Goodwood. All eyes will be on BMW M GmbH at the 2022
Goodwood Festival of Speed, as BMW’s legendary Motorsport division
celebrates five decades of success. Festivalgoers will witness the
world premiere of the first-ever BMW M3 Touring and the UK premiere of
the new BMW M4 CSL, as both take to the hill throughout the
world-famous four-day event. All this against the backdrop of a
striking central feature sculpture on the lawn of Goodwood House,
designed as a homage to 50 years of motorsport excellence as it
showcases some of the most iconic models from BMW M. Elsewhere,
visitors will be able to see – and in some cases, drive – the latest
models from BMW’s exciting range, including the new BMW iX1, i7, i4
and iX M60.

For the first time in its history, the BMW M range will be
complemented by a BMW M3 Touring which is a distillation of the
technological prowess and know-how from the BMW M3 and M4 family,
combined with the practicality of a five-door touring model. This
latest BMW M model will be unveiled at BMW M at Trackside at 10:00 am
(BST) on Thursday 23 June, alongside a high-performance M3 Touring
with Performance Parts, and can then be seen on the Hillclimb in the
‘First Glance’ category every day of the Festival.

Alongside the M3 Touring and BMW M3 Touring MotoGP Safety Car on the
hill will be the new BMW M4 CSL, celebrating its UK premiere. This
ultimate, track-honed, two-seater coupe is defined by a 40hp power
hike over the current BMW M4 Competition Coupé to 550hp, while
meticulous weight-saving measures – including the use of carbon-fibre
for the roof, bonnet and boot lid – achieve a 100kg reduction in
overall weight (in standard specification in the German market). As a
result, the new BMW M4 CSL has recorded the best-ever lap-time for a
BMW road car at the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit.

With BMW M GmbH as the honoured marque, the Central Feature in front
of Goodwood House will present an eye-catching display of BMW M cars
past, present and future. BMW UK will add its legendary BMW 3.0 CSL to
the Central Feature, while BMW Group Classic is providing three
further examples: the BMW M1 Procar from the late 1970s; a WTCC BMW 3
Series E90; the Le Mans winning 1999 BMW V12 LMR. The display is
completed by the BMW M LMDh racecar, that will debut next year.

Besides providing historic BMW M cars for the Central Feature, BMW
Group Classic will bring four additional famous race cars to
Goodwood’s Hillclimb. Pedro Piquet (BRA), son of three-time F1 World
Champion Nelson Piquet, will drive the world’s first turbo-charged F1
World Champion car, the 1983 Brabham BMW BT52.

Steve Soper (UK) will climb the hill in the BMW V12 LMR on Thursday.
He is followed by Markus Flasch (CEO of BMW M GmbH, 2018-2021), who
will be in the driver’s seat on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

HRH Leopold Prince of Bavaria (GER) will drive the sharknose BMW
635CSi and Bruno Spengler (CAN) will drive his famous BMW Z4 GTR which
features the Michel Vaillant Design from the 2015 Spa-Francorchamps
24h race.

For many, BMW M at Trackside will form the focal point for the long
weekend’s celebrations. Crowned by an original BMW M1, the stand will
host iconic models from BMW M’s illustrious past, from the legendary
BMW M3 E30 to the revered BMW M3 CSL E46. They will take their place
alongside a thrilling line-up of modern-day BMW M greats, from the
ultimate 635hp BMW M5 CS and track-honed BMW M4 GT3 to the exclusive
new BMW M850i Convertible and innovative electric BMW i4 M50. Visitors
will be able to catch a glimpse of the future for BMW M, with the
innovative BMW Concept XM, a vision of uncompromising high performance
and extravagant luxury.

The Stable Yard – once again dedicated to BMW’s latest range of
all-electric and electrified models – will offer the chance to see the
stunning BMW i Vision Circular, a concept which illustrates the
company’s determination to become the most sustainable manufacturer.
Optimised for the circular economy and with the goal of achieving 100%
recycled and recyclable material use, the BMW i Vision Circular offers
a view of a compact yet luxurious fully-electric vehicle with a focus
on sustainability for the year 2040.

BMW’s sustainability focus is equally apparent in the new BMW i7, on
display in The Stable Yard following its recent unveiling. The latest
version of the brand’s flagship saloon is set to redefine the luxury
segment with new levels of electrification and digitalisation. Its
state-of-the-art all-electric drivetrain is complemented by a blend of
luxurious interior design and an astonishing entertainment experience,
with the multi-sensory BMW iDrive and unique 31.3-inch 8K BMW Theatre
Screen. These attributes are further displayed in the powerful new BMW
M760e, a plug-in hybrid with 571hp that delivers scintillating
performance yet achieves remarkable efficiency.

The recently revealed BMW iX1 will make its UK debut at Goodwood
Festival of Speed, representing another first at the Stable Yard. The
third-generation BMW X1 features a sharper design, across-the-board
sustainability and cutting-edge digital innovations. Available for the
first time with an all-electric drive system, the BMW iX1 xDrive30 is
set to offer an electric driving range between 257 – 272 miles (WLTP,
provisional figures).

These models will also be joined by the company’s technology
flagship, the new BMW iX M60, a fully-electric Sports Activity Vehicle
that combines emissions-free driving pleasure and sporting agility
with lounge-style luxury and comfort. Powered by two BMW M eDrive
electric motors to provide intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive
capability, the BMW iX M60 can accelerate from 0-62 mph in a seamless
3.8 seconds, yet still achieve up to 348 miles (WLTP) of driving range
on a single charge.

Members of the public will be able to experience the BMW iX M60’s
searing performance for themselves during Friday’s ‘Electric Only’
Motor Circuit Test Drives, where they’ll also be able to take to the
circuit behind the wheel of the new BMW i4, the brand’s first-ever
fully-electric Gran Coupé, and the practical BMW iX3.

Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW M, said: “There can be no better place to
celebrate our 50th anniversary than among our fans at this year’s
Goodwood Festival of Speed, surrounded by the iconic cars that have
cemented our position in motorsport history. But we’ll also spend our
time at the world-famous event looking to the future, with a selection
of exciting new models from our innovative electrified line-up, and
the global premiere of the eagerly-anticipated first-ever BMW M3 Touring.”

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is being held over four days from
23-26 June 2022.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

Munich. From the heart of the BMW brand –
fully-electric on the road: The first BMW i4 vehicles were delivered
at the BMW Welt last weekend. Bernhard Kuhnt, Senior Vice
President BMW Group Market Germany, is delighted: "It
is a very special moment for us when we hand over brand new models to
customers for the first time. The BMW i4 shows in an emotional way how
well fully-electric mobility and sporty driving dynamics fit together.
For us, it is therefore clear: the BMW i4 will offer our customers a
whole new dimension of driving pleasure."

On this special occasion, the BMW Group did not miss the opportunity
to invite the customers of the first BMW i4s to an accompanying
programme around the fully-electric Gran Coupé in Munich.

Customers are excited

Stefan Ballin, owner of an electrical contracting company and one of
the first customers, was delighted to take delivery of his BMW i4: “It
wasn’t possible, at the time I placed the order, to take a test drive,
but I knew the BMW i4 was exactly the right car for me! I was
impressed by the concept – the symbiosis of range, elegant design and
unmistakeable BMW sportiness. I also wanted a car that would show how
we, as an innovative company, can comfortably integrate
electromobility into both our private and working environments. I’m
also looking forward to sporty driving pleasure with zero emissions in
the i4 – because the electricity I need to run it will come from our
own photovoltaic system.”

Bernhardt Kuhnt confirmed: “With the BMW i4, we have
absolutely struck a chord. You can see this from the very high demand
for this car. We are delighted to be expanding our electrified product
line-up with this sporty, fully-electric Gran Coupé at exactly the
right time and to present the first vehicles to our customers today –
three months earlier than originally planned. The first delivery of a
BMW i4 today, and the first BMW iX in about a week, are further
milestones for the BMW Group on the road to electromobility.”

One in four BMW Group vehicles in Germany electrified

Kuhnt goes on to explain: “One in four BMWs delivered in Germany
today already comes with a fully-electric drive train or is a plug-in
hybrid. By the end of the third quarter, around 41,900 electrified
BMWs and 8,820 electrified MINIs had been delivered to customers this
year. The fully-electric MINI Cooper SE alone already accounts for
about 20 percent of MINI brand sales. The BMW Group has almost doubled
its sales of electrified models in Germany compared with the previous
year, at around 25 percent.”

Impressive driving dynamics thanks to model-specific chassis
technology and electric drive train

The BMW i4 combines characteristic sportiness with elegant design –
and brings electromobility to the traditional core of the BMW brand.
The four-door Gran Coupé is the first fully-electric BMW consistently
geared towards driving dynamics. Impressive driving dynamics and high
range are combined by harnessing the power of efficient drive
technology and intelligent lightweight construction.

Range and innovative technology were also purchasing considerations
for Ronny Scharschmidt, whose firm implements regional construction
projects with renewable energies: “I decided on the i4 because of the
range and the many new driving functions and on-board sensors that
make driving safer and more comfortable. My first long drive in the
BMW i4 will be from Munich directly home to Saxony-Anhalt: In the
meantime, there are enough fast chargers that you don’t have to worry
about charging anymore.”

Convenient charging

When BMW Group customers buy an electrified vehicle, it comes with a
BMW or MINI Charging Card that gives them access to one of the world’s
largest charging networks. BMW also offers two options for convenient
charging at home: the BMW Wallbox and the Smart Wallbox from BMW Group
partner NewMotion. For example, this wallbox also enables company car
drivers to precisely record charging processes for accounting purposes.

BMW Group electro-offensive continues

In addition to the two main innovation flagships, the BMW iX and BMW
i4, the BMW i3, MINI SE* and BMW iX3* are already on the market. These
will be followed in the coming years by fully-electric versions of the
BMW 7 Series, BMW X1 and the high-volume BMW 5 Series. Every plant in
Germany will produce fully-electric cars from 2022 onwards. A
fully-electric successor to the MINI Countryman and the all-electric
Rolls-Royce Spectre will also be released onto the market. By 2023,
the BMW Group will have at least one fully-electric model on the roads
in about 90 percent of its current market segments. The BMW Group
expects fully-electric vehicles to account for at least 50 percent of
its global sales in 2030.

Munich. BMW is taking its successful co-creation
initiative to a new level with the market launch of the two fully
electric BMW iX and BMW i4 vehicles. BMW’s “Moving Minds” initiative
combines strong content ideas with social media stars such as
podcaster and sustainability activist Gemma Styles; twice
Grammy-nominated artist, DJ and music producer Steve Aoki; and
entrepreneur, model, actor and artist Luka Sabbat. The collaboration
between BMW and its partners results in authentic storytelling. “I
love learning about progress in sustainability and working with others
who feel the same way. The fact that this Moving Minds group, with all
their different talents, needs and backgrounds, can stand together to
drive change in sustainable mobility is fun and meaningful at the same
time”, says Gemma Styles about the “Moving Minds” campaign.

“Moving Minds” focuses on the latest BMW i models. Together with the
brand, the partners present the two new electric BMW iX and i4
vehicles to a broad digital audience. “Moving Minds” comprises 11
strong-minded personalities from various social fields such as art,
music, fashion, lifestyle, sustainability and technology who put the
two models through their paces over six months and post their
experiences on social media. “Working with this talented group is so
inspiring and refreshing to see that no matter our background, we can
always decide to change our ways of living and the way we treat each
other. Reconsidering tradition to save our planet by thinking twice
about the choices we make”, says Steve Aoki.

All the co-creators will share a “Big Picture” on their channels on
13 November to kick off this campaign. Their combined social community
reaches a total of around 75 million fans. “Moving Minds” will be
using the #bornelectric hashtag to present the BMW iX
and the BMW i4 to their followers from their own personal perspective
over the coming weeks. BMW will also publish selected posts on its
social media channels. BMW was able to gain the services of the
well-known photographer Jens Koch for the campaign pictures. The
photographer, known for his special visual language, staged the
co-creators together with the two new electric vehicles at exclusive locations.

BMW had already set new standards in co-creator communication during
the IAA Mobility 2021. The brand united its global network of
ambassadors at the international motor show in Munich to work with
them to produce creative content around the important themes of
electromobility and the circular economy. “The projects with our
co-creators during the IAA Mobility have demonstrated how
sustainability innovations can be communicated in a captivating and
creative way and how new and diverse target groups can be reached
authentically. We are proud to further expand our cooperation with
this select group of personalities, our Moving Minds, and to jointly
strengthen the communication messages around the market launches of
the BMW iX and i4,” says Stefan Ponikva, Head of BMW Brand
Communication and Experience.

Wide-reaching social media activities for the market launch of
the two all-electric BMW iX and BMW i4 models.

BMW is now turning even more intensively to a young community in
cooperation with the established network of opinion leaders for the
market launch of the BMW iX and the BMW i4. The co-creators credibly
outline to their target groups how the company lives and implements
its electromobility, using the two new electric models from BMW as
examples. Luka Sabbat says of the cooperation: “The purpose of my
platform is to inspire and encourage young people to pursue their

Markus Flasch is soon to head the product lines Rolls-Royce, BMW luxury and upper class as well as the BMW midrange class.</pp:summary>

Munich. With effect from 1 November, Franciscus van
Meel will assume the position as chairman of the board of BMW M GmbH.
He succeeds Markus Flasch, who, after three years at the helm of the
BMW Group subsidiary responsible for particularly sporty automobiles,
will be changing to the Overall Vehicle Development division. Flasch
will assume the position within the BMW Group as head of the
production lines Rolls-Royce, BMW luxury and upper class, in future
also including the BMW midrange production line. During his term of
office in the executive board of BMW M GmbH, the company rose to
become the world’s leading provider of performance and high-performance-automobiles.

For Franciscus van Meel it is a return to the chief executive
position at the top of BMW M GmbH. Between 2015 and 2018, he had
already led the company, which bears the status of an independent
automobile manufacturer. In the meantime, van Meel has also been,
inter alia, responsible for the Rolls-Royce product line as well as
for the BMW luxury and upper class. Under his leadership, the BMW
Group’s new technology flagship, the BMW iX, was brought to
series-production readiness. Van Meel also headed development of the
forthcoming purely electrically powered model variants. With this
experience in hand, he brings along the ideal prerequisites to also
shape the next stages already commenced on the way to electrification
at the BMW M GmbH. The first highlight of van Meel’s second term of
office has already been fixed: 2022 will witness the celebrations
marking the 50th anniversary of the company - originally founded as
BMW Motorsport GmbH - during which many new high-performance
automobiles will be presented. These will also include the first BMW
M3 Touring, which is already in an advanced stage of its series
development process.

During the past three years, BMW M GmbH has been influenced by an
unparalleled model offensive. The list of innovations with which BMW M
GmbH was able to achieve new record sales figures and assume market
leadership ahead of competitors included the extended range of
performance automobiles and new versions of the model series BMW M3
and BMW M4, which represent the core of the BMW M brand, as well as
the absolute top-of-the-range models in their segment, the BMW M2 CS
(fuel consumption combined: 10.1 – 9.2 l/100 km according to WLTP; CO2
emissions combined: 229 – 210 g/km according to WLTP) and the BMW M5
CS (fuel consumption combined: 11.3 l/100 km according to WLTP, CO2
emissions combined: 256 g/km according to WLTP). The latest new model,
the purely electrically powered BMW M automobile, the BMW i4 M50
(power consumption combined: 22.5 – 18.0 kWh/100 km according to WLTP,
CO2 emissions combined: 0 g/km), has now been brought to market.

At the same time, the BMW M company’s commitment as a car
manufacturer and in motorsport was recently again more closely
interlinked. This was accompanied by the realignment of motorsport
activities, new and particularly attractive customer sport offerings
and the decision on BMW’s comeback in international prototype racing,
which has been planned for 2023.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

Kick-off for a long-term cooperation between BMW and the Warner Music mega-band with sustainability as the unifying element.</pp:summary>

Munich. Local emission-free driving pleasure has
never been greater than with the first-ever BMW iX and the first-ever
BMW i4. The fitting soundtrack for the debut of the latest
all-electric models is called "Higher Power" and comes from
the British band Coldplay. You can hear the quartet's latest single in
the TV commercials filmed for launching the joint worldwide
communication campaign for the two new models. It delivers the perfect
message with the lyric line "This joy is electric". The song
for a new era of individual mobility marks the beginning of a
long-term collaboration between BMW and Coldplay.

Back in 2014, Coldplay, made up of Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Will
Champion and Guy Berryman, performed before 1,500 fans at the end of
their "Ghost Stories Tour" at BMW Welt in Munich. On the
basis of the contact established at that time, a creative connection
has now been established between the premium car manufacturer and the
band, which has achieved worldwide success in the charts. This is
based in particular on a common interest in sustainability in various
areas of life.

"In the initial discussions we quickly realised: Coldplay and
BMW share many common goals that go far beyond marketing," says
Jens Thiemer, Senior Vice President Customer and Brand BMW.
"Based on this we developed a real co-creation in which the band
actively contributed their thoughts and attitude to the design of our
campaign for the BMW iX and the BMW i4." The shared awareness of
sustainability gave rise to an intensive creative process between BMW
and the British musicians and which will produce further co-created
elements later in the year.

For the BMW Group, the premiere of the BMW iX and the BMW i4 is an
important milestone in the current phase of its transformation towards
electric mobility. The company expects all-electric models to account
for at least 50 percent of its global vehicle sales as early as 2030.
The Coldplay musicians are looking for innovative ways to combine
their popularity and performances in front of thousands of
enthusiastic fans with a positive impact with regard to
sustainability. The band said "We are proud to partner with BMW
as part of our efforts to make everything we do as sustainable as
possible. The technology that BMW use for their electric cars can
power our live performances almost entirely from renewable energy."

For the premiere of their new song "Higher Power", Coldplay
already managed to overcome the usual boundaries of the music
business. Last month, Coldplay premiered "Higher Power” in space.
The song was played for the first time by French astronaut Thomas
Pesquet on the International Space Station. Shortly after, the band
played its first live set of 2021 for earthly audiences in a special
livestream from the site of Glastonbury Festival.

With the launch for the campaign film for the BMW iX and the BMW i4,
fans all over the world can now enjoy the sound of "Higher
Power". "And that's just the beginning," announces
Stefan Ponikva, Vice President BMW Brand Communication and Brand
Experience. "We are already looking forward to being able to
realise exciting projects with regard to sustainability in an
intensive and substantial collaboration with Coldplay."

Deliveries will start in autumn 2021.

All-electric mobility reaches the very heart of the BMW brand. The
BMW i4 is the brand’s first electric vehicle focused squarely on
driving dynamics. Locally emission-free driving pleasure,
compromise-free premium quality and customer-oriented
individualisation come to the traditional core of the midsize
segment for the first time. The BMW i4 combines BMW’s fabled
sporting prowess and a range that also convinces over long journeys
with the elegant design, spaciousness and practicality of a
four-door Gran Coupé.

Market launch gets underway in November 2021 with two
model variants: BMW i4 M50 (electric power consumption combined:
24 – 19 kWh/100 km [62 miles] in the WLTP cycle; CO2
emissions of 0 g/km) – the first purely electric performance car
from BMW M GmbH, with 400 kW/544 hp, all-wheel drive and a range of
up to 510 kilometres (317 miles) in the WLTP cycle; BMW i4 eDrive40
(electric power consumption combined: 20 – 16 kWh/100 km [62 miles]
in the WLTP cycle; CO2 emissions von 0 g/km) with
250 kW/340 hp, classical rear-wheel drive and a range of up to

Extensive in-house drive train expertise: Start of production for
fifth-generation high-voltage batteries in Germany

Successful transformation to e-drive train production

Munich/Dingolfing. Production of fifth-generation
high-voltage batteries and battery modules for use in the BMW iX* and
BMW i4 is now underway at the Competence Centre for E-Drive Production
in Dingolfing. At the same time, the company is also increasing
production capacity for its fifth-generation electric motor, which has
been built in Dingolfing for the BMW iX3* since 2020 and will also
power the BMW iX* and BMW i4. “We expect at least 50 percent of the
vehicles we deliver to our customers worldwide to be electrified by
2030. To achieve this, we are relying on our extensive in-house drive
train expertise: We are increasing capacity at existing drive train
production locations – like here in Dingolfing – and developing
capabilities at others – like recently in Regensburg and Leipzig,”
explained Dr Michael Nikolaides, Senior Vice President, Production
Engines and E-Drives, BMW Group.

The BMW Group is investing more than 500 million euros in expanding
production capacity for e-drives at its Dingolfing location alone
between 2020 and 2022. From 2022, it will produce e-drives for more
than half a million electrified vehicles. The BMW Group will invest a
total of around 790 million euros in expanding capacity for electric
powertrain components at its Dingolfing, Leipzig, Regensburg and Steyr
locations between 2020 and 2022.

Standard production of the BMW iX* will soon get underway at BMW
Group Plant Dingolfing, followed by production of the BMW i4 at Plant
Munich in the autumn. The highly integrated e-drives and high-voltage
batteries for these vehicles will all be manufactured at the
Competence Centre for E-Drive Production in Dingolfing. The BMW Group
already began producing battery components at Plants Regensburg and
Leipzig in April and May 2021. In line with growing demand for
e-drives, BMW Group Plants Landshut and Steyr are also stepping up
production of e-drive housings.

Production of fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology

The output and energy content of drive units and high-voltage
batteries with fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology can be flexibly
scaled. This means they can be optimally adjusted to suit different
model variants.

Each vehicle uses up to two highly integrated e-drives, which combine
the electric motor, power electronics and transmission in a single
housing. Based on the design principle of a current-excited rotor, the
fifth-generation e-drive does not require any materials classified as
rare-earth metals.

BMW eDrive technology also comprises a high-voltage battery with
state-of-the-art battery cell technology. The BMW Group agreed with
its suppliers that they will only use renewable green power for
producing fifth-generation battery cells. The entire high-voltage
battery boasts outstanding qualities in the areas of performance,
charging and discharging characteristics, durability and safety. The
technically standardised production process for battery modules has
been further developed in such a way that different module variants
can be produced on the same production line – in line with the growing
range of electrified vehicle models and performance levels. The
production systems are highly flexible and scalable. Battery modules
are produced from supplied prismatic battery cells at the respective
BMW Group production location. A modular system developed in-house
allows model-specific high-voltage batteries to be manufactured from
these modules in a flexible arrangement.

The company has outstanding expertise and experience, both in the
field of battery cell technology and in production of model-specific
high-voltage batteries. The BMW Group conducts basic research in the
fields of cell chemistry and cell design at its own Battery Cell
Competence Centre. The BMW Group also produces battery cell prototypes
itself. These battery cell prototypes are used in tests to validate
the development maturity of battery cells and to demonstrate the
effectiveness of the production processes. In addition, the prototype
production of the battery cells serves the identification of process
potentials as well as the optimization of the production processes. In
this way, the BMW Group gains a thorough understanding of the entire
battery cell value chain and the decisive competitive advantages its
chemical and technical properties offer. This enables battery cells to
be manufactured to precise specifications that are geared towards each
vehicle’s individual requirements.

Competence Centre for E-Drive Production

Following extensive expansion, the Competence Centre for E-Drive
Production now provides a usable area of 125,000 sq. m. This is where
the company manufactures electric motors and the components needed for
them, as well as high-voltage batteries and battery modules. A paint
coating is also applied to the battery cells at this location. The
coating increases mechanical robustness and thermal conductivity,
thereby improving insulation and cooling of the even more powerful
fifth-generation battery cells.

Plant Dingolfing has been manufacturing standard high-voltage
batteries and battery modules since 2013, when the BMW Group's first
all-electric vehicle, the BMW i3*, went into production. The first
production lines for electric motors and high-voltage batteries for
plug-in hybrids went on-stream there in 2014. The Competence Centre
for E-Drive Production has been steadily growing ever since. The plant
has also been producing high-voltage batteries for the fully electric
MINI Cooper SE* since 2019 and, since 2020, also the highly integrated
fifth-generation e-drive used for the first time in the BMW iX3*.
Production of the even more powerful high-voltage batteries for the
BMW iX* and BMW i4 is now getting underway. E-drives for future models
can also be produced on the flexible production lines.

Qualification for long-term, sustainable jobs

With the BMW Group systematically pursuing progress in
electromobility, the demands on employees and their areas of
responsibility are also constantly evolving. “We are growing our staff
for e-drive production almost exclusively through personnel
restructuring. We are actively shaping the transformation process and
leveraging our employees’ skills so we can develop long-term
sustainable jobs,” explains Nikolaides.

The Competence Centre for E-Drive Production in Dingolfing currently
has almost 1,400 employees. By the end of 2021, around 1,900 employees
are expected to work in e-drive production in Dingolfing.

Production employees receive further training at the in-house
learning centre, which uses innovative vocational training and further
education methods to provide employees with intensive preparation for
their new tasks. Employees’ knowledge and skills are being expanded
specifically to include new electromobility technologies, with a
training concept that is constantly updated. The training sessions are
held in the classroom, at practice workstations and directly on the
production lines. Digital methods and augmented reality play a bigger
role here than ever before. Thanks to these methods, the training
courses were also able to continue safely during the coronavirus
pandemic, in compliance with health and safety measures.

“The learning centre takes a holistic approach that supports
employees throughout their professional development and further
education, from their first day in production,” reports Dr Sven
Jochmann, head of Production E-Drives Dingolfing, Landshut,
Regensburg, Leipzig. “As well as trainers and managers, new colleagues
are also supported by trained mentors who help them quickly find their
way around their new working environment,” adds Jochmann.

Transformation of the Dingolfing location

The Dingolfing location is a prime example of the successful
transformation of the BMW Group plants towards e-mobility and
digitalisation. E-drive production, including electric motors and
high-voltage batteries, is located in an existing, roughly 50-year-old
building at the site, rather than using new space. The infrastructure
was adapted to the new requirements and expanded accordingly. A modern
staff restaurant seats 300 and there is also a new parking deck with
space for 800 vehicles. The structural measures are rounded out by a
25,000 sq. m. logistics hall, new office spaces and social rooms close
to the production area, as well as an additional plant gate in the
south for improved logistics flows.

On the issue of sustainability, the BMW Group takes a holistic
approach to reducing CO2 emissions and minimising resource
consumption that covers the entire value chain, including in-house
production, the supply chain and use phase. In Dingolfing, as at all
BMW Group locations, production uses only green power. In addition,
all BMW Group locations have been net carbon neutral since this year,
through corresponding offsets and certificates. The company is also
using many other levers: from building technology to energy-efficient
installations to increased use of renewable energies. Electric trucks
will be used for intra-company goods transport at the Competence
Centre for E-Drive Production from the autumn.

2030: At least 50 percent of global BMW Group sales will be
fully electric

The BMW Group continues its massive electromobility ramp-up: The
company will offer five fully-electric models by the end of this year:
the BMW i3*, the MINI Cooper SE* and the BMW iX3*, as well as the two
main innovation flagships, the BMW iX* and BMW i4.

Between now and 2025, the BMW Group will increase its sales of
fully-electric models by an average of well over 50 percent per year –
more than ten times the number of units sold in 2020. Based on its
current market forecast, the company also expects at least 50 percent
of its global sales to come from fully-electric vehicles in 2030. In
total, over the next ten years or so, the BMW Group will be releasing
about ten million fully-electric vehicles onto the roads.

Global e-drive production network with a focus in Germany

The high-voltage batteries and battery components needed for all BMW
and MINI electrified vehicles come from the company’s own battery
factories in Dingolfing, Leipzig and Regensburg in Germany, as well as
from Spartanburg (USA) and Shenyang (China). The BMW Group has also
localised production of high-voltage batteries in Thailand, at its
Rayong plant, and is working with the Dräxlmaier Group for this.
Munich is home to the e-drive pilot plant and the Battery Cell
Competence Centre, where the BMW Group is conducting a full analysis
of battery cell value creation processes and advancing technology for
its production processes.

The company produces electric motors at the Competence Centre for
E-Drive Production in Dingolfing and at BMW Group Plant Landshut. BMW
Group Plant Steyr builds the housing for the highly integrated
fifth-generation e-drive.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

BMW iX xDrive50: Power consumption combined: < 21 kWh/100 km in

BMW IconicSounds Electric enriches electric mobility with a fascinating and unmistakable sonic experience. Collaboration with the Academy Award winner produces a new, characteristic driving sound for the BMW i4, the M version of the BMW i4 and the BMW iX.</pp:summary>

Munich. The future of driving pleasure is electric,
locally emission-free – and characterised by a typically BMW sporting
flair expressed not only in dynamic talent, but also through an
emotionally rich aural experience. BMW IconicSounds Electric brings an
unmistakable sound portfolio to BMW models powered by a fully electric
or plug-in hybrid drive system. The collaboration between composer and
curator Hans Zimmer and Renzo Vitale, Creative Director Sound at the
BMW Group, has produced a distinctive driving sound which customers
will soon be able to experience in a version developed specially for
electric BMW M cars. “Every BMW has its own character, which is
reflected in the sound it makes,” says film music creator and Academy
Award winner Zimmer. “So for the electrically driven BMW M models we
have developed a driving sound which accentuates their emotional
driving experience particularly vividly and ensures their performance
can be felt with even greater intensity.”

Hans Zimmer had previously been involved in the development of an
inspiring ready-to-drive sound for electrically powered BMWs which
instils a sense of excitement at the prospect of electric driving when
the Start/Stop button is pressed. The latest chapter in this
collaboration covers drive sounds for the BMW iX and BMW i4, including
a differentiated sound for the M-specification version of the BMW i4.

While the hush of electric driving offers an unprecedented level of
comfort, the driving experience loses a degree of emotionality. This
is where BMW IconicSounds Electric steps in to put smiles on the faces
of customers keen to experience Sheer Driving Pleasure with all the
senses. In the future, electric driving pleasure will be enhanced by
acoustic feedback to every movement of the accelerator. Like the
on-board driving modes selectable at the touch of a button, the
driving sound also takes its cues from the driving situation at hand
and the driver’s personal preferences. In the basic setting, BMW
IconicSounds Electric employs a strikingly transparent timbre with
spherical components to convey the basic character of an electrically
driven BMW brand model. An immersive and pleasant atmosphere is
created initially in the BMW i4 in COMFORT mode. But when the driver
steps on the accelerator, the direct relationship between how the car
is being driven and the sounds it makes is immediately revealed: the
sound experience deepens as load and speed increase. In SPORT mode, in
particular, the car’s aural spectrum is more dominant and powerful,
the sound providing a constant commentary on the driving situation.
Drive system processes are registered within milliseconds and
acceleration, load changes or recuperation given a suitable acoustic
accompaniment. Only when the vehicle is travelling in ECO PRO mode is
the acoustic feedback reduced to nothing. Here, the silence of the
drive system underscores the driver’s decision to adopt an
ultra-efficient driving style.

In the version developed specifically for electrified BMW M models,
the drive sound of the BMW i4 is charged with extra energy. Added to
which, the differentiation between COMFORT and SPORT mode is
especially strong. Overall, the drive system note displays a less
harmonious but engagingly rousing and technical sonic profile.
Acceleration sparks a rich intensification of the soundtrack’s
development, authentically reflecting the car’s performance character.
“When you press the pedal of an M car, you suddenly get goosebumps all
over your body,” says sound designer Renzo Vitale. “We translated this
feeling into a drive sound that expresses a fusion of superior power
and flowing energy.”

Hans Zimmer and Renzo Vitale had already co-developed the driving
sound for the BMW Vision M NEXT revealed in 2019 and the BMW Concept
i4 presented the following year. Numerous learnings from this creative
process have now been channelled into the design of the sound for
future series-produced vehicles.

The new drive sounds developed as part of the collaboration with Hans
Zimmer are expected to feature in the BMW i4 and BMW iX over the
course of 2022. IconicSounds Electric comes as standard in the BMW iX
and can be specified as an option for the BMW i4. In cars with earlier
build dates, the new sounds can be imported retrospectively via Remote
Software Upgrade, should the customer wish. The new spectrum includes
one ready-to-drive sound and one stop sound, plus a driving sound
which will be made available in the relevant version for BMW models
and BMW M cars with electrified drive system.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Research & Development,BMW i,i20,G26,iX,i4,Acoustics, Aerodynamics,Product,BMW

Munich. The character of the Concept i4 is not only a
product of its design, but also of its visionary sound profile. Hans
Zimmer composed the sound of the BMW Concept i4 together with BMW
sound designer Renzo Vitale under the brand name BMW IconicSounds
Electric. BMW IconicSounds Electric will imbue BMW’s electric models
with extra emotional depth by connecting the driver with the vehicle’s
character on another level through individual tones and sounds.

“Renzo and I were inspired to bring together the past and future of
BMW with the sound for the BMW Concept i4,” explains Zimmer. “We hope
the sound we created is classic yet surprising and has a feeling of
lightness that is fitting for the BMW brand.” The aural repertoire of
the BMW Concept i4 stretches from the driving sounds in the Experience
Mode “Core” to the more intense tones of “Sport”. Acoustic
accompaniments to a door opening and when starting the car are
likewise part of its soundscape.

Sound by Hans Zimmer is the starting signal for electric
driving pleasure.

Hans Zimmer and Renzo Vitale presented the new start/stop sound in
Zimmer’s Santa Monica studio back in November 2019. The ready-to-drive
sound for all-electric BMW models and BMW plug-in hybrids will be
introduced as a standard feature worldwide from July 2020. “The
ability to design the sound in our vehicles makes it possible for us
to spark positive emotions,” says Vitale. “The new start/stop sound is
intended to instil a sense of excitement at the prospect of electric
driving when the customer gets into their vehicle and begins the journey.”

BMW IconicSounds Electric.

The silence of electric drive systems is often cited as a major
benefit of electric mobility. As the choice of electrified models
increases, however, it also means some drivers are missing out on the
emotional appeal of sound. Jens Thiemer, Senior Vice President
Customer and Brand BMW: “Sound has always played an important role in
the emotionalisation of our vehicles. Now we are taking the joy of
sheer driving pleasure to a new level and are particularly pleased to
be working with Hans Zimmer to create the new sound world of electric
mobility at BMW. This collaboration will result in our forward-looking
sound offering for electrified vehicles: BMW IconicSounds Electric.”

The BMW Concept i4 drive sound is the second developed for electric
BMW vehicles with Hans Zimmer, following the presentation of the
electric sound for the BMW Vision M NEXT at the #NEXTGen event in
Munich in June 2019. “We have an extraordinary opportunity to turn
electric driving in a BMW into a very special experience with the help
of great sounds,” Zimmer commented in 2019. “I am relishing the
challenge of co-designing the composition for future electric BMWs.”

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Concept Vehicles & Design,Press Release,Drive Technologies,Mobility of the future,G26,i4,Acoustics, Aerodynamics,Product,BMW

Munich. The BMW Group is opening a new chapter in its
history with the unveiling of a pure-electric Gran Coupe. The BMW
Concept i4 takes electric drive to the core of the BMW brand and
heralds a new era in Sheer Driving Pleasure. The BMW Concept i4
represents a look ahead to the BMW i4, slated to enter production in
2021. It provides a whole new take on the dynamic excellence for which
BMW is renowned and blends a modern, elegantly sporty design with the
spaciousness and functionality of a four-door Gran Coupe – all while
generating zero local emissions.

“The BMW Concept i4 brings electrification to the core of the BMW
brand,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group
Design. “The design is dynamic, clean and elegant. In short: a perfect
BMW that happens to be zero emission.” The drivetrain’s standout
numbers include a range of up to 600 km (WLTP), output of up to 530
hp, 0 – 100 km/h (0 – 60 mph) acceleration of approximately 4.0
seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 km/h (124 mph). However, the
driving qualities of the BMW Concept i4 cannot be expressed in figures
alone. The virtually silent delivery of power creates an entirely new
sensation of dynamism.

“The design of the BMW Concept i4 shows fantastic proportions, a
powerfully expressive character and, of course, a lot of attention to
detail,” adds Domagoj Dukec, Head of BMW Design. “With the BMW Curved
Display, we have redefined BMW’s signature driver focus in an
extremely elegant way. At the same time, the BMW Concept i4 transports
a feeling of sustainable driving pleasure.” As part of the package,
the Concept i4 includes several exterior and interior design elements
which will make an appearance in both the BMW i4 and other
electrically-powered production vehicles.

The exterior – electrifying aesthetics.

The modern, elegant exterior represents a deliberate counterpoint to
the dynamic flair of the driving experience. The perfectly resolved
Gran Coupe proportions create an authentic, modern and confident
appearance. The long wheelbase, fastback roofline and short overhangs
form a basic profile brimming with elegance and dynamism. With its
four doors, the BMW Concept i4 offers not only a high level of
everyday usability and practicality, but also a much larger interior
than the car’s modern and dynamic proportions would immediately suggest.

Clear surfaces and aerodynamic details.

Crisp, smooth lines and taut volumes merge into a rich, smoothly
contoured sculpture and create a clear surfacing language. The modern
exterior paint shade Frozen Light Copper reprises a colour nuance
displayed by the BMW Vision iNEXT and showcases the interplay of
surfaces to visually stunning effect. Blue elements in the front end,
flanks and rear end point to the car’s BMW i origins. They shine a
spotlight on the signature BMW i icons and bring the technology below
the surface to the fore – for example, the kidneys in their role as an
intelligence panel, the mouldings in the side skirts concealing the
battery technology, and the diffuser elements in the rear end, which
fill the design space vacated by exhaust tailpipes and enhance
aerodynamic efficiency.

A host of other aerodynamic measures maximise the car’s electric
range. The blanked off kidney grille and clear aero lips provide
detail examples of sophisticated airflow engineering at work. Another
distinctive area of the car are the wheel rims. These have been
designed exclusively for the BMW Concept i4 and blend aerodynamic and
lightweight design; smooth – and therefore aerodynamically optimised –
surfaces contrast with ultra-low-weight, high-strength spokes. The
rims extend the car’s palette of colours and materials, emphasising
its luxurious overall character.

The front end – the eye-catching face of a new era.

The front-end treatment of the BMW Concept i4 presents the familiar
BMW icons in a new look, lending a visually powerful face to the
electric age at BMW. The prominent, closed-off kidney grille provides
a tangible connection between the past and future of BMW. The BMW icon
also gains new functionality: With no combustion engine to require
cooling, the grille now serves primarily as an “intelligence panel”
housing various sensors. The grille teases the technology behind the
scenes with a special design for this model. The headlights likewise
provide a bridge between the past and the future; the classical
four-eyed front end is reprised here with a very modern and pared-back
interpretation. Two intricate, freestanding LED elements on either
side integrate all of the requisite light functions. Clean surfaces
and a small number of crisp lines around the grille create a
contemporary front-end graphic with considerable visual impact. A BMW
i-style blue accent in the grille surround sets the seal on the
front-end styling.

Taking the first steps with the new BMW brand identity.

In the course of the BMW Concept i4 presentation BMW is unveiling the
brand’s new look for the first time. The new logo for communications
also provides the basis for the badge on the BMW Concept i4. Its
two-dimensional and transparent design ensures seamless integration
and brings the special exterior colour shade Frozen Light Copper to
even greater prominence. The concept car not only has the task of
looking ahead to the future in terms of aesthetics, technology and
innovation, it also explores the design potential within our BMW trademark.

Striking rear end with aerodynamic features.

The rear of the BMW Concept i4 sits low over the road and cuts a
broad, horizontally emphasised figure. The surfaces progress across
the rear in a smooth and luxuriant movement, and give it a very modern
and calm appearance. The long, slim L-shaped rear lights continue the
theme. Below the rear lights, the inward-angled surfaces form
aerodynamics-enhancing lips and incorporate vertical air outlets. The
verticality of the design here emphasises the car’s sporting stance.
Further down, the rear apron has a forceful presence and enhances
aerodynamic efficiency. Where exhaust tailpipes would once have been
found, diffuser elements in BMW i Blue indicate the presence of a
pure-electric drive system and reference the design of the BMW i
Vision Dynamics.

The interior – innovation meets minimalism.

The interior of the BMW Concept i4 focuses on those times when the
driver chooses to pilot the car themselves. To this end, every element
in the front of the cabin is trained on the driver. The new BMW Curved
Display teams up with the steering wheel to reveal a new take on
driver orientation and offers a look ahead to the display in the
production versions of the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4. Here, the
presentation surfaces of the information display and Control Display
merge into a single unit inclined towards the driver. This screen
grouping optimises presentation of information and makes the display’s
touch operation more intuitive. Advanced display tech with
non-reflective glass also removes the need for a shroud to shade the
displays and therefore contributes to an extremely uncluttered and
airy cockpit.

The BMW Curved Display encompasses a large proportion of the section
in front of the driver and above the centre stack, and gives the front
area a very modern appearance. Its slim, borderless form exudes
quality and sophistication. Almost all operating functions are
integrated into the display as part of an overall approach centred on
reducing the number of haptic controls to the minimum. Even the
climate control system now works by touch control.

Focus on the essential.

The front section of the interior around the BMW Curved Display also
majors on pared-back design. The understated use of different
materials and the fundamental arrangement of controls creates a modern
yet also luxurious ambience. With this in mind, elements such as air
outlets are integrated almost invisibly into the overall geometry and
concealed behind strong patterns.

Accent strips in warm Gold Bronze blending to chrome lend the
interior a high-class touch. The central control panel replaces a
traditional gear lever with a toggle-type shifter. Elements such as
the iDrive Controller and seat memory buttons in the doors are
finished in a classy crystal glass. The cloth/leather combination for
the seats – composed of microfibre with line graphics and natural
leather tanned using olive leaf – sets a high-quality and sustainable
seal on the interior. The overall result is a clearly structured,
bright and airy cabin which brings across the tranquillity and
authority of electric drive systems.

Spacious rear compartment.

Rear-seat passengers are greeted by a generously-sized compartment
offering levels of headroom and legroom that exceed expectations of a
coupe. Integral head restraints for the front and rear seats add
further to the sporting feel. The cut-out in the head restraints is a
classy detail that references sporty BMW models from the current line-up.

The rear seats extend the horizontal graphic emerging from the doors
to create a lounge feel in the rear. Meanwhile, the outer seats
reprise the dynamic form of the front seats, heightening the sporting
flavour. They also use very little stitching, which further emphasises
the clean and modern feel.

Further developed user interface design with Experience Modes.

The screen grouping with new BMW Curved Display provides a digital
gateway into the electric age at BMW. Look and feel are clearly
influenced by the latest electronic devices and have been made
deliberately less “automotive” in nature. In the display itself, flat
layers provide considerable visual depth. Overall, the BMW Curved
Display and new presentation approach combine to provide a first-class
content-viewing experience.

Three different Experience Modes enable users to explore the various
facets of the electric drive system and provide a look ahead – in
terms of visuals at least – to the next-generation operating system
from 2021. The sometimes emphasised visual differentiation between the
three Experience Modes (“Core”, “Sport” and “Efficient”) spans
everything from how the user experiences the display and graphics to
how the interior is presented. Ambient lighting in the dashboard,
doors and (indirectly) below the display indicate the technical
adjustments taking place.

“Core” mode introduces the driver’s area to an updated interpretation
of the four “widgets” familiar from the display concept of existing
models. Here, the graphics reprise the pattern above the air vents and
the Gold Bronze accent colour, consciously referencing the car’s
interior design. In the area where the central display used to be
positioned, a map and widgets now line up alongside one another. The
user can navigate around the diagonal widgets using a swipe movement
and arrange them intuitively by drag-and-drop. This allows them to
adapt the display to their personal preferences.

In “Sport” mode, the “widgets” come closer together and create a
focussed view. Sideways movements behind the zones are used to show
how tight the next corner is, facilitating anticipatory driving. This
form of content presentation also allows effective peripheral viewing.
The right-hand area of the display shows specific functions in a
similar way to BMW M’s lap timer app.

“Efficient” mode debuts an “Assisted Driving View”, which shows the
driver what the car’s sensors are detecting. This Experience Mode
opens up deeper insights into the car’s technology, such as how it
communicates with its surroundings. In the BMW Concept i4, the focus

The sound of the BMW Concept i4.

The BMW Concept i4 is not only characterised by its individual
design, but also by its own visionary and unique sound. It was
developed under the brand name of BMW IconicSounds Electric by world
renowned composer Hans Zimmer together with BMW Sound Designer Renzo
Vitale. BMW IconicSounds Electric aims to emotionalise BMW's electric
vehicles and make them audible using individual sound worlds. The
sound of the BMW Concept i4 achieves this to perfection – it combines
BMW’s past and future. It gives the driver the feeling that there
are no limits of expression. The sound is manifold, surprising and
it provides a sense of lightness and transparency. The sound worlds of
the BMW Concept i4 range from the driving sounds in "Core"
mode to the more intense and pronounced sounds of "Sport"
mode. Also included are the sounds of the door opening and the
starting scenario.

The technology as earmarked for the upcoming BMW i4.

Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology is a defining feature of the
BMW i4 and therefore also of future electric mobility. The BMW iX3 due
to go into production in 2020 will lead the way in the application of
the new tech, which will be introduced in a number of electrically
powered BMW vehicles – such as the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4. The electric
motor, power electronics, charging unit and high-voltage battery using
fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology are all-new developments
enabling the BMW Group to take another significant step forward in the
field of electrified drive systems. The electric motor developed for
the BMW i4 generates maximum output of up to 390 kW/530 hp, which
ranks it alongside a current BMW V8 combustion engine. Its
instantaneous power delivery gives the BMW i4 standout performance
attributes and exceptional efficiency.

The fifth generation of BMW eDrive also brings a newly designed
high-voltage battery with the very latest battery cell technology. The
version of the battery developed for the BMW i4 impresses with its
extremely slim construction and optimised energy density. It weighs
roughly 550 kilograms, has an energy content of around 80 kWh and
achieves an operating range of up to 600 km in the WLTP cycle.

All in all, fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology sets new standards
in terms of power density, efficiency and range in locally
emission-free driving.

Series production of the new BMW i4.

Series production of the new BMW i4 will begin in 2021 at the BMW
Group’s main plant in Munich. This means that, in the future,
combustion-engined vehicles, plug-in hybrids and all-electric vehicles
will be manufactured on the same assembly line in Munich.

Integrating the BMW i4 into the existing production system represents
a challenging task for Plant Munich. The body concept of the BMW i4
differs from the architectures of the vehicle models produced at the
plant to date due to the need to accommodate its high-voltage battery.
Approximately 90 per cent of the existing production equipment in the
body shop can be incorporated into the process, i.e. adapted to
manufacture of the i4. However, the remaining ten per cent –
especially the machinery involved in building the rear structure –
will need to be newly built.

A separate new piece of equipment will be fitted in the assembly
halls for installation of the high-voltage battery, as the battery
needs to be fitted in the car from below. A particular challenge in
the conversion/installation process are the crowded structures of the
assembly halls. Working within these tight confines, old machinery
will have to be removed and new equipment installed and brought on
stream within a six-week period. This requires long-term planning and
precise implementation.

The company is investing a total of around 200 million euros in Plant
Munich to bring series production of the BMW i4 to fruition.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Concept Vehicles & Design,Press Kit,G26,i4,Product,BMW
