the brand to be offered with
both a conventional combustion engine and a plug-in hybrid system –
with a purely electrically powered model variant due to be added
during the course 2020.

Sports Activity Vehicle with agile handling, superior off-road
performance and outstanding efficiency.

The new BMW X3 xDrive30e combines the typical qualities of a Sports
Activity Vehicle with particularly efficient drive technology. The
plug-in hybrid model is likewise characterised by agile handling and
sporty driving characteristics, robust versatility, a versatile
interior, premium quality and advanced connectivity. Its BMW xDrive
system permanently distributes the drive torque between the front and
rear wheels as required – even when driving purely on electric power –
so as to ensure sporty driving characteristics on the road and
superior off-road performance over unsurfaced terrain. The drive power
is generated by a 2.0-litre, 135 kW/184 hp 4-cylinder petrol engine
with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and an electric motor integrated
into the 8-speed Steptronic transmission with an output of 80 kW/109
hp. Together the two drive units mobilise a system output of 215
kW/292 hp. The maximum system torque of the plug-in hybrid drive is
420 Nm. This allows the new BMW X3 xDrive30e to accelerate from zero
to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds. Its top speed is 210 km/h.

Depending on the operating mode and the situation on the road, the
electric motor of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e can be used either for
purely electric mobility or to support the combustion engine. In MAX
eDrive mode, which can be activated via the eDrive button on the
centre console, the new BMW X3 xDrive30e achieves a top speed of 135
km/h with a locally emissions-free and virtually silent drive unit. In
the standard Auto eDrive setting, purely electric driving is possible
at speeds of up to 110 km/h. The combustion engine only switches on at
higher speeds or when there are particularly high load requirements.
When both drive units are active, the efficiency of the new BMW X3
xDrive30e is optimised, as is its sprint capacity. When accelerating,
the spontaneous power development of the electric motor is clearly
noticeable, while at constant speeds its electric assist reduces fuel
consumption and emissions. The support of the electric motor ensures
that the combustion engine can run within an efficiency-optimised load
range as often as possible. The likewise available BATTERY CONTROL
setting serves to keep the charge state of the high-voltage battery at
a level determined by the driver. In this way, the power supply can be
specifically reserved and used for local emissions-free driving on
urban stretches of road during a lengthier trip.

High-voltage battery based on the very latest battery cell
technology for maximum efficiency; large, variable luggage compartment.

The lithium-ion battery of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is located in a
space-saving position underneath the rear seat, while the fuel tank is
positioned above the rear axle. This means that the transport capacity
of the plug-in hybrid model is only slightly restricted. At 450
litres, the luggage compartment volume of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is
on a par with those models which have a conventional engine. By
folding down the rear seat with 40 : 20: 40 split, the storage space
can be extended to up to 1 500 litres. Thanks to cutting-edge battery
cell technology and a gross energy content of 12.0 kWh, the
high-voltage battery contributes both to the outstanding efficiency
and the excellent electrical range of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e. As a
result, the plug-in hybrid model can be used for a great deal of
day-to-day travel without locally produced emissions – even beyond the city.

The high-voltage battery can be charged at conventional household
sockets using the standard-equipment charging cable. In this way, the
battery can be fully charged in less than six hours. At a BMW i
Wallbox, the same charging process can be completed in around three
and a half hours. The charging socket is located under a separate flap
on the front left side wall of the car. The electrical energy stored
in the high-voltage battery is also used to supply the 12-volt vehicle
electrical system.

Electric licence plate and tax benefit thanks to the
considerable electrical range.

Thanks to its high electrical range the new BMW X3 xDrive30e fulfils
the criteria laid down in the German Electric Mobility Act – depending
on fittings – for classification as an e-vehicle, complete with
special rights on public roads. It is also subject to reduced company
car taxation in Germany. Only half the gross list price is used as a
basis when calculating the monetary benefit from private use of the
company car.

As an alternative to the basic version, the new BMW X3 xDrive 30e
also comes in the model variants Advantage, xLine, Luxury and M Sport.
Its standard equipment includes acoustic pedestrian protection. When
driving electrically at low speeds, an unmistakeable sound designed
specifically for electrified BMW models is generated to alert other
road users to the approaching car without impairing the acoustic
comfort of the vehicle occupants. In addition, the new BMW X3
xDrive30e is equipped with an auxiliary air conditioning system as
standard. It can also be controlled remotely from a smartphone using
the BMW Connected App: the driver can therefore get into a warm
vehicle in winter and a pleasantly cool vehicle in summer. New digital
services help make it more attractive and convenient to charge the
high-voltage battery when out and about. The digital services support
the driver in searching for and selecting public charging stations,
enable the charging process to be controlled via remote functions and
transmit information relating to charge status, electrical and
combined range and individual energy consumption to the driver’s
smartphone or other personal devices.

In addition, almost the entire range of optional equipment available
for the conventionally powered versions of the BMW X3 is also
available for the plug-in hybrid model – thereby increasing driving
pleasure, comfort and individual style. This range includes an
Adaptive Suspension, a Variable Sports Steering and a M Sport Brake
System, the BMW Head-Up Display, Active Cruise Control with Stop &
Go function, Driving Assistant Plus with steering and lane guidance
assistant and also Parking Assistant Plus. Another feature included in
this range of extras is a tow hitch that can be electrically swivelled
out and in. The maximum towing capacity of the new BMW X3 xDrive30e is
2,000 kilograms.

New BMW X3 xDrive30e has a smaller overall CO2 footprint.

The “real” environmental impact of plug-in hybrid vehicles has been
questioned on occasion, especially in markets where the proportion of
green energy used by the public energy grid remains small. The BMW
Group conducted a full-cycle CO2 certification for the new
BMW X3 xDrive30e – from raw material procurement, the supply chain,
production and the use phase, all the way to recycling.

This revealed the CO2 footprint of the new BMW X3
xDrive30e to be 26 per cent smaller than that of the new BMW X3
xDrive30i when running on average European power in the use phase.
When charging the car with green energy, its CO2 footprint
is reduced by as much as 54 per cent.

BMW plug-in hybrid models offer an array of benefits in
everyday use.

BMW’s plug-in hybrid drive systems already offer users a host of
additional benefits over traditional solutions:

Money-saving: Electric driving in urban areas is cheaper than
using petrol or diesel if the plug-in hybrid vehicle is charged at
home or at the workplace at low cost.

Interior always at the right temperature, even before you get in:
auxiliary heating and auxiliary air conditioning are fitted as standard.

Braking is winning: The battery is charged under braking. In
conventional vehicles, braking generates only heat and brake dust.

The best of both worlds: Plug-in hybrids provide electric driving
pleasure in urban areas and classical BMW driving pleasure over
longer distances.

Smoothing the way into the future: Because a plug-in hybrid can
run emission-free, it is eligible to enter many low-emission zones,
enjoys extra parking privileges and saves on toll charges.

Better quality of life in cities: By driving on electric power,
users can actively contribute to reducing emissions and traffic
noise in cities.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

Spartanburg/ Munich. BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in
the US state of South Carolina has doubled its capacity for production
of high-voltage batteries. The plant’s own battery facility now
produces the new fourth-generation batteries. These are intended for
the plug-in hybrid models of the new BMW X5 and the future BMW X3,
also produced in Spartanburg.

“We have invested around ten million US
dollars in a new battery assembly line and expanded the area to more
than 8,000 square metres. This means we could double the number of
batteries produced if needed to meet market demand,” explains Michael
Nikolaides, Senior Vice President Engines and Electrified Drivetrains,
BMW Group.

The new assembly line will be able to produce different types of
fourth-generation batteries to serve the growing range of electrified
vehicles locally. These batteries are based on a new technology
concept that further enhances their performance.

More than 120 people will be employed in battery production at Plant
Spartanburg by the end of the year, having completed a comprehensive
training programme to acquire the technological know-how needed for
battery production.

“We have produced batteries on site at
Plant Spartanburg since 2015 – making the BMW Group a pioneer for
electromobility in the US,” says Knudt Flor, President and CEO, BMW
Manufacturing, Co., LLC. In the past four years, the plant’s battery
assembly team has produced a total of more than 45,000 batteries.

Further investment in production of BMW X5 and BMW X3 plug-in hybrids

Between 2015 and 2018, BMW Group Plant Spartanburg built the first
series produced plug-in hybrid vehicle, the BMW X5 xDrive40e (combined
fuel consumption: 3,3 l/100km; combined power consumption: 15,3
kWh/100km ; combined CO2-emission: 77 g/km), for the core BMW brand.
The start of production for the new BMW X5 xDrive45e (combined fuel
consumption: 2,0-1,7 l/100km*; combined power consumption: 23,5-20,3
kWh/100km*; combined CO2-emission: 47-39 g/km*) will be in August
2019; production of the BMW X3 xDrive30e (combined fuel consumption:
from 2,4 l/100 km*; combined power consumption: from 22,7 kWh/100 km*;
combined CO2-emission: from 56 g/km*; provisional figures) will get
underway in December.

“The BMW X5 and BMW X3 are currently among the top-selling BMW models
in the US. We expect their plug-in hybrid variants to be just as
popular with customers,” adds Flor.

Since the start of the year, the BMW Group has invested a further ten
million US dollars in production of plug-in hybrid models. An
additional 225 vehicle assembly workers received training in the
production of electrified vehicles, adding to the Plant’s already
skilled staff.

International production network for batteries

The BMW Group currently has three battery facilities: at the
Competence Centre for E-drive Production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing
in Germany, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the US and at Plant
Powertrain of its joint venture, BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA). The
BMW Group also produces batteries for local car production in
cooperation with a partner in Thailand. The BMW Group’s battery
research and pilot plant are located in Munich.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

Munich/Arjeplog. Driving dynamic and reliability are
just two of the major characteristics of any BMW automobile. To ensure
that a BMW functions in all conditions and that the customer is able
to enjoy unrestricted access to that brand-typical “driving pleasure”
at any time, BMW invests a great deal of time and know-how in both the
construction and the testing of new automobiles. Long before a new
model series arrives on the market, it will have had to withstand
possibly the most severe endurance tests. This includes, for example,
testing under extreme climatic conditions such as those prevailing in
scorching hot deserts or freezing cold winter landscapes.

Fine tuning for optimal safety and maximum driving
enjoyment.
Moreover, the extensive ice surfaces of
frozen lakes and the numerous remote roads with their firmly packed
layers of snow offer excellent conditions for fine tuning of the
settings activated via the Driving Experience Control function – and
hence for the application of maximum driving pleasure and best
possible driving safety. As a result, engineers are in a position to
sense the vehicle’s dynamic behaviour much more accurately and
synchronize the control of driver assistant systems such as Dynamic
Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) even more
precisely and to attune it to the vehicle as a whole. It is this
painstaking development work that later provides the customer with a
competently tuned chassis for that typical BMW driving pleasure.

Ideal preconditions for testing the BMW X3 in the polar
region.
Within the framework of the final winter trials,
a BMW testing team completed a fastidious testing programme in wintery
North Sweden. In the landscape around the small town of Arjeplog,
pre-series models of the new BMW X3 had to prove that they are also
able to withstand cold, ice and snow. Located in the historic province
of Lapland barely 56 kilometres south of the polar circle, Arjeplog
offers the ideal conditions for this. An abundant amount of snow and
temperatures of minus 20 degrees and below cause the many lakes in the
surrounding area to freeze over. The resulting vast, even surfaces
serve as proving grounds on which steering, suspension and drive
characteristics can be meticulously tested and various different
technical solutions compared against one another. In the process, the
intelligent four-wheel technology xDrive is able to demonstrate its
advantages by not only ensuring best possible traction on icy surfaces
but, thanks to fully variable distribution of torque, also by
optimizing handling agility, this in turn resulting in enhanced
driving dynamics and active driving safety.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,X3,G01,Product,BMW

boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment
it first entered 30 years ago. Around one in three BMW cars sold
around the world is now equipped with the intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel-drive system. BMW’s success in this segment has been driven
not only by the ever-popular BMW X models but also by all-wheel-drive
models based on the other model series, from the BMW 1 Series to the
BMW 7 Series. Across these model series, a large choice of AWD models
is offered in a wide range of engine versions. At the same time, BMW
continues to refine this technology and take it in new directions. By
offering BMW xDrive in combination with a hybrid drive and with a
front-wheel-drive platform, the company has repeatedly demonstrated
its proficiency in the all-wheel-drive field, proficiency that will
secure BMW’s position at the forefront of this sector well into the
future. Today, BMW offers more than 110 models – of either
transmission type – with BMW xDrive in 12 different model series, as
well as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car and the compact BMW 225xe
with electrified all-wheel drive.

The focus from day one: traction and dynamics.

BMW’s first foray into the all-wheel-drive market came
with the unveiling of the BMW 325i “Allrad” at the Frankfurt Motor
Show (IAA) in 1985. From the outside, the newcomer didn’t immediately
reveal its inner qualities, so its performance when the journalists
took it out on the test track was even more of an eye-opener. This
very first BMW all-wheel-drive system not only improved traction away
from surfaced roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also made
for more dynamic handling through corners. “The new BMW is the new
champion when it comes to handling,” was the verdict of the testers
from German car magazine Auto Zeitung not long after the first unveiling.

Today, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system takes
typical BMW driving dynamics to new levels. The current generation of
this system is controlled by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM)
system, which ensures that xDrive always responds appropriately at the
earliest possible moment, based on reliable sensing and monitoring of
the current driving situation. The interventions may be performed
either entirely by BMW xDrive, or by xDrive in combination with
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Performance Control (DPC).
The resulting fast and precise control of drive power distribution
ensures typical BMW handling characteristics even under extremely
dynamic cornering.

The all-wheel-drive system is biased towards the typical BMW
rear-wheel-drive characteristics. That is to say, on the
all-wheel-drive models a greater share of the drive power is sent to
the rear wheels, even under normal driving conditions. This maintains
the typical BMW precise steering response, with virtually no torque
steer. For crisp turn-in and high tracking stability, the
latest-generation BMW xDrive system starts increasing the amount of
power sent to the rear wheels as soon as the vehicle enters a corner,
further enhancing the driving pleasure for which BMW is a byword.

BMW all-wheel-drive technology: continuous evolution since 1985.
The full-time all-wheel-drive system featured on the BMW 325i
“Allrad” of 1985 split the drive power in a ratio of 37 to 63 per cent
between the front and rear wheels. In response to wheel speed
differences, visco locks in the transfer case and rear differential
were capable of providing a virtually rigid connection between the
front and rear wheels, in order to improve traction and stability.
This model’s name was soon changed to BMW 325iX, and from 1988 it was
offered in a “touring” version as well (lower-case spelling up to and
including the E46 series).

1991: BMW 525iX.
Three years on, BMW introduced an all-wheel-drive model in the
BMW 5 Series too. For the first time, the power split was now
electronically controlled. The newly developed system featured
multi-plate clutches that allowed the default 36:64 front-to-rear
power split to be varied seamlessly and automatically in line with
driving conditions. Initially a hydraulically controlled multi-plate
clutch was used at the rear axle, but this was later replaced by
electronically controlled selective braking intervention. The system
monitored the driving situation using wheel speed signals from the
Anti-lock Braking System, supplemented by further information about
brake status, engine speed and throttle valve position.

From the outset the all-wheel-drive system of the BMW 525iX was a
class apart. The electronic control system delivered a very fast and
precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics
even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In
the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered
in both Sedan and touring versions.

1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.
In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle
concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first
Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving
dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the
time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in
this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of
38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic
control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X
(Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured
the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle
challenging conditions off the beaten track.

In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept,
there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at
BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s
all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation
of the BMW 3 Series.

2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.
Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up
the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle
segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered
even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only
premium model in its class for years to come.

The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was
introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon
extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely
fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive
worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to
continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving
situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the
electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability
Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position
and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s
first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike
conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least
one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of
oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively
corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.

In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent
all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on
the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring
models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced
in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold
worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its
second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.

2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid
drive.
With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly
established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to
present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the
Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical
dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For
the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined
with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power
split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled
agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on
overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further
perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile,
in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its
range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive
system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6
M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the
all-wheel-drive market.

2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many
years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of
its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also
combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes
the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing
engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and
taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.

BMW xDrive also available for other model series.
The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by
an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW
model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision,
BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal
combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time
before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7
Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive
Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6
Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5
Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe
models of the new BMW 4 Series.

Driving progress ever forward.
BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with
the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers
a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and
contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is
available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW
also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second
generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW
xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This
was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined
its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new
front-wheel-drive format.

With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step
in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system.
This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in
hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving
the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the
front wheels.

Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.
BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances
that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was
followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in
hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to
full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics
technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and
effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent
hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal
combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all
times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The
drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the
full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.
In September 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series
makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This high-end
BMW luxury model pioneers groundbreaking innovations on all fronts,
and will be available with BMW xDrive from its market launch in
October. The new luxury sedan will also be the first model to allow
intelligent all-wheel-drive to be combined with Integral Active
Steering – that is to say with passively steering rear wheels.

boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment
it first entered 30 years ago.

Munich. Thanks to its segment-leading dynamic handling
and versatility, the new BMW X3 has emerged as a highly successful
model in the international car markets within a matter of months. The
fact that it also assumes an exemplary role on the safety front has
now been confirmed by Europe’s leading crash test programme. In
the latest Euro NCAP crash test, the BMW X3 achieved the highest
rating of 5 stars. The second-generation Sports Activity Vehicle
earned its top marks in this challenging test for new vehicles thanks
to its comprehensive range of standard safety equipment and effective
occupant protection in various types of collision.

Achieving the best rating in the Euro NCAP crash test is proof of the
very high level of the safety concept developed for the BMW X models.
The new BMW X3 boasts an extremely stable body structure, and the
forces exerted on the vehicle in a collision are deflected along
precisely defined load paths and absorbed by generous deformation
zones. Consequently, the passenger cell fulfils its function as a
survival space even in serious collisions. Standard safety equipment
inside the new BMW X3 includes front, side and curtain head airbags
that protect both the driver and the passengers from injury. Also
standard are belt latch tensioners and belt force limiters for the
front seats and ISOFIX systems in the rear for attaching child seats,
as well as the option of deactivating the front passenger airbag. The
restraint systems are controlled by the central safety electronics,
which take into account the type and severity of an accident to
trigger the most effective protective features in each case.

In their evaluation of the crash test results, the assessors
concluded that the new BMW X3 provides a high degree of occupant
safety in all seats. Its stable passenger cell provides comprehensive
injury protection in a front-end collision for both the driver and the
passengers, regardless of a person’s size and the position of
their seat. Here the Sports Activity Vehicle was awarded outstanding
ratings for the protection of children aged around three years or 18
months in the relevant-sized child seats. For its side impact
protection, the BMW X3 likewise achieved the maximum available points.

The new BMW X3 earned an outstanding rating for its active safety
features as well. The Sports Activity Vehicle comes as standard with
the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC), which is linked to BMW
xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive. Thanks to its wide-ranging
functions, including Braking Assistant, Cornering Brake Control and
the traction mode DTC (Dynamic Traction Control), Dynamic Stability
Control ensures easily controllable and secure handling even in
challenging driving situations. Further standard features on the BMW
X3 include a Tyre Defect Indicator that warns the driver in good time
of a loss of pressure in any individual wheel.

The test procedure of the NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) ranks
as one of the most rigorous tests worldwide to which new vehicles are
subjected. The Euro NCAP test is a benchmark for crash safety
recognised throughout Europe by governments, automobile clubs and
consumer associations. The test profile includes, among other aspects,
a frontal collision, a side-on crash and a side impact against a steel
post. Since 2009, electronic safety features have also been taken into
account, along with additional injury risks in a wide range of collisions.

Last year the Munich premium automobile manufacturer was
distinguished by the safety testing institute Euro NCAP (European New
Car Assessment Programme) with a special award for the BMW Assist
Advanced eCall, the advanced emergency call system with automatic
localisation and accident severity detection which is also available
for the BMW X3.

At 31 December 2010, the BMW Group had a workforce of approximately
95,500 employees.

Munich. From its inception, the new BMW X3 has
occupied the top slot among the competition by virtue of its
compelling driving pleasure, convincing versatility and commanding
presence anchored in high-calibre design and no-compromise premium
quality. Now this successful Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) is about to
extend its lead even further on the efficiency front. Autumn 2011 will
see additions to the model range in the shape of the BMW
X3 xDrive20i and the BMW X3 xDrive35d. All-new engines
featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology endow both models with a
further optimised performance to fuel consumption ratio. Added to
which, the BMW X3 exudes even more appeal thanks to a fine-tuned range
of standard equipment and special options.

From autumn 2011, the new BMW X3 will come with a choice of three
petrol engines and three diesel units spanning an output range of
135 kW/184 hp to 230 kW/313 hp. An exceptionally
diverse portfolio of power units thus joins forces with the
SAV’s outstanding agility – with intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel drive as standard – and enhanced ride comfort. Thanks
to a comprehensive range of BMW EfficientDynamics technology,
including the Auto Start-Stop function that can be combined with both
the six-speed manual and the eight-speed automatic transmission, the
BMW X3 also achieves top ratings in its segment for fuel consumption
and CO2 emissions.

BMW X3 xDrive20i: lively power curve and optimised efficiency
courtesy of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.

In autumn 2011 the BMW X3 Drive20i will be available as the new
entry-level model among the petrol variants. Its newly developed
2.0-litre four-cylinder unit blends a hallmark BMW sporty power curve
with exceptionally high efficiency. The new engine’s BMW
TwinPower Turbo technology includes a turbocharging system based on
the twin-scroll principle, along with High Precision Injection direct
petrol injection, Double-Vanos variable camshaft control and
VALVETRONIC variable valve control. Here the new powerplant takes its
lead from the technology package of the 225 kW/306 hp
multi-award-winning six-in-line unit of the BMW X3 xDrive35i.

Thanks to the use of aluminium, the powerplant of the BMW
X3 xDrive20i is particularly light in weight and reaches its peak
output of 135 kW/184 hp at 4,800 rpm. Maximum torque of 270 Newton
metres is already available at 1,250 rpm. The new BMW
X3 xDrive20i features a six-speed manual gearbox as standard with
the option of an eight-speed automatic transmission. In both versions,
the standard range of BMW EfficientDynamics technology includes, among
other features, the Auto Start-Stop function, which automatically
switches the engine off when the car is stationary at traffic lights
or in congestion in order to avoid unnecessary fuel consumption when idling.

Top athlete with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology: new six-cylinder
diesel in the BMW X3 xDrive35d.

A new edition of the world’s sportiest six-cylinder diesel
engine will deliver a particularly enthralling experience of driving
pleasure in the new BMW X3 xDrive35d from autumn 2011. The
3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo
technology drums up peak output of 230 kW/313 hp, reached at
4,400 rpm, making the BMW X3 xDrive35d the most powerful variant
in the SAV’s model range. With maximum torque of 630 Newton
metres on tap from as low as 1,500 to 2,500 rpm, the new diesel engine
also ensures impressive pulling power.

The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology of the new all-aluminium unit
comprises further advanced two-stage turbocharging (Variable Twin
Turbo) and latest-generation common-rail direct injection. At low
engine speeds the small turbocharger is deployed. The air it
compresses is first fed past the larger turbocharger to the combustion
chambers, ensuring lossless development of charge pressure. During
heavier throttle application, an electronic controller of the bypass
unit engages the larger turbocharger. Extremely spontaneous response
is thus ensured by a power curve to match the relevant requirement.
The injection system features precision solenoid injectors and maximum
pressure of 1,800 bar to guarantee particularly efficient and clean
combustion. The BMW X3 xDrive35d comes equipped as standard with
the eight-speed automatic transmission including Auto Start-Stop.

Greater variety in the equipment range too: the BMW X3 continues
along its path of success.

Thanks to its extended range of engines, the new BMW X3 now offers an
unprecedented blend of superior driving characteristics and exemplary
efficiency. It also scores with its versatile luggage compartment,
providing as it does between 550 and 1,600 litres of space, as well as
extremely high-quality and innovative equipment features. The new BMW
X3 is the only model in its class, for example, to offer the option of
a Head-Up Display and in-car internet access.

For autumn 2011, an already diverse range of standard equipment and
special options will be further boosted by a number of specific
enhancements. The convenience of the Auto Hold function, for example,
will be augmented by the automatic release of the electromechanical
parking brake. The range of mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive
will likewise be extended. In conjunction with a navigation system,
the Real-Time Traffic Information function will also be available for
the new BMW X3 from autumn 2011. This innovative system provides
particularly accurate and up-to-the-minute congestion alerts as well
as information on the traffic situation on motorways, country roads
and selected city routes. It allows the driver to take into account
any potential loss of time resulting from a diversion when
recalculating the route. As an added option on the interior design
front, the trim elements on the instrument panel can now also be
specified in High-gloss Black.

With its new engines and enhanced equipment range, the BMW X3 has the
perfect prerequisites to perpetuate its success story. The
extraordinary popularity of the SAV model is expressed not only in
consistently strong demand, but also through positive feedback from
recent reader surveys. In the poll for the “Four-Wheel-Drive Car
of the Year 2011” conducted by car magazine Auto Bild Allrad,
the new BMW X3 won from the word go. And that wasn’t long after
readers of Off Road magazine had voted the Sports Activity Vehicle
“Off-Roader of the Year 2011”.

Munich
. Amidst an impressive start on the international
automotive markets, the new BMW X3 has rapidly become the shooting
star in its segment. Winning the title of “Four-Wheel Drive Car
of the Year 2011” awarded by the specialist car magazine
“Auto Bild Allrad” is current proof of the new BMW
X3’s exceptionally high degree of popularity. The success in the
reader survey conducted by Europe’s biggest-selling specialist
journal for four-wheel drive cars is already the BMW X3’s second
title victory this year. Only a few weeks ago, readers of the magazine
“Off Road” voted the Sports Activity Vehicle
“Off-road Vehicle of the Year 2011”. With this double
success, the new BMW X3 is quick in following the traces of its
predecessor, which, in 2006 and 2007, was able to secure the
readers’ vote of both periodicals twice in succession.

For the eleventh time now, readers of “Auto Bild Allrad”
were asked to name their favourite models from those available on the
German car market. In nine categories, there were more than 130
four-wheel drive vehicles to choose from. The new BMW X3 promptly
secured first place in the category “Off-road vehicles and SUVs
ranging from 25,000 to 40,000 Euros”. The associated title of
“Four-Wheel Drive Car of the Year 2011” was awarded during
a festive ceremony in Frankfurt on 24 March 2011.

With a captivating design, a unique combination of sportiness and
efficiency as well as the largest and most variable luggage
compartment in the competitive environment, the BMW X3, which has been
on sale in Germany since November 2010, yet again sets standards in
driving pleasure, versatility and premium quality. Compared to the
predecessor model, with which BMW established the concept of the
Sports Activity Vehicle in this segment, it offers a noticeable
increase in space, even more efficient engines, optimum motoring
comfort and a widened choice of innovative equipment features. Both at
the front and at the rear the new BMW X3 convinces through outstanding
travel comfort and a high-class ambience. With a 550-litre loading
capacity, which can be increased to 1,600 litres, and 40:20:40
split-folding rear seats, the vehicle’s carrying capacities also
set new benchmarks for the segment.

In the spring of 2011, the engine portfolio for the new BMW X3 will
comprise two petrol engines and two diesel engines with a power output
ranging from 135 kW/184 bhp to 225 kW/306 bhp. Depending on the engine
variant, the new BMW X3 features an eight-speed automatic transmission
either as standard or as an option. The still unique, intelligent
four-wheel drive system xDrive has been optimised even further.
Electronically controlled power distribution ensures not only supreme
traction and maximum road stability on slippery surfaces, but also
superior dynamics on the road, thus providing that unmistakable
driving pleasure that is so typical of BMW. Moreover, the new BMW X3
shoots way ahead of competition thanks to an extensive choice of
innovative equipment features, driving assistance systems and mobility
services from BMW ConnectedDrive. For example, the new BMW X3 is the
only model in its class to be optionally fitted with a Head-Up Display
and offer in-car Internet access.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Concept Vehicles & Design,Press Release,X3,Product,BMW

Winning threesome: BMW 5 Series Touring, BMW 6 Series Convertible and BMW X3.</pp:summary>

Munich. The red dot awards have once again recognised
the high standards of BMW Group Design in 2011. This year BMW sees a
trio of models honoured at the internationally renowned awards: the
BMW 5 Series Touring, BMW 6 Series Convertible and BMW X3. Indeed, the
new BMW 5 Series Touring secured the special “red dot: best of
the best” prize for top design quality in the
“Automobiles, transport and caravans” category. The new
BMW 6 Series Convertible was awarded the red dot for outstanding
design, and the international panel of experts presiding over the red
dot awards 2011 selected the BMW X3 for an honourable mention. The
presentation ceremony will take place on 4 July 2011 at the Award Gala
in the Aalto Theatre in Essen, with more than 1,200 guests from around
the world attending the festivities.

The red dot award is among the world’s leading honours for
product design. It was first conferred in 1955 and recognises
outstanding design achievements in a wide range of categories covering
not only cars, architecture, household and consumer electronics, but
also fashion, life sciences and medicine. When judging the submitted
products, the jury of international design experts based their
appraisals on a variety of criteria ranging from degree of innovation
to functionality, all the way to the product’s environmental credentials.

The ultimate seal of quality conferred in the red dot awards –
the “best of the best” – honours exceptionally
high-level as well as pioneering design. It was bestowed on the
BMW 5 Series Touring in recognition of a car whose
characteristic design features are above all reflected in its highly
individual proportions and surface design – an individuality
that creates a dynamic and powerful look. Its long bonnet, short
overhangs, longest wheelbase in its segment, stretched lines in side
view and dynamically sloping roofline lend the new BMW 5 Series
Touring a harmony and elegance that is unmatched among its
competitors. “We are very happy to have demonstrated through the
BMW 5 Series Touring that functionality can be translated into
appealing design. In this way, BMW blends outstanding functionality
with a particularly modern and emotional aesthetic,” said Adrian
van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design.

In the new BMW 6 Series Convertible, the typical
proportions of a BMW open-top model – the stretched bonnet,
set-back passenger cell, long wheelbase and flat waistline – are
combined with a classic soft top in characteristic “fin”
design. Powerfully contoured surfaces and the forward-surging dynamic
of its lines leave no doubt as to its supreme driving properties. The
luxurious ambience inside the cabin includes the driver-oriented
cockpit that is a hallmark brand feature, while also imparting an
exclusive sense of cosseted security to the front and rear passengers.
Nowhere is the high-level functionality of the interior underscored
more strikingly than by the newly designed freestanding Control
Display of the standard-fitted iDrive operating system.

The body design of the new BMW X3, which was awarded
a red dot honourable mention, radiates urbane elegance and
multifaceted agility. The combination of a flat front end with a
raised rear end creates a dynamic wedge shape when viewed from the
side, clearly alluding to its sporting credentials. The concave and
convex bodywork contours are structured with striking lines. The
interior of the new BMW X3 boasts a generous and flexible spatial
concept, high-grade materials and a characteristically
three-dimensional surface design to ensure a modern, premium ambience
coupled with intelligent functionality.

The unique quality of BMW Group Design is anchored in a cross-brand
philosophy that allows the meticulous exploration of the character of
each brand and model with a view to accurately reflecting these
individual attributes in the design of the relevant vehicle. The
result is automobiles that take hallmark brand design cues and lend
them an individual interpretation to create a look which convincingly
expresses the salient characteristics of each model. The resulting
design quality extends across all vehicle segments to produce unique,
unmistakable and fascinating products.

The outstanding quality of BMW Group Design has been repeatedly
recognised by the red dot awards in recent years. In 2010 the BMW
Group scooped up eleven red dots, while in 2009 it was a total of
seven. Among the seven BMW Group submissions honoured in 2008, two
also received the special “best of the best” distinction:
the BMW 3 Series Convertible and the BMW G 450 X motorcycle. With this
highest of red dot award accolades in 2011, the BMW 5 Series Touring
continues its success story following the prestigious iF Gold Award
already conferred on it this year.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Concept Vehicles & Design,Press Release,X3,Convertible,Touring,Product,BMW

Munich. Only weeks after its market launch it has
already been hailed “Off-Roader of the Year”. The new BMW
X3 has made an instant and lasting impression on fans of
all-wheel-drive vehicles: readers of Germany’s Off Road magazine
voted it their favourite in the “SUV” category. This
accolade sees the new BMW X3 following in the tyre tracks of its
predecessor model, which was voted “Off-Roader of the
Year” twice in succession – in 2006 and 2007. The latest
Off Road reader poll also conferred outstanding rankings on two other
BMW X models: the BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupé was runner-up in
the “Crossover” category while the new BMW X5 came third
among the “Luxury Off-Roaders”.

This triple success for the family of BMW X models is further proof
of just how attractive and popular a vehicle concept it is. Its
triumphal career began in 1999 with the unveiling of the
first-generation BMW X5, with which BMW called into being the Sports
Activity Vehicle segment. This was soon followed by both the first BMW
X3 and the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system. Its
electronically controlled drive distribution not only made for
surefooted traction and maximum stability on slippery surfaces, but
superior dynamics on the road as well, creating a unique rendition of
hallmark BMW driving pleasure. With the BMW X6 and the BMW X1, this
concept found its way into further vehicle segments. Both models
remain unrivalled in the competitive field of premium automobiles.

By contrast, the new BMW X3 joins a segment that is already inhabited
by other premium carmakers as well. Thanks to its systematically honed
qualities, however, the BMW X3 once again sets benchmarks within that
category – a fact reflected in its being voted “Off-Roader
of the Year”. The engines available for this Sports Activity
Vehicle deliver superior performance and, thanks to BMW
EfficientDynamics, exemplarily low fuel consumption and emission
figures as well. In spring 2011 the engine portfolio comprises two
petrol and two diesel engines with output ranging from
135 kW/184 hp to 225 kW/306 hp. Depending on the
choice of engine, the new BMW X3 features an eight-speed automatic
transmission either as standard or as an option. All-new suspension
technology brings with it a palpable improvement in agility and ride
comfort compared with the predecessor model.

With luggage capacity that can be extended from 550 to
1, 600 litres and a folding,
40 : 20 : 40-split rear seat backrest the new BMW
X3 boasts the greatest available space and flexibility in its segment.
It also comes with a choice of innovative equipment features, driver
assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive that
is unique among the competition. As an example, the new BMW X3 is the
only model in its class that has the option of a Head-Up Display and
allows for in-car internet use.

The vote for “Off-Roader of the Year” ranks among the
most important and traditional reader polls in Germany. Going back as
far as 1982, readers of Off Road magazine have been invited annually
to choose their favourite all-wheel-drive vehicles on the German car
market. This year the selection was made from a line-up of 101 models
in eight categories.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,X3,Pricing,Product,BMW

For the first time, BMW is offering comprehensive product
literature as an iPad application

Munich
. The application containing all the product
information on the new BMW X3 has been available in the App Store
since the beginning of December 2010, offering the chance to
experience the vehicle via iPad.

The application combines the advantages of the classic product
catalogue, the website and the interactive possibilities of the iPad.

The BMW X3 App not only provides plenty of information and video
material, but also gives users the chance to configure their ideal
vehicle individually and to order product literature by operating
the touchscreen. The highlights of the application also include an
interactive 360° view.

Customers can also contact BMW directly using an integrated form
if they wish to arrange test drives.

Using the iPad's direct links to social media channels such as
Facebook, users can post information about the vehicle on their
own wall or send their ideal vehicle to friends.

With this application, BMW is examining, for the first time, the
possibilities that the iPad offers in terms of sales promotion
measures and creating a platform for the communication of further
vehicle and product literature.

The iPad application is available free of charge at http://itunes.apple.com/app/bmw-x3/id404814453.

The BMW Magazine on the iPad

The BMW Magazine is already available as an iPad application.
This opens up a comprehensive multimedia brand experience to
readers, above and beyond the printed version. Photo series,
videos and sound files integrated into the layout along with a
Find the Pair game offer clear added value over the print
magazine. The editorial highlight of the second BMW Magazine iPad
App is the Art Car designed by Jeff Koons, which takes on
completely new interactive dimensions on the iPad. The artist's
design has been processed for the App in such a way that the
reader can use the touchscreen to paint the BMW – which is
initially a pristine white – in Koons' brightly coloured style.

Munich. Next year, BMW is offering amateur sportsmen
and women from throughout Europe a unique stage to demonstrate their
versatility, skill and ability to work in a team. Sixty teams, each
consisting of three members, will go head to head in six challenging
disciplines at the BMW X3 Games. Sailing, mountain biking, skiing,
golf, running and driving are in store for the international
competitors when they test themselves from 27th April to 1st May 2011
in Geneva (CH). The teams must also successfully complete a creative
task. The winning team can look forward to a sporting all-rounder:
each team member will receive a new BMW X3.

“The BMW X3 Games are aimed at amateur sportsmen and women from
all age groups,” says Ralf Hussmann, Head of BMW Sports
Marketing and Brand Cooperation. “Each competitor can bring
their own personal strengths to this multi-sport event, thus working
with team-mates to achieve the big goal. However, the BMW X3 Games are
about more than three spectacular main prizes. Teams from 18 European
countries will assemble in Geneva, where they will not only compete
against each other in an exclusive environment, but will also line up
together. We can look forward to thrilling duels in a unique atmosphere.”

From 15th November 2010 to 28th February 2011, anyone interested can
either register individually online at www.bmw.com/X3games or as a
complete team of three. The teams to appear at the BMW X3 Games in
Geneva will then be drawn and receive a notification concerning their
participation by mid-March 2010. Each entrant will compete in two of
the six sports. All three team members will work together to master a
creative task. A points system will be in place to determine the
overall score.

The BMW X3 Games are scheduled to start with a sailing regatta on
Lake Geneva. The contestants will sail on Beneteaus First Class 7.5
yachts. They will then move on to a challenging course in nearby
“Juragebirge”, which they will tackle on BMW Cross Country
Mountain Bikes. The ski competition will be held in Chamonix
Mont-Blanc, close to the Swiss metropolis, before the participants
must demonstrate their ability behind the wheel of the BMW X3. A round
of golf in Gross Stableford format and a 14-kilometre run round off
the sporting challenges at the BMW X3 Games.

The overall winners can look forward to an impressive vehicle. The
new BMW X3 celebrated its world debut at the “Mondial de
l'Automobile Paris 2010” in October. Featuring greater
sportiness, driving comfort, interior space and versatility, the X3 is
significantly increasing the lead in the segment founded by its predecessor.

First to the destination, last to refuel: When it comes to
efficiency, the two engine variants available as the car is launched
are setting new benchmarks. The Auto Start Stop function is combined
with an eight-speed automatic gearbox for the first time. No other
manufacturer in the world can boast such a comprehensive range of
measures for reducing consumption and CO² emissions as BMW.
High-performance engines and a sporty driving style need not conflict
with the environment and resources. BMW X3 xDrive20d with automatic
gearbox: combined consumption 5.6 litres/100 km, combined CO² 47
g/km. BMW X3 xDrive35i with automatic gearbox: combined consumption
8.8 litres/100 km, combined CO² 204 g/km. The new BMW X3 is also
the first BMW X model, which has an EPS Electric Power Steering and
optional Performance Control as standard. The choice of driver
assistance systems offered by BMW ConnectedDrive is unique in the
segment. The new BMW X3 can be equipped, inter alia, with Adaptive
Cornering Headlights, Head-up Display and reversing camera including
Top View.

dimension to the pleasure of driving a Sports Activity Vehicle of this
class. More significantly than ever, it establishes benchmarks in
driving dynamics, agility and efficiency, whilst at the same time
convincing through noticeably increased driving comfort. The design of
the new BMW X3 combines the typical BMW X character with a dynamically
stretched silhouette. Thanks to a generous amount of space and a high
degree of variability in the interior, it is possible to adapt travel
comfort as well as transportation capacities to suit each personal
requirement. Four-wheel drive technology BMW xDrive not only optimises
traction, but has also been specifically harmonised to ensure enhanced
driving dynamics. The new BMW X3 offers fascinating qualities with
uncompromising diversity, combining both driving pleasure and
efficiency with comfort and functionality, sportiness and elegance.

The four-cylinder diesel in the new BMW X3 xDrive20d has a
maximum output of 135 kW/184 bhp. Power output has been
increased by 5 kW compared to its predecessor. At the same time,
average consumption in the EU test cycle has been reduced by 14
percent to a mere 5.6 litres/100 km. The new
BMW X3 xDrive35i is powered by a straight-six petrol engine
with a maximum output of 225 kW/306 bhp. This makes it by far the
sportiest model within its competitive environment.

The Design: Urban elegance, dynamically flowing lines and the
characteristic features of a BMW X model.

The body design of the new BMW X3 conveys urban elegance and
versatile agility. The combination of a flat front end and a high rear
end produces, when viewed from the side, a dynamically formed wedge
shape, indicating the vehicle’s sporting characteristics. The
convex and concave surfaces are accentuated by distinctive lines.

At the front end of the new BMW X3, the forward-slanting BMW kidney
grille, a large headlight assembly, a powerful-looking front apron and
the distinctively contoured bonnet signalise self-assured presence.
Together with the round headlights, the fog lamps, which are
positioned far towards the outside, form the light source arrangement
that is characteristic of BMW X models. The upper edge of the
headlight assembly sports an accentuating chrome trim, creating the
focussed look so typical of BMW vehicles. In conjunction with the
optional Xenon headlights, the vehicle features daytime running lights
that function by means of bright white LED light rings.

The side view of the new BMW X3 is also characterised by a unique
interpretation of typical BMW X design features. These include the
powerfully flared wheel arches and the short distance between the
front axle and the instrument panel. The dynamic appearance of the
silhouette is additionally accentuated by three characteristic lines.

The rear end is characterised by horizontal lines, underlining the
new BMW X3’s robust character. Accurately applied lines and
expressively modelled surfaces create attractive light and shadow
effects. The taillights have a distinctive T shape that is
characteristic of the BMW X3.

Interior: Premium ambience, intelligent functionality.

A generous and variable spatial concept, high-grade materials and a
characteristic three-dimensional surface design provide the interior
of the new BMW X3 with a modern, premium ambience and intelligent
functionality. Brand-typical driver orientation is emphasised by the
asymmetrically designed centre console. The raised seating position
facilitates convenient entry, whilst optimising the overview of the
traffic situation. The 8.8-inch high-resolution screen of the
navigation system Professional featured in the new BMW X3 is the
largest on-board monitor in its segment.

Both up front and at the rear the new BMW X3 has a multitude of large
storage compartments, trays and cup holders. The three rear seats
offer outstanding comfort for travelling long distances. With a volume
of between 550 and 1,600 litres, the luggage compartment of the new
BMW X3 is the best in its segment. At the same time, the variability
with which available space can be adapted to suit each personal
requirement, is also unrivalled. The rear seat backrest can be split
at a ratio of 40 : 20 : 40 and the three segments
can be folded down either individually or together.

Engine range: Four-cylinder diesel and straight six-cylinder petrol
engine of the latest generation.

The new BMW X3 xDrive20d now offers better performance and
higher efficiency than any of its comparable rivals. It is powered by
a 2-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine with aluminium crankcase
and Common Rail direct injection, delivering a maximum power output of
135 kW/184 at 4,000 rpm and peak torque of 380 Nm between
1,750 and 2,750 rpm. The engine develops sufficient power to
allow the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in
8.5 seconds, reaching top speed at 210 km/h. With an average fuel
consumption of 5.6 litres/100 km, the BMW X3 xDrive20d
establishes a new benchmark for efficiency in this vehicle segment
(CO2 emission level: 149 g/km in conjunction with manual gearbox,
147 g/km in conjunction with automatic gearbox).

Spontaneous response, high-revving characteristics, excellent running
smoothness and outstanding efficiency characterise the power unit
featured in the BMW X3 xDrive35i. The 3.0-litre straight-six
engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo, direct petrol injection and
VALVETRONIC generates a maximum output of 225 kW/306 bhp at
5,800 rpm. Maximum torque of 400 Nm is available between
1,200 and 5,000 rpm. The sprint from 0 to 100 km takes
a mere 5.7 seconds. Top speed is 245 km/h. The BMW X3 xDrive35i
offers not only the most dynamic driving characteristics, but also by
far the most favourable fuel consumption and emission levels within
the competitive environment of its engine class. Average consumption
in the EU test cycle is 8.8 litres/100 km (CO2 emission level: 204 g/km).

BMW EfficientDynamics in the new BMW X3: Premiere for Auto Start Stop
function in conjunction with automatic transmission.

The new BMW X3 xDrive35i is equipped as standard with an
eight-speed automatic transmission. This option, also unique within
the competitive environment, is available for the BMW
X3 xDrive20d as an alternative to the standard six-speed manual
gearbox. As an option, the new BMW X3 xDrive35i comes with a
sports automatic transmission with shift paddles on the steering wheel.

The automatic transmission is combined for the first time with an
Auto Start Stop function. When stopping at road junctions or in a
traffic jam, the engine is automatically switched off. The Auto Start
Stop function is also a standard feature in the X3 xDrive20d with
manual gearbox. The car is additionally equipped with a gear shift
indicator. Furthermore, the equipment featured in all model variants,
which include brake energy regeneration, EPS Electric Power Steering,
demand-controlled ancillary components, intelligent lightweight
construction and tyres with reduced rolling resistance contribute
towards lowering fuel consumption and exhaust emission levels.

Newly developed suspension, optimised xDrive and unique options for
made-to-measure dynamics and comfort.

The new BMW X3 comes with permanent four-wheel drive technology BMW
xDrive as standard. Its electronic control unit, which is interlinked
with the DSC Dynamic Stability Control, counteracts at an early stage
any tendency to oversteer or understeer through fast and precise
response.
By means of innovative tuning designed to enhance
driving dynamics, the intelligent four-wheel drive technology
optimises not only traction, but, above all, handling in bends.
Optional Performance Control enhances the BMW X3’s agile
handling even further.

The new BMW X3 also features completely redeveloped suspension
technology. The combination of a double-joint spring-strut axle at the
front and a five-link rear axle offers in conjunction with a widened
track (92 mm wider than that of the predecessor) the ideal
prerequisites for optimising agility and driving comfort to an equal
degree. EPS Electric Power Steering including the Servotronic function
for speed-dependent power steering is incorporated in all versions of
the BMW X3 model for the first time and contributes significantly to
precise handling. The optional variable sports steering reduces the
degree of steering movement necessary to turn the front wheels and
provides BMW typical directional stability when the vehicle is being
driven straight ahead.

A further option is Dynamic Damper control. The electronically
controlled dampers adapt to road surface conditions and the
driver’s style of driving. The driver is able to influence the
characteristic map of the damper control by means of the Dynamic
Control system. This function, which is available for a BMW X model
for the first time, enables the driver to choose between the
“NORMAL”, “SPORT” and “SPORT+”
modes using a button on the centre console.

Like all BMW X models, the new BMW X3 is also provided with an
extremely torsion-resistant body, precisely defined support structures
and large deformation zones. The safety equipment package comprises
front and pelvic thorax airbags, side curtain head airbags,
three-point automatic seatbelts on all seats, belt force limiters,
belt latch tensioners and crash-active front headrests as well as
ISOFIX child seat mounts in the rear compartment.

Innovative options and functions from BMW ConnectedDrive.

The choice of optional features ranges from automatic climate control
with
2-zone control, a panorama sunroof, high-end audio
equipment and the navigation system Professional with hard-disk
storage, to automatic rear lid operation and a tow coupling with
electronically pivoting ball head. The choice of driver assistance
systems offered by BMW ConnectedDrive is unique in the segment. The
new BMW X3 can be equipped, inter alia, with the systems Head-up
Display, Adaptive Cornering Headlights, High-beam Assistant and
reversing camera including Top View. In addition, BMW ConnectedDrive
enables unrestricted use of the Internet within the vehicle, a
comprehensive integration of the Apple iPhone and other smartphones as
well as the use of web-based services for navigation and entertainment functions.

Production at the BMW Spartanburg plant.

The new BMW X3 is produced at the BMW Spartanburg plant in accordance
with stringent BMW Group quality standards. With the production of the
BMW X5 and BMW X6 models, the location, which is based in the US
Federal State of South Carolina, has become the competence centre for
BMW X models within the BMW Group’s worldwide production
network. Thanks to comprehensive extension measures, the preconditions
for integrating the new BMW X3 into the production process have also
been established.

Press Contact: Andreas Lampka
Tel: +491754381050
E-mail: andreas.lampka@bmwgroup.com

Press Kit,X3,Product,BMW

Munich. The BMW Group favoured a smooth transition
when carrying out the generation change of the bestseller BMW X3. The
end of production of the first generation of the Sports Activity
Vehicle (SAV) was celebrated at the plant of the Austrian production
partner Magna Steyr in Graz yesterday. Production of the new BMW X3,
which will be launched on the German market on 20 November 2010, will
begin today at the BMW Spartanburg plant in the US state of South
Carolina. The new BMW X3 is a resolute continuation of the formula for
success of the first SAV in its class. With further enhanced agility,
noticeably optimised driving comfort, more space than any of its
competitors and innovative equipment options, it offers the ideal
prerequisites to inherit the position of its predecessor as the
benchmark in the segment and to strengthen it further.

Within the last 7 years, the first-generation BMW X3 has written an
extraordinary success story. In Graz alone, 605,498 units of the agile
all-rounder came off the assembly line during this period. Together
with the vehicles produced within the framework of the CKD (Completely
Knocked Down) assembly in Russia, Egypt and Thailand, the total figure
adds up to 614,824 units. The last vehicle of the first model
generation, a Vermilion red metallic BMW X3 xDrive35d, will remain
with the Magna Steyr company, where it will be used in future as an
executive car. A BMW X3 xDrive20d with full emergency vehicle
specifications that had left the assembly line shortly before, will be
donated by the BMW Group to a non-profit making organisation. For many
years now, the BMW X3 has proved itself to be an ideal emergency
vehicle for police and doctors. At the end of its model life, yet
another vehicle will now take on this important task in the service of
the general public.

As the first and, for some time, the only premium vehicle of its
kind, the BMW X3 launched in 2004 and boasting intelligent four-wheel
drive BMW xDrive, outstanding handling characteristics and a variable
interior, gave reason for spontaneous enthusiasm and a lasting
positive response on the international automotive markets. As a
result, the concept of establishing benchmarks in the field of driving
dynamics within the competitive environment of all-terrain vehicles,
which had previously already been successfully pursued in the case of
the BMW X5 in a higher segment, was endorsed yet again.

Driving pleasure, premium quality and, in addition, outstanding
efficiency helped the BMW X3 become extremely popular and achieve
excellent results in independent surveys. Experts have honoured the
BMW X3 with several awards for outstanding safety, customer
satisfaction, reliability and stable value. These included top
rankings in the “Customer Satisfaction Index” (CSI) issued
by the J.D. Power market research institute, as well as in the
breakdown statistics kept by the Allgemeine Deutsche Automobilclub
(ADAC). Twice in succession, the BMW X3 was voted both
“Four-Wheel Drive Car of the Year” and “Off Road
Vehicle of the Year” respectively by readers of the magazines
“Auto Bild Allrad“ and “Off Road”.

The segment established by the first-generation BMW X3 is now also
served by other premium vehicle manufacturers. The new BMW X3 faces up
to intensified competition with consistently optimised qualities in
all relevant disciplines. The engines on offer for this Sports
Activity Vehicle boast the best performance and, thanks to BMW
EfficientDynamics, the most favourable fuel consumption and emission
levels as well. The vehicle’s entirely newly developed
suspension technology facilitates a clear advantage both in terms of
agility and driving comfort. With a loading capacity that can be
increased from 550 to 1,600 litres and
40 : 20 : 40 split-folding rear seat backrests,
the new BMW X3 offers the largest amount of space and at the same time
the highest level of variability in its segment. Moreover, there is a
choice of innovative equipment features, driver assistance systems and
mobility services by BMW ConnectedDrive that is unique within the
competitive environment. For example, the new BMW X3 is the only model
in its class to offer the options of a Head-Up Display and Internet
access inside the vehicle.

With the model change, the production of the BMW X3 is being
relocated to the BMW Spartanburg plant, a facility that has become the
expertise centre for BMW X models. So far, the US American location of
the BMW Group’s global production network has produced BMW X5
and BMW X6 models. Thanks to substantial extension work and with an
investment of around $750 million, the prerequisites for the
production of the new BMW X3 and the associated increase in the annual
production capacity to around 200,000 vehicles have been created at Spartanburg.

The collaboration between the BMW Group and Magna Steyr also lives on
within the framework of the new production structures. In the
meantime, production of the MINI Countryman has started in Graz. The
fourth model of the brand is not only the first MINI to feature four
doors and a large tailgate, but can for the first time also be fitted
with four-wheel drive technology. In this way, the Austrian production
partner’s expertise in the field of all-terrain vehicles, which
has already been demonstrated in the case of the BMW X3, continues to
be comprehensively utilised.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,X3,Product,BMW

BMW of North America today announced that the
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the 2009 BMW
3 Series Sedan, X5, and X3 models the top rating of "Good" in
each of its series of crash tests, earning each vehicle the Institute's
coveted Top Safety Pick Award. Receiving the Top Safety Pick for the
2009 BMW 3 Series Sedan, X5, and X3 vehicles is one of numerous awards
BMW has earned from the IIHS over the years. In fact, as a result of
IIHS crash tests in 2000, the 2001 BMW X5 earned the unique distinction
of not only being the best SUV, but also being the safest vehicle ever
tested by IIHS up to that point. "BMW continues to be committed to
both our active and passive safety technologies, and we are pleased to
receive the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick
award for the 2009 BMW 3 Series Sedan, X5, and X3," said Jim
O'Donnell, President of BMW of North America, LLC. The Institute
rates vehicles "Good," "Acceptable,"
"Marginal" or "Poor" based on performance in
high-speed Frontal Offset and Side Impact crash tests as well as an
evaluation of the vehicle's Rear Crash Protection/Head Restraints, which
protect against neck injuries in rear impact crashes. In order for a
vehicle to become a Top Safety Pick, it must earn "Good"
ratings in all three Institute tests. Additionally, as of 2007,
winning vehicles must also offer Electronic Stability Control (ESC) - a
standard feature on all BMW vehicles, known as Dynamic Stability
Control. The IIHS requires this feature based on Institute research
indicating that ESC significantly reduces crash risk, especially the
risk of fatal single vehicle crashes, by helping drivers maintain
control of their vehicles during emergency maneuvers. Offering a unique combination of
agility and versatility, the new BMW X3 is continuing its predecessor's
unique story of success. Powerful new engines, fresh design and a
sophisticated interior make BMW's Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) already
widely lauded for its outstanding agility and driving dynamics even
more attractive than before. With its wide range of features and new
technologies, the new BMW X3 has everything it takes to further expand
its exceptional position as a premium offer in its segment. Specific
modifications at the front, rear and side give the new BMW X3 even more
dynamic character, while the interior is dominated by particularly
sophisticated materials, flowing lines, and stylish colour schemes.
Additional driving dynamics on country roads, in city traffic and off
the beaten track is guaranteed by new power units delivering their
muscle smoothly to the road by way of BMW xDrive permanent all-wheel
drive with variable power distribution. The top engine featured in the
new BMW X3 is the second generation of the world's most sporting and
dynamic diesel: The newly developed 3.0-litre straight-six featured in
the BMW X3 3.0sd boasts Variable Twin Turbo (VTT) technology for
maximum output of 210 kW/286 hp (10 kW/14 hp more than on the
first-generation VTT diesel) and peak torque of 580 Newton-metres or 427
lb-ft (+ 20Nm). The new BMW X3 also features BMW's new generation of
straight-six petrol engines displacing 3.0 and, respectively, 2.5
litres. Boasting a composite magnesium/aluminium crankcase, VALVETRONIC
and bi-VANOS, these engines deliver maximum output of 200 kW/272 hp (+
30 kW/41 hp over the previous engine) and, respectively, 160 kW/218 hp
(+ 19 kW/26 hp). Even more effective and faster interaction of BMW's
intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive with DSC Dynamic Stability Control
and engine management is ensured on all engine variants by Integrated
Chassis Managements (ICM) with its optimised computer technology.
Dynamic performance borne out by powerful design. New design and body
features at the front and rear of the BMW X3 provide an even more
intense expression of the vehicle's striking and dynamic looks. Both
front and rear, the bumpers are clearly separated into two levels and
are finished largely in body colour, again emphasising the
sophisticated and sporting but elegant appearance of the new BMW X3.
Only the protection elements particularly exposed to impacts are made
of robust plastic. A particular feature of all BMW X models is their
so-called "six-eye face" - and on the new BMW X3 this very
special face is characterised by new dual circular headlights with
their light sources and reflectors housed beneath a clear glass cover.
This look is further enhanced by foglamps arranged on one line
extending diagonally to the outside from the main headlights to the
wheels. Again, this particular configuration supports the impression of
a dynamic vehicle crouching powerfully on the road, and is further
enhanced by the painted front air dam beneath the outer bumper.
Having grown in size and featuring grid rods varying in colour depending
on the model variant, the BMW kidney grille is a particularly
outstanding highlight bound to catch the eye. New rear light clusters
with clear glass covers on LED-fed horizontal light rods ensure
powerful and striking night design, while also giving the new BMW X3 a
clear sign of distinction during the day. Another characteristic factor
is the horizontal lines stretching out in a dominating look from the
tailgate all the way down to the bumper and accentuating the powerful
stance of the new BMW X3 also from this angle. Viewed from the side,
the BMW X3 stands out clearly through its discreet wedge shape further
enhanced by the lower character line. This specific contour line is
taken up in the lower side area of the front and rear air dams, giving
further emphasis to the sleek, stretched and dynamic look of the
vehicle. Top-quality materials and refined design in the interior. The
harmonious lines of the new BMW X3 extend smoothly into and within the
interior, with a gentle flow of shapes and transitions from one section
to the other. The high level of quality applied in choosing and
finishing all materials comes out clearly and tangibly in all details,
superior function and refined design providing a perfect match. The
instrument panel is characterised above all by new decorative trim
taking up the colour and materials of the trim on the centre console.
Galvanised metal on the door handles and controls, exclusive leather
and cloth options, harmonious colour schemes and patterns in the roof
lining, as well as high-quality synthetic surfaces with a classy grain
finish reflect the character of the interior both sophisticated and
elegant all in one. New three-spoke steering wheels and generous storage
boxes integrated in the door linings further enhance the supreme
impression of high quality. A choice of no less than four levels of
equipment, ten paintwork colours, six interior colours, and five trim
options gives the customer absolute freedom in personalising his or her
new BMW X3. And last but not least, the material chosen for the seat
upholstery is also used consistently on the centre console, the
armrests and in the door linings. Premiere: a diesel right at the top.
The new BMW X3 is available with a choice of no less than three petrol
and three diesel engines. In all cases, these new six-cylinders combine
more power with greater torque, reduced weight, and enhanced efficiency.
The entry-level power unit in both petrol and diesel guise is a
four-cylinder, with the particular performance characteristics of all
engine variants making a significant contribution to the agile driving
behaviour of BMW's very special SAV. Yet a further, truly unique
feature in engine technology is that the BMW X3 is the first BMW to
feature a diesel power unit right at the top of the engine range, with
BMW's new 3.0-litre straight-six diesel enhanced by Variable Twin Turbo
(VTT) technology making its debut in the BMW X3 3.0sd. Unique torque
and output thanks to Variable Twin Turbo. The new BMW X3 3.0sd is
powered by the most sporting and dynamic six-cylinder diesel ever
available in a production car: The second generation of BMW's top-end
diesel now developing maximum output of 210 kW/286 hp features Variable
Twin Turbo (VTT) technology introduced by BMW in 2004 as the world's
first car maker in the BMW 535d. Also referred to as two-stage
turbocharging, this technology incorporates both a small turbocharger
cutting in at lower engine speeds and an additional turbocharger
activated for growing power and performance requirements. Maximum
torque now raised to an even more significant 580 Nm or 427 lb-ft is
maintained consistently from 1,750-2,250 rpm. This supreme power and
muscle also comes out clearly in the performance of the new BMW X3
3.0sd: Acceleration from a standing start to 100 km/h comes in just 6.6
seconds, top speed is a most significant 240 km/h or 149 mph. Average
fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is nevertheless a very economical
8.7 litres of diesel fuel for 100 kilometres, equal to 32.5 mpg Imp.
And last but not least, particle filters and an oxidation catalyst
ensure highly effective emission management and control at all times.
New 3.0-litre diesel engines: powerful and light. One of the reasons for
the outstanding efficiency of BMW's top-end diesel is the reduction in
weight by 25 kilos and introduction of the latest generation of
common-rail direct fuel injection complete with piezo injectors. These
two factors also benefit the 3.0-litre straight-six diesel in the BMW
X3 3.0d likewise featuring an all-aluminium crankcase and piezo
injectors in the fuel injection system. The increase in injection
pressure to 1,600 bar ensures a particularly fast and efficient charge
effect in the combustion chambers, and the combination of this superior
technology with a turbocharger featuring variable turbine geometry
(VTG) provides maximum output of 160 kW/218 hp and peak torque of 500
Nm or 369 lb-ft. The new BMW X3 3.0d accelerates to 100 km/h in 7.4
seconds and has a top speed of 210 km/h or 130 mph. Special V-class
tyres available as an option from the factory allow an even higher top
speed of 220 km/h or 136 mph, for even greater superiority on fast
routes. Returning average fuel consumption in the EU cycle of 7.9 litres
diesel/ 100 kilometres (equal to 35.8 mpg Imp), the new BMW X3 3.0d also
offers maximum efficiency. And it almost goes without saying that this
model likewise comes as standard with a particulates filter fitted
close to the engine. The new BMW X3 2.0d is an even more outstanding
example of superior economy: Featuring a four-cylinder power unit with
common-rail fuel injection, this model's maximum output is 110 kW/150
hp, with torque peaking at 330 Nm or 243 lb-ft all the way from
2,000-2,500 rpm. Acceleration to 100 km/h is in 10.2 seconds, and the
top speed of the BMW X3 2.0d is 198 km/h or 123 mph, on average fuel
consumption of just 7.2 litres/ 100 kilometres or 39.2 mpg Imp. Here
again, a particulates filter comes as standard on BMW's four-cylinder
diesel. Petrol engines: more power, less weight. The particularly
light, fast-revving and efficient straight-six petrol engines in the
new BMW X3 comes in two displacement and performance levels. Both
engines boast a composite magnesium/aluminium crankcase, variable
VALVETRONIC valve control, and a coolant pump controlled and
masterminded on demand. And weighing just 165 kilos or 364 lb, these
out¬standing power units also contribute to the well-balanced
distribution of axle loads and, accordingly, to the excellent agility
and driving dynamics of the BMW X3. The new BMW X3 3.0si features a
3.0-litre six-cylinder developing maximum output of 200 kW/272 hp and
peak torque of 315 Nm or 232 lb-ft. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h comes
in just 7.2 seconds, with a top speed of 210 km/h or 130 mph on
standard tyres and an even more impressive 232 km/h or 144 mph on
optional V-class tyres available from the factory. Delivering average
fuel consumption in the EU cycle of 10.1 litres/100 km or 28.0 mpg Imp,
the BMW X3 3.0si offers a level of economy quite exemplary in this
performance category. The 2.5-litre six-cylinder in the BMW X3 2.5si
develops maximum output of 160 kW/218 hp and peak torque of 250 Nm or
184 lb-ft. The result is acceleration to 100 km/h in 8.5 seconds, and a
top speed of 210 km/h or 130 mph (221 km/h or 137 mph on V-class
tyres). Average fuel consumption in the EU cycle, in turn, is 9.9
litres/100 kilometres, equal to 28.5 mpg Imp. The 2.0-litre power unit
featured in the new BMW X3 2.0i is the only four-cylinder in the world
to feature VALVETRONIC variable valve control. Two other equally
outstanding features are bi-VANOS variable camshaft management and
BMW's DISA variable intake manifold. Benefiting from these technologies,
the BMW X3 2.0i offers an exceptionally high standard of performance,
smoothness and efficiency for a four-cylinder. Acceleration to 100
km/h, in turn, comes in 11.5 seconds, and the top speed of the new BMW
X3 2.0i is 198 km/h or 123 mph. And average fuel consumption in the EU
cycle, finally, is 9.3 litres/100 kilometres, equal to 30.4 mpg Imp.
New automatic transmission for superior dynamics, efficiency, and
comfort. With the exception of the BMW X3 3.0sd, all versions of BMW's
new SAV come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox. The automatic
transmission complete with Steptronic available as an option also
features six gears for extra convenience. Automatic transmission is
standard on the new top model in BMW's SAV model series, the BMW X3
3.0sd, where an automatic transmission developed especially to interact
with an extra-powerful engine ensures appropriate choice of the right
driving gear at all times. Hence, the new six-speed auto¬matic
transmission handles this task at incomparable speed and with
outstanding precision and efficiency. New converter technology and
particularly powerful software serve to reduce reaction and gearshift
times compared with a conventional automatic transmission by up to 50
per cent. And thanks to the direct gear search function, even the
process of skipping one or several gears when shifting down does not
require any additional time. Through its exceptionally dynamic shifting
process and direct interaction with the engine, the new six-speed
automatic transmission brings out all the sporting and active qualities
of the new BMW X3 3.0sd to a truly unprecedented level. And at the same
time it is simply perfect for comfortable, relaxed and efficient
cruising at low engine speeds. Permanent all-wheel drive the intelligent
way: BMW xDrive. The new BMW X3 owes its all-round potential largely to
BMW's permanent, intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system ensuring
fully variable front-to-rear power distribution through its
exceptionally fast and precise reaction. Via a power divider complete
with an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch, BMW xDrive
feeds the power of the engine precisely to where it can be used best
and with maximum effect. The result is not only maximum traction on
difficult terrain, but also superior driving dynamics, with the system
counteracting any over- or understeer in bends right from the start.
The differential lock function, in turn, is ensured by the brakes
intervening on any of the wheels threatening to spin. Power
distribution 40 : 60 in normal driving situations. In normal driving
situations engine power is divided 40 : 60 front-to- rear for optimum
smoothness and performance. And then xDrive responds immediately to any
change in surface conditions or driving dynamics by modifying the ratio
of power distribution accordingly. On surfaces varying extremely in
their frictional coefficient from front-to-rear, for example, BMW
xDrive is able to re-direct almost the entire drive power of the engine
instantaneously to one single axle. Another advantage of the system is
its ability to counteract oversteer in fast bends by closing the
multiple-plate clutch tighter and feeding additional power to the front
wheels in the interest of optimum driving stability. Enhanced to an
even higher standard: Integrated Chassis Management. To ensure such fast
and precise reaction, xDrive all-wheel drive, DSC Dynamic Stability
Control, and engine management are connected to one another by
Integrated Chassis Management. With the suspension control sensors also
feeding xDrive with the data required for determining current driving
conditions, xDrive is able to respond proactively, as it were, in order
to stabilise the vehicle at all times. With its new control philosophy,
Integrated Chassis Management ensures even faster and more precise
coordination of xDrive and DSC. While so far the behaviour of the
vehicle was influenced almost independently by engine and brake
management, on the one hand, and the management of longitudinal forces,
on the other, these three control cycles now operate in parallel. So
while the management of longitudinal forces masterminds the division of
engine power front-to-rear, brake management is able to intervene
individually on each wheel, applying the brakes appropriately in the
interest of optimum traction and driving dynamics. Engine management,
in turn, is able to reduce or increase drive power whenever required.
Forming such a precise network with DSC, BMW xDrive ensures a fast and
precise response to any change in driving conditions and, as a result,
an even higher standard of driving dynamics. DSC Dynamic Stability
Control with additional functions. The new BMW X3 features an even more
sophisticated system of Dynamic Stability Control now enhanced by
numerous additional functions: BMW's new DSC not only ensures superior
driving stability and traction, but also optimises the effect of the
brakes by increasing brake pressure as required in response to even the
slightest fading under extremely high brake temperatures. Building up
moderate brake pressure at an early point in time, the system also
enhances brake standby in situations likely to require spontaneous
application of the brakes. Regular Dry Braking, in turn, a function
activated automatically as soon as the driver switches on the
windscreen wipers, optimises brake performance in the wet. DBC Dynamic
Brake Control, to present yet another example, automatically maximises
brake pressure in an emergency when the driver is required to brake
all-out. And last but not least, the Set-Off Assistant significantly
facilitates the process of setting off on an uphill gradient. DSC
Dynamic Stability Control also comprises the ABS anti-lock brake system,
ASC Automatic Stability Control, HDC Hill Descent Control, Trailer
Stability Control, and CBC Cornering Brake Control preventing the
vehicle from swerving whenever the driver applies the brakes lightly in
a bend. DTC featured for the first time also in a BMW X model. DTC
Dynamic Traction Control also included in the new DSC system likewise
enhances the superior driving dynamics of the new BMW X3. With DTC
raising the thresholds for intervention by the engine and the brakes to
a higher level, the BMW X3 is able to set off smoothly under difficult
conditions such as loose snow, intentionally allowing the drive wheels
to slightly spin. DTC also allows a particularly sporting and active
style of motoring by offering the driver higher lateral acceleration
all the way to a light and controllable drift in bends. Pressing down
the DTC button somewhat longer, the driver is able to completely
deactivate DSC, as on BMW's other models. In that case all that remains
is a transverse lock function with the brakes intervening on the wheel
spinning. The new BMW X3 comes as standard on 17-inch light-alloy
wheels, the BMW X3 3.0sd featuring even larger 18-inch wheels as
standard. Various other light-alloy wheels measuring 18 and even 19
inches are also available as an option, while the Tyre Defect Indicator
likewise fitted as standard informs the driver in good time of any loss
of tyre pressure. Generous and safe: the bodyshell of the new BMW X3.
With its solid body structure and complete range of retention and safety
systems masterminded by a central electronic control unit, the new BMW
X3 offers passive safety of the highest standard. High-strength
longitudinal arms and crossbars, together with bolted-on deformation
units, ensure appropriate diversion and absorption of impact forces in
a collision from the front. The consequences of a side-on collision, in
turn, are minimised inter alia by diagonal door reinforcement bars with
high-strength steel profiles hooking on to the side frame in the event
of deformation for additional absorption of impact energy. As a result,
the passenger cell remains largely undamaged even in a severe collision.
Within the interior not only frontal and side airbags, but also curtain
head airbags at the side all come as standard, inflating out of the
covers in the A-pillars and roof lining and protecting both the front
and rear occupants from injury. The new BMW X3 measures 4,569
millimetres or 179.9'' in length, 1,853 millimetres or 73.0'' in width,
and 1,674 millimetres or 65.9'' in height - and precisely these figures
make BMW's five-door SAV absolutely ideal for many purposes and
requirements. As the more compact member of BMW's SAV model range, the
new BMW X3 combines supreme agility and handling with generous and
flexible space inside, offering everything required for perfect
versatility onroad and offroad. Loading capacity beneath the luggage
compartment cover is 480 litres or 16.8 cubic feet. The large tailgate
opening far up for extra convenience and the low loading sill make
loading and unloading of even bulky objects an easy exercise. And after
folding down the asymmetrically split rear seat bench, the luggage
compartment offers maximum capacity of no less than 1,560 litres or
54.6 cubic feet. Features and equipment: from comprehensive to
exclusive. Apart from the wide range of colours, upholstery and trim
surfaces, attractive options and special features give the customer a
wide range of choice in personalising his or her new BMW X3.
Sophisticated navigation and audio systems, for example, ensure an even
higher standard of travelling comfort in the new BMW X3 enhanced to an
even higher level by the BMW Assist telematics service available as an
option. Bi-xenon headlights also available as an option provide optimum
visibility at night and add that special BMW look through the
ring-shaped parking lights included in the headlight units. The
headlights may also be combined with BMW's Adaptive Lights moving in
the right direction in bends and on winding roads for optimum
illumination of the road ahead. And last but not least, Bending Lights
integrated in the foglamps facilitate a change in direction at night as
well as the process of manoeuvring the vehicle at low speeds. PDC Park
Distance Control measures the distance to an obstacle in front of or
behind the vehicle. When parking, therefore, the driver, benefits from
an acoustic signal "telling" him the distance from the
vehicle to an object in the way. Last but again not least, fresh air
fans are able to enjoy their driving pleasure in the new BMW X3 in a
particularly attractive manner, with the two-piece panorama roof
measuring 0.65 square metres in size providing an exceptionally
generous view of the sky above. Given its wide range of qualities, the
BMW X3 has become an outstanding achiever in international car markets.
And indeed - virtually unlimited options in the use of the vehicle,
sporting and dynamic driving characteristics, the stylish presence of
the X3's body design, and superior quality of finish make the new BMW
X3 a genuine exception in the all-wheel-drive market. In everyday
traffic the new BMW X3 combines effortless handling with agile driving
characteristics. Five large and generous seats and a luggage
compartment able to handle even major loads underline the vehicle's
all-round qualities. And when driving in winter, off the beaten track
or as a sturdy vehicle towing a heavy trailer, the BMW X3 benefits from
the offroad qualities of its body structure, the chassis and
suspension, as well as the traction advantages of BMW's xDrive
all-wheel-drive system. Versatility is therefore the big strength of the
BMW X3 not only inside the vehicle, but also in terms of driving
features. So that, in a nutshell, the new BMW X3 provides the
foundation for superior mobility in all situations, combining the joys
of activity and spontaneity all in one.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Press Kit,X3,Product,BMW

The diverse range of
accessories and retrofit solutions make the BMW X3 more attractive,
further enhancing its status as the first premium SAV in its category.
A popular choice is the aerodynamic kit, which blends harmoniously with
the car's appearance. This package includes bumpers finished in body
colour, side sills, wheel arch trims, foot boards, modified fog lights,
an additional rear-lid trim and all add-on accessories. As an addition
to its standard wheel program, BMW offers five exclusive 19-inch rims
as an original accessory. An important safety accessory is the
retrofittable front and rear-end camera. While reversing the car, the
rear-end camera, which is integrated into the rear lid, automatically
relays video to the on-board computer display, alerting the driver and
avoiding costly parking collisions. The front-end camera, with a
self-cleaning effect, can "see round corners", making blind
exits less dangerous. At an angle of 90 degrees, the on-board monitor
can show traffic approaching from the left and right. Entertainment
accessories include an original BMW DVD system integrated into the roof
lining, which can be upgraded to feature a central folding monitor. The
DVD system can be activated using an infrared remote control or by
direct operation of the device. Using the two wireless infrared
headphones, rear-seat passengers can enjoy movies, listen to audio CD's
or connect a camcorder or a video game console without distracting the driver.

Press Contact: Leanne Blanckenberg
Tel: +971-4-3132-615
E-mail: leanne.blanckenberg@bmw.com

Press Release,X3,Product,BMW

BMW is
enlarging the highly successful X-family through the addition of a very
dynamic and versatile new vehicle: The new BMW X3 combines the
outstanding agility of a typical BMW with the broad range of practical
benefits offered by a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). The BMW X3 is
indeed the first premium vehicle of its kind in the SAV segment below
the X5, setting out in the market to conquer roads and tracks the world
over. The X3 combines the characteristic proportions of a Sports
Activity with both classic and new BMW design elements. The modern
design language with that unique interplay of concave and convex
surfaces gives the X3 a youthful, fresh appearance. Numerous
characteristic details, particularly the re-interpretation of the
classic "Hofmeister kick" in the rear side windows, the newly
designed double kidney grille, as well as the front and rear lights
underline the unique position of this special model within the BMW
range. Long wheelbase with short overhangs and the roof line slowly
dropping to the rear accentuate the dynamic character of this Sports
Activity even at a standstill. Powerfully bulged wheel arches and the
striking front end, finally, give this newcomer a strong character full
of self-confidence, emphasizing its superior stance in every situation.
A new dimension in the BMW model range. The basic facts and figures
alone clearly show that this is an all-new, absolutely unique model
series: Measuring 4,565 millimetres (197.7'') in length, the X3 is 87
millimetres (3.4'') longer than the 3 Series Touring, but almost 30
centimetres (11.8'') shorter than the new 5 Series Saloon. And
measuring 4,667 mm (183.7'') from bumper to bumper, the X5, in turn, is
clearly the X3's bigger brother. We find the same relative figures when
considering the wheelbase of the X3 measuring 2,795 millimetres
(110.0''), versus 2,725 millimetres (107.3'') on the 3 Series Touring
and 2,820 millimetres (111.0'') on the X5. In terms of height, on the
other hand, the X3, measuring 1,674 millimetres (65.9''), is clearly
higher than both the 3 Series Touring (1429 mm/ 56.3'' ) and the 5
Series Saloon (1,468 mm/57.8'' ), only the X5 leaving an even longer
shadow with its height of 1,715 mm (67.5''). And with only the driver
sitting at the wheel, ground clearance of the X3 measuring exactly 201
millimetres (7.91'') is absolutely sufficient even on rough terrain.
Muscular straight-six power units for sporting performance. BMW's
straight-six gasoline and diesel engines famous for their supreme
refinement and performance ensure dynamic motoring wherever you go.
Developing maximum output of 231 bhp, the agile X3 3.0i reaches a top
speed in standard trim of 210 km/h , the optional high-speed set-up
available with the Sports Package allowing an even higher top speed of
224 km/h. The power unit featured in the X3 2.5i, in turn, develops
maximum output of 192 bhp. Revving smoothly even up to high speeds, the
3.0-litre six-cylinder also allows the driver to accelerate quickly and
dynamically from 0-100 km/h in just 7.8 seconds. The aficionado of
supreme torque will be thrilled in particular by the X3 3.0d, the
straight-six turbodiesel with second-generation common rail direct fuel
injection only recently upgraded developing maximum output of 204 bhp in
the X3, and giving this superior Sports Activity no less than 410 Nm
maximum torque. This also provides a top speed of 210 km/h increased
even further to 218 km/h with BMW's high-speed set-up. And when it
comes to acceleration, the diesel is also an outstanding performer,
booming from 0-100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds. Fuel consumption in the
process remains very modest, however, the X3 3.0d requiring just 8.4
litres of diesel for 100 kilometres, equal to 33.6 mpg Imp. All three
engine variants come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox and
are available as an option with five-speed automatic transmission. The
new xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The all-new, intelligent xDrive
all-wheel-drive system setting a new standard in the agility of
all-wheel-drive vehicles is a particular highlight of the BMW X3:
xDrive allows infinite, fully variable distribution of drive forces
between the front and rear axle, the system immediately recognising the
need for a change in power distribution and responding extremely
quickly to such a change, in usual road-going situations generally
before the wheel even loses its grip. This enables xDrive to transmit
optimum drive power to the respective axle at all times even when
taking a bend at speed, significantly reducing over- and understeer in
the process. On the road xDrive offers a significant improvement of
agility, driving pleasure and safety all in one. Suspension control
systems such as DSC are not required until a much later point in time
than on a conventional all-wheel-drive vehicle, and xDrive guarantees
better traction and driving conditions on rough or slippery terrain,
since engine power is transferred almost instantaneously to the wheels
with more grip as soon as a wheel is about to spin, thus reliably
interrupting the flow of traction. Excellent driving experience thanks
to the commanding seating position. In its versatility the new X3 is an
outstanding performer not only on all kinds of terrain, where it
consistently demonstrates its agile and dynamic character. Rather, the
sophisticated interior and the wide range of equipment make the X3 the
ideal BMW for the active and versatile individualist in every other
respect, too. Sitting in their commanding position so characteristic of
a BMW Sports Activity, the occupants not only see the world around them
from a very clear, pleasant perspective, but also enjoy a very modern
and spacious interior: The X3 combines elegance and an aesthetic look
appropriate for a vehicle of this character with a sporting ambience
and a wide range of practical details. Able to choose from a great many
classical as well as sporting and modern materials and colours, the
customer has numerous options in personalising the interior of his - or
her - X3. Within the cockpit the two circular instruments are grouped
in typical BMW style within an elegant pinnacle, the middle of the
dashboard is dominated by the optional 16:9 colour monitor of the
navigation system moving up automatically when in use. Lots of space
and superior functions. The X3 offers truly ample space behind the
tailgate opening up to a steep angle for easy access, allowing
convenient accommodation of all kinds of luggage and sports equipment
such as several mountain bikes: Depending on the arrangement of the
seats, luggage space is up to 1,560 litres or almost 55 cubic feet.
Numerous additional storage compartments and boxes round off the
superior functionality of the X3 with a service load, depending on the
engine, of up to 500 kilos (1,100 lb). Unladen weight is between 1,740
kg/3,837 lb (X3 2.5i) and 1,850 kg/4,079 lb (X3 3.0d). And if you wish
to take along even heavier and bulkier sports equipment or any other
kind of trailer, the optional towing hook on the X3 2.5 is homologated
for trailers weighing up to 1,800 kg (3,969 lb), the two three-litre
models even being able to tow 2,000 kg (4,410 lb) on a trailer equipped
with brakes. Regardless of the weight towed, BMW's unique trailer
stability control ensures safe driving conditions with, say, a boat
trailer or other trailers of any kind. This extension of the DSC
suspension control system is standard, just like HDC Hill Descent
Control for taking downhill gradients safely even on loose ground. In
the process of developing the X3, BMW's engineers have naturally given
particular significance to active and passive safety. Right from the
start, the remarkable configuration and design principle of a BMW
Sports Activity, with the front drive shaft running through the oil
sump, has given the X3 a very low centre of gravity, reducing body sway
in the process. With its intelligent distribution of power, xDrive
keeps the X3 very stable and secure even in fast bends, generally
avoiding critical situations from the beginning. And should such a
situation arise nevertheless, DSC suspension control featured as
standard intervenes immediately to restore the stability of the X3. Yet
a further feature fitted as standard on the X3 is the Tyre Pressure
Indicator (TPI) constantly comparing wheel speed in order to monitor air
pressure in the tyres and giving the driver both an optical and an
acoustic warning in the event of any loss of pressure. Additional
highlights: panorama roof and Adaptive Headlights. The BMW X3 comes
with a very wide range of optional features, two particular highlights
being the new, large panorama roof and BMW's innovative ALC Adaptive
Headlights. The two-piece panorama roof extends almost completely
throughout the entire roof area of the X3, covering a glass area of
0.65 square metres. And the driver is able to open up the roof
completely simply at the touch of a button. Adaptive Headlights, in
turn, improve the driver's visibility in the dark by swivelling to the
side in an infinite adjustment process geared to the steering angle of
the vehicle. This adjusts the two bi-xenon headlight units as required
as a function of the steering angle, yaw rate and road speed, thus
illuminating bends ahead of the driver clearly and brightly. BMW
offers the particularly performance-minded purchaser of the X3 a special
Sports Package which, thanks to its specific suspension set-up, gives
the X3 an even higher top speed. Further features included in this
package are white direction indicators, satin chrome, and star-spoke
light-alloy wheels, as well as a leather sports steering wheel and
sports seats for both the driver and front passenger. The new BMW X3
will be available in the Middle East from February 2004.

Press Contact: Leanne Blanckenberg
Tel: +971-4-3132-615
E-mail: leanne.blanckenberg@bmw.com

Press Kit,X3,Product,BMW

The X3 will make
its debut into the Middle East market in early 2004. The new BMW X3
combines the outstanding agility of a typical BMW with the wide range
of practical features offered by a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV). The X3
is the first premium model in the SAV segment beneath the X5. "The
BMW X5 was an instant trendsetter and has enjoyed unprecedented success
here in the region. Since its launch three years ago we have delivered
6032 vehicles to our customer in the Middle East," said Robert
Bailey-McEwan, Managing Director, BMW Group Middle East. The BMW X3
combines the characteristic proportions of a Sports Activity Vehicle
with both classic and innovative BMW design features. The modern design
language with convex and concave surfaces gives the X3 a youthful and
fresh look. BMW's 3.0-litre straight-six gasoline and diesel power
units ensure dynamic performance. Delivering 231 bhp, the agile X3
3.0i reaches a top speed of up to 210km/h and a Sports Package will be
also available with a high-speed set-up providing a top speed of
224km/h. A special highlight of the BMW X3 is the all-new intelligent
xDrive all-wheel-drive technology allowing adjustable and fully
variable 100% distribution of power from the rear to the front of the
vehicle - the system immediately recognises any need for change in
power distribution and responds quickly to ensure that the wheels don't
loose their grip. As a result, the X3 is able to feed optimum torque
to the respective axle at any time during dynamic cornering,
significantly minimizing both under - and oversteer in the process,
adding a major safety factor to the performance of the car. On the
road, xDrive offers a significantly higher standard of agility, driving
pleasure and safety all in one. xDrive also ensures better grip and
traction on slippery or rough terrain. This superior versatility of
the new BMW X3 is also evident in the interior and wide range of
equipment making this the ideal BMW for the active, versatile
individual. The new SAV enjoys a modern and spacious interior, the
typical elegant and aesthetic BMW looks are combined with a wide range
of sporty and practical details. "The expansion of our X-family
with this new model series promises exciting times; the car is superb
in design, performance, safety and comfort and we look forward to an
even bigger share of the 4x4 market," added Bailey-McEwan. - Ends -

Press Contact: Leanne Blanckenberg
Tel: +971-4-3132-615
E-mail: leanne.blanckenberg@bmw.com

Press Release,X3,Product,BMW
