Munich/Zagreb. The BMW Group and the Croatian
University of Zagreb’s Regional Centre of Excellence for Robotic
Technology (CRTA) continue to advance joint research in battery cell
production. The “Insight” research project will develop and implement
practical AI models to optimise battery cell production at the BMW
Group. The research project covers the entire battery cell value
chain: from electrode production to end-of-line testing and in-house
  developed direct recycling.

How the research project saves raw materials, costs and time

At the Battery Cell Competence Centre (BCCC) in Munich, the BMW Group
is developing battery cells for future generations of high-voltage
batteries. As part of this process, numerous test series are
conducted, which by their very nature require significant time and
material investment. At the same time, these tests tie up
manufacturing equipment and laboratory capacity. This is where the
“Insight” research project comes in: Its artificial intelligence
network uses existing test data, as well as real-time data from
ongoing production, to accurately predict battery cell process
parameters and performance data. As a result, the duration and number
of test series can be significantly reduced, while maintaining or
improving quality. In this way, the newly developed AI systems reduce
the material and time required in individual process steps by more
  than 50 percent.

  Other cell production use cases

The research project’s prediction models not only reduce the number
of test series but also support final approval of battery cells.
Following initial charging at the end of production, the cells must be
stored for a defined period at precisely specified temperatures before
they can be installed in a battery housing. This phase, also referred
to as the “quarantine”, requires corresponding storage capacity.
However, the research project’s AI systems are able to conduct a full
analysis of the battery cells in advance, potentially eliminating this
  process step in the future.

Research collaboration combines theory and practice

Since the project was launched in 2024, the BMW Group and the
University of Zagreb have been developing joint solutions using
artificial intelligence to improve battery cell production. To this
end, doctoral candidates and students at the University of Zagreb are
collating and structuring available production data and using it to
create AI models that can identify specific patterns. These AI models
then make predictions that further optimise production performance,
quality and costs. “We are working on scaling the newly developed AI
models from the prototype environment,” explains Christian
Siedelhofer, head of Technology Development Lithium-Ion Battery Cells
at the BMW Group. One option would be to enable cell manufacturers.
“We are also examining to what extent these models are suitable for
additional use cases within our production network.”

  Win-win through knowledge sharing

The University of Zagreb contributes expertise in mechanical
engineering, electrical engineering and computer science to the
project. Ongoing knowledge sharing benefits both partners: The
University of Zagreb provides the BMW Group with access to the latest
research findings, while its doctoral candidates and students have the
opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice.

  Development of young talent

Another aspect of the cooperation is the development of young talent.
“Our joint project gets doctoral candidates and students interested in
AI and battery cells and the exciting work we do at our Battery Cell
Competence Centres,” says Stefan Kerscher, head of Technology
Development Battery Cells at the BMW Group. “We are delighted when
young talents decide to embark on a career with our company.” The
cooperation offers students intensive mentoring and the opportunity to
expand their professional network across the industry, enhancing their
attractiveness on the job market and opening up outstanding career
opportunities. The cooperation between the BMW Group and the
University of Zagreb strengthens the innovation capability and
  competitiveness of both partners.

Battery cell expertise along the entire value chain

The BMW Group consolidates its battery cell know-how at its
Competence Centres in Munich, Parsdorf and Salching. The Battery Cell
Competence Centre (BCCC) in Munich houses research and development for
the battery cells of the future. The best battery concept from the
BCCC will be produced under near-series conditions at the Cell
Manufacturing Competence Centre (CMCC) in Parsdorf. Close
cross-divisional collaboration between Development, Purchasing and
Production integrates product and process in a unique way. In addition
to producing sample cells, the BMW Group is also focusing its efforts
on the reuse of materials. As part of this process, the company has
put into service a Cell Recycling Competence Centre (CRCC) in
Salching, Lower Bavaria, together with Encory GmbH, which will
implement the innovative direct recycling concept. The intellectual
property for the recycling method is owned by the BMW Group.

Press Contact: Rami Joudi
Tel: +971-56-507-5762
E-mail: rami.joudi@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Research & Development,Locations,Sustainability,Drive Technologies,Mobility of the future,Production,Production Plants,Artificial Intelligence,Battery Cells,Munich

Munich/Steyr (Austria). The BMW Group Plant Steyr
today began series production of the e-engine for the Neue Klasse.
“Today, we are laying the foundations for the future of the BMW
Group,” explained Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management
of BMW AG responsible for Production. “As the first production site
for the Gen6 electric engine, Plant Steyr is central to the Neue
Klasse and the continued development of our global production
network.” The electric engine for the sixth generation of BMW eDrive
(Gen6) is the first fully-electric drive train to be produced at the
Steyr location in Austria. From there, it will be shipped throughout
the production network, providing the drive train for the Neue Klasse.
“Three years ago, we announced that we would build this electric
engine in Steyr. Today, we are proud to deliver it,” said Klaus von
Moltke, SVP of Engine Production for BMW AG and plant director of the
Steyr facility. “What we are launching here today is more than just a
production ramp-up. It is a firm commitment to Europe, to technology
  and to the future.”

Technology openness: Plant Steyr as centre of drive train expertise

Between the project launch in 2022 and 2030, the BMW Group is
investing over one billion euros in expanding development and
production expertise for e-drives at the Steyr location. This capacity
expansion will ensure the plant remains the BMW Group's leading
location for drive trains. For over 40 years, the plant has developed
and manufactured internal combustion engines for the BMW and MINI
brands. This extensive experience and wealth of expertise in drive
trains make the engine plant the ideal facility to produce the Gen6
electric engines. The site will continue to manufacture diesel and
petrol engines in parallel. “Technology openness is our strength – it
gives us the necessary flexibility to secure long-term jobs,” said von
Moltke. Around 1,000 employees will work in the new electric engine
assembly. Depending on global demand, half of the Steyr location’s
total workforce could be employed in e-mobility by 2030. von Moltke:
“Steyr will remain the heart of our drive train expertise – both for
  combustion engines and electromobility.”

Powertrain components produced in Steyr, aluminium housings
    from Landshut

Rotor, stator, transmission and inverter – all core components of the
innovative, highly integrated e-drive – will be manufactured at Plant
Steyr. The housing for the electric engine will be cast at Plant
Landshut's aluminium foundry and further processed in Steyr. The
inverter will be produced in a new in-house clean-room environment,
marking the Austrian engine manufacturer’s entry into the field of
electrical engineering. E-drive components from Steyr will be
assembled on two new lines. The overall production concept for the
Gen6 e-drive follows the principle of a modular system, making it
possible to produce different highly flexible electric drive train
derivatives for the entire range of Neue Klasse models. The modular
concept generates positive economies of scale and cost savings in both
development and production. It also improves the scalability of
production volumes and keeps production, supply networks and
  procurement highly flexible.

  Comprehensive improvements to electric engine

The electric engine has undergone significant further development for
Gen6: The rotor, stator and inverter have all been holistically
designed for the Gen6 technology’s new 800-volt architecture,
maximising performance capabilities and the efficiency of the drive
system. In the inverter, 800-volt technology and silicon carbide (SiC)
semiconductor technology are now being used to boost efficiency. Fully
integrated into the electric engine housing, the inverter converts
direct current from the high-voltage battery into alternating current
  for the electric engine.

Lower weight, costs and energy loss lead to greater vehicle efficiency

Overall, the intelligent use of new technologies in the e-drive and
systematic further development of existing systems produce remarkable
results. Comparing the future BMW iX3 50 xDrive with a Gen5 xDrive
model shows the following improvements in the electric engine: “Energy
loss is reduced by 40 percent, costs by 20 percent and weight by 10
percent. All this makes a significant contribution to the
approximately 20-percent increase in overall vehicle efficiency”,
explains Martin Kaufmann, SVP of global Powertrain Development at BMW
AG. The efficient design of the powertrain together with the high
energy content of the high-voltage battery, enable a range of up to
800 km (WLTP) in the BMW iX3 50 xDrive, the first model of the Neue Klasse.
Includes a $100 Million Investment in a New One Million Square
Foot Facility +++ Training center to be completed in summer 2022 +++
More than 11.4 billion US dollars total investment in the site since 1992.

Spartanburg, S.C. BMW Manufacturing announced that
it will expand its logistics operations to a new building . Total
investment in the new building is approximately $100 million. When
completed, the new logistics center will be nearly one million square
feet in size with an opportunity for future expansion.

“For nearly three decades, BMW has called South Carolina its second
home. This expansion in our logistics operation represents our
continued commitment to this state, and it will prepare Plant
Spartanburg for the future,” said Dr. Robert Engelhorn, president and
CEO of BMW Manufacturing. “The new warehouse will allow us to
consolidate our logistics processes as well as implement efficiency
measures for a more sustainable logistics operation.”

When the new logistics center opens in the middle of 2022, it will
allow BMW to consolidate two offsite warehouse operations – one for
returnable containers and another for body shop parts – into one
efficient onsite location. Inside the warehouse, shipments from
suppliers will be sorted, then delivered to their respective Plant
Spartanburg technologies. The result is a faster, leaner, more
  efficient supply chain.

To minimize the impact of truck traffic in the area and allow for
easy access to BMW, two private bridges will be constructed to connect
the logistics center to the BMW campus.

Update on New BMW Training Center

Construction is well underway on the new $20 million, 67,000 square
foot training center on the BMW campus, which was announced in
February. When completed in the summer of 2022, the building will
feature multiple classrooms for both professional development and
technical training, an outdoor amphitheater, and a unique concept of
outdoor meeting and workspace that includes wireless capabilities. The
training center will also be home to BMW’s well-known apprenticeship
  program – BMW Scholars.

Since 1992, the BMW Group has invested more than $11.4 billion in its
South Carolina factory. BMW Group Plant Spartanburg is the largest BMW
Group plant in the world, producing more than 1,500 vehicles each day.
The plant exports more than two-thirds of its models to 125 global
markets. For seven consecutive years, it has been the largest exporter
by value in the United States. The model portfolio includes five
top-selling BMW X models, four Motorsport X models, and two plug-in
hybrid electric X models. The factory has a production capacity of up
to 450,000 vehicles and employs more than 11,000 people.

Extensive in-house drive train expertise: Start of production for
    fifth-generation high-voltage batteries in Germany

Successful transformation to e-drive train production

  Munich/Dingolfing. Production of fifth-generation
high-voltage batteries and battery modules for use in the BMW iX* and
BMW i4 is now underway at the Competence Centre for E-Drive Production
in Dingolfing. At the same time, the company is also increasing
production capacity for its fifth-generation electric motor, which has
been built in Dingolfing for the BMW iX3* since 2020 and will also
power the BMW iX* and BMW i4. “We expect at least 50 percent of the
vehicles we deliver to our customers worldwide to be electrified by
2030. To achieve this, we are relying on our extensive in-house drive
train expertise: We are increasing capacity at existing drive train
production locations – like here in Dingolfing – and developing
capabilities at others – like recently in Regensburg and Leipzig,”
explained Dr Michael Nikolaides, Senior Vice President, Production
  Engines and E-Drives, BMW Group.

The BMW Group is investing more than 500 million euros in expanding
production capacity for e-drives at its Dingolfing location alone
between 2020 and 2022. From 2022, it will produce e-drives for more
than half a million electrified vehicles. The BMW Group will invest a
total of around 790 million euros in expanding capacity for electric
powertrain components at its Dingolfing, Leipzig, Regensburg and Steyr
  locations between 2020 and 2022.

Standard production of the BMW iX* will soon get underway at BMW
Group Plant Dingolfing, followed by production of the BMW i4 at Plant
Munich in the autumn. The highly integrated e-drives and high-voltage
batteries for these vehicles will all be manufactured at the
Competence Centre for E-Drive Production in Dingolfing. The BMW Group
already began producing battery components at Plants Regensburg and
Leipzig in April and May 2021. In line with growing demand for
e-drives, BMW Group Plants Landshut and Steyr are also stepping up
  production of e-drive housings.

Production of fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology

The output and energy content of drive units and high-voltage
batteries with fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology can be flexibly
scaled. This means they can be optimally adjusted to suit different
  model variants.

Each vehicle uses up to two highly integrated e-drives, which combine
the electric motor, power electronics and transmission in a single
housing. Based on the design principle of a current-excited rotor, the
fifth-generation e-drive does not require any materials classified as
  rare-earth metals.

BMW eDrive technology also comprises a high-voltage battery with
state-of-the-art battery cell technology. The BMW Group agreed with
its suppliers that they will only use renewable green power for
producing fifth-generation battery cells. The entire high-voltage
battery boasts outstanding qualities in the areas of performance,
charging and discharging characteristics, durability and safety. The
technically standardised production process for battery modules has
been further developed in such a way that different module variants
can be produced on the same production line – in line with the growing
range of electrified vehicle models and performance levels. The
production systems are highly flexible and scalable. Battery modules
are produced from supplied prismatic battery cells at the respective
BMW Group production location. A modular system developed in-house
allows model-specific high-voltage batteries to be manufactured from
these modules in a flexible arrangement.

The company has outstanding expertise and experience, both in the
field of battery cell technology and in production of model-specific
high-voltage batteries. The BMW Group conducts basic research in the
fields of cell chemistry and cell design at its own Battery Cell
Competence Centre. The BMW Group also produces battery cell prototypes
itself. These battery cell prototypes are used in tests to validate
the development maturity of battery cells and to demonstrate the
effectiveness of the production processes. In addition, the prototype
production of the battery cells serves the identification of process
potentials as well as the optimization of the production processes. In
this way, the BMW Group gains a thorough understanding of the entire
battery cell value chain and the decisive competitive advantages its
chemical and technical properties offer. This enables battery cells to
be manufactured to precise specifications that are geared towards each
  vehicle’s individual requirements.

  Competence Centre for E-Drive Production

Following extensive expansion, the Competence Centre for E-Drive
Production now provides a usable area of 125,000 sq. m. This is where
the company manufactures electric motors and the components needed for
them, as well as high-voltage batteries and battery modules. A paint
coating is also applied to the battery cells at this location. The
coating increases mechanical robustness and thermal conductivity,
thereby improving insulation and cooling of the even more powerful
  fifth-generation battery cells.

Plant Dingolfing has been manufacturing standard high-voltage
batteries and battery modules since 2013, when the BMW Group's first
all-electric vehicle, the BMW i3*, went into production. The first
production lines for electric motors and high-voltage batteries for
plug-in hybrids went on-stream there in 2014. The Competence Centre
for E-Drive Production has been steadily growing ever since. The plant
has also been producing high-voltage batteries for the fully electric
MINI Cooper SE* since 2019 and, since 2020, also the highly integrated
fifth-generation e-drive used for the first time in the BMW iX3*.
Production of the even more powerful high-voltage batteries for the
BMW iX* and BMW i4 is now getting underway. E-drives for future models
can also be produced on the flexible production lines.

  Qualification for long-term, sustainable jobs

With the BMW Group systematically pursuing progress in
electromobility, the demands on employees and their areas of
responsibility are also constantly evolving. “We are growing our staff
for e-drive production almost exclusively through personnel
restructuring. We are actively shaping the transformation process and
leveraging our employees’ skills so we can develop long-term
  sustainable jobs,” explains Nikolaides.

The Competence Centre for E-Drive Production in Dingolfing currently
has almost 1,400 employees. By the end of 2021, around 1,900 employees
are expected to work in e-drive production in Dingolfing.

Production employees receive further training at the in-house
learning centre, which uses innovative vocational training and further
education methods to provide employees with intensive preparation for
their new tasks. Employees’ knowledge and skills are being expanded
specifically to include new electromobility technologies, with a
training concept that is constantly updated. The training sessions are
held in the classroom, at practice workstations and directly on the
production lines. Digital methods and augmented reality play a bigger
role here than ever before. Thanks to these methods, the training
courses were also able to continue safely during the coronavirus
pandemic, in compliance with health and safety measures.

“The learning centre takes a holistic approach that supports
employees throughout their professional development and further
education, from their first day in production,” reports Dr Sven
Jochmann, head of Production E-Drives Dingolfing, Landshut,
Regensburg, Leipzig. “As well as trainers and managers, new colleagues
are also supported by trained mentors who help them quickly find their
way around their new working environment,” adds Jochmann.

  Transformation of the Dingolfing location

The Dingolfing location is a prime example of the successful
transformation of the BMW Group plants towards e-mobility and
digitalisation. E-drive production, including electric motors and
high-voltage batteries, is located in an existing, roughly 50-year-old
building at the site, rather than using new space. The infrastructure
was adapted to the new requirements and expanded accordingly. A modern
staff restaurant seats 300 and there is also a new parking deck with
space for 800 vehicles. The structural measures are rounded out by a
25,000 sq. m. logistics hall, new office spaces and social rooms close
to the production area, as well as an additional plant gate in the
  south for improved logistics flows.

On the issue of sustainability, the BMW Group takes a holistic
approach to reducing CO2 emissions and minimising resource
consumption that covers the entire value chain, including in-house
production, the supply chain and use phase. In Dingolfing, as at all
BMW Group locations, production uses only green power. In addition,
all BMW Group locations have been net carbon neutral since this year,
through corresponding offsets and certificates. The company is also
using many other levers: from building technology to energy-efficient
installations to increased use of renewable energies. Electric trucks
will be used for intra-company goods transport at the Competence
Centre for E-Drive Production from the autumn.

2030: At least 50 percent of global BMW Group sales will be
    fully electric

The BMW Group continues its massive electromobility ramp-up: The
company will offer five fully-electric models by the end of this year:
the BMW i3*, the MINI Cooper SE* and the BMW iX3*, as well as the two
main innovation flagships, the BMW iX* and BMW i4.

Between now and 2025, the BMW Group will increase its sales of
fully-electric models by an average of well over 50 percent per year –
more than ten times the number of units sold in 2020. Based on its
current market forecast, the company also expects at least 50 percent
of its global sales to come from fully-electric vehicles in 2030. In
total, over the next ten years or so, the BMW Group will be releasing
about ten million fully-electric vehicles onto the roads.

Global e-drive production network with a focus in Germany

The high-voltage batteries and battery components needed for all BMW
and MINI electrified vehicles come from the company’s own battery
factories in Dingolfing, Leipzig and Regensburg in Germany, as well as
from Spartanburg (USA) and Shenyang (China). The BMW Group has also
localised production of high-voltage batteries in Thailand, at its
Rayong plant, and is working with the Dräxlmaier Group for this.
Munich is home to the e-drive pilot plant and the Battery Cell
Competence Centre, where the BMW Group is conducting a full analysis
of battery cell value creation processes and advancing technology for
  its production processes.

The company produces electric motors at the Competence Centre for
E-Drive Production in Dingolfing and at BMW Group Plant Landshut. BMW
Group Plant Steyr builds the housing for the highly integrated
  fifth-generation e-drive.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

BMW iX xDrive50: Power consumption combined: < 21 kWh/100 km in

Munich. The BMW Group breaks new ground in the field
of logistics as it founds IDEALworks GmbH – a fully-owned subsidiary
headquartered in Munich. The aim is to become a leading supplier of
autonomous robotics solutions in the logistics sector. The name
  "IDEAL" stands for Industry
    Driven Engineering for
  Autonomous Logistics.

“In founding IDEALworks, we are creating a new business segment for
our logistics solutions. In recent years, our logistics innovation
team has been working in depth on the digitalization and
automatization of production logistics and has developed some unique
solutions. The Smart Transport Robot, STR, in particular has met with
great response and has seen demand from both within and outside of the
BMW Group. Founding IDEALworks GmbH is now the logical next step for
the BMW Group as a driver of innovation,” explained Milan Nedeljković,
the member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for
  Production, to mark its foundation.

“We are entering completely new terrain with IDEALworks GmbH. Up
until now, our development has focused on automotive production and
its logistics,” said Jimmy Nassif, CTO IDEALworks GmbH. He continued:
“Our perspective is changing now. We are becoming a provider of
logistics robotics beyond the automotive industry. We are preparing
some innovations for the coming months."

Since 2015, the innovations team from BMW Group Logistics has
been working on future-focused industry 4.0 solutions in the fields of
virtual reality, augmented reality, in- and outdoor logistics robots,
paperless logistics and smart devices. Many of these solutions are
already in series production at BMW Group production locations. In
2019, BMW Group Logistics received the prestigious Deutscher Logistik
Preis [German Logistics Award]. The Smart Transport Robot and its
management software were also recognized as part of this award.

IDEALworks GmbH launches its first product with the Smart
    Transport Robot

The Smart Transport Robot, STR, was developed in 2015 in
collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute. The flat, autonomous and
mobile robots can transport goods weighing up to one ton to their
destination. They independently calculate the best route and move
freely around the space using the SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and
Mapping) navigation method. The SLAM algorithm does not require
permanent navigation transmitters to be installed in buildings and can
therefore be set up quickly in a new environment without requiring any
structural adjustments. An integrated battery module from the BMW i3
is able to supply the STR with power for at least an entire shift. The
next generation of the STR will be rolled out at the end of 2020.
Currently, more than 130 STRs are already in series production at
several different BMW Group production sites.

Successful pilot projects in the non-automotive sector

"With the Smart Transport Robot, we have launched a highly
competitive product. From October onwards, we have been carrying out
pilot projects at companies from a wide range of industries. These
trials show just how robust and versatile the STR is," explained
Markus Bauer, COO IDEALworks GmbH. "The success of the pilot
project and the resulting demand for the STR were decisive in founding
IDEALworks GmbH. We want to develop IDEALworks into a top player among
the providers of industrial logistics robots in the long term,"
  Bauer continued.

The new company IDEALworks GmbH is located in Munich.

In its initial phase, the team consists of around 30 experts from a
wide range of fields and nationalities.

Munich. At BMW Group Plant Munich, everything is in
place for production of the fully electric BMW i4 to begin. After six
weeks of intensive conversion work, series production of vehicles has
resumed, with around 5,000 associates returning to the line. “We have
completed the comprehensive restructuring and conversion of the plant
successfully, on schedule and without complications,” said Plant
Director Robert Engelhorn. At the BMW Group’s home plant, a new era is
about to begin: “Our plant can now manufacture the fully electric BMW
i4 on the same line as diesel-, petrol- and hybrid-powered vehicles,”
  Engelhorn added.

“Outstanding planning and preparation, and perfect collaboration
between the many in-house and external partners meant we were able to
ready BMW Group Plant Munich for the mobility concepts of the future
in the space of just six weeks,” Engelhorn reported. The entire
development and conversion of the plant came at an investment of
around €200 million. Approx. €700 million had already been invested
between 2015 and 2018 to install a new, resource-efficient paintshop
and extend the bodyshop for production of the BMW 3 Series.

In recent weeks, a particular challenge facing the team was the
confined space within the production halls, which made conversion and
installation work difficult. Previous systems had to be removed with
very little space to spare, and new ones installed and launched.
Before conversion work began, plans were made with the help of digital
tools that simulated the line sections, system designs and production
processes by virtual reality. “This allowed us to make the best
possible use of the limited space available in our plant, and to see
exactly which processes needed adjusting,” Engelhorn explained. Much
of the expertise for the upgrade came from production workers
themselves, who used VR goggles to obtain a clear picture of what
their stage of work would look like, and offered valuable feedback on
  ergonomics and process optimisation.

The bodyshop at Plant Munich is a shining example of smart,
efficient integration, as the majority of production processes for the
BMW i4 can be carried out on existing bodyshop systems. Additional
systems were required merely for the floor assembly and rear section
of the BMW i4, as the electric drive and high-voltage battery mean
these are quite different from conventional architectures. The approx.
550-kilogram battery pack will be fitted to the body by a new, fully
automated battery assembly system, which uses camera systems to check
automatically if the battery pack is positioned correctly on the line.
The battery pack is also transported to the line and bolted to the
  body fully automatically.

A new electric overhead conveyor has also been installed for BMW
i4 production, along with stronger conveyors in the vehicle finish
area. “This has been the most comprehensive overhaul of assembly in
the history of Plant Munich,” Robert Engelhorn pointed out.

As the number of driver assistance systems, safety equipment and
connectivity features steadily increases, function-testing of the
various in-car innovations and technologies during production is
becoming more and more complex. To meet the ever tougher quality
requirements, Plant Munich is making greater use of digitally
connected production and testing systems. Complex logistics and
production processes are also supported by myriad digitalisation
  solutions and interconnected smart systems.

During the conversion of Plant Munich over recent weeks, the
focus was very much on integrating the BMW i4 into existing production
systems. But systems and processes were also prepared for series
production of the BMW M3, which will be manufactured on the same line
as well. Established back in 1922, the BMW Group’s home plant is now
set to deliver a wide-ranging product portfolio that includes not only
the BMW i4 but also the combustion- and hybrid-powered BMW 3 Series
Sedan and BMW 3 Series Touring, and the new BMW M3.

The tremendous flexibility of the plant and the extraordinary
skills of the team are impressive.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Locations,Production,Production Plants

Munich/Shenyang. The BMW Group is systematically
pursuing its electrification strategy and will release the new BMW iX3
onto the market by the end of 2020. Standard production of the BMW
core brand’s first pure electric model will get underway at the BMW
Brilliance Automotive joint venture (BBA) in China in late summer as
planned: BBA Plant Dadong will produce the first Sports Activity
Vehicle (SAV) with a pure electric drive train for the global market.
The first of these electric vehicles will be delivered to customers by
  the end of the year.

The testing required for homologation of the new BMW iX3 has now been
successfully completed and the results submitted to the regulatory
authorities in key automotive markets. “This is the first time we have
completed the entire homologation process for a fully electric model
in China and Europe at the same time. The staff on our testing team
mastered this unique challenge with tremendous dedication and
efficiency,” said Arno Keller, head of Development BMW iX3. More than
340 hours of testing, including over 7700 kilometres of test drives,
had to be completed within four weeks.

Preparations for production of the BMW iX3 were stepped up in
Shenyang in parallel. BBA has been building BMW iX3 pre-production
vehicles at Plant Dadong in Shenyang since the middle of last year.
The 200th pre-production model recently came off the assembly line and
test drives on Chinese roads began – allowing development and test
  engineers to make final adjustments.

“We are right on schedule with our BMW iX3 pre-production vehicles
and will launch standard production in late summer, using
state-of-the-art technologies such as custom installation of the new
high-voltage battery and artificial intelligence for monitoring
parts,” explained Robert Küssel, BBA Plant Director Dadong. “We are
also producing the fully-electric BMW iX3 and the BMW X3 with
combustion engine on the same production line. This enables us to
achieve high efficiency and flexibility in production,” Küssel continued.

With the new BMW iX3, the BMW Group is adding another fully-electric
vehicle to its portfolio that will not only tap into new customer
groups, but also arrives on the market at a time when demand for
electric vehicles is expanding significantly. The electric car is
based on the globally successful BMW X3 and combines the versatility
and robust functionality of a premium mid-size Sports Activity Vehicle
with ground-breaking drive technology for locally emission-free
driving pleasure. The BMW X3 is the brand’s first model available with
both conventional petrol and diesel engines, a plug-in hybrid system
or a pure electric drive train. This “Power of Choice” approach allows
the company to respond to the different needs and wants of its
customers worldwide and maximise its impact in reducing global CO2 emissions.

The BMW iX3 already comes with fifth-generation BMW eDrive
technology, including a drive unit with the electric engine, power
electronics and transmission highly integrated into a central housing.
This significantly reduces the installation space and mass of the
drive technology relative to output and offers added flexibility for
installing new electric powertrain components in different vehicle
derivatives. A further highlight is the electric motor, which no
longer requires the use of rare earths and ensures the BMW Group is
  not depend on their availability.

The fifth-generation electric drive train also includes new and more
powerful high-voltage batteries. Thanks to their scalable, modular
design, these can be used flexibly in the respective vehicle
architecture and at the respective production locations.

With a range of around 440 kilometres in the WLTP test cycle
(preliminary data), the BMW iX3 paves the way for BMW eDrive
technology, which will also be used in BMW i4 and BMW iNEXT models
  from 2021 on.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Locations,Drive Technologies,Production Plants,G08,iX3,Industry 4.0,Product,BMW

Spartanburg/ Munich. BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in
the US state of South Carolina has doubled its capacity for production
of high-voltage batteries. The plant’s own battery facility now
produces the new fourth-generation batteries. These are intended for
the plug-in hybrid models of the new BMW X5 and the future BMW X3,
  also produced in Spartanburg.

“We have invested around ten million US
dollars in a new battery assembly line and expanded the area to more
than 8,000 square metres. This means we could double the number of
batteries produced if needed to meet market demand,” explains Michael
Nikolaides, Senior Vice President Engines and Electrified Drivetrains,
  BMW Group.

The new assembly line will be able to produce different types of
fourth-generation batteries to serve the growing range of electrified
vehicles locally. These batteries are based on a new technology
concept that further enhances their performance.

More than 120 people will be employed in battery production at Plant
Spartanburg by the end of the year, having completed a comprehensive
training programme to acquire the technological know-how needed for
  battery production.

“We have produced batteries on site at
Plant Spartanburg since 2015 – making the BMW Group a pioneer for
electromobility in the US,” says Knudt Flor, President and CEO, BMW
Manufacturing, Co., LLC. In the past four years, the plant’s battery
assembly team has produced a total of more than 45,000 batteries.

Further investment in production of BMW X5 and BMW X3 plug-in hybrids

Between 2015 and 2018, BMW Group Plant Spartanburg built the first
series produced plug-in hybrid vehicle, the BMW X5 xDrive40e (combined
fuel consumption: 3,3 l/100km; combined power consumption: 15,3
  kWh/100km ; combined CO2-emission: 77 g/km), for the core BMW brand.
The start of production for the new BMW X5 xDrive45e (combined fuel
  consumption: 2,0-1,7 l/100km*; combined power consumption: 23,5-20,3
  kWh/100km*; combined CO2-emission: 47-39 g/km*) will be in August
2019; production of the BMW X3 xDrive30e (combined fuel consumption:
  from 2,4 l/100 km*; combined power consumption: from 22,7 kWh/100 km*;
combined CO2-emission: from 56 g/km*; provisional figures) will get
  underway in December.

“The BMW X5 and BMW X3 are currently among the top-selling BMW models
in the US. We expect their plug-in hybrid variants to be just as
  popular with customers,” adds Flor.

Since the start of the year, the BMW Group has invested a further ten
million US dollars in production of plug-in hybrid models. An
additional 225 vehicle assembly workers received training in the
production of electrified vehicles, adding to the Plant’s already
  skilled staff.

  International production network for batteries

The BMW Group currently has three battery facilities: at the
Competence Centre for E-drive Production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing
in Germany, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the US and at Plant
Powertrain of its joint venture, BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA). The
BMW Group also produces batteries for local car production in
cooperation with a partner in Thailand. The BMW Group’s battery
research and pilot plant are located in Munich.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

San Luis Potosi/Munich. High-level representatives of
the Mexican government and the BMW Group officially opened the
company’s new automotive plant in San Luis Potosi in Mexico today.

Oliver Zipse, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible
for Production, stated during the ceremony: “The new plant in San Luis
Potosi is an important pillar of the BMW Group’s global production
strategy. We aim to achieve a balance in our production and sales in
the different world regions. We want to strengthen our footprint in
important and growing markets. Plant San Luis Potosi will
significantly boost our regional production flexibility in the
Americas. From here, we are delivering our locally produced BMW 3
  Series Sedan to customers worldwide.”

The company has invested more than one billion US dollars in the new
production location. The plant, which already employs 2,500 people,
will have a capacity of up to 175,000 units per year once the ramp-up
  phase is fully completed.

San Luis Potosi will build the BMW brand’s most successful model
series: the BMW 3 Series Sedan. In the company’s more than 100-year
history, this iconic car has come to represent the heart of the brand,
setting the standard for dynamic performance, efficiency and design.

The ceremony in San Luis Potosi was attended by guests including Dr.
Alfonso Romo Garza, Head of the Office of the Presidency of the
Mexican Republic; Dr Juan Manuel Carreras López, governor of the state
of San Luis Potosi; Oliver Zipse, member of the Board of Management of
BMW AG responsible for Production; Milagros Caiña-Andree, member of
the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Human Resources and
Labour Relations, and Dr Andreas Wendt, member of the Board of
Management of BMW AG responsible for Purchasing and Supplier Network.

Head of Human Resources Milagros Caiña-Andree highlighted the BMW
Group’s strong commitment to vocational education: “Our highly-trained
employees form a strong foundation for our new BMW Group Plant San
Luis Potosi and help us meet high quality standards for our premium
products. Our dual vocational training programme is already in its
  fourth generation.”

At an innovative new training centre on the plant grounds, all new
staff and apprentices are trained in the BMW Group’s latest production
processes and technologies, based on the dual vocational training
model. The centre is not just focused on expanding employees’ and
apprentices’ technical skills, but also boosting motivation,
  enthusiasm and team spirit.

The plant is working with four technical institutes in this area and
has already trained 250 apprentices in technical occupations.

Dr Andreas Wendt, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG
responsible for Purchasing and Supplier Network: “We have a strong
supplier base we can build on in Mexico, having sourced high-quality,
technologically sophisticated and innovative products from here for
more than ten years. Every BMW Group vehicle today already contains at
least one part from one of our 220 Mexican suppliers. Our new plant
will benefit from short supply routes and the high level of
flexibility this gives our supply chain.”

The BMW Group has operated its own local purchasing office in Mexico
since 2008. In 2017, the office relocated from Mexico City to San Luis
Potosi, where it now employs 105 people. The BMW Group’s purchasing
volume in Mexico reached USD 2.5 billion last year.

Focus on flexibility, digitalisation and sustainability

Hermann Bohrer, director of the Mexican plant: “The plant was
designed from the start to allow us to respond quickly and flexibly to
future model variants and production volumes. We use innovative
Industry 4.0 technologies, including new automation solutions and
modern assistance systems. Sustainability was also a major focus from
the beginning – and we are setting new standards in this area.”

  Latest Industry 4.0 technologies

The BMW Group used digital 3D plans during construction of the plant,
both for the building itself and for the installation of equipment.
During every phase of construction, architects entered specific
information, such as location, dimensions and completion date into
digital models. Digital 3D-scanning technology was also used during
construction for the first time. Combining these two technologies
allowed for real-time analysis of construction progress and
cost-efficient modifications, providing the BMW Group with continuous
  planning reliability.

The new BMW Group plant is a pioneer in the field of intelligent
maintenance. Smart Maintenance Assistant Software is being used for
the first time, enabling proactive maintenance throughout the plant to
be planned ahead of time, thereby increasing equipment availability.
Service activities are based on current, intelligently organised
system data instead of predefined maintenance intervals. Using smart
devices such as tablets and smartphones, staff receive all relevant
  information regarding equipment status.

Various Industry 4.0 technologies are used, for example, in assembly,
where screens have largely replaced paper throughout the assembly
process. Two screens per takt provide staff with all the information
they need – information which, in the past, was only available on
paper. This digital job card is being used for the first time at the
  BMW Group plant in Mexico.

Robots and employees work directly alongside one another in engine
pre-assembly, cooperating in a way which plays to the strengths of
each. Robots have the power to turn the heavy convertor, while the
employees have the manual dexterity to make the final adjustments to
  fit them together precisely.

  New sustainability benchmarks

From the first full year of production, the facility in San Luis
Potosi will be the BMW Group’s most resource-efficient plant.

Careful use of water resources is a primary sustainability objective.
The site, with the production network’s lowest water consumption per
vehicle produced, will be the BMW Group’s first paint shop to generate
no process wastewater at all. The water needed for the painting
  process is reconditioned and reused.

The use of renewable energy sources ensures that the plant will be
supplied with 100% CO2-free electricity in future. A solar energy
plant on-site, covering an area of more than 70,000 m2,
will produce part of the energy.

  Production for the global market

The new plant in Mexico expands the BMW Group production network to a
total of 31 locations. In line with the BMW Group’s Strategy NUMBER
ONE > NEXT, this ensures the company has a flexible and efficient
international production network, with a good balance of value
creation between Europe, Asia and the Americas.

The new location in Mexico is another building block in this growth
strategy. The country is a member of the NAFTA free-trade area with
Canada and the United States. It also has a large number of free-trade
agreements, including with the European Union and MERCOSUR, which make
it easier to export cars and import supplied parts.

The NAFTA region in particular, with its consistently high sales
volumes, is a key market for the BMW Group. Twenty five years ago, the
BMW Group opened its plant in Spartanburg, USA, and has since invested
nearly nine billion US dollars in the site. The company will invest a
further 600 million US dollars there by 2021 to gear it up for future
generations of the BMW X models. The number of jobs will increase in
parallel to around 11,000. In total, the company supports almost
70,000 direct and indirect jobs in the US.

  The BMW Group in Mexico

The BMW Group sales company in Mexico is celebrating its
25th anniversary this year. The local sales company is not
only responsible for the Mexican market, but also manages the
company’s business strategy for the whole Latin America region,
covering a total of 28 countries. Delivering continuous growth, Mexico
is the most important market in this region.

In 2018, the BMW Group sold a total of 25,090 vehicles (18,501 BMW,
6,589 MINI) in Mexico – an increase of more than 13% over the previous year.

Presentation of the BMW X7 at the end of 2018.</pp:summary>

Munich / Spartanburg. Production of the first
pre-production models of the new BMW X7 Sports Activity Vehicle has
commenced at the BMW Group Spartanburg plant, USA. So the countdown
has started for the final twelve months leading up to the presentation
of the production car at the end of 2018. Prior to this, the vehicle
will undergo various tests under partially extreme conditions.

Knudt Flor, head of the BMW Group Spartanburg plant: “We are proud to
produce the BMW X7 here in Spartanburg, the home of our X models. This
is a very special vehicle and our employees are looking forward to yet
a further member of the X family. Together with the BMW X7, a total of
five BMW X models will be exported from Spartanburg to all four
  corners of the globe.”

Camouflage wrap conceals final look.
At the plant, the
production of pre-series models serves to secure and optimise future
series production. Consequently, BMW X7 pre-production models already
use the same assembly line as the BMW X5 and BMW X6 production models.
An especially trained team realises the series production process for
new vehicle models at the plant and qualifies employees for future
  series production.

The pre-production models built at the BMW Group Spartanburg plant
are handed over to development department specialists, who require
them for homologation, registration as well as for diverse testing
purposes such as endurance tests and test drives under extreme
conditions in the desert regions of Death Valley or on the ice and
  snow covered slopes of Scandinavia.

The pre-production model is fitted with its camouflage wrap while
still at the plant. The conspicuous striped patterns are designed to
help conceal the new SAV’s final look as far as possible.

Fifth series from the BMW Group Spartanburg plant.
In Spartanburg, the BMW Group produces BMW X models for
the USA and the global market.
With record production figures of
more than 411,000 units in 2016, Spartanburg is currently the BMW
Group’s largest plant worldwide. Around 70 percent of the vehicles
produced in Spartanburg are exported to 140 countries throughout the
world. According to the US Ministry of Trade, the BMW Group is
therefore the largest vehicle exporter in the USA measured in export
value. Maximum annual production capacity stands at around 450,000 vehicles.

The BMW Group Spartanburg plant employs more than 9,000 people; a
further 1,000 jobs are to be added by the year 2021. Each day, 1,400
BMW X3, X4, X5 and X6 models come off the assembly line at the
Spartanburg plant; these will be complemented by a fifth series, the
BMW X7, for which the Spartanburg plant is currently preparing.

To date, the BMW Group has invested eight billion US dollars in the
production location and has built around 3.9 million vehicles since
being taken into operation on 8 September 1994.

Knudt Flor, President and CEO of BMW Manufacturing Co

Governor McMaster,

Senator Graham,

Ambassador Wittig,

Distinguished Guests,

BMW Associates,

Good morning and welcome to BMW Plant Spartanburg!

Each and every one of you here today is important to the United
States, the state of South Carolina and to Plant Spartanburg, so I
would like to begin by taking a moment to recognize all elected
officials. Please be kind enough to stand for us so you may be
acknowledged. On behalf of the BMW Group, I would like to thank you
for twenty-five years of continued support and personal commitment to
  this plant’s success. Thank you!

Governor McMaster, thank you for your continued efforts in promoting
this partnership, as many governors – especially the late Governor
Carroll Campbell - before you have done. We’d also like to say a
special “thank you” to Bobby Hitt, the Secretary of Commerce, who has
been instrumental in the tremendous growth of Plant Spartanburg.

From the BMW Group, I would like to introduce Mr. Harald Krueger,
Chairman of the Board of Management, and Mr. Oliver Zipse, Member of
the Board of Management, responsible for Production worldwide. We
welcome the national and international press, as we celebrate 25 Years
Spartanburg and the All-New BMW X3!

Also, please join me in welcoming our valued dealers and suppliers
from the U.S., our managers from Munich, and last, but certainly not
least, I am delighted to welcome all of our associates here on site -
the heart and soul of Plant Spartanburg!

25 years ago, our company reached an historic agreement with local
government to build our first U.S. BMW plant in the great state of
South Carolina. It was the start of something very special - a
wonderful friendship and a new beginning. As BMW’s Chairman, Mr.
Eberhard von Kuenheim stated back in 1992: “Seldom in the history of
our company, has a community extended such a warm welcome to us as
here in Spartanburg, in the state of South Carolina, USA. We have felt
at home here from the first day on.”

In 1994, Spartanburg began operations with 570 associates, under the
motto of “Welcome to the Future”. Today, we are proud to have over
9,000 associates here! Spartanburg has grown to become the largest
plant in the BMW Group’s worldwide production network. That, in
itself, is a very strong statement about our commitment to South
  Carolina and to the U.S.

It is our global competence center for our very successful BMW X
vehicles. Currently, the plant produces X3, X4, X5 and X6 models, as
well as M and hybrid variants. We are looking forward to starting
production of the BMW X7 in late 2018. Today, we are delighted to give
you an exclusive world premiere of the All-New BMW X3. The BMW X3 is
without a doubt, the best vehicle in its segment. More on that shortly!

Of course, the success story of Plant Spartanburg wouldn’t have been
possible without people. People have made and continue to make the difference.

We are proud of the people who work here – they are highly skilled
and dedicated to building premium quality vehicles for our customers.
I am proud to be the leader of such an incredible team at such a
remarkable time. World class products are built here every single day.
It’s thanks to you, our associates that BMW feels very much at home
  here in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

We are honored to have so many friends here and immensely proud to
call South Carolina “our home away from home”. It is our goal, and our
commitment, to remain a strong and reliable partner for our
associates, our customers, South Carolina, and the United States.

Of course, a picture is worth a thousand words – here’s a film to
remind us of a few highlights from the past 25 years.

Thank you!

Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG

Governor McMaster,

Senator Graham,

Ambassador Wittig,

Honored guests,

It’s great to be back in Plant Spartanburg again!

The film we just saw underscores the BMW Group’s strong commitment

to the United States of America,

to South Carolina,

and to all our associates and partners here in the U.S.

All of this shows that the U.S. is clearly our home away from home.

We are proud to be responsible for around 70,000 jobs in this great
nation – including dealer network and suppliers. The effect of that
employment multiplies to a total of more than 120,000 jobs nationwide.
This is according to a new study from the Moore School of Business at
the University of South Carolina. Furthermore, our purchasing volume
in America is now at 5.7 billion US dollars.

25 years ago, we made a crucial and forward looking decision. We
decided to build our first full production plant outside of Germany in
the U.S. – right here, in South Carolina. The BMW Group’s success in
America would not be possible without the open arms and warm hearts of
the people and elected officials in the great state of South Carolina
  and the surrounding region.

Senator Graham, it is an honor to have you with us here today. We
greatly appreciate your ongoing support over the years.

Our relationship with South Carolina has been built upon decades of
mutual trust and respect – and goes far beyond just building cars.
Governor McMaster, as you have kindly said – we have become part of
the very fabric of this great state. And David Britt, we were deeply
touched by your words when you said: “BMW is the gift that keeps on giving”.

I am extremely proud of the highly skilled people who work here for
the BMW Group. Their passion for excellence ensures that BMW vehicles
built in the U.S. excite and inspire customers all over the world.
Some of my fondest memories are from my time here at the plant as a
manager. Since then, one thing has never changed – the unique spirit
that makes BMW Plant Spartanburg so special: It’s all about People,
  Performance, Passion and Pride.

Today, I would like to thank all of our associates here, at Plant
Spartanburg, for their strong commitment. You bring this plant to life
  – with your work, every single day. Thank you for your outstanding
dedication! I am sure you all would agree that our associates deserve
  a round of applause.

Governor McMaster,

Senator Graham,

World-class people build world-class products. Today, Spartanburg is
our largest plant worldwide. It is the global competence center for
our X family vehicles, including the BMW X3. The BMW X3 is the most
successful vehicle in its segment worldwide. Today, we are very proud
to present you the third generation – “Built by BMW in the U.S. for
  the world”!

About 70% of our production from Spartanburg is exported to more than
140 countries. Thanks to our great, hardworking team here in the U.S.,
BMW was once again the leading U.S. automotive exporter by value in
2016 - a title we hold with pride.

Free trade has made our joint success story in South Carolina and the
U.S. possible. A story, we want to continue, together with all of you.
I firmly believe in free trade and open markets. It is essential for
global businesses and economies around the world to flourish.

Altogether, the BMW Group has invested eight billion US dollars in
Plant Spartanburg to date. I am delighted to say, we are investing a
further 600 million US dollars in our manufacturing infrastructure
here, up to 2021. This is for future generations of our X models. In
the next four years, we will also create 1,000 new jobs, taking our
  workforce here to over 10,000.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Training and qualifying our associates is key to our future success.
We believe in education! That’s why the BMW Group will invest $200
million over the next five years – solely for the training and further
education of associates at Spartanburg. In addition to this, we will
begin to roll out a nationwide training program. We work together with
local universities and colleges to offer a combination of training on
the job and earning a degree. We will keep investing in our people and
in our business in the U.S. This underscores our enduring commitment
to the people of this great state and nation.

Therefore, I remain confident: Our footprint and commitment will
continue to grow – not only in the Great State of South Carolina but
also in the United States in the years to come.

  (Unveiling of new BMW X3)

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The new BMW X3!

I can tell you, it’s really amazing to drive. Over two generations,
the BMW X3 has been delivered to more than 1.5 million customers
worldwide. I’m certain: This new generation will raise the bar even
higher! Thanks to the team in Spartanburg for your great contribution.
“Built by BMW in the U.S. for the world”!

Governor McMaster, Senator Graham, Ambassador Wittig, Oliver, Knudt,
dear Associates – please come and join me on stage.

Munich/Spartanburg. The BMW Group has been a
committed “local player” in the US market for a quarter-century: On 23
June 1992, the BMW Group announced its decision to build its US plant
in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Continuous expansion of the plant with
extensive additions and the decision to build the successful BMW X
models in Spartanburg have made the plant the largest manufacturing
facility in the BMW Group production network within the space of 25
years. During the ceremony to mark the anniversary, the all-new BMW X3
rolled off the production line in Spartanburg. More than 1.5 million
BMW X3 vehicles have been delivered to customers worldwide since it
was first launched at the end of 2003. The new BMW X3 will be launched
  in fall 2017.

Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, stated
at the ceremony: “The BMW Group’s success story in the US would not
have been possible without the open arms and warm hearts of the people
and elected officials in the great state of South Carolina and the
surrounding region. Our relationship with South Carolina has been
built upon decades of professionalism, mutual trust and respect – and
goes far beyond just building great cars.”

The BMW Group has invested eight billion US dollars in the production
location to date and produced around 3.9 million vehicles since going
online on 8 September 1994. “From 2018 to 2021 we will invest further
600 million US dollars in manufacturing infrastructure for future
generations of the BMW X models,” said Harald Krüger. At present, the
plant is getting ready for production of the all-new BMW X7, which
will be launched onto the market in late 2018.

The BMW Group produces BMW X models in Spartanburg for the US and
global markets. With record production of more than 411,000 units in
2016, Spartanburg is the largest BMW Group plant worldwide. Around
1,400 BMW X3, X4, X5, and X6 vehicles come off the assembly line every
working day. Maximum production capacity is 450,000 vehicles per year.

Around 70 percent of the vehicles produced in Spartanburg are
exported to more than 140 countries worldwide. According to the US
Department of Commerce, the BMW Group is the largest vehicle exporter
from the US in terms of monetary value. In 2016, 287,700 BMW vehicles
with a total value of more than 10 billion US dollars were exported
from Spartanburg: 86 percent were shipped from the Port of Charleston,
with the remaining 14 percent dispatched from five other ports in the
  Southeastern United States.

The BMW Group has 235 local suppliers in the US. In 2016, 80 percent
of the BMW Group’s purchasing volume in the NAFTA area originated in
the US. The US is the company’s second-largest purchasing market,
after Germany, and accounts for 5.2 billion euros.

Harald Krüger: “Free trade has made this success story in the US
possible. I firmly believe in free trade and open markets. It is
essential for global businesses and economies around the world to
flourish. We will keep investing in our people and in our business in
the US. Therefore, I remain confident that our footprint and
commitment will continue to grow not only in the great state of South
Carolina, but also in the United States in the years to come.”

The Spartanburg plant employs more than 9,000 people. “By 2021we will
create further 1,000 jobs,” stated Harald Krüger. “Training and
qualifying our associates is key to our future success.” Training at
the plant is based on the German dual apprenticeship training system
that combines classroom learning with practical experience. In the
past ten years, the BMW Group has invested more than 220 million US
dollars in vocational and continued training at its Spartanburg
facility, with another 200 million US dollars planned over the next
five years. The training programs are run in cooperation with local
colleges. The “BMW Scholars” apprenticeship program launched in 2011
is currently preparing around 100 apprentices for their careers within
  the plant.

Munich. Saturday saw the launch of the new BMW 5
Series sedan. At the same time, BMW Welt is devoting an exclusive
special exhibition to the world’s most success business sedan.
Visitors have the opportunity not only to see two models up close but
also to experience the new technical features at interactive stations.
And film fans have the chance to view the new BMW film “The Escape”
and see the actual car used in the film along with several props.

“The Escape” – the new BMW film.

In the latest release from BMW Films, “The Escape”, the new BMW 5
Series sedan plays the leading role. Clive Owen, the Hollywood actor
and cult driver from “The Hire” films, plays a mysterious hired driver
and rising star Dakota Fanning plays Lily, a clone, in an
action-packed short featuring thrilling chase sequences and
breathtaking stunts. From now till February 25, visitors to BMW Welt
have a unique opportunity to experience the original BMW 5 Series
model from the film “The Escape”. Other film props and exclusive
insights into the making of the short make this special exhibition a
one-off experience – and not just for cineastes.

“The Escape” is an homage to the legendary “The Hire” series of BWM
films on its 15th anniversary. A total of eight of those films were
made in two series in 2001 and 2002. Each of the films featured
Hollywood greats both in front of and behind the camera. Playing
alongside Clive Owen as the hired driver, were stars such as Forest
Whitaker, Mickey Rourke, Madonna, Gary Oldman and James Brown. Cult
directors including Guy Ritchie, Ang Lee, David Fincher and Ridley
Scott took the BMW shorts to Hollywood level, which did not go
unnoticed at international film festivals. In addition to the Titanium
Lion in Cannes, “The Hire” won just about every other award for the
  creative arts.

The new BMW 5 Series exhibition.

Sporty, elegant and stylish, the seventh generation of the BMW 5
Series sedan had its market launch worldwide in February 2017. An
unprecedented array of high-tech features and improved handling make
the new BMW 5 sedan an extremely attractive package. The new BMW 5
Series sets new standards in connectivity and driver assistance,
offering BMW customers perfect support in their day-to-day driving.
The dynamic nature of this new premium car is also reflected in the
  exhibition in BMW Welt.

Since the start of February, visitors have been able to inspect the
latest generation of the BMW 5 Series sedan in a special display
opposite the BMW Welt Lifestyle Shop. Multimedia elements are used to
illustrate the innovative key features of the new BMW 5 Series for
visitors, including new controls and displays, the digital BMW
Connected mobility assistant, and the various diver assistance
systems. Various touch screens provide visitors with a comprehensive
insight into the dedication and innovation that has gone into
developing this vehicle. One of the three walls focus on the
multi-sensual experience. Among other things, visitors can find out
about the Ambient Air Package. This package is an optional extra on
the new BMW 5 Series. At the push of a button, the Ambient Air Package
fills the interior of the car with a subtle, pleasant fragrance.
Visitors can test two of the eight available fragrances at the
exhibition. Ambient light creates a relaxed, cozy atmosphere in the
interior, underlining the luxurious feel of the vehicle and serving as
a functional light source. A backlit “5” at the exhibition
demonstrates the variety of lighting options and the moods they create.

The seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series.

With around 7.9 million vehicles sold by the end of 2016, the BMW 5
range is one of BMW’s core series. The sixth generation alone recorded
sales of more than 2.1 million, making it the global leader in the
premium segment of the upper mid-range. The seventh generation of the
new BMW 5 Series has now arrived to defend this lead with an
impressive array of innovative features. Intelligent voice control,
gesture control and a 70 percent larger head-up display in combination
with the networked services of BMW Connected, together with features
such as on-street parking information and remote 3D view are just some
of the many highlights of the new BMW 5 Series sedan.

The new BMW 5 Series sedan will be on show throughout 2017 in the
special exhibition. “The Escape” set will be on display only until the
end of February. On Monday, February 14, the first customer will drive
away their new BMW 5 Series sedan at a BMW Welt handover.

Rijswijk/Munich. As of August 2017, VDL Nedcar in
Born in the Netherlands will begin production of the BMW X1. The move
was jointly announced today by the BMW Group and the VDL Group. VDL
Nedcar will share production of the BMW X1 for the world market with
BMW Group Plant Regensburg. VDL Nedcar has built three MINI models in
Born since 2014.The BMW X1 will be the fourth BMW Group model to roll
off the production lines at VDL Nedcar.

Strong global demand for the BMW X1 requires additional capacity to
supplement production at the BMW Group plant in Regensburg, where the
second generation of this successful model has been manufactured since
July 2015. With eight different models built on a single line,
production volumes at BMW Group Plant Regensburg have risen
significantly in recent years. As a consequence of this successful
growth, the plant will share BMW X1 production with VDL Nedcar. Over
its lifecycle, the main volume of the BMW X1 will still be produced in
  Regensburg, however.

BMW Group Plant Regensburg and VDL Nedcar are partner plants since
early 2014 and have established a close and successful collaboration.
VDL Nedcar has many years of experience manufacturing high-quality
cars and is a trusted and reliable partner for the BMW Group
production network. The involvement of VDL Nedcar as a contract
manufacturer gives the BMW Group the flexibility to respond quickly to
market demand for the BMW X1.

Peter Haug, Marketing Director of BMW Group Netherlands: “In the
Netherlands, demand for BMW X models has been very strong, especially
for the BMW X1. Last year, a total of 1,946 units were registered,
making it the best sales result since the first generation was
launched in 2009. In 2016, no less than 62.2 percent of all X models
sold in the Netherlands (3,131 in total) were BMW X1s, which means
that one in six BMW models sold was a BMW X1.”

  Strong cooperation

Since 2014, VDL Nedcar has produced various MINI models, starting
with the three-door MINI in split production with BMW Group Plant
Oxford. The second model, the MINI Convertible, is exclusively built
in Born. On 2 November 2016, VDL Nedcar also began exclusive
production of the new MINI Countryman. In March 2017, VDL Nedcar will
start production of the new MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4, MINI’s
first plug-in hybrid, and the sporty MINI John Cooper Works Countryman
  with 170 kW (231 hp).

  BMW X models popular worldwide

In 2016, BMW sold a total of 2,003,359 vehicles (an increase of 5.2
per cent compared to 2015), of which 644,922 were X models (an
increase of 22.3 per cent compared to 2015). One in three BMW models
sold in 2016 was an X model.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Research & Development,Locations,X1,Production,Production Plants,F48,Product,BMW

Munich. On Wednesday, precisely 12:08, almost eight
years to the day since it opened, BMW Welt welcomed its 20 millionth
visitor. Dieter Reiter, Mayor of Munich, and Helmut Käs, Head of BMW
Welt, greeted the visibly surprised guests, the Wald family from
Aachen. Visitors from all over the world sent their congratulations in
video messages. On behalf of BMW Welt, the current German Touring Car
Masters (DTM) champion, Marco Wittmann, presented a special prize to
the guests of honor – the keys to a new BMW X1 which Mr. Wald can
  drive for one whole year.

Visitors and employees of BMW Welt witnessed a special occasion when
the unsuspecting guests were welcomed shortly after midday by Helmut
Käs and Dieter Reiter. This was an unforgettable experience for
Christoph Wald, his wife Stefanie and his two children, Alina and
Fabian. "BMW Welt is the shop window of the BMW Group. We are
therefore delighted to welcome our 20 millionth visitors after only
eight years. Our huge popularity among people from Germany and abroad
underlines the attractiveness of the BMW Group and all its
brands", said Helmut Käs, Head of BMW Welt.

Mayor Dieter Reiter and DTM champion Marco Wittmann added
    their congratulations

With more than three million visitors in 2014, BMW Welt is Bavaria's
most visited attraction and occupies a special place in the hearts of
the Munich people, as Dieter Reiter, Mayor of Munich, pointed out in
his speech: "In only a few years, BMW Welt has become a famous
landmark in Munich. It stands for the attractiveness of this modern
city and is contributing to the success of Munich as a tourist destination."

The arrival of the guests of honor was accompanied by fireworks and
congratulations from around the world. Representing all the 20 million
visitors to BMW Welt, the Wald family received a very special
thank-you. Marco Wittmann, the current DTM champion for BMW, surprised
the guests of honor with a new BMW X1 that they can enjoy for one
  whole year.

20 million visitors from all around the world

Since it was officially opened in 2007, BMW Welt has become a real
magnet for visitors in only a few years. Last year, BMW Welt
established a new record with more than three million visitors. That

The anniversary vehicle is a BMW M6 Gran Coupé in Tanzanite Blue metallic.</pp:summary>

Now in its third generation, the BMW 6 Series makes an important
contribution to securing the BMW Group’s success. In 2013 alone,
approx. 26,000 of the large BMW Coupés were delivered to customers
around the world. In March of last year, BMW Plant Dingolfing
celebrated the start of production of the most exclusive way to
experience a BMW M vehicle: the BMW M6 Gran Coupé, the BMW Group’s
  most high-performance, four-door luxury coupe.

The BMW 6 Series has a long tradition at the Dingolfing site: In
summer 1978, the plant started to manufacture the BMW 635 CSi, to be
complemented only a short time later by the BMW M635 CSi. At a top
speed of 255 km/h, this sports coupé made BMW history as the fastest
BMW four-seater model of all times. When the last vehicle of the
initial BMW 6 Series rolled of the Dingolfing assembly line, it was
already clear that the plant would continue the success story of the
large coupes: Later the same year, production of the BMW 850i began.
BMW Plant Dingolfing built this sports coupé for almost ten years on
its own assembly line in Hall 52.

In 2003 – fourteen years after the end of production of the first 6
Series – the successful BMW Coupé made its comeback: With the BMW 645
Ci, Plant Dingolfing begins to make a new generation of large coupés.
Since then, the BMW 6 Series has more than doubled its volume, thanks
to the range of available models, such as the Coupé, the Convertible,
and the Gran Coupé, as well as the M variants.

“Each vehicle represents an individual customer wish. And with this
vehicle, the nine-millionth car made in Dingolfing, we have made your
customer wish come true,” commented Robert Küssel, Head of Assembly at
BMW Plant Dingolfing, when handing over the BMW M6 Gran Coupé on Saturday.

The new BMW Group flagship has only been produced in Dingolfing since
March 2013. Its start of production coincided with that of the BMW 3
Series Gran Turismo, to be followed in March of this year by the BMW 4
Series Gran Coupé. This addition is going to increase the site’s
production program to five model series and 17 individual models.
“Today, our plant is regarded as one of the most flexible production
sites in the global automotive industry,” explained Robert Küssel.

Dirk and Heidi Schulz could see that for themselves on Friday when
they were given a tour through the production areas of BMW Plant
Dingolfing. “I feel very honored to receive the nine-millionth BMW
made in Dingolfing,” stated Dirk Schulz at the handover ceremony. “I
congratulate BMW on this model, which I consider the most beautiful in
  this very versatile production portfolio.”

The Hamburg-based businessman has had close ties with the BMW brand
and Dingolfing for many years: He bought his first BMW in May 1977.
“It was a BMW 5 Series 2.8 liters in white. I bought it just the way
it was showcased at the dealership,” he remembered. From there, he
went on to various 3 and 5 series models, a BMW 750 iL (1997), as well
as a BMW 635 Csi (1988) and a BMW 645 Ci (2004). He also decided to
buy the first Z1 after having seen the respective design study.

It is possible that his new BMW M6 Gran Coupé will soon share the
garage with a BMW i8: “I was fascinated by the design of the BMW
Concept Vision, as the design study for the BMW i8 was called, as much
as by the Z1 back then. This is why, in October 2010, I was one of the
first people in Hamburg, to get an option on the car.”

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Locations,M6,Production Plants,Gran Coupé,Product,BMW M

Munich. From trendsetter to bestseller. Within just
eleven years, one million BMW X5 models have been sold. The
anniversary edition, a sapphire black metallic BMW X5 xDrive35i
featuring cinnamon brown Nevada leather trim, came off the assembly
line at the American BMW plant in Spartanburg/South Carolina today and
is soon to be delivered to a customer in China. Achieving the
seven-digit production figure is a further milestone in the success
story of the first Sports Activity Vehicle. When it premiered in 1999,
the four-wheel driven BMW X5 was the first vehicle of its kind. Since
then, the concept of combining superior dynamics on tarmac with
outstanding traction on off-road terrain, has been a show-stopper
worldwide, whilst also generating crucial impulses for the BMW model
portfolio. With the family of BMW X models, which has meanwhile
grown to comprise a total of four members, the company has recorded
steadily increasing sales figures unmatched by any other manufacturer
  with comparable vehicles.

The BMW X5 remains the symbol and most crucial innovator for the
continuing success of the Sports Activity Vehicle concept. The
spacious five-door car offers up to seven seats, its intelligent
four-wheel drive system BMW xDrive guarantees awesome acceleration,
both on and off road. Permanent, electronically controlled four-wheel
drive technology distributes motive force to the front and rear wheels
variably and according to each specific situation. Furthermore, a
luxurious interior ambience and a wide choice of innovative driver
assistance systems contribute towards the characteristic manifestation
of driving pleasure so typical of a BMW.

Moreover, numerous awards document the outstanding product quality
with regard to design, driving pleasure, safety and reliability. In
2007, the BMW X5 received, inter alia, the design prize
“autonis” awarded by the trade journal “auto motor
und sport“ for the most attractive design, as well as a Gold
Award in the J.D. Power Study on customer satisfaction in North
America. The American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)
voted this Sports Activity Vehicle as the “Top Safety
Pick” for outstanding crash test behaviour both in 2007 and
2008. Current proof of the vehicle’s exceptional reliability is
given by the latest breakdown statistics issued by Europe’s
largest automobile club ADAC, in which the BMW X5 ranks second place
behind the BMW X3 in the all-terrain vehicle category.

Again in 2010, the BMW X5 is more than ever a role model and
benchmark in its class in terms of driving dynamics, efficiency,
variability, premium quality and safety. With a concisely modified
design, a thoroughly revised engine range and additional innovative
equipment features, it continues to extend its lead within the
competitive environment. Its trendsetting qualities include
outstanding efficiency unparalleled in this particular segment. A
prime example of this is the BMW X5 xDrive30d, which is
  powered by a 180 kW/245 bhp straight six-cylinder diesel
engine and achieves an average fuel consumption of 7.4 litres/100 km
  in the EU test cycle.

With its multitude of qualities the BMW X5 has become the most
significant innovator within the entire competitive environment of
four-wheel driven vehicles. At the same time, the premium car builder
has also repeatedly assumed the cutting edge in each respective
segment with the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe, the BMW
X6, and with the compact BMW X1.

The development of the BMW Spartanburg plant is also closely linked
with the success story of the BMW X5. The location, which has existed
for 15 years now, has become the most crucial centre of expertise for
BMW X models within the BMW Group’s global production network.
Built in Spartanburg, the BMW X5 is now exported to more than 120
countries, with the BMW X6 also being produced there for export to the
entire global market. Before the end of this year, production of the
latest BMW X3 generation will commence at this location.

The BMW Group sees
further growth potential in the USA and will therefore expand its
activities in its largest single market. "We will expand the
production capacity of our US plant in Spartanburg in the medium term
from the current 140,000 to well over 200,000 vehicles per annum",
stated Norbert Reithofer, the Chairman of the Board of Management of
BMW AG at the Annual General Meeting held on Tuesday in Munich.
"This is one element of our future strategy. Taking this step will
help to lower our US dollar currency risk", he added. The adverse
impact for the BMW Group from the weak US dollar and Japanese yen in
the last financial year alone totalled euro 666 million. The group
currently manufactures the Z4 and X5 in the USA. The X6, as well as a
possible successor to the X3, are to be built there in the future.
Earnings and sales volume outlook for 2007 reaffirmed The BMW Group
remains on course in terms of the targets it has set for the current
financial year: "Adjusted for the gain on the Rolls-Royce
exchangeable bond, we wish to improve on the record pre-tax profit
result achieved in 2006", Reithofer reaffirmed. All three brands
are also forecast to achieve new sales volume records. The BMW Group
aims to increase sales volume for 2007 in the high single-digit
percentage range to over 1.4 million vehicles. The aim remains to
achieve an annual sales volume of approximately 1.6 million vehicles by
2010. Performance in the first quarter 2007 was influenced by adverse
currency factors, high raw material prices and high start-up costs for
new models. The change in reported earnings was also affected by a
significant "base effect" of euro 375 million, namely the
one-off non-cash gain arising on the partial settlement of the
exchangeable bond on shares in the British aero engine manufacturer,
Rolls-Royce plc. that was recognised in the first quarter 2006. Group
revenues increased by 2.9% to euro 11,951 million (first quarter 2006:
euro 11,618 million). The pre-tax profit fell by 34.3% to euro 852
million (first quarter 2006: euro 1,296 million). Excluding exceptional
items, group earnings fell by only 11.7%. The first-quarter profit
after tax, at euro 587 million, was 38.1% lower than the previous
year's figure of euro 948 million. Despite model changes during the
first three months of the year, the number of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce
brand cars sold edged up by 0.1% to 333,276 units (first quarter 2006:
332,923 unit). The sales volume is expected to rise noticeably in the
coming months thanks to new models. BMW Group achieved record earnings
in 2006 Despite the difficult conditions facing the worldwide
automobile industry, the BMW Group can look back on a successful
financial year 2006, achieving new high levels for sales volume,
revenues and earnings. The number of vehicles sold increased by 3.5% to
1,373,970 units (2005: 1,327,992 units). All three brands headed the
market in their own segments. Thanks to sales volume growth, a more
favourable model sales mix and efficiency improvements, the BMW Group
was again able to a large extent to offset the impact of adverse
exchange rates and high raw material prices amounting to more than euro
1 billion. The profit before tax rose by 25.5% to euro 4,124 million
(2005: euro 3,287 million). This includes the one-time gain on the
exchangeable bond referred to above. At an operating level (i.e.
excluding the exceptional gain), the pre-tax profit improved by 3.0%.
The net profit climbed by 28.4% to reach a new all-time high level of
euro 2,874 million (2005: euro 2,239 million). Earnings per share rose
to euro 4.38 (2005: euro 3.33) per share of common stock and to euro
4.40 (2005: euro 3.35) per share of preferred stock. Group revenues
improved by 5.0% to euro 48,999 million (2005: euro 46,656 million) on
the back of a strong sales volume performance and continued strong
growth in financial services business. Car sales volumes above
previous year's level in virtually all markets The USA continued to be
the market with the largest sales volume for the BMW Group, with a
total of 313,921 cars sold in 2006, up by 2.1% on a year-on-year basis.
A total of 816,829 cars was sold in Europe, 1.7% more than in the
previous year. Germany remained by far the most important European
market. However, due partly to the restricted availability of the MINI,
the sales volume on this market was down by 2.8% to 287,715 vehicles.
The BMW Group recorded its largest growth rates in Asia. The sales
volume there rose by 13.0% to 142,084 units. Japan is the largest
single market for the BMW Group in this region, with the number of cars
handed over to customers up by 5.6% to 62,115 units. Sharp increase in
dividend proposed In the light of the high level of profitability and
the positive outlook, the Board of Management and the Supervisory Board
are proposing a significant dividend increase at the Annual General
Meeting. BMW AG's unappropriated profit available for distribution,
totalling euro 458 million, will be used to pay a dividend of euro 0.70
for each share of common stock (2005: euro 0.64) - an increase of 9.4%
over the previous year - and euro 0.72 for each share of preferred
stock (2005: euro 0.66) - an increase of 9.1% over the previous year.
Including the share buy-back, BMW AG's shareholders will therefore
participate in the success of the BMW Group by receiving an aggregate
amount in excess of euro 700 million. New authorisation for share
buy-back proposed The Board of Management and the Supervisory Board of
BMW AG are also proposing a resolution at the Annual General Meeting to
authorise the buy-back of up to 10% of the Company's share capital. The
authorisation will again be valid for a period of 18 months. The
buy-back authorisation passed in the previous year is valid until 15
November 2007. It has not yet been decided whether or to what extent
that authorisation will be applied to buy back further shares. BMW
Welt set to open in mid-October The BMW Group will open its new
delivery centre, BMW Welt, on 17 October. The public will have the
opportunity to visit this architecturally unique building for the first
time on open days on 20 and 21 October. * * * Norbert Reithofer's
speech at the Annual General Meeting can be downloaded from the
BMW Group website at www. bmwgroup.com/ir. BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, USA, has
been proclaimed the Energy Partner of the Year by the US Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA). In May 2006 the plant converted the supply of
energy at the paint shop to methane gas. This saves about 60,000 tons
of CO2 a year, equal to the annual heat energy consumption of some
15,000 US households. At the same time the plant's annual energy costs
will be cut by a six-digit Euro figure. The coveted award was presented
to BMW Manufacturing Co. and the plant's partner, Dürr Systems,
which delivered the process technology for the paint shop, on 24
January 2007. Through the award, the Environmental Protection Agency
specifically honours one of the most ambitious landfill gas projects in
North America. The gas for BMW Plant Spartanburg is generated by the
biological conversion of waste materials at the Palmetto Landfill Site
15 kilometres from the plant. From there methane gas goes through a
pipeline directly to the turbines on the BMW plant premises, where it
is then used in particular to generate electric power and warm water
for the paint shop. "This is a very positive project that pays off
for all parties involved. It allows us to use a source of energy
previously untapped, capitalising on this supply of energy for
generating electricity and heat at our plant. This enables us to reduce
emissions enormously and make a significant contribution to the cause
of environmental protection", states Briggs Hamilton, the
Environmental Spokesman for BMW Plant Spartanburg. In all, 63 per cent
of the energy consumed by the plant is now covered by methane gas.
Methane gas from the landfill was used to supply energy to the plant for
the first time in 2002. With the results of this pilot application
being convincing and satisfactory, this initial test set the foundation
for the 100 per cent supply of gas energy to the paint shop now
becoming reality. The Energy Partner of the Year award is presented each
year as part of the EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP).
This program promotes the partnership of communities and companies
seeking to capitalise on the use of landfill gases for the generation
of energy.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Locations,Sustainability

Conducting tests on the most demanding track in
the world, the Nürburgring Nordschleife, has always been a matter
of course for BMW. After all, this track - respectfully referred to by
many as the "Grüne Hölle ("Green Hell") -
provides a highly concentrated dose of all levels of difficulty
confronting an automobile in everyday road traffic. BMW test drivers
have been permanent guests here since the sixties, using a former BMW
dealership as their base. In 1991, the building once owned by BMW
dealer Willi Martini was taken over by BMW, and the rooms were also used
as a base for the BMW Motorsport Team. Activities for the German
Touring Car Championship (DTM), Super Touring Car Championship (STW),
ADAC GT Cup and various 24-hour race entries were all part of the
program here, as well as the technical and organisational co-ordination
for the popular BMW Ring Taxi. However, as time went on the premises
and facilities became overstretched and extensive reconstruction was
finally necessary. During a three-year period of reconstruction, the
BMW Test Centre at the Nürburgring was turned into a building site
and now the facility has officially gone into operation as the third
site of BMW M GmbH. In three construction phases since October 2003,
modern high-tech workshop facilities have been created which enable BMW
AG and BMW M GmbH to test cars for serial production readiness and
develop new vehicle projects directly on the Nürburgring
Nordschleife. The workshop area in particular has been significantly
enlarged as compared to the previous facilities. Formerly comprising
only four car lifts, the premises now comprise a now a total of eleven
workplaces with car lifts including a new wash hall, a new wheel
alignment facility and a so-called one-way street system. Thanks to
induction loops and a sophisticated barrier system, it is now possible
to go through the workshop facility without crossing an intersection,
which also creates more space in the interior of the BMW Test Centre.
To ensure that all staff feel at home, a new leisure wing has been added
with a common room, and the team base has also been refurbished. Since
test results and protocols have to be transmitted quickly to the
research centres in Munich and Garching, technicians and engineers now
work in a generously sized office with some 30 computer workplaces.
Finally, two exhibition and conference rooms have been created, the
reception area has been separated and renewed and the exterior
redecorated. All in all, a total of 870 square metres of building space
has now been increased to 1,178 square metres and 5,131 cubic metres of
refurbished space has been expanded to 9,000 cubic metres. Thanks to
this reconstruction project, which has been carried out without
imposing significant limitations on ongoing test operations, BMW AG and
BMW M GmbH now have a test centre which fulfils all modern requirements
and which will demonstrate BMW's pioneering test expertise at the
Nürburgring for years to come.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Locations

Today the 500,000th BMW X5 is coming off the
production line at BMW Manufacturing Co. in South Carolina/USA - some 5
1/2 years after the start of production in September 1999. This very
special vehicle, a 3.0-litre X5 diesel in Midnight Blue and with BMW
Individual equipment, is going to BMW's Retail Outlet in Hamburg,
Germany. BMW Manufacturing Co. in Spartanburg is the exclusive
manufacturing plant building the X5 for the world market and exports
this unique Sports Activity Vehicle to more than 120 countries the
world over. The X5's main sales market, however, remains the USA. The
BMW X5 was the first vehicle to establish the new market segment of SAVs
and, to this day, sets the benchmark in this segment in terms of both
driving dynamics and safety. The unique story of success of this
equally unique Sports Activity Vehicle began right from the start upon
its introduction into the market, the 100,000th X5 coming off the
production line within just two years after the start of production on
23 August 2001. BMW's strategy of success - production follows the
market. Production of the BMW X5 in the USA demonstrates the success of
BMW's strategy of "production following the market". Building
the X5 in its main sales market, BMW is not only setting off the
currency risk, but also boosting national sales: Ever since taking the
decision in 1992 to build a new plant in South Carolina, BMW has
boosted sales in the USA from the original figure at the time of 53,000
units to 260,079 units in 2004. "Without our commitment in South
Carolina these results would not have been possible, simply because our
plant in Spartanburg makes us a local player in the USA", states
Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Board Member Production of BMW AG. Establishing
and enlarging production capacities in the USA, the BMW Group has
helped to secure and create new jobs also in Germany, with a large share
of the BMWs sold in the USA coming from BMW's German plants in Munich,
Dingolfing, and Regensburg.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

X5,Press Release,Locations,Product,BMW
