BMW Group overall winner at the Engine of the Year Awards
    2015.

As well as being declared overall winner, the BMW Group picked
up three class wins in the world’s leading engine competition.

Munich / Stuttgart. Four wins in the latest International Engine of
the Year Awards plainly demonstrate the BMW Group’s engine-building
prowess. The drive unit in the BMW i8 earned two class wins as well as
being declared overall winner, with a further class win being garnered
by the engine of the BMW M3 and BMW M4.

The BMW i8 unit was voted class winner for its BMW TwinPower Turbo
three-cylinder petrol engine, while the overall drive unit of the BMW
i8 claimed a further class win as the best “new engine”. Its
combination of electric motor and petrol engine also earned it overall
victory. In the 2.5 to 3.0-litre displacement category, the M
TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line petrol engine of the BMW M3 and
BMW M4 came out on top.

This fourfold success for the BMW Group at the International Engine
of the Year Awards 2015 furnishes further evidence of the performance
potential of the Efficient Dynamics technology package, which since
2007 has enabled a continuous enhancement of driving pleasure while at
the same time cutting fuel consumption and emissions.

The International Engine of the Year Awards were launched in 1999,
since when 66 class and overall wins have gone to engines developed
for BMW models. Each year an expert panel of judges, this time
comprising 65 motoring journalists from 31 countries, selects the best
engines in numerous categories. The prize-winners were presented with
their awards on Wednesday, 17 June 2015, against the backdrop of the
Engine Expo trade fair in Stuttgart.

The three-cylinder combustion engine in the BMW i8 develops 170
kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels, while the 96 kW/131 hp electric
motor draws its energy from a lithium-ion battery, which can be
charged from a conventional domestic power socket, and sends its power
to the front axle. This bespoke plug-in hybrid system, developed and
produced by the BMW Group, enables a range of up to 37 kilometres (23
miles) in the EU test cycle and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph) on
electric power alone, coupled with a “glued-to-the-road” all-wheel
driving experience headlined by powerful acceleration and a
dynamically-biased distribution of power through keenly taken corners.
The more powerful of the two sources drives the rear wheels and uses
the electric boost from the hybrid system to deliver hallmark BMW
driving pleasure while at the same time offering ground breaking
levels of efficiency. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes
just 4.4 seconds, yet combined fuel consumption – as calculated in the
EU test cycle for plug-in hybrid vehicles – stands at 2.1 litres per
100 kilometres (approx. 135 mpg imp) plus 11.9 kWh of electricity.
This equates to CO2 emissions of 49 grams per kilometre.

The M Twin PowerTurbo six-in-line petrol engine in the BMW M3 and BMW
M4 is exceptionally high-revving for a turbocharged engine, resulting
in linear power delivery over a wide engine speed range and a unique
engine note. M TwinPower Turbo technology ensures that peak torque is
on tap over a broad rpm range.A further hallmark of this engine is its
  outstanding efficiency.

Further information on official fuel consumption figures, specific
CO2 emission values and the electric power consumption of new
passenger cars is included in the following guideline: “Leitfaden über
Kraftstoffverbrauch, die CO2-Emissionen und den Stromverbrauch neuer
Personenkraftwagen” (Guideline for fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and
electric power consumption of new passenger cars), which can be
obtained from all dealerships, from the Deutsche Automobil Treuhand
  GmbH (DAT), Hellmuth-Hirth-Str. 1, 73760 Ostfildern-Scharnhausen and

This year's prestigious red dot award for "Design Team
of the Year" has been awarded to the BMW Group for excellence in
product design. The BMW Group was honoured by an international jury for
outstanding contribution to the design industry at the gala awards
ceremony on 26 June at the Essen Opera House, the Aalto Theatre (named
after Finnish designer and architect, Alvar Aalto). Two automobiles,
the BMW 3 Series Coupe and the new Mini Cooper S, along with the BMW
F800S, BMW G650 Xcountry and the BMW HP2 Megamoto motorcycles, also won
red dot awards for product design for the BMW Group. At the same time,
the BMW Group subsidiary, BMW DesignworksUSA won awards for their
designs of the BMW Cruise Bike Junior, the design of a recycling
station for beverage holders, and the fully automatic coffee percolator
Talea Touch, making it a total of eight red dot awards for the BMW
Group. Awards acknowledge BMW design leadership The red dot
"Design Team of the Year" award is one of the most respected
and internationally acclaimed awards in the industry, and this year saw
more than 2,548 entries from 43 countries. "Both the number of
products submitted and the quality standards were excellent this
year," said Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder of the red dot Awards
and President of the international design association, Icsid. The
awards cross various categories including architecture, automobiles,
transport, industrial, leisure, lifestyle, office, computer and
entertainment electronics. The "Design Team of the Year" is
awarded based on three main areas including setting new benchmarks in
both presentation and selection; managing excellence in the fields of
education and training in design and adoption and commercialisation -
where concepts are adopted into the marketplace. Previous winners of
the award include Nokia, Apple, Pinnafarina and LG. The BMW Group
design team is led by chief designer, Christopher E. Bangle. The
combination of the BMW Group's philosophy and Bangle's personal belief
in creative diversity has allowed the Group to constantly push the
envelope in design and innovation, and establish their leadership
within the design community. Bangle balances these ideals by allowing
his team the greatest possible freedom in their search for inspiration
and influence, drawing it back to a philosophy of an aspiration for
authenticity. Thus design not only expresses the character of the
brand, but also the quality offered in a new product. BMW
DesignworksUSA an integral part of Group's design strength The BMW
Group's design leadership is further enhanced with its integral
subsidiary, DesignworksUSA, which has proven to be a vital and worthy
partner to the BMW Group. Beyond designing vehicles, equipment and
accessories for the BMW Group, the design team are committed to a
distinctive collection of international companies in the fields of IT,
entertainment electronics, boat building, aircraft technology,
household, lifestyle and sports. BMW Group DesignworksUSA won a
second red dot award for the design of a recycling station for beverage
holders, on top of winning two red dot awards to add to the Group' s
total win of seven awards, Headquartered in California, the design
consultancy established its Asian studio in Singapore in early 2006 to
meet the growing demand for design services in the region. The Asian
arm of the studio has become the creative node for International design
teams who are interested in serving the region. The creative space,
design resources and cultural insights of the Singapore studio has made
it a hotbed for creative ideas to flourish, with the cross-pollination
of cultural insights between the East and the West, resulting in a
unique design service for the Asian market. "Singapore has
proven to be an ideal regional platform to expand design work in Asia.
With a cosmopolitan society, high value and expectations on quality, and
a dynamic view on future business developments, Singapore is in the
midst of forming of a very strong creative hub. This along with high
Intellectual Property standards, excellent infrastructure and strong
government encouragement have contributed to this sturdy
formation," said Niko von Saurma, BMW Group DesignworksUSA
Singapore studio director.

Press Contact: Cindy Chia
Tel: +65-6838-9629
E-mail: cindy.chia@bmwasia.com

Press Release,Awards

A huge success both in the USA and worldwide, the
MINI Cooper is the winner of the Transportation category. And,
acknowledging an achievement really unusual for a car manufacturer, the
jury are also presenting their highest award to the BMW Group for a
unique work of art in the Environments category: For the first time,
the BMW Group is receiving this honour for a general design statement,
the Art of Car Design installation, a non-mobile structure created by
BMW Group designers especially for the Munich Pinakothek der Moderne
(Modern Art Museum) opening on 16 September 2003. The BMW F 650 CS
motorcycle as well as the MINI trolley bag in the MINI Lifestyle
collection received the IDEA Award in Bronze. The Industrial Design
Excellence Award (IDEA) is presented once a year by IDSA, the largest
US designer society, together with BusinessWeek, and is one of the most
renowned design prizes the world over. In their judgment based on
aesthetic value, innovation, practical benefits, economic use and
ecological responsibility, the 15-member jury made up of outstanding
designers, scientists and managers applies the highest standards. The
IDEA Awards will be presented in New York on 16 August 2003. BMW Group
designers in Munich and with DesignworksUSA, the BMW Group's design
studio in California, are just as proud of the award they have received
for their work of art in creating the Art of Car Design as they are of
the Gold Award for the MINI Cooper. This work of art certainly quite
unique in its overall dimensions was created for the Vehicle Design
Department of the Pinakothek der Moderne opened last autumn in Munich
and accommodated in the Neue Sammlung, the world's largest Museum for
Design and Applied Art, the world's largest collection of design and
applied art. In all, the wall-mounted installation is 14 metres wide
and 10 metres high, and is made of 25 tonnes of Carrara statuario
marble in a relief structure covering a free-form surface of 120 square
metres with specially arranged vehicle components in the background.
The installation expresses the particular tension of automotive design
within which the rational world of technology, human emotions, and the
search for the perfect form interact with one another. "With this
work of art we seek to dedicate a public statement to everybody
passionately supporting the art of automotive design and motivate them
to keep up this commitment", states BMW's Chief Designer Chris
Bangle. Fragments of forms in automotive design have been transformed
into stone on the heaviest part of the installation, the marble relief.
And unlike all the other exhibits at the Museum, touching and feeling
the emotions on display here is not just allowed, but even desired,
since this is the only way to really experience design in its genuine
form. A film installation going together with the wall installation
serves furthermore to provide a dynamic insight into the world of
automotive design: In a composition produced for six monitors,
communication designers at the BMW Group's DesignworksUSA Studio have
created a multimedia work of art presenting the elaborate process from
the very first drawing all the way to the finished model of the vehicle
to be produced. The design process presented in this way is accompanied
by Philip Glass's minimal music.

Press Contact: Cindy Chia
Tel: +65-6838-9629
E-mail: cindy.chia@bmwasia.com

Press Release,Awards

Once
again, the outstanding role played by the BMW Group in product and
vehicle design has been rewarded with a plethora of prizes. The Munich
automobile manufacturer was awarded another gold medal for outstanding
design by the renowned ranking list "Ranking:Design". Here
the design.net AG evaluates a total of 19 national and regional design
competitions every year and compiles a hit list of the 100 best
according to the number of the prizes and rankings achieved. In the
current 2002/2003 evaluation, BMW takes top ranking in the category
"Transportation and Special-Purpose Vehicles" as well as under
the heading "Leisure, Sports and Play" - and in the first
discipline it even had a considerable point lead over the next-ranked
competitor. And in the "Hall of Fame" which
"Ranking:Design" published for the first time, summing up all
the awards given since 1997, BMW topped both categories with a
considerable margin. BMW's unique leadership position in
"Ranking:Design" is equivalent to a knighthood: in the field
the hit list is regarded as the most important independent gauge of
internationally acclaimed design prowess. This spectacular ranking is
only one of a whole series of honours BMW has recently chalked up.
Since the start of the year more than a dozen prestigious prizes have
been conferred upon BMW's creative team. Hanover's iF International
Forum Design GmbH bestowed the renowned iF design award 2003 upon six
BMW products: in the category "Transportation Design" the new
Z4 roadster, the 7 Series, the MINI Cooper S and the BMW motorcycles R
1200 CL and F 650 CS were singled out for honours. In addition, the BMW
men's wristwatch won the coveted trophy in the "Product
Design" discipline. For many decades the iF design award,
presented in March, has been regarded as one of the world's major
design competitions. This year the jury of international top designers
awarded 423 prizes in a total of six disciplines. The Munich
automobile manufacturer also achieved top rankings from the famed
"red dot" design award, presented annually by the North
Rhine-Westphalia design centre. Of a total of nine products which BMW
submitted to this year's competition, eight were given the famous dot.
Two of them, the MINI Trolley Bag and the MINI City Bag, even collected
the especially coveted award "red dot: best of the best" for
top design quality. Both products were developed as part of the MINI
Collection in the Munich studio of the BMW subsidiary DesignworksUSA.
Once again, the "red dot" for top design quality was awarded
to the BMW Z4, which stands out for its striking lines, and the
imposing Two-Wheel Cruiser R 1200 CL, as well as the lifestyle products
BMW Slidecarver, MINI Skater, MINI sunglasses and the MINI wristwatch.
With a good 1500 submissions from 28 countries, the "red dot design
award" is also one of the world's largest design competitions. The
red dot, awarded on June 30 in Essen's Aalto Theater, is regarded
worldwide as a seal of design quality. The jury, made up of prominent
designers, examines both the design and the implementation of new
technologies in a total of eleven product groups. This year it awarded
339 red dots for top design quality. The "red dot: best of the
best" is awarded only three times within each product group.
"We feel confirmed in our standards of innovative premium
design," BMW chief designer Chris Bangle comments on the deluge of
awards. He is especially pleased by the fact that lifestyle products
designed in-house met with such unanimous approval from the jurors as
important components of the BMW and MINI brand identity. Especially the
MINI accessories, which echo the unmistakable design of the cult car,
combining imagination with a touch of humour, seem to have suited the
jury's tastes to a tee.

Press Contact: Cindy Chia
Tel: +65-6838-9629
E-mail: cindy.chia@bmwasia.com

Press Release,Awards
