Munich/Zagreb. The BMW Group and the Croatian
University of Zagreb’s Regional Centre of Excellence for Robotic
Technology (CRTA) continue to advance joint research in battery cell
production. The “Insight” research project will develop and implement
practical AI models to optimise battery cell production at the BMW
Group. The research project covers the entire battery cell value
chain: from electrode production to end-of-line testing and in-house
developed direct recycling.

How the research project saves raw materials, costs and time

At the Battery Cell Competence Centre (BCCC) in Munich, the BMW Group
is developing battery cells for future generations of high-voltage
batteries. As part of this process, numerous test series are
conducted, which by their very nature require significant time and
material investment. At the same time, these tests tie up
manufacturing equipment and laboratory capacity. This is where the
“Insight” research project comes in: Its artificial intelligence
network uses existing test data, as well as real-time data from
ongoing production, to accurately predict battery cell process
parameters and performance data. As a result, the duration and number
of test series can be significantly reduced, while maintaining or
improving quality. In this way, the newly developed AI systems reduce
the material and time required in individual process steps by more
than 50 percent.

Other cell production use cases

The research project’s prediction models not only reduce the number
of test series but also support final approval of battery cells.
Following initial charging at the end of production, the cells must be
stored for a defined period at precisely specified temperatures before
they can be installed in a battery housing. This phase, also referred
to as the “quarantine”, requires corresponding storage capacity.
However, the research project’s AI systems are able to conduct a full
analysis of the battery cells in advance, potentially eliminating this
process step in the future.

Research collaboration combines theory and practice

Since the project was launched in 2024, the BMW Group and the
University of Zagreb have been developing joint solutions using
artificial intelligence to improve battery cell production. To this
end, doctoral candidates and students at the University of Zagreb are
collating and structuring available production data and using it to
create AI models that can identify specific patterns. These AI models
then make predictions that further optimise production performance,
quality and costs. “We are working on scaling the newly developed AI
models from the prototype environment,” explains Christian
Siedelhofer, head of Technology Development Lithium-Ion Battery Cells
at the BMW Group. One option would be to enable cell manufacturers.
“We are also examining to what extent these models are suitable for
additional use cases within our production network.”

Win-win through knowledge sharing

The University of Zagreb contributes expertise in mechanical
engineering, electrical engineering and computer science to the
project. Ongoing knowledge sharing benefits both partners: The
University of Zagreb provides the BMW Group with access to the latest
research findings, while its doctoral candidates and students have the
opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice.

Development of young talent

Another aspect of the cooperation is the development of young talent.
“Our joint project gets doctoral candidates and students interested in
AI and battery cells and the exciting work we do at our Battery Cell
Competence Centres,” says Stefan Kerscher, head of Technology
Development Battery Cells at the BMW Group. “We are delighted when
young talents decide to embark on a career with our company.” The
cooperation offers students intensive mentoring and the opportunity to
expand their professional network across the industry, enhancing their
attractiveness on the job market and opening up outstanding career
opportunities. The cooperation between the BMW Group and the
University of Zagreb strengthens the innovation capability and
competitiveness of both partners.

Battery cell expertise along the entire value chain

The BMW Group consolidates its battery cell know-how at its
Competence Centres in Munich, Parsdorf and Salching. The Battery Cell
Competence Centre (BCCC) in Munich houses research and development for
the battery cells of the future. The best battery concept from the
BCCC will be produced under near-series conditions at the Cell
Manufacturing Competence Centre (CMCC) in Parsdorf. Close
cross-divisional collaboration between Development, Purchasing and
Production integrates product and process in a unique way. In addition
to producing sample cells, the BMW Group is also focusing its efforts
on the reuse of materials. As part of this process, the company has
put into service a Cell Recycling Competence Centre (CRCC) in
Salching, Lower Bavaria, together with Encory GmbH, which will
implement the innovative direct recycling concept. The intellectual
property for the recycling method is owned by the BMW Group.

Press Contact: Rami Joudi
Tel: +971-56-507-5762
E-mail: rami.joudi@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Research & Development,Locations,Sustainability,Drive Technologies,Mobility of the future,Production,Production Plants,Artificial Intelligence,Battery Cells,Munich

<pp:caseid>813655</pp:caseid><pp:summary>+++ Technology-open approach as strategic success factor +++ For the first time at BMW: five drivetrain variants in one vehicle +++ HyMoS initiative to promote development of local hydrogen ecosystems +++</pp:summary>

Munich. The BMW Group is launching a vehicle with
five different drivetrain technologies. The new BMW X5 will be the
first model to offer customers a choice of battery electric, plug-in
hybrid, petrol, diesel, and hydrogen fuel cell technology. The HyMoS
(Hydrogen Mobility at Scale) initiative is designed to promote the
development of hydrogen ecosystems and refueling stations in
metropolitan areas and aims for an initial pilot implementation in Germany.

“By launching the new BMW X5 with a choice of five drive system
variants, we are once again demonstrating our leading position as a
technology pioneer,” says Joachim Post, Member of the Board of
Management of BMW AG, Development at an BMW event in New
York. “Hydrogen has an essential part to play in global
decarbonisation, which is why we are committed to driving the
technology forward.”

Technology-open approach is a strategic success factor

Product diversity continues to be a key success factor for the BMW
Group. A wide-ranging portfolio of drive systems – encompassing ICE
engines, plug-in hybrids, battery electric drive systems and, starting
with the new BMW iX5 Hydrogen in 2028, hydrogen fuel
cell technology – lays the foundations for successfully meeting the
varying demands and needs of customers worldwide both now and in the future.

Flexible manufacturing structures and high
levels of integration expertise enable this array of drive
technologies to be implemented efficiently in the new BMW X5 range in
terms of development, purchasing and production. This means the BMW
model line-up will include two types of fully electric drivetrain
(battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell) from 2028, underlining the
rigorous application of the brand’s technology-open approach.

The new BMW iX5 Hydrogen

Following successful testing of the pilot fleet worldwide, the new
BMW iX5 Hydrogen* will enter the market as the brand’s first-ever
series-produced hydrogen-powered model. “The new BMW iX5 Hydrogen
will be a true BMW - pioneering in its class and delivering the BMW
typical driving pleasure,” says Michael Rath, Vice President
Hydrogen Vehicles BMW Group.

The drive technology is based on the third-generation
fuel cell system that the BMW Group is developing in
collaboration with the Toyota Motor Corporation. This technological
advance paves the way for a system with a more compact design that is
also more powerful and efficient, thereby increasing range and output
at the same time as reducing energy consumption. The company’s
competence centres in Munich and in the BMW Group Plant Steyr are
already building first prototypes. Further drive system components
will come from the BMW Group plant in Landshut.

Benefits of hydrogen-powered technology

Hydrogen is recognized as a promising future energy carrier for
global decarbonization. It acts as an effective storage medium for
renewable energy sources, helping to balance supply and demand and
enabling a more stable and reliable integration of renewables into the
energy grid. Hydrogen is the missing piece for completing the electric
mobility puzzle where battery electric drive systems are not an
optimal solution.

HyMoS initiative: alliance for strengthening the hydrogen infrastructure

As well as developing the new BMW iX5 Hydrogen, BMW is also actively
involved in efforts to expand the hydrogen refueling network. The
HyMoS (Hydrogen Mobility at Scale) initiative was established to
support hydrogen ecosystems for mobility in cooperation with industry
and institutional partners. The aim of this initiative is to increase
the economic viability of hydrogen mobility ecosystems by pooling the
demand for all types of vehicles, including trucks, buses and
passenger cars. This will help to reach an optimal distribution and
usage of hydrogen stations. The initiative supports existing hydrogen
ecosystem projects in achieving their full potential by sharing
experiences across projects and providing ground support of its
industry partners. A pilot phase started with the support of existing
ecosystems in Germany and France to gather experiences for deployment
to further metropolitan areas and a potential later expansion to other countries.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

Munich. BMW Group Plant Steyr is getting ready for
series production of fuel cell systems. The third generation of the
BMW Group’s hydrogen drive system will be manufactured in Steyr from
2028, and the company’s competence centres in Munich and Steyr are
already building the first prototypes. Further drive system components
will come from the technology hub in Landshut.

“The launch of the first-ever fuel cell production model from BMW in
2028 will add another exceptionally efficient high-performance drive
system with zero emissions to our technology-open product portfolio,”
says Joachim Post, Member of the Board of Management of BMW
AG, Development. “The choice of Steyr as the production
location clearly demonstrates our commitment to a European innovation
footprint. The BMW competence centres in Munich and Steyr have a key
role to play in the development of pioneering fuel cell systems.”

The third-generation BMW fuel cell system: more compact, more
powerful, more efficient

The first generation of the fuel cell drive system was supplied
entirely by the Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) and was fitted in
the BMW 535iA back in 2014. The second generation made its debut in
the current BMW iX5 Hydrogen pilot fleet. This time, BMW developed the
overall fuel cell system itself, while the individual fuel cells came
from Toyota.

For the new generation, the BMW Group and the Toyota Motor
Corporation jointly develop the powertrain system for passenger
vehicles, with the core fuel cell technology creating synergies for
both commercial and passenger vehicle applications. This close
collaboration enables both companies to leverage synergies in
development and procurement while creating brand-specific models.

The third generation of fuel cell technology brings some major improvements:

Compact design: The space taken up by the fuel cell
system has been reduced by around 25%. A considerable increase in
power density has enabled a much more compact construction compared
to the preceding generation.

High degree of integration: The third generation
can be seamlessly integrated into future vehicle architectures. This
paves the way for a technology-open approach that will make it
possible to offer customers a variety of drive system variants in future.

Optimised components and increased efficiency: The
system is set to be substantially more efficient than its
predecessor. This is being achieved by upgrading individual
component parts that are based on the drive technology jointly
developed with Toyota and by improved operating strategies. These
advances result in increased range and output combined with lower
energy consumption, which represents a significant improvement over
the second generation.

Technological expertise at the BMW Group in Munich

The BMW Group is making prototypes of the highly efficient fuel cell
systems at the company’s competence centre for hydrogen in Munich. An
electrochemical reaction takes place in the fuel cell, which involves
hydrogen from the tanks reacting with oxygen from the air. This
reaction produces electricity that powers the electric motor and
thereby supplies the vehicle with energy.

The fuel cell system comprises not only the fuel cells themselves,
but also all the components and systems needed for their efficient
operation. These include the cooling system and hydrogen- and air
subsystems. The compact layout ensures the entire drivetrain delivers
the levels of performance and safety for which BMW is renowned.

Prototype production is currently focused
on development and validation of the assembly and testing processes,
with particular attention paid to industrialisation, quality assurance
and scalability in the longer term. In parallel to this, the
prototypes are being used to develop operating strategy and for
validation on both a system and vehicle level. These steps are crucial
in preparing fuel cell technology for series production.

Series production at BMW Group Plant Steyr

Production of the fuel cell systems is due to get underway in 2028 at
BMW Group Plant Steyr, which can call on decades of development and
production expertise covering all drive system types across the BMW
Group model range. New test rigs and production facilities are now
being built and buildings modified to incorporate the new drive
technology and constantly refine it.

“We are proud to be producing another innovative drive technology at
Plant Steyr in future alongside the latest generation of electric
motors and combustion engines,” says Klaus von Moltke, Senior Vice
President Engine Production at BMW AG and Director of BMW Group Plant
Steyr. “This, together with the development expertise we have
available on-site, makes our plant a prime example of the BMW Group’s
technology-open approach.”

Component manufacture at BMW Group Plant Landshut

BMW Group Plant Landshut is responsible for manufacturing key
components for the fuel cell vehicles. Construction of new hardware
and equipment for series production of the hydrogen-specific BMW
Energy Master will start there in late May 2026. The BMW Energy Master controls the supply of power
in the vehicle across a range from 400 – 800V. It also acts as the
interface for data from the high-voltage battery. This control unit is
supplemented by various components that are specifically required for
the fuel cell application. Production of the first prototypes of the
hydrogen-specific Energy Master will begin in mid-2026 just a few
miles away at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing, where the prototypes of the
BMW Energy Master for the Neue Klasse models were also made.

As with the BMW iX5 Hydrogen pilot fleet, Plant Landshut will once
again manufacture the housing and pressure plate for the next model generation.

Press Contact: Rami Joudi
Tel: +971-56-507-5762
E-mail: rami.joudi@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Research & Development,Drive Technologies

Munich/Steyr (Austria). The BMW Group Plant Steyr
today began series production of the e-engine for the Neue Klasse.
“Today, we are laying the foundations for the future of the BMW
Group,” explained Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management
of BMW AG responsible for Production. “As the first production site
for the Gen6 electric engine, Plant Steyr is central to the Neue
Klasse and the continued development of our global production
network.” The electric engine for the sixth generation of BMW eDrive
(Gen6) is the first fully-electric drive train to be produced at the
Steyr location in Austria. From there, it will be shipped throughout
the production network, providing the drive train for the Neue Klasse.
“Three years ago, we announced that we would build this electric
engine in Steyr. Today, we are proud to deliver it,” said Klaus von
Moltke, SVP of Engine Production for BMW AG and plant director of the
Steyr facility. “What we are launching here today is more than just a
production ramp-up. It is a firm commitment to Europe, to technology
and to the future.”

Technology openness: Plant Steyr as centre of drive train expertise

Between the project launch in 2022 and 2030, the BMW Group is
investing over one billion euros in expanding development and
production expertise for e-drives at the Steyr location. This capacity
expansion will ensure the plant remains the BMW Group's leading
location for drive trains. For over 40 years, the plant has developed
and manufactured internal combustion engines for the BMW and MINI
brands. This extensive experience and wealth of expertise in drive
trains make the engine plant the ideal facility to produce the Gen6
electric engines. The site will continue to manufacture diesel and
petrol engines in parallel. “Technology openness is our strength – it
gives us the necessary flexibility to secure long-term jobs,” said von
Moltke. Around 1,000 employees will work in the new electric engine
assembly. Depending on global demand, half of the Steyr location’s
total workforce could be employed in e-mobility by 2030. von Moltke:
“Steyr will remain the heart of our drive train expertise – both for
combustion engines and electromobility.”

Rotor, stator, transmission and inverter – all core components of the
innovative, highly integrated e-drive – will be manufactured at Plant
Steyr. The housing for the electric engine will be cast at Plant
Landshut's aluminium foundry and further processed in Steyr. The
inverter will be produced in a new in-house clean-room environment,
marking the Austrian engine manufacturer’s entry into the field of
electrical engineering. E-drive components from Steyr will be
assembled on two new lines. The overall production concept for the
Gen6 e-drive follows the principle of a modular system, making it
possible to produce different highly flexible electric drive train
derivatives for the entire range of Neue Klasse models. The modular
concept generates positive economies of scale and cost savings in both
development and production. It also improves the scalability of
production volumes and keeps production, supply networks and
procurement highly flexible.

Comprehensive improvements to electric engine

The electric engine has undergone significant further development for
Gen6: The rotor, stator and inverter have all been holistically
designed for the Gen6 technology’s new 800-volt architecture,
maximising performance capabilities and the efficiency of the drive
system. In the inverter, 800-volt technology and silicon carbide (SiC)
semiconductor technology are now being used to boost efficiency. Fully
integrated into the electric engine housing, the inverter converts
direct current from the high-voltage battery into alternating current
for the electric engine.

Lower weight, costs and energy loss lead to greater vehicle efficiency

Overall, the intelligent use of new technologies in the e-drive and
systematic further development of existing systems produce remarkable
results. Comparing the future BMW iX3 50 xDrive with a Gen5 xDrive
model shows the following improvements in the electric engine: “Energy
loss is reduced by 40 percent, costs by 20 percent and weight by 10
percent. All this makes a significant contribution to the
approximately 20-percent increase in overall vehicle efficiency”,
explains Martin Kaufmann, SVP of global Powertrain Development at BMW
AG. The efficient design of the powertrain together with the high
energy content of the high-voltage battery, enable a range of up to
800 km (WLTP) in the BMW iX3 50 xDrive, the first model of the Neue Klasse.

Four elements, one goal: consistent driver focus in
characteristic BMW style.
The new BMW iDrive merges
four central elements into a unique display and operating concept.

BMW Panoramic Vision – a Head-Up Display concept
newly developed by BMW for projecting content – reflects visible
information from A-pillar to A-pillar onto a black printed surface
in the lower section of the windscreen. This information is visible
to all occupants.
The most important driving information is
projected directly into the driver's line of sight on the left-hand
side of the BMW Panoramic Vision (in left-hand-drive cars), above
the steering wheel. The driver can personalise the content in the
central and right-hand areas of the BMW Panoramic Vision via the
central display. The integration of the BMW Panoramic Vision creates
a 3D effect for the driver and passengers.

The new and optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display above
the BMW Panoramic Vision now shows integrated navigation and
automated driving information directly in the driver’s field of
vision. The content in the BMW Panoramic Vision and BMW 3D Head-Up
Display is presented in a neatly coordinated way.
The level of
innovation achieved by the two Head-Up display technologies is
underlined by several patent applications from the BMW Group
resulting from the development of these projection technologies.

On the central display with matrix backlight
technology, the familiar, updated menu structure with QuickSelect
ensures optimal operation of the functions and content by touch.
Operation is very easy and convenient, as the free-cut-design
display is located close to the steering wheel in an ergonomically
ideal position. Selected content (widgets) can be carried over to
the BMW Panoramic Vision with a swipe on the central display. As
many as six widgets are possible and they can be arranged as desired
in the BMW Panoramic Vision.

The new multifunction steering wheel uses BMW’s
shy-tech approach, whereby the relevant buttons are illuminated to
highlight available functions. The steering wheel serves as the
primary physical control, and its buttons provide active haptic
feedback. The buttons have a well-judged, relief-like surface, which
makes them extremely easy to locate and means the driver can press
them without needing to divert their gaze away from the
road.
The arrangement of the buttons follows the familiar
principle of driver assistance functions being positioned on the
left-hand side of the steering wheel and content-controlling
functions on the right-hand side.

The combination of these four elements re-interprets BMW’s customary
“hands on the wheel, eyes on the road” approach, with which BMW sets
the benchmark for driver focus and presents a unique form of
intuitive, use-friendly and ergonomically optimised operation. The BMW
Panoramic iDrive always gives the driver the right information in the
right place and at the right time. The system continues the approach
of using an optimal combination of analogue and digital controls
through the use of switches, buttons, touch and voice control. There
are haptic switches for the windscreen wipers, turn signal indicators,
exterior mirrors, volume control, gear selectors and window de-icers.
Other functions are optimised for operation using touch/voice control
or via the multifunction steering wheel, such as telephone functions,
media control systems, navigation, assisted driving, personalisation
of displays, selection of MyModes and much more besides.

Alongside data-driven learnings on the use of BMW Operating Systems
across the global fleet of now more than 22 million connected BMW
vehicles, the development phase of the new BMW Panoramic iDrive also
included numerous studies conducted in the BMW Group’s usability labs,
in which around 3,000 customers were involved. Every decision on the
various aspects of the operating logic is therefore based on data and
made in a structured manner. Here, the user experience’s extended
scope for personalisation has also been aligned with customer
preferences and requirements.

BMW Operating System X: intelligent, versatile, fit for the
future.
The new BMW Operating System X represents an
update of the latest operating system, as used in many BMW models, and
is a wholly in-house development from BMW. Like BMW Operating System
9, it is based on an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software
stack. It offers even greater update and upgrade capability than the
predecessor system, making it both fit for the future and backwards
compatible. It is ready to accommodate additional functions and will
keep vehicles equipped with the new BMW Panoramic iDrive at the
cutting edge of technology over a long period of time.
“The
overall concept of the new BMW Panoramic iDrive with Operating System
X has been enabled by a large technological leap forward,”
says Stephan Durach Senior Vice President Connected Company
BMW Group. “It offers intuitive operation, emotionally
engaging experiences and specific personalisation. The new BMW iDrive
with Operating System X demonstrates the potential of a
software-defined vehicle.”

The expanded intelligence of BMW Operating System X makes it possible
to combine the BMW Panoramic Vision, optional BMW 3D Head-Up Display,
central display and multifunction steering wheel with one another in
such a way that physical and digital experiences merge. For example,
an incoming call initially brings up a graphic on the BMW Panoramic
Vision. At the same time, a symbol on the relevant steering wheel
button that was not previously visible is illuminated in green,
indicating the option of taking the call by pressing the button or
rejecting it with a swipe on the right-hand side of the steering wheel.

When a navigation destination is entered by touch control or voice
command, route guidance alerts are shown on the BMW 3D Head-Up Display
and further information on roads and junctions on the BMW Panoramic
Vision. A whole map overview can be shown on the central display at
any time for broader-scale orientation.

The personalisation of content reaches a new level with BMW Operating
System X. The displays in the Panoramic Vision can be adapted to
personal preferences. In addition, drivers now also have the option of
choosing their own settings for driving attributes such as response
and steering characteristics in the My Mode “Personal”. Moreover,
pictures chosen by the user can be uploaded as backgrounds for the
Central Display and the colourway of the Ambient Lighting and user
interface design adjusted to their particular preferences, creating an
even more personalised driving experience.

The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant responds in the accustomed way
to the prompt “Hey BMW” or can be called up by pressing the respective
button on the multifunction steering wheel. The capabilities of the
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant are being constantly enhanced and
will be taken to a whole new level for the Neue Klasse through the
integration of Large Language Models (LLM). The use of this technology
is focused initially on navigation, allowing the customer to give more
extensive spoken commands using natural language: for example: “Take
me to a charging station which is close to a food store.” At
technology partner Amazon’s booth at CES 2025, visitors can get an
initial impression of these capabilities using a beta version of this
build of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant in a BMW X3.

As with the current infotainment systems from BMW, the BMW
Intelligent Personal Assistant can – if the driver desires – make
suggestions proactively based on user behaviour. This intelligence
expands further with BMW Operating System X. In relevant situations,
the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant highlights driver assistance
systems, which are rarely used by the driver. As a kind of reminder,
the system suggests activating Sport Mode on suitable routes if the
driver has already activated Sport Mode independently beforehand. If
the driver doesn’t respond to or ignores these proactive suggestions
several times, the system learns and refrains from making suggestions
from then on.

BMW Operating System X carries over the scope for integration of
third-party apps from the previous infotainment generation. As things
stand, the BMW ConnectedDrive Store offers more than 60 apps worldwide
for BMW Operating System 9. The selection will continue to grow, e.g.
with productivity apps such as video conferencing service Zoom.

Design and technology for a unique user and driving
experience.
The new BMW Panoramic iDrive is scalable and
will be integrated into all new BMW models – across all vehicle
segments and with all drive system technologies – from the end of 2025.

The driving experience takes centre stage. The driver should feel at
ease and have full control over the vehicle. This principle is
reflected in the design of the new BMW Panoramic iDrive. Particular
attention is paid to the details: the user interface has been designed
as intuitively and adaptively as possible to ensure seamless
interaction. The result is a holistic experience enhanced by a
harmonious combination of sound, light and innovative design. Every
journey becomes a special moment of connection between human and
vehicle.
“Technology and customer preferences are changing more
quickly than ever. The design of digital experiences and sound is
playing an ever more important role,” says Adrian van
Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “The new
BMW Panoramic iDrive not only makes our vehicles smarter and more
user-friendly, it also enables much more extensive personalisation,
which turns every new BMW into a car that is very much the user’s
own.”
Another element in the holistic experience provided by the
BMW Panoramic iDrive is the new HypersonX sound experience in the Neue
Klasse models. Developed by the BMW Group Sound Design Studio, it
comprises 43 sound signals and special driving sounds for Personal
Mode and Sport Mode. The multi-dimensional spectrum adapts the sounds
precisely to the driving situation at hand and, in so doing, creates
an emotional interaction between the driver and their BMW.

Press Contact: Daniil Vintsingerode
Tel: +971526100810
E-mail: daniil.vintsingerode@partner.bmw.com

Press Release,Research & Development,Drive Technologies,ConnectedDrive,Mobility of the future,Driver Assistance,Infotainment & Entertainment

BMW to launch first-ever series production fuel cell vehicle in 2028. Both companies are promoting hydrogen infrastructure development.</pp:summary>

Munich. BMW plans to launch its first-ever series
production fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) in 2028, thereby offering
customers an additional all-electric powertrain option with zero local
emissions in a BMW. The BMW Group and the Toyota Motor Corporation are
pooling their innovative strength and their technological capabilities
to bring a new generation of fuel cell powertrain technology to the
roads. Both companies share the aspiration of advancing the hydrogen
economy and have extended their collaboration to push this locally
zero-emission technology to the next level.

The BMW Group’s leading development expertise in electric drive
technologies is once again demonstrated by its relentless efforts to
advance hydrogen fuel cell technology and its embracing of a
'technology-openness' approach in order to provide customers with a
range of mobility solutions for the future.

“This is a milestone in automotive history: the first-ever series
production fuel cell vehicle to be offered by a global premium
manufacturer. Powered by hydrogen and driven by the spirit of our
cooperation, it will underscore how technological progress is shaping
future mobility,” said Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of
Management of BMW AG. “And it will herald an era of
significant demand for fuel cell electric vehicles.”

Koji Sato, President and Member of the Board of Management
(Representative Director) Toyota Motor Corporation, said,
“We are pleased that the collaboration between BMW and Toyota has
entered a new stage. In our long history of partnership, we have
confirmed that BMW and Toyota share the same passion for cars and
belief in ‘technology openness’ and a ‘multi-pathway’ approach to
carbon neutrality. Based on these shared values, we will deepen our
collaboration in efforts such as the joint development of
next-generation fuel cell systems and the expansion of infrastructure,
aiming for the realization of a hydrogen society. We will accelerate
our efforts together with BMW and partners across various industries
to realize a future where hydrogen energy supports society."

Shared powertrain technology utilized across individual models
to offer attractive FCEV options.

The BMW Group and the Toyota Motor Corporation will jointly develop
the powertrain system for passenger vehicles, with the core fuel cell
technology (the individual third-generation fuel cells) creating
synergies for both commercial and passenger vehicle applications. The
result of this collaborative effort will be utilized in individual
models from both BMW and Toyota and will expand the range of FCEV
options available to customers, bringing the vision of hydrogen
mobility one step closer to reality. Customers can expect the BMW and
Toyota FCEV models to maintain their distinct brand identities and
characteristics, providing them with individual FCEV options to choose
from. Realizing synergies and amalgamating the total volume of
powertrain units by collaborating on development and procurement
promises to drive down the costs of fuel cell technology.

BMW will launch its first hydrogen-powered production model in
2028.

After successfully testing the BMW iX5 Hydrogen pilot fleet
worldwide, the BMW Group is now preparing for series production of
vehicles with hydrogen drive systems in 2028 on the basis of the
jointly developed next-generation powertrain technology. The series
production models will be integrated into BMW’s existing portfolio,
i.e. BMW will offer an existing model in an additional hydrogen fuel
cell drive system variant. As FCEV technology is another electric
vehicle technology, the BMW Group explicitly views it as complementing
the drive technology used by battery electric vehicles (BEV) and next
to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and internal combustion
engines (ICE).

A new level of partnership.

The BMW Group and the Toyota Motor Corporation can look back on over
a decade of trusting and successful collaboration. Building on this,
the companies are now extending their cooperation to accelerate
innovation of next-generation fuel cell powertrain systems and pioneer
this new technology.

Shared vision of advancing the hydrogen economy.

The pathway to realizing the full potential of hydrogen mobility
includes its use in commercial vehicles and the establishment of a
refuelling infrastructure for all mobility applications, including
hydrogen-powered passenger vehicles. Recognizing the complementary
nature of these technologies, the BMW Group and the Toyota Motor
Corporation are supporting the expansion of both hydrogen refuelling
and battery electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Both companies
are encouraging sustainable hydrogen supply by creating demand,
working closely with companies that are building low-carbon hydrogen
production, distribution, and refuelling facilities.

The BMW Group and Toyota Motor Corporation are advocating the
creation of a conducive framework by governments and investors to
facilitate the early-stage penetration of hydrogen mobility and ensure
its economic viability. By promoting the corresponding infrastructure,
they aim to establish the FCEV market as an additional pillar
alongside other powertrain technologies. Furthermore, the companies
are seeking regional or local projects to further drive the
development of hydrogen infrastructure through collaborative initiatives.

Benefits of hydrogen-powered technology.

Munich/Dubai. The vehicles in the BMW iX5 Hydrogen
pilot fleet, which launched in February this year, have completed an
intensive round of hot-weather testing in the United Arab Emirates for
the first time. The car’s fuel cell drive system performed
impressively in the face of temperatures rising to 45°C, as well as
sand and dust, varying gradients and significant fluctuations in humidity.

The highly efficient fuel cell system, the two hydrogen tanks,
the electric motor and the power battery teamed up with the central
vehicle control unit to demonstrate their outstanding performance and
state of readiness. The Munich-based development team examined both
the functionality of all the electric systems under the extreme
conditions and the provision of the cooling power to enable the full
performance of the vehicle. The vehicles were able to ensure the
driving dynamics for which BMW is renowned.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen goes around the
world
Vehicles from the pilot fleet are currently in
action in Europe, Japan, Korea, China, the USA and the Middle East.
The aim is to shine a spotlight on the everyday usability of
hydrogen-powered vehicles, and beyond that to gain important knowledge
for the development of a potential series-produced model. The BMW
Group is using the pilot fleet to provide support on a regional level
for the development of a refuelling infrastructure which can be used
with 700-bar refuelling technology across all categories of vehicle –
from passenger cars and small vans to buses and heavy-duty commercial
vehicles. Synergies between different areas of application also offer
important scope for developing a strong network of suppliers in
hydrogen technology and reducing costs.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen combines long-distance capability and short
refuelling stops with locally emission-free driving. Provided the
relevant framework is in place, the hydrogen fuel cell technology has
the potential to serve as another pillar in the BMW Group’s future
drive system portfolio.

As part of its ongoing transformation, the BMW Group is applying
a “technology-open” approach when it comes to drive systems. The
company is therefore adapting to different customer requirements,
infrastructure standards and political and regulatory landscapes in
the various regions of the world. This flexibility puts the BMW Group
in the position to respond quickly to changing requirements in the
markets in any situation and to present an attractive offer for as
many customers as possible at all times.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen has a fuel cell system generating output of
125 kW/170 hp and a highly integrated drive unit using
fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology (the electric motor,
transmission and power electronics are grouped together in a compact
housing). The output of the overall drive system is 295 kW / 401 hp.
The hydrogen needed to power the fuel cell is stored in a pair of
700-bar tanks made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).
Together, these tanks can hold around six kilograms of hydrogen. This
storage capacity gives the BMW iX5 Hydrogen a range of 504 km (313
miles) in the WLTP cycle.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Research & Development,Sustainability,Drive Technologies,Mobility of the future,Production,G05,iX5 Hydrogen

Munich. The BMW Group is accelerating its development
for the battery technology of the future, thereby supporting the
ramp-up of a European cell and battery value chain. In this context,
Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, today
received a grant decision from the Federal Minister of Economics and
Energy, Peter Altmaier, as well as from the Bavarian Minister of State
for Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, Hubert
Aiwanger, in support of the BMW Group's battery projects within the
framework of the battery IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Intertest).

For the BMW Group, it is clear that high-performance and sustainable
energy storage systems are the key success factor for the individual
mobility of the future. The development of highly innovative and
sustainable battery cells is therefore one key element of a
high-performance European cell and battery value chain.

This aspiration is reflected in the Neue Klasse, which the BMW Group
first presented at its annual conference in March. This new generation
of vehicles, which will be launched by the middle of this decade, will
be uncompromisingly electric, digital, circular – and clearly focused
on all-electric drivetrains.

For the Neue Klasse, the BMW Group is developing the next
generation of its battery technology – combined with a clear
aspiration: "With the Neue Klasse, we will make a big leap in
technology in electric drive," said Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the
Board of Management of BMW AG, in Munich on Monday. "We want to
significantly increase the energy density of the cells and reduce the
costs of material use and production at the same time. We will also
significantly reduce the use of primary material to ensure a truly
'green' battery."

With the Neue Klasse, the BMW Group aims at the level of
state-of-the-art internal combustion engines in terms of range and
manufacturing costs. For example, electric mobility "engineered
by BMW" is intended to appeal to and convince new groups of
buyers worldwide. For this sixth generation of BMW e-drive technology,
the company evaluates correspondingly different cell formats, cell
chemistry and also cell modules in the current development phase. A
key goal is to create truly green, low-carbon and recyclable batteries.

Solid-state battery for serial use – demonstrator
vehicle well before 2025

However, the BMW Group is already planning further into the future
beyond this next generation: By the end of the decade, the energy
density of battery cells is expected to increase by at least a
mid-double-digit percentage range – from an already high level today.

Frank Weber, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG,
Development: "The greenest electric car in the world will be a
BMW – sustainable from the initial idea to recycling after its use
phase. We are developing the battery cell of the future: it will be
powerful, safe, cost-effective, and recyclable - from material
selection to recyclability after the use in the vehicle. All of this
will be created in a European value chain." Weber continues:
"We are doing intensive research on solid-state battery
technology. By the end of the decade, we will be implementing an
automotive-compatible solid-state battery for series production. We
plan to show a first demonstrator vehicle featuring this technology
well before 2025."

The BMW Group has had extensive in-house expertise in the complete
value chain of electric drive for years and has optimized its battery
cell technology from generation to generation. Cell chemistry has also
been consistently further developed: for example, the proportion of
cobalt in cathode material in the transition from Gen3 from the BMW i3
to Gen5, which was introduced in 2020 with the BMW iX3, was
significantly reduced from 33 percent to 10 percent – at the same
time, the nickel content rose to around 80 percent. In order to
minimize the consumption of primary resources, up to 50 percent
recycled nickel is already used in the high-voltage battery pack of
the new BMW iX.

Electric offensive in full swing

Thanks to intelligent vehicle architectures and a highly flexible
production network, the BMW Group will have around a dozen
all-electric models on the road as early as 2023. In addition to the
BMW i3, MINI Cooper SE and BMW iX3, which are already on the market,
two key innovation drivers, the BMW i4 and the BMW iX will be put on
the road this year– the BMW i4 even three months earlier than
originally planned.

In the coming years, all-electric versions of the high-volume BMW 5
Series and the BMW X1 will follow. In addition, there will be an
all-electric BMW 7 Series as well as the successor to the MINI
Countryman and other models. As early as 2023, the BMW Group will have
at least one all-electric model on the road in around 90 percent of
its current market segments.

By 2025, the BMW Group will increase sales of all-electric models by
an average of significantly more than 50 percent per year – more than
ten times more than in 2020. In total, the company will have delivered
around two million all-electric vehicles to customers by the end of 2025.

Based on current market expectations, the BMW Group is planning that
by 2030 at least 50 percent of its global sales will consist of
all-electric vehicles. In total, the company will bring about ten
million all-electric vehicles onto the road over the approximately
next ten years. This also means that the BMW Group is strategically on
target of achieving the EU's ambitious CO2 reduction targets in 2025
and 2030.

The BMW Group commitment to IPCEI.

Within the framework of the two battery IPCEI (Important Projects of
Common European Interest), the BMW Group is developing highly
innovative, sustainable, function-optimized and cost-effective battery
cells as a key element of a European cell and battery value chain

The Federal Ministry of Economics and the Bavarian State Ministry for
Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, support the project
within the framework of the European funding process IPCEI.

Federal Minister Altmaier: "With the joint European projects, we
have successfully built up the battery value chain in Germany and
Europe and secured sustainable jobs. We support BMW in two concrete
projects in the field of battery technology. Both projects are central
to the further expansion of electromobility in Germany."

Bavaria's Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger: "The
development of battery cells is an ideal fit for Bavaria's automotive
industry and tech-industry as a whole. Bavaria is supporting this
IPCEI project from BMW with co-financing in order to secure added
value in a central high-tech field with great future potential.
Because electromobility is becoming increasingly important, we have to
produce the battery cells needed here in Germany, preferably in
Bavaria. Our aim must be to participate economically in this
climate-friendly technology and to make Europe more independent of
suppliers from third countries."

Following the development of a next generation of lithium-ion cells
as well as an innovative battery module and battery system concept in
the first IPCEI, the focus of BMW's work in the second IPCEI is on the
development of the next generation of lithium-ion cells, the
development and optimization of process technologies as well as the
construction of a prototype production plant for innovative battery
modules and systems.

The BMW Group is also focusing on the recycling and the recyclability
of battery materials, with the main aim of achieving a fully cyclable battery.

Through the research and validation of future technologies such as
solid-state batteries (so-called "All-Solid-State-Battery",
ASSB), the company not only strengthens its own competence, but also
the industrial location Germany. The BMW Group sees ASSB technology as
a game changer in the automotive field.

Following the holistic approach of a closed innovation and
development cycle, BMW will develop innovative products from the areas
of battery cell as well as battery modules and systems with a focus on
improved functionality and a significantly improved cost structure.
The recycling and the usability of the batteries after their
automotive use are also taken into account.

The BMW Group is more involved in the research, development and
industrialization of battery value chains in Germany than any other
vehicle manufacturer. The research results achieved by the BMW Group
and the partners involved in the IPCEI project strengthen the
development of an integrated European battery value chain. In
addition, various concepts for solid-state batteries are being
researched together with European R&D partners and the most
promising prototype is being implemented. In doing so, the company is
paving the way for successful battery cell development and production
in Europe.
Hello everyone!

A very warm welcome to the world premiere of the BMW iX3.

At BMW, we have always been at the forefront of sustainable mobility.
We continue to push forward at a fast pace – always focusing on the
needs of our customers.

Already back in 2007, we began a new era of sheer electric driving
pleasure with “project i”. And around 180,000 customers of the fully
electric BMW i3 are proof of this. Today, with our broad range of
plug-in hybrids, customers can enjoy electrified driving in all of our
model segments.

Now we are rapidly expanding our line-up of pure electric vehicles:
Just think of the very cool MINI Electric – and now our first pure
electric Sports Activity Vehicle, the BMW iX3. Next year you can look
forward to the BMW i4 and the iNEXT. And I promise you, there will be
many more to come.

Our timing is perfect, because customer demand is rising.

And with convenient charging solutions at home or at work, we will
boost demand even more.

At BMW, we think well beyond the vehicle itself. For us, it's all
about making a true difference. And that's why we have decided to
implement a completely new and even more comprehensive strategy for sustainability.

We will focus on three areas:

To further strengthen our position as a role model when it comes
to sustainable, resource-saving production.

Creating a sustainable, CO2 neutral supply chain.

The utilization phase of our vehicles concerning CO2
emissions. We will further reduce our CO2 emissions, even
beyond the EU target.

All of this shows: We consistently take a sustainable approach across
the entire value chain. This is what sets us apart.

Here are a few examples which underline this:

In production, we reduced our CO2 emissions per vehicle by
25 percent last year, compared to 2018. We are sourcing all of our
external power from renewable energy.

And we are working hand in hand with our suppliers to reduce our
CO2 footprint in the supply chain. For example, the
production of high-voltage batteries is very energy-intensive. We have
signed contracts with all our cell suppliers: They will only use
renewable energy to produce our fifth-generation battery cells. This
will save around ten million tons of CO2 within the next
ten years. This is roughly the amount of CO2 that a city
like Munich - with almost one and a half million people – emits each year.

We are strongly committed to climate protection. And we put words
into action: We have greatly reduced the CO2 footprint of
our vehicle fleet. In 2020 alone, we will cut it by more than twenty
percent. We are achieving this by offering a wider range of electric
models, and also by increasing the efficiency of our conventional engines.

In Europe we are making excellent progress: Next year, 25 percent of
our fleet will be electrified. In 2025, we will reach 33 percent. And
in 2030, 50 percent of our sales will be electrified.

Ultimately, it's all about the Power of Choice. Our customers will
always be able to choose the right drivetrain for their particular needs.

The BMW X3 clearly embodies our strategy of intelligent and flexible
vehicle platforms. We can fit this model with any drivetrain we need –
and produce them on the same production line. Whatever our customers
demand, we deliver. And I promise you: All variants will have the same
high level of functionality, comfort and quality.

Customers can choose from a range of drivetrains, such as highly
efficient diesel engines with 48 Volt Mild Hybrid support. This is an
important technology for customers who drive long distances. And of
course they fulfill the highest regulatory standards of real-driving emissions.

We also offer the X3 with petrol engines in four different
performance levels, right up to the sporty X3 M. With the new particle
filters and 48 Volt support, they are the cleanest conventional
engines we have ever built.

The X3 is also available as a plug-in hybrid, making it a great
choice for commuters who desire a very low CO2 footprint.

Today we are presenting the BMW iX3, our first fully electric Sports
Activity Vehicle. It is also our first model to feature our
self-developed and self-produced Gen5 electric drivetrain. It is
highly integrated, without any rare earth materials, and extremely
efficient. The Cobalt and Lithium we use originates from only trusted suppliers.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Please enjoy the world premiere of the fully electric BMW iX3!

This car has taken Efficient Dynamics to the next level. When we
engineered this vehicle, our focus was on achieving an attractive
range. At the same time, we are setting the benchmark in terms of efficiency.

The iX3 offers a range of more than 500 km in the New European
Driving Cycle. And 460 km according to WLTP. And of course it drives
like a BMW.

This creates a sweet spot for our customers: The balance of its low
energy consumption and 150 Kilo-Watt fast-charging is perfect for
every distance, also for long journeys. Our advanced battery
technology makes all of this possible.

For us, it’s always about simplifying our customers’ lives. That’s
why we created BMW Charging. In Europe, that means access to well over
150,000 charging points – and worldwide, at least double that amount.
This is the most comprehensive charging network available.

We have also included a new App that recommends charging stops on
long routes – showing the estimated charging time required. BMW
Charging is one of the many digital innovations that we have developed
for our customers.

The BMW iX3 features our latest BMW Operating System 7. This enables
secure and convenient over-the-air updates. This means your system is
always up to date.

Last but certainly not least, let´s talk about sound. Together with
one of the world's most famous music composers – Hans Zimmer – we are
developing BMW Iconic Sounds for our electric vehicles. The iX3
already features a first composition from this cooperation: Just press
the start / stop button, and you will be surrounded by the full
emotional thrill of electro-mobility. What a sound! I really like it.
And you can look forward to even more BMW iconic sounds in the future.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

At BMW, we are fully committed to climate protection and sustainable
mobility. Our aspiration is to provide sustainable driving pleasure
for our customers, no matter where they are around the world.

I promise you there will be many more exciting emission-free vehicles
to come. So, stay tuned. Thank you for joining us today!

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Research & Development,Drive Technologies,Mobility of the future,Speeches & Statements,Speech,G08,iX3,Product,BMW

New BMW iX3 will be the brand’s first model to also be produced for
export at the Shenyang manufacturing facility in China. Market launch
will begin in China later in 2020.

Strategic “Power of Choice” approach covers broad spread of customer
requirements and statutory regulations around the world: BMW X3 is
the first model to be available with a petrol or diesel engine,
plug-in hybrid drive system or all-electric drive system.

New BMW iX3 blazes a trail for fifth-generation BMW eDrive
technology. Major progress made in terms of power density, operating
range, weight, installation space requirement and flexibility. Power
density of the electric drive system increased by 30 per cent over the
BMW Group’s existing fully electric vehicles; gravimetric energy
density of the high-voltage battery at cell level up by 20 per cent.
Latest versions of the electric motor, power electronics, charging
technology and high-voltage battery (all developed in-house) will also
be deployed in the BMW iNEXT and BMW i4 from 2021.

Efficiency boosted significantly compared with the BMW i3 by highly
integrated drive system technology. Electric motor, power electronics
and transmission arranged in a central housing for the first time.
Fifth-generation BMW eDrive high-voltage battery with the latest
battery cell technology and gross energy content of 80 kWh enables
operating range of up to 460 kilometres [285 miles] in the statutory
new WLTP test cycle (up to 520 kilometres [323 miles] in the NEDC test
cycle). BMW Group monitors compliance with environmental and social
standards as part of its procurement process for the lithium and
cobalt used in battery cells.

Newly designed fifth-generation BMW eDrive electric motor produces
maximum output of 210 kW/286 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft).
Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h [62 mph] in 6.8 seconds (for purposes
of comparison – BMW X3 30i: 6.4 seconds), top speed (electronically
limited): 180 km/h [112 mph]. The design principle of a
current-excited synchronous motor enables optimised power development
and allows engineers to avoid the use of rare earths.

Scope for varying degrees of recuperation enables choice between
pronounced one-pedal feeling with extensive recuperation of braking
and coasting energy in driving position B and adaptive recuperation
including coasting function in driving position D. Recuperation level
can be adjusted through three stages. Adaptive recuperation enhances
driving comfort and efficiency by adjusting Brake Energy Regeneration
and the coasting function to the driving situation at hand.

Power transfer to the rear wheels delivers a classical BMW driving
experience. Unrivalled combination of low electric power consumption
and high charging capacity enables long-distance journeys at high
average speeds. Adaptive suspension (fitted as standard) optimises
sporting responses and comfort.

BMW IconicSounds Electric. Newly developed soundscape for
electrically powered BMW models makes its debut in the BMW iX3 and
adds extra emotional depth to the driving experience. Powerful drive
sound available in cars with the equipment line “Impressive”.
Unmistakable composition when starting and deactivating the electric
drive system developed in collaboration with Hans Zimmer.

Bespoke charging products and services: BMW Charging Card provides
simple and convenient access to currently more than 450,000 public
charging points worldwide ; new Flexible Fast Charger (allowing use of
different socket types) and high-output Wallboxes now available as
options. Individual packages offer the optimum charging solution for
every customer need.

New digital services from BMW Connected Charging in the car and via
the app promote user-friendly electric mobility and enhance navigation
planning, including recommendations for charging stops. Navigation
system factors mid-journey breaks to charge the high-voltage battery
(includes detailed information on individual charging points) into
route planning and calculation of arrival times.

Optimised energy storage concept now enables vehicle charging
capacity of up to 150 kW at DC fast-charging stations; Recharging from
0 to 80 per cent of the high-voltage battery’s capacity takes 34
minutes, 10-minute charge adds 100 kilometres [62 miles] of range
(WLTP). BMW iX3 customers enjoy particularly favourable tariffs at
IONITY fast-charging stations with a consumption dependent component
of e.g. €0.29 per kWh for Germany)

Characteristic proportions of a BMW X model combine with
model-specific design features. Innovative BMW aerodynamic wheels:
19-inch light-alloy items with new, drag-reducing design fitted as standard.

Premium interior ambience with model-specific accents. User-friendly,
variable-usage cabin with high level of comfort for five people over
everyday journeys and longer distances; load capacity can be expanded
from 510 litres to as much as 1,560 litres.

Wide-reaching standard specification (“Inspiring”) includes metallic
paintwork, LED headlights, three-zone automatic climate control with
pre‑heating and pre-conditioning, automatic tailgate operation,
panoramic glass sunroof, Driving Assistant Professional and ambient
lighting. Optional equipment line “Impressive” also brings 20-inch

Munich/Shenyang. The BMW Group is systematically
pursuing its electrification strategy and will release the new BMW iX3
onto the market by the end of 2020. Standard production of the BMW
core brand’s first pure electric model will get underway at the BMW
Brilliance Automotive joint venture (BBA) in China in late summer as
planned: BBA Plant Dadong will produce the first Sports Activity
Vehicle (SAV) with a pure electric drive train for the global market.
The first of these electric vehicles will be delivered to customers by
the end of the year.

The testing required for homologation of the new BMW iX3 has now been
successfully completed and the results submitted to the regulatory
authorities in key automotive markets. “This is the first time we have
completed the entire homologation process for a fully electric model
in China and Europe at the same time. The staff on our testing team
mastered this unique challenge with tremendous dedication and
efficiency,” said Arno Keller, head of Development BMW iX3. More than
340 hours of testing, including over 7700 kilometres of test drives,
had to be completed within four weeks.

Preparations for production of the BMW iX3 were stepped up in
Shenyang in parallel. BBA has been building BMW iX3 pre-production
vehicles at Plant Dadong in Shenyang since the middle of last year.
The 200th pre-production model recently came off the assembly line and
test drives on Chinese roads began – allowing development and test
engineers to make final adjustments.

“We are right on schedule with our BMW iX3 pre-production vehicles
and will launch standard production in late summer, using
state-of-the-art technologies such as custom installation of the new
high-voltage battery and artificial intelligence for monitoring
parts,” explained Robert Küssel, BBA Plant Director Dadong. “We are
also producing the fully-electric BMW iX3 and the BMW X3 with
combustion engine on the same production line. This enables us to
achieve high efficiency and flexibility in production,” Küssel continued.

With the new BMW iX3, the BMW Group is adding another fully-electric
vehicle to its portfolio that will not only tap into new customer
groups, but also arrives on the market at a time when demand for
electric vehicles is expanding significantly. The electric car is
based on the globally successful BMW X3 and combines the versatility
and robust functionality of a premium mid-size Sports Activity Vehicle
with ground-breaking drive technology for locally emission-free
driving pleasure. The BMW X3 is the brand’s first model available with
both conventional petrol and diesel engines, a plug-in hybrid system
or a pure electric drive train. This “Power of Choice” approach allows
the company to respond to the different needs and wants of its
customers worldwide and maximise its impact in reducing global CO2 emissions.

The BMW iX3 already comes with fifth-generation BMW eDrive
technology, including a drive unit with the electric engine, power
electronics and transmission highly integrated into a central housing.
This significantly reduces the installation space and mass of the
drive technology relative to output and offers added flexibility for
installing new electric powertrain components in different vehicle
derivatives. A further highlight is the electric motor, which no
longer requires the use of rare earths and ensures the BMW Group is
not depend on their availability.

The fifth-generation electric drive train also includes new and more
powerful high-voltage batteries. Thanks to their scalable, modular
design, these can be used flexibly in the respective vehicle
architecture and at the respective production locations.

With a range of around 440 kilometres in the WLTP test cycle
(preliminary data), the BMW iX3 paves the way for BMW eDrive
technology, which will also be used in BMW i4 and BMW iNEXT models
from 2021 on.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Locations,Drive Technologies,Production Plants,G08,iX3,Industry 4.0,Product,BMW

Munich. The character of the Concept i4 is not only a
product of its design, but also of its visionary sound profile. Hans
Zimmer composed the sound of the BMW Concept i4 together with BMW
sound designer Renzo Vitale under the brand name BMW IconicSounds
Electric. BMW IconicSounds Electric will imbue BMW’s electric models
with extra emotional depth by connecting the driver with the vehicle’s
character on another level through individual tones and sounds.

“Renzo and I were inspired to bring together the past and future of
BMW with the sound for the BMW Concept i4,” explains Zimmer. “We hope
the sound we created is classic yet surprising and has a feeling of
lightness that is fitting for the BMW brand.” The aural repertoire of
the BMW Concept i4 stretches from the driving sounds in the Experience
Mode “Core” to the more intense tones of “Sport”. Acoustic
accompaniments to a door opening and when starting the car are
likewise part of its soundscape.

Sound by Hans Zimmer is the starting signal for electric
driving pleasure.

Hans Zimmer and Renzo Vitale presented the new start/stop sound in
Zimmer’s Santa Monica studio back in November 2019. The ready-to-drive
sound for all-electric BMW models and BMW plug-in hybrids will be
introduced as a standard feature worldwide from July 2020. “The
ability to design the sound in our vehicles makes it possible for us
to spark positive emotions,” says Vitale. “The new start/stop sound is
intended to instil a sense of excitement at the prospect of electric
driving when the customer gets into their vehicle and begins the journey.”

BMW IconicSounds Electric.

The silence of electric drive systems is often cited as a major
benefit of electric mobility. As the choice of electrified models
increases, however, it also means some drivers are missing out on the
emotional appeal of sound. Jens Thiemer, Senior Vice President
Customer and Brand BMW: “Sound has always played an important role in
the emotionalisation of our vehicles. Now we are taking the joy of
sheer driving pleasure to a new level and are particularly pleased to
be working with Hans Zimmer to create the new sound world of electric
mobility at BMW. This collaboration will result in our forward-looking
sound offering for electrified vehicles: BMW IconicSounds Electric.”

The BMW Concept i4 drive sound is the second developed for electric
BMW vehicles with Hans Zimmer, following the presentation of the
electric sound for the BMW Vision M NEXT at the #NEXTGen event in
Munich in June 2019. “We have an extraordinary opportunity to turn
electric driving in a BMW into a very special experience with the help
of great sounds,” Zimmer commented in 2019. “I am relishing the
challenge of co-designing the composition for future electric BMWs.”

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Concept Vehicles & Design,Press Release,Drive Technologies,Mobility of the future,G26,i4,Acoustics, Aerodynamics,Product,BMW

Munich. The BMW Group is consistently driving its
electrification strategy forward and presents new plug-in hybrid
models for an especially popular and dynamically growing vehicle
category. In the new BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e,
the intelligently controlled interaction between a fuel combustion
engine and an electric motor as well as locally emissions-free travel
can be experienced in the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports
Activity Coupe (SAC) premium segment starting in 2020. A highly
efficient electric drive and a latest-generation lithium-ion battery
enable an electrically powered range of up to 57 kilometres* in the
two new plug-in hybrid models. With an average fuel consumption of 2.1
to 1.9 litres per 100 kilometres* and CO2 emissions between 48 and
43 grams per kilometre* for the BMW X1 xDrive25e and 2.1 to 1.9 litres
per 100 kilometres* and between 47 and 43 grams per kilometre* for the
BMW X2 xDrive25e, both models set a benchmark within their competitive
fields. Combined power consumption of the BMW X1 xDrive25e is 14.3 to
13.8 kWh per 100 kilometres*, the corresponding values of the
BMW X2 xDrive25e are 14.2 to 13.7 kWh per 100 kilometres*. The hybrid
specific all-wheel drive with its fast and precise distribution of
power between the front and rear wheels delivers a high level of
driving pleasure and thrilling agility.

The two plug-in models are an extension to the wide range of BMW
models in the premium compact segment of SAV and SAC vehicles. In
addition to numerous variants featuring extremely efficient petrol and
diesel engines, models with electrified drive will be on offer for the
first time. Thus, the portfolio will include in addition to economical
entry models with a 3-cylinder combustion engine also the new plug-in
hybrid models and the BMW X2 M35i (combined fuel consumption:
7.1 – 6.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 163 – 154 g/km*), the
extremely athletic top model with a maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp.
With the extension of its range in the premium compact segment the BMW
Group’s model offensive is gaining further momentum in the area of
plug-in hybrid models. The current selection comprises the
MINI Cooper SE Countryman (combined fuel consumption:
2.1 – 1.9 l/100 km; combined power consumption:
13.9 – 13.5 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 47 – 43 g/km*), the
BMW 225xe Active Tourer (combined fuel consumption: 1.9 l/100 km;
combined power consumption: 13.5 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions:
42 g/km*), BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series models and plug-in hybrid
luxury sedans of the BMW 7 Series. In future, four BMW X models with
plug-in hybrid drive will also be available. As a pioneer in electric
mobility BMW intends to have more than one million vehicles with
electrified drive on the road by the end of 2021. By 2021, 25 percent
of the vehicles sold by the BMW Group in Europe will feature an
electric drive. By 2025 this figure is scheduled to reach 33 percent
and 50 percent by 2030. The BMW Group plans to extend their portfolio
by additional 25 electrified vehicles by 2023.

The plug-in hybrid system of the new BMW X1 xDrive 25e and the new
BMW X2 xDrive25e consists of a 1.5 litre 3-cylinder petrol engine with
BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology and an electric drive specially
developed for this model. It is taken from the eDrive technology
modular system of the BMW Group. The petrol engine mobilises a peak
output of 92 kW/125 hp and a maximum torque of 220 Newton metres. It
transfers its power to a 6-speed Steptronic transmission and drives
the front wheels. The electric motor generates an output of 70 kW/95
hp and delivers 165 Nm of torque to the rear wheels via a single-speed
transmission. This makes for a hybrid specific all-wheel drive, which
gives both models a unique level of agility in their competitive
fields delivering hallmark SAV and SAC driving pleasure. The highly
responsive power delivery of the electric motor, which delivers its
full torque spontaneously from standstill, enables the driver to react
extremely quickly to changing driving conditions. In addition, the
position of the electric motor above the rear axle contributes to the
harmoniously balanced axle load distribution of the new BMW X1
xDrive25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e. In conjunction with the
intelligently controlled interaction between the two power units, it
provides maximum driving stability, ride comfort and dynamic response.

Together the combustion engine and electric motor produce a system
output of 162 kW/220 hp. The maximum system torque of both drive units
is 385 Nm. The new BMW X1 xDrive25e accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in
6.9 seconds. The new BMW X2 xDrive25e does the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in
6.8 seconds. In addition, the electric boost provided by the drive
system ensures additional safety reserves and intense sporty flair
when overtaking on country roads, for example. The top speed of the
new BMW X1 xDrive25e is 193 km/h. Maximum speed of the new
BMW X2 xDrive25e is 195 km/h.

With the very latest high-voltage battery cell technology, the new
BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e possess generous
reserves of electrical energy enabling the driver to conduct the main
share of everyday travel locally emissions-free with the electric
motor alone. The latest-generation lithium-ion battery has a gross
energy content of 10 kWh. This allows for an electrically powered
range of between 54 and 57 kilometres* in the BMW X1 xDrive25e
(between 55 and 57 kilometres* in the new BMW X2 xDrive25e). The
high-voltage battery can be charged at conventional household sockets
using the standard-equipment charging cable. An empty battery can be
fully charged in around five hours in this way. It only takes 3.8
hours for the battery to reach 80 percent of its total capacity. Using
a BMW i Wallbox, the relevant charging operation from 0 to 100 percent
takes less than 3.2 hours. 80 percent of total capacity is already
reached after 2.4 hours. The charging socket is located under a
separate flap on the front left side wall of the car.

The driver can use the eDrive button on the centre console to
influence the drive system’s operating mode. In the AUTO eDRIVE
standard setting, the intelligent drive system ensures optimum
interaction between the two power units in all driving situations.
Navigation data is also used to manage the plug-in hybrid system to
increase both efficiency as well as driving pleasure. When navigation
guidance is activated, the anticipatory energy management can also
take into account the route profile for controlling the drive system.
The MAX eDrive mode can be activated for maximum use of the electric
drive. In this mode, the new BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new
BMW X2 xDrive25e reach a top speed of 135 km/h. In addition there is
also the SAVE BATTERY mode. It enables the driver to maintain the
charging state of the high-voltage battery while driving or to
increase it by means of recuperation. In this way battery capacity can
be saved for later use when driving in purely electric mode in the
city for example. The driving experience switch can be used
independent of the drive mode. In the new BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new
BMW X2 xDrive25e, the driver can use this to activate the COMFORT,
SPORT and ECO PRO modes in order to influence the drive and suspension
functions as well as to operate the electrically powered comfort systems.

Due to a long electric range and low CO2 emissions, the new
BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e (depending on equipment)
meet the criteria which have been stipulated for the classification as
an electric vehicle in Germany and the associated preferential
treatment in public road traffic. In addition, it also qualifies for
reduced company car taxation in Germany. Only half the gross list
price is used as a basis when calculating the monetary benefit from
private use of the company car.

The new BMW X1 xDrive25e and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e feature
acoustic pedestrian protection as standard. When driving electrically
at speeds of up to 30 km/h, an unmistakable sound designed
specifically for electrified BMW models is generated to alert other
road users to the approaching car without impairing the acoustic
comfort of the vehicle occupants. In addition, the standard equipment
of the two compact BMW X models with plug-in hybrid drive also
includes 17-inch light alloy wheels, 2-zone automatic air conditioning
as well as auxiliary air conditioning. The interior can be
pre-conditioned remotely via BMW Connected using a smartphone. The new
BMW X1 xDrive25e is available as Advantage, Sport Line, xLine and M
Sport models. For the new BMW X2 xDrive25e customers can choose from
the following models: Advantage, Advantage Plus, M Sport and
M Sport X. In addition to the respective equipment packages, virtually
all options of the conventionally powered BMW X1 or BMW X2 are
available for the plug-in hybrid models.

The positioning of the high-voltage battery underneath the rear seats
not only leads to a very low centre of gravity, which optimises the
agility of the BMW X1 xDrive25 and the new BMW X2 xDrive25e, but also
to a slightly reduced transport capacity compared to the
conventionally powered compact model variants. The luggage compartment
volume is fully available in primary use. In the new BMW X1 xDrive25e
luggage compartment capacity is 450 litres. With a standard split of
40: 20: 40, the folding backrests enable this to be increased to 1,470
litres. A trailer tow hitch with detachable ballhead is optionally
available for the new BMW X1 xDrive25e. The maximum trailer load is
750 kilograms.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

Munich. The heart of the BMW brand beats in the
premium segment of the mid-range category. Along with the BMW 4 Series
Coupé, BMW 4 Series Convertible and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé models, it
is the BMW 3 Series that brings out the qualities that are key to
hallmark brand driving pleasure in a particularly concentrated form.
Now BMW is transferring the brand's characteristic core features to
the age of electric mobility – the central purpose in developing the
BMW i4. The BMW Group's first purely electrically powered model for
the premium mid-range combines driving dynamics, sporty and elegant
design, premium quality and the spacious comfort and functionality of
a four-door Gran Coupé with locally emissions-free mobility. This
heralds a new era of driving pleasure.

The future of electric mobility will be shaped by fifth-generation
BMW eDrive technology, for which the BMW iX3 – to be produced from
2020 onwards – will act as a pioneer, followed by the BMW iNEXT and
the BMW i4. With fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, which also
includes the latest innovations in the field of battery cells, the BMW
i4 sets new standards in sporty performance, achieving a range of some
600 kilometres.

The development of the BMW i4 is part of a comprehensive product
offensive by the BMW Group in the field of models with electrified
drive. The company currently has the biggest range of all-electric and
plug-in hybrid models within the competitive field. By 2023, the BMW
Group will have 25 models with electrified drive in its program. With
a model portfolio that includes efficient combustion engines as well
as modern plug-in hybrid and purely electric drive, the BMW Group as a
globally operating company is taking into account the varying
requirements and preferences of its customers in different regions of
the world. Irrespective of the type of drive selected, all current and
future models feature hallmark brand driving pleasure as part of their
specific characteristics.

Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology for optimised dynamics,
efficiency and range.

The drive technology of the BMW i4 sets new standards in terms of
power density, efficiency and range in locally emissions-free driving.
The electric motor, power electronics, charging unit and high-voltage
battery have been entirely newly developed. Together they form the BMW
eDrive technology of the fifth generation, with which the BMW Group
has made further significant advancements in the field of electrified
drive. From 2020 onwards, fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology will
be introduced first in the BMW iX3 and then in the BMW iNEXT and BMW
i4. The electric motor developed for the BMW i4 delivers a maximum
output of around 390 kW/530 hp, reaching the level of a V8 engine in
current BMW models fitted with a combustion engine. Its spontaneous
power delivery gives the BMW i4 outstanding performance
characteristics and exceptionally high efficiency.

The fifth generation of BMW eDrive also includes a newly designed
high-voltage battery featuring the latest battery cell technology. The
design of the high-voltage battery developed for the BMW i4 is
characterised by its extremely flat design and optimised energy
density. With a weight of some 550 kilograms, it has an energy content
of around 80 kWh. This gives the BMW i4 a range of approximately 600 kilometres.

Gran Coupé with characteristic design and performance features.

The all-electric BMW i4 will be produced from 2021 onwards and
subsequently launched on the global automotive markets. The new model
will be manufactured at the company's main plant in Munich, where
other vehicles produced include the BMW 3 Series Sedan with
conventional combustion engine and plug-in hybrid drive, the BMW 3
Series Touring with conventional drive and from summer 2020 also with
plug-in hybrid drive, the BMW 4 Series Coupé and the BMW M4 Coupé
(fuel consumption combined: 10.0 – 9.3 l/100 km; combined
CO2 emissions: 227 – 213 g/km). In addition to the sporty,
elegant design that is typical of a 4-door coupé of the brand, the BMW
i4 is characterised by impressive performance features. The BMW i
brand's first Gran Coupé accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in around
4.0 seconds, achieving a top speed of more than 200 km/h.

A flexible vehicle architecture, the flat, low-positioned
high-voltage battery and the compact drive technology create a high
degree of freedom in realising a model-specific design. The BMW i4
combines the characteristic proportions of a 4-door coupé with the
typical design features of a BMW i model. Dynamically stretched lines
and a precise surface design go hand in hand with aerodynamically
optimised exterior features as well as sustainability accentuations
that are specific to BMW i. High entry and exit comfort for the rear
passengers and a spacious, variable interior ensure high suitability
for both day-to-day trips and long-distance travel. As such, the BMW
i4 can be clearly identified as a BMW Gran Coupé – and equally clearly
as an electrically powered vehicle.

Modular, flexible drive and battery storage technology.

The electric drive component of the BMW i4, its charging unit and
high-voltage battery are all developed in-house by the BMW Group.
Production is carried out in-house or according to BMW Group
specifications. Here, the experience gained from development of the
previous generations of BMW eDrive technology is consistently tapped
into with the aim of optimising all components on an ongoing basis.

The BMW Group's comprehensive expertise in the field of electrified
drive systems forms the basis for a scalable modular system whose
components can be integrated into different vehicle concepts with
great flexibility. Fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology comprises a
highly integrated drive system in which the electric motor,
transmission and power electronics are accommodated in a single
housing. This drive system is compatible with all vehicle concepts and
will be available for different models in a range of output levels.
The highly integrated design of the system allows a significant
increase in power density as well as a reduction in weight and
manufacturing effort. Production of future-generation electric motors
will no longer require materials categorised as rare earths.

The next generation charging unit is characterised by a uniform
package suitable for all future vehicle architectures. It can be used
in plug-in hybrid models as well as in purely electrically powered
vehicles and is designed for a charging capacity of up to 150 kW. This
allows the high-voltage battery of the BMW i4 to be charged to around
80 per cent of its full energy content in around 35 minutes. This
results in a charging time of around six minutes for a range of 100 kilometres.

In the field of high-voltage batteries, too, the advancements
introduced with the fifth generation of BMW eDrive technology are
based on the BMW Group's in-depth expertise and years of experience.
The company has an exceptionally high level of know-how both in the
field of battery cell technology and in the manufacture of
model-specific high-voltage batteries. This lays the foundation for
continuous optimisation of the batteries – both in future plug-in
hybrid models and in purely electrically powered vehicles. The BMW
Group has been manufacturing modules and model-specific high-voltage
batteries for vehicles with electrified drive systems since 2013. An
independently developed modular system with a flexible arrangement of
the modules enables integration of batteries developed in-house into
various vehicle concepts. Consistent ongoing development work is
dedicated to optimising the basic characteristics of the battery cells
as well as the structure of the modules and their arrangement in the
respective model-specific storage unit. For example, the batteries
used in the BMW i4 and other future electric vehicles have a higher
number of cells per module, a reduced number of components, a more
compact design and increased flexibility with regard to their geometry.

With the establishment of the Battery Cell Competence Centre in
Munich, the BMW Group has further expanded its research and
development expertise in this area, which is crucial to the future of
electromobility. The focus is on fundamental research in areas where
there is an impact on customer-related factors such as energy density,
accessible peak output, service life, safety, charging
characteristics, response at different temperatures and manufacturing
costs. At the new Battery Cell Competence Centre, research is being
conducted in particular into the potential for further optimisation of
cell chemistry and cell design. The selection and composition of
materials for the anode, cathode, electrolyte and separator as well as
the format of the battery cells made of these materials will have a
key impact on the quality of high-voltage batteries used in future
models with electrified propulsion.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Concept Vehicles & Design,Press Release,Research & Development,Efficient Dynamics,Drive Technologies,Mobility of the future

BMW i and grid operator TenneT pilot new type of charging strategy for electric vehicles using the BMW i3 – Digital integration will turn electric mobility into a mainstay of the energy revolution – Customers can reap the benefits of reduced costs.</pp:summary>

Munich. The BMW Group is working in close
collaboration with power grid operator TenneT to devise groundbreaking
solutions that will turn electric mobility into one of the mainstays
of the energy revolution. An intelligent charge control system
developed for BMW Charging can help to adapt electric vehicle charging
in a way that keeps the power grid stable and makes optimum use of
energy from renewable sources. Following successful deployment in the
USA, the technology’s practicability has now also been demonstrated in
Germany as part of a subsequent pilot project. Providing the platform
for this new solution is the connectivity technology already included
as standard in the all-electric BMW i3.

The BMW Group is aiming to offer its customers ways of charging their
electrified vehicles as easily and cheaply as possible while
minimising the associated emissions. The digital integration of
electric vehicles into the power grid will make it possible to adjust
vehicle charging with customers’ mobility requirements, grid stability
and the availability of renewable energy all factored in. Intelligent
charge control can therefore play a role in preventing power grid
congestion and give priority to green electricity at the same time. As
and when the customer’s mobility schedule allows, charging of suitably
equipped electric vehicles can be briefly decreased – in the event of
an electricity supply shortfall, for example – in order to reduce the
load on the grid. Charging of the high-voltage battery will resume as
soon as the supply bottleneck has been alleviated, ideally at a time
when sufficient reserves of wind or solar energy have accumulated.

Intelligent charge control responds to signals from the grid
operator.

The system of charge control developed for BMW Charging acts as a
link between car and power grid. It registers the grid requirements
signalled by the operator, making it possible to control the charging
of plugged-in electric vehicles for optimum results – whether the
vehicle is hooked up to the electricity grid at a public charging
station, via a BMW Wallbox or using a domestic power socket. The
signals are processed by the digital charge control technology and the
vehicle’s connected electronics.

In the latest pilot project, the team succeeded in recording and
processing signals from grid operator and project partner TenneT that
indicated an imminent grid overload. This allowed charging to be
temporarily decreased in selected BMW i3 cars in response. Electricity
from renewable sources could then be integrated into the grid to
optimum effect and there was no need to use backup power plants
running on fossil fuels. The results from the pilot project represent
further progress towards digital integration of electric vehicles into
the power grid and pave the way for implementing this solution on a
larger scale.

Electric mobility: turning a problem for the energy revolution
into a solution.

As the number of electric vehicles on our roads continues to grow, so
does the amount of electric power needed to fuel individual mobility.
Considered in terms of total requirements, however, electric mobility
is a relatively small factor. Independent studies predict that in
Germany, for example, a fleet of two million electric vehicles would
only increase electricity demand by around one per cent.

At the same time, intelligent charge control means electric mobility
can help grid operators handle new challenges arising from the
increasing input of renewable energy. These centre on precisely
balancing supply and demand – i.e. power generation and consumption –
both geographically and in terms of quantity. Wind electricity
generated in the north of Germany, for instance, must be able to reach
consumers in the south. This is made more difficult when the grid is
already working at maximum capacity. Without intelligent charging,
this can lead to congestion that has to be cleared rapidly. So, if a
particular region is at risk of an electricity shortage, the usual
response is to increase output from coal- or gas-fired power plants
that can be brought on line at short notice.

Intelligent charging can help to keep the price of electricity
stable.

Known as “redispatching”, these interventions in the power generation
network generate costs in the region of €500 millions a year in
Germany alone – and these must be met by the power grid operators.
Intelligently controlled charging holds potential to cut these costs,
as briefly decreasing vehicle charging eliminates the grid congestion,
allowing wind power to flow smoothly and dispensing with the need to
use fossil energy in power plants.

As integrating electric vehicles into the power grid and implementing
intelligent charge control reduces redispatching costs, it can also
help to limit expansion of the cross-regional network of power lines –
and thereby restrict electricity price rises.

Contributions made to stabilisation of the power grid also provide
the basis for energy-linked business models, as owners of electrified
vehicles can actually earn money through intelligently controlled
charging. This represents a milestone on the road to realising the BMW
Group’s vision of offering electric vehicle drivers electricity for
charging their cars that is both free and generated with zero emissions.

An all-encompassing electric mobility offering.

The BMW Group has been running a precursor to the pilot project in
Germany for several years already. The ongoing BMW i Charge Forward
initiative in California has seen intelligent charging control –
according to the needs of both customers and the power grid –
undergoing practical trials under everyday conditions with a fleet of
over 300 electric vehicles. The local grid operator has backed the
scheme with financial rewards. And as the drivers of the electric
vehicles participating in the scheme ultimately pocket the bonuses,
this is a win-win situation for all involved.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Research & Development,Sustainability,Drive Technologies,Mobility of the future,i3,Environment,I01,Product,BMW

Spartanburg/ Munich. BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in
the US state of South Carolina has doubled its capacity for production
of high-voltage batteries. The plant’s own battery facility now
produces the new fourth-generation batteries. These are intended for
the plug-in hybrid models of the new BMW X5 and the future BMW X3,
also produced in Spartanburg.

“We have invested around ten million US
dollars in a new battery assembly line and expanded the area to more
than 8,000 square metres. This means we could double the number of
batteries produced if needed to meet market demand,” explains Michael
Nikolaides, Senior Vice President Engines and Electrified Drivetrains,
BMW Group.

The new assembly line will be able to produce different types of
fourth-generation batteries to serve the growing range of electrified
vehicles locally. These batteries are based on a new technology
concept that further enhances their performance.

More than 120 people will be employed in battery production at Plant
Spartanburg by the end of the year, having completed a comprehensive
training programme to acquire the technological know-how needed for
battery production.

“We have produced batteries on site at
Plant Spartanburg since 2015 – making the BMW Group a pioneer for
electromobility in the US,” says Knudt Flor, President and CEO, BMW
Manufacturing, Co., LLC. In the past four years, the plant’s battery
assembly team has produced a total of more than 45,000 batteries.

Further investment in production of BMW X5 and BMW X3 plug-in hybrids

Between 2015 and 2018, BMW Group Plant Spartanburg built the first
series produced plug-in hybrid vehicle, the BMW X5 xDrive40e (combined
fuel consumption: 3,3 l/100km; combined power consumption: 15,3
kWh/100km ; combined CO2-emission: 77 g/km), for the core BMW brand.
The start of production for the new BMW X5 xDrive45e (combined fuel
consumption: 2,0-1,7 l/100km*; combined power consumption: 23,5-20,3
kWh/100km*; combined CO2-emission: 47-39 g/km*) will be in August
2019; production of the BMW X3 xDrive30e (combined fuel consumption:
from 2,4 l/100 km*; combined power consumption: from 22,7 kWh/100 km*;
combined CO2-emission: from 56 g/km*; provisional figures) will get
underway in December.

“The BMW X5 and BMW X3 are currently among the top-selling BMW models
in the US. We expect their plug-in hybrid variants to be just as
popular with customers,” adds Flor.

Since the start of the year, the BMW Group has invested a further ten
million US dollars in production of plug-in hybrid models. An
additional 225 vehicle assembly workers received training in the
production of electrified vehicles, adding to the Plant’s already
skilled staff.

International production network for batteries

The BMW Group currently has three battery facilities: at the
Competence Centre for E-drive Production at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing
in Germany, at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the US and at Plant
Powertrain of its joint venture, BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA). The
BMW Group also produces batteries for local car production in
cooperation with a partner in Thailand. The BMW Group’s battery
research and pilot plant are located in Munich.

CO2 EMISSIONS & CONSUMPTION.

Munich. The BMW i3 sets standards worldwide for
driving pleasure in a purely electrically-driven vehicle. Key factors
here are not only the increased output of the motor in the new BMW
i3s, but also the innovative traction control system adapted
specifically to the instantaneous power deliver of the BMW eDrive
system. Presented for the first time in the new BMW i3s, the system
improves traction and driving stability in adverse weather and road
conditions when pulling away, in active Brake Energy Regeneration
phases and when accelerating out of tight corners. At the heart of
this innovation is the control system’s 50-times-faster routine, made
possible because – unlike conventional driving stability systems – the
control process is now calculated directly in the powertrain instead
of in a remote unit requiring long signal paths. This development
provides further evidence of BMW i as a pioneer of innovative
technology within the BMW Group.

"With their high levels of torque and instantaneous responses to
every movement of the accelerator, electric motors already make
significantly higher demands on driving stability systems than
conventional power units," explains Peter Langen, Head of Chassis
Development at BMW.

That’s why the BMW engineers developed a new type of system
geared squarely to the demands of electric mobility.
The
positive impact of these shorter control cycles is not reserved for
purely electrically driven cars; indeed, this innovative traction
control system also optimises traction, driving stability and driving
dynamics in vehicles with combustion engines. It will therefore be
fitted in BMW and MINI models with front-, rear- and all-wheel drive
to deliver noticeably greater assurance and driving pleasure when road
conditions make pulling away difficult.

boasts an excellent position in the all-wheel-drive market, a segment
it first entered 30 years ago. Around one in three BMW cars sold
around the world is now equipped with the intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel-drive system. BMW’s success in this segment has been driven
not only by the ever-popular BMW X models but also by all-wheel-drive
models based on the other model series, from the BMW 1 Series to the
BMW 7 Series. Across these model series, a large choice of AWD models
is offered in a wide range of engine versions. At the same time, BMW
continues to refine this technology and take it in new directions. By
offering BMW xDrive in combination with a hybrid drive and with a
front-wheel-drive platform, the company has repeatedly demonstrated
its proficiency in the all-wheel-drive field, proficiency that will
secure BMW’s position at the forefront of this sector well into the
future. Today, BMW offers more than 110 models – of either
transmission type – with BMW xDrive in 12 different model series, as
well as the plug-in hybrid BMW i8 sports car and the compact BMW 225xe
with electrified all-wheel drive.

The focus from day one: traction and dynamics.

BMW’s first foray into the all-wheel-drive market came
with the unveiling of the BMW 325i “Allrad” at the Frankfurt Motor
Show (IAA) in 1985. From the outside, the newcomer didn’t immediately
reveal its inner qualities, so its performance when the journalists
took it out on the test track was even more of an eye-opener. This
very first BMW all-wheel-drive system not only improved traction away
from surfaced roads and in adverse weather conditions, but also made
for more dynamic handling through corners. “The new BMW is the new
champion when it comes to handling,” was the verdict of the testers
from German car magazine Auto Zeitung not long after the first unveiling.

Today, the intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system takes
typical BMW driving dynamics to new levels. The current generation of
this system is controlled by the Integrated Chassis Management (ICM)
system, which ensures that xDrive always responds appropriately at the
earliest possible moment, based on reliable sensing and monitoring of
the current driving situation. The interventions may be performed
either entirely by BMW xDrive, or by xDrive in combination with
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) or Dynamic Performance Control (DPC).
The resulting fast and precise control of drive power distribution
ensures typical BMW handling characteristics even under extremely
dynamic cornering.

The all-wheel-drive system is biased towards the typical BMW
rear-wheel-drive characteristics. That is to say, on the
all-wheel-drive models a greater share of the drive power is sent to
the rear wheels, even under normal driving conditions. This maintains
the typical BMW precise steering response, with virtually no torque
steer. For crisp turn-in and high tracking stability, the
latest-generation BMW xDrive system starts increasing the amount of
power sent to the rear wheels as soon as the vehicle enters a corner,
further enhancing the driving pleasure for which BMW is a byword.

BMW all-wheel-drive technology: continuous evolution since 1985.
The full-time all-wheel-drive system featured on the BMW 325i
“Allrad” of 1985 split the drive power in a ratio of 37 to 63 per cent
between the front and rear wheels. In response to wheel speed
differences, visco locks in the transfer case and rear differential
were capable of providing a virtually rigid connection between the
front and rear wheels, in order to improve traction and stability.
This model’s name was soon changed to BMW 325iX, and from 1988 it was
offered in a “touring” version as well (lower-case spelling up to and
including the E46 series).

1991: BMW 525iX.
Three years on, BMW introduced an all-wheel-drive model in the
BMW 5 Series too. For the first time, the power split was now
electronically controlled. The newly developed system featured
multi-plate clutches that allowed the default 36:64 front-to-rear
power split to be varied seamlessly and automatically in line with
driving conditions. Initially a hydraulically controlled multi-plate
clutch was used at the rear axle, but this was later replaced by
electronically controlled selective braking intervention. The system
monitored the driving situation using wheel speed signals from the
Anti-lock Braking System, supplemented by further information about
brake status, engine speed and throttle valve position.

From the outset the all-wheel-drive system of the BMW 525iX was a
class apart. The electronic control system delivered a very fast and
precise response, resulting in safe, neutral handling characteristics
even in difficult driving conditions, such as on wet roads or snow. In
the BMW 5 Series, too, the first all-wheel-drive models were offered
in both Sedan and touring versions.

1999: The Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) opens a new chapter.
In the run-up to the new millennium, a highly innovative vehicle
concept from BMW made its sensational debut. The BMW X5, the first
Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), impressed customers with driving
dynamics that were unmatched among other all-terrain vehicles of the
time. The outstanding all-wheel-drive system played a big part in
this. A planetary gear system split the drive power in a ratio of
38:62 per cent between the front and rear wheels, while electronic
control systems such as DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), ADB-X
(Automatic Differential Brake) and HDC (Hill Descent Control) ensured
the new BMW X5 was both sporty on the road and equipped to handle
challenging conditions off the beaten track.

In the years following the successful launch of the SAV concept,
there was no let-up in the fast pace of all-wheel-drive development at
BMW. The next year, 2000, a model-specific version of the BMW X5’s
all-wheel drive technology became available for the fourth generation
of the BMW 3 Series.

2003: BMW xDrive makes its debut in the BMW X3 and BMW X5.
Four years on from the debut of the BMW X5 in 1999, BMW kept up
the momentum by launching the SAV concept in a further vehicle
segment. The new BMW X3 was more compact than the BMW X5 and offered
even more agile handling. It set new benchmarks and remained the only
premium model in its class for years to come.

The newly developed BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which was
introduced in the same year in both the BMW X3 and the BMW X5, soon
extended BMW’s lead in the AWD segment. Based on an extremely
fast-acting electronic multi-plate clutch in the transfer case, xDrive
worked in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control system (DSC) to
continuously adapt the drive power split to the current driving
situation. In addition to wheel speed, for the first time the
electronic control system also took into account Dynamic Stability
Control data, for example about steering angle, accelerator position
and lateral acceleration. This is what makes BMW xDrive the world’s
first, and still only, “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system. Unlike
conventional all-wheel-drive systems, which only react when at least
one wheel is already spinning, xDrive is able to detect a risk of
oversteer or understeer at the very first signs, and proactively
corrects this by redirecting the flow of drive power.

In the years that followed, the BMW xDrive intelligent
all-wheel-drive system was fitted not only on the X models but also on
the xDrive versions of the BMW 3 and 5 Series Sedan and Touring
models. By the time the second generation of the BMW X3 was introduced
in 2010, more than 600,000 units of this series had already been sold
worldwide. A little earlier, sales of the BMW X5 – which entered its
second generation in 2006 – had topped the one million mark.

2008: SAC with Dynamic Performance Control and hybrid
drive.
With the two Sports Activity Vehicles now firmly
established in their respective segments, in 2007 BMW went on to
present the world’s first Sports Activity Coupe. Unveiled at the
Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the brand-new BMW X6 elevated the typical
dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For
the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined
with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power
split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled
agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on
overrun. In 2009, the BMW Active Hybrid X6 demonstrated a further
perfect pairing – between BMW xDrive and hybrid propulsion. Meanwhile,
in the same year, BMW M GmbH added two very special models to its
range of high-performance sports cars. With an M-tuned BMW xDrive
system, including Dynamic Performance Control, the BMW X5 M and BMW X6
M boasted performance that was previously unknown in the
all-wheel-drive market.

2009 also saw the arrival of a new X model, the BMW X1. For many
years to come, the BMW X1 was destined to remain the only vehicle of
its kind in the premium compact segment. Its intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel-drive system, like that of the new BMW X3 (2010), was also
combinable with Performance Control. This system selectively brakes
the wheel on the inside of a turn while simultaneously increasing
engine power, resulting in quick and precise turn-in to corners and
taking the agile handling of both models to new levels.

BMW xDrive also available for other model series.
The steady advance of the BMW X models has been accompanied by
an increase in the number of xDrive versions offered in the other BMW
model series too. Designed to improve cornering agility and precision,
BMW xDrive provides an enhanced driving experience and an optimal
combination of dynamics and comfort. So it was only a matter of time
before this intelligent drive technology made its debut in the BMW 7
Series as well, in 2009. In spring 2012, the first all-wheel-drive
Coupe and Convertible models were then offered in the sporty BMW 6
Series. BMW xDrive can also be specified on the current BMW 3 and 5
Series and, since 2013, on the Convertible, Coupe and Gran Coupe
models of the new BMW 4 Series.

Driving progress ever forward.
BMW took things forward in the premium mid-sized segment with
the launch of the BMW X4 in 2014. The new Sports Activity Coupe offers
a unique blend of driving enjoyment, sophisticated style and
contemporary practicality. It comes with BMW xDrive as standard and is
available in a wide range of engine versions. In the same year, BMW
also presented the third generation of the BMW X5, the second
generation of the BMW X6, and M Sport versions of both models. BMW
xDrive also made its debut in the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. This
was a debut with a difference, being the first time BMW had combined
its intelligent all-wheel-drive system with an all-new
front-wheel-drive format.

With the BMW i8, unveiled in 2014, the BMW Group took a bold new step
in new directions – which also extended to the all-wheel-drive system.
This 2+2-seater sports model is powered by a highly advanced plug-in
hybrid drive system that pairs an internal combustion engine driving
the rear wheels with a high-performance electric motor driving the
front wheels.

Focused on the future: BMW xDrive meets BMW eDrive.
BMW’s latest all-wheel-drive models bring technology advances
that are firmly focused on the future of mobility. The BMW i8 was
followed by the international launch of the first production plug-in
hybrid model from the BMW core brand: the BMW X5 xDrive40e. Thanks to
full-time BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive and eDrive BMW EfficientDynamics
technology, this Sports Activity Vehicle mates thrilling and
effortless sporty performance with outstanding efficiency. Intelligent
hybrid power management synchronises the operation of the internal
combustion engine and the electric motor to maximise efficiency at all
times, while also responding perfectly to the driver’s demands. The
drive from the two power units is transferred to the road via the
full-time BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW 7 Series: Integral Active Steering combinable with BMW xDrive.
In September 2015, the sixth generation of the BMW 7 Series
makes its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA). This high-end
BMW luxury model pioneers groundbreaking innovations on all fronts,
and will be available with BMW xDrive from its market launch in
October. The new luxury sedan will also be the first model to allow
intelligent all-wheel-drive to be combined with Integral Active
Steering – that is to say with passively steering rear wheels.

dynamic character of the BMW X models to a new level of intensity. For
the first time, the intelligent all-wheel-drive system was combined
with Dynamic Performance Control (DPC), which varies the drive power
split between the rear wheels when cornering to ensure unrivalled
agility and stability, even under sudden throttle changes or on

Engines made by BMW and MINI win awards in four

out of eight capacity classes

Munich/Stuttgart. Success in four out of eight
capacity classes put the BMW Group in a dominating position at the
"International Engine of the Year Awards" this year. Among
the award-winning power units at the world's most renowned engine
competition were both petrol and diesel engines with four, six and
eight cylinders. The victorious quartet consisted of the V8 engine of
the BMW M3, the in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower
Turbo, direct injection and VALVETRONIC used in such vehicles as
the BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series, the 4-cylinder diesel
engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo from the BMW X1 xDrive 23d and the BMW
123d, and the 4-cylinder Twin Scroll turbo engine of the MINI Cooper S.

The wide range of winning engines is further evidence of the
outstanding expertise of the BMW Group in the area of engine
development. It enables engines of great power yet also exemplary
efficiency to be offered across all series and output classes. The
"Engine of the Year" awards were conferred by an
international jury made up of 76 engine journalists from 35 countries.
The award ceremony was held at the "Engine Expo" trade
fair in Stuttgart.

The "Engine of the Year" awards have been in existence
since 1999. Since then over 50 class and overall victories have fallen
to engines developed for automobiles of the brands BMW and MINI. Among
the serial production winners in this competition were the 1.6 litre
4-cylinder engine from the MINI Cooper S, achieving its fourth and
last victory this year. Next year it will be the turn of the recently
presented successor engine in the 1.4 - 1.8 litre capacity class. In
addition to the Twin Scroll technology and petrol direct injection of
its award-winning predecessor, this engine also has variable valve
control and an output of 135 kw/184 bhp, as well as being the world's
most efficient engine in its capacity class.

The first victory in the category of 1.8 - 2 litre engines went to
the most powerful 4-cylinder diesel engine in the BMW range. The 2.0
litre fully aluminium direct injection power unit with BMW TwinPower
Turbo and common rail direct injection has an output of 150 kW/204 bhp
and impressed jury members both with its pulling power and its
outstanding efficiency. The experts commented that in view of the
qualities of this engine, it appeared doubtful as to whether diesel
engines will get any better at all in future.

There was an internal BMW changeover in the class of 2.5 - 3 litre
engines.
The new winner in this category is the 3.0 litre
in-line 6-cylinder engine with an output of 225kW/306 bhp with BMW
TwinPower Turbo, petrol direct injection and VALVETRONIC. It thus
replaces the predecessor engine of identical output which secured the
overall "Engine of the Year" award in 2007 and 2008, as well
as finishing first in its capacity class last year. Yet further proof
of the dominance of BMW engines in this capacity class is provided by
a glance at the ranking table. Second to the new title winner and a
long way ahead of the competition is the new 3.0 litre in-line
6-cylinder diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo and common rail
direct injection.

The V8 engine of the BMW M3 won its third award in succession in the
capacity class between 3.0 and 4.0 litres. The 309kW/420 bhp 4.0 litre
engine used in the high-performance sports cars BMW M3 Coupé,
BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M3 Convertible fascinated the jury yet again with
its outstanding propulsive force resulting from the high-revving
concept which is characteristic of this power unit. In addition to
brilliant performance qualities, the experts also noted the impressive
efficiency of the high-performance engine, which in the BMW M3 is
combined with an Auto Start/Stop function, brake energy regeneration
and other BMW EfficientDynamics measures.

With seven awards for four engines, BMW once again
emerges as the most successful brand from the "International
Engine of the Year Awards 2007", the world's most important engine
competition. For the third time in a row, the Awards jury - consisting
of 62 high-ranking international automobile journalists from 30
countries - awarded the principal prize, the highly sought-after
"International Engine of the Year" to the Bavarian automobile
manufacturer. This year the trophy goes to the new BMW 3.0 litre Twin
Turbo petrol engine, now fitted in all body variations of the
successful BMW 3 Series. The world's first in-line 6-cylinder engine
with Twin Turbo technology also came out top in two other categories,
winning the "Best New Engine of the Year 2007" and the 2.5 -
3.0 litre capacity class. In addition to the engine's enormous pulling
power, the jury was particularly impressed by the high efficiency of
the 225 kW/306 bhp power unit. With 9.5 litres per 100 kilometres in
the BMW 335i Coupé, the average fuel consumption level based on
the EU norm is extremely moderate for this performance class. The Twin
Turbo achieves this mainly due to BMW High Precision Injection, the
first jet-guided direct injection system ever to be produced in
high-volume production. It enables a particularly precise metering of
the air-fuel mixture. Two awards were won by the V10 high-performance
engine, which is to be found under the bonnet of the BMW M5 and M6. The
507bhp power package with a capacity of 5 litres received the award
"Best Performance Engine of the Year" as in the last two
years, and also won in the engine class over 4.0 litres capacity. In
2005 and 2006 this exceptional engine won the "International Engine
of the Year" award itself. "The BMW V10 is still
unsurpassed", said jury member Jeroen Jongeneel of "De
Telegraaf". The 2.0 - 2.5 litre Award was won by the 2.5 litre
6-cylinder petrol engine with VALVETRONIC which is used in the BMW Z4
Roadster 2.5si and X3 2.5si. With its fully variable valve control -
used for the first time in 2001 and since established in millions of
vehicles - the engine delivers 160 kW/ 218 bhp and founds the BMW
philosophy of efficient dynamics. "You can hear the 2.5-litre
engine from a long way off due to its exquisite sound", says jury
member Rogelio Rivera-Nava from Mexico. "The in-line 6-cylinder
construction provides the basis for the technical purity of this most
famous of all BMW engines. It is pleasure to drive it." And this
was not the end of the prize series for BMW Group. In the 1.4-1.8 litre
category the trophy jointly went to BMW Group and PSA Peugeot
Citroën, the developing partners of the 1.6 litre turbo engine. It
powers the MINI Cooper S with sporty 128 kW/175 bhp, as well as models
of the developing partner in brand-specific adaption. The newly created
special features of this 4-cylinder engine include the innovative Twin
Scroll turbo technology with fuel direct injection. Over the last nine
years, BMW has won over 30 of the highly sought-after
"International Engine of the Year Award" trophies. This is
impressive evidence of the BMW's market leadership in the field of
engine construction.

Press Contact: Osama El-Sherif
Tel: +971-4-3129-964
E-mail: osama.el-sherif@bmwgroup.com

Press Release,Drive Technologies
