The new BMW M3 GTR as a highlight alongside Formula 1

Continuity and new beginning at the same time
Munich. Parallel to Formula 1 racing BMW will once again be participating in
the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) in 2001. The third season of the long
distance series is seeing something of a renaissance: BMW is now going for gold
with a racing version of the new M3 in the GT category.

The new BMW M3 GTR drives with the power of a V8 engine. Four of the coupés are
being built at BMW Motorsport in Munich. Two of these will start their racing
career under the well-established leadership of team manager Charly Lamm and
his team of specialists from BMW and from Schnitzer Motorsport.

In the races, usually lasting 2 hours 45 minutes and a maximum of 12 hours, two
drivers take turns at the wheel. One of the BMW duos is the established BMW
drivers JJ Lehto from Finland and the German Jörg Müller, the other consists of
the newcomers Fredrik Ekblom (S) and Dirk Müller (D).

The other two BMW M3 GTRs are being used by the American BMW Team PTG. BMW star
Hans-Joachim Stuck is one of the regular drivers.

BMW WilliamsF1 Team in its second year
After gaining third place in its debut season, BMW aims to defend this ranking
in the Formula 1 world championship constructors' category and also catch up on
the established leaders. To this end, a completely new BMW V10-cylinder has
been developed in Munich. Ralf Schumacher's new team colleague is Juan Pablo
Montoya.

Development of customer sport and promotion of young talent
The fastest BMW customer in 2001 can buy an improved kit for the successful BMW
320i DTC. Last year, private drivers won the titles in Germany and Holland with
the near-standard touring car. BMW responded to the new European Touring Car
Championship (ETCC) according to super production regulations by bringing out a
new customer vehicle based largely on the 320i DTC.

Participation in the young talent events BMW ADAC Formula Junior Cup and BMW
Formula ADAC Championship has also been extended. Now in its eleventh year,
this renowned talent school has once again undergone technical improvements and
steps towards internationalisation.
