Munich/Dubai. The vehicles in the BMW iX5 Hydrogen
pilot fleet, which launched in February this year, have completed an
intensive round of hot-weather testing in the United Arab Emirates for
the first time. The car’s fuel cell drive system performed
impressively in the face of temperatures rising to 45°C, as well as
sand and dust, varying gradients and significant fluctuations in humidity.

The highly efficient fuel cell system, the two hydrogen tanks,
the electric motor and the power battery teamed up with the central
vehicle control unit to demonstrate their outstanding performance and
state of readiness. The Munich-based development team examined both
the functionality of all the electric systems under the extreme
conditions and the provision of the cooling power to enable the full
performance of the vehicle. The vehicles were able to ensure the
driving dynamics for which BMW is renowned.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen goes around the
world
Vehicles from the pilot fleet are currently in
action in Europe, Japan, Korea, China, the USA and the Middle East.
The aim is to shine a spotlight on the everyday usability of
hydrogen-powered vehicles, and beyond that to gain important knowledge
for the development of a potential series-produced model. The BMW
Group is using the pilot fleet to provide support on a regional level
for the development of a refuelling infrastructure which can be used
with 700-bar refuelling technology across all categories of vehicle –
from passenger cars and small vans to buses and heavy-duty commercial
vehicles. Synergies between different areas of application also offer
important scope for developing a strong network of suppliers in
hydrogen technology and reducing costs.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen combines long-distance capability and short
refuelling stops with locally emission-free driving. Provided the
relevant framework is in place, the hydrogen fuel cell technology has
the potential to serve as another pillar in the BMW Group’s future
drive system portfolio.

As part of its ongoing transformation, the BMW Group is applying
a “technology-open” approach when it comes to drive systems. The
company is therefore adapting to different customer requirements,
infrastructure standards and political and regulatory landscapes in
the various regions of the world. This flexibility puts the BMW Group
in the position to respond quickly to changing requirements in the
markets in any situation and to present an attractive offer for as
many customers as possible at all times.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen has a fuel cell system generating output of
125 kW/170 hp and a highly integrated drive unit using
fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology (the electric motor,
transmission and power electronics are grouped together in a compact
housing). The output of the overall drive system is 295 kW / 401 hp.
The hydrogen needed to power the fuel cell is stored in a pair of
700-bar tanks made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP).
Together, these tanks can hold around six kilograms of hydrogen. This
storage capacity gives the BMW iX5 Hydrogen a range of 504 km (313
miles) in the WLTP cycle.

Press Contact: PressClub Media Support
Tel: 089 382 0
E-mail: media.pressclub@bmw.de

Press Release,Research & Development,Sustainability,G05,Mobility of the future,Drive Technologies,Production,iX5 Hydrogen

<pp:caseid>780541</pp:caseid><pp:summary>Fresh updates enhance visual authority and presence.</pp:summary>

Singapore.
BMW Group Asia announced the availability
of the new BMW X5 and BMW X6, the extensively updated editions of its
successful Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupé
(SAC) respectively for the luxury segment.

The new BMW X5 and BMW X6 emphasise their inherent poise and
assurance with detailed design revisions and additions to their
standard specification. Also leading the way are the new systems for
driving assistance, automated parking and the fully digital iDrive
control/operation system with BMW Curved Display based on BMW
Operating System 8.

The update provides the new BMW X5 with everything it needs to
maintain worldwide market leadership in its segment and enable the new
BMW X6 to secure its position as number one ahead of competitors from
other premium German manufacturers. The two models are built at BMW
Group Plant Spartanburg in the USA, the competence centre for BMW X models.

The new BMW X5: slim headlights.

The M Sport design elements as standard give the new BMW X5
significantly greater presence and visual robustness. Its front end is
shaped by the fresh interpretation of the hallmark BMW headlights and
kidney grille. The new headlight units now have a 35-millimetre
slimmer outline. Their arrow-shaped daytime driving light elements
point outwards and also serve as turn signal indicators. Matrix LED
headlights with adaptive control and BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling
high beam come as standard.

The precisely updated design of the new BMW X5 also spans newly
designed air breathers in the front side panels, vertical air curtains
and lower air intake, complete with decorative trim detail in Black High-gloss.

The sculptural fibre-optic light guide elements for the rear lights
and brake lights now have particularly striking contouring. The L
shape familiar from other BMW models is reflected horizontally,
creating a consistently illuminated X motif within the rear lights.

The new BMW X6: Pitch-perfect athleticism.

The new BMW X6 also has slim headlight units with arrow-shaped
daytime driving light elements. The dynamic character of the new BMW
X6 is highlighted even more intently with the standard M Sport
package. Playing a key role here is the octagonal frontend signature
below the BMW kidney grille, with its striking side apertures and
generous use of black surfaces. In addition, the three-dimensional
sculpting of the front apron underscores the car’s width and brawny stature.

M-specific side skirts and M High-gloss Shadowline trim are also part
of the M Sport package. The rear apron of the SAC has an insert in
Dark Shadow, while the new exhaust tailpipe trims are trapezoidal in shape.

Modern cockpit design with all-digital BMW Curved Display.

Digital technology is the guiding force behind the advances brought
to the interior of the new BMW X5 and BMW X6. The integration of BMW
Operating System 8 and the latest generation of the iDrive
control/operation system also heralds the arrival of the BMW Curved
Display in the Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupé. It
is made up of a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering
wheel and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches –
both located behind a single glass surface. The touch control
functionality of the control display has brought about a significant
reduction in the number of buttons and switches in favour of digital
control for numerous functions. The innovative cockpit and associated
updates to the instrument panel bring a particularly progressive feel
to the modern premium ambience.

Standard specification for both models includes sports seats, an
instrument panel with surfacing in leather-like Sensafin and a curving
trim element in fine wood (BMW X5) or carbon fibre (BMW X6). Another
new feature is the ambient light bar with highly effective LED
backlighting integrated below the trim element in the front passenger
area. The relevant model lettering – “X5” or “X6” – is added to the
light bar’s graphic. The control panel on the centre console includes
additional touch-sensitive surfaces and a newly designed gear selector
lever. The newly designed Travel & Comfort System also comes as standard.

New engine, new eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and
systematic electrification.

The new BMW X5 and BMW X6 come as standard with a six-cylinder
in-line petrol engine from the latest generation of power units. The
engine now links up with the likewise new eight-speed Steptronic Sport
transmission, complete with gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.
It sends its power to the road – or indeed unpaved surfaces, as the
need arises – via the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

The drive unit now features 48V mild hybrid technology. This
application of electrification comes in the form of an electric motor
integrated into the transmission. This motor generates an output boost
of up to 9 kW/12 hp and 200 Nm of torque, helping the combustion
engine to deliver a smooth, dynamic drive along with high efficiency.

Latest-generation six-cylinder in-line petrol engine.

Innovations affecting the combustion process, gas exchange, valve
control, injection and ignition system mark out the latest-generation
3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line petrol engine at work in the new BMW X5
xDrive40i and BMW X6 xDrive40i.

The new engine develops maximum output increased by 47 hp over the
outgoing model to 381 hp, plus peak torque up by 70 Nm to 520 Nm. This
can be boosted to as much as 540 Nm with the input of the mild hybrid
system. The engine accelerates the new BMW X5 xDrive40i and BMW X6
xDrive40i from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds.

Sophisticated chassis technology underpins sporting ability
and long-distance comfort.

The integrated braking system is a key element of the advanced
chassis technology at work here. Standard specification also includes
21-inch M Y-spoke wheels for the new BMW X5 and 22-inch M V-spoke
wheels for the new BMW X6.

Additional systems for assisted driving and automated parking.

Comfort and safety in the new BMW X5 and BMW X6 can be taken to
another new level with a significantly expanded selection of assisted
driving and automated parking systems. Updates include enhanced
capabilities for the standard front-collision warning system, which
can now also reduce the risk of a collision with cyclists, pedestrians
or oncoming traffic when turning off a road. The standard Driving
Assistant also offers Speed Limit Display with no-overtaking
indicator, Lane Change Warning, Rear Crossing Traffic Warning and Rear
Collision Prevention.

As well as the Reversing Assist Camera and Reversing Assistant, the
standard Parking Assistant Professional enables automated parking into
and out of spaces and complete manoeuvres over a distance of up to 200
metres to be controlled from outside the car using the My BMW App on
an Apple iPhone.

Latest-generation BMW iDrive, new digital services.

The latest-generation BMW iDrive tech based on BMW Operating System 8
brings both the BMW Curved Display and an array of new digital
services to the new BMW X5 and BMW X6. The BMW Live Cockpit
Professional includes the cloud-based navigation system.

The BMW Digital Key Plus enables customers to lock and unlock their
new BMW X5 or BMW X6 via security-enhanced ultra-wideband (UWB) radio
technology with compatible smartphones running the iOS or Android
operating system. Optimised smartphone integration and the
personalised BMW ID are also on hand.

The new BMW X5 and BMW X6 are now available for viewing at all
authorised BMW dealers in Singapore.

April 2023.

The new BMW X5: slim headlights, illuminated BMW kidney grille.

The inclusion of the xLine design elements as standard gives the
BMW X5 significantly greater presence and visual robustness. Its
front end is shaped by the fresh interpretation of the hallmark BMW

Selective Beam non-dazzling high beam, plus M Shadowline lights, are
included on the options list.

The BMW kidney Iconic Glow is now offered as an option for the
six-cylinder variants of the new BMW X5, and its cascade lighting
creates an extremely eye-catching and brand-typical look. The
vertical air curtains and the lower air intake, complete with
decorative trim detail in Pearl-effect Chrome and triangular
apertures in its outer areas, also contribute to the cutting-edge aura.

The precisely updated design of the BMW X5 also spans newly
designed air breathers in the front side panels and the standard
inclusion of Exterior Line Satin Aluminium trim and roof rails in
Satin Aluminium. The sculptural fibre-optic light guide elements for
the rear lights and brake lights now have particularly striking
contouring. The L shape familiar from other BMW models is reflected
horizontally, creating a consistently illuminated X motif within the
rear lights.

The new BMW X6: M Sport package now standard.

The new BMW X6 also has slim headlight units with arrow-shaped
daytime driving light elements. As before, the BMW kidney Iconic
Glow is offered as an option for the six-cylinder models. The
dynamic character of the new BMW X6 is highlighted even more
intently with the now standard M Sport package. Playing a key role
here is the octagonal front-end signature below the BMW kidney
grille, with its striking side apertures and generous use of black
surfaces. In addition, the three-dimensional sculpting of the front
apron underscores the car’s width and brawny stature.

M-specific side skirts and M High-gloss Shadowline trim are also
part of the M Sport package. The rear apron of the SAC has an insert
in Dark Shadow, while the new exhaust tailpipe trims are trapezoidal
in shape.

Range-topping models with distinctive design features; M
Sport package Pro makes its debut.

The M Sport package is available as an option for the new BMW X5 to
convey the feeling of exclusive dynamism, as it does as standard in
the design of the new BMW X6. These design features take on a
model-specific form for the range-topping BMW X5 M60i xDrive (fuel
consumption, combined: 12.5 – 11.5 l/100 km [22.6 – 24.6 mpg imp];
CO2 emissions: 283 – 261 g/km in the WLTP cycle) and
BMW X6 M60i xDrive (fuel consumption, combined: 12.3 – 11.4 l/
100 km [23.0 – 24.8 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions:
279 – 258 g/km in the WLTP cycle). They include double bars and an
M logo for the BMW kidney grille, M exterior mirror caps in Black
high-gloss, exhaust system tailpipe trim in the hallmark M quad-pipe
style and a rear spoiler in Black high-gloss for the BMW X6 M60i xDrive.

All model variants are now available with the M Sport package Pro.
The new M Marina Bay Blue metallic (BMW X5 M60i xDrive) and M Isle
of Man Green metallic (BMW X6 M60i xDrive) body paint finishes are
available exclusively for the range-topping models. New additions
for all models are Blue Ridge Mountain metallic, Brooklyn Grey
metallic, Skyscraper Grey metallic, Frozen Pure Grey metallic and
around 40 BMW Individual special paint finishes.

Modern cockpit design with all-digital BMW Curved Display.

Digital technology is the guiding force behind the advances brought
to the interior of the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6. The integration of
BMW Operating System 8 and the latest generation of the iDrive
control/operation system also heralds the arrival of the BMW Curved
Display in the Sports Activity Vehicle and Sports Activity Coupé. It
is made up of a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering
wheel and a control display with a screen diagonal of 14.9 inches –
both located behind a single glass surface. The touch control
functionality of the control display has brought about a significant
reduction in the number of buttons and switches in favour of digital
control for numerous functions. The innovative cockpit and
associated updates to the instrument panel bring a particularly
progressive feel to the modern premium ambience.

Standard specification for both models now includes an instrument
panel with surfacing in leather-like Sensafin and an elegantly
curving trim element in fine wood. Another new feature is the
ambient light bar with highly effective LED backlighting integrated
below the trim element in the front passenger area. The relevant
model lettering – “X5” or “X6” – is added to the light bar’s
graphic; in the two flagship models it displays the M logo. The
control panel on the centre console includes additional
touch-sensitive surfaces and a newly designed gear selector lever.

Comfort seats for the driver and front passenger can be specified
as an alternative to the standard sport seats with Sensafin
surfaces. Also available as an option are BMW Individual Merino
extended leather upholstery, BMW Individual full Merino leather
upholstery, active seat ventilation and a massage function.

Among the other highlights of the options list are the new Comfort
Package with panel heating and a “thermo” function for the cup
holders, the Sky Lounge panoramic glass sunroof illuminated by LED
units, glass applications for selected controls, the Bowers &
Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System and the newly designed Travel
& Comfort System.

New engines, new eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission
and systematic electrification.

The new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 can both be ordered with the choice
of an eight-cylinder petrol engine, a six-cylinder in-line petrol
and a six-cylinder in-line diesel engine – each from the latest
generation of power units. All of the engines now link up with the
likewise new eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, complete
with gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. They send their power
to the road – or indeed unpaved surfaces, as the need arises – via
the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

All the drive units now feature 48V mild hybrid technology. This
across-the-board application of electrification comes in the form of
an electric motor integrated into the transmission. This motor
generates an output boost of up to 9 kW/12 hp and 200 Nm (147 lb-ft)
of torque, helping the combustion engine to deliver a smooth,
dynamic drive along with high efficiency.

New plug-in hybrid BMW X5 xDrive50e offers more power,
efficiency and electric range.

The drive system for the plug-in hybrid variant of the SAV has also
been completely reworked, and the updated model carries the
designation BMW X5 xDrive50e. A latest-generation six-cylinder
in-line petrol engine and a similarly new electric motor team up to
develop system output of 360 kW/490 hp (including temporary boost
effect) – an increase of 70 kW/96 hp over the outgoing model – and
combined torque of 700 Nm (516 lb-ft), which is a rise of 100 Nm
(74 lb-ft). The petrol engine’s nominal output of 230 kW/313 hp
represents an increase of 20 kW/27 hp on the unit it replaces. The
compact electric motor integrated into the eight-speed Steptronic
Sport transmission produces a nominal output of 145 kW/197 hp
(+62 kW/84 hp). In addition, an innovative pre-gearing stage – used
to increase the effective torque produced by the electric motor to a
maximum 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) at the transmission input for the motor –
helps to provide even sharper power delivery. The BMW X5 xDrive50e
accelerates from rest to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds.

The amount of usable energy that can be stored by the high-voltage
battery integrated into the underbody area has been increased by
almost 25 per cent over the preceding generation, to 25.7 kWh. A new
Combined Charging Unit doubles the maximum AC charging rate to
7.4 kW. The electric range of the new BMW X5 xDrive50e is 94 –
110 kilometres (58 – 68 miles) in the WLTP cycle.

New V8 petrol engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology.

Credit for the elite sporting prowess of the two range-topping
models goes to a new 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine, derived from the
power units in high-performance models from BMW M GmbH. M TwinPower
Turbo technology and a cross-bank exhaust manifold imbue the
390 kW/530 hp engine, which generates peak torque of 750 Nm (553
lb-ft), with impressively accomplished performance characteristics.

The latest version of the eight-cylinder engine powers both the new
BMW X5 M60i xDrive and new BMW X6 M60i xDrive from 0 to 100 km/h (62
mph) in 4.3 seconds.

Latest-generation six-cylinder in-line petrol engine.

Innovations affecting the combustion process, gas exchange, valve
control, injection and ignition system mark out the
latest-generation
3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line petrol engine
at work in the new BMW X5 xDrive40i (fuel consumption, combined:
9.9 – 8.5 l/100 km [28.5 – 33.2 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions:
224 – 193 g/km in the WLTP cycle) and new BMW X6 xDrive40i (fuel
consumption, combined:
9.6 – 8.5 l/100 km [29.4 – 33.2 mpg
imp]; CO2 emissions:
218 – 192 g/km in the WLTP cycle).

The new engine develops maximum output increased by 35 kW/47 hp
over the outgoing models to 280 kW/380 hp, plus peak torque up by
70 Nm (52 lb-ft) to 520 Nm (383 lb-ft). This can be boosted to as
much as 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) with the input of the mild hybrid system.
The engine accelerates both the new BMW X5 xDrive40i and new
BMW X6 xDrive40i from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.4 seconds.

Six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with detail improvements.

The six-cylinder in-line diesel engine in the new BMW X5 xDrive30d
(fuel consumption, combined: 8.2 – 7.1 l/100 km [34.5 – 39.8 mpg
imp]; CO2 emissions: 215 – 186 g/km in the WLTP cycle)
and new BMW X6 xDrive30d (fuel consumption, combined: 7.9 – 7.0
l/100 km [35.8 – 40.4 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions:
208 – 184 g/km in the WLTP cycle) also brings upgrades to numerous
details. The 3.0-litre unit now has steel pistons instead of
aluminium items, an optimised oil separation process and a new
common-rail direct injection system with solenoid valve injectors.

The new diesel engine joins forces with the mild hybrid system to
produce maximum output of 219 kW/298 hp and peak torque of 670 Nm
(494 lb-ft). This enables both the new BMW X5 xDrive30d and new
BMW X6 xDrive30d to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.1 seconds.

Sophisticated chassis technology underpins sporting ability
and long-distance comfort.

Fitting adaptive suspension as standard, modifying the anti-roll
bars in response to changes in weight distribution and strengthening
them accordingly gives the new BMW X5 and new BMW X6 their signature
blend of sporting versatility and excellent long-distance comfort.
Adaptive M suspension, which comes as standard on both the
range-topping models as well as the other variants of the new
BMW X6, provides a particularly firm connection to the body.
Adaptive two-axle air suspension and the xOffroad package are
offered as options. The range-topping models are equipped as
standard with Integral Active Steering. This is available as an
option for all other models or as part of the adaptive M suspension
Professional, which also includes an M Sport differential and an
active roll stabilisation system.

The integrated braking system is another element of the advanced
chassis technology at work here. And standard specification also
includes 19-inch light-alloy wheels for the new BMW X5, 20-inch
items for the new BMW X6 and 21-inch wheels for the range-topping
variant of each model. Light-alloy wheels up to 22 inches in size
can be specified as an option.

Singapore. BMW M GmbH is unveiling the third
generation of its high-performance executive-class Sports Activity
Vehicle (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) models. BMW Asia and
Performance Munich Autos today announced the launch of the first-ever
BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition – these two models
deliver handling agility, dynamism, and precision unmatched in their
class. Their superior performance attributes combine with the
versatility, extrovert design, and modern luxury of which BMW X models
are renowned.

A V8 engine developing 625 hp, an M-specific chassis that has been
tailored to both the engine’s performance profile and the SAV / SAC
vehicle concept, as well as design features taken from the M playbook
ensure imposing power and supremely controllable handling, even at the
dynamic limits. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is dispatched in a mere
3.8 seconds for both models – the first-ever BMW X5 M Competition
clocks the 0 to 200 km/h sprint in 13.4 seconds, and the first-ever
BMW X6 M Competition stops the clock at 13.2 seconds for the same
sprint. Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 250
km/h. The intoxicating all-round performance package benefits from
fine-tuning carried out during intensive testing at the BMW Group’s
proving grounds, the Nürburgring-Nordschleife and other race tracks.

Significant power hike: high-revving V8 engine with M
TwinPower Turbo technology developing 625 hp.

M TwinPower Turbo technology and the appetite for revs shared by all
M models give the latest-generation V8 engine fitted in the first-ever
BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition an unmistakable
performance profile. Its headline character traits are instant
response to the slightest movement of the accelerator, precisely
controllable power delivery, and a linear wave of power into the upper
echelons of the rev range under full throttle.

The 4.4-litre engine teams up with two turbochargers – positioned in
the “V” between the cylinder banks – whose impact is further enhanced
by a cross-bank exhaust manifold. Torque peaks at 750 Nm between 1,800
and 5,800 rpm, while the maximum output of 625 hp arrives at 3,000
rpm. The power unit’s firm connection to the vehicle’s structure
results in remarkably instantaneous engine response and direct
transmission of its power to the drivetrain. A super-stiff engine
mounting results also makes the car sharper on turn-in while dampening
the transmission of engine noise to the cabin. The M Sport exhaust
system captures all of the engine’s free-revving eagerness and
propulsive power to thrilling effect, generating a soundtrack of
particular emotional richness.

Precise power transfer: eight-speed M Steptronic transmission
with Drivelogic, M xDrive and Active M Differential.

The high-performance engine in the two Competition models teams up
with the latest version of the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission
with Drivelogic, whose gearshift characteristics can be adjusted using
the Drivelogic button on the M-specific selector lever. The driver may
also opt to use the M shift paddles on the steering wheel for manual
control over the gear selection process.

The M xDrive all-wheel-drive system with bespoke tuning and the
Active M Differential at the rear axle have been specially tuned to
transfer drive to the road with characteristic élan. The two systems
thus optimise traction, agility, and handling stability when the cars’
sporting capabilities are put to the test in all terrains. In the
default 4WD setting, the M xDrive displays a conspicuous rear-wheel
bias – it only brings the front axle into play when the rear wheels
aren’t able to transmit any more power to the road, and additional
tractive force is required. However, the driver can also dip into the
Setup menu to select 4WD Sport mode to bring extra intensity to the
driving experience, in which an even greater proportion of the
engine’s torque is directed to the rear wheels.

M-specific chassis, integrated braking system.

Pulse-quickening on-road dynamism and unsurpassed ground-covering
ability over off-road terrain set the tone for the new
high-performance additions to the SAV and SAC segments. The first-ever
BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition are fitted with
extensive measures to optimise the stiffness of the body structure and
suspension mountings. The model-specific design and tuning of the
chassis technology also helps enhance handling precision. Standard
specification includes the adaptive M suspension system with
electronically controlled dampers, the active roll stabilisation
system, and M Servotronic steering. The stiff suspension mountings on
both models enable damper control to be extremely precise. The
electric swivel motors on the active roll stabilization system have a
high adjustment torque, enabling extremely direct damper response when
absorbing bumps on the road surface or taming body roll.

M compound brakes offer outstanding stopping power combined with
supreme feel and excellent comfort. The version of the integrated
braking system developed for BMW M models presents the driver with two
settings for brake pedal feel – COMFORT mode allows for
comfort-oriented feedback, while SPORT mode makes for an extremely
direct, instantaneous response.

Extrovert design, variable-use interior, luxurious ambience.

The shared racing focus of the first-ever BMW X5 M Competition and
BMW X6 M Competition models is emphasised by their striking exterior
designs. The combination of typical SAV / SAC proportions with
signature M design features lends the first-ever BMW X5 M Competition
and BMW X6 M Competition an extrovert appearance exuding supreme
authority in any environment.

Large air intakes, M gills on the front side panels, aerodynamically
optimised exterior mirrors, a roof / rear spoiler, a rear apron with
diffuser elements and the two pairs of exhaust tailpipes lay the
technical platform required to deliver standout performance. The
Competition models come with distinctive design highlights, among them
the BMW Laserlights feature, as well as exclusive M light-alloy wheels
in 21-inch format at the front axle and 22-inch at the rear
(first-ever BMW X5 M Competition: Star-spoke style 809 M Bicolour,
first-ever BMW X6 M Competition: Star-spoke style 818 M Bicolour). The
different rim diameters also combine with mixed tyres to optimise
transmission of lateral control forces through dynamically taken corners.

Inside the high-performance models, abundant space, top-class
materials, and build quality radiating precise craftsmanship create a
luxurious ambience. The classy, contemporary style of the cabin is
complemented by displays and controls with the familiar M treatment –
the bespoke M controls, and the red splashes of colour adorning the M
leather steering wheel’s M buttons plus the Start/Stop button on the
centre console help the driver to dial fully into the dynamic driving
experience. The restyled selector is trimmed in leather with an
embossed M logo and stitching in M GmbH colours, and includes the
Drivelogic switch. It also incorporates an eye-catching cut-out
accentuated by the integral ambient lighting.

Both models feature a fine-grain Merino full leather trim with
M-specific hexagonal quilting – this is also used for the door trim
panels, the lower section of the instrument panel, the front seat
backs, the door panelling, and the door pockets in leather too. A BMW
Individual headliner in Alcantara anthracite is also available as
standard. The luxurious interior ambience is further continued with
features such as the soft-close function, as well as a Harmon Kardon
sound system fitted as standard on the Competition models.

Operating system creates intense M feeling; exclusive standard
equipment.

A Setup button on the centre console enables direct access to the
settings for the engine, dampers, steering, M xDrive and braking
system. Two individually composed variants of this M setup can be
stored and called up at any time by pressing one of the two red M
buttons on the steering wheel. Added to which, the information shown
in the instrument cluster and Head-Up Display and the functionality of
the driver assistance systems can both be varied using the M Mode
button on the centre console.

In addition to ROAD and SPORT settings, the first-ever BMW X5 M
Competition and BMW X6 M Competition feature a TRACK setting designed
exclusively for use on race circuits. Switching to SPORT or TRACK mode
reduces the amount of information appearing in the displays. In
addition, the safety-enhancing interventions initiated by the driver
assistance systems – such as active braking or steering inputs – are
reduced to a bare minimum or deactivated altogether. The exclusive
selection of equipment fitted as standard includes the BMW Head-Up
Display with M-specific readouts, M multifunction seats for the driver
and front passenger, and the BMW Display Key. Both models also come
with the BMW Live Cockpit Professional with navigation system and the
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant as standard.

The Driving Assistant Professional package provides the best in
comfort and safety with features such as the Steering and lane control
assistant, the Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision
protection, the Lane Change Assistant, the Evasion Assistant, the
Emergency Stop Assistant and the Crossroads warning, Wrong-way warning
and Front Cross Traffic Alert systems. The standard-fit Parking
Assistant Plus comes to the driver’s aid when selecting and
manoeuvring into parking spaces – in addition, the system includes
Active Park Distance Control and camera system allowing for the Top
View, Panorama View, 3D Top View and Remote 3D View functions. The
Reversing Assistant also forms part of standard equipment.

The first-ever BMW X5 M Competition and BMW X6 M Competition are now
available for viewing at the Performance Munich Autos showroom.

Singapore. BMW Asia and Performance Munich Autos
today announced the availability of the new BMW X5 M50i. The flagship
of the BMW X5 range exudes a supreme presence with concentrated power
generated by the new 8-cylinder petrol engine. The engine is based on
BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and produces a maximum output of 530
hp. More than ever before, this new top-flight engine underlines the
sporty nature of the latest generation of the original Sports Activity
Vehicle (SAV) – and the first BMW X model in the luxury segment. The
new BMW X5 M50i combines the V8 engine with the intelligent BMW xDrive
all-wheel drive system and a model-specific suspension technology,
developed with expertise from BMW M GmbH.

New V8 engine with outstanding power and characteristic sound.

The 4.4 litre drive unit of the new BMW X5 M50i emphasises the
characteristic features of the 8-cylinder engines in terms of power
development and torque to an outstanding degree. The new V8 engine
turns in a very impressive level of performance – whether you prefer
cruising calmly and confidently at low engine speeds, or pulling out
all the performance stops and laying down some sporty acceleration
manoeuvres. Several components have been upgraded since the previous
engine version; these include the crankcase, cylinder barrels,
pistons, crankshaft and cylinder head – and above all, the freshly
updated BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The turbochargers positioned
between the cylinder banks in the V compartment have been enlarged,
while the direct petrol injection performs at a new maximum pressure
level of 350 bar. The technology package also includes the newest
versions of the fully variable VALVETRONIC valve control and variable
double VANOS camshaft control.

The new V8 engine responds with great sensitivity to every movement
of the accelerator pedal. The engine already generates its maximum
torque of 750 Nm at 1,800 rpm – and it remains available up to an
engine speed of 4,600 rpm. Accordingly, the power output is as
strident as you would expect it to be. The maximum value of 530 hp is
activated between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm. As a result, the new BMW X5
M50i is able to complete the sprint from zero to 100 km/h in only 4.3 seconds.

This supreme power development is accompanied by an impressive sound
progression that is generated by the standard M sport exhaust system.
Using the driving experience control, the driver can choose between an
extremely sporty or a more comfort-oriented mode. The sheer bandwidth
of the engine’s character then becomes all the more obvious. In the
SPORT and SPORT PLUS modes, not only is the characteristic curve of
the accelerator pedal configured for a dynamic driving style, but the
power development and remarkable sound characteristics of the V8
engine are too.

8-speed Steptronic sports transmission, BMW xDrive and M
sports differential for thrilling performance.

The performance features of the thoroughly sports-oriented BMW X5
M50i are supported by the rather specific nature of the power
transmission. The new V8 engine is combined as standard with an
8-speed Steptronic sports transmission, characterised by highly
dynamic gear shift properties. Shift paddles are mounted near the
steering wheel for manual control of the choice of gear, while the
Launch Control function enables traction-optimised acceleration with
maximum dynamic performance from standing.

The latest version of the BMW xDrive system distributes the engine
torque between the front and rear wheels in a manner that enables it
to adapt quickly and precisely to the road conditions. The intelligent
all-wheel drive system increases the agility and supreme traction of
the new BMW X5 M50i as much as it enhances the driving stability in
all weather and road conditions. These sporty characteristics are also
supported in highly dynamic driving situations by the rear-wheel
emphasis of the system’s design. In addition, the standard equipment
of the new BMW X5 M50i also includes an M sports differential. The
electronically controlled differential lock in the rear bevel gears
limits the rotational speed balancing between the wheel on the
innermost side of a bend and that on the outermost side and enables
highly dynamic acceleration when exiting a bend. Finally, the M sports
differential is interconnected with the DSC (Dynamic Stability
Control), thereby optimising traction and power transmission when
driving on loose terrain and when different road friction values exist
between the right and left rear wheels. This serves to prevent wheel
spinning arising due to insufficient grip, with the torque being
redirected to the other wheel.

Model-specific suspension technology for a superior drive.

The model-specific suspension of the new BMW X5 M50i has been
painstakingly tuned to extract maximum potential from the outstanding
drive design based on the know-how of BMW M GmbH. This employs a
construction principle comprising a double-wishbone front axle and a
five-link rear axle combined with specific kinematics and
elastokinematics for the wheel suspension, independent suspension and
damping settings, and 22-inch M light alloy wheels in Double-spoke
style 742 M complete with mixed tyres. The standard equipment also
includes electromechanical steering with Servotronic function and an M
sport brake system with blue-coated brake calipers complete with the M logo.

The new BMW X5 M50i is equipped with the Adaptive M Suspension
Professional package as standard. One of two sets of characteristics
can be selected for the electronically controlled dampers, which can
be activated using the driving experience switches, comprising COMFORT
and SPORT modes. In the SPORT driving mode, as well as at speeds of
over 138 km/h, this automatically results in a reduced ride height of
20 millimetres. However, the driver is also able to adjust the height
of the body by activating a button in the cockpit; two levels are
available, raising the height up to 40 millimetres above the standard setting.

Integral active steering is available for the new BMW X5 M50i, which
serves to further enhance the vehicle’s agility. It also results in
enhanced superiority when it comes to lane changing and
manoeuvrability in urban traffic, by co-steering the rear wheels
either in the same or in the opposite direction, depending on the
driving speed. A further increase in superiority and dynamics of the
drive characteristics is produced by the integral active steering, the
active electronic anti roll stabilizers, which ensures very fast and
precise balancing of lateral roll forces during dynamic cornering, by
means of electric swivel motors fitted to the front and rear axles.

Driving Assistant Professional: the complete package for
comfortable and safe driving.

The standard Driving Assistant Professional package comprises of the
Steering and lane control assistant as well as the Lane Keeping
Assistant with active side collision protection. The Lane Change
Assistant can be used on motorways and dual carriageways when the
Steering and lane control assistant is active. Holding the direction
indicator in the required direction is all it takes to initiate a lane
change. If the sensors detect that there is space in the adjacent lane
and that no other vehicle is approaching at high speed, the driver
benefits from helpful steering assistance during the lane change.
Another component of the system is the evasion aid, which can help
avoid collisions with vehicles or pedestrians suddenly appearing in
the driver’s path. As soon as an evasive manoeuvre corresponding to
such a scenario is detected, the system assists the driver with
steering inputs to direct the vehicle into a clear adjacent lane.

The array of assistance systems contained in this wide-ranging suite
of safety and comfort features also comprises of Crossing traffic
warning, which reduces the risk of a collision when manoeuvring
forwards or in reverse towards crossing traffic where visibility is
restricted. Rear Collision warning, Priority warning, Wrong-way
warning and Lane Change Warning are also part of the Driving Assistant
Professional package. The latest version of Lane Departure Warning now
includes active steering inputs to bring the vehicle back to the
intended lane.

Design and equipment: exclusive appearance with a luxurious atmosphere.

Model-specific designer features serve to emphasise the exclusive and
sporty nature of the new BMW X5 M50i the moment you see it. The
extra-large air inlets in the front apron are a clear indication of
the V8 engine’s cooling requirements. The unique design of the side
sills and rear apron, the BMW individual high-gloss Shadow Line, and
selected design elements in Cerium Grey similarly serve to underline
the outstanding status of the 8-cylinder models.

The SAV’s interior features an M leather upholstery with contrast
stitching and perforated surfaces and interior strips in Aluminium
Tetragon, ensuring a luxurious feel with a sporty touch. And as if
that wasn’t enough, the standard equipment also comprises illuminated
entry sills displaying the ’M50i’ logo, a headliner in Anthracite and
a Harmon Kardon surround sound system.

The new BMW X5 M50i is now available for viewing at the Performance
Munich Autos showroom.

Singapore. BMW Asia and Performance Motors today
launched the all-new BMW X5, a car with eye-catching off-road
attributes and assured performance on rough ground combined with the
premium characteristics and signature dynamics of a BMW: this was the
blueprint with which BMW launched the all-new Sports Activity Vehicle
(SAV) category almost 20 years ago. The first example of the breed was
the BMW X5, making it the founding father of the BMW X model family
and the market leader in the premium all-wheel drive segment – a
status it maintains to this day.

More than 2.2 million examples of the BMW X5 have been sold across
its three model generations. And the new car puts down another marker
in terms of design and technology. The all-new BMW X5 will again be
built at BMW Plant Spartanburg in the US state of South Carolina. This
centre of expertise for BMW X models also handles production of the
BMW X3, BMW X4, BMW X6 – and will soon add the BMW X7 to its roster as well.

New design language exudes robust assurance and authority.

A wheelbase 42 mm longer than its predecessor’s (now
2,975 millimetres), a 36 mm increase in vehicle length (to
4,922 millimetres), an extra 66 mm of width (now 2,004 millimetres)
and a 19 mm increase in height (to 1,745 millimetres) give the all-new
BMW X5 both an imposing appearance and generous levels of space for
passengers and their luggage. The latest X5 retains the hallmark
proportions of an SAV, but the pared-back design language – clean
surfacing and precise lines accentuating the car’s robustness, elegant
poise and muscular authority – is new. A powerfully sculpted bonnet, a
short front overhang, lightly hexagonal wheel arches and the dynamic
sweep of the roofline provide further references to the sporty yet
rugged character of the all-new X5.

The most striking feature of the front end is the large BMW kidney
grille with single-piece surround. The all-new BMW X5 comes as
standard with LED headlights, while BMW Laserlight can be specified as
an option. This optional system employs a BMW Laserlight spotlight
with Selective Beam to optimise the high beam function, and as a
result the range of the non-dazzling high beam has been increased to
around 500 metres. Blue x-shaped elements, which split up the
hexagonal light sources inside the familiar BMW twin headlights, make
a distinctive visual statement.

The precise character line in the car’s flanks, which rises up at the
rear door, contributes to the modern appearance of the all-new BMW X5.
It defines the car’s powerful shoulders and feeds into the rear
lights, which extend well into the flanks. At the rear, too, all the
lights feature LED technology. The three-dimensional design of their
glass covers lends them a sculpted, technical edge. Diagonal accent
lines give the rear a compact and brawny appearance.

xLine model variant, options from BMW Individual.

Distinctive design features mark out the xLine model variant of the
all-new BMW X5. The xLine model uses exterior cues including kidney
grill bars in aluminium matt, an underguard, roof rails and side
window surrounds in Aluminium satinated, plus other accents in
Pearl-effect Chrome, to accentuate the off-road character of the
all-new BMW X5. The car comes as standard with 20-inch light-alloy
wheels in V-spoke style. The M Sport model variant will be optionally
available and displayed at the Singapore Motorshow 2019.

The all-new BMW X5 will also be available from launch with
model-specific options from BMW Individual. Indeed, customers looking
to bring extra exclusivity to the exterior design of their car can
specify the BMW Individual paint finish Sunstone metallic, extended
BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line, tinted headlights and rear
lights, painted BMW Individual brake callipers and 22-inch BMW
Individual light-alloy wheels.

Interior and equipment

Modern, clearly structured and elegant surfacing radiates a generous
feeling of space inside the all-new BMW X5. Indeed, the front and rear
occupants all enjoy ample accommodation amid an exclusive ambience.
The instrument panel is broken up by sweeping horizontal lines, which
combine with classy electroplated trim elements to emphasize the width
of the interior. And with its large trim finisher and surrounds
likewise made up of electroplated elements, the centre console –
rising up to the instrument panel – also contributes to the handsome
overall impression.

The raised seating position, driver-focused cockpit and new design
and arrangement of the controls offer the person at the wheel the best
possible view of proceedings and enable him or her to maintain supreme
control over the task of driving. The fully-digital instrument cluster
and the Control Display are connected visually by consistency of
design and also share the same graphics. The centre console hosts the
Controller, the newly designed transmission selector lever and all
other driving-related controls – i.e. the Driving Experience Control
switch, the start/stop button and the buttons to activate the air
suspension settings and off-road modes (if specified). A similarly
new-look control panel for the heating and air conditioning is also on
hand, and the light functions in the all-new BMW X5 are likewise
operated using buttons.

The carefully selected materials in the interior include the new
Vernasca variant for the standard leather upholstery. Like the
optional BMW Individual extended Merino leather trim, it is available
in five colours. The all-new BMW X5 is fitted as standard with
electrically adjustable sports seats. Customers can also specify
optional multifunction seats with massage function and seat
ventilation for the driver and front passenger.

xLine model with distinctive interior design.

The xLine model also comes with specific design features that bring a
distinctive flair to the interior. The interior appointments for the
xLine model accentuate the car’s robust versatility and luxurious
ambience. These include contrast stitching for the seat surfaces and
illuminated door sill plates.

Innovations conceived to promote well-being and enhance luxury.

Other new features designed to maximise the feel-good factor and
luxurious ambience on board the all-new BMW X5 include the standard
four-zone air conditioning system and the optional panoramic glass
roof, whose clear surface is 30 per cent larger than on the outgoing
car. The optional Panorama glass roof Sky Lounge, meanwhile, generates
a very special and exclusive aura when darkness falls, with LED light
spreading evenly across the glass surface to illuminate more than
15,000 graphic patterns and generate a display reminiscent of a
starlit sky. The colour scheme of this atmospheric light show can be
adapted as desired. The standard ambient lighting includes the Welcome
Light Carpet – which illuminates the entry area to the car when the
doors are unlocked or opened – and Dynamic Interior Light, which emits
pulsating light signals in pre-defined situations: they are activated
in the lining of a door or doors opened while the engine is running
and in the instrument panel when a phone call is incoming.

The optional Ambient Air package enables air ionisation and infuses
the interior with eight individually selectable scents. A luxurious
audio experience is laid on by the Harman Kardon surround sound system
that comes with a digital amplifier with individually adjustable
equalising, 464 W amplifier power, 9 channels and speaker bezels with
Harman Kardon designation. The optional Rear-seat entertainment
Professional system comprises of a pair of 10.2-inch full-HD
touchscreen displays, a Blu-ray-compatible DVD player, two USB ports,
an HDMI socket and two headphone jacks. The system is part of the new
display and control concept and allows those in the rear of the
vehicle to select and operate entertainment functions. The rear-seat
passengers can use both their own media sources and those available in
the front compartment. A navigation map and BMW ConnectedDrive
services can also be accessed in the rear seats.

The all-new BMW X5 can now also be specified with thermo-cupholders
foremost in the centre console; the containers here can be kept cool
or warm, as required. Elsewhere, the optional glass applications for
selected controls bring an all-new flourish to the interior of the
all-new BMW X5. This exclusive design feature has been developed for
the transmission selector lever, the Controller, the start/stop button
and the volume control button for the audio system.

Versatile functionality: two-section tailgate, third row of seats.

As well as increased levels of comfort and exclusivity, the all-new
BMW X5 now also offers enhanced functionality. Folding down the
40 : 20 : 40 split rear seat backrest increases boot capacity from 645
litres to a maximum 1,860 litres. The all-new BMW X5 also has a
two-section tailgate for ease of loading. With the standard Comfort
Access feature, both sections can be opened and closed automatically
and hands-free. Added to which, the boot cover now lowers electrically
into the load compartment floor.

With the third row of seats (expected availability: Q2 2019),
customers may also order the rear seats with electric fore-and-aft
adjustment. A control panel in the boot can be used to slide the
second-row seats forwards or backwards and fold down the backrests of
the second and third rows. Plus, the second-row seats can be tilted
forward electrically to ease progress into and out of the two
third-row seats.

Powertrain and driving experience

The all-new BMW X5 is being launched with a one petrol representative
from the latest generation of engines. A six-cylinder in-line unit is
found under the bonnet of the all-new BMW X5 xDrive40i. The engine
channels its power through an eight-speed Steptronic transmission,
while BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive is on hand to ensure that
power is translated into secure progression – on or off road.

The BMW TwinPower Turbo technology package for the petrol engine
comprises of a turbocharger, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC
fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing.

Straight-six petrol engine with an inimitable thirst for revs.

The power unit fitted in the all-new BMW X5 xDrive40i boasts the
free-revving ability inherent in all six-cylinder in-line engines from
BMW, plus wonderfully eager response. The 3.0-litre unit employs a
twin-scroll turbocharger and direct petrol injection technology whose
maximum pressure of 350 bar ensures the fuel is delivered in extremely
precise doses. The straight-six generates its maximum output of 340 hp
between 5,500 and 6,500 rpm, while the peak torque of 450 Nm is
waiting to be unleashed from 1,500 – 5,200 rpm. The all-new
BMW X5 xDrive40i completes the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in just 5.5 seconds.

Eight-speed Steptronic transmission with sportier shift characteristics.

The engine of the all-new BMW X5 links up with a new, improved
version of the eight-speed Steptronic transmission, whose wider ratio
spread and new control electronics help to increase the powertrain’s
overall efficiency. New torsion dampers reduce rotational
irregularities and converter slip for superior shift comfort. And
optimised hydraulic control enables even sportier gear shifts.

Optimum power distribution courtesy of efficiency-enhanced
xDrive all-wheel drive and an electronically controlled rear
differential lock.

The task of maximising traction, agility and directional stability in
the all-new BMW X5 falls to the latest generation of the BMW xDrive
intelligent all-wheel-drive system, which is able to split drive
torque between the front and rear wheels with even greater precision
and speed, as the situation demands. For added efficiency, full power
can be directed to the rear wheels only in situations where all-wheel
drive is surplus to requirements. The new xDrive system also offers a
rear-biased set-up for those occasions when the driver adopts a
particularly dynamic style at the wheel.

New chassis systems enhance off-road ability, sportiness and comfort.

The design principle underpinning the chassis – based on a
double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle – also ticks all
the right boxes for supreme traction on rough terrain, coupled with
excellent dynamic responses and ride comfort in road driving. The SAV
now comes as standard with the Dynamic Damper Control system, whose
electronically controlled dampers sharpen the car’s handling dynamics
at the same time as increasing ride and suspension comfort. The driver
can select from two performance maps – for a more comfort-oriented or
sportier driving style – using the Driving Experience Control switch.

An array of chassis systems available in a BMW X model for the first
time make it possible to boost the off-road performance, sportiness or
comfort of the all-new BMW X5 more intensely and effectively than ever
before. The optional Integral Active Steering endows the car with
exceptionally agile and dynamic driving qualities.

Integral Active Steering (likewise available as an individual option)
is also operated electromechanically. By turning the rear wheels in
either the same direction as the front wheels or the opposite
direction – depending on the vehicle speed – it optimises cornering
agility, ensures effortless lane changes and helps the vehicle to dart
through city traffic. Integral Active Steering therefore makes light
work of manoeuvring into and out of tight parking spots, while also
increasing stability when overtaking at motorway speeds.

The two-axle air suspension system with automatic self-levelling will
be welcomed by anyone seeking greater ride comfort. The suspension’s
air supply is controlled individually for each wheel using an
electrically driven compressor with pressure reservoir, enabling it to
balance out an unevenly loaded vehicle. Since the air suspension works
in tandem with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, the vehicle
load registered by its sensors can be factored into braking calculations.

When the SPORT driving mode is engaged or the vehicle’s speed exceeds
138 km/h, its ride height is automatically lowered by 20 millimetres.
The driver can also adjust the body’s ground clearance – for off-road
driving, for example – by pushing a button in the cockpit. It can be
raised in two stages to a maximum of 40 millimetres above the standard
setting. Another button in the luggage compartment activates a loading
mode that lowers the vehicle by 40 millimetres. The next time the
engine is started, the system will automatically revert to the last
mode selected. The desired vehicle ride height can even be set with
the engine switched off. The optional BMW Display Key can also be used
to access this function.

Customers can also specify an Off-Road package, which is being
offered here in a BMW X model for the first time. The package’s
specification includes rugged underguard elements at the front and
rear of the vehicle, along with the two-axle air suspension and
electronically controlled rear differential lock. The Off-Road package
also features its own special graphics in the instrument cluster and
Control Display, and an extra button on the centre console for
selecting the four driving modes. The driver can therefore activate
the ideal settings for the vehicle’s ride height, the xDrive system,
the accelerator response, the transmission control, and the DSC
system’s corrective inputs in preparation for driving on a range of
surfaces, such as sand, rock, gravel or snow.

Driver assistance systems

Offering a significantly expanded array of driver assistance systems
compared with its immediate predecessor, the all-new BMW X5 clearly
demonstrates its commitment to taking comfort and safety to new
heights. By processing camera images and data acquired by radar
sensors, the new systems enable even more comprehensive support for
the driver in a variety of situations. As components of the BMW
Personal CoPilot, they represent new milestones on the road to
automated driving.

The standard equipment of the all-new BMW X5 includes Cruise Control
with braking function and the Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning
with City Braking function, which now also alerts the driver when
cyclists are detected. The optional Active Cruise Control (ACC) with
Stop & Go function is capable of braking the vehicle to a
standstill and sending it on its way again automatically. For greater
convenience in stop-start traffic, the period between stopping and
automatically moving off has been extended to up to 30 seconds. And
speed restrictions identified by the Speed Limit Info system with No
Passing Info display can be incorporated into the automatic cruise
control system with variations of up to 15 km/h.

Comprehensive safety and comfort package: Driving Assistant Professional.

Available as an option, the Driving Assistant Professional package
comprises of the Steering and lane control assistant as well as the
Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection. The Lane
Change Assistant can be used on motorways and dual carriageways when
the Steering and lane control assistant is active. Holding the
direction indicator in the required direction is all it takes to
initiate a lane change. If the sensors detect that there is space in
the adjacent lane and that no other vehicle is approaching at high
speed, the driver benefits from helpful steering assistance during the
lane change. Another component of the system is the evasion aid, which
can help avoid collisions with vehicles or pedestrians suddenly
appearing in the driver’s path. As soon as an evasive manoeuvre
corresponding to such a scenario is detected, the system assists the
driver with steering inputs to direct the vehicle into a clear
adjacent lane.

The array of assistance systems contained in this wide-ranging suite
of safety and comfort features also comprises of Crossing traffic
warning, which reduces the risk of a collision when manoeuvring
forwards or in reverse towards crossing traffic where visibility is
restricted. Rear Collision warning, Priority warning, Wrong-way
warning and Lane Change Warning are also part of the optional Driving
Assistant Professional package. The latest version of Lane Departure
Warning now includes active steering inputs to bring the vehicle back
to the intended lane.

For comfortable manoeuvring into and out of parking spaces:
Parking Assistant Plus.

The functionality of many other assistance systems that make life
easier for the driver when manoeuvring into and out of parking spaces
has been expanded once again. The all-new BMW X5 is equipped as
standard with Park Distance Control (PDC), which brings sensors at the
front and rear of the vehicle.

The Parking Assistant Plus in the all-new BMW X5 enables automatic
selection and use of parallel parking spaces. These parking spaces are
detected by ultrasonic sensors as the vehicle passes them. The Parking
Assistant Plus function is activated at the touch of a button on the
centre console. The system then takes care of the acceleration,
braking, steering and gear changes necessary to manoeuvre into the space.

Unique, high-precision guidance: the Reversing Assistant.

A further illustration of BMW’s ongoing progress towards automated
driving is provided by the Reversing Assistant. This function offers a
level of assistance – for leaving a parking space or manoeuvring in a
confined area – as yet unmatched by other vehicles. The Reversing
Assistant takes over steering to manoeuvre the vehicle along a path
recently negotiated forwards. This system makes reversing for a
distance of up to 50 metres a particularly comfortable task in the new
BMW X5. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brakes
and monitor the surrounding area. The system is initiated by pressing
a button when the vehicle is stationary and the gear selector is in
the “P” position. The steering movements made during the vehicle’s
last forward manoeuvre are stored by the system and retained, even for
longer periods. This means the Reversing Assistant can be used to
manoeuvre the new BMW X5 backwards out of a parking position that it
drove into forwards the preceding day.

The driver enjoys ideal all-round visibility, thanks to both the
rear-view camera and the Top View, Panorama View and 3D View functions
of Parking Assistant Plus, which create a 360-degree image of the
vehicle and its surroundings in the Control Display. In addition,
drivers can use the Remote 3D View feature to access a
three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and surroundings on a smartphone.

Display and control system, BMW Connected and ConnectedDrive.

The BMW Live Cockpit Professional in the all-new BMW X5 combines a
new display and control concept and the ultimate in connectivity to
create a superb all-round package. The latest-generation display and
control concept comprises of a high-resolution instrument cluster
behind the steering wheel with a 12.3-inch screen and a Control
Display also measuring 12.3 inches across.

The most recent incarnation of the display and control concept, which
runs the latest BMW Operating System 7.0, has a cutting-edge, fully
digital design and is geared even more closely to the driver’s
personal needs in order to optimise attention control. With its clear
presentation and structuring, plus customisable and personalised
displays, it sets out to provide drivers with the right information at
the right time.

The redesigned graphics display in the instrument cluster now leaves
enough room for a part-view of the navigation map. The main menu in
the Control Display is now spread over up to ten pages, each showing
two to four tiles with live content. The intuitive multimodal
interaction between driver and vehicle has also been further improved
and allows him or her to choose between touch control using the
Control Display, the familiar iDrive Touch Controller, the controls on
the steering wheel, voice control, or BMW gesture control, depending
on the situation at hand.

Other elements of the BMW Live Cockpit Professional are an adaptive
navigation system, a hard-drive-based multimedia system with 20 GB of
memory and two USB ports, plus Bluetooth and WiFi interfaces. The
driver can be automatically detected and personal settings activated
either using the vehicle key or BMW Digital Key, or by selecting a
user in the Control Display and entering the correct PIN.

Drivers can enjoy the full benefits of the car’s intelligent
connectivity capabilities by using its built-in SIM card and unlimited
data allowance. Not only does this provide access to vehicle apps such
as news, weather, office and online search, it also allows customers
to use Intelligent Emergency Call – which automatically summons swift
assistance in an emergency – and to receive regular updates for the
navigation system’s maps.

For the first time, a selection of digital services will also be
bundled together and offered for the all-new BMW X5 under the guise of
the Connected Package Professional. This will make it easier for
customers to select extremely attractive digital services for their
car, either when ordering their all-new BMW X5 or at a later date. The
Connected Package Professional includes Remote Services, Concierge
Services and Real Time Traffic Information. Customers can continue to
download the various digital services individually and retrospectively
via the ConnectedDrive Store.

BMW Connected: digital services for individual mobility.

BMW Connected is the digital and personal mobility assistant for
BMW drivers. Intelligent connectivity helps users to reach their
destination easily and with minimal stress – and not only when in
their car; BMW Connected is an all-embracing concept designed to
seamlessly connect the driver and their smartphone with their vehicle.

At the heart of it all is the Open Mobility Cloud, which allows the
personal mobility assistant to interface the car with the customer’s
digital devices. For instance, the BMW Connected app can import
appointments and addresses from the customer’s calendar entries
straight into the navigation system to begin route guidance. The
system also calculates the optimum departure time based on real-time
traffic information and notifies the driver with a message on their
smartphone. As the vehicle is also linked up via the Open Mobility
Cloud, it is able to access the calculated route directly when the
navigation system starts up. In addition, BMW Connected automatically
stores places the driver has visited regularly as well as personal
mobility patterns.

Premiere in the all-new BMW X5: the BMW Digital Key (Expected
availability: Q2 2019).

The Digital Key employs Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to
allow the vehicle to be locked and unlocked from a smartphone,
removing the need for a conventional car key. All the driver has to do
to open the vehicle is hold their smartphone up to the door handle.
Once inside, the engine can be started as soon as the phone has been
placed in the Wireless Charging or smartphone tray.

Accessible via the BMW Connected app, the Digital Key offers
unrivalled flexibility, as the driver can share it with up to five
other people. The BMW Digital Key will initially be available for
selected NFC-capable smartphones at launch.

Always up to date thanks to Remote Software Upgrade.

The Remote Software Upgrade feature keeps the vehicle up to date with
the latest software. All updates can be loaded over the air, as has
been customary for smartphones for some time. The upgrades can be
loaded onto a smartphone via the BMW Connected app when connected to a
domestic WiFi network. This saves customers the trouble of visiting
their BMW Service Partner for updates. The Remote Software Upgrade
facility therefore maximises flexibility while keeping BMW vehicles in
tune with the latest technological developments.
